this special meeting of the gilbert governing board to order today is friday october 30th and i appreciate those of you who have decided to join on live stream and those of you who are here in the building with us today we have a work study session presentation and the possibility of a brief school board meeting shortly following the presentations and the discussion at this point all board members are present dr mccord i'll defer to you in just a moment i just want to set the stage here the reason for our meeting is to engage this board and staff in a discussion regarding the methods that might be utilized should we have to take other steps to help mitigate the spread of virus and how we would do that there is a need to address a series of circumstances especially given the fact that the communication and the information that is coming to us from the state and the county level is changing frequently we have based our mitigation strategies our school openings and many of our decisions on much of the information that has come to us from those two entities and we want to make sure we stay at least current with the curve with that dr mccord and staff have organized a presentation and will be making some recommendations throughout and those recommendations are simply that we as a board probably will chime in and make our own recommendations as well and we may or may not make some decisions regarding a plan today but at least we are open and discussing the plan so that all of us in this room and in the community have the opportunity to at least understand why we are moving in this direction so without any further ado i will defer to dr mccourt thank you dr santa cruz governing board members if you just give me a second while i connect here and for those of you watching we are now at item 2 the presentation discussion of topics item 2.01 presentation discussion regarding health benchmarks and what methods to use to return to hybrid or online learning if needed if needed is a very important and operative word as we go through this discussion dr mccourt thank you sir um appreciate all of you being here this morning and to everyone out there watching this is one of those situations where we don't like to have meetings outside of our regular meeting time but time is of the essence and i think this is extremely important not just for folks in this room but everybody out in classrooms as well as in our community so today we'll be talking i'm going to go over the current benchmarks since they came out yesterday and go through some of that at the end of that i'll also talk about how many total coping cases we've had with students and staff from starting on september 11th when we actually started counting those types of things and then look at the average percentages that have been posted on our dashboard each week just give you an idea of what that looked like and then we'll segue into talking about um what will move us into hybrid what will move us online and um and then we'll i'm sure we'll have plenty discussion throughout so i'll move on this has been in the news quite a bit and actually took some people by surprise last week when the dashboard came up and i mentioned this tuesday night the graphic on the left is is what we've been using as well as the three different types of benchmarks and then thursday morning when they updated the dashboard it changed to the graphic on the right which is much different than the graphic on the left in a lot of different ways a lot of things been thrown out there about that school leaders were consulted on this and whatnot and i know in gilbert public schools we had no idea nobody consulted with us about a change and um i checked with many east valley superintendents and nor were they or anybody in their district so i just want to make sure people understand that because there's been people asking why didn't you tell us of this change well we found out just like everybody else did so i just think that's worth mentioning and again looking at the changes [Music] for the new dashboard you're looking at red yellow green and they're reporting them in a similar way in terms of you know for the first one cases per hundred thousand uh whatnot but it's where they fall and how they structure them so in order for something to be green in that area of course it has to be below 10.

for something to be green in the percent positivity it has to be below 5 and for something to remain green in hospital visits for covalent illness it has to be below five and of course anything above a hundred in the cases per hundred thousand would turn red for percent positivity anything above ten percent would turn red and the same goes for the third category hospital visits for covet-like illnesses and this is per county they also you can look at it for the entire state then you click on your own county and it'll tell you where you're sitting so just wanted to chat about that real quick and again that just explains some of those areas in the level of transmission green is minimal yellow is moderate and red is substantial currently as of yesterday maricopa county data is 84 per 100 000 course that's trending up that's moderate risk criteria two percent positivity is at 5.5 percent that has changed from green to yellow which is moderate risk and it's trending up and criteria three uh went up a 0.1 percent so it is trending up but it's minimal risk almost level and that was the data reported yesterday for maricopa county for gilbert public schools this is just a snapshot of the last two weeks i'll get to the details on the next slide we went up to 100.33 per hundred thousand which is considered a substantial risk we went from 58.22 last week to 100.33 criteria 2 percent positivity is 6.78 again trending up last week we were at 3.93 percent and in criteria three we remained the same at three point all right three percent and again looking at those same numbers side by side just ready um so has the has the district boundary data so it's basically it's it's um the data that's within our boundary area it's not necessarily in gilbert public schools but that's what we're seeing but it's in our boundary has it always been a a week a week ahead because this says data reported on october 29th it always has okay okay so and if you'll notice side by side maricopa county actually is a week before right right okay or a week they they have for some of them one they're a week off on a couple of the areas so and it always has been that yes okay nothing's changed there until today the date the the times of reporting have not changed that i'm aware of okay um and i also want to iterate a little bit something here if you click on our district or you look in that area as a district we're considered yellow okay which is a moderate risk which is pretty much where we've been since the beginning some people seem to think because we have one area in red right now that the whole area is red that's not the case in a lot of the areas if you click even on the zip codes which within those areas you will see some red per 100 000 that are over the 100 mark so i think they average that out to determine for the entire school district the the moderate risk i mean that's what i'm assuming well and dr dr mccord my understanding was that previously it would be two weeks above the red they would change that two weeks below they would change down et cetera now as you had that in the previous slot that's no longer how they're measuring it's now when all three areas are red or all three areas are yellow or all three areas are green so that was the change that was in in this week versus necessarily the the two weeks right in in any single criteria correct and they changing so that you have to do better to be in green right that was also kind of like a warning right yeah um yeah and that was the big difference one read in the past we were to consider going virtual now at all three and again and there's there's some definite disagreements about that out there among organizations and so um i'm not going to get into that but i i just know that that swirls out there dr mccord you and i spoke a little bit yesterday and i think it's also important to note that since you mentioned zip codes that a number in a particular zip code may not may not be consistent with a number on our dashboard our dashboard and simply at least in in my people mind is that one that that number reflects cases in the area in that zip code those may or may not be students who attend our schools they could be anybody and we need to understand that there are a variety of assisted living homes in our area there are a variety of people living in those zip codes so to make the leap and the assumption and correct me if i'm wrong that those numbers are reflective of the numbers of students in schools with that kind of issue going on would not necessarily be correct i agree with you on that okay yep all right and just looking at uh the last four weeks for maricopa county you can see where we've gone up again just to reiterate i in in criteria one especially i changed in the past it was all green based on the previous criteria i changed it just to reflect what's current just in case i don't want to confuse anybody and then same for gps boundaries again a comparison of the last four weeks i think it's telling i think it's telling to notice to note that perhaps for the first time our district boundaries are higher than the county as a whole that has traditionally not been the case we've been better off in the county as a whole and right now we're a little bit worse off and as i was clicking through our zip codes the west side of our district seems to be a little more stable than the east side and then as you move east even past our boundaries as i looked into other zip codes and other districts just to see those numbers are rising there as well and it might be more population in those areas and so and that's consistent with what we're seeing at schools as well the east side of our district the high schools in particular as well as some of the elementaries are seeing higher numbers than the west side correct um just so you guys are up to date we started our we went back uh the day after labor day in person that's when we started tracking in terms of what's happening on campuses and so to date as of this morning we have we have had some of those are still active but many of course are not but total number of cases is 126 of that 20 staff members and the rest 106 students and then our weekly dashboard every week we update it on wednesday and we show a total percentage based on the numbers at the bottom in the district and here's a listing of those numbers we didn't report for fall break because we weren't here but that's our average over the last five weeks of reporting and that's for all of our schools including staff and and and district and transportation employees as well that's including staff students everybody that's affiliated with gilbert public schools which is so the total number is what thirty five thousand thirty six says i'm just oh total yeah i'd say close to 35.

okay that includes staff and students correct dr mccord if you were gonna assign a color to to our october 28th what color would it be color yeah well that's a good question because you base that if you're going to base that off of what the county has said i think we'd be green but again i don't think that's a fair way to do that just because those are the number of people tested and we don't know how many people have been tested within our schools so but that's the actual number of cases correct which one the thirteen percent the third thirteen point thirteen point i mean i'm sorry yep that's the actual that's that's the percentage of that was reported on that day okay and i think it's important to realize and know that they fall off and on so that's a moment in time on that day okay so dr mccord on the previous slide we've had 20 cumulative cases among staff members and we've got roughly 2 000 teachers yeah and staff and staff right um sorry i i say that more inclusive and students we've had 106 and we have roughly 31 000 students 33 yeah that's including online 33 right right so you back that off it's probably more like 27 28.

oh 45. i was going to say 2 000 is just the teachers i was still stuck on teachers thank you well and and i would say our global academy students could also i mean they're not on our campus but right they could also have a case of koba depending on what happens we don't count them though just i mean no offense to them but no and that's why i was looking at the 28 000 so i mean if i just quickly do that math of our staff cumulatively we've had point four percent roughly of of the staff affected by covert cases and we've had point three zero zero point 0.3 percent of students affected to date and that's of information provided to us or information that we have run down that is what is reported to us on campuses so yes and could there be others out there of course and and again i don't want to you know any any case is a risk to to to an individual i i'm looking at more from a comparison that we had more staff but we had those numbers are so similar that you got to say that it's affected the population as a whole the same we haven't had a higher percentage of teachers we haven't had a higher percentage of students of that right and again that's since september 11th so i just want to make sure people understand that okay kind of the part that um another piece of why we're here you know with the rising cases we do have some concerned staff we do have some concerned parents we do have some concerned students and so and we have concerned concern here i mean we we want to make sure we're doing all we can to keep people safe knowing that our goal is to educate kids to the best of our ability and so as we're moving through this and seeing how cases are rising we need to be able to understand what's going to put us back to hybrid what's going to put us back to online or virtual and so i think that's where some discussion needs to happen here and and like you had stated at the beginning dr santa cruz if we make a decision today if not we can make a decision next week but more than anything i think a good discussion is is worthwhile here um you know some of the questions that have come up in my head as i'm thinking about this and i know to you and others that have talked to me if we return to hybrid do we do it as an entire district or just by school if you'll notice on our dashboard we have several schools that have no cases or have one or you know low amount some have never had any so that's something to think about and then what number do we use to determine a change um do we look at percentage of active cases on a campus total number of active cases for an entire school district standard number for elementary junior high high school what i mean by like that is no matter what your population is at your elementary if we say there's five cases that will jump you to hybrid junior high there's number high school that that's what i mean by that uh strictly just going by the county benchmark strictly going by boundary benchmarks again things that we've all talked about to some degree and at some level but i think plays into making some decisions or having some discussion here today dr mccord just to minimize confusion and so that the public understands what what definition we're using could you define our use of the definition hybrid and how we're we're thinking so ms wood and i've had several conversations about this and i think it's good i i do because i think even when i say online you know dr newman back there i she said can you change that to virtual because that's kind of what we use but i didn't change it dr newman because it was already in the agenda so um so yeah some of those things interchange hybrid what we're talking about here is we talked about the phased-in plan we talked about students m through l coming to school monday the rest coming through on tuesday wednesday they're all online and then continue that process again thursday and friday and so when we say hybrid that's what we're talking about so that they should focus on the a through l m through z that wednesday kind of cleanup day and folks coming to school according to their alpha listing generally speaking on the designated days that's what we are defining as hybrid that we would move to for this person either by school or by district for this purpose to be sure the term hybrid can be applied to all of the other mutations of what delivery methods we would decide to use however for our purposes that's how we're defining hybrid the other is the traditional in-person face-to-face instruction that all of us generally have experienced in our lifetime yep correct um you know looking at those and ask those some of those questions and and kevin and i having conversations you know my recommendation is to use a percentage of students and staff on a campus and make a change in delivery model on a school-by-school basis and and one it's easy to calculate it's easy to keep track of too it's easy to understand by students staff and families they see that they can understand that and the other piece of that is trying to keep kids in school as long as we can and knowing that at certain or several campuses that it's not necessarily an issue in terms of spreading or having cases so i think it's it could be better for everybody involved but again that's my recommendation but i'm sure it'll be a topic of discussion uh and should we reach a specified positive case count on any campus additional layer investigation will be initiated by our district health services team in consultation with county health department and some of those things that you have to consider when you're looking at that is family relationships between cause positive cases so let me do a scenario for you let's say we have a threshold of six students on a small elementary school okay and three or four of those students are brothers and sisters which is very possible is that a reason to close that school because they're all contained within their household or is that something that we need to consider if we're going to shift the hybrid or shift to online so those types of things i still think we need to look at is it something to do with a program at desert ridge we had football players that had coveted and and coaches and we shut the program down and they have been and i think that was a good thing instead of shutting the entire school down or moving them to hybrid so we can look at those types of things to mitigate that but at the same time if we went school by school we could we could look at those a little bit specific more specific to what the needs are on those campus and dr mccord in in light of that recommendation um i did have a phone call yesterday with miss amber franco who was the president of the gilbert education association and she reached out to me and we spoke a little bit and she indicated that that's what the teachers would like to see as well that they would like to see us look at school-specific metrics versus a district-wide shutdown so i was grateful to hear that that's also consistent with individual conversations that i've had with teachers um okay so i i'm hopeful that that representing the sizable portion of our teachers uh is is an approach that i think will keep parents happy and keep teachers happy and i i would concur with that my discussions have yielded similar information the other question that comes into mind let's broaden the use of the term program and it becomes more impactful probably at 7 through 12 rather than k through 6 but k through 6 would still be impacted and when we talk about program and we determine based on whatever information we have utilized to make that decision to close down a program for a period of time is that all encompassing does that include athletics in the evening and all of it uh i think that's for a specific program it would right yeah you know if if we looked at gilbert high school for example because it hit a threshold does that mean for that period of time whatever we determine everything ceases if we go to hybrid or if we go to now in my head part of me says if we go to online completely online hybrid i think we could definitely have some discussions about that to keep things moving forward because we did we even though games hadn't started really yet maybe golf did i think um we could we would definitely try to keep things moving uh forward with that yeah i just think that would be a question i'm not advocating i'm not advocating one way or the other i'm just saying that's that's uh an element that we have to consider most definitely well i think one of the things that we need to look at and i when we get to the numbers that you show for different just some suggestions for different campuses i did a little work on um what would be the numbers of people who have to quarantine depending on the number of cases and that can really go up fast oh yeah i mean really i i just chose the number three thinking if somebody's sitting in a class the person in front of them and the person to each side has to quarantine and if you get in high school where they have six classes and then you times that by the number of students if it be you know pretty soon we've got half the campus quarantined um depend you know if you assume that it's different kids in every class but um it it goes up really fast and um there was a story in the new york times i read about a school in utah where the school board did not want to shut the school down but in the end because they were quarantining so many kids they ended up closing the school for a month and then were able to reopen but you know that that's a huge concern because that's a lot of kids and they're also missing school correct waiting to see if they have symptoms or not and then if they get symptomatic even maybe missing more school because you have to wait 14 days yup to figure it out it it is and that's we we've heard from many families who um have a difficult time with that and and i can well appreciate that um and us trying to follow the guidelines the best way we can um it's difficult i mean it's it's hard i don't know jen frost has talked to the county about that and i don't think there's i mean they responded but there's there's no movement on it and i don't know if there will be and uh i miss humphries i think you bring up a very good point if we've got for example you know four kids in an elementary school those four kids are generally contained i know they might move a little bit but they're generally contained in each of their individual classrooms where to your point at a high school if we have a high school with 15 kids who have active cases well if i take those 15 kids and my understanding is that it's usually the kids to the sides so it's two kid generally two kids there may be exceptions i'm looking back to see if miss frost corrects me so it's generally two kids per student if they have a full slate of six classes that's 180 kids that are out on on quarantine that may or may not have coveted but were exposed plus the 15 so you have potentially 195 kids out of school for that time based on on the 15 kids at school so it does affect a larger number and to dr mccord's i think probably all of us have taken phone calls texts etc with frustration with the quarantine please you know parents who are listening online recognize that that is a strict guideline from the county um and as dr mccord mentioned we have we have questioned the county whether they could come back with a negative test if they could come back you know our goal is to keep kids in school but as long as the county health department is following that strictly we're following it strictly so i did pick the number three so if you go to the one percent and we'll get there if it's 19 kids at campo you times that by three kids after quarantine that's 57 it times that by six periods that's 342.

because wait wait wait so so 19. so there's 19 kids and they're each in six classes and we quarantine three kids from each class which is a 542 that's a lot of assumptions but that's a yeah that's assuming that there's no repeats that you know this kid isn't in another class with another kid or something but but it goes up really quickly dr mccord and i agree with your mathematical approach other than from everything i've been told from miss frost it's usually two kids it's very rarely three okay well that's good to know but i just picked three because i thought one in front and two to the side you probably don't excuse me sorry i didn't know where are you finished yes okay thank you you probably don't have this on on hand right now but do we have kind of a ballpark figure about how many kids we have had to have quarantined because that that kind of goes into what we're talking about now if we have an idea right even right now how many kids were missing let me let me turn a little bit apart give her a few minutes let's see if she can look through some stuff and we'll see if we can get i should have thought of that before so so two corollary questions to that um do we have any indication of how many cases are actually spreading at school and i think one indication of that is okay we have you know 15 kids who and i'm using 15 because we have a school that's at 15.

we have 15 kids who are uh active cases and that what's 180 that are quarantined of that 180 how many of them actually contracted covet it would be interesting to understand that that are we really spreading it or are or are our mitigation measures containing it because that's the goal is to contain it right the other thing is and and is we recognize it even if we move hybrid those kids still aren't able to attend school going hybrid they still have to quarantine 14 days so they're still gonna miss the in person not only miss half the in person for those two weeks but but everybody's missing but everyone so so they're still affected so the one is are we spreading it or is the mitigation working and the other is does change really spare those kids anything well here's the question i would would ask miss frost is if we're in hybrid where it's only half the kids and we can spread out more maybe those kids wouldn't have to quarantine because they are further away i mean that's that's possible that's a question that i think we missed frost come on up and let's use a microphone so that folks can hear you i appreciate you i know that you would you would prefer not to be there but that's okay hybrid we did have a couple circumstances and the majority of the classrooms were able to spread out more so that did require less quarantine but to mr carr's question or maybe it was not but we have not seen a lot of turnover when it comes to a student that is positive in a classroom those students need to be quarantined and then the quarantine students ending up turning up positive so most of the quarantine students or almost all the quarantine students have remained healthy and been able to return to school correct once they're according to correct we have um just as a quick recollection through all the the numbers and names um i know of one right now i'm not saying that that's the only one but i only know of one from my head of a student that was quarantined and that ended up themselves turning out positive and that's not to say that that was a classroom exposure either they could have got it somewhere else because it's widespread right there are actually a lot of reports out now regarding school time and the spread spain does a huge amount of contact tracing and they have not seen an issue with school spread affecting the community things like that there's a lot of schools that have opened across you know europe things like that where there have been spikes and then they plateaued so vanderbilt university as well has done a lot of studies yale there's a psychologist at yale that's done some studies and so we're looking at areas such as this where we have currently as of today 43 active cases in a community and our population is you know 258 000 people so that's our school community um whereas the dashboard is reflecting the entire community inside those boundaries and and i would say that also uh kjs was discussing this on my way over as i was listening to the radio they were actually talking about this very specific issue of keeping schools open the metrics and that in the schools we seem to be doing a better job of mitigating and keeping the virus from spreading right i agree if i can just give a quick shout out to our health services staff the nurses we have here in this district are absolutely amazing we are very lucky to have nurses a lot of districts don't have the amount of nurses that we do and we are also looking at in the schools particular if we see an area weight training class or an art class or just an area that causes us to take a second pause they are ramping up efforts in those areas um our principals have been helping our you know everybody is working on that so the minute they see something where they think there could even be a slight correlation they're readjusting that our school staff have really jumped on that to make sure that you know we're doing everything that we can and it's been kind of exciting just because there's don't push back they're all working together to make sure that we're doing what we can so that the kids can stay in school can i ask one question about shared materials i know we're trying to discourage that but sometimes it's not really possible to not share those materials right what do we do in the case of shared materials they're just trying to minimize it as much as possible trying to minimize it um as a as a mom i have had some emails from teachers asking us to purchase individual items and so um not to toot my own horn but then i have purchased extras so that if there are students that can't afford that we have that i know in a particular art class on a campus that they're using they're wiping things down in between use but that was actually something that we just looked at was another class that um we wanted to try that as not try it but do that as well and so we're making sure that those classes have the materials that they have these as you all know wipes have been in short supply so whatever we can to look at to make sure that things are wiped down in between that the students are maybe sanitizing more frequently because there are you uh shared items things like that okay thank you don't go too far i was gonna say you just as well sit there because there's probably going to be another question you know what i can i'm okay you'd rather run back and forth [Laughter] okay so based on my recommendation i threw out some um some numbers based on some schools um campo desert ridge high highland high mesquite junior greenfield l meridian and mesquite elementary and just kind of a breadth of you know how many people are on each campus and again this is students and staff so if we went with a number of three percent uh looking at campo 57 students to that's we'd look at going hybrid and then you see the rest of the numbers there for the rest of the campuses and obviously it's just general math but the lower the number of people on campus the lower number of cases that will be there that's and then here it is for two and a half which i i'm sorry so i have one question when we think about this and these numbers is this 57 cases in a week is that how we're defining it or is it 57 cases over two weeks this would be 57 cases within uh that are active that i would say okay so like our wednesday dashboard correct if we see this number that we're saying and i just wanted to say we haven't been anywhere near these numbers i just want our public to know if you've been looking at the dashboard this is we haven't been anywhere near these numbers at this point this is just you're just putting out a number yeah i'm just i'm just throwing out numbers okay well one of the concerns i hear from teachers is that not all cases are being reported um i know my my understanding uh is that we could even look back if if a from everything we know people who are being tested we're getting 90 plus percent are being reported by like by parents is that correct that's what i understand i would say i mean higher than that higher than that great in those cases where somebody a parent doesn't report to the school do we still learn about that case the county will contact us if they look at the number if they look at the person's address and it looks like it's in our district they'll contact us and say hey you know johnny or sally has cova do they go to your schools and then we make contact and track it back from there so so at that point we can look no sometimes again my understanding from previous conversations typically we get notice from the parent and even before the county has a result we're notifying the county of a case in our school correct yeah if we're notified in a timely fashion right in the rare case where we haven't noticed the county they get notice of the positive case they don't see that student already reported from the school they then that turn around and report that to us correct so from it from a perspective of of knowing about it might delay when we know about it but we still know about it right well i was gonna say um if people are i want to think that our parents are doing their best to be honest and truthful but if someone would maybe not take their child to be tested or test someone in their family i mean i think we could also just look at absences and see what our absences are doing because if someone yeah no they do the nurses are following that you you if you have a child absent if you have any covet-like symptoms you dial number one and and you basically get a direct line to the nurse at that point she knows or he knows that you're there if it's anything else like doctor's appointment that day or whatever then you do number two or like um whatever you know something else it would take out of school like a driver's test whatever it is you know then you could go to number two and then they don't necessarily follow up on that but they're very from my experience as a parent they're very much watching those absences and the nurses are following up with any symptoms like that at all so and if you have covid like symptoms you either have to go get a negative test to come back or you need to stay home for 10 days so even if it's not being reported as a positive test they're not at school well the idea is they're not at school spreading it my grandson had a runny nose yeah it dried up in 24 hours we got to go back to school but otherwise he would have to stay but are they checking with but the nurse checks and i mean it's a very much they're very cognizant of it is what i've been hearing so thank you for all right and if i if i understood miss humphrey's question correctly she's asking if the teacher never does call the line and never pushes that one if the student is absent for a couple of days then the nurses are proactively calling the parent either nurse or attendance right so i mean if we hear nothing we'll we'll call and find out hey and talked about this that rumors run rampant and a lot of times schools try to run some of those down just because they want to either figure out what's going on with someone or ease someone's mind and so um you know if a kid kids have been gone for a couple days just because they don't feel well for whatever reason and all of a sudden you know remember and primarily on the high school level all of a sudden this kid has coveted according to the you know rumor mill and so and that's not the case and and and that's detrimental to the kid and to the family and so we have to be very careful with that i think that's an important factor you know to mr carr's point as well the internal communication at a particular school without violating hipaa laws looping back to the classroom teacher and at least giving them some reassurance that we're on that topic or we're on that case and that there is no need for alarm would be appropriate i don't know what we're doing in that regard but uh that's some of the communication i've read that we've received is that uh you know that rumor begins and they make up their own story and i'm not saying that they're fabricating something i think it's a level of anxiety that we need to address and would you agree with that miss frost for the record she's just trying to get in her steps you could take the microphone back there i don't know so to your point absolutely one of the issues that we see is that when a student is out for an illness or a dentist appointment um for the day if a parent decides to keep them out for the day all of a sudden that one day absent begins to spark a story or if a student is positive and we do need to quarantine other students those students that are quarantined somehow become positive not that they are actually positive but the feeling is they're gone for a number of days so they must have something and that's unfortunate just because it's a virus and it's through no fault of anybody's people get it and it just ends up sparking more fear and anxiety in my opinion and social media does a lot to help that i think so um there's a lot of perception about what's going on i got a call the other day asking if gilbert high school was closing down gilbert high school had zero cases i saw that on social media yeah so so it's really um it's really unfortunate because parents are unable to focus on what's important and i don't want to lose focus on what kids really need right now which is our support they need their social emotional support they need all those things not worrying about whether or not there's a million cases when there really aren't thank you ms frost i think it's important to reiterate at this point that this discussion is a desire on the part of this board and please correct me if i'm speaking out of place board members to keep our schools open and to keep everyone safe as as much as possible and we're trying to thread a needle here between the rumor between the actual fact using the information that we're given using the information that we derived and trying to go forward that way so it is and you all know members of the public and and folks in this room how complex this whole issue has become and it morphs and there are mutations every day of something else i want our faculty and staff to know that uh and the students and the community know that they are uppermost in our minds and we're not perfect but we're doing all that we know how to do to try to thread this needle and miss frost and her staff have been absolutely invaluable in getting that information through and staff in general here at the district level and on the campus have done what they can as much as they can to keep things moving forward that doesn't mean they're not anxious that doesn't mean that they're looking not looking at the numbers in every class i know that mr mcintosh and ms udall are looking at numbers constantly to try to minimize large burgeoning classes and spaces that they're using for instruction i know that miss udall has monitored at the high school level which classes are growing so i just want the public to know that we are trying to look at as many dimensions as we possibly can to thread this needle mr j do you have something i i just wanted to tag back on to mr reed's mr reed mr carr's comment about the case is being reported and this is i just want to kind of lay it out because i have heard this from teachers also that parents aren't reporting if you go to any covid testing site that is then reported to the county correct any of any of them any of them so there are some very small rare few ones that still report via paper and facts i don't know which ones those are those are on our list for for referrals but i will tell you i have had one case over a fall break that was not reported by a parent that was reported from the county and that county investigator used to contact us through the the gilbert website to find me and then ask me to look up that student so that's one out of all of these cases the parents are i feel being honest about when their student is tested yes but but but there is something in place that that guarantees yes okay and do you know what the the the time is on that how long how affordable yeah i'm sure they're probably overloaded but now now it had we have seen it slow down a little bit um over fall break it was a couple days but it's just like anything else they have only so many investigators so i i want to point out too i mean i've had a couple conversations with the maricopa public health department and one of the one of the the great things that we have is we have some data to look at we're not flying blind i mean you think about the pandemic of 1918 we're not just guessing about where people are and who's sick and trying to figure out how to solve this we have all this data and it may not be perfect but it's much better than not having any idea where the cases are or you know how sick how what the spread is in the community so i think that is a huge uh advantage that we have with our technology and and the things that we've been able to do that is the one thing that i do worry about a little bit that skews um the data is the the percent positivity because we have a lack of testing now so the lack of testing and then the number of positives that drives that number up yeah so i worry that that's still a criteria that we're using because it's not necessarily reflective of all the tests in the community anymore it's a test small it's a small sample and so um you know if we're going to look at numbers i'd rather look at a number that was a little more indicative of what's going on in the community in other words probably the positive cases the actual cases well we know how many actual cases but they that percent of positivity is um looked at according to how many 10 number of tests have been taken and so when the number of tests taken is down that drives that positivity up just the percentage-wise because the sheer number of tests is lower so it's it's a number that tends to make people anxious however it's not necessarily a great reflection of what's going on in the community okay can i this right here um you have this is the actual number of students students and staff and staff okay so with what you just said is the three percent an accurate number in terms of just the like there's 57 at campbell that's of the total kids at campo it would just be the number of actual cases versus so as opposed to there's no testing involved yeah okay that that that's good yeah and that will be active don't want to cut off discussion but i really because these numbers that dr mccord has put into a graph here are pretty telling as it relates to communicating with our public and with ourselves about whatever percentages we plug in the number is large and so we want to see that so that we can get to the discussion about which what we want to do as we go through this before before we go on can i just add one thing so miss frost what within hipaa kind of back to what you said what with inhibit can we do to help teachers feel like they are being informed and able to be safe in their classrooms so we do actually let the teacher know that there's a positive student in their classroom okay just don't name the student okay and so um even if we weren't going to tell them there was a positive student teachers especially at the the elementary level well you know your student's gone yeah and they need to be supported academically and so um and then they are especially at the secondary level then the teacher is told this student you know jane smith is going to be out for a number of days please touch base with that student so you can support him or her academically so we don't ever have to share what's going on and in some ways it's a double-edged sword because that student could be out because they had an appendectomy but we wouldn't share the appendectomy either that information and so the teachers at that point can come to their own conclusion which unfortunately sometimes is that they may have coveted and they don't um but at the end of the day if there is a positive student we do let the teachers know you have a positive student that's been in one of your classes okay and dr santa cruz if i can go back to your comments about kind of the perception that teachers have um using some assumptions and some real numbers if we have a high school that has 15 students we have 15 students who are out because they have active cases we then can say times six times two students times six classes times two students so we have another 180 students who are out in quarantine then if we make a further assumption that half of those students half of the 15 have one sibling at the school those siblings are asked to quarantine so there's another seven students so we've quickly gone from 15 positive cases to 202 cases 202 sorry 15 cases to 202 absences for a time period you know if i look at that at a school that has 2 400 students with 15 cases that's 0.6 percent positivity rate but i have 8.4 of my student body who's now missing class and just to clarify you're you're not suggesting that we're corn we're quarantining the siblings of the quarantine students only the positive students correct correct right that's something that's a common misunderstanding yeah no i added seven 15 students added i added seven to that number to get you know so roughly half so we've quickly gone i mean if i'm a teacher and i'm seeing eight point four percent or you know we'll say we'll round it to ten percent if i'm seeing ten percent of my students gone i'm absolutely going to think that covet is widespread we're in and out it's just the natural perception i would think that i i would assume that they would think that where in reality it's not 8.4 it's 0.6 percent all right dr mcguire what i'll do is is i'll just move down to the slide that has all the percentages on it right here and again you can see how i think again you can see how it goes down based on the percentage as the percentage lowers and so i just wanted to give you guys a snapshot of three percent below and and half percents in between uh just so you can have uh information making informed decisions i i think it's worth pointing out you know if you look at like mesquite elementary that's five cases that's if if you're one percent there that's difficult you know that could happen uh real quick and um and so i don't know if you know the same percentage should be applied to every level um you know maybe there's a different percentage for elementary different percentage for junior high different percentage for high school especially according to where it seems we have more cases and so i just want to let you guys think about that and and have more conversations related to that in terms of i have a question about elementary because in the past um in some of our elementary schools we have a uh department wise for fourth sometimes fourth fifth and sixth grade sometimes it's just fifth and sixth grade are we doing that this year or are we just containing jason martin through six into the same classroom because that i think makes a difference um on the number of students that he can talk specifically about that okay good morning so there are less students that are departmentalizing or less schools that are departmentalizing at the elementary level this year there are currently about half of our sixth grades that are departmentalizing but many of them are keeping relatively most of the cohort of students and they're switching just the teacher some of them even aren't uh some of the students aren't even moving the rooms and the teachers are revolving around the room so the three sixth grade teachers are doing that you do have to realize there's still some movement at all elementary schools because of all the pull out programs for reading uh alp ell services and so that kind of differs from campus to campus but they're being very cognizant of that the good thing is in a lot of our special programs is there tends to be less students in those rooms so they're able to very easily social distance so you might have four first graders come in from uh four different uh teachers rooms for a reading program but they can all sit at least six or eight feet away from each other and then go back to their classroom so that there's and of course masks are on as well too so those interactions are safe at that level but there is less departmentalizing at the elementary this year not only partly because of covid which is definitely an issue but a lot of our elementaries right now and the intermediate grades only have two sections per grade or three we have a lot because of the students that went to global or some other venue right now and so when you get down to two sections per grade level it does tend to make departmental departmentalization harder for the teachers all right thank you thank you jason i guess in my question is so in reference to choosing you know trying to come up with this percentage um so what is our purpose in moving from what is our goal what are we hoping happens if we move from in person to hybrid we're hoping to slow it down slow it down even though it's not spreading at the skulls is what we see we haven't we think our mitigation strategies are effective so i'm just trying to see what what do we well i think we go back to the original discussion when we when we started all of this is saying we would go back if the spread you know within the community was larger and so i think this is part of that discussion and and knowing that you know the goal posts have been moved back but the game hasn't changed right yeah i agree i'm just trying to figure out what is our what do we hope to see what happens i want to see that a couple things one i think um less number of students on campus we saw numbers that were lower now i can't say that because we went back numbers went up i numbers went up across the state so there's a different correlation there but i think it it would help mitigate what happens on campus could the numbers go down would they go down could they go up yeah that could happen but i think it's just another mitigation strategy to help uh with with community spread like substantial we're talking about um moderate to substantial spread it's just one more we're trying to put in one more mitigation strategy okay okay okay well and i think i think because we've hit that mark of 100 cases per hundred thousand we really have to consider at this point we don't see that spread in our schools but it could come even even though we have all these mitigation strategies because it's more widespread in the community it may affect us more yeah i but again our goal is to to contain it from transition well so we might see more cases coming to school that are happening somehow out of school but i don't i want it we are what our main purpose and goal is to not have it spread through the school and transition to school and that's what we have to work on and i think that's to me that's what i'm seeing is happening even with you know with the mitigation strategies in place i think that we so far have felt like we are not seeing a single case go you know we haven't been a super spreader event in our schools basically and we're trying to keep that down by not having dances not doing those you know i mean those are the fun things that we all want to do but just during this time in order to keep that community spread from happening and helping our community be safer we're asking people not to do dances not to do big social activities because that has an impact on keeping our schools open and keeping our kids where they can be in the classroom and get educated which we all agree is the most effective way for them to learn yeah to your point this would i think as as we look at our entire community at least the communication i've read and you've read the same communication in large measure there are folks on both sides who are reviewing the data and who are making their own assumptions and drawing their own conclusions regarding that data just as we are this whole threading the needle analogy is simply trying to address both sides of that discussion and letting our community know that we're not blind to either or of the dimensions related to this covid challenge and that we would be ready if we needed to do something and it's a series in my head of what ifs because as i read the communication coming from our community i'm seeing a lot of a whole lot of what ifs what if this happens what are you prepared to do that and then they have a suggestion or what if this doesn't happen and please don't close the schools and please thank you very much for what you've done and on and on in every dimension and i think we need to be prepared to one give our parents and our teachers and our staff advanced notice should we have to do something that abridges what we're currently doing and be able to implement whatever that is when it is time to do that and decide on what the parameters are for doing that implementation so i think that's at least in my head what the goal is of this discussion not sure we're going to reach any conclusions today but it is certainly worthy of the discussion dr mccord right and and again with your question about what the purpose of hybrid is did i get that yeah it's good i so i guess the reason i was thinking that is so if so okay so if we have five students at mesquite elementary so i'm just thinking and that's one percent how what is the rationale what is logical you know if that is one percent does that mean we should should it just be a trigger point one percent boom we're done no matter where you're at we would look at some of those some of those other things you said right that kind of that that makes it a little tricky it does make it so i wonder if we just keep it more to an absolute and we could do that but then the other thing i thought was we just we just went through and explained though how elementaries do have way less typically they're in one class maybe a couple classes so it would be much less um well because you're quarantined i would say because you're not quarantined right as many people so i don't know you might be able to have a little higher case that's what i was wondering maybe that justify at an elementary school whereas um the high school that would be that would be two percent whereas at a high school where you have one percent at campo um you know that could get really high right two or two 200 kids or right so forth that's kind of what i was trying to rationalize and that's the same thing i'm thinking i mean i just was playing with numbers a little bit if i use greenfield elementary off of this chart as an example if i have one percent so i have nine kids who are out because they're covered positive and now i have another 18 again simplifying the model it might be a couple more because of specials but 18 i've got 27 out of 903 i've got three percent of my students who are now out of school if i do the same thing moving up to one and a half i get up to four point three percent by contrast if i take those same two at desert ridge if i take 24 students who are out then times six classes times two you know i ended up i end up with 24 who are out and another 288 who are out because of uh that and i'm i'm up at you know 13 percent of my students are affected and i moved to one and a half percent i'm at almost 20 percent of my students who are affected again not positive but affected by the quarantine and positivity combined that to me puts us in a different model if i'm missing 20 percent of my students how effective am i being in person what impact am i having on teachers reaching out to 20 of their students on a case-by-case individual basis trying to support them so there comes a practical element as those numbers move up that's different at the elementary level because of the compounding effect of the multiplication than it is at high school level so and junior high because also they have the same schedule yeah yeah so now i i didn't do it for junior high because it's the same yeah i agree with which experience did you use i used desert ridge high school as an example um and i used gilbert elementary but what percent oh it was i used one and then one and a half and it goes from 13 to 19.5 percent of the kids affected in that simple math and dr mccord your your recommendation is that we my recommendation is to use a percentage i didn't specify which one right but your recommendation is that we use a percentage for our schools as opposed to the dashboard right i think you know and and we've used this analogy it's it's i i think we have to concentrate on those campuses that might be having coveted issues for whatever case and and i don't want to i want to penalize the least amount of people as possible if if things are being managed in a in an elementary community very well and they're not seeing anything happening at their school i want them to continue because i know that's important you know i wrestle with that quite a bit too just because you look at the numbers for a community you look for because we are a community you look for the numbers for a county um but i i also have talked to many many staff members and the the the difference in the child today as opposed to beforehand is is vastly different and and much more positive and so if we can keep that going uh i think it's important for our kids well i would say if our if our number of cases per hundred thousand residents really skyrocketed we'd probably have to have another conversation and that's that's as long as we're keeping the beauty yes is we can call this in a 24-hour period sit down and have this conversation and i agree i mean because but the other part is if we have the community behind us to work on this and and just just an example i i guess i'm a news junkie because i listen to the news all the time but you know a study out of the university of washington they did some modeling if 95 percent of people comply with a mask wearing a mask when they're out and about will save a hundred thousand lives by the end of february so just that's what they have modeled um but we you know if our community can get behind us and help us keep these kids in school because i personally think that our number one priority in the state should have been getting our schools reopened not our bars our restaurants i mean i do understand we need businesses and people have to make a living but our schools are our future our kids and their the education they receive today has a huge impact on the next 100 years probably 80 years and so our our schools need to be a priority and when people think about what they're doing because this is a individual responsibility and it's a community responsibility and we have to make all those parts work together so that we can focus on keeping our kids in school and yes they may not to get to do all the things they want but i think getting their education and being there in the classroom which we know is the best learning model for almost every student and and i'm sure there are a lot of students who are online right now who would like to come back when they feel like it's safer so i just think that's a huge priority for us and that we'd like to see a priority in our community in all of this i i i do worry about staff i mean it is it's it's hard for them it's it's it's a challenge and um you know i think teaching working at a school is is hard enough and then you add this to it and the level of anxiety goes up and so um i worry about that and i i i worry that um you know that they don't feel supported or that they don't have what they need and so we need to be doing as good a job as we can to make sure that those things are in place and um but again whether on a campus of 50 people 20 may not have any concerns about any of this and 10 may and it doesn't matter whether you do or don't that's how you feel and you own that and that's that's real to you so and if it's real to you it's got to be real to me and so we have to we just have to be mindful of that your feelings are your feelings we shouldn't be um making less of somebody's feelings if that's the way they feel we need to help them to work through that and support them in the best way we can dr mccord the concept you've proposed here at least for us to discuss also helps us localize and individualize and it gives that grouping of people who are in and around that particular school or set of schools the opportunity to really drill down on their own behaviors their own issues related to how they interact to help us keep that school open so i appreciate what you're what you're trying to do there i'd like to tag on to that too um yesterday i listened to the the governor's press conference when he was asked at the i didn't see the whole thing but he was asked at the end what educational leaders he had talked to and he evaded the question or dodged it and after the conference the state school superintendent came out with a statement that they were not consulted at all aea has come out with a statement that they were not consulted asba came out with a statement that they were not consulted in the arizona school administrators so those are the four biggest um agencies or associations that have to do with education and so you know for me the frustration is that that things change and and we get we get mixed messages and yet we're we are in charge of 33 000 students and 4 500 employees and you know i i i think everybody knows how i felt all along um i could live with this i think this is a a give giving a percentage of our school district because of of what we're doing if we come up with the percentage and we know that we're going to go to hybrid if we if we hit that percentage at each school but i'm going to go back to what mrs humphrey says if all of a sudden we have an uptick in our community then i think we have to immediately go back and and just i listened yesterday to the um head of the university of utah medical center and they were the sheet i can't remember a man or a woman i should be able to remember that but i don't um saying that that they're getting to a point where they may have to start deciding who gets to come to the hospital so old people like me you know might be i'm not taking you because there's a young person that has coveted and you know what a decision that that has to be for anybody to have to make so i think that if we start seeing in arizona an uptick and i think the governor said yesterday we were 13th lowest at this point which is a good thing um but it could that could change next week i agree and and again i i think that would be prudent of all of us if if we notice some things just go out of whack um that we sit down and have another conversation about what to do next and um i i have two questions because i um i i think we're having a really good discussion and i think that you know making some benchmarks of when we might go to hybrid and maybe even when we might go back to virtual is a great idea but i what about transportation if we have some schools that are hybrid um and some schools that are not is that going to have an effect on transportation or not at all it's good to go not at all because they're running the same routes okay all right the other question i have and this is my concern is if we put a school back into hybrid or back into um virtual because of circumstances we're an open enrollment state i i am concerned about families jumping from one school to another and if a school is closed because of the number of cases that's not really beneficial to be taking people and putting them in a different school that that is a concern so i i'd like we chatted about that um the other day people hop in schools because something's closed down i get that but i also understand that [Music] open enrollment we're we're going to contain our classrooms to the smallest number we possibly can so we have the ability to deny that based on a pandemic okay because i i want to keep people safe and i just can't do that if people are fleeing from one place to another that makes it worse so thank you i've got a couple of comments if i can you know first of all i i think i need to acknowledge my fellow board members you know if we go back to july we adopted a process that was a hard-fought emotional compromise with the intent that we wanted students back in school and and i know that my fellow board members gave a lot uh to get to that compromise and we said we would follow a set of metrics that we were not at that point published we didn't know what we were adopting in empowering us to go back to school we said we were going to follow the health department metrics so it does become you know a little bit frustrating when we finally have gone through a lot of uh pain to understand something that we adopted without even fully knowing what it was when we adopted and now with no notice or no real explanation for those the app the metrics themselves haven't changed but the application of making decisions based on those metrics has has been changed no i'm not necessarily opposed to that because we get new information and we've got to be able to change in a pandemic based on new information but the lack of explanation is is is concerning i wish i had more information as to why input and so the having said that as a preface i acknowledge that we have all been focused on keeping schools open and safe you know none of us want to risk people's health we but we recognize all the the mental health the physical health the the covid case etc what i like about this approach even though we haven't yet said on numbers is that we're trying to keep people safe we're trying to keep people open keep schools open but we're mitigating the risk as it happens in a specific geographic location at a specific school if we go back to hybrid now one thing i would suggest is that we say if we're going to go back to hybrid we're going to do it for a two week period you know we i think that helps with the open enrollment if parents know oh this is going to be two weeks so this is going to be three weeks whatever is appropriate whatever we we feel is appropriate but that prevents the outbreak from spreading to other schools and hopefully keeps it contained within the community so we're the the isolated school community instead of the wider community we're going to have to face another criteria is what happens if following the current standard of metrics we apparently now hit all three red before the question was all in the back of our mind we had decided what happens if one hits red now it's following those guidelines so we're trying to find interim step to address issues before we get there and hopefully prevent it from getting there so that that's kind of my feeling i know that's not going to satisfy everybody on either side we're going to get feedback on both sides but we're trying to find that middle ground that maintains a compromise maintains safety and health and keeps our kids in school and we hope that our community will recognize that effort and support i just moved over to the next page just and to go along a little bit with what you just said there i would recommend a minimum of 14 days two school weeks i guess is the best way to put it and monitor uh you know the active cases on the campus if if it hasn't gone down or gone up based on the next you know the following week the week before they're supposed to go back i mean i i then we extend it i mean that's i think that's i think that's logical more than anything but but i think you have to monitor that so i don't know if this is too much specifics but are you thinking like basically wednesday we have our dashboard come out our district number of cases would you say go hybrid by friday go hybrid by monday i so along this whole journey that we've been on since march we've learned a few things yeah and um don't start a hybrid model the day after labor day especially if you know you're a through l so am i right everybody yeah okay um so i would try to start it on a monday um that of course you know there may be a holiday somewhere in there coming up but i would try to do it that was so wednesday we see it we look at it pretty a little deeper just to make sure and put principles on notice and then that's where we're at thursday we make sure staff knows parents know students know that on monday we'll be going to hybrid and um for the next two weeks and continue to the communication with that school and community as we lead up to the end of that the oh sorry the people those who have been quarantining for the last week or two yeah and those who've been out with positive i mean it's it's going to be a long thing but it's just what it is so yeah timing may not be good for some of those of their quarantine [Music] so i was just going to make a recommendation in case it's a monday holiday because that will probably happen and i i don't know if this will work well or not but it's just my idea that if we start with l3m on tuesday that we take the a through a through l on wednesday and not have that right one day of open and then thursday friday right that would just be my just a supplement yes monday or whatever everybody gets two days in school it would make the cleaning process i would imagine a little bit harder but um a little bit and um might be some confusion but that comes down to communication right it's always that will they know that they're supposed to come to school on wednesday or will we you know i mean we want to keep it as simple as possible but i can see that scenario happening again very easily because there's a lot of monday holidays yeah so yeah that's my suggestion were you were we able to get a ballpark figure on the number of kids that have been quarantined i'm sorry i i i won't yeah how many kids we've already had been quarantined here well i wouldn't you know what just just i would just go with a more pure number than anything because i don't think that in every case there has been people that have had maybe if you just could have it for next week okay yeah because i'm sorry that i know that's a lot oh you're good information to try to get dr mccord [Music] sorry as we as we move through the presentation uh and we get to a spot where we think we're we're ready to do something uh i would suggest that we kind of back off and hold off a little bit go a little slow and let's look at a framework these are all this is all verbage words on a page and i think it might be appropriate to add to the words on a page with a graphic that says if we're in hybrid here's when we're going to notify here's when we're going to implement and here's how long we're going to be there and here's a target date for return or something on that order if anything i've said makes sense but yeah i think as we pull all the words together that we create a flowchart we create a framework that people can see and follow a road map so that when we notify and we say you are moving to that they can just look at the chart and say oh that's what we're going to do and that's for families that's for teachers and that's for staff so that they can prepare their headspace and their actual implementation appropriately does that make sense yes and something visual is a lot easier sometimes to grasp than reading an email and trying to put the words right so interpreting what's being said we've not made a decision or any kind of vote but it sounds like we're kind of reaching a consensus around an approach here we have not set discuss specific numbers in there one of the things i i believe dr santa cruz brought up but i may be remembering wrong because it's been long enough ago in the conversation what about activities do we measure activities you know if we go back to a hybrid i know your response was i would keep those activities open unless there's a case do we set metrics specific to those i i think it's been working we've only had to shut down i think two activities at this point on a temporary basis i think that i wouldn't set metrics for that necessarily just because there's so many different sports and different numbers of people and health services would have to go through and and diagnosed how are these being spread and so i would just leave it up to uh the district on that one doesn't that aia have some guidelines as well they have some guidelines too yeah two for that's less than 25 25 more more than three or more quarantining for x amount of days so i'm saying we've been following those as well as i think we actually responded faster than the aia guidelines would have required us to do but in doing so in doing so it actually allows a return to those activities faster than the aaa guidelines would have allowed us had we waited to hit the ai headlines so what i find interesting on this comparison that you did with going from three to one is it's all the same schools nothing changes if we do one percent or three percent it's all still the same seven schools am i reading that correctly i don't know what you're doing you know yes it's just an example yeah yeah it's all the same yeah we would have one for every school right but this is this just an example or do is this just an example this those are the actual numbers of those schools right yeah but so that's a real example of campo that's not the cases that have happened though no no no this is what would happen if there's three percent we haven't had near that many cases at any of our schools no no okay then i'm this is not the actual numbers no no nobody's exactly which which actual numbers are you talking about this is a hypothetical if we had three percent of cases that would be 57 right students and staff at campo then if that's our best metric then we shut it down okay going back to page 15.

that's not what we have no no so what we have what what is what is actual on that page in terms of right now are the numbers of students and staff that are on that campus so so the 57 is what is three percent of so that would be the numbers where are the actual numbers then there's none in the presentation there's none in the present it's on the dashboard okay so depend let's say we went to three percent how many schools approximately would that effect none at this point so far none would okay so far i just want to know with how many so far none would even be at one percent none would go to as of today right yesterday right even in the past if we even looked over the past weeks since we've done it none have had that many cases that even one percent and the reason i kept picking on desert ridge is they're the closest that where one percent would be 24 active cases they currently on the dashboard have 15 active cases and that that's that's why i was picking on that school versus versus any other just because they're closer to that number than anybody else so as of today we would have no schools that would qualify even under one percent correct all right and i think that's an important feature miss uj because those who might pull this from our website these are all example hypotheticals these numbers except for the student population at those schools the numbers on the percentage column do not exist currently and i think that's important for the public to know because we certainly don't want people taking this presentation and running and saying look you have 57 students who are active on campus x right no that is just not the fact we don't have any at this point these that are significant enough to warrant any concern these are the benchmarks that we may use if we decide on that percentage correct and what those numbers could look like if we use that percentage yes um so that's that's some hybrid talk and and we can circle back to that and get some talk more specifics and just about going back to online um again the original benchmarks uh set up if we were reading one of the three areas we could should consider moving back online and then the new benchmark said three and then in the revised safely returned to in-person instruction that was revised last night yeah at some point yesterday afternoon late in that area it says a county has a county has one benchmark in red in the red category for two or more weeks even if different benchmarks schools should consult with their local health department to determine whether to prepare to transition back to virtual learning with on-site support services with for example based on community level data a local health department may make a recommendation for a school or district to move to virtual instruction even if only one metric is in the substantial transmission category that last piece where i started with for example was not in the document that was revised i guess on october 22nd so i think this is in response and they changed a graphic to match what the county looks like now this is the graphic that we have the one that they had in the revised one was the one we've been using from the beginning so just to clarify that um you know i do predict that one of the three you know benchmarks probably the number of uh per 100 000 will will hit red i mean we we're going up and as i see you know a daily tally coming in from you know the number of cases in our state you know today it was 1500 so that number is increasing and so i think that'll directly impact that so we would have to what i would recommend on this or when we would consider uh we do it as a district again do we do it on uh per site and and i have a recommendation but at the same time and i know this is talking out of both sides of my mouth i mean if if it if we got into a bad situation where it blew the percentage that whatever we determine uh the active cases and we just see those coming in more and more every day for whatever reason we may just want to shut that one school down and we've seen that across the state at times i mean we're a larger district and so maybe if a high school shuts down in one district that that's their only high school but looking at that but at the same time if we notice it throughout the whole district i think we again going back to conversations we had earlier i think we circled back up in this room and make that decision uh whether it's an all-district thing or not so this is more of a a tricky one it's the next logical step after hybrid obviously um but there's times i think if we're going to go online i'd love to do it on a school-by-school basis but at the same time i think that it might end up it would be if we had to go to that degree it might be the entire district so that's kind of how i feel i feel like if i feel comfortable saying for sure if if we meet all three benchmarks it are substantial if i'll move to substantial for sure that we should prepare to transition back online and consult with our county health department which we've been consulting with yes regularly so we're getting regular feedback often correct and they the county has not suggested that we go hybrid or close any schools at this point even with the cases that we've had they just go through the point of quarantining and then continuing our mitigation strategies and different things so we have been consulting with the county this is this whole discussion is above and what we can do like you said in steps before we um you know before other measures take place so i i think we should do what you know what this a lot the latest things i've said is if so here we are now yeah as the county goes we've now seen our district is insubstantial for this week let's keep in mind watch the county and see what happens next week and then let's um watch with consult with our county and see where we're at and that's and i think what you're talking about uh is the next bullet is if the county has all three benchmarks in the red category adhs recommends schools transition to virtual learning in consultation with their local health department right and that's where sheila talked about in terms of consulting with people that contradicts what was originally said so that's that's that's the difference there yeah i think but so that's i to me that's like a definite is it yeah that that should be uh then we're we're gonna be going virtual we'll talk to the county department but we'll be going virtual probably i think the whole district should that right right because we'll be back to a substantial spread within the community hopefully it would just be for a couple weeks i think we should have a return plan in place right not like an unending you know month we can have a date on it but have yeah we'll have um we'll have metrics on it right should we talk about that again yeah well and then and then the next question it's almost like here we are back to we had that available for free for a while so what would be the circumstances so the executive order i believe is still in effect okay and so we would have to provide on-site learning but also with the understanding that with the staff that's available we don't have a lot of staff available we wouldn't have bus drivers available to come and help out like they did in the past or food service workers so that number on those campuses would be extremely limited okay we don't know the exact number yet but well i i do think we need to communicate that sure that there might be spaces but they are limited um because because they're you know more people are trying to get back to work we may not have people at home to care for those children so correct um our elementation we have to think about change the motto that's a huge consideration yeah dr mcclure may clarify something you said in that response if we go back to online we'll have on-site services but right when you say on you said on-site learning we won't be doing teaching and instruction right we will have on-site support on-site support is what i think he uses yeah for the exact same i just i just don't want anyone to misunderstand that that if you drop your kids off teachers are going to be there by that word learning yeah right and we won't be holding class right right and i would request in the event that we consider in the event that we have a full shutdown that as we look at a reopening model that we graduate as we did this time that we go from total online to a hybrid and then to in-person that would be my recommendation as that we consider that as we if we ever hit that juncture and just some final thoughts for me the state county district of course everything everything's increasing again a plan moving forward i think it's beneficial for all involved students staff and families sticking to our mitigation strategies is paramount and i and and it's really easy to get lack of days again a lot of this and so um i know our principals i know our teachers i know our support staff are continuing to push these things and and even with them they get a little coveted fatigue i i understand that but we have to stay diligent with that and what we do off campus will have a positive or negative effect on what happens on campus and so we have to be mindful not just of on campus but what we're doing as community members so that's kind of that board members we've engaged all along is there anything else that you would want to direct request seek information regarding the presentation i i would like to know i mean i know that miss frost is working on it but i would like to know how many kids we've had to quarantine um because as we pick those percentages the number who have to quarantine makes has a real impact and so i would rather hold off and maybe i don't know make that decision at our brief board meeting about the percentages although we're probably going to be in red for at least one thing next week hopefully it'll go down but who knows but um because i think you know whether we pick one percent and i i do think um i could run you some scenarios yes i i think just um at the elementary school where there are more in cohorts maybe it could be a little higher percentage because we won't have to quarantine as many and then maybe at the junior high in high school uh a lower percentage but to me kind of knowing how many people have to quarantine makes a difference whether i pick one and a half percent or two percent or or one percent um that would make a difference to me on my decision okay other consideration at least from my point of view is as we move to the brief board meeting here momentarily it is certainly possible for us to engage in crafting emotion and doing something with that it is also possible because we know it's going to happen anyway to give our community an opportunity to weigh in via email to staff in terms of suggestions or thoughts relative to what those who have chosen to listen have heard or read or believe and when we get to our meeting next wednesday that will also give us an opportunity to individually craft a motion that we think might fit our needs for next wednesday to act upon relative to this kind of uh plan so those are just my thoughts they're not set in stone i'm just sharing those with you and thinking out loud anything else for the good of the order relative to the presentation and what you have heard and participated in this morning one other point i think i'd like to see some language around the community's substantial spread and if we're in red for those different categories and what that would mean so what do you what do you mean well i mean um i mean i could probably find it in here if well if then yeah if if if we're um if we reach these metrics then what then we'll go everyone will go virtual we'll consult with the public health department what what according so here's here's my question okay are you talking according to the county health department or gilbert public schools because if you're talking gilbert public schools that's what this discussion is about well that's what i'm saying i i think um i because i'm a visual person i would like to see something in writing this exchange that we had with miss wood about um if we go red in all three metrics then we're going back online is there another case where we would go back online um that again that would be up to you as a governing board so i think if you if you need to talk that out a little bit more then then might be the time to do that now i guess the the interesting part of that is is even at this point it's barely over the 100 but it is substantial at this point and yet in our schools were not seen i do appreciate that we have this local data in our schools now it's not as if we're seeing this yeah you know i'm just saying so i to me i i kind of like that we have this idea of the local numbers whatever we decide on that give us trigger points of saying you know what at this school now it's it's become an issue of basically if you want to say substantial at this school right there's enough people with it at this school that we need to look and try and make another mitigation strategy um i would prefer to do it that way and always in consultation with our health our county which we're always in consultation with they make other recommendations and we need to work with those and you know figure out figure that out but um to me that's where i think is what we're doing i think that that is the mitigation strategy until we hit for sure all three substantial that was my thought well and state and county agencies health agencies i should say have really left it up to us they so so far and and stated clearly that what we are sharing with you are guidelines uh they're they're not set in stone they're pretty concerning when you look at them but the ultimate decision rests with this board according to what i understand relative to the state and county health agencies and the governor for that matter well i would say um just it was referenced early in dr mccord's presentation but the percentage of covet-like illness there's a lot of disagreement about what that number is going to mean and whether it would ever be read because of the way things are or are not reported correct thank you ms humphreys mr carr dr sanders i would i would i would agree with your your assessment with the caveat that we've been told that if a school has an outbreak or whatever the the county may step in school specific and say hey we want you to take this additional measure this additional measure up to and including they could ask us to close the school correct um and when i say ask they would essentially require us to i would also highlight for those you know as we we're talking numbers of one percent one and a half percent i'm i'm kind of assuming we're going to fall somewhere in that range but that that's just based on the discussion um i did have a discussion with miss frost uh i guess it was last week earlier this week i can't remember when when there's a discussion that she commented to me said normally in an outbreak situation flu outbreak uh you know whatever other illness outbreak the county declares an outbreak at when it affects 10 percent am i remembering that number right from our conversation yeah so normally we're talking when it reaches 10 of our population so in this case the county has defined it as two cases that they can't contract trace outside of and the state has defined it that way as well not just this county so a much stricter definition of what an outbreak is and we are talking about taking mitigation steps at a much much earlier case than we would ever consider taking um you know that statement's probably going to frustrate some in our community and it's going to frustrate some that we're not being even more proactive in going at a half a percent or a quarter percent we understand that we're trying to find balance thank you for that mr carr i i i i i think getting back to what we're all saying is that that i think that the um percent positive or a percent of cases is probably the most important criteria to go on as opposed to the you know like something like the colder like symptoms because i think that could happen to anybody any day jill getting back to you when your question a little bit so what i'm hearing you say is you'd like to see something or in order for us to go completely online as a school district we need three reds in all categories well i i guess what i want to understand is is what that is and i guess that's i mean that is our decision but um i don't i don't know how to judge that because i i when i've watched this through the weeks of from it's from starting from march and check the website and and looked at all of the data that i've looked at i always felt that when we got to 100 cases per 100 000 residents that was a concerning that was a concerning benchmark too and percent positivity in testing you know let's all run it down and get tested we hadn't i haven't mentioned it but we did have an email from the university of arizona looking for people teachers and staff to be a part of a study where they could self-administer a covent test for free and just keep track of and if they got sick share their symptoms or whatever i mean that came into our board and i think that's something we should pursue looking at and encourage people to sign up for but um when i looked at this that hundred thousand hundred cases per hundred thousand was kind of my benchmark not positivity not covet-like illness and we've already hit that but when we look at our schools that spread is not in our schools and so it to me i'm struggling because that's what i've used as my benchmark this entire time but it's not affecting our schools at the same rate as it is in the wider community and i would say you know if you look at the arizona department of health website um it's the 20 to 44 that are the most cases and then it's the like i think it's 44 to 54 or something like that that is the second most although the number of cases the kit for 20 and under has gone up a lot as well so i i guess what i'm trying to say is that even though we have hit that benchmark that have i've been watching all this time and we're in the red on that one category that's not in our schools and i think um i think maybe looking at the percentages but just understanding that that wider community spread may have an impact on the number of cases that we see within our schools and maybe some language to define that a little better i mean because i as um well i i followed will humble previous um director of the department of health for the state of arizona and he has totally said that that coped like illness number will probably always stay green because they're not reporting it in a a continual way they're not required to report it and so it's kind of a flimsy number so that's where i'm i'm struggling because the benchmarks that we have been given it's really hard to know and i've i've relied on the 100 per 100 000 residents and here we are in red but it's not showing up in our schools and that's my conundrum right um so i i guess i live to me i would and maybe i need to go home and think about it for a while but to come up with wording or an understanding of where do we get with that cases per hundred thousand when do when does that get sufficient that we say okay now it's a concern to our schools um and that's that's what i'm kind of struggling with is that clearer a little bit yeah a little bit i don't think i miss humphreys you bring up some very good points like none of the metrics are without their flaws you know i mean percent positivity it's a self-selected group who's going and getting tested it doesn't necessarily represent the population at large it represents generally is skewed towards those who are feeling symptoms so they're going and getting tested the number per hundred thousand is highly highly volatile based on the number of people being tested yeah so if if our perce even holding our percent positivity um equal if the number of people getting tested doubles then that number doubles uh so it each one of those independently has some major flaws in how we interpret it and you're you're exactly right in your comments so it's that's why we kind of have to look at them in totality and we have to understand what's behind it in driving the numbers but i agree that it is concerning that they're going up yeah the concern it's concerning and that's why we're having this discussion because we're saying what are how are we going to address this and how does this happen because jumped up to 149 cases per hundred thousand like they went up almost 50 or 60 cases in one week right well and remember though also i wanted to just clarify the where 100.3 and as a district boundary the county was still below that at this point yes how they reported it so it might change as well but i just wanted to be clear on that so counties at 84.

right right yeah which is moderate the first time we've been worse than the county so and but we have seen fluctuations too so we'll see but we should know more but again let's i i'm with you that that's concerning and that's why we're having this discussion exactly what and that's a national trend yes a slow as well as a state trend we're seeing those occur and there are all kinds of recommendations and and commentary from the medical professionals out there as to why and hitting the winter months and the vacation times and the holidays and all of that factors in so the numbers are are scary when you look at them in total when you drill down and take a look at how it's impacting our organization and that being classrooms teachers and staff we're not seeing the same thing the numbers do not correspond and so there's there's the issue and that's why we're having this discussion and thank you miss wood for saying that anything else for this discussion dr mccord thank you for pulling it all together and getting it there uh i look forward to seeing that framework that we're going to develop so that we can move forward with a plan board members anything else if there isn't and i'm going to call for adjournment of the work study and move to the brief board meeting so i'll adjourn the work study session and we'll move to item four the brief board meeting and item 4.01 is roll call miss wilson would you please indulge us dr charles santa cruz here miss larry wood here mr reed carr here michelle yujetti here miss jill humphreys here mr president all board members are present you have a quora thank you mr wilson action item number five and that's item 5.01 discussion and possible action regarding the approval of methods to use for school to return to hybrid or online learning dr mccord anything you want to add no i just think it goes along with our discussion that we just had during the work study what i'm hearing is that we'll reconvene maybe probably on wednesday with some more but that's up to the discussion of you guys right now board members uh need a motion for item 5.01 i'm going to motion that we um postpone until our next board meeting and and can sit reconsider this and and vote on it at our next board meeting 34 thank you miss humphries is there a second a second thank you mrs woods is there a discussion 5.01 mr i think based on everything that we've talked about today if you can come up with the 50 000 things we've asked you to do between now and wednesday so that we can make an informed decision and and the right decision for the safety of our students and our parents and our families and our teachers what i would like to do is come back with um just like a metrics or a matrix that says here's what this looks like has some options for you because i i don't know where everybody sits on those percentages to go to hybrid you know specifically so i'll give you some ideas of what that looks like based on some of the examples here today as well as maybe changing the percentages at different levels so you can see that and could we have a like an idea of which schools might be close to to hitting hitting one of the percentages i my only concern was we it felt like there was some urgency in holding this today do we feel like we have we just wanted to get it started and get some information started i just don't want to not make a motion forward if you feel like we need to no i don't start moving forward as we've kind of analyzed it we feel like we're i think we're we're in a good spot and i think next wednesday uh will give us an even better idea i'll update us on whether dashboard is from that morning and based on that information that comes out that might that might be something to where one of those schools indicates based on one of the models that's adopted to go to hybrid i'm not i'm not sure of that but you know it's it's only friday so well i was going to say well the county won't put anything else on thursday we can somebody who's good at data can maybe divine where we might be on thursday to talk about it wednesday night read i i track that probably that probably twice a week off the live data um i'm happy to share with what with what numbers we might be on thursday but we'll know our our own school numbers we know them daily correct we will know those yet well we update those every wednesday correct okay you do know them every day you know them every day yeah they come in some drop off some add on so usually it's somewhat of a wash okay any other go ahead mr crack i'm not sure with the motion being to postpone this maybe this is discussion for next time but because it's not i'm not sure it's directly related to this but would there be a criteria where we say if we hit a certain percentage or if we heard it hit a certain percentage for a two-week period and i'm saying percentage students active cases you know if i'm just trying to be a little more flexible i don't know that that's the right way but if we're at you know one and a half percent and i'm plucking numbers out of the air just off of this one and a half percent at a given point or if we're above one percent for two weeks um you know i don't know what the right answer is i don't know that any of us know that there is a right answer but but uh i i wouldn't be adverse to even some suggestions like that well i can say if you mean if we were hybrid and it was still going up maybe moving to online i'm assuming the the the metric is to go online right now we're saying again just one percent would be you know 19 students at campo if we're above 19 active cases two weeks in a row we go to hybrid but if we hit one and a half percent which takes us to 28 then we go on then then we go online based on the one that is exactly what i was i mean trying to and i don't know the one percent and the one and a half are the right numbers i mean i feel like honestly i feel like we're pulling numbers from the air because we don't have guidance where that is but the intent here is again we want to keep schools open or as open as possible by that i mean hybrid we want kids in the classroom wherever possible and again i i would agree with uh miss humphries those may be different numbers at a high school level because of the potential spread than it is in elementary but uh um just just some ideas as as we formulate a recommendation that i'm sure we'll then throw darts at that recommendation come wednesday yeah and it'll give you an opportunity at least in your head craft the language for emotion for next wednesday given the fact that when we crafted our original motion that took us four hours so it got better though it did get better got better time i wouldn't know i voted against it well it was it was an active lesson in democracy for sure any other commentary if not we have a motion before us and the motion is to postpone action on approval of a method to use school to return to hybrid online learning uh is there anyone who understands it differently if not then the motion is before you and those in favor of 5.01 and the postponement of please signify by saying i i all those opposed the same motion carries five zero we're now at item six six point zero one is a motion to adjourn is there a motion so moved thank you miss humphries is there a second second second has been there thank you mr eugenie any discussion no discussion then we will vote on adjournment all those in favor of adjourning this brief board meeting please signify saying aye aye those opposed the same motion carries five zero thank you for those of you who are watching on live stream thank you for those of you who attended here in person we are adjourned you

so uh Nate depending on how they do that why don't we go ahead and'll do some announcements on the on the players who will be on the court this morning all right so for Rock Creek we're going to have number one Owen arol number two Graham righten hour number three Gregory craft number five Jackson brandan number 11 Jacob Huffman number 12 Patrick Strickland number 15 Gabe Wilmont number 20 Joby Levens number 22 Drew hofinger number 23 Tucker gorle number 24 Reed uh kuster yep and number 25 Grady nickam number 33 Aaron leer and we'll get to the Mount Healthy group here at our next break looks like Rock Creek got the tip number five up no [Applause] good and Mount Healthy will go ahead and set their offense against Rock Creek's [Applause] Zone Owen on the perimeter back to Graham no on the wrong side here [Applause] back to number two Dean kleffman resets the offense trying to figure out where the openings are in that two3 zone into big number 52 up with the shot and that's good Albert Marsh and just like that Rock Creek is down the floor that is some quick speed right there there that was a real nice pass down low wasn't it Nate yeah and you know if you can get your your big game established under ofne that's going to open it up for Shooters number five up with the shot no good rebound by number 12 out of [Applause] [Music] bounds and Mal healthy will go ahead and take the ball down the floor Graham prer setting the offense getting a good screen there and up again out of bounds you can tell what Mount healthy's philosophy will be here too get it into the big guy underneath and let him do his thing shot number 12 up no good offensive rebounds number three up with the shot that's Gregory craft nice pass by the big man there number 32 says I have something to match that with Will Hellwig up with the shot looks like Mount Healthy is in their own version of The Zone perhaps a one two2 number 22 with the offensive rebounds couple of quick rule things here to let you know the boys do shoot from the 15ft free throw line and number 22 Drew hinger shows you how easy that is looks like we have a Timeout on floor it's always getting a nice uh swish on your first of two yes yes indeed what a beautiful sound in this gym on this Saturday morning get a little bit of time here let's see if we can't get through some of these Mount Healthy Eagles we have um Isaiah Smith number 33 we have Albert Marsh number 52 Dean kleffman number two Jaden Lloyd number 40 Graham ker number one Landon rinet number 12 number 11 Coulson Lush number 14 diesel Craig number 32 will Hellwig 20 IC and leggings number 42 Tanner juwel and number Connor R darte Miss shot up again good shot fake number five up no good number 24 with the offensive rebound shot goes up and again kuster has been very active so far down for the Rock Creek Bulldogs the big man we heard from coach Matt Wallace that he would definitely be active and he's showing that early in the game first one's up oh bangs it right in [Applause] there and I can tell you right now if I was uh Mount Healthy coach one thing I'd be a little bit concerned about is that Rock Creek seems to be owning the offensive boards second shots up and [Applause] good and we got a little bit of full court pressure here full court pressure in the ebl league is allowed as long as you're not up by more than 10 [Applause] points you know speaking of full court pressure your Southside Mustangs have got quite a full-court press don't they well we we do okay um they like to get after it and um you know we work hard they work hard and you know just defense is something that you have to love over love do it pretty well oh number two it's an over and back call there that might just be some of those first game Jitters trying to orient yourself on the court mat healthy comes out in their one two2 zone number five up with the shot no good good some Rock Creek there's that pressure again balls up and good all right so this is not a timeout by the coaches but this is part of E's experiment this year with a running clock and the five minute rule so it is an officials timeout for us to make substitutions balls in down the floor Rock Creek stays in her two three Zone and they're going to DARE number 11 to take that shot oh and he gets the offensive rebound hard for the ball way to fight for it shots up and good oh my [Applause] goodness that offensive rebound led to that opportunity right there try to punch it inside number 40 is down the floor he's going to drive it in draw the [Applause] contact Jaden lyd is at the line just a little strong on that first free throw and we got Rock Creek on the Move sloppy pass there they got picked up good thought though oh look at that what do we have oh yes indeed number 20 tried to draw the charge tell you Joby if we were in the NBA Joby would probably be asking for the coach's Challenge on that cuz I think he was right there there we go and it's a tie ball game with two and A2 minutes to play in the first quarter all right Mount Healthy number 11 good deflection good steal there's number 40 for the shot even though he was behind the three-point line the E does not recognize the three-point shots [Applause] in a little bit of trouble good steel and deflection number 30 is down oh good Court Vision there and we got good hustle right there jump ball our first jump ball of the Saturday [Applause] morning let's see here what will Mount Healthy have planned right underneath their basketall Rock Creek stays in their two3 [Music] [Applause] Zone there we go oh hang on now oh and as you said coach you know obviously they've had some time for practice but it is maybe a a little bit of first game Jitters yeah and just Orient orienting yourself here on the floor uh you know you play and practice in your own gym and then having to be somewhere else [Applause] oh again I tell you what both teams are wanting to get up and down the floor you can't fault them for wanting to push the offense and push the tempo of the game quick substitution all right 38 seconds left shots up no good I'm going to tell you Rock Creek has found a way to own the boards number 23 Tucker gorley 15 seconds left in the first quarter final possession most likely two good one oh and they couldn't get it off before the [Applause] Buzzard well we start this game or finish this quarter just like we started the game tied up 7 to S here are Mount Healthy Eagles [Music] something different with the uh chair this year most squads would carry players 11 or 12 uh but because of our covid situation uh We've split that in half so tonight cheering for the Mount Healthy Eagles is uh Jaden Felician uh Elena Higgins uh Natalia Romas Perez Macy robinet and Kaye Wallace coach you've spoken to a couple of things that are we're doing differently you know as a coach as well as a teacher you know what are your thoughts on how how we're getting off to the start here in E with um obviously a different time with covid-19 well I think first and foremost and I think I think every coach will say we're just we're blessed to be able to play um and now we are we're just trying to learn how to to coach and adjust some of the things we've always been able to do you know are different um you know going through the line for example exle at the end of the game clapping hands uh telling the other team what a great job they've done um that's different um obviously you're the host as well yeah every day so that's got to change some things with practice as well right wait we talking about practice yeah we're talking about practice all right so you know again it's a sacrifice that that we are we are willing to make so that you know 10 other teams can enjoy this um we're figured it out and I I told our princip Jeff bachmeier assistant principal Kathy Jackson that will probably have this whole thing figured out um probably that week of December 14th when everything last that's pretty much the last week uh and again number 24 [Applause] yeah look for number 24 Reed to step in there yeah he's trying to get that he's already got the space cleared out there for a potential [Applause] [Music] rebound and looks like rock Creeks changed up their defensive philosophy looks like they are now matched up manto man and now back into their two3 Zone alignment swarming defense from the Bulldogs shots up and good number five Jax [Music] brandan more full court pressure there looks like Mount Healthy handled it pretty [Applause] easily uh-oh oh boy he didn't get both feet across that was close all right so tell you what with Mal healthy would they they've had success is they can swing the ball and get the ball to the other side of the Zone make the defense [Applause] shift tell you you'll have those purus of the game that cringe at the sight of elementary kids playing Zone I was just thinking you know how long Nate has Zone been allowed in ebl well let's see I'm in year 11 and it it took place before that um and what was happening was is that a lot of the kids who play aou were seen Zone ah and so that decision I well maybe 15 16 years ago they decided to go ahead and um let the teams play [Applause] zone tells you how old I am cuz I remember when I played elementary basketball we were not allowed to play zone right and you know it has its advantages and disadvantages that's number 22 beats everybody down the floor there's Drew hinger turning on the afterburners there yeah hofinger has definitely been active on both sides of the ball this morning and what a great take to the hole there he keeps playing like that Rock Creek may want to have all their games move to the morning there you go no but you'll see you know and those that have been around a long time you know we used to have the squads you know first and third quarter second and fourth quarter U but now the emphasis on just making sure the kids get uh 6 minutes or one quarter of playing time uh some coaches have different philosophies on how to do that um writing them down on an index card or some will make those adjustments right there I already have mine written out I said a trained monkey could probably figure out how to do my rotations I already have them I already have them written out and uh that's the way so they have some practice um you know practice time when we're not playing with that combination so 13 to7 Rock Creek with the lead seven minutes left in the second quarter good now he broke the Press now just get under control nice job Mount Healthy oh my goodness and I don't know if that's just Ro putting the pressure and extending them out there or just not being used to that yeah again first game number 33 puts a shot up no good guess who's there yep Custer again my [Applause] goodness definitely got some size as well as you can oh great defense Again by Rock Creek number five ja Brandman so now we got the we got the lead up to 10 so now you have to fall back and just play your half court defense oh oh good defense again number [Applause] 22 here we go number 33's got the ball down the floor be strong with it oh number 24 just rips it right out of his hands good ball nice [Applause] pass oh my goodness oh guess who and Custer guess [Applause] who I think they may call this their five minute substitution here stop the clock get new groups on yeah very quickly Rock Creek has extended their lead now to [Applause] 14 number one up with the shot no good look at that like a like a pack of pack of Bulldogs there just going after that ball Rock Creek will go with their two3 Zone to defend out of bounds pulls him out great pass just to get the ball in defense oo good Hustle 23 this time on the [Applause] boards there you go oh good shot number one Graham [Applause] prizer he's just getting used to the gym yeah you can tell fizer's got a really nice shot and just has to get used to the the gym and a new environment [Applause] all right let's see what Graham's going to do here getting things set up oh there you go it looks like they're going to try to trap out of that two three zone for Rock Creek Mount Healthy stays in their own version of their Zone with their one [Music] uhoh how in the world did he see that how in the world did he see that great job [Applause] number one up with the shot no good working hard for that offensive [Applause] rebound Corner shot [Music] [Applause] nope one-handed pass oh he beat everybody down oh oh I bet had that one again anticipating the contact because what a great pass from 40 to fizer down low on the on the [Applause] layup it's fun watching both coaches work the sidelines as the passes out of the there number 12 [Applause] up oh my now you know what I'm impressed that cheerleader down there didn't move one inch she did not flinch did she stayed right there in her [Music] spot good drive there number 15 looks like got a deflected 23 ends up with [Applause] it going to be a foul on Mount Healthy oh allaround good basket there on the offensive board I think Tucker kind of picks up where re to getting a rest there on the bench I tell you if there's going to be two keys um for all those kids out there that want to play ebl I will say two things ball handling and just handling the pressure um right here you can see dribbling down the floor left-handed he wanted to keeping that left hand for the layup 52 on the break oh good defense from number [Applause] 12 back to Lloyd 30 seconds left all right here be strong with the ball pivot oh tries a little bit of a fancy pass there good thought Rock Creek's at number 12 Patrick Strickland having none of that [Applause] 5 4 3 oh I've never seen that before Nate where the the goal the side goals deflected the uh potentially great shot there yeah it's a strange game you you you can see a lot of different things if you've been around a while so note note to self we'll try to get those things uh put up a little bit further up in the ceiling before our next game yes 25 to9 at halftime there's a what is there a three minute halftime correct Nate yes we're going to go three minutes um again with some of the co regulations and and changes um no need to go to the locker rooms um so we just keep him there on the bench hopefully get the game going a little bit sooner so far what have you thought about the first half well I I tell you there's a there's a few things I think Mount Healthy will continue to improve as the game goes on you know that first game uh just getting oriented um and and they're enjoying you can tell they're enjoying playing to get somebody else you know when you're in a practice for a long period of time and you you kind of get tired of scrimmage against the same same guys so um certainly they're enjoying themselves out here um have some things to work on their coaches are going to do a great job doing that um Rock Creek you can tell they have two games under their belt and um I tell you for for Rock Creek what I really like um their their second best offense is for their big guys Tucker and Reed to just get the offensive rebound and put it right back up yeah um and that's just you know rebounding is just that's just heart that's just effort working hard um it's not about size um just determination yeah good observations you know uh I know hofinger has done a great job on both sides of the ball uh has really been hustling as as like as well as you said uh I've just been really impressed with Reed kuster um you know obviously it takes someone finding him with the ball but even when he doesn't get the ball like you said he's there on the offensive re rebound he knows where to be uh whether it's weak side or uh on a short-sided rebound he's just been cleaning up the mess for Rock Creek and you know it shows 25 to9 after the first half yeah and it's like it's like the tale of of two quarters we had a really you know close one there and then you know and I think that's part of the strategy with ebl and how how we substitute and that is you know where where are you going to find all of your players 6 minutes um and let's just be honest you know you'll have some players that are going to get more time than others because they have a they have a an advanced skill set compared to others but at the same time you want everyone to get good quality floor time and um looks like Rock Creek may have saved their best for the second quarter mhm yep boy and just like that we're ready to start number three period number three boys are playing first and the girls will be coming up next correct that is correct yep and you know what we alternate every year so at the boys getting the crowd and everybody hyped up and then we'll come in with the girls after that and I'm going to tell you that girls game is going to be an exciting one a lot of good players on that team I'll be excited to watch them play you're doing a little scouting right uh have you already played either's team no we've not played either team and uh wouldn't necessarily call it scouting as much as just enjoying another another team play and then and not having to worry about the outcome there you go there he is again yep kuster's picking up where he left off in the first [Applause] half look at that [Applause] Bo I tell you what that number 40 yep Jaden Lloyd Jaden Lloyd he has got a cannon for an arm what's more impressive is that his teammates are able to catch it [Music] [Applause] [Music] you can tell Mount healthy's coach is really trying to um just impart on his team hey we got to clean up those offensive rebounds yeah you know and I'll tell another little secret here for those wanting to play out there you know we're sitting here watching film you watch the other you watch your the the team that's or the group of boys that are not playing you know how engaged are they in the game and you know both squads look like they are focused ready to give their contribution whenever their numers called [Applause] yeah you know um just as you're talking about that Mr Bean uh as a as a teacher you know you're even on uh Saturday and after 3:15 you're imparting some knowledge here I know that they I got some great feedback after week one that um we've got a lot of young kids that are not yet in fifth or sixth grade who are watching this with their family so thank you for thinking about them uh I got some great feedback on our bcsc uh Facebook page as well as YouTube channel make sure to subscribe so that you see those um but yeah keep on uh giving us that great knowledge because I know there's some you know maybe some first second third graders who are excited about the future of ebl good deflection and steel number five up oh probably got hit a little bit he's going to jump right back up what a great bounce pass into that post quick screen in yeah number 24 Reed kuster sixth grader for Rock Creek nice shot that is that is excellent form shooting I he just goes up there same routine on the free throw line every time and and with that's a lane violation we'll goad and play it that was against rck Creek so since kuster missed that shot we'll just play it out number 11 from the the dish from number 40 another Quick Pass Coulson Les gets that one [Applause] in there he is again man healthy clears it they're down crosscourt pass running one hander very nice by number one fiser Graham prizer o that is a good jet ball right there got to say that takes some heart from number 32 to tie up the ball from you know obviously a pretty big Reed kuster great job there and yeah and then just anticipating where that pass was going to go get your hands on it hang on to it looking for that crosscourt pass 32 and we got a foul you know so something I'll be looking for next time down the floor and again we can um players looking here you know the the Custer kid it's not necessarily that he's bigger or stronger than everybody it's that he gets good positioning he has a foot in front and if you can get step in and get a foot in front you have that rebounding positioning so his his efforts on the rebounding actually take place before the shot is even attempted and that's just great footwork number five Jax Brandman at the line looks like they got a mostly a new Squad coming in from Mount Healthy they're going to go and have him wait for the first free throw here and get everybody subbed in so this is our sub philos we say five on five off almost like hockey yeah number five jack brandan Southpaw puts that up there no good now we'll get some rotations here five minutes left in the third quarter again look at that routine it's the same every time good form good [Applause] shot Rock Creek sting out to a little bit of a different Zone there a 131 type of look and another jump ball [Applause] oh number 11 all the way down very nice defense wasn't set good take from Jacob Huffman there fun fact one of his uncles Derek Huffman uh great high school basketball ball player for Columbus East I remember seeing some moves like that back when I was in high school so you're telling me we have a Huffman on a Rock Creek team we do oh my shots up no good just a few steps on that one I tell so if I was Mount Healthy um and again the boys are working really hard first game I would do exactly what I did um with the game that you did with us yeah um and that is you have a good great film to look at the things that you need to work on and improve you make a list as a coach and you you know you commit yourself to that make your practice playing around those things to get better and um when we have your expertise and audio video and all this great stuff believe me coaches everywhere are very very happy that you've given this opportunity for these kids to to be a star a YouTube sensation yeah you I'm sure you've got some students in class that would love to be YouTube Stars yes yes indeed well and now so I'm a um a bridge teacher for third grade and I've got kids from Mount Healthy and Rock Creek in my class so shout out to those third graders if they're watching told them that both their teams are going to be here M healthy good attempt to try to get the ball in the middle of that zone shots up good sportsmanship there by number 11 for Rock Creek Mount Healthy seems to be really using that high picking roll and whether it be number two or I remember fizer I think he's on the bench right now um they're really taking that shot early and and they seem like they've got great form they're just not not going in right now and it it's unusual I mean some people think you know what you're going to set a screen on a Zone and uh yeah there are areas right in there you can set that screen um you know we'll tell our team if if a team's playing a Zone we want to make sure that the ball changes changes sides of the floor or goes inside out um but if you keep the ball on one side of the floor it's real easy for the defense oh my goodness number two for M healthy up you know what he's going to earn his two points at the line Dean klefan and again I saw some great sportsmanship there from both number two and 11 you know obviously great defense from number two but then uh you know Huffman made sure to say hey I wasn't didn't mean to hurt you or anything by that I just didn't want to give you an easy bucket so we'll see if he can earn it right here ah here's a second attempt up off the back of the IR than a minute now 45 seconds left in the third quarter oh got to travel on that took two steps before the dribble now the good attempt to get the ball inside stay there there we go and now what can cman do at the offense there getting a pass around to number 12 no good stop the ball Huffman of the hole oh my oh nice offensive board there's Tucker gorley for that clean up two one last second shot [Music] [Applause] oh all right while re Creek cheerleaders taking the floor here all right those four young ladies from Rock Creek we have Maya Blandon Marin Glick Leila Lakin and Kayla [Music] Williams all right so here we are to start the fourth quarter Rock Creek up 3114 dancing around the perimeter there good [Music] pressure oh good steal there number five in the little crossover oh and there's Dean kleffman number two for Mount Healthy ready for that crossover [Applause] down the floor we go oh my goodness oh there's that baseball pass again from 40 my goodness still feel like you're doing football games from last night I tell you what that one was a deep one that was landed that right in there unable to convert on the three-point play but scrambled for hofinger oh and the nice Lefty rebound or excuse me Lefty layup and looks like rock Creek's going to try their hand out a bit of a modified two three Zone 113 but I tell you what if you don't get in front of the ball handler something like that will [Applause] [Music] happen whoop and again look at those cheerleaders not flinching at all just barely moving Palms still in place smile still on their face Steel by hinger down to [Applause] Huffman and what can we do with this offensive rebound number 11 Jacob Huffman sets the offense into the big fellow there number 24 up and [Applause] good apologies on the scoreboard updated That 35-6 Rock Creek with the lead from way outside number one no good and we'll stay here 7 minutes left in the fourth quarter and a grab there on the arm you know pass is coming your way you want to meet that pass don't run away from it and I think that's exactly what Graham did right there forcing that foul [Applause] all right number four Jaden Lloyd handling the ball there on the perimeter Dagan to Graham Graham on the drive Huffman with the deflection up to number 22 shots up no good and guess what those cheerleaders kept on [Laughter] cheering well we talked earlier about you know Rock Creek they have a uh just a reputation for producing some some great student athletes out there on the uh east side of Bartholomew County and and that includes uh both the basketball players as well as those cheerleaders who four times I think now the ball's coming at them and they don't Flinch at all and you know and I think you bring up a keyword they're student athletes and you know these these kids are students first and they have to make sure that their classwork their homework their participation their attitude in the school um is that a higher standard quite honestly um more is expected of them and because of that their reward is to be able to suit up play the game and represent their school looks like rock Creek's going to try a halfcourt 212 type of press need to get the ball in the middle of the floor and they'll fall back into their two3 Zone hang on to it there you go just a little strong on the pass now to kuster just a bit outside all right got some substitutions here for Mount Healthy see if we can't get some of those kids some some good floor time you know every kid every kid will practice hard but there's there's something to be said for actual Court time being there on the floor and learning it's a different type of [Applause] intensity there we go good shot fake good drive offensive rebound rebound and immediately picking him up on defense that is a good sequence there by the Eagles shots up no good now good shot but I tell you every every coach here knows and seen that that was a great left hand although I have to remember number five was he the Lefty he I believe he is yeah brandan yeah he had that nice Lefty stroke at the line we saw recently [Applause] fizer shots up no good bodies everywhere good [Applause] hustle I got to tell you uh Lloyd number 40 Jaden Lloyd has been everywhere tonight for the Mount Healthy Eagles both sides of the ball we've seen the baseball pass but also a hustle there down low I tell you him and and his his teammates they will continue to improve throughout this year um even with the with a shorten season um coaches are having a coach differently um and how they adjust their practices um [Applause] this Mount Healthy team has has a lot of good a lot of good parts that as they start to gel together throughout the year um will be a lot of fun to watch just like that great defense and the jump stop with the bank and you know what was great about that is that he a nice little jump stop he gathered himself Defender flies out of bounds great job [Music] [Applause] there you said it just like [Applause] that you know number number 40 if Jaden's not trying to create a shot on his own he's he's looking to get other people involved [Music] here we [Applause] go nice job way to get in front of the ball force a shot there two minutes left in the fourth quarter [Music] well again want to thank you you know I talking with some other people you know we got the Big 10 Network we' got the SEC network and only here in Columbus Indiana do we have our own small version of the ebl network where we can really showcase these kids um you know with no tournament a shortened season um this is a this is a nice way to um to really highlight our student athletes and and make them feel special so on behalf of all the coaches for boys and girls and cheerleading um we thank you he we were definitely glad to do it I wish I could do it uh every every night but you know as you know my wife is uh also a teacher got a couple of Mustangs who uh go here to school and I got to get home every now and then to see them yes that's right but we are glad to be able to have an e game of the week and thanks to Dennis Pierce we're going to be able to see every team play at least once this [Applause] year there you go strong with the ball good pivot hey number 40 [Applause] 30 seconds left little sense of urgency here at the end of the fourth I like to see that hustle well none of them are looking at the scoreboard they're playing every [Applause] possession good shot up 10 seconds [Applause] and that will be the ball [Music] [Applause] game all right so as each team gathers up there at their bench we have a final score here Rock Creek 37 Mount Healthy 20 we will get ready for our covid protocol here we'll get teams cleared out and get ready for our next game with the girls I want to say also a special thank you to our parents you know they're they're trying to do everything they can to help save this season and you know obviously as we see the covid numbers throughout the state our County and our nation you know uh it's it's important that all of us are doing our part to make sure that we're staying safe and healthy so thank you to all the parents out there coach what did you see in game one of our e double header today you know if we were to you know we don't necessarily have to give a a player the game or anything but you know who were some of the standouts that you saw from both sides well I think obviously for RO Creek you have to you have to look at uh number 23 tcher gorley number 24 uh Reed kuster they just did a um a bang up job job on the boards um you know there's that old saying that um from Pat Summit offense you know offense will sell the tickets defense will win the games but rebounding will win your championships and even though we're not going to have a championship this year um just working in there and and giving your team another either another opportunity to score on the offensive glass or preventing uh your opponent from getting another score down there so really impressed with uh Rock cre um rebounding um for Mount Healthy um again I think they have um some some good pieces that with um a little bit more practice and um game time Court time that they will they will continue to improve um you know Jaden Lloyd you know special player out there um you can tell that he he's wanting to get his team involved um and you know it playing around with and and trying to understand you know sometimes it's it's good to get your teammates involved but sometimes you need to um go ahead and take care of of getting that shot yourself so uh pretty good there and then I think Graham also prizer for for Mount Healthy is a good um that's that's that's going to be a good one-two punch there yeah I think that's a great analysis you know both teams obviously just going to continue to get better throughout the season and um you know I think that uh Dennis Pierce has done a great job ebl director of of you know last week we had Southside versus Parkside which was a rematch of last year's championship matches and then this time we've got a cross count uh rivalry matchup with Mount Healthy that's on the southwest side of the county and then the East Side far east side of the county Rock Creek and uh looking forward to see the girls in game two um as you said um is it every year that you flip boys or girls first that is correct yep yeah and you know Indiana basketball it's special whether it's uh elementary middle school high school college uh it's just different and we are glad to be able to uh live stream uh this ebl game of the week Rock Creek versus Mount Healthy thank you coach Bean for being here on the mic for bcse my name is Josh Bernett bcse Communications coordinator we're going to take a break and we'll be back with you in a few moments for game two e e e like to welcome everyone to game two of our ebl matchup of the week between Rock Creek Bulldogs and the Mount Healthy Eagles first game went to the Bulldogs 37 to2 in the guys match and here we are with the girls game getting ready to start again if you're just tuning in for uh the first time my name is Josh Bernett I'm the bcsc communications coordinator and we are um excited to be able to bring you uh this live stream of the matchup of the week thanks to Dennis Pierce ebl director for helping schedule uh these once a week live streams where uh the intent is to be able to showcase our our student athletes from our 11 elementary schools at least once uh during the ebl season obviously we're in a different time right now with uh covid-19 and um so all of our games this season will be played at Southside Elementary I will be joined today during game two once again by Southside teacher and girls coach girls basketball coach Nate Bean um he'll be helping me with the play byplay I'll be uh working the cameras as well as updating our scores and there he is Nate Bean is back he's uh helping to get the numbers and names of our young ladies that'll be playing today uh wanting to give them uh the credit that they so deserve um all of our student athletes and and coaches are doing such a great job in in a a different season and uh so we want to make sure that each of them has the opportunity to be a YouTube Star here and so Nate thank you for joining us getting ready for the tip off of game two I'm going to turn it over to you it looks like you've got our uh some of our rosters that will be announcing during the game thanks for being here hey that's quite all right now some of these players here all recognize having been in the girls coaching Circle here for a while number 33 for Mount Healthy AA Warfield gets the tip and we got a foul right off the bat [Applause] there lot of familiar faces out here I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the Rock Creek coach Gary Barker um great Ambassador for girls basketball here in town his teams are always well coached all right so something different here with the girls the girls can shoot from the 12T line if they want um even if they're shooting from the 15 if they go over the line that would be okay um right off the bat there we got a jump ball tell you what number 3 three Ava Warfield is going to be in the middle of a lot of things she's [Music] active not healthy comes out in a version of a one 122 and number 11 ree peoples very quick card this Rock Creek roster is loaded with six graders and at last year as fifth graders they were really good and so it's going to be real exciting to see how they do there's early [Applause] yes [Music] there's number four up with the shot no good Delaney Richards is coming out with it for rck Creek over to the left hand met by two Mount Healthy Defenders Miley lell Ava Warfield [Music] there Rock Creek's in a modified two3 Zone A 1 one3 that's where that opening is going to be at in any kind of zone right there in the middle right there in the middle there's Delaney Richards out gets the ball up number 20 Lola Watkins puts the ball up [Applause] rebounded and Rock Creek takes the lead two [Music] [Applause] there's Reese peoples I tell you what I remember her playing as a fourth grader and I told her with her height caught up with her heart she was going to be something else and so here she is a sixth grader now for Rock Creek she's one of those uh rare kids because when you um can't fill a roster you can start going down and getting fourth graders from the league so she's been actually uh this is her third year playing fourth grade fifth grade and now as a sixth grader and you can tell just how comfortable she is out there and I believe um Mount Healthy has the same situation test Morino and Heidi kirkoff couple of fourth graders so looks forward to seeing their contribution as well there's Ava Warfield with the steel oh just in and out but immediately and that's that's something there immediately back on defense not hanging her head knows that she can make a contribution with a good block like that and look at the ball handling keeps the ball [Applause] Alive looks like some Harlem Globe Trotters right there she takes that in tell AA is a special kid she works um really hard on her game um got a chance to work with her over the summer with a few other kids and her her ball handling has improved proved she knew that she'd have to be a ball handler um for this Mount Healthy team and um you know she keeps growing she's going to be a kid that can handle the ball well and be tall and that is a dangerous combination [Music] indeed we're at our five minute substitution here some some familiar names here on this Rock Creek team number 25 Addison Dean her sister's currently playing over there at East and um Gabby Dean that is correct yep she had quite the seasoning for volleyball as well got to see some of her skills in the live streams [Applause] so for Rock Creek we do have number one Carly humph uh number five Tristan Works number 10 Laya Glick number 11 ree peoples number 13 Brena benman 14 Delaney Richards 20 Lola Watkins number 21 Addison kmer 23 Bowser 24 Ariana TOA and like I said number 25 Addison Dean um absent from the lineup today uh either due to illness or other activities um number three Ty Jessup and number 15 uh Kylie Dover I was excited I was wanting to see her play too she was a former uh Southside kid here and then moved out to the Rock Creek area and I coach Barker you're you're going to get a special one with her she's a good kid hard worker for Mount Healthy number 33 Ava Warfield number 53 Miley litol number four uh Piper ammerman number 51 Ali Watkins 45 Lily green number 23 chess Desy Routan number 21 Jaylen Engle King and number 15 Janice Addis uh number 43 Zoe bro 41 cadence bradin number 10 Tess mormino and number three Heidi kirkoff [Applause] Rock Creek's going to come out in a modified 221 press [Applause] all right trying to get the ball in here ball comes to Ava Warfield come on back to the left good job all right number number 20 Lola Watkins handling the ball in the perimeter gets a good screen from number Delaney and rock Creek's going to try to turn their defense into [Music] offense Watkins almost ends up with the ball a is down the floor yeah and I tell you those are those are two kids that know each other really well they've competed against each other and and and with one another in various programs out here throughout Columbus and so um it's nothing personal good screen on the ball AA brings the ball in Warfield misses it right off the front of the rim I'm going to guess it's a little bit of the same for the girls here as it was for the boys just getting your game Feed under you and the pace of the game she's got the steel tipped out from [Applause] behind there goes number 10 oh the bank is open number 10 lla Glick [Applause] [Music] getting close to the two-minute Mark Rock Creek up 5-0 Warfield with the ball down the floor centers [Applause] it there's number 21 shots [Applause] blocked Alison baller tries to get it up that's also [Applause] blocked there's Warfield tries to find an opening [Applause] there there's Reese down the floor Reese peoples finds a wide open player no good offensive rebound no good and Mount Healthy has a few things they want to try to get squared away here for this last minute 32 and I know that Nate the score is 5 Z but it really is a pretty close game you know like you said just a couple of baskets that uh that Dro from Mount Healthy and and this is a a tie ball game yeah and it's like I said those those Jitters um and you know to be honest with you this is the players have to adjust too you know a a pregame or pre-practice warm up that you know you may spend 20 30 minutes doing um you know a routine that you're used to is now um you know get down here to the gym you got five minutes to warm up and let's go and so that's that's another adjustment that players and coaches are are um um figuring out as the co season goes along um everything that we've been used to doing for so long is now you know might have to think about and do do a little bit differently minute and a half left in the first quarter and REE gets her hands on that [Applause] one and that jump ball will bring the ball over back for the Bulldogs number 10 Laya Glick fouled on the shot there is that difference as you said uh is 12 feet correct for the free throw that is correct and the and the emphasis and focus has always been um proper form good form shooting so you're not shoving the ball up there and you know just recognizing the difference that some kids uh may be a little stronger than others but we we want good form shooting um look really good there [Music] [Applause] you know reee is going to get her hands on just about anything if you put it out there 10 seconds left in the first quarter final possession can they get it in passes it to Warfield [Applause] one there's your Mount Healthy Eagles cheerleaders back on the [Music] [Applause] court all right great job for the M healthy cheerleaders there we had Eva burbrink Quinn Carr Jayla fosbrink tanland Destiny lead better and Anna Russell you know obviously um you know most of the action that we're covering today is is our basketball student athletes but you know it's a tough season for our cheerleaders as well not having that Super Saturday uh competition yes um you know if you could just for those who are tuning in just speak again how uh how fortunate we are to have a season though because you know obviously much different this season but we're just glad to be on the courts yeah and I will say you know a lot of sacrifices a lot of things that are different but the the main focus here is that we get a season and um it may not be the season we've envisioned but it's going to be a season that um where we can at least say that we've had the opportunity to play um you know a lot of things are different I I have been asked you know by many coaches how's it working out for you guys here at Southside because all the games are played here and it's a it's a small sacrifice to make with adjusting schedules and practice time so that the other 10 elementary schools can enjoy um competing and so not a big deal at all yeah and just want to say thanks to you as well as Chris bodart and principal bachmeyer and assistant principal Kathy Jackson for being great hosts throughout this e season well and it's it's been okay and and we're glad to help and and certainly Dennis Pierce plays a big part in that too um you know I I I I have found that through this covid time that um you know we're more likely to pull together and and and uh help one another out and even if that's a sacrifice of giving up um a practice time or something like that so that we can we can get teams in here and play then that's exactly what we're going to [Applause] do Warfield once again oh just a little strong there we go Mount Health's on the board that's a good one for her just staying active underneath the boards reys no good gets the long rebound that one's short You Can Tell She's a little frustrated with herself but you know she's going to come back here on the defensive end and make something happen [Applause] oh couple free throws coming up you know and I I talked about the importance of of ball handling and being strong with the ball you can you can tell that rock Creek's philosophy they they want to make sure they have someone on number 33 a of a Warfield at all times and so um that's where a couple other players for mat healthy are going to have to help handle the ball um you know there's always time to work on ball handling let's see what she does here with her second shot she chooses a shoes from the 15 foot line oh offensive rebound up no good on the floor gets it out good Warfield has the ball and immediately picked up by number 20 Lola Watkins shots up no good weak side [Applause] oh ball stays with Mount [Applause] Healthy as you said Warfield is about on every play and so she takes the ball out here oh Lola Watkins picks up that one gets down the floor for a quick two H good steal up no good Warfield comes soing in with the ball there you go cross it over to the middle of the floor oh my goodness Reese peoples brings the ball down the floor cross the floor number five shots up rattling around no good one offensive rebound two offensive rebound nothing happening guess away guess Ava Warfield ends up with the ball [Applause] down I tell you what if you don't if you don't think girls basketball is pass enough just just watch those coaches on the sideline um get after their players making sure they're where they need to be um and encouraging them you know this is this is a learning League uh for some girls it's the first time they've ever played organized basketball and for others it's you know they've played in various travel teams and things like that and so to to pull it all together the experien is U that's the real challenge for a coach [Applause] and both teams very well coached oh good offensive rebound there by [Applause] Watkins oh another [Applause] steal way to secure the ball warfield's going to bring it up pass it up the floor [Applause] Watkins is everywhere she sure is you know speaking of uh passion you know think about those fans we've got a great crowd here that are doing everything that they can to maintain physical distance and support their student athletes but also want to give a shout out to all of you who are watching we've got a great uh streaming crowd here thank you for tuning in on this Saturday morning Halloween and uh just want to encourage you if you haven't already to subscribe to our bcsc YouTube channel so that you'll be notified uh of our live streams as well as new videos we'll be uh streaming an eblo game of the week and this week the privilege uh we have to stream is uh Mount Healthy in Rock Creek so Rock Creek Falls back into their halfcourt defense one of our e rules is once you are up by 10 points or more uh no more full-court press Delaney Richards ends up with it dribbling down the floor left-handed gets bumped by a healthy Defender we'll take that one out on the [Music] side good shot fake by Reese ball gets passed out and again that's one of those examples there Mount Healthy had secured the ball so Rock Creek needed to get back good clear number 20 Watkins brings it down fires up no good there's Warfield [Applause] ball there at the top and I tell you what everywhere there is a rock crate Defender Watkins brings the ball up oh great good defense got a little worried there when Warfield went down but it just looks like she's tying her shoe there coach use as a built-in break catch your breath [Applause] Lola Watkins up with the shot I'm going to try to get a ball screen up there Rock Creek Falls back into their two3 Zone and then extends it out at the top and that right there is Classic Rock Creek basketball um if you turn your back or not strong with the ball you'll turn around and there'll be someone there to tie it up um coach Barker's teams always improved throughout the year as a fan of basketball I enjoy watching his teams but as someone that has to coach against him from the other side of the scores table and it that's a whole different story and um I've often said I I do not like playing Rock Creek teams late in the season because cuz Barker will get them better um it just does a great job good steel tip ahead there's Watkins up with the shot no good following it in Reese no good takes her own shot no good ends up with it again shot goes up and good third times a [Applause] charm less than a minute left in the second quarter all right we of our time here 30 seconds mat healthy brings a different kind of pressure they're going to bring Ava up try to force the ball out of Watkins Hands Extended good quick pass number 14 Delaney Reon up with the ball rips it out there's Watkins up for the shot no good less than 10 seconds and that's going to be the first half three minute break at halftime coach and what do you what have we seen in this first half so far well I think for for Rock Creek what you see is is a lot of experience and and um as I said before you know last year a lot of these fifth graders and you know they took their knocks they they were competitive but now coming back a year later a year older a year taller a year bigger stronger um they just have a lot of good parts that work together um you you got kids on that team that know their role what they're supposed to do um you know there's only one basketball out there and there's only um you know one person that can shoot it at a time but um there's always a a place on a team for um for rebounding good ball handling good defense and that kind of stuff um from Mount Healthy what I see you know is a team that um obviously you got AA orfield that is um logging a lot of minutes and as that team continues to play and you know be just like the the boys team that we saw earlier they they will improve um what they have is a is a great Crystal Clear broadcast um so they can go back and look at some things um um some good pieces um good looks underneath it just just need to get converted yeah and you know you've mentioned that a couple times uh Nate that you know to be able to look back at this broadcast um you know you were week one uh Southside versus Parks side what were some of the things that you saw when you watched uh the game back as a coach well well I the first thing I noticed was that um that that Parkside team was not as bad as what coach uh Kanan hashman and Jim Norris led me to believe he was sandbagging a little bit yes he was sandbagging quite a bit and so when it's like you know when I hear that I'm like listen I you know I I've never known a bad Parkside team so but the second thing that you know one of the things we noticed is that we we tried to push too hard um you know this is a very delicate game and if you try to manhandle it and play at a pace that you know is too fast it you know it you'll get hurt um and we we missed a lot of shots because we were trying to go for I guess a 10-point play that never existed so um you we talked about just one possession at a time take care of the ball um I think once we did that and and got some good Steals and some things like that um you know we we were we were feeling a little bit more comfortable um we focused on we looked at our rebounding which you know needed to be needed to improve on and um just standing you know on on offense um and you know what we need to do there it's hard to guard someone that keeps moving and but our defense got uh much better we you know we're a man-to-man team um we play a version of the packline defense and you know keep everybody you know tight on the three-point line and you know we had some new kids that were adjusting ing to that they were on the wrong side of their Defender and then looking at that um just show them where they needed to be and got a little bit of practice time to to work on that and then we gotten gotten better well I'm glad that you were able to utilize that and I hope that we hope that Rock Creek and Mount Healthy will be able to look back at this game and you know obviously family and friends be able to watch it but also that as you said they could learn from their performance and right away Rock Creek gets back on the board that's 13 Brena uh B men up with the shot so good adjustment here we're trying to get some kind of an alignment a 22 or 212 alignment um a is just trying to find some room to work there [Applause] shot good shot by Warfield [Applause] there Rock Creek though comes right back there here we go we're going to try to spread the floor out a little [Applause] bit shots up Ain good you spoke to it they just needed to get used to the uh new environment and playing a a game here and already both teams coming out hot well and I will say too uh aa's aa's Dad one of the assistant coaches over there and he has a um has a way of motivating his daughter not with yelling or Screaming or anything like that but just trying to calm her down get her centered and when there's a little bit rushed [Applause] Breakaway for Rock Creek and they did their job they did their job stopping the ball but then ree did her job of being under control uh Gathering herself and putting up a nice shot There She is [Applause] again she's got a nice shot there coach with that Runner she does and that again that's you know she she works really hard on her game wow I don't know what both coaches said to their teams but this is um fantastic [Applause] offense the runner again yeah all they needed to do and that you know that's where we talk about coaching just spread the floor out um make some adjustments on offense go way to position herself hang on strong to the ball number 21 Addison kmer is going to get two shots you I've talked uh you know to Ava and a few other these players about you know working hard you know coming to practice with your team that's that's when you get better as a team working on things but the real Improvement the individual Improvement comes from from what do you do when when you have an empty gym or um a basketball court there at your house that's where your individual Improvement comes and it may not be as fun and as glorious and but it's it's important everyone loves to work at the things they're good at no one likes to work at the things that they're bad at and once you get that um that kind of a different mindset and then you see the the paying off in a game as that one rattles around and [Applause] out oh got caught up in the excitement so see M healthy will kind of get the floor spread out again that's tipped out of bounds [Applause] now healthy gets set up in they out of bounds play ah this one's going back to Warfield in the corner very nice designed play just a little strong on the [Applause] jumper Mount Health's execution of that inbounds play was just about Flawless that was that was fantastic [Applause] there's Reese with the ball gets it in 13 shots no good offensive rebound up by number 25 Addison Dean gets that put right back in and we're halfway through the third quarter now coach 27- 10 Rock Creek with the lead running clock for uh this season here in e nice job recognizing an open player right there almost dropped in for number 43 Zoe [Applause] [Music] there's Reese Off to the Races oh and then it was that number 23 gets her hand on the ball offensive rebound there's another one and official says you know let's just go ahead yeah let's just go ahead and stop this with a jump ball and just to date myself a little bit more Mr wed down there one of our referees was one of my referees in elementary basketball you know and I tell you and Brad pal down there he about the same age I am um you know I would put out there um for any you know former athletes or or anything like that we're always looking for good game officials and so [Music] um get your referees like license and and be part of the fun here and good steal there [Applause] nice tell you the first mistake I made my first year coaching in ebl was jumping all of the officials and and getting a mad at me I didn't realize that they all went out and hung out together after the game they were they were saying what a what a jerk I was to them most of the time and it took me about 2 years to to build those bridges back i' burned as Reese good jump shot a jump stop missed that one yeah those referees are a close group for sure yes they are and you know and that was just I think goes back to also um I think what we have here also is just a good mentorship for uh you know young coach um I think it's kind of our responsibility as kind of Veteran either coaches or officials um to be to be good mentors and and give give some younger kids an opportunity and I say kids I mean young adults to get out there and um you know to be a part of this to learn this is a learning league and I think that's what sometimes we don't realize is that not only is it a learning league for the players but learning league for for coaches I've been fortunate to have um former players who have decided that you know for one reason or another basketball isn't their future or in their interest for high school but they've come back and they wanted to help coach and so um I've had a few of those those uh kiddos back Naomi Gambrell um is one of those right now um Caroline McQueen was one that I had and I can tell you uh both those young ladies will be twice the coach that I'll ever be um because of their passion and and understanding of the game and just what a great role model they are for players two and a half minutes left in the third quarter Rock Creek up 29- 10 oh good look wide open number 43 shot up no [Applause] good I tell you so here I am looking at this game as as a coach and um I'm looking for Mount Healthy number 43 Zoe brell I I like what she's doing she has the potential um just if she's patient and and listens to her coaches she could be um another valuable asset there to help Warfield [Applause] [Music] [Applause] out and that that's one of the fun things as a coach is is just putting the pieces together put together a team um and get all 12 players to understand that you know they're not there's not one person that's more or less important than the other um so I like that coach everybody's got a role good bounce pass there shots up and good [Applause] walking the ball up the floor trying to get a screen up there so Warfield can get a little bit of room to work there's peoples [Applause] again getting down the floor there good job 24 seconds left probably the final possession here with the [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Eagles man that looked good 5 four Reese is going to get the ball down for see somebody down there one and that's the end of the third quarter [Music] go [Applause] you I can't can't tell you last time I I went to a basketball game and just enjoyed watching you know when you're a coach you're always out there critiquing yeah I can I can go to a volleyball game and enjoy it because I don't know anything about volleyball other than it need to go across in three but you know so you know you can even though the you know I'm coaching here but I don't have a team out I'm I'm looking at number 51 Ally Watkins for for Mount Healthy she's been um a little bit more involved in the offense um in the middle there you know she's a she's another piece I think that could that could um developed for them Mount Healthy they they shouldn't be discouraged by by whatever the score is today you know first game out and just finding those pieces and fitting together and any coach will tell you that that's the fun that's the fun part is getting all that together and and when you finally do um it's the best feeling in the world um and our first game here uh that was not broadcast CSA Lincoln uh boy they took two two hard ones on the chin they came out against two strong teams right at the B they had Richards and then um I think Parkside and then um played Schmidt today and a lot of the things that their coaches uh coach Ashley slate has has um been really pressing on them and emphasizing uh culminated into a whim for them today so congratulations to the CSA Lincoln husky girls yes speaking of CSA Lincoln coach next Thursday night is going to be our cross town CSA rivalry game CSA Lincoln against CSA fodrea we'll be broadcasting that and looking forward to uh bringing knew that rivalry game yeah that'll be a fun one [Applause] um both teams pretty evenly matched um and like you said that kind of rivalry between the two signature Academy elementary [Applause] schools good pivots there clearing the ball and the number 23 shot goes up no good out to Walkin shot no good oh and we'll just continue with our impressiveness of the Rock Creek cheerleaders that do not even move they do not flinch except when it's their turn to cheer [Music] [Applause] hey like that Runner [Applause] man moving the ball around pretty good there on the perimeter shots up no good you got to get in front of AA there to stop the ball she'll come around to the left put that try that Runner again no good you know that looked like Larry Bird there she is wearing number 33 she followed her own rebound there back and forth has Delaney Richards with the score there here's aavid Warfield trying to use up every in of that floor so she can turn the corner and go and number five Tristan Works in to get that deflection you know this morning was a good reminder that we're uh changing seasons here in Indiana uh today coach is the I believe the last fall Sports um competition Columbus North boys and girls cross country are competing for state titles today so we want to wish them a good luck and um just hope that they can bring home a title absolutely and you know what's what's really fun um as a teacher here in the corporation um it's for me it's become more of not North or east but just celebrating kids in general and all their accomplishments um so there's some there's some great kids on that team um you know the East boys soccer team did very well yes um and then got was pretty proud of the north girls soccer team got a couple former players on that team that um how about K R's last second goal I tell you KJ great kid um hard worker when she played here and I knew and I between her and Riley and and Laney Moore uh and with niia they if I made them choose between basketball and soccer I was going to be a loser they would they would pick soccer basketball was their fun Sport and I was okay with that um you know I've always been a a a big fan of being a multisport athlete as AA gets that shot up no good and cleared out by Rock [Music] Creek almost good Hustle but to be in fifth sixth and even seventh and eighth grade that's just too young to specialize in one sport so find a sport that you love your serious sport really get after it and then have a fun sport you know something different yeah I think that's great advice you know um these days you know being a young parent myself with a an 8-year-old you know you start being pulled in so many different directions and asked to special at an early age and you know here we are watching these young student athletes and maybe you know someone like an a Ava Warfield you know it's clear that she's got such great talent and maybe she plays basketball a lot but in order for her to just continue to develop and have fun and uh be successful in her high school and maybe Beyond you know it's good to have that other sport ree gets that steel up layup and good I can tell you AA aa's also a pretty good little softball player and so um you're right just stay involved with different sports and right now during Co it's just good to be able to play sports at all you bet Reese has got that steel again nice layup [Applause] Reese peoples has been everywhere today hasn't she she has been you know she's just she's a hard worker um she's not going to force any shots um her her forte has always been um really really active defense taking care of the basketball finding another player that might have a better shot than her um just a great team player well for all those kiddos that are going to go out trick-or-treating tonight we stay safe um we're in a we're in a different time with Co and trick-or-treating and I know some kids are are going to go out and have fun I know some that are maybe not going to be heading out um we we gave the option to to my kids listen we'll just take you to Walmart buy you a bag of candy there you go can we just and then can we just be done with it and I don't I don't think I've gotten a definitive answer one way or the other I think they're wanting to go trick-or-treating and then after that go to Walmart to buy the bag they want the both they want both um but we'll be ending games early here for at Southside this is our last one uh for today and here's a good opportunity for number 10 uh Tess uh mormino and number three Heidi kirkoff to get some some good Court time yeah a couple of fourth graders in there another great shot by [Applause] Peoples you know and this is where um and I think all all of our elementary coach just do a great job it would be real easy just to sit down and quit coaching but you look there at Mount Healthy um they're still coaching their kids talking to the kids on the bench there's always an opportunity to learn in this [Applause] game oh got her hand right in there 23 Chesney Routan almost and Watkins might not be the tallest out there but man she was down there with the trees indeed getting the [Applause] [Music] [Applause] rebound shots up no good there's ree with the ball good jump ball as I made that statement I I don't know if you know this name or not but I'm going to throw it out there do you remember Butch Wade I do remember coach Wade he was my seventh grade basketball coach at Central and he always used to uh give our point guard who uh was shorter in um elementary and middle school but eventually grew to over six feet Mark Wolford who ended up yes uh going to Purdue and eventually becoming a scholarship player there but he said Wolford what are you doing there down by the trees but just like Watkins he found a way to get the rebound and as you said I think earlier sometimes rebounds and defense is more about heart than height well and that's the other thing too that you know you may got a big kid or a tall kid and and never work on ball handling in elementary and then you know they all grow at different different rates and so um regardless of whether you're one of the shorter players on the team team or one of the taller players you know ball handling and rebounding are Universal um and they make this game a lot more enjoyable to play if you're good at him good pivoting out of the trouble there finds an opening wow another great layup by [Applause] Watkins one minute left in this fourth [Applause] quarter she doing a good job dribbling protecting the [Applause] ball and then number 10 for rck Creek Laya Glick ends up with it [Music] [Applause] seconds I want to thank you again for the opportunity to be a part of this and just talk girls basketball boys basketball elementary basketball um you know with with so many things going on and and you know either our city state federal level um I think if we're purposeful and and and look at opportunities like this and just to celebrate kids and and the accomplishments that they make the sacrifices that they make um you know that's that will help us all kind of get refocused and and know there's a lot of great things going on out there so to be a part of this I really appreciate it hey we're glad to have you Nate and uh thank you coach Bean for your contribution today and uh you know I'll be here each week so anytime you can be here i' love to have you and uh thank you all those who have watched this ebl matchup of the week between Rock Creek bulldogs and Mount Healthy Eagles this one goes to Rock Creek uh a sweep for the Bulldogs uh and the ladies 45 to2 for Nate bean I am Josh brnette bcse Communications coordinator thank you for tuning in we will see you next Thursday night CSA Lincoln against CSA fdre have a great Halloween and make sure to vote on Election Day next so um ah so hey good evening welcome to max andrus field 15 minutes to kick off here until sectional round one of the 6a contest between columbus north and traveling center grove i'm joined here to my left by the pride of western michigan and kalamazoo's second son john havana hi john hi john how are you fantastic how are you well i mean as i introduced you that you know kalamazoo's second son you you can't get very far without somebody wanting to come up and say hi well we got the doors shut and the doors locked just for that reason if nothing else 9-0 center grove visits max anders field tonight number one in state number 17 ranked depending on where you look across the nation visiting columbus north here is six and two and solid season just lost uh two two contests by four points each so initial thoughts of what you expect tonight coach very subjective i would assume yeah to a pretty close game i think came down to the last drive um if columbus wants to if columbus north wants to win this football game tonight i think they got to do what they're capable of doing uh oh we're gonna sing the national anthem john you were saying yeah sorry about that coach um yeah so just a couple quick points um last week uh is important to note uh cathedral actually put put 330 or so yards up on the on the board last week in their loss so they the uh an offense that's executing can do well uh against the center grove team although they're they're they're 17 or they're number one at state for a reason um so gonna have to play mistake free football i think they're gonna have to rush it early and make progress uh which will loosen up the passing game uh and and you could call it a question you could flip that around too you could pass it well and then run it well um but i think the thing comes down to for columbus north the thing i the reason why they have i think those two losses and the way to get through this game tonight and with a win is no mistakes no penalties no balls on the ground no fumbles uh they're as good a football team if they play mistake free and that's the key i think center grove's game is they're gonna come out they're gonna play a really good football game and they're gonna do what they do really well and if columbus north can do that then we're going to see a close game at minimum we'll see a really close game hopefully it comes down to the last drive center grove 9-0 of course on the year winners of the of the mick conference and in in simply dominant dominant fashion until as you said last week against cathedral 5a school theater always always a strong contender i think you said it correctly coach columbus north has they have won games this year even even despite penalties and mistakes that have been made turnovers that sort of thing so coach bless said it earlier this week in an interview and you reiterated just now north will certainly have to put together a very seemingly polished perfect game or close to it but as i said north is six and two just two two losses that were close uh dealing with with several mistakes throughout the year yeah i think uh i i think i think what we what we might also add to it coaches um if you can get center grove to make them to make a mistake right so you come out and you want to play a perfect football game but you come out and play hard enough and what i was going to talk about is just you know kind of a loose defense so you hope you don't make a lot of mistakes on offense or any at all but on defense if you play loose and you play tough and you cause a couple of of errors against a team like center grove you might actually get ahead in a way you didn't expect to so if they get a fumble or they get an interception could help them early they're going to come out hopefully looking for those things that come out playing conservative and they come out tight center grove is the kind of team is going to go down they're going to go down score on you so hopefully the defense comes out loose and fast and the offense comes out mistake free and they do what they can do center grove trojans led by eric moore he is 205 and 72 in his 22nd year at center grove certainly the school in the community has changed quite a bit since he started there 22 years ago but they have developed into a powerhouse in central indiana and uh coach moore in his 26th year overall of course we talked about tim bless each time we have a telecast tim now with an overall record of 141 and 90 in his 21st year here at columbus north his 23rd year overall north comes off uh they were off last week as all 6a schools were because of the number of 6a schools that are in the in the tournament across the state so their last game as you may recall was at terre haute south 42-21 and the week prior was here at max anders field on october 9th against bloomington north that was a victorious effort by the dogs to 14.

do you roast the pumpkin seeds we do roast the pumpkin seeds we do and we made some ahead of time so i was going to show you that as well yes i don't think i eventually fruit guys are fantastic about 30 seconds left are you do we try to do we attempt to read something no i'm doing my best hi honorable ellis please mention me i got it [Laughter] spaceball come on daughter my mom is over there okay we are at six o'clock today it's gonna start happy birthday i am sriracha yes all right i'm bob ross in case you're wondering a few people guessed that so awesome all right so what are we doing oh so we want to start by saying well first thank you yeah thank you for being here this is awesome uh pretty pretty amazing pretty hungry yeah pretty fun yeah so but what we do want to emphasize please be careful you know we're dealing with knives here we we got some uh some pumpkin carving kits so that we don't hurt ourselves really um i normally do this with a kitchen knife but for safety reasons we're gonna use these and i actually carved a pumpkin earlier let's see them back here yeah and they work actually pretty well a surprise they look like a toy but they actually worked okay so um what else uh this is our first live so please please be gracious actually we should be looking here so please be gracious to us right um anyway you don't know how many takes it takes me for some of my videos so you might find out tonight uh so i do have i do have a dad joke for you but where are we gonna say something mention the thing about what happened earlier do we need to we yeah so what do you call it when you drop your pumpkin a squash [Laughter] so uh and happy birthday to at megan brett three dot three yeah dot three are we gonna sing to her you're the one that's volunteering i can like do you guys wanna sing to to megan i see some people saying sure oh no okay thank you oh no oh the immediate yes yes okay one two three happy birthday to you happy birthday to you at mega breath.3 happy birthday to you and many more okay so awesome we wanted to mention too in case you didn't know um i'm actually on instagram and facebook at dad how do i i think most of you guys know that but just in case so yeah uh so that's how we knew about the birthday so oh tonight too if you can tag us with your pumpkin creations either on instagram or facebook with at dad how do i or hashtag dad how do i that'd be awesome so then we can share your wonderful awesome pumpkin creations and see what ears come up with and then maybe we can share them to our pages yep yep was there anything else that was the main thing okay yeah i think we'll get started just so we don't have this thing going on and on awesome i think there's people joining us i think somebody said from the uk right what time is it there i don't know like two in the morning or something so okay wow thank you daddy okay we'll read that that's not what we're doing okay so here's how you do it you just start for the top and one of the tricks i always do what our director my my wife is directing what safety we we're going to mention cb matching safety again we're messing with tools here so sharp tools or at least you might have sharp tools we have these things yes with plastic handles so hopefully we're gonna actually get through the pumpkin with these but we're just emphasizing safety i said that in some of my other videos too with the jack you know that still haunts me don't ever get under a car that's jacked up by a scissor shack okay so same thing here we're emphasizing safety so much just want to make sure my kids stay safe right so anyway so when you start you just kind of you stick it hopefully you guys got some pumpkins that you're gonna do this along with us so what i normally do too is um when i do it so these things actually work fairly well i just poke it right in oh my gosh these are kind of neat and then you gotta it's a little bit of work without a kitchen knife but i work it around but one of the things i always do on mine is i find out where the face is gonna be right how is that how you doing huh well i know where the face is first okay and then i put a notch on one end i'm like on the back side so i know where the lid goes so that way you're not fumbling with the lid it's not that big a deal but you don't have to keep spinning the lid around to make sure that that fits okay or where it fits so you always make sure it's in the back i always just do it in the back i put it just wherever a circle oh here's another thing too if you've never done this before you want to kind of do it at a bit of an angle right at an angle because i did this when i was a kid if you go straight down what's gonna happen that top's gonna fall right through right so we need to go at an angle so that that lid can fit right on the top okay and i normally just kind of do it and run in square runs i'm working my way across and then i turn i go here you don't have to keep it as a circle necessarily i'm not falling i'm so sorry i'm doing it my own way okay and hers is going to fall right down in because she's not paying attention i'm at an angle really i'm going around though i spin my pumpkin what'd you say mom so hopefully the rest of this doesn't take as long as this part so anyway gosh i'm already sweating power tools how did you get the other one i'm so fast i'm also wearing a beanie i can help i'm almost there my hair is i'm not used to this insulation on my head so it's been a while since i had hair okay so there we go and see how i got that notch there i put a notch in the back so that way i know where it goes so i'm not spinning it around it just fits right in right okay did you want to separate or are we just doing it we'll just do it all together so normally what we do is we normally have two bowls because we save the seeds for um for baking them later so i normally try to pick off the seeds and kind of put the seeds in one let's let's try to do that we're going to separate them yeah okay see the seeds here that's good most of the seeds because there's a lot of this other gunk that you don't want okay yes don't cut and look away please watch where you're cutting put that down okay and surprisingly this tool this little tool here i was making fun of it when i got it earlier but it actually works really well for scraping inside there because if you use a big spoon and you're trying to get the big spoon in there to get it off it doesn't uh you can't get that handle of the spoon in right so so this thing actually works really good just fit right inside and then you just scrape around are we supposed to be interacting with you guys where are you all from oh ice cream scooper i'm sure that's yeah that would work good ice cream scooper right okay so there's the the nasty mess so you want to try to if you can south africa really oh my goodness nice indonesia arkansas portugal wow kentucky nice philippines hey philippines korea oh my gosh you guys are awesome poland los angeles australia holy moly australia louisiana i was born in louisiana australia canada oh my goodness you guys are amazing bahamas scotland well thank you for watching well to speed this along i'm not going to separate the stuff we might be here until tomorrow if i do we can separate it yeah but the seeds are awesome if you haven't uh cooked pumpkin seeds before do you all roast pumpkin seeds do you have any favorite seasonings if so spain mexico brazil argentina oh my goodness what switzerland george i see wow guys incredible sweden whoa peru guatemala there's really actually nobody watching we're just listening random countries this one is too many pumpkins my mom really wanted we live by uh what is it i mean it is a pumpkin patch farm yeah so we're getting close here i am filipino i'm half filipino my mom is from the philippines yes uh she grew up in the philippines and ilocos norte do you want to make it do you want to make an appearance morocco oh i don't know i almost scraped i'm almost there i just have a bunch of seeds at the bottom that scooper does work really well it does i know it's surprising i think we're pretty good so you're not gonna come did you guys dress up oh yeah what are your costumes everyone's feeling like mom everybody's yelling mom everybody's going mom come on mom come on you just got to come over and say hi you don't need to stick your hand in the pumpkin you say hi you gotta get in there she is there's mom here's mom thanks for popping did you wanna say hi oh thanks for watching she's a little camera shy we're going to do a christmas one coming up and she's going to be involved with that when we're decorating so that's going to be that'll be fun yeah there's a lot of fun things we do got some cool things actually that's one of the things we do want to talk about that we got some cool things coming up around the holidays so hopefully you'll be able to join us for those so i'm just about good christine yeah we are going to do christmas cookies we are going to do christmas cookies yeah my mom used to make some amazing christmas cookies and so i've kept that tradition up all these years so i'm going to show you how to do that i think i'm pretty good do you want a paper towel yeah thank you yeah i think i'm pretty much good i just have a little bit of seeds at the bottom all right cool i'm a a death eater from harry potter maybe somebody else should read let's try oh four um costumes yeah okay i got it i thought you were just what other costumes do we have kool-aid that is amazing my mom is philippines she's filipino yes well russia 4am oh my goodness wow that's awesome oh you're wiping yours down i probably should yeah okay so now we're ready to draw the face on there um we have permanent markers it's kind of nice to have an erasable marker but we didn't have any um so the thing when you do this is you want to draw it and you want to um when you cut it you want to remove the line right so so that you're not left with black lines there so you might want to draw it a little bit smaller than what you actually want to cut out okay oh dinosaur i was looking at that too i think i'm gonna you're doing something simple right i'm gonna do something so okay you can do something no i'm just gonna do i think just like shapes for eyes i think i'm gonna give him some teeth or something i'm gonna have one tooth on the bottom let me give them a couple it's so hard to draw on the side of them are you guys having fun it's nice how about that kind of kind of dorky but that's almost nine oh oops but yours looks good no yours looks good where's your nose i don't i don't like a nose on a pumpkin okay so now we're ready to do that awesome same thing so like i said if you just made it smaller you just cut it out now that way you don't leave the black there come on hopefully you don't need to see this i don't know does this help i think so these things are pretty pretty what harmless yeah i mean if you're using a kitchen knife please like don't put your thumb here and be going like this because then if you slip you know hurt yourself these things probably i don't know how they can cut through the pumpkin but it'd be pretty hard to cut through yeah i think i'm gonna make it a little bit of a bigger eye hmm yeah i kind of want it to be a little bigger oh it's getting away from me i know sometimes it goes in a direction of its own [Laughter] there we go so we're going to talk about some of the stuff we're going to be doing while we're doing this or we're going to sure we can't oh no we can keep going i just when i'm using a knife and yeah i want to make sure i'm not going to hurt anything um do you any does anyone have any favorite yes i don't know if you do or don't celebrate halloween fall candies i guess if you do trick or treat i guess you're a lot of people aren't trick-or-treating this year but yeah it's tough here isn't it yeah a lot of things we're gonna have to do differently unfortunately twix yeah do you have a favorite candy bag i like twix i like uh almond joys i love almond juice those are good [Laughter] i like what do i like don't say butter fingers but i don't know if anything i like kit kat milky ways those are good oh can't do you like candy corn i like candy corn kinda yeah a couple [Music] crunches are good okay let's take some time yeah lots of dad jokes we did a dad joke do you have anymore do i have any more i'd have to think um does anyone else roast their pumpkin seeds and if so what do you put on like how do you cook it kind of oh someone's asking what kind of um [Music] music what kind of music do you have what music do you listen to kind of music okay someone's asking love switch foot switch what's my favorite brand our band it's my favorite brand of bands um i like uh need to breathe too you need to breathe is awesome when i was younger i liked sticks sticks was my favorite band growing up um it just shows how old i am and i used to go see you know all the famous bands uh van halen and and yeah yeah rush i saw all the all the things like in concert in concert yeah springsteen saw springsteen a few times too so oh wow well i knew that actually about pretty spring season yeah yeah yeah even though i saw van gaal i don't think i did and eddie van halen just died recently it's kind of sad so um i'm just about done i'm almost there this mouth really got away from me mom's gonna make it too complicated roasted pumpkin seeds tossed in hot sauce oh you know what i was thinking that everything bagel seasoning i think that would be really good yeah somebody just said uh do a dad how do i for the pumpkin seeds we've got a fairly full schedule do we with some of the stuff we got coming up but i might do the pumpkin seeds because i did um i did some pumpkin seeds earlier and uh yeah i think i got a pretty good recipe for him and yeah my son-in-law he he's here too yeah should we have him come over here anybody wanna [Music] [Laughter] okay that was enough we got our two camera shy spouses [Laughter] ryan's awesome he's a great young man so he's five yeah uh yeah so we're i'm pretty much good i just want to remove some of the strings from them so one thing too um i was just thinking of some of the stuff we got coming up i want to show how to make pumpkin pie too because i i've always made pumpkin pie every thanksgiving and i i think i got a pretty good recipe for that it's you know i used the canned pumpkin but i also got my own little special twist twist to this and i usually make my crust by by hand too but um it's a lot of work so i don't know if i'm gonna do that for the video it's up to you anyway so where are we at i'm set yeah yeah here's that so what are we doing now did oh did we oh there are tea lights right there yeah so if we wanted to yeah so we thought this thing was going to take maybe an hour but we we cruise right through it but we'll stay and talk to you guys yeah but now we can actually interact a little bit all right so the tea light what oh at eyebrows i think i'm okay i'm sweating pretty bad yours came out good yeah now what do you guys think oh it's got a little bit of slobber hold on oh can't take him anywhere all right all right so what did i do to get that off i think i used the scraper oh that's smart [Music] mom says hi mom's phone says hi oh do you like any filipino food i like olympia and i like pancit and i like paradise deuce and chicken adobo i'm not a big fan of chicken adobo and here's the reason why um because it's usually made with bones and i'm mama's as far as i'm concerned chickens you don't come with bones do they or no anyway i've gotten so used to this i've gotten so used to boneless chicken that i you know anyway i like to eat i don't like to pick at my food anyway i said bounce it yeah ponzi oh what else what else do you normally make [Music] oh come on all right let's see are you in the usa yes yes yes we're in uh washington state yeah up in the northwest love you dad oh that's nice i love you guys you guys are so incredibly kind and supportive very very grateful northeast washington somebody says oh do people eat this kind of pumpkin or is it only used for halloween decorations um i think you can eat it we um this type of pumpkin called the sugar pumpkin is what they normally use for to to make pie and i'll actually be using this this is one of the things that i do um i'll actually show you how to cook it because then i scrape that out and i mix it in with my with my pumpkin pie because it gives it more texture because the stuff in the can is so how do you say the word pure pureed period yeah puree that it's kind of it's almost too smooth and so i like to add some of this in too because it adds texture to it so there it is and there you go yeah did you already light yours i didn't light it yet did you want to talk about the pumpkin seeds oh yeah so are we going to make a video about that do we want to we want to it's do you guys want would that be helpful for a video on how to roast pumpkin seeds why do we have so many pumpkins that's my wife that's my um so we go and buy a couple pumpkins and then she says we need more pumpkins and then we go back and buy more pumpkins and then she says oh i think we still need some more pumpkins and so then we go and buy more pumpkins so that's why we have so many pumpkins a lot of people do want a pumpkin seed video so you roasted some earlier today so you can just if you want to show i can show you yeah and my dogs are fighting now too so here yeah oh that's right the camera yeah so what i do with it is i um but i can show you how to how to make them um because you need to separate them there's a tricks to that too but you um i boil them actually in butter just a small amount of butter so that they got something for the salt to stick to and then i top it with johnny seasoning and then i bake it at 400 for about 15 minutes and good stuff so dogs what are their names dog's names are squiggy if again dating myself um so he had a like a jerry curl on the front of his face you can bring it squeaky no you know it's fine we gave him a haircut so he doesn't really have the jerry curl but when we first got him he had a jerry curl he has a cherry eye to the poor guy but he had a a jerry curl on the front and so if you're from uh my era there was a show called the vernon shirley and there was lenny and squiggy and squiggy was this small guy that would come in and he was kind of a nerd um anyway so so that's what i did to my dog i made him feel inferior so they're rescued they're rescue dogs though yeah so we like to do that we've had i can't pick up low level it's too big yeah we've had uh four or five dogs um since the kids were little and we always get them at the pound just because we want to figure it's the right thing to do so do you paint do i paint uh the house i've painted the house i don't paint i uh in your costume even though your costume so today you paint well i'm pretending to be a painter today because the trees favorite movie someone asked too favorite movie uh [Music] what's your favorite movie i have the princess bride oh princess bright is awesome i love that i also like school of rock but that's like will rock's good yeah i like school rock i like the lord of the rings series too um because i can watch that several times over i think because i pick up something new each time any car videos of what sort bob ross yes oh they're coming fast and furious now oh gandalf for halloween that's really cool gandalf nice yeah so we did a parody at church uh many moons ago and i dressed up as gandalf there's a dad joke for you there yeah and my friend actually said he called instead of calling me gandalf the gray he called me can't golf that great ah that's pretty funny well in the basketball team you need to pass oh well i don't know if people would get that that's kind of here and no it's not that it's so let's see any book recommendations for book club i mean lord of the rings favorite video you've made so far oh that's a great question do you have a favorite well so um i've had people ask me that in interviews and i think i always go back to the tie just because uh that was the one that kind of kicked everything off and um yeah it's kind of kind of but the thank you video and the you know i i look back at some of that stuff and when my life blew up because like i've shared um i ha i didn't plan on this being what it is i i was scrambling to try to get my head around everything and so it was uh i was pretty emotional when i look back at some of them i'm like oh my goodness it's a little bit cringy um how uh emotional i got and so anyway yeah yeah sorry uncle rick just commented uncle rick's here kenny related to you [Laughter] yes adam kenny is related to me he taught you everything you know as bob ross right yeah yes happy little trees awesome oh i haven't had a dad in 10 years i'm sorry about that you know my heart goes out to you um have you seen the new borap movie nope you guys someone asked watching the mandalorian yeah actually we're talking about watching the mandalorian when we're done here so because this was i'm a big fan nerve wracking oh love you guys too yeah i love you what made you want to i think you answered make this youtube channel oh my gosh how tall okay how tall are you because someone asked that too if i'm just extremely short or if you're just extremely tall and it's both yeah yeah i'm six well you know i'm getting old so i'm shrinking uh i was six three at one time i'm six two now really you lost an inch well i don't know maybe i exaggerated when i was younger uh yeah i'm six six two so oh wow yeah and you're i'm five three yeah on a good day okay dc comics are marvel do you have a preference probably marvel marvel the whole marvel series someone's asking like the pumpkin already huh are we killing you enough with the chitchat do we have the lighters right behind you do you light i light it just in the the thing i just stick the lighter yeah or do you okay yeah you go ahead i put the thing down inside there so sweet so so let me just show you this too like i said so let's see how that you don't have to spin this thing around wondering where it's at you just put that little notch in the back is this oh it should be working you might have to here you go you might it's okay you might have to come through the front oh because it's at an angle oh you got to hold this down girl while you're at it okay that is an intense light thank there they are you can't really tell oh yeah do you want to shut the lights off real fast i think i should yeah um i think just like yeah here can you really tell i would say maybe the front one thanks honey oh look at that [Laughter] nice oh good spooky nice they look good they're friends now is there anything else we wanted to share with these folks um we can wrap it up yeah at 6 30 so it's right around the 30 minute well do they want us to we can hang around for a little bit longer i thought we were going to take a little bit longer to do this but we can answer maybe a few more questions and then yeah is there anything else next yeah we can name the pumpkins frank gus frank and guess frank and gus franken let's see will you do you have done grilling videos someone was asking i did do a grilling video yep so you know every time i do a video i think i could have included that or it could have included that and sometimes i've done videos too where i think people don't even know that some of the stuff is actually hidden within the video like when i did the um and that was early on when i was i didn't know what i was doing i still don't but um when i was doing the how to check the air pressure in your tires there's a lot more to that video if you actually dig in you actually it'll show you how to um look at the size of your tire and how to determine how much air to put in it and what the size of the tire what those numbers mean on the size of your tire so i've actually been thinking that maybe i should split up some of those videos for you because i i think i included too much content and people have asked about the sheetrock screws too that i that i use um but that's hidden in the the one on how to hang a shelf and so anyway i've been trying to think about that you can chunk some of them apart maybe and share them like on instagram and things yeah anyway because i want the content you know when i started this channel i thought i was gonna and like with the tie it was only a couple minutes because you know i've gone to youtube and i've shared this on in some of my interviews i've gone to youtube and you know you have so many bells and whistles going off and you got 20 minutes worth of video you got to watch to get your nugget and so i thought i was going to make short videos that was original right i said let's just try to make them you know two or three minutes long um but some just don't allow for that and so um anyway my drill video i think was 30 minutes 30 minutes long but i included a lot right so i want you to be able to know all the different things that a drill can do so that's that's why totally yeah so awesome yeah favorite halloween movie you know i'll be honest with you i'm i'm not a guy that likes scary movies i like uh what's the fun one that i like the aha the pun the one with all the puns in it do you guys know the one i'm talking about there's a one with a whole bunch of puns i just i was gonna say come on somebody adam kenny love you love you too adam what's the name of that movie with those two guys oh i know what it is tucker nail versus tucker and dale versus evil that's my favorite halloween movie love it i haven't seen it so long oh that's a great movie i recommend that i was gonna say something like it's the great pumpkin charlie brown there's not much there's not much of a commitment there at least it's a half hour and yeah it's really 22 minutes because all the commercials yeah um thanks rick rick says i look good in in my wig nice all right we should probably make a few announcements and wrap things up here um okay coming up in november december unless you wanted to answer some of these no i'm just trying to read them okay sorry i mean we can answer something a little bit yeah we did want to cover a few things so um yeah the pumpkin seeds will end up doing that uh okay so we one thing that's actually really cool and i don't want to uh we don't spoil it we don't want to spoil it but i've got a special guest that's going to come on um and teach you how to do something and what i'm gonna hope to do and i've actually had a couple fairly famous people reach out to me uh to come on my channel um and show you how to do stuff because you know i know how to do a lot of things but i not necessarily the best that everything yeah as you can tell by watching my videos uh and so i think if we can we're going to try to start reaching out to some people and have them come on and show you how to do some cool things so people that you respect and admire for a while yeah so that's pretty exciting yeah so looking forward to that that'll be fun yeah uh are you gonna talk about that or um oh and then looks like we've been getting a lot of that's right the camera's over here mom's reminding me um we've made a lot of recommend in our recommendations requests that's the word we got a lot of requests for the shirts that dad wears in his video um the be good to yourself or that you got this so we're gonna launch a merch store soft launch just to see if y'all if you are interested please comment and let us know um so that'll be coming mid november um is there anything else holiday videos yeah we got some holiday videos but i think we've said that we're gonna do so we're gonna take you to a tree farm and cut down a christmas tree and then bring that back that'll be that'll be fun we're gonna do the um christmas cookies too show you how to do that i'll probably do that as a live too so you can cook christmas cookies alongside us yeah yeah my mom has an amazing recipe yes so it's really good again like i said earlier i want to keep that tradition going okay uh we're gonna do pumpkin pie now we gotta squeeze that in so we've got several things kind of happening and then we're also reaching out to a few vendors uh you know i've got i get people asking me all the time that to come on as to sponsor me and i've shared that with you before that i i don't want to be an infomercial i only want to work with companies that make sense uh that you guys would uh that i would recommend to my own kids right and so that's why i did the simply safe and i've done lows and anyway i've got you would be surprised how many people want me to sponsor or to want to sponsor me um but i don't think you know i don't i don't want to be an infomercial but when the right ones come along i want to do that and then when those come along too uh you know we want to be able to give back so we actually um got a couple few couple giveaways that we're going to be doing around christmas we're trying to figure out what that's going to look like but we're yeah through instagram or through youtube right by the way christine is a huge help in all this so she does a lot of stuff behind the scenes i know i've shared that a little bit before but this thing wouldn't have started without christine she she made it happen encouraged me to do it so hopefully i don't get emotional but um anyway so it wouldn't happen without christine's help and then she also runs instagram and facebook and so to be honest with you i didn't even have a facebook before i only have a facebook just so i could see what she's doing on facebook and i still don't even i still don't even know what i'm doing uh so anyway um she's amazing awesome now you're making me yeah it's halloween okay awesome yeah so we're excited to set that up for giving back to you all you all been so amazing and kind and it's been really sweet to see how kind they've been to you yeah yeah you guys have been more than kind you know um and i'm still trying to navigate what the future looks like i got some amazing opportunities coming up and so we'll see what let's see what happens you know i do have kind of a surprise coming out next year but i can't i'm not really supposed to say yet so that's happening and then i got something else in the works too so anyway lots of fun things yeah and it's all because of you guys you know you guys uh your support and love um has been amazing i i um i'm just i just thought i was gonna help a few people like i've shared before and now i'm getting emotional um and now you know the opportunities that you guys have provided for me is amazing i i can't i can't begin to thank you all right so okay maybe we should we could wrap it up thank you all for hanging out and carving pumpkins we're just chatting alongside and watching us um carved pumpkins we really appreciate you all uh yeah is that it uh yeah i guess no i'm good okay i'm good i just you know it is it's amazing you guys are you guys are incredible and you're the heroes in this i do want to say one thing too um and i shared this in a recent interview too i'm really looking forward to you guys what you accomplish so um and i did this with my own kids when they were growing up is i wanted them to stand on my shoulders and go further than me do do more than me so i i'm really looking forward to 10 years down the road hearing some of the stories that came came out of this right if if it gave you some encouragement to try something that you're scared to do and then now you're doing amazing things in the world so so i that's that's that encourages me um you know if i can just help even just a little bit to encourage you to to um yeah to kind of get out of your comfort zone um because you know nothing gets accomplished in the comfort zone i think that's one of the quotes i've heard but it is true you know you stay in your comfort zone and ah maybe i shouldn't try that i'd i want you to try it you know go try it let's uh let's see and do amazing things together so that's a perfect note i think to wrap up on yeah yeah anyways love you guys we love you guys thank you so much and thank you for your encouragement and thank you for encouraging each other and walk alongside each other you guys are amazing so um thank you yeah thank you all right bye we'll see you next time

so john how do you how do you feel kids 17 16 17 or 18 year olds would would do or manage the the week off going into a tournament contest that's a good question i think i get concerned about it to be honest i never liked a week off when i was that age i didn't ever feel like i certainly never felt like i needed a week off now i feel like i need a week off um you know these kids if they're if they're all healthy then i think playing every week is good for them if they're if they're dinged up and injured you got a couple columbus north guys that are on the sideline tonight um so potentially the week off helps you but i think it feels like you know you and i are in this press box a few weeks ago and it feels like a long time ago and so if you're a football player and you haven't played in a couple weeks it does feel like a long time ago and look at the things that have changed right like the weather tonight we've been out here for four or five or six football games and it's been 75 or 65 and sunny and tonight you know you were giving me a hard time about wearing my sweater vest um with beanie caps on and people covering up because it's it's cold it's in the 40s so this is the first football game they're gonna play in cold weather as well so that's i think that's a factor and you know that cold weather causes you to be a little bit tight so hopefully it won't last too long and they'll get warmed up and get after it center grove led by carson steele he's a four-year starting running back for the trojans carried the ball 167 times this year for 1 117 yards 21 scores david jackson jr quarterback 72 of 122 passes for 1131 yards and 11 touches and connor delt 28 passes throughout the year 554 yards as their leading receiver blake huffman anchors the rushing attack for the columbus north bulldogs just seven games he's played in this year 148 carries and 1047 yards of course not too far behind luke hammonds with 820 yards scampered with 106 carries throughout the year and of course luke is our leading passer with um eight games completed 1198 yards so far this year with a 63 completing percentage 12 touchdowns on two interceptions with the colder weather john do you expect any change in strategy at all i'm sure the kids have been practicing and they were out yeah both in the pouring rain yesterday uh but do you notice that would you anticipate any strategy changes definitely out there yesterday if you were outside yesterday uh you definitely got wet i don't know if they were outside or not um i you know the thing i i like you know yeah they were wet i'm sure both sides it's uh the thing you talked about just now in the stats that's a little bit of a differentiator is you know the hammond's kid can run it right in and and you know we've seen him take off and run a few times he's rushed for over i think he said 800 yards um this is the difference in the two quarterbacks actually the both good quarterbacks we're going to see a good good passing game from both quarterbacks tonight um i think they'll both be they'll come out they look good the center grove kid looked good in warm-ups uh hammond's always you know a favorite you know kind of a favorite of mine he looks good every week and he's you know he's a gamer right so i think if he doesn't see it pass he's going to take off and run with it which is great and it can be a differentiator uh if he if he rushes for 100 and and throws for 150 and huffman does what huffman does i think columbus north will win this football game so i think if him has become i think he becomes a pretty critical everybody thinks huffman is going to you know he's going to rush it down your throat which is going to happen um but if hammonds comes out and he does both i think it changes the game for columbus north um you know coupled with pl playing mistake free football like we talked about earlier center grove defensively led by cam curry who is he's only a junior coach but he uh he is their anchor multiple division one offers for that kid no commitment yet of course just being a junior one of those offers being to ohio state also on the same side of the same side of the defensive line austin booker he's a senior he has committed to minnesota big ten school john what's your what's your approach if you are if you're montgomery or sebastian or branstad or lycans for the dogs and you're going to be facing these these kids that you know who they are you know that they're division one big ten kids what's your mindset going into that is that a is that a a prove it opportunity or is there a intimidation factor there what's your what's your thought i think it's a good it's a really good question but i mean these you got to remember you were talking about a second they're 17 18 years old at this level the kids that are on that are lining up to start on the offensive line are not scared right if you're you're playing 6a football and you're lined up against a kid i don't care where he signed up to go to football school next year minnesota or ohio state and i'm not a huge ohio state fan i love all you guys out there but i'm not a fan um i'd come out to try to you know push him around right i would i would come out and play my best game and uh and i think these i mean at this level these are kind of kids they're going to come out and do that they're certainly not going to show up to get get pushed around themselves so that's what i think got gotta wonder what message of being sent to the that bulldog locker room with the number one team in the state coming into your own home field here last chance for many of these seniors to ever play football let alone here in columbus uh you gotta imagine they're they're fired up they're excited they're this is an opportunity for a lot of those kids to you know if this and i said before columbus north their good football team has lost two games and they were close ones throughout the year this would be a game that you win this one and this this is one people remember for a long time around here if you can pull this one off well you win this football game and it sets you on a road through the playoffs right i mean it it it it doesn't get easier but they're they're getting their tough football game tonight right they're going to get a good team if they win tonight they get a good team next this is as good as they're going to see uh in center grove that's what i think and so if you get through this game and you can keep your discipline about you you can win a lot of football games from here on out two minutes 40 seconds to go before we kick off that's that's a good point one would argue if you can if you win this game you could win any game in any level at the state of indiana especially 6a in the in the tournament speaking of the tournament columbus east is at franklin central tonight the winner of that game would travel likely travel to center grove next week if center grove were to win that would be a home game in johnson county the way that works is the the team will host if they've not hosted a game yet and if both teams have not hosted yet it goes to the bottom of the bracket so that would be center grove in this case if they were to win here tonight if east were to win against franklin central and north were to win against center grove that next week game would be columbus north at columbus east which hopefully we should be fun hopefully we have that opportunity yeah we'd like to see that football game we might have to butt our ways in to be able to call it since we're we don't normally call the east home games but maybe there's some negotiation opportunity there i'm not sure well they played your song metallica's been played live no they're not live they're not here tonight no no but they played your song are you ready for football gonna be it's a good night for football yeah it's a beautiful night for football got a minute left we're almost ready to kick off i was gonna say one thing we didn't talk about we and i think is important is special teams uh looking at the stats center grove's pretty good on special teams they're going to return the football if you kick it to them uh so i think special teams we always say it's a little teeny part of the game and it's really important and i think columbus north actually has a really good special teams program if they kick it well tonight it's going to help them a ton 30 seconds still kickoff here still need to do a coin flip i believe i don't think they've conducted the coin flip yet full moon rising in the east over there coach you see that i do yeah i think it's halloween blue moon it sure is i thought yeah but that might be a photo opportunity to yeah it's a really good one heading over to the to the moon there halloween blue moon it's kind of spooky bad bad moon rising was that spooky ccr yeah this yeah yeah you're a ccr guy i could listen to ccr i could listen ccr often yeah it's good for you yeah i'm glad you know what's good for me and look out for those types of things yeah you need a sweater vest i i don't know i don't know if i agree about that but we can talk about it dress you up a bit looks like center grove will receive the kick away from the board so what do you make of that coach you win the toss you choose to receive is that your statement team you're going to go out and score that's my feeling i i always chose to defer and get in the second half i just prefer to have more possessions in the second half than the first but um but yeah they're absolutely you know if you're i've never coached number one team in the state either so there's very possible that they're out there wanting to score early and prove themselves and put themselves in a position to go on the scoreboard first so so here we go ready for ready for kickoff here at max anders field carter ward teased up on the 40 yard line he's kicking from the north to the south away from the board and here we go round one section eight columbus north versus center grove square kick across the middle picked up at the 12-yard line he's got a lane up the middle he's brought down to 34.

really i mean that that's playing shortstop right there coach i mean 22 scoop that one up on the 10. took off a great return actually 20 yards 22 yards on the return and that you know that's just subtle but in every game you know you squib kick to an average team that ball's we're starting on the 15-yard line that's the difference between good teams and average teams jackson the quarterback gives to steal across the middle for a gain of five carson steele is that as mentioned he is that workhorse for center grove four-year starter at tailback center grove is one of those teams john and i know is coaching youth football that they they run the same offense from peewee league all the way up and these kids know how to do it yeah we got a penalty on the play here to give us to the to the back weems but it won't go see what the call is here back him up looks like the white shirts are walking backwards so a little lean looks like no offsets offsides against the dogs defense wow okay on the first down must have been a neutral zone there a little bit of discussion between the referees i'm not sure it didn't look like they knew who the who the call was on a personnel change for center grove looks like the dogs will counter by subbing out savion banks and putting in another db first and ten balls on the 45-yard line jackson to steal oh he bounces outside you gotta tackle them good block on the edge hold flagged down for a hold here in the 50s that's going to be a hold on the on the edge block look like a good block from anybody it looked like you might have grabbed a calf muscle or shoelace or something held on to him a little bit too long i think yeah that's a big deal that's a 20-yard roughly 20-yard gain reversed it sure is that helps the bulldogs a little bit there um makes up for the five-yard encroachment penalty a lot of personnel subs here by the trojans showing blitz here for the dogs it's first and 17 balling 38.

linebacker's back up jackson back to pass turn turn turn yeah good catch the ball is caught at the 31-yard line be a first down yeah that was that was actually well defended he's got it he's got a turn you see the receiver going up to catch the ball you got to get you got to get your arms up in there and turn around and he just turned around a little bit too late along with the catch there for the trojans mason long of 6'3 185 senior i think that was charlie winnick there on the defense i think long just went over the top of charlie who is not 6'3 still trying to get outside here for the trojans pushed out of bounds for a short game a little game great at it no gain good pursuit there by columbus north yeah really good really well defended stretch it out second and ten now balls on the 31 of columbus north 10 24 remains here in the first quarter no score jackson in the gun swing pass back to pass nope he's gonna oh oh down ball down picked up by the he lost it now wait for the signal here yeah his third down and it was recovered by center he just slipped over it he just slipped over it you know the fans are going crazy this is one of those things fumbled fumbled football on a cold night versus fumble football and a sticky hot night absolutely it does not react the same to your jersey right you you go down he did a nice job trying to cover it up but you just slide right over top of it that was that mistake we were talking about that fumble would have been a huge play for columbus nord brings up third and 17 now jackson in the gun steel offset back to pass he's got time oh good football knocked loose in the middle nice play bring up fourth down that is a great play by mr holt really good really good number seven looked like he was a step behind him it looked like it was a step behind him that was a good it was a good ball from jackson right there um and we just looked at the replay it was definitely a slippery jersey on the fumble yeah we got a little bit of a delay in the feed here which is great for us to be able to go back and watch a play and replay fourth and 17 and then late substitution here by sign grove and they're going to run out of time on that play clock yes they did maybe intentional it might have been intentional yeah i'm delighted about five yards back him up i think that's okay for center grove you want five more yards right here jackson lined up there to punt i don't i've not done enough research on this team to know if he really punts or not but i know he's their division one quarterback now we know he can throw it fourth and 25 now from the 43 of columbus north jackson will punt that ball away offset to the right actually oh good bounce take a columbus north bounce will be down about the 18.

yep good really good bounce i'll give the center rope team credit though i i mean that that bounce was hard to cover these these kids you can tell they've been through every drill known to a football player they cover the bad bounces and hustle down the field really well columbus north will take take over here that's a good stop john that's exactly what this column is what they need to do absolutely gave us to huffman up the middle short game for about two the standard mr huffman left mr up and right you got about five five yards four yards four yards good first run the second six now 857 remains on the game clock here first quarter ball in the 23. 0-0 is your score two back look for the dogs here maybe two yards redmond to carry that time little cowbell on third down that's always helpful third and four trips to the right this time eight twenty two on the clock and running now motion for blythe james to pass receptions made guest setter a little out a little out they cast center for about seven yards really good play nice catch nice throw really good first pass from from hammond that's a tough ball right there a lot of confidence there yeah that's a tough pass first one the first one of the game that's that's a tough throw to make 91 and 94 those two division one big ten kids i was telling around the same side of the ball non-factory so far it's a screen pass out to blyth just as i say that but it looked like it felt good 94 went all the way out 95 the booker kid going to minnesota to the sidelines pursuits and gets all the out there in the hash and makes that tackle i'm life bring up second six that was that was a pretty impressive play he's quick not a real you know he's a looks like a tall kid not a real thick kid you know so he's pretty quick pretty agile it'll be fun to watch him tonight huffman in motion to trips now and ham is going to try to run it that scampering head he gets gets a couple yeah three heavy two maybe two i'm gonna bring up third and call it six 37 yard line looks like center grove runs there their anchor defensive lineman that we talk about to the field side they're going to flop to the field every time two by two formation now late motion oh there we go that's five yards and they got number 94 jumping got booger to jump off sides he's excited that makes it third and one a short one too booker's listed at six six two four five yeah he looks like a slender athlete yeah he's he's he and he's you can tell he's quick it'd be fun to watch him trips with a tight end here third and one for the dogs huffman with the carry and he's gonna stop short tried to bounce it and got nowhere punt team will come out play the field position game 608 and counting here points away end over end that's gonna still rolling good bounce good down to the 16.

still moving coach it is still moving 15 and a quarter the ball turned into a turtle for a minute just crawl down to the 16 yard line from the 20. well you said it field position game on the center of that last drive they had one one big gain down the sideline other than that dogs held them and see what they come back with here yeah i think if you're columbus north i i don't know that they feel good about their own drive right there but i think they feel good about the first probably feel good about the two possessions the fact that they're starting back on the 18 or the 16 now and they learned a little bit so this is good deep motion for the trojan steel with the carry across the 20 and brought down about a gain of five yeah it's our guy it's good look like uh mr king got in on that one too a little bit i missed coach mr king i thought he got you can call me mister thank you yeah we're gonna call him mr king the only way he would change his name is if he gets beat deep and i don't think that's going to happen second five now great stopped after again lofton looks like lofton was running in there quick lofton on the stop williams on the carry for center grove another third down here xavier big savion banks number 51 coming in the game my boy and yours savion banks i love him double tight formation here for center grove tackle and he's gonna be short of a first down yard short he got a couple he got a good spot but he's still short a lot of confidence they're running on third and four he's got a really good spot still short though a few few fans in front of us notice that spot as well coach fourth down doesn't look like it i think they're just gonna they're just gonna go for it you gotta watch the ball here they might be just trying to get a quick jump quick five yards hopefully everybody plays the deep discipline i got it close yeah yep there you go that's gonna be a first down extra half a yard that's uh that is a tough call right there gutsy that's uh we're the number one team in the state play yeah we're gonna we're gonna rush it on third and one on our own twenty-five twenty-five yeah on the road you'd call that wouldn't you on the road uh if i had the number one team in the state maybe likely in the first quarter you can still make up for it certainly yeah first and ten now for the trojans 356 remains ball rests on the 27 yard line jackson back to pass good good tackle he's got his receiver got to get on top of that one though 15 trenton v he's a 5 10 165 senior for the trojans that'll be a first down he had the game winner last week coach oh yeah yeah yeah he said he knew he was gonna get it yeah in the newspaper that's he he was all excited he said he walked up and looked at the corner and knew he had the game winner yeah good for him yeah see if that happens tonight first and ten jackson's gonna give to wayne's this time he's buried yeah that's great defense right there got to feel good so far if you're wearing blue that front four oh the front seven columbus north doing a good job establishing the line of scrimmage well if you notice coach columbus north is is showing showing uh blitz and then backing out of it and that last play you know maybe they're thinking okay they're showing blitz they're gonna back out we're gonna rush it straight at them and right in their weakness because when you show that bliss it potentially makes you a little bit weaker for a second when you back out of it and uh maybe they're thinking that's what they're gonna do there but jackson back to past down the field this time and that's caught yeah good catch they went back to that again that was caught by connor delp 51175 senior for the trojans for a first down that's not his that's not his first catch coach uh i think connor's got uh four or five hundred yards receiving this year so he's he's had the ball thrown to him before us what you're saying yeah four he's got uh he had 550 coming into the game tonight so he's yeah he's been down in the middle i believe that's the same route that they tried uh down in the end zone or near the end zone a minute ago that was deflected late well they saw what we saw you know uh holt got there on that broken up play the last play a little bit late right he got his hand in but he got there a little bit ball was a little bit late getting in there too yeah and so what they saw is he got there a little bit late so they come out and they throw the same pass thinking he's gonna probably be late again and we're gonna beat him again so he'll make up for it holt's good player he'll learn something there a little shovel pass there to weems is good for eight yards to bring up second two on the 22 yard line 157 remains here in the first quarter no score dogs load the box jackson back to pass in the middle he's got a receiver in the in the end zone and that's touchdown yeah that's just that's just they buy in the play fake right so if they buy the plate fake it looks run heavy run actually and uh he's wide open actually up the right side right hash connor delp on the reception there for the trojans for for the score first score of the game austin watson on the kick kick is up and good good mr good austin watson mr watson watson so so yeah you're just doing it if i jumble through one of them and you're doing it messing up right it's the one that's not written down so for all you advertising folks out there coach typically gets the advertising tattooed on his arm at the end of the season if it goes well so yep yep you always raise the money for the school pick your own colors yeah you get to pick the tattoo yeah so coach what do you think about sleeves tell me about sleeves did you ever wear sleeves as a player mr watson with the kick i can't can't miss the opportunity with the return on the back brought down at the at the 18.

that's is no sleeves or no sleeves on cold leaves or no sleeves as a football player did you have a temperature threshold i mean is it was it like you looked at the you know were you even the guy did you even look at the weather did you know if it was going to be cold or not yes everybody looks at the weather if they tell you they don't they're lying to you okay do you does it do you dress differently because of it that's a whole different question well did you did you wear sleeves or didn't it's based on position well you your center right i played center and linebacker and no there were no sleeves matter of fact never the same you're from northern indiana you wore the same undershirt yeah every tire that's definitely true i agree remote or ice or anything right you got to always have the same undershirt i understand that in in our case it was an undershirt that you wore in july so you're not wearing a sweatshirt in july so they're there's your answer oh another flag on the outside of the perimeter there hook block we'll call that otherwise known as a hold i'm coming back again i won't go so far i suggest that we made fun of the kids that wore sleeves those you mean the skilled position players but i'll lead into asking you john did you wear sleeves under your uniform once it broke 60.
