there's no more normalcy it's different i would like to mention the fact that the hvac systems is still a major problem the classroom windows should be open there needs to be fresh air so when you're coming in so no one is breathing the stale possibly affected air so i would make sure that everybody is wearing layers when kids come to school that are in for a b please wear some other layers so you're not you know chilly in class because we need to have fresh air into the building another issue is the fact that students are entering the schools without parents responding to the covered questionnaire this is a health and safety issue towards other students and staff and i would feel horrible if another student or staff member brought the virus home and something happens so that needs to be clarified and to make sure that all the parents are filling that out and the kids are checked before they enter the school now next you'll hear from andrea about the fight and uh pride and fast what we're doing in clifton and i won't say anything all right um other good news the njea has given me a consultant to work with so we can give different diversity groups voices in our district one's going to be the latino groups and i've been lucky enough to work with fahim for our arabic parents and teachers i began working with him to start this we are working on a list so i can contact other parents and teachers so they can have a voice since covet it has been difficult to work on this of late but i look forward to continue working on this to make sure that all of our different diversity groups will have a voice the njea does have a member of color group so i can always get contact with them to put the different groups in there there's also a lgbtq plus group so i'd be glad to help out with that diversity is important cultural sensitivity and compassion are paramount if clifton one is going to continue we must look out for the icebergs we must be united thank you very much thank you miss la lama miss howard and again if you're just on here and you're going to speak be speaking dustin i didn't see the name and address thank you miss howard hi good evening everybody i just wanted to say i know that um the board along with dr robert tosie worked long and hard and debated long and hard if school was going to open school wasn't going to open and what that would look like i know that it got pushed back but i can say as a parent saturday night or sunday night was almost almost like christmas eve in my house my student my children were so excited to go back to school all of my kids went in because my oldest who's at woodrow was a hybrid a so all of my kids went in to school on monday i raced back home after school because i was able to leave and they were all smiles when they came back i have been in contact with both mr healey and my daughter's team at woodrow i felt like the reopening was really well she had a really good time um she enjoyed seeing all of her teachers the bus came it came almost on time we didn't have to wait she just got she got dropped off on the bus there's a new drop off line that was started at school 15 my husband went through it he said that it went off without a hitch so i just really want to say thank you and thank you to the administration and um i feel like that the opening went really well i think i mean i can only speak from woodrow wilson and from school 15 but it was a really happy day in our house and all of my kids were back in school today and my oldest can't wait to go back to school on monday so i just wanted to say thank you for all of your work your time your dedication to the superintendent and the board and all the staff that is here in clifton that it was a very positive experience for us so thank you so if your mom or your dad have been diagnosed and you are a close contact the student may be home but he's not coming home until he's finished his 14 days these are students that have got shown symptoms of covid okay a runny nose a little fever or something like that they go out they can if they have not had a close contact they can either get a test if they get their pcr says it's negative then they can come back to the school or if their doctor says you know what it's a strep they've given an alternate diagnosis they've got an ear infection and they've diagnosed it then they can come back to school okay just a couple more um okay so um do we have a number a percentage anything that a particular school would have to hit to justify shutting it down putting the whole school in court um there are some guidelines that the state health department has given the superintendents um that talks about like if you have like more than two cohorts so um the way that mr yemen and 16 viewed it is that i have a cohort here that was going out and i have a cohort here and they decided that that was what was their trigger okay and what is going to get us it seems like we're all living as if we are about one case away from a total shutdown what will get us to the point where we get back to normally are you saying it's a vaccine back to normal yeah i mean where yeah i guess to a degree of normalcy yeah or at least be able to add some days to the school year especially unfortunately i think that there's quite a few things that we're looking at and one of them is yes the governor has given us certain numbers are we in yellow orange red i mean those are very clear triggers for all of us my position is to inform and give that information to jeff i give them to them weekly okay our numbers are going up i provide the the the graphs and stuff like that but i'm in constant contact like if i start saying hey i've got you know five going on and they're affecting everything we're gonna talk we're gonna have that conversation what is the exact trigger i don't know what that exact trigger is i would have to really look to to mr solomon but are we waiting for a vaccine to get to some degree of normalcy in the world of public health yes okay so in other words this is going to go on it all depends on how well we all follow the rules and i think that you know if we are all doing what we're supposed to be doing keeping this six feet that is going to lower our risk there's no perfect but the lower the risk the better it is the problem is is that our people are not following those rules and so it has increased the risk by showing us more cases i i i guess i'm um oh well um don't take aid no no it's okay but i'm just thinking um you know we want more people tested and we're seeing mild cases and i'm not asking for a full blown let's get back to where we were in january but i look at the fallout of living behind mass for kids and i for one just feel um i'm gonna say perhaps we are going we are still living in a um spring situation yes when we're finding yes that really um it's a serious illness i i will never take away from that but there are other serious illnesses that do not require us to live on tender hooks all the time and to hear that i i know the family is the culprit uh family gatherings you know i have some reservations i'm just yeah i have no i i we understand that i mean when we talk about the spring our cases were up and our deaths were up our fatalities were going there right now we're just seeing cases we're not seeing the fatalities so i completely understand you but i also know that we are in a very uncharted territory where we don't know what these long-term effects can be i mean it seems like every day i turn on the news and i'm hearing it's now this study associates it maybe with with the youth with cardiac issues like like scarlet fever did we just don't know that i don't know that the scientists are working on that right now now and so i take my direction from the commissioner of health who takes it from the cdc um so i don't make the rules i just follow the rules um i understand the whole public health perspective behind it um but i do understand where you're coming from because it is hard i do i see it i see it in the faces but i we just don't know enough yet so to answer part of that question and you were asking about the numbers so the state guidance indicates the leading indicator about making decisions about reopening for schools is that low favors more in-person learning that means less than 10 new cases per 100 000 population um the map that's going to be released today has us at five to nine that's obviously an increase moderate um is that's moving toward hybrid learning that's 10 to less than 25 cases so that's kind of like we're moving in that direction over the last couple of weeks toward that moderate stage high being 25 plus new cases per hundred thousand i think when we opened school we looked at the mitigation strategies and realized that the high school level we we really just couldn't spread out 1400 kids and we didn't know what coming back to school would look like now that we're several weeks in i think if the numbers were what they were two to three weeks ago it'd really be pushing for moving to more full unfortunately they're swinging up to the point where the state guidance says you should be going hybrid um i think we really need to watch the numbers over the next couple weeks to see where they go i know like one of the emails we got tonight was a real concern about thanksgiving and should we shut down for two weeks after thanksgiving or something like that that's not something that i would suggest that at this point but you know that's what that's where some people's head is other people are you know we need to go back every day and i i wish we were back every day no doubt about it but um the numbers you know we don't want to go from trying to push back every day with the numbers crawling up and then have to pull what a neighboring district did and go back now full remote for weeks um so it's like walking that tightrope it's uh it kind of stinks it's very challenging especially when when you close down for two weeks you still have the sports going on and so the kids are still out there being exposed to each other it's very challenging it's but we spend a lot of time talking to these people and only seven people from staff yeah right well that was a learning lesson and let me tell you you know reason why you're up in the front and you're away from people is to keep you up there and hopefully a safe place um but in these instances the teachers were going up and down the aisles so again it's just reminding reminding reminding um we set those classrooms up to keep those teachers safe and hopefully to keep them in class thank you and you had some questions yeah uh i have a quick question but i would like to start by saying thank you thank you maura and your staff because you know we've been on overdrive for a long time as many of us have and um my only question is how safe is it because i've been thinking about this how safe is it to be having meetings in our schools um you know it all depends on what your space looks like you know if you have spaces like this you're fine um and it depends on a multitude of like are you projecting your voice out you know there's many factors that go into it um i don't hold i had a small conference room we don't have conferences in there anymore um we all go out into the open space um as best as we can and i've actually encouraged my staff let's you know what let's go for a walking meeting and let's talk about work as we're outside walking i mean we know the best safest place you can be right now is outside um so again it would be again just making sure that you're staying six feet apart keeping your mask on is the most important thing because it's protecting you and is protecting them but again it doesn't i take masks out of the equation when i figure out who is a close contact if you have been less than six feet in a cumulative more than 15 minutes so if you're going out and about and you're walking near them and you've been around them for more than 15 minutes for that day um you're going to be considered a close contact thank you so an evening meeting that is set up in the in the gym like this very spaced out wearing masks that seems to be okay because it's after school hours yes i mean i can not say for me that i have any positive cases that can identify that they got it in a meeting set up like this it is i'm sitting i'm eating where you take your masks off and i'm with you know you're close with your family members they're not staying six feet apart and they didn't know i mean it was a you know they didn't know that this person was contagious so again it's and we look at that when we start talking about the kids and where they are um who are they sitting with at lunch i mean we look at those moments you know how do they eat lunch do they you know we know they're taking their mask off but are they four feet are they looking at each other because that of course is increasing your risk are they sitting at a table where they're both facing out those are all the questions we ask because we know that certain things will keep a lower risk versus an increased risk and i would add for then that diana burns at uh chapman school principal at chapman school loves her tent her big tent out um so hopefully that that hangs out there for a while longer well the tents you know we had scheduled through november 6th we actually talked about about this today you know the obvious issue with the tents is cold you know when it gets into the 40s you know i mean it's going to be way too cold to eat lunch out there so the plan was to take them down november 6th we can look at the forecast which we'll do extend it but maybe thanksgiving if we're lucky that's all we're going to get and so we're going to wind up you know losing about 30 000 square feet of outdoor space and bringing it in and so that is plans are starting to be made for how do we spread out within the footprint of the building chapman you know as an example because the cafeteria is on the lower level to try to keep the students on the lower level we do have the back of the library has an area now used to be a computer lab area that's available we have a band room that we could make available but it's definitely going to present a whole different challenge one of those tenses plus those tents right now if you put any sightings on them which a lot of people aren't you can't it's considered then it's considered an indoor space so that that's the other challenge with those tents but i do have to say i drive by and those chapman kids they are sitting opposite i'm always impressed by it well i think that i think they're using those tent spaces those outdoor spaces for more than just meal times i mean last breaks they're doing some lecture classroom settings out there and it's it's obviously not just chapman it's six of the school buildings yeah yeah have tents including dodd which that's a gigantic tent so we'll continue to do everything that we possibly can we you know again that that's a big consideration when those when we have to take those tents down and yeah fire marshall and the building official were very specific about can't have any sides on the tent you cannot heat the tent because then it becomes essentially an indoor space if you start adding sides thank you that's all i have andrew so i don't have a specific question for you more but i just wanted to make a point where when you spoke with us over the summer about the work that you were doing to keep the ymca camps open holiday hill open and the plan you were doing for the district i just want to say thank you because it gonna be a lot easier for you and your staff of seven in the region it's about sixty thousand people between the three towns you just kind of draw a line in the sand these are the numbers these are the hospitalizations this is the way it's going we're closing everything we're keeping the kids home and you know as a dad and she was able to go back to her some of her summer activities go to summer camp so i just want to say thank you for all the work that you and your team have done we work very hard we take i wish we kept track of how many calls we get um because i think everybody now knows my phone my cell phone number in town um i feel like i try to make myself available as much as possible um and all of my staff does that and you know it is about holding a hand it was like holding hands when we were going to open holding the nurse's hands we're going to all get through this it's just been that way and right now we're just at a different challenge we're going into closed areas it's going to be another different challenge so i am really looking forward to vaccinating thank you tony um yeah so i'm just wondering if you could speak to two general topics both related to sports winter sports jeffrey when would winter sports start high school say not necessarily adult rentals or anything in these schools but yeah it would typically start in december but the state just released today um and i was going to talk a little bit about this in my my report but the state released a schedule for winter sports ciac did however they also said that no winter sport has yet been approved so you know i feel a little bad i'm sure it's disappointed kids to to hear that but it said they can begin practice on november 21st with contests beginning on december 7th um boys and girls basketball ice hockey you'll be allowed to play for a maximum of 16 regular season games no more than two contests per week boys swimming and wrestling 14 regular season meets about two per week indoor track 12 meets um and then the state tournaments run from february 8th to the 21st the um but they do also say in here that it doesn't mean the board has approved any specific sport to play this winner but they released that schedule so for in in practical terms do they actually start practicing on november 21st if indeed the ciac sure approves those sports but they haven't said that yet yeah we learned today the ciac hasn't spoken um hasn't met with the commissioner of health yet regarding winter sports apparently that was supposed to start this week okay that's all we were told and then the um the second part i was wondering about for just if you can speak to it is not just winter sports but slightly outside our purview but they all come to our elementary school youth sports again like what could what could we do is there anything that we could to minimize the risk going forward it's very challenging especially on these youth leagues they're run by volunteers um i've had a few challenging situations my 140 kids eventually was a coach a positive coach um so i've had several positive coaches i've had positive six-year-olds um it ranges all over um have they been like you know everybody gets sick no i mean it just seems like um one or two but you know we're not testing every single person on that team so we're just putting them into quarantine i don't see the negative results so i don't know if the whole team got tested um but they don't have to test they just have to do the 14 days and after 14 days they can then go back to school they don't have to test out um i've been very challenged with you know i've had a little t-ball in cheshire i've had football i've had pop warner i've had we just did a we'll get cross-country team which is a low low risk um we had to put six people on quarantine there um the hot the risks it just seems like the sports because of the nature of sports they're getting closer um there's no sports that's called a no risk that's called sitting home reading a book um you know they're low moderate or high there's a risk and i think that parents need to understand that when they're sending their child children to play a sport there is a risk of disease on transmission if there's an infected person and that's what we're seeing um is it high no but is it happening absolutely um i had the woodland high school football team we've had um like i said there's so many i can't even remember all them um soccer t-ball um also don't forget we're also getting the college kids uh that we're getting positive and a lot of them uh were actually coming back to cheshire to do their quarantine out that was quite common what we found because the isolation places that at the college were less than adequate so the kids were coming home and then quarantined in cheshire so but sports is a very i've spent a lot of time on sports and i've spent a lot of time pushing it off um because in my world i know that you're gonna there's just no way you cannot not if there's an infected person you're most likely gonna be passing it to someone so i'm not a big sports proponent i believe in sports my son played four years of varsity on on you know for cheshire on the soccer team i i think sports are absolutely great i think they're mentally great um there's just a real risk associated with them maura to to first of all i need to get a chance to thank you and your staff as always i very much aware of work you're doing i think our town in particular because you're this is home base for you and your team knows what you're doing the businesses know so they do express a lot of gratitude at least what i'm told and i you know and um hear from jeff almost every day if not multiple times a day i know he's constant contact with you you gotta help with that too so thank you for that oh yeah i'm joking but you know on the sports side of things correct from wrong and i can be honest i it's been such a debacle between the ciac the department of health [Music] the health commissioner in some cases the government and task force was all over the place last couple months as you know but a couple weeks ago i know we got a few emails from the board from some parents because they caught a a few key words from uh governor lamont's press conference at the time almost as if to say the decision restaurant local health district the board of ed but to this day the department of health has not approved basically any plan of attack from the cic for fall sports as far as i understood i don't always talk about seven and seven footballers talk about other things but csc finally gave in and said that there's gonna be no way to meet those guidelines and last i heard there's possibly spring if the schedule allowed has any of that changed has department of health greenlighted anything so i'll just enlighten you public health people were not um not as knowledgeable about sports as others like ciac is i mean that's what they do so i can just give you some insight because i will tell you i think every health director maybe one or two that doesn't agree but i would say that we're all in the same wavelength and same thing with the state department of public health they really were like we are not the experts in sports okay we are experts in disease and how disease transmission happens and our job is to stop disease prevent disease that's what our toolbox is so what happened is the state department of health went to ciac and said look you have medical advisors who can actually talk to us and you know let's have the conversation and and that's where it got muddy and that's where dph kept pushing you know that you know you need to tell us that those strategies are going to work because we in public health have we like to go by science what has been proven by science and there were no scientific data on face masks and football under a mask and so those are how public health makes decisions we look at the data we rate it we analyze it we assess it and um a lot of the times we were just told well this is what we want to do and didn't want to take that hey you need to get us some facts behind that and that was where it it ended yeah because the facts couldn't get brought to us and i thought it was a great idea that um you know the medical directors you know were you know obviously going to the table trying so i think it was early september or middle september they just could not really comply anything to say again to your point that a lot of things weren't proven yet and i bring this up is because you know i've read news articles uh you know other towns that forget we're playing football uh i think one towning meridian at least at least allowing uh teams to use their equipment and their facilities and i understand it's for safety because if you're using the equipment you know it's safe but i feel like something like that is almost being uh aiming and abetting an activity that shouldn't be happening because whether the cic can't pull it off yeah directors i don't know how these leagues that i'm hearing or other intramural things are going to get around that you still well yeah and you know if i you know i struggle because you know we know what is impacted by this covet i know our student athletes especially in the sports arena and competition the the social emotional when i asked about that the leadership the coaching and team skills it's a huge huge right uh positive um positive for them so i i get it and i we want to see him there just like we want to see our kids more days of school what i'm not concerned about is we're bumping them against that low to moderate risk category hitting that you know ninth threshold and we fully hybrid learning i you know it's again i just have a hard time explaining to the the folks and most parents get it you know i think there's parents in town and student athletes that are willing to take the risk and they can opt into it yeah or opt out to it if it was happening but it hasn't officially been blessed at any level and uh i don't know how it's going to get there if our numbers are rising to the point where now the entire school system might be impacted if this trend continues correct last couple weeks uh you know like yourself we're trying to find that fine balance to please everyone but the data doesn't seem to be there too yeah i mean our big thing was trying to be beat the horse of we need to prevent this we need to prevent this we need to prevent this and with all those efforts it just keeps going this way and um it's hard to say you know if it's going this way it's hard for me to say justify i can't justify um you know when i saw the map appear tonight from the governor i was very disheartened by it i i you know i take pride in my health district and i don't want to be on the map that says we're all going getting sick that means i'm not doing my job and so you know i i know what has caused all of this and you know our town like i said we ring waterbury waterbury is the hot zone um and we have a lot of people that come and infiltrate and we reside we're you know they work out there and they come here um and so we have a lot of that um we also have on on our data i've got a one-year-old and a four-year-old an 11 year old and a 12 year old all in one family because once this disease gets virus gets into a family it really takes over so that is why i cannot stress the importance of when people get put into quarantine what truly quarantine means it doesn't mean you're sitting home you got a free ticket out um it means isolating yourself in a separate room hunkering down having very little activity or exposure uh to you you know your parents it means mom you're going to leave the the meal at the door you're going to back away and she's going to take it in the room and this goes for 14 days um you know and and this week with psats i had a lot of kids out on quarantine and it was ps i don't know if it's all the same day i can't remember and it was affecting that so there was a lot of things being impacted a lot of not very happy parents no i and listen i don't think anybody is happy yeah i wish we were happier i know about getting back to normal anytime soon but that being somewhere i just want to wrap up my takeaways uh hearing update more is um still very much into what you talked about when you're here the first time which is all about risk mitigation and you know i know there's folks out there that still you know thinks mass work mass don't work but at the end of the day it's really up to us as adults right to social distance i guess we're in control of the risk right we're found yeah i think you know as a town and you know i know we're doing some schools we try to resonate that message because we can but um we're doing that i am a little you know just certain to hear that you know we're trending upwards uh i didn't see the new map tonight but you know the fact that we're on that cusp of you know now lurching into the moderate uh category of risk could have some other ramifications so it's and then i'll be honest with everyone i i thought it'd be worse than it is right now just the nature of the virus um very happy to hear it's only been a couple actually one case positive in school system um which you know we don't want anybody to get sick but i'd rather have one than versus one hundred or two so we have three all right martin was another one okay also the three that we talked about we had three positive cases so three positive cases dodd highland and norton still if three's better yeah definitely we're doing better than most yeah i thought it'd be worse especially now we're hanging the floor no doubt it could be so again i is a little sobering um yeah i am very happy that when we have these positive cases you know the mitigation strategies have already been taken so i don't have to sit there and put out a whole team because really that's what we were all thinking we're able to look at the actual diagram of the room how the seats are arranged how is that how are they behaving what are their actions and that's how we're making it takes a lot of time but those are i'd rather have that and not put everybody out because i do understand the importance of being in school thank you more i don't agree with anything else uh anna yeah i just have one more question it's sort of related back to the uh the chart that jeff had spoke to about the uh the yellow red levels um so let's say we uh we move into that 10 to 25 area where the people who have tested positive have a low likelihood of being related to the school population can we uh enact mitigation policy as long as possible or would we be forced to go full hybrid because right now you know we're fortunate to have two thirds of our school at full open right now yeah um so would we are we in a position where we can um use those mitigated mitigating strategies that we're using right now longer or are is there a trigger at that level where we hit that that certain threshold and we have to go hybrid no matter what because the governor says we have to no yeah i can answer that question we're not we're not forced per se to follow that guidance so that that first what i just shared with you was the primary the leading indicator then they have a secondary indicator about you know the 70 rolling average of tests then you know whether there's a change in direction is the is the curve going up or down how you know how quickly is it going up or down then you know there are other items to consider such as design and physical space or whatever if we you know next week the numbers came out and we were 12 but we only had six total cases by next week as opposed to the three we have now i wouldn't suggest we go full hybrid or anything like that it you know a couple of meetings ago we talked about vuca you know volatile unique um complex and ambiguous like th this is not there's just not a strict litmus test for this you have to consider so many different variables we wouldn't just go automatically hybrid because that one indicator said so it is a significant number that we're monitoring the steep ascent of the the curve over the last week is something else because i'll tell you it's not just a cheshire problem you know my son's on quarantine right now in wallingford my oldest and there i get a like seemingly a couple emails a day about new positive cases there you know moore's talking about waterbury and wilkin prospect so those are variables we're monitoring and you know we won't just flip the switch based on that one data point but we're looking at a lot of stuff so it begins a process yeah i think i think you when that leading indicator if we go over 10 cases per 100 000 you want to certainly pay even more attention okay and this was a denim five right from the state department i'm sorry dendum was this detailed in yeah this is a denim four four okay yeah we did receive that from the cave a little while back read that update the big thing too is you're seeing like i said it runs in the family once it gets into the house they're all ill so you know you could have four of those kids from you know one family so you literally could have two families so you know not eight separate families is different you know you have eight kids but if they're from two families versus eight families it's a different scenario it's a deeper dive into looking at how and why thanks tony yeah i'm just curious to understand this 10 for 100 000.

our staff and our students understand these controls and how the virus spreads and how they play an important role in maintaining a self environment a safe environment and a low risk exposure not only in the workplace and in our schools but during their personal time so that we as we know that it carries back into our sites as well that's my presentation on preparing for school nice and i thank you for your time thank you at this time we are we are we'll welcome any questions from the board thank you mr o'neal diana that was really good um can i talk president okay very sorry sorry um i do i mean it was a really good presentation but i know there are still some people that have additional questions and i want to encourage them to talk to their administration find out what specifics you know that they know that may apply to them that they're concerned about because i've gotten a number of letters from people like what about this what about that so you've covered a lot but they need to know that we've been working on this plan of disinfecting and putting everything up since april you know and that we've bought all kinds of fancy dancy disinfecting machines for these people to wear and take around and use and and all you know you know zora has been on it and um they need to know that we you know maybe they didn't hear a lot but we've done a lot and i mean one of the new things i wasn't aware of was the filtering system so again there's one more thing and so we've done a lot um and they need to know that and maybe if some of them come back to campus they will see what has been done i walked through a number of classrooms at uh one of the campuses the other day and you know there's stickers everywhere desks are set up they also are the maximum so there's you know there's the two different directions of traffic there's little stickers you know an arrow showing you go this way and or that way so a lot has been done and then you know so if they're worried or wondering they need to call their administration and talk to them okay i just wanted to say that well i'd like to add um miss piercy you're absolutely correct um the principal is the plan administrator of the site specific protection plan so i want staff to feel encouraged i want them to question i want them to bring to the attention that they have a concern about their specific room or a specific way in which something was set up because only then can we readdress and and you know we're doing the absolute best job that we can do i can assure you but that doesn't mean we've covered it all it means that we may have missed something that another pair of eyes will help us to address and we are more than happy to do that and that's why we need this layering on it's why i'm so grateful that this district has um uh taken its time to layer on staff because personally i i feel a great sense of responsibility to ensure that every one of those groups has its time that can work with its administrator work with our district officials and ensuring that we adjust any any voids that we may have unintentionally left behind but i thank you for uh uh making note of the fact that i touched on very few um just kind of very high level items that have been done but but the hours that were um that it took for those classrooms for um uh uh the the protocols the meetings the discussions the collaborations were countless thank you diana it's my understanding that um teachers were uh actually they collaborate you collaborated with teachers to actually set up the classrooms we didn't go in there and set up the the classrooms for them so um i'd like to let mr colon speak further but uh what we ended up doing is that um we set up the parameters we did the initial setup for every single classroom uh staying again maintaining that six foot distancing uh making sure that we identified where the teacher taught from in that classroom protecting that teacher's workspace in the event that there was a collab teacher in that room making sure she or he had a protected workspace and then mr colon um ensured that teachers had that opportunity to go in and either review their classroom in person and i also understand um some teachers ask for their administrators to send them photos as well um before we lay down those stickers that that mrs piercy saw and yeah thank you um as part of our our plan for reopening we have a opening of schools task force teacher input group that meets every week and that group um selected teachers representative teachers from that group that went out and actually participated in the initial training um and all the teachers then were invited from that group were invited to their sites when the when the actual um uh a lane of the of the classroom furniture was done in addition to once we completed that process inviting all teachers to come back and view their rooms prior to permanently uh putting labels on on the floors thank you for that and then how often uh do we do we are we gonna need to change those uh filters on the hvac systems i know that's just getting into the weeds but i'm just curious it's just a lot of cost involved in in in the preparation well and i can tell you that on these filters merv 13 actually utilize the same media that n95 masks use so they're not only very costly but they're also very difficult to procure so we want to make sure that we have them in advance if i'm not mistaken i believe the rotation of the filters is between eight to ten weeks um but i can certainly uh verify that if i'm if i haven't hit that much that's good enough i'm gonna thank you let's go ahead jump in oh i just want to thank you uh uh mr claude for for your very in-depth uh explanation i i think this helps people understand the time frame of when people are asked to come back to work so that they can get a feel for what's in their work environment and be made uh that they can make these recommendations or understand why it is a certain way so it's not something you can just walk in and tomorrow you're ready to go it's going to take a while for them to get used to because it is different than what they have been up against before in their uh their work environment so thank you so much for all the work you've done and um i know that we are probably the most prepared district pro maybe in the united states from what i have heard uh based upon all this collaboration that has been going on between uh administration teachers site admin outside consultants just you know everybody really honing in and doing the job that needs to be done so thank you so much all right well i i just want to reiterate um i i know i i received a lot of emails too from uh teachers were concerned about not only the plan but also the the date and you know coming back on campus and uh i i just want to reiterate what our superintendent mentioned at the beginning this is a plan if numbers are going up in our communities we are probably not going to open but this is a plan based on good work on our administration part good work on our teachers part our staff will actually come together how long a period of what you started it off in uh march we started right after we went out and immediately formed the committee in april and so we've been we've been consistent since april and then the teachers have joined um since july and we've been meeting with them every week right so what i want to ask ma uh manuel is that you know basically i've been receiving a lot of emails i want to kind of pinpoint a few of them so that maybe folks are not aware of the process i know i heard in terms of teachers having to go back to their principal to ask that information right so some of the comments that i received was that look we have all these questions and we've not received answers and to that i would say go back to your principal and go through that process of asking the question from your principal who probably might be having the most important information that you're looking for and then the other part is the teachers association has been integral part of this whole planning process so the teacher leaders on your campus site are also privy to this information am i accurate in saying that manual yes that is correct the the teacher um the teacher input group was um was generated from input from our teachers association asta they selected the teachers to be on this committee thank you and then in terms of if there were well another part that i wanted to really emphasize is the cheap the testing part of it for some odd reason the emails that i received kind of gave the impression that some of these teachers didn't know that we had a collaboration between latino health access to test our teachers our staff and our students or the county itself right orange county health agency has multiple super sites one in anaheim convention center one at the orange county fair grounds and i know that there is another or orange county uh the ocapica partnership is coming aboard to test so we have a lot of resources in terms of if you're looking to get tested there are a lot of resources out there where you can go and i work for the county and i know that the testing capacity we have enough testing capacity at anaheim convention center and the orange county fairgrounds so you won't be turned away uh if you if you say that hey i want to get tested uh matter of fact go right now and go ahead and get this i want to chime in because i first like tested at the connection center it was very easy uh 24 hour turnaround i tested negative just everybody know but yes it's it's very simple it's very accessible so i'm glad you're asking that question yeah and then uh the other part is in terms of teachers how much of this information has been communicated to them and what is the plan for us to communicate what we've done so far back to the teachers so that not only teachers but all staff so that they they actually are confident of the work that we're doing to safely bring everybody back on campus thank you mr jabbar um so we've been communicating again through our opening of schools task force teacher input group regularly um as well as through our communication through our pio who has um shared uh information as decisions have been made um in addition to our meetings with our open new school task force stakeholder group and our teacher group we also are meeting regularly with our association presidents um again to to keep them informed um as every step of the way and to get their input so information is going out in multiple modes um to ensure that everybody's up to date but as mr matsuda has said this is a very fluid process there's a lot of unknowns but you know again collectively we've been able to tackle just about everything that has come our way we we have problem solved issues collectively and then as those have been resolved we then share them again through all of those stakeholder groups including our administrators and our principals who are also disseminating information so let me ask you one of those problems right um if there are teachers who are there's some kind of an immune compromise or they they have pre-existing conditions if they communicate that back to their site leadership we wouldn't expect them to be on campus correct mr jackson uh yes if they have a pre-existing condition then they are not um expected to come onto campus they they do work with the specialist in the district to access um various forms of of leave and and what have you but it depends on the specific situation obviously right thank you very much fred and uh i i mentioned this before and i've had this conversation not only with uh mike but also uh grant in terms of our union uh president you know i i'm very confident with what we're doing in terms of our district have confidence in the leadership in terms of meeting and coming up with a great plan my concern that i'm reiterating is that i think we have to pay more attention in terms of the education delivery to our students i mean that's the key that i am looking at i've had multiple conversations with students i've had multiple conversations with parents it is our responsibility to provide a robust good education online to our students i know that this is a pandemic i know that we've gone through some tough challenges and this is new to all of us we're going to find our way and i know that i have conversations in terms of making sure that you know i think mike and i talked about it and i'm sure that this is going to be discussed further in terms of parent learning walks i know that we've done it in a classroom setting but we're doing it on a virtual setting so that our parents are engaged with how to support their kids at home how to be more resourceful in supporting their students so i am more interested in that part uh yes for me safety comes first but i think we're making that first premise is that if if the numbers are not looking good we're not going to ask anyone to come back on campus and that's a given so i want to make sure that that's reiterated not only to our staff and employees but also to parents i i've spoken to enough parents who've said like look i'm i'm not going to send my kid to uh on campus because they see the need and especially in areas the area that i live in uh in the district that i live in there are a lot of uh zip codes which are higher than the state average so i think the community understands that it's just a matter of us as a district we need to refine and make sure that we are delivering a good education to our kids that's it thank you hey any other questions ms smith for coming yes i would like to express gratitude for everyone in the community that is listening to these reports because we are dealing with such an unknown these reports i think gave a sense of safety and comfort for individuals that will be returning to our schools and i think the flexibility of our timeline is understandable that most people feel comfort in the fact that we're not just dictated to one time model and the fact that we're all inclusive was really heartening and i just want to thank the uh for the report okay yeah can i say something in it and marie sure okay um you know this has been tough teachers are working really hard and the students some students are doing well because their teachers are really working hard and presenting some stuff so you've got some kids that are doing great online and then you have others who just aren't cutting it they are playing the games they're reading they're looking at their phone when they're supposed to be in class and so when you talk to some of the teachers you've got you know like 50 50 50 are doing good and 50 percent are aren't you talk to parents who talk about their kids just not being engaged they need that socialization so we've got a myriad number of levels of need kids who love the online kids who can do well online kids who hate online kids who are not doing anything at all and i know we are trying our teachers are trying we have been trying to train our teachers on a variety of methods to try to engage students but like teaching in a classroom you're going to engage some and you're not going to engage others and so i feel like we've got a situation now where a lot of our parents want their kids back in that classroom where they've got that live human connection and other parents no they're they still don't want their kids going and they only want online because their kids are doing fine online and so we as a school district are going to have to try to meet that need of both those camps and that's what we're going to try and do we're trying to come up with a hybrid model for those that want to come back and because education has changed it's never going to be totally the same we're going to have new different ways that we'll have to meet that we're offering different ways we have our cambridge virtual learning which we came up with and is growing large we're going you know and we've already and we have our independent learning centers so we're having all kinds of forms of education to meet all the different needs and um our teachers are trying i know and you know they're working hard and i know a lot of them are really stressed out because they're working really hard and i talk to some you know teachers that say they will get anywhere like a hundred emails a day from parents so because they're trying to work with their kids and it's you know they're they're trying but their kids are dragging their feet or whatever so um we're trying and let's hope we can you know maybe get some kids back in the classroom and those that don't want to and their parents don't want them back in we'll have something for them too okay thank you miss piercy um i just know i've sat on the uh committee uh the opening of task force committee and all of these scenarios uh were discussed and uh you know uh different folks from different places as as diana said you know uh we're not all experts in in what we do and so um all the folks brought um all of their uh their eyes and their lenses to this group and it was just it was amazing and when i go out and talk to my board colleagues out there no one has done anything like this no one has pulled uh their stakeholders with parents our students uh and and pulled their their school community together to talk and to hash out these things the the committee it was very difficult to get through some of the the discussions because you have like anna was saying one side says this and the other side said that so it's been really uh it's been it's been an amazing uh um to see how our district has pulled together uh with our differences and with all of our um our i our own ideas and all of our own and then they've come together and thought about the two most important things they talked about the safety of our kids and the education and the excellence of education and those were the two drivers and then the group formed and the group the group came together and started making really um uh fantastic decisions to move forward and this is a result of this um you know the virtual academy and all of the systems that are being put in place to make sure that everyone is safe and so i can't compliment our district enough uh manuel you're the you're the ring leader of those groups and diana you know uh putting this system together but it's really been a marriage of all of us together working hard and we're not going to it's never going to be perfect this is not what anybody wants it's not what anybody asked for uh we're we're building the rocket ship as we're flying it and but um i would say as as mr o'neal said that this district is probably done the best preparation um as far as far as safety issues and as far as the education of our students and providing the support system um and even your support system with mental health as adela brought to us uh you know we have systems in place so people can get support and we have to remind ourselves that we have to do that we have to ask questions we can't sit in a in a room and say i'm doing everything i can because that's the way you used to do it we've got to do different things and we have to reach out and i thank the teachers who reached out to us i thank the parents who reached out to us we do need to hear your feedback but you also do need to understand that a lot of work has been done this wasn't just you know in the blink of an eye so um thank you for this comprehensive report thank you board members for weighing in thank you staff i know i'm looking at hilda i know you wanted to jump in and explain from your administrative perspective um all the work that's being done too uh we're all working very very hard to make this work and i know that we can i know that we're we're gonna do it and we're gonna we're gonna our systems are in place we have fantastic people and we're going to get through all of this and just remind everybody you know this isn't going to be for the rest of our lives so we have to we have to we have to be flexible and so um let's move on to uh our item 10.2 resolution number 2020 slash twenty one dash bot dash zero four oops i skipped ahead ten points one twenty twelve ten return of students to schools action item second second moved and seconded we've hashed that all out and um roll call vote mr o'neal i'm going to vote i but i just want to make make the point again is this show something black and white what a plan is but it is a plan yesterday we don't know what tomorrow is going to bring so it is flexible and changeable as we progress down the calendar so that's an eye thank you mr jabbar miss piercy i'm going to do like mr o'neal i'm going to say i but i'll tell you when i first saw this i was not in favor of it i thought this is ridiculously long to to you know prepare for something but it was an agreement and let's hope that we end up using all this and needing it so i will say i and also and i agree with mr o'neal that this is tentative this is an attentive agreement that we're going to work on but things can change the smith ms smith we're voting on 10.1 mrs smith it looks like your phone may be muted i have a feeling i was muted and i didn't realize it thank you all of the above is flexible i vote i thank you and i vote i as well and i i really thought that the my questions were answered by uh by the report and it is um it is i don't want to say it's fluid because this is this this is prep we're prepared and we're prepared to the best of our knowledge as of today i don't want people to think that you know this is oh yeah we're just kind of sort of doing no this is preparation and this was this was done very well and so um i am i am uh confident to uh vote i so thank you okay um do we have uh elizabeth still with us i know she had a uh to leave a little bit early did she did she leave okay i wanted to allow her to vote for her on her vote um all right moving on 10.2 resolution number 2020 21-vot 0-4 graduation requirements suspension of civic and service learning hours for the class of 2021 action item so moved second move this second comments or questions on this okay i just had a question um we we do uh i i think i i know how this vote is gonna go so in the spirit of that uh i just wanted to um make sure that we were going to allow certificates of some kind or acknowledgement of our students who have uh met this requirement uh anyway because i i i just have to get a shout out to you know the bros uh for instance they're out there almost every weekend uh volunteering so they've gone well above uh the the 40 hours um especially this summer and i know a lot of our service clubs that are getting together and they still plan on doing that so i just wanted to um to acknowledge that okay okay uh mr o'neal all right mr jabbar hi miss uh piercy bye ms smith aye and i vote i 10.3 uh resolution number 2020 21-b 0-6 requests for proposals for e-rate year 24 telecommunications equipment software and other related electronic and services action item okay uh moved and seconded um mr o'neal hi mr jabbar hi miss piercy aye ms smith hi and i vote i item 10.4 resolution number 2020-21-f 0-4 approval of notice of exemption for the ball junior high school site improvement and modernization product right sorry prep project problem second seconded roll call vote mr o'neal hi this is the bar hi miss piercy aye ms smith aye and i vote i 10.5 resolution number 21-f-05 approval of notice of exemption for the sycamore junior high school site improvement and modernization project action item second moved and seconded mr o'neal question i know i could have asked in the previous one but i figured i'll wait till this one um jennifer in terms of uh my understanding is that both of these projects are not going to be uh community benefit agreement projects correct no they were not included in the the project list we did when we negotiated that in the beginning right in how many projects have we left so far so how many do we have so far we have four major projects five major project lists i'm sorry we have um hope and walker which are part of the the community benefits agreement um we have magnolia which has already started to go underway as a project um and we have western i guess that's four sorry so i think uh i had mentioned this and i asked this question from mike and you prior at the february meeting we did ask as a board to go ahead and open negotiation to include some of these projects and so my understanding with the discussion that i had with you was that both of these projects that ball and sycamore were well underway uh before february in terms of planning so hence even if you would have opened negotiation in february we wouldn't have been able to include that in the uh community benefit agreement is that accurate correct planning for these projects began about two years ago okay so can we go ahead i know that we didn't start negotiation because obviously we gave a directive but we couldn't agenda because of the pandemic which rolled through right after that board meeting we had in february so my question is i know you're going to be gone but i want to give direction to make sure that we are opening negotiation to at least include the western project uh and i think i mentioned this at the february meeting and i don't think we got any opposition from any of the board members i think we had a good track record with cba for our district and i wanted to open that out and make sure that we bring it as a agenda item to include that project uh in the cba so i can i can pass that information on to the interim um colleen patterson to start that project um as well okay and then we will move forward to getting it agendas as it gets finished perfect thank you that's it for me thank you mr jabbar uh call for the vote uh mr o'neal hi mr jabar hi miss piercy ms smith aye and i vote i item 10.6 and so i need to just do a quick shout out to my team um for the hours of work they put into getting these updated and i'm just very proud to get to this point so i just thank you for the moment no yeah by the time i realized that it was already a quarter to six and she was leaving it at six so yeah apologize to her for this vote she'll she'll do it in spirit okay uh action yeah i just wanted to say that you know even through the pandemic we're having these uh student leaders taking the leadership and actually putting together these clubs so kudos to them and this is another way of keeping them engaged so thank you to all the teacher advisors who are actually signing on to support them so thank you so yeah we didn't uh we didn't get emotion yeah we did yeah we did didn't we no because anna and we talked about uh elizabeth so who moved it and whose section i thought i moved it okay or did well one i thought well i'm moving a second whatever okay there you go we'll take calendar mr o'neill i agree with what mr jabar just said and an i miss piercy i and miss smith aye and i vote i as well 1012 agreement leadership education for auhsd lead action research grant action second second you always take the money yes yes ma'am uh mr o'neal hi mr jabbar hi miss piercy i and miss smith i i vote i um question for uh council can i if i word this correctly can i take 1013 and 1017 second ocean by mr casper second by mr pacenti any questions i have a question yes miss beltram um i was looking at the attendance report and we're short roughly 937 students from last february to today's attendance and i was wondering if there's been any um programs or anything like to reach out to those students who have dropped off the rolls to see if they've simply missed the registration or don't understand or in in homes that don't have access to all the internet and or things um you know i just simply just didn't know that school started i don't know if dr roberto has any idea where those kids are today is uh october 15th which is the day we do the official account of how many students we have uh in the clifton public schools it's it's the day that every school district in every in the state does our account so that number you're looking at i can't verify that it is completely accurate however what i can do is tell you after today exactly how many students we had on roll today and how many we had exactly one year ago from there i could determine exactly how many were down 900 seems like a lot um so i don't we didn't have 900 students drop out we didn't have 900 students leave in fact usually usually we go up we have more registration so give me some time to get you a better answer on that i can um because that's something i want to look at the data more closely and give you give you a real solid answer on why that discrepancy looks like it's there okay yeah because looking like about 567 is off from the high school alone so that seems like an entire grade is possibly missing in action somewhere along the way um so the other ones are more you know anecdotal about 30s or so but that one is a large number that's down yeah yeah or something like that yeah any other questions the reason why the 1015 count is so important is because that's the number that drives our state aid so that's why that's extremely important so it's something i'll absolutely make sure we look into and get back to the entire board uh dr arbitosia i don't i don't know if there's uh because i know like with our district um if students lost connectivity or something um they were uh you know i don't i don't know how that attendance factors into that but i know that you know um they were marked as they had issues with connectivity so i don't know if that had anything to do with it um but thank you i'll definitely look into it okay thank you um any other questions yeah on and if i if i might follow up on that um and maybe dr robertosi can can help us at the next board meeting i know our our student figures are rarely in 1007 1009 in that range so this is a drop obviously with the virtual versus an attendance because you're going to give us registrations which is important and that's that could be different from uh actual attendance uh and i know it's it's probably difficult for every teacher to take attendance on a virtual basis so you know i think that's probably i'm only speculating the probably one of the reasons why the numbers are different but i think that's important that when you get get your staff to verify what our actual registration is that would help us better i guess everybody better understand what's going on here thank you absolutely any other see none roll call miss bassford uh yes to the group but i abstain on number one i'm conflicted miss beltran yes mr canola yes got it mr casper yes mr pacenti yes mr smith yes miss danny yes next order business personnel could have a motion for p1 through p21 motion by mr smith second by second second uh second but i'm starving sorry um any questions comments yes abstain on number two name only please miss beltran yes mr casper i'm voting yes and i'm standing on team uh p19 my name only mr percenty yes mr smith yes miss danny yes next order of business is finance and facilities can i have a motion for effort madam chair madam chair hold on mr um it was number 19 9 22.

i mean we're 30 000 people in cheshire or less than that so if we have three cases i'm hearing then there's real problems but i'm i'm not hearing that really right now like um there is i don't know about the third what is the 10 what is the 10 out of 100 000 um i think what he's referring to is the governor's um rate is that correct yeah yeah the guidance on um addendum 4 meaning that uh i'll get you the exact language you need to be an attorney too so it's a seven day rolling um average of new cases per 100 000 population per day so it's it's basically a fractional rolling average like obviously we don't have a hundred thousand yep so ours would be you know a third of that seven uh on a rolling day seven average uh rolling okay so if we had three cases per day for seven days if you say we have thirty two yeah that would be really bad yeah it would be 2.1 cases every seven days would be the equivalent of seven per hundred thousand each each day for seven days increasing it's a rolling average of new cases yeah so 2.1 cases per day on a seven day rolling average so get you to get you to that number so we haven't gotten to 14 cases in a week yet we're darn close we have 14 cases in the community we don't have 14 cases in the schools yeah so 14 cases in the community if it's 2.1 uh actually it's like 2.2 a day you that's why we're five tonight we're just short of hitting that okay yes metric if we have two more cases if tomorrow the the number is three or four cases tomorrow we're probably going to cross that threshold on a seven-day rolling average okay yeah we've been having high cases like i said we haven't seen this kind of numbers of cases since april but you you jeff you're saying you're allowed to segregate those numbers and say if it was unfortunate elam park had 20 cases in one day yes that does not necessarily affect your decisions right yeah that's why maura and i you know have frequent talker miles you know like all the time about what's going on in our school community and then we okay we have to i would ultimately make a recommendation to you if it started to spike i'd i mean it's not necessarily a recommendation i would have to make the decision to close the school or whatever go hybrid and communicate to you and the public why i did that but right now i'm not close to that okay i mean i'm closer to try and put more people in than take more people out yeah but we're certainly you know right now it's a whole pat because of this you know the recent spike over the last week okay thank you yeah so this would be uh constant morris time listening board members have questions the audience arnold just received any questions that maybe moore can answer if i i think we addressed it yeah you know we had we've had 12 covet emails um and there were a handful that we're talking about you know can we get back full time and i think we've talked about that um which is the other day not right now right not right now i mean we want to get back right now but it seems like if we do so right now while the cases are accelerating we could be accelerating our way into a remote learning environment so that that seems to be one of the bigger questions tonight on behalf of all of us and community again thank you thank you you're welcome coming this evening i know you have a long day um i appreciate you being here um it's a pleasure to come out you know part of my job also is to educate you and to work with you all leaders um to help you guide you i mean that's really what my job is um and working really close with the schools to guide them as we're the public health experts um you know so it's really challenging um but that's what we're all in this together so great thank you so much thank you thank you thank you everybody uh moving on and item three i'm not sure any more audience questions at this point there might be someone during your update yeah i mean we could we could hold off to the up it's been a long night for people too i think you know it's it's quarter to nine i know some people have been waiting around yeah what i would say is that you know oh i said we had the 12 questions probably about four of them were when can we get back full time a number of them were about particularly with freshmen in the hybrid schedule at chs i would say quickly speaking to that um you know there it's it's a challenging situation because what we're hearing you know tonight we we have half basically half the students going every other day blending in remote learning we have been shifting to more synchronous instruction meaning students that are home are watching live but i will say to people we're going to devote a lot of time to this topic at monday curriculum committee monday's curriculum committee meeting so you know we are in the process of going more synchronous i'll say we have added more students that are attending every day based on need we will be surveying parents and students about their experience dr gad will be hosting some calls like we did over the summer marlene and i held a bunch of them in early summer she'll be holding some calls to take more feedback is a quick i would say thank you to the parents who did email you know they for the most part were uh very appreciative of the work being done and provided some very good uh constructive feedback for us to consider as we you know look at people's experience so that's that's helpful and i know marlene spent a lot of time with mary uh the last couple of days looking at this and again we'll have more on monday and for those those watching jeff just want to quickly touch upon some of the questions you sent in i i know i'm sure marlene and jeff will dig in a little deeper during the superintendent's update a little while later yep four items which i think we can get through fairly reasonably quickly so if folks are hanging around at a half hour uh pretty sure you more in-depth discussion about um the hybrid model and some of the remote learning days and things that have been changing so hang in there if not you can always watch this recording on youtube that being said i'll move back to report standing committees we uh completed finance earlier we're going to move on to personnel committee which is item b so tim i just want to give an update yeah thank you tommy appreciate it if you're ready um yeah so the personnel committee met last night we had three topics on the agenda which was the superintendent's annual goals and objectives as well as two union contracts the teachers union contract and the administrators union contract uh with regard to the with regard to the uh superintendent's goals uh he provided us with uh with his uh suggestion it included jeff uh it included let me see uh uh social emotional learning was number one the single largest piece of that you were talking about creating a plan for diversity equity and inclusion right the work that we're doing with um circ the state education resource center the second item was uh communications around our website that we've been in the process of rebuilding before covid hit and all of our tech resources were devoted to that uh we're adding surveying around social emotional learning and um well-being and the remote academic experience to that and then the third item was around our goal setting in our vision setting that we were doing every 10 years but that requires a lot of in-person time and we didn't want to sacrifice in-person time for the sake of getting it done uh community input's much more important so we're we're kind of pushing that off a little bit until we can get together in person thank you yeah so with regard to that i mean i i said the shared my thoughts that i brought to the board a year ago which is to have these crafted more as smart goals uh smart as an acronym specific measurable achievable relevant and time-bound and you know in our discussion last night i think that i think the superintendent was uh i think you were basically agreeing with someone as an example talking about better communication but what does that mean well do we have a goal for you know if you want to if you want to amplify your voice or the school's voice get the message out to parents and stuff could you increase the um you know you use social media and you increase that usage by 100 you don't really even have the analytics right now you don't have the data right tony i mean well that's your that's what you do yeah i think we're trying and you know for bombers that didn't hear last night so i think one of the things that jeff brought up about the new website i know this sounds like 15 years ago when i say this but the the current website really doesn't give any any analytics to give the administration idea of a is the right data being found what's being searched for are people getting the answers looking for which you know today that's built into a lot of web-based products so the idea is as tim and ann we're talking last night as well how we measure if the new site's actually helping with uh more reliable and quality communication well you would hope that with the stream online website and updated information if that's more timely and available if uh parents or students or communities are going to search and look for something they're finding it and they're actually reading it and there's there's ways to measure that that we can't do today so we just bat around some ideas not to get into a micro management but there's there's a feedback that will happen with the communication websites and you know jeff's indicating that you know that the software that we're using for what it is um should automatically adjust and capture the fact that people are not finding the answer they're getting alert versus you know we're fighting about it months later from someone that couldn't find something i was going to clip and say i know one way to measure the communication going out is you know and i'm it's a funny post i'm not gonna read the whole thing but we could probably reduce number of run-on sentences that get sent in the letters but the point is the point there is so much information that's you know do you go do you go which where do you go you go social media do you go to the website website doesn't so i think it's going to help with a lot of that so just bear with us i'm glad it's back on for this year and i think that's going to help tremendously for our community just stay updated a little bit more quickly sorry tim no no thank you johnny and the the one other goal that um it kind of had been in the back of my it's something the issue had been in the back of my mind since school had started but it's really um parents are concerned about how uh particularly the hybrid model at the high school parents are concerned that their students their kids uh could fall behind for a variety of reasons um but the what i would really like to see is not just the surveys to see where parents are or how parents feel because i personally believe that as a parent myself last spring i was in the dark so i could answer a survey but i didn't answer it knowledgeably and i'm concerned that there are high school parents who could be in that same situation right now um and so i'm one goal i would like to have is some sort of guide that could give parents an idea of where their kids are supposed to be in their various classes throughout the year um you mentioned last night jeff you mentioned the psat i think that's a great indicator but it's and it's helpful but it's we can't wait a year to for the concern of these parents is we can't wait a year to find out if their kids have fallen behind and i think this is a topic that's going to be addressed in curriculum on monday so i appreciate that you had mentioned a second ago jeff and i think you're thinking about it something along these lines so anyway that's that's it for the personnel committee right now uh so item two under personnel is uh discussion possible approval of the contract between the cheshire board education and the cheshire administrative personnel jeffy vincent you guys want to walk us through yeah the board members do have a memorandum on this i don't want to give an update yeah i think how we got here and what's transpired yeah absolutely thank you uh first of all you know this um fall we were navigating two contracts negotiations um both up for renewal is our administrative team and our teachers uh in either case in both cases they're they're uh guided by state statute timelines we have to enter negotiation meetings with the group if we don't come to a successful resolution on a contract then we have to go to mediation with the group and if that's not successful you have to go to arbitration uh the processes can be you know pretty uh involved uh it can be fairly expensive and at the end of the day when you go to arbitration they're looking at what's the town's ability to pay what is the uh bargaining unit contract what does that look like relative to other communities so specific to our administrators group uh you can look at a couple of different variables there salary is not necessarily as competitive with other like communities but their insurance is favorable to other communities so we went through a pretty lengthy process with them um and i you know the the effort of all of our staff this year has been extraordinary but they also i think are our unions both appreciate the fiscal circumstances of the world right now um and so you know while there were contentious items uh it was civil throughout and that's very much appreciated um vin and i met with our admin team at least five times formally and then several other informal conversations at the end of the day uh we're recommending minor language adjustments to address various issues that are really grounded in legal updates so like our non-discrimination clause for example at the end of our proposal for salary and benefits there are two numbers that really create a overall budget impact and certainly vin could further elaborate on these if need be but uh in each the teacher and the administrator contract there are steps i believe there are five steps in the uh administrator contract and when people matriculate up those steps year over year there's a cost associated with that and then there's a general wage increase that gets applied pretty much to the people that are at top step uh and when we look at that the general wage increase over the next three years uh starting in 21 22 july 1 of 21 it would be 1.3 percent gwi 2.2 and 2.58 raises for the folks at top step most of our administrators are on top step um but the when you factor in the step increases the total all-in number is 1.75 percent in year one 2.5 and 2.65 the insurance the insurance co-shares represent when you have a plan that you take from us an insurance plan the there is a cost that's associated with that plan the example i gave last night was like just call it ten thousand dollars the insurance percentage on that is what the employee pays so this year it's a 10 percent so they would pay a thousand dollars we pay 9 000 of that now next year the cost that insurance is likely to go up i mean most people's insurance go up year over year and so that number will go up the insurance co-share next year goes to 11 then 12 and a half and then 14 percent in the final year the district currently provides hmo and ppo plans uh the cap members right now have to buy up if they want that plan that plan is more expensive than the hsa plan so there's not really a cost impact on that for us but there is an administrative burden uh to to offer that plan to only three or four individuals so after next year the unions agreed to drop that plan um the it's it's uh very common for an administrative bargaining group to have a 403 b retirement contribution uh the contribution um will be an additional 1 000 toward their retirement plan and at the bottom what you see here on this memo that i i provided to you last night tim had asked me for what the um costs are for individual two person and family so you can see the the different plans we offer ppo hmo and hsa the this year the individual hsa plan cost seventy seven hundred and sixty eight dollars the family plan cost about 19 five the times 12 that you see there that's the what they pay per month is to the left of that um so the highlighted 10 percent in the in that column is what the employee pays toward their insurance that's what's going to be going up to 11 12 and a half and 14.

thank you and i want to pull um the 1123 and 11 28. so a motion for the balance mr o'neill do i get a second second okay uh mr o'neal hi mr jabbar aye ms piercy hi miss smith hi and i vote i 11 16 s and 11 1117 second hey mr o'neal epstein mr jabar hi miss piercy aye ms meant i and i vote i 1123 motion second moved in second in uh i just want to point out um that uh i'm just so proud of the relationship that we have with orange county human relations on our bridges program i love the fact that um they've been in our district for 25 years um that's been an amazing partnership they've involved with all of all of the changes in the world and they're helping us to navigate uh some thoughtful dialogue um you uh help us understand each other as if we can and with each other we can't uh empathize with each other uh i love the fact that uh you know they're helping us with our uh student voice and um participation group raising student voice and participation group as well so just wanted to um just to point that out and i appreciate our partnership so with that uh mr o'neal hi mr davar aye ms piercy i and smith i would like to recognize dr dan ninberg who was one of the innovators of this program and he moved away from our area years ago but he's deeply missed and respected and admired and i vote i thank you miss smith and i vote i as well uh 11 28 california student privacy uh you may have a second or all second thank you i just wanted to uh point out that uh you know look at this um our district even in the midst of a covet is still providing our families and our students you know the conditions and the services uh you know that that that we usually provide and um i'm so grateful we chose the vitalink to help us coordinate this and also to put out a plug uh for uh our collagen career fair which will be held uh virtually on uh the 29th of this month so uh i just amazing work everybody just amazing amazing work so with that mr o'neal hi mr dubar aye ms piercy aye ms smith aye and i vote i okay moving on to superintendent staff report um jennifer you have to say something i have two things to say thank you first of all i'd like to uh acknowledge the district for winning its sixth golden bell csba golden bell award in four years and this time the the award uh was for our aim program which everybody knows that's well deserved i want to put a shout out to scott rendell and his team of jay uh as well as uh patty hatcher i also like to thank renee bryan for writing the award but our sixth golden bell in four years and we're on a roll you guys so the second thing i'd like to say is that you know everybody knows the adage that you should leave things better than you found it right and that is true with our exiting cbo jennifer dr jennifer roop and we'd like to on behalf of the district really thank her for uh just an amazing amazing uh work that she's done and for the district uh the number one issue was also you know financial solvency and uh we are in as as bad as this recession is we are in solid footing solid ground we know how much money we have we know where the money is where it's going and um jennifer we're very um very grateful to you uh for your amazing work and also too for your ability to create cohesion uh in between business and ed division it's very common that districts are very siloed right you've been able to bring it help bring it together of course with jaren and manuel and the entire team but uh you just done amazing work and also um having good judgment in terms of hiring people and you've brought some wonderful people into the district we've already seen how talented they are so uh we know you're going to be very successful in menifee so congratulations anyone else yeah i'd like to say uh a few words so um first of all i'd like you know um jennifer we're so proud of you um you know you're going to do an amazing job uh in menifee um this is definitely our loss in their game um it's been an absolute pleasure working with you over the last several years and you know we've we've kind of been partners in crime because of the number of areas that we've had to collaborate in but um i'm i'm going to miss you uh being here you've brought some amazing things to our district i've learned a great deal from you um and i know that you're going to continue to do uh fantastic things moving forward thank you on the diet thankfully he's here um i i just again emery said i needed to say something and i do it's been a pleasure four and a quarter years and um the thing i remember most from walking in on my interview day was the kindness in the district and at that point i didn't know that we were a district of kindness i hadn't heard that and every person i walked by said hello to me greeted me they had no idea who i was um sharon yeager i know she's not on here tonight but yelled across the room you did a great job um after my interview and and there was a bookmark that actually talked about kindness in a basket in the entryway when i entered the foyer and had to wait and i actually took two of them and stuck them in my purse because i thought oh if i don't get this job i'm using this somewhere else um because they truly said what i would what i think a district should be about um and so it has been amazing it is truly a district of kindness um you know mike and his leadership i can't say enough he has trained me well to do this so if i do well it's because i've learned from him um i always say he you know with him it's not thinking outside the box there is no box and that causes us all to be better and um and i appreciate that as a board in my interview i told them how wonderful you guys were and i i kind of told them they had big shoes to fill with me with that because um you guys are so good to us as as a cabinet and as a district um sorry i those of you that know me know i get emotional um and so i just want to thank you guys because truly truly the pleasure has been all mine i am proud that we are leaving i'm leaving in very good financial setting um i teased mike that i'm like gosh i might need some of that money over amenity because i don't think we're quite as good right now but we will get there um and so i just want to thank each of you um for all you've done for me so thank you and like like mike and brad i i echo their sentiments and and i wish you so much um success jennifer i i have learned a lot from you too brad is not the only one and you know one thing i'm gonna miss is that i feel like we do speak sort of a common language sometimes and and um you know i really appreciate that and i think you're gonna take that and do wonderful things in menifee so um i wish you all the best thank you all right mr o'neal oh yeah dr root thank you so much for coming to the district and interviewing and bringing the skills set that you did uh it wasn't just the the business side that you know the financial side you brought you brought the knowledge of being a teacher and a principal uh and and that really made you different from other uh cbo's we've had because you had that knowledge of the division excuse me that that you were able to have a cohesive relationship and not just be a finance person but you were an understanding educator so i know you're going to do well i know that um menifee is is a very lucky district to get you and that uh we're not going to loan you any money your own i wish you well thank you mr o'neal mr jabbar brian were you crying i hear you heard your voice cracking that's old age oh okay but uh jennifer i i can't say enough about you i think uh you and i have had caught multiple multiple conversations and uh and i've mentioned this not only in pro public but also in private uh you were a breath of fresh air uh coming into the district and you know i think uh not only as a board member but i the conversations that i had with different union leaders they had the same thing to say about your transparency in numbers and making sure that they understood the numbers pretty well so i know that you're going to do great work at menifee and again as brian said we're not going to loan you any money uh but you know you are definitely well i know mike will be always available to advise you on things and i i think it says a lot about our district we are producing good leaders so um thank you for your service and uh good luck and madam president is this also the time for board uh comments sure yeah i just wanted to uh take the opportunity to um thank my boss supervisor doug chafee we as a district as as deputy chief of staff for him i had actually called all the school districts and artists in our supervisorial district to ask to support internet access for students in all our school districts and as a result anaheim union high school district is getting close to about 260 thousand dollars worth of its wi-fi on wheels so there's 10 wi-fi on wheels units that we'll be presenting to the district and they will be spread throughout the district for our students needs so i'm very happy to say that it's coming from uh supervisor dan chaffee's office i'm sure we communicated oh i communicated today to mike so we'll be looking forward to delivering those uh in the next couple of weeks or so not a couple of weeks but at least about three weeks so um that plus yesterday's uh north orange county uh north orange county uh rop meeting was uh again always a wonderful meeting we always have some great news there um other than that i don't i don't have anything else thank you thank you mr jabar this miss piercy okay jennifer are you sure you want to leave come on only four and a half years come on here we did now you you know jennifer i'm going to miss you you did a phenomenal job as far as i'm concerned on the insurance committee you've guided us through some really tough things and and we're on top and you've gotten us and kept us there and i'm going to miss you i think you've done a phenomenal job and i yeah we're not going to loan you money but you know but you'll miss us come on this is a family we're not in the point of needing a loan i should have maybe i made it sound worse than it was but no i know you'll you'll take care of them you'll bring them up that's for sure so um i will miss you and you did a phenomenal job like i said okay and i just want to say that i you know like i did go to the insurance meeting yesterday that was really short i was amazed at how short it was but i also want to say you know we went to fully funded our own you know that apo and it has worked out really well and i think that uh you know the fact that we are a self-funded insurance and we've managed to do well and i hope we continue to do so but so far so good but it was under your guidance that we made that jump and i think it was a really wise move oh also this week i attended an orange county business council webinar and listened to that and i also had attended an orange county uh board of edu board webinar and i am i went to coffee with the principal at lexington and what a eye-opener you know for some of these parents and some of the things that you know the questions that they ask and some of the the attitudes and all and i'm going it was a it's a good thing to do if any of the other board members haven't had a chance go to one of those coffees it's it's uh it's interesting i also uh visited lexington and i walked through some of the classrooms to see what had been done walked and you know saw all the footprints and the arrows going different directions and how they've set everything up so just about everything's ready to go there's one classroom that needs a little bit uh different uh furniture because it's not really the right furniture for small classes but they'll get there so and that's just about all that i have on that but i do have one question for for mike i thought we were going to get an update on the survey uh that was sent out stephanie was going to give us are you going to do that in the friday letter let's just put something together i think for the friday you guys get the update okay okay okay thank you thank you miss piercy miss smith alrighty well um i attended the insurance committee and listened in on the discipline committee and yesterday paulina called and asked if i'd like to be on the call to say goodbye to jennifer and i said well i don't think i'm going to be able to do it without crying and menifee doesn't know how lucky they are but we do and as i said to you in the insurance committee meeting your parents created a wonderful human being and whenever i think of you i'm going to think of you with love in my heart you are truly extraordinary thank you from the bottom of my heart jennifer thank you saying goodbye is uh is very difficult because um you know when you spend so much time with um genuine real caring loving people um you become a family so um even though you're how about this how about we're loaning you to menifee and we're alone with menifee but you'll you'll always be you'll always be our family i just can't say enough about what you've done to um to balance not only our financial situation with transparency and accountability but you've balanced our district with humility and love and kindness and so you brought out um you you brought forth um trust and that trust helped transform this district in so many ways that we can't even measure because you know um you don't wanna ever talk about the past or other folks um but you've helped transform this district into uh uh um a moveable pliable just look what we're facing now and look look at all the transformation transformative things that have happened and you have played a major role um on cabinet in in helping um helping us us do that and so um we're going to really miss you um menifee is lucky um but um metaphy is going to be transformed in in ways that they don't even know yet and we look forward to hearing all the good news from you we look forward to uh you know collaborating maybe distancing however we can do it um but we're always here for you and i know that you'll be there for us in case we ever need you um because you know i think we caught called you probably once uh every two weeks so you know i'll just keep calling to check in with you and see how you're doing but we love you um we we needed you um and um you came through for us and we we thank you we're so grateful and we appreciate you thank you so much jennifer and best of luck break a leg that's what i'll say okay um and yeah i attended some meetings and did some things um next board meeting is thursday november 19th uh 2020 at 4 p.m and with that i will uh entertain a motion for maybe thank you sorry that's okay 19. uh motion for f1 through f5 i moved second motion by mr casper second by mr abdrabo questions scene nun roll call actually i i do have a question um is it possible to get a breakdown of all the additional costs due to covid like i know we have dividers we have uh straps that showed for the desks i know the thermostat the thermometers that we're using now is there a way to get a break out of just covered additional cost chromebooks i'm going to defer to mr uc actually if i may is it possible to add to that what we spent on kovid and what we have saved because of kogit in terms of what our normal spending would be so we can see the difference i could work on that mr smith [Music] on uh number one uh is a very generous donation from our boys soccer booster club i just love to see a breakdown of what uh what the money is being used for to what improvements at the field so if i could just get a a breakdown of that but i i'd like to thank the boys uh soccer booster club for this uh very nice donation to uh enhance our boys soccer uh fernando rossi soccer field but i just like a breakdown of what the improvements are thank you um miss danny if i may address that yes uh yeah mr smith that uh the total donation is for the purchase of a sign the whole cost is going towards a sign which will uh be recognizing um all of the past championships for both the boys and girls soccer teams and it's going to be really nice i saw a draft as soon as it's finalized before it's actually put out there i'll definitely share that with the board thank you any other questions mr daley yeah just just to reinforce that there uh there is a uh monument or plaque in i believe it's the northwest corner of the field when the field was dedicated uh to mr rossi so this is i take it in addition uh to enumerate other accomplishments that have happened during the tenure of our soccer team thank you any other comments see none roll call mr abu drabo yeah miss bassaford yes miss beltran mr canova yes mr daley yes mr casper yes mr piscenti yes mr smith yes miss danny yes next order of business is board member comments uh mr daily are you next or is it mr casper i was first last time okay mr casper that's what i thought okay okay i'm going to keep this brief i'd like to thank the retirees as i always do for your dedication to our district um i would also like to thank the boys soccer the boys soccer booster club as well for your gracious donation to the field i'm excited to see you when it does come out i'd like to congratulate miss graziano again our own passaic county teacher of the year uh this past year has been an accomplishment for clifton we first had our board member of the year and now we have our passaic county teacher of the years so we're we're really making it on the map in new jersey finally i'd like to thank all of our speakers that came out tonight i'm happy to hear that everything is running smoothly and i know that the safety of everyone is paramount to our administration so i'm happy to hear that everything is going nicely and i'd also like to thank the cea for your hard work and putting together the pride and fast events that are coming up soon and since it is um halloween coming up soon i hope everyone is safe during this halloween season and uh have fun but also stay safe if there is any all right have a good never uh good evening everyone thank you mr casper uh mr prasanti thank you i just want to congratulate miss graziano also for being a state county teacher here uh with hard work uh dedication and especially going virtual um and all this hybrid stuff i know it's difficult and uh i applaud you for your outstanding accomplishment um i want to thank dr robert tozie again as i always do for us during the district um to go to bring back the kids i think that this is um the proper thing to do i still believe that we should bring them back a little more normalcy is good for for students and children they really need it and i've got a lot of calls thanking us on checking this board for their support to to get these kids back to school and the last thing i have since our meeting is not going to be till the i believe the 12th of november next um we're having a change of command ceremony for the chief of police um clifton the city of clifton named danucci for a while ago thomas ronaldi to the detective he was a defective captain who just became chief now that things have been lifted for outside it'll be outside of city hall in the front of steps on friday november 6th at 3 o'clock uh and we'll have light refreshments to follow um afterwards so i hope people can make it and again uh social distancing mass will be implemented uh for that day so i want to thank everybody again and um have a great night thank you mr presentee mr smith yeah i'm gonna be real brief tonight uh i'd like to uh first just personally thank um all the speakers that came out tonight uh max i i so much enjoy hearing you speak um and giving us detailed information um i apologize if you can't hear me too well so i'm going to be very short i thank uh all the people of the public and my fellow board colleagues that reached out to me after my recent surgery um healing well and uh on my way to recovery so thank you all um i just have a few uh questions uh dr roberto i thought we were gonna have some type of board um um i don't know what it's called but um where we get a list of all the events that are happening in the district um actually come to us about this chipotle fundraiser we may not have known about it i'd love to be able to see where we are on that process of making sure that we get notified of all these things because we very much do want to support our kids i do have a concern about something that was stated at the beginning of the meeting um the first speaker stated that there are numerous of us here in the audience not wearing masks i thought it was our board policy and or regulations that all visitors into our building should uh must be wearing masks so i don't know why people are allowed in the building if they're not wearing a mask i think this needs to be looked into and and tightened up a bit uh max brought it up in school um that we have students that are not wearing masks um that's got to be addressed right away and uh people coming into our uh our board meetings uh that is a board policy and a board function and it has to be adhered to and whatever administration has to do to make sure that this is uh being followed i think that has to uh to take place um smith if i may that that comment i believe was directed towards the people on the stage here oh i'm sorry it wasn't directed towards uh any visitors to our building i got you i'm sorry i did i not being there i didn't see it that way thank you for that clarification um so um yeah i think that was uh the last thing i had but i i again i'm a little concerned and max being in the building and seeing uh students every day um if he has a concern about kids not wearing masks to me there is a concern and i and i and i know dr robitozzi that you'll be on top of that looking into that so thank you everyone thank you madam president congratulations to the state county teacher of the year and clinton's own of course um you know it's it's always a great uh great pride in the city as a community to hybrid remote learning good luck to um all on a great school year students teachers parents administrators you know when i think of my my daughter and stuff from school and just able to see them you know interact with their classmates and have that and that hybrid opportunity is is from my parents my parent perspective is great uh congratulations to the new vp of ccms uh good luck to the football team tomorrow night and um thank you for always your continued work we're going to diversity group uh mr lama asked me to take a look at a arab muslim diversity list and i recommended that a staff member may be more helpful because to be transparent as a board member i'm not allowed to interfere with clipping day-to-day work uh but and i made a superintendent aware about miss what i would recommend to you as well is to keep an arab muslim separate because not all arabs are muslims and not all muslims are arabs so that may be intermingled there so that's one recommendation i able to make for you thank you mr abraham miss beltram i just want to thank all the speakers that um as we said we can come in person or you can also uh continue to call in and hopefully we can keep this hybrid model even when we're done with the new normal and we're back to the regular normal um we all want to go back to normal on that note um as quick as possible at least i do i obviously don't speak for the whole board but personally i think we're all want ready to get back to as close to normal as we can and some of us may be over eager um and maybe the kids in the school are taking off their mask they feel invisible most high school kids feel invisible and hopefully as time goes on they'll learn that it's more you know it's cool to wear masks especially with all the different designs that you have i know i personally have probably like 50 different ones at this point um i was thrilled to see all the comments on facebook showing how much happier people's children were coming home to school we may not always be commenting on facebook but you know that we are seeing everything at least i am um i think it's in our board's prerogative to give our students the best education possible while also keeping everyone as safe as possible which is a hard balance to maintain i'd also like to hope that everyone has an enjoyable halloween as the new normal allows we won't be seeing you until after halloween so i know um some different some other towns are having events i'm not sure if clifton as a town are having any events um and there's ct guidelines onto how to help candy if you so wish to do so individual bags etc but i hope that people figure out a way to keep this tradition alive um with their kids even if it's something within your own family that you do and that's all i have this week thank you miss beltran mr canova all right thank you uh i want to congratulate graziano on an amazing accomplishment to be a top five winner in new jersey i mean that that is something truly amazing it really goes to show how how great our teachers are and really how great you are so congratulations on that um congratulations to our mr casper here on his onsen heroes uh venture um also uh on reopening so i i heard the two parents and speak about their their reactions to and their children's reactions to reopening and i have to share a similar sentiment because my daughters did not want to go back even though i registered with them for in person you know they were dreading to go back because they left the lifestyle of being home and relaxed on the computer um but when they got in and after hearing about their day and picking them up the smiles on their faces and they were so excited and they were just so happy to be back with everyone uh they didn't see it as the new normal they didn't see it as something weird they knew they had to wear their masks because they've been going to cheers so they know that's just you know what we do now and they had a great time so i'm glad to see that that happened i'm glad to see when they went to school they had their temperature checks everyone was was distance there was six feet mark was all over all over the ground they even showed us on uh on an ad hoc back to school night meeting the markers in the school and how they have two different pathways down the hallway to keep everyone distanced so i mean really going to extraordinary events to make to make the kids safe and to make the place a really happy place to be in school so i commend our administration and everyone's working towards it has worked towards it um i'm hoping we continue those meetings meeting around uh getting people back into school and getting things more like what they used to be um so i do support that um i know that we did have a policy for wearing masks i remember going through that in policy there was a amanda and wearing mask so that i believe that's in there already so if someone's taking off their mask i think we already have something outlying you know what happens in those situations so i would just instruct them to see someone not hearing masks and you know to let the teacher know and to go through the route of where you need to take this little llama i couldn't agree more i think everyone does need to work together because if we're not we're just rolling around in circles so i'm glad you're supporting endeavors where people do get to work together so thank you for that and that's all i had tonight thank you thank you mr canova uh mr daley thank you madam president um i'd like to add my congratulations to ms graciano that's a great accomplishment um and if i understand that it's the first time a clifton teacher was ever in that position to be passed county uh teacher of the year that's that's just terrific and um i know that that happiness and pride is shared by everyone in the district uh also thanks to uh congratulating mr swisher on his appointment his uh vice president uh vice principal excuse me of uh of columbus mr casper congratulations on your appointment as a grand pupa [Laughter] so um also uh i would like to ask our board secretary to you madam president if they could share the poor proposals from um uh of the two attorney attorney firms that uh that presented to us tonight um i think it's good to see what's in their proposal as well so they're prepared for when we ever get to vote on that um i would also like to either mail-in drop it off whatever you have to do it's important that you participate in the vote i have a lot of issues the way the governors handle this both from our the way the elections for uh and nominations for school boards it was absolutely horrendous because every county had different uh website information on their website on how you want to register to be a candidate for a particular board of education it was not uniform and i think that the um the state really fell down and i would have liked to seen our voters have the option to to vote either in person or by ballot because some people feel more comfortable doing it one way and if you're going to vote i think every citizen should feel comfortable in the way they cast their vote and come out to vote on one last thing i usually don't talk about family or personal but i'd like to thank all the members of the community in clifton particularly on the well wishes and prayers for our grandson uh nicholas uh he is uh now been declared cancer free after nine months and uh uh and he's uh he's a very energetic kid and fortunately he didn't have a lot of side effects but it was a long process especially not only for his parents but uh for his grandparents and all family members but it turned out pretty much as the doctors predicted but there will be scans going forward just to make sure the cancer doesn't reoccur but right now he's officially been declared cancer-free and again i can't thank everybody in the community enough for their prayers and best wishes throughout the last nine months that concludes my comments thank you mr daily uh madam vice chair of basford wow that's great jim we've been praying i'm so it's it's thank you thank you what else can you say but thank you to the higher power whatever higher power you believe in um to megan graziero congratulations i was online that day i made sure i took personal time off that morning to watch actually watch the ceremony live uh it was a thrill to hear clifton being represented um we're very proud of you thank you for being the best of the best and showing what true excellence in teaching is uh we applaud you for everything we applaud your colleagues for recognizing you and you make clifton shine that's what the best part of everything is um to mr switzer um congratulations and good luck um thank you for coming tonight and um doing that as well to the cea pride and fast wow you guys you're doing pretty good there um and i know it's going to be dispersed in the community in in the most appropriate way uh confident that it'll affect all the children so thank you guys uh you do really great work um uh i just you know talking about voting um i was 14 years old when i cast my mother's ballot there's a jersey journal picture uh i made the front page i have big bonded on my brother found the picture when he was cleaning out some of my dad's stuff so he sent it over to the house and it was good to see that i take my civic duty very carefully i take it very carefully so i had a conversation yesterday with somebody about the bucket of water and i just uh uh uh i know i shared that story with you dr robert tells you about the bucket of water uh so we're in the the auditorium and we're in the gym and the bucket of water spills i can't say to the janitor to clean up the bucket of water i got to get on my phone he's not even there i got to call dr roberto he's home doing his thing with his kids and he's got to call the janitor and tell him to pick up the bucket of water that's how it works that's that's board membership 101 and i had a very kind conversation with a lot of people yesterday my support group and i thank them very much for um reminding me of all the buckets of water that i've never picked up i never ordered to be picked up and i kept in line so thank you guys for being on on my um on my team uh to uh uh the clifton teachers association laura lamanna i heard your words tonight and i heard them well and the one thing that's sticking with me is teamwork over personal ambition that couldn't resonate anymore with everybody on the sport teamwork over personal ambition uh thank you so much for being the leader of the group you're doing a great job uh we we we appreciate you we appreciate everything you do um you come to every meeting you show up you give it you tell us what's going on good bad or ugly and i know this board member appreciates it um halloween coming up ladies and gentlemen whatever it is and whatever you're going to do at halloween please please please be careful and safe um the other thing is uh with the return of school i'm glad to see so many people are happy i am there's so many different opinions on this it's not easy but everybody out there to please be safe i'm not too keen on the numbers it personally affected my family this week it came very close to home uh and we are we are dealing with a very extensive loss in my family so um to everybody out there just please wear your mask it's really important you you may be immune you may you may have uh the antibodies but you may be a carrier so you know this they won't really know what's going on so just be careful and everybody have a good week until next meeting thank you and thank you madam vice chair basford um so first i would like to say um thank you to all the speakers it's great to hear that you know some parents are very excited and their children going back and the smiling faces that's always nice um i want to really tell our um educators um our staff administration everyone that's in the building now in person um thank you for all that you're doing uh for i mean i i really have to you know give a special thanks to the teachers who are working directly with students um as i know that if you're working um in the setting and you're trying to make the virtual and you're trying to make the in person and everything work i know that that's very difficult and even if you've been in education for this long there's so much planning that um takes place so um i want to tell you you know thank you very much um and uh congratulations to miss graziano thank you very much for um making clifton shine you are um it's you know and again to be one of five is definitely you know we in our profession we always seem to be put down a lot of times so it's just great to hear somebody's accomplishments in one of five um in clifton especially thank you um and congratulations to the new vp um mr swisher and um nicholas i saw that you kicked cancer's butt um so um you know i i had uh lost um a cousin's um my cousin lost uh 12 years old she had lost a battle to brain cancer so it was very diff so i'm i'm i'm glad you kicked cancer's butt um and finally just have a safe and happy halloween and that concludes my comments dr arbitosi thank you madam president good evening once again commissioners and members of the community who are joining us at our meeting so we reopened schools this week for in-person learning and i have to tell you that i couldn't be more pleased with the way this week has gone um our staff has been absolutely incredible i mean above and beyond our students showed up did absolutely you know the right thing followed the protocols yeah a few bumps in the road we knew that was gonna happen but on monday i was able to visit five schools on tuesday i was able to visit four more schools this morning i was only able to visit clifton high school for about 45 minutes tomorrow i'll visit a couple more schools and by the mid middle of next week i will have visited every school so if i haven't gotten to you yet i'll be there i promise um and just what i saw it just reminded me that all the hard work and all the stress and all the questions in my mind about whether or not we should reopen i knew it was absolutely the right decision uh absolutely the right decision i just want to caution everybody about wanting to pull this band-aid off even more quickly and and getting back to you know what we were doing a year ago a a full schedule from you know eight to three with kids you know 500 kids eating in a cafeteria we want to be very very careful about how we do this this needs to be done in phases this is phase two right when we get to phase three we'll depend on a lot of things but i'm really happy about how this week has gone so far and um cannot express my gratitude and appreciation uh anymore to our faculty and staff and our administrators for the job they have done in welcoming back our students thank you so much congratulations to megan uh say it again you've just made us all uh so proud we are so lucky to have you uh in clifton and um we're so very very very proud of you and listen you know the state of new jersey they the dear we they make mistakes all the time and you should have won the whole thing but you know i'm sure the person who won is a very good teacher but you know you're number one in our hearts megan so congratulations on a great honor just want to address the couple issues that that came up tonight um through public comment and through conversation with our board um in regards to ventilation in schools let's let's talk about ventilation and and getting an industrial hygienist to come into our schools ventilation is important i agree ventilation is important what is more important right now in our schools is wearing masks and social distancing and opening windows we could bring in an industrial hygienist we could hire our architect to come in and look at all of our unit ventilators and they're going to tell us things like yes you have you have ventilation systems that are 60 years old they need to be replaced i'm not opposed to doing that but i'm not sure we're going to learn anything in the in addition to what we already know i'll remind everybody we were planning on a 160 million dollar referendum to be voted on would have been a couple weeks ago to replace all of the hvac systems in our school so this is not an issue that's new this is something that we are is on our radar it is something that we are going to do something about in fact tonight this board is going to discuss some things in executive session uh regarding um that referendum and certain contracts that go along with that so i'm not trying to minimize the staff's concern about ventilation i'm aware that it's a concern uh if anything we're going to bring in our architect to inspect all of our systems and make recommendations for now i'm encouraging all of our teachers to open up their classroom windows uh students need to wear a jacket absolutely welcome to they want to bring in a blanket let students bring in a blanket let them wear hats keep those windows open wear masks stay six feet apart and you will be safe as far as staff members quarantining the rule is very simple and if somebody who reports to me is not following this rule accurately then i need to know that the rule is if you go to a state voluntarily that is on the quarantine list when you come back to work you have to use your sick base if you're going to um [Music] i don't know florida for vacation the first week in november you're going to disney world when you come back we're not going to be upset with you we're going to make you quarantine them and we're gonna make use of sick days if however you are mandated to go somewhere or you have some other um very good reason to have to attend an out of state event then we are going to work with you on a case-by-case basis to make sure that you do not have to use your sick days there are there are things that you can qualify under the law to get leave time paid leave time uh for such activity so if you're not sure if there's a staff member out there who who has been given different guidance this came out from our human resources director and if it's if if somewhere in our district that's not being followed then i need to know about it simple email to me will get the issue fixed because i believe we are a compassionate administration i believe we are a compassionate school district and i believe that we care about our staff at least that's what i want to happen in this school district and if it's not i want to know about it let me address the issue that came up that that max reuben brought up our amazing student who i love max when max was talking about um students with masks i didn't hear and he'll correct me if i'm wrong please do max i didn't hear him saying that he saw a lot of kids not wearing masks i thought i heard him say that he heard that this was happening i will tell you this i spent about 45 minutes today walking around the building with mr doctor now you might say maybe it's because i'm walking down the high school with the principal and everybody's wearing their masks but i did not see one student not wearing a mask i saw that's not true i saw one student with a mask that was just covering their mouth and not their nose mr doctor simply said please fix your mask the student complied it wasn't an issue let me be clear if students or staff do not comply with our mask requirements during the school day when our kids are in session there will be consequences it's a health and safety issue that is extremely important and there absolutely will be consequences finally we've made it through the first few days of school without a positive student test or a teacher test however as i've been saying for the past couple weeks it's inevitable that that's going to happen at some point in time and uh and just tonight we learned of a teacher a staff member who tested positive in the district i'm not going to get into any details the the schools that need to be notified would be notified the parents that need to be notified will be notified um and here's what we do when we learn about a case whether it's a student or staff member we collaborate with the health department the health department gives us guidance and recommendations or sometimes gives us directions on what to do depending on the circumstance it may mean that nothing has to happen it may mean that one classroom may need to quarantine in a worst case scenario it may need may mean that a school would need to quarantine for 14 days and close for 14 days but under no circumstances should there be any panic we don't want people to panic we want people to trust the process know that the right people are being notified and that we're looking out for the health and safety of those individuals so it's going to happen we knew it was going to happen it happened today it's going to happen again next week most likely so please please respect the process please understand that we'll be very transparent and open about this um and notify the people who need to be notified about these issues uh and mr daley that's great news that you share with us tonight and i'm happy for you and your family and your grandson thank god for that that concludes my comments madam president thank you very much thank you dr arbitozi uh the next order of business is new business and dr albertosi i actually have uh i would like you to um present to the board about the new business with uh miss hallowa i know you just put your mouth thank you uh miss danny uh as as requested by our board president i did contact kathy hello today who was our new jersey school boards association um representative for our region uh to set up a a board retreat for ethics training right now that has been set up for december 3rd at 5 30 pm we have a regularly scheduled meeting already on that date so we'll have the training at 5 30 and our regular meeting will begin at 7 p.m madam chair yes uh i would like to bring this up for discussion with the board if we're having a new uh if we're having a training on december 3rd we will be having a new swearing in the next month i don't know what the legal ramifications are but could the new uh prospective board member attend that training as well they can take my spot so the the ethics training is going to be in public so i'm going to make a motion that we have can i make a question well i'm sorry what i was trying to say is that the ethics training is going to be in public so if the new whoever gets elected comes to the public meeting they'll hear it however this gutierrez i can't hear you because of the mask i'm sorry the public meeting the ethics training is going to be happening in public yes so whoever gets elected in november will be able to attend the meeting in public and and hear the training um i was just trying to address ms bashford's original question what i would suggest however is that once that person is seated you can always have another ethics training later on it's not very lengthy it's about an hour's worth of training and that's what we figured probably would be february or march maybe whatever works with school boards there'll be another ethics training okay sign with me questions well maybe an open uh invitation to the people that get elected and then this way they can come and participate in the audience thank you okay yeah i just have one quick question uh through you to dr albertosi um max rubin said that they were taking not only uh they were taking sat books for uh for the students i also have a bunch of nursing books that i would like to donate we'll will clifton high school be accepting them also because i have a ton of study uh i guess books and pamphlets and everything that i would like to to donate to the students yeah mr piscenti we'd be happy to accept that as a donation um if you could just tell me when they're accepting them i'll be more than happy to bring them over i'll get you that information mr smith you had a question yeah i'm just going back to this ethics training you know miss bassford brings up a very good point you know one month later why don't we just hold it off for one more month and then the new board member would be on and gary doesn't have to not that gary's going to come sit through it anyway but well mr smith it was i know but it was miss basford that requested it so i'm just filling up the request and then that's why i originally wanted to hold it till the new board member came on but we could have two it's fine so we'll all get it twice it'll be good we'll be very ethic minded any other question miss gutier is that a hand up or oh sorry oh sorry i was just leaning okay any other questions new business yes dr arbitosi i have a new business item for discussion on the on the board uh miss danny i did give the board a heads up about a week ago i emailed them that we have a school 16 requesting permission to hold a trunk or treat and they've submitted a plan i do have to say that you know on on the record um our initial response to these requests to to all the hsas was that no we weren't going to do that this year the elementary principles uh stand by that i support the elementary principles in their um wanting to deny that request for for safety reasons according to the the cdc it's considered one of those higher risk activities although i do commend the school 16 hsa for putting together what i believe is a is a very good plan that i shared with you it would still be for me i i don't know that it's the best idea to to have these types of events um at this time having said that i don't believe it's my call it's the the school 16 hsa has requested use of facilities permission from the board of education um if if the majority of this board wants to grant that request i certainly wouldn't block it so i'd like to hear some discussion on that and hear your thoughts please i have a question as of right now uh as of right now our school 16 they're they're doing um a b a b also right and there's ha and there's half of the half of the school participating in in person uh mr percenty they're actually doing at the elementary level they're actually doing four days a week with just wednesday virtual okay and how many how many are in those in that school is how is it half still or about so if they go into this um trunk or treat as they're saying it's possible the whole school could participate this is my problem here so that's a good question um my short answer would be i would say yes because the high school level um if you are a virtual student you're allowed to participate in athletics so i would imagine that same rule would apply to any virtual student to be allowed to participate in any type of extracurricular activity so i think potentially yes you can have the whole school there how many are in that whole school oh off the top of my head i want to say about 350.

vin did i do justice to that did that make sense anything you want to add he's speechless yeah yeah if a good thing i didn't ask him about ppe you covered it all the only thing that i would add um just round numbers so the board understands is the total salary cost for the administrators as a group they're 17 is 2 million 500 000 per year so the total cost impact of year one is an increase of 62 000 all in and that's before we reduce the increase medical which is yeah so that's 2 000 reduction yeah so the net is you know under 60 grand on that that first year so you can kind of get a sense of for the 17 of them um where that lies thanks tony yeah just for clarity on the the um the 403b the 401k equivalent it's a thousand dollars in year one and it'd be a thousand dollars in a year too or is it ramped up a thousand dollars no it's a thousand dollars in each of the years it's not it doesn't go one thousand two thousand right no no no it's not escalating it's flat okay correct so from a budgeting perspective there's no it's flat yeah yeah yeah all right thank you and that's not included in the percentage increases or anything that's not in there either so you don't get an additional percentage on that one thousand dollars every year it's flat yeah the percentage is just on their salary yes just on salary yeah yes faith um i may have misheard or um you said with that thousand dollars so it's an additional contribution of 1 000 what are they it's 1 000 on top of something we're already giving them right right now what are we giving them 5 000 right now okay so it's gonna be now six thousand what's the irs max on that bin do you know well yeah it's eighteen five or nineteen thousand but that includes employer employee contribution so employees can add to this on their own i think it's up to twenty percent there's more than twenty percent of it yeah it's a cap at a certain point it's well short of what the irs cap would be can we increase their contribution by 20 our contribution our contribution to their yes and they're in they're in the teachers pension at the state level right correct okay they're not relying on six thousand dollars a year no okay well just because we don't fund any of the teacher retirement plan that's right yeah it's funny yeah but that's right i don't think anybody else funds it either so it was a joke yeah okay yeah um yeah just uh to go back to that thousand is that is that sort of considered like in the corporate world like a company match on a 401k is that sort of no because the employee is not required to match that most of ours do you know but that's that's works out that they're not required but it's similar yeah absolutely like it's like the it's a it's a um public sector 401k basically so just look the 403 b maximum contribution is 19 500 this year and the irs does allow an additional 6 500 for the people who are close over 50 so it's 26 000.

janina do you have a better number for me school 16 numbers so we're under so with with all the parents and every all the helpers who are still under we still have a problem with 500 gathering which is another which is another issue i have with this uh whether correct or not school 16 is only um 217 194. no no no either last year's numbers were 217 this year we have 194. so somewhere in the middle there's something wrong with that yeah so anyway that's the numbers that are but i mean even february of last year was 217. so so i i understand mr percentage point is that 500 number in their in their plan [Music] to their to their credit the hsa there is going to do two sessions one from k to two and one from three to five to minimize ground so that would that would help okay so let me just read what what the plan says the events will take place in two sessions one k to two one three to five to minimize crowds if there are a large number of participants they will also be provided with a specific time slot to trick or treat all participants will be required to wear masks and will not be admitted without anyone attending the event must be pre-registered no walk-up guests will be permitted the event will be limited to school 16 students and their immediate family which is their household members only the hsa will provide all candy that is to be distributed and create goodie bag types of treats goodie bags will be assembled by hsa members while wearing gloves only adults will be permitted to distribute candy to trick-or-treaters and only candy provided by the hsa will be used adults will be reminded that at no time should they give out any candy other than what was provided adults distributing candy will be provided with gloves that must be worn therefore at no time will bare hands have touched any candy and at no time will children be allowed to put hands in candy bowls i have a question mr miss is are the candies are going to be giving out is it sealed packages how is that going to work the verbiage used is a goodie bag okay yes i believe that would have been sealed mr passante yeah just one more thing and dr harper told you you said the teachers were in in the administration principles i should say oh are against this correct yeah the elementary principles i i believe as a whole um are are are not are not for mr smith is your hand up or is okay and mr abdrabbo after yeah uh dr robitazi i would surely uh support uh what you think is best however um in saying that somebody one of the speakers in the beginning of the session tonight spoke about how our governor now is opening up uh indoor uh sports so i don't see how you have an outdoor event that you're not gonna allow but you're gonna allow an indoor event with potentially more issues not that i'm against the sports at all that's not what i'm saying i'm just trying to make the correlation but uh you know i would support what you feel would be best for the district as a whole are there that's i think mr pacentia just asked that are there any other applications for other tricky trays yeah so that's one of the concerns for this discussion tonight mr smith because pretty much um the elementary principles are and it came from me that we weren't going to do this and so i believe the hsas did not submit requests um due to to that rule that we were enforcing however because school 16 whether or not they got the message i'm not sure um sent a specific request to the board and to myself i wanted it to be at least discussed and considered and if the board does approve this tonight i believe we should allow any other hsas that want to do it a little leeway in getting us uh a permit request you know within the next week so i anticipate if we do approve this tonight you will have other schools um who will you know want to hold a trunk or treat and i think your point is well made about the the governor's executive order on monday to me was a big surprise that we're allowing now indoor sports we're allowing wrestling we're allowing basketball indoors and and i think and i i think it's it's more of a political pressure thing and i think we have to be careful of succumbing to political pressure i think we need to do what we think is right but we're also setting a precedent right what we approve now we'll have to approve again in the future and the more we open up those doors to what events we're going to approve um the more difficult it could get so i want our kids to have trunk or treats i want our kids to have a normal halloween i i am concerned about i am concerned about it though to be very honest with you but next month if we're having a basketball game indoors i don't know how we justify not allowing a trunk or treat it's a and so i get it it's do you want um dr robertosi do you want the board members to you know do you want to pull the board members yeah further the discussion if if if the majority of this board is is for approving this let's just do it and be done with it okay and the elementary pencils will probably be upset with me but okay that's the nature of my job mr abdrabbo the mr kanova thank you danny um mr sorry superintendent roberto is it inside or outside do they define it outside it's gonna be outside if we're going back i mean i see inside and outside but if we if we're gonna go back to normal uh or what whatever normal may be today and open up schools then uh listen i i i'm a school 16 parent so i went to the fundraiser and again i'm not on hsa and i got to talk to our attorney if i even can vote on this or not but um you know i went to the fundraiser they had an outstanding you know showing um and i don't know because i haven't heard of any any cases or anything within you know the exclusive king community so obviously they were able to contain it in any way um they put up a plan together um but that's my you know that's my two cents so i i don't know how i can go into this and discuss it but um [Music] i i i don't know i i think it's a fine idea no i'm not a mmh i'm a parent of school 16.

over 50 yes yes i didn't catch up contributions that's pretty young tradition right yeah fifty's not done all that young 50 is pretty young people in the room would agree yeah 50 is young question i i don't recall um that was came up during the discussions what as far as the all-in increase how's that compared to settlements in the state do we know is it um when we talked to floyd he considered this a favorable settlement for us the uh administrative group has met on this and has ratified this so the way it would work is um pending your approval it would go before the town council who could either take no action and then it's adopted i think after 30 days or they could vote on it their choice i was going to say unless there's another questions and we can talk about more during motion is there a motion yeah and did you want to make those yeah i would like to move that the cheshire board of education approves the collective bargaining agreement with the cheshire administrative personnel for the period of july 1st 2021 through june 30th 2024.

yeah um madam president can we recognize mrs kusalevich he wanted to speak earlier okay mr canova just um is it's really your call i don't believe that we need emotion on the floor i think you could just take a stroll pull doctor armitosia are you listening can you hear me i think joe has a question joe wants to talk another thing but yeah before we call the question the only other thing to add here is so i i i do agree i think that they should have be able to have a trick or treat and i and i'm someone that doesn't want to get things back to normal the only thing to consider here well first of all they're they're outside of our our district hsa is just like boys and girls club they're not it's not essentially that anything that happens that we would technically be responsible for is that correct so anybody anybody that rents any facilities from us we're always responsible in the end there's some responsibility i think that's okay yeah yeah i know i know so the way it the way i look at it we already have people that attend our our games our football games and et cetera which we're keeping 500 and under um so if we're only talking about 200 i don't know what the number is going to be but if there's if they're giving it up half and half i don't see the problem with it the only problem i do see and it's something we're going to have to deal with like you said when other schools submit is that this is late notice for any other school that want to do it one and two it's not so much for your your 16 year two your ccms richard wilson if for year 12 17 4 or 5 how are they going to do this and be socially distant in their small facility where they can host something outside so that's that's the only the other caveat here is some schools have space where others don't and you can't tell one yes and the other no so whatever happens here has to be uniform which is if they're going to use another school's area or something i don't know what we're going to do at this point in time and i love the school 16 hsa i love all they do for the children i just don't think i think i need to take my elementary principles recommendations that for this year we do not approve it maybe there's something that they can do the winter break and obviously it's not gonna be a trunk or treat but maybe by winter time uh there's something else we could do in the spring maybe we could start opening up a little more um but it just if all of my principals are telling me that it's not a good idea i got to go with what they're what they're telling me so if you ask my recommendation my recommendation is we say no but i'm just not sure i don't know that i have i believe it's a board decision um do you matter president to the superintendent or the business commissioner were there any issues with their fundraiser last month that they helped none that came to my attention so there and again i'm just asking just to inquire because i never really you know delved into what was the outcome very responsible parents i believe that they put together a really good plan i just think that approving this causes more issues um than it than it solves um and i think that at this time i really think that we should look at with the cdc guidelines say that this is a a medium to higher risk activity um even though our governor says we could have indoor sports i i know we're we're talking out of both sides of our mouth here i get it and i get the hypocrisy of it all but i just um i gotta go with what my principles are telling me mr daly yeah i kind of uh agree with joe here's the issue i would love for our students and and hsas to carry out these activities uh but what's good for one is also opens the door for others uh and even though they were out there in front school 16 and they may have have a very good plan you're going to have everybody else say well you let them have it why can't we have it and there's other factors as joe said this the schools are all different in terms of the area which they could do this in um so i think it presents more problems i do have a question on the liability i think our council uh touched on it um so being we have a very un you know it's it's i feel very unfortunate fortunate not to weigh in and say yes i'd love to say yes but it's it gets very complicated in a hurry here so um i'm leaning towards i don't think it's a good idea i would like to take the poll if we could gutier miss gutierrez yes thank you miss danny this is not something that's on a rep that's a resolution right mr dr robert it is not on the agenda no i but it also seems to me that this is not this is something that you can make a decision you can make the decision whether or not to approve this trunk or treat without the board if the decision is solely mine the the the answer i'm very sorry to the school 16 hsa i love you guys please don't be upset with me i'll make it up to you at some point in in in our lifetime but if the decision is solely mine the answer is no i just i was under the impression that the board grants the use of facilities not the superintendent and but if if you're telling me it's my decision my decision is now so do you well let me ask the question this way do you always bring hsa activities to use outside to the board yeah well in that case and you do put it to the board for the question okay yes use of use abilities discussion all right so i may i'll make the motion do we normally we don't make motions in new business correct i mean was that i was given it was given to us 48 hours prior so we can it was emailed to us a week ago okay and there are emergency exceptions too and it's an emergency action it right that needs to be done by october 30th so i'll make the motion to take the recommendation as superintendent motion by mr percent second by mr casper um and i guess you're making the motion to vote on um allowing the um i'm making a motion to go with the recommendation of superintendent to suspend all trunk or treats for the 20-20 year thank you mr presentee okay roll call no question yes mr smith yeah i just want to make sure uh there's nothing scheduled or requested in the middle schools or the high school for not trunk or treat but anything like that either right well i'm just going with trunk or treat that's fallout that's what my motion is and that's what was brought to the board at this point mr smith that's all i'm just asking if dr robitozzi are there other are there none that i'm aware of mr smith no halloween type activities that's fine okay another questions okay roll call okay so the resolute the motions um take dr robert tosi's recommendation of not allowing trump repeats um i'm going to support the superintendent's recommendation these things we have a process we have a bylaw and we have a policy that supports the facility usage form we just went through this last meeting but we also have to support the superintendent's recommendations because these things have to be more thought out and we can't make the decision on the fly so i support the yes to the superintendent it's beltran i would love to see this event happen i think everyone knows that i love events but um i understand that you know it can't happen right now and i hope that somehow we can figure out either allowing the students who are in class or even the ones at home on hybrid to encourage them to encourage them to dress up or you know something to bring a little bit of halloween spirit to it if they choose to yes mr mr casper yes mr pacenti yes mr smith yes miss danny yes motion carries is there any other new business thing on motion to go into exec okay i'd like to make a motion to go an executive to discuss contract matters motioned by mr prasanti second by mr casper um roll call mr abedrabo yeah madam chair hold on i hadn't made a request for something to be discussed in executive session is that a soul awesome agenda uh yes miss gutierrez can you um add to what will be in executive session contract matters attorney client privilege yes miss beltran yes mr canova yeah mr daley yes mr casper yes mr pacenti yes mr smith i miss danny yes and miss gutierrez no action will be taken uh we will adjourn from executive session correct that's correct yeah we take a breather we're going to need to go to a breakout room please yes we're just gonna stop the live stream and the recording because um you're closing from executive session all right

it's their second adam seconds any discussion i was i would say is been not directly involved in this negotiation it wasn't a teacher's uh negotiation however uh jeff and vincent gave me daily updates on this uh throughout the course of it i think overall it's very fair considering what's going on the economy i i asked about the settlements because i i know that there are some higher settlements um in our districts however it's kind of apple's oranges comparison i think jeff alluded to earlier our our salary schedule is is good you know it's not as competitive per se as other school districts i know that always comes up as a factor down the road so the fact that they're able to work with us but we also were able to get a lot of help on the cost share the insurance because it i think the i think this the current contract the first year was nine percent or so yeah it's in ten now yeah yeah yeah yeah it's but the fact that we're able to add on uh three percent three percent yeah it's going to help us quite a bit so i you know again it as with any negotiation i think when both parties walk away from the table feeling like they didn't get what they wanted it's probably a good deal um i think this is very fair uh especially in the so i will definitely be one in favor of it so uh i do want to thank the administration team uh for helping appreciate this any other comments questions seeing as there are none uh the motion on the table is move the cheshire boy education approves a collective bargaining agreement with the cheshire administrative personnel for the period of july 1st 2021 through june 30th 2024.

all those a favor it is unanimous thank you thank you [Music] i think i want to thank the cap yeah and i know that obviously they can't be here tonight but you know mike woods maureen reed um robin ann carey uh diana burns on their negotiating team and i really have to thank all of our administrators i mean this all of us are you know working way outside the norm these days and they've done a tremendous job for us i know they'd be appreciative of your show of support tonight so i i'm certainly more than comfortable passing that on on their behalf thank you up nexus planning committee uh andrew sure um well all of us were there it was the planning committee meeting of the whole it was held back on september 23rd 2020.

um the bulk of the meeting revolved around hummus in school and the board of education sorry and how the building would be used in the future um school modernization committee has been looking at all the schools and um humberson has been one of those ones that's been looked at kind of independently um the meeting basically revolved around mr maciana presented the annual maintenance cost for the school for the operation of the building which is about 85 000 per year with 48 000 occurring at thirty seven thousand dollars non-recurring expenses um without getting into all the details of the meeting because we were all there um basically what the board decided was is that hummison is seen as an important school building for both the alternative high school as well as the board of education offices today as we move forward with school modernization it's going to be looked at since it is a school building as part of the overall plan for the school modernization costs you know are not completely out of line with other operations for a building of that age and of that size there are significant renovations that would have to be done to bring it up to full code compliance so that's why it's gonna be looked at holistically with the overall redevelopment plan for the schools also at the meeting we talked about the district solar energy project uh we had met with ecg back in march of last year we have a per hour we have a 90 an hour contract with them to look at all the schools and different locations for the solar installations um we have not met with them since march and it's going to be i think at the next planning committee we're going to have ecg come in and represent representative david newman come in and give us a update as to where they are but today we haven't received any invoices from them so they're in a holding pattern and once we have more information on that we'll report back to the full board sounds good i actually heard you andrew that was good as a quick update i actually heard you i was going to say for board members just a reminder i know i think some uh when we had our first meeting here some of you coming home just asked us to talk closer to mike was like here's i think you're fine andrew but um we're on the huntston building so i know there's an update from essentially later but at the end of the day there is no emergency situation that requires the board to move out of that building anytime soon doing so would certainly add a lot more cost than we're paying today because of finding their space long story short it does have to be considered as part of overall planning where board of ed office and hummus to ultimately be i know the smc is is working on that so i'm glad to hear at least we got some details in that so thanks to the committee and vincent team for getting that information together much appreciated tim yeah uh just on the solar yeah on the solar project andrew i'm not sure if if you know this at this point but for the viewing public there is some time sensitivity to this from a funding perspective funding ramps down over the next 15 months or so and it would be a construction project which obviously would take you know some time it's not a one-day project do you have an idea of when we might the planning committee might meet again yeah i actually brought a calendar so i was hoping that we could get together for well not before we adjourn but before we leave just to pick a couple of dates that would work okay for everybody so probably this week or next week okay awesome yeah thank you great thanks for that moving on policy committee mr purple thank you mr chairman um so uh we had a policy meeting uh virtually on october 6th uh we discussed um three let's say one two sorry four policies uh one of which was uh we discussed uh to have a uh a policy rescinded which is the bring your own device uh policy that we currently have um forget the reasoning why if it's due to executive order or just our current state of affairs the policy being rescinded yes that was because we have everybody is a one-to-one now this was the um the one-to-one bring your own technology nobody brings their own technology anymore and that's due to uh we can better control security and absolutely yeah network security is much greater it's much easier for us to repair devices when it's all one device and things like that but yeah that or at least limited number of style of devices and things like that but huge network security issue right yeah and uh so the policy committee voted to rescind that policy and to bring it to the full board which we'll discuss a little later on um the other three policies are not policies in effect but just new policies that we were discussing the first one was about the termination of of employment and uh mr white wanted to bring that for discussion and that was about the termination of employees of cheshire public schools we had a an extensive conversation which can be referred to in our minutes here where we all came to the conclusion that we do not have enough information yet about a foia law about uh union uh hearing regulation and uh what is uh permissible to be be reported publicly uh we're gonna be referring to our attorney a board attorney for that and then when we have more information we plan to discuss this again in our november meeting once we have better information to better construct the policy if it's necessary um the second and third policies that we discussed uh were about uh bylaw time place a bylaw for uh time place notification uh and type of meetings uh for the electronic for for the board of education electronic boards electronic meetings for the board of education uh and also attendance at meetings via electronic communication um so uh most of these uh we discussed about you know how we're currently having virtual meetings for at least our our uh subcommittees and uh what what is the what does the law say about even having uh you know virtual meetings for for us going into the future uh it was determined that um any virtual meeting that we hold at this point is um only by decree by the governor's executive order when the executive orders if if the executive orders uh expire in february then we would no longer to note we would be in violation of foia and that we would have to uh continue to hold all meetings in person um as the law would state because so so for right now it's executive order only um but as you can see um in practice we are uh instituting some of that as you can see catherine uh hallan is is uh could not attend in person uh due to uh it was a work conflict i think you could bug out at any time i believe um for uh work commitment uh so she was able to attend virtually today um so that's something that we're allowed to do uh by um again governor decree um and uh so that we will continue to do so until we're not allowed to if a board member cannot attend in person um another one that we're looking into was uh not only attendance but voting virtually if one of us one of us could not be here um in person to vote would uh would could their vote be counted if they called in or attended like catherine is this evening um there is uh we do not have clarification on that yet if that's something that's legal or not but it's just something that we're looking into it's uh it's not clear for if we have a desire to even have that sort of uh situation right now um and so that's what we discussed and we adjourned at 725 which is a pretty quick for us that was only about an hour so uh sometimes we could go you know two three hours depending so just on clarifying them in the last part we're talking about voting uh remotely it's legal under the current executive order because we're going to flexibility do so but after it expires um it may not be i i know there is a board in this state that's had remote meetings even before covet i'll find out who they might have some information on how they're able to communicate before it's worth it if the board decides then in february that maybe it's a good thing to have more um remote meetings although my guess is the executive order probably extended a few more months back then so anyway any questions for adam on policy tim and faith thanks tony yeah i just wanted to add that on the topic on the policy topic of terminations after we had the discussion my view is that with regard to separation agreements and suspensions when people are actually leaving the school system for some time my preference would be to have that publicly noticed in some way whatever is foiable not anything that's private but if it is foiable it just should be the public should be aware of it or have relatively easy access to be aware of it for uh for what it's worth uh waterbury does that the board of ed they have their reasons and every school is a little different i'm not sure um why they do it but uh believe it or not michael gagne actually asked me about this very thing a few months ago i was wondering why we don't publish a list of who's leaving the school system like well that's really not something we i've seen anybody do but if there's any value i'm glad the policies can be taken out but there are absolutely union related issues related to that i i'm not quite certain um why watery did it but that might be a reference on this right and we had a lot of legal question marks about it so we uh you know we sent it back for some research and hopefully we'll have some answers in november to continue on um are there any other questions i'll go ahead and come back to the um bring your own device rescission i i guess i guess um we had the allow we allowed people to bring their own devices back in those halcyon days when you know protector was relatively new and the breaches were rare and now we're in um a whole new era but also because it would have been cheaper for the district i assume to have some kids bring theirs and is it and i'm not i'm i'm not asking about expenses or anything that's okay um practically speaking even before copenhagen how many was anyone still bringing their own device pretty limited yeah it was pretty limited the other thing is like is chromebooks became more readily available and we we built out a google platform the cost is really not it's negligible a chromebook even what's a because we buy in bulk obviously it's 75 and we do buy durable chromebooks so that they the breakage is minimized and we you know just then we repair them in-house so we typically buy parts by selling some of the old chromebooks off my parts put them in inventory and our own technology set prepares them so okay we should do it at a pretty modest price than only but to keep them running thanks um are there any other questions um seeing none mr chairman i'd like to make a motion please do so um moved at the cheshire board of education we send policy number 6141.328 bring your own device oh that's it and sick yeah yeah is there any discussion i wasn't sure if i got to kick it back to your life no okay is there any discussion on the motion seeing none call for a vote all in favor passes unanimously thank you mr gripper thank you and thank you to the policy committee for helping me at that point up next is a school monetization committee update sure thank you so we had our first school martial asia committee meeting in person at highland school on the 5th of october at 7 00 with our new chair jen bates and our co-chair chuck net coliers gave a presentation they have been looking at all of the district-wide school buildings and looking at different studies and reports and physical physical structures in person at the time of the meeting my loan and mcbroom's enrollment study had not been received yet that actually was delivered to us last night um i haven't had a chance to look at it but that will definitely be part of my next report and also the main focus of our next school modernization meeting which is going to be wednesday october 21st again at highland school at seven o'clock um enrollment study is a key component and it's going to definitely drive where we're going to be going with the different redevelopment scenarios a lot of the meeting revolved around renovation of existing buildings versus new construction cheshire's current renovation reimbursement rate by the state of connecticut is at 46 percent versus 36 for new construction the month of november is going to be really busy um a lot of the data that's going to be in the mylonamic room study is going to be looked at and it's going to help formulate a lot of the scenarios project schedules kind of still a little bit in flux we talked a lot about the different deliverables when we're going to be submitting to the town council of the different scenarios and when like public outreach is going to be done um but bottom line is is that we have to we have a drop dead date of submitting to the state of connecticut for with a project by june 30th of 2021 um which would mean that we'd have to get to the town council at some time in march in order for it to be forwarded to referendum or them to approve it to be forwarded to referendum depending on what the studies come back with um there's a lot of discussion that took place i'll try to keep this brief um one of the great things that's coming out of this is there's a community outreach and communication plan subcommittee that's being formed as can be chaired by mr rich gutzenberg i'm co-chaired by miss o'donnell and mr pangaro the purpose of this is to reach out with the different scenarios to the public to go visit different community groups and set up a website and really start pushing for whatever the first school construction initiative is going to be um they have asked school modernization committee has asked if the board of education as a whole could come to our next meeting which is going to be a highland school on october 21st at 7 pm in the cafeteria um so i don't know how that's handled but we would need to publicly notice that i would assume as a yeah absolutely thanks uh anderson i did uh cc carol and jeff on that you know if we have a quorum of the board members in the public we should notice that it won't be an official board meeting but just to you know make sure you don't violate it for you so yeah so um the democratization committee since it started certainly has the the long-term facility master study plan was done in 2016-17 and if you're only remembers that one called for starting a new middle school and there's a specific education specifications around that uh where the program would be in that school and i think the committee's still talking about you know buildings in general but it would be helpful not just from the board but from jeff and marlene and vincent as well as you know what we see the vision for what could be improved on schools now i believe a lot of our feedback will mimic what's already been heard by the committee in their walkthroughs enough space uh ventilation et cetera et cetera configurable desks and all that but i would just remind the board members look at the education spec for new middle school that was proposed because in there it listed out things like world language labs lab spaces common areas i think a lot of things that will build well in any school um so i think us giving them some feedback and i'll see our superintendent assist superintendents getting some feedback on the types of programming that we envision doing i think is going to help the committee narrow down you know a mountain of where do we start and with your own data so i just study that and again just bring your ideas to the table concerns and your opinions we told repeatedly that regardless of the last plan um you know all objects should be on the table the data that's being collected the study is being done my colleague has been alone should help drive a bunch of solutions but i think they're going to be uh served with um you know basically cps saying hey this is the kind of program we're trying to do we can't do today make it fit so um the only thing i would caution on is having everybody in highland you know seven board members let's just say 10 with administration plus they might want to try to do some kind of hybrid thing with i could talk to jen about that but yeah anna um will we be able to engage in a dialogue with the modernization committee yeah that's the whole point yeah okay that's yeah all right because yeah so i know in the past i've attended a meeting where it's like well you're on the board so you can't really say anything no they're inviting to come to get feedback from the board yeah um i think it's also important for all of us to attend because my lunatic room is going to be there presenting the demographic study for the first time so you could have back and forth questions with them as well would it be possible and i i guess i can ask john i'm not making you do my work but no the the study came out from malone last night you know smc has it be great to forward to the board before the meeting just so they have some questions like i'll ask jen and arnett about that it's okay it should be but i'll find out get give it to everybody ahead of time what does that mean next wednesday 21st i'm i'm sure we'll have more opportunities to talk with the members but so long as we i'm pretty sure as long as we notice that we're going to be there this is not a meeting of the whole anything like that but the fact that we're there we can actually have questions to answer without violating any issues with our foil laws so and it seems that you know things have taken a little bit of time to get to this point but now that a lot of this work has been done behind the scenes we kind of a slow summer unfortunately but now we're to the point where things are gonna start moving fast and getting to the town council and getting them to buy in to even put something up for referendum next november you know we're only talking a year from now where we're gonna actually have a project to vote on so i think we need to oh i'll be all hands on deck yeah is there anything you want to add or you guys think i would only add that i find your reports delightfully concise awesome thank you anne you usually have one thing to add so i guess i did my job this time so andrew that's at seven right yes thank you high on school cafeteria uh i'll ask i don't have to forward the meeting invite to all of us or wherever uh we do not have any understanding committees uh for those that might still be watching thank you we're on item f we're almost almost there item 5's approval of minutes in our board packets we have meeting minutes from the board of education meeting held september 17th are there any changes or addendums to those minutes i do not have any seeing as there is none i'll i have a motion to make move that the board of education approve the minutes from the meeting held september 17th 2020.

is there a second adam sergeant meet you see there's no discussion all those in favor it is unanimous thank you everyone all right item number six correspondence anything good i think that secretary madam secretary do we have any correspondence that means we have no correspondence thank you i missed doing that by the way subject to the covet emails thank you kev us finally super 10's report all right thank you very much mr paragini uh just before i hit on the um you know briefly on the the covid19 emails i want to highlight some events uh from this past week on october 9th this was you know bar none kind of the highlight of the last couple of weeks uh chs senior haley falk through her because of the brave foundation held a very special 100th birthday parade for not one but three world war ii veterans from cheshire uh ralph roland irv dauber and florence bryant uh after hearing from keynote speaker colonel kevin brown us army retired and others there was an escorted parade around all of our schools and students came out and waved u.s flags as the three well as the parade went by but really certainly acknowledging the 100th birthday for these very special individuals i just wanted to give them and of course haley a shout out for that tremendous work it was really cool and the embodiment of a community contributor one of our performance standards quick update on pps director as i've mentioned [Music] tracy hussey unfortunately leaving us on november 1st we wish her well we are in the process of uh interviewing now for that position and we hope to have an update for you soon i want to congratulate highland elementary school they have been identified as a special olympics unified champion school my understanding is they're the first elementary school in connecticut to be so named they're featured on the espn website and it's really pretty awesome stuff uh and great accomplishment for them on the heels of norton just being named a national blue ribbon school it's been a great couple of weeks for our schools and then a special shout out for our girls swim team the ciac had a special online competition to name the greatest connecticut sports dynasty of all time and um there were eight dynasties i'm sure some of you are familiar with like ansonia football and a special sweetening of the award we knocked off southington softball on our route to being named the top dynasty of all time beating danbury wrestling and immaculate girls soccer along the way to name that that title so nothing new girls swimming wins another title the last item i want to hit up upon is i shared with parents this week that we made a revision to our calendar by adding some early release time now you know some other districts have that readily embedded throughout the whole year and to be frank with you when this school year started it was venturing into the great unknown you know we were optimistic but there were certainly many people betting on us not making it two weeks three weeks you know here we are um closing in on 10 weeks now and things have been going pretty well in terms of our attendance that you heard maura we had three positive cases thus far that's that's better than most and it's allowed us to continue along the path that being said when we're teaching students that are in front of you and at home at the same time that takes a lot of unique collaboration that we've never had to do before and i think we were very well prepped out for the first like eight eight weeks of being able to do that but to sustain this um we need to provide some additional planning time if it's gonna continue to to be of good quality and that's really challenging uh i know as a parent thankfully my kids are old enough now that i don't have to worry about them being home alone um but i understand like it it does add a little bit of a scramble so we don't take this lightly we did do it on wednesday knowing that you know if you have an older sibling attending the high school maybe they could watch your child but we did add a day in november a day in december two in january one in february one in march one in april and two in may now that being said if things go really well and we are a hundred percent back in school then we will do away with these days we won't we won't have them we'll drop them from the schedule we'll be full in if things go terribly wrong uh fingers crossed but if we were full remote we would not have early release days built into that schedule so this would only be the case if we're on the like the current system where our staff are trying to teach kids at home and in front of them at the same time so i just wanted to make that clear for people and i think because i think there was a little bit of confusion when we initially sent it out and so i don't know if carroll sent it out today but to you know today or tomorrow we'll send out a clarification around that to make that clearer for people um in terms of the emails i you know mentioned we have a total of 12 now the the biggest concern i think that people are raising it's it's really only the high school and it's the hybrid schedule and it's particularly around freshmen so you know in some cases we'll hear with freshmen you know don't load it up too much on that day between it's overwhelming um others are like they need more work we uh realize that you know again this is extending out we're almost 10 weeks now and we've learned some things there's some good constructive feedback marlene will go through that with mary and faith in the team on monday about what is it we're doing and what is it we're shifting but in short as i said earlier we are moving to a more synchronous learning we have begun including more students who have more need based on their performance that we've identified we know we can't go to 100 in but we can go more than what we have now and so we're trying to be more inclusive we'll also be surveying students and parents to get uh better feedback about what we can do to improve the learning experience for that for all of our students so that's kind of where we are there was one specific question though to chs and vin touched on it a little bit but it was about tense at cheshire high um the weather has been incredibly cooperative we have people outside like marlene and i were talking about this earlier today i cannot ever remember a better fall like we didn't have scorching hot temps where you know we had to do it you know hopefully that's the one thing in 2020 that hasn't now it's good probably on a meteor tomorrow but the next week it's high 60s and sunny every day right now to try and put up a tent when we're gonna have to take it down because of the cold in a couple of weeks just doesn't make sense what we're what we have been doing at cheshire high school is during lunch we push people outside to eat as much as we can um and that's been pretty effective i don't anticipate us you know getting a tent for a two-week window at this point because we would have to take it down around early november uh so that's kind of where we are on the covid19 emails and as i said you know stay tuned for monday night much more information on thank you guys yeah inviting wrestle monday night there is a curtain committee meeting at 7 00 p.m uh it will be broadcast on youtube live uh and you know faith and team added the committee added these topics so i'm going to go more deep dive and clarify what's going on the schedule but i just want to add i got an email um this morning i didn't i didn't read the whole thing but so parents sent me an example and this might be i don't have all the details maybe on this extreme side but i think this the concern with earlier dismissal is less time in school and you talked about freshmen potentially there might be those that have need for more uh more work and those that have a good balance i think this might be the one that's on the need for more um sorry says for example my freshman got up at 9am because they had study hall first then london is for a second period for 10 minutes then was released he then logged into second class for today at 10 and was that go at 10 33 and he's done for today i don't have all the details in that situation who was that's obviously multiple teachers where can i direct this parent yeah there's four class meetings and two of them are study halls that's you know that's kind of atypical in our schedule uh for a student so that would be a little unique on that day that's that's definitely a a slow day so who can i point this person as a married as someone else yeah they're gonna be a discussion on multiple teachers first place to start is probably the child school counselor uh so if if and this is really helpful for us to know anyway if your child is struggling in a class the best person to reach out to is that teacher because they would want that feedback if if things aren't if you're concerned that there's not enough work or too much work or your child's not getting the work i would reach out to that teacher if as tony mentioned multiple classes i would reach out to the school counselor who can really help facilitate that much easier um they're there every day and can work with your teachers to to do that yeah i'll encourage that if i get more detail yeah i'll certainly share you know yeah thank you i'm sorry uh can i just clarify what jeff just said so it's just it's the school counselors who have more to do with the schedule not necessarily i wouldn't say necessarily just the schedule certainly they they work with the schedule but if there's a question or concern the school counselor is there to support any sort of academic questions or concerns that you may have you know how is this going to impact college um i'll tell you right now every durgby high school um with the exception of one that i know of is on a hybrid schedule the same sort of way we are um so that's it's pretty commonplace um and then definitely all the der gays were last i knew the last i checked so you know they can answer those but they can answer questions about if your child's having difficulty with the social emotional stuff or um if there's other concerns like uh eating or hygiene or just developmental things um the school counselor is a great place to turn for anything great thank you sure adam and andrew and then tim thank you um uh just you had mentioned synchronous learning uh because i know that um after a discussion of mora it seems like you know adding you know more in person right now is would not be advisable so for synchronous learning does that mean you will be uh you know i'll be watching on monday but i won't be able to ask a question i guess unless i email it and i suppose so i'll ask now um for synchronous learning does that mean you're going to be uh transitioning from that like uh uh let's say uh day a right or subject a is being taught in person and then the that class is home and then they right now if i'm understanding what's happening is that there's the people who are there in person are then home and then they could watch online for the people who were there on day two in person so that they can watch the same class over again it's almost like they're only learning the half half material so if it's synchronous that means that the people who are home can observe day a and then when they switch on on day day two that they could both then learn day b yeah together yeah and i did follow that yeah i did yeah so like basically the second day would be new material right new material and um you know i think it goes back to first of all you know we weren't teaching new material every day before covet you know we just you just don't teach new material every single day uh you know it could be reinforcing material things like uh you know group work it would typically happen you may introduce an idea or a concept day one and manipulate that sort of information day two and how do you make sense of it or you're doing something else the and i think one of the challenges here is not uniform so in it and that it shouldn't be necessarily so if i'm taking ap chem day one maybe uh new material day two maybe an extension of that day three may be an extension of that in my um art class day one could be replicated again on day two um and i think not having that you know everything is always the same for every class does make it a little bit more challenging for parents i think in some ways it's kind of what tim is talking about in terms of expectations but what we're transitioning to more of is day one you're teaching to this group live day two that half the class is home and the new class is in but on day one that class that was home was kind of was watching and we are like teaching synchronous synchronous meaning whether you're home or you're um at school everybody's participating at the same time half the class is virtually participating the other half is in person and every day it works that way that's got a lot of unique challenges to it um and so that's where you know we're talking about adding more days uh some some early release time to prep for that level of challenge uh it's it's much different than what our anybody any teacher is used to doing half and half right now but i think that for me that's sounds like that that's what we should be doing and that's what we're evolving toward yeah we didn't start that way um you know it was it was kind of all over the place based on what the content was with the class but it's evolving toward synchronous every day everybody's on logged on now keep in mind we're running block schedules so we're also a little you know you're concerned about like all right now my student is online they had three back-to-back classes that's 240 minutes of online classes you know that you know careful what you ask for right so like we need to understand like how do we build breaks in to that you it's really hard to sustain attention for 80 minutes watching something online you know so we're trying to that's why we're you know pushing a little bit more planning to make sure that that's meaningful time but yeah moving towards synchronous fantastic and now my second question is i thought i heard you say that there are study halls yeah we have study hope why are there study halls when we're trying to maximize what happens when the kids are in school right because we built the schedule with study halls in it and they're only like we only have enough staff to teach so many periods a day um in the the way when the schedule was built back in january we would have to add a slew of teachers to fill all those study hall periods to add more classes which you know logistically even if we wanted to right like even if you said here's uh four hundred thousand dollars go fill all those study halls with i couldn't hire the teachers just aren't out there um there's a real shortage right now because of cobit like people don't want to teach like people were tired out so when you constructed the the in-person time it was more more of a traditional it's the typical you know additional extension time period and those kids can get support a lot of times during that study hall period support is available to them we want more kids to access that support they don't always do so um and we're trying to push that more um and frankly trying to look at how do we bring the support to them you know they'll bring them out into muhammad routine okay thank you so there's a lot of unhappy parents in town um that i've spoken to several either you know at family functions or at the coffee shop and i was approached by a mom who came up to me and she said to me that her child is at cheshire high school they have 10 hours of in classroom instruction in the entire week is that possible like there's only 10 hours like this student goes to school only gets 10 hours of in classroom instruction for our entire week yeah it depends on the week and this is again this is the same situation that every school you know almost every high school in connecticut the larger high schools are in because when you have half the kids only attending um for the week so the the other option is to go um i mean i could tell you my my own son high school student attends half day twice or three times a week so he you know i would consider that situation worse um so it is a real conundrum what we're trying to provide through moving to more synchronous instruction is if covid is preventing me from adding you into the room physically then how do we make sure that the instruction is synchronous to be able to provide at least remote instruction to ramp up that 10 hours of engagement to the full engagement you know the 30 hours that you would typically when is that gonna start we've already started that in a lot of places in a lot of cases a lot of classes i don't have a list of of every class that is doing that but i know that you know marlene and mary have been looking at that too i know you want you know in the perfect world oh yeah of course absolutely our teachers desperately want that we want that our parents our kids want it our kid i coach a hockey team like 12 cheshire kids our kids going to school and they're getting 10 hours of instruction a week that's not cool no yeah i wouldn't say it's room instruction in classroom then they have wednesday that's not going to school you know that's right well you know again that's what everybody else in connecticut is living with right now too um it it's it's not a good thing um and so what we've tried to do is you know tim and i were talking last night with the personnel committee meeting you know it's like a college experience when you go to school monday wednesday friday the idea isn't that you don't do anything between monday and wednesday's class the professor has that expectation you've read chapter three you're coming back wednesday ready to discuss it the same sort of expectations are being set out here you know developmentally our kids are in different places some handle that well others don't so we try you know we're looking at those that aren't handling that well and how do we get them in every day for we are in the process of ramping numbers up we have pulled kids back to it every day um but yeah i mean this is a really bad situation but i'll go back to the fact that our kids went into this ahead of the game ahead of their peers and across the state and all of their peers are experiencing the same thing the numbers of high schoolers that are receiving more instructional minutes than we are is minuscule it may be a xavier where it's a private school and they they go every day you know but there are very limited situations where that's the case and i gotta imagine because connecticut is moving up it's it may be worse before it gets better and that's it's a hard pill to swallow is an educator as a parent it's a hard pill for me to swallow tim yes thanks tony so thank you for your thought sharing your thoughts there regardless of whether we move to synchronous get there a hundred percent learn hybrid remote in person i i think i like the idea of having some sort of guide for parents just an idea of where their kids should be this is take covet out of it i think that would be a useful tool is that something that you could do to give parents throughout the year you know like and and if that's not an if it's something you could do and it's not an easy lift you know what what's the hurdles to it because this is something i feel strongly about like i would love to see parents get something in hand where should their kids be in week seven in the high school freshman year geometry yeah next week like and i'm not saying that you could do it but but what are the hurdles to doing it yeah i i would say that's really challenging um as things are are so volatile um but i'll let you know i know marlene wants to jump in on this but i think we are in some respects building the plane as we fly it sure and we're trying to nail down all right well in the summer we're marking out quarter one what are the key uh instructional elements that we need to cover the the key standards to keep us moving ahead now we're jumping ahead to quarter two and i appreciate you suggesting that we you know even could potentially chunk it because i'll tell you right now for the full year we i i wouldn't want to devote the time it would take to do that because it would take away from planning for instruction in the here and now but marlene if you want to add on to that no sure i guess what i think of when i think of giving parents some information about where their kids are i think about parent conferences so we had an eight percent increase in attendance at parent conferences at the high school this year over previous years i think about progress reports i think about report cards i think about power school and how parents can go into power school and they could see are there students missing any assignments how did they do on quizzes how did they do on tests so i think about all those things and i think about the fact that any of our teachers are available if you wanted to have a parent conference and it wasn't the month that we do parent conferences our teachers all have internal pacing guides that we plan and we write as we write our curriculum now those obviously due to our new strategies during covid and addressing instruction are changing and so they're constantly tweaking those but those are extreme to the detail level of all of the content that needs to be reached and really i don't think would do the job for the parent who who you know was looking at that but just all of those other tools i think are really helpful to parents to know is my kid on is my kid on track or even an email to my to the kids teacher to say is my kid on track yeah it's i guess the thing is too is it's not just about saying is my kid on track but you know relative to last year because yeah so you know uh i'm trying to think of what it what a good example would be but it's we already missed out frankly on a couple months last year um so there were eighth graders who took algebra one and what's going to happen to them next year now that's next year it's down the road but how do they start algebra 2 right not geometry and and and parents i think want to have some have a little bit more understanding of of how this works and that internal pacing guide it probably isn't way too much detail for any parents but just you know going back to geometry or italian freshman year classes when we you know where would we normally be in week six where are we now yeah and and so i would and and i'll say this what you just said i recognized all those words that you use the power school and everything else but it's uh there's a lot of different things out there different ways to try to tackle that um and i think we use you know all of those and those are all communication tools to make sure parents know where their children are and what you referred to about learning loss is what i've been talking about this year and what we provided professional development on and what we utilized for learning and research over the summer was what i what i spoke about being acceleration as a strategy to mitigate learning loss and how that's something that all of our teachers are are utilizing and working with and and providing to students because yeah they took algebra 1 last year and they have to be ready for geometry this year so how do we do that how do we make sure that the kids are ready well one of those tools is this this strategy of acceleration so you know we have those things covered and then on the back side we have those pacing guides covered and we have what jeff was talking about um you know identifying those priority standards and making sure the kids are getting exactly what they need as we move through and i think you'll see at the curriculum committee meeting also and this might put some fears to rest some of the preliminary data that we have on at least our elementary students reading is commensurate with what we had last year and we started school much later this year than we did last year so it's it's a struggle that's fake thank you you're welcome i just wanted to say that i think one of the concerns there are a couple points um one of the concerns that parents have is just a sense of inconsistency how is it that a teacher one teacher can use the full lady minutes with their students and yet another one dismisses them after three minutes you know there's just where's the accountability and where's the the consistency and um and i've been hearing that quite a bit from parents you know there's just some seem to relish the whole period and use it to their best advantage and others just like okay you're done go um and that's to hear that is kind of disconcerting um so you know i think it's something that you might want to explore um you mentioned the study hall you know what do parents fully understand how that study hall is to be used i don't you know is there room for more communication than that uh with the parents i don't again i don't i don't have a senior i don't have a high schooler um so i don't know what communication is going back between between you and parents but um there seems to be confusion there um and you know i've heard okay the college experience that's great if you're a senior and they're in kids taking seniors taking college courses you know i know when i was in high school i did and and so you know you're learning but for a freshman who a year ago was in dog you know that's that's a lot to put on a 14 or 15 year old so just some comments and then the other thing i heard is okay connecticut schools may be in this position but there are a lot of states that are open and there are kids who are going to be going to out of state schools and so the comp the field competition is much broader than just connecticut and they're looking at that saying you know how is how's my kid going to rate compared to um you know i don't know where are they i know there are but i can't do one off the top um so you know those are just i throw this out because that's what i have heard and um just for you i'm sure you have as well but sure adam uh just one more comment um another thing that maura impressed upon me was that it appears that we're going to be in this situation until we have a vaccine all reports currently say that we realistically we may not have a vaccine until this school year is over which means that i would at least for monday i would like to hear at least what the plan is at least going through january if not longer and i guess maybe the real question is have we really just been planning to go full remote because it seems like sync because synchronous is is is is a lot more difficult than perhaps going fully remote um because at least everyone's all in the same place i guess yeah and so i'm just easier full in person is easier right hybrid is the hardest right to to do um and so yeah we are doing that and and i think that we we have been already planning for a more extended stay in the place that we're currently in you know nobody in august you can't tell me people had a clue about what october would look like oh sure so you know it is very much all of us are still flying by the seat of our pants um and trying to just kind of go one day at a time we are planning out you know as i mentioned uh before how do we evolve to better meet our our students needs you know to hear 10 hours in a week i mean that that would only happen if on an oddball week like this week where you had monday was a holiday and one day was psat you know at the very least a student's going to be in school two days 12 hours or three days 18 hours um and then one of those day wednesday would be full um for remote so i mean actually 12 would be the minimum every week um so you know we do need to continue to evolve we do need to improve that's why you don't hear boo from k-8 because we're all in i mean we do have 15 remote learners but we have a lot of practice in making that work now well yeah and and that's that leads me to my next point as the cases increase right and we may have to go hybrid at all levels right what does that look like are we going to need because right now it is just a high school if middle school and elementary school have to go hybrid so that we could maintain that for a while are we going to need more resources to achieve that are we ready for that for the entire system to go hybrid yeah we are and i i think what we have been doing in k through 8 you have that 15 remote um and so we are kind of teaching a little bit of a hybrid model there now we just have more kids in the room we're doing it's a little easier because you have more but the training wheels are already there at the high school it's not so much the case because you have 50 out it's a little bit tougher well it is in my impression that if you're a remote learner like at the elementary level that's five days a week you're remote yeah right right that's not a day there's no days off right and like no days in there's no it's not like you're mixing things up as much as you are at the high school it is it's definitely harder right you know from a teaching perspective it's a totally unique animal and but the there there are foundations of that that have been established k-8 that we could translate easier when we do make that transition um where now we've only done this at the high school it's a little bit different right so so could i get something to what jeff is talking about because i wanted to visit chapman school the first week of full classes and they are doing that they're doing they have remote students in the same classroom synchronously with students in the classroom not every classroom is being taught that way but diana really impressed upon me that the the one the teachers that are doing that are now developing a mentoring plan to um pass that excuse me information along to the teachers who aren't doing it who have just in um class students because it just gives us more flexibility but along with that also comes the technology has to be in the classrooms to be able to do that as well and that's been the plan since the summer when we started um implementing that technology in the classes but it's not every it's not in every class no what a 300 classes 36 i think you yeah we had um 60 rooms basically from the get-go and we're in the process of adding some more not trying to be the dead horse but uh just got an email in front of parents saying that scenario i bought earlier with the study halls uh no the um ten minutes class a day is um they believe is happening broadly throughout multiple grades however both of this person's kids have two study halls out of four classes in a day so i mean that's a rare bird to have two study halls you know four period windows i know but it's it's apparently it happens so yeah you know the challenge i have is i understand it's rare yeah parents of tolemance happening um we gotta fix it and so i'm going to advise and talk to the guidance counselor yeah we'll bring up monday night my guess is they're probably not going to get you or the guidance counselor so what is the step after that if they can't make progress with this you talk to the principal now if you know we're probably not going to change your schedule to not have two study halls in a day right now it would probably because you were a quarter of the way through it would most likely change if there's going to got to be a change made half here but usually study halls are opposite labs like science labs yeah all the details yeah but you know it's i'm hopeful i think whatever marlene's gonna present mine that we're gonna record and just kind of play back loop live on youtube like yeah 24 7. just to educate parents would it help if i just did a brief overview of what each day looks like for this group uh you know or do you might not want to go i would say we're starting around a little late okay i i know it's gonna be covered monday i'll be watching we'll be watching but thank you marlene and tim i know you had something yeah i just i just wanted to highlight it sounded to me a few minutes ago like we were talking about the elementary hybrid being maybe a learning model or teaching model for the high school hybrid or they're similar and i'm thinking these two hybrids are totally different hybrids they are yeah i mean elementary is linear throughout the week five lessons that move forward yeah and the concern i think a lot of parents have is that it's not that way with the high school hybrid it's lesson a on day one and on day two and then you move forward to lesson b yeah and that's why we've been moving more toward a synchronous yeah a b c d instead of a a b b c okay thank you so yeah monday and let me just clarify that wednesday is is a full remote day and there are all six classes on wednesday 30 minutes of pizza all six i'll just i'll say that and i'll save the rest for a moment your teaser for monday that's easier thank you marlene um up next is uh without any old business news business very quickly i i did send the board uh my notes i about three weeks ago three and a half yeah three and a half weeks ago um i had a zoom call with siparja aru and marisa from the cheshire coalition on equity and diversity remember we received their emails over the summer looking for systematic changes et cetera so i i reached out to them just you know as with all electronic communications whether it's social media or emails it's it's hard to gauge you know i have more questions i want to ask and you know rather than waiting for us to schedule a meeting uh so i reached out to him and and i'll tell you three were great um if i think i think marissa if not mistaken is getting her master's in education so she was very very well-versed um state-of-the-art education and trends and things and so i walked them through basically what the board does what the committees do some of the things that we're up against with curriculum and you know so it was a lot of great information they're learning about the process but for me uh you know it was a great dialogue like what i walked away with was we're not really far apart at all on where we are what we're trying to do in our future plan as it relates to diversity and equity and anti-racism and i think the more we taught the more we learned about some things we didn't know about uh i think the most recent graduate was from 2015 and i know a lot's changed and there's always areas for improvement on these topics but long story short it was great because i asked them you know given this mountain you're moving you know what are the top three things you want us to get done and they were able to actually able to condense that in three goals which we all have uh i know marlene's you know not on her head you know again so so what i advised him was you know boards are eager to hear more ideas from them they're eager to get in front of the board and just you know share some some information but they're very much interested in hearing about the circ presentation so definitely invite them to at least watch that because that's going to help us tailor a number of things but particularly we tackle some of these opportunities and then yeah i told them that you know get a week or two after digest information maybe we can have some kind of form with the group with the board of ed because i know a lot of us have questions for them and uh so we'll try to schedule it out you know soon the the challenge has been as you all know covid opening of schools um they're very understanding of that but yeah again i again i thought they were great the three of them very professional in fact i was telling marissa you know she should apply for a job in the school district i mean she seemed very passionate very you know uh versed especially in education in a room and surprise you were um you know to the point it was it was great i think we'll have a great conversation with the group um but it was very positive uplifting for me you know their intentions what they're trying to do it's it's great to see our alumni be proactive so um that's what that that was it i don't spend so much time with that so we are working towards um some of those things uh beyond that uh i don't think we've thought about the negotiations uh because we had mediation after last meeting yeah that you know we can discuss so executive session i am going to have a uh a motion to go to executive session with no action to follow but just a few updates on upcoming meetings uh monday october 19th at 7 pm is current committee meeting uh it will be via youtube live uh tuesday november 3rd at 6 30 pm is policy committee uh we do have an elementary school showcase on the books for thursday november 5th 7 30 that will be determined uh then we have curriculum committee november 9th at 7 pm and a boardwalk business meeting on november 19th at 7 30 p.m um it wasn't on the agenda but i know tim's raised and a few others considering for the next board meeting have it via google google me virtual uh just to break the rhythm a little bit i think it hey number one i gotta tell you i keep pulling on my massive talk because i feel like i'm no one's hearing me and i think it's hard people tell me that i i uh i bray a lot i i'm sure i have my video sequences when i'm in front of the mic but having this time doesn't help and they have i guess some folks have a hard time hearing us and the question is well if you're gonna get a room of mass what's the point okay let's do a virtual one next time we'll pull the board members you know we'll do whatever makes sense for the group but uh i think it'd be break it up a little bit i think our administrators here and carol obviously spent a lot of time at the schools as it is they have a little flexibility that i mean to be at home when this is happening we have our next scheduled meeting is our elementary showcase meeting so we'll send out some information on that and you know we can decide if we want to do that one remote or in person or the next one yeah i think the border by business meeting yeah the one thing november the remainder of both based on what we're planning yeah our plan was to show the um the synchronous rooms that we're using one of the high schools well so that's different there's action we're actually walking around and yeah you know i guess people are tired of seeing us yeah yeah but nonetheless the point is we're flexible so yep um that being said i do have a motion that the board of ed tony before you do that can you ask one question no yes um in regards to meeting uh with the uh with the i forget the name of the group no not special coalition cheshire coalition um i know that we're under restriction for uh 25 people uh and i know that they've sort of paired their their representation group to us to three people uh if they wanted to meet with us if we wanted to have a special meeting or something like that could we just invite them in person so that we could have a dialogue like that or none of them live here okay yeah so so remember these are you know they're not cheshire residents uh well they weren't anything there's three that i taught to know there's actually one is not in connecticut two are around so it more likely be virtual i i don't i but this group they're are they cheshire residents or not yeah not all of them okay yeah just one they came through our school system but now we're not they used to be but not anymore right right okay well out of the 750 that signed a petition i couldn't tell you how many cheshire residents but the folks i talked to are alumni of cheshire schools so they even said hey you know we'll do our best to attend i'm pretty sure it'll be these three it might be a couple others that might jump in to represent the group because it's a large group uh but we could work that out i mean i preferably like to have a personal you got that dialogue but we should do that via google me too as well you know but that's a good point we're gonna work out those details our next few weeks i do have a motion that the board adjourns in the possible executive sessions session to discuss unit negotiation with no action to follow and is to include vincent manciana marlene and jeff sullen faith seconds all in favor aye we are joining executive session uh we will not be coming back there will be no follow-up meeting ontario and watching this evening thank you uh thank you for your patience i know there's a lot of information as always uh if you couldn't follow everything please watch the video and as always send us questions and we'll get back to you as soon as we can that being said we are now going to executive session mike let us know and we can start that you

ihsaa once again my name is Josh Bernett I'm the bcsc communications coordinator and we are proud to present the ihsaa sectional 14 semi-final match between Columbus North and Martinsville High School the north bulldogs and Martinsville artisians have already met up once this season with the Arians getting the upper hand with a three sets to one Victory but anything can happen in sectionals as I said this is the semifinal match between Martinsville and Columbus North the winner of this match will face the winner of the next matchup between Columbus East Olympians and Bloomington North cougars that matchup will also be streamed on our bcsc YouTube channel but it is a different stream and as we saw the other night uh with Columbus East in game number two or match number two um it was a little bit later than we originally anticipated so uh please be patient with us because we'll be going from one stream to the other but hopefully uh for those of you who maybe tune in later uh you'll be able to check out this first matchup between Columbus North and Martinsville Martinsville is coached by Kayla back and Columbus North is coached by former Bulldog Quinn Schultz as I watched this uh Columbus North Bulldogs team warm up just a few uh keys to the match tonight based on last rounds uh mat match when Columbus North faced off against East Central a very important player to watch for the Bulldogs has got to be number 13 Sarah Bennett a 511 junior middle hitter anytime that she gets the ball and she has a chance to put it away uh you know North certainly has a chance to beat anyone one of the things though that we saw and and then we saw um we heard from assistant coach of Columbus East Terry Sweezy a couple different times the north Bulldogs rather than rely on that power they got into a little bit of uh some soft hitting and some you know some soft touches Around the Net and and during those times it allowed the other team to get back in it I would hope to see Sarah Bennett just continue to crush the ball as she just did right there on this warm-up session another great hitter is number 24 senior Madison white uh she was really strong on the right side died last time coming across the net and and anytime that um you know we see white at the net blocking she's got a real good chance to put the ball away and as you see the Bulldogs warm up just once again you know I just saw uh Sarah Bennett and Madison white uh making their presence known up at the net as far as on defense number 25 Ava McKenna is just a solid labero for the Bulldogs and she's going to be a key to returning the serves and really setting the tone for each point for the dogs we're going to go ahead and take a quick break and say thank you to our local sponsors who have made live streaming possible for us during this uh fall Sports season originally you know our hopes were to be able to stream on Friday nights uh at the football matches and then football game excuse me and then the Columbus North Columbus East cross town rivalry games in soccer and volleyball um but thankfully we've been able to extend that to the sectional season here we will be continuing to uh live stream the sectional at Columbus North and football uh but for right now we're really enjoying live streaming volleyball here at the orange pit at Columbus East so let's say a special thanks to our sponsors and we'll be right back with you [Music] [Applause] [Music] and we're back back at the orange pit just a few seconds left before we'll start today's semifinal match between Columbus North and Martinsville I am driving solo today as for the last few matches I've had Paul schnip the local volleyball Guru extraordinaire as I call him a former volleyball player at Purdue but tonight I'm going to be by myself so forgive me if uh I'm not able to move the camera uh speak and do the scoreboard all at once so we might have a little bit of lag at times but we will do our best to give you the best um production possible so that you can enjoy this volleyball sectional we're going to go ahead and let the in-house announcer Dennis Pierce speak for a little bit here hopefully you can hear him and we'll we'll be back with you in just a second number Katie th number n Gracie ridd number 10 McKenzie Martin number 12 deing Carter and number 17 Ella Whitney your head coach for your Arians cayb black once again that is your Martinville Arians and now for team the Columbus North Bulldogs number 13 Sarah Bennett number 16 rean Kane number 17 Sydney Cooper Number 20 Grace Chapman number 21 Maddie Ru number 24 Madison white and Le number 25 AA mckenny your head coach for your Bulldogs Quinn schz and that is your Columbus North bulldogs and Now ladies and gentlemen at this time we ask that you please stay of this game is made possible by those who have fought and continue to fight for the freedoms that we enjoy let us honor and respect their efforts in our country by gentlemen removing their Cs and everyone standing in attention placing their hands over their hearts as we proudly play our national anthem for if you're ready let's get ready to play some seal volleyball all right we are ready to start this we are ready to start the semifinal matchup between the Martinsville artisians and the Columbus North Bulldogs e and it looks like the artisians will be first to serve with number nine Grace Reynolds and let's get this sectional started Matty Rook right on the line and a great start for the Bulldogs Logan Brader in for the balog and a good serve to start out for the Bulldogs Matty rup again with another great hit and a little bit low for McKenzie Martin of Martinsville and the Bulldogs will take a an early two to nothing lead and a very nice Rally from the Bulldogs to keep that in play and it's very clear that early on McKenzie Martin is going to be a factor for Martinville after a little bit low on the the last one she's able to get a great kill on that left front side and she follows it up with a a very nice serve that gets the Bulldogs out of position served by Martinsville good return from the Bulldogs short hit from noo let's see what the Bulldogs can do Matty R and again number 10 for Martin Ville McKenzie Martin Martin with the serve good hit on the right side from Madison white oh good deflection from Reagan Kane but unfortunately mckenny not able to to get to that and the bulldog show some discipline there letting the Martin serve go out of bounds Matty rot to serve for the Bulldogs oh unfortunately North also hits a serve out of bounds 5-3 to Martinsville with the labero number one Molly Urban to serve for Martinsville good return from McKenna and Madison white great hit from the senior number 24 Madison white and quickly she comes out and Sarah Bennett is back in look for Sarah Bennett to make her PR presence known up at the net served by McKenna and the Lefty for Martinsville McKenna with a good oh and bretter able to get it over for the Bulldogs and a very nice crosscourt shot from Martinsville good return from rup back set from the Bulldogs and very nice Matty rup set oh and the touch from Sarah Bennett oh and a very nice hit once again from number 10 McKenzie Martin and early on Martinsville continuing to use Martin for her left side hits good return for Matty rup back set once again oh and just a little bit barely out of bounds but that point is going to go to to Martinsville good Lefty serve and there we go Sarah Bennett getting involved very nice kill from the junior number 20 Grace Chapman coming in from the Bulldogs and she'll go back to the service line good serve from Chapman so far seen some very nice back back sets from both teams this time Martinsville getting the point number seven ktie hang in to serve for the artisians good hit from the Bulldogs Matty rup with the set very nice dig from McKenna Matty roer turns it over once again again to the artisians oh the artisians able to catch the Bulldogs off guard and they are the first to 10 currently a 10 to five score artisians over the Bulldogs good return from McKenna Matty Ru mckenny set to Bennett again I'd like to see her just smash that cuz she's got unmatched power and Martinsville up early the Bulldogs take a timeout we're going to go ahead and take a break for just a second and say thank you to one of our sponsors legendary point guard from the Columbus North Bulldogs back in the day he is a head of ruof mortgage here locally and say I want to say a special thank you to Kevin Johnson AKA KJ for his office being the title sponsor of the fall Sports here at bcsc well that's an out serve from Martinsville so Columbus North gets the ball back and number 17 Sydney Cooper to serve for the dogs serves back to the libero and a very nice hit on the left side once again from Martin Ella Whitney back to serve for the artisians Matty R good return from McKenna sets the Bennett and early on Martinsville is just been really playing solid volleyball good service in return and they've really been controlling the sets that have allowed them to get the ball to their power players Bennett gets the ball back over point to the artisians 14-6 and another out serve a little bit unusual for the amount of um out ball so far on the serve serve from Sarah Bennett and she gets the point Bennett once again oh unfortunately a short serve into the net back to the artisians good low serve but the Bulldogs able to keep it going and another great shot from Martin early on definitely the player of the the first set has got to be McKenzie [Music] Martin Short serve unable to be returned from the Bulldogs and it's 17 to8 artisians another very good serve from Martinsville and this time Madison white able to block it from [Music] Martin but they go back to her and this time able to get the point Martinville back to serve oh definitely want to give credit to Martinsville for controlling the uh serve and return but the Bulldogs seem a little bit out of sorts so far in this set number one so hopefully they'll there we go maybe that's what they need to get going very nice smash from Matty R 19 to9 and Reagan Kane the setter back to serve for the Bulldogs solid serve I really thought that was a little back but obviously the the line judge has a better view than I do and very nice hit from the Lefty and with that the artisians are the first to 20 points Martin back to serve see what the Bulldogs can do with the cane set oh net violation on Martinsville originally thought that might have been called on the Bulldogs but 20 to 10 Bulldogs now in double figures with Matty rot back to serve and it's just out I want to say that's four or five out services so far both teams I'm sure would like to improve that the labero back to serf for Martinsville short set good return from and a very nice shot from Madison Wyatt ah Martinsville once again like to see a little bit more energy ah and a net violation called on the Bulldogs this game has gone pretty quickly with not many points or excuse me not many uh not many points going more than six or seven hits set point here in set number one for Martinsville the libero to serve good return from McKenna set from Reagan Kane Matty rup comes from the back row good hit very nice hit from the dogs but good return once again good set Madison Wyatt but a great block from the artisians and that is set number one for this sectional semifinal at Columbus East the orange pit well we're going to go ahead and take a quick break and say thanks once again to another sponsor this time from our scoreboard sponsor Ovation Technology Group if you grew up in Columbus you grew up with Ovation audio video the Ovation Technology Group is much more the local leader in local IT solutions 25 years of keeping companies connected and running efficiently networks and managed Services phone systems and Temperature Control Data security and HD thermal imaging grow smart with Ovation Technology Group at ovation.com ovation.com a proud sponsor of Columbus High School sports and we're back here at the orange pit and set number one is over with Martinsville taking that 25-1 a very dominant set for the artisians the Bulldog's really unable to get any momentum going and I know that a key to this second set in order to get uh back on the board and be able to maybe take a set back and even this at one all the dogs really need to get Sarah Bennett involved maybe because of the rotations and the way that they are but I can only remember one kill from her and then I know that she served once but unfortunately I think that ended with one going into the net the junior really is the kind of the emotional leader of the team bringing a lot of energy and you know when she's smashing the ball you can see everyone really get into the match and it it really gets the crowd pumped up and I noticed that in that uh sectional first round against East Central she really set the tone for the Bulldogs you know we continue to see some good play and you know senior Matty rup is involved almost on every play in some way as well as the solid labero AA McKenna looks like we got about 30 seconds between the next set really got some nice support from both teams but due to covid-19 restrictions things are spread out the uh covid-19 capacity is 250 for everyone here in this entire gymnasium which is much different than a normal sectional semifinal well with set number two underway good rally on point number one and yeah and while the artisians thought that was out of bounds someone at the net tipped that Madison white Spike back to serve Reagan Kane oh and a very nice play from the setter of Martinsville twice that has happened now hopefully the Bulldogs can make the adjustment oh and number 27 Logan bretter gets the point for the Bulldogs number 23 Paige Osborne in for Columbus North with Matty rot back to serve and an Ace from the senior very nice serve from number 21 good dig the set to Madison white I felt like once again yep that was tipped by the Martinsville artisians it's hard to see those things as you're trying to follow the action and you start to see the crowd react act and they think it's out but it actually tips someone at the net so Columbus North takes the lead 4 to one oh and the artisians able to get back on the board and Martin back to surf for Martinsville oh no little bit of miscommunication there it looked like bretter and Kane ran into each other four to three Martin to serve oh McKenna unable to come up with the one arm stab and it's it's a tie game in set number two 44 Martin to serve and knew that one right away was out of bounds Martin definitely hits the ball very well but that just had a little bit too much pace and once again that's kind of been the story of of this match a lot of I think there's been six serves out of bounds oh good recovery from Bennett and she controls the point as I said the Bulldogs have got to get Sarah Bennett involved and she made her presence known with the what does she have there she had the block the second another hit and then the kill McKenna back to serve Point Bulldogs with brand Setter and benett up at the net that's definitely an intimidating front row for the Bulldogs mckenny back to serve from libero to libero and another great block from the Bulldogs feel a little bit bit of momentum but still haven't seen that oh and that's a good one that's that's that's definitely indicative of great play from the Bulldogs the artisians need to take a timeout you can start to see the Bulldogs get a little bit of emotion and energy but really in order to to get this going I think that we need to see a real um how would you say it one of those really nice points where there's a rally there's you know some type of just a great dig that leads to this amazing set and then a Sarah Bennett Spike to really see these Bulldogs come out of their show I know that it's 11:30 here on a Saturday morning but we've got to see the energy we've got to see that classic point that real Milestone moment for the Bulldogs in order for them to really get some momentum going but so far playing very well in set number two 8 to four McKenna with the serve the Lefty with a little bit of touch from the artisian set from Reagan Kane and a great Spike once again from Sarah benett you can see the Bulldogs starting to get a little bit pumped up oh and it looks like it's a net violation from Martinsville couldn't quite understand what was going on at the moment hey I just want to say a quick thank you to all of you who are watching 77 different devices right now you know obviously we've got a 250 capacity here but I want to throw out a challenge for you the other night we were able to get devices to be able to watch this uh YouTube stream so I want you to take a moment text a friend share this on Facebook get this out there so that we can continue to show support for these girls here at bcsc Sports Live Well another point for Martinsville and it's 106 and the Bloomington North cougars have just entered the gymnasium they'll be taking on Columbus East in match number two of these semifinals looks like there's an official timeout not exactly sure what they'll be discussing hey and already thank you for the response we've been gaining some some new Watchers also if you haven't already we'd ask you to subscribe to our Channel by hitting that subscribe button so that you'll be uh notified whenever you're on YouTube when there's a new video from bcsc we're going to continue to try to stream uh Sports as well as the always engaging school board meetings I say this somewhat factiously but I do actually enjoy Schoolboard meetings quite a bit I learn a lot whenever I'm in that uh role streaming on Schoolboard meetings uh lots of important things that are being discussed especially during 2020 2021 school year coming up on Monday night actually at 6:30 we'll be live streaming uh that school board meeting which will happen um in the Terrace room at the administration building but uh capacity is even smaller there due to the size of the room and uh so we want to invite you to watch that if you're interested if you'd like to be engaged in all the decisions that are going on within bcsc School Corporation that'll be Monday at 6:30 well we've got a a score change as it looks like the official timeout has led to now Columbus North with an 115 lead and number 20 Grace Chapman serves it for the Bulldogs and Martinsville though bble to come back with the quick Point serve from the artisians oh and a very nice hit from Sarah Bennett once again number 17 Sydney Cooper back to serve for the Bulldogs looks like the officials are talking to Martinsville about how they're winding up making sure that they're staying in rotation good set from the artisians but a great block from Bennett McKenna oh and a very nice very nice move from Reagan Kane there we're getting closer to that 100 Mark of devices watching this sectional live stream appreciate each and every one of you who are taking the time to support these girls on this Saturday morning 11:34 number seven Katie hang back to serve and there we go oh I really thought that that was blocked by or at least tipped by Martinsville but this point goes back to the artisians number seven back to serve and that is exactly what the Bulldogs need more Sarah Bennett spikes and AA McKenna goes out of the game and gets some well-deserved congratulations Bennett back to serve oh and a great response from the artisians artisan to serve number 17 oh and gets lucky with that one and a point goes to Martinsville Columbus North takes the timeout departa on the court for the Bulldogs number 24 Madison white number 16 Reagan Kane 21 Maddie rup 25 Ava mckenny 20 Grace Chapman and 17 cydney Cooper artisian set to serve Madison white with a very nice looks like a double hit from Columbus North and Martinville is definitely getting some momentum in the second set oh looked like it was going to be a good return but just a little bit off there it's 14 to 12 Matty R oh tip by the Bulldogs leads to another Arian point back set to Madison white very nice hit from the Bulldogs great hustle from the artisians to get that ball back in play McKenna with the Dig oh and Madison white with the tiar drop and Columbus North able to get back the serve Logan bretter number 27 back in from the Bulldogs with Reagan Kane back to serve oh and a great shot from the artisians oh just a little bit too low there for number eight Macy Dorset and it is 16 to 14 Bulldogs Matty rot to serve good serve back to Martin oh and it's out of bounds from Martin a rare err from the junior Martin definitely the best player of set number one for the artisians the Lefty oh and a very nice shot from Logan Brader to lead the Bulldogs to an 1814 lead Matty rup set to serve for the Bulldogs oh and a nice shot from number 12 Emme Carter and the artisians have the serve once again Martin now to serve and it was out of bounds tried to go for that back right corner but unfortunately for her just a little bit out of bounds 19- 15 columus North with the lead and a net violation from the artisians north the first to 20 this time in set number two mckenny back to serve very nice dig from the Bulldogs oh good smash from number 23 Paige Osborne mckenny to Kane to Bennett and a great return from the artisians [Music] oh and that one just man that was that could have been one of those Milestone moments for the Bulldogs but unfortunately the artisians just sat there took it hit it back very nice dig good good play from Bennett ah and Matty rubbe tried to get that one but the one arm stab unable to come up with it and number one Molly Urban back to serve McKenna BR Setter Reagan Kane oh man very nice try from McKenna but unfortunately unable to come up with it and that forces the Bulldogs to take a timeout we're going to go ahead and take another quick break and say thank you to our sponsor First Financial Bank for their partnership with bcsc we appreciate all that they've done to support the live stream of bcsc what does it mean to believe in something to truly support and get behind it to be committed and invested in making sure it succeeds and grows at First Financial Bank we go beyond banking providing resources for dreams that matter and giving back to projects that make a difference as our family grows our commitment to we have to come back back to the action but I want to say again a special thank you to First Financial Bank oh and a great serve from Martinsville apologize the points were off there it is 20 to9 now for Martinsville good return from McKenna it's R Sarah Bennett and a great block from number 13 Sarah Bennett Grace Chapman in to serve for the Bulldogs 21 to9 very close second set some important points coming up very good serve to start out for the Bulldogs but Martin able to dig it Reagan Kane back sets to oh very nice dig once again for Martinsville good move from the CER Reagan Kane to Osborne mckenny good dig from mckenny important Point here for one of the teams to come up with this one this could really take the momentum for for either team oh and Martinville artisians come out with the point that was the longest rally of this match so far and you could tell the emotion that came from winning that point it's 21 to 20 Columbus North has the lead but it's a very close match here Martin comes up with the point there a net violation on Columbus North and the artisians have fought their way all the way back oh no all right Columbus North needs to buckle down as the artisians have taken a two-point lead Now set point for the artisians and you see the Martinsville crowd getting into it showing their appreciation for this hustle from their team and Martinsville has taken set number two we'll have to see how Columbus North responds but that that's got to be a disappointment for them up playing a very nice set number two and unfortunately unable to to sustain their lead once again I really think the key for the Bulldogs is as much as they can to get Sarah Bennett involved and specifically I think the um Reagan Kan the setter for the Bulldogs has done a really great job of trying to be as consistent as she can but it's hard for her to get those sets to her uh to her key hitter when um the first hit isn't as consistent and you know that's really a tribute to Martinsville really controlling the speed uh with their with their spikes you know whether it be McKenzie Martin up at the net or the Lefty and I'm forgive me I'm not able to find her name right now but the the Lefty is putting plane on the right side uh those two key outside hitters have just done a really great job of of controlling their spikes to certain areas that have made it hard for the Bulldogs to return the ball really need the seniors for Columbus North in set number three to step up in order to continue this season this is the best of five uh set best of five sets and with the artisians up to to zero this could be it I'm going to go ahead and reset our scoreboard back to zero as while the artisians are up two to zero the Bulldogs really need to treat this like it's a brand new ball game and they've got to win this this set and that's really they all they can focus on they need one set at a time Martinsville will start out serving in this third and possibly decisive last set I believe Martinsville early on in the season on September 3rd won three games three sets to one and uh really like to see a a set come back from Columbus North right now Martinsville starts third set with the serve back set to Madison white very nice shot but once again the Lefty this time I've got her Grace Reynolds starts out with winning the point for the artisians that's interesting and another out serve really interesting I just saw something number nine Grace Reynolds for the artisians she spikes left-handed but serves with her right hand haven't seen that before and Martin with the kill and Martin will go back to serve Matty R just a little bit out of bounds and that is out of bounds [Music] the only two points that Columbus North has this set has been from out serves from the artisians let's see if they can get some points on the board from oh just a little bit low on that hit four to2 now artisians with Molly Urban back to serve for Martinville Point Martinsville very nice serve from Urban theen has been doing a great job but just unable to get up with a well positioned serve there Matty rot you know it's been either perfect serves or net serves for the artisians here in set number three very nice block from Madison white the senior for the Bulldogs and here comes Sarah Bennett in hope that we can see her get involved early just a little bit out of bounds Columbus North able to get this point six to four Columbus North with McKenna serving oh nice dig from Matty rup oh and a great defense at the net from the dogs oh the ball is just barely Out Of Reach for the Bulldogs Brader that was on the yep that was on the court thank you br stader with the point for the Bulldogs number 20 Grace Chapman into the rotation now back to serve for the Bulldogs brand Setters come out to get a quick break break back set from the artisians but a great block from Osborne and Bennett six to7 artisians with the one-point lead and Martin comes in for Martinsville and makes her presence known number seven in now for the artisians back to serve serve off the net Sarah Bennett with a nice shot but artisian able to come up with it and once again McKenzie Martin with another point really been impressed with Martin's consistency throughout this entire match whether it be up at the net with her spikes or with their defense this is where the Bulldogs really need to lock in and focus this could be pretty quickly either get back in the game or the whole match could be over McKenna back sets good dig from Reagan Kane Matty rub to Paige Osborne Martin Matty Ru Paige Osborne good one-arm dig Oh no just a little low on the hand there from Sarah Bennett and we've reached that 100 Mark so thank you very much for all of you who are tuning in to the live stream if you think about it we've got 125 on each side and with you watching this we've got a 100 more devices and whether that be one person watching or or a family it's great to have you in attendance today and a very nice B from the Bulldogs there we go not sure who the credit for but both Reagan Kane and Sarah Bennett did a great job of putting that point away and a very nice shot from number seven Ella Whitney gets the artisians back on serve and El Whitney goes back to the service line depr row serve Reagan Kane to Sarah Bennett and that looked like it was a yeah a little bit of a lift they're saying and Bennett with the point for the dogs Bennett to serve for the Bulldogs Martin keeps the ball going Matty Ru Reagan came with the set to Madison white and that was definitely a tip very nice shot from the senior 12 to9 Martinsville with the lead and it was out of bounds from Martin powerful Spike from Martin a 59 Junior Bennett for the Bulldogs very nice dig and a great back set from Reagan Kane that ends with a Madison white Spike on the right side oh great decision from Reagan Kan and Martinsville has to take a timeout in hopes of stopping the momentum of the Bulldogs columus Memorial we just got an announcement from in-house announcer Dennis Pierce that at the uh soccer Regional in um Columbus North and Evansville are tied at z00 in the second overtime so great match going on between Evansville and Columbus North and here at bcsc were definitely pulling for Columbus North and uh great to see uh fall Sports Action happening as you know when you look around the crowd it's it's a much different view than a packed gymnasium with covid-19 but we're just thankful to be playing during this fall season good serve from Bennett oh no and Martin able to hit the angle there and the artisians back in the lead Matty rup it's Reagan Kane very nice decision once again from the setter oh wow that was a scary one there and it was out of bounds from Martinsville so we are back at a High 130 with Reagan Kane to serve for the Bulldogs and a great block from Maddie R Reagan Kane set to serve looks like a handcuffed her a little bit there and the artisians not able to get the ball back critical points coming up in this set number three for the Bulldogs to keep the momentum going and it looks like it's a net violation from the artisians number 10 Mackenzie Martin is definitely very strong on the left side and G just looked like she was a little out of position there unfortunately oh great serve from the Bulldogs oh we got to get it over that's exactly what I'm saying McKenzie Martin very strong on the left side for the artisians that was a rare air for her on the right side in this previous point but she was able to make up for it 16 to4 excuse me 16 to 14 great serve from Martinsville and Columbus North opts to take a time out we're going to go go ahead and go back to First Financial so that you can uh see them one more time and thank you for their sponsorship of bcse sports what does it mean to believe in something to truly support and get behind it to be committed and invested in making sure it succeeds and grows at First Financial Bank we go beyond banking providing resources for dreams that matter and giving back to projects that make a difference as our family grows our commitment to serve the community grows with it First Financial Bank because together we're better and we're back here at the orange pit Mackenzie Martin of the Martinsville artisians set to serve mckenny to Kane it's a Brader oh nice and a very nice oh no looks like it's a net violation on the Bulldogs a little bit surprised by that late call but it's 16 all now ah wow right on the line great serve from Mart the art Tans have taken back the lead in this possibly decisive third set oh wow great shot from Madison Wyatt the artisians thought that they were going to possibly come up with it but unable to get it back on that third shot in the senior Matty root back to serve oh wow I'm not sure about that I thought that uh the Martinsville crowd was more refereeing than the actual ref there but that's okay and the artisians come back with a vengeance 19- 17 the labero number one Molly Urban set to serve McKenna keeps the ball in play oh wow very nice shot from number 17 Ella Whitney and they are Martinsville once again the first to 20 points up two sets To None oh looked like Paige Osborne got a little bit handcuffed by that one and 217 Martinsville Madison Wyatt very nice shot able to keep this one close and McKenna McKenna now to serve the senior and a great shot from number nine Grace Reynolds as we just heard from announcer Dennis Pierce Kus North and Evansville Memorial has gone into penalty kicks after a second overtime of going 0 they are now into the decisive penalty kicks in this Regional 22- 18 Martinsville artisians with the lead the Lefty back to serve for Martinsville McKenna with the return oh and just a little bit low there from Sarah Bennett Matty R set to Reagan Kane and Sarah Bennett comes back Grace Chapman number 20 set to serve for the Bulldogs good block from the Bulldogs oh and it's out of bounds and that will give the Martinsville Artisans a match point 24 to 19 with Katie Hong back to serve Grace Chapman and Sarah Bennett says this isn't over yet Sydney Cooper serving for the Bulldogs Matty R oh wow what a point and the Bulldogs awarded the point not really sure what happened there looked like there was a violation though that was eventually called on Martinsville 2124 and a great serve from m [Applause] Kenny well excuse me that was a great serve from number 17 Sydney C Cooper excuse me and Martinsville has chosen to take a timeout with Columbus North their back against the wall we can see we're going to see if they can keep this match going Martinsville artisians have really played a solid first two sets in this last this third set it's it's been more of just an even match between both sides and we'll see who's going to come up with this third set Kayla back definitely had a motivational message for her girls from Martinsville and I'm sure Quin Schulz just told her girls to keep doing what they're doing and forget about the score and one point at a time Sydney Cooper to serve oh and that is the match well three sets to zero Columbus North goes down once again to Martinsville in this sectional semifinal we're going to go ahead and give our um offensive and defensive Player of the Year Awards now for Martinsville we're going to give the Jolie rentals and Jolie development offensive player of the game to really uh the person that I'm sure if you're watching this match you've you've seen it the whole time it's been McKenzie Martin she uh the 59 Junior outside hitter was really involved on almost every point for Martinsville and she came up with plenty of kills for Martinsville as far as a defensive player of the game we're going to give that to a Columbus North labero Ava McKenna throughout the match she was hustling diving digging did a great job serving as well but she really did a great job on defense so we're going to give that Overhead Door of South Central Indiana defensive player of the game to AA McKenna for those of you who are watching uh this live stream uh due to uh the way that I SAA sectionals go we're going to have to start a new live stream now so if you would just give me a few moments we're going to take a couple minute break and then we'll be back with match number two on Saturday between Columbus East and Bloomington North that will still be here on our bcsc YouTube channel and we will see you in just a few moments
