what was the reason to change it to seniority alphabetical order for a roll call vote so um mr sismar the reason that came forth on 165 was uh in the instant situation that we have uh with a brand new board member who's first on the list and perhaps not having um having the um the experience of being on the board that may desire to have a later vote in the calling order so that's that's pretty much what drove um recommending a modification there and having it in seniority alphabetical order okay i have two comments on that one would be um for lack of a better word i think our board members are independent thinkers and i wouldn't think they would need to follow in seniority uh order to vote and also if we look at robert's rules of order for meetings any member can pass during a roll call vote and they are again asked at the end of that roll call vote for their response if they're not ready to vote when their name is called so not only would junior members be allowed to institute the past any member of the board could institute a pass at any time so i don't i don't see the reasoning to have all senior members vote first and then have junior vote junior members vote later again um can we can we again take these two the by the way my suggestion would be to table these these two blocks and and if um you know dr valesky or uh mr gelato could just said to me what the red lion changes are i can look at it a lot of what happens in the bylaws flow from state statutes so the state statutes in 18a dictate what uh roles are in terms of voting etc but i can take a look at it and i can also address um mr sizzamar's inquiries about uh statements i'm assuming that statements if you're running for a board office internally in the board office and i'll look at that as well um and i can give back a memo on that so that the full board can consider it at your next meeting so i'll just table those two this evening because i don't know what changes were made to those two policies no as much information as you could provide matt and get it to us ahead of time before the meeting that would be great yeah my pleasure mark was this what you were envisioning when you brought this up yes thank you okay terrific all right so then i'm gonna modify the motion bernie we need a motion to amend uh the original motion to remove uh those two bylaws bylaws 152 and 165.

however if we do go in june of 22 with the project that's been approved by referendum vetted by the board of education vetted by the town council supported by the local pac and ptas and everybody else that we would go in with that strong of an application whereas on june 30th of 2022 the project could get put on the list for funding and green light and we'll already have the design done it will be that much further along the process so the actual opening of the school date will not change with this extension if it does go to referendum this year 2020. okay does that make sense that makes perfect sense okay and that's like the clearest explanation that i've heard so that's really helpful but where where's the date by which everything has to be finalized in order to be able to go to referendum well if arnett was here i'd ask her but i'm not i i don't i mean there's some period of time i mean it's like at least two months if not longer right to send something to referendum it's it's got to be like around september 15th or something it's not a full two months it might be oh it isn't okay yeah because we have i know i've been in capital budget meetings it went like as late as like the 7th or 8th of september or something it's you can't you can't go in much later than that but i think that that's irrelevant at least that's what it was you know in fact it was several years ago i'll shoot an email out to uh jen and team tonight asking about that for clarity from internet and so what i was worried about until uh well until last night is um you know we initially were going to get something in early march and pran's point there's still hope we'll get something soon on june 1st i agree with her on that um and then you know we have rest of march april may to do what we need to do and vet this process and now you know it's it sounds like enough time in there um to hit that original june 30th with this plan you know it we're not constrained to get everything done in four weeks if june first was the date we finally got everything and had a button of stuff up so it seems to me like the june the the current plan gives us more flexibility and room to vet this you know even if the the grant application is not ready which i think is a good idea um but i think what we need to get from colliers i know chuck's work warrington's work on this too is uh once smc does its work what does the board have at noon by when right so we gotta bet sometimes because i rather have uh right i think backwards from and make sure we can hit it and i you know i guess what i was trying to sort of think about was are there things that we could start doing now even though we don't even as these words are coming out of my mouth and now i think oh but no there isn't okay you're waiting on us that's all there is to it but if there are two options if we knew never mind okay oh go ahead catherine all i'm trying to say soon are there certain things that we could do that would help us be in a position and what i think tony what you were saying it probably does solve that problem you know let's just figure out you know what it is that we're going to have to do and then to the extent we could get anything ready to go or something you know we'll just be in that much better shape so um but we do we do have catherine we do have ed specks for a sixth has been done already yeah it could be repurposed i'm sure no that's a good point i think there are some things we can do um while we get a final report right so the costs are being hardened as we speak the scenarios are being refined still we know space requirements we're going to get the um when i say we both the smc border there we're going to get the detailed report from slr that andrew and we're talking about we could slowly start chewing that sooner than later because and again i i want to turn it over to the folks but you know if we see that reaching interesting study and you know jeff has a visceral reaction to again just by example some part of it and and we don't if we see an impact on the options as a non-starter that'd be some good information for the committee to have if that happens but i think you know so there's some things we can review um once agency is ready to release those things to us now you know we'll talk with the giant chuck about that but i would say in a couple weeks you know by march 1st we'll get a lot more detail from smc where they are and we could better talk about that in the meantime uh andrew uh jeff and i've been kicking around hey you know what planning start gearing up for so be on the lookout for a meeting on that next week or two but yeah if the board has any ideas by the way on uh some of these things that get started sooner and andrew let them know that let the committee know myself but i'm gonna link go back uh faith you had your hand up a long time ago so faith and then tim i'm sorry faith i'll shut up thanks now i appreciate it and um you know what i do want to say ann and andrew and everybody tony everybody on that committee i i confess i observe those meetings i can't say i follow them because they are they're going to keep my mind young if i try to figure out everything that's going on in them that being said they are changing constantly and and so that is a little alarming and i am glad you're going to for the june 1st and i'm also glad that we're going to get a redistrict redistricting proposal um because i couldn't even begin to figure that out and one based on hard data um i do agree with catherine on we got it the the big question we're gonna get plans one that could fundamentally change the way we educate our kids and that is do we go to the sixth through eighth i don't think we all know we don't have a consensus yet and i want to have data um when we make that decision and i don't it would be most unfortunate that if smc came out with a sixth or eight and the majority of the board said no um what do we do then so i i'm with catherine the faster we can start dealing especially with that particular issue um it could save a lot of heartache um i just so i don't know how we go about doing it where do we find the time in the calendar um i just really kind of can't emphasize enough that that is a question that we as a board that is our responsibility and we have to answer it um and provide guidance to the provide guidance to the smc um so jeff has jeff has given us a lot of information on six through eight middle school yeah correct the last plan and and um we you know it's a i i'm gonna say it's a new board um i would like to see it i yeah my point is i i think it's readily available i i don't think i've been conducting doesn't seem to be a huge problem to me to get that information to you right and what's new is the the other option 1a within the elementary school and you know the other the other buildings and that's going to materialize and so anyway listen if we want to start talking about the sixth grade middle school in more detail we certainly can uh knowing there's more data coming i have no problems with that and you know uh i don't think that board does either in faith uh you know as far as time you know i don't want to belittle you know make this oversimplify this march april and may are kind of they're always always busy as a board but there's there's more in that schedule for us certainly to have dedicated meanings for this so we can certainly do that and i fully understand that i mean we could probably settle this in a single meeting um but to go back to you know the sixth or eighth plan the the data and i read it um it was years ago you know a couple years ago that i read it i understand the data is out there but it was data to support the six through eight i would like to see objective data on maintaining a junior high school of seventh and eighth um and so i can make an educated comparison or educated decision one way or the other uh and i don't i may be the only one i don't know i maybe there are others on the board who want to hear it as well so i just throw it out i i want to just clarify real quick if i could and then this is the long time middle school educator in me that we run a middle school a junior high school is more of a um like it sounds where we have math departments and english departments and kids move we use a middle school uh methodology which is very uh intimate in its its design that we put students together on teams that are roughly 100 students each with an english math science and social studies teacher that that way they are with that cluster of 100 and don't really venture outside of that except for lunch where they would integrate with another team and see their friends that they went to elementary school with it's only same grade level though so seventh graders are having lunch with seventh graders another time they may be cross-teamed is in a world language class so if you're taking latin chances are there are kids in other teams in that latin class or you know their specials like art or pe or something um so it's designed to be very uh it's a it's a small graduation step up from developmentally from an elementary school to a middle school we appreciate it so much that we when i was high school principal and i know mary has looked at this too the idea of the high school equivalent of that sort of teaming is a transition for ninth graders called academies so um and it will just be and i know you didn't mean to make it but i want to be clear that we didn't just go fishing for what data would sell a six through eight middle school and only you know filter it that way or something like that we you know we put out objective data from objective sources and what you'll find is somebody who's looked at this a lot over the course of a long time go dating back to when i was on the new england league of middle schools board of directors the you know there's not wild advantages either way there's not wild disadvantages not wild you know you're talking within this swath not that swath and um you know our teachers because of the way curriculum is written often encompassing six through eight together and i think their their response was when we met with them and and did the school modernization visits that they felt that six through eight middle schools were developmentally advantageous for sixth graders and that's what our sixth grade teacher said so you know i don't know if you would consider that objective or subjective data it's not research but it's um objective opinions of um professionals in our community so i but certainly i will gather information and share it with the board um either some of the stuff older stuff and i'll look for newer stuff too thank you sure thanks faith uh tim and then adam thanks tony yeah uh faith thanks for that and jeff thank you too i'd like to see that information as well i i'm open like tony said i mean i'm open to any of the options brought forward by the smc but speaking as a parent i i want my kids to be together as long as they can in in elementary school um so i i i mean i'd prefer uh looking at the elementary schools rather than building a new sixth to rate school um going back i can't walk away from this new thousand student number that we just got and so i just um in response to the comment you had made before ann about the cost reductions i totally appreciate that i think that's important you know but at the same time so that what just popped into my head was a new chapman and then i mentioned it before you do an elementary school over at uh say to risco farms not a risk of farms but that property at the corner of jarvis and marion i think um which is owned by the town i say this for the public who's watching um so we wouldn't really have to worry about obtaining the property or anything like that but you know off the top of my head darcy could be closed it could be moved down to there it could be redistributed in other places i mean you can still close the school hummus then you know you could do something with the administrative offices i'm not sure that the idea that popped in my head because of this new thousand student number that we got last night that the town got last night i don't think that yeah my idea is um should be precluded because we don't get the cost reductions and i don't want to like change off in some new course but frankly we just got really really different data that's the first time i saw it interested it's the first time so um i just i i gotta put that out there because i'm really not that favorable to a six through eight program though i am open to i am happy to look at the the data that you're talking about jeff but i i just feel like that was a it's a bit of a game changer right now in my mind and it's not i don't know where did the thousand number come from how did it pop up to that number do we know because i mean i'll say let me say this i got sold on the projected student enrollment increase okay i've been doing i've been trying to do my research i i accept it um even though i had doubts or questions i should say you know a few months ago but i worked through it it makes sense to me but this thousand there's got to be a basis for it what is it does anybody know right now andrew we're going to chime in on that yeah i just wanted like i think you let's just wait for the report to come out in two weeks okay i'm not i'm not trying to minimize what you're saying no no no no no it's a range and there's you know there's a lot of reconfigurations that are going on and looking at all the different options in the numbers okay okay the someone on the smc it might have been chuck north a couple weeks ago asked you know why not do a bigger somewhat i don't want to put it someone asked why not do a bigger new elementary school i think at least have some room for for growth i don't think that's what drove it um i that is a different number and i we saw jeff's response earlier you know about the ideal on three school sizes right you know that would be a very large school i think the initial you know with these schools comparable in size to highland um but again i reserve judgement those we do want to see that data come back and see if that changes anything so so i'll say tim you know hang on we'll get the answers in two weeks and you'll have exact enrollment numbers per school building tim even better okay thank you uh adam thank you um so you know to go on that 900 school thing i want to when chuck was talking about that i could have sworn he was trying to say that he was he wanted to go to three elementary schools which which is what inflated the number that so he was thinking you were building it behind behind norton you're destroying norton i'm sorry um raising norton and also raising chapman thereby going to three elementary schools and i think i don't know anyway we'll wait for that report that's great um but there's there seems to be two separate problems that we need to consider um and that's do we want to go to a 608 middle school or are we solving for an elementary school population bump because one option seems to solve a school population bump and the other option a new middle school is building a new middle school for another 40 million dollars so i think that's maybe two distinct problems because if when this smc started we weren't anticipating a massive elementary school population bump we were debating sixth grade middle school or new high school and that's what we were thinking about not a new elementary school that came about through the process of discovery and so it you know it it could be i mean there's a big difference in the in the price tag here and if if it's a matter of what's best for for the schools is is it just solving elementary school problem or is it or is it uh going to the sixth through eight model because there's there's it's a it technically solves the population bump but one also transforms the the uh the uh educational culture of of our school system and so it's quite a it's quite a big difference between the two plans when you think about it that way and so what what are we really trying to solve and and maybe that's where the smc is getting a little confused themselves is uh they're they're they're trying to solve the problem with coming at it from two different directions and one is a lot more expensive than the other and so it's a matter of what are you committing to so i i just wanted to say that thank you yeah from a cost perspective that's one dimension right it's an important dimension right because that's a huge factor on the entire town right so remember as a board of education and i i'm preaching to the choir here i know but so we have to weigh a lot of things right the there's the the value of these proposals both from you know a cost perspective and i know i i know just knowing the folks in the board of ed that you know you know we so must believe that you know it comes to finances it's not our responsibility it's really that the town's responsibility and and yes that then they arrest the town to figure out what what can be borrowed and paid for and all that but obviously we want to make sure we're getting the best bang for the buck right so we're gonna look at cost it's not the only dimension though right we and um the educational programming right because it's moderation of buildings which leads to you know uh lack of a bad analogy modernization of our programming so there's educational value of these options and there's a short and long term things are tackling and i think adam you're right and initially you know i mean we knew enrollment was gonna climb we knew that back in 2016 but not the extent that we saw it now so that's new so remember these plans are both trying to solve for the short term and the whole long-term perspective right it's it's not all going to happen in one year right so i think what am is saying is you know um trying to solve your own from two different approaches i think that's one thing but also trying to get the most bang for the buck the most um students uh impacted in a positive way by the first option so there's a lot of things we got to talk through i don't know how um we help smc narrow that down until this data comes back and actual class sizes i think that's going to be a good starter for us but i don't know any other members want to talk about that i mean there's there's there's more to it than gross cost um for us but that's certainly i just wanna if i could point out i've received some communication from um jen bates from the chair of smc specifically to um tim's question there's if we stay with the pre-k through six model for the schools there's a total of two thousand seven hundred and eleven students eight hundred and fourteen at highland five hundred and forty-one at doolittle and 526 at norton i'm sorry 426 at norton if we close chapman school that difference between the projected total max enrollment and chapman is 930 students so there's your thousand student in elementary school that's staying with the seventh and eighth middle school and also that we would have to have something for referendum by the end of august catherine oh thank you thank you thank you jen um am i up next or did i jump the line okay so to me i i can't even fathom a thousand student elementary school it's like in my view that's that's an off the table don't even bother to bring it but um that's just me you know and i but i think if if there is a consensus among the board and i realize that we're you know we're i'm making the statement maybe without all of the data that i need but i'm pretty sure that that's just too big of an elementary school and um so i i don't know what to do with that you know i think we do need to give feedback to the smc to the extent that we are having these kinds of uh visceral reactions of some sort you know um that which is why i think maybe we do need to have board discussions um maybe parallel to what you know more active discussions maybe at this point because i don't think it's fair at all for for the smc to do like the time i mean the herculean work that they're doing i mean which is by the way you guys phenomenal i you know i just i'm so impressed with the amount of work that's being done um but i don't want a plan to come to us and and we we already have determined that that should never you know that shouldn't be on the table at all so um but of course i'm only one person and i'm just saying that we're not having those kinds of conversations you know and i i feel like we're being a teensy bit too passive in in not maybe you know engaging in this conversation more actively that's all yeah i i yeah well certainly this elementary school number is uh is a big change it was up until this week you know we were you know assuming the new elderly school would be you know reasonable in size and that's changed and i understand the data i'll tell you for me if it does turn out that it is going to be a 930 plus person school i have a big problem with that because i i need to understand what the impact is going to be um to our students and school that size of programming and logistics and the building location and traffic and it's it's a major we never had an elementary school that large uh that full and uh i know parents are gonna have a visceral reaction to that as too right because even in the last plan you know the new sixth grade middle school well there was certainly a lot of people in favor you know a lot of parents came out and are concerned about having a large school like that with sixth graders in their um big population you know i'm sure you have similar concerns with a big elementary school and you know that's someone moved to earlier what the ideal sizes are so you know if that data comes back and it turns out that that is indeed a number and we believe it's a non-starter i think that smc should know and so i think what we should do catherine is uh yeah we've been operating under hey let's wait for the final report and get going although i know we've been i think in lightest information we could certainly talk about it so uh we'll work to get a board meeting uh quarterback meeting of the whole plan very soon at least talk about six through eight and let's talk about the large elementary school concept and you know when jeff is ready and marlene and team if they want to bring some data around that that we can chew on to see what the impact would be that's what they're having discussion i agree with you catherine if we can get them some deals sooner than later it's going to help them immensely so thank you for for raising that any other comment from the board before i go back to the questions uh i do have one comment or a question um did the smc examine so you know let's just talk about costs right six to eight hundred twenty million or if it was more than that i don't know uh with the new chapman so now we're staring down the barrel of 160 million um and it also looked like if you were to build new elementary schools they came in around 40 million per school ish 40 or 50 million per school before um reimbursement so had the option been looked at to build like two or three new smaller schools because you could technically build three smaller schools for less money than one large middle school a large elementary school and solve your problems of population and population size and population growth so i was just wondering if that option had been looked at because we certainly know that there's land in norton and you can now build a new chapman at chapman um and and it sounded like we're gonna have to put an addition on highland anyway uh which is that cost had not been identified yet so i was just wondering if that option had been had been looked at so are you saying adding three small elementary schools to the current elementary schools that are no no you you would raise norton you would raise chapman and build new schools there that were bigger but not huge like this this new proposed north end uh elementary school you know to compensate for the population i just wonder if that had been looked at no i mean that wasn't one of the options right keep them yeah we could i mean you know we'll bring this feedback you know back to this and see tonight um uh this is a good question to ask i mean again just because they didn't look at it doesn't mean you know it shouldn't be looked at but all these things adam even that concept would mean doing multiple things in parallel in the first phase to get things done in time for the enrollment bump that's coming in the next four years right so i raised that one because one thing that we touch upon but didn't really talk about and again i want to prolong this but this is a great discussion to have when you get together is you know what are what are the members thoughts on uh so much happening in phase one in these two scenarios are there concerns there trying to try to make that happen that smc should know about if we're not ready to say that tonight that's fine but we'll certainly talk about that when we get together officially in this uh tim uh yeah i guess what i'm thinking is if we were talking about say to address the immediate problem or you know in the next few years the first problem that arises is the elementary school uh so let's talk about a new chapman as jeff said it's probably you know close to cost parity between doing an entirely new larger school at chapman and just renovating chapman so i'm just thinking do that it's not to ignore anything else i don't want it i don't want to give the impression to anybody that this is the end of it you know there's one there's one cost and that's it but uh to me i'm just thinking all right chapman and then we have this number that you know this new thousand nine hundred thirty whatever the number is um look at it slightly differently but kind of just moving down a path and saying this is we have a pro we have a concern and let's move down this path right here right now i don't know that's that's me i'm not a fan i'm not a fan of a sixth grade middle school and i'm also not a fan of a thousand student elementary school i like neighborhood elementary schools i think that's like part of american society um we where a lot of the kids can walk to school so that's where i am i just i have to say we can't have a seventh and eighth middle school without having these large elementary schools unless we're going to put additions on the elementary schools or build several smaller elementary schools you can't have you can't have both you know and i understand that that's why i just threw out a whole new elementary school yeah i mean you know i mean and so there's a lot i think what we're all hearing here is is why we're asking for more time for the town council right right and and you know listen again i i i think everyone's shared this sentiment um it's an analog to it jeff katherine everybody it's uh my my uh monstrous effort um that started not just five years ago i you know vincent showed i don't know if he showed a picture they showed to me a couple years ago he has three four five other binders in his office of past master plans going back decades that he knows of right and and and i i got to reflect back to the fact that the reason why that last master plan started it was the uh she's when jerry was chair was that board of vet at the time that we took a couple years to negotiate getting funding from the town to start a master plan so you know again for better for worse things don't move quickly in town so this has been a long time in the making and this particular group has built down the last group and coming you inform me so yeah there's a lot of great work and there's still some open questions they're trying to answer uh and now we're trying to to answer so i think time spent on this is prudent we certainly don't want to prolong this you know uh yet another year and and waste another year we can't put a shovel in the ground or do something meaningful with our buildings together for enrollment so you know i i don't have a problem with the june date although i think we can you know get something done sooner uh than that so we're going to keep your discussion uh this is a smc update angela and i'm sure if i cut you off an hour ago probably some more things to talk about but i think between now and march 1st the board of edge should meet we'll talk about what we can talk about six through eight right and uh get some feedback smc and uh you know by then uh by march first i think there'll be some data coming back and we'll meet again and we'll help that group you know if there's some fear i can give them that'll help them we'll get it to them sooner and later so i'll work on that with our board and smc and andrew was there anything else you wanted to talk about regarding the modernization committee i'm good so listen i warned everyone a few months ago that as ssc got closer we'd be doing more of this uh in our board meetings i hope for those that have been watching that you've been patient and uh um can appreciate the magnitude of this effort but uh we're all committed as well as the ssc town council to get through this and do something that's really beautiful for cheshire so stay tuned that being said we're gonna move on um so can i just very quickly say i really appreciate catherine i really appreciate your your comments and your sentiments that that you know as a board you're you want to chip in and and do your part with us as well so i appreciate that so thank you you're welcome my pleasure cathy just get this done already let's go i'm with you uh so so moving on uh we have a counter committee update um and did you want to go through the minutes or marlene uh i know we met last week on the two calendar emotions but before you go that the do you want to give a brief update of what the committee discussed i am prepared to do that um marlene we talked before the meeting would you like to share the actual calendar as i talk through the minutes yeah i see it okay so um so marlene do you have up the because now i i can't see it because i've pulled up the minutes i've got the 2021 2022 great so uh this draft calendar was approved last year by the calendar committee and then brought again to us to vote on this year these calendars i think it's worth noting are um are meant to just put together the start dates the professional development days are in there and um the major holidays and the breaks that we're trying to get and all within keeping that 180 days um period but it doesn't go into any more any real detail into the um half days and and other things that will be worked on as uh the calendar before the school year goes out so this calendar has the first day of school for students to be august 31st 2021 which means convocation is scheduled for august 26th and professional development days will be august 27th and 30th november 2nd and march 18th um cheshire public schools will be closed on the following days labor day september 6 the day after is rosh hashanah on september 7th yom kippur is september 16th columbus day october 11th thanksgiving break is scheduled for nov november 25 26 and then there's the winter recess and new year's day and that would run december 24th through january 1st there's martin luther king jr holiday uh january 17th there's february recess which is february 21 through 22.

um that has been taken down from a full week what just a couple years ago maybe longer than that but um to just the two day break and then we have the april break 11 april 11 through 14 and we have good friday on april 15th and memorial day on may 30th so with no snow days the last day of school for students would be june 9th 2022 and the last day for teachers would be june 10th um and then this we had actually robust discussion around snow days and whether the state would be allowing us to take remote days for snow days again but that of course is not decided um and so in this calendar we will take snow days through the end of june and additional snow days needed beyond those 15 days would be move into the april april break and move backwards so any questions on this or i'll make the motion and then we can have discussion uh yeah that's approaching so i would move that the calendar committee ex wait i would move that the board of education accept the 2021-2022 school calendar um as presented all right catherine seconds a discussion not all at once i guess we tear it out from the last discussion it looks great it's just the calendar so but i do have a question because what you suggested was that like early dismissal days and um this doesn't contemplate all possible early dismissal days or it does or did i misunderstand that well we have the opportunity a couple in there we have the opportunity to share because of covid and the executive orders another guidance from the state they were able to use uh days like tomorrow right as a remote learning day uh if it's a snow day right we don't know and marlene please correct from wrong we don't know yet if we're gonna have the same guidance for next year that no i think i didn't articulate my question well i'm talking about like the yeah dismissal for yeah professional development early release release collaboration time if you recall uh board members that we negotiated in the contract certain number of uh early release days for teachers for collaboration next year et cetera um the days that we put in for coven i'm going to touch upon that a bit later those none of those days are entered into this calendar at this time typically what we do is we approve the school calendar and then we go back marlene and i as we get toward the end of the year we'll outline all those early release days uh making sure we work it around events in the school year and then we you know send it to parents after that thank you sorry katherine my filter's clocked no that's not yours thank you i've no i have no further questions uh tim thanks tony uh jeff what what's the feedback you've we've had a couple two remote snow days now yes what's the feedback that you've gotten from people on it so far well tomorrow will be the third remote snow day um i i think that first of all as marlene said the most important thing is that we have student participation and that has been very good um you know whether it's a novelty of it or what but um i think a lot of it is our our kids are excited about they all join each other no mask on the computer and just seeing each other means a lot to kids today and it's sad that i have to say that but we've had great participation and the days have worked well to the point where i would love to see the state adopt this option moving forward but you know to be determined i guess so that okay so that's good and it has there been any like positive like a trend of or significant feedback from teachers principals parents about it i mean the teachers as marlene said earlier really appreciated the high level of engagement that our students demonstrated being on it and so you know if our students are happy generally our teachers are pretty happy generally our administrators are pretty happy when that that's the case and i think you know it's nice to maintain some continuity of education you think about the disruptions our students have already had to face and the challenges um if we had to stop everything for all these days the like the three days we would have already had to stop for after tomorrow it's just another disruption so this maintains some continuity especially coming off a week where we had monday and tuesday off so we see a lot of benefits to this and that's why i said i you know i have asked um what representatives from our area to try and you know continue to move this forward if possible monday tuesday and an early dismissal on thursday right and snow day so marlene sorry sorry that i missed that um okay and that has to do what you're talking about with kids being able to see each other is k through eight any feedback on the high school does it make a difference i mean it's kind of i'm thinking it's i don't have any high school kids but it's probably kind of baked into it yeah they they have a wednesday full remote day now anyway yeah and again i think you know our other people across the district we're seeing the value that our high school people see on that wednesday where all of our kids get to see each other with no masks on for the day where you can see a lot more expression is is you know we've kind of adjusted to this but seeing each other in person and face to face and those you're not going to replace that but this is better than seeing half of the room in a mask and other people at home and so you know that they they like you said it's kind of baked into the sauce there but um it's beneficial there too i'd rather have that than having a 17 year old on the road at dismissal today the way we did and you know nobody can nail it 100 of the time but i didn't feel good about dismissing into the heavy snow with a 17 year old on the road yeah i understood thank you anyone else catherine do you want me to slow down is what you're trying to say i'm sorry you want and to slow down this is still uh calendar committee seeing as there's no uh and scenes there's no other uh ebac i'll reread a motion which is part of me here move that the cheshire board education adopts the 2021 2022 school calendar as presented uh all those in favor raise your supporters in hand it is unanimous the motion passes in what do you have well then we uh talked about um re reviewed and approved the proposed draft for 2022 2023 school calendar and uh this one of course goes out another year beyond and we will revisit it again next year and bring that one to the board for the the next year but anyways that one is set based on the calendar of what comes up and um it was presented to the calendar committee with the first day of school on september 1st and the last day on june 12th but after much discussion the committee chose to move the first day of school to august 30th making the last day of school june 9th making convocation scheduled um for august 25th and professional development days on august 26 and 29 november 8th and march 17th part of the reason for that was in the 2021-22 calendar rosh hashanah is the day after labor day and so those that monday and tuesday are off for those holidays but in the 2022 2023 calendar rosh hashanah is much later in september so that gives us labor day on september 5th rosh hashanah on september 26th yom kippur october 5th columbus day october 10th thanksgiving break again november 24th through 25 winter recess including christmas and new year's day would be december 21st 4th through december 31st and martin luther king jr holiday on january 6 february recess february 20-21 good friday april 7th and april break april 17-21 and memorial day would be may 29th in this year so with no snow days the last day of school for students is scheduled for june for 2022 2023 is scheduled for june of 20 20 23 and the last day for teachers is june 10 and snow days will be made up june 13th through the 30th and additional snow days beyond these 15 days we'll begin with april 15 of the april break and move backwards so this one as i said before um comes back to the calendar the calendar committee next year before it comes to the board to be approved but i have a motion for this one that the um that the board accept this proposed um calendar for the 2022-2012 school calendar and um as presented catherine psychos tim you have a look on your face yes yeah i might have gotten i might have gotten lost on the september stuff what um wait a second what is september 2nd what do you mean what is it well it's highlighted in orange oh see i'm not looking at the calendar right now jeff marlene do you know it is it is a day off from school so that students are going to school three days that week and maintaining the long weekend because there is no jewish holiday attached to that labor day for the long weekend as there has been this past year and will be next year oh so you just you just want to offer a four day a long four day weekend to kick off the school year well offer a shortened first two weeks of school to ease into it okay got it got it okay i'm just i'm just thinking whenever you publish this it might be worthwhile to just note that in the list just like day off yeah it's there's no you want to just it's confusing to me because i'm like is that an error toward the bottom of the calendar usually a legend that talks about the color coding i don't know if it's on this one there you go sure but i think all the other dates have an explanation as my point and that one i'm just thinking that's the one that doesn't that's all good point it doesn't yeah it needs to be added marlene's gonna get on it right i'm fine with it oh thanks just fewer phone calls to the central office or the principal or us right uh any other comments or questions on this seen as there are none the motion is moved to cheshire board education adopts the 2022-2023 proposed draft school calendar as presented all those in favor please raise your hand it is unanimous thank you team moving expeditiously forward we are uh understanding committees there are none uh move on section four we have approval or minutes in your board of the packets we have meeting minutes from both the january 21st 2021 and february 4th 2021.

item on old business can i please have a motion for quoted contract award student transportation services heather second by jeff is there any discussion not my second i'm sorry i didn't i didn't second it i don't know okay thanks jeff um mark two were you raising your hand you had discussion yes second i was second okay we have second do we have discussion we have second seconds do we have a discussion all those in favor aye all right opposed abstain motion carries uh committee reports information items the good of the cause first we are going to lead off uh with tony our student rep how are you very good to see you nice to see you too how's everything going i'm doing well i hope all is doing well with the entire board as well um the first thing i wanted to touch upon in my report was the uh motion that you guys just approved uh to change to block scheduling and i appreciate and i speak on behalf of the student body when i say that i appreciate entertaining and being willing to make such uh a drastic change to the scheduling that we consider normal just for the possibility of it enhancing the student experience and the learning experience and the development of skills that are helpful not just in high school but will be helpful uh in higher education such as time management and um you know not dealing with every class on every day um i have friends in other towns who know nothing but block scheduling so i know that if their students are capable of it then the east forensic students should be just as capable and i have no doubt that it will be a success so thank you once again for being willing to take such a lead in other news a survey was sent out to the seniors today in regards to prom and this is a very exciting topic because it's a return to normalcy or some sense of normalcy and it gets the seniors excited for you know the potential possibility of an event where everyone can kind of come together and the survey just shows and highlights how important the student opinion is so that way uh an estimate can be made based on how many people will arrive and whether it's possible to have an indoor prom or whether it's only outdoor given the physical restrictions and constraints uh mandated by the state but a lot of that is still in development but even just it got a lot of students extremely excited today when that survey was sent out so i wanted to touch upon it and another thing is the uh what dr figueroa brought up earlier today about athletics i wanted to mention how some student athletes are very excited to be able to play the sports that they want to play and also something that's a little different is that they can have their parents in the stands so in some cases so this is nice for parents to have the opportunity to watch their students or watch their children play and you know it's it's nice to see that it's still continuing despite the pandemic um and another thing that's new is that there are some of the games are being live streams so that way parents who might be away from school or might be working late or completely away from east brunswick they can be able to tune into the games and sort of similar to block scheduling how this is something that was implemented in quarantine but has a lot of benefits that are unforeseen and it was a nice kind of trial run and we can trust it to be used moving forward uh that will most likely probably be a staple of future athletic events so yeah just ties into the idea of something and not everything that has come about during quarantine is bad and you know we can stick with it in the future and that uh concludes my report for tonight i'm so glad um we're able to put a smile on on everybody's face about possibilities about prom did you read the part of that that uh memo about the fact that board members would get to go to the prom this year i didn't read that specifically but that sounds extreme oh yeah we'd have to wear what we wore to our senior proms so um really i'm noticing oh dr dr no i'm sorry that didn't involve you just the nine of us oh goodness gracious don't worry only kidding tony um and also um thank you for bringing up the fact that uh parents are able to watch uh something so simple uh as a sport parent for so many years something i just took for granted and it's um it's really a wonderful thing to be able to watch your child play um in something that they're passionate about so the fact that we can do this again in some way shape or form is great um and i want i would like ludo way in here too because i i think we need to clarify something uh just to emphasize what tony just reported we are allowing two family members at home events but that that is the limit because we have to maintain uh social justice we still have capacity things we have to worry about capacity issues but thank you to all the parents who have come because you have demonstrated once again for east brunswick public schools that we are able to implement this very quickly and safely and effectively and if it wasn't for the parents being so cooperative this would not be possible so kudos to all of them and i have to give a shout out to john mcminiman who who is you know he's he's listening tonight uh but his video skill set and and the way he conducted the live streams of the games just phenomenal and his picture within a picture and holding the scoreboard so you can watch the score and you can watch the athletes it's just i mean like john just thinks of everything i'm just really proud of the team that we have and and the quality of the program and providing that service to students and parents both but as tony said that live stream event i think is is something that we can we can keep for the future if you can't make it to the game you can log into your computer and you can watch that competition from your your room while you're studying or you could if you're away you know so you can support your your classmates and your your um you know east brunswick students from afar tony have we had a virtual beard done um i don't believe so i think they are trying to however i to be honest president becker i don't want to misspeak and say that uh there has been i was just curious you still reeling from the fact that board members are going to show up at the prom and what we wore to our senior proms victor president becker may i just add uh thank you again no you can't come to the problem you mentioned that uh john mcmenamin i also want to thank john and uh also want to uh mention uh a special thanks to dr vanilla and his team for getting uh you know the protocols in place and working with us to get those protocols in place to make sure that parents could almost immediately start coming to games um i could tell you that just from the parents at the boys senior night the other night there was so many thanks and kudos to the team and to the board for allowing it to happen so quickly a week earlier there was no chance for parents to be there and then uh you know that quickly we were able to turn that around so just uh thanks to the uh dr vanilla and the administration at the high school for his team for that yeah just one last thing that the governor announced at his um this press conference on friday and we we invited our first parents on that's great it's wonderful for the parents great for the kids but just nothing like watching your kid tomorrow jeff jackson i went to uh i was out can you hear me are you freaking out was that my daughter's game live and i'm taking a second i was at my daughter's game live it was awesome uh everybody uh so organized walked in they kept me outside for 15 minutes so they could uh sterilize the space which i thought was fantastic i took my temperature when i walked in the door told me i had to sit on an x and i didn't move and and it was great because the cops told me i don't have to sit on an exit i did it but uh no it was uh it was really great and it was so well organized i appreciate how fast you got it done and it was really cool to see my kid play live again so thanks thanks to everybody involved good stuff susanna now i just want to add to all the comments about you know just hearing um you know just such a wide range of areas in which the pandemic has has affected um you know our operations ranging from you know we heard from the auditors who were so impressed of you know finding a clean audit when you know we had to change all the the way we do business right um just just overnight change the way we do business and yet come out of that with a clean audit and and just how outstanding that was to hearing you know what we're doing on the basketball field and we've been talking a lot about you know what we've been doing in the classroom you know and even to this board right um i had been a fan of going paperless for a long time and guess what we're paperless now a choice of our own survived and we've saved a lot of trees um so you know there's you know i think the we are just so resilient and it's just so great to hear that and and from tony's report you know how the students are just you know finding just new ways to appreciate the little things like okay you know let's let's you know let's figure out you know how we're going to deal with promise there or graduation it's just uh wonderful so just great thanks across the board to everybody thank you tony thanks again um any committee reports information items for the good of the cause for the board i don't think it needs to be said but i'm going to say it anyways i almost wanted to make a motion because you always hear you know people saying there should be a vote of no confidence for this or criticism about that um i kind of wanted even if it's symbolically to have a vote of confidence from the things i've seen and you know from the comments of mrs chu and everybody else tonight i mean from dr volesky on down that the teachers taking on more than they ever have security showing up on snowy days i mean i don't think people know you know everything that goes on every day and it's no fault you know because the board is very transparent with everything that goes on but um like i said maybe symbolically a vote of confidence that the board has the back of the staff as cops would say we got your six i mean uh exemplary all around you know from the top on down so thank you very much maybe a symbolic vote of confidence thumbs up for voter confidence good idea mark thank you lee woo is that a thumbs up hands up or hand raised hundreds got it okay so last thursday uh i had a police committee meeting so i missed the ebef monthly meeting but uh president levitt he did send me the report so i want to uh tell everyone that during this difficult time ebef still approved uh four grand more than worth more than sixteen thousand five hundred dollars it's a really great addition to our uh school budget at the same time he wants to let everyone know that this year again there will be no uh pie dinner his partner in excellence dinner but ebef will publish a celebration of excellence at journal so hopefully you know through this publication ebef can risk some fund so the ebf can support our teacher more in this during this difficult time so if anyone in public is willing and is able to help ebf please come out either contact jeff jack levitt directly so any penny accounts thank you okay susanna um just wanted to report the policy committee met on february 11th and as you saw on the board agenda there were a number of policies that were presented for the board tonight um i i wanted to mention there were 88 pages of policy that were sent to us for review and i i just want to thank um the administrative team for their hard work on staying on top of all the policies a lot of this is um you know updating policies to make sure that we're compliant with the laws and and the laws are always changing um it's a lot of work i know when i got the packet for the policy committee my eyes kind of bugged out it's like 88 pages uh but you know that's just reading it you know the people that are working on it and you know making sure that it's correct um you know it's a lot of work so i just want to thank you all for that okay anyone else okay seeing none we do have a need for closed session whereas the board of education must discuss matters which are not appropriate for discussion in a public meeting and the board of education intends to discuss matters as follows those items listed in tonight's agenda the land for the closed session is estimated to be one hour after which a public meeting of the board shall reconvene and action will not be taken can i please have a motion to go into closed session move by laurie second by mark ii is there any discussion motion carries board members want to remind you to please log out of this session and into closed session for those of you who joined us tonight thank you stay safe you

uh before i make the motion are there any changes that should be made by the board members seen as there are none i will make the motion that the board moves that the board education approve the minutes from meetings held on january 21st and february 4th 2021. all those in favor please raise your hands it is unanimous thank you uh moving on uh miss holland do we have any correspondence um well we we did get a letter from deborah menke a teacher at norton um i'm not going to read it all the way through because of the time but will be entered into the you know minutes of the meeting um but essentially uh her letter is um a request that early dismissals be added to the calendar again this year to enable teachers to collaborate and have planning time um because the the early dismissals that were added this year have been extremely beneficial and have enabled teachers to really maximize their teaching um and so she it's a very nice letter and it's uh i i really appreciate the fact that she has made some really good arguments for including extra early dismissals to provide that time for teaching collaboration time for teachers um so that's from deborah manke thank you and that's the only correspondence that we have great thank you jeff did you want to say something to that or what would you say that you know i respect deb's opinion tremendously she's our teacher of the year um i don't know to what degree she's aware that there are already i think it's five collaborative days built in per the contract agreement for next year uh that weren't there in the past but i'll see deb again soon and i'll ask her you know if that was what she was thinking or something else but um you know i think there are there's particularly this year been tremendous value and i'll talk a little bit about that my superintendent's report great thank you jeff uh catherine any other correspondents i'm sorry no no thank you thank you for the for the email to the board we all received it um moving on to the next uh i lost my place bear with me our next item on agenda i believe is a superintendent's report yes it is uh dr sullin all right let's kick this into high gear the moment we've all been waiting for dude already up with all due respect for the finance report mr massiana anyway um just quick covet overview um i will revisit this slide that uh there are a myriad of strategies uh mitigation strategies and data that we evaluate to determine how do we manage this um pandemic for our students and i want to remind everybody you know our our goal excuse me is to get as many students into class as many days in front of teachers as as we can safely for students and teachers taking a look at our current data we don't in order to maintain privacy we don't publicize when there are less than six students or staff members who are being impacted so what you see there is not much i mean we have about 5 000 people students and staff across the district and what you see here is very limited covet impact at this point in a year so kudos to our students and staff for employing you know the mitigation strategies we're supposed to thank you so much for our parents who being careful with their students particularly if they think they may be sick or they're sick themselves and not sending them to school um one thing i want to point out is that you know we're experiencing some like contradictory or incomplete information from the state slash cdc right now so the cdc put out recent guidance about um community spread and returning to school they use a a metric um titled the number of uh coveted positives in the community over a seven day period uh per 100 000 people they calculate theirs different than the way the state calculates the same titled metric and recently there was a a dph call on tuesday that said basically yeah we're not following the cdc guidance on that this is the metric that we're following um and frankly i mean it's it's less conservative than the cdc guidance but i have to say it's worked very well for us and obviously you know we we've had great success with returning our students to school and i think it's reflected too i think our parents are feeling more comfortable um with the transitions that we're seeing i think it's a combination of parents feeling more comfortable and recognizing how important it is to have face-to-face instruction so the number of remote students or the percentage of the school district population that is currently remote is 19.66 percent across the district as of today and you compare that to about a month ago less than a month ago it was 25 so we see more students migrating back to in-person instruction and we're handling that transition pretty successfully why i mean i talked a little bit about uh the combination of factors the the the idea that the numbers are dropping and people feel a little bit more comfortable plus you know maybe feeling pushed a little bit by recent data like this that um the this is an online mental health screening tool provided by mental health america this year basically they've seen 10 000 responses a day which is double their typical response so if people are dealing with mild to moderate or mild to severe depression or anxiety they take this in the this quiz online and the the greatest driver of that is loneliness and isolation right now and you know you think about the the our students they're not experiencing uh you know physical damage on the outside you don't see that they're perhaps lonely or isolated it's what people not only our kids but older older folks are experiencing on the inside and this is just 11 to 17 year olds so basically our high school population the middle school uh you know late elementary and middle school students are in school every day and i think there's a benefit to that as much as they miss out on a lot of other activities in life right now because of kobit at least they're seeing their peers every day so cheshire high school what are we doing to move forward there i grade out some of the previous stuff that we've talked about and you know darkened some of the um items that we have executed since the last meeting and where we are so dr gad gave a survey that we had talked about to all all parents who their children were not in full time we had 266 students expressing interest to return four days a week so that's basically you have to cut it in half to add it to the cohort because 100 you know all those students were already attending two days a week so um we're adding 133 onto each day for the cohorts and we went through all of the sections there we have 1006 basically class period meetings at cheshire high school only four of them had any sort of issues with seating when we added all these people back so we you know have done it at a time where the numbers are way better much lower community spread done it in a way that provides a secure environment for our students and staff that's safe and we can even conform to lunch capacity limits so we feel really good about taking that step forward for our students at this time and we feel like i said safe for them but also you know certainly necessary for them as i said before we're retaining that wednesday remote day we do our wellness wednesdays on that we can't underscore how important mental health is during this time and that's a great time for all of our people to see each other together no masks i talked alluded to the fact that i guess that we were going to continue to explore some dates for collaboration we have found this to be incredibly valuable um the time that our teachers are spending collaborating on what they're doing uh has translated to some solid academic success for our students when you know you know kevin and marlene uh presented at the curriculum committee meeting um not this past one but the one prior about the academic achievement that our students are experiencing in spite of what the all the disruptions they've had in instruction since last march um so what we are doing moving into march and april i hate to um add half days and stuff but if you know if it weren't so incredibly valuable uh we wouldn't be doing it and it's not with the same frequency necessarily as we've done in the past but uh it is the addition of of a few days so uh the high school we have a professional development already on the ninth we're gonna add collaboration for k through eight um and that's you know this these when we add these dates we try and be considerate of if there's a uh a younger child that's gonna be home for the day if we add a collaboration day on that day for the high school then maybe somebody's around to watch a younger child um you know in the home so we have uh added these days we're adding these days into the calendar and i'll be sending this out shortly for our parents to um plan accordingly and so that's that's it for my um update uh sharing the screen thank you uh dr questions faith and then adam good faith um thank you jeff just question um do you have another date you know for example governor lamont has said that um he's going to be lifting restrictions march 19.

so you know that's that's out there are you do you have a date where you're looking to bring more kids into the high school um sure yeah so do you even have a schedule yes on march 1st uh we are bringing back those 266 students that express interest that's everybody who answered the survey expressing interest every per what we did ask in the survey though is you know kind of future thinking uh maybe you'd be interested may april 1st or may 1st so we're taking a look at how do we adjust to that transition on march 1st what are the numbers look like and then we'll examine how to bring more people back after that if there's interest um because right now like i said we're accommodating everybody who expressed interest for march 1st so um you know provided it's there we want to try and bring back more people do you think it's possible that you will get everybody who expresses interest back in school before the end of the year well we're doing that now for march first everybody who's no i really yeah no you know i hope um that that's the case i i'm really you know i'm pretty optimistic given the rate at which we've been vaccinating people um working with maura we have about 150 staff members who have been vaccinated already uh you know some of those a good percentage of them are 65 plus and they've been vaccinated but a good percentage of them are also we when we've had excess vaccinations available at the pool we've gotten people over we're making the environment safer for students and staff and so as long as we can continue to do that i think we can continue to bring back everybody who wants to be there that's our goal thanks okay uh adam is next and then tim uh jeff so i'm just trying to wrap my head around the percentage of students uh so 266 is that that's out of the entire so so what's there like forgive me it's i think it's a thousand students at the high school is that right uh 1366.

okay way under okay so 1366 are two days a week right now right right two days well 1366 total students of those total students we have um let me pull up the exact number again i don't want to misquote that here let me see sorry i must have been using 1988 numbers for my high school enrollment reference sorry about that that's all right we uh we have about 400 um remotes let me see there we go it wouldn't load for a minute now we got it oh okay i'm sorry so there's all right so there's 400 there are full remote so back those out yeah so you back out the 379 that are full remote that leaves us with 987 total students um of those there's a percentage i don't have the exact number adam but there's a percentage who wanted to stay hybrid um so i think it's a it's roughly 200 students so we'll have 750 coming every four days a week and we might and we'll have the 100 um on top of that two days a week it'll be half and the other two days will be the other half so roughly every day we're about 850 kids uh so that so that 266 number was what the people who didn't want to return no that's that's everybody who wasn't uh of everybody who responded that they did want to return okay so then so then so by march 1st then you're saying that uh over 150 we'll have about 850 of our 1350 students in four days a week right yeah backing up the full remote kids and all that stuff so but so but so that's like two-thirds of the uh available students who weren't remote will be returning four days a week correct okay well that's great happy to hear that fantastic yeah it's a positive for us i think you know and for the students more importantly that we're able to do this safely and um the the numbers are right right now to be able to do that great thank you uh tim thanks tony i yeah i agree with adam about that's great thank you for getting the students into the high school as many as you can um [Music] with regard to the loneliness you have been talking about before uh so i'll just say i mean i've heard from parents and this is down to the elementary level below you know well below age 11 where it's a factor sure um so uh early dismissal so i know you were talking about this year but looking out to next year just in terms of planning for parents uh hoping you can get something out sooner rather than later i don't know how it would work for other parents but i'm thinking that something like you're doing this year if you're gonna have a bunch of them a bunch of early dismissals to put it in a consistent manner where it's the same day every week um yeah i mean yeah this year is like really in terms of planning a wild anomaly for us and next year um as we've done in years past we do get this out well before the end of the the school year um so that we can we can plan once the calendar has been adopted then we plan the early dismissals usually we have a meeting of our administrative at the next meeting of our administrative team we'll get everybody together and say okay these are some of the times we've had in the past let's do this and then we'll get the calendar out shortly thereafter so it usually turns around pretty quick once it's approved uh so that people can plan for next year yeah i mean the concern i have is just parents who have to take time off oh absolutely yeah i mean you understand that absolutely yeah with regard to uh substitutes is that working out okay for you are most of the teachers coming in i mean i've seen in the last day or two my wife told me it's worth one or two percent for the state so yeah i mean our teachers are are in i mean obviously we still have other situations that occur you know whether you have you know minor surgeries or major issues or where we always need um substitutes but we've run into like this year has been amazing with respect to substitutes and i know marlene you know is really excited about the fact that we can provide professional development periodically have you know critical meetings that occur during the school day where we have our teachers available and we're able to cover everybody with substitutes because that doesn't always happen and so um it's really been a godsend for us to to make sure that our schools stay open but we're able to even perform some of the functions we would normally you know plan to do but sometimes are unable to because of substitute shortages thank you um and the the last point i i got an email myself um our parent generally speaking your parents following the drop-off procedures the for this year and you know i'm sure there's some people there are i'm assuming there's got to be some parents i don't know if it's widespread or not who don't and do administrators you know get in touch with them and just behind them about the rules yeah so i think most of our community understands that our drop-off procedures can be a nightmare in a non-coveted year and that's part of our facility master planning process but um now you can you know triple the headaches and so yes when administrators identify people who don't follow the protocol do we try and you know remind them about what the protocol is and sometimes it takes the reminder um sometimes it's not going to matter uh and i hate to say that but most you know like i said most people are pretty good about it it's just a function of volume um but you know i'd be lying if i said there weren't one or two offenders that it kind of wouldn't matter what you did so is there anything is there anything that could be done about it i mean i don't know what the enforcer is sometimes we notify the police if it gets back or something you know but okay oftentimes it's not breaking a rule a law it's breaking a rule and so we don't have felony arriving early at drop off you know unfortunately okay thank you thanks uh i had a quick question regarding uh vaccination with teachers uh i don't know if we've i haven't seen any official word yet on that i know the preference at this uh various estate levels get folks into the next group 1c get these up on the list do you have any idea if that's going to materialize and um any idea how we're going to schedule are you going to schedule all those 400 possible sure vaccinations with school sure it's been our philosophy to protect our our people that we rely on every single day to be there for our kids um and you know some districts they say you know you know what go in vans get your schedule on your shot on your own do it outside of school time kind of thing and for us we're providing coverage we'll do what we got to do we do have the substitutes to make it happen and we want people for their own health and the sake of all of us in the school system to be vaccinated if that's what they're choosing to do so right now the state has not included teachers exclusively at any level uh there i've watched a lot of frustrating debate where everybody's um advocating for pretty much anybody to be in this next level and i did hear one of the doctors and the committee say well you know we just don't have enough shots to make everybody the next level priority you know if our priority is to keep schools open and to make you know because that's got a huge educational and economic impact then we need to prioritize teachers and i i fully agree with that but um the state has not done that yet my brother's a teacher and his wife is a teacher my sister-in-law in new york they've both already been vaccinated both shots you know it's just connecticut hasn't hasn't done that so i credit maura um that she keeps us you know on the on the will call list if you will and um we try and shoot across the street and get shots no pun intended i guess shoot across the street but um we we get our shots and that's why we've like i said i had about 150 people already vaccinated and i hope that we can continue that that trend thank you as soon as there's no other questions from the board we'll move on mine's going to be very short for uh for the sake of catherine get in the car and driving over and shut off my power sooner or later no no seriously catherine just hang we're almost there uh and i thank you everyone for hand so far very quick update for me is this uh um somewhere i say which paper i was quoted in uh they quoted me as saying that tony pirigini says the town council must pass the budget as adopted i i did not say that what i did say was that the town council i'm sure will be very clever in how they help us address medical benefits trust fund money and i hope that they would pass the educational portion as is um i always say that because i don't want my colleagues in the town council uh being offended i know they're not but there's been some reporting snafus over the last couple months i mean i've seen articles where andrews and michaels have mixed up with each other's names and other things so that being said of course we're to work nicely with the town council and get through this but uh that was it and that being said i'm sure we're going to hear more in the budget in the coming weeks so that that being said we're going to move on um upcoming meetings very quickly um we have a policy committee meeting on march 2nd at 6 30 p.m we have a middle school showcase meeting at march 4th at 7 30 p.m cricket community meeting 7 pm on march 8th and we have a board of ed business education business meeting on march 18th uh uh there will be uh either board of ed planning committee meeting of the whole or special board event meeting in next two weeks to does this continue discussions about school options preference tonight was talk a little bit more about six to rate since you already have some data on that and if we can get smc community feedback sooner than later to help them get to um to you know a final plan and and and get their timeline so be on the lookout for some communications from carol and possible base for that and uh that being said we are at the end um do we uh need to adjourn an executive session i believe actually we did have that listed on the agenda but there's not an update you know i thought that there may be one available i apologize for that connecting with you earlier tony but no i didn't think of the cross but hallelujah we're not going to executives so that being said is there a motion to adjourn the meeting catherine motions don't moved adam seconds all those in favor the meeting is adjourned thank you everyone carol team mike everyone thank you everybody good night stay safe good night good night everyone

welcome in sir arena devin dobeck alongside colin casey and we are excited for back-to-back nights of hockey and not to mention the game tomorrow but anyways the east long meadow spartans will take on the low lions colin coming in what do the spartans have to look out for with the lions well this lion's team's much improved from the year before uh they i think they only ended up with three wins in 2019 2020 and here they are this season with eight wins i believe coming into this game so uh different division for uh for sure um for ludlow compared to east song meadow we'll see how much of a difference it is between a team that's had success this season and a team like you saw metal that's trying to end a pretty lengthy winless streak absolutely i spoke with coach dan reed pre-gaming he said this is a must-win uh game for the team and obviously you think all of them are ludlow a division lower spartans you know needs some momentum when they got miniaturg on tap for tomorrow as cj calogy in the corner boards trying to get something going very low glass here at sierra arena haven't been here since the long meadow game last year and now dobeck behind the goal looking in front he's got hands as a wrap around lou keynes makes it one nothing early 29 seconds in colin yeah just 29 seconds all it took it was a quick dump in down the near side and haynes kind of just looked towards the net and realized nobody was on him so he decided to go for the quick wrap around caught everybody by surprise including tyler chares the goaltender so exactly the start you want if your coach dan reed won nothing early and yeah i spoke with coach reed and i i said listen i made a point i was like in the games luke haynes has scored there's they spartans have either they've come out with a point every time lou caines has scored um so that's something to look out for and great that he gets on the board early and we are on a iphone hotspot we had to do another last minute crunch um so we're on an iphone hotspot hopefully it's working out for you but yep uh shout out to dovex for having unlimited data or else we may not be bringing you hockey tonight because we are in the boonies and we had to we had to act fast and also shout out to mrs haines she offered to bring a booster but even that probably wouldn't have done it with the 3g data that we're on but here we are spartans with a one nothing lead early and now walking in for the lions palmer and i don't know what just happened that looked like it came out from behind sherwood collin didn't hit the problem i think it snuck through his pads and actually did glance off the post he never even saw it but luckily a good job by the spartans defense to clear immediately out of the crease and chris sherwood goes down into the boards hard and we're going to get stoppage i think we're going to see our first power play of the game yep interference the call all right i wonder if that's uh who it sure would but anyway spartans will go to the power play that'll be colby palmer the one going to the box captain dobeck line out there for the spartans and opposite of him will be ben corbin the leading scorer and i believe he has six colin we talked about pregame yes six he came in with another three others with five it's actually been pretty balanced scoring when you think about it four different players with five or more goals they make up for 75 percent of ludlow scoring but right now their main focus is to keep the deficit one as pretty good start to this penalty kill for the lions and corbin trying to kill some clock there and now good for check for macquarie to kill some time now dobeck finding haines he's already got one and we know he'll be looking for more if anyone likes to shoot the puck on this team it's him and dobeck trying to chop it back to haines too much for him to handle there dobek gets it back chips it on the boards and ludlow unable to clear now for the lions sam cochi another guy with five goals and luke haynes dobeck got caught offside not sure i agree with that one but we'll have a driver yeah i think he actually was just a fraction ahead of that play he was trying to time perfectly where his uh haynes teammate was coming back towards the blue line but just about a fraction of a second out of sync that would have been a really nice odd man rush for the spartans on the power play alec nero now winning the draw for the spartans we saw him playing wing last night he was the lone goal scorer for ellen meadow and sherwood was taking the draws but looks like they've gone back to the original plan i mean if you want to talk about a tough season for the spartans with just one win so far but alex nero a real bright spot for this team this season he's got four goals on the year yep yep so yeah definitely some confidence for the freshman heading on as speak of the devil he enters the zone and tries to get one on net very weak shot aiden fisher giving chase he's in a scrum with nick soja and now sherwood dropping it back down to row back out will flash a risha and a save made by cherist now wow that's kind of [ __ ] skips up there and then aiden fisher buries it to nothing east long meadow i think that's fisher's second of the year as he's able to sneak that one past the again i think ludlow just kind of slow to react as that puck came free right on the far side circle and fish are able to wrist it past charest who's off to a tough start this evening but yeah i mean this is by far the best start of the season i think for the spartans in any game they've played absolutely colin we're just two minutes and about 50 seconds in and spartans have a two goal lead with a lot of hockey left to play not something we've said very often they've had one two goal lead and obviously that miniature game that ended in heartbreaking fashion but also of one of the brighter spots in the spartan season as dobeck in front puck skips out to haines and now he tries to play it back for arnold but it's intercepted and we see a few turnovers there one of the good things to note for the spartans thus far they don't look tired after playing a game last night and having one tomorrow the energy level has been really impressive through this first almost five minutes and maybe a few confidence and you know that provides a little extra energy following the early quick goals but we'll take it now cuen in front nobody on the doorstep to finish that one and now haynes i'm not sure i think that was a shot but anyways bouncing puck in front you come back to o'brien he's tries to keep the zone unfortunately he's unable to and now with speed sam kochi flying in he takes a spill he's slow to his feet now fisher another freshman and wakar and now clark in a battle with arnold and the corner boards lions trying to make something happen in the offensive zone but nero comes away with the loose puck he makes a move around one man and pucks intercepted by pereira and then lifted out of play i'm not sure what i wonder how delay a game works with boards that are so short colin yeah i mean at the uh at the amateur level there is no delay of game plan i believe they treat it just like in icing as they do at the college level so far and i honestly like that rule because there's it's delay a game so rare and you it's so hard to really be able to lift the puck out of play in in an attempt to get your team a face off but if you haven't played it's just an icing that's penalty enough you got tired legs on the ice you can't make the change the advantage still stays with the attacking zone team yeah great points made there as la flesh trying to spin it back in sure wood tapping it to narrow looking in fisher again that one whizzes by on the short side ludlow trying to make something happen spartans have been pretty much in control which is which feels really good to say let me tell you and now laflesh trying to get one on net redirected by fisher unfortunately didn't get to the net now ludlow trying to break it out they turn it over la flesh getting it to sherwood dobeck calling out his name dobeck kind of turns it over tries to work it to haines haynes back to the flesh and now ludlow trying to go the other way unfortunately it's turned over for them ludlow having a tough time connecting passes now la flesh he blows a tire turnover made unfortunately ludlow able to take advantage unable to take advantage and now haynes gets it knocked away hey what car haynes and dobeck that whole line's been out there for a while but still just great energy so far and the other way now here come the lions arnold banks it's a cune and now dobeck will dump it in and finally colin that line able to get off the ice yeah good shift for them yeah good two-minute shift it seemed like and when you're getting that type of uh that type of minutes on your top line and productive minutes at that that's a big reason why you're up two nothing early in this game now chad o'brien looking to work it to sherwood it skips through his skates now trying to regroup his babieri he bank pass over to granfield and granfield trying to work it up ice to gomes who i believe is another five goal scorer he is so lolo got some scoring i'm not counting them out of this game just yet despite the spartans early uh attack with two goals and we have 8 20 to go in period one now o'brien working it to fisher scores two nothing for those of you just tuning in devin dobeck alongside colin casey you're watching spartans hockey live on lcat from sierrina getting the first one was oh my gosh yeah haynes 29 seconds in a wrap around similar to the one but similar to the one we saw against minichog but unfortunately uh not as much flare that goal is probably one of my favorite goals i've called in hockey and dobeck walking and he scores braden doback gets his first of the season that's a frustrating one if you're ludlow because they looked like they had won the draw back they didn't get it back very far but dobeck quickly pouncing on the puck skating right past the dot and just a quick release able to beat the goaltender to rest on the blocker side i think you got that one so really great first period for the spartans but here come ludlow the other way and caloji a great defensive play made there so spartans up three nothing on goals from haynes fisher and dobeck and we still got over half a period to go and that one goes off the side of the cage now trying to make something happen to the lions cochi unable to win the battle there cology gets spun around and kind of has to do a behind-the-back move with his stick kun finds haynes luke haynes entering the zone with speed he pulls up waiting to get his defenseman in the zone cj calogy the captain wrist one on net and that one is stopped and held on to yeah i think that was that that ended up getting stuck in tourists uh equipment there you had trouble controlling it but kind of bobbled around and he was able to have it but not exactly what you want if you're the goaltender you got another defensive zone draw coming and the last one resulted in an immediate goal from braden dobeck now chad o'brien from the point one way wide fisher the first one there and sure with a little body laid there and then a shot on goal by nero he was in tight nothing doing there three-nothing spartans if you are just joining us you missed quite a lot and travis arnold making a few deep moves travis arnold sticking with it unfortunately finally turns it over and now a break for the lions brandon gomes a bomb and it's gloved and saved by colin sherwood a couple of great opportunities for both teams one just created by arnold i mean some phenomenal dekes through the neutral zone able to get it all the way through and then the puck got knocked off his stick led to gomes going the other way on the breakaway but sherwood looking really sharp despite not getting a lot of action in this first period makes the easy save on a pretty healthy looking shot from brandon gomes and sherwood coming off a night with 43 saves and on 49 shots and let me tell you five of the six maybe even six out of the six there was nothing he could have done about just some absolute rockets from in tight and redirects and all sorts of crazy stuff and it came last night and great rivalry old school game we saw a physical game and if you hung with us you know what we're talking about dobek trying to work it to cue and cross ice he gets hooked a little bit and now in a scrum in the sideboards a lot of activity going on kalodi trying to break it out for the spartans he gets it over to kun they stay on side teddy kun leaves it for dobeck go back tapping it to garvey now kuhn finding kaloji or haynes rather behind the net and that one will go for an icing and we'll take it all the way back to the ludlow zone six minutes to go period one spartans with a three-nothing lead another defensive zone draw for ludlow although they got a couple of decent shifts strung together after that third goal we'll see if it leads to any momentum they've got that breakaway opportunity and here they come up ice once again with numbers now travis arnold behind his own net makes a deke moving gets by a man arnold working it up to nero nero loses it and the leading scorer corbin can't hang on to it in the neutral zone fisher definitely got caught offside there and still there but we'll get the draw 37 to go period one ludlow trying to get some momentum shifted their way oh sherwood and now corbin leaves it for sanderson and arnold comes away with a loose puck and fires one on net it's tipped way up and way out of play you gotta think colin as you were telling me pre-game what is it gonna take for them to make these boards higher or add some netting because yeah these pucks fly all over the place let me tell you i think the boards and glass combined for everywhere except a couple of the corners have a little bit of an extension there where it looks to normal height but they can't be more than six seven feet tall they're they're not very big i would say six feet tall max yeah [Music] and i believe we're going to get it offside so we'll do it outside the blue line and this is an interesting matchup if you think about the what the path both teams took going into this game where you saw meadows been facing some really tough opponents including three games against minichog and going o2 and one against them it seems to be building character with this team and realizing hey they have to work for every inch against minute jog they're right now working for every inch against ludlow and it's paying off and kurtz turns it over now kaloji trying to do it himself still looking for his first goal of the season i believe he had one last year and clojie ludlow trying to swing one in front of the net mouth nobody home now corbin trying to do it himself what the lions have relied on all season they haven't had much to show in period one i believe sherwood stopped maybe two pucks tonight one got by him don't know how that didn't go in the net but and that really could have changed the complexion of that game because that took place before the schools yeah haynes takes a dive and i think it might have actually been the before the first goal too it was really early on i'm trying to remember well we scored like 20 seconds in so fisher walking in and aiden fisher goes top cheddar for his second of the game four nothing east long meadow just a really well aimed shot and i think for jurassic one you might want to have back because anytime you get beat from a a decent length you want to you want to have that one back simply and does it it's insult to injury when it ends up being a a four-nothing game with still four minutes left in the first but again a lot of time left and we'll see if the spartans are able to keep up this momentum and take it take the shutout i should say in the first intermission nero tied up with grainfield now he's trying to make something happen lions trying to break it out pyre is unable to receive that one fischer dumps it in and avoids the hit aidan fisher having a probably his best game thus far enough just for the two goals he's kept his head up and and been playing some of his best hockey maybe a little confidence after you get a goal but he looks like a new guy out there yeah i think he also had another shot or two in addition to the goalie sport so he's been positionally in the right places and he's certainly gotten reward for them so far in this first and now walking in unfortunately it hops over the stick of car bad break for the lions there is he the car was in all alone and so was joseph pires on that rebound he was on that back post and he couldn't get the backhand through there as you're gonna stop it here that the puck was tied up on the far corner board so both teams will get some fresh flagged on the ice so let me do some math here colin spartans have scored if i'm not mistaken nine goals this season and four four so 13 now period so they have almost a third of their scoring coming in this game and we're only in the first period lou kane's walking in that one skips by on the far side the flesh gets burned and now ludlow trying to gain some speed but we'll flash all 250 pounds of him are not gonna let you box him out and lions just learned that that is a solid dude and haynes lays a big hit feeling that one with steel and now cune trying to make something to happen nolan will carr getting it back to steal and now a car dumping it in two minutes to go period one ludlow looks really gassed so far in this first period it's clear that they haven't played i think a team with that is as well conditioned as the spartans have been part of that's just because of the competition they've gone up against they've faced some really fast teams and it shows and walking into row now fischer trying to work it to caloji he gets it there unfortunately grandfield there and he swings it out of the zone and that one goes into the penalty bench this series just so many i would not want to play here man i'll tell you yeah that's certainly frustrating and not only that not just the penalty bench not having any glass but the shorter glass all around for defenseman when you're trying to clear the puck out to the neutral zone you got to be able to keep it on a lower trajectory which is certainly going to take at least a period i think for these guys to adjust to i'm surprised we haven't seen more pucks flying out of play now ludlow opportunity trying to be generated but spartans are going to have a two on one up ice alec nero sure would caught offside i don't agree with that one but i'm not going to complain too much two on one negated sherwood couldn't hold the foot apparently allegedly yeah would have been a golden chance to tack on that fifth goal but chris sherwood's still looking for his first high school goal as well and now fisher trying to swing it back nero for fisher lyon trying to break it out grandfield off the boards that kid can fly o'brien the first one there though and he makes a few deep moves unfortunately puts in a dangerous area of the ice spinning around now we're under a minute to play o'brien takes a big hit gets his cage messed up a bit and in front good defensive play made by arnold [Music] now sherwood tied up with a car he drops it back down to granfield in front unfortunately palmer unable to receive that one 30 seconds to go arnold trying to chop it and now kyung and walking in now another shot rebound that was dobeck on the shot and now calogi dumping it in ten seconds ago throwback wins the race now leflash trying redirected by kuhn and two one first period will come to a conclusion spartans with their best period all season up four nothing on the ludlow lions on the back of goals by haines fisher times two and dobeck wow colin any thoughts after that first period well the main thing to take away from that first fear the performances of those top two lines i mean you got two goals from uh from that first line of hanes and dobeck and then fisher on the second line i believe picking up the other two goals so when you've got top six forwards playing at that high level it's no surprise that the spartans come out to an early and big lead now the question is are they going to get complacent are they able to keep that fire going and when you're a team coming in that's only got one on the season you're taking every period you can to really just kind of push this team out of out of com competition really in this game and that's exactly what the spartans need to do in the second is they can't the good thing about not having intermission is really just a time out essentially so they can go right back out there and keep that momentum going without actually having to keep you know keep that motivation through 10-15 minutes of rest time so if you're the spartans just hey keep doing what you're doing and you're going to find yourselves with an even bigger lead after two periods absolutely colin we've been enjoying it i'm sure code three has two after uh frustrating game against minute jog and then coming off that uh well i mean it was one one going into period three so you know something had to be going right first period didn't go too well second period spartans actually outshot minichog nine to seven which was pretty impressive considering what it's been like all season um but then you know third period unfortunately they collapsed but spartans being resilient having a game today coming in getting four goals in the first period great start for them best all season and you know it's great momentum for these guys heading into tomorrow with miniature you know miniature hasn't been a team the past couple games that's really blown them out early and if the spartans can jump on the falcons early like they did uh in the second meeting with them who knows what could happen tomorrow we're looking forward to that i know i'm looking forward to that as we're looking to wind things down here and head on to period two colin what this friends need to keep doing to keep pedal to the metal and hang on here uh the the four check has been really impressive so far i think that's one thing to to look out for towards the end of the period especially i don't think they ended up scoring but there was numerous chances where the defense came and hustled to the blue line to try to keep the puck in and found some success so as great as the scores have been on offense credit to the defenseman also keeping these pucks in generating shots from the point there's a couple of nice shaves saves by charest at the end of the period that really kept it a four-nothing game so if they can keep getting those shots from the point that really opens up their offense even more where ludlow doesn't just have to worry about plays down low they got to worry about up top as well second period underway here at sierra arena looks like they got a new scoreboard and we were noticing earlier looks good and the ice is redone you know they're keeping it up unfort maybe they had a lot of time with cove it had no public skate anymore but anyway car trying to look down low unfortunately too much for corbin to handle and now cj calogy the captain behind the boards la flesh rips one around luke haynes gonna have a burst of speed trying to generate a chance blue canes can't touch a pass to accara great back check by him in order to break up the two on one for the spartans now in neutral ice trying to get some speed sam kochi now liu kane's walking in he fires one low and wide now la flash cune trying to leave it back in dove skating hard he's able to win the puck away and he hangs on to it la flesh now keeping the zone go back down to kun and dobek gets dropped kun hanging on to the puck and it comes out unfortunately just out of the reach of the flash and he tries to win the race with kochie see the lions cochi and corbin and those type of players are and as well as ryan kurtz are going to have to get going you're leading scorers and right now fans have not been able to break sherwood grand field and a battle with cology and now a bomb from the point pereira unable to get a good stick on that pereira trying to dump it back in sherwood gets run into from behind by pires great shift right now from bryce pereira able to get a shot on goal and then keep the puck in two separate times but unable to do it right there nero off the bank pass from sherwood three on one for the spartans the row walks in shot blocker save made and now pereira trying to tie it up behind his own net it's won by nero now calogi wristing it around the boards pereira haynes unable to keep the zone for the spartans and pires throws it in and laguerre on the forecheck now for the lions haven't heard much from him tonight it might be his first shift will carr trying to make something good happen for the lions lou haynes gets it back and unfortunately can't get a good shot away there it hops away from him teddy kun and keloji shot blocked down in front good play by drawing a lot of bodies over on the right side of the ice kung walking in he's going to go around the net gets it out to kaloji kalogi wrist shot might have been blocked down a little bit now kuhn dropping it down to dobeck dobeck back towards kuhn and then he drops it back down to him puck won away by car spartans seem to be a bit out of position and to the dismay of coach reed and trango now sherwood trying to keep the zone for the spartans and you can see coach reed trying to get his guys going seems like he's having some words with the top unit yeah i mean they haven't been able to find the back of the net so far in the first four minutes there's been some good zone time but ludlow i think has responded pretty well after a subpar first period starting to see them have a little bit more cleaner entries and get a couple of good looks so far in colin stairwell if you're just joining us fashionably late the score is four nothing east long meadow at sierra arena off goals from haines and two from aidan fisher the freshman as well as braden dobeck getting his first of the season ten and a half minutes to go period two and spartans trying to add to their monumental lead now a car for the lions looks like dobeck went for a little penguin slide there kyung trying to work at the haynes gets caught up in the skates of a lion and now that one goes the length of the ice for an icing with 10 12 to go in period two yeah the the breakout we'll see if the spartans can kind of get back to where they were in those in that first period they have had a couple of good odd man rushes so far in the period but nothing has really materialized where they've been able to find a real quality shot on the goaltender tyler charest shout out to jamie on the camera with an unbelievable pit stop there during the whistle quick little change there and we're back to you sorry if we lost you for a sec and a bomb and loose puck in front big shot by kurtz there trying to find his sixth of the season and that one sent back in o'brien giving chase now haynes trying to work it to garvey hannah garvey hannah almost cashed in last night he had a few opportunities one really good shift and now lions walking in and ripping it way over the net brandon combs another prolific score for the lions he's had a couple of chances tonight hasn't been able to capitalize just yet that one skitters through the crease garvey hannah trying to clear the zone now the flash kendrick la flesh wrapping it around the boards and now walking in granfield shot was deflected by o'brien could have been costly for the spartans but they get bailed out granfield flails at that shot attempt run into by sherwood and another shot goes over the glove and wide on the far side of sherwood that one hops over the glass trying to catch it and bring it back into place with car you can do your best ken griffey jr impersonation at this class and try to take one back from going over but not quite able to do so that time 8 29 to go period to spartans still shutting out the lions 4 nothing you're watching spartans hockey live on lcat we're happy to have you on board on friday night i'm sure there's no place you'd rather be right now than watching spartans hockey they're a real hand pass there yep so yeah these look the lines thwarted but still i've liked what i've seen from ludlow in the second period uh reminds me i think of the spartans in the third period a few weeks back in that rough game they had against minichog where things hadn't been going their way but they were able to take a you know play a strong final period that'd be something to take out of it and maybe a strong final two periods is what ludlow needs to really get back right into it when they get back into uh divisional play against some of the opponents that they've had a lot of success against this year now in a row he loses it in the offensive zone cology rips one and looks like came into sanderson pretty good and now knocking down but narelle able to bury it aiden fisher what an assist mate as he was getting knocked down and aiden fisher with his third point of the evening and alec nero with his fifth of the season at number five for the freshman and all set up really by a great play i think by nero to knock the puck down out of midair then he went straight to the front of the net he was in perfect spot to fire that puck home and definitely a bright future for him with three more years of eligibility i think he's only going to get better as time goes on yep and now in front lions trying to make something happen corbin and now cross ice kurtz unable to hang on to that one spartans catch a break there yes certainly did i think if he was able to get a one-timer on that sherwood wouldn't have even seen the puck and it would have been five to one as this puck ends up in the bleachers i mean if there was fans here someone could probably be going to the hospital luckily that one didn't come in too hot and i guess you know it's it is high school level thankfully it's not like you know division one college playing here or else someone might be losing some teeth oh and arnold rips one off of curts and he's gonna limp off the ice that one hurt me garvey hannah on the four check they haven't changed the score to five i'm pretty sure it's five nothing as we're halfway through the contest garvey hannah with another good shift here providing some pressure so our now over 50 percent of the goals they scored all season long been able to do it in just a period and a half it's pretty incredible maybe it's sierra arena maybe we should play here tomorrow that's good point now teddy kun still looking for his first high school one and i'd really like to call it so hopefully he's able to make something happen here now travis arnold breaking it out to who else but teddy kun and a good forecheck by him unfortunately it skitters out of his own garvey hannah tried to keep it not enough sherwood in the midst of everything puck gets chopped around and now cj calogy leading the break and a three on two cj calogy trying to go around the net mouth he gets run into and now grandfield he's small but he sure is fast and he's trying to find larone in front that's all rather that is off but you know who cares officials taking the time now to adjust it only gone off about a couple of inches that might be why they kept play going but yeah the near side mooring seemed to kind of just come a little bit loose 5 35 to go period to the score five nothing in favor of the east long meadow spartans and colin coming in i was not expecting it to be this much of a gap between the two teams ludlow having a strong year from everything i've heard coming in so definitely unexpected but spartans will take the five nothing lead now calogi spinning it back hanes trying to get there but unfortunately picard wins the race the flash keeping the zone haynes will collect it in the corner boards he spins away from a defender and making another move now dobeck with it behind the net he i think got caught on some snow and he lose it he retains possession after absorbing the hit and now trying to spin away haynes not on the same wavelength with him and spartans turn it over hannah flips it back into the offensive zone but now granfield with speed unfortunately he turns it over i said unfortunately a lot so apologies for that i guess that's my go-to word been an unfortunate night for the lions thus far so i guess i'm just trying to you know we we've we've had a few games where we we've been in their positions so i definitely understand uh i i have some empathy to say the least and now wakar firing one that one almost found its way past sherwood sherwood looking for his first career high school shutout and a shot by corbin whizzes wide great shift from the lions well trying to work it in front of the net sherwood finally realizes free puck and trying to work it to garvey hannah who's been on the ice for a while and arnold riss one sherwood giving chase welcar coming away with it now in a battle nero and fisher and sideboards and now chris sherwood right in front he wrists one from in tight and that's nightmare worthy a great chance for chris sherwood his best of his career by the way uh looks like they made a goaltender change for ludlow as it's david tassinari who's the man in between the pipes now probably should have caught on to that earlier but it is what it is he's replaced the junior tyler terresta i wonder if it took place probably in the interior yeah in that brief intermission and uh to be to be to uh tassinari's credit he's only given up the one goal uh but i will say his team has played a lot better defensively in this second period than they did in the first 307 to go period two spartans with a five goal lead granfield it's tied up with sherwood now fisher looking for his first career high school hat trick a lot of milestones up in the air tonight for the spartans if they continue this great offensive night they've had now in front unfortunately the pass too much for gomes unfortunately again i gotta i need to have an unfortunately jar for like a dollar because that's just been stuck in my head and that needs to stop it's a word of the day and now ludlow trying to put something in front of the net it gets cleared out by the spartan defense tom garvey unable to clear the zone he tries to give a little stick check there and now aiden fisher will dump it in the spartans get a change 208 to go in the second period of action also if someone at home would like to just update i think the quality of the stream is really good tonight correct me if i'm wrong but if someone wants to fire a text of how it's looking at home that would be great not surprisingly another puck ends up out of place that one actually landed on the unfortunately landed a on the ledge up over on the far side of the ice so don't think you're gonna be getting that one back anytime soon face off outside the blue line dobeck kind of goes down on his knees hard there now corbin trying to break away from arnold ties him up and the quality is not bad that's that positivity exhibited from my father it's about as yep all right we'll take not bad honestly do you think it would have been a worse review had braden not scored probably would have got it something like that subpar something 128 to go in the second period it's 5-0 in favor of the spartans shadow brian trying to work at the cune he tries to make a spin move now haynes trying to make a windmill deke he gets his stick tied up don't know how no offside there and haynes gets caved in almost created a great chance for himself keeping the zone as chobi and unfortunately i i ugh that's going to drive me nuts hey you cut yourself off that time yeah it's still still working at it i don't know i usually don't have a word but tonight i do 42 seconds to go be sure to stay tuned for the second intermission report with colin and myself looking forward to breaking down the spartan success through the first two periods of action and also miniature tomorrow previewing that game 30.8 seconds ago sherwood will take the draw the flash lion's a potential two on one but uh lazy play made there and no chance giving out yeah a lot of ice to work with instead just trying to backhand it through his teammate wasn't the right move big collision on the far side of the ice 10 seconds to go nero and now sherwood but lions might get one more shot away on sherwood and 2-1 that will do it for period two so spartans have a five-goal lead after two periods they've scored five goals against agawam in game one but that's pretty much all the scoring we've seen i mean as you said colin more than half their scoring all season being shown here at sierra arena spartans lead the lions five nothing goals once again were from two from aidan fisher one from liu kane's one from braden dobeck and alec nero adding his fifth of the season colin i mean what do we credit the spartan success through this game that hasn't been going their way in the games prior this season well certainly the the rushes have been a lot cleaner throughout this game i mean honestly the second period i think could have been a little bit better if you're coach reed i think you might have wanted a little bit better uh line changes granted this is that this was a period of the long line change with both benches on the far side of the ice so i think that took the spartans a little bit getting used to but they've started to get into a rhythm later on in the period they were able to get the goal from nero but there's definitely some room for improvement if you're the spartans you want to have a really good third period to build on and go into that fourth match up against miniature they certainly seem like they've gotten better every single game against shaw they had that opportunity to win they ended up squandering it ended up tying uh in that second game and even the third game 1-1 going into the third period so they've proven that they can hang with the falcons the important thing is to have a complete game tonight and then have another one tomorrow that way who knows what i mean if you look into you know whatever next season might hold with a lot of this young team coming back if you can finish strong season with some quality wins against opponents like minichog then you're setting yourself up for long-term success for your coach reading the spartans yeah colin and there's been a lot of skepticism around the spartans team here throughout the season with you know you know do they have what it takes to play with these other teams in western mass and you know they've been put to the test um you know on the hot seat um but nevertheless they've you know given their all game in game out and here they are against ludlow up with a five-nothing lead they've hung with miniature the past two games you gotta think that things are starting to fall into place for the spartans so to speak they got two games in the next three days with miniature and then westfield on monday looking forward to that one as well they haven't faced the bombers this year um but yeah i mean and you've got to kill a lot of it coach reed as well you know firing up his guys he's never one that's gonna back down and and also probably the hardest on himself as well as his team and you know he he tries to not take any positives away all he uh thinks about is what can i work on what can we do to make our team better um so you know that mentality that winning mentality and improving mentality is um what is going to help the spartans and you know they got a young group as we've touched on a lot of freshmen and sophomores so you know two and three more years with this core group um of course you're gonna lose the captain and kaloji and john kuhn who we figured out was running the scoreboard um will also be gone but you're gonna get aiden asher back so you're gonna have your top two lines intact colin a lot of positive and upside to look out for but any final thoughts heading into the third period for the spartans to keep rolling into miniature tomorrow uh yeah if they can take that final i would say three four minutes that they played in the second period and apply it to the final 15 minutes of this game i'll really like where they're going at going into that uh that game tomorrow against minute chalk the the first period was exceptional and i think that's you know the best period the spartans have played this year the reality is they're not they're probably not going to have a period like that against minichog where they're able to score four goals against a team that's so fundamentally sound in the falcons so they can get a couple of goals here in this in this period and also keep the shutout intact in the third then you gotta have about as much confidence as you can going into a big matchup against a team you've lost well you've lost twice to and you've tied a game that you probably should have won against them so a lot of frustration i'm sure for the spartans they're taking a little bit of it out right now on ludlow the important thing is they can take that fire into tomorrow's matchup and a great third period will certainly do wonders for them in 15 minutes a lot of time to maybe fill a couple milestones for the spartans teddy cune and chris sherwood both looking for their first high school goal and you know aiden fisher a goal away from a hat trick colin uh 15 minutes away from his first career high school varsity shutout so you know a lot on the line we're looking forward to a great third period and hopefully a spartans with a spartans win god willing something catastrophic doesn't happen um but here we are five nothing 15 minutes to go you're watching spartans hockey live on lcat we'll be with you shortly for period three i think lcat has a really good mics so [Music] uh we're just about set to go for period three here at sierra arena devin dobeck alongside colin casey spartans with a five five-nothing lead over the ludlow lions colin i know we pretty much covered it in the intermission but anything you'd like to touch on before we drop the puck uh i i think if you're ludlow um you you look at that second period and call it a success in my opinion they only allowed one goal and got some great opportunities i think there were one or two opportunities that i was stunned that lula wasn't able to find the back of the net so the chances were there in the second period for the lions big difference is can they capitalize them on them in the third period and try to cut into this five goal deficit man he's he's opposite of course corbin top line center for the lions lion's trying to make something going shots ripped around by cochi now dobeck and haynes together on a two on one dobeck walking in and rips one extremely um far on the inside nowhere near the net and now lions trying to just get anything on net as curt just launches one from outside the blue line steve eiser and special right there but usually eyes i'm gonna go top shelf on that one spartans kind of get lucky there ludlow demand all alone while the spartans were changing out and if the defenseman picked up on it they could have been all alone in for a breakaway over a minute gone by period three for those of you who are tuning in extremely late um wow that's a bit of a dirty hit and i guess yeah but a little late there but it seemed like that was all stick and not much shoulder on that hit and officials picked up on it so just a second penalty of the game and both of them going against ludlow so that's the car but for those of you tuning in extremely late period three of action devin doback alongside colin casey spartans with a five-nothing lead over the ludlow lions two from aidan fisher one from braden dobeck one from haynes and nero rounding out the five goals i think the official call was roughing on that one so let's have a little bit of a conversation with the official but it didn't seem too heated yeah it looked like it was a pretty pretty simple call to make from our perspective that is [Music] and caloji around the net trying to take advantage on the power play lion's clear there arnold keeps it in the skates and kind of makes a silly play there and luckily spartans get bailed out with an offside call i think it might be colder in here than the temperature outside i just wanted to point that out i mean it is it's really cold out here colin you're no polar bear no i would have worn another pair of socks if i knew it was this uh cold my my feet are freezing keep those toes moving hey we'll take cold feet in a five-nothing lead as keloji walking and on a breakaway cj calogy right at the goaltender and he's gonna have some nightmares about that one arnold unable to keep the zone coach reed not please there an emphatic stomp now dobeck over to haynes haynes down to doveck dobeck cycling the puck and he gets checked and slow to his feet but he is up and the flesh trying to throw a man into the boards well then the flesh getting a penalty here yeah he was due for one dirty hit on cochi he sure doesn't like it 12 12 to go period three lions will go well we'll play some four on four hockey for a bit i'm not sure in case you forgot aidan asher and john kuhn running the clock so you know a lot of brain power down there um but unfortunately you know new technology and they're trying to figure things out but they just canceled the penalty clock we're gonna have some issues there i think they're keeping track of it now like in their mind they'll let them know exactly when uh when he's coming out so and sherwood makes a save there and taking a slide is nero and cochi they're trying to get figured out right now oh man yeah i think maybe he gave the official a uh a signal as to when he's coming out so i would say it's probably somewhere in 14 seconds oh no he's just out now see i was one second actually and so spartans on i believe their first kill of the evening colin and haynes trying to gain some speed pass and area risking it but now luke haynes the goalie kind of does like a little slide there yeah bad giveaway in his own end but haynes couldn't quite sneak it past he's had a really strong game of course open the scoring 29 seconds in since then that top line of him and right now dobik out there but uh i'm trying to remember who the other one out there with him that all three of them have been really good this uh this uh this evening of course stoback also with the goal himself absolutely so on the draw on the shorthand lions trying to just have something to show for the 45 minutes in this game go back can't finesse around the defender now a car working at the corbin corbin dropping it down and receiving it back on the give and go he's got space to move he walks in on sherwood sherwood comes up big and a great keep by car keep the zone 25 seconds to go on the flush miner looks like coach reid's not happy about i think the it was a line change that led to that breakaway on the power play but what a save by colin sherwood i mean so much confidence for a guy who hasn't gotten a whole lot of action tonight but when lovo's gotten chances they've been pretty good and he's been really good in that as he has been pretty much all season despite what the final scores a lot of these games say 10 20 to go in period three the flash set to get out of the penalty bench fischer gloves it down [Music] even strength of course and across ice pass knocked down by arnold and now ludlow the other way with speed walking in and sherwood comes up big stoning ethan clark 9 35 to go third period of action spartans close to their second win of the season this tom garvey takes a little slide there now kuhn picking off the pass backhander on net rebound loose garvey walking in throws one down into the boards now nero in front looking for garviana kun teddy kun number one of high school someone grabbed that puck and that all started with a smart play by garvey i think it was as the puck was coming towards him at the blue line he could have tried driving down a net through traffic but instead he throws it into the corner and it leads to the opportunity that's set up and of course q and able to capitalize and to touch down for the spartans are most goals on the in a single game on the season now with six and we still got 909 left in this one now ludlow in the corner cune trying to lift it out to garvey hannah he couldn't handle that one a lot of bodies on the far side of the ice now arnold lays a big hit in the corner boards now doveck with a burst of speed around the goal leaves it off for kun kun too much on the pass from gobek welcar sends it back in the other way now a car walking in and delayed penalty ludlow will go back to the power play at this time it'll be a holding call the guilty party for the spartans will wait but still nothing yet the goalie was skating to the bench for the lions and it looks like it's going to be dobeck have a nice conversation about that one in the car ride homes he can walk home actually he's still talking about it so he's go back two for holding spartans back to the kill now loose puck in front comes in sure and he covers that now i know the goal scored is definitely a bright spot in the period but i think coach reid's not going to like the penalties i've seen already too so far in this period after a really clean first two periods so that's something that that would put that's that's something that would put the spartans in a real big hole against miniature if they find themselves short-handed early and often now corbin cross ice finding his teammate pereira shot on goal save sherwood i think he's got to have at least 12 to 15 saves tonight yeah it's not like it's been a completely quiet night he's the lions didn't get a whole lot in the first period but since then they found a little bit of a rhythm offensively and they they certainly haven't been able to capitalize there've been some a couple of times where you just were surprised they didn't score but they're gaining confidence against a an opponent in a higher division and i think if they were able to play another game against the spartans tomorrow we would see a much closer deficit minute to go on the dobeck minor for holding and a bomb coming in that one almost found its way through big shot by ryan kurtz and now finally cleaning up the loose changes sam kochi lyons on the board on the power play yeah you have to see a replay but i think he just kind of lofted it back towards net and it went off of sherwood skate and then that's a tough one if you're a goaltender especially in a shutout there he probably wishes he'd peeked over his shoulder and seen where that puck was coming but sometimes that's all you need for if you're if you're ludlow to get get a little bit of confidence going they had that one a little bit earlier but just a puck thrown towards net and finally the lions are on the board dobeck winning the draw to arnold garvey hannah out with dobeck and you know who i haven't seen his hanes in a while i wonder what the story is with that i'm trying to look for him on the bench but anyways garvey able to hang on to that one arnold goes into the boards very awkwardly and everybody taking a gasp there slow to his feet but up is colby palmer yeah it goes right to the bench but i think it might just be a uh i think his coach is just like yeah we're gonna give you a breather after that one i don't want you going back out that oh what a huge hit yeah wow getting crunched teddy kun by thomas deroyne branfield trying to run into cune and a shot comes in on sherwood pad save 6 15 to go and now derain shot wide garvey hannah trying to collect it and he will and then he loses it sure would playing it for arnold and now another shot from macar puck comes free and very soft shot from nick soja sure would able to cover that one up 5 46 to go period three yeah not taking any chances this time as we got some words being exchanged before nolan wicker goes to the bench and now nero trying to do well on the forecheck fisher will be forced to dump it in with a delayed offside still off still didn't reset and now fischer knocks it down slings it back in sherwood regroups now the flash fisher he's able to retain it after absorbing the hit he gets knocked down again and it [ __ ] is sent in sherwood will oh what happened behind the play i was looking at sherwood a couple of conversations going on a couple cross checks one of them was sam kochi and things are really starting to break down right now in the final six or seven minutes and fisher takes a dirty hit just as you were saying that colin so who knows what's about to happen but spartan bench and coach reed not happy and nero lays a hit on jeez his body's flying everywhere joe pyre is absorbing that one yeah the hope is that it doesn't boil over but sometimes you get so many of these hits in rapid succession and then someone goes for the home run and ends doesn't end too pretty so yeah geez 4 33 to go period three dobeck winning it o'brien now it comes in front sherwood gets a stick on it and pops it up now there's luke haines now doe back a potential two on one with teddy kun dobek walking in shot and it goes wide and dobeck goes into the boards now hanes trying to walk in lou kane's loses the puck and it comes out to the neutral zone aiden fisher fresh out of the bench is able to retain it for the spartans well brian fires a pass to do back dobeck takes a hit in an awkward area of the ice yeah that that's the that's the max patch ready area where he got rode off into the dasher back in 2011.

dobeck on the doorstep a lot of bodies and spartans swatting at it trying to get it in there and here we go haynes keeping his composure and not retaliating yeah good good job by the officials quickly breaking that one up the puck was loose for a long time and he was eventually able to to get that puck up good thing is there's a little you know thin piece of padding over by the uh scores table but at the same time you know it's still pretty though that glass isn't too giving especially when it's at a 90 degree angle like that 35 to go caloji shot on net save made now sherwood gets tied up in the sideboard and run into nero and puts it in front nobody there fisher dropping it down and now colin dandy seeing some minutes but now walking in here comes the leading scorer and the door is shut corbin was in all alone and colin sherwood comes up big it was a really good move as well there but corbin couldn't quite lift the puck over the pad of sherwood and he has just been spectacular tonight just the one blemish on his night now ryan kurtz walking in on the backhand makes a move and couldn't get it on net we decided a little hit just a little while ago dandy trying to work it to fisher now calogy spartans seem a little tired and they're going to get fresh legs and icing as well 227 to go in the third period dobeck wins the draw now garvey hannah dobeck looks like tom garvey also playing a little forward with flash and now lions trying to make something happen arnold spins a man around and then we see a little sean higgins play made by braden dobeck taking a little spin there 150 to go in the third period action spartans closing in on win number two arnold with a nice little finesse move to step by benji steele and now a shot and an easy glove save on luke martin i sure would see in that one the whole way has glove out sometimes those can catch you by surprise especially in a game where your team's up pretty big but he's certainly been ready for everything and it hasn't been a great period defensively for the spartans they've given up that one goal and given up countless breakaways as well on them so there's certainly you know it's going to be a good win for the spartans to get back in the win column finally since uh since opening night but the same time i think there's definitely some things that can be improved upon going in tomorrow like that and wow what a safe made by sherwood there in tight was colby palmer and i don't know how he didn't fear it yeah i don't think the bench realized how great of a save that was from here i mean he he got that with his blocker cj kologi getting run into by a few lions now grandfield cology runs him over kind of re pays the favor and one minute remaining in the period oh yeah yeah granfield got crushed by kaloja you don't yeah i thought that might have been a penalty there i think that hit was a little bit up high and he's slow to get off and i think he really got his spell wrong also such a seismic match but walking in and another great brilliant save made by colin sherwood but yeah it's calogi also twice the size of him so maybe it was a little high but not really anything he could do about it fisher's gonna go here and a slash from car but spartans will go to the penalty kill as fisher kind of flipped him a little bit but you know should honestly be offsetting his will car through a slash as well but 29.2 seconds spartans will go to the kill yeah again a third penalty of the period so discipline not a good mark on the spartans in this third period and you know i think i think the clock was still going there so um but anyways ludlow one for two on the power play today so that's one bright spot they can take in as they were able to get that lone goal on the man advantage and maybe they could get another one and take a little bit more momentum off this game garvey hannah with an unbelievable shot block on the penalty kill doing his thing and you know that's why coach reed's got him out there able to make plays on the kill 15 seconds to go no icing there colin dandy trying to work it to garvey hannah but now walking in and trying to go short side colin sherwood comes up big 3-2-1 spartans earned their second win of the season 6-1 shout out to our timekeepers aide asher and john kuhn they didn't they've never done this before but they did a pretty good job as they ring a few extra buzzers there so great job by them we're looking forward to seeing aiden back on skates once that ankle injury clears up and john of course the senior but anyways column spartans kind of end on a on a great note i mean the first period you know an absolute flurry with four goals they finished with a score of six one um what do they need to do i mean we've we've talked about this a lot but heading into miniature big game uh what do they need to do well they need to play a full uh was 45 minutes in in this game because you looked coming into this into this matchup today they had nine goals on the season four in the first three in the second and two in the third so it seemed like they've been running out of gas towards the end and you know we're gonna pick up a goal in this third period but i think it's clear that the first period was best period in the game of season long they're going to have to play every single one of those periods against minute chalk like that first period if they want to have a chance against them and they've had great periods against minichalk i mean they've they've been in position to win two of these three games that they've had against them so far including a lead with less than three minutes to go um the important thing is if they can just maintain that momentum out of a first a strong first period if they're able to you know come out of the first period with the leader tied they ought to be able to carry that in the final 30 minutes of the game and you know they've proven they can hang with them and that's the important thing you got to be able to hang with these good teams they can hang with them at least in the start of the game maybe they can finally pull off the upset they've been trying to pull that's been three games in the making yeah and colin sherwood's gonna have to play his best game of the season heading into miniature you know he's been solid all season but tomorrow is you know it's a big game for him he had 43 saves last night and he had only allowed one goal tonight looking forward to seeing how he plays and spartans are going to have to learn how to contain uh terzi and other guys on that top line noel who had an unbelievable game genovese we're looking forward to it i'll be on the call at 250 alongside a special guest who shall remain nameless so tune in 250 tomorrow looking forward to that one colin final thoughts big big win for the spartans back in the winter yeah yep the first time they've been back in the win column since the opening game had to face some really tough opponents you know ludlow of course being envisioned lower than them i mean correct the level they fought the whole game but that third period i think was really a strong period from from the lions i think it's something they can take in their final few games of the season but as far as spartans go it's a much needed victory see if they take some momentum off it against the team they've seen a lot of in miniature tomorrow afternoon coach reid spartans pull out the win 6-1 final from olympia eye center and we'll recap the goals one last time dolbeck with one two for fisher one for nero one for cune and i came of course um so on behalf of all of us jamie behind the camera colin casey and myself devin dope the voice of the spartans thank you for tuning in to spartans hockey on elcap we'll see you tomorrow 250.

for the student of the month uh students i wanted to congratulate them for their hard work and earning student of the month i did want to thank any staff or faculty members that have received the gem awards we certainly appreciate all the hard work and dedication to the students and community of bound brook um i am glad to see that sports and clubs are still continuing um i wanted to give a thank you to stacey young for the donation of the books uh that she gave to the seventh through twelfth grade and then a shout out to soul for soul for 150 pairs of sneakers that's awesome as well and i also continue to thank those people that are collecting uh and distributing food not only to our students but to the community at large so thank you for your continued service that's it all right well on that note before i uh turned it over to the principles um i'd like to make mention that costco here in bridgewater donated a huge sum of food for us for our food bank for this week so i'd like to thank costco and this is ryan and mrs fisher for coordinating that taking care of that um obviously this weekend um we had some some covert issues in the district i'd like to especially thank um all the district nurses for going above and beyond this weekend getting on the phone doing the contact tracing um it was very uh very appreciated that the nurses took some time um this weekend to help us out with the contract tracing making sure we got everything done appropriately in the right way along with the principles so we had a busy weekend um trying to do all the contact racing that we had to do this this past weekend and um i just wanted to thank all of them especially for going above and beyond this weekend and then of course um i did send that an email out to the staff this week or today actually letting them know that they've performed magnificently it's been almost a year since we went out um on this uh pandemic so you know with all the the different things that we've had to do being completely verbal to hybrid and back and forth you know they've handled everything very very well and gracefully throughout this time so i wanted to thank them i also um gave them a little bit of information which i will now share with the board um we got a memo on friday about the er esther two funds which is the second set of care funds um we are slated to get about 2.5 million in the second round of care funds which is a good amount of money for for us in the district additionally um some insider information that i received today um you can anticipate some very very good news tomorrow from the governor in terms of state e for bound brook so um from what i understand he is going to fully fund s to a year four level which is uh more than anticipated so if that does happen um again we are we're in pretty good shape so just wanted to put that out there and then obviously um there are two grants that they put out there one is for um learning loss and one is for mental health and we will be applying for both of those grants for the district for those funds so hopefully we can receive some more money to help help our kids with learning loss and mental health needs so with that now we're going to turn it over to our principles we're going to start with lamont annex and dr s for students of the month and now we're going to swing over to mrs clark over at lafayette school do we have anything for them what grade are you in we do have a fourth grade student from somali here in the audience so we're gonna go to to mr edwards now to do his uh students of the month good resources for the classroom this way and for lafayette school mrs lafayette's gem clark the month of february is heather woods um as educators i think we can only reflect on trying our hardest to reach all the students even some of the challenging ones um and it does sometimes become exhausting during a regular year um and even more so during challenging times like this heather woods has remained calm and kind um and really has just gone above and beyond for her students and i appreciate all that you have done so thank you heather and we're going to go to mr edwards for smalling school good evening again miss bell is one of our sixth grade teachers at smalley school a professional educator who continues to help her students colleagues and community this bell is a very caring sincere patient and a team player day in and day out she strives to help her students not just academically but she also tries to bring out their social emotional personalities in the classroom she's part of a hard-working and dedicated sixth grade team she is continuing to grow as an educator having attended professional development seminars in the summer currently she is enrolled obtaining her master's degree this month's gem award is presented to miss jamie bell congratulations [Applause] now we'll move over to community middle school and mr santa clara hello everyone once again uh the community middle school is proud to recognize mr lay as its gem award recipient for the month of february when we think back over this past month uh my most vented memory is snow and more snow so tonight's weather is just another example of how we're all kind of hoping for an early spring about one month ago when the weather turned uh temperatures dropped into the teens and unlike most years when you know we would typically bring our students into the gymnasium for arrival until the arrival bell rang this year we're kind of guided by coded protocols and temperature checks and so forth so students have to stay outside and if we're lined up and we process them as quickly as we can but on january 28th mr lay was out of store and he noticed that the store was selling a large quantity of mint mittens and hats uh the coldest day of the year was coming that very next morning temperatures dropped pretty quickly mr lake decided at that moment to buy over 100 pairs of mittens and hats for the kids at cms the next morning mr lake solicited the help of mrs kradatas mrs darwin mr fisher and mrs dubio and they began handing out these mittens and hand packs to all the kids who are standing in line at arrival uh it wasn't the fact whether that many students if they did or did not own you know hats and gloves but for anyone who the parent of a middle school student they know that uh but that morning i can assure you there were a few students that refused this gift from mr light it's this level of caring that prompted teachers at the community middle school last year to nominate mr light as the 2020 teacher of the year so on behalf of all of our students our parents our staff i'd like to thank mr lakewood's generosity but more importantly for his constant dedication and this is sincere love for being a teacher and for going the extra mile for our students thank you and now we'll move on over to bamboo high school and mr smith hello again uh we would like to congratulate miss courtney namarovsky for being named high school gem award uh miss nemo as the kids call her is a time compassionate and persevering teacher despite the challenging circumstances of this year she has built a warm classroom environment for both virtual and in-person students miss nemo is not only able to successfully engage students in academic conversations but she also maintains strong personal connections with her students her creativity and empathy are the mark of an exemplary professional beyond our effective classroom practices ms nema is a valuable member of the bbhs staff she contributes to a supportive environment by taking numerous teachers under her wing she has impacted them as well as student teachers crazily as they navigate their early teaching years she provides sound expertise and advice from her own experience furthermore miss nemo goes above and beyond for her students not only does she care about uh her students grades and academic success she also cares deeply about their mental emotional and physical well-being students are constantly talking about how much they love her because she treats them as people not just students and she's always looking out and is always there for them at times like these teachers like ms demarovsky are essential to his school building she truly wants to see all teachers and students succeed and we are lucky to have her as part of our team for all of these reasons we congratulate ms lima [Applause] and the general award for the district is going to go out to mike for the palti this month um this past weekend we had some server issues and uh mike along with the rest of the technology team spent the entire weekend here working very very hard long hours make sure that the district continued to run and operate um without without them and uh mike who's a former former student here um you know he graduated while i was principal here uh never really left he stayed here he continues to work here um he's a college graduate he works really hard for us and he he goes well above and beyond all the time anytime we ask ask him to he's more than deserving of this award and uh again uh mike fitzpaul he's in the district the gym award recipient for the month of february thanks mike all right so at this point huh i'll do that um at this point in time tony are you ready for your report i'm going to turn it over to tony mormont who is going to do our ssds hiv presentation for the reporting period number one bad tone how was the presentation do you want to make him the presenter so he could share a screen uh yeah i can i'm going to allow you to share yes all right okay so the pandemic had a significant impact on hiv the first reporting period september through december in harassment intimidation and bullying the numbers were decreased significantly um you see the investigations are set up and district-wide confirmed they are two events they have a great deal from the first period of last year uh and i know from talking to my uh guidance director colleagues from other county schools that this is not just the case at november is we had three hiv investigations and one day from the case of hiv uh at the middle school it was general investigations and just zero confirmed no confirmed cases smalling two investigations and just one confirmed case and then zero investigations and confirmed cases district-wide we have no incidents to report from our high school the only school that we had incidents to report were at community schools and no other incidents and violence okay that's it for for my completion all right does anybody have any questions that is the bare bones we've ever ever seen thank you can you share your screen back to me you've done a great job okay um that is it for my report on committee meetings we've got a policy meeting tonight we went through some policy updates that will be on our next agenda um i would say the biggest biggest change on the policies is the abolishment of the four current fmla policies we have and they're kind of being condensed into one coherent fmla policy so i would say that's the biggest change worth coming in the policies does anybody else want to chime in on policy or okay uh with that we are open to the public for agenda items only i can see that nothing's changed over the years well i think we did have there were there were definitely one people out there it was oh yeah do you want to shut this so they can't read the comments advanced boss um sure okay there we go all right so we have nothing online for agenda items and nobody here so you are up to approval of minutes all right i need a motion to approve the minutes of 228 2021 motion mr uh thomas ellie second does anyone have any questions or comments does anyone need to abstain will we [Music] yes [Music] all right personnel resolutions resolve the superintendent recommends for approval the resolutions is outlined in personnel resolutions under district in high school 6.2 through 6.4 can i get a motion mr tong sally second second mr ball any questions i'm glad to see robotics moving forward hearing no questions may i get a roll call yes [Music] yes miss martinez yes yes yes the stevens yes this is resolutions under middle and elementary schools seven point two through seven point four can i get a motion motion it's mars second mr thomas ellie any questions hearing none can i get a vocal ball yes martinez yes yes stevens yeah ms rosa yes eight finance resolutions resolve the boundary board of education approves the resolutions as outlined in financial resolutions eight point two to eight point five can i get a promotion mr battalian any questions once again thank you to the donations uh that's awesome hearing no other questions or comments may i get a roll call yes mrs martinez yes morris yes stevens yes ms rosamano yes mr thomas ellie yes yes which is upcoming yes yes does anyone have any other matters they'd like to bring before the board yes mr thomas so today the state passed its new rules on uh marijuana have we revisited as a board for we have policies um we just went through them to see okay because they get a warning now same thing with underage drinking yes we went through them okay so they get a warning before they get in trouble they don't get in trouble and so they can they can openly smoke and drink underage and the cops that police officers cannot pull them over or stop them because of no longer because if they smell marijuana and if they do happen to come you've got to read into it they get a warning a written warning and the second one they get a more verbal warning and the third one they get even more verbal yeah i i understand that that may be the legal side but from from a school perspective right our policies are going to stay in place for now okay good any other comments or all right um is there is there anything from the public for the questions in general we have five comments so the first one is jackie beers teacher at the attic hello i'm writing to ask the board to consider allowing staff to work virtually from home if they are healthy but under quarantine due to coving currently stats that must quarantine are considered healthy but must use their obscenities for the entire length of the quarantine classroom teachers can teach to their virtual students while a substitute teacher teaches the in-person students subsidy teachers are called in regardless so this is not an extra cost to the district support staff to continue to service all students virtually therefore staying within compliance special education ieps this would be a great benefit for all students to continue receiving instruction from their teachers staff members teaching assistants consistency is important to all students thank you for your time can i just ask question concern i know it came up prior um if someone is in high school i know if they don't have a another teacher there they still fall in a substitute there are still kids that are virtual to that aren't they yes so couldn't we do that for all levels then i mean i understand that we can't provide for one level without providing the same for the other right but that's that's a that is a long time that's ten days is there it's less usually all right but still it could be five to eight days of sick time if we can provide that type of accommodation across the board from kindergarten up to i think that's more of a legal question is there any legal reason why we couldn't have every teacher that they're quarantining and service the virtual students that handle this and then substitute teacher that comes in to cover whoever's here can can you do that well i've got from a legal standpoint uh there's works best for you if all the all the physicians can do their job uh remotely because i mean here's the thing the whole class is quarantined right no in this the situation she's bringing [Music] that up we had said that because they because that the high school was a different thing we need to make sure we keep it all equitable is there is there why can't we do that in high school then too like if you're a high school teacher and you have to bring in a substitute anyway because their kids now coming back to school why can't then the person who's at home still teach virtually to the kids from wherever they're at and the person who's in school just has to worry about the kids that are in the classroom again i think the situation is that teacher would also have to teach the kids in the classroom well [Applause] that teacher still has to teach all the kids which teacher the one that's at home if you're saying that they you're not allowing them to work from home then who's teaching them that substitute so that's what they're saying like so you're bringing a substitute either way that's right you're just gonna bring us at the lower level we're not bringing in a substitute they're all co-teaching taking care of those virtual kids and just those virtual kids i thought that was the point of the quotation that if we had to do that that was possible again that's what we had hoped to do and then it became a legal question because they did away with the um the leave in december right but i'm saying like if instead of making them take a sick day let them work with them work with the kids that are on the you know on the birthdays but i think what i think what like dan is saying is that if you have kids so he so the person can only teach the virtual kids then so the virtual kids will get a full class and then the people who go in person that are just gonna have a sub give them notes is what he's trying to say where the whole class isn't getting taught only one group is or not the other but i think that if the teacher if the teacher is online and that the substitute would be able to access whatever the elementary of the code is other teachers to be in those rooms is there is there a mechanism to allow because because then students can just sign on to their device sitting in a classroom and take the lesson virtually like everybody else that person is being paid either way whether it's a coverage a sub or whatever if somebody's being paid to be there why not let their real teacher yeah right that's what we're saying i kind of think that that makes sense i the only thing that i would i'm not i'm just playing my double kid you just need someone like someone just need to log on i'm like i don't know how every every kid comes with their device so they're going to call she's saying not even just log on to them no they're just going to go onto their google me from the classroom and then the teacher can just like as if they were virtual from home but they're not they only have to go virtual for that one particular period is that teachers i i think i think we should consider it because you know that's that's a you know to no fault of their own they are being forced really to quantity right because like sometimes it is a fault you know every situation is different we don't know that right i mean i'm on your side but i'm just saying sometimes it is their fault sometimes right we can't make that difference my idiot brother you know was sick and he said and he came over anyway and i was like oh thanks and i had to quarantine for two weeks right and now he didn't have a copy but he was sick and i was like thanks dude now i got two two weeks right and you know and you can't differentiate between i went to you know cozumel and went out you know you know to the disco um so right so so we can't do that but i do think it makes sense the problem is you're not gonna be able to differentiate between the two i don't want to okay i would rather i'd rather than for the kids for the teachers to add a benefit for them don't use your sick days that's great but as far as the kids getting the consistency of having a teacher to me that's preferable i would rather than have that than 10 days of a sub who were paying anyway right supervising the classroom with busy work if the teacher wants to do it and then they're saying i'm home and please let me tell you if they're like i want to do this when this is all said and done we don't as a district we need to look at and again sick days do come into play i mean if you're if you're just at home and if you have the ability to um to present a lesson and without any legal ramifications of this i i mean because you're talking about that people are going to be wiped out a sick time of something that it's not there we can't differentiate if it's their fault not their focus we don't know and there's hippo laws against that but the thing being is that uh i mean i think it's something to at least to look into and maybe get some some legal counsel on it and and to take a hard look at it but i think that it's a compassionate look towards you know i mean i don't know i think i mean i think there probably is but i know other districts so they right i mean every school district is different but i'm saying if we have like i said if if if the kids because we we have the technology you know from day one it was one of the best things about this district ever we have a one-to-one technology for every student they are expected to bring that technology to school every single day then if they're you know classroom teachers not there they can sign on to a google meet as if they are because i mean we're obviously saying they have a capability because on virtual days you've sundays they're home doing it so they obviously can do it that's not the issue don't misunderstand what i'm telling we completely have the capability of having a teacher teach from home to kids in the classroom we have that capability what i'm saying is there's a lot of unintended consequences along with it and you need to think it all the way through well i just still think that the policy that we have of because we talked about putting in place that if people went out if and here comes this because we did put a policy class if a teacher decided to go travel and they and they went out of the country that would not be covered by a quarantine because we already put a policy in place saying okay if you're going to choose to make that choice you need to you know going ahead of time that you're going to have a two-week quarantine that's different than you know you know whatever i was in a classroom and and someone might have you know had code doctors note that saying you have to you you're quarantining under doctor's orders is that the difference or are you saying because the district is making me quarantined then you can do this i if you're saying if the district is making you a quarantine you can do this i can live with that a whole lot easier than you just yes then somebody from the outside coming in and saying i have to quarantine for whatever reason well i think if we're telling them that they have the foreign team then yes it makes total sense and then everything else is on a case-by-case basis right now that makes sense to me to me that that has made sense from day one and it again and that's not right no because again i'm gonna go back to when they when when that law dropped at the end of december we lost that ability of everybody being able to use that that time so then comes into comes into play the arbitrary and capricious reasons of me doing this for this person not for that person and so on and so forth again i have no problem helping anybody i i know in new york as far as quarantining if the school quarantines you you can work from home with your kids or you can work virtually um there is a limit to like if you have to quarantine for outside reasons and you're calling them and say listen i got exposed i was at a family occasion when i got exposed they they are they are forced they think they can get paid i think it's up to i think it's 10 days total but if you do that like after that you know you're on your own so like we can set like okay if that happens you know we'll cover the first five days but then that's like a hard limit if it's like outside reasons i don't know i mean well the problem you're going to have is a couple things one is you know to the extent you open that door you're opening that door and you want to be careful not to lose your discretion there may not be there may be situations where it's not appropriate for the staff members it just doesn't work but if you open that door then you're running that risk that everybody's going to say they're entitled to it the other part of that is the how you treat different situations potentially could be a negotiable subject so you've got to be careful with that if you're going to set a policy is that something we can then sit down with well mr paxton i sit down i've asked for a meeting with mr paxton this entrepreneur uh a separate issue which you know about so i can always approach this subject with them when i have a conversation with them during the week right because if we can get into a sidebar kind of negotiation like we did with them being able to leave but but like definitely set limits because you don't want someone saying oh yeah i was exposed you know my friend might have been sick and i'm going to foreign if it's if i'm in the unfortunate position which as of the last 10 days i'm in the unfortunate position of telling people they have to stay home then that should be definitely covered to me that should be covered that means i used to have that that that ability to say yeah i'd rather store it there and say okay so they can teach them how to conversation so does that cover miss beers miss pierce i don't think is is uh she's not she's not would that have covered the last person who has she can't be careful about music has there been anyone else that has been forced to quarantine and not been able to do that because then we would have to make sure that if we're going to do that we wouldn't store their same time you have a number of people okay so then that's that's something we have to look at as well yeah you have a number of people okay but i do think if your school tells you you can't come to work again i also again here here's the unintended consequence i'll just give you an example this is just an example let's use the child study team where you need to be with a kid to do what you need to do but now you're not here yes and no um listen is it the optimal thing to do to do a one-on-one conversation with with a student but here's some of the tests if you're not here you can't who's pulling the kid and some of the tests that they do have to do [Music] with the evaluations [Music] so you have to take a look at my school psychologist or learning consultant that that's all one-on-one and if it's in the iep that a child needs three sessions of vote a day by week or two sessions of speech then you're getting into i think you're opening up you've got to be very careful of opening up that pandora's box but i still think that if if you are forcing someone on a school-based support team to quarantine you as a school district or sending them out then there are six times should be covered yes whether they can reach that child or not yes i i hear it i'm just saying i think that it's where the differentiation [Music] so i mean so they're still doing an aspect of their job from home so i think that they they would fall into that same category all right i'm i'm gonna take this question so let me see if i understand this so you have a we have a hybrid is the teacher goes in she teaches or he teaches the children that are in the class and then they're also broadcasting and teaching the kids that are wrong okay so if we're how could a teacher teach the children because they have a device they'll sign on right but they can't teach the children in the classroom so we're going to pay for a substitute to just sit there and press the button that substitutes being paid for either way though but so we're going to pay for a substitute to come in but not teach well no they should be assisting in advice if i had a substitute for a child in my child's classroom 10 days and i have the real teacher on on virtual i'm not my kid's gonna stay at home and go virtual yeah it's just one class out of five okay one it's only one period elementary then i guess that's true if it's the elementary they'll probably they'll have their co-teacher in the classroom right and the other level then yeah then a parent could it but it would be just that one class for the day out of you know one period as opposed to an entire day i still think i mean at the high school level a sub is just telling the kids this is what your teacher assigned and they're doing it anyway right now there's not a there's not teaching yeah so i would rather have the high school teacher or middle school teacher teach the lesson well actually and again i think even at the high school level if i'm sending a teacher home that teacher could still teach from home if i'm sending the teacher home right so again to me if it's me sending them home it's still a fair thing right again but let me let me work this let me work this out all right can i move on yep all right so our next one is from steve nowitzki also a teacher 83 first street middletown new jersey garrett bamboo board of education members i feel the need to voice my concern about the situation here at the middle school and in the last few weeks i have had to do the contact tracing forum um this was due to the fact that a student in two separate classrooms had situations with covert 19 environments upon hearing that the teacher and the class of students now have to quarantine i wonder what when my time will come we try to follow all the safety procedures in the school and this is has greatly impacted the way i teach my class now with the incident of students being in contact with people who have tested positive i am no longer walking up and down the eyes i stay in front of the class trying to help virtual students and in the class in class students at the same time this is a daunting task uh sometimes i have four questions on go guardian chat and possibly two or three on google meet chat and students from questions from students in the class sometimes i am not able to concentrate on the in-person and virtual students at the same time even though we are trying to do our best with student safety at social distancing school we know that we cannot control what happens when they leave the building i understand the hardship of families having their children in a virtual class environment but i do i believe the teachers would be able to provide a more coherent lesson if they did not have to go between virtual and in-person students having students at home would be safer environment for them and also for the faculty administration and support staff thank you for taking the time to read my letter i know this is a difficult time for everyone i think i mean if you look nationally they are the cdc has said that that schools are not yes there are people are quarantining but it's not because they got coveted while coming to work and i listen it's it is an imperfect situation i can understand anyone's concern um i think that you know it does change our teaching practices um they're not optimal whether you're in the classroom or out of the classroom because it's not a normal school year um but i don't think in good conscience at this time we could would i would ever entertain closing down right now we don't have any transmission that we know of that happened because they came to work so at this time i think yes is it the safest but it's not the best thing for the parents or the kids but also didn't uh phil murphy said when if something gets passed for reopening right i mean right we were told that if we could meet a certain set of criteria that deemed our schools following be able to follow a certain set policy we were able to open it from the very beginning we were able to do that provide that and nothing has changed about that so we have to follow it and and keep going i don't think that anyone would argue the statement that this is difficult and not ideal it's terrible we totally agree that hybrid is awful and difficult but this is where we are unfortunately it's terrible we agree i'm sorry that we have to go through it yes i'll be starting next week i cannot wait question sure sure um so in response to mr nowicky situation which everyone is sharing honestly um is okay so i mean is there anything we can do to support these teachers that are struggling even if it's a temporary thing to alleviate that because i know exactly what he's referring to about having the poor email questions and then three in-person questions [Music] i i don't i don't see that as a possibility at the moment unfortunately i just i don't see how we can do it i'm sure he's doing his best yeah i mean i think we're all doing our best like i said you know at the onset of this you know i think our teachers have performed magnificently throughout all of this and they're doing the best they can with what we have and what's going on um i think everybody has i mean from the principals to the nurses to everybody um again i i wish there's more we could do to to help people right now um with some of these things but i i just i just don't i don't i don't have it if i had it i would do it something i would say that someone said to me as a teacher is i think as a board we do not expect you to have the same year that you had last year our expectations are not the same as they've always been in the past we know that you're struggling we know that this is not easy for you and and we acknowledge that and we thank you for doing the best that you can all we're asking is try to do the best you can we completely understand that it's impossible we know so i'm saying give yourself a break too you know you're doing you're doing a good job i've talked myself off of a lot of the legends um middle school teach 23 ducati avenue over the past week or so we've noticed a spike in in-person students either quarantine or themselves possible cases in early january received notice from the district with exact numbers of staff of students quarantine and those who have test deposited the email the level of transparency was greatly appreciated but has since not been happening uh being in the building the last few weeks i have seen the number of students coming in and out due to quarantine rise and it puts everyone on edge uh it would be it would put put us at ease to at least have a district level head count to watch the rising fall of the town numbers it seems that our numbers are a lot higher than then that of november when we took a few weeks to quarantine the district we never got a number that would warrant a district-wide quarantine but if we had uh the email update we then could keep track of when it's approaching that time i asked to bring back the weekly email update so we can state well-informed parents and staff did i get wiggly can we do that um i've been doing the um the letters um again it it's catch 22 for me because i was doing doing the numbers and if you recall that wasn't good enough because they wanted um the actual building and who and all that stuff so i went to the went to the letter and every time there's there's uh an issue i send out the letter now so i'm sending out individual letters versus the weekly so um i'm sending up letters now so again i'm in the catch 22 of the first thing wasn't good enough so i switched to the second thing and now the second thing is not good enough so can we have a combination of those two like at the end of the week i mean i don't i don't know if it really matters i think the issue is they want all this information that we can't give them and they still expect us to get because like i know people like i bet people are like oh where did this happen or who like yeah there's hippolog that prevents us from again releasing certain information that i know again can't say who had it there's no names attached or classroom and again we're now we're trying to compare numbers from november to now and things like that which really don't which aren't applicable right now yeah so again it's just not comparing apple's tab all right next question [Music] yes no yeah yeah okay um alexandria darwin another teacher uh 114 apartment corner road washington new jersey good evening to all the board of education members my students have always meant the world to me and they will always continue to their well-being their mental health and overall happiness to me the social emotional well-being is always with their knowledge of reading and writing there is nothing more that i wish than for the school to return to normal what i would give to be loving 100 composition books home to read their daily journal journal writing or circling around the room watching my students read sit close together in small group within the classroom i would be elated when we are able to safely do these things those activities again however i can honestly say i personally am mentally exhausted from worrying about bringing coke home to my own style i know we are all doing the absolute best we can and it truly must not be easy an easy decision to make but i ask that the district consider virtual learning even if it's for a short time until positive copic cases quarantining due to possible exposures at the middle should subside again thank you for all your extensive efforts and devotion during this time especially so let me ask you the procedures that we have in places when we get notification of whoever it is whether it's an adult or a child then then you go about where was that child and where were they we do all the contact right so i mean listen i i get being nervous but like i said we have those you know that procedure in place as long as we're following procedures and that's what the cdc is telling us that we should be doing i i i once again i'm sorry that they feel that way yeah and and again i think right now i think the problem that people are seeing is there have been several group exposures so large group exposures drive your numbers up very quickly it doesn't mean that everybody has coca means you have high quarantine numbers because they were exposed in a group nothing to do about it you know just my two cents for them hearing also is a lot of and i've always said this even when i was on the board last time there's facts versus fear and a lot of this is also teacher burnout yes my question is any professional development days that are upcoming just uh to kick it around just a suggestion is there anything that can be done and it doesn't have to be done now but maybe thinking in the future for uh just some distressing uh sort of mental health activities for the teachings just to get them in a better because uh i'm not saying therapy or anything like that i'm just saying just that instead of you know going on an academic stance just to kind of take a step back and and i think they i think collectively they're doing such an incredible job but also they're human and i think what we're seeing is we're seeing people just you know people are breaking down and i think they have a responsibility to a point within a reason just to maybe kind of uh alleviate you know put something in place or at least if not have some resources or strategies available to them that's just me just just to think about that because i mean um you know it is and it's not just staff it's administration and it's it's the counselors it's everyone i mean we're all going through this together but you know we got to give ourselves a break too i mean you know just to kind of take a step back i didn't know dr gallagher that's something that the administration maybe even a five-minute slot presentation slide when they're doing something i don't know we've done extensive mental health work with our staff we don't have any more pvds left um we do have a couple more things left to do with my time and we're working a few things out that are going to be staff based so they will be coming out shortly next um but again um you know we're into that we're into the depths of winter and i know and here and everything is possible okay the next one is from del ponte from the high school please let mr thomason know that mrs delta is still attending all board of education at this time she apologizes that there is no one in the audience but she is here online good for you [Music] to the surprise of noah lauren patterson uh thank you for discussing allowing the quarantine teachers to teach virtually and not burn their personal days it is not fair for not fair to a teacher when they have to quarantine because the parent says child into school with symptoms these teachers were able to teach from home when they when we were virtual uh please include every person and not just a classroom teacher yeah to be discussed if we're going to force someone to quantity because someone came to school sick and we're telling they have to quarantine it's only right then we should cover their sick days okay uh the next one is from mr paxson the law says the district can allow people to work virtually many districts allow people to work from home when the district makes them quarantine i definitely will have a conversation regarding this matter with my meeting with dr gallagher and the last one is from i'm assuming is kelly hellman but i think she misspelled her last name smelly teacher i would like to thank the board for their supporting words tonight i'm excited to be back in the classroom and have most of my roster back in person i can echo this annuity in the sense that i cannot run my class the same way especially after this weekend i feel the need to voice my concern over busing i have two students who take a district bus one has to quarantine the other one is allowed back in the classroom while i appreciate the efforts of the nurses for contact tracing unsettling because the size of the bus and ventilation on the bus while i understand we have no control over private bus privately contracted buses there are also in the same situation while some students have quarantined based on proximity on a bus and some are allowed back into school thank you for your time and stay healthy again contact crazy there's rules to that so many feet so many minutes of contact listen i don't think anyone's not on edge when they are forced to be in a large group of people that you can't guarantee are following the rules like you are there's since september it's it will be until until this is gone i mean it'll it's just always going to be that way but you know like i said there's policies and procedures in place and that's what we have to continue to follow and it is exhausting yeah um you know being on the phone with taryn for endless hours on the weekend and she's on the phone for endless hours with [Music] nurses you know you're going through a list of questions and you're relying on the answers that you're getting right so you know right it's it's not not an easy proposition at all all right no more questions we're good we no of education the approval of the resolutions is outlined in the approval of the cases under middle and elementary school 12.2 can i get a motion question mr thomas sally can i get a second second mr zumko um fall in oh

followup to your questions or concerns will be addressed by Administration through the contact information provided on the comment card thank you Melanie mallister dear Board of Education thank you for taking the time to read my comments I appreciate all your hard work during this difficult school year we need to return to a normal full-time 5-day a week schedule of in-person instruction due to the shortened school days my child is getting less speech therapy than he is entitled to under his IEP and he is not the only child with an IEP not getting the allotted hours for school related services this makes me feel upset for my child and all the IEP kids it's not fair to them at all I believe for the Children's Mental Health social skills and academic learning the kids need a full day of school the students could easily eat lunch in the classroom or other school districts in the in this area have returned to full-time school days with success also we need to have all of the extracurricular activities available as well those provide a much needed outlet for children's physical and mental health as soon as my child is back on with remote learning in the afternoon or on Wednesdays his anxiety returns I see two happy children on the days that they receive in-person instruction in the morning and my second grader is motivated to learn and my fourth grade child with an IEP is not anxious thank you Jessica guado tonight I wanted to bring attention to the board about my concerns for the seemingly quick phase transitions we've had as a district recently judging by the heavy push to move along these phases I assume the district will want to move everyone back into in-person school by the end of the year as a current student at asigo East my concerns include whether I will still have the choice to remain remote past Phase 2 as well as be able to continue to preserve the safety of my family I personally think that shoveling shoving all students in teachers back into school could be one of the worst decisions the district could make at this time for me my parents and close family don't have the vaccine accessible to them at this time I know others who live with grandparents or young children in their household who also don't have accessibility to the vaccine or choose not to receive it I don't feel comfortable going into schools surrounded by hundreds of other students during this time some of which I know personally have gotten the Corona virus in order to preserve the safety of my family I have been doing remote school from home while still maintaining good grades I should continue to have that choice to do school remotely during this time as these said phases progress my question to the board is as the district gets to make decisions for us students we are obligated to follow how is the district going to handle the situation of someone's close family member passing because a student got sick at school and brought it home to their family how is that situation going to be handled knowing that there was such a fast transitional push to get everyone back in school and it could have been prevented for me I care about the safety of myself and my own family this is not about what students teachers or faculty want it's about the health and safety of my loved ones and countless others item 5.1 board member comments anybody want to begin or should we just go through nothing from Ruth Heather no Ally Brent Tony yeah um just I want to say that I think we do need to clarify that you know we so far I think have um balanced the needs of people who are at home with people who want to go back to school full-time and that it continues to be a board priority to balance those things based on facts based on information based on clear thinking and you know big picture thinking I think um I know that some people in the community don't think we're doing it well but that is not something that we can do anything about so what we have to do is make sure that we continue to you know balance all these this information and balance um the things that we need to do overall as a district so I just wanted to say that and then I wanted to say too that sadly it's come to my attention that some teachers are finding negativity online in such a way that in an already painful environment they're having to listen to people be hard on them and in some cases that might be warranted maybe somebody made a mistake maybe somebody did something but I would urge all the parents out there that listen to board meetings to think about whether you think you're really helping your student your family the school district teacher situation by doing that kind of behavior because to me it's a shame that people act like that in a time when it's already very hard on people that are already very stressed out trying to do the best they can um and I I would hope that if you have a problem you would do what any decent person would do which was go talk to the person that you're having the problem with and try to work it out on a personal level instead of doing it online Matt no thank you I also have nothing to add item 5.2 board committee reports finance and Facilities it's all you Brett thanks Ruth all right so uh Finance uh facilities committee met on uh Thursday of last week um different day for us but the reason was that um Christie was able to coordinate uh for four government bodies um to send representatives for us to have discussions or deeper discussion about developer fees and we were commenting about how it was a year ago to almost the day that chrisy had originally sent out the email requesting it that we were actually finally in the room discussing and the conversation that we had was very different than what we were planning a year ago and I think Ruth and I talked after the meeting I think it was probably one of the best finance and facility committee meetings we've had in quite some time um we were able to get insights and feedback from um these the other government agencies about how they set their fees what resources they are using what type of development they see happening within their areas and what their priorities are around those developing uh developments right Aurora has very different goals than the village of asigo uh Kendall County the unincorporated areas are obviously operate very differently than than the village of oigo um and and planfield has slightly different uh goals and initiatives as well so to to summize that we we got a lot of good information we provided some historical they provided us with some historical data and we talked uh for a bit about a concept when I'm going to share with you guys now um which is back in 2001 correct yep the school district our school district paid for um University of Northern Illinois to conduct a study on current rates land values these type of things and we we've we've learned and understand that at least the city of Aurora has in the past used that information for themselves and we kind of present we didn't get a whole lot of feedback uh immediately and that's understandable because they were hearing things for the first time but the concept would be if if we the school district were to be willing to conduct another study that we could then share it with these government bodies possibly they might be willing to help us defer the cost and the end value is is that we would not have uh Village a competing against Village B with developers because the fees are different rather we could have a conversation where these entities could have rates and fees established for their property that exists within the 308 district and and I I think and I'll let Ruth comment but I think that is almost a win win right we as a school district are able to be part of the conversation with these organizations about what their fees are we're helping to provide real data that is defensible um as entities would change or adjust any of the fees that they have available and it would send a clear message to developers that we do indeed want to work with everybody we're happy to have development within the school district District um we're not anti-development in any way um we just need to be smart about um what's being developed and that we understand um what's coming and how that impacts us financially Ruth you want to add to that yeah I I think it was very interesting to know that these entities do use those numbers that are 20 years old and one of them had even said that they use data from I think 1996 um so I also appreciated the feedback that we received from them that what they hear from developers is the reason they want to develop in this area is because of the schools so I know that we as board members tend to hear a lot of negative comments um and they said they hear the exact opposite from from people looking to move into the area specifically because we have such great schools um and I agree it was it was a great meeting it was nice that everyone was there and participating and sharing information and providing feedback and definitely appreciated that there was interest in working together so that was great yep so our our next steps are Christie has already initiated reaching out to NIU uh to see if it's a possibility to do another study and what the cost would be of that once we have that information then we'll be able to move on to the next phase would be revisiting um our thoughts and ideas with these government entities see if there's any interest in in helping us cover some of the costs and then of course the board will have to make the decision on whether or not we're willing to to pay for the study any questions no but add I think um Dr sparland we have begun inviting some of those same individuals to come present to us as a board as well correct Mr Danto will be here on March 15th M how is that different from the RSP Ellie can you say what RSP stands for no no okay so I can explain it the the you know the big study that we had the demographer study well yeah the the RSP it's it's a demography study so it's based on projected future student enrollment this study is based on what is the value of land what's the value of new development and when a single family house gets built what how many children is that unit going to potentially send to the district so Apartments single family homes multif family townhouse EXA Etc and so so that data that's in this report can be used to help establish or update land cash fees and impact fees so some of it overlaps no the RSP predicted how many kids we were going to get right but this study predict uh tells us how much money we should be expecting to collect okay in in fees so Brent Lori said no questions but I do have a question which is um does this combat the issue when we've had development in the past and other Villages or towns underbid the fees and then asigo can't even compete with that well that that was one of my points and and I think that's that's the case look we as we've all discussed we can't force a government entity to charge a certain rate or to charge it all um but I think again if we are collectively speaking with them and trying to get them to understand it is in their advantage to have rates that are similar with their neighbors right so that they're not competing against each other does that I was trying to figure out how what angle it how it would work to create a better situation for as Wego in particular right so for example right now the city of Aurora does not have impact fees mhm right so if a developer is trying to decide between the village of asigo and Aurora um that might influence their decision and I I think we'd we'd rather have a Level Playing Field yeah I'd rather have a Level Playing Field I'm just having a hard time seeing the motivation for Aurora to behave in a different way that's what's hard for me is to know you know I you know I Morin I don't know if you have comments or or chrisy as well but I you know I I think having discussions and providing some information is a value to all of these government uh entities versus them um setting fees and not having a legal defensible reason for those fees and that's what this study could help accomplish okay am I okay thank you it makes them make the fees make sense y y or helps them because if if you're a city or a village or a Township what you don't want to do is you don't want to get sued by a developer who says that your your fees are incompatible right and if they have the evidence of a recent study by a third party that there's the motivation that's admissible in court as we set our fees based on this study okay that makes more sense right there what you just said okay versus we set our fees based on a study done in 1996 yeah right so just to move forward with our committee reports um thank you for that update um let's move to teaching and learning all right we had our teaching and learning committee meeting um on February 17th so just last week um we um the first agenda item um for for discussion was around the um the plan that we'll hear tonight or the presentation that we'll hear tonight um around uh the summer school um some of the summer school planning that's happening um I think it was a really um I think it was really it was really great information um I think the committee members um definitely had a focus on really thinking about so you know the ex um um kind of expanded summer school opportunities that we're going to be able to offer this summer to combat learning loss that we know has happened with with Co um and I think a lot of our committee members were um very interested and focused on um ideas on how to make those summer school opportunities as accessible as possible to students and families who who really need it and knowing that um we um that's going to take a community effort you know it's not just something that the school district can you know pull off on our own it's going to take partnership collaboration and um you know so that we can really take care of these kids that that um have struggled you know the most um during this time so I thought it was a I think it was a really great meeting it was really good information um and and good participation we also talked um fairly briefly uh related uh around the technology you know the the um Chromebook roll out where we're at currently and what um you know our our next steps are and plans are um and you know there I don't think there were a ton of questions related to that but Tony what do you think yeah I think the they were worried about the kids that are vulnerable and they were voicing those concerns on behalf of many different perspectives and different levels High School junior High uh elementary school so it was a good meeting and they're good folk on that committee thank you item 5.3 the superintendence report all right good evening board tonight I have a few items to share with you I'd like to start off by congratulating the bed nark science Bowl team on winning the Regional Championship the team took first place at the Argon Regional Championship which qualifies them to advance to the National Science Bowl in April so a big congratulations goes out to Amy Trumper and all the students who Fitzpatrick Nicholas Alonzo Autumn Bartell Kayla fto Porter lay and Paul ricken so congratulations to each of those students uh last Wednesday I had the yes congratulations that's uh quite the achievement um last Wednesday I had the opportunity to attend the ohos oehs girls uh cross town basketball game it was nice to see the girls take the court again it was very different experience with our athletes and uh wearing masks in the small crowd of 50 that are allowed to attend athletic events OHS won the basketball game in at halftime I had the privilege of awarding the cross town trophy to uh sgo high school and that's the trophy that we usually award at the cross town uh football game and uh the and the uh the annual cross down challenge is sponsored by Allied First Bank uh Allied provided each School a $2,500 per school as well as $10,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors from both high schools and over the past 15 years the bank has given out more than $425,000 in scholarships and donations to students at both high schools so a big thank you to Ken berren at Allied First Bank for their continued support of our students here in District 308 and finally finally Jordan from homestead Elementary Chris mgus Lakewood Creek Elementary King prol asigo High School St Brown from plank Junior High and the following employees were selected as our employees of the month Paige Lee from Hunt Club Elementary and Susan Bliss from Old Post Elementary so congratulations to all of our February Pride winners as well as our you know the students that I just mentioned earlier so how about another round of applause for all of our employees all right thank you that is my report for this evening all right all right item six approval of the consent agenda can I have a motion please I make a motion to approve all items under consent including 6.1 minutes from the Board of Education meeting on February 8th 2021 open and close session and 6.2 to acknowledge the foyer request received by the district second Mrs moer I Mr Lightfoot I Mrs croner I Mr Bowman I Mrs Swanson I Mrs Doyle I miss Morgan I motion passes information item 7.1 is in regards to the driver education V vehicle bid chrisy yes thank you as you know we received three bids with monthly lease payments raing for from $225 to $39 however after several phone conversations about license plates and the extra brakes being in the lowest bidder for the lease Vehicles notified me uh a week ago last Friday that cons after Consulting with their finance department that it was determined that a school district is not eligible for a retail lease the lease that is available to a school district is a municipal lease which comes at a greater cost approximately twice the uh quoted prices that we received on leases and uh the reason for that is the additional liability that comes with um leasing to a school district that's using vehicles for driver education so at that time I reached out to the other two dealers and after an initial response of yes I asked them to also check with their Finance departments and they both ultimately returned with the same response that a municipal lease is our only option so next I checked to see if the dealers would honor their quoted purchase prices uh two did reply yes one submitted a new quote which was slightly higher than their bid about 5500 so uh therefore at this point the board does have two options uh we can reject all bids and move forward with securing quotes with dealers uh without another public bid as Moren has indicated that uh we have met the test of due diligence at this point or to award the bid as a purchase to one of the biders uh the however the the municipal lease excuse me will still be less than what we pay now for the the rental all of these vehicles but not as much of the savings as we initially projected I'm sorry could you repeat that last part so the municipal lease is still less than what we currently pay for the currently we rent the vehicles the municipal lease would still be less than that okay in in your I'm sorry are you done yes okay in in the memo I'm not seeing the new Municipal lease rates so I could compare that right so that's would be the next step if we reject the bids to then go work with the dealers on the municipal lease quotes um the only thing I know is it would be about twice as much as that was their initial quote about twice as much as what you pay what they quoted as far as the retail lease so sorry so they didn't give you an actual number they just said about twice as much yes okay yes once they saw it was so much higher um we kind of stop the process until where we which way we do which direction we go next do we lease them now we rent them we do pay a daily rental da rental okay um I I guess I'm I'm curious um how did we not know until now that we needed a municipal lease the dealers never explained it to us and as as as I said as as they called them their initial response was yes we can do that we can honor that price but when they went back to talk to their Finance people that's when uh when they went to finalize the finance uh the lease payment papers that's when they learned that a municipal lease was the only thing of okay so so two questions and then I'll let someone else talk um a what is our timing like when do we have to make a decision I would bring uh the recommendation if we move to reject it at the March 15 is it the March 15th meeting yes okay um so I I I don't know what others feel I I I I really feel strongly against an outright purchase and an ownership of um an asset that depre depreciates rather quickly and and I would point to our the other well the way that we operate within the district there's a reason why we lease buses and not purchase them um and given the the wear and tear on this type of a vehicle I I think the the last thing we want is a is an is an asset that's owned that we can't necessarily predict future costs I get it long term it may be less but it might not be by the the time we're paying insurance and repairs and all those types of things so if we did move forward with uh rejecting the bids at the next meeting uh as I said we would not have to go out for public bid again I can just individually work with dealers get quotes and bring those to the board on a municipalities what was the savings that you told us last time at the board meeting for the I don't think it was a lot of money it seemed like it was $50,000 or something it was uh $33,000 okay so $33,000 so if we do this Municipal lease we probably won't save 30 $33,000 we'll just be back to where we were will we be spending more we'd probably save I'm guessing around $155,000 okay because it still is very expensive to rent the vehicles okay may I ask would this be a reason that perhaps other dealers had chosen not to bid is because they knew that we couldn't do a retail lease and if we rebid with a municipal lease might we get a wider range of interest that could benefit us is that well likely unlikely what are your thoughts my thoughts are I I wish somebody would have did with the municipal Le because then we would have called them and asked them why the price was so much higher than the others and we would have learned earlier but I I also think that I would specifically contact dealers and get more potentially get more quotes because I'm I'm personally contacting them for so I think if we just went down 34 here and looked at all the dealers and hit you know asked all of them I think we might get more prices quite honestly I'm with Brent and that I would not not at this time be in favor of purchasing because again that's then in four years we're back to needing to purchase again and it seems like maintenance and all those unknowns are not not something we want to get involved in right now and it's not like an asset that we're going to sell who buys a used student driver vehicle I don't even know there even a market for that it seems like who would buy that I don't know well we could take the the extra breakout so that would be I know well I might be a parent who has now two more drivers in my house that extra break maybe would have come in my kids might not have thought it was so handy but I would have liked it a time or two there may be some spouses that also would find that harmful to the status of the relationship right um okay so what you're basically asking us for here just make sure I understand completely is that we move forward nothing to do for us to do tonight right okay so we'll bring it back March 15th to reject the bids and then I'll start contacting dealers the next day may I ask when do our rentals run out on our current driver's ed vehicles and are we reaching a point where we may find a delay in offering that service in class because of this no they we just continue um they just kind of until we turn them in we're just okay so it's it's not it doesn't have an end date openend but it sounds like the sooner we get this taken care of then the sooner we can stop paying that daily rental and that is correct okay so we can we move it to action for tonight to just reject the bid no no can we do it action on the first um we can discuss that um but it'll be that timing issue again with then putting it out in the same month as getting them in because of the same sort of things so it may be that it is preferable to do that for April altogether um it's at this moment I don't know that I have a recommendation on that yet christe the only thing I know is that when I asked about um honoring the purchase price they would honor that March 15th but that's obviously not the way we want to go so um I would say if we start looking at them in getting quotes in March with a an April delivery I think then they can work you know I think that would work fine Okie doie thank you very much all right item 7.2 is to have a conversation with the board on the idea of offering summer school to expand opportunities for our students this summer fa thank you so we have received an additional $495,000 of Title One money this has just come in in the last uh six weeks and has very strict uh guidelines about how it can be used it needs to be used prior to September 1st it cannot be carried over into the next school year usually Title One money travels just with the schools that are Title One schools we wrote Into the state and got special um accommodations to be able to expand this to all of our schools as long as we are identifying students that are struggling either in math reading or social emotional learning and want to use this money to provide support uh into the summer what we're wanting the board to know is that we have this money we plan to use this and then to start committees to decide the length of the program um the length of the day materials needed all of those pieces I was going to talk to you about two things from Springfield that could impact this um one of them became a certainty at 6:21 uh this afternoon right before the board meeting so one of the things that we want to look at is how to identify these students and we were considering using some of our own District assessment to be able to do that um but we're really trying to balance out the amount of time we're spending on assessment and instruction and we were hoping that the state of Illinois uh along with many other states would be successful in having the federal government allow for State waivers for this um we heard from our state Superintendent at 6:20 this afternoon uh that that will not be a possibility uh all assessments will still happen but there will be a waiver for accountability so you may know that we have to have 95% of our students participate or you get um a poor summative uh designation so what the state superintendent email said we are are going to be giving all state assessments but they won't have summative designations or attendance um requirements so we will probably very much want to limit the amount of additional assessments that we are doing to try to identify for summer school and we will be putting a together a committee very shortly to work on existing data and other pieces to do that um one of the other things that we do not have certain information from Springfield yet is there are rumors that there could be a mandatory summer school that is imposed upon us uh nothing in writing that's just rumors but we have been working with other large unit districts across to Illinois to show uh how each of us are creating our own summer school opportunities uh and would like that to remain in local control where we could decide what is the best interest for our students so that could upset our plans here a little bit but uh we like to move forward uh and start utilizing that money to the best of our ability to recoup some of the schooling loss that our students have had can I ask a question about that sure so are we thinking about obviously doing this on site yes um when we met we were also thinking about that we could have a remote learning possibility too but yes the majority of this would be in person can I ask a clarifying question about State assessments so can I clarify that the reason that they are not re um I can't remember what you called it said there's no waiver p no no the I requirement of percentage of people that take the test right their requirement for participation they're not penalizing us sorry correct because these have to be taken in person correct so there's no opportunity for students who are continuing to stay in remote learning to even take this assessment with that being said will parents have the opportunity to opt their student out if they are in person we haven't heard what the new guidelines around that would be the you know our state superintendent was just alerting to that at 620s currently in the past there was that opportunity for parents well or students from what I remember parents couldn't opt out their kids in fact students have to choose to opt to them eles out yes that one I know well so stay tuned for what that could look like this year terrific is there an option for parents to opt their students in for assessment days should they want their child to be assessed and they're fully remote we haven't heard about that yet but I would guess that that would be an opportunity okay thank you for the update sure all right item 7.3 is an informational item to begin conversations and on what our phase three learning plan may look like Faith thank you tonight we're going to talk about uh what phase three could look like for hybrid and in person and this is only a proposal we will not be making a decision this evening we plan to bring back uh a plan for final approval on March 1st and again these plans would be things that would begin uh right after spring break with the first day being April 7th some of the information I'm going to talk about tonight uh just a review of our priorities for learning options so far go over the percentage of students currently in hybrid versus remote by choice pros and cons of several different plans and then as well as our administrative recommendations before we begin you're going have to excuse my soap box for just a little bit about systems I believe a lot of what we do is looking around on the demands of government whether it's local for school boards even at the national level there's three things that we want from systems and really only two are possible and different demands and situations require different things you want a system to be stable and not changing wildly you want it to be open to stakeholders and different groups and you want it to be fast in education we tend to hover around in stable and open we take a lot of committees we don't change quickly that's how education generally runs pandemic came in and said fast now we need to do that and then you saw as we move to fast we sometimes gave up open we sometimes gave up stable and we have to I think address as a district which of those two are our biggest critical needs of our system right now so some of the priorities this is the slide that's been in here many many times as I've talked with everyone about our current plans this is just looking at health risk maximizing the time for inperson instruction making sure our families and students still have some Choice minimizing this disruption to current teacher student relationships and then maintaining students ability to continue in their courses these are the proc percentage of students that are currently in hybrid instruction if you look at Elementary from phase one we had 61% that grew to 66% during phase 2 Junior High stayed exactly the same at 61% and high school had 63% in hybrid phase one and then decreased to 55% I'd now like to talk about Junior High and high school and in both the plans they're very similar between plan a and plan B B so plan a you've took group a that's currently coming in in two days and Group B in two days and combining them so they would be coming Monday Tuesday Thursday and Friday they'd follow the same Phase 2 bell schedule Wednesday would remain a remote learning day and then we would have student support time on Monday Tuesday Thursday Friday so that's plan a the group's coming together for four days Plan B is keeping cohorts of group a and Group B but extending the day so that we have longer periods uh having lunch at school Wednesday would still be a remote learning day and then we would still have student support time so some of the pros and cons and the people that generated this list were our Committees of teachers and administrators Pros uh the students would stay masked the entire time and students could come in person more days of the week that again is the combining of the groups some of the cons is there be a lack of social distancing among students and we'd have to scan and manage a lot more students as they came into the building and into the hallways currently if you took groups a and Group B and combined them we would have 199 classes at OS that would have more than 18 students in them and when you look at the square footage of our classrooms and being able to do six foot distancing 18 is around the average of what we'd be able to do that so we'd have 199 classes at OS that would be higher than that and 115 at East so then look at Plan B uh and again that is making the days longer some of the pros is it still allows for social distancing uh better management of entry and exit and then we'd have longer class periods for instruction and especially our lab classes the cons uh we'd have removal of mass for lunches and we would need to create spaces for lunches and we' have to move some of our classes to other locations we compared the instructional minutes between these two plans so the First Column is the increase in overall minutes per class per week the second column is the increase in remote by choice minutes and the third column is the increase in inperson so with plan a you don't get any additional instructional minutes but you move a lot more of the minutes for in person for those students that are choosing hybrid 66 to be exact plan B if you lengthen the day you get 48 minutes more per class per week of instructional minutes that's also 48 minutes for remote by choice it's only 24 additional minutes from what we have now from inperson I'll now go over Junior High and again very very similar we're plan A is combining the groups where they come in four days a week and then plan B would be um keeping them but a much longer time for full days uh and students eating lunch while at school so again the pros for plan a keeping student support time more students in the building for social emotional learning some of the cons would be much less six foot social distancing uh and could be harder to give equal time to our group C students that are home for remote we did the same calculations here our Junior High classes are a little bit smaller that 17 students is around the average size where we could keep six foot social distancing you can see at the different Junior highs here and I want to emphasize this isn't because our classroom spaces or square footage is different but it we have very different percentages of students at each of our Junior highs that are wanting to come in for inperson so at Thompson you'd only have 54 but at Murphy you'd have 162 classes oops so then the longer day some of the pros um six foot distancing uh lunch at a normal time some of the cons we would see our students only two days in person there would be not enough spaces for lunches uh and we would have to get creative on how we would utilize our staff and spread them out for lunch the instructional minutes similar to that at the high school plan a does not buy you any overall instructional Improvement uh minutes for instruction but it slides 60 minutes per class to iners plan B gets you 44 additional minutes per class per week uh and the same for remote but choice but it only slides 22 more minutes per class per week for in person so our recommendation would be to move to plan B for both high school and Junior High to have the longer days including lunch while still maintaining the student a cohort and the student B cohort this would allow for the social distancing piece but it would buyback many instructional minutes for all of our students so along with enal education we have to consider special education uh and the changes that we would make there would also cause increases for our special education students so all the stars LSP dhh uh and all those pieces they would expand their day just like the other Junior High and high schools to match the longer general education days uh and then all of our resource and caught and 504 students they would follow the same as their gened peers and would have expanded time time as well watching the group it looks like keep going all right I just had one quick question sorry I just wanted to clarify that the numbers you're using to calculate for any class sizes at the high school level that would be over 18 students in a class and Junior High 17 those are based on the current selection correct okay and obvious what else could you use that for but parents will have an opportunity to re select if they want to move yes out of remote or into right and that could change the numbers right one way or the other right those were just samples of what it would look like now right thank you and the reason that those are different at Junior High and High School from what our Elementary at the 20 is because our Elementary class sizes are actually bigger than Junior High and high school by square footage the classrooms themselves mhm okay correct so I do have a question what about for the high school if we're only at 55% what about so I know that a was combining A and B together what was the thought behind not combining A and B and having the longer day besides lunch the lunch pieces of what that would look like that we were already concerned about how to put the lunch piece in and have all that happen and then to double that would be the reason why so we looked at either or did we I I'm spitballing but did we consider maybe using one of the gyms or the C so you can only have or the you can only put 50 people in a room even if it's a very very large room without a Florida ceiling divider just I'm just wondering because we're if if we're at 55% that's pretty close to make it say pretty close to where we need to be and if the kids aren't dressing for gym that gives us a little bit more space there which I realize at least at OHS is a much longer walk here there are the gyms are not as far maybe as they are at OS and we have PE through Gym classes through lunch classes too so you still have spaces that you have to I mean I I is there any particular concern with having lunch during a in the classroom space work students are currently having study hall at Junior High and high school we're not looking at utilizing regular classrooms um to do the lunch pieces it would be bigger classrooms or classrooms that are not used right before or right after so that we could space out have desks and do cleaning areas okay so um just so I can really understand because I I still I'm I'm a little more in the elementary World um so so I can better understand secondary um this recommendation to um do plan B um that would that would mean um that the group C students is this right that the group C these students are are live streaming much longer much longer in a day in the during the day um than they currently are um is that right correct okay so with each of these plans the um remote students are following along with what the uh day would be like for the in-person students so it does become longer class periods and a longer time um for class whether it's in person or remote and so just um I think it's a really this we're tasked with a really hard respon you know really hard job to find options that work for um each group of students but I you know um I'm um I have been hearing concerns that it has been very challenging for many of our secondary students who are fully remote to stay in engaged um with the live streaming streaming component um and you know obviously things take time to get you know as we you know things take time to get used to um so that's certainly a concern that I've heard that even you know the kids that had been remote you know for for so long teachers are kind of Los and we successful um those that have stayed remote and are trying to work through the live streaming piece they're they're losing them um so obviously these were still early days you know um but that is a concern you know that's just a concern that I have is that something that you heard from your committee it is a new way of teaching for our uh secondary teachers that they have students in front of them and they have students via computer and there's an adjustment to be made there as you're um regarding you know questions and and monitoring the chat or having a student that helps monitor the chat making sure that your visuals are great for the students in front of you plus at home uh and it is an adjustment and I think you know these first couple of days there's definitely been struggles I'm optimistic that it is going to improve as students and uh teachers become more comfortable with this style of instruction and I wonder it you know we wouldn't know until it happens but it would be interesting to me to see if we have a jump up from that 53% with another option presented it you know if if families are realizing this is not working as well as we had hoped or or not so it's just an interesting thing to consider and wait and see we had there's really no way to know no yeah and and or even guess because it's not like we have any data to refer back to as right it's really just an antidotal you know kind of idea to think of yeah Heather Heather brought up the point of um more screen time um we're currently have moved to the 5-Hour Day schedule for secondary students so how much less screen time are they having with the 5H hour than they were in the phase one like how does that phase one I guess screen time then compare with this phase there was a bigger break with the very first phase that you had time and then you had you know a a pretty significant break uh the time of the actual minutes uh isn't that different but we don't have the large break it is you know get through your right and now but at the beginning of the school year the first half of the school year everybody was remote cor the whole time and that was a full school day right no sorry was chunk I know I can't remember either um it was still you know the the smaller pieces and what those look like and we had the Wednesday that was completely on a break so it was Xbox day so um different amounts of time and it depends on the student schedule too whether you had a study hall a break lunch all of those pieces and other students you know don't and they are going more back to back uh on what that looks like so um there would be more screen time but you also would have longer breaks with this time because you your lunch would not be just the 30 minutes it would now be 44 minutes if you had a study hall it's now a much longer Break um than what it was is thank s go ahead go I thought you had a question no go ahead um I so I know this was brought up a little bit earlier um as we go from A to B to C or 1 to two to three and I guess this might be a question maybe for somebody else what's what's our data for going to phase three like as a I guess as a state as a district as a yeah that would be my question as well we you have a date listed April 7th um what criteria are you looking at to see if that what happens if we come back from Spring Break and all of a sudden we have another spike in things what what is the criteria for being able to move into a phase three so right now we're looking more at what the school numbers are and what the impact of that is and you can visit the you know the dashboard our community can look at that and it's really looking at um what how much PP we have have on hand whether we have enough staff to do that and whether we see that there's a spread or um a suspicion that it's happening at school then you could do a a break or a pause and it could be for a classroom it could be for a school um I think it would be doubtful as was for the whole District but it could happen so it's not as much based on uh the surrounding Community it's what's happening within the school walls I don't disagree with that approach Faith but I want to know how does that reported back to the board then as far as what's going on at each school so there is a district dashboard uh where we are listing the uh schools um and looking at each uh each week the administrators go through and there's a large um criteria that they're reporting out on how social distancing is being followed what the rates look like Teresa is doing a really good job of um providing all of those stats and we're keeping close eye on all of that okay cuz I express my concern that people aren't being notified about positive cases in the building and I think that is a common concern for teachers and other staff members to know if there's somebody in the building that they're dealing with and I know that you guys have reassured the board members that that's being communicated to the people who've been exposed to those folks but I I just want to say you know at this meeting that I think it's really important to have those cases um accountable where they were accountable for people that are positive and that we're making some effort to document that all right Elementary all right um wanted to talk through two approaches that we didn't bring to the committee just because I'm receiving a lot of questions and things from the community of why can't we do this so one of the pieces is what if we had uh similar to the high in the high school that Stu the teachers simultaneously taught their first graders here that are in person and their first graders remote and um that's one of the things that I'll talk about and then the other that uh keeps coming up is couldn't we switch and have some teachers teach all the kids that are in person and have other teachers uh teach those students that want remote so we feel strongly that especially for our youngest Learners to um reach be taught remotely and in person at the same time that that is not in the best interest of developing early literacy and early numeracy skills um for either set of students our teachers are great they're trying so hard but to simultaneously manage a class of young students and teach them we think is an unreasonable burden then you don't have to pay attention too much to this uh very busy slide because I summarize it in the next but what this is is just going through and looking for our first grade classes at all of our schools if we looked at phase two of the students that have said that they want to be in remote and in person separated them out gave them to teachers that only taught remote teachers that only did in person how many students would be moved how many new teachers we would need um what our class sizes would look like so again this is a first grade example we would have to move 440 students to different teachers and to make that happen we would need to hire five new teachers because we would be above our current class class caps and we would then move to having 20 classes sorry 18 classes over 20 students and that's just for first grade so if you wanted a ballpark of what this would look like for elementary multiply all those numbers by six for kindergarten first 2 third fourth and fifth grade so we did talk through three plans um plan a with continuing the phase two schedule with no changes Plan B we've heard from quite a few teachers that they would like to switch Wednesday uh and have that time be in the morning instead of the afternoon or plan C using the phase 2 schedule but change Wednesdays to inperson and having our remote students live stream into the classroom so with plan a some of the things uh that were listed as Pros it's a consistent schedule for all uh it allows our special education self-contained classrooms to blend into general education on Wednesday Wednesday um daycare and busting would remain the same for families the cons the large one would be no increase in time for imperson instruction looking at Plan B and again that's just flipping the combined inperson and remote uh time that is now at Wednesday afternoon to the mornings the pros would be you would get 10 more minutes of core instruction on on Wednesday some of the cons it would be a change in schedules for all the stakeholders uh and it would affect daycare for families plan C would be uh Pros would be increased time for in-person instruction some of the cons would be it would be a change in schedules uh for all of the stakeholders it would also require our Elementary staff to learn the art of teaching in person and live streaming all at the same time for one uh day a week so our recommendation for elementary is no additional change and the reason that we go back to if you think back to the very beginning about what do we need from a system we're thinking that stability is very much needed at the elementary level right now so if that that would be the case then our special education classes would also have no change that would be the same for our resource and our 504 plans we also went through and talked about early childhood and what the different plans could be there where plan a we could just continue with the phase two schedule Plan B is you could add in-person instruction on Wednesdays uh and following that the pros and the cons of plan A would be less change um and and being able to have that consistency that we've talked about Plan B um some of the some of the pros would be increased student contact time be very very tough on staff that they would be very very reduced to uh much less support time that they already have uh and then we do feel that parents would not want yet another change so quickly so our recommendation for Early Childhood is also no change very briefly I'd like to talk about some of the other special education programs uh for Pathways we did talk through three plans Plan B would be the choice that we went with where we uh continue with our current schedule but add community- based instruction on Wednesdays in the morning uh and the pros and cons are listed there but I know we want to get to questions and those types of things so I will go rather quickly through this for Eva also we wanted wanted to go with plan B this is an increase in iners especially at the junior high level not much change at elementary and we already had expanded uh time for high school there just talking through the different plans again we went with Plan B a goal we want to on Wednesdays add another in-person day from 7:40 to 12:40 so that would be an increase for them and then finally what kind of a time line are we looking at uh if this is approved or what plans are approved on March 1st then we would have staff communication on the 3 parent communication out on the fourth new parent choice uh due by March 10th uh to make all of the arrangements that need to be made so that we could get this going immediately after spring break questions who would like to begin or are there no questions just a point of clarification I I did notice we were using a factor of 18 at high school and a factor of 17 at the junior high school but yet we've been having discussion after discussion after discussion about 20 and then I will tie that back to and I I know those are specific individual classes that you highlighted in the table yet when I have visited schools and when I've talked I ran into some teachers over the weekend I'm hearing about five and six kids in the classroom uh with with half attendance so quick math that's 12 so I guess I'm curious about the Delta between some of the things we're seeing and and what you're reporting back out on sure and there are some class CL rooms across the district that only have 12 students coming in person absolutely we have one class uh at Boulder Hill that has 21 of their students all in remote um so it is very different as you go across the district where you have some schools that tend to have a lot more students in person uh than they do remote it's even different sometimes by the same teachers um at the same school within a grade level that at a second particular second grade class they have a lot more students that are in remote by choice the other two have more that are in person so it's very different is not spread the math is not the same as you will go from school to school and again the 17 1820 related to the square footage correct so I do have a quick question actually that Brent's to tagline off that one which is at specifically at the junior high and high school level which is really what I think Brent was referring to there when we're we were calculating those numbers of 17 and 18 in a classroom were you just thinking um traditional general education classes like a language arts or a math class or did that also take into account classes like band or choir or physical education where there's significantly higher number of students anyway those are all the classes so there is some band that's in there there is some choir that's in there yes because obviously a band room can fit a lot more than corre 17 18 kids and all I know I can't speak for OE but I'm assuming they have a pretty large program as well that they would correct so they have large rooms or you could obviously fit a lot more than right some of our classrooms and some of our class rosters are very different depending on the subject they that we're talking about how many classrooms do we have total at the Junior High High School levels do you happen to have that figure and if you don't it's okay I don't know how many classrooms but it would also be the amount of classrooms times seven like a lot of our classrooms are used seven or eight times in a day so I'd have to i' have to come back on the map that makes sense I have one more question sorry and this refers to the eating of the lunch the the dreaded eating of the lunch at school um what are what is the idea of what lunch is going to look like because normally you go into the cafeteria and you walk down the line and you get the school food now my kids are grabbing a bag on their way out the door um that's filled with all kinds of goodies right I had a corn dog today I will not tell you the interesting things we had today but Matthew got mini pancakes and he was very excited that was that was last week for us um but if it's going to be a bag lunch type thing and they're already assigned to a study hall room for lunch now that we assume would have social distancing thus the assigning of the room I too am wondering why that wouldn't potentially be an option unless those classrooms are more full and they can't do the distancing right so and each school could be very different um trer is one of the uh places where it will be the most tricky perhaps to figure that out and how many students are um needing to eat lunch at the same time as you all know it's not just everybody has lunch at staggers so whatever spaces you have also need to be um washed and cleaned before the next group of students comes in to be able to um utilize that same space I know one of the things that they're talking about at the high school if we had 50 desks that are out there that students are eating at you might use a hundred and have rows one three five and you know seven be the first lunch 2468 be the next lunch and then go back and clean so that would be more time uh to do that it's not going to be what we think of a lunch where that everything is open and there's all the regular options for lunch there would be very limited selection that students would make a choice from uh and they would need to pick up and then not everybody would be able to eat where food is being distributed you'd have to travel um to a different location or a different classroom uh it's possible that we might even utilize you know some Open Spaces um for lunch by the time that you know April comes around maybe there would even be some things that we could utilize as outdoor um eating areas to help with those pieces that would be great we haven't used our out spaces at the high schools as much as we could have I know up to this point we've had concerns about staff um wanting to supervise lunch um one of the things that is making this more possible now in my opinion is we'll have a lot of our staff that have chosen uh to become vaccinated and would be able to supervise lunch uh hopefully with more peace of mind than they would have had if we had done this a month ago I have a question for Dr sparland on that when will you know uh when the majority of the teachers have gotten their second vaccination uh February 28th this Sunday is the second second of uh this 26th and the 28th so any teachers that took advantage of that opportunity will have been vaccinated which is over 2,000 okay out of how many employee wise we have around 2400 employees but anyone who was uh everyone was Ed the opportunity so if they took advantage I just wanted to know when it when we were hitting the point where we had the assurance that it was most of the employees that would be this Sunday yeah okay so I have a question can I put a a quick plugin I think that they're also looking for volunteers for this Sunday as there will be 2,000 some second doses so if you would like to volunteer I'm sure there is a sign up you can join that ter is saying yes there is a sign up that you can sign up for if you'd like to help it that way Teresa is there any plug for that right now or no sorry yes there is a spreadsheet I'm happy to share it with all of you so I have a question um we know that um we have certainly been getting a lot of questions about okay so what's the next phase and now what's the next phase and now how do we get kids in more and what can what else can we do all really reasonable realistic questions there's also questions from teachers and families and and a lot of people that are asking why are we why why are we already thinking about phase three when we barely got started with what our current plan is um and I'm yeah I'm I'm interested in hearing about that I'm concerned about our timeline you know cuz this is to me now our timeline this is the fast you know in terms of a systems think in my mind um and I understand why you know I understand we need the lead time I understand we need to inform people um and we need the planning time to make this move but this for a lot of people and teachers and families included I think they don't feel that they have enough information to make some solid decisions about phase three so I'm certainly getting um mixed emails I'm sure as you all are of you're not moving fast enough yeah you're moving way too fast fast um you're not doing enough in person you're doing way too much in person um and you're throwing social distance I think that you know we've seen that our um Community is in very different places on this really important decision um when you think about why moving fast it certainly was difficult to start talking about phase three when we were still in Phase One um with staff um some push back of like Faith you want us to think about how to do phase three and we haven't even and yet in order to get phase three going um and still have it be worthwhile moving to because even when we come back after spring break that's about seven weeks left of school so yes we've we've we've made schools all over the country learn how to be a little fast um and that's that's Growing Pains um that's something that we're not um used to but yet there was a necessity to continue to react to new information um knowing that our staff is now going to be vaccinated knowing that you know we have those different pieces that allows for more um I don't think for elementary there's much left to build but there was for junior high in high school right um so it's difficult um very difficult on our parents and our students it's been difficult on staff um to make these many changes as well and yet we're wanting to continue to make improvements which then cause us to change so that's a long-winded answer without much Direction I apologize for that but um it's more of admiring the problem of what we've been trying to do do well the fact that we come back right and we're we only have seven weeks left before school ends kind of just leads me more into I would like to see both A and B on the longer schedule especially at the high school you're going to lose a lot of seniors after week what five so granted that's you know four weeks of a bunch of kids being in the building but if you put this out to parents parents who don't want their kids in classes of say 20 my biggest class right now is 20 my smallest class is 14 so we still do Labs we still do you know we wash our hands all the time everybody stays as you know far apart as you can and it's probably not always six feet kids congregate that's just what they do but I I mean if I if I have any voice in it at all it would be for the longer day for both right now that's not and and not to say that it's not possible but that's not what we have that's none of the plans right you know right right like for both groups for long days um and and I for one really want to see um the secondary level um be able to maintain social distancing um amongst students as best we can before I get before everybody out there jumps all over me I know we all know there's going to be classes that um we might not be able to do that we're not that that that's not going to happen for but as best we can plan for and as best we can support um that's what I think is one of the things that I think is really important and I want to say that I think that the board is taking into consideration much more carefully this time looking at this plan what it entails and and I just appreciate that because I think that was a very important piece where it's easy for us to second guess it's easy for us to say this is what we want even though it's unreasonable rearrange this rearrange that and I think now we're starting to realize like there's a price to be paid you know depending on what our choices are and we're we're being more um seasoned and reasoned in what we're looking at and you know I'm not going to say which option I think is best but I think that all of us are considering what's going to happen based on what we choose and I just want to say to Faith do you think that these options that are there I mean plan a is in place but Plan B and plan C is that a timeline that involves you doing a good job of those because a lot of people that's their criticism is you need to be able to do it well and are you talking for elementary for plan A B and C for junior high and high school too well anytime time that you start something new it there's an adjustment period on what that looks like I think with Elementary we're already very close to being maxed out of what the instructional time would be um and I don't think you know moving to plan C at elementary which was would buy one more half day of in person but having the teachers figure out how to manage their class set up the technology into in person for one day a week I don't see um St becoming great at that and that isn't because our staff wouldn't try and they wouldn't do all those pieces just to to teach and invest that much time for a half day of instruction once a week uh is an extra big I see that very much that that is not a great idea yeah um if Junior High um having the expanded uh periods in that longer time to do some of our classes especially with science labs and those things when you're recouping 13 14 minutes a day of more instructional time uh I think that that that's already where how teachers had been teaching you know before we hadn't it's a new twist to be able to get everything done in 30 minutes um so to be able to bring it back and to have the longer period of time um and some of the subjects adjust to the shorter time frame better than others but if you look at setting up science labs that's difficult in 30 minutes okay in all fairness from a science teacher it can be done and it can be done really really really really well it just requires more work from the teacher which I mean listen I have worked harder this year than I have in 20 years of teaching but I you know what I in 11 more weeks I'm going to get a 12 week break right so I know we're asking a lot I know we are but you got to you got to keep going so I just have a couple questions Brent did you have anything else that you wanted to ask about I think that was we've heard from everybody okay no I I mean I'll just take a comment I like I I think most people know where I am I I I want us to be open and I want us to be five days a week and I want us to be in classrooms and you know when I talk to teachers there there's some level of frustration that for some kids this was a lost Year and that motivates me for those that feel like well there's only X weeks left I say but we haven't had full-time instruction for a year and I'd like to get us closer to it thanks so my only questions I'm going to be very simple and very big picture um you talked at the beginning about systems that we have to balance between stable open and fast is this the best we can do in the systems that we currently have in place in our school district now are your recommendations what you believe would be best for the students to provide that balance between more instructional time and still creating safety yes I guess that's really the only question that I have um oh no I remember the other one ready you're not thinking of a phase four this year are you no I would really like us to be able to say okay we are here and this is what we need to do and get down to doing this really really well um and have my team and the teachers and all those also start building on all the things that need to be done to support our students next year um there is so much work to be done to look at what are the essential standards how do we build interventions at the beginning of next year to recoup some of this um how are we going to identify our students for gifted in this unusual time how are we going to make our staffing projections when our kindergarten numbers are quite low and what does that look like how are we going to adjust assessment there is so much that needs to be done um in order to um really work on preparing for our students the next time around I believe that you know we will have gotten to um a max amount of instruction with social distancing if you're willing to put aside more social distancing you can get more iners time but these plans really come very close to the instructional minutes that we would deliver at Junior High and high school during a regular year but it is remote and um you know the hybrid approach so I while we're making one more change I would suggest then we work at being stable for the remainder of the year um and having supporting students and staff get used to the last of these changes get as good as we can about catching everybody up both in academics and social emotional and continue to put our SES on this year but February is always the year in my position that I start living in two school years you're trying to live out this year and you're spending all of your time trying to prepare for next year um and that that needs adequate planning in time too and just to ask about next year will there be I mean I assume there will be a plan that next year you could choose to go all remote and there would be some dedicated staff for that and there would be all in person as best we can tell for next year it remains to be seen what next year would need need to look like but a remote option would if we move forward would most likely be designated teachers just for that and a much smaller percentage okay thank you thank you very much unless there's anything else that's relevant to the recommendations um if you have more details maybe shoot them through emails if things come up as you're thinking this through I I do I'm sorry I do just have a quick question um there'll be an opportunity for parents to um you know make a selection again um we are are not putting any limits or um limits on that I mean anybody could choose to go to to correct begin a hybrid okay we don't okay right there are the last during the last but we're we are not doing that right so okay can I have a ask question Lori oh right I remember you Mr Bowman yes you're here virtually yes of course you can um I I like the options that that we hear tonight um there's some good movement forward and as I look through the recommendation uh to move forward at Junior High and high school does that recommendation come strictly from a um administrative recommendation or is there a building admin Administration and or any committee work that comes with that recommendation as well yes um we put together uh Committees of teachers and administrators uh at all the different levels and the special education programs as well uh and um took their information the pros and cons that are listed on those slides are statements in pros and cons from that uh committee work that again was teachers and administrators okay and is this an ongoing as we're talking about next year options and what we've been moving through is this an ongoing committee or is this just been the committee based on a questionnaire and would you entertain having a committee moving forward so that way depending on or or to have a game plan for the fall you know that way that way we're not going through or well I can't say we the board doesn't have to go through uh these types of motions multiple times and as we go through the phases the district's going to be able to say okay if there are no changes we know how we're entering the fall and and what the the metrics are going to be moving forward without having to go through um these types of of plannings every two and a half to three months so the Committees were um we met virtually um and you know talked through the different options uh there with the pros and cons we we've already been talking about uh what would committee but it's probably committees uh because Elementary and secondary tend to have very different uh outlooks and and needs but yes that's part of the work that needs to happen um soon not only for what would remote look like or what might different scenarios but even if we are all back in person um what are the different uh changes that need to be made some of the things that we've learned that we might want to duplicate about Google classroom and other pieces but also how do we need to change uh our instruction and our practices uh one of the things that I'm really interested in pursuing at the elementary level is six weeks early on of intensive interventions where we divide up the school and really work solidly to shore up those pieces and then begin our regular mtss process and what that would look like um and utilize all hands on deck uh to make sure that our students are getting their early literacy and early numeracy pieces um we're also as we're saying building the summer school bridge to try to compensate for some of the school loss that has happened there but you are exactly right that committee work needs to start in the next couple of weeks uh to get all of this going for the fall okay I look forward to it I just hope we don't hear tomorrow that 35 to end the junior high day that's the first we've ever heard of it we can't do that we weren't asked about it I I just I hope we don't run into that as we have gone through with some of these last phases we've talked about so I look forward to our vote next board meeting okay so as we've discussed on March 1 this will be on as an action item either to vote Yes or No to accept the recommendations of the administration on what a phase three would look like to begin April 7th thank you and I know that none of these plans and I think every board member here could probably Echo the same saying that we know that none of these plans are made by one person or by two people or by the 10 people in this room but that hopefully we really are listening to you know our staff that are putting these actions into action um and that we are able to do the best we can for the kids to get them what we need to have them know moving on to action items item 8.1 board policies any questions yeah I had a uh just a what I hope is a quick question and and maybe it's I'm just not reading it right um I think it's the second part of that so we kind of used to have a policy that any board member could request an item to be added to a future agenda and and and obviously time sometimes you need more than a few days to prepare the information for that I guess as I'm reading the changes now it looks like we're saying no that's no longer the case it is the decision of the then board president to decide to add an item and I'm asking why we're making that change I thought we changed that so that anybody could ask to have it put on anyone could ask an addition or a withdrawal rather than just add addition that you can also add a withdrawal it actually broadens it it just doesn't put the uh but that's isn't that specific to addition or removing from consent oh yes that's from consent do you want to just G of consent and just say the agenda rent I think you're talking about the second paragraph yeah so oh I say the blue par the blue one okay I believe this was suggested by press but there's absolutely no legal reason to even make this change I mean you could certainly retain the original language I think my concern there is while you know the the board president obviously um is capable of making some decisions I I think there's been frustration in the past by other board members at other times I'm not speaking about you Lori I just think there's been frustration from other board members and feeling like they weren't able to get a topic added and they weren't given a reason why and they felt like they were being roadblocked and I I think it would be better if there's open conversation and there isn't a hard policy um as to only one person being able to make the decision on what what topics are added to meetings so I think that that's the intention that's certainly how we operate it says in the blue any the it looks like everything was pulled out except any add added in was that any board member May sub submit suggested agenda items to the board president for his or her consideration prior to that it had said will be added on the agenda if received 96 hours before if received less than 96 six hours before the scheduled meeting they will be placed on the next agenda I don't know that we've run up against that in reality as we haven't lately but it has happened before I believe you um and you can't predict what can happen in the past or in the future um what if we just got rid of it on the first paragraph consent yeah I I think that that really speaks to this I I think that the time limit was probably the 96 hours probably coincides with the length of time needed before an agenda must be made public prior to a meeting is that correct yeah because it has to be posted at least 48 hours so that would give you the additional time to make you know determine if it can or should be on and what documentation needs to be added I can pull it take it back if you want I mean what was the committee's thoughts on this when you had this in policy committee we just anybody could be able to suggest an item yeah to a board member so if on that first paragraph in the red if it just said any board member May request the addition or withdrawal of any item um on the agenda get rid of the word consent could we just do that well I think what Brent is saying what he likes is and please correct me if I'm understanding this wrong is that you like the specificity of it will be added rather than it anyone can suggest it is that correct yeah I to me I I I I think that we're we're proposing a change here that puts potentially too much power in the board president to be able to reject any and all suggestions and while I'm not at all suggesting that that would happen it's happened in the past with other board presidents I can any other thoughts on this before I jump in again my only thought would be do we need to take it back and not vote on that right now that's kind of what I'm thinking I'd like to have some more discussion around that concept and the 96 hours it it I don't know what year that was added as a time frame but I don't know if that's different now that you need like a week notice or and else it'll be on the next agenda I don't know if that needs to be addressed but it probably should be discussed I think the one thing that's added on here I think I do actually want to keep in that blue section is where it says the board will take final action only on items contained in the posted agenda items not on the agenda may still be discussed so the final action more and I think that's the thing that we've actually asked you several times recently this year on if we can add an item for action and we can't so I do feel that that piece should be added in to the policy but for the other part I'm I'm not sure if that has to be remaining at the 96 and I'd like to hear some more information about that well we've already taken it back twice I think the intent was just so that a board member any board member could get an item on the agenda that was the intent okay and and now that thank you for highlighting that last sentence there because now that to me seems awkward about I understand the goal here is we're we're trying to say that we're only going to take final action on items contained in the agenda but I think we have a a separate policy that says something slightly different if I'm not mistaken that talks about how we can only take action on items at a meeting after an item has been brought as a informational item and I don't I don't want us to be in Conflict so we'll take it back one more time am I remembering that correctly you are and that's just again that's a practice that this board has that's not legally required but you have that it it's com comes for information and then typically action item at a separate meeting and that is in here somewhere um on the 96 hours that's really just the double the 48 so you have to have it posted 48 hours before the meeting and it was just suggesting anyone who wants something on there let whoever has to know know 48 hours in advance of that um that's what that was for and then the rent to this one this is just merely affirming under the open meetings act you can only take final action on an item that was already listed on the agenda um you can discuss other items you just can't take action on something that wasn't there so then on that could we just could we reference and point to because I know we have a policy on it reference to the policy that says that this board must Place items for information as informational items a meeting prior to them being taken before action is taken I don't know if I'd want to go that far because once in a while as we've seen things come up with date deadlines that there was no reasonable way to be aware of that it would require calling an extra meeting and sometimes that may not time frame wise work so let me make two quick comments here so first of all it is a policy so the board can at any time yeah take a vote to wave the policy because of XYZ and vote on something that evening the reason why we the board had in the past worked on this information before action is to give the public ample opportunity to be made aware of items that we would be taking action on and potentially um offering in put or consultation so I I I hear you but I but I think that because it's not a state requirement it's our requirement that in those cases where we have to take immediate action because of posing deadlines that we can you know just take a vote to wave the policy for that one item if it if it needs to happen all right would you like to make the motion to remove this policy number from an action item i' like to make a motion to table policy to colon 220 and have policy committee review the two items discussed Brent excuse me I I'm going to suggest you amend that um it's been back to the committee twice okay I you I think you need to have that conversation here at this board level so table it for or to be added to an upcoming board this board uh because it may come back a third time with things you all don't agree with right so maybe add to amend it to be added to information at the March 15th meeting okay so let me restate my motion I make a motion to withdraw policy to colon 220 to have the items discussed tonight revised and brought back to the board at our next meeting for information second there was a second I think m al I got it okay second Mrs Doyle hi Mrs Swanson hi Mrs croner okay welcome to the february 22nd 2021 regular business meeting of border school trustees with a start time of six o'clock uh let's begin by if everyone may rise we'll ask mr angel to lead us in the pledge to lead us i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice thank you mr angel i'll be seated item two this evening our patron comments mrs green do we have anybody this evening thank you and then we can go to the consent agenda dr terrell so our consent agenda this evening for your consideration is the minutes for our special session with the board of finance meeting and then also our regular business meeting for last month the uniform conflict of interest disclosure disposition and of stale dated checks the end of the year resolution number personnel agenda and then the voucher registered checks as listed thank you dr carroll you've heard the consent agenda as presented by dr terrell do we have any do i have a motion to approve some move second move by mr babjack and second by mr angel any questions or comments for dr terrell not all those in favor signify by saying aye aye opposed me because i wasn't present got it tom thank you we got uh opposed motion carries uh 4-0 and tom did abstain from not being present at the last meeting diana i i would be remiss just if i don't make a comment based on some of the individuals mentioned in the personnel agenda that are retiring uh we have i mean there's all kinds of individuals but three of them that just come to mind being in our finance department with cara vonitz diane spree and then of course karen toth our transportation director um we wish them nothing but the best and those are going to be three spots are going to be very difficult to fill based on their expertise and just professionalism that they've brought to those spots over the time so congratulations to all three of them and uh i'm hoping we find the next you know the next best people to fill those seats and i thought about that this morning at 4am when my phone was ringing and i was having conversations with karen about weather so yeah they will be dearly missed so i want to make sure there was a notation in there based on their uh everything they've done for the crown point school corporation i appreciate that artie was going outside oh sorry okay all right well i trust me i've been around long enough to know that though they're greatly appreciated as all our employees are but when someone's leaving us and doing the job that they've done for the years they've been here thank you it's well said katie's got to work that out for her that's for sure [Music] thank you mr angel and uh moving to action items we have 4.01 the 2021 summer school program mr hartman mr warning members of the board we're seeking your approval tonight of the 2021 summer school program uh this will include high school middle school and uh elementary school it'll be a very comprehensive program at the high school for credit classes there will be online classes they will there will be our physical education classes as well as some credit recovery those courses are for students who are missing uh quit missing credits and it's time for them to make up and there's also opportunity at the high school for what's called restart is to help students to improve their grades in courses that they have been taking during the course of of this year at the elementary and middle school a number of things are happening at the elementary and middle as we move uh hopefully to a green and bringing kids back in next year and if you just kind of think about what that means uh the terms that i've used is re-entry we're gonna have students that are gonna need to to re-enter into the school and we think summer could be a viable time to help them in that transition uh we think that there's an opportunity for uh advocacy for our students as well as in the social emotional area we anticipate and understand the learning gaps and also we understand that there's interest based we want to get kids connected during the during the summer school program at the elementary schools uh so this evening we're seeking your approval of the 2021 summer school program thank you mr harvard recommendation approved of 2021 carpool city school preparation summer school program do a motion to approve so moved moved by mr angel on second by mr hoffman any questions or comments from mr hartman not all those in favor signify by saying aye aye opposed the most curious five zero thank you mr hartman thank you and uh 4.02 is to purchase the student chromebooks ms dolan thank you mr president this time of year we're a little ahead of where we are normally due to some production concerns and delivery for our annual crumpled purchase for incoming kindergartners and then a refresh for the grade levels that are due in the case for this year that would be ninth grade we're also purchasing some additional units to accommodate some growth that we're seeing coming in through kindergarten as well so mr gill took this to bid these chromebooks as with prior years last for four years they are paid for through textbook rental we are going to continue to utilize the rainy day fund as the financier for the purchase and then the building level textbook rental will then repay the rainy day fund every year until that's paid for in full any additional units that are not assigned to a student get paid for essentially by the curriculum department and so the rainy day fund is still made made hold a change for this year we included the appropriation and rainy day for purchasing these items as part of the annual budget process so that we don't have to come in ask for an additional we just did it as part of the process from our budget meetings so the administration would recommend approval to purchase 1400 dell 3100 touchscreens and 400 dell 3100 non-touch chromebooks along with 1800 google management licenses from electronic strategies inc esi at five hundred thousand one hundred and ninety two dollars even thank you miss don you've heard the recommendation to purchase the student chromebooks at a cost of five hundred thousand hundred and ninety two dollars from ms dowling we have a motion to approve so move second move by mr babjack and second by mr smith any questions or comments about the chromebook purchase ms don did we turn in any of the old ones do we get any kind of credit for anything that's taken its useful life out of the equation so we we don't lease them anymore we purchase them outright because the buyback at the end is not to our advantages to the advantage of the manufacturer so we essentially keep the ones that come back to us as spares if they're usable or for spare parts that's through the manufacturer you said the i mean you said that we lease them no you don't anymore we don't purchase them outright um because the return if you remember cost us some money to reconcile that out the odds that a chromebook used by a student for four years is going to be without any type of mark or imperfection is essentially amazing esi are we familiar with them we've done we've contracted with them in the past my question is whether or not this is this a vendor we've used dealt with before yes sir that was brian's question also tom you guys were thinking the same there okay any other questions or comments from this dolly all those in favor signify by saying aye hi hi opposed welcome carrie's 5-0 thank you miss dowling and uh mr gill also for um take care of that work there 4.03 perch whitfield elementary school category two e-rate network cab uh was that cabling project miss dolly thank you mr army at winfield elementary school the new editions have all the new network and i believe it's cad 6a i think or chat yeah there you go cat says the smart technology genius not me it's all going in as cat 6a the rest of the building the existing building this is essentially to replace that existing structure cabling so that we can elevate the technology within that building so this will resolve some challenges we've identified with the generator being able to connect to all of the wi-fi and the things within the building is because of that old cabling and how it's connected so this is essentially dealing with replacement of the existing outdated cabling within the building this is eligible for e-rate funding which essentially means we're going to pay about 50.

education uh scholarship accounts and the expansion of the indiana school choice scholarship program that'll be a e okay can i get a motion to approve the adjustments with the agenda i'll make a motion a second okay i have a motion a second any um discussion hearing none all in favor all opposed motion passes next item on the agenda is public comments regarding agenda items does anyone have any public comments we have one hello uh no not yet i don't think her mic's working corey cory i don't know there you go okay so i would like to make um comments on the um board resolutions that mr gibney just added to the agenda um i just want to thank you for embracing the opportunity to give pass the board resolutions i'll talk about 8d first basically the resolution would send a message to the legislator legislators regarding the critical need to move public school employees to the priority list for vaccinations because unfortunately we all know the legislature has pretty much thrown us all to the side and we're just supposed to take what they you know give us and then moving on to house spell 1005 which is ae on the agenda um that that is an awful bill um that will potentially move 202 million dollars of public education funding to private vouchers and unsupervised home schools so um they're both awful and so finally on wednesday of this week we are asking everyone for their support to wear black to represent the darkness facing indiana public education giving these bills and how things are going so now they're switching houses so there'll be still be time to contact your legislators so i'd just like to say thank you for that consideration thank you any other comments okay moving on next item on the agenda is recognitions or recognitions we want to start with mrs johnson if the parents want to come down closer and get pictures you're welcome to red pass student of the month is raelyn brewer she is a first grader in mrs krohn's room she was nominated by an instructional assistant mrs peters mrs peters nominated raylyn because she is always ready to work she listens to instructions well the first time she is respectful to me mrs peters and her classmates she tries her best at everything she does and one of the things that we really consider to be such a strong red path star is she is so kind in her actions and words so our student of the month is raylen brewer [Applause] congratulations last month my student of the month was had to go home and unfortunately tonight this is my december student of the month she's i plan to bring her here next month when she's able to be here but our current student of the month is mr craig ames prairie is a second grader in mrs carr's classroom and mrs carr nominated him saying cray is a great second grader and an incredible boy he works hard in school but even more importantly he is always kind and thoughtful he greets everyone with a pleasant good morning and his manners are non-stop all day craig recognizes when someone hasn't been chosen in a game and that will be the person that he will choose next he follows directions the first time they are given in class and does his best work whether it's a spelling game or a math test i know he will try his best participating in class is another strong suit of craze he asks questions and shares comments that relate to the topic and he sets a good example for his classmates with the good choices he makes every day i'm so happy that i'm able to be a part of craig's learning and growing craig ames is amazing young man pray [Applause] ames so hello so representing tz as our student of the month is lucas frye and lucas is a fifth grader in mrs hopper's classroom lucas you are taller than me all of a sudden it just happened you had a others his knowledge about our presidents and historical eras has been especially impressive and helpful in our classroom discussions lately and i am so very proud of him so that's from mrs hopper so congratulations lucas [Applause] good evening our middle school student of the month kaylee schwab could not be here tonight but i let her mom know that i would read everything about her and totally embarrass her in front of everyone that's not around her and then do the same thing at a lunch coming up so in front of her peers kaylee has often been okay with being in the background and not being in the spotlight however recently she has become much more outgoing in class and took on a solo this year for the solo and ensemble contest she asked lots of questions practiced diligently and ended up having a wonderful performance so congratulations to kaylee schwab so the high school would like to recognize paige kaiser mrs mann is the one who nominated her mrs mann says that paige is a classy intelligent young woman who is focused on attending the best indiana university in our state purdue she has been accepted and is looking forward to a future of being a boilermaker she works diligently to get her tasks completed she adds great insights to issues we discussed in statistics and probability she's an outstanding worker and works with others and accepting responsibility she sees great things for this tiger cub in her near future that's by mrs mann okay the next item on the agenda is the consent agenda which consists of the meeting minutes from january 25th 2021 the regular board meeting minutes and the annual board of finance meeting minutes from january 25th 2021.

we're going to pay 50 of the cost the federal government will pay the other 50. it's not a reimbursement they pay it and then we pay our half and so that's definitely a benefit it's something mr gill leverages quite regularly we work with ad tech on to extend those dollars to our advantage so brian mr gill did do a bid on there you can see they evaluated it based on factors this is pretty common for him when we do gambling this is a project you will see commonly as we move forward with renovations as well because we have other buildings this is necessary so the 2020 geo bond is the funding source so we did contemplate this as part of the overall project the administration would recommend approval to purchase the cabling systems from tri-electronics who was the low bidder at a total cost of 85 300 the district's responsibility is 50 of this total the rest is funded through the federal e-rate era thank you miss dolly you've heard the recommendation to prove the purchase of the cable system try electronics at a total cost of eighty five thousand three hundred dollars uh do we have a motion to improve yeah so moved moved by mr hoffman and uh and second by mr smith any questions or comments from ms downing on the cabling purchase um if not i'll favor signify by saying hi opposed the motion carries 5-0 thank you miss donnie it looks like you have another one coming up at 4.04 the approval of preschool fees and charges as you all know and are excited i'm sure even though oh wait this morning should be the most excited preschoolers coming through the preschool program is going to roll out officially in the fall before that happens there's obviously fees and charges associated with that program um i think normally we would handle this through part of the regular textbook rental process but because of the need for pre-registration and to get some things done in advance we're coming to you today to get authorization for the fees and charges associated with the program within the recommendation you can see for children age three they'll attend two days per week the monthly fee is 120 for children age four days per week is three the monthly fee is 180 and for children age five so five but maybe not eligible for kindergarten it's a five day a week program half days the whole program is half days correct and the monthly fee is 300 we're also asking for authorization for a 65 non-refundable supply fee that we're going to use as a placeholder to hold their their seat within the program itself because we want to make sure we fill all the seats uh that are available lastly um obviously to participate in the program they have to live within the the parents have lived within the school corporation boundary but also we're going to discount or i think no charge doctors cannot afford to call or students who qualify for free and reduced lunch we are going to track that to see what that real impact is because we really don't know yet if we need some data under our belts with the program operation so essentially we're asking for your approval on those fees as indicated for attendance the 65 non-refundable supply fee to have the corporation cover the cost for free and reduced lunch students and that's our recommendation thank you for the recommendation to approve the preschool fees and charges and the amounts listed we have a motion to approve some movement second moved by mr angel and second by mr babjack any questions or comments from ms dowling um i'd have a just i heard you say it but i just want to make sure i heard it correctly that the if if a child qualifies for free and reduced we'd hope that the fee would be waived completely correct not a reduced rate it would be away for you okay and then also on uh two more things the the monthly fee for um i'm curious if there was research done locally but then also if we look statewide since this is kind of a new program for us she can talk to that i know they've been working on that we've been keeping a big spreadsheet on league schools and then also league schools were taking consideration we wanted and then my other part to that was i'm assuming you've had a large interest since yes we're at um i think it's 110 about the uh so we would be over 160 students at this point any other questions for mrs paskus or stella again all his favorite things opposed opposed motion carries 5-0 what do we have next we're going to uh discussion report items we have 541 policy revisions and additions the first reading list for cuba good evening mr presidents and board members as you know we partner with niola for our recommendations for board policy updates corrections and revisions this would be our update from late november and december you can see the policies highlighted there that we will be recommending down the road here to revise or update mostly due to making them congruent or in adherence with indiana code updates and you know state law there's some technical corrections in there as well so i present to you this evening this round of uh for first for first reading the policy updates uh for what is presented by neola as volume 33 number one [Music] i mean i think the intent would be for us to have a second reading and i'll clean it up and accept all the changes because this reads really rough in this first draft as you can see in the markup version and then we'll have it cleaned up so it'll be viewable for second reading next month you know as it will appear so we uh just like to present this uh for you this evening for first reading thank you mr q we have the information here for us to touch up on our own we'll get back to you next month as you said thank you thank you that 5.02 cap middle school update uh dr tora yeah so we're excited to come to you uh this evening and just give you an update of where we are with taft things are moving around along rather quickly as they need to be we have developed a committee for the design of the new middle school and mr gian fermi is chairing that committee mark you want to just give a brief description of who all is the part of that committee um so um the larger committee it's got carol uh katie's on that committee myself tracy cyber principal good so one of the things that we one of our main goals this evening is to really come to you and designate the site that we're going to be using for the new taft middle school as you know the corporation currently owns three different sites east of 65 and we have been looking at those sites we've had those for at least 15 years maybe longer than that the board years ago looked forward and saw what was coming and and did a nice job of securing some property out there so we have some property on 231 which is about 50 acres we have another 100 acres which is what we're calling the gibson street property which is at the corner of gibson and 121st avenue and then we have another 20 acre site which is too small for a middle school as we are looking at this so as we've been going through this process we've been working with skillman and gibraltar just to kind of get some preliminary ideas of locations reviewing topography reviewing different aspects with traffic with roads and looking at the development that's coming as you guys are aware most of the projects we're doing are looking at how do we stay ahead of the curve of what's coming we anticipate literally thousands of homes to be built here in the next four to five years and we know from different areas different acreages that are being purchased right now by different groups who are designing uh subdivisions and different places for people to live that east of 65 is at least a thousand maybe it could be up to twice that many homes in the next four to five years so with that in mind looking at our population looking at what's coming trying to make sure that we are reasonable with our expectations there so we've got a couple of things we want to show you here this is not new to you you've seen this as we went through our hearings and kind of gives you the locations of our different school districts i know that this is kind of small up on the big screens but if you follow the mouse right here this is 65 coming down through and you can see that the majority of our schools all with the exception of jerry ross and winfield elementary are on the west side of 65 so with the anticipated growth that we have here we think it is prudent to look at property on the east side of 65.

it's a larger number um because we made our lease rental payment so we had our our debt so that's 1.6 of that 2.2 just to make sure you understand that okay next in your packet is the list of claims for today february 22nd 2021 and the total of the claims is one hundred eighty four thousand eleven dollars and five cents are there any questions i do not have any okay next in your packet on the financial report you will find the funds report the balance in the education fund at the end of january twenty twenty one is six hundred eighty five thousand four hundred fifteen dollars and forty dollars and thirty five cents and the total of all the banks minus the outstanding checks at the end of january 2021 is 5152 585.34 and then if you look back at your fund report on that last page you will see that the statement of the banks is in balance with the fund report and i'd like to submit these for approval okay great thank you okay and the last item on the consent agenda or personnel reports personnel reports one and two part one and two and those are both on the web page and on the door to central office so can i get an approval or a motion to approve the consent agenda this evening hello give a motion and a second to approve the consent agenda any discussion or questions you're hearing none all in favor all right all opposed motion passes next item is on the agenda is reports and the first one being from the assistant superintendent dr french hi good evening um so normally i try to provide an informative update but tonight there are just a couple of really cool things happening with our teachers so i wanted to highlight and celebrate those so first of all i would like to recognize mr doug hudson and miss jen finnerty they presented at a statewide conference recently the hoosier association of science teachers and their presentation was on designing and programming robots and it was very well received so i just wanted to make sure that we highlighted and recognized them for their presentation also each year the lilly endowment provides 100 teachers in the state of indiana with a grant and this year our very own kristen hamilton is one of the recipients and that means that this summer kristin will have the opportunity to travel to italy and explore historical landmarks and works of art from italian italian mathematicians and scientists and then she'll transfer those experiences into her classroom by incorporating her experiences and her information that she gathered into her lesson plans for her students so we're just really excited that she has this opportunity um to explore and just our teachers don't get enough of these great things just kind of perks and so we're just really proud of her and congratulations kristin [Applause] thanks dr french next is the superintendent's report mr gibney so it was a trip for the superintendent also included in that so i just have a couple of brief items this month first is the second count day for the school year took place in february and we're at 1704 students after some some data cleanup so that's down 13 from from this past fall so they will adjust our funding come november and december next is uh we will certainly honor him at a at a future meeting but brock carrington finished as a state runner-up for our green castle wrestling program and that was an amazing and outstanding accomplishment and of all years to be able to uh to make it that far and and to finish so strong we're really proud of him and just the way he not only did he persevere but also the way he represented himself our school and our in our community so um certainly appreciate that and we'll recognize him at a future meeting and then on the personnel report just a long time educator from greencastle schools with her retire with her retiring at the end of the year catholic mrs catherine dory and also a cafeteria assistant mrs morgan just like to thank them for serving the students of our school and just being being good members of our staff that's all i have for this month okay thank you next item is old business and there is no old business so that takes us to new business and the first item is an approval request for an authorization to advertise notice of a public hearing for building projects yeah so as you recall this past fall i mentioned uh to the board that i wanted to work with an architect to conduct a study of our facilities and in our buildings um in working towards a building project in our school system we have things that are at the end of life maintenance items that need to be addressed safety security educational programming type items and this is the next step to continue to move that process forward in allowing us to replace some of that debt to take care of some of those some of those needs so we're seeking approval to advertise the notice of the public hearing and that will be the march 8th and the march 15th meeting so i'm just seeking board approval to move forward with uh the notice to uh notice of those hearings i make a motion that we give notice for those meetings second okay i have a motion in a second any discussion or questions hearing none all in favor exactly all opposed motion passes next item on the agenda is an approval request for 2021 and 22 special services contracts one being with or four occupational therapy services with michelle really and and the other being physical therapy services with cornerstone pediatric rehabilitation incorporated yep so uh the hour or excuse me the hourly rate hours per week was included in your board packet and we're just seeking to continue with those relationships into next school year and so i asked the board to provide approval for those contracts kim are they working out pretty well okay good these are difficult to find professionals okay guy get a motion to approve the contracts they'll make a motion have a motion in a second all in favor all opposed motion passes next item on the agenda is the first reading of updated job descriptions for maintenance custodial services and food services yeah so i'm engaged in a a district or corporation-wide job description update we just want to seek greater clarity to responsibilities and who's in charge of what as much to communicate district-wide as anything and so these are the first uh employee groups um of eventually completing every employee group um in the corporation um you know myself included and so we're not requesting any action be taking excuse me to be taken this month these are just for your first reading i'll bring them for a second reading and adoption next month okay thank you be approved we're just reading them this time we don't yeah thanks for doing it jeff it's nice to work who's doing what good work okay last couple items on the agenda is an approval for the board resolution for public school teacher staff and administrators vaccinations yeah so i won't go into great detail because mrs hamilton did a great job of covering it but essentially this is a letter of support to governor holcomb and the legislature just we need to prioritize our school staff we've been open and remained open for the most part from the beginning of the school year and we believe it's important to uh to prioritize our school staff so just asking the board to support this resolution of course which will provide to senator bray representative baird senator crane any other legislative leaders in our area and then certainly state there were these two resolutions something we actually needed to vote on and i'm asking you yeah to vote on them and approve them um so that would be the first one right okay can i get a motion to approve the board resolution concerning administrator and staff teacher vaccinations i still move second yeah we have a motion in a second any discussion hearing none all in favor all right all opposed motion passes next item is an approval request for the resolution opposing the establishment of educational scholarship accounts and the expansion of the indiana school choice scholarship program yeah so these are two really bad bills as mrs hamilton has mentioned house bill 100 or excuse me 1005 has has cleared the house and will make its way into the senate but essentially you heard the governor tout additional funds for public schools well the expansion of school choice will eat into a lot of those dollars our public school students make up 90 of the student population in indiana and it's going to be extremely difficult to drive additional dollars to the classroom if they're expanding school choice and you know with school choice and in vouchers those schools don't aren't held to the same standard of accountability it's just not a it's not a good way to spend our taxpayer dollars and then the second item is the establishment of the education scholarship accounts and again it'll take money out of our public tax dollars out of our public schools and again many of these dollars will flow to private home schools and again there's not much monitoring of how those dollars are spent so again asking the board to support this resolution which we can we can provide those same groups of people i i just want to ask the question real quick and and um so because especially if somebody was to do this and these funds go but then the child comes back to the school that money doesn't come back right yeah so the money in our state the money follows the kid and that is one of the concerns and questions is if that if that money in its entirety goes to the kids or excuse me to go follow that student to the family and then say for instance to home school and then they all of a sudden want to come back mid-semester we're not going to see those funds and so it is going to put a it is going to make things uh tricky and difficult for us because we have to we build our budgets based on right and expected allotment of funding yeah that's that's really all i guess i guess the only other uh i don't know we need to make a motion first or if i'm free to go ahead and comment now or but i um i just want to thank jeff we asked him to let us know when things like this came up so we could contact our representatives and he make sure we know so we then contact representatives so i just wanted to thank him for that is there a way jeff that we can put these much like kristen and some of the other teachers association presidents did in the county can we we put these as letters to the editor and the banner or something to just yes absolutely i can i can share these share these with them or draw up basically put it in a letter of support absolutely okay those are two very important points yeah just i just think the lack of lack of the potential lack of transparency is is really dangerous too as we take you know schools are already strapped man and just as we you know potentially take take funds away and and take it to some place that maybe isn't as accountable um i mean that's just that's just just dangerous with with tax dollars um and and i don't really see how it helps public education at all so let's just now in fact schools with the higher you know higher levels of poverty are actually getting hit the hardest um based on the complex complexity in index so coming out of the pandemic you know is that really a time to take away more tax dollars from those students the students in schools that needed the most probably not in my opinion so these are just bad bad bills okay can i get a motion to approve this second resolution i'll make a motion i'll second we have a motion in a second any further discussion hearing that all in favor aye all opposed motion passes next item on the agenda is other business does anyone have any other business i have just a couple of questions jeff the governor talked about giving more masks and testing to local schools who apply did we do that yeah so the binax kits and masks we we take any and all supplies that they're willing to give us because those things come in handy we don't have the capacity to administer those tests um here locally place too much of a burden on our staff but we did request them and we'll be sharing those or passing those off to the health department but certainly then distributing masks absolutely and then this is just kind of a random thought for the future next year year after green castle is kind of an interesting group when it comes to snow days and a lot of green castle was pretty clear i understand the safety issue out in the country we need to make sure those kids are safe but maybe sometime we can look at snow routes or something like that four days is a lot to be gone but we want to make sure everybody's safe at the same time so yeah absolutely we can we can look into that and you know i think you'll see people make changes to learning moving moving forwards too and just trying to maintain the continuity best we can but also provide an equitable experience if we did have kids in person versus those at home but yeah that's absolutely something we can look into and work with the association on yeah i just wanted to throw i didn't i didn't comment when we were discussing the the vaccine but i we've said it um before and i just want to say again man i think everybody uh the teachers and staff and just everybody um i i think we've done a really good job you know with a with a really tough task and uh and and so i hope i hope that there's some some years opening up to the to the need to do that the the talk about opening schools and doing that widespread across the country is is something that just gets talked about and talked about and and you know it can only help to do that and so um so just you know one i hope it happens and two i hope everybody you know i hope people are talking about it and and you know it's not just just us but you know legislators and and to just reach out and talk to anybody you can to get the word out because it's it's important and you know it's just going to be a slow go without it in my opinion indeed anyone else okay no other other business last on the agenda is adjournment can i get a motion to adjourn motion okay have a motion in a second all in favor all opposed ocean passage thank you all for coming this evening and be careful going home see you in a couple of weeks you

i'm going to attempt this i'm going to attempt to make a motion that oh gosh it just um i don't know if i can just plug it in and we'll fill it in that we set the minutes um up oh let's see hold them until that matters thank you making me nervous looking at the expert at that so we have a motion by miss amaral in the second time is wait from the motion any discussion hearing on all in favor say that being said uh some good stuff that we're always here and some personally is uh nice i enjoy and that is some recognition dr giffett okay thank you mr chair so um just a little background um we are a member of the south coast educational collaborative and as such member districts are invited each year to submit a name of one of our high school students that is deserving of recognition and a scholarship as well so we did have unfortunately you had to have a virtual meeting usually it's a nice celebration with luncheon and everything else but obviously it was a virtual meeting where all of the students from the area towns were recognized so tonight i'd like to recognize mr tebow to re to then recognize our student um who was chosen by the high school and her parents are here as well so we're really happy to have them here thank you dr gifford i'd like to thank dr gifford and members of the dartmouth school committee for the opportunity to present this year's dartmouth high schools this year's recipient of the francis w galishawa memorial scholarship which is awarded annually to one student from each of the schools that make up the south coast educational collaborative and while i know from speaking with the high school principals from across the area that the scholarship is appreciated by each of the south coast schools it holds particular uh meaning to us here in dartmouth um because as those of you um you may or may not be aware the scholarship's actually named in honor of the director of technology mr galashaw's uh father who was a founding member of the south coast collaborative so the award has special uh significance to us here at dartmouth because of that connection but this year dartmouth high school is delighted to be able to recognize a student who has demonstrated not only extraordinary academic achievement but who has also demonstrated an exceptional commitment to service and leadership within the dartmouth community when considering which deserving student we might select to represent dartmouth high school for this honor each year we pay particular attention to students who have led by example in service to all students that make up the dartmouth community including those with disabilities as we hold such service in the highest esteem and believe that such service aligns well with the mission of the south coast educational collaborative gives me great pleasure to recognize maya leonato as dartmouth high school's 2020 recipient of the francis w galicia memorial scholarship maya is a most deserving recipient of this tremendous honor as an exceptionally well-rounded student who has distinguished herself as a student athlete a student artist and as a caring compassionate member of dartmouth high school committed to leaving our school a little better than she found it as a student maya has earned marks that place her in the top 10 at dartmouth high school including a tremendous record of achievement in our advanced placement program to date maya has earned two a pluses four a's and a b plus in the six ap courses she has either already completed or is currently enrolled in all while being an active member of our school's environmental club medical careers club and a leader on the girls soccer and spring track teams as a student artist maya has earned two first place and one third place award at our annual k-12 art innovation showcase which is an adjudicated which is adjudicated by practicing artists from throughout the commonwealth and has also received the tufts university scholastic silva key award in digital photography but perhaps more impressive than her exceptional academic performance is her commitment to leadership and service while i could speak for at least an hour about maya's many leadership and service achievements i will highlight just a few of them which make her deserving of today's honor maya's commitment to leadership and service include service as a mentor to our new and incoming freshman students service as the founder a community ambassador and the president of the best buddies chapter at dartmouth high school service and leadership as the class of 2021 president her freshman and sophomore year service as a member of the youth task force hours of service at gifts to give as well as a service as a bell ringer for the salvation army founder of happy feet shoe drive and founder of empower which is a website aims that aims to spread positivity through inclusivity in the commonwealth in addition to her commitment to leadership and service maya has also been recognized as miss the miss quickeshan's outstanding teen as well as miss freetown's outstanding teen for these reasons and more dartmouth high school is proud to recognize maya leonato as our recipient of the francis w galisho memorial scholarship and wish her well when she continues her education in a pursuit in the pursuit of a career as an orthodontist congratulations maya and as well to mr and mrs leonato who are joining us this evening maya would you like to say anything i'm so excited miss emeril you're quite um an incredible uh young woman um and uh you know just thank you for sort of standing out in the crowd and and moving forward and kind you know it sounds like you're quite a leader um and you know on a personal note as a parent of a young man who you know the greater community doesn't always see his gifts because he can't speak but to know that there are allies out there like you to inspire others to follow in your footsteps to recognize the gifts that people with disabilities have so i hope you continue with that and thank you um yes and maya what uh wow what a great level of accomplishment you've uh given to dartmouth high it's it's amazing i can't wait to follow your journey as you move on in the next four years i'm sure you have some decisions ahead of you um but thank you there's so many accomplishments and it's going to be it's a great path that you've led for students to follow so thank you very much and congratulations yeah maya congratulations i guess my question a couple of questions i have is number one where do you how do you fit all of that in in a 24-hour day considering maybe you can sleep a couple of hours at night that's good where are you headed to school next year you know you you will definitely do well at northeast and there is no doubt about it and just uh we want to take a moment on behalf of the committee and i know mr oliver and dr jenkins is looking in type of deal we wish you nothing but the best and congratulations and good luck as you go forward and thank you for doing what you've done it's a pleasure thanks for coming thank you for sure you know we appreciate the fact that we had to postpone from a couple of weeks ago just because of the way things went so we you know appreciate you being flexible thank you thanks thanks you're more than welcome to hang around but please probably have you know some homework to do we let you go thanks again congratulations thank you thank you [Applause] all right now to some more good stuff it's all good tonight it's all good tonight no that's as always type of deal okay dr gifford spotlight on george h potter school all right so tonight we're very happy to welcome the potter school and of course we have principal mr porter as well as the assistant um melissa mchenry and an administrator in waiting or in training as they say i guess kristin martino to present the spotlight on potter well thank you dr gifford um for inviting us this evening so and good evening and we want to thank you all for this opportunity to talk about potter school during this um very unique 2020-21 school year um as dr gifford just mentioned i'm rick porter i'm the principal of potter school i'm joined by joined here at the table with melissa mchenry melissa is our new assistant principal at potter and if you walk the halls at potter school with staff or students they would say that was the best decision that i made this year she has been a fabulous addition to our staff in addition to melissa kristen martino who is a long time first grade teacher is joining us this evening as dr gifford mentioned kristen is um getting her administrative license so this is part of her intern hours so we're certainly hoping that right now on youtube her professor is observing this because this is her formal observation so yes to the technology folks um and although kristen melissa and i are speaking tonight this presentation is a collaborative effort of the amazing staff at potter school so for years it's been said that potter school is our happy place for our entire potter community but this year we want to talk to you about how it's also our safe place for learning so since march of 2020 the covert 19 pandemic has brought challenges like no other no other time for all of us who have been involved in education so even though the pandemic has brought these very unique challenges the solutions can be found in how we react to these challenges and as we go back and turn to the philosophies of pbis which is positive behavioral intervention systems and potter schools foundation for learning has always been grounded in our pbis plan known as our potter's p to the three plan when we went to revisit the plan we realized it was grounded in ways to create a safe and effective school something we needed now more than ever we again needed to help both the children the staff to focus on positive behaviors and positive responses during these challenging times in essence we have revisited our core values school-wide consistent beliefs for all students and staff and by returning to what we know we have tried to bring a sense of normalcy and consistency during a very difficult time so that meant the values of being kind being safe and being a learner and because we are positively potter our guiding principles are pause to be kind bought pause to be safe pause to be a learner now of course the students at potter school they love the animal paw print but we really think of the other meaning of the word pause and that means to stop and think what it means to be kind what it means to be safe and how is the best way to be an effective learner so kristen's going to talk about our first principle which is pause to be kind thank you mr porter at power school we try to instill an understanding that kindness matters and have our students embrace that in a world where they can be anything be kind we greet our students every morning during their arrival and we'll share a video shortly showing this in action we hold weekly social emotional learning meetings to address student attendance student mental health concerns and to ensure that we are supporting any family that might be in crisis this year we kicked off our p to the three positive plan by holding grade level assemblies outside maintaining social distance while having some fun we hold various theme days like pausing to be a learner all day and night where we wore our pjs and had a pajama day we also had a pirate theme day because we are pausing to be safe at par school we kept the safety thing going when we applauded our essential workers by dressing like them in order to be kind to our staff we have a newly created staff relaxation area to support our staff's well-being as well here are some pictures illustrating how we greet our students in the morning to promote a positive learning environment letting them know they matter and we care and here's that video we promised showing our morning arrival greeting a student coming right off the bus good morning welcome back keep those keep those horses in between yeah good work just kathy have a great day and now over to you mrs mchenry for pause to be safe thank you kristen and good evening everyone so i'm going to talk about our second principle which is called pause to be safe and obviously this is a very important one in the times that we are in so at the beginning of the school year in conjunction with the district mr porter and i created a potter hybrid planning committee to develop the potter safety plan for our hybrid model that we shared with students staff and our families so this evening we're going to share some of those safety protocols that were part of that plan the first one is to stay six feet apart now with elementary age students this might be a challenge for them to understand what a six feet look like so if you heard in the video that we just shared we tell the students keep a horse between you or an alligator or a motorcycle and in the picture you can even see we actually have a six foot ruler that we were using in the halls to help the students visualize what keeping six feet apart actually means in addition we encourage our students to frequently wash their hands and utilize the hand sanitizer that we have before they enter a room in the school and as they exit and that includes coming in from recess and going out for recess as well and most importantly we encourage everyone to wear their mask and i'll be honest at the beginning of the school year i wondered if our students would be able to do this and i wondered if i myself could even do this but i can say that students and staff have all risen to uh the occasion and and have been great at it including our littlest learners in our preschool program who were the first students to enter our building and they kind of showed us yes it can be done next we have some safety protocols for staff so here at potter we utilize our teacher assistants as substitutes to minimize outsiders coming into the building our teacher assistants are fabulous and learning the uh teachers google classroom and how to get in and out of that so this is very successful including times when we may have some staff who unfortunately have to be quarantined and they might be working from home but we utilize the teacher assistance in the classroom to assist the students to maintain their engagement in the google classroom with the teacher at home so big shout out to our teacher assistants and to mrs sandra chika our inter uh technology integration specialist who helps with the tech piece for our uh staff so who else supports our safe school well we couldn't do it without our fabulous custodial staff so nick chamberlain jessie sanders danny da silva a huge shout out to them they are constantly on the go cleaning high touch areas disinfecting desks cleaning bathrooms multiple times a day i'd also like to give a shout out to mr chamberlain our head custodian who also assists me getting ppe particularly sanitizer wipes for example out to our classrooms and out to our teachers along with our custodial staff we could not do it without the phenomenal fabulous i could go on and on about mrs paula lassie our school nurse she meets with mr porter and i daily to update us on covet cases students who may be quarantined she also assists us when we're interviewing staff to determine close contacts and she also works very closely with the board of health so she takes care of all of us and we just couldn't do it without her the next few slides are just some examples of our safety protocols and we're starting with we're starting with a young man who never needs a reminder to make sure he grabs his hand sanitizer before getting off the bus good morning pausing to be safe hi levi have a great day and although we have always wanted visitors in our building to see the wonderful things that our staff is doing obviously we can't have visitors coming in this year here we have a video showing how we safely allow visitors into the school if they ever need to come to pick up something or drop something off for a student at potter school our office has been reconfigured so that all that come to potter can feel safe let's go inside and take a look in our entryway we now only allow one family at a time who has come into potter's school our office has been outfitted with plexiglas to keep not only our secretaries safe but our visitors as well we've also come up with a way for families to get materials for their children even though most activities are done digitally there are some very important paper and pencil activities that must be given to students when they are absent families who come by and a contactless way to get these activities for their children and this next slide shows some pictures of our fabulous custodial staff starting on the left with just jessie sanders who helps deliver lunches and breakfasts at the end of the day for our students to take home for their at-home learning days so on top of all that cleaning he's also doing that for us and here's our head custodian nick chamberlain sanitizing like he does every day the door handles multiple times throughout the day and the next slide is a video of our custodian danny de silva and what sanitizing the desks at the end of the day after school what that looks like because many people wonder what does that cleaning look like well here's what it does and now back to you mr porter thank you mrs mckenna i'd also like to add we just didn't have a picture of it but um our new cafeteria manager at potter school this year sylvia mullanson has been another amazing addition she is one delivering the lunches as well as with help from the custodial staff and also with her staff linda and renee they have also done just an amazing job um so the next principle is pause to be a learner so despite the challenges of the pandemic children are learning and we will share with you some data in just a moment our incredible staff has revisited all aspects of their own instructional model to meet children's needs during this unprecedented time as always we look at data to drive our instruction but we have to recognize that some of the data points do have an asterisk next to them as there are many variables that impact their validity this year student attendance the fidelity of interventions when staff are asked to take over other classrooms technology challenges and also the context of how we are learning this year makes comparative data less useful so the most important data point we can rely on is a teacher's professional judgment they know their students best so when deciding on intervention services we rely heavily on what the teachers seeing every day with their students all of our teachers have become technological wizards as it relates to google classroom giving families a consistent platform as it relates especially to at home learning as a district we have redesigned our specialist schedule art pe music etc so that the teachers at a grade level will have the same prep time every day to be able to collaborate with their grade level colleagues so if you walk the hallways of part of school or spend some time in our repurposed cafeteria you will see makeshift professional spaces that have been created socially distant so that teachers can engage in this level of collaboration because consistency is important we do our best to make sure that those special areas are always covered so the children have pe and health and the teacher does get the prep time a huge shout out goes out to our substitute teacher anne lacoste this year she started the year as our substitute pe teacher and she's currently our substitute health teacher also to many other staff who are wearing many different hats one example our art teacher beth nedo she works tuesday wednesday thursdays but frequently she will come in on a monday and friday to fill in for someone who happens to be out so like i said all teachers are wearing many different hats this year they're thinking outside the box because it's the best way we can keep this ship afloat for the benefit of our students many of our staff meetings this year we're using a vertical team collaboration approach so that staff can work with staff members they don't normally work with on a daily basis this has helped to promote creative solutions as it relates to at-home learning and synchronous instruction between the cohorts and as always we have become skilled pipe cleaners because we are remaining very fluid and flexible so here are some examples of our fabulous staff hot at work they have come up with creative solutions for the at-home learning they've thought of ways to bring the cohorts together and they have made student spaces warm and inviting for learning while still promoting the six foot social distancing rule and i have to say that became really evident to mrs mckendree and i before the kids came in when we took a look at the preschool classroom where three and four-year-olds are going to be we would normally have tables in learning spaces and a rug and we saw nine student desks desks that had to be adjusted to fit their little heights those teachers not just in preschool but in the other grade levels they have taken those spaces and made them look kid-friendly so it's a testament to their hard work to make the kids feel warm and invited so here's the data we were talking about so we continue to use the star data benchmarking system to track student learning now because all students k-5 participate in star benchmarking every six to eight weeks it does provide us with consistent data when tracking student progress so this particular slide shows us information on students throughout our entire school who are at or above the grade level benchmark and for students who are in need of urgent intervention so if you look at the numbers on the left in the fall star told us that we had 66 percent of our population performing at or above grade level in reading and 74 percent of our student population performing at or above grade level in math when we looked at the winter data we were hoping to see that number rise meaning more students were performing at or above grade level benchmarks as you can see in reading we saw our student population go from 66 percent to 73 of our students who are at that or above grade level and in math we saw the number increase from 74 to 82.
