Alles or what are they looking to to to do in in 2021 um on top of what we currently have so it it's more of a a brief update and and giving you some food for thought where there may be some suggestions from the superintendent as to what he'd like to to pursue next year so uh with that you know I'll give it to Courtney it's not going to be an elaborate detailed spreadsheet thing I think it' be more conversational um so we'll keep it short knowing it's a holiday week uh and uh and with that I'll get turn it over to Courtney thank you so much Rich okay and I I'll share just a high Lev spreadsheet and I'll send it around afterwards but just to get the the picture the that we be developing after after the holidays and so first I just wanted to wish everybody really happy holidays season and getting ready you know but I I appreciate your being here tonight um um to walk through where we are so far I'm going to share my screen I apologize it's just taking me a moment and so basically what you're seeing is just this is how we would normally show it to you in the past this is just a this is a preliminary look at the base budget so it's taking the budget for salaries and just increasing it by um a a standard percentage amount to account for contractual increases that have that um could potentially be incurred as we develop the budget for next year um so this is kind of like a high level scenario if everything were to happen you know and and basically there's some details behind it so in the parttime we break things up into series of categories so there's fulltime salaries and then we look at our part-time salaries and custodial overtime or lump together and we're looking at a pretty big increase there um so two of the things that are happening in that category is there's contractual rate increase is the subs and I'm going to get to this and it's a little bit confusing but I'll I'll I'll be very clear about it and we can talk about it as we go on but because we shifted a little an amount of the sub money into the um uh the alliance um Grant carryover we've got to shift it back and there's also a budget adjustment this what is Right sizing the budget because sometimes we in the past we would um pay for certain things in this code um part of the spend down at the end of the year but as I talked about it last year I'm I'm attempting to rightsize the budget with our actual expenditures so um you know putting it properly in its place so that we can look at the budget in totality um and then you get to the employee benefits category and it's about 1.35 this is just assuming our standard increase of 3% in social security security and 4.8% in dental health and life insurance and then a 3% on the workers comp and and you just go down the categories and it's it's what's historically happened as a trajectory in our spending with the exception of for example the transportation um I'm restoring the onetime credit that we got for transportation this year related to the covid shutdown so I'm reflecting the contract increase and a restoration next year of that credit and then just standard on the utilities and supplies but also restoring the instructional supplies and the end result is if we continued everything forward in sort of a conservative estimate where we haven't peeled it back and refined it yet we're looking at a 5.27% increase to the budget the budget asked would be 7.6 and why is that um that's partly because some of the things that we did last year if you'll recall we funded again with some onetime monies that we had as a result of the carryover um and the cares funding and we told the city at the time that if you'll remember this schedule um we would have an a base need to fund this year's priorities next year of a million dollars even after we shift some of the things that we're doing to Alliance so hi Dr s so I'm gonna go back to make that a little bit more clear because this was a long time ago when we talked about this um I'm going to go to a summary of what we're talking about onetime versus ongoing so this year we got 2.3 million of car's funding we got 1.2 million of Alliance and other Grant carryover and we got another 1.3 of coronav virus Relief Fund funds some of those things that we bought were what we would consider one time desk Shields extra sanitizers PPE we're hoping the virus is gone next year or if it's not gone it's mitigated in a new way all the things we invested in stored us up for this year and built a little bit of Reserve stock for next year on the 110 things so um the signage you know the the floor you know decals and all those pieces there were some things that we bought and the grant kind of dictated this that I would be considering an ongoing cost so meaning Personnel you know basically or other things that we invested in technology that are going to still cost us something if we continue them next year so for example software that we invested in there's an ongoing maintenance cost and I'll just go into the detail a little bit on that and then you know feel free to ask me some questions this is just the basic picture overall you'll remember s talked about a $5.5 million investment here I'm just showing you 4.7 because I'm showing you what associated with this year we had another million dollars that we spent um last year um that we include in that total um but this is just this year and going forward total would be 4.7 again of that 2.7 is what I would be considered ongoing cost that we have to have as part of the conversation as we build out the budget for next year so what does that mean so I'm showing you the ongoing here this is just a summary of what went into our state grants so the K's act funding has about I'm going to sum it up 1.3 million of what we would call in its ongoing cost you can see that up here also and what did we buy that we need to decide if we're going to continue to fund next year student support Specialists um counselors some health insurance for those and then a whole lot of digital items including Ras kids leveled ebooks um um you know adaptive independent practice for um literacy and numeracy ISL um as well as G Suite when your licens is for it's the Google Suite to use the classroom and um staff laptop tops at the high school we did purchase um some staff laptops I know the the high school students all got the grant gifted to them um this year um to also support additional laptops and then curriculum courseware called Edgenuity so these are all things that will total 1.3 million um that we would have to continue to fund next year because they have an ongoing cost or discontinue which would mean you know a layoff or discontinuing a license which we're not thaning so in the alliance carryover we had social workers some teaching salaries those subs that you saw in the other sheet and health insurance associated with these pieces in the coronavirus relief funds that only carries us through December 31st so you'll see a repeat of the student support specialist because this is just half of six and half FTE for the first six month salary just through December 31st you'll see the counselor again because it just supported us through December 31st and then car's act takes over after that and the Social Security and health insurance and other benefits related to those functions so that's 2.7 why is this okay but not okay you know um it it because we do have next year our anticipated increase which we've been getting every year for Alliance is about 2.7 million when we talked about the budget earlier we talked about not doing anything in cares that would cause us a hole meaning things that are also eligible for Alliance so they fit the bill for Alliance that we would be able to shift them into alliance if we had to we don't want to have to do that but if we had to it's a possibility I'm gonna pause there if there are questions so far so so hello everyone just just a two things to keep in mind and I'm I I want to get my arms around is any summer program program that we may need Courtney we need to figure out in terms of um you know filling the Gap things of that nature that we need to discuss the other thing is the new kazak money coming in which is kicking forward we don't know how that that's going to impact I'm sure I'll get more information this week in terms of any other funding yeah but but that's but that's the only other those are the only two variables at this point uh one would be an income the other would be an expenditure and we need to get close on you know summer school and how many students we think we may have to fund in that sort of thing yeah and so to Dr Sal Point Sal's point I would go back I'm sorry that was last year so our budget ask here is just the Board of Ed budget ask which is restoring some of those things to the budget that wouldn't be Alliance eligible and also I'm showing you on this schedule things that we would also have to either shift and to Alliance or find it you know get some more information on if they're going to extend and expand car's act funding for next year which we're hopeful that they will so all of that is to say you know the city's in the challenge challenge spot is going to be their you know um um take and in order for us to keep rolling forward our our current actions conservatively this could come down a little as we refine the numbers when I meet with all the independent um the directors with Dr s but conservatively it could we could be looking at a 5.3% increase just to do the carry forward given how we had yeah yeah Court the the we're saying of the $7 million increase 7.5 billion do increase and last year when we did the budget and you eluded to ad here we had mentioned that we would have a a shortfall of this year affecting this year of the the 1 million or $1.3 million of the 7.5 that one 1.3 million thereabouts is already Incorporated in that number is that correct that's correct yeah you know one rle of thumb to kind of think of just to be Broad and it's we don't want to be broad but I just want to say this is that if we looked at our budget from 1920 and we applied a 6% increase which would be relatively standard not the time of covid but if you appli to 3% 3% which reflects kind of like your contractual bargaining increases and what what happens you know annually in terms of the growth of costs it would have been about 8.2 million so in other words if you look at this um it would be about 8.2 million if you looked at like 3% and then another 3% but why are we looking at a less increase if you look at it over two years it's it's partially because we were able to Max maximize some of the other Grant sources because of some of the things that we were doing that had eligibility there um that said we do still need about 7.5 million to kind of to carry forward what we are doing on the base right yeah with that again I look at two parts one I look at the cost part two to analyze the cost and go through them and then always a concern is the the revenue Source historically it's always been the funding from the city last year an exception because we had different components do you have any feel for the 2021 year as to the revenue stream will it have any components or will it be similar to last year I guess my first question would be oh if there are any fund balances left from 2020 uh would we be eligible for a rollover uh one and two would there be any monies in car's money or any other monies from the gut federal or state that would help us out so they don't like to use the fund balance for operational um costs but that said we have had a relationship with the city that goes back many years with Dr s the mayor and the finance director as well as Joe that allowed us to put that fund balance in reserve for one-time um emergencies including health insurance Reserve which specially and yeah and so this year we got permission to set aside new reserves so we've gotten permission to set aside a reserve for special education for um a general building and building needs that are not ongoing maintenance that are improvements um health insurance and for information technology one-time projects because we did have you know a year where we did have fun balance related to co and some insurance savings basically now the city has that relationship with us that they would enable us to do that if that were the case again this year but it wouldn't Provide support for salaries or busing or things that are ongoing operational costs because then you'd be digging yourself a whole so really that's a reserve that's set up does it help us yes it does because it helps us to more appropriately budget for the health insurance so that if there is a blip for a fluctuation that's an anomaly we can pay for it out of that Reserve rather than having to use it you know a mechanism in Baseline budget so rich we we did ask the um MC Bru MC Bru to do an an enrollment thing for us because we should but the Assumption here is on quote normal growth you know we're not taking an account for any um unusual enrollment impact at this point unless we start we have not seen it to date since last maybe March we we've see it coming in if things begin increasing we're gonna have to look at this a little bit differently so the assumptions on FTE is pretty pretty much along our normal growth pattern yeah I I can't imagine any enrollment growth until you know probably the third quarter of 2021 when the the virus thing seems to pan out and that there are some sense of normality but the the my concern is is is the revenue stream as to the the uniqueness we had last year if there were going to be any components similar to that or are we going to basically rely 100% as we've done historically on the city to go back and say we need $7 million as an example not saying it's it's the firm case yeah we're it's very challenging um you know the city had the bu kickoff meeting about two weeks ago and unless a big Federal stimulus package that you know will come to fruition in the near future they're having local challenges just like every everybody else and the message was you know constraints with the budget that said we're going to have to make our very very very strong argument um if there's enrollment increase there's enrollment increase like if MC if the study Democratic study determines that we're going to have to make the case for that um this year what what Dr Sal's asked me to do is really do a zero base so budgeting exercise where we're looking at every single need now we know we're scraping the barrel right um but we're we're going back to the um drawing board and and doing that exercise where if we can find any single efficiencies we're doing that we're talking to our contractors and saying can you do better for us at all this year on the rate you know because it it's trying for everybody and and is there anything better you can do for us like we're going through all those exercises now um this is the picture without those adjustments this is the picture just assuming rolling forward as we are so it's we conversation with joav the conversation we have with Mark one so it's it's water under the bridge he said you know if I needed to this year to raise taxes so be it well you know you got a new mayor and you got an election coming so I just think we're going to we're going to have to zerob base it that's as she talked about yeah Grill down things that we're not using um and I think Rich we're probably going to be uh able to Garner some money from um the new car's money and I'm hoping that's going to mitigate even some of the um because you saw before where Courtney took half a year of salaries of those new srbi people yeah maybe and they're they're specifically to deal deal with the um you know I call Gap kind of instruction if we can fund that um that's going to be helpful to us will help us with any in carryovers basically yeah like those srbi people were things that we wanted to do and Cara used them uniquely in the covid world so it kind of fit both you know it it fit the need to um you know assess corre culum align curriculum align the student the teachers and the coaches I mean I don't want to I'm Miss speaking for her but I'm just paraphrasing to say that it was an initiative we wanted to do and we leveraged it because there was some staffing money related to covid under cares and it's Alliance eligible because you never want to invest in that and then have them go away if it's successful you know so does the the so again for my own recollection the the reserves that you said we set aside are to be specifically to be specifically used for those purposes and not generally to be co-mingled for anything for operational expenses correct and we're really specific about that because that you know you just don't want to build yourself a hole with the reserve so if you did that for example let's say I had a million dollars extra this year I can't use it next year for salaries because the following year I'll be be a million dollars in the ho like we just can't do that but it helps us on our budget because so for example I don't have to budget at the high point for sped I can budget at the place we think we'll be and if the high point comes forward I have a reserve for that so that I can pay for that from there so it's sort of more appropriately saying I want to hold aside the onetime blitz you know so there's more predictability in the budget so we're not at the end of the year scrambling which you know we've been in that position for a while we're we're fortunate this year I mean we're not fortunate for covid but we're fortunate in that that's what it led to um you know and yeah we don't want to put build it into operational nor would the city agree to that you know because we we wouldn't appropriately be able to do that sorry just a quick question Courtney you may not know the answer I know this kind of falls under um Dr casemiro's umbrella but for the uity program um um we put that in place because of wanting to set up a stronger distance learning program so is that a a long-term investment for the district where we're going to continue to maintain that so that's one of the things that she's looking at so she's not sure so here it is you know here's the cost and that was under the car's funding um I think it was the course where so that I believe and I don't want to misspeak so I am going to have care followup um to do the universal assessments as what she could leverage at the time and she's revisiting if that's the best use um so yeah Kevin shaking his head okay so I got that right and and each of these pieces now unfortunately we're a little behind the curve should we have done this already before in the budget cycle yes sure um are we going to hit the ground running right after the um holidays yes you know so but yeah that's one of the pieces that she's got to assess whether it's worthwhile to continue and we'll have those conversations with the board about that okay thanks we started that conversation a little more seriously today but they're beginning to get a lot of feedback on all of them Kate and they're making you know um determinations of the impact and the effectiveness of of those programs because they are expensive yeah yeah and you know just to offer a little bit of feedback that I had heard just in conversation um from a student actually um there was some concern expressed that cheating was quite easy using that program so just a cheating cheating not the only one Kate a lot of them like that yeah and I mean he this this student was not interested in doing that but right assessed that it would not be difficult I I I I do recall like like Courtney said I do recall specifically Edgenuity was one of the systems Cara was talking about reassessing when this is over yeah and it's just because of that cost that I'm asking about it because obviously you know if if that's an area that just needs some temporary support because we want to keep it in place maybe for the next year or two even you know given the pandemic um you know that might be something that we you know address and I think she had an alternative in mind that she was working um with car on that she can probably come and speak to the board at our next budget meeting about um because it is the six to 12 and it had I believe it had something to do with also being able to do assessments and that was what we bought like in March when it was a big scramble you know to get everything ready so let let's see what she has to say about that when we come back and these are the pieces that we'll have to decide are we going to continue you know each of these pieces and what's the alternative you know sure all right thank you very much oh you're welcome so so so every for the board here I mean this is kind of just um you know a shot in in time for what we're doing um it it'll evolve for us my concern is what's going to happen in terms of the Staffing on everybody mine M it's mine with the Matrix and also any expansion over at um you know Ellsworth with those classrooms and how we're going to do that that's that's that's going to be much quicker yeah than anything but I do worry about what's going to happen down the road with the um just the equipment that we needed and I will tell you as a side note the state has changed the way they're looking at funding they used to fund a lot of equipment and supplies for some reason the new leadership they're um they're looking at unless some things are fixed to Labs then they're questioning the the um the funding or the purchasing of them so I'm becoming quite concerned about that whole thing down the road but that's going to have to be I think the board's going to have to sit with me and figure out how we're going to sit with the facilities committee and then with whatever we have with the uh with Joe Cavo or the leadership about a plan going forward yeah and that's what one of the things Dr Sal's asked me to do but here I'm just showing you this year and and Rich uh Mr janelli has also asked that we do is to look at that multi-year so we're also going to need to look at the Matrix operational side impact you know while we're also talking about this year's budget just to be mindful of that because that's only two years down the road yeah Courtney the the uh what do you call it U substitute teachers you had a when you first started I think it was 200,000 did that represent if you go back to Subs I know we talked about in many of the conversations before the the lack of subs and and basically the scarcity of them or that 200,000 is that anticipating uh increases in in the number of people looking to to to to to employ or hire um oh no Rich you know it really is one of the other functions of like right sizing the budget I'll be honest because um some of it was funded with fund balance at the end of the year so if you look at the expenses for the subs over time we weren't fully budgeted for them um and so part of what we did this year was said okay well we we have an eligible um you know we can use Subs as part of the um Alliance carryover so we paid for this year Subs out of the alliance carryover this is restoring them to the budget at the level that we need so in other words it's not it's not an increase above and beyond we increased a little bit this year but it's not an increase above and beyond our expenditures what we would see as like a contract rate increase for the expenditures just special ed cost I mean last year too we were sh on special Edge courts special Edge staff and things like that are we looking to add to that you know yeah so that's get it up yeah we left this blank here because that is one of the priorities that um Dr identified that um Kelly's going to work through what her needs are this year if you recall I'm going to go back to this which I it's I I know it's very busy but we initially asked asked for this money and this is kind of saying what we asked for and what wasn't funded out of our original asks and I'm trying to find here special ed so we we um funded three special ed preschool teachers and one speech language pathologist as well as staff for the new Granville school and what we delayed in our original ask and we've been delaying for many years is the speech language pathologist a reading consultant two additional sped teachers and we ended up sharing a well we were going to share a custodian for Granville we had to find money for that because that wasn't going to work in a CO environment so I should change that note but so Kelly's looking at her teachers and whether or not she's going to request for a speech language paolog this and what's also not shown here because we didn't put it up as part of the original plan but it was part of our conversations and Dr Sal still got a review this is a um some additional um supervisory staff on the special ed side so you know whether or not that's part of the board's request will be presenting but it's part of what's being considered um So Courtney when you say being consider mean to cut you off but when you say being considered would that add to the 7.5 increase or are you looking yes this is just restoring things that we were doing and rolling forward what we're doing so this is like nothing new this is our budget that we would say if we don't take anything away or add anything this is what we think we we're still talking about special ed the it group so you know we're looking to see if we can repurpose resources Kim's been really really drilling down with Gina about what we can do to maximize the use of her staff but that said they they've changed we've changed a little and so you know they'll be talking to you about that as well um as we rep prioritize how we support students in what will increasingly be a world that we're going to leverage more you know technology so if fact so very basically you're saying this is more of a maintenance or sustainability type budget however could conceivably grow to be increase because of things that the administration feels are essential would that be correct that's correct okay the other thing is maybe just a quick deviation is the alliance money from the state s have you heard anything to the cont that allows us to think we're not going to be on target with receiving what we're supposed to get and the the acceleration that was promised in addition to hopefully any communication you've had to increase the amount of that acceleration well the the the normal increase is what we're expecting and and I have not heard that we were not receiving you know I'm anticipating that's going to come regarding our legislative work I haven't heard anything about that about doubling up right oh that's no that I have not but we um from from what um uh I was told from uh our lobbyist Ryan and what's coming from the governor's office through caps that the alliance commitment that was made um that he intends to keep it that's all I know at this point okay and I you know for whatever it's worth I did hear something in the summary of news today that there was some money supposedly going to the states for Education you know again I don't know that was from the from from DC the new package yeah exactly I think 60 billion so you know I didn't hear how much but you know the only thing I'm I'm concerned whatever they do that it it know pass through to us and we have never had a problem getting that money you know City it's just what we can expend it for you heard which is a little ridiculous um the money we have now we had to spend by December we could have held on them well it depends on on on what parameters they put on that money for us to make it so we get it a to talk about it yeah okay hopefully they'll take our feedback this time because you know they they pushed it forward and a lot of the districts were surprised on the categories they were asking us to spend the funds you know on and it wasn't in alignment necessarily with what we needed as a priority so hopefully this time we're going to Advocate and they'll listen to us yeah yeah right it it's it's always it's always a challenge looking to get you know get get the money I think last year was the most creative we had to achieve our Target you know I I think going ahead that aspect or that venue is dried up and I think we're back now to you know begging the city for something where you know things are tough all over in this you know and and so somebody hearing of an eight or nine or whatever the increase is going to be millions of dollars you know there's going to be an uphill battle um but uh um I I I feel you know one I you know I thank you for the input at least it gives us a starting point as to for a thought process um the next time we meet if more information is available I would like to see the the increases that the superintendent the administr rtion is contemplating in order to to move us ahead we've got a big challenge going ahead we've got to move ahead you know to just keep us going and then we got to I feel move ahead to catch up for the year we lost you know in the past if that's ever possible you know I don't know how that that's that's possible enough but I I think the next time if we can do it is we start you know dealing with more you know realistic you know don't take it the wrong way but more you know you know firm numbers that we could sort of debate and lock into and and then decide you know what we want to do you going um going forward we have a better handle on our Revenue sources as well yeah ises anybody else in the committee hi Joe how are you I'm glad that you're able to join us did you have any comments Joe no not beyond what everybody I follow the conversation I think everybody asked the same questions I would asked it's it's obviously it's early in the process yeah okay whenever we do there won't be enough money yeah yep that's for sure but don't give up hope um we we uh one of the things is as I said you know we did do this during the holidays it was just to to to get a feel for where we are what we're looking at and and uh you know basically what's down to Pike and what we're going to have to do um it it becomes complicated because we have the new Academy on there which is going to come come to fruition you know within a couple of years and we got to deal with that that funding source as well to throw into a budget stream so you know people realize that when it comes to those years that this is going to be part of our ask in order to fund that for whatever those those monies are um however is there any other comments from the committee members um I just want to jump in real quick rich and you know I've talked about this the last couple of years um in in front of the um Council and I think it's something that we we need to kind of um continue to make a point of conversation which is that when you prop when you look at proportionally the increases in the number of students that we've had versus the expenditure you know versus what we've been allotted um you know to accommodate those increases it's it's just not sustainable and I I totally understand and appreciate that putting together the city budget is a different um a different animal completely and and that it can be very difficult to figure out where you're going to make your cuts my concern is that when you look at the pattern education's been getting the short end of that for the last decade plus um and at that point you know the reason that that we're in the position that we're in where we're we're digging through every little last possible savings is because we're we're operating from a deficit to begin with so I just think that we need to continue to to discuss that and to talk about also you know some different ways that we can approach the state for you know some of the the money we'd like to see from them as well Erica is coming um she was meeting she's I think was rich and and um glus asked for her to come I don't know if you guys she's going to come to one of our January meetings yeah and she she has some explicit as you know Kate and and um Rachel information about the local contribution and put a good narrative together about that that argument and that discussion she shows it pretty um you know graphically yeah yeah yeah because that you the the alliance money we're challenged because it's our ECS funding that they G they gave to us over those 10 years just getting us like Rich says yesterday's money tomorrow today's money tomorrow you know or wait tomorrow the future money that we needed today's money today not in eight years Yer already behind yeah did right Rich can you correct my my dad my misquote it's it's no right Dr s yeah I was gonna say Dr s over the course of the 10 years that you've been here you know you've had the opportunity and Joe Martino and Courtney has had the opportunity to to talk one-onone with with David stair and and Mark himself Joe is Joe Cavo is is new in his position and I was just wondering you know if you could if you haven't already sort of hit him and start bringing him up to speed uh where you know you give the plug for Education um and and try to have that kind of a dialogue as you've had with you know with Mark yeah we're re well reaching out to him and um I know um Courtney's already reached out to Dave and we'll reach out and have a conversation with Joe uh very very quickly with that um I I'll tell you I I I just my guess is Dave will take the lead on this and um you know we're gonna have to really work with Dave in terms of um the allocations and all of the nuances Mark had you know at times he was just you know we'll deal with this and we did um you know we're just GNA have to um you know as you just said we have to create that relationship and it could be short maybe November you know what I mean but we will start Asa p and um you know start seeing what he's thinking and again I feel very strong and and agree with Kate that this year when we get our numbers together or as we're progressing with the the numbers we need more public participation to have an interest in what we're doing we need to educate the public as to what our trials and tribulations are and you know have support at whatever meetings are there so that you know the the general public the parents the teachers whomever that they want to call the state Cod it seems to be a brand new you know nice word use um support education and den you know I feel that we can't and it's getting tough to do this by ourself we've got to be able to reach out make these budget numbers simple enough that the the the average person could understand them quickly and and you know have an understanding for them and and hopefully advocate for us I think for us to do it again by ourselves you know it's a big uphill Challenge and uh I I tend to think numbers you know the number of people supporting us talk but that's something we can discuss going down the road and perhaps it's a good thing for a community relations committee you know members to to undertake to put together uh present ations to to to the general public that's where I had asked for a workshop for for Erica because I felt the it was timely you know for the information that she had to to to give us to coincide with the budget process so um that's basically all I have to say and Rich I love the poog work that that Kevin stoy missed the last meeting for that like people are just engaged in that in a way that really exciting and maybe we can leverage some of that excitement to fuel for our budget because people are really engaged in thinking about in a positive way what our graduates of the future will look like um and as we look to like Dr s said the two-year budget and Matrix and what we really need that's a good way to leverage that really committed engagement that Dr CI o see gles tomorrow tomorrow there is a legislative breakfast I was registered but I have a meeting I may I might not be able to make it but they have another one I think in January yeah if anybody's registered but you know we'll start our advocacy there obviously um and I think you know we got to do it locally as well so yep very much so okay and are there any other questions from any of the the members he I do yeah happy [Music] holiday I hope you all have have a great holiday and a healthy one French and don't yeah don't travel I'm going to Jersey don't give up your day job that's don't give up my day job that matter everybody have a good holiday

the tax living there's been no new updates from last board meeting so everything is as it was at the last meeting um the request that we were asking um is about a 4.89 increase over last year's extension we only think we're going to receive about 4.26 percent of that our bond payments are going to be they go up a little bit to 7.88 for 500 8 million and this is with the projections of the 791 million for eav 14 million 900 for new construction as long as those assumptions are kind of close then we anticipate our tax rate to go down from 6.81 to 6.76 so in your board packet you have resolutions to adopt the levy you have your truth and taxation certificate the levy summary sheets and the certificate of tax levy forms so once those are all signed and approved i will seal them and then deliver them to both canaan dekalb counties all right any questions for david nolan yes yes brown yes danson yes yes promotion second i need to discuss and improve the donation of a thousand dollars from the central education foundation to assist families during the holiday food drive so moved thank you um again we have um a thousand dollars from the central education foundation don't they donated it for our holiday gift basket project um we were able to serve over 260 central 301 families with this our transportation department and the boosters volunteered and drove them and dropped them off at their houses central athletic boosters opened up their online payment and they gathered they collected over eight thousand dollars in from staff in the community just wanting donate money um so all of that money raised along with this thousand dollars went to purchase turkeys and gift cards and other things that we might have been short on um and then there was actually about 1700 left over so we're going to donate that to the prairie knolls food pantry to continue to um service our community awesome so it's a huge event [Music] yes motion second are needed to discuss and approve the intergovernmental agreement between 301 and the other districts that comprise the northern king county regional locational system which include d300 u46 and saint charles 303. this is just part of us taking over as the administrative and fiscal agent it came as information uh previously and so we're just looking for action uh so that we can continue the work for the efe our regional elements it would be basically us covering all costs for administrative if the grant didn't come through so far it's come through on an annual basis as well as administering anything that we need to do for all four districts just out of curiosity are there more agreements because i know we did one like two months ago right these are the veterinary clinic we have so we have vet agreements that will be coming forward every month as we get more vet partners that's part of the externship and the veterinary program this is the actual intergovernmental agreement between the neighboring districts and ourselves to work together in partnership right that's true it was information it was an action that's why this is the action to bring it forward so that we have it finalized there's been no changes to the agreement since november yes brown yes samson yes nolan yes gorman yes clean motion and second to discuss and approve three veterinarian affiliation agreements so as part of the externship program portion of the veterinary science program we continue to reach out for business partners these three are new new business partners for us this year it has been a little bit of a struggle for us to maintain those with covert 19.

we did have to limit the number of students that were able to go off for externship the second semester to complete the hours that they need to our seniors only who are taking the test in may we do have enough partnerships for that uh but we do not have it for some of the students who maybe we're not finishing up as seniors we have like seven students that are seniors currently who will not be able to complete their externship but they did not have enough hours anyway to get their testing completed in may but we're excited to have these guys as business partners so we look forward to you approving these agreements brown yes johnson yes nolan yes yes gorman yes after eight super quick minutes run information items so we have the first in-person and remote learning status report so we wanted to just give you a primary update one of the things that we did want to you have at your seats uh the encore newsletter to take a look at some of the activities that are going on i do think our teachers are doing a really great job of kind of figuring in this whole synchronous asynchronous activities um and putting it all together you're seeing kind of a newsletter that showcases the different activities that the different encore groups out of central middle school what they've been doing with their students to really get interaction um with all the students whether at home or face to face in person and so this was kind of just a pictorial of what's going on we also want to take time to show you a video that was sent our way for a winter concert that was done through central middle school and the cool thing about the video we're going to show you is it not only showcases our students in eighth grade who are performing with the band director kevin fredericks but also it has two other teachers that have given their time uh to make a difference in the lives of these students as well and so you're going to see a video clip with these other two teachers uh scott parole who was actually a math teacher at prairie knows joining in with his guitar and then we have jim strike as well who's joining in with his guitar along with the 8th grade students and it's amazing to me when you think about these students are at home playing their instruments all together in eighth grade without any kind of major mess up so it was very very impressive so we wanted to take time to let you see this video [Music] um really the spirit of what is going on out there and our teachers stepping up to let students know that they're there for them regardless of if they're teaching them or not so i thought that really represented kind of the um really the commitment of our teachers to come and make sure this experience for our students is really a positive experience in addition to the encore presentation all this coming out of central middle school right now i'm sure we'll have more to share with you as we move forward the other updates we want to give you is that pretty much we're flat in terms of the number of students who have shifted between remote to hybrid high school has a larger shift of many more students going off we should say many more less than 20 per grade level going into uh more of the remote versus hybrid uh 10th 11th and 12th grade but otherwise it's a pretty flat number um across all other great levels for the second semester as we come back so schedules are currently being worked on and will be completed prior to the winter break finishing um the next piece is that the board received an email from a parent regarding my presentation last month where they had asked for us to look specifically at remote only students and if there was if maybe we missed that piece that they felt that maybe the hybrid students were not performing as long as remote students and really wanted me to take a look at that so i did do that for tonight's board meeting so it's a pretty short presentation um that i'm going to walk you through to kind of show you what the data shows in terms of evidence remembering 42 just finished up so this is quarter one data so it's basically the same data you saw last month so this graph represents all the remote only students that we have currently in the high school so we're looking specifically at the high school because it's the only school that currently has a blind between hybrid students and only students that are happening at the same time within a classroom we have 323 total students in high school that are remote only students and they're taking kind of a breakdown between remote only could be remote and hybrid mixed together and then to the right side you see the dark bar there so we have 323 students when you see that 130 that it represents our students in remote that are getting these enough so that number becomes important for us as we start to drive down or dig into that debt a little bit deeper the other thing that i think is really important to look at is the students with disabilities and how are we managing within that that student population for d's and f's so you can see we have 258 students that are one only that are without an iep 504 or english learners and 86 that have remote with d's and f's so 86 of the 258 students and then you see the breakdown by number of students with ieps a number of students with students with five and fours and then the breakdown of network students with with el english learners so for the most part our english learners which are get to be a fairly small number when we get to high school it's not a large band you start to look at this we also have students that are mixed between these subgroups and so we did not include them in because we want to show just those iep kids and that end size was so small i did not represent that because i didn't want to give those populations away so the numbers don't match exactly that's why next slide so then i looked at everyone only students with decent apps by course type and when i say course type i wanted to look at the students who only have hybrid classes and primarily because they can't be a good comparative they don't have the experience of remote and hybrid so i really wanted those groups of students that had both an experience and a remote and hybrid because i needed to see how did they perform in those two different instructional types of courses so that 133 becomes a hundred so we have a hundred students at the high school that actually falls in the classification of having courses that are either hybrid and or remote so that i could do a comparative and how did those students perform within that setting any questions on that so next slide the next thing i did was i said well let's look specifically at those hundred students and dig a little bit deeper by coursework to see if we see any differences within that subgroup of 100 students and i broke it down by the four what we know is the four core classes math english social studies and science the blue represents remote only students with d's the red represents remote only with f's the yellow represents hybrids with these and the green represents hybrids with f's so if you take the red and the green that shows you the number of students who are failing classes within these four types of coursework math english science and social studies and if you take the blue and the yellow that's the ds and the reason i show these is those are still students that are on the cusp of maybe struggling academically so we want to make sure we're picking those students up in this data you can see that we have a fairly large number of remote only students as compared to the hybrid if you look at the right degree in math 21 students versus 13 students for remote only failing at a higher rate yeah 20 students to 12 students higher rate and the remote only science much closer closer match at 13 and 11 so fairly close and then social studies we have 14 in the remote and six in the hybrid yes this number of d's and f's so one student could be responsible for three f's in here right okay what so do we have what percentage of remote students have one d or an f i'm sorry this is the number of students this is not grades no students with at least one d or one out that is correct if they had a d and an f would they show up in both yes okay there's only ones in each correct okay so the next thing i did was i said well let's look at the math courses did it matter the type of math courses and how they were performing uh so did they perform better say in physical education or in fine arts or some of those other courses and again you see them stacked up i did not put these in order so math of course a is not algebra one i mixed them up because i didn't want to throw any specific teacher or content underneath the bus so those these are pretty much just mixed up and if you look again this is compared to these different courses offered up as both hybrids so these are the courses that are being offered and how the remote hybrid and only are performing again you can see remote only apps are red a hybrid after green so i'm looking at kind of the reds to see the trends there and where they're falling by specific courses that are happening and you can see for math course a for math course c ela course a ela course b science course a social studies course b so states course c those numbers are much higher high you know a little bit higher we only look at nines and ten so then what the hybrid period is so definitely a remote student is not performing as well as a hybrid student not dramatically different but you're only looking at 100 kids in terms of your whole subpopulation of like 1300 students so very small piece of a population and then i did finally did a comparative of the percentages of diesel in remote only in hybrid courses for students in general so the number of students with larger percent of df and remote only courses so of the students was about 100 54 of the students um had more d's and f's in remote online courses as compared to hybrid was 43 percent and there was three percent of our population that basically had no change at all so they're pretty pretty consistent regardless of the type of course that they were taking uh so overall hybrid students performed better or higher than their remote only peers or the students that were in every month only course within the hybrid course so i think the parent had thought maybe hybrid students were not performing as well in those types of courses where there was a mix of instruction going on that is not what we saw the slide before this one yep those are the random remote only courses only courses students that are in a remote only course correct are my only courses one else two geometry free calc one of those specifically taught the only remote kids right and and then the green and the yellow right talk to the hybrid which could have remote kids in there so it's the remote only teacher for remote only kids versus a hybrid who has a mix between all of those correct did this surprise you yes love it what well you would think if they had a single teacher and i think it was the argument the parent was making if you had one teacher focused on one group of kids just remote only that they would perform better that i teach you has to do a mix of those types of kids right and in fact we found the opposite that the teacher it was performance doing the mix of the hybrid and could be remote only in there it's hybrid so it could be remote kids in there as well synchronous with the kids at home um or performing better in the overall analysis how does this compare with last year in terms of overall percentages i mean is it a major change in any of the areas major um i don't think we're as high as some districts in terms of the d's and f's uh it's substantial i wouldn't say it's drastic but we've definitely seen more d's and f's across the board than we had before we did an analysis and i don't have those numbers memorized but we looked at how many students actually who never had a drf before have one now the problem is we had to go back to seventh and eighth grade so it wasn't good trend data because it was historical in nature and so a freshman in order to get two years trend i had to go back to seventh grade year seventh eighth grade and then freshman so it wasn't a good comparative myself because i had to go all the way back to eighth grade so it's eighth grade freshman sophomore so i didn't feel like that was a good comparative because it's two different types of experiences and in those cases we saw i think it was like 50 or 60 students that actually had worse grades here which is not substantial for 1300 kids but this this has made natural i mean it's in national school news about a number of d's and apps increasing across the nation in in the various learning models um we've been addressing it as a standing item on our administrative meetings and um we have principals monitoring their df reports for their buildings and then working on working to try to enter intervene and you know help these students we have principals who are marrying up with teachers to try to intervene we get you know parents aware of it try to get interaction between the families trying to come up with solutions on how do we help students have better academic behaviors um completion of work those types of things but it also makes you rethink about how are you grading you know what is the grading practices that we have within our school system and definitely something that will be coming up in ccc again we talk about bringing practices it'll be another conversation about you know what's in a grade what is important in a grade what are we actually assessing when we grade students is it the outcome or the learning target or is it that they can complete homework and is the homework the the means to the end we do have some teachers where we're having conversations where maybe either a student can come in and do very well in an assessment but they're not doing their work but they get a full score well is it more important they can do the work or i mean more importantly you get the grade on the assessment that's actually assessing the outcome or they can do the work and i think there's a mix there we all kind of think that uh but what is that balance and i think that has to go the curriculum council to have more conversation and we talked about our last ccc meeting in person in february i believe yep which was my only in-person one so so obviously we're tracking changes in changes in grade levels by by individual student obviously um and involving parents a lot more than perhaps historically we would have done yeah i think we definitely have to involve parents i think a lot of times when they're in school every day um it's easier for our teacher to follow up and to stay on them when they're at home three days a week we need the parents to partner with us to assist us in making sure that some of that stuff's getting done and i think that having that communication or collaboration definitely makes a difference for those students especially students that struggle a bit more i mean don't have those academic behaviors to help them get done what they need to get done and again if you if if we're looking at basically saying hybrid students are generally doing better than four remote students right for what being part of that must be obviously because there isn't the check in um on a sort of person-to-person basis correct um as as yeah as much as it would be otherwise right bad and they're turning off their computer screens and probably going back and laying down and you know i know i've heard teachers say they've called on the susie you know susie doesn't respond um and then eventually she checks out so it's it's it's making sure that they're they're there do we already feel sorry i'm curious do we have any feel as to whether of how much of this is actually in completion as opposed to as opposed to sort of doing bad work right um i don't have those percentages i mean do you feel that there's a large element to that here i think there's a lot of not completing their work so involving the parents might actually help that i mean i think it helps i think it's two-tiered it's a it's about involving parents and trying to do that partnership but it's also about what's in a grain yeah you know what is it that we should be assessing what's part of that grade uh what is the percentages high school does a really good job of setting up categories in middle school elementary's just learning to do that so what percent you give to assessment versus what percent you give to homework that they're completing you know should it really be everything thrown together to give them that score or should there be a different percent based on the outcomes that you have so it's really what's in that grade how do we know what we should be grading how important is the grading and making sure that your grades represent what it is you want your students to know and definitely work ethic is one piece of it but it's it shouldn't weigh in where somebody's performing really well in assessments that they should tell the class uh you know that that's probably not the the percent we want really having those conversations a year like this honing in on the key content knowledge so you you have your learning standard your instruction should be to that standard and then some form of an assessment that assessment could take multiple forms but some form of an assessment to demonstrate to you as as the teacher that okay they now they own this they own this knowledge now and so that's what that's what dr mangan is talking about the quality i mean i'm assuming i mean are we putting an emphasis on actually teaching new learning skills as well i'm assuming that's i mean we're fully remote that nobody's actually had the opportunity to learn that skill before i think i what i've said this year are everybody's a first year everything right i'm a first-year administrator our teachers are a first-year teacher our students are first-year edu you know students because everything has shifted so in addition to learning the traditional educational setting there's also all these other skills that we've never taught or that we've not learned that we're learning along the way i think we're getting better at it i think our teachers are definitely finding their mojo they're getting going and many of them are feeling more confident yeah but that being said you're dealing with other things that they never thought about like how do i engage a student when they when i can't reach them how do i get them to connect with me um how do i make sure that they're signing and when i need them to sign in how do i make sure that they're actually getting the objective of the lesson and so they're thinking that when our students are thinking well how do i make myself get up and get on and get to schedule how do i keep myself organized what's a better tool for me um they're all learning in this digital sense and so it's a shift of what they've always done i do think we're gonna we're getting better and better at it i'm looking forward to crunching the quarter two data yeah to see how it compares to quarter one and have we seen some some good gains i think we have our principals have done a great job of really staying on this and working with our teachers and our teachers are learning new strategies about how to go about this so fingers crossed that we see some better scores and that we saw semester one come out better than quarter one have we thought about and or are we doing any actual education for parents actual classes on how to manage uh we talked to jeff herman who is our he kind of does our intervention stuff at the high school and so he has done some courses up at the high school after the break he's going to do the same courses at central middle school and at prairie knows middle school talking about some of those things what can we do to help our students succeed really talking about those academic behaviors talking about the importance of students staying organized the importance of completing work and all of those skill sets that you need so he's got a presentation he's already been giving out at the high school level and it'll go down to the middle school level i don't know answering parents questions at the same time as well right yeah yeah so great thank you so how's the academic advisory working for remote only kids is that working better than last year checking in with the assignments okay and then one other question is the hype not hypothetical but just in your opinion i guess i would see this my opinion the answer would be yes but if we were remote only i think the remote d's and f's would be higher than these numbers oh yeah if we were more early completely yeah oh my gosh yes uh we know statistically when we're talking to when i'm talking to my colleagues out in you know other districts that neighbor us i belong to a larger organization across all of suburbia their numbers are dramatically higher than our numbers um i think the the modern world we underwent definitely we're seeing a much lower number still not where i'd like to see it it's still higher than it was last year but comparative to our districts who are fully remote no comparison we're definitely uh doing a much better job of educating our youth i believe at central 301 for sure and i'm looking forward to seeing the results because at some point we're going to get a comparative i just don't know when you're going to see that i just commend you guys on pressing the hybrid learning you know i know that pressure both ways and i'm glad we went the route we did with hybrid i mean this is just more proof and the numbers don't lie that hybrid works much better than remote only kids need to be in school as much as they can so and tied into that um there was much talk about a post thanksgiving search and um our district did not experience a post thanksgiving search so that's great news i think much of that is due the fact that we have really good sanitation um procedures in place that we really practice social distancing to the greatest extent possible and mask use and i think that our our parents and our students are monitoring their symptoms and if they're sick they're they're keeping they're staying home and that's keeping us safe as of friday uh the 18th we had six positive cases across both staff and students in the entire district wow so i mean we're doing very well and now it's just you know as we continue forward we plan on welcoming everyone back on january 4th so but again i think it's to the diligence of of everyone following the proper protocols and of course the we have two vaccines that have received approval the issue with that is that there is no vaccine that's been approved for pediatric yet the cdc is recommending the vaccine for for individuals 16 and older the first groups receiving the first batches of vaccine which started last week are our health care workers our frontline workers and then on our long-term care facility individuals would be will be receiving the vaccine and people that work there um and what they're doing is if you were part of a group that received the first batch of vaccine you you received your second dose in 20 some days and so they they hold other vaccine um so what they do is if you are part of the first group to get that vaccine they have other vaccine ready that they'll ship out that would be for those people so they can have both doses there they do recommend two doses of the vaccine um you can have one dose uh and they just don't know how effective it will be long term so they are recommending uh a booster dose and then the other thing is since this is a novel coronavirus they really don't know if you know down the road there's going to need to be a booster or you know how it's going to react that way but we can see that they expect other phases to come online which could include um different various essential worker groups including educators possibly in late january february and um in my latest phone call last week with the king county health department the cdc and groups have indicated they believe that there will be enough vaccine available to pretty much provided to anyone who who would seek that vaccine during 2021 so we're going to be vaccinating in in school so that's interesting because i remember as a as a student a young fourth grader standing in line for the max vaccination in the 60s they're moving away from that i'm talking to the educators right they want to do it they want to do it through um they want to do it through other means they they want to do it through pharmacies through doctor's offices you know through health care clinics and that's a little less scary maybe for people too and they're hoping that we can reach 70 to 80 percent of either people who either have received the vaccine or have um recovered from kovid and before they can declare what they would call herd immunity are we gonna be requiring vaccinations by digicodes uh the vaccines are not are not required at this time the eeoc ruled last week that you could an employer could in fact do that but but the cdc itself is not saying that vaccines are mandated for for um for anyone at this time [Music] facilities work order summary so another month down another month in um i appreciate the kudos from dr stern because our staff is working hard um they've been doing a great job keeping up with it working every saturday it's it's a lot you know our wednesday disinfectings but they're they're doing what they can do our department's doing what we can do to make sure that we're doing what's best for kids and that's having them in school so we appreciate those kudos again our data shows uh pretty much the same as it did last month our staff works really hard at closing out the work orders especially the cleaning ones in light of what's going on um i want to again thank mandy for putting this together for us she's our our data expert so she put this together again for us for this month so this is november 1st through november 30th we were from the start of school till october 31st in the last presentation all the buildings again are our cleaning work orders this is just cleaning and custodial work order so this is only a snippet of what our total work order load is on a month but this is what we're focusing on is the the cleaning and custodial work piece um every once in a while we're going to have a work order that that takes an extra day or two depending on when the staff member gets it there may be a little more involved in it but we work really hard especially the the cleaning and sanitation wants to get them taken care of same day our staff is getting a lot more in tune with the cleaning procedures with our new night supervisor working with all of our new staff especially on procedures and how to look at their workload we're definitely minimizing the work orders that come in for inadequacies and and what we're required to do so that's again kudos to our staff for for that cms the same thing our staff works hard to get work orders closed out the same day um again some closed out the second day that could be partially from when a staff member if they don't get to close that work order they may close it out in their next shift pk same thing um again this these trends are very similar are going to be very similar month to month since this is all cleaning these are cleaning correct would cause a cleaning issue to last for two days well it could be it didn't it it probably is not that the cleaning issue it took the work order to be closed out in two days so it may not necessarily have been a cleaning issue um it could be something that had to be scheduled to do like it was something that we couldn't get into a classroom to do that particular day so we set up with the teacher the principal to come in the following day hbt absolutely like that's two months in a row congratulations yeah very clean people yeah a pv [Music] and then our total um again very few of those work orders take more than more than one day um again it could be for the time for that staff member to come in their next shift to close that work order i want to take just a minute and speak on so our staff has had a new um the new wrinkle we added to their workload was filling out those daily logs um so they've been doing a really good job at that it was a little work in progress to kind of get them in tune we just started scanning and digitizing all those documents because we've been doing them all in paper but our staff is doing a really good job there's been a lot of great learning moments in doing that um for our staff our staff uses that as a communication mechanism back to us we check those very regularly especially with our night supervisor he's checking them daily so it's given us some good dialogue to talk with the principals about how we do things when we do them and just kind of opened up some communication so that's also been a been a huge benefit any questions just uh address yourself on the back in your invoices board peppy you have the details we don't yeah because it's got names uh this one's confidential because the names on there but for your purposes yeah you can see the rationale behind each of those firstly can i just say thank you very much for keeping up with this management is everything you know just managing that process is fantastic and the detail including removing wasps the kind of things that people do the other thing i would say 89.3 of these are completed by the same day for one day so good job guys thank you yeah good job but keep up with the data please right i said it observation i guess do you guys refill bottles like the night before we we try to keep what we've we've talked about numerous process i mean our staff pretty much as they're going through will check bottles but we've encouraged teachers to kind of just communicate with us through a work order if their bottle's empty we try to but our staff is moving i mean the the extra sanitation we're doing and things it's hard for them and then if a teacher doesn't keep it in the same spot it's it's kind of difficult to manage so that's why we asked them to put in work orders if they needed to get it refilled i remember in our town hall meeting one time you shared that if bottles you know if they're like half full or quarter full put in for an order and make sure that they get filled up before they're empty yep and we have plenty of equipment supplies plenty of materials on hand at the building so if somebody was to run out in the middle of the day the the main office our staff has access to plenty of plenty of disinfectant and plenty of material any other questions okay thank you awesome thank you thank you all right next is the direct school calendar for next year i included a memo and included exactly where they're going to fall this is the there if you remember talking to the board last year i said there was like a two-year period where it seems like we would be starter starting earlier in august and then for the 2022 2023 school year it kind of backs up to more towards that third week again in august so this calendar that that i've drafted up follows the mid valley program so that our students in those programs could could have access to them if we begin on the 11th and if we begin on the 11th that would be for students in k-12 and then preschool preschool would begin or preschool would begin on monday the 16th kindergarten two and kindergarten yeah so it's first through twelve yeah and the eleventh and then preschool kindergarten on the 16th then part of the other reason why i'm proposing this third date is when you balance out your your semesters uh we end the the first semester right before the winter break and that would give 83 days in the first semester in 91 days in the second semester so trying to um balance out those instructional periods um because if we start on the on the 11th with students we're moving parent-teacher conferences up to that first thursday and friday in november can we find those attached to um columbus day like three or three make that like the seventh eighth right now that's on there that way we have that day 40 especially for our elementary school kids we have conferences at day 40 instead of day 56 or 7 30 58 just that way it's end of the first quarter and you know we already have a three day weekend there already half the seventh if we moved them from the fourth and fifth of november up to the seventh and eighth which again is just looked at 303's calendar that's what they did they wove the parenting conference into columbus day something that we could look at just again when you look at the month we have the whole week of thanksgiving off and then we would have a four day weekend in the same month so just from like a logistical standpoint that just seems kind of silly to me to have a four-day weekend and then two weeks of school and another week off versus you know a longer weekend in each month and also just from especially for our grade school kids so i think you know we as grade school parents tend to be more anxious about like what's going on with our kids because we didn't know until thanksgiving which is really far and now this is better two weeks two and a half weeks earlier um but i would argue even getting to the end of the first quarter just makes more sense to me for parents to have communication and yes we know teachers should be communicating with parents we clearly know that and most of them are obviously right um but that's something i would like you guys to consider okay i will take a look at that and i can bring it back to the board i said this is information right now and this is assuming that we're coming back full time five days a week in person right yes correct isn't it nice to think about that [Laughter] yes it's always good to be hopeful i mean that's our goal we want we want us we want everyone to be safe but we want our kids back in school yeah definitely yeah and to be fair if it doesn't work out that way since we're prepared right that shouldn't be this shouldn't affect in theory whatever the expectations would be there's not going to be a kid's vaccine by then so it's not like our kids will have been vaccinated so the likelihood that we're going to be in school full-time with no restrictions i think is quite low so there's going to have to be some variation of the county health department says you can come out and do three feet instead of six feet well then then we can do that i suppose right uh with something different so but this that shouldn't affect our ability to use this calendar though correct correct because we're going to prepare it now whatever instructional model we had the golden calendar the calendar could still work but it is we needed additional time to work out all of the technicalities of our plan absolutely for beginning this school year we now have that worked out so it was nice to have a brief positive moment there by the way just like yeah until debbie downer over there i mean i'm usually an optimist here people so the institute days are those counting live or is that just here in the district the the february 25th day is the king county institute day the other the other days are days where we work on um different curriculum initiatives like october 8th would be just within our district correct i like that idea of moving it to the end of the first quarter you have to still give them a three and a half day weekend in november and switch those institute days over you know what i mean again i just i've always been a fan of pushing them earlier right so just what i'll do is i'll bring back um i'll bring back a couple examples yeah i mean i think that's fine that'd be interesting to see i mean i don't know you know i would assume most of our teachers feel like you know in week nine of instruction they have a good idea about where somebody is falling right that we're not putting too much on them to have to pick a trajectory if you will right if they're going to give feedback to a parent it should be pretty clear at that point at any level right yeah the institute days can you move further in the calendar year as well and change favorably um so this is we're going into um our big bus here our big bus bid year um we're going to have 59 total buses that are going to go up for our our new two-year lease um we're looking to we'll get the notice in the paper sometime this week hopefully and then bid opening probably on jan january 11 ish and then bring the results back to january's board meeting um i talking to people and listening to a bunch of different groups that i have i sit on the demand for you use buses is not there so they're having probably a harder time reselling some of our buses so it'll be interesting to see what the bids come in at there's increases in raw materials there's some greenhouse charges that are going up so they're like everything's going up so i i anticipate obviously more maybe a higher bid than normal but looking at the past the amounts have been increasing over time anyway so i don't think it's going to be that shocking of a bid but it is our big bus bid year all right thanks dana next is foil a couple points so yes we had a foil from smart procure a little bit of a different foia that they were um they were looking for uh information related to to staff information like um which we were able to provide them because it wasn't like personal information related to staff it would be like um district emails which are on our website anyway you can find those um so we were able to respond to that foil and then the second foil was from local labs and that was requesting they're they're the sponsor of the pre-state wire and that was requesting term data for board members like um you know what is the election cycle um you know what are the current board members what's their dream and then because it was a wide reaching for you the school board members you're not paid but um there are some various boards that are out there where people are paid so they wanted to know um your salary you were paid for for serving as a school board member that's easy which of course is zero so we were able to reply to that for you as well there's one um error on the response to them i don't know if it really matters uh the term ending for mitch and laura were too it was 2013.

so moved second motioned by mr newton seconded by mrs waite on the motion any further discussion chia hearing none all in favor opposed motion carries unanimously thank you very much at this time we're going to take if it's okay with the committee i'm going to take an item out of order so we don't have our friends over at quinn waiting through some of the older business so at this time i'd like to um i guess i'll turn it over to dr given to welcome whoever will be joining us to discuss the quinn pto financial report sure thank you i believe we have mr granfield from the principal of quinn elementary as well as i think it's the pto president to talk about some of the fundraising and the financial report since we're not really doing the typical this year they thought they'd come on board and let us know what's going on so great thank you dr gifford well good evening everyone thank you for joining us can you hear us okay yeah i can hear you hi how are you good so we have mr granfield and who else is with us hi i'm linda hamilton i'm the pga president great well welcome and thank you for joining us linda thank you mr granfield maybe you should start and let us know why you are all here tonight yeah thank you for having us tonight we sent over the financial report from last year as linda had highlighted in a cover sheet um the color run was a huge success for us last year um we had a lot um that we're planning to do with the money that was raised by the pto and our entire school organization and then the pandemic kit and then all the field trips and everything we had slated obviously got put to the side um this year we're not planning at this point on doing any field trip any fundraisers and that was all highlighted linda if you want to add to that what you put in the cover sheet um so we have 35 000 that we're actually carrying over from last year so thankfully we don't have to do any fundraising this year we can just completely fund everything that we normally would do for the school for students and staff without any fundraising so we're still able to support the school the way we normally do and not have to put any burden on families this year so no that is great um thank you both that's you folks are really lucky that you're able to that the fun run uh was such a success or the color run i'm sorry it was such a success last year and you're able to carry that money forward to assist with different projects or for different um services this year so i'll turn it over to any of my colleagues if any of them have any questions for either of you i have nothing mr chairman no i have nothing just a comment uh as a as a quinn parent alum uh i just want to comment on what an ama of course all the ptos are very active and amazing in district but i i follow you as an alum and it is so wonderful to see all of the ways in which you you do things for the staff you know even the beginning of the year with the ice cream truck during their pd day you know their days of uh in person for the first time and all of the special food that you provide and just the ways in which you make them feel valued and special is incredible and uh earlier before the meeting we were joking with jonathan how his voice is is uh is well known and he's somewhat of a celebrity when your face popped up i thought well you're a celebrity to me because whenever i see your i don't even know you i don't think we've even met but ever met but you are you know a local local celebrity so you and your team are just so wonderful and i hope that you feel appreciated as well for the work that you put in is is much appreciated thank you yeah and i'll just um end with you thank you again for everything that you do for for the quinn students and for the dartmouth public schools uh 35 000 dollars is it's a lot of money to supplement um programs and as i look through here your list of expenses and all the different activities and staff appreciations and incentives there's a lot that goes on and obviously none of this would be possible without the support of the of the quinn school pto and really all the ptos across the district so um do you have anything for us anything else for us no nothing out if i could just add to that i wanted to close with that of um we're all so grateful at the quinn's school um and miss amarillo touched upon a couple of the things that our pto has already done to support our staff even during these times but one thing i wanted to highlight was the first day of school this year pto came and decorated each entrance way with creative messages and drawings that completely surprised every everybody walking in on that first day of school and they're constantly going above and beyond not only our board members but all of the parents um that spend countless hours behind the scenes you know the color run in itself takes months of planning and meetings on a weekly basis and just everything that they do for the school is absolutely unbelievable and i know i'm speaking on behalf of the entire quinn staff administration and all the parents rpgo is absolutely fantastic so um thank you again to linda and to the entire pto and board thank you mr grandfield hats off to you and the pto over there happy holidays to you both thank you you too thank you thank you mr chairman make a motion we approve the financial report for the uh quinn pto and the budget for school year a second motion by mr nunes a second by mrs amaral on the motion any further discussion chair hearing none all in favor opposed motion carries unanimously mr chair can i just ask that we all speak up a little i think miss gunther is maybe having a hard time hearing us because there's like some fans running i could see her they're going i was wondering what you were looking at i think we just all need to speak up a little bit okay do my best to project my voice thank you thank you sorry kate uh next up on the agenda we will continue with uh under old business continue discussion of the equality and diversity committee so if i go back to minutes from the last meeting we decided uh to hold off to this meeting to continue with some discussion about uh the appointment of two faculty and staff members and two community members um am i missing anything from any any of my colleagues is that correct does that sound right i know that um ms guenther uh put out some emails asking for some um more information from those people uh looking to uh be on the committee so i'll just like to turn it over to my colleagues and what's your pleasure with this well you know we i think i apologize i left my list at home nice smart move on my pot sorry about that but i think we've got a list of uh those people that you know were interested the first time around and you know who actually responded to mrs gunter's uh request for information and if they did not reply then it's my belief that they're not interested so no disrespect they go to the wayside and then we just work on whomever was interested in in being on the committee that's mike so did everyone else bring their lists with them tonight appointments i have it somewhere i'm looking for yeah but i do have it okay um i will say that i did not with everything going on with my in my personal life and uh at my job and with covid here in the emergency meeting i did not have a chance to give this the time that it needed to look through um i have a couple of a couple of thoughts uh as far as who i would go with but it's up to you i i don't want to i don't want to delay the committee any longer um but dr jenkins so i had some time to um to take a look um at the community members and some of the staff members um and so i'll go ahead and get us moving i'd like to make a motion on the community side um that we appoint uh miss shelley scott and miss elizabeth murphy um so i'll leave that out there um do you want me to explain my right my reasoning first or do you want me to get do you want to get a second on that uh yeah i'll get i'll second that discussion so my reasoning is is miss scott i think we had four community members respond if i'm not mistaken uh gretchen baker smith miss murphy miss scott and i think mr pereira yeah i think we're the four that we had to respond um i know miss scott personally she works over at umass dartmouth she's worked in student services for many many years so she has quite extensive experience dealing with a student body and dealing with issues around diversity she does our campus housing so she really knows students she has children in the dartmouth public schools and her children are multiracial and so i think she brings a really good experience both as a parent of a mixed race family but also someone who has an extensive background in working with students miss murphy has also been involved with the schools for quite some time serving on the dartmouth dimelo pto for many years she has children so she had children in demelo dms and now also the high school and then in her professional life she now works with community organization doing outreach to immigrants and immigrant students particularly latinx families south american families and so i think she has another sort of background working with underrepresented groups in our community i will also say prior to that she worked as a college counselor so she also has experience in working with uh with uh high school students so um from the pool of community members that we had those two to me seem to have very relevant experience and very interesting perspectives to bring to the table as we talk about these issues any other comments or questions about that uh mr nunes yeah thank you mr chairman uh one thing i do remember is some of the names and you know one of the you know i haven't i have no problem with uh miss scott uh i was actually looking at chris pereira who was you know was an alumni of this high school uh was a member of this committee and also was a veteran so can encompass a a whole circle of uh you know ideas and uh ideologies and things of that nature and brings again a different you know possibly different perspective on equity and diversity you know to the to the table so that was you know my you know my thought on that did mr prayer return um i do believe so yes he was one of the end yes that's right okay so we have uh anything any other discussion first of all are we sticking with you know community members in this i'm sorry my motion was about community members so i think for i mean i i'll just say like i was leaning towards the um the same two that um dr jenkins had brought up as well i know elizabeth murphy she's also in a pastoral services program right now she's uh pursuing a postmaster's i don't know exactly what the degree is but i think at least a master's in pastoral services at the university of chicago so she's working on that online as well so i think she again like has a broad range i don't know um miss scott as well but again i you know again her background certainly is fitting she wrote a passionate you know letter she certainly seems to have some um deep interest in you know education and personal vested interest in diversity so you know i was leaning that direction as well i thought that it was having children in the schools was important in this discussion as well like in the so that was another thought that i had um and both of those um ladies do have uh children in this current school yeah do you want to add anything i mean i don't really have anything to add it i think that the folks that reached out that were interested all of them are qualified i was um and then a few folks were no longer interested who had who had um previously submitted interest which which is understandable and then some people didn't respond i had i was leaning toward miss ka and miss murphy i was thinking around their background in their professional you know what they do professionally i have nothing again you know i think chris prayer would also bring value to the committee so i quite honestly um yeah i don't think we could go wrong with it so i don't know if that doesn't really narrow it down but um no i do agree i do have a lot of respect for chris pereira and him being an alumni as well as our our veterans agent and he spent a lot of time working on the stadium the rededication of the stadium um and i don't know ms scott but just reading her letter in terms of of of all of her roles in her family and having children i think that would mean bring great value obviously when speaking about you know culturally and linguistically diverse i think that's really important but yeah i i sort of dozen of one whatever yeah what do you think chris we have a motion and we have a second um on can you uh elizabeth murphy and miss shelly scott shelly scott i know elizabeth murphy well i you know her and i have corresponded a number of times not i did read the other letter well i guess we can put it to a vote and i want to say one last thing and i'm going to talk about principles of affirmative action argues that right when we are faced with a decision between candidates that are equally qualified that we should take into consideration questions of demographics and i would argue that in this situation when we are sort of having a debate about candidates who are all equally qualified i think the fact that ms scott is a part of a multi-racial family her children have multi-racial backgrounds are in our schools and so she brings that perspective to the table and that is in strong part why why i nominated her no thank you very very good point dr jenkins mr nunes yeah i mean unfortunately i'm going to disagree with uh with my colleague here for a second only because of the fact until she brought it up i did not know that you know she was multi you know we were talking about the multi-racial she put it in her letter okay i don't remember exactly what she had in her letter i mean i remember reading it but i don't remember what was in the letter contents type of deal so that wasn't playing into my my decision at all and it you know things of that nature never play into my decision whether it's hiring somebody or trying to put somebody on a committee that's that's not part of my makeup i don't look at that at all i'm looking to put the best people into a position so you know i just wanted to to know that anything else so i just want to listen to writing down some names here i i just want to thank kate for um reaching out to everyone yeah it was a big job yeah thank you very much for sending that out and the second time so we have elizabeth murphy and one more time trying to look at the big picture here of everything so i would i would like to see chris pereira as part of this group so i'll go ahead i'm going to strongly oppose and i try not to speak against miss pereira because i think he has done a lot of good for the school district um but i am going to talk about um that when we served on the dartmouth education foundation board he was strongly opposed to efforts at de melo to diversify their curriculum their proposal to put forward books about race ethnicity gender identity sexual orientation and he strongly opposed that um and so i will be frank that i oppose him sitting on this committee um because he has said in numerous places that he is opposed to the diversity efforts that have come forward in other areas and i don't really want a person who is opposed to efforts to diversify our curriculum to be part of our diversity committee so he said that publicly he did yeah i'm sorry can i go ahead yeah so i mean i'll act with that because i also sat in that same meeting and it was um just disappointing to you know he said he didn't want to politicize the curriculum he felt that that was more too that what de mello was doing was you know entering into a a political debate by you know pursuing this path of inclusion and that we should not fund that as the dartmouth education foundation so that was you know to me i will say that was a red flag for me when i considered his his letter like having you know i can't divorce with that history and i also thought that he was one who had spoken the previously about not having any discussions um around diversity and not pursuing this topic um as a you know as a committee you know so at the the start of this you know last year so that was that was another red flag for me so i would say that on those two for those two reasons i mean he's a you know nice guy and all of my you know and everything and um he's done a lot for this town and i appreciate his you know efforts with veterans and everything certainly but i just you know if we're talking about the purpose of this is to be inclusive um and try to expand that i have grave concerns as well so okay thank you for that yep to put it to a vote so we have a motion on the floor in a second to elect our community members of elizabeth murphy and cheryl stott charles scott kelly scott shelby shelley scott on the motion any further discussion chair hearing none all in favor aye opposed me so we have in favor one against uh with mr nunes uh mr mr nunes was against that i did not hear who second the motion the second who seconded it you did you said i'm sorry i seconded it get an amplification system in here yeah it's yeah who put all these air purifiers in this i know trying to like you know project over these kids in class trying to also speak up those little voices in some cases oh my goodness more things oh my goodness is that good kate i'm gonna try to yell um mr chair can i start the uh the conversation about our faculty and i think i do think that we have a number of really you know strong faculty applicants who came back um you know i really don't have i think this is an opportunity because we do have strong people to start thinking about who do we have as representatives in terms of like from the schools so we know at this point we have um a member from the you know high school administration member of the middle school administration so i do think we should have someone on here that is representative of the elementary schools and that's why i thought miss bloom kind of came to me to my mind she's written some very passionate letters um you know i just you know talking about i guess she's been in four different schools she served in four different elementary schools across the district she seems to have a pretty um you know again deep immersion with the pals pass program she said you know she was urging us to make sure that we do have a social worker or school psychologist or someone of that nature and i think that is something that we are it would be helpful for us to bring into the committee and to have that voice and again to have someone who's coming from the elementary because i noticed when we always join the list and you know in deference to john the first time we did have some other elementary teachers who were part of that initial list those did not come back on the second round she did and i thought again in both cases i thought her letter you know it was testimony to a lot of thought and care um as far as the other person again there is um there are several other you know i there's a history teacher at the high school i believe mccarran keeley i don't have it in my notes i thought she was also very strong as well um yeah you know i so i don't but i do think we do need to have one at least one elementary person on our so i'll say that i just what was the name again um kelly bloom kelly yep she's an outreach social worker and again i just think she brings in that you know that piece and what school uh she's a queen i just thought again she was she was strong in that okay so any other thoughts for committee members for faculty members i would um i'd like to ask for consideration to nominate diane missari she's a guidance counselor at the dartmouth middle school i had the opportunity to um to meet with her on several occasions with one of my stu one of my own children she's very she's dedicated she's very caring and she talks about in her response here i have limited cell service i was able to pull up some of this talks about how she deals with the daily challenges of the social emotional health of all these students um and i just think that she's uh she's someone who would look at the the big picture the broad picture um and not just be kind of a narrow mindset i have i have a lot of faith in the integrity of diane um so that's that's just my two cents i think she's yeah like i think she's you know certainly i had a conversation with her just you know again about my own child just a couple weeks ago and same thing you know with covet i think she's you know she's thoughtful you know she and again you know and she wants to do everything she can to you know really reach the students and keep them in school and you know i think she's impressive you know certainly and just nice person but also i do think you know again this uh miss caitlyn mccarran dealy also is another you know person that brings a lot to the table and her personal studies around this subject so again i i could go you know i don't have strong feelings across because i think they're all very qualified thank you so i think all three of them would be strong i don't have a strong preference one way or the other but i do believe strongly we should have a teacher we should have someone who's teaching um so um well you got a little chamberlain too right right that could go in the mix too i i would say if we're gonna have a slot for staff and a slot for staff and teachers we should have at least one person who is in the classroom i mean not that social workers and outreach aren't in the classroom but like that's their job is to be teaching and with curriculum so um i think you have two on your list to our staff and then john you had just added a name thank you i just i just said little chamberlain oh lily chamberlain yeah okay so she's also a language teacher here at the high school yeah she's the advisor of the multicultural club sorry so those are sort of maybe we might think of two different slots for those last two remaining ones i mean if you wonder this is this is just really difficult i mean well i mean sorry my fault i know we i'm gonna violate my own rule here but in all seriousness i mean i agree with what everyone has said about uh kelly bloom your comment about the the young lady from the middle school and i agree with shannon maybe we need a tea and again so maybe you know this is one time that we sit here and we go how about if we have three faculty members i know we talked about two but i don't have a problem if we've got three because we've got a complete different segment here in the in the system we've got an outreach worker we've got a guidance counselor and we've got a a teacher it takes it all into it all into play you know again you've got elementary middle and high school represented right i think that's a great idea yeah that's i i agree i just i also i think it's important that we you know i would think that moving forward that any folks that you know mr pereira or um mr uh i can't think who weren't who decided they didn't want to be part of the committee perhaps it wasn't fitting into their you know schedule or ability to kind of you know to do that but um mr helgeson who who had a graduate who had said he was interested that we wouldn't take in feedback you know on the committee certainly it would welcome anyone's feedback ideas or thoughts and then you know put it to an agenda and then discuss others and you know and then the committee can kind of make decisions but um i do agree i i i with what everyone else is saying as well thank you so mr chair following up on mr news i'll make a motion to revise the makeup of the committee by expanding the number of staffs less teacher slots from two to three second on the motion any further discussion no so we got a motion by dr jenkins a second by mr nunes and there's no other discussion all in favor aye aye opposed motion carries unanimously all right so i did that part so you all someone's got to decide the next part who the three are gonna be who was the the teacher so it looks like we have two teachers three three teachers in the running this chamberlain and miss mccarran is it just these two yeah yeah yeah and they're both yeah they're both excellent yeah i'm reading yeah you know what yeah and then either diane or kelly well we have three so we could do one from the middle one from the elementary was the decision right so that would be the both of them we got the yeah we could and then the third slot would be between miss mccarran dealy and miss chamberlain yes yep yeah yes but someone else has to make that motion any thoughts on any preferences on the um the high school no i mean yeah again either either little or diane um you know caitlin candle is going to be caitlin is going to be good he's going to be a good fit so i'm happy with either one of those personal opinions you know so if i'm just you know looking at this you know so hard but you know miss chamberlain is like you know again she you know she has you know in addition being a you know teacher she also has as you said the multicultural club which you know changed the name to make it more inclusive um she has had i think two children she said that has that have graduated from the dartmouth high she's been a teacher here for seven years um you know ms dealey i believe is also the women's track coach you know so she reaches you know student athletes so that might be a considerate consideration it's you know and she again in her resume was equally powerful and strong can we make four i'm gonna do it i'm gonna i'm gonna make a motion that we um appoint lily chamberlain to the diversity uh committee as a representative you wanna do did you hear us okay i'm surprised because i'm really tired and a little unbelievable so we have a motion by mrs amaral anyone want to second that second you're very brave we have a second by mr nunes so on the motion to appoint uh kelly bloom diane missouri and lily chamberlain to the equality and diversity committee any further discussion all in favor aye opposed motion carries unanimously thank you everyone thank you uh thank you thoughtful conversation thank you to uh dr janet i mean dr jenkins miss amarov also for homing that committee from the school committee so we uh i certainly appreciate that and uh we and we had spoken before just to kind of follow up that you know there would be a possibility of including more people in the course of that you know once that meeting got up you know that got underway too because it sounds like if we have some excellent people it'd be a shame to and they want to be part of it and contribute so i think it would be a shame to you know exclude them yeah participating in something you had some time thank you well done thank you thank you everyone so next up under old business uh we have a continuing conversation on the return to school after the holiday break i'm going to turn it over to our superintendent of schools dr bonnie gifford all right thank you mr chair so after all the discussion um obviously last week and through the week now of course and over the weekend the first thing i want to talk about is having had students stay home from for quinn today i just want people to be aware even though we put in our letter just to be clear that it was still you know as as though we continue to have numbers of students or staff testing positive in our schools there's still no evidence that we have uh even in consultation with mr micho of the transmission in school and all of these cases seem to be again um fortunately a number of them have been students have already been staying home because a parent has been positive so they've been either already symptomatic or just out of abundance of caution stayed home so that's been good so but over the weekend when we had a number of um issues with close contacts that's why we had to decide to keep kids home it was just becoming unmanageable for staffing at that point as you as you know we had the entire cafeteria staff out on once again just because they were deemed close contact so being the one day left we decided that was the best course of action including we didn't have a chance to look at the bus videos at that time so i just wanted folks to be aware and clear on that and also that leads into the discussion about what we plan on doing for after the holidays once again in consultation with with chris mishu and his his staff um the ability although he says now the ability to get into a test or have a test done seems a little bit better than the last couple of weeks whether they caught up with themselves or with the thanksgiving break whatever it was so that's been pretty quick there had been a snag but also that um the there's not such a lapse in the test results so but with that said we know that with the holiday coming we will probably experience a number of difficult close contact situations right after the holiday so with and it can overwhelm our nursing staff uh to come back from a vacation especially one as this you know this big if you will and people getting together and to have to then hit monday on the ground running uh having to close contact and decide making decisions on who to keep home and not so with that said what our plan would be at this point in time is to remain remote for one week after the holiday plan on returning to school hybrid method on january 11th now there are some details in that one of them being that our special education we would like to return to what we looked like in the fall when we started school so our special education students who are in programs would come every day again just like we did that's those few students those few programs that's our plan all teachers would report to the building to teach just like we did now as you remember that means they can go right to their classrooms they have nobody around they can keep to themselves that has worked very well in in our cases so far where they have their resources they have their colleagues they have all their materials and they can remain alone we would then the week after vacation being remote we would go right back as i said to what we did in september where all cohorts would be remoting in every day so we wouldn't do a cohort a cohort b scenario if we are able to come back january 11 things are going well we always want people to be prepared for anything as we keep saying all year it's fluid and flexible and everybody is doing the best job they can dealing with the situations as they come up every single day but be prepared if we have to then say things are crazy things are hot whatever it is we're going to extend it we want kids in school we all can agree on that but we want to be able to manage the staffing manage the contact tracing and just take the advice from again our board of health etc so if we were to come back on january 11th which is our plan full hybrid again we would just resort back to the hybrid schedule which is on the calendar and on another note of course we have one day extra right now on the calendar which we'll be adjusting and putting up because of the snow day the real snow day the other thing i want to mention is that we are going to have a covert hotline if you will for the vacation time we'll be posting that so folks will be able to if they need to report a case a positive case or a close contact identification we'll have one number that folks will be calling into mr kylie and i will be monitoring that daily so that we can stay ahead of any contact tracing that we have to do in preparation for school reopening i don't know if i left anything out or questions that um folks would have i'm trying to look at my notes but that would be our plan at this point so right off the top before i turn it over to any of my colleagues right off the top of my head the covet hotline number that'll be made available on the website yeah yeah we'll put that out will parents i assume it'll be a voicemail box where parents will be able to leave a message can parents expect a a return call follow-up call or to acknowledge that someone received it and yep yes i'm just curious just so just for our parents out there right we'll we'll both be attending to that um we'll be able to then relay the information to whoever needs to hear mr you know chris mishu etc will be taking our an appropriate principle etc um like i said even this weekend you know mr granfield that quinn had so much contact tracing to do so he was the one with his staff calling people back et cetera so yeah people could expect some kind of communication no that's that's really good to know so with that after obviously after our last meeting our remote meeting last tuesday you know i took some time to reflect on everything that was discussed um a number of emails that have continued to come in even as of today to the committee um and i'll just share a couple of my thoughts um in you know what i think of dr gifford's plan um so i'll just start off with while i can certainly appreciate the thoughtful comments and passionate concerns she had with myself and fellow committee members i once again myself i have to look at what's best for an entire district of students and staff when i'm looking to support dr gifford's decision i have educated myself in the research and science but in the end i know there's no magic answer and there's no right or wrong at the end of the day i know that we're going to get emails as a committee from both sides whether we make one decision and whether you make one decision it's going to be we're going to have emails from the other side there are pros and cons to both sides of the argument of staying hybrid and switching to remote here's what we know and this is where it took some time i i really appreciate chris miesha presentation uh tuesday night's meeting i knew that was that to me that was very helpful um we know families are going to congregate over the holiday that's a fact we know that more than likely they're going to be unmasked right it appears that right now what we're seeing is what he was presenting is that transmissions are occurring in the household and this is just me thinking out loud right now and i kind of put some thoughts together as i was going through you know what i would say uh this evening while tess while he did say testing was coming more difficult i do to dr gifford's point i do know that south coast hospital group finally opened up an online portal to be able to schedule testing i can also say though that test results are still taking a little bit longer than normal um you know before like i said originally it was 24 36 hours when i would get mine and now it's beyond 48 hours lately it seems going going for at least the first week remote in january will give us an opportunity to see trends and for individuals to start experiencing symptoms from holiday contact as well as those that are having experiencing systems experiencing symptoms they'll have the opportunity to seek out testing determining close contact is time consuming and ultimately results sometimes like we saw today in staffing shortages requiring buildings to close with that being said i am in favor of at least a one week pause of in-person learning and this is just my personal opinion with a maximum of two weeks if needed i can't see us going going beyond two weeks um you know i i think one week let's see how it goes right and then depending on the metrics and the numbers and consultation with the board of health if we need to do an additional week but i do uh i do like the fact that our special education and our high i need students will be coming back um but like i said i i personally cannot because i know there were some i received a couple of emails from parents that were saying i don't i think some of my colleagues probably did too that uh you know i can't see us going back to last springtime and having uh unlimited closure with months at a time no that's not what that's not what at least i'm saying i don't think this is what this administration is saying um yeah dr jenkins um i 100 agree with you but i want to reiterate this is on us right i mean this is on us in our community we are in a surge right now and we are going to have a surge on top of a surge if people don't stay home right i don't think people truly understand how hard everyone in this school administration is working doing contact tracing it is not sustainable for them to keep working and like this and if this surge continues for us to be able to staff our schools people tell me they'll email me oh you know schools are not spreaders no they're not that's not what we're saying what we're saying is we have to have teachers in the classroom and if community spread continues at the rate it does we do not we will not like we did today at quinn we will not have the staff to keep our schools open i want our kids in school more than anything but we have to be safe and we have to staff our schools and if we aren't safe over christmas this is not going to change it's going to get worse so i support this plan i hope that we can come back on the 11th but whether or not we can come back on the 11th depends on all of us doing the right thing and we got to do the right thing it stinks but you know don't send me an email saying i want my kids in school and then go to a christmas party with 20 people right don't do it if you want your kids at school stay home with just your family i'm having christmas with my husband and my kids and that's it because it's the right thing to do and we all need to do that sorry i'm a little angry about these things but i'm just frustrated that we need to stick to it and do the right thing or we're not going to be able to hold it together and to your point jo i'll just share there was there was an incident not an incident but it was someone shared with me today that there was someone who's supposed to be in quarantine um and they're on posting on social media in groups in a group of people so it's just it's just extremely frustrating this is white you know i do you know i'll just you know echo what you know both you know mr oliver and dr jenkins you know spoke to and i would have you know i was leaning towards two weeks you know to be honest because i am i was very like struck by what mr michonne said you know and i would love you know like to have had him here again tonight if possible i know he's a busy guy but i just i was really struck by you know the difficulties of you know contact tracing you know his account of you know tests with that said a little bit of my anxiety had eased a bit to your point to mr oliver's point about testing seeming more accessible i did go on to the whale's tooth appointment i was able to get an appointment just to see you know just to see if there was availability um i also just put out for my own you know i've been doing of course we all have been doing a bit of research um just you know just anecdotal just to find out are people getting their tests back you know in a timely fashion and it did seem like people in most cases are able to get a test you know and they're getting back their test results generally sounds like 48 hours even though in some cases i know in my case i went the wednesday after things thursday after thanksgiving and my test results were back by saturday morning so i felt that was earlier but it still seems like that's the trend which makes me feel better than when i did hear from mr michaud but i am i'm also concerned i saw a post also on a social media site where people were mocking wearing masks i mean and there were people saying i will high-five the person who's not wearing a mask and i thought you know how we are not living in a vacuum i mean we see that and we want to keep our schools open and you know and those people who are commenting saying well high five i know their parents you know some i know those names and it's it's deeply disturbing and frustrating and you know and i feel for the staff and you know and i want the staff to know i mean we want them to be safe we want our students to be safe we care about the staff i mean there are you know in fact if our state staff are not inspired not feeling safe they're not going to be motivated to help our students achieve at their best you know we care about them as individuals too i mean whether our colleagues or friends you know in the past so i just the whole thing is very um it's very frustrating but i think you know to all the credits of the school what we are doing is excellent within the schools the kids even you know the high school was the biggest concern just because we know it's more difficult to pod and maybe that's something we need to look at as we kind of think of maybe if we need to push them back i know that was in stagger it and we can kind of come to that decision but we do not see transmission happening within the schools and for everything that i've read you know there's a new article that came out i kind of passed along with national geographic that i came out i believe in the 10th and it spoke to a lot of this icelandic study that came out and said and they had this you know iceland's done a great job you know just really with their you know studying with contact tracing and really looking at a core 40 000 people and what they found is that in most cases when children children can transmit it but they were 50 percent less to get it than adults and 50 percent less to transmit it and in most cases it was the adults that transmitted to children and it was not children transmitting it the other way and they did talk about how there seems to be a line with puberty um and that was i think again important for us like to think about that you know our little ones you know are not going to be as risk much risk to the adults and again they came back in the the conversation where the risk was was parents dropping them off congregating hanging out the gate at a you know game i mean that's that's where the concern is it doesn't seem to be that the concern is you know the children if they're well managed but this same article spoke to you know when you see kovid exploding and uncontrolled in a community then it is going to seep into the schools and we're on the we're certainly seeing the ramifications in our staffing we're not seeing our cases but it is if it's uncontrolled we're gonna we're gonna be in some trouble so i guess my only request would be when we're looking at january 11th before that if we can meet as a group you know remotely with christmas showd and just hear from him and have him kind of explain where he sees things so we can look at the 11th and have a few at least a few days even if it's that monday we have a school committee meeting that first monday that we come back no no i feel like we should somehow have some sort of communication as you know just even to you know reassure like each other and the community that and to hear from dr crippen and she says look it's been you know we're hearing all these reports just so so we know we can make a decision that we're comfortable with that we know is not going to overly strain our staff we're going to keep our staff and our students safe so that's where i would sorry for the long thing but no that's okay agonizing about your point mrs wayne to dr gifford is there just for and i agree for for communication to parents to let parents know um i don't want to be throwing this at them on a friday right right are we thinking like like you you yeah maybe mid week or so that you could brief the committee even if it's through yeah through an email would be okay yeah yeah i mean whatever yeah i mean it's without due respect it's gonna be the superintendent's call right as as to what's going on i mean she's going to have to be in consultation with mr misho dr clock the school physician you know things of that nature and what's going on to make that call and when she makes it just send us an email and let us know what's up yeah i would agree i would appreciate some kind of communication yeah ahead of time i don't want to be blindsided oh yeah no i mean again i go back to you know what was going on in march when we were talking in march before the governor took care of everything for us yeah type of deal but you know an email communication is is fine or if we need a 10 minute zoom meeting type of deal you can post it as emergency right you don't need the 48 hours because it's an emergency and away we go right i think i think the bottom line i well let's hear from mrs amaral did you have anything else mr nunes no i'm good so just uh for clarification i mean i i agree i'm concerned worried about our students about our staff about everyone about our community but going back to the students who had been identified previously as complex or high needs those students would not have a pause they would return your proposal potentially would be that they return on the on the fourth yes okay as they had done just like september 15th okay that's that's really great i mean again i want to stress the idea that it's not that we've had this giant explosion of cases in the school but to be able to manage what might become a contact tracing issue as soon as we get back to school to have that slow little bit of role in with fewer students in to be able to manage that and staffing to give our staff a breather and and be able to like i said our nurses not be under that giant amount of stress because even on the weekends i have to say this weekend the hours that were spent by a number of our staff members including mr granfield's group mr kylie myself it was countless hours so to think about coming back from a vacation and then bang either the weekend just right then and that monday so let's give folks a little bit of time so that's what i want to stress it's not that i'm saying there's a bazillion cases and we have to close down sure so with that fewer students in like we did before and then move right in back into our hybrid okay and before i i have other other questions but before i do that could could you or mr kylie go into just go into detail about what that really entails like what you have to look for when you have a case so yeah you know in saying it it you i hear it i get it but in some sense it's kind of it can be kind of breezed over like oh they have to look into yeah could you kind of go a little bit into details about the community there's two pieces yeah there's two pieces i mean there's the first piece one of us gets a phone call from somebody yeah uh between the nurses the principals mr misho ourselves and then um usually the principals then will contact trace within the school and that usually entails a number of cases they call the teachers that would have had the student students may have had siblings in the school which would then involve a number of grade levels uh students may have seen various interventionists uh speech people etc so we're looking and the the principles are their administration will have a conversation with those teachers to say to really get a good sense of what that classroom looks like now we're we're priding ourselves on the six foot distance the mask wearing all of that but yet sometimes you have the littlest guys you know it's hard to to say a hundred percent that they were not close contacts 15 minutes etc etc so and there's the anxiety level as well so sometimes uh the abundance of caution we deem someone a close contact that might have been then mr kiley can talk about what he does with the buses that's another issue sure and in addition it's not just teachers it's it's playground monitors there's a whole there's a questionnaire that we go through with each staff member it's teacher assistants it's different staff throughout the buildings and if it's a student or a staff member it varies as to how we go through that contact tracing protocol so it's it's a lot of work and that's just to get to the point where you identify close contacts then there's a whole another issue about where we go from there in terms of communicating with families and staff members and uh giving them information that that they have been identified as a close contact and that they'll be contacted by the board of health so it's it's it takes i mean these quinn cases took us all weekend but also the bus comes on a little so on sunday i went over to tremblays to pick up these little drives for with bus videos on them and basically what that involves is seeing who is near students within six feet of students who have tested positive and for how long and if it's more than 15 minutes and they're within six feet and then we identify them as close contacts if behavior on the bus isn't great so if students aren't for some reason take off their mask first or eat or drink something or are not sitting where they're supposed to or there's just uh it's a process so um go through that and the same thing from there we identify the close contacts and the schools the principals have just really worked so hard uh to to try and communicate with families and and uh worked with dr gifford and i on this it's it's been a lot on a lot of people i can only imagine to do this yeah thank you dr jenkins so i very much appreciate all the work that you all are doing but one i'm concerned that you all are going to burn out and two it's not a particularly efficient use of our resources to have our superintendent and our assistant superintendent and our principals who are the most highly paid people in our district to be doing this so i know mr kylie you hate to go to the town to ask for additional resources but i don't wonder over the next several months we are probably still going to be in surge and have a lot of cases can we hire someone to help do this work it might be a temporary hire for just a few months to do that we need help and whether we have accounts in our own sort of line items where we've been saving money where we could do that or where we could ask the town for some money from the stabilization fund this would be a one-time use of revenues it wouldn't be someone that we would hire permanently maybe for a couple months just to help you do this work because again it's just not good use of our resources um and i don't want you all to keel over right from exhaustion from doing this but i don't wonder whether we can't um do some temporary hires to help deal with this well that's a that's an excellent that's an excellent point mister i mean i appreciate that and um you know obviously we could talk about how that might work i mean the town's um monies in terms of the cares act are expiring december 30th so they won't have any direct money from from that we do have a stabilization fund but the town has um on their end on the board of health side brought in some additional staff when you've got to go to the reserve fund the reserve fund a reserve you know so they are paying for additional staff on the board of health side to assist with this i mean it's a lot on us but it it it's also important that we have people who understand what we do and how we do it um to do this work because i mean this isn't this you can't take this lightly i mean this is so you really need to understand um our system i i think in order to be able to do this correctly but i do want to mention also we didn't even say about the nurses the work that they help out with of course it's a lot and a lot too no it's a lot on everyone in addition to your normal everyday routines yearly the the timelines that you have to meet with desi with reporting with reports and everything else that goes along with being the district administration so i i think if if that's something you could at least maybe look into it you know i i think i think we this committee would support i can't speak for for everyone but i think it's at least worthwhile because you're dr jenkins is right it is time-consuming and it's a huge burden um trying to contact trace and figure this out like you said that's just the first step so but thank you thank you welcome um but she's still finishing go ahead yeah i know i just had some other um questions i'm sorry no no that's okay i'll try to be quick i know i go on tangents sometimes but so our high needs population that would be coming in i'm guesstimating that's around and i'm not thinking of preschool i really don't have an idea i'm thinking we've got about 40 50 students actually about 100 counting preschool with the programs okay okay so 100 total um i i don't know if this could be done but something uh you know you mentioned the beginning fluid and flexible i have that right on the top of my of my paper and one other thing that the uh deci has been clear about and we are doing a great job i don't know how we fall into with the with the um the new the new regulation a little short slightly short but i mean i'm sure not much compared to a third of of the commonwealth you are vastly at a um i just you know not doing as well as us so we're doing great and i applaud everyone for that okay obviously we can always do better um that's the mantra right but one thing that um desi has been saying is that the guidance is the floor it's not the ceiling and so i wonder now that here we are proposing a pause not for our high needs and our complex kiddos um but proposing and it's just a week right or potentially you haven't voted hopefully and i would i would like a week and obviously if it needs to be expanded but i would like to go back to something else that was in the guidance where the special ed guidance where it did say and maybe we do this on a case-by-case basis i'm sure we probably do i'm thinking of one case where we might actually do this where we have somebody who might not be in a program per se but needed the extra and is in person so which is wonderful so thank you for those people that made those decisions but one thing that um is uh listed as well that i'm wondering if we had a way to include a more comprehensive rather than a pause um it says um we encourage districts to prioritize the following groups of students even if everyone else is remote or hybrid i won't leave the list we know it we know that we know high needs but it does also talk about students who are significantly behind academically and students who were at who are disengaged and are struggling significantly during previous remote learning periods i wonder i would like us i would like to see us if we could i'm sure teacher teachers can identify who those students are and it might not be a lot and i'm and i'm not i'm not saying we can bring all of them in but if there were a number that we couldn't couldn't go past and maybe it's an additional 20 students that are that are that are struggling the most but don't fit that complex high knee category if there was a way that we could do something more for them i would love to see that happen now that we know who those students are right right yeah i know there are a few a handful that are doing that but um what exactly the number is i'm not sure okay i'd have to check on that thank you yeah that's all yeah thank you kathleen barry i just had a i just want to follow up um question as we work back talking about contact tracing um mr rashow seemed pretty concerned that those results at our last meeting that there was a significant delay with you know reporting and everything else did he in more recent conversations seem to suggest that that issue has been mitigated he just seemed to say it was so far out in some cases that it was no not useful which again to me was really concerning so when he was saying that he didn't really say much about the testing coming in but one thing um that he mentioned was the idea like for example if we know a case or so that the students were at a party we've been trying really hard to identify who those folks were and that's been helping as we get tests because it might be so delayed that we already have folks that we know might be involved um i didn't hear them say anything about the test results coming back that much more quickly but no they're very yeah so yeah that's it's an issue and then the other thing i wanted to point out is you know to your point again getting back to like you know reason why you know we support or i support the extra week is that you know quite a few of the testing centers are actually closed so i mean that is something that we didn't come up but you know just looking i know whales tooth has a half day on the 23rd is closed 24th 25th um and i believe it also is closed it's closed on the first the 31st and i believe part-time maybe on the 30th so again it'll be saturday and sunday you can get in and get an appointment but it's going to be backed up with appointments too um and then he mentioned about batching so again like even more reason is that it's gonna be more difficult for people to get appointments during that time frame so yeah you know i certainly again the week at minimum right so i just think we want people to know once again none of the decisions are ever taken you know lightly and we understand folks day care issues and all of that but we just think this is the best course of action for everybody involved at this point we'll keep them updated right so we're looking at right now we're looking at mid-week of that yeah that first week and so be prepared exactly and i think that's relevant um ms gunther just sent out an email someone asking why why not why said at the 11th why not sent to the 13th the date would be the 11th but we'd get that information and have that discussion midweek of the fourth right right right perfect uh let's see right to the update yeah so next up we have the superintendent's update dr gift yep i'll run through a bunch of things so as you know tomorrow is a professional development day and teachers um the schools are going to be doing kind of a half day of department meetings school meetings etc but also what we've done this year is we have this master teacher online professional development that we've engaged in so people are going to be able to independently work on these courses and they have to then turn in their certificates to have the credit given for example the teacher e-learning bundle is it's 189 self-paced workshops and people have already started to engage in them and they're a lot of good feedback we have some for the tas as well so we're pretty pleased with that self-paced courses and general education instruction behavior environment social emotional all kinds of things uh we let's see the stat south coast ems had emailed miss genther this week and actually last week it's monday and we engaged with ali kato galligan at the middle school they donated 30 stockings for needy family so they're giving 10 per school christmas stocking so that was really nice of them to reach out to us for that i don't think i mentioned uh back a month or so the grange dartmouth grange once again donated dictionaries to our grade three those were brought to the schools i don't think i mentioned that so i wanted to make sure we have just making sure i have all of this a lot with um athletics right now one thing which we need to congratulate um andy christophuli he now has been awarded the massachusetts athletic director of the year he let me know that today so he was yeah it is so he got a nice email that it's a reflection of his dedication and commitment to interscholastic athletics in the state of mass and i'm sure he's listening so congratulations congratulations mr christophule let's see um i just wanted to mention that with best as a reminder basketball and ice hockey we will be engaging in that and dc we will continue to have no fans and i could never advocate for fans at this point in time we will look into the senior night like we did before with the other team other seasons of course but i talked to mr chris fulley today and he did tell me that he's really had a lot of conversation with dc tv so they'll be filming and it would be look real good for the basketball games that they can do some if not all the jv because this equipment is there already games uh ice hockey they're still working on that to have the right equipment at the at the rink and be able to film some of those games so that's let's see that's for that i have all of that and then i was going to um have mr kylie talk a little bit about some of the things going on in the schools with the air purifiers the food service and and other things thank you dr gifford so in food service it's important to note that with the decision now to regarding the week of january 4th that we will offer a food distribution for families so similar to what we were doing uh you know previous to this school year we will more details to follow exactly when we're thinking early that week but we will have a food distribution we had one today and we also offered families from the quinn school since we had this issue today where we couldn't uh you know we couldn't come to school we we served 3500 meals today wow from the middle school so i just wanted to thank gene sheridan and the cafeteria staff they're just they've been doing an amazing job that's amazing keeping everyone fed so in terms of air purifiers i've been working for a couple of months on a on a deal with the state originally it was to collectively buy air purifiers and you know i've been looking at this now for six months but the state sort of jumped on board a couple of months ago and said if we can help districts we'd like to and i immediately sent an email yes [Music] as it turns out uh they came through this past week with 200 air purifiers for the dartmouth public schools so they're a nice unit they're powerful we they are also free to us um and they're being paid for by we didn't know that at the time so uh but they're being paid for through cares act money through the state's share um so i just like to thank rick ferreira and the maintenance crew ricky mello joe medeiros and mr doan who also grabbed a box cutter and helped with some air purifiers and we got 200 air purifiers out into classrooms which is takes a while to do that we now have about 500 hepa air purifiers in the district so helping keep people safe and providing additional healthy air flow into the classroom so that's great that's wonderful news that we were able to get 200 200 through the state um to your point mr kylie you were able to get that many out are there still how where are we at with is does every classroom have one now yes every classroom has one most other spaces have an air purifier so for instance the library office over there has an air purifier um there there's an air purifier right behind the tv over there in the library there are several others over there right there there's probably one somewhere there's a couple more in this room in this room uh so we are there's some spaces like the auditorium that we can't really purify um it's just too too you know too much volume in that space but we are um we've spread them out throughout the district we're continuing to redistribute so we had the original ones that i could get were so it were about half as powerful as that unit over there but we could get them so i did and we're in the process now of moving those to smaller spaces so for instance that office will have a smaller one guidance counselors offices and main offices and so we're we're in that process and i was lugging some more around today but we're getting there and uh the ones that i bought the last set that i bought which are a large unit the largest ones that we have uh we just got awarded an eversource grant for eight that paid eighteen thousand dollars of the cost for those so um which was about um about half of the cost of those units so the town will get that money ultimately make no mistake about it this is hundreds of thousands of dollars oh yeah oh it's it's a lot of we're dealing with that's a lot of people fell down it is but um but it's been it's been good the town has supported that through their cares act funding so um as they are continuing to support hvac uh improvements in the buildings and we had crews up on the roof here for now two weeks we've had them up there what's good mr nunes yeah just just real quick mr kylie if we had had to buy those 200 what would that have cost the town forget without the grant or anything of that nature yeah so so these units are about 400 apiece so you know i mean they're they're relatively inexpensive in the world of air purifier you know um so you know i i think when we look at what we've been able to accomplish um with the eversource grant and with the state stepping in and i mean we've really done a lot with a fairly small amount of money yeah we have spent about seven hundred thousand of the town's three million um three million dollar cares act funding that the schools have and i can't say enough about greg barnes and and that team they're helping us uh with that and they have not hesitated to help in any way uh when we've when i've asked so that's a combination of air purifiers hvac repairs [Music] not very much ppe most of that is on on our side through our grant but quite a bit of technology funding to assist in in what we've been trying to accomplish and jonathan uh has had his work cut out for him we've we've gotten quite a bit of influx of technology that's helping with this whole hybrid situation the remote situation so it's been great it really has no i think it's safe to say that we've come a long ways in the past couple of months yeah we have yep i mean if you if you think about it in all seriousness go back to when we started with hybrid and we were you know rummaging our way through it and tonight lately we've had meetings with you know the presenters being remote and being able to hear what we're saying and we can talk to them right the deal you know our hats off to you know mr galashar and mr peratti and his high school students for what they're doing it's fantastic yeah no i think it goes without saying that we have a lot of talented and dedicated individuals um working in the dartmouth school system and also a thank you to dc tv for everything they've done too absolutely yeah we have a phenomenal community television program here oh sure anything else that's about it no i really don't have anything other than you know just a big thank you um just a big thank you to everyone um countless hours extra hours that everyone has i know that everyone from the classroom teachers all the way up to central office building principles i know dr gifford brought it up but i think it really is important that we do acknowledge our nurses um this is a whole new um new age that we're in and that they're dealing with and there was actually a nice article i think in the in one of the recent papers of uh discussing and highlighting the important role that school nurses play play right now so hats off to them but yeah no just um you know please everyone this goes to everyone over here at this side of the table please take some time to yourself to enjoy your families whether you're uh social distancing and zooming with your extended family exactly so um on behalf of myself i wish everyone a happy holiday into all of our yep one second our faculty and staff at home um and to all our community members um just uh wish you a a safe happy healthy holiday and please please do the right thing in social distance i just wanted to remind everyone that people our viewers may not have seen this but i know a lot of the school community watches miss amarillo might know the town hired a new youth advocate yeah so uh this week we i'm super excited i've worked with her in the past dolores joseph was hired as our youth advocate and i um i would like to see i had spoken to chris have you come to a meeting to sort of talk about what her plans are i know she hit the ground running um and i also i mean for community members too she is a resource families are struggling no that's actually a really good point and then to um kathleen actually reached out to me i dr gifford and i discussed it we didn't put it on tonight's agenda but right now yeah exactly so she will we would love to have her come out to one of our school committee meetings introduce herself and and i think a lot like you said a lot of a lot of community members probably don't know that we have a youth advocate so what an excellent resource and a great resource for anyone while the schools are closed and maybe there's less access to some of those things that she might even though she's new she's a veteran of these things so she's she's this resource for families who are struggling yeah i saw that post yeah yeah nice today that was great anyone else mr news yeah thank you mr chairman just real quick just want to congratulate the uh diamond high school theater company for uh their great production that they did over the past couple of weeks uh they show a wonderful life uh you know even with the pandemic you know as theo saying goes the show must go on and they did a great job you never knew again almost on the lake high school graduation how they just cut and spliced it all together it just really flowed very nicely so my congratulations to uh dennis lawrence and shirley baez the co-advisers and all the students for a job well done so thank you anything else merry christmas yes happy new year that's right our next uh scheduled regularly scheduled meeting of the dartmouth school committee is january 11th yes yes yep at this time chair will entertain a motion to adjourn second motion by mr noon second by mrs waite on the motion any other discussion all in favor post motion passes unanimously merry christmas happy merry christmas happy new year be safe social distance

participate in the united way campaign and this year it's more important than it ever has been to participate in that campaign you can donate as little as a dollar on a weekly paycheck for 20 and if everybody in our school system did that it would be a significant impact on kids and people who need it in our community or you could donate more you could do a one-time donation or paycheck donation and i bring this up because this year we want to try and bolster our participation a little bit we've had a very rich history and so um talk to your school principal if you'd like to participate if something specific you want to donate to the american cancer society you can or crohn's disease or diabetes there are many choices for you and it makes a big difference for them and it makes you feel good too so please consider that the last thing i want to just reinforce for people is that our cheshire ed foundation 25 years this year incredible what they've done for us this year they just added you this is really um twofold this afternoon is about two things it's one to say thank you so much for all that you're doing to keep our kids in school and keeping them educated and keeping some sort of normalcy in their life uh that can't be understated i know it comes with tremendous anxiety sometimes and a lot of stress about how hard our jobs have all become this year and we really appreciate that this is just a small gesture of a way for us to say thank you for that the other part of this afternoon is about supporting our local businesses they're such incredible partners for us we make each other happen we're one of the largest employers in cheshire and if you can frequent them uh that means a lot to them and their livelihood means a lot to us so you know not only if you didn't win today certainly if you won we expect you to go there and take advantage of the opportunities but if you didn't please frequent these local establishments they mean so much to our school system and community so thank you to all of our participants our businesses who participated and again i hope you can go and uh express your thanks to them as well so mr macciano what do we have that's it i know it was a little hard on you before about going out of turn which i apologize it's a stressful time of year so i'll let you draw we're going to redraw the cheshire community ymca 25 gift certificate plus a one month free use of the fitness center okay another thing santa could use this time of year with his his pouch susan murphy chs secretary congratulations susan okay does that have two minutes to uh anybody who has not already yet uh if your name has been drawn you should email carol jaczynski to declare your prize and if not we're going to give this just another minute or two before we wrap things up it looks like most of our prize winners have emailed us in to let us know that they're they're uh claiming their prize but we'll just give it another another minute or two um yeah we just have one we're waiting on one we're waiting on one okay uh in other news i just want to share that uh i know there's a lot of uh you know there are many questions about the vaccination protocols and uh i just want to share with you that i met with maura esposito today from chest for cot we are in the process of planning staff vaccination if you're interested uh they are they've already started vaccinating some of our staff our nursing staff will be be vaccinated next week several of them and so uh the process has begun and that is welcome news to us it signifies some light at the end of the tunnel and we're hopeful that you know by february break uh where our february break would traditionally be there the five day break is now three but we're hopeful that during that you know by that period we could at the very least have some news about uh cheshire public schools staff vaccinations so we're excited about that we will keep you posted it's not required but it will be available so i just want to let you know so i feel like the old days where we do the deer you know the jerry lewis telethon we're just waiting for updated totals and uh elf maciana is working feverishly at the desk to try and determine if uh we're all set i think we have to redraw one one more we're redrawing one more what which one are we drawing here first it's time for a hand sanitation right sanitation because you took off i took off my ppe yeah and i don't know where ben's hands have been that's a good idea i i have a sense of where your hands have been which is why the ppe is really appropriate okay all right so cheshire cat and dog too if you recall it's a 50 gift uh i will tell you we i do my dog food shopping there the dog's quite happy and they are great people over there heather and her husband do an awesome job again they also support our school system by employing some of our our students there as well so jenna brady is a teacher at dodd middle school jenna you have a couple minutes to email carol for that fifty dollar prize so anything that uh any pressing and exciting news elf marlene from the uh curriculum office you want to share any messages i just think everyone's worked so hard and we have everyone's really looking forward to spending the break with family and friends and i just want to wish everyone happy holidays yeah yeah excellent absolutely mr maciana anything you want to share well thank you everybody i know it's been a little bit of a rough year we needed a lot of cooperation from everybody to get through um i think it's been amazing that we've been able to stay in school in all our schools every day and that's in no small part you know or a big part of it is the result of all of our staff you know following the guidelines you know taking precautions making sure when they're not feeling well to stay home follow our cleaning protocols using enviro cleanse very important taking advantage of our fine ppe and so for school district operations i'd like to say thank you merry christmas happy holidays have a happy new year yeah so you know as we start to wrap up we're just waiting on that last confirmation i do want to take a moment to acknowledge two really special people that uh helped make this happen actually a few people uh jen chody canal and and carol jaczynski carol plays a an incredible role in our office getting communications out to you and most importantly for today she's verifying all of our winners so that's a critical role obviously for you [Music] yeah she's uh the pricewaterhousecoopers of this operation right now and she's pretty much the brains of the operation the rest of the year so congrat thank you very much to carol uh for everything that you do a little round of applause in the house and then um the people santa's mouth is falling off the people who helped really i mean really uh made the show possible for us mike salamini behind the camera today thank you mike support he's had an incredibly challenging year too with the inordinate number of meetings and everything else we've had to deal with this year thank you mike and then finally kelly lens who was out beating the streets for days meeting with all these businesses to get their support and participation so kelly thank you so much for everything you've done to make this such a fun event [Applause] how are we doing okay and so i think that does it we've heard from everybody again on behalf of everybody here today and our our local businesses please support your local businesses and thank you so much for everything you're doing for each other our kids in our community congratulations have a uh whatever you celebrate maybe it's just the end of a putrid 2020.

how we ice them though so so do your best maybe in the future um but so for icing people i did see some uh people make a comment the icing that i use is i use uh powdered sugar and um vanilla vanilla extract and milk and just a little bit you you put in the powdered sugar and it's just amazing how quickly it ends up it is already absorbing yeah so and now it's already starting to set too so that's all we do yep do you want to go ahead and do that and are we going to paint some cookies [Laughter] on camera okay so did you want me to ice the ones that are in the tray yeah just do that that's fine we won't spend a ton of time on this but i'll keep reading the comments while you're doing that go for it then we also got hi oops i think i put way too much icing on this gingerbread guy oh well kuwait wow all right that's nice okay so that we're not going for perfection here it can be again i think i've shared that before on some of my videos that um you know it means more because you did it so the fact that it's not perfect is okay and then we just put a few sprinkles on can you see that it's probably not that's okay i'll hold it up oh there you go yeah we're trying so we're gonna display those of you that submitted pictures oh yes we're gonna display them here when i read and so we're trying to work with yeah yes with that situation yes so we'll do christmas cookies and then we'll read twisted network or you'll redesign for christmas and i'll flip through all your pictures yeah and we won't keep you too long am i kind of getting out of the camera thanks ryan yeah thank you ryan okay okay sweet wait do we need to do more of those do you want to yeah we can keep going we got some questions that people submitted through instagram and youtube or while you're sprinkling can you multitask can you speculate i probably can't okay am i actually doing the cookies then i thought you were gonna i was gonna keep icing but you gotta sprinkle oh okay all right so from youtube from the youtube community page if you're on the youtube community page love all the questions that you guys submitted okay um casey guy asked what is your favorite christmas song uh i remember when i was a little kid singing hark the herald angels sing and um and i thought singing was just yelling so i liked that but um now as i've gotten older i like uh joy to the world i think is probably my favorite did you really think singing was just yelling well my you know i was probably in third grade or something in my classmates these are so well you're really good at that [Music] you're so thick yeah oh the icing is probably a little bit thick anyway um oh you said joy to the world joy to the world probably my favorite christmas song like who by dad it's me your son not joy to the world uh by uh what's that rock band that the joy of the world that was before your time anyway no the christmas joy to the world yeah no okay what's your favorite christmas movie uh i'd have to be it's a wonderful life um yeah it's just such a great it's you know you have to sit through i was just talking to my sister about this and my my nephew it's tough because you got to sit through the part of uncle billy uh losing the money and potter taking it and some of the tough parts but that's what makes it so amazing at the end uh yeah right i mean without that without and i think that's true in our own lives you know you go through stuff but then when you come out the other side it makes it that much more amazing right yeah no it's it's am i am i letting you down no you're good i don't know how to do these little guys okay we'll hold up the tray when we're done too so you can see oh okay um all right next question am i uh from alexandra oh no alexander dianici i'm so sorry if i said that wrong um is your daughter half filipina this comes up in every life i am half filipina yes my wife is filipina so so my wife so my daughter's half filipina yeah because i'm not filipino or filipino otherwise she'd be whole filipino yes you probably knew that though yeah i feel like that comes up a lot okay um at oh man condor snipe what is the best dad advice you've ever gotten nah i mean and i share this with a lot of people over the years is um i don't know that i hadn't necessarily got it but i just kind of picked up on it was cherishing the moments when when you have them because they're so uh yeah they're they're here and they're gone right i mean you were i was holding you at the hospital and here you are here i am i mean the time goes by like that and so think think long term i think thinking long term that's in a lot of the interviews that i've had they asked me and i think probably one of the biggest things i would say is think long term about about your decisions right it's important to how is this going to affect down the road right so before you post stuff i think of that you know it's true i think it's you know we live in a society where it's easy to just put something out there and then ah am i gonna regret this down the road there you go it's good so the cookies i still need the cookies show them my icing skills yeah i think i made the ice it's my fault i made the icing too thick i think so here we go first that's our cookies and then these are ones i did earlier little yeah yeah they're the best stuff yes favorite favorite what is your favorite festival what's your favorite festival how about a question something different oh that's my guess three dog night adam thank you there you go joy to the world three dog night adam comes through okay um next question we're gonna ask more questions should i do more cookies no i think that's that okay more real quick maybe we'll do some more questions let me look at the time oh yeah we're doing great okay um so where's my tuition money yeah the same place my tuition money was when i was in college it was non-existent okay uh okay what is oh no we already did that one at jbz and asked what is your favorite holiday memory as a kid uh i would say probably just waking up in the morning i have uh i'm one of eight kids i think i'm sorry it's just like christmas i got you i just was picturing like you every day that's the best part of my day i'm waking up morning it's a new day uh um so i'm one of eight kids and i'm number seven and i have two brothers just above me um and my brother joe would always get up at four in the morning at christmas and come and wake don and i up and we'd we we slept downstairs and we run upstairs to check out the gifts so that was pretty fun that is um and then i i was telling you this memory which i think is really cool my uh my oldest sister mary um she's 12 years older than me and i remember i don't know if she remembers this or not but i remember i was probably eight or so and i remember it had snowed and a lot of people had put up christmas lights and i remember her asking me to go for a walk with her just around the block and i remember as a kid thinking what's the purpose of not even doing that we weren't really going anywhere we were just going for a walk and just enjoying the beauty and i think that's the first time i remember actually doing something just for just enjoying the moment you know and as you get older it's important to stop and smell the roses because they're gone they're gone so quick so anyway nice yeah um and then that same so jbz also asked what's your favorite memory for when kyle and i were little waking you guys up funny you guys okay i think kyle and i would stay up like no okay i don't know yeah i liked waking you guys up and spending time with you guys and um snow days you know snow days i made sure i i called in and i would get grief from work uh for that but i think again you know the time is so short you got to take advantage of those opportunities and even if people when i came into work ah you could have made it in yeah i could have made it in but i don't want to hang out with my kiddos so yeah i made sure to do that nice i saw someone on the chat ask um what is your favorite holiday dish earlier food that's on the table ah i don't know i like a lot of dishes i like ham i like mashed potatoes i like uh even green bean casserole i was thinking to show how to make that because it's a fairly easy thing to make um if you don't know how to cook and you got to show up at a party uh yeah it's a it's a fairly simple dish to make are christmas dishes and thanksgiving is there really a difference between thanksgiving or christmas dishes not in our house i think i don't know no i it would be nice to know this is officially a christmas dish this is officially a thanksgiving dish boop they just we kind of blended them yeah no most people do you guys blend your thanksgiving christmas all that dishes um wanting to learn how to make the green bean casserole we'll do that and i'll take one more from the chat before we jump into this does that sound good before we jump into oh yeah yeah yeah we don't want to bore you so hopefully no this is great i just am out of cookies um someone asked and i lost it i lost it oh what was your favorite of the claymation christmas movies like the earth santa claus oh we used to watch all of them shoot i don't know if i had to you put me on the spot here with that i liked all of them you know that you know when uh when i was a kid you had to wait for rudolph to come out and you had your one chance to watch rudolph now you can you know you have the dvd or you pull it up and you can watch it anytime streaming yeah so you couldn't miss the opportunity so we'd always watch all of those yeah someone just said island of misfit toys yeah yeah with rudolph that's a classic right that is good with herbie and wanting to be a dentist oh that's right that feels really good and i like uh what's the one the year without a santa claus yeah that's the one with my heat miser yep that's my favorite that's a classic too so for sure okay okay one foot in front of the other cool okay all right let's jump into your reading so are we gonna yeah up do you have any more questions do you want any more questions or do you want to if we have more time at the end that's what i'm thinking so let's go and read and then if you have more questions at the end we can do you like my sweater too by the way i got all dressed up for you okay i'm gonna hop off screen and i'm gonna show you your guys's pictures oh before we get started thank you to everybody that submitted your pictures that was really moving to see how much time and effort yeah you guys are awesome you know and we're reading the chats but you know since we're fairly new to this this live thing we're you know trying to make sure we got everything straight and i want to reply but you guys are so kind um i i just love it how how kind you are to each other so and how kind you are to us too yeah um let's keep that going you know the world needs that especially now you know this year year's been tough um so let's keep it going love it love to be a part of that just riding the wave right for sure all right without further ado you guys pictures and twist the night before christmas close the night before christmas the sweater is outstanding is that standing out or outstanding i need a laugh track oh i'm sorry i'm focused over here all right i'm ready when you are yeah well we can just put up the first picture right okay nice okay twas the night before christmas by clement c moore this is actually written in 1822.

you ain't 25 tonight oh i bet he has more he's got his uh he's got huntington here watching him who he of course just signed to sign to so yeah should be a good game for him to show out and show him what he's made of again we're just i believe just over a minute away from starting this match up tonight been in 30 seconds actually both coaches are talking to their teams here uh the five starters from either team are on the bench sitting down and i mean north decatur they have a new coach this year uh knobby stepped down as coach and i'm curious to see just how experienced their new coach is i've heard good things about him he was previously their jv coach last year i believe and uh yeah we'll see we'll see what happens here buzzer should be ringing any time here and we should be getting down to the national anthem and uh get down to the announcements and here we go we'll see you here in just a few moments positive you [Music] uh the national anthem has just been played and we are getting ready to meet the starting lineup for the north decatur chargers for the chargers carver carson palmer and the other four senior number 33 connor and connor messer those are the five starters for the north decatur chargers yeah trent gauch's not starting yeah actually hurt [Music] and here we go just about ready for tip-off officials get on the court both teams out on the court and we're about to ready to get this game underway now it appears we have carson parmer and colin cummer tipping today curious to see who will win this tip as they both appear to be about the same height and let's get this match-up underway whistle blows and here we go tips up and calm comer tips it back to walters for the pirates and the pirates looking to just run some motion here at the start see if they can get anything open um you know they've been one to run motion all year that's a big part of stacey myers uh forte there they really like that motion sparks drives in excellent drive by him wasn't it that was solid ran the baseline bucker hide for the chargers has the ball guarded by stanley dishes it down low to knobby knobby looking to get something going but cummer really has tight defense on him chargers just swinging the ball around right now just looking for the open shot there's a little bit of a push off no a blocking foul called on lane sparks quick foul to pick up for sparks as we're not even a minute into this game he's gonna have to be cautious here going on into the end of the first and second quarter pirates once again just on the chargers very tight here not letting them really get an inch of space on him that's something i'm sure they work on constantly they i mean we've always been a solid defensive team there's just no doubt about it that we can stop the chargers tonight anywhere they go and there's nob he goes up for the two points but it's rebounded by cummer swung out to sparks down the court got a foul sparks yep draws the foul what a good play by sparks as he's come out to a quick roll on this one number five sparks will shoot two from the line here and here goes spark says he'll line up for two shots first one rolls around the rim and goes in pirates now take a 3-0 lead with just over a minute into this first quarter sparks up and in for the second one chargers get it out quickly mucker height for the chargers dribbling up top passes it to parmer palmer down and in but misses the pass to messer uh that's just something the chargers should probably work on if they want to stay into this game they had a good look down there but they just couldn't put the pass on point pirates just looking to swing the ball again once swing the ball around once more until they get an open shot here and cummer passes up an open shot over to dyer in the corner dire to cummer again and here goes sparks has an open shot passes it up for the cut but walters does not handle the ball properly and loses it the charger yeah it was a good look the chargers now have a chance to get back into this game here they're only down 4-0 with uh two minutes into this first quarter but they really haven't shown any signs of getting anywhere close to the basket yet the closest thing they've had so far was a bounce pass down to messer that of course went out of bounds and there's a steal by sparks a little bit of a careless pass sparks and it's in layup there's two points for sparks that matchup was just not fair no it was not really don't have anyone to shut him down do they and there's another steal by the chargers getting careless and boom shakalaka two minutes and 30 seconds into this matchup i told you they ain't going to be able to stop my thing i mean we've come out to a hot start you just yammed one down on them what is that they have two turnovers and two minutes and 30 seconds into the game sparks has all our eight points and i think you called it 25 that might be a little bit of a little bit of a lower understatement yeah understatement we'll see i think he can probably get more than that if he keeps doing what he's doing [Laughter] and the chargers just getting a little careless with their passes here uh just and here goes the pirates putting some pressure on the chargers looking to just improve their lead even more little kids kind of got some handles yeah mucker height he does chargers down low with the ball that's messer who has it messer dishes out to his brother connor messer uh and now mucker high just back with the ball at the top of the key there's another ball batted down by sparks and he's going to go into transition gets the easy laying with the right hand for sparks already 10 points for the pirates 10 points for sparks what a night here we go the chargers looking to get something going as they haven't gotten anything so far i think sparks has three steals already yeah he does and he's got one foul on him and ten points not much else you can ask for there and that'll be a foul on walters uh apparently got too far into him there and mucker hyde gets the ball inbounded to him looking for the open man and there's an offensive on messer [Applause] just kind of butted up against stanley a little too hard there maybe swung his arm a little bit and they decided to call an offensive second save into the game for the chargers xavier adams checks in for the chargers one of their taller players sparks looking to share the wealth a little bit here passing it around into stanley there's an easy two for stanley and the pirates ball movement has been key so far i know we've gotten three fast or six fast break points but our other points have all been off the off the ball movement here we go chargers still looking for something i'm sure they're going to take anything they can get at this point as they're trailing 12th with already four minutes into this game uh they haven't been there there's a three-pointer by shorty oh nope come on bring the ball off the court yep dishes it to sparks sparks back out to come come for the three-pointer and it's in cummer from downtown 15-0 pirates that was almost volleyball that was that was a pull-up right there if i've ever seen one is that 15-0 three minutes and 30 seconds to go in the first and you have to be proud with the way the pirates are playing right now if you're their coach they've come out to a hot start and stanley jumps the gun and i think well's on walters yeah well appears walters got into him too much when he was trying to go up with it and we'll see if the chargers can put themselves on the board here if i was on brendan yep the line for the chargers yeah we'll see if the chargers can get themselves on the board here uh you get two free shots at this so i mean you would hope at least one of them can go in and there's there's the chargers on the board with one point fifteen to one pirates and adams will hope to make this next free throw to cut the chargers uh deficit down to 13.

very cool i didn't know that now you do twas the night before christmas when all through the house not a creature was stirring not even a mouse we didn't get a picture of a mouse the stockings were hung by the chimney with care in hopes that saint nicholas soon would be there oh sorry i'll go back yes landon drew some stockings nice the children were nestled all snug in their beds while visions of sugar plums danced in their heads and mama in her kerchief and i in my cap had just settled down for a long winter's nap oh no that's so nice i don't think i saw that one very nice look at the sugar plums and candies in their heads lots of details you know a little train down there when out on the lawn there rose such a clatter i sprang from my bed to see what was the matter nice good job kaden away to the window i flew like a flash tore open the shutters and threw up the sash more rapid than eagles his coursers they came and he whistled and shouted and called them by name what that's a different one oh it is now dasher now dancer now prancer and vixen on comet on cupid on dawn this one says donder is it donder and blitzen or donner wait hold on let's make sure because we flew through three people oh uh the more it's missing that's missing a page it is it is oh it is i got you okay here are you gonna read it i can read that part i'll read when out on the lawn there arose such a clatter i sprang from the bed to see what was the matter i read that nope next one the moon [Laughter] i'm just kidding we got it the moon on the breast of the new fallen snow gave the luster of midday to objects below when what to my wondering eyes should appear but a miniature sleigh and a tiny reindeer there you go am i good now and then the next page oh okay with a little old driver so lively and quick i knew in a moment it must be saint nick more rapid than eagles his courses coursers they came and he whistled and shouted and called them by name perfect now oh that's anything about are we good i think so i don't know what i'm saying okay now dasher now dancer now prancer and vixen on comet on cupid on donner and blitzen no wonder this book was on sales missing pages i got such a bargain to the top of the porch to the top of the wall now dash away dash away dash away all check it out oh my goodness that's amazing nice yeah now i lost where i was as dry leaves before the wild hurricane fly when they meet with an obstacle mount to the sky so up to the house top the coursers they flew with sleigh full of toys and saint nicholas too nice nice job riley and then in the twinkling i heard on the roof the prancing and pawing of each little hoof as i drew in my head and was turning around down the chimney saint nicholas came with a bound take a [Laughter] he was dressed all in fur from his head to his foot and his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot nice yeah the snow in the background too people are so talented a bundle of toys he had flung on his back and he looked like a peddler just opening his pack his eyes how they twinkled so sweet right oh nice yeah very cool look at that that's incredible his eyes how they twinkled his dimples how merry his cheeks were like roses his nose like a cherry his droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow and the beard on his chin was as white as the snow it's nice i think they said it's on oak that's really like they painted on oak really oh yeah i can see the wood grain okay oh my goodness look at that am i supposed to keep reading yes what did i read last his draw little mouse here on the stump was drawn up like a bow yeah i already said that sorry the stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth and the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath he had a broad face and a little round belly that shook when he laughed like a bowl full of jelly he was chubby and plump a right jolly old elf and i laughed when i saw him in spite of myself who's that old guy on the right there very nice that looks like a classic cartoon there doesn't it yeah a wink of his eye and a twist of his head soon gave me to know i had nothing to dread one more of you oh nice you know sweet oh i'm wearing my shirt too very cool gotta pay attention to where i'm at he spoke not a word but went straight to his work and filled all the stockings then turned with a jerk and laying his finger aside of his nose and giving a nod of the chimney he wrote nice oh it's nice also there was oh that's lauren it is lauren yeah there's one more right before too oh wow santa i think recording himself wasn't nice all right he sprang to his sleigh to his team gave a whistle and away they all flew like the down of a thistle i'm checking the page numbers but i heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight merry christmas to all and to all a good night there we go we did it we made it so cool thank you guys so um and just so you know we did this on on tuesday i realized it's kind of an odd day you know we would normally do it um but we wanted to you know free up christmas and you know in case you had something going on i realized it's a tough year again so um but we didn't want to assume so we wanted to make sure that um you know make it flexible for you guys yeah yeah so do we want to answer any more questions was there anything else or i can take two i'm looking at the time okay i can take two more from the chat maybe and see and i can oh well wait for people to pop up ryan if you see any two that come from the chat you think would be good for now i'll go from instagram too yeah it's wednesday today too that's true for in some places it would be that like that um okay ellie asked um what are some good dad gifts i need tips desperately for for me i depends on how old the dad is i guess um from for me that uh you know gift cards uh to lowe's it was always good um to hardware stores because you you know it's a it's a yeah so that way i get to pick what i want so that sounds you know might sound a little uh i don't know it's not as exciting because you can't really surprise somebody i guess with a gift card but boy it sure is practical so yeah oh you didn't have a christmas dad joke that's okay i used them all up all gone from this year i'm looking for childhood traditions that you did as a kid i guess you already talked about that the traditions oh i i do gotta share it kind of a funny story so we used to go to midnight mass and you know i know this and uh yeah as a kid you know you're excited about about christmas and we would stay up late and we're sitting there and we had to make it to midnight now so in order to get a seat you'd have to go there you know two hours early and so i'm already sitting there tired bored doing anything i can with my brothers and stuff and i'm sitting there and i remember my head just i couldn't keep my and you know kept falling back and hitting the pew and it would echo throughout the church so anyway that's not that's not a fond memory but it is a memory yeah is that a tradition yeah now i do yeah now i make sure to do that now nice let's see um oh yeah why did you create this channel someone asked that here and then that was also on instagram oh okay yeah um you've shared i've shared this a lot before but yeah i you know i want to be able to empower people i i you know i think uh what can might seem to seem intimidating um you know if you if you try it then maybe you you know you conquer that and then you can go on and do bigger and better things um and i also wanted you know i was trying to create a resource uh that i could have used when i was younger um and i thought it'd be kind of a one-stop shop where you could come and learn how to tie a tie but also learn some stuff around the house and stuff you know on your car and then we are gonna go camping you know that's coming we're gonna go camping we're gonna go fishing uh got lots of lots of cool things happening in the new year i just can't tell you yeah so but anyway so there are some cool things that are right around the corner yeah cool was that two questions think we're good i think that's good yeah awesome um we want to be respectful of your time you know i could probably hang out and chat with myself but um do you have any last words this is a good thing any last words for people for this christmas as a reference i should have given you time to think about that yeah what kind of wisdom got a little bit about this yeah yeah i mean i i think we're all kind of ready ready to see 2020 in the rearview mirror so um and i think i do go back to to you know a long-term perspective on things because um you know i've uh my actual job that i've done for almost 30 years was sales and in sales it's uh you know you can ride the wave of the high and then the lows and then the highs and then the lows and over the years i just learned to you know try to try to not get too high and not get too low because it's temporary you know uh life life tends to work that way where it's temporary and you know you get through it although this year this temporary thing has lasted a long time so i think we're all ready to move on right for sure well that and you also mentioned like during the holidays to keeping traditions going even if you might not feel like it like it's doing something really small even like putting on a hat yeah i think it is important to you know try to keep those traditions going i think it's important when you were little we always got our christmas tree the day after thanksgiving and you know sometimes you might not feel like it but you know um pretty soon you get closer and closer to christmas and then you never did anything and then you just treat it like another day i think it's important to stop and smell the roses along the way right make sure as you go through the year kind of breaks up the year and you got something to look forward to and something to look forward to and yeah yeah i think that's important cool so awesome maybe a baby next year no no not for you that's not for me all right what are you saying huh it was no not you oh come on i wasn't saying that on that note i think that's about it christmas yeah our heart goes out to you yeah merry christmas i hope everybody's doing okay you know i shared that in my last video that you know that there's a lot of good at this time but there's a lot of you know it can affect people in a different different ways too so we sincerely do care about you and we pray for you and hope hope you're doing okay and looking forward to i we don't know so we will get back to a regular routine here coming up in 2021 of tool tuesdays and you know we thought we'd have some fun with christmas because you do gotta stop you know stop and take time to enjoy some of this uh stuff that's happening around you so um yeah so i guess we'll end with that so thank you so much thanks for joining everybody you guys are awesome i can't say enough about how amazing you are and anytime i have any of these interviews i try to shout you out because uh you know i it's sometimes it's hard to process how amazing you guys are and how good you've been to us and how supportive um yeah so everyone's been really kind yeah and hopefully you understand we want to we want to be able to give back you know if given the opportunity we're going to do whatever we can as he bricks it off the back of the board and kai dyer grabs the rebound for the pirates there's an oh cummer takes an open look off knobby's hands and into uh reed messer's hands sparks tips the ball walters has it here we go ball to comer and there's a blocking foul by the chargers number 27 or 21 excuse me that's teal key for the chargers with the foul ball inbounded to walters on the right side corner ball pushed down to stanley walters is there for the rebound but knocks the ball out of bounds fires are getting a little sloppy here [Applause] teoki has the ball for the chargers back to knobby chargers just looking for an open shot here and messer takes a three-pointer and that's up and in 15-4 pirates with two minutes and 40 seconds left in this quarter pirates swinging the ball around stanley open for the cut down low gets the two points for the pirates says from sparks assisted by sparks there and sparks has just been finding that open lane all day that was a good backdoor by stanley it was he made a good cut just got himself wide open i think addison barnes pettit's coming to the game now yeah it appears he's getting ready to check in and there's an illegal moving screen by the chargers number eleven and pettit will check in for the pirates and i believe stanley has two fouls so that's probably why he's coming out a freshman for the pirates baldish down low sparks tries to stay strong with it and they call a foul [Applause] sparks appeared to be doing nothing but going for the ball there and they had to bail him out and call foul here we go we'll come into the game for greensburg as the pirates now have two players in foul trouble stanley and sparks um and now the chargers will probably look to get something moving here with the lineup not not suited for the pirates here a lot of ball movement going on by the chargers right now not much action going on but just swinging the ball around looking for something here and there's a ball tipped out by walters he did good seeing that pass coming in and just knocked it out of bounds he did what he had to do with it yep little confusion there as to who's taking it out i believe and just throws it over and if pettit would have been aware he could have snagged that chargers not not really caring about how much time's on the clock they're just looking for some points here all right stringer guards teal key but teoki finds a way around him that's a good move by toking great ball movement by the pirates here [Music] another three for calmer man he's just an excellent shooter from outside 20 to six pirates with 40 seconds left in the first quarter stringer slits a little bit getting out to tealkey and tealkey off target with that three-pointer and here comes stanley inn for the pirates and knobby in for the chargers stanley back in the game good to see him out here uh hopefully he can't or doesn't pick up any more fouls about 30 seconds so i think cummer's just going to stay here at the top of the key yeah i'm hired to look for this last shot here the ball gets swung over to dyer now you're just looking for probably something down low here if the pirates can find an open cut i'm sure their coach wants them to get just a nice open two-pointer as cummer gets fouled there goes up strong with it they just can't stay off-comer you have to guard him tightly or else he's just gonna shoot it in your face so after these free throws they have seven seconds so i think what they're gonna do is push everybody back so that we can stop them from having a fast break or something yeah i would agree there uh casey misses his free throw pirates just need to stop the chargers here and cummer's gonna sink these free throws i bet he's already got one in here we go here comes the second free throw attempt for cummer hit the first one and that just rattles around the basket uh 21-6 pirates lead three seconds yep he that was a good drive of a mucker hide that was he just uses his speed to his advantage there just got right in there [Music] and if you're the pirates you just gotta make sure you stop the chargers push here if they have one um a big thing for them to do is just play as tight a defense as possible here and the pirates just need to keep pushing their lead up hopefully we can keep sparks and stanley in the game who are both in foul trouble i i bet we can if we just kind of slack off a little bit and don't have as much intensity here but once again i really feel like the pirates can push away with this lead here it's 21-8 the pirates lead by 13.

and we're getting ready to get back into action here [Laughter] and there's the buzzer for the second quarter to begin it'll be charger basketball to begin the second quarter chargers basketball they will start with it here in the second quarter as they just put up a little lay up there that got him two points looks like connor linkmeyer is in for a north decatur yeah and muckerheight is pressured full court by cummer right now comer obviously looking for the steal here pirates up in adam right now guarding the chargers as tightly as possible not letting them get an inch of space or a shot and there's parmer with the ball now mucker height has it mucker hyde there's a tip by dyer and stringer picks up the ball stringer to comer cummer dishes it to pet it pet it to cummer once again and here we go the ball swung over to the other wing to dire they're just going around the so they can find an opening pirate's just looking for the open cut open shot opened something here as they were very skilled in moving the ball around it's one of their strong suits gets it down to the post pedic goes up and there's two points for the pirates you know for such a young player that was such a great move using his body and all to get in there for the two points he's just such a big boy he is he's being refreshed got some height to him and i'm sure he'll put on a ton of ton of weight here as he gets older let's see six four and a freshman there's a lot of room for improvement there uh as navi spins and gets the two points for the chargers here dyer goes in gets it stuffed and the chargers now have the ball chargers swinging around hoping to get another two or three points here and there's a floater by palmer but it goes over the rim dire in transition for the pirates pet it outside skip past the stringer long pass stringer and there's an oh three pointer just off target for uh cummer there can't blame him for taking that shot as he was two for two prior knobby for three and it's up in it north decatur brought it back in a 10-point game and here comes sparks and walters back in for the pirates you know the pirates they just need to stop uh stop the shot uh that's basically their biggest problem right now is the charger shooting from outside and here we go back to the action parts pirates are up 23 to 13 with five minutes and 45 seconds left in this half it's like cummer's gonna take the ball out and here we go back underway comer into sparks spark's fresh in this game uh he's been sitting for a little bit as he got into foul trouble if you're just tuning in and there goes yes there goes walters with the two points beautiful assist by stanley just right into the pocket of walters there as much loses the ball and here comes sparks and boom goes the dynamite another dunk from sparks that's two for this game with them [Music] here we go chargers with the ball looking to get something going once again as the pirates have raised their lead to 14 points and the ball is off palmer and the pirates will take control of this of this possession here back in for north decatur here comes reed messer back in for north decatur comer to stringer up up top here stringer back to cummer and the pirates just looking for another basket here to stretch their lead um it appears they might find an open slot here and sparks just pops out for the open three but it's off mark just off the back side of the rim there that would have raised the pirates lead to about 17 points but they missed it knobby drives in walter's straight up and thousand thousand 34 walters be his second team fifth knobby a chance for two points here first one up and down for great walter or dyer turns returns for the pirates and messer returns for the chargers second free throw on target for knobby pirates up 12 here 27 to 15.

dyer goes up off the backboard and then 29 15 pirates just over four minutes left in this half conor mcgregor jumps the gun for that ball and messer goes up and in for the two points sparks up oh commerce finals and here's an open three for sparks that's just a beauty right there that's up and then and here comes the full timeout by the chargers it's wide open through you can't leave them open like that can't beat that can't leave sparks open like that either and the pirates just hitting shots left and right here but the chargers keep trying to sneak back into this game um i mean the pirates just need to stay strong on defense they've had way too many defensive breakdowns so let the chargers get into the paint and let them go up and in with the basket um one thing we can do to prevent that is having better help defense of course it hasn't all been all there tonight and i'm sure we can fix that and turn that around here just a couple of simple simple things to fix and the pirates should be well off with this one here comes the buzzer and the game should be underway here anytime yep here we go back to the action mucker hyde brings the ball up court and here comes the trap by the pirates trying to pressure the chargers but there's an open lane for the chargers it's too easy gotta foul foul message fans ain't happy about that one team it's going 1-1 pirates on the bonus now and here we go comer will look to sync both of these free throws jellyfish and the first one is off target for cummer that's unlike him mucker hyde up the court for the chargers pass it to link meyer link meyer back to palmer and parma goes down knobby dyer straight up trying not to let him get it in but he finds the open basket here we go corner three open for stringer but he passes it up stranger doesn't take it sparks down to comer comer to dire dire to spark sparks with a two foot jump shot and it goes in what a jump shot by sparks as he's really showing out tonight chargers looking to cut down their deficit even more here as it was just down to 11 points pirates hoping to stay strong in this one and keep their lead up though and there's a back cut by mucker height up and in for two points man the pirates just need to figure out their defense here tonight it's not as strong as it should be stringer takes the open three just off mark pirates hoping to not let the chargers into the single digits here muckerheid takes a shot with his foot on the line and adams gets the rebound and there's the travel by adams tough scene for the chargers there as they could have had an easy two points or even three sparks up court with the ball cuts down looking for the open shot and that just golf mark gets his own rebound just off mark once again [Applause] dang that stinks for the pirates there they could add two more points and raise their lead to 13 points chargers hoping to get something moving here uh they're only up to 23 points so far but i'm sure they can get more than that knobby just off target with his three-pointer that was a little to the left stanley with the ball for the pirates sparks with the ball goes to the jump shot off mark and sparks does not appear happy with his jump shot there uh it's just something you can't control sometimes just get her next on 50 seconds until half time yeah just just over 50 well now under 50 seconds and the charger swinging the ball to get it over to knobby for the three-pointer and he syncs it that cuts the chargers deficit down to eight points here we go sparks just holding out trying to waste some time here no pressure by the chargers yet we're down to 10 seconds left here in this half sparks crosses over goes and dries in hard gets the two points for the pirates cummer with the steal goes back up just off mark stanley no foul where's the foul halftime scorer greensboro 36 north decatur 26.
