Jordan in a minute is going to share with that but then also that once we know our ultimate goal I'm not been an educator yet whose ultimate goal is not to give back to school school and when we see those high rate of community transfer when we also see the ability for testing to be done sooner with consultation with county health that we would like to give back and I see it coming back or in a scenario of to and then ultimately a scenario one as we gradually work our way back so I want to clarify all that and then the next piece I wanted to share it I just wanted to give as we begin this because this is a very difficult difficult situation for all of us I just need to call out for Jordan mr. sit back there and also a team of people who have worked off the clock for many many hours and days to get to where we are today I hear a lot of staff we are living and breathing this because we want what's best for the students we them back but we also have an obligation to our students and staff to keep them safe and healthy and we also know that if if the scenario keeps playing out in the next three weeks we'd be right back in this spot anyway because we wouldn't have the staff to actually stop the educational process so with that I would like to turn over to mr.
Gibbon and I know that he is the supporter of those things and wants to get outside the box so we talked about mass we have to my concern personally is when we can right and and I think that to touch on what Mike's saying is that we already know that most of our classrooms are not we're not going to be able to do it look look at how we are in this stage you're not gonna be able to do it right so so what's the outside the box things and when you can create those things by all means do it and get the mask off the kids it yourself and all that but but what can then you know what did what do you do for them for the safety of the kids right so [Music] and this is on a different topic just kind of one clarification for my brain a little bit so if somebody goes home with kovat related symptoms which is what we want then after their symptom free for 10 days I think it says in there roughly then they can come back but if they get tested and they test positive for it then we need to they need to have two negative tests before they come back to school which I can see that it's almost distance enticing kids to people get tested I guess but I also understand that those same those same things are the flu those same things are common cold so you don't want kids sitting out and having to get tested just because they have the sniffles - so so yeah it's just a little confusing I think language wise but I understand it yeah are all of our all of our protocols follow the in-class Cova 19 recommendations developed from the Indiana State Department of Health Department of Education family social services administration and the governor's office and if they change your update tweak or make any adjustments to those things our language will be R that I don't know how to follow all that folks I've been on this board all about two minutes now I walked into this with the idea that I was gonna make a difference I had some ideas as far as I think most of you know what I do for a living so I had some ideas along that lines of some safety and things like that power in here and make some suggestions and here I sit on the board talking about code with 19 I don't know where to go with it I think we're all in the same boat we're all new at this we don't know what's gonna happen we don't know what's gonna happen tomorrow I think these folks are making the best choices they can for our students and we're all scared there's not anybody in this room that isn't scared about what's gonna happen I think we've made some some good choices there's room for maybe some improvements and there's some good points they've been made and I'm glad too that the folks have come in to make their their points made in here so that we can have some other extra things to think about and I appreciate that I don't know where to go from here guys I really don't we're gonna have to make some tough decisions and willing we can make the right decisions to keep our children and our families safe and just to go down the right path so I think you you all for allowing me to sit here and be a part of this and we'll see what we can do really the only question I would have us I've been presented with what do we do if there is a senior in high school that possibly has all the credits they need besides - there's there any allotment for them just to come in to take their two classes that they need to graduate and not bulk down this school from there on is there any allotment that can be allowed for that and I've been asked to present that and I I don't have an answer for that I refer to the expert in the middle there to answer that stuff I'm not an expert but I'll do my best to answer that as I familiarize myself with Greencastle but I believe students of green cast so much like they did at Bloomfield there is always the option I believe I would have to check our our board policy that's something we can look into if need be to allow a student to graduate early from high school I know that we had some students graduate after their junior year even their junior year at Bloomfield but typically you know seven semesters that's not anything unusual and you know even if that's an accommodation that can be made if that student isn't comfortable coming back into the on-campus school setting again providing a variety of options we could accommodate that student virtually for them to graduate early as well we would have to obviously check our our board policy and its do hand books thank you I know there's been some pretty good discussion up here and good questions I still you know why masks concern me I think we have gone from you know this plan where it originated to where we are now with a lot of discover and the born and mr.
Sawa had mentioned earlier he has made a petition to the state and certainly any updates that that might be available we'll be sharing them through through through our typical correspondents and emails but there may be also some information also available on our website so we ask you to please you know stay tuned and continue to monitor the website for any updates and so dr. cell at this time just gonna ask you if you have any closing thoughts for our families just want to also remind the families if you have not had an opportunity opportunity to do so yet please find some time to include your questions concerns comments recommendations in our FAQ sheet on the team and I certainly take some time to review them and incorporate updates where appropriate in where we can so thanks again dr. south yeah am i new to this overtime in my honor I just want to make sure great great job thank you yeah I just I know they're sure they're there there's so many so many questions I'm you know as we work through these details parents understand that the the application that we give to the state it's not a want it's a requirement and we got it we got to make a good faith effort to do it some of the things in there that we've been toying with and listening we've done hearings with students with parents twice with parents with other focus groups with you know our health folks down individuals the architect and engineer going around your district looking at the ventilation looking at you know danbury's got buildings that need just the normal times needs assistance with ventilation and no air conditioning so I'm very very concerned I'm concerned about the interest keeping those masks on all morning long all day long so some of the things I'm thinking about and I'm sharing with you now I'm trying but distill what I call a funnel it's all coming into the phone no it's coming down to that little bottom as I think as I think about on this scale what can I do I mean I'm thinking it might be a good idea for some early dismissals if for the mirth of first month to evaluate the situation if the state doesn't give us a hybrid that even when we in our phase one perhaps we do that your parents have been used to that one hour delay dismissal might be a two hour one which would enable us to maybe ease into this educate the youngsters have been in front of us do a grab and go because gathering and eating in the rooms is awful difficult we will not know how many parents are actually not sending their children so I just think that gives us time to breathe and ease in that's assuming the hybrid model isn't approved that's and like I said I know there's board members I see a number of money they're advocating and trying to help us get that and there but if in fact we got to go back well maybe we go back with less students of course of parents who want to drive them we have an early dismissal which would permit youngsters have some breaks and maybe school be a little more normal what we offer them and we move down that road and and then Erie evaluated towards the end of September going in October at least pitch to state telling them too difficult to occupy the schools and the lack of air conditioning and facilities that to come back safely so we're doing that the curriculum I said at the beginning I mentioned we're gonna invest in this learning we had an OK program it's got to be a stronger stronger program and then that will be a big investment particularly at the secondary level the youngsters with credit bearing courses then they have college application a lot of things down the line so we want to strengthen that parents ask me how are we going to keep the washrooms clean well we're going to use some of the money we set aside initially around close to 1.9 million we're looking at some other grants to bring folks in to be their president during the day to do cleaning in the washrooms and high-traffic areas we'll be doing those things we need assistance outside of parents for safety in terms of dropping off students there are a lot of things going on that if we did the hybrid it just cuts everything in half we still have to do what many of these things I'm speaking about but the mitigations would be at a different level so please understand your your questions to us help us define what it is that we need to do and as I said a while ago I my a my highest priority is safety and then we'll follow the experts and we'll work with our town officials and implementing those those initiatives so I want to thank you for being here this evening send your questions and some of you had some good ideas and solving some of them I love those as well and we'll put it together and talk with the board it's a workshop the board's input would help me to find the plan somewhat which is the one Friday on the 24th Kevin thank you for all you've done and I thank all the parents and board members who were here in town officials for listening in because our children's need all of us particularly at this time so thank you very much thanks dr.
Jordan to kind of share where we are and then proceed from there all right good evening can you guys let me understand me okay okay I call it yourselfer cotton dial us in Oh that's what any other couple people on the phone sorry we just Entertain You [Music] thank you you know joining a call with one other person hi mr.
Gibney hopefully he's taking that back to the committee and there's been some accommodations made we all know going into this room and not everyone is gonna be happy I don't think there's anyone in this room is gonna pick up this this plan and say this is just perfect I wouldn't do anything different but I think we need a jumping on point I think we need a place to start and make changes as they need be regardless of how those changes what direction those changes move in so I would entertain a motion to approve this reality plan as a place to start and and we're from can we tell we'll take questions again afterwards Harris so I would I would entertain a motion to approve this plan as a place to start to get kids back to school and see where we go from here but there will be changes made is there anyone willing to make a motion of proof laughs I haven't heard of motion there is a motion from down there okay Dale you made a motion okay we have a motion is there a second okay we have a motion in a second to approve this plan as it is all in favor yeah I will do a roll call mr.
Grimes are you on oh here we go sorry you know it helped here it helps if we dial into thank you watching you come on there really will on the screen that's appearing up buddy now all right you might want to mute yourself David please just hear that news yeah yeah I can hear you now I was watching your straight since I couldn't get through three can you pay because we're getting some background bang so I thought after the end of the school year a group of about 30 folks from the Senate or Unified School District at that have started looking at what is the next you're going to look like developing plans for the different scenarios of the possibilities of what could look like and that's what we've been meeting weekly the numerous times each week and came up with a play go this should be in your packet correct yes Danny so the playbook we came up with three different plans or three different scenarios whichever you want to call it to deal with what is happening out in the community in regards to the the coronavirus so the guidance that we use for these are all listed on page two and that was the public health orders and we're updating for the county office of our to help the United States Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Disease Control their guidance to schools we use the Sacramento County Office of Education their guidance for a real thing in the schools these education guides for opening schools EAB which is research national research firm that we have a contract with there are guidance when they're there have schools all across one day Department of Health and the trailer bill that may be at 77th the trailer bill as well as a related ed code so those aren't where I got its documents we were able to come up with three plans plan one would be to return to school using as many of the guidance recommendations as we could we determined pretty quick there's no way physically there's enough space in the schools to be the social distancing we can't fit of it in a classroom with the six feet of distance we just can't fit in a catch here is a third that wasn't a possibility but it's a plan we hope to get to you obviously does everybody wants to get back to school plan two is a hybrid plan that would allow us to do the social distancing other recommendations on mass and so important the hybrid is a forty six we're coming at the transitional plan that plan would be more half of the students would come up Tuesday Thursday half the students would come on Wednesday Friday it would allow us to spread out the students again from the social distancing and so forth however it still exposes your staff to all of the students so for example it's enter high school 1,300 kids we have 650 on Tuesday Thursday 650 on Wednesday Friday but you'd have all hundred plus step all four of those Mondays would be used for meeting times for interventions for planning or IEP s for final fours for SSDs that kind of stuff - and then finally plan 3 which is the full-time distance learning models and we recognize before I start talking up that the plan 3 it was rough distance when we started in March we basically that as well as everybody else across the country and about a weekend to figure out how to make this work and we realize that there were some significant difficulties with that so we've revamped that whole thing UT is a named a virtual learning to make it much more robust much more rigorous and with some checks and balances along the way so that we can monitor better to make sure that it's meeting the needs of all of our students so if you would his have this correct I'm gonna go through plan for you which is our recommendation if you could toggle the page 12 please so here's how this would work and I'm going to start with me at the preschool level this plan is developed for preschool through grade 12 adult so preschool will be at the virtual learning format they have had some success with that during the spring time that would be online some of the special ed services such as otm speech we may be able to bring some people in on a one-on-one basis to do those in person as well as as long as the the families are comfortable we want to give as much connectedness as possible going to the elementary schools our focus would be main focus is going to be reading writing back there is a requirement at kindergarten or 180 minutes that's in the trailer belt for first and second grade you're going to be 230 minutes or through sixth grade at minimum 240 minutes per day and so what that means is a combination of online time with their teacher plus the minute equivalent of assignments that they would be working on their own distant circles so how we would work this out if we start with kindergarten they would go online every day at least 60 minutes now that doesn't mean 60 minutes on our own very short attention but 60 minutes during that day so they made you a 15 minute walk then another 15 another 15 so on and so forth through the day in between that they would be given assignments to work on some of them would be online assignments some of them would be google boxer and some of them would be packets of we're going to distribute so they have this for food to do as well in addition the the teacher would be available for office hours so every day parents could either call in or email in or Google stub me in and get any questions answered as well as students in cartons get a little rough for them to go online on their own but with parent help on that if there's any questions or any tutoring that needs to happen that would happen during that office hours we will make every effort teachers make every effort to return fall within one business day so if you call it a Tuesday the expectation is you give me feedback just by at least one within the 24 hour business day take the software second my classes your grades one through three 230 minutes of online instruction in this case again they would be online for 60 minutes that may not be 60 minutes in a row again that may be broken down into smaller chunks 20 20 20 as an example during that time they received direct instruction they'd also have at least one social-emotional activity and that's do to connect students as well it's just checking on their social emotional well-being so there'd be at least one of those activities a day they're independent work then in grades 1 & 2 they'll be working on reading and writing foundational reading skills teaching of comprehension skills and writing skills again we're focusing on reading writing and math specifically and then grades 3 would be the practice of reading comprehension writing instruction and practice total 200 30 minutes a day per day and that includes both the online time and time equivalent of any assignments again we have office hours so that students and parents get in contact teachers to get answers any questions do some other tutoring that has done as well as in that independent time they would have social science activities social studies activities PE activities science activities so that we're not getting behind on those as well but we know that reading history we know that reading is key and that all the grades up especially after third grade so we want to really focus on that during our direct construction again 60 minutes to 6 min excuse me 24-hour turnover of emails questions phone calls four through six it wrapped its up at 10 minutes a day to 240 minutes of instruction the same format there's going to be an online time of 60 minutes again that can't be broken up doesn't that be 60 continuous minutes they'll have their independent study work still focusing on reading and writing during the direct instruction time then it's broken down 60 minutes of math as well per day that they'll be working on and then 60 minutes of a combined science social studies and PE activities so that they're not missing anything also once again a social-emotional activity at least once a day one time during that live instruction day we're trying to emphasize an end up here as well we have approved instructional methods and platforms we've looked at the different not only platforms so for example platform P Google Google classroom which everybody uses but another platform we have we have a just about to purchase for our speech people it's called presents learning that's a whole platform just built for distance learning we just went through a webinar we're going to purchase sauna which is a reading program that is built for distance learning where some of our vendors and so forth some of our other curriculums weren't necessarily built for distance learning we're bringing in approved curriculum that's builders and civically for that purpose so the student responsibility in grades 3 through 6 it'd be on 240 minutes a day both live instruction and impendent work five days a week Mondays we would have reserved for IEP s those kind of things in our special ed students with IEP s we're making sure our case managers are checking in at least weekly and that's a live contact weekly making sure that their needs are being met we're also looking at the arrangement activities our contracts where if a kid's not participating during the week we're going to be making contacts whatever it takes to get the family to re-engage the student to re-engage break down whatever the barriers are whether it's Internet Chromebooks whatever making sure they have whatever their needs are so they can engage with the curriculum and with their fellow students any questions on the Elementary if be considered true they would be considered trying after yes it would be considered true and it'd be a combination of are they attending online as well as turning in their assignments so that equivalent to another floor so the idea is once a week they'll be turning in this teacher will be turning in like I call it a tendency to be kind of to do it that way who was it be who's showing up for the Fox meetings online who's turning in her assignments so on and so forth and then we're going to be making contacts but amongst not only certificated staff but classified staff to make sure we're engaging people quickly so couple weeks doesn't go by without them being involved in the process we do have aides yes we do have a aides that speak different languages we are with a or put the service now an online services interpret that way instructional at all documents meetings so on and so forth and they do all have to get a distance-learning format so we've contracted with them yes and for newcomer students we have the instructors that would be working closely with them and the interpreters if the student or family lesson interpretation services so the goal is with these online meeting is not just to teach the aides will be involved too and sometimes it may be breaking out into the small group sessions breaking it into a you know tutoring type session translation whatever is necessary [Music] yes so Fred so upon upon return so a lot of these are here subscriptions they accept are on my face of upon return we would be able to use those in the current year and then once we're back we would determinate that's a source we want to keep because it was really beneficial or we would let it expire because from the distance learning or virtual learning aspect so for example for our speech formatter look at a present for me it has a lot of these activities that you could normally do a person but they diverted them to an online format as well so you can use them in either scenario and then you use their platform to do the online stuff so it's showing that I'm not going to screen instead of a teacher having about something so so two points on that and I'm sure mr. Han will say something much better if possible there is specific dollars that are coming to us and lisas received some of them already that will be our directive only for this purpose so as you say we go into a year subscription and it's $10,000 it's it's coming out of a pot of funds it's coming specific for kovat related expenditures we've also used it to buy more Chromebooks because we have enough for our kids but we know what's going to happen is you start using them every single day we're going to get breakdown to tell us we need to have some replacements we have those coming as well and that glimmer question my concern is regarding preschool and kindergarten at that level [Music] the parents will be at work then they will be added in for possibly or maybe with the sibling and when their sibling the sibling is going to do better online class so it's not an option and we have to do it that's just consider going to lose those kids so one of the things we've talked about the way we did work now it is we don't have to go during the normal school hours so maybe preschool we do later in the day or earlier the day and then a high school and we've talked about moving high school back maybe towards the afternoon oversleep so because you're correct kindergarten preschool they're going to need somebody there whether it's an older sibling or a parent we're going to need that assistance with the kids burgers switching the first grade were sitting there day anybody's ever been around at first grade classroom notices sometimes it's hard to keep those kids away keep it in there in class yes it is if they're at home you've lost it I'm afraid how are we gonna be able part of those kids to do that and that's why we're looking for even though it's a 60 minutes total online we're looking at the smaller chunks of time online give a little bit of a break come back again because we know that they're not going to maintain their attention that they need constantly she's high school kids in class it is it's certainly not ideal I agree I gives my own at home that they were going through the same process I had yet I don't know what's best or how to handle it they it's got pimples like they're not trying hard for something our goal is to work or work we're in this together we're not a truancy officer will read this together so these re-engagement conversations how can we help what can we do that home we're even throwing around a plan this is an idea but they're underfunded maybe there's some kids if you can bring out of tier two tier three kids are struggling on campus and very very small groups where we can help them out back edge and to type sections that begin that's it that's it talk say that's part of so having gone through this last semester and I know a lot of its logistics what do you do with the kid who maybe has a question it's got a consignment do it's been five hours notice I put five hours my teacher hasn't answered me okay well your teacher might have 120 or 180 students there might be 119 other females teachers answering that doesn't help that kid with that assignment right then when it's due so do we and have we talked at all and working stuff like that some sort of accommodations because no one classroom particular than I can thinking you know there's get out a goal of getting a four point one 4.0 because in one class he couldn't figure out what the teacher was trying to say it so I'm like ah be sad did you meet her the teacher did you request a meeting your question not all high schoolers know that the high schooler was just kinda like to get through well the email got answered but it didn't answer for two days we have the met on Monday morning and then suddenly Wednesday night at 11 p.m.
Pierce hi you guys and I think if this a fluid situation that's you know I was thinking you'd have to have consider this beginning point it then changed will I think inevitably be made one way or the other right correct yeah I mean I think it's gonna been done circumstances no ok well this leads me I think I'm gonna go yes motion passes oh okay I guess now we will as we said we will open this back up to some comments and questions or let's please to try to stick with comments you hi my name is Alicia and I know you probably can't answer these questions tonight but I do have three questions for you to consider first you stay that the big students can purchase water at the meal times extra purchases are not normally covered by the free lunch program so how will that be affected for those students who want to purchase water but are on a free lunch program also for those students and those parents who really want their kids to learn virtually but do not have access to high-speed Internet do you have an alternative plan for them and finally when the COBIT virus finally dies down and things start to get back to normal well the first will learning continue as an option thank you my name is Wayne Lewis would take his crazy thing off just to rehash from history what's happened in the past few months these have been changes and or cancellations seminars dr.
14 assignments get dropped and I can't have ever met I don't ever remember a time when I was in school when a single teacher every single class dropped 14 assignments and I was due on Friday so there so you know I don't know how much of that is technology and the programs were using but aside from it not being as good a quality education there were a lot of things that we hope the in second semester of the workout Kings but I know I'm not the only one who dealt with that with my high schoolers cuz I've heard from it from other people and that it just didn't work so what I know we set these parameters but do we have a different software what's what's going to make this semester distance-learning different than last semesters distance there's a couple of things one we've learned from our mistakes from last semester first we also know going in there's a little bit different motivation from the front line astute sight they do they can go back to their third floor a very long time and that latex problem some kids just kind of tip that that's not going to be the case at this time from an administrative standpoint we have a better idea of how to monitor what's going on from teacher to teacher to ensure that that what needs to happen is happening I think we have a better understanding that working for Eustace a lot of teachers are used to hard deadlines when things are due we're gonna have to be a little bit more flexible because things are going to come up people's inner that's going to go on things are gonna we're gonna have to have more flexibility and that's not to say everybody turned everything in the very landscape it's asking I'm not saying that but more along the lines of what we do with my EPS and 504 we have a little more flexibility and getting things in when something happens or if a kid isn't getting it does not understand the content or caste we're going to have to be more flexibilities absolutely we our teachers now understand the the platform's better than they did many of our teachers have never used a flexible it was all branded let alone the Google needs to consume that kind of stuff we've got a little bit more experience and then act and we'll bring in some better choices they're going to allow them to be more fluid in their delivery of instruction they just didn't have that are less semesters so that's going to be a difference as well so one thing that the human that I think is a big deal is everybody gonna be posting everything on the same platform I know we had a scenario last year or a kid thought he had done all of his assignments and then found that some teachers were posting a Google classroom and some are posting the Aires the kid wasn't necessarily taking advantage of I can rely on the third quarter credit I got everything done and to know if you've got X number of missing assignments this was supposed to not areas instead and in one of the state that is better on one of the things I think that's gonna be harder because we ships last semester they could pick and choose strategically which classes that they would do like okay underline my third quarter grades so that this one that I need to raise all email my teacher well now they can't rely on that and all the kids are nailing all eight of their teachers obviously that just seems logistically like a nightmare maybe it's not maybe people are used to answering 100 emails and now or whatever else but I just I almost think the teachers would have been getting fewer emails last semester because some kids like Aria days most class I'm checking out that not you training on these I don't know logistically how we deal with all teachers getting so I don't know I just I'm picturing not as a heavy Airlift great but I don't know how we do it when we have problems with the lighter load last semester and we kind of built in the schedule is more organized this year for teachers we've got hours built in every single day to be not only online for an hour and it's not any recommendation it's a requirement as well as email checking time and planning time and so forth so it's broken down what their minute requirement is online and then what the expectations are during that often time off online time if that's a tournament they're not online for what the rest of their day is looking and in terms of getting back to parents getting back to students having those office hours no matter every single thing that is building and I think it actually festival someone here for kids you and I had a lot of conversations about experiences and was fun because compliance weird work work but it was fun because I was able to hear firsthand and a lot of those things were nice as we don't typically hear those things so those Tippett's help us improve but but I want to and Mike is if we're doing a fantastic job we're still gonna pick ups I mean I might make you know site I don't want anyone to think where we're sitting you're thinking we've got the perfect plan we know they're going to be things and we have to adapt we have to work through the process when we hear feedback the other idea that we've had that came about yesterday was we have some staff that typically would be dealing with face to face with people let's utilize them to reach out to the Pope family or the hunt family proactively to say hey how's it going oh it's great but I'll go out of the question oh okay great we'll get a message to mr.
case and I had a seminar online for some that I've been in practice 47 years everything's been face to face this fear was online it worked I wasn't liking it but it worked sporting events from professional sports down to youth sports ball band changed you good better and different but they all been changed festivals we don't have any vessels in Greencastle fair on square or the music on the square and all the other things are going to be canceled the Fair has been canceled the Rose Bowl this is an oxymoron the Rose Bowl today was canceled Rose Bowl parade was canceled the Rose Bowl ballgame is gonna go on now you got 80,000 people sitting in a big bowl I think it was social distance I doubt it are they gonna wear masks by death for Californians think about it high school graduations have all been changed these are the things that we could look at from history but here's the question I have for you as a board 61 million dollars my correct is saying was given to Indiana from the from the federal government how much the green cows gonna get do you have any idea you have to apply you're not guaranteed I couldn't hear you you have to apply for it's a competitive grant it's not guaranteed okay not guaranteed well here's to one thing is guaranteed you're gonna have two health clinics per school one for bumps and bruises custom scratches the other one for covin if it never had occurred is that correct okay you have two nurses for five buildings that means the responsibility is going to go back to these secretary and of the ia or a teacher are they qualified to do this taking some of that money out of the budget that we were not guaranteed we're going to get hire some more three more nurses one for each building and that would be less you've been done anyhow but now we're in circumstances where we must think about that something to consider if you have two nurses or five buildings are they yeah they are are the secretaries overworked yes they are as the principal's overworked yes they are principals are in the building most of time because you're in meetings try and figure out what's going on and just don't cook any better it's not cooking any better with this thing is this thing it's still dynamically changing fluidly just like the coven mutates our ideas are gonna have to mutate with it we have to make changes I'm all for getting kids back into school I'm all for kids having social and economic evaluations given to them I'm all for teachers being able to teach but I'll mostly concerned with the safety and the health of everyone not just the teachers and the students and the staff but they're gonna take it home or they're gonna bring it in he goes both ways thank you for your attention you guys have got a terrible terrible thing to work with them I really respect for you it's amazing that you can sit there and not want to shoot me especially the guy who has a gun because some of the things I said but you're gonna find out after I've been to these school board meetings for the last thirty years I'm pretty verbal I'm pretty vocal I don't hold back I step on your toes that's your problem not mine he stepped on my toes that's my problem not yours it goes both ways thank you for attention [Applause] good evening my name is Suzanne Hassler I'm very active in arts and culture in particular in the community of active and a variety of different community organizations and church functions largely my role has been in the area of marketing and publications is related to the art art and culture particularly as an editor and as an editor I take exception to a word of praise in particular in this document I'd like to see clarified on the first page we have a paragraph dedicated to social distancing and I think that that's unclear what that means social distancing is never actually defined in terms of what is a healthy social or safe social distance to be maintained and I'd like to suggest that that praise be changed to physical distancing and that while we want to encourage social interaction emotional support amongst our students and their teachers we want to maintain a healthy safe physical distancing and that that physical distancing be defined as whatever you agree upon six to ten feet and I think that clarified pressure off of the teachers in terms of having to enforce it in a classroom thanks so much hi there my name's Aaron dance I'm a teacher over at easy for a 5th grade I have a few just clarification questions these might actually be answered by my building administrator here soon enough so just didn't know if these are things that have been thought about I run quite a few extracurriculars in my building these are after school clubs Science Bowl just similar programs I know there's lots of other educators to run programs like these too are these programs were previously where I let any number of students in that I need to start capping are these programs that since I have DePaul volunteers that come in both semesters is this something that I'm still going to be able to have these DePaul volunteers come in while I'm consistent by DePaul volunteers change every semester depending I've been able to check with some people on the DePaul end of things and it's actually more reliant on us than it is their decision at this point so that'd be something that we would need to clarify to have those volunteers come in on a regular basis with hands on extracurriculars I run stem Club is that something that I'm gonna have to change how we operate that or is that something that I just need to wait until this blows over a couple more concerns along the lines of masks students I have students that forget their backpacks at home with everything in them if a student comes to the bus stop without a mask on is that something where the bus driver has some kind of alternative for the student to wear so they can come to school based on the number of those that we have is that something we can work around I want to make sure our students can come to us so we can take care of you know along those lines it just it comes down to something that you know we have to find a workaround with a lot of this and you know I'd much rather had those kids with us cared for at the same time I want to make sure that everyone who's trying to do that is cared for - we we give a lot and sometimes we give more than we have I just want to make sure that it's not something that we're giving up so much that we're not trying to care for ourselves to justify thank hi my name is Martha Abdal I lived here forever 67 and my kids won 2-6 Keys record could you do a favor when you tip the bike thank you can you hear me you don't have to dip it down quite so much just dip it up a little bit I just want make sure everyone here there you go yeah these questions came to me during your conversation and discussion and it's a formidable document your opening plan and I sort of zeroed in a couple of weak links the whole project is keeping the bug out of the schools and it seems from the very beginning if you look at the screening process I'm not sure what that means maybe just taking temperature or whatever but it's a fact that infected people are most contagious before they show symptoms of having the corona virus so you will be having perhaps people that don't realize they have virus in school and it seems the simplest way of protecting against that eventuality is face masks they are the most not the most perfect but yes the most perfect protection for the general public out there and it seems that if the school can have a dress code that states certain things like coats and outdoor jackets are not to be worn to class as the building is climate-controlled like this is dress code you cannot do these things gang-related apparel including insignias hair nets but antennas etc etc is considered inappropriate for school attired and is prohibited if shorts or skirts are worn to school the lens should be appropriate the length must be at least to the students extended fingertips sagging pants are not acceptable pants should be worn at the waistline regardless of the length of the students sure and so on it seems a simple move to make face masks required as part of the dress code and this would protect lines these others I don't know there's social taboos or whatever but face masks could save lives so I would I was hoping I should have said this before your vote but as it turns out I just wish this were considered as providing for the safety of the teachers the staff and students everybody involved I think face mics are essential and like seatbelts you get used to them it's like secondhand smoke you can't smoke cigarettes in public there are all kinds of laws that protect public health that people go along with so it's not a matter of opinion and choice necessarily we're trying to prevent illness prevent death and if masks are the way to do it I can't understand why there's such an issue that's that's my comment thank you heidy manzil middle-school swim coach and from my job at DePauw and committees I'm on there we've of course been discussing social distancing a lot and measurements we've had to do with the classrooms there we went from 77 classrooms that's at 16 or more students down to 7 and that is based on distance from the desks to the next desk that assuming the desk takes up 2 feet of space and to the next desk another 6 feet so figuring 8 feet from where the student sits to the next student and so you're talking figuring a class of 24 students is now down to sometimes 4 to 6 students have we measured classroom space yet to see how many students actually fit in a classroom socially distanced because to discuss saying that once my class is settled in all facing forward that they are now socially distance and can remove their masks unless we've actually measured the classroom to be able to legitimately say that they can do that I don't think is being honest with ourselves so I just want to lay that at your feet and say that we need to present that to everyone out here who is thinking that our students can then sit in the classroom and truthfully take their masks off at times during the day so along the line of what like Russell and Brian were saying that we need to require masks at all times except when socially distance I don't think we can honestly say that I think we need to just stay masks are required thank you you first of all thank you for everything you're doing this evening I'm Margo hurtin Stein and I've been teaching here first grade for 18 years and just listening to everything I had some considerations for the board to think about first of all considering the raising of sub pay again I realize money doesn't grow on trees but just a consideration because I know it's been lower than some other districts and that would be something that may help entice some people to consider becoming in a subbing because at the primary level especially it is very difficult to get subs and and the need is there and we spend hours preparing I'm very concerned about the day that I'll have to be gone for a long period of time if that happens because of the time that is put into preparing for a sub also with that again another money grown on trees but considering the possibility of more ayase for the primary level or at least shift Deana biases in the whole district that may be high school and middle school I come down to the elementary level for there's for those first two three weeks just to be another body in the classroom to help transition kids into the idea of social distancing wearing masks and those kinds of things so again it's looking from the lens of that primary level we are such a unique age group when it comes to helping students feel comfortable in their educational environment thank you I just wanted to check based on the plan that you presented in a little more detail at the slides are you talking about committing to the virtual or not do we have clarity on what happens when we have a whole classroom quarantined are they then going to a virtual platform are they just out of there not doing any learning if that part is really confusing they would be going to quarantine learning okay and then what is that so quarantine learning would be much like you know in years past if a student's absent or ill from the classroom and out with the flu for a week or two the teacher would work with that student and that students families for them to make up the work missed but they would be provided that on a daily basis are you talking about like they're you know they're getting two weeks of work two weeks later no there would be a date that would be a daily that would be a daily thing so one of the things that are that we have been intentionally working on with with teachers especially because just across all grade spans we utilize canvas as our learning management platform we started much earlier and I don't have the hit the history behind it but we started much earlier with our upper levels in our middle school in our high school and we have only begun recently pushing that down into the intermediate intermediate and our primary buildings so we have been much more intentional with PD over the summer CJ has had I think at least 60 teachers participate in some form of professional development with him specifically for canvas so pushing out assignments through canvas and making them available yeah we don't want to students to get to a point where all of a sudden they have two weeks worth of work to catch up that's not that's not good on anyone we want to keep them on pace changes our mind as they watch the Cova trade in the county raise or you know their child has allergies and they're continuously you know being sent home because they sneeze because it's allergy season do they then switch to a virtual platform do they continue with the quarantine learning or whatever you know category yeah again and we're gonna follow our protocols for for exclusion from school and it our protocols for exclusion it from school you know address those address those things I think that's pretty likely to happen yeah but just you know try to get about it because you're seeing like there's a commitment to depending on the age level either nine weeks or full semester but what if you say well we want to start this way but then a month in realize it's not going well are there issues where the child is being quarantined you know yeah so if I'm understanding correctly so if there's if there's a change or an extenuating circumstance could we allow a different accommodation I don't know that's something I would have to take back to the committee I know initially art the thought behind making families identify our selected choices so that we can put plan in place and make sure that we have our we're able to staff it appropriately so but that's something we can address through the thank you okay and then when when you're asking families to commit before the school year starts do we don't how much time they'll have and well they have the clarity about okay your child would be in this classroom there's this much space between the desks like what level of granularity will there be for families to make a solid decision yeah so again the reopening plan is a framework and it was never meant to address every possible possible question so we wanted to be able to have an a reopening plan or more or less that framework approved first and then we can really dive into the nitty-gritty and a lot of those specific details to share out with families about what it looks like at at TZ what it looks like at Green Castle middle school what it looks like at Green Castle high school so yeah we we want to be able to provide clarity for that and a large part of that is going to be addressed through administrator meetings with with teachers in their buildings and and hammering out those details for us to push out again we had to have a reopening framework approved first okay students go back on the fifth or working on meetings beginning next week okay all right yeah I just I wanna I want you guys to be able to plan for success and I feel like there's so many unknowns it's just a lot so all right hi um I just had a couple questions that kind of came up as we're talking about social distancing within the classroom and how if it's not feasible to have everybody sitting six feet apart but yet we are you know or masks against masks take out take masks out of the out of the equation there um however if we are sitting at our desks at school six feet apart but there's not enough room for everybody to be six feet apart but yet we're also potentially expected to be eating class eating in our classroom you cannot eat in your classroom without with the mask on so you're still getting into that gray area of those germs are still there those germs are still being spread if we don't have that distance I personally have not measured on my classroom so I don't know how many desks I can fit in there um but that was just something that came to my mind as you guys were talking about looking at the spacing of the room with or without a mask at some point in the classroom they have to be without a mask to have lunch and if we aren't spaced out accordingly it kind of seems a moot point for me anyway um another thing that I was um kind of watching is shared materials I've actually been watching you guys share the microphones um I have a lot of shared materials in the classroom that we won't be able to use for me to teach a first grader to be independent an independent learner I use books they look at pictures they might not know the words yet but they look at pictures I don't have those materials anymore to necessarily use just like you all didn't have enough materials for everyone have an individual mic again I just want from like you know from a primary lens that to just be just in the back your mind so thank you okay so I had two things that kind of stuck out my mind when we were all talking Quarantine learning you mentioned that the classroom teacher would be coming up with those materials for that student so in addition to teaching all day long I would have to come up with materials for these students for two weeks is that what you're saying no it would be treated just like a student who's absent from school in years past we're not expecting you to work above and beyond your contracted contract in addition to teaching all day so I just want to know how feasible that's going to be when I have six kids who are out and I have to come up with different plans for each of them I can't do that yeah we're not asking you for different we're asking you to provide them an opportunity to make up the worst work mist that the other students are currently doing and I would I would ask you to approach your building administrator and have a conversation with them on that absolutely okay and then my second question I coach eighth-grade volleyball volleyball is one of those sports where you're in very close proximity and you're not gonna be able to wear a mask how is that gonna play out because I know they're doing football right now and they're outside they're able to separate further I can't with volleyball and this is a team sport where everybody's gonna be touching the ball everybody's gonna be breathing on everyone I just I don't see how we're gonna be able to socially distance and that worries me I'm also pregnant so I'm in that high-risk group and hormones are really high and I'm kind of nervous and scared about going back to be perfectly frank yeah I would ask you to have a conversation with mr.
Jordan or mr. Alera whatever to do it so we know we're gonna have some struggles but I think the plan we have the accountability of it and just the structure will lend itself to a better experience but I don't want to disillusion that we it's going to be perfect we're gonna have to adapt and I know you're not saying that but I just I think the feedback is what will make us better with my my whole point and I guess where guess where I'm going with those I know it's not gonna be perfect what I would I think of is the kid takes the fall for them because we don't have a procedure nice right so and and I don't envy being in the teachers position because like with my kid I'm going to tell my kid you failed that suck it up it's a learning experience but we all know some parents are gonna say yeah yeah my kid never got the assignment whereas with if it's my kid I'm not gonna let him go to the Thai teacher unless he honestly didn't get a response and that honestly did push him past the deadline right so I wouldn't want to be the teacher trying to sort out who's telling me the truth not answer so I don't think it hit me perfect at all I just want to know that there's a procedure in place for kid who's honestly working now art that that child does not pay the penalty is that child just whether his internet connection was down or the teacher was sick that there that teachers internet connection with them if it's honestly that the kid not made a price for their technology look great I think you would find I will speak for all teachers but also people at the administrator crimper we talk with that is a very consistent messages it's kind of like giving graces the kid the benefit that out is going to go to get the family to help them succeed versus no speaking of that they know any computers did we lose last year we left some out because we were thinking that they would have bring them back so correct that right it was not as high as small loss and way less it was [Music] hundreds if we found out we checked out so it turned out really early as well other ones that we got back some other classes let their get their computers all up in here but when we got back in the Sanderson welcome we were what I've been wanting to do anyway is is issue a Carlton to a student anyway just like we would a textbook regardless of where it is this learning or not to me that is their textbook lattes and if you don't have one that you could use we want a shoe so this is a benefit that we've received is we're starting to see what is our shrinkage what is our loss with as it relates to those and anyway so that that's a byproduct this is now occurring to learn people or takes a good care of their stuff they're trees like a a nice book you know I can once in a while they come back lar damage everyone someone a little brother or sister god I've been true with brands on them but it happens and there's no way around the like happens I've broken a film slip down my hands it didn't mean to it [Music] questions okay so I you just wonder about their his middle school and I said okay yeah nobody at the Middle School on page 14 so again it be a minimum 240 minutes of instruction time they're going to be an a6 period day just for this year we will go back to the expiry date next week the sixth pre-debut split between a and B so they would have a half their classes on 8a 323 four through six on beating again this time instead of last time where it was more once a week and they would have it I think it's every single day every single class 30 minutes a day online live instruction with the teacher included in that 30 minutes a day online live instruction is some peer interaction time you know for all kids but especially so they won't have you schedule what they're doing that at least 30 minutes a day per class then they're also going to be doing 50 minutes of warm per class for those three classes that they have that day independently so that would add up to the time at the car forty minutes again we're working not only on core classes but also elective classes so that you nessam elective options we also have our interventions co-worked in we're going to continue with corrective reading for those that needed and you figure out a way to do that online so that will continue as well still happy office our time work we're get students that could be in small groups and so on and so forth again we have the district of platform so for example kind of go back to your question earlier the expectation L is that all teachers will be using Google classroom to post their assignments likewise all teachers will be using Aires to post their grades we try and respond to words between Aires and Google to get those two talk together then just don't play nicely together the Google gradebook eugene's try it and if you g can't do it i believe it'll to do so we can't rely on the Google gradebook anymore to be the drape of Beverly C's it's gotta be read it I'm talking about trying to be a Google classroom is not the area they're great look through the ground classroom and we couldn't get it to work we've gone through the companies they just won't play nicely together and sure would make their buddies like London the TV would be a traditional grading system the a3x again grades count there's no going back to your 3rd quarter grades we start from day one grades Kevin with the understanding there's may not be some flexibility on des they're just going to have to [Music] any questions on middle school be able to have a P yes [Music] it depends on whatever the guidance would be as of right now CIF we should hear on Monday put the guide tube AME I think it's my name in 20 or click there help me name is the week of the 20th the demon so it depends on that it depends on the would play against them stuff like that [Music] in the middle and in Heather middle school moving on to set up high school I'm gonna split up Center high school no claw high school they're gonna run a little bit differently Center High School is going to maintain their av8 period block we Navy a days and B days we're gonna ratchet up the minutes at the high school level so the minimum requirements 240 we're actually going to have six hours of work a day for high school kids so they'll be on line 45 minutes for each class period each day I have 45 minutes again is five minutes of English 45 minutes of math or whatever their classes are then they're going to be expected to do additional 45 minutes of an independent study work where they're working on assignments from their class so that's a good point five days a week there's still a 60 minute office hours time that they can come in and check in with their teachers do small group interactions so on and so forth we are looking at the possibility of making a Monday taking it off the av schedule and make it an intervention day so what that mean is we can do small groups of kids who are struggling we do that online with kids pull out those kids tier two tier three who are really struggling and whenever the subject area signs nothing and have more direct instruction just with those kids that are spreading that's a discussion right now and it's see that Miceli and a plan yet but that is something that we are seriously taking the level it would actually increase the time I'm only four teachers a little bit on that Monday but I think it would be very beneficial toward kids who were or struggling it is woman [Music] we're meeting again tomorrow and it would be great if we can and I guarantee we can handle that it's like sometimes the intervention takes you get identify the intervention is needed system that takes few weeks even with some specialized services we can identify what it is I think we'll also get a good idea for a couple weeks so hopefully we read back but as long as we're in this we'll start seeing the idea of what gives me more help and then again the grading would be a traditional ABCD grading system and then there may be some options for a credit bill credit depending on individual basis you know what's wrong okay because we recognize families are struggling there and this time too especially if people start getting sick our family runs protocol we sit there are those have some flexibility building again it's got to be a world working together it's not unless first they're all working together but there being an option or could we think about setting up an option third particularly junior high high school kids the parent can't get to work at home can't get them to do anything or cooperate at home to set up small groups at school but there's somebody else in charge so the scenario mr.
Greenlee and talk through them to talk through that with him we also have the board approved reopening plan for athletics and again you know as circumstances change there may have to be adjustments with that as well but right now we have we're following that athletics reopening plan and that's also a you know a fluid situation so just maintain good dialogue with with us and know we're here we're here with you we recognize that and we want us we want to support you thank you tough job I really feel for you guys you got a lot of tough decisions to make I do have one question that I might have the best when you're asking us to commit early to whether we're going to do the virtual learning or in-class learning is that commitment is there a grace window like if I decide that you don't want to send my kid to school in the facility but then I realize that hey this is not kind of this is not why I'm a gendarme where I'm not willing to to take that risk can I back out and maybe do a virtual learning after or or recommit in another direction is our grace period in which I can see because like you said there are a lot of details left to be ironed out maybe what you think now is not what's going to be applied you know during that during the start yeah as I mentioned earlier that's something that the committee discussed okay thank you hi I'm Angela huff I have a freshman and a junior this year at the high school and I want to say well I very much appreciate the efforts of the teachers at all grade levels in the spring with eLearning they were heroic they were last-minute they turned on a dime we all appreciate that but the method of placing assignments in canvas and expecting families to be able to help their own children with the learning that was often required for those assignments there were just a lot of families that were not equipped for that and that could be time constraints or that could be educational background a variety of reasons so when I looked at the Quarantine learning plan and saw that from my perspective and from what I'm hearing from you that's a very similar activity or a very similar plan it greatly concerns me I feel like it's reasonable and possible and I hope I'm wrong but my kid who has allergies could be quarantined multiple times within a single semester and I know that other families who have chronic issues with their children are probably in that same space so mister giving you talked about one of the reasons for not delaying the start of the school was that we might see the gap widened or worsen that we started with in the spring I'm concerned that multiple possible quarantine periods with children receiving assignments through canvas could create the same so I would offer that I think there needs to be additional consideration given to that quarantine learning plan I know that other schools are planning to stream like either live stream or record classrooms during actual lesson time and there's a great deal of technology that supports that so I would suggest that that would go into a committee for greater consideration to see what other opportunities might be in play Thanks i Peter Foss here thanks again for the opportunity to hear us just have two questions one of them has to do with the situation with regards to someone in a particular classroom or cohort testing positive for Kovan what would you have in place for contact tracing will you will you have enough information to know which students staff faculty to go to to try to figure out who else might need to go into quarantine because of their close contact with those students in other words is it for the younger kids who are in individual classrooms with their teachers most of the time that my easier but when you get to middle school in high school and students move from classroom to classroom how do you how do you know who a particular person if they happen to get it has been in contact with so that's the one question second one as parents are deciding which pathway to take in-person or virtual will they know whether their teachers are choosing or creasing the wear masks or not or not able to wear s or not so that information is transparent to your parents that's it Thanks two things first thank you to everyone who came here tonight and a lot of people had to leave early reminded that that a lot of us are coming from very different directions and they all have different concerns for different reasons and I'm very thankful that everyone's can everyone's given voice to their concerns reminder that we all need to try to see from their person's perspective and be forgiving to each other and to this to all the teachers in the school board because this has never happened before and I and thank you to the school board um I'm personally glad the motion passed but I'm also thankful that it's at some interesting I'm glad it did not pass unanimously because I know there's gonna be further discussion about this and I could see that it was not just okay let's pass it get on to a great thought great care of this so thank you very much and thank you to our leaders and may we all be good followers as well thank you partner I have a student at the high school and the word required unmask I have an issue with but I I'm fine with the concessions you have made time because I think it's a personal choice we all need to be realistic we are not going to keep this out of school I don't care if every single person wears a mask you are not keeping out of school people are gonna get sick people are going to get it let's be realistic wearing masks in school all day long is not going to keep people from get sick you know make this very brief kind of piggyback and well Kristen said earlier requiring students to have a masks I think it's phenomenal requiring them to wear a mask in my classroom is my choice as long as I don't supersede what the school corporation says is that not part of my classroom management so it's just like cell phones do I allow cell phones in my classroom or do I not do I mandate mask in my classroom or do I not so everyone has an opinion agree with Logan you know thank you for everyone for doing this this has not been an easy task will not be an easy task two weeks from now when things change let's invent they will but again unless mr.
garden kind of mentioned elementary was that could become a tier 2 or tier 3 intervention a higher level tier is if we start working with a family and I just can't give little Scotty to be on line just can't do it and then we can intervene with that and that could be a possibility and that's another intervention that we're working with now once we get kind of the main platform then we're starting to move into what other strategy we can't offer that obviously to everyone but if we're struggling we you can help the parents especially we have an obligation by Ed code now to reach out to find some solutions to those strategies some parents just clash you know a teaching thing with their kid it just doesn't work right we started looking into a model out of Contra Costa County to present very small groups like five kids with a teacher where they're working in the world we're definitely investigating I'm wishing to affirmative but we can't almost like their independent study work you know could get your stuff will really give you some instruction and then you go home and do it on your own and this is not this is not developed by me by any means but one of the thoughts we had to is even if it's just this space that you have a teacher with four kids they're all spread way out but someone just in there as they do their discipline you don't have to be their teacher it would just be an option to get some kids but again you can't offer that to everyone but that is something we're absolutely exploring as we run into parents who are like I'm struggling with this how can I do this and it may not have you teach it but if there's questions or if there's something that comes up right anyone yeah I received thinking about maybe some classes for your parents with this new program they don't know what they look at it and say this is nice you know I've been good idea yeah their basic parent education on a lot of this yeah maybe you know you want to come learn the new bath come on and we're going to go through the program absolutely yeah that was going to say the one thing that we have talked about there Ryan too is like it's almost like Google classroom how do you get parents at four because to be quite honest until my son got into I knew what it was but now it's like Oh kind of pretty pretty darn good now but I think that's thank you and I know that's on the list but I think it's great information and then we're ready to move it voila the clone is a continuation splits under different ed code different rules so we go back to 180 minutes minimum again they're going to be online for their classes 30 minutes a day minimal online and then know how they're an additional independent work to do there's also going to be a 45-minute online one-on-one tutoring where those kids can sign up for a one-on-one tutoring or smaller than that exactly do that sign up for small group tutoring if they need additional help or or additional and guidance on anything that's going on again if they have a much smaller class size anyway so it's going to be a little bit easier to get the questions and things answered just by its very nature they are gonna have a little bit different grading schedule there's going to be a B C and then there's going to be a credit no credit address and so that will be in conjunction with the family in there and the teacher what's going to work best and questions on it okay oh if we implant three our independent study option would be this because that is there at home I received a couple of phone calls over the last week about the parents who are interested there they're calling it home school look when they start talking to what they really want this is what their kids not to be around anyway so this would satisfy that we do have edgenuity which is an online computer based program which to be honest is very difficult for students to be a lot of students to be successful you are completely on their own except for morally for the teacher but we do have some students who are for example get a suit like using cancer treatments in the hospital that was the best option friend if you have a handful of kids that will still be an option for it and that would be an option as we transition into plan to well it's still be an option for the families that chose to stay and 100 % distance model as we so we get backs and we know there's going to be there's a spectrum of people within this so we want to make sure that we make them comfortable with the learning experience done so in terms of our special ed population art department suits with an IEP we will be doing both table therapy again we're looking at different platforms such as depression starting first beach folks what Jack say I'm so happy in fact I'm 402 folks as well although they use a pretty good platform that a separate for your classroom we are looking at getting some families option if they want to come in because it's just one-on-one and we can do social distancing in that way to be able to do PT ot II speech type services but those will continue as they only would in in the school year as well as the one-to-one meetings with their their case manager every week to make sure that their needs are being met and we're working through any barriers there are in the process and then safer earning this way our services will continue as well but in a pull out situation for offering like a Google classroom full of suffering as well as during the class instruction that's that that's the gist of there any other question is the war I have a question question aside I don't imagine this is on purpose but it's mean there's a real poison filling here and that is we saying we're gonna follow the Sacramento County Health Officer etc etc and in her literature she's staked out quite an extremist position so for instance like if you go to the National Federation of high schools and everything in them they say if we come up with your cure if we get hurt immunity if we get a vaccine they lay out like four or five paths to which we could come back to school the Sacramento County Department of Public Health is staked out in the position only when there's vaccine period now I know that Moderne said they're going into trial 3 yesterday on their stop shot up but most people's positions have been we're not going to have vaccine right here so I know when Scott and I talk we talk about common sense and I'm sure if we all talked about common sense yeah of course things get better we come back but in our plan both the plan 1 and 2 we're saying where we're going to follow this person in sacramento county department health and she's already saying no football no basketball which is a winter sport no baseball or softball which is a spring sport so if we're passing a plan that says we're going to rely on her and she's already stated and it was in what the County Department of Education put out on June 2nd we're basically saying we're not coming back for the whole school year now I don't think most people realize that it's in here but if to to at this point say we're not coming back for the whole school year so because we're gonna rely on her so much to things and we've had a conversation one is that because I've asked about that question too because I didn't see that at the document I know others have had concerns about that the metrics that we're looking at the reason they're saying they're supporting the idea of going into right now is the idea that testing is is a big possibility and a high rate of community transmission those are the things could we even ask when those start decline because if you have talked to folks three or four weeks ago maybe public school it was we were making these create hybrid plans everyone it was just as of recently than a change so you are 100% correct that is in that document of that recommendation at that time so what I can do is find out what is a new position what is the new metrics because I'm not sitting here telling you guys tonight this is for a year I did not I do not want that I don't think anyone wants that and I also think that that's an important piece that we need to figure out when what would trigger us to start coming back for two right now I know the inability to effectively test and the high rate of transmission is what has led them that not I've not heard the you can't come back until the fair they're not there P but the vaccine is ready so that is something I will keep pushing on because I know that's for us that it could be 18 months from now and we can't use that as a metric so we have to get kids back right basically up to us regardless right but I'm just saying and if it's no different than a board policy these are our words we're saying we're going to follow why not change it to the the metrics or whatever because what we're agreeing to here if we're sick is assists without distancing guidelines by and we say all four of these people so if we're including hard work and she doesn't change her position then we're wiping out the whole school year and then I don't think that that's what we want to be here discussing it's not like I told everybody here I don't know but the way it's written that's what we're painting ourselves into a corner on and I just that's poison pill for me if it I see it as toggling back you know this is where we start in Brooklyn if I Ranma I thought ever feels some safe today we've got to look at this month a month that is question-and-answer session let's see four weeks from now where we're happened and let's let's re-examine where we're at adorable and I don't see us making a decision tonight that's for the entire year not even an entire semester but I think Donald's point is if we're if it's in this saying we're following that guidance and that guidance remains the same are we putting ourselves into a corner and so my thought would be is if we can clarify that in any action that we take that we don't use metrics other than a vaccine then at least we're on the records showing that that's the way we want to and we want to hear the data from them we want to hear what's happening and then we want to make the decision to miss Sanderson's point based on what we know about our community because Sacramento County is a very large County and if this and I have a prepared let's say it's more in the south and we're totally totally clear here well that's it that's a different decision so I think I think what I'm hearing you say is how do we remain our autonomy and flexibility and not be tied to one recommendation in here because CDC has some right me a lot of them are lying but but that's the one I know that you not talk right because because if you read the June 2nd publication and I think most people's missed it because the footnotes dr.
Gibbons has changed things I think that I have the right to run my classroom the way I see fit and if I see that as being mass required then is that not my right as a teacher I am I to sense where there is the that yeah it is your right to run your classroom as you see fit but you know just clarifying I think some of what may be unclear about you know that the social distancing required from masks is you know one of my considerations for voting the way I did was your classroom that you know there might be times you have three kids in there three pieces through three students in there and I I didn't really want to saddle you with that responsibility or a carry Hamilton for taking her music class outside to have them sing you know I know this car classroom sizes I've been in our school rooms I don't have a lot of confidence we're gonna be socially distant enough for most kids to take two masks off anyway but I didn't want to saddle you with that responsibility when there was no need to or someone that brought their classes here and the teacher set up hearing there were 20 students out there you know I think you know it's it is gonna be the up to the teacher as you said but I think you know honestly there's gonna be very few times if that's really a choice you know the way those buildings laid out right okay and I think that that's that's that's the flexibility that I was trying to give that it can be the teacher's choice you know as long as you're within the guidelines we've laid out i Paulding elegan mcdonald's owner/operator nine restaurants wife teacher two kids in school welcome wish I could have met you on different premise but that is what happens 600 employees for three months of war masks Iowa's terrified even make that happen in my restaurants and it has gone over extremely well do I talk to people every day about masks absolutely not that big of a deal it's just the thing when the cool kid wears the mask everyone else wears the mask where am I going it's easier to start stringent to back off I think it's easier for us to enforce the hardest rule they won to move to a place of where we can relax and I think it's a small price to pay a small inconvenience to have to know that we tried our best to do the right thing it made the comment about Walmart requiring mass different areas requiring mass full states doing it we don't we do have the fewest cases or lower cases let's keep it that way we have an opportunity to keep it that way so I just I think that we have an opportunity to be a leader and to set a precedence and I'll say something completely that's probably not gonna I'll lose all credibility but I'll go for it we also have the opportunity to be a leader in our County to do something and we have other schools on the opposite side of the spectrum where is the opportunity for us to be able to share students and share teachers if we are truly in a place of divide it could be a middle ground it could be an opportunity for us and so I just would like to throw out the option that we can consider that as well and I thank you guys for listening and I really think it's easier to start difficult start stringent to relax the rule as you go thank you so I kind of made the point before but I want to try to go back to it again and and I really want to what this gentleman just said where it's where it's the teachers responsibility and judgment call to to make on whether they require their kids to wear masks by saying that though and not having this standardized format that's where we would need as parents the grace to say or the grace period to say hey listen my particular son or daughter is going to a classroom that is is not a standardized approach like the rest of the classrooms right so maybe this teacher decides that they don't want to have masks and and or our little looser or aren't enforcing the rules so that that's that's the kind of ambiguity and in the standardization of when a face mask is required as I guess that I always return well I think a lot of that too also could become a parent's responsibility and and duty to to call that out no I'm not no no what I'm saying is if if you're uncomfortable if your child is coming home saying no dad we're we said the winner of five-o sitting at his table today without masks well that's something that the school system needs to know well I'm not trying to I'm trying to say is maybe all of this structure framework does 'l cannot exactly like their thinking and the risk is too great but we're not going to discover that some weeks in advance that's all I was just trying to reiterate the way that I've been previously based on some conversations I think I will make it short and sweet er than the last time I was up here we're talking now about current opening for the next two months maybe it's going to be decent whether kids go outside we can have outside classes come November things are gonna change this mutation of the kovat is almost a daily hourly minute thing and so the functions of dealing with that we have to make flexible and fluid decisions now what are we going to do in November and December if this thing is still going rampant and our kids are still put in the situation where they gonna go to can't go outside well I guess they could wear coats with can't go outside and have effective teaching I we have a lot of building space in these buildings I'm sure you guys have looked at it you've probably figured well we could put a class in this room right here we could put a class in the gym we can put a class from the cafeteria these are large classes but these classes are still going to be in a need for education so as we get into this thing as we progress and go through it we will we will come out on the other side will be positive we just got struggle to get there we're all gonna suck it up to say all right this is what we have to do to get to tomorrow just get through today tomorrow will take care of itself thank you hi I had a question and then a statement my question is is it possible for someone on the board to move than an amendment be made to the plan after the plan has passed for example could a motion be made that masks should be mandatory and that the rest of the plan is fine as is is that I don't know the protocol so I wanted to ask about that I think once it has passed I don't think you could have meant it I think yet done amend it during the process or just down the road well either down the road certainly yeah I don't know we would have to speak with our attorney on how what how binding this is you know like we discussed earlier I think future circumstances will require changes to the way we do well and I know that the Indiana State Teachers Association is in favor of masks and has asked the governor to consider mandating at statewide and has agreed to consider that and make an announcement at some point in the future in fact is something that the governor mandate something that starts very next day for us the mayor man the mayor dori mandates that the county any anyone that mandates that yeah we follow that and you know again it's plan is something that whatever the circumstances are will kind of dictate how we go back and look at the plan things things that the plan will probably change but as far as the exact process on how that happens I don't know okay thank you for that and quickly I just I was thinking about mr.
to Syria is not on the same page every tenth man she's the one who wrote the footnotes for the county document on June 2nd and so if you go into a pending say on the footnotes of what she wrote she says vaccine only well suppose the moderno one isn't ready to go by September right and we are sitting here and they have 20/20 and we so so to clarify to not touch that thing I'm not trying to put words in your mouth but if we're tying ourselves to that there are so much guidance I mean we can either exclude that from any plan we have or mean to be quite on you which week before we can strike that from there as it as a context as a condition if that makes right I don't want to limit the flexibility because it is it well because he is even if you got rid of this one woman's position that this is the only Road you still have Centers for Disease Control there you still have California Department of Education there right so and so when and it's not like everybody agrees on that point when you can look at National Federation of high schools saying any of these criteria meeting you can come back I come to school then okay why lock yourself in on that one so I just so would it be appropriate than if we would would have meet the need of you and others that we did some sort of aspect that we exclude that recommendations from the guidance because there is guidance is consistent with CDC with eh but but we could weaken Astrakhan is from the vaccine piece to say we would use that Mazal evaluate all sorts see that that would be something ours if you read it as it is it says entry criteria schools is clear to reopen by and that's what if she never clears us to reopen we're never going to reopen right that's starting to be you can even change that to say the work before will taking into consideration these games because they it is it is here here's the thing is I'm not doctor we do need to take guidance from medical professionals but I think we also have multiple sources you want to make sure you're utilizing a consistency approach within those and not like I'm hearing you say is pigeon holing yourself to one thing with one opinion from one person positive right it's no difference than when no different than when we do board policy it's and I always say can we put may instead of shout we can tap so we're gonna do that it's a living breathing document literally all right is there anything else from board members did I have some cards from audience what they were talking about the motion how do you how do you I'm going to take public comment do you want that for comment well I wanted the board to get all their questions sometimes we have these the board go opt and ask questions is somebody in the audience as okay is it okay if my aren't using the directed specific to sit down [Music] these emails and parents the information you gave us today because there's a lot of concerns from the parents that it's going to be like it wasn't this pretty and we know just from right now that it's going to be told a night today but they don't and there's a lot of concerns regarding that so if you think maybe not as detailed enough but give them a some kind of direction some kind of our goals are and these are following their achieve these goals and even if our staff our goals are and this is how we would write these folks something everybody has a pretty picture a picture of how this is going to work and then one school starts and we're in this flat they can refer to your goals and they can maybe protect you the principal or a teacher and say okay this is a goal that's not being achieved and this is why I think it's happening to you yes so one of the things is just for the board we did it in the board packet we plan to make this whole document light and then we also plan it and we were just waiting for direction then we will give a more scripted this is the plan that was recommended this was a public district the plan is proof here's what we are starting a line will give it very specific but we are going to give access to everyone additionally as we improve our plan because we do believe we're going to be toggling hopefully quickly through this system to get to it everyone back to their we're not hiding anything in there we want everyone to have the information in there it's just been evolving everything somehow have a slow start up with that number there's going to be a number of kids who parents absolutely want them in school for whatever reason that's really when we can get kids back safely that really is the plan to model is where we can start getting folks back that that's where we're heading we just need to get to the point we can get back and get people back and keep staff and students and families safe is is exactly the model that we're hopeful that you know we might be making this recommendation tonight and in four weeks we'll be ready to start you know maybemaybe lane to do magical abilities in national I'm sorry yes that is our current recommendation Thank You Kenny gallery is we know there's also a frequently asked questions document that we put up together for Phoenix we just have made up live in new we do anything till after tonight but that's ready to go all tomorrow yeah I think you know with you right now it's actually the same information extracted and smaller so it's cutting much density is formatted so a parent to pick it up and and then things like have cut away and roll in the plane I don't because for the board and I probably shared this but the number one question I'm getting daily is we discuss uber select we want to know the plan you know we been wanting to figure it out this way what what is the plan we need to figure out as a parent I need to know and that's why we are looking for tonight to have that because otherwise it puts everyone in limbo from family students to staff and we would rather concentrate our energies in this last three where we push to try and get this thing dialed in and it's based on what we know today and I'm not kidding you guys all know I talk to you to you later last night I said no life was good you know and it looks like our later action thinks it changed and in some some anyway yes we have put in you know 20-hour days easily a lot more long I'm just trying to keep up with mr.
Jenelle's observation about the cool kid wearing the mask and as somebody who teaches in middle school that that really grabbed my attention thank you for that sincerely so there are there are two types of cool kids in the classroom cool kids one is are the kids who actually sort of carry that title for whatever reason in the building and the other is the teacher and as someone who also has two children in the school corporation I do have concerns about my children being in a class where the teacher won't wear a mask for whatever reason and so then the kids in the classroom follow suit I certainly understand there's a difference between my class of twenty one for example in one of my periods on skyward right now and Doug's class with only three kids or people being able to go outside but if if I I want to be respected as a professional and in generally speaking I always trust my colleagues to be respected as professionals as well but as a parent I'm very concerned as a parent I am concerned that we have to set the bar high for what we expect from the students and as a teacher I recognize that the bar can be set high for what's expected of me and if I take off my mask for a class period and say I don't need this I've just told 21 people that they don't need it either and I think that's significant and I just couldn't leave here today without saying that thank you [Applause] Jared Jernigan banner graphic and parent of two but I just have a question that will help me writing my story and maybe help clarify this for some people we're saying that this plan is going to continue to develop and I applaud you for that obviously that needs to happen but what does changing the plan mean does that mean we come back here again in two weeks and sit for three hours I think we all know how I probably feel about that but or does that mean at this point mr.
Jordan email me of 2:30 in the morning I really appreciate you in all seriousness I can't want to compliment mr. Jordan for his efforts and the team they've been working with them we started with a group of principals and we brought we mean you should see the quote zoom or the Google beat now we do this there's a lot of people giving a lot of things and we know we have a thought of everything yet and that's what's keeping us up at night it's because we want this perfect we wanted the best we can do but we know we're not going to have everything solved and but and I almost speak for Mike but I I know when I'm getting emails at 3:00 in the morning from him and I'll look at the date stamp cuz I'm not up and it's you know pace got added this is the plan or this that's this that's the type of we after this and we bill it's not ideal it's it's not non-ideal at all it's not what we want I haven't been an educator who says yes this is the best thing but in the circumstances we're living in right now it it will do the it will be the best we can do and I'm committed to that and I can tell you that every single person on that zoom people [Music] and our fingers in preschool although actually everybody thank you okay all right I have three cards like we haven't guessed so a lot better but [Music] get up welcome all right but if it's gentle often and I could hope mr.
Gibbons and the committee are deputized to make changes as they need I'm just kind of curious what the protocol for that is okay all right there we go I think the safe consideration just say is that the plan would only be strengthened with changes outside of a board meeting and we'll note that in a change log but we certainly wouldn't take away anything out and certainly we I'll discuss that with the board we want it decrease the expectations I guess if that makes sense and just to be clear because I've heard some additional comments mass are required by all staff and all students when social distancing isn't possible that's not a choice that's a requirement yeah we can whoa we'll check the language and again you know we won't hold we're gonna work with the bidding and clarify expectations and you know make make adjustments with needed just done clarification before that yes so just seeking clarity a six foot rating or six foot distance if I'm standing here and my students are back where mr.
can appreciate I felt decided four children have just don't unfortunately a little taller than I am for children that are in your school district that I recently become a guardian I'm obviously way too old having sixth graders to a senior and so I really started this and I'm really hoping that as a place and help is available the last time a service for my students - enourmous very self-motivated machine well but sherry had AIDS and so you know but she still did the work minutes of trying to do the best good because she knew she didn't have to because and I see now that that's not going to be an issue this time right right my child is a fifth grader isn't there taxi difficult child yes [Music] Dudley and right i it was all I could do to keep them to do an allergy to working day and that was really anything care how he did it just did it and so there was no accountability and that wasn't as much as I am is there accountability for the students too and for the school district because if I'm not mistaken our funding the schools funding so it comes from students attending school and not to be late just answer the question because I was fightin so actually the budget isn't proof is actually based on our enrollment last year but we don't want to just say it's about the dollars wherever we are so committed just because we usually front about the Navy a model your attendance get you the dollars but this time we're actually for this current year coming out we're actually funded off whatever we received last year we'll get the same without the whole budget another conversation but but yeah so it's a different model for the coming school but is there capability for the students to check in on a daily basis yes so that they're attending school where there's some funding or discouraged yes that was missing last year yes and I know the plan came out and my hat was I 301 two freshmen sophomore and senior and I know that there was a plan that came out that said okay they're going to go to classes 154 from 90210 they're gonna go to classes 4 to 6 you know 4 to 8 from but that never happened there was no checking in there was I mean there's like you don't have to get up and jump this is ridiculous and they're sitting on they get up they do some work you know and then we had a consequently we spending two hours a day with my just saw down and the rest of subjects there was just no way we've got a chance even Joel and his ready stay the same so they went down visually but they basically stay the same so those of us those are the struggles and I'm home but I'm not a teacher I'm a teacher and I owe them too I've been grant I didn't owe it to them grandmother an equivalent to a grandparent so I've got a few years you know above all of you as far as trying to get on the school is what Davis mentioned earlier and besides that there needs to be some way to help some parents like myself dealing with the life of the technology-based Google and Aaron is tricky and my sister was helping me lost and I'm trying to I can't trust the six of the beverage and his assessment as to what's big turn in and we can never get it to match ever you're not you're not the only one don't feel like you matter and I don't think that we're totally inept either you know so I mean I have you know the equipment the kids need and I haven't services that I hopefully you have a computer they have printers they have Wi-Fi of Anya but just between the technology that's being juiced now we should I know we're all furnace so so I don't know that that is a problem hoping that Lisa awareness that we made you know workshop that the parents did we offer just to make sure we're all on the same page to know how to help um again and what mr.
Cox's would it not be acceptable that I could not wear a mask that what we're saying with the guy glans gotcha but as long as if it's within three foot and the student is there I I'm a math teacher but I think that's bigger than three um then I should be able to technically teach without a mask correct right I just wanted to make sure that I was understanding that correctly again one thing I thought about too with the plan and the virtual learning that you may have already considered but when they decide on the teacher who is going to take that over I wondered if there was possibility to have them start a little bit sooner than the third for those two days of teaching I've already started my stuff a little bit in canvas that takes a lot of time so again consideration of either starting the virtual learning with students a little bit later to give teachers time that teacher time or inviting the teacher to consider having an extra day or two a pay they're working putting that together so again you might already consider that but another concern of just making sure we meet the needs of the students and at the elementary level especially canvas is a new beast and it's a challenge at our level so thank you hi there my name is Isaac Curtin Stein I am an incoming freshman at the high school and I just wanted to say from a student's perspective I think many of us view being at school and transferring the virus it's more than just about us it's about bringing at home infecting others infecting grandparents infecting great-grandparents my grandma's had a double lung transplant my great-grandma was 97 years old I don't want to transmit them and I also want to be able to see them as well so it's about more than just the students in our health and safety and also I think masks are one thing that will stop that from transmitting in school and also transmitting at home so I would just like to say I think it'd be a good idea to mandate masks because as a kid I'm guarantee there was going to be a lot of kids that won't wear masks and it won't follow social distancing and that's important as well as for us but as well as for our families - thank you I agree [Applause] what exactly that fire yeah there there's guidance of recommendation push out and the deal we provided mass will be Decker bar you so there's been a lot of discussion about the e-learning program has there been decisions maybe as to what faculty and staff will be in charge of that program as far as a teacher dedicated to that program no that's why we're waiting on that's why we want to get our plan approve so we can plan for it and share registration and then streamline it okay and do you have a formula to decide how many faculty and staff would be needed to be assigned to that program based off enrollment yeah I don't have that information for you right now and I don't want to deal and speculation I'd rather do with hard numbers and see what those numbers are and then discuss with Kristen and the gcta and the building administrators and go from there hi okay hearing none can I get a motion to adjourn have a motion take it a second okay and a motion in a second all in favor aye all opposed motion passes thank you for coming and be careful you
