58 million dollars resulting in that 20 million dollars change are there any questions about that just an accounting requirement so again this is government-wide and then you've seen this pie graph numerous times also when we present the dollars in the classroom analysis you'll see something comparable to this but again it's important to note that this is the the government-wide look at what's happened in gilbert public schools year over year so this particular analysis does include debt service some other other expenses such as depreciation as well as such things as adult education and community school that are not included in the auditor general's report however note that year-over-year our dollars in instruction still has stayed the same 59 percent in instruction and so in comparison last year our dollars in the classroom with the auditor general's report was reported at 61.2 percent so we still seem to be in a very similar situation at the end of 2020 like we were at the end of 2019 so we're expecting that the auditor general's report will also report gilbert public schools favorably so are there any other questions about that all really positive results now again going to that next level where we're going to go into the governmental financials so the governmental balance sheet funds they include the general fund so if you every month we present to you our operating funds roughly that represents what we term here as the general fund it includes debt service bond building and non-major governmental non-major governmental would include classroom site fund our federal funds all those special revenue funds so just to give you an idea what's included in there so we're going to break this out into balance sheet assets liabilities deferred inflows and outflows i think and then show you the ending cash balances so on the governmental assets note the cash increase from 102 102 million up to 111 million that is largely due to the fact that we were able to preserve expense in 2020 in mno to put into the federal funds due to the enrollment stabilization grant so i wanted to make sure that that was clear property tax receivables are standard and then due from governmental entities the 55 million versus the 45 million that is that actually includes the enrollment stabilization grant as well as the fact that in public school districts we are not constrained in spending to cash and all of our federal funds are reimbursement grants which means that we have to spend the cash first and wait for the reimbursement so much of that 55 million dollars is due to that federal reimbursement and then so finally you can see our total asset increase of just about 15 million dollars year over year can you just tell us why is there a difference in the property tax receivable most most of that difference is due to um to timing i believe of when the property tax revenues are received a lot of times i think the other thing that's important here with the property tax receivable that dollar amount i believe represents the amount that we are able to account for during the encumbrance period so we are able to include that amount and then year over year much sometimes the property tax receivable more of the property taxes received during that encumbrance period and versus sometimes more of it was received after the encumbrance period which would account for that difference may i ask a question about that too when we were going through the recession after 2000 what 2008 2010-12 i know there was an issue with people not paying taxes just because of the of the financial things that were going on have we seen any of that during this period of time also actually a large part right why it's i went by yeah because when people don't pay their tax they're aren't able to pay their taxes then that makes a difference and then and then as things change and increase over because that property tax receivable can we hand her a mic oh sorry sorry so the property tax receivable figure is accumulative so each year the district has a levy amount and the collections are applied to the specific levy for which people who owe the taxes are paying and so over time although i don't believe you ever get to 100 you get super close to 100 percent you know a highly technical audit term um super close right um so so that over time um you know after about like a 10-year period you've by by that point you've generally collected everything you're going to collect but there's always a process that that happens down at the county um you know at the assessor's office and the treasurer's office with collections and then assessments change you know depending upon the property tax owners because you can contest what you were assessed at and and so there's always a lot of movement in that in that realm but but a lot of what this relates to is from 10 years ago right and the downturn to the economy at that time and we may see that again um when would it when we when would we catch up with what maybe is happening right now would be down the road that that could happen i i don't i don't know that i could speak to that specifically but but to the prior recession yes correct me if i'm wrong just going to that point generally people pay their property taxes in two installments and we would receive payments associated with those installments if they've not paid their property taxes after a certain amount of time the treasurer issues a tax sale the house can get leaned and they'll collect it through a third party we would then receive it so there may be some but almost everything you're going to get really within one year because most tax liens do sell but you always can have little bits here and there that trickle like you said but most of it and to your point mr jetty during the downturn these numbers were much bigger because we had to wait for tax liens to sell to collect those funds and if i if i could um although it looks like perhaps your asset decreased which would normally be maybe something that we we view as less positive it's actually a better position that you have less that you're waiting on people to pay so it's actually an improvement um if you think about it in those terms but you're absolutely right about the lean process and and that being because it's an asset for assets we're getting cash instead of receivable so the cash is in hand then moving into the governmental liabilities you can see the payables up there primarily my guess is primarily due to all the construction projects so remember that that payable is as of june 30 even though we have the incumbents period and we have through august to continue to pay those invoices and then the bond and bond interest payable generally i believe that that final payment is due july 1st so that's recorded as a liability the 12 million dollars primarily due to other funds that does represent i believe the federal dollars that we're waiting to receive and then finally note the tans so if you remember this was a year and a half ago now where we did borrow the tax anticipation notes due to trying to hedge against interest charges associated with cash flow and the intent of that particular tan was to have it paid off in may due to some accounting issues and and delays in how that payment occurred that's why it's still showing as a liability so i just want to make sure that that was clear the final payment that was recorded at the county level not that we paid it back but the final payment recorded at the county level was made in september so i just want to make sure that was clear so you can see that the total liabilities have increased slightly over last year and miss bets i think that shows up really in our cash line we have we have an extra you know 9.6 million dollars in cash year-over-year but we have a liability that in timing we will be paying off with that so when you consider that our cash position hasn't changed as much as i mean is it we'd always rather have cash in hand but it really hasn't changed as much as it would otherwise indicate because of that liability okay any other questions on that before i move on okay so the governmental deferred inflows of resources so the unavailable revenues that represents the tax collections that have actually occurred between uh september 1st and december 31st those are not they're not available to offset expenditures for um for the prior year and then the under intergovernmental unavailable revenues i am not quite sure what that is specific to do you remember at all oh it's your rate it's it's e-rate monies that you're due that did not come in within the first 60 days after june 30th so essentially it's it's a receivable to you it's reflected as a receivable but it's and similar to the property taxes the you'll note that the the decrease in property tax receivable is very consistent with the decrease in the unavailable revenues for property taxes so they they kind of work in tandem similarly on the intergovernmental what that is is that it's real specific to um like 90 of that amount is specifically related to an e-rate program because there were some um hiccups on the accounting side with the receipt of the e-rate monies that was that were owed by the federal government to the district and those have since come in yes they have so yeah okay thank you and then finally governmental funds the cash balances so we talk about budget balance carry forward and and budget balance which represents what we are allowed to spend and that's really related to maintenance and operations and unrestricted capital not to governmental funds so i want to make sure that you're aware this is all governmental funds cash balances grouped together so we do not have 112 million dollars available to spend so i just want that that to be clear but it does include you know it includes all of the debt service fund includes the maintenance operations fund all those special revenue funds are all reflected here so i wanted to make sure that everyone was aware of that so that truly represents our total cash balance but it's important that we have a cash balance just because of things that could go wrong in the future correct it also helps us to manage the property tax levy against our taxpayers where we don't if we don't incur interest charges it actually minimizes how much we have to levy against our local taxpayers i just wanted to add those student accounts that now they're asking us to put into this is those are not under our control those are under the control of the students that's correct and they make those decisions so that's um you know something part of that 112 million okay so other considerations so revenue comparison since we often talk about maintenance operations under capital i thought it was important that we remind you now coming down another level and getting to the details of maintenance and operations and unrestricted capital we are group grouping the two together even though they are separately accounted for in two separate funds we have control over how they're allocated between the two funds but they're still levied um the same and they come in in a group whether it's state revenues or whether it's property tax revenues it all comes really in one bucket and we decide how they're distributed by our adopted budget between understood capital and m l in addition i wanted to share our compensated absences and then the the details about the tax anticipation notes which i shared a little bit so this is revenues by source emino and unrestricted capital so you can see that our 2019 revenue was 225 million and our fiscal year 2020 revenue was 242 million that roughly 15 16 million dollar increase was due to the governor's 20 by 20.

wait until we do that we're actually going to start the calling to order the business uh the board of finance meeting the first thing i need to do is that i'm going to be declaring that the board of education as a whole will constitute the board of finance first item up then would be to elect a president of the board of finance nominations are open we don't have taught here anymore oh you mean me [Laughter] i was hoping to get out of it any other nominations motion and second to elect me i guess is the president of the board of finance all in favor say aye aye opposed so we have that was next we need to elect a board of fine secretary to the board of finance sir motion and second to nominate to elect matt as the secretary of the board of finance all in favor say aye aye opposed all right now the report on investments and review the investment policy by dr q so as part of the legal requirements that we have to meet for the board of finance meeting one of them is to look at the yearly investments and our investment policy last year i spoke on this we do not have an investment policy that is something that originally kind of gave to todd a little bit to work on uh we just never got anywhere with it so that'll probably be something that we'll need to look at doing as far as the policy is concerned uh as far as investments the only thing that we receive back in return is just interest from our money that sits in our bank accounts and so this shows you what that looks historically the rate of interest this year varied from 1.39 to 0.2 i actually got put i think it was back in july kind of when things were happening and interest was starting to really decrease i to talk to the bank and we came to an agreement to put a floor level on there and that floor level was to the point two percent so it's not going to go any lower than that for right now that they said we'll they'll reevaluate every year but you can see this year for 2020 the total amount of interest earned was about 58 000 and then you can compare that 2019 was a pretty good year 2018 was a decent year but we've had years that we've hardly earned any interest and that's all dependent on how much money is in the bank and what the rate is at that time and so it varies from month to month and so our total amount of interest that we earned for 2020 was any questions with that money in the bank is all money that's in a transactional state let's move on to the 2020 financial report though okay so these another requirement then is to this is something just within the past two years is to give kind of a financial report on uh the past year so we're kind of looking at 2020 maybe looking a little ahead in the 21 but we'll go over some things here that are required as part of the report and so uh we can kind of skip through some of those uh beginning slides one of the things that we'll start off with here is what is our budget for 2021.

i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all like to welcome you and those of you watching on social media welcome to you as well future board members february 9th and 23rd here at 6pm and on march 9th here at 6pm we have no revisions to the agenda so we'll move on to public record recognition we have a recommendation to approve a 52.30 donation for southfield elementary from the box top for education for student use we also have a recommendation to approve the donation of a qriket machine cartridges and storage container from megan henderson for southwood elementary estimated value 475 based on new and used pricing to accept the donations all in favor say aye student recognition or school recognition i guess yeah so we'll start out uh mr mcdaniel is here um as our principal representation tonight and he has several things he wants to share sure absolutely i want to start off with elita douglas she's a 12th grader and she advanced out of regionals and made it to the girls state wrestling finals and on january 15th she competed at hamilton heights high school wrestled against the top female wrestlers in the state and ended up with an eighth place finish so very proud of her congratulations to her southern high school is also proud to announce we've received another exemplary behavior report from the ihsaa one of the game officials writes the exemplary behavior report is a great tool to recognize student athletes as a basketball official i feel it is very important to look for the positive aspects of athletic competition it was obvious that the southwood coaching staff emphasized sportsmanship within their program this young lady elena weiner was a joy to officiate tonight she always had a smile on her face and displayed outstanding sportsmanship on the court her positive attitude was noticeable amongst the officiating crew and so i just want to say this is a real testament to the work that coach norman is doing with the kids playing very hard for him and so in fact going to go see him tonight against northfield in a little bit but it never gets old to receive those things or behavior reports from the ihs delay also a staff member passed on a message to me and wanted to recognize mrs warford she's a special education aide in the building with us and um so we just want to recognize her contributions uh this year she's gone above and beyond in her job responsibilities in fact given some staff absences she's worked hard to make sure teacher situations have been taken care of she has maintained the daily schedule of reading accommodations for students on iep made photocopies for students and has been in communication with classroom teachers when absent so we're really thankful for her it's been it's been great and want to talk about connor rich friday would have been the 22nd uh our voice traveled up to tippecanoe valley for basketball and so he achieved his 1000th point on friday so an awesome awesome thing for him and so really really really excited about that from personal perspective i want to talk about uh just the other day last friday i got back from a covent jail but in coming back i was really taken aback by how many kids said hey welcome back glad you're back and so i think that speaks to kind of the culture that we have at southwood i think maybe my former role as the assistant principal when i was in discipline in attendance i probably wouldn't have received i'm really really thankful for that i'd like to add on to what mr mcgamer said as far as mrs warford you know we typically um in the past have done the staff spotlights of course because of code we decided not to do that and so we have some other ones that are um actually saying which is interesting that say well where is that where you sign up i think chris saw something or something was given to him like where do we do that we're not doing it right now but we ask the men to go ahead and just put them on the staff recognition and so we appreciate those people and and to recognize those people that are doing outstanding things so thank you mr reed and if you want to go ahead and go you're welcome to go so you can get to your okay when we were touring southward the other day on the board going through the gym there uh the insider coach snyder we know each other and he said i just want to tell you this is a great school he's retiring well ten bucks is ten bucks so uh but none of us can be replicated so that's how you say that all right um so thank you mr mcdaniel we'll go on uh mr snyder has some things here first of all congratulations to mr roger votel denny crack from the urbana lions club came to honor mr roger rotal and his students for all they have done over the past years to help out the urban alliance club mr craft made the comment that they always ask mr goldball for a couple students to come help the students come and mr votock comes to stay and help out right along with the students mr vote hall was presented with the wp woods fellowship which is the highest honor bestowed by the lions indiana foundation so congratulations to mr votel and just to point out mr votel is the key club sponsor which is part of qantas honest does great work so we're glad that that works out also there are a lot of things here i don't know if i'll read all of this but back on this is from mr schneider july 9th 13 norfolk our students competed in the scholastics national art and writing competition with 40 pieces of artwork scholastics no not the book order company but the name is a well-known art competition for students grades 9 7 through 12.

elevate and showcase and celebrate this rich african-american literature writings poetry do you know who was the very first african-american writer in this country in this part of the world no i don't well she was writing before the country even was started phyllis wheatley oh phyllis wheatley of course yes she was a poet and today we are going to be celebrating poetry in so many different forms and i just want us to be mindful that phyllis wheatley she started in the effort to bring poetry to the masses in a space where she wasn't even supposed to be able to read and write incredible incredible what a story i love it and we're going all the way to the present day with the inspiration of the 22 year old inaugural poet amanda gorman oh give me kills you're giving me chills so you show i do with this song how beautiful it feels like a prayer i call it morning mantra and um i wrote the lyrics after um another great black icon left as kobe it seemed really appropriate to talk about you know it's very hard to get up when it's hard you know but we do it anyways and so i sing this to myself every day wow but i believe in starting spaces with it because i do feel like it it breathes air into the room in ways that not a lot of thrones can wow beautiful so if this will remove ourselves from the stream and then let metalli just uh take over um and everyone out there is next group is from mossy woods jay and jay janiece and jayani we're so proud of these two students when the year first started both were very leery they weren't quite sure about math but as the year has progressed they are being rock stars they're sharing they're thinking verbally asking to try again if they make a mistake trying harder problems way to go janiece and jayani and also for gigi he um has been a superstar in math she works hard every day asks questions when she doesn't understand offers to support others when they are struggling we are proud of her go gigi and that's gigi grace i found out that grace likes to go by gigi it's a way to go grace gigi and last but not least we have jace jason grade 4 is using oh such an important skill social intelligence many kinds of wrote a poem in the moment sometimes it can take a long time to write a poem but she wrote one in the space of maybe a month i think it took her to write her poem and it was so accurate and important for the time we're living in and she was amazing in presenting it at the age of 22.

i think we're live once again we should be live once again this is kind of a brutal night for technical difficulties damon polk tries to touch it to himself sherwood covers up we apologize i'll say it for the 80th time technical difficulties no that father looked me dead in the air i'm kind of frightened 808 to go period two keune i feel like we haven't said kyun's name in a while i wonder if he took a few after he took the puck off the head yeah he hasn't been on the ice much now dobeck spits it out to kun teddy kun tries to sauce it cross ice and now kune over to fisher aiden fisher will lift it up and out of play spartans will change out not a lot of offensive chances in this game more of like a neutral zone battle seems to be plus springfield's had a good handful but yes all in all not too much a lot of skating [Applause] and now haynes on the four check nothing doing arnold gloves it down to himself and sends it back in arnold throws a little stick into the back of the leg man goes down rest did not see it i think arnold's gonna get away with it but if you go back and look at the tape there's clearly a slash there there was clearly a penalty on arnold there but he's gonna get away with one yeah he showed frustration right there but you're right definitely got away with that slash on the back of the ankle he didn't like the hit previously and let the guy know about it unfortunately west side player in some pain has every right to be mad too [Music] but i did see it spartans get away with one now chris sherwood tries to l hit liu kane's trying to start something up he walks around in front gets a puck on net and there's some physical play going on nero getting into it i think these two have got to go for roughing i mean they're kind of just tangled up too trying to push each other trying to get a little chippy here at olympia ice center spartans down a goal with 701 to go no penalties referees are letting them play it's been a physical hockey game though so it's understandable and as you said letting them play sometimes has its downfalls now nero trying to put a man into the boards he's going to get called sooner or later now luke haynes trying to start something swings it in front sherwood kicks it out arnold a bomb redirected goal alec nero on the redirect 1-1 i was going to say that was a great pass by sherwood great play by chris sherwood yeah i hope they get him for an assist there oh and he's laying west side know about it too kicked it out i think he was just talking to his teammate to be honest with you but a great play by sherwood coach reid very happy with him kicks it out arnold with a bomb that deflected in nero ties it up now i don't want to say anything but coming in i said final score prediction 2-2 goal scorers are going to be narone haynes that was what i said before i left the house and i said sherwood 25 saves now we don't have a shot on goal tally but i'd say he's pretty close to that number probably right now he's probably at about 12 i'd say but you're that guy who predicts a tie you're really i thought yeah there's no ot i thought it would be 2-2 these teams were evenly matched in the shot department last game although west side played better the second half of the hockey game significantly i feel like ever since my days of watching eo hockey west side and el have really been evenly matched teams but there's there wasn't really a game that was really a blowout like there was one game our west side beat us three nothing but that's just when the spartans like had an off night and that's really the only one it was 5'3 to be honest 80 fisher run into it's been taking some elbows to the head now it definitely was 5 30.

are the class of 2025 each year i say that but it's it's it's true every single year um you guys just just keep coming and we i think we're we're ready and we're going to have a really good time next year um and i'm really hopeful that things things get back to normal a little oh mr dara all right good afternoon everyone thank you so much for joining us i am mr davidson i'm the principal of freshman academy at gamer high school and we're here today to talk about what it's going to mean for you to come to denver high school and what you need to do to be ready to come to danbury high school next year even though we're in kind of a crazy year so i have a few guests with me today mrs ondeck one of my school counselors is here i also have miss carlson who's the director of counseling sorry i got a little tech issue and i'm muted all right and uh your counselors are also here too miss harris i believe our final school counselor is having some tech issues but she'll get rolling in a minute so i'm going to try to project my screen and show you my presentation okay it's kind of weird that you guys are the class of 2025 each year i say that but it's it's true every single year you guys [Music] all right sorry about that mr daryl you have a lot of feedback i can hear you let's try again okay so things we're going to talk about today really what are what is the freshman academy what do you need to know for registration what supports we have available for you what extensions are there to support you dr roy is going to talk about the danbury early college opportunity if she makes it and then what's kind of next for for you as incoming freshmen so throughout the presentation if you have a question about a slide that i just talked about we're going to try to answer them all at the end so i have qr codes in the bottom corner of um of each slide so you can scan that with your phone or you can if you're with somebody else and they want to type like while you watch you can enter um your questions and we'll answer them at the end so the freshman academy it's it's kind of a special place at danbury high school it's a little bit separate from everything else and the way we run our freshman academy is it's really a transition program to help you become ninth graders because there's a big difference between eighth grade and ninth grade and it's not fair that we just say hey welcome to danbury high school have fun go get em so we have a transition program in place to help support you to make it to make it a little bit easier for you to transition to ninth grade we have a teamed approach similar to what you may have seen in middle school we have eight teams um each of those eight teams as a has a different team of teachers that work exclusively with those students and we also have counselors that work with those teams as well we have some supports that are only offered to freshmen we have common planning time for our teachers and like i said eight teams and we have college prep classes and we have honors classes that we'll talk about in a little bit my counselors are specifically trained to help you in the transition from eighth grade to ninth grade so that's what our freshman academy is about let's learn a little more about it we have a brand new building it's only a couple years old 26 new classrooms new science labs we have a gym in the bottom locker rooms it's fully air conditioned which is really really nice at the beginning of the year and the end of the year that's called rg building and the majority of your classes at least your freshman classes will be in there maybe maybe some of your electives will not be but all of your core classes will be in the g building so that's what it looks like you can see a science lab kind of a hallway um i think this is miss i don't know it's coach box room right there um just know that it looks a whole lot different now with social distancing and the way we have to do business now but i'm hopeful that next year we can get back to a little more traditional education things you need to know as a student at danbury high school is you need to take a certain number of courses in order to graduate so you have to have 25 credits before you can leave danbury high and that includes english classes social studies classes you need a fine art class elective class you need math science so your counselor will help you plan a schedule each year that puts you in position to meet those 25 credits the thing that you need to know as a student is if you don't get those 25 credits you can't graduate so if you fail a pe class or a health class or your english class you can't graduate until you pass those classes we don't move you on to the next grade we don't move you to the next class you need to pass those classes in order to move on at the end of the four-year experience you have to have 25 credits or more in those specific areas in order to move on uh so what does that really mean for you it means your freshman year um it's kind of prescribed so you're freshman you have to decide whether you want to take college prep or honors english and whatever you choose in english you have to choose the same thing in world studies so your english class and your social studies class have to be the same level you can choose college prep for both of those or you could choose honors for both of those but you cannot choose college prep english and honors world studies so this blue box right here around the outside they have to be the same level okay the same thing is is true for math and science so you can take college prep algebra one but you also have to take college prep biology if you decide you want honors algebra 1 then you take honors biology as well we also have honors algebra 2 for those students who took algebra 1 in middle school so whatever you choose in english you have to choose in social studies and whatever you choose in math you have to choose in biology but you don't have to choose honors across the board and you don't have to choose college prep across the board so if you want to do one thing in english in social studies you can do something different in math and science we also for those students who need additional supports we have reading and math labs that would be in your schedule and those would take the place of some of your other elective classes or possibly one of your core classes we recommend that all freshmen take health and physical education and there are some elective courses that you can take too because we have in our day and you'll see a sample schedule a little bit we have seven classes or seven class periods throughout a two-day rotation right so in our block schedule you can take up to seven classes and you have to decide what you want college proper honors and this is always a question what's the difference how do i know if i say college prep and honors so what you need to know is in college prep those courses are going to prepare you to go to college if you want to so if you take those courses you will be ready to go on to a four a two or a four year college when you're done doesn't mean you have to but you'll be prepared to if you want to our honors courses you're going to learn the same things you're going to learn about the same um things in those classes but they're going to ask you to go deeper they're going to ask you to do more and they're going to ask you to kind of take on a heavier workload so you're going to be responsible for for more on your own that you're not going to be doing in class so the workloads increase they ask you a little bit deeper and do a little bit more in that class as well so electives there's a whole bunch of them there's even more when we get out of freshman year but in freshman year some of them are are not available to you yet because they require some some prerequisites so we have rotc we have art business family consumer science music science theater tech ed and world languages so a sample schedule for you as a as a ninth grader similar to what you probably see now is we have an 8 and a b day so on an a day you may have math you may have health block 2 everybody has a flex period and i'll talk about flex in a few minutes then you may take english and there will be lunch embedded in that block and personal finance may be in block four so notice that these blocks change from block a um from a day to b day so block one block two block three let's try to let miss harris in and dr roy um but that fourth block that one meets every single day so that fourth block is shorter and it meets every single day of the week so that's something to be be prepared for when you get to denver high school so when you go to register we're going to ask you what courses you want to take because i don't want to put everyone in in classes and then say wow mr davis and i didn't really want that class this isn't fair so we ask you to register through powerschool and request classes and then we use those requests to build a schedule so you're going to need the course of study guide and that can be found right on our danbury high school webpage it's also linked in powerschool when you go to register so you'll log into powerschool like you normally would click on class registration and that's when you're going to choose which classes you want to take so you click on the little little pencil over here and decide what you want to take you want to take college prep you want to take english algebra 1 algebra two whatever it may be make sure when you're there you're choosing semester one and semester two we live in a semesterized environment here at danbury high school which means you do the first half of the course semester one and you do the second half of the course semester two um if you're not successful in one of those semesters you don't necessarily have to take the whole course over you have to take just that semester over i don't want anyone to think it's okay to not pass the class because it really puts you behind but we do have some of that built in in case you need some additional supports you do the same thing for electives choose your classes i'm sure you did something similar to this last year and probably the year before so it should be pretty self-explanatory so what do we do to offer support for kids uh like i mentioned before we have a rebounding program and we have a math 180 program for those students who who need additional supports in math and reading we have flex time and i said i would circle back to this flex time is kind of like your team enrichment time but it's a little more structured i think so what you'll do every monday is you'll choose what you're going to do during that flex time for the rest of the week so maybe you say i have a test in math on friday so on thursday i'm going to schedule myself to go see my math teacher for review or maybe i was sick last friday and they need to make up a quiz in english so on tuesday i schedule my english teacher so i can go and take that quiz maybe i just need to go to the library and study so we have study sessions that are available if you wanted to during flex we also have enrichment so if you're passing all your classes and things are going really well we have additional activities that are set up that are kind of extra and fun and enrichment type activities so you could take yoga you could learn how to work in the auto shop we we offer those throughout throughout the school year so if you're passionate classes and you don't need any additional support during flex you can take enrichment things and we have a directed study hall so if if i find a real study hall a normal study hall isn't working for you maybe i put you in a direct study hall where you're up in the level four office with my counselors and myself we have after school tutoring program this this year it's all virtual so we'll see if that's going to continue to maybe get you out of the building so you don't have to be in the building for tutoring after after school next year we have a twilight program which allows you to take the classes you may not have passed first semester before moving on to sophomore year so that you can move on to sophomore year on time we have a credit recovery program that's available typically to sophomores juniors and seniors if they don't pass the class it gives them an opportunity to make that class up and we also have a pretty intensive srbi intervention process to support students academically throughout their school years extensions so what if everything's fine i don't need any supports well you can i always say you can get as far as you want danbury high school with the effort that you put in so we have 26 advanced placement courses only ones available to freshmen unfortunately that is ap computer science principles but once you get the basics out of the way there are endless possibilities in all of those classes they they equal college credit so if if you want to get a head start on college throughout your high school career you can take these courses and get advanced placement credit in college if you score a three or better currently 21 percent of our kids take ap classes and 53 of our minority students take care so that's um just shows that everyone's taking advantage of those ap courses flex like i said those extensions are in there dr roy who joined us a little bit ago is going to talk about the early college opportunity in a few minutes we have honor societies to allow you to kind of expand yourself and push your limits a little bit accelerated summer courses if you want to take geometry over the summer you can certainly do that so you can get a head start on the year following and possibly graduate early if you truly wanted to concap up or bound program we have tons of sports clubs i usually tell the freshmen when i talk to them in the middle schools when you come to denver high school be more than just a student don't just come here to to be involved in academics do something else give back to danbury high school and the community in some other way and there's so many opportunities for you at danbury high school to do that so dr roy i'm going to open this up so you can talk about your early college opportunity hi everybody um i am the director of our early college opportunity that is a partnership with knocked up valley community college where students enrolled in the program are working towards an associate degree in computer information systems while they're still high school students and so you might say well how can i actually do that um and the way that we're able to do that is we partner with noctuc valley community college we partner with the danbury students and business connections and local businesses to help support you um in acquiring the skills you would need to be able to function as somebody utilizing that computer information science degree so basically in order to join students have to apply for a lottery which we will open up on march 1st if you look on the danbury high school website getting closer towards march 1st you'll see that that lottery actually opens up and as long as you fill out the completed application then you're put into the lottery and we're able to accept 60 students into the program so how that affects you as a freshman is one of those electives that mr davidson was talking about would become a class that we take called workplace learning and so the workplace learning course teaches you all the soft skills of business that that's how to make presentations it's how to write professional uh emails letters do professional presentations and working as team members and leaders we have experiences where you get to work with mentors from different industries and you get to get different work experiences we do internships and field trips and those kinds of things to really kind of see what is it that local businesses and in danbury do and is it something that you might want to use in the future obviously um whatever pathway you choose you're probably going to use a computer um in in your profession as you grow up um the first experience that our students typically get to have um is the summer experience it's three days towards the end of august our students come into danbury high school we do some team building we get to follow our schedule check out the building check out the people that work there who are there mr davidson we usually try to find him and have him sign off on things and do scavenger hunts and stuff like that he's particularly tricky to find um but we do get to get to know each other a little bit during the summer first and then as you go through your high school career i work very closely with you to kind of tailor that pathway tailor your course selections and stuff to really meet the goals that you want um before you graduate so if you have any questions you can check out our website and it's been updated so if you just search danbury early college opportunity it might not show up but if you go to the danbury high school website and click on the button there that says deco then you'll be able to find it and if you have any questions certainly uh either call and leave me a message or shoot me an email thank you dr roy so what's next you learned a little bit today we're going to answer a couple questions i see them then i'm coming in on the forum um so what's next so the first step is is seeing you all here today so today is is west side we have rogers park and broadview over the next couple weeks well the next big thing for you guys is 3-1 we have our school fair so what our school fair is all about is you can come in in normal years you can come to dhs and you can walk around you can do a tour and you can find out about all the clubs the uh sports the fun things like that it's a little bit different this year so we're gonna be doing it virtually which i still think is gonna be pretty good so i'll do a similar presentation like this to your parents that night so they can know what do i need to know as a parent of a student that's going to danbury high school you'll learn about the clubs the organizations the other fun things or interesting things that you can do to be involved in in danbury high school the registration opens later that night so you can start choosing the classes that you want that we can use to build your schedule we'll talk to the private parochial schools at night on the 15th and i think i think the registration window closes the 24th but we can keep it open if we have any issues but you guys should be really good at that by now so i'm going to leave this up while we start answering questions if you need to ask a specific one of us a question you can either email us or call us and leave us a message and we'll get back to you because most of us are at home today but we start up school again tomorrow so if you don't enter into the forum question feel free to reach out to us and we'll do our best to answer it so mrs ondeck i believe is taking a look at the the questions if anybody has any other questions add them in now and we will do our best to answer them um mr davidson can i just like pop in really quick you can hi west side so nice to see you my stem kids um and mrs rieffer's global studies kids so i know mr davidson touched based on the registration for your freshman classes we uh mr ritberg and i will also be open for for those questions too um for like you know choosing like you know your different types of math classes honors classes and you're a little elective so stay tuned for it from an updated email from us and we can definitely uh touch base with you so we will be talking to all of our parents and students when that becomes available on powerschool awesome thank you this is the questions here i can just run through them multi-screens so the first question we got was are there uniforms for jim no we don't have any specific uniforms i know in middle school you may have gotten uniforms we do require that you change we don't want you in jeans and hoodies sweating all over the place in pe class so we do ask that our students change for pe so they need sneakers they'll mark up the floors and they need you know at least somewhat comfortable clothing to to complete the activities in that's a good question um mr miller asked where the best classes are and he put a plug in for himself a208 um he teaches mr miller's the the one who who's in charge of of uh our youtube channel so he's live streaming this for you guys and then he's recording he does so much for us so i will give him a plug he does does an awesome job so if you're interested in in um engineering or you're interested in in the cte classes that he teaches uh graphic design things like that um he's a really good teacher so that's his that's his one one plug he gets during flex if a lot of people choose one thing does it close up yeah it actually does that's a really really good question so teachers set up these courses that that students can join into during flex and they typically set their cap at like 17 for academic things um so um they can make them larger obviously so if if we have like a tire change tuesday they make it a little bit larger so kids can go in and see how to do that sort of thing but um the most of them are capped at 17.

is to as we start every year in the committees is to select the care person and a vice chairperson for the committees um so with that i'll leave it open to the group to entertain your suggestions sorry i was just going to um make a motion that we uh nominate mr jannelli for the chairperson i will second that any other nominations and move nominations be closed well i thank you all for your trust again that being said uh hi mrs cooper um i'll take a vote anybody in favor hi hi hi thank you all right um secondly i'll ask for a motion to nominate a vice chair to the committee i'd like to nominate al russo i will second that i'm flattered all in favor get over yourself hi hi hi very good thank you all right al thank you very much i appreciate your effort from doing this and i appreciate everybody's faith and both myself for now um it's good so that and i guess a little highlight the workshop will start at six we'll have a presentation by um erica haynes einstein from the school project and then that should take about 45 minutes to one hour hopefully and then we'll just move right into the uh budget presentation with uh with courtney as i said before i thought would be so exciting and challenging this year i'd like to also as a committee i was thinking after we get through the budget process is is maybe we can get together and work with courtney to perhaps streamline the or to come up with different concepts to to present the financialism into our alice point the more the better we present these financials and the simpler we do it um the more people would be interested in this and we work together to put our thoughts together as layman present it to courtney and see what she thinks it may make the the budget presentation um at these board meetings a little bit more interesting rather than looking at summary or looking at 300 line numbers and you know and losing everybody in in the picture there so are you talking about board members only or are you talking about also stakeholders such as committee members if we could come up with ideas for next year as to projects that we can do to enhance the presentation of the financials maybe also you know find out from courtney now that we have a new accounting system as to what kind of additional reports we can get that perhaps or you know we couldn't get because it was labor intense uh things like that we if we can have a conversation with her to better uh better educate ourselves and make a better presentation for these numbers now that we have a better accounting system and to try to keep it you know more simplified so the numbers and meanings become meaningful again it also allows us as a committee to be more functional rather than you know to meet once a year for two or three weeks around budget season and then we go to sleep for you know nine months so uh you know with that in mind just come up with some ideas as as to what you think how we can improve the financial presentation of the statements or to request information uh that we don't have now i think the new accounting system they have allows the flexibility to sort a lot better whereas before it was very okay because we had to drill down and and dig into the numbers uh in order for her to find something so well i i think it's going to be most important going forward when we open up the new academy and have to ask for a lot more money oh definitely yeah and now you know as the budget grows you know we're going to be more responsible for these numbers and we'd like to know you know where we're spending it it's easy when you're looking at a you know 100 plus million dollars or 150 let's pick a number uh to get lost in the weeds there uh and maybe have some spending that that's not appropriate or we can look for some cost savings or cost cuts so i think it's a big time for us to start to to discipline ourselves in going ahead and what these numbers mean and how we can better present them so it's just you know just the thoughts that we could be more functional and more functionable and and uh play a better part in the presentation of the numbers all right with that uh mr janelle uh before we move forward uh if it's okay with everyone because this is a long night tonight so about 10 minutes to seven because we just take a break before we go into the total workshop if that's okay with everyone if everyone is good just move right into the workshop just let me know and we won't stop okay yeah i think we'll need a bathroom break about ten to seven or five to seven i think that's a good idea okay with that being said i'll ask for a motion to adjourn okay second second thank you all in favor will say hi i thank you for your attendance i thank you for the chairperson position uh and i'll see you in a few minutes thank you very much it's an introduction i see that uh erica is here i'm going to ask erica to quickly jump in she could start a presentation and before you start rfa test would you prefer the questions being held until the end or if you prefer them as your presentation is is going i'll leave that up to you the presenter sir so i will um the presentation tonight is a little different than what we've done in years past we've changed it and so i'll share that with you but i'll stop after the ecs formula and ask if you have any questions for that and then i want to cover some of these other formula types because there is there are proposals whether it's at your local level or at the state legislature that you may want to understand other school funding types so i want to just do some of that and i just want to say how good it is to see everybody's face i miss you all um so it's very nice to see you with that i will start i'm going to share my screen and i have sent kara the slide deck so she has that um for any distribution that you all would like to do um you have my contact information as always reach out with questions um you all know who we are but we started in 2015 and we are a non-partisan non-profit that is committed to helping folks navigate and understand um education funding and state finance issues we really strive to to help provide policy solutions to transparency issues and to data issues around state and school finance you can find us doing all of this and we will not weigh in on local issues as you all know or endorse or oppose local initiatives candidates referendums so we're going to get started just with a refresher here of funding sources for public education in connecticut and when you're looking at that dark blue bar that 6.6 billion dollars that comes from 169 communities determining what they're going to invest in in education from a local level that top gray bar is less than one half of a billion dollars from the federal government and i i say that um understanding that as always a half a billion dollars in my checking account would make a huge difference and yet in the scope of an 11.4 billion dollar annual budget for education in connecticut it is a small portion um and tonight we're talking about that orange bar the 4.3 billion dollars that the state allocates to education in connecticut so you know the the question that brings us here always is how does the state determine how much money each school district should get and i want to just remind you that right now we have more than 10 different funding formulas in connecticut and they are really parsed out by type of school so um first of all type matters is it a magnet school is it a vocational or agriscience school where it's located is a secondary concern and the third piece that will come up in some formulas is who is running the the school district um meaning is it run by a regional education service center or is it run by a district so we're going to talk about education cost sharing and the purpose of the formula is really to determine how much money the state is supposed to give each city in town to fund its schools it's important to understand how this comes to us right so in 1977 um in a supreme court case horton versus the state essentially lost and it was ruled that um any type of education funding system that allows property wealthy towns to spend more on education with less effort um impedes children's constitutional rights to an equal education so really this is this is the first piece of equity in education funding as we're seeing it where um prior to this ruling we were very reliant on property taxes and while it feels like we are reliant on property taxes still because we are the state component comes in and in 1988 they begin the education cost sharing grant which is supposed to make up the difference between what a community can afford to pay and the cost to run the public school system for that community so it starts with the foundation amount and this is determined by the legislature 11 525 um dollars is what the legislature has identified as the amount that it costs to educate a student in connecticut who has no additional learning needs and yet i'm going to tell you that it also incorporates the state's share of special education funding so um i i understand and i can't um help you clarify the difference in that that it that's what it costs to educate and oh by the way the state special ed is in there we will say though that we reverse engineered the formula and this comes in on the lower part of the second quartile when compared to other states and normalized for that special ed piece meaning that it's low average um and then what the state did and renewed and added to their commitments in 2017 was looking at the additional needs that students come to school with which place an additional cost on the district a cost burden and they look at three categories and the current ecs formula the first is a low income student weight this is for students who are living in economic disadvantage as measured by free and reduced price lunch we could have a whole other conversation about whether that that counts it right or not but um so 30 more above that 11 525 for students who qualify for free and reduced price lunch we also have a concentrated poverty metric and what this does and this is new in legislation started in 2018 is essentially if a district has more than 75 percent of its students who are enrolled in free and reduced price lunch the number above that gets an additional five percent weight above the the foundation amount um and it's not for all of the students in that district just those above that 75 threshold the number and then english learners um the state for the first time um said indeed it does cost districts more to educate english learning students um and so there's a foundation amount weight of 15 percent so let me show you what that looks like because i think this this kind of starts looking at equity amongst our students right and in understanding that um the general education student there is at 11 525.

month i wanted to take this time to recognize that the work that we started around diversity equity and inclusion i know it's a very heavy lift and i'm grateful that the district is leading some very serious efforts and communication on this topic at yesterday's library commission meeting i was really pleased to learn that the library will be partnering with the district to build library collection at district schools um with an emphasis on social justice titles that were really exciting to hear and i know today we are considering resolution to honor national school counselors week and so i want to offer my congratulations and appreciation for all the school counselors working with all of our students and families today thank you great thank you next we have a board member rodriguez pena yes um good evening everyone first of all i'd like to congratulate all the parents that are going to be receiving their uh parent of the year award we um have many great parents at ausd and parents you play a very important role in the unified schools and your input is very valuable so we thank you for that and i want to thank you for you know uh it's all volunteering your time and we appreciate you taking that time and i i did go to um zoom on on um helping our students during the pandemic at uh with my foothill family and um mckinley and they were speaking to parents on how to help their child or what to look for in their um you know if they're depressed or they have anxiety they you know um gave them some some things that they can do to work with their child the do's and don'ts you know self-care and i think this is really great at this time that we you know are are i know we spoke about having these kind of um uh people come and speak to our children so i want to thank um assistant superintendent dana mitchell and foothill middle school and mckinney services i also went to the center middle school the concert roxanne reyes she was talking about believe it or not transitioning to high school and i'm like oh my god it's already that time again you know uh how time flies and um you know talking to the parents regarding credits on how how credits are going to be so much different than when they're in in middle uh elementary school or even um junior high school you know how credit's how important it is for them and um to keep track of their credits and she was speaking them how to read the gpa how to read their transcripts how to read college information so i want to thank center school and i know also that foothill middle school is doing the same thing i'm just enjoying their link but i know that they're all but all the middle schools are on their way um working with our eighth grade students going forward i went to the azusa parent learning network and it was having to do with math counting collections focusing on how parents can use counting strategies at home with their child with items in their home example pens pen papers um pencils and uh the next topic will be on positive behavior i think it's really good that um we have the owl cap and metric uh i am sorry i want to thank the director el capitan metric jennifer bryant and the teachers from um mislead the principal uh jennifer flores and tosa julie mcgall and the last i went to foothill middle school where um maria maria mahia from welford attendance she does a fantastic job when speaking to parents the importance of attendance even they are if they are doing distant learning how important is it is it for them to log on how to pay attention and you know how they still get their grades up so parents have many questions regarding um you know the grades in in logging in and and maria also does a really good job and then i want to thank her for that thank you thank you for that uh next we have board member chris gonzalez good evening um i will be brief i just want to echo what yolanda said about um honoring and our parents i'm really excited tonight that we will be honoring a handful of our parents um i know just i we have so many parents that do so many wonderful things that i think this is just one way we can show um that we appreciate them and that we value them and that um we think that they and their students should be at the center of all our decision-making and our voices and anything and i appreciate our our district's journey in that in that direction and i hope we can continue that and i think you all of you as parents make us stronger as a school district um so that's it thank you great thank you uh next we have board member adrian greer yeah i'll also be brief yeah excited and and grateful that we take this time uh you know in our you know in our school board calendar to to stop and pause and and recognize uh parents and so again this year is a little little different um but the appreciation um is no less and so just grateful for for all all the parents out there and grateful to be able to highlight some of them tonight um and then also just want to say thank you as well to um counselors um and all the work that that counselors do um that that is that is so vital um for for our students um that's all i have thank you for that and i would like to um also personally thank um the counselors um and i'm so excited to again do this resolution for this next year um i'm really excited for parent of the year you know it's because of parents that bring their children to the school district is how um we keep this district live so thank you parents and congratulations to all the parents that were nominated and congratulations to all the parents um that one and our district parent of the year um i'm really excited that this week the committee for um our diversity committee is going to start so i'm really excited about that it's a new journey for our entire school district to embark so really excited for the students the teachers and everyone who's going to be involved in that i would like to remind all parents teachers students that we have a survey out and it is really really important to to hear what you have to say please take a few minutes out of your time and please help us by filling this survey out so we can serve you and your students in a way that you would like to be served we want to hear you out and lastly we have a new employee mr ellen that i know has a birthday today so welcome to the team and happy birthday mr allen and that's all i have for today and next we're going to go ahead and instead of moving to 8.0 we had actually three individuals three teachers that um were not able to log in for public comment we're going to go ahead and move um to that real quick we have let's see here we have a meg can you hear me yes we could hear you trying to do this through my phone we had a very hard time um getting in through zoom so first i would like to thank you for the opportunity to address the board um and cabinet i am here related to vaccinations and i'm asking you to consider an option uh first and foremost i'd like to say that we are in the process of doing a survey with all of our certificated employees and while we have 24 hours left in that survey window as of right now which a large percentage of the teachers have participated almost 80 percent of them are in favor of having district-wide vaccinations before returning to school and so i'd like you to hear that statistic because it's powerful that you have a large group of teachers counselors toe says nurses that feel that mandatory vaccinations is is important for return to school secondly i'd like to talk to you about an option that i have witnessed and i think that it would be a good process for our district and i i would like you to consider this as you're discussing vaccinations and that is the model that chaffey joint union high school district is employing right now they have contracted with a health care provider and i don't know if it's blue cross blue shield but it's one of the blues i believe and they are utilizing a local medical facility they have a one week period where every employee is supposed to schedule an appointment within that given week they have a massive list of um a comprehensive list of all the employees names the employees show up show their id get vaccinated during that one given week and it is coordinated through the district i think it's really important that we look at a process like this versus just randomly asking teachers to go by signing up online somewhere and finding some distribution center vaccination center however you want to call it whereby they are individually responsible for getting the sun because that means it's all over the place and it causes more problems for any possibility of return when this teacher gets it this teacher doesn't this teacher missed their second dose whatever the case may be and so i'd just like you to consider a coordinated effort and what that means for the efficacy of our district and the delivery of education for our students so thank you for your time i greatly appreciate it stay safe and healthy and hopefully i will i can see you and you can't see me but hopefully i will see you all soon thank you thank you miss mix developer very input um next we go to greg cahill mr cahill you may mute your man hi good evening um i don't know how my name got on this list i didn't put it on the list but while i'm here congratulations to all the wonderful parents in azusa for all the work that you do thank you thank you for for that uh next we have miss diane reese miss dan reese you can meet yourself yes can you hear me yes okay thank you good evening school board members district officials and viewers my name is diane reese and i have been a teacher at dalton elementary for 32 years i'm here tonight to discuss the serious decisions regarding the most effective and purposeful instruction for our azusa students in the upcoming months ahead these are critical and permanent final decisions that cannot be reversed once we all move forward as professional educators district employees and school board officials we are having discussions in various weekly meetings to have a clear understanding of our options to either choose a form of hybrid model or continue our current distance learning and virtual academy programs although our conversations clarify or bring insight to diverse perspectives from many different angles your final decision impacts our families and students for this reason i deeply feel that our parents and families should have their voices purchased as well as ours what would this look like during this short timeline first it would be essential to provide a parent meeting from the district and our school administrators to explain the possibilities of what is offered based on l.a county and the viral transmission rate if they are not able to attend a digital message from the superintendent would be feasible reaching the remaining families next a parent survey would give them the ability to express themselves in possible scenarios depending on the questions and help clarify hybrid models it may be unclear what this may even entail for example driving and dropping off their children at diverse times of the day and um and a few you know depending on which days of the week and supporting different age children um they may have heard about hybrid models from their relatives or the media but may not even understand what our final design may look like in their mind they may be thinking that we are either continuing our online programs or returning to a full-time classroom currently they are focusing on their own daily survival and how to keep their children motivated to stay in our online classes we had the responsibility to continue being transparent in not only our own decisions but our intentions as well since other districts have involved parent feedback through their surveys they have been able to make the final best decision and plan for their staff and families i hope this will be deeply considered for the sake of our students and our families and thank you very much for hearing me and have a very safe evening thank you miss reese okay we're gonna go ahead and move on to um 8.1 comments and reports by superintendent cabinet and student board members let's go ahead and get started with student board members do we have think he's a huge asset to our district and more importantly a huge asset to our business division so with that i want to formally introduce mr brian allen to the board into the community of azusa thank you latasha thank you board members and uh i just want to say i'm excited about starting my new position here and look forward to some positive changes and continuing the legacy that's uh out of that today we launched our superintendent and student roundtable that consists of 30 students across our three high schools we we came out of the gate running today it was our first meeting but we effectively being professional sharing their perspective and being honest my hat's off to our students some of which are in this room right now and i look forward to our next our next meeting i would also like to thank uh to thank all the parents that sit on the parent round table for the opportunity to collaborate listen and learn from you it is really inspiring to witness the amount of leadership positivity and partnership that you bring to the table and i just appreciate you for that uh with that i want to segue in to congratulate all of the parents that are being honored tonight your partnership your commitment and your leadership are essential to what we do and i want to personally thank you for everything uh that you do not only for your students but for the district and the community at large quiero felicitar atollos padres su association su compromiso is thank you good evening i would like to show my gratitude and just um immense appreciation to our counselors for everything they're doing to support our students and our families and staff during distance learning we just we appreciate you and and celebrate you also want to announce that on monday january 25th we held our first district diversity equity and inclusion committee meeting and it was co-facilitated by myself dr jennifer edick bryant who is our director of el capitan metrics and jenny lee who is our director of early childhood education and our participants include high school students parents classified staff instructional staff teachers and administrators our first meeting included getting to know one another and then really digging into the what the why and how the work uh collaboration and some consensus building on working agreements and then beginning to really define uh diversity equity and inclusion we did a reflective activity and had dialogue and breakout rooms and the conversations were powerful insightful and inspirational thank you good evening board of education community members i just want to use this time to thank all of our parents our grandparents and family members that partner with our district the work that you do could only enhance the the the work that we all do as a district together i also want to show my deep and sincere appreciation for our counselors uh your work is absolutely essential for the success of students thank you great thank you guys all for your comments next we'll go ahead and move to 9.1 covet 19 update thank you so the business department is still currently working to equip our sites um to make sure that we have adequate um ppe as far as dex desk partitions we have contracted with the company who has begun to walk each one of our sites they complete the district office and half of our sites as of today and they will conclude that this week well they will give us a thumbs up like hey everything's in place or make recommendations so that we can place orders to make sure all of our student staff are adequately prepared and safe thank you um i want to thank all of the teams that are currently working really hard in preparation for an opening if that is something that is going to be allowed and something that is safe currently the governor has a safe schools for all plan which would incentivize school districts to apply for reopening in the tk2 level uh in the first phase and then three to six in the second phase and that would and that um that is dependent on having a seven day average daily rate that is under 25 per 100 000 residents this opening would also be in a cohort fashion currently in la county that number uh although it is trending downward uh it is still above the 25 per 100 000 that is required to open under the current governor's proposed plan we continue to be grateful for our think together partnership and the implementation of the in-person learning hubs currently they have 336 available seats in that program for the in-person learning hubs and the enrollment is 290.

remember this is a year and a half ago so going into 2020 the governor did contribute a fair amount of increases to the base level amount to account for his commitment to achieve a 20 pay increase by 2020 in addition to the inflationary increase as well as if you recall it was in 2020 that we anticipated a loss of 400 students but we gained over 600 students so that is also reflected here in our our revenue over the prior year any questions on that okay compensated absences as you know at separation or retirement depending upon certain criteria our employees are able to buy back medical leave or have an opportunity to be paid back for some of their vacation leave so this is reflective of that the salary and other adjustments is primarily anybody um that uh that that had a uh had a payout that was you know basically unexpected loss of a employee or something of that nature and then other adjustments as well there might have been an overpayment or an underpayment whatever the case may be that's in the salary and other adjustments the current year additions those are the value of all of the compensated absences that were added to the rolls so all of the earned um medical leave or the earned vacation leave and then the current year deletions are all of the medical leave or vacation leave that was actually used during the school year so you can see that overall the balance increased by nine million dollars and that is an ongoing liability for gilbert public schools just wanted to make sure that was clear it increased two nine million not buying i'm sorry increase two sorry it increased by a half over a little bit over half a million yes sir yep and then finally the short term debt this just shows that in 2019 we did borrow you can see the issued of 22 million dollars based upon our available cash in that year we did re redeem all the prior year the 18 tax anticipation note amount as well as the 19 tax anticipation note amount within the 2019 fiscal year with an ending balance of zero we did so and then you can see that based upon our analysis of cash needs going into the 2020 school year we made the decision to borrow 10 million again significantly less than the 22 million indicative of our increasing availability of cash in government public schools again a positive uh situation for gilbert public schools uh and then you can see where there's still an ending balance of 10 million dollars but that has has again since uh is has since been uh taken off the book so to speak because it has been accounted for and paid off so that is all that i have unless you have any additional questions i don't have a question but i do have a comment to make and that is that i know the legislature a few years ago just passed a bill saying that we had to change auditors and then they went back and revised it or whatever and in a previous life that i had i have to say that i think we are very very fortunate to have heinfield and meech still i i've seen the quality work that and the integrity which to me is probably the most important aspect of all of this is the integrity that i think your firm has and even though you develop relationships with the districts you also aren't afraid to call us out if we make a mistake and and i'm really really pleased that we're still able to have a relationship with heinfield ameech i just wanted to add a comment that i i do appreciate the um the hard work the audit to show that we are um you know going by the procurement code and doing the things that are required to be transparent about our finances and to to use taxpayer money wisely and again i think it's really good that we do have an audit firm that that does such a great job so thank you and thank you to our financial team because i know you all worked really hard in this very stressful year to make this come out so thank you anything else board members could just a quick couple questions um so the town notes even though we didn't pay them off until september was there any extra costs associated with that there should not have been because from the investor standpoint it was paid back it was an accounting uh situation that occurred we purposely wanted to have it set up to be paid back in may to avoid any additional interest charges so it was paid it just we just didn't account for it the accounting um was delayed the accounting at the county once that was delayed okay yeah was that the county okay great so it's not like we need to change something to make that happen better in a way we can't because it's with the county right okay and then also just wanted to thank you for the timeliness um i know that this is a little bit later than we had hoped right but that's because of all the different we were waiting on the grants we were waiting on different things to just make sure how we were going to account for it so i appreciate that we get it done on time and that the audit comes in and works and we all work really hard to do all that we can to to meet the obligations that we have so so when will we turn this in then so it has been turned in so we are not late we if you recall we did do a revised annual financial report which is something that jennifer is talking about a little bit with having to redo some things because we decided to revise our annual financial report which caused normally we shoot for a completion at the end of december that way we can meet the obligations of the asbo certificate of excellence as well as the gfoa those are due december 31st we were successful though at getting uh a an extension uh through the end of january so we've met that the most important thing is that we were required to have the cafe completed so that we can fulfill our obligations under the continuing disclosure associated with our bond indebtedness okay so that was due yesterday by close of business and all of the reports were filed and the disclosure was completed on friday great thank you anything else i've made most of my comments as we went but just again i want to say thank you to everyone and miss that's uh just a curiosity more than anything the idea of our tans that's kind of a an ongoing necessary evil for school districts is that correct we'll we'll be seeing that fairly regularly on an annualized basis just because we have to meet payroll in august is that a correct understanding and it's we we did not have to borrow in the current year so we did not borrow any tax anticipation notes for 2021 because our cash position was much better than it had had been in the past so it depends each year we go through an analysis to determine that but yes the answer is yes and it's further exacerbated by the fact that the state of arizona holds back almost 38 million dollars of state aid until like the 8th or 9th of july that's supposed to be received by the end of june and so that that further puts um pressure on the cash flow analysis for school districts here in arizona yeah just i just really wanted to make that clear because we will see that often and it oftentimes has nothing to do with our accounting or finance procedures it's simply how the calendar falls and what your budget balances happen to be from year to year that's correct and i too will echo the same sentiment that's been echoed here to you and to the entire finance team you have brought us miles and we appreciate that anything else no no thank you guys i appreciate it thank you we'll move to item 2.0 school calendars dr mccord anything you want to say by introduction yes i'd like to bring up next executive director of elementary and calendar enthusiast extraordinaire um mr jason martin he'll present to you tonight some findings of survey results related to options for calendars 20 22 23 and 20 23 24.

so i'd like to make sure that i'm putting this into context so remember that much of the decisions regarding last year's budget and spend was made two years ago the spring of 19 we made all the decisions to go into the 1920 school year so i just wanted to make sure that we're all aware of the time frame that we're dealing with this is a very awkward time where we're dealing with the current year we're getting ready to plan for next year and we're still finishing up with the prior year so i wanted to make sure that we all understood the context in addition i wanted to make sure that i was introducing the players for tonight's presentation first i'm going to bring up jennifer shields she is our chief external auditor from heinfeld meech so she'll join me up here and then of course jackie matanin who is the director of finance for gilbert public schools she'll be joining me here as well and then ashley miranda is our budget manager and she's here to provide moral and if there are questions uh detailed support on the results of the financials for year ended june 30 2020.

we gave or i gave you a budget estimate of 2021 that was something that we had to approve and then submit to the department of local government and finance they review that based off of anticipated revenue and expenses and they determine whether or not that we have those funds or appropriations i should say to spend so when we're talking about dollars here with the budget we're talking in terms of appropriations so those aren't actual dollars those are just dollars that we're allowed to spend for this year okay so with the education fund we estimated we we published an estimated the 14.3 million it came back to be that uh which is good so we didn't have to lose any appropriations uh when it came to the education fund i gave you a comparison of what we spent in 2020 just to kind of give you an idea of how that appropriation lines up with what we actually spent in operations we estimated sent in published 8.8 million dollars uh the lgf reduced that appropriation to 7.4 and then there's the actual expenditures in 2020 debt service health and rainy day health which then shows the total differences between what was submitted back in september i believe that's when we did our budget hearing to what the actuals would be for 2021.

the competition begins with judging at a regional level our region is northern indiana parts of northwest ohio and southwest michigan the following students receive awards at the regional judging and will have artwork on display at the fort wayne museum of art february from february 13th to april 10th and so just to give you some information at emma bone mixed media honorable mention grant dale ceramics honorable mention chloe miller drawing bill strike illustration honorable mention uh trinity uh shotgun ceramics second honorable mentions or two honorable mentions and granddale also ceramics silver medal chloe miller mixed media silver medal grant dale again ceramics two gold medals chloe miller uh mixed media gold medal uh trinity again ceramics silver portfolio one and four awarded in region that's excellent grand dale ceramics gold portfolio one of only three in the region and norfolk is very proud of the work of our students they persevered through code interruptions and won 12 awards at the regional level all gold and silver awards will move on to the national judging later this year so if you see here again i just scroll down so that's going to be hard to find where i'm looking at this again you see that's what it said next sometimes technologies well if you've seen these work congratulate them it just will not even scroll down correctly so thank you for that and you might have seen that in the paper i believe um and maybe in the longest plain dealer there were some things uh listed so that was very good um if i see it later during the meeting i might interrupt and sorry again but it just won't scroll right um also mr snyder says norfolk girls basketball received an exemplary behavior report from ihsaa one of the officials wrote i was impressed with the respectfulness of a team and coaches during tonight's contest and numerous displays of sportsmanship especially another sportsmanship from number 25 uh character kyra kennedy filing a player and knocking her to the floor then lending a hand to help her up and apologizing to the player and to me thank you kyra and that nhs lady norris for your respect and sportsmanship continue to go on here there's some more from uh mrs moore mitchell north metropolitan parent jessica b recently shared her appreciate to appreciation for the first grade teacher mrs spacey bone mrs bean's daughter was in mrs bones class during that 1920 school year and commented that during our school closure mrs bone went above and beyond to ensure every student had someone to talk with and there was she was there for the students as a parent she appreciates mrs bone believing in her child's dreams and pushing her and others to be the best person they can be mrs bean went on to share that her daughter adores mrs bone and that beautiful souls like hers are not ones you come across often thank you mrs bone for your passion and dedication to our students that's one that we saw also we asked him just to put it on here since we're not doing the spotlight and then from mr martin at shark creek we'd like to thank substitute teachers tony mckilla christy good and sheryl hudson for their multiple days of working in our building recently they all did a great job but we do know without our substitutes this year especially with kobe we would not have been able to have school so we appreciate them very much so that's all of our recognitions for tonight mr daisy we'll move on to public comment for agenda items only we have to go public but we'll wait for those on and i facebook get it to work on this finally so okay if i can finish what it said because it recognizes a teacher and he's a new teacher we want to recognize him says if you see any of these students please congratulate them thank you to mr adams weevil and the art students for the job well done and we know that he's a new student a new teacher art teacher at northfield doing a great job lives in the community works with the honeywell foundation has his own professional positions that he does as far as with artwork and so he is really leading them to do and motivate to do well as you can see from all of the honors that they received okay so we didn't have anything from public so uh consent agenda item moving forward we need the approval of the minutes and i'm just going to go ahead and lump all three of those official meetings that we had last time into one approval of minutes that would be the finance meeting of the organization meeting in a regular meeting a second to approve the minutes of our previous meetings all in favor say hi opposed financials claims i was thinking the other day about how blessing been without snow to not have gold expenses [Laughter] yeah we had there was one day where we had uh minimal smoke snow accumulation on the ground and clearing out the parking lots and then december first i guess that would have been yeah yep they're paid by the snowfall steve usually makes that decision on whether the parking lots need plowed and wind the only other one i had was a tractor for northfield i didn't know ttg sold shocked is that cheap i can't i don't know if it's really a tractor or a long board [Laughter] but yeah that's for mowing the airplanes no that's for helping push snow and things like that for sidewalks and and other things um they do it does not have a mowing deck on it so it's like garden trucks yeah yeah the ones we had are old and they needed updated second not much with payroll pretty consistent on what it should be no extras sure [Music] i have no financial summary since we covered all of that at the finance meeting typically th this meeting would be where we looked at the end of the month which would have been the end of december but we already looked at that in our board of finance meetings okay moving on to personnel also very short uh under employment amy kriesik teacher at white's high school if i said that correctly amy yes you do okay and then under leave we have number 123 and you see the approximate gains there for that that needs to occur and just as a reminder uh amy will be taking the position of gary korean shampoo retired moving on to reports heartland career center matt i wish i had one uh okay i had a machine would break down i couldn't go but i did call them in to make a motion on a minute because they didn't have enough people that were there before so and on the agenda there wasn't a whole lot going on so but okay i really don't have any report superintendents reporters yeah i just want to say tonight i'm very pleased to say that we do not have any active covered positive cases whether it's staff or students and so today we were going to get our last quarantined students back and when i say quarantine students those would be those students that are close contacts or also they have a positive now we still do have some students that out if they have coveted like symptoms then they actually go home and they're on on a list but i think the list that mr drake ran this morning was like 37 so there are still someone quarantined but those would be typical for this time of year anyway that would be similar to like me the flu or colds or things like that so but we do still have them on a quarantine list and just to let you know for the first would be 16 17 days of school counting today the 17 days of school we've actually only had four and probably i shouldn't be saying this because i said something the other day and uh chris said that uh me and i jinxed it but i did not fix it because we were still going down but we only had four positive cases in those 17 days so and and also when you saw some of the things that i send out to msd all and also to the school board report you know the state was really red two weeks ago uh last week a lot less red more orange and of course we're just kind of hovering around that positivity rate of six seven or eight years so walt ridge county is doing really really well and i hope we can just keep it going so we don't have to send those students home that are positive or not positive but if they're close contacts and miss those educational opportunities so i just wanted to give a positive report about that and maybe shouldn't use the word positive yeah trump said it would disappear [Music] i would just add a little more to what mr keefer started to talk about there's lots of research coming out there's lots of specialists coming out they just say it's good to have kids in school and so i appreciate mr keith faber's efforts and everybody else around the county trying to reduce the number of kids that we're contact tracing and trying to look for ways to keep kids in the building and so i feel like we're especially well placed in the area but again brown university just released the study the president is coming out and talking about trying to get like everybody at every level was saying we got to get kids in school and so i just appreciate mr key favorite efforts on that here guys support for that and hopefully we get even more kids in school for longer so question do we how many kids do we still have out taking visual we allowed so those kids had to have a doctor's note saying that they or someone in their household was at a high risk and so of that group we are down to 26 and that's k to 12 in every building not many at all and uh we do have some rise students that are that we don't include in that but those would be like vernon manor like very high risk children and so uh 26 k-12 about 12 kids uh one through six and about 12 kids 14 kids then seven through 12.

she's a baby a baby so we're going to see an excerpt necessities because after the so many people wanted to to talk to her she was interviewed by a lot of uh you know hosts on on tv and this comes from an interview with uh james corden people know him from carpool karaoke and broadway on the street i don't know what that's called oh that's great and so he asked her a really important question he said to her you know you're such an inspiration to young people so what message do you have for them oh yes let's hear her answer to that question and all of the students at wildwood can feel like she's talking right to them so here we go it's a very short excerpt from amanda gorman thank you that's a phenomenal question for me it's to know that poetry and art in general means showing up with your best self whoever that may be and that in itself is beautiful you know hearing you talk about the grace in which i performed my poem as someone who's had to like work for years to overcome a speech impediment that means everything to me it means that i can still show up and carry this history and this background with me and still be more than worth it and more than enough and i hope that that's what other young people see from this today whether you're a poet or not an artist a dancer a late night host like the more that we can bring our authentic selves with hope into the moment the more that moment will show up for us i mean i i i sit there and i think to myself i wonder if our elementary students who are ages 5 through you know 12 if they are understanding this idea of authentic self because it's so hard to understand when you're so young what does that mean but she's kind of giving you examples of it in terms of believing in yourself and not shying away from the things you want to be the things you want to try the things you want to say exactly yeah yeah and we'd like all of our students to feel that inside of themselves so speaking of which we have a group of sixth graders who feel it and are brave enough to recite some of amanda gorman's inaugural poem so let's invite them to join us here's jude and elia and quinn and nina and violet welcome to all of you [Music] so i know um you're about to read the poem um the excerpts from the hill we climb i'm gonna how about if we we talked a little bit about why you chose because you each chose certain lines so one at a time you could just briefly tell me um is all right here oh where's ola lara thank you oh thank you so much oh lalara ah how do you like that i'm so sorry ola lara in my stream scrolled down so there you are thank you for remembering everybody that's a full group so one at a time could you just say why you chose the words that you did and i'm just going to go in order i have jude elia lalara violet nina and the queen okay so i'll unmute you and you could just briefly tell us you know why you chose those words the words that you're about to read all right go ahead jude um i chose my words from the poem because i think that like being like coming together and being a community is really important and like those like and like that like really represented that beautiful thank you jude all right elia i thought the words that they were cool they are the way she uses language is incredibly cool thank you elia hello lara whoops um i chose my words because i like how they um represent like hope and like stuff like that so yeah beautiful violet i chose my words because i was the last one to choose and those were the only ones available i like them either way thank you for your honesty nina um i chose my lines because a lot of people suffered throughout this time and my lines really tell that story and quinn um i chose my lines because i really like the way she read them at the inauguration there's like such purpose in the lines okay so miss estes and i are going to remove ourselves so we just see all of you and you know the order and um take a deep breath and and ready to go okay good luck everyone yeah you're gonna be great okay we'll start with when the day comes we ask ourselves where can we find the light in this never-ending shade the loss we carry a sea we must wade we fray the belly of the beast even that quiet isn't always peace in the norms and notions of what just is isn't always justice and yet the dawn is ours before we know it somehow we do it somehow we've weathered and witnessed the nation that isn't broken but simply unfinished we need the successes of the country in a time where a skinny black girl descended from slaves raised by a single mother can dream of becoming president only we lay down our arms so we can reach out our arms to one another we seek harm to none in harmony for all let the globe if nothing else say this is true that even as we grieved we grew that even as we hurt we hoped even as we tired we tried that will forever be tied victorious and yes we are far from polished far from pristine but that doesn't mean we are striving to form a union that is perfect we are striving to forge our union with purpose [Music] we will rise from the goldland hills of the west we will rise from the windswept northeast where our forefathers first realized revolution we will rise from the lake rimmed cities of the midwestern states we will rise from the unbaked south we will rebuild reconcile and recover and every known nook of our of our nation and every known corner called our country our people diverse and beautiful will emerge when day comes we step out of the shade aflame and unafraid the new dawn blooms as we free it for there is always light if only we are brave enough to see it if only we are brave enough to be oh if only you're brave enough to be it and you all are brave to come and to share that your reading with us thank you for your bravery thank you so much thank you sixth graders beautiful so thank you for joining us uh keep being brave and we're so proud of you here thanks everybody that's fabulous huh what words so miss estes we have more and more at this assembly to share and we have another sixth grader and we're going to try to find him fernando who emailed me and said i'd like to speak at this assembly can you imagine that he just felt like he had something you want to share and i'm we're going to wait uh we're going to move ahead but um we're gonna find him and get him backstage i sent him the link so why don't we move over that and i think we have you have someone special to you i i do i have someone special to share um so i wanted to introduce some of the teacher students have met my son alexander we call him xander he is a person who is a writer he is a person who has learned how to play the guitar during the pandemic and in inspiration of amanda gorman he chose a song just for her and so this is a song for amanda gorman and the effort to be your authentic self hi wildwood um i'm here i'm going to sing a song for black history month uh put your records on by corinne bailey ray [Music] three little birds sat on my window and they told me i don't need to worry [Music] maybe sometimes the more things seem to change girl put your records i hope you get your dreams [Music] maybe sometimes we the more you stay the same the more they seem to change don't you think it's strange girl [Music] somewhere somehow [Music] just more than i could take [Music] jeans i hope you get your dreams go ahead and let your hair down you're gonna find yourself somewhere somehow that's my baby boy oh my goodness hello how beautiful oh what a beautiful voice well he's he's worked on that voice i mean when you think about the things we do to bring our true self to the world you have to practice and he has worked on his voice for a long time but the guitar playing is his pandemic hobby so that is something he's just learned and i just wanted the kids to see that this is you know it takes work to become your authentic self it doesn't just come you have to work at it yes how true how true and speaking about authentic cells we have a sixth grader backstage who's ready who feels empowered ready to share something he wants to share some thoughts with us so fernando let's we're going to welcome you hi fernando hello hi so thank you for reaching out to us and saying you have something to share with people thank you um so we're going to be talking about black lives matter covert and some of the elections so okay so so fernando before you begin let's take a deep breath and you came to wildwood in second grade right fernando yeah yeah and uh where where were you before you came to wildwood jackson street in northampton northampton so then he came over so it's been so great to watch you grow and become who you are as a sixth grader thank you miss estes and i are gonna get off the screen and just let you share your thoughts with everybody because at wildwood we we really believe students have lots to share all right thank you take it away all right so before i start i just want to say thank you to chris for helping me and like um helping me with the essay and nick for making this happen so um hey wadwood it's been a long time i've talked to you guys my name is fernando today i'm going to be talking about 2020 slash last year yeah i i know it wasn't the best year but let's get kicked things off with black lives matter um mr george floyd sadly got killed by a police officer and there was a big protest that happened i'm sad that racism is still going on because you met your life matters you stand up when you feel something bad is coming that's why you have rights people like imagine i have a red apple and a green one i eat both of them inside of them it's an apple at the end of the day you're human and you matter now let's let's move on to the election congrats to mr joe biden and vice president kamala harris kamara harris um was the first african-american asian-american woman vice president honestly right now the people do it i mean sometimes i am here at my house wondering how do the homeless people do it um the world isn't the best sometimes the world isn't the best i want to fix fix these problems and make the us a better place now we're staying saving the worst for last corporate 19 it's been killing people all around the world i mean like last month some of my family members got copied my great-grandma got it i was upset but i gotta keep going they're good now so i'm happy but some people didn't make it so can we please have a moment of silence amen i also gotta gotta make this sixth grade year one of the best years every teacher i had second to sixth grade is amazing and y'all know who you guys are when i leave the school i just want to say fifth graders next year is your turn to be the leaders of the school anyways bye have a good day everybody you did it you did it fernando oh i love your voice i love your passion thank you thank you fernando get me lots of shout outs in the chat fernando you have a lot of people out there who support you and are really feeling inspired so thank you thank you so much and uh 2021 the flat part for you and for you you're going out of wild with strong flying high thank you all right i see you fernando i see you thank you for sharing your authentic self with us today thank you all right take care fernando we'll see you soon okay you did it you did a beautiful job thank you i'm feeling chills yes so in this you know we're hearing students and their teachers are developing ways for us to hear their voices and so what one way they're doing that is by recording themselves with something called flip grid and we're about to hear a group of third and fourth graders i can't wait i haven't seen this so i'm very curious get ready these are um i think they're called found poems and they're inspired by amanda gorman's another poem of hers called um morning oh i can't remember the name but it's a very uh she wrote it at the beginning of kovic and they listened to her poem and then they kind of felt the images and the themes and then created their own poems okay and the last thing i want to say amanda gorman said that in third grade that's when she first developed her love of poetry because because of a teacher the team got her inspired so let's we're about to hear these third and fourth graders doing original poems nice let's hear it well the first thing we did was our teacher put on a video of amanda gorman reciting the miracle of the morning and got to talk about it in groups it was very inspirational and then we went to writing we had when we were writing we have to write what we see what we felt and kind of put a little bit of our lives into it what's happening around us and stuff and we and so and then we got to carve it so we can carve it into what it is what our poems are now and what i love about amanda gorman is that when you're writing you're supposed to take the reader with you on what you did and what happens in the story and amanda gorman really took us all really takes us all with her when she's reciting her poems so we can really we can real so we really know what is happening and what her poem is all about this phone poem is inspired by amanda gorman harder and harder times by juwan brave and peaceful people humankind and kind words emerging strong sunlight smile sweetly harder and harder times our hearts are growing stronger at these challenging times poem inspired by amanda gorman spreading hope by jorah and kiana looking out the window we see people doing the things they love my cat is walking in the snow the snow the snow is falling in big clumps kids are chasing their dogs i listen to the rainfall it makes a brighter day in the world no matter how small you are you will be together life is like a light bulb how hard we try to destroy it we can't cannot we should start reading children's books that tell the truth of life when we have hope it makes a difference and helps people around us we can spread that hope to everybody everyone spread hope everybody spread hope hi my name is lena this is a found poem inspired by amanda gorman emerge sun light right eyed girl hope emerge together beings best of beings smiling sweetly fate and that's the end of my poem goodness oh my god oh my god that was amazing oh my gosh brooke johann georgiana lina oh my gosh you oh just oh oof that isn't that was work they they were they were working on that stuff wow what a great great share we can just take that uh happiness the inspiration we feel into our days so thank you we've been talking a lot about bringing joy and light into the world and and uh your poetry third and fourth graders certainly did that that was amazing awesome thank you thank you so much okay so we are getting close to the end of the assembly uh miss allison may i call you allison that's fine and we always like to leave a little bit at the end of the assembly uh before we have our closing poem and song to say goodbye and good wishes to our shooting stars and we're saying goodbye to three students who are going to different places so shall we do that yes with our with our full hearts from the poetry we'll be sending them off so here we go ah do you want to do this one miss estes stay june kim in grade four sejun always likes the specials art and the book club you will miss every one he will miss everyone in his class as well as the book distribution oh say june i'm going to miss you i'm going to miss you and say june will i think will still be with us to the end of the month but this is we're saying goodbye now because we won't have another assembly until then yes and then we're saying goodbye to a brother and sister who's lastly i think is next friday so this is sarah jung in grade 4 also and she says i really enjoyed going to school at wildwood all the teachers were so nice i enjoyed all the specials and all these other things i will miss all my friends and all the teachers bye sarah i'm going to miss you and her brother yep my buddy andy he's he's in grade six and he says what i will miss most about wildwood school is all the nice teachers they have always treated us very well and i feel so bad to leave so near the end of my elementary school days so sarah and andy are not moving that far away to eastern massachusetts to lexington yes and so now and say june's going back to south korea so now we all of us in the wildwood circle out there in your homes we we imagine seijun sarah and andy in their new schools making new friends having great teachers in the new homes we make that picture in our mind we're sending them off with good wishes here we go ready ready 2 good luck good experiences happy people um thank you for all your contributions uh to wildwood and stay in touch tell us how you're doing yeah you have my email yeah that's right there we go we'd like to hear wildwood we have wildwood families and students all around the world okay okay i think we have one more presenter a poem right yes we do and uh so this is carolyn carolyn works here at wildwood and she came to us and said i wanna i wanna read a poem so carolyn we're going to invite you here how are you so nice to see you hi friends good morning wildwood thank you for everybody thank you being brave enough to join us here and recycle for us and oh sorry happy black history month to everyone and i'm so inspired by all the students that came before me yes and i would like to read a poem by maya angelou called and still i rise beautiful so we're going to remove ourselves carolyn and and let you present to the whole community you may write me down in history with your bitter twisted lies you may trod me in the very dirt but still like dust i'll rise does my sassiness upset you why are you beset with gloom cause i walk like i got oil wells pumping in my living room just like moons and like suns with the certainty of tides just like hope springing high still i'll rise did you want to see me broken bowed head and lowered eyes shoulders falling down like teardrops weakened by my soulful cries does my heartiness offend you don't you take it awful hard cause i laugh hahaha like i've got gold mines digging in my own backyard you may shoot me with your words you may cut me with your eyes you may kill me with your hatefulness but still like air i'll rise out of the hut of history shame i rise up from a past thus rooted in pain i rise i'm a black ocean leaping in wide welling and swelling i bear in the tide leaving behind nights of terror and fear i rise into a daybreak that's wondrously clear i rise bringing in the gifts that my ancestors gave i am the dream and the hope of the slave i rise i rise i rise thank you wildwood thank you carolyn oh i love your reading of that that is one of my favorite poems and you really made it just come alive thank you thank you thank you so much carolyn that was beautiful thank you those words will stay with us still i rise thank you have a good day thank you so much and carolyn picked out that poem alison and he didn't realize that the closing song by matali was coming right up uh incorporates some of the words of that of the poem into the song oh i mean it's just amazing how connected this has all been for me from phyllis wheatley to amanda gorman to carolyn holmes reading of maya angelou i mean it's just been such a wonderful experience of celebrating the written word so here we go yes that's true and it's really just kicking off okay but we'll talk more about that in a minute but let's welcome back hello what i'm trying to do i follow these kids but it was really great to see them uh i i knew many of those faces um you all look a little bit older your head got a little bit bigger you know uh but it was so cool to see you know how how much a year for some of you it feels like two years worth that i've seen because i haven't been it was really refreshing to see that and see the language that you are developing and how you're interpreting um black history um you know y'all are in good hands you think the world is in good hands yeah um i guess i can just introduce this or is yeah yeah so this is we're closing out the assembly miss allison and i will come back on to launch the uh regan the african-american region day but this is you're bringing it you started us off and now you're bringing us all together so take it away so this song is um you know i've never done this song alone and i've never i've actually never performed this song so you all are the first time i usually don't i usually don't sing or play piano at the same time usually i have a band doing that so this um if we're talking about growth mindset and if we're talking about stepping outside of our comfort zone um well this morning and this right now this moment is me uh stepping into the unknown for you all you know because i love you all so much uh that i'm willing to do that it embarrass myself if that happens but um this song is a song that many of you may remember it um we did it a couple years ago at the black history month assembly we did it a couple years ago um the following year at a chorus concert and in it and it's inspired by the chorus um goes something like this and i i would love it if you all at home sing with me even though i can't hear y'all i can feel y'all and so it goes like the day it's on ah the day it's on its way couldn't wait no more hear it come ready or not let's try so it's the day it's the day is on its way it couldn't wait no more here it comes ready or not you know what what better lyrics for black history month right you know um and i think you all are learning about black history month you're learning about the importance of these things um but we also know that for black people a lot of the history we've learned and the reality of what black people still don't want to talk about it you know and and believe it or not there's still people who don't even want to talk about black history and and if we don't talk about black history well then we turn on the news and we're going to keep seeing these things that we keep seeing we're going to keep seeing the struggle we're going to keep having to revisit these conversations because these are the same conversations that i had when i was an elementary school student and a lot of these conversations are the same conversations that our parents had and our grandparents had and so we're not doing them any service if we're still having the same conversations because if we're having the same conversations that means the needs are the same and if the needs are the same that means we aren't doing enough to make this world the world we need to do so the day is on its way it couldn't wait no more here it comes ready or not and so that's us saying you know despite what history has said despite everything else and despite people maybe not wanting to talk about this or despite people having hate in their hearts or despite people um feeling a way about people who look like me and who look a lot of you who are on the stream right now the day is on its way equality is coming right and we've read that in a lot of your poems right if only we can see it if only we can feel it right uh or i'm getting those lyrics wrong but you know this is this is our world and so if you want to sing that one more time today it's on its way couldn't wait no more here it comes ready or not it's not in my range but it's in y'all's this is what i do for y'all i sing outside of my range for you all right so um a part of this is again the same poem that um miss holmes just read my angels i rise and i put that to music and another part is commons verse one of commons verses to the movie selma uh from the song glory and then the last verse is another maya angelou poem called equality and so if you know those you're more than welcome to to say them with me but if you don't you can just come in on the course and we're going to catch a vibe [Music] so you may shoot me with your words [Music] i'll rise here it goes [Music] here we go justice is just a position in us justice for all ain't specific enough one son died of spirit is revisiting us [Music] shots [Music] on no more here it goes [Music] and i will be free equality and i will be free you're the temple so compelling [Music] couldn't wait no more [Music] here [Music] here all right well thank you all so much for letting me be here and be a part of it um remember black history is is all year and so i really like to emphasize that for me when february first hit nothing changed for me because this is the history i always learn and i always make it a point and i feel like everybody needs to because i'm thinking of another game that's my bad but little flush behind the goal it's wrapped around now lafleche gets it again so navoni breaks for the first time spartans have it not in it at one i think that's the only the first goal he's let in on his pass like 30 or so shots been playing outstanding hockey gobek tries to throw a little hit there takes one he's got an equipment issue he'll escape back to the bench that puck will go for an icing chris sherwood and taylor have some words i'm telling you that after that last call he had some words for people then he's still going it reminds me of marshawn a little bit yeah martian a little bit that's a bit of a jump chris sherwood to brad martian guy well not not unlike the goal is going apart like his nature yeah i love it chris sherwood transferring back from williston along with his twin brother colin and net oh so that's the school they went to yep i always comes out to the top and an absolute snipe i saw that shot one heck of a cash in looks like 2-1 looks like sherwood was screened on that shot too really didn't see it until the puck was halfway towards the net so terriers cash in the icing east long meadow cameron colette cashes in for the terrors 2-1 spartans got a battle back here now haynes trying to work it to sherwood can't chris sherwood knocked into the boards clean hit felt that over here haynes runs into a man we're starting to see some extremely big hits here game's starting to get physical definitely more action this period than the first do you gotta say that so sherwood's been beat twice navoni once it's been quite the match up to watch between the two of them on either ends of the ice i'm telling you these some of these westside kids are huge oh yeah like they're big boys i mean we got cj he's a pretty big boy kendrick he's he's pretty tall but like i've seen at least like five west side kids that's gotta be over six feet now the terror is trying to add to their one goal lead they lead 2-1 damon polk dragging in he almost buried one that's someone you want with the puck that close especially that kid's been everywhere tonight also i dig the gloves might say the buffalo sabers a little bit and now walking in shot goes wide another one thrown in aiden fisher now he seems to be out of gas puck is deflected up but not out good move now the terrier is entering the zone with speed poke check from t shark now he tries to lay a hit behind the goal now go back sherwood trying to find it scary moment for the spartans there puck is worked back teddy kum with a nice cut move gets around him in teddy kun all alone gets a shot it's lifted up and out of play i love what i just saw at a cune right there i don't know about you but i want to see more of that under three minutes now in period two am i seeing the square do the spartans have three goalies yep i forgot um colin sherwood and then colby law and patrick mcgillicuddy mcgillicuddy something like that i'm digging the green helmet over there though probably mcgillicuddy the irishman [Applause] and puck is sent in that will go for an icing backpack dangerous breakaway there oh we got a rival filmer over there hmm unfortunately their film will probably be better than ours because i think they're offline yeah definitely filming it for west sides purpose not for the viewers purpose [Music] haynes loses the draw now hit into the boards of sherwood and he's taken down haynes trying to keep it alive for the spartans o'brien puck comes up and out of play now luke haynes ties it up sherwood chips it out sherwood is tipped over oh terrier goes down after blocking the shot from o'brien puck is sent in no icing sure would now it was a little high now puck swung in front it's deflected and [Music] tied up is arnold and goes into the catching glove of sherwood 201 to go period two spartans trailer goal after the snipe from colette and now [Music] teddy kun run into aiden fisher trying to get to the puck and now taking down his dobeck his stick got tied up there won't be a call for that i mean this could just be me but do you see the spartans on their heels a little bit since west side has scored that goal i just the spartans have struggled to find offense ever since the aguam game a team they were probably better than significantly yeah spartans have had trouble generating chances against the terriers tonight and last night i mean spartans have had i'd say two good chances and they cash in on one of them now chris sherwood is deflected up and out of play yeah but to go along with my point there i mean you're definitely correct their offense has been a little quiet when i say a little quiet very quiet but i i think they stick to the game plan they got a goal off a deflection they just got to get bodies in front of me and pucks on net really just comes down to the basics 104 to go arnold getting into it and pass in front haynes trying to find a home for that one great passing on display that by spartans though i believe that was sherwood down low again chris sherwood seemed to be right place right spot and generating chances yeah it seems like he knows who to give the puck to every time he touches it remember that touch pass in the first period too and then obviously the pass to travis has set up the goal deflected in by monroe puck comes out to the point arnold trying to keep it alive 40 seconds to go period two we're gonna have a brief intermission but anyways terriers neutral zone comes back to o'brien and now chad o'brien trying to start something for east long meadow is he related to liam o'brien yep younger brother as well as jack o'brien former goalie for east longmeadow sherwood's been taking some hits he's not happy six seconds to go period two sure would follow the official around still not very happy and i i i would agree with him there's been some but there's definitely been some calls missed spartans so i'm not gonna hold the rest to that i mean sherwood not to like hit on the guy but he's not the biggest guy so he's more prone to hits six seconds ago spartans may have one more big shot fisher tries to step through la flesh getting a bomb off he misses the net and we go to the second intermission scores 2-1 alec nero able to cash in on the tip on the shot from arnold and cam colette with a snipe making it 2-1 terriers we have 15 more minutes stay with us here in lcat we're just going to an intermission game's not over a few people missed out on that we're going to work on our connection maybe try a hot spot but in the meantime sit tight grab something to eat and get ready for the third period here on elkcat you we're getting set for the third period of action spartans down 2-1 navoni has been solid for the terriers he's number nine right no he's like that kobe law almost took out the ref spartans in a big third period it's been a struggle to find offense thus far they had the bomb from arnold that led to the nero tip but that's about it that's just intimidating they're just louder than us there were periods set to go and breaking news tuned in the former amherst captain eli sloven tuning into the action happy to have him on board starting a tuesday night talk show on its instagram at eli sloven if you want to check that out first one was tonight definitely give it a follow as we are set for the third period of action huh so they can hear us who can hear us like the people because we're we having difficulties with that i'm so confused and what you're talking about but anyways we go into the corner boards they're just brain dead and now looking for sherwood neutral ice cam colette is stapled and sherwood will leave it behind the net for calogy and now luke haynes the other way for east longmeadow trying to enter the zone and nero caught offside lou kane's not happy though but he's just being too cute with the puck 14 20 to go devin dobeck alongside brennan mclaughlin live here from olympia ice center on lcat we are sorry for all the connection problems we've been having but again it was olympia as players taken down spartans trying to pull something together this third period it's been pretty much all terriers all night dobek on the draw for east long meadow he whacks at it terrors the other way now chad o'brien behind the net terrors throwing on sherwood pad save now in the corner scrum for the puck dobeck trying to pin a man in now chad o'brien trying to get it up to teddy kun teddy kun cross ice gets it over to fisher some good puck movement from east long meadow and it's sent on in dobeck will chase and now kung [Music] dovak walks in and whacks at one goes right over the goalie's head teddy kun now a deep move and then he tries to slap one on goal no o'brien now behind the goal terrier taken down rest have been wetting them letting them play tonight and i think we're gonna get a puck frozen in the corner boards i mean that could be just me but looked like dobeck might have tripped him but as we're saying wrestling him play 1309 to go period three it's been a good night of action unfortunately our stream has been a little brutal because of uh the olympia wi-fi we're just going to keep hammering that because it's not el cat it's not us to blame but we sincerely apologize for olympia on behalf of them nero puck is deflected up and now la flesh picked off by nero the goal scorer for east long meadow in the neutral zone i think he deflected it if it's travis's it'll be brutal but he just brings a man in and he's been due to go yeah he just ran into the west side kid the freshman to the box 44 to go in period three spartans go to the kill haven't been too many penalties we saw a couple early on the terrors i believe this is the spartans first and there have been plenty of opportunities to call them i just still can't get over the travis slash right in front of me and i was like oh and then yeah even the time keeper said he didn't see it i thought it was pretty blatant right but yeah anyways terriers did end up retaining the one goal lead so i guess all things kind of worked out but colette now walking in throws it in front and now battling in front it's covered up by sherwood yeah a great play there by kyung to deflect the puck 12 20 to go period three spartans interiors in a physical battle 136 to go on the penalty kill hopefully the quality is better for you back at home again we have no way of knowing i mean i don't know dante just asked me what the score was so dante have said it a few times brother it's 2-1 terrors [Applause] and now walking in for the terriers cj calogy trying to shove him off puppy comes out to the point pass down low in the circle a low shot pad save sherwood and puck is cleared closing in on one minute left on the nero penalty [Applause] coach reed using his vocal cords over on the bench 11 30 to go chris sherwood a great play to keep the zone for east london chris sherwood's been all over the ice kid's having a great game [Music] and now luke haynes on the four check i'm loving this doing some great time on the penalty kill another 30 seconds go by there luke haynes with a great four check i think he wasted like a good 30 seconds as he said sherwood pinning a man in the boards and there's some clear roughing there referees looked at him and just said boys cut it out we're letting him play terrier goes down now entering the zone he's going to definitely be offside the injured man nero gets out of the box just as the whistle's grown spartans back to even strength with 10 44 in period three brennan what are the spartans got to do to get on the board and try and get a point out of this one i mean i just keep by hammering the nail just go back to the basics they scored a goal by just getting shots on net just hope they get deflections just play physical which they've been doing it's just you gotta stick to the game plan a little bit that penalty kill right there by haynes and sherwood off the charts and now cune looked like he had some fire in his eyes i just connected with him i mean we were gassed up we haven't said much about this first line like i haven't heard much out of dobeck i haven't heard much out of cune like i've heard fisher's name like quite a bit but not much of them too reid's been mixing up the lines a little bit yeah spun around now is fisher he tries to spit it out to dobeck and teddy kun buries a man who actually tried to hit him but you don't do that now dovak walking in rips a shot ex extremely wide yo the dog might have been deflected a little bit your brother gets stronger i feel like there's some pepper on the shots now definitely um yeah another year of hockey and working out definitely helped him braid sauce is in the gym though oh he's got a home gym home gym i love that for the kid dumps it in and they're gonna is it gonna be an icing i think they're going to call in icing 9 41 to go period 3.

definitely a strong move tough call for the spartans gives charge a little bit of momentum score is now 13-15 with 10 on the line for one and it's off but 10 gets his own rebound oh another foul on the keck knee it looked like all ball but he may have gotten a little body in there that's two on mckechnie now he doesn't seem to like that call he's kind of arguing with it all right four spartans up to three fouls and chag still has four and it's good [Applause] all right he has one more left score scores now 13-16 with seven minutes left in the second quarter abad just subbed out mckechnie for donaldson yeah that was a good move he's a good player and has two fouls already definitely save him for the end donaldson gives him some good height though yep hopefully he'll help him out with the rebounds kamara's with the great rebound good pressure by chong trying to get rid of that strong pass to sweeney and a foul that was a great player from behind that was a laser pass that was huge baseball through that yeah definitely all day donaldson on the block and he's the shed he just came in and already hit him hopefully that picks up spartan's pace and a turnover frogs collided good over and back looks like it was also a kick too yeah maybe either rice ball sub 22 comes in for 11.
