uh that's when we're looking at possibly occupying that building in order to avoid you guys having to sign additional uh leases uh um and and also at that point i think your population will be at the point where you could definitely utilize a centralized early childhood center thank you a lot of work a lot of money yeah well yeah you know what kids are worth it yeah i i think the mayor is going to want to have you pay for my salary and dance salary since we're going to be basically working for you guys for the next five years i know look at you you got all upset that's okay let's put it on our tab i enjoy working with you guys honestly building schools is something that i really love doing and uh you guys have allowed us to do some really creative projects and uh and and we love that and we have an incredible respect with the school grants folks they really like what we do down here and uh and uh we're probably one of the only school districts that when we say we're going to build something we not only build it but it's done it's finished and we go right through the audits so uh that is that is a really nice partnership that we've built and thank you for that that's a testament to you now it's it's really a relationship that we built early on you guys have trusted us to do this for you and it's worked out really well anyone that enjoys um looking at a project and can actually visualize how it's going to come out of the earth and look and look like it's supposed to so kudos to you thank you thank you and dan i know i got to thank dan he's back there he does a lot of them day-by-day work so uh mr britton next thing i know he uh he's got to go but anything that any questions for antonio or i'm good um does anybody else have any amy kathy you good okay yeah we can keep we can keep pushing on dr cell and mr chairman anytime you wanna us to update you um uh you know just let us know we'll gladly kind of give you an update um i think you kind of know what we're doing for the next six months uh but if you uh and you'll probably see us at the board of education meeting next week too but anytime you want to um have your members uh get filled in with some of the specifics uh let us let us know yeah absolutely thank you antonio for that thank you antonio thank you glenn hey yeah thank you glenn um so for the board uh granville uh let me update john granville go ahead kel um so granville we are currently occupying six of the classrooms as well as several office spaces that's the top floor um so all uh six classrooms uh were are set up for students they're receiving am and pm kids um the bottom floor is still um on its way to being completed uh you know we um expect it to be done i don't know about a month i'm gonna say i'm not a construction person but it looks like we've got a little bit a little bit of a ways to go um but i can't say enough um you know rich albert and his team were just amazing i mean we we got the ceo and clearance the mayor uh on a tuesday afternoon and by friday classrooms were set up and the kids came in on monday so i mean it was an extremely quick turnaround um it feels like a preschool you walk in there's splashes of color on the wall they did some um like uh some of those like stickers that have animals and trees and and fun things like that um the kids are loving it they've adjusted really really well um the first day or two in we did have it was a little bit challenging these students hadn't been uh into school in a while and they were then being dropped off at a building that they didn't know but once they saw their teachers and they moved their way in they were thrilled um i also um you know we're excited to occupy the bottom floor because then we'll be able to bring over a majority of our preschool classrooms there's 10 classroom spaces in total we have 11 preschools currently preschool classrooms so we just exceed the size of the building i do know at one point there was a conversation about whether or not there could be additional spaces maximized on the back end of that building so that's something we should definitely still explore but it certainly meets um you know meets our current needs right now to have a majority of our classes there we will remain one classroom at sacred heart for next school year and we're also looking at creative ways from a preschool perspective of doing some of our services in the community which may eliminate the need for that 11th classroom full-time you know in one of our facility spaces so um certainly what we've noticed already is the um you are maximizing the amount of service time that's being provided in one location so our pt's our ots our speech and language pathologists are not traveling all over the building you know just naturally being together in one site as opposed to three there's more teaming and collaboration right now those providers are in temporary spaces office spaces and are doing push and support into the classroom um but overall i can't say enough good things teachers are happy they're thrilled they've kind of rolled with it we've had a few little bumps in the road but but overall it's been it's been really a very positive thing for the city um to finally have a pre-k center so thank you do you know when you're going to occupy the other section rich put a little note in here i'm he said he'd be able to turn over the bottom floor by the end of february oh okay okay so so for the board either rich or courtney can update him it when we displace osborne and what do we have for for people to uh occupy you want to update the board a little bit please or so um so kelly worked with marie that's our partner over at sacred heart to ensure that we have some we have space for anne's team at sacred heart so we're leveraging that existing lease and our partnership there for the next year for albion's staff in the reservation group and rich worked with our partner bill coffey to find a space at a reasonable price just up the road from beaver brook and they've gone ahead and renovated some office space for his snap as well as um a significant amount of storage space that's needed for all the equipment that's been crammed in um to if you've ever been into the upper stories over at um over at osborne you'll you'll know what i mean that we really we're in dire need of space do you want to um just talk a little bit have you been over rich recently and seen the um the renovations i think it's pretty close to being ready to move in um i took a peek over there last week and um there there are some concrete floors that he's put carpeting in on the offices he the existing carpeting he had professionally cleaned um we're still waiting for the warehouse space to be vacated so we can start using that but i expect we should be able to move in at least office space wise in the next month or so over there yeah so that was great so that was uh just for a year because as you know from what antonio just talked about the osborne um replacement which is the ellsworth annex is on track to be on time for their anticipated um construction time frame as we stand today [Music] uh time on time is very good news more advanced notice than poor bob who you know operates [Music] yes yes we're going to move central registration elp and one person from sodexo will move over to um the cottage street location kelly will keep a classroom i have three classrooms downstairs we'll take the other two classrooms and either somehow divide them up and put in temporary stations in there for our registration folks and our elp folks and then i'd love to still have one classroom for the learning tree so that will absolutely work for the next year plus while we're out of osborne street once granville is available we will work with rich and his team to transition those kids over sometime in springtime this year we're hoping to have that done um on our about april vacation great so just okay and move to save getting furniture and all that stuff is is what we're moving around but i think one of the things uh the board has asked for which is going to work into is this three-year budget because we have to plan with the end in mind occupying uh the summit occupying the even even the early childhood center in terms of um you know what we have to do as we go one things the board we did when we opened stem you remember we brought frank on dr levanka on board so you may have to do that with the summit bring someone on board earlier things of that nature to get things going so this three year rollout gives us at least some targeting at least it'll get let the city know what we're thinking um what worked for us at um at um stem at the new place at west side academy was that we phased in so that's what he was hinting towards um you know that's that's something that could work for us uh so um you know we'll put that in the three-year budget but i think you know we have the space we've been fortunate to have the city support these new new buildings for us it's really going to accommodate our needs for quite a while i don't know if there's anything else joe um update you quick on rogers park you know we had um a customized doors front doors this morning that were done by a car inadvertently and i think rich you won't tell the board what we're doing so they know with that sure um the the good news is uh those entry doors were uh in the works of being replaced anyways we had plans to replace it so i think it's just expediting the replacement of those front doors um i had public buildings go over there they shored up the doors uh until they can get them replaced the left two out of the three are unusable at this point but luckily egress wise uh most of the stairwell exits are being used for the students there's only about 14 or 15 staff that are using that front entrance door we also had a broken window on one of the food trucks and they siphoned up some out some gas on two of the food trucks so school lunch has brought those trucks to get looked at make sure they didn't put anything in the gas tank that would damage the vehicles hey rich why don't you tell them to put the lock caps on that no i'm thinking about it i just made that recommendation to them today okay good there you go and so we did get those quotes for the extra cameras that you asked for even though it was in the back in the front at rogers park so yeah yeah and the board knows they did apprehend the person um there was no threat against the school he's just angry at something domestically and um you know just went on a spree according to chief ritenhauser question i'm sorry kathy go ahead sorry will insurance pay for that damage now well i think what um there's an ordinance down they're going to go after the person that damaged it but we won't have to wait for that the city will have to replace it and i'm sure he'll try to build us quite rich that's true that's true yeah but they do go after for insurance everything they can we'll work with them you know they did give us that reimbursement for that big sprinkler break two years later right rich but exactly good good the usual sorry just that uh main entrance store uh because it's the door in the door frame you're talking probably about twenty thousand dollars just for that one main entrance rich just to make sure i have i i understand it so we're using the stairwells on the ends to come for most of the students to come in and out of anyway so we're not most of all even using that door right correct uh it's part of part of the plan uh to open up during uh you know the pandemic we want to use as many entrants as possible ironically when i went there which we lost you joe yeah joe you're you cut out there you lost them i can't picture joe speechless um sorry no thank thank you rich when i had gone there we had used those indoors anyway 30 you know 35 years ago so the past is now the future thanks mr britain anything else i i have nothing else i'll open it up one last time anybody can have any last last questions or are we good all right seeing none uh i'll entertain a motion to adjourn so moved maybe is there a second second mr russo all those in favor thank you everybody for coming tonight i appreciate it i appreciate all your hard work bye guys have a good night guys good night you

the two strengths i like the two things i really like about model uh three all levels a levels model 2.0 sorry i think of them more as the title um one that it maintains uh the most elementary school campuses um and that it is um very similar to what we do now which i think will be beneficial to a lot of parents to um navigate the model because it's more most like our current structure um as a parent i like proceeding with the reconfiguration and not um tabling it however maybe this five-year time period seems a bit long maybe the first year or two we we pause um decide on a plan but sort of pause the moving the children around um i definitely do not um within the the the two models that i like would not would not prefer to keep i don't know how to say it correctly um would like the sixth graders to promote uh instead of being left alone at the campus especially with a model 3 they should promote to the middle school and that's it thank you a parent of a elementary student that would like to go next [Music] gracias another elementary parent i'm sorry i'd also like to add that um i like uh models um three but perhaps we could look at not um perhaps we could eliminate the tk8 do we have uh sonia ramirez with us today uh do we have kimberly reels with us here today do we have reena galvez with us here today okay uh elementary parents anyone else have an lblb statement that they would like to add all right i'm going to reset my clock my timer i'm going to put 10 minutes on here and aea is going to bring us home uh with lbl's lb lb statements i like because or i like butt and your 10 minutes start now we are going to round robin because we are teachers and we do that um i like model 3 because 67 of teachers prefer this configuration edna i like model 4 but suggested be tk instead of tk5 and the high school's bt i mean the high schools be 7 12.

is that correct joy or yeah so i could speak to um the walk through that we just had also to give some clarification on the actual number two that we have there so we did a walk through with the nbc in tucked on on the 13th and the goal of that walkthrough was to find efficiencies and help the overall cost so techton is hoping to have an estimate by the end of next week so this would also include a new schematic design and plan i can give you like a quick kind of overview of some of the cost reduction measures that were discussed and brought to the forefront during the walk through and um tecton's proposal to us at our facilities meeting so one thing was the lockers most can be used or are in good shape they just a lot of them just need to be refurbished or repaired so there'll be cost savings for that the coach's office we can use the existing door frame and take out the pane of glass and put a door there the bathrooms that are would be accessible to the outside we would make more standardized showers and not have the big ones that were originally proposed and we would expand the bathroom into the storage area the training rooms we thought we would need to put in a structural beam and that most likely isn't the case now uh the ceilings we want to really maintain the skylights or the natural lighting and we're going to use spray insulator so you know obviously since then costs have changed since we last met but we're expecting to see savings for the ceilings and all the structural work that was brought to the attention having on the nbc coming on board and helping us through this process so um we may not have an actual bid you know to put out but we're you know requesting at least a placeholder so that we can move forward with you know with the project and still have a sense of urgency so that we can budget for it and act on it instead of slowing down the process we want to really improve this you know approve this in the capital year to at least get it started in 2022-2023 and i can add a little bit to that the the additional design funding is what techdon has told us they will need to bring the schematic designs up to the point where we can actually use that to go out to bid to get a firmer number great thank you what we're hearing here is that the 1.3 million is a high number and that you've been able to generally to start with review and adjust and a final number will probably come in somewhat less than that is that a fair assessment i'd say that's a fair sign that's a fair headline 35 000 to get to that point where we can actually go out to bid and i think i also heard that we'll have more information by the time we're doing budget deliberations with the board of finance they're hoping by next week and next week most of this is the same that we had from last year right because just to remind people we could not do any of our bonded uh projects last year so we lost an entire year because we couldn't hold a referendum while the executive orders from the governor did allow us to adopt the budget by the board of finance on behalf of the town it did not allow us to adopt uh borrowing so we're kind of a year behind here so it's really important we get this right because we're we're really behind the eight ball here on everything out of curiosity what are the executive orders for this year in terms of referendums no you can you can you could have you could hold a referendum at any time as long as you could guarantee it was safe and during the middle of the pandemic last year no one felt it was safe to have a referendum but now that we've had a presidential election and virtually uh you know 90 percent of the voters in brookfield went to that it was safe we did not have any jump in cases after that everyone did it safely i'm very comfortable and i think it's important that we do hold a referendum so i think my plan is as long as everyone agrees is that we will hold the referendum for operating and capital in the schools right for both with you operating for both and in capital i think it's important people want to vote and i think they should get the opportunity to do so yep i agree with you i completely agree with you any other questions yes rosa um at the bottom of this page the district uh maintenance vehicle which one is that ken do you have uh specifics on that vehicle i would ask dean i think dan's on the call he can probably tell us exactly which one it is yes we're looking to uh replace a three-quarter ton pickup currently we we no longer have a snow plow or four-wheel drive vehicle in our fleet um and that would get us back to where we we do some snow maintenance there while it's not a funded position at this time there is there is a uh an open maintenance mechanic position and that would be a vehicle if that were to be filled we would require that so that our mechanics would all have the ability to uh have an individual vehicle wouldn't be be sharing but that fifty thousand we worked at when jerry gate was still with us and that was for a four-wheel drive utility body with a snowflower okay and what what was what what else were you talking about as far as um was it mechanics or something is are we going to is there a need for an additional uh fte with this i i didn't quite get that no it's not but currently there is a uh position and ken can you can you help me on position and i'd also say that the the maintenance vehicles we have right now are uh quite old and quite worn and quite subject to needing repairs that's accurate i just had a question on the a couple of the items um the whiskaner electrical service and the exterior windows at vhs those numbers are the same as last year's capital but do we know with the supply chain issues due to the pandemic whether or not those numbers will go up or are we getting a new bid on them or estimate these numbers were estimates from the building condition survey that tecton did and the the things like plumbing fixtures and equipment and windows those are multi-phase projects so we would have to go out to bid at the time and do what we can with that and use that information to gauge the future parts of the project i mean can we get some industry estimate i just know everybody that i've talked to in any sort of constructiony type of field that the the cost of everything has gone up significantly 20 30 40 isn't uncommon so i just i just want to make sure that we're looking at real numbers when it comes down to the months of looking into having the deliberations you know what i think i'll do i mean i'll circle back to techdon and have them revisit those numbers and see if i can get some input from them and how they feel uh these need to be changed or not thank you anyone else with questions okay i think we can take this slide down thanks um so i don't think there's anything else on our agenda tonight um does anybody have any questions before before we adjourn well i'd just like to say i really really like that the budget format you've done especially the questions i think that you can see there's a lot of questions tonight that have already been answered and i want to thank you all for all the great work you've done and for you know eileen cook and marcia sitting in on the finance committee meetings helped a lot i think to get everybody to the same level of understanding and i really appreciate it it's it's really nice to see so thank you i would like to to thank you all for the hard work you put in on this and uh how you attacked it and how you uh drove down to the questions i think this is what we asked for last year from the board of finance it wasn't what you had in there it was the full understanding of the numbers and driving it down to a you know a solid number so i don't know where the the board of selectmen is going to take this budget and i think that's the next step we all have to wait on and then uh we'll take it from there but i'd like to to thank you all for your hard work and thank you all for uh working with eileen marsha as we talked about last year and i i think this budget season started off on a great note uh it doesn't mean it's going to be easy for all of us but i i think it really did start off on a great note and i'd like to thank rosa bob and all of the staff for getting us to this stage so thank you yeah thank you and it was great working with uh eileen and marcia in those finance committee meetings it was really helpful and it felt very collaborative this year so it was very nice so anybody on the board of finance have a question for anybody not at this time i i think from our side we're good then steve yeah no sue harry i think you're good i think we've answered our questions we appreciate it thank you i want to thank you all for all your support all right so uh then without objection the board of education special meeting is adjourned same thing for the board of selection board of finance as well thank you thanks everyone night night you

jen sorry about that i like model 4 because of teachers in azusa think it is the one model that actually accomplishes the goal of filling all schools to maximum capacity i like models three and four because students at middle school will get daily pe i like model 3 because it most resembles our existing configuration but with less sites for oh sorry edna go ahead i like model 4 because it facilitates vertical articulation between the junior high and the high school curriculum i like model 4 because it preserves electives for middle school students i like model 3 but would like to see sixth grade stay at elementary school i like model 3 because it maintains traditional junior heights the traditional junior high experience which prepares students for high school while allowing for a tk8 option for parents that still feel their child can benefit from a more elementary style setting i like model 4 because it encourages middle school students to remain at high school if they start in middle school at the same site i like models 3 and four because middle school students will get each of their subjects daily i like model three but would like to explore the consequences of one large middle school and one large high school i like model 4 because it maintains the high the junior high experience while maximizing our modern our most modernized facilities which are the high schools i like model 4 because it preserves the elementary environment which allows in elementary schools to focus more on helping students attain basic skills for more advanced learning i like model 3 but i'm concerned about the plan not having appropriate counselor staffing to student ratio i like model 3 but would like to explore the establishment of counselor to student ratios as well as resource teacher and assistant principal ratios i like models three and four because they allow for teachers that specialize in certain subject areas specifically in the higher levels i like model 4 because it builds richer programs and vibrant communities throughout the district when our school sites are full and have many teachers to offer their talents to students i like models three and four because this will build the arts stem and other programs at the high school level i like model 3 but would encourage a three-year phase-in plan i like model 4 because it would strengthen our sports programs and clubs by having the junior high students feel vested in the high school that they are already a part of i like model three but would maximize capacity at all school sites with one seven eight intermediate school and one high school i like model 3 because there is more choice for parents with the most elementary schools i like model 3 simply because it includes more traditional middle school options and i also like model 3 because it allows for a dual immersion program at the middle school edna are you done she is all right i like model 4 because i think um it would but i think a 712 model will be better for our students um and for the developmental stage that seventh graders are in but sixth graders should remain at elementary especially since we've just moved them there go ahead margie joe moore i'm trying to say anything that has not been said yet i like models um three and four because middle school will have rigorous academic um and credential aligned electives for students and this is my last one team i like model 3 because of the dual immersion program continuing at the middle school and this is my last one this is not for a particular model but our teachers overwhelmingly preferred models three and four but feel that it should shorten the transition years to three instead of five or possibly six for full implementation uh because the a five-year stretch of disruption to staffing as teachers leave one site and then also gain at another site is very difficult not to mention the kids margie anything else i like models three and four because our itinerant teachers namely in the music program will not have as difficult schedules as they currently have and that's a team anything else thank you i appreciate that uh first and foremost uh congratulations uh and thank you uh for sharing your insights sharing um your opinions sharing your suggestions uh sharing your ideas um and sharing a piece of you with us like i stated at the beginning uh there is no wrong lblb tonight um everyone is entitled uh to their opinion or their their way of of seeing of seeing um we have a another another meeting uh scheduled for i believe it's next wednesday yep next wednesday and so uh well what we what we probably are gonna start to to do um is start thinking about uh tonight uh thinking about uh the data of tonight um and start maybe contemplating um do do do we as a school reorganization team um do we start making decisions in terms of us uh the models for example this is not scientific data we're gonna make sure that we go back and and really look at it but just some first impressions just based on tonight just a quick uh some first impressions uh first impressions uh tonight uh secondary parents uh from the lbl state alby lb statements that were um that were that were uh shared tonight uh model three in that group not the group as a whole but the voices in that group model three uh seem to be uh the the model uh to gain more uh most uh attraction um for aea it was it was close so i would say it was too close i would say that based on what we heard tonight um models three and four uh are the models uh that the aea group um were were most of the the positives came in those two groups uh for csea that one was aea was clear also because they didn't have any lblb and model ones or model twos but for csea model three as well that was the model uh of those lbl lb lb statements uh that were uh preferred for elementary parents um just like secondary parents model three uh seems like the the most preferred or the strongest model [Music] and then for administrators the administrative group model 3 also seemed to be the preferred group but they also had quite a bit to say in terms of alby albee statements about model 4.

for the secondary parents and the elementary parents um the the there was a little bit unter in terms of model one two and four uh there was close calls for the secondary parents uh but not as much as model three uh for the elementary parents model two uh not so much uh but model four and one again kind of right there uh but not as much as model three these are only first impressions this is not scientific data this is just me uh kind of just summarizing uh what i think i heard uh but again we're gonna have to go back and and talk and discuss so for instance when we come back next uh next time again these conversations about well based on what we heard do we start focusing our attention on models three and four like do we start honing in on on that and start thinking about the butts uh but uh one one but that i heard a lot to tonight was uh butt 712 not 612 right as an example right as an example um so you know to start having conversations uh around around that um we we have been keeping our board of education uh updated on what is happening uh with the school reorganization team and so uh they will continue to be uh updated uh as of right now uh they have not voiced into uh what is happening they have been listeners just like we have been listeners to you uh tonight as well so once again i appreciate uh your feedback i appreciate uh your comments um again it helps us as a team uh to start thinking about next steps and formulating next steps the idea here is um is again to try and and get to um some ideas of where what what we want to report uh to the board of education um so i look forward to uh seeing you next week i just want to thank uh latasha jorge uh and dana uh for again their input and their collaboration uh i want to thank all of you for your input and i want to do a special thank you to sam who is driving our zoom uh tonight and of course to melissa who's doing an amazing job i'm sorry to michelle who's doing an amazing job with the translation so thank you everyone have an awesome good night uh we will see you if not before uh next weekend next week thank you

by chance it's a little bit dark and hard to see sure how about um here let me get more yeah i do have another little camera that would be great too because i can see a little bit maybe torso yeah let me do thank you um how's that that better that's good yes okay great um so uh thank you everyone i guess we're on agenda item one call to order uh and and roll call uh so it looks like we've done that um the next point item two the review of the strategic playing to date um you know i just wanted to take the moment just to orient everyone into where we are uh you know we we took a look uh a few months ago at the you know kind of the we brainstormed some ideas early on uh as to what the strategic plan could be and then we had another work study session in the fall where we surveyed i think there are about 18 or so strategic plans from different school districts in arizona from different schools for the deaf and for the blind in western states uh california colorado texas utah uh some others we looked at school districts in maricopa county and pima county and other areas in arizona and we got an idea of you know what their strategic plans look like what they were you know what was important to them what their goals were and and from there we went into the other work study session after that where we we took a look at uh what are our you know what are our pillars what we call them what are our big tent poles uh and we had some consensus on that um we've we've created that now uh and then the next work study session the most recent one that we had was we we found some consensus on what is the uh the the priorities or the guiding principles and the priorities of the agency underneath these pillars uh so if i think as i've said before we've we've gotten the the the top part of the sheet done um so now we're moving down uh into the uh into the next part um and that's gonna be the uh the next item uh if we move to item three ex uh explanation of today's tasks and you know today's task is really to take a look at the you know the specific goals or the specific areas by which we're going to measure uh how the strategic plan is progressing over the the time that you know the time horizon here so yeah about six years or so here is going to be we're going to take a look at what the administration has provided and give her feedback on that um and and i think the way that i approach it is you know this part of the document that the bottom part of the strategic plan as i as i like to call it is going to tell us you know we we know that we're going to have succeeded when something so you know we'll know that we're successful when we see this and these are going to be the specific metrics or the specific goals or the specific areas where we're gonna you know continually monitor over time in which the the staff will report to the board over time with with some regularity maybe not necessarily every board meeting for every metric but uh certainly a number of them every board meeting um in their various reports and from there we'll be able to gauge our progress towards what we think success is under this under this plan um you know from my perspective and again we'll get into this when we get into the uh review the materials here we this isn't necessarily a discussion of saying we're going to take step x and y and z and then we have success when we've done that when we've taken those steps i think the the way that i view it anyway and i'm certainly open to input everyone's input on it is let's define what success is going to be for us and then later through the next year and two years in three years of the strategic plan let's take some of those actions and see if we get the success that we think so if we have an idea for plan x or y then we'll you know we could do it we could discuss it as a board and we could do it or not do it but we're going to measure its success by how well is it is it furthering our our goals on our strategic plan um are we getting closer to those goals uh or not um and if we are great and if we don't we'll have to you know re-route and do something else so that's um you know so for today we're really going to be looking at these specific goals that are kind of underneath our priorities and our guiding principles um and see do they do they support those guiding principles are they uh are they consistent with those do we have to change them do we have to go back to the staff uh to kind of rethink things um and we're gonna go through each one of them uh you know as as they've been presented so they were presented to us last friday uh hopefully the boys got a chance to review them i know i have i have some notes uh and and we'll share it that way so if we can move on i mean uh superintendent reichman did you have any anything to add to that is there any other additional part that you would have to that when looking at the four pillars we look at the priorities and then we try to come up with the possible measurements or metrics so when you're looking at the metrics we want you to be thinking about what david just said how are we measuring success i've proposed many different ways of measuring success in one kind of measurement is a performance measurement so when you have a specific outcome or an output so really looking at the numbers quantifying the measurements of success so that performance metric could have also efficiency measure for example the cost per student receiving an education a year so that's an efficiency metric we can do it in that approach we can also have a measurement that looks at the process so the process that is occurring sometimes is not a straightforward measurement but if the process does occur you can reasonably assume that maybe we have met the priorities we also have products which means that we'll be publishing an annual report every year and that is a product that is delivered and again it may not be a straight measurement of the priorities but if we have a product and we can infer that the priorities are to be met so i want you to be thinking about the different types of metrics and measurements and that is how well they are aligned or fitted with our priorities here so that is one thought i'd like to share with you all another thought is an internal process when defining the priorities and the measurement we can internally delineate each of the leaders and delegate that priority so they have a smart goal that each individual is working to align with the metrics in accordance to the strategic plan so as you can see the alignment is there but that takes time i just had a conversation with david nigro about the process and how to put together and to finalize it in my perspective is it will take time to really figure out appropriate measures to figure out the quantitative qualitative the goals targets all of that so combined again it will take some discussions thoughts interactions with each of you in working with the board so nancy would you like to add anything particularly on that right now i believe that covers everything and that it's a process that we will in a journey that we'll work together on and we want to have a product as a strategic plan as quickly as possible but want it to be meaningful measurable and very strategic in our planning process yes so we have the four pillars each pillar has one person taking responsibility for that specific pillar i would be responsible for the first which is communication and collaboration and i will give give a brief overview about that after i present then the second pillar will be followed by dr kristin rex the assistant superintendent and she will give you an overview of her metrics in her proposal third pillar is the superb organizational culture which anita pyatt is here to present she's our hr executive director and the last is resource management which will be given by shaina cooper so these will be the overview of the proposed measures so that is our plan for today okay any questions before we start sounds great shelley here linda's saying yes oh annette hi annette i do have a quick question this looks good i appreciate the organization of the information in looking at pillar number two i do have a question there are a lot of items to review well we have enough time for dr kristin rex to review all of that i'm sure she's come with the concise way to be able to approach that information does she also have a committee she's working with to make sure that each point is accounted for the you know policy measurements etc i'm hoping she's not working alone and not lost in all of the work so what is your picture when working on pillar number two and that's saying yes each pillar will have a committee assigned as well i did not come up with the pillars exclusively i spoke directly with the communication department christian rex had her own committee she deliberated with and brainstormed ideas anita also is working with human resources in that group and shayna cooper is working with human resources information technology and business services so there are a lot of collaborators involved a lot of brainstorming and input yes absolutely okay and this is shelley hello um this is shelly speaking so on those committees can you mention who they are um are they solely asdb employees or do you have external stakeholders a part of those groups who are they um this is annette uh for now it's internal only okay um until we hand it over to the board thank you yep okay all right great thank you so i guess we can as we're moving on now to the the agenda item number four we're um looking at uh all of these uh the pillars we can start with pillar one um and uh that was uh superintendent eichmann's responsibility so i think the way we should uh likely proceeded superintendent directly if you can give us just a few minutes overview of what you're thinking when putting this together and then we can open it up for uh board comment uh on on the document okay so pillar number one does have three priorities the first priority to ensure first-rate customer service that one i really had me thinking how would we measure that first-rate customer service so i did have several ideas one idea would be to do a parent satisfaction survey um and we've already done that the last three or four years we do an annual parent satisfaction survey that's sent out to the parents and we can continue to do that and we would include that information in our report to the board so that's one idea the second idea is that you the board member would do my evaluation as a superintendent on an annual basis that's what you've been doing and an example of an indirect measurement of customer satisfaction would be whether or not you're satisfied with my work as superintendents and that would be your evidence and that would address the first-rate customer satisfaction so that's the second possibility for measurements draft and estimates the profile the agency profile and we've been doing that for the last three or four years during the recent january board meeting that agency profile was presented to you all and if you took the time to read the profile and compare it to three years prior and last year you can see how much work we've accomplished and what we've done thus far so that is another indirect measurement of customer satisfaction we have not developed an annual report and that it would be different from the agency profile but that could be another way of communicating with you all so that's our first priority in possible metrics and priority number two is to build capacity with school districts now how do we measure that our communication and satisfaction with school districts one proposal is we could do a satisfaction survey and we have been doing that with special education directors we send surveys out every year to ask for their satisfaction regarding our services provided to their students so that is one system of metrics that we can report to you as the board the second measurement is the output metrics and that just simply says that we will commit to attending the arizona council on administrative special education or case case that we would be there and participate in their meetings and discussions okay priority number three engage the community one possible idea and we've been doing this internally all along but we don't report it to the board we do a facebook and web page analysis where we look at how many people look on our facebook page how many people look at our websites and we can out do an analysis of how much time they're spending there on our social media sites and there's different numbers that we can analyze that shows the community interest and engagement in the information we're providing through social media and our web page the second is to establish a parent advisement group now we had recently established that and we are committed to doing that every six months so twice a year we will be meeting with a parent advisory group and we can report that information back to the board as to what feedback we've received from that group and the third is to do an agency newsletter for both internal stakeholders for asdb and our external state stakeholders who have interest in asdb we recently published our first newsletter just last week and sent that out and we've started that process and that's something we'd like to do on a quarterly basis so again that's a product that we can show to the board as far as our efforts to engage the community okay so that's my parts as far as pillar one goes any questions about that from the board members any input this is shelley herbolt thank you yes shelley shelley's saying hello um i do have four questions so please bear with me the first question so those proposed metrics we don't have to choose one or the other we can have multiple put together correct and let's say yes correct you can have multiple metrics for each my suggestion would be to limit it um perhaps two maybe four to each priority because if you have too many sources of measurement it becomes tricky to get collect that data so yeah picking one priority with just a few metrics is fine my second question so let's say it's not measurable is that something that would be addressed later after you select the metrics and you um figure out the percentages and the data i'm not really sure what the process is with that some measurements some of the metrics can be measurable and you can collect data you can collect numbers whereas some metrics you may not be able to collect numbers per se instead we would have a product such as the annual report and that would be satisfactory in place of the metrics or measurements okay this is shelley under priority one customer service is that applicable to all people um parents students staff stakeholders everyone that is correct okay and the reason i'm asking is it i don't know it seems limited to only parent surveys um and the board's evaluation on how you're doing um we're not including additional stakeholders and that's just something that i would like to think about so that's just another thought and so now my last question under priority three which talks about the website and facebook i want to say that not everybody has facebook or access to the websites so that's something to consider what are alternative ways that we're reaching reaching out so that's just my thoughts and that's all i have thank you and annette singh thank you okay okay who's managing the turn-taking and the questions linda's saying who's next uh i'm i'm i'm trying to to let the uh conversation flow as natural as we can on zoom i know linda you are probably next you had your camera open the next and then uh and then lynn and then mike and then the suitcase open as well um so there's a that that's loosely how we're going but okay great yeah just trying to be considerate of the interpreter uh making sure that we're not overlapping each other um you know it gets harder to keep track of the conversation so especially on zoom we want to honor turn taking um so just be aware of that mindful of that now i do want to follow up um shelly had some good questions when she spoke to social media and accessing the websites um and she's right we have to think about it most of us who live in arizona you know are there's a lot of people who are retired and don't have access to technology my husband he really doesn't know how i have to sit with him and walk him through it but anyway how else are we engaging the community with the school so how can we show true collaboration with the community is that clear annette i understand what i'm asking so not just facebook and social media we feel like that's not enough and i understand we're in the pandemic right now so it's a different situation but down the road how else will we engage the community how can we be creative with that so just something to think about because right now the community feels so disengaged from the school and the community really wants to be involved with events storytelling etc so that's just something to consider and we want to think more about to be honest i'm not sure that's something i have to think about melinda yes that's just something to put out there thank you okay my turn uh i'd like to piggyback on shelly when she was talking about customer service and who was included in that um we talked about parents the parent satisfaction the superintendent and then you said that also shelley you know was brought up the community but also staff do are we going to have a way to find out how they're feeling about how things are going first question and this second question is who is included on the parent advisory committee okay to address the first question in regards to staff we do have staff internal surveys so if you would like that report given to the board in one measurement we can certainly do that we paused the surveys because of covid last year but we are returning to doing that so this will be my third year in delivering services so last year we did not offer that but this year we are you starting that and we're doing it this year to answer your second question who is on the parent advisory committee we have 10 parents some that represent the schools some that represent the regional cooperatives and a few early learning program families i don't have the exact list of names at the moment but i can send that to you that's i just wanted to make sure we have a cross-section across the agency and it's not just brick and mortar or um right absolutely i agree and with the staff surveys yeah i i personally would like to see those and the results um just you know some thoughts i've had recently when when we get the reports from all all the different groups from courtney and from kelly and from early learning and whatever and all the co-ops we always hear all the wonderful glowing things that they want us to hear and i so want to hear all those wonderful things but i also want to know what they're struggling with too because i i feel that we as a board that's what we're here for is to help fix those things or help support those things but um you know if we know what the needs are as as well as what is working well um i'd like to see a little bit of that if that makes sense to anybody yes it does make sense thank you i think mike i think you you were next thank you um uh these i have a couple comments they uh sort of uh flow along with what shelley was saying um just as a point of clarity i know that um i've had similar discussions and we fell on not calling not using customer service but saying constituent service and that we're not in sales um just doesn't being part of the education community we might want to take a look at considering our folks constituents rather than like uh customers it's just a semantics question um building capacity with districts do we want to include districts and charters um in that those folks are also our stakeholders just to make sure that we're not um excluding sorry about that excluding our charter um and that the district survey that goes out um i'd be very interested in seeing how that's how that's uh done and to maybe take a look at what the um what those pieces look like um and we had talked about uh the principle of being engaging the community and then i just was a little confused about the mark marketing how that um uh how those two things are coordinated and i know we talked about like um facebook and those sort of multimedia pieces uh with uh um with that opportunity to engage have we have we thought about um i know some other programs have like a vision team or something where they take the kind of the thought leaders from the big some of our biggest constituent groups and um uh have a uh like a review the agency's vision but really do that with our um you know parent the parent group is wonderful but then also have something sort of similar with um our constituent groups to give them some insight into how the agency is doing where it's heading something beyond just a survey that might give us the full scope just some some initial thoughts from that first that first chunk so mike what you're suggesting that we do is important better engagement of the community in terms of that right and i think our constituents are part of the community so not to completely parse those two out but yeah to get a better sense of how our districts and charters are engaging us if there are concerns that might be scoped in that survey i think that would be good to to know and really understand and if we had thought about considering um uh like a thought team of that group to if there's issues or concerns all around any number of interactions that uh where districts interface with asdb if there are challenging pieces to perhaps have some of our bigger constituent groups come in and kind of i don't want to say airing of grievances but uh get an idea of where the rubber meets the road if there are issues to kind of hash that out i've seen those kind of i'm not going to say informal but more of like a thought leader vision team type group with constituent stakeholder people helping mitigate issues before they become bigger issues with some of the some of our constituents that might not have the footprint to be able to participate and really uh get to the bottom of some of the nuts and bolts of how that business pieces how the business pieces are done that just might be a helpful way to get get the needs of the districts and charters matt just something other than just a survey and so are you being an advisory group could be a special ed directors we actually have done that it's a mixed results yeah so if we could do that better i'm i'm definitely open to figuring out how we can do that just a thought thank you i think it's my turn um this is uk i am sort of piggybacking on to what everybody has sort of said today i one thing i want us to be cautious of is that when we are sending out space um we are not wording question away that we get the answers that we want um we are asking questions that maybe really identify where our achilles heel is um so that we can actually address the problems that the agency has as opposed to um just identifying things we already know um i think that would be my my one concern and i'm wondering kind of like what mike said that if we couldn't do a follow-up to the survey and maybe identify some of those issues i i like the idea of our contracted providers our schools that we are providing itinerant services to but i'm wondering if once we identify some of those issues maybe bringing together a group in more like a town hall situation where we have an agenda of things that we would like to sort of flesh out with those groups and and identify target groups based on the different issues that arise from some of those surveys i also um i also think we need to keep the students looped in at some level um whether that is a representative on a student council that's involved in some of these meetings or whether we are surveying students as well again sort of a mixed bag but i do think um hearing some of what their voices have to say um could be instrumental in um some of where we're trying to go with the agency and those were my thoughts yes there are two climate and culture surveys for students and i think we did do the student survey i want to say three years ago when we were trying to get accredited with advanced ad and so i think that we do have to do a student survey every five years but if you're looking for us to do an annual student survey we can definitely take a look at doing that and to provide additional information for us so that we can report that to the board all right uh thank you um mike do you want to go and then and then i'll i'll speak yeah i'll be real quick though um i think the uh obviously customer service and um and community engagement are important facets of of any well-run organization uh i think the second priority though of building capacity with the districts is really quite pertinent and i just thought that the third point under the guiding principles of making decisions based on the best interests of the students to me i think there must be an underlying message there that maybe i'm not understanding because that seems to be such a uh a clear-cut type of principle that would be underlying everything that we do why that would be listed as a guiding principle or or what am i missing in that because i think somehow between the relationship between school district and asdb for that to be included there must be something that maybe is underlying there i don't think you missed anything michael uh i do think that our asdb relationships with the school districts again has been a mixed has been mixed um has have been really good relationships others not as well and for us to really focus on the school districts to develop the best relationships with them to be able to provide the best education and support for the students and so i think it's a very worthwhile priority so we are going to focus on that because every student that we do work with has a school district connected with that student so that relationship is critical for the student success okay so i guess maybe just as a follow-up so there are there's concerns that at times there have been decisions that are not necessarily in the best interest i mean that's that's what i think that's what i was getting at it seems like a an interesting point to present meaning that maybe for whatever reason the relationship between school and asdb the district that that maybe uh there was a uh that relationship was was not as collaborative as it as it should be i suppose for that to be included i just find that to be an instant interesting principle to to talk about the well-being of the student so i might be just thinking out loud here i think the other point here is that in the past with our regional co-ops we did not have consistency and we did not have equity in how we were providing services to our students okay and so we literally had a situation where a student in sierra vista had moved to page arizona and was receiving very different services even though they have the exact same need so i think part of that is a relationship with the school district that we are consistent in how we are providing our support to the students and that we are equitable so the common goal is that we have to provide the best relationship with the school districts okay and that's just a piece for us i think it's a very critical piece okay all right thank you mike did anyone else i'm gonna speak but did anyone else have anything else to say um i think we've all had a churn except for dean yep i'm good this is dean i'm fine okay great um so i think and thanks uh for all the comments uh here you know i think from from my perspective you know i as i as i mentioned earlier in the call i i see a lot of you know actions to take here uh in pillar one and i and i see it in the other uh the other pillars as well um some of the items are things that we you know we already do so we already um you know complete the superintendent evaluation every year uh some of them are things that we have to do by law like uh develop in the 789 evil report we have to send a governor's report to the governor's office every year that's you know just something that we're required to do um you know but the the way that i like to think of this is you know some some measurements of what we think success would look like um and and what do i mean by that if when we looked at the variety of strategic plans uh you know several months ago we drew inspiration from you know that that wide swath of school districts uh and schools both in arizona and outside um and we kind of you know carve together what we've did the work we've accomplished so far from from that uh but the one school that i think does the the the metrics really well and and better than anyone else that at least that we've looked at is the texas school for the blind um and if you if you guys will recall that strategic plan you can go look at the september 24th board meeting and uh their plan is is up there uh in the agenda along with the others and what what they do just perfectly i think is define what these metrics are going to be there's a there's the metric there's a short definition of it there's uh it's the description of its purpose and importance why are we why do we care about this thing uh there's a description of the source and the collection of data how are we collecting this data where is it coming from there's a method of calculation what's our methodology for uh synthesizing this data for for aggregating it for creating this metric and producing it and tracking it over time and then what are the data limitations you know what what what are the limitations on this data this this metric isn't going to tell us everything right we can't use it to infer anything and everything but what's the limitation about this and using that rubric for some of these questions i think would be helpful for us in this pillar and the others because it defines it it kind of defines our success or defines our our path uh in in that type of way without it's agnostic to whether whether we take certain steps or not so we're always going to take the steps that are required by law and we're going to do a lot of the things that we kind of have always done like the superintendent evaluation um and we might take any one of the steps that are on this this pillar one now in some form or another but the question is how do we know if it's working i mean it's if we we do the step i think i don't think that's enough to really say that we're furthering the agency you know forward i think we need more than that i think we need uh a way to measure uh some of these um you know the the progress on the guiding principles um and we need to do it in that way to define what what are we looking at why how we're getting that data how we're calculating it and what's the limitation on that data so as just as an example in the tsb one of the tsb uh metrics is percent of families was agreeing that there was a positive change for the student staff or family as a result of the school consultation so you know there they talk about you know this is the measure the measure addresses the question as to whether the service of the outreach actually make a positive difference um they talk about how they're collecting it with a satisfaction survey on a two-point scale yes or no and then they then they calculate it there's some other survey calculations on percent of families professionals and power professionals rating is very satisfactory above the effectiveness of school consultation workshops there they're collecting a survey of a on a one to five scale and and they're going to have a they want to collect that and then later the board can set a goal i want you know 95 rating us a four or five uh you know if five is the best um but the idea is that we're going to be we're going to be capturing that and tracking that gathering some baseline data in the early part of the plan and then tracking growth in the later part of the plan now how we make if if we were to adopt something like this how we get there is really up to the staff and and the leadership if we if it's a uh you know if we look over to pillar one uh how do we um it's not just do an agency report but if we conduct a satisfaction survey amongst constituents as the board has discussed what are the specific things that we'll be looking for there we might have 10 or 20 questions on this but what are the two or three big ones that we can put together in a metric to say this is what we really want we want overall satisfaction we want to you know for parents we want to make sure they're a few we want a feeling that their kid their child is progressing um and we want to you know later we'll have other metrics under other pillars where we'll we'll actually measure that you know from an educational standpoint but we want to make sure the parents feel that and again as an example uh and the idea is that we're we're taking steps that we decide later but we we're measuring in a way that we can all agree to now and measured that way consistently over you know this this time horizon to see if there if there's progress and again then we can change what we're doing you know we can change those those actions over time if it's not working if we're not making progress or we can keep doing if it is um but the idea is that we're we're measuring the same thing in the same way uh on a regular basis so we can have a i'm not saying that we need to build a dashboard but it's something similar to that the board can see uh on a regular basis uh that we're doing well so that's you know from my perspective i think i think a lot of these need to be kind of phrased in that way and i i want to get the board's opinion on that as to whether or not that's a a better way to rephrase it i do have some comments on these specific items because i think we may be taking these actions anyway i mean again this pillar and a lot of the other pillars have a lot of good ideas in them uh but i want to get the board's input on that if they uh if they think if we adopt that other methodology and approach it a little bit differently if that would be helpful okay uh if uh so that's uh you know in terms of these specifics of this um the if we look at the uh the under priority three and the proposed metrics about the the facebook and and other social media analytics uh you know we we used to have um a public relations officer that wasn't his title i forget his exact title but we used to hear about this you know in every board meeting uh and i know that we still do this as superintendent right but had mentioned we still measure those things but if there's a way that we can kind of go a little bit deeper on that uh i mean there are there are ways to see who's clicking on emails right through constant contact and other providers or similar providers uh there's ways to determine how many impressions that we're getting from all all across social media from i mean it's not just facebook now there's a million other things other ways to engage uh electronically um and that that is how you know primarily these days schools are are communicating with parents and and with students uh that if we can get a better uh i guess more sophisticated uh way to measure how we're doing in uh you know in those areas and how we can do that with analytics would be helpful uh to see how the uh how the agency is engaging with the community do you agree or do you have any any comment on that yes we definitely can do that absolutely we can use facebook analytics and other social media platforms as well um i do know that linda beau she recently stated that you know not anyone's using facebook or the website to look for information so we'll have to look at other types of metrics to look at getting this student engagement with us if you have a more specific metrics for data collection on the quantifiable information i'm happy to do that hand it back to you okay uh great uh yeah no i think i think i do we can talk uh later about that um lynn i see your camera's on i'm not in my head in agreement yes i think we need you know more specifics and really make sure that we are accountable in all areas right be able to measure that um other we have other board input on on rewriting this to really look at um you know specific measures that we have metrics that we can repeat uh you know over and over and over again over time so we're measuring outcomes the same way and consistently um as opposed to you know having the you know this list of items that we either they you know are doing we're gonna continue to do or items that are gonna be new um new initiatives [Music] uh okay um is there any other comment on on pillar one i know that we've all spoken on it is there any other comment for superintendent reichman about about this this is a net i think we're ready to move on to pillar number two okay can we have dr rex present on pillar number two good afternoon i have the pleasure of leading pillar number two outstanding student development and in that category there are three priorities early learning acquisition high academic achievement and social emotional learning what we did was we met with directors principals and members from the odd team to share different samples of what makes a good priority and we developed from that a brainstorming session and we gave a lot of information and i and i know some of it means absolutely nothing to you and that's okay because what this is is a first blush of what is currently happening somewhere in our agency to help create metrics so we can give you information as a board as evidenced by to the best of our ability to let you know how our students are doing so we've had one meeting and we discussed each priority and we went through the principles and we found that we had many resources we have many assessments we use many guides protocols to try to fit in one of the principles i understand this is a lot of information but i want you to know that we wanted to take everything that's already happening and we want to put it into some type of manageable chunk um i think i'll start with a priority and go through it and you can give any feedback nancy's taking notes so i don't need to respond or you know if you want a clarification nancy will take that note but i will start with the first pillar which is the early learning acquisition and within that section there are guiding principles of documented growth of student ensuring continuous improvement and we put what the itinerants are currently doing what the elp is currently doing and the schools kind of took a step back because elp is growing and becoming a birth to five program although preschools are on our campuses it is actually under the elp house so we have the the last guiding principle is resources to parents for priority one and we put in what we are currently doing what we feel is something that we can give you a measurable metric as evidenced by and we look forward to taking these and breaking these down into a manageable chunk to see where we're consistent to see where we're not consistent and to figure out a way to bridge so we can be giving the service in a statewide format that's consistent so if there's any comments for priority one i think nancy's got her pencil ready and we can give some feedback hi there this is shelley you know i think this is one of the most important priorities for our deaf and hard of hearing children absolutely developing language and i think you've already started documenting with the early learning program 0-3 0-5 programs so that's already started correct okay that's great i'm definitely looking forward to those numbers to those metrics later and so that way we can collect all the information the data consistently but thank you where's linda gonna go i don't want to you're letting my turn yeah look at the camera over there hi there yes thank you okay let me think early language acquisition like shelly mentioned is critical for deaf and hard of hearing students and children so for looking at zero to five uh you're right i haven't seen any actual documentation or numbers and so i'm trying to picture my concerns and maybe they might not be concerns pending the the numbers and i i'd like to see what the school districts are providing and how we are measuring the work that they are providing in partnership with us how are we keeping that accountability across the board in terms of providing services when we look at the cooperative model with itinerant teaching how are they documenting student progress and if as soon as the child turns preschool age they go into the kindergarten system at a public school system how are we tracking those students in their language development so in terms of special education that team does each school district provide a consistent tracking system or is there discrepancies depending on the school district it's it's a large worry of mine because we're starting with their itty bitties and we want to catch them as young as possible and as we all know the critical age for learning language that window closes as they get older so who is being held accountable and i'm sure they're putting the finger at us while we're putting the finger at them so i think having an important metric or measurement to start that dialogue as how we can improve documentation and tracking and making it a team effort and if they're needing support they can reach out just as much as we can reach out to them so i think if we look at the needs of deaf and hard of hearing students in a mainstream setting versus the students on a campus versus early learning program that's it's a large concern of mine and just putting that out there thank you okay i have a couple questions one's just looking at this that we have you talk about the metrics tab and early acquisition tab i have no clue what's in those tabs how can we access that information one i will get those tabs if they were not included i will make sure that you have access to the tabs to see what is currently happening yeah it just says see this tab see that cabin okay we don't know what that is um okay and i know we agreed on these priorities but just a comment that maybe shelley made um that this priority is early language acquisition we have high academic achievement and social and emotional learning what about our blind and visually impaired kids um what would that's not my bag but we have plenty of people here who who are experts and are way more familiar with those early learning skills that that are blind and visually impaired kids need and that that will fit in there i believe um [Music] i'm sorry you don't have those tabs [Music] but um for example in birth to three working with azip the teachers of the dhh and bvr work alongside service coordinators throughout the process so we do have ways of documenting we currently are documenting kendra has that documentation sorry my dogs are barking we are already collecting that data so that will be a good metric and be able to give you as evidenced by this was a brainstorming session we yeah we were given principles hey figure it out so we have some very very tight stuff and then we have some very loose stuff is what i'm saying and and i'm just wondering if and david you can help me with this or mike gordon or somebody um the priority when it's early language acquisition it does sound very dhh um is there any way we can can expand that to make sure that we're covering our our vi blind deafblind kids i i just think we need to be all-encompassing i know we often focus on on the dhh but i i don't know maybe it's no big deal but um it was just sure something i was thinking yeah there are certainly different goals you know lynn in terms of you know blind vision paired uh children in the in the zero three program uh you know a lot of it is you know tactile based and getting used to different tactical fields and um you know depending if they have a degree of vision or not or what their vision is uh maneuvering in high contrast environments or we're seeing high contrast shapes and things like that those are all uh things that work with the infants among among others so i'd expect to see that uh or something similar to that uh as well but other uh other other questions for for dr rex i'm going to pop on over to the next one which is high academic achievement and when i came on to the staff in 2016 we began that school improvement process which had just begun and being able to be in the school improvement process and being able to have those grants really gave us the opportunity to learn that schools should have a tracking system of interim and ultimate outcomes related to high academic achievement as well as social and emotional learning so when the board gave us these priorities two and three this was we're we are really in a good path there i feel very comfortable i feel pretty confident that that priority to high academic achievement working on closing educational achievement gaps is a focus uh i think you're still on on mute dr x i'm so sorry it was so good i apologize i my dogs keep barking and i feel like they they heard mike manley's dog and they they want to play with his dog or something so i keep giving him the hairy eyeball to stop priority two high academic achievement this is something that when i came to asdb we got we got the opportunity through the school improvement grants through focusing our two brick and mortar schools but also the co-ops and the early learning program we really learned a lot through those grants on how to track interim progress and and shoot for ultimate outcomes and have very specific and strategic priorities i feel we're in a good place as we start down this path we are focusing on high academic achievement as well as the social emotional learning piece we have three guiding principles of closing the educational achievement gap rigorous instruction as well as ensuring continuous improvement our schools have definitely years of data map data galileo testing we have information that we are not only gathering the data we are taking the time to disseminate it and help infuse research-based best practices to grow and our teachers are growing as well as our students are growing so our school metrics we have quite a few things um we don't we won't have the azmerit anymore but we have a lot of metrics that i hope that we have included that will help be as evidenced by to share with the board for this category and this priority uh are there any questions for dr x of this this part of the pillar dr rex this is mike family hi just a quick guide to a quick question invention uh formative assessments are we currently doing common formative assessments across grade levels is that something we can tap we do did you say ecap oh that we can tap into are they common formative assessments across our gallery tuna yeah okay yes our map testing our galileo is in at asdb tucson we do we have our bcg which is our bilingual um we do we and and we're growing and we're developing more but yes we have we have progress updates i think we're in a better spot now than we were two three years ago um we we are starting to have our school level smart goals and our teacher goals aligning to those kind of goals for it's all kind of coming together as as we're in year four i guess is what i'm trying to say i'm sorry maybe my question was poorly asked are the third graders in tucson taking the same common formative as they are in phoenix yes they are similar they are the same their thing sorry [Music] shelly here question again um remind me early learning program is birth to five yes recently became birth to five yes okay okay um so it says this report allows us to document any concerns from parents school districts charters or staff so my question is would they the staff who are working with within that age group birth to five um in observing their behaviors can documents i mean not really report from them because they're too young but based on observations they can see struggles in behavior how can they document that information report it they have um they have various ways of of doing that they have observations they they they document behaviors they have a plan that i can i'll write that down to get some more clarification for you and uh are you talking preschool predominantly are you talking okay preschool well um really preschool and birth to three or birth to five okay any in that group they do that through that gold testing um if you look at the metrics they have a testing called gold gold and that's teaching strategies gold and it's it's required by the state of arizona for all preschoolers and we we also participate in gold okay so i'm curious to know what the metrics looks like you know what does that assessment look like is that information you can bring to us next time or i can have kendra share um a piece of that it basically documents um a child's progress across a quite a few edu educational developmental domains so they have set domains and then they they do the assessment and plug that information in i can get you more information on gold though i'll have kendra put it in her report sure great thank you appreciate that dr x lynn sorry this is priority two correct yes okay just a question i'm looking at this and i see high academic achievement we have our itinerary regions metrics our elp metrics where are our schools on the second page the school metrics oh that on the bottom that little bit yeah that's the specific things that they use to measure thank you i didn't see it in the column so did i mention this was a rough draft and we did a big session and we were getting a lot of information [Applause] like i said asdb we collect a lot of data hi dr x um i think from you know further to my my comments on pillar one uh you know if we could kind of rephrase this as you're you know going through this to the next draft to have the you know describe the specific metric that you're proposing you know why it's important how we're calculating it uh how we're collecting it how we're calculating it and and what the limitation of that is i think that would be really helpful so if you you know we talk about these um again the assessments that uh that mike manley just mentioned um if we can talk about what the uh you know with more precision how we're collecting that where we're collecting that from and and how we're calculating that i think that would be helpful and again if you look at that tsp document you can see their outcome measures and they have you know again they have really good outcome measures i think um you know they're they're looking at measuring and an assessment uh for every item in the core and expanded core curriculum uh for blind and visually impaired students and what they're doing there is saying that there's going to be a you know they want a percentage of students achieving a score to 2.0 or higher uh on that particular assessment and then they describe how they're how they're achieving it same they do something similar you know several of them as you can see but it's if we can do it in that type of format i think that'll be helpful because then we'll be you know we'll be measuring that metric the same way every time and how we improve that is again up to up to up the staff of the agency that's what we'll adjust over time but we want to make sure that we're we're capturing with with some precision what we're collecting okay sounds good and go ahead i'm sorry i was just ready to jump into the third one that sounds that gives a lot of guidance to be honest with you when we first sat down we had so much we had to start teasing through what can we give you as evidenced by that will give you what you need to know that students are growing and learning and that's kind of where we started yeah i know that's that's certainly a good good starting place but that i think that way of looking at it um is going to be helpful as we you know as we as we move through the plan over the years uh and the other thing is again it was a comment from the first pillar is anything that we do that we have to do anyway by either law or that we were doing uh you know by custom that we're not going to change uh we probably want to leave leave from that so i think on one of one of these there's a review of ifsps and doing some audits in the early learning program which you know we we kind of do anyway right i mean we always have to be sure that we're in compliance with the ifsp we're always auditing to make sure that we're we're delivering the services that we're obligated to deliver so from that i don't necessarily think that's a helpful metric um other than whether or not we complied with it or not i mean we have i mean we do have to keep track of that for for compliance purposes um but for growth purposes and enhancing the the efficacy of the agency um i i just you know we should we should be doing that already i guess right and we might and we might find as we start going through this that the way we're collecting the data or the system we're using we're going to have to really look at do a deep dive into that too so it's a this has been a good process that's for sure my final priority is social and emotional learning and it has the guiding principles of online resources for stakeholders um developing proficiency and expanded common core and developing critical and creative thinking skills and that is an area that we are just starting to evolve into it's me again i got my sticker i'm finding the school metrics being really thin what are we doing for the social emotional learning um in the schools uh they they need it it's it's critical um but there's not a lot on here and and there's nothing on the bottom i looked through our um through our process we did start the you're mute again kristen kristen sorry about that we have love and logic as well as the leader in me we have that type of data that we can share which was started as part of the school improvement process but then we've also started to work on that mindfulness because we're living in a very strange time and working on that and making sure that we have the counseling support and that type of interaction we can probably keep data uh visits but not go too deep but that way you can know that students are receiving certain things and certain components to support their social and emotional well-being we definitely have that kind of information we can add and i think that completes our section we have some pretty good ideas on for next steps i i see some good note taking and i appreciate the feedback and we will look into that format that you had suggested president nigro and we'll keep meeting and pulling together information thank you all right uh thank you dr rex um all right so for pillar three the effective resource map i believe that's ms cooper that's i'm sorry that's four uh three uh this was uh miss piant miss anita pyatt yes yes okay um if you can give us a few minutes uh to introduce your your plan sure good afternoon everybody today i'm going to present on the pillar 3 which is superb organizational culture which each have three priorities in looking over the priorities that we had you'll see that as board president nigro pointed out and superintendent reichman there may there is not quantitative metrics right now um we will have some once we've developed and implemented the systems to capture information and so we were looking at this from a standpoint of creating a foundation or a starting point um as some systems may not be in place in order to capture it the data that you know we want to capture will be used to figure out what it is that's working what needs improvement what changes in the programs can be made to achieve the improved rating or a ranking based on the previous data sets and so i will briefly um describe each priority and give you time to provide feedback priority one which was advance a climate of continuous improvement and those guiding principles included the ongoing of professional development using that data to make decision to make driven decision making in that in that process continuously improving our job performance and so in looking at that we're proposing that we have to create a system to capture the professional development for all staff members is it effective are are we ensuring that we are evaluating that particular development or professional development activity by a survey and what is the outcome what is the cost and the implementation we also wanted to um capture how we are promoting continuous improvement our staff be having the opportunities uh to improve and to attend professional development um and make decisions and suggestions for improvement as we as we go through those we also want to develop a system to collect performance evaluations for staff members and analyze that data currently right now we do are collecting it but we aren't collecting the analytics inside the performance evaluation system so i will open it up to any questions or feedback regarding priority one hi shelly here sorry i'm looking through your priorities i'm not sure if we're going to cover all of them but my question is if this would be covered but staff do do they have required professional developments for those staff who are newly onboarded or as far as continued development do they have those requirements and or is it really just up to them as far as personal or professional development goes most of our staff members are required to have some type of certification for our professional staff members and so their certifications require them to have an annual professional development hour um log that they keep in order to re issue their certification for our staff members that um may not be required to have certification for their positions they would not have a requirement a professional development hours to complete okay i think that's interesting so for those who are not in a certification requirement position they don't have ongoing professional development such as providing good customer services or you know just really engaging more in professional work so that's that's interesting my second oh no i think that's all for now i'm gonna let lynn answer ask her question okay thank you thank you shelly um yes we as teachers have to have our hours to keep our certification but i don't know if this is specifically what shelly was talking about but do we as an agency provide specific development um professional development when i came to glendale union i had been teaching for close to 150 years not quite and i had to go through a two-week program in the summer i had to meet with mentors once a month the second year it was like a five-day boot camp and then the third year for three years we did this um just for support for those they are very kind to me and let me do my own thing but um just for support for some of those new teachers because i know how tough it is when you come in and you go okay here's your classroom go for it um to make sure that that they have that that support that they need specifically and on a scheduled basis so that we make sure that they're supported and and allowed to be successful and and providing i know when when they were going through um the uh school improvement plan there was a lot there seemed to be a lot more professional development because it was required and if we could keep that up i know as a teacher myself it's so important just to keep me up on what's going on not only in the deaf ed world but also in the general ed world so that we can keep our the focus on oh this is what kids are doing not only in our our deaf brick and mortar school but what what the gen ed kids are doing so we can get our kids to be performing with them which they are so capable of doing we do have a mentor protege program for our new teachers and so there are activities that they do or they meet with their mentor and so that data there are activities they are required to complete for the new teachers that are onboarded and so we can collect that data and look at it and see what it tells us um but i agree continuing that development in the uh for new things that are happening in deaf ed or blind education as well as the general education populations this is 2k um [Music] i i'm gonna sort of piggyback onto where shelly was going um i i also think we need to value continuing education across the board not just for teachers not only from a professional standpoint but also from a succession planning standpoint i really think that you know if we're identifying aids in the classroom that we see have a skill set we should be working with them as the agency encouraging them to continue with their professional education and and maybe become a teacher um i i also think that should go across the board for every department whether we are talking about front office staff or or transportation staff i know that from a state agency standpoint one of the expectations is we have 32 hours of continuing education and it can be anything that interests us that relates to our job so for example i could take a linkedin learning class on how to more effectively use excel spreadsheets um but that's something that i would utilize in my my day-to-day work environment and so it would be approved as continuing ed and part of those 32 hours of ongoing professional development it is something that would have to be approved by my my upline manager that they would say yes this is related to their job so therefore these would count but that's part of my evaluation every year and i think you know as an education agency we need to value education and we need to encourage all of our staff to continue at some level i appreciate that feedback thank you thank you that's exactly what i was trying to say you said it best uh soon ahead dean hey just real quick this is dean i was going to totally echo what was just said by the last two board members i think it exactly said right just want to add one more person to the list that says that that's very important and i see the dynamic of it so thank you thank you this is mike family first of all dean i i noticed some ink there that i haven't seen in previous board meetings so thank you for sharing that that was that was great um having been a uh when i started teaching in glendale i only had been teaching for like 25 years when i started but that's a joke too but um and since the certification has has they've expanded it to 12 years and used to be 180 hours every four years and it was really important to be on top of that pd but i know in some districts they would track track the full scope like we had suggested having that system ready and while certification is important there's such a gap now between when you get certified when you have to recertify that having some sort of continuity between pd is point is 12 years is ridiculous when you can't have a theme um but have we thought of like theming it out by content or but the tracking part is super important and then i saw the part of that was effectiveness that's the long term is that like to prevent drive by pd that are pointless and have like a themed yes but okay that was just really really my question that tracking part can be very helpful um particularly when folks do reach that certification threshold and then otp speech o m are itinerant related service folks i'm assuming they're they're going to be tracked differently and their certifications are usually national otpt and that's a whole different kind of focus but keeping them in the academic pieces when there's the theme to track as well i'm just thinking downstream on how that that could be tracked for the the itinerants are usually more complicated than teachers but it sounds like it's by that smile i can tell we have a we have a plan thank you have we thought about focusing on a like a uh one year multiple year theme for content have have we got to that point probably not yet where we're looking at we haven't gotten to that point but i do appreciate the feedback of the theming component because i think that would be beneficial across it yeah all of it thank you thank you hi there it's linda so i'm not an educator so my question comes from a different field including the school districts that do provide the services for deaf and hard of hearing students how are they tracking their certifications and their continuing education sorry i had to adjust my lighting okay the ring lights help so if let's say supposedly if we're we're talking about a outside school district and we have a deaf or hard of hearing individual in their classroom play with me here let me think it there hold on let me try to figure out as a teacher and i'm in the general ed classroom and i have a teacher of the deaf working with my student where's the connecting piece there so if how is that general ed teacher learning about deaf education and who's monitoring that and are they qualified to make decisions or recommendations for students in their classroom that are deaf or hard of hearing i think that's a challenge for general ed teachers that have students with disabilities we for example for the deaf and hard of hearing population they use interpreters so when a child is learning through an interpreter it's different so it's yeah is there anything that we can use to measure what school districts and general ed teachers are using is there anything out there for them to learn about the deaf and hard of hearing population i'm curious to know i think we could collect from the itinerant world what it is that we're providing to the general ed population um because those uh teachers that are in deaf ed as well as the blind education they are they are supporting those general education teachers with things and so um that would be something that we should capture because we don't i don't believe that we have that capture that i'm aware of and i think that's necessary absolutely i would like to know that i think it's time now to to it's an urgent need it i feel it's very urgent that really we can't be putting off any longer just my thoughts thank you i'm not gonna say anything um that's what itinerant teachers do and hopefully you know there's a way to track it i i know i do that i have information that's the connection you make with those teachers i teach the teachers more than i teach the student at times so um and i think that's something that we could share at some point how those services are delivered and that's all i'm gonna thank you then this is shelley and to piggyback with linda i know we don't have much control with outside school districts and what they're teaching can itinerant teachers obviously they are sharing resources and materials and information and it's based off of if they take it or not right the school districts have that choice i'm wondering if there's some way that we can offer some sort of external education as an agency for those that are interested that have deaf or hard of hearing students in their classrooms to participate in this professional development and we can collaborate together in some manner just a thought that's a good idea thank you thank you and i really sorry i didn't mean to jump in that that would also building capacity in districts and charters if that's also our goal that's that's the biggest way that's a great great suggestion because that would build capacity and and um it is a mixed bag about if a gender teacher you know it often it falls on that sped teachers case manager and the gen ed teacher to get that information but if we could be a thought leader in that area that would be a big help okay thank you i think those are all great comments um and you know i think the the only thing i would say is again similar to what i said about the others is you know if we can kind of rephrase it and take that other approach to how we're describing it um i think that would be beneficial and then to make it more consistent that we can do at the end to make all of these kind of consistent in one uh in one document the other note is you know we might want to see how which of the staff are you know maybe leading uh workshops for other teachers um or speaking at uh you know various events from here either here or in other states you know now that many things are being done virtually so that might be helpful as well but i think we're ready to go to priority too okay thank you okay so for pillar two is the model servitude leadership and the guiding principles are promoting leadership and staff and students that development as well as demonstrating high expectations for all and supporting our staff by removing obstacles and the proposed metrics are implementing and developing emerging leaders an emerging leaders program for staff and students um you heard dr rex talked earlier about the leader in me and those types of things that have have started because of the school improvement we want to also communicate more to our staff and to the community about the achievements that connect to our strategic plan and demonstrate those high expectations through some media platforms and we want to ensure that we're developing a system for our staff and for students to submit concerns so that they can communicate obstacles that need to be addressed and that could begin with the immediate supervisor and kind of have a hierarchy for addressing problems we do have you know the policies in place which is formal and so we think that would be a good thing to help staff and students to to model what that should look like i'll now open it up to any questions or feedback you have this is shelley again um can you tell me what that leadership program looks like can you kind of give us a better picture of that sure so the organizational development division which is our professional development team we discussed that you know kind of like with the succession planning we don't really have a formal program in place for staff to participate in development that would have helped someone develop as a leader and leadership isn't always just a title it's also within everybody in an organization and so we want to open up that opportunity for everyone to have that opportunity to develop as a leader and so we want to create a program that we can have each year for staff to participate in that now there's a lot of um details that are going to go into that which we haven't got to yet but that is the the ideal or the premise okay i can kind of get the idea sorry this is shelley speaking um another thing uh number three with the proposed measure metric number three communication obstacles that need to be addressed i was thinking similar you do you have student council or a junior nad junior national association of the deaf committee i mean you you already have that established right you have that at phoenix day school yes oh they don't have those programs throughout the cooperatives or in tucson i don't know how you would do that in the cooperatives but not in tucson not my understanding from talking to principal creasy it's the leader in me program that they do which is the um seven habits of highly effective people that they have oh okay but it's interesting i'll wait to hear more later as we come up with ideas but thank you david i'm asking for the floor yeah you can just go ahead okay um being open hi annette um these are this is a uh this is a good priority uh particularly i mean if we're kind of dealing i'm assuming we are dealing with kind of draft formats here right and that's what david keeps reiterating at the end and i mean if you can this is an interesting servitude leadership uh title because that obviously presents a pretty broad and important field uh in the in human service which is what we're really doing besides just education um as an hr uh director executive director i think it's very important that you're able to have uh well-vetted trainers who can actually present this type of material within a framework of service and servitude and and the importance of that uh i think is particularly pertinent in a place like asdb where there's has been this reoccurring theme over the years of retribution and that there's going to be some type of of uh of uh reaction from administration towards people that will come forward with their with their uh with their their issues i want to say obstacles uh so having the third key point there and an opportunity to to uh address those things systemically although there might need to be a uh a buffer in there because if there's still a culture of a feeling that people will be persecuted for their uh for coming forward for you know not even not we're not on whistleblowing we're talking just folks that come forward with with very very sincere issues but which i don't necessarily feel as is accurate from what i've just noticed over the time uh the last five years but nonetheless that's that's not my place um but i think as a rough draft and this isn't necessarily rough but as a draft i think these are good points to uh to really build upon for um not just leadership in in that people are taking um you know uh in services that talks about you too can be a leader but really building upon it because there's a lot of great great modules out there that talk about leadership and the importance of it and uh it's a it's an emerging field uh even still and uh and and pretty profound at times so with the proper training and trainers i think this is something that the agency would benefit greatly as as it's developed and i'd be really interested to see how this is fleshed out thank you thank you for your feedback uh are there are there any other board members that would like to speak on this point and and again feel free to jump in i i uh you know just uh as soon as one board member's finished you can turn on your camera and and go ahead i'm trying to you know just stay out of the way of uh of any conversations that happen to develop um but it doesn't seem there any other comments or priority to um can we go to priority three now yes all right great okay so for priority three it's diversity and staff serving our students the guiding principles are recruiting qualified staff that are representative of our student population demonstrating critical and creative problem solving involving and empowering others and so those proposed metrics how what better way than to start conversations or presentations with our own students about being teachers or professionals at asdb uh that could include job shadowing documenting those efforts that we've done in the successes for those staff members or i'm sorry for those students that do become staff members at asdb we do have current staff members that are products of asdb schools and so we would like to start that process we also want to develop and implement a problem-solving process for staff and students and provide the appropriate ongoing training of that solution based process problem solving again we have formal policies that can help with that but it may help staff members and students go through a process and how to bring that problem to the surface and how and work with people to solve that concern or issue and then last we want to identify and develop a process for involving and empowering others um and document the progress of what that program looks like for develop for involving and empowering others um and that could be through the programs of um as we talked about before the problem solving as well as the um communicating obstacles i'm open to any questions or feedback regarding uh number three hi this is shelly i i always get started huh all right my first question okay so it says problem solving so are you referring to the problem being not having a diversified enough staff is that what you're referring to no problem solving in the turn in the in the scheme of staff members or students having a problem and what steps or processes in order to solve it can you give an example an example would be maybe a staff member is having some issues of working with a supervisor and so there are things that human resources the ombudsperson the policies can advise and guide for that staff member to do but sometimes the problem solving may be bigger than that maybe it's um the supervisor needs training in a policy or um the staff members expectations are are great and maybe that supervisor you know can't meet those expectations and no supervisor can meet those expectations because they're so high and so it's really about problem solving those issues um and and relating to those roles um i don't know what that looks like yet i know in other organizations they have developed that and so that gives um staff and students a framework to say oh i have this issue or i have this concern how can i if i go through these steps this should help to get to resolution okay just one of the biggest concerns with staff is they may not feel safe enough to be able to express their frustrations or their concerns so first we need to develop a safe space and how how you do that or what that looks like i'm not sure i'll and with that i'll turn it over just okay okay thank you for the feedback anita i'm gonna sort of piggyback on that because i think part of this um is not just programmatic i think part of this needs to be making sure that we have developed a culture of diversity inclusion and that we are making every effort to continue to develop that culture um i know there this is sort of a double-edged edge sword in some ways because even in our recruitment process and things like that we should be looking to um expand what the face of asdb looks like you know we should um there should be representation of each student background that we you know that we are serving um so students have someone on campus they can identify with um and i know that that's difficult and we don't have a lot of control over that because we don't know who's graduating from you know teacher training programs and such but i think that part of that culture of inclusion and diversity is making sure we're looking at all of those things that we are doing to recruit staff to make sure that we are um reaching out to programs that maybe have a an underserved population and things like that so that we are recruiting from those schools as well i i'm even thinking of you know here in the state um we have a very large indigenous population and yet we don't really have a lot of indigenous teachers and so how are we you know how can we maybe expand that and encourage students that are from indigenous tribes to pursue deaf education or blind education and whether that's one of our students or alumni or whether we're reaching out and partnering with some of those feeder schools i don't know i just my thought okay thank you i think michael gordon was next and then linda um thank you linda um i think the more blind people you can hire the better simple as that and recruitment can be through uh through the advocacy organizations blind schools uh the commissions throughout the states i don't know if there are any blind people in positions of leadership or supervision or or how many are blind people are hired right now or working for asdb but the opportunity for blind students to have blind teachers and role models and to recognize their success and particularly in the field of blindness when there are such low expectations for people to be successful the the more people you can hire you hire in being asdb or any group that works with disabled and uh in this case uh blind students the better can't encourage that enough how important that is and i don't know if that has really been a priority or if it's just something that is timely now so i appreciate the feedback you're welcome hi again this is linda okay adjusting the camera oh well so the sun sets you know my face looks different apparently so as far as diversity in an inclusive culture i mean this is incredibly critical at this point and we have to look at ourselves even what is the makeup of our board white male privileged you know where where are the people with disabilities where is the individual that is blind what is reflective of the population that we're directing so i start with us i think also for professional development if we bring in someone who is an expert in indigenous studies or in the just indigenous cultures we can start there professional development needs to be varied so having workshops and different trainings on specific populations is important looking at this month for example black history month there's so much information out there on the interweb so there's opportunities for growth if we hire the right person if we recruit the right people and put them in the positions of leadership and power and decision making so there's room for us to learn and i think that's something that we definitely start have to start putting more work into how to diversify our teachers our staff and what does our recruitment process look like and how are we pulling them into the the developmental disability programs or you know blind schools for the blind schools for the deaf and the deaf-blind community the low incidence disability communities and i i can only imagine the staff that work with them work incredibly hard and are they recognized i mean i've seen him for myself and i think we need more people that are qualified to teach and not just given uh remedial work so it we definitely need a hand holding step we need a an opportunity for deafblind community members to come together and it's out there i see it on facebook and is it here is it here in arizona and how do we recruit someone via their interest and i think we have to definitely step outside of arizona sometimes yeah so luckily we do have the instagram and the facebook out there to start looking up to see what is the trend now that's my two cents thank you linda i do want to add some information for the board in the fall we actually implemented or set up a diversity and inclusion committee there are 12 professional staff that are included in this committee from diverse backgrounds from across the agency at the more brick and mortar schools and throughout the cooperatives and they have been in current dialogue on how to create a more welcoming culture a more welcoming inclusive environment and culture for all of us and for all of our staff and our students so the conversations are happening they've actually taken some training themselves already and i would watch the training personally and this was on cultural humility where they talk about specifically the native american population and most often we think cultural competence but we do not have cultural humility and we're not willing to learn another culture so this they just recently published their first newsletter for the entire agency on the topic of cultural humility and again we are starting our question now is how are we measuring the inclusive culture i've heard a few a few of ideas here and i do agree with everyone that it is important it's a priority for us and we do need to start looking at diversifying and include being inclusivity so going back to you thank you thank you superintendent reichman hi shelly shall we here again diversity not only encompasses race but we're talking about deaf culture deafblind culture blind culture the entire gamut that's included so i think that's another piece that we have to really focus on as well yes and sometimes well i know in the in the past i'm not sure about now but there have been several deaf staff that may have felt intimidated or unsafe because they were in a very hearing centric environment feeling unsupported and so i'm not sure how that's addressed is there an advocate is there how do we look at diversity yeah those are my thoughts thank you and this is annette that's a good question i'm not sure how to address that all i can say is that at the first meeting of the diversity and inclusion committee most of them were deaf we did not have anyone that was blind we did have a few hearing individuals a few white caucasian people but it was a quite very group and we all it's led by a black man his harold campbell who is a math teacher on the tucson campus and it was interesting to see the dialogue and how they talked about feeling the oppression by others or intimidation by others and they were not even comfortable with me the superintendent being there and so after the second meeting i decided to excuse myself from the subsequent meetings and had them figure out how they would like to work together as a committee and to develop goals and that i would provide support in resources moving forward and they really are doing that they've been receiving training they've just published their first newsletter so they are becoming more active more assertive already and we're talking about four or five months and so that process of the collective group supporting each other i believe is the approach and they've been talking about issues of intimidation by other people and i'm not sure if this is just from my perspective mrs shelley thank you annette for sharing that and i think this brings up a point of concern with not being comfortable with even the superintendent being there we want everyone to feel comfortable with anyone participating in a meeting open dialogue it's interesting i think there's some things that need to be changed and this is linda shelley you make a good point and i think that to feel comfortable in certain spaces and to have them be allowed to have their own space to be able to talk about things that are happening in the workplace so that when they become comfortable to address it or have you involved makes sense i know as a deaf individual if i have a hearing person come into my space that i'm trying to create based off of my experiences of intimidation and oppression and marginalization i we need certain spaces within our work environment to be able to work through and process certain situations and how to deal with the administration and through a collective group and so it makes sense to have affinity groups throughout the campuses or throughout the agency so i'm hoping that's something that maybe we would look into for the near future to to be able to provide safe spaces for individuals thank you for your feedback linda and i think that ends that conversation with the diversity and inclusion committee any more comments or questions for anita if there if there are none um i think we have gone uh over two hours so i'd like to give the interpreters a break so if we can do 10 minutes and then we can reconvene to talk about pillar four so it's 6 13 now we'll go to 6 23 and we'll go in a short break thank you i think it's a 6 24 now if we can come back thank you um hope to hope that we have everyone back after that break and now we're going to be going to pillar four uh miss cooper okay good evening everyone last but not least i am responsible for leading pillar for effective resource management this pillar is unique in that it covers and supports all of the key areas for the implementation of our agency strategic plan to be successful where we would align resources to address student needs and support all staff and the board in implementing all of the various priorities that we've already discussed today an effective strategy plan though cannot succeed without effectively managing the resources a lot of times we tend to just focus on the money or the financial resource resources of a strategic plan however we also need to ensure that our resource capacity also addresses the people time and other key resources and that each of these are distributed and utilized equitably so the needs of all are adequately and effectively addressed and so that our resources are managed to support our students and our educational programs we'll need to continue examining the allocation and use of our resources to ensure the sustainability increase student learning organizational effectiveness as well as appropriating levels of funding the development of the strategies or actions for effective resource management is a collaborative effort with the executive director of human resources anita payette the director of operations albert duff the ex executive director of information technology paul creasy and myself the executive director of business services for most of these the team has already started addressing some of the guiding principles and will be evidenced by either an improvement to a current process being worked on through various plans and reports and or detailed data analysis similar to the other three pillars the team will need to revisit more defined data metrics and identify any limitations so i won't go through each bullet individually for the priorities but i will try to summarize and if there are any specific comments or questions that you may have i'll do my best with answering them tonight however i may need to go back to the individual department director to get more details for you the first priority being optimized human resources addresses the people and the time the guiding principles were identified as focusing on efficiency lean management and equity attracting and retaining quality personnel and determining a balance of personnel and operational needs our human resources department will implement the proposed data metrics as evidenced by current improvement processes that have already began such as standardizing the work calendars for our 10-month members agency-wide where the hours per week days per year and annual hours are based on operational need and are consistent across the various programs organizational changes across the agency have and continue to occur where we want to make sure that our staffing is aligned with the work our contracted consulting firm lacroix milligan and associates has and is doing with their demographic and student enrollment analysis as well as the related services staff workforce study human resources has also began working on a plan to ensure we attract and retain quality personnel by looking at the flexibility and compensation to compete with the local schools and entities that recruit from the same labor market and has also been looking at maximizing the human resources systems that support and integrate both of our hr and payroll operations are there any questions or comments specific to this priority oh shelley here [Music] so key term being attract and retain yes i'm trying to recall um previously if we did a comparison to other schools to inquire as far as salary comparisons are we equitable to what teachers are receiving in local school districts i believe we have um i'm not necessarily sure if it was specific to the teachers but i know agency wide hr has been trying to look at when they're doing their labor workforce analysis during their compensation studies that they are looking at the local schools and other similar agencies to determine what the compensation should be okay also and not only local are we comparing other states schools for the deaf and schools for the blind because our teachers and staff are specialists so in other states are they paying more um do they ha are they looking at the cost of living and comparing with other states who have a lower or higher cost of living i think that's something else we need to keep in mind as well we it's very important to attract them in that sense and also re retain them and this question kind of relates to pillar three diversity creating that inclusive environment that place where people just really want to stay uh that morale that sense of morale so i'm just throwing that out there but thank you shayna thank you i will be sure to discuss that with our human resources department but i believe that they are also looking at other states and other similar schools to the agency this is in that yes we do any other questions regarding this first priority uh if there are none others i guess um you know i have my same comments i've said earlier today in terms of uh you know taking a look at the you know those kind of model metrics and looking through the idea of how we're how we're creating them what we're thinking about um how we're thinking about defining them the source of that data the methodology for compilation and then what the limitations of that might be in terms of the and again i think for you know for your area it might be i don't want to say the easiest part but it's it's the the part that that makes more sense to look at numbers because we're always looking at numbers on the financial report so we're always looking at your kind of dashboards but uh the idea that we're you know that we're looking at what we're spending on our uh you know on our on our staff and on our staff development if we can have units of measure that you can derive that we can look at at a regular basis i mean right now in our financial reports you know we have the total expenditures and that's helpful from a general organizational standpoint we need that um but if we look at uh maybe some metrics that are more more meaningful to us uh that would be uh you know that will be helpful as as well so uh you know again the not just the number of full-time ftes but uh how how that money is spent and and where it's spent on on the particular job classification uh would be helpful uh you know for us to see where we uh you know where are we expending our our our labor costs you know where is that going um you know there's another and i this probably goes along with priority too but i've seen metrics like uh average cost of a program you know per student per day you know for school day or cost of residential program per student per night um those those types of metrics that i mean almost it almost sounds like the the you know the money ball in baseball the the next generation um you know metrics but that that's what i'm really and i suppose it's a big ass to ask for you to make but it's a that's what we're really looking for because if we have so if excuse me we have something like uh you know the average um you know cost for a program per student per day uh we're able to monitor i don't know that we have any excuse me preconceived notion of what that should be right now but if we if we if we create that we synthesize it and we were monitored over time you know we could see if it goes up or down and if it goes up by a lot we have to maybe we have to ask questions about why if it goes down um you know by a lot we have to probably ask why as well uh but that's you know that's kind of what i'm looking for anyways is how can we make these measures that aren't you know that are kind of beyond uh what we have in our current reports but that you we can synthesize it in a way that gives us a metric that helps us understand uh how our resources and in this case it's human resources how the how the labor and the time is being spent i appreciate that feedback and most if not some of that has been provided in our finance committee meetings where i do go through by by program area looking at payroll as well as looking at the different departments there i have also shared in some of those meetings as well cost per day per student by area the different funding sources so i think what would be ideal too is to share more of that um i do appreciate the feedback in terms of the full board reports but also through the work study sessions that we've talked about doing you'll be able to see more of that at that level as well um it's unfortunate that not many people sit in on the finance committee meetings but that's where we do go into detail a little bit more um with those reports so yes i do have that yeah it's it's not that you don't do it already i mean i i i know that it's the the question is when we move it on to the strategic plan that means that that we're looking at it every you know it's part of our monitoring of our of the whole agency um so it's something that we're going to be looking at regularly so it's it's not again not that you don't already do it or we don't already have that information but we're creating a metric that we can all agree as a board that we're going to be monitoring uh every you know periodically probably every meeting in in in this case uh maybe not for every other metric but it's going to be important to us and we're going to make you know broader decisions based on you know based on that information so because right now there's a lot of those reports there's a lot in the finance the report that goes to the board um and the idea is not you know they're typically you know 12 pages or so um and again we still need to see all that we still still want to see it but how are we tracking the the strategic growth it's it's not it's not every metric on there has to be there it's it's what we're saying is going to be now is important that we need to focus on uh so it's it's that select group of them that we're gonna you know measure uh you know measure um measure growth oh yes i i definitely agree and we can begin to to look at that and make the modifications as necessary i definitely agree okay thank you okay so for the second and third priorities aligning human and capital resources and technology improvements and integration those two areas address the allocation of our physical and technological resources the second priority align human and capital resources proposed data metrics will be implemented by our operations department and the guiding principles consist of ensuring wise stewardship of the facilities encouraging effective facility use and management and promoting long-range planning the metrics include addressing the capital improvement and maintenance needs of our facilities developing a master facility plan and continuing the evaluation of our fleet management in partnership with adot the proposed data metrics for our physical and capital resources will be monitored by the department and will be evidenced by the space utilization study and through the development of a master facility plan which we're hoping both can be completed within the next one to two years as you all are also aware last year we entered into an agreement with adot to help our management of the agency fleet and as part of that agreement and with continued efforts we're looking to want to right-size the fleet based on data from the gps systems that have been installed and we want to continue to evaluate the improvement processes that have began with evaluating routes for labor and equipment allocation as well as the recruitment and training of our transportation staff any specific questions or comments on this second pillar or second priority um i guess the only comments i had that you know in terms of the master facility plan and the space utilization study you know these are all things that we we really need uh you know and i know we've been talking about doing them for a while um you know but in terms of how we how how do we judge where we are again not that not to repeat myself but um if we can figure out a way to describe how we're utilizing space now and how we want to utilize space i think that'll be helpful to see if our efforts in using space more efficiently and and and is gonna is gonna be productive so um i don't know if that's i mean not not every square foot is used for student instruction but um if we have uh you know a square footage to uh either an employee or two or two students that we're using for instruction or to administrative space um you know the amount of administrative space that we're leasing per square foot you know on an overall basis and how that may change as we you know get out of leases and get into new leases or we house administrative staff on uh on properties that we already own um but we're not using space and we can maybe renovate it and move those folks over to the uh to a campus that we you know we can pay significantly less rent or that we're already using um but if we can again get an idea of of a metric of how much how much space are we using per um you know its effective use that might be helpful in uh in judging or measuring how we improve that right so if we go from a an expensive lease and we move um people to uh from that expense at least to a less expensive space or a space that we already own we i want to be able to measure that somehow and say this is this is the this is the efficiency that we've gained these are you know yeah there's going to be a dollar amount that's associated with that um but this is the this is the efficiency gain that we did by by making this move and other moves and they might be balanced out or offset by other moves we might have to enter into more expensive leases as time goes on typically space gets more expensive but they may be offset but as an agency and again we're looking at the strategic plan as the overall agency not necessarily you know one area or the other right but that's what we're really really looking for is you know we have one or two or three metrics that that talk about how efficiently we use space now and by making these moves in the coming years here's how we're going to show that we've improved hopefully have improved uh the efficiency of the use of that space [Music] uh and you know same thing with the fleet i mean that you know and using the gps systems et cetera i think that's that sounds great i mean that we should get good results from that but i want to be able to to tell the story of the good results from that right i want to be able to to say that we have uh you know here's here's where we are now and and here's where we are in the future uh and we're going to get constant updates on that or regular updates on that um but we have a measurement of you know how how inefficient are we using the fleet today and and how do we show how that that's improved over time by by using some of these techniques okay i agree thank you so if we move on to number three which is our priority of the technology improvements and integration the proposed data metrics will be implemented by our information technology department information technology services support and the infrastructure play definitely a critical role in achieving all of our agencies goals i know paul has been working to ensure that we're staying current and relevant with the technology and infrastructure in order to promote that connected and agile workforce the guiding principles consist of providing equitable access to opportunities resources and support investing in intellectual professional and profession personal development of the staff and students as well as providing access to instruction and technology the it department has been working already with the various agency-wide departments to ensure all staff and students have equitable access to the technology resources and that we're staying current with the emerging technology they've already have efforts in place to continue and address the technology base and skills of the staff those are being evaluated they've been working on providing training and resource materials and working with the various staff paul has also started a short and long-term technology plan which would we expect to be completed in the next one to two years and that would consist of for example expanding on the current computer refresh and replacement plan guidelines are also being drafted where the technology plan excuse me the technology department in collaboration with business services are also looking at ensuring accountability for lost stolen or damaged devices additionally the technology department has been working with odd to maximize the use of our student information system powerschool to manage the student data and we've also worked with hr business services and i t to lead efforts where we're working on implementing a document management system that will help support the expanded use of automated forms for collecting data so again i know as we've talked tonight we'll need to beef up these and and make sure we have specific data metrics um for these areas and i know paul does have some information that he provides in his board reports as well to to attest some of this information that he's already been working on any specific questions or comments hi this is shelly i'm trying to remember i believe there was a presentation you gave regarding the budget the fund specifically that goes to i.t where does that come from what budget the it department is solely funded from the general fund appropriations okay i'm wondering if we can have someone maybe work on grants specifically for it i'm sure there's tons of different types of grant opportunities where we can look for additional funds in helping both the deaf and blind with assistive technology and i think as you mentioned technology is evolving that's definitely helping us in our field and be competitive with other you know other students and other school districts so just a thought is there a grant out there thank you and we do receive funding for the assistive technology for the devices as well but i do agree with you and in working as we try to to solidify additional funding sources specific to it needs definitely would be helpful thank you okay so if no other questions or comments regarding uh the third priority the fourth priority maximize financial resources is new and was identified as being needed since it would address the allocation of the money but also ensuring we maintain a sound fiscal position with transparency integrity and efficiency as i was working with the other directors on the effective resource management i realized that the pre three priorities did not specifically address the financial aspect of the resource management and if approved this fourth priority would be implemented by the business services department i had also provided my thoughts around this priority to the finance committee in our last meeting and received some of their feedback but what we were proposing was that the guiding principles would consist of maximizing the use of financial resources on supporting the strategic goals fostering a culture of strategy and data-driven planning and budgeting and promoting a long-range view of the priorities and resource needs some of the proposed data metrics would include developing more of a sustainable annual bullish budget as well as implementing a three to five year budget forecast reviewing the current funding for each of our five programs and making sure that it's all appropriate based on data not historical need but also looking at the spend as well as any associated revenue funding sources for each of those various programs our funding now consists of legislative appropriations contributions from gifts and funds acquired through the contracts and grants such as our federal and private grants but the priority would also include trying to identify and secure the additional funding that we just talked about a little bit with some of the other areas but looking at those additional funding from other resources since we know that our appropriations are limited and revenues are not significantly increasing annually as i've shared over the last couple of months in our finance committee as well as our board meetings in last month's meeting i shared that we have not been successful in finding federal state or private funding that would help the agency in focusing on school improvement and other accountability efforts due to our non-lea status so we want to continue to build our relationships with external stakeholders such as the various legislative bodies the joint legislative budget committee and the office of strategic planning and buddy budgeting to help with increasing any available resources specific to our appropriations and be able to assist us with addressing any legislative mandates that are currently impacting our operations another data metric that we were hoping that we would be able to propose would entail developing various cost benefit analysis and reviewing the feasibility of the shared service agreements so this would also help with developing that sustainable and data-driven revenue and expenditure model by using information looking at the staffing looking at student enrollment for example further analyzing our residential program looking at the current fee for service structure and looking at the tuition reimbursement agreements that we have with the home school districts as well as annualizing excuse me analyzing the average cost of the instructional program per student in more detail which we've just talked about earlier so most of the data metrics will either be evidenced by the continued finance committee meetings the development of the annual budget and through expansion of the current improvement efforts that we've already began and continuing to implement over the last few years so yes again this would be a fourth priority that we were hoping would address some of those specific data metrics that i know president niger you just talked about specifically and that's where i would feel that that would be more appropriate in this specific um priority this is shelley i agree i feel we do need this fourth priority absolutely i guess one of my concerns though is there a cost to having additional staff to do the work or are we already using the staff that we have are is there additional duties assigned for this particular priority no it would not um require any additional staffing i do have great staff now that would be able to assist with being able to prioritize this within the department we have the grants team we also have our budget analyst as well as the other areas in the department so no it would not require any additional staffing it's already improving some of the metrics that we already have that i had talked about earlier i would just want to make sure that that's included in the monthly reports that we have with our with our board excellent thank you um that's all that i had okay um i think that's uh all that we we had for that for item four thank you miss cooper um if we look at the agenda uh we can move on to the next uh part that's the the next steps for discussion um and uh you know so we we've gone through this you know these draft um review tonight and thank you everyone for your you know your comments and i know this is going to be the the real meat of our of our strategic plan was uh you know was this meeting um so if i can get the board's uh opinion on this i think that what we can do we have another uh work study schedule scheduled for april and i know our goal is to get our plan uh kind of locked down and approved uh before the you know the end of the school year the end of the fiscal year really um so that would be in in june uh if we can get this you know kind of complete in our work study session in april uh i'd be you know i'd be pretty happy to get it out there and and maybe get some public comment on it afterwards uh you know between the april and uh june time period uh before it you know we take action on it later uh if that makes if that makes sense to uh to you or if you think there's um you know in other words we'll spend the next work study session um going over the revised draft of these uh of of these points um and then getting them ready in position to to come back and and get some public comment and approve them is that does that make sense to the other board members shelly here what i'd like to see is the revised draft the clarification the additional notes give us an opportunity to revise um and review those and come back and meet in april uh yes the the idea would be that we have those revisions you know for april so the subject of the april meeting would be uh similar to this but with the revised revised versions um what i'd like to see too is when they do revise um [Music] like pillar two outstanding student development to me what was written in that was more what we're doing now we want to make sure that we put what this is a plan this is what we're looking for doing in the future to improve and to look at what what steps we're going to take what we're going to implement to improve what we're doing now not just reporting what we're doing at this time yeah i i i completely agree lynn i mean i think we need it and you know in all the pillars but you know killer two uh you know in particular we we need an idea of how we're going to measure if we how we're going to measure what success looks like how we're going to know when we get there and you know there are things that we do now that that are on these some of these documents and you know we have to keep doing them you know whether for you know legal reasons or just good practice reasons compliance reasons others uh but the idea is how do we how do we measure how we're performing uh based on what's important to us um going forward and how do we keep measuring that uh over the next you know few years over the time horizon to this uh strategic plan uh so it seems that's our that's our plan um unless there's any other comments we can move to item six rc lynn nope i'm waiting for number six oh number six the german i don't know that um i i don't know that we necessarily need as a work study session i don't necessarily need a motion to adjourn like we do at the regular meeting um but uh but that's that's on there thank you for everyone's time today uh to the interpreters to to the media staff and the production staff uh that was able to make this possible um i know it was a long meeting but i think again this is you know one of the more important ones to to to go through these issues and uh hear what the board has to say and here with the leadership david oh yes president niko yes oh no i apologize i'll see interpreter error i thought you linda was raising your hand go ahead oh no problem okay um just just saying uh thank you everyone who made this possible uh and to the board um for for spending the time on this today and we'll uh you know we'll come back in in march for a regular meeting all right thank you have a good evening everyone thank you good night good night good night

[Applause] well it won't be a high school hockey game at olympia center without some technical issues but we're here devin dobeck alongside colin casey excited for western massachusetts rivalry matchup between the spartans of east long meadow and the falcons of minichard regional high school we are currently streaming on a hot spot because the olympia wifi didn't extend to rank two we're on rank two tonight so if there's connection issues i mean we're doing the best we got but we're in we're in a tough spot tonight but anyways puck comes down in the corner to noel trying to swing it up to the top comes to worse worse a shot on net skitters wide and now coming around again is noelle and it's picked off teddy kun trying to go the other way for me that's van zant and now teddy cune will throw it right on the goaltender truth be told we couldn't maybe colin can know but uh there was a lot of goaltenders on the roster but no one necessarily numbered so we're not exactly sure who's in that maybe you know colin but yeah no i'm i'm still slept in the dark through mass life and whatnot but all i know is this mid-chalk team goaltending's at least their concerns because they scored 13 goals last time audience is a highly potent offense that this falcons team has and now here comes the falcons question homer in the corner now behind the net genevieve bees now dobeck gaining it for the spartans and now falcons swinging it up top it's thrown back down in the corner trafficking penalty coming up here gonna go against the spartans and no possession granted there dobeck gets knocked around a little bit now miniature great pass in front and they're able to bury one early one-nothing miniature just a minute 26 in yeah good puck moving spartans unable to touch it up and miniature has dominated this early stretch they end up getting rewarded with a goal just an easy cross crease pass and didn't even have to elevate that puck to get it by and that's gavin boyce bomber i'm gonna pronounce that wrong wishing homer wishing palmer anyway spartans go down one nothing the weishau bomber had a golden assist in that big victory against aguam so his second golden season kenny kuhn dumping it in a little off balance there now going the other way a little bit of activity in the neutral zone alec nero comes in lays a little body teddy kun swings it across ice it's intercepted the row can't collect it for east long meadow and kyung caves a man in [Music] now another battle in the neutral zone haynes gets tied up now walking in a shot pads save sherwood blue canes with a little check there and puck comes behind the boards monroe throwing it back out to the top dom beck throwing it back down into the boards and now cj kolody the spartan captain going up ice braden dobeck there to receive it off the boards and now arnold able to keep the zone dobek lets it go by la flash playing wing tonight and now cj calogy fires one on that glove save just a second shot on goal for us on meadow and really the first sustained zone time they had i mean the other one was just kind of lofted from the neutral zone in on net minute shocks been really good against the boards to keep every single clearing attempt the spartans have had in spartan's defensive zone and now noelle gaining it he gets it over to terzi and now van zant walking into the zone he's picked off but zone is captain noel walking in and can't hang on to it falcons threatening again early over three minutes gone by puck goes down low thrown on net easy save for sherwood and now dobeck he gets spun around some traffic in front garvey caves the man in garvey playing defense he'll probably be seeing some more minutes with the aiden asher ankle injury and now go back collides with sherwood and here come the falcons fire big save but the rebound and they're able to convert that one that's dom terzi excellent play by terzi followed his shot great job weaving through traffic to get it in on net that's one i think sherwood's going to want to have back because he made the initial stop puck ended up about a foot and a half away from him but he just couldn't find him time in terms he's so opportunistic picks up the puck fires it past him two nothing minute jog he was definitely a player to watch coming in deadly sniper and a great playmaker goal scorer known for being quick one of three players coming off the hatch and offsides is the call 11-11 to go period one spartans trail two-nothing the other two being genevieves and i guess rocco the other one record five goals from the third line center not bad at all now caloji trying to get something going for the spartans they've had trouble scoring goals since game one versus aguam with only one in the series with west springfield and now chad o'brien he loses it teddy kun trying to collect it for the spartans now lukan's along the side boards gets it over to cune and nero almost offside but now the other way here come the falcons there goes duquette and he's running too and now a shot by worse he's caved in still kept in though they're not worse excuse me i'm falcon jersey it's hard to read the number column i'm trying to but the white on white is kind of strange now genevieve's behind the net o'brien works at the cune blue canes can't touch it by and it's swung bounced off behind the net flail that by caloji now luke kane's he makes a move luke haynes walking in on a breakaway he dekes and hits the post might have miniature goalie might have got a piece of it but luke haynes getting a chance early and then a shot comes along in excellent scoring chance really good move as well but finish it bring it off the iron mukhanes has been knocking at the door of a goal the past three games he's had golden opportunities created by himself unfortunately unable to cash in and now garvey shot his block and now the other way here come the falcons that's derek grout and he throws down i believe sherwood sherwood not happy with the no call now behind the goal garvey sherwood will just clear it that'll go for an icing and fresh legs for east long meadow now not quite i mean you have to well get a couple of guys coming back out with this icing but you know better better stretch of play since that second goal for me somebody saw the breakaway a good opportunity haynes couldn't quite finish it we'll see if el can take any momentum on it maybe get an opportunity to cut the lead in half now in a row trying to swing it cross and puck comes in and will be covered i don't know who to assume who's in goal it's either it's not powered it's either go on or i think it's got to be gallant so we're going to assume a galactic net i'll take a look also at uh last game and see who got the bulk of playing time but then again in 13-1 victory i'm sure both goaltenders got an opportunity and now walking in vanzant he makes the dick movements three-nothing falcons spartans on their heels not much sherwood can do there he's a solid netminer but with 47 and period one spartans are looking up quite the mountain you got scores up and down this falcons lineup you give them opportunities they're going to capitalize and that's what we've seen so far in this first period still plenty of time left in the first and the spartans have given up the same number of goals in the first period that they've done all season long in half period against minichog yeah definitely something to stand out and a big hit from van zant staple sherwood now laflesh he's run into a dangerous part of the boards luckily gets out of it safely and now here comes teresie what flesh can't buy and pass is knocked down sherwood tried to get it back to dobeck and it comes back in front dovak flails at it and he's knocked down in front bouncing puck couldn't get a good stick on it and now up ice here comes teresi he's thrown down wishing bomber and now teresi one timer for worse worse can't get a stick on it fouled that one off and worse sends it back in it's collected by kaloji beloji sends it around the boards to teddy kun gets it over to sherwood sherwood will just flip it in and spartans will change out teddy kuno picking it up behind the net he loses it and now here come the falcons the other way caved in is i don't have a three on the starting the lineup but that was john joe hallach it's a lot better defensively from east london you saw them muddle that entry from minitrog and it led to opportunities the other way not exactly a high quality one from pretty far out but don't take any shot on that especially if it leads to an attacking zone face-off and again if you're just joining us we remind you we are streaming from a hot spot so if anything happens i mean olympia's let us down again we're doing everything we can but it's gonna be another tough one travis arnold the low shot it's black down and now the falcons in the neutral zone picking it up [Applause] and luke haynes dumps cassaneri and now kyung takes a check to the back of the head from moriarty now luke haynes chip on his shoulder and he's gonna go interference i think it's gonna be on minute shock yeah it's one of those where there wasn't a whole lot of contact but he impeded his progress and she's tumbling down to the ice that's going to be derek grout going for two and you saw him take an awkward fall there but on this same rink over by the zamboni doors was where aj cuetta took that horrific dive into the boards and now dobak spartan power play has definitely been their kryptonite all season they have not been able to score but hopefully that can change now arnold gets it back slap shot from arnold's block down in front arnold gets it back again throws it down to nero now nero throws one on that juicy rebound no one there to bury it and it's cleared couple of good looks genevieve's on the forecheck for the falcons and narrow can't get to it and that'll go for an icing yeah great great opportunities off the face off from the spartans seems like they've been really good actually off those attacking zone draws that's where most of their opportunities have come from with the exception of that luke haynes breakaway and they'll take a defensive zone draw here but they can get set up maybe they get a quick one and cut into that minute shock early lead three-nothing falcons six minutes in now lou kane or braden dobeck and now behind the goal go back comes about to caloji cology a low shot is knocked down and puck is cleared and now arnold starting the attack for east long meadow he's run into and now reiko hit by kuhn and his ice again colin can you hear me okay because i can't hear myself but are you able to hear me yeah i can't i i'm having a little bit of trouble here dude there but um all i know is that the spartans trying to make something happen here but the minute shock defense is making it so hard on them to enter the attacking zone and with 505 to go in the first period and 20 seconds on the power play spartans don't have much to show for it puck comes in on sherwood he didn't even know it but he's able to carve [Music] 17 seconds left on the grout penalty i don't know for sure what the shots on goal would be but i think it'd be closer than you'd think it's just that miniature has gotten such higher quality looks especially on the break that has made the difference on the scoreboard and someone's tying their shoe i believe that is haynes and he's thrown out of the dot for that now garvey chopping it up to la flesh the flesh turns it right over haynes trying to touch it by he makes a man miss going into the boards awkwardly was o'connor good to see him get off now tears he the other way slicing and dicing through the neutral zone o'brien steers it to the side now la flesh making move around one man and can't hang on to it and kersey will dump it back in by this time it's been even strength for a little while now now luke haynes bank pass for chris sherwood kicks it to himself chris sherwood trying to make a dance move nothing doing there nice looking back check from the falcons and now david noel the other way trying to work it to terzi picked off by sherwood and spartans are able to clear the zone now chad o'brien under four minutes ago o'brien gets it up to picked off actually intended for the flash and now sherwood nobody home there and now the other way here come the falcons i don't have a two on my roster so i apologize but worse with a bomb it's knocked down by kalogie and sherwood will cover yeah shaw getting some momentum after that penalty kill right after that they've just been suffering i really like that second line's been headlined by tyler genovese i don't they got reward on the first goal i don't think they've been rewarded since then but i think they might have to be the best line on the ice so far tonight and now hit the outside of the post and now aiden fisher haven't said his name all night but fisher and sherwood leading the attack sherwood swim moves a man and goes into the boards and now the other way here come the falcons it's going to be wishing bomber and another shot comes in wishing bomber there in the end boards in fisher able to gather for east long meadow he'll throw it around the board sure with the first one there great play to keep it in the zone for minitrog and now fischer able to clear it haynes running with it takes another check goes down hard and now walking in a long shot from wishing balmer nothing doing there can't get through the miniature defense joe halleck with a nice defensive play [Music] and now the other way in a row and now halleck coming in and both teams having a little trouble getting something going pass picked off by dobeck can't dick around a man who would have been all alone kyun is knocked around and he takes another awkward slide into the boards seen a few of those earlier colin and now puck spit back out mid-ice and draco trying to make a move i don't know if there's going to be a penalty there or appears there will be yeah they got a trip there uh kevin tripping maybe interference as well just another instance just like the minute shot penalty where he took away his ice and that'll send i think that's arnold to the box he's trying to play this case but no avail and so minute chuck's gonna enjoy power play for the final 76 seconds so yeah puck comes back out to the point fans and across ice to noel noel over to vanzant a lot of room noelle again van zant roseanne rips one wow that one came in hard and hot that's a heck of a save and noelle chops it back over to teresie shot goes up and into the netting we'll get a face off i think dolbeck sort of stepped in in front of that one deflected that one up in the netting good job sacrificing the body 47.2 seconds 131 on the power play and on the draw will be tarzan dobeck is cleared by kaloji closing in on 40 seconds keynes is oh man run into awkwardly lose his glove and stick good to see him pop up again but a lot of heavy hits so far in this game he won't go down easy but wouldn't be surprised if he goes and lays a hit he's got that tory crew mentality where he gets hitting he he's coming in with a big one you better believe it within the next shift or two closing it on 10 seconds ago hopefully the spartans can get to the locker room without any more harm done another shot comes in juicy rebound in front haynes swatting at it nothing doing and clock will expire as falcons get one more chance 44 seconds left on the power play three nothing is the score and i believe we're gonna keep it here um anyways the first period i think was a tale of two halves in that first period first eight minutes or so it was all minutes shocked east salmon was able to kind of get a few chances here and there i think minichog certainly helped out that they had that power play at the end to kind of get their momentum back but you saw meadow held their own the final half of that period we'll see if they can kill off the remaining 44 seconds of the penalty maybe take some momentum off that into the second period yeah so as you know we're not going to do the ice here um we got two and a half minutes until second we'll start coach reed trying to fire his players up but a very tough first 15 minutes and chris sure or colin sherwood did all he could to just admit but unfortunately miniatures offense just getting whatever they want yeah two breakaways on those goals and the other was coming off a delayed penalty so sherwood wasn't exactly easy for him in those first few um just the first few minutes then again the one goal i think he wants back though is the the follow-up goal that he had the puck initially he had a save initially in front and it led to that second goal i think it was terzi who had that second goal uh not exactly you know the the ideal goal you want to give up and end up scoring another one a little bit later but you know you got you have a short memory after a period left that obviously three or three whole is tough but we know it's not impossible the bruins have been doing it every single night it seems like coming back from three goal deficits see if the spartans could surprise a few people here and cut into this deficit maybe shock the world here in west springfield luke haines obviously had that breakaway chance unfortunately hit the post kind of been the story of the spartans last few games the the chances were there throughout the period you know haynes had a great move on the breakaway the shot rick shade off the far post and then a couple of chances on the on that power play early i think the first 20 or 30 seconds that first shift on the power play was good they kind of went away from what they were doing they had trouble reentering the zone after that but we'll see what happens you know again 44 seconds the main focus right now is to kill off that penalty and once uh once arnold comes out of the box back back to even strength maybe that'll be the boost that east all meadow needs yeah and it's you know another thing we met asher out with an ankle injury he looked good in the first game against agawam um spartans were held scoreless in game two so not much to talk about with him there but he had a nifty dangle move to walk in and go right around the goaltender wait patiently and flip it right over the pad for the goal definitely a big loss and now le flesh a defenseman who is a very offensive defenseman but you know playing a role that he hasn't been used to in the prior games and tom garvey getting some minutes the junior interesting or never mind i forgot we're on the kill what i was going to say cune doesn't take too many face offs so spartans got 35 seconds to kill on the arnold penalty and it's chipped up ice falcons trying to reconvene behind the net comes out and able to be saved by worse he sends it back down into the corner and now behind the net now grout comes swung back wurst can't keep a skate on it he blows a tire and now nero running in for east long metal throws one on net and it's covered up cune might have got a little snow in the goaltender's face but let me play on yeah attacking zone draw for east law meadow if they could win it maybe chip it in deep and have arnold come out of the box if you try to set something up in the mid shot zone but it's a big gift and we'll see what happens and three seconds left on the arnold minor but now here comes van zandt with a burst of speed he chips it over noelle noel tries to go high glove nothing doing there and now moriarty going around the net he throws one on goal and it finds its way into the back of the net i believe it might have been tipped by noelle so i believe i think you're right with the goal i think it ended up hitting him up high or was it actually you know might have actually been uh look moriarty skiing in as if it was his but i think it did hit off with noel but it's it's quite possible off a spartan before going in either way tough break for the spartans just 58 seconds into the period and the puck was handed to the miniature coach so i'm assuming it was probably moriarty's goal more you're already a defenseman and yeah noel i i have a hard time believing their top line winner hasn't uh buried one in his second year but right who knows maybe it was his but anyways i'm gonna say it's safe to assume it was moriarty but who knows usually the first one to skate over to the bench is the goal score and they're pretty good about keeping the integrity of their teammates and not trying to take credit a lot of activity over in the corner boards spartans just trying to play for pride at this point they're down early garvey gets sandwiched probably a good thing there's another guy there two on one for east long meadow sherwood looking for fisher too much on the pass sherwood didn't have much time to react and now it comes out to garvey garvey fires it back in so spartans with a couple good chances unfortunately unable to do anything with them and now van zant the other way fires one in five nothing falcons tom garvey slow on the back check couldn't get there and van zandt capitalizes it's five-nothing falcons i mean he's just streaking down that right side and if you're a sniper right-handed sniper coming down the right side that's usually dangerous for a goaltender you want to protect that glove side but that leaves that blocker side vulnerable and just a rocket of a shot there from drew van's dan it's clear he's a goal scorer and he proved it right there absolutely colin haynes on the draw for east long meadow he's able to win that one and now o'brien getting it to kun kun throws it in now nero swings on in front nobody in the middle there and other way here come the falcons walking in as genovese and now in the offensive zone pass out o'connor not much on that and awkward bounce off the boards and sherwood forced to cover yeah i think that that puck that found its way through as that fourth goal in the first of the second period is one that kind of demoralized the spartans a little bit and that led to that second goal just nobody really backed there on defense and van zank going down the right side with his speed you forget about it coming into today the spartans had allowed six goals in three games but here we are five nothing falcons just two and a half minutes into the second period now in a row stick handling in his pockets picked and now the other way genevieve's trying to sauce it over and takes a bounce in on sherwood and he'll be forced to cover look at this i think the scoring summary so far through the first five the first goal going to weiss obama there's a second and then it was terzi which would be his fourth that third goal of the period was i'll get back to that in a minute but anyways puck comes out in between the hashes and swung on neck goes wide and now juicy rebound in front sure would have to make a good pad save and he covers up trying to remember that third goal of of the period for miniature um i think it was i think no i wasn't who am i kidding and another stop it's the only one that uh slipped my mind but regardless five different i believe it's been five different goal scorers for miniature yeah correct and now the flash shot comes in redirection and now we'll flush those little cross check on grout and now a deep move will flush tries to step into another man is swung on net by cassineri and now aiden fisher gets run into trying to stay with the play is fisher and sherwood takes man down he's going to go for slashing i think it's just a trip i think he just flat out took his legs out from underneath him and now right in front of the official that's a penalty ten times out of ten i think that's just kind of a uh a situation where fatigue set in for the spartans been kind of chasing the game in the second period especially and that'll lead to penalties so sherwood receives a minor for we're gonna go with tripping there never was a signal but i think whatever it was certainly a stick infraction and so face-off will be outside of the spartan defensive zone on the dot and now garvey trying to land [Applause] that can't feel good right off the bat absolutely not now teresi with speed kun gets a stick on him goes right around the net now throws one in it's redirected in front great stop by sherwood he's got to have i mean he's led in five goals and i'd say at least three of them haven't really i mean none of them been his fault but three of them there's nothing he could even do about yeah he's gotten a little bit of bad luck they've been you know i'm sure anytime you're a goaltender you let in five goals it's frustrating you think oh i can do a lot better than that but needless to say the spartans defense and discipline hasn't exactly been helping out throughout this game sherwood had allowed six goals as we said in the first three games so he's been solid in net for east long meadow but unfortunately the offense has been hard to come by 10 10 to go and now it goes into the m boards duquette there he's run into by arnold and now comes out to the point vanzant and he finds teresi back to vanzant and good play with a stick by haynes they will intercept the pass now arnold in a battle in the corner duquette comes out with it he tries to wrap around nothing there 20 seconds to go on the sherwood minor and now van zandt walking in and he goes hi guava he's got his second of the night yeah there was some traffic in front that one going glove this time vanzant it's been it's been the best player on the ice in this period no question about it there's uh you guys looking at an assist earlier too on a two-on-one had a nice little over-the-shoulder look drop pass but the pass was a little bit too far forward said he said you know what i'll just go ahead and start shooting the puck and it's certainly working out for him as well as the miniature falcons so six something falcons hopefully you're sticking with us as we continue to bring you the action but regardless spartans will definitely be using this for film a lot to pick at and we're almost halfway through the night yeah this is just a confirmation at how fundamentally sound this miniature team is i mean in all aspects of the game it seems like they're just always in control defensively there's really not been any panic when the puck's been in their end and their breakouts have been phenomenal throughout the evening so far here's an example one here they come it's gonna be salani the freshman in so we might be seeing a lot of new miniature faces with a five-nothing lead there's reiko in front and now it's gained by vreeland back out to the point shot comes in it's redirected in front and cology bats it out to the side boards another one skitters through the goal crease and now fischer playing it back on the boards and now here comes chad o'brien working at sherwood sherwood just clears the zone spartans seem to be a little gassed out there as of now 19 1 minute chug out scoring their opponents to the first game and a half and this is a hockey game we remind you not a football game big hit in the neutral zone in a row goes down along with wishing balmer and now delayed offside spark or falcons forced to regroup luke haynes turned it over there and now duquette trying to throw it in front good block down from the captain now calogi run into you don't see him get tipped over very often and now right in front of the net almost like o'brien gave it to his coal tender please please cover this buck [Applause] [Music] really similar period this uh second is to the first three goals pretty early on spartans trying to respond here if it's anything like four they'll start getting some chances late in this period but attacking don't draw for mitch just with the doctor for the falcons and now right in front dangerous place and a dangerous man in teresa he swings it back and it's gained by believe that's noel well hits fischer up high shot comes in it's redirected and now fischer trying to chop it up to dobeck dobeck sherwood gets caught offside [Music] nobody hung on to the puck a little too long yeah i think yeah i think dober didn't see sherwood coming down the left side just needed a little touch pass and it might have been a three on two coming in but you know sometimes in in these games where your team's trailing big you're just trying to get the in yourself and then getting the puck in deep and then eventually set something up that case you shouldn't see the open man haynes loses the draw and now van zandt and i believe that's tersey firing one on net sherwood seems surprised at how fast that one came in on him and now haynes is knocked over tries to move around arnold loses the puck and he takes an awkward slide i've said that like at least four or five times i feel like i've said it maybe twice all season but we've been seeing some weird checks and now haynes unable to get one on net look out now here come the falcons two on one up ice now with speed walking in rayko getting it back noelle noel finds the back of the net again nothing sherwood can do and he's just an utter disbelief spartans defense has been yeah noel just right there those are real well executed two on one it was uh it was between him and rocco racco who had five goals the other night this time recognizing his teammate was coming with him he was really patient with the puck and waited until last second dropped it off sherwood got some of that puck couldn't quite get all of it and the extra point is good um i believe that was the seventh goal of the game correct so i think they might have shut off the clock or stop changing it could still read six nothing but it's definitely seven nothing yep [Music] anyways fisher he's slashed and spartans will go to the power play yeah it's one of those where the officials will call every single time you see a stick leave guys hands even if there's some instances you know where the contact wasn't all that significant but if it looks bad they're gonna call it optics are everything with officiating yeah absolutely as it stands seven nothing falcons five thirty nine to go period two if you're just joining us uh it's been a tough night for the spartans but here they go to the power play nero fires one on that good pad save and now caloji tossing one in and falcons are able to clear [Music] cology with a nice little move there to escape the pressure but comes right out to the neutral zone and mike moriarty able to clear it and sparron's unable to even really get out of their own zone here on the power play and it's dumped in again by moriarty arnold some good fortune by miniature despite being on the pk they've got this great one-two-one set up and east salmon are just struggling to get out of their own zone right now and walking in now shot from wishing bomber and now a bomb from moriarty but yeah i mean miniature dominating even while spartans are a man up yeah right off the draw isla meadow looked good set it up and then once chog was able to get it out there was delayed offsides that allowed kill off a couple of seconds to send it down the ice since then it's been all falcons so spartans with a defensive zone draw down seven goals on the power play and now the flesh and it's spun back in gobek comes away with it the flash trying to get across ice he finds o'brien and fisher touches it in sherwood throws it fisher there and o'brien and fisher with a miscommunication yeah two guys going for the puck at once and you saw metal luckily it didn't lead to an odd man rush going the other way without with a the one guy going back without a stick and so now walking in the shot in a row can't bury one kobek gets run into la flesh shot and now o'brien a shot both shots deflected down and run into sherwood shot comes on it's deflected spartans with a little burst there but not going to be enough and it comes in on sherwood and he's forced to cover hopefully that stick's still intact or else that's going to be an expensive uh we apologize to mr fisher if you're watching at home yeah but actually it looks like aidan's gonna save you three hundred dollars it looks like it's okay brings up a story i remember one of my good friends south point office who played for uh cathedral back then now pope francis of course remember he broke his stick the start of uh middle of january and i think he broke another one about two weeks later so it was an expensive start to the new year for him unable to touch it by and now teddy kun he's gotten a road to his left puck hops over a stick he didn't even know it and now teddy kun cycling it back up to cology cology back down for cune spartans with some good zone time here kuhn or keloji way wide arnold touching it down to nero nero after the point arnold a shot it's batted down and now nero trying to weave through some falcons he loses it and now miniature back the other way behind the goal i believe that's somani starting to see a little more of now rico it's tipped up and kilojoules it down and he can't connect with haynes cleanly but haynes gets hit and that'll be a delayed penalty and arnold comes in and takes a man out and everything there's gonna be four on four now after that had the initial hook and then taking a liberty there was uh that was arnold who wasn't happy with where that stick was positioned because i think it caught whoever drew that penalty for the spartans in a soft spot because he hands yeah yeah haynes was a little shaken up there and then just that's what happens in you know seven nothing game you get a little frustrated when you see one of your teammates get uh get a stick in the wrong spot and unfortunately for spartans now it's a coincidence but they'll actually still be five on five yeah they're gonna let them go five on five off offset penalties no gretzky rule applied here in a high school hockey and now walking in and tersey buries one miniature captain and falcons up eight nothing yeah the second of the game being just a stick handling clinic going on in the attacking zone moving from his right to his left waited to get that puck all the way on his forehand to get maximum power and ended up putting it in the top shelf and not really any insurance needed but mid-chag certainly getting it here in the second period eight nothing falcons now dobeck fighting for the puck noel and it's chopped up jersey can't pick it off cology now the other way for the spartans held this wrist one around it's knocked down behind the net now 120 to go in the period and we'll get some clean ice as well noel getting it over to terzi and calogi with a nice defensive play with the stick and now walking in a shot good glove saved by sherwood on van zant yeah vancienko for the hat trick there i believe just the final minute of the second period but sherwood hey give him credit for sticking out there and still saying sharp i mean some goal is you know kind of lose their confidence and just blow out fashions i mean you're just manichalk has some snipers and spartans have not had defense so it's not necessarily been all sherwood backhander comes in dangerous place in front of the net and now taking his time duquette swings it around and now wishing palmer gloved down by duquette and duquette can't move past o'brien we have 30 seconds to go in period two and now trying to work it up nero would have been all alone but it's just batted away by garvey and it'll go for an icing yeah just uh he took his time a little bit before throwing that puck up ice he would have had the outlet pass there to narrow and narrow's been a impressive bright spot in this spartans lineup so far this year leads a team with a pair of goals a freshman he had an outstanding tip goal last game off the arnold blast but now teddy kun was he fires on skidders wide and now juicy rebound in front human gets it back out to the point with flash swinging it back around for kun kun touches in front and three seconds to go that will probably do it with flesh taken down at the last second didn't like that and period will expire falcons up eight nothing we may have to charge because we have no power source so bear with us if that is the case and we'll have a live up when the third period begins but other than that i think we'll take a break from the audio colin any final thoughts as we head into the third yeah if you're spartans you know just have strong third period something to take into the weekend um this is a really good minute shocking team they're going up against evidence of how things have gone in these first two periods so you know it the deficit doesn't prevent you from taking something out of this game and if you can go ahead and finish off a strong third period not necessarily have to outscore or out shoot miniature at all but just any sort of positive you can take from this game would be huge going into a weekend game right now i believe they're scheduled to take off this week so you always want to have that type of momentum going into a rivalry game yeah well we'll be back for the third period thanks for joining us and don't go anywhere um we'll be back here on lcat so all right i'll tell you i'll tell you when we can go now well rank two olympia eye center falcons in the words of colin clinging to an eight nothing lead as we enter period three spartans playing for pride at this point um unless you know who knows they could put up nine i'm not going to count that out just yet but colin in the third period here what's the game plan for east long meadow uh yeah i i mentioned at the end of the second period but try to find some positives take out of this game it could be winning this period you know obviously with the way the first two periods have gone that's tough ass but it could it be very well as much as just putting together some good shifts and eventually of course trying to break through and break that shutout that i think is a game plan for these next 15 minutes just you got to look you gotta you gotta forget about these first two periods and take some momentum into what your next contest will be this this team will be back in action 48 hours from now so you gotta move on and what better way to move on and have a strong third period against a very good opponent absolutely spartans will be taking on the lancers here at olympia ice center on saturday colin and myself will be on the call looking forward to that one hopefully can keep it respectable and hopefully at least pull out a win would be nice but long meadow a very good program expecting as much as we expect from chag coming in at least i'll be looking forward to knowing what happens between minichog and longmeadow when they square off but anyways here we go period three the crazy thing about this shog team is they're just getting started this year there's only their second game you saw meadow coming in this being their fourth game and now teddy kun walking in gets a shot it's blocked down in front and now down the ice cology gaining possession he spins one around kuhn comes away with it picked off by wurst he kicks it over to caloji cology throws it in and around the boards nero staples a man in and now kun gets popped up puck comes over and kaloji rings the bell that was a bomb from cology and how did that one find the back of the net yeah i mean those pipes have been on the falcon side it's all second post hit in this game not that they've needed really any help based on the way they've been playing today but just unfortunate luck for the spartans who can't fight a goal right now rocket from cology don't know how that one didn't find the back of the net he had it this is labeled yeah it was there's definitely a dent in that post i'll tell you that and now raco trying to start something up for the falcons and the flash touching it over to dobeck and now maneuvered around and duquette walking in chips it up to himself shot is deflected down by la flesh who can't seem to locate it dobeck and fisher don't communicate and finally puck is flipped up and out of play for a lucky miniature hometown fan this faceoff should come back out to the neutral zone and it will that's gonna be the far dot because it was lofted in or actually right center rice and dobeck on the draw with genovese [Music] now arnold can't get it cleanly to sherwood and that'll go for an icing minute 44 into period number three be interesting to see what the factor is for as far as ice goes because keep in mind that second period was playing on a on old ice and the fact that they didn't clean it after the first 15 minutes this time fresh sheet of ice and we'll see who that paper is and now sherwood collecting it and puck comes in and i believe over sherwood and now arnold it's tipped up and entering the zone now here come the falcons comes in and now in it right in front and backhander comes on that i believe that hit the crossbar yeah glanced off of it bad turnover and front spartans just kind of getting in the way of the puck and now moriarty throwing one on and gets up and i believe that one skidded through the goal mouth and finally they're able to find the back of the net i thought sherwood was gonna make an insane yeah it's gonna be uh one of those ibuprofen nights for sherwood the way he's been getting peppered and throughout this game and that's just gonna be another goal here to make it nine nothing but yeah you can't you can't say he hasn't stayed in that you know he's worked playing well off trying to keep some of these pucks out he's made a couple of really good saves just the spinach dog team is relentless coach reid absolutely speechless behind the bench we usually see him up and over the guys but he is back and not happy with the way he's performing and or his team rather is performing yeah this is one of those for east long meadow where you go to the lcat youtube page and you report the content and try to get taken off so there's no evidence of this one ever existing and you just move on that's kind of how this one's going to go three songs they've gotten a few chances they've just been pretty unlucky in some of these finishes that they've tried to have and we remind you mini chuck had i believe 65 kids try out for a what we'll call it 25 man team so to speak spartans had as many on the roster try out and quite the talent as many making their monster now that's one of the big advantages of having two towns in your in your region for miniature but keep in mind they're not giant towns that just is a testament to how talented this group is and now luke haynes the other way it's going to be a two on two up ice wood in a row luke haynes walks in wrists one way wide now nero throws a man down and now puck is fired in by vanzant wide and now sherwood the other way dump and chase for himself dobeck coming in and firing one couldn't get it to fisher and [Music] still coaching his team as if it was a close game let them know that hey that backdoor opportunity was wide open trying to tighten it up here i mean there's also a learning third period also for miniature good opportunity being up big to try some new things out see what works see what doesn't and arnold just steamrolled and now walking in reiko it looks like it's going to get to sherwood first so he clears it into the side boards now fisher making good play he's hooked down to look like no whistle and now dobeck on the floor check and dobeck almost he was able to regather his footing there that could have been harry as well and dobeck blows a tire for the liking of the minichalk bench and now walking in derek grout good pad safe sherwood makes another one and now again grout trying to get it up to the point good zone keep by worse and then it comes back out to the neutral zone much needed line change for the spartans they had some real tired legs out there arnold laying a hit on the glass there and shot from grout easy save for sherwood puck is fired in and now travis arnold freestone meadow his pockets picked and shot comes wide by wishing balmer i'm definitely butchering that name so i apologize but is what it is [Music] and now cune run into in the sideboards cology can't get to it duquette with a bomb not much on it not much of a bomb might have been intentionally wide because he did have a guy cutting to the net front and now good move and almost buried by wishing balmer and now trying to get it over to haynes two on two for the spartans haynes and kun duquette with a nice back check haynes sticking with it now and dumps a man who tried to hit him fisher back to o'brien looked to be knocked down in front and sherwood having to make another one he's allowed nine but you got to think colin he's got to have at least 25 saves or so yeah i mean he's been getting peppered all game especially in that second period it seemed like he's been shot after shot and he's gotten a lot of since that last goal he's gotten a lot of shots put on him as well big reason why the deficit's not even larger and now walking in here's noel makes a deep move couldn't find the back door seem to have lost possession but he had sherwood geeked out and they try a little michigan move there that would you know i would have actually liked to see that almost that was tears he almost converted it one of the more exciting plays in hockey become more popular and more and more players are growing the ability to pull that one off [Music] and now comes out in front o'brien getting it to sherwood sherwood taps it up ice that should be an icing 7 20 to go spartans have only allowed one goal in this third and final period and manitoba with the face-off win and now puck comes on sherwood he has to poke that one away and now teddy kun breaking it out too much for nero and it'll go for an icing nero probably would have walked in nero not the fastest skater but it is what it is that pass was about three four feet too far forward he was able to get that tape to tape might add another breakaway surprisingly there's only just been a one for the spartans breakaway despite a couple of odd-man rushes taking place these passes just have not connected for east palmetto and now walking in a backhander sherwood with a good pad save and now teddy kun with speed teddy cootin flying in all by himself shot right into the chest of i'm gonna say it's go on but probably not yeah i believe gallant's on the bench so we apologize number one our roster got cut off it starts with number three possible we've seen multiple goaltenders in this game as well for for manchego they might have come out in the third and made that switch and it ain't nothing deficit now grown to nine and now travis arnold take it down he's not gonna like that and now an unbelievable deep move from mike moriarty unable to complete it though he's got a fisherman already hard hit and now walking in and shot hit the outside of the post by raco and arnold and raco throwing punches yeah and this is what you don't want to see when in a nine nothing game officials quickly trying to grab control [Applause] braco will go to the box he was throwing some punches there he never likes what arnold has to say and you see the clock running here with uh nine-nothing game and probably a good thing here with emotions running high and right now i only see one uh one player in the box right now for minichog yeah so it's gonna be a as as far as i know right now with one player in the box it's gonna be a power play for each all meadow yeah the referee probably saw what i saw i didn't see how arnold initiated it but he's been known to get away with a few dirty plays in the past few games i think he saw meadows surprised because they only had four guys out on the ice yeah but regardless there's an opportunity for you so i'm gonna get on the board late so yeah well spartans will take the power play i'm trying to get this thing sorted out before they put it up on the board and the clock's still running here it looks like i got another one so are they gonna have um they might be eject i don't know they might be ejecting him from the game and i believe they will that has to be the only explanation because it's still four on the ice have him serving it instead and so sam rico ejected from the game i believe that'll be a major penalty but the clock's running so yeah i believe it'll just be the remainder of the game i mean but who knows what arnold did we don't want to pin it on raco just yet he had a heck of a game last time out five goals so and travis arnold with talent one of the better defensemen for east long meadow but and that one i think hit the crossbow arnold one of the better defensemen for the spartans but once his game goes to his head you know bad things happen and that might have been the case that led raco to throw some punches yeah you wonder if maybe that's the the reason why there's nothing up there on the board is because it's just gonna be a uh a continuous major until the end of the game especially with the running clock so regardless arnold back out there for east longmeadow and now haynes couldn't connect with sherwood and coach reed in a surrender cobra over there he's just not happy with his team and now it comes in front sherwood trying to get one on net dobeck now cology at the point pelosi shot is blocked wishing bolivar and it's thrown in by genovese uh-oh weird bounce and now arnold haynes and sure we'll just throw a long shot on net and now comes back out to the neutral zone arnold plays it for nero with 136 to go and haynes knocks a man over dobeck couldn't finish the check nero gets run into and now arnold unable to stick with it and now noel in the offensive zone for the falcons one minute and 10 seconds to go and he's going to make a smart play and take it all the way back to his own defensive zone yeah absolutely help protect shutout as well for your goaltender 60 seconds arnold taking down there and minichug unable to create a chance out of it aiden fisher with a good deep move to move by and he unfortunately loses it after the second move david noel now entering the zone for the falcons behind the net mouth 35 seconds ago probably gonna get a puck frozen shortly we saw a lot more of those than i've ever seen in the past few games but not there and now with flesh dumps grout and starting to get a little chippy oh man and he's counting the scoreboard there that was a noel pointed at the scoreboard right there and that's going to be the end of the game though final seconds ticking off as they go down over to congratulate their goaltender and a credit minichalk came out here and played a complete game start to finish nine nothing is the final thank you for joining us here on old cat we enjoyed having you hopefully spartans come out better 250 on saturday here at olympia ice center if all of us jamie on the camera colin kane and myself devin dobeck the voice of the spartans we'll see you next time

we have a special board of education being this evening but before we jump into that mrs order mr crippo here miss helen here miss ham here ms harrigan mr martelly sorry here but that's okay uh mr paragini here mr white mr chairman you you have a quorum thank you carol i ask that we stand for the pledge and i assume jeff defensively for us i pledge allegiance to the flag america into the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice this evening she's gone now uh thanks for joining us i i hope we have some audience and attention tonight i know uh we received some questions about the budget tonight's tonight's uh agendas pretty much focused on both the proposed operating budget for 2122 as well as the capital budget uh but before we get into that part we have a couple items first we have an audience uh section and for those that are watching this evening uh if you do have questions as we're discussing this and perhaps even the superintendent's update that he'll give in a second um please feel free to email us a cps budget cps budget at cheshire.k12 with any questions comments uh concerns or ideas you have as it relates to the budget um we will check obviously during the audience section we're going to talk about now and we'll also check towards the end of the meeting uh and possibly during the motions uh as we're discussing this so that being said uh dr sullin uh i'm sorry dr sullen or madam secretary do we have any audience and or correspondences even yes mr chair thank you um we have an email that was sent to the members of the board and i think administration and it reads as follows a recent article published in the cheshire herald highlighted perhaps the most positive and proactive responses we have seen in this town's public schools since the start of this pandemic i applaud dodd middle school principal mike woods for making every attempt to make this year's eighth grade trip to washington dc hopefully a reality the positivity and can-do attitude are a colorful sale in what is essentially a quote rudderless ship close quotes otherwise known as the superintendent's office and the board of education as the parent of two high school students i find the high school administration the superintendent and the board of education's unwillingness to find ways to get high school students back into the classroom irresponsible forever damaging to our kids unforgivable and reprehensible for months we have suggested and heard many ideas and thoughts all met with we can evaluate that and we can see if we should be doing that we continue to hear what we are planning to do however what we hear and what we see could not be more different in the december boe meeting it was mentioned that cheshica was going to review the high school dining situation december where was this last summer and what has changed since that comment nothing we haven't seen any action taken by the parties responsible for implementing those changes and getting our high schoolers the education that they so desperately want and need as well as the education that we as taxpayers parents and taxpayers expect in this town known for its education the two days of in-class instruction do not amount to an education and the three main remaining remote days really two and a half days are not filling the void by being left outside of the classroom add in a significant number of early dismissal days added to this school year's calendar and there is no way these two students will ever get back what they are missing that is not to say that the teachers are not trying on the contrary i believe they are doing what they can given the conditions of this rudderless ship the problem is that it is not working while approximately two-thirds of the total student population are in school full-time approximately one-third of the students in this town are not getting the education that so many people live in this town for and have come to expect for the most part any reasons few and far between as to why these students cannot return to the school obviously revolve around social distancing in the classrooms and hallways justifiably so it has been stated that chesapeake deems what is safe and what is not safe for our students so when i read the article about the washington dc trip i was a bit surprised how can it be possible to put approximately 300 students on buses bound for dc for 68 hours and mix them up put them back together to tour the sites of dc on those buses and then back on those buses for another six to eight hour trip to return home all while staying in hotel rooms but somehow we cannot find a way to get one third of our town wide student population back in the classroom we have been mandated by executive order that any travel outside of the tri-state area would require a covet-tested mandatory quarantine does that mean the entire eighth grade is going to be tested and schooled remotely for the quarantine period following their trip to dc seems possible what happens when there are asymptomatic students on the bus on the way to dc what about when that bus is now carrying this awful virus home and this becomes a super spreader within the community of course i'm sure that the administration at the middle school have collaborated with the superintendent and chesapeake otherwise they would not have gotten those eighth grade families hopes up about a trip to washington i mean that would make them as morally and emotionally irresponsible as the inept ciac this past fall with high school parent sports particularly football but if we can manage to get these kids to dc why is it that the high school administration the superintendent and the board of education along with chespercott cannot come up with a plan to get our high school kids back in school it is clear that the lack of desire to help our high schoolers is not important to the current high school administration superintendent or board of education otherwise there would be more than lip service hi-fi's and kudos to each other during the boe meetings we would actually see something happen the high school and superintendent's office very own survey results presented back in the november boe meeting clearly showed that there are multiple educational social and emotional problems at the high school level with the hybrid model when compared to their peers at the lower grade levels what exactly is the point of a survey or if you are not going to take the data and make the changes needed to correct the deficiencies was a survey done just to placate some parents was there ever a plan as to what to do with the results sadly the answers to these questions just do not matter to those administering the survey the data presented in multiple meetings and by all of the major health organizations demonstrates that in-school learning does not appear to be a significant transmitter in school look no further than the middle school in the elementary schools in town for further evidence the excuses and lack of action by those responsible for this is deafening i'm very hopeful for the 8th graders that they will get to see dc i truly believe the dc trip is worthwhile and should be part of every young student's education however ignoring the needs of the 9th through 12th graders is a much greater issue that has been ignored for months and will undoubtedly translate into years of trailing behind and always trying to catch up for that this high school administration the superintendent and this board are completely and fully responsible all while refusing to admit its missteps and continuing to avoid corrective actions maybe less pat's on the back and kudos and more eyes on the ball would help perhaps the high school administration and the superintendent could learn from the proactive actions of the leadership at the middle school for the past five months we have seen little action and lots of empty promises when it comes to the progression of bringing the high school back to a normal learning model high fives for those that sit on the sideline while watching others actually get it done it's time for those on the sideline to be sent home and this is from adam stern and i will i would like to say i disagree with most of what was in this letter thank you thank you awesome any other audience correspondence at this point no there was oh there's one comment right jeff do you have that there was one comment though the one that i had was related to budget it was um a question about the number of a parent had asked on our budget we talked about an inclusion of two elementary school positions um and of course when i made the screen bigger i lost it there but when we have the inclusion of two elementary school positions and the uh person who asked the question wanted to know where those positions were and actually they're kind of spread across different buildings two of them are actually additions here it is so the net increase of plus two is chapman is seeing no change doolittle has a reduction from to 24 teachers that's a reduction of two highland has an increase of two norton has an increase of one and darcy has an increase of one net it out it's an increase of two teachers so uh and again i i know we've talked about the fact that um our current number of students per teacher is 17.8 and we've uh you know certainly spent a fair amount of time both here and the school modernization committee um talking about the significant increase in enrollment that we're facing over the next several years even adding the two teachers the ratio is higher number of students per teacher next year from 17.8 to 18.3 by obviously half a student so i think that you know addresses the question um there's more information i would just say about our um you know our staffing and that part of the budget process in uh my budget presentation from january 14th 2021 on our website too if people want to find more information thank you jeff and uh as it so happens this evening we do have superintendents up there in cope at 19.

okay good evening everyone it is uh about six o'clock here on february the 4th 2021 we have a meeting of the planning committee for the cheshire board of education vin can you do the roll call please yes i will good evening everyone mr martelly president mrs hallin here mr white nice to see him sorry here mr martella you have a quorum and all your community members present can we please stand for the pledge of allegiance yes we'll bring up the flag okay i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all agenda item number two um audience do we have any comments from the audience emails received then no i just checked there is no audience email or comments okay we're gonna move right into agenda item number three this is a pretty light agenda the uh main item tonight is is we have ecg we have michael sam sam who's here to do a presentation did i pronounce that correct song got it uh to do a presentation based on his findings about solar installation uh potential um district-wide so i believe michael you were going to share your screen and walk us through the presentation one second i'm not good at it i don't okay you should see the pdf yeah okay great all right so you want me to just jump in yeah go right on okay this is to be probably an intermediate step um last year we took a look at roof mount systems we are revisiting now looking at ground mount systems but there is some combination of ground and roof mount um i will go through the material you have this as well um so i won't get into every detail of it um but the bottom line is that we've looked at four different facilities two of those you have the prospect of being able to meet 90 of your electrical energy requirements at those sites and two of the sites you can meet between 15 and 34 of the energy we can go back and revisit whether we're looking at roof or ground or other areas on the site um and refine this as as we need to refine it so view this as an intermediate step for comment and for any changes that you'd like to make okay okay um what's included in the document set is a baseline utility history um for the most part it's based on the eversource uh digital download which does not include all of the details of the utility use but it is enough to establish a baseline um it's important to establish the baseline that you don't want to install more equipment than you need you don't want to over produce in general under net metering you'll get credit if you produce more than you use at any given time any minute any day any month but if you over produce on an annual basis you're compensated at wholesale rates and so it doesn't pay to over produce and so that's the reason for being very careful with the baseline um we began from a site plan markup that had suggested locations and those have been analyzed and helioscope is the primary tool that was used uh to do the preliminary systems assessments these should be viewed as preliminary to the extent possible i've optimized the design that you're going to see but we can always tweak and and move systems around so at a high level the baseline utility data summary for the four facilities and the um seven meters that we are considering are ranked in order of production there are two um utility accounts at the high school that are significant and between the two of them the consumption is about uh one and a half million kilowatt hours a year um highland elementary school is next in line as a single facility um doolittle is next in line and norton is next in line the two smaller meters at the high school probably don't want um installing renewables on you could certainly look at site rearrangements of supply and meters and service accounts but for this assessment uh those two smaller meters the ball field and the small meter um at the high school have been disregarded uh in going through for each of the facilities um what i'm going to show you is the uh history baseline that we have available the one different is the high school regular account that we got later that's based on 12 monthly statements and analysis of those which is actually very good because it leads to a lot more insight into demand and how the tariffs are being applied for that particular meter um 2020 was an unusual year uh 2021 continues to be an unusual year and so what you'll see is the selected baselines include to the extent possible a full energy consumption year which typically is 2019.

um this year we asked that we asked him to do everything for us uh you know offensively he caught the ball he carried the ball on defense you know he made tackles he you know made interceptions he deflected passes and on punt returns and kick returns he was our return guy so um we asked a lot of him and you know he he really provided he uh along with um you know being first team all county he was uh he was uh i believe he was in second team all group five which is the biggest group in the state of new jersey and um you know he's gonna you don't replace a caleb bonaparte but um you know i thank you for your service man it's been great um and uh last and certainly not least um number 70 senior muhammad abu drabo who was a three-year starter for us he's a two-time first-team all-county selection um he's a 4.0 student and right now i believe he's deciding whether to go to ithaca or montclair state university um you know his season got cut short you know uh this year but uh he was the heart and soul uh of what we do and who we are and um he's just uh you know he's just a very very very invaluable piece we were 4-0 with him we were four and three without him so that just goes to show you how much he meant to us and uh those are the three selections for um for football thanks uh coach thank you congratulations to those students it's great to hear uh about what they've accomplished off the field as well they're certainly very well accomplished on the field congratulations to those students um thank you there he is number 10 kyle velas with uh what was kyle's gpa even though it was originally set up different uh both teams are remarkable this season and uh our girls were led by senior mia duback who had probably the best season in the history of clifton girls cross country she was won every race at garrett mountain except for one she set course records at garrett mountain for us as well as holmdel and darlington she recently signed a scholarship yeah that's mia duback um she she's was helped through our season by our other first team all county young lady as sophomore remy duback who i used to refer to the two of them as uh team duback because they're phenomenal they're both great leaders great inspiration to the team who was league champions and second in the county and finished fourth in the state section our boys team was led by an incredible season by jacob herrera who won every race except one also at garrett mountain set school records at darlington and uh also at garrett both mia and jacob were the state sectional champions it was probably the greatest 40 minutes in the history of clifton cross country they both won state sectional championships helping them out as another first-team all-county runner for us is senior nick ross who's put in four dedicated years improving every year to finish up with a great first team all county year and also our third and final boy and fifth overall team member to make first team old county first team first year running for us sophomore harrison schiff who was second overall on our team and we have great teams coming back and i want to thank everybody who supported us and and i thank you all in in anticipation of our successful return appreciate what i know will be a successful return and a cooperative effort by everyone in the community thank you dr valeski so we're going to start off the evening with uh some budget manager reports bernie would you like to uh introduce what we're going to see tonight please yep absolutely so i will begin uh with a um a brief overview in terms of the development process various aspects to our development process beginning at the school level how we do the individual school budgets is based on the projected enrollment um we look at historical data to ascertain what the per pupil costs would be and the purpose of the school budgets is to support the day-to-day school needs the school budgets do not budget for staffing or a new program those are those are budgeted through other areas in general outside of the school budgets our budgeting process is on a modified zero-based budgeting basis and what that means is that we do not provide uh fixed allocations uh to the various budget managers uh each year there may be new components to a budget that could be one-time expenditures one-time initiatives and so while that may be approved in one year we deduct that out of their uh budget for the following year and so it reduces the amount of funds available and any new initiatives new funding priorities are requested that is not to say that there are things that are fixed and not reviewed every aspect of the budget is reviewed and we begin the process uh actually in september is when uh budget managers begin to construct their budgets and then we proceed from there into october and november and having discussions at the individual budget manager and central office level and now we have advanced to presenting budgets at the board finance committee having conversations there and in turn uh those advance further at the board level as we are doing this evening zero-based budgeting in certain areas for example with special education tuition we don't know what those numbers are or they actually change significantly from year to year so we start from a zero base um what are the actual enrollments for out of district tuition and um what we anticipate those to be for the following year based on students that we know are aging out so we start from nothing and work our way to what that actual budget needs to be so that's just a brief of the overview on the development process um we'll move forward now and the first discussion tonight is with the academics department we have dr bolli to speak to that hi good evening thank you i'm pleased to share some highlights from our proposed budget for the next school year so the proposed budget for the department of academics supports the work of each of the content areas listed here this proposed budget also supports the work of the assistant director of alternate programs the profes director professional learning evaluation and assessment as well as the director of curriculum and student achievement the resource allocations in this proposed budget reflect the mission of the department of academics meeting the needs of all learners with a lens on equity to that end this proposed budget considers our students who may be in need of additional support through home instruction or our flex program embracing an rti model this proposed budget also provides for tiered supports and intervention for students who may be struggling academically this work will be more important than ever as we endeavor to assess and remediate any learning gaps due to covet school closure meeting the needs of our english language learners continues to be a high priority as well this proposed budget provides funds to translate all parent communications and increases support for our students who are learning the english language we understand the importance of providing high quality professional learning opportunities for all staff this proposed budget supports pd for every category of staff member in our east brunswick public schools we strive to keep every member of our team at their best professionally and in compliance with maintaining current certifications required to perform the duties of their position the department of academics strives to support our 21st century learners in cultivating the skills they will need to lead productive lives to that end we offer a wide range of interesting and exciting choices in our schools some highlights that this proposed budget dr bowley um we've lost your audio bernie uh can you text doctor i'll take care of texting dr boley see if she can take her screen off that might help victor did you say that you wanted the screen taken off and returned to the galley view i'm going to no ma'am i'm going to i'm going to ask dr bully to take her screen off okay just use audio just waiting for a response from her dr boley is joining us again she had lost her connection she's now back online i'm so sorry i apologize can you hear me now we can't okay great super so um yes i was talking about supporting our 21st century learners in cultivating the skills they will need to lead productive lives to that end we offer a wide range of interesting and exciting choices in our schools in this budget some of the highlights that we support here in this budget include resources to engage our students in rich mathematical thought discussion and problem solving opportunities media centers as the hub of research in our schools to strengthen both critical thinking and research skills for all of our students new reading units and other instructional resources to offer interesting culturally relevant books for all of our students and to help promote interdisciplinary connections across grade bands and disciplines transportation and fees to support the fairview trip for our sixth graders as well as science instructional resources materials and safety equipment all of which promote phenomenon based inquiry in our classrooms also additional sewing machines to expand our fashion program series into marketing design fashion construction and retail helping to bridge our engineering design and marketing classes the department of academics is committed to providing world-class arts education in all of our schools this budget supports varied opportunities including artists in residence to visit our schools choreographers for our theater productions creation of an instrument refresh cycle cutting edge software for our music tech and digital music classes supports our marching band and the expansion of our elementary band program and purchases a new outdoor kiln at the high school to support the firing portion of the high school ceramics curriculum this slide shows a visual breakdown of this proposed budget for the department of academics before i conclude i'd like to sincerely thank dr velesky and this board of education for both your leadership and your unwavering support thank you mrs becker at this time would be um appropriate for the board to put forth any questions you took the words right out of my mouth um can we return to uh or do you want to leave this up or can we return to the galley view bernie so i can see everyone here absolutely okay does anybody have any questions for dr bolling i do actually dr bully thank you for that very uh comprehensive um i was just curious i don't think people are even aware that um you know we we celebrate the incredible diversity in this town and we're we're thrilled about it um the amount of languages spoken in our schools is 70 80 different languages so there were a few charges for translation services for various pieces of the curriculum i don't think that um people are aware of um that we that we provide this is this for this is this primarily for parents um the translation services so that they will be able to parents who don't have english as the first language that's right we translate um just about all parent communications in multiple languages based on the population the target audience for the communication um we also tr have a need to translate um international transcripts when students are moving into the district uh to get a sense of what courses they have taken prior and where we should be placing them hey thank you um i also had another question about fairview um the question is fairview uh i am i'm kind of thinking that it might be hard this year because of the constraints of the pandemic still what are your i mean i know you don't have a crystal ball but um please remind me what we did last year did we do anything any programming in place of the actual trip itself um the actual uh site was not open we're not sure what to anticipate this spring but um we do understand the importance of this experience for our students and we are brainstorming with both the leadership in the science department and the building administration of any kind of alternate experience for the children that's that's what i was going to say if we were providing some kind of an alternate programming um for them uh that would just be special for the sixth graders and bring out certain aspects of the program good to hear love to hear updates about that as we get closer of if we're not able to use the site what what you are planning that would be great we'll do anybody have any questions barbara i just wanted to say thank you for the expansion to fourth grade band that's fabulous for the elementary students um because uh at this time we had only had the uh um you know the instrumental like violin viola the strings but now there are a lot of kids who are interested in band and they can start it earlier so that's fabulous so thank you we have mr hong and mrs i'm sorry i was just saying mr hong and mr winston had their hands up okay lee boo then jeff no jeff is just waving hello goodbye okay leewoo dr bullitt thank you very much for the wonderful uh uh brief i have two questions for you to clarify first you you mentioned the uh the budget for the response to the intervention and second you mentioned that uh the budget for defensive driving courses so would you please add uh elaborate more about these two items and how what's your plan to uh come to to apply this uh or uh just two issues such as how you going to teach the different driving courses or how what are you going to do with the response to the intervention certainly they will the the rti model that we are employing um is is comprehensive um we are looking to continue our partnership with teachers college to really strengthen that core literacy instruction for all students as a basis of our tier one support and some of the other items you can see in the budget including the orton gillingham training the wilson materials are also part of our rti plan providing a tier two intervention for our students um the flex program is in the budget as well and uh that could be uh considered a tier three intervention for some students who may need that um and regarding i i didn't hear the second part of your question a graphing course is that what you know defensive driving club courses in terms of driving oh defensive driving yes that was a professional development opportunity provided for our bus drivers they need to keep current in their field as well and stay on the cutting edge of knowledge so that they are totally equipped and professionally ready to to provide the best services to our students so that that was something that was um offered for them okay thank you thank you and jeff just to clarify you don't have a question okay okay anyone else thank you so much dr bully very good presentation thank you and bernie next yes so next we have our information technology budget and mr nicola tronica our chief information officer will be discussing that well good evening everybody i want to start by showing my appreciation towards this board and dr velesky for understanding the importance of technology in our environment you know the ability to do things the right way and not cut corners has allowed us to do some amazing things without compromising reliability or security uh and i would also be remiss if i did not acknowledge the efforts of the amazing dedicated and talented team of people in the technology department that helped to make these visions a reality so the information technology budget supports and maintains technology all across the district to give you kind of a bird's-eye perspective of what it encompasses we have approximately four thousand uh windows laptops that are used in our one-to-one uh that's both for students and faculty we have about seven thousand uh chromebooks that are used for one to one we have about three thousand pcs and macs that are used throughout our buildings and 760 or so access points that basically give us end-to-end wireless coverage in all of our buildings some of the rooms can support up to 500 people at a time although over the past year they have not been put to the test every one of our classrooms has some kind of display technology and most of the classrooms have interactive technology such as a smart board or an interactive flat panel we have two complete data centers that give us complete redundancy for communications and all of our major systems and we have about 10 000 managed user accounts and we also have the ability to see exactly when and where each account is accessing any of our systems so this gives us tremendous insight into cyber security threats such as hacked accounts it also allows us to be proactive in protecting our faculty and students against these threats and it helps troubleshoot when people are having troubles accessing things which is really great during remote learning almost all of our applications and systems are accessible from anywhere with an internet connection and we like to follow the philosophy of leading edge not bleeding edge we try to do our due diligence to work with our curriculum department make sure that we're being innovative while still minimizing risks to the district next slide so some of our enterprise systems include our student information system our transportation system our finance and human resource systems email and endpoint management which makes it possible to manage those uh you know thousands of computers that are mobile in the field right now we have our dedicated internet service which currently provides us speeds of three gigabytes a second uh with the ability at the flip of a switch to increase to 10 gigabytes we're able to monitor our internet bandwidth both in real time as well as historically this way we can kind of ensure that we have the speed to support what we need right now for instruction uh without spending more than we have to one of our new additions this year is a system that allows us to measure our employees skills in spotting cyber security threats and phishing emails and provides us the ability to allow them specialized training in those targeted areas we also have some print and fax management systems which have been allowing us to dramatically cut paper consumption by integrating multi-purpose copiers with our email system and online data repositories so we can greatly reduce the need for printing both of these systems also give us extensions extensive reporting which gives us the ability to target areas that could be improved next slide the budget also covers software services and licensing for instruction so adaptive learning systems like discovery education career in college readiness support for special education next slide curriculum and lesson planning of course our learning management system which we use at churchill in the high school which has made the transition to remote learning this past year is so much easier we have the ability systems for staff evaluation and professional development and one of our newer implementations is a data analytics dashboard that allows us to create and monitor key performance indicators these indicators allow us to kind of see at an early stage students that might need extra support and they also allow us to make more informed decisions next slide so here you have a visual representation that summarizes the budget categories as you can see the largest spending category is for computer equipment peripherals and network infrastructure we have a dedicated budget for these types of assets to allow us to stay with in a reasonable age limits of these pieces of equipment the second largest bucket is what we spend for our enterprise systems that support the entire district and this is followed by systems and resources that are directly uh related to instruction and then next we have systems that are focused kind of in those specialized areas and now if anybody has any questions i would be more than happy to answer them and hopefully you're all still awake we are um bernie could you please oh great um any questions and then susanna then jeff so nick thank you very much for your job and for your budget is it technology community chair person i have more contact with you personally than maybe than other board members i know how hard you and your team work during this difficult time i want to thank you personally and i read your budget you asked a equipment repair uh budget eight thousand dollars now you are telling me that you we have more than fourteen thousand device including the the chromebooks pcs all those things i just curious how this 8 000 knowledge you do to repair equipment anything and it will be very expensive now i just curious how this 8 000 dollars can help you that is a very good question uh so we do this in a few different ways first of all our devices that have insurance we get reimbursements from the insurance company the technicians that we have on staff are very capable and they do most of the repairs in-house so we basically buy replacement parts in bulk and we do the repairs ourselves um if a device isn't covered by the insurance and it's you know let's say malicious damage the families will typically pay for the parts um but i have to tell you all in all we don't have a huge amount of um you know a damage to the devices when you consider how many devices we have i would say we have much less than uh an eight or seven percent damage rate it's very low and you budget a lot of money for the kronos and the business plus would you please uh talk a little bit about those two projects so you know business plus is one of our largest applications it takes care of uh our hr system it takes care of all our finance our budgeting invoicing purchase orders um and it really reaches you know every corner of the district uh kronos is you know the system that we've been working towards implementing which has had some challenges just because of the complexity of you know the nature of what we do when you consider that people have different positions they have different rates of pay it's it's kind of been a challenge to get everything fine-tuned to work perfectly for our environment however the new team that we have over there has been really great and i'm looking forward to explaining that a little bit in more detail in our next upcoming technology committee meeting which we're working towards scheduling thank you very much nick thank you okay so susannah then jeff um thanks no i i it came up at the finance committee meeting when we went through the budget and just you know the readiness and the preparations and the foresight of the technology preparations really you know got us into a good position for what we faced a year ago so um and and not only that not just in terms of preparedness from a hardware uh and software perspective but also from a personnel perspective and just hearing about you know i know when we were start starting to roll out one to one i was very worried about you know the cost of repairs and you know how big of an issue that was going to be it's like you don't even hear about it it's you know as you mentioned it's it's a low it's a it's a it's not a big problem and and your staff is positioned to actually do the repairs which i i find just really impressive so just a big shout out and thanks to to you and your entire staff uh for for all the hard work uh over the past year talk about you know going from a department that's kind of in the background you know it's one of these quiet departments that you make everything work and you make everything work to becoming the center of attention and you know when the systems go down it's like you know uh but i i haven't seen too many ah moments right it's been really just amazingly smooth you know a few bumps along the way but uh just i think just an amazing job overall so i just want to say thank you well thank you susannah as i mentioned before we are so lucky uh most of the people in the technology department have been there 15 plus tiers and they are so dedicated to the students the faculty and the community i'm very lucky that we've had them to support uh the community chef uh yeah nick i i'm not going to repeat everything that mr just said other than the fact that i completely agree with all of that you know being on the finance committee um also you presented your budget uh the other night is a preview uh to what you have going on and i have to tell you it was it i had a i had a lot of trepidation knowing that this budget was coming and i and i expected something completely different um i expected to report back to our stakeholders that uh the same thing that one might say and raising taxes i thought it was going to be an absolute frightening scenario and the ability that you've kept these costs in line you told a story the other night how you were able to secure uh what were they video cards uh from from the manufacturer to keep a stockpile and make these repairs in almost real time i you know being involved with kids in this district i got to tell you i haven't heard of any uh real issues and you put a number out the other night that i think you should really wave the flag on did you say the other night only about well what was it you told a story the other night about repairs of of a ridiculously low fraction if you can remind me i think you said 25 or 30 machines it was in the neighborhood of probably 25 to 50 yeah 25 to 50 uh occurrences that were not covered by another source where the district kind of had to pay the costs out of pocket you know our students have been very kind of protective about their equipment and they've taken very good care of it that's amazing out of how many machines so let's just say 50 out of how many we have you know somewhere in the neighborhood of what does it dr bully maybe 9 000 students and you know probably 85 to 90 percent of our students have taken advantage of our one-to-one program it's unbelievable well uh i think we're gonna have to fight to keep you here because i can't imagine any corporation would be just dying to get you so uh quiet jeff let's let's um i'm i'm happy you're here you've done yeah i know you've just done an awesome job and it's so nice to stay running so well so lean uh really delivering to uh to the taxpayers to the students to the teachers absolutely i can't say enough i i came out of my meeting with you the other night so excited and i'm really glad you had a chance to tell really what's going on behind that curtain because you are just doing awesome awesome work so thank you thank you jeff me and my team absolutely love what we do and thank you for giving me the chance to be such a big nerd i i appreciate that and nick you would be miserable in a big corporation where you you you love working in a school district i was in a big corporation before and i can't tell you how much more i love this it really is a family uh you know good this meeting is being recorded right perfect okay um i have a question but uh was there somebody else's hand who was up that i didn't see okay so nick um i want to echo everything that um jeff and susannah said uh your what you have done is enabled us to be able to be as successful as we have been in our remote and hybrid remote programs you and your entire team are to be commended so i have a question about professional development outside of the professional development for our staff outside of the formal professional development days and workshops our staff is more dependent on technology than ever before to deliver the curriculum to their students what kind of support do we have in place for them every single day so one of the things that's great and it was expanded this past year you know we have our instructional coaches now at hammerschool churchill and the high school and they are so important to the success of the teachers especially right now with remote instruction um we have a good working relationship with them so we can kind of see where we need to you know give a little more pd or um you know see how we can work one-on-one with those coaches so that they can kind of turn key over that training to their to their teams um and we've just tried to really go out with the principals and the faculty uh you know nicole tibbetts and myself we visited almost every school to see what their challenges were this past year to try to find solutions for the teachers and you know we try to do as best we can with what we're given and on on a daily basis we have um support that teachers can reach out to as uh if glitches come up or questions about if there's something they want to do with their class uh remotely and they're not able to figure out how to do it we have that kind of uh hotline or whatever you want to call it a support desk available we have our help desk line which is available to all faculty students and parents and we also have two different help desk cues we have ones that you know are for staff and students and then we also have our parent support at ebnet.org which is for parents uh people that don't have an e-network email address that was my next question have you know questions and sometimes it's a little challenging trying to figure out exactly you know where that problem lies but um you know we know how frustrating it could be for a parent that has a child at home and they're trying to get online and they can't connect to the class and you know we try to be as supportive as possible thank you that's exactly what i was going to ask that the challenges our parents are facing as well and um you answered that so thank you mrs becker could i can i make make a statement of course i just wanted to say because we have dr bolli and mr electronica here giving their presentations tonight but they they are two critical uh departments so they lead two critical departments with as as nick said a lot of talented people in both those departments that were forward-thinking enough uh well before the pandemic to position us in in a situation that we were not reactive at all we were proactive uh even in terms of um as we started this school year many in the community may not remember this but there were there were embargoes that were in place uh for shipment of products and so nick and his team had been proactive in getting orders out and we got materials and devices relatively quickly after the start of the school year where other districts were struggling to do that so i'm really appreciative of all the efforts they put into not only supporting our students our staff and our families during the pandemic because this has become a very very new environment for so many people even though after this much time it's beginning to seem routine in some ways but this this was years in the planning to prepare for this and we didn't even know this was coming so to that i'm sincerely appreciative of both them and the board for supporting all the ideas that we put forth to you that uh cost money uh in years prior to this to prepare for this thank you dr velesky any other board members thank you again nick excellent job great job thank you so to bring this to a close just a note on our key budget dates coming up met february 18th march 4th and march 18th are the next budget presentations before the board the governor's budget address is slated for february 23rd that is of course subject to change and the reason that is key is because uh within two days of that budget address that is when state aid data is released so we are anticipating that information uh by around february 25th bernie what is your personal ball or network rumors smell telling you about um any buzz about state aid this year um i think uh right now as i've said at finance committee hard to have a crystal ball but i think uh at what we can what we should hope for is uh no reduction is what we should hope for um and the best situation would be that we actually saw an increase but i i i'm not holding my breath on that and uh you know we're trying to be conservative in in our budgeting right now um and uh be prepared for whatever options or whatever issues uh face us um so uh key dates uh for the board uh tentative budget adoption will take place march 18th it's legally required and we're um within the time frame that it must occur uh the public hearing on the budget will be in may that's may 7th and then a final adoption of the budget may 13th so we've got some time before we need to get to the end game um and just one thing just to emphasize is that coming up with the tentative budget the key there is tentative it's not the final budget uh there's room to be able to make modifications if we think they're necessary uh between then and the public hearing and that's all i've got on budget thank you any final questions board members before i move on to the good of the calls for the public okay the good of the cause of the public members of the public may provide comments at this meeting through zoom by entering the url meeting id and password you see before you on the screen in order to be recognized use the chat feature select the zoom meeting host then enter and send your name to the host you will be recognized to speak when your name is called and individuals will be invited to speak in the order in which we've received your request the board of education recognizes the value of public comment on educational issues and the importance of allowing members of the public to express themselves on school matters of community interests to protect the privacy of all students and staff concerns regarding individual students and staff members should generally be addressed by first meeting with the appropriate administrative staff all participants will be limited to three minutes each is there anyone wishing to address the board tonight well yes we have uh first in the queue is dana's and vicki good evening everyone so first mr latronica i want to thank you very much for all you do for our students and staff and i really want to thank you for the amazing accolades that you gave to your team because you truly are a dynamic team so thank you for that that was very like heartwarming tonight oh thank you dana you know they're my family so i love them and you truly that is the case yes so thank you and you do an amazing job um i want to thank dr velesky tonight for engaging in critical conversations with the east brunswick education association in regards to return to in-person instruction we value your commitment to continue maintaining safety protocols we also value your willingness to ensure our students are engaged in the best possible instruction for our students as president of the eba i look forward to continuing a productive progressive conversation as we bring our students back to hybrid learning because you know what we have been exceptionally successful and we will continue to be a model for the state because of our collaboration partnerships are essential and we value your open dialogue and in closing our staff has done an exceptional job throughout this pandemic in every single case and i am so incredibly proud of them and i'm also thankful for them and for the support that we receive so thank you thank you dana okay next we have melissa lennon okay hello melissa hello thank you for your time i spoke at the last meeting and there were some comments that were made after the fact that i'd like to start by addressing first off barbara my condolences to you and your family on the passing of your father unfortunately i've also lost family members and friends during this pandemic and it's been a very sad time for many people you commented on our teachers and i couldn't agree with you more i have nothing but wonderful things to say about all of the teachers staff administration and mrs payet at frost elementary school i'd also like to acknowledge that my son is very excited to go back to school next week to see his friends and his teacher in fact more than 50 percent of the children in his class have opted for in-person schooling so what we're seeing is the majority of parents agree that in-person schooling is in the best interest of their child and what we all know is research research has also shown that students in a virtual setting unfortunately comparable to in person that they're falling behind academically and also unfortunately it's mentally and emotionally they're struggling from online learning and the lack of socialization so while i appreciate the progress and i am excited and more importantly my son is excited to go back to school what what i and i know other parents are looking to see is for this administration to quickly move to a five day a week in schooling option especially for elementary schools the local private schools have been offering this option since september other local public schools have been offering this option successfully since october over and this is exactly the option that i and i know other parents are looking for and i have no doubt that our district is capable of having the same success and i don't think any parent should feel that they need to pull their child out of our public school to to get a quality education and unfortunately that's what's happening and it's happening to the extent that now there are waiting lists for these private schools and regardless of how anyone feels if you see parents removing their children from public schools and putting them into private schools it's not a sign of success on every level so i think my frustration and i can tell you the frustration of other parents is we don't feel that you've been listening to what we're telling you and we're watching our children struggling academically and parents know firsthand what is in the best interest of their child and what is and what's not working so what i'm hoping is that you listen to what i other parents and students are telling you and we make the changes that are needed to help our children and we open the schools thank you for your time thank you i'm sorry we have no one else in the queue okay seeing no one else i close the public portion and we move on to tonight's agenda okay starting with can i please have a motion for item one on the board of education agenda second by laurie is there any discussion all those in favor opposed abstain motion carries next item is we have one item on our community programs agenda can i please have a motion for that move by lee wu second by jeff again um anyone who is watching could you please make sure you're on mute we're getting a little feedback thank you so much again okay move by leigh wu second by jeff is there any discussion all those in favor i have a question vicki sure that's any discussion sure go ahead oh um is this something new do we have this originally the first time around with the remote learning centers for staff or was it the request no we we have uh had the remote learning centers in place um what we've done is uh really carved out a per diem rate because prior to this we did not have it on a per diem basis we did have a request uh that was coming in for uh the per diem basis and so to the extent that we can accommodate it uh we will we will be permitting that although i knew we had them i was referring to the fact that it was staff which is a great idea you know what i got offered that uh but it was on on a larger commitment basis so now they have the ability if they have child care issues last minute you know within 24 hours they can yeah we need we'll need one business day nervous yes yep it's a great idea okay any other discussion all those in favor opposed abstain motion carries moving on to our financial services agenda can i please have a motion for items one through three oh by laurie second by mark two mark angelo is there any discussion uh jeff and she's then susanna i'd like to have number one removed and voted separately for discussion so we'll need uh then um it sounds like you're making a motion to separate that i am i'm sorry bernie you're absolutely right i'm making a motion to have number one uh removed for uh both separate and discussion so you want a table uh no that's that's different table uh you wanna uh you wanna have a conversation have that separate discussion not clumped with the one through three bernie yep understood so we have a motion um uh mrs becker will need a second on the separation okay can i please have a second on the separation mark sismar second by mark is there any discussion all those in favor opposed abstain okay motion most marc angelo i'm sorry what were you raising your hand and we're going to abstain okay um so for now we're um looking for emotion on items two and three yes so we're going to continue now on items two and three okay can i please have a motion for items two and three now move by laurie second by barbara is there any discussion will the secretary please call the world mr carangelo yes mrs chu yes mr sismar yes mrs gwas yes mr han yes this is lax yes this is reese yes mr winston yes president becker yes motion carries and now bernie we are uh we're now um on the item number one so we have that separated out um so let's uh you'll need a motion on that and then right got it okay item number one contract carer insurance arena uh can i please have a motion still move guy move by jeff second by laurie is there any discussion yes uh i'm i'm a little concerned about this for a couple of reasons uh first and foremost uh we we've discussed uh in this board uh potential outcomes for graduation and alternatives accordingly uh last year we were in the graduation separate parts on the field and of course that was during the most uncertain and peak times uh and we really weren't really uh didn't really quite know what was going to happen uh we've we've talked about a variety of ways that we would approach this uh and i've heard suggestions even to the point of putting all students if if it made sense uh on the field at once or of course the alternative being splitting up amongst groups that we've done last year and of course all of that is dependent on the same numbers that dr volesky uh has been paying close attention to in terms of school in terms of bringing the kids back to school this particular item number one for the cure is a non-refundable deposit on on going into that arena where i would say the likelihood based on the same statistics and numbers that dr velesky is measuring in bringing people back into the classroom it is highly unlikely that that will happen uh at the levels of bringing all of those students plus the parents into the arena i think it's foolish money to be spent at this time uh so my question would be this instead of throwing the baby out with the bath water does that insurance need to be secured now time to make that decision as we gather more data if it does have to be uh secured now reasons why uh to which i really wouldn't quite get i i think it would be foolish for this board based on uh some of the questions that remain in terms of aid and budgeting within this district to spend even fifteen thousand dollars in what would be likely a very poor bet mr winston if i if i could and then bernie if you wouldn't mind on the financial part of this the graduation is is something we plan for in every budget whether it's at your arena with transportation for our students to get there or whether it's on the field but i think the reason for the um item on the agenda is we want to reserve our option for the cure arena we believe that if if there in fact is a state of emergency and there is a pandemic this does become a refundable deposit on the cure arena right mr julian yes and so this was really to hold our place jeff as an option um and then we had um we just had i don't want to speak for the you know for mrs lacks in calendar uh but we had a we had a meeting last night about um you know talking about the cure arena and how important that is to graduation now i don't know if this is going to allow us to do it as you suggested uh but i think it was just here as an option for us to consider i do not know tonight how much more time we have to exercise this and not in and um jeopardize our place at the cure arena i just don't know that yet but fair enough yes no that's great and i appreciate that answer so then i would uh i would opt for the second part of your response on that uh i'd be more comfortable voting on this knowing that uh today is the day that we must and at this point based on what you just said i don't think we have that information i don't think we necessarily know that we are in a deadline so therefore i feel it's in the best interest of all that this gets tabled until that gets answered mr julian i just wanted to defer to you do you have any information that i don't have about the the timing on the cure arena contract no i i don't have that information not at hand okay um it was susannah then i saw marco angelo and now just laurie so uh susannah jeff addressed um my questions so uh we can move on to lori i actually use marco angelo first well i'm new to the calendar committee last night we had the meeting and i don't know exactly the date but if we don't secure this i think soon they can't hold the date or they can't hold it so other schools want this and jeff um you did a great job with this thank you for opening our eyes to to that question i appreciate you doing that because that was a great thought process man thank you but uh i know lori has probably a better answer than i um thanks mark um well no what i was tuning into which could say i had the same concern is the non-refundable aspect to the thought of making fifteen thousand dollars disappear but as dr volusky juliana said um because covet is i mean not an act of nature but the pandemic is um something that gives us the ability to get the deposit back if we're not able to use it due to the pandemic then i feel more comfortable going forward i understand yeah because i go the same way why why take and um throw away money but um [Music] uh thank you lori i i i will get the information the boards requested if you want to if you want to defer on this and pull this from action tonight will that hurt us if we wait until the next meeting i honestly i honestly do not know tonight i will know tomorrow and i can communicate with the board you know well we do have um a special meeting monday night would we be able to if the deadline was such that all of a sudden we found out that we had to make a decision before the next schedule board meeting that we could make it monday night without the full information uh no we we we're going to be limited on time we've got to provide um at least uh 24 48 hours notice on what the agenda will be for the special meeting and that would be presuming that we have that information tomorrow um so um it would be tight it would be really tight but it's a possibility it's possible we can't add it on the agenda on monday if we don't have the information uh tomorrow we will not be able to add it on to the agenda for monday um so dr vanella uh just texted me he's been instrumental in contacting the cure arena he says we'll be fine until the next board meeting oh thank you so much dr vanilla so i appreciate that so thank you doc susanna yes i do have a follow-up question on um the force major clause so um i get that we can invoke forced major if if the state let's say declared you know state of emergency and no gatherings were allowed so we couldn't go there but if um that was not the case and if the arena was able to open but we chose not to i presume then we could not invoke force major in that case correct right which is a very good point um because if the state does allow indoor gatherings that large but we as a district felt it would not be in the best interest of the safety of our students staff and parents that would put us in a dicey situation correct yeah so dr vanell and his team have been actively working on options for graduation that we haven't fully shared with the board yet so um i i will i will talk with dr vanilla and we will we'll put together something to give the board some more information some more background and that might help provide more clarity before the next board meeting and we'll give you that information before the board meetings to have a chance to actually see it before the meeting um dr velesky i don't know if this is a question you can answer without speaking to dr vanella and his team but um had you considered and actually i want to give susannah credit for this idea because she had was talking to me about it earlier had you considered uh just planning on um a graduation on our football field the options dr bill and his team have put in that are putting into consideration right now okay it just uh susanna had said i'll just keep talking to you susanna i just want to give you credit though um uh it would help parents set parents expectations instead of leaving it to um not last minute but uh they would know far in advance whether or not it was going to be indoor outdoors so that would be good as you recall the challenge that that we all had for last school year was the distancing regulations and right right absolutely suzanna yes just one other yes thank you what just one other follow-up item uh for for uh dr vanilla perhaps to see if it's possible is um see if there's the option to negotiate a better um deposit and refund given the state of of of you know school districts booking this stuff i know from past calendar committee it is very hard you have to book more than a year in advance in order to secure the desired date so it's not that you can't get the date you you can't get a date you you will get a date that you don't want you know so maybe like two weeks after you know your last day of school but um i'm just wondering if if there is um an opportunity to negotiate something different than the standard deposit um requirements so let's just throw that on the table let's face it i i don't know how many uh graduation ceremonies they do a day but i know that they as you just mentioned suzanna they are book solid so we are not the only high school in the state facing this and having this very discussion um uh somebody just raised their hand yeah yeah no i all these comments are great and and i think if i understood it correctly dr velasquez that there seems to be some form of an exploratory committee uh with dr vanilla and pr and i would imagine others uh to a large degree so i guess my gut feeling is because we're putting the card a little bit before the horse not that far but i would like to hear what all of the options are on the table talking about fees ability and in fact there may be more opportunity to save i hear i do know that there's already insurance on the high school field so that would be one expense never exposed along with of course using one facility which is a large expense that we wouldn't be exposed to in budget so i'd like to see the the results of the exploratory before we're making decisions on something conclusive such as booking and paying insurance so that's what i hope the board supports at this point yeah and i i will i dr vanella is you know i'm i'm sure um ready to to uh kick that off i mean he's been working on this for uh some time with his high school team already uh in preparation for options so we'll prepare that for you and um you know and i i believe it would be appropriate to invite dr vanilla into that discussion when we have it with the board too because he has first-hand information uh leewoo so sorry i i forgot you had your hand up earlier yeah that's okay so uh it's a beginning i have similar concerns but after i read the first majority class there so that's easy in my mind so i want i just want to uh why not we have our other attorney to explain it how that class is going to protect us if the the best thing happened and we'll get our deposit back so matt would you please uh explain how it it's going to work to protect those so i i don't have the actual contract in front of me but i'll tell you generally what a force major clause is a force major is some intervening act that neither party has control over that renders the contract not not capable of being performed so for example if you were going to have a wedding on monday evening and you had the blizzard that we just had with three feet of snow that would be a force major that was something that was out of either party's control when they entered into and contemplated the contract what complicates this somewhat is that we're aware of the pandemic and the one thing that we we have very little control over is what the governor does in terms of if levels rise does he put greater restrictions et cetera so i think what we can do is look at the contract and see if we can a bolster the false force measure clause so that if there's some type of level where you can't have the students and their parents attend this graduation it would be a cancellation with full refund of the of the monies um you know but it's it's difficult to predict as we're sitting right now in february the fourth we don't know what the numbers are going to be in june of 2021 hopefully a lot better uh but i think i could look at the contract once we get go through this i can give some possible language changes that would better protect the board and give us a stronger ability to get out of this contract if it does not look like what you're into what basically what you're looking to do is have a graduation where the children and their families can attend and if it turns out they can only be children you're going to want to get out of that and that's something that we can look at and put in building the contract cure arena might not agree to it but at least something we can explore for you yes the agenda says should the current pandemic impede the safety the safe use of the facility it would be considered an act of god so mr jacoby so please help us to you know reveal that the first major class will provide us some uh safety uh mr hong as as you know if governor murphy declares that indoor gatherings come you know june are limited to no more than 25 people that would be an act of god um based on the pandemic that would then trigger this but i think we can we i can put something i'll review it and make my recommendations to best protect the board thank you yeah good discussion so bernie um we'll need a motion motion to table move by jeff second by barbara is there any discussion all those in favor aye motion carries this item will be tabled thank you jeff okay moving on to our human resources agenda there's one item on the agenda can i please have a motion for it by laurie second by jeff is there any discussion this is wrong full vote will the secretary please call the role mr carangelo yes this is true yes mr sismar yes mrs yes mr hong yes this is lex yes this is rhys yes mr winston yes president becker yes motion carries before i ask for a motion to combine items one two three on the student services agenda i want to ask if there's anything anyone would like separated out yes i'd like god number two separated okay okay then um can i have a motion for items one and three only glory second by mark this is any discussion sorry which mark seconded mark carangelo sorry mark two number two um any discussion on items one and three this is a roll call vote with the secretary please call the role mr carangelo yes this is true yes mr sismar yes this is gloss yes yes this this is rhys yes winston yes president becker yes motion carries can i have a motion for item two contract ultra athletic center second by barbara is there any discussion jeff yes discussion uh fire shooting clarity i know this seems to come up every year um and tell me exactly why again um we need to bring this offside i know it's for the safety and the floors i i think that's what has been discussed in the past in terms of the gymnastic is is this really a necessary expense at this time an action that we need to take um you know is it that much of a game changer i mean right now i do know that the cheer squad who are great are now cheering to the camera um i i noticed a lot of what they've done has been modified to some degree than what i've been seeing over the last years which i understand because i would imagine they can't get into these athletic centers or at least they're just beginning to get into them is this really something we need to be doing right now i think we need to ask ourselves again i go back to the very premise we had before tight budget i don't know what's going we're uh you know hanging on with baited breath of what the state's going to do in a couple of weeks i i just i i believe in it i love it i think we do need the gym rental for you know for this type of thing but is it really appropriate now is this something necessary let me explain it to you yes it's a terrific i'm sorry go ahead go ahead though it's a terrific question uh mr winston um what happens is we can't we do not have a nine panel floor the nine panel floor is what we go there for that's what they compete with so when they go to a competition normally it would be on a nine panel floor so we prepare them for the competitions with this nine panel tour now this year they won't be traveling to a competition um they will actually do a performance and it will be a virtual submission so they'll still be on the nine panel floor but it'll be virtually submitted instead of them going to the competition so they're still competing and it still makes a big difference uh when it comes to their preparation uh and especially you know this year when they're submitting something they want to be doing that on the nine panel floor and i guess it raises the same question that was raised last year is there anything we could be doing i i understood last year we were exploring the possibility of bringing the this equipment in-house on some type of portable basis uh it was brought up the prior year uh have we moved anywhere on that or is this just you know really an annual conversation but ultimately we rent out the center at this time it is an annual conversation the nine panel floor is extremely expensive and hard to put away so we would have to leave that floor out and we use those gyms for many other different activities which would ruin the floor if we were using him for the uh all the activities that we have so at this point with the space we have and what we you know what the resources we have um you know this does become now they usually uh have this year they'll have about 10 practices off-site that's what we're looking at how long is the practice i believe they're about an hour each okay so it's inconsequential so we're looking at we're really looking at under a thousand dollars an ultimate expense correct range um we have recently approved off-site venues for several other teams haven't we yes um bowling i think we just said swim um what jeff while you raise a good point um i feel that we need to be consistent and that if we are going to spend the money for off-site facilities for other teams uh at this time that we do it for all the teams we've been doing it for i think that i'm going to echo something you had said when there had been a discussion about um whether or not we should be spending money on artists and residents and you made a very eloquent speech that i really paid attention to about um how now more than ever it was so important for the kids to have the exposure to the arts and that's their niche um they need it now more than ever and i i bring it up because it really made an impression on me and i i feel the same way with this i feel that it's a passion for the members of each of these teams and that we should continue to be consistent and do the support that we can well you met you said my dad i just wanted to respond and i appreciate it and i do feel that way about the about the arts and bringing those folks in i think the bowling i i think bowling's important uh by the uh in the very respect that we don't have a bowling alley i i think uh swimming it's important for the fact that we don't have a swimming pool uh we certainly have ample space for certain things understandably i understand i understand the gymnastics aspect of the com of the competition so it's not for those reasons i would say the only reason i will support this is by merit of the fact that we're talking about an 800 budget when lou just gave me the hard line when i just see 80 an hour for how many hours you know what are we talking about but i i am going to remain fiscally conservative right now until we have more definitive uh i more definitive idea of what funding is going to look like uh because i would hate to approve it and then go back for a budget modification that would eliminate this and many of the other things that we're talking about in budget negotiation so with that i withdraw any objection but it is not for this not for the reason that it's of its necessity uh by the fact that the costs are in line um and and i can i'll stay on that thank you i'm sorry go ahead i'm sorry lori's had her hand up for a while victor well i just had a question which was going to be about um this but now it's about all the other sports there lori we're losing you you're breaking up laurie you're bringing me home hold on hold on hold on i'm turning off my camera is that better yes you're much better can you hear me yes okay sorry because you can't i get it um no my my question was just about um sanitization and cleanliness protocols when we're going off site because i know our people in-house i just want to make sure uh um when we go off site through all these different uh sports do we have any control over the cleanliness and the sanitization and and the social distancing and whatever needs to be done keep the kids safe how does that work for us we absolutely we absolutely have can you hear me laura um okay so for instance in this particular uh place that we're talking about for the cheerleading team they have temperature checks before practice hand sanitizers in the gymnasium shoes get sanitized um only one school is allowed in the gym at a time the spleen the spring floor that we need gets sanitized between each team uh obviously if the girls have to be together or some you know to do something then they're going to be together those are girls only and when they can be separated they will i know for instance at the uh the bowling alley for for example they're only using certain lanes and they're trying to keep everybody separated so um each each venue has uh their you know their sanity sanitizing and their uh preparation that they go through and we make sure that they're uh appropriate in each one we're overseeing that though that's my question we make sure that they have them and our coaches at each venue make sure that they're being followed making sure that they're being followed that's that's my only concern as they said because when we're in the house i feel comfortable i just wanted to make sure okay thank you was there some other um somebody else had their hand up heather um i just wanted to jump in with my thoughts here were um jeff and i actually share some very strong thoughts about women's sports and about mental health that we've both spoken about at different times throughout this past year and during the pandemic and i feel um an enormous drive to make sure that women's sports are taken care of as well as all of our other sports and i was um really impressed during the summer i had the opportunity to be at the high school several times to see our cheerleading squads outside dragging every bit of their equipment to the baseball field every morning and it is not a small amount of equipment that they were using just for the summer workouts and they brought it all out themselves every morning and all back in and i was unaware even knowing people that cheer and knowing parents that are involved i was unaware of just how many cheerleaders we have to compete and it is a huge and award-winning program so i'm happy we have the opportunity to support them as we do some of our much you know substantially large men's teams but the other part is i don't think we can put i mean price is always important but for 80 an hour and for what being able to participate in these things still means to our students in any way as far as mental health goes jeff and i have both talked about being concerned about what we're doing for the well-being of the students i think it's important to continue absolutely heather um that's that's the um what i was saying um not quite as articulate as you just uh put it earlier that for consistency's sake for the sake of the emotional social well-being of the kids to be able to provide these outlets for their passions for um the extracurriculars normalcy if you will is is just crucial right now so um and for the the men to all sports anyone else did i see anyone else so um we are taking a vote on this now bernie yes yes okay all those in favor aye opposed obscene motion carries good discussion everyone okay moving on to transportation services there is one item on the agenda can i please have a motion second by jeff is there any discussion all those in favor i had a question yes susannah yeah i just had a question about the effective date of october 6 2020.

so hopefully uh some of the information that will be shared with dr stone would address some of the um concerns from mr stern's letter uh sure so that being said uh before dr song gets into the code update again if there are any questions from the audience on the budget um the email is cps budget treasurer.k12.ct.us i'm not sure if we're actually checking the normal covet email box tonight uh we are so if you have an email there too we'll circle back to that as well again that's the unfortunately due to coven our remote meetings the best way for us to have audience participation is to send us questions via email so we look forward to seeing them again we'll check them again throughout the meeting that being said dr zolin you want to give us an update on covet 19 for cbs sure it'd be my pleasure um again if somebody could just give me a confirmation you can see the powerpoint slide okay great thank you um so you know important considerations as it relates to kovid this is um almost a year's worth of experience for us in in leadership during this pandemic now and this is not um straightforward obviously there's a number of considerations that we have to make at each developmental level to make decisions right for our students and community so we consider things like mitigation strategies and compliance mitigation strategy for example being mask wearing compliance simply meaning to what degree are we able to achieve that mitigation strategy and what we've seen across the district is tremendous compliance from our students and staff as it relates to proper mass squaring spacing in classrooms so you know at the elementary grades that means you know we we are inside of six feet apart the uh state guidance and indicates you know there is no exact number and we have not seen spread but they're all cohorted together for the day so you'll have 22 students of the same students all in the same room at the middle school as well at the high school because we switch classes kids are moving around more it's just a different consideration hallways obviously a bigger issue when you're talking about moving throughout the days and then dining areas that's really for us when we look at spacing the hotbed that we have to keep kind of sacrosanct and that's why you know we we brought in chespercott and vinn and i walked through with them in december and i'll explain why we did that in the summer now we of course we spend a lot of time with trespacot anyway they were evaluating our dining areas in august and september too but specifically in december looking at chs for the addition of more students so common area cleaning classroom cleaning i know those are things we've touched quite a bit about from a community perspective we monitor things like how many cases in cheshire per 100 000 people and then what's the positivity rate of those cheshire residents being tested because those are key factors the cdc has identified along with mitigation strategies that influence the risk of spread within schools there's an emerging uh variable that we're you know certainly paying attention to and that's vaccination rates you've probably heard that teachers aren't yet um in the queue necessarily to be vaccinated or aren't currently being vaccinated per the state the exception to that is when there are surplus vaccinations so if um for example today at the cheshire town pool it was a scheduled second vaccination day so for people 75 years of older older or emergency services personnel you could come and get your second vaccination today well it turns out a number of people already got it someplace else so there were extras and we need to call somebody quick it just so happens that being right in town it makes it easier for us to get people there in a hurry and um maura esposito and her team have been great about reaching out to us um to address that so the more vaccinations become available to our staff for example by the time dodd might go to dc and may four months from now that could be a consideration obviously um school spread again i just reiterate that that's not really been uh an issue for us thankfully and it's because we've successfully navigated all these other items up here so i just want to take you back only a few weeks in time this is the center for disease control considerations for uh risk it says this says higher risk of transmission in schools highest risk of transmission and they look at the three variables i mentioned the number of new cases per 000 persons within the last 14 days so on january 14th that number was 53.9 um cases per 100 000 in cheshire that's where we were peaking out the highest risk of transmission um the positivity percent positivity rate over the 14-day window also our peak on on january 14th and that's you know up near the higher risk of transmission eight being the threshold for that our mitigation strategies nevertheless have always sustained themselves at really strong levels because we do you know maintain quality social distancing um but really the mask and hygienic part is the stuff that we are we mastered um and we need to continue to stay with that obviously for our kids this is today's the state releases the data every thursday so you can see from last you know january 14th to today the remote learners we always provide per state guidance the option for families to go remote there are also calculated in this number uh families and students unfortunately that are quarantined and have to be remote um so you can see even with our quarantine population across the district were roughly 25 chs at 26 27 percent um dodd is our highest area but as of january 27th but i i understand that more recently it's trending back toward more in person now bigger kids um you have to have different considerations there same as like our kindergarten classes it's not easy to ask a seven-year-old to sit in their seat for the day six feet apart from their peers it's really not not doable um and it would be torturous if if we were to try and institute that so it's a consideration we have to make and then that whack-a-mole sort of um you know example that i was providing so what are our schedules look like at the elementary middle school we are in five days a week full day from the beginning of the year we've missed one day of in-person instruction um due to a last-minute uh late night call i think i was actually in a meeting when when vin called me um and we had to close highland for the day back in september at cheshire high school we have three groups we have the monday thursday in person the other three days a remote is one group tuesday friday in person the other three days are remote group and we have a growing group three that's kids that are attending cheshire high more than two days in person we've been gradually adding to that group um for a while now um so we have 91 students that are four days a week 15 students that are five days a week and three that are three days a week at cheshire high we've only missed two days and i think you remember the cafeteria issue we had when all of our cafeteria staff are out it's hard to make lunch and but we figured it out in two days uh cheshire high school moving forward what are our plans there are 13 of 15 derby high schools that actually south windsor who surveyed but shared the data with us that are in a hybrid schedule like cheshire high school the two who aren't are smaller than highland elementary school ca chs has been systematically adding students since the turning of the year with the blessing of chesapeake that's why we met with them in december so we have 109 students now who go more than two days a week 22 of those students were added this past monday um so we we have been systematically adding them dr gad when i talked to her wednesday committed to we need to survey now all of our families who aren't already in that four day a week scenario to determine if they would like to add more days um that's not a guarantee that it'll be available but we need to know the numbers to start to actively continue to move forward and you know we've decided educationally that it's most in our students benefit to retain that remote wednesday for all students so that our students can come together in the same modality uh remote they're all together as a group in the same modality our teachers um are able to do different groups they do break out groups with each other and can connect as well as run we run our wellness wednesdays through our physical education uh department to work on overall well-being i mean there's there's this is a much different situation i can't imagine being a high schooler during this time and it it's not what we want for kids to be home obviously you know i don't love my own high school kid being home um but in when you try and navigate the variety of uh demands to make sure that our kids are safe and continuing education this is our current situation now i want to reiterate bringing back students when we had highest risk of transmission would be reckless if not stupid so we didn't do it then we are in the process of bringing back students here now and so that is where we are at the moment i am grateful for the incredible amount of energy that all of our uh high school staff the one thing i i appreciate is that i the the you know correspondence which is great to have correspondents and people share their perspective didn't indicate that you know academics were a failure that that was abysmal you know our team is doing everything they can to make sure our students have access to the fundamental learning that they need to be successful and this isn't a cheshire public schools it's not a cheshire high school problem this is a global problem um and so you know i think we are all working really hard to try and continue to bring more students back we look forward to continuing to bring more students back ben and i have already started planning out our you know what does our warm weather uh protocol look like again getting the tents back um it makes it easier to bring more kids back when i can have them eating outside um and it just interests the lunch is the biggest problem because you have masks off dining six even six feet of part or less i mean for adult-sized people at the high school is a concern so you know that's kind of where we are today and the progress you know we're making in and moving forward i know you know mary takes that very personally um as do i and everybody who works in the cheshire public schools to make sure that we're doing the best we can for our our students not that some people may disagree with whether or not they think that's the best way but that's why this forum exists to be able to have that conversation so that's my update certainly you're happy to answer any questions uh i had one uh it was a cheshire high school so it seems to me like the since beginning uh since new year's i i in the last few weeks as a parent my daughter's junior at transfer high school again almost daily uh and mary's very good at communication on the cases and as they come up but just this week alone i just did a tally of emails through today and see that there were nine new cases this week gesture high school there was uh how many tony nine if i come out monday tuesday wednesday and thursday's emails talk about number of cases um i i got nine last week was similar is this now we're way past i think large gatherings from new year you know that more great lengths last fall and early winter that those were the culprits for a lot of things we see in town essentially adults log gatherings here we are in february as curious is it more the same or are the cases at the high school i know it's hard to say if they're driven internally from other students probably not but it's still a case where we're seeing the ramifications from outside you know large group gathering not wearing masks or is it something else or can we really pinpoint what's driving the latest and honestly i'm not sure if this week's numbers are that far off from from january but it just seems daily now we're getting tuesday from there you know it's a a great question um and i'll boil it down to a couple of different succinct questions that uh is is cheshire high school experiencing a flare i think is one question and it uh you know another is do we understand the source of of the cases and so the question about the flare or the answer i guess to that question is kind of um and you know is somebody who spends every single work day um checking our data we have a a pretty comprehensive uh gathering of spreadsheets that identify the number of cases by building and when the person went on quarantine and offer became positive and no longer positive and all that data is tracked if you go to our home page and click on the covid19 current cps uh covid data it's updated here every single school day so tony's absolutely right that we have like right now we have seven positive cases at cheshire high students um i think you know it's less than six we don't identify the number but i will say you know more often than not when you see the less than six it's a real small number um but right now we have seven positive students and you know sometimes those occur in families where an individual may have one or two siblings attending chs and what happens is you know they all tend to become positive at one point and if they're not all tested we still count you as positive um the other thing that uh and they do it ebbs and flows so if you look at highland at one point highland i was getting a call from scott jeffrey seemingly every day so the point my wife would say is that scott when the phone rings and you look now it's it's way down we only have six students quarantined there were a typical day would be like at highland um so right now and it it runs through like i said it i don't know why um but it does pop off in areas uh almost it doesn't make sense you know like right now norton has experienced their first little bit um darcy is in a little pop as well um but they they will come back uh down to manageable levels almost always and when you see the the data that i was just showing you about community spread that's a tremendous indicator that things are moving in the right direction of course the other variable that i guess i didn't include on the considerations are the variants the uk variant being um having much higher rate of spread and so that's a consideration for us but right now i mean the thing that is counteracting to a certain degree is adults in the community having access to the vaccine so you have to measure all these different variables and proceed judiciously to make sure we're doing okay at the high school level again i i don't see it being anything where like kids are throwing a monster party and everybody got sick that's not what happened that's not why our numbers are the way they are that being said it's a constant concern [Music] for kids and adults in our community particularly when they're outside of school not in school but outside of school gatherings letting their guard down hanging out with your friends you know well so and so is my neighbor you're all right you know well you don't know and that's why we have to remain vigilant with the masks and we reinforce that with our students all the time i did a video for our students not that long ago impressing upon them proms you know athletics these are things we want to be able to participate in uh certainly the drama you know so be smart outside of school that's that's the big message for our community thank you any comments or questions from the board members of faith yeah um hey jeff i thank you for that overview and i think it needs to be heard frequently um you know i think we've got a lot to be proud of in the district um we've certainly put in good mitigation strategies that have have kept our numbers low which is great and we've also been able to keep through the you know keep up in those k-8 schools which equally wonderful and um you know administration on down to the ias all need to be commended for what they're doing um you know whether or not we agree with a cheshire high school parent letter is irrelevant uh we've gotten a number of letters that we have read in full that have praised your effort everyone's efforts at the high school and and they should be read just as those letters that are critical need to be read these guys are frustrated i get it um it's been since march it's been a year you know even if it's a look guys we're probably in this to the end of the year and i'm not saying that but they i think they just need something more than it's coming um you know if there's something more concrete but but you know i don't you know what you're doing you're the superintendent all i'm saying is we have got to be able to listen with discernment to those folks who are as frustrated as the people on the other side are encouraged that's all i have to say yeah thank you that's why i said i mean that's why this forum exists to be able to hear all those perspectives thank you faith uh adam had his hand up first and tim um firstly jeff thank you for that uh fantastic report um it was a really great update and uh and i guess sort of a a time a timely update considering uh the letter that we just received um and you know uh to piggyback on what faith said about you know commending all of our staff and our students but also the community at large i think we said this uh several meetings ago that you know any kind of future success that our children are going to have and to be being able to open up the school especially the high school even further is that that the community has to come together and and follow all of the guidelines so that we can get that um infection rate down which seems to be what's happening and in turn you are responding by uh attempting to open up the the high school further and that we continue to have success in that uh k through eight uh that they've been open all this time which is incredible and i think even our last meeting um when we were speaking with robin um our concerns about the high school being you know in hybrid mode for so long and what that is going to look like for next year so it's not like we've turned a blind eye uh to the hybrid model or or how our students are being affected by it uh we're certainly uh deal with uh parent concerns every day and we certainly can communicate with you on a regular basis um voicing our concerns and and and hoping that we can have a uh you know a gradual successful reopen hopefully this year and certainly uh for next year so thank you again for all your work i think yeah uh tim europe and then andrew thanks tony yeah jeff uh so thank you for thank you for all that explanation i agree with you just today i heard dyna you know one anecdote about one of the high school students who's in quarantine now and you know we're going to let down our guard a little bit want to see friends now in quarantine not positive but in quarantine because somebody else had it and passed along um so yeah no i i do think that that is uh indic your explanation made a lot of sense it resonated with me and i think it is what's happening just people putting down their guard i look at this three percent i think we're down in the three percent range now and i just wonder are people gonna let down their guard well the vaccine's out we're down to three percent but we're still in the middle of what used to be flu season maybe now it's coveted season would you mention that which at a certain point this i mean assuming it's similar to what happened last year and these and the infection rates go down i'm hopeful that you know say may june these rates are dropping naturally because of environmental reasons when is the when is the dodd trip tentatively scheduled for the dc trip uh i was may 26th may 26th okay so out near memorial day so i i don't think it's i think it i agree i agree with adam stern i think it makes a lot of sense for the for mike woods to be thinking about that seriously this year is incredibly tough and i know i look forward to dc trip what 30 40 years no not 40 years ago 30 years ago so um yeah i think that's great but i do think that the time frame definitely matters i'm assuming that's part of his consideration in the planning oh yeah i mean as well as we talked about testing before the trip isolate testing multiple tests before the trip isolation and then and that's in may assuming that you know vaccinations have a real positive impact um there is the other uh consideration of what the climate is in dc at that time um what the interstate travel bans or lack thereof may be at that time and you know i know mary's worked um the same to make sure that we have junior and senior prom like nobody can guarantee that we'll have any of those events but we're certainly trying like heck to you know make it a little bit more normal if we can yeah and just the last point is that as i know you'll recall jeff uh i certainly was very concerned about fall sports happening particularly not not all the fall sports but some of the higher contact ones like soccer um and you disagreed with me and you were right and i was wrong i mean as far as i know all the data you said i'm just being blunt about it i i i'm not a public health professional um and i'm trusting your judgment that the decisions you're making in conjunction with chespercott and the other uh area officials are the right ones i don't like it at all it's not your fault i think the teachers are generally doing a a great job but i i stand behind you in the decisions that you're making as as much as i don't like them i don't think you like a lot of the decisions keeping kids hybrid but um and you are pushing forward like you said so thank you for that in turn pushing forward in terms of getting more kids into the high school three four days a week so thank you sure thank you thanks tim uh andrew thank you tony um so i just wanna i have to say this there was not one person that wanted to keep the kids in the schools more than superintendent stolen did from day one when in march when everything fell apart and no one everyone was going districts were closing across the state we worked and this isn't a pat on the back or a high five to the superintendent this is this is based on fact this is based on action and what happened was is that we did everything possible to keep our kids in school as much as possible the elementary school is the fact that we've missed a few a handful of days since the beginning of the school year and that cheshire high school if we had another another 100 000 square feet of cheshire high school this wouldn't even be a discussion because those kids would be in school every single day say i spoke to a mother whose kid goes to hill house and then another whose child goes to crosby high school those kids have not been in school since november of 2020.
