listen to approve motion to approve by mr richardano second by trustee chavez i love this sign language thank you uh go ahead trustee just real quick this is actually the one that that i was i spoke to on the last item so this was the one that that i had those questions on so okay in particular just that thank you uh dr bauer and that just highlights you know in our one-on-ones we ask a lot of questions so i had questions on both um again it's important to understand you know all the details involved so thank you dr bauer for explaining along the way times five i'm sure um anybody have any questions any comments on this item before we move on to public comment any others okay we'll go ahead and move on to public comment after do we have anybody on public comment and madam president okay i'll count to five do we have anybody now still none okay we'll go ahead and uh take the vote uh trustee chavez can't hear you hi hi trusty pam aye board vice president quintero all right and myself i passes unanimously now 503 approved cal net program for verizon cellular voice and data services motion motion to approve by trustee chavez second second by trustee becharano any questions concerns comments trustee vegano yeah on this one um i was wondering i'm hoping if mr gill or someone can just give a brief explanation about the recommendation i think we had a couple of different options here that we could choose from i think we have i guess i'll say traditionally or we've been using um verizon i believe it is um with for this contract or the one that's currently there is what we've used but it looks like we had another option and so i'm just wondering if we can get a very brief um explanation of the factors or what you know what's caused us to go with this one over the other one can i answer a really quick one before you do do you want to ask something else so that avatar can answer no i'm actually going to answer him in a better way no i'd like to have my answer from mr gill or or i think he has a much better uh i'm glad that you asked because he has a better explanation and and i know i know that trustee chavez she has great news so i'm gonna tell you that and i'm interested in hearing her what she has to say too i just want to i'd like to hear mr gill first [Laughter] i didn't mean to say before him sorry i just meant to say the results thanks thank you trustee travis mr avatar can you please uh respond to proposition yeah certainly so we've been with verizon for over 10 years and throughout the time because of our demographic location their signal strength being the optimal we use their carrier service for our maintenance team transportation team our id team so they are through all the different pockets of the city and in our demographics so we want to have a more reliable uh career so that's why we chose verizon 10 plus years ago now within the verizon the contract which is presented even within the verizon these are two riding vehicles by the state of california we currently are on a naspa contract that's why you see there are two options currently we are on naspo however we are recommending requesting the board to approve and switch to the cal net contract the reason behind is that the pricing structure what we currently have will no longer be available in the same naspo contract so if you want to have the same pricing structure verizon suggested us to consider calnet and so that's why we are recommending and under this the current pricing structure we also have those emergency phone lines which are at a zero dollar contract otherwise if we maintain the same nespo contract it will start the charges and when we consider uh our usage based on our phone lines our data usage our hotspot usage so we compared both the plans and we observed that this is the most cost effective plan to switch over to calnet okay perfect thank you very much for that that um that totally clears it up for me and and i appreciate that and now i would like to hear what trustee chavez has to say and in the nutshell not only but it is also you get good results because this whole time for months and months i've been saying that you guys found underwater or the internet was unstable and i now have one of their hot spots versus the other hot spot and i and i know that a lot of the kids have had issues and i was asking dr bowers are they getting them switched out but the results are worth it that's it thanks i was wondering what was different uh trustee chavez and trustee verano said it was user error no and i kept saying there's a lot of people who are having issues and if you don't have the issue then you don't you don't recognize that other people have issues with their internet so i'm just hoping that and i kept saying month after month that the kids who are suffering with bad internet service drop off and they're not in their classes because i've talked to their parents and kids that are so frustrated so um i think that's your example that it does work so i'm wondering if they need you extra for this commercial break here just kidding no way we don't do that uh not here not now um okay now i'm going to open it up for a public comment um after do we have anybody on for public comment no one yet madam president no one okay i'll count to five okay do we know okay um great uh we'll go ahead and move on to our vote trustee chavez no surprise here aye trustee and myself i passes unanimously thank you uh 601 approved oops sorry no it's okay approved cape charter school facilities use agreement i know you're excited motion to prove thank you trustee chavez motioned by trustee chavez second a second for the purposes of discussion uh second by trustee vegarano um any comments questions concerns by the board for now trustee uh yeah i just have a um excuse me a clarifying question that i think um i know because we already talked about this but dr bauer can you confirm this is just an extension of the already existing agreement and nothing new nothing changed no significant modifications to this agreement no and we are respectfully asking the board to approve it for the a cycle of five years okay thank you thank you um see no hands up i'm gonna go ahead and open it up for public comments i say trusty fam i don't know if you see that oh sorry yes for some reason he keeps moving he's on like my bottom right and now he's on my left so now i get to focus over there thank you trustee varano uh trusty pam okay i have the floor right board oh my goodness uh this is a jumping brady bunch scream agreed yes but uh you know this i think this was you know uh you know dr uh you know in in my one-on-one with superintendent bauer i mean this was kind of like the conte the contentious item and i you know i i think did was there ever an uh i i asked this question then and i'll ask it now uh in my experience you know on the bond committee previously in my you know contacts with the east side union high school district bond committee uh you know the east side is charging uh their charters uh a five percent oversight fee whereas you know in our facilities agreement kip is being charged the three percent uh oversight fee and so i i wanted to know if there was a price difference between oversight fees for high schools and elementary slash middle school because you know i i certainly would not want us to miss out on some much needed revenue uh and i explained that to trustee fund that there is but i wanted to see if mr chang was around because he was the one that worked through the details um and i'm i'm not able to see him oh there he is so uh i think you can mute yourself colvera so that you can explain to the the trustees uh i believe that the keep contract in east side has a five percent mr farm we don't know all the details of other districts and other contracts so yes can you hear me yes i can hear you well good evening everyone um yeah i'm not familiar with the highest provision for high school i understand that you know the three percent is the um is the limit that we can charge um charter school for their oversight and i'm not sure what other provision in east side um that garners an additional increase in the oversight fee um so since i'm not familiar with with with the agreement that they have with east side um in every negotiation there's a give and take so i'm assuming that if they're allowed to charge five percent you know in uh on top of the three not not top of three but instead of the three um i would imagine that um maybe charter schools is getting something in exchange okay okay that's fine that that was the only point of contention thank you so much uh kovira you're welcome don't go anywhere yet mr chang thank you um so first i want to thank uh trustee fam for bringing this forward um and pointing this out and so uh trust i mean mr chang i i think i heard you say that the three percent is the limit for us that we can charge but then you i kind of maybe alluded to that there may be some other part of the negotiation elsewhere that might have raised that for a different school district so the question is are you are you confident um in the the statement or the fact that um that it's an actual limit that we have on us at three percent and it's not part of a negotiation it's part of uh some kind of a legal limit that we have to charge yeah that that's my understanding i'm not sure if rogelio's here to clarify that but my understanding is that we can charge um charter school up to three i mean up to three percent for oversight fees um in terms of confidence i think you know we've been in negotiations since march um and there's there's provision in the agreement that kind of protects both sides in terms of fluctuation in ada uh where if the charter's ada decreases below a certain level then we can apply surcharge conversely if the charter school has uh higher ada then they would receive the according credit so and so i think we build the parameters to kind of um have a fair and reasonable agreement between the two parties um yeah so that's my comment okay thank you so kind of i guess like subsequent to that question or response dr bauer is there or i guess mr chang is there um a need to make a decision on this this month or would it be would it be wise to if we have time to look into the possibility just as trustee pham said just to make sure that we don't lose out on on an opportunity and if i mean if if not if it's part of the negotiation or if it's not possible okay but i wouldn't want to um you know leave a stone unturned if there's possibly some benefit to the district there yeah this this issue is this um a little bit time sensitive remember you know we was on the agenda about two months ago and and we had to table it so i think pushing it um down the road um might provide a lot of hardship and concern between both parties if for some reason we can't come to an agreement on this okay just to clarify mr chang um i heard you say that for our district three percent is the most that we can charge yes that's my understanding yes so i think it's for all for school districts for any agencies that oversees a charter school okay i mean i'm sorry i'm sorry to interrupt it you know i just want to remind the board that the you know contracts are very complex documents right and and i know that that east side is charging at five percent but i just kind of what colvera mentioned we don't know why um we were able to get the best deal and i'm just being very honest with you and that's why we have been the back and forth and stuff like that so i'm pretty confident that what we bring to you has embedded and it's the best deal that we are able to bring to the board rogelio has um you know revised and we just don't know because we're not east side what is in that contract is we're different entities right so i just wanna remind you that um we are bringing to you the you know the best that we could do as a team um and uh you know we have we have a team of negotiators not only colbera we have rogelio with him and we have mr loyal shira who is our uh consultant in terms of charter monitoring who's very well-versed on all of the the regulations and everything that needs to be considered when we go into these agreements so um very respectfully asking you that i think you're muted i'm muted but go for it um yeah so i mean i'm i'm very confident in our team um and i and i hear the confidence and and you know what you're saying tonight and so given that there is a time element and the confidence level that i have i'm i'm you know willing to support this tonight um but i just um if the opportunity presents itself going forward you know if we can just kind of double check or if it's at all possible to make sure that that you know that opportunity is not something that's maybe slipping by um then that would be good and again with full confidence in our team and the competence that they bring to the table you know i just want to make sure that we don't leave that opportunity if if it's out there and thank you again trustee pham for no bringing that up thank you and i do see trusty fam with his hand up you have your phone you know again this is nothing to criticize the administration here you have my full confidence but yeah you know uh you know charter schools are you know are are impacting our enrollments you know so i i just wanted to make sure that you know if we are working with them you know we make sure that uh you know we leave you know uh we negotiate the best you know the best contract we can get with them on the table so uh with that yes i i am inclined to vote for the motion thank you trustee pam um seeing no other comments and questions from the board i'm going to go ahead and move uh on to public comment um after do we have anybody waiting to speak wow yes madam president we have several people we have the first one susan boba susan welcome as soon as you begin speaking the timer will begin um good evening uh superintendent bauer board of trustees my name is susan oba and i am the school leader at kipp hartwood academy where i have served as a teacher and assistant principal also over the last nine years i really appreciate having the opportunity to speak briefly here tonight i just wanted to say on behalf of the kipp hartwood community including our staff students and families that we are so grateful for the strong partnership that kip hartwood has had with the alum rock school district over the last 17 years we are proud to work in partnership with the district to support and empower alum rock students as they develop into leaders of our community and as a result of our strong partnership with the district our students have consistently exceeded the state averages on both the math and ela aspect summative assessments we've also been able to engage all of our students in a robust distance learning program this year and maintain over 99 daily attendance in our distance learning classes again we're grateful for the stability that we've had over the past 15 years on the miller campus and look forward to the opportunity to stay in our current facilities with the approval of another five-year lease uh we again we appreciate each of you and the district staff's continued support of our school and we look forward to continued collaboration as we work with you through this lease renewal process um again thank you for your time i appreciate it good evening trustees and members of the alum rock community my name is autumn zangrili and i'm the founding principal of kipp prize preparatory academy thank you for taking the time to consider and recognize the incredible relationships that we've built in the alum rock community over the past 17 years of our partnership i want to thank the kipp staff and family that are here tonight in support and i also want to acknowledge the incredible work that i heard tonight in our district's commitment to anti-racism restorative practices and racial justice at kipp our mission is to disrupt the presence and impact of racial inequalities within the organization our practices and in educational access and outcomes our ultimate aim is for empowered alumni to live fulfilling lives we will achieve this by operating joyful academically excellent schools together with engaged families and communities as you know kip hartwood has served the alum rock community for the past 17 years and seven years ago we opened a second kipp school on the same site kit prize preparatory academy five and a half years ago as the principal of kipp prize i stood before you and asked that you grant us the opportunity to continue to grow our school on the miller campus and since then kit prize has been able to make an indelible mark on our community thanks to your support over the past seven years kit prize and kip hartwood have partnered with alumrock as locally authorized charters in the alumrock district we look forward to many more years of collaboration and the shared mission of the pursuit of equity and i thank you for renewing our lease for another five years here tonight thank you so much mr avatar do we have anybody else yes the next person is adam k welcome as soon as you begin speaking the timer will begin thank you very much my name is adam kaye and i'm the director of real estate for kid public schools in northern california i know there's we have other speakers so i will be brief um i would like to thank the board dr bauer and particularly assistant superintendent chang for the opportunity to speak tonight and for all the hard work that has gone into negotiating this lease this is the second five-year lease that i've negotiated with the district at the miller campus we appreciate the professionalism of the district staff and getting these lease negotiations completed early in the year particularly during this trying time for all of us in education we know firsthand how difficult the school year has been for everybody and appreciate the district prioritizing these negotiations kipp has been on the miller campus now for over 15 years we very much value uh being an integral part of the alarm rock community and appreciate the partnership that we've had for the district for all these years we asked the board to approve the five year lease i look forward to being on the middle of campus as and part of the alum community for for years to come while i've been in front of the board many times in the past there are four current board members i have not met and after things get back to normal hopefully that soon i hope to have the opportunity uh to meet you at a future board meeting thanks very much for your time i appreciate it thank you so much any others yes the next person is mr espinoza welcome mr espinosa as soon as you begin speaking the timer will begin thank you good evening my name is adam espinoza i am a kipp alumni and the current sixth grade math teacher at kipp prize preparatory academy standing here today for the purpose of explaining why i should continue to renew kill prize as a charter school as a former kickstarter myself i understand the impact of having a high quality rigorous research-based and equitable learning environment kipp does a lot of things really well we focus on developing our teachers not as educators but as leaders in the classrooms and communities through the use of restorative justice we are able to ensure that every single one of our students is given the opportunities that they deserve in order to make the mistakes now fix them and become more successful adults in the future we believe that every single student has a right and wants to succeed not only do we help our students be successful in school we also ensure that they deserve going to and through college when i became an alumni of kip they didn't just ignore me and expect me to figure things out on my own can provided the resources i needed to continue my education and ultimately go to college as a senior in high school three years after leaving kipp they took the time to help me write my college essays they helped me make my plans to graduate as a first generation college student in just four years they even paid for my college applications when i couldn't afford them during college they reached out on a yearly basis and checked in with me they helped me develop my resume my network and even my interview skills i ultimately decided to continue staying within the kip network by becoming a teacher for them i wanted to give back and ensure that every single one of my students has provided the same opportunities that i was given because of kim the students in this community don't always have this level of support in other schools not because they don't care about because they are often left behind or not given the opportunities to be successful our schools help bridge the gaps in student knowledge social and emotional development and skills needed to be successful adults allowing our schools to continue operating will allow our students to continue thriving and will ultimately lead to more equitable environment for all of us thank you for your time name is jamie juni and my son has been attending care hartwood since fifth grade he's currently in eighth grade but before i go further please allow me to express our gratitude for your support and collaboration with kip hartwig for the last 17 years your trust and partnership in our school allows us to raise our children who value high quality public education and civic engagement now let me tell you about a time during this pandemic when my son was struggling and his teachers brought us all together to help them despite kip hartwood's seamless and amazing transition to 100 distance learning since march of last year roman experience withdrawals and online fatigue which causes grapes to plummet from the usual 4.0 and as a previously active athlete down to barely above 2.0 with a low test scores missed assignments and hardly any motivation to do any physical activities as parents we felt embarrassed disappointed and guilty because we felt like we failed to do our part as his teachers and mentors at home luckily roman's teachers discovered some technical grading glitches and were flexible patient and understanding and allowing him to learn from his mistakes by making up tests and completing missing assignments and they helped us discuss his challenges and what was troubling him with a plan to get back on track and thriving but this process wasn't just to help roman it was a teachable moment for us parents helping us feel supported and motivated to partner with our son and his teachers even closer as we all do our part to help him succeed i'm happy to report that roman will be graduating eighth grade as a proud kipster who has earned the summa laude with straight a's after his first semester a great honor not only for our family but also our village at kit hartwood that's helped him earn it for these reasons we humbly request that you please approve another five years for kit hartwood's facility lease renewal thank you and stay safe thank you next else yes ma'am president we have one more person miss diaz okay welcome miss diaz as soon as you begin speaking the timer will begin good evening everyone my name is christina diaz i've been at heartwood for five years starting as a teacher before moving into my current role as an assistant principal kip hartwood has been a staple in the east side san jose community for 17 years at 17 years of serving our east side community traditionally underserved and overwhelmingly worthy students this represents 17 years of educators collaboratively working and learning how to be better teachers mentors coaches and supporters of our community 17 years of students being encouraged to take an active role in their education and their school community by providing students with access to curricula that develops their critical thinking and their ability to discuss and take action 17 years of students and families calling heartwood home 17 years of supporting and developing students emotional intelligence through our fundamental practice of social emotional learning after 17 years students still come back to heartwood either as visitors or new teachers excited to see ms menna who's been there since the beginning or miss oba who started as math teacher now leads our school as principal even i've had the privilege of watching my very first hartwood class become seniors this year my heart was overjoyed as i wrote letters of recommendations for these students college applications and i'll be shedding tears as i watch them graduate later this year it's moments like these where you realize that heartwood has served a whole generation of youth who are and will become the future of all of us here i've had the pleasure of spending five years as a member of this school i chose this school because of its connection with the greater community as well as my own the first day i stepped on campus i saw students and siblings and people that i had taught and worked with before and i knew instantly i had found a special place this is a feeling so many of us feel when we walk into heartwood this is a feeling so many of us have been missing since venturing into distance learning renewing heartwood's least would allow us to continue our mission of deepening the knowledge skills character and intellectual habits our middle school students need to excel in life and make positive change every day thank you thank you any other zaptor anyone else okay thank you so much um now we'll move on to the vote uh trustee chavez you're on mute vice president quintero hi and myself i passes unanimously we'll move on to 701 discussion action to wage second reading requirement of board bylaw 9310 and to approve amendments to board policy 1312.4 williams complaint policies and procedures upon first reading uh dr bowers are are you gonna speak on the sideline mr i just wanted to uh for the benefit of everybody right that this is a requirement for the federal monitoring pro process that we're going through this is an audit process and we needed to update our board policy to comply with the new rules and rex all of them have been um bedded and i just want to respectfully ask the board to weigh the need for a second reading and i had asked all of you that if you had specific changes that please bring them tonight and to add or delete or make the modifications remember this is all of that is legal language and it needs to follow the specific that is uh in terms of the update so that we can allow for those complaints to follow the the appropriate process it doesn't limit any number of complaints anybody can fill out so it's not about limiting any of that it's just adhering to the new laws so um respectfully asking the board to do that okay let's see trustee chavez with her hand up go ahead trustee thomas to approve thank you motion by trustee chavez second by vacarano um any questions comments to dr brower okay uh seen none at this time i'll go ahead and open it up for uh public comment i thought mr pham wanted to say something to um i didn't see his hand i know he usually puts up his hand so that's what i'm going by but it could be different mr fam is there anything you wanted to say none at the moment thank you okay thank you um okay i'll we'll go ahead and move on to public comment um mr after do we have anybody for public comment okay i'll wait five seconds how about now no none okay um any other any comments questions by the board before we move on to voting no okay we'll go ahead and move on to vote uh trustee chavez hi hi trusty fam aye or vice president quintero hi and myself i passes unanimously uh item 801 approval of and ratification of tentative agreement between the alum rocking elementary school district and alum rock educators association for the period of july 1 2019 through june 30th 2020 and july 1 2020 through june 30th 2021 move to prove move to approved by vegarano second second by uh trustyfam any questions comments by the board uh trusty fam you have the floor okay uh madame board person i'll just say one one thing and i think you know since the next two items are related i'll it'll cover it but you know as i said earlier you know in these trying times you know uh you know i've expressed my admiration for you know this you know the staff of this district and i think that this and you know then the following two items is a uh uh was it you know that the fact that we we are able to do this and show our good faith to our employees is uh you know uh for whom have uh you know gone uh above the uh was it above and beyond the call of duty and so you know the fact that we're you know that you know in these hard times we can still you know compensate uh you know compensate them to this extent for for all their work you know uh i think is uh you know a sign of you know how much we appreciate our staff so you know on that note i you know i urge uh i'll be voting yes and i urge my colleagues to vote yes thank you trustee fam any other comments questions yeah i just basically want to echo the comments of my colleague trustee fam and um say that you know obviously it is you know we're having to tighten our belt and times are tough but any opportunity that we have to support our staff that is you know going above and beyond as was mentioned in many different ways um i'm happy to do so i think that in doing so as a board as we do our best to compensate to the extent that we can our our teams here um that translates into higher quality of services and and education and opportunity for our students so so i'm happy to support this and and you know look forward to hopefully continued um cooperation partnership and and teamwork going forward with all of our units thank you any other comments or questions madam president i have a comment yes board vice president go ahead um i want to thank everybody for being able to come together and to come to a solution that that works for bargaining units that works for for for our budget at our district um i know that there has been you know the the budget meetings that uh that uh um board member and board member chavez uh co-chair and um you know there's very very real assessment of the tough financial situations that the district's going through but i also want to reiterate and make sure that everybody keeps in mind that this district has to function we don't have the luxury of sending kids to their home district like other organizations have this is the the the organization that's responsible for the education of every child who chooses to come to our schools within the boundaries of our district and so therefore we are uh tasks with making sure that we maintain qualified staff that provide a dignified and quality education to our children um and so the point i'm trying to get at is that we while we may be facing some difficulties we still have to maintain good folks here teaching our kids because they can go um there are other districts they can take off to and uh unfortunately we've seen some really good folks uh you know and i don't you know it's it's difficult to to say why um you know when when they they have they made a choice to to move on and so in order to stop that uh we do have to provide the remuneration that uh that allows them to be able to stay here and so thank you to our bargaining units to to to everybody there at the table the administration everybody that was able to work this out to make this um happen and uh and so yeah those are my comments thanks thank you any other comments or questions from the trustees um and the only thing i would add to all of that's been said just to not uh repeat anything um is you know as a union member myself you know i appreciate the hard work that goes in um from the union and also our staff right the negotiations and all those conversations are not easy so um thank you all for uh having those conversations um and ensuring that we come up with an agreement like you know everybody's mentioned something that obviously as a district we um can afford uh moving forward and also um you know showing that we value our teachers um and you know um looking forward to continuing on this path you know it feels good i for me it's another small victory along the way you know so um here we go uh and uh it will be the same as mr vaughn mentioned for the other two items um so i'll go ahead and do those comments uh for both of those ahead of time um if i don't see any others we'll go ahead and move on to public comment mr um after uh as you look at that avatar and we get hands up from public trustee chavez i want to thank the bargaining teams as well and for all their work um especially during these times we have to work with what we got and the money we got thank you thank you um mr after do we have anybody in public comment oh public comment madam president none okay none and we gave time um we'll go ahead and move on to the uh vote now trustee chavez president quintero i and myself i um or with one no we'll go ahead and move on to 802 ratify one time off schedule payments to high level um you know um i item that we're getting or or service that we're getting that's really gonna i think help us in this process in a very meaningful way and not just so we can check a box that we did the process but in a way that actually um will will help guide us to the challenging times that are to come so thank you dr bauer and and staff and i think the only thing that dr bauer and moving forward um i was corrected by the staff in santa clara county office of education i know they're now wanting to be known as a full name um and not scoe anymore so thank you when we address them you know out loud or in our paperwork that we write out their entire name um and i understand right especially when sometimes you share the same initials with other entities but very grateful and just wanted to say their name out loud right santa clara county of uh office of education leadership for um you know understanding our needs um being uh you know working hard you know to get the funding necessary in order to make these things happen so really appreciative of the leadership um and making sure that this happened so thank you again um any other comments questions concerns before we move bill 118 relating to the compact for education amend section 311-2 hawaii revised statutes to remove the governor from the education commission of the states and add a fourth member appointed by the governor and we have no one to testify on this measure members questions [Music] okay if not [Music] moving on senate bill 465 relating to the department of education requires the auditor to perform an annual operational audit of the academic and financial plans of the department of education requires the department of education to contract with a third party consultant that specializes in school finance to study the adequacy of education funding in hawaii appropriates funds to testify brian hallett assistant the superintendent department of education please brian hi good afternoon sharokina chair muay wacky uh committee members brian hallett the uecfo testifying on behalf of superintendent kishimoto the department has comments on this bill and i'll just summarize them very briefly um in regards to the audit um just commenting a statutory requirement for an annual audit in you know it's i think that's fairly rare uh and it may have diminishing returns over time uh and our con suggestion may be to consider uh we don't have a a problem with an audit an audit would be can be constructive and helpful for us um it just may be better handled through a resolution for for a one-time audit and we go from there uh in regards to the adequacy study we very much appreciate that and we'll just point out that's something that our committee on weights has been recommending um it's something that that could be pursued to help with the work that they engage in so thank you thank you for the opportunity to testify thank you members questions if not next testifier shari nakamura for hey coalition aloha chairs kidani and moriwaki vice chairs kim and de la cruz and committee members my name is sherry nakamura director of hai coalition we're testifying in support of sb 465 we like the first part of the bill the academic and financial plan together for a school is its playbook on how it will utilize its resources to make the greatest impact on students we know the school's process for creating and monitoring the two plans and we have highlighted this in our written testimony what we don't know is where there might be a system breakdown in the process an operational audit could help identify these disconnects and if we know specifically about these disconnects then we can be more strategic on allocating resources to address them and provide the best support for schools in addition we think this bill goes well with sb 807 on academic and financial reporting which tries to give more structure and simplicity to the academic plan we believe that these two measures can help education stakeholders understand how best to help our students and our system thank you for this opportunity to testify thank you sherry members questions if not next testifier susan picola davis susan please is susan there [Music] hi senator i think she's experiencing technical difficulties on her end [Music] susan are you there if not members susan is testifying in support of this measure as an individual [Music] that is all the oral testimony we have moving on to next item [Music] senate bill 466 relating to a school facilities agency amends act 72 session laws of hawaii 2020 to require that the school facilities agency comp file complies with the hawaii public procurement code authorizes a school facility agency to have additional powers and duties specifies additional uses for the school facilities special fund provides the executive director of the school facilities agency with authority relating to capital improvement projects for the school facilities agency to testify randall tanaka assistant superintendent department of education randy please hello kidani jeremiah vice chair kim vice chair de la cruz happy aloha friday we stand by our testimony and continue to appreciate your support and help i'm willing to take any questions that you may have aloha what is just comments thank you so senators questions are you uh is the border is the oe in favor of this or it says comments so you're standing on what are comments of improvement projects assigned to the school of facility agencies it's more of a the way we saw it as a clarification of the bill from last year do you see this bill costing any more money um i don't know senator because on page six lines 19 through 21 it says you use the department of human rights human resources development to recruit hire retain exempt employees architects engineers existing civil service positions and other technical positions for the development planning and construction related to capital improvement projects in that regard yes there is cost but some of that cost is going to be transferred out of the doe as we currently provide that service from the development standpoint okay i'll reserve some of my questions till later thank you members further questions thank you randy next testifier bonnie kahakui acting administrator state procurement office good afternoon chairs vice chairs members of the community committee uh bonnie colloquy for the state recruitment office we stand american testimony in support and support thank you members questions next to testify ed sniffen deputy director department of transportation ed please hi senator they're not president thank you this testimony is in support that's all the oral testimony we have members further questions uh i do senator kim so i guess it's uh randy doe so randy the bill also asked that you folks be able to appoint your own attorneys this is for the sfa not for us we use the attorney general's office we have a deputy it's taking power away from people and putting it into the facility i'm sorry to say that against taking powers away from doe facilities and putting it into the school facilities authority right so there would be like a hcda or but then so it's not doe it's the authority which we don't have anything yet really i know should be on because he was he's supposed to be the point person for the school facilities authorities i'm not sure what he's not on well and that's why i have some questions and concerns as far as what's the overall cost implications going to be how is it going to be managed and then you know i've seen these attorneys at uh start out with one or two and then grow into a huge bureaucracy uh similar to you know architects engineers and so forth and then they end up hiring consultants so i just want to make sure we don't fall into that dark hole again so i'm not sure who can answer any of this can we defer this until we have people to respond um yeah let's move on for now that's actually is the last one that was the last of this agenda okay so we're going into recess reconvening the joint session of committee on education committee and government operations the recommendation of the chair of education is to pass out senate bill 118 with amendments the amendments would be to instead of replacing the governor's seat to replace it with an employee and appointed seat the who will be the executive director of the charter school commission also with technical and non-substantive amendments members questions if not chair votes eye chair votes eye on senate bill 1118 is there any of the five members president voting in reservations anyone voting no if not five members president of voting i recommendations adopted chair the auditor's office providing additional clarification in the committee report as to the specific areas of the academic and financial plans that the auditor should look at and also requiring the department of education to contract with the third party consultant that specializes in school finance to study study the adequacy of education funding in hawaii striking that members questions if not senate bill 465 with amendments chair votes eye chair vote sai any member voting with reservations any member voting no hearing none five members president voting i recommendations adopted madam chair members questions if not chair votes are chair votes eye on senate bill four six six any member voting no any member voting with reservations hearing none all five members voting affirmative your hello chris cooper superintendent of clearwater schools with another update for you i've been doing these updates since july and was really looking forward to one that was not about covid but now that this one is about perhaps the worst winter weather we've had in 30 years i'm some of my excitement is gone but we are going to get through this together first of all i want to say thank you to many people that have made remote learning as successful as possible i've heard a lot of good things i know our staff has put in tons of effort students have put in tons of effort last week we had over 95 percent of our students attend remote learning which is uh as good or better than what we could could expect for attendance if we were on site so way to go and i know that took a lot of effort not just from students but parents in our community also realize that it's an inconvenience to many and know that we want to be back on-site school as soon as possible by now as parents probably most of you have received a notification that we are going to continue in remote learning for wednesday um know that part of the reason we are doing this remote learning is that it helps us meet our required number of hours per year without this we would be looking at trying to make up snow days on spring break or after the scheduled end of the school year which we are trying to avoid if we can keep learning moving forward today we've had several challenges that went into our that factored into our decision for tomorrow we have some broken water pipes in the district we have some non-working heaters that were honestly just not engineered for this kind of weather i know we have a teacher teaching remotely from our classroom that's 57 degrees today so appreciate that dedication and i'm sure she's bundled up and trying to stay warm in there snow removal has also been a challenge because these temperatures are hard on people and equipment the rolling power blackouts haven't been helpful but i have heard those are ending so that's more good news perhaps one of the most concerning issues has to do with our buses and about half of our fleet is not functioning today and unfortunately when the temperatures rise just a little bit some of those issues may not go away because of the way that diesel separates we had put in winter diesel and additives and taking the precautions that we needed to buses are plugged in but we're still experiencing some issues i know i talked to another superintendent i've actually sent some buses out to drive roads today to see how they were all those buses ended up on the side of the road and their mechanic has said they're looking at friday to saturday before those issues are going to go away so hopefully we'll be in better shape than that but we just never know i say all that to say just be ready for more communication from us if we have to change you should also be aware that our high school basketball games for tonight have been moved to thursday and we're really hoping to get those in at that time so i mentioned uh that i didn't want to talk about covid but i am going to talk about kobe just a little bit first of all our numbers should be low on quarantines because of the remote learning environment and i do believe this weather has kept more people at home so hopefully we'll be in good shape please let us know if your child is in quarantine due to being a close contact or a positive coveted so we have good information i also want to update you about some changes in quarantines for schools in scheduled county dr minz has updated those guidelines and has declared some areas as high risk and low risk i'll send out more detailed information but for now the short version is that if students are in a classroom and the positive person and the close contact are both wearing multiply tightly woven masks and they're wearing them correctly we would not have to quarantine we will still contact parents and let you know that your child has been a close contact even if they are wearing the mask and then it would be your choice if you feel like they should quarantine or not but the school would not require quarantine if those specifications are met so one thing you could do to help us prepare for that is make sure that the masks that your children have are tightly woven multiply and know that if you don't have that we can provide those we have some available and also make sure that your child knows how to wear their mask correctly so again we want to be back on-site school we know that that's best for everyone our students and our community we will get there soon it's going to be really strange that we're going to come out of this winter weather event and be three weeks away from spring break temperatures in the 60s soon sound really good again i appreciate everybody's flexibility understanding reach out to us as always if there's anything we can do to help you through this time whether it's remote learning or whatever it might be contact us we'll see if we can help appreciate everybody stay warm and safe out there take care goodbye you

uh pam can you take one call brown yes johnson yes nolan yes yes here gorman can you hear us in the background it is like really loud i'd like to request a motion and second to approve tonight's agenda no moved second blind yes hillenberger yes yes federer yes rave yes gorman yes uh please join us as we say the pledge of allegiance i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all i like to thank everybody for coming out um not everybody listening and watching at home dr stearns we've been together i would like to welcome steve diversity steve is going to be presenting later tonight on our athletic update we have good news and that we're finally able to be offering athletics for for students so i'm happy to happy to share that with you ward also received uh correspondence from a former teacher uh patty vanco her husband jeff uh recently passed away um and we sent flowers on board's behalf so i have that thank you letter that can be passed around and i'd like to draw your attention to the back of the conference room and there's a new piece of art back there that's hanging on the wall and this piece of art was just donated today by one of our central high school art students learn key and we're going to invite lauren next month to join uh join us at the board meeting to be recognized that's pretty cool all right next we'll go in the public cabinet so first we do chapman good evening uh first off thank you for listening to my public comments today uh there are two items on the agenda that are up for approval for the school board that i would like to touch on the first one is the district calendar for next school year the school board is looking to adopt option b which would have parent conferences moved to october and then students in attendance on the monday and tuesday before thanksgiving our cea executive board and we did share the survey results from our membership and you could see an overwhelming majority of those who took the survey support option a that dr stern had brought to the board in december option a has parent conferences in early november and also the monday and tuesday before thanksgiving are teacher institute days some of the reasons why cea supports option a is it provides not only more time to get to know your students but also to you know see the different interventions that are working or not working and collecting a lot of data and so having that parent conference in early november we look at being as more beneficial than in october it also provides more time between corridor at the end of quarter one and then parent conferences to also assess new interventions that are put in place and i think one of the more major concerns with option b is having students in attendance the monday and tuesday before thanksgiving break you know we've done this before in the past and the concern is student absenteeism and it's no fault to the parents or anything like that thanksgiving's about family and going on and seeing them and so you know people are going to take trips during that week and so having that time as teacher institute days instead we think or would be a little more valuable as we don't want students to lose out on instruction and i know dr noland you had brought up you know saint charles using having conferences in october but also st charles is taking all of thanksgiving off there's no students in attendance on that monday and tuesday and so you know ca is just asking that you would reconsider what you're going to be approving today or at the very least make some modifications to that the second agenda item does relate to um approving a five-year contract for dr mogan as deputy superintendent for two years and then three years as superintendent um the i've received a lot over the past 24 hours regarding this not um setting aside the candidate uh not dr maggie but just in general regardless of the candidate there's concern regarding the collaborative process regarding this a lot of people are concerned that many different parties didn't have an input in this so there are several questions not only myself but others who have reached out to me have and that i'm hoping that the school board could answer and that is you know why did the the staff not have any input in this decision why did the community not have input in this decision and then i've had several people reach out regarding even the timing of it uh you know there are seven school board members three school board members will no longer be school board members in two months we'll actually have three brand new school board members in april and those new school board members are gonna be school board members for four years uh that will be two years with dr mongan as deputy superintendent in the first two years as superintendent and so they are going to be up you know working with dr mongan and so people are wondering why would the decision not be made at that time after that new board is brought in instead of at this time so i wanted to share some of those questions that i have fielded and hoping that you guys would be able to provide the rationalization regarding that so thank you for listening to me i appreciate it we don't normally uh comment on public comment but i i will take some time to answer your question i guess um i personally spoken with some of the incoming board members um they're not aware of what we're voting on tonight but they hold our candidate in very high regard and i don't think there would be an issue um then but it was our decision to do that now um why we didn't ask cea or public um i've never been asked at my job if they should hire my supervisor and i really don't see why we would ask you who you think your supervisor or get input from you on that so you know that's um on me i guess because i didn't ask the board if we should do that so um i don't remember doing that in the past with our last superintendent so i didn't think that was pertinent to do it now so i just don't remember that like i said i don't remember that's what i said you know and to go with your first thing that you commented on with the calendar i know you're against option b that was recommended to us by administration who we've obviously listened to and usually take their recommendations on but you sent us this information i believe yesterday even though we talked about it last month and possibly the month before i don't understand why you wait till last minute to send us information um and the question that you posed to your membership the question for the public because i don't think they're aware of it from my perspective the school board understands what i'm doing and in quotations has my back the vast majority of teachers ec early childhood through 12th grade were neutral or disagreed with that of the ones who answered and i think well over half answered your survey it's a little concerning to me seeing that we just got through a memorandum of understanding about remote learning with coving we just agreed on the contract for two years where you guys receive over four percent each year i just really don't understand how the board doesn't have the teacher's backs so um i'm sorry you feel that way all the teachers listening it's a puts a bad taste in my mouth it's kind of unfortunate but it is what it is i guess so i really don't think i personally am not going to reconsider the calendar from the information i received so i appreciate you saying your piece but you know a little too much too late maybe so um well it's jennifer benson hi i'm jennifer benson thank you so much for taking the time to listen to my comments i really appreciate that my daughter is a senior in at central high school and so i'm just here today just asking um if you all would consider opening up the school um more i mean i know it's two days a week now in person and very appreciative of that but um um i would definitely like to see it open more like four days a week especially with um for the seniors but you know specifically because this is their last year and um and you know as a as a mom of the senior i just would love to see that for the um for the kids and especially now that there is um a vaccine um available i i understand it's um for certain ages but um i would love to see that um and i hope you don't mind i'm just going to read from some data that i have here that i collected i just recently found out that barrington high school juniors and seniors in district 220 went back to school full-time five days a week just recently in january wheaton north and south high school are having seniors go back four days a week and all day and maybe adding more later though this is that was the high schools that i have found out that are going back whedon elementary schools are 77 in person the middle school in district 25 in arlington heights is now going four days a week um and 70 percent in person um they specifically are not doing six feet apart instead if someone gets covered they are and they are within six feet of that person they ask those people to quarantine and this is within the illinois department of health regulations um the cdc even states that it's safe to open schools fully um and i know you know the schools i mentioned have been doing it with no issues the private schools have been doing it since august there's another school that public school that was doing it since august and they've been you know everything's been going really well with that um and they've been doing really well with those kids going full-time uh four or five days a week um and so that's just kind of um the things i wanted to bring up and uh my concerns and you know and i understand it might be hard to have all all the kids um but you know just asking that um possibly like like i said giving the seniors priority um to going back whether it be march i don't know just so they have some some normalcy for their senior year as they look back on that um or juniors and seniors um i'd even i know that's a lot of i'm sure that's a lot of work in a different organization to have that happen i'd even be willing to help volunteer or try to get some parents to help volunteer to get that organized or whatever it may be that needs to happen it's just a thought and my question is someone mentioned to me that next year that you're considering having a hybrid still next year even with the vaccine so that's my question is that is that true and then my other question is the field house is that i'm not sure if that's being used for classroom space or if it's not if it could be possibly used for classroom space and and then my other question is i saw in the chicago tribune that different schools were awarded money so i know central 301 was awarded a million dollars so i'm just wondering my other question is what that is specifically being used for um and yeah and just in conclusion um just as a parent of a senior you know specifically and the other parents that i've talked to who would just like to to see them at least go back for a little bit and have somewhat of a of a normal normal senior year um so thank you so much i appreciate your time thank you um we've jotted down some of your questions so we'll get back to some answers shortly second to discuss and approve the consent agenda second your revenue and expenditure summary reports are included in your packet revenues are at 47.01 compared to 45.61 a year ago expenditures are at 45.77 compared to 47.7 for a year ago we did not receive any transition fees or impact fees since last board meeting and then the bills payable for both northern kane and 4th central are are typical for february any questions today all right kellenberger yes yes yes second to discuss and approve the draft 2021-2022 school calendar so moved second so um as president chapman mentioned earlier um there were two options an initial option that was bought brought to the board in december which had um parent-teacher conferences on november 4th and 5th and then had nominal students none had professional development days on the 22nd and 23rd of november so it was a non-student attendance day typically in the past we would have taken uh this calendar to the district leadership team to look at but that team is not meeting this year due to covid so i did share that original draft calendar with president chapman i believe he took it to um whichever membership he selected to share it with i think it was his exec board and then um you know said okay looks pretty good so i brought that forward to the board in december if you remember in your discussion um you gave me some directives that you would like to see some revisions made to that you had concerns that that november was being cut up too much with december so you'd have two short student attendance months that that was a concern of the board and you wanted parent-teacher conferences moved earlier so taking that that information and then meeting with um cabinet level team administration looking at that we're also thinking about then the professional development in the spring where it could be really used for for some of our work with standards and assessments following the work that we've built up and so teachers have time to work on that so based on that feedback i brought back um my recommendation with the revisions of last month to the to the board i also shared that um calendar with president chapman um he again made it very clear that he preferred the initial uh calendar but the board after discussion last month said they were not looking for changes at this time for this calendar and they were supportive to move forward so that's where we're at any comments or questions on that all right pam um kellenberger yes nolan yes yes rape yes brown yes gorman yes the next motion second to discuss and approve lunch feed prices for next year 21-22 second so included in your board packet um we're recommending keeping our lunch prices for next school year the same as they are this year no increases so the high school would be three dollars and twenty cents middle schools three dollars and ten cents elementary three dollars teacher adults would be three dollars 75 cents um milk prices and the reduced lunch prices would stay at the 40 cents any questions on this no that's in line with our past years correct yeah we we've increased a little bit last year and then this year we're just keeping flat okay nolan yes yes yes brown [Music] yes last action item is uh we need a motion second to discuss and approve the affiliation agreement which allows our students opportunity to complete 100 hours of externship required to earn a veterinarian assistant certificate second as you're aware we continue to reach out to veterinary partners to work with us for the externships this is a new agreement that we've reached for this year so we're very excited that anderson animal shelter is willing to work with us so we're looking for your approval on this uh business partner i have a question so the more we put together then the more students can take that class than ever correct there's number of students that can go into each externship hours and so when they need 100 hours so you can imagine the number of veterinary partners we need but the more veterinary partners we can get the better off our students are this year we due to covert we did have some limitations we're going to let our seniors go first they got first priority to make sure that we could cover all their externship on ours and our juniors had to wait um kind of on the sideline to see if we could get some hours uh some people have picked up so we've been able to get some of our juniors in as well to complete some of their hours toward that hundred hours they'll need for next year so do multiple students go to one could be it's really up to the partner so we have some partners that will take multiple students or they take students at alternating days and work with them so most of our business partners take on multiple students and so far everything we're hearing from our partners is very positive experiences with our students you know if most of them have a student because we have like over 25 yeah all of our partners are oh have students if they're able to take them for covert 19.

received this in advance of the meeting so could you um Mr won just read through you don't have both of these Rachel 6171 and no this is in the agenda I think am I mistaken it was the you had a link in the agenda the Blue [Music] Link yeah I think carara shared this with every I didn't share it directly I think Carol poo shared it with everyone she emailed us revised a revised agenda on Tuesday and the policies were linked on there so yeah oh I see yeah made me nervous I didn't think to click on the link oh okay was my yeah because I did it right after we talked Rachel yesterday okay see I asked car to do it I should say and I apologized I was coming from it that you had already read the policy if I was I'm sorry for that it's pretty straightforward it's okay yeah yes no I I see it in its entirety now y I feel better about that and so the appropriate language would read Kelly if I'm hearing you correctly who is between the ages of and so this needs to be replaced with in accordance with okay that is correct and wherever it says that throughout in each P every paragraph except for the um so in the second paragraph the third paragraph and then um the last paragraph would have to would have to be changed and and I'm happy to go in and tweak the wording to that I just wanted to make sure that everyone was okay before I did that I mean it sounds like we all are okay with that are there any objections from the committee no okay I just have one one other question um Kevin every time we bring this to the board it goes before us lately it's gone before us um to vote on every single time instead of the first reading the second reading and then we finally vote on the on the last reading and when we vote on the first and second I always feel like we're voting to accept it and I guess I'm not understanding why we we don't just put it on the board agenda for the first reading and then people come back with objections or if they have any and then it goes on for the second reading and everybody comes back with objections if they have any and then it goes before the board in its final stages for a final vote so why are we why are we changing that I'm not sure what we changed we changed it to be we vote on it every single time there the first reading the second reading and the third reading and I always feel like we're voting to accept it on the first and second reading I think we're accepting the the first reading as a first reading right but not as a not as a vote to approve it it was just like right but it's never it's it was never that way no we didn't it that way no but as long as we're understanding that I don't know I just feel like I'm voting to accept it that's all because it's never really clear that we're accepting the first reading in in my head could be just my head well I I do I don't remember the discussion but I do remember a board meeting um Kathy actually I think you raised this question yeah I don't remember I don't remember how it was resolved in the meeting right now it wasn't I don't even think it was answered okay it's just a question I don't know whether it's something new that that came down that we have to vote on every single reading yeah it's nothing that I've imp that I've introduced new that's for sure I mean my in my experience it's been first reading and so it's first reading available for the board to review but also for the public to see right and review and then a second reading for the board to review and it's public to see correct and then if there's no updates and then it's approved there you go still talking about really three three readings I look at and and again we go back to the very first reading to bring it to the board the board look at it okay and we accept that the board had brought this to uh the committee has brought this to the board the second one is if there's any corrections to be made and you have to uh make a motion to accept those Corrections okay as a group this is my understanding from what you know we have been if there are if there are any yes a long time C they used to just bring us the first reading we look at it accept and then the second reading uh if there was no correction we accepted the recommendation okay okay did you hear me or I got shut off yep I heard you yeah that's my understanding as well and I can go back and re and look at the bylaws and you know review that again just to make sure I I think it's actually we only need second two readings but I can I'll confirm and see what our bylaws say it's two readings and then you accept on the third on the third part yeah okay but when you if you really think about it if there's any correction that has to be made you have to accept that at that second reading in order for it to come into the third reading where the full board accept the corrections okay we we'll get it cleared up okay thank you okay so kayy and I we will make these updates as discussed and I put some comments in these two areas for right now so these sentences will be place within accordance with state law state and federal Kevin yeah state and federal okay yeah both we have to follow both okay and there's it stated again in the last paragraph thank you I have my hard copy that I've wrote all over as well so I will bring that when we when we do it okay okay so are the committee members okay to bring this recommended um version of this policy to the full board yeah yes yes yes any objections okay so it passes it will be on the agend on the agenda for our next meeting okay thank you next one so the next policy is 6159 this is individualized instruction and there are actually two policies for consideration um [Music] Kell you w to start off with which one you want to recommend and just but we can it's up to you how you want to handle it sorry that's okay thank you Kevin um so you'll see uh the the first section is on instruction and then the second section is on referral um so I am going to recommend that you scroll down a little bit to the second the another version of the policy and the reason for that is the um individualized educational program the instructional piece this reiterates what we talked about in the last policy that the school district shall comply with all state and federal laws concerning the provision of free and appropriate public education to students with disabilities um this summarizes the previous policy that we just talked about that outlines the eligibility so I think you can just move right into the referral process which is really the intent of additional information in this policy um so I would recommend that because we just went through the previous policy um and you'll find the first the first recommendation of in the paragraph the two paragraphs above are um very similar to what we just um talked about in policy 6171 that I think we can Briefly summarize and then move into the next section which is on the referral process um and again the same recommendations here rather than listing out the Age 3 to 22 so now I'm in the first paragraph um related to referral I think it's the fourth line down um that we use the same language in accordance with state and federal law and that Kelly excuse me could you make the um uh lettering a little bit bigger for my old eyes please absolutely thank you oh boy not a problem so I don't know if there's question I can explain kind of the rationale behind this policy this is um letting families know uh that we are here to provide um uh evaluations for students that are suspected of having disabilities um and again those ages right now would be between the age of three and up to the 22nd birthday for certain students that were deemed eligible um and this talks about the process in which families are entitled to go through if they suspect their student or their child I'm sorry of having having a disability um it then reiterates um that students remain eligible once found um up until either they graduate or potentially up until the 22nd birthday and again that is determined uh by the planning and place placement team or PPT process um and because as we discussed in the previous policy that we know that that is going through um the second Circuit Court of Appeals right now that decision um that that could change and so I think it's best to just use um the state and federal law as in accordance with state and federal law for the ages of student eligibility in the event that that changes it would protect us and indicate to the public that we follow all state and federal guidance so Kelly any piece of the first version or just the second I am just recommending the second thank you Kelly it's Jo just yes correct me correct me wrong we're required to do all of this stuff anyway whether we had a policy or not because this is just basically setting out federal and state law anyway right correct and so the the legal guidance on this is because we're required to do it anyways less is more when it comes to this and just reference your state and federal laws yep it's always safest to do that more you say the harder no no but the more you say the more more places you have where somebody can take issue with what you've said correct and because we know there's the potential for this this particular guidance to change I just think it's it's best and most advisable to do this I didn't know Rachel you had asked previously if I was recommending anything from the first recommended policy was there anything in the prior two paragraphs that you thought wasn't covered in the previous policy or later in this one no no I just just for clarity okay um are there any questions from Committee Member okay um can we vote to move this to the full board as as [Music] recommended yes yes yes yes absolutely thank you any objection opposition concern okay move thank you very much thank you Kelly thanks Co so the next policy just going back to the agenda is policy 1312 community relations and appeals and this brings us to here it is so I just W I'm sorry let let me first just make the board aware uh we had a case a few years ago in in office of civil rights case with um and a and and in one of the Resolute the potential resolutions of that case we had a family who um looked to make a com a complaint about our extended learning program and uh what we learned after the investigation they didn't have a formal way um their argument was they didn't have a formal way to file their complaint um as a as as a as a resolution to the to the to the um to the complaint um we decided we agreed that we would have the board um adopt a policy uh where our families can formally uh make appeals um if they have an issue with an issue of concern with one of our staff members or employees in a district and so community relations policy 1312 allows for that provides that opportunity um and although this wasn't not required as as a condition of that agreement um there's also another opportunity for families to U file a former complaint with the superintendent regarding any board policies as well well so I want to share those two for the board's consideration so this is the first one it's pretty straightforward um for those of you who have seen it for the first time the board encourages parents and Danbury families to express their concerns with the danburry school system or its employees to the appropriate administrative Personnel when motivated by a sincere desire to improve the quality of danburry public schools educational program complant should first present concerns regarding board employee performance directly to the employee involved in an event to resolve the matter with the employee directly however complaintants not satisfied with the employees response to their concerns may also feel free to communicate such concerns directly to the employes immediate supervisor by completing and filing form 1312 which I'll show you momentarily citizen or family concern reporting form in emergency situations when complaintants have a concern that impacts on the current safety or Integrity of dries d Public Schools or its students and staff complaintants may address such concerns immediately and directly with the appropriate administrators and or the superintendent of schools without regard to the prior procedures when a complaint appropriately raises a concern with an administrator the administrator will take the steps that he or she deems appropriate to investigate and to resolve the situation and to refer to it to the appropriate level of such investigational resolution failure to do so will be considered a violation of this policy and could result in an appropriate dislar action here are some legal references and then underneath sorry let me scroll down a little bit faster and here's the form uh that will be made available for our families um and I'll have to speak to car and Gina and figure out where this can go on the district website so it's available for families so straightforward form available you know made available by cab parents will include their name if there a students involved their concern staff members involved detailed statement and they would submit that to my office and I put it in there exactly who that need to submit it to um so I I just thought I'd start there for some reaction um Rachel would you prefer that I walk you through the next policy now and just talk about both you want do one at a time I think so it's short and sweet okay okay and so the next one after the form and and this is pretty straightforward complaints about board policies should be directed to the superintendent of schools complaints complaints shall be in writing and sign stating the specific objections to the policies the superintendent shall review any complaint and conduct whatever study or investigation he or she deems appropriate the superintendent then shall then submit the complaint and his and her recommendation to the board the board May review the the review the policy amend or refer the policy for review if necessary or repeal the policy if appropriate and notified and complaint of the action taken then that's that's the end you know kind of short and sweet but again they could use the same form um to record their concerns um in this you know here would be the procedure for that process are there any questions from committee members um yeah I got quickly Kevin um the the first policy the 0.1 policy is opposed to two we don't have we do we not currently have anything like this in place do we not current I mean do we not currently have any policy about complaints so Joe we had a policy about complaints and but according to C we didn't have this one and when we were looking at when we were looking at this policy we felt like this one was most appropriate to meet the needs of the complaint that was filed that was filed with us I my main concern is just are we inviting them by way of this policy are we making it are we inviting complaints right um that's just my question and I understand that and I appreciate the concern too um and just one thing on the second part of this the second piece um the board the superintendent reviews the complaint and the policy and makes a recommendation of the board the last sentence the board May then review the policy amend or refer the policy for review if necessary repeal the policy if appropriate the board may also do nothing I think we need to clarify in there that the board doesn't have to do anything um because the board establishes I mean the board can the superintendent May recommend not doing anything the superintendent May superintendent May recommend changing the policy we may say no um I I I don't know I don't I'm not wed to any particular language in there on how we do that it may just be something as simple as the board May then review the complaint and the policy and then either retain the policy or amend the policy or whatever I'm not I'm not sure I'm wed to the language I can play with it a little bit and email it to you after the meeting okay email it to the members and email it to you after the meeting if you want that was just my thought there is we make we we don't have to do anything at all and I think we may want to make that clear here I mean it doesn't say we have to here or it doesn't say we we don't have to or anything but we should make it clear that we don't just so it's not ambiguous this way nobody screams and yells that we don't change something that was it thanks thank you thank you Rachel sure thank you Joe um just wondering if we could clear it up tonight though so [Music] um I mean it does say if necessary and if appropriate and notify the complainant of the action or inaction taken I'm doesn't sound good I was just going to say and say if nothing is you know if the board does not feel any action is required they are not required to do so or is appropriate that you could add a sent them I wonder if you could play with the language a little more simply though and just say the board May then review the policy amend or refer the policy for review if um you know if so uh determined you know in other words is sort of leaving it under the jurisdiction of the board to make that assessment I'm sorry are you saying determined period if so determined period yeah I guess you'd have to add repeal up further and then how would what would be the next sentence again I can just bold it and see if you like the way it feels and you can come back and change it a suggestion um now this probably flies in the face of Kate's keep it simple because when was the last time a lawyer wrote anything and kept it simple um maybe we just need an extra sentence to the effect of the board is under no obligation to accept the superintendent's recommendation Andor change the policy as a result of the complaint or recommendation I'm that may be more than we want that may be more than we want the board is of no obligation to change the the board is under no obligation to accept the superintendent's recommendation Andor change the policy change any policy as a result of a complaint or recommendation and I'm not wted to that please word Smith that to death guys that may be overly lawyering it's been known to happen you know so in thisio too much yeah I think it is and it's an it's it's got a negative connotation to it yeah it does it's kind of mean-spirited yeah um I'm trying to I'm trying to make it unambiguous but you're right it is a little it's a little in your is okay but I we may want to I mean the tone may may not be good the board may I mean it's a very as it was written it's very it's it's not holding us to anything it's the board May then no it's not review the policy amend or refer the policy for review if necessary or repeal the policy if appropriate and of the how about the board May comma if it deems it if it chooses comma then review the policy or something or May the board May comma but is not obligated to then review the policy or something something like that yeah but not obligated to yeah I like that or they must consider like you must consider it but you're not obligated to do anything actually I don't think any I don't think we can say must because I don't think we can bind a future board on what they have to consider or not the board may but not obligated to review the policy and then or refer the but is not obligated to yeah I think I think we need the is but is not yeah but is under no obligation to yeah would that might work it might be better thank you for playing scrier Kevin it's not a problem Kevin can I just make one suggestion um you stated here that it must be signed I just think you need to put a signature line on that form so that okay okay I'll I'll add this and a date yes good idea I think in that sentence where it says the board May comma but is under no obligation to I think we need a comma after the two right here Joe I think so does that read better yes I think so I yeah I think I think that works okay okay and and that's not as in your face and um Kevin when we spoke you said you had um looked around at other what other districts had and there were some similar to this floating around right right so this one um was actually similar to one in Ellington um for some reason that one came up a few times when I was looking up policies on appeals and and so I had had you know certainly used those but this is straight from c um but Elton for again for some reason is one that came up a few times when I continue to try to Google and do a couple of searches um for the 1312 but there were a couple of districts that had the both 1312 and 131 12.2 were they similar yes yes they pretty much adopted the language from cap they did okay so I will go back here and if it's okay I'll just say that we'll go to item number I'm sorry Rachel did you need to speak to are committee members comfortable with bringing this to the full board can I have a vote Yes yes any obligations I mean obligations opposition Jo Joe said we're not obligated got that word on my brain okay great need like a lawyer's note just like a mom's note or something so this will go to um the agenda at our next meeting for our first reading okay thank you Mr Walston all right thank you so the last one is cave audit and next steps I'm G to close this out so I can see you and speak to you um we have and it's it's been a while since we've you know outside of our emergency policies it's been a while since we have um reconvened as a board to focus on policies um in preparation for this meeting today I was trying to get in touch with cave because U for for those of you who may recall um we had partnered with C went in contract with cape um policies and I'm sorry cap um to work on our policies um they conducted an audit for us I believe it was 2019 now um and and you know we received the feedback from the audit and um they revealed you know the outstanding policies um you know we were pretty much in um you know we pretty much had all of the policies uh that were mandated by the district and but they did have a number of recommended policies for us they broke it down by series um and then as caves processed they literally push out hard copies of the series one series at a time so I get 100 hundreds of copies in my office and now I have thousands of copies of my office because it's you know they contined to mail them over the last several months um so I have I have reached out to cave and asked them if number one the policies that are have already been approved that this board has approved over the years um because part of the agreement is not only will they conduct the audit uh but they would also post our policies online so that those could be reflected electronically um the agreement that we had entered in with them was once the entire series all the serieses are completed then they would posted online and so the question I have asked and I I just left a message yesterday so forgive me um so I'm still waiting to get back uh to Vinnie but um the the question that I left for him is can we start posting the policies that we already have approved post them now and then perhaps monthly we can update anything that the board has approved and continue to post that up online um that our our our online system to access the policies electronically I would imagine or frustration for the public uh because they're frustrating for us as employees in the district um and it's really we're kind of limited by you know by our by our own system right now and so um we're asking Vinnie to get some help it's probably going to it could be at an additional cost um because now they would be working to upload these things monthly so I will find out what that cost might be I'm not going to um I'm not gonna suggest that he charge us more but I'm anticipating that the cost will be more um because it's it's very different than doing it all at once versus doing it monthly um but if it's okay with the board I am going to ask vny what the cost would be so at least all of our work can be reflected into the man you know into our database um and then after we you know every month as we continue to complete policies we can have them updated online for everyone to see um I I also need to get some feedback from the board and Rachel and um Kathy uh Miss Cooper so just before this the new the board turned over and we had some new faces on the board welcome um we had I I remember R and Li we were sitting in that conference room with a whole series of policies I mean I I mean I I regret now like I Pro probably overwhelmed everyone on the subcommittee that's probably why they didn't come back and and I brought hundreds of policies and ped books for everyone and and and then we start and and aggressively and and I regret that now I had a conversation with Rachel about this yesterday um and regretfully I think tried to overwhelm and it was a little bit too ambitious in trying to get too many policies approved at once and so but I do need to get a feel from this board from this committee uh what do you feel like we have an appetite for um certainly some policies like tonight can move a little faster um um uh I'll just say this quickly and and Rachel will probably smile when I mention this we had a conversation with the previous board and there was we had three meetings we couldn't agree on well the board the committee couldn't agree on whether or not board members can participate electronically or not and and and and the committee felt strongly some felt strongly they should and some felt strongly that they should be there um and you know meanwhile a year later here here all of us are you know participating in this in this platform um but I'm I don't wanna this is my long way of saying I don't want to introduce five or eight policies and it be counterproductive and so is five a good number is should we stay in the three to five Zone and I don't know Rachel maybe I think we had a good process going we can kind of review what those are and so if you say hey we can do all five I think this looks good and I I I just want to get a feel of what this board might feel comfortable this committee might feel comfortable with I have my thoughts but I'd like to open it up to others first maybe it just depends on what what they are some policies are going to be quicker than others some are short some are we got to do it anyway guys it's the law other ones maybe it requires more conversation so maybe we have to kind of pick and choose and cherry pick you know there may be one where we're going to get one you know if it's electronic access to meetings when we're live that's going to engender a lot of conversation maybe that's the only one we do that month if we have five that are like the ones we did tonight we could we could have done 10 of these right I mean it's you know no problem how good are we at predicting which of those policies are gonna elicit that kind of conversation well that's the that's the challenge now ain't it so I wonder if there's like a procedural thing that we could do Rachel in the meetings where we say like okay we've had you know X number minutes of conversation and it seems like people are you know we need a longer conversation about it so we're going to table it for table it so that we have like a certain number that we line up each time and then if if we run into like a roadblock policy because you know we're just having trouble working it out we just table it and yeah that sounds reasonable sounds like a good plan Kathy you had something to say I just think that as the chairperson you know what our bandwidth is you should you know determine which ones would take a really long time to discuss and come to an agreement you can guess the train Rex a good guess at the training okay yeah so maybe that's some free work that heaven and I can do before we bring it to the the committee um I think like shooting for five but I mean it all depends and let's review them before we put the agenda together um and then if we have to table you know well we can decide to do that during our our [Music] meeting I think that was a good suggestion Kate thank you Mr wat since nobody asked me c I I I like the idea of three to five you keep your time within an hour hour 15 minutes and um not to go over if you feel like you're gonna get stalemate like Joe said we just uh tap it until the next time uh but work on three to five each meeting and see where we go sounds good okay so 15 every meeting you got it Miss Cooper five hours straight holiday committee meeting I love it okay thank you I have a very large coffee cup I'll have it ready absolutely thank you um and so we want to continue with our we had a I thought we had a good system you know before everything came to a halt in March um a year ago so um if we could continue our once uh a month a first Wednesday of the month um at 6: PM um and to continue the audit um was there lost my train of thought um was there anything else no it was those three this evening um I'll have some more information from Vinnie um and I can come back and see if there's an additional cost to that request see if we can get them posted immediately instead of waiting till they're all done keev Kevin if they were gonna post them for us anyway they're still posting the same amount of stuff they're just spending 20 minutes now instead of of seven hours in a year so if they try to charge us more maybe we push back on that a little bit okay I appreciate it Joe just a thought no I agree I agree may not go anywhere I agree nor nor does it make sense for a board to have to wait until the entire process is completed anyway um but s negotiated a really good price so as as he's really good at great yeah that'd be nice to have them online it's our our um Antiquated system is you know frustrating for board members as well um and when I first came on the board I was given a you know um a a hard copy of some of the manual but it wasn't complete and I didn't I wasn't aware of that at the time um so I I mean I have some old old policies but I don't I don't even know if they're uh they've been updated since then so that would be nice to have and to easily navigate so appreciate that work on it absolutely anything else from um committee members or or Mr wson Mr that's it for me okay a motion to adjourn so moved a second hi all in hi me now 6:49 thank you everyone good good night everybody coer thank you thank you thank you Kelly thank you Rachel have a good night everyone thank you bye bye

good afternoon everyone i am mr davidson i am the principal of the freshman academy at danbury high school and thank you all for joining us today to talk a little bit about danbury high school i have a few people that i really want to introduce to you let me share my screen so that you can see them while i introduce them i have mrs ondeck with me school counselor at danbury high school i have miss harris another school counselor danbury high school oh sorry about that mr rodriguez is another one of our counselors she's out right now but miss isaac is filling in for her ms carlson is our director of school counseling and we have dr roy who is our early college opportunity director all right so let's get this show on the road i think i'm sharing my screen yes okay i think we're good so you guys are the class of 2025 which is pretty exciting it makes me feel old because each year i say the same thing and each year that number continues to get higher so welcome incoming class of 2025 to your 9th grade year at cambridge high what are we going to talk about today i want to talk about kind of um what is the freshman academy what's the registration process to get you know going freshman year what does that look like what supports we have available what extensions we have available for you dr roy is going to talk quickly about the tamarind early college opportunity which is our deco program and then kind of what's next going forward after you log off today throughout the presentation if you have questions you can take your phone and you can scan that qr code and you'll be able to get to the form to ask us a question at the end of the presentation i will go to my computer and i will read all the questions that you guys answered and hopefully answer any questions you may have i have a couple a couple questions that the other school has answered that hopefully you guys will touch on if not i'll circle back and answer those two but if you scan that with your phone it'll open up that that um qr code will open up the formula so you can answer that question so the freshman academy our freshman academy is our transition program into ninth grade we found that it's really hard to go from middle school to high school without something kind of in the middle and that's what our freshman academy is we have a team approach similar to what you have in middle school so your academic core teachers will meet to discuss you other kids in your team what they're doing as a team so that they can all stay on the same page and support you the best they can we have additional supports only offered to freshmen our teachers have common planning time we have eight teams in the freshman academy you're able to take college prep or honors courses and i'll explain what that means a little bit and our counselors are specially trained to help you through the transition process they understand what it takes to go from 8th grade to 9th grade and they understand what it takes to be successful going forward so they have special skills to help you out in that area we just opened up a brand new freshman academy which was pretty cool we had 26 classrooms new science labs gym locker room there's ac we call that our g building it's a really nice space the majority of freshmen will have three quarters of their classes in the new building and some will actually have all of their core classes in the new building but everyone is at least getting an experience over there in some capacity most of the core classes like i said will be in the new building and if you take electives those classes will probably not be in the new building unless you take a health class a couple of those are in there too so what do you need to know about danbury high school well it's a little different than middle school because we have a prescribed set of courses that you have to take in order to graduate everyone at tambury high school has to take four english credits three and a half social studies four math three science um you have to satisfy all of those areas in order to to move out of danbury high school and graduate you could have a averages across the board you can do awesome you could fill your schedule but if you don't take one of these things then you're not gonna you're not gonna graduate so if you miss a health credit you could have hundreds across the board and everything but you're not going to graduate because you didn't take health so you have to satisfy each one of these credits going through your four years of high school so you may say wow mr davidson i'm kind of scared don't worry we have counselors that are going to help you register for those classes to make sure that you have everything you need in order to graduate on time and the good thing about it is freshman year there's not a ton of decisions to make you will need to make some decisions whether you take honors classes or college prep level classes so whatever you choose in english you also have to choose in social studies which is our world studies course and whenever you choose in math you have to choose the same level in biology you can choose honors in english and social studies and college prep in math and science but those two inside of this little box i have here the the blue box lewis gray box and the orange box those have to be the same and that allows us to keep our our teams in place so that we have enough classes to offer each team and our and our teachers you know don't have crazy crazy numbers of kids in their classes um freshman year you also have if you need the support you're going to be taking a reading or a math lab course if you don't need that support that won't be in your schedule we recommend that all freshmen take health in phys ed and you have some electives that are available to you not all the electives in school but a lot of them everyone always asks what's the difference between honors and college prep well college prep what you learn is going to prepare you for college so we're going to teach you the skills and the content necessary to go on to college if you so choose to do so honors classes you're going to learn the same things but you're going to be asked to go deeper you're going to ask to do more and you're going to have a heavier workload oftentimes we ask you to do more outside of the classroom in our honors classes so that's something to think about talk to your teachers talk to your counselor talk to your parents and decide when you register if college prep classes or honors classes are the best place for you to start and one of the good things about tanbury high is we don't lock you into that for the rest of your career we don't even lock you into that for the rest of the year so during the first 10 days of the school year you can choose to change so if you're in a college prep class and you say i really want to challenge myself some more switch to an honors class and if you're an honors class you decide wow this is really a little too challenging for me you can make an adjustment and go to the college prep version of that class as well and whatever you take freshman year you don't have to stay in there for for sophomore junior senior year we let you choose whichever level you want to take you know given the information that you have so you're not locked into one track you don't have to take the same level all the way through through high school uh the electives you get to take we have them in just about every area anything you could be interested in i think we have a class for you at danbury high school some of them aren't open yet until you become an upperclassman but we have a ton open just for freshmen we have one ap course that's open um ap computer science principles when you take that course you learn about computer science and then as you move on you can you can go take more ap classes as you become a sophomore junior and senior but we have just about every elective available to freshmen as well so a sample schedule we have a block schedule at the end very high we have eight days we have b days and you'll see block one two and three those classes alternate from a day to b day but that fourth block stays the same so you'll see fourth block personal finance our fourth block meets every single day whether it's a day or b day it is shorter than the other ones um so we have you can take up to seven classes so blocks one two and three for eight and b days they're six plus that fourth block um which is that seventh class that you can take behind if you're curious about what courses we have to offer because i know i flashed them up on the screen really really quick go to our course of study guide it's right on our website under students course guide and you can choose one of our three different language versions of that course guide so you can read about different classes you might want to take so you're ready to request those classes now when the registration window opens you'll go into powerschool type your name in and you'll click on the little uh class registration button now the classes you choose are not necessarily the classes you're going to get in all cases so you may choose you know what i really want to take american sign language awesome it counts as a world language credit but maybe it's there's no room in that class maybe you'll have to wait till sophomore year to take that i guarantee whatever core classes you take english math science social studies will get you into i can't guarantee all the electives that you choose will be on your schedule when you get it in the summer but you'll go through and you'll pick whichever classes you want to take english social studies math science remembering to choose either honors honors or college prep for those classes once you select all those click ok i'm sure you've done this before so it looks kind of familiar you do the same thing with your electives and then we'll get all of those course requests and we'll build a schedule we'll say wow we need seven sections of engineering or we need 15 sections of guitar because everyone wants to take guitar and we'll build our schedule using the teachers we have and the requests that we get to hopefully satisfy as many of those requests as possible academic supports i think it's important to talk a little bit about what do you do if the transition to high school isn't as smooth as you thought it was going to be what if you struggle a little bit that's okay freshman year is so important to get you through that we have some additional supports embedded in there so that we can help you the first one is our read 180 class followed up with our math 18 class um those are intensive uh support classes to help you increase your skills in reading and mathematics if you need them we have flex time which i think is one of the coolest things about danbury high that we added a couple years ago flex time everyone on monday they go and decide what they want to do for the rest of the week during flex it may be you have a test coming up so you want to meet with that teacher to get an extra study time it may be you missed a class last week and you missed an assignment so you want to meet with the teacher and work on that assignment so you schedule them during flex time it could be you don't have anything to work on so you want to go down and do yoga in the new gym whatever it may be there's something for you in flex so flex time is really a time where where you can use it and utilize it for what you need whether it's supports whether it's extensions whether it's just a check in with a teacher but you dictate what you want to do during that flex time so students on monday will schedule what they're doing in flex for the rest of the week to to make sure that they're you know where they need to be academically and even with extensions as well we have directed study hall if regular study hall is not is not the best setting for you we have directed ones up with me in the lab before office and we have an after school tutoring program we have a twilight program if you don't do well in the first semester of a course we allow you to retake that course after school so that you can have the right number of credits to move on to sophomore year we have a credit recovery program you'll work through recovering credit card at your own pace and we have a pretty intensive srbi intervention process to help support students in all of the classes so what if you don't need any support you come to dairy high you're ready to go things come fairly easy for you well then i challenge you to to challenge yourself we have extensions available we have 26 ap courses that we that we offer 21 of our kids do take ap classes and those ap classes equal college credits in the future so if you transfer your grades from an ap course when you enroll in college oftentimes and most of the time colleges will give you college credits so you'll be three or four or five or six or however many you transfer closer to graduating college because you took classes in high school which is pretty cool um flex allows like i said for extensions or enrichment so if it's something that you're interested in that's outside of the curriculum and a teacher is offering a flex session in that area go ahead challenge yourself there um our deco opportunities is a great extension to to challenge yourself outside of the four core academic areas we have honor societies that students can join we have an accelerated summer course program if you wanted to take geometry over the summer you certainly could and we have opportunities to do that our concept upward bound program we have tons and tons of athletics clubs and at the end of the day i challenge students to become more than just students at danbury high school you don't have to join a club you don't have to be involved in in athletics but i think it's a great way to get as much as you can out of your high school experience so i challenge everybody don't just come here and be a student don't just come here and take classes be more than that get involved as much as you can a great way to to get the most out of your high school experience dr roy is going to talk a little bit about the early college opportunity dr roy hi everyone so the danbury early college opportunity is an experience of danbury high school where you are able to work on an associate degree in computer information sciences while you're working on your danbury high school requirements and so you're duly enrolled at naugatuck valley community college and danbury high school so you might think wow that's a lot it is a lot but we make it work by being able to offer you classes for the college right during the school day at the high school we can offer them after school we offer them during the summer um so it's really a great way to kind of push yourself and we have all kinds of students who apply for the deco program it's not necessarily you know you don't have to necessarily be somebody who gets straight a's all the time or anything we we do have a wide variety of students and we just offer a bunch of different supports to help people be successful it's a great way to earn college credits again while you're in high school or to see if college is going to be the right next step for you so for our freshmen um what you would need to do is right now actually starting march 8th you will be able to apply via a lottery so it's an online lottery system on the deca website we'll put it up on the danbury high school website as well we take we can take up to 60 students in the program and then what happens is for your freshman year we would have one of your elective spots taken up with a class called workplace learning and during that workplace learning class you're learning how to be a professional you're learning the soft skills we call them of business which is writing resumes and formal emails and letters and you can see here in this particular picture that mr davidson's showing these students are all receiving certificates from nagatok valley community college or an associate degree from naugatuck valley community college um in this case i think we we had different levels where the students were getting upwards of 30 or more college credits while they were at the high school so it's a really cool opportunity we have mentors that come in from a variety of different industries within danbury and they come in and they talk to students they do whole whole class presentations um we have ment we have matched kids up with one to one with mentors in the industry it really just depends on what you're looking for in a mentor and then we also have students go out and do internships with different industries in in danbury so it's a really cool experience the first thing we typically do and last summer we weren't able to do it because of covid but typically invites students to come into danbury high school three days during august to kind of get to know the building we do some team building we get to play some fun games follow your schedule those kinds of things just as a way to kind of ease the transition into high school so what you need to do is check out the danbury early college opportunity website and [Music] you can see different classes that you might want to take through the deco program apply via lottery and i will let you know um mid-march mid to end of march whether or not you were accepted into the program if you have any questions feel free to reach out and you can leave me a message or shoot me an email thanks guys thank you dr wright so what does that mean for you guys um going forward our registration schedule from here on out is we we've been to west side we've been to broadview and we've been to rogers park um from from here the next big thing is 3-1 that is our school fair that's an opportunity for you as freshmen to come and learn about all aspects of danbury high school maybe not just me uh here talking to you about being a freshman but learning about clubs learning about sports learning about the different organizations all the things that are offered at danbury high and and right when that's over we'll open the registration window for you to start picking classes or requesting classes so we can build your schedule in the fall um we'll talk to the private school students coming in at 3 15 and that registration window is is open almost to the end of march right around when when dr roy will get back to you about about the deco program so the first one's done if you have questions and you probably will and and i don't answer them today or you forget to ask them today reach out to us these emails and phone numbers are all on our website you can ask your counselor for help and they can get you in contact with us um but but reach out don't don't leave an answer because you think ah it's not important or or that you know it's a silly question whatever maybe ask us i want you to feel as comfortable as possible coming to denver high all right so you guys have actually done an awesome job asking questions more than any other middle school so nice job um so i'm going to jump to some questions the first one we have uh what kind of specials do you have we don't really have specials we have what are called electives so you can take an elective in all those areas i showed you business family consumer science art music um all those different areas our electives are kind of like specials but we don't make you take you know not everyone has to take gym and health and all those things that you may music whatever you may have taken to middle school or elementary school as a special we let you choose yours or request the electives you want in your schedule the next question should i be nervous absolutely not um i think you should be excited it's a really good opportunity to come here and see what danbury high is all about and our kids do some fantastic things and i imagine you guys are going to be the next group of kids that do fantastic things so don't be nervous be excited um do you have to join a club in high school no you definitely don't you can be as involved or not involved as you want but i feel you're going to get more out of the experience the more involved you are what sports can freshmen into their first year we have a freshman version of just about every sport at every high so football baseball basketball cheerleading lacrosse field hockey they all have freshman versions of those teams so you have an opportunity to compete against other freshmen from other schools and interact with other freshmen at tambury high school if the skill level is not appropriate maybe you should be playing varsity i assure your coach will move you up and you'll get to play a little bit of varsity time as well but we have sports in just about every area available to students that come in next up what classes will i get to take and pick awesome awesome question um you'll be able to take your four core classes that you that you request english math science social studies i promise you i'll get you those um the electives the way it works is all students at danbury high request the class or the classes they want to take and then when we build the schedule we look at what the seniors want we fill them into the classes and then we look at what the juniors want and the sophomores and then we look at the freshmen so it's not guaranteed that you'll get the classes that you want but we usually do a pretty good job of getting classes that people want to be in to fit into their schedule so you'll see once we make that all work we'll send out schedules usually in early august and you'll see you know what classes you're going to take it may not show you which block you have them but it'll show you which classes you requested and you're registered for what's next is it going to be a lot different from what we do now yes and no i think it's it's it's going to be different in its high school now so we expect more out of our students but you're still going to be a part of the danbury public schools community so it's going to be the same in that capacity we do ask you to do things differently which is okay and we do ask you just to you know do more as you as you grow up and become more responsible but i don't think it's going to be like mind-blowingly different than what you have in middle school probably one of the biggest differences is if you're in middle school and you don't do well in your math class in seventh grade you're still gonna go to eighth grade most of the time um at denver high it's not it's not like that so if you don't pass algebra one or algebra two or whatever math class you're in you're taking that class again next year so if you don't pass algebra one you don't get to go take algebra two because you didn't pass algebra one you'll have to take that again next year so it's really really important that you work hard and pass all those classes that you can graduate on time um what is the school's dress code oh we ask you to dress appropriately uh i don't need to see you know your midsection and in short shorts and things like that um we do have some rules that's all found in our handbook so you can take a look at that to be ready to come here in the appropriate attire is there a hockey team you can play on absolutely a hockey team we have a co-op with brookfield and bethel and and we do pretty well in that league can i take honors one year in college prep another year awesome question yes you can whatever you take this year doesn't doesn't mean you have to take the same thing next year so if you take honors classes all four core classes this year next year you could take all four college prep whatever you decide is the most appropriate thing for you and like i said before talk to your counselors talk to your parents get a good idea as to what you should be doing you know don't just jump into it without doing your homework is college prep easier to start in freshman year or junior year i can't answer that one it's really not any easier to start any time choosing the right one for you is really the most important part of that so if you feel you're up to the challenge of honors classes then try honors classes if you don't feel you're up to that challenge then take college prep classes and like i said we can change in the first 10 days of school to make sure it's an appropriate fit um lots of questions here when our class registration is going to open we open that on 3-1 and it's open through most of march how many electives can you take well you can take electives kind of as many as you want so long as it fits into your schedule but freshman year you have to take those four core classes english math science social studies and we ask you to take pe in health so you really only have room for for one or two electives freshman year but as you take more classes and become a senior you'll have a lot more room for electives dr roy someone asked what is computer information technology you want to chime in for that one sure uh basically you're just learning different aspects of computers so it could be we offer classes in cyber security we offer classes in programming we offer classes in project management in database design in i said networking all kinds of different aspects of computers so um computer information technology it all kind of that's the big umbrella that all of those classes would fall under thank you next question do you have guitar classes yes we do we actually have a modern rock band class and we have acoustic guitar classes um if you're interested in that i need to learn how to play the guitar better so maybe i should take one of those classes next class do honors classes get college credit um most of the time now we do have a couple dual enrollment classes that are not ap classes that get credit for college but just because you're taking an honors class does not necessarily mean that you're going to get college credit some do a very limited one do do clubs give credit no clubs don't give credit they're just help you expand yourself and be more part of the school school community will we have the same counselors all four years in high school excellent question no you will have your freshman counselor and those freshman counselors are divided up by team so if you're on team one everyone on team one is the same counselor you're on team five everyone has the same concern on team five once you leave freshman year you go to a different council so you only have a freshman counselor when you're a freshman and then you get your new counselor sophomore year for sophomore junior and soon what time does school end in a non-pandemic year we get out at two o'clock how many credits do you need for college you need 25 credits to graduate danbury high school to go to college if you want to um i'm not going to answer that one do you have to take a world language course yes you do what about transportation um yeah we'll send a bus to your house what if you get lost good question you probably will get lost that's okay everyone gets lost the first couple times in january high school if you get lost ask for help someone will get to the right spot i promise you there's no pool and there's no d5 those two things do not exist so if someone tells you go up to d5 and go past the pool they're just messing with you one thing regarding transportation too mr davidson is uh wednesdays and thursdays we have late buses typically we do typically we have a late bus anybody who stays for our after school program for twilight for some of the clubs involved in the after school program and for tutoring we have a bus that will bring you home so that you know you don't have to walk home or your parents don't have to leave work early to come get you so that's a really good opportunity to get that extra time and to do something be it extra help um be a twilight program be it tutoring or or involvement with clubs um national honor society question mark yes we have one there are great requirements that you have to meet in order to in order to get into the honor society and you'll have to apply for it but definitely a cool opportunity what languages are available so languages available to take courses um satisfy world language requirements are spanish french italian and american sign language in chinese oh in chinese those are the courses that we have that will satisfy your old language requirement you can take multiple years there you don't have to stop after just one a lot of colleges love to see two or three years in the same language we also have spanish for heritage speakers for students who have a spanish-speaking background at home right on thank you dr ryan um world language classes another question about that when do we wake up and go home well our school hours are 7 20 to 2 o'clock i hope you'd get up a little before 7 20 so you can get here on time and don't leave early because 2 o'clock is when we're done all right i got time for one two more questions um can i take honors one year and cosplay another answer that one do you have an av club um we we do we yes yeah we absolutely do that's something you can talk to mr miller about he's a really good person to talk to in that area and are classes weighted differently yes they are so ap honors college prep they all impact your your grade point average and your gpa differently so when we do that calculation you get more weight for for an honors class or an ap class than you would for a college prep class but the the goal is to do as well as you can in the most challenging class you can to impact your gpas and all that information is in the student handbook which is available on our website for you guys yeah so any of the questions i didn't answer go take a look at that student handbook and go take a look at the course of study guide and if you can't find your answer in there ask your school counselor or email one of us and we'll be glad to answer okay so i think i took up all of my time thank you guys for the wonderful questions um and i look forward to seeing you on 3-1 at our school fair thanks

have a couple that are are raising their hands uh first is uh cecilia yes i'm here good evening am i free to start speaking yes you may good evening ausd superintendent dr ortega ausd board members colleagues and friends my name is cecilia deletori and i am a current teacher and parent of two students presently enrolled in azusa unified school district at this time i would like to voice my concerns in regarding the recent parent survey returning to school i acknowledge that the survey does not inform parents the possibility that students will possibly be put into cohorts start and end time of class sessions could possibly be within a four-hour class period students possibly carrying all their textbooks and chromebooks to school and to home no recess breaks and including all students to follow all the county guidelines including wearing masks at all times no no small group instruction by the teachers the reason for me sharing those concerns is because a few parents have addressed me in regards to the return to school process and schedule i acknowledge that in the parent survey it never informed or referenced students returning to school maybe a four hour session for example it could possibly be 8 to 11 am not a full regular day for a current fifth grader being 8 10 am to 2 35 pm there in lies issues if parents are working and are unable to provide daycare services for a child or in this sense chilled red i hope you the superintendent and board members consider these concerns and planning to share with parents and the community in the weeks to come following their return to school again i thank you for your time and your listening ear and i hope that you all stay safe and stay healthy thank you so much thank you cecilia we move on to our next one miss lawson good evening board president members of the board superintendent guest and cabinet my name is tavia lawson i'm the chair to the east san gabriel valley special education local plan area community advisory committee myself marina harper azuza parent representative and vice chair to the cac and leslie castiano's azusa parent alternate and publications chair to the cac are our social media pages on facebook instagram and twitter thank you for your time thank you miss lawson we'll move on to amber f hi thank you for your time this evening um i am a parent of a student in the azusa unified school district and i just wanted to voice a couple concerns i have about schools reopening as well the survey was a very nice way to get for you guys to get some parent feedback um i have some concerns about parents not being able to access the survey um as a member of the reorganization team i we reached out to some parents to see if they knew about the reorganization of the schools and we found that a large chunk of our our community didn't know that this was even being talked about despite the numerous emails phone calls from the schools things from the district we found that a lot of parents would actually like if it's possible for a flyer to be mailed home before the children used to get them in their backpacks and that was a good way for to make sure that parents saw information and since the students aren't currently in school they're not seeing these papers and with something as important as reopening the schools i feel that it's important for every parent to have a voice in this situation and if something as simple as mailing out a flyer that says you know please go to this website to fill out this survey might be helpful for those that don't have access for whatever reason it may be to the emails or even the school notices that are being sent out um also as a parent of a younger student i'm concerned about my child going back to school full-time for a couple reasons they're not very good at social distancing at young ages and having my child be stuck in a little in a room at a desk not being able to mix with his cohorts is really disheartening to me he needs to socialize and i feel like this would be more of a punishment for them that they won't be able to interact with their students as they would normally also i'm concerned for teachers parents or family members living with with these students that if somebody comes to school sick teachers haven't had an opportunity to be vaccinated neither has any of the staff at the school nor some of the parents uh my family has been super safe this whole entire time we see nobody we go nowhere and somehow our family still got coveted and my our first interaction with it was an urgent care visit where the doctor assured us that it was not coveted he would not test because they had a limited amount of tests so for two weeks if we were in school my son would have gone to school and possibly exposed others because we were told that this was not covid and it wasn't until two weeks later where other members in the family got sick that we noticed you know no we need to get tested and yes this was covid and i worry that this situation could happen with others and getting children sick in the schools closing down or even the classrooms closing down would disrupt the children being in class thank you for your time thank you amber we move on to miss diana ochoa good evening board members superintendent and cabinet my name is diana ochoa i am a parent and a classified employee with the zeus unified school district and i'm here today regarding our fields i first want to say thank you so much for these beautiful fields that have been placed at gladstone and azusa our kids have waited so long for this and i know when they're going to be able to get on those fields and play that their you know self-esteem and their spirit is just gonna be lifted so much um but it does concern me because in the past we've had people come on our fields that are not students that are adults and um how they get on our fields i don't know i don't know if it's somebody has a key gets on it and and there it goes um but i've seen it in the past and now i'm starting to see it now again especially at azusa high school um so it really concerns me that you know our kids haven't even been able to access these fields but yet we have these adults coming on the field of playing soccer um i've already seen people walking the tracks with their dogs which kind of concerns me about the sanitation of the fields for our students and then also our custodians you know the messes that they have to pick up out there these fields were built for our students and they need to maintain for our students you know you go to others drive by other districts schools and you don't see all this you know um people playing you know their activities as it's a park and recreation and i really hope that that doesn't happen at our schools because these kids really deserve these fields to stay clean sanitary for them and to be feel safe and make it their own field where you know these are high schools this is not parks and recs um so please please look into this um and i hope that you know before um it gets worse because i've even seen you know vehicles in the past you know that have been on our fields and um you know now that we have these beautiful fields i'd hate for those get to be ruined and then we have to go out as a district and spend more money to repair things and fix things um so i ask you to please look into this for our students and again thank you for these wonderful fields and i know i can't wait to see these kids playing on them because their smiles are going to be from ear to ear so thank you for that have a good evening you can hear me because i can't see anything other than the screen can you hear me i think i muted myself hello yes angel okay all right sorry thanks this is now i know what it's like from the kids point of view um i just wanted to take a minute or two just to say you know i agree with everything everybody has said about coming back to school i know there's a lot of concern about the safety and about the vaccination um i just kind of want to put it out there as far as my concern about how much less time when we if we go if and when we go back to hybrid which i know people want a cell to go back but i feel like it's going to be a disruption because it'll be like students having to start school all over again like the first day and as it is we're already having to cut our curriculum to a certain degree to fit in the in the virtual learning window and now we're going to go back to a hybrid and we're going to have even less time with the kids um and to have them stay focused and with asynchronous learning whether you admit to it or not the kids are not very effective during asynchronous learning they do not do the work as much as they should and um as much as they want to see each other i don't think they realize that they may not be seeing who they think they're going to see they're not going to see their friends uh necessarily and if they are it'll be from a distance so that's my concern is that we are going to lose some quality education time that we're already losing and that will also you know that kids are not going to stay apart not just little kids but the big kids too they're not going to keep distance and so there is all those concerns and i do hope you do take them into consideration and i just wanted to voice my opinion on that and put it out there thank you thank you miss angel we'll go ahead and move to miss meg savella can you hear me yes awesome um board uh cabinet um i appreciate you taking the time to listen to all of those who came before me and and me as well i also appreciate you leading by example and doing an in-person meeting i i think that takes a lot of courage and so i i appreciate that i want to express my concern for the surveys that are going out i think it's really important that we do them and i'm very thankful that our district is surveying parents about return to school and school reopening and things like that however i really feel that parents need to understand what it is that they're coming back to before they take the survey and are educated as as to what that means in order for the district to plan and i say that because upon return we're going to have cohorts of kids and actually cohorts are related to special education more i should call them groups we're going to have groups of kids maybe group a group b but in order to plan effectively and be good stewards of the money that we're receiving um and to delegate where those monies are going to go we need to know how many kids are coming back how many will stay in distance learning how to separate those kids out into groups to best serve their needs and i don't think that parents have been given enough information to understand that their children will be sitting four to six feet apart that they're going to be behind a cubicle style plexiglass barrier that the kids will have to stay in their seats the majority of the time that they're actually there and that the group that's not there will be doing asynchronous work without their teacher and knowing what the differences in approach are are we going to wind up going back yes do we need to have a good transition plan for re-entry yes but i believe that in order for the district to plan it's best for the parents to know that recess means going outside only with those 12 kids that are in your group and only playing with them and no one else with their own ball six feet apart and not interacting in the same way that they would in a regular brick and mortar also knowing that one of their kids could be on a group day and another on b group day and what that means for planning for their daycare for drop off and pick up for parents who need to work and i i just think we need to educate them so that they can best make the decision that's right for their family and the district can make the best decisions to to disseminate funds to organize kids for their education and to readjust with the least amount of disruption possible so thank you for taking time to listen to me i appreciate it stay safe and healthy have a good evening thank you miss maxa villa is that um all of the hands that have been raised lika from this yes great we'll go ahead and now move on to 7.1 commons reports and requests by the board of education we can go ahead and get started with board member rodriguez pena okay good evening everyone [Music] yes just after that [Music] that was really this accreditation thank you good evening i'm excited to announce that we have just wrapped up our first counting collections and choral accounting book club and we had over 30 pk through second grade teachers participate in five after school sessions this is part of the work that we're doing with california education partners in our collaborative is called preschool through third grade coherence and collaboration um something really exciting that came out of that work is that from the book club we had teachers that volunteered their classrooms as they implemented the accounting collections and they opened up their classrooms for other teachers to come in and observe and so it was a really awesome awesome learning opportunity um super grateful for all the teachers who opened up their classrooms so we could come in and observe student learning and and watch the process and learn ourselves um i want to thank the team uh that has been leading this work and we're also very excited because we have um more teachers that have asked for another opportunity for this so we're going to be launching a second county collections book club so we're excited about that and then finally um this afternoon was our second diversity equity and inclusion committee meeting and i really i want to shout out to the 11 students from diversify our narrative who came and led the conversation um advocating for racial and educational equity and i want to thank caitlin arianis elena jaramillo hector hernandez althea ito carolina dominguez emily ruiz yara chavez sydney ramon priscilla ortiz zamora natalie de la cruz and andrea mendes for their tremendous presentation and really leading the conversation with the committee today um we also had our azusa city library partners um laila hansen and ginger atunas come and talk about the work that they've been doing um with respect to disrupting institutional racism as they look at their library programs and their collections as well so this has been a great opportunity for us to be able to partner um with the city library as well and bring them into the conversation as we do our work together thank you and good evening board of education and the sousa community i just want to thank the board of education for taking the steps um to have our meetings in person thank you um good evening ford and my fellow members of cabinet and thank maria um and nutrition services and her team who continues to work tirelessly to provide nutritious meals and i don't know if everyone has noticed that we've been providing fresh fruits and vegetables and last week we had strawberries and this week we're going to have more grapefruits and maria and her team are finding innovative ways that we could continue to provide that to our community as well as see how we can all have more offerings like open up more sites and more offering time so we can better serve our community and lastly i want to thank meghna and her team and we've had vacancies in our fiscal department and all the csa staff without a question have stepped up feel the need until we're able to feel that vacancy so just overall just appreciate the quality camaraderie the teamwork and dedication that they continue to provide so we can serve our students thank you we'll go ahead and move to to 9.1 east san gabriel valley regional occupational program stacy arietta who are here with me tonight also we could not do this work without them they definitely leave the charge and i just want to let the board know and that we are refocused on our purpose and that is to provide high quality cte pathways with measurable student outcomes to our partner district so we want to accomplish this by working hand in hand with you and providing concierge level service to all of our schools and i want you to know that we are committed to your students and their success so with that i will turn it over to miss stacy arietta our cte program manager for a short presentation thank you dr maurabito and good evening everyone i want to take just a couple minutes to present all the wonderful and exciting things going on with rop and azusa unified as it relates to cte pathways next slide please uh before i get started i'd like to mention that all of the rop pathway programs that you'll see here are uc a2g approved at azusa high school we have three pathway offerings engineering and architecture which consists of design project technology and principles of engineering principles of engineering which is emulates project lead the way we have information and communication technologies which includes principles of information technology and ap computer science and transportation which includes automotive technology and automotive technology advanced total district sections offered at azusa high or 11 and total district teachers it is a high or three next slide please at gladstone high school we offer the following four pathways health and science and medical technology within that pathway we have health careers medical pathology medical pathology advanced and medical assistant in the public services pathway we offer fire technology emergency medical services and forensic science in arts media and entertainment offering graphic arts multimedia advanced and then we offer the transportation pathway which includes automotive technology advanced this is a teach-out pathway which is why you only see the advanced program being offered here this year total rop sections offered at gladstone high school this year 24 and rop teachers are six we are planning for the upcoming 2021 and 2022 school year to incorporate capstone classes in the fire technology emergency medical services and forensic science for the following year next slide please at sierra high school we offer the following three pathways educational child family i'm sorry education child development and family which includes early childhood education early childhood education advanced public services which offers medical emergency medical services and forensic science and then the arts media and entertainment pathway which includes video production again we're looking towards incorporating our capstone courses in the emergency medical services forensic science and video production for the upcoming 2021 and 2022 school year total rop sections at sierra high school are 10 and total rop teachers are four next slide please some of the accomplishments that we just kind of wanted to um you know point out and go over is that we have been looking and working with um frank chang very closely and thank you frank for that and revamping and correcting the administration of jesuit pathway justice pathway of both our sierra high school and gladstone high school which you saw in previous slides this year we're offering the concentrator which is forensic science and for the 2021 we'll be incorporating the two capstones which work and tie with your tie with the data dashboard for the college and career indicators to ensure that they're being met within the district it's been very exciting with the implementation of new programs emergency medical services and the fire technology courses and we're definitely looking forward to growing those pathways as well to incorporate those concentrator and capstone classes both next year and we're looking forward to the recruitment strategies we have a new marketing multimedia specialist here we have flyers and videos that we'll be putting out to help grow your pathways and grow your cte programs and you know industry specific and pathway driven marketing materials and then we're very uh excited to be offering that improved customer service and more of a team approach where you have a team of individuals at rop that are going to be working directly with the azusa unified district as it relates specifically to cte and then increasing overall the number of pathway offerings over the last two years has been exciting two years has been exciting and we're definitely looking forward to continuing to grow those next slide please some things that we're looking forward to in the 2021-2022 school year is pathway audits again to review all the pathways that are currently being offered at the three schools mentioned this evening to ensure that those college and career indicators are being met for azusa unified and adding those completer courses to ensure that the fire technology students emergency medical service students and forensic students as well as video production at both the gladstone and sierra have those complete pathways and one exciting thing that miss bridget hernandez and i have been working on this year is we've been working very closely with citrus college so that we can in fall work towards offering dual enrollment within azusa unified cte programs thank you so much frank any questions board of education not at this time we can go ahead and move forward okay well thank you tomorrow and our team we really appreciate you coming this evening thank you everybody our pleasure thank you thank you thank you for the presentation frank we can go ahead and move to 9.2 covet 19 update thank you board president arianes like we have in the past uh all cabinet members will provide some updates around cobia 19 and i will begin this week the los angeles county department of public health announced this weekend that we had reached our threshold for tk schools uh to be able to reopen um latasha and her shera will share a little bit in terms of the particulars of of how and what that means but based on what we know today we are planning to submit uh our covet safety plan next week on wednesday um we plan to share those uh plans with our kobe 19 team on friday and also with our superintendent and parent roundtable next week as well it's important to note that submitting the plan is an important step in getting ready to open schools because once we submit the plan an approval from the state and or the the los angeles department of public health would signal that azusa unified school district is is ready a non-approval or some issues would signal to us that there are corrective measures that we need to take place and doing that sooner than later uh and getting that critical feedback uh only helps us uh in the district as a district um as this evolves uh more details are going to to come will be shared with the community and with parents and we are going to ensure that we're going to keep you informed and up to date as those become available at the same time we are looking to provide the opportunity for our staff to receive vaccinations here at our district of course there's a lot of things that hinge on being able to do that number one the county moving into uh 1b the phase of 1b which would encompass educators and of course availability of vaccines but when those two things do happen we're very excited to be able to move forward to offer all of our staff the opportunity to be vaccinated here at one of our campuses as you heard today in public input regarding a survey we did launch a return to school survey for both parents and staff to get first impressions about returning to school that survey closes on friday but i can share just some some some data that we have uh as of right now in terms of the parents we have over 200 or 2 200 respondents um of those respondents 27 are indicating that they want to return to in to in person 17 are saying they want to return but only if it's in a hybrid fashion um and 46 percent 46 are saying that they'd rather stay um in the current situation in distance learning in terms of our staff we have over 700 respondents uh in our staff so far 15 wanting to return to in-person instruction 16 wanting to return if it's in a hybrid fashion 59 stating that they prefer to continue with our current distance learning um this is only uh again a first run in terms of the survey but as we are getting closer and and indicators are pointing to uh to a reopening i want to assure you that we're going to be reaching out to our our parents in a more granular and detailed fashion that will explain some of the things that were brought up today during public comment so that when parents are saying yes i want to come back that they actually understand what it is that they're saying yes to we want to get a real accurate understanding of who those parents are that are wishing to come back who those parents are that are wishing to stay in a distance learning manner and that will again happen um in a more personalized uh way we're envisioning not a survey but a google form and we're envisioning that our school sites would be offering plenty of support in terms of meetings and um support documents so that when when our parents are filling out these forms that they're making informed uh that they're they're they're stating an accurate uh perception of where they where they stand good evening this thursday february 18th from 3 to 4 p.m our foothill family partners will be presenting another workshop to support our staff and it's called teaching during difficult times coping as an educator all certificated staff and all classified instructional staff are invited to attend this optional opportunity we've had many positive responses from our staff regarding this workshop series that we've had and the support that they have provided during this time thank you and the human resources department continues to work with employees as we transition to a back to work setting either at school sites in the district office hr recently communicated to all employees the expectation that employees wear a mask throughout their work day with very few exceptions these exceptions include when an employee is in a room or office alone by themselves or when the employee is at their desk or workspace eating or drinking also this weekend i recently sent out a message to employees who are 65 years of age or older to receive the covid19 vaccine this opportunity was made available through a partnership that was struck between the doherty unified school district and the city of hope so as superintendent ortega mentioned um we will be submitting our pelvic safety reopening plan um to the two entities that are required on february 24th the first entity is to the state safe for all team where we'll be submitting our cal osha prevention plan and our covet 19 school checklist the cal osha plan requires the district to outline specifically all of their safety protocols whereas the kova 19 checklist is a checklist that's provided by the state that identifies key things that we have to in place and we have to check and sign off on that additionally we will be submitting um to the la department of health the k-12 school reopening plan which also is a checklist of items that we have to have in place and we will check off all those things that we certify as well as submit the cal osha plan and the covet 19 plan now it's important to note that after we submit these we have seven days for the la department of health to give us thumbs up thumbs down um and from there we'll submit those uh checklist and then we will present all three forms to our kova 19 safety plan this friday great thank you for covered 19 update we'll go ahead and move to 9.3 i'm sorry does any of the board have any questions then we'll go ahead and move to 9.3 school reorganization update okay thank you let me see all right um so uh board of education uh as you know we have been uh participating and going through a uh school reorganization uh process with a team uh we have been keeping you up to date where we where we have been and so today is an update of where we are with uh with with that um so we met um on the third of february and this was our first meeting where we were actually starting to get input from the team members prior to this latasha had dinner had done an amazing job of guiding the team in understanding the four models and what they were we engaged the team in saying okay these are the pieces that we're thinking we want to look at the team added some additional pieces that we wanted to look at and so we went back to the drawing board to look at those pieces and so each model was then presented with all of these pieces to get a really good understanding so our objective on the third was to begin to get input from this actual team on what they had seen uh so far so on that night we participated in an lb lb protocol which focused the attention on what it was that the team members were liking about a particular model or particular models and so when they when they gave feedback on the model the reason it's called lblb is because their sentence frames were i like this model because or the sentence frame was i like this model but and so over the course of that night we were able to hear from all of our team members that were present we did it in a randomized kind of fashion by group that's represented on this team and they were able to share everything in terms of what they were feeling in terms of what they liked because or what they liked but subsequently we did have a meeting on february 10th as well at that meeting we were able to share some data they had some homework that they had to do in terms of filling out a form a google form and we presented that data to the group we are very excited and very confident that our march 3rd meeting we can begin the input at the board level and we can begin having discussion here at the board level when you hear the recommendations coming from the school reorganization team um and so we're very excited that we're going to be able to do that on march on march 3rd but that is the update uh up to now do any of the board members have any questions concerns anything that they would like to share ask i'll just just really look forward to to the the update and interfacing with the the team great thank you we'll go ahead and move to 10.1 approval of consent calendar can i please get a motion to approve 10.1 make a motion to approve we have board member 10.1 calendar thank you we have board member rodriguez pena uh first motion we have a second by board member cruz gonzalez let's go ahead do we have any discussion any questions concerns okay we'll move to vote i am not currently online uh so can we please get a vote uh board member rodriguez pena yes yes board member cruz gonzalez board member yes board member career yes and i myself board member arianis say yes it passes 5-0 we move straight to 12.1 2020 college and career readiness levels and graduation rate report we have jen miss gen edict brian give me just a second to move her over i'm getting this spinning wheel again good evening board give me just a moment and i'll start my screen sharing okay well good evening board president ariana's board members mr ortega cabinet i'm excited to be here with you tonight especially following the presentation earlier on from the rop group because the work that they are doing is directly related to what i will be sharing with you this evening and i'm really happy to share our 2020 college and career readiness outcomes and graduation rates these are the rates and and the the data that is often used on our california school dashboard this is california's new accountability system and it measures various aspects of a school's district and use multi uses multiple measures to really show the progress and of school districts and schools and each december the california dashboard is released by the california department of education and normally i bring a full report to you on all of the state and local indicators that are reflected on it but due to the coba 19 pandemic and suspension of some of the metrics such as s back scores and chronic absenteeism following our shutdown last spring a full dashboard with all of the indicators was not released by the california department of ed but there are data that are still available and can be shared with you and with our public and that's really the purpose of what i will be doing this evening so our topic really is to look at our 2020 college and career readiness levels and graduation report um before i dive into the college and career readiness data i'd like to share what what measures are used to determine college and career readiness in uh california there are actually many options for students to demonstrate college and career readiness you can see by this slide what those are students must first graduate from from high school earn a diploma and then they can use any of the measures here as evidence that they are college and career ready the measures include completing a career technical education pathway completing rigorous courses including a through g or dual enrollment with a community college program passing challenging exams such as the spac ap tests ib tests they can receive the state seal of by literacy and also participate in courses that develop leadership so for example a student at azusa high school could complete our engineering pathway and use that in conjunction with their academic achievement uh on sbac to show that they are college and career ready and to kind of be counted as prepared so that gives you a little bit of background and explanation about how the state and how we look at college and career readiness and so i want to dive into some of the data with you right now so this slide gives you an overall preparedness level for our entire district um you can see in the upper left section uh gives us the the prepared approaching and not prepared uh levels for 2020 students who are prepared met all of the requirements students who are approaching readiness met some of the requirements but not all of them and then students who are considered not prepared did not meet any of the requirements in addition to earning their high school diploma and then if you look over in the upper right corner you can see that despite the onset of the pandemic last spring our class of 2020 showed great improvements in being college and career ready when compared to 2019 our district preparedness increased seven percent and we reduced the number of not prepared students by 10 percent the circle graphs at the bottom of this page reflect the breakdown for the class of 2020 by school and i'd like to take a moment to address some of the differences you might see between some of the school sites first you'll recall that students who attend sierra high school are most often there due to a lack of progress in meeting their high school graduation requirements they're there to to catch up on their credits and those that stay and graduate from sierra high school have caught up on their credits but they haven't always had the space in their schedules to take additional coursework or be part of specialized programs so even even so please note that you know we had 10 percent of graduates either approach or be prepared we had two percent that did meet all requirements to be prepared college and career prepared and that's because sierra high school is one of very few alternative high schools in california that offer programs such as ap courses college credit courses and then as you heard earlier now looking at some career tech pathways i'd like to take some time to show you some of the disaggregated data for our district and so the following two slides will provide an analysis of the data on college and career readiness by different school groups every student groups excuse me so the first uh of these two slides shows uh preparedness levels based on language ability income and foster youth status these bar graphs also show you change from 2019 to 2020.

some of them have said hold on uh but most of them that are willing to sign this year are taking part or taking students right yes grape yes brown yes yes director diversity is here to give us an update good evening all right i'll talk louder so i'm going to talk to you guys on a few different facets and we'll slowly build uh this has been probably the craziest 30 days that we've had with trying to go from zero to a thousand not even a hundred with getting everything up and running um and trying to get all the facilities and everything scheduled and everybody going but first off all the activities that we have offered at middle school and high school are up and running they're all virtual and i've been popping into some of those and i do see numbers increasing primarily probably because there's not a whole lot of overlap we're not trying to steal the same kids at the same times so our sponsors are staggering a lot of their meeting times and we're seeing a lot of a good participation there so hopefully we can continue to keep building when we get back in person and you know they can keep working collaboratively so our kids don't have to make choices as far as middle school sports as soon as we were able to go live in person girls volleyball shifted from virtual to in person so that's been going very well i know they had a seventh eighth grade practice scrimmage amongst themselves because the ncjc decided not to have any volleyball games so just to try to give those girls you know something you know they arranged that boys basketball and cheerleading has started no competitions for them at the middle school level and that was a conference decision but what their ncjc decided girls basketball will have some games very limited so director polloway and myself are going to work with the middle school ads we wanted to kind of get through the last week and a half of what it's like to actually host a game with spectators and parameters and we're gonna go down to cms and pk and see can we offer that you know same option opportunities that we're doing at the high school for for parents to come in and see see the kids play and then we'll we'll get that communicated out as girls basketball approaches um as far as you know middle school football and track they have not yet determined ncjc wise what that's going to look like um i think it's it's a big crap shoot at this point because i know high school wise our first football game is march 19th we have you know we can't even see the fence right now behind all the snow so we're not sure what that's going to look like so we have a little bit of time there but i know middle school sport wise uh that's kind of where they're at uh once volleyball went in person we we dr mogan and dr stern and myself we talked we only had one or two girls signed up when it was virtual but as soon as we went person boom they all came back do we are we bound by the ncjc decision to not participate can we work with saint charles and play redling and can we i mean like is there any benefit to just getting these kids some competition outside of our conference it's worth looking into but a lot of times the middle school conferences stay locked yeah and a lot of it too is exposure and okay we're going to go here and now we're going to go there so and and their middle school stuff has really been locked over the years but it's definitely worth looking into if they're not to whatever yeah to not have sports might be the exception yeah you know and i don't know what i don't know what that middle school conference looks like you know as far as maybe they have enough games because i know that's what we experienced at the high school once okay here's your conference schedule try to find some non-con games well they're all locked because like the duquesne conference which is the saint charles james they're playing tuesday saturdays and sundays just to get their games in with officials and a lot of other facility constraints they have so there's a lot of uh behind the scenes massaging that has to make it for that so now as far as the high school we kind of touched on that right now we are successfully running girls basketball boys basketball dance and cheer girls basketball is off to a great start for 4-0 you know they beat you know batavia carry grove huntley and sycamore yesterday and sycamore would have been what everybody kind of slated as a regional championship game or a sectional game and we beat them handily which was kind of a nice nice thing to see uh boys basketball is off to a 3-0 start to get beaten kerry grove huntley woodstock they got jacobs tonight so as soon as i'm done i'm heading back to the high school dance and cheer are the only two sports that are going to have a state tournament but everything has been virtual so it's kind of interesting because they'll compete in in two count two invites in the same day because you're sending in the video so but dance is taken first third and third which their third place is behind perennial state champ manuka and julia catholic so it's hey when we get down state this could be the year that they get a trophy you know which is kind of nice and cheer is just starting their competitions this week cheer was a little bit slower to kind of hit the ground running with running their their virtual competitions because there's a lot that goes into it so but they're still going to get their six uh six invites in as well but instead of having a state basketball tournament you know the conference we're going to host the fox valley tournament so that's for all the marbles so at least they're going to play for something worthwhile the the one time through the conference will see the tournament and the way it's sitting right now is central is the team to beat which is a good problem to have we are also the smallest school in the conference so which is kind of fun um so now getting into the great things we are hosting these games i've worked with director polloway to figure out our facilities measuring it out putting sit here sit here signs everywhere and we are allowing spectators and as a conference we decided 10-0 in our vote that no no visiting fans because when it comes to enforcing masks and those types of things we have a better relationship with our own parents to have those conversations versus you know those of you that have been to games you can't control somebody you have nothing over besides okay you're not going to agree it's time to leave so we're limiting it to our fans so we can get as many parents in as we can so right now we started with uh two adults per per player and then for our seniors because we have one boys basketball senior and then two girls i'm allowing them for because you know they're seniors this is it for them and uh our goal is to still have our senior day to recognize those families and those players and do those things so we have to keep those uh those numbers down the greatest thing is all of our spectators are sitting in the balcony you know and yes the idph and the ihsa rules that they gave us the original one was 30 feet off the court well we don't have 30 feet if you've been in our gym we're lucky to have two you know from the sideline but we're not the only ones in that problem so then they retracted that and said okay if you don't have a minimum of 12 well then they have to sit opposite of the teams well a lot of our schools in our conference are like okay freshmen you play jv you played now leave well we have the ability to have our our parents upstairs in the balcony and now those jv kids can transition to the other side of the floor and still be a part of that program because we're still trying to develop and i think that's huge so that's that's how we laid out our gym so we you know we can still offer that to all of our kids so the varsity kids that come in early they sit across from their benches they transition out we clean and they were just kind of flopping sides so but you know director polloway's crew at night they've been great you know with the transition of cleaning in between games the bathrooms in between and you know we're only five games in of our 19 home games and you know knock on wood things have been very very smooth um the second awesome piece is working with director tobin and polloway last week monday to wednesday was a whirlwind because i met with matt bill and our our av teacher trying to figure out he streamed a live football game last year saying okay what can we do because if we're not allowing fans we have to offer something to our visiting constituents in our conference because they all had different things and we were going to try to use our cameras and the sling tv and it was very confusing and we need a lot of manpower to get this done and we're really trying to limit students coming in and kids coming in because we're limiting it to adults so there's our manpower okay what do we do so director tobin started looking into the huddle cameras and he called me and says hey have you ever thought of this and financially it all worked out you know and we got the cameras and they were put up within two and a half days for our first game against kerry grove and they've been working great and matt mccarthy are one of our techs he's been working with me on the side because i always seem to click the wrong button and get the wrong camera for the wrong game but he's got a down path so we we've been running this you know uh effortlessly and it's been great like i was sitting in the back of the room our jv boys are playing right now they went in overtime and lost by three so it's it's kind of awesome i get to watch the girls at the same time i'm home for the boys so it's you know without without our collaborative team that wouldn't happen and i know we've been getting i don't think we've broken a thousand but i think opening night we had 916 views for the varsity boys and it's growing um and with that i was talking to matt and you know we're trying to figure out if we can't get enough spectators and what can we do with the middle schools i know we can't do the huddle cameras but they're playing around with some different type of i'll just call them gopros because i don't know much about them but what can we do at those levels to try to offer something for for our parents there but i can tell you that you know we've been having streaming issues at other schools we go to so this has been kind of nice like hey we're you know paving the way for a lot of awesome things and just the the thought process of hey what can we do next that's going to continue to make this better so you know i'm the feel good story i wanted to come and kind of hey this is what's going on and a lot of great things and if you guys have questions for me yes i would like to say that i i think you're you're very humble steve standing up there because i know the the work dr mangan knows the work that you've been putting in um to the athletics to your regular meetings with a ihsa to meeting with other other school districts to working with director tobin director polloway um your your leadership is is very appreciated as well as the other members of the team that you collaborated with so in closing we will have the rest of the high school sports season so boys soccer football and volleyball is supposed to start next i'm very confident volleyball will go without any hitches outside sports i'm not 100 sure what that looks like right now especially we're getting what three more inches maybe by the end of the week um but the exciting part is our spring season we totally lost last year right now the ihsa is planning on state tournaments for all of them for baseball softball girls soccer and boys and girls track and wrestling is going to happen in what i'm considering spring two their summer season they won't have they won't have a state tournament but they will have a season so which which is nice because our huddle camera now our main gym is the main focus for all of these competitions there's other there's other aspects of our huddle cameras that you know we can record practices and those types of things for teaching elements um i was talking with matt we're going to try to see if we can figure out smaller groups or maybe try to incorporate some fine arts in there you know play a live performance i want to get in there and test it and see what the acoustics are first i know we can hear mark einwick on there loud and clear but i don't know what it sounds like when you start putting 10 instruments in there is there too much bounce because there's there's no bodies to absorb the feedback so we're going to play around with that and see you know if we can start using this or maybe the field house camera would be better you know so this is opening up a lot of avenues that we didn't have i would say two weeks ago so it's kind of exciting to see what we can do with this from here on out so hey steve what is a huddle camera so basically huddle is the platform where all of our coaches use for scouting trading films teaching you know when they're going over game film and that well so they have these basically it's a it's a box there's three lenses in there one stationary on the scoreboard and the rest move with the movement and so i just call it the huddle camera it's just a regular camera but it's sent to us by huddle okay so it's just the platform that it's under so on that where's that access is that on youtube so yeah so everything's on our athletic 8-18 site but it's uh youtube live so it's dot chs.streaming space one and then chs dot streaming space two is the field house and i mean the pictures are awesome like heard some good feedback on it yeah you know a couple of girls uh basketball player parents have been able to see games because of that games essentially yeah and i it's it's not it's not the same because i know you know one of our senior parents mom she texted me she's like grandpa's got to come because i you know you can't get somebody to watch my little guy but i'll watch it live stream you know so it's not the greatest thing but you're not going to miss it and i know as a parent with kids in sports we can't always be there and now this is an avenue to not miss it because something else is inhibiting that so no it's definitely a great thing to be able to use and probably use in the future as well yeah and i know we're exploring i know they asked us to be a beta site for the football stadium and due to the weather we're going to move soccer into the football stadium this year because you know director polloway doesn't have the manpower to be snowblowing and shoveling two facilities to use for games so we're gonna focus on one and you know and then this way if we get the huddle camera there let's test it out and see because maybe this is the way we go and we start looking at other facilities you know because i can tell you you know with a lot of our parents they work and those 4 30 games are tough but now if we get stream alive like i said it's not the same but well that's where i was going with it yeah definitely i mean yeah you know it's a challenge to be able to get out there but it's something to be able to add value right and the nice thing is just like the board meetings you know because it's the youtube live they're there they don't disappear so if you miss it live you can still go home and watch it at night you know so all of our you know like i call you know i'm an armchair quarterback dad too you know i could sit down with my kid and actually watch the game now and have conversations so there really loves that oh well we can review the tapes from tonight's episode exactly tomorrow as well but you know there's a lot of benefits that you know we didn't have which which i think is good and it just shows the innovation of our district and not willing to just settle we'll you know keep turning over stones until we find out what works so you know it's really an exciting thing to be a part of it's the work that we've done in the past from you know the fiber loop connecting all our facilities yeah because without the fiber i don't think we could do that we would not have had the broadband to do that so right no it's good i'm glad other sports will get to live the pain of snog fields not just stuff on baseball yeah because we've been there well when i talked to our baseball softball coaches and i said you know hey this year we might have to do our game changer live you know because and that's the other piece we don't we don't even know what our outside mitigations are going to be yet because they haven't told us you know so if it's 50 in the stadium well i don't know if we have any spectators out there you know how does that look for baseball softball so we're still in the planning stages we have our schedules but we don't know what it looks like from a spectator side so we're still all thinking outside the box of what can we do to provide for our parents because the kids pieces is taken care of they can play we got coaches we have games they're set it's it's the other aspect now that we have to focus on so hopefully we get something soon you know i know we have another ihsa meeting this week so that's one of the bigger questions is when is spring mitigation is going to come out for us so we can start planning because i know i got to work with director polloway because if we can have fans i don't even think we could see a seat in the bleachers right now [Laughter] let alone get into the stadium so those are other hurdles we'll have to take on so any other questions well thank you i'm gonna run back to the high school now good luck all right next is the adoption of ap stats the practice of statistics so we had a request from the math department at the high school uh to uh adopt a new textbook for the ap stats uh our teacher and the department chair aj pill did a review this year of three different textbooks which are in the memo that i provided for you of the three textbooks they have selected the book that i'm passing around the practice of statistics ratchet out for it there were some changes from the college board that required them to readjust some things and add some things into their curriculum by the college board if you recall college board or ap courses are really designated as what they require us to instruct so they give us the curriculum and the syllabus in which we must follow to teach the college uh course because it goes as college credit if they get a three four or five uh so the ap college board dictates that the cost that i'm uh of the textbook will be ten to almost eleven thousand dollars we're looking for uh 30 textbooks for the classroom class set which is very usually purchased for the purpose of our teachers to have a class set and then as well as 60 digital license because we have 60 students for next year and then that would continue we would up them if we need to if we have additional students in there um on annual basis but the licensing is for a six-year license we got better pricing for an extended license so we'll be extending that for a six-year license and rachel madrid was the classroom teacher still is the classroom teacher for ap stats that work directly with uh aj peel any questions regarding how many students would you say we have 60 students that take the ap stats for next year isn't this the class that we brought back after a student we did that one has been struggling uh tia sportsman used to teach it for us and so she it had started out very low she had been able to get quite a few students to come to it she left us uh to go to another district and when she left she kind of took a little dip again and now it's coming back up so while we're back up to 60 for next year which we're excited about music tia palmeter sorry she got married any questions all right thanks astrid um next is a in-person remote learning status report i'll begin um so every every district employee across all category of physicians who desired to receive the vaccine was able to receive the vaccine last week they had clinics that ran on tuesday wednesday and thursday we're able to accommodate everyone outside of work hours so that we can maximize student learning the second dose of the vaccine will be available for any any of our employee groups uh starting then on march 9th 10th and 11th and it will work the same way this this previous clinic worked so in future meeting with the health department they'll be sharing links with me and then once those links become available uh they'll go to our staff to be able to sign up for their second dose of the of the vaccine so that's good news that that's rolling out in fact um the vast majority of of educators and employees of school districts across king county were able to receive the vaccine do we have any certainly respecting that we can't ask people if they got it but any kind of unofficial data that we have for the number of our teachers and direct you know direct care we had like 368 people that responded yes they wanted to receive the vaccine another 114 people who were undecided and in our conversations with the health department we made sure that there was more than enough vaccine available for not only everyone who said yes but everyone was undecided and that's some additional for people who are maybe no but then switched over so that's good news the cdc recently came out with some some new operational strategies for k-12 schools through phase mitigation really as you as you start to look at it and dig into it they're saying that you could transmission rate at elementary is lower than the transmission rate in middle school in high school so that you could bring back theoretically bring back more students at the elementary level in pods or classrooms where they kind of move together and they're contained but they're still looking at hybrid models right now for middle school and high school now you have to remember that things change rapidly so if you had asked me on the beginning of january if i thought we'd be having athletics right now i think i would say no i didn't i wouldn't say that based on the numbers but now we have athletics opening up in my conversations with the local health department um not only myself but other superintendents ask about will you start to limit for king county in our region the the social distancing requirement of six feet and then we would like to say what about three feet you know can you can you eliminate down to that and right now they're saying um still no uh they're sticking with the six feet but when you look at the guidelines it's it's six feet whenever to the fullest then possible whenever possible so you have to look at all those factors as you play into it so things are still changing um we're committed to our current model for the remainder of the school year dr mogan will talk a little bit about starting some committee work and some other issues because of because of this and because there's not a vaccine available for students right now we're going to take some additional steps so dr mongan yeah so what we're going to try to do is push out a survey at the end of this week to community members or parents to ask them if they would still be willing to do remote next year if the state board requires it we do believe that because of the vaccine situation that we're able to get teachers uh with vaccines but they don't really have any time frame for students to be vaccinated that we still have parents out there that may be uncomfortable having their students attend school with that being said we do we're kind of guessing that the state board of education is going to say you have to offer remote learning just like we had to offer and what learning this year wasn't really a choice by district that was dictated by the illinois state board of education if that's the case we really want to get early numbers to see what those numbers are so we can plan for staffing patterns by grade level what are we looking at how do we schedule for those types of elements especially as we begin to look at our committee work that we need to do and how is that going to lay out will it look different for elementary than it might for middle school and high school although we have half days currently and it is a different schedule for elementary i do think there is promise in what the cdc has with the cdc saying that you can keep them in pods uh so and we know that elementary is pretty much a pod system where they stay in their classroom they go to their specials or their electives we're going to call those as pods first grade classroom goals as a first grade classroom that that may give us promise to get our k-5 students back full-time um completely and even though we're underneath those guidelines cdc is giving us some a little bit of leeway i think when you can keep them in a pod situation if you recall this year we did keep prairie knowles middle school and somewhat of a pod teacher shifted uh central middle school mid-june fairly early on about month end they weren't really liking that very much so we flipped it back to where students do still move at the eighth grade center those are discussions that we can have as well depending what we think is best for kids and for the staff i just think middle school and high school probably is a little bit closer to a hybrid model again next year versus what we might be able to do for elementary given what we're currently seeing from cdc which we believe idph will take some form of that i also think if we can get the information back from our parents through the survey it'll tell us where we're at this year we're about a 70 30 split about 70 percent of our our parents are choosing to bring students in house throughout the course of the week um and 30 are choosing to keep them at home so if it's the same split then we'll have to look at how that staffing pattern will lay out for us or hopefully maybe some parents are willing to have some of those students return next year um as i've got kind of rolling into then what does the quarter is one thing i'd like to say and we talked about this in ccc today there were several teachers who rightfully so and i fully support this advocating for what would it look like to have a more dynamic schedule next year right where we decided november i forget don't quote me on that but november that what we did for second semester needed to stay present for second semester and i just wanna you know you guys know and you know everybody who's listening and certainly as we've always said we will do what we can if it's feasible the shift with the dynamic nature of people coming in and out but that that was something that ryan certainly advocated for and i think we will do our best yes to make it as dynamic as is legitimately feasible again flexibility will be important but we have uh it's important that we remember that there's multiple things we have to get in place in order to be flexible absolutely uh so flexibility is one of the things that our teachers did ask for you're accurate especially when it comes to our special populations our language learners and some other students as well as chaining the schedule stream to allow for more students to come in and out so flexibility will be one of those things we look at um i think for the quarter 2df data some of the information here is very interesting what i'm presenting here which you have right beside you as well is side by side data so you're seeing quarter one data next to quarter two data as well as you're going to see some three year trend data because i think the trend data helps us see where we're at in terms of our our student population if you recall um we looked at grade marks per student the three represents an a just so you understand this means that means if we took all of our students that we have in high school and i said well of all the a's given each student would get about three a's because that's the best way i could calculate the the numbers for us and so when you look at this first one you're seeing the blue represents school year 2018-19 red is 1920 and 20 21 is in yellow and you're seeing a quarter one to quarter two comparison i think what's interesting here um you know kind of putting 20 21 aside you can see that consistently our a's went down quarter two so this isn't something that just happened because we are in this hybrid model this is just a historical kind of pattern that we have that where they were sitting in a's in quarter one you saw it dip naturally in quarter two as a matter of fact this year our students aren't dipping as much we're actually seeing more more a's than what we would have seen in 18 19 19 20.
