next slide um this is to show a change um again just for a local control funding formula only thing that is changing is our funding per ada for the 21 22 school year you'll see that it's the exact same thing for 2021 because we're going to be held harmless next slide this is to give an overall um view of exactly of all our cares money that we're going to receive as well as the current projected spend by date so you'll see our two largest lump sum of money is part of the learning law so that's 8.7 and prop 98 combined is how we get the 9.2 that has to be spent currently as of today by december 30th there is legislation on the table to try to extend that but as of right now if that remains the same we would have to spend 9.2 by december we have our s for funds um that's 2.4 as well as our gear funds and of course our motto would be to spend the funds that we receive first that has a current expiration date and then we'll go forward next slide so here this is to give you um to put a dollar value to what the deferrals of five months would equate to if it all hit at one time that would be 24.6 million dollars but as i stated that's for the entire five months right now we have february february could just come in march we don't know when we just know that the total amount of referrals equate to 24.6 million dollars but it's over a five pair span it could be that um income tax revenue for the state comes in great and we won't have to realize any deferrals but as of right now what's budgeted and planned for is five months of deferrals next slide here is to show you a change in expenditures from that adopted from what we have now um this change of 1.4 is tied to us actually budgeting the lcap so we had some hourly expenditures that was not budgeted adopted and now these have been put in place next slide here this is to give you a depiction of a change in our purse rate what's real important here is just to realize the yellow highlighted section so since 1617 once our rates start to up increase our contribution towards spurs and stirs have increased from 2.3 million 3.3 million and 5 million dollars so just to put that in perspective of if those rates did not increase over those periods of time that would be money that we can actually do more great things within our district next slide here is our three percent reserve so before and adopted we were chasing some big numbers um adjustments that would have to be made in order for us to maintain solvency and so we went from having a need of a 3.5 million dollar adjustment in 21.22 to only a 5 million dollar adjustment and these adjustments as you can see we have more money we receive more funds right now but these adjustments are basically saying based on this slide if we were wait to wait to 23 24 we would have to make a 13 million dollar cut adjustment in one year to avoid that we want to be sympathetic uh uh methodical about our process and break that 13 million dollars up over a three year time and by doing this this will help us to stay farther away from the classroom create more creative ways such as increasing revenue minimizing expenditure it does not have to equate to a layoff but if we take time to do it that's how we do it but if we rush and haste and wait until 2023 we know 85 percent of our budget is people and that's gonna be the first thing so our goal is to figure out how we could plan this out to ensure that we're doing everything we can possibly on our end to be creative and wise so that we can make sure our great employees don't have to be impacted next slide here this is just giving you a visual of what it looks like for our reserve right now um in 2122 um we are banking on 13 13.7 million then 14.2 million then we are going to drop down to 9.9 million and by 2324 if everything remains the same we would only have 3.6 million dollars in our reserve and what's significant about that is our average payroll for one month is over five million dollars so that means that we actually allowed our allowed ourselves to go to this trend to only have a 3.6 million dollar reserve and let's just say we were hit with another um coven 19 it'll be coveted 24 and we were not held harmless that means we would have to figure out how we're going to handle this and we would only be able to make one month's payroll as things stand as it stands right now next slide and right there i know i talk super fast but i will take a breath and allow you to ask me all the questions in the world [Music] okay does anybody have any questions so i have a question so the 13 million plan out it we're looking starting at 2021 through 2024 and the way that it was broken down it was broken down uh 5 million in 2021 2022 and then the next year another 5 million and then in 2023 2024 it would be 3 million correct so that's just a proposal that's not a definite number that's just if we wanted to chase the 13 million dollars that's the way we can go about it is there a reason is there a reason why we're not starting this year there is no reason we most definitely can start i wanted to be consistent with what was presented that adopted and that adopted there was nothing projected in 20 um 2021 but that is always an option so can we just clarify gabriella are you because i think what i heard latosha say is or um that she thinks that you're asking that we would make cuts for the during this school year is that what for this school year or your time out for next year right so the project the the projection was starting next school year 2021 and right but but i mean the way so we made we already made all of how many cuts did we make for this i guess latasha how many how much did we cut last year for this school year's fiscal budget million dollars eight million dollars yes ma'am so it would be good to reflect that i may consider the board can so yeah so we did cut eight million this year i think that's that was the point i was trying to make so so uh to that point then chilean so what we're saying is or latasha you can clarify where there is there's no number in the box for 2021.

if you like it okay then we have a motion emotional check segment from margaret all in favor that would be item 4.4 i had a 4.5 recommendation to approve the arizona deaf and blind agreement dr wright we provide services for our students that are that are deaf or blind and we are able to accommodate them and provide those those services right on site at the old elementary school the multi-purpose area and so we've provided an area for arizona deaf and blind in the same area as our special education quadrant and we're seeking board approval for the iga which is a cost neutral arrangement we're not making money we're not losing money rely on them to use our services and to help our kids any questions john we have a motion to accept item 4.5 a recommendation to approve the nakog head start intergovernmental agreement the ita with nacog this is for his star right it's actually a pretty exciting expansion of services provided provided to children that need a head start their kids that are delayed or are in situations that are less favorable in most cases they're just average families but the child is delayed in some way we have currently two classrooms being used in our preschool program it's not our preschool program but it's the name head start it's a similar area they're going to expand the areas that they have now by two classrooms our one classroom that has been essentially displaced because of the expansion has been moved just around the corner so it still has access to the playground and access to a restaurant we've coordinated this change with our special ed director and the corresponding preschool program employees and so work that out and so this is going to provide opportunities for about another 35 young children in our area to have head start at no cost the district will also add they probably invest somewhere between 20 and 30 000 into the classroom because they redo the restrooms the flooring the paint and they're updating again the playground to make sure it meets the name cog restrictions requirements we are also able to use that as long as it's not in use our own preschool babies i didn't see i can see construction going on there i mean just a lot of activity going on there past couple weeks any questions how does this impact our current preschool program our concern was make sure that we didn't our current program did not lose any space or access and so that they haven't already essentially moved them around the corner to a very similar room and it has access to the playground and they have access to a restaurant any further questions [Music] it's your turn to give us a monthly financial report and actually it's two months hasn't it yes it is you know what just for people so we're not looking at our phones this was emailed to us previously so that's what i'll be looking at i'm not checking texts i am actually reviewing that so that's where it's located for us and i have it up on the screen as well all right i have two months for you the first one is the balances as of july 31st i'm looking at auxiliary operations tax credit and student activities do you have that report chris okay i have the balances as of july 31st 2020.

the num so that's not saying what we are cutting this year for next year that is being indicated or we already made those cuts for this year last year so so there still is work to do this year on making five million dollars worth of cuts for next year correct and right now yes i'm gonna just say correct okay a board member opinion i was gonna ask regarding the care cares funds the federal uh cursed ones where would we see um where that fund is being spent and how are we spending that money so majority there are not right excuse me i'm so sorry i cut you off before you were finished i apologize no it's okay um so i'm sorry do you understand my question right yes i do okay and so a majority of the 9.2 is tied to the learning loss mitigation plan um well the baby l cap that um some people are calling it um others was just tied to cares pp e um so if at any time i could present a report on exactly how that was expensed but majority of it is tied to the learning loss plan yeah i i would i would like to if you can please just give us a print out of where the fund is going sure please thank you that's no problem okay great board member greer so in regards to the to that um money those monies that that uh yolanda was just talking about do you said that 9.2 million if i'm not mistaken 9.2 million have to be spent by the end of this year and though there's legislation to to extend that deadline so just out of curiosity are based on on the rate at which we are spending it do are we at risk of not expending those monies by december or are we are we solidly looking like we are on track to certainly have those money spent by december as long as i'm here we will not leave a pity on the table we will spend it all okay okay a board member cruz gonzalez thank you yeah i have a couple questions um so one uh let's can we go to the slide before or looking at the district reserve analysis right um you know there's a big gap between what we budgeted in our on audited actuals so how much of that is one-time dollars versus just savings because we were not in person last year how much of the savings is tied to one so so our so our adopted budget that we thought we're gonna have 5.6 million dollar reserve and we're looking at 13.7 million dollar reserve right so that's a that's a a gap of what um eight eight million so how much of that eight million is one time like is is is there because of one time dollars versus how much so or or how much of it is because of savings that we had sure so 300 000 is tied to savings 6 million is tied to the change in lcf revenue and the remaining is tied to um deferred revenue from 1920 that we did not spend that's carried over okay thank you um and then going back um i'm looking at well i'll say the cares questions for for when we when we look at the lcp um um i did want to ask a question about the um that the the estimated versus the fund expenditures the estimated versus actuals um the biggest i mean i see that we actually it looks like we spent um oh no that's different i couldn't tell that was a negative so we actually save money on this never mind my question is not um uh never mind that was that was my other question but i was misreading the chart okay so um yeah so then my last question is on looking at the um the there's a there's a chart that has um the enrollment with with like the the funds for each of the years let me find it yeah the local control funding formula so i'm looking at these numbers so for 2020 21 it says we're estimating our enrollment is 77 219.

so do we feel confident that we're going to get to that number what are we at right now so um so those numbers are basically what was presented and adopted so those will not be tied to funding um so um that's the rolling projection and we're funded off of ada so as long as we hit our ada marker we're okay but the good thing is for this year and next year ada will not be a factor what will be a factor is our engagement with our students and being able to monitor that but we are going to be held harmless on our funding our rover number we do know um right now we're below our projection of 7216 but our goal is to see exactly where we end up by norm day okay so i so i understand that i know that for the next two years it's kind of kind of like whoo that breed aside relief because we're going to get funding based on last year's enrollment but i but i'm thinking about our budget like the cuts that we're looking at right and you're talking about a big if we have a large drop of enrollment as it looks like we may have right those are some um significant decreases that have to have that have to happen um in the third year out let's say if they once if they normalize our funding back to the formula right so when you look at those the numbers that you um estimated like the 5 million 5.3 million is that that's taking that into account like you're estimating those pieces so that no no not being honest no by first interim yes i will be able to say yes um and you're making a good point because right now though we're being held harmless we're going to be here and as soon as they tell us we're going back to being funded by our ada it's everyone is going to realize a huge drop because not only is it going to be ada but it's going to be 80 a for 2021 that we don't even know what our ada will be on and if we're held harmless for 2122 that means the 2020 the 2122 ada is what we're going to be funded off so we're going to be having to guess to see what those numbers are truly get ada and realize what that is and my goal is by first interim to at least say this is where we are this is our current ada and if all things remain the same this is what our funding would be if we were held harmless and that would be our goal of create balancing our budget off that figure thank you i appreciate that i'm looking forward to those numbers and i mean the only reason i bring it up is because i think you know i'm bringing a little side of relief because i feel like we have a little breathing room um with with the budget looking at it but i do think i know that i mean as a board we want to be fiscally responsible so knowing that you know two years out we're gonna have to make major cuts right i mean that means that we may be in we may be in a position where we're having these difficult conversations where we have a healthy reserve but we know that it's sort of it's either one-time money or it's really it's it's due to this because what's happening with pandemic and so we really have to think about let's let's make sure that we can no we can sort of have those cuts be gradual like like latasha laid out so that we're not like you know saying well no we look pretty good this year let's not make any cuts because in two years we're gonna be like oh my god where are we gonna find 15 million dollars right so so that i mean that was the reason i asked that because i really think that we need to keep that in our minds um because we i mean our declining enrollment didn't go away right so i think it's something we have to deal with remember if i can if i can uh build on what you said because i think this is extremely important uh to a lesser degree but it's kind of the situation we were in um when we were at the state level uh ramping up uh to get us to quote unquote full funding and so in a way that was masquerading because that was growing faster than our declining enrollment uh and that was that was a long process that eventually caught up to us again in in a in a in a smaller version but but there is that um that potential right that that this this held harmless um if if to your point if we don't if we don't keep our eyes on on that enrollment and are projecting and working towards that uh there is there is that small potential that uh again it masquerades um that and so we have to be we have to be diligent to make sure that uh we're keeping our eyes on that yeah and that i i couldn't agree martial and and arthur with with what you're and latasha i mean everyone is saying the same thing and yeah let's not let those numbers fool us or anyone um that yes you know though we may have bought ourselves some time that um i would rather us be good stewards of that time uh that that we have as opposed to you know kicking cans down the road um and having larger snowballs that we have to deal with later and so um yeah so so so this this in no way um you know lets us off the hook so so to sp so to say uh from having some some tough conversations and and yeah it'd be i'm also interested in knowing what what our actual numbers are i see what our what our our funding is going to be and how some of those some of that you know is looking to remain relatively constant um but but yeah we need to continue to look at where our enrollment numbers are and and what that you know what that means for our for our funding um once the the cliff um the inevitable cliff comes board member uh rodriguez pena yes i totally agree with my colleagues i think we need to be proactive and you know it doesn't snowball on us in the last minute kind of spread it out but um regarding the um the cares ones i also would like to know um if you can latasha um you know give us give us a list of what can that points be used for also right you know where is it how are we spending it and what can we use it for because i know you know we have some restricted money is it restricted for certain things only having to do with the covet 19 or um you know how hard can be utilized sure i can give that in report but i can share um in a nutshell some of our funds are designated to pp e um but the large bulk of it like i said is learning loss um that can't be tied to salaries meaning subplanting so we can say oh let's just take all of our current teachers and let's just try and learn laws it literally has to be tied to achieving a goal of mitigating loss and destruction time since march and ms um dr dana and her team is working um they're going to present the great pan that you guys already seen before but we've been working in collaboration with each other just to see how we can meet the needs of all of our students so so that's also like i mean so can it be used for materials pencils books supplies educational technologies everything that we know to helping our students yeah achieve that learning gap that they're okay so so if i have we could have a list i really would appreciate that you got it no thank you no problem okay board member ariana's actually that was going to be one of my uh questions on the federal funding the cares act um since it the deadline to to go ahead and utilize these funds is december 2020 um that was going to be my question if we could get it uh because this needs to be done asap um and like you said on your time uh miss latasha that um every penny will be spent and so uh looking forward to that list the second in january which is uh the reconfiguration of the conversations that we need to have a five-year three-year five-year 10-year plan that we we need to okay you froze on me but i think i got the gist of what you're thinking the five-year plan and i've been charged with that task and that is my goal we're going to work on that in collaboration of with the budget committee so we can identify where we are for the next five years get some input presented come back to you all several times on hey this is where i hear some ideas and get feedback so that is the goal i'll be working with our amazing superintendent in collaboration to give that to you guys okay board member pit rodriguez pena do you have anything else oh okay just making sure okay uh does already so at this point um any more questions or comments so do i have any motion to [Music] so i i move to approve this the the unaudited actuals thank you thank you okay moved by board member chris gonzales second board member rodriguez pena um time to vote and i think actually my motion was an honored actuals and the budget update yes thank you thank you latasha that was really great um presentation thank you good job yes okay so at this point um it passes 5-0 and we will move to the consent calendar um item 10.1 all matters listed under the consent calendar calendar are considered by the board to be routine and will be enacted by the board in one motion in the format following the last consent calendar agenda item there will be no discussion of these items prior to the time the board staff or the public request specific items to be discussed if discussion is requested by a board member that item will be removed from the consent calendar and will be considered separately the superintendent and staff recommend approval of all consent calendar agenda items so do i have a movement on the floor emotion motion to approve consent calendar all second motion to approve consent calendar okay uh motion to approve uh board member ariana is seconded by board member cruz gonzalez uh do we have any comments questions concerns nope go ahead and vote what about student vote oh student vote thank you um student board member arkenberg how do you vote yes congratulations and okay the rest of us are going to vote and it passes 5-0 so at this point we'll move on to um 11.0 items pulled from the consent calendar there were none uh 12.0 human resources uh 12.1 resolution 2021 04 amended teaching assignment in high need area and mr ortega uh president uh board president biblesvogel if i if i may uh just to provide a little bit of background on this resolution this came before the board on august 4th um unfortunately there was an error and i take responsibility for that error the recommendation contained the word variable term waiver in the description and that should have read provisional internship permit otherwise known as a as a pip these words are important for the commission on teacher credentialing so this resolution is before you again to correct that error thank you thank you assistant superintendent earl pio is there any discussion okay we'll go ahead and vote okay passes five zero now we'll move on to item 12.2 ratify approval of consultant howard tara's md resolution number 20 20 21 14.

in auxiliary operations we had 114 324.64 the tax credit account we had 205 399.76 student activity account we had 191 377 and 12 cents the beginning balances are the balances of the july 1st 2020 those are the balances we rolled over the revenues we took in was three thousand sixty five dollars and seventy three cents the expenses are the balances from july first all the way through the end of august which is accumulation of eight thousand four hundred four hundred that includes the transfer out of 225 955 to the energy and water savings account year-to-date expenses which is marked number one was one million four hundred and eighty four thousand two hundred and eighty dollars what we haven't covered which includes mainly salaries and benefits is 10 million 263 895 this leaves a budget balance of 2 million five thousand two hundred and sixty one dollars for the maintenance and operation account the next page is the income and expense for fund 610 or our capital outlay account the board adopted a budget of six hundred and fifty seven thousand three hundred and fifty one dollars urine in eight expenses which is marked item number one two hundred and fifty eight thousand three hundred and ninety dollars what we have in comfort is a hundred and twenty thousand 782 item number two and budget balance is the next page is the cash flow statement or how much cash we have in the account you'll see on the bottom as of august 31st we had an estimated cash amount of 604 464 in cash in maintenance and operation and then in the district additional assistance fund or understood capital we had negative 133 667 the next page is the cash account from the county treasurer's office and from the captain from the treasury's office you'll see that we had a cash balance of one a little over 1.7 million dollars one million seven hundred and sixty seven thousand two hundred and seventy dollars and our cash accounts for mno fund 610 and our adjacent ways account if you have any questions in regards to those accounts are those reports i have questions no thank you appreciate that next time there's 4.8 on the agenda and this is a superintendent's report directly i'll turn some time [Music] school participation whether that's academic or extracurricular clubs or whatever those waivers must be submitted prior to student participating and then we've uh also the county has established safety protocols for outbreaks an outbreak is determined by two unrelated cases so just as recent as yesterday where we had three children in the same family that were diagnosed with the disease an outbreak would be two children from completely different families completely different grade or classes they're not related either by association or blood they're not living together they're not in the same sports team they're completely unrelated in that case their protocols that the county steps in does contact racing those the school or the facility impacted shutdown for two weeks and cleaned and then reopened so that's the we hope not to get there it's another compelling reason to go to an alternating schedule where you have 40 of the students there every other day instead of 100 there on any one day and that uh that rounds out i don't have anything to add um that we have not yet discussed the extracurricular 7312 is any extra thing can you explain that for those that are involved okay the way it stands right now is that the state and county levels allow for fall sports to move forward on every sport if the levels are maintained or continue to decline there is some dividing for football and so the local the white mountain school districts comprised of snowflake ourselves around other st johns are trying to get the eia to say look what is an acceptable level because if they're given a statewide mandate our area is not the same as it is in another area and so we're planning on moving forward october 3rd with football we have a game tomorrow boys and girls soccer at showboat in most instances fan participation is limited and in most cases it's two tickets per athlete so the parents can go and uh it depends on the sport too just because the sheer size of our stadium and uh you know it'll be different in volleyball because there's three teams of 15 about 45 it's indoors indoors fewer participants will have to work through that so there i will admit there's still some things up in the air um we're planning on playing all these wars participating cross country's going forward soccer's moving forward there's some questions about football yet but we still have time to address those are there any other questions that don't have like any questions that's the one question i had kind of partially attention all right thank you dr wright the next item on the intent is just to announce the next board meeting meetings will be tuesday october 13th at five o'clock at this location so we have a motion to his undergraduate 12.4 azusa educators association aea sunshining proposal board president um i i'd like to kind of give some background before uh the board and also for our public um uh the sun shining process is an important part of the negotiations between a bargaining unit and the um in this case this instance the district government code requires that the governing board make public parts of the uh contract that will be negotiated um and then that the public have an opportunity to comment on their positions uh the um the parts of the contract that were open were shared um as in accordance with the brown act um on thursday of last week um i do want to highlight components of the articles that the association the teachers association will be um asking to negotiate they have article one um recognitions this relates to unit modification and adding preschool teachers to the unit this is a carryover from last year article 3 evaluation procedures this is this will speak to a mou extension to a current pilot mou that the district has with aea around evaluations article 5 hours of employment also an mou related to covin 19 and article eight safety conditions is um also an mou related to cope in 19 and then 14 and 15 are 14 is salary schedules and roles and then 15th health and welfare benefits so those are the articles that the teachers association have brought before the board of education and enrollment courses so that students can take college-level cte courses at the high schools and then we also want to make sure that they're prepared for whatever courses that they might choose to take in the community college all geared towards opportunities that give them earning potential when they graduate from the high school or when they move on to community colleges and ultimately get a job that's a very brief summary we're very fortunate that this is the first year that ausd in conjunction with consortium members at dwary unified monroeville unified and charter oak unified applied for it's 5 37 p.m and september 17th and 2020 and that's called to order the uh city of ann arbor public market advisory commission um so stephanie can you do the roll call yes peter wolf here lisa young here helen chandler here all right and we've got jeff namath we see him but we can't hear him so i would assume that that is here then holly parker i'm here and then we have our guest from ctn that is recording us all right [Laughter] um item c you should have received the agenda um from for this agenda and so i i request a motion to approve the agenda motion to approve is there a second all in favor say aye hi hi all right hi jeff we can see you but we can't hear you he looks like he can't hear us yet either yeah let's see oh here he comes he's connecting to audio yep oh i gotta can you hear us are you there jeff might not be working we'll just do hand signs okay all right all right um so we'll move on to item d first public commentary agenda items only are there any public members in the audience no no they're not all right well seeing none we'll move on item e approval of previous minutes of the previous meeting so you should receive the minutes from the previous meeting any changes additions people have um do i hear a motion to approve a motion to approve is there a second second all in favor say aye aye aye then it passes all right uh now moving on to the the main event for today regular business items item g so stephanie all right well i just was gonna you know continue our conversation that we were having previously not really much has changed um we've had a one customer who was sending us photos um that they felt that there was a vendor that didn't have their mask on uh satisfactorily so we had to follow up with them um that is resolved now but they actually uh contacted the mayor so they did feel that strongly about it um yeah so that's pretty much the only thing that's been different in terms of people reacting to our changes um but nothing major beyond that so sorry one second jeff can you hear us i don't have any capacity to turn his mic on so i don't know if he actually has a mic and whatever he's using oh now it looks like he's got it muted all right jeff can you unmute your mic unmute yourself can you do it hi hey can we hear you jeff oh no [Laughter] can we can you hear us now can we hear you can you hear me yeah oh no yes okay what did i miss a ladder no nope no i was having technical difficulties getting everyone's video to work so we're all in the same boat with technical difficulties today all right yeah we're just doing the uh agenda and minutes approval good deal all right all right so that's for the covid related changes and follow-ups anything else with the covet stuff um not really we just have still like we've been bringing on just very few vendors based on need we did have a new mushroom vendor start on saturday um the reason we brought them on is that was a big need that we had um the great continuity there is they were actually a close family friend with chris wright who was our former mushroom bender who has passed um so that was really great that it was you know very close friends with that person so you know it's i think it's the perfect person to take their space and you know we're still fitting everyone we haven't turned anyone away yet um we've been averaging between you know 68 and 70 vendors per saturday market we've been hovering between 28 and 32 on a wednesday market um the food trucks have been back on wednesdays yesterday we had hero or villain um next week we're gonna have simply spanish and we've been alternating those two uh we did try to reach out to some of our regular food trucks that do the rallies um but there's not as much interest as we thought that there would be but obviously that's cobit specific um but yeah so that's that's pretty much what's been going on in our wednesday markets um yeah so i don't know if anyone wanted to chime in any vendors wanted to add with their experiences um about that how things are going with the market changes not yeah i just really wanted to update you all just keep keep the conversation going um about what we've been doing so yeah i don't have anything really to say other than uh we're glad we're still open and doing it and it's working pretty good under the circumstances and all the students coming back you know which i think we're doing um yeah good jeff do you have any feedback about how things have been going um we've been going pretty good i feel like the crowds are still down a little bit but i mean that's probably you know to be you know expected with everything going on right well from the some customers they think the crowds are out of control somebody compared it to out to art fair crowds so it's all about people's perception i guess yeah it was nice to see all the students last weekend i was i was pleased to see um that everybody was back and most people seemed like they were being pretty respectful of the rules yeah i mean the vast majority of people are uh definitely wearing masks the only difficulty we have had a little bit is people trying to bring dogs but we did step up our amount of signage about that and i think ever since we put more signs up that really has not been an issue because we had to originally sacrifice some of our signs to turn them over into mask signs and copied uh signs but that's pretty much been the major things other than that yeah most feedback has been very positive helen quick question how does the crowds compare to what's happening at eastern market um i think so this is just perception and also i don't personally attend um ann arbor or eastern but i talk to all the people that are doing it so that's the uh to say first but um like eastern is at the capacity for how many people they're allowed to let into the market at any given time so they have had to like regulate how many people can come in you know um and i mean i would say all of our markets the crowds are depressed slightly so um the other thing about eastern market i mean actually both of those markets ann arbor and eastern very long so there's like lots of opportunity for customers to spread themselves out um yeah that's all i really got great thank you yeah yeah uh with that said this is not specific to cobin but i just spoke with some researchers from michigan state earlier this afternoon and they are starting a farmers market study which they do want to talk to some vendors about experiences between different markets and obviously covet is come into play and there's going to be some questions so there will be more information forthcoming about that but they want to do specific interviews and compensate each vendor for that interview too so more info forthcoming great all right um so should we move on to winterization yep that's all i have for that i end up with the agenda item so winterization so i've been trying to do a little bit more research the last few times i'm getting seasick watching jeff move around sorry it's okay it's out of the corner of my eye i'll just have to like cover that channel um yeah so anyway winterization of the market i have spoken with josh he has referred me to hillary who was the point person previously on this we're going to have an official meeting with her and colin sometime later this month but i do have a quick update where they're saying um it's probably going to be on pause for now because turning it into an indoor space could bring in a lot of other issues that we're not prepared to deal with in terms of having to reduce the amount of people per time obviously it's winter crowds aren't as large but i think that's part of it and then secondly the budget right now is not necessarily favorable to taking on a big project that doesn't mean that we can't move forward in conceptualizing and continuing to discuss um but i hate to be the the one to bring this news i know you all got so close to completing it um previously but again more specific info forthcoming but that's the only update i really have is that you know it doesn't look good to make it indoors and i'm not sure the budget can support the project at this time sorry i guess one thing i might advocate for is trying to make sure to track down all the records for what we did before too because i i just to make sure because it may it sounds like it's going to get punted to the future but if we can ideally use that information that we had from the previous stuff there's a lot of information that was gathered and i i have parts and pieces but ideally it should reside within the market and to make sure we've got a big pretty well documented folder of all that stuff so that when we do come back to it it's like plans on the shelf i think that would be a valuable thing yeah we do and that's what the meeting with hillary will be about because she was the one that was taking the lead in terms of contacting the architect for mock-ups and things like that so that's what my meeting that is upcoming will be about and once i have that meeting i will definitely report back to you all um with the details well the other thing too with that is making sure that we keep it a record of that for uh posterity in terms of there's turnover and so that when people new people come in it's like did we ever talk about this and then it will be like let's let's restart over there well it is in our record it's not that we don't have a copy it's just a question of where right now and plus there's so many other things going on yeah it might be a winter project to organize that but yeah don't worry there's records somewhere somewhere whether we can leverage them right now i think is really the problem i know everyone was really looking forward to it someone was asking me oh we're gonna do this this this winter right and i don't know holly do you have a question um yeah i think i have a comment on the question so just i you this is you probably know this stephanie it's probably super obvious but one point on the latest plans for winterization that i think actually um are helpful it's a helpful part of the plans for dealing with any winterization that might be possible during covid which is that the structure that we were looking at was um movable right it was like things pieces that could be rolled up and down so that you know i think the idea was that it could still be open air um and it would still allow for a lot of of air flow and ventilation and i actually think if there were ever a winterization project that was made for covid circumstances this was it um so i might just encourage you to push back a little bit on the idea that moving anything to and uh it's not like it's not actually moving to indoor it's just moving to protecting from the elements and it allow it would still allow for complete open air or at least a great deal of ventilation um so that was just the point and the encouragement that i want to make because um you know just would hate for this to completely derail that potential and the other thing is i wonder about this budget issue and i don't know but i was under the impression that there was funding that was raised specifically for the winterization and so i guess i'm just curious about i've never quite understood the budget implications and how that works and certainly understand that other things might take precedence and or take priority and it but it um i guess i'm wondering what the it what and if any of the funding is actually set aside specifically for winterization or if now it's just like back into the city pool and so it can be repurposed and i just feel like um i as the commission we should be aware of that and and keeping an eye on on what the funding is and if there are any boundaries around it and if not where it goes um because i think part of our job is to advocate for the market and so um i guess any information you have or can get about the reality of what the budget for the winterization is and and what that means i it would be really helpful yeah and i'm just sharing what they told me um specifically when i taught when i just got a quick email from hillary who had been the point person before she was the one that brought up um being worried about making anything in enclosed space i mean i don't know if she used the word indoor if i just substituted that um but so that was yeah so that's just me passing along what they were saying but i completely hear what you were talking about and we want to make sure that you know it stays at the top of our list um but in all reality it's probably not going to be occurring in the next couple months but again i'm having a meeting with them coming up and i'll have more specific information to share at that time that sounds good thank you yep and i appreciate holly's uh comments about the budget because we've been given figures in the past but um it was always unclear how the funds would be be allocated and um also i know peter asked about in the past if there was a mechanism for fundraising for the farmers market too um so when you're talking to the folks at city parks is your possibility you know like a friends of the farmers market um sort of uh i don't know if it's an actual non-profit peer probably knows more but but uh a place to create things where people might be able to donate and how that might be able to happen if that was something that the city wanted to follow up on gotcha i can speak to that a little bit too because i know that for the two things with the funding i know is that when the market went from uh its own organization to the parks then it ended up bringing in with it a budget that a balance it was like i don't know 300k something like that um and that was to be allocated exclusively for the market stuff by by the market and the rest of the budget would come from the general parks fund and so that but that was always very mushy as to exactly how much that would be or where that would come from or how much was available the other part of it too is that we did go through an exercise a couple of years ago about trying to figure out how to if people want to donate to this or you know to make the winterization happen how could they do that or could they do that if the public the people of ann arbor want to do that and that it was uh one other markets have done this where they have a not-for-profit that's associated with it which collects funds for this it's like a building endowment kind of and then they shuttle it over once the things come through and i looked into that about the establishment of that and there are ways to do it but it was it was a very at least i we couldn't find an easy structure within the city that was a parallel for that and maybe that that's i think still valuable because there were definitely people who were interested in kicking in a chunk of change um and if it was something we actually made and asked for we we might be able to get something there but it's it that infrastructure still isn't in place but it definitely other markets have used that very successfully and for as a fundraising mechanism so yeah and i know that josh did say you know he thought that the quote that you all were working with before was very reasonable and was doable so i know that's not the issue it's just that it's covet specific uh budget constraints and again i don't know what that looks like yet but i will have more information forthcoming and as you're talking i'm trying to look through our files to see if i can find anything else that's got more details but not at the moment so i guess i have a question yep okay you guys can hear me yes okay um so i guess that raises a good question that i guess i always had and i never asked does the market have its own bank account so to speak does it have its own money or is it just part of the parks um i would say it's both it is part of the parks but we do have our own budget yes okay all right understanding with that is too that the account that we have can't ever grow it can only shrink um was the agreement that somehow or that so we can't put more into that somehow because they it's like just un-centered out i guess i'm not sure at least that was what was told to me a couple years ago which okay well this year is probably you know very different in terms of because we have been actively giving refunds to people for the days that market has been closed um they have also been doing um attendance waivers for people that might not be able to do covet so i know that in terms of our take this year obviously we're bringing in a lot less income um people are paying less install fees because they're not using as much space in addition to that so and of course we don't really have many special events that are happening because ordinarily the market is rented out um for a lot of different things that revenue is not coming in this year um the revenue we do have coming in is the artisan market in addition to our you know vendor fees and stuff like that so yeah so it's not necessarily that it's being taken into another place within the city is that our own budget is not being uh replenished at the same level as it as it is ordinarily but again that's not to say that there isn't a designated fund there may be um and that is something i'm hoping to learn when i meet with hillary um in the next couple weeks any other comments on winterization all right um item three comments questions general comments general questions i figured i would throw that out there in case people wanted to raise something i know it's not in the usual format but well then actually end the related note then moving on to new business any non-agenda items that anyone has seeing none we will move on to item j second public comment are there any members of the public i see none on my interfaces so yeah i don't see anyone all right well then we'll do item l adjournment so we're here by adjourning at 5 59.

i'd like to welcome everyone to our meeting tonight please stand for the pledge of allegiance i pledge allegiance to the flag in the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all this stuff you know i'd like to take the role if i may this is the brew mr capano here mrs fredo mr garcia dr pangliano mr raincourt mr russo mr shelley yeah mr tarabaki yeah you came from gina a couple items i would just like to review um i just like to thank our administration our board and our staff for a very smooth opening last week students started attending on wednesday the 9th that was when we had our first group of elementary hybrid students in and so since then i have to say things have gone very very well entry in the morning students are having their temperatures taken staff members are completing a health form and having their temperatures taken and so far things seem to be running running very very well i have to commend our teachers who are doing a great job in the classroom uh they're teaching simultaneously um a live remote for students who are virtual and also for students who are in class if you get the opportunity to walk through the buildings uh or parents may even see classrooms because their kids are on um are on virtually you can see that all of our students are wearing masks we've had very little issue with that whether it be elementary middle school or high school uh students are socially distanced during classroom time and during entry and during dismissal so i really want to commend everyone for their efforts it's only with everyone's cooperation and working together that we had a successful opening and i hope it continues i just want to make mention that four sports other than volleyball uh started again up on monday so at the end of this month which is september 29th 30th october 1st then we will start games with football tennis and soccer you know the middle school sports we said last time we suspended for this school year but uh once we get into uh the school year another week or so we're gonna look into some type of intramural programs for our middle school students and our high school in your packet tonight um dave porfido our uh athletic director sent us an initial spectator policy uh he came up with a policy based on uh guidelines from the state and um right now it's just it's an initial draft copy until we actually start games and spectators actually attend we're going to see how this works in terms of how many people we can actually accommodate we want to be able to accommodate obviously the teams the parents of those teams of those participants and then how many students we can then handle and community members and so on and so forth a lot of that is going to depend really on what the participation looks like and uh and speaking to mr porpito today um he's you know gauging how many people we can fit in the bleachers so that they're socially distanced uh how many people can stand on the field and so on and so forth so i told him that the policy that he put together for games at our field and also at the school number six direct is really based on um guidelines from the state and how he thinks it could possibly work i think once we start football or once we have a soccer game at number six school or at the high school then he will have to tweak the guidelines to be able to maybe accommodate less people or maybe if we're fortunate accommodate more people but right now what you have in your packet is the um draft policy of the spectator policy uh once it's finalized uh and i'll share it with the board then we'll post it online but um you know he'll get the word out to coaches and to students about having parents come and so forth so on and so forth so we did begin again on monday and um hopefully we'll have a successful fall season and once we get into october we're supposed to be getting some guidelines for the uh winter season uh and see how those sports will go a lot of those are indoor and i don't know what the state is going to say about student participation but we'll wait and see um i'll be posting a flyer to to our website we're going to be offering again this year it's called an sat boot camp for seniors this year it'll be remote we have 10 dates where students or eight dates right now where students can uh it's for free at no cost we have two of our staff members in the high school working with our seniors um to try to prep them for the sat so um a flyer is going out uh to our students and you post it to our website uh next week as i mentioned to our personnel committee uh we'll be appointing and i'll send out the recommendations to the rest of our board uh later this week for the co-curricular activities that we can offer this year as i mentioned there's there are some activities uh based on the organization like the math team uh we're waiting to hear from mock trial we're waiting to hear from those organizations as to whether or not they're going to have a program if they're having a virtual program then we will have we'll appoint an advisor and we'll have our students participate but right now activities such as the literary magazine on society uh debate club school newspaper robotics these are activities that we can uh put into effect immediately i know teachers have been promoting it already and will be officially appointing the uh advisers for those activities at our um board meeting next week so i will send a copy out to the board uh within the next day or so since i just discussed it with the personnel meeting again if there are any um parents who are viewing the board meeting tonight and you know of new registrants to the district please let them know that we are registering students they can call my office for an appointment and then we will register them there is a 14-day waiting period for new students coming into the district so that we quarantine those students from the day that a person fills out the initial application they have to wait 14 days if they want to go hybrid and be in person in school if they want to be remote then once their residency is verified they can go remote but we want to be safe and wait the 14 days for students that are entering our building who are new to our district yes so we're we're providing a lot of that stuff so in the uh in the elementary schools as an example at the end of the day custodians are doing a deeper clean sanitizing the buildings so the next morning when students come in the first group i'll call it group a everything is sanitized at lunchtime when that group leaves we have custodians teacher aides and lunch aides sanitizing every classroom between the hour of 11 30 and 12 30 the hours so that the next group that comes in in the afternoon has a classroom that's sanitized the district is providing all of the spray we have hand sanitizers in every classroom if they're not excuse me the board of education is paid for um all of the hand sanitizers that are on the walls we have a hand sanitizer in every classroom we're paying for that we're refilling all of that every day there's hand sanitizers as you enter every doorway in every building the spray bottles that are used to clean the desks in middle school and high school we're providing the pump spray for all classrooms we're refilling those you know some teachers might feel comfortable bringing in their own wipes or some may have even asked students to bring in extras just as an extra but we're supplying everything that's yeah yeah and we and we're keeping up with making sure that we always have a stock of sanitizing spray or the sanitizer that you put in the pumps things like that okay i mentioned the opening of school and i thank everyone for things going very very well parents should just download the cliffside park app for updated information and refer to our website today was the first day of our grab and go lunch at the high school for students who are all remote so for student is all remote and they want to pick up five days of a breakfast and a lunch they can do so wednesday afternoons from four until 5 30.

placed in the seventh grade spanish classes when entering back into the district now they are only allowed they are not allowed sorry now they are not allowed to take that spanish class they're only allowed and offered two 20-minute mini spanish lessons in their social studies class there is no policy or written district directive yet students are not allowed to be placed in level classes the cape committee was requested to review a presentation that was led by ms hawley that was misleading and inconclusive as a concerned parent and a taxpayer i am requesting the board of ed to put this matter on their agenda and to make sure that our ais students are giving are given equity and the right to further their education in foreign languages when they reenter the brookfield school district thank you for listening to my plea as a parent and as a taxpayer this is something that the ais is strongly urging that you guys put back on your agenda because it has been overlooked and affecting students at this time thank you okay thank you um eric do you want me to hunt are you going to do it you know i just i just remembered that i gave you the co-host ability but uh the next the next anyone else here for public comment i'm just gonna take a second to see if we have any other phone numbers on here i don't think so okay okay so i think we're going to move on um up first we have the introduction of certified staff members all i want to make sure right everybody hear me okay very good so this is john burroughs superintendent of schools um we're going to be introducing our new certified staff members tradition here in brookfield we're really excited to introduce a incredible cadre of talented new staff who uh certified staff members and so i'd like to start with mr velanda hey john john you're not on you're not on the you're not on man i don't hear you through this i don't hear you can you hear me now i can hear you now okay so we're going to start again this is john burrell superintendent of schools um we have a tradition each year at our uh opening board meeting after school starts to have our principals introduce our new certified staff members and we're really excited to be here uh like many years uh we have a cadre of staff members and we're so happy to introduce them and each principal introduce those new teachers and i will start with melanda from the high school mr bolando please take it away all right thank you uh dr barrel i did notice also that mr murphy's microphone is on too which is causing an echo i don't know if there's a way to turn that off it also doesn't help um so i'll start by first of all um introducing and and we have a a small number this year compared to what we've had in previous years um so we're excited about that retention we've kept a lot of people on board but we're so excited to welcome uh three new staff members two of which i see are on the zoom now i will check to see if the third one's there um but joining our math department um we have a new math teacher uh his name is isa and he's i'm not sure where he is on everybody's screen but issa if you can give a wave and and say hello there's isa um hello perfect well done well done isa thank you um also i did see in one of these let me slide through all my screens here and see if i can find him um he was here yeah there he is okay there he is um so joining our english department we have a teacher um we had a teacher that retired after 26 years in brookfield high school and um andrew steinbeiser is replacing uh trish o'connor um he's done a great job we're so lucky to have him on board and let me tell you he's already working late hours i saw his car there pretty late the other day so ranjo say hello and welcome hi everyone really honored to be here and the third person i have joins us in the stem department his name is phil mcardle i'm not sure that he is on i don't necessarily see him as i scroll through my list of people but phil does join us he is our our long distance recruit we actually interviewed him uh via zoom from england so um we're very proud of that um he's jumped right in was ready to start day one uh so it's been an amazing transition we're really happy to have phil mcardle teaching physics and um earthen energy essentials so that's my new certified staff thank you mr velanda i really appreciate you introducing everyone and welcome i'm going to turn it over now to the whiskaner middle school principal mr dean renda and we're going to forgive mr randa ahead of time for the lengthy list go ahead mr renda i have to apologize at the beginning too my son is actually in his band class right now so you may hear a little bit of the trombone going um i am very excited to introduce our new staff members we did have a longer list i think when we did the uh with all the brookfield staff um but i have five uh teachers that i'm gonna introduce to you in fifth grade we had three new literacy teachers one hello everyone and that's all i got tonight john thank you dean much appreciated nice job thank you and welcome everybody it's great to see all of you here tonight um i'd like to turn it over now to mrs lavroshano the proud principal of huckleberry hill hi everyone good evening so we did have a busy hiring season at huckleberry we actually hired a lot of staff for our special education and our is one of our special education resource teachers hey everybody very nice to be here nice to meet you and i'm not sure if uh shayna stebbins was able to join us this evening but she is our new es elc special education teacher so that's our new members all right thank you mrs labrashono welcome everybody great to see you all tonight um thank you very much and now we're going to turn it over to mrs diamond from center elementary school go ahead mrs diamond good evening everyone um we have two new members of our central school team that we're so proud of and happy to join have joining us um first we have erin goff who is joining us as our music teacher hi everyone it's nice to be here aaron was hired like the jfp she joined and uh um and we also have our first grade teacher alicia macbeth with us this evening hi everyone i'm so happy to be here alicia is also a parent of students in the sk in the system and comes with lots of experience and also hit the ground running has been working with us all summer so we're very happy to have them with us thank you thank you so much mrs diamond greatly appreciated uh again welcome everybody and it's just so nice to see everybody tonight um i also um in these incredibly unusual circumstances have to thank mrs cavanaugh the hr department and all of our school teams for all of the work they did in hiring such great staff thank you terry you give a big wave there i see you there terry thanks for being with us and uh thanks to all the teams at the schools and the hr department and all the support work that went on to uh to make it all happen um i'm gonna turn it back over now to mrs fernandez and actually i'm going to turn it right back over to you uh for the opening day report or from our teacher or for the building principles yes thank you mrs fernandez so we'll start where we left off and go right to mrs diamond and we'll talk about we typically uh in brookfield each year uh we're doing kind of an opening day report uh opening week report so it's been about a week now and uh we've had a full rotation through our cohort a and cohort b um again in his most unusual start to a school year mrs diamond can you tell us a little bit about how things are going to start the year sure um so as you know i'm mary rose diamond proud principal of center school and i'm happy to be here this evening to share some information about our unusual yet fantastic start to the school year um it's become a habit of mine to introduce myself with the principle um but this year i feel more than ever before that we're proud really applies to so many of the situation that we've we've kind of found ourselves in over the last six months um i'm so proud of our community and how they pull together to support our schools i'm proud of our students for how well then how quickly they've adjusted to our new procedures and plans that we put in place and for demonstrating our school expectations of being safe being kind of being responsible pretty much throughout the the you know the entire week or so that we've been in i'm very proud of our parents and guardians and families for their commitment to partnering with everyone at the school in support of their children for the sacrifices they've made to ensure that their students have what they need and for the patients that they've exercised amid our new constant of change and i'm also so incredibly proud of our staff for bravely delving into synchronous learning for doing an absolutely amazing job of connecting with their students and providing an exceptional learning experience i was i've been able to be in in in some classrooms and and we have you know literally four five and six-year-olds that are building those foundations not only in math reading and writing but also in technology and problem solving um and and just it's going to help them be better thinkers and learners as they you know kind of code through the brookfield schools um and our our staff have just really demonstrated a great amount of grace under pressure so um you know just this afternoon i participated in a zoom meeting with a teacher um a parent who um speaks uh not a native english speaker um and it was amazing to see that the teacher and there was there were two teachers there supporting this this um this parent um and the parent just saying again and again how much he just wants to help his child so like seeing that partnership um even via technology and through all the challenges and the interpreter and all those things that we had to make to happen i had to do to make it happen really again made me feel incredibly proud um so our enrollment and center school has fluctuated greatly over the last few months we've had students moving in and out and as families plans have changed but as of today all of our classes are comfortably within the board of education's guidelines for class size and we continue to process enrollment so we are um at in in our kindergarten kindergarten enrollment is always a question we have 136 students currently enrolled in kindergarten our projection was 176 so we are off of that projection obviously because of kind of our situation we're in um but we again we continue to process uh registrations and that kind of thing um that was a big huge thing for us this year the online registration process um which i i can't uh i can't um continue without saying how proud i am also of lisa ruggles and claire dennis savage our secretaries for all the work that they did and working hand-in-hand with denise walsh um the district data coordinator to build the system from scratch and make it work um so that was a there was a huge undertaking that they that they've been um that they've been taking managing um and doing it all while also connecting with families and making everyone feel like they're part of center school so um it's really been a great thing to see um as we look ahead to kind of what uh is promising to be a year full of ups and downs and changes and adjustments and all of those things that we've been dealing with um we're really trying to remain focused on three things that's first building connections with our students and families um so that we can preserve the special sense of community that's at the heart of center school keeping students safe and healthy by uh vigorously adhering to the guidelines and procedures that we put in place uh and making sure that all students learn um we are resolute in our commitment to making sure that students are learning is accelerated uh and utilizing all the tools and resources that we have that have been provided by the community and the board of education uh and our knowledge base of our staff to make sure that we are we are making sure that students learn that we're not letting them uh slip through the cracks no one no one is going to uh to not to escape center school without having the skills that they need in order to be successful if they move forward um so just a couple i know we all have the same kind of thank you when it gets to this this point of the year um if we've kind of made it through the beginning so central office to dr brill dr ruby uh mrs farias mrs wygonic and mr post for all their support um in preparing for the start um as i mentioned earlier our office staff lisa ruggles and claire denis savage and beth o'connor our nurse who has been amazing in terms of helping to guide us through all of these this uncharted territory uh this year um our custodians barbara fuller steve toth uh frank cardero and mike mcgasty um for making the building really keeping it uh shining and beautiful for us every day um dan caldwell um and and joe and now we have brian on board i think too so really for their help from preparing the building deb jones who has been absolutely amazing at the bus company managing all the changes back and forth um with that that kind of have come up over the last couple weeks uh major buckley's and um officer grambling for helping out with our arrival dismissal and procedures and that kind of thing uh parks and rec i want to give a big shout out to them dan came and he the day before school started painted the lines we needed they bought special colored paint for us they just did a fantastic job um and then after we had that big rainstorm like the third day of school they came back and did it again so um they really were just excellent and then lastly brenda kuiper was our pto president um and the whole pto for all the support that they've given us the the items that they've purchased to help us start the year um and just just in general they've been fantastic so um it really has been unusual uh continues to be unusual um but it's been great to be together and have school open and really um be able to to kind of come together as a team and a family so it's been a great start thank you mary rose really appreciate that and boy a lot of great energy there i'd also like to thank you for all of your hard work and not only your leadership of center school but your leadership and support of our team all summer long and the great work that all of us have been able to do together and you were a big part of that so thank you like to turn it over now to mrs lavrochano the proud principal of huckleberry hill tell us how the first week went hey everyone i love following mary rose because she is able to give all the thank yous especially all the names of tso and everyone so i do want to just start by simply saying thank you everyone too many people to list for supporting me and our staff and students through this reopening journey the list goes on and on and i truly appreciate you all so at huckleberry we did welcome four new certified members who met tonight and also a paraprofessional sandy palace who's coming back to us from wisconsin middle school there was so much excitement and nerves regarding the opening of school it truly wasn't opening like no other there was so much more anticipation and we really did not know what to expect teachers are amazing human beings having the eight days of professional development prior to the start of the school year was truly a gift staff really were like sponges learning as much as they could in preparing their classrooms for their new students as a building principal it has been amazing to watch the school year unfold as you all know all of us worked very hard over the summer to get school up and running for the first day and there is something to be very proud of the way we all accomplished a great reopening we are still learning and navigating our new normal together and with each day adjustments are made i'm just very proud of the staff at huckleberry hill when i got home after the first day i was absolutely exhausted i'm sure everyone was and being that it was tuesday and knowing we would be welcoming a new batch of students on thursday all i kept thinking was i was living in the movie groundhog day the kids were so excited to be back and have been wonderful following new protocols and procedures the students are so sweet and personally i love greeting them every single morning overall whether students are in person or remote they are super happy to be back in the midst of it all we did welcome 40 new students and of course all of our second graders to huckleberry i have received a lot of positive feedback that the transition to huckleberry has been easier than anticipated over the summer teachers got together and crafted a six-week plan a welcome back to school unit which included ruler lessons technology lessons and procedural lessons our focus this year more than ever is to build positive relationships and connections with our students and i want to thank our families for their continued support patience positive emails and phone calls it means so much to all of us at huckleberry so it's been a great start so far thanks melissa it really sounds great and really appreciate those uh incredible incredibly uh appreciative words and uh reflective words it really yeah there's a lot that's gone into the planning and preparation i'm just so glad it's gone so smoothly it didn't it didn't happen without a lot of hard work from you and your team i'd like to turn it over now to mr renda at wisconsin middle school how are things going over there mr renda am i on all right welcome um as we all know this by far is one of the craziest and angst-filled years we've ever had to start a school year and i've been coming to brookfield schools as a teacher for 26 years and by far this is one of the craziest i have to say uh echo what mrs diamond said about it just i'm so proud to say that i'm part of the brookfield school district and just really appreciative of everyone that has come together to make this possible for all of our students um i'm going to start off with thanks uh thanks going out to deb jones at all star again for working with us and making our for those of you who have a wms student our new bus drop off and pick up as smooth as it could be along with uh officer flynn really really uh worried about that at the beginning that it was gonna be um a debacle to say the least and it's been uh it's been uh run very smoothly so that's a good thing all of our custodians are especially our head custodian dennis heil for getting us up and running shuffling around all the furniture in the classrooms uh setting up student desk shields and doing a lot of these things you know last minute and moving things back and forth to make sure that that first day was perfect for all the students so thanks to those uh all of our custodians our nurses uh anna leforge and patty richards for taking on and dealing with all of these as you know the new health and medical guidelines and plans that have been mandated by the state and also the health department uh the questions we've had for them have been endless and they've done an amazing job helping us out and making our staff feel uh comfortable to all of the secretaries at wms dealing with me and all the craziness that was thrown uh their way um like scheduling uh miss usco had to actually rebuild the whole schedule she had worked on at the end of the school year and over the beginning of summer um we had to rebuild all of that to be able to make sure that we had it right when we started school with diane sarasota and our purchase orders that we have and um ordering of our supplies with uh donna gullen's registration and online it was a new registration online process and bob mccarthy and obviously um eric for all the technology requests and so much more that uh had to go into making this the beginning such a great start uh and a special thanks to my secretary mary liz for keeping me sane and organizing organizing me because i know i'd be lost without her to our my aps mr bernard ms gordon and all of our district building administrators and central office staff all the um people also that maybe didn't get mentioned yet i want to just thank to terry with uh human resources with beth and michelle uh joan and um um ken uh for helping out hoy and heather also in payroll and of course uh lisa grambling um who i'm sure uh dr burrill will thank tremendously um for all the countless hours that they were put in to make it all possible to open our doors last week i feel like we broke records with the amount of text that we went back and forth over the summer and leading up to school to our board of ed members the brookfield community to the parents and families and most importantly the students that have trusted us in us to do what is right understanding that this was not an easy task and to me the most important thing is being patient and flexible as we made our way through this new path i really want to point out the students that have been so understanding and intolerant even though almost everything at wms is so much different than ever before especially now where they are in the same class all day with the same few students like they were in elementary school i know one of the exciting things of coming to wms is always when students get to move around and get to be in classes with different students they're not getting that chance right now walking single file down the hallways is something that's that's new at wisconier also just being so patient as our staff made its way through the glitches we have have every once in a while while you know with the technology or the zoom meetings and letting students in because we have to take attendance for every single class that's that's all different for us i know i was in numerous classes and even on zoom classes where the students were just amazing amazing and even offering us technology us us as the staff and teachers offering us technology tips which always makes me laugh they know more than us uh lastly to my wisconier staff and all the brookfield staff who pulled together to make this happen at wms everyone pretty much is on a cart as teachers rotate into their rooms with their materials their anchor charts their computers and sometimes multiple monitors everyone's on a car some looking like they're performing at a concert with their microphones all to make this the best experience for their kids the first week getting to know the students and going through the expectations and creating our classroom charters has been especially important as we know there was and still is a roller coaster of emotions with starting a new school year and with everything that we know is going on in society at this time we've tried to put a focus on our social emotional approach to learning utilizing the ruler tools that i know we've spoken about before just to kind of help in this process and just to continue to keep that positive mindset and upbeat vibes at wms because i think it's really i've i've noticed just a vibe in this school that's been really awesome to see and i hope has really helped our students to feel at home at wms numbers we have a 790 students at this time we had 40 new students come to wms as far as brazil we had 12 students move away or withdraw from schools so we're about to net 28 students at wisconsin this year and lastly um i just wanted to tell and uh uh dr brill will laugh because i always have a story he says my story is that i got a text from my father asking me to call him because he was worried about me after the first day i called and asked what do you what are you talking about and he told me my mother had heard from a friend who has a granddaughter at wms that the student felt bad for me and was worried about me because my face was all red and i had to yell at parents as i was doing parent pickup i told them that my my face was probably red um probably from being overweight um but from being so hot and i was yelling just to keep the traffic moving but also as people know i was having fun with it i told them that there's nothing to worry about and although i do feel like a little kid where my parents still know everything i'm doing i guess so it never ends but thank you again to everyone for everything they put in to make this uh start of the school year so successful i appreciate it thank you thanks so much dean that was great and you didn't let me down with a little story thank you very much wise words from a wise man really appreciated dean thanks a lot and let's hope your face isn't red the rest of the year mr bellanda how about you tell us about brookfield high school and how things are going sure thing i want to say to uh melissa you think it's hard to follow mary rose it's even harder to be the last one to go you've thanked everybody you know i i there's so many people that i certainly want to thank and and i'll highlight some of them as well as we we go on i'll probably do that towards the end but um a different start to brookfield high school than we've ever had it was certainly a different end last year with graduation uh and it definitely led right into a crazy start of the school year um i i think it's just been it's i'm so amazing i'll tell you that when the staff came that first day of professional development and i had them out in the bleachers you know socially distanced and the look on their faces is where it's like we're doing this this is gonna happen um over the course of those next eight days you could see i got people saying it's i feel a little better than i did the day before a little bit a little better and then once the kids come back it really does change your perspective i think as an educator um we were we could not wait to have the kids come back and was so glad to see them in the building even it was some of them whether they're in person or even on zoom um you know meeting classes for the first time in high school um sometimes the first time you saw a student as a teacher was on online which was so different than it was in the spring when we had to go to this model but i've been so impressed that you know really starting with the students and their flexibility they have jumped right into it we have an online pass system that we're working out that there's plenty of kinks um they're so great it's nothing they've ever had to do before they've got to go to a signed bathroom they're not complaining they're doing it um and they're really doing it because i think they realize that the better we do this the sooner we can all be back in school and they're really enjoying the you know the the camaraderie and being together um so that's and then in the classes they're being flexible and you know sometimes there's five kids in front of you and then there's another 12 online and they're just running with it which is amazing you know i think as principals as administrators in the district we get a lot of people saying oh i don't want your job it must be hard and it is but you know all the prep work that we've done leading up to now now it's been in the hands of teachers since day one and the support staff the paraprofessionals the people whose jobs have changed significantly since we started and they're doing it they're it just it never ceases to amaze me you know they're the ones working so hard it's not that we're not working hard but they day-to-day have to implement all the things that we put into place and trust me it's a lot of things that we put in place across each of these buildings that we were expecting teachers and support staff to now do so it's amazing with teachers parents um as well being flexible and understanding you know from the different emails i sent an email out on on a friday at like five o'clock with you know the wrong date in it and people are you know you sent the wrong date out and like oh my bleary-eyed i'm not i screwed that up i'm so sorry um but parents are understanding um you know sifting through emails i've got a couple emails where they said it's really hard to sift through all the emails we've been getting whether it be from teachers or district but they're working through it and they're being patient which is amazing and particularly at drop-off and arrival i'll tell you the first day of school i was convinced we were not going to start normally the first period starts at 7 15.

i don't think yet today we got a number right in terms of having i haven't heard from a cat she's gonna text me about seven o'clock okay so today was the first day i sent out notifications to the app i did a swift reach we posted it on instagram and i think once the word gets around that uh students and parents can come to the high school on wednesdays these are the all remote students they can pick up a five-day supply of a breakfast or a lunch so that they have it all week students who come into school every day are getting a grab-and-go lunch every student is getting a grab-and-go breakfast and a grab-and-go lunch that they bring home so that the next day they can have the breakfast before they come in and they can have a lunch when they when they go home this way there's no eating in school and that eliminates a lot of the issues with sanitizing the classroom after students eat things like that so there's there's no eating going on in school which we find to be a safer environment so that seems to be running very very well the grab and go okay at this point if there are no other questions i'd like to ask our board if there are any committee reports uh yeah just uh i'd like to go over uh building grounds i know tomorrow our boiler project that number three school and uh number five school is moving along i'm pretty sure uh mr alfano can interject we're almost three quarters of the way completed there uh we're having a zoom meeting with the architect and uh the boiler contractor tomorrow at 11 o'clock uh and uh that's going well there um middle school bleachers we had gone out and gotten uh bids for uh middle school replacement bleachers and at that time we came in within under our budget but we realized that as the project was moving forward uh starting to order everything and get everything ready uh we had specified plastic bleachers as you know in the middle school in the new building they're they're wood and we decided that you know what we should stick with wood we've done some evaluations it's much better with the wood bleachers than plastic bleachers for durability slipping et cetera all these kind of factors so i believe it was the same manufacturer that did our floors correct correct yeah and and then we we spoke to him and he recommended that well maybe you want to do a change order and go to wood and we asked him for a proposal on the change order and believe it or not it came within our below our sixty five thousand dollar budget we budgeted sixty five thousand uh plastic was around forty if i'm not mistaken well yeah he came in originally at about 39 and changed right but the other contractors who had plastic they were around 64 65 right so even with the wood we're slightly below the other contractors who were at plastic so with wood we're going to get 63 000 correct to pull and replace exactly what we have and we thought we were going to save some money but in the long run we still came uh under our uh budget and i just wanted to make everybody aware and i think i hope everybody's comfortable with that we're going to stick with the wood it's the way to go i know a lot of new facilities have been going plastic kind of excited to think about it but then looking at some other facilities looking at the wood we have and talking to some athletic directors and some facility managers and they all recommend it stick with the wood you can't go wrong it's easy to repair etc so uh that's the decision we made and we still are way below our budget by two thousand dollars so uh that's pretty much it uh finance committee did meet this evening uh i'm on that committee also we're just uh like every year uh mr alfano gives us uh a list of some potential capital improvement projects for 2021-22 uh we did uh have some dialogue uh on a spreadsheet that he presented to us and we will uh digest that in next month and as the months go on before we introduce the budget we'll have a better idea of what we can do and what we can do uh we are fortunate enough with the frugal uh uh spending we do here that we've done over the years i've been here 12 plus years about 15 million dollars in capital improvement projects that have not impacted the taxpayer and that's kudos to the administration here from mr roman gino mr alfano and the board so i want to thank everybody for uh their cooperation with that and hopefully 2021 will be a better year we hope that's it that's it for me okay anyone else okay so uh just a reminder that uh next week we have our public meeting uh if the public are viewing at this time next week you will have the opportunity through our website to ask questions and we'll respond to those questions if not everyone have a safe night and a motion to adjourn so moved i'll second it thank you thank you

2020-09-17 Capitol Planning Region, CT YouTube / Community Voice Channel transcript source: youtube Bolton Board of Education - September 10, 2020 · passage 2
97 expended and the commitment to go back to the town was 165 000 and we are maintaining that and projected to return 109 or sorry 165 is going to our fy 2021 budget and 194 thousand 811 is going back to the town you want to do the transfers now anne just we we committed that last year towards this year's budget i heard that part but okay that was from last year so what's remaining what we're returning is the 194 811 okay all right so um i guess the 165 000 is from last year's budget 194 is going to this year's budget yes yes yes clarifying thank you um and then uh let's do we have to we have to move on to transfers from there and then kristen are you able to go through those work if i could have just one minute to hopefully come back on and then i could be online i apologize but it just automatically shut down okay so we're waiting on kristen to um have her computer come back up again and then she will review the transfers laura just pop my computer right in front of you for a second i'm okay okay it's coming up right now okay okay can you hear me okay sorry about that so uh we had a number of transfers in june um we had transfers to the first one is covering some pd training about focused on empowering students in distance learning we had to cover uh verizon unlimited data and hot spots for those families we provided hot spots too that did not have internet access so that their children could access education from home the transfer to cover uh some office supplies the maintenance supplies at fulton high school and center school a document camera purchase of chromebooks which you guys had done those transfers you may recall last year but were just for purposes of transparency showing them there uh we purchased um some tables adjustable tables um for because we knew that we were going to have to be socially distancing and we did not have any furniture at holton center school to be able to spread students out so we purchased some more tables a lot of ppe you will see there um the shortfall uh in some math training or rather science training for one of our teachers and then several components to high school graduation which as you know was virtual and outside at the mansfield drive-in so we had pieces uh to cover that as well and then lastly we had an instructional supply shortfall of 32 in music any questions correct end of last year correct yes correct yep so you guys will just need to um approve these transfers from june and then we'll move on to this year's budget in july and august so we'll need a a motion to approve the june transfer recommended by me maybe move the transfer three seconds ben and ria thank you any discussion hearing none all those in favor say aye aye aye any opposed abstentions emotion passes thank you personnel committee i'm sorry we have now the finance update for uh this year okay sorry i jumped ahead okay and you want to talk about how yeah sure so um for fy 2021 july and august um we are currently seven percent expended um and we have some transfers to review thank you so many of these transfers are either reclassifications or have to do with covid so the first one is uh supplies that we bought for pe to uh sort of create to go to go kits for our pe students at center school the next one is a reclassification to purchase teaching reading virtual resources for every grade at center school the next one is an online subscription for the web accounting software program to support uh the bolton high school activity account we have a reclassification fund music textbooks for ap music theory we needed additional texts because students can't share texts any longer during kobit we had to purchase some periodicals in language arts line again that's just a a need that we had for kobit reclassification to purchase science school gizmos license for science teachers they there was money in their budget but we had to reclass it from one section of the budget to another a music first subscription again a need to allow for online pieces for music purchase a visual experience ebook class set with davis art for art at the high school so that could also be virtual uh reclass from tax benefits to other benefits to cover hsa and flex administration fees we had pe cobia supplies a re-class to purchase additional instructional music supplies another covid purchase is music wind instrument masks they're special masks a special slit in it um to reduce the aerosol particles during performances we had to uh purchase some family and consumer science online resources for under covid an online uh french text god bless you uh under covid spanish online text again under cobid french and latin texts or online text again for under covid uh cuda works uh which allows students to complete math tasks on chromebooks we purchased that subscription under kobid we had a reclassification for the wireless mics that we've purchased for teachers that aren't in yet but we are anxiously awaiting them uh just to help with voice projection when they're wearing masks so particularly the remote learners and honestly even the kids in the room can hear them better reclassification for the pe teachers mics and speakers to be heard when wearing their masks by remote learners in the gym and outside and then we had uh usb document cameras we purchased those to work with the chromebooks so teachers could be taking pictures and demonstrating that and showing the students things and then we had a reclassification of the ct chip administration piece for the health insurance collaborative casal created its own line before that inform that number was buried in our insurance number and we felt that it was just better to pull it out and have it be its own standalone line so we reclassified that so we know exactly what our fees are so a lot of these seem to be almost one to one reclassifications from a like item to a like item but a lot of them also are very specifically related to the covid situation correct so i appreciate that we're able to do that at this point obviously at some point if these expenses continue there won't be anything to borrow from or to has there have been any conversations with the town with regard to the contingency that was in the budget and when and how that's going to be maybe accessed for coded related expenses so not at this time we have done a lot of examination of our current budgets and looked at you know what we had projected we would be using those monies for right last fall and january before we presented to the board and before you approve the budget and staff has made decisions at this point you know that we really need this right now we really need these online pieces and we don't need this because if we were all in person and all here and everything we're like it used to be we would have needed that but now we need this so at this point um we don't feel that we need to go have that conversation yet we also have unfortunately several unfilled positions we have two special education unfilled positions and we have one math unfilled position one special edit center school one special ed at the high school and one math position at the high school so we're actualizing savings as we speak on those positions both in health benefits and in salary those positions are posted currently we do not have viable candidates for those positions both are areas of durational shortage in the state of connecticut we also have five open paraprofessional positions which we currently do not have viable candidates either you know and how much of it is people don't want to take a job in a school system during covid or they don't want to leave their current job at the start of the school year or during kobit you know it's hard to say it could be all of those things and more um so and we had a number of new hires as you know um where we had some savings in in both salary and health benefits so at this time i feel that we are able to manage that to your point that could change um but at this point i'm hoping that we're going to simply be able to manage it and potentially not have to go for an ask and that's today september 10th right fair question though i think chris had a question yes thank you uh the air conditioning at the center school is that has that come out of the regular operations budget yes so right now that hit john's budget and as has ppe right which we didn't budget for nor did we budget for the rental of air conditioning at center school we have been awarded up to ninety four thousand dollars from the state for ppe and other health and safety related purchases the state put out information then they put out a revised set of information because how that was determined was superintendents received a survey over the summer a couple of times where we were asked to put information in and i think you know it was people's best guess at the time what things might cost right so there were several situations where there were two communities of the same size in particular i know of two in the western part of the state and one received eight hundred thousand dollars for ppe and one received eighty thousand they're right next to each other and they're the same size so a lot of attention was brought to that by superintendents across the state about the inequities that occurred in this listing so initially my understanding was it was simply going to be a grant given to districts now it is a drawdown so we're going to have to provide documentation i think of some kind i received an email at close to noon today that information will be coming shortly on how this process is going to work the money has to be drawn down by the 31st of december so that money will go back in if you will to john's budget right to cover the cost of the air conditioning and the ppe and the cleaning supplies and you know all of those pieces that we have done the the the um the desk shields right that we have for the kids that we have for the students and the plexiglas that we put up for all of the um admin assistants and administrators and and all of those different kinds of things so i would expect hopefully that next month you're going to see hopefully you know i say that we've been waiting weeks for this information from the state to tell us how this is going to work so on some level we're at that their mercy for that so but we're ready to go we've coded things as you can see right to covid and where we can now these online resources and things like that i don't think that that doesn't fall in that category because there was a listing today of potential things that would be covered but i believe from what i read and i sent it to both ann and andrew that it certainly would appear to me that the air conditioning because that's about the air quality in the school which was the reason why we rented it because we couldn't have fans oscillating and blowing air in which is how we've normally handled air at building center school um so you know colombia has already called an early release day this week because they didn't rent air conditioning and i i didn't want us to be in a position to have to be calling half days or no school at all particularly when we're in a hybrid model and kids have such limited time with their teachers for you know time for learning in the classroom so did that answer your question yes thank you anybody else okay uh this is chris i'll make a motion to approve the july and august transfers second ben any questions or discussion all those in favor aye aye aye any opposed abstentions motions carried um any report from personnel committee andrew is here sue he's just logging on so hey you can you can give the first note we pass the baton back yes all right i've been asked to give the personnel update um personnel committee has met via zoom uh several times in august to discuss the teacher contract that we will be discussing during executive session later this evening and that concludes my report okay um vhs student representatives are they on there they are jack emily sorry okay um the school opened in a hybrid learning format which went well in the first two weeks biggs and littles had their first virtual event last friday which also went well and each freshman got paired with an upperclassman and that helped them get adapted to high school by having people that they know around excellent thank you jack those sports started up last wednesday with cross country boys and girls soccer and volleyball practicing with some precautions and as of right now the games are scheduled to start for early october so a lot of people are looking forward to that and seniors are getting their capstone projects approved right now and they're starting to they're starting the common app to apply to colleges and the guidance counselors have been really helpful in that process and the sats are also coming up in early october so they're just around the corner for seniors and then the first week of school went really smoothly and everyone is excited to be back in person and i think the mystery has done a pretty good job of keeping the environment safe and the teachers have also done a good job at keeping teaching both the kids in class and online simultaneously and making the transition seamless thank you um is andrew back on yet he's here with me yes okay so is he going to take over the end okay we're at community reports um do we have any reports no i guess we turn things right over to christian for superintendent schools report thank you so i'm going to first thank our administrators our teachers and our staff who work so hard to ensure the safe and happy return of our students to school i also want to thank our kids because we're really happy to see them and have them our staff is absolutely amazing and i am so proud to work with such dedicated and caring people we kicked off the first day back to school for staff on tuesday august 25th with convocation and the theme was building connections and knowing your why i shared with staff that anything we can do to help each other and our students meet the need for connection also helps us as individuals we will lift our own spirits as we lift the spirits of our friends colleagues and students and in doing so we will bring out the best in each other because we are in this together the power of building and sustaining connections for us as educators and staff members who support the work of teaching and learning i believe is directly linked to knowing your why together on zoom we watched a video from michael jr who reminded us that when you know your why your what has more impact because you are walking in and toward your purpose staff are asked to take a moment to reflect on their why the why that leads you towards your purpose the why you showed up today the why your work matters because after all every one of us makes a difference for our students staff were then asked to use the chat feature to share their why mr miceli read each why and it was a very very powerful and important reminder of why we are part of the development of our most precious resource our children we utilize the six professional development days prior to the start of school to focus on mandatory safety and other trainings planning for the first units working in plc's developing google classrooms with links for students and parents equity cultural diversity and anti-racism professional development which i'm going to talk about a little bit further in a minute in addition i also shared the new bolton public schools 2020 2025 strategic plan with all staff in spite of all the challenges we are facing in schools due to the pandemic we had a very positive opening to the 2020-2021 school year on august 31st all teachers paraprofessionals and administrators participated in part one of a multi-part professional learning series on equity cultural diversity and anti-racism offered by crack this first training was titled if you are human you are biased during the two-hour virtual meeting participants explored the concepts of unconscious bias and engaged in self-exploration to recognize our own biases having identified personal biases and the impact of microaggressions we then learn strategies to overcome preset or unconscious reactions and ways to respond that reflect on our conscious beliefs and values during early release days throughout the year teachers will attend three more trainings focused on diversity culture and school-based strategies correct will be personalizing this training to meet the needs and questions of our bolton staff in addition to the teacher-specific training the leadership team of administrators and teacher leaders will attend leadership-focused workshops focused on leading for equity any questions for me all right seeing none i'm going to turn it over to mr g yard all right good evening everybody the first graphic here is one of the percentage of students at bcs that have chosen to go fully remote which means they're not coming to school on the hybrid days they're going to be doing all their learning from home there's a total of 101 students of 485 which is 21 of the school that chose to learn remote and you can see in the graphic it kind of ranges from 13 all the way up to 31 at another grade level with an average of 21 percent across the board they're learning remotely next slide uh the opening of school the first week was a extreme success i would say uh the first two days of september second and third saw the buster group on wednesday and the bulldog group on thursday uh as superintendent said it was just amazing to see the students back in the building even though in reduced numbers getting off the buses walking the halls coming to school it truly was amazing the half days were full of time spent reviewing safety procedures watching the safety videos that were sent out to the school community earlier in the month making students make sure they're set up with their technology with the chromebooks their different platform forms with their passwords so that when they go home they're able to log in and helping students get set up with their classroom materials because they're not sharing materials so students have more materials at their desks have more containers with their materials so making sure they're set up with their shields and all their materials and then it was lunch it was time to go home so the half days went by quickly but they were used very efficiently by the staff to make sure the students were set up for learning uh the first learning from home day was last friday and the students had a scheduled class time to meet with their teachers it was shortened to about 15-20 minutes for each class period but we wanted to get students used to logging in from home so we have our learning from home wednesdays we'll know how to do that the feedback from staff at the staff meeting later in the day on friday was that the virtual meetings were very well attended by students which was great to hear more so than in the spring we have full days this week with the buster group had come in on tuesday and wednesday and the bulldog group is thursday and friday of this week the full days are going well and we're starting to get into our groove with the students at home and with the students that we have in person the arrival and dismissal procedures for the school changed a little bit this year because we switched the whole school to one arrival and one dismissal that has gone well a video was sent home to families explaining the procedures uh last month and we've had to make a few tweaks since then and superintendent hecht has been amazing she's been uh a crossing guard since school began in the elementary science so she's had some great feedback we sent out another message to parents today letting them know of another change the staff students and parents have been great about following all the safety procedures on school grounds like truly amazing we have painted six feet markings on the sidewalks wearing masks watching hands uh we're able to successfully practice some of our safety drills this week uh modified but in accordance to addendum 8 from the connecticut state department of education all of our drills have been very successful we've had three so far this week and we have one more drill tomorrow because we want to make sure we do fire drills and lockdown drills with both cohorts of students um yeah so a very successful opening of school and uh the staff and the students are excited to be back in the building thank you mr jared any questions for mr jiren uh what what percentage of students are not coming on the bus or what percentage are coming out um i have bus duty so when i go on the buses i'd say on average you see on any given bus anywhere from about six to ten students that's probably the best way i can answer that for you so what but the when you took you probably took a survey of parents right at the beginning or in the summer so what percentage of parents said they weren't going to or they were going to take their students to school or their kids to school it was a high percentage that we're going to drive them in and part of our reopening plan was we were encouraging parents to drive their students to school so i think it was just a personal choice plus our encouraging them so the numbers are lower but i've actually seen a little bit of an uptick since last week okay so you're saying like they're about six to eight students on the six to ten students on a bus that holds 20 30 students or i think the bus capacity is about 70.

um i was convinced we were gonna be starting class at eight o'clock when i looked down on my watch and saw 7 20 and everybody was in the building already parents students ready to it was unbelievable and same thing at dismissal it gets smoother and smoother every day so it's just been wonderful in terms of you know the arrival lunch has been such a change for our students um lunch tradition used to be at tables and now we're at student desks individual student desks in the cafeteria we've exercised once so far the alfresco dining option where you can go into the courtyard um and mrs diamond i'm not sure you must have a much better relationship with park and rec when i said you know i need some help painting x's i got a can of spray paint and a thing they came and did it for you twice they just given it to me and so we did it we took care of it but the little ones need need that more support so i'm glad that they're there to help you but park and rec has been great to work with to help get things ready to go uh we've also introduced um the caffeination so that when students uh if it's not so it's great weather or it's been a little wet in the grass outside we've transitioned them into the gymnasium uh mr baldwin's been great to help us kind of transform that space into a socially distant um lunch room um for all the things that are going on our kids our staff they're they're following all the rules the the state of the right the best of possible it's hard it's not easy i know the arrows remind them but sometimes they forget but they're great gentle reminders and they're right back to it so um it has been just really it's hard to believe that you know we're already two weeks into school essentially it feels like um you know we started a week ago but uh i would always tell staff there's plenty of time left before school starts it seemed like there wasn't going to be and it felt like sometimes we could use it as an excuse to say there's not enough time before school starts but i would say oh it's it's only it's only monday we got plenty of time you know school starts tomorrow we'll make it happen there's a lot of time 24 hours in the day to make it happen so it's been it's been amazing um you know just a little bit about numbers uh certainly i won't go as in depth as dean did but i can tell you where generally we have this big bubble class come in from eighth grade so our ninth graders are up we're about 32 kids compared to students compared to last year um so our totals up to 902 students at brookfield high school at this time so um last year we're at 870 at the same time we're offering a couple new courses uh the second in the sequence of american sign language we have asl 2 we're working with virtual high school again to do that we have the second year of a sequence of course for ap capstone called ap research which is a fantastic class we're excited to offer that and then you know for our advanced french students we're offering french cinema which is great it's um it's a great way to explore the language and do that that way um you know i talked a little bit about the online past system we're getting new student ids we're really excited about um we're happy to be able to offer the school day s.a.t because last year our juniors who the class of 2021 were not able to take the school day s.a.t in march which is normally offered by the state department of ed we're actually going to be giving that in october um athletics unfortunately tends to be something that we're not sure it goes day to day we're currently practicing first games for some sports beginning the 28th and there's a constant debate right now about what to do with football and volleyball but that's that's to come we'll continue to have those conversations um you know dean talked about a support staff whether it's cindy wartman who was doing schedules with support by um susan griffin on my part whether it's terry park who's doing my accounting stuff and ordering things left and right and at the very last minute you know the people who get to deal with um most of the calls you know lisa genovese um carol ann dark angelo karen howe um lisa missouri in special ed roseanne school counseling gladys who has been in the kata who's been in the the library media center who's not just doing that stuff she's also helping with chromebooks kathy eric and and of course my student logan white they've been running around they can't catch a breath and today with power school issues they were they've worked non-stop and they'd really deserve so many kudos um you know and you know also i can't forget um um mary negri in athletics who's every day there's something different going on from the ciac they changed their mind they say we're doing this we're doing this now so she's been all over the place as support staff uh roberta mateer and casey scabbard honest as our nurses been managing amazing amounts of stuff from a medical perspective but i i do have to thank also nick castellano and steve brontos they're helping us in the morning making sure everything goes smoothly and then to my colleagues and not that i i i appreciate certainly dr burrell dr ruby and all the support we get from them but i have to tell you i am the worst in terms of returning text messages on our principal group chat that does exist uh between the four of us uh i don't think any one of us would have been able to make it through this summer uh without the constant text messages back and forth and understanding um yesterday i was apologizing to the group and they're making me feel it's okay mark we'll we'll be fine we'll figure it out um it really the collaborative nature of this whole thing you know for me as a leader to be able to work with such a great group of principals you know these other three people that i work with and then at central office um the collaboration just is not nonstop and it's with my teachers it's between us so i just want to thank them as well because we don't really thank each other enough but you know we're we're making this happen and i appreciate uh all of you so thank you that's great mark thanks for that report and thank you for thanking uh your principal's uh colleagues because you know we can't do this work without without great leadership and um i expressed that saying thanks as well um and really appreciate you sharing all that with us uh tonight just a couple of quick things i know i have a superintendent report but uh on the tone of uh thank yous and collaboration and uh exercising patience and flexibility one of the themes of the uh convocation this year was circling the wagons taking care of one another and genuinely loving each other loving the families loving the kids and working together to make sure we make it through i think you hear that the tone of the reports from the principals tonight and just briefly i definitely need to put a big thank you out to the board of education for all the support from them this summer it has not been an easy summer been extremely difficult extremely stressful especially knowing that you're accountable to many things that are not in your control and that's one of the most difficult things i think as leaders we all face this summer but we open the year safely and uh we're really excited about that uh in addition to that uh two groups that don't get thanked enough and they were they were briefly mentioned tonight i do have to thank the brookfield police department for all their support specifically with traffic but also with all their their advice that they give in terms of security and safety chief purcell major felicity they've been incredible uh our youth officer gary grambling uh just all of them in their leadership thank you um our fire marshal does not get enough thanks jason de sous has done a great job ensuring that our shields are in place but they're the right material they're not against fire code all the different things we're doing as a matter of fact we arranged for our nurses to be fitted for n95 masts uh today as a matter of fact so thank you jason for dr ruby and her partnership and all of her leadership uh directly as part of those text messages many times and often with our principals over the summer to make sure things were happening um uh i can't thank dr rubino for her partnership and leadership through throughout my tenure here in brookfield and especially this summer uh mr post all things finance and operations thank you um and certainly mrs wygonic with all of her work with our students with special needs uh and the supervisors and the work they have done not only through the summer with extended school year we're really having a smooth opening to the school year and really working closely with the families of some of our most vulnerable kids it has just been an incredible start and then finally our nursing coordinator anna laforgia i really do need to thank her she is kind of working hand in glove with me literally as the compliance liaison to ensure that we are meeting uh all the things we need to meet uh in these coveted times and ensure that we've opened safely so uh thanks to anna and her leadership of the nurses and liaisoning with dr sullivan and now dr davis as well as dr ferrara so at this point this portion is uh completed and i certainly will turn it over to mrs fernandez thank you and i know there's a lot of things going around but um i just have to say how appreciative um this board and me personally um we're so proud of that all of you are leading our schools and um you know as as parents and board members we are just so thoroughly impressed and um very very proud to have you guys um leading our kids and um my daughter loves going to school which is something that even in this environment um you know i'm this it's all because of you guys so thank you very very much okay um we have a student a new student representative um is that them in the waiting room eric there's one person there but i wasn't sure of the name okay cool all right so i just let time be in well let's see when they connect hi tanvi andrey shenry tonji how are you good how are you this is actually perfect timing so um i'm going to let uh dr burrell uh introduce you so welcome we are so glad to see you we know you had a busy schedule tonight and you just made it over to see us um and i know that you're not prepared with a report for this first meeting but we wanted to make sure that you were introduced and so you can meet the board members and we can all the public can meet you the whole town is watching you tommy not to make you nervous um mr belanda was there anything you wanted to share uh in terms of introducing convi that i may have missed other than you know clearly she's committed and dedicated um you know i got the email over the summer i think it was july right i think i got the email from you saying that we're ready and on board for the board of ed meeting and it kind of it slipped my mind i know not surprisingly with all the things that we're being focused on but uh we are so lucky to have her on board i've known her for the last four years um she just got out of swim practice that's why her hair is wet right um so we're it's it's exciting to have somebody who's so excited and she's been doing more than just um you know work with student council she's also involved in some diversity work which i'm sure she'll talk about at some point in time um you know we're just really blessed to have uh her on the board so i'll let her say hello introduce herself and and talk a little bit about herself thank you yeah so i'm a senior as you probably know but um yeah i've been working on like student council and like peer counseling and stuff and i've always seen like how the school works like within just brookfield high school so i was interested to see like how it works throughout the whole town so i'm excited welcome and i hope i hope you enjoy our meetings and we're really looking forward to your report next month thank you welcome tom b and yes october 7th is the next board meeting just so you know if you want to put that on
