we you can you can raise them to whatever we were just trying you only are required to raise them to the reimbursement right so yes we it's costing us more right now to create meals because we have additional staff helping out food service right now because which is why our classes increase normally we would be well under that uh great so we wouldn't have had to adjust it but due to the extra stacking and additional like materials to ship out all the like the grab-and-go meals and all the kids were delivering those two that are remoting in the classroom just more this year do you have any idea how many adult meals we serve um in a month like last month we probably had about 100 lunches and maybe 35 40 breakfast it varies depending upon the menu and i mean we did drop participation on adults after we raised them the last time but our student participation is out of this world i mean we have more kids eating right now because it's free than we ever have so question then greasy adult lunch price to 4 35 when you don't breakfast for us to tuesday does anybody want to raise it more well i think if we raise more in the future hopefully the price goes back down to below for reducing staff coz relook at it when we start school next year we can come off of the summer food service program potentially currently we're good through december but we could like start it you know everything goes good starting this next school year we could go back to the national school lunch program and the reimbursement rates are different they're not near as high so all right all those in favor go down your computer from all those posts on your computer mike pass 7-0 move on to daycare center playground and i was hopeful we would have the information being to be ready to approve a bid we ran into a couple of snags on equipment and prices as well as just kind of putting the whole package together so we just won't do anything on this at all i'm hopeful that we'll have this ready for the march board meeting should have that ready uh so they can start breaking ground in april they still say that that time frame is good if we have a decision in march they'll be ready you know be able to get on somebody's schedule and they'll start breaking ground april pour some concrete put in a fence around the daycare player so we're still working on this project we'll look to approve it in march okay we'll move on to the hay burning bid or hay harvesting bid so this is the land north of the softball baseball fields right right and notice it's a little different this year we usually do the hay bid later but um doug rohr and uh jared hurr and eric uh derrick talk and thank you derrick so the crew out of the the bus barn they were kind of looking over this area and even had some conversations uh with uh phil and judy stookie as well because it's very close talked a little bit about a burning project that they wanted to do um we we think it's best because we're writing that hey the field hasn't been burned since i've been here and there's some things growing up in that field that just make the hay i guess less than desirable as well as we probably have some critters along that fence row between judy and phil's land and our land so with us having a new um nice new baseball softball restroom concession stand out there we didn't want our critters hopefully to head that way towards a warmer ground when when the weather gets bad so we thought it might be helpful you know to maybe get some i'd say some of the animals out of their little rodents or whatever so that's why it's kind of a combination hay and burning the fields that are going to burn it coordinate with doug and the guys out there burn it and then hang it coordinate with them as well so that's that's the difference this year and so that is is the family that lives out there to the north or they want to burn like north of the their house into that field also or what were they i don't know what's the coordination there right and i see a couple will come things when they may end up who knows they may do it themselves they may end up connecting with the people who are doing the burning for us okay and that's not part of any of this there's no agreement with them no it was just a conversation it was a conversation exactly and then uh you know they discussed obviously uh doug and his crew discuss with them about you know along that fence line you don't get because it's really not noticeable out there it's just that's just a feel that the grass and the hay is kind of growing up so there's again critters that nest and third winter so they would like to get rid of the critters we would like to get rid of the critters you know unfortunately about 40 years ago we invaded that area of high school and middle school as well as baseball fields we kind of invaded their home and so now we kind of have to so where wherever we give the bid to is going to burn it first with the coordinated effort is this something that we uh because of a school district need to coordinate with the fire department or is that something they'll take that is his job they'll take care of it all right good questions so a little different this year but uh emotion acceptability from scott burke bid in the amount of 30.

so cindy mentioned earlier about having multiple years of money for summer school that's why that sr2 goes through 2023 or through september 2023. so this position would strictly be to sanitize schools including over the summer where we can get that deep cleaning them any other questions this is an action item if you have a motion number a second all in favor there is a supplement so please refer to the supplement as well between the two we have six new classified ones certified one classified substitute we are starting to get into the season of people letting us know that not going to come back next year so we have eight resignations not all of those are end of year but some of them are we have two teachers retiring again season of letting us know um that they won't be coming back nine classified changes uh two extra duties and then we've got um the spring coaches that we are assigning and so we have 13 coaching positions um included i was reading over this and i'm sad to see some of the teachers that have read resigned um through the eight nine and ten um gosh those are some really great teachers some of them that have had all of my kids so far so that's that's a bummer we have you know and we have um in some cases they want to come back um you know it could be for uh i think one's having a baby and things like that in some it's just retiring um and that's good we're gonna you know we're gonna see some teachers that uh have been with us for quite a while leaving the district we think so any other questions or comments okay this is an action item if we could have a motion to prove to its personnel report and supplement i move that we accept the personnel report as stated thank you and supplement and supplement please and supplement thank you all in favor aye thank you item 9a the cvhs course description looks like it's going to be a tag table yes it is just in case one of us forgets all righty um so we're going to go over the course description i promise i'll be quick uh if you see it in red we're removing it if it's in yellow we're adding it um i'm just going to go over the significant changes most of the stuff is just little a's and the little stuff so um if you go to page 22 um and on page 22 is the pte courses uh we've made quite a few changes uh and it's mostly to the names so some of the names have changed so you'll see the red we're going to remove it the yellow were introducing a new name and so the ad names got changed the uh one of the classes that got added or changed is the agricultural mechanics and fabrication that's going away it's going to be agricultural mechanics ags which aligns with yavapai college and also just so that you know we've changed our second year what used to be abs 2 or applied we've changed that to interact introduction animal industry and we're excited about that um because we think that more kids will be interested knowing that that's the focus of the second year um the next one is draft and design uh it's gonna be uh called architectural drafting and design it's gonna be under that and that was page 26 and if you go to page 27 our network technologies is going to be cyber security so we have cyber security year one instead of uh it being called the yavapai college class it's going to be yavapai college yeah i had a question on that and i i was a little confused because cyber security is not working a proteinly different totally different thing are we shifting the focus of the content of these courses or is this just another name for what we've been doing all along well no it got added this past year of cyber security it's basically for the second year the first year is dealing with the networking and a little bit of cyber security and then the second semester they'll do the computer technician certification the a-plus that they've done in the past but what we're what we're looking at is adding in the cyber security to the second semester of the second year yeah okay but not that the first year will still be networking basically yeah there'll be a little bit of cyber security within that but it'll be mostly focused on networking on that computer technician um well that's where i got confused because to me the way it read we're substituting cyber security for the network and content i think it's the name of what yeah is using it we're just aligning ourselves from yavapai college okay so the content is is still a sequencing yes you're not working off into services yes yeah so the 110 is that's been hours all along uh what changed was the 101 and 135 yes so okay the next page 28 is the welding technologies and so that's something we've added to our school it was part of uh mountain institute but now it's part of china valley high school but it's still under ctec and the last page is page 32.

so i really feel as a committee that that 12-5 was really good from our regular donors so far so please shop on the virtual auction and miss julie cerulli asked if she could auction off a lunch with myself and a lunch with mrs cuevas so we told her we were going to be really sad if nobody wanted to have lunch with us but she said that she would cover it i said it could get expensive for you if you have to cover that much date with us so we're just trying to be creative and i think the staff pull together our community for the items on the auction so if you have not gone there check them out because they'll be open until next the 14th on valentine's day through sunday okay our enrollment update you can see here just an update that we are down by 44 students which of course we get they come and go we still had some new students enrolled last week and had some open enrollment applications and i think because the word is out that we are in school that parents are saying well we'll try to do open enrollments so we haven't been eager to approve them technology update so we had 85 chromebooks arrived late last week so our rollout will begin in the next two weeks we're still waiting on quotes for the new order to use the funds donated by the green valley computer club and we should be able to purchase 40 additional chromebooks avid is something you might or might not remember we kind of tossed around the last three years so the district is currently planning to partner with avid which is advancement via individual determination and avid is is a non-profit that changes lives by helping school shift to a more equitable student-centered approach so they train 85 000 educators annually to close the opportunity gap and they prepare all students for college careers and life a huge part of avid is that organization the planning the calendaring how do you manage your time so teaching kids at a young age to start to use their planners and balance their time is huge and also study skills which a lot of students who go to college say they never had formal practice in learning how to study and what do you highlight what do you um how do you seek out the essential information by partnering with avid we'll receive professional development a suite of resources and ongoing support to ensure lasting impact that maximizes the return and investment avid is not one more thing to do they work with schools to align with their goals to accelerate and enhance the work that is already happening so we had some of our teachers and mr montgomery attend a little mini avid course last summer and they came back and finding that the strategies are not new it's just how do we again reiterate and make them consistent so this all cut will be grant funded so it's one of the things that we can use for title 4 for teacher staff development to start to grow capacity through avid and our staff avid digital xp so again this is one of the staff development that's offered through avid like i mentioned last summer we had eight staff members attend avid digital xp and we had two six classroom teachers and two administrators so we will add new teachers this summer through our title title four year grant upcoming events on tuesday february 23rd we're going to have our virtual family literacy night so as you recall our teachers through 301 have responsibilities to a family night math night reading science so we are going to have our first virtual family literacy night so we'll make sure you have the information so you can log in as well and see how that goes so more information to come we are going to have an ell audit which starts february 25th through march 19th so our team will be working with ms sabo to be prepared for that also the title one virtual conference is taking place february 23rd and 24th and and that we will also be preparing for our title one audit so it seems like everybody wants to audit us at the same time but we'll just go forth and do okay so again just information only if there's anything that i shared that you'd like more information on that you would like to see um as an agenda item please let me know so you can make sure to put that on and again keep calm and sail on and happy valentine's day thank you yes don't forget thank you kylie okay good evening everyone good to see you all right so i just want to kick off with just saying that this week is love of reading week so promoting literacy and the importance of reading is what we're doing this week dropping everything and reading at the same time when we hear our morning announcement and this friday is the staff and students can dress up as their favorite book character so if you're interested in that and would like to come by just as your favorite book character you're more than welcome to come and do that with us superintendent rico did mention some of the staff trainings that we have been doing and administration we did the linkit training which we're very excited about because it is going to put all of our data into one database so we can then see as she had mentioned their progression over time all of our staff we did do the beyond textbook staff training refresher training it was really good training our teachers really loved it there's so many elements that and things that are available at our fingertips that we're excited about especially as we prepare and start thinking about next year and what we want to do and how we want to structure and framework our game plan for next year and all of the teachers in administration we did the map growth session 1 training that was last wednesday which was a really good training to go over and ask questions in regards to all of the reports that are available to us in the reports that we're sharing with our parents and families as well as analyzing together as a staff the second part of the training will take place from 1 to 3 p.m on wednesday february 17th and i will also provide the link for you all if you do have time and you'd like to log in and see we're finishing up our map growth testing this week we're finishing with those students that are on caliber learning and doing some makeup so we'll be done this wednesday we extended it because we wanted to try to get as many students as we could to get their growth and when we meet on the 17th they're going to be going over with us how we look at the progression from the fall test to the test that they just finished so it's a really important training for all of us to to see how we do go in and analyze and use all of the tools within the map growth system and up here is the testing that we did do grades k2 we're being tested on mathematics and reading third through fifth mathematics reading in language usage which is writing and all of the elements that are tied to writing and our digital students have tested as well and this is what we did go what session one for the map growth professional training we went under we discussed connecting map growth scores to student learning after the first test administration so understanding how map growth risk scores measure achievement and help identify students level of instructional readiness we were taught how to identify ways to use the macro data to flexibly group our students and create intervention groups and enrichment groups which is really exciting and access and interpret and apply the mapping data and analyze macbook data to support planning and instructional decisions so a lot of good conversations took place in a lot of great questions by our teachers session two that will take place on february 17th will then will be after our two test administrations as i had mentioned and it's going to help us build on those practices that use both projection data and learning statements to engage students in setting academic goals for themselves and understanding it whereas in the past it was just we'd give the benchmark tests and the teachers would talk with them but it's giving us that chance now to be able to talk together as teachers in administration and then have really meaningful talks with our students so that's what we're planning we have our binders portfolios everything that we want to put together so this is really going to help us exploring those reports and resources to support their growth and their progression our third quarter progress reports went out last week so the up to date grades were posted on parent view and student view and we have a lot of parents who are not sure how to access parent view so we have to send out some notices every parent wants their children are registered do get the parent view login information but should they need it again we definitely need to make sure that we're getting that to our parents and miss jenna and the office can help to do that but what we're really trying to do is parent view is an up-to-date process it's a platform where parents can go in and see missing work see where their students are at what assignments what their grades that they're getting in all subject areas and student view is something that we really want to start pushing out even more to our students to be able to access as well because they can look at it throughout the day and see if there's any assignments and it'll hold them accountable as well for their work and being able to have those conversations with their teachers if they're missing anything or to see where they're at our teachers are working on the dnf grade reports where they are going to be listing the students who do have d's and f's and they're pinpointing exactly why so they're stating is it because of quizzes is it because of missing work is it because of tests is it you know and making that plan with the students talking it over with them notifying the parents via phone calls emails they will be sending a copy home to parents starting next week a copy will go in the student binders that the students have and a copy will come to us in the front office to keep as well but it's to keep these conversations going because the most important part of our team here that we cannot forget is our parents so having that conversation together is what's going to help our students be able to be successful so moving from dnf grade reports we have a lot to celebrate as well with our honor roll we have honor roll which is our a and b students our students who are getting a's and b's and then we have our high honor roll which are straight a's so for first semester we had second grade nine students who are on honor roll and as you can see high honor roll 35 third grade we had 24 high honor roll 18 fourth grade 19 high honor roll 35 5th grade 23 for honor roll eight for high honor roll and middle school we have 59 for honor roll and 28 for high honor roll which is a total of 258 total honorable and high honorable students so that's about 54 of our students from grades second through eighth grade and we're really that's a big celebration miss jenna has been working on printing out working on those reports or excuse me the certificates the honorable certificate so that they can be presented to the students and giving them to their teachers and then they can celebrate in their classrooms and take those home to their parents yes yeah on the on the dnf report will we see the results on that of what percentage of our kids got that i mean that that was a big thing that was published in the newspaper as far as percentage of especially tusd students that were getting at least an f in one or more classes and i'd be interested on how to work and parry and i'm also very interested if we're seeing a difference between in-class versus virtual students yes so we will be getting that information to you thank you and mr latham he heads our our student services so a lot of the disciplinary issues that come through our office he works on them and i work with with them as well along with him so i just wanted to give you some data for this school year thus far we have the description here we'll go through a few of the slides for what we have this is when teachers input incident referrals so for aggression in second sixth seventh and eighth grade we had a total of 13 students who received incident reports for behaviors tied to aggression that have been dealt with parents have been communicated with and there's been resolutions to that there has been for harassment threat and intimidation one incident report and that was in eighth grade lying cheating and plagiarism this is one that we've been it's the plagiarism part and this has been happening in seventh and eighth grade we've been making phone calls to parents they've been working on a lot of poetry and the teachers were finding that they were copying and pasting sometimes some of the sentences or taking some words out conferencing with their students and asked us as administration if we could also speak to them so we have been speaking to them and also making phone calls to parents to just let them know the seriousness of plagiarizing and having the students come to the office and asking if they understand now if they've learned their lessons and they have they say that they have but so our teachers have been working very diligently that's really hard for them to go through all of their students work and make sure they've been um working with mr magayanas to see if there's a program as well that could make it a lot easier for them to be able to review work and see if there's potentially other violations of school policies for fourth grade and this could be you know um throwing a ball while in line and being unruly when they're supposed to be holding it when they're walking back from recess this could be i mean there's many there's incidents that have just occurred that that may have been disrespectful and we have dealt with them so there's been 21 overall technology and proper use six seventh and eighth grade incident referrals have been turned into us and that's the overall of seven of them when we have misuse of technology mr magayanes steps in as well the teachers have been using the program securely a lot so it allows them to be able to see all of their students screens while they're here that's cool and they can close their tabs they can send them notes directly in that moment that they need to get to work and do what they're supposed to be doing they can lock their screens as well and then we come in and speak to students so we've been working really hard on that just last week we got a message very quick from one of our teachers and we headed down to middle school to speak to one of our students about misuse of the technology and have that conversation with them right away and they get very surprised but they know that we're just trying to they have to understand that if they're using our technology they need to be using it with integrity and the lesson needs to be learned right then and there instead of putting it off so the security system is something really has been very helpful for us theft there was one incident that we dealt with that so since school has started because a lot of these things have been since we started back in august even virtually when we were dealing with some issues we've had 62 incident referrals for first semester then moving to our eighth graders who will be moving on soon to high school walden grove usually hosts a freshman day where we take our eighth graders and they're introduced they get to walk around the campus and they put on an assembly for them unfortunately due to covet this year that's not going to be happening but they are planning to have a zoom virtual meeting for questions and answers with the school principal and being having it for the students and parents and that will be on the 11th from 6 p.m it's starting at 6 p.m and they're also going to be recording it so we're going to make sure that we send a reminder and an email it's already posted on our social media page but we will send an email to all of our eighth grade parents to let them know and then course selection usually would take place here where the high school counselors would come on campus and they'd meet with the students and they would get to go over the electives and make choices as to what electives they're interested in again that's going to take place via zoom and it'll be facilitated by our continental teachers and that'll happen at 9 00 a.m on february 15th and that's just what we've posted what we're going to be sending out to parents kinder registration is going to begin in march and parents will be able to register online and we'll have a choice to make appointments for in person if they're having any issues and need our additional assistance with the online registration more details to come right now we're modifying some of the stuff on our online registration to make it a little more user friendly for our for our families and before i lead into questions i i want to thank a lot of our very generous community members who have given so generously of their time and the things that they give to our school it's it's it does not go unnoticed so for the rotary club of green valley we would like to thank them for their monetary donation for earbuds and computer mice for our students which is a great help and we're very thankful to them for that we'd also like to thank mr david burpee who has donated two laptop computers to our school and we'd like to thank desert hills lutheran church the social concerns committee who's donated knitted caps for our students and we want to thank all of them for their generous donations we're very grateful to them do you have any questions on your math stuff do you anticipate that whatever program it is that kids will get textbooks or am i just old school and everything's online now that's one thing that we've been discussing with superintendent rico and she's been listening to what in the discussion is are we including textbooks student workbooks and a lot of them you know that's one of the biggest concerns because we don't know how things are it's great to have the online program but teachers are also feeling that having those student workbooks is important too so those are the conversations that are mrs was another question but i did want to add that with the reports that we get for nwa map i was printing data of some students for the special ed report that i needed and just so happened that i spot checked a few kids and one of the students was one that happened to come to my office on friday for something else and i was like oh now that i have you here let's do a quick data topic let's talk about this so we had that conversation and just in meeting with parents today um having those reports readily available to be able to share you know our concerns with their academics and what they can do to help us have been very powerful so i'm just really excited about getting that data and having it available for our parents and students because it's eye-opening for our kids as well and discussing upcoming projects we are trying to get into business as usual we are going to start to allow our use of facilities to start march 1st we do have rotary coming in for birthday books it's been a whole year since rotary hasn't been able to give the students their birthday books so we've been waiting so we're going to set up here for primary and in the library for intermediate and have a schedule where the kids still come in a class at a time so we're very excited about that we are looking at student of the month so hopefully we will have a little slideshow next month with our january and february student of the month so that you can see them here on the screen thank you thank you very much okay i had a few questions on the financial report without craig i don't know whether i just need to put these in writing [Music] okay we have a couple questions for you sir yeah uh on oh i just have um on on the mmo account uh greg i just on the budgeted income and expense i just want to make sure i'm understanding what that exhibit is showing me because it looks like to me that the budgeted income i'm not really talking about actual income versus expense i'm really talking about the budget it looks like the budget is income is a lot less than what the budgeted expense is am i reading this wrong no you're not there generally the income portion of the budget really isn't as far as ade is concerned all that important um just as long as when we put in our bucket on the black electric form we put an estimate of what we are expecting as far as revenue to meet our budgeted amount so what you're seeing on that report is probably a reflection of i don't know how long ago it really okay what's the timing of our tuition payments to walden grove um they are they sent me an invoice this week i talked to uh the cfo from serena last week and after she could start giving those to me quarterly versus semi-annually okay and she had every intention of doing that this year but uh fell into the habit of her normally doing it semi-annually so we're going to try and start getting it quarterly from them okay and then go ahead and the the invoice for that well i i want to say i don't have an economy i don't have anything else from that but i want to say it was like 976 dollars and can change okay uh last question on on uh the financial report uh the enrollment stabilis stability grant how i'm assuming these are funds that the governor has in essence promised that we're not going to be penalized because of a loss of students or the number of students that go virtual is that correct correct the enrollment stabilization grant was from the federal government that the governor's office uh divvied out the districts across the state how did we how do we apply expenses to that that money we did we took there was there was a formula put in plate that we could use up to 500.

yeah okay to put to put a projector in here okay yeah i mean this is a good room to have it because we do a lot of presentations in here and it would be better to see you got to get a short throw it's got to go right up there because of all those lights so it costs a little more and then to install it was to do everything right was about 13. the reason we haven't pulled the trigger yet was uh joe give gave us a name of somebody else would get a quote for so matt's working on that and then i also think we'll be able to fold that into this grant that we're getting from the federal government because it's it's tied to our streaming that we're doing so it's part of like uh we're streaming because of cove i think we'll be able to tie into that grant thank you that was it kevin i do like having meetings in here too do you okay i don't know what you guys feel compared to the lighting i like the coziness of the library [Laughter] no i don't mind all right please have a motion to approve the consent agenda motion second yes yes yes superintendent's report all right item a is the monthly board policy review um i want to point out one because it's come up a couple times this year and i want to make sure you you all know this is part of board policy it's exhibit 12 uh 680.

is a new policy that discusses some of the privacy and security settings for the new technology and a question that we asked to be brought back was the whether or not students could bring their own devices and to kind of visit that whole thing there was some concern from some of our committee about cameras not being on on asynchronous days i think that's a problem in pretty much every district and then eight colon 30 we're going to bring back because we had some questions on the language um under procedures to deny future admission to school events or meetings so that one's coming back to us but everything else everybody was good with and we get way better attendance when we have them virtually we have discovered i heard several teachers mention and i've been to most of well not all of our schools four out of the five junior highs one of the high schools and i think eight or nine elementary schools so far and i heard more than one teacher say that they wished the kids had a picture of their ceiling fan around their neck on day one or two so they could recognize them i think that there might be a yearbook opportunity there in one or two schools to showcase their ceiling fans but um but yeah i can see why that's a an issue and when you bring cell phones when you bring chromebooks et cetera all right dr small and i think that they'll let me go to your part now you got to be a bouncer so how was it it was an excellent experience and i really just to reiterate what everyone's already said is just you know thank the volunteers we had so many volunteers uh so many of our 308 nurses were there it was uh it was just it was just an amazing uh everyone coming together you know to get this job done and if you if you like you said if you were there it was just smooth as can be you were in and out of there probably within 15 minutes at the like the longest so again thank you to the kendall ken county health department ran everyone that worked real hard the police fire emts everybody that were there i mean it was a impressive event so very well organized so thank you to everyone i also wanted to mention that last week was national school counselors week and i'd like to take this opportunity to recognize all of our school counselors for all the great work they do here in 308 and the impact that they have in helping our students reach their highest potential so thank you so much to all of our counselors and uh lastly this evening under uh under action the board will be asked to approve the budget reductions for the 2021 school year uh there are two changes from what was presented at our last meeting that i would like to highlight in regards to the idea of the four day in person and one day remote for secondary students for the 2021 school year that item was taken off the list that is being presented for this evening we will put together a study committee of teachers administrators and parents to study this idea and the findings of that committee will be presented to the board at a later date time and then the second item that has been removed is the item that was shared in regards to modifications to the goal program i had conversations with failed patterson last week she worked with the program director as well we'll work on ways of piloting this with students who may benefit from the idea but for again for the purposes of this evening it should be noted that we will not be changing the service delivery model for those students at this time that's my report for this evening thank you all right item six approval of the consent agenda can i have a motion to approve i make a motion to approve all items under consent including 6.1 minutes from the board of education meeting on january 25th 2021 open and closed session and 6.2 to acknowledge the foyer request received by the district second mr lightfoot aye mrs croner aye mr bauman aye mr swanson aye mrs doreal aye ms morgan aye motion passes 6-0 item 7.1 item 7.1 is financial statements does the board have any questions regarding the informational item can i ask one question that i obviously won't be able to get tonight but how much money did we actually save first semester by being closed down like i'm sure that you don't have that figure tonight semester yeah okay yeah um i can get your numbers all right very good no other questions regarding the financial statements presented okay item 7.2 is board policies for first read does the board have any questions in regards to the policies that are listed for this informational item you guys had said that there is a policy that's going back to the committee is that on this list no no i already pulled it okay item 7.3 is an informational item which is an annual item for this so christy go ahead thank you so a mowing bid was released because our current contract is expiring we did receive bids from 10 different contractors and the bid was released as a mowing on on as needed basis only our recommendation is to abort the bid to siebert landscaping who has a comparable experience and a district of our size and they are our current vendor so we would bring this back to the board at the next meeting for an action item who who siebert landscaping the bert landscaping yes so i have a question as it relates to one of the budget reduction items is this an increase in our current costs from mowing this is not an increase in the current amount of mowing that we contract out is it an increase in the cost the cost is increasing yes so the last bid is a 15 increase over the last time we did this and we're attributing this to the increase of minimum wage at that time minimum wage was eight and a quarter an hour and now it's at 11 as it moves up to 15 but 15 an hour by 2025.

it starts the intermediates in tier one and the middle schools in tier three and then the adjustment to that that we put out at the end of january as another option for your consideration is option 5b very similar to 5a with the exception of it it flips the middle schools go to tier 1 and the intermediates go to tier 3.

or 14 does remain the cdc's recommendation and they are saying that we can go down to 10 because the percentage of the the possible the possibility of spread does increase but maybe not as a significant level that would keep them from saying okay we agree to 10. um so that that's the debate we have to have internally with our plan is to do we move from the number of days we currently are which is 14. we did not go to 10 when this when the uh the cdc said that and even the state said that we could do that back in december some schools chose to do that as early as that time most waited to after winter break if they were going to change most i think still and i i'm saying this without having data in front i don't know if a survey has been done of all school corporations in the state on this topic but it seems like at least as i talked to my colleagues that most are still with 14 days this the third column kind of reinforces something that was first released back in december the middle one is new in terms of counting the contacts close contacts that way although it does use the information that we were trying to use way back at the beginning of the school year the supplies again just just some stuff to be delivered to us so again i would state that right now we are digesting that are not prepared to put anything into action with that at this point but wanted to get it in front of you to see what questions concerns comments or otherwise suggestions recommendations that you might be ready to to pose to us as a board so dr roberts um what what data or context was provided in the state release to to kind of justify a movement in some of these areas um specific data i i don't know nikki and kelly if you had some specific specific data from your okay so nothing for the nurses meeting on friday all those citing research from across the country of now the number of schools that have been open or or remaining open the the the seeming lack of of spread that occurs in schools uh the seeming um lack of contribution of the schools to the community overall of increasing per capita rates positive test rates that that seems to be the information or data that is being cited across the country as a follow-up how many cases can we say have been through spread in our schools so in our schools kelly i i will divert to you but but a handful if at the most track we've had some close contacts test positive so as if an assumption is made we would have it there but it is a it is a literal handful in terms of that number we now have and since you asked that question nick you just pulled up the positive test cases we have uh since monday august 10th first student day we're not 500 498 we have actually since friday when you receive this data as well we send that to you via email in the newspaper printed it this weekend we have hit 500 cases so we now have officially 500 cases as a school corporation with the 498 you see the number of students support staff members and teachers there of those groups since we have 11 500 students 299 is about 3 percent support staff members we have about 1200 so that's about 12 and certified staff members if we add administrators to that list with teachers we're approaching 800 so we have about seven percent so that's those rough percents in terms of the makeup of those populations uh as you're all well aware now we were trending well through fall break at 29 positive test cases end of october 82 since then 416.

the folks are having some struggles with the pandemic as we all know um so she is asking for the committee to approve this leave from her work for the rest of the school year as the contract does not stipulate this specific reason but it does allow for the school committee to approve that lead so we would be in favor of approving that lead for her thank you dr gefford uh to my fellow colleagues turn it over to dr gifford okay we're really pleased tonight to have dr dale who is the director of early childhood over at cushman and as we mentioned last time it's a little tough these days with kids in and out and remote not remote and but um all our principals are doing the best job they can to try to showcase what's going on in their school so if mr galashaw can bring her on we'll welcome dr dale to tonight's meeting she's coming [Laughter] no problem yep have all night hello hello hello dr dale how are you good how are you all good thank you for joining us this evening thank you for having me i'm excited excellent the floor is yours okay great thank you everybody can hear me okay great okay so tonight i was thinking um i'd like to share with you kind of what it looks like inside the walls of the andrew b cushman school i wanted to share with you through my very amateur video technology skills um an imovie that i created um put together uh very spontaneously it's an eight-minute peek into our integrated preschool and our kindergarten classrooms having the spotlight on cushman uh you'll notice many of the guidances that we've been hearing about and you'll see them in the works with three four and five-year-olds such as the social distancing and the mask wearing and hand washing the reduced classroom density even though we have all of these changes in our environment and it's different from what we're used to we've maintained a world of full of wonder and opportunity the video is going to give you a nice little glimpse into various things from morning arrival to different learning times it'll give you a little piece of looking at a kindergarten classroom with a hybrid model where you see students um from home zooming into their their classroom or google meeting through their classroom you'll see a physical education class and nap time how many times have we not got to see nap time at the cushman school you get to see it tonight um you'll get to see some of the expert experiential learning that goes on in preschool um and in kindergarten and how the teachers provide uh fun opportunities in the in the moment and are able to bring it into the classroom and tie it into the curriculum you'll see that with some snow tonight i've always said that if you're proud of your school you're happy to invite the school community in at any time so i thank you for the opportunity sharing this through this video kind of a day in the life of a cushman student from the early morning arrival to the dismissal here's just a few of the wonderful things that are happening in a normal school day our new normal school day we experience we create we play we learn we play some more and through all that we do we thank the support of our school community the cushman staff is a dynamic one with patience and creativity and our staff is dedicated to meeting the individual needs and to making learning fun i hope you enjoy it again it's very amateur this is our new little motto with our new school sign continuing with the bucket filling [Music] all right say good morning good morning [Music] can anybody tell me why you're standing on these x's does anybody know why [Music] why good job six feet apart thank you [Music] walking why perfect does anyone else need it up close thursday [Music] all right everyone at home wrote the word thursday as we select and now we're all going to look at the numbers and cooper is going to point to the numbers and we're all going to count so ready cooper here we go one two one can hit my counters three four five six seven eight nine now it's time for a circle and we're going to go to recess when we come inside we have letter stations it's a review week a o m n and we're going to have a second set with who there's molasses we're going to read a story how centers bathroom lunch recess rest we're going to practice writing our names today my friends recess bathroom snack and [Music] do [Music] and what letter is at the beginning of owl oh good job willow good job carter you're counting cars i just didn't go all the way up to the top [Music] now i yeah how much more you went all the way up to ten for you can put your finger in and stir it a little bit and mrs borowitz and i will give you a paper piece you can dump it on that paper please what did you make what did you make you could stop it did you make some snow yeah there you go and then you can let your animals play in it look at that [Music] oh my goodness that was [Music] here's another way to make snow with baking soda and conditioner and our favorite time of the day nap time [Music] it looks like a tail maybe it's a kitty's tail i think so yeah i think it's time to clean up toys we have toys away now get it get it [Applause] [Music] so i wanted to share that with you to give you an idea of kind of what it looks like like i said inside the um school so you can see how we're distancing the students and how we're trying to teach them about staying in their space when we have the duct tape perimeters um and you see that the many other children were able to wear their masks as the teachers do as well it's still you know it's it's become a natural thing now for students to wear their masks and um i think that they're they're doing a fabulous job and i think it's almost become almost a normal thing now and uh the kids are just enjoying enjoying coming to school and um today i was able to get into many classes that were remote and i was really pleasantly surprised at the number of students even at the preschool level that were remote today so i'm enjoying this very much the new position is in early intervention and working with early ed is it's been a challenge and it's a dynamic i truly mean it it's been a dynamic team uh these teachers are very skilled and very very talented and deal with many many challenges you know every day but um do so with grace and professionalism so thank you well thank you dr dale for taking the time uh to come on this evening as well as putting together that video i think it gives me a really great uh overall look uh peek into cushman school and everything that goes on there i cannot imagine um the logistics and just the routine building that had to take place uh throughout this year uh so no that was that was wonderful and i'll turn it over to my colleagues for any comments or questions from any of them uh yes mrs waite yes uh dr dale i just want to say that that video is fabulous i thought it was just such a sweet glimpse you know and it's been such a hard year you know and to see how resilient you know these kids are it's just you know in the hands-on projects that they were doing i mean i love the snow you know and you know i you know and learning about the conditioner baking soda i didn't know that so i mean just you know you could tell that they were excited to be there um you know and you know i think as adults we have you know we have almost more difficulty adjusting than you know than the kids do i mean they just you know they're they're clearly you know they're there and they're in school and you know and they're in their spaces and doing their thing and they're taking their naps and you know some of them are snapping and some are you know pushing their feet back and forth but it was you know my son went to cushman and it was just it was a beautiful experience a beautiful team there like you said um you know i makes me want you're looking at this i'm like i want to have another one to go back through so i really appreciate the hard work that you and your your team i know it's been a difficult year to come into and um you know it's it's it's fabulous to see so thank you for everything and to your staff you have a great staff there thank you thank you i do i it was very important for me for you to just as a group to see the the still the the wonder and the happiness and the um you know the the heartbeat of a preschool in kindergarten early ed environment even though we have all these regulations and guidances and things that we're doing i think that's that's the end result that we all wanted is to what can we create even though we have all these uh parameters to live within and i'm just very very happy of what's been created yeah you did a great job thank you thank you mrs waite anyone else mr nunes yeah thank you mr chairman yeah dr dale thank you very much that was that was excellent you know my i went to sixth grade at cushman school so you know seeing the school brings back a lot of good memories but you know and it was interesting and exciting to see you know everybody you know the students were engaged the teachers were engaged what color uh i was impressed with the letter o making owls how they were making the owls you know i mean i know you know here we go these are the students that are going to be you know junior and senior year at the dartmouth high school you know with all their awards from the act class and such but just how everyone was uh engaged you know really really makes it nice so uh congrats you know job well done and hats off to the teachers that are making this work absolutely absolutely thank you mr nunes this is amarillo yeah uh thank you dr dale a very sweet video um and i had to reach over to my this isn't mine it's my sons but shout out to the individual meeting the individual needs of your students with their oral motor sensory you know stimulation there in the video i captured that my question is have you noticed any glitches or has it been kind of seamless now that we're kind of been into this for a while um uh like you mentioned the early intervention so the transition has has early intervention been working with you and and um has it been seamless or are there still kind of issues around families whose children may qualify for services in the preschool setting but hesitant due to the regulations or has it been pretty decent yeah it has been very very smooth i want to say that um you know i wasn't here before to have something to compare it to but i can just say that um with the need to do virtual meetings that's really provided me with more time to be more hands-on with families so i might be meeting them in a meeting and they might be at their workplace and then i'm calling them later on at a time this mutually convenient for us you know at home and things like that um we've been qualifying students and students have been coming into the program and you know now the pace is really really picking up because this is the time of the year when that happens so um yeah i'm pretty um pleased there's a lot of questions that need to be answered before somebody wants to drop off their students to come into the building you know but now i have this i have this cute little video that i can show them and i was fortunate enough to have the uh preschool information nights coming up february 23rd and so we have a professional uh the local tv here is helping us with a video for that so it won't be my little imovie but it'll be more professional and that will give families a nice look too in in the building so i'm looking forward to having that as a resource for our families to see great and for those students coming in with special education needs let them know we have a special education parent advisory council um that is really open to hearing from new families so um you can send them our way i will thank you thank you mrs emeril dr jenkins yeah i mean after the video just like what my colleague said the video is great and i'm and i'm super you know grateful for everything that your staff is doing that you are doing and to meet the needs of our littlest learners um i'll follow up a little bit you know on what miss hammer all has said and i think the other the we're we've all been so focused on getting through this year and we're doing i think a great job the best that we can i mean it's become increasingly clear to me you know over the past dealing with my kids just reading looking around that how many challenges we're going to continue to have right because some of some of our little listeners like my husband read a story about how kids learn from people's facial expressions that's how they learn right social and emotional skills and many of these kids are not have not seen faces outside of their families um and so it's so important what you're doing now because if we weren't doing this right um there's there's there would be so many more challenges we still have a lot to face moving forward but i'm grateful that after hearing from so many other districts where kids are not in school and they're not able to have these interactions that we're able to do this for these kids because it's just seeing that video really you know brings home how important this is um so please do share thanks with all your staff from all of us about this important work i absolutely will i will thank you thank you dr jenkins yeah i will just sum it up echoing everyone's comments but wonderful job wonderful presentation dr dale um one question that i have is you had said you were able because it was a full remote day you were able to pop into some classrooms today to check in do you find that overall that you have a lot of students participating remotely on their off and when they're on their remote days yes we're having we're having really good success with students coming into kindergarten in the morning meetings and extended into the ela block and then the closing meetings but today on a remote day like today we really are challenging our preschool families to be just as involved and so today i was trying to pop into those classes and and the children were just so tickled i think to see me pop in because that's what i would do in the in the building right i'm in the classrooms all the time so um they were just happy to to see me pop in and we're following up with the families that um are having difficulty and the families that are having difficulty are the ones who um have uh child care issues um and um we did find one family today with technology and we'll take care of that this week it wasn't unknown to us until today so um we are doing everything we can to reach out to to our families and every every time i think we're getting more and more um involvement well that's that's wonderful i'm happy to hear that uh so please uh pass along our our thanks to all of your staff for uh you know a job well done i will thank you thank you for for coming over tonight great thank you everybody have a good night bye-bye uh next up on the agenda was originally the uh actually you can see under the presentations for anyone watching or had the agenda we were supposed to uh present the south coast educational collaborative we did skip over that we decided uh dr gifford and i are going to push that back to the next meeting so that'll be in person so next up under old business we have an update on the athletics program dr gifford thank you yes we have mr chris fully here tonight um just as a quick intro as you know we ran what we think was a very successful fall program um this uh sees we only had one little issue and we handled that well due to the real vigilance by the coaches and and the entire staff that works with our students so we were one of the few schools in the area that did decide to run that program and we were happy with that um i know we have some sports hockey and basketball kind of finishing up now but we do have some thoughts about moving forward for us athletic programs so we asked mr chris ifully to come on and uh update you on that and get the sense of the committee as we move into this next next season mr chris fulley thank you dr gifford and thank you to the comedians for having me tonight um as dr gifford said uh you know we've run off all in winter athletic seasons and in my opinion have been very successful with the implementation of our uh plan in our safety measures and modifications you know which we're finishing up the winter season as we speak we actually had two of our teams participating tonight in a conference tournament our girls basketball team defeated brockton high school here at home earlier this evening and our boys are playing in the first round at new bedford as we speak um so we also have our boys ice hockey team who is still competing they have about a week and a half left of their season they will not be playing a conference tournament because our our conference um only has three hockey teams uh competing and we also have the co-op with with uh bishop stang um you know it has been very challenging during the winter time in comparison to the fall because you know you've had those two holidays and christmas and new year's um and i'm sure that i i know there's a lot of um there was there was a lot of uh challenges that came along with those two holidays and we've seemed to work through that at this point now we're about to enter the fall two season uh which is scheduled to begin on monday february 22nd and that season would have unified basketball football fault cheerleading and boys and girls winter track again with the winter track the winter track would most likely be taking place outside for competitions because none of the indoor tracks that we would traditionally compete at whether it be the reggie lewis center in roxbury or um wheaton college is is allowing outside um groups to come in we've had plenty of dialogue with our coaches and we've begun to plan and um with with a lot of details that we have to cover we're going to host the individual program meetings uh like we've traditionally done the first two uh seasons that has been um you know very transparent as far as our expectations and uh things that we all need to follow now i know that's one of the hot topics uh per se since september has been um what we have our fan policy our spectator policy as you know at this point we have not allowed spectators or fans into our home athletic events that has stretched from both the fall and winter season now nothing can replace in-person fan and spectators but we've done our best job to come as close as we could um you know in lieu of in-person attendance we've streamed our varsity games uh through dc tv and that great relationship that we've built with them our varsity games in the winter time was streamed through mr peratti in his media program and they've done a great job and not only uh him but the kids who have produced the broadcast has been a great educational and learning experience now i do think we need to uh start looking forward um because as the the winter season is wrapping up and we're about to uh embark on the fall two season we currently in town uh are positive cases of covert 19 are back down to our pre-thanksgiving level our town has hosted multiple covet 19 vaccine clinics and today the eea released updated guidelines concerning the number of spectators allowed at an event it was more of a focus on outdoors but it's starting to trend in a positive direction which i think everyone is excited about um throughout the state of massachusetts now as far as fans go uh why i don't you know while i don't feel comfortable expanding on what the current eea guidelines permit at this moment i would like the opportunity to pilot a program which would allow two parents and guardians per participating student athlete uh kind of modeling the approach that we've taken for senior nights to be implemented moving forward now i believe that number movie uh would be an appropriate starting point and one that i feel is safe and manageable and it's something that we could definitely revisit before the start of our fall two season you know we did not have any fans within the first two seasons and i know that a lot of other schools have but we've never had that ability to put together our protocols and procedures outside of senior nights you know welcoming fans going through our screening process and allowing them to come to our events and i feel as though as we're moving and trending to outdoor events it's a great opportunity to possibly entertain starting that process now so that we can put our protocols in place um kind of comb through some of the challenges that we are going to um to battle in order to do this safe and appropriately mr christopher yes could just a quick question i hate to interrupt you but can you go over what your protocols are for your senior night like what are you doing for when you have your senior nights so so our senior nights have uh as i mentioned have been very successful we have um invited the uh parents and guardians of our seniors um to one event uh during the season so in the fall uh most of them were the very last game uh and then we happened to host playoff game um beyond the senior day uh for for the winter season uh we did we did do senior night for hockey a little bit earlier because um you know as far as the the timing of it and the rink availability and and i know that one of our home games is going to be during february vacation and and there's some difficulties that come with that we did our senior day a few games earlier but for for boys basketball we did it to the second to last game girls basketball we did it um the last game before the playoffs and it has been um parents of the seniors so on average they've been two um per individual uh they have come in we've checked them in um we get the listing from the coaches um beforehand i follow up with an email that basically explains soup to nuts what the expectations are and what the night's going to look like uh they do check in we go through our our cove protocol tracking questions um and then we have our ceremony and then there are the the parents are allowed to stay in our facility um social distance um throughout the competition and then when the competition is over they're asked to exit um right away thank you as far as personnel do does that require additional personnel in the um in the facilities and making sure that people are following uh proper social distancing yes um and again when we talk about um having the ability to do it now uh in preparation for the future i think it's very important that we see you know we're going to go in with a solid game plan that i feel very comfortable with but to answer your question they would be an additional one to two staff members that would um police per se the the individual fans the spectators that are at the event but again you know we we've been able to run senior days and senior nights uh very successfully uh parents have been very cooperative um and again they're just very happy that they have the ability to come see um their student athlete participate in person sure well thank you i i apologize for interrupting you i just came off the top of my head and wanted to make sure i asked those questions you have anything else for us or do you want to hear from any of our comm committee members no i i think that the two ter the two words of safe and manageable are are what should be at the forefront um but like i said uh with with the numbers uh trending in the good direction i do think there is a unique opportunity here to start that conversation and begin that process as we roll into the fall too which is an outdoor season mrs waite yes um so thank you first of all mr chris apolly and you know i know that you know we've been hearing you know as individual members quite a bit from um some parents who definitely want to see this you know happening for their to come and see their students um you know and it's good to see that our numbers are down and that you know like you know i agree with your judgment i think it's um it's a time to try it out i guess one question i have is maybe in this maybe goes back to uh mr kylie or dr gifford is well this you know when we're talking about hetlan it's a different issue because it's not within our schools um what kind of stress would this put on to our janitorial staff i guess that's something i had in mind is we have more parents and you know who are in our facilities as opposed to outside facilities um you know we know that we have more personnel that we are going to need to check in parents and kind of handle that but as far as cleaning protocols you know since we're still uncovered what are your i guess you know what are the thoughts around um that like i could just say that they're already cleaning these areas every day so um you know they're already spraying with the electrostatic sprayers in those areas every day um you know would there be some additional use and there thereby creating some more work yeah there would be but um you know i mean they the bathrooms that they're cleaning and the uh and the gym area would already have to be cleaned so it's not i i don't think it's prohibitive okay okay that's good to know thank you so that's all for me thank you very much uh mr christopoli i really appreciate it thank you mrs white anyone else dr jenkins i'll start off by full disclosure here that i am the parent of a senior who will probably start competing um in you know in the fall two season um but i i mean i i appreciate these efforts i know we've been hearing from a lot of parents but i still have concerns right our numbers are still quite high even though our numbers are down before thanksgiving right in the fall our numbers were 10 20 you know community members with covid um now we still have 150 a week so our numbers are pretty high um i'm not i wouldn't oppose what you're saying but but i am still sort of deeply reluctant and you know and also say this i hear what parents are saying you know i was an athlete all through college right my parents were often not able to come to my games i've been taken away in ambulances right people say this i'm okay right like i'm okay i have a high degree of confidence that even if we didn't right allow parents that our athletic staff our coaches and our trainers will give our student athletes the best of care and so i'm a little bit reluctant to allow this but i wouldn't say vote i guess against it if this is what the administration wants to do but i i would voice my concern because i do think we do have pretty high community spread and i know that all of our staff and teachers and coaches are taxed this year it's a hard year and to ask people to work more i just have a little hard time with that i think you know people could use some time off and particularly the not fun job of being masked and distancing police in an era where those sorts of things are very polarized right now um so i hope the community knows that if we do go forward with this this is right conditioned on their good behavior right if people come and they don't social distance and they don't mask then i think that we need to not do this and so people are going to be allowed in so long as they follow the rules and if they don't follow the rules then i don't think we should do this because i don't want to put that on our staff thank you dr jenkins uh mr nunes you have muted sorry as soon as i went to speak i noticed it thank you mr chairman yeah i totally in agreement with uh dr jenkins i had written the same thing as mr crystal fully and thank you very much for that presentation but you know i mean it's incumbent upon the parents you know i go back to talking about earlier if the student you know your child is not feeling well to keep them home it's the same thing here if you're not feeling good or something no disrespect you need to stay home because all it's going to take is one person and everything's going to be shut down and you know there will be no more i'll make i'll that'll be part of my motion if i may if we need a motion that if we have to shut it down once because apparent there's an issue it's done for the year it's as it's as simple as that you know everybody's got to police themselves and take care of themselves so but mr crystal foley great uh great job looking forward to the fall too uh hopefully uh the snow will be off the stadium field and uh you know they won't need uh pink uh footballs so that they can see them thank you john anyone else uh mrs amaral um i really don't have much to add i think my colleagues kind of said all of what i've been you know thinking um i want well i want to trust your judgment um mr christopher lee i mean i do i want to support that decision to pilot um you know i've been hearing from parents as well and i appreciate their advocacy i certainly can understand it um you know we have to make some hard decisions and not everyone is going to be happy and this might not need clarification um but when you say to are you meeting like two custodial adults or i'm just thinking of family like mine where we we divide and conquer often because we can't always be at the same place for the different needs of our family um and say a grandparent wants to go with a mom and they want you know would it be contingent upon that sort of a decision and obviously we can't really presume that each family member has a two parent household and that sort of thing um will those will those decisions be made on an individual basis or do are is it cut and dry so there were parents guardians so there was um there were a couple situations that there were individual basis in the fall where you know student athletes did have parents and step parents which which again for a senior day a senior night event is extremely important to to honor and respect what my recommendation would be in this situation would be your parent parents or guardian make it very clear thank you so i i was just wondering how many games are left that are home games of any of the sports the seasons right now as we as we sit right now there are two two games so i i would i would propose that we we do a pilot very very very um strict parameters like you were speaking about um we've obviously been talking about this a while and we understand i mean we've been pretty adamant about no no fans and as you all have taken the emails and the questions etc um for the betterment of the program and trying to keep our kids playing and safe but to dr jenkins point if we if we were able to try a game or the last one or two games as a pilot and and continue on and if it goes well and then prepare ourselves for the next season um but as mr noon said if something happens and we have pushed back or anything then we can always push pull it back again [Music] that would be my my thinking that's the nudes yeah thank you mr jim it just came to mind um are we going to have like a sign up mr crystal fully so you know how many are coming or i mean i'm not trying to get into the weeds here but you know i know the reading the uh mia rules and regulations i guess it's 45 students so the most you're going to have is 90 parents type of deal but are you going to have some type of a checklist that says you know mr and mrs smith you know are here for for johnny and that type of i don't know so um when you're referring to the 45 that that would be for the fall too for outdoor for say uh before the number 45 would be the maximum uh participants uh allowed to suit up during the football game um and again being outdoors and there but if you're talking about so to answer your question there's multiple directions to go with that there there is the the simple uh soliciting names and creating your lists there are schools that have created um different types of google forms that they have sent to families and families have filled out and it kind of dumps into a spreadsheet that you could print out and be ready for the check-in um so again i mean what i would what i would do and what i feel is most likely the best situation um is to do it electronically now having said that we could do it one day and it doesn't work out well and then you go back to the paper form so these are the types of situations that i'm talking about that i much like to iron out well before we transition to outdoor activity where now you have a situation where there's even more individuals that are attending and eligible to attend an event and you really haven't gone through those i certainly don't want to call them growing pains but um you haven't gone through that process yet you know the senior days went great they again you know the most we had was individuals um that attended you know you do that in in the rest of our fall our winter season and fall too that number is is going to go up pretty high um in comparison to the senior days so those are those are that's a great question um that's how i would go and approach it to begin with um i'm pretty confident that it would work efficiently but again if it doesn't uh it's a very easy adjustment this is weight you're muted okay mary uh mr christopher have you checked in with some of our like neighboring districts who have allowed um spectators and how it's going there i mean i i guess i kind of get you know revert back to you know the idea of the senior night so we just have the senior parents and i think i was i stepped back a little bit as i'm you know listening thinking football and the number of parents that we're talking about you know bringing in all those parents i almost feel i mean first of all i'll get back to what you know mr newton said earlier and i think you know look tonight let's move on the pilot and then revisit completely from what we've seen for and not make a decision for fall too that's the first thing i would think but i also am wondering maybe you know if we take a baby step and say we allow seniors i am worried about you know when we start thinking about such a huge squad and that many parents congregate together that really does you know i understand the seniors i i just i have you know i i yeah i just i'd say that that those numbers really concern me so i guess i'm curious what other schools are you know what they're thinking how that what kind of success what kind of issues have come up as you've been talking to other deities so so so that's that's the loaded question so remember in the fall we made our decision of no fans and yeah all the other schools in the conference jumped on board with us and then they jumped off board and created a very unfavorable situation for us but to our credit in my opinion we have been the most consistent school and school department in this area when it comes to this topic and subject right um for the winter time the league did decide that as far as with basketball that we were not allowing uh home or away fans uh with the exception of senior nights um and we're just about again to complete those seasons and it's something that none of us in our schools have done uh hockey is a little bit different we're again we we have three schools um within our conference that we play we play a lot of non-league games um you know in our conference we have bridgewater raynham who who does allow fans uh we have we have durfee that when we played them did not um a lot of the opponents that we do play do allow spectators and fans um again albeit controlled uh so there and again if you're looking at a lot of the different schools in the area and to your question i will compare just for this purpose but i certainly we we make decisions that's in you know the best interests of our student athletes and programs and schools but um in the surrounding schools and conferences many of many of the schools have moved forward with some type of fan experience outside of senior nights so thank you everyone for sharing your thoughts and concerns or just uh general discussions uh myself uh you know i'm reluctant as well um my suggestion would be that we proceed cautiously um because part of me is i really part of me is not for all this but i can certainly understand i'm not sure maybe we just expanded a little bit and not to every game i don't need to put a wrench in the wheel here but maybe we look at expanding it somewhat by allowing another day or another night besides senior night but not fully opening it up to every game and i know that we're talking about a very small amount of games is that right mr christophuli correct it would it would be two nights or two two games i should say in addition to senior night no senior night has already taken place okay so i don't know what the committee's pleasure is um if you want to take a vote or um mr nunes yeah uh i'll make a motion in a second mr crystal fully dumb is it are we playing how many home football games are we going to have uh we have two scheduled with a possibility of a third i think and i'm going to make an assumption they're going to be like saturday afternoon versus friday night friday nights they're going to be friday nights okay i figure with with with not having to worry about triple e for the first time in a number of years um we might as well take advantage of that because there's no guarantees in the fall that we won't be under those restrictions again okay i agree uh dr jenkins i just want to point out i don't i don't think we voted on this um for the for winter sports um so i don't know if we need a notion i know mr nunes is is proposing that um i i i'm not sure what we would be voting on at this point in time because i'm not are we voting on all parents like to mrs wait's point i'm i'm i'm concerned about having that many parents um you know maybe for football we want to pursue if it's just two games that's you know just the parents of seniors it just doesn't feel quite i guess i would say ripe yet like i don't know that i feel ready to vote i know mr chris fully is proposing to sort of go out and look at this and develop this further um i'm just not certain that i'm ready to vote on anything now certainly mr nunes is that's his prerogative to make a motion but it feels like there's a lot of unknowns right now about how this is actually going to work so what do you what are you proposing doctor jenkins so we just allowed mr christian to fully to we didn't we didn't vote for winter last time and we the administration moved forward on the policy that that they recommended okay thank you uh mr oliver can i make one quick comment uh yeah that's the news brought up uh football and and again i mean that's something that's something that's going to be discussed within our league to try to get some common ground um for football because again you know they're it's it's a sport that has the most participants um on both sides and again we'll have some certain restrictions that we're going to need to follow there's a lot of variables not as far as game play itself but the actual running of the event and the responsibilities that come with it so uh the conference is looking to get together um and to kind of carve out a path that we feel is um you know safe and manageable moving into that season thank you mr christopher uh mrs jamerrill um yeah and just to clarify this isn't just a football thing this is unified this is all fall two this is unified basketball however that's indoors this is cheerleading competit i guess competitions or something um and then a cheerleading competition can't happen be a game game day and again in addition to your 45 roster players you have your cheerleaders also that are added to that and then winter boys and girls track which yes doesn't okay numbers on track may be even bigger than the numbers on football right i mean if you think about what the track team looks like yes but the the track the track team um what we've talked about in the conference is doing virtual meets so that you don't have two large groups at one site kind of we don't have swimming but that's what this the many schools in the state who host swimming have done mr christopholi um yes what are your what are your thoughts about just doing seniors is that you know senior parents and kind of keeping that rather than opening i mean what do you what do you see as the advantage of opening maybe advantage is not the right word but what are your thoughts around just inviting our senior parents in for the fall to season well i mean it's it's it's difficult to go from zero to whatever is next and i agree with you when you when it's more of a kind of slow drip per se that you're looking for um the advantages of uh you know allowing each participant to have two uh parents there you know your maximum is probably between 38 and 40 percent maybe a little bit lower depending on if two parents are gonna go or one um when you're talking about seniors you're looking at the number of uh you know 12 to 14 per se so i mean when you're looking at the size of the area in which we have um there is there is room to allow two per okay and when you're looking at what this could evolve into in the fall too that's why um we wanted to take not that huge leap of faith but the halfway point um because you're talking about half rosters so you talked about a larger area of the rink um you know like i said we had our senior day the other day and and it went smooth um so again i mean in both cases uh like i said i i went right for the um each individual player because i think in the facility we can we can manage that situation um and it would give us you know a little bit more than what we just came to the table with which we just allowed senior parents only in the last event and are you i'm sorry to jump in again but are you and what about your coaches how are they feeling are they in support of this that's one thing you know um are they do they feel confident moving forward are they hesitant and not you know you don't speak about you know individual coaches but just in general coaching staff what are their thoughts no i mean it's it's a very different environment when there are no fans and spectators um there is as many positives you can bring up and there's many negatives that you can bring up uh i'd be i'd be lying to you if you go into an event with no spectators and you have the same kind of i hate to use the term juice coming into the game as you would with fans um you know again um that's been you know very different um you know it wasn't as different in the fall because there were a lot of fans that stood at the fence so that many of the individuals sports outdoors parrots still got to see every single game that was home that their student athlete participated in volleyball obviously didn't have that um experience uh basketball has not to this point had that experience um you know so so again i mean i think from a coaching standpoint i've gotten um kind of a mixed bag of reviews of some of them really like that excitement that fans do bring in um some have commented saying that you know in some ways especially in the high intense parts of the game the kids are a little bit more manageable so again or anything in between so so unless someone else feels differently you know why don't we allow the administration to proceed cautiously um my my other question that i had mr christophuli was the we're allowing with this proposal we're not looking at visiting teams bringing in parents correct just just just home dartmouth parents i guess my personal feeling would be is to let's see how this goes and i'd love for you to come back to the committee after after a couple of games yeah i'd see you dr jenkins give me a minute please um and come back to us and see you know present let us know what your thoughts are you know because if you're looking at this at the big picture i do think that at some point we need to start looking at some type of expansion because let's face it we don't know where we're going to be at come next fall i i honestly don't think we're going to be normal next fall when it comes to sports and when it comes to school that's that's just my opinion and my reality um so i think we need to you know t slowly tease this out and let's see where it goes but also in the meantime also work towards coming up with some type of workable scenario for what will happen next fall um so that's just my just my thoughts on it dr jenkins you know i just want to acknowledge that we're getting a lot of emails that kate is forwarding to us from people who are following along that it does feel unfair to the to the fall into the winter sports families um and and i see that and to be honest i'm not you know particularly comfortable with having spectators at all i've said that um but i do think right you know dr gifford had asked would it be possible for some of the the the winter sports that we have on going now that i don't know i guess hockey has another game or two um it feels grossly unfair because their numbers in the fall were much lower than they are now right and parents were told you can't go to games and now our numbers are much higher and we're saying well i guess it's okay and so i understand that and i acknowledge that this is a really difficult situation um you know again i'll say this i'm i'm the parent of a senior this sucks all around right excuse my language for these seniors it really really really does um and you know i don't want to say well you know everybody else got a bad deal so we should continue to give a bad deal but if we're gonna try to make it right for some students going forward then maybe we should try to do that as soon as possible to dr gifford's point um even if we do say i think we have some hockey games left even if we do it for parents or seniors i don't know i mean i i feel these parents frustrations i really do uh mr nunes yeah thank you mr chairman i know i won't make any motions but my suggestion would be to let you know mr you know the administration of mr fully figure out what they want to do for the you know last two last couple of hockey games and see how that works out again going back to what we've all talked about is you know the parents having to police themselves and such because if there's an issue then you know the past half hour with all due respect that we've spent discussing this great conversations is going to be famous because we just won't let any parents in you know for fall too so i mean if you know they're able to let some parents in for the seat for the last couple of hockey games on a trial basis to see how it works and that way mr christofoli and his staff can you know have you know quote unquote any bugs in the program you know that they're trying to do they can get worked out and be ready to go when fall two starts i'm fine with that and and fast forwarding to the spring it in the spring it's very it becomes an unmanageable situation when you have three baseball games going on two softball game possibly going on obviously the stadium is is very much easier to manage because it does have um you know a surrounding defense per se that you can control the facility uh a gymnasium has that capability a hockey rink has that capability yeah if i might if we could um i absolutely would shannon just mentioned about the fairness or not fairness we feel it this is why it's been such a difficult decision um i think in the beginning you know we were once again trying to be as extremely cautious not knowing where we were going with anything what was happening etc um seeing how well run the athletics program and i'll even mention the music program at this point because those are you know big programs have been going um i'd like to have more conversation with mr chris fully uh in the next few days and mr kiley and and if you will um if once we make a decision if we can just notify you that we've decided that we're going to try one game or not one game and then come back with those results but i'm still i'm still leery i'm listening to what you're saying that the fairness are people feeling slighted we certainly don't but again it's an unnatural year it's an unusual year we're trying to every decision you know is is difficult whether it's even the things about going remote not remote a virtual not virtual everybody is feeling inequitable inequity or unfairness along the way but so if we can have a couple of days and really talk about it more i i really trust the program and what they've been doing but i don't know if we can move forward and and start to make it better i would feel comfortable with that but thank you dr gifford now i i agree let's you know let's allow you folks to to tease this out and see where it goes um no matter what this has been the year of no matter what our decision is the school committee and his administration is going to be 50 of the of the people are not going to agree with our decision my daughter played fall volleyball i didn't get to see one game of hers so i'm one of those parents folks i get it i completely get it but one way or the other we're gonna get emails whether they're good bad or otherwise this is just that's what i'm talking this year up to we make the best decisions we can with the information given to us at the present time um so i think we've spent enough time on this issue i want to thank mr christofoli for his preferred wonderful presentation for putting this together i i'll all i will say is that uh you know take your time do your due diligence um you know and if we can get this in on a trial basis with a few hockey games that are left with maybe more seniors uh parents uh i'll leave it up to to the professionals but i would just like at some point dr gifford if you could come back uh with mr christophule to report on um how this went thank you very much have a good night andy thank you you talks too thanks andy good luck not easy no unfortunately it's not it's just been the year yep next up under new business superintendent's update dr gifford all right i have a few things to talk about and uh mr kylie is going to update us as well um miss way asked last time about the vogue numbers so we do have that um just at present time which was just updated by miss genthner um we have 322 students at vogue and 67 of those are ninth graders just to kind of give you a sense of the number that and that's been about the pattern 75 or so a year that moved from the eighth grade into the ninth and we have only 18 at bristol aggie um as of in january just just recently thank you oh you're quite welcome um just a few things going on the normal stuff we still have project time for our new teachers running and um they just met recently and had a great meeting mr gill um met with them also and so miss uh oliveira is still running that program and doing a nice job bringing folks in to talk to them and help them and keep them connected to the district we are waiting to hear on the if we're in the second round of the engineering grant from the project lead the way as you recall we've we're involved with project lead the way for our computer science we're continuing with that and adding more resources more professional development for those teachers the two computer science teachers that we have but we're still waiting now to hear on the engineering uh grant if we can move forward with that our 7th and 8th grade teachers have been working with umass dartmouth and wpi it's some researchers from that we're working to integrate computer science into our curriculum they're hoping to get a grant from the national science foundation i know dr jenkins knows about that and hooked us up with that and um this aloe vera has been meeting with those teachers and those researchers and we'll see what happens i do want to do a shout out to mr peratti once again in the dhs media i think i sent you a link for one of the upcoming shows they have the superlative show coming up but he has a new new group of kids a new crop of kiddos that are working with him but once again he he just he's here tonight of course he's not failed us on anything we ever ask him to do um and he grabs his sidekick mr galashaw and grabs him along so i just want to give them a shout out once again um gene sharon our director of nutrition has let us know that another grant was given um to us for food services mr kylie might have more to say about that ten thousand dollars over at the quinn so we'll keep getting those funds to help us prepare food and give meals out to our families you received the today i sent you uh from patty keen the deca students and how well they did there's too many to list so i'm not going to say anything but congratulations to all of those students that placed and we'll be moving on and did such an outstanding job and i do want to commend those teachers for continuing the program our students always do so well with the deca students the i think uh last week i sent you the an edition of the elementary curriculum chronicle that mrs oliveira has been working with with the cia team and i thought it was awesome so i hope you had a chance to look at that but the second edition is going out uh this week and it just really provides a lot of resources and updates on what's happening with the elementary curriculum and uh the last thing before i'll turn it over to mr kylie is once again we met with of course mr micho this morning and as you know we had the saturday clinic and we it just went phenomenally he first of all he he um couldn't say enough about the help that the dartmouth public schools is offering secretarial help nurse help uh technology people were there um they did almost thousand a thousand vaccines this weekend and um up from about 300 he said no clinics really have attempted that number i've received emails from folks tell just out of the blue telling me what a wonderful experience it was professionally run organized and i think the most important thing is a couple of testimonies if you will from one of our nurses and and actually ms genthner as well um what a wonderful feeling it is to be working with the community and when you like miss uh nurse said you know when she walked in it was like this sense of i don't know just camaraderie and collaboration and all the departments are there the police department and um obviously the board of health and us and just all kinds of folks that are just doing the best they can to help the community so obviously there'll be many more clinics coming but um we once again really appreciate the work that we've been doing with the board of health and mr micho he's been fabulous so that's it for me and as i said i know mister um kylie has a couple updates for us as well thanks dr i um just wanted to let you know that i haven't forgotten about the budget um i appreciate your flexibility and and uh we originally were going to do our presentation tonight as you'd imagine there's uh an awful lot of uncertainty in this budget process and a whole lot of other things for us to focus on on a daily basis besides this but it is you know one of our most important tasks obviously and it helps support kids um you know so we we are ready to to move forward at the next school committee meeting with a presentation and our our proposal you will all have that this week because next week is school vacation so i will get it to you this week so you have it in advance of the next school committee meeting and we'll move forward you know with that there's there's certainly some holes we don't have a lot of information we have you know the governor's initial budget proposal um but we have no more information from the state side we really don't know where um you know where we're going to have to go in terms of restrictions and and you know what sort of um what sort of precautions we're going to have in place the in the next school year obviously so there's a there's a lot to think about with this budget but we've given it our best shot we're in a pretty good place with it we have a budget subcommittee meeting on wednesday um and that will be the first public discussion of uh of this and then we'll we'll bring it forward on the 22nd to all of you anything else uh mr kylie oh i just saw mr nunes go ahead go ahead mr nunes yeah thank you mr chairman uh i apologize i should have got talked to mr kylie about this earlier today but we were just talking i know we had the furnace issue uh at part of school uh i'm just wondering what we've got for a funding source and you know everything and i'm just wondering if we should put uh town hall on notice that we may be coming for a reserve fund transfer to cover the cars so what mr nunes is referring to and for the benefit of of those who don't know we we had a heating issue at the potter school two boilers went down and uh had to be replaced so it was a big task i really can't thank rick ferreira enough he he led the whole effort had somebody on site immediately to help with it he dismantled the boilers himself and it really it was a pretty seamless operation considering we went from uh not having either of those boilers functioning to having in basically a day um two new boilers in place hooked up ready to go uh pumping heat back into the building so it was an awesome effort in terms of money uh you know we as i had mentioned in my my update to you folks we're looking at a couple of uh a couple of alternatives in terms of um you know how what we might pursue one is insurance one is uh although they are not under warranty this is highly unlikely it was highly unlikely that this would happen to boilers of these of this age so um these are excellent boilers very high efficiency we've we replaced them less than 10 years ago they should have lasted another 15 years um you know without any major problems so you know we are going to pursue that with the manufacturer we'll see you know how that goes um and then beyond that yeah we have uh you know a couple of a couple of viable options we do have some money built into the budget for maintenance of you know our equipment um this is fairly expensive um and you know it would deplete a lot of those funds so i we definitely could pursue a you know a line item a uh reserve fund transfer if we need to uh but i'd like to have an idea really of how much the net cost of this is going to be before i you know before i move in that direction thank you mr chairman thank you mr kylie you're welcome mr nunes uh thank you for your presentation mr kiley on another note too i think it's important that um we just recognize mr kylie the um we had some issues with staffing in our food service program at the high school and we looked to some community uh to some community vendors to step up but i think it's important that maybe we recognize them so i'll let you uh just talk a little bit about that yeah we we you know everything is most everything is coveted related these days and we had some staffing issues that were covered related that uh got to the point where we weren't quite sure if we were going to be able to serve lunch at two schools we we managed staffing was been uh really amazingly flexible in the food service department they've uh gene sheridan is uh you know working with those folks and they've really stepped up and the quinn school was impacted and the staff there did an amazing job getting everything ready for for kids and the high school was the other building in which we ended up bringing in jersey mike's and uh and domino's pizza and our staff was not it was not staffed by our normal cafeteria workers it was volunteer staff anybody who could help um and uh and it worked out it's worked out pretty well it's it's uh it's still going um you know through this week but uh but we made it happen and we've got food for kids and uh and it's good food so it's not cheap food that's for sure um so there's a cost there is a cost factor to that and it's uh so that's a that's an issue but but yeah we made we've made it happen and uh gene really really stepped up right away with uh you know working with me and just trying to figure out okay what can we do we've got to provide something to eat and we have no one i think it's fabulous jim or mr kylie just the the community effort the you know people you said volunteers coming together there's a lot of collaboration that takes place not just with food service but day-to-day operations uh to make keep schools open and keep the dartmouth public schools open so uh thank you for your report mr kylie thank you um i for the uh report of the chair i will just add a couple of things i thought it was great um i know at our last meeting uh we uh mr tebow talked about our our new our service dog and i can i i love seeing how wpri has picked him up uh all he's got a lot of media attention uh the uh the service dog so it's been uh it's been a pleasure to read some of the articles and hearing what the kids have to had to say about the about them so um no i think it's a wonderful program and i'd love to love kind of a mimicky over here right so we have another another set of dual enrollment agreements for the next set of courses we're gonna have more curriculum developed for this next set of courses um and one of the things i kind of want to mention on here is seek i'm i still need to seek more and i need to tap into more of our district resources to to find more local partnerships um and this is not even just for this program right now but for my entire department and our business department at the high school where we need to find more work-based learning opportunities for our students students to go out in industry students do learn on the job and this is actually a requirement for perkins five is that we have those opportunities for our students and then furthermore in the fall of 2022 there's going to be the final courses for the years 2324 proposed so there's a ton of stuff happening the machines are here but there's a lot of curriculum work and a lot of things that are happening on the back end and really kind of one of the next big things that besides the the actual coursework and all the nitty-gritty with that is the the business partners in town and local and locally that are willing to work with um with me and with our students and i need to again tap into some of our local resources for them and i am done with my presentation and i would love to to entertain any sort of questions and anything that we have here from from everybody yes yeah yeah first of all sean thank you for um sharing with us your enthusiasm always always uh thrills me because this is something that's really hard for me to get really excited about but i'm glad to see that there's somebody who does get very excited about this so i understand with this um this new machinery that you are developing courses for the future and i think it's great that we're having uh that dual enrollment uh course or possibly courses with nagatok valley um what do we have right now at cheshire high in manufacturing what are like the prerequisites to all this good stuff that's coming up so right now if you look at what we would code in our manufacturing pathway classes we would code our one of our cad courses and the research and design class but what we've had to do and i think we mentioned this a little bit of the last meeting is some courses needed to be removed in order for our resources to shift into this new manufacturing world so what we're doing is we're recoding our engineering cad class back into an engineering pathway and this own manufacturing pathway is getting its own computer-aided drawing and drafting and computer and manufacturing uh programming course so when it comes starting for next year and this this these two courses will be the truest sequence of manufacturing classes and then two more in the following year and then a a full year in that third and that third sequence of 23.24 so this is all starting off like we are all we are all in the grassroots efforts of this right now great thank you i hadn't remembered um that from your presentation before but thanks for reminding me thank you tony sean this is a great update i uh i am one that can very much appreciate this and get very excited about it that being said um if you can produce performance car parts i got all kinds of projects for you you produce drawings my students can produce some stuff for you i'll try that's right that's some things of mine but that's awesome to see i wish uh i think if i'm not mistaken maybe it's wishful thinking i thought i i thought you someone showed us pictures when the rigors were there last year yep and that was pretty awesome to see very if i remember correctly yeah so they they came in it's actually really fascinating how they do this like though just to see these these two gentlemen work and what they do with a forklift and chains and like the units that i teach in my mechanical advantage units like what they're able to do with just two guys and some very expensive and heavy precise equipment um is pretty fascinating what what they came back was um the little parts and pieces on this mill that's not something that they do so that's how it fell back on me but the big giant base of it you know they're moving in and they're they're doing they move the lathe in the room and they did a lot of good stuff so yeah their craft is is what they do man it's like when you hire movers and they don't touch a wall you're like how'd you guys do that yeah they're so precise about it too so it's awesome to see but anyway congratulations finding everything set up and up and running and i'm sure uh students are excited to see that stuff there and music yeah they're very excited and it's it's unfortunate for some of these students who are leaving here this year that this is really all for future programming and that's like the the thing that's tough for me too is like wow i want to be able to run right now with this in my classes sure it could fit into some units in some of my classes but i keep looking at is like i stabbed at a grant to build a program for the future and that's what these things are here for is the level after the next level for one i mean it's not not like we're going to wait to use them until then but that's that's when the students are going to be proficient and you know walk right up to them and use them i think it's lost in a huge step for uh for our kids so thank you for getting this all set up and working through i know it's uh you know it's extra hours and time so thank you thank you i think um it's sean thank you so much this is i'm with tony um so i just how many kids what is the enrollment looking like and what kind of trends do you see um i know it's hard because yeah you're on a different uh it's just a totally different plane right now than normal but yeah uh yeah i was just wondering what yeah how many are you how many do you how do you count the kids i mean how many kids are in the class how many kids what kind of trends are you seeing there all right so our enrollment for this year is very similar to our previous year's enrollments department-wide um sometimes we're higher in some courses than others but you know we typically have around the same number of students for these manufacturing courses they don't start running until next fall yeah and of course the course signups are digitally happening like as we are speaking right now so i don't i don't have a piece of data that says how many kids have in decide to roll in these courses they still need to sit with their counselors i also have to say that there were a couple opportunities that got um taken away because of like snowstorms and stuff i had a meeting that was supposed to be with the school counselors to discuss my new courses and that got cancelled and it didn't get rescheduled and i was we're supposed to go to dodge with the same type of thing and that got canceled not rescheduled it was all in these it keeps happening like these tuesdays so i i really hope that people are getting the message of what's out there for us to take for next year um it seems like the course selection during a pandemic also got hit with a blizzard and i i just i hope that doesn't really trickle down into my enrollments for next year but if you want like a perfect picture of where i'm starting off next year i mean i cannot take more than 16 in this lab space covid rules can't take more than 12 in this lab space um you know if i have if i have 10 kids who sign up for the fall course next year i'm i'm ecstatic and we're you know we're running this course and those 10 and those 10 students are initially right into that advanced manufacturing or that principles and manufacturing certificate now remember if you are seeking that entire certificate you got to finish the whole program right or a sequence of that program and if you're starting off as a senior you're not going to have an opportunity to finish that but at least you can start it and you can still earn your dual enrollment credits through that through that institution and then how many credits total to get that that certificate that completes high school credits or uh college credits in college the initial one is 11 credits and the second one is 12 credits so our goal is to get those 11 credits and then to bridge into about six uh five or six of those um those next 12 credits in that next degree because some of the courses overlap between the two different uh programs so you know you don't need to do all 12 of them but there's but but i can like honestly and and like humbly say i can't provide the high school student in this district with the resources that we have in the space that we have with the last six credits of that 12 credit program at that institution that's that's theirs they need to keep that i'm not trying to take that away from them okay okay and um i think one of the most exciting things is the fact that that there are so many opportunities there's so many manufacturers in the area um in cheshire uh waterbury that it's i mean i think we all want to see our kids stay in town if we can do that so you know what you you said you're starting to reach out to local employers are you finding enthusiasm and what more can be done what more can we do um so there's there's two main there's too many companies in town that that led me into this um this what i should be purchasing and they were the people i was consulting when i first wrote this grant and that was marion manufacturing and micro tech so both both are really close to one another and mary manufacturing um you know family who runs them i taught there i taught tyler and i taught brandon who now works there he's a he's a naughty talk valley advanced manufacturing certificate graduate and he started working there as part of his work based learning through naugatuck and then he he actually helped me develop a lot of this programming and some of the course work and some of the stuff that we're doing so he's one of my former athletes and all that stuff so at the end of the day those two companies have already opened their doors to me and have already said whatever else you need let's talk um it just unfortunately like in order for me to have the best effort in saying like i want to be in this school as many days as possible i'm not i'm not knocking on doors around town at the moment right i need to have conversation with people but i'm not going in and out of plants that i know that people aren't doing this all day long so i i need to make sure that for our to do what we need to do every single day at this school i need phone calls emails um so ultimately faith i guess you're asking do we need i need i need to tap better into our school business partnership i need people who are interested in uh working through the the state department of labor's uh pre-apprentice program um you know and again this is like years down this is two three years down the road so this isn't something i need like tomorrow this isn't something i need you know for next fall dr guy you want to add to this yes that's exactly what i wanted to say is that uh you know this it it's you can hear his enthusiasm we i think this is so wonderful that we have uh courses that are aligned with uh with with the college um i love the idea that our kids are going to get this credit but we also know that this is uh this is a process so we are right at the beginning and and what sean is is talking about are the steps that are that we're going to need to put in place going forward so as we go along um i think that's going to be a key piece of how we uh how we continue to to develop the program connecting with kelly lens connecting with the school to business partnership um connecting with those internship programs that we already have in place and expanding on what we already have uh to then deepen uh this pathway for our kids so um it's exciting yeah and maureen i know that you've been working on the mastery-based learning criteria as well and speaking with kelly lens today not only in this area do we need more experiences for our students but more job shadow programs in general for all of our kids especially for those who have looked to the job shadow as a way to complete that mastery-based requirement i don't know if you want to add anything but i thought i'd just mention that for you yeah thank you yeah i would um just throw in a lot of what sean's talking about sean a lot of those students can extend their learning in your classes and use that as their mastery-based projects yeah i'm really excited about that that whole avenue as well is to have that that authentic connection whether it is leaving and going in industry and working in the community or if it's an extension of what we're doing inside here but i've always wanted to have that that kind of open project world where kids are you know working towards their own goals and finishing something that's that's important to them and also hopefully uh you know steers them into a quite rewarding and uh a very nice compensating uh career with not much cost of education right especially for giving or not giving but if we're able to provide for them some of those credits before they would learn more yeah well um thanks so much this was great thank you very much okay and i would love to have us in here like once things are a little bit more normal and i can have the whole board and show show around the stuff that we're doing here because this is it is exciting it is exciting like what what we're able to do with some of the machines that we have here yeah great fire that baby up all right all right well thank you for your time and you're here this evening thanks all right you're welcome thank you okay um next item is uh psat results for the psats take it away thank you great thank you mary's going to vent on this and i just want to sort of give it a little bit of um context in the idea that we've heard a lot of updates as to some of our elementary assessments and where our kids stand with those especially in light of some of the concerns about kovid last year and so we talked a little bit about middle school and so i'm really grateful to mary and maureen for being here tonight to share these psat results with that same end in in our thinking that same goal thanks mary thank you marlene thank you everyone thanks for having me to be able to share our results i'm going to share with you the uh the results for this year grades 9 10 and 11 and if you'll indulge me i'll just explain a little bit about the the suite of assessments that our students can take so we have offered for many many many years the grade 11 psat which is also the qualifying exam for the natural national merit scholarship that's always given in october also the grade 10 psat which is not the qualifying exam but is the preliminary scholastic aptitude test uh and then grade nine which the first administration of that was last year in october of of 2019.

uh that we are changing the uh horticulture production greenhouse it's uh i think we just added the name to agricultural mechanics and introduction to animal industry which is still again part of our ag program and so what's happened with that because they're both one is ags 215 the ag mechanics we had it last year but we were able to get our one of our teachers certified to get the yavapai called credit so we had ad mechanics in the past um last year but or this year but what's happening is now we're able to have a dual enrollment credit for that and the same thing we went ahead and changed that second year to ags 120 which is introduction out in industry and again we have the teachers that have the right certification to teach that it's a dual enrollment yep um so that is it for the course description okay do you want us to talk about the cast yeah it's part of the yeah adding the past program okay they need to vote on this first or no okay um so uh i wanted to briefly discuss what we're doing with our seniors so i want to share what the high school is proposing for failing seniors the counselors met with the administration last week to come up with a plan for our seniors that have failed classes last semester we have about 30 seniors out of 134 that are not on track to graduate we had only like five but now we we're up there so the proposal is for this that the seniors must attend um the school on march 6th and 7th from 8 a.m to 3 p.m it's a friday and saturday and what they will do is uh they will do packets so this is uh this work is based on um students it depends on the how they failed okay so if a student failed like 20 percent or less they'll get three packets if if they fail around 21 to 40 percent then they get two packets if they fail 41 to 60 percent then they get one packet and that's about 20 so we're trying to get them up to where they get 60 that is our that is passing and so we can they can get credit okay so a student won't get an actual grade like a b c d or f what f is that they'll get a p for pass so they will get a passing uh grade that way and not an actual letter grade because this isn't about them getting a letter grade or trying to get a better grade it's just about getting them to pass um heidi has spoken with the the senior teacher she's been working with them to create those packets we will have teachers on both of those days and especially like a math and english teacher to help the students with those packets we're also going to provide breakfast and lunch and snacks we have culinary working on snacks because let's face it food brings people in so um we're excited for these seniors we came up with an acronym which i'm very proud of it's past p-a-s-s and it stands for promoting at-risk senior success so we're really excited about this we we started this last week uh we're calling parents starting tomorrow we're going to get them in there i appreciate this so much i think you guys thank you so much i think that that it's a really great idea i think it's really important that we get these kids to graduate and we wanted to give the kids enough time who have jobs to ask for those days off and and and that's friday and saturday we really need them to get there if it's important for them to graduate and we feel also it'll give them a momentum for this semester because if they feel like i didn't pass last semester first first semester this year then i'm not going to make it so we feel like this is an incentive to hopefully get them to um get to work on this semester if they're behind yeah and you know some kids have one class some have two some have three some have four that was gonna be my question yeah so the packets three two and one is kind of dependent on where they are as well yes well they failed the class like the actual class we know their percentage and their teachers that's why we talked to the senior teachers know what they missed can look back and see what they missed and kind of come up with assignments that will incorporate the standards and make sure that they get the information they need um and have that practice and those students that are at that 20 percent or less in all classes hopefully not but i'm sure yeah you know i'll be honest with you i created a spreadsheet and i gave it to heidi we don't have anybody that i can't think of anybody that has like four classes at twenty percent okay good thing i was gonna ask would they go failed another class but i can tell you i was just gonna ask do you really think they would yeah we have it all broken down so we're pretty clear on who those kids are and uh and we're also going to both counselors me and miss mcintyre will both be there we want to counsel the kids as they leave because we're also concerned about this semester so we want to make sure that we help them out and if it's an elective class that we we will look at looking at um there's some test outs that we can do for elective courses right and we really appreciate the hard work that miss d'angelo and miss mcintyre are doing to make sure that these kids come in of course all right thank you any other further questions or comments just a quick comment for me if possible yes i appreciate the work that they've done um we are using existing um procedures to do this it's something that we we do which is the grade change and things like that so it doesn't need to be the past program is not what you're approving it's just the course catalogs what you're approving that was just in a kind of addition as part of we had them we have teachers have been working with the seniors this last month and saying come in work with me let me get you let's get you up to where we can get you a passing grade and then they do um a great change form so this is within that same realm okay thank you mr shelford great thank you so then our agenda item is to approve the cvhs 2021-22 course description and do we have a motion for that please all in favor aye awesome thank you item 9b is our result results-based funding plan ms reader we are always grateful to have more money to spend and so like in the years past we have used this for staff um we've reduced class sizes and used it for staff we use just for staff stipends for results base gold we've used it for after-school tutoring we used it for summer schools and that's we've used it for computer carts some capital need items some curriculum that we've purchased so that's what we want to propose that we'll do with this money for next year as well that's great any questions or comments awesome that this happened again right yeah this is the third year in a row is that correct yes that's great fantastic well again it is an action item and we will need um a motion to approve we'll make a motion and make a question to the proof the 2021 del rio school results based funding plan thank you all in favor thank you thank you item 9c the revision of the 2012 21 2022 academic calendar mr so this is not the current calendar that we're in this is the calendar that starts july 1.

we could say that 500 per student was related to that per teacher and when we actually put that amount together it came out much less than that so we have already spent after one by moving teacher salary into that and freeing up mno capacity and now sometimes sometime within the next month ether2 should be coming out and what they're saying is that at that point those funds could be able to do three to four times with that original amount so we will be looking at using those funds to provide uh air purifiers and everything else that we can find because i don't think they're gonna allow us to use important teacher expenses again since we've already done that okay um i've also got a couple of questions on voucher um what were the results of the chocolate fundraiser uh where we've got the expense on voucher 8020 [Music] laundry can you let me know what that what we raised off of the chocolate fundraiser if you give me an email i'd be more than happy to look into that okay i mean it's not a big thing i just uh and then i just had one question on voucher 8023 there's 32 000 expense in about three categories but on the voucher itself it only has like accounts table and and it's just watch entries let me pull up about here for thirty two thousand dollars yeah i i i don't really have a question i just didn't understand the entries because on all the other vouchers there's an explanation of where the money went on this one it only addresses the categories um no i see i see that but if you could um i mean it just has accounts payable as a entry and a wash on the explanation if you're understanding where i'm coming from all right i'll have to take a look and see what was submitted okay i i will i'll email you on that one all right okay thank you for the questions here or online this is on the consent agenda your [Music] yes thank you kindly motion passes anyone online i appreciate if you could stop by and get these filled out we do this every year okay thank you okay we have our extension of the code 19 paid leave extension of the okay 19th av federal requirement for expanded equipment 19 related needs and paid benefits under the family's first coroner response act december 31st and they are extending until march 31st um if i can just go ahead and add this is all fascinated they are back then at the january 1st of december okay so there's continuity there then yeah okay and it goes through when march discussion here online mrs allen hi ms kais yeah yeah mr lee yes mr schedule for 2021.

i saw that one too yeah yeah i think it's important that we talk about that one because it has come up it's teaching of controversial issues and uh one of the pieces to that board policy that i think is is challenging for all schools is uh um the third bullet well let me just read all five bullets there's five bullets age appropriate proper decorum considering the students ages should be followed consistent with the curriculum and serve an educational purpose and then the third bull informative and present a balanced view that's a tough one sometimes especially in this kind of environment when right now because our i think we're in a i think we're in a tough political environment right now and that balanced view is sometimes hard to do and so but that is part of board policy so you know we have to i have to make sure that um that our staff understands that too uh i think they've done a good job with it it's not that it's not that i feel critical of that but i just want you to know that's part of board policy so is that something we would need maybe the policy committee to look at and see if it needs to change to make sure to see everything that aligns with curriculum and stuff right because if you don't know what balanced view is then no one else would know and then we don't really talk about that so how would that look for the board well you know what i'm saying so how would we how will we make this better so it's easier for you guys to implement we don't have to answer it now yeah that would be something i didn't mean to say that i don't know what balanced view is i just think it's a difficult thing right now because the equity political is so polarized right now uh i just need to keep this like i just need to keep this in front of our staff that we need to present the balanced view and we are you know i think around election time we send out some you know things that along that lines too um so is that do you have an um administrative policy procedure for this i'll have to look and see if there's one tied to that i didn't check to see that ap i'll try to i think it would be good for a good policy committee though yeah that sounds good especially because you see a bunch of new legislation yeah yeah completely overhaul this so yeah yeah it's it's good and this was uh i didn't pull this policy for this meeting this was just in our we go in order so this just happened to be the one that was up so it's good timing though good time to talk about and uh um we will pull the uh our procedure manual and see if there's anything tied to 680.

so i have a quick question normally i feel like we just go with whatever is the lowest and that one is not i mean well it's very close not exactly the lowest because so what would be the reasoning between picking siebert and not the one that was guzman guzman right meryl guzman landscaping yes um in checking their references they don't have any uh current accounts that are of a comparable size as the district's account would be can you clarify this bid for me is this per i assume this is per month per mo right yep for eight buildings is that correct and do we what if we have a drought in the summer right it's an as needed basis i mean who does yeah who decides that right and is there any opportunity for intergovernmental cooperation on some of these things if there's right would there be a cost savings in hiring a personnel that we have right now getting them a mower and a truck and mowing it like that so when i first looked at this obviously i did not have the i assume that this was per month but now you're telling me that's per week per mo remote right so you're talking three to four modes per month right for probably six months maybe eight give or take right i mean rob could you come up to the microphone please thank you so i guess that changes things for me because my question is now we probably have some staff who could do this job we probably have a trailer and we probably have a mower well we do actually yeah the portion of the district not on this bid we do in-house okay so it ex so the job already partly exists so what if i took a person and made it fully exist would i be paying less than approving these bids that's a calculation i'd have to run before well can we do that before we put this on as an action item i also would like to see that because if we're looking at budget reductions if it's going to be less expensive to right in-house and i would prefer to hire somebody in-house yeah especially like this is eight buildings why do these eight buildings have to be hired out and not all the buildings well i think that's an easier question to ask is why are these buildings put out to bid why aren't we doing them currently logistics the logistics we don't have the staff we don't have the trucks we don't have the equipment we certainly currently don't have the labor and the staff to do the entire district in-house so we picked areas that are reasonably awesome location to minimize right so we would have to bring on staff which equates to benefits to appoint equipment and things like that and it may be staff that we wouldn't need all year long either just for mowing well we do bring on summer help to help our crews so that it yes obviously we wouldn't need that for 12 months correct i think we've had these conversations in the past that it's been less to contract these type of services out i just rather than every time when we're cutting right i just if we're cutting a job that could do the mowing and the cost is pretty comparable i would prefer to keep current staff i'd like to at least know yeah okay we can do that thank you all right the next item is 7.4 item 7.4 is another annual information item regarding custodial chemical supply beds christie so these are uh products that we're currently using in our new electrostatic sprayers and our new kaivac machines however now that we just purchased pat in the past fall we're now seeing that the expected annual volume of these chemicals dictates that the product be bid so we are recommending that the vital oxide the gallon containers go to industrial soap company the vital oxide in the 55 gallon barrels goes to jh discount sales and the kibosh concentrate goes to unique products these uh this award would be to for like uh the rest of this current fiscal year and then the following two fiscal years to coincide with when our next big chemical bid would be um released so we would all be on the same those would all be on the same time frame so are we where what were the stipulations for uh delivery of these items should there be a shortage things like that that we've seen all of the supply warehouses are within reach so we can drive out and get them if they have a problem with transportation if they have a truck breakdown no i mean if they don't have the product to give us i will pursue it from a different vendor if we have to if they can't provide the product then i believe we have the right to go find it well and i'll just say that this is much like the hand sanitizer that the price has gone down so much so we're that's my next question yeah you know there's there's a the market is full now with the product so our vendors but three years from now it might not be that we need this much we're not bound to any minimums no correct no we this is strictly for what we pay for estimates annual uh usage of some estimates so if we don't use as much or the price goes down if the price goes down we've already been at it the price goes down we're locked into this price so obviously my concern with three years well we can uh if the price goes down well no it's a no or two it's the rest of this fiscal year in the two years yes so we are locked into the price but i can tell you the price um has drastically dropped from the first time uh we started buying this so then why would we want to lock into a three year right contract can we can we do a shorter to get the price we got right right because we said what's what's the price for two years and i can give you the camp so uh let me see here it is right now we are paying um for the 55 gallon uh barrel one thousand five hundred and fifty dollars was our last purchase and they're coming in at six hundred and twenty dollars wow yeah um they um the vital oxide the one gallon we're currently paying 143 dollars a case and they bid 69 a case so these are like very half competitive pricing okay are there any other questions regarding this informational item all right and item 7.5 is in regards to driver educational uh driver education vehicle bed christy so a bid was released for the six driver's ed vehicles we did bid it as a uh is two options one a three year lease and we just also asked them to give us the buyout price if we wanted to at the end of the three years and then also as a straight purchase a six dealerships were sent the bid we did receive bids from three dealerships uh darcy hyundai is the lowest bid for a rental we would recommend the hyundai sonata se as it's only a five dollar difference than the elantra but it's a roomier vehicle so we would recommend that to be leased for three years i have a question so i know earlier on the mowing bids we talked about siebert being comparable so i know the driver's ed cars right now are not cars they're suvs which makes me wonder why ron westfall chevy only put a trailblazer on here you know when uh we received the suvs that we have now from uh jobeck which are also chevy's heat at that time he told me that chevy is getting out of the sedan market so who told i don't i why are we not looking at suvs right i mean why am i not looking at something comparable a to what we have now these are i mean high school seniors are not seven-year-olds but why do you want suvs as a vehicle isn't that more cost for the games budget costs and the suv is significantly higher i'm just i a i'm wondering why they only submitted a bid for the trailblazer when everybody else looks like well we did it as a market and uh market entry level excuse me sedan or suv that's how the bid was written and did we put mileage on there for our lease or did we not an amendment for the 12 000 miles yes [Music] i what's the useful life considered of a driver's ed vehicle when we're looking at leasing versus purchasing well uh they do say the driver's ed department chairs say they put about 12 000 miles on so if we were to purchase um you know depending on the the warranty for instance hyundai's warranty is five years sixty thousand miles so that would be right we could purchase that car and still be within warranty the valley honda and westfall chevy those warranties are three years 36 000 right but so my question goes back to this suv where if i look at the purchase price of this one that they submitted for that trailblazer it is cheaper than the hyundai we're being recommended so if you look at the purchase price on that on the 21 trailblazer ls but it doesn't list the monthly purchase price for the purchase like if we're gonna buy it are you thinking we just buy it out right or we pay it off yeah i mean like i know that we've kicked around leasing them instead of buying them but if i'm looking at something comparable to what they have now i'm looking at the at the larger cars and i'm looking at the final purchase price per vehicle and if we buy the vehicle for some reason this trailblazer is cheaper than it's cheaper but not in terms of gas gas is very expensive that's a good point would you have to put gas and everything but sonatas don't use as much gas they get better gas mileage but a trailblazer could do double duty at hauling other gear for things no doctor sprout is like no no no i think we're getting too far into the week i think so too i think we had already discussed so we had decided to leave yeah because that would be the least costly option overall and while i too actually am intrigued by the fact that this purchase price is so much lower than the lease i think we had thought leasing would be less and at this point we're not looking to be adding driver's ed maintenance to the curriculum of our auto shop classes the cars they had before the equinoxes were impalas so they have had sedans before right but so we talked about leasing because it was going to save money but if you're i it's i'm only one so it i guess i'm just confused why the lease price is so much higher than the purchase prices but that's just nothing i know anything about or maybe it looks too good to be true maybe it is yeah i don't know well or it could be that the purchase has some kind of rebate on it yeah gotcha they're applying to it does anyone else have any questions christy do you recall i know you shared this with us before do you recall what the because we're paying a daily rate now right so what on average what is that per vehicle per month per month so our january bill was 697 dollars per for january per vehicle so substantial savings whatever direction we go so this is about uh if we were to lease excuse me it's a 33 600 savings annually if we were to purchase what would it be would be a one-time purchase so then you would save uh 4 000 x 12 so 48 000 a month a year excuse me is there so i we bid this out and i'm just asking um if we were to lease some hyundais and some hondas are we able to do that or do we have to go with a little bit no we could split it the purpose being why would you do that right i would do it for two reasons one i would have a fleet with more variety of vehicles that might better align with what kids are actually going to be driving and then the second thing i'd be doing is because we're doing this and we're trying to support local businesses uh i'm spreading our dollars amongst other vendors okay i i would want to clarify and you would i would want to check with the dealer because it was bid as six vehicles so just to make sure that they would split okay that's why i'm just asking the questions and just remember honda's are the most stolen vehicles yeah really nothing against them because i like honda's driver driver's ed placards on the top of them i feel they might be a little more identif i guess they could come off though yeah anything can be removed any other questions or information the board needs for this item so if you do have more on this i'd ask that if it's just more detailed questions about the various mechanisms by which we could do this if we could also email them so that we can all see answers that would be great okay that was our last information item all right item 8.1 action items does anyone have any questions can i have a motion to approve i make a so these are the two options that we feel like are most responsive to the feedback and the input that we have received over the last three months and the options that we would bring to you for your consideration and with that i will turn it back to mrs woodward for more discussion thank you um i would like to start by saying that the board really literally received dozens of emails with additional information and that was from all perspectives it is very helpful for our board to know what is going on at the ground level and to hear from parents and teachers about the impacts of each of the options that were presented as many of you may know we were initially going to have our decision making time on the 25th of january but with the um 5b option then being presented the board really did not feel that we should move forward at that time without the ability to hear and collect additional public comment and community input about that particular option so we postponed our initial vote to this evening for a couple of reasons number one we discussed all the feedback and found that there were several majority themes that really needed further study as a result um as i already mentioned we had option b which addressed several several of these themes but um it had not been vetted with our community um and we felt it would be unfair to set the stage for input on all the other options and then giving this option only that opportunity in public on the 25th and then finally and not insignificantly both our superintendent and one board member were unavailable for the meeting on the 25th in person due to quarantine and family matters and so we now feel that we have collected the data and we have allowed the comment period to really make it a well informed decision i want to thank our board thank the administrators and the community for weighing in and taking time to respond typically our public comment will come and there will be a second public comment portion but because we're about to uh discuss um the board we'll have discussion about what led us to um being able to make a motion i will open the floor for anyone who would like to make a brief uh less than three minute statement if anybody would like to do that we have a microphone in the front don't feel that you have to but if you would like to say something at this time i'd like to give that opportunity okay thank you very much seeing no movement in that i think um we will proceed but i do want to say that we're going to do something a little differently tonight to ensure that the board um is in agreement uh that we are ready to move forward um i will entertain a motion to proceed with the start stop time discussion and action i know that the board of school trustees will proceed with the voting on the star to stop down revision for the 2021-2022 school year thank you motioned by anita and second advice cindy for members is there any discussion all those in favor that motion passes 5-0 so we will proceed with voting on the start stop times this evening thank you so much um what we found in our discussion is that there were various opinions in our community and actually on our own board that didn't lead us to one right path forward i would like to now invite our board members to share their thoughts and opinions uh about what they felt was most important in consideration in the start top stop times um and if i could start with you please absolutely well thank you for everyone who has joined us tonight and for all the many phone calls texts i've received it's really been very good um for me when i started out on this journey back in november actually it was probably even before then um what drove my decisions and thoughts and questions was how can we best provide education for our children that that's been truly the driving force at every point after we finished our first round of public meetings i really landed on item number four i felt like with everything that was given everything that's been shared some of the research or really kind of met all those needs and met the needs of education then i continued to read i started really reading all of the input on the survey and that was just real eye-opening and plus of course emails from community texts phone calls from neighbors and and friends and it was kind of like puzzle pieces started kind of coming together and then i could have just an even more clear view of what our community was saying their points and really understand what they um believed and then when i would couple it with education and student needs it really helped me to see my way clear one of the comments that really um influenced my thinking that i would like to share was you know many parents said we've been through a lot this year and we just can't handle another big change and that really resonated with me and i thought there's we gotta come to the middle on this because they're right many families have been hit hard and um i wanted to be able to put that as something that you know would really affect education for those children in those areas and so that really helped shape my thoughts um that's and at that point that's when i became open to model 5 because i felt like okay i understand the the points the parents are making and i understand the needs of the school corporation so that really kind of helped me to understand why we needed to that was a viable model and i needed to look at it um i was really interested in all the research about sleep i found um when i did the research and read and looked up other reports that it wasn't necessarily the amount of sleep that that these articles were trying to get across but when they slept and now as a parent who's raised five children i could look back on it was interesting all five of them they did they slept when they hit their teens or even their emerging teens they then started needing sleep a little bit later and i found that so interesting now they don't want to go to bed so i still have to be a parent and say no you need to go to bed but i did see that there was some truth and maybe not for all children but at least for my children there was some truth in the research and i i found that that was a very important um a very important point to all this especially as we started looking at 585b so as i contemplated um i had to realign my main driver the education i had to go back to that so this was this is the main driver here and if research and experience is telling me that children who are in their emerging teen years and teen years need to have later start times then i thought okay that's what 5a gives us 5a gives us so that those youngsters who are emerging teens can have a later start time then that's probably what's best for them for education that so that's where i landed based on the input of our community the research um all the work that our administrators have done and they're always they're always contacting us with things to think about new input and they really try to make this as transparent as possible and so when i put it all together i landed that i i feel like 5a is the best choice for our students and our families going forward thank you anita okay and my facts came from the daniel pink seminar and the impactful points there where students 12 and under do best work in the morning so that would be your intermediate schools in the a.m and let you get to sleep earlier at night for uh teens to mid 20s they should start later not before 8 30 a.m and that was pediatrician recommended so um it was tough but i landed on 5a as well because it met the needs of the staff thank you great so kobe's put us in an interesting spot we have to recognize as much as we are thankful that we're open that there is going to be some learning loss we have kids who've been quarantined we have had some e-learning and some stops and starts we've had some hybrids and we're starting to see even as nwea comes back at the earlier levels that there are some kids that are sliding across the whole range so it's helped me quite a bit in kind of reframing what's important and i will say every decision i make in the next probably two or three years will start with how do we help the kids make up the learning foster code that's got to be the number one priority in physical corporation i think it's important to note just in general why i voted moving forward the lack of drivers bus drivers is a real problem it's from all over the state it's from over the country and it's not going away so we have to figure that out so that we can keep offering transportation the way we do here in avon and we have an opportunity to save between four and five hundred thousand dollars anytime that's presented to you you have to think about it so with those three things that to me was we need to do something and we need to do something this year we have this opportunity in front of us to take to to make a move and allowing the the the stop teams which allow the teachers to get together and have more collaboration time which then directly impacts our recovery from the learning loss that's too important to not do um i was watching a not very good football game last night [Music] and i took the opportunity to reread every email that was sent to us and go back through the 1250 responses we got from parents and i came to a couple conclusions one is every kid needs more sleep everybody can find the study or a pediatrician recommendation that their kid regardless of their age if their kids between the age of 5 and 18 that their kid is going to school at the wrong time i think we live in a society where our kids don't get enough sleep so it's very difficult to prioritize this grade sleep over that grades of sleep so then i start thinking about well then what is our community thing what's the feedback from our community and there was some consensus and scots addressed some of it nobody wanted the elementary kids in the first year in our community so that was almost universal so that's an easy thing for me as a board member to respond to almost everybody said the high school kids if they can get a little extra sleep to get a little extra sleep so again if we all kind of agree on that let's check that mark that down um so that puts you in the 8 5a and 5b realm and the really the discussion is who should go earlier intermediate or middle and when we had our meeting with the principals i asked a question of of our intermediary principles and that was because that's the age group where everybody starts to develop and hit puberty at different times what's best for this child will be worse for this child and what's best for this child will be worse with this child and as you move through those four years regardless of whether or not you go early or late it'll be right for half the kids and wrong for half the kids so that seemed to that that made me even more open and also more confused um and then when you look at teacher feedback teacher feedback was also split about down the middle half of the teachers at the elementary at the intermediate middle schools wanted to go early and half of them argued for the other side so having the science in my opinion being definitive that everyone needs more sleep and me unwilling to prioritize one group over another and listening to our community and listening to our teachers the best way i could sum it up is in baseball a tie goes to the runner and for me in school board a tie goes to the parents and what the parents more often than not said was that they were uncomfortable with their little guys and the little girls at age 10 even 11 being home alone in the afternoon that that's a that would create a problem for them and then also you think a little bit about change management because there were a lot of calls to not make a change intermediates are in the afternoon now our parents have figured that out our community has figured that out so if there isn't a compelling educational reason or a compelling health and safety reason to change it i'm going to vote not to change it and i'm going to choose 5b thank you cindy well as being an elementary teacher former elementary teacher would we switch times all the time so when this came up i thought oh boy here we go so here we go um i do have an option that i'm kind of leaning towards too and as i was working on my notes today i wrote a couple of things that i thought of and i'm going to just share my notes and although we the board we know that each option is not perfect and we will not make everyone happy i wish we could but it's it's not going to work i believe that the option that i'm looking at will be the most beneficial for our students our staff and our whole school corporation starting the elementary slaters later will then allow the students to diminish from school at the same time or after the high school which we had a lot of parents say you know there'll be nobody home to watch my child and so when we had that early time and then we moved it to the later time plus i like how all the elementaries are pretty much dismissing starting and dismissing around the same time we don't have that early school at 7 25 like we had that first time this will be hopefully allowed for an adult or an older sibling to be present at home that will be able to supervise this elementary child or their children the biggest time change as dr windham said was the east and west and i brought this up i believe it was when we had our zoo meeting the other night that uh the west east west is 56th grade and they're usually 9 10 11 aged that way and then the north south they're a little bit older and i know that some parents think and i know uh mrs winter and i talked about this about the kids the five six they're still kind of young to stay by themselves and especially that time frame so i feel that the fifth sixth graders are too young to stay by themselves in the am particularly uh the time change will benefit the parents especially at the east and the west um i know that there's new times that will cause changes in family dynamics but i am hopeful that after everyone adjusts to these times it will work best for all the parties that are involved i appreciate everyone's dialogue opinions and feedback as we have studied the best options for our staff and our students and our community i am going along with option a and i have my fingers crossed as i say this that whatever option that the board votes this will work thank you is that uh well i will make my comments uh brief simply because i think you can see that our board members have really thoughtfully considered this and we have definitely all had a lot of dialogue about it my first reaction to the options that were presented initially were that um the those models really had school be getting too early so i asked i appealed to our administration to please try to move that um the start time for any school to closer to 7 30. um i also felt that there was a as greg mentioned a lot of concern about elementary school uh students starting too early in sleep requirements but really for me it came down to waiting on the bus well before seven a.m simply did not feel safe for me in k-4 students um so i was very much in favor of moving the elementary start times um back so that our k-4 would not be standing on the bus stop quite so early we heard a lot this is a new topic that we heard a lot from but we had a lot of parents who have students that they transport that are in multiple schools and what they were concerned about in some of the earliest models were the pickup times being such that they were going to have great difficulty picking up one of their students and making it to the next stop to pick up their other student so we talked about that and i asked if there could be some amnesty for the pickup time at different schools since many of these students are transported to and from school by their parents or caregivers there was some very legitimate concern i felt expressed about navigating traffic and arriving for pickup at multiple schools and our administrators at the building level in the meeting that greg talked about indicated that they would be open to working on a case-by-case basis with families that find this to be the case for them i requested that actual data about the bus driver shortage um was something that we wanted to have shared with us and we were able to see some of that information it is really difficult to say how many of our really truly great bus drivers who are heroes also will react to this change um but we do feel that we have um the option of both full-time routes and non-full-time routes that hopefully will be enable us to continue to attract and retain um drivers um so i felt that we're taking steps in the right direction in transportation there were many many parents that said intermediate students were able to stay at home and um some were not able to stay at home and that certainly is a fairly typical line of demarcation where fifth and sixth graders are mature enough in some situations to stay alone and then others are not getting themselves on the bus due to a late start was not ideal for many but staying alone a few hours in the afternoon did seem um a bit more palatable um finally i i want to say that i felt that parents and all of our community needs to remember that school is the priority while extracurricular activities are highly important for families and for whole child development we as a community we are facing as a community and as a nation a severe degradation in student learning due to the pandemic that we've already talked about the two ways that we regain what's lost really are more student instructional time and teacher and professional development uh we are doing what's best for students to help them get back uh to the learn to have the learning stamina which is described by many of our educators that has been lost the ability to really stay focused and on task for a prolonged period of time all of the months last year where they were learning virtually and at home and some of the time that they have been disrupted due to quarantining due to face masks due to a lot of factors have reduced students abilities to really focus in and have learning stamina for the long haul so i really feel that it's important that all of us remember that school has to be the priority for our children in our community um early on dr windham reported that the copious survey information was divided and that about half felt one way and about half felt the other way and what we found in board discussion is that our board members feel the same way seeing one option is better than the other is um something that each of us clearly has spent a lot of time and effort to really um search our heart and search our research and our minds in what we feel is best for our students we listen carefully to each other and i'm proud of our board for doing that we listen to each other's arguments and each other's justification nevertheless we will not be in a hundred percent agreement this evening it appears and we but that does not mean that our board is not 100 committed to ensuring that the direction forward is highly successful and so with that i will entertain a motion about the start stop times for school year 21-22 i mean that the board of school trustees approved option 5a as the school started and stopped time for the 2021-2022 school year second motion by anita seconded by anne is there any further discussion all those in favor all those opposed that motion passes 3-2 dr windham the start time will be uh the option that the board is recommending is option 5a thank you so much appreciate all the synergy and the conversation that the board has put into that discussion and we will transition now to a presentation we will transition now to a presentation from dr susan bradvig on a update to our demographic study and as ms nelson is getting that pulled up as the board knows dr brudberg has worked with us for the last few years there she is and she did a study for us in 2015 and another study for us in 2018 looking at our enrollment projections and we asked her to do an update of helping us look at some long-range enrollment projections and updating the data that she had presented to us before so with that i will turn it over to dr brending how is the volume and how is the screen slides it looks great we can hear you and we can see your slides okay i'll just keep on going and stephanie feel free to jump in if i need to make some changes or alterations again thank you very much for having me to talk a little bit about the enrollment projections what i intend to do tonight is really twofold the first is to talk about um what it might be like or what a number might be like if washington township avon schools actually built out um essentially meaning what is the number of schools i mean number of homes that would be built if the entire township was built out so that's the first part that i'm going to talk about and then i'm going to go into what the current enrollment forecast is and i apologize for the touching mouse here so so what is the estimate of build out and how do i do that right so how did i come up with that i made some key assumptions one was that i was going to take a look at land use areas and land use districts and come up with an estimate of the acreage the next thing i did was i took a look at platts new plants some of the infill building and made some assumptions about what the residential zoning acreage would be and from that came up with an estimate of additional single family lots okay so uh this image is of future land use districts it is of the township and essentially what we want to focus here is on the yellow areas and to some degree the duplexes which are an orange and the multi-family areas that would be in brown going through here and figuring out what the acreage is it's about 3 500 acres that could be built out as future land use being residential other colors here really aren't important for residential building for instance the green areas are designated as possible park or open green space areas the next thing was to look at some of the current zoning for avon um and so this is the boundaries of the town and the darker yellow are residential zoned and the orange are is also residential zoned also looking at infill and a way one way we can do this is to go to plant maps and actually drill down to actual lots and see if that lot has been assessed which would it would suggest assessed as a residential building which would suggest that a lot has already been built out and then lastly look at new approvals for home building um these are things that i have listed here that are since the last time we did this study or did this update and that would have been 2018.

and the average per week since that october october 30th is 30. so since that large number has been accumulated since the end of october but last week the number was 14. so we hopefully again we're trending in the right direction in terms of number of of positive cases but with those now 500 positive test cases a handful of close contacts that have tested positive after the after the fact i'm going to just clarify or maybe bounce off what nikki's asked so what you're saying is out of all the student staff administration teachers the cases that actually originated you think from school is a handful is that kind of what you're saying yes okay okay i just wanted to make sure yeah yeah so what we have in any given day we have close contacts there because of school positive cases and then because of positive cases generally speaking right a family member has tested positive so the entire family has to stay home and so in many of those cases and particularly within a household there will be then positive cases from that so we'll have a close contact that's been identified for some other reason that then test positive two and it seems most likely if you're in the household of a person who has tested positive view may very well test positive yourself but close contacts we have identified that we have sensed people home because of a positive test case in the classroom on a on a team or whatever the situation has has been a very very small number okay thank you you're welcome as we on the previous slide as we begin to distributions and decisions sometimes principals and buildings are decision making centers sometimes we we have decisions made in the for the whole corporation in the admin building which way are you thinking about when it comes to using rapid tests deciding this is when we need to use one or uh something in the middle column called line oh contact tracing you know i i consider this one a close contact uh but that one it was only you know 10 minutes within 5 feet so who makes those calls yeah so so the based on those examples it might vary a little bit rich so so with with close contact tracing it is done at the building level in in consult with with kelly and her team so they're having dialogue about that but we are having to rely on the individual who's tested positive to help us out with that and then the acknowledgement from other people who wouldn't be aware of the the the people number of people who have been around that individual to help that and determine at the building level so they then report that in a spreadsheet that we have um that then gets tracked back to kelly so that she can put it in the corporation uh within the corporation statistics um so if we change this for example um it would be changed at the corporation level right so if we said three feet i guess we're going three feet but then at the building level using three feet now instead of six feet that number would the number and who would be determined in terms of the tests the use of the kits again we would set that direction at the corporation level the challenge is with this one is if at the building level if if i have 120 kids to give and i have staff and students coming into now the nurses office is what discretion does that nurse use as to who gets that that's where our anxiety is a little bit is is that we know that students do come to school with symptoms we don't want to encourage that though and have a situation where well there are test kits at the school so i'm not sure my child has has all the symptoms but they could test him at school if if if they need to we don't want to get into that situation um but if we did test there would be ppe and so with this this personal protective equipment there is supposed to be a a set of ppe for each test we're given so we should have at least the pp available to that nurse if that nurse is giving them the test to utilize for that one time and get rid of but then we run into if the student tests negative does that mean you send them right back to class but there were symptoms so you're probably still sitting at home anyway so sending them home is there another step to take instead of giving the test at school and similarly with the staff member how might that be so we again a lot of dialogue is can we give the kids to our our clinic we have a bcsc clinic give the kids there and somebody could go there and kelly's shaking his nose so that probably wouldn't work because of a variety of reasons but but health department yeah so we give them health department and they could use them and figure out how to use them in that that context um so i guess i was on that that direction from the uh the nurses meeting the other day so they're a variety of things we're just we're just not comfortable yet with with giving a test in the school building to our students and staff uh just trying to figure out the plus delta of of doing that um and and weighing those the pros cons of of that situation and do we have uh opportunities or ways that from building to the extent that decisions are made in buildings to share best practices or learnings i mean do we is that done on a regular basis so yeah what i've learned at parkside can be applied at sure the other elementaries yeah i think the the the um a good thing about how we've handled all of this has been that at the end of the day it's all centralized so although there are things happening within a building it's all getting every single situation we've had with a positive test case identification of closed contacts even how buildings are are creating space you know and and trying to eliminate right up front and getting proper physical distancing we're processing that in a central location to know everything that's happened to them be able to share back uh whether it's in a principles meeting or some other situation or opportunity as to what's worked well somewhere else so yes thank you you're welcome yeah each piece of information that is covered 19 related funnels right back through kelly very specifically but then dr bozeman and myself try to break down each of those situations given the circumstances and then involve the rest of the cabinet weekly in those dialogues and exchanges too to then push back out to the necessary people so your next steps are really to digest this information and decide how it is yes dr bilson and i think that it hinges a little bit upon you know these next things um because i like to think that i think logically and as we're trying to get students back to school it seems odd to reduce uh the number of days that people are getting quarantined or even even the number of feet that you could consider close contacts even though we're trying to at least be three feet because we're trying to get students back in school and have them here and right now we're not even at that point yet with all of our secondary students but we would be battling back a situation in terms of what might be helping not spread uh kova 19.

so we're able to provide our students with uh multiple opportunities to understand the standardized test its requirements and the kinds of questions they receive so these assessments increase in complexity so the grade 9 psat is not the same test obviously as the grade 11. it has two sections evidence-based reading and writing and math the eight nine math concepts focus on the heart of algebra and problem solving once students transition to grade 10 and 11 it becomes a little more sophisticated heart of algebra problem solving with a focus on geometry now in the 10 and 11 and then toward the 11 algebra 2 and trigonometry concepts are part of that assessment which is part of the passport to advanced math and additional topics in math which is where you may get questions uh around trigonometry in the evidence-based reading and writing class uh test class assessment i mean um students as as they pass through these three levels of testing it increases in passage length certainly the complexity of the language used in the passages but also as students are doing evidence-based reading and writing they need to look at text and analyze text and also interpret more than just the written word but also graphs so in addition they're they're assessed on cross-cutting skills which include science and social studies so the topics uh are are typically covered in um it's not imaginative literature it's not fiction they're looking at non-fiction and it can be a scientific subject it can be a social studies subject so that's just a little overview of what they do and let me talk to you a bit about the results so the great this year's grade nine class of 2024 in each of the assessments the college board sets a benchmark and that benchmark represents uh college and career readiness so from this point in a child's high school career if they reach that benchmark it's predictive that they will be ready for college level work in that discipline earning basically a c in an introductory college level class so in grade nine the benchmark for evidence-based reading and writing is a score of 410.

second while those in favor or opposed load on your computer mike hi move on to results anybody have any questions or anything about the results place the act map score they have those documents in there any initial questions from what you reviewed pulling up some documents again through edge climber as well as some of the documents that you have listed in your board packets online and tracy and darla and some of our other regular administrators have worked a little bit with uh one of our uh edge of climber gurus that we have a lady's name her name's beth sanders she works with us i think she's from prairie view and she also works through english and does some training sessions with them as well and so i'll let them take it from here grade takes it my building is seventh grade and that's really 10th grade at stacy's clothing so this is just our scores for this year from the fall map assessment i believe our data points are the blue line and the gray bar or brown whatever color that is is the national average so you can see that in all buildings we are above the national norm we also have an increasing length across all grade levels so that's good to give that bar just in case how many students um took the test so overall i mean year after year when we did reports our science scores always seem to be very strong um no i mean they see this every time you guys if you ever have any questions but that's that's one that you'll see because that bottom row tells you all those kids that we had last year were the ones that took the test that we had the data on so the seniors that we have uh right now will be the ones that will go on next year i will emphasize that every kid basically took that test which is really good i mean we really get to know the data on that if we can get every kid to take it and we did also with this group too and we're really pushing ourselves for our juniors this year for february 23rd to all take that free act we have free ect getting ready to come up and they'll all take it so that helps us look at that data and i guess i also want to commend donna boland crystal ecton high school administration staff as well because we do the testing on site at the high school so the kids they they pull up at the parking lot before eight o'clock and they can just come right to burlington high school they don't have to travel out of town uh so it's a huge plus to have that so and they put in a lot of time here in gmat to make sure the kids have that availability convenience factor is really nice this last one the word document that's attached is what you guys have been asking for um where you can track the class from start to finish the science one isn't as impressive because they don't take it as many years but if you look at um like this is the mass and this this is the senior class and this is tracked back all the way until they were in second grade um and now these are averages so this is pulled out of edge of climber that same program i showed you but edgy climber can only do like each they can do about eight years on one graph and i could have split up a two i thought this kind of showed their growth over time like you guys were wanting to see but keep in mind those are averages so you obviously have kids above and below that and then the red line is the mac media the average map score in the nation and what's cool about this is those those median scores are actually the actual median scores from back when they were in second grade all the way through so we went back because craig coleman had all that data and courtney finnelson of what the median scores were back in those grade levels and i plugged those in to show like the actual true averages and not using current data right for those allergies yeah but educamer does all of that so i mean i had to tweak it a little um so the data you got to put in there but actually all i had to do was pull the scores from education and it went right in and i just did it in excel it's helpful that they got that data you know it'll be interesting to see we currently have two two of them are full-time three so five students in high school in middle school and i think i have six and you have six so eleven all together so that would be something you guys can do in edgy climbers and track those 11 and see if there's any difference well mine are past that both minor they're faster [Music] but this is i mean i don't know this is what everybody wanted but this is kind of what i think it sounds like everybody wanted for this 20 000 foot view where you can really see what a class does that's i think that's helpful for people i mean for you guys it's more helpful when you get because you boil down to the kid each individual kid and how they progress for us we want to see how our school's performing and from a school board standpoint this is extremely helpful whatever you can give up in my opinion anyway this kind of data helps us show what you're accomplishing but you guys are doing it at the 20-foot level we see it at the 20 000 foot level and i think that i think that extrapolates really well i think it just goes to show you the teams and the staff that we have here and the kids right well i think they'd be helpful you know just to look at you know the 2021 seniors in 2022 seniors whatever and see oh is there always a spring or a fall where they dip down or they jump up you know is there something during that time where we're we do approve or we're doing which is what it should be right and it's kind of neat to see that steady progress too i mean you're seeing which is good if you if you had spikes you might have some questions as to why where are there things you know happening and why and you know what's going on so yeah it's interesting because that data which you guys are extrapolating out is part of the reason why some states have gone to the uh a different [Music] call a longer spring break and a longer and they only have two months of summer trying to get rid of those dips and so they're i don't know what they call the semester system or or quarter systems trimesters and so they because of those dips they use that data to try to and it'd be interesting to see if those states have seen a difference i have no idea if they haven't gone know indiana is one of the states that did it and it's been going on tracy and our technology staff administrators and directors for creating something uh and dr darla especially because she's elementary is really using i would say they are the ones that are using educator the most as well as middle school in high school because of the different testing they do that they they're they're getting there and and again it's more again more act driven a little bit different for them but uh as we use it more we're gonna get as they get get better at this and it'll help us i said i think it'll help us evaluate some things as we move forward and give you guys the information that you guys have been asking for so i make a motion to accept the results one monitoring report concerning science and social studies as reasonable progress toward meeting the board's results policies second all those in favor or opposed vote on your computer right tracy and i talked about because tracy and i worked together on the calendar come december to get ready for it to go out to staff before christmas to get some feedback and you guys have i say asked us to you know all the staff with comments and and and just questions or ideas or thoughts this year we tried something different instead of giving like two or three options to the calendar i called kathy freeman visited with kathy and kathy we're gonna do something different we're gonna give one option and then i want feedback to make option number two or option number three or whatever the case might be we did such a good job with draft one there were positive comments administrators and directors put it in the staff lounges as well as we set it out to you know via email um they liked draft one um i think i think we met their their their you know their their thoughts their ideas as far as the caliber goes and they seem you know to like it and so draft one we got it done um on one try are all the colleges still doing different spring breaks yeah there's i think three different spring breaks next year there's the second one the march the third week what happened like it all used to always be this is the same [Music] yeah and so if you remember we talked a little bit about this last year we went with the idea of trying to align with flint hills technical college and they align with emporia state so because of that that connection piece with our kids going over to queen hills we thought it would be best to line up with them so it doesn't interrupt their their education at home health tech so that's what this is right correct is there you anticipated a football game october 29th usually it's the 28th that thursday night right um [Music] there is a good chance depending because that would be the that would be week nine that's gonna be week nine it could be thursday or friday just depending yeah and i think that's fine valentine's but usually let me double check president's day for 2022.
