chairman you have a quorum thanks carol and bid joint don't i'm here thank you yes thank you everyone after we uh stand for the pleasure that's a real flag time i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice so for anyone that's out there good evening welcome to our four best showcase meeting as you may be noticing we're in a slightly different format tonight uh which is part of the showcase a little bit we're using our live classroom technology here at norton um uh mr pasaro's room uh so what you see here is uh jeff and i up front by the smart board in the room we have our board members in the background is marlene uh with that being said we're going to move on to our special recognition so if he gives a second we're going to mow you on over to the next to the next room it's a little bit of a walk tonight so you guys can stay here and watch it okay marlene's gonna facilitate that do you know what's going on here yeah yeah you're always on we are live first is so mr parenting said this evening we have special recognitions and we take great pride in being able to meet the needs of all students in our school systems not only academically but socially emotionally and that takes on many forms and so when we're recognized for our academic academic achievement it's great but when we're recognized for achievement outside the economic realm particularly with a program like mr jeffrey is about to describe it's an incredible source of pride for us so this is really a special evening for a special event and with some special staff here to celebrate that with us so without further ado i'm going to pass it over to highland school principals mr jeffrey and this is the quick little miss bordenaro thank you mr sullivan um first i want to introduce our team i uh we have jen calvo stephanie loomer ali ranchito and erica bordenero they're part of our core team and one person who is not here is a key player is lisa rettenberg but this is our core team who started with us three years ago we started with unified sports and continued through a grant through the ciac each year we were able to secure additional grant money to be able to support our um our students so our special needs students and their typical peers partnered off uh throughout the different grade levels so right now we typically work with about 20 students all together we each year we're scheduled for one session we've expanded to two sessions the fall and spring session where students are engaging in sports activities together and through the unified national unified champion school program we've also been able to explore leadership opportunities for our students and also whole school engagement so that's what we're really proud of i'm proud of our team it's not just the three or four of them but it really is active engagement by our entire faculty who is uh really owns this program so i'm proud of them and so really congratulations to them for this special award this special award emotional unified champion school award this recognition is given to us through as we're one of 38 schools across the country right now that were recognized by espn as a honorable school we're one school in connecticut that was brought up to a national level uh there are other national winners but uh highland is recognized as a representative for connecticut so we're really proud so i know i applaud [Applause] been a long year i have the board to have all the parents in our community community in general thank you thank you for the dedication you put in highland for special olympics program i know many happy parents and other students as part of this they couldn't be happier so well deserved uh and i think it's one of the few bright spots i hope you agree that you had this year i might have code in that despite this is still successful so we have a certificate from the special olympics international because the shriver who's the champion so i'm going to present this to jeffries of [Applause] if you'll bear course us after that recognition we're gonna head over to another room for our next recognition thank you very much ladies and gentlemen thank you congratulations walk across my home all right well thank you for joining us across the hall it's exciting to have this virtual meeting where we can come to you from many locations and so as i indicated in the last room that we were in it's obviously a special moment to recognize our students and our community for making an impact in the lives of children not just in the classroom but also you know with social emotional and athletic events but this is uh another incredible achievement for our school system tonight very few communities in the united states get to say that they have a blue ribbon school it takes a world of dedication to helping every student every single student achieve at high levels so less than a fraction of a percent of american schools get recognized for the blue ribbon award so we have a brief video for you to kind of highlight what makes norton elementary school so special and then we have a special guest that i'll introduce momentarily to uh share a special citation as well who's controlling what's on tv kelly is now right here hmm good so what's next is the mandalorian season one yes and then i can finally get to season two yeah it's only one episode [Music] season two yeah i do you know star wars [Music] and then rebels is four seasons he's there on the audio issue thankfully thankfully you know there was quick intervention but there is definitely a learning curve to all of this technology and we appreciate everybody's patience and we'll start that we'll take that video from the top again again it's a pretty quick video so enjoy a positive culture and an environment where students want to come to school to learn norton staff members are progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups we're so proud to have you in our community keep up the great work the entire membership extends its very best wishes on this memorable occasion thank you so much [Applause] thank you delegation for uh helping put this together and signing it as the first one i've seen since i throw in the board on behalf of the board of vet and all rhythm you did this because it's in your dna and for folks at home they're watching uh you have kids in the school system you know how great our schools are we talk about that but i think even better you know how great our teachers are educators and support staff so thank you well deserved i had you honored seeing this about a month ago happy to say it again [Applause] my wonderful staff are incredibly dedicated and ambitious staff thank you for for the recognition like i i said the day that received the award um on behalf of the school we don't go in every day and looking for recognition like this but it certainly is nice for their hard work to be to be noticed and we're very very grateful for it and for our students who are so hard working as well and our great families and send us these wonderful kids so it's it's a community award we all this is for all of us so congratulations again ladies uh representative uh sup kiss thank you raymond i apologize yeah um it's been a long week for all of us but thank you so much for doing this and on behalf of the delegation uh congratulations again ladies now if you'll bear with us another moment we're going to go into another room and we have a special presentation about our elementary school technology thank you oh good foreign i'd like to know if you all can hear me kevin can you tell me if they're giving us the thumbs up yes thank you ah thank you so much a couple glitches you're doing okay well thank you all for being here tonight tonight we are our board meeting tonight is the elementary showcase and i'm very happy that we have a wonderful delegation of teachers here from all over the district to share with you about our broadcast system as well as a technology tool called seesaw so without further ado i'm going to turn this over to ali kennedy who's going to begin our presentation with you this evening thank you ally thank you hi everyone i'm allie kennedy i am a grade 2 teacher here at norton i have the remote classroom um so we have a couple of features in our classroom that help our remote learners learn um with our in-person learners there are cameras um speakers and microphones that are in the ceiling and i also have this microphone which you can see um over here this that's around my neck um during the day and then i can project my voice to them and they can hear me at home and this also gives my students at school a better opportunity to jeremy um with the speakers that are on the ceiling there are also microphones in the ceiling so that kids can collaborate with one another so the kids that are in school can be heard by the kids that are virtual michelle do you want to say hi hello everybody so that gives us the opportunity for the kids to go back and forth no matter if they are home or at school they can still talk to one another and so our day-to-day schedule um okay so i'm christine your phone i am the remote teacher in grade 3 at highland and a big component of our day is making sure that the first thing the students see on seesaw is the daily schedule so just like within the classroom students walk in and displayed on our smart boards we have our morning message which matches our responsive classroom practices so when students log into seesaw they will see options like you see on the left hand side of my screen they see their journal their activities they see an icon that says inbox and inbox is where they will find their morning announcement for the day within this morning announcement they'll see a brief message from their teacher the daily schedule which includes times what special they have what subjects in order that we're doing for the day and also really importantly they'll see our learning targets learning targets are our objectives for each lesson and they are posted within the classroom so it's really important for the students at home to see those learning targets to understand what should i be able to do by the end of the day it's also a reminder of what work should be submitted by the conclusion of the day and also any necessary google meet links as well so when they click their inbox this is an example morning message and it's on two slides so on top you'll see an example of a message from a teacher highlighting something that was covered the day before so in this one you know i i expressed that i was excited to read their notes about the arctic that we took um in our writing unit and if we continue to move down you'll start to see the daily schedule so you'll see the morning meeting what our share is going to be for the day we're reading the book wonder so we're focusing on kindness um and then you'll continue to see the subject areas so for example from 9 20 to 10 25 we will be working in math and listed next to it is our learning target the learning target i can round two and three digit numbers to the nearest ten i on i'm sorry to the nearest hundred on a vertical number line science as we move through we'll see also that we're identifying what organisms need to survive and what organisms needs to survive in different habitats you'll even see physical education and telling the students to go to mr webb's message into seesaw class as well so they know that they need to then transition to a different class and you'll also just continue to see the learning objectives throughout the day then you'll see the end of the day work semester submission checklist so this is for the students to understand what they need to have turned into the teacher by the end of the day math exit tickets the organism sort using on tci our new science curriculum program that's digital the reinforced notes we're taking in writing a reader's response by the end of the day so this um this schedule and this announcement really sets the stage for the day for these students they understand what their goals are for the end of the day they understand what work they're going to need to be completing and they understand where they're expected to be at what time and finally they'll see their google meet link posted at the bottom so all of the information is listed for them and it allows them to also foster independence we're really hoping that they're able to understand where they need to be what they need to do throughout the day these announcements can also be sent to families not just the students but also to the parents so the parents also understand what the students will be completing throughout the day which at the elementary level is very helpful for them so they know what their child is doing at what time during the day so the morning announcements in the inbox and this that is sent to the kids every day really helps the students understand what their school day is going to look like even though they're not in the actual classroom so now i'm going to send it back to allie hi again so i'm also gonna highlight um the program that we use for seesaw so as second grade um in second grade we focus a lot on phonics and we focus on different um patterns that students are focusing on for reading what we did in the beginning of the year we focused on a long a sound a i and a y um and so i had previously used an activity like this in previous years where students would just color in the chunk and follow those directions and they would read it in their head unfortunately because there are 20 students when they're reading it in their head during morning work i can't always go around and see if they're reading these words correctly seesaw gives me a really unique opportunity to be able to hear every single word that the students are reading and then i can understand if they're having any um difficulties with a certain pattern so i will play you a very cute example day [Music] so that's just a quick little example um you know as i said in previous years they would just color in that chunk and they would i would hope that they would read in their head as i'm walking around but this really gives me a better understanding of where they are at that particular um area and then finally we also do readers responses so when we focus on a piece of text for a unit we will read it together and then the kids will have to look into the text to try to answer a question to show that they are comprehending the text now in second grade especially in the beginning of the year we are either um able to have them write their response or they can say their response but again because there are 20 students sometimes it's hard to go around and make sure that they are all giving me that verbal response so seesaw is awesome for being able to give students that ability to record their response into their journal and then i can listen to it later on and make sure that they understand the skill the happy lion walks into town because he wanted to say hi to his friends so he wrote it and recorded it which is even a bonus and so they can show that they are really owning their own learning as we say at norton and um showing their skills in those ways i'll pass it back good evening everybody i'm kevin hanlon the cooking coordinator and susan squire a first grade teacher at chapman elementary school um shared with us two video clips to talk a little bit about and talk a little bit about fostering a classroom community and also some of the instructional approaches that she uses with both remote and in-person students my daily goal as a teacher who teaches students in school and students learning remotely from home is for my remote learners to be treated the same as my students learning in the classroom i always say to my students that even though some children are in the classroom and some children are at home we are one classroom family i teach live throughout the day with the exception of lunch recess mass breaks and specials however music art and library are students as well during independent reading and during independent reading and reading conferences i turn off the microphones so that we are all reading this also gives me the opportunity to read with individual students in the classroom as well as having conferences through a separate google meet length with my students learning remotely i would like to share with you a couple of examples of how i include and engage my remote learning students to feel part of live instruction good evening i am susan squire for foundations lessons or phonics lessons that entailed reviewing short vowels i pulled out and pulled up my slides that show um the different sounds for the short vowels and then we practice blending sounds to say words so what i can do for so that my remote learners at home can see my screen as i pull up a smart notebook page as well and have it side by side and so i want the children to join me in practicing to say the sounds of one of the sounds for example i would write the letter and i would say sound they would say sound they would say and then they would blend and they even say that that if i just wrote that word and i pointed to the first sound they wouldn't be able to see it so as i write each letter they're able to see it and join me and the class in blending the sounds to say words that's just a small example of a foundations lesson i would also like to show you a sample of a ranking lesson so we just finished our writing unit two in formative one unit in which we learned about spiders and that part of the unit uh was to take notes so in order for my children at home to be engaged at the same time as my students in the classroom i once again had a book ready virtually here that i would pop over the screen and i would maybe turn to a page in which i wanted a model um taking notes or to have the children take notes and i would read for example spiders can be big or small they can be brown or black some spiders are red orange green or yellow and then i would um i can minimize my screen the same way i did for foundations bring up a page in my smart notebook file and then this would start for example spiders for a class collection of notes the children learn that you take notes by either writing words drawing pictures with a label or join complete sentences so i write model by writing words and writing big or small indicating the size of spiders as i write the children not only in the classroom but the children at home can see me writing at the same time so these are just two little examples of how i engage students at home and in the classroom at the same time and our day starts with morning meeting where we um get together as one classroom family and we start our day with listening to the chapman morning announcements and then we have our morning meeting which begins with greeting each other to begin our day of interaction and engagement thank you for listening for foundation okay i'd next like to invite michelle earley who is a grade 3 teacher here at norton elementary school [Music] hello everyone i wanted to take you through a day in math in the life of a third grader we have many different things that we focus on and again we start with our daily target which is listed on the board and then there are several interactive parts of the day where students work with me or with each other we work on fluency we develop a concept and then they use a problem set and an exit ticket you'll notice that i also give them an option when finished so they know that they can go on zern or do a different math enrichment activity our fluency is very interactive we sing songs and we practice group counting all right so we're going to start off by singing the eights on to have our brains remember some of those multiplication facts thumbs up if you're ready good thumbs up remote friends if you're ready good all right here we go here we go [Music] oh all right so now remote friends you're going to have the opportunity to type in your answers and in-person friends we're going to say that numbers so i'm going to say the first time where everybody gets your brain ready for the second number eight so now the remote friends type in the next number after 16.

here uh kathy molinaro here sorry catherine hodgson here uh rich giannelli here al russo here amy spelino here everyone is here okay thank you uh before we um before i turn this over i was just like to take time and thank the superintendent his administration the board mostly mr washer and our who is our assistant superintendent for putting this workshop together uh for us tonight our goal is to keep everyone informed about the decisions on reopening of our schools and have a discussion with all involved parties to that help makes this decision concerning reopen school this is just a discussion um no type of action is going to be taken tonight but i think we need to understand uh what the practice is and as far as making a decision to close or reopen schools so i just want to thank all the board members thank dr sale mr watson and um cara from uh prunty from city hall and kathy o'donnell who has been with us from the start and everybody else about the phone who all whoever else that dr sam and mr watson have on this uh video tonight so without further delay uh i will turn this over to dr sarah or mr wasser uh kevin let me just i'll start for a minute thank you kevin and group for putting this together i've been in absence here with us so i appreciate it it's great timing uh great timing uh you all know what happened on the 26th we were all set to go back uh we had been looking at the data um we had a good window to to be able to return our numbers were you know they were not low but they weren't zenith of our experiences and so with that we thought it was a very low risk to bring everyone back and we organized ourselves to do that um and you know what happened friday uh that friday we received some late calls regarding the um in our number of uh cases and uh we sat down with an entire group went through uh everything and decided for safety reasons we would just maintain the status quo and pause our opening and we've been monitoring ever since um now you know reading the paper is no news you know what's going on in connecticut going to phase two the town's in phase two um if you read the papers uh yeah bridgeport new haven many of those places are now moving towards red um tonight i think it'd be uh worthwhile we start with a presentation from um uh cara brunty uh we have a disaggregated by category because one of the things you know as you looked at the information at your last board meeting when you look at the numbers or other circumstances regarding mitigation strategies distancing that you can return with different um applications of reopening and that's one of the things that the state has been providing they calculate now on a two-week average and cara i'm sure we'll talk with that so all those things will come within the factors i think cara actually has it up in her presentation so uh with that i will uh let kara begin or kevin if you want to say anything um then we'll begin with cara so so dr sal i just want to say quickly um as always we want to thank cara prunty for joining us this evening and continuing to partner with us in this work dr fong and dr beg we also want to thank you for joining us we appreciate your partnership and and and and advice along the way throughout this process um and we and we're looking forward to your feedback this evening i'm just gonna try and share my screen here so just bear with me a second if everybody would turn their unmute it would be helpful one second okay so i'm just gonna go through some of the numbers some of the data that we have for positive cases in danbury and i'll go through where we pulled the information and all i want to do is share the data that i get with you guys so um i'm just going to start so what we're seeing here this is a daily summary of cases since the beginning when we started getting cases back in february and march this is our this is by date by event date which is essentially the specimen collection date so it's the date that someone is tested that's why you can see at the um the side here where it says november 1st where you see a little bit of a downturn that doesn't mean that we're actually decreasing in numbers that just means that that that data has not come in yet because that goes by the day that they were tested so people who are tested on november 1st we haven't received a lot of those results yet so as you can kind of see from here where we were at back in the spring when we were at our our peak then we went through we decreased over the summer we had very low numbers and then as we saw um our our spike in august when the advisory went out we kind of stabled off and then as you can see right um starting october you know eighth we're kind of at a steady increase in numbers there so this is just uh the weekly summary of that so you can see again our since the week of october 5th and october 11th we've just been steadily increasing in our case numbers and then this is the total um number of cases by age group again since january um when we started getting you know some feb well february when we first started our our cases but we pulled the data in case there's any that we missed or any that were updated um so our you know biggest impacted group that we've been seeing um is the age range between 30 and 49 these two age groups have had the highest number of cases this is a monthly summary of cases so as you can see our total number uh of cases for october um has now exceeded what we were seeing in both march and may um so we're kind of you know we're seeing a trend of increased numbers you know august we had our our spike we saw the same thing happened in september we kind of stayed the same and then in october we started seeing increases now i just wanted to go over this because this is um an age breakdown and i apologize i keep reaching over because i'm looking at this on my other computer screen so i can see it bigger um so this is an age breakdown four week positive cases by age group so we wanted to do this because we wanted to see we like to compare where we're seeing increases in by age range um so you can kind of see uh again still typically our biggest age group that we are seeing the largest number of cases is the age range between 30 and 49 but as you can see towards the end of october 18th through the 25th and then through the second um you know we're just seeing a large number of cases and we did see an increase in cases with some of our younger age groups as illustrated by the november second day you can see we had 24 cases in the 0 to 9 age group now this is our positivity rate by age so we're kind of seeing this goes through you know the number our positivity rate is calculated by the number of tests that were conducted um by the number of positive cases that were received so we did that we broke down the number of children that were tested between the ages of zero to four five to nine ten to fourteen fifteen to nineteen and twenty to twenty four so um and this is uh the the change that we saw in october so our positivity rate for zero to four um decreased a little bit for our youngest group and we saw increases in the age range of 5 to 9 15 to 17 and 20 to 24 and a slight decrease in positivity rate for 10 to 14.

so call the meeting to order roll call dennis bender here donna davis here maria oppara here rick rolling here wilson so here uh uh mr so can you lead us in the pledge of allegiance i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all kylie do we have any public comments for turning to close session we do members of the board of trustees i feel the need to speak to you on behalf of a buddha members before you go into closed session today i know that during closed session you will be speaking about negotiations regarding the assistant superintendents tonight's agenda has you voting to add another year on an already existing two-year contract to the assistant superintendents giving them a raise and most importantly has you changing the number of votes it will take by this board to terminate them if necessary this concerns avuda for a number of reasons first the assistant superintendents still have two years left on their contract what is the rush is it because we are experiencing a change in the board and it needs to be done quickly second the assistant superintendents want a raise a buddha never says anything about admin getting a raise after we receive one they deserve it because they work hard however we are always hearing how low the avusd budget is and how they can't afford to pay the teachers what they are worth but we never hear anything when site or district admin asks for a raise for four people they are asking for a raise of two percent including back pay to 2019 and with their high salaries two percent is quite a lot we are asking that you at least question it because our raises are always questioned third the one we are most concerned about is the changing of the number of votes by the board needed to terminate them the district wants to go from the majority percentage of votes to super majority percentage of votes to my knowledge every other thing the school board votes on is a majority vote majority voting has always worked for the avusd school board in the past why is this changing all of a sudden avuda is urging you to either oppose agenda item h six through eight altogether or ask for some serious amendments to the contracts so that it can be voted on in a future meeting we appreciate your time and consideration in this matter dr christie croft avuda president do you have another one that's it yes now we need to go into closed session to discuss the following people personnel annual review ar each of these events were well received and had a lot of participation we are also already in the process of planning more events which you will all hear more about as they are announced online events have not been limited to asb though our cougar tutors have also expanded their online services their most recent expansion has been group tutoring sessions which allow students to be tutored in groups instead of on their own this provides students with an easier way to form study groups and potentially brings in students who may have been afraid to come on their own we believe it will greatly contribute to the further growth of our tutoring center while these groups have focused their efforts online our sports teams have been practicing in person as county conditions permit all of our teams that have been practicing have made great progress considering the circumstances and seem to be preparing well for competition we anticipate great successes once we are able to compete now this truly would not be an update about granite hills if i did not take a moment to discuss the amazing effort all of our teachers and staff have been putting in to make sure we continue to receive a quality education teachers and staff have been very supportive and helpful during this time and everyone at granite is very thankful for them i anticipate that by the next time we speak i will have even more great news about granite to tell you for now though thank you all for your time tonight always remember maroon and gray lead the way thank you very much erin good afternoon esteemed board thank her for her dedication to students staff and our community i do appreciate that she always is taking a compassionate look at whatever csea has brought forth to this school board your style of leadership will be missed i would also like to congratulate mr bender on his run for trustee having no contest in my opinion it displays the confidence the public appreciates and his contribution to this school board csea will be looking forward to the coming years of teamwork with the school board superintendents and staff to better serve our students and community our csca chapter is very similar to the school board and will also have a change in leadership in january and our elections will be in december i feel confident that the relationships csea has built on will continue to grow to meet the needs of the staff and the students as we build a better tomorrow i wish to relish the moments from all the knowledge i have learned and the great people i have worked with i realized cobra kobit has hampered us a bit but it seems all levels of our staff are outperforming other districts in my opinion this district has set the tone for a safe normalization of our educational system csea and i are proud to have been a small part of this process and i thank you for listening suggesting and agreeing with a lot csea has offered to the table on the table tonight we hope the district will present a request to reward those who came and served those few months last year starting march 16th to june 30 2020 many other districts gave compensation to employees that shown up in an uncertain time our members showed up not knowing the outcome but with the dedication to the families in our community we think the money is there and the funds and it is a small token for the hard work that was performed this would be a great way to show gratitude in these expensive times we would appreciate a favorable direction from the board to be supportive of this request i am so proud to be part of the work all the staff has put in the hours and the willingness to try new things i am really excited about the positive input on student care and i hope it can find a way to stay after the pandemic disappears thank you for allowing me to have a say please have a great thanksgiving and stay healthy mike kaufman csea chapter 828 president do you have anything from apple valley unified teachers association i do um it was requested to present the board with a picture uh before the speech i have provided in front of you all face down uh image that you can refer to that will be referred to in this additionally miss davis there is a gift that um is before you right there and that is also going to be referred to in this as well thank you members of the board of trustees and district admin the last two weeks have been busy and exciting for some of our teachers we have welcomed back some of our students to in-person instruction during the next few weeks we will welcome back more it was great to hear the stories of the butterflies in teachers stomachs as they approached the first day of in-person learning the stories about the first days with their students and to see pictures of their classrooms avuda is happy to see the progression and hopes that it will continue as planned also wants to give our sincerest thanks to board member donna davis as she leaves her position to go travel with her husband we appreciate your support over the last eight years and we will miss you avoda dropped off a token of appreciation with kylie late this morning to give to you at this meeting happy trails however i come to you tonight with one major concern i know for a fact that one site did not get supplies for each other kinder students that came back for in-person instruction in some cases not even enough for half of a classroom like eight boxes of crayons we were assured that every child that returned to in-person instruction would get the supplies they needed for the classroom the teachers asked and asked and what they were getting and they were not informed until a box showed up in their room on thursday and friday i have attached a picture of what they received for a class of 24 students since this is a kinder classroom they asked for whiteboards and markers since they can't work in groups and are not using technology and we're told no they need something to interact with their students so i personally went out and bought 120 whiteboards 120 whiteboard markers 120 pencils 48 pencil boxes and devouda donated 120 whiteboard erasers i spent around 300 because i wanted them to start the first week out on a positive note on friday before they started after being told no they did receive half of a set of white whiteboards and half of a set of whiteboard markers this is not acceptable during this time students should not be sharing anything the teachers should know what they are receiving for their students avuda and the teachers were assured at the in-person committee meeting and during the school board meeting that supplies for our students were not going to be an issue apparently they are with this site this site has problems getting normal supplies they need on a regular basis and have to literally grab pencils for their students when they can because they are often told no when they ask for supplies the teachers at this site are spending money out of their own pocket because they cannot ask for donations and their site refuses or gives them minimal or inadequate amounts if this is happening at one site is it happening at others a buddha negotiated in good faith not requiring the materials for protection to arrive before awsd started the process of returning to school sites but if awsd can't get the supplies for the kids or the teachers why did we start so soon i am begging you to look into this site asap and to get the teachers what they need i am also asking that you look at every site and make sure the teachers receive adequate supplies every student should have their own supplies and not share especially with cobin 19.

and currently our service coordinators who work with our birth to three families they guide the parents to get them to their school district to get those kids registered when they're two years 10 months start the process to set up an iep meeting i've sat in on many of those transition meetings and decide where services would best be provided so that's really an important part of what our service coordinators are doing with the families that they're working with you yeah and linda r is david our our ability to kind of have some kind of bri i don't call it a bridge service but uh to have some contact with the parent after age three um you know for a few months i think it's helpful um to make sure that they're guided in the in the right place and that transition happens effectively uh you know there are plenty of districts that run their own programs um you know for for blind children and deaf children uh and and that might be you know what that student needs and and we can still make sure that they're getting the services that they need in their home district but that's that's not every child and and you know we're able by having that um you know being able to provide uh some kind of guidance um post three to three and a quarter or three and a half um you know we'd be able to to steer that student into in the right direction to a program that that's going to suit their needs um again it's it's arizona we you know parent choice is really a guiding principle for you know all of the educational systems so you know we you know can't compel a child to go from one place to another but you know we can give parents the information they need to make a decision that's that's right for them and their family so in terms of that you know the the proficiency in in language um and uh maybe perhaps related is proficiency and expanded common core um which is uh you know kind of a related uh you know related curriculum um and at least from my perspective our guidance principle there is to make sure that there's access to instruction appropriate instruction and access to appropriate technology um you know to me those are the the two key aspects in that uh to support that pillar david this is nancy alexander i have summaries for you for sample priorities that i can do for the first two if you'd like me to now or i can wait until the end and summarize all four whatever would work best for you uh maybe wait till the end and summarize that um unless i mean is there any more discussion on the outstanding student development pillar that the others have you know in terms of priorities in terms of what they'd like to to see it um you know listed as those two or three priorities uh we've addressed okay so it says to develop um creative thinking skills do you know do you see those statements where it says develop the creative thinking skills a critical and relative the interpreter is missing the exact wording that you're looking at it's under the guiding principles she pointed and linda pointed out developed critical and creative thinking skills and as you guys have been talking about these i've got all the notes down that we will then put into um wording for you to take a look at to make sure we we were able to capture all of the guiding principles but i did include that and develop critical and creative thinking skills as we look at ways that we're going to have a priority of outstanding a pillar of outstanding student development with a priority in early learning proficiency and language a priority of making sure that we have the academic accountability to close that achievement gap and to keep the rigor that's standard based so those were kind of the three priorities that came up under that area along within the guiding principles that you have been sharing with us and this is lynn we also need to keep in mind consider the social social emotional aspect that um our kids struggle and they they need that social emotional support um because they don't they don't get it in the same way hearing kids do so um i think we need to keep that as a priority as well mrs lynde i agree i i would agree as well lynn okay if uh if we can move on to the the third pillar of superb organizational culture um are there are there any suggestions for priorities under this pillar um from from my perspective um you know one of our priorities uh i mean i i have two i mean one of them is modeling servant leadership i mean i i think that our administration should be you know focused on helping and well should be in you know it is today but should continue to be focused on helping um the you know the staff serve uh our children um and that's that really should be the the the focus of the focal point or the stance of leadership is to to serve um to serve the staff i mean to me that's uh i think that's an effective model um so that leadership can work together uh to accomplish these things and one of the guiding principles there is really removing removing obstacles for you know for staff to accomplish what they what they need to accomplish uh i also wanted to advance the climate of continuous improvement um you know the the idea that you know there's there's probably always room for improvement we should always be doing something to improve the way we're doing things both large and small so we we should be able to to have a priority of building some sort of continuous improvement feedback or into the the processes that we have in the in the agency you know and that can be that takes a variety of forms i mean one way is to look at things where go that go wrong and and perform some sort of uh you know either root cause analysis where we're taking a look at you know what led to that to that problem i don't want to you know implement uh six sigma or anything like that but you know if we can look at if we have an escape so to speak um where where in the process did it go wrong not necessarily to point blame it at one person or another but to see where the process could be improved and i think this is lynn i think it's important to keep professional development going to make sure that all staff get professional development to increase skills in deaf ed vision and to also what's going on in general education where their standards are um some of the strategies they may be using that would be effective with our our um brick and mortar schools to kind of bring them up into the 21st century and and have them competitive with with some of the um the things that are happening and i know we have to go through professional development all the time um and whether it's i'm the only deaf ed teacher and none of it's ever related to me but i always learn something from it that i can apply and i think that's something we need to really keep a focus on that and i don't know if it would be included here and i know we've been working on it for a few years a number of years is to develop leadership within and and look for leadership without so that we can create a leadership team to be able to fall back on if anybody leaves that's a great a great point um you know in a couple of areas i mean you know one professional development is you know we value our teachers and and we value our staff and we should be able to support them in in improving the the way that they do their jobs and and keeping up with the advancements and you know in the field you know in terms of uh you know developing homegrown leaders i think that's important too i mean in other organizations i've been involved with they uh always try to say you have to you have to you have to find your perspective of replacement right yeah you have to mentor a couple of people um you know that you know to be able to uh develop their skills and improve their skills so you know it's time for for you to advance um you know you can look behind you and say well i have i have a couple of people here or three people that um you know have been observing and have been approving and and and that know you know about this about this position and will be able to be successful there this is linda so thinking to what you're saying david and also with what lynn has mentioned if we're choosing teachers who are motivated or driven for deaf education or visually impaired students we have to also consider their backgrounds is this individual deaf is this individual blind what experience do they have not just academically so that way we can bring in more people from our communities to be role models for our students and i often times do see teachers who may be deaf but are plateaued they they don't they're not given opportunities to move up in their careers because let's say a hearing person may have obtained that position and so how do we work collaboratively with teachers that come from that marginalized background and how do we support our unique community and i feel teachers for the deaf at schools for the deaf should we have more deaf teachers that work directly with these students and how many can we do we see in this public school setting how do we support our school districts to identify leaders within our deaf and our blind communities that way they have more of a commitment and attachment to our communities into our students so i think if we're looking at inclusivity we have to start with the people that we hire and the the partnerships that we create within our stakeholders in our communities it's it's completely different to have someone come in with academic expertise but not that actual life experience and i'm sure that could be said for the blind community as well we if we're looking at people from diverse backgrounds how are we looking at inclusivity within their field how can we promote the experts teaching the experts i don't know i might be preaching to the choir but i'm putting out my thoughts out here and these are just my ideas this is mike mike gordon uh linda you are who wants to become the next president right like let's look at if the next superintendent is deaf or blind that's who we were looking for right because that's what's going to lead our school our agency because that's what we do that's who we are and so i'll just stop rambling now yes good point linda what you're saying is so pertinent to the importance of hiring staff that have understand sensory deprivation understand blindness i don't know how many blind staff there are at asdb out of our 600 employees but i know it's an important aspect of uh role modeling and training and again walking that talk and uh i'm sure it's the same in deafness and very important um you know we have a different approach at savvy in that we we we do non-visual training and when our staff we hire new staff they they spend at least the first couple weeks but as much as 400 hours in their first year in under sleep shade and non-visual training and an immersion so uh it's an important aspect of what we do and i think it's an important aspect of of learning rehabilitation in uh in a in a real setting from folks that that know how to teach it so i i think that's very good linda not something that's really really discussed very often either in regard to that specifically thank you uh uh linda this is uh david i mean i think you're you're right um you know i know when we did our last uh superintendent search we had i believe six finalists and and five of them were at either visual impairments uh or over death um or were hard of hearing uh so you know when you look at education and all of them you know were highly qualified they were principals at schools for the deaf or schools for the blind or former superintendents at other districts um you know in schools for the deaf uh so you know again when we look in in education that's uh you know we in deaf education especially you know we happen to to find you know very often that there are deaf individuals in in the field and i know we have you know quite a number at the agency uh but i think maybe what what you're asking is you know how can we develop them so that uh you know when leadership positions uh do arise that they're in a good position to uh you know to be competitive for those positions when they you know when they when they do arise um are there any other any other discussions about the organizational culture i know we have a couple of priorities that i i have proposed linda has proposed a very good one are there any other any other discussions on that no okay here now if we can go on to effective resource management that was our last pillar if we have any discussion on different priorities for that pillar one of the priorities that you know i have is is to optimize human resources um and and as a guiding principle to focus on efficiency and and lean management i think when we look at our um you know if we look at our the business reports that we get every meeting i think we're running at about 12 in terms of overhead um or administrative costs uh and that you know i think there's probably opportunity there to to improve some on that um i'd like to be able to say that we you know we that we can increase the amount of dollars that we that we spend the agency to direct student service and direct uh student programs and you know transportation uh you know to and from those programs uh so i think there might be some opportunity there um and that's you know again um making the management system you know a bit more lean a bit more efficient than it is today i don't know that i necessarily have a number in mind but i i think where we are is maybe a bit much is there any any other suggestions on that in terms of you know our ability to to optimize the human resources uh without hearing any of the other priority that i had in my notes for the to align the human capital and resources so so a guiding principle there would be to encourage effective facility management i know you know our use of the tucson campus has changed over the last few years and you know we i think we you know to be good stewards of that facility um you know we may have to make some changes as to how we use the campus uh either again we've these are things that we've talked about in the past you know either leasing to outside groups or repurposing buildings for different uses um you know i'm you know perfectly happy to to repurpose groups and start a building and start to program there so we can serve more children or serve the children we have with uh with deeper you know deeper services but you know at the same point i i want to make sure that we're you know we're using the campus that we're using all the campus and we're using it effectively i know now we talked again a few years ago about the dorms um and and their use and and the footprint of the dorms has decreased although with covid um it is you know my understanding is that we we have some space um some extra space to provide some distance so that's that's a good thing uh that one that we happen to have that now for covid but at some point in the future you know when the the that that threat uh to the agency is reduced i'd like to be able to um you know kind of go back to the more compact uh management of the especially with the tucson campus and to the extent there's there's management at the pdsd campus and that we can effectively use those resources i'm certainly open to that too i think the campus there is you know it's used differently and it's a it's in a uh you know it's a day school it's not not a residential school so um or it's not at least partially a residential school like the tucson campus oh linda so my thoughts on what you mentioned david and you're right having the two different campuses and i'm a product of a school for the deaf and a residential program and i grew up at a school for the deaf even though my parents are deaf and yes the language exposure was rich there but i think the social emotional development that i acquired at school for the deaf was critical and we have to remember that especially with our population of students and the activities that are promoted at schools for the deaf they're able to participate in clubs after school because they live in dorms and how we collaborate with school districts because of the dorm opportunity and they're activities that are so rich within our communities that we we have to you know historically remember that this is how our students relate and we're talking about the entire state of arizona so what opportunities are we able to give to other students that live in remote areas if they did not have the chance to come to the school for the deaf and or blind and then i think the more we connect our our population with our school districts and really enhance our the quality of life for school for the children at the schools for the deaf and what would it look like if we changed that and we no longer provided a residential program deaf education would change and it would have been an abrupt change and i understand being cost-effective and but yet maintaining growth and i see the downside to both options and if we do lease out to an outside organization could that blame itself an opportunity to keep the dorms because we are leasing other properties and i i go back to the social emotional development of our students and things that they don't find at home unfortunately it's it's yeah thank you linda yeah and and i do i i mean that should be clear i'm not saying that this is a guiding principle of producing or usage of the dorms um as a deliberate measure you know if there are fewer children that are parents that choose to send their kids there that's one thing um i know the uh i'm not sure if you were there for that visit we did a couple of years ago uh when they implemented the sentinel zone um you know area where the where the children go where the residential students go uh after school and that's a i mean that's great i mean that's a the central zone is really an amazing place i think um and they have you know the ability to to engage in different um you know activities there uh and also if you looked at the when we did the dorm tours uh the students were able to live collectively um they do their own laundry they cook their own meals they decide what meals amongst themselves that they're gonna cook um they they go and obtain that food um you know locally and then they come back and they they cook and then they clean up and that's uh you know that's all extra it's all expanded common core you know things especially for deaf or i'm sorry for blind children um those are all expanded common core life skills uh that we just you know we don't outside a residential program you don't have you know it's hard to get time to do that uh right so because you know we have all of these extra hours in the day to be able to learn those life skills uh and that's you know that that's you know to me i think that's that's really important for the the students who choose to come to the residential campus certainly that's not the right choice for every child of course um but what i mean by you know effective facility management is that we you know we're using the campus that we have and the resources that we have on campus effectively that i don't want to have um you know empty buildings uh i want to be able to use them and and whether that's used by a third party that's that's one thing we'd have to carefully select who would you know lease to etc and and and what uses they'd have or if we repurpose them to uh you know to provide other services or enhanced services um you know that that's another option too i know i think one of the buildings we have in the tucson campus was used uh first for some technical education classes um and now i know my understanding is that many of the students there you know go off campus for that uh now um if we can you know repurpose that that building for some other use that's productive um you know i'd wanna i wanna hear about that um and in terms of the you know even expanding the resources we've talked about programs you know having programs again you know the the population of arizona is um you know centered in in maricopa county um there's also a significant population down in pima um and then some near near flagstaff if there's and then there's a lot a lot of rural communities and and it's a challenge to reach those rural communities but we need to we need to do it um if the uh if the answer is that we need to have either lease you know some other space somewhere else um and run you know similar to what we do um you know up north there's a couple of places up north where we we do that um and bring children to those programs if we need to expand something like that um or try something new that's that's another um you know a way to align our you know our human and our capital resources and be able to deliver services in in locations that aren't our main campuses and outside maricopa and pima but we need to be able to again marshal the human resources to go to go do it and marshal the the capital to go do it um are there are there any other i think linda you try to say something yes um it says um attract and retrain retain qualified personnel is that okay right okay yeah yeah so i'm looking at that and i think that's important that we are bringing i want to speak to that that we're bringing qualified um teachers of the deaf and qualified teachers of the blind and visually impaired and that we're retaining them so how are we doing that um and how do we do that um you know often times they come looking for training and they earn their degree and then they leave they do their internships and then they leave um so i think it's important that you know we're we're bringing in those qualified personnel and staff and we're keeping them here and that throughout the cooperatives as well i wanted to add that as well sure and and i certainly uh agree with that i mean part of that is under the you know the organizational culture we want to have a culture that uh you know where staff want to work we want to have a culture that supports staff in their professional development um so they can grow professionally um part of that is you know resource management in terms of making sure that we can take you know competitive um you know compensation for you know the teachers and the other staff and there's you know several hundred teachers and there's hundreds of other staff so we want to make sure that every job classification we're able to offer a competitive package um you know relative to you know local school districts um you know that may be competitors for those you know for those for those folks um and in terms of you know our resource management you know again aligning that or or being more efficient i mean we hopefully can get you know more um you know more money directed towards direct student service i hope um as part of those efforts uh to increase efficiency so that we can uh you know use the money that we have if we don't have any increase in our in our budget um and again i don't know what if prop exactly passed or not or what the implication of that is for the agency i don't know yet um but if we were to say that our budget is fixed um you know how can we how can we get more you know more services from that uh how can we deliver more services with that same amount of money to the children i think that's that's to me is is one of our you know our challenges linda speaking and other different challenges um but we also you know we have our challenges and we also can have our goals and things that we want to see happen um and that's where we use our creativity to solve these challenges to overcome these barriers um that's something that i'd like to see happen that's my my thoughts so is that clear i know this is a strategic plan so we have to think outside the box and i know with coronavirus when that impacted the closure we had to think outside of the box with how we're providing education and we're still moving forward with our planning process you know we're coming up with the principles we're being creative with how we're going to address some of these barriers and we need to continue to do so no i i certainly agree linda and i think that's our you know kind of after today's meeting um you know uh nancy and i and internet will meet and kind of you know call us our notes here um and that'll give some direction to the professional staff to kind of come up with um kind of the rest of the plan in terms of what are some specific and measurable uh goals or items that we're going to look at um to support these uh you know to further the priorities and and to be in keeping with the guidance principles um so that's that's kind of the next next part of that is to um challenge the professional staff to to come up with some of those and and they certainly have um input from the the other strategic plans that that nancy has gathered um and and their own ingenuity to develop that um but i'm certainly looking forward um to their their input and then our next meeting we can go through that um and and have our input on on that or either ask questions or have some give them some notes on that so we can you know we can kind of hammer that out um is there any other um input in terms of the the priorities um and uh um and guidelines that's that's where um you know we've kind of merged items three and four but if there's any other input on these um we'd certainly like to hear it now and then and then i can kind of close up with with with number five okay so so hearing none we'll go to item five the next steps in the strategic planning process um i'll meet with uh with annette and nancy um in the near term we'll kind of hammer out what we've discussed in our meeting today again as i mentioned they'll send that to the professional staff and and they'll kind of give us their you know what they what they think are our measurable um areas that we can that we can really look at and uh and then that we'll come back for our next planning meeting our next week is a regular board meeting so it'll be the traditional setup uh but the the work study session after that um to go back and forth with the staff over that um once we get that kind of hammered down then i think we'll be well on our way we'll have a draft plan um so which will be which would be great because once we have that we can start tying our meetings together with that plan so that we know that all of the steps that we're we're taking all the actions that we're taking are meeting are going to be supporting you know one of these priorities and we're going to be doing it in accordance with one of these guiding principles um and uh and also we can start getting some baseline data you know quite quite frankly so that we can begin to measure progress um and then you know over the next year or two we can determine uh you know where progress is being made and how quickly it's being made and whether we need to devote resources to one area or another to uh to push that forward so um thank you everyone for joining us i think we you know i think we accomplished quite a bit here in terms of building out our strategic plan um and uh you know we got to hear the board and their input um and uh again thank you very much i appreciate it we'll see you in in december thank you david i have a question when is the next board meeting this is linda i'm not sure if latisha's on the line i know it's in dece i think it's early december but i forget the exact date it's yeah it's december 3rd okay december 3rd no okay december 3rd and then our next planning meeting following that is when yeah um yeah i don't believe that we have that scheduled yet we uh you know because of covid we had to cancel a couple of those meetings and and uh and then there was the meeting where we didn't have quorum in october uh so we got you know we're a little delayed of where we wanted to be you know primarily due to covet um but i think in our next meeting um you know we we've already set the meetings for um and and when those will be and where those will be but uh we'll probably need to uh schedule in at our next meeting some tentative work study plans so so bring your calendars next time okay all right um thank you with that um we can we can adjourn uh and again and thank you to the the staff and and and uh media and uh mr moya for for producing this i think um it went really well this is our first in-person slash zoom meeting um and i think uh i think it went well so um again thank you for all of that um you know production and to the interpreters and as always they do great work you thank you thank you everyone bye

all in favor aye thank you thank you item nine a district calendar mr sol please um this is the time of year that we typically approve the calendar it was based on last year's calendar and or what would have been last this current year's calendar sorry before we made changes to it so we start school on august 4th um new teachers come back july to our start july 22nd returning teachers come back on the 28th of july all the normal holidays and everything else our work engagements and contracts are based on 208 working days there's actually 209 working days in this calendar um in the past we took made everyone take a day off without pay and so what we've decided to do is to um for hourly employees just paying for that extra day so our secretaries our custodians we're talking about 12-month employees so we're not talking about um our paraprofessionals and things like that because they're not they're only 10 months so our 12-month employees are our school secretaries custodians the staff in the district office that are hourly they would get an extra day of pay and then the exempt employees which would be administrators and directors would get just a floating day off so instead of working 208 days they would just get a floating day off during the year sometime and then um karen who takes care of leave would have to to keep track of that for just the administrative directors so the administrators and directors would not get any additional pay they would just get that extra date off um the only the big difference is we end school on a tuesday instead of wednesday was actually graduation is still on wednesday so that's kind of nice because the the teachers don't have to go to to work all day and then have to go to graduation that night at the high school and um so we'll have just the normal last day of school on tuesday and graduation on wednesday evening any question of this has been reviewed by the ciac the superintendent's employee advisory committee um they have taken it they have seen this and larry is the the chairman of the chairperson for that committee and and um he can attest to that so it has had some at least review by staff any questions nope this is an accident item would appreciate a motion please i will make a motion to approve the 21 22 district calendar okay all in favor aye thank you item 9b 2019-20 school level report okay so this is something new that the state's requiring now it's normally going to be with our afr but they extended it this year because of the covet stuff so basically what this is is showing our revenue that's generated by the schools versus how much we spend at the schools um and it's it was a lot of complicated numbers and information and so john came up with a summary sheet which you guys have i sent you the whole document electronically but it was just too much to print um so the the main thing to look at is um with our the money generated by the schools first fed versus how much we spend at the school's first fed we are short like seven hundred thousand dollars so um i think the main reason the state wanted to do this was um because it's showing that we we basically are underfunded first bed will this proposition the past affected the bottom line i would say no no no it's going to impact all the staff kind of equally and we still you know we still are i don't want to say we're overstuffed because we're not we're probably understaffed when it comes to special education it's just that we're not we don't we aren't given specific funding for special education like we should be and we have like the alphabet groups like asbo and all of them they have really been wanting the state to change the funding formula for sped for a long time and i think this is basically going to give enough information to support that the formula needs to be updated so that schools are funded correctly for sped as an example a a student that has a speech and language disability or somebody that might have what we call our resource kits so they're the lowest level of special education students they still require a ton of paperwork through a an iep an individualized education plan there's therapists that sometimes work with them there's a teacher that's typically assigned with them they bring in an extra ten dollars per student that's our largest our largest group of special education students is our resource students there's other students that will bring in you know 20 30 000 but we have to have a full-time aide working with them along with the therapists and the teacher doing the ieps and things like that so um the kids deserve the services that they're getting the district isn't just isn't getting reimbursed for those services from the state and the federal government adequately well is it safe to assume that all the schools we're not we're not alone in this this is where we're in good company when it when it comes to that situation i would be surprised if there are any districts who come out ahead and spend i really doubt there's any good [Music] i'm just believing everything you say yeah okay this is an action item so i'll make a motion to approve of the approval of the 1920 school level report all in hi thank you item 10 a uh covered instructional model so this is an item that um that at the last board meeting that we kind of you requested to kind of be on the agenda to revisit every time i do want to say there are no recommended changes right now to the model i don't want people to freak out that we're going to make any changes because that's not what i'm recommending um right now what i am doing is i'd like you to approve the document that i put that we'll share online which is basically in the past you you've um approved similar documents that kind of outline what online instruction is going to look like then it outlined what hybrid instruction looks like and then all in person this is kind of a combination of online and all in person because in my mind all in person means that um we don't have to worry about coping this is a kind of a all in person while still worrying about coping so there's some things for example face coverings that we're still requiring limited after school in person activities no volunteers on campus things like that so at the top it's in-person instruction guidelines beginning october 26 2020.

and 1:00 p.m. each day school buses will be on sites to distribute some those curbside meals uh they are free of charge to anyone under age of 18 I'm just reading up my notes very quickly in regards to that we will get that detail and writing out to the community so people can look at that and see it and in in regards to that as we look at the various things that there might be questions of we will be shooting things out via our social media posting information on our website so that parents can access that and see specifically what might be going on from a detail standpoint as we try to to get from here to a few weeks down the road and hopefully back in session back to normal from an in-person and remote standpoint um I think that is what I have at this point in time and so uh we'll uh turn things back over to Dr neoli to think to talk about uh the situation within the city and county a little bit more Dr dski thanks Dr Roberts uh I think that it's been mentioned several times already uh about how people are probably getting a little tired about the reinforcement of wearing masks and uh proper social distancing but I think now is the time this is important as ever as important as when this pandemic first started that we really need to be following these guidelines uh you know I think we're all suffering from a little bit of pandemic fatigue everyone has heard that statement a lot lately uh but I just really want to encourage everyone that this is a very important time for baramy County so as it's been alluded to many of our local cases have been uh linked to some of these public gather Gatherings whether it's uh weddings or baby showers or just family get togethers um due to this uh we've decided that we've reached the moment in time that we need to take a more cautious approach as a community and we're going to step back to Stage 4.5 again here in barthi County uh these guidelines are going to be put in place for the next four weeks and then we will re-evaluate the numbers and see how um activity of covid-19 is in our County at that time so I know that this is a very difficult decision to make um it wasn't made lightly but it is one that we feel that is in the best interest for the health of our families and our community in general I also want to take this time to encourage everyone to get tested if you have the slightest symptoms that seem suggestive of co9 or have you been in contact with anyone who has symptoms suggestive of the virus we still have free testing available in baramu County at the Fair Oaks location and also at the local Health Department thank you Dr nski mayor [Music] L thank you Dr Roberts uh yeah I'm Jim Lup mayor of the city of Columbus on behalf of the city and I think also speak for the county county of berol you you know we want to add our support to the decision to return turn to Stage 4.5 as uh you know Dr dumalski mentioned it's a difficult decision or it has been but it's one that we feel is necessary for the public health and uh and while I'm sure all of us will sort of see that is a little bit of a step backwards and I'm not one to uh to uh you know want to take steps backwards but it's one that's necessary at this point in time you know we we cannot ignore the math we cannot ignore the uh the information that we receive we believe it to be accurate and we believe that it points to a continued spread of this disease that we need to uh we need to try to mitigate as easily as quickly as we can as I said we know this is going to be a a difficult uh decision to implement um it will seem to uh fall upon others uh more more difficultly if that's a word it'll be a little more difficult for some to comply with than others that's what I guess I'm trying to get out and we know particularly those organizations those businesses that rely upon the public attendance will be uh adversely affected and so you know if we think about some of our restaurants or some of our other retailers we want you to keep in mind that there are still contactless opportunities available uh for you to uh you know arrange for carry outs or deliveries or what have you and we hope that you're able to uh to access those uh those those uh uh methods you know we request we've been asked already you how we will enforce this uh move to Stage 4.5 and we'll do pretty much the same way we did it before we're going to request compliance we will ask people to uh to be aware of the rules and to comply uh and because they know what they need to do um and I will tell you that our previous experience with uh section 4.5 was was pretty favorable I mean we got uh what I would consider to be substantial compliance throughout the community and I expect that we will achieve that again uh but I want people to understand just as important as it is to understand the rules and you know I brought with me a you know a copy from what was issued previously by the governor just as important as it is to follow the uh the specific guidelines in the in the in the printed materials it is just as important to follow the intent it is important for us to understand as we've mentioned before that there are events that we can't necessarily anticipate that we can't write down here that we know you're going to have a baby shower or we know you're going to have a a wedding or what have you and it's going to be 62 people there is that okay the point is is that we want to limit Gatherings we want to limit the opportunity for the spread of this pathogen it's airborn so uh you need to uh uh restrict the amount of air that you share uh with other people and so if you have to ask if you have to inquire well the answer is probably no you know you probably should not do the activity or participate in the activity that you're contemplating we're welcome to field calls at City Hall if people have questions but uh but that I think would be as good a guideline as any and we're particularly concerned as we head into the holidays because we know as humans we're social people right we're social animals we want to get together we want to see our friends we want to see our family but this is just a time uh where we need to be cautious about that excuse me I hope that's just an allergy but uh uh but you know I think that's been my experience so far particularly this time of year so I just want all of us to remember that while we'll have some pretty guidelines with respect to Stage 4.5 uh we want everybody to follow the intent remember it's important excuse me it is important to mask up hand wash practice physical distancing avoid crowds just be smart about those as we go through the holidays and remember too that these guidelines are necessary for our health our public health and by working together we can keep each of us individually and as a group healthy thank you mayor Len I think that concludes the the number of speakers that we have for today um so at this point in time um Kelsey has believeable open up to Q&A and okay uh we might and I know we have again a few of you online I see John Clark now added there John good to see you um let's start in the room here and maybe uh just see first if we have any questions within the room and then I can go back to the screen and and and monitor those that are that are on the screen at one time so any questions from from those present here in the room Jenna you know if this will affect private school transportation school that so it it it will uh in in the sense that um our our bus routes will not not be running uh any bus service that we'll be providing over the next few weeks we do have some classes uh that that are it's necessary to keep going uh for example um C4 Career and Technical classes that require a certain amount of in-person instruction and so those classes uh will continue there'll be some limited bus service for students who are participating in those classes as well as other students we might have in our building building special needs students elll students others that we will work to to have in our buildings based upon need and and to ensure we're providing services so there there will be some limited bus service but that would not uh accommodate the the number or or the the need that the private schools might have Dr bosan you're in room does that answer that question appropriately thank you any other questions from from inside the room okay well we have a few people online again I mentioned John Clark Barney quick Harrison silox and Julie McClure so uh if one of you want to unmute yourselves I see John's hand go up cuz I see him on camera John I'll start with you uh if you can hear me okay we can hear you great thank you John uh so my question would be could someone go over in a nutshell it seems like it's been forever ago since 4.5 tell us what this means what we're allowed to do what we're not allowed to do that's a great question John so I will ask uh who would be the best one to do that Dr debolski and just step up back up to the podium Dr nski so you have the microphone in front of you so in regards to Stage 4.5 uh the main changes are um a lot of indoor activities so uh dining room food food service will still be open but will be reduced to 75% capacity uh bars bar seating and in-person uh capacity will be limited to 50% um other things that will likely affect baramu County will be um movie theaters and bowling alleys will be moved to 50% capacity or any other indoor um entertainment activities and then social Gathering size will be limited back down currently it's at 500 it will change to 250 um before we would allow um organizations to submit uh plans if they're planning on having more than that uh maximum stated number but for the time being we're putting a hard cap at 250 okay thank you Dr nski John any follow-up question to that while Dr nski still at the podium I while Dr molski is standing there uh can we talk a little bit about the the number of deaths and where we're seeing those deaths I had heard they were almost all nursing home deaths but I wanted to get some clarification on that yeah so we're still seeing um a large majority of deaths are occurring at age 60 and over and and they still a large number of those are are nursing home deaths that is correct um we're luckily here in bamia County we're we're seeing a very low number of deaths here over the last several weeks but that Statewide trend is increasing so it it only stands to reason that we may be seeing that here locally we still have a nursing home here in bamia County that's dedicated to care of covid uh 19 positive patients so anytime those patients become ill enough uh to require hospital care they're going to be coming to Columbus Regional all right I'm getting the thumbs up from from John thanks John uh any any other questions May I'll just go down the order here to make it easy for each of you Barney do you have any questions for us okay if if if you are um saying something boring you would need to unmute um if if not I going to move on to Harrison any questions from you Harrison okay Bonnie I'm seeing you pop back on the camera any questions that you had Bonnie okay go ahead un mute yourself Bonnie here we go okay there we go yes all right um your statistics about red um I need I'd like you to go back over those if you could please yes um the three the three categories in which we are classified as red yeah and um yeah you could Pro yeah sure will so for for everybody's sake again always a little bit lagging data and so what today's numbers might look like it could change everything that I say the the the information posted yesterday by 5:00 on our community covid-19 task force site would actually represent numbers from Wednesday so the numbers I'm getting are from Wednesday would be November the 4th and the per capit rate was at 33.4 and that has went up dramatically over the last week 15 is when we look at and say it's red 15 and we're at 33.4 okay um in terms of the uh hospitalizations we look at hospitalizations at 15 is red and we have been yellow for for quite a number of days but just tickled the red number by getting up over 15 and I I I think we're maybe still at 15 but again that number changes it could change by two today and be back down into yellow but it is it is red or at least was in the publication yesterday and then the third number I gave shows up as yellow on the sheet um but it was 13.2 and 15 is what we're saying is red and that is always a lagging indicator because as we try to track that data internally yeah we are 4 days behind typically with having the most accurate data so that that date there is even earlier than November the 4th uh was at 13.2 and trending toward 15 which would put us in the red so what I'm indicating what likely with three Reds is because again that is old data and today the percent positive rate to have a 33.4 per capita rate is likely to be in the red okay thank you you're welcome we're going to bounce back to you Harris and any anything to to ask of us Julie you're also on the call anything Julie from you can you hear me I can we can okay thank you um I have a question question from Andy East when does 4.5 officially start is it right now or is it on Monday and my second question is I'm seeing a lot of people in the Columbus Community not wearing masks throughout the community whether outside or inside since Stage 5 began um is there going to be any kind of mask enforcement uh to perhaps encourage these people to wear masks Dr nski mayor who wishes to respond to that combined question there all right Dr nbal is stepping to the podium Julie thank you you're welcome so um my intent was to start the uh 4.5 as soon as we can whether that is um if we can get that out later today or or start it tomorrow um the what was the other question it wasn't my other question was The Masks masks and whether there'll be enforcement Beyond just the um encouragement and and um asking people to comply there seems to be in stage five kind of a general Blas attitude about Mass throughout the Columbus Community right as of right now we're still not going to be um finding individuals for maske wearing um we've definitely been having those discussions but um we're choosing to still implore individuals to to do the right thing and wear their mask when they're out in in an appropriate area where they feel that they cannot um they cannot have proper social distancing thanks and one one last question for Dr nski um do you have concerns about employers and employees the number of people who have returned to work and what is happening in our manufacturing facilities um and even in our retail businesses is there any concern from the health department about Community spread there well I can only hope that I mean a lot of the larger companies they have their own uh kind of guidelines in place and and I would hope that they are at least following CDC guidelines or or I know that there are several that are a little bit more strict than that so I haven't heard any complaints at my level of of people being lack in in that effort but uh you know if there's any of those types of questions that should arise I mean I would I'd love to have those be directed to the health department and is there any effort by the health department to kind of monitor air quality in any of these facilities um since it is an airborne disease if is that a concern or is there any way that can be checked about air quality and and air circulation in these buildings yeah as of right now I'm not aware of any efforts like that going on locally um oh I had one last question for Dr Roberts on extracurriculars and things like that um I understand the East open uh open house for its Auditorium has been postponed from Monday does that also mean um what they they're having a show this weekend are things like that going to be allowed to go on as with Athletics but they are Julie so so we we we I probably should have catched that more generically in terms of co- and extracurriculars so not just Athletics if that's how I stated it so any Co or extracurricular event uh that involves our kids we are going to allow them to participate in that with limitations again on who else can be in there um so there will be additional limits put on um capacity and and and whatnot in terms of those attending that but the show shall go on okay thank you you're welcome I would add jul just based on the question of Dr galski on on the piece with um uh positive test cases and close contacts as I went through the mitigation strategies earlier both from the school standpoint and asking the community to practice those as well as they can is is also adhering into those guidelines at a bare minimum is that the the CDC and isdh Indiana State Department of Health have laid out pretty clearly the expectations of a positive test case and and being home isolated and also for quarantining if you're in close contact and and there continues to be questions about can I come back can I come back can I come back and I'm sure that then that that occurs but um unfortunately people might feel just fine um and and and and want to come back or go out in the community and participate in things but it it runs the risk of continuing to spread virus so I would ask that to the degree possible that people continue to abide by that isolation if a positive test case and quarantine if a close contact to the to the degree expressed by the CDC and ISD and I have one last thing and I I don't know if it's possible for you to answer this or not but how can the community help bcsc right now as far as students who might need food or students who might need transportation or uh PODS of places where they can get internet is there any way the community can help bcsc right now great question Julie thanks for asking that and and I I think at least at this moment we are good some of that might get need to get we'll get sorted out and we'll make additional requests but from the food standpoint just based on how things are set up we should have the food necessary to provide meals for our kids each day um we may need help you with with additional sites or or making it more convenient or something like that as we as we start the process we'll see uh from a transportation standpoint uh the the the the students will be looking to bring in for the specific reasons current technical education as an example uh we are working on that routing I think that we'll be able to to address that at this point in time special need students others that might need to be in our buildings I think the technology access might be the one that we always wrestle with so the more places that are available for our kids to to go to that will raise their hand and say hey we're okay with students popping in and using our internet uh the better this is a little different circumstance than in the spring in the spring when we shut down everybody shut down so some of the places we would maybe rely on in the past weren't open either and so kids couldn't go to those that's a little bit different now and some of those open places um they can get to so we would just ask for that assistance but for any additional specific um request from us we will get that out as soon as we can thank you okay you're welcome John your hand is up go ahead so um I I may have missed this earlier I know Dr n balski talked about some of the for lack of a better word super spreader events had been some functions like weddings or get togethers what have you are any of those uh traced back to the schools is there any indication that kids going to school are bringing covid-19 home from a school setting or from School event like I know there was a um a sectional game uh earlier in the year that apparently caused a lot of cases not not here not thanks for that question John I'm aware of that one and I think that was an Indianapolis base sectional and there there's even some concern about maybe a sectional even closer to us having some some cases related to that where large people were in a gymnasium a lot of people were gathered um we are not aware and and I'm I'm looking to Dr nski and Dr soderman to to cor me if there's something they're aware of that that we haven't talked about necessarily and Kelly Thompson our director of health services in the room too but but we have we are not aware of that situation where we have um a person who has a positive test case and and then spreading that so at least in the school setting of a person with a positive test case we identify close contacts and then those close contacts also testing positive after and I'm not about to say that that's that hasn't happened um or that there's some asymptom situation or the person who is positive didn't get it from somebody else uh that was that was maybe asymptomatic but we we have definitely not seen any super spreader situation where a person has been at something and then that's resulted in multiple spread I I commend uh our our going back to the extracurricular pieces you know we've been able to maintain that well uh comparatively there are many teams that because of positive test cases close contacts or otherwise throughout the state who've had to Forfeit G games I miss the football sectional tournament whatever those things are and our coaches have done an outstanding job with that of managing that to allow us to continue to participate uh and then really not miss anything throughout the fall any other questions as I'm looking at the screen here Jen I might just jump back to you in case there's anything as you've listened then if there was something else that you might might have okay thanks Jen and always feel free to reach a back out to us of course okay anybody else with questions before we then wrap up today's press conference was always taught to give at least eight seconds of wait time and I think we're we're there uh so we will close today's press conference thank you mayor lenov Dr sonan Dr nski uh Kelsey for helping arrange this uh from CR others that have been involved again I want to thank the community for the reference th far for us to to get to where we are today we're very proud of the fact that we've had 60 days of inperson instruction so it it hurts me I know it hurts the community for us not to be in school over the next three weeks but I hope that are the changes that we're making that we can uh help get things steered back in the right direction and bring the cases back down to a manageable level CU we know it's not going away but how can we manage this so we can be as normal as we possibly can be we appreciate everybody's assistance in that thank you for tuning in today

with the covid-19 community task force and we will be live streaming that on our YouTube channel for those who would uh can't uh be there because of work uh but just want to make sure that you're informed about uh all that's going on in our school corporation all right back to the action here the Huskies have made a little bit of run here cut into this lead hey had a good jump ball there the Huskies will get this [Applause] one this one's a a special one we have the pride of the signature acmy [Applause] for our game of the week Lincoln certainly making this uh a close one coming back in the third [Applause] quarter balls in that shots up and good or number 10 Jackson gets that nothing there cool as a cucumber number 15 Keaton Roberts gets the ball down the floor [Applause] Max Wilson with the steal good jump stop good jump shot somehow he ends up with it again oh my goodness in and out how is that not going in you know and this is this is part of that strategy um of making sure that everybody gets their playing time as number 15 what a great robberts gets that one in there so we may just be looking at a great combination here for both [Applause] schools oh We're Off to the Races number 10 up and oh it's good Jackson Miller with a big time outside shot [Music] and the Huskies are going with the philosophy we're going to let our defense be our best [Music] offense Roberts on the [Music] drive back out shot no good and Wilson's got the ball down the floor one player to beat up oh hey just like that he's got it back and we good very nice shot Max Wilson great hustle there by Wilson second and third effort just over a minute to go 20- 17 Falcons up three ball wow oh my goodness King Roberts obviously we're going to only have to put two but that was a great shot there by Roberts and he gets the steal right here shots up oh under a minute [Applause] as you alluded to in the ebl even though we do have a three-point line out there we do not uh we do not count uh the three-point shot but that would certainly go on the bcsc top 10 from the I have to say so CL continues to run about 30 seconds left in the third quarter [Music] first shot up no [Applause] good with a 2317 lead 7 Seconds To Go 3 two oh that's up oh just a little strong strong [Music] [Applause] all right here's the fodrey of Falcon cheerleaders glad we get to see them [Applause] [Music] [Applause] hey great job ladies niia Herrera rayy Warfield Shelby sharp Cassidy Sims Emma Cummings Abby Coleman you know what you're doing there J trying to something a little bit different with the cheerleaders this year you know most teams will have a squad of 12 and I know that these uh both teams have a squad of 12 but we split the squads in half so we'll have six from each team for the first game and then we'll get a fresh batch of cheer leaders the other six for the girls [Applause] game play the whole game defense all right heading into the fourth quarter here with f holding on to a six-point [Applause] lead camon Robson with a big rebound shot from outside no good and there he is again oh with a near save and Off to the Races [Applause] nothing for number 15 ends up with the ball oh and rattling around and good Keaton [Applause] [Music] Roberts number 42 with that ball rattling around there Cameron Robertson I think number 21 Max um Wilson for the Huskies on the bench getting the break not sure if he was injured or not you know Nate I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that Keaton Roberts dad is assistant coach Shane Roberts on the bench for the fodrea uh Falcons and back in the day he played for the original fodrea point guard much like Roberts and uh it's pretty cool to see his son out there on the court they played very similarly they they scored a lot and uh had great hustle so just want to give a shout out to Shane it's uh it's good to see him on the bench helping out with Coach derell Lindsay I tell you what that hus number 23 so fast I could hardly see Hudson lay this signature Showdown is up to the hype here tonight [Applause] hey all right really important getting that ball in looks like we got it press broken number 24 outside no good what a shot there's Cameron again offensive rebound oh out the fo and up no good gets his rebound up again rolling around no good there you go oh hanging on to the ball a jump ball [Music] [Applause] all right at the S minute Mark we got some substitutions [Applause] here Huskies down four fod has the ball way downtown nothing there oh [Applause] now just calm [Applause] down that'ss up no good hey we going to call that foul on the [Applause] floor and we'll see what fer can do with it out of [Music] bounds you're going to need to know where Keaton's at slipping in from behind number 45 aser Scott called for the travel now for Lincoln calm down see the floor shots up there's Wilson again securing that rebound number 23 lets that one fly rattling around no good Xander gets that one out to Roberts [Applause] shots up no good offensive rebound that was a great great defensive effort by the Huskies just need to finish with that defensive rebound so that fighter wasn't shooting free throws that one's a really important one second one's up no good and we'll stay here ball stays here with the Falcons 4 minutes and almost 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter shots in oh calm down calm calm down calm down good pivot there you go ball's in the open court now Wilson takes it nothing oh my goodness Robinson wrestled that ball away didn't he I tell you he is a force to be reckon with down there oh and coming up hoblin for the Falcons number 45 Asher Scott get checked out over there on his [Applause] bench two really big free throws here shots up and good Cameron cuts that lead to four and here's a second one right around no good oh an offensive rebound oh looks like he's going to the line I think they did they call that one on the floor are we in the bonus nope they're called on the floor take the ball out of [Applause] bounds for K thinky ended up with that and he's going to go ahead and inbound the ball [Applause] there good shot fake shots up there's Wilson underneath his pass off [Applause] and a travel oh good thought there figh ends up with it and now we're going to show some patience Kon brings it down we got a pass there to the perimeter oh there's again Cameron Pass ahead good pass nothing [Applause] there up again nope you got to be and PR your coach says let's blow it up boys and get something good here walking down the floor Cameron's not going to have any of that he's got to steal here's here's the big thing the foda players have got to meet the pass they are wide open that shots up nothing there Cameron gets it nothing there and two five players for and will call that foul on the [Applause] floor all right and we'll get ready to update you on how the clock will work for the last minute here in a game like this trapped in the corner gets it out swing it across to Cameron shots up off the back of the iron offensive rebound jump ball Huskies will hang on to this this [Applause] one Huskies will get a timeout here 1 minute 19 seconds left Nate so as we go into this one right here with the rules um in the fourth quarter in the last minute of the game uh we'll go with the normal clock operation if the score is 10 points or less which obviously is the case here so hopefully the officials scorekeeper all getting on the same page down there but the clock will get stopped [Applause] [Music] man what a great crowd [Applause] here and this game turned into everything that we hoped for it to [Applause] be huskies are trying to fight their way back and get this win wison into Robertson oh what a it's a two-o game Cameron gets that shot in with a great inbound pass from Wilson here oh the shot won't count but it looks pretty so will take that one out from the [Applause] side oh he's out of bounds 59 seconds left all right so now we will go ahead and get the clock stopped another number 10 up no good offensive rebound good pivot and we got a timeout got a 30 second timeout by the CSA Lincoln Huskies see what they can get going it know was a great time they called early on and got a great bucket to bring within two we'll see what kind of Wizardry Play We have set up here so to reset the score here or recap but is at two 45 seconds left husky had the ball out of bounds there's the ball shots up and Xander Taylor gets that rebound that is a big one draws the foul and now we're looking for that full court pressure I know exactly what number four uh K think he's trying to do go aggressively for the ball just got to make sure you go for the ball so we're not a an intentional foul there so that no one gets hurt trap on Roberts now Roberts draws all kinds of attention oh my goodness number 10 shots up nothing there 17 seconds Roberts takes it up the court and he's fouled you got 12.2 seconds are we in the bonus yet yeah so number 15 Kate Roberts looks like it'll be one in the bonus here one and one correct Nate yes well if the Falcons could have anyone at their l it definitely be Roberts cool as a cucumber he gets up there and drills that that was an important free throw for the Falcons still some time left 11.7 seconds that one's no good Wilson gets the rebound Ball's tucked down the floor blocked and out of downs with 1.3 seconds seconds that'll pretty much WRA it up yep 1.3 seconds Fida hanging out to a three-point lead fastic the fans show the appreciation [Applause] here and the mutual respect from from both sides understanding that this game came down to the wire well all I can say is wow I am worn out game I know I am worn out and I did not even step foot on the floor I felt like a pinball you know just going back and forth well and you know they both both teams I you know they started off almost too quick for their for their own good yeah and then uh getting your game Feed under you it's compc just relaxing and letting the game come to you turned into one that will be remembered for a [Music] while you hate to see this for um for a team like Lincoln that clawed their way back in and had a few opportunities to either tie the game or take the lead but certainly nothing to be uh disappointed or upset or ashamed about an incredible effort and then if what I'm seeing here is correct for fodrea number 15 King Roberts he's out there taking care of the ball floor General out there and that's right he's just a fifth grader he's a fifth grader that's what I was impressed with you know obviously uh it's it's always an advantage uh at the elementary level to be left-handed but he looked like he was good going both ways and uh you know he he got his teammates involved made some key buckets throughout the game and uh foder is definitely happy to have him for one more year after this and you had mentioned that relationship with um you know dad being a um an assistant coach and that's something special and it's also something hard that to navigate sometimes you know that player coach son father relationship and um I'm sure that the both of them work really hard to make sure that um Dad is Dad at home and Coach Roberts while we're here in a gym yeah that was something that I noticed on both teams you know just great coaching throughout and you know just a shout out to the coaches on both sides you know obviously they knew this was the the big game you know the one on YouTube as well as the CSA signature Showdown uh and it was uh man it was it was just a great game I thought that both coaches were just giving it their all as well as the players well and I'm going to be 100% honest here both of these teams have improved their overall program from year to year um the Fri boys team has continued to improve from year to year yeah and I think um a big part of that is just creating a a culture of um success that they're saying hey we may one of the small schools but we belong here just as much as anybody else and the same holds true for Lincoln U they certainly have a um a culture and an attitude of don't forget about us we can work just as hard um as the bigger schools and they too have created a um a culture of success yeah you know that's something that doesn't happen overnight either and it takes place at you know at at all levels of a school so the the teachers who support their kids uh in the classroom the parents [Music] administrators both both schools represented uh themselves great tonight yeah one of the cool things and I'm I'm not sure while I was uh doing some work behind the scenes here for uh B bcsc uh I don't know if we mentioned this or not but you know a distinct difference between CSA Lincoln and CSA fodrea and and our other elementary schools is uh their emphasis on Project based learning and so with that CSA signature Academy um you know both schools I know fodrey has really taken an emphasis on the global uh aspect of that and you know both schools like you said continuing to improve and grow their programs and I know that they do a great job just like our other elementary schools of focusing on you know the classroom and something that's really unique you know for those of you who are watching and I'm sure that many of you know this but it's it's pretty neat to see the way that these signature have started and and just the impact they're making on our community through their Project based learning yeah if I'm not mistaken I think that um you know the the the signature Academy idea was something that was brought back here to Columbus um for the middle school and the high school and then um at the last minute it was like hey why don't we why don't we try this at an elementary school and so yeah and there's the gave it a try yep CSA Lincoln CSA foder as well as the these kiddos can continue on the CSA Central pathway and and then on to CSA new tech and so it's a complete K through2 pathway and uh it's a great great option for our families and I know that Dr Roberts you know we talk he talks about this a lot that we try to be the District of choice that gives our families options you know whether it's Legato with our dual immersion program you know obviously Southside and Parkside have the AC program uh the CSA schools have Project based learning and so there's something for everybody in bcsc certainly but I'm going to go check and see get some names here real quick sounds great so all right we'll get ready for this next show down boy if it's if it's half as exciting as it was with the boys game we're going to be in for another another great one one more e e e all right ready to get started in our game number two between CSA Lincoln and CSA fodrea my name is Josh Bernett I'm the bcsc communications coordinator and I'm joined by Southside teacher and Coach Nate Bean he was just talking with our coach Coes getting some information about our players and just so appreciate uh all that he's doing to help uh celebrate as well as uh be able to celebrate these kids their families and also try to make everybody a YouTube Star this is a really cool thing that we're able to do to stream these games and uh crazy times with covid-19 but we're we're glad to be able to do this together why don't you go ahead and take it away Nate and I'll get on the camera all right getting ready to tip [Applause] here we'll get some announcements done here for CSA fodrea uh we have number two Maria Galer number three McKenzie Mattis 11 corus Smith 12 Lily Hayworth 13 Shelby sharp 21 Jaye Smiley 24 Grace Smith 53 Trinity Green 31 Penelope Hornady day number 35 Bailey fish not with the team tonight uh we hope that Ariana Ferguson number five and Shay art number 33 able to enjoy this and Andre for their team at [Applause] home for the huskys number 15 Sophia pure brings the ball up the floor she is a fourth grader and that rebound is score number 43 that was Jackie Bur [Applause] and a big hustle for the ball number 54 gets her hands on [Music] that [Applause] okay all right number 31 for the Falcons Penelope Hornady she gets that one up Sophia brings the ball up the floor here get a good screen there underneath that shot is partially blocked [Applause] and the Huskies will go ahead and get this one in right down the middle oh we just need to deliver that pass just a bit [Applause] higher you know I saw the uh CSA Lincoln Schmid game earlier this season before our last stream and Sophia pure might be small but she is mighty yes yes indeed you know she's working hard [Applause] um you know attacking with her left hand you know sometimes being that small is a is a bit of an advantage cuz you can dribble the ball so low to the floor hard to get your hand on it there she is that's a good left hand she's going to put that one up no good [Music] and a foul there by number 54 for the Huskies we have number 11 um Addison Perkins number 12 Joselyn Vogal and like we said number 15 Sophia pure number 20 Melissa rendez number 25 Corey Vincent number 30 Gigi gan [Applause] 43 Jackie Burrows as Gigi gets the ball at the floor there's Sophia shot up no good number 45 brayy erest number um see I think got that number wrong but we'll have brayy olulu een Franco number 54 Jasmine Hendrick 55 Taylor [Applause] Sanders that shots up no good and look at that [Applause] Sophia right in the middle of that getting her hand on the [Applause] [Music] [Applause] ball all right Ball's brought down trying to get some ice defense get her to the left we got a good screen up there at the [Music] [Applause] top that pass thrown away [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] all right Sophia there gets a good screen from the side shots up no good to again that one is blocked by number 35 tripped up [Applause] and number 12 Joselyn Bogle another fourth grader on this squad gets the ball in Sophia shots up off the front of the rim no good F gets the rebound down the floor number 12 jump stop shot up no good 55 Taylor gets it for the Huskies Sophia has it there's a runner short [Applause] there and with 3 minutes 30 seconds left we have a two to2 score little reminiscent of how things got started with the boys game go go go [Music] [Applause] all right so here we are 3 minutes 32 seconds left score tied at [Music] two we'll get the cheerleaders announced here in just a bit soon as I can get those names make sure they're here [Music] all right now let's see what F can do uh uh-oh uhoh shot at the wrong [Music] goal it's okay all right so I think both teams are confused which way they need to go just wanted to give you a fun fact Nate I was researching a little bit and as you were talking about uh Joselyn vogle I believe she's number 12 yes for CSA Lincoln great shot by CSA there so Joselyn and her sister Emily are actually authors they wrote a bookl about uh a new plane or an old plane that used to be at the adaberry ballar air museum and uh Emily vogle is a cheer leader josn is a basketball player and already in elementary school they're authors which I think is pretty cool and uh their grandpa is actually uh very involved with the um building of the new aircraft that has come to Columbus that will be on display at the uh the airport so we've got some pretty smart kids that are student athletes and just want to highlight them whenever we can so shout out to the Vogal girls well and and how fun that you know one can cheer one can play basketball and Coach Eddie Vogal yep there at East getting ready for a football game I think yeah Friday night at Center [Applause] Grove all right that pass comes across court number 53 that shots up no good number 24 gets it right there in her [Applause] hands and right in the middle of that [Applause] number 11 Addison [Applause] Perkins that inbound up no good gets her own rebound and Pi it up and rles it around the score might be a little bit lower but it is a close game just like the first matchup between the uh CSA link and and CSA fdre and I have a feeling this one is going to be another great game Nate yeah once they get settled in great bounce pass underneath [Applause] there covered up well by f r let's see if they can convert shots up oh couple free throws coming up [Applause] well I have to say I'm I I'm aged again a little bit head coach for the Huskies Ashley slate once Ashley hilderbrand was on the first team that I coached here in Columbus at Northside Middle School oh that's really cool uh her did Big JY there at the end of the bench always involved with uh Sports here in town as we get to the end of the first quarter tied up 44 and we'll take a look at the CSA Lincoln husky cheerleaders [Applause] [Music] [Applause] all right those CSA Lincoln husky cheerleaders Lydia barentine Carly Harter kin Hudson Hannah asley Natalie pickup and Farah [Applause] Redmond good struggle for the ball there [Applause] [Music] oh almost picked up the steal [Applause] there now I'll age myself even more and say assistant coach Bailey Lofton one of my former players here at Southside Elementary School [Applause] [Music] so it's a it's a fun thing for coaches kind of the fraternity of coaches to see players uh get into coaching and both of those so you're saying you have a little bit of a coaching tree Nate well that's really cool but both of those uh coaches both Ashley and uh Bailey great with these girls very positive [Music] [Applause] [Music] um is that they just they get confused about positioning uh getting the ball in you know part of that is just [Applause] experience that shots up no good she's going to get that rebound back Gigi gets it out Sophia shots up oh blocked by big number 53 she's coming down the floor off the backboard no good there's Gigi up to Sophia back out and [Applause] all right ball coming down the floor number 53 handles it quite well shots up off the backboard no good apologies on the scoreboard folks I'm trying to do too many things at once and had to update it all at once it is 6 to6 7 minutes left in the second period all right the ever important substitution making sure for Lincoln that you know who you have cuz we got some new foda Falcon players in Jocelyn gets the ball back to Gigi bringing the ball down the [Music] floor good screen there knocked away and out of bounds [Applause] all right Lin get this un inbounded good drive [Applause] there and fod with the ball down the floor kick that one up number three puts that one up what a great one number three McKenzie matth she's going to get that one great heads up play by fod right there coach Ashley slate wants to get this one talked [Applause] over hey and Nate just to Circle back around to uh Emily and Joselyn Bogle I found out the name of that booklet is Berry Army Airfield in baller Air Force Base a book for kids and everyone and so if you do go to the Adry baller Museum you can pick up their booklet for free and uh that's a pretty cool thing you know for for kids to be able to have something for themselves you know whether it's a book whether it's evl basketball like this and uh just wanted to go ahead and give that shout out for anyone who goes to adury baller and uh appreciate those girls creating that resource well I tell you I'll go ahead and go get that booklet and get their autograph and say I knew them when they were in elementary school and right on Q that's right that's perfect Google with the two got a foul there couldn't have drawn that up any better no and you know joselyn's such a neat kid oh strikes back as Bailey gets that one in for thria [Applause] um that one in the [Music] [Applause] [Music] corner series of events there and Trinity Green will end up with that one down the floor got two husky honor she'll turn around nothing there 35 gets that offensive rebound ripped right out of the hands Trinity Green clearly a little bit of a height Advantage for the Falcons and they took advantage there on the putb [Applause] [Music] Gigi gets that one up no good Subs in so with 423 left in the second period Falcons are up 128 number 14 gets that one jump stop jump shot for Shelby shark but sure dribbles down [Applause] low the gold to get in there nope ripped right out of the hands [Applause] there rifles that pass down to number 12 Lily [Applause] Hayworth and there's Sophia on the Move gets the ball down the floors centers it up gets a pretty good little screen there and is met by three Falcons collapsing on defense There She is again oh round There She Goes she's trying to find an [Applause] opening there's johnon oh in out and a big offensive rebound R is not able to get that one to go [Applause] as Bailey fish comes on down across the number 12 oh that shots up no good number 13 that shots up no good and there's good quickly F's excuse me quickly fod has taken a 16 to8 lead Sophia working there trying to get a good screen just a little bit of room to work that shots up and with 2 minutes 13 seconds we'll get a few substitutions in [Applause] [Music] here shots up no good [Applause] you know number 35 for fodrea Bailey fish does just a little bit of everything handles the ball pretty good [Applause] rebounder [Music] oh two competitors getting at it really hard number 13 Shelby Sharp for f she shouldn't feel bad that's just aggressiveness believe me Sophia is not going to break very easily trying to get some space there to work 1 minute left in this second quarter tough defense from the Falcons here yeah the Falcons have really extended out once again though draws a foul sh draws the [Applause] foul need a little bit of the Payton Manning hurry up offense here 30 seconds [Applause] left oh 20 seconds left the ball is back to fodrea last possession Green's going to bring it down that's a jump stop right there maybe [Applause] not five four 3 2 oh and that's the first half [Music] so Nate what did we see in this uh game two of the CSA signature showdown in the first half each team needs to improve on ball handling to be quite honest um you know you cannot have just one ball handler out there um cuz it's really easy to defend them and trap them so like we talked about last week um always working on ball handling and handling the pressure and and handling the pressure I remember you talking about that so you know if both teams can get um comfortable handling the ball that comes then to the next part which is um hitting those easy shots underneath F has done it uh Lincoln struggled to to to do that and so seemed like a little bit too um fodrea you know what their height Advantage we're able to get those putback lay um layups off the rebounds and you know another thing that you said was really important whether it's uh you know ebl or our high school athletes rebounding you said rebounding rebounding rebounding exactly and you know I'm certainly not going to fault uh CSA having um let's see looks like three fourth graders on their team but you know uh fod has this has fourth graders also and so um positioning yourself so that you can um get a rebound and either give your team another chance to score or um you know be able to start the fast break the other way so I'm not I'm not 100% convinced I got the numbers right this so I'm going to try to get third grader Bella slate Who's down there her mom's a coaching I'm going to see if I can't get her up here and yeah that'd be great you know what third grader sometimes knows better than I do so having a having a classroom full of him I certainly know that so see if I can't get her attention and get her to help me out here perfect we're going to take a quick one minute break and we'll be back with you in just a second [Applause] I know Jos I know Sophia Melissa 20 [Music] Jack she's 32 [Applause] right 43 on there right but I have two 43 right Jackie 43 Jackie brayy is 32 32 that's [Applause] all right I think we got the MERS squared away here F picks up where they left off so number 30 GG humanman will bring the ball down the floor jump stop up no good and number 32 brayy Ernest secures that rebound good bounce pass down [Applause] low GG in the corner no good right back to her great B smass in stolen away by [Applause] [Music] [Applause] padria all right so number 30 for CSA Lincoln Gigi gets the ball down the floor there is Sophia shot up no good rebounding underneath through her hands number [Applause] [Music] 54 oh good tie up there [Applause] [Music] [Applause] all right JZ gets the ball there picks it up in the corner met with a double Team trap Sophia's got the ball left hand dribbling around the perimeter back out excellent job oh almost in there's number 54 be strong with the ball [Applause] Bray Le arus had a good look in there rolled [Applause] [Music] [Applause] around all right so that's one of the things right there Bailey Lofton giving number [Applause] 32 just a quick calm down don't worry Bry everything will be fine ball comes in Jackie Burrows ends up with it gets it or tries to get it underneath [Applause] and brayy gets that one back to the younger C Hance [Music] [Applause] all right Paul comes in to number 31 turns around immediately tied up by GG and now Lincoln is going to try getting matched up number 21 Jaye SM fourth graders is able to get that one up uh fouled by number 43 Jackie [Music] [Applause] burough and let's see what Jaye can do at the line first one's up no good [Music] [Applause] got vogle back in the game brayy out Jackie Bru with the ball down the floor up no [Music] good Gigi has the player caught down there in the corner [Applause] coming up on 5 minutes 20 [Applause] seconds Falcons have a 10-point lead [Music] [Applause] 188 there's Sophia with the steal getting it up shots up no good gets her own rebound down no good Jackie's up chot no good Gigi gets it up no good boy they had four good opportunities there there's GG able to stop the drive Sophia almost gets that steal Gigi gets her hands in there and number 54 Jasmine Hendricks get that tied up what have a mass substitution here all right so the Huskies will get this one down trying to get a high screen up there draws two Defenders looking for some to pass it to nothing's [Applause] there shots up no good down the floor come the Huskies number 20 up no good and Lily Hayward down the floor jump stop put it in I put the microphone down Nate and I said it's good [Applause] H Sophia gets that shot up small cringe by the cheerleaders down there Jackie burs comes back in for the Huskies now I will tell you this and this is very encouraging you know the the Lincoln h and I think uhria also both both teams electing to play manto Man defense instead of in a Zone yeah so important that they learn the fundamentals of Defense early Jackie gets that shot up that was no good that was rebounded by Taylor across to number 24 it's good BL Smith gets that one in as the Falcons extend their lead [Music] [Applause] 22-8 Sophia is going to try to get that shot up no good all offensive rebound [Applause] Shelby sharp brings it down gets it to number 12 lyly Hayworth that ball is ripped out of there by Taylor number 55 to Sophia Who's down the floor gets the right-handed layup hey there you go way to get ahead of the defense Sophia pure gets that one up and number 13 Shelby Sharp unable to get that one [Applause] in little bit of confusion on whose ball it is as the clock ticks away good deflection there oh that was going to be a sure two points but number 25 Cory Vincent was able to break that one up Gigi gets that one up no good there's Jackie Burrows underneath out oh and it's a [Applause] [Music] travel 35 seconds 2210 fod has that lead there's Jackie Burrows boy I tell you what that kid is active she tried oh you know what she tried so hard she did dibbling she was trying to get the ball under control let's do that hurry up offense wide open wide open get it in pass it there shots up no good good steal and I think that was off a fous foot and that's the end of the third [Applause] quarter I just wanted her to pass it in so bad [Music] [Applause] there all right here are the fodrea Falcon cheerleaders [Applause] [Music] [Applause] all right shout out to those ladies there um not sure which two were not there but Taylor Ellison Jaden Cox uh Blakey stro Ariana Cole and Bella [Applause] England well let's see if we can't get some kind of comeback like we did here in the first game make this one exciting gig's going to go ahead and get dribbled around gets a good bounce pass [Applause] in you know if Jasmine can just get that rebound and secure it chin the ball not bring it down so that you know other people can get their hands on it get that rebound keep it above her head she's going to do just fine [Applause] got a tie up underneath there [Applause] ball all right down the floor We Go Gigi gets that one picked [Applause] [Music] up pressuring defense from the Huskies yep thought it was a little bit of a double dribble there Jackie Burrow's able to force that turnover [Applause] [Music] and we'll get this one in here Gigi brings the ball up the floor gets a good screen there at the top that shots up oh it's good what a shot that was a much needed basket for nothing but nether now we're going to see pick up our defense play stop it down there in the Baseline no there's Gigi again almost with her hands on it brayy almost got a def [Applause] flexion hey there's Jackie Burrows ahead of the crowd gets it deflected away number three for FR gets it up no good 11 has the rebound [Applause] so for 7even minutes 30 seconds left it looks like what Lincoln's going to try to do is trap whatever they can on defense Jackie gets that shot up coach late thought it got deflected [Applause] number 11 that's not in [Applause] there so once again GG will bring the ball down the floor oh able to keep that pivot frot Jasmine has that one tied up now Justin's going to see what we get here for an inbound play that one was stolen away by Trinity Green up [Applause] ahead covered up by Jackie Burrows really well there's Josan to help forces that turnover [Applause] all right Jim cly Hance giving a fan a [Music] warning that ball was stolen away up the floor [Music] where's Jackie burrow in that again I tell you she's about just about everywhere G's going to get this one down the floor trying to get ahead of everyone able to pick up the ball oh we got to work on pivots right there that's almost at the big one Jackie Burrows gets that shot and good as we get onto the 5 minute 20 seconds that lead is cut to eight and now the Huskies are going to try to trap on everything for something with their defense oh they've certainly got a chance Nate in the last five minutes but fodra just keeps the pressure up what's it going to take for the Lincoln Huskies to get back in this game they they have to um as they're dribbling they got to keep their head up and they've got to see who's open and get him that shot and number 13 did just that she was she kept her head up just wasn't able to convert on the layup for foda that's a good one BR is going to go to the line I see what you what you're saying Nate one of the things I saw Sophia pure she's done a really good job of trying to keep her head up but you know that's something that's difficult whether you're a fourth grader or a sixth grader right or seventh grader or ninth you're right you're right big Bradley gets that one up and let's see what she can do with this second one oh she used that bank just nicely so just like that is is a six-point lead for the Falcons quickly down the floor at the there able to clear the boards out got him trying to get that up and that is a travel 3 and A2 minutes left in the fourth quarter six-point ball game for sure brings the ball up the [Applause] court drible there got a good opening nothing there biley gets that ball down the floor she is being hounded by that [Applause] Husky and there's Jackie Bur with the rebound fifth grader dribbling the ball down the floor jump stop looks like she's going to the [Applause] [Music] [Applause] line as a reminder for um for girls games they can shoot at the 12T line if they want [Applause] [Music] [Applause] working on good form she's got a good routine Nate just able to convert those two and she ends up with a big get the steel you got to respect the hustle there oh absolutely don't give up on the play Green goes down that's no [Applause] good Jackie Burrows all over the ball and that's not a bad foul [Applause] no fodrea with a six-point lead got tied by GG Trinity is going to dribble it out flying fish underneath nothing there jump jum so with a minute and 10 it's into green no [Applause] good oh so much going on underneath there Padre able to come up with the basket I tell you Bailey fish like I had said early on you she just seems to be just a little bit everywhere um gets her team back up to eight that's a shot from way [Applause] outside we'll go ahead and stop the clock because we are under a minute and the game is within 10 [Applause] points trining to gets that ball down the floor looking to kind of back her way in Justin's going to try to get a steal 20 seconds left all right with 15 seconds F holding on to a 10-point lead rips that one out Bailey 10 has that one she's going to head on down the floor probably the last possession here two one and the shots off oh and the Falcons have swept the Huskies [Applause] [Music] tonight well I had I had the uh I was fortunate to be able to play Fida and just like uh Bailey did with us uh she was a big contributor for the Falcons tonight just about everywhere and got a lot of help from a lot of different people including Trinity Green number [Music] 53 um those two together certainly um tough Duo to handle for the Huskies it is it's only going to get better they have some uh great kids working hard um when you have fourth grader Joselyn Vogel and a fourth grader Sophia pure and fifth grader Jackie Burrows um getting quite a bit of time on the floor the future is bright for the Huskies and as you said earlier Nate both boys and girls programs have shown quite a bit of growth and even through a year like this covid-19 year um a lot of improvement on both teams yeah and you know it it's it it's just a matter of finding finding enough time to practice and work on some things but when we have a very very um condensed schedule like we do it's it's sometimes hard to to work on something before you have your next game certainly is is um I think for the Huskies as long as number 30 GG uh Gman continues to improve along with uh brayy Ernest and then they're in the middle uh Jasmine Hendrick number 54 um you know there's some there's some good things going on there awesome well we're going to go ahead and sign off Nate and we'll be back uh on Saturday morning for another bcsc uh ebl game we'll be giving you some bonus coverage make sure to tune in we'll be giving more details on that game tomorrow I'll make sure to post on Facebook as well as our YouTube channel so thank you Nate for another night of announcing this ebl uh CSA signature Showdown thank you and everyone be safe yep we'll see you soon

excellent so after 16 are we both friends then 24. what i'd like to point out about this is that remote friends can be interactive either by speaking or by typing their number into the chat for this particular activity i've also switched the screen format where the students are not looking from the overhead camera but from the camera attached to my computer so they can see um me a little bit closer and then other times we also use a present mode where they're able to see the entire smart board screen all right so we're going to start off by singing the apes on to have our brains remember some of those multiplication facts thumbs up if you're right good have a great remember all right friends so we're going to start off by saying sorry about that all right so the next thing i want to point out is um in math often we need to see student work and there are several ways that students can show their work in this particular case the student who is remote has taken a picture of the work and uploaded it to the seesaw platform you can see at the bottom that i'm able to give student feedback and they can open up their journal and see this message the other thing i'd like to point out is by this red arrow you can see seen by parents who have joined the seesaw family are able to see my feedback to students and um they can see the work that their student is completing in class i feel like having parents part of csa allows them to monitor their student work and have feedback from the teacher as well another way students are able to show their work is by actually typing right onto a document that's been uploaded so for this particular case you can see that the student used the typing feature to show their mathematical thinking and next up i'd like to introduce jennifer dube and grade two from doolittle school thank you um i'm going to kind of pick you back off of what michelle um was talking about so i'm going to go over some ways that we keep students that are remote and in person connected and interactive and then i'm also going to talk a little bit about some seesaw features that keep us connected and help me monitor progress so one of the big projects we do in second grade is a landforms project and it's really exciting and the kids make landforms out of dough and normally it's a big group effort we make the dough together but this year having half the students at home we had to kind of come up with some creative ways to have everybody do this project for this culminating activity so parents were very kind and either blocked out or made dough at home so we got onto the google meet which um they get onto every day for social studies anyway so when they came on this time we collaboratively and together um did our landform projects at the same time so my students in school were creating their land forms out of dough and my students at home were on the camera also doing it at the same time um so we did it all together we waited a few days we painted together um and so they were able really to kind of work together even though they're in two different locations so just another way that we um try to connect our remote learners and our in-person learners um so this is an example of the seesaw activity that goes with it so to check for um you know proper land forms and how they did on their project and give them a chance to show it off since i can't be at their house to look at it i created the a seesaw activity where they would record themselves talking about their project so i'll just give you a quick preview of this little girls hi mrs derby today i made um my project and um i'll show you what it looks like and um it it's really important they might see the same so this here's my ocean and there's like an octopus in the shark and then these things right here are my hills and um this is my mountain these things and this is my valley like through there and then it goes into the ocean and this is my waterfall and some waterfalls made stream but this one didn't because it went into the ocean and this is my volcano and i have three four three over here and then this is my plane all of the green stuff i'm missing so um as you can see she was able to explain you know all the different land forms and she was very proud of her work and able to share with me um i could go around to my students in school and look and they explained what their land forms they were making was but um this is a great way for me to connect with those kiddos at home and see what they're working on and so i'm also just going to show you another cool feature about the seesaw um my students every day take a picture of their problem set or their exit ticket so that i can keep them accountable and check on their work and see where you know people need help and whatnot and as michelle said we can leave comments down at the bottom which is great you can also leave voice comments so if you want to explain something more to them they can listen to a recording of you saying um what you need them to kind of work on and then also i was able to draw this picture of what i wanted her to show me for the next time so um she drew the discs correctly but we've been working on drawing them like a ten frame so i was able to draw the example of what i want her to do for the next time so that she could see what she needs to fix and work on that way so seesaw has been a great way to check in and keep kids accountable but also interact with them talk with them and see where they're at next thank you so you can see just from everything that the teacher shared with you tonight that they are really working very hard learning all kinds of new things on how to support their students that are doing remote learning and also their students in the classroom and how they're also working hard to balance that between in class and at home learning so they're doing great um the biggest piece also here they've shared a lot about the seesaw platform and how the special teachers are also providing the learning for students through the remote learning also our tech department has been having parent support sessions um and really it's to provide that technology support for the families to provide some software support especially on seesaw and the google platforms and also to give that open communication between home and school and to listen to the concerns from families that are remote and be for us to give us some feedback on how we can make it better and i think the biggest message is that this is all a learning process for everyone and every day is better than the day before but i really want to just congratulate the teachers that were here tonight and thank you so much for sharing all that learning that's happening it's amazing what's going on in the classroom so thank you thank you so we hope that through some of the presentations and shares that um allison and christine and michelle and jen and susan by the way video tonight and came at the end here that they shared that we can see that we're working really hard to try to keep a nice classroom community strong interaction between remote runners and class miners and we have some tools embedded right in see-saw the one thing but i don't know hopefully we know that all these are very easily embedded right in the program so we're not going to different programs buttons for students to click to be able to record video audio and so on so we want to thank thank you for your attention to this and i cannot thank the crew in this room enough for for sharing what they are doing on a daily basis and all of our teachers who are working hard each and every day to try to make this situation um as positive as it possibly could be so stop right here [Music] any questions for the board at this time sure can you hear us kevin i can hear you can you still hear me does the board have any questions for the presentation team thanks uh yeah can so with regard to the seesaw that is that an app on their chromebook is it something parents could log to you know via their desktop or laptop computers easily to review the schoolwork being done by the students is an app that parents can download and they can have it on their phone so they can get notifications through their phone it can also be accessed on the computer the students have access to safa through their clever portal so it is easily accessible for all persons involved anybody want to have one it looks a little bit like a social media feed for for the parents and students so um it's a natural kind of you see something that a student might have posted on the day from the paradigm and it's really easy to see that comment on it themselves like it any other questions from board members at first or oh i can't see yeah yeah thank you tony um i just wanted to comment firstly that uh that the system is incredibly and uh um and that the work that the teachers and and the administration have done to really synchronize all of these uh different applications together is is really fantastic it's a huge improvement over the um uh i guess hodgepodge is a strong word but you know the the system that we're using last year for remote learning this is uh a million times better than that and uh just a you know a great job for everyone and you know and keeping the children's interests together as perhaps some of you heard earlier the evening uh the teacher left our room and we began talking so it was me focus all day and to learn in a meaningful way i think is really great um interesting we have talked about this in the past what this is uh k-3 how are we going to expand this because it does seem to be um much more inclusive of everybody and including parents and um you know how do we how do we extend to higher grades to higher grades yeah and obviously you know there's that balance too where we need to have it developmentally scaffold in an appropriate way too right so you know at the elementary level for a second grader who's home and we're trying to monitor this is even more intensive than i would say if the student was in person you know using seesaw provides such incredible feedback they you know think back just you know five years ago if a student was doing a ditto and bringing it home you're not of what necessarily provides it's unbelievable as we you know have developmental differences right high school kids we're trying to prepare for full auto time so they're going off to college uh shortly or beyond high school and need to be able to manage more of their own work we have systems like google classroom and powerschool readily available at the high school i you can get as a parent a daily email you can get an email every time a grade changes from powerschool if you want to monitor how your your child is doing but then also you know opportunities to connect with the teacher to find more information about how that's going in terms of engagement we have put 60 of these audio classrooms in across the district the cheshire education foundation has generously donated 10 more that helps the engagement significantly but we're also revamping what we're doing at the high school with a more synchronous learning model than starting now um and so hopefully between those all those things you know we'll find higher levels of engagement you know frankly we're going to school every day which is a step ahead of of most people at this point as well so hopefully you know that combination supports this in this really unique timeline i don't know if uh ann or katherine have any questions uh before they pop back up so it's tonight the first night or first time when we started a meeting or tonight i think folks noticed little little weird issues only because we're in three different rooms three different purposes um and trying to switch control back and forth normally that's not the case are our classrooms combining different rooms to do a lesson yeah that would be very rare that we would have um throwing it between multiple rooms like that uh but this is our first time doing that and there may be a need for that i i think we've talked a lot about the idea that this is we've been given a huge barrel of lemons and so we're trying to find a lot of different ways to make lemonade and you know this is just another learning experiences you know for us as a school system and doing this tonight you know kevin and all the really intelligent people marlene is in the room and robin and kerry but a lot of intelligent people in other rooms and that participated tonight they'll go back and think about how do we is there a way to leverage what we just did tonight to support engagement and learning across the district we navigated a tech issue and how do we interact here and how do we invent the slide there and um are we seeing and hearing each other those are all cases that each teacher who has remote students is navigating each and every day and that's a whole new skill set a whole new way of managing their classrooms and i can't reiterate enough how amazing our teachers are doing um add to that management at that navigation um ken mentioned that it's getting better each and every day but this is a whole new skill set um thinking about how to interact with our students and set up the day uh and i can't compliment our teachers enough for going to those places i will tell you they are much further along and they believe that they are they're doing absolutely incredible things so just take a moment to acknowledge uh that part of the work that we do thank you yeah we certainly acknowledge the fact that i mean everyone in school has had an adapt quickly technology and i know a lot a lot of professionals don't start with school officially open you know i think the board recognizes the fact that this hasn't been really an easy year to try that features a couple of speed and technology and utilizing it um you know it's one more curveball throughout them but i think they've so far knocked out of the part um so so i know someone had a question that was our spokes that i thought her in the hallway earlier so i've total number classrooms we have in cps how much how many of these classes are equipped and i know that the education foundation uh donated some funds for additional 10 more classrooms thank you that's always a huge help so are we halfway there forward away there oh we're probably just fully getting there yeah we're probably about a quarter of the way there at this point and a lot like everything else that we did at the start of this year we had no idea what was going to happen but i think a lot of people thought oh my god we'll be full remote by you know the end of september um and so as we learn and experience we're just evolving and i think what we've learned from this experience is that these audio rooms uh are really beneficial for our students again not just during this coming time where we have remote learners but during a traditional classroom setup the the audio in here is so powerful to be a part of that you know it's something i think we're going to continue to explore as a school system moving forward thank you jeff any other comments or feedback adam uh i just took one more question um you know the uh installing these this microphone system is appears to be a permanent installation or semi-permanent i know that it can be moved around and stuff with effort um have you guys you know let's say you know two years from now or three years from now um have you already sort of have an idea of how these systems can be used when everyone is just in person or or what were your thoughts on on that sure so i mean you can hear the difference when i wear the mic around my neck too yeah yeah amplifies that's great yeah so uh when we come back to quote uh what are the benefits of the current system i think as we continue to install these systems we probably wouldn't add as many cameras as we do now but the benefit in the camera and maybe you know we focus on a more portable method for the camera but the benefit for the camera is if you know sparky broke his leg is too much trouble to get in down the road perhaps someday we're either recording a lesson or we're allowing a student to uh remote in and still participate in the classroom the real benefit though i think post covid is the audio setup that will be available for our classrooms there is data supporting just the enhanced audio component leading to greater understanding and higher achievement it is a lot easier here yeah it's crystal clear when you're there you can hear it when i put the mic on and when the teacher is wearing this it's through the mat yeah even through the mask and that was one of the issues that we thought that this would be beneficial too it's a little tougher to hear and we gain so much comprehension to reading facial cues and when that is taken away for people that are sitting in the back of the room it's that much more challenging and you can hear this crystal clear even though you can't read my lips you can't see my face but you can hear everything i'm saying is if i'm sitting right next to you benefits to hearing impaired students students with attentionality issues kids with central auditory processing disorder which i'm from singing yourself rather all of those type of students benefit from having just the implementation system in the classroom so that is what we think takes us you know yeah every student benefits students with you know as marlene was saying central auditory processing or attention issues hearing issues those those students benefit even more so everybody wins really yeah so with regards to the audio you said everybody um everybody wins the kids at home the feedback that you've gotten from the remote learners is great clarity yeah it's funny you say that because um working with the cheshire foundation we wanted to put a name to it and so i went to our high school marketing class and said what do you think and so one of the first names that you know that i love that i know andrew is a fan of is ramplified for amplified rooms but not every you know school guys rams is the mascot but another one of the three names that they initially proposed was the clarity classroom and those kids understand it better than most because in a cohort setting you know their home it you know half of them are home in back and so they experienced this and for them to one of the three names they came up with was clarity classroom said to me that you know it's a different experience when you're at home participating in this sort of audio quality yeah no i'm just saying because there's going to be moments when even the you know the most disciplined teacher would probably turn to look at a board and the voice would trail off a little bit sure this is fantastic yeah you never i mean you never lose it and catherine and ann i know you guys are participating from home maybe one of you uh could share with us your experience at home what it's like to have the audio there well the i'll go first um the audio is really great i mean i'm i'm amazed at how clear it is so it's i can see where you know students would have a much easier time remotely um staying engaged because everything is so clear it's great and by the way you're super clear here too yeah yeah oh really oh good yeah see that was another you know reason that we wanted again there are there are reasons to do this during kobit and then but you know please i hope that kobe doesn't last forever and we're not having to worry about this perpetually but um during covet we wanted the students at home to be able to hear but as you guys are experiencing the students at home it's like they're sitting right now when they speak everyone in the room can hear them plain as that and so they're as close to being a part of this room as they can be without being in the room so that's that's during kobe that's pretty important for us i would just i would just add um that it is difficult to hear the other kids in the room especially the farther away they are from the mic and we can turn that up that's a simple setting so if a student it's simple if you're not the superintendent and don't do this every day but for teachers who do this every day they it's easy to turn that up and we make those adjustments all the time sometimes it's too loud in the back so we make those adjustments and it's just a setting on the computer oh that's great just is the um of the two components the audio which is the more expensive okay well the video is a pretty small fee it's um the camera we use although it's a very high quality uh camera but i mean you could kind of purchase this for home use it's not a special ht camera or anything like that it the audio in installation are the most expensive part of this so because this this actual microphone is like the next generation of microphones i guess i'm not a audio visual expert but audio visual experts joined us when we engaged in this process and you know they said this is next generate this is super high quality it's the equivalent of buying like a 5g phone today it's going to get the most shelf life out of it as opposed to we could have bought a cheaper 4g phone and you know to continue on with that metaphor and you know three years from now those may have been obsolete this is going to carry us for a number of years okay i'll i'll preserve sure to answer that like the cost though it's about three grand a room for the all the components no and the video and the installation yeah so generally speaking about not about the audio but about the video is it adequate is it great are there improvements that you feel we should make not necessarily to the video i think the video is a bit of a it's a stop gap it's a it's a back-up plan um when we come back from covid uh it's obviously i mean you can see kevin on the screen pretty well particularly if we we pin him out you know something like that we can we can see the classroom pretty well it's a quality picture um so i don't know that it necessarily quote an upgrade would be necessary um and you know with privacy issues we don't want to show the whole room we we did this intentionally so i think the camera that we have is is very good for the purpose it was intended so i'm taking it from a slightly different perspective not a wider angle but a narrow angle can you lock the camera in or can you just move over to the smartboard feed if that's something in particular the teacher wants to show to the student if you can't yeah you can present screen in the student at home doesn't see any of the camera it only sees what's on the smartphone yeah okay or i think it was michelle early maybe that was saying that you can see you know if we set up a laptop too or other cameras we can do different angles so i i have to just take a step back and thank marlene and kevin but i also know that they would definitely thank people like mike papa b jacobs tom leewock scott conway a cast of several who worked all summer long to make this sort of stuff possible but have doubled that effort since we started to order as many chromebooks as we had to prep them b jacobs mike papa and b's husband were working over weekends he's not necessarily a tech guy but we just needed more hands and they were you know going above and beyond and you know that was a volunteer effort um to put the chromebooks together and get them into our students and staff hands and now they they go around marlene and that team have set up visits to each school so that people can consult because teaching is hard um doing this is harder and anything that our tech staff can do to help they have been there 150 it's not even fair to say that it's like it's unbelievable the effort they made awesome so just in life just kind of said that we have a lot of people here tonight uh i want to thank kevin and kelly the entire staff here first of all for sticking out tonight staying late after a very long day uh three different presentations the showcase and for folks that are watching you know we have uh tim andrew and faith in the room uh we also have robin which we'll talk about in a minute we have marlene for everyone that's stuck around tonight uh thank you and so i appreciate the effort we all appreciate the fact that it's been a learning curve technology but we have some really great feedback especially if i want whatever so thank you for the commitment thank you for adapting to this and making it with budget season coming up very quickly for us if jeff hasn't reached out to you already i'm sure uh he will but there's any approvals you think the board needs to invest in this we'd love to hear from you in a couple well actually about a month so unless there's any other feedback or comments um [Applause] as i am before which is the appointment of our director of people personnel services thank you mr parading [Music] okay here we are on the agenda um so as you know we've had the unenviable task of replacing our pupil personnel services director mrs cousins this fall and i want to thank the cadre of parents teachers support staff and administrators who helped with thorough hiring process we had several outstanding candidates and the selection process was certainly not easy miss robert and kerry has spent the last 11 years is cheshire's elementary grade special services supervisor over that time she has focused on providing exceptional care and support for our students and families while we have seen an amazing student achievement growth across the board much of that growth can be attributed to ms carey's efforts to ensure that identified students at the elementary grades are receiving high quality and supportive instruction she's known by her families as someone who's fair knowledgeable and collaborative her peers respect her for her work ethic creativity in supporting students families and staff and her tireless dedication to all miss kerry has articulated a deep knowledge and vision for supporting students in our school system ladies and gentlemen of the cheshire board of education i'm proud of nominee robin ann carey is our next pupil personal services director for the cheshire public schools thank you uh is there a motion from the board andrew yeah move the cheshire board of education appoint robin and kerry to position of director people personal services effective november 6 2020.

this is just this number broken down for the past three months so it's those same things that we saw graphically but we went through with the numbers of the positivity rates for each age group their number of positives number of tests for the past three months so that's what you're seeing here i won't go through all the numbers because we just saw it graphically but i just wanted to break it out so you can see and then this is a positivity rate by age group again this is pretty much that same chart except this is the three months so the light blue is august darker blue is september and the greenish color is october so um our positivity rate what has been increasing hold on let me pull it up here um uh in certain age groups and you know gone down a little bit so we saw a drastic decrease in our positivity rate in zero to four um while we saw uh a climbing positivity rate between five to nine um our 10 to 14 has kind of stayed the same with a increase in positivity rate between 15 and 19.

this site and more start grades 1 2 and 3 next week and i cannot go out and spend thousands of dollars out of my pocket because these things are supposed to be provided by the site and the district action we need to adopt the agenda as is yes mostly second all in favor aye aye any opposed recognition presentation nope kylie do we have any public comments we do not superintendent comment yeah i will save the majority of the comments for the end but a couple things having to do with the election there was a flyer that went out to many households in apple valley school district that indicated that there was a lawsuit against the school board for five million dollars um i just want to set that straight that's an inaccurate piece of information and i believe that when something like that is published we have the ability to at least publicly state that it is inaccurate um the second thing is i i concur it was nice to have um mr bender reelected without um being opposed at first we were a little worried he didn't show up on the ballot but that was because that's the process now if there is no other um nobody running against you you are apparently just appointed is what their term is so congratulations and then i did reach out um to each of the other members that were um running um for mrs davis's seat and um they both were very happy to talk and understood that um there is somebody that is ahead and as soon as it's certified we'll um obviously get them in and get them all set up with everything i don't know what it is about apple valley school board elections but they are tight every time and so this one is is very tight and the last thing is mrs davis although most people believe this is your last board meeting you still have one more and you do have to come please because we do want to celebrate you publicly um and so we do have a board meeting on december 10th which will be ms davis's last board meeting and then we will have the new board seated and do our um normal organizational meeting at the 17th okay well rick we'll talk about it i don't know yet and maybe something will change between now and then that gives us a little bit more flexibility so i would push forward yeah i mean at least family members at least we'll see what we can do and it may um require a movement of where we meet someplace we'll we'll figure something out because i agree she's given of her service for um quite a while and we appreciate that so this is big this is big board comments mr self uh i i just had a couple items i'm sure you attend one of those meetings i attended a meeting joint meeting with the austin manila county school board association riverside and we have the speakers the state uh instrumental public instruction he was there and the csba president which i know her real well and and i also recently attended a couple of centers it was only on voice because my screen was not working and i when my last item is that it may be it's not not urgent if the apple valley proceeds with the construction of the train station you know the las vegas airway uh they are projecting 12 1200 or 1200 homes in the area in the north side and so what what in the near future we'll take i'm sure mr schoenberg will take a look at that to see if we have any sites for potential elementary school okay so that's all i have mr bender i'm just happy to see that we have actually have live bodies back in our classroom you know pre-k in the first and second grade and hopefully we'll get a lot more and i'll be great when we can have the public come to the school board meetings again only in here i know mr raleigh i just want to echo what dennis said i actually received a phone call or not phone call but talked to a mother today that has a child in school and uh she's very happy and the family is very happy and hopefully we can continue to add more children to it i've been beating the drums it's very important the kids get back so and again uh trenay thank you for clarifying the uh the negative smears that people see in the uh i appreciate it [Music] my comment um i need i need to take this opportunity to congratulate christy kraft for getting her doctorate and now she's dr croft in spite of uh losing her mother and all of the things that has happened to her life and she still moved forward and having said that i'm really curious about the information that we just received about the the school and the supplies would you please as a superintendent will you look into what that's where that school is and try to resolve that issue so that we don't have to have the this kind of conversation i also need to take this opportunity to congratulate our transportation department when in the school in the package it showed how well they did with the chp inspection and that they didn't have dings on the inspection so they did a really good job going forward because this will be their first year without miss miss stillman uh so is it second year oh okay it's your second year it's the second year but they did a good job i was really impressed with with that um there was one more thing i wanted to talk about um [Music] otherwise you know i think uh the having the kids come back is a good thing um but we need to keep our eyes on on all of the things that could possibly shake us up um i really look forward to seeing the children you know or even getting on the campus because yes they are on campus but others may not go in to see them so i'm really impressed with what how we open slowly um and not in a hurry to to get it done thank you so much mr mrs davis yes well i i have to tell you i'm really excited about not being here it i've been here since i think 73 19 maybe before you guys were born oh wow and it it occurs to me those stories um and then the best part is when um when dr mitchell asked her about the books that they're reading and they're reading brown girl dreaming right which is um a book by student of color so it just reminded me of what the students presented last week in terms of um diversify our narrative and so it's really that we already are diversifying the narrative in some of our classrooms so okay um next up board member arianas good evening everyone thank you guys all for joining us in the school board meeting and i also would like to go ahead and thank board member yolanda rodriguez pena um these are the things and there is really it's a it's the hybrid information just saying that kids will be here every day that's really what it is okay um i do want to share a couple things i do have this that i passed out to you this is an updated um from the updated benchmarks from the department of health services um they came out this morning um in when it comes to the benchmarks um and the number of cases the number of cases as we all know um is going up pretty much nationwide it's going up in yamapai county um these are county numbers and so um the one that came out today is 53 cases per hundred thousand you can see there's one that's not highlighted yellow because that's my estimate um based on the department health services um data that's available to everybody um and it's probably gonna go up another i'd say almost 20 to 72 cases per hundred thousand okay so we still still are in the in the what's considered the moderate risk range um but just something to kind of keep an eye on the percent positivity has gone up um it's now at 5.6 which puts us it moves us from the minimal risk up to the moderate risk range for percent positivity um that threshold is five so anything over five is moderate risk anything below five is uh minimal risk um and then last is the code like illnesses which is the basically hospitalizations out of four counties yavapai coconino apache and navajo and that's relatively low that has to be below five and it still is well vilified okay um the ade uh well actually let me back up the department of health services um change their guidelines on how to use the benchmarks um last week i don't know if you heard the kind of in the news it was a bit controversial they were saying they they changed them to reflect what schools wanted the schools in the ade said what schools because we don't know what schools had input on this but anyway they're saying that initially the guidance was you should be looking at all online instruction when one of the benchmarks either cases percent positivity or covered like illnesses goes into the rent which is a substantial risk and we're not close to that yet so not something we have to worry about right now um the new guidance says you should be considering all in all online when all three benchmarks are in the red which has not been the case ever since they've had benchmarks so um um even when things were at at the highest um that was not the case so um you know i know someone was asking about how things are going in um at the schools i really think that um you know there's there's i information went out about a student that was tested positive for covent at the high school and we had to that information came to us last friday our district nurse did some contact tracing and we had to ask some kiddos from the high school that were close contact to stay home and quarantine there was an article in the paper that discussed that a little bit and i thought the paper did a decent job of describing what was going on but we've had one student at one school for the entire time that we've been the hybrid and all in person that has been positive there is rumors about one at territorial those rumors came up because a staff member read the video or was watching the video that the district nurse put out about the high school case then saw who was talking and said well she's here at territorial that means we must have a case of territorial that is not the case we have had no positive cases at territorial school despite what the rumors are saying okay we've had one um contract staff member that i've i've told you about that was positive that came on the campus before fall break even and we had some kiddos that were um uh asked a quarantine because of that so we've had one adult and one child on one campus the entire time we don't know of any kiddos or adults that have reached that have gotten covet transmitted on campus i think that the staff that's an indication of what we're doing right now is working to keep our kids safe i really think that's a good indication um did the transition um so um we still have worried staff members as we as they deserve to be worried this is still not you know we still need to be prudent we don't want the pandemic fatigue to to get us and get our guard down because we want to make sure that we're we're staying prudent and doing what we need to do and we are trying to keep that up the transition to online for the high school middle school is work is going um there are some families that are not happy because we're kind of holding them those kids to to some requirements to do the work we have kids that have not done anything why they've been online zero and we're we're keeping those kids accountable because they are not being successful and um if they can't be successful online we're telling them well you need to need to either come to school to be successful or maybe try something else because what we're doing for you right now is not working there are a lot of families that it is working and we want to keep that keep it available for those families but we're concerned about the kiddos that aren't being successful um about 15 of our families are still online 50 of our kiddos are still online that's uh from the entire district and um so you know we're doing our best um it's it's relieved a lot of the stress from our second from our middle school and high school teachers um k5 we have dedicated online teachers at those grade levels and so that's a little bit easier for them to to manage um but you know we have um i i've been following the numbers in the community we have about two-thirds of yellow tech county's population on the side of the mountain in the quad city area um we've had you know anywhere from um like for example today we had um 48 cases yesterday only 13 of them were in the quad city area so one fourth of the cases with two thirds of the population so things are there was a video that came out from leslie horton who's the the director of the yuppie county um health department and um that came out i think last week she had mentioned that there's some senior living facilities that are having outbreaks and there's um a couple of outbreaks in the verde valley right now so that's that's accounting for a lot of those numbers still need to be concerned um that it is still out in the community we can still be impacted we still need to keep up with what we're doing but um right now if we've had like i said one one adult and one student in the time that we've been in part person between hybrid and all in person i think that's actually a pretty good result and we're you know working with the health department to make sure that those kids that are exposed are are doing what they need to do and so they are staying healthy and keeping everyone else healthy questions um as the mom of a kindergartner i have to tell you that you know juke wearing his mask has just become second nature like he doesn't even he doesn't complain about it it's just i at first i was a little worried about you know just them having you but he has it on before he gets out of my car and goes and he's a kindergartner you know so i just think that if my kid's like that and he's not i mean these kids are just getting used to it you know i i hate i'm not gonna lie i hate to see it on them i think it's sad to see the masks on those young kids but the fact that they're just getting used to it i think is you know a good thing well i do want to say i want to give kudos out to the kids um because you know unfortunately wearing a mask has become second nature yeah and we've had very few problems with the mask wearing we still have the online there are still families that that are keeping some kids home because they don't want their kids wearing masks and that's fine yeah um as long as they're staying up on their work online we're okay with that but um and i also want to thank families because we are getting calls um when there is you know for example somebody might have had a family get together one person tests positive and the family's keeping those kids home not sending them to school and that's keeping people safe also and so i want to thank families for for thinking of others and and their own kids and um you know stepping up and taking care of business when they need to so i think that's happening as well so i want to kudos to the kids and kudos to our families for doing what they need to do to keep our kids safe and then they can go to the cafeteria now yes and they can play on the playground now those are all huge things yes you know we're we're trying to make it as normal as possible in a non-normal situation yeah yeah okay uh well this is an action item nobody has any more questions appreciate a motion please i'll make a motion to observe the in-person instruction guidelines are you all in favor aye all right thank you good job john item 10b mr scholl um revision to determination of excess capacity for open enrollment so um annually usually during the summer you the board approves the what grade levels are open for open enrollment which are not and so with things kind of instructional models changing we have online we have in person we have other things going on uh i thought and then we have a lot of kids that are gone you know we're not necessarily have the same number of kids that we had before so i wanted to go through and kind of revise these um i've asked the principals we have a moratorium on open enrollment right now which means means we're just kind of we're taking applications until the board makes does action and comes up with these new guidelines and so um the before i just had kind of in person instruction there was just one group um kinder through 12th grade i've kind of split that up and split up the teacher so now we have an online instruction on open enrollment as well kinder through 5th 6 through 12 we kind of left open just because we have edge annuity to cover that also um we down below we have our special needs classes and that really hasn't changed we only had openings in our edp course uh classroom before and that's all we have now so um so this is these are just revised numbers um to use for the schools to accept open enrollment and not the only other thing that i'd like to ask and this was a request of of the administrators in the past for example if you look we have um kindergarten is closed but first grade is open and say we had two kids come a first grader and a kindergartner from the same family if one kid got in open enrollment we usually let the other end we're asking to waive that that we're only you know if you have two kids and one is eligible for open enrollment one's not you gotta make a choice um just because we get impacted too much um and that's something that we you know we're complicated right now we have larger class sizes in some of these areas we're just asking to kind of wave that um as well so um on the um the action requested it does say that children of employees which we still want to include current open enrollment students so we're not going to kick anyone else out and then we want to just kind of leave it at that where it says and the siblings the current open enrollment students we want to just exclude that um that portion on the motion so we wouldn't go there so we want to cross out and the siblings of the current exactly please please that way we still meet the the letter of the law we still are open to open enrollment for those that want to come and for where we have capacity to do that so if someone that's take that has actually opted for online ingenuity in december they could decide or in january i mean they could decide to come back does that change these numbers if what we would probably do is it doesn't change the number of kids and what we what we have what we may end up doing is collapsing some of those sections so say a teacher that teaches um first and second grade open enrollment i'm sorry online instruction we may collapse those and have one teacher do both grade levels like a mixed grade level and put that teacher into the classroom where they're needed okay so there may be some some it wouldn't change the number of kids in the grade level so we can accommodate that if it's open before we open after okay yeah but to your point i i i thank you for bringing that up we are still going to keep the option of having the ability for parents to take their kids online for third quarter or bring their online kids in person that will still be available any other questions this is an action item we would approve uh appreciate please a motion with a revision i'll make the motion to prove the revised determination of excess capacity for the 2021 school year and determined that children of employees current open enrollment students enrolled in 19 and 20 are not subject to the open enrollment policy all in favor aye thank you this meeting thank you very much

further let miss carrie be compensated according to the collective bargaining agreement through the cheshire board of education and the cheshire administrative personnel very second second faith discussion and robin you're welcome to come sit up here just so people can see yeah everyone know who you are just to be clear on this this is an appointment that you as a superintendent make and this is a ceremonial show of support by the board of ed just for people who are watching yeah sure is that correct yeah the board of education has to appoint all administrators but as a board of education by law you hire one employee and that's me and i hire all the other employees um so yeah but the board does appoint formally all administrators per policy so go ahead mr grippo i just want to say again congratulations on your appointment uh we had a little discussion uh earlier and we've got to meet you formally and uh i think you're going to do a great job and congratulations thank you thank you very much i'm i'm really very excited to um continue to support cheshire public schools in this world exciting for me and i'm looking forward to it any other uh this channel i was just going to say you know we saw you in action last year with a highland showcase and then our discussion informal discussion tonight and i was just amazed with the fluency that you demonstrated just moving through the entire program i was in awe so welcome aboard congratulations uh the director the former director of public personnel services was tracy hussey correct she was also the principal of hummus in school she she served in that capacity the pbs director oversees honest in school so is that so will you be is this role the same or is it i'm just wondering the rules of sure sure that's a great question so you know what we've done is take a step back and say organizationally what's you know what are the strengths and weaknesses we have within our leaders strengths and weaknesses per se but what are areas of specific expertise how do we best detail all of the needs and demands we have as a school system with the strengths of our staff and so actually robin and i are working through that process now well she will always oversee hummingston school for her her role as pps director we may have some other uh administrator working on more of the day-to-day operations so you know like i said we try and align uh the responsibilities and those always evolve you know things have evolved tremendously in the last year so you know we're trying to align that so that we can you know best meet our student needs so that's you know kind of to be determined at this point okay so it's a good question so do you think sure some of that discussion what's come out of that is i mean our vision our vision for hummus in school is it's an extension of the high school so it's a program that's been designed for students who need additional support or more than support than what's available in the environment of the high school it's a smaller environment it's a therapeutic environment but it's essentially an extension of the high school so our hope is that in looking at the position and looking at the involvement in it that we're going to be able to really breach and connect hummusting to the high school and vice versa so that when we look at transitioning our students from the high school to huntington we have a smooth transition and the staff is fully informed to be able to pick right up and support that student and then when that student is ready to return to the high school that communication and that bridge is open for them to then return so i think based off of those visions and that discussion you know we're going to continue to talk about how we want that to happen in a nice smooth way and who are the players that will be involved in that sure anything from our online friends to steal a term from earlier tonight uh no i i just also wanted to um congratulate robin i think this is fantastic i'm i am delighted that uh you are and you know you already know cheshire you know the students you know you know you know what everything that you're going to be dealing with and it's great that we were able to um basically you know kind of move you along to the next level um internally so i'm really happy i know that you'll do i'm sure a great job and uh so it's exciting and congratulations again thank you thank you very much well robin i said earlier congratulations thank you thank you for staying on and taking on this role like very familiar with your achievements here it's just nice to see the continuity and then of you here and i think the great things for our students so thank you unless there's any other comments or feedback the motion is move that the cheshire board education appoint robin and kerry to the position of director pupil personnel services effective number six 2020 further that miss gary be compensated in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement between the cheshire bar education and the cheshire administrative personnel all board members of favor please raise your hands it is unanimous congratulations robin [Music] so congratulations uh moving on item number five on our agenda is the discussion a potential approval contract between the cheshire board of education and the education association of cheshire jeff and or vincent or marlene do you want to walk us through the highlights sure i'm happy to do that with the um eac contract recommendation first of all uh i want to hit thank you tony for some of the highlights we have approximately 400 teachers in our school system who are deeply committed to supporting all of our students and as you've seen tonight uh our our students have found incredible success and i would be remiss if i did not take this opportunity to thank all of our certified staff of course all of our other staff here we're tonight talking about the teachers in our school system um they're some of the best in america and that's really on display every day and i i just want to take a moment to acknowledge that particularly during this time when all of us i mean i understand that all of us are are asked to do different things in our livelihoods and in our lives and uh our teachers have been really flawless with making that transition there's always room for growth though and that's one of the things that i respect most about our teachers is that you know almost to a fault they're never satisfied they're always trying to do better and our students are the incredible beneficiaries of their dedication so that being said the board of education and the leadership for the teachers union the educators association of treasurer engaged in deep conversation about particularly during these challenging fiscal and uncertain fiscal times how do we come to an agreement about what's fair uh for them as educators and and what makes sense for us physically as a community so the uh some of the significant language adjustments we made uh highlighted around the school year so uh cheshire high school is one of the few high schools in connecticut where uh teachers were asked to teach six classes and we identified that as an area you know that mutually what what can we do there to best support our students and so um through the negotiations process we have moved the a third of the teachers at the high school will be teaching five classes directly but that sixth period will be spent providing academic supports or collaborative time each of the next three years will kind of phase that process and starting in the 21-22 school year we have added some more teacher directed early release time for middle and elementary staff as well to provide more collaborative opportunities for teachers as we talk about tonight you know we are our teachers are always learning and trying to improve their craft and just sharing this information uh with each other on the fly every day has been really beneficial we want to try and leverage that uh as we move forward as a school system i appreciate as a working parent although my kids are older now it's not that long ago that i remember what do i do with my kids on those days we're going back on some of the days that we had previously scheduled this is a central office team to kind of soften that impact on parents as well um the uh you know of course the the biggest component to all of this is is the financial piece uh in the 2122 school year the there are two real fiscal components that we look at one is a general wage increase increase and the other is a step increase the cost of moving up steps there are 14 steps on the teacher union contract so you start at year one and move up each step each year that you successfully complete and up to 14 and at that point 14 years you're on that top step and that that pay only changes with general wage increase so uh next year or excuse me for the 21 22 school year there will be no step advancement but all i employ all teachers will see a 1.75 wage increase the medical co-share that they're expected to pay is 15 in that first year in the second year the uh general wage increase will be 1.23 with a 1.33 step increase so there will be step advancement and that will cost us about 1.33 a grand total of 580 000 in the first year 863 in the second year teachers will have a higher medical co-share in that second year of 16 the third year uh 1.5 general wage increase 1.29 step for a total of 965 000 dollars uh then they have a medical co-share of 17 uh the third year 1.75 general wage increase 1.27 step increase for a total of 172 804 and a medical co-share of 18 so there's offsets on the wage increase by increased medical co-share that our teachers pay and the other thing you need to know is that those numbers are in terms of how much the total cost impact will be our projections because this would assume that no teachers are retiring is limited turnover so you know that we do have very limited turnover in cheshire um because i think people appreciate being part of a great team and being supported but um it's not exact so you can't you can't you know say four years from now it's it was supposed to be a million 0072 why is it 995 it's because there is you know turnover that occurs so um i will certainly see the fact that mr manciana is much more uh financially versed than i am um in many other ways too but if you have any questions for either of us i know we could certainly be happy to answer them well what i'd like to do is check i'm going to give you an opportunity to get some just for folks watching uh the board as the details been aware for some time but we want to give you the opportunity to summary because there's a lot of components to the process that they did a good job summarizing it i know the bone marrow has asked the question so uh so we're going to send you guys a discussion and i'm going to entertain an emotion so i can make a motion uh mr chairman i'd like to make a motion uh move that the cheshire board of education approves the collective bargaining agreement with the education association of cheshire for the period of july 1 2021 through june 30 2025.

this is a heat map of our cases in danbury right now this is from the beginning so this is kind of where we are seeing cases for a little while during our august spike we saw a primary primarily we were only seeing cases um in the downtown area since then uh the radius has or i'm sorry the diameter has increased for uh the number of cases it's more spread out so as before where we are seeing most of our cases in downtown neighborhoods it's kind of growing and increasing in size and where we're seeing cases geographically so for right now are where we are currently uh our 14 day rolling average is 39.2 per 100 000 um and that is uh that's going by the state numbers they they put this number out today so that um goes what we talked about before with the event date so that has a test end date of october 31st um so that is the last date and then this is that number there and then our positivity rate over the past 14 days is 8.6 which is also increased from what we've been seeing we've been um pretty much throughout this whole time since august we've been around between four and five percent um then we saw a slight increase between six and seven percent and now we're steadily seeing over eight percent so then i just wanted to show and put up a addendum four which is um the what we look at with our metrics in uh it's developed to make decisions about schools and in person learning so um this is uh that first part which is what we uh what what we looked at which is our 14-day average of new cases per 100 000 um so right now we're at 39.2 which would put us in the less in-person learning section and then the secondary indicators which is the positivity rate over the past 14 day which is at 8.6 percent um you the things that you want to look at is if it's trending flat to upwards um ours at this point is trending upwards um our speed of change when we look at that with the number of cases um it has been going up pretty quickly last week our 14-day average was 22.8 and now we're at 39.2 so that's a pretty uh dramatic increase over the past uh week so that's all i have in my presentation if anyone has any questions i can make a few comments too okay great let me just meet myself can you hear me there yeah we can hear you dr bank yes thanks so cara um thank you for the numbers and the date and um being uh just so um a data driven uh in a very emotional time uh if i can just give you the perspective uh my perspective on base based on data and the danbury hospital and greater danbury medical community's perspective we went from a a rate in our seven hospital network danbury being the biggest where we had for all seven hospitals less than 10 admissions total between all the hospitals uh we have the same steep curve and that we have gone from 10 to 20 to 40 now we're close to 80 admissions that's uh number one uh we similarly at the highest rate since uh well before memorial day the thing that kind of distresses me and gets me really concerned is that when we're in april we were we actually turned the corner and there was sunlight ahead of us because it was getting warmer we had more of an opportunity to go outside we had no other states in the country um were having outbreaks so we could we could um get resources whether it's supplies or staff from around the country and also people really afraid and diligent the problem is this we're moving indoors on everything we do their whole country uh is essentially in the red i'm not trying to use hyperbole but i'm saying that because there's no one to draw resources or supplies or staff we're on our own here um unlike back in april and there's uh again this is probably a little bit my own personal opinion but i see a a bit of complacency in the subsets of our society compared to april uh we've had numerous um examples where um there's been gatherings of significant size not only on the traditional holidays or weekends but uh social establishments having literally hundreds of people in um and people were just they just basically were broken they just want to go out and and have an event there's weddings there's a lot of so the point is um based on the data there's uh and from the social experiences we're i can see why we're gonna we're gonna unfortunately get worse before we get better and so the reason why we do this is because if we can predict where we're going to be from a um overall positivity rate hospitalization rate and the like then that gives us more direction to make evidence-based decisions on what we need to do relative to our school system and to keep our our kids and our families safe again the last thing we want to do is set our teachers and our children our school system back by having another day of uh learning when they're not with their teachers and believe me i i completely understand that but i also understand that for every 100 people that are positive this data shows at least a couple are going to die at least the date early in the year was that it was more the area of like at least three people were going to die it's less than that now because a we have better treatments and b we have um more people being tested with milder symptoms so admittedly the death rate is lower but i just want to highlight the idea that um myself i personally no one wants us to open up our schools and and and have our children participate in sports clicker activities uh and in school learning more than me but i think we gotta also look at the data so uh cara i'll turn it back over to you thank you dr beck so i guess i don't know kevin or dr sal if there's anything uh any questions uh doctor fox on did he want to make it please yeah well let me let me ask something i i think it's interesting in the summer months when the when the rate is not you know it's not high i think i think not only people can spend more time outdoor but the important thing is that is that the the children are not at school so that they don't have a crowd in the school and they are they're at home more more more likely or with their friends and so on but still their their sort of role as as the agent that passed the virus from themselves to the adults meaning to the parents the grandparents and so on it's always a risk that i think it that we have to pay attention to because because this the young kid is like the trojan horse because what happened is that in fact there are there are reports now that in young children not only they have a milder condition but actually in contrast they have a higher viral load because when they look at the virus on the respiratory tract it's higher so they carry the the virus and if if they don't uh uh get treated and tested we don't know we assume that they don't have problem and and that assumption obviously just you know keep them even more at home and with the with the opportunity of having the the parents the grandparents and and uncles and aunts infected so it is something that we we have to bear in mind the potential you know a bigger problem when when kids go to school because we may uh get into the the sort of innocent complacency and and the misunderstanding saying well they're not they're fine and and we have no problem uh so that's something that we have to bear in mind i think carol said it earlier about another point that because the testing and is the date that that that is uh you know when when the when the individuals not all of them are sick but some of them uh you know already have symptoms so so when they get tested that we put the date there but in reality the exposure could have been a week before or even two weeks before because this is why the quarantine period is 14 days because they can be exposed quite a while back and not not showing up so sometimes you have to understand not just looking at the time that the when the peak comes because if you look at the recent um uh data from for example in the summer you know when when when young people go to the beach and and a party stay and so on so they did they spike i mean in florida and california and other places with nice beaches so the the the the need to understand that is also very important that that uh celebrations as dr beck mentioned is a potential it's something that we we need to to to pay attention to and and therefore coming back in the month of october we have halloween and uh and and also the uh columbus day so you have basically two celebrations and then you you know when it comes november even though as if it is quiet but then people um it's spending more time indoors so crowding in the house because most people don't wear the mask when they are in the house because they assume that they are fine and then comes december actually a lot more as you know a lot more than uh christmas you have the uh kwanzaa your hanukkah you have many other celebrations and that's and and that's the time when people get together in fact governor lamont said today is going to limit the number of people having celebrations in the house down to 10.

items as a consent list consent items are routine in nature and can be enacted in one motion without further discussion this procedure con conserves meeting time for a full discussion of significant issues consent items to be approved in one motion one through 28 so move second okay um all in favor i'm opposed i'm gonna pull constant items so you want to amend what you want to do is you want to amend the motion and you want to pull whatever your consent items are and then allow them to um vote for the consent with the ones that you pull so that we can have a discussion okay and we didn't know you have so we need to i'm going to pull the six uh the uh the items that i said no to for the consent you've already voted they were discussion information so we're only on the cons you've already voted yeah those are not consent they're already done they were discussion action okay now you have the consent agenda that is only other items that did not have any discussion you don't have any you don't have anything else yes i think that's a miscommunication so did we did we discuss the number six seven and eight the assistant superintendent you did yes you had a vote you you you had items will pull our table go through each one for any discussion there's none i moved that we uh approved items one through twenty-eight today i'll say oh okay okay that's fine all those in favor aye all right [Music] any opposed so we go to public comments we do not have any public comments at this time yeah [Music] um i wanted to touch base that we will have a presentation at the next board meeting regarding what i consider student voice prior to the pandemic i was at granite hills high school in the step class in miss wright's class and the high school students asked me why they were called the step class and i said because somebody named you far before i came here and i don't know what the history is but i will check into it what their concern was was right down the hall there was a class called success and they felt like the name meant that there was a possibility of success for those students and where steps seemed to have a negative connotation they wanted to rebrand their classroom but they knew that it would impact the rest of the district because we have step classes across the district we then met with pat schlosser and david wheeler and took down some information about ideas the students had in the end david then took mr wheeler took that to the other step teachers and so they will be rebranding the step program to achieve it's called achieve and mr schlosser will do the presentation next time um giving you what that stands for and we are so proud of these kids to have come up with us and mrs wright who have advocated to help them along the pathway so that's exciting um and then um obviously we've already talked about our tk and k um what we're calling our our soft start our soft opening um but the week prior to that two weeks prior to that we had um our mod severe students with exceptional needs return and i have wonderful emails and videos from teachers and para educators that were just so joyful to see those kids and we did have a kindergartener on tuesday on their or on monday on their first day um cry when they had to leave school at the end of the day and so for a first day um that was a new one to have somebody cry when they had to leave so um just we love that and um we're really proud of of the work that everybody has put into this our classified staff our certificated staff um everybody everybody has come together on this um the class of 2020 um we had had a request to talk about that um we will have a the survey is done it will go out to our families at the class of 2020.

is there any second and here in seconds she just beat you captain sorry uh discussion questions yeah um just to jump back here i i tried to jot down what you were saying on the general week and the step increase i missed year three general wage okay um so year three gwi was uh two one point five one point five gwa all right so so my take on this is year one the total increase step band general age 1.75 2.56 2.79 3.02 correct okay where they are so the the cost share or the medical culture yeah the medical co-chair 15 year one 15 16 17 where is it right now 14 14 14 right now so it's going up one percent a year for four years okay what is that so the cost the cost of that the cost of the teachers is that very generally speaking family different from a single person but is it a couple hundred bucks a year that one percent yeah yeah this is big messiah and i know people can't see me but i will adjust the question so the medical co-share going up from 14 to 15 basically if you look at the teachers as a group that's an increase of roughly 55 000 so our costs are offset because the teachers are paying it and that amounts to about 150 every teacher okay and again just using an average because as you say some teachers are in single coverage so yeah family so and that's roughly 55 000 per year cost shifting from the board to the teachers because it's going up um net increase if you were to take what we're saving on the health care or the the calculated increases 580 000 minus 55 000 so 525 863 in the subsequent year you could figure it's closer to 60 grand 860 early 800 000 you know 965 in the third year closer to 65 000 again because of the extra percent um 900 000 a little over a million um million seventy two thousand so you're probably closer this million on the nose in terms of projections jeff you mentioned earlier a top step for our 14 year folks what percentage of our teachers are impossible uh it's a significant percentage right now um it looks like we have 62 percent yeah 66 um one 83 on the other 87 on the third so yeah it's in the first contract here 62 percent of our teachers are a top step by the time you get to the fourth you're assuming no turnover which isn't realistic 72 will be a top step so if you um one way to look at the general wage increase is that 62 of the teachers are top step their total increase over the four years is the six point two three percent so they're getting a little over one point five percent per year and certainly i think there's difficult financial times um that's pretty reasonable in terms of an agreement that we were able to reach with the teachers is there anything built into this that's like uh we're hopeful there might be some cost savings like you know getting people off of uh name brand drugs and over to prescription uh generic drugs type of thing just in general that you're hoping for well we're always looking at you know how we can improve the overall cost of medical benefits one you know certainly one thing that the teachers have agreed to is to take a larger portion of the co-share but then you know the things that we do really not only year in and year out but month in and month out we do look at what the costs are we do look to try to save money on prescription drugs and try to get increased rebates that was one of the advantages when we went to see them we saw a substantial increase in the prescription rebates we would get from cigna as compared to anthem but the other important component is we're really stressing wellness and programs to improve employee health so that over time the claims that we see you know aren't as high as they would be without without those wellness programs and the wellness programs not unusual in the industry right now do focus around diabetes management you know heart and hypertension you know those are key focus areas because if you treat those diseases early or even prevent those diseases it saves a lot of money in claims over the long term and one of the other things that we did when we switched to signal last year is there is a health coach that's employed by cigna that works in the uh in town here and we share our benefits with town so there's a health coach that's here three days a week and is doing all kinds of programs to try and get our employees to engage as part of the health and wellness program always looking at it tim i mean medical costs are certainly something that is a large portion of our budget you know everything that we can't manage it besides just trying to show the cost of teachers not the staff so i know catherine had a question wasn't so much a question i just wanted to um you know i was a member of the negotiating committee uh along with uh tony and adam and the teachers i just wanted to um make a point that the teachers approached the negotiations in a in a very professional and good faith manner and there was never um any rigidity really on their part and i think they made it easier for us to be able to reach an agreement with them that was you know financially um responsible on our side but also provided you know the support that they deserve really i mean i am a huge fan of our teachers as i think we all are and um it was important to me that they understood that we value them and we can't do everything that i think we would like to be able to do for our teachers you know we just can't afford that it's not a blank check sort of situation but um it was they what am i trying to say it could have been a very difficult process to go through because of the fiscal realities that we're dealing with and they were um really i just think that they did a very nice job on their side as we did on our side so i'm very supportive of this contract i think it is as we would say fiscally responsible however it also shows the teachers that we do value them and the great phenomenal work that they're that they do so that was what i wanted to say thanks yes uh thank you mr chairman um firstly i'd like to thank you for appointing me to the negotiating committee this is my first time on the team are you sure you're still thankful an incredibly enlightening experience um i want to thank the administration and also the uh the the teachers negotiating team as captain said um i think that the teacher's side came in with an open mind and we tried to go in with an open mind i mean i know for me personally as as everyone knows i think you know my goal was to really try to flatten the cost curve to come out the reasonable agreement and um i think that we were able to do that i think this is a fair agreement um where we where we couldn't perhaps compensate financially for the teachers we were able to to um improve their their quality of life and their quality of work environment uh and i think the teachers recognize that i think maybe we weren't sure if the the teachers would ratify this because it was you know in my opinion a fair agreement i wasn't sure what was going to happen but i'm happy to see that they ratified it i know that i'll be supporting this uh tonight and i'd like to just thank everyone hopefully the town council will feel the same way but we'll see yeah uh yeah i just want to add on the catheter now so just a little uh background uh you know as much as we want to have a whole board in negotiations you know we try to live a number of folks on both sides so it was myself katherine adam uh we also had sandy pavano uh from the town council since she's our liaison for the town council who said it and i tried to do the meetings and expert catherine ann said um yeah for me and i've been through a few negotiations as some of us have and you know they're always you know somewhat difficult the early ones i think 10 years ago were a little more uh stubborn on both sides you know there's some things that work through i will say again it's not taking away from anybody everyone always approaches this in a professional manner there's really no drama and i think what kathryn asked that is uh john redford i think uh did a great job and represented membership the teachers that were in there with us and we sat you know in a large room library high school you know in a big u-shape and we're able to have dialogue you know it was uh it was a fresh change where you can help the exchange our points and ideas and have a discussion you know have some cookies when they were available uh yeah we didn't we did not get to the agreement before the mediation thing uh so we did go to mediation on a friday night no less um and we got out of there shortly after 11 o'clock i believe uh but even that was you know as expected we all heard each other so um so i do want to thank um you know the board the board members also get a lot of input going to the negotiations uh you know it's we're all constantly aware our economic realities uh especially going next year i think the 1.75 percent year one is very reasonable i will tell you we tried for zero you know trying to keep things but you know that was just not going to happen especially with other settlements going on around the state so that being said um this settlement again i haven't seen any recent sentiment data i know because we're in a four-year uh contract term most towns well not most but large part about three years yeah i think this settlement in totality is slightly maybe lower um we look at the percentages and i know folks saying well jesus why are you guys short-chaining teachers well we're not you know these these percentages are very fair and the echo adam said is that we're trying to improve the quality of life too especially during this covert time so one of the key things for me in this contract above all else uh has been the change from six courses to five at high school we've been trying to do that uh as a board for a few years now uh with enrollment kind of setting off and the fact that teachers need more time prep time student time we felt this was the contract to do it and we worked out a way to do this over the course of three years so it should be a hopefully a smooth change and i think the benefit will be seen both by teaching students and more time for one-on-one so that being said i will support this i do want to thank the the membership for ratifying the contract have an open mind and i hope you don't realize that you know we're always trying to keep the largest um asset i mean he's been the entire school district our asset but you know if it's not for our educators you know none of this would work uh our students wouldn't be where they are in support so we try to always keep that in mind especially with the fiscal reality so uh i think this is fair i hope uh the commander town council sees it we'll see the same so again i just want to say thank you uh and also for the work on the patience of this process because it was a couple of months um thanks tony you have mentioned before that all that you've mentioned other settlements around the state so i'm really thinking about you know parents or voters at home who are watching who may not be aware of the process the other settlements around the state that is because if this doesn't get passed by the board or adopted approved by the board approved by the council we end up going to arbitration binding arbitration and ultimately what happens basically by law is that the arbitrators will look at those other settlements around the state so it is entirely relevant to the vote we cast here tonight yes okay yeah and quite frank but and then when it goes arbitration forget about what was just agreed to you start over right uh you both go in with your best offers and a lot of factors are taking consideration um so but yeah that's a good point thanks for watching people understand the process infiltration is incredibly expensive too and so we'd rather invest that in our educators than just pay attorneys to argue over things and you know there are things that are compromises in this deal on both sides but it would probably hurt more to have it forced upon us and it cost everybody more money so we're in a great place and just the one last thing and i know i said this only a couple weeks ago with the administrator's contract but could you give some context you have 400 teachers 600 or 700 employees one two unions five unions this is one we have several yeah five six five five unions this is this is the one the single biggest one without 400 teachers out of your six or seven hundred employees okay correct okay all right any other comments questions from board members seeing as there are none and thank you for everyone here and watching your family's watching for sticking through this we're almost there so the motion on the table is move that the cheshire board education approves the clinton bargaining agreement with the education association of cheshire for the period of july 1st 2021 through june 30th 2025.

now i don't know how compliant that is that people actually can police that and and and you know to make sure that there's not a crowd there and and again when they are in the house they don't wear a mask especially during celebration the excuse is that you know if they hold a glass of wine they're not going to wear a mask they want to drink you know take a sip from time to time so it is it's a reality so having the distance learning now until the end of the year i think it's the right thing to do so so let me just thank everybody before i just want to make this comment so that friday i think what was it 23rd this is this is the predictive um strategic information we saw coming down the pike and that's that's what forced us into making that last minute decision because we erred on the side of safety thinking the numbers were going to do exactly what um what we had information and data said that it might just do so that's why we get the pause that's and that's where the trend is and um i think what uh for tonight you could hear i heard about what goes into your decision making well how this goes into a decision making the disaggregation of the data by age um all of those things are very important to reform the same decisions that we make you could see where we're at we're at the zenith of numbers um safety is so i promised everybody last spring when this thing happened that our decision is not going to ego it's going to be on the safety of our our youngsters and our teachers uh as you know you're reading emails that you're getting from folks um but what i what i encourage you to do is to listen to our professionals understand the dynamics of of how this can impact our youngsters and understand that as i check around i was asked have you been checking around i have and you know there are kids there are there are school districts that are in sessions they're dismissing classes they're doing contract tracing you know it's pretty episodic but they are going on um you know this allows for more continuity even though it's very difficult on our youngsters and as as tonight we'll indicate from our professionals um this is nothing to mess around with this is a danger and i think we're we need to be mindful of that so i'm going to keep quiet now let the board i'm sure they have many questions so thank you may i just add one more point and that is we have to to remember that every year we have the seasonal influencer and i don't know how well the vaccination rate rate is against influencer the the speculation going to be i guess in the last few months we focus in politics there's hardly anything talk about the the influenza vaccine and that is going to be not only for those who have the covet infection if they also have the flu infection that their clinical sort of progress or outcome it's going to be compromised in in it you know to a certain degree so it is important to remember that and then the the peak i actually just take a look at the um well it's a connecticut data but it's coming from cdc in the last few years in the last three years the uh the peak of the seasonal fluids in february basically the end of january and the end and the beginning of march that's the peak season and uh the last three years they followed that the the reason i bring up the the three years because as you know the weather continues to change and the seasonal flu certainly have something to do with the weather or the season so that is another thing we have to remember that even now because as i understand it there is a increase in the anti-vaccine movement or ideas or philosophy or thinking so i i just want to you know to this group that is important number one yourself should get the flu vaccine and not only that look after your loved ones and then your neighbors and so on because the flu vaccine the annual rate is not that impressive i mean it's not that high people have all sorts of reasons not to get the flu vaccine thank you doctor welcome dr sale i have a question for dr flunk go ahead al just go right through glass go ahead mr russo stop on good thank you uh dr fong i heard from a private source that getting the flu shot diminishes one's uh immunity or what makes you more susceptible to getting covet is there any truth to that i don't think so i think and think for people that with the any vaccination especially viral virus vaccination during the the time when they receive the vaccine for a week or two maybe they or during the the active infection they may have the immunolog the immune system suppressed that is a well-documented sort of a a period of time when they have the viral infection especially herpes infections and some of the infections you know is well described so this is another reason get your flu vaccine early don't wait till you know january don't wait till december because they because you're a musician yeah so get it early yeah i'll go back with a quick comment about vaccines and how it may affect uh coleman some of the data out of um the far east um may suggest that if you have your mmr vaccine you know what your pediatric vaccination actually may help it may serve some protective effects so the only data that's out there actually may suggest that it helps doesn't hurt um relative to cova so thank you sir gentlemen thank you the board members have any questions it looks like rachel does yes um with our numbers being what they are right now i believe we had 56 new cases today 30 something yesterday and again 50 something on tuesday how effective is contact tracing i think contact tracing is is an excellent idea the only problem for for do for that is is the the the way it is processed because at this point now um the the testing takes about at least 24 hours maybe 30 maybe even more so there's a time lost in the in the uh ability to do to do it early because the the earlier you do the best the better it is because not only preventing a wider spread of people being infected and and it also permits those who have been contacted that you know that that they can go gold into quarantine and so on so that is the major impediment i think in terms of the the uh testing times that we have to wait for that long and the other thing is that for the for the test for the uh for the test itself also the number of viral particles and so on i think it it goes up with with with the infectious process at the beginning but in the beginning can be very can be quite low so people that get tested early uh sometimes can be negative and in turn positive because the test doesn't lie basically tells you you know you you have the virus so you don't have the virus so it it is it is a a not not a 100 perfect test and then in terms of the tracing also depending how you know how well the the ability to do that i think if people these days carry their cell phone um i i guess with the cell phone if it is turned on they they know where you are but those that don't do that then you know you you and and that is almost like more likely to be a senior person because in terms of uh computer literacy it's not you know basically drops of age meaning the the older population i you know my understanding is probably at least 10 20 don't use computer so it's not not you know you don't you're not able to chase them that well you you contact them and get them you know tested and so on and yet those are the people that has one risk factor because of age being vulnerable to the infection yeah and uh dr fulham well you were spot on um one of the challenges that we faced in the medical community when we were doing contract tracing as the numbers got higher it was just the sheer number of people to trace it just got tougher um and so you know when you have lower numbers it's actually a little bit easier but you know if you have like so many positive people it's just it's just kind of tougher to do the contact tracing too so um and it's just another thing to consider i just want to add to that so we do have um we do have the ability to scale up and we have state volunteers to handle if we need to do additional contact racing i will say that as community transmission goes up it is more difficult to do contact racing for those reasons and additionally because people aren't sure where they where they got it um that's why we are doing some of these things statewide like rolling back to phase one having things or i'm sorry phase 2.1 sorry not phase one phase 2.1 and issuing um a public health advisory saying to reduce the number of trips to outside of your home from the hours of 10 p.m to 5 a.m and those kinds of things and then limiting the number of people you know closing your circle um to the number of people that you are with so that way you can kind of identify where you could have possibly gotten it so i think that that's part of the reason why we put in those preventative measures so that way we can more effectively do contact tracing mad i'm sure i have a question when it's appropriate yes go ahead um this is for either of the doctors and i think dr begg i think you answered this question for me the last time we were all on a call like this but just to reinforce the data and the research and the information we've received in the last several months we're still very clear that this is not the flu this is much more dangerous than the flu i mean we're we're still at that point we still recognize that am i correct in that assumption uh there's absolutely no doubt as far as that goes the analogy that it's just a little bit more lethal the flu is just not representative uh the folks that actually end up dying from the flu it's it's much much it's in the area of like a tenth of a at best and those are the people that are truly um have a a lot of what we call comorbid problems they have a million other medical problems i i personally i've been in emergency medicine since 1989 um and i've never seen a healthy person die from the flu the only people i see die from the flu are those who have a million medical problems i have personally seen people younger than me die from covid and the the rate from cover death well it's lower because we're actually testing more people the fact remains that um in our country you know we we we're approaching 300 000 deaths you don't have nearly not even uh exponent you have exponentially more people that are younger and healthier that are uh affected uh either dying or or a serious side effect so that's a very uh insightful question thank you doctor we can't reinforce that enough joe let me let me add something something to it uh there's a very very nice paper com uh coming from uh boston children and the the researcher basically instead of just looking at the boston area they contacted the hospital surrounding bosnia or basically the northeast and they collected because they because that is a very nice paper in a sense because they can manage it the number because they only collected about 200 pediatric young pediatric patients with a coveted infection and and of those that about 50 60 percent get admitted to the house get admitted not just seen in the emergency room in the hospital but get admitted to the hospital and then those were analyzed and uh the the answer the the the uh of that study showed that uh 80 that means four out of five those children who were admitted to the hospital not not just boston children as they said it's a collection of the area and and four out of five that get admitted to the hospital they they usually are so so sick they need to be in in the intensive care unit and they all have co-morbid condition meaning they have an underlying significant medical problem like diabetes asthma maybe congenital heart disease that has been repaired basically they have a significant underlying problem only one in five or 20 percent have no pre pre comorbid condition so in a sense i think when when i think dr beck i i forgot i mean i didn't remember whether he actually mentioned it the senior population the problem why why the people who died from covert usually our senior age group is basically probably for for the similar reason because as as we age most most of the seniors we have increasingly more medical issues basically co-morbid condition and and uh so that that's one reason another reason is that in fact for the for the uh for the infection itself the viral particle is not a complete organism meaning by itself it cannot reproduce so it has to attach to a well a victim or the host and then enter a cell and hijack the the dnas and and the enzymes of of the uh of the whole cell and in doing so they can replicate and they when they replicate they did they kill the cell some of the cells died that's why those that's why the patients are very sick for that reason and if you remember that the the receptor for the virus is interesting that is not as common almost like an age related phenomena meaning the younger kids if they they for the younger you are the the study come coming you know on on that question is that the receptor for the virus it's almost like age dependent very nice because every 10 years they have a sort of a group and they look at it every step of the way they increase so that explains why the seniors are also more more more sick because when when the viral particle enters their body they can they can all get into the cells and destroy the cells and also explains why what i said earlier the young kids they are they are basically behaving like a trojan horse because they don't have their or they have very little receptor so they can have a far higher number of viral parts they can attach more viral particles there but they can't get into themselves so that's the reason cara for the board i know you talked to your colleagues and kathy you know what are you seeing with school-aged children around us where they're attending now and what kind of feedback you're getting from your colleagues regarding these school districts that have these youngsters in can you kind of give us some background on that i think it'd be nice for them to hear some of that either kathy or cara i'm going to defer to kathy on this first yeah sure um thank you cara yes i can speak to that um so surrounding districts yes they are in um on different models some are in full-time learning uh some are in full-time maybe k to five and hybrid in other models um but they are seeing cases every district um or seeing cases on some level and they are closing either classrooms or cohorts for 14 days it happened again just in ridgefield today they have had to close for 14 days someone at the high school has tested positive so i have not talked to a district that has not had cases where they've had to do intermittent closures on all levels elementary through high school has it impacted their ability to bring you know instruction didn't get anything from that instruction uh there have been times where districts have had to close because of teachers being on quarantine and they have not had enough staff to teach in person cara i know any feedback or either dr begs would you see from the area maybe from your perspective as well i'm seeing exactly what kathy is seeing you know where we talk all the time so we communicate about all these cases same thing with our non non-public schools with our contact racing the non-public schools in danbury are contact tracing their you know we're seeing cases every week in these schools where we're having to do closures of classrooms or grades or quarantine entire buses but we are seeing that yeah we have three non-publics in danbury right now that are on 14-day quarantines two for a grade level and one for a cohort thank you may i ask a question please yes go ahead okay thank you uh i'm just curious because i know we've talked about you know the indicators we're using to determine whether or not we need to shift models you know either to go in or out of a particular model and they're based on these 14 day averages and i'm just thinking about the last um you know plan that we had for reopening and how we kind of got to this point where we had three days in a row where we had you know larger numbers than we expected but it wasn't necessarily you know in that first day or two it wasn't impacting the average enough you know to to give us any kind of warning or heads up that was going to happen i can see how that average would make sense on the other end to say you know we've been clean for a two week period where we haven't had numbers exceeding you know the range that's comfortable but in terms of not running into another situation like we did before where we had you know a big jump on one day and started to anticipate that that number was going to go we didn't you know that wasn't going to impact the average so i guess what i'm wondering is how reliable is that indicator you know leading into a potential outbreak i think that's a really good question i'll start if anyone else wants to jump in but i think that that's why we have the primary indicators and then the secondary indicators and there's that one about rate of change and we there was a couple other factors that went into it so we saw a dramatic increase in our number of cases and it happened quickly and and it happened three days in a row so we had we had times where we saw one one day where we saw a big jump and then the next day we went right back down again this was three consistent days of seeing a big jump and the rate of that was very quick um so we saw that speed additionally we then were seeing that across the whole state the numbers were increasing where last time it was just danbury so that also factored in a little bit but um anyone else please feel free to jump in yeah cara cara thank you for that clarification um kate and in the secondary indicators that uh cara is referring to and it's it's on this it's on the second half of addendum four um and there are two areas one it's called direction of change and then the other one is called speed of change and in our case when we were you know sitting together that friday and you know in one moment we thought we were opening schools on monday and then we're reviewing the latest data um uh with cap our ponzi who's with us right now and and it's exactly that case um we had a significant um uptick in cases over those last couple of days um that suggested that we were going to have um you know this higher rate that that was going to contribute to a higher rate in the 14-day average uh you know which we did end up seeing um and so and so when we're making these decisions you know it's it's initially you know the leading indicator which is the 14-day average but those secondary indicators and in our case you know looking at that data that was in front of us in the last three days leading up to that friday um you know ended up playing a role in our decision not to open on monday the 26th it's it's interesting to look at the data the care put out um because uh some of the hospital data um is somewhat similar but it's it's got another 10 day lag so when when we looked at the data earlier this year you know we saw the numbers going up um in the community but we didn't have a lot of hospitalizations and then uh like 10 days you could just superimpose the graphs like 10 days later we started to have the spike in the hospitals and then actually there was one day we we actually went from only one person on a respirator to six people on a respirator like in 24 hours so um you know my concerns like selfishly on behalf of uh the sickest of our population is that we see the spike go today you know two weeks from now or more that's when we see all the hospitalizations of the worst enough people on the respirators thank you so the doctor bags and and everyone you know the the you heard dr fong this is a conversation we've had regarding when we spoke you know a few weeks ago when we were going to return that we would have to be mindful of one the flu and secondly what the holidays and even at that time predictively you had said to us be cautious uh be mindful and and inject the data because you really felt as though we would be in a in a situation where we may have to step back so this is a conversation we had back then which has come to force right now i'm just curious from the board in terms of that i know where cara is and kathy and in terms of uh safety returning um your reaction to dr fong's um recommendation and the rest just so we could hear it this is the purpose of tonight too thank you gladys thank you uh mr december um first i'll reiterate what i said the last meeting the time while the timing was unfortunate to pull back that late on that friday night i think it's pretty indisputable that we made the right decision that going back at that point would have been bordering on reckless especially in light of where these numbers have gone um i i think it would be cavalier on our part to disregard the advice of doctors fong and bag we have medical advisors for a reason and none of us are doctors and they are um it doesn't sound to me and either of the good doctors or cara can correct me but it doesn't sound to me like we're anticipating these numbers getting significantly better significantly fast the trajectory in the state clearly doesn't look great the trajectory in the world and nationally nationally isn't great i think the thing we have to do is obviously be safe secondary to that i think we owe it to our families to give them as much notice as much consistency and while it is hard to be on distance learning knowing they're going to be on it i think is important and and having some concrete ideas that what we're doing and how we're planning it makes sense and if the doctors are recommending that we avoid going back until after the holidays that makes a certain semblance of sense especially in light of the trajectory of our numbers and the likelihood that people are not going to distance over the next six weeks or eight weeks or ten weeks because clearly far too many people aren't doing it now we have far too many restaurants far too busy many that clearly need to have some enforcement action taken because they're blowing through their restrictions um but i i think there's we would be remiss if we ignored the advice of our medical professionals and advisors that's why we have them thank you madam chief thank you joe for the comments thank you and i i feel right now if no one uh has any other questions uh for dr phone carol or kathy or uh the other doctor that's on the line madam chair al russo yes yes ma'am i just like like to echo uh joe da silva with uh the latest input from dr fong and dr begg that yes uh i am also on board and with the idea of uh holding off uh doing any sort of hybrid plan until after the holidays are when the numbers get better uh they have certainly enlightened us with uh with their wisdom and their knowledge and uh it's again it's indisputable the kids should stay out of school thank you no thank you al i was leaving i have a question it's katherine um so i'd like to know the protocol if people do get covid and what our protocol is like bringing them back because there it hasn't been proven that people can get it twice is that correct and then you mean if we identify cases yes so what happens is i understand that there's a 14-day quarantine but is it for the person that's positive or is it for everybody that's been in contact or is it is there different levels kathy uh yeah would you honor that yes thank you dr sal i can speak to that so if a positive uh if we have a positive case um what we do is we go back 48 hours and i identify who was in direct contact with that person direct contact meaning for 15 minutes or more within six feet of distance so once those individuals are identified those direct contacts do need to quarantine for 14 days and they need to have a cova test and within that 14 days even if the kova test is negative they still must remain in quarantine because the incubation period for covid is 2 to 14 days so once that 14 day period has expired their quarantine is up and they would be able to come back when we have a positive individual that quarantine is 10 days and that's either from the if they have no symptoms it would be starting the date that they go for their test um or symptomatic the day they start symptoms and the reason for the 10 versus the 14 um the evidence has shown us that after 10 days a positive person although they may still test positive they're not considered contagious to shed the virus did you just briefly talk about the contact of the contact so um for example if someone's identified as a direct contact um and they are sent home and they're required to test siblings or other family members can still go about their daily activities they are considered secondary or a contact of a contact and they would not need to quarantine unless the other individual in the house tested positive thank you thank you thank you okay just a just a comment madam chair i don't know if this is you know appropriate at this time but i mean i'm just heartbroken that we're we're considering you know this long of a time frame for not reassessing um the situation the numbers you know i'm heartbroken for our kids that have been you know essentially in isolation for nine months i mean that's not healthy either so you know i'm i'm kind of venting my frustration a little bit you know i know this isn't an easy decision um but you know i look at the other towns um brookfield's going back on monday and they're also in the reds my understanding um there's an urgency at the state level to get kids back in school because that is irreplaceable um and and is this would this even fly with the state to go this long with um with you know just saying we're not gonna go back until january february where whenever you know it would this be acceptable um what they've kind of decentralized their decision making and are permitting individual towns to make those decisions rachel um their preferences i i believe is is to have students in school um if there's mitigating circumstances then uh it becomes an individual town's decision you take new haven for example um they voted to go on dl and they didn't even have the issues that we had they've just continued that indefinitely we have been on in in other other places have as well so um i think the answer that is we would notify them and um but it is an integral individual town uh district decision to do that um i think your comments regarding the time away and all of that is is very deep and and and something that uh is always in front of us and that's the net uh and that's that's the challenge that we have you know how do we bring them back in a way that we feel is safe in in light of what the professionals are telling us um we we've we've been on the side of of of uh safety um not that they're that social emotional is an issue it certainly is as far as a decision it becomes an individual town decision unless of course there is rumors about a lot of things where um the governor is looking at some things about thanksgiving and stuff but to date every decision that's made has been local i'm just not ready to throw in the towel yet i want to keep reassessing and looking and not just definitively say we're not going to go back until you know january that's a long time mr ginelli um i think for the administration it's important maybe that they hear from us as a group dick we can't hear you if you don't mind at least i can't i'm sorry if i could fix this thing here is it any better now i can't hear you mr um just hold on is that any better well hopefully you can hear me now i think it's important that the administration hear from the board as a whole as to i don't want to say a vote but maybe just the a's and nays so that they understand that we support them or or we have different feelings not that we're in the position to have any authority in this particular situation um i respect rachel's position however i think uh kelly could speak to the chaos that ridgefield is going through and has gone through because they've elected to to go through a five-day situation where everybody's in school but i i think as a board at least if i were on the administration i'd like to know what the board's feeling is in terms of holding up going back until you know in january and that being said if that is the decision that the administration takes i also think during this particular time that we put our other resources into some of the deficiencies we have in the uh distance learning to see if we can sure those up and then come january try to come up with another solution just not go back to the hybrid situation but maybe there were different solutions to to consider at that particular point again with safety being the number one factor and seeing where the numbers are so in essence i just think a vote of confidence if i were on the administration just by the yeas and maids i think that would be comforting at least i feel it is to the administration and if if you want to take a vote such as that uh no uh mr ginelli uh could i speak can everyone hear me yes okay uh this was about this tonight was to have a time for us at board members to express our concerns and we are not here to say that this is what we're going to do or the administration is going to do we want to hear the professionals as to how they have expressed their concerns about the numbers and then we as a board have overall discussion about it and i can you know identify with rachel i don't know if anyone is ready to throw in the towels but you know i think the medical people that are here and the numbers from city hall and the numbers that we are seeing telling us a different story and i think that we can all voice our opinion and share it and that would then it would be left up to administration to come up with what they feel and i think the discussion was if i'm not mistaken since we have the thanksgiving holidays coming up how many days the kids are going to be in school since we have after that we have uh i think next week we have a day or which is veterans day then thanksgiving is coming up then two weeks in between that is christmas and you know january seems like a long time away but it's not so i think we need to as a boy have the overall discussion and i don't want to get into saying we're going to vote on this just have overall discussion so we can sort of uh vent our views and administration can see how we feel as a board and then whatever the decision is there would be uh a communication between the board and the administration in accepting their recommendation can i thank you board members would like to voice their opinions i will along that line when you're thinking about it when you make an account i think two things please parents i mean what happened that friday was awful but you know i'll make it again on safety i'm sorry but to be able to communicate and so they can plan is so important i think somebody mentioned that before so whatever we think through that is right in front of us how can we communicate in a meaningful way so parents complain appropriately the other thing i want to put on the table is that if we decide to go back next date whether it's after christmas after thanksgiving we can't not go back we have to figure out in in that proposition that the executive order has you can return with different mitigating circumstances unless we're ordered to by the by the governor or someone i don't think you know us episodically saying we can't come back because it's got to be something that we feel solid about when we do come back you know it's so important yes if something really extending extenuating happens of course but uh we cannot you know one we have to be able to communicate and if we come up with some kind of a timeline we need to know how we can implement it and i've said this before everybody back doesn't have to happen it could be phased it could be more distance there's a number of things but just keep that in mind when you're thinking through this for our parents and kids because i know at the heart of everybody you want to do the right thing so that's helpful to us thank you gladys amy had her hand up before okay amy i really appreciate the professional opinions that we have on the on the call tonight the doctors and kara and kathy and you've been so diligent and you know in in all ways and really appreciate it but i just feel like we're missing a part and i'm sure that dr sal you and and the cabinet and the administrators are well aware and just like rachel said i mean i'm really concerned about the isolation and the social emotional and um and i have talked to a couple of teachers of you know younger grades and how um it's kind of seems as though they're getting into a groove now with distance learning and they feel that they're connecting with their students like four days a week and um you know seem to have some concerns about going to hybrid because then they would possibly be changing who's the class mix is and all the different challenges of that but i guess i'm just it just doesn't sit right with me that we're gonna we're gonna call it now and say you know i know we're not calling it now but we're gonna wait and not have children back in school i mean we're about kids right i mean safety yeah i get it but i i don't know i just don't it just doesn't sit right with me that we're just gonna throw in the towel and i know we're not throwing in the towel but it just seems like we're so focused on just the numbers and the medical part of it but what about the social emotional part how how how important is that for our children wow it's it's it's it's thank you for that comment it's extremely important and as i said a few minutes ago that is a challenge that we have um you know we the continuity of instruction for kids it's four days a week maybe not the best but it's there the hybrid does um put a pause to that because you have over 70 folks that we have to do accommodations we cannot staff it any other way i mean that's just an operational thing um you know that's just a fact you just as dr said before there are faculty and staff that have mitigating circumstances can't come back um so you know we're kind of this is a model to bring it back um we could improve it down the road but we haven't even started it i think amy you know i you know this is why i was so pleased that we were meeting tonight so we could hear this you know all i'm saying is that if we sit down and we look at all this i can't see it in my heart of hearts the danger of putting my own grandkids in and my own grandkids have been in they've been quarantined i've been through this i know what it what it does to them um it's very hard for a lot of reasons but we got to look at that and if we decide on the next date well i want everybody to hear that we're gonna have to come back we're gonna have to figure out how to come back because of disappointment and the numbers that you see by these professionals here scare me um the emotional part scares me as well i don't have an easy answer for that but i do know you know this too weak stuff it's kind of hard on families that is very hard and the doctors mentioned to me about a month ago look you know we might gabe will go back but you have to be mindful of the holidays just as the colleges have been you know i mean it's the worst time to be doing this uh but uh it's it's a big problem um i mean a very very deep problem right let me try try to answer the the concern expressed by you know from amy and and rachel uh as a retired pediatrician i absolutely agree that social connectedness is extremely important and at my stage i can tell you the you know the pediatricians who stop seeing clinical patients i arrange them that we have lunch every two months for the last 10 every two months so basically six times a year and so social connectedness in in the senior group and the student age and the younger one are very important and and you know certainly what we're doing i i i think it's a balance not just between going to school and versus distance learning because a hybrid model has both so uh the point is that there's always a portion that they are not going to see the classmates in in person my suggestion is that maybe the parents you see if you look at the parents their their you know feeling or their ability to cope with both the the types of education maybe that's the area that we have neglected in the sense that for example uh because i'm basically in a house arrest myself and i understand how important social connectedness is important so what i what i have done is that i subscribe to i upgrade my uh my zoom uh subscription so actually i have been organizing my retired pediatrician we have been meeting every month i mean just like the meeting tonight we have here so the parents the the parents of children who are kept at home they they have you know if they can manage to do things that to bring back social connectedness whether it's virtual or re or real uh you know we maybe they need some help but certainly i i have no no problem and no question that what we do is not uh the best way but if you look at the downside the potential downside i think if we bring the kids back to school and then a week later we tell them that well now we'll have the closer school you have to stay home and if we keep on wavering i think that you will drive the parents crazy and that is also not a good alternative so besides you know using zoom or google meets and you know different programs for the children that they can connect with the classmates their friends and so on in addition i think i think the the fact that they're home when they are not on the computer uh learning from school doesn't mean that they cannot see the friends as long as they have the mask they keep the distance so i think parents what what they need in fact is for us to enlighten them to say hey you can do this and this this will have some activities for the kids because otherwise if we take school and house as being too sort of arrested area then i think we we missed the boat thank you thank you can anybody comment about let's say we were to make a let me just play a little scenario we're gonna wait three weeks or four weeks and then make a judgment um what would you have to see dr begs in order to when you're advising us or doctor that this is a time that we can re-enter what would you have to see i think that might be helpful to the board too in terms of feeling comfortable anybody want to comment you know cara punt they had to leave bill yeah so um one of the concerns i have is that if you look at the college experience most colleges um are ending their school season as a thanksgiving so the thing that makes even more complicated is that uh between thanksgiving and um and christmas or hanukkah and kwanzaa and the uh holidays that you have now all the college kids home i actually would be more than happy to revisit the numbers with karapunti the department of public health on a weekly basis i have no trouble revisiting um i towards dr fong's comments though uh well we do want to revisit that we don't want to create an unrealistic expectation that they create false hope i i as a parent who had a child um this past spring that had uh distance learning and and um kids that were that did the um sports my heart actually breaks that that our kids can't be there i i i can't imagine missing um the school on behalf of your children and missing sports and all the activities but but uh unfortunately the reality is with the numbers getting higher and all the college kids coming home and such a short window between thanksgiving and the december holidays that um i don't mind revisiting but i don't want to create a false sense of hope thank you i also i just want to say just a minute about the staffing piece because i do think it's i think this discussion is primary obviously but one of the kind of tentacles of this to think about is we have an awful lot of staff members who are in that age group where they have young children that are going to school in neighboring districts and so as those districts start to close the impact that we're seeing also is on their being torn between having to find childcare for their own family students and coming to work the other factor that i think warren's thinking about in this discussion of how long for us is that right now don't forget we have everybody coming in and we have teachers coming in at least two days a week to teach so they're still kind of living in this double world um and really the motivation for that um those of you that were on the the team that negotiated that piece was for them to grow more comfortable with the hybrid model of having students in front of them and students at home if we're thinking about a long-term closure then kind of the rationale for that starts to fade away a little bit for us um and and you know the other factor that plays into that is as conditions worsen which is what i'm kind of hearing tonight that they all we also need to be mindful to assess conditions for our um colleagues that are coming into the workplace now without children um so those are just kind of the the so as i said some other tentacles that are not necessarily part of this conversation but are things that kind of have a will be impacted by the decisions we make thanks ken i'd like to just jump in if i can make a comment please um i i echo the concerns that rachel and amy are expressing and i'm also thinking about those students who you know for school that's their their safe place that's where they get the wellness checks that they need they get you know food they get security um you know a safe environment um so i i am troubled um at the thought of doing this but i think what i'm what i what i'm really struggling with here isn't necessarily what the administration is doing because i think they're acting in good faith on the the information we have in front of us about how to keep everybody safe to me i'm looking at this and and wondering you know this is this is a community-wide conversation and we're having it in this bubble of the school community because this is you know the word we're the body that oversees that and the administration oversees you know the operation of the schools but this is really a community conversation and what our priorities are and i'm a little concerned that we're being you know we're in this position of having to make a really tough choice uh about how to handle this because within our community you know they're the business there are businesses that are open and operating and people are going into those businesses and they're mingling with each other and um you know people are not taking it upon themselves to to stay home and stay quarantined i think if that was going on and we were having a larger community conversation about this and we were prioritizing opening the schools um you know this could be a very different conversation and i just feel like we're sort of um really kind of in a position where we're relying on people who are outside of the school community uh to make decisions and they're not making decisions that benefit us being able to reopen safely so you know i i think that's sort of the crux of what i'm what i think we're dealing with here is like we're we're going to have to make this tough decision because other people are not making the decisions that in their you know personal lives and that that impacts us and i don't think we have any we don't have any control over that so i just wanted to add that to the conversation thank you madam chair i have a question when it's appropriate i don't want to take anybody's time um i don't know whether this is i know cara got off i don't know if kevin or one of the doctors who had done the answer my or maybe cathy o'dowd my recollection i'm trying to recall from memory our last meeting at 39 cases per thousand hundred thousand we would have to be closed right now per state guidelines correct am i remembering that properly so so joe that the school metric and addendum 4 is a little different than the one that was initially released when we were first closed for schools so the way addendum 4 works is it's it continues the more cases you have addendum 4 recommends that there are less kids in school and and so you know really the way the addendum is set up it gives it provides some significant latitude for the districts for the board for the superintendent so it wasn't as clear clear-cut as you know anything over this you close schools um but but it was kind of like a sliding scale the more the the greater the number the less amount of kids you were to have in school and then of course as as we know at that time we were planning to go back full k-12 i'm remembering am i remembering correctly the a standard at 25 per 100 000 for for schools was kind of the target was in the red absolutely after that once we get number 25 uh that's in the red zone and last time we met uh as best we can remember i think we were in like the four or five range so we're there and now we're up in the uh well into the 30s uh and rising so we're and we're definitely in the red zone thank you right and now uh we're all using the state data that was a part of the problem we had two sets of data we've been through that so um but the 25 is that or or less than 20 more than more than 20 puts us in the red zone but but as kevin just said um the state's permitting districts to mitigate it by increasing distancing and making other accommodations are those things that we're thinking about at some point in the future other other models than two on two off yes we've been yes joe we've been bringing so many different ways i mean you know play all different scenarios what if middle school doesn't come in what if high school doesn't uh do we have more space if we have more space can we open up can the kids come more often i think these are the things that we're looking at you know how um yes we also have other other devices that we have um that we're going to be able to utilize particularly at one level which uh you we could phase in and you could you could have k3 then we looked at a different model from middle and high school so there's different variations and that's what this um addendum for permits us to do thank you dr sale yes if uh we close and then open on the 26th and we were in the red and we're looking forward to open just i'm just using this as a scenario you mean two weeks ago 26.

some have already told us they have no interest in doing a ceremony but several do have an interest so our goal is to get a timeline if their kids are in college we know that there's going to be a window of opportunity right now with our county and our area still being purple we aren't permitted to have large group gatherings however once we have the number of students and the data then we will come back with a plan for you that will take into consideration a smaller intimate gathering for families to have that experience of walking across the stage and having their moment and pictures okay so we will be bringing that forward once we have it and i guess the last thing is the human spirit i know our um opening is not ideal and there continues to be limitations regarding opening beyond our current plan but each first day is filled with hope about our system and every like i said earlier every member has come together your support is a board um the union's coming together and negotiating with with dustin and the team um matt's department getting the supplies out and the ppes and all of the things i just i'm amazed every time i turn around and see um how well it is working in our slow startup so we will continue to keep you updated thank you thank you mr sir i don't have any more comments [Music] i i do have a comment um there was something on the board packet that i missed in our conversation it's about a gift that we received from staples it's a gift we receive from staples and sometimes when we receive these gifts we just put it as a board information but we don't openly thank them and i'm taking this opportunity to openly thank them uh for for that gift um that we saw on our in our package um [Music] we do send a letter on behalf of the school district so they do receive something in writing as well so but it is nice to go back and here they will know that the board actually saw that i get thank you so much mr staples um donna well um i'm not really sure i think this is my last meeting you have one more one we'll just slow that motorhome down you're here on december 10th donna december 10.
