and so out of corrections yeah thank you  okay it's that and i i meant to mention that so while we're doing this i'm i  think we send you a copy a letter   we are going to ask for some backup funding  yeah um there was a grant that was put out that   um that was miscommunicated to all the  districts not just us and we're hoping that um   the districts that overestimated uh are not going  to be reimbursable therefore leaving resources for   some of the districts like ours that should be  entitled to more i also want the board just to   think through we believe the executive order  is still in we're carrying our bus drivers and   our our um cafeteria workers um at this point  so um that that is an expense we're carrying   that we have to look at uh closely so um  you know we're we're going to look for   some backup money to help us out so um i'm  sure we'll hear more as we're going through   right courtney yeah dr saltman and i i i just  wanted to add one briefing this doesn't include   this doesn't include anything un anticipated  right so this is just what what we know as of   today that we need so for example kim mentioned  the family's first coronavirus response act   this doesn't include a cost estimate associated  with that this is assuming that with our existing   staff we'd be able to accommodate that so  as those you know new situations arise and   we get more information we'll we'll brief the  board on what changes in our funding picture   this is just this is what it looks like today  and and like dr saw mentioned it doesn't include   the cost associated with feeding families  which we do see a revenue gap every month   we're feeding our families because we we it's  important um and we are continuing to employ   all this the um the cafeteria workers and  that's an expense and our revenue is lower   because we're feeding less families than  we would where we fully everybody in school   courtney a question is so so what we're  looking here this is would i be correct   in this in in concluding this is a pretty good  summary of the new things we approved in june   that we weren't thinking about in february  that it really summarizes in this document   exactly yes exactly this is it includes the with  the cares act funding that we were awarded that   state coronavirus relief fund that dr sal  just mentioned that may be adjusted upwards   if we it turns out we have additional sub needs  you know things like that the city reserve money   that we rolled over for emergency that the city  agreed and then a small portion of the grant carry   over from some underspending last year so it's  all those things exactly joe it's the things that   were not contemplated contemplating the budget  that we're spending as one-time you know expense   on coronavirus related uh activities so  we're we're spending in lieu of some of   the things we were intending to do in february  we're now spending this money on that stuff   place replace some of those programs with coven  spending correct this is an update yeah based on   what we found out we needed so for example desk  shields for all of the people you know one-to-one   or face-to-face work that are um we're doing  with special needs students for example we had   to buy some additional science tables for example  things like that yeah thank you you're welcome yes go ahead go ahead rachel um courtney  this is kind of a little off topic here but   um speaking of school lunch did anything change we  had three schools that were not receiving the free   um lunches did anything change  with those three schools this year   so yes um we're in the process um we're  still collecting the information for those   those schools but we believe we're going to be  approved for cep it's just we're in the final   phase of getting the approval with the state  so it i'm like 99 sure i'll be able to report   to you at the next board meeting that those  three schools are now also cep schools which   you know gives us a little more flexibility  yes and more revenue yeah thanks thank you gladys that would like to report tonight i know  mr washington city ypto relational and   ku representative board do you have anything  addition that you want to share with us   i just have one thing i don't know  if it reached anyone there was um   a mention at the meeting that um the spanish  translation of our meetings was not exactly   um accurate and i don't know if anybody  heard that on this end no i didn't perhaps we could address that at some point um you mean the broadcast rachel yes  the the spanish translation of it okay we could that might be what we do from uh uh   from the hatters tv i think okay yeah  okay we'll check out the committee okay   my report is uh short uh i have a call to hope  that we can be done with our board meeting at   least by the night um i personally want to  thank nick russo and all the board members   that participated in the workshop last week when  he went over the roles and responsibility of   board members uh i think it was an excellent  session and i hope uh within the coming uh   year of 2021 that uh we will continue to have  the section because it's very informative in the   month of july august as a board and as a community  and parents some of us have parents grandparents   we felt that it was very important to keep uh  community informed and we we had meetings in   the month of july in august and uh to just really  uh keep the the community informed and the issues   that were concerning education and uh things were  changing so rapidly um most of us felt that that   was a good idea and i certainly appreciate you  attending and being supportive of that initiative   now i feel like wednesday september we're  back into our mode of board meetings   and i really don't want us to get lazy because  we have a lot of things that we are working on   we have the summit we have auburn street we have  hopefully sometimes budget something coming up and we want to be able to be efficient  and and move things forward and   and not be here all night that will continue doing  um this viral so uh what i'm trying to say is i   have talked about certain comments that were made  about um comments and how long it took for the   comments to be made and i thought about it quite a  few nights and we decided to do what we used to do   and our regular board meeting is to uh  have the comments go ahead and read them   but we're going to stop at three minutes just like  we're at our regular board meet in person so we   will start our board meeting at seven o'clock and  we're going to end public participation at 7 30   and be done with that so we can move on  and take care of the rest of the business   of the board um there might be some uh other  changes later on but you know i always have that   discussion with my board meeting members if we're  gonna make a change uh that we will be able to   at least let the community uh know that we're  going to make some changes so tonight again i   want to thank cindy for uh reading our comments  and um she does an excellent job and we can move   forward on that um the last thing i would say  to board members please if you're participating   in any type of discussion or communication by  speaking on a as a board member just do the   respect and let me know that you're participating  because when people called me and said you know   and mary jo was talking and uh even though you  know uh i was not a part of that communication   and skin engagement just let me know uh i have  no idea who's speaking and where you're speaking   so uh let's just work together okay that's all  that i have to report uh if seeing nothing else   uh ask a motion to move can i ask a question  before before we adjourn can i ask a question   i see a motion to move into exact position  gladys can i ask a question before we adjourn   yes right um i just want to address me yes i  can can you hear me okay yes yes okay sorry um   so i've been hearing from a lot of parents about  the you know instructional time and i brought this   up at our last meeting and it was day two of  the school year we're now in week three and um   cara you mentioned you know when academics really  start kicking in you know a full instructional day   will be um completed and maybe more so you  know so we're now in week three and i feel   like where is the asynchronous piece to go with  the synchronous um teachers are still training um   you know can can you speak a little bit about  like what's happening yeah so you know the the   there's it's no secret that this has been a  um you know a fairly organized but difficult   transition so teachers are still trying to get a  handle on delivering the lessons uh i'll give you   just two two different type of scenarios at the k5  level uh we have our our coaches our instructional   coaches kind of curating a lot of content for  the teachers um to use in their google classrooms   that's organized um we prioritize standards so  that we're making sure that with the time that   we have with students that we're targeting um the  most important high leverage standards that we can   taking into consideration what what went on  in the spring and also where students are   arriving in the fall so there's a lot to manage  there with just navigating the technology piece   um kind of looking at standards in a little bit of  a different way and then delivering these lessons   um and having to really understand them first  before you can deliver them so there's been   a lot of planning and time needed to do  that uh at the k5 level as far as the um   students are building stamina to stay online right  now particularly at the younger grades uh that   has been a difficult transition for students as  much as it has been for staff so um you know as   as time builds um we'll be able to give students  more independent work um and some are starting to   do that now so it may not be seen particularly at  the younger grades you're not going to see as much   uh there but as kids start to get into fourth and  fifth grade then we start to hit middle school and   up you'll see more asynchronous work um i guess  i should have clarified i guess i'm speaking   more at the high school level all of the flex  time you know not not just all of the wednesday   in the afternoons and monday tuesday thursday  friday sure so um let's talk about edge annuity   so we have had um a big up portion of time that we  wanted to make sure that kids were uh engaging in   not just the synchronous but the asynchronous we  believed worse was going to come from ingenuity   and we still believe that um agenuity has  been uh we have been working with them to   get our integration up and running um we had  our first training session on september 16th we   originally had a training session uh set for  teachers to go much earlier in the school   year so it was kind of part of that front loading  professional development however when we switched   to distance learning our entire schedule shift  shifted and we lost that training date so when   we rescheduled we the early state we could  push out with integration was september 16th   concurrent with that we've had tremendous  integration issues with uh and and working with   that company in particular because they have taken  on over 500 school districts in the last 30 days   and so we've been in the queue with them  working on getting our systems up and running so   um teachers as of just yesterday our middle school  students were were locked and loaded into the   system um it took i can't even begin to tell you  uh i think we're all still a little traumatized   from how many uh appointments we've had with the  engineers and the folks at ingenuity to get it all   up and running so we are there now teachers will  start to um work with this program and start to   do a little bit more at the secondary level which  will fill in a lot more of the time that we spoke   of earlier um it's coming probably about two weeks  later than we would have liked but moving forward   you should see that we also do like the fact that  the the flex provides still that um opportunity   for students to get more support um as mentioned  by the the two students who are on on on earlier   um it is you know depending on what your what your  needs are you still have that opportunity but the   the asynchronous work will come teachers are still  kind of just working out the in-person synchronous   piece and that part will come with time but  having the right tools to do that is everything   and that's a piece at the secondary level that  ingenuity will help to fill as we go forward   okay so more to come more to come thanks yeah do  you have any other questions concerns steven um motions okay do we need a brain

to reconvene this meeting of yves shrimp township board of education can we all please rise for the pledge of allegiance thank you everyone at this point in time we're going into presentations and we have our annual self uh uh we have our annual hiv self assessment summary uh dr smith i give you the floor thank you mr and i would like to turn the floor over to ms mcgoulek who's going to talk to us a bit about our school annual hip self-assessment summary um that comes out later so i want to just spend a little bit of time talking about process and then we'll go through the categories the rubric and the actual sum of scores so in terms of process so typically the state would release the information in may in may to june our schools have their last school safety team meeting in the summer the principals upload the um their scores typically i present this to you in august and then it actually has to be submitted to the state in september and then the state would release actual grades late winter sometime spring once the state releases your grades you're required within 10 days to post those on your districts and school websites and then we always share this the actual grades at a board meeting and then that process starts all over again so this year in anticipation of last spring and everything that was going on the state did not release they actually didn't do that till august of this year but being proactive we had our schools meet and have their final school safety team meeting just like we normally would in may and june they talk about trends they talk about things that have happened as it related to harassment intimidation bullying preventative measures how they did um they scored themselves and they had that information ready so the state released in august this year principals spent that month going through and actually inputting that and then we are here tonight usually as i said i do in august i'm doing it tonight and then we'll submit that to the state so you have a presentation and then in my section is you to approve the submission of that to the state it's technically not due until december of this year but we tried to stay on the same time frame and i wanted to present since it's last year's information as close to last year as we can so in terms of the different what they call core elements or categories there were absolutely no changes from the rubric actually over the last two years so this is the third year that there's no changes each school rates themselves in these eight different areas and then each area has what they call different elements within them or indicators so the first one is related to your programs your approaches and any initiatives that you have at the school level the second one is any trainings that you do related to hip policy the third one is about other trainings and programs that you have for staff for volunteers for people like that the fourth is your curriculum instruction as it relates to hip and other information and skills like social skills um the fifth is hip personnel so required to have an antibiotic coordinator that is my lucky title required to have anti-anti-bullying specialist that's our counselors required to have school safety teams that is per the guidelines it's the principal it's the counselor it has a parent representative on there it has teachers on there we combine and do ours for kind of looking at climate so we include something with wellness and we also include something with green so we're looking at the full package uh six is actual incidents in your reporting procedure so are you following so as you know we have a policy are you following that policy in terms of deadlines and requirements seventh is your investigation and your procedures and then the last is the actual reporting and so that goes back to once your grades are released are you posting them on your website like you're supposed to so those are your different areas where you as the team that school safety team is rating themselves and how they did for last year in terms of the rubric you have up to three points that you can give so you're either zero as you're not meeting that indicator one is you're partially meeting two is your meeting three is you're exceeding so all of our schools in all of our areas are either meeting or exceeding so there's nobody who is in the does not meet or the partially meets so everyone's doing what they are required to do plus more in particular areas in terms of the summary report so this is what each school and what they gave themselves and so your total possible points are 78 you'll see a range if you look to the far right anywhere from 74 to 77 and then following each element you'll see the different schools and you'll see you know very similar in terms of a range within there so if i look at element two it's either eights or nines if i look at element four everyone was a six if i look at you know element eight that's the reporting everybody was a six so you see slight variations probably the biggest area where we do see is element one and so because of those kind of variations we look at what were those where it was a two versus a three and then we come up with general recommendations so those recommendations or where those places were twos instead of threes related to end of year and honestly even last year thinking about that a little bit with just the pandemic in general last spring where we might have seen a school score themselves where it might have been a three in that particular element one area they gave themselves a two and what that came down to is making annual recommendations in terms of their initiatives or the plans kind of evaluating what you did and then talking about a plan or next steps and i think where everybody was last spring right the second is assessing what your programs and going through them i try this initiative and the difference between doing the initiative and talking about it is a two but doing the initiative and sending out a survey and then based on that survey information that would be the difference between a two and a three so we have that as one targeted professional development so that might be something where you're training volunteers or you're training your school safety team other than actually just attending or doing pd at a session you might actually do that by sending someone out either to see a webinar or go to a live presentation but again like presentations last spring um and then so what we also added is because in many of the areas the difference between a two and a three as i said is kind of data sometimes so that idea of you know depending on where we are we'll certainly evaluate the health conditions at the time but we might be doing some kind of survey which we do from time to time or school might do a particular survey like for example rice went from a 76 last year to a 77 they did a survey in the fall in one of their areas that they went from a two to a three so things like that and then we talk about that collectively when i have my anti-bullying coordinator meetings i meet with the specialists i met with the principals and we talk through trends things that we're seeing recommendations things that they're doing in the school [Music] any other questions any more questions you guys okay thank you miss magulok i appreciate your presentation all right moving on at this point in time we are going to go to public comment on agenda items only this meeting will now be open to the public referencing agenda items only however if your questions or comments pertain to litigation student or personnel items or negotiations we'd ask that you see the superintendent after the meeting since we do not discuss these matters in public please limit your comments to three minutes per person again some of the guidelining rules that i know that are usually posted up on up on the live stream just make sure that if you have any questions ask any of your questions then hang up the phone and then we'll answer those make sure unequivocally to please state your name and address clearly all right and we'll also try to talk as clearly as possible uh and am i missing anything in that list i don't think i am okay all right so uh at this point uh we will be going again this is for agenda items only hi good evening thank you so much for taking my call so i um it's called please statement please state your name and address first oh i'm so sorry my name is casey clark i live in grissom court in morrison village thank you um i was calling um to express a concern both my children are home doing the remote study my one daughter in particular is in fourth grade and in a rather large 100 percent remote class and i was curious how you guys were addressing some of the issues that i think are being talked about that the teachers are bringing to your attention such as the um the large class sizes and being able to really engage these students the technical difficulties you know i i'm not sure that i'm constantly i'm not sure that my child is getting the same education that she should be getting at this point is that all is that all caller yeah okay hang up and now and they'll answer the question thank you for that um those questions it is that that is our all remote classes and technology in general are definitely an area of extreme focus for us right now and as well the class size of some of our full remote classes trying to reduce that as well so i just want to thank you for highlighting those two areas some steps we're taking in that regard the and and some of the technology issues just in speaking with other districts are they are beyond any lo any local district um google you know google me for example um has been upgraded among other things um adding more grid views um to go from 16 to up to 49.

2020-09-25 Pima County, AZ YouTube / asdbazgov transcript source: youtube ASDB Board Work Session (09/24/2020) · passage 1
we are all live excellent um now is the the time set for uh the asdb work study session uh thank you so much for joining us um i'd like to open with a quick roll call of the board members um linda bove and i do not see linda um lynn davison and i do not see lynn um oh there she is oh there she is okay so lynn is here um mark sims and i do not see mark uh mike gordon here from there is there president mike manley i see mike uh shelley nice i see hello hi um and uh and david i'm here so um thank you so much and tsuka oh it's okay sorry that's okay so thank you all for joining us um before we get to our first um item uh on the agenda just in terms of david dean two and dean is here correct i think i did i say gene thought i did but hi dean um you before we get started um i think for this one to kind of you know simulate the room better than we did last time we can all keep our videos on and uh kind of almost as if we were in the same room together uh you know you can speak please just allow some pauses so the interpreters can do their job uh and just to be some respectful of some of those pauses but other than that i think that is how we'll proceed for today um you can see uh we have quite an agenda nancy can start with item one nancy could you read the item out loud please david uh sure the presentation of a sample strategic plan and uh if you've seen it in board docs we've uh supplied uh kind of a sampling of strategic plans from other school districts in arizona and some other schools for the deaf and for the blind in other states thank you this is nancy alexander and the first document i would like to review is the sample strategic plans it was suggested as information from our last work session that might be useful is to see what some other similar schools were doing as well from the west as well as school districts so i went through texas new mexico colorado utah california washington oregon idaho montana wyoming and went on all of their websites and documented and then downloaded and this is in board docs for you if they had a strategic plan what the dates were for the strategic plan because some had them posted but they were not current and or if there was not a plan posted at all i also looked at chandler scottsdale higley mesa peoria and cartwright and if you remember from our last meeting president nigro had attended a workshop with the arizona school business officials in the fall of 2019 and participated in a presentation from chandler unified channel excuse me some reason my siri decides to als all of a sudden start talking to me i apologize for that um we uh we right now have um the channeler plan that we're going to review you should have that in your board docs and i apologize for that okay i removed her from my doc um so the chandler plan is the one that we're going to briefly review david would you like to walk through this or would you like me to do it uh i i can i go walk through it i think there are you know hopefully the board has been able to um look at all of the uh look at all the sample plans um that we've that we've gathered and i think what i'd like to do is talk a little bit about the chandler unified plan but then also some of the the good pieces of the other plans as well and i i want to get started discussion as to what pieces of this um the other board members like do they dislike um you know what do they think are things that we should you know perhaps model our strategic plan uh you know from uh you know whether it's any of these subsets really i think in all of them there are good pieces uh to be found in all the my i think i really like the texas schools both for the blind and the deaf i think they're really good um the chandler has a the reason why i wanted to go through that with a little more granularity is that they really describe you know they kind of describe in a visual sense the the big pillars so to speak of what's important to the district um and then they that kind of cascades down into some guiding principles and priorities and then and then it flows down to some additional metrics you know which they're going to be looking at at a regular basis to make sure that they're advancing towards those goals and you know again that um i think that's consistent with some of the aspect training and i think sukay went to a similar training uh earlier in the in the year months ago when we could still travel and that was their uh that was one of the main takeaways was that we have to be able to not only identify where our you know kind of our core our big pillars are and build substantial um and specific uh uh models or or statements of where we want to be and then some measurable goals and then and then we're always going to be looking at them right so in our agenda we're gonna you know hopefully once this is all done we'll be able to map all of our agendas back to the strategic plan so that we know that the organization is aligning with uh where you know what the strategic plan is so if if you look at um and again uh please jump in at at any time any other board members that they have comments but if we look at the chandler unified plan they begin with the the mission the vision uh you know of the um of the entire organization and then they they kind of split down into these four big pillars of outstanding students world-class employees organizational culture and effective resource management and if you kind of follow that down to graphically that sets the the priorities of you know these kind of positive modeling statements of where they you know where they want to be so if you look at outstanding students it's you know integrated 21st century competencies throughout learning ensure continuous progress provide relevant and challenging curriculum uh you know foster leadership potential in all students um but that's you know students are kind of one of that group the other group is employees and how do we how do they develop staff how do they um improve staff do they improve retention how do they do that um so that's that's in the world-class employees pillar we also see in the you know there's the organizational culture pillar of how do they operate more effectively um so you know if you read a couple of samples uh in our district we make decisions based on the best interests of students we create a supportive environment for risk taking innovation and change we maintain and build alliances and partnerships and you know again it's recognizing that it's a district but they operate in the context the broader context of uh education service delivery so they work with other institutions um and how do they how do they do that effectively and in a way that's professional and then there's the effective resource management pillar uh which is you know more related to the the efficient fiscal responsibility uh that they have how are they spending money in a way that is uh that is efficient and effective as well if you scroll down in that in that strategic plan and we see uh if you scroll down a little bit further i think there are societal outputs in that in that chart a little bit later we see some of the priorities that they've made for those pillars and we see specific metrics that they're going to be looking at on a regular basis under each of those each of those matters so i think we look on page uh let's see i think around page 8 or so we see some of that here's how we measure equity and student perception here's how we measure grade level proficiency here's how we measure a standard of students in a third grade reading level and they're specific quantifiable metrics that the board can use to determine where they need to be if they if they need um to take if they're falling behind at some in some level uh they could they could pay more attention to that they can do something different they can change some of their uh programs or different programs and and that's the you know kind of the way that they're looking at this plan that it's a living document um and and they're they're going to be sure that they're advancing uh at the rate that is that is appropriate for them uh and you can see if you scroll down even further there's other metrics that relate to employee performance david i didn't mean to interrupt president agro but i do have a question page eight that you that you just mentioned i'm looking at the scores and i'm looking at one two what out of what do you know what their their top score potential is um oh in terms of those levels i mean they have a rubric score and they're scoring on a level from zero to uh i mean i apparently get to greater than three i didn't pull the rubric down uh for for you as well um i think the you know from my perspective yeah four i think i see four so that would like there's a rubric of four right um the i guess what i'm saying is that the uh when you're there when the score is greater than three it's just in the fourth category if we look at that on that page or for equity and grade level proficiency so so the idea there you know again is that we're looking at quantifiable metrics that will help us gauge where the agency is and and and track its progress so that structure i think is really helpful there now you've seen in the in the other um ones that we've we've developed they're not all exactly like that especially the ones from out of state um they're not all exactly like that but they're they're similar in that they can identify what the the agency or what these different agencies believe are their important um kind of important pillars and and what they're doing to further their relationships and improve their relationships within each of those so um and again if any of the board um as we talked about uh earlier in the meeting uh if you have any questions about any of these or or have any comments you know certainly let me know if you think that you you've seen some of anything in in in the uh curriculum that you like i'm sorry the strategic plans that you like from some of the other schools yeah i think now is the time time to talk about it and to get your opinion and i see the suitcase i like the the detail of this this speaks to my soul from a metrics perspective but i think one of the things i would like to make sure that we are encompassing as part of that strategic plan and breaking things down into metrics that we're not only just looking at testing scores but we're also looking at those post school outcome data and and trying to speak to some of those metrics as well the other thing i i'm just sort of trying to be cautious of is that we are in a very um early phase of implementing new curriculums and and i i think we need to be cognizant as the board that just by implementing a curriculum we are not going to see overnight changes in az merit scores and things like that that we need to not only be planning a strategic plan for five years but we need to be looking longitudinally at how students are improving and i've said this before it's not that we are giving up on the students we currently have but we as the board have to recognize that we're not going to see some of the improvements um in academics and and testing scores with the folks that are getting closer to graduation we really need to look at and start measuring those outcomes with the students that are coming in now that this is going to be you know this is a long term um you know we're in it for the long game is i guess is what i'm trying to say and and we're not going to see instant improvement and instant results and i think in any kind of planning we need to be cognizant of this because we don't want to set something up and say a year later go well we didn't meet the score for this class therefore this is not a successful strategic plan and mortar but if success going to do this we need to look across the agency and keep focus on our co-ops and and what kind of results we're getting from the services we're providing there as well not just you know the curriculum is only being used in our brick and mortar um we need i know that sounds like really broad and that's where some of these plans this those schools for the deaf don't have that component that extra component that we have and i don't know if i have an answer but how we're going to scope all of that into one strategic plan when you're talking about all the multitude of things that we're doing this is 2k again um i i hear you lynn and here's one of my concerns is that um unless the district allows us like gives us permission to use our standards we have to follow their standards with the co-op students right and i i think we're also maybe i don't want to say it's an oversight but i think we we sometimes mix the two a little bit um you know the brick and mortar schools kids are there because of their iep placement okay the uh and in my and this is my mind this is how i view the difference between them schools are contracting with asdb in the co-ops and so i think we need to make sure that yes we are evaluating that and they are part of it but if we want to provide better services then we need to develop better contracts with those schools that in my mind is that's where we consult shelley had something um i'm also kind of giving some consideration to how we can follow the students because some of them are coming into us for preschool and we can follow them all the way through but some come into us in high school and there it's going to be a different situation so i think we need to be thoughtful about the that particular variable that that will impact their outcomes um and will impact our data right and i think you know to that point the uh you know in terms of the the co-ops uh to your point that's probably going to be or i would envision that to be and one of the pillars right so so um they don't necessarily have that uh facet at chandler um you know nor do they have it in some of these other schools that we looked at that we've looked at um but i think that we would have that in ours now the metrics are going to be different because as you mentioned they're they're students in their in their home schools and they have different you know academic uh standards because those vary by district um but the services that we deliver you know we can measure the quality of those services in different metrics and i agree that you know we're a contractor in those cases and we're really competitor with other providers so we need to be able to have some kind of quality insurance you know program or or arm so that we can more effectively deliver those those services and be more of a perverted provider and you know in those cases so i i agree i mean i know that we've already started that um you know with the integration of the co-ops i mean we've started down that path but by placing it in the strategic plan um we'd be it's going to be something that we're always going to be looking at because we'll be able to track that again it'll be different metrics because they won't be uh we won't have as much um control necessarily over the entire educational experience because we just don't have that in those contexts um in terms of the the different students so um sue k in terms of your comment of the well there's two two aspects in terms of the the data of outcomes if we look at the uh you know employment and enrollment in post-secondary education so if you look at the um the texas school for the blind on page 15 you know they they have their that's one of their metrics and they have a definition the purpose importance uh the method of collection the method of calculation so in their calculation they're actually calling students right telephone calls are made by the superintendent's office or designee each summer to the last known location of the graduate including their homes their parents homes and adult living centers and data are reported in the hour annual report following the fourth quarter and then there's a methodology limitation or a method of calculation and data limitations so you know how i mean part of it as such mentioned is we don't have that baseline data right now and we we probably you know should determine some kind of metric that's similar to this so we can start getting that baseline because we don't you know sitting today we don't know what that is um and that's you know my understanding is that that's not something that we a a measurement like that and taking data like that is not something we typically do for um you know for doe um so you know this would be something you know a new initiative if we were to implement something like that this is 2k again and and i'm not sure i mike might be able to speak to this too i know there are post-school outcome data that we do provide but i do know that i do know that there might be some missing data or overlapping data on who is responsible whether it's asdb campuses or the co-ops or if the home schools are providing that so i don't know that our data reporting is as clean as it should be can i jump in and bring some just uh so there's a big black hole when it comes to psos for t for bin hi kids in arizona part of that data reporting the responsibilities going back to the leas so if if we assume that leas do as good a job and arizona kicks butt at psos nationwide we we get good i'm not saying we do a great job but we have data that's that is pretty rock solid when you look nationwide um there's a whole net data for uh hi and vi kids um part of that was we had we didn't get that now that we're going to be able to pull that data from leas we should be able to have a baseline a better sense of where those kids end up after high school we don't have that right now um we there's we don't we didn't report that data so we don't know where all that falls out so i'm i'm making an assumption that in the next year or two if leas do as good a job with getting that data in as they have with every other disability category we will be in a better place in a year or two years when we can actually know where those kids are heading a year after they have exited services so we don't have the data to make um those kind of decisions right now we might but like as a state we we have not had that so in the next couple years we're very much looking forward to having that data so we can make better decisions yeah i can back that up mike i know in our district they call and call and call and if they can't get them or the neighbor or the grandparent we all get emails does anybody know how to get a hold of these kids it's an all-out effort and i think once we clear the lines of ownership with our our kids at both of the brick and mortar and on our campuses camps are easier but um we'll be able to track that a little better absolutely that is critical to that for long term because i know we hammer out it and the state does a great job we're over 80 i think nationally it's it's not there and but our the data for that those groups of subcategories in the state is not it's not where we can point to solution-based long-term planning at this point because we have a gap in that data and it should be better with the new data submission protocols that both are required to do this year and that's something that i'm personally very much looking forward to because i don't know where i don't have actual numbers about where these kids are at a year after exiting from services so i'm excited about that so this is mark sims here can you guys hear me yeah yes yeah so i i don't live every day in the weeds with this data but basically what you're telling me is you don't have the data i don't know right we didn't uh essentially don't right so can we all assume that we're going to do a strategic plan without data because honestly this strategy and measurement are different things and i appreciate that we do or don't have the ability to measure outcomes but it's actually not strategy in and of itself is the evolution of this i mean i appreciate the need and i'm glad better date is coming but in terms of a strategy our strategic plan would seemingly be something that would be better i mean unless we just say well we'll wait till we have data we're going to have to do a not totally data full strategic plan am i missing something i'm just not totally understanding or something i think what you're missing mark is that the strategic plan has several parts of it right so we're going through the different uh parts of what that is and now up top there's kind of our big pillars kind of our subpillars describes what's important to the agency and how we're going to implement that if you scroll down way down you'll see the different data that we are going to use to measure our progress towards those strategic goals so we're kind of at the bottom of the page right now if we look at that um are we gonna you know we're gonna begin to collect baseline data at some point but what i'm saying is the strategic document that we have is gonna talk about what data is going to be important to us to make sure that we're achieving is about an execution issue not a strategy issue in other words you formulate the strategy and then you give the professional staff the call to execute the strategy so we're really now talking about the execution of the strategy rather than formulating the strategy am i missing something uh yes uh you're missing that we're talking about the kind of the the implementation of the of the strategic plan that's correct and that's what the professional staff does at the agency correct we're talking about the bottom of the page now you know in our agenda today we're going to be talking about the top of the page we're going to be talking about our big pillars we're going to be talking about uh where we want to be as an agency and then where that leads from there right because again we're going from the top to the bottom on a strategic plan we're going to talk about how we're going to measure where we're going to that's go that's part of it right so we can't we can't a complete strategic plan without some of these without some of these metrics you mean you can't execute it and then you can't say what those measurements are but when we're talking about whether or not we have the data or not that's that's a different issue am i missing something i'm i'm just i i think i think you are i think that we we can't have a strategic plan if we don't know what we're going to measure and you know we don't we're not going to be able to say hey the x is important but how do you measure anything okay are you going to be measuring anything anything yeah you yourself no that's what the professional staff does so my point to you is at some point we pass over the execution phase from the strategic phase and i appreciate people's expertise about the data and data sharing and that you have it now there's a good relationship with ade and the agency and all that that's awesome but that's actually not the specifics of a strategy that's the ability to execute the strategy it's a different conversation i don't know that we're ever not going to be focused on what the strategic plan is right i mean this is going to be a living document that we're we're trying to live every you know every meeting every every few months we're trying to make sure that we're making progress towards our strategic goals which we'll set you know at kind of at the top of the document right um so the the ability to track progress is is part of this plan nobody said it isn't but the discussion of whether or not we can actually currently obtain the data or not is different than what you're talking about there's no question that we will need to obtain baseline data in some of these areas after we've gotten to that point where you know right now as we again my goal in this is to acquaint you with what a strategic plan looks like and being able to measure certain outcomes and obtain data part of that nobody disputes that i i i think you just did though right i mean didn't you just tell me that we shouldn't be thinking about data because we don't have no i didn't say that you're misstating me what i said was we're talking about whether or not we actually can do it right now and what are the interagency issues that are causing those problems that's not within that is a implementation issue not a strategic issue i would think that the you know what type of i mean we're not even sure we're going to measure yet but we know that that we're going to our strategic plan is going to be uh is going to contain certain metrics that we want to measure but then we don't have that yet and you're right we don't have that now we do need to get baseline data but i wanted to show you what a strategic plan looks like and we give you giving you several examples um and that's our next point of the agenda is you know what's the board responsibility in this process and i was hoping a little bit later if you look at the agendas we're going to talk about you know what are these big pillars what are the what is the mission or what should it be if it needs to be revisited and what are our priorities um other uh you know in terms of looking at the at the sample strategic plan um are there any other questions or comments about you know what they look like or you know what what our model is or should be or any any parts of these that that you like or dislike dean i mean you just you just speak up this is a free pre-opened form well i want to make sure i raise my hand so the interpreters can keep up and understand uh what i'm talking about and who's talking this is dean you know i i'm gonna ride this wave because i i feel like i'm echoing a little bit with mark said and i got really excited when i heard what sue was saying about the co-ops and and what that whole dynamic is what i'm concerned about is we start to fall into the weeds on data and metrics and that's to me that's not a strategic plan guys if it's the co-ops what are the strengths weaknesses opportunities threats all of that are you know when we get into that discussion that's strategic and i just i'm gonna keep you know trying to keep my eye on the ball because i'm looking at it as we're the board we're 30 000 feet we've got objectives we've got to do and talking about all the things involved in that strategic plan now i'm going to agree with mark once we start getting into the weeds about the data and the metrics i think we're losing fact we're losing our focus so i'm gonna ride the wave but i'm gonna keep saying this that keep 30 000 feet that's what i think the board's supposed to be doing as a collective just something to think about guys i will note that every one of these strategic plans talks about data and how they're going to live their strategic plan and how they're going to measure that do they also have other things yeah they do um but we're looking at it from top to bottom now and you're right dean the the what we're going to think about the co-ops is going to be different than what we've seen you know what we different than what we think about in our brick and mortar and are going to be different than what we've seen in some of these other sample ones that we've looked at because they don't necessarily have those relationships now what what exactly we're going to measure i don't know and you're right we're going to rely on the professional staff to tell us that um we're going to be creating kind of the top parts of these documents about what the priorities are what the vision is um you know who the you know who the stakeholder holders are and where we want to be with respect to those stakeholders um but when we look at top to bottom we're we're not going to make half a strategic plan right we're going to make a full one just like we see um and i'm not here to say that we need uh you know 3a and uh on the texas plan is you know should be this or that i think we're going to rely on the professional staff but if you'll notice they all they all have these parts and if we don't have these parts in our final strategic plan but we haven't done our job and i agree and i think what i'm trying to see off what mark was saying is at what point do we determine whose role that is obviously it's staffs if we've got you know the goals and objectives of strategic plan and in order to make decisions down the road on that we need data but for now i just i worry about us falling into the weeds real quick on the data elements and the bits and pieces and parts of the strategic plan in respect to all of our time so we can get there i'm just making sure i'm following the ball i want to make sure that i'm not missing something so i got really excited when suitcase started but talking about this the co-ops again and i'm like all right let's let's dig into that as that's piece of our strategic plan what does that mean because i can come up with all kinds of strengths and weaknesses on the co-ops and other pieces of those pillars so i was thinking maybe something else that that's the direction we were going maybe we're getting there i'm going to follow along and just kind of be in the balance or the thought process i guess that's item three in the agenda the suggested next step with the big rocks so the big rocks is what we're going to talk about the co-ops we're going to talk about brick and mortar schools we're going to talk about business management effective business management these are all things that i i think we would want to talk about as our as our main pillars but you know this agenda item is really let's take a look at the samples let's look what they look like you know what we're done it's going to look something like this um yeah i guess good unless anyone else has anything else to say with respect to agenda item number one uh we're going to go to the board's responsibility in the planning process i think nancy you were going to talk a little bit about uh what what the board's responsibility is although maybe maybe i've just done that in the context of talking to dean but if you can just go along a little bit about you know what what the board's responsibility is in terms of playing this from a high level and we'll work with math during the course of this process that'd be great first of all i think it is important to have the end in mind and david that was the purpose of the first agenda item is to give you a a visual or a picture of a product of what you might have it at the end and the components necessary the board and this is nancy alexander's experience working with boards in strategic planning you can change this but typically we see the board providing the clear vision of where you want to be in five years and we know that if you try to do too much you won't do it as well as if you try to do some ice some big rocks so if you think of a jar you can fit in three or four big rocks and then all the sand or salt or colors or whatever you put in water all of that is then how you meet those big rocks and that's exactly what dean was saying the staff's responsibility they will so if you think of process if we could get your big rocks and we could get to the point of developing metrics with the staff and come back to the board and say here's how we'll know we're able to have um the what markets said premier services or in this case of the chandler's plans outstanding students world-class employees organizational culture and effective resource management with those five big rocks if you can help us with that then if all of a sudden you come and say as a board we want you now to look at um i'll i'll use virtual because we're doing it already but if we weren't doing it already then we could say how does that fit in with our big rocks so that we don't keep getting over into the shoulder or off the road map for continuous improvement the staff's responsibility is to give you good information and that's with data and so once you have your big rocks then we go back and tell you how we think we can best measurement measure it and you might say then i want also data that has to do with post-secondary outcomes and if we haven't included that then we'll refine that process so you'll be the filter along the way but we have lots of data sources and we have lots of gaps so if in fact you have limitations the first year we'll be developing baseline data in some places but over the course of five years you should have that baseline data and you should have improvements that show that you've met the goals that you have for these pillars as david refers to them um we need help with the pillars so that we are all rowing the boat the same direction and that i see is the board's responsibility in this first part of the planning process once we have the pillars we can operationalize those with staff and come back to you and once we have that refined to the point that the plan is approved by the board then it that's what you get reported on every board meeting here's how we're doing on these four pillars as evidenced by with the documentation necessary so the documentation that you're talking about with post-secondary outcomes for all of our students is a powerful measure of what's happening to them when there are adults year one put a system in place how to collect it year two and get the baseline data year two show uh two to five percent growth year three you might adjust that because that really underestimated and so that's the living document that you continuously improve but you don't shift the big rocks it doesn't mean you don't have a lot of flexibility but you you don't then start having to one on the left side of the boat start rolling backwards or going a different direction and that's where the strategic plan really helps you and so i can go on and on i dream about strategic planning so if you guys want more details i can go into that but as an overview help first with those big rocks or pillars uh this is more of just throwing out a seed it's sort of a question in my mind um and nancy you might be able to clarify this a little bit for me where i'm struggling right now is the two halves of this agency the brick and mortar and the um co-ops i think there are some generalities of those big rocks that can be consistent across both but i also think you know the brick and mortar we do have much more control than we do on the co-op side of things and i think i'm trying to visualize some clarity of how we're going to measure those you know without having two separate strategic plans it measures not the word how are we going to develop something so that it's not too completely separate strategic plans sorry we are serving students so we want to have outstanding students as a big rock or high student achievement and then from that you will have subsections because you're not only with the itinerant services but you're going to have that with the elp and you're going to have it with primary intermediate and high school so that's really the weeds and that is will be in this very detailed strategic plan and that takes a while to develop but you have the talent to do that so when we look at elp 0 to 5 and we say to that staff how do you know that you're what what first of all what do you do and then how well do you do it and how do you know and right now when we ask how well you do it they can answer that by saying well we think we do a really good job and what they should be able to say to you is that here when we have the kids at one year old they know ten words that they can sign as an example and by the time they're three they know a hundred and fifty this is how many words in vocabulary a speaking child has and where you compare with that that it's going to take a while you know the the data piece is definitely in the weeds and it's not as refined as it can be but if you give us that strategic direction if you give those um pillars then everybody focuses in on those and i think we are in some respects because of initiatives that you've asked about and and but it's just not um in a plan so back to dean um itinerant services have been that was on the agenda not on the agenda but on the forefront of discussions and as a result of that we knew in order to get quality assurances we needed to have consistency with leadership and by having five co-ops that had five different leaders doing five different things we were going to get five different results so um we're still continuously improving any organization usually is but now it's with you saying these are the three four five most important things that you should be putting your time and energy into you have your budget committee that shayna has been working on but now let's get some measurements in and really talk about that resource allocation if that's a big rock and really do um so that's the strategic part what mark is talking about is then the devil and the details and that's where we rely on the expertise of the staff but i think achievement wise you can have then branches on underneath the overall student achievement to differentiate that question quick question have we had a strategic plan in the past and i forgot about it or not that i'm aware of no okay i was just wondering if we could compare yeah if there's anything to compare to um where how we did on a previous but if we didn't have one then that's what i wanted to know thank you we we had a strategic plan but it did include the board in the development of the plan this is before my time i found a strategic plan that had been developed a while back and when i asked leadership and staff about that plan no one seemed to know anything about it so when you look at the scottsdale one as an example i mean the their goals transcend these organizational data issues right in other words there are big big goals and then and that's why even the division between cooperative and brick and mortar doesn't necessarily make sense because or it's not a restriction because you come up with a goal and then it gets implemented however it works for that particular component of the agency that's my take on the strategic plan unless one particular thing is a particular rock is totally improve itinerant services as its own thing if you put that obviously that is specific but you look at scottsdale they're across the agency right they want higher standards and accountability i mean i know these are really broad on their part but you know those are what i envision the types of things that you would do because then you would measure every board action and everything brought to the board is whether or not i mean this is just like having you know a mission statement followed by an organizational values and then you decide does everything you do is it consistent with the values or the strategic plan that you're trying to initiate and so that's what i would think we'd be doing not whether or not you can actually achieve it at year three because you have the data between four agencies and you know whether or not the internet works thank you mark and two things the the strategic priorities for scottsdale were communication and community partnerships optimal class sizes and personalized learning teacher quality and professional development technology improvements and integration high standards and accountability and school safety safety and school student support so those are the big rocks and then once you have agreed on those big rocks then we operationalize them and present them to you to make sure everybody is on the same page and there's no surprise i didn't know that's what you meant about school safety i didn't know that's what you meant about optimal classes those types of things are there's that clarity the strategic plan that was in place was developed in 2001 by the executive leadership team that annette and i were able to uncover and ironically the things that were in the plan are really what the schools have been doing in the past three years from the help of ade with school improvement there it said to get a curriculum in place it said to recruit and attract highly effective people and teachers um so many of the things that just we were working on anyway but it was one that was done according um to looking at it that somebody sat down and said these are a nice to-do list and nobody ever obviously nobody ever knew anything about it since annette's been here and we've had accreditation you have to and school improvement you have to have school goals every executive leader has a school goal and smart goals that they work with the net on i mean you have systems in place it's just not a comprehensive everybody rolling the boat together plan and so that's what we hope to accomplish and then you know the devil in the details really is going to be the challenge of the the staff to be getting begin getting better data and this forces that by saying as a board these are our priorities and we want to measure and um that way then you continuously improve because you're it's data driven thank you welcome linda we see linda has joined so welcome hello uh we are um just finishing point two i think you know given that discussion we can go on to uh point three the suggested next steps with the big rocks i think mark's kind of kicked off some of that um but really you know i want to hear i'm interested to hear what the board members think that the kind of the big rocks um should be and maybe before that there's there's big rocks but before that there's the you know there's the mission and the vision and that's going to transcend kind of the rock so to speak of the pillars um but if if we can hear some discussion of what what we think they should be you know mark has expressed um you know or has taken pointed out the the scottsdale priority goals uh that aren't necessarily divided by uh by school or by you know grade level um but their qualitative goals or qualitative areas um that you know within which the school is going to work to improve um is there and if we look at something like chandler uh they're breaking their pillars into you know employees and students and resource management uh it's a you know kind of similar for some of these others is there i'm interested to see what the board thinks that are kind of our big pillar should be i think mike is on were you going to say something mike you're a mute no well i mean there's there's basic tenants that should be in every strategic plan for an educational institution right increased academic performance increased graduation rate lower lower dropout rate dealing with students with disabilities we could talk about there's a whole scope of things that could generalize um has pillars that are almost obvious like academic achievement and post-secondary employment well wouldn't that be just a pillar of excellence and then it's kind of all encompassing and then you strive for it through the ways that you measure i i think the idea is to be more um a bit more focused than that or at least that's that's you know my take on it is you know when we look at scott snails they're you know the communication community partnerships optimal class size and personalized learning those are those are all good goals i mean there's certainly nothing you know nothing wrong with them but the way that that i envision you know looking at uh you know the strategic relationships of the agencies it's um you know what are we doing for our students um what are we doing for the for employees and staff development what are we doing to improve the organizational culture um and and maybe the students you know maybe we do subdivide that down to the the different ways that we serve the students right i mean we have elp which is a real you know a big component of the agency i mean especially with language development that's our language acquisition that's really important um that may be a pillar it could be a pillar that is the itinerant education component the co-op component it could be that a pillar is the the brick and mortar school one i you know i i don't have one i'm not set on one idea or another that's what i want some of the board input on you know what are the what are the major areas that we're working towards those are execution issues from my perspective you're you're dividing it down to different components of the agency and how you want different components of the agency to perform as compared to what are the overall strategies that you want to employ or obtain use or it's a it's a little different when you start sub categorizing it i mean if you want to say you know we want services to be available to all throughout the state that's different than you know we want the itinerant services approved i mean why would you say that as compared to we want all in services approved unless equity or something like that becomes your overarching value um i i i i don't know i i defer to nancy in terms of how you uh break those types of things down but when i look at a lot of the even chandler i'm looking at it right now they don't get that specific like well you know we need to make uh you know middle schools better well right and i think i think we're not saying that the goal is make things better as you know as mike that said there's certain goals that we can all agree on that every you know educational institutions gonna you know it's gonna agree on um but the uh the idea is where are we gonna what what are the core values what's the vision and then what are the major components of the agency um or or facets of the agency uh with which we can you know implement these strategies so the again we're kind of talking about the top level um uh type of ideas we're not necessarily saying we have to have a post-secondary outcome as you know that's not a pillar right i mean that's not going to be that i want a net to figure out what parts of the agency do whatever to do to get our strategy i don't i don't want to figure that out that's what annette and her staff is supposed to do this mike it regards the blindness there's a certain skill development that really should occur before you can just embrace the idea of academic excellence there needs to be you know braille literacy there needs to be advanced technology skills you need to have advanced and comparable travel skills to be able to not just run a route about to getting yourself from the from the classroom to the bathroom but really be able to navigate and and travel independently those are all things that have to happen before you can start talking about are you going to achieve a 6th grade or an 8th grade or a 12th grade academic level and you're going to be successful in college preparation et cetera that is transferable from the co-ops and public schools to the brick and mortar to to uh to actually anybody that's in school that's blind uh i'm not sure if if you know those you know and it's not just an academic uh pursuit that would happen through school that that has to be foundational before anyone can actually begin to talk about their their academic the succe of those techniques you know that's that's something that can be worked out in a variety of ways but uh if we're talking about strategic foundations i'm not sure how much that is i don't know how the focus of that is uh is pervasive but it certainly is necessary um i'm going to kind of piggyback on what what mike is saying and i'm wondering if um what i'm hearing is academic excellence or it could be one pillar but i'm wondering if um social emotional um peer equivalence you know to some level is maybe another um pillar specific to students that have sensory disabilities that we're not just looking at improving academic scores but we're also looking at improving their independence and their ability to be on the same playing field the a level playing field with their peers outside of academics or in in conjunction with academics and that may be a separate pillar that we need to look at sue k i might be able to help you with that that's this is nancy if you look at some of the plans and and then this is the hard part of strategic planning but we can if we start out with um the wording of outstanding students then we start defining and you can see in chandler's example their two focus areas were academic excellence and emerging leaders we could have focus areas of academic excellence we could have social and emotional accident excellence we could have and that's really for the staff to help you define because you have the benefit of having pieces for the representative group of your being as a board member whereas some other board members won't have that so we can help you with that and then you help us did you think about this this and this so what i'm hearing is one pillar is we want to we're all about kids and we're all about our students and we want our students to do really well and chandler calls that outstanding students and then we start defining it and we come back to you with what here's some what what would look like in guiding principles if we want to use those the you know we're going to start now peeling the onion and giving you examples and then we're going to give you more examples of how you measure it so what we hear from the discussion here is we have to make sure we recognize academics with put but we won't post it we want our kids to be successful when they leave and have choices of whatever they do when they leave our schools we and that ties into mike's graduation rate and po secondary outcomes but with michael gordon we want to make sure that we have the developmental stages that are appropriate we want to make sure we have the curriculum all of those double in the details of what you do to get to having outstanding students the plan will have a picture for you of how you'll know that you have outstanding students but we need that pillar and once we have that then we'll start working on with the expert internal expertise of our best thinking and then collectively with your best thinking to get us jump started with those details i personally outstanding students doesn't do much for me but i can see probably how they got to that point because it's more than just academics okay mike just everyone just i'm sorry again yeah so this is mike so i was looking at some of the plans um like washington has a basically a two-pager um kind of cuts cuts right to the point where they have a core value statement that's global for their state and then they have a big 15-year goal like a big hairy audacious goal so they and i'm gonna just so i i couldn't figure out how to cut and paste to the chat but they have a core purpose where the wrestler plan is basic it says to empower blind and visually impaired individuals to reach their full potential right so that goes sel beyond academics and then they have one big goal every blind and visually impaired student in washington has the supports and services they need to succeed so their big goals are their whole state uh empowering blind and visually impaired students to reach their full potential so that encompasses kind of the whole shebang it doesn't get into the details of you know increasing ips and itinerant services in northern uh arizona it doesn't get quite that specific but do we have a core purpose that we can force the pillars into if that's what we're trying to figure out mike i think i think that's our homework i think it's to you know try to to try to think of things um perhaps discuss at the next video where we discuss it now uh i mean i think that's this appropriate the agenda item um so i think uh yeah and again i understand that maybe we're not as eloquent uh on the fly as we might be with some thought but you know a core purpose or a mission and a vision statement to update what we have uh now is probably something that we that we need to do um and uh you know i'd love to hear everyone's opinion on what that should be this is nancy again if you look at your mission your vision your mission statement it's education for all students throughout arizona who are hard of hearing deaf or have vision loss leadership and service collaboration with families school districts communities and others and partnerships with other agencies that will enable children who are hard of hearing deaf or have vision loss to succeed now and in the future that's what we're committed to excellence and innovation in so to your question mike that could be your four pillars if you want to start by the vision and mission were all in your board docs from the last meeting we also have then core values what we call them our guiding principles but it's act accountability and we've operationalized that collaboration we've operationalized that in transparency and we've operationalized that and we're in the process and we just met on wednesday to refine what we believe about um students and staff and our partners and so we'll have belief statements completed they're all around this notion of the first part of the mission statement education for all children we haven't got to the point of leadership and service and in mark you and some of you that were on the board will remember we struggled with that leadership and service because we weren't sure what it really meant when we revised this in 2015 but those are what your mission statement says and so um we can make those available um through leticia again for board members if they would like uh certainly and and you know they're i think through this process they're certainly open to supplementation this is nancy again if you can help us with the big rocks to start out with we can put together a template for you that takes channelers and some of the others components and have that framework i think that's what we were trying to accomplish david when we had this first item on the agenda and then we just continued to work through the process and you may at some point say in all of these discussions our mission doesn't match what we're trying to do here in the next five to ten years with advanced ed accreditation they ask you to review your vision of mission annually to just make sure we still are this is who we are and what we do and that's your vision and mission [Music] so in terms of the the pillars that there's more um they're the more like to discuss that any further in terms of how to organize you know what these pillars are going to be i mean i think we've had some you know heard some opinions about what they should be um other other other others that uh want to express with what they think that you know what these pillars should be to support the lower part of the strategic plan um if there is oh shelly hi yes this is shelley so i know we mentioned um various pillars but and we will expound on them but we do need to decide on maybe a name that would go along with those things um that we had mentioned before or do we need to discuss those things we've mentioned to be able to come up with the actual title of those pillars um in terms of the a name for the for the overall plan you mean i'm just wondering do you want us to kind of give some ideas of some exact pillars that we're thinking of academics related and things like that or general pillars i can't think of what we might title them but of course we definitely know the data that we need to be able to get to a certain point to be able to make those plans and make that strategic plan but i'm not sure if you're wanting like the actual naming of the pillars or the various ideas related to that i i would i would like you know your ideas on that um i know we've heard different ways to organize it and i think we at some point um you know should uh and again not not this meeting but at some point we'll need to uh identify them and we could do it a number of of different ways right we can have a you know an organizational excellence or service delivery um excellent type pillar that that could be it or we could have pillars based on you know the different modes of service delivery um it's really really what makes sense to us and what um would uh you know would fit you know our vision better that that's really what i'm trying to get to get some input on is how should we organize our you know our plan these kind of these big pillars so that we can then go back and look at some guiding principles or look at some you know visions under those pillars and then all of the data stuff we'll we'll look at you know the professional staff to help fill in those details linda speaking i wanted to ask annette got a question for now just want to make sure you can see me um i know i jumped in in the middle of things um but a thought occurred to me and then i know you've been working on um these different uh you know issues in the past and so i'm wondering if you've got that sort of outline i feel like maybe that's where we could start and then yeah if you recall um i had set up five strategic priorities yes exactly yes yeah um so what about those as a starting point yeah so i will and we can know what they are um the first one was communication and relationship building and the reason i set that up as priority one was because we really needed to re-gain trust there was a lot of distrust both in the agency and external to the agency so that was the first one communication and relationship building second was that the early learning and development really focusing on the yield to five and then third was academic achievement and family engagement which was 4k to 12 and then fourth was focusing on staff and leadership development in the agency we needed to develop more expertise more knowledge more skills and we needed to provide leadership training so that was the fourth one and then the fifth one was um resource resource allocation really looking at not just funding that's a critical piece but also facility personnel all of the resources we have that we can use to provide the best education and support possible so those were the five strategic priorities you can pick any of those you want you can completely change it you can follow the four pillar model from the chandler unified school district it's really up to you oh okay all right that sounds good and i'd this is okay i do think um there are pieces of that that we could use but i also think there are pieces of that that could be combined under one pillar and then maybe have some of those actually become some of the priorities or maybe even objectives or goals that we are trying to meet under those priorities um because i'm hearing bigger things like um [Music] stakeholder engagement i'm hearing academic and um student development i'm hearing professional development and retention those are some of the bigger things that i'm hearing out of what we're talking about and i don't know if we can use those as starting points in sort of fleshing out some of those pillars i it's okay this is david i think we think we can um you know in terms of the improving the the the organization and the staff that could be a pillar i mean just as we could say um you know service delivery or or skill development in the in the blind side we call it expanded common core right so that's that's what what mike was talking about before um i'm not sure if that's necessarily its own pillar or if that's uh something that um goes into you know providing the pillar of what we're doing for our students um and and maybe that's a subset of that and that's you know that that's really you know where i'm looking for input on but i think you're you know you're exactly right i mean those organizational goals are kind of you know one goal what do we do to improve the organization the effectiveness of the of the people who work for it um in addition to what are we doing for our students and and the students either you know again both the brick and mortar and in co-op and in early learning um and you know if those are our pillars then we can divide down into you know what specifically is it well we have again unlike you know ordinary you know school districts we you know we have a special student population they have they have certain needs and here's how we're going to you know here's how we're going to meet those days so it's okay again so i you know in my head i'm thinking effective resource management i'm thinking you know student development and excellence i'm thinking organizational culture and professional um development and retention i'm kind of drawing a blank at that point that's that's a great story linda's saying yes i totally agree with that that's a great start that's some good choices there for us to think about um i definitely like what i've seen and heard so far in this meeting tonight and i think um those five strategic plans really help guide us and you're right we do deal with students with special needs it's not like other schools and other districts so i definitely think using those five strategic plans and adjusting them and then moving forward from there rather than you know trying to reinvent the wheel i think that we've already had some good development in place that annette has already set in place and her she has already met with staff she's already been through a process and she's already presented them to us so i think that we could definitely use them to become maybe one or two of our pillars and i think that would be a great start and then of course there would be sub categories under those that we could use some of those strategic plans of course it's not going to happen overnight rome wasn't built in a day right it wasn't built overnight so we have to be realistic about it here and of course as the board coming together it's going to take time it's going to be a process but yeah i don't we don't want to be overloaded all at once with all of the decisions um that might be a bit tough but yeah um yeah i mean we wish for great things we wish for uh change to occur but we have to get something in place and we have to be realistic about it oh sorry i'll stop talking but um yeah everyone's you know everyone is just go ahead and jump in with your different ideas i mean this is how we're doing it i know it's a little bit awkward here on zoom but i'm just kind of throwing out my ideas right now yeah i mean we're all board members we all have you know different visions and ideas so we need to bring all of our thoughts together you know with one goal in mind we definitely need to do that and be able to make those adjustments and discuss you know what we like and we don't like about it and you know of course it's very important annette's input is extremely important she's out there we need information from the itinerant services we need information from all the different facets of the organization we need all the information to be able to come together and make these types of decisions and it's definitely hard for us especially individually yeah so it's it's tough um we need to develop a collective thought process of a collective board approach um to be able to you know serve our deaf and blind and visually impaired community this is shelley oh this is just my thoughts linda said so this is shelley um i'd like to make a comment did we decide actually how many pillars we were going to move forward with or does it not matter at this point i'm just are we doing four or five that would be one question and then i was thinking about um one definitely related to students uh i see some of the other ones like chandler unified they're just talking about outstanding students something along those lines um i'm not sure exactly maybe we might want to use a different word for that but and then of course we would have subcategories and include communication and effective communication and development and milestones and those types of things within that pillar and then someone else had mentioned i think chandler unified said it as well the organizational culture i think that one's important for the entire organization and that would apply to the to the entire organization as well um another one that i'm thinking about is something related to resources and making sure you know those honestly those three are what i'm thinking of at this point of course later down the line we likely could add more if need be and linda's saying three i think that's really a good start at this point i mean you know we could add down the line but i think that's a really great start yeah i mean and linda's still saying that um if anyone you know wants to go ahead and talk why is everyone so quiet right now anyone else have any comments or any anyone else have anything to say i'm just curious anyone else's thoughts here tonight this is sukay um i i and this might be under resource management it might be i i i also think we need to have some attention paid to and some um priorities as far as partnership development and stakeholder engagement whether that's parents whether that's other agencies but i do think that that that community piece needs to be part of this as well yeah i i certainly agree i mean how the agency relates to you know not just the the students but the parents and the other school districts i mean that's that's really important that we have good relationships with uh you know that again the school districts in the in the co-ops but then also the school districts that place students in in the brick and mortar school so you know we need to be sure that we're you know we're serving that that's the holder group as well and and just to tag on to that david i would also include those people that we are contracting with to provide some of those fill in some of those gaps that we are not currently able to provide to students we need to make sure that we are maintaining good relationships there as well and continuing to expand and develop as we need to fill other gaps i i certainly agree and and to shelly's point i don't think we're set on the number of pillars really i mean it's you know i think if it's four or five that's fine i mean you know two is probably too little and ten is probably too much but um at least from my view anyway there's there's not a i don't think there's a right number david this is nancy so what's bubbling up just to kind of help you um frame this is that we we have this one pillar and that is called communication and relationships but that's your partnership so we can define that but for now it's really how you communicate and that came up real clearly when i asked you at your last session what was one as burning issues is the word that i use so this communication building relationships talks about how we work with parents how we communicate how we do that piece of the bill and it it honors also that social and emotional peace that we need to have with our partnerships then we have another piece that's really bubbling up and that's about supporting students that it's more than just achievement but it's it's giving those supports and how do we know we do that well that's our job to come back and say here's how we can tell you we support our students and measure that we're doing a better and better job of it it can be through satisfaction surveys student achievement data a whole host of things then you have this other bubble up as organizational culture and that's where you can put in that outstanding world-class employees in your organizational culture you have to value your employees you have to recruit them you've got to train them you've got to keep them so that they can then help you build that communication and the student development and in the fourth one and and it's almost in every strategic plan is that resource management because if you are really looking at a strong accountability system that a strategic plan demands you're going to have to look at your resources and are you allocating it to in that particular area if you want to really build your student development is that where your resources are being allocated so they they're all a jigsaw that fits into a puzzle but they stand alone when it comes to reporting back and that's a little bit different than the washington plan the big hairy audacious goal you can have if you want and that can be dreaming where we want to be in um um five ten five ten years mark said it the best i even wrote it down when he talks about the the banner that's um i had a school that talks about how many um um help me mark uh nope nobel laureates okay thank you i just kind of lost the word and things and you know so you can have we can get that too you know to help people get jazzed up and excited about strategic plans and those types of things to say down the road and then this is how we're going to get there and we're going to do it through really having those relationships in the communication is one pillar we're going to do it by really supporting our students and whatever they need we're going to do it with resource management we're going to do it with a really strong organizational culture that values the employees and the work that we do and so that's what i'm hearing so far i think it's really good summary of the discussion nancy um linda yes david um so i'm listening to nancy that um just brought to mind the technologies um that you know we're looking at in the future we're already depending heavily on technology particularly during covid and so i think that um making sure that we indicate our our need and desire to keep up with technology and potentially expanding in that area for both teachers and students you know they've had to learn on the fly in a lot of cases how to use the internet well and how to use that resource well and then also using research to inform our decisions as technology changes and as as our environment changes we need to keep an eye on that and make sure that we're making appropriately informed decisions as we expand in areas like technology so maybe under organizational culture maybe i don't know sure i think go ahead but um i think you're absolutely right i mean as technology evolves when we use it in so many ways i just think of you know the ways that you know blind visually impaired people used uh you know apple iphones and things like that as screen readers and things that weren't even available um well they were available 10 years ago but they might have cost thousands of dollars instead of you know just an iphone um which which is still expensive but you know not thousands of thousands of dollars um so you know to to me uh i think that's a great point i mean i think that is part of our service delivery is how to use those tools um both the assistive technology piece of it uh but also the virtual learning piece of it where where that makes sense and i think we're you know a lot more comfortable doing that now post covert than we were um you know a year ago and that's and that's a good thing i mean i think we can use this even on an ongoing basis so you know to me that's part of the effect of service delivery um and in some cases it also conserves resources so it almost does double dude david i put triple duty i think it does the student development it does with the organizational culture and supporting those teachers and the training that's needed for that and it does in resource management so those are then what we and and that's a really good point when we come back with a draft we may have forgotten technologies and only put it in for student achievement and assistive technologies and you as a collective group help us filter through and say did you think about this what about this it may not be we're year one but this is a long a strategic plan this is our roadmap of where we want to be in the next um five years and the number of priorities we do know if you get over five it's hard to manage them in in i mean i don't know why i know that so i don't really know that that's a fact but when you just think logically having too many um plates spinning some are going to fall through so if we could do really well our communication and our relationships and we all knew what that was and we all knew what it looked like and when somebody goes to lynn and says you know they're just not communicating with me you can with confidence say have you seen their newsletter have you seen their um survey when they ask for your input have you seen you know you will know exactly what we're doing in order to build those relationships and improve communications when we have student development and we certainly will have achievement data but we'll have other things that measure your student population and how they've developed opportunities anecdotal as well as um quantitative data and then the the culture that one's almost it seems more nebulous but almost easier to measure because it's teacher turnover it's staff satisfaction it's um you know you do a good job with the organizational culture and your kids are going to develop better you know all of those things are interrelated and you have to have the money so how are we going to just allocate our resources as effectively and as efficiently as possible uh all right are there is there any more discussion on the the pillars uh themselves no okay um nancy then if perhaps we can move to the next uh the next agenda item the filling in the areas for the next meeting so we've talked about a lot here and if we could agree that we're going to start you eventually will formally approve the plan but if we agree right now we're going to start and we look at these four pillars your homework assignment would be for the next um the next piece is to do a lot of what you've already done what i i want to measure this i want you to think about this i want when we and so we're now really operationalizing these four pillars of what you would like to see you won't do the work but we might not have the data but it's really then starting for you to think in these four areas how would i know with confidence that we're making progress and what would it what would students be doing what would parents be doing what would staff be doing it's those types of things so if we can get you a framework um tomorrow that has your vision and mission and our guiding principles and has the asdb with these four pillars you can look at the names and you can then start saying okay that they call them guiding principles that they want to integrate 21st century competencies through learning you may not get down to that detail but you might say something to the effect of i want all of our kids to be prepared to go into the workforce and if that's what at one of the indicators of student development means to you then you've brought those ideas and you've had time to think about them you might not know enough about communication and relationships so they might be questions how do you currently talk with districts how do you currently talk with parents how do um you know what it is and it's just more i i don't know enough but i wonder about this is what i would like to know and that's what we can then build into the plan so that's what i had in mind david as our next steps if you um and then we that gives us from october 1st until november 5th to start really getting into the meat of things it won't be a finalized plan but it'll be enough so that we all are shaking in our heads that yep this is the clear direction we want as an agency coming from the board level and then that gives us until j at the january meeting we would have you adopted and that would be a plan for 2021 through 2026.

to create an optimal learning environment for our students i continue to commit to protecting and enhancing our learning environment through support through supporting research-based innovation for teaching and learning i will always go the extra mile in what i do as a currently seated board member i'm afforded extensive knowledge regarding our district i desire to use my cumulative board experience coupled with my experiences as a ccusd mom as a blueprint it is essential to improve upon the percentage of students in each school meeting or exceeding expectations in all core curricular areas additionally i support the social emotional components of our children that you will entrust me with another opportunity to serve as your advocate for an additional term on the ccusd school board thank you thank you mr fortney your response thank you all for being here tonight thanks to the ib students and their teachers for putting this event together it's an honor to be part of it my name is jeff fortny i'm a long time cave creek resident father grandfather and educator and i'm proud to be running for cave creek school board i've lived here since 1999 and one of the reasons that we moved here was because of the schools my son graduated from cactus shadows in 2003 and my grandson is going to be going to become a desert willow road runner soon i've been teaching special edge since starting right here in cave creek at desert willow and sonoran trails this is work that i still do but i do it at a different district now so that allows me to be able to run for this position and give back to the community that i've loved for 20 years cave creek is my home it's my future and it's my family's future that's my stake in this race back in 2004 i i started a second career i was a systems programmer with a desire to do something that was more important i was drawn to working with students with special needs and have not regretted that decision for a second i remember back on my first day on the job i was under the table with a third grader with autism helping him do his uh spelling test i was writing the answers on the top bottom of the board the desk that we were under that was my start today i was helping third and fourth graders working turn their tiny little sentences into big expansive sentences using adjectives and adverbs and personal experience and we did it virtually that's that's kind of how things have gone over the last 17 years i have taken whatever challenge has been thrown at me and sometimes in special ed that is a literal statement and i've done the best that i can for my students and my families this is the same persistence and tenacity that i will bring to the school board thank you thank you your response mr rich thank you students ladies and gentlemen i've been involved in the district for seven years now and i'm serving in my first term as a board member i want to take this take this time to clarify something there are three candidates running as a team against three other candidates myself being one of the quote unquote others because of this there's a narrative out there that the other three therefore our team as well i just want to assure you i'm simply running for re-election period i'm not running as a member of a team whomever you relax so be it i can work with any of them over the past four years i've been able to work with members of two different boards both those i agree and disagree with and there's a lot of relationship building that needs to occur in this district after this election between the board the incoming superintendent the teachers and the community people who know me know me to be respectful of others whether i agree with them or not is my goal to be a bridge between our various stakeholders in democracy in america the tocqueville stated that america's strength comes from our local community institutions it seems that now these institutions need us to strengthen them i promise you that will be my focus thank you ms thatcher your response good evening my name is terry thatcher first and foremost i want to thank the interla international baccalaureate program students and instructors for putting on this great event thank you to the ccosd governing board superintendent debbie burdick administrators teachers staff students and community for attending in person and can collectively communicate market negotiate and drive ccusd to be at the top of all school districts in the state i have always been able to contribute to agreements that benefit from both sides of the table as the daughter of a small business owner i experienced firsthand the importance of community relationships as a community members we must demand transparency establishing and identifying the best use of funds translates into transparency ensuring fiscal responsibility as it relates to teachers students classrooms and schools will enhance the academic growth of our students additionally this will create a pathway to provide the necessary resources to compensate teachers in fun classrooms adequately as well as acquire the essential instructional tools to support student engagement effectively tonight you will hear from all candidates this will be a great night a night of celebratory accomplishments and a night for our stakeholders to hear firsthand about each and every one i asked that tonight that you listen and hear from me firsthand i am a community member just as you are i am a parent just as you are and my family means the most importance to me as i'm sure to you i ask for your respect and consideration to hear me tonight and who i am thank you thank you ms walker your response hi my name is brianna walker and thank you to everybody that put this on i've been in this facility many times it's one of my favorites on campus and i'm not one that likes the stage so i'm used to being behind the scenes but this is a change and i know how much work goes into it so i appreciate that i am a mother of four children all of them attending schools in the district and i have three at black mountain and one at sonoran trails my husband and i have been doing life in cave creek for 14 years so we started coming to church out here and doing preschool out here and made it our home since 2011 and we just really love being here i'm an arizona native so i've been here my entire life and i've seen arizona change a lot i have a global business degree from asu with a marketing concentration and to me that really brings something different to the table as well um i've worked in the car industry i've worked in real estate and having being able to understand finance and budget i understand leasing and amortization i feel like that brings a lot when funding and budgets are on everybody's forefront right now currently i work in the i.t industry that industry is fast paced and it requires a lot of future proofing and planning as well i come from a family of educators although i'm not an educator myself my father-in-law had this as his career my brother-in-law and my sister are both educators in the state of arizona so i do bring that background as well and i think why teachers get into it is because they do it for the kids and that is my biggest stake for doing it i mean i have four kids in the district and i think that support is important from our community thank you thank you miss wilson your response thank you good evening first i'd like to thank jessica and nicole for inviting me to this governing board forum i would also like to say what a privilege it is to be sitting next to these five exceptional uh candidates my name is trinity wilson wecker my family and i are fairly new to the community we landed in cave creek along after a long and exhausting search excuse me after a long exhausting search for our new chapter and we couldn't be happier the reason it took us several years to find this little nugget of a town is that we had a long list of boxes to check off the most important box pertain to school districts after researching ccusd my husband and i were beyond excited the facilities were impeccable books and resources were available plethora of activities for kids and hands down two of the most monumental teachers i've ever come across if only we could clone these two rare specimens of educators every child in this district would get the same rare and special educational experience my two boys received last year i still have little ones wild boys eight and five years old by the time high school rolls around i want to see cactus shadows as one of arizona's top schools and ccusd as number one district in the state some of you might not think this is unattainable however i disagree with vision and determination all of our hopes and goals can be reached with our children succeed when our children succeed through education they will prosper on many levels when our district triumphs in comparison to neighboring districts our community also prospers the contagion effect our success has and our district as our district touches everyone in this room and more thank you great thank you now we will begin question number one why did you decide to run for the governing board and how would you use your board position to promote our district ms geiselhofer representing candidate busby your response this might be the easiest and my favorite question because the answer is simple i am a proud creaker and i consider serving on the board and representing all of you one of the greatest privileges the reality is the face of education is changing at a rapid pace with the norm or standard was five years ago is no longer adequate we do not seek to prepare today's students but rather to develop tomorrow's global leaders if re-elected as a member of the governing board i can use my knowledge and board experience to ensure that the children of our district are prepared to be leaders as both consumers and producers of knowledge it is my goal that the curriculum and the standards for our district continue to exceed our state and national standards we are a community that supports academic excellence ccusd can and should be the top district in the state and i hope to serve you to promote that goal for ccusd thank you candidate fortney your response i'm running because i've been an advocate for public education for years now i've been involved in making sure that taxpayer dollars that you're marked for public schools actually make it there i've been monitoring and promoting good pro-education legislation and candidates on both sides of the aisle and calling out bad moves by our legislature but being on the school board that's direct involvement that's why i wanted to do that and i strongly believe that educators need to be on school boards they need to be directly involved in the decisions that are being made that affect the classroom in the community the perspective and input of someone actually working in the classroom especially now is vital to a well-informed board how do i want to promote this district well i want to make sure that every stakeholder here realizes that this was the destination district for both teachers and families it was where people wanted to be it's still an amazing district but we are losing out on educators that want to have better pay and families that are looking for better programs and diversity i want to make sure our community understands the gem that we have here whether they have students or never had students here i am this is about promoting our district as the source of better home values and more importantly as a secure source for more powerful and robust cave creek future thank you candidate rich your response thank you i started as a classroom volunteer and then became involved in district level committees to include the 2015 bond committee that's when i first started thinking about the governing board i decided to run in 2016 because of the knowledge and experience i had gained and it was important to me to know what curriculum was being taught to my children in 2020 i'm running for reelection because as a cc usd parent i'm only halfway through my commitment to the district my family is going to stay here until my youngest child graduates one way or another i'm going to be as involved as i can be in the district whether i'm on the board or not but on the board is where i can make the greatest impact as i mentioned earlier relationships in the community need to be rebuilt and i have learned that i have the trust of this community many people contacted me earlier this year to make sure i was running again they know that agree or disagree with me they can trust that their voice will be heard and understood and they know i have the best interest of the students in mind thank you thank you candidate thatcher your response and why you decided to run for the governing board and how you promote our district thank you my decision to run for the governing board is that i am a community member a parent and a neighbor i am an advocate for teachers classified staff administrators and students that bring about a positive deposition of our schools our community and our future the essentials of promoting a district is being factual data driven and transparent we have the community and the functionality to bring all stakeholders to be involved and as a governing board member my position is to do that from 40th street east to rio verde from jomax north to tatum ranch cave creek and carefree we must engage our neighbors our community as we manage with our teachers or engage with our teachers schools and children because we are ccusd and we matter thank you canada walker your response this is probably the easiest question for me as well um having four children in the district definitely gives you an instant interest in your schools he is able to meet those um so that really getting involved in different things that they're involved in has been a reason for us to be here and for me to get unique that we have five elementary schools that all specialize in different programs that's unique our staff is unique we have some of the most award-winning teachers for how small our district is and that is something that i think instantly brings people to the community as well thank you candidate wilson your response thank you another story for a different time but after the battle to win our preschool teacher's job back i was approached about the possibility to run for a seat on the governing board in this upcoming election i'm a fair person i don't back down i fight for what's right and i would never stop fighting for my children or yours i help those who can't help themselves and it's difficult for me to sit back and watch when i have the time and adherence to make a difference as a board member i will nurture the line of communication between district and community ccusd should be obligated to full transparency with families and residents the feedback from locals has been a range of mixed emotion i would like to win the trust and respect of the community we serve initiate transparency and i'm confident that the community support will follow moving forward we need to innovative ideas from parents teachers students and community members all hands on deck approach to obtain our district schools it took a lot of blood sweat and tears to get here and it's not over yet there's a long road ahead of us yet here we all are willing to dedicate our lives to the cause i promise to put my heart and soul into the position thank you thank you we will now move on to question two what are your top three priorities or concerns that you would work on as a board member and we will begin with mr fortney you know first i would work on making sure that we have a stronger connection between the community and the district i work to make sure that the community understands the importance of school bonds and overrides if we want to be that destination district we have to make sure our district is receiving the funds that it needs it needs the resources to challenge our students and empower our teachers and their desire to properly educate cave creek students next i want to make sure that our teachers are treated as the respected professionals that they are they need to be heard and represented in what they need to need to teach their students they need a voice they need they need to have a voice heard by the school board members and what resources they require to do their jobs i would also advocate on finding ways to more appropriately pay our teachers and classified staff because if you want to be the destination district you have to make the journey worthwhile finally i want to make sure that the district is funded as effectively as possible we live in the district with the highest property values in the state that makes us a non-state aided district money collected by cave crete from cave creeks and taxpayers is immediately leaving cave creek for other districts that needs to change as someone who has been actively involved with monitoring and education legislation and interacting with legislatures i will work to get this done for the benefit of cave creek schools thank you mr rich thank you very simply i would say curriculum superintendent search and the covet issue and i would add the fourth would be budgeting which is covered on another question as i stated earlier the reason i ran in 2016 is because i wanted to be in a position to monitor and approve the curriculum and i like to ask parents and students to help with that issue as well the best way that the board can be made aware of curriculum issues is if we receive notice from you along with any documentation or evidence you might have of any complaints you might have second the superintendent search is currently ongoing and it will take up a lot of our attention our schedule of meetings is double what it was previously hopefully we can keep our timeline the superintendent we hire has big shoes to fill we need someone savvy and inspiring as well as experienced the process continues in a week or so when the board looks at the applications we've received i want to thank everyone in the community that filled out the survey the consultant that we're using said it was one of the largest responses he'd ever seen third the covid issue of course is a moving target and communication is the key right now hopefully we can make it through with minimal health issues all we can do is maintain what we've been doing and follow protocols and monitor the updates from the state and uh hopefully by the time we graduate the school year will be mask free thank you thank you miss thatcher your response yes my three top priorities and concerns that i would address as a board member is transparency we have many stakeholders that we must bring back to our community that have a voice no one should ever be left behind a child an adult a student a teacher a staff member an administrator and so on we walk beside one another we speak of our area with the utmost highest regard that we bring about transparency of our funding academics athletics arts vocational instruction clubs and retention of great teachers in addition clear vision is one that sets a vision and goals that measure the success of the district and superintendent using quali quantitative measures that show quality integrity and goals showing the greatness of our district and that we have measures in place to meet as such focus on the best of all of our students we have approximately 4 900 students within seven brick and mortar schools and one online school students need to be put first we need subject matter experts smes as they're called and our students are just that they are experts in their own account and we need to shine that glow as to how our students are because of how great our teachers are thank you thank you ms walker your response my three priorities are student retainment teacher retainment and special education student retainment being of where we live the majority of families in our district have the privilege of going to a local charter school or private school and this directly affects the budget our budget is set up based on how many kids we have within the district so in order to retain that and keep our budget growing we need to keep attracting people to stay within the district i know we've lost a lot of people this year with coven and then also the same goes with teachers we need to retain our teachers i hope that i could be a voice for the teachers and kind of build that bridge as well um as much as we all want our kids in school it doesn't work if we don't have teachers to teach our kids so um having a balance and being a voice for both the community and the kids and also our teachers is important to me lastly special education i have a child in special ed and navigating an iep is something in itself to me that is very important and just making sure that that percent of our community that their needs are met we have 12 uh 13 actually of our students fall in that category so that's a large number thank you thank you miss wilson your response i would like to push for an internal audit as we advance towards a new superintendent i think it's crucial we start fresh and have complete transparency of funds having an audit rendered will allow the district to revisit funding allocations and we would have a clear understanding of all financial transactions recruiting and retaining exceptional teachers is a must teachers have the ultimate influence over our students and educational process in hiring the best of the best teachers we need to cultivate a district that appeals to them let the teachers know the district is on their side pushing for higher salaries and incentives providing a support system encouraging communication and maintaining a safe work space so educators can do their job successfully enrolling students should be top priority throughout the district and faculty it's up to everyone to promote ccusd spread the word amongst the community to join the ccusd family and reassure parents they are making the smart choice enrolling in our district thank you thank you ms geiselhofer representative candidate busby my top three priorities are simple education innovation and collaboration first education we must attract and retain the best teachers to provide the best education for all students this means creating an inclusive learning environment where all students from all backgrounds at all levels feel welcomed and valued second is innovation more accurately disruptive innovation having the courage to think outside the box shake things up and try things that haven't been tried before based on research based on best practice and willing to do whatever it takes to meet the needs of our learners as well as our educators and third we must utilize the power of collaboration our stakeholders are valuable assets and cannot and should not be overlooked ultimately we all have a common goal we seek to provide outstanding education for the students in our schools and as your board member my number one priority is not just for me to project your voice but also to give you opportunities to use it for yourselves voting for me is voting for we thank you we will now move to question number three there are times when people share the same goals but do not agree on how to achieve them how would you handle situations if other board members or district administrators did not agree with you we will begin with candidate rich thank you my previous statements have touched on this i would be able to work with everyone the key is free exchange of ideas as long as everyone gets to express their ideas or concerns then it's up to them to articulate their positions effectively so that the board can then discuss and then we hold a vote once each member votes and if there's a majority that becomes the board's vote that's the final vote there have been some disagreements amongst board members recently and uh curiously for some reason uh there are reasoning it has not been articulated fully and i have an example this happened during the recent meeting two members of the board uh kennedy running for re-elections one of them wanted to table the search for a new superintendent it's one of the most important decisions we have to make and it could take up to a six-month process and yet there was no reasoning given for why these members would want to delay the process and presumably wait until next year i would like to hear some uh transparency to use a word that we're hearing a lot tonight uh just to hear the reasoning behind that so that the the board can uh more fully explore to the question thank you thank you candidate thatcher your response in life we face many challenges that we may not all agree on however we can collectively come together and be united to achieve goals the goals that one member may have could very well be the same goal that another member may have but it could be written differently based off of our collaboration of collective value of goals and how they are presented it is imperative to listen to one another ask questions effectively communicate how we take these goals and mold them into one of the betterments of our schools our teachers our families our students our community and our future is for ccusd we need to come together and be one no longer should we be divided we need to stand united thank you thank you candidate walker your response the first part's easy if we share the same goal we've already won as far as how to get there i think that just takes a lot of listening and humility getting people on the same page is usually the hardest task i hope i am very decisive i hope that as a board member everybody would show up and be prepared and that they have done their due diligence so they can vote i also um believe that if i've done my due diligence i'm going to stand firm on what i believe is right for the district and that i mean that is the beauty of having five members we might not always agree but we all bring something different to the table recently i've seen in board meetings that some candidates have chosen to abstain their vote it's your job as an elected i understand that it's unpaid and it's nonpartisan but it's you're elected to vote so the abstain the vote i have a really hard time with that and hopefully if elected we won't have anybody further abstaining their vote thank you thank you candidate wilson your response on how you would handle situations if other board members did not agree with you thank you as humans we will naturally disagree and have opposite opinions many of us in this room and sitting at this table have very different views whatever your views may be i would never attack you for your stance or personal choices not all individuals can handle themselves with poise that being said i can tell you how i wouldn't conduct myself for example it's disheartening that currently here at ccusd there are administrators that have been online adult bullying through social media myself and others sitting at this table in hopes of damaging our reputations it frightens me that these administrators feel the need to stoop solo and project such negativity in our district i want my children to grow up respecting others and their peers how else will our students learn unless we lead by example how will we accomplish our goals and move forward if we as adults can't find common ground to work together for the greater good i can see all sides of the cube i would be honored to have the opportunity to work beside my fellow board members and sift through our differences for the best possible outcome people have to remember this is about kids not us thank you thank you miss geiselhofer representing candy candidate busby your response thank you for the great question and i appreciate that you started the question by acknowledging a shared vision and mission that's powerful i believe that we all want what's best for our students and for our community we may vary on ways we believe are the best approach to get there but operating with that shared vision will help get through those harder times and those difficult conversations while everyone might not agree it's essential to listen and understand one another's point of view the objective is not to change someone's opinion completely instead to take a step back and to look at all points of view set aside personal bias and learn and grow together through multiple lenses and perspectives allowing for open dialogue will create a climate of brainstorming that can culminate in ideas that were not initially considered but hopefully result in a cohesive roadmap to our end goal i hope to contribute to creating and cultivating a safe and warm environment where open communication is valued nurtured and encouraged thank you candidate fortney your response well being a member of the school board is to understand that you are part of a collective voice this should not be an us against them environment this is all parties working together for the benefit of the students and the teachers in the community to that end i intend to make sure that i come prepared for every single board meeting no exceptions and no excuses next i will never disparage the superintendent or my fellow board members the reputation of the district is shown on how we work together with each other for the good of the district i will do my due diligence on my school board homework and research i will try to invest to express my views to the best of my ability and show that it is with what i believe is the best for the classroom in the community and i will stress that my position is coming from that of an educator currently working within the realm of the classroom if the board majority or superintendent disagrees with my position i will continue to work to gain their understanding and of of what my stance is and as best as possible present a united front then i would vote based on my work and respect and accept the board's final vote thank you we will now move on to question number four given the current fiscal challenges district schools face the reality of having to make serious budget cuts next year how would you prioritize limited funding for items such as class size teacher salaries school closures programs such as sports and the arts if you would eliminate one or more programs which would they be we will begin with mrs thatcher thank you funding is the backbone of our schools the need for a positive approach as to why there have been budget cuts in the past is essential this does not mean we are predicting the future that we will be having further budget cuts we need to look at the who what where when and how these cuts have happened and what can be done to fix this we cannot bandage cuts we need to pull back the books and look at the root cause of the matter of why this is happening in our district we have resources within the community that we as the neighbors can utilize they are in our backyards our teachers deserve better pay our student students deserve those teachers that have the resources and programs to educate no one program or school should be cut or closed all programs and schools are the building block for a student's future an effective board is held accountable that they are seeing that schools programs arts athletics etc are on track for positive impact for our community and stakeholders as a board member we have the fiduciary responsibility to our community and to ccusd thank you thank you we will now move on to ms walker thank you first of all i don't i would i don't see how we could eliminate anything i would eliminate nothing we operate very lane um we don't have assistant principals our ratio of students to counselors is very high our sports are all paid for by dues food and transportation should be break even as far as the arts this building is self-funding so i could not eliminate anything we have a problem if we do need to make cuts i keep hearing transparency with the budget the budget is public so you can read the whole 20 page budget and see where everything goes so i have a hard time with transparency with the budget since it is public public record in the district um so i would have a hard time cutting anything um that's it that's all i have to say about that thank you ms wilson your response as a business owner i know the difficulties of cutting costs to accurately answer these questions first we have to ask for the bottom line so we can understand our expenditures post audit where would the numbers leave us financially what will our budget look like next year how is the donation money being distributed last year the district acquired over a million dollars in private donations is it all accounted for without compiling all the data data we only have a fraction of all the overall picture for these reasons is necessary and urgent to implement transparency i also want to be clear that i stand strongly for not eliminating any programs quite the opposite i want to know what programs we are going to add that's how we are all going to enroll new students for our future we live in an affluent area these fiscal challenges should not exist and if these problems do exist then we need to get our budget under control furthermore don't the parents pay for most of the sports programs i'd like to see ccusd build a better sports grant sports program for girls and boys across the board and i want to reiterate no programs or schools should be compromised we need to start thinking differently thank you ms geiselhofer representing candidate busby thank you this question is easier addressed through an asset versus a deficit approach simply stated all students are important therefore so are all programs while the budget discussions are not always easy they are essential the tier method that the district has used in the past to make budget decisions has achieved what was intended the budget was reduced identified expenses have either been eliminated or reduced it's not all doom and gloom we need to find ways to redistribute funding not cut it but to allocate it in different ways to best support our teachers students community and programs when it comes to developing strategies for funding classrooms there needs to be more dialogue that involves teachers ptos administration and relevant shared stakeholders because the teachers are in the classroom they need to have input as to how the funding will impact the integrity of their classrooms the teachers voices need to be heard it's not about cutting programs it's about redistributing thank you mr fortney your response this is such an important question and one that was echoed during my interview with the cave creek education association to be able to sit here and say i've already decided what needs to be cut would be uh really putting a discount to this question it's not it's not taking the community into account the results of that superintendent survey reflected a community that wants to be heard and represented i've been calling for representation for all of ccusd stakeholders for over a year students who want a voice parents teachers and community members this would be a critical area for community feedback and input so to answer the question i would be hesitant to predetermine for a predetermined answer of what i would eliminate but i would definitely go on record as saying teacher salaries and class sizes are untouchable we already have are in difficult position because of those things and taking more drastic cuts there would be very detrimental to the district and the same for the arts and sports programs sometimes that is the reason that some kids come to schools so when the time comes i feel that it would be appropriate for different scenarios to be brought before the board for their for consideration and then i would vote on what would be best for the classroom in the community or at least what would be the least worst thanks thank you mr rich your response thank you uh just to clarify our our budget is a uh a matter of public record the school district is a public entity and uh so the budget is audited it is uh transparent i think the uh the issue is our district is in a really tough spot and it was mentioned earlier about the fact that our taxpayers pay not only for our school district but they pay a separate education tax that's taken by the state and redistributed to other school districts throughout the state and yet we do not have enough funding ourselves we've been able to make it through each year though for various reasons finding funding from various sources next year there's going to be a override considered and that's going to be entirely up to the voters it's going to be up to the administration a new superintendent the board to communicate the need for that to the taxpayers as far as making any cuts i would say that we would probably continue with what we have done in the past where each school in a district and each program makes their own cuts within their own budget therefore we don't have to actually cut an entire program or school just to tell you some things that are happening currently i know that there's no overtime authorized there's no spending outside of health and safety reasons other than anything that gets approved directly by the executive team thank you thank you we will now move to question number five arizona schools have been facing a teacher shortage over the past five years primarily because ccusd salaries are lower than neighboring districts now over 300 teachers statewide have retired or resigned due to covert 19.

pledge i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all thank you similar to other meetings where we've had a board member not able to attend and they've been uh here by zoom we have mr hubbard today by zoom so when we call the votes i'll call votes for first for everyone in the room and then after that we'll uh we'll call a separate vote for for mr hubbard so let's start off with the agenda has everybody had the opportunity to take a look at the agenda and as anybody is hereby adopted next we have a special presentation from one of our favorite groups the red alert robotics team so we'll turn the floor over lisa uh thorad i think you have a statement to make on the behalf i'm gonna let our student leaders here make that statement for us if that's okay nothing personal but we always love to hear from the students we thank you uh hi i'm jacob coleman and i'm the executive captain of our robotics team i'm joined with uh isabella baxter she's our operations captain and i've got bruno foreign we basically just want to thank you guys for your support we were able to achieve a lot last season even though our season got tough short it was not to the degree we expected it would be obviously but we achieved a lot because we want to thank even though we our competitions actually got cancelled you're able to go along with the judging crash list through zoom and we actually won tournaments which is the highest award that we interviewed [Music] mug and uh just some things about our team and if you have any questions or want to give a shot our website is right alert1741.org that's awesome who what's the what's the prognosis on the upcoming season we just got an email about an hour ago that it's a little up in the air okay um the big challenge is signing babies because most schools don't want to say sure you can cover gym without a thousand people here as we can understand so that's there we're they're looking at doing some modifications looking at different kinds of competitions that we might be able to do virtually science competitions outreach competitions so we're being creative they're being created on a national level um but it hadn't had it not been for coded we would have been to worlds this year in august due to chairman so we're real proud of all them you could not do without your support so thank you for that so we don't know exactly to be honest right no it's okay there's a lot of that right now i didn't know if you guys have gotten any anything until last week it was going to be fairly normal for us the other teams were going to be virtual now we're carrying maybe not just because they can't find facilities is our biggest challenge that sounds like right now that could change and things could change at the school student they're like oh okay we're good you can have it in april now so right now we're just planning all kinds of virtual things we're meeting still every week you [Music] so in 16 years yeah so cameras are still going to happen this year with room calls updated live it was pretty much equivalent to what it was in person it's pretty professional and it's utter stance they had all of the judges zooming in and building them from our own homes and we were able to share all of our like they had all of our fundraising so from i guess a cup half hole no one wants to but you've got a new skill yeah zoom now yeah definitely good lighting and all you got [Music] some people agree something will go wrong just plan these guys are just playing about this season yeah well what happened right so if something breaks and something goes wrong and once it's not too bad it's a good story exactly that's right absolutely but we're very proud they've all stepped up nobody wants to do really um so we weren't able to get into facility obviously for about four or five months so then a spirit was in the refrigerator um i do not mr hubbard do you have any other questions i know your remote mr hubbard's always a supporter he always comes i have no questions all right thank you all right we just wanted to share it and so we ordered extra medals for you all oh well thank you thank you very much very nice thank you so much thank you so much well photoshop put the tall guy in front of rob yeah there you go everybody smile all right thank you so much thank you very much thank you guys that's great um next is our time for public comments no one has signed up for public comments so we'll move to the next agenda item next on the agenda are consent items everyone's received their consent packets does anybody have any questions on any of the items in the consent package hearing no questions do i hear a motion mr president i know that we accept the consent agenda as presented do i hear a second second thank you mr alexander mrs toomey all those in favor of the consent items please signify by saying i mr hubbard i all those opposed signify by saying aye hearing no no opposed 5-0 the consent items are adopted now we go to our action items our first action item is to uh i'll turn over to dr bill long to consider the student behavioral health services agreement thank you dr long thank you good evening tonight we're asking the board to approve an agreement with community health network to provide mental health services to our students in the school system and part of this agreement requires or says community health will provide two master's prepared therapists and one lifestyle life skills clinician by having master's prepared therapists they can work with kids with on medicaid or with private insurance and just so far since we've been back to school we've had um about 169 kids referred already and they're in the process of doing the intake for them all and to start working with them so that part's gone really well this agreement is just for one year starting july 1st of 2020 and ending on june 30th of 2021 and the reason for that is i think mr taylor is working on a a master agreement between the school corporation and community health that would incorporate this into that master agreement the reason we're bringing this to the board tonight is because of the dollar amount that we're paying to get the program started is over fifty thousand dollars and we're required uh to have the board approve those agreements um i'd be happy to answer any questions that you might have i would it's interesting to note that the one therapist that started with us actually lived in the center grove district so she was right across the street from pleasant grove so she was really excited to to start working with us and we've been really happy i know heather's been really happy and we've had lots of conversations about how this will work in our schools and our counselors are making referrals our parents are making referrals so really think especially in the year with covet and after last year how important this is for us to have a licensed therapist to to work with our students well the one thing i'm glad we're doing this ahead and not waiting on getting the rest of the agreement in place i know we were trying to get that done but i'll be able to pull this piece out and go ahead and move forward yeah thank you okay and i think your point's well taken when kids these ages have enough challenges let alone an issue with are they going to be learning are they going to be hybrid are they going to be traditional you know the fact that we've got a 169 referrals i think you know is a is a victory because those are 169 kids that some of them wouldn't have otherwise gotten any kind of help right so thank your groups that community health and everybody else trying to fill this gap that was out there and hopefully you know come next year we need the full agreement sure for consideration but thanks do i hear any other comments with respect to the community health and mental health proposal hearing no other questions and comments do i hear a motion i move that we approve the letter agreement with community health network for the behavioral health services do i hear a second second thank you mr alexander mrs tooby all those in favor of the behavioral health um agreement with community health services for 2020 to 2021 from july 1 2014 to july 31 2021 please signify by saying i mr halbert for sure opposed to hearing no one opposed the eyes out at 5-0 thank you dr thank you thank you next we're going to the school improvement plans and mrs nora hoover will be presenting tonight so mrs hoover the walk didn't used to be as long and we all could sit up here today though thank you speaker i'll turn the microphone over to you thank you i'm per indiana code you see me standing here over here in front of you because all public schools must annually submit a school improvement plan i'm also per indiana state board of education rules the plans must be submitted to and approved by the governing body prior to that submission the applicable legal standard requires that each school submit their full revised three-year school improvement plan and all of our schools will need to do that no later than october 2nd the indiana school improvement plan process is part of a the striving for continual improvement in our schools to be effective the plan should be reviewed as a living document evolving as circumstances change during a three-year period covered by that year's submission each of our school has reviewed and considered any available assessment data and revise their school plan to reflect the building needs of the students there this year and the student achievement goals for each building is the basis for their strategies professional development throughout the year and so our schools um these updated versions you have um they used the best data they had because of course we didn't have standardized testing last spring um they did fall back to you know what they what they did know but we also likely have nwea and also we could use our essential learning data from our professional learning communities from those grade level teams and with all of that knowledge um they plan all their professional development and staff development for the year based on that to meet these goals thank you mr you're welcome do i have any comments or questions from any board members i think just uh as i was looking through and there was a lot of information there um the one thing that really jumped out at me and it was actually i didn't read all 31 pages but it was the very first it was on page one the sat scores have increased on the map steadily every year and we started at 5 24 in 2014-15 up to 5.85 and 19-20 and that's in my mind that's a pretty significant increase in a in a five-year time span that's that's true and i i like the goal again to get the 597 there by the end of this year so obviously we're doing something right in the area of math when it comes to our sap scores and and seem to be on a steady improvement right there and that's that's where i like to see those those improvements on those types of tasks with the kids working on getting to college or whatever their choices are like the diploma and sat scores those are two of our big gateways to what comes next i appreciate that you the work that obviously our high school does but we all know that it starts with that kindergarten class and we are so fortunate um how well our buildings prepare our kids for each the next level and not not to discount the verbal uh we've increased so just uh i caught that as well but we've seen steady increases in both but i think it's a testament to what we put in you know all the way through i've got a question i guess i know with standardized testing as you said we didn't have a lot of it last year because of the challenges we're not sure this year what's going to happen unless something's happened in the last week and i'm not aware um i don't expect it to go to for to not have tests this year right so how do we how are we going to measure ourselves i know we have sats which are wonderful but what other ways have we found trying to think outside the box and get creative to measure the impact we're having can you give us some more examples of how we we've worked through this to yes absolutely so the probably the most important piece of data we have for the k through the first grade through um eighth grade is our nwea and actually we started that with kindergartners too it just looks a little different but that score is correlated starting in third grade to our standardized assessment in indiana so we can get a projection of how we think kids will do on that test but because the scores are in a continuum you can start to see where kids are at because it puts everything in quartiles so we can see if kids where they're at on the box and whiskers chart we use that not only to find out who needs enrichment but also who needs remediation or who's on the bubble we get to compare ourselves not only nationally but also against our own students because we typically are our average line falls above the national average so that's a great piece of data and we have been using nwea i think this is the sixth year um that we've we've been able to do that with our formative assessment grant money and you made the comment too about the plc's working together absolutely can you give us just a few more examples of that of how they're able to i mean they don't have to be across the school which is a couple of examples of sure so um for example in a 7th grade math class our teachers have selected from all of the long lists of standards there are some that are more important than others usually because they have endurance they're necessary not only to learn now but if you don't get it now um the next thing you're not going to get either so they've picked these standards based on on a few different categories and those are called essential learnings and those are the top priority things kids need to learn in each grade level that's the only thing but they're the top priorities and we need kids to reach high levels of learning to be proficient in all of those and that's always our goal everything on top of that's great but but that's our kind of our our basement what we want kids to reach um our plc's in each grade level are tracking those and how kids are doing in each one of those essential learnings and those things we keep going back to they spill that curriculum so they're catching those kids that aren't there all year long it's not like we did that and we moved on and we're done teaching that now those they teach continually because it also helps the kids that got it at that point not forget it so thank you you're welcome i bet jeff dr henderson will probably tell you all with your high school but but especially in math needs to be there for the elementary for the basics before you can move to that next level before they get into school yes and our elementary teachers um actually k through eight have gotten really good at at um managing their curriculum that way and they're really doing it together and you know we're all better together right and and the plc process is really improved and made us more effective does anyone else have any questions or comments from mrs hoover hearing no additional questions or comments can i hear a motion mr president i move that we approve the 20 20 20 21 school improvement plan for all the schools that's presented do i hear a second i'll second thank you mr alexander mr russell all those in favor of approving the 20-20-21 school improvement plan as presented please signify by saying aye aye mr harbor aye all those opposed the eyes have it five zero thank you mr stewart thank you i just want to share i'm presenting the cumulative work of not only our principals but their leadership teams um and so i want to thank them for all their hard work because not only do they do this they make this a priority all year and so i want to thank all of them because this is their their job and i'm assuming what we submit the 31 page document not just the summary that's here yes yes they have to go into uh and submit theirs into their school yep yep yes next on the agenda is dr paul gabriel the cfo who's going to speak about the resolution for financing of the sugar growth elementary building project thank you this is uh the third time we've taken formal action on this this particular project and probably other times we've talked about it so there's nothing really new here none of the details about the financing have changed any i just wanted to highlight what the schedule is for this as this project proceeds we had our first 1028 hearing on june 18th our second one on july 23rd this evening the board's approving a financing resolution and then in november we will have an additional appropriation hearing and that will be the end of the formal approval processes we expect to have the money available in december um then the board will actually approve the bids for this work hopefully sometime in the spring of 2021 and dr long anticipates that this would be completed by the summer of 2023 so that's a quick review of where we've been and where we're going and as i said there's no other new information so i would uh ask the board this evening to approve the resolution that's been presented to them thank you dr gabriel do i hear any questions or comments with respect to the proposed sugar financing for the sugar rave elementary building project here are no questions or comments i'm sorry did you have okay hearing no questions or comments do i hear a motion i know that we adopt a resolution approving the form of the lease of the center grove multi-facility building corporation second thank you mr alexander mrs toomey all those in favor please signify by saying hi [Music] thank you dr gabriel now we move to a motion to consider the approval of a resolution regarding the possible sale of the sugar growth property and again this is something that has been in front of the board in uh in past years dr gabriel let me back you up i apologize this is an advertisement i'm sorry you're right so i i apologize thank you mr alexander yep sorry this evening's board meeting has been appropriately advertised as a public hearing for the possible sale of the sugar grove property and just so everyone knows it's not the sugar grove school itself it's the property just south of the school yeah so this evening is the hearing for the possible sale of sugar property and i'll turn over the cleaning to mr daniels to run we're talking about the sale of potentially 37 acres of land adjacent to sugar dave elementary that we've determined is no longer useful for school purposes i now open this public hearing and turn it over to dr gabriel to provide some more information about the potential sales of the property okay so we went through the same process and in 2017 and 18 and we're talking about previously we held an auction for this property as mr daniel said 37 acres just south of the sugar grove building the highest bid at the time was one million two hundred thousand dollars the sale uh however never was closed because of problems obtaining the sewer permits so we are going to do the same thing again we've had contact from the vendors that bid at that time saying that they believe the sewer situation has been resolved to the point where uh they would like to to buy the property and obtaining the sewers is not our problem at all it's theirs so that's between them and the various agencies but this is the uh the schedule that we're following as we go through this again uh in on september 11th we put a notice in the paper about this this evening is a board hearing which declares the board's intent to sell this property then tomorrow we will put a notice in the paper of advertising the auction and a week later a second notice advertising the auction then we will have the auction will receive seal bids on the 14th of of october and and bidders will have opportunities and we control that process to up their bids if they so choose and our intention is then the the auction time period closes on the 16th of october and and hopefully at that point we will pick the highest bidder if we can get the purchase agreement prepared and approved we would bring it to the board in october which would be ideal if it takes more time to work through that then it would be brought to the board in november so that's the process that we're going through uh in in brief and uh at this point i turn it back over to mr daniels to conclude the hearing thank you dr gabriel this is the appropriate time if any member of the public would like to comment on the possible sale of a portion of the sugar grove property or the information presented this evening in this public hearing are the members of the public who would like to who are present who would like to comment mr poor can you please come up the microphone so we can hear you i believe we have three minutes correct this report will give you three minutes and thank you for being here tonight thank you just to go back a few years we were going to build another grade school at this property just like the same style and thing it was just another grade school so i guess i don't know what the board has been thinking because we got to build a new grade school in the northern part of our township so what's the thinking of the board are we going to go buy more land to build a new school you know i don't know but i think since we've already got a piece of property here that is paid for and we can build on that selling it because that's to me looks like a ideal situation to put another school right there to help us out that's about all i have to say i don't know what you guys have been talking about as far as looking ahead where you're going to build this new school but uh if you have to buy property now we got it already there and stuff so i don't know where where we're gonna build it thank you thank you is there anyone else from the public who would like to comment on the public hearing about the proposed sale of a portion of the sugar growth property hearing no other public comment i close this public hearing are there any members of the board who would like to comment or have any questions for dr gabriel relating to uh the potential sales property i guess they have two comments so mr core i'll answer your your question and i may not get them in the same order while i think all of us up here agree and part of our planning process is in the elementary school it's not on the north side of the district it's it's truly going to have to be to the south because that's where all the building is occurring the second piece of that is we've had a lot of conversation about traffic congestion and those types of things and dropping another elementary school in that same space i think dr long would attest and i think the sheriff's department would attest is going to create a logistical traffic problem in that area because there's really not a whole lot of room to improve the infrastructure there back to the sewer issue and and i want to make sure everybody's clear it was it was not a school problem it was a city of greenwood problem because they had run out of their capacity to allow any additional permits to be issued until they upgraded the sewer system and that problem on the north end of our district has been resolved now so this which is why we can now come up with a resolution to sell the property so just a couple of insights there that maybe everybody forgot about from a couple years ago and i think it's not very well stated and i'll add a little bit on top of that too that data is coming back showing us that yet growth in the next school needs to be south and we're hoping to use this property that once was thought a good location for another elementary school and now the new thinking organic administration is it would be better to locate one further south and two not in a heavy congested area like right next to two schools when they both have events nobody can find parking we run into that with three schools next to each other here with center grove elementary center grove middle and centerville high if they all have an event the same night good luck you got to get there early so the new thinking is to spread them out more a lot more people drop their kids off in the morning so we have to pack cars in all the elementary schools to try to accommodate for that so yes we are thinking ahead yes we're hoping to use this money for those type issues and instead of having a piece of property sit there that is in essence just not generating income and if we could ultimately use that money for something else for the school we think being good stewards we need to consider that but i do appreciate your questions and i agree with you 100 the old plan was to have two next to each other and that's been reconsidered so the new elementary needs to be somewhere else if i could just kind of fill in on that too if you look at vision 10 000 you'll see that sugar grow was never a flipped concept that was maple grove so i think you're getting a little confused on that sugar growth sugar never had an expansion on that sugar problem only maple grove did sugar grow has been pretty much contained by smith valley road and peterborough it's really hard to get any kind of traffic around in and then when we have the demographic study and the growth study all of the growth is down south as you pointed out and we are looking at property down that way um and just no matter where we would build the building and open it it is going to create the ever dreaded redistricting situation um so that will happen as well but dr long will will uh he promised that he's not going to let that happen right in his tenure his remaining tenure so thanks for clarifying i misunderstood too mr ford i thought yeah no it was set for yeah yeah you can see that on the vision 10 000 website um so if you dig down in there stacy's done a really good job of kind of laying that out and how we put that together any other comments uh relating to the potential sale of the sugarville property mr daniels excuse me one thing i meant to mention i didn't and that is uh i did say when we did this the last time the winning bid was a million two and in the documents that we'll provide to any potential bidders we're allowed to specify minimum bid our intent and those documents specified that the minimum bid is a million two so won't be any worse off than we were a year and a half ago hopefully we'll be better off if there's more competition we'll just have to wait and see dr gabriel you took my last question oh okay i meant to say that and forgot well you know i think that's a good point because we're not desperate to sell this land we're going to sell this land for what it's worth in order to use it for other school needs right and if it doesn't garner that now we'll hold on to it we'll sell it in a few years for what it's worth then yeah i appreciate you pointing out the the minimum bid of 1.2 million yeah any other comments or questions mr hubbard i know you're remote so i'll ask you if you have comments or questions no i don't have any comments i'm not just thanks mr ford for getting up there asking those questions i'm glad scott was able to answer them do i hear a motion mr president i move that we approve the resolution regarding the possible sale of the trigger growth property do i hear a second i'll segment this one hearing uh thank you mr alexander and thank myself too he's hearing a motion and a second on the sale of the access property of sugar grove all those in favor please signify by saying i all those mr hubbard all those opposed you guys have it 5-0 thank you i didn't mean to break protocol but that's when i think if we can generate money to use elsewhere let's do it okay yes our next item is the budget this evening is the hearing for the 2021 budget and i'll turn it over to mr daniels to run the hearing thank you dr arkanov this evening's board meeting has been appropriately advertised as a hearing on the 2021 budget the bus replacement plan and the capital projects fund i now open this public hearing and turn it over to dr gabriel thank you i think this is the 14th time i've gotten up in front of this board to make a presentation never with a mask on so we'll see i can get through it without too much stumbling this is a public hearing on the budget this shows you the overall schedule for the budget um we advertise it no longer in the paper but on the gateway state website and it also it also shows our the our own website where uh the full budget presentation about about a hundred pages is is available for the public to view right now this evening is a is a budget hearing and then at our next regular scheduled board meeting on october 27th we will be adopting the budget and the two replacement plans this is kind of an agenda of the topics to be discussed this evening i'm going to go very quickly i think the intention here is to not take a lot of time but to let the public know that it's available for them to look at in more detail first thing i want to talk about is the impact of code 19 on our finances and this slide summarizes the expenses that we have incurred to date with respect to covid it has continued to grow and this is not the end of this list this is a a summary of what we have turned in to fema and that situation is a little bit fluid right now we will probably turn in more later we have until the end of the year to complete that process and we really don't have any um idea when we'll get paid or how much they've said that 75 percent is the maximum they would pay us back but we don't know what will be approved for payment and what won't and that has changed over the past few weeks so it's kind of a fluid situation the second item is a little bit about enrollment this does it shows you a summary of where we are right now uh our enrollment uh when we on 8 31 when we closed the budget for all the changes was 8 856 an increase of 106 over last year it um has fluctuated by a student or two since then but but that's about where we will land we think so just in general the official enrollment date is september the 18th our preliminary enrollment is 88.56 but that certainly will change a little bit before the final numbers are produced we have until sometime in october to get any any errors resolved so it's not final yet the the enrollment that was the basis of our advertised budget was 88.65 because that's where we were on the first of september and so we're a little bit short because we're not going to get we're probably not going to get back up to that and for every student we miss that goal by we lose seven hundred dollars and that ends up being some out of cash balance um then the the next issue i wanna talk about is the capital projects fund that's part of this hearing this evening and there's a capital asset plan available on our website that lists projects that are assets to be purchased over ten thousand dollars since 2010 we've supplemented the cpf revenue with go bonds and we intend to do the same thing again for next year's budget this year for next year the bonds will total 5.17 million dollars these bonds support maintenance projects and technology projects and we have financed them over two years so that every year of one bond falls off and gets replaced with a new bond i'm not going to go into the details but this is the list of maintenance projects and it shows you what is in what used to be the cpf now the operations fund and what's in the bonds for the maintenance department and then the next slide is the same thing for the technology department i'm sure if you had any questions dr long and mr taylor could answer those for you about the specifics we also have a bus replacement plan that is the being considered this evening in this hearing for 2021 we intend to replace 10 buses at a total cost of about a million dollars we're replacing uh most of those are large 78 passenger buses that cost more than 100 000 and we're also replacing a couple of the activity buses that cost less than that so that's where you get to the total of a million dollars normally i go through a list of some of the major changes in the education fund and the operations fund to just talk about big things that impact the budget over the you know the really big items and i want to mention a few things here first of all we have take we have taken 450 000 in our revenue for next year and assigned it to the emergency account in the operations fund we've done this because we anticipate uh some significant expenses next year for kobit just like we've had this year don't know what that'll be but we anticipate a couple of years here in which money is going to be very tight and this sets that money aside in case we need it we've added new positions in the budget for next year one administrator that's the director of mental health and school counseling uh 13.5 teachers in the bargaining unit and that includes nine and a half classroom teachers three social workers and one seo specialist we've added six support staff two that's that's two bus drivers a bus monitor and then six times halftime custodians which we put in the elementary schools to assist in the cleaning process in the elementary schools and we've also put into the budget one police officer that's not a new position but it was originally paid from the grant and so to keep that police officer where we're going to be paying them out of the out of the operations fund next year for health insurance we've done we've uh in increased our expenses in that area 8.1 percent on the corporation side of the of paying for premiums and for employees it will be 1.4 percent of their premium so that's a fairly small amount for employees we've had to increase various maintenance accounts by totals 200 000 as we look at next year's budget because they've had some um some significant increases and expenses and we've been very very tight for the last couple years on their budgets and we had to increase utility accounts by 125 thousand dollars and that's about 4.4 percent of the utility account so those are some of the big changes that we made i i typically prepare um a comparison like this that compare that that looks at the the revenue versus the expense and for the education fund and the operations fund those are balanced budget budgets revenues equal expenses for the debt service fund they're slightly different because the state provides a formula for cash balance and based on that formula we need to decrease and spend a little cash balance next year that every year there's a slight adjustment because of the way that formula works in terms of the impact and the tax rate for the of this budget our current tax rate is a dollar 067 it's going to be a dollar 0264 at least that's our estimate that's up 1.93 cents uh and um we we always when we advertise our budgets and prepare the official forms we always estimate high because in case we've made any mistakes uh historically we are very very close to that advertised to the um the expected rate but we always cover ourselves a little bit by advertising a higher rate in in terms of that overall tax rate which is which we anticipate will be uh just under a dollar three for next year you can see we've we have since 2009 maintained a very level tax rate uh our our goal has always been to keep it less than that dollar four that it was in 2009 and we've been able to meet that goal i'm sure we will be able to do that for 2021 and just to do a comparison this shows the the different school districts in johnson county and where we are and this chart hasn't changed much i like to say if you stood away from it and just kind of got the overall picture and ignore the numbers the shape hasn't changed you can't you have clark pleasant franklin at the top and kind of leading and and then center grove and edinburgh kind of in the middle and then two others that are a little smaller that overall structure of those hasn't changed much in terms of the impact of this of this uh of budget on the on a taxpayer we have in the past use a home uh valued at three hundred thousand dollars just as a point of comparison and for that homeowner uh this you could see the calculations but the bottom line is that they would end up in school taxes paying fifteen dollars more next year than they paid this year and again this chart it's important to understand that's just school taxes that's not the total tax rate which obviously we don't control the other parts of the tax rate in terms of cash balance that's something we talk about and i know it's important to the board right now in 2019 we pretty much had to change the way we do the computation because they the state restructure the funds uh so in we had a seven about a seven percent tax rate i went on i'm sorry tetris had about seven point six percent um cash balance that's equivalent to five million dollars and it's so difficult right now to predict what it will be at the end of this year with all the covet expenses in there not knowing if we're going to get any fema money this year or not just a lot of unique variables about this year but but this shows to the impact if we have the same five million dollars at the end of 2020 that we had at the end of 2019 that uh percentage would be 7.2 percent so that's where we are for now so in summary uh this is kind of goes back over the key points education and operations fund are balanced budgets current enrollment is uh 88 56 up 106 students from last year and that's going to change a little bit but not much i we don't think when we get our final accounts our estimated tax rate for next year is a dollar 026 and that's up one point nine three cents from from this year and on a three hundred thousand dollar home annual uh impact would be an increase of fifteen dollars annually these are the uh this is just some information that the web address at the top shows you where you can look at the the higher budget that's available to people right now to look at if they want more information so this is a public hearing i'll turn it back to mr daniels to conclude the hearing thank you dr gabriel as part of the public hearing this is an appropriate time for members of the public to comment on the budget that's proposed or information presented if there are members of the public who'd like to speak please raise your hand mr ford i'll turn the microphone over here thank you dr movement uh mr parking way to get the microphone that would make sure we get your comment thank you where will we be in the balancing of the budget if the state only gives us 85 percent for the for the partial or for the virtual virtual kids compared to we get 100 what you know if we get 5 000 or six thousand dollars for child regulate if we attend class and then we're only going to get 85 percent of that if we if he's home doing computer and the only the other second thing is the on the bonds the g.o bonds i believe we were going to finance this new uh emergency ambulance station thing algo bonds right can that be done i can respond okay thank you thank you for your questions mr poor they're very good questions and i know dr gabriel hasn't answered well the first one about what happens if we get only 85 for virtual students i would describe that as a political football right now it's in the it's in the hands of the politicians in indianapolis we've been assured that it isn't going to happen that way that they're that it that we're going to get 100 percent for for our particular situation the way they're talking right now we're going to get 100 so that's not a terribly big concern um i don't think it's written in stone yet but that's the direction everybody's saying they're going to go i did do the math i'm not going to quote a number off top my head i'll be happy to get it to you because i don't remember what it was but it it is a significant chunk i think uh i think as we looked at this early on we said you know if that happens it will probably be a one-year hit and we'll take that out of cash balance so for one year so i think if that were to happen uh it's not like we'd have to go back in and say okay how can we find a way to eliminate something or modify the budget i think we'd like to continue to have the budget look just the way it is and all that would be impacted would be that cash balance chart so and the other question was about the bond oh yes but i i know that that's we've said that before and i think you've asked that question before and the answer to your question is that involves more long-term planning but that we've been doing but yes we can finance that project and yes we can do it without increasing the tax rate however we're still in a process where we are planning for that project going through the design and we're not in a position to sell the bonds at this time so in 2021 and that's what this budget is for calendar year we will not be paying back any of those bonds so that's why you don't see it it's part of this budget but it is part of our long-term plan and and uh barring any crazy thing in the financial markets we if things continue as they are we shouldn't have any difficulty financing those bonds without increasing the tax rate so that's the answer to that thank you dr gabriel are there any other members of public who'd like to comment seeing no further comment from the public i hereby close the uh public comment section section of the hearing now i ask is there anyone on the board who has any questions or comments with respect to the proposed budget i i had one dr gabriel and it was you know i'm sorry the number didn't jump out at me call he was sitting here i know normally we and i think i know the answer to this question but normally we use six thousand dollars just to round number what we're talking about how much we get for students i know this said 5700 yeah i'm assuming well i'll let you answer my question before i call it wrong or something yeah unfortunately both answers are right is it 6 000 yes it is 6 000 is an all-inclusive number it includes things like honors grant and extra money for special ed and extra money for cte doesn't include title okay it's everything that's in these two funds okay uh but when we talk about the differential if we're going to be off by 10 students one way or the other that's probably not going to impact the number of honors kids and the number of special those 10 kids aren't going to unless we happen to hit one of those so i i try to use the number when we talk about the differential that might be impacted by missing an enrollment target like that uh do i just use i exclude those other things i i assume that was the answer but i didn't want to make that so is it fair to say another way to look at it is you use the conservative more conservative number the 5700 yeah is that the actual number we get from the state well we don't like taking out all the other factors we uh that's probably hard to compete i'd have to look exactly at what was left it's very close to the exact number there's a printout that we get that shows the exact number and it's very close to that okay yeah i haven't seen it yeah okay thank you any other comments or questions on the budget hearing i got one comment letter four great question on the 85 by the way we we i know dr arkanov and mr taylor and i think dr long and several members of his cabinet were on the phone with a couple of the state legislators when that all hit the news and there was several assurances given i think during that call that that wasn't going to be the case but it's not kings and stone yet so until the session starts and the session's over your your perception is very fun and accurate the state board did take some action to change the definition which will help you change the definition of what a virtual student is for public schools like us so that should take care of getting the full 100 percent for those students which we have roughly 1200 of them yeah so now instead of there being a gap with the new language you would take the legislature arguably to pass a new law in a political climate where it would be very not favorable to take money away from schools who are battling everything or battling that's not legal advice that's just an observation on that note any other board comments or questions for dr gabriel on anything relating to the budget and there's no action required tonight so i'm not going to ask for a motion but i do thank you dr gabriel and mr paul and others for uh contributing this and your team that goes into helping all of us too so thank you i'm sorry mr hubbard did you have a comment i didn't ask i haven't closed it yet no i don't have any comments right now thanks for the input the board will will consider and consider the budget at its next meeting on october 22nd 2020.

those are adjustments they're making in response to the um nationwide use of google me for education which wasn't necessarily something that when google meet was first created that you know was envisioned as a national education platform but but you know we are seeing improvements um in terms of the functionality of google me both from the side of google and also in the local level um we are we've been experimenting with different configurations of laptops and other technology pieces for the google meets that's been going through our tech support which is in each building and looking at ways that we can help to enhance the quality of the laptops and other technology items that are specifically for our full remote teachers so we anticipate very soon we'll be able to provide our full remote teachers with even more technology in that sense than even a regular in-person classroom teacher so to address some of the um the needs of that full remote teacher which they because they depend entirely on technology to provide the instruction um fortunately for some of our class sizes for remote we have seen overall while we've had some students um move in in both you know remote to in person or in person to remote is that we are seeing a slight dip in the size of those full remote classes as we you know the in-person um experience so far is is working in our district um so as that continues that could also lead to increases in in for example the formal class that your children are in another technique that teachers are finding and that our curriculum office has been working with teachers on is using small group approach to kind of break a larger class size up into smaller groups and working within the since a four remote class does have a bit more freedom in terms of the way its school day is structured it's not tied necessarily to you know a bell or full full school wide minute by minute structure and so we're seeing some developments in that area as well so i definitely um you know thank you for your patience and please continue to provide feedback to us as we move forward but just so you know we're definitely um those are two huge areas that we're continuing to work on and we'll continue to work on so thank you uh this is um you know this first session is for anything that's uh on the agenda we will have a second portion uh to speak of any item of interest uh that will happen uh near the end after new and old business so just just for callers just to know but i do appreciate your question caller thank you for calling in okay we're going to be closing that portion of the meeting again there is a second public comment coming later on next we're going to item six which is approval of the minutes i need a motion to prove items six one through six three do i have a motion motion by miss everhart seconded by miss ryan any questions or comments uh for the approval of the minutes seeing none let's go to a roll call please this is barbara giovanni yes this is everhart yes mr fritz zaccaro yes miss fleming yes mr catherine yes mrs noll i'm going to abstain to 6.1 because i was not at the meeting and uh yes to 6.2 mr lancelata yes mr megan yes mrs ryan yes mission carries okay thank you mr rashenti at this point now we're moving to item seven which is the superintendent's report and administrative items i need a motion to approve items seven one through seven six motion by miss null second by mr lanzalotta before we go into questions and comments i'm going to give the floor to dr smith for his superintendent's report thank you mr fizzakero so this is our first board meeting after we've restarted school so i just want to point out today marks day number 13 during a pandemic and that alone is something i just want to point out and and also as a kind of um celebration because honestly it represents a tremendous amount of work by all of our staff of those 13 we've had two remote learning wednesdays so that means 11 of them have been both in person and and remote we've got combinations of in-person and and remote we've got full remote there's a lot going on across all of our schools and again um it's the success of it so far is due to the effort and intelligence and the care of all of our staff and all of our roles and i just want to acknowledge that um here tonight the um i thought it's really important to have different voices um at the table so i wanted to dedicate a few of my comments to just sharing a parent voice i got it among the emails that i received this one really stood out to me as sort of encapsulating a lot of the different facets of what the first days have been so i'm just going to read for a moment this is from a parent i just wanted to take a moment to thank you for all the hard work and energy that the etsd team has put into the reopening and virtual program for eve sham i have children in two schools and i've been amazed at all the hard work the teachers have put into their classes amidst everything going on however i am not surprised we moved here specifically for the school district and every teacher aid therapist receptionist nurse police officer and so on has always been at the top of their game and a pleasure to work with and interact with and quote that one really struck me because that's why we moved to eve sham too so it just and as a family it really uh resonated with me and um i love how in addition to highlighting the work of the teachers the parent also mentions all the other roles because that is so valuable and important um and and speaking of other rules one one thing i wanted to point out because i'm going to include a little bit of budgetary news each time right so you know i think everyone saw one of my friday emails recently when i emailed out about this statement that was since our last board meeting the statement that i submitted to our new jersey senate budget committee kind of had a graph in it indicating the the decrease in state funding and the increase in local tax levy that we're going to be experiencing we are experiencing going to be experiencing um and the budgetary uh challenges ahead for us um so what it's going to mean and it's going to we're going to get there and we're going to get there successfully and it's going to be a journey of many steps and i just wanted to point out each of those steps represents people you know individuals and so just one little story from this week so we have a retirement at rice and in the media specialist position and there is a media specialist at mms who is going to be going to um rice and we also have a clerk typist at dms who's going to be going to mms both this transfers and i just you know um the media specialist from mms is going to rice is that when the conversation about that transfer took place that the way that she ended the conversation was asking when she could reach out and speak to the principal about getting the chance to go over there and learn and meet with the media specialist who's currently there and that just moved me deeply because um in the course of that conversation by the end she was thinking of how to be successful in that new role it's absolutely a team before self mentality which is um just worth highlighting right now and also the clerk typists so they there were two part-time clerk there are two part-time clerk typists at dms and they talked out with each other which of the two would go to mms um to be the clerk typist there and uh again that is team before self um and so each of you know it just speaks to like on a board agenda you see names and you see numbers and you see different things but like every one of those steps represents conversations and service and duty um to help our students ultimately um so that's one thing i wanted to point out as well in my comments um and then i'll save a few comments for um when we get to the retirements if that's all right so thank you very much mr president thank you dr smith is there anybody who has any questions or comments regarding the superintendent's report or any administrative item all right seeing none let's go to a roll call please this is barbara giovanni yes mrs everhart yes mr fizzy carrick yes miss fleming yes mr camp yes mrs noll yes mr lancelata yes mr megan yes mrs ryan yes motion carries thank you we're going to move now to item eight which is curriculum and instruction which i need a motion to approve items 8.1 through 8.6 do i have a motion motion by miss ryan seconded by miss barbara giovanni any questions or comments pertaining curriculum and instruction ms barbara giovanni sorry the um digital divide uh grant accept fund in the amount of 184 182 we approved that last month but we had to do it for the acceptance and i want to thank mrs mcgulick for applying for it because it's going to be bringing chromebooks in to our first graders and to some kindergarten so i really appreciate it and job well done thank you ms barbara giovanni any other questions or comments seeing none let's go to a roll call please this is barbara giovanni yes mrs everhart yes mr fizzy cairo yes miss fleming yes mr katherine yes mrs noll yes mr lancelata yes mr megan yes mrs ryan yes motion carries all right thank you let's go now to item nine uh which is finance and operations i need a motion to approve items 9.1 through 9.12 do i have a motion motion by mr lanzalata second second by ms barbara giovanni seconded by ms barbara giovanni are there any questions or comments pertaining to finance or operations mr lanzalata for section 9.3 the payment of bills i apologize for my ignorance i'm not on the on the finance committee uh what is warrant uh two payments were made uh june of 2020 in september of 2020 totaling close to four million three hundred dollars i just was curious as to what warrant those account and all right uh miss uh i'm sorry uh miss everhart you had your hand your hand up a little earlier so i just want to make a special statement to those generous individuals in 9.5 who again during this unprecedented times where everyone is struggling and i am most appreciative of that but they have taken the opportunity to take initiatives to supply items to the eastern township school district so thank you so very much i'm not sure if i can say their names but i i see the list of donations there and i just want to do a shout out to those individuals who felt the need or the desire or the willingness to want to pay it forward to the school district so thank you very much for that just felt needed to acknowledge that thank you thank you ms everhart i i 100 agree with that i think that's an incredibly noble act and something that will go into great use uh miss knowles you're you're still up and then this barbecue i can't say the same thing as miss everhart so yes i second that it was very very nice to see that uh the community pulling together and donating so thank you everybody yes ms barbara giovanni and i just wanted to say the same thing to thank the generous generosity of the people in our town thank you there's a lot of thanks for you for for doing all of that thank you uh anybody else questions or comments for finance and operations let's move to a roll call please mrs barbara giovanni yes mrs everhart yes mr fizzy cara yes miss fleming yes mr canton yes mrs noll yes mr lancelata yes mr megan yes mrs ryan yes motion carries thank you now we're going to head over to item 10 which is personnel i need a motion to approve items 10.1 through 10.10 do i have a motion motion by miss everhart second it by miss knoll any questions i know there are definitely comments for this one any questions or comments for personnel miss everhart okay so i just want to make a couple comments here i want to go to resignation so while i think it's wonderful that the list of individuals are choosing this opportunity to move on to other adventures thank you for your time and service to the to the district but i just want to do a shout out to if i may to two individuals that i have worked with and have some experience with in my course of time on the school board so good luck to uh betty dovis i as well as with other board members back pre covet days had the opportunity to come in and experience uh exciting adventures in uh mrs dovis's class uh she was really great and i know elaine uh can help me here on that uh she just did some really creative things with the children here at demacy and i do remember her i think if i remember correctly she was knitting i used that crocheting plastic bags together for homeless individuals in and around the uh local communities found that to be just very clever and creative and the children the enthusiasm of all the stuff that she presented to the children to do as a service opportunity and the children were so engaged it was a really remarkable experience as a board member to experience that so good luck to you uh and thank you for your service i also want to say a shout out to donna galley who uh is as a rice a former rice parent uh i've known mrs galley there she's been at rice for a long time so i want to wish her a lot of luck uh same to mrs kilroy i think i mentioned her at the last board meeting and it gives me great pause but i want to say shout out to mrs arenau who i know is moving on in 2021 to her second chapter or maybe third not sure but a life outside of yves sham school district and i want to say thank you for the time and effort and dedication that you have given to the district both at bieler and most currently at rice you know it's going to be a great loss but i'm excited for you but again just thank you for everything that you've done for our school as a principal in both those school communities best of luck that's it thank you miss everhart uh ms barbara giovanni and i'm just going to agree with what mrs everhart said and to betty davis i thoroughly enjoyed coming on those community days to see not only you but all the teachers engaged and how excited the children were to be doing these projects that went to so many good causes and i really will miss seeing you mrs davis and also to dolores castellanos i know her from way back and as a special ed teacher in the district and to everyone else and to mrs arenau for all you've done for our district and i can tell you you're going to love retirement everybody who's doing it so good luck any other questions or comments um i i quickly will say one comment i i'm going to uh i want to share a little bit about uh my my congratulations to uh miss dovis as well she is one of i think the very last of my teachers that are still was in this district uh and i had the a privilege of being in her class uh when i was in eighth grade greenhouse uh in her in her reading class and she is one of the most intellectual human beings i've ever met she was tough but incredibly fair and i i credit half of my vocab literally to the year that i spent with her she's truly an amazing woman and i honestly i i was taken aback earlier this week when i saw it because i i expected uh betty to be here longer than than the building would be up because i expect her actually to have her car in the parking lot right now and to be in her classroom because that's that's always the way that that that betty operated i would i would come home from rehearsal and go for a run and i would cross through this building at like five six o'clock at night and betty's car would still be there in the parking lot last one left on the corner right near greenhouse and that just speaks volumes and that's not like a new thing that was that was her standard clock out time she was an absolutely true she is an absolutely tremendous person and a tremendous tremendous teacher um and so i just want to thank her personally for the education she bestowed upon me and i was even blessed enough to be able to stop in her room every once in a while later on after i graduated to still say hello and see her and even had the opportunity to get to know her kids who i graduated with and i know she has a lot of grandchildren to love and i know that she will she will not be bored so miss dovis i uh i congratulate you with with the rest of the board you are a a stellar person and uh i wish you all the best thank you so much uh dr smith did you yes thank you i'd like to um just say a few words about a few of our other retirees we have such a a group this this board meeting um just over a hundred years of experience um just in the teaching realm leaving us so um uh dolly castellanos i just wanted to uh say a few words this is from mr feldman so she was with us 2016 has been with us 26 years in him township and started at the macy elementary school where she was among the first group of teachers to implement the resource program so our inclusion and pull-out program and then she moved to behler where she was a reading recovery teacher and also taught in a self-contained ld classroom where she piloted moving with her whole class into a regular second grade classroom every day for core literature instruction and then finally she moved to marlton elementary where she worked with all grades from kindergarten to fifth grade so that's just i think in 26 years she managed to be in many schools many different types of roles and i again just speaks to her impact here in the district another staff member i wanted to mention was um uh donna galley who began in 1989 here in our district as a kindergarten teacher at evans and then she transferred to rice when it opened um so you know that's that's a all a long and very valuable service with us um among the words that miss erin shared about her was um she highlighted her good rapport with students and parents and how her colleague co-workers appreciated her sense of humor and patience and her gentle compassionate demeanor which are qualities that we hope you know again in the way that um culture is built um through people that that that same gentle nature and caringness will carry forward um and you know as a legacy in all of those who worked with her um and then lastly i'd like to just point out something about um miss erin now i i i'm glad that news out is out because i had to sit on that for a little bit um but but uh you know just in thinking as i thought about what i would say about miss aaron i i haven't known her very long but with some people you um you can tell a lot by little details and she notices all the details that matter and the story i wanted this the little anecdote i wanted to say about her was i was reading an article about ruth bader ginsburg and one of the law clerks who worked for justice ginsburg had turned in like legal briefs to her and kept getting them back with like a ton of comments and vowed she was going to eventually get like fewer and fewer comments and she kept working and she kept working and like little by little over the years she would get the briefs back with fewer and fewer comments from justice ginsburg and then the last one of the last briefs that she gave her she got back with just two words on it at the very top and the law clerk said just those two words were the most powerful feedback she'd ever gotten on anything she'd she'd written and the words were just right just right and when i think of this air now as a principal i think just right so thank you very much to to her for her service any more questions or comments to personnel let's go for a roll call please mrs barbara giovanni yes mrs everhart yes mr fizzakaro yes miss fleming yes mr captain yes mrs noll yes mr lanzalotta yes mr megan yes mrs ryan yes mission carries thank you at this point now we'll go to item 11 which is policy i need a motion to approve items 11.1 through 11.3 do i have a motion for policy motion by ms noel seconded by miss ryan uh do i have any questions or comments pertaining to policy seeing none let's go to a role called please mrs barbara giovanni yes mrs everhart yes mr fizzy carol yes miss fleming yes mr canton mrs noll yes mr lancelata yes mr megan yes mrs ryan yes motion carries thank you moving now into committee reports uh i need a um i do not need a motion for this uh moving into committee reports uh is there any uh committee chair that wishes to share their uh their report uh miss noll i'll share on our technology committee quarterly meeting that we had last week usually our technology group led by mr summers very busy over the summer but this year even more so um they worked hard on hard wiring a lot of the classrooms were needed for the internet um more stable internet connection and of course the thermal scanners installing those at every school and a huge chromebook inventory and loaner program that we rolled out this fall since many more families requested the use of chromebooks for remote learning and as dr smith discussed some upgraded laptops for some of the teachers so they could have a better platform you know using google meat on a better platform or device and i also want to mention the active panels that we were able to purchase not all of them are in yet but as they're coming in the team is installing them and ms mcgulick explained that it was through the generous donations from the ptas correct me and of course the education yves sham education foundation that we were able to also leverage a what was the sale mrs mcgulick buy two get one free so we were able to get more active panels this summer in the middle of this you know pandemic and economic downturn and lastly this first couple of weeks with the help desk mr summers team fielded over a thousand you said over a thousand work orders coming in from parents and i believe also teachers were in that category so they have been very busy i wanted to update the group and thank them as well for working so hard miss everhart thank you miss noah so i it hasn't happened yet but uh we're going to have our first pta pto meeting in person i think the first wednesday of the full week in october and that's going to look a little different than it's looked in the past because i imagine those school community leaders are going to come to the table with some creative ideas in a way to do fundraising or some other initiative to help their school community so i'm gonna i'm gonna be looking forward to that it's gonna be a meeting of the mind so to speak and that's gonna be a great way for us to share information from our arab doors to their doors and vice versa so um i'm sure there's going to be a lot of conversation that's going to be really helpful so i'm looking forward to that it's going to look a little different but i'm anxious to meet all the new uh school leaders from the ptas and pto's that's it thank you miss everhart mr lanzalata i just like to thank the marlton recreational council for welcoming myself and dr smith this month we you know it was it's our attempt to improve the community relations um and also introduce dr smith what we're doing in the school and just you know our overall open reopening plan they were very very receptive we appreciate you guys having us over there they also urge um you know all the parents uh just to let them know they let they want to let them know that you know despite some of the extracurricular activities being in the sports being cancelled for this year you know in our school district that the marlton recreation council is still having sports for the most part and that they urge you to please sign up thank you thank you mr lanzalata you got it any other committee reports all right seeing none we're going to move uh it says here old business is 13.1 but there is no old business it's just a typo uh moving into new business there is no new business right good all right um i'm gonna move past old business move past new business to item number 15 which is uh public comment for any item of interest this meeting will now be open to the public referencing any items of interest however if your questions or comments pertain to litigation student or personnel items or negotiations we would ask that you see the superintendent after the meeting since we do not discuss these matters in public please limit your comments to three minutes per person there will be a timer up on the screen for you to see how much time you have left also again if it's if you're asking questions please ask the question don't don't hang or linger uh just just uh you know hang up the phone turn up the volume and we will we'll be able to answer the question so you're able to hear it and lastly make sure that you as you call us to turn the volume off so that we can hear you also um me or oh okay all right all right and then uh finally and most importantly please state your name and address with that being said it seems like we're ready go ahead okay my name is john janks 39 carlson avenue my comments tonight are about the closure and virtual learning of course we know how how many people in burlington county under the age of 29 have died and that of course is zero and and from the cdc website we've got adolescents aged 10 to 17 may be more likely to become infected with cars sores covet too than uh children younger age but adolescents do not appear to be at a higher risk of developing severe illnesses yes i hope you heard that covid19 does not present a severe risk to children clear evidence from the fact that more children have died from flu than from covid19 now what does this have to do with opening the school quite a bit actually and we also have another document from the cdc and i quote the u.s educational system was not built to deal with extended shutdowns like those imposed by the coven 19 pandemic it teaches administrators have worked hard and i agree with that certainly but this is a quote to keep learning alive nevertheless these efforts are not likely to provide the quality of education that is delivered to the classroom most importantly learning loss is probably the greatest among low-income black and hispanic students that's the cdc's comments not mine cdc the students know it the parents know it the teachers know it everybody knows it remote learning is substandard who is hurt more it's the underprivileged the economically disadvantaged the minorities probably single parent children bottom line from these two inconvenient facts from the cdc covid does not impose a serious risk to children that's a fact i'm sorry with that people you know may not may not like it but it is affected low and hispanics will suffer disproportionate learning loss when you close the schools you are making a a a minority group of people uh suffer at the consequences uh and of course you know no one no one under the age and bro in burlington county uh we got a half a million people no one under the age of 29 has died uh and you know so by keeping the minority children out of school five days you perpetuate the disproportionate learning loss what does that mean that means that you are they effectively creating systemic racism in this state and who who is doing that my question is who is who is who is is promoting this kind of you know uh ridiculous you know policy well i guess like well you don't have to look too much farther than the njea they're lobbying and discouraging and encouraging virtual learning the department of education is establishing rules so you guys can't um you know yes can i please make a commentary please state your name and address first my name is erica seifer and i live at knightsbridge go ahead carla okay john richard schrock a professor of science education at an emporia state university frequently writes about education and this pandemic has provided an opportunity of a crisis of convenience it's given big ed tech a chance to regain their footing in the field of online education but i think that most students and teachers and um parents have been underwhelmed and really there is no substitute for in-person face-to-face learning i think everybody on the board intuitively knows that and feels that and i'm just imploring you as parents as grandparents to just fight for our children and to just push as much as you can to um you know following the science and the facts know what's right and and to open our schools back up because our kids need their education and an online education no matter what any big tech company will will try to convey it's no substitute for an in-person peer collaboration education that's all i have to say thank you caller since we had kind of taken thank uh both i thank both both callers i apologize again um we do have that three minute timer so if you do go over we you know in just the uh you know we try to be fair with that so i apologize if you felt cut off um so we are going to move past the public comment and head into at this point in time board announcements is there anybody here who has any board announcements miss ryan okay um partial to all the staff at dimacey middle but i have to commend all of them on the drop off and pick up procedures for the past two weeks they've gone smoothly and without incident so i applaud them standing in the cold in the early morning when it's not 100 light out so good job to miss romanelli and her staff i too agree with miss everhart i look forward to seeing what the pta and pto presidents come up with i know that some of them have already started their fundraising efforts so i'm curious and excited to see what their upcoming efforts look like in the future i know that an email went out about lunches and if you have any questions you can contact the business office with those specific questions instead of speculating over social media so you can get all the facts because it's a really great program and i think we're lucky that the the country implemented that so thank you thank you miss ryan miss everhart so i want to piggyback on the earlier statement i made about donations so i just want to do a shout out again to the public to the school communities because i did see the great support for picnic tables that's going on in the district i think there are some residents that are working school by school to set up picnic table donations to help the children during their lunch time to not sit on the ground and i know i think rice and beeler jagger also might be ending you know getting all their tables but i think they're working school by school and it's turning out that there's parents there's previous alumni there are um donations from people that maybe don't have kids in the school district that are just donating there's there's i think the wood stream swim club gave some picnic tables to vanzant so again it's just a great opportunity to shout out and thank the the eve sham community for coming together and rallying around the eve sham township school district to help them face these challenges in a positive way i mean nobody really wants to have those kids really sit out there right in the freezing cold and on a blanket on the ground so they've rallied together they're painting them they're delivering them we've got council people doing it we have previous board members and residents that are coming out of the woodwork so to speak to help these kids have a better uh more positive uh lunch time during this challenging time so thanks to the public for just rallying again for the children thank you miss ryan i know that dr smith sends out his friday communication with everyone and i just wanted to make sure that you're all taking a look at the community tab on our district website because that is where all the flyers are now located i know that he mentioned it in his email but instead of having to research back into your emails to look for the specific flyer that may have gone out it is now centrally located on the district website under community tab so i just want you all to take a minute to check that out as well so it's one stop shopping that's okay miss noll i just wanted to talk about the first couple weeks of school and how things are going in my household and i've already said this to dr smith during our and miss mcgoulek during our finance and technology i want to thank all of the teachers and staff on an amazing job that they're doing with the synchronous learning i'm a stay-at-home mom so i'm right there with my two elementary of aged children and it was a good plan on paper and i'm proud to have voted for it and i thank the other board members who voted for it but to see it actually implemented is amazing i don't know if anybody else has had that opportunity at home with your young children but it is absolutely amazing how the teachers are able to engage the children in the classroom at the same time as the children at home so amazing and i'm so happy that we did move forward with the synchronous learning plan i it keeps my children focused rather than choosing from choice boards which other districts may be doing we did that in the spring so much better the plan was great but it could not have worked if our teachers were not so amazing and also all of their supports in the classroom with the paraprofessionals and the aides so i want to share that with the other board members since i do have that first person knowledge of it having the two young boys at home so great great job to everybody in our schools my boys are in marlton elementary so of course shout out to them but i know the teachers and staff and all of our schools are equally amazing so thank you board members for supporting the plan miss fleming yes i just wanted to say and piggyback on what miss everhart said about very much thanking the community with huge applause for rising to the occasion in this middle of our pandemic i think it's wonderful thank you for all their time their effort certainly their extreme generosity thank you any other announcements i i will i will just say uh real quickly uh just a uh a simple note of thank you um you know our our job as the board of education is the easy part all right it is it is the easy part what you guys are doing every day is the hard part and i i want to thank you on behalf of my daughter who i know is getting a an incredible education from her second grade teacher um and thank you from all the parents that i've talked to um as socially distant as possible uh in the last in the last couple weeks who who always talk my ear off in in a positive way about about things that are going well or not going well in in the school district and they are always very honest with me and in their honesty they are um just they're so so grateful for you and and you know i think throughout all of this i i just hope that that is is felt there is a serious sense of gratitude by everybody that i meet and you know i it's funny i you know talk about technology and talk about all that stuff and my first my first two days in the classroom my google me crapped out and my my wi-fi network went haywire and there were there were things that just just frankly weren't working um and i i just you know i thought to myself i'm just i'm gonna do what i can do and and if i do that i'll and try to do it to the best of my ability then hopefully it will carry on and and it'll reflect upon the students that i have and i know that sentiment is is being felt along all of my colleagues because i do consider you colleagues in that in that sense and uh so just i just want to simply say thank you and recognize the difficulty of what you're doing and just how utterly important it is mentally emotionally and uh and physically i it just bottom of my heart thank you um with with that being said um we are going to go into a second executive session i'll need a motion to whereas in njsa 10 4-12 allows for a public body to go into closed session during a public meeting and whereas the board of education of eastham township has deemed it necessary to go into closed session to discuss certain matters which are exempted from the public and that's my that's ambitious um that's you know if there wasn't a pandemic right now i would be very confident that we could do it but i do know that the system is stressed right now but that's that's my my timeline that i'm working with i'm annette on so we're going to give it our best shot if that works out well for all of you um sure so certainly it does for me and you know i think if we if the board can bring to the next meeting although uh you know if they could have prepared to share some of those you know some of those times that nancy mentioned some of those you know potential questions or guiding principles um you know i think that we can we can reconvene and um you know discuss kind of a little bit of the more nuanced or discuss it with more granularity than we have today and david there is nothing wrong with taking the ideas that are included in any of these plans you know that's what they did to get make their plans you know and so if you really like how they've done this and you really like the statements you don't have to reword them or do anything just um be you know if you can just take some time to help us then we'll i'll get it a more personalized plan because we do know that chandler is different than asdb we know scottsdale is different but what i'm hearing is at the end we are going to have very clear matrixes that measure and report on a regular basis the products progress we're making on this plan right and that's i think that's you know good a good point there nancy i mean you know to me a lot of again i really like what texas has done both the texas school for the deaf and texas school for the blind i think are excellent plans um i think i think chandler's a really good plan and and similar to what you know kind of the the asb training is on on this subject but you know our job is really to to adapt this to the agency and kind of the special place the agency has in education educational service delivery in arizona um so not just not just the brick and mortar schools but working with so many school districts as we do on the ontario basis working with uh early learning you know this year to three and zero now i mean we think of it now zero to five but you know making sure that we um uh you know develop uh skills at that level um and at that age which is something that that other school districts don't so you know to me it's really adapting these um you know these principles to how how the agency delivers services throughout the state lastly i want to include that it won't end with just you and this executive team or the next tier of leadership in the first year or one of the strategies is going to be to have focus groups and to sit down with focus we won't have this done for the plan but in year one you sit down with focus groups with parents and say here's how we're really going to work on communication and building relationships you sit down with focus groups and then you get that data and so the matrixes will get improved because you don't have real robust data right now as you get more data you will have more information as you work through this plan so it isn't done you don't put it on the shelf you have to have somebody that keeps it alive and well and the way you do that as a board you expect a net to report on it at every board meeting and talk about progress that's been made i think your board reports will be more meaningful because they'll be around these four pillars it's important to hear what operations doing but it's more important to hear what operations is doing to support these pillars it's important to hear what hr is doing but as they are supporting that organizational culture so i believe you will see a better link with a lot of these reports as we go through the process and you'll have good documentation of your efforts right now i i agree nancy and um you know the i think before the january meeting is you know we've discussed in the public is you know once we have a draft you know we'll get comments too right to discuss later so we'll make sure that we you know we think about those too sure you can do that with this is a preliminary plan much like you do with policies there's many ways that you can do that but i think as you refine processes you have to talk to the people that teachers that are implementing this you have to talk with districts you you know and and they have to buy into being a part of what we're planning on doing so that they can help support that it ties in with what mike was saying the relationship has changed with districts now so how are we going to help you meet those post-secondary outcomes we know those parents you know we we may not do it reported but we can certainly be a partner in getting the data great um so it looks like that was uh our fifth point of the developing the matrix of the path forward i think we kind of segued into that um are there any more more discussions on on that point um it looks like we have our homework cut out for us and it looks like we have the idea of our path forward from here and so i will see all of you next thursday at four o'clock i want to thank aaron this gallery method was much easier for me it wasn't as optimal as being in person but i could see all of you i could see when you had your hands raised and or wanted to participate nobody fell asleep i appreciate that it's your um participatory and we'll hopefully get you by monday a template that you can start filling in the blanks and um annette and i will work on that tomorrow great um thank you so much for all your time uh this is this is you know this is a really important process you know we do this once every you know five years or so so i want to make you know i want to make sure everyone's involved and and thank you again for all your comments and all your input thank you guys great okay nice seeing everybody have a good day see you next week bye thank you vicky before you hang up did you

what would you do to try to attract and keep good teachers in our district we will now begin with candidate walker thank you i think stability in our leadership positions is huge right now we're going through a lot of change hiring a new superintendent so that will impact our teachers directly our principals that position seems to have a revolving door in our district except for a few schools um and so that makes it really hard i think when the leadership is there um then the teachers stay we need our community to also uplift and support these teachers they show up for our kids every day they end up spending more time with them during the day than we do as a parent and also there cannot be any teacher bashing whether it's on online or during governing board meetings um teachers do this for the kids it's obviously not for the pay and for them to lose their respect and lose that quality of life that they have to teach here um it's unacceptable our board needs to support the teachers and also allow for open communication so that we can be the voice for them and that we can hear their needs so that they and then can teach and support our children thank you thank you candidate wilson your response i believe if the district entertained more options in regards to the reopening of schools a healthy resolution could have been made for families and teachers for a safer campus environment for examples my kids currently go to a school where they're offered a hybrid solution for both teachers and students the administration was transparent at all times listened to the opinions of both faculty and parents regarding school safety and the hopes of expediting students back in the classroom through open communication the administration accommodated the needs of everyone involved the result was a victory the teachers and the students were all enthusiastic about being in school and back in class the integration and execution of on-campus learning was seamless and gave both teachers and families the assurance we were looking for it can be done as for teachers i already touched based on this subject in question two however i would like to add that our family had an unfortunate unfortunate situation happen last year with arson's preschool teacher the district attempted to force her out without due process after a 30-year career if there is a shortage shortage of teachers and we want to recruit more teachers why are we forcing the ones we already employ out as a board member i would make sure this never happens again i would hope that the faculty could reach out at any time to find support within the board members and myself thank you thank you ms geiselhofer representing candidate busby your response the teacher shortage in arizona is certainly real however i believe we have an inherent advantage here cave creek is a special town the people of cave creek young and old make it a desirable place to work learn and live we can best recruit and retain quality teachers by providing pay commensurate to the job and nurturing a working and learning environment that seeps with the same pride as we see in the rest of our community by listening to the voices of our students our parents our teachers and our staff members we can be responsive to their needs and create the culture that we're known for identifying ways to improve the teaching and learning environment is essential our greatest asset is our people and that includes all people utilizing shared stakeholders will support our students and all of us we see bumper stickers around town and t-shirts that boast mantras like cave creek strong and cave creek proud and creaker for life let our let's let our actions speak for themselves and create a teaching environment where candidates are lining up to be part of the special the specialness that we have here in cave creek i know we talk about it and we know our teachers are paid less than the surrounding districts but acknowledging the problem is not the same as solving the problem i believe including teacher compensation in the district's goals will demonstrate the district's commitment to recognizing and hiring competent highly qualified teachers and compensating them fairly thank you candidate fortney your response budgeting and fiscal responsibility are embedded in many of the questions here tonight and i've spent hours talking to people to better understand the funding situation here in ccusd i've talked to the superintendent i've talked to our state senator to get a clear picture of how things work here and the answer to this question does come down to funding getting every dollar that is earmarked for cave creek and using it to the best of our ability making sure our legislators are dedicated to funding public schools and making sure our residents are completely aware of the funding situation here in cave creek so that they are more receptive to making sure the district has what it takes to attract and retain teachers if we want to do this this has to be done by paying them better and that's both pay and affordable benefits giving them the resources that they need to be effective teachers and providing professional development so that to help them grow as teachers and again paying them so that they don't then leave back in 2012 i had to leave cc usd because various funds were cut year after year after year and my pay actually went down year after year after year and now good teachers that want to be here and are actively trying to get here can't because of the pay gap that is so significant between us and other districts so that has to change thank you candidate rich your response thank you teacher development the quality of our schools the desert foothills environment and our local community um it's this sense of belonging to this community the small district having won high school this is what attracted my family to this area it's the close-knit feel of the community these are all the attractions to teachers as far as retention that's a difficult question our teachers for one thing they need to be given the opportunity to be heard when decisions are being made on their behalf and as has been mentioned their pay is severely low it's below the state average it's a difficult thing for uh for our district to find funding for as i said really our biggest option is the mno override we're not going to get much funding from the state we're not going to get any help on the the issue of the of the two local taxes i mentioned earlier and i also just wanted to touch on something that was mentioned about a teacher leaving the district i don't know about the specific case that was referenced but i do know as we all know anytime there is a hr issue where an employee leaves an employer then those that are in and know for example in the district is going to be the superintendent the principal of the school the governing board we're forbidden from speaking about anything related to the matter specifically for the privacy of the employee involved thank you candidate thatcher your response thank you this question goes along with the previous two questions this is regarding budget cuts closures and salaries again we need to look at the who what where and how these things have happened in order to attract teachers we might need to build our own grow our own teachers model this can be done by scholarships utilizing businesses within our community to create and contribute to these scholarships the creation of pathways into profession develop teacher residencies all this has to be taken into account by the governing board superintendent administration that we have provided professional collaboration and shared decision making everyone has a voice everyone is to be heard we as a community must come together and ask questions lead by example and show what ccusd can and will do to be the best of the best thank you we will now move on to question number six what would you do to bring more money into the district and do you support the current invest in education act why or why not would you support override and bond elections why or why not and we will begin with candidate wilson bringing more money to the table is a priority i believe enrollment should be the target a demographer was hired and the results show well over a thousand students are not enrolled at ccusd by enhancing programs and offering a broader spectrum of after school programs i'm certain that students would be drawn to our district i do support invest for education and i absolutely want teachers to receive pay raises now more than ever i have a profound respect for educators i do however contemplate the impact the invest for ed act or should i say prop may have on the community will so will small businesses suffer will real estate values go down i am for any and all salary increases for our teachers i worry the domino effect will lead to bigger issues for the community also it is unclear who will be responsible for accurately distributing the funds clarify and tighten up the loose ends and invest for ed would be more widely accepted nonetheless we should never stop lobbying for our a uniformed pay scale for all districts i hope this is a concern that we resolve in the near future it doesn't matter whether or whether or not i support overrides or bonds the question is do the voters support the two efforts with a better public image for ccusd the bonds would get approved and if we had better fiscal responsibility we wouldn't need overrides thank you thank you um ms geiselhofer representing candidate busby your response thanks as a public school district we have only two sources of revenue state funding and overrides state funding is driven by the number of students enrolled and overrides are determined by our voters knowing that funding from the state correlates with the number of students enrolled working on ways to increase enrollment on each campus would be an opportunity to bring additional dollars in from the state build to the programs and the students will come and this goes back to the previous question about what should be cut nothing should be cut make this such an exciting place to be that has something for every student and values every learner they'll come and with them comes the funding another way to bring more money to the district includes fostering relationships with the business community to cultivate new opportunities this can bring resources to the classroom we must get creative with our current resources and how they can work in tandem with new approaches for example creating a dedicated grant writer position to explore and identify all possible avenues of resources for our classrooms and strategic district initiatives is another way to provide resources to our classrooms gaining resources through these means and others will only further promote achievement within the district and continue to keep ccusd among the top districts in the state thank you mr fortney your response yeah there's there's an awful lot in this question uh so if i go over a little bit please bear with me i think i could talk for 90 seconds on each one of these questions but this district has the highest property values in the state so because of that not only does not much money come from the state but we do pay that additional tax that immediately leaves our district to support the other districts that can't support themselves millions of dollars that we never see our current state senator has tried to pass a bill to get that to where we could actually be allowed to keep some of those funds but it's never been heard i'll advocate for this district to keep as much of our tax dollars as is possible as far as invest in ed yes i do support it the fact is that our legislature has not properly funded our our schools for over a decade this has to change now there's a lot of misinformation about invest in ed and there's way too much to talk about here but i would definitely uh tell you this it's popular it's statewide and it has a really good chance of passing so we as a board will have to be very proactive in how we respond to that and finally with our bonds and overrides if we want the teachers and the resources and the programs we have to get the community involved this includes people that don't vote or have usually voted no often because they are not invested in the district we need to promote ccusd and emphasize that doing more with less only goes so far if we want to have a powerful student body we have to be willing to do what it takes to get there thank you mr rich your response thank you this is the this is a big question and uh i feel like i might let down a lot of people with my answer on 208 i just want to say i understand why there's a lawsuit over over the issue i was confused by myself at first it sounded like it was just an increase in taxes of three percent wanting to find out that it doubles the income tax on those individuals that are taxed with it as much as i want to see our teachers get the pay they deserve i cannot be behind something that doubles someone's taxes to do so also the 200 000 a year that's not indexed to inflation and if this issue passes i'm worried about the future issues four years down the road is it going to be something that only taxes people that make over a hundred thousand and so on and so on i really wish that the legislature would have taken care of this issue out of budgeting if i had my wish and was able to affect change at the legislature i think that all teachers should be paid directly by the state they can be hired fired uh disciplined supervised by each school district but i think instead of paying them through each school district's budget it should be directly by the state thank you thank you ms thatcher your response thank you an investment in education is an investment of our teachers and students investing in education is not only the right thing to do it is smart economics investing in our future is what will grow our children as they grow and increase our gross domestic product these are the goods and services that will produce our future we must think where can the money go for the best outcome for our teachers and students we must analyze the current spending do we have outdated and inefficient operations we need to show that we do not have failures in our spending and are using funds as a smart investment and putting those funds into ventures that will be beneficial and excel the ccusd school district thank you ms walker your response um can i ask for clarity on what that mean you do would say yes for prop 208 i'm in for clarity on prop 208 yes for the invest in education act i am investing in our teachers and our students okay all right thank you i just find clarity on that um for the question did you guys want a yes or no if we're supporting that act can i get clarity on the question um just whether just why or why not okay what you prepared for okay thank you um as far as prop 208 and the invest in ed act i do support it um i am self-employed most of my close friends and family members all own small bit small businesses themselves and they will not be affected by this it is statewide so as far as how it will just affect our district or housing it will affect just anybody that makes over 250 000 as an individual and 500 000 um as a couple our sales tax is already the 11th highest in the nation and that has been popular let's just raise the sales tax we already have a very high sales tax our property taxes although they are 13th lowest in the nation we actually in cave creek we can't keep all of that like everybody has said so that funding is sent to other districts that are in need invest in ed will actually bring a lot of income into the school directly it does go directly towards teachers salaries pera's transportation all things that are important and hopefully with that extra funding we may not need bonds and overrides i do support them however and just because our state school facilities continues to not fund what they're supposed to um and our teachers haven't had a raise in over 20 years and although james like you said it does double the taxes of some individuals um right now even once they're doubled they probably don't pay the same amount as you and i combined as of right now so it sounds like a lot but doing the research and the numbers even that double is still far less than the average pace thank you thank you we will now move to question number seven what do you envision the 2020 to 2021 school year to look like as the cobin 19 continues what has gone well so far and what would you do differently if anything we will begin with ms geiselhoefer representing candidate busby what do i envision for the next eight months in full disclosure it's difficult to predict what's going to happen in the next eight days least of all the next eight weeks while i might not have all the answers for what the next eight months will bring i am confident that the 20 20 21 school year will look like a year filled with growth development and opportunity and while the details might not be clear the outcome is our students and our teachers our community will rise above it we will grow and we will learn we will try to bridge together the gap that widened from the learning loss from the previous spring the reality is that the covid pandemic has presented many challenges for our district but embedded within that crisis were many opportunities we've already identified alternative ways to deliver instruction it's crucial we continue to build upon the ingenuity and expertise of our educators and to expand opportunities and resources to optimize learning experiences for all students it is well documented it is well documented that all students do not learn the same way the current environment presents an opportunity to cultivate our remote learning to develop methods and modalities that can be used to help teach and reach different styles and levels of learners incorporating remote learning experiences into the traditional classroom can expand the breadth and depth of the learning experience as a district we can and should lead with courage and tenacity thank you candidate fortney your response the covid pandemic has influenced education like nothing else in our lifetime and we are literally trying to keep up and keep everyone engaged and learning in the process there's absolutely nothing ideal about this situation and the open don't open argument that's really torn communities into and put a ridiculous amount of pressure on everyone involved i think the district tried to do the best thing that they could by creating task forces that addressed academic logistic and social emotional aspects of the return to school and i think they did the best they could under terrible situations where everything was changing day to day and sometimes minute by minute with very little direction or leadership from those in power i think it will continue to be a very fluid situation for the rest of the year circumstances are going to change and it's going to require flexibility adaptability and understanding what would i have done differently well i would have wanted to make sure that every student had access to their curriculum via online it isn't ideal work but i'm doing it with special needs kids and it's works i think it might have been it might have helped the community a little bit better with the virtual learning if it had been something besides that uh online academy where not all the subjects or courses were were available but then i definitely would have given more weight to the 38 of the teachers respondents of district survey who said they were not willing to come back those responses have turned into directly at least a dozen certified teacher openings right here in our district right now thank you candidate rich your response thank you well i hope we can remove our masks soon i know we all want to get rid of them but my guess is we're going to be mandated to keep them on at least until after flu season i imagine that's what we're going to get from the state regarding any outbreaks we have protocols in place of course and i have to say i think it's been going better than i thought it would be which tells me that everyone's being diligent both students and staff so thank you for that also want to mention that uh i have submitted a future meeting agenda request to dig deeper into why the webcams in the classroom weren't considered i think we need a more complete review of the decision process that went into getting us back into online school and i think most people would have preferred that option and would have helped with any students that end up in quarantine so they could have followed along with their class thank you thank you candidate thatcher your response yesterday was our past today is today tomorrow is our future we need to be prepared we need to act together we need to be calm we lead by example with that being said we need an effective business continuity plan in place our children and our teachers need us now more than ever we must be prepared for what life hands us we have our schools open our children their teachers are happy to see one another in person this is a time that we come together we grow together we stand with one another and build upon our great district yes covet is out there and yes our kids are in thriving being back in the classroom and yes we will perspire and make this through but again a business continuity plan is essential and effective to make this happen thank you candidate walker your response i envision this year to be a year of change and flexibility and i still think as member rich said if we could have webcams already with children having to quarantine at home that is a 14 day quarantine period is a long time especially for a high school student to miss out on their classes so not having that in place for them is concerning as we continue through the year i do understand that kids coming from foster care i understand that arch a lot of children do need eyes on them it's the only teachers are the eyes many times and we've been going for a long time without their being eyes on kids on the other side we're also in a pandemic and how to navigate that is a difficult task i think our board did what they could assuming that our governor would have state mandates and operations of how to go back to school so that is difficult i myself would have prioritized special education those ratios are very small and yet as far as students to kids so we could have followed cdc guidelines with that yet they are 13 of our population i also would although class reopened that we have lost a lot of students because for the fact of not being comfortable going back i would have had liked to have seen um a virtual option be available for the entire year um i feel like if there was a survey done to parents as difficult it is i worked full time and had my daughter on her chromebook at the same time i think many of us would have seen for the common good so that the class size could stay low and maybe there would be teachers that would have wanted to go that route as well teach virtually um maybe one per grade so those were things i would have liked to have seen happen a little differently thank you and candidate wilson your response thank you it's been a tough year for everyone especially the children my advice is to expect the unexpected and be proactive instead of reactive i understand the difficulties facilitating the many moving parts to day and day operations of ccusd so that's why moving forward it's imperative we have plans in place and be ready in advance if circumstances change and be more prepared if covid19 continues or morphs we will need to be creative with school programs ensure families of ongoing scholastics and keep the wheels on the bus turning allowing the opportunity for families to be heard and given more choices enrolling their children in a safe school environment remember the hybrid solution i referred to earlier these are the types of choices we need to introduce to families if covid19 continues long term or worsens furthermore our teachers should also be given the opportunity to be heard about their own angst and frustrations we owe it to our teachers and students to think outside the box and collaborate collectively if we put our heads together issues encompassing covid19 can be resolved thank you thank you we will now move on to our final question according to some reports arizona is currently ranked 49th in the nation for quality of education how would you ensure that ccusd becomes competitive with the rest of the nation we will begin with candidate fortney well i am passionate about the need to support our schools i've been relentless in communicating that passion and the importance of improving education in arizona we have to bring this issue to our elected officials this is or at least it should be a real non-partisan issue education is the most important tool the society can give its citizens it's the great equalizer so i would be encouraging everyone to get involved starting right now legislators that will be representing us at the state capitol are going to be up for election in six weeks find out who they are and what they stand for and as far as public education funding send them emails or call them tell them that our current and national ranking is unacceptable and that's what they are going to do about it locally i will spread the word that this district has been doing more with less for far too long and encouraging everyone i talk to to do the same everyone needs us every one of us needs to get the message out that our tax dollars should be able to stay in cave creek if you're watching this forum then help by being an advocate for our schools spread the word that upcoming bonds and overrides must pass arizona is 13th lowest property taxes in the nation i'm paying a fraction of what i did back in illinois my child has graduated but i am still committed to supporting a school district that provides a solid workforce better home values and a brighter future for cave creek thank you candidate rich your response thank you i have a short answer first of all i think ccusd is already competitive with the rest of the state we are one of the the best school districts in the county keeping that status is going to depend a lot on the new superintendent he or she is going to be responsible for teacher development keeping open dialogue with the teachers keeping everything so that we can maintain that status as one of the school districts one of the best school districts in the county and in the state thank you thank you candidate thatcher your response thank you this question it goes back to my response of we need to grow our own teachers investing in our teachers and students to build upon our gross domestic product we have the resources we have the ability and we are competitive as it is by nature that we take it upon ourselves to have a voice come together as one live in the life and liberty that csusd matters this is our time these are our teachers our students our schools our family our community and our future we have the ability to grow and it starts at the district level to ensure that our governing board is serving all stakeholders and ensuring that our fiduciary responsibilities are held accountable at the as the district let's be the best of the best set standards create benchmarks for other districts and let's go for the stars thank you candidate walker your response ccusd is a sought after school district in our state we do rank very low nationally and to me a lot of that comes back to the funding i would agree that we need to continue to pass bonds and overrides and if invest in ed is passed hopefully that will give us the tools that we need so that our teachers can earn a better salary and resources can be brought into the classroom that are needed as well i also believe just locally that we have a great community and we have a creative community we have a lot of business owners that impact our community so that unity with our small school district and our community is huge so thank you candidate wilson your response thank you in many reports i referred to ccusd is already competitive in the nation we just need to continue to go above and beyond for example u.s news and world report we are ranked 33.

still not the best but not 49th at any rate we have the tools and the capabilities to be exceptional we have to look at our own way of operating and how we can improve so before we worry about being one of the best districts in the nation we first need to be realistic and focus on being the best district for our community once accomplished then we can work on being the best district in our state ccusd can learn from other top arizona districts who have achieved such daunting goals by improving themselves and restructuring where needed for example vail school district who once was below average school district turned themselves around by collaborating to develop best business best practices to gain progress and growth look at them today vail school district worked together at all costs to accomplish their goals and now stands proud as an elite arizona school district we too can aim high and set an example for other school districts to do the same this triumph will solely depend on the alliance of faculty administrators happy and engaged students community support a fair and transparent leading superintendent and lastly a cooperative governing board thank you and now for miss geiselhofer representing candidate busby thank you as a board member i have limited impact and power on the state's ranking in the nation but i feel we have a wild investment in our district's capacity and ability and ranking and that's good news for us because we're already excelling in many areas as a district in order for us to maintain as a standout district we need to be innovative and creative with both our curriculum and our approaches to education reaching beyond the state standards is a must developing programs that invite students to collaborate create and innovate will assist in extending our students critical thinking skills building a nationally recognized district takes commitment from all stakeholders it also takes a renewed commitment to advance social justice addressing issues of access and equity and to help bridge the achievement gap being competitive at a national level means meeting the needs of the whole student at the local level thank you now we will conclude with the closing statements we will begin with ms geiselhoefer representing candidate busby well in full disclosure i feel a little remiss by not saying we're transparent tonight so she doesn't have it written here but i might find a way to say it thank you again for the ib students and for everyone in attendance for taking time out of their night to be here i take your participation seriously and i appreciate your time as a current governing board member i've demonstrated that i am an outside of the box thinker i'm a listener who wants to hear all sides of the issues before making a decision and above all i'm here for you i'm very proud of the achievements in our classroom and in our district and as we go forward i'm concerned especially for our teaching staff our teaching staff continues to reduce and without excellent teachers leading our classroom and educating our students to the levels that we as the community have come to expect it is going to get increasingly more difficult i will continue to be a relentless advocate for our teachers our students and our classrooms i believe that our community members are valuable resources that can enhance the learning experiences in our classrooms and i advocate for improving dialogue and collaboration within our community committing to a well-prioritized budget is critical this helps to promote trust through our community to continue on the path of success we need to maintain and nurture the district's relationship with the community at large i've appreciated the opportunity to reintroduce myself to you tonight i certainly hope that you have gained a better understanding of who i am and my passion regarding the future success of our district as you leave this forum it's my hope that you truly understand i am an advocate an advocate for our children and our teachers and our community i believe in public education and i'm proud to be part of this community to move our district forward our community deserves thoughtful representation and strong leadership as a school board member i will continue to work with the school and community stakeholders to strive for the finest educational outcomes for all thank you candidate fortney your response uh once again thanks everyone for participating in this very important local event it's a thrill to be running for the school board here in cave creek cave creek gave me my start teaching and that means the world to me back in 2004 my mentor teacher at desert willow became very ill right after school started after only four days as a student teacher i had to take over the class i had the option of going someplace else to get a different mentor teacher but i said absolutely not and with the support of the desert willow principal jana miller at the time i stayed and it was the most gratifying experience i've ever had professionally my first special education director k abrams told me very early that year the number one rule in special education is be flexible these are words i've lived by ever since as your school board member i will be prepared i will be invested i will listen to you and i will be an advocate for public schools both on the general and general level and ccosd and i will be flexible in these times flexibility is the strength that we all need to move forward i thank you for the opportunity to share my thoughts with you if you have any questions about anything that's come up here please go to electforney.com i'll hear from you and i'll respond to you thank you thank you candidate rich your response thank you all for either coming out or watching wherever you are i want to thank the ib students especially you did a great job thank you i've lived in the district since 2013 my family is going to stay here for a good while we're not going anywhere we love it here we're dedicated to the district i've served one term on the board and i have to say it looks like the next four years we're going to have a lot to deal with but the bottom line is everything that the district has to deal with in the next term all comes down to as i've mentioned relationships new relationships we have to build and old ones that need to be repaired i feel that i have an obligation to run to be the the bridge to those relationships also i want to mention uh something on the teacher retention i know there are a lot of teachers that wanted to stay that simply couldn't afford to stay and there are a lot of teachers that are staying here now that are only staying here because they have a spouse that can support them financially that's an unfortunate situation i hope that going forward we can all work together to do something about that thank you thank you candidate thatcher your response thank you again jessica and nicole for putting together this wonderful event thank you to those that are in attendance in person and online streaming i believe a strong public school district is essential for the future not only for our children but for our community as a whole as i stated previously we are a small community of seven brick and mortar schools and one virtual school our enrollment is around 4 900 students right now with the appropriate measures in place we will chart the course for our district wide growth in academics athletics vocational training arts clubs and more as we navigate through these unpredecent times the ccusd governing board must incorporate innovation into the discussion today's issues come with no playbook to successfully lead the district through these trying times we require appropriate goal setting innovation and long range planning encouraging community involvement coupled with respectful dialogue and board transparency i feel we will overcome these hurdles i am passionate about creating the best district in arizona therefore i am confident i will make a big difference or a positive difference in the district i ask for your support and vote on november 3rd for the cave creek unified school district governing board thank you very much thank you candidate walker your response thank you everyone for your time this evening just want to close that i am a mother with four kids in the district and that instantly gives me a huge investment just not for my own children but for my whole community i believe in public education especially during a time like covid where there were many options and many people did leave i chose to stay here because i do believe in our district i believe in our teachers and i believe in this community i am creative decisive empathetic compassionate and flexible which i think are all important to have when sitting on a board we all want to invest in our students because they are the future i also want to see our students learn empathy compassion and our district also have equity i believe in uniting our district with our community whether that be through a community garden i'd like to see our stem programs actually work together with our local businesses and our fine arts center attracts a lot of community members that do not even have children in the district which i think is beautiful we are a model district for the state and we can can continue to do that as well and attract more students so that we can continue to grow our budget as well thank you and finally candidate wilson your response thank at the end of the day we all share the same goal it's clear the district has a tremendous amount of support from the candidates and we are fortunate to live in an enriched community that is also encouraging ccusd to thrive as a as a community we need to pull together aim high and strive for excellence we owe it to our children going the extra mile is what it takes to expand this district from good to prodigious as a governing board member i promise to represent the district to the best of my abilities and bring civility and allocate to the table looking forward i hope we can put our differences aside and move toward a common objective the pursuit of better schools for children once again if you are watching tonight i implore the individuals behind the negativity in the community to discontinue this toxic behavior in no way does the antagonism benefit or the wellness of our district or promote the positivity in the community on that note i'd like to thank you all for taking the time out of your day to join us this evening i'd also like to commend the candidates for their commitment if voted as a governing board member i will not let the district community or our children down thank you with that the evening comes to a close we are so glad that you could be here tonight thank you to our candidates for their participation and our staff and volunteers for helping put this event on have a great night

is good evening welcome to max anders field columbus north bulldogs taking on the terre haute braves in a conference matchup i'm joined by john having our the second son of western michigan and the kalamazoo kid good evening john good evening coach how are you it's great to have you good to be here tonight beautiful night for football it certainly is well terre haute north comes into the ball game tonight with a two and three record a lot they won their first two coming in and have lost their three straight and facing the home dogs who are two and two they're off last week they were as you know coach supposed to play mount healthy out of ohio and that game was canceled due to ohio high school teams only playing their conference schedules limited schedule there so the dogs had last week off your thoughts on how the dogs how that week off may or may not affect them yeah i mean i think i think uh you know we get huffman we're gonna get huffman back this week and uh you know it's good to he had a chance to rest so the off week probably helped a little bit for the team we had a couple of bumps and bruises out there so it's good to have a week off from a rest perspective um i think uh what we're seeing we're gonna we're gonna see here in a minute but uh the terre haute team i think has a couple of dings and dents and uh with columbus north team coming back a little bit healthy uh my guess is we're gonna see a lot of columbus north uh offense tonight and um you know we'll we'll see uh how terre haute does but i think we have a they have a couple guys out so we'll see how this goes homecoming night here for the dogs dogs are led by luke hammonds the junior quarterback who's thrown for 636 yards so far this year averaging 159 per game certainly he can run two he's got five excuse me 408 yards on the ground averaging 7.3 yards per carry he's carried the ball 56 times so far this year john do you expect him to yeah the load on the ground this year uh share that a little bit yeah i i like uh i like the hammonds kid i say it every week um you know it'll be nice to see the russell kid too from terre haute they're about the same size and both of them like to run both open can throw it so we should see a good football game from the quarterbacks tonight but i think you'd be really surprised to me with huffman coming back it'd be surprising to me if we didn't see a lot of huffman early but you know columbus north has a great passing game as well so i think we'll see we'll probably see a pretty good blend of passing and running tonight given that they're at full strength you mentioned blake huffman returning this year or this game rather he's the 5 8 180 senior 171 yards per game 513 for the season averaging 6.8 per carry that of course is over three games he sat during the roncalli contest so certainly would expect to see him getting his fair shares of carries tonight you mentioned that the terre haute terre haute north club led by number eight jace russell he's a five nine 170 quarterback uh looks like he's a punter too coach of course he is every good quarterback worth of salt has to be able to punt that's right um i just i'm surprised you know this i think it's the first game and we're always talking about the hammond's kid is not a super big kid and plays he plays big uh this is the first time i think we've seen an opponent that didn't have a quarterback that wasn't six four six three so it'll be good to see two pretty strong tough kids come out tonight play the quarterback position and uh and just just be good good leaders on the field i and think russell with 358 yards passing on the season averaging 71 per game maybe more of a runner than a passer he actually has 367 yards on the ground as a runner um averaging 73 per game and four and a half four and a half yards per attempt yeah and from what we understand is a like we said earlier in the in the you know in the conversation you know sounds like they got a couple of bruised up guys so we're expecting the terre haute team to come out you know maybe three four wide receivers at a time and and they're probably going to get outside the pocket and run around with a little bit and throw it a little uh which will make it a probably a great game um i do think the columbus north defense i like their defensive backs sometimes they get a little too aggressive i think but uh at the end of the day there's some really good defensive backs back there and if terre haute puts it in the air hopefully we'll see a pick or some fun play back there if uh these guys can have a great night on defense so uh i think i think the the bulldogs have a really good chance tonight coach they they continuously score a lot of points the terre haute team hasn't won a game where they've um you know they they haven't scored 30 yet and columbus north has demonstrated that they were they're willing to score 30.

and if uh so i think if terre haute can't keep up with them i think columbus north's gonna you know they'll go out win this game potentially by a couple touchdowns and i i i'm pretty certain that columbus north's going to get to 30 tonight so um yeah i think it's a bulldog i'm picking bulldogs north enters the game two and three as mentioned uh won the first two close contests a matter of fact they won week two against indianapolis tech 6a school since then dropped three straight to three 5a schools bloomington south terre haute south and bloomington north the loss to bloomington north up yeah um but uh there aren't there are not a ton of white jerseys over there so we'll see see how the dogs do here and and as you said i i agree i think they're probably the better team and the stronger team at least on paper audition for a football movie there's a hundred guys down there uh so good to see that many guys coming out and playing football but uh terre haute has you know they got 31 or 32 guys out there tonight so hopefully they'll be able to stick with them it's a long drive from terre haute coach makes for a long night one bus yeah i don't i did not look around the corner i don't i see i do see one charter bus over there there's some restrictions i'm sure on what imagine how many you can get on a bus north will kick off away from the scoreboard my left to the right same on your screen terre haute oh excuse me terre haute north rather clarify that we got two north squads we're probably going to do that a couple of times he kicks away a little pooch high kick received at the 30 and brought down quickly at the 34.

that was arvin holt with the return well here we go i don't know what the temperature is coach but gave me a hard time about wearing a jacket tonight well i i'm not too proud of a guy who would admit admit mistakes or faults and i i may go ahead and own this one earlier we'll let you know if he borrows my jacket folks to give us to huffman off to the right for a gain of about two yards to be second and about seven from the 35. my guess is we're going to get a lot more of that huffman right huffman left seems to be the theme dogs came out and trips to the left they balance now with two by two formation number two luke hammond's the the commander the quarterback huffman the running back now in motion comes out in the bubble he's gonna get that bubble pass a bunch of white jerseys out there though yeah that was actually great coverage the terre haute terre haute team knew that one was coming i think it's a pretty good conclusion you see huffman running out to the sideline you're gonna send three or four guys after him so probably a little bit of film study there we have seen that several times from the dogs this year yep so far bing's up third and five ball rests on the 38 yard line left hash redman this time in motion is going to keep it in the middle of 50 for a first down great great blocking up front big hole big hole offensive line did an outstanding job there no huddle for the dogs ball in the middle of the field on the 50 2x2 formation hammonds excuse me trips to the to the right this time empty set hammond's going to throw out to redmond in the flat and he stays up quickly picks up a couple quick ones tackle good coverage there by terre haute north yeah he broke broke the first tackle but that first guy slowed him down enough to get three guys over there second six now ball rests on the 47 yard line two by two formation for the dogs because to redmond hammond no scrambling he's getting out of there he's gonna run this time up ahead he's still understood across the 30 25 huge block up the side big block there huge block cast header i believe no it was uh number four um hayden mcdaniel mcdaniel just absolutely smoked this guy cassette also had a good block earlier in the play right up at about three yards past the line of scrimmage but hey mcdaniel roll back around when hammonds got out there about maybe 15 17 yards down field and just absolutely laid a guy out and allowed hammonds to get another probably seven yards looks like they flagged mcdaniel on that yeah what hit on that it wasn't it wasn't a bad block coach he had his he had his head in front of the shoulder pads really good really actually quite a good quite a good block in my opinion but but it looked painful and those those types of blocks are drawing fouls now compared to where it just probably saying he was defenseless or something like that or maybe the quarterback had already gone past him but um yeah it was it was a pretty good block certainly not in the back two by two formations still be first down since hammonds did pick up the first down redman in motion keeps it uh he's gonna look into the boundary and run it anyways looks quick tonight i mean he's he he's always he's always pretty fast but he's really making quick decisions tonight and getting out of the pocket um probably already got 30 or 40 yards second short now ball on the 30 yard line right hash nine minutes 25 seconds remain in the first quarter no score thanks to huffman hammond's looking down the field castetter overthrows incomplete that'll bring up third and one ball or still remains from the 30 yard line we've seen that post route to him and or to cast that excuse me several times this year for a connection this one was just just over his head a third and one two by two formation for the dogs ball remains on the 30-yard line hammond's in the gun huffman is the back may have been trying to draw a terre haute offsides now they give us to huffman up the middle he's going to easily have a first down up ahead still on his feet across the 20 yard line yeah terre haute thought they had a fumble there and he's on the ground [Music] it doesn't appear that north is having a whole lot of trouble moving the ball so far first down just under nine minutes to go in the first quarter ball on the 20-yard line first intend to go up on the right half trips to the left gave us to huffman again he's bouncing to the outside still on his feet he's got he's brought down there at the 15.

that's a nice play by number 11. devin stidwell for the braves he's a 511 165 senior good open field tackle call second and four now ball on the 12 yard line no huddle for the dogs redmond's the back and is going to keep it this time go to the boundary looking to cut back and he's not going to get anywhere this time call that a gain of one and it's going to be about third and two balls on the 10-yard line left left hash no huddle again for the dogs trips to the right trips to the field this time redmond's still the back hammond's in the gun third and one they gave is to redmond and he is close to a first down yeah first down yeah you know it's nice for redmond right he um he got some time uh when uh huffman went out a few weeks ago coach um redmond came in had had a really nice game actually so it's good that he's still in there helping out probably getting huffman up to speed which is really cool for redmond first and goal now from the six two by two formation hams looking to pass oh he's got it now he'll run to the left flat down he's gonna score but there is a flag on the field it looks like a little bit of a hold cast on the right side could have been hold on one of the wideouts keegan rather confident against his point indication yep indication is that it is haute north my guess they were holding one of the wideouts coach coach bless thinks about it for a second and a half and go ahead and accept the touchdown and just like that the dogs lead 6-0 yeah tim bless on the hunt for his 150th career win here tonight he's getting it tonight coach i think you're probably right extra point is up and good the scoreboard reads 7-0 7-13 remains here in the first quarter at max anders field good first drive uh bulldogs look fresh you were asking about whether or not the week off would help him it looks like it helped him a lot um came out a pretty good balanced attack through the ball ran the ball um they did drop back to pass quite a bit right they looked to throw a lot more there than run and then hammons took off with it a few times with some really good really good plays there coach appreciate the support of our sponsors tonight ruloff mortgage ovation technology group first financial bank columbus wealth jolie rentals and joe lee development and overhead door of south central indiana i want to make sure you stick around with us at halftime we will have a performance by the sound of north and um featuring our our homecoming court homecoming parade nope nothing better i've never commented a homecoming court before coach have you no we'll handle it though we'll find out where you were at in the whole thing when uh when you went through the home car i'm sure you were some kind of like king of the quarter oh what i call that i never i don't know when you're the most handsome man alive no that wasn't that wasn't my thing yeah no it's not my lovely wife though was was homecoming queen and oh she's super clean you just told the whole world that i'm sure she is sitting at home just love you know we i like to poke at her once in a while that's nice i'm gonna have to remember that brittany that kick is deep in the end zone by carter ward and the braves are bringing out you know i was i was thinking what are we going to talk about tonight i was thinking maybe 80s sitcoms you know things that were you know make our crowd laugh a little bit and i and i realize that you being in the homecoming court might be funnier than that yeah it would certainly be more funny but there's just no you know i can turn around to you to see what you're but there's just no story with me with homecoming no and i i was i i'm sad i should make one up i wasn't part of it either nobody would know that i feel about two formation here for the braves yeah they just got the old their slot guy can't get a number right now the slot moved he's getting excited you know first couple plays talk about this all the time coach you get a little giddy first couple plays especially when you're gonna come out and throw the ball probably that's what we think they're gonna do come on throw it quite a bit the wide outs get a little excited about having a game where the ball is gonna be in the air 50 times same formation here for the braves two by two formation first and fifteen balls in the 15 yard line russell the quarterback in the gun cherry the running back switches positions now motion no they don't like it and time out for the dogs oh excuse me time out for the braves the far side officials they just don't look settled yeah the far side officials still to the timeout for north but that was a that was a terre haute timeout so 80s 80s sitcoms you're making assumptions on our viewership that uh there's a uh certain that there are age or demographic or or that would be just talk or yeah i mean at least the people that can that can find any humor in what we talk about are from our demographic or just turn it off exactly during that time we're turning the audio down maybe there's a few friends that listen to the radio that's what i used to do that's nice doing poor commentating is just i'm trying to turn the audio down right yeah we have a couple very loved friends that what was it during the east east north game where we were we were told that we were turned off we were blamed as having bias we did we got blamed for having bias apparently apparently we love the bulldogs too much that's okay we are sitting in their press box that's okay yeah all right here we go again first and 15 now ball still on the 15 yard line see if they can get it started this time they'll line up trips to the left and they gave us jerry the back comes ahead for about gain of three he's a pretty stout young man royce lofton on the no roy slothing on the tackle in there as well yeah i'll be second down in about 12.

same formation trips to the left back to pass rolling left this time that ball is complete on the sidelines they're going to give him the foot down he got shoved out of balance he he he definitely landed in the white powder over there and uh they gave it to him anyway it was a big shove so good catch and throw there by by the braves devin stidwell on the reception for the braves and it's first down ball on the 30-yard line two by two formation same motion we saw before like a little orbit thing there and that is swallowed up by a host of dogs very quickly including luke bless and adam schwartz in there on the tackle yeah you wonder if they're going to give it i always wonder about the orbit they're running this guy back behind the quarterback i know i always wonder if he's going to get the ball he's more of a distraction we'll see i guess they're going to have to give him the ball once a while otherwise the bulldogs won't won't pull anybody out there in the box and i don't know so no i don't think so trips to the right trips to the field this time second down and ten six minutes remain in the first quarter oh great play design run to russell here he's gonna get outside of and get outside of a couple of dogs defenders there neil likens had a beat on him and yeah neil looked like he had him that's why i said great play i think he looked like he was gonna wrap him up right there and for about a three yard loss and and he and he's just a quick guy right he's pretty left to right agile and he just moved away from him lycan's listed at 245 and russell listed at 170 so that's what happened there i mean this kid's their first kid under 200 pounds and under six feet that we've seen other than hammonds he's a good athlete yeah he's really cool third and five now for terre haute russell's gonna pull it now he's gonna run it and brought down for no gain yeah really good interior line play right there uh bulldogs front four looked looked outstanding looked like he was gonna get tackled for a loss and maybe a one maybe one yard gain there andrew mulder on the tackle for the dogs there i'll bring out a terre haute punt team spread punt formation rugby style wow get that ball away fair catch signaled they're gonna let it roll down about the 36 tyler blythe almost i mean i think he was surprised he was back there with him he looked like he could have blocked that one he keeps running that's uh that's blocked for sure change of possession here be first and ten for the dogs on the 36-yard line ball right in the middle of the field at some point i think you're going to see cass that are in the scene they're playing at least the first set of downs looked like they were playing man-to-man and i think cass setters pretty quick i'd be surprised we don't see one down the center of the field at some point to cass center trips to the right huffman in the backfield now for the dogs they give this to huffman guards pool and ooh he almost gets loose he's his shoelace away from going i'm getting him about eight yards there for the dogs yeah you know what here we are mine yeah if you're wondering about huffman i mean it looks looks like he's through the injury he's running hard he looks yep looks 100 to me same formation trips to the right with the tight end same play this time he's going to give it to huffman again and stopped oh balls drops it yeah it's on the ground picked up by it's going away you know i i don't know what happened there exactly huffman just dropped it on the ground he didn't really get hit too hard or anything it looked like he might have been changing the ball over from one arm to the other and he just dropped it and maybe there's a little rust there he looks he looks like he's ready to play football that's just a maybe a small error from not playing for a few weeks he's the kind of kid that one one mistake like that might yeah he's got to take a shake it quick he's gonna take us you're gonna take a 60-yard walk and uh he's gonna come back come out with a little bit of steam he'll be fine yeah he gave us to charity and he stopped immediately at the line of scrimmage there by the dogs led by your boy savion banks i love savion he is a big dude hey this this uh this this cherry kid is big too though right i mean he's he's a load to bring down 511 200 pound junior i mean that's that's no kidding 511 200 running straight down hillary is a lot jet motion this time by the berets oh my oh months out there running tip drill almost ran into himself tipped it up almost almost an interception there if they're paying attention coach bless having a conversation with the side official that that slot in jet motion was i don't know if you noticed coach but he was he was headed downfield before that ball was snapped and yeah i hear coach bless saw it down there and made a point to remind the official what's going on yeah their slot guys have been uh eager uh almost every play so far they're leaning and getting started at least right at the snap third and ten now ball on the right hash trips to the left back to passes russell he's gonna look for a screen across the middle oh it's just dropping it's just dropped drop pass bring up fourth down and a punt team i mean it's well designed play what they try to do there is a little underneath crossing route with a try to lose your man and the crisscross there with a tight end and the slot guy just drops it yes he actually probably had the first down if he comes down with that ball he's gonna get another three or four yards at least low snap this time punts away and fair catch called for at the 11.

yeah that good really good decision there good catch that ball go the ball hits the ground it's going to go out at the probably the five or the six yard line and so if you're sitting at home wonder why he caught the ball in the 11 is because they don't want to start on the they don't want to start on the 6th they'd rather start on the 11. and if you're a young punter at home and that far down the field you always want to try to pin somebody in the corner for that reason now the old trash can drill put the trash can over there on the five-yard line try to kick it in there dogs with the ball now first and ten balling the 11 trips to the redmond field and redmond with the carry across the 15 about the 17 for a nice six yard gain nice run for redmond so you were you were homecoming king how many times coach [Laughter] never happened and and counting oh you're still eligible then yeah it could happen i guess we could have the old man challenge see which one of us gets elected first one the first one to three wins two by two formation here haman's scrambling he's got to get rid of it still got time and he's brought down that he's got a yard still moving it's uh he's fun to watch he just ran 50 yards to gain two got a yard and a half yeah that's right two 50 for two he's uh what do you call that coach is four yards shorter than 20.

can you see that it's about four inches four inches sorry yeah third down now ball on the left hash oh he got him there it is that's first down got that defensive in and jump across you got a free first down that's a that's a stat pattern for luke hammonds to scramble that far and get a couple runs and turn that tackle for loss into a short game as we say in the stat buck yeah because the whole time he's running it you're thinking just throw it away just throw it away but he turns it into something which is great and if you're terre haute right now you know we can't miss that last play that is an absolute killer right you just gave a first down up on a really a mental error jumping off sides he had the team you had to columns north pinned on the 11 you had at least third down maybe fourth down coming up and uh yeah now they're on the 30.

second and six they give us to hammond excuse me huffman again across the 34 to be about a yard short be third and one well that's redmond all right excuse me yeah good run balanced attack so far between redmond and huffman official timeout looks like a got a something's going on with one of their defensive linemen number 50. doesn't look like an injury yeah maybe he's got a chin strap or dealing her snap hopefully he's okay two by two formation third and one for the dogs on the 34 yard line left hash hammond's in the gun give us to redmond he's got room to go yeah oh he sneaks on his feet still on his feet still on his feet yep still on his feet across the 47 first down that's fantastic running in the offensive lines got you know those guys the big guys get in there and they push them five more yards they love that kind of stuff right they get to push the pile good job the front line by columbus north seems to be in control right now that line of scrimmage is moving two yards in the blue direction every single play it seems and cast center cast header with the catch cross toward another first down for the dogs yep nice catch yeah cassette just ran a little kind of it's called a whip route kind of a little slant and then to the out nice nice pattern actually ran a nice route ends up turning five yard catch into a 10-yard game they're gonna call it second short they gave us to redmond again if you're watching this you're watching the wide out if you're paying attention to the wide outs at columbus north they're running a lot of on these run plays they're they're all running two and three yard kind of hitch routes you know a little what look like set up as screen routes i think it's all set up right they're going down the field at some point here down the middle of the field soon first down for the dogs two by two formation there comes back to pass looking's got all kinds of time down field and that is a complete pass for a dog yeah big touchdown sean patel yeah with the score uh good good catch hit him right in stride that's a great catch great great great throw thought it was scruggs for a minute and great catch by uh number 15 mr patel plenty of plenty of coverage there too he was not he was not wide open that ball was on the money in a good catch good throw what an award kicker i really thought he did honestly i thought i thought ham has held it too long i thought he i i thought he was just gonna end up having to throw it away throws a perfect ball [Music] me [Music] yeah that hot log didn't go very far no i thought you know what the beef and cheddar would have done no it's probably been on the countertop for a while or something right in the fridge now i'll be ready for you tell him he missed it i know brixie would like a chef roxy welcome back max anders field dogs lead 14-0 12.9 seconds remain here in the first quarter and carter ward set to kick it away from the 40.

so you weren't you weren't in the homecoming court at all you were not in were you in the band i mean were you a i was instrumental guys i was in the locker room no i mean in general like were you were you involved instrumentally i mean are you musical no no no on the football team in the second room okay sorry to disappoint the ball's gonna be bounced outside really really you know down at the 2018 tackle great tackle good return and a great tackle [Music] number 32 bryce abner good for bryce everybody looks like a home i was i was to bring john dinner beef and cheddar tonight and i failed so that's the it's the point of conversation yeah hopefully he forgives and forgets here by half time but wow it's beef and cheddar i mean everybody likes that yeah if if if we had a sponsorship i would name where it came from but i i don't i don't feel like i can yeah we don't have that first first and ten orbit motion again this time i'm going to give it to cherry the middle and he's stopped for no gain maybe a loss of two [Music] yeah the end of the first quarter i think it's you know jerry's you could tell he's a strong and tough kid and runs downhill i think columbus north defensive line just just a bit bigger maybe a bit faster than the terre haute north offensive line a special thanks to our sponsors tonight ruoff mortgage ovation technology group first financial bank columbus wealth jolie rentals and jelly development overhead door of south central indiana and maybe maybe the makers of a beef and cheddar in the future we'll see so coach you you were or you were not part of the homecoming court no i i was not part of it do you wish you were is that is that a sore response i mean i would have liked to be involved it's always a nice compliment you know you're out there and you're making your mom proud you know that kind of thing is that moment kind of hanging with you are you well we shouldn't talk about it i think my mom's proud well certainly despite the fact that even though i wasn't the homecoming king that's my point i mean we'll have to ask her tomorrow she's going to come watch the little guys play tomorrow so we'll have to ask her tomorrow she feels about it we graduated 400 kids 399 we're not homecoming king no you know why he's still successful no see here's the i graduated 153 well 154 then we're not yeah and they're relatively successful people we made it through oh quick pass oh really close i you know what everybody in front of us down here in front of the window is saying that that flag should not have been thrown unfortunately uh number seven got there just a splash early mr holt i like the aggressive defensive back play uh but he did he did bump him just a bit uh actually bumped it pretty good certainly could have gone either way yeah it was close coach bless not thinking it could have gone coach bus standing there like he could have eaten the flag yeah he's upset that's all right you know sometimes what do you think coach i mean officials do they pay attention to the scoreboard you know get a close play like that and they think it's 14 nothing and they think ah come on i don't know if 14 nothing starts helping calls but if it's 38 to nothing then yeah then you know the flags are absolutely support flags absolutely and and i don't blame one bit nah first down ball in 42 for terre haute start the second quarter and give us to the back this time and i tell you though he is her hoe team trying to run it right at the columbus north defense i mean that's full back tailback over the guard i just don't think that's gonna work i'd love to see him try it about 15 more times to see if the columbus north team will get will it slow him down a little bit i don't know i haven't had much success running it straight ahead yet adam schwartz on the stop there for the dogs and a host of other hosts of other north defenders second nate looking for the bubbles he's going down downtown this time good good defensive play wow strong coverage that's just great cover right there i mean we've talked about charlie before he's good defensive back that is he is on him as close as you can get without bumping him nice play yeah i absolutely could not cover that any better than what charlie did right there ran with him well turned his head at the right time and yeah that's the result third and eight now for the braves don't have my stat sheet in front of me coach but you might know i don't know if terre haute has obtained a first down yet uh do not maybe the first drive that had won quick pass across the middle is falls to the turf luke bless and holt on the coverage and that brings up another fourth down you know it's it's i get that you know terre haute's trying to pound it in in the middle a little bit and then they go to the passing game you actually have to pound it in the middle successfully to loosen up the defense right now the front four of columbus north is taking care of business allowing their other seven guys to play pass coverage on the passing downs i mean it's just almost blocked my goodness that's getting closer every time fair catch by scruggs drugs does nice job their job catching it at the 28 and that's where north will take over yeah i think i think we're gonna still we'll still see we haven't seen uh scruggs or cassette or yet tonight catch any kind of real big big plays i don't think either one of uh cassiter i think has it has a catch but i think both these guys are gonna have a big catch before the end of the night cast editor with one catch for 10 yards so far certainly with the balance attack of huffman and and um redmond you would expect they'd uh continue with that as i say that huffman out in motion they throw the bubble out to him and he's the blind quickly but stays on his feet griffin graham he's a 5 8 junior for terre haute great job but just bounced right off and didn't get a wrap and huffman gets two yards that huffman yeah when's the last time you saw a high school team in a huddle i'm not sure is that are those days go on coach my immediate reaction is i hope so i would agree i mean there's so many ways to communicate now you know quarterbacks basically as soon as he's either released the ball got no i mean he's over he's looking directly at the quarterback's coach the offensive coordinator in the i mean it you know it's too easy to run without huddling in my opinion i mean we're even seeing it with the little guys right i mean your little guy team is not huddling at all right yeah i i think we've only seen a couple teams this year at the middle school level being huddles yeah hammond's on a carry this time and he's going to be stopped to go nowhere that'll bring up a fourth down and a bulldog personnel change and they'll punt the ball away yeah that's a good stop for uh terre haute i mean that that right there um if it goes down and turns into another touchdown uh terre haute is pretty much done for the night and feeling bad about things if they can actually you know get this ball back after turnover on downs up through the punt and come down and maybe score a touchdown they're feeling great balls off the side of the foot there yeah not the kick not the kick that we wanted maybe maybe 25 yards [Music] we'll see where he walks this back up yeah it's 25 yards i mean the marks at the 42 i think that's awfully generous for the dogs yeah i think the yeah because the sideline caught it at the 43 and he was five yards out of bounds he did that's funny hey coach is paying attention to the game tonight folks i've always he's always been intrigued by how accurate it is when the when the back judge holds his arm out in a straight line and then the side judge walks up until he's perpendicular and that's the spot oh that's like we jumped early motion there this is how everything in the world should be leveled though right like two guys standing across the field from each other you know like one guy walks towards the other guy until they get to equal right completely does that look good yeah it looks great matter of fact i'll go so far to say if we if we employ that strategy in a lot of different areas in the country right now i think we'll be a lot better off you know what people walking towards each other it's about time for that isn't it two guys at a distance holding their arms out and when they come together then they're both satisfied yeah russell pulls on an option this time he's gonna kick out oh and brought down to the 24-yard line columbus north will take that ball over and i don't know if that was well often yeah royce locked and locked him with the scoop you know what we always talk about this coach you know you get that excitement of i just picked it up and and i'm in the open field i could score you know that that that feeling you get and you're so nervous well did you ever have that happen like did you ever pick one up in the open field and run one back once really and you made it no at east chicago central which i don't really make is at school anymore did you i got no i got tackled at the two and i was playing defensive end and that was i i can tell you exactly where on the field it happened and it still sticks with me hammond's back to pass oh good really good working hard on that corner block there and that's broken up nearly a completed pass through traffic to cast editor incomplete hubman's blocking a kid that is at least twice his size right there does an outstanding job gives uh hammonds a minute to throw that ball it's unfortunate it wasn't a reception was a really good ball [Music] scoop and score for you coach yeah i had a funny one yeah i had a funny one uh we were i took an angle on a guy that was had the whole defense beat he was running down the sideline and i took an angle to catch up with him i wasn't actually going to catch up with him and and he just dropped the ball and it bounced once and it bounced directly into my hands and i just turned it up field and i ran down the sideline and uh it was it was a really unfortunate play for the other kid i mean it was just completely he just dropped huh he just dropped it so you feel bad that was the only one not a compliment to your extreme athletic ability no right placement no no no third and eight for the dogs here balls in the left hash two by two formation redmond now in the game after that huffman carry huffing back he's got us after the red fake just outside of life there bringing up fourth down i thought he had mcdaniel over the middle just maybe the route might have taken just a little too long there for mcdaniel to get that one but he was wide open over the middle if he wanted it but it does prove the point i mean you're you're when you get that and it pops into your hands you're shocked oh you yeah and you got one thing on your mind yeah carter ward on the field for a i'll call it a 38-yard field goal from the left hash no win to contend with kick is up it's low and no good i just got the wrong side of the foot on it there i don't think it was blocked i think it was low coming out of there no it didn't never change direction so this is a squibber well here we are 8 16 remaining in the second quarter and the bulldogs still lead 14-0 let's say a special thanks to the african-american fund of bartholomew county for their sponsorship for tonight's game as well i appreciate their generosity to be able to stream the game to you tonight wherever you are terre haute takes over the ball on the 20.
