so here is the current 100 acres that we own just as a couple of points of reference for you this is 117th avenue right here right up here at curves and then becomes 113th and comes back in to crown point proper to give you a little bit more of a zoomed in look the arrows here indicate this is jerry ross elementary school this is winfield elementary school so you can see here [Music] where the location is between the two of them is just straight west and almost splits the difference between them and you can see over here 65 running north and south so here is an aerial view of what that property looks like um there's currently a silo out there that is tom i just thought about gemma try and put it so you can see the screen up there i'm not sure it'll work but um that'll have to come down but then over here we've got about 10 acres of woods that has a pond nice sized pond in it we're really excited about some of the possibilities that that are there this is gibson street that comes down this is 121st avenue and then this is decatur street so again just kind of giving you uh an aerial view of it this really kind of brings it to life and shows you the possibilities of what we're really looking at gibraltar obviously their main thing is schools and designing schools and we're letting them be the experts in what that looks like we've given them the parameters that for instance we wanted to have to be able to accommodate up to 1400 students and talk through some some different things there and then through april and the early part of may we'll be working with the teachers and administrators at taft to come up with some of the things within the building for instance what's currently working really well within your school that you want to make sure is a part of the new school what are some challenges that you're facing and how can we make those better and then looking at current trends and even into the future of things that we need to make sure that we incorporate in this property so you can see here to give you an idea this spot right over here so this is on the east side of the property and it is 18 acres and is about five or six acres less than what taft currently sits on so it kind of gives you an idea of the size of the property that we've got out there and this could be a lot of different uses but you see here this will be the the school building will be designed right here to be all one level with the football stadium and track over on the west side with practice fields here a lot of green space back here right now we are looking at these fields being more what we would call physical education grade than uh event grade with the option though that they could eventually be bumped up to that tennis courts here this side of the building would be auditorium gyms and this side would be more of the educational classroom setting if you will on this side looking at ample parking around the building really excited about the uh different points of entry here having two on 121st avenue and then another one off to the side here really looking at some good options for traffic patterns for parents dropping off and then also for buses as they pick up and then looking at future opportunities here for outdoor classrooms for adventure learning challenge learning i should say and just some different opportunities there to really utilize the pond not just for taft but also for our entire corporation preschool all the way through 12th grade and some really neat opportunities that could be a part of that as well so that is the site diagram as we have right now we have weekly meetings every other week we meet with the larger committee and then on the off weeks we meet with the site development committee that's really looking at the specifics here for instance what are the possibility for the number of bus routes and how many buses would be pulling in there looking at traffic patterns looking at if we move the one of the practice fields into a certain location from another one those kind of ideas and just making sure that we have the adequate parking that we need around the building so really excited about where we are i think we're moving forward in a good spot i think that this will really meet the needs and interestingly enough a lot of the land right around this site has been purchased and subdivisions are already planned and they're getting ready to start moving dirt for infrastructure and those subdivisions right now so we weren't aware of that when we first started this process but pleased to know that that development is going to be right in that area where we expect it any questions we might have be able to answer for you guys cabinet members mark anything that i've missed that katie that you want to point out a question and i'm not overly familiar with this area it looks like a great great location very accessible which is which is exciting um very efficient for traffic flow growth all those things that we would look towards um i love the fact we're closer east of i-65 you know people from winfield families from winfield have sacrificed for a long time driving to middle school events and school and riding long bus rides and of course this will help but my question is and what i don't know is do they service city does a city service sewer and water in that location or is that something that we're discussing with the city or will need to be discussed yeah so that's a great question this is actually incorporated into the town of winfield so we went for we will be tying into city water sewer but with that we will have to do some uh pretty good improvements that are going out in that area to be able to tie in with it um last week had a meeting with skillman and the developer of one of the sub main subdivisions just north of this land and talking about that very thing to see if there are some ways that maybe we can partner and help with cost so i think that there's going to be some really good options with that there are definitely costs involved with that but we were able to build those in on the proposals that we brought to you with the projections so we feel like we're in a really good spot with being able to make the improvements out in that area but that will also then help all of the other development that's coming out as well it's coming there anyway yeah and and the other question would be the same with the roadways and that would be winfield as well if we were looking at developing roads yes and so actually the 121st avenue in on the north side there the north boundary is one of the few gravel roads that exist in lake county and actually if you go out there right now it's probably drifted shut still they don't plow it right now so we're definitely going to have to do some some work out there but at the same time we'll be able to make it exactly what we need and in partnership with the city or the town of winfield to be able to we're working right now on setting up a meeting with them uh to work through this and see what the project has talk with them about their future plans and see if there aren't some ways that we can use some of our green space even for them for different athletic little league stuff youth sports to see if there are some ways that we can utilize that property for them being a public school corporation we want our public to be able to use our facilities and uh want to go into that with the intention as we design this to make it that it's able to be used by our people yeah that's great i do you mentioned that there was a silo in the property that just reminded me of the fact that when i was a kid we had a farm property had a silo in it we had a hired man we took that silo down with yeah one of the one of the benefits that it appears is that um it's not going to be overly disruptive of with buses and why we do this and the build out of there's not a lot of housing there yet so the timing is is really good yeah we'll be able to get in there before a lot of that takes place also if you'll notice on the east side over there off of gibson street there are several homes right over there probably four or five different homes and then there's one in the south east corner of our rectangle there and we're trying to be mindful and be good neighbors of them so if you'll notice that driveway that comes out on gibson street we're making sure that that's in a location where lights aren't going to be shining at people's homes trying to the whole idea with the stadiums being over on the west side there and leaving up as many trees as we can and right now there's a pretty good tree line right there it's just a big corn bean field depending on the year right beside it but trying to make sure that the light from the fields and different things that are going on there that it's respectful of what's happening in the community as well that's great thanks gibson flows to 117 and gives you easy access off of 231 and then once 121st it's completed you'd actually have three access points of getting the property pretty easily so that's great gibson running down to 100 [Music] to 251 you have to kind of make a couple little jogs there but yes and it does run all the way up to 117th and i'm sure that people understand there's going to have to be there's already planned improvements being made on 109th right now going out to winfield and so this obviously is going to increase some traffic there but also as you head west on 121st street you can take that all the way over to iowa i believe it is and shoot right up so it will increase the the ability there to get to where you need to be on iowa which then can shoot right out on 251 as well it's nice to have enough additional land where you're not like cramming it in we're looking to figure out how it's going to fit so like i mentioned this is that additional 18 acres up here and then there's probably an additional 10 ish acres right here and again there's some water runoff possibilities here for wetlands so the site is really set up well for us and what we're going to need with drainage for parking lots and the different options there tom i thought you were going to say we need to start an ffa program out here with a silo but wasn't sure where you're going with that one [Music] i'm sure that the guys from skillman would love to have some help with it so [Music] you'll be well-rested after all that time in arizona tom so if there is anything else that's that's the update that i had for you this evening as far as taft goes and our project there are we um are we 100 sure we're going to call it taft right now that's the plan okay yep any any other questions about the tap middle school update yeah uh dr charlie want to move to 5.03 next thing i'd like to just talk with you guys a little bit is looking at our school calendar for the 21 22 school year and then also try something a little bit different for us here at crown point schools and that is to look at a two-year con or two-year calendar for the 22-23 school year as well so a couple of weeks ago we sent out a survey after going through discussion with our teachers and sent it to our staff and shared it with teachers staff members administrators and then we also sent out a survey to our parents and families as well to try and gain some information from them and we went into this really looking at a couple of guiding concepts a few guiding concepts as we prepared to look at our calendar and see if there were possibly some changes that we felt like could really benefit our students and our community one of the main guiding concepts that we literally wanted to stick with was being able to end first semester before christmas break especially impacting the high school students for a lot of different reasons part of that is to do with our dual credit courses and our university our higher ed partners and looking at their timelines with their semesters and the end dates that they have uh carrying that over into january just there were some challenges that went with that that were things that if we could change would really help us also with our advanced placement courses that we offer at the high school we offer a great deal of those and looking at the challenges there again with the timelines and then also we had several we have several students every year who graduate early at december or at the semester break and many of them want to get right into the college setting and make that transition in january and so ending before christmas break gives them that opportunity to make that transmit that transition more smoothly and and puts them in a really good position there so we looked at that along with that then we also wanted to look at the possibilities of adding a day to thanksgiving break to help ease not only our teachers and staff members but also our families who travel on thanksgiving weekend giving them that additional day and then also one to look at the possibility for fall break of having a week of fall break rather than just the two days on a friday and a monday again with the intention of helping everybody coming up right at the end of the end of the first nine ten weeks of school eleven weeks of school really giving people a break to get a chance to get away uh and come back recharged ready to enter the second nine week period so with that in mind uh brooke allen our director of communications developed a couple of different surveys one for our staff members and then one for our parents and created these questions by asking different schools around the state of indiana for samples of questions they used as they looked at modifying their calendars and so with those questions one of the questions the first question was would you be in favor of starting the school year earlier in order to be able to end the first semester before winter break and before memorial day and again we had very high numbers on those both from our staff members and also from our parents so for our staff members we had that came in at 66 percent for our parents that came in at 63 percent the second one was would you be interested in a three-day weekend or a three-day break for thanksgiving and not surprising this one came in with the highest numbers for our staff members that came in at 90 percent and for our parents that responded it came in right at 80 percent and then the final question was would you be in favor of a fall break that lasts for one week monday through friday and for our staff members we had 67 percent were in favor of that for our parents we came in at 64 so it's really interesting to see how closely aligned the two different groups were in those questions also felt really good about the number of responses we had both from staff and our parents as far as surveys go the participation numbers were very high with that so after we gathered all that information then we went back and talked with our administrative team cabinet building administrators had conversations with the teachers and really tried to look at what are some possibilities here the things that we can do based off of the guiding concepts so tonight you guys have in front of you a copy of calendars for the 21 22 school year and then also the 22-23 school year and with this one of the things we were looking at as we had asked about to our families and to our staff members about starting earlier and so in looking at adding a full week and adding an additional day for thanksgiving break we really also were challenged with how do we balance the number of days in semester one compared to semester two um so that it's not really out of sync with how many days you get in the two semesters that's always a challenge that school districts face the other part of this is and we've had some people who have said well i don't understand why we just don't go labor day to memorial day like the good old days and part of our challenge with that is because of the amount of testing that we have to do at the end of the school year and when those windows take place that are set by the state that are set by other groups that we have no control over we really need to try and get as many of our days in before those testing dates take place so a lot of this is driven by making sure that we have the number of days in for our students so in looking at this one of the challenges was we would need to move to accomplish all of those things we would need to move the start of our school year up a week so instead of it being the third week of august it would be the second week of august we're realizing of course that and having conversations with with several of you conversations that really helped as we talk through this and looking at at this point in time with it being february 22nd people having calendars set having vacations set we didn't want to impact what was happening as far as the school year goes but we still wanted to see if we could try and get as much of this accomplished as we could for the school year so our calendar that i'm bringing to you tonight for discussion would have us starting at a corresponding week to what we would have done if this had been a normal year and this is obviously not a normal year so going back and looking at other years before and that would be with having us start school the third week of august also being cognizant of the lake county fair going on right now and some of the issues with the timeline of how quickly or how close we are to that if we were to go ahead and stick with starting a teacher's first day back being on monday the 16th and students coming on the 18th and then looking at our fall break instead of it being a friday and a monday making it a wednesday thursday friday so just three days rather than the whole week for this year and then adding a day at thanksgiving break that would allow us to still end the first semester at the end of december before we went into christmas break session and would give us 81 days for first semester so the imbalance there is then second semester would have 99 days now when you look at that initially you think wow that's a pretty big difference between the number of days for the first semester and second semester but one of the things that that are that we have to point out is for our second semester is when we have to do the majority of our testing that's required from the federal regulations and then also from our state regulations and so by the time that you figure out the number of days that our students spend testing it really gets us a lot closer to being similar to that first semester dates so with this and looking at that with not moving that week up yet for the 21-22 school year what that would do then is give us an end date for our students on thursday june 2nd and for our teachers of june friday june 3rd we just feel really strongly that that's a good kind of compromise that still gets us a lot of what we are looking at and allows us to end that first semester at that time then with the intention of for that 22-23 school year [Music] bumping up the start of school to the second week of august teachers would come back on monday august 8th and students would come on wednesday august 10th giving them plenty of time we'd like to get both of these calendars out now so people can begin to prepare and plan for vacations and different things a year out and our intention then will be to continually be have two years of calendars out there at the same time so in the future coming forward as we move forward with this at this time maybe a little bit earlier in the year is rolling out what's that next school year so we're always another year out ahead of it and at that point in time then in the 22-23 school year we would look at doing that full week of fall break in october still having the three days of thanksgiving break that would then allow us to balance out our calendar or our semesters better at 86 days in the first semester and then 94 days in the second semester one of the interesting things about the 22-23 school year is how new year's lands on the calendar so the first is on a sunday which makes monday the second a national holiday so we actually had to adjust when our christmas break is there as you can see beginning break on a wednesday the 21st and going through tuesday the third with teachers coming back on the 4th on wednesday and then students coming back on the 5th on a thursday and again that's just one of those things that happens every few years as it rotates through the calendar where we've got to make that adjustment still keeping in mind all of the other things then gives us an in day the last student day is on friday may 26th and the teacher's last day then is on the 29th actually on the 30th i'm sorry right after memorial day any thoughts questions we've looked at these so often or so much that it all starts to kind of blur together um diana and i were talking about that this afternoon as we were trying to count through things and it seems like you see it so much and so much and then somebody else will look at in the first glance and be like well you left off the eighth of may the monday is just blank where's the number eight well my goodness i don't know we just get used to reading what you expect to be there so um thoughts concerns though that you guys have we took into consideration just some of the comments that we've heard um from our community from teachers from administrators conversations i've had with with some of you individually as well just to try and come up with what we feel is a pretty good compliment compromise and still puts us really in a good direction to help our students and help our teachers as well [Music] yeah so i know one of the things that we talked about is with the thursday or with thanksgiving and looking at adding that wednesday you know that's always a challenge for us because of staffing and we have people who are traveling and so a lot of absences that we have to fill as with subs on that day and it has really been positive and been received well in other districts that i've been in when we've incorporated this so that has been and with the 90 percent uh in favor of that for our staff it makes it kind of a no-brainer that that's something we really need to make sure that we do as far as ending before christmas that has been really helpful especially as the early college thing has become a much bigger deal earning dual credits has really become something that is now just not wow that's something that's neat that your school's able to provide that really has become the expectation and being able to help our students with that the idea of that fall break having a week long time has really been great for teachers it's been great for students to really when you're at that 9 10 week mark when you're about to hit the wall and you get a nice little recruit there the other benefit that comes to this as we look at our athletic programs isn't so often students who participate in spring sports don't get a week of week break during the school year because they're always in season during that time this then gives them that opportunity to have that as well so all of these things have been really well received where i've seen it in a couple of different districts and it has turned out to be really positive a good time um i'd share a couple thoughts for myself uh know thank brooke for putting the survey together brooke is something that we appreciate and not just this survey but as a board and a corporation we've kind of asked to try to get more involvement from our parents and teachers and um honestly not the particular i was a big fan of this survey i did i thought it was a very yes yes yes heavy i mean just you know speaking personally i thought it was a very you look at it and obviously yes i want that i want that i want that without really maybe understanding some of the repercussions that could come with those answers of yes but the importance is we took the effort to do a survey and get in and work down this path of communication um the fair uh i'm really happy to to see that we were able this year at least to get beyond the county fair i don't think it is a deal breaker to have school for a couple of days during the fair but i think it's very nice to avoid it so i'm happy with that um yeah i understand that the number one goal and going through some conversation that might be a little bit long-winded here but i think it's worth expressing that for myself to understand that all the reasons that dr terrell's already mentioned about getting done before the semester break it is just so important and thank you for those explanations i think for all of us to understand uh brian and i had conversations about the potential benefits of going beyond the break but i think everything we've been told trumps and we and have a good understanding why we got it we need to get it done and mr angel with the children just going through high school understands the importance of that be able to just shut it down at the break so um you know but then you want to get done before the break you're going to have to find you know things to give up on the other side for me i'm more of a i want summer to go as long as it can for the kids and the fall break i would sacrifice a couple days to get a couple to get one more of the weekends in summer um and but then you get i'm sorry i'm just recapping again what you said because it's important you go back and forth like you have this you gotta give away that to lose the spring break opportunity for the families that can't do a spring break or just the fact that i'm not sure about this but financially is it more affordable to travel in october than in march for you know to help families out so we've talked around this in circles and it's hard for me to swallow the the 22 calendar year to start the week of the 8th um i don't think i can come up with uh much reason to not support every thing that you've given us i mean if you know um if there's if there's further discussion and you find out that we can shave those three days back off of the full thanksgiving fall break and go back to the two days or or go a couple you know a day extra into the december week of the 21st or 22nd to get over the hump of the the next weekend of august i'd be all in favor for that but um i just want to you know just wanted to get that off my chest to to explain my personal thoughts and say that as much as i came after like todd what they what about this type what about that top what about this todd what about that todd everything he came back towards me with made sense so sorry about that a little bit long-winded but um explain our conversations with that yeah i would just add i think it's important to make decisions that are based on putting our students in a position to succeed you know what will help benefit them with their education and i we can't lose focus of that i mean is anybody excited about going to school in mid-august no no and my kids will probably tell me i'm the worst board member ever and i should you know be thrown off but the truth is it's it's you know they're gonna be happy when it comes to the end of may and they're off right i mean it's it's all relative speaking i do think that as a baseball player in high school i never got a spring break my family never got to get away for a vacation if you played a spring sport you didn't get away that's just the way it was in that aspect i don't think that should make a determination either but i could see from this calendar 81 days first semester 99 days second semester it makes sense to shift that calendar it just does for purposes of our students in their in their education with like you said as well said todd for for their college their school to get out uh to end it before christmas it makes sense and i believe we didn't speak about this but a lot of schools in our state uh are doing this or have done it already we're a little bit behind you know i never want to be an administration or a corporation that's afraid to make change just because we've always done it the way we've done it i don't think that should be our label we have to be willing to try and entertain new things to do the best job we can do so um this is a fair compromise i appreciate uh the administration you know the recommendation here not to do it this august because i do think that would have presented major problems uh not letting families adjust and prepare uh just out of respect and i think it was the right thing to do so i i would support this i think everybody will adjust by then and it seems to make sense from an education perspective and i would have to support that good thank you any other thoughts calendar doesn't affect you anymore it doesn't tell you based on being on the board a long time one of the main complaints sort of thing recommendations were to finish the semester before christmas break yeah and you get elected as a board member and it's to do what's best for students and then you keep everybody else involved including our teachers our administrators and then parents as part of that equation so but it starts with the students so i think by doing this we're putting what our number one goal is is putting kids first and i think this is a step in the right direction it's what everybody wanted you know that's what the parents wanted it's what the teachers wanted so why why wouldn't you do it so looks good i appreciate the time period of taking two years to get there as well you know i think it's real important to thank our our staff and our parents as well for participating you know one of the things that i heard as began this journey with all of you was we need to get input and be able to receive information and part of that is though people have to be willing to share back with you and and the numbers that we had of the participants were really really high so we feel really good about that appreciate people's willingness to share back with us thank you let's move forward to information items we have the superintendent discussion groups um and any anything that anybody would like to share i'd either senior electron point winfield just kind of open it up to brian do you have anything or no no i mean there's uh right if they've been getting do you know if they're back in a routine of uh meeting or they still they're meeting monthly they do a lot of zoom not a lot of in-person meetings and it's a lot of grant facade grant type actions there's just not a lot of activity going on right now so most of the discussions are things are not relevant to what we're doing at this point so it wouldn't impact our school system in those discussions thank you how about mr angel or hoffman any action out in the wind field or crown point area mr any activity that hoffman people could already see ms last meeting the town of winfield's willing to meet with us and i know dr terrell and those from our area are making sure that we get in contact with them now that a project location has been determined for the in the town of windfall and if i might um just as an update for you guys so katie and i met with mary grant here in crown point a couple of weeks ago just to talk with him about our upcoming projects and just to begin to build that relationship and see if there are some things that we can help them do and help us as we go through this again keeping in mind that it's for our community and trying to align what some of their goals are and a vision that they have with what we're getting ready to do as well last week katie and i and dave coulson um our director of security who used to be in cedar lake uh he helped facilitate a meeting with their town council so we were able to meet with them for right at an hour and again just kind of talk through this is what we're getting ready to do at macarthur what are things that you guys have coming up and look at some of the development options coming out there with them and then we're actually working even this afternoon we're trying to iron out some times with winfield to get with the leaders of the town there and have some conversations as well just to make sure that one we're sharing with them what our projects are what that's going to look like but then two to see if there are some win-win things that we can do for our communities that we represent here in crown point schools and as we move forward really meet the needs of our our community and our our people it's been good so far and i'm sure we'll have another good one with winfield here in the next week here yeah i i was given a little message of appreciation for the couple of meetings that you set up to see out in the community someone approached me to say it was pretty they were appreciative of the invitation to know what's going on we move forward to chief academic officer um mr hartman you're gonna take you're gonna go first and see i'll share first uh this evening mix it up um i've got three things i'd like to to share first of all is a commendation um you know child care has been a pretty stressful time this year with the changes from green to red and i just want to recognize uh the staff and i'll give names to diana for this but they've i mean they're like parents of kids that are coming in for the distance learning i mean they they are with the children trying to keep them on task they're doing all the things that that probably are happening in some of your homes to try to keep the kids uh on task with with their lessons and just just their flexibility being able to do that and uh you know we have three site leaders uh kathy kish carolyn lawson and kathy marrow and they they basically lead the seven sites that we have and then kendra days out of our office is the really the go-to person um that that they have so i just would like to commend them for the work that they have done this year it's been a different kind of a child care year for sure with that second thing kind of with the uh the project that's going on we're meeting with gibraltar regarding the technologies we look ahead last week or two weeks ago we had a meeting with principals and gibraltar's representatives and questions were posed of the principles as far as technology needs and principals had talked to teachers before that and they got some really good input tomorrow we're meeting via zoom with the principals and we actually have a presentation from gibraltar uh based on the the the needs that have been shared so we're moving forward in that to be able to identify the technologies for uh for our classrooms and we'll be phasing that in throughout the next few years as far as raising the level of the technologies that we have within our with our schools in the corporation uh the last thing i wanted to share was uh we did our first universal screening for dyslexia for kindergarten through second grade i'll give you the overall we this is based on 1674 tests screening tests that we did and 8.7 of those students are at risk of dyslexia and i think that's a key term i did not say they have dyslexia or they're dyslexic i said they are at risk those uh in this case 145 uh students their parents get a will are receiving a letter which uh is asking for consent to do a level one screen so you have a universal screener and then you identify students that are at risk and then there's another level of a screening to really get more deep into this and really you're trying to target and find out you know who really in a sense is dyslexic but at the same time you've got a number of students that have needs already and we want to make sure that we we address those i think one of the good comments that we heard from from principals you know the 145 students that are at risk they're already receiving interventions i think it was pretty much almost probably a hundred percent of these students are already in we've identified it it's just now that we have the uh the screener to maybe help us to uh to better identify and move towards the level one level two screeners and really get the students the support and help that they need so thank you very much you have any questions for me no thank you club director of elementary education mr mears thank you mr president and board members we are excited at the elementary level to be launching for the first time kindergarten pre-registration online that opens tomorrow morning and so instead of the traditional format which has had all of our families coming into our buildings on a specific date and there are lots of kind of congested areas due to covet and i think just due to the efficiency of being able to use our rds platform to conduct online pre-registration we will be able to offer that to our families and that will go live tomorrow a huge thanks to chantel pierce our data specialist who has been working with rds throughout this whole process to get us up and running also to brooke allen who has been integral in our messaging through social media through the mailer which hopefully you received at your homes and then through our updated website that our families will be able to use we want to make sure that we are drawing attention to the website so that we have kind of a one-stop shop for our families to make it easier for them when they need assistance so we are very excited and are crossing fingers that all will go well when the link goes live tomorrow so any questions about kindergarten pre-registration had went for uh registration two the previous two years and the second time you know we don't this should be online it's just i'm not kidding we joked around with the workers at the uh at timothy ball when we were there so that that's nice all it takes is a global pandemic and there you go thank you thank you for the update thanks director of secondary education mr gene fermi thank you mr president board members um i i could i'm gonna spend my time talking about crown point high school and i know a lot of you would think that i'd talk about this past weekend with all the great success we keep having in with winter sports but no i want to talk about something about academics that i think is just an amazing thing that has kind of transpired and we found out about late last week so you know every year we have students that qualify for national merit scholarship program and usually it's one or two students so just to qualify this they our students will compete with about 1.6 million juniors across the country and take the psat their junior year so they have to have a qualifying score and if their qualifying score is good enough they will get into that top three percent which is about 50 000 students then they will come back there in the fall their senior year and automatically two-thirds of those students will receive letters of commendation and they're out of the process the remaining one-third will move forward as national merit scholarship semi-finalist those semi-finalists will complete an application take a legitimate sat in october november december and then roughly sixteen thousand of those students who qualify semi-finalist 15 000 of them will move on as finalists so you're talking about students who started 1.6 million students they're in this top 1 percent of the country and this year crown point high school has nine seniors who have qualified as national merit scholarship finalist so i'm going to read their names real quick you might recognize some of them matthew bates joseph bell bailey brumbaum elizabeth leitzel abby namagada henry philbin anthony sonato jason tong and katrina valentine who i'm sure we'll get up here and talk to but next month let's keep our fingers crossed because out of those 15 000 that are in the finalist about half of them will receive scholarships so let's hope we have a few of them that have it but that's just an amazing feat mr marsnick thinks it's an all-time record but we can't confirm that so that's what i had to report maybe you get that before brooke gets that out to the papers so you got it hot off the price there so any questions or concerns that's awesome good information thanks thanks mr g for me the director of exceptional education ms pasquez good evening mr president and school board of trustees i have a story i would like to share with you i've come up to the podium each month and shared updates on inclusion and i want to share with you an experience i had last week in a conference i have already spoken to the parents and stated i would share this and they gave me permission to share this information so it was for a fifth grade student that is in our applied skills classroom at eisenhower that program wasn't previously there we moved a couple of those classrooms into town this past year the general education teacher was in the meeting and the special education teacher and the principal and the general education teacher started the meeting by saying olivia is just what we needed here they had never really had that kind of inclusion at eisenhower for the first time in her school career she's actually at her home school years past she had been bused to winfield or jerry ross she recently had a birthday party they invited her classmates they all came they didn't want to leave mom's the mom said that the girls were wanting to cancel their gymnastics lessons because they wanted to stay at olivia's party as we were meeting olivia was home for the day with some of her other classmates for quarantine and they were upstairs at that time facetiming the girls from the class they are truly friends so for me it just spoke to inclusion is so much bigger than academics it's all about the friendships the community the sense of belonging and what we've provided to that family and olivia i mean we all had chills parents were crying so i just want you to know this work although we're just beginning it it's already having such a huge impact and i want to thank cali dado jennifer meniere and jennifer chakina because without the three of those staff members pushing this it wouldn't be happening like it is so just wanted to share that good news that's awesome thank you thank you thank you and uh chief human resource officer mr akiwa thank you mr president board members just a brief comment on staffing we're at a very uh critical window right now as we start to analyze our enrollment data and a few other unique pieces of data that happen at this time every year i send an email out to all of our staff members uh asking individuals if they are interested in potentially voluntarily transferring to other buildings we're getting you know retirement letters in so there's a lot in play right now and i must say that um beyond the natural rollover of a school year that we we plan for there's there's so much more happening right now the vision of the school corporation in the wake of the audit and you know dr terrell's leadership everybody here this evening heather mark sabrina jim all the principals um putting their minds together to to not only you know re-rack our educational staff uh but package things uh hopefully in a in a little better way that'll keep moving us forward on a on a trajectory we've really not seen before and heather's really hitting the nail on the head right there improving uh all of our instructional environments and our and our culture here so exciting times i will bring to light one particular um area and that's kindergarten and thank you sabrina and all the folks that she mentioned in that effort it's no easy task to say boy hey i know you're working on this new online thing but we'd like it about a month earlier than normal um and they rose to the occasion and have it teed up and ready for tomorrow and this is very important for us because i don't know if you remember this fact there's a potential statistical phenomenon out there we're waiting to see if it shows here and that is individuals may have held their students out last year due to covet and waited an additional year before they started their children in kindergarten so we are waiting to see if in fact we might have a larger than normal kindergarten year um and this be obviously very important for us so the next few weeks are going to be very telling and things will start to really crystallize so i just want to thank everyone's effort to get us to this point where we're really starting to to see the crystal ball a little clearer so questions thank you for staying ahead of the curve okay thanks katie left she was going to a city meeting that was taking place this evening to hopefully give some input on some rezoning requests that were before the city and just with our thoughts and and concerns with that as well and just a little added on that anytime zoning issues are coming up and they're in a tif district those that don't know that's watching online that is very important to school financing and how that works with tiff dollars and allowing possible students to be in those tiff areas so thanks for ms dowling for attending and looking out for the best interest of the school corporation when it comes to decisions that are based in tiff districts so we appreciate she said is it all right if one do you want me to go and say something in two is it okay if i skip out of the end of the board meeting and i thought it was just it would behoove us for her to be there and represent our all of our interests as well so i appreciate scott your text this morning with that information again just making sure and reiterating that fact and yeah keeping that on the front side for all of us so good um so i have a few things did mary leave i'm ready okay so we see what oh okay to the same meeting i was going to introduce you to our new representative from the times who will be covering our stories mary freda is her name she's a crown point grad alum so we'll take that opportunity at another time winfield elementary update so i forwarded that to you you should have that in your email to look at and we'll be posting that online as well building is really coming along pretty exciting to see all the things that are going up out there and how that's coming to finish one of the things that is really happening right now is as you paid attention to your nes school board association as all of the bills that are in front of the legislature legislative both the house and the senate and there's a lot of different things that are coming out right now as far as funding for education and what they're looking at and at the end of this week is when all the bills have to have been crossed over from the senate to the house and from the house to the senate and then they take next week as a break and then they come back and that's when they really narrow it down they said before going into this this session there was literally thousands of bills that they were looking at this will narrow it down into the low hundreds for sure and then we'll start to see a lot of movement with that there have been school boards who have done resolutions and put out letters about different bills and what their thoughts are with that my experience and my thought with doing that is it's better to wait and see where it's where it's shaping up right now so we've got a couple of different groups that we work with here to get input and updates one is the school board association one is the superintendent's association but then also um with the growing suburban schools we have bi-weekly calls with our lobbyist who really keeps us up to date and kind of tips us off as to hey this is where we need to apply pressure at this time and so i think it would be better for us if we waited and really used our influence at a better time than doing it right before halftime if you will with that being said though if there are things that you guys would like us to do right now again let me know and we'll be more than happy to work through that with you i just think as far as an official as a board as crown point schools putting out an opinion right now or writing letters or having a resolution i think might be a little premature there's a lot of others who are doing that and i'm grateful that they are this will help us then come around with that second win but thoughts on that if you guys have any concerns or any thoughts of just regarding that house bill 1000 one zero zero one that used to be senate or the house bill 1337 or something and that was one that was looking to defund some of the school curriculum and high schools currently radio media i just find it's important that as much as we're waiting to see on when we need the so-called uh stuff in the accelerator um a lot of board members are involved in doing some scenes behind to find out who are some of the main contacts that we can reach out to so i know that was being done last week by myself when anything about defunding programs that are helping our students occurs sitting idle isn't the way to go and at least getting some additional information and through my past employment i have some connections down in the state of indiana or down here indianapolis that i've reached out to via email and phone calls just to make sure that when we know it's pretty much official that this could go through that we're in a position to act accordingly as board members and representatives of the community that might be able to just do some things that would at least uh fight for what we want to keep yeah so and that's really big with the department of workforce development and they're trying to say well these are high wage jobs well for instance one of them is cosmetology well there's a lot of people who make a pretty good living you know doing that and to defund that doesn't make a lot of sense so i think it really needs to be rather than a statewide thing more of a regional thing you know you look at our radio tv course classes that we have here and the amazing things that come out of that to say that that's not something that people can go on and it just doesn't make a lot of sense in culinary it looks like we all like to eat and yeah we are so uh we don't want anything to cause that we know you like you know you know obviously there's a shortage of teachers you know why is that and then now we're going to talk about reducing that because corporations like ourselves and others have that offering to give some other students a career path that they might not necessarily take and that doesn't make sense so especially at a time when we're talking about career paths and trying to provide different opportunities for kids and then we're going to defund some of those career paths it doesn't make a lot of sense but that's not totally untypical either so okay the last thing that i had was just a reminder for board members cabinet members of our executive session on thursday beginning at 5 at the learning center look forward to a good evening there as we begin to have training on strategic planning and what's in store for us as we move forward with that and if you guys don't bring it up i will bring up the great successes we've had over the last couple of weekends with the high school in particular but not just the high school but i figured that's probably going to be covered so i'll i'll give that to you it may there's a chance all right thank you dr carol um just before mr velasque do you have anything this evening no sir okay well we appreciate your support here and what you've been doing especially with snow removal and all that making sure that wind field i've passed out twice a week and with all the construction going on and be able to make sure people get in and out it has to be a chore in itself so to you and your staff thank you for making sure that could be done because it can't be easy i just it's got to be a nightmare i'd just like to thank my my staff the guys and gals that um and dr terrell's graciously uh providing an appreciation breakfast on wednesday for like 26 of my folks that they're tired right now i can tell you i i bought them lunch today bought them jill sasmos and they're tired it's been a rough winter in fact uh just her today it's been the worst winter temperature wise and snow wise in 12 years so i appreciate you recognizing them uh because they work really tirelessly to do everything they can to make it safe for our kids has been perfect but it's been pretty good when i drive by and i see somebody working on a sidewalk and you can't really see them because of the snow hills i don't know where they're going with it so to me that that deserves some recognition it's a good year to move to northwest indiana too [Laughter] welcome [Music] move forward uh uh item seven other business of the board of school trustees we have the 7.1 approval of the accommodation award presented to the cronkite high school latin club at the january 25th 2021 school board meeting so um assuming by reading that that we forgot to approve and take vote there so yes so just a little clerical cleanup thank you diana nice catch wow yeah um so the recommendations prove the accommodation represented the crown point high school latin club at the january 25th 2021 school board meeting do we have a motion to approve so moved second moved by mr angel second by mr babjack i'm assuming there are no questions uh all those in favor signify by saying aye aye opposed uh tom's still with us right yes okay motion curious five zero and uh um any other business that would like to make match enough i said we talked about earlier but uh just a quick comment on the location for the middle school i just want circle back to say it's really exciting um the location looks great especially considering the others it looks superior to the other choices and uh i mean gosh i mean credit to the the board and administration that was forward thinking however many years ago so i appreciate what the uh were you a part of that uh i was part acquiring that land tom was on as well i believe at that point in time and that goes boards to before us and superintendent two back too to make sure we're in a position to acquire that knowing the growth was coming remember people didn't think the growth was coming to crown point as tom could probably more uh relate to at the rate it came here and the high school was filled we've now adding another addition and a fight for that high school hindsight does and i mean making sure that that was done and once again you know a few school corporations locally got handcuffed because those boards previously didn't act and the current boards take so-called the heat and the wrap for it so in this case it crown point was put in good position by prior boards and leadership to make sure we were in a position to acquire land for situations like this any other other business that anybody would like to mention i can't think of anything myself so um let's move to board statements of appreciation recognition i'll start with mr smith thank you dave i just heard what mr akiwa said a little while ago and it just keeps ringing i just it's so exciting when you're talking about the you describe the process that we're you know across the board you know we're just taking everything out and it is it's honestly hard to keep up when i hear your story and you hear about the different programs and the child care and you hear all these different moving pieces um not just busy but doing it well you know it's going to be effective you're seeing the results of that already um by what heather shared and um and what could get us more excited than that and seeing children be impacted their lives be impacted right i mean it's just that's our dream right i mean for any teacher anybody that's in education you want to impact lives it's not just teaching so how exciting is that but i you know i i just don't you know i said it before and i'll keep reiterating it you know average is not good enough for for us and i i'm so excited when you said that it just made it reminded me it said yeah we need to keep moving keep excelling keep pushing harder so i appreciate all you guys it's hard work it's it's it's the honor to be up here watching it it really is so you guys have done a great job that goes with our teachers and our students too who have continued to adjust all year i mean you know scheduling back and forth and now we're back to four days uh at the secondary level and it just seems seamless i mean from our perspective so but i know a ton of hard work went into that so you know nothing changes that quickly um you know without a lot of hard work coming into it so i just want to continue to commend them the building leaders the teachers our students our families for continuing to adjust and work with us and all things considered it's it's it's been great this year so with that being said i i um our student athletes are just rock stars right now uh they're excelling like crazy you know it's exciting it's really well done so i took one piece of this so i'll take the swimming team and congratulate them on their success and wish them the best this week as they go down and and they compete and so we got a real opportunity to do something really cool i mean it just seems like there's success everywhere so what a blessing it is to be a part of crown point and to be part of the school system so good luck to the swim team and those individual swimmers swimming this weekend that's yeah i mean i'm going to i'm going to speak briefly about the wrestling program and how they continue to frankly dominate even at a state level but mark i appreciate you you know giving us sharing the information with the national scholars today because that's that's not stuff that we get exposed to regularly this is easy stuff that the entire community sees so for you to take the podium and discuss how a new record i believe has been set and how we've quadrupled what we typically do and that's a that's a gigantic achievement so i do appreciate that and i know the rest of the board does as well regarding the crown point wrestling program the last month has been uh nothing but exceptional and amazing they've taken home a sectional championship a regional championship then they sent um after semi-state they end up sending i believe eight was was the total and according to coach i was texting with coach hawkins uh the other day and he said that that's that's a record for crown point which they did eight last year as well so the back-to-back years of sending eight wrestlers to state is phenomenal and it puts them in a you gotta send that many to have a chance to take it so um you know the boys got down they got down to state and uh we ended up putting two two wrestlers in the championship in championship matches one at 120 and one at 138 logan frazier ended up with a second place finish which is phenomenal and then of course we know jesse mendez won his third state championship in his junior year so one more one more season left for for that young man who's you know going to probably get his pick of where he wants to go for college so but then before that we had i think it was about a month it was like right around the time of our last board meeting the um girls wrestling state championship took place and alexi westfall won in her senior year won another state championship so i believe she won as a sophomore she's placed all four years so state championship as a sophomore state championship as a senior phenomenal i see the i see the work that goes into it um i'm experiencing it now as a parent who has kids that are in middle school and in elementary school and how they participate within the youth program as well as the middle school program i mean from top to bottom that's what you have to have to develop and get these types of championships it has to start with the with kids at a very early age and the wrestling program has has done an exceptional job of doing that so congratulations to the wrestling program coach lord we'll say thank you scott uh miss randy um before i get to the girls basketball team i just like to say thanks to the community and the high school i was fortunate enough to attend both senior nights for our girls basketball players and our boys and that's cheerleaders dancers and all that and the support is just overwhelming with what they put on for them and all of our senior athletes you know moving on to college next year it's nice to see that even during a pandemic that we could still honor them for their you know performance and years of playing that sport so thank you to all those parents uh the high school for putting on those you know senior nights because they are special when it's one of your own kids and i know i went through that in prior years so thank you to all that are involved with that and then congratulations to coach cyber and the lady bulldogs i mean um i have a good friend's daughter that plays with the team so i've pretty much followed them all year been doing just a handful of games uh but all the playoff ones that are important and for those of you that weren't this week's semi-state game even though we were up six at halftime pretty much dominating the second half but that prior week in the regional final when you were down 13 to nothing to start and for those of you who don't know penn probably has two division one girls based on my experience of watching basketball play and next thing you know we were down 13 to 12 and then took the lead early in the second quarter and never looked back so true testament of a winner and a champion is when cards are stacked against you you battle back and you uh move on and they did that and congratulations to our semi-state lady bulldogs and they will play brownsburg who um in the state title game saturday night seven o'clock our time down in indianapolis don't be deceived i'm one of those kind of crazy guys that actually looks things up so i saw some video of brownsburg and even though they may have 10 losses i don't think all those girls were on the team and they might had some covet issues during the year because if you saw this team destroy the sixth ranked team in the state by 22 points in their game saturday night just don't be perceived by that record so we will allow our hands full and the best of luck to coach seibert the lady bulldogs on saturday and to an outstanding season so far but like most of us say when one of our favorite teams is playing let's let's win it all so good luck to them that's great uh is i'm sorry no that's it okay um well like i said it's nice to drive down 231 and see the marquee in front of uh wheeler right now i believe it's still there it's a great day to great day to be a bulldog proud proud day to be a bulldog so everything we spoke about tonight kind of encompasses that and um want to repeat the appreciation to miss dado and uh chikina and i i missed the last um okay yes uh i mean what a story thank you for sharing that with us and um i i like the like brian says sometimes you hear something just rings on you it's not all about academics it's about you know and we know that but to hear you say that how the child is affected is awesome um the communication that we mentioned the uh throughout the year we've been trying to be better and i think we're getting a little bit better with uh some of the board communication emails from the community that may come to the board um you know it's been a trying year with the red green and yellow and some of the some of the communication we had in the beginning wasn't so easy to talk with the other side and you know everyone be on the same page but recently some of the emails that have come through i just want to if anybody is listening to this show some appreciation towards those emails and the questions that were asked and the intent of asking them and just trying to do better for their children or their children you know their their community their school whatever might be going on and um while dealing through a couple uh mr akiba has helped so thank you but i think but mr marcinek continues to amaze me as a principal of our high school and his passion to connect with children i mean it's uh not much more needs to be said about it but i knew mr marstnik i i mean just i knew he was a great person you know um but there is no fake in his trying to when he comes in front of us and says well it's the best decision for the kids what i do for the kids just continuously proves that and uh just want to thank him for continuing to not just academically but to do a great job with developing young men and women and making sure they're on the right path uh we've had a couple incidents last month and each time has been handled incredibly well that's right um that's it for me i'd be remiss if we didn't say thank you to mr mckee back there filling in for mr bill thank you for making sure that everybody could follow at home time so we appreciate your efforts that's right mr hoffman has skipped over your laptop there i really appreciate the fact that i'm missing the worst winter we've had [Music] but secondly seriously um as you fellas know my father-in-law passed away january 24th and i would like to thank all of the volunteers whether it be in our school corporation the ymca their church their hospital students helping students my father-in-law volunteered at the phoenix airport in a group called the navigators and their job was to help people find their gates their connections their ground transportation baggage whatever it was be volunteered nearly 12 000 hours 12 000 helping people but every little bit helps somebody so i really want to thank those people who volunteer here and do it with a great deal of sincerity and i've got to tell you guys that so when we had one of our weather delays that went out at like six o'clock in the evening and we called off school the next day shortly after that phone call went off my cell phone rings and i look at it and it says tom and i'm like oh are you kidding me in arizona and i picked up the phone and i said hey i'm not sure why you're calling but if it's to rub it in that it's 80 degrees where you are at -10 here where i am this is not going to be a very pleasant conversation so he was just calling just to check and make sure things were going okay but tom we look forward to getting you back here and know your father-in-law had a great impact down there and i appreciate the impact you have here and the volunteer hours and service you provide to our community as well thank you the only other thing i would add to all the celebration for our community is the continued support of for our instance our cheerleaders they're three and oh now and sectionals regionals and semi state um our dancers and and the way that they perform is just awesome to see the way our kids support each other and come up but then also there's this older couple it's kind of crazy and they keep buying out all the fireworks stands that i do yeah shooting off fireworks when teams come back in town yeah it's just really really neat to see and uh we appreciate them and it's the scotland parents yeah bill and betty have a good time yeah have jackson fireworks that's a good combo i'm just glad he's the next police official who doesn't break his laws well it was funny the first the first night we did it my mom was all concerned because they came through at like 11 30 at night yeah and she's worried about the noise and the neighbors and then the fire trucks and cop cars all have their sirens on all the way down main street usually they kill it at the square but the whole way down i was like well don't have to worry about noise that's right it's a good time and that's better dave you ran yeah i love his number but i don't have it right now for those who want to complain but we appreciate it we appreciate the mayor's support as well and everything they do for our kids let's make it memorable well in fact that's a thank you i appreciate you bringing that up because between the mayor and dave crane the fire chief they're the ones that um i'm texting back and forth with when the girls are finishing you know giving them updates on where they are with the game and coordinating how far they are from the um hookup point for the escort and stuff like that so it's um they you know they go out of their way to get drivers there and everybody kind of pitches in so it's awesome screaming the effort it's cool all right anything else from anybody if not look for a motion to adjourn so move second moved by mr angel and saved by mr badger called in favor signify by saying aye aye opposed bush carries oh

so conversely when looking at the data on the right side of the slide you want to see that number go down meaning less children require urgent intervention meaning that they are responding to the high quality instruction and as you can see comparing fall to winter we are seeing less kids needing intensive intervention now when we drill down into that data there are always areas that we need to grow and as mentioned earlier there are a lot of variables attached to the data this year due to these times but we can say that our kids are learning they are making effective progress and we are thrilled about that and one thing that hasn't changed we strive to make learning fun despite these obvious challenges as evident in these pictures here they even are learning and all that snow we've had so we've having a good time and learning too and despite the pandemic we are keeping our potter traditions alive most important of these traditions that children await every year is the arrival of albuquerque turkey at our annual thanksgiving day assembly so albuquerque did arrive this year just with some adjustments he visited each classroom outside their windows and was able to make a virtual appearance at our online assembly later in the day as we sang his traditional entrance song and i again it's a theme i'm going to revisit but it's something that mrs mchenry and i truly believe we cannot stress just how amazing the staff has been during this exceptional year as the year has progressed our teachers recognize the importance of getting the two cohorts together beyond just morning and afternoon meeting recently most of our teachers have engaged in synchronous teaching with both cohorts in the first slide we see second grade teacher lynne pimentel teach a math lesson with her in school students along with the students learning at home okay so right now we are playing a jeopardy of the game 58 minus 10.

go ahead and solve that when you got it friends at home put your video put your um whiteboards up for me to see my friends at school put your whiteboards up for me to see is one of those map facts we learned an easy mount back to solve so mason solving it on that oh i like what you're doing you're breaking apart your numbers there mason nice all right oh looking good gavin all right looking good so what are we solving for in the second video fourth grade teachers christine oliveira along with special education teacher michelle diaz bring both their cohorts together for a review jeopardy style game four a in cohort b cohort a is on the computer while cohort b is here in class and they are solving for the problem tim bought nine giant cookies each of which cost four dollars how much money did tim spend so right now it is cohort bee's turn to answer they're do so it went back and forth i don't know if you could see it with mrs pimento but on her desk was also her laptop where she was engaging with her students there as well so by doing more synchronous teaching not only are students engaging in more instruction but we continue to build community with both cohorts coming together it has had a positive impact on learning but we are still following the safety guidelines now here's mrs martino to give some more shoutouts thank you again mr porter we'd be remiss if we didn't give a huge shout out to our potter school teaching assistant at potter school our tas are fabulous they are some of the most flexible hard-working individuals you'd ever meet they are the true unsung heroes of potter school here are just a few of them jen roulard doing a data collection activity that she actually prepared and led herself joyce braga working one-on-one with a student needing a little extra support in the hallway kim morin leading a reading group in first grade and theresa goya working one-on-one with a student as well our true unsung heroes of potter school melissa thank you kristen as mr porter discussed on a previous slide yes our students are learning and they are certainly reading and dare i say they're reading more this year than in the past despite the pandemic so our students have the opportunity to have tangible books in their hand but our district and our teachers have come up with online resources that make books available to students both during the day when they're in school and at home on their at-home learning days some of these programs include epic my on and bitmoji classroom libraries just to name a few and although we had to use our library room in at potter for a different purpose this year our fabulous library assistant mrs amy jasmine came up with a wonderful way for book borrowing to still happen in the school just this time we're bringing the books to them as opposed to them visiting the library so let's hear what mrs jasmine has to say hi i'm amy jasmine the library ta at potter and this year since the students can't come to the library we've set up a mobile book borrowing system so we can bring the library safely to them in addition our reading specialist wendy clark and kerry kagan are still able to maintain services for students who require more support in reading through small group interventions but in a safe environment in their rooms so here we have wendy clark describing how this works hello everyone welcome to the reading room my name is wendy clark i'm one of the reading specialists with carrie kagan we share a room as you can see our air filter is right here and each student has their own box to work in they all wear their masks we are six feet apart they each have their own bag with reading tools at the end of each lesson we have a certain routine where they come it's right here on the wall miss kagan has her own they have to stand over here on their colors while we clean every desk so that we're safe we have even during remote students are attending participating and progress is being made thank you for joining us and happy reading hello everyone welcome to the reading cheers again at potter our special areas continue to be places of learning safety and fun in the first video beth nedo our art teacher will describe what art looks like in a safe environment hi there this is mrs nedo here and i'm here in second grade and my friends are painting today we're having a great time together we're learning a value scale and how to create a valentine with value and we're keeping safe by maintaining our social distance we're wearing our masks and we're using disposable materials so that we can be safe all right my friends thanks for coming to visit us have a great day and the next video is a sampling of of mrs donahue's gym classes and what that looks like at potter back to you mr porter now you've heard enough from us but let's hear from some of our potter kids they can tell you the best how why potter is their safe and happy place potter school is my happy place because it's very easy to make friends here potter is my happy place because i love art and music and i love to see my teacher potter school i think power school is a happy place because there's a lot of adults to talk to and they keep everyone safe the people at night they come and they clean the whole school while we're at our houses getting comfortable and getting ready to go to bed potter school is my safe place because it's pr i am protected from strangers inside of it potter is my happiest place because i like art and i love seeing my teachers it's so cute powder school is my happy place because i can see my best friends and my favorite teachers how do we stay safe at potter school oh we plug we put our masks on we lose your hands we stand and again the real superheroes are part of school are the amazing staff that make up our village they come in each and every day during these most uncertain times because they are proud of the village in the community that we have created for our students every position that you see up there plays a vital role in the everyday lives of our kids it is these people who are making a difference and who are contributing to our happy and safe place so to end our presentation tonight we wanted you to hear from one of those amazing superheroes here is long-time potter school teacher assistant jen roulard reading one of her poems to tell you her thoughts on the importance of creating a safe and happy space for students to feel safe is to be happy to be happy is to feel safe in my eyes you can't have one without the other essential ingredients for the education of a child a necessary environment for the success of an educator to spend my day with the assurance of both is a blessing a privilege an honor it reflects my ability to teach to connect to listen to encourage to celebrate the students that surround me because their eyes are very telling expressing exuberance in an aha moment expressing calmness in the comfort of belonging expressing gratitude for being understood and expressing a never give up attitude because mistakes are part of learning here we are safe to make a mistake because here when we try we are happy and we thank you for virtually visiting fodder school this evening thank you very much very good thank you mr border miss mchenry and mrs martino i'll open it up to my colleagues mrs amaral sure great presentation you never disappoint great job kristin um for the record for your professor no i mean just great job i i love what you always do in your in your school and in the way you feel the way your students and your staff historically feel supported and and you know your long time focus on social emotional health of everyone so that to be expected it was a great presentation i loved how you pointed out that data because of course you're hearing from families who are just so concerned about their students learning because it's different and much like you know the emails we get about parents frustrated that we're that we're um in a hybrid you know model and and all of that goes into that you know we get that but um yeah it's just really just really great presentation i was wondering if there are opportunities for you and how you've gone about i don't know how many students are virtual but how you maintain some sort of connection with those families in terms of the students that chose virtual like the families that chose virtual learning for their students do they still receive newsletters and that sort of thing from you to keep to keep feeling part of the community the one thing that mrs mchenry and i do and this really it was the brainchild of katie paveo the principal dimelo we do send out in weekly uh family email newsletter jess if anything to let them know what the cohorts are for the next week and we also give them you know bits of information we we made a very conscious decision not to send that out though to the virtual learning academy students from potter just because we didn't want to confuse them but that being said we have maintained a very close relationship with the um the staff in the virtual learning academy to assist them with any students that may need additional help i know mrs mchenry has been working with our potter school pto president um to see what things we can do starting in the spring because what we're going to have to remember come september where fingers crossed things are going to be somewhat normal for those children that chose virtual this whole year they will have not been back inside a school building since march of 2020.

that is a long time so we have made a commitment to our community that we will work with them to develop some sort of protocol and how we transition back those students who chose virtual but also those students that chose to home school and for those families that had chose to go to a parochial or private school so we are working on a plan probably starting in the spring to reach out to those families now we can best support them that's really wonderful to hear that's sort of in my work circles that's what we're talking about is supporting like the process of of reintegrating and and and it's really got to be a process it does you know it's it's uh as quick as things ended in march last year you know we just have to be sensitive and and show some grace and be flexible around getting the things back into the mix we all want that but it's there's got to be a process so thank you i don't really have anything else i enjoyed your presentation thank you very much yes also thank you very much for that presentation i think for the families who are watching it just gives such great insight i think interspersing the slides along with the video was just fantastic i mean even just i hadn't seen you know someone actually cleaning a desk i mean just you know we talk about the electro you know the static sprayers but just to see it and then just to see those you know cute little testimonials at the end and i've been in your building you know you know as part of a program and it's you know it's a warm you know wonderful place to be such great energy and i think you know as i'm listening to the the certain kind of buzzwords that come up or the key words you know safe happy but um you know flexible you know you certainly are seeing so much of that you know and especially as you mentioned from the tas who are kind of coming in but everybody all the staff you know um beth nato coming in as an art teacher and the next thing you know as a uh she's a gym substitute you know and it takes a lot of um you know grace and pride in what you're trying to do together at potter to like really you know put forth that kind of commitment um and then you know having had you know kids have gone through the elementary you know consistency like you said i mean that for these kids having that stability you know to know that okay i'm not in school this day it's been confusing but you know when they come to school they're going to be graded off the bus i mean i think you showed that so well that we're going to do these same things we have these traditions that happened last year might look a little different but that's okay um i think that messaging is just so important that these kids are hearing like even if things are different they can be good different too and we can kind of make the best of this situation and seeing adults in their lives um you know mirror that i think is is really important um one question i did have as i and i'm just kind of curious as you know you were presenting the synchronous learning and i was seeing it in some of the classrooms which i think is phenomenal and i know how hard i must how hard that must be again with the littlest learners just to keep their attention and you're you're doing it with two different groups when the teachers that who are committed to that are they doing that all day are they having i'm kind of curious about how they set that up are they asking those kids to come you know who met in the morning meeting are they staying a little longer or are they coming back at a later point in the day like how is that being like orchestrated because i would imagine it's hard like sometimes to get those kids back and saying like 11 o'clock who are working at home i i think it depends and the neat thing about it is is that um our focus in the fall was really on the at-home learning so our vertical team meetings were teachers getting together to say what kind of activities are you promoting at home and we would suggest that you know if you certainly want to try some synchronous teaching with the other cohort by all means do that i think some teachers started by like you saw that review jeopardy game and that kind of way there or they started with like a science lesson that wasn't as critical for example as reading and math would be but i think the key that happened for some of our teachers the first two weeks after the christmas vacation we were remote learning and i think they saw the benefit of those kids you know being engaged every single day and also you can't imagine the amount of planning that teachers have to do for the hybrid model it seems like on the surface would be whatever i'm teaching on day a i'll teach on day b it's not because those cohorts don't stay right in sync so i think when they saw that there it got some of them like gee how can i do that but again it was organically from them so for example we have some teachers who will be meeting with their um other cohorts three times a day so they may do a lesson with both cohorts from 10 to 10 30 at 10 45 and because mrs mchenry and i set up the teacher assistance schedule it's a um one teacher system for two classrooms they actually see provided we don't need them for covering classrooms they see a teacher system a little bit more than they did in the past so then when the teacher now when they're done teaching the lesson is working with the kids in front of them the teacher assistant may go off to another part of the building with her chromebook and continue the support that those kids would need so that's one example where some of them are doing it but we have really encouraged them to what works best for you um and like for example tomorrow we have our staff meeting and that's their vertical discussion they're going to get together with teachers at other grade levels because one thing i think we noticed this year because of the social distancing we were noticing that we were almost like plotting ourselves like the first grade teachers are always together the second grade teachers there's not a lot of that interaction because there's not all that walking around so with these vertical team meetings it gives them that opportunity to hear what other grade levels are doing so i'm sure they'll share some more ideas on that as well as well yeah and i think that sounds you know again i you know another you know the vertical integration i think you know especially since we know that we're gonna well again the star testing is very positive you know i was really enthusiastic to see those numbers because again you know we've heard you know people are saying you know i and they feel with their their students that they're not progressing but to see that again the numbers are showing that there is a lot of progression in a lot of and we know there's a lot of learning but to see it in you know on paper so to speak i think is really helpful but i um i think just you know for the teachers to have those communications between grade levels again just to know what maybe the students wouldn't have covered you know is there anything that's going again to have that you know between a first grade and a third grade teacher second you know just to have that um connection is is really important right now so i do want to say with the data though i mean so though that was an example we gave you with our um kids that are at the benchmark are higher and those kids are most urgent we've looked at those two groups there okay um the data's not always that consistent across the entire um sphere of things and that's okay that's what we dive down to look at it but i think we have to remind ourselves yes our kid's learning yes they are but we're still in a pandemic and this is not the most ideal setup so what teachers are going to have to do families are going to have to do you have to readjust we can't say that kids are in a typical situation so we can't expect them to be typical learners it doesn't mean that we don't work very hard and be creative but we're going to have to have a little bit of a readjustment because this is just such an unprecedented time and i think we were thrilled that you said there is movement there is progress but it's really fair i think to put that message out too and say you know we're going to support these kids you know and then we we're we're aware of the realities and we're not going to sugarcoat it i think that's you know certainly fair and that's you know an important message so but thank you very much excellent presentation thank you not much that i not much that i can add that my colleagues haven't you know job well done and it was exciting to uh to see that yeah i agree with you know how they spray a desk and how they're cleaning and you know the the little things that go on behind the scenes type of deal with the students and the staff so my hat's off to you and mrs mchenry and mrs martino i hope your professor was watching and gives you a pluses if not let us know we'll uh let them know that uh you did a wonderful job and it should be a double a plus i agree so but thank you very much mr newman's if i can just say on the custodial front a real shout out to mr kiley because we were able to with our four-hour custodian increases hours this year to eight and that has made a big difference because that that was part of our biggest concern how would we get everything sanitized for the next day and just having him there an additional four hours has made quite a difference yeah good great so yeah mr oliver sent a text he just said to please let you know that it was a wonderful and thoughtful presentation and he's very happy to see that you are trying to keep things as normal as possible stick to your traditions etc despite the hybrid model and everything else that goes with it but i also i just like to pick up on a few things that you know again it it's not only the potter school but just throughout the district the the out-of-the-box thinking that all of the principals and the staff have had to do as we continue to be flexible and fluid as we said but the behind-the-scenes work that goes on i think this really captures it well um the daily juggle of having a substitute here there are everywhere and they've really been really really we don't have to worry about it most like more time than not we don't even think about it we look at the absentee list sometimes we'll reach out and say we're fine people have just had you know a real can-do attitude and have just dug down deep and and to get the job done it's really nice to see that the teachers are continuing to expand that synchronous learning on their own organically as you said and just some of the things that come out even throughout the district the what you've mentioned all the folks that have really dug in to really help out but the technology experts we've developed the um having a specialist schedule with pe music etc many districts i know of eliminated that completely that's how they've been able to offer more class classes and have more kids in at a time because they we decided that was important for kids to continue to have music etc and then the effort that goes into when students are quarantined to continue to support them in various ways the teachers providing extra work or putting things on their google classroom the kids remote whatever it might be they're getting it done and then lastly i just want to mention once again the focus the continuing focus on mental health of not only the students but the staff as well so um they've done a phenomenal job and as i said throughout the district we've just seen all of the folks really step up and yeah and get that done so thanks thank you thank you thank you all right next on the next on the presentations was going to be a uh discussion on the fy 22 budget with the wonderful assistant superintendent of finance and operation but um we're going to pass over on that for a second till our next meeting and speaking of that uh a you two ladies available next monday night to have a special meeting and other because what i'd like to do is what we'd like to do is it would be basically just on the budget and also we'll cover it up uh more in depth go over to update yeah does that work for you mary that's awesome yeah um probably probably yeah yeah okay in the evening though right oh yeah 6 30 normal normal time for me that'll be my first okay we'll circle back to that okay so we'll take care we'll take care of that until okay that's fine uh old business dr gifford yeah so as you mentioned um you know obviously with two of our members not being able to attend tonight we thought the budget as well as the discussion of bringing more students starting to bring more students back full time uh combining the cohorts was um a very were two very important discussions so we're going to hold those off to monday but what i will mention just so folks know and will be prepared for this in-depth discussion next week dr jenkins and mr oliver and i did me and mr kylie and we included mr misho in a meeting this week just to kind of start laying the groundwork on what might what might we be able to do to start bringing more and more students back um so without going to a lot of detail just some of the things that we're thinking of course is starting with our youngest learners um we i we always worry so much about reading especially um the skills but also the real focus on the social emotional and we all understand and recognize how much our kids are struggling um not just here everywhere so whatever we can do to start trying to create even what you just saw some normalcy even more and starting that that that um effort to bring them back we have some good things happening for us um we've seen some downward trends now with the virus and i believe dartmouth went into the yellow which is and the lumbers were very very low this last week again we'll see what happens after the holidays we're monitoring everything all the time we have i think a proven success with following safety protocols in our schools we still to this day as far as i know we have no hard evidence of transmission in our schools student to student staff to staff just it's just not there our response to cases that have happened has been very effective we quarantine when we have to we are in contact with the board of health we make good decisions and i think that's been important and kept us able to even keep our hybrid model running as effectively as is as you've seen we've run successful sports program our music program kids are out there participating etc um we obviously have things to think about that's what we're going to be more prepared but we'd like to make a plan because we'll have to look at simple things not so simple as desks because we shifted from desks to tables a long time ago now do we need more death so the inventory will have to be taken bus safety and transportation as we all know the bus the transportation guidance was changed so that elementary students there's no capacity on that but we still want to make sure there's safety going on on the buses in um classroom setups etc so i have asked the principals and again i this is um you know we will have a big discussion on monday but i just want to lay it out there that we're starting to make a plan i've asked the principals to look at the classrooms for the younger students to start slowly and we'll decide what that might look like and how we can start to get some of those kids in so like i said it's we know it's a too big of a discussion to have without two of our members here um but i want folks to know that we are planning to the best of our ability to start that we're in the conversation let's put it that way and have a draft plan in our heads that we'll talk more about next week beautiful okay thank you very much that we could possibly get mr michoad here next monday would that be possible i can i i will i will check if he can zoom in for us or i mean just for you know just for that part if we can just get his insight but i agree i think it's a great it's a really important move then yeah to have this conversation next and i know you know the vaccine thing and we have all those issues going on now we can't do them here and all but this there's a lot to consider but i just you know i think all of us and i know when we spoke to dr jenkins and mr oliver whether people uh agree on whatever protocol or process we might use i think we're all in agreement that we really need to get some kids you know we've we've got to make that effort and um but and there's just one more thing i just want just want to say you know you hear all the stuff out there that every other school is in this so that is absolutely not true i know schools have made decisions based on their size of their schools um again i just mentioned i know of some that eliminated for example phys ed and music and art teachers and made them move them to be classroom teachers so they could have more classrooms so people made the decisions that were right for their districts we're very happy with the decisions we've made we think you know we've done the everybody as you just saw has done a great job but we all understand we want we want all our kids eventually back right back yeah okay good okay um i don't really i i um i said this is gonna be yeah we're talking about this on monday anyway yeah so we can yeah i mean i don't really yeah i'll save it for monday yeah i don't really have anything i just had and we'll have more of a kind of more of a little bit of a plan of um at least some of those things that we're already planning for you know we couldn't you can't just say next week oh by the way tomorrow we're starting that's the point we want to have a plan in place which we pretty much do but um if things shift and change and we have to back off on that then one one thing i do have if you don't mind just with that said in in your planning you probably have already thought of this but of course you've got those families we all want our kids in person you know fully obviously and parents are frustrated and they can vent their frustration i understand that um but for those families who are really concerned about the health and safety and chose virtual so when once we sort of make a plan and stick with it to move in person we talked about recovery and getting back into the swing of things will those families still at least for the year be able to stay in that virtual platform absolutely and we wouldn't recommend it especially at the elementary level okay switching because the classroom's just been functioning 100 yeah so yeah yeah thank you i think this goes back to the question i asked yeah mr kylie way back if things had changed for january just for grins and giggles how much time do you need to right get the schools back going so that's you know three or four days anyway so which is fine very good okay um new business superintendent yeah i don't obviously we're on vacation so i'll only mention two things um march four i think i i sent you the links to things that are happening but two of the newer things were i'm really happy to see the tedx talks are happening um they'll start early in the morning they'll be there are youtube links for that but um you know i've attended so many here when over the years and they're just wonderful to see the kids get up there and do the job that they do so those will be virtual of course so i sent you the leaks and on those and um just the other thing the cushman uh pre-k virtual orientation is happening tomorrow night and that's on our facebook page as well it's um and on the district website the the information on that and people received it in their backpacks so those are for folks that applied for our pre-k program and um it will be taped for others that miss it anyway so that's it as i said it was vacation so back to it now back to the grind yep okay report of the chair well i wasn't planning on just a couple of things that i uh normally would have talked about if i was sitting over there uh i know fall 2 started up today oh yes sports and that type of deal so you know the football cheerleading indoor outdoor boys and girls indoor track being held outside i'm glad you mentioned that because um they uh they did do the the hockey with fans and um mr chris fully said all in all it went it went well so yep okay we'll keep trying that's it yeah you know good luck to uh good luck to those students as uh they get into this for the next two months and hopefully the weather will cooperate so they're not trying to play football in six feet of snow that type of deal also too uh believe it or not the indoor percussion and color guy shows started up uh this past saturday with their virtual shows i don't know how they went i talked with mr tonight and he said it went well so which is good good but uh other than that that's what's up there anybody have anything else nope okay thank you miss gunther do we have any other comments besides the couple that you talked about ahead of time that you had sent us no no other comments okay thank you very much okay we uh set our next meeting special meeting for next monday night that is going to entail uh just the budget and a covet 19 update and in person here in person here 6 30 type of deal and then uh we're going to be three weeks in a row because then we also have monday march 8th which is a day that the students won't be in school that day correct that's a teacher in service day that the month yeah yeah so but we'll be here awesome because they'll be here so the school will be open that type of deal so we'll have that that being said we have uh the executive session tonight has been cancelled no uh no need no need to have that anything else doctor no no i have nothing to do kylie you don't have anything good okay so with that being said the chair will entertain a motion to adjourn second move by miss amaral second by ms wait on the motion any discussion chair hearing none all in favor say aye aye aye opposed motion carries unanimously thank you very much everyone have a good evening be safe thank you oh

top of her class at cornell it was there that she met the love of her life marty ginsburg shortly after graduation they married and moved to oklahoma where marty was stationed it was there that ruth was directly affected by laws unfair to women when she became pregnant with their first child she was demoted at her position at the social security administration which was perfectly legal at the time ruth enrolled at harvard law school one of nine women in a class of 500 students some felt that women didn't deserve to be there including her dean who asked why are you here taking the place of a man ruth quietly worked hard at her studies and was the first woman to make the harvard law review she transferred to columbia law school and graduated first in her class even with all these accomplishments no law firm would hire a woman she was finally able to secure position but only after several of the male perf of her male professors vouched for her this was only one of the many injustices throughout her distinguished career while she didn't back down from a challenge she wasn't afraid of being the only woman in the room because she knew her capabilities during the 1970s while a law professor at columbia ruth bader ginsburg directed the influential women's rights project of the american civil liberties union in this position she led the fight against gender discrimination and successfully argued six landmark cases before the u.s supreme court in 1980 president carter nominated ruth bader ginsburg to the u.s court of appeals there she earned the reputation of working with conservatives and liberals alike in 1993 president clinton nominated judge ginsberg to the u.s supreme court in her rulings she considered both sides crossing party lines if necessary judge ginsburg felt that both sides of a question needed to be explored and approached cases with reason judge ginsburg acknowledged differing viewpoints at a 2009 graduation speech she spoke about affirmative action and said effective participation by members of minority groups and women in the civil life of our nation is essential if the dream of one nation indivisible is to be realized we all profit from a more diverse inclusive society understanding accommodating even celebrating our differences while pulling together for the common good her advice to that graduating class is what all students should follow she said as you leave here and proceed among life's paths try to leave tracks use the education you've received to help repair tears in your communities in other words try to leave tracks for those who follow to show them the way toward justice for all our citizens today our country is more divided than ever there is anger and ascension among our citizens our viewpoints divide family and friends neighbors and communities if we took ruth's advice what if we approach the path to equality like justice ginsburg by acknowledging the pain hurt and frustration on both sides what if we didn't shout or yell but listen to others with different viewpoints what if we came together with the common goal of equality and then just like justice ginsburg took one step at a time toward our shared goal so so little together we can do so much some of you will recognize this quote others will not this quote isn't just a group of words to me it's all of my life achievements at a young age i was diagnosed with traucoma which meant my eyes were almost always bothering me a few years later my mother died and my father decided that it was too hard to raise me and my brother jimmy hence we were sent to the tewksbury aunt's house at this time i was almost completely blind due to overcrowding and underfunding the almshouse had a high mortality rate and they ended up losing jimmy to tuberculosis within four months i was devastated but nonetheless i persevered through the dark times soon after jimmy's passing a few people took an interest in me i soon underwent multiple eye operations that eased symptoms of trachoma for short periods of time when my eyesight was a bit better i got a job as a housemaid that ended quickly due to my lack of sight when i arrived back at the um's house i soon learned about a school for the blind all of a sudden i knew what i wanted to do i wanted to get an education when i was around 14 years old a panel of commissioners came to inspect the alms house at that moment i knew that speaking to them would be the only way of achieving my goal of getting an education i followed the panel around tirelessly until they were finally done with their tour right before they left i bolstered all of my courage and told one of the commissioners that i wanted an education four months later i found myself at perkins institute for the blind when i first arrived life there was pretty rough at first i was the only one who didn't know how to read or write their name i had never owned a nightgown or a hairbrush and i certainly didn't know how to thread a needle nevertheless i was wise in the ways of the world most of my peers and some of my teachers didn't give me any grace i was straight up humiliated but as they say there's a silver lining on every cloud this feeling of humiliation drove me to be even more determined in my studies and within two years i closed all of my academic gaps i had yet another surgery on my eyes but this time it finally worked i could finally read print due to despite my near expulsions due to my sharp tongue and temper i still graduated and gave the valedictory speech i told everyone to find their own place in the world even when i myself didn't know how to do that i was afraid of the future and what it would bring when all of a sudden the opportunity of a lifetime came bounding in during the summer of 1886 i received a request to teach a young seven-year-old girl i was surprised let alone intimidated by the opportunity to teach such a young girl it took me almost a year to bolster the courage and skills i needed to go to alabama and start a new chapter in my life most of you are more familiar with the story of my student helen keller i am her teacher anne sullivan when i first began teaching helen i taught her using standardized methods and let me tell you she would have no part of it she was constantly distracted by the wonders of the outside world this should mean that i needed to switch learning styles much like the teachers of today we persevered through unconventional times we persevered through dark times using unconventional methods we switched learning styles and broke most all the rules about teaching the deafblind but we didn't care we were having fun learning miraculously in only six months helen had learned 575 words the entire braille system and multiplication tables up to five this was a wonderful start but i felt that the limited resources in alabama were limiting helen's ability to learn so we moved back to perkins institute for the blind when you first arrived there was a lot of tension between me and some of the teachers so helen and i decided to live at the school for long periods of time in alabama for long periods of time when i was around 25 years old and when helen was around 11 helen wrote a story for the perkins director's birthday this led to people thinking that she had plagiarized the story and led to many investigative interviews the whole ordeal deeply scarred both me and helen and we never returned to perkins institute our journey took us to radcliffe college where i interpreted lessons for helen making her the first deafblind student to ever graduate college six years after world war one i got helen and i got the opportunity to be advocates for the american foundation for the blind helen and i lived out the rest of my days side by side in my new york home thus i am my story with one of my own quotes the future for all of us will be tragic if we do not find a way to use the vast educational resources of this country to serve their true purpose of education truth and justice thank you good evening i'm rosie the riveter but i am more than a riveter i'm a machinist a welder a builder a foreman an electrician a construction worker a baseball player and even a soldier i represent all the women who answered our country's call to join the war effort by working when the united states entered world war ii most men were called to serve the military meanwhile the demand for airplanes ships and guns skyrocketed as the country realized that the great war was not the war to end all wars and we needed supplies to fight the ax's powers so who would fill this major labor shortage us women of course my picture was first taken in 1942 by westinghouse electric corporation to recruit women and inspire workers to do their best soon after this red evans and john chagoblio wrote a song about me which became very popular this song and poster became so inspirational that the us army decided to use it to recruit more desperately needed workers on may 29 1943 another version of me painted by norman rockwell appeared in the saturday evening post i was depicted on my lunch break at work riveting gun in my lap stepping on hitler's book minecomp squashing this nazi symbol like a bug and it worked over 19 million women joined the workforce we made over 297 000 airplanes 88 000 warships and 47 million tons of ammunition now let me tell you a bit about life before we were called to work most of us finished high school but never attended college because college was for men none of us took classes in trades or shop at high school because those were boy classes and many of us had small children at home that needed to be cared for so how did we do it we pooled our resources neighbors would take alternating shifts at the factory while trading child care responsibilities with each other one member of a group would wash clothes while another would cook meals it was a tough life but we were all fighting the ax's powers together as i have said you can always tell who the strong women are they are the ones you see building each other up instead of tearing each other down before i came on the scene women were expected to wear skirts or dresses out in public but who can run a turret lathe in a dress and heels we need to wear work clothes like jeans overalls blonde hair pulled back and heavy work boots own a headband and meant that you were rosy which was a very patriotic fashion statement despite our lack of early training we not only did it we did it better than our male predecessors production increased quality increased and safety improved with us at these jobs yet even the best of us were only paid 50 percent of what men were paid now this may sound insulting but back then we were paid on what we needed now what we are worth almost all of us were supported by men we didn't have our own houses or even bank accounts that would come much later thanks to women like ruth bader ginsburg after the war many men came home and we were laid off from our jobs factory owners and supervisors thanked us for our service and sent us back to run households now you may think this is the end of my story but it was just the beginning of an era in american history we prove that we can not only do women's jobs we can do men's we can run households work in factories manage our money work as doctors lawyers even soldiers we can do anything we want to as years passed some of us even went back to work but we all told our stories to our nieces daughters and granddaughters who became their own versions of rosies we can do it please give one more hand to ruby evelyn and reyna i had the pleasure of being at the oratorical contest and although these three are definite winners everyone there did a fantastic job and the competition was extremely difficult but thank you for representing gilbert public schools at the next level if that's where you go thanks again dr santa cruz that concludes my recognitions for this evening thank you dr mccord and just a note from me as a representative of the board it is impressive and inspiring to hear rights policy ke keb and ked are provided by the board for disposition of legitimate complaints including those involving individuals forms required for use of these policies can be obtained from the gilbert public schools website thank you kathy thorpe and then galena hello i'm kathy thorpe and i'm a parent of children in gilbert public schools grades kindergarten through second grade i am also a member of the gifted education parent council thank you to the board for being here and for giving me time to speak i'm here to talk about the needs of gifted children as you may know gifted children are generally the top 3 percent of the population and on a bell curve children with special needs are generally the bottom 3 percent of that same curve as a society we spend a lot of resources helping those children with special needs as well we should i want to point out that gifted children also have very diverse needs that deserve to be addressed i'm very appreciative that gps has formed the gifted educate education parent council to mirror the special education parent council in order to help meet those needs i appreciate the programs in place like the one at town meadows highland junior high and the schools that have alp alp teachers and cluster models the gps vision statement for gifted reads as follows gilbert public schools is a premier provider of services to pre-k through grade 12 students identified as gifted or twice exceptional using research-based instruction to address the needs of the whole child i believe that this vision is an end goal that gps is working toward and we have come a long way but we have a long way ahead of us to make this vision a complete reality i believe that gifted children deserve to have services in the primary grades they deserve to be challenged and to learn something new every day many families have left the district because these needs are not being met starting a new program or expanding the current program from town meadows to offer self-contained gifted classes to grades one through three would be one excellent way to accomplish this i also believe that all elementary schools should have training for teachers who have gifted children in their classes i know that gifted training for teachers and gifted services and curriculum varies from school to school i would like to see these items standardized across all elementary schools in the district i'm offering my help and support to aid in the further meeting the needs of gifted children please call on us at the gifted education parent council to let us know how we can be of service to the district in fulfilling the vision statement let's bolster our program and get families back from charters and other districts thank you that's the first time i'm doing it so good evening my name is galena verishagina i am a mother of two children currently in gilbert public schools and i'm an associate professor of economics at asu and the gilbert resident since 2011.

right I remember we talked about that last year but it's still the last I knew we said some IND code follow our so let me see if I can say this straight now March 9th 5:00 P pm here is our next meeting March 23rd at 6 PM two weeks after that uh will be our regular meeting here and then also April 13th at 6 pm here uh we have no revisions to the agenda so we'll hop right into the public rec recognition have a recommendation to approve the donation of 165 books estimated value of $1,600 from United Fund for Southport Elementary and Metro North Elementary pre prek and kindergarten classes also have a recommendation to approve $500 Anonymous donation for Northville Athletics recommendation to approve a $35 donation from Kathy Gman for Southwood High School prom recommendation to approve an $1,800 Grant from Early Learning Indiana comeback stronger fund supported by Lily end elment and a recommendation to approve donor's Choice grant for Mrs herrings kindergarten class at Metro North Elementary for stem materials the estimated value for for that is $372 186 and before you asked for a motion to approve all this um Mrs Mo do you want to share a little bit about the process with the uh Grant from the early learning Indiana comeback stronger fund and how um you doubled that doubled your money I know and in the fall we wrote a grant to Early Learning Indiana for little our little Norse and received I believe we wrote our grant for about ,000 and they decided to give us 20 which I have no problem sending that um and then this because we received that Grant in their round one last fall we are eligible to apply for round two funding for a grant as well um we were approved up to $99,000 for that grant funding so of course my proposal was right up to $9,000 and when we got our letter last week um our email was for awarding so we will gladly use that money um our intent is that we will purchase additional furniture and materials for our threes um so that we'll have some new things for those class rooms that are specific for little people very nice it's exciting yeah I'm move Todd we accept and everything else that was presented second a motion in second to approve all of the nominations that were previously read all in favor say I opposed okay School recognition I'll let uh Mr key Faber yeah thank you we will start with uh Mr Martin um to share his you recognitions for Shark Creek Elementary you probably saw that I highlighted them on the document is that highlight on yours yeah it's so that I can read this really little all right I didn't realize how small my phone had got we are excited at Sharp Creek because we have two robotics teams that have qualified for State uh and that state competition will be on the 6th of March it's a it's going to be a virtual competition of some type I don't know exactly likely someone else does um but we're excited as far as I'm told this is the first time sharp cre has had two teams qualify in the same year and so we'd like to recognize not only Amber and Kevin bretzman who are the coaches and these two sets of teammates so team a is Kiana bretzman kha Duba Ashlin Macy and E mckill and then also Team B Nate Hodson Preston Moore Gavin Lester brayen gidley Cole Hemingway mine Holly and Stella Ste so very pleased uh Mrs bretzman took on a new challenge with this was very willing to be a part and uh and we every time I talk to them it's just about progress they're they're really excited about progress so good for them good for the kids all right well thank you now we'll go to Mr MCD voice thank you favor um want to start by just thanking Barry Boer for all the great work he does with our students at whs um bar was recently out for about two and a half weeks with uh covid-19 and he was never hospitalized but he was in pretty bad shape for a while and not that I didn't appreciate him before appreciate him but one of the things that's really cool about Barry is U he has a way of interacting with our students that u a lot of our students are are used to at least in their mind being disrespected by adults and and Barry has a way of communicating with them that that communicates them tremendously and gives them Room to Grow Barry's just fantastic I cannot say good things about bar does a super job for us and then I wanted to recognize three students Mia W Desmond S and bton B you know sometimes I think we forget that uh you just arriving to school putting your head down and getting to work is a is a characteristic that a lot of our kids struggle with and those three kids have certainly exemplified themselves in coming toool getting their work done uh being a positive role model for the other kids around and so just wanted to recognize those three kids for some really good all right thank you very much and we switched out that is not Mrs Boon back there that's Mrs Moore so we'll have Mrs Moore from Metro North go ahead and share recognitions um we also have our two robotics team that have first and it's metr first for us we've been close in the past and have come up just a few points shy of qualifying for State um this year both of our teams will compete on the six so congratulations to James sloes Charlotte Harrington Liam King Andrew Beal meline F rer mckillop Jackson renb Cheyenne Wells Elijah Andis um a couple weeks ago it seems like months ago but I think that's because of all of our extra e-learning days in there but I had a great grand parent who babysits her great grandson after school that called me um and we had a wonderful conversation she was calling to let me know that there had been a transportation issue so then I take a deep breath and she then goes on to tell me um that her great-grandson gets off at the library stop in Rowan and Miss Wendy is the bus driver and she pulled up let kids off and that Miss Wendy had noticed that there was an odd vehicle in the parking lot there at the library and she watched as her great grandson you know went on his way what wound up being the great grandson's Grandpa yes I that right the great the grandpa who had driven down to pick him up from the bus stop but usually he walks down or great grandma walks down to pick him up but wheny watched stopped traffic and waited to make sure that that was indeed someone knew the vehicle and keeping an extra watchful eye and she um the great grandmother said you know I I know now I never have to worry he's a kindergartner so throw that in there as well um and she said I know now that I don't have to worry that he's in great Caring Hands and just was very appreciative of Lindy and all of our bus drivers do that we get calls in the afternoon can you call and make sure that so and so is home because there's not a vehicle in the driveway um they just watch those things and when it's little ones it's it's important that we know that they're going home to a safe place um also un Transportation I again it it wasn't last week but it was the week before Laris W's bus broke down near Amy and Andy eid's home and um the E's opened their home for those kids to come inside so they didn't have to sit on that cold bus and wait for a replacement vehicle to come and I had you know a first grader who's a little bit of a worrier say you know I didn't know how we were going to get to school she's in tears at met nor just didn't know how we were going to be school and what we were going to do and how we were going to miss lunch and the breakfast and and then the E came out we got to go in the house and everything was fun and so I don't when I talked with Amy I don't think she had any idea how much that little bit of hospitality meant to a six-year-old but it was everything to them I just think it's it's simple things like that but they didn't think anything of it that is important for our community Andes so um my last one is just thank you to Amy Schmidt and Erica Tyson they did an amazing job running the Wes County robotics league and without their hard work and their organization and their communication we would not have had a really a robotic season so we just really appreciate been going above and beyond the coaching duties to organize that that event it was four four Friday nights um that you know all 12 robotic teams in the county pretty much invaded s out so that they could robot and do their thing thank you thank you and I have the opportunity to go ahead and share from other principles and directors so first of all from Andrew McDaniel uh southa Junior Senior High School would like to recognize the students who auditioned for and made it to the Indiana All State Choir um all five of the students who auditioned made it to into the choir because of the pandemic the number of participants participants was reduced from 250 to 150 the southw had the most students in this area make it to the choir this area includes six counties these students are is King cage du boy Caitlyn rank Lindsay Silvers and Isabelle Davis uh the students will perform on June 4th in Carmel congrats to our students and congratulations for Mrs keford for her leadership and instruction and just to let you know typically those students who actually audition a lot of times they don't make it and so she has taught for many many years in another school district now in our school district and said this is the first time that she really remembers that all of the students who um audition actually made it so all five did so congratulations to them and then moving forward we will go to Mr Snider uh congratulations to North girls basketball team on a great season the team won the TRC section or Regional and had a tough loss of course at semi State thanks to the players and coaches and congratulations on a great season he also says congratulations to Grant Dale on TRC and sectional Championship Grant swims at the state meet and indy this Friday good luck to Grant at the state meet and congrats on a great season this is the second year that he has participated in the State uh meet basically the preliminaries are on Friday and then if he um does well then he can go ahead and uh swim on Saturday norfield excited announced that Grant Dale's work quarantine much was selected as one of the five uh American Visions nominees for this year this means that out of 1,410 Total Works entered into the region the Grant's work is one of the five best of show Works chosen to represent our region at the national level at the national level one will be selected as the American Visions medalist so Grant has a one in five chance of winning the American Division medal at Nationals Grant's work will be featured on the title wall of the ex exhibit and receive special recognition during the virtual award ceremony on February 14th which is our passed congratulations Grant and thank you art teacher Adam zel for all he has done for the support of the artist at NHS and since we have the technology here I will just show you what he did and so Grant Dale quarantine much gold key there so um as a swimmer I don't think he did that underwater I think he did our class but um very talented to do what he does uh in the pool congratulations I have some more here so that one uh NHS had two teams qualified for the Indiana Vex robotic state remote skills Championship we talked about those before but the competition will be held remotely on March 6 good luck to team members seventh grade Mason Lions Logan Lions Neil long e8th grade Hank gray Luke hper and also Conor Dillingham I still have some more uh Mrs Boon for the car program would like to recognize josanna Korn academic advisor to our car students for the extensive amount of time and organizational efforts has taken to plan IEP testing for our Juniors and seniors residing throughout the state of Indiana with the interruption of weather and covid we've been able to push forward and meet with over 100 students throughout the state and the task is not yet complete we're still rolling much of our ability uh to complete this incredible lift is due to Mrs Korn's Advanced preparation communication with every individual student and parent Guardians months this uh in advance and her ability to organize and mobilize our team to meet the task we sincerely appreciate her leadership and hard work and ensuring that students are able to meet this piece of graduation requirement so think about that doing the testing not just in our schools but traveling across the state of Indiana and she has another thing that she would like to to um mention the car program would also like to extend appr appreciation to our Juniors and seniors as well as their parents and Guardians for their time and efforts it took to participate in the IEP many of our students and parents made multiple adjustments to the work schedules and sacrificed time and finances ensure our students ared at the regional test sites throughout the state we're extremely grateful for and proud for their efforts and commitment their child's education additionally we had key community members in Johnston County and Huntington County who open their doors to our students and allowed our team to set up test sites despite the concern of Co Natalie uh failure and her team at Boys and Girls Club of Johnson County and Jan Williams at the Huntington County Youth Service Bureau have become key partners with our school district throughout the month of February to the foreseeable future by opening their doors creating exceptional testing environments and host hosting our MSD car students in their academic Pursuits much gratitude from the car team to our parents students and Regional partner Community Partners and I do know that um Jan Williams she does help us a lot with um our prevention we talk prevention for drugs um in the classroom she's the one that has organized a lot of the Elementary programs in the past so that's that Mr Boon congratulations our robotics teams a tremendous season competing for the first time in local robotics League our final competition last week is where the hardware was up for grabs the red circuit breakers fourth grade scored a first place finish in the Teamwork Challenge competition which is automatic State qualifier the circuit kns sixth grade team won the Excellence award automatic State qualifier the top overall award given to a team at a competition the great circuit breakers fifth grade won the design award given to the team that demonstrates great engineering design skills we learned yesterday that due to their High ranking in the state for the skills scores for the season the great circuit breakers and the circuit bites third grade and also earn invitations to the Vex robotic state championships this virtual event will take place on March 6 like you've heard many times tonight all four teams finished with in the top 62 teams out of nearly 175 in the state with their skills ranking we are extremely proud of their hard work determination and teamwork oriented attitudes of our all of our robotic students congratulations to our coach Mrs Erica Tyson Mrs Amy Schmidt and Mr Dan Wright as well it's great to have that many of them let me see if I missed any M North or yours I make sure I don't miss any and I think that's it Mr great to have all those recognition yeah a lot of Great accomplishments moving on to the public comment agenda items only portion I think I skipped that last time give anybody an opportunity I will say that Mrs Schmidt is watching and she wanted to thank Mrs Mo for the kind words nothing else all right we're going to move on to the con consent agenda items we need uh approval for the minutes of our last regular meeting I approve I move to approve the minutes second a motion at second to approve the minutes from our last meeting all in favor say I iOS claims Chris on page 124,000 yes that is the U that is the intercom uh systems that were updating replacing the alarm systems in all of the buildings um and that was going to be paid mostly out of the cops grant that we were awarded that $345,000 gr so that's just continued payments for the work that's been done I had one just because I'm new I had seen that the snow removal was a big ticket is it usually it's that much well it it lot depends on how much they've come in and plowed for that period of time Salt sometimes they just come and do salt just kind of depends on what Steve asked them to do and obviously this has been a very unusual year I think there was one time we spent for the whole year there was one time we spent for the whole year is almost like $70,000 in snow guess we could bring the kids in Just shovel [Music] can I move to approve claims second motion and second to accept claims all in favor say I I clst payroll not much new with payroll just some um end of winter season sport claims will start filtering [Music] through motion and second to approve payroll all fa say hi Financial summary so this is the education fund so the cash flow obviously we've only had one month of actual so this is kind of our first look at a projected amount uh through the year and obviously this is not something that's set in stone it's a fluid document that will change as information changes and um for example this current document uh reflects estimated costs based off Trends and current teacher contract obligations uh the expenses do not reflect any potential wage increase at this point in time Revenue reflects SME returns based off of past Trends uh the basic Grant revenue does reflect 2020 ADM and December special ed ADM counts uh and Carries those throughout the year so some other things that will come up that will cause some of those numbers to change uh from the revenue side is uh 202 21 February ADM count numbers uh and then next month we'll I'll have to submit an estimated ADM account uh for July through December expenditures and then we'll have the September actual ADM counts uh that will all play a role in what's factored the other thing that's important to realize and understand with this is that this is a legislation by uh bud Bud year so they'll put out a twoyear budget uh which will impact how much dollars schools will get so that could also play an impact and role on um those actuals as well I believe the house has ran one scenario of what their budget would look like for schools and it would see us seeing about a I think it was just over a $50 increase per kid so better than nothing as long as we're not going backwards the state then it will go to the Senate the Senate will make their revisions it'll go through probably a couple different times and then they'll have a final approval of what that would look like there's still time to go backwards there is to go backwards that is true you see the foolishness of the government 1.9 trillion relief under discussion and they have education in there for 2022 and 2023 I just wonder if i' ever make it here as far as what dollars make it here from the federal side yeah I A lot of times when we get federal dollars there's a lot of different restrictions and use for them our hands are a lot more tied than when they come directly from the state I doubt that will be passed on to us it'll come directly from the federal government if we were to get dollars which we are about to get a second round of care dollars um but we don't know the exact amount yet so that's education and then the other one is the operation same type of Trends there um doesn't reflect you know potential increases in uh expenses or salaries uh Revenue estimates will probably be pretty close to being um those amounts they won't be exact obviously but it'll be those will be a lot closer to Target just because we know what our tax dollars what we potentially should be receiving from our tax dollars so there's that and like I said we'll adjust that every month uh um and bring that to you guys just so you can kind of keep track of you know the ups and downs of cash flow out of those two funds any questions okay with no other questions we'll move on to Personnel under resignation we have Jenny Wilson cafeteria manager at M North Elementary and that's effective tomorrow retirement Joy edling eding I'm sorry uh teacher at Northfield effective at the end of the year Kathy steel retirement custodian at Northfield High School uh Northfield Junior High wrestling coaches Scott Pennington head coach Eric Kirtland and Ed shenfield assistant coaches Northfield coaches for the spring Brandon Baker head softball Melissa Allen Rick Brewers Jordan Scott Kyle France Gary oh and Kyle France are all assistant softball coaches Gary Hunter is a volunteer softball coach as well as Jordan Eckman Tory Schaefer head baseball coach Stan Cox assistant baseball coach Greg Tomlinson andlinger are also assistant baseball coaches Ryan sroof Junior High track Cody McClure Junior High Head Golf Aaron Shaw volunteer assistant Junior High Golf Troy bear volunteer assistant Junior High Golf was it Ty Ty I'm sorry sorry Ty Colin Daws Head Golf coach Matt bur Devon Dale assistant boys golf Brad Wright Junior High Golf Ron Houston assistant Junior High Golf Warren Dy head baseball Dalton Gentry assistant baseball Cory blocker assistant baseball Danny Lloyd assisted baseball and Zach ball assistant baseball and I'm feeling old because of one of those baseball coaches was a little leag team that I coached and if I can just mention Joy Edie we appreciate what she's done for us she hasn't been uh with us a long time she came to us from the Fort Wayne Community Schools but uh she came to us a nice job and wish her well as she retires at the end of the school year I'm SL oh okay okay we have a motion in second to approve person Allens red all in favor say I I okay reports Heartland career center mat you got anything this time yes we do uh we approved the school calendar and sometimes that's a challenge because you got five schools and they all don't find up but North Miami MSD and w are all pretty close together it's Manchester and K have different breaks and so on but it works out uh makes it tough for them to schedule they would like a state calendar for everybody any way there's no changeing it um we approved IV Tech adult industrial maintenance class at Heartland we don't charge them for space because we borrow some of their space um for those for adults so that's something if somebody in the community wants that that'll be there U they applied for Perkins Grant uh $75 to $100,000 and the idea is for a new certification for the ACT class and what they're trying to do is get a drone produ and that's pretty neat they think that drone would cost 50 Grand and they would get to learn how to drive that and it actually sprays wow um beex has one down there they showed us that that's pretty neat also next year they're going to have a basic emergency medical technician class for kids wanting to go into EMTs and stff like that so that's kind of exciting and that's it that's pretty neat stuff they get that Grant you get that other one this EMT class and they'll be much like the CDO class that superintendent report yeah I have several but they'll go pretty quickly just a covid-19 report our quarantine list as of today was um only 12 students so obviously that's much better has been Progressive progressively getting better um our new guidance of course um our county is yellow 1.0 so that means that we can have 50% in our buildings as far as uh activities um you know games things like that of course our winter season's almost over we're going to be outside um but then also 100 at a gathering so we are just still discussing things like graduation and prom and all those fun things at the end of the year for our high school students also just want to thank Cole white um he's one of our msdwc Advocates but obviously he also um oversees the superintendent of the W County highway department we've been in contact a lot the last week for some reason um but they try to do a lot of things uh and the re resources obviously are limited so I appreciate all the things and the communication he's done for us to help that out whenever we call for certain specific things um he definitely directs those other people to get where they need to be to make sure we have better situations going on so and just to give you a little update with our uh our rise programs that we have typic right now we have three classrooms we have one teacher that You' have already accepted his retirement BR misson at the end of the school year uh but we are looking at servicing our uh own MSD students and so right now we would have five students in elementary so we're going to change that program from a k to three building um I'm G start over here yeah K through yeah K through three and a four five6 make it a k through six program and then we'll continue to have a 7 through 12 program and then also along those same lines U with preschool uh just to give you an update um threeyear olds right now that have um applied uh to be south of Elementary 13 students for the four year olds we have 14 students um and then at Metro North we have 11 registered and then 37 registered for the four-year-old program and so we still have some time here through um middle of March to continue with looking at that um I learned just want to let you know that um I went ahead and signed off along with several other superintendents uh in Northeast Indiana on behalf of MSD uh to um just share our thoughts as far as not having I learn this year because of all the situations we are much um we have a better situation at MSD because we don't have as many virtual students and things like that but there's still a lot of quarantine that went on and so not that we'll make a difference but hopefully letters that have been going out to the State House hopefully will help out with that so um just to say this is not the right time we can actually give them data with our nwea most of the school districts in our study Council use that and so we can actually let them know because one reason why they want iearn is they want to know what learning loss has occurred because of covid-19 we can give them that information because we already have the data instead of using so much other testing time instead of having instruction time um and also going along with that H um house build at 10:5 which you continue to hear about pass through the house going to the Senate um uh I went ahead and talked with both legislators um house representative snow and Senator Z about um about not wanting them to vote for that um and a lot of other people have done that at some point we may want to do a resolution if I can talk to you more about that later and then just to give you an update uh for our community and for everyone our ADM count uh from Fall to Spring is up we're up 50 students um and so that's very good we appreciate that and all the work that every everybody does to make that happen um and one thing that Dr mentioned as far as different numbers we were down this year on our December count um with special education uh a lot of that has to do with the car program because of fewer students um at the beginning but anyway that's that does affect the cash flow not neily the cash flow I guess it does but it it changes what we receive from the state so that is good news there and I believe that's all I just want to some quick updates just to clarify they're going to increase it because we've got more students do they two different things here so we have we get monies for um the actual counts for September and February so that will increase but then December 1st is a special education count since those numbers were lower that will be decreased then that part of those monies will be decreased and then we also get the monies through Harland C Center and that's all based on enrollment too for first semester only though they have to enrolled in first semester anything second semester we don't get M for those okay curriculum report I just want to Echo that we have 12 robotics teams that qualify for state and that's really pretty impressive that's 12 of the 14 and uh we hosted other schools around the area who didn't have any of those and so that's off to all our coaches in this time to keep student interest and to keep pushing on on that so I'm very impressed with that um all the board members should have received something uh inviting them to March 9th our academic awards banquet so hopefully you guys can make that uh we try to alternate speakers um alumni that have gone on to do prestigious things um and we're going to double it up though so for those of you keeping track last year it was going to be Lieutenant Colonel Chris ker from Southwood um but he's having some things out going on in his life and where he's at with his job and the base and whatever that he couldn't come and so and last year of course he was going to talk but it was contr that mess um So Lisa Duncan who is now Lisa Streeter dentist downtown has accepted graciously the chance to come speak and so she'll be our guest speaker Mar and I was supposed to remind you too if you could get your rvps in possible with cash or check or money order whatever included we take cash also and that's out for the board meeting yes so March 9th 5 o'clock here 5 o' here then we will finish up and we will go to Honeywell Center Legacy Hall at 6:30 yes that's right all right so we'll move on to new business uh real short on our new business we have a recommendation to approve going to one meeting meeting each in our April April 4th will be just the uh April is the four not April 4th but April is the fourth Tuesday only um in June we go the second Tuesday only October the second Tuesday only and in December the second Tuesday as well so uh April June October and December will be one meeting per those months and really only thing different than what in the past sometimes October and December we only have one sometimes in October this year we did have two so it's really mainly just adding two more months and those are strategically placed based on different schedules not schedules but um calendar so hopefully you've had a chance to look at that I move to approve that schedule motion and second to approve the new schedule for those for months going to one meeting per those months all in favor say I I we have no unfinished business no board policy now we'll wait for a second and let it catch up for public comment for any item not just any agenda item draw back to those kind of back one the new guys are getting to they'll have training [Laughter] uh Brian Ridgeway pointed out that success build success I he's referring to our robotics teams so I think he was complimenting their success there and I'd say that's the only comment okay um no items from board members okay we're jour

insurance llc 100 from the stock tire 500 from hms metals all that for southwood high school's prom appreciate your donations all right we have a motion and a second to accept the generous donations on the paper say hi uh school recognition okay we'll go ahead and begin uh we'll do it in order as listed on our agenda so mr boone you're up thanks for having me on behalf of southwood elementary this evening and i think i'll try to go from memory again that's your key favor i think there were four recognitions that i put on our list uh um just a couple let's see last week we had two students that represented southwood elementary at the kiwanis and journal gazette spelling bees it's an annual thing fifth and sixth graders and fifth grade tristan nickim was our representative and then in sixth grade mckenna hunter was our representative mckenna was the overall um winner for sixth grade in the kiwanis b last week and so we congratulate her for that special um win and just both of them for competing and doing that for us and then let's see you have the little nights yes thank you sir uh little nights um we have it's hard to believe i think this uh finishing up our fourth year of little knights preschool this year is that correct yes yeah and um you know about a year into the journey we uh pursued the past equality uh designation for programs uh and um allowing us to provide funding opportunities that uh you know come with a path past the quality recognition and it really has a quality and we've talked about that at board meetings before but uh just a recognition of your program that they are maintaining or exceeding you know certain levels of child care education and care in general with in regards to staffing the training and the requirements and so um we did that two years ago but then just here in the last couple of weeks we were rated again and maintained our level three status so that entailed a you know a ton of documentation uh just for staffing and things that are going on in the classroom and things like that and so very proud of our staff this is drake our preschool teacher excuse me uh and then her assistants mrs carrell and ms harwood and then also mrs wright special education teacher so they were all a part of that and so we're proud of that and uh you know uh registration you know we are underway for next school year and uh looking good there so i'm excited to see you know what the next year preschool brings for our little nights programs and then wanted to i don't think the robotic season is still going to be happen when i come the next time and so i wanted to uh just share a little bit it's we're not finished yet and that just it just went away so um but uh robotics this year with coven um you know everything else is changing and that did too uh and instead of going to the like four or five competitions throughout the year where you've got 30 to 40 schools competing uh we decided to form a league of robotics teams and so southwood elementary's four teams and then also sharp creek elementary and saint bernard elementary and metro north elementary they are getting together on friday nights at southwood elementary and competing there's 12 teams in all and we've got one more week of competition and then the final the final week of competition we've got two but the final week is like our uh finals like you would have at a regular event and so through uh three competitions so far um out of the 12 placings uh our robotics teams four teams are in the top you know six spots both in the teamwork challenges and in the skills challenges and so you know kids have been great our coaches mrs tyson and mrs schmidt and mr wright leading that this year and so we're excited about robotics not sure what we're doing for the state tournament yet have heard that that's going to be all virtual and it will just be the skills competition part of robotics and so still kind of seeing what that's going to look like for us as far as robotics goes but uh very proud of our team and it's good to have just you know good to get together you know those other teams on friday nights there south of elementary and then the last thing that i'll um just mention uh every year our yearbook cover part of our package we can have a custom yearbook cover front and back and so mrs tyson our teacher uh kind of steers the uh kids uh fifth and sixth graders have the opportunity to design sixth graders do the front cover and fifth graders do the back and she has you know dozens of submissions and then what she does is narrow it down to things that are kind of our finalists and then she lets me with my artistic eye um be the final judge so uh with um kobud kind of being you know a prevalent you know a topic of discussion of course for everything we uh we did kind of a coded theme and so i've got here here is our uh cover uh avery henderson did that and so uh all sixth graders did a self portrait and so um and that's that's actually if i if i were to do a self-portrait you would not recognize me but uh if avery were here with us you could definitely see the resemblance there and then our back cover uh fifth grader miss ella cunningham uh designed that and so we've got some hand sanitizer and then i didn't share this with avery's but uh just some words that go along with the the year and the experience mask family global she threw in some activities hiking movies drawing home virus pandemic and so uh very proud of our student artists and their contributions to our 2020 21 yearbook all right thank you mr boone thank you a lot of things going on there all right mr snyder it looks like you have several things you'd like to share yeah i know last board meeting i wasn't here but we had some academic within a brainerd and some artistic with all our art students they got recognized this time since we're ending some winter sports season we have some pretty cool recognitions for some kids first of all our varsity girls basketball team won the trc outright this year and i believe that's either a share or outright four times in a row and that's a huge accomplishment for the seniors to win that four in a row and then they also have won the sectional now three times and are going to the west dell regional this saturday so we wish them luck and the next one goes along with basketball too emma hoover and kirsten stout just yesterday signed their letters of intent to continue their education and basketball at trying university so those two off that team so there's three college players already out of the senior girls that are um going on with scholarships and things so that's pretty special for a school our size on one team to have that many and probably some still in progress that are making decisions uh i want to thank mr ed shenafield this is his even though he's a southwood grad we didn't hold that against you but he did a great job stepping up uh he retired from the military saw that we had a wrestling position open and we talked to him and he just has done an awesome job he is great with the kids the kids have loved the work he's helped coach college before and of course he's done a little bit of wrestling in and out of life different parts of his life and he was great we were looking for somebody we didn't know who um and ed stepped up and was interested and he has just been a great coach from everything i've heard this year and we've had they placed seventh as a team in the trc they had wrestlers win at sectional and qualify for regional those seniors that went to regional were ethan galbraith logan cox micah higgins and they were all seniors and then junior jaden goshert and then out of that regional we have two wrestlers going to semi state on saturday and that would be jaden goshert as a junior and micah higgins senior so we're really proud of those two guys in addition to our lady norrish the basketball team and then we also want to congratulate grant dale he won the trc championship for swimming in the 53 and in the 100 baxter at both events and then he was able to set a new trc record in the backstroke because he beat his own time from last year so grant did an awesome job swimming this year and representing northfield so between the wrestling and the swimming and the basketball we had we still have kids that have opportunities to move on and even begin on this week so we wish them honor thank you mr schneider and there's a few more of course uh we have a couple principles to come and mr mcgivern i don't know if you want to share if you had anything or you just didn't have anything okay you're just observing tonight so yeah all right so mr mcdaniel he mentioned this southward in markville both north of high school at southern high school received an ihs double a exemplary behavior notification said i wanted to report to the ihsaa and their respective schools that both teams played hard and with great sportsmanship in the first round of the girls sectional play is it is great to work for both teams and exhibit great sportsmanship and tournament play and that's from official justin paul and moving down here mr martin at sharp creek when we congratulate fifth grader colin beal who was the winner of the walrus county journal gazette spelling bee in kiwanis spelling bee which actually mr rooney also mentioned for southwood so great job colin and good luck as you move on to the next competition level and then we have i think one more um mrs moore at metro north elementary says since november 10th our metro north third graders have been participating in indiana's lead to the final four a program sponsored by the ncaa and indiana sports corporation that encourages and inspires third graders across our state to read the main event is engaging bracketing reading competition using lion the read to the final four bracket was released this morning recognizing the top 64 schools with over 300 schools participating metro north was proud to see that our third graders were not only in the top 68 schools across the state but our 45 558 minutes of reading earned us the number congratulations to metro north for all their reasons so mr daisy i believe that's all the recognition for tonight all right so move on to the consent agenda items i need a motion and second for the approval of our minutes from the last meeting on january 26th i will take step second we have a motion and a second to approve the minutes from our last meeting all in favor say aye next moving on is claims payroll looks like a fairly normal one we'll start seeing on the future ones next couple probably some eca stuff as winter sports is ending second motion a second to approve payroll all favors out okay financial summary this one doesn't show up but i don't know if yours does i put a little red mark [Laughter] on that self-insurance any questions all right and we'll move on to personnel uh kind of a short list under personnel uh resignations trisha parton cook sharp creek elementary and idris clinton south bus rider and then south wood spring coaches junior high track for tommy boone jeff hobson nick perlick high school track assistant larry vaughan david marks high school track assistant carrie hamill logan paris high school track assistants and heather hayden high school track head coach clay target lead coaches we're going to start that up again jeff springer steve piner and donald peterson are all listed for play target league coaches and i just want to make one though the one that's highlighted it's really a retirement idris is retiring so we just want to really thank her for her service she's done many years wanting to continue on but circumstances prevented some of that so just thank her for her many years of service usually when they retire we ask them to find a replacement she hasn't yet so anybody in the room that's interested in melissa well she found you oh yeah so see melissa ball and we can continue to look at hiring more bus drivers i think that's across the state of indiana across our nation so we are looking at other types of incentives and different things like that because it's obviously much needed so we can get our children to our schools mike what do you guess i was how long 25 years because i know amber has a bus driving for amber growing up yeah we can't talk about ages [Laughter] thank her for all her service and always been pleasant and um being a safe driver which is very good everybody yeah just a couple of things here real quickly uh first of all just to let you know we unfortunately we continue to talk about the coronavirus and our cue list though but today tim runs that every day for us and i put it on a little chart but it's nice to see how if we do a line graph or however we do a bar graph but anyway today was only seven students so again just a reminder when we say seven students that would be either positive students that have a positive case those that have been close contacts those that are close contacts from a home situation so school and home and the fourth way would obviously be those that have covered like symptoms so only seven in the whole district that's that's tremendous that's good as far as active cases right now we have one staff and two students and as you know the new guidance as far as the quarantine process we have initiated that that started really monday but we weren't school monday so it starts tuesday so again we're a mask staying at least three feet apart and if it happens in the classroom where there's a positive it's close contact we do not have to quarantine and that's based on the new guidelines from the state department of health so we're glad that they looked at some of that data that we continue to give to them to be able to follow through with that that can always change back and do something different for right now it's good heard some rumors that our county might be even going lower tomorrow at noon when that that data comes out so we've been very fortunate in walt bush county just to mention there's a lot of lobbying groups there's a lot of advocacy groups when we talk about legislation the big bill out there right now house bill 1005 there's a lot of things in that that doesn't really favor public education and there are some school boards that actually have written resolutions or written letters that's something that we could do too but we we have in the past i've shared that with you but we are a part of a group that's an advocacy group that's down lobbying for some of these issues and that's just one that really could it's costing a lot of money that can be taken away from public education but we're still watching a lot of different things with with legislation so just want to mention that if you want to talk to me more about that later you can it's house bill 105 that's all i have for tonight curriculum report mr drew yeah uh first in the facebook comments cheryl rozier piped in and said that uh idris has been driving for 30 plus years and several people congratulated northfield and they got lots of hearts i don't really know how to translate that [Music] that's right that's right i did want to share with the board our nwa data and so what you're looking at is a student's growth from when they first came to school in august to january and the target is in the diamonds and nwa of course is a nationwide exam and so you're talking about a large population of students that put that together and so essentially what they'll do is um they'll take a student where they scored in august and they'll say generally speaking they should grow x number of points between august and january and so you can see there in math like look at the third grade there the third grade in math a typical student would have grown about two points uh in their score and so generally speaking of math we've done very well in that growth in reading again we've done very very well with that growth we see a little bit with the second grade and so um principals are made aware of that the teachers are made aware of that and they'll work on an individual basis to bring those up but as i look at it from a district level i feel like the growth we're seeing with students that we have is very very strong obviously we don't want to be just at the 50th percentile so we would like to see that growth be above all those diamonds and that includes students who come at us from the bottom end of the academic scale who kind of struggle in school and the high-end kids it factors all of those in so i feel like if you're going to ask and impress me as to why we've done so well it's because we've had so many kids in school having them there with the teachers with the title and services with all of that support really makes a huge difference and so um so anyway that's generally what what you see there i'm hoping for any questions or any anything more even more about that so we'll run that apart again in the spring and then we'll compare we compare from years past we compare all across those different things and use that to engage our programming and our plans but again i feel like our growth from the fall to the winter has has been very good especially in this challenging year so you will do that three times yep uh we do it three times and you might notice there's some funky grades in there nba has a k to two test and a three to five set like it just kind of looks weird um but yeah we'll run that three times in grades k through six is there any correlation with like a certain grade level like a second grade has had more quarantined or left out because that is a great question we have some of that data and actually second grade has been one of the ones with a lot of virtual students um and virtual is our students who chose to stay home and then come back and so um you gotta think let's just choose a second grader there like in the spring they were quarantined because we closed down in march right so they missed the second part of their first grade year and if they were virtual this followed they missed the fall instruction so um that's a good question because we talked about that but i want to remind you though too and mr drake uh we've said this before but right now of our traditional students there are 26 students that are virtual and in this area that's very very low now we had 118 from the very beginning so when we talk about those second grade so hopefully we'll see that bump up because now most of those students are back in school do you see a drop off from the ones that do virtual how do they do we do not if they stay virtual we did not bring them to the test and so what you'll see there are only kids that are here with us for the testing but it doesn't hit the quarantined kids right so yeah thank you any questions all right we'll move on to new business we have a recommendation to approve the continuation of using the food to school purchasing cooperative for 2021 2022 and i'll let you speak to that he's going to go ahead and read that yeah let's read every page word for word uh we've been a part of the food to school co-op for the third year now this is just a standard we have to approve those vendors such as the hps the prairie farms and the aunt millie's bakery as those are what the co-op has decided to purchase from and so this is just a yearly agreement then that we do typically renewal every year based off the recommendations from the co-op and you can see how many schools are part of the co-op which gives us a lot of buying power with those types of numbers on the last page which is the the page that you'll sign it just kind of gives you a breakdown of of what is involved there you don't have to go through every single page but it just gives you a little bit of background on that last page the signed page and so our recommendation would be to continue purchasing with the food to school cooperative i'm just curious on that do they set the menus who said submit uh our food service director our food service director and cafeteria managers order from that yep and it's generally cheaper than us having to go and just find it here i moved to the school purchase motion in a second to approve the recommendation to keep using food school purchasing cooperative uh for next year all in favor say hi also in our new business recommendation to approve a field trip to swiss valley ski resort in jones michigan for north field advanced speaking class on february 22nd second ocean and second to approval field trip to swiss valley northfield all in favor say hi hi folks we have no unfinished business or work policy this time i will stop over the public comments since it sounds like we are still able to facebook live and so if there's anybody manually i'm getting tired no got arrested we'll just start calling you tripod yeah i could go that could go a bad way debbie smith says um she says to northfield a way to go norfolk girls so proud of you uh way to go boys and wrestling assuming so proud of all of our schools excuse me and she says jay is a super principal and deserves the kudos and that's all the comments we have okay so we'll move on items from board members all right as far as i did not

2021-02-24 Maricopa County, AZ YouTube / Gilbert Public Schools transcript source: youtube Gilbert Public Schools District Board Meeting 02/23/2021 · passage 2
last week i sent a letter to the gps board advocating for the extension of the self-contained gifted program to younger grades 20 other parents signed this letter and tonight two of us decided to come over and speak and explain why we need such a program as needed so thank you so much for giving us such an opportunity um 10 years ago our family was looking for a long-term home and eventually we decided to settle in gilbert to a large extent because of all the opportunities it offers to families including its excellent schools but we were very surprised when our daughter started kindergarten in a few months we started seeing warning signs so liz who was always eager to earn would come home and say that school is not exciting that it's too easy and that you'd rather learn at home so in a couple of months later she was formally tested as gifted and her teacher really went out of her way to try to help and engage her in class and challenge her and we're very very grateful for this but looking forward we were concerned about the future we were not sure whether the cluster model would be able to meet her needs academically and probably even more important socially so imagine a child who is being consistently asked to do an alternative assignment or is being asked to sit and read in the corner which often happens to academically advanced children so we were not sure that we really wanted our daughter to be in that situation so based on our experience and the experiences of many parents we talked to we knew that please would not be able to thrive within the cluster model that the vista lakes elementary had to offer and we started looking for other options it turns out that outside of the gps many districts at schools offer self-contained gifted programs starting from early grades and we ended up transferring lists to a sentence charter school where we saw her thrive academically socially and emotionally in there at least a third of the families were the families residing in gps district that chose to move to a different school because gilbert public schools could not offer to their children what their children needed and over time i came to meet at least 20 other families who did exactly the same so i believe that expanding self-contained gifted program to younger grades will help align the gps gifted education with its vision of being a premier provider of gifted services and will help retain students in the district which ultimately will be financially beneficial so i hope the board will consider the possibility of doing it and the great first step would be to serve the gps families and the families in the neighboring districts to assess the demand for such a program so thank you for giving an opportunity to speak i'm looking forward to continuing this conversation and hope that the board will support this initiative thank you next we have four speakers the topic is mask wearing nicole gutierrez lindsey stevens milana with the laura and hannah silby we'll start with nicole hello my name is nicole gutierrez and i'm a senior at highland high school i'm gonna tell you my experience about covid and how i got it and how it affected me and my family so my dad and i both got it around the same time uh it was in january and i had gotten a covert exposure in my math class um we were told the quarantine but we thought it would just be one of those kind of it's a cold that type of stuff we are uh like very heavy on wearing our masks and stuff and i don't really take it off i took it off to take a sip of water i was wrong about how i wasn't going to put my family in danger or anything so no one in that class wears masks at all if they do it's under their chin or under their nose being in that class which isn't available online along with a lot of my other classes has put on not only me but my family in grave danger my father is a type 2 diabetic and my mother is severely asthmatic i am mildly asthmatic and my grandmother who lives with us has medical issues such as hypertension type 1 diabetes and heart issues along with possible cancer being in this class i brought the deadly virus to my house i gave it to my father first he thought he had a normal cold and it got so bad until he couldn't breathe and was terrified and had to go to the hospital he ended up on a heavy breathing tube pushing too sorry tube pushing 90 percent of oxygen into his lungs that did not work he had to go on to a ventilator which he was there for around 15 days he was scared for his life that he would never be able to see us again before we got off the ventilator we called him he let me know not to blame myself for anything that happened i fell into a depression and i was thinking i'm causing my own father to die i immediately broke down into all the type of attacks you could imagine anxiety panic and more uh i was the reason my father was at death's door him being diabetic also didn't help as it attacked him more since his immune system was already weakened there is not a second i don't blame myself for his sickness not only did he get coveted but he got coba pneumonia since the coronavirus main target is for the lungs and the immune system it's really dangerous for me now to go home after school because people do not demonstrate about caring about others at my school when i had covet i was asymptomatic but i did end up also getting pneumonia and bronchitis mixed together i missed school for a month and that's and i'm in a lot of ap classes um from one mask being not being worn you can hurt a lot of other people around you one person in my classrooms can get six other people sick since it's like the setup of it um i'm scared to go home now as i still have a risk of bringing it home as the second strain so my message would just be like us students who have people we care about need others to have and i know you can't teach this human decency or even how to wear masks properly because one aerosol can ruin another's life thank you thank you lindsay hi my name is lindsay stevens and i'm a senior at highland high school thank you so much for your time tonight and for allowing us to use your voices as you taught us back in august we were promised a safe learning environment one with mask wearing social distancing and if we met criteria um being an infection rate of five to seven percent when we came back to school this past january the infection rate was 23 percent and oh i have some photo evidence not going to show it but i'll show you guys later this pandemic has worn away at many things in our lives for some of us the cancellation of graduation ceremonies and life events and for others beloved family members the pandem this pandemic has done something to all of us however in the same effect it has divided us currently there is a grim divide at highland and although many toe the line there are some friendships and there are some friendships across the divide it is tearing us apart each of us have a different background family stories i live with a person with a pre-existing condition lung condition and i const consistently see my elderly family so i am very concerned about coronavirus and the possibility of giving it to my susceptible family each of us have a different background families and stories i personally choose to wear crop tops and short shorts in the summer because i believe comfort is important however just because we all have a different background family and story does not mean we are able to bend the rules because of them well on school grounds this meaning even an if another student does not have the same connection to coronavirus perhaps they do not have at-risk family members or they have already had the virus or they don't believe in the virus these ramifications do not and should not stand on school grounds even though the rule technically states all persons including but not limited to staff students and visitors shall we wear a face covering well on any district property in any district facility and at any district event whether indoors or outdoors tonight we are just asking for the enforcement of masks while inside the building there are giant crowds of massless kids we often have to swear it and avoid outside however a lot of the time it is not possible as it is a smaller space and we truly and it is truly honestly impossible for us to avoid the influx of people not wearing masks inside to take our own measures we wear multiple masks all day long we hold our breath and we shield our eyes in the hallway we take every long route to do our best to avoid them please let you know you are not our first listeners and we have tried our best to avoid taking time from you all by having meetings with our counselors our administrators and our principal these meetings were very helpful in expressing our concerns and our principle has taken some steps but due to the number of student overwhelming the staff um she says she cannot control this um we have a few other ideas other schools have implemented that work very well on many campuses they sorry i'm running out of time i have about it if you'd like you can email the rest of it or the whole entire speech to the board okay i will definitely email it sorry thank you elana hi my name is melana with elara and i'm a student at highland high school i'm a senior this year i've been at gilbert public schools for most of my schooling so i have first-hand experiences of what we what and who we are here to speak about today and i just want to thank you guys for allowing us to speak and yeah in previous years i've seen first hand that the dress code is very important to teachers and other administrators many students mostly females have been in the have been dress coded in the past almost every single day because showing skin is distracting to other students to me wearing your mask incorrectly is more distracting so sorry so wearing your mask is um included in the dress code and yet many teachers do not enforce it if someone is violating the rule and sorry my mind is just okay so people breaking the school rule is way more distracting and detrimental than a student wearing a tank top in hot arizona weather we are afraid to sit near other students we are afraid to walk through the hallways the ones where we have resorted to holding our breath and shielding our faces with our hands because of the overwhelming amount of students who do not wear their mask properly or even at all why does my education have to be compromised because someone doesn't have any sympathy for their peers no other dress quote just dress code rule affects someone's education no other rule makes one afraid to even show up to class i'm asking you to sympathize with us and to hear your students out the board is supposed to protect us and we are begging for you to do your part we have done ours but now but now i've had to overstep our job and have damaged our relationships with other students for just simply asking them to pull up their mask some of us have even called us derogatory names because we are vocal and care about our families and our friends this is our last result resort and we need people like you who have the power to please do something the group i'm here with today recently had a meeting with the highland principal she informed us that it is very difficult for administration to monitor who is and who isn't wearing a mask correctly like lindsay said the age group at highland are most like age group at highland according to the cdc are going to be asymptomatic so we have no idea who has it and who doesn't and it could be the students not properly wearing their masks we have 3 000 students walking through these hallways we need to go back to hybrid these rules are not enforced and there's no other solution in order to keep our families safe half of our staff here are not enforcing the rules and if there were there was more help available a stronger education system surrounding masks and consequences for those who violate the rules would take so much stress off of teachers and students who worry about bringing this deadly virus home to their families some students have the argument of just go online which has been proven false i've personally tried to go online but all of my classes which are ap have all been at the same exact time and other classes weren't even offered at all we have no other option but to step in an infected building we are first forced to hurt gilbert public schools families just to attend school thank you so the group i came here today with we have some questions we would like to ask you guys so we have four questions um the first being how are the cases being counted like into the board into the system during the public comments section we're not allowed to answer back we're just allowed to listen okay so you can you can ask the questions and then we can ruminate on them later so um so i'm gonna ask the questions and then read the rest of lindsay's um the second question is if i test it on friday um and am i if i test positive on sunday would that be counted and if not why the third question is many students with masks mask exemption forms play sports at our school or have part-time jobs where they have to wear them their mask and they do and my question is what types of doctors or health care workers are allowed to sign the mass exemption as some students get it signed by doctors that are not specialized in respiratory health such as a chiropractor and are they also allowed to have it signed by any relatives that are in the healthcare system and my fourth question is is that if students cannot absolutely wear the mask could they at least have could we at least incorporate the face shield into the form as many of our handicapped students do to finish off lindsay's speech our principal has taken some action steps but we were told by her that they are often unable to effectively enforce these rules due to the number of students overwhelming the staff we have a few ideas other schools have implemented that have worked very well on many campuses they instated the rule that if you have your mask purposely off or incorrectly inside the building you were moved to online school for two weeks online school was so mentally draining for a lot of students and aggravating too many parents and that is the reason we are here today the reason we are we were allowed to go back to in-person learning is because of masks and other health protocols those who do not follow the health protocol obviously do not truly value in person learning we do not want to be forced back into online schools because the truth is that the situation we present to you today violates arizona department of health services emergency measure 20204 as well as the governor of the state and of arizona's executive order 20 20 51.

um there is nothing more fun to look forward to than graduation for many of the students in senior prom but there is something more important than those events the 500 000 and 71 dead as of yesterday that is more that more americans lost than in world war one world war ii and the vietnam war all put together time again thank you thank you that was our last speaker and we will move to item seven dr santa cruz don't you just be before you go on i i would like to say that i appreciate the comments that we're getting um via online and and being sent to us i think there was a lot nine or eleven of them today and i spent the time it's up to 14 okay i spent the time reading them and i appreciate that that parents and community members are able to um give us comments online too thank you thank you mr eugetti and and thank you for bringing that again to the public's attention also would like to commend the students who and parents who spoke this evening you are certainly a service to your community and your peer group and we commend you for the courage to come forward and speak your mind item 7 7.01 is the monthly budget report dr mccord thank you dr santa cruz governing board members tonight ms betts will present our monthly budget report good evening governing board members dr santa cruz dr mccord this will be very short this evening next week we are scheduled to present to you the revised number two budget as well as do a comprehensive budget projection uh presentation to you as well so i just wanted to point out just a few highlights on this month's report of uh reflective of year to date january 31st so let's see what am i supposed to point oh i gotta turn it on sorry excuse me i'm an appointment so as you can see at the top line that's highlighted in yellow is our maintenance and operations fund when we presented the budget projection to you a couple of weeks ago we anticipated a revised budget of i'm sorry a revised budget of 249 million you can see that this revised budget number two pending is 257 million i want to share with you that new data arrives and we're calculating the average daily membership daily and we received an update on those numbers yesterday and so we're expecting that the revised budget number two pending will be to uh just over 260 million when we present to you next week so that's very good news as we are being funded on current year average daily membership the budget capacity changes daily here in gilroy public schools so in addition you can see the year-to-date expended encumbered and the available balance of just under 14 million that year-to-date expended encumbered does not account for the new allocation of the sr2 monies which we know will be a 9.7 million for gilbert public schools so the overall effect of that will be that that year-to-date expended encumbered will um will be decreased by that same about nine million dollars which will mean the available balance will go up and that will improve our budget projection for the fiscal year 2022 but we'll get into all of those details uh next week to continue the conversation i'm sorry okay so going to the next slide there we go the federal grants we wanted to make sure that we included another row on for the sr2 on the federal grants page as you can see the revised budget number two will have that amount reflected and we have not determined how that was going to be spent yet but um but that will be shared with you next week as well uh let's see and then on the state grants just wanted to share the biggest change on the building renewal grants is we have received now all of the reimbursement revenues from the school facilities board eliminating the negative in the building renewal fund um in addition we didn't highlight this but the results-based funding uh which we intend to distribute to the employees that are eligible in the first paycheck in march you will be approving that tonight at this board meeting on our enterprise funds as you know we are monitoring these funds closely as these are the two funds that have been consistently negatively impacted by the pandemic with the decrease in activity etc however note that on nutrition services the estimated revenues has been increased at this time due to the usda's change that all students will be offered a free me a free breakfast and a free lunch it actually we actually expect it to increase our revenues in the current year putting our nutrition services fund at a very positive sustainable balance and then these are the other district funds and we have other information regarding the bond funds etc as we get closer to april albert dutchover will be presenting the summer projects list to you and we will go into the bond fund activity at greater detail at that time and that is the end of my report this evening board members any questions comments i just want to say i appreciate the work to make sure we have an accurate student count and bring our budget up i mean uh school funding is very complicated and even more complicated now that we have current year funding and we have to be very watchful on that so thank you you bet anyone else okay no other questions and just for again information to the public board members have had the opportunity to review the slides that miss betts presented among others and so the lack of any question doesn't mean anything other than they have reviewed the information and they are satisfied with the information at this point and we will await a more comprehensive presentation next week all right we move to item eight consent agenda items for consideration discussion direction or possible approval is their emotion dr santa cruz i move that we approve the consent agenda as presented thank you mr carr is there a second second miss eugenie thank you there is a second any discussion seeing no discussion then we will vote all those in favor of proving the consent agenda as printed and presented please signify by saying i i those opposed the same motion carries five zero removed item nine action item uh nine point zero one discussion and action on accepting school calendar option one two one or calendar option two two two for the 2022 2023 23 24 school years is there a motion or by way of introduction dr mccord and then we'll ask for a motion thank you dr santa cruz governing board members you introduced the item extremely well back on february 2nd mr martin presented in a work study the survey related to the calendar we both surveyed the staff of gps as well as our families and for those of you that don't know what one two one and two two two mean uh one two one is is the traditional calendar calendar that we've been using for several years and that means one week at fall break off two weeks at winter break and one week at or during spring break two two two goes along the same model except an extra week two weeks at fall break two weeks at winter break two weeks spring break and the options for you to consider tonight again are for the 22-23 school year and the 23-24 school year mr martin is here if you have any questions before we go to mr martin is there a motion uh dr santa cruz i motioned that we adopt the 2-2-2 calendar for the 2022-23 and 23 24 school years thank you miss humphries is there a second i will second that motion and open the floor for mr martin's presentation and or discussion questions from the board good evening uh governing board members dr mccord community members as you recall we did review the survey results that were given to the both the staff and the community in december and then we reviewed them at the prior work study here in february and i'm here tonight to answer any questions that you may have can you give us the percentages please once again okay so this year in december of 2020 uh we had 9942 parents take the survey and 50.5 percent of the parents uh opted for the 2-2-2 model the staff response was 2979 responses for and 65 percent voted in favor of the 2-2-2 model and what about the other i have to figure that out okay no no so for the 1-2-1 on the parents it would be 49.5 percent and then on the one two one for the staff that was 35 percent thank you thank you mr martin can you uh talk about um when we have heat days at elementary i mean this would be starting school earlier yeah towards the end of july if we went to the 222 model what do we do for students for their recess time sure great question uh it is similar to what we used to call the rainy day schedule and now um different schools call it different things but really it's for acclimated weather and if the heat index at that day during lunch time particularly in july and august is over that threshold than the students normally eat in the cafeteria as they normally do and then instead of going out to the playground for that 15 or 20 minutes of recess schools have come up with different options most of them you still use their paraprofessionals and instead of watching them outside on the playground the students usually are divided into a series of rooms the the most popular areas that are utilized during that time for quote indoor recess or activities is the library and the project room some schools of course have other empty rooms or classrooms that they use as well and during that time then they do alternative activities though it might have board games or different activities some of them might be showing some type of video students can read that's left up to the discretion of each individual school and paraprofessional sometimes as well all right and when we talked uh earlier today you said the the morning time um when kids got it's not usually too hot for them at that point correct so for those grade levels uh at schools that have an am recess that's usually somewhere between 9 30 and probably 10 30.

usually the heat index at that time even if it's a heat advisory day is not hot enough at that time so the students are able to get outside for that am recess we have fewer schools now that have a pm recess partly due to the 8 10 to 2 55 school time with all our elementary schools getting out earlier than they used to and during that time there are some that still have a pm recess it really depends upon the daily schedule of each grade level but if they do then they would also spend time usually in their teacher's classroom for that 15-minute pm recess am and pm recess at the elementary schools is normally supervised by those teachers at that particular grade level so they figure out how to do that in their own classrooms if they have to stay inside and just remind us a couple years ago the legislature passed a law giving more recess but we had already had that in place in our district is that correct correct we pretty much had it in place we did have some intermediate fourth and fifth grade classrooms that did have to go back to adding an am or a pm recess in addition to the lunch recess that was school by school and so that was one the only major change of area otherwise we were in compliance with the new ars statute regarding recess at the elementary schools in grades k through five all right thank you mr martin can you give me the dates for um summer school this year please so for this year uh and this is summer of 2021 coming up right they will be june 7th through july 2nd and one of the things i will note is that we will put on we've talked about this previously and on these calendars we will note the summer school period so in this case on the 2022-23 calendar we would note that summer school would be june 5th through june 30th so families could plan as they are looking at that we know we have many families that do participate in summer school and then in june of 2024 on the uh second calendar that we're looking for your approval it would be june 3rd through june 28th for that four week period so it would give uh families at least that the 222 would give even though we're starting earlier would give the families at least a month yes correct okay thank you and all of these uh the one two one and the two two two uh proposals as you well know school is proposed to end on the thursday before memorial day and so then summer school starts the monday one week after memorial day on all versions of these calendars and then what would be the first day of school um for those two years the i'm looking here the 25th of july would be the first day of school in 2022 and then in the 2023 it would be the july 24th is that correct so yes i'm pulling up the calendars here so on the 222 model for 2223 the first day of school is monday july 25th on this proposed calendar and then on the 222 for 23 24 it is monday july 24th and that is nine days earlier than the one two one model which starts the following wednesday on those two calendar options okay thank you other questions comments yes i yes thank you dr santa cruz i had a few concerns one thing actually i wanted to point out on the calendars is on the 222 calendars okay just one of them just the 2022 2023 we just need to change um on september 22nd 23rd just on this middle column it says grading day but it needs to be parent teacher conference good catch but i see the rest it looks good on the other one but my concern is um one thing that i want to bring up was about the half days scheduled and i'm i know part of it is due to the scheduling this year and the all that we've you know all that we've all that we've all experienced this year but i am concerned i'm concerned about two things one i know our goal is to provide the best learning opportunities for our students and the best learning environments for our students and i know a big part of that is to have the professional development opportunities for our teachers but i'm concerned that four half days which really is only eight hours four half days toward teacher professional development which is really only eight hours but i think it turns into more than that with half days it changes it changes the nature of the day it really does it impacts teachers are able to do especially well all teachers elementary and junior high in high school when the classes are so short and junior high in high school it really makes it less than an optimal learning day and so i i'm concerned that by having adding continually adding more and more half days that we are interrupting the schedule and flow of learning and the expectation of learning and the opportunity for teachers to teach what they need to get through and so i'm wondering if there's something else that we could look at i i would like to see maybe two half days for um professional development and then if we could and i apologize that i'm offering this at this point but if we could look at the monday after the april break the spring holiday we have a four day weekend on that i wondered if we could take that spring holiday put that back so on the 2022-2023 calendar it's monday april 10th i wonder if we actually go to school that day and then look at an option of moving that day maybe to after fall break and trying to find a way to fund an extra day of um a teacher contract so that we could have a learning day and this is a lot of this is a lot of suggestions i think that would be an additional cost because it would it would and i would like to prioritize that so if we could if we couldn't find a way to to fund it starting in 2022 2023 then if it was on the calendar we would do like we did last time where it was just another day one more day i don't know if that's can we do more than 10 days i don't know if that's part of the problem but it would just be another day like we did a few last year i believe or the year before when we moved the monday after fall break we moved the teacher training day back before school started and then we just had an extra monday that's what kind of started the extra mondays after fall break so i know that's a lot to drop right now i don't know if if um how you guys would feel about even looking at it or discussing it i just i feel like i also wanted to point out in the 2020 2023 2024 calendar that spring break is march 11th through march 22nd and then the very next weekend march 29th and april 1st just as how easter falls is that four day weekend again and i just wondered again with that spring time there's that's when the testing remember we'd heard before from principals that the second semester um it's there's only 88 days in both of them on this 222 calendar and there's uh that would give one more day back to the second semester but the thing is that april time period is when we have testing that test those testing windows and as well as in high school they're getting ready for ap tests which are early may usually i just think those are critical days of learning and i would i just think we could i would like to see us find a way to use that in a different way so again this that's a lot to drop at this point uh those are my thoughts um i i guess i would propose well i don't know what i would propose i would want to hear your thoughts board members if you if you think that's worth exploring or my only concern this would would be that these proposals have gone through an established committee of folks who have given us their best recommendation over their study period which has been a significant amount of time and i think i think that that that that creates a challenge for us and the work that they have done to give us their best recommendation was so there was a calendar committee dr martin or have we who have we submitted it to wow i'm a doctor now i went dr santa cruz mr martin i'll take it yes yes this year we didn't have a formal committee like we did two years ago we basically took the options we have looked at them with administrators and other groups we've also briefly shared them with ibbt which has uh representatives from different groups as well too to look at the calendars okay well and we and we have had the feedback from right all of the parents and staff that that's true send it out to them and i so i think it's um well the only thing that would change that wouldn't change the start and end date no but it does i i personally feel like if we put professional development in a shorter frame a half day um strategically throughout the year i think that is a better use for teachers that they they get that i don't know what i'd call it shot in the arm you know just get that opportunity to learn something then take it and use it in their classroom and i think that's really really powerful um as opposed to putting on a whole day or moving it to a different you know at an additional cost and the second part of that is if it is an additional cost then we are committing a future board to that cost and we already know by our experience this year that prioritizing what is most important in the budget can be stressful because everything is important i mean we just everything is important um and so i my concern is that additional cost um of paying them for addition an additional day for professional development where this way we can you know parents have a little you know an extra time with their children i know it's hard for those working parents we now yeah we have over eight half days now with this it's a lot it's almost every if you start looking and if you have your children in school there's besides the early out there's many many half days it's very disruptive for students it's a great this is a great way to save money and to give teachers that professional development which is important but i'm concerned about our students learning and i'm concerned about putting that first and i think that this isn't the best way i am i do apologize that um that i didn't bring this up earlier i was looking more at the one two one and two two two so i i can understand that that maybe it's late in this process but i am very concerned that we have gotten away from putting the opportunities for student learning first and that with all the half days and other things that we put in it takes it it just wednesdays have become less than an ideal time from my perspective with my children for the learning to happen that's my concern so and i'm not saying i still we would still have the two half days throughout the year we would have one in august and we would have one in january i just would remove the one in march and the one in october but um but i can see that as well and i i do think that the four day weekend after the two weeks spring break is a bit ridiculous in the spring on the 2023-2024 i don't think that's the best use of our time in april and may but i don't when should i brought this up i guess at the last work study dr sanchez go ahead mr carr thank you miss wood i don't think you have to apologize for bringing issues up the reality is we can't discuss this outside of the board meeting we were presented at a work study it was a good presentation and we've all had time to see things afterwards and we all discover things and sometimes things are said on the dice i had i had not noticed the in spite of looking at this calendar many times had not noticed the two-week spring break followed immediately by a four-day weekend and if i were a high school teacher in particular as an ap teacher i'd be very very concerned about that in trying to prepare my students for success so i think it's a valid point and i don't know that you have someplace else to bring it up i i would suggest that we're not under a deadline of today to pass this and particularly the 23 24 i think we need to look at that matter perhaps and i know what makes the terms the you know the half semester is uneven but perhaps we seriously talk about the benefits of moving the first week of spring break from the 11th to the 15th of march to the 25th through 29th you could still give the monday off but that gives one day back that you could use someplace else or shorten this school year or start a day later or whatever it be but i think academically you're you're in essence affecting students academically because the the four day week following two weeks it's gonna take kids two weeks two days to get back in the routine then they're gonna have two days of education and they're gonna be hitting a four-week break it's it's just i think this would make a valid point that i hadn't considered or heard um and not trying to create more work but i think it's just it's something we need to seriously consider that's probably my greatest concern i i also you know we if we could find a way to realistically do it or understand the impact i think one of the things that we have with our neighboring districts that are on this calendar is they do do that extra day professional and it's one of the things that the overall contract of of teachers looks a little bit better because they get an extra one or two days pay i don't know that we can find a way to do that uh miss bets could how much does an extra day cost us across the system otm actually today ran the numbers and for sir if we uh give certified staff an additional day it's approximately 700 to 750 000 per day with salary and benefits for that additional day and that is my concern because um you know in a year like this year where we we have to really work to figure out how we're going to address a deficit um and and that was my concern when we we traded those days instead of spending that extra money um when it was brought up that was my concern in my experience being on this board is it's great to have a year like last year where we are able to do a nice raise and add a few positions to help us out that is an exceptional year it's not the standards i feel like i've cut the budget more than i've added things to it in my and this is my ninth year of doing a budget so i just want to be extremely careful not to tie the hands of a future board to where they i don't know what that year is going to look like hopefully it will be better than this one i hope there won't be a pandemic but i i really want to be careful not to tie the hands of the future board well in that case let's not adopt a calendar at all because we're now tying the days of of meetings i mean every decision we make and i say that facetiously and i apologize if that comes across rudely that wasn't my intent but and i get you're talking monetarily and that's that's your your comment but um you know but every decision we make doesn't in fact impact the decisions that we've made in the future i i to a great degree actually agree with your comment in spite of my remarks at the same time um you know i i i do agree with some of the concerns and i hear those concerns and and i do know that we cut to the half days with not necessarily with the intent of that being a permanent but like anything once we find some way to save money it becomes permanent we don't revisit it so i'm not adverse to doing that what i would suggest if we're going to go this approach and and i haven't spoken to the overall calendar um let me do that just in turn instead of going back and forth i i personally struggle with the 2-2 calendar that now that's my personal i like the traditional calendar if it were to if it were up to me we would go back to you know start after labor day and and let kids have a summer and let kids work and let kids have that experience that's not really an option because the state and the national laws have prolonged the the school year and added to the school year we could shorten it by removing spring break and fall break entirely but uh that you know that was at the time that was adopted i was not on the board and there was a lot of discussion but at that time well are they just trying to elongate the year and make a move towards year-round school um but now that it's in place people have accepted it liked it and it's it's been positively received and adding that fourth that monday afterwards at first people were like why are you doing that and now people take advantage of that weekend so it's it's one of those things that as people get used to something uh they they see the advantages um you know what two three years ago the last time we visited calendars i made the statement very similar to this that i prefer the uh the traditional calendar but i based my vote publicly in my comments off the fact that the majority of parents wanted the traditional calendar even though the majority of teachers at that point wanted the 222 calendar and i again i personally prefer the one two one calendar but staying consistent with my rationale in the last round of discussion on calendars where i went with what the majority of parents want i plan to support a 2-2 calendar what i would perhaps suggest is let's adopt the 2223 calendar or vote to see if we adopt it and perhaps we put the 2324 calendar on hold to address some of the issues that miss wood brought up particularly about the spring break but also to answer some of her questions rather than you know i don't think that's more than maybe the next meeting to allow a little bit of discovery on some of those questions that we haven't been able to discuss publicly mr carr i i don't disagree with the intent of what you're suggesting i would modify slightly and say why don't we approve what's before us with the caveat that the 2324 calendar to be reviewed and and adjusted as necessary so that everyone is aware that we we have some concerns or some some of us have some concerns about that particular year in a specific area and try to smooth that area out if we can well i if i can dr sanchez um two other things again i would prefer that we don't have that monday after that in that april on either of those calendars but i guess you know if that doesn't go through that doesn't go through i prefer that we even if we don't have a teacher day that we start maybe a day later or move it to the first semester somehow another thing could we just could we just have two half days for professional development and find another way to do the other even if we can't put in the full day could we just take out those other two and then i i don't know if that's possible that's just another suggestion and then i also wanted to bring up that we we received a few emails um and just wanted to kind of discuss this um a few emails and i'm sure you'll read them or and maybe this were statements in some of the statements made today online the online comments um some of the concerns were if we changed the 222 they they were concerned that we've had so much change and again that's partly due to this year that would it is it worth it to just keep the one two one just to have some consistency for families this won't go into effect until next year 22 23 not this coming year so that gives a little bit of help there but i wondered what your other thoughts were on that and then also there was someone who mentioned that summer internships for students if you're looking like at college opportunities particularly between your junior and senior year they're often july like the four weeks of july um so this would put this would make it difficult for someone to do that and start school i don't know that that's the majority of our students but i certainly that would be some of our students you know how would we could we invite them to do that and then come to school contact with their teachers and come to school if that's the opportunity that they need to take that's what i would do if i were that parent i when we lived in chandler which i lived in chandler for a year and a half and on that calendar my son attended the national scout jamboree and just missed the first few days of school that was just how it had to be handled and i think if someone has a great opportunity like an internship at nasa i would suggest they go with that talk to their teachers in advance make sure that they do what they need to and and make up those days one of the reasons i was leaning more towards the 222 is because queen creek and higley and chandler all do this um so i you know it's it's not like we're the first ones to do it but um it did seem like we're tending towards that with our survey um and so that's where i was because because we actually have a a majority of parents who want the 222 and a majority of the staff that's the reason i was offering that one as the motion with regard to the comment on internships and and the like it's been my experience both as an educator in the district and as an administrator that whenever opportunities present themselves for families in our community the school and the district has always worked to help benefit that student and that parent and i don't think that would be a problem regardless of what calendar we select we have we have a tradition i guess of of working with our parent community when things of import affect a family and a student so i don't see that as a monumental concern thank you and dr santa cruz i'd echo that i you know i know a few years ago two of my children when they were in high school had the opportunity to travel over to to africa with a humanitarian trip and every teacher was bent over backwards to accommodate them now one of the differences that mrs wood points out was it was mid-year so they could talk to the teachers before they went get work done before they went etc i think teachers would be equally accommodating but it's a little bit harder to get in touch with your teacher if you're missing the first week or first two weeks of school and so we would we we may want to consider some some formal or informal policy adjustments that allow for that at some point yeah i think that's implicit in many of our policies and where a teacher is unavailable that's why we hire principals i i'd like to say that um i would agree with mr carr i think we shouldn't be starting school till after labor day either having taught in the dark ages when that happened it was really much easier in terms of the heat and all of that and i and i don't think that the nine days or eight days or whatever with the heat the way it is now is going to make any difference um i too you know understand people saying that they don't want a lot of change but like you just said it's not for another year um i was surprised that that our community the majority of the people that were polled want the 222 i know that the teachers or the staff was overwhelming both years not wasn't just a slight majority but it was an overwhelming majority and i think that you know we have to listen to them and then as as far as as um the half days and i i would just like to say that i know that that sometimes it seems like it interferes with learning and i i really understand that completely but we are there's so many things that teachers have to learn now that they didn't have to learn before and things have changed so much and they change so quickly and we have to give them the opportunity to not have to do everything on their own time and even you know even when we give them the half days i i can't i can't tell you how many teachers still are taking a class from four to five or four to six or whatever on their own time and and i know that's part of being a teacher i get that but i don't think i think that that we are enhancing student learning by giving the teachers the opportunity to improve their skills so i i understand what you're saying and i i get that and i know that that can be an issue however i do really believe that it is an integral part of of our learning is giving our teachers those and i think you know i i look at what we're doing in this district now in terms of our staff development compared to you know just just the growth through the last 10 or 15 years and we've put together you not we you guys have put together probably the premier staff development program in the state for teachers and you know i see all the time what what they're doing and you know i think it's extremely valuable for us to give the teachers the opportunity so you know i mean like i said i'd if i were in charge of the world we'd be going back after labor day because i can remember duty was a whole lot easier but that's not the way it's going to be so i think we have to be you know i i appreciate that you've taken the opportunity to um to survey the community and the teachers and we need to give them a voice and we've got a lot of responses you know when you think about it i know we have a much much larger district but that's a lot of responses additional i guess just two other thoughts one it is a majority but it's a very small majority but it was last year too so it's it's a pretty even split as far as the parents go but also second i think it's just important to also say it's one week it's about one and a half weeks earlier it's not as early as chandler and queen creek go back they go back even a week earlier than this um and so that kind of speaks to my point too of it's really not about that students are going to retain learning better it's a one week difference basically from what we're doing it's not about if one thing is academically better or not it's really i guess about preference i think i think mr martin has said that before and about making decisions and then going forward with it again if i if it was if there was one way or the other that to me said again i guess that's why i'm saying to me the academic and learning that i brought up the concerns that i have about the academic and learning time but either calendar i think addresses equally the the learning retention of students the opportunities that they have to learn that kind of a thing i don't think it's that big of a difference the one two one or two two two the way that we have it now so well and and i would hope that we could address any issues on those shorter days that the time does get well used i will just say of course my kids started in public schools quite a long time ago 30 years ago and i would say that the way we use time today in our schools is way more effective and well used than it was when my kids started elementary school i mean i the way we are targeted in instruction and we use time and we get kids up and moving and the level that we're teaching at i just am always impressed when i visit a school to see what kids are learning and you know i i say i am not smarter than a fifth grader i feel like i need to go back to school i have more wisdom i have more wisdom because i've lived longer but um they are learning so much and their time um is really well used and i can tell you some eye-opening stories about how time was not used back in the day so um i i understand that maybe you feel it's not as well used as it could be but i will i do think that we're doing much better now than we were 30 years ago or 20 years ago and i'm not suggesting that i'm not suggesting or faulting teachers in any way i'm saying when you have 30 minutes every other once a month on a wednesday or a friday that changes you know that does change your schedule impacts what you can teach what you have time for not if your intent is to use it or not and i i do think that is important you know that we keep keep like you said keep um emphasizing that and i appreciate all that teachers do to make that happen so okay and i'll make one last remark if i can go ahead mr croc thank you i'm just looking again at this calendar 23 24.

if i start the week of february 18th or 19th since that's a monday i have a four day week i have a four and a half i have a five day week with a half day i have a five day week then i have zero zero four four so in that seven week period no you have a half day on this one too hit that eight that's a half a day so i don't have a full week in that entire seven period seven week period and i think that's what's what what what creates the concern um if we can schedule that i mean that's disruptive to education that's disruptive to parents who are trying to to to work and employ and so on so to me that would be that would be the consideration can we can we just look at that um i'm i'm appreciate your your suggestion dr santa cruz if we adopt these but if we can adopt these with a plan to come back and maybe revisit this in the next one to two board meetings to see if we can find a modification that works um and actually put it on the agenda so it doesn't just fall off how about if i um amend my motion to uh um include i i think i said adopt the two two two schedule bringing back 2023 2024 calendar at the next business meeting to look at options for adjusting the calendar i i would like us to look at that same period for 2022-2023 because it's very similar as far as not hardly a full week and i apologize if i'm speaking out a term but listening to all of you uh some options when i look at this the monday after both of the spring holidays if we wanted to we could make that a school day so that would be april 10th and april 1st no fooling would be a school day and what we could do then is start the first day of school actually in the fall instead of on a monday we could start it on a tuesday and that would push it back one more day that also in the semesters then you'd go from 92 in the first semester to 91 and the second semester would be 89 if you look when new teachers start back in july on the 15th and the 14th if you move it one day everything then they would start on that following monday the 18th and the 17th when new teachers to our district start so one of the things you know that teachers i will say like uh is that that first week back is always long days for both teachers and students getting back into the routine so having a four day week with students perhaps is more similar to normally here on the one two one typically we have a three day three days back starting on wednesday so that's one thing we can do if you are interested in exploring that option i think the motion stands we want to revisit and modify specific aspects of the calendars so in concept we are the motion is adopting a 2-2-2 calendar and the modification or i why don't we just say um the motion is to adopt the 2-2-2 calendar for 20 22-23 and 23-24 making slighted bringing it back at the next board meeting to make slight adjustments are you saying next week at the brief board meeting and the next business okay and and then maybe if there is an opportunity maybe we could just look at some options at the brief board meeting so we can have time to think about it if that can work into our plan i think that those options can be submitted to us via the superintendent's report okay they can be and we can we can touch base on it on march 2nd which is next week just know also we have a lot of things that are coming up within march that are pretty important as well so please give us some leeway if if we fall behind on something yep and dr santa cruz i want to be very careful if we if if we go that route of adopting this knowing that it's modified it will be modified that we not publish it uh more actively because as soon as we publish it on that calendar list on the website people are going to start saying oh this is the dates and if we come back and change these dates people have planned you know vacations and and other things for those two weeks so i think that's that's a given that while we may approve as the motion stated this evening it will not be published until we make the necessary modifications at our next business meeting after our next business meeting i should say could i just ask is the concern to not make the change that mr martin offered tonight is there just a concern you want to just look at it make sure that everybody has a chance to look at it or why not adopt what he suggested i would prefer we look at it just so we so that when it is finally we weren't rushed in any way shape or form or anybody was confused about what was discussed right here so i went should we just table it then i i'm just i'm just asking what's the what's the least confusing you know what's the best could table it i i would rather just adopt it because i think if we do something i think it should just be minor okay i mean like a change a day or two is a minor change um other more than that i think is problematic i think i i just want to respect the level of participation of folks yes uh who were involved whether that was mr martin and touching base with various employee groups and parents or whether it was a full committee i just want to respect that that piece of the work and i think with the minor the the modifications we talked about tonight don't impact the essence of of what we've already went out and surveyed for and so i think we'll be okay and are we ready to vote does everyone understand what they're voting on okay so all those in favor of adopting calendars under the 222 model with a return at a business meeting to review modifications to appropriate calendars please signify by saying aye aye those opposed same motion carries five zero item 9.02 results based funding distribution dr mccord thank you dr santa cruz governing board members every year for the past four years we've come to you for your approval based on arizona revised statutes the results based funding and its implications for gilbert public schools this is the fourth of the year uh results-based funding has been allocated the funding consists of legislative statewide appropriations that the arizona department of education administers and distributes to eligible school districts or charter schools based on statutory formula through applying the statutory formula gps received 1 million 484 173 000.69 to be distributed among 10 identified schools those schools are ashland ranch canyon rim elementary carroll ray ranch elementary gilbert classical academy greenfield elementary harris elementary highland park elementary neely traditional academy cortell elementary and patterson elementary receipt of the funds is dependent on the number of students who attended the school on the 100th day of school during the 2019-20 school year the funds may be distributed in a number of different ways however gps has decided to continue to distribute the funds in the same way as the previous school year a stipend will be given to current qualifying staff in those buildings current global academy staff who worked at one of the 10 qualifying schools in the 1920 school year will also be eligible the allocation for stipends to include payroll benefits will be 90 of the school allocation with the remaining 10 allocated a school to the school for professional development other eligible expenses each eligible certified staff member as previously defined will receive a portion based on their full-time equivalency whereas each full-time staff member will receive an 800 dollar stipend also based on their full-time equivalency the result-based funding monies will be distributed in one check and thank you dr mccord you have heard the rationale is there a motion i move that we approve the results-based funding as presented by dr mccord thank you mr jetty is there a second second thank you mr humphries is there any discussion just a question i was listening to here did you give us details from the state of how they selected this because we two schools that were previously didn't qualify last year but i don't feel like we had the same testing so i'm just wondering what was their they've never been the same year over year right so it depends on free and reduced lunch it depends on test scores there's a lot of and then there's some little other formulas together either include them or knock them out depending on certain aspects there is a link in our board agenda under this item and you can go click on the link to look through it okay it's pretty comprehensive to be honest with you it's not simple i guess the best way that's great i will look at that i appreciate that thank you no problem any other comment questions concerns seeing none then the motion is before you all those in favor of 9.02 results-based funding distribution please signify by saying aye aye those opposed the same motion carries 5-0 item 10 request for future agenda items if there isn't something that one of us has a burning desire to present openly this evening please make sure you make contact with mrs wilson so we can put it on to a future agenda we'll move to item 11 board committees and reports item 11.01 gilbert ed foundation ms humphreys um so right now the gilbert education foundation is working through the number of grants that we're given um in january to make sure that people that the teachers have what they need and then um they are beginning to work with the technology department on the seti conference that will be held after school gets out where teachers can go get professional development and training and learn more about technology and integrate that into their classrooms and um so this the study conference coming up they'll be one day in person one day virtual to help their people social distance and um it's really great conference and so i appreciate gilbert education foundation helping to do the funding for that because it it is a real benefit to our teachers and our staff thank you ms humphries 11.02 city of mesa liaison ms wood i don't have anything to report tonight thank you ma'am 11.03 11.04 town gilbert liaison and finance audit committee mr carr thank you dr santa cruz i have nothing from the town of gilbert the finance audit committee did meet this afternoon or this morning i guess it was noon time so whatever you want to call it had a good discussion one of the things that the board may be aware of or might want to be aware of is that our current contract with the external auditor expires after this year so that will be going out for an rfp shortly then we reviewed the comprehensive annual financial report and we'll be in the next meetings talking about the internal audit plan as to to move forward thank you mr carr i am item 11.05 insurance trust representative mr jetty i just want to say that we met this afternoon and we'll be bringing um information to the board for the at the end of march no next week and we have good news for a change not for a change but we really have good news so and can i uh say something else that has nothing to do with the this will you slap me around or anything okay i just wanted to thank the um don and our videographer for giving us the opportunity to come and read and i would like to say that that um i belong to a group on facebook that are storytellers all over the country and i was telling them about this and they were like wow what a great district um although i do want to say that i got bumped by dr mccord i had my ten books and i only got through three of them so i i could see why you got bumped i wasn't i wasn't i wasn't happy i have no comment [Laughter] and item 11.06 legislative committee there uh are several bills moving through the legislature about four in the house five in the house and four in the senate that will have an impact on our business at the district level and there are at least two if not three bills moving through the legislature that have a have or could have a direct impact on the way boards function so pay attention and make contact where you feel appropriate will we get paid what's up no are we gonna get paid yeah a cup of coffee maybe one day or a donut miss you jetty i heard they're gonna triple your salary for the public for the public unless you misinterpret that comment the board is unpaid and that is really all i have to add i know that you're all paying attention to asba and the organizations that you belong to they're submitting emails to you it's a pretty active place downtown right now item 12 future meeting dates mr corp dr mccord thank you dr santa cruz governing board members just want to include one that isn't there and that is a ford retreat number two continuation of our last board retreat this friday morning at 9 00 a.m and then march 2nd we have a board work-study brief board business meeting
