[Music] let's just wait until after all welcome back to gtv's coverage of ihsa basketball we're live here from greensburg high school sorry for the technical difficulties earlier jason simpson joined here by grant peters getting ready to tip off between the jacksondale eagles and the greensburg pirates greensburg comes in with a 12-2 record while jackson dell sits at 12 and 5. grant what can we expect here today between the eagles and the pirates well as we have the opening tip off here i think the pirates are gonna try to exploit exploit you know some matchups that that could potentially happen with jackson dell here in the first possession they're running some some five out motion trying to step in here with brendan and i think as the early as the game progresses on here in the early phases they're gonna have to just check each other out and see what opportunities present itself starters for jackson dell today we have a 6-2 junior number 10 wyatt day 6'5 senior number 20 cameron gayle 6-1 senior number 30 will neal 6-3 junior number 40 caleb simon and a six-foot senior number 50 landon turner our pirates go with their core five 6-3 junior number 12 colin cummer 6-2 sophomore number 14 kai dyer 6-3 senior number 20 lane sparks then a pair of 6'3 juniors number 32 brendan stanley and 34.

dakota walters minute into the game now pirates trail two to nothing as cummer surveys the defense gets into the middle of the lane his pass is tipped away gonna be controlled by the pirates i will share coach simpson as we've had these technical difficulties we're trying to get the new link for those that want to tune in on the stream we're also on our local etc channel that has been put out on our high school twitter account and we're trying to get this broadcast to everybody that's comers first three-point attempt of the day is no good cool going to be tracked down by jackson dell dave's going to push himself he's on the left wing his shot attempt is up and no good kept alive by day corralled by simon kicks back out today swings over to gail his three-point attempt is no good offensive rebound attempt put back up and no good finally rebounded there by brendan stanley nice job there at jackson dale getting multiple attempts at the rim i think the pirates are fortunate there after giving up some offensive rebounds that brendan stanley was able to wrestle the ball away and still get a foul on jackson dell and grant i think this is something here you know the pirates come in with an exceptional record of 12 and two but in their past if you take out the southridge game in their past six games the pirates have been their usual selves on the offensive end but they're still trying to really find that identity defensively as cummer brings it back across the timeline he's going to kick on the right to dyer to stanley who has it tipped away on the wing to cummer for three it's no good offensive rebound there by walters nice job of dakota to get the pirates another one dyer's three-point attempt is up it's no good kept alive again on the play by stanley even though it was tipped by jackson dale going to be called out of bounds on the pirates and grant we've got the officials having a conference you know what comes out of a conference between officials um i don't want to go there nothing good um normally you know what normally i just i just believe it's good i'll just leave it there i was gonna make uh so the call will stay jackson dale's ball yeah nothing good for the pirates here as as the eagles retain possession neal swings out top to gale over today dave back to neal surveys the baseline he kicks down in the corner back out to gail his three-point attempt is no good rebound on the play by sparks who's going to push in transition kicks to the wing to cummer who kicks in the corner to walters his three-point attempt is up and good pirates lead three to two that's a quality shot as cummer had the dribble drive and found walters in the corner his shoulders were square and he shot it with confidence neal controls he kicks on the wing today over to gail to back today guarded on the play here by sparks in there as simon puts it in for the and one reach in foul going to be called on stanley you know we're not incredibly familiar with jackson dell but i will tell you a move like that by number 40 from jackson dell that took a lot of skill and took a lot of toughness and i think he's going to present a problem throughout the game here if that's how he continues to play well you see three very familiar names in the jackson dell lineup from both the boys and girls sides of things you have day gale and simon uh day and simon both had sisters who were top level players in their girls program and then gail i'm just assuming that it's it's brother but gail has had a couple of brothers who were tremendous tremendous players on the boys sides of things all of those former players that we mentioned were part of state championship team so definitely in the bloodline here stanley on the steal he's going to take it to the rack not able to finish on the play but he will be fouled and go to the line for two looking to tie the scores of pirates trail five to three halfway through the first quarter the grant jackson dale comes in at 12-5 they're under first-year man clint bowman and as we went through their starters it's a mix of juniors and seniors what are some of the i guess advantages and disadvantages you would have as a because this is obviously his first time as a coach it's his first head coaching job what are some of the advantages and also disadvantages that you would run into coming into such a veteran ball club yeah i think the the players would uh you could presume that they have some basketball iq that they bring they have some leadership they have some obviously experience throw it down big man sparks goes in for the two-hand slam but also i think if if these kids had some poor habits or something that doesn't match up with coach bowman's system that could be hard to coach away so there are positives and negatives um at a record of 12 and five it looks like that coach bowman has been managing that well so um i think the leadership will trump a lot when you have that that uh that that leadership and that tone in your locker room good movement here by the pirates as dyer looks to dive inside his shot attempts gonna be blocked pushed up the floor tipped away by stanley gonna be knocked out of bounds there by simon possession goes to the pirates jackson dell is concerned about that last no call coach and worked out for the pirates as they now walk the ball up on offense that was uh number 50 landon turner on that drive pirates run a little tiger action they get it into stanley his attempt is blocked gonna be tipped out of bounds belongs to the eagles did you drop a landon turner reference i did yeah blast from the past for those hoosier fans absolutely one of the all-time greats gail drives gets to the rim he ties it at seven nice move nice move and good adjustment and had the soft finish 2 30 to go here we're still knotted up at seven as cummer drives he's going to go to the line for the old-fashioned three-point play nice job there colin getting to the rim and finishing through the contact you know cummer there showed an ability to be rugged and take the contact and be strong with the basketball and yet lay it in colin eyes his free-throw attempt it's up and good pushes the pirate lead to three ten to seven here 10 28 two i'm sorry 2 28 to go in the first quarter a little full court pressure being applied here by the pirates forces jackson dale to call a timeout nice little change of pace there by the pirates you don't normally equate full court pressure with them but a good job of changing the tempo a little bit that appeared to be a zone press where they're trying to trap and i i think if we typically when we do press it has more of a man-to-man feel so that zone press i think was really something that jacksondale's not seen from greensburg in the past you know that's something as a coach you throw out there especially if it hasn't been in film and things for for somebody to see you throw it out there you've been working on it a couple of days in practice hey let's throw it out in live action and see what we get and if nothing else even though you didn't create a turn over there you did cause them to have to burn an early timeout that maybe they weren't looking to use and here they go right back away from it and just go back into half court man good motion being run here by jackson dale i was getting ready to start on the wings today dave's three-point attempt is no good tipped up and in there very nicely done that's by sophomore 34 matt dickman just subbed into the game i was going to say the exact same thing the pace of jacksonville's offensive possession led to a good look and then also the offensive rebound walters able to get to the rack just not able to finish 10-9 now pirates still lead by one as day brings it across gives off to hughes hughes back today day working against dyer on the left wing kicks across the floor to simon simon's three-point attempt is up and good 12-9 now jackson dell with the lead as we approach one minute remaining here in the first quarter sparks kicks to the left wing to cummer gets to the rim his layup attempt is no good kept alive there by stanley nicely kicked over to sparks lane's three-point attempt is up and good pirates retake the lead 13 to 12.

that's a prime example of how a 50 50 ball when you don't win that battle it usually leads to good things for the team that gets to it difficult play but championship teams make that kind of play nice hard take there by simon who's able to finish at the rim puts the eagles back into the lead 14-13 first sub of the day here for the pirates as addison barnes pettit will see his first action 32.8 seconds to go jackson dale with a 14 to 13 lead addison barnes pettit being in our close to 18th game of the season here he's got a job experience um i think that we'll see if addison can be a spark off the bench and i know we've talked about it in previous broadcasts before all addison does when he comes in is his role he doesn't ever try to do more than he's asked to do fills that role very well as day's three-point attempt is no good pirates are going to go one for low action for the last shot of the quarter lane goes to work he pulls up from about 15.

it's no good kept alive there by walters [Music] that brings us to the end of the first quarter pirates lead 15 to 14. you usually throw this question to me at the quarter break but i'm gonna i'm gonna trick you here coach you know jackson dallas showed up to play today and when you realize that their pace is good and they're very capable with some scores what do you think coach meyer is saying in the huddle right now well i think it's the same thing that we kind of touched on there early in the broadcast you can watch this game and we still don't know what the defensive identity of this team is you know i i thought offensively we had good pace took good looks got to finish a little better at the rim but hey at least you've solved problem number one you're getting to the rim now take that next step and finish but on the on the defensive end of things we are allowing jackson dale to get into the teeth of our defense way too easily giving up far too many offensive rebounds and then um you know the looks they're getting on the perimeter right now are from guys that that they want to shoot it and they've only knocked one down to this point but that's something you know you've got to make sure you're out contesting shooters and you can't take the defensive end of the floor for granted yeah i think you made a good point there it can sound if it's worded in a certain way it can sound very cliche-ish but i think it starts on the defensive end for the pirates finishing possessions getting rebounds and then pushing in transition i think will be a catalyst to make a difference in this game and i would say jackson dell has to feel fortunate where they're at because number 10 wyatt day is one of their leading scorers and to my knowledge he didn't make a basket there in the first quarter and they only trailed by one as the pirates come down transition stolen away by jacksondell nice job of them to get that possession back as day looks to attack he gets the 15 kicks on the wing to hughes his three-point attempt is no good out of bounds off of the pirates jackson dell will retain possession you know i i as i led into your question at the quarter break i talked about jackson dale's pace there's no question that they they are putting out a lot of effort a lot of intensity here and this is going to be one of those games as lou holtz used to say you better pack a lunch because they're going to be here all day and you can tell in the early going to this that jackson dell's going nowhere and it's interesting you say that because people who have been around this area long enough and seen enough basketball know that you're gonna get very similar things from both jackson dell and south ripley two teams that are on greensburg's schedule those are two schools who have a long rich tradition of of quality basketball for for schools their size and it doesn't matter year to year what their talent level is they're never going to come in and just roll over and die and be a walk over victory even though you might look in certain years and you win by 30 or 40 points it still wasn't easy as silly as that sounds they're two schools that like we said they take a lot of pride in their basketball and they they play the game the right way and like the the old cliche as lou holtz would say you are going to have to pack a lunch it's going to be work if you want to come away victorious against jackson dell i i agree completely with that and i think this game we're not only gonna have to you know bring our lunch pails so to speak but we're also going to bring execution of the game plan that coach meyers laid out this is this is going to be a test and we're going to have to see how this unfolds throughout the next three quarters 6 34 to go here pirates lead 17 14.

brett stringer making his first appearance in the lineup for the pirates enter to sparks lane gets into the lane it's going to be blocked over again by jackson dylan turned right back over by the pirates day's layup attempt is no good barnes pettit kicks up the floor to sparks laying over to stringer on the wing to cummer colin kicks out to stanley brynden's three-point attempt is no good rebounded there on the play by turner and i think that uh grant i think you found your new favorite player and unfortunately he's not wearing pirate blue today number 50 mr turner has a very strong hair game today and you were definitely singing his praises before this game started yeah you can tell you could tell he takes a lot of pride in it and i am admiring it here from the from the booth um and not to mention he's also playing a nice game today he's trying to deny sparks and here he is matched up so he's not only looking good but playing good isn't that the old adage if you look good you play again that's golf that's that's golf man you go to the first tee if you look good you're gonna nice spin move back in the lane just unable to finish there great job elaine to keep it alive just fumbles it out of his reach possession goes back to jackson dell 509 to go here in the first half pirates still leads 17 to 14.

kind of things have gotten a little sloppy here to start this second quarter both teams it didn't fro it isn't sloppiness from a lack of effort just looks like that ball might be square right now for some reason yeah and i it's true for both teams that see which team can settle in and have a poised possession to get to get rewarded with a good bucket they step down the end line another turnover there against jackson dell now it's greensburg's turn let's see if they can go possession without a turnover yeah i mean with the way this has been played here this first half of the second quarter if one team could have made a couple of shots they feel like they've had a big lead kai dyer who just entered back into the game swings to walters walters out top back to dyer looking inside the stanley kicks over to cummer colin into the lane gonna be stolen away i need to keep my mouth shut because i'm just a jinx greensburg there on that possession another turn up hex on him i know neal drives in he gets to about 10 feet it's good good touch brings the eagles back to within one nice job in transition there the pirates dakota walters does exactly what you want your four to do in transition and run straight to the rim nice find by lane pushes that lead back out to three for the pirates we're halfway through the second quarter we've talked about brendan stanley and dakota walters value on this team and dakota walters brings what you can't coach he brings he brings length and enough athleticism that he can finish at the rim like that he we've seen him knock down threes and we also see him contest for rebounds and that that length you cannot coach it you just cannot coach it another great job there the pirates getting out quickly in transition earns colin a trip to the line for two his first one is up and good pirates biggest lead of the game now they lead by four 20 to 16 3 47 to go in the first half colin eyes this second one is no good but nice job elaine there on the rebound puts it back up and in 22-16 now pirates with a six-point advantage day hands it off to turner back today he's going to drive that right baseline it's up and no good well actually i don't know if that was a pass or if it was tipped away but whatever the case dickman is able to grab that loose ball and he will be fouled and go to the line for two i'm i'm getting challenged through text message about making any kind of reference here i'm going to give a shout out to dave alexander who's tuning into the broadcast so uh he knows what it is to wear pirate blue and shout out to you big fella there's one thing that can definitely be said about coach alexander there was never a jump shot that he met that he didn't like and wouldn't take you know what most the time he'd make it as lane does a phenomenal job slicing through the jackson dell defense getting to the rim pushing that pirate lead to seven they're going to be called against number 30 will neal are the eagles as the pirates look to extend this seven-point lead and that's a good segue the pirates have been able despite the sloppy play to extend this to a seven point lead i think this possession is really important you can ex you can extend it even further or you know get the jacksonville eagles a chance to get right back in and right on cue walters makes the three it results in a timeout for jackson dell a big possession big bucket at this time in the game talk a little bit that last shot was set up by brett stringer talk a little bit about what the importance is of kids like brett to a team because everything that he does on the floor 99 of the time will never show up in the scorebook after the game but talk about how important kids like that are well as as you know as you coach it's it's necessary for championship basketball you can have you can have a great team of individuals and they're going to win some games but when you want to win championships tournament play where teams scout you you got to have kids that are willing to drive and kick or hustle for a loose ball or create deflections or guard a difficult assignment battle those sorts of things i had an old coach that used to call moxie place they don't show up but yet they're important to winning games and playing championship basketball as i said before so i'm good on brett stringer there he's that kind of kid it shows in the classroom too as you know as he walks our hallways in the building absolutely pirates do a great job pushing a transition again lane gets to 10 feet his fade away jumper is good 29 to 17 now as lane sparks has decided gentlemen enough is enough i'm taking over yeah i was a little extra saucy there so he he was able to create separation not only by the dribble drive but to fade away a little bit and finish another offensive rebound here by jackson dale short corner jumper there by simon is good brings the eagles back to within 10.

29-19 just under two minutes to go here in the first half we talked about this earlier jackson dell has some nice pieces they have different different kids with different skill sets and they all battle and there's a follow on the hustle with the rebound and two offensive rebounds technically there but like they have some nice pieces that complement each other and they trim the lead to eight and we told you they're not going anywhere they're in it walters for another corner three it's up and good i tell you i think dakota has found a spot on the floor he likes pushes the pirate lead to 32-21 that's dakota's third three of the first half somebody may want to get a hand up on him maybe nice job there colin cummer deflects that one away turnover jacksondale 106 to go here pirates lead by 11. hey when you have possessions like this coach do you think coach meyer is going to call a set are we just going to run continue to run motion here or i think he's going to stand out here and hold it or they're going to go 41 to a lay-up try to get a good one now as sparks gets into the lane and scores 34-21 pirates with the 13-point advantage i don't think you're gonna get a higher uh percentage shot than what we just got on that possession not not that i would ever say coach meyer has been spoiled but i'm gonna say coach meyer has been spoiled you've got number 20 in white out there right now you just graduated andrew wellage you had a little guy by the name of brian mcintosh who you know for the last what do we say eight or nine years when you get to end o'clock situations like this you don't have to worry about a special set or anything like that you just say get them the basketball and they are so skilled that you know you're going to get a great look at the end of the clock in about every single situation and there's a lot of teams that do have to run specific sets to get those looks yeah i i would go one step further too as we're getting here in february and closing down the season those type of players are invaluable because when you're in crunch time and you have to have a bucket you don't have to work so hard as a team to get it you have to have a magic set or you don't have to get the ball to go to a certain spot on the floor you just got to get it to that player so that's a big deal when you get in tournament time and you try to close out games dakota walters at the line here foul was called there jackson dale trying to blow through a screen dakota both free throw attempts are good 36-23 here jackson dale going gonna try to get one last heave off at the basket it's no good that's the end of the first half our pirates lead 36 to 23.

we're gonna step away here for one [Music] minute [Music] so [Music] so [Music] all right welcome back everybody we're joined here at halftime by two very special young ladies two ladies that i have the privilege of coaching each year each year well i guess one of them each year one of them for the first time we have freshman janae cummer and sophomore jenna foster joining us here at halftime ladies unfortunately we didn't get to uh get together this morning and and have our next walk through in preparation for a sectional championship game lost our semi-final last night to rushville and actually what was a very well played game not not something that you like to hear after you lose but just an indiana high school basketball game that was well played on both sides they just happened to be the better team last night with with the two of you jenna even you as a sophomore this was both of your first experiences as ver true varsity basketball players so jenna will start with you since you were around the program and around varsity basketball for a year what would you say was the biggest adjustment that you had to make coming into this season and becoming a full-time varsity player for the first time just like scouting a lot was so different and just preparing so much more and getting ready for games and especially who i was going to guard last night with marlo being someone that had played varsity all three years and just preparing myself for what i had to do and i knew the role that i had to play and just preparing myself for that talk about that a little bit you obviously you two know that that a lot of preparation goes into what we do each and every day going through scouting reports and going through film and knowing knowing those things how does it help you on game nights it just lets you know what to expect and especially with marlo i knew that she wanted to shoot that step back jump shot and i let it get to me right before half time and she hit that three and like from then on i knew like i have to guard this better all right janae i guess the same question would be for you here but in a little different way because you're stepping right into the varsity level from the eighth grade level and so you know huge differences between playing junior high and then and then playing at the varsity level what were a couple of things that that were eye-opening for you but then a couple of things that you're like this isn't as different as maybe i thought it would be um i feel like the pace of the game was so much faster and everything was so much faster and everyone was so much stronger especially coming in a smaller freshman it was a lot harder to compete against stronger players and but some things were the same like ball movement i knew would always had to be really good for our offense and everything and i think that's through all levels the good ball movement is really important well i will say that um i know at times that as your coach i don't do a good enough job bragging on you guys in the moment because my head is always you know in fast forward we got to get ready for the next opponent we got to get better but i i have to brag on you two because to see the growth that you two had through the season was phenomenal you know um we're still trying to figure out why janae won't shoot it as much as she needs to because she is an excellent shooter but um and jenna you kind of mentioned it yourself you knew you had a role to play and there were times this season early where you might get away from some of the things that make you successful but then you really settled into that role and you know i was i was talking to mr peters and i don't remember turnovers at the end of the season you became one of our best defenders um so both of you kind of talk about what it's like to come in and know as a freshman and know as a first year varsity player that there's going to be a specific role that you have to play and you know maybe in junior high you're one of the top scorers or whatever it was so so what's it like coming in and just having to fill a certain position a certain role um at first this year especially it was pretty scary knowing the history of the program and the team that we had last year and i felt like i really needed to fill just a huge role but the support of the team and especially our seniors really helped and they helped me through a lot of that stuff and getting past the word how worried i was at the beginning janae same question to you definitely in eighth grade i people were looking for me to take that last shot and i knew coming in like that's not my role anymore and i was just ready to give give what i could to our team and become successful as a team well we know that we lost five very important seniors to our program who who brought so much of the success that we've been fortunate enough to have and so you know you you flip the script to next season and you guys will be wiley veterans we won't have any seniors in the program we'll have juniors and sophomores and freshmen so granted we're still months and months away from that and a lot of things are going to happen between now and then but as we sit today what what do you guys feel how do you feel your roles might change next season and then how do you think that they might still say stay the same in a way i feel like we lost a lot of our scores and that maybe next year i'm gonna have to be looked at more to score but i know that still next year i'm gonna have to just be locked in defensively and have to guard and chase whenever we need someone to i think we're definitely going to have to be leaders for our freshmen incoming freshmen they they are a really good group of basketball players and you know just making that transition easier for them is going to be really important well in looking looking at the success that you guys were able to come in and have and i told you all all through the season that it really wasn't fair to you guys but it was like this for everybody you guys didn't get to experience a summer of being together and getting better and kind of understanding things we were learning on the fly as the season went on so you know the way things are looking now we should get to have a normal summer and thing so if those things happen what what do you guys hope for and what do you look for to be some of your maybe individual goals but especially our team goals next year knowing how inexperienced we could be i really want to get stronger offensively because this year i know that i wasn't much of an offensive threat so i want to really work on that and work on my ball handling and being stronger with the ball and i feel like especially since i'm going to be a junior on the team with no seniors i'm really going to have to step up into that leadership role i definitely want to improve on my defense and offensively too you know i'd like to mean offensively you're going to shoot it yes that would be good but i'd like to pick up my defense for sure because i know that is super important to everything okay now now it's time for honesty question was there and especially for you janae because it was the first time that you experienced it were there any times this year that um coach simpson brought out the coach voice that you may have gotten a little concerned um yes for sure it was a very scary experience scary experience when the coach voice comes out but we know what he he means well yeah i agree but especially after south dearborn you got on me and then we played rushville the next game and it really gave me the push i needed to be able to know my job and what i had go go ahead janae go ahead the first time we played rushville halftime he said we we were losing because my defense cousin couldn't do it by the end of the game he said these second half freshmen really pulled it out see and i think that's what people fail to realize and at times when coach voice comes out you've got two choices you can crumble into a heap and be done with it or you understand why coach voice comes out i would never ask you guys to do something you're not capable of and sometimes you just need to refocus and things and i give you guys kudos for that all year really looking forward to being able to coach you for the next two and three years i think that there's still a lot of special basketball ahead of us and um you know hopefully this is something that even though we're not happy today that there's happier times ahead because i i think there's a lot of success in our future and know that you guys are going to be a big part of it thank you thank you all right thanks guys that was greensburg girls basketball players sophomore jenna foster and freshman janae cummer as we're back here to second half action pirates have pushed the lead out to 40 to 25 5 38 to go here as jackson dell will take it out under their own basket coach peters you'd never know it but those two came up here and were nervous wrecks and were maybe some of the best player interviews we've ever had actually willing to talk did a great job as day gets his first three-point attempt at the day to go down bringing jackson dell back to within 12 40 to 28.

you know as i take the microphone back over we're definitely downgrading uh because those two individuals are pretty quality nice dump down there by cummer to stanley good high low action there by the pirates against that zone pushes that lead back out to 14 42-28 going to be a travel on the play nice job there elaine not falling for that spin that's a wily veteran there he's uh he's done that move a couple of times and lane made sure he didn't jump and try to take it away knew that he where he was coming back to is able to force that turnover pirates will walk it up now against the 2-3 zone of jackson dell running the la play little indiana action there run by the pirates so on on that particular set coach is there like a seal or a screen on a particular couple spots on the zone you you um you send your your weak side big across the lane and you want them calling for the but you want everybody in the gym thinking man there's there's a screw loose on that kid because they're screaming for the ball but what that does is nice high-low action run there by jackson dell but what that what that does is that even makes the defense turn its head and then you send your ball side big across the lane to screen the bottom of that zone and it and most of the time it opens up a lob for your opposite wing lane gets to his favorite spot there on the floor that mid-range jumper kind of a lost art in a game of basketball but one that lane has made his bread and butter that is very true lane excels on that mid-range and you know the game how it's evolved that's not really coached much anymore because it's not usually deemed a high quality shot and what's funny about that when you watch kids do individual workouts and things that's actually a shot that that they take quite a bit in their workouts but then once the once the game starts happening you know those bright lights come on they're either getting to the rim or they're corking threes i think i saw a study done where teams if if they attack the rim and they shoot threes and they shoot a lot of free throws there's not much better off offensive efficiency out there well and it makes a lot of sense because you they've always said the old stack goes back to you only have to shoot 33 percent from three to equal what it would be to be shooting 50 from two and so you know you think about that that's out of 10 field goal attempts that's basically two less field goals you have to make and yes they are from farther out on the floor but if you have the right guys shooting them you know that that's pretty good math in your favor another offensive rebound there by jackson dell as they trail here 44-32 trying to cut into this pirate 12-point advantage get it in today his 15-footer is no good rebounded onto play by kai he's going to be fouled pirates will take it out of bounds you know you just referenced kai dyer he's a kid that's trying to round in a form as well we talk about walters and stanley and cummer and sparks and and kai is a kid whose contributions also sometimes don't show up on the stat sheet the pirates need him as we go down the stretch to be assertive advantageous and and look for opportunities but yet flow into the system that stacy wants to have for his team so kai's trying to round into form and i think he's doing a good job of doing that you know i just noticed something here grant you know it is super bowl weekend and it's been a few years ago but we had the notorious wardrobe malfunction during the super bowl we've had a wardrobe change here the first half colin cummer was playing in number 42 and now he's back to his original 12.

not sure if uh had it was a blood situation or what but calling back to his familiar number 12. that's a that's a good pickup you know when is there a process you got to go through and reporting that to the scores yeah to make sure the book is correct and it's it's strange that he would have gone back to 12 because normally once you change it in the score book they just go ahead and they keep it there for the game but for whatever reason we've gotten it back as lane gets into the lane and scores at the rim 46-32 now pirates push that advantage back up to 14. jackson dale comes back on the attack nice job there as simon staying under control finishing at the rim i i'm going to go ahead and make a bold statement here i think that jackson dell is going to compete to the very end as we discussed but this pace of play with the running back and forth that does not set up well with jackson dell and what they want to do i do not think they can run with our pirates as they do score a transition layup there but i think if they're wanting to really challenge and win this game they're gonna have to settle in and grind it by eating the elephant one bite at a time instead of having this track meet because i think that goes in the advantage of greensburg that was 32 christian cummer on the run out there brings jacksondale back to within 10 minute 47 to go into third quarters coach meyer calls his first timeout of the basketball game here i think maybe not upset just one of wants to re-corral the troops and settle things down that last couple possessions been rather sloppy a little helter skelter yeah and you notice i'm peeking over i'm behind we're behind the bench and i'm peeking into the huddle it appears that coach meyer is trying to teach a specific point that he's wanting to make here and explaining it to all the guys so it's probably more on a team flow concept more than an individual mistake and i think it's a timely uh situation to take a timeout here and and just kind of settle in and remind the guys hey we're fine we're still at 10 let's just calm down a little bit both teams break their huddles pirates will bring it the length of the floor stanley inbounds to sparks jacksondale's still back in their 2-3 zone brett stringer back into the game for the pirates swings over to sparks skipped across the floor to comer inside to stanley going to be recovered by jackson dell gets it to gail who scores on the right hand side brings them back to within eight did that have a little george girvin feel on the finish a little although there's one thing he could do and it was finger roll tell you what the pirates have done a nice job here on a few different possessions finding walters opposite he does a good job pinning hit the backside of that zone high opening up that lob on the backside you know i'm looking at the foul count here and jackson dallas 4000 greensburg has not been called for a foul yet the officials you know you can debate but they have been consistent with letting these kids play throughout the game i think that's key i would definitely say you walk away from this game you can say that the referees let them play like this last take down there lane is a big strong kid but he got fouled on his way to the rim able to finish through the contact they didn't call it but will take the two points as day's three-point attempt is no good rebounded on the play inadvertent whistle there might have taken away two points for jackson dell but they will retain possession impressive rebound there by number 40 caleb simon as he went up with two hands and rebounded up above everybody inadvertent whistle there by the official but jacksondell will retain possession stolen on the play by sparks he's going to race up the floor in transition emphasis on race fumbles it away boy turnover you know they do pirates they do the stats and nfl games where they do the top speed elaine sparks might have had the top speed of the season there um i can't believe that uh coach moore hasn't sprung for the the amazon next gen stats for our broadcast to see what the top speed elaine sparks was oh gotta get a side jab in there too bad it's off the mic two straight misses at the rim by jackson dell leaves the pirates with that ten point lead sparks gets inside kicks across to comer his three-point attempt is good that's the end of the third quarter the pirates lead 51-38 you reference brett stringer's unselfish play earlier in the game where he found an open shooter laying there got in the paint and then was able to elevate and find colin and make make the three those are championship plays and it's good to see that that can happen from a bench player that would be number six or seven and also from your marquee star player so good basketball good unselfish play and that is how you win games well obviously grant we're in the midst of tournament time for the girls and we're a few short weeks away from the boys side of things kicking off here i think their sectional draw will be in about two weeks time gonna be the all eiac conference tournament as it normally is and you know judging by recent results and conference results looks like this year could come down to the pirates and the connersville spartans who were actually able to get the best of the pirates here on their home court earlier this season when they came into town and beat the pirates 49-42 in overtime that was a game that the pirates trailed the entire way and were able to tie it at the buzzer to send it into overtime lane sparks fouls out of that game and after he fouled out they were able to take control and pull out that eiac conference victory but the pirates are hoping for revenge when it really counts the most in the post postseason you know i can't remember were we both on the call for that connersville game yes we were okay that that i i would call that for a high school contest that was a slugfest and i i hope that the pirates are destined to meet them in in the sectional final or wherever it comes in in post-season play um because i i think it'd be a heck of a ball game and i think the pirates have what it takes to come out victorious it will be good basketball and it will be earned whoever whichever team comes out on top cummer fouled there on the play looked like a little bit of wwf wrestling action there i think he might have gotten head butted on the play thank goodness there were no turnbuckles involved in that play is jake the snake out there there might have been a rock bottom by four right there somewhere i did not think we'd get a hacksaw jim duggan reference on the broadcast today the only thing that would have been better when i brought up turnbuckles if you would have thrown out george the animal steel oh but i digress and we just talked about how the entire game they've been allowing them to let them play and then a little ticky tack foul called there on kai dyer that had no bearing on the play whatsoever you got to love referees that are consistently inconsistent yeah you know the jacksondale fan base is applauding because it is the first team foul on the pirates and we're at seven minutes to go in the fourth quarter so they i don't know if that was an exceptional play or an exceptional read but either one that was a great job there by number 40 caleb simon on that last out of bounds play gail's three-point attempt is up and no good sparks on the rebound he's going to be fouled he'll go to the line for the one and bonus pirates have been able to push this lead out to 15 now they lead 55 to 40 with 6 41 to go in the game you know 6 40 to go as you said and the pirates do not have anybody lined up for a rebound do you see that a lot would that be a strategy that you would employ on the girls side well sometimes you do that to maybe save legs sometimes you do that because you actually talk to them during the first free throw and you don't want to risk a foul because of foul situations but right now with only one team foul against the pirates and sometimes it is because the other team's been exploiting your lack of transition defense and we have seen that a bit today by jackson dell being able to get out in transition so that might have been something coach meyer was looking at as well ball caught on to play possession belongs to the pirates kai dyer jumping in there and getting some extra hustle and causing the jump ball and ball alternative possession goes to parts again let's just say we are consistently charge inconsistent called on the play against colin cummer i i will not i'm not referencing this particular crew but you can it's okay i'm having trouble as i watch different basketball games at all levels i'm talking junior high boys girls what is the definition of a charge like how is it how is it called how is it defined because and and i'm not even referencing the nba because it's a whole other thing but a charge call i don't i don't understand what it is anymore uh to be questionable it's almost like past interference where you know they've come to the point where past interference is called on every single play that the ball is throwing in the vicinity of a wide receiver there's going to be pass interference called whereas now with a charge if a kid basically is standing square to the offensive player doesn't matter if they're moving doesn't matter anything a lot of officials are starting to give them charges even if they're walking backwards and things which if they're going to be consistent on that that's fine but here again it goes back to lack of consistency and that's where the frustration comes in because they never call it the same way twice and i'm all about rewarding a kid who's got the guts and toughness to step in and check take a charge because that's not something that's very common that you find a lot and when you find a kid that's willing to do that they should be rewarded for it but what i hate is when they reward a defender who actually endangers the offensive player when they get up in the air to go finish at the rim and they allow a defender to slide under and just because they say they were stationary you know that's a dangerous play that you're allowing to happen and and i hate to see a defender that's rewarded in that way i just struggle with understanding like an official will call it one way on in one instance and then you go to another game or you know or maybe even the same official have a different interpretation in the same game it just it just doesn't make a lot of sense to me but you know what i'm not the smartest guy that's ever lived so we'll have to deal with it pirates now up 19 with about five minutes to go colin cummer surveys the floor as they try to get a good quality look on this possession lane didn't like the lack of a call on that play pirates still lead here 59 to 40.

biggest lead of the game here for the pirates at 19. coach meyer gave him the zipper lip uh expression just play move forward rebound on the play there by stanley simon's three-point attempt was off the mark kicked up the floor to dyer kai looked at the three thought better of it swung across the floor now to walters good back door cut there by lane and a lot of times in motion offense even though you don't get a a pass on a backdoor cut like that it does does so many good things for your offense because you're shifting the defense and really i think what what a lot of fans may not see is that such an unselfish play for a kid to make you're cutting just for the betterment of your team and even though you know you may not receive the pass with the ability to score all you're doing is helping your team because you're running meaningful offense i think we touched on this on a previous broadcast where kids that uh want to get open and want to score oftentimes it's set up by a back screen or there's action before that and they do that you know selfishly for for themselves to get open but i think from a team concept a kid finishing a cut curling hard and then someone to be able to replace behind their action will get another teammate open as you as you can nice look into the post there by brandon stanley lobs over to the defense dakota walters did a great job pinning his man on the high side he finishes at the rim for two more and here again i know you and i have been together on a few different broadcasts now this year and every time we we've talked about the importance of dakota walters and what what his offensive aggressiveness could mean to this team and today it's been no different i know he had at least nine in the first half because he made three threes but then i know he got to the rim a couple of times and then to say he's got to be getting close to 20 points we had a foul called on the play foul was called on lane sparks we have a technical foul on the play called against lane not sure what he did lane looks as confused as anybody else you know i didn't i'm taking a second here to survey people's reactions and also kind of collect some information as to what happened i am not sure what warranted that call okay so after the two and they've changed this in in recent history grant it used to be on a technical fall it automatically would be two shots in the basketball along with what and now it's turned into point of interruption so there was a foul called on the shot he got those two free throws and it goes in the order that it happened so the point of interruption was afterwards that's why they would have gotten they got the two free throws for the technical foul but then they got possession yeah because they still had possession when the technical foul was called not because it was a technical which used to automatically mean you were going to gain possession no matter when it happened so in theory what could happen is you could get called for a technical foul while your team has the ball and the opposing team would get their free throws for the technical but that you would retain possession of the ball they've changed how that works a little bit i would think with some of those subtle changes as an official that'd be demanding to know the execution of the rules in all situations because you could get some um unique unique circumstances that you might have to talk through that and make sure that you get it right um that one i think was pretty easy for the officials there in that instance but i'm still kind of confused as to what warrant to the technical call there but um fortunately the pirates are up 21 and as the officials try to manage this game we hope we can not let it get too chippy and and have a successful finish you know and as it looks obvious here that the pirates are are going to come away with the victory i still have to say you know and we kind of touched on it earlier they're up by 23 now 64-41 it's not been near as easy as as what the the score says that it looks like it could be as cummer's going to go in he's going to get the two-hand dunk but jackson dale you look at this team at the 1a level this is not going to be a team that's going to go away quietly once it becomes tournament time for them yeah i i i said earlier i like some of the pieces that they have the the flow of this game kind of got away from them and the style that they want to play and you know what greensburg is a very good team so they just put it on jacksondale here today but as jacksondell looks to compete in their sectional with morristown rising sun southwestern shelby oldenburg hauser and waldron i think they i think they match up pretty well i have happen to be looking at you know common opponents here they're three and one against sectional teams as morristown is 4-0 so those two teams are are probably likely to meet to contest for their own sectional championship that is hosted at southwestern shelby so um i don't think jacksonville has anything to worry about when it comes to a successful close their season and i think something that can be said for for both of these programs and and then even i hope can be said about about our program on the girls side is you know success breeds success and past success does nothing for you as far as getting you a win in the current year but what it does is it builds it builds that character in your kids that they expect to win there's not a fear of losing they expect to win and they they work to do the things that it takes to win and you know both of these programs on the floor have multiple state titles um and so even though none of these kids were involved in any of those that's now the expectation of the program you can't come in and work halfway you can't come in and be half speed and i i think that that that just goes such a long way in even though it was past success and what you do in the present i really do feel like that that has some bearing on each current year's team i agree whenever you establish tradition history legacy in some of those long-term concepts um there's just an unspoken expectation in a uh a level of excellence that happens all throughout the program and it gets developed in the younger players as you as you look at your feeder system so once you have it you need to maintain it and we've been fortunate to have a lot of success on both sides of the program here at greensburg community high school hey i do have a no here uh coach simpson that our next broadcast will be february 18th that is a thursday night contest and that is a reschedule from our rushville game that was lost um this past thursday night at this time it does look to be a jv varsity contest and we will be bringing varsity action to you probably around 7 15 7 30 depending on how the night unfolds we will get the link out for that contest when we get a little closer but that will be our next gtv broadcast and hopefully we can avoid the technical issues that that we had today but we're going to try to get that live stream and get that on our etc local channel as well through all the services that gtv provides and i'm pretty sure that the a team will be back on the call nice job there i'd say that's probably pretty likely um i i'm a little close to full committal being the father of five because every day is an adventure for me typically but um well i mean the pay is so good that i don't know how we could turn it screams at me every time i take the mic so um that's back that's back at coach moore for the comment made earlier that didn't reach the microphone so good for him pirates going to dribble it out here they're going to come away with a 28-point victory at home against jackson dale 73-45 but one that was a lot closer than what the final score is going to end up being yeah much agreed much agreed a lot of a lot of respect a lot of respect between these two programs and also these two schools being so geographically close and also just good communities so um happy for the pirates get a 28-point win here and um they they move right along in their schedule we want to thank everybody for joining us today on gtv like mr peters said our next broadcast will be thursday february 18th 18th here on gtv that link will get sent out as quickly as we have it if you can't join us in person join us on gtv february 18th ballpark 7 15.

good afternoon thank you for joining us this is the committee on education monday february 8th 3 o'clock committee meeting in conference room 229. with us in the room we have senator drew kanuha vice chair senator donna marcotte kim online i believe we have senator favela this meeting including the audio and video of remote participants is being streamed live on youtube you will find links to the committee on education in the unlikely event that we have to abruptly end this hearing due to major technical difficulties the committee will reconvene to discuss any outstanding business at wednesday february 10 at 3 pm and a public notice will be posted on the legislature's website i'd like to take this time to remind our testifiers that due to time restrictions on our hearings we will be limiting testimony to one minute per testifier per bill for the people participating remotely all testifier audio will be muted and video disabled until shortly before it is your turn to testify when i call your name staff will unmute you and your time will begin after your minute is completed staff will mute you so that we can move this hearing along in an orderly and efficient manner thank you starting with our first agenda item senate bill 813 relating to charter schools requires authorizers to provide each charter school it oversees a list of approved independent auditors testify ivan lao interim executive director state public charter school commission yvonne thank you chair kidani vice chair kim members of the committee thank you so much for allowing us to speak in strong support of this bill simply put in addition to our written testimony we're asking that we be allowed to add additional uh qualified auditors to this list we have needs for additional auditors for neighbor island schools and we want to make sure that we're able to provide them with the qualified auditors instead of limiting it to just three so we thank you for that um for that proposed change i'm happy to take any questions thank you members are there any questions if not uh there is no one else to give oral testimony although we have written testimony that you may review at a later time moving on to item number two senate bill relating to charter schools clarifies the process for applicants to submit a letter of intent to apply to open and operate a charter school provides for penalties for authorizers who fail to timely comply with board decisions and we have oral testimony again from yvonne lau exec interim executive director hawaii state public charter school thank you chair kim vice chair i'm sorry chair kidani vice chair kim and members of the committee thank you so much for allowing us to provide comments on this bill we understand that there were a number of issues that we encountered this session this last year and we are proposing that we amend the statute to eliminate the requirement for the intent to apply and to simplify the process so that all that are interested and want to apply for a charter school can do so and that the commission can review their applications secondly the additions or the changes to the statute in section two i would simply say that there are existing mechanisms with the board of education that can address the issues with any authorizer or a charter school commission to exercise their oversight authority and uh additionally this the second part of that section also appears to have a process already in place that we stated in our written testimony so we're happy to work with the committee and other interested thank you yvonne also to provide oral testimony is murat arabaki marat please aloha thank you chair kidani vice chair kim and members of the committee i'll speak in favor of this bill i represent a charter school applicant group kulia academy we are proposing to open a school in kalihi area we very much support this bill i think it is very helpful i submitted a written testimony i also would like to add if the if you would consider adding like uh if we can ask some clarifying questions to the authorizer that would be really helpful certain things are subject to interpretation and a lot of times we can like i mean we might not know the expectation or the interpretation of the authorizer so it would be helpful thank you so much again thank you members questions if not that is concludes the oral testimony we do have written testimony as well with no questions members moving on to item three also relating to charter schools requires that a minimum of two of the three auditors selected by the authorizer for the state's public charter schools have offices on the neighbor islands to testify ivan lao interim executive director yvonne please thank you chair kidani vice chair kim members of the committee again we thank you for the opportunity to provide comments we believe that senate bill 813 would actually address this concern it has always been the commission's intent to increase the number of auditors that can service all 37 of our schools understanding that we have a number of our schools on our neighbor islands we welcome any additional neighbor island auditors that are qualified to do that and we would love to be able to add them to our list of auditors thank you thank you yvonne members any questions no questions we have no further oral testimony moving on to item number four senate bill 806 i'm sorry 808 relating to the school facilities agency describes the powers and responsibilities of the school facilities agency by amending acts 72 session laws of hawaii 2020 the school facilities agency there was no testimony submitted on this item members questions comments if not moving on to the next item senate bill 863 relating to school improvements requires the department of education to conduct an electrical assessment on all public and charter schools in the state to determine whether its electrical capacity will allow for the installation of air conditioning units and other air purifying devices and note the level of need in each classroom requires the department of education to submit a report of its findings and recommendations to the legislature no later than december 31st to testify randy tanaka assistant superintendent department of education randy please hello senator cherokee donning vice chair kim members of the committee we have submitted testimony thank you very much for your time and efforts once again for the interests of schools and our students so we stand by our testimony hello thank you senator kanu has questions thank you chair hello randy hello senator um just a quick question i know you mentioned that you know we could view details of the assessments through the department cip project tracking system um you know part of this bill also i mean it asks for report you know to me i mean that's that's kind of like it's real sometimes real difficult to go through the system to kind of pull out you know individual uh needs yeah so that's why i kind of asked you know an overall report about the entire uh doe system it just simplifies the the way we can look at it yes i i agree with your point um in in the private sector we would have an annual report that describes all the different things that we're doing uh success or where we are so we we're i've introduced that is part of our ongoing program for the system that we use called cpt which is really to track projects at the school level i've also had them customize reports that aggregates all the different work that we're doing so we can send that to you in a pdf form um or uh have that trained through one of your your staff so that's the adjustments i've made in the last uh five six months so the system is a little more friendly because if you've got to dig through it it it can get a little cumbersome so that's kind of where we are just a side comment on the electrical and system with within our schools we've got from 11 to 12 000 classrooms and to go through this process which we have already begun through an assessment program called high fit to uh to take a look at our energy efficiency so it's a it's a long journey but we have started that process thank you no thank you it's good it's good to know because you know going through this whole process it was kind of you know talking story with each individual school and their process of going through the electrical assessment of every you know the vice principals did it and then had to go through the principle and then it was just an arduous process to go through especially when you know at the time trying to get our schools with um the needed uh ac but now this also includes you know air purifying systems too you know whether the the classrooms are equipped to handle you know possible uh air purifying systems so that's that's something that would be good to know as well yeah fortunately the units the air purifiers we bought are are those that can plug into the room so it's not an extraordinary demand on the circuitry uh we've installed nearly 3 500 air purifiers not every class can't can get it because of the limitations of the funding we had but it allows for those critical classes that the air circulation is less than optimal so we've been we've had the schools determine what those rooms are and continue to to evaluate so those units have all been delivered to to the schools and operating thanks randy thanks chair thank you randy of the 3 500 air purifiers that were installed were these also installed in uh those those classrooms that you know within the last couple years were air conditioned were installed with air conditioners yes it's a kind of a double edge the the recent guidance from cdc and the department of health is to try to get air circulation as best we can in the rooms and those centralized air systems are a little challenging because it didn't have the kind of our ability to open windows so air purifiers went in there we increased and made sure we're cleaning the filters in all these systems as best we can open windows and create that ventilation we have to be cautious that we're not blowing uh or evacuating air across students but it's really an up and out system so where if if someone is sick we're not blowing that across the students so we've taken there's an organization called ashrae which is a heating and air conditioning association and they have provided guidance on how to best circulate air in the room and they have a model that gives us a calculation on how frequent we're circulating that air air purifiers were really designed to to be in those rooms that had less than perfect air circulation so they're all in operation thank you randy um thank you um one of the questions that i wanted to ask you was when we did uh install air conditioning in many of the classrooms a couple years ago was it also required that we seal the windows closed is that that is correct and and so in some of the the rooms there's this plexiglass over the louvers the jealousies jealousies are not exactly the best sealant to keep the cold air in the room so we place those plexiglass on it that is problematic for us because now we have to take them off and some of them were cut specifically to those windows and we've got to make sure that we retain those and mark them properly so if there comes a time we need to replace those plexiglasses on those windows where we're not searching for the right fit so that has been a little problematic as our schools are not in full occupancy the process for those rooms that need it have been accomplished there's still i'm sure a few that we need to work on but you are correct the windows were sealed with a plexiglas covering thank you randy appreciate the information thank you okay i don't see any more testifiers so members if no further questions we will be moving to the next item senate bill 365 relating to student informed consent allows public school students in grades k through 12 to decline participation in dissection by section and other procedures harmful to animals requires schools to make alternative educational projects available and the board of education to develop rules and give notice to all schools to testify terry ushijima assistant superintendent i believe terry's video is not working so she will be just giving testimony department respectfully submits that given the board policies and department regulations currently in play place the measure is not needed at this time thank you for the opportunity to testify and i am available to answer any questions thank you terry members any questions no questions thank you terry next item on the agenda senate bill 843 relating to career and technical education authorizes the department of education teachers to instruct vocation technical or career pathway classes without possessing an applicable bachelor's degree expands the sources of monies that may be deposited into the private trade vocational and technical school special fund and the purposes for which the fund may be used appropriates monies to testify terry ushijima assistant superintendent department of education terry please thank you chair kidani um again i'm testifying on behalf of superintendent kishimoto for the department of education uh we stand on our written testimony and offer comment on senate bill 0843 the hawaii teacher standards board currently issues a standard limited license and cte for potential teachers with industry experience and no bachelor's degree the department appreciates the proposed amendment to hawaii revised statute 302 a-425.5 which would rename the special fund to allow the department to use this fund to maintain its existing cte programs expand its program offerings and promote dual credit cte courses the department is concerned that hb 1299 proposes to eliminate this special fund thank you for the opportunity to testify and i am available to answer questions thank you members any questions if not lynn hammond's executive director testifying for hawaii teachers standards board then please thank you chair kidani vice chair mercado kim and members of the committee i'm lynn hammons executive director of the hawaii teacher standards board offering comments on this bill as the doe commented htsp does currently offer a cte permit plus four categories of licenses in the cte fields one of which does not require a bachelor's degree so i would be happy to answer any questions you have about these licenses or the permit the only other thing i would recommend is on page four of the bill lines 13-16 16 allowed the department to issue certificates in this field and i would offer the recommendation that this could be confusing to teachers in the field if the department is also issuing a certificate to teach so we would ask that maybe that portion be removed thank you thank you lynn members questions if not that's all the testimony oral testimony we have on this particular bill moving on our final bill senate bill 1004 relating to education beginning with the 2021-2020 school year requires the department of education to include the vice chairman khada and members of the committee also at testifying on behalf of the department of education on behalf of superintendent kishimoto we stand on our written testimony and offer comment on senate bill 1004 the department would like to highlight that there are very personal transition plans or ptp models across the high schools and each high school has the flexibility to design its ptp curriculum within the department's guidelines and there are various options to deliver financial literacy that schools can select from given the various options to include financial literacy in the school curriculum the department feels this bill is not needed at this time thank you for this opportunity to testify and i am available for questions thank you members questions if not next to testify stephanie sakamoto testifying for hawaii credit union leader stephanie oh sorry aloha senator stephanie sakamoto on behalf of the hawaii credit union league we're in strong support of financial literacy for students and we'll stand on our written testimonials apart thank you thank you members any questions uh stephanie i have a question does the credit union league have any kind of uh financial literacy program for students yes we do um through several credit unions there are some programs there's one called kid life smarts that's currently offered through a high school program i believe and the credit unions also assist in starting student-run credit unions in several high schools that that has a financial literacy component as well and so so this program is needs an instructor to do the program or is this on video or how is that this provided um i think it's the life smarts one and the student-run credit unions i believe they're considered extracurricular so i'm not completely sure who does the teaching i know that credit unions have professionals that facilitate it but i'm not sure how they work directly with the doe i would have to check thank you i'd appreciate that information stephanie okay i can get that thank you members any questions any further questions if not thank you stephanie thank you concludes our agenda and we will recess for but this sign and this side yep [Music] that's nice okay i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all all right with the sent agenda anybody have conditions or changes comments there's two quick items i wanted to mention on the consent agenda the daycare job descriptions we had to make a couple of slight adjustments on there so if you would take a peek real quick at the documents there was just some wording i'm going to just go over that real quick with you that was like duplicated we didn't catch that so again and then an adjustment so i'm going to look at number four essential functions on the daycare center instructor it says adhere to the plan of communication outline for use between daycare staff and child's family just want to mention that that's like there will be like an app or a or texting whatever we use like during the day there will be some connection to the code throughout the day we want to publicize with our parents what we're doing with their kids the great things so don't be using an app or texting and so we adjusted that wording from the document that we had on the original it's number four on essential functions and then there was a question on number 14 if you go down to 14 general responsibilities and a question came up about successfully passed cpr training every two years and defensive driving driving training every three years if transporting students we weren't sure again should that be a general responsibility for like essential functions we decided to put under general responsibilities because if we're going to ask people to do that then we should train them in that and we do have in-kind donations from the health department for training for cpr we can do the defensive driving with doug aurore and his uh and his uh expertise on that and then there was one other item oh we had duplication in the original document of the physical requirements slash environmental conditions now we've got them all under one section we actually had that and then down below we had another section that says physical requirements environmental conditions there were two sections of that for some reason we didn't catch that error so that's the adjustment to those two documents and essentially the daycare center instructor and the daycare aid job description we adjusted them both on the same and then the last thing yes the last thing i want to mention is on the daycare center instructor job notice how we did work that we didn't say daycare senate teacher that position is not going to fall under the salary schedule for teachers so again it will be a different salary based on our budget that we have in regards to the grant funding that we have for the daycare so again the daycare center instructor job is not going to fall under teachers salary for like the negotiated agreement for our um our salary schedule it'll be a different salary depending upon their experience um so anyway and that's all i had for just a couple of comments any questions or anything else i'll make motion to approve the consent agenda as presented second all those in favor or opposed vote on your computer mike i can't tell when i voted seven zero communications written items [Music] and then administrative reports switched up the order on us but we'll go we'll still start with the elementary school anything for darla [Music] dhs uh i've got one individual i'd like to recognize this came tonight she uh she is a kansas honor uh a student she has been because they recalculated that semester we added two more kansas honors students okay so at semester we recalculated and trevor meyer uh david myers was one who is being recognized along with the other kids and it's not david lucas sorry guys it's david out and so we're gonna recognize her tonight and guys this is just a huge honor part of the reason why they uh recalculated is because they didn't have the banquet like i told you and they are trying to they're looking at things that they might do second semester for them but they don't get that really that banquet so i want to make sure we recognize them here and let everybody know that we did have two other kids and guys we've got a huge class of some very very high level kids and it's it's great to see them on that continuous basis and they're still meeting those requirements that the student that the teachers are asking them to do and there's high expectations she is uh one of our footnotes pet students by the way guys and she'll be heading on to pitt state if i'm not mistaken and uh she's going to follow the passion that she's already created at flynn hills back and she'll have a two-year degree there and then she's going to move on to pitt state i'm not going to hold that against her yet i do want to recognize her because she's doing great things for herself by doing all the things that she's doing right now so thank you [Music] good job just guys there was one thing uh i'll let dave talk to her real quick he doesn't even know he's going to but i know he can handle it uh guys as things are going right now there's a lot of changes uh because of different things and our homecoming is going to be changed and flood dave just left correctly to recognize that date because i know that's a big date we've had to reset it and senior nights have been reset and i'll let him talk to that um just and do it with everything kids that are going in and out of quarantine the longer now we're dealing with weather um we had our version one of senior night last friday against iowa we'll have version two this thursday against eureka and maybe a version three because we have a couple kids we don't know if we're gonna have back in time so we're gonna get all the seniors recognized some way in some manner and then wrestling this weekend with uh regional boys and girls on friday and saturday and then the makeup boys game with anderson county is saturday afternoon at burlington middle school and i guys i want to recognize again dave doing an unbelievable job for our tournament we got our tournament in with no hitches which is unbelievable based upon all the other uh communities and stuff six games uh six nights of games i don't even know how many games it seemed like it was 24 24.

good afternoon chris cooper here superintendent of clearwater schools with an important announcement due to the deteriorating weather this week in the forecast predicting subzero wind chills and precipitation on thursday and friday all clearwater schools will be going to a remote learning environment for thursday and friday so we're anticipating regular school on wednesday on site as we have been all year and a remote learning environment for thursday and friday february 11th and 12th if you've not already received it each building will be sending out specific communication about expectations and a little more clarification about what this means at each grade level in our district if you have any special circumstances please make sure to call the school office or email and let us know if there's anything we can do to help during this time extracurricular activities scheduled during thursday and friday will be determined as we get closer to that time we will be working with the other schools that are involved with us in those activities and see what we can accomplish and what we need to cancel meals will be provided for thursday and friday for any students who desire to have those they will all be packaged together and the pickup time for those meals will be thursday at 11 a.m to 12 30 p.m the pickup location will be in the roundabout behind cims just as it was for summer lunch if you're interested in taking advantage of that please email our food service director brenda hastings at bhastings at usd264.org um some things that we can accomplish by doing remote learning this thursday and friday is one thing we'll keep on track to meet the required hours for each school year and not have to go longer into may or hopefully um worst case scenario into june so this will help us avoid that it also will give us a good uh trial run with the day's uh preparation to be ready if we ever have to do remote learning again this year due to quarantines or anything like that so our goal is to keep everyone safe and to also continue learning as best we can in this environment i just want to thank everyone for your flexibility reach out if needed to your schools to to let us know if there's anything that we can do i'd also like to remind you that monday february 15th is a no student day as well it's on the calendar as a teacher staff development day so there'll be no school on monday as well we're hoping that that gets us through this maybe historic stretch of really cold weather and gets us back on track next week again let us know if there's anything we can do to help thanks for everybody's flexibility and take care stay warm out there

if yes please united states here [Music] so welcome back coming to the meeting forward just trying to get some normalcy as we go forward um thank you so much um [Music] okay is not available [Applause] foreign [Music] [Applause] foreign any dead specialist of the year for small school [Music] uh and the future of the year for founders is so he's on blue right now no no we could please can we can't hear her out here can you tell her to hold on a second hold on one second [Music] foreign ask her to just say something all right um about um ensuring that local boards and education and administrators hold the respective announcements of the people that they serve and if this [Music] or um a potential impression of the perception that the public trust is being violated so it is something that all the boards of education are required to do along with all school trustees as well and it really does provide specific standards behavior um and ensures that there's a disciplinary mechanism to ensure there's uniforms about others um along with filing your annual financial basis so the school ethics act was established [Music] um as well as mandatory training which came later and long after the act that has not been around the entire time so the school ethics commission is composed of nine individuals who are appointed by the governor um there are two school board members two school administrators and five citizens um currently there are student agencies on the school ethics commission there's a board member and two members of the public and i'm hoping [Music] um is um and then training specifically on the open public meetings act as well as the open public records act and for those of you who are musical versions that we have acronyms for everything okay um so if i'm using the terms if you don't um is of things that may have changed since you first became a board member so it's important to know that the sec has two different means by which you can adjudicate issues um it will issue an advisory opinion on um and just make the opinion public so that you as a board member will know that it is um although this year and for several years about five or six years ago they hadn't had six members on the advising um connection to the athletics commission and then all of a sudden they got six members and they issued about 30 advisories [Music] so you need to know that that means anyone another board member a member of your public a member community members from other communities have to give you some idea of what they occupied themselves with in 2020 um they drafted 21 advisory opinions and only made one public the other 20 went to those 49ers [Music] until um december 21st of that year okay um in terms of school ethics violations there were 24 cases and presented with [Music] so you can um or removed people come from their voice so here is the ethics opinion from this year um a superintendent sister-in-law and brother's wife she was hired for employees that unfortunately for his sister-in-law um she could not be promoted because the public could perceive that as perhaps the unwanted privilege of advances or employment um essentially so many people so the superintendent um must also accuse himself of any discussion on his sister-in-law's employment as a budget um so understand that superintendents are not submitted to recommend family members their family members towards your family members as board members family members for employment in the schools if you have a family member and typically they can't be promoted to a different position if he is very suffering houston is able to fill that position okay so the sec has the public to recommend the board member to central by um of a resolution in a public view um and it recommends simply a letter of review from the commissioner so the sec makes recommendations to the commissioner if a board member kills so they do use their authority um they don't do it all the time um here's the code itself um the state board of education and all of the course in new jersey so that means you must abide by all um federal and state laws um so if there's a particular part of the curriculum um educational new jersey constitution that says that every school district must provide it means you are a policymaking for your students your staff your community members and to responsibility is policy planning has to do with ensuring that you have a quality educational and co-curricular program in place is the board holds the superintendent accountable for his or her performance and then the superintendent will all [Music] and that's an important piece and should not be leaders in your district who have the expertise individual board members confidentiality [Laughter] um you're required to vote to appoint the best qualified personnel after consideration of your superintendent that does not mean you have to vote yet on every single appointment that means you have to um consider all of your teachable administrators recommendations understand that the board cannot um appoint anyone without an affirmative recommendation of the superintendent so if um someone is walking before the board the boy does not support or employment that's okay school personnel from the public performance of your duties um which simply means that your responsibility is to make sure that your staff ability to do their job effectively is supported by the board of education um what you can do is to provide them with access to so you need to remember that and you need to make sure that your superintendent is aware of failed to put on their financial disclosure form that they foreign [Music] there was a potential violation of the open public meetings act because discussing um or any sort of business on emails with one another um it is too lazy to name it because clearly this was understanded but it can have negative consequences and exposure to liability that you don't want to do and it also um is likely by membership again you know the essence talks to us regularly um because we are charged with mandatory training and charged with um um in the law and so one of their sec's questions plus is how much can you train um a board member posted the content on the blog on the qualification salary and general employment of a standard teacher um so you have to again understand that while you are at freedom of speech once you become a state official with confidential information um there are limitations around not only confidential information but information around staff that you have to um [Music] diminishes the entire board's integrity um [Music] so just very very circumspect about anything that you post and absolutely if you have a concern about a teacher [Music] um this particular decision impacted the board of president [Music] and again the fdc has recommended center um the board member has come off the course of the opportunity when the school ethics commission was very clear um [Music] the day-to-day operations is ability [Music] um okay so when we talk about that is a conflict of interest um if there is a you must immediately confuse yourself and not participate in discussion um if you as a school official um [Music] definition of an immediate family member is espoused through the child residency but again for using your positions of employment it extends to others which includes the efforts of policy um definition of a relative and here you see the definition that is applied there and here even so you have to be careful um [Music] and that exception is if you can't find anyone else qualified to do before you can ask the executive superintendent for permission to hire that military um i think the only um if you have a relative already who works in the district um you are conflicted out of and will not take part in any um part of the search selection or hiring of a new school administrator [Music] administrator [Music] any capacity including summer world a substitute teacher a teacher an administrator it doesn't matter okay in terms of collective bargaining this is the question we often get asked um we do have a spouse a dependent child um if it is you or your spouse or a dependent child works in another school district the same for a similar statewide union typically that would be an ipa affiliate american federation of teachers we also have some little teasers so they have said you can say before similar to statewide so all of those will be included you cannot participate in negotiations however you may vote once there is involved officer in the district where they're um [Music] um [Music] if you have any questions [Music] um again other possible conflicts um if you're against this [Music] unless the financial contribution is given and it's integrated oftentimes uh local unions or even the states will endorse folks running through the board of education prior to this particular advisory opinion for the first year you could not participate in elections it is no longer an absolute caveat that you cannot participate in year one if you've been influenced and interestingly enough what you're beginning to see is that there are several distances implies where um associations are only endorsing um not incumbent in an effort um the incumbents if their hands were in the midst of marketing with the association even that has been useful said on the negotiations so sometimes um the sec changes things and it may have unintended consequences i'm not suggesting that that was the intent of this advisory but numerous incumbents who have not been endorsed who have um not gotten reelected as the associations spend a significant amount of money um and just help feed your partners and um it is always destroying board um over that particular issue if you have so many conflicted members that you cannot um negotiate or you cannot hire someone because that requires a whole majority of the work action um conflicts if that happens because the doctrine of necessity simply but you don't need more than one eligible member to negotiate um because it's not a matter that you're going to require um without having others involved in terms of negotiations and certainly research is important to research not even a majority um because they're conflicted out and you cannot [Music] position with your um you do not want to handle any school funds um you know this is relatively recent um elementary level i on a regular basis um that would appear to be fresh in the building and so you are no longer able to do that so we are not trying to stop you from volunteering in your schools um you should be able to say well at the end um school often you should be able to say no will it seem to people that are visitors hope that i've worked in the school if that's the case that's a problem um [Music] um including um your foundation your education foundation district council no longer volunteers so we know one time members however in very narrow circumstances to the approval of the superintendent up to two board members um ten participating observations and assessments with the recommendations of the peaceful administrator so on one hand you have very limited um participation these um were made at a bunch of different times with the composition of the school athletics commission had changed and evolved so very often um sometimes you can see that there's a disconnect between some of the decisions and others of the decisions but just know that over time you know they may kick in their circumstances and times change and they make different decisions yourself and always remember [Music] um in the board of education i will send you this in a pdf format several people have it as board members all of your decisions um so i would be happy to answer any questions that you might have i know that that's a lot of information but i hope that you found it um [Music] our um with your administration or any members members in your district um if you and i are in confidential sessions so questions [Music] if um [Music] um [Music] um i don't think it's working uh [Music] yet hello i'm action president association i just had a question uh regarding 7.4 is it accurate that a ta is taking over for a certificated uh staff position or is there going to be some um i guess some transfers to complete the whole process um you're talking about 734 yeah that person is two certified people in the room uh once our breakfast is coming out right but this ta it says it's replacing a certificated position correct there's two certified by taking one certified teacher out of the room rachel who's going to be the certificated staff member in this room so who's actually taking over for them so there is going to be a transfer yeah oh that's what i asked i said is there a transfer to complete the whole process all right um yes [Music] is [Music] yes approval the resolutions is outlined in personnel resolutions under middle and elementary school seven point two seven point questions or comments yes [Music] yes [Music] they compressed all the seasonings down so they could get some seasonings or comments can i get a role [Music] yes questions [Music] yes our next year's uh all right for our budget so can i just just update the board on anything that's as far as money to come into office um [Music] um um we're looking at right now we have four hundred and eighty five thousand dollars in excellent surplus [Music] here um and right now as we all know president trump might find the 900 billion [Music] um you know we got 4.9 million you know 5 million i would sit here and tell you guys and i won't be worried about my sweater campaign again for you know trying to get some sort of flexibility with that money um the other thing is um you know you have now what i can tell you so i don't want to move like us you have to practice that money the problem is it sees the pass through and then as there's a password when you get that money there's requirements for the title one money and it doesn't give you the flexibility that you need to cross your entire club the stimulus money they think that we got in december title one and the signal tax they're talking about right now the 1.9 trillion ties to taiwan which again it doesn't really help scenario worst case scenario which is going to be in the ballpark now i will do everything i can not be able to yeah i um let's you know want to caution everybody as best as they can you've been in this position before you have to allow me to analyze and do like and do what i do you know i'm pretty good [Music] yes 375 years [Music] for any and all discussions so um dr gallagher you know i posted three questions can you just let me i appreciate again this back and forth your first question was wondering what feedback uh foreign um your last question was um any updates on linkedin and have the questions that i've seen and have any [Music] you know that you know also here now is
