mcdaniel had that big touchdown cast catch one reception for mcdaniel 35 yards on the other side of the field uh for for the rebels hubler no surprise leading rusher 75 yards on 15 carries one touchdown has long been 12 yards and as mentioned no completed passes for the roncalli rebels i thought i think the the two players that we thought were going to show up for roncalli and and play well the quarterback aiden their quarterback and and the hubler kid both have had really nice football games i mean they both rushed it really well um it looks like the quarterback leftler can actually throw so maybe we'll see him throw it a few more times in the second half uh it looks like he's pretty good arm certainly he's a strong kid so i mean we'll see more more throws but they were successful on the ground so [Music] make a quick mention of luke bless out their number 22.

what's up starting linebacker for the for the bulldogs son of tim bless tim's tim's only son graduating senior special night for a special night for the bless family here i know there's a few blessed family members in the stands and several others watching online across the country so it's a talk about a football family with tim's dad and his history at you indy and tim's brother mark head coach at avon high school and his other brother scott the head coach of bloomington north uh that is that is what blessed family is all about so a special night for the blessed family and luke that's a lot that's a lot a lot of years of experience a lot of wins because they're all all very successful so yeah that's great yeah this could be a tremendous night for him you said it's a number 150 if uh bulldogs won yeah career win 150 on senior night for his for his only son so it'd be pretty special if that can could be a really gonna happen that way absolutely now we talked about the weather a little bit earlier and no rain inside but the wind is picking up a little bit and it's actually shifting a little bit out of the east now so we'll see if that turns into a factor here in a bit i don't think wind was a factor in carter's missed field goal at the end of the second quarter but he just pushed it a little bit yeah when you step outside the box we took a quick break and stepped outside the box it's actually a little bit breezier than than uh than what you'd expect um it's probably it's got to be born between five and eight miles an hour or something like that so it's enough to affect the football if you're kicking field goals at the end of the game or something like that or you're trying to kick one deep uh definitely has a little bit of an impact absolutely well here we go to start the second half dogs lead 17 to 14.

my guess is going to kick this one in the end zone ball rests on the 40 yard line and carter's going to put a shoe behind it and see where we can get it to land kick is going to be received at about the three yard line brought out looking again the left hash and he's got some running room down to about the 28th that return from coverage the 175 senior for the rebels well let's see what happens roncalli certainly the kind of football team that would have won in the locker room and thought through things and come out with some good options here let's see if they mix it up a bit or stick with their strategy to just pound it uh straight at columbus north roncalli starts the ball first and 10 ball in the yard line just starting the second half here at columbus north high school ball in the left hash give it to the back he's going to bounce it quickly to the outside and that's a pick up about six yards that's more that's more like the first half right really good run king and scruggs on the tackle for the dogs early in the first half coach hubler he runs hard but he's quick too he has some speed for sure they go back to him again this time he's up the middle and bounces it to the outside and he's up to about the 46-yard line he's he's he's a super fast kid but he's really quick left to right he bounces so well no huddle for the rebels first and 10 balls on their 47 yard line right hash trips with the wing they give us to hubler again right up the middle same play he goes for four yeah if you're watching at home you're watching the line play it's it's not like uh the columbus north bulldogs are getting blown off the football i mean it's a it's a stalemate but hubler's doing a nice job of finding very small holes and gaps and getting through it that's what's going on it's not because the defensive line is getting blown off the ball quarterback lefler keeps it this time and close to first down looks like he might be a half a shoe short bring out third down and a short one and lefleur's under center he's just gonna bowl ahead for a first down i'd say every time he he molds ahead you think he's gonna get through three or four inches and he ends up with two or three yards absolutely strong kid yeah this this pace this this four or five yards straight ahead running will tire the defensive line out they need to get a stop left was going to keep it this time up the middle still rolling ahead safety is getting involved now that's a five yard gain for the for the rebels well fewer if you're wondering if they're going to come out and use the same script as that first drive they have stuck with their straight ahead running game and it is working for them i'm not sure why they would deviate split backs this time last time they ran it with lefleur and they will he will run the same play but he's going to give to the back this time he's really good behind the line of scrimmage that one they had [Music] luke bless on the tackle there for the dogs behind the line of scrimmage good stop that'll bring up third and three ball on the 34 yard line yeah gave us the hubler he's going to bounce it to the outside and they're they're running this little they're pulling their their left on that play they're pulling their left guard their left guard if you watch this kid at the snap the roncalli left guard when when they run that ball in the middle is making a good block on the on the right edge uh on columbus north he is he is doing a nice job and that's why that ball keeps getting sprung out to the outside like that really good block that's the third of the fourth time he's done it i mentioned before mentioned before because of the delay we have a little bit of a chance to watch the uh replay in essence here from inside the booth and you're exactly right they're pulling that left guard he's getting up on the linebacker and that's trouble trips to the left here and lefleus is going to throw a bubble pass out to the flats and he is sprung loose across the 20 down at the 16 yard line that's a completion of kyle lockhart 511 junior for the rebels pretty good play call right there i mean if you're you know you're getting tired you're you're run run run i mean they're pounding the rocket the little flare bubble a little bit of a bubble pass out to the left is a nice play for uh roncalli there back to the regular formation here in the pistol and it looks like there's a false start bearer there by the z receiver for roncalli a little head start [Music] yeah that that hurts that's actually uh really helpful for columbus north i mean they're on their their heels a little bit a little bit tired probably in this drive and that five-year penalty is a big deal it hurts enough that that kid ended up on the sideline there's a jet sweep again oh just a great play mr king mr king comes from the strong safety spot there and it's a tfl a tfl tackle for a loss really really good play from a guy that's playing probably about eight yards off the football to start really good play bring up second 15.

and luffy's going to boot out this way he's going to throw it again it's a completed nine yards to go third and nine bring up 39 from the 15-yard line 727 remains here in the third quarter big opportunity here for the dogs 2x2 formation for roncalli they go on a hard count north will not jump now looking to the sideline to get their play call play clock is at 10 seconds same formation left foot in the gun looking to pass still looking to pass and that's overthrown we'll bring up fourth down great cover looks like the field goal team is going to come on the field for roncalli and john john there's a reason i'm up here not down there but i just i can't help but to wonder you move the ball so well five six seven yards at a time and then they uh they start throwing the ball down here and the dog stop them and here we go we'll watch the kick but yeah five yard penalty stop your drive give the defense a second to rest it's never surprising the kick from russell is up and it is good so yeah you're five yards of carry you you you're rolling and and you get a mistake like that and it turns it you know what looks you know 10 yards looks a lot shorter than 15 yards [Music] [Applause] [Music] back here at max anders field 17-7 is where the scoreboard lands now 7 22 left in the third quarter roncalli tease the ball up on the 40 getting ready to kick it away why this back in the game blythe and scruggs back deep this one will go to blight that the 11 yard line is going to come right up the numbers looking to get outside and brought down the 27-yard line hey now this is great i mean i you know tyler looked like he was hurt badly he was he was limping they must have magical tape on that ankle down there i don't know what kind of tape they have but uh to have him back in the game after what looked like a probably a game ending injury great to see him good for you tyler the value of that crh sports medicine team that trips to the right here for the dogs hammonds runs outside still outside lane yeah he's got room to go he's across the road right down to 39 yard line so so coach were you a tape guy i mean like did you need to be taped up to play like you do that guy no no not at all not at all not even your fingers or anything like that no you're a two-finger tape guy not at all i i tape didn't make me comfortable i'm not a guy i don't know maybe we talk about offline but a lot of guys like tape to like tape that's my point no i wasn't i wasn't a on the bench at three o'clock in the afternoon getting taped until six no yeah what about like uh eye chopper that i black no i didn't do all that but you know what i did have i did have one of the uh one of the the screens one of the ipads like a pirate no no one of the the face shields yeah yeah i don't think they can use those anymore but yeah a couple years ago when i was in high school yeah we could wear one and you look like darth vader yeah i mean it's an intimidation factor yeah i got you i always said it was protect my eyes but that wasn't the case hammond's back-to-back he's gonna throw a mean bubble out here that is he just threw it too far jeff's off tomorrow trying to target mcdaniel and that bubble screen for it to work you know he's got to take another step two three three or four steps back and that ball's got to be thrown kind of a little bit deeper in the backfield he just threw it he almost threw it to two or three yards past the line of scrimmage that ball is really supposed to be thrown two two to three yards behind the lines for me third and ten now balls on the 37 2x2 formation haman's in the gun looking scrambling now oh you flipped it to him yeah and trying to get the cast that's incomplete really close to a great play there boy again roncalli nice nice defense there i uh i really thought calling to start to come out and roll it up but uh good stop by roncalli carter ward on the field first first punt tonight first punt yep matter of fact i'd we have seen north punt this season but i don't have the stat in front of me but not very much three times i think maybe and he does it all he hits a boomer here it kicks back a little bit a little bit unfortunate i mean that's a that's a 50-yard kick and uh unfortunately gets the pounce to bounce backwards there on him about four yards five yards could have kicked forward nice ball and again you know we talked about it earlier in the game field positions you know really big deal especially when you play a team like roncalli that just wants to they really just want to run the ball at you when they have to run 80 yards versus 60 yards um it's the difference in touchdowns and field goals i mean that's what happened on the last track you know one penalty puts them in a position where they can't keep rushing the football and they're not in yet so they end up kicking a field goal it absolutely matters carter kicked that ball 15 yards over the head of the deepest receiver there for roncalli first and ten roncalli gives the ball to the middle that's a good stop in there by by the dogs we have not seen that much tonight really good tackle by oscarman ostermann and lofton in on the tackle there for the dogs the second and ten ball in the 22-yard line five minutes 33 seconds remain here in the third quarter we got him nice pass yeah nice completion across the far side of the field to the 42 kids got a good arm i mean that's a good he's rolling out to his left he's that's a tough throw he just made a tough throw i'd be surprised they don't keep trying a little bit throw it up throw it a little bit more i'd be surprised completion locker for the rebels and this is lockered in motion now on the jet side we're going to give it to hubler in the middle black bounces in there another good stop by the dog short game looks like maybe there's a face mask in there look at that little herky jerky one hubler went down i could be wrong about that but a herky jerky coach you see going back to hole to being a hold on bring it back good good eye i'm not sure i noticed the herky jerky out there so good i looked like he was you know you got a little head head bob there as the tackle happened ball moves back having a penalty back to the 30-yard line that's why i'm not familiar yeah 2x2 formation here for roncalli five minutes remain in the third quarter inside give us up the middle of the hubler and then now those defense alignment are changing the game here a little bit coach they're controlling the line of scrimmage he had 15 15 16 carries in the first half something like that he did 15.

for 75 yards yeah he's already carried it six or seven times at least in the second so he's over 20 he's getting close to last week's total for carries i mean it will is it's great he looks like great athlete it will take a toll trips to the right here trips to the field and sprint to his right targeting that same receiver locker number five over his head and brings up third and 18. [Music] i mean it's a completely different offense when you have to play third and 18 or second 18 versus you know second and sixth second and five i mean a completely different game especially on a run first offense absolutely trips to the right same formation as last play here for the rebels and they're going to run a draw play he's got room to go big hit takes a shot there i'm not sure if that was jamal king on that delivery but that was a it was just a shoulder into the shoulder it was jamal king really really tough hit looks like the punt team's coming on the field here fun player to watch roncalli jamal king is a fun player to watch i will say he needs to keep his eyes open though he can't get behind you i love watching him hit i'd love to see him have a pink that's what i love i love jamal heaven that's what needs to happen today redmond back to receive the punt from roncalli that's going to be a short punt in the middle of the field and a columbus north bounce which is buried at the 36 yard it's a line place to start columbus north took the ball over the 36.

not quite the my guess of how this second half would start here been a little bit different with the ball in the air from roncalli and north being stopped after one big game but we'll see how they do here trips to the right first and ten 336 left to go it's a screen out to cast editor and he gets an initial game great defense but he actually ran the play the way he was supposed to he's frustrated but uh that's the way you run a bubble screen you know you run it two yards fan line of scrimmage and he ran it right this ron kyle had a red from the get-go before a progress spot gets him a gain of maybe three call it two second and eight ball in the 38 right hash trips with the tight end to the field side for the dogs blitz coming from roncalli we're going to run an inside zone to redmond he's got room to go still going really great 10 yard run fantastic first down for the dogs ball on the 47 yard line no huddle you got to be happy for this kid he's out there getting the ball he's getting a bunch of touches uh you don't want to see other players not playing but uh when you get your chance it's always exciting so it's good for redmond two by two formation ribbon in motion this time they're gonna throw the bubble to him and he's got lane there's gonna be a hole that's a hole on the wide man it's got room to go that's a i don't know who's way over there there was a it looked like a good block but that that flag was way too close to him to not have uh that one be a hole that one looked like a hold on the wide out on the far right yeah it's one of those plays john as you know that everybody in the world can see you over there because you're so exposed and if you get your hands outside the frame and all it's going to be an automatic flag yeah the little guys at home you know learning how to block us i mean we love you that your block has a wide out you got to keep your hands inside once you start to fly outside it's going to look like a hold no matter what you do plus your corner's moving on you so as soon as he tunes it turns away from you turns into a hole if you're still holding it if you if you're grabbing them trips to the left here for the dogs hammond's going to sprint off to his left and really i mean close to a tackle for a loss from roncalli turns it into a four or five yard gain there that was a nice nice play by hammond they blitzed their corner from the far side of the field and uh hammond just ran away from it after the penalty second and 16 ball on the 42-yard line two minutes remain here in the third quarter 17-17 all square on the scoreboard ball in the left hash trips with the tight end for the dogs hands in the gun gives this to him he gives it to him excuse me he's bouncing outside he's gone down the sideline and he's gonna be tripped up at the 20-yard line that's a that is a gain of [Applause] 41.

yeah big huge gain right what a great night for redmond this is outstanding abraham you know owen bolt for the roncalli team number four is a pretty quick kid who catches up with him i go right back to the well again inside zone this time he's gonna be stopped for no loss i mean if you're watching this at home watch the corners uh roncalli is sending their corners every time i mean if if they just threw a quick pass out there i mean to the wide i mean they're leaving the wide outs vacated i mean the three or four three or four different plays that corners that blitz this uh this drive certainly mixing up on their defensive call sheet here stop it to play to reset the play clock from the from the white hat here we go second and ten after no gain trips to the right for the dogs ball in the left hash all resting the 21 yard line blitzers again as you said coach hammons gets outside of him oh across the middle of the cast yeah yeah and i love it right i'm a defensive back i love dbs i love the way they play the game he's got his arm raptor maybe the linebacker there but he's got his arm wrapped around cassette or his hip in a place where he was taught to hold on to slow him down but i thought it was pretty obvious hold and then 70 yards away from the play didn't see the end of that play there coach but i don't know if if uh hammond's head his hand had hit a helmet but he seems to be favoring his left hand a little bit let's see if that turns into a problem they blitz again and he's got cast hitter downtown that's a touchdown [Applause] 22-yard strike from hammond's to cast etter it's right right down that seam rod down the hatch we have we have we've watched that play i think that's the we've watched that movie at least seven times it feels like we've seen it the same round as before the same round second verse same as the first i wonder if the other team actually gets a tape in the film i mean i can watch this on replay you gotta be able to see it right carter what's up p-a-t attempt is good and the dogs are 17.

cass that are down the middle it's there [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] all of our student athletes please remember information and t-shirt sales are located at the main concession command please stop by tonight and sign up to take a part with you thank you very much for your support back here at max anders field 57 seconds remain in the third quarter dogs lead 24-17 after the hammonds to castetter strike in the end zone it's a good good drive put together there yeah by the bulldogs really nice really nice card award mr everything back to kick again that ball is going to be received at the two yard line from the rebels up the hash he's got room to go got more space to go across the 40-foot return down to the 47. yeah hold number three he was he was convinced when he caught that ball he was going to make up some ground so that's a good return i saw a replay of a commercial from i think it was the 90s converse commercial bird magic you know remember the two-tone converse sure i was a converse guy i never owned any any converse now what was your go-to brand i mean these kids now they're paying attention to you know under armour nike or whatever what were whatever is available i think i did it on one pair of jordans um that was a big deal for me but left keeps it here in the middle and goes nowhere uh we we had maybe they still do we have team shoes and basketball everybody has the same team shoe yeah and then after the season well then your basketball shoes become your street shoes yeah yeah so that was hot tops oh yeah heavy they weighed seven pounds each yeah oh yeah yeah you thick sold yeah yeah trips left trips left for roncalli here second nine we're gonna throw the bubble out there and actually pretty good for them they've run that play successfully now two or three times tonight they're not getting massive amounts of yards out of it but they're getting five or six every time they try it they were not able to engage jamal king in a block there so he made the tackle after a short game it'll be third and four we're gonna take a break here to go into the fourth quarter 24-17 that seemed fast looking for a new home well you start of the fourth quarter 24-17 dogs lead yeah yeah that's outstanding coach you were a high top guy i think we're all high top guys at one point weren't we well we had yeah we didn't have a choice remember that was moving ahead for a first down for roncalli there was a theory back then that was how you avoided sprained ankle right now all the guys are playing low tops again right if you're if you're any kind of real player yeah well they don't want seven pounds on each each foot either weight from the you don't want heavy shoes coach that was my demise the only reason i never got that division one basketball scholarship because my my shoes are too heavy i think yeah well it does impact your vertical [Applause] trips to the right here for roncalli first and ten ball in the 40-yard line 11 22 left to go in the game ruffler's dropping back he's going down the field this time the ball is up and it is caught oh that is i think that's tip and then caught it is caught as i said i've got the benefit of the delay on the computer i'm going to take a second look at that here as soon as it cues up but roncalli has the ball first and four now back to their touchdown back to the big guy i mean you know this is a football game folks i mean quick couple plays big play there up the sideline their quarterback this leveler kit is is no joke i think he's as good as many of the quarterbacks we've seen so far uh this season and we've seen a couple good ones um he can really float he can throw it control i'm surprised they don't throw it more uh according to the roster we have roncalli has two number 13s i'm going to assume that's john troxell the senior who made that catch on the sideline he just he just took it from charlie winnick charlie was in position he had the ball in his hands and from what i saw on the replay here yeah chocolate just took it from him in the air [Applause] [Music] back at max anders field 1109 remains in the game 24 to 24 after that roncalli score the game is all square special thanks again to ruoff mortgage of asian technology group first financial bank columbus wealth joe lee rentals and julie development overhead door of south central indiana for their generous sponsorships that enable us to be able to stream this game to your homes this evening because of our limited ticket capacities scruggs and blyth back deep they'll kick it to blythe again he receives at the three-yard line up the left hash looking for room he's got space he's got space oh my gosh he's tripped up by the kicker he is having a knight returning kicks coach has a heck of a return all the way down to the 40-yard line and goodness that's that's that's a great return a little frustrated because north had had blockers out there in front of him and somehow that kicker came through and just grabbed a shoelace and broke from there guys ready to block him too a little bit unfortunate there [Music] trips to the right here for the dogs ball on the 40 yard line give us to redmond in the middle he's going to power ahead for about three yards i tell you if you're if you're wrong you you line up to kick that ball you look at this at the at the roster and you say let's kick it to the sophomore because you don't want to kick it to scrubs right and i tell you i think boy blood probably has he probably got 100 yards of return he's had two big ones i mean he's got 100 yards of return yards tonight and we got a dog on the turf here yeah that's unfortunate that's uh looks like uh same thing we've been seeing maybe like a dehydration yeah treating as a cramp let's hope that's all it is i mean she's stretching it so my guess is that's what it is so while we wait coach since the injury doesn't look to be too significant hopefully it's not were you a parachute pants guy i mean did you have the pants with zippers um i i did i had one pear no what no they were they were jean they were blue jean blue material yeah i didn't wear them very long though i'm not sure if that fad burned out pretty quick yeah chicago chicago area northwest indiana like you had jeans with zippers yeah like long zippers all the way down yeah down the side yeah like yeah that's interesting but it didn't i don't recall that maybe i'm wrong somebody correct me i don't recall it sticking around very long redmond in motion here this time yeah excuse me that's lofton it was a i think it was a quick fad did it did it was it around longer in western michigan no it was a quick it was uh like a one pair and done kind of thing and you had how many pair one just one mine were black they were like uh made out of like uh whatever you know like like a polyester kind of yeah maybe we were all issued one pair we just don't remember how that worked like a military issue two by two formation third and seven ball in the 42 yard line for the dogs hammond's back to pass oh he's got him in the middle oh he's got a sideline he is going off to the sideline that's a completion [Applause] i think they just caught him in the wrong coverage there ron college dropped back into some kind of zone you got three guys sitting in the pockets and i think hammond's is a good enough quarterback he'll eat you up if you want to do that first intended for the dogs ball in the 42 gave it to lofton this time big pretty big hit there talked about number four a couple of times owen yeah only number four owen volk had a couple of nice plays earlier in the game ran red been down on the sideline at one point that was a good hit invoke a six foot 210 senior for the rebels playing yeah looks like a pretty stout kid rush defensive end that dog on the turf earlier was redmond he's over here on the sideline getting work it's a bubble pass to loft in the backfield and really swallowed up quickly yeah a lot lot does a nice job of catching that ball um probably two a little bit too hard to catch that ball that didn't do anything successful with it i think hammond's just kind of overthrew the ball a little bit threw it out in front of him too far and locked and kind of lost his footing a little bit too bad i think he had a little bit more room to run get caught in stride third and 12 here for the dogs 8 58 on the clock as it rolls ball on the right hash 44 yard line two by two formation hammond's back to pass again roncalli is gonna blink and he's gonna spin outside and he's got a connection made at the 27 yard line for another bulldogs first down [Applause] another completion of life he is healthy coach looking good i mean he had guests that are over the middle as well i mean you had a choice you could throw either one of them [Music] same formation two by two gun set for hammonds looking again going back to blyth on the out and having a good night another good news dylan redmond checking back into the game here yeah a couple of bumps and bruises here and there coach he's getting a workload that he's not used to so yeah he's having a great night and what a fun night for him huh i mean you don't you're playing behind an absolute stud in huffman and to get a whole game where you get to carry it's just awesome good for him i mean i think everybody in the stands wants to see huffman you know carrick probably carried every down but he's fun just a fun player to watch but the fact that redmond's out there tonight i mean even huffman's probably happy for him bubble pass completed to mcdaniel there from hammond's that's another first down for the dogs first and ten ball on the 16-yard line left hash trips to the right this time trips to the field for the dogs and redmond's going to get the ball [Applause] that's a that's a big stop by greg kirkman 511 180 senior for the rebels be second and ten yeah to your point coach it's it's a breath of fresh air confidence booster what have you for this bulldog team to have such a such an x factor as huffman go down but redmond just fill in and be able to not only compete but uh possibly win against a really strong roncalli game team [Music] yeah he had him wide open on the side there just over throws life hammond's on the sprint out just over the throws blythe bring up third and ten talk about it earlier this season that's that's one of those balls where you know the quarterback's out there and he's running out on the right wife is so open that he just throws it over right he's just excited yeah that's exactly what happened there third down 10 to go six minutes 50 seconds 650 remain on the clock ball's in the 16 yard line roncalli blitzing a corner again yeah they are bringing him down and ham is looking he's got oh that's too bad yeah cash center and it looks like patel and cass that are just getting in each other's way a little bit there and one knocks it out of the other's hands and that's too bad both just playing hard trying to make a play and end up in the same spot together and good players just got on top of each other a little bit there because it took a while for that play to develop and as we've talked about before when the play takes a long time to develop guys get into the wrong spots and so stuff like that happens field goal attempt up by here by carter ward is good this time that'll give the dogs the lead back 27-24 639 remains to be played here in the ball [Music] game [Music] what does it mean to believe in something to truly support and get behind it to be committed and invested in making sure it succeeds and grows at first financial bank we go beyond banking providing resources for dreams that matter and giving back to projects that make a difference as our family grows our commitment to serve the community grows with it first financial bank because together we're better i know when to expect it yeah i know when to expect it now but now it takes a minute it's a longer delay than it was before it's a whole it's a whole bunch back here at max anders field 639 remains in the game dogs lead 27-24 after the long drive by the bulldogs and the field goal from carter ward [Music] carter back to kick it off this ball is going to be received at about the five and he slips and falls on him [Applause] what a mistake there that ball is going to be down at the 5 yard line i think it's papandre just you know he slips he slips on it we talk about these lines all the time turf monster you know he just he just slips right that's the slick line the five yard line is the slickest one out here yeah i mean it's super the turf is fast down there it's it's uh it's unfortunate [Music] good break for the bulldogs there ron will start here with the ball their own five line and it puts them in a situation they now have to throw the ball [Music] two by two formation quarterback's gonna keep it up the middle he's got room to go he's all the way down to the 20-yard line for a gain of 15.

leveler's just a he's just a a tough kid a big kid hard to bring down i think we got a injury down there and bulldog on a turf for a minute hopefully everybody's okay that'd be interesting interesting to see between some of these quarterbacks we've seen this year of course we we saw the kid from gibson southern who's committed to purdue and he's just has an absolute cannon but you know luke hammonds and and and this aiden leffler from roncalli both juniors different in how they play but both really good athletes and i i just can't imagine that they would not be contenders but they'll play at the next level hammond's trouble i think hammond is as athletic a kid as we've seen i think on the football field um his his trouble will be at the next level will be will he continue to play quarterback right so he he's capable to play at the next level the question is will he stay in the position he's in because he's going to be man at the end of the day we've seen kids every single week that are six two to six five and 220 pounds of 215 pounds and that's every single quarterback in college with the except maybe drew bree i mean breeze was the you know the odd guy purdue but a lot of these guys that are you know five ten to six foot tall that are great quarterbacks in high school they they can go have college careers they end up playing you know corner safety right get recruited as athletes exactly they can be recruited and as good behavioral i mean these are good kids right these are dynamite attitude kind of kids and they're the kind of kids you want on your football team absolutely nate osterman the injured bulldog is able to get off the field on his own power looks to be okay hopefully he can get back out there soon yeah it's just dings and dents you know these these these kids are big and they're moving fast so you're gonna get occasional bruise banged up guy and gonna come out for a player too first intent for roncalli oh and he's going to cut it loose down the sideline cuts back up to the middle and tripped up at the 40-yard line that's yeah mr king baron hubler again with a big carry mr king trips him up yeah jamal makes a good play there to save a safe touchdown and hubler is still really fast he does not seem to be tiring or slowing down here at all he's carried it 30 times and running as fast as he was at the beginning of the game first and 10 ball into 36.

lefleur's going to keep it this time he's going to bounce it to the outside knocked out of bounds after a gain of eight there's there right back you know again it's a difference in field position and in just confidence right they immediately go back they get a big gain they go immediately back to straight ahead and running football right there from this point in i'd be really surprised how many times they they actually pass the football they get into this space and they can rush it from here on in we'll see the left is going to keep it again right up the middle all the way to safety's big hit at the safety level but not before he really picks up another 16 yards that's a big hit right there absolutely drops him there but you know don't celebrate too quickly that's another first down first and ten ball in the 17 five minutes and 10 seconds remain hard count not successful for roncalli they'll look to the sideline for a play back to the line of scrimmage trips with the wing here ball on the right hash 27-24 dogs lead gave us to the back he's going to be tripped up after a gain of two [Applause] roncalli football team's uh it's a good team a lot of history of success they play a tremendously strong schedule prepare themselves well for tournament time you always know what you're going to get when you play roncalli and that's a good solid football team that's well coached second and seven another hard count attempt well this game matters to them i mean not not only does it matter just to you know get get back on track winning football games if they haven't beat columbus north i don't think it'll last two or three games give it to the back again he looks inside busted to the outside spinning still in bounds brought down about the five yard line and that's enough for another rebel first down they're gonna have first and goal four minutes five seconds remain clock running three timeouts still for both the squads [Music] a couple of missed tackles there unfortunately clock still runs 10 seconds on the play clock 340 remains in the game clock five on the play clock hubler is the back again he's going to scamper in the end zone untouched this time they run that flag they've i mean i don't know how many times to run it it feels like they've run that play 20 times tonight [Music] they just they they're running essentially right up behind the guard and then bouncing it around the end and then just he's not getting touched for the first three yards well as we talked about before there were zero passes on that drive coach and they don't need to pass it yeah you get in that position you can rush for five to eight yards of carry you're not gonna throw it at all i found a level of success p-a-t kick is up and it is good and that makes the scoreboard read 31 for the rebels 27 for the dogs well we've been to this football if you grew up in columbus you grew up with ovation audio video the ovation technology group is much more the local leader in local i.t solutions 25 years of keeping companies connected and running efficiently networks and managed services phone systems and temperature control data security and hd thermal imaging grow smart with ovation technology group at ovationtg.com ovationtg.com a proud sponsor of columbus high school sports no we're not going there back at max andrews field 333 remains on the game clock find themselves behind again we were just having a conversation during the commercial break of the bulldogs have found themselves here before matter of fact every game aside from week one so we'll see if they can respond as they have previously kicks away this time is going to go to scruggs yeah it's a receiver at the 5 yard line and he is swallowed up he's down at the 19th he's trying to get himself to the left to get behind his blockers and roncalli had that covered well i think you you gotta kind of go away from blythe at some point you mean [Music] i think they thought they had an upper hand on it but he's had some great returns tonight who knows scruggs might have been surprised they even kicked it to him there dogs will start with the ball on their own 18 yard line first and ten three minutes 28 seconds remain two by two formation for the dogs red men in the back and that ball out here to patel on the bubble screen is dropped yeah hit him yeah the little guys you know patel's a great player that one hit him in the in the in the shoulder pads right in the plastic you catch it with your hands guys and won't bounce second 10 ball still on the 18 yard line 325 remains in the contest hammond's back to pass looking to cast that or this time he's up the field gets knocked out of bounds at the 29 and should be a first down for the [Applause] bulldogs yeah i like i like that last play nice for cass setter but you know what patel came right back there after the drop the drop ball the previous play and ran a really hard route that made made it easier for cass letter to be open there it was a great a great route that patel just ran trips to the left this time they're going to give it to redmond and he's tripped up he's a good player right there it's luke schwartz on the stop for the rebels gonna bring up the second and 11 ball in the 28 and we've got a looks like redmond might be on the turf again dealing with another cramp it seems hopefully that's all it is looks frustrated so you mentioned high tops earlier did you ever did you ever have a pair of adidas low cuts no laces you mean did i take the laces out right sure well who run dmc who is not but i never thought of myself as you know flashing a kind of guy to pull my laces out redmond able to get off the field under his own power but he started cramping as he was walking off again so we'll see if we're able to see him again yeah he'll come back out second and 11 ball in the 28 trips to the left for the dogs hammond's gonna sprint to his left looking to pass might be downfield coaches coaches by the way by the way coach cars are acting i'm going to guess that's one of his big boys he's a guy downfield what do you call that we call that disappointing yeah coach carr whose car is disappointed [Music] expressing his disappointment through his mask we'll back him up here yeah let's see scoreboard says second 16 i believe that is what it is so ball on the 23 yard line got to get half of it back right here you got to make it third and third 8 seven two by two formation ball in the middle of the field hammond's in the gun hammond's looking to pass still looking throws it out to the cast that are in the flat he's got room to go and as you said coach he picks up more than six or eight he's probably about a 10 yard gain maybe a little more bring up third and four i i don't know how i mean this is a good wide receiver cast center is a good wide out i don't know how that kid is that blanket cover i obviously every player just thinking the same thing i'm not sure how you don't spot him with the with the safety at all times trips to the right here for the dogs third and four ball and 35 two minutes remain in the game again hammond scrambling and looking still looking he's going to run it and he is tackle out of bounds folks in front of me think it was a little late that was on the other side of the three foot three yard whatever white line i mean they're just trying i think they did the right thing holding on to it by the way but it was definitely a lot of bounce i agree we don't want to make a game of it over flags i agree first down for the dogs 155 on the clock one minute 55 seconds ball in the right hash first and 10 ball in the 43 2x2 formation hammons to pass looking for cass header again this time it's dropping that's too bad yeah it's too bad cass that have just dropped one there you're right though coach he is keegan is playing well and he is running very sharp routes tonight and you always talk about the younger guys watching at home but playing receivers not just running out their meal to catch the ball is running crisp sharp routes where you're running your receiver your corners off and making yourself available he's doing a great job with that tonight hammond's back to pass again looking looking still looking and looked a little too long that time [Applause] he might have gained a yard actually ran ran a little bit but i'm getting my yard on progress the clock will stop look like there's a timeout taken by the dogs 143 remains in the game dogs trail by four twenty seven thirty one two timeouts left third and eight balls on the 45 yard line what do you what do you like here coach i mean you're you're passing the ball well and you have not you know you're third and ninth third and eight whatever um i'd probably i mean they've been doing something down here on the right side of the field on the near side of the field cass setter and patel have been kind of running off of each other and i think i'd probably either you know have these guys run some kind of interference for each other throw it up the side the cast center or over the middle uh patel or i you know the last time they they ran a little drag route to cass letter he got that 10 yard gain the last time he he basically started right side of the field and ran kind of underneath the linebacker cover and he ran one linebacker into the other linebacker that's that's a good play for them as well he can drag they drag cassette across the field they might get that route again uh to spring open so they've got lots of options here in my opinion go get this first down third and eight one minute four to three seconds remain two by two formation for the dog as they go on a hard count and roncalli but they don't come across the line of scrimmage so we'll reset same formation he's going to run to the sideline get out of bounds short gain there will bring up fourth and seven wow are now in an interesting spot fourth and seven one minute 37 seconds on the clock two timeouts for the dogs i'll tell you that roncalli defense on the field that roncalli fan group over there all about 88 of them about as loud as i've heard them all night 2x2 formation for the dogs 137 on the clock hammond's back to pass and he's going to try to run a screen that's picked off by the rebels it's owen volk for roncalli who picks off sniffs out that bubble screen and picks it off that's staggering once had a pretty pretty good night he's had a couple of nice plays you know congratulations to him for making a good play there uh that's unfortunate for the bulldogs roncalli takes a takes the time out here 131 remain on the clock dogs do have two timeouts to be able to stop the clock coach we'll circle back here in a second but be ready to um share your offensive player your joe lee rental and development offensive player and your overhead door south central indiana defensive player of the game i'll circle back to here in just a second but i uh just a reminder we do have two middle school contests this week we have north side and central eighth grade play monday night and that's it east i believe it is and wednesday night the seventh graders play north side central i believe here that's here at max anders field north high school so always good to see the little guys out there they're not little by the way they're not there to see they're gonna see the young guys that's right yep and pretty soon sure enough they'll be out here and we'll be talking about them pretty good crop of uh seventh and eighth graders you know about i think you guys probably have 60 or 70 total maybe 80 and we have about the same it's about 100 north sides got about 70 between seventh and eighth combined yep a lot a lot of good kids wanting to play ball and that's stopped in the backfield by really great often big stop clock will stop timeout taken by the dogs 127 remains on the clock tackle there second and 12.

all right coach you ready for your jolly rentals and development offensive player of the game yeah i mean you want one from both schools as i said last time it's you can do whatever you want there are no rules i mean i like the uh i like the kid the running back from uh roncalli the the hubler kid had an outstanding game they ran it all over the place and i think i give some credit too on the on the bulldog side i i really think redmond had a nice night we talk about cass center all the time but the fact that redmond gets to come in and play the game he got to play tonight that's you know great he did a nice job i don't know i think he's over 100 yards per game and really great to see him do that um defensively i think uh roncalli's number four you know owen volt i mean i think he just you know he just helped him they may not win this game but he put him in a pretty good position here [Applause] plays blown dead in the backfield due to uh lack of progress quarterback lefler with uh with the carry a little bit of frustrated maybe on the on the whistle but it was appropriate so last time out spent here by the dogs 121 remain one minute 21 seconds remaining to get the ball back with 40 seconds left on the defensive side for columbus north um it felt like we talked a lot about my my uh my guy mr king um a lot of good tackles played downhill had some good pass defense and and actually made a couple of big tackles open field tackles to save long plays from becoming touchdowns so really in my opinion he played a great game let's see what happens here special thanks again to rudolph mortgage ovation technology services first financial bank columbus wealth julie rentals julie development overhead door of south central indiana for their generous sponsorship of our of our stream tonight that's third and 14 balls on the 32 yard line one minute 21 seconds remain in the contest dogs trail by four dogs are also out of timeouts so barring a first down let me get the ball back that's a jet sweep and he is there's a flag there's a late flag over there stop the clock he was tackled tackled in bounds after a gain of about 12.

we'll see what the tackle yeah okay we'll see what happens see what the call is i've not seen a preliminary call yet that's a face mask that's the end of the game that's a personal foul that's gonna expire the game that's too bad there's still 113 on the clock here roncalli at this point likely just to take a knee with a four point snap advantage maybe three probably two clock runs they will take their time and run this clock down and that is exactly what will happen 55 seconds remain on the clock as it runs down dogs out of timeouts that's too bad good football game columbus north will not have a contest next weekend they were originally to travel to ohio that game has been canceled due to restrictions in the state of ohio so no game for the dogs next week the next home game our next game will be a home game here against terre haute north at max anders field on september the 25th that'll do it here from columbus north final score 27 31 in favor of the rebels thanks again for joining us and we hope to see you here in a couple of host weeks [Music] you

10 minutes for public comment and anyone wishing to uh comment on any of tonight's agenda items you can do so by emailing our recording secretary kathleen genther at dartmouthschools.org and ms ganther do you have any um emails on public comment uh to date i did receive two which were forwarded to the school committee uh during the day perfect thank you very much as soon as the uh meeting minutes are approved for tonight's meeting um you know at the following meeting or whenever the minutes are ready uh to be approved uh those emails will become part of tonight's record all right at this time i will entertain a motion to approve the regular session minutes of september 1st okay i have a motion by mr nunes a second by dr jenkins on the motion any further discussion cheer hearing none all in favor aye aye i'm sorry roll call [Music] shannon jenkins yes kathleen admiral yes mary wait yes john nunes yes thank you very much everyone at this time i'll entertain a motion to approve the executive session minutes of september 1st 2020 so mr chair with the stipulation that they be held until the matter for which they were intended is complete second uh once again i have a motion by mr nunes a second by dr jenkins on the motion any further discussion roll call please miss gunther miss oliver i will abstain shannon jenkins yes kathleen admiral yes mary wait yes john nunes yes and thank you very much and thank you miss gentler at this time we have a consent agenda item fundraising activities for the dsma uh dr gifford um yes mr over i believe you have received the number of items the things that they're looking forward to to um have his fundraisers and director of music is here along with i believe we call him the president of dsma and to answer any questions you have on that but we do uh recommend approval of those items thank you uh dr gifford and uh said mr benoit yes yeah thank you i'd like to welcome you to uh the school committee meeting and um all the committee members have received this in their packet do any of my fellow members have any comments or questions uh regarding this dr jenkins first i just want to say um thank you to everyone i know um just from a limited time that i've been on here we've asked for you know just some detailed reporting um not to say anything fishy going on but um just because we are a public body approving your budget and i think this is maybe the most detailed budget we've we've ever seen so i definitely really appreciate it um of course with details comes questions and this is not so much a question for me but i just want to ask you about this so the public can understand can you explain the role of consultants in the organization i think with the band and the percussion because you do i know it's part of what you do but you um spend a good bit of money on that and so i think just for the public's sake um having a little explanation of what those expenditures go to would be helpful yeah so in the fall the marching band's you know part of the class that we do um so the marching band is integrated in with the curriculum uh for the high school concert band class so the school pretty much funds 100 of the staffing for that um because that makes total sense since it's part of the class then when we get to the winter season we have our winter percussion ensemble and our indoor color guard many of the costs from that because they are um their extracurricular activities get passed along to dsma to kind of cover that we list people as consultants but many of those people are what we have as educators in the fall so it's the same staff pretty much across the board you might find a couple new names that are different designers for the winter season because we have a couple specialists that'll you know work with the group as designers um for the percussion color guard pretty much the same educators you see in terms of personnel on the ground it's the same people all year just the expenses that's shared between the school department and the dsma throughout the throughout the entire school year dr jenkins do you have any further questions or any comments no i'll just point out thanks i appreciate that right um i'm a broken record about these sorts of things but i will be a broken record here talking about the extent to which um many of the activities in our school rely on private funding not taxpayer dollars and this is just an example of this um you know it's great that the schools are able to fund you know the classes as they should but you know lots of other activities the stipends are you know provided for the coaches and whatnot and so i appreciate the role that you guys play um and helping us fund that and that sort of the excellence that comes with um you know the the band and the color guard and percussion um is is in part large part funded by private money so thank you for that anyone else have any comments or questions regarding this i will just say yeah no i agree with my colleague dr jenkins this is very helpful um this was uh the best i i feel as well to date um it just amazes me the amount of fundraising the sma does um in you know what you do for our students so um thank you to all the parents out there and for everyone that's involved with dsma and for supporting the dartmouth school music dartmouth high school music program at this time i guess i'll entertain a motion mr chair i'll move that we approve the uh fundraising activities as presented from the dartmouth school music association second emotion so i have a motion by dr jenkins a second by uh mrs amaral on the motion any other discussion perfect jay herring none roll call please chris oliver yes shannon jenkins yes kathleen amarillo yes mary wait yes john nunes that's my wife's the treasurer i think i'll abstain thank you very much everyone and thank you um for everyone from dsma and from uh and mr flint for joining us thank you thank you thanks ross thanks ian uh next up under old business uh turn it over to dr gifford for superintendent's update on the start of school sure thank you um old business it seems like we've been living this forever right um but just so you know we had um all of us have been in and out of the schools all week obviously the teachers have been in for the last two weeks with professional development learning about the safety the health and safety protocols being put in place preparing their classrooms i actually was in a number of them today especially the programs where the students will be returning tomorrow and spirits were high um people were excited to be thinking about welcoming their students back tomorrow um we just as a reminder starting tomorrow our students are pre-k students whose ieps require them to be enrolled in our integrated pk program as well as our students who are enrolled in the paths pass and pals programs will be returning to school in person and as i said those classrooms are ready to go with lots of different things on for our kids um obviously i know people probably have more questions for mr kylie in a minute about ppe we said we're so tired of talking about it but it's important we know um we did have another meeting with dr brahmaj this week we invited our nurses related services pre-k teachers folks that were going to have close contact with kids and immediately so it was a good another good session he actually came to the high school we had that in the auditorium and um i think folks had had a lot of questions answered so i'm hoping that um helps people continue to feel comfortable and confident about kids returning um to school i do want to mention uh obviously we've had a lot of information going back and forth about the techa program and i am putting out a facebook uh post in a little bit when we get just to update folks on just what we're talking about here and as a reminder the district is still required to provide education for folks that choose not to come to school as well as those that do this has been quite an undertaking anybody that's working in education knows because it's very complex not only if people choose a virtual program for example we still have special education needs whether it's inclusion minutes c grid minutes program minutes to be able to properly staff and meet staff those kinds of programs for all needs and meet the needs is is again quite complex but we're doing the best we can at this point um so with the last minute information that came from the department of ed we were waiting for quite a while for them to come up with their platforms that they were going to offer districts that they were partnering with companies to offer districts the best quality programs that they they felt were good quality programs that aligned with the massachusetts offered curriculum that aligns with the massachusetts frameworks etc as you know we've discussed before the more up-to-date information came quite late and wasn't quite what we had in mind with that said we did make decisions we chose edgenuity as the platform for the high school it's a very self-directed program curriculum that students will be um with with the high school staff guiding them especially mr mr gill the assistant principal on making sure they choose the correct course pathways and have the courses that they need those students will be enrolling in in the ingenuity program the techa program we chose for the middle school at first we thought we would do edge annuity but i know we had a few questions on why we changed we fell along with the middle school staff that that was the absolute best program given the two virtual options we had because it did offer certified teachers to guide and offer at least two live lessons a week for the courses the middle school staff the admin team didn't feel that leaving middle school students kind of on their own and more of an independent course pathway with edge annuity that that was not the best option that we wanted to offer the kids a little bit more supervision and real teachers on the other end with that said the guidance department will continue to monitor those students maintain connections we want to make sure they stay on board they keep keep up with their lessons etc because as i've said before these are still our students they're not unenrolled from dartmouth public schools so they're still on our roles the middle school is also making it clear that any uh student whatever we come up with if we have um after school programs a club or something like that and that is a virtual that they can attend will they absolutely would be welcome to attend those kinds of things and the elementary we love it there um we did because we had grant funding which it's not endless but we chose to hire dartmouth teachers new dartmouth teachers to ha um staff the k through five elementary virtual program so again these kids are choosing not to come to school at all we ended up with five teachers we just couldn't find a qualified teacher that we felt comfortable with for grade five so we have k through four um with that said we had to make some decisions and reassign some folks in the district to uh pick up some of those classroom hours for our grade five so those were coaching positions that uh will be split between two two coaches at this point and then they'll be doing their regular coaching the rest of their day um as i indicated previously we also had to shift a few other people's responsibilities a part of their schedules to assign them some duties or responsibilities with students knowing that we don't have an endless ability to hire staff so we have to reallocate staff as as best as we can to make sure our students needs are met um so those teachers have been up and running we did provide a stipend to one teacher for an after school um before and after school kind of like a mentor monitor coordinator we called it just to be able to make sure they have everything they need and have constant communication with them as well as a parent it's called to kind of help those teachers out uh i think all but one of them are very very brand new teachers um so that's that we did receive an email finally from the techa group today after many attempts over the weekend last week etc it was been pretty hard to get in touch with them or receive responses unfortunately but the latest today was that parents will be receiving their um their information tonight unfortunately i wanted it today the first thing was today and now that's what i've gotten now so i am going to put that out in the facebook thing again i understand parents frustration we are as frustrated as they are um uh mr kiley do you want to add anything about the ppe because we've had a lot more going on with that as well sure yeah we have we've um distributed more than 27 000 pieces of ppe and or related items around the district to be ready so you know we have we have what we need um we have more still coming in that that'll only enhance what we're doing um and provide backup stock for us but um yeah we're wearing i think in good shape we're looking at upper filters we've ordered uh reported three orders of hepa filters and i expect to have two orders in this week those will be the first ones we have those need to be first installed in the nurse's office and in the isolation space and then uh will be provided also to staff who have medical conditions um votes requiring the hepa filters so we're working on that um and yeah it's been it's it's been incredibly busy getting prepared and ready to operate in a whole new way and uh you want to add a little bit about the um lunch program that you've got planned sure so it was it was nice that the usda um approved free the continuation of free food from what we what we had from the spring for kids so what we are working on is obviously we're going to have food for kids that are starting tomorrow and moving forward in the schools and then october 1st we will start both supplying food for students in school food for them to bring home for the next day and because they won't be in school the next day it's every other day on the hybrid plan so they'll have food for that and food for kids who are remote so if kids are fully remote we haven't quite nailed down an exact time of day how that would work that distribution it won't be the same as we did before because 11 to 1 probably isn't going to work for those families at this point given how this whole has evolved but we will provide hours that hopefully will be easier for families to access so that they can get food at home and until december 31st the usda has stepped up and and funded that so food will be available for all kids free that's great mr kylie i think that's about it as i said we're the teachers i spoke to today and tas etc around the buildings and this week they're looking forward to the kids coming back i think i think once they come come in it'll start to really feel good for them and um people will start to feel much more comfortable and and ready to go so that's our update for our opening at this point well thank you dr gifford thank you mr kylie um i'll start off with a couple of things um first off uh your hats off to uh mr tebow i thought his um his communication with the parents are very well done my first experience here my youngest daughter's going into dartmouth high um she's a freshman so i i thought the communication coming from the high school was extremely well done um and look she's very i'm sure just like a lot of the high school students looking forward to getting uh started with uh remote learning i i still think that dartmouth made the right decision starting the year off fully remote and slowly transitioning into a hybrid program as for the techa program at the uh at the middle school yes i i feel the parents frustrations i feel the administration's frustrations and um it it's it's very difficult i'm really disappointed with uh department of education as well as techer and their lack of communication um to the school districts it's so unfortunate um i think they could have done much better uh with the communication i wish that we would have known um in dartmouth a little bit more about the program um however you know we we just didn't have the information that we really need um however i'm hopeful uh with that last communication dr gifford that you said that you've got some more information from them that we can get that out in a timely fashion to the parents that are desperately waiting um for for those emails from tucker um i i just you know urge the parents as much as i'm sure you're running out of patience um to have patience um we're in an uh just a very untimely and um unfortunate you know period in our lives and we'll get through this but as soon as we have the information we will get it out to you that um dr gifford um in administration has assured me that has assured us that that we're we're on top of this as much as we can but we can only do so much because this is in the hands of both techer and the connexus platform which is run by pearson online learning um i really wish dr gifford that we could do an in-house uh academy uh like we're doing at the elementary school because i i i props to um to everyone in the diamond public schools for for that initiative for that initiative because i think that um that's that's wonderful that i think that's going to pay dividends in the end of us handling our uh virtual learning academy in-house at the elementary level um i think that's really going to be a positive experience can you tell me dr gifford do we have someone a teacher at every grade level are there multiple teachers how exactly is that i'm playing out we have a new teacher at all the grade levels except grade five so we're splitting that like i said between two of our existing teachers they're coaches actually so we've disseminated we've given them each a a few hours of the day to uh provide instruction for grade five students so the grade five students will have two teachers um yeah but the rest it's one and the just so you know the numbers we've actually had and this is just a little bit of an estimate you know off not precise at this moment but as of today approximately 75 students chose techa it was actually more than i thought it would be around 50 at the high school right now with the edge annuity and 148 at the elementary level wow kudos to mrs oliveira once again despite everything she's been involved in whenever we started talking about this she i think it's gonna kill her or i don't know but um she's been wonderful organizing this hiring the teachers we actually went through about 90 applicants believe it or not for these positions and about 40 phone calls inviting people to interview for the positions we laughed i said i i was teasing and i said i think i saw her on the street waving a lady down to see if she won um but she worked really hard with that and that's why in the end you know she to handle the whole thing in the day-to-day was going to be absolutely impossible so we did offer stipend to another teacher um just to help with that and also of course these new teachers will have a regular mentor as usual they're all house i don't know if i mention this at quinn um yes they they're all housed at quinn in the big music room we had to kick will out but we they found a spot for him the big music room at quinn also has two rooms off of it like small maybe half the size of my office um so we're setting them up as best we can getting them materials partitions hopefully around their desks so they're all socially distanced and um i talked to a few of them today they were also out helping which i was going to mention in my update so i might as well just mention it mr galashar and the tech team of course has been have been phenomenal with the dissemination of chromebooks i think they would still over there tonight they've been in on saturdays and sundays to get these chromebooks out and organized inventoried and out um i've met jonathan here on saturdays and said you know go home kind of thing and um but those virtual teachers were all running around with pack i don't think they knew what they were doing yet but you know they're so young and we're so excited to have them but they were all there helping willing to help that's excellent yeah nice bags of you know books and materials and and things for those kids so parents were coming through picking everything up so like you said you know it's it's we've had some growing pains for sure especially with the techa piece but i know we'll get through it we have a great staff and um i i just know it'll be better as time goes on so yeah well thank you and then also um just uh thank you for the update mr kylie in regards to uh the ppe and just getting having the buildings ready to go i know that took a lot um a lot to make that happen so um are we pretty comfortable at this point that uh we've done as much as we possibly can from from a district standpoint that um we're pretty comfortable with you know opening up the buildings and moving forward with what we have in place i think so i mean i i think there's always more you can do and we are doing more like for instance those hepa filters and getting those in place and installed so that there is always more that you can do um but i think we have the ppe to support a healthy safe environment for folks um so i think if people follow the guidelines and practice good social distancing and and use good hygiene and um you know i think i think that we're ready um yeah we're excited i can't wait to see kids in the agreed well thank you everyone uh dr jenkins i just want to follow up and you know first i want to say thank you to everyone um i know how hard you all have been working both in the administration the building staff the teachers getting ready um i don't think the public sees that i mean we're all nervous but i don't i'm not sure how hard they know how hard you're working so i just want to say thank you for that i also want to really reiterate what mr kiley said about how important it is for us to follow the rules two stories today um lincoln sudbury and i think dover sherman have had to go remote there have been large parties of teenagers not following social distancing they can't social contact a contact trace and so they've had to throw their plans out you know out the window at the last minute it is on all of us to do this and you know i've been through a few buildings and i think we saw it too the other last meeting it's every minute of every day that everyone has to do this it is on us um and i really can't reinforce that enough particularly to the parents who are watching kids will be kids right their brains are are not quite fully developed right so we've got to do the best we can to stay on top of them it's hard i know i have two teenagers um but it but it really is on us um i want to follow up on the the techa issue um i do think it was the right choice um having gone through sort of remote learning with my kids and seeing what it takes for them to be self-directed learners without any support i think going with some you know instruction um you know synchronous is is a is a good thing and that is the right choice ultimately in the long haul um i do think both with techa and i think with everything there's going to be um kinks working out over these first couple of weeks and i think it might go a long way to reassure parents if there are some communications particularly from teachers from administrators you know that we're going to hold people harmless i mean i know i talked to you dr gifford you said walter lost his his you know internet in the middle of a negotiation i our internet went out in our house unexpectedly like things are gonna happen and so i think what parents need to hear is right some reassurance that like it we want everything from techa to be there and in place but if it takes you you know sometime tomorrow morning um we'll figure it out right and i think some reassurance to parents that like you know we're we are gonna we're all in this together we're would i think be very helpful particularly coming from teachers and building administrators because i think that's a lot of what the anxiety is about we don't know what this will look like we're worried it's going to fall apart right on our i know at least on my end personally i think there's a lot of worry about that so i think a lot of reassurance going out to parents um that we're gonna help you and your kids not you know you didn't turn something in you weren't there i think that that sort of reassurance would be very helpful to parents yeah i agree and also uh one of the things this latest email that again hopefully they said everything will be going out as of tonight um and they gave a contact name for parents but also that it said what i read was they said not for parents to worry because the children won't be behind so whatever they do to get them going and you're right so that's important yeah i think that's really important to get that out of communication to ease parents um anyone else uh this is amaroth thank you can you hear me okay i'm getting that little sign that says my internet is unstable um this is just incredible this is i just can't even um and to shannon's point i don't think that some of the parents in the district understand the level of of planning and thought i mean well they do of course but you know they're at the point now where that worry is setting in that anxiety around i think i said earlier like just gonna let jesus take the wheel like we're all eventually gonna get there um i i guess uh to that point actually i've been seeing and i haven't really looked today so i don't know if things are resolved but i've seen a lot of parents commenting that they don't know what to do tomorrow they don't whether they're some of them were elementary i'm thinking somewhere middle school and i'm sure there was some high school that they just don't know where i'm talking about the remote folks they don't know where to log in um any suggestions aside from i'm thinking as a parent maybe checking your spam folder updating your aspen making sure that your notif you know your emails are all up to date and accurate um any suggestions as to what they may do to rectify this prior to tomorrow would it be contacting the principal um i don't know if these i've seen a lot of messages and i've just been very busy um don't know if they received an initial you know notification from the teacher or not assume they haven't what should they do i'm trying to think about each level um uh let me think about that only because the different levels and who's in charge of and i'm trying to think of who would give them the best information right you know send to one then they call bush street then they go back to the school so let me just think about that and whether i put um i am updating an um a facebook message for tonight okay more um but there was something you just mentioned that one thing i know and again whether every single child had the opportunity or every single teacher we had a lot of teachers doing those virtual meet and greets these past few days so um you know i checked in with a lot of them that said yes they had gotten all their kids etc so hopefully that helped most folks but sure there probably are some that somehow something was missing but um yeah let me think about that and put it in the facebook message for in a little bit after this meeting because it'll be different levels and like i said i just want people to have the right information the best information yeah that's helpful um yeah it's sort of uh it's just i don't know um and you mentioned the just for my own clarification i just was wondering so those those fifth grade virtual academy positions which we couldn't fill you the qual you know you didn't find um candidates that to fill those spots the coaches are certified teachers yes yes yes yes okay um and um i saw a picture online um of the preschool classroom which was very cute uh i'm wondering um mr cosmetics and mr kiley thank you for answering the ppe questions i don't want to come at you with many um [Music] you mentioned like uh the plexiglass is that for like the isolation station or is that in those classrooms with those kiddos who can't maintain space and may possibly most likely don't wear masks are is that going in the classrooms as well so there's yeah there's different applications for plexiglas where it can be useful in this case obviously like you like you have in the stores where there's plexiglass around a workstation so um you know there are instances where we've installed sort of custom custom made by our maintenance guys fields around people's workstations that are high traffic areas to protect them and protect others but then there's plexiglas shields for classrooms the ones that i originally bought are sort of a heavy-duty thick plexiglass um and they're very sturdy and strong but they're also fairly heavy and they're either designed for a table or a desk [Music] and they are so when someone is going to be working in close proximity uh to a student can't maintain that social distance it's a barrier there there's there's in the deci guidance there's a recommendation to you know avoid using uh plexiglas um based on the fact that it's another surface to clean um so it's it's not really something that'll be left with a student on a desk but it can be used when working with a student so for close proximity uh they vary in size i have some more that are coming that i should have this week that are trifold and very lightweight so the ones i have are sturdy and pretty heavy um so these are very lightweight and can be are less less of an issue if it were to fall off the table or you know so so i have um an ample supply of those on the way but i think taking some time to understand how everybody's going to use them but yeah i can have 100 out there in in different classrooms right now and we're going to have 100 more that i've ordered that are the lighter weight and as things go you're going to figure out where they're most needed yeah yeah i don't think they'll be i my belief is it i don't think it should be one on every student's desk it's when a when someone needs to work with a student in close proximity i don't think it's great to leave it on the desk because to be honest i think it's just going to get flung off the desk at some point yeah accidentally somebody's going to lean up against it or you know so i i'm not i'm not a fan of that but um but the lighter weight ones there's less risk of that there there they would never hurt anybody or anything so i'm thinking of those kids i might know one who might think it's hetlan arena and starts not flexing right not you know not to mention any names but i might live with one um yeah no i i don't know that i have any more um more questions i appreciate the comments around the holding the kids harmless that's really important a lot of parents are worrying about that um i guess yeah i guess i don't have any other questions thank you thank you mr samuel mr news or mrs wade have anything else said mr nunes yeah thank you mr chairman uh a couple of things number one again i know kind of like a broken record because everybody's doing it but it goes without saying the uh the job that you know starting with central office right down to uh custodians in the building uh the work and you know and again the teachers administrators and everyone else in between uh all the work that they have done to get these schools up and going uh it has been phenomenal and my hats off to them um a couple of a couple of thoughts i mean in all seriousness uh i think everybody's gonna take a step back and take a deep breath and this is all new territory for everybody and i think uh you know there's going to be some bumps in the road as as we go forward with this the first few days and even when we get into october and we get into the hybrid uh situation and the hybrid schedule so i think if everybody just you know takes a deep breath and takes a pause for a second and you know lets everything you know lets the situations work out and the problems it will all get fixed and everybody who everybody will be fine and just to go along with what you know dr jenkins said and i you know two things number one i think the parents have got to be involved and number two in all services their high school students are elementary or middle school students you know i mean think before you jump you know i mean don't go you know someplace without a without a massive do your social distancing and you know don't be in a party with 500 other kids so that we end up like a dover-sherborn or a lincoln sudbury or uh punta cancer in rhode island type of deal we don't need those problems okay and nobody does so if this is gonna you know run smooth you know we need everybody on board to uh to do their part so that's all i'm asking thank you mr chairman thank you mr nunes and last but not least mrs waite hi um so yes i have to like echo what everyone else has said you know it's been a phenomenal job that everyone has done in our district and i have to say like i you know i sent an email dr gifford to saying you know justice that like i really feel that our plan is a great plan it's the best plan the slow start i think coming into the ab hybrid is going to um you know make the best transition for our students is going to provide like you know emphasis on teaching and learning so i feel really good about where we are um you know again i also have gotten those emails about tekka like everyone else did i was you know back and forth with kate and with dr gifford and with parents so i'm also crossing my fingers that that will get straightened out and and again holding those families harmless of course you know but i think in those cases these families aren't so much work they just want their children to make sure that they get you know their properties they're not worried about you know the being held harmless per se as much as just making sure that you know they can get off to a good start i think that's going to happen and you know to john's point mr news's point it's going to be you know possibly rocky at times but i think of those freshmen you know my sons of freshmen too you know coming in i have to imagine he would be a little rocky on a normal freshman day just like he was entering sixth grade um so i'm you know trying to take that you know patience as a parent i will say that you know families again there's a lot of you know to get back to kathleen's point there's a lot of anxiety um and you know i've heard from parents who are worried about having multiple children who are you know trying to operate in the same space and they're taking the communications which were excellent for mr tebow and others about saying you know don't sit up in your bedroom really to heart and i think again like i would say to parents you know after speaking with dr gifford again you know what i think what really is meant by that is creating a professional space not you know if you have a set up in your bedroom that's a desk and it's quiet it's uncluttered it can't be for my house but you know generally uncluttered and structured that works and again doctor kipper said what they don't want to have happen is kids sprawling across their beds like you know eating popcorn and you know being distracted so i think again like parents are taking these things you know they really want to start off well so it's a heart and they're thinking i have four kids sitting around the table with different schedules how is that going to look in practice um so again i think again getting back to easing that anxiety um is important and and again i think a lot my two my brothers two children down in north carolina have been in remote for a month um and you know again same thing once they got started you know knowing when the next class was it really started to flow i think again it's anxiety coming up it's been good to hear their you know path because it does you know make it easier to kind of anticipate what will be in front of us and i think once we get past those first couple days we'll feel a lot better but again like i'm really grateful i hope we can kind of get um again tech is squared away um but another one other thing before um i leave off is that i know that those parents of remote or excuse me the parents were going virtual for the year have also said that they want to make sure that their students are still part of this community so they're very concerned about the clubs and the athletics and i know we've kind of said that you know we're not going to leave those children out or punish them but you know we want to kind of make sure that they're developed as part of the community so um you know all those links to kind of getting into the clubs and when that you know comes into uh what we can explain you know that access of the high school where the middle school i think that would be really helpful for them so um but i'll leave up so again thank you uh shannon i just want to follow up on something that mary said and and i get that our recommendations for kids to not be in beds and be in an ordered place are recommendations um we've been having a debate about this for a long time in higher education um about this um it's really a privilege to have a quiet space or a table that is not your bedroom where you can study so i hope that we do not enforce that upon children for some children a bedroom maybe it's messy is the only place that they can go maybe they're sharing a house with you know 10 other family members it happens right i do hope that is what we prefer but i hope that no teacher or administrator will punish kids for lack of access to a quiet space lack of access to a clean space right um not every family is privileged enough to afford that and i think we have to be really comfortable really careful about um what we're doing because when we're in a school it's in the same environment right and there's no difference sort of in privilege in that school classroom but it very much is and so i hope that we're just really sensitive to it and also you know we've been having a lot of conversation too um you know at the university level about you know cameras on and um there can be a lot of emotional anxiety around that and i do know i do think we should have kids but i hope that we support um some of those kids in terms of we've had a huge focus on social and emotional learning that when kids are having issues with that that we provide the sorts of supports to them that they need because we well know that that social emotional aspect of learning is so fundamentally important um so i want to make sure i'm sure we are but i just really want to come at this from a place of compassion not a place of punishment and to try to understand where kids are and help them whatever environment they have have a good year to your point shannon um i agree i think it's important to note though um we did you know the committee did expect and show our expectations to dr gifford a more robust learning um environment and a more robust um star remote star unlike what we did in the springtime so i agree i think setting the expectations um you know because i i've heard stories about and even with my own kids of seeing student other students in pajamas and in in bed however i get what you're saying and i agree with what you're saying that not every family has um has a luxury of going into a a small room or into a study room to uh to learn so i think it's important i agree um to just be cognizant of that dr gifford across the board and i think um i'll just follow up on that and i'll say as an educator the clothes you wear don't really affect how you learn right if you're in pajamas you're in pajamas you're still going to learn right and so we've see i've seen like this all on social media people saying you have to wear this kind of thing you can't do this right you can't you have to wear shoes and like who's going to expect if you're wearing shoes right like again i what we have to focus on right is yes we need a robust education but a robust education that recognizes that some kids are in learning environments right um that are not they're not ours they're not conducive to learning so um let's focus on the things that that are essential to learning and not worry so much about the things that are less essential i will i will disagree with you with i wouldn't expect my student to go to school with in pajamas i would expect i wouldn't expect students to show up to a remote classroom in pajamas i'll leave it at that uh mrs amaral um i'm i i just wanted to mention too and i know you disagree with this uh but i heard from some families from the summer program and um i know that our program kids are going in person learning but many of our students who are not in programs but do require significant supports are remote and when you have a kiddo who who is able to attend and model better in a classroom environment with with very clear visual structured strategies and such sometimes a parent cannot get that kid out to dress appropriately and sometimes getting them just to have a shirt on and sit in front of that screen is the best that they can do and so to shannon's point i just hope that these conversations happen in an individual basis and that support is given and that there isn't a blanket sort of requirement that uh because that might it believe me there have been times in the summer that that um yeah i've had i guess i should clarify myself i don't think anyone should be penalized for this absolutely not i just think there should be some kind of expectation that's all i and everything should be dealt with on an individual basis did you have something mrs wait did you have any yeah i was but i was going to go down a slightly different i had a question actually more about the pace program at the high school just and that was probably maybe more mr tebow was in here um but i had a parent asking you know hey if my child you know and again this gets back to being flexible because we're at home you know pace is kind of i was always thought of as a time for kids to step back process their days you know find some extra help maybe have a snack you know so again getting back into the no eating of food you know again parents are reading all this and taking this very distinctive but if maybe if a child doesn't have you know some person that they need to speak with that day maybe better for their you know social emotional well-being to go for a walk you know during that time so these are you know again like kind of we've i'm hearing a lot of feedback from parents again i think so many things will be mitigated once everything's in process you know and again i think from the schools too you know they'll be kind of thinking about things as things come up and adjusting but oh you know i guess i have questions about how that are we gonna make or have students sit during that pace program i mean put pace period if they don't actually have someone or can they just say like i really need to get out and like it's sunny out let me take those 15 minutes to like for down time you know i guess it's you know again that was my question no that's i i think honestly the the word is flexibility i think we i think everyone needs to be flexible while we can certainly have expectations there needs to be flexibility and some kind of you know along that path would you agree dr gifford sorry i couldn't as we know that the unmuting is terrible i think from um as you know during the regular school year the kids sign up and they're accounted for when they go in pace um for my conversations with mrs tebow it's it's it's going to be a good opportunity for them to get that extra help or some of them just have those great relationships with teachers but we're going to encourage them but nobody to really take advantage of it but no one's really going to chase them for it if you get what i'm saying you know but for most kids again they have good relationships with some teachers they might just want to tune in and converse and see how things are going so while we are encouraging and expecting uh nobody's going to chase them around for it does that make sense like the flexibility is there put it that way i think that's important yeah thank you everyone for that uh good conversation uh anything else before we move on i just wanted to yeah as long as um a bunch of you just brought it up about um clubs and stuff kids being having that access i think we still have a question about athletics which again i was just going to talk about in my update but since you brought it up um i didn't want when the committee wants to have that conversation about kids some districts are not allowing them to participate if they're choosing virtual um so i mean it's not that we have to have an official vote but i think it's important that the committee comes to at least a consensus so that i can relay that information to the ad and and parents will know because that has come up with questions from parents as well i'll i guess i'll start on this um just based on some of the conversations that i've had um with representatives uh from virtual learning academies as well as uh department of education and is my understanding that even though ours while our students are participating in remote learning through tech or through ingenuity they are still considered students of the dartmouth public schools we should be progress monitoring them we should be um including them in any types of clubs activities and in my opinion sports as well because they are um they are members of our our school community um and that is basically what the what jesse is is saying from my understanding is that they are they're our students and we're still responsible for them we're just we're we're paying a tuition for them to take uh core classes remotely um so i'm under the impression that they should be included uh dr jenkins yeah i 100 agree i think all of our remote kids should have access to all of the normal sports activities whatever um again this is about empathy and flexibility and um their social emotional well-being and support them having access to anything and everything um that we offer thank you dr jenkins mrs waite yes and i'm going to echo what both of you said too i mean i said that before that that was a concern of mine and um you know what i think it's good for our community too because our goal is that after this year these students will be coming back and we want those bonds to stay strong between the students so you know and we want those students to feel you know ownership over being part of our community so i you know i i think we should now again against the sports we talk about transportation um you know and busting there may be accommodations that you know in those cases if those families please have concerns you know that and that's part of the large reason they chose remote that maybe we allow those parents to drive their students this morning you know if it's this you know particular event that competition you know and whatnot so um again i know we have a lot in front of us before we get to that piece but um it could be a consideration as well again you know we'll get back to that word flexibility but um that's what i'm thinking thank you mr nunes well i guess i i know where i stand in this one my answer is no and i'll give you my reasons number one if a student isn't attending school because they have some type of uh an illness or there could be an issue because of potential covet problems or any other type then they probably shouldn't be with adults and students in the classroom setting or anything of that nature if the other my other thought is that if the student just doesn't want to be in school or parents don't want them because of the potential covert issue or anything of that nature i understand it that is their right and i'm not objecting to that but i don't think they should have the ability if you know without their respective it's not safe for them to be in school during the day how is it going to be safe for them to be with their fellow students and coaches and such you know after school and the competitions and games and things of that nature so i understand i'm a minority so what else is new but uh i think in all seriousness that that's kind of been in the back of my mind since uh this has all started and uh i got it you know to keep them as part of the school system and everything else but if you know with all due respect they can't or will not attend our schools for whatever reason then i'm sorry but that's the consequences no i thank you mr nunes i i always appreciate your uh the firm ground you stand on kathleen oh i'm not muted no i was being smiling silently thinking i was muted um you usually have to mute in this house uh no i um uh i agree that each and every student should have the opportunity to participate in every aspect of the life of the school all of our students and while i can understand where mr nunes is coming from i think my thought is in presuming good intent in that those folks who really are extremely worried due to significant medical issues would self you know remove themselves from the sport for this year but uh i think that we should open it up to them knowing that we will be those events will be happening with proper you know social distancing and and the regulations as they stand to be as safe as possible for each student um but yeah absolutely i think that it is critical that all of our students are offered um and welcome to try out and participate in anything that we offer that has to do with the life of the school thank you uh mrs waite yes and not to you know extend i think a lot of the you know and again where some of our conversations need to be focused around sports but a lot of the clubs and it's my understanding they may start virtual too as well as newspapers and things like that so those are opportunities for those students to participate you know i think back to like big great news which you know i helped run in this you know the spring that would be an opportunity for the middle school kids who are on remote uh as well as you know i should say like who are we working from home the virtual as well as our remote than the hybrid students to all come together and be part of you know something like that so those are the things you know i think that you know some of those parents you know to john's point may well not you know feel comfortable doing sports but there are other avenues that they want to still feel part of our community so um you know but that is is is not just solely you know the athletics and the sports and the actual physical activities where they're getting together but they'll still be some of those online pieces as well great no thank you mrs wait uh would you prefer a formal vote dr gifford or is that good enough that's good enough okay thank you i just wanted once again um not anybody to be surprised at any decision we made and just want to let folks know so we can the planning can go and when parents have those questions we have the answer so that's fine thank you thank you all right uh next up under new business i'll turn it over to uh miss roy uh school committee policy e b c f a on face coverings thank you mr oliver i'm gonna start just explaining a little bit since it's our first policy of the year but um what we do as a subcommittee is we review the mass association of school committee policy model and then we kind of work from there so um on the face covering policy again i'm going to kind of go off a little bit and i'm going to read parts of this normally i just ask you to vote on this or you know take a first reading because i think it's important for folks to hear some of this so the policy was developed following the guidance for from the center for disease control and the department of elementary and secretary education guidances and the department of public health so the first paragraph actually the second paragraph starts by defining the face coverings as having to cover the nose and mouth and the of multiple layers then it goes on to talk about the exemptions to the policy under circumstances such as students with medical behavioral other challenges where who are unable to wear a mask and how this would be requiring a physician note for the exemption and principal approval not just a parent signing a waiver to say it's okay for my child to not wear a mask it talks about students providing families providing face coverings for the students obviously we'll have some on site if those are not if they're not able to have them or if they forget to bring them in and we're asking in that paragraph related to students bringing their own face masks that we strike out the second sentence related to staff members to better reflect what we are doing which is that we will have staff mask available for staff as needed so they can bring their own or we will have them available um and the final section goes on to talk about um any violations of the policy and it talks about you know certain components the principal or designee will consult with the parent or guardian to determine whether exemption is appropriate or the student may be removed from the school building for in-person learning until such time as they can comply with the requirement or the requirement is lifted so they would they would be removed to our remote learning component or virtual academy or in some cases techo or ingenuity so those are the main highlights it does finish that the policy will remain in place until rescinded by the school committee so i don't know if you have any questions but we are asking for a vote tonight if you feel comfortable with doing that as we were slated to begin school shortly great thank you very much for that um overview miss roy dr jenkins what's up i'm sorry john i'm in support of this i just have a question about um the written note exemption um i have some friends who are physicians and i have heard from them that parents are coming in um asking for mask exemptions um which they are not granting because there is no medical reason but i am concerned right that there will be perhaps some less scrupulous um physicians who are willing to do those things given how politicized this has been um and so my concern is if we only say if we say just a note that that requires us um to accept that and then what happens if we get you know what i mean if word gets out oh this doctor's writing notes go ahead you can get a note like we saw in medical marijuana right when it first became legal everyone all of a sudden had a disease that required it right um so i don't wonder whether we want to have like a written note from the physician along with approval from administration under the expectation that nearly all of these will be approved but just so that we have that capability if any issues arise around this so it does say they must be approved by the building principal or designee it does have that component in that first sentence of that paragraph um is that suitable dr jenkins yeah um that's fine i think so now that we've made that clear i can see it but i can see how a parent might say i have it but we can point back to that in order to be granted that yeah they have the note therefore the principal is required to approve it um but i think that's fine so long as we make clear that that's not a guarantee but that's the start when you bring in the note that initiates the process that we will then review excellent point mr nunes thank you mr chairman um one one quick question i have and i apologize mrs roy i should have brought this up early when you and i were we were all been the attacking over the past few days but uh in the first paragraph where it says uh gators and bandanas will not be allowed uh i'm going to make an assumption or does it need to be in there that like for after school activities and such you know sports and clubs and music that if masks are needed it has to be a mask and not the gator or the bandana the concern was the multiple layers and that the high high majority felt that the most of the gators and bandanas were single layers well we know that there are a few exceptions to that um the committee felt that um the majority of them were single layer and therefore not under the policy of multiple layers in the park so anyone participating you know in an after-school activity or such is going to need a regular mess yes if they're if they're you know obviously on school grounds or in our buildings or on school transportation any of that in that second paragraph right thank you perfect thank you mr nunes anyone else have any comments questions concerns over this policy uh back to you shannon can i just follow up on the the gate and gator and the bandana thing there's also been research showing that they are less effective right in preventing the spread of covid because like they're not tight on the bottom the right air flows out so i think because i don't want someone to come in and say oh well you know my gator has two layers so can i have this or my banana right there's a reason in addition to the number of layers why we're requiring face masks yeah all true no agreed thank you everyone uh for your input i promote we uh uh approve the policy ebfca on face coverings with the adjustment uh to the uh second sentence in the uh fourth paragraph that uh ms roy read district will have mask available for staff as needed which is what we do correct i think that's the fifth paragraph am i counting wrong nope you're correct all right i apologize it right i'll second that so i have a motion by mr nunes the second by dr jenkins on the motion any further discussion chair hearing none roll call please miss gunther chris oliver yes shannon jenkins yes kathleen amarillo yes mary wait yes john nunes yes may i confirm it's paragraph four and not paragraph five paragraph five i can't count thank you kate thank you everyone on that uh next up superintendent's update uh dr gifford the only thing i will add is we've still continued with negotiations as you know we'll be updating the committee tonight in executive session negotiations with dea about returning to school plan and mr kylie let us know that i think it was october 18th to 3 mr kylie for a flu clinic again uh high school correct the uh the board of health is putting that together they've asked us for um you know permission to use the high school on that sunday 12-3 on the 18th and we've granted that permission and i think they'll be publicizing it shortly and that's it okay great and uh next up report of the chair i do not have anything um other than uh we are confirmed uh for our uh next week with the joint meeting uh dr gifford yes perfect thank you very much anyone else for the good of the committee and community uh dr jenkins i just want to let everyone know that the def met um and i think the the consensus was that this year we were gonna be unable to do um our spelling bee um so we're we're making some plans to to maybe you know do a direct ask to help support to continue to support our teachers i think the needs are going to be more than ever um and we may try to do some event in the um spring so i just asked everyone to be on the uh the lookout uh for that right thank you shannon chris yes mr news yes uh you know if you happen to go by the high school stadium this weekend uh you are going to see uh the band uh percussion and color guard they're starting their virtual shows this weekend with us bands and such so you know friday afternoon saturday afternoon sunday afternoon i understand is everything's going to start kicking off so just be aware that's great now thank you for sharing that all right our next regularly scheduled meeting i don't have it in front of me does anyone have the date of the next regularly scheduled meeting of the dartmouth school committee october 5th thank you mr nunes is october 5th and safe to say at 6 30.

244 we're always doing patience uh communications there are three thank yous listed do you have any others there are there goes okay and tracy is going to pass those around i also had a thank you in the mail from uh monica sear also and then add a couple texts also okay um uh introduction to staff i'll go real quick we have crystal ecton here tonight she is our college and career advocate uh she's doing a wonderful job she has three boys so it's over in gridley uh we're pleased as heck right now to have her there uh donna's been out for a little bit so she's just trying to move right in and kind of help him uh calm the waters right now with uh what's going on and i truly appreciate all the effort and everything that she's done for the school at this point in time and uh well she acts like she's just been there forever already so it's really great to have that and uh do you have questions i told her she had a six [Music] observing students so that's awesome yeah my husband said oh my gosh i already saw her out development i was like well that's pretty awesome appreciate it great things thank you so we have two new staff members at the middle school this year right now valencia higgins she is filling in for a tesla home terms up for special education and i really think it is doing a phenomenal job um anything that you want to add he's doing a wonderful job so far very impressive how she's doing stacy mallory is teaching our computer applications class she is new many of you probably have seen her she was a substitute teacher within the district the last last year and um again just a great addition and doing a doing a great job matter of fact um she spends almost too much time in school and i say we got to take care of herself so um and she said she prepared a four-minute speech so if she wants to do that go ahead thank you so much for the opportunity the teacher really enjoyed the district last year i've heard great things about those also yeah i like her all three ladies all three ladies and a lot of our staff are spending a lot of extra time so we sure appreciate that and the time that you're spending getting to know the kids as well so thank you thank you guys did somebody just say good evening it is a good evening we also have a special guest one of our new staff members allison stewart uh our uh elementary counselor so she has recorded a message superintendent marshall and also principal long and everyone else i'm sorry i can't be there with you in person i appreciate the opportunity to make a video um my name is alison stewart i'm a new school counselor at burlington elementary and i'm having a great time and this is a great place to be thank you so much for having me um i was going to take up my math and make a video for you but i thought you know what it seems more appropriate right now to um to talk to you the way that i talk to the students so this is the way the students see me and hear me have a great evening and thank you again for this opportunity it's awesome yes i got a red enrollment yeah she's yeah i had wonderful conversations there i haven't been able to make it to the drop zone area because i've been doing some morning here so now i need to i need to get to know allison there so yeah the drop zone you just kick them out and go you gotta hug them we say drop drop off zone that's just i think they changed the name okay uh bes uh and darla is not here tonight i gave her permission to go attend uh her son's football game this evening and so she said if you have any questions let let me know and i will be happy to share them with her and we'll get you some answers if you have anything i don't have anything i guess something a middle school report i don't have anything to add um i just couldn't be more pleased with everybody's effort from staff to students parents from having a volleyball tournament and we read this little psa and everybody's very respectful wearing masks teachers are doing a great job you know getting kids up and getting them out and not just taking them out for a mass break but there are activities going on debris is flying around the world with the periodic table with kids and so they're not just doing mass breaks but they're getting out they're actually doing a little bit of learning with it but overall i couldn't i couldn't be more pleased with how and you've had a challenging week yesterday last week yeah it was i i don't know if it's beyond beyond but i think so i i want all staff to know we really appreciate that they're stepping up because i know everybody is having to pitch in so i'm sure when people walk in in the morning they may not know that they're going to be doing temperature checks or you may not be good so yeah i just appreciate flexibility and people making changes last out of curiosity how many of the tickets that you gave to the for the volleyball how full was the gym this weekend yeah this weekend was pretty full we did have some eighth grade boys that got tickets from a few girls and they did come but it was that was why i asked yeah my son was one of them but but that point was my point was if it was really full empty we should try to get the student body involved a little bit if we can that don't have family or whatever because that's the only way to get a different weekend was when we had when we started our first game and then we had two teams in we were grateful so there was room for it this weekend was pretty tough matter of fact the two students that came got up and moved down because they were getting closer to people you mean sage yes and i don't remember who came yeah bro [Music] but so is are you guys against them doing that finding a ticket from someone no okay because they really wanted to go support them and i said you got to find a ticket i don't know how to get you in there maybe there's something we can do for our student body otherwise i don't know what it is i talk to charlie a little bit if we if we do 20 28 20 29 that we give out and we just say okay at least 20 kids you get it and about 20 again something like that right because if we had it if we had everybody show up we could possibly have 300 people on the same right so we have to we have to still kind of you know do what we're doing and what we said we were going to do as a league participant so it's not just us that gets affected it's the lead but if you're thinking that like great i'm all for it good charlie and i talked about it good thanks appreciate it well he wanted to go watch any other questions no i score report guys i can't thank the staff not just teachers but the whole district staff for what they are doing right now it is a a big mountain to deal with every single day but they've done it like champs from the custodial staff secretarial staff the paris the teachers it's just a monumental task and i'm very proud to be part of what i'm having to deal with at this point in time i wouldn't want to deal with with any other group of people and i appreciate your guys support as well he has been tremendous we know there's going to be blinks in the road we talk about them every day and things that we need to look at because of just what you guys were talking about attendance in volleyball versus football and how you handle both and we're looking at all those things from one week we you know to the first time we've had something what can we fix how can we fix it what's some things that we could do different and uh you know people are people are going to be critical sometimes but you know we look at it and then we make a decision based upon that and i trust that i feel like you guys respect our decisions and understand that we are having to deal with things and i do think things truly like the rest of them do but uh nothing major uh for my employee report i i put some things on there you know we're trying to deal with things in the high school that we always just had it was just a we just did and now it's we have to think about it from the standpoint of clubs to how do we get these clubs i'm going to get people elected you know and we don't have as much time to do that right now and there's just a lot of a lot of things that we're looking at but the flow is pretty good i i think we're just absolutely working through that but uh i don't have any other comments it's you know i i wish i could say we're doing this this and this but some things have slowed down a little bit you know the amount of travel outside of schools with just different groups has been something that we're dealing with along with nobody going out and doing anything with you know the green bush things where teachers need they need to go here that we're trying to figure out how to do virtual things with them and that kind of stuff but we'll work through it i i got total confidence and everybody uh working through it and doing the best i can so holler if you guys have any questions you know i you know you can get a hold of me i think i've answered most everybody's calls pretty quickly so i have two things just to comment on uh i understood like float decorating you move you instead of canceling float decorating you have like 10 kids a night so i really appreciate that that's where dave is at right now yes and i'll be there later this week and we're just trying to do things to keep some normalcy in these kids lives because uh we know that they've lost a lot but what can we do to try to help get things to so that they don't feel like they've lost out on things you know there's going to be things that they can't do but we're looking at other ways around it to make it work and uh i guess that's the challenge for dave and i and everybody else doing these things is what can we do to make it as normal as possible we're going to try to have a parade that they're going to walk straight down here and they're just no nobody's going to stand out here we're going back to the stadium only people in the stadium will be the kids but we want that for those kids they're they're dying to want to be normal as much as possible with and they're doing a good job with the masks and things like that you know but uh we want to try i think it's important i think these kids believe is really important and then one thing i want to point out uh stacy told me the other night at the retreat that i think you know i honestly didn't think about it but when breakfast is suddenly for me at the high school a lot more kids eat breakfast and so the cooks all of a sudden you know i got it from 10 to 50.

we're the first birthday of the year so yeah yeah it's in the backyard let me know okay at this time at this time we'll come to order the new jersey of open public meetings law was enacted to ensure the right of the public to have advanced notice of and to attend the meetings of public bodies at which time any business affecting their interests is discussed and acted upon in accordance with the provisions of this act and board of education policy zero the board of education of the borough of bangkok has caused the notice of this meeting to be posted in the board office and at fountainbrook high school and mailed her fast to the courier news foundry clerk south bound board of education and any person who has requested individual notice and paid the required faith please stand for the pledge i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god she informed us that she was um out of conflict this evening thank you morris here she also she also has a contact i asked my son he's he's at school and how he said the first day was a little crazy and i'm sure the rain didn't help either but uh he did say the second and now the third day that he's back thinks you know he says he was able to get in so that's awesome i hope the rest of the schools have the same experience um thank you for coming thank you so thankful for the teachers because it's you know it's not an easy year um but they're there and doing what they need to do and so i greatly appreciate that um we are going to have to just arrange the meeting a little bit we're going to move the executive session up to the beginning because there's some things we need to discuss prior to the meeting um so we are going to be going into executive for number three material the disclosure which constitutes an unwarranted invasion of individual privacy number four a collective bargaining agreement and or negotiations related to it number seven pending or anticipated litigation or contract negotiations and or matters of attorney client privilege and number eight specific perspective or current employees unless all who could be adversely affected request an open session so can i get a motion to go into executive [Music] promotion easy [Music] thank you it's still good are there any committee reports with this 77 f7b uh the montana came in at a 78 out of 70 [Music] so i think the only areas where we were deficient were in areas of high school [Music] with that i just want to go over some open positions we currently have in the district um obviously we have uh some leave openings right now we have a lead position open for special ed language arts the high school we have a bilingual chemistry position open at the high school we have a e replacement position for students at the high school part coming to high school part-time at the middle school we have a lead replacement position binary that is unlocked yet um we have a esl position that's small that's a tangent track position and we still have a tenure track position for speculative all right so the education committee met did they meet this evening topics that we discussed uh we talked about just what homework would look like um during hybrid learning receiving input from teachers that the expectation was that it wouldn't be repetitive learning without meaning it would be more independent based that students could complete it on their own um mr smith had forwarded a survey desk that he had given to our survey that he had given to his teachers at the high school with feedback about percentages homework at the high school will be 10 of their grade um we talked about the new lgbtq curriculum which is now in um atlas our curriculum um storage and it will be made public um over the next week um there was just a lot of guidelines from the state on lgbtq curriculum so just making sure that we were in compliance with those guidelines the curriculum actually goes down to fifth and sixth grade um through 12th grade we talked about what the block would look like for after school remediation um that it could be for assessment for small group learning for example a guided reading i got a math um it could be times for teachers to have office hours and meet with individual students who are struggling or in need of assistance it could also be for gifted and talented enrichment opportunities um so we just talked about the parameters that we had shared with staff for that um i think that's it um just one quick thing on the agenda this evening item number 8.3 which is an mou with rutgers they have not given us back their signed copy of that so therefore for this evening 8.3 and that's the mou that's the memorandum of understanding between rutgers okay at this time i need to at this time at this time uh open to the public for anything that is on the agenda seeing none i need to get a motion to approve the no i gotta do online oh sorry all right we have two questions we have two questions from amma [Music] public school choice was school choice mostly for athletics no school choice had nothing to do about athletics it had to do with us having focused and a way to generate revenue for the district and as our district is continuing to grow and our high school population is growing it's time for us to consider phasing out of the school choice program all together to free up 37 seats that is it for online okay at this time we are open to the public no no one else wanted okay so i need the motion to approve the minutes of 8 24 2020.

during december break but we'll give more information on that later okay and we can discuss any of these things um later in our reopening school if you have questions the aspa ritual law conference was last um wednesday thursday turkey thursday friday and there are some of the topics that are that were included if you missed a session and you have more information this one is a binder that we're putting together that has the powerpoints so if you'd like to read up on any of what was presented at the law conference they're there good topics even for our team in terms of digital citizenship and social media and looking at title ix regulations so it was good information and i know some of you board members attended so you can share with us the discussion on something that you found interesting or that you learned updates and events so rotary we installed a peace poll at desert meadows park garden saturday so there's um you know miss laura peter she's part of our parent advisory and olivia is one of our students and um there we have charlotte gates our board president so that was a fun event and we also received an eight thousand dollar check for rotary grant on the continental outdoor musical park and fifteen hundred dollars for jazz in the desert so a big huge thank you to mr ferguson and available for a um picture today with the chicks before i turned him over to mr schubert so we are very grateful and know that we have a lot of rotary support um they're always thinking about us in terms of grants and what they can do to help us and they are going to be part of the breaking ground on the outdoor musical park and we're hoping to get it done by november so we could do an appreciation during thanksgiving for the royalties that helped us install and a little touch of humor this is featured from one of our second grade classrooms so treat your mask like underwear do not borrow or lend it do not share it make sure it's clean change it daily and make sure it fits snug but not too tight so i wasn't sure if this was going to be appropriate but mr nathan thought it was very appropriate [Music] so again as a reminder this is something they reminded us of during the law conference that when the superintendent does their report that it's not an opportunity for questions of discussion but if there are questions on any information that's presented or questions please let us know so we can make an agenda item at the next meeting or address at a later time thank you and we will keep calm and sail on and um board members are welcome to come help us out on thursday friday if you want to come by and see how it's going we will be in the parking lot taking temperatures and escorting kids to their kinder classrooms and we're trying to figure out how we usually do our title one meeting and our guru breakfast for our kinder parents so i believe they're planning to meet at a different location but is where us and i will do a google hangout for the kinder parents as well that morning so thank you that concludes my report thank you okay principal's report it is appropriate to ask questions of her because her presentation has been posted we've had a chance to review so you can ask any questions for clarification so i'm going to go ahead and start good evening everyone i would like to start with just talking to you about what we're doing with spotlighting our teachers and showcasing their instruction as a way as a form of what i'm referring to as a lesson studies and one of the things that we're doing is tying it to our evaluation instrument which is the dentist and evaluation which our teachers are evaluated on and for instance this month one of the domains that we're going over and showcasing is domain three instruction component 3a communicating with students so we've been spotlighting them on our weekly news their digital lessons where they're able to showcase highly effective attributes for teaching that align with the indicators of their evaluation instruments progress reports are due teachers are going to be posting everything so that parents will have availability to progress reports on parent view wednesday the 16th which is this wednesday we wanted to give you an update on nwea map which is our new instrument that we're using our new program that we're using to do benchmark testing quarterly benchmark testing it is a new program we used to use ati but right now what we're doing is we're training our teachers with this new program and they have to do some online trainings getting started while using map growth get students ready for map growth and get yourself ready to be a proctor and the deadline for them to complete these trainings is tomorrow is wednesday so then we'll have continuous conversations about that because it's a new program to all of us and we're really excited about it teachers that have already completed the trainings i've heard some really great things about it they're very excited to use this new testing instrument we've also been i'd like to share with you our lesson plan expectations as we go into this school year for our teachers when they post their lesson plans as they create their lesson plans what we would like to see is their learning standard and they'll be placing these either outside their doors so if we're doing walk-throughs we can look at their lesson plans before we walk in know what we're walking into what we're going to be observing and seeing we can offer feedback or have conversations with them or if they have questions or we're also going to be um where they'll have a place that they're going to designate in their classroom and they let us know where it's at but the lesson plans will have the learning standard on them it will have the learning objective so it's very clear as to the learning that is taking place essential questions that they're going to be posing to the students in regards to the standards and the objectives of the week's learning and a brief description for the lesson of the day and they'll also note in their lesson funds any formative assessments that will be taking place daily midweek or at the end of the week in addition to the lesson plans one thing that we really want to have in mind and i've spoken to many of the teachers is daily objectives board and the central questions board so if you were to walk through our classrooms from pre-k all the way through eighth grade you would see that that's aligned in all the classrooms as you walk in you would see what the daily objective is for the day what the teachers are teaching the essential questions that they're posing to the students and essential questions help the students to understand the relevancy of the standards that they're learning why why are they learning it many times when we're growing up we sit in a classroom and we think what's the point of this so it's important that they understand what they're learning and why the teachers responded to doing that we've had some discussions already with teachers they did it many years ago or a few years back some of them held on to it and some of them are really excited about getting it back in action because it was it was a great tool and an instrument or a daily resource for their students so it's something we're really excited to see because i know one of the things we talk a lot about as i walk through and speak with teachers is alignment throughout our school and that's something that we want to be cohesive as a team and be able to when you walk into classrooms as your children or the children grow up we're going to have common a common theme throughout our school and we're going to start here with our daily objectives boards our lesson plans format will look the same so the teacher evaluation process we've gone over teacher evaluations we did a part one session so we could go over what the probationary teachers expectations are and the continuing status so a probationary teacher is a certified teacher who has not been employed by our district for three years and the policy requires a minimum of two formal observations or evaluations annually if the probationary teacher exhibits unsatisfactory skills in more than three areas that are on the danielson evaluation rubric he or she must be placed on an improvement plan and an additional evaluation must take place in addition to the two continuing status is given to certified teachers who have been in the district longer than three years so it's their fourth consecutive teaching contract with the district after being employed by the district for more than a major portion of three consecutive years if the continuing status teacher exhibits on satisfactory skills in more than one area he or she must be placed on an improvement plan and an additional evaluation must take place so i just wanted to give you some insight into how we do our evaluations here teacher evaluation performance in an effort to create a comprehensive picture for teacher effectiveness the following is completed throughout the school year we have a pre-conference where our teachers will be going over their teacher self assessment it's a rubric that they fill out based on how they see where they're at and where they fall on the rubric and we discuss with them their evaluators the professional development plan and learning goals that they set for themselves for the school year then we have a pre-observation conference where the discussion of the lesson takes place the lesson that they will be observed and evaluated on and they will have the following documents turned in to us which is the danielson pre-observation planning document that they find on their frontline accounts which we use and then also the lesson plan template that they will provide us with their lessons so we can follow along while we're evaluating them we have the formal observations and then we end the year with the post observation conference also a post observation conference after each observation but the discussion of domains one and three rubric scores take place and domain four has to do with professional development so that happens at the end of the school year and they turn these documents to us and we discuss their post observations go over it give feedback and it's one of the things that i've told the teachers is i was a teacher it's it when the evaluation process happened it was more of a compliance but we don't want this to be a compliance it's a learning experience it's something that we're able to be able to help coach to help to discuss together and come up with really great plans and goals and able to it gives us the time to point out areas of strains and areas where growth and progression can take place and it gets exciting last year a lot of the conversations i had with the teachers that i was evaluating it it's already fed into this school year so because we're continuing they have really great goals that they want to reach and it's it's a great process i don't want them to just look at it as something we have to do it's something that's going to make our school even more richer for doing it so the domains when i speak about domains these are the domains and under each domain there's a number of components so domain one is planning and preparation domain two is creating classroom environment domain three is instruction and domain four is professional responsibilities what student data is included so part of the overall evaluation at the end of the year their composite score that they get the district before in the past has decided that it would either fall some districts to state testing scores from the year prior or it could be the district benchmark scores thank you so that is the data that is figured into the overall composite score when everything is entered in their evaluations um the rubric scores that they have and then we're going to be doing part two of the evaluation process with our teachers so we can really go over the frontline program that they use and it would be we would be going over teacher self assessment the pre and post observation document so they know exactly what they are if they have any questions domain for artifacts this is them holding on to lessons that they've taught student work uh parent letters that they send home projects that they've done and they can upload them to this frontline system or they can hold on to create a portfolio that at the end of the year when we conference together they show and we go over all of their work that they have completed and done and then we discuss that's at the summative review and then we go over the composite score for the year which is where we discuss then the composite score then places them in the overall of being effective and effective or so on andy and i just wanted to clarify just to let everybody know so charlotte danielson was the teacher researcher founder of the model of the evaluation system so when you see danielson that's what that means but fretline is the system the ten the company that promotes the danielson model so when you hear so a lot of times the teachers will refer to frontline you know it's their evaluation system that's when they log in and they can see the rubrics they can see their scores and any of the notes that we have taken of the evidence that we've gathered when we walk into a classroom and we evaluate and the teacher knows that we're evaluating we are taking down taking down evidence that falls under each of the domains and the components so that we can discuss that with them and they can discuss it with us too so now we're moving on to a place to go program i just wanted to update everyone we've been serving 41 students and the place to go program this is students needing a place to be at while school was being done digitally so we've been doing this since august 17th it's been a successful program thanks to our teachers mrs testo and this is mimbrella and all of our programmatic assistants mr lathan and everybody who's been taking part we've had some students transported here as well so thank you to our transportation department everyone who's helped in creating this to be successful we have students 15 of them who are half day 21 who were full day from 8 to 3 and then preschool which is pre-k the first five students in active students we initially had 36 inactive students who had been consistently inactive in their classes some that were not showing up at all some that were doing things sporadically so teachers did emails did calls and then we had a document that we were keeping track of and have been noting home visits have been made by us by teachers as well packets have been created for those students hot spots the khajiits for wi-fi have been delivered to students some parents have even come and brought them pick them up here when they told us this is the issues that we're having so some students have improved with their work and performance teachers as well as us are administrating our monitoring and doing check-ins with our students and families and grades will be reflecting their lack of participation and missing work and teachers have been continuing those conversations with our students and families as well as us going into highlights we did a continental back to school drive-through parade as a staff we have library guest readers that our librarian mrs lathan has been has been showcasing the students all have access to this library and to this classroom into reading viewing all of our guest readers and getting to hear great stories and there's miss nurse maureen for i think it was national pets day she dressed like a puppy so she could do some recordings of reading to the students and then we have music class which has been going phenomenal it's been great for all of our students to be able to have access to continuing continuous music instruction as well as physical education mrs tesso has put out a video and she's collecting daily exercise minutes from students and promoting fitness daily our school counselor and her intern mrs scott have been sharing counseling videos have set up a cult chat for students to be able to speak to them if they have any social emotional needs for our students during this time they've been very supportive and they also have a google classroom that students have continuous access to at any time that they need we're also still promoting our continental website so any parents who are on the phone or who are watching live please make sure if you have not done so already to visit our continental website at www.continentalesd.org it's important to continuously visit that website because that's where we have most up-to-date information and every week on our our continental news to our staff we are showcasing a teacher's web page that they have and teachers are still working on their web pages and we're excited for the return of our colts and our families we've missed our students and families it's been very long and we're ready to have them back so are there any questions and the final thing that i would like to do is we have some very generous donors that i would like to thank we have ken and carol radmer we want to thank them for a donation of computer monitors and keyboards and robert mori moreland i think we'd like to thank him for a donation of a trumpet to our school thank you any questions okay our consent agenda in a second any discussion um i i just have a question if the finance report can go up there i just want to make sure i understand understand this if i'm reading this correctly the receipts expense is obviously what we've spent the encumbrant amount is what we're required to spend or what's in teacher salaries and yet yet to be yet to be spent but but committed is that correct so it well it depends on what you which which which section of the report that you're talking about there's a couple different sections there's the the cash portion and then there's the expenditure portion so like the example that's on the screen direct currently right now the fund 0103 that's cash that we actually have on deposit at the county treasurer's office 1990 is miscellaneous revenue that we've received in 3120 additional state aid members that we have received going down beneath that the 6100s and everything else that is all expenditures okay so i'm not 100 sure what the question is is this a fiscal year-to-date report this was as of i believe i sent this to you on the ninth it says this is at the september 9th 2020.

all right we're back into open session will everyone stand for the pledge i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible hearing time can i please have a motion to enter the budget meeting for the 2020-2021 budget exactly joe and tiffany yes yes yes yes yes all right in the uh hearing i've got a couple documents i want you to look at as we prepare the first one is exhibit one is the expenditure history so i'd like to show you this one each year you can go back to 2011-12 and just kind of see our pattern just i know i remind you this each year but just remember the last the 2020-21 numbers are a bit inflated because we budget a certain amount with hopes of spending uh in the 92 to 94 is what i'm hoping i'd love this year i'd like to go lower if we can um but you can see all the the 1920 numbers are are fairly accurate we still have an audit we're finishing up but they'll be really close to that so you can see how our expenditures and revenue have take gone over time in all those funds the uh i put in the one note i put on this one is number the note number three says the o m revenue for last year does not include the land sale because if i threw it in there it would five years from now when you're looking at this you might forget why do we have so much money that year i just want to make that note in there so that i'm sorry that money is going to be going to be in o m it is an o m yes i just wanted to show you this is cash yeah okay yeah it's it's in the o m right now we can move it whenever it's just sitting there in our in our bank it's actually all in one big fund and then uh in our books it's showing up in o m but we can move it to working cash we can we can move it to transportation education or working cash we wanted to the exhibit 2 is end of year fund balance report again go back to 2011 and you can follow each fund down and just see what the balance has been and again the 2021 the 2021 numbers are gonna are going to look bad on paper right now by the end of the year we hope to show you a different number you can see last year the 2020 line there fairly steady across the board no no nothing that should have been it should be alarming for uh based on what we budgeted for last year so in here you can tell that the two million dollars is in yes and here that the yeah you can see where the o m balance went up to 3.3 that so that two million is in there um so with our so our budget this year you can see if you look at the the last two numbers of each column the 2020 and 2021 numbers you'll see the uh the budgeted deficit or revenue in each one i would i would tell you that in the education fund we're going to be when i look at the the budget itself which i tell you what it'll be easier for me to do this if i look if we turn to exhibit 3 exhibit three and it would be the uh the second page of exhibit three so there should be you should see a spreadsheet there and line 22 of that spreadsheet if you follow line 22 across it lists each each fund and if it's in red it's projecting a deficit in that fund um i'm not concerned about o m it's projecting a deficit of 115 000.

okay [Music] paul good evening call to order nancy kupko here mike davenport here shirelle fuller here dan nicholas here trey pavich here rick pavonato here joanna vazquez drexler here thank you thank you maybe let's stand for the pledge i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all well this is a very pleasant evening because we're going to start with a student perspective we haven't had one for a while no thank you guys for coming all right so we have some representatives of north high here so if you guys could just introduce yourself and then share with the board your story that you're here to share can you hear me yes uh hi my name is emmett thulin i'm a senior at north and some things we were just going to talk about a few like shortfalls and some good things that are going on and one of the main things is that i think the teachers have been super accommodating through all of this whether that just be in class like a video or something doesn't work and just electronically it's not making sense they'll change their lesson plan around that and make do with it and then a lot of my teachers because 80 minutes an 80 minute period is something that we're not really all that used to they're accommodating for us and making like a little short like three minute go up use the bathroom go get a glass of water like a little something to eat like that and so i think that's just been really a positive thing that they're doing and then also i'm involved in the speech team at north and we just had our first all-team meeting today and um we got our head coach on the um i think like the dgn zoom account and so we've been able to use those meetings efficiently and well and i think that's something that activities like speech that can be fully online i think that's really positive that we're getting those going and moving and then just a few things that i think like might need a little work is that some teachers have been assigning work outside of class that's like additional lectures and i feel like some teachers aren't using their complete 80 minutes to the maximum capacity that it can be used for and so that's all that i have unless you have any questions for me all right let's keep going around and we'll then just and maybe some questions will come out hello okay great sound good um emma took some of my points so i'm just going to reiterate some of the stuff you said as well uh hello my name is george photos i'm a junior at dioscope north and i have been asked to give my opinions on the benefits and consequences of remote learning there are some things that i have liked and appreciated about remote learning and i love the way that the districts set up our schedules i feel like it gave us enough time to focus on that class at hand and then give us enough time to reset for our next class also i get more sleep and i think that's great i don't know about you guys but the way my schedule is set up um so my classes i don't have like a second period or a first period and i get to sleep in and get more rest which is great and like emma said i really appreciate what my teachers have done they've been super understanding like they understand everything with everything going on and they've been there for me whether it be after class or via email some things that i think found more challenging remote is that we're not face-to-face obviously with my classmates and my teachers doesn't really allow me to build that student-teacher relationship and even a student-student relationship there are some students in most of my classes that i don't even know and i just like to get to know them in some way another challenge for me is that it's difficult to stare at a screen for a long period of time i lose interest very quickly because of the no interaction with my my teachers and my fellow students as i said i'm a junior and junior year is usually a huge academic year because this is the year that colleges look at for grades additionally i feel like i'm kind of missing out on some class experiences such as labs and science classes or just different leadership opportunities in other classes which i feel like i can benefit from well i'm not done sorry currently at north i am a part of the positively north stars program which helps incoming freshmen transition from middle school to high school i have a younger brother nico who is a freshman and he has benefited greatly from this program i feel the way that mrs lichtman and mr leslie have done this was amazing he now knows that he's got more upperclassmen outlets to ask for help just besides me i'm also involved in the pe trainee course at north being remote has made that class very difficult because it is student-led and the whole purpose of that class is to provide in-person instruction giving students the experience it will lead their peers for the rain of this semester i feel that even the next semester as well i kind of want to go back to school i want to be in person uh whatever it would look like either hybrid or full-time but i want to go back once it's safe to return and stay and i feel like stay is a big point with that uh i don't really want to go back on like a trial basis and then get some back home to remote uh because i feel like that would just kind of be just as upsetting as getting school taken away in the first place um thank you for giving me the opportunity hello okay hi my name is veronica latocha and i am a freshman at north high school i would first like to thank all the teachers staff and board of education members for all the hard work you have put in to make this year the best that it can be i am truly grateful for all you have done for north high students especially freshmen to help us transition into this new learning experience today i wanted to talk about some of the things that are going well during during remote learning and some of the things that are not so i'm going to start with the things i do like overall i think that it is less stressful to do school online than in person we only have half of our classes each day and that helps us with the amount of work that we have it's also nice that i get to do work from home i get to be in a place where i know i can do quality work and also stay focused i have the chance to be comfortable while doing schoolwork which makes it a little less stressful there are also some things that i do find challenging the first is that students have a lot more responsibility on themselves we have to make sure that all of our assignments are turned in on time and in the right spot and if there's something wrong you have to contact your teacher in your own time i think that the biggest disadvantage when doing remote learning is not being able to be with people and socialize i think it is very important to be with your friends and other people so you can make new friends and make those in-person connections i also think that doing online learning is not the best for students mental health not only are we experiencing a pandemic but now we have to stare at our screens listening to our teacher talk all day and this is in addition to already being on our phones for most of the time one thing that i think has been the hardest for the freshman class is definitely making new friends we are all new to the school we don't know a lot of people and we cannot make those connections over a zoom call so in most classes we are sitting with strangers and are expected to make conversations even though we've never met or talked to these people in our life most of the time nobody talks when we're in our breakout rooms because again we don't know each other and it's a little awkward to talk to someone over a computer screen i'm hoping that we can go back to school using the hybrid plan this will give us a chance to make those in-person connections with students and teachers and also get better understanding in our classes as much as i love waking up and just opening my computer to get to class i think it would be most beneficial to go back to school even if it's just for a couple of days a week thank you any questions about difficulties because being engaged and staying engaged and i get like you said you know like having some frequent little breaks to grab a snack or grab some water or whatever has helped are there any other things you think that would be helpful to get students engaged especially freshman students while you know honoring social distances um i think that overall like i can stay engaged for a good amount of time but i think that those five-minute 10-minute breaks that our teachers give us are always helpful just because we can go away from our screens and just not like walk around or something just so that we can get kind of moving and just not sitting for a long period of time but overall i think that's really it and with that i think that um some of my teachers have been if they like make it more towards the middle of class whereas some teachers will put it like within the last 10 minutes which is kind of just like not very good as serving for a break and so if it's more structured towards where the students have to break in the middle i think that would prioritize just them being able to then focus for the first half and then come back and be re-energized for the second yeah i agree with what emma said they both pretty much summed up my answer as well and if you guys have any problems with connectivity and staying on zoom or just even getting on the sites et cetera yes yes like infrequently frequently it's mostly difficult especially in pe classes um when i grow up i want to be a pe teacher and the way that my pe class currently is structured is great but it's very difficult because our class is like student-led and if a student can't lead the class because of their connectivity issues the class doesn't really there's really no class um but it's every once in a while and then oh sorry and then just um with the connectivity part of it i some of like i've been in and out or just like technology doesn't work like i got a loaner chromebook because like my chromebook wasn't charging and then this chromebook doesn't have like audio hooked up through it so then it i have to call in from my phone and so i feel like it's just a lot of like the little issues or like your wi-fi's out or things like that but then i think teachers are also being good with it and they're like students are reaching out and there's a good line of communication open between everybody with it are you able to talk to your own sergeants it's okay i haven't really been having a lot of problems if something sometimes like you can't really hear the teacher just because it starts glitching and it's kind of hard to communicate just because you could have missed like an important part of what we're doing are you able to talk to your teachers when you need to like what outside of class are you able to reach people and say hey i miss this or i need help with that yeah i usually just email my teachers um let them know what happened and it usually gets clarified yeah we've uh we've sorry we've been using remind which is a great app um it's like it's more like a texting for lack of better words um instead of because some people are just only using emails so that's another way that we've been communicating with our teachers yeah i just had a question about the pe class you said the student led is the student here doing it or are they trying to lead it from home is that what you said to me yeah can you repeat the question i couldn't hear the pe question you said it was yeah it's working yeah so it's well i'm going to train e-course so our work we're uh leading via zoom so we're at our homes and uh like we like make a workout and we have to like perform the workout for the class and the classes like it's kind of like a repeating type thing so it's led from the students home and not at the correct yes okay that probably is the idea because it's the course is that the student is actually the leader of the pe class so they help design and lead that classroom experience for the rest of the students so uh yeah they're remote just like all yeah so they couldn't come in and use the school facilities because they'd be by themselves to lead that class yeah well when we had no students coming in until soon uh into the school during the day yeah i know but i was just wondering because that would be just one or two people so social distances would definitely apply because there's not a ton of students just asking i was just thinking about how that's being administered from a home space so yeah it's still all the challenges of transporting students absolutely any other questions so i'm uh so i heard uh i heard at least one of you say something to the fact that uh that you're getting more you feel like you're getting more work assigned to you um and that that was actually something i'm looking forward to hearing more feedback about i i was recently having a conversation with a high school friend of mine who's been a teacher he's a ap gov and instant teacher um in michigan and uh he we were talking about this and and something he was concerned about was as as they're doing remote is is that that temptation on the part of the teachers to take advantage of of possibly um you know the opportunity to have the students do more um outside of the actual class time and in difficulty in engaging exactly how much they should be or shouldn't be doing and i i kind of saw this first probably month or two of sort of a almost a conversation potentially back and forth between students and and their teachers trying to find that balance because this is new to everybody and but it is is something i think we need to maybe stay on top of um to make sure that that the balance is right that we're not seeing too much busy work um outside of outside of the classroom and i i i hate to categorize it as busy work but i lack of uh another term coming in coming to mind but the idea is just that um that you're not getting overly stressed and uh but it sounds like i heard comments about things being a little less stressful with all this i'm hearing you're more rested than you might have been otherwise and that's always been a concern of ours too that i mean idea kids coming in zero hour and staying after school and going home and getting all those uh all that all that homework done and then getting getting a few hours of sleep and getting up and doing it again so that seems to be um a positive there and we joanne and i were having a little conversation on the way in about trying to focus on on the things that we can do the things that are are positive versus uh what we're missing out on and and the negatives and so there's certainly some things about this that are that are if not different maybe even a little better than than the way we're doing things and hopefully we can expand about upon that and learn from it well i was going to just say you know i the thing that i don't have a question but i did observe that you were also positive and um so adaptable and taking on the challenge i believe one of you said you had to do take more responsibility for some of the things and i think you'll grow more because of that in the end and but i'm very impressed i'm hoping all the other students too are that you represent the way many of them are because i i think you're handling the challenge of this very very well i agree all right well thank you for coming out and presenting yes thank you very much we appreciate it now you're welcome to stick around and sit through a board meeting you're welcome to head on home either one run away as fast as you can i wouldn't do it no no guys we're gonna hear all about interesting stuff today actually a lot of their minds are going to be answered you're going to want to go home and tune in let's not get carried away okay so we're going to go with the um okay the workshop the first item is the school plan update empty all right [Music] i'm glad i can see that because do you want to do you want to take places with me no i'll be fine all right so uh we it's been uh three weeks three or four weeks since we've been together for a board meeting to uh discuss where we're at and returning to school just going through here a lot of material to share with you tonight tonight's really going to be focused on guidelines metrics and the things that we need to respond to in trying to get students back in person and then next monday will be hopefully uh we're working very diligently on coming up with concrete plans we'd like to have some of those to you for next week and then i'll walk through the timeline from there all right as you're well aware this summer was busy with lots of guidelines feedback and planning we've seen this before but this is every key date that led up to the august 17th first day of school but what i really want to point out is this is the timeline of changes since school started okay so we were supposed to be back on the 17th on that day four key pieces of guidance were released a quick reminder that just in the few days before that we received two major pieces of guidance that really caused us to not return on the 17th for in person and move to a remote model it wasn't until the week after that that we began the fully remote schedule that our students were speaking about today um so it's really been a only a few weeks that we've been operating under the newly the new fully remote schedule since then you can see many things including guidance that gets released and then updated on the same set of guidance so that's particularly frustrating for us because we'll get a piece of guidance and we'll start responding to it and planning for it and just when we think we understand it and we have answers ready to go then the rules of the game change again and we're back maybe not at square one but we're back having to adapt and change those things so being a lot of people are referring to this is the hamster wheel and that's kind of what it feels like uh as we've been working through this some of the major things that we'll talk about that are on this list the continuum of risk is greatly uh influencing our return to school that's from the cdc as well as the limiting and mixing of groups and cohorting the dashboards that have been released both at the state level and at the county level and then the exclusionary charts which indicate when it is that somebody should stay home or should be isolated or quarantined those started out very restrictive the week before school started and have been relaxed a little bit in the last couple of weeks especially related to reoccurring symptoms if you remember the last time we met we talked about how restrictive things like seasonal allergies would be and some of those limitations have been relaxed in the last week so that might make it easier for us to once we get people back to school keep them here and we were informed today that the cdc is issuing new guidance for schools to model so it will continue to come all right this slide continues to adapt and change but yes we are still continuing vigorously to try to return students to in-person learning i mean you heard it from our students tonight they want to be back here but we have to do it in a way where we're sure that it's safe and it fits inside of the guidelines that we have been told will keep students and staff and our wider community safe these are all the reasons that you've seen and they they remain what we hear is that remote learning is going well for most the stories that you heard from our students tonight are similar to the emails that are coming in there's a few bumps and glitches here and obviously we're very reliant on technology and it working we've had a few nationwide outages of zoom and of google and amazon web services which a lot of the tools are built on those are things that are out of our control we also have students that have some challenges with internet in in their homes that we have been actively working on heard tonight of a challenge with a chromebook i mean we're responding to those things we're trying to close those gaps we are working very closely with um a variety of internet providers we're working with dupage county and the dubai county regional office of education on getting internet service into into students homes we're working with the education foundation to purchase internet equipment for families that can't afford it so we are gina has been amazing working with the rest of the team in the organization to try to make sure that students have long term fixes for internet and technology issues because we fully anticipate that at some point in the year we'll needing to return to a longer period of remote once flu season comes in which we've talked about since the beginning so the team is focused on long-term fixes for our students not necessarily short-term fixes you heard some of the voices of our students tonight we're continuing to listen i receive probably half a dozen emails a day at least probably more than that on average we're monitoring monitoring social media and all of the normal networks that we follow our principals are meeting with students and staff and parents as well and constantly gathering information as to how it's going our feedback committee that the board asked us to form this summer is up and running and they're working on creating student family and staff surveys and we expect those to go out very soon we're working with a third party company that specializes in gathering this kind of feedback for schools so it will be faster for us to analyze and process that information and respond to it just getting it up and going for the first round is always the hardest part and it always takes us a little bit longer for student surveys because we have to allow families to opt out of those kinds of surveys so it takes a little bit longer to get wide scale mass student surveys up and running we have lots of opinions suggestions ideas coming in and and we read and respond to all of those we can't always give people the answers they want but we always try to explain why we're doing what we're doing and you know why we're responding the way we are there are a lot of strong feelings in all different directions on this and you can see some of those up there you know from wanting to be fully remote for the rest of the year to wanting to reopen tomorrow you know and you can see more synchronous less synchronous you know you heard some of the examples here today some feel like we should never reopen until there's a cure some think that we should reopen right away and that that this is not as big of a deal as it's made out to be i mean we're hearing stuff on all sides of it and we're listening to it and considering it and responsing responding to it one of the opinions that has been growing in its voice is that we should just ignore state guidance and state officials so one of the things that i've done in response to that consideration is reach out to the district legal counsel and just a reminder that legal counsel represents the district and the board they don't represent the administration and what they have provided is a memo that i've provided to the board but the closing summary of that memo is that the district is required to follow the governor's executive orders and should also abide by the joint guidance from isb and idph to have the greatest chance of avoiding liability for legal actions related to its response to the covet 19 pandemic now inside of that is obviously that our number one priority isn't avoiding liability it's about keeping students safe and as i've said many times before i have to trust that the health professionals in our state and in our county are interested in doing just that keeping our students our staff and our greater community safe and we have to design believe that that's what these guidelines are issued to do and i know that return to school and covid and safety guidelines and all of this is wrapped up in the larger political discourse however i have to look at this and assume that the measures we are taking are going to keep people healthy and safe and it is my first responsibility to do that my second responsibility as the superintendent is to protect the resources of this community and of the taxpayers within this community and to blatantly disregard guidelines and guidance and mandates from the state level that be the governor idph is the dupage county health department any of those organizations would greatly put the district at risk of lawsuits and whether or not those would win or lose those kinds of things take away district resources very quickly both in the form of administrative time and the time of the board of education and of our legal counsel and all of those leading the district but also in the resource of money those can get very expensive very quickly so my responsibility is to protect the students and of course the staff but also to protect district resources and i can only do that if we follow these guidelines and i know some people don't agree with them but that's not my option my my responsibility as the superintendent of schools here is to to carefully understand that guidance and then implement it with [Music] fidelity so i just want to iterate that we we understand a lot of these things that we're hearing a lot of frustration and frustration of the uncertainty people just want to know when and how and and how it's going to look and you heard from our students and if we come back we want to know that we're there and we don't want to flip flop back and forth we know that switching between these plans evolves a lot of capacity and energy i i was talking with nancy about this and in a lot of ways this is just redesigning school it's like picking up a city and relocating the whole city somewhere else and and there's a lot of complexity in this and every time you answer one question there's a a million more questions that come out of it and um you know this we know that the planning also impacts so many individuals right and it's different for each student it's different for each family and how we work through that is very complex and we we understand that that people just want to know what's going to happen so they can plan for it and they know what's coming next and is in and as we have all summer as soon as we know definitively what we're going to do we share it as widely as we can but we also know that each one of these scenarios is going to get intense feedback in scrutiny and that's fair i mean it's fair for the community to ask a lot of questions and seek to understand why we're doing things the way we're doing but but no you know that we're hard at work at doing this and we're also trying to run school at the same time if we would have been provided the guidance that we've received since the beginning of the school year back when we started this process at the beginning of july our plans would look much different today than they did when we presented them in august you know we would have built things much differently we'd probably be back to school right now but the fact is continued shifting and guidance and metrics and understanding of how this is all going to work makes it really difficult to plan for um and and we are on that hamster wheel of trying to get back but it just keeps churning and we're running school right now you know this would have been one thing in the summer when we had time to plan and staff and students weren't here but the administrative jobs that we hold are full-time jobs any other year and we're doing those same jobs right now and teachers are doing those same jobs right now and more because they're having a plan for completely different things than they've ever had to do before while we're trying to rebuild school and rethink school this is a monumental task to try to do all of this right now and we have to understand that just flipping the switch and saying we have a model and it works doesn't factor in all of the other things that go along with it some that we'll talk about later you alluded to you alluded alluded to it in the timeline but the science is changing all the time correct and the guidance is changing all the time and that's just a whole nother layer and it's not anybody's fault it's just that this is an evolving situation and there's a whole nother layer of complexity on top of all these other layers of complexities you can have the best plan and changes tomorrow because later on we'll try to show how we're trying to build so that even if numbers and metrics and guidance changes that we'll have a program that will likely work up to a certain threshold of transmission of kovit in our community we know there's no perfect solutions we know that no matter what we do [Music] somebody is going to be left out somebody's going to be unhappy we're doing our best to plan for the most that we can we we also hope that everybody understands that every individual is different how they respond to this is uniquely their experience and it doesn't make what's going on right now right or wrong their feelings right or wrong just what's right for somebody right now is very different than what's right for somebody else and we're trying to consider those individual needs and considerations into all the planning we're doing but it is challenging all right so what i want to spend a good chunk of time on tonight is making sure that the board in the community understands the changes that have occurred in health guidance since this summer so over the last month there's been a great deal that has come forward and this is what's really shaping our return to school planning to make sure that it fits within the health guidelines i've provided a summary document that i've shared with the board and we'll make sure that this is up on our website this is our internal and i'm going to put this in a format here where you can read it right but i just want to give you the big overall picture of what we've done here administratively is we've spent many hours with health officials to try to understand how the overlapping guidance of the illinois department of public health the dupage county health department and the cdc work together to help influence our decision making so that we know that whatever plans we're putting forward are safe for our student staff and greater community so what we've done is created this cross walk to show how the different pieces factor together the first piece of guidance that came out that our board was asking for for over two months before it came from illinois department of public health and i advocated with our state senator and isb to try to get this out sooner than we did got it are these different transmission levels that use metrics to determine what level of transmission community transmission we are in with colvin what it looks at is what's called a constellation method looks at a variety of factors and brings them together to indicate are we in minimal transmission moderate or substantial for the layman this is important because the greater the rate of transmission in the community the less likely your safety measures are to be effective so we need to integrate pieces that are less risky and this is what the health professionals have helped me understand it's all about risk management right and as transmission is greater in your community you can take less risk as transmission is more minimal in your community you can take more risks so we're trying to divide to devise programming that doesn't require a lot of changes based on where we're at in those transmission levels so where are we at right now i think i skipped a slide there we go [Music] all right yeah let's go back go to where we are right now there we go okay so these metrics are released every monday so these came out at 10 a.m today this is dupage county health departments metrics there's really six different metrics here all that it takes is for one of them to be in the next restrictive level and that's where we're at so one metric in moderate puts us in moderate one metric and substantial puts us in substantial where this gets complex is that the first metric in itself is a constellation metric okay so the first metric is where do we sit as a county either in the blue or orange orange is the warning level as defined by the illinois department of public health so what risk metric color are we in uh are we in blue or are we in orange and in the past week we moved from blue to orange that alone that one factor in moderate would be enough for us to be in moderate okay but we're also in moderate for the next one which is cases for 100 000 which is currently sitting at 89 that is a moderate factor then the next one looks a weekly case trend are we trending up or down in all of our cases this past week we went from trending down by 21 to trending up uh by 15 okay uh youth trend looks at cases under the age of 20 and how are we trending on that we went from trending down by 34 last week to trending up by 43 percent this year this week uh those two last two metrics need to be trending for two consecutive weeks for them to kick in that's why you don't see uh rating for those because we haven't hit criteria for two consecutive weeks but it's trending in the wrong direction for both of those weekly test positive positivity the threshold for moderate is five percent we were above that last week we were below that this week so that one is trending in the correct direction and then the last one is neighboring counties in orange uh once in the last four weeks we only have only have had one neighboring county at a time once you move to two neighboring counties in the orange now that moves to moderate so we've been alternating between kane and will going back and forth but we haven't had both at the same time so that has left us in the minimal not the moderate that one is the most lengthy metric because once you're there it takes four straight weeks of being of not having those two there for you to move back to minimal okay it is very easy to move to the more restrictive level that could happen immediately on a weekly basis if we ended up next monday at 101 per 100 000 cases the second metric we would be in substantial you're immediately in that level and you need to be for two consecutive weeks out of that level to move out so if we move to substantial next week it's then two more weeks of good numbers they were they're all in moderate to get into moderate or that they're all in minimal to get to minimum so it's much harder to move backwards than it is to move they're more restricted it's two weeks at or below the established threshold correct okay two weeks at or below the established threshold to move into a less restrictive transmission level so this demonstrates how important our wider community is to making sure that we get back to school and once we're at school that we stay there and i'll show you the impact on school in a second but i just want to make sure that everybody understands kind of how these levels work and how we move in and out of them so so to be clear dupage has defined a two-week period as being as establishing a trend but when you're talking about something trending up or trending down even if something's trending down if it's not yet or below the threshold level so if we're 89 i thought we were 93 but if we're at 89 now and next week we're at 88 the week after that 87 were well let's say even more so but we're trending down but we're still not edible threshold so we're still considering right yeah we're and that wouldn't be on this metric be considered trending down you'd be trending down if you move to the next metric so you'd have to drop it here all right um so once again this is nothing that we as a district are setting right these are metrics that are being set by the health professionals these are this is data that's being gathered by idph and we are just monitoring it and using it to influence the decisions that we make going forward so how this impacts our instruction these are recommendations from the dupage county health department and really as you look through these the hybrid schedules we designed it over the summer would only work within the minimal level of transmission the key challenge for this is once we're into moderate what the health professionals really start getting concerned about is the number of people you come in contact with on a daily basis so we as an administrative team have been looking at it as kind of your individual cohorts how many unique people are you coming in contact with throughout your school day and at minimal we're not so worried about that because the ppe the social distancing the hand washing all of the other measures that we have put in place keep you and keep you safe because it's unlikely even though you're coming in contact with more people less of them are likely to have covet but as we move into moderate it's more likely that you're going to come in contact with somebody that has been exposed to covid so we need to reduce the number of times that your ppe has to put up a fight against somebody breaking through those defenses so we need to start limiting the number of people that you come in contact with at school on a daily basis and when we move into substantial we need to almost completely eliminate that risk so you can see some of the basic things that we're thinking about to move to bring student all students back on a regular basis in the moderate transmission level which is where we are now and will at least be here for three more weeks is the development the need to develop a new schedule that meets some of these safety guidelines which i'll show you how we do that in a second yep and we talked a little bit about this before so just to be clear so when we're changing trains so when we're going to change levels between minimum moderate and substantial if we become more restricted that's intermediate correct your numbers spiked we're going to be more restricted we're going to become less restrictive it's going to take a period of time to find as two two weeks but in essence it's really three weeks because we have some time to operationalize so if i was a teacher if i was teaching a math class and i found out this week oh our numbers are starting to look pretty good i would then know that potentially in no fewer than three weeks we would be moving we could be moving to a different type of schedule but i would have at least three weeks to think about how i was going to do this and plan right and this is important for students it's important for families that are managing their family schedules and who's watching out for kids and who's making dinner and all of those kinds of things right so um however the other direction could be immediate right it can become more restrictive immediate so i know that that can be challenging for families as well right so this is why it'll be important to communicate on a regular basis what direction is the data trending in right and right now it is not trending in the right direction and i am very concerned about how the labor day data that will influence the data this week will impact us for our next round of updates a week from now so hank at what point i don't see it up here does the data point to back to school next coming soon i'll get there so what we need to try to do obviously substantial transmission they're saying it's pretty much a remote schedule what they're looking for us to do is to bring in just very small groups of students at that point and really most students almost all students are remote what we need to try to do is to build a plan that works in moderate and minimal because that is most likely where we are going to spend the majority of our time for the remainder of the school year our challenge is the plan that we built this summer doesn't work there in moderate it only works in minimal and as i've said many times already even tonight had we had this data in june or july we would have a plan right now for students to be back in person that worked in moderate and minimal however we didn't have the luxury of having that information so the last thing i want to bring to your attention is the cdc recommendations and what the cdc recommendations these came out on august 24th do a nice job of talking about is this continuum of risk and matching up you know the lowest risk which is what you want to have when spread is substantial to the highest risk which is a risk you can take when uh community spread is minimal and especially lower minimum right each one of each one of these transmission levels you could think are you trending more on the less restrictive side or more towards the more restrictive side so that's how all of these things then piece together to give us what to do now our key dividing line is between some risk and medium risk because we expect that we're going to live in moderate most of the year and that's where moderate sits low moderate sits in medium risk high moderate sits in some risk and the difference between the sum and the medium risk is the mixing of groups right so when you're in some risk they want you to try to start cutting out the amount of times in which students are mixing throughout the day right they want to keep that your individual cohort the number of students you come in contact with small and as we move the other direction as we move to the left the first thing we get to into medium risk is the ability to start some mixing of groups so at the high school level the way the curriculum works we're not like in elementary school elementary schools can do some risk pretty easily right it's the same teacher with the same group of kids for the whole school day you know you might push in some specials you might have a lunch period but you could keep those kids together in their own unique group for the whole day that's not how high school is built so we need to bring students back and we need some mixing to be able to run a school day we've looked at some like one period per day models and it's just not worth the lift to bring students in for just one period the disruption on all the other periods is so great that it it's not worth the trade-off okay so we need to have at least a schedule that allows some mixing of students throughout the school day all right so what the dupage county health department has released is a return to school framework to provide us some local guidance about how these metrics work and they've worked very closely with the regional office of education and all of the local superintendents to try to help us understand how this tool works and what it does is it gives us a pathway to in-person instruction that will be safe for students and when we factor all of these things together what you come up with this is this handy-dandy diagram that i have tried to put together to piece together everything that we know across all of the stuff i just shared you shared with you really as i said the dividing line in phase four that's where we're at for the state levels state phase is phase 4 we have kind of these six degrees inside of phase four that range from low minimal so you would be in that those transmission levels everything would be minimal and the numbers inside of those things would be pretty low the next one would be still being minimal but the numbers would be trending towards moderate right then low moderate we're just into moderate to high moderate the numbers are trending towards substantial to low substantial we just got into it to high substantial we're very clearly in the substantial level to then falling out of phase four and going into phase three phase three would be like what we were in spring right we'd be stay at home moving all the way across the continuum phase five would be everybody's back to school every day 100 of students are in attendance although it might still be with some kind of safety protocols in place as we look at this our dividing line on this really falls between low moderate and high moderate as we are in the kind of the low to mid moderate we can start bringing students back in an a b schedule as long as we limit how many times they mix throughout the day so that means limiting the number of passing periods which means limiting the number of classes that occur on any school day our hybrid schedule we built this summer had four mixes throughout the day the health department would like to see us limit those and you can see here like at low minimal we could do the four mixes but as we move to high minimal they'd like for us to drop those number of mixes and maybe three or less as we're in moderate where we're at now they'd like to see a single passing period if we could do that on a daily basis what starts to happen as we build these schedules is the schedules that were hybrids start to look more like the fully remote schedules right where you have big blocks of time where you have one class transition during the school day um students would come in for half a day but only go to two class periods not not four right so it starts to this is why it's starting to get helpful is because the guidance is starting to point us in the directional in the direction of instructional outcomes of planned design then what we're also trying to we're going to have to work on that we're going to have to work on a plan where the all of our students can come back on a regular basis as long as we're in modern but then we also want to work on programming that for our most at-risk students that even if we're in substantial that we're still able to provide students at risk resources they need on a daily basis right up until we move into phase three should that happen so we're going to try to cover the whole continuum from phase three to phase five with programming uh it looks very different depending on what the community spread is and where we're at so the group as we move more towards substantial the number of students and the size of the groups and the amount of mixing reduces as the transmission levels become more substantial so what's the dominating standard between low moderate it's or any of the other ones yeah that's what i was wondering is it how are you how are you deciding where you're at exactly so that's a great question and what it comes down to is our own school community and what those metrics look like for us so that's kind of up to to our administrative team in conversations with the local health department to determine where we're at right now and a plan that will work in it what we're trying to do is develop a plan that will work nearly through deep into high moderate right that until it looks like we're flipping close to flipping over to substantial that it will continue to work we want them the least flip-flopping like our students talked about earlier as possible so we wanted to develop a plan that it looks like nearly all the way through moderate and all the way through definitely all the way through minimal that we'll be able to have students here on a regular basis all students that wish to return returning um that's the goal of what we're trying to build right now but what switches that it's us talking to the health department about here's what the metrics look like here's what it looks like in downers grove and woodridge and our greater community here's been our response to it here's been the number of cases that we've seen show up within our own schools because that'll measure how well is our own community following the safety measures and protocols it's a very school-by-school case-by-case basis as to where that dividing line is and when you move from one to the other do you have data that looks at specifically our community versus the county as a whole yes yeah we can pull off of their dashboards our zip codes and see what our data looks like all right yeah i get it [Music] are there any other high schools that are currently in dupage county no other high school is open right now we're all wrestling with the same stuff and i'll talk about i'm getting to where that works all right so here's a this is a good one for you to just spend some time digesting and if you have questions uh you know i can definitely address them next week when we're hopefully talking about how future programming fits inside of this continuum so here i've just identified a few of the major challenges these are the top most difficult challenges there's many more underneath this but first of all is just you know developing programs for our students most at risk we want our most at risk students to be able to comment anywhere in that continuum from phase four on up right so we're working on that we're trying to bring [Music] students that fit that criteria back as soon as possible uh revising a schedule for all in-person learners that fits within that moderate and minimal range to do that work we're eyeing an october return and i'll explain a little bit more about that in a second we have some health guidance that has changed drastically especially related to the fitting of n95 masks for nurses and custodians so each one of those folks that might come in contact directly with cov related symptoms or have to clean up after that all need to meet with a medical professional and have them asks fitted and getting the appropriate masks that fit the person a and can be fitted appropriately b has been a challenge as you can imagine the availability of medical medical grade and 95 masks is you know it's not like you just walk into walgreens and pick one up so that has been a challenge to get all the other ppe we have had very little challenge getting but our first round of n95 masks that were on the idph list originally were then removed from the idph list so then we had to go acquire a separate round of masks which we did but they didn't fit half of our people so then we had to run order another round and every time those come in you have to schedule an appointment good sam has been amazing to work with with us on this they've been great partners but you imagine they're seeing a lot of people as well not just us so we have to get those folks scheduled get them in get it fitted make sure that they know what they're doing to be healthy and safe with those so that has been has slowed us down and getting some of our at-risk groups back because we can't bring anybody back until we have nurses to take care of people that might be sick and custodians that could clean a space where somebody could have had covet haven't you thought about certifying anybody yeah we've looked at it but right now we've just been focused on i'm just getting them fitted um transportation is hugely complex especially because we share transportation services with district 68 and 58 so any plan that we're talking about for returning all of our students for in-person learning also needs to fit inside of the district 58 and 68 plans that are being developed and they're developing their plans under the same changing guidance that we're developing our plans so now you have a three-way fit that have to work together as well so this is you know it's just the complexity of the problem that makes this go slower and it isn't just like we could start tomorrow um the changing exclusionary guidance and decisions and the availability of students and staff have that those changes have actually made this better or more likely that we're going to return in the in the loosening of those restrictions in the last week here however whatever plan that we build that fits in moderate and minimal we still need to make sure that it fits within the needs of all of our families so before we just bring everybody back we need to know who's coming back and how many families wish to return with school looking this way rather than what we talked about in the summer so just as in the summer we put out here's our plan here's how the hybrid schedule is going to work here's what it's going to look like for your kid do you want to come back to school with school looking this way we need to do the same provide that same opportunity to our families and whatever we build here so we need enough time to communicate whatever this new schedule is and what it looks like to allow families to understand that to tell us if they're coming back some families might look at this and say yeah you know i was concerned this summer but i'm in now because i'm i'm much more comfortable with this new plan than i was with the old plan other families might look at this and say whoa wait wait a second this summer i didn't know about this minimal moderate substantial stuff and now that we're in moderate and trending the wrong way i don't want to send my kid to school right so we built a lot of classroom assignments sections all of those things based on the number of students that would be in each classroom right because if we had a if we had a small class but more students returning in that small class and they were scheduled in a small classroom because it was a small class but now we can't do social distancing in there because more kids are going to return we had to move them to a larger class and us another class into that smaller class so we have to get all of that survey data back from our family so we can reschedule parts of the building and make sure social distancing can be maintained when students are back we also need to survey we sent out a survey to all of our families about transportation to know if students are coming and if they're riding the bus and if we have bus routes that have more than 11 students on them then we need to build seating charts for each of those buses that takes time as well over the next couple of weeks to build the seating charts communicate them to everybody make sure there are bus monitors that we have bus monitors for every bus that have been trained on how the seating charts work and everything else so there's a lot of pieces that go into this over the next few weeks this is why you're hearing october i know it sounds like we should be able to develop a schedule in the next couple of days and then next week have everybody back to school and as much as i would love to be able to say that we could do that it is just not possible to do that even if this is all that we had to do right and weren't just also trying to run teaching and learning at the same time we're doing all of this and we'll see what the cdc guidance says tomorrow i mean the change in guidance could cause us to have to go back rethink something and move it forward so one thing that happened at the beginning of the year we were when we were going to go hybrid was to start remotes because we had a staffing issue and then we were going to then go hybrid after that and i'm not hearing him making much of an issue of that right now is a major challenge yeah we the the challenge with staff at the beginning of the year was the accommodations process if you remember we had over 110 staff members that we had needed to work through those accommodation steps for so it was uh it wasn't staff didn't want to return it's we just had to work through that process and understanding 110 staff members individual situations and determining if we could meet that accommodation or not or if it was legitimate or not that just took us into the start of the school year we have resolved all of those we're prepared for this um and actually any schedule that we build with less class periods shifting in a day makes covering subs and those that much easier right so in some ways those changes make the staff issues simpler because it's just not as many moving parts once everybody's here it's important for people to hear that yeah i've already heard from some people is it is there's still a staffing problem no that's um and so and then the other piece of it on the transportation i mean i'm seeing signs up for first student hiring bus drivers i mean i mean isn't that also a possible challenge not not only the coordination with our our partner districts but just the availability of bus yeah we've been working very closely with first student and we'll be we believe that we'll have enough uh actual buses and and drivers uh the challenge is as you'll see in one of the next slides all the high schools in dupage county are on the same timeline right so we're all going to be looking to return at the same time uh or within weeks of one another so we we count on it we have a good relationship with first student and the fact that we do have this cooperative between the three schools although it does create complexities it does make us more of a heavy hitter in the bus market just because of the number of buses and and in the fleet that we need to maintain between three school districts so that does provide us a good leverage point to get our our buses up and running so hank and this is probably maybe you're going to get into this either later or maybe next week and you can schedule my biggest concern about any new schedule you know we have our where our schedule used to be we had the hybrid schedule we have the remote schedule so my biggest concern is if you look now if you go back a year ago when we're full time in school kids are doing four periods four period four days a week they're doing 50 minutes in a period so 200 minutes simple math now they're doing that same thing they're doing 80 minute classes twice a week so they're already losing 40 minutes of instruction time a week so i'm concerned about when we talk about limiting to one passing period to passing periods and only being at one or two classes i'm worried about impacting the amount of class time or face time with that teacher no matter if it's in person or or remote so that's a concern they didn't see up here like i said i'm sure that's more what we'll get into next week but it's a great point dan to just highlight and is a good uh good predictor of some of the things we'll talk about next week uh this year there was there's two about 240 minutes in a student schedule last year last year remember mondays are shortened because of the late start this year we have asked our teachers to plan for 240 minutes of student activity throughout the week so between the class periods on the 280 minutes plus the 25 minute period on monday and then any other work you're going to assign outside of that class meeting period should add up to that 240 minutes and as mike as you said teachers are a couple weeks into this and figuring out how to adjust and hit that i'm sure some are under that some are over that hopefully the difference of having 240 with and i don't know the numbers with 200 of it being either in person or on or you know zoom versus you know 150 so i i said that that's just going to be a big consideration in my mind a big concern as we look at any future schedules they actually mop up time with that teacher either remotely or in person yeah one of the things that definitely happens right now in fully remote is the most dedicated minutes that students are going to get as long as kovid's around right because the teacher for that black at time can have all of their students together in there once we move start moving to hybrid models you start doing everything's trade-offs right so the trade-off to get students back in person is inefficiencies in the schedule right they can't just wake up walk up to the computer and get to work they've got to get to school there's got to be passing periods we can only take up to half the students at a time you know and it's going to in some ways reduce the minutes it will reduce the efficiency of those minutes in comparison to they are how they are now right a teacher can really there's not many variables to there's no competing uh factors against them outside of the technology and you know the ability for students to pay attention for during a remote session right there's very few competing factors teachers can plan very clearly for what that environment is going to be assuming that everything works correctly right once we start moving to hybrid models teachers have to start planning for more types of learning activities right they're going to have to plan for students that are in person and students that are remote how those groups interact with one another how those transitions work they have to plan for in-person uh classroom management again and how does in-person classroom management work with masks on and with social distancing and all those things that we know eventually when students come back but you can imagine if right now and this is one of the concerns on our educational leadership team if right now the efficacy of instruction is at an increasing curve let's just assume it is because kids are getting used to it teachers are getting used to it everybody's used to the tools kids are planning they know their schedule all of those things are getting predictable and it's the maximum number of minutes that we can give everybody equally in that time as soon as we put a new schedule in place there will be a dip in that because everybody's got to plan differently teach differently it's everything it's the start of the school year all over again plus you need to build in opportunities for kids to get to know one another in person and to know each other's names and to know what that person looks like with a mask on and there is a huge of the school year there's going to be a tr there are trade-offs instructionally for the benefits of bringing students in for in-person learning and that's what we're trying to do is to make sure that the trade-offs are of value are worth it to make this all work worthwhile and that families know those trade-offs before they select what model do i want my child to be learning it so you know this is part of the stuff that takes time and working through and thoughtfulness especially because the rules of the game were kind of just established 10 days ago i can i just say too it's i think it's a bit of a trap if we get too caught up into trying to measure what we're doing based on the minutes a minute is not a minute is not a minute and in the end what we're really looking for are results right so the the question is ultimately um are we getting through the curriculum um are the students learning and you know what's what's the result of all of that and that's i think if we stay focused on that and and using the tools that we have that's that's where we need to be ultimately maybe we're not maybe we do need more minutes than what's being delivered right now we don't know yeah i mean because you can get through a schedule by just right i mean if there's in person there's asynchronous and there's synchronous learning and all three of them have positives and negatives and trade-offs and it's what mix of those is the best mix for our students moving forward and hopefully hopefully picking a model that's going to work and be there for more than a week people something like that yeah i've read some of you know some of the emails and and and you know people's comments about about things as well and it's it's i just think it's um i don't think that we we need to be looking at this from the standpoint of hey uh you know it's 240 minutes here it's 220 minutes this way or whatever and somehow there's something less happening no it's because we're really focused on quality it's what are you offering in each of those right in person it has a set of variables and experiences that we can't offer in any other way remote also has some of those you heard some of those advantages from our students tonight that we can't offer in person right um but it's about the balance of what goals are we trying to achieve instructionally within that and i will also point out like to bolster your minutes claim that you just made there's absolutely no educational research that correlates number of minutes to educational attainment right it's what happens inside of that time and the effectiveness of the teacher inside of that time is far more important but that's the trade-off right the more the teachers are having to plan for something new and adjust and adapt and i had this planned and now i have to do this that lowers the effectiveness of any minutes that we have within that class period so giving teachers time to plan to put together good experiences for kids to make sure that the time that they have with them is optimized to the the utmost of their ability regardless of the learning mode or model that is taking place is the most important factor which is another reason to go back to what you were saying nancy turning on a dime to go into one of these models that they've never taught in before is not a smart move to make we need to have time here for planning professional development to make sure that our teachers have time to do their work right because our teachers are professional they're going to research how other schools are doing this how it's working across the country and our teachers are going to put together good experiences for their kids but there's going to be a learning curve for any new model we introduced just like there was for remote learning at the beginning all right so programs for students that are most at risk t99 we're bringing them back tomorrow okay so remember that's its own building it's it's own students with their own unique set of uh abilities and and challenges so uh that's great we've worked through that uh we'll start bringing them back on an ab schedule each day uh tomorrow about just about who are these uh remind me about how many students do we have about how many teachers how many people are in that building i don't know in the new schedule how it's exactly working but it's less than 30 less than 30 yeah yeah on a daily basis i'm not sure i can't give you an example but generally but yeah um we're working as i mentioned earlier we're working with students that have internet challenges at home to try to get them long-term solutions but students that are critically challenged in that we're not able to close the gap if they're not able to connect to remote learning it's critical that we get them to a place where they can so we've identified a very small number of students at north a little bit larger number of students at south that we're going to start looking at just having them work from school remotely just knowing that we have internet we have power we have good environments where they could work we'll have an adult supervise that group of students while they just do the remote learning from here once again some approximation of the actual numbers i mean what's what small group in the context of 5000 students uh gina what numbers are we looking at for okay that's more than i would that's more than what i was so we're in the process of reaching out to all those families determine if it's appropriate for them to come in then we have to arrange for a location transportation all of those things to make sure that it it works and that they're being taken care of and we also have some folks with home challenges as well where they don't have stable housing or or there's some concerns about uh their wilderness or safety at home and we'll look at bringing some of those students in as well and they'll come in every day they won't be on anything yeah we're working on how that schedule will work for them uh english learners gina has been working on that all summer we're getting closer to those groups being able to come in and i say those groups because within the english learners there's multiple levels of english acquisition that we're responding to and then inside of special education we have the life skills group we have the multi-needs group we have other specific cohorts that we're looking to try to bring back in as well so the idea with all of these groups for students most at risk is to slowly just kind of build this and bring in more and more students and keep them sustainable and keep the programs we're trying to build those programs in a way that they're sustainable even if we move deeply into the substantial area so we're trying to keep the number of students that they come in contact with on a daily basis very small so that they could keep operating here even if transmission levels continue to grow this was the group that i was most when i was talking about remote for most this is that group so it's good to see that we're getting taken care all right so other neighboring districts you know i i meet with the other uh do do all dupage superintendents meet twice a week we meet on mondays and fridays to discuss how things are going to also meet with the dupage county health department understand what transmissions levels look like in the county and how to respond to those and then i meet with the district 99 partner superintendents once a week as well to discuss how programming is going in all of our partner districts we all continue to be very frustrated i imagine many of our families listen to what i'm talking about right now that want their kids back at school many of our students that want to be back at school tomorrow are frustrated and so am i so is our administrative team as i have continued to say if we would have had the guidance that we have now in june or july our kids would be back right now i am confident that we would have been able to build a safe program that worked in moderate or minimal especially given the time and space of the summer to do that however we are where we are now and you know being frustrated isn't going to help us fix it um so we're working closely to it yeah we we're sure that we don't have all of the best ideas in the county so we're working closely with other school districts to see what's working for them and how they're approaching it most of the other large public high schools and that's who we need to compare ourselves to that's right there's other large public high schools they're facing the same challenges and school sizes and uh and restrictions that we are are on similar time frames they're looking at either this week or next week starting to return their most at-risk students in a variety of different programs and then are looking at somewhere in october for a return for the sake of the the audience can you maybe further explain how it is that i mean the private schools are able to start but we we've already we already understand why you know we need to follow executive orders we need to follow the guidelines yeah because we are a public high school we clearly fall under the executive orders and the direction of illinois state board of education in the illinois department of public health right where a private school has more liberties that they can take within those guidelines it's essentially uh for lack of a better description a group of people that have a private membership to something and then they can decide amongst themselves to stomach they can limit their they you know they can ask their families to you know sign something that says they're not going to sue them or something i don't i don't know but there's there's more than more control over that they definitely have more control over that and they tend to be smaller settings right there's smaller settings so they they a lot of times have like a grade level right you know a single grade level at each you know so you know you're not talking about large even the larger high schools are still very small in comparison to what we're talking about here i mean when i see a lot of community members that are frustrated sending me school districts that are open many of those school districts have less students than one class in one of our high schools yes if you have 500 to 600 kids you likely can be open right now especially at the elementary level sure you're not seeing large high schools like us that are in close proximity to chicago or that have a train line running through us that are taking people back and forth to chicago every day that are open it's just it's not you don't see that in the suburbs yet right it's just and we're all in similar spots stuff further west you're starting to see like lincoln way open up you're starting to see some of the smaller high schools that are able to work in this and develop programming but districts our size with as many students and staff and moving pieces that we have and also what that also offers that is a great advantage to our community is a great wealth in curricular choice for students if we only offered like english one two three and four and we had science one two three and four and social science one two three and four it'd be real easy to build a schedule and to do things remotely and in person but we don't by the time our students are in their sophomore year they're even in their freshman year they have a couple of uh options to them but by the time they're in their sophomore and junior years and especially senior year the the degree of curricular variants that we have is so great that it makes building schedules very complex i just shared that with a constituent the other day uh almost exactly as you just said and and you know i think it's it's also worth noting you know so many of us went to high school so long ago me probably more than you know you guys are all young no at any rate um you know high school doesn't look today like it did for me back between 1980 and 84.
