does anybody have anything to add to the agenda can i please have a motion to approve the agenda potion second enters in mazer all in favor aye aye any opposed eyes have it uh accomplishment recognition for the month of march the administration would like to honor the following individuals who have been nominated by staff and selected by the administration for the following awards student of the month mr gold okay oh okay great oh how cute yeah for the employee of the month um ladies uh [Laughter] oh my gosh [Laughter] i have been told i don't need a microphone before but i'll use it um i'm going to try to do this without crying but kathy and jen are probably two of the most amazing people i've ever met in my life there's so much that goes on behind the scenes at all of our schools and in our district that people are never ever gonna see they just are never gonna see it unless you work there and jen and kathy do it every single day with a smile on their face they care about us as teachers they care about our kids they ask about our families on a normal basis and it means the world to us so thank you for everything you do oh hello i'm not sure if you guys can hear me but okay um yeah over the course of the pandemic it's been really hard and we're always trying to find somebody who's like consistent and constant and i think that's who miss jen and miss kathy are in the front office i find it interesting because like the term front line is now kind of a thing and they are on the front lines of the front office and it takes a certain level of presence and focus as well as the ability to like coordinate with not only just families and students but with like the admin the transportation and as ms don said it's like something that they manage to do every single day and despite the amount of responsibility that they have they never lack in empathy or patience and they give students like the time of day or a listening year or even to like a staff you know when we need it most um and despite of like the heaviness of it all like they're like they're a light in my day because i get to watch them from my office and it's kind of fun because you know they're always dancing or doing something crazy and they don't take themselves so seriously which i think is like the kind of that's the kind of spirit that you have to have especially in a time like this so um i just wanted to say i'm so happy to be celebrating this evening with you guys because you guys deserve to be celebrated you're so appreciated here and thank you for like embodying like the big hollow spirit well i love jen and kathy and they work so hard and they're always doing the best job they can at all times it's so hard to choose who's better the right or the left so they're both [Laughter] [Applause] so they truly are deserving of this recognition certainly working with these two co-workers every day has been a gift they are not liking any bit of this as they are the most humble people that i know but we have to say this anyway um they truly exemplify all that is in our mission statement they're willing to do whatever it takes to help children families the school and the district be successful there's no task or project that they cannot complete they're amazingly resourceful and always willing to work through any problem and go the extra mile they bring positivity to the school every single day and work hard to ensure that everything runs smoothly they are welcoming to all and extremely dedicated to our school district we really feel fortunate to have both of you as the first faces that people see when they come into the office as soon as you walk into the elementary school they are there and no matter what is at what comes forth they're ready to tackle that and so thank you kathy and jen for all that you've done and continue to do for everyone at big [Applause] hollow pitcher yes i'm just gonna stand back here well you're gonna be in it thank you thank you there we go all right okay our student of the month julianne all right julianne you want to come on up [Applause] how are you doing good you must have had a you must be doing very very good come up here and brag about you okay why don't you come over here and stand right here all right let's see if you stand right here let you hold this okay you hold this all right your teacher is going to brag about you all right [Music] in class one of my favorite memories i have of julian i don't even know if she remembers this is i always send home books and crafts in their monthly deliveries and one time one of my one of her crafts didn't end up in her bag and we didn't realize that until we started doing our craft and she looked at me and unmuted herself and said you know what miss dimaggio it's okay i understand sometimes mistakes happen and for a kindergartner to have that maturity and understand that that's what happened just blew me away and i was like oh my goodness julianne you warmed my heart and she's just a kind little girl she's so funny and i absolutely love having her in class i don't have enough good things to say about her she's an awesome thank you so much we're going to stay here and take a picture can we take a picture here all right mrs mazur's on our school board here come right in here you'll get to be right in front oh yes yes get her dad in here awesome awesome great thank you so much thank you oh she's cute i will take no private action that might compromise the board or administration and will respect the confidentiality of privileged information thank you anybody have any questions on the consent agenda nope can i please have a motion to approve the consent agenda agenda as amended in closed session motion second question yes yes public comments i have a public comments here do you have mrs johnson yep there's a microphone right there robin miss jensen are you aware of all the comments no worries i don't know do i need to pick it up or is it okay all right is this good man up here i'm not that loud oh my gosh that's a first good evening for those of you who do not know me my name is robin jensen i have been a teacher here at big hollow middle school for 20 years and am proud to be part of this district that being said this is the first time that i have felt compelled to come before the board and speak i want to begin by saying i'm not speaking as a representative of the middle school teachers i'm here to speak in support of them after watching the last board meeting i could not help but feel that you as our board have lost faith in your teachers a discussion regarding asynchronous assignments which began with an unintentional signaling out singling out of teachers ended with a motion to have administrators come up with a proposal to improve what we are providing to our students surveys were sent out to both parents and students to better understand their perspective regarding both the quality and quantity of asynchronous work and provide them with an opportunity to indicate areas of support they feel are needed or are currently lacking we have all been trying our best the community the board the administration and the teachers to put the needs of the students first and while it is true that improvement can always be made i was disheartened that when many stakeholders were heard from there was one key group that was left out the teachers we too are stakeholders in the educational process at the last meeting i got the impression that some of you were unaware we were teaching remotely and in personally in person simultaneously this led me to think that perhaps you are also unaware of the programs we are using and the supports we are providing to our students this is when i decided to survey the teachers here in the middle school who teach the core subjects just so you're aware all the core teachers responded with the exception of one who is on maternity leave so we didn't ask her the data i have provided to you is just that data information that i believe may give you as well as the community some understanding as to what is seen in the classroom i ask the teachers to select from this trimester one asynchronous assignment and figure the percentage of incomplete work and one friday that they had requested specific students to attend class and figure the percentage of non-attendance the percentage was over 50 percent for both i asked teachers to figure out the percentage of those students with missing work for this trimester which was also over 50 percent finally i asked teachers to provide a list of programs they have used over the course of the year to give instruction and support to students as you can see there are not only district approved programs such as ixl apex and newsela but there are multitude of other resources that are being used from pbs videos to peer deck presentations we know this pandemic has forced all of us into making difficult decisions in an ideal world we would all be here in school masculist teaching learning and thriving but we must deal with the reality of today i came with two purposes tonight to make certain you have the information from all the stakeholders and to reassure you we are all here for the same reason the students i have come here tonight to reassure you of the efforts that i see being made by your teachers and hopefully reinstill your faith in them the faith that i fear has wavered i have watched my colleagues collaborate on new ideas research innovative ways to present material meet with students during their prep and their lunches and continuously strive to serve their students to the best of their ability and i believe we will continue to do these things because that is who we are we are teachers and we believe just as you do in putting the needs of our students first i respect and value your time and thank you for allowing me to share my thoughts with you thank you robin thank you uh next public comment this is from natalie stetfield four years ago tiffany enters joined the big hall school district as a board member and since that time tiffany has dedicated countless hours to ensuring that our voices were heard and decisions were being made for what is best for our students tiffany has been instrumental in the success of the big house school board as she has joined multiple committees participated in classroom events meetings with teachers and etcetera whenever there was an opportunity to learn or assist the school tiffany was the first one to sign up we as a community have truly been blessed to have tiffany serve on the school board as she always gives 110 percent in everything she does i have witnessed the countless hours that tiffany has put in to make sure that her voices are heard she has been fearless in her pursuit to allow all students to have the best opportunity to be successful while attending big house school district in order to participate in the board meetings tiffany would spend time becoming as knowledgeable as possible on all topics being discussed by doing this it allowed her to be objective and considerate to all situations tiffany never did the bare minimum with her role as a board member and she had always gone above and beyond tiffany is a member in the big hall school district community i thank you for your time energy and compassion you have given your position on the school board your fearlessness commitment and undying support for big house school district is beyond appreciated thank you for everything that you have done these past four years this one is from megan blake we would like to express our deepest gratitude to tiffany enters for years of devotion and dedication to the big al school board and our kids within this community we are very sad to find out that she will no longer be on the board tiffany is someone who wants the best for all kids our school and our community she has dedicated countless hours to ensure our kids at big hollow continue to thrive even under rough circumstances we met tiffany when our kids started attending big hollow she was one of those people that when you meet her you feel like you have known her for years she welcomes everyone with open arms i know my kids have felt that too our kids have been in class together she is somebody that always volunteers her time and has a presence in the classroom and school my kids know her as one of those special people they can go to if they need a simple comfort of a hug or a smile as she passes by we appreciate all the board members commitment to wanting the best for our children we hope that the new board members will have the same commitment and passion that tiffany brought to our community she is a true servant's heart and the positive impact she made during her time on the board will not go on notice kevin and megan blake this is from lindsay levine it was with great sadness that we'll be seeing tiffany enters the part from the big hill school board this year is no exception that she has been part of all the decisions that have been made throughout the years no matter what decision or what topic all her votes and decisions have come from the heart this is who she is and she speaks from the heart with truth and passion for what she believes in she also put the big hollow community first and that includes students parents and the entire administration and staff there has been a tremendous amount of time whether it be observing classrooms taking time out of our day to go to conferences pre-covered and in the current state an enormous amount of time spent on zoom call meetings including meetings regarding technology and curriculum there's so much that is involved when you are a member of the school board and her commitment needs to be applauded and incoming board members will have some big shoes to fill thank you tiffany for everything you have accomplished ben and lindsay levine i believe that's that's it and then we have another request for public participation in closed session at the end of the board meeting okay that's it for public comments superintendents report mr gold yes monthly board policy review is item a exhibit 12.

let's call to order nancy kupko present shirelle fuller present dan nicholas here trey pavisic here rick cavanado here joanna vazquez drexler president zoe boyd and sam bull thank you great we have a quorum let's stand for the pledge i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all okay we start with the my favorite part the student perspectives yup north high student perspectives janice good evening so i'm very pleased to have three students here with us tonight who are going to talk about how they have reimagined activities and athletics due to covid so first you are going to hear from kate gross who is a junior right um and she plays girls basketball and then i'm going to turn it over actually is sam who's just going to stay there and as you know he's a senior and he he's going to talk about soccer and sam if you want to throw anything out about omega that would be good too and then i will turn it over to robbie boucher who is a sophomore and he is working on freaky friday which is our musical that we will be producing in about two weeks live so it's very exciting so okay turn over to you hello everyone thank you for having us here to speak um so for girls basketball it was early unexpected season because a lot of us didn't think we'd be able to get the opportunity to play so when we did it was really exciting for all of us and when we would normally have our season which would start typically in late october early november we started doing remote workouts over zoom we would work out do ball handling things like that and we did like some trivia um around christmas and just little things that try to help us stay together during the time when we would normally be practicing so but it was still really hard to be a part um so when we found out that we were able to have a season in february even if it was just for one month we were all really excited and obviously there was a lot of changes with masks and things like that but it was a really positive experience being able to be with the team and have all levels play as well for masks and practice obviously it's really hard to play with the mask it's kind of like conditioning in and of itself so there's a couple more breaks during practice things like that um water breaks so in the beginning of the season or practices we would go outside sometimes when it was warmer out have our breaks out there we could take off our masks and spend a little more time which was nice but overall even though that was difficult to breathe it kind of felt like we were getting stronger too in a way so it's kind of funny and how that translated into games uh in during each quarter of every game there would be a 90 second mask timeout so that was a nice break too that we normally wouldn't get so and it also encouraged everybody to keep their mask on the whole time which was i felt like something that went well throughout for most teams um we are benches for games were socially distant so during those mass timeouts we could all take off our mass drink water and we were all six feet apart and um another thing that was different this year is we didn't have a jump ball so the jump ball would just go to the visiting team which was kind of a weird thing but it was just another measure that was implemented and we only played in conference games but we were able to play the silver and the gold side so we played every team on your side of the conference uh once and then you would also get to play a few games with the other side of the conference which was nice and then we also didn't know if we were able to have family members in the beginning of the season um to show up to our games but we ended up able to have two family members per kid so that was really nice to have a sheet that you could give to different people each time and then also our games were live streamed on our youtube channel so which is hoping something that i hope we continue to do because it allowed some of my family that lived out of state to watch my games which isn't something that they would normally have the chance to do and most of the other schools also had something like a youtube youtube channel or a streaming service set up so they were able to watch our away games that they weren't able to attend um but i'm really proud of our team it was a crazy season and our coaches and our teammates and the administrators really worked hard to make it all happen we did have two girls on our team test positive for cobin in the middle of our season so we did have to quarantine for 10 days and couldn't practice or play so that was really hard obviously everybody was super disappointed but we were able to reschedule all of the games we missed so we ended up kind of having a crazy schedule for the last week and a half we played nine games in nine days so yeah there was um i think one practice during that whole time and the rest of it was just game so obviously it was really tough on our bodies but it was also a time where we all came together and worked really hard um knowing that like this is our opportunity to play whatever circumstance it is so you know we toughed it out made it through and we uh tied for conference so we're really proud of that having done that since 2014 i believe and i'm really proud of our team and our program and i think we're headed in a really strong direction in terms of hopefully being a state contender next year so um i'm really just grateful for the opportunity that we did have to play though it was weird and though nobody could stop it from feeling weird it was still a really great experience thank you all right um well for soccer uh it's pretty much just a reiteration of everything kate said not like normal but certainly fun and i'm certainly grateful to have had a season at all so we are in the last week of our season right now we have two more games left and it's it's been really fun this year uh the last two seasons or so we've been about 500 but now we are seven and two uh we like the basketball team have been able to play just opponents from the west suburban gold and silver which is a very strong group of teams um and aside from a few embarrassing losses i would say that we've had a pretty much a perfect season and we've we've been on a little bit of a revenge tour uh taking out some opponents that got the best better of us uh in the last couple years so it's definitely been a great cap to my soccer career here at north and i would really just say you know like kate said super grateful to have had a season at all super grateful to the people that were able to make this happen that are constantly out there trying to keep us safe trying to schedule everything so that it keeps everybody safe you know like she said we have mask wearing at practices and at games socially distance obviously everything like that so that means of course there's less opportunities for team building outside or off the field but i think that the relationships built and the relationships that were already there that have been built upon in this season have really made up for it i think that in the absence of those off the field activities we've really built more camaraderie on the field and you know being our senior year we've got so many seniors and so many of them are so talented and i just think that this was a great way to cap it off because you know the alternative would be all that talent goes to waste and everybody feels bad because they didn't have a season so i think the overall feeling is really just gratefulness and you know we're hoping to close the season out strong at the end of this week we can technically win conference joint with lt uh if we beat glenbard west and if oprf somehow loses or somehow beats lt but lt is a very very strong team so uh that's not looking too good but still we are better than we have been so it's been a great a great season um obviously like kate said just super duper grateful to be able to play it all uh and really proud of our team so hi everyone i'm rob boucher i am the student lighting designer for dgn's production of freaky friday which will be opening uh next week actually um and i'm here to talk about how cove impacted uh what we're doing uh on the technical side of theater um so lighting wise since i'm the lighting designer um i was tasked with finding out what lights go where for the show what we're gonna rent um how the lights are gonna be set up and all that um since uh cove it happened we didn't have a big lighting budget for the show because a bunch of our other shows got canceled and ticket revenue and all that um so i reached out to justin frick um over at av chicago i worked with him previously with lights and sound for boy scouts actually um and his company was able to supply us with all of our lighting rental gear for absolutely zero cost so that's like 70 lights and all the cabling and everything for zero cost that's like almost fifty thousand dollars worth of lights for not a dime um so that was uh so great of him to do that um and we were just so thankful for him doing to do that because he would have never done that in a normal year sound wise the pit which normally plays live in the auditorium we had to move that pit to the band room while still playing live so that meant we had to get all these microphones and new cables and new sound mixing gear so that we could still hear the band live even though they weren't present in the auditorium um so that was a big challenge finding out how we were going to do that um and just learning all those new skills uh because it's different mixing instruments that it is mixing people speaking and all that um set rise we had to make the set more modular to um allow everything to roll and have there be more space on the sides of the stage that people could social distance and all that and it allowed for smaller set pieces but still accomplishing the same goal we wanted to have with the show and yeah set wise also we were able to expand our booth more so traditionally our technical booth is only one uh platform and then seating behind but we took out the seating and added a second platform so that we could social distance better and make sure everyone even spread out so that we were all safe and all good with that during rehearsals we had to wear gloves and then we had to wear masks and everything everybody stays socially distant because it's easy to stay distant because it's on the stage and everybody can spread out and do their different projects so yeah that's what's been happening at the dgn theater any questions about from any of us oh yeah um we also had to um have half for some songs because like a certain time limit of like singing and not singing uh we had to record like some singing parts and some band parts and that had to be edited and then like it's gonna be played while the actors are dancing and then like lip syncing so like it's like a hybrid of like um singing and not singing and we also had to do other versions of that like um only having the band being pre-recorded and then having the actor saying live and then vice versa so that's also what happened um uh singing-wise any questions for any of us i'd just like to say i've read a couple articles lately where they've spoken about you know just given culver's been horrible and terrible and people have missed a lot but but it's really the first time since world war ii that the american population has had to become so resilient and that you know you guys have really proven that today the resiliency of our population and of our student population and i just want to commend you all because i think it's pretty amazing what you have done so thank you i kind of like to echo those sentiments i mean to say that i'm impressed with you is an understatement i think all of you have just risen to every challenge and and i think you've learned more and are better for it i'm just i'm just so impressed i words can't even express it so thank you and uh two two two questions what was the name of the company that supplied the lighting av chicago so av chicago av chicago so we'll give them a shout out yes definitely that would be great and when is freaky friday running uh next week i believe so uh wednesday thursday friday and saturday it's only gonna be open to uh parents and like friends of the cast though so will it be live streamed as well um maybe i there's been talk about that but i don't know if it's true or not i think yeah i think they're working party okay so if you if you're not if you're not uh lucky enough to go you can watch it [Music] um but there's an opportunity to watch if you probably if you don't make it so great so break a look [Laughter] thank thanks thank you thank you zoe and sam oh okay okay hi guys um so i'm just gonna let you know about some of the things that have been going on since we've all seen each other last um most exciting this past weekend we had spring snowball which was open to the entire school which was really cool um there was like a limit for how many people though but it was open to everybody and it was free to attend and from what i saw from their social media and what i heard from other students it went really great um last week was also world language week which i thought was pretty interesting to follow along with people were posting with flat marty and people were cooking new dishes listening to music and appreciating different cultures also in activities our dgs group interpretation team post placed fifth in state which was really cool and there were also five students that earned all-state distinctions in that group and group interpretation group um so quick shout out to faith nelson gwen royal ryan rosignal sydney richardson and sammy wiggins and also key club held a virtual 5k since we've seen each other last to benefit dupage pads and then finally south also competed in the very first and hopefully only virtual deca competition that was really exciting i heard there were many students that finished in the top 10 in that competition and a special congrats to bobby grogan who placed first in human resource management and kyridin muradov who placed first in the stock market game they'll move on to the international career development conference and everyone did great you already heard a little bit about some of the spring sports that are going on and some of the ways that they're being reimagined another quick highlight about some sports going on at south is our football team which is doing pretty well this past friday i believe they won their game against morton and both eli reed and ryan dawson both varsity football team members were nominated for athlete of the week last week i think eli actually scored like three touchdowns in the last game i don't know enough about football but i think that's really impressive yeah and then in the arts with classes back in session it's been really great our music groups have been able to perform together for the first time which so nice i know like personally my choir teacher is really excited to have kids back in the building and actually hearing them and also what is it the national scholastic art and writing awards in our arts program ashley deanda won a silver medal with her photograph called no direction and then finally dgs drama finally finished filming their musical as well which is going to be high school musical junior they'll be producing that in the next coming weeks and it should be released within probably a couple weeks maybe at the beginning of may so keep an eye out for that and then yeah honestly the last couple of things i wanted to shout out mrs toth who was recognized by the national board for professional teaching standards as a national board certified teacher i think that's a really high honor and it's really exciting for her and then yeah honestly everybody seems really excited to be back in school after spring break what i've been hearing from students that are in person is that they're just really like so thrilled to be like with each other and then what i've also heard from remote students is that they appreciate the scheduling it was a little a little rocky as any schedule change would be in the beginning but it's getting easier now and the biggest thing i've heard other than that for remote students is just remind teachers that we're still here and that just keep on doing what you're doing and we really appreciate and understand how exciting it is for everybody to be together in person and that you know we'll keep getting better at being good students and finding new ways to teach and then yeah that's about it also just wanted to say shout out to shirelle and terry for their election this past spring break thank you all right uh on the dgn side of things uh as robbie said obviously we've got freaky friday coming out and that's been really cool from what i've been able to see it seems like everybody's been putting in a lot of great work in that and i'm really excited to see how it turns out also in the fine arts world our marching band and color guard were able to perform at last friday's football game and the team lost to oprf but it was still a great experience in the fine arts perspective and in the student perspective because they allowed i think it was about 100 students to be able to go to the game mainly seniors but then they opened it up to a few juniors as well and from personal experience i can tell you it was one of the most fun nights i've had in the last year or so and i think that's just a token of you know how the administration and you guys the board are are just you know trying to walk that line of um keeping people safe but then also creating more opportunities for students to socialize and be happy and i think that was a great success last friday so in other sports news as i said soccer boys soccer is just finishing up as are some of the other spring sports girls volleyball is doing extremely well and then we've got some summer sports starting track and field got their first meet on saturday baseball has begun to practice girls soccer head tryouts lacrosse softball tennis volleyball wrestling they're all starting so it's really really great to see people at north every time i walk up to soccer practice the campus is always buzzing and it really reminds me of pre-covered times and it gives me hope for the future and it's just so great to see people and talk to people and socialize so school is great but then also the extracurriculars being back i think adds another dimension um and another you know set of or another layer of confidence for students and for teachers and for administrators about getting back to normal uh in terms of clubs and extracurriculars the omega i just want to give a personal shout out um the omega newspaper and cauldron yearbook just competed in sectionals this weekend um so it's it's sectionals just like any sport would be we just uh came in on a saturday and did it virtually and everybody um competed in a certain writing or design event um and it was really fun we'll hear back about those results this week and whoever places in the top three in their category will move on to the journalism and yearbook state competition on the 24th so that should be great and the omega also plans to have a print issue including a special senior issue like we normally do every year which will be distributed near the last day of school slash maybe at prom for seniors so this will be the first prentice issue since february 2020 so i think that's another token and another sign of just things getting back to normal and things uh things are really looking up i think in a lot of different ways um and that brings me to just the general mindset i think students seem to love being back in general i think the schedule is much better in terms of seeing other people especially the people that were in the opposing side of the alphabet that you really couldn't see at all in the old schedules so it almost feels like you're seeing a whole other set of students like double the amount of people and born and i've heard a lot of people say it's just like normal school but with masks so i think that we're really approaching um that sense of normalcy and i think that this is really really good for people's social emotional well-being um and just being able to see people i think i've been the happiest i've ever been in a while just in the last two weeks just because i've been able to see so many friends that you know i hadn't seen in a year or so so um and i think seniors just really seem to be excited about prom and graduation and everything that's coming up so you know i think everything's just going really really well in general and i think everybody's happy to be back thank you quick question so how's how's the snack thing working out i think it's very beneficial um because i think that it does well to split up a very long period and it also brings in the food that i feel like people would go crazy without because with i mean your the lunch break or not having lunch is is kind of terrible at least for me in terms of like my normal eating schedule but that snack definitely brings that burden down so i think that in terms of like health-wise like actually eating it's great and then also in terms of getting a break from a super long class period is great as well so i think that it might be a little inconvenient because i know at least for me uh during that period it's kind of staggered so students in the hallway all go out at different times so a lot of the period is noisy while it's my class is being taught because there's always students coming in and out at different intervals but that's really the only negative i can think of i mean i think everything else is great it's a nice break during the class and it's it's a good opportunity to eat food um and also a good opportunity to socialize like we were able to go outside at least for my class that i have a snack break during and talk to people distanced and just you know get some fresh air so i think it's good okay i just wanted to remind teachers not to forget snack break i've been hearing a lot about that i know they have like a million things on their mind during classes trying to figure it out but don't forget we're hungry school year update uh before we get into the superintendent's report um we have a recognition here for uh president kupka so this says dear members this is to the board and close please find a certificate of appreciation to your board member for serving on the iasb executive committee for the 2019 through term please recognize the time and effort your board member devotes to serving the entire iasb division at your next scheduled board meeting now this certificate recognizes their dedicated service to others leadership and striving to achieve the association's mission of building excellence in local school governance with gratitude and thanks t molinari who is the director of field services for isb the dupage division so you get a nice little letter and then a little certificate of appreciation thank you for your support unexpected honor thank you all right uh so just a few quick things today uh the first one is is i don't need to do a report sam and zoe did it for me so thank you we do have 71 percent of students across the district returning in person that number's higher at north and it's south students though are continuing to switch models and you know as students are finding out that it's a good experience i expect we'll continue to see over the course of the next few weeks we still want to encourage as many students to come back as as possible if you're still thinking about it as a student or a parent send them back we're glad to have them here as you can hear it's a good experience for our kids the first week was pretty successful we had some slight logistical thing you know snacks buses you know it's all brand new but nothing that we couldn't work through and uh we made some tweaks for this week this week's a little different too with sat tomorrow and an alternative schedule today uh and you've the board has seen the public has seen i'll go into it in a little bit uh about uh contact case tracing close contacts is the kind of the next iteration or challenge that comes along with having more students back in person both for instruction and activities in athletics as you've heard tonight moving forward the administrative team we are all planning every time we have a question that comes up about what are we doing next year we are planning as if we are back pre-covered with whatever restrictions are placed on us whether that be masks or distancing or you know whatever's there but every time a question comes up about what will this be next year we go back to what was it like before covet was here that's what we're driving and planning towards obviously there's there's going to be a myriad of issues that we need to work through but the baseline is get back as close to normal as possible for the next school year one of those key things right now is calculating lunch space making sure that if we need to be socially or physically distanced during lunch that we have enough space for that all of the new common space coming online is going to be hugely important for that but we're also looking at additional outdoor seating if we need some i'm serving on the isbee planning group for fall return we've had several meetings on what that would be there's a meeting for just superintendents on thursday uh that i got information on so i'll be participating in that and then we're investigating possibilities for student vaccination clinics uh that's still very undetermined at this point we understand pfizer is available for 16 or older starting i think this week but we expect that the emergency authorization for 12 and older to be coming soon i'm in discussions with kotocare who is our provider that did it for our staff to see if we could set up clinics for our students but we're still in that same cycle of acquiring vaccines as a challenge so if we're able to create that and create possibilities for students that wish to be vaccinated for parents that wish to get their students vaccinated to come in and do that we're going to continue working on that for the rest of the school year and over the summer until that's a possibility and just an update on staff we're at ninety percent of our staff are fully vaccinated five percent are in progress and then we continue to have about five percent that due to uh medical concerns uh have not yet been vaccinated so uh that's kind of where we're at right now so questions on any of that before i get into close contact stuff and contact person just uh and you may not know the answer to this but just out of curiosity for student vaccination clinics do we need to have the fear come in i have no idea at this point yet yeah i'm sure like anything there would have to be an authorization of some sort yeah yeah there'd have to be consent of some sort but still working through how that would look all right and then uh contact tracing this is a document that's up on our website under the metrics on the 21 2021 update page and the way that this document works is that every friday we update it or every monday morning we update it with everything we knew as a friday for the week before but over usually monday tuesday wednesday we're still tracking down instant incidents from the the week before so by the end of this week we'll have an absolute number for the week of april 5th for last week so this is kind of where we stood midday today you can see naturally the number of close contacts has grown greatly this week this past week we have far more students back we have far more students involved in activities in athletics and in far more students riding buses and in classrooms we have some classrooms where physical distancing is less than six feet by the new allowed by the new guidance so a combination of all of that has driven up the number of close contacts that we've tracked down at school so what a close contact is as we look at this and this one out in today's email this is the the information that went out in today's email everybody received that um but if you're within six feet of somebody who is tested positive for covid for 15 or more minutes you're a close contact once and that might be less than 15 minutes if you're in a high risk sport or activity that process is all done and outlined from illinois department of public health dupage county health department ultimately has the oversight over contact tracing and quarantining and in that dupage county health department has told us someone is deemed to be a close contact they are quarantining for 14 days i know there's a variety of options out there for people in different settings under different circumstances with testing we have been told by the dupage county health department once you're close contact you're quarantining for 14 days there is not a 7 or 10 day option in dupage county for schools so that's we have no recourse to operate differently that's how we must operate so students are then they're close contacts are quarantined for 14 days they can return back to school and their activities after that while they're on quarantine they can't participate in any in-person activities whether that be instruction or activities or athletics or or any of those things that are going on there's different things for people that are vaccinated or have recently had a covid we worked through each of those with a health office in the health department but while students are in quarantine and they're not participating in in-person activities or instruction we're still doing concurrent instruction with those students just along with all the students that have chosen fully remote so they're still with their teacher in the remote version of their classroom with their classmates um so that's the information that we sent out to everybody today um i think it's just you know it's changing guidelines it's a new schedule it's more people back and uh it's you know conflicting guidance depending on where you look what you see what you you know maybe somebody at work had different in their workplace had different guidance than when a student has with us as it's gone all year it's a difficult matrix to work through and we appreciate everybody just cooperating and working through it and being patient with the process so that's kind of what's going on with back to school so any questions all right uh this next one will uh oh this is not an action item tonight this is an action and i'm on the 19th sorry that's wrong on the slide so uh next monday we'll bring this for action but this is a recommendation from the administration that we waive all summer school tuition fees for this summer except for drivers education we'll offset those costs through a combination of grant funding each year and we just feel like this is the right thing to do for students that are trying to recover credit uh you know just based on the response to the pandemic so this will come next week uh any just preliminary questions from board members on this to be clear of industries all in district students out of district tuition would remain yes yeah thank you this is good i agree yeah gina has done a lot of work on grants and funding and has pulled a lot of resources together here so all right this will come back next week um the next agenda item is uh just a recognition of our staff members that are achieving tenure a reminder tenure is granted by the state in one of three ways one is the traditional pathway after four years of being a teacher on our staff with proficient or excellent ratings and you come back year after year then in your fifth year you're granted tenure by the state the next option would be accelerated ten years which would be tenure which would be in your fourth year after three years of excellent ratings would move in to that the other way is in two years where if you were proficient or excellent in another school district came here and then were excellent here after two years you would move into that 10-year track by the state so in your third year so this is the list of all of our wonderful teachers that have made it through one of those pathways to achieve tenure and get that granted by the state your the memo for the board outlines each pathway for each one of our our teachers as requested by the board so any questions on that all right the next one uh is something we started working on as a board when we had our self-evaluation i think in december and this kind of fell by the wayside as we were working on variety of responding and returning to school plans but one of the goals of this board was before this board's term ended and that's coming soon that we would agree to or the board would agree to a set of the protocols so this was started in december i then went through and made sure that it truly reflected everything that we had talked about julie went through thank you julie and linked to all of the board policies in there that reference uh how the board is to work and to behave and came together with this document i think captures how the board has worked over the last two years and even before that so this is kind of the first reading of these protocols for the board if there's something you would like to see changed over the next week please reach out to nancy and i and we'll make any revisions or consider those and get them into a finalized document to come for approval by the board next monday the intention is that this document gets reviewed the board does a yearly board self-evaluation with the illinois association of school boards ours is scheduled for our returning board members june 2nd put that on your calendar at 6 30 where we will have our starting right workshop with dee will come back to visit with us and work us through that and this will be one of the core documents that we revisit and with our two new board members revise and change and make any tweaks to it because that would be then our guidelines that we're operating by as a team moving forward so and then each year when we have those those meetings that whatever board and superintendent are here can work through that and know how to operate moving forward so any questions on that nope please get any recommendations for changes to nancy and i by thursday so that we can get that out to you in advance of the weekend all right master facility plan still uh on time and ahead of budget uh just a couple of pictures of the auditorium down the way here it's starting to look like an auditorium and then south high commons is just beautiful on the way out board members as you go down that hall you can actually turn and walk into the commons and get a view of it because we do have a hallway that's open that students use you can actually poke your head in and get a peek at it and then over at north high their commons project coming along really well you can see the glass or as the construction folks call it glazing i'm always like what what's cleaning yeah glass the glass and the the commons is all getting in place and you can see uh the meeting rooms that's that purple box at the top uh over overlooking the commons coming into shape um next week and the week after next week the core committee uh will go on a tour of south high they have not met uh in person for quite a while now so we're going to come back and do a physically distanced walking tour of the construction at south high and then the week after that we'll go on a walking tour at north high we intend to bring the board hopefully next week white is releasing a certain amount of contingency for us to use for kind of our next list of projects so we're going to bring you a recommendation for projects that we didn't expect would be able to get done under the master facility plan but we believe that we will and it'll look a lot like capital outlay how we do that process where we come and give you our list of priorities and we're going to try to make it through as many of these priorities as possible so we're meeting with our construction teams this week to finalize that and then that'll be part of our conversation next monday all right so any questions on master facility plan all right that's it for superintendent reports okay we'll move on to the reception for visitors this is an opportunity for audience members to address the board on any topic pertaining to community high school 99 is there anybody this is an opportunity to address the board thank you on any topic pertaining to community high school district 99 is there anybody here to address the board tonight hearing none we'll move on is there anything online let me check the virtual i'm sorry i just have to refresh here i always forget the board all right we have received um one two three three comments um two of them that raised concerns about i read these beforehand so two of them that raised concerns about returning and wishing that we had students back more and providing feedback as to how we should do that and then one comment that is thanking us for bringing students back and uh continuing to do what we're doing to get students back into into school so as always these uh comments will be well the board has access to them at all times but will uh be forwarded to the board after this meeting and become part of the official minutes all right next i'm going to ask for a motion to go into closed session we will not be taking any action when we come out of closed session tonight so we need a motion for the to go to closed session for the appointment employment compensation discipline performance or dismissal of specific employees specific individuals who serve as independent contractors in a park recreational or educational setting or specific volunteers of the district or legal counsel of the district including hearing testimony on a complaint logic against an employee a specific and so dave was right there in the running for class 4a again so we've got tremendous administrator support this year um let's talk about this group we started the first of february normally we had two tournaments regionals and states this year the state thought with with cobit and numbers and everything else let's put together a gauntlet and let's start at the first weekend in february and we're going to wrestle for four weekends in a row and wrestle through that so literally we started at what was called the district tournament and you had to be in the top four to move on to the regional tournament which was hosted here you had to finish in the top four to move into what was called sub-state that's what we considered state day one because typically at that point you had the top 16 wrestlers in the state that were left from that standpoint and then the top four wrestlers moved on to salina for the last day of the state championship series so that's how that works we have eight one of them is not here catherine's not here with us but on the girls side um let's go through i'm going to start down the far end brylee itch bradley finished sixth at the state championship this year she also sang the national anthem prior to the championship ceremonies helping me tonight is part of our coaching staff we have three other coaches on our staff coach tim johnson he's got baseball tonight tim is the boys uh the lead boys assistant coach coach mike damon is the girls lead assistant coach and coach petrie is our jv coach this year our next one's samuel griffin just the second year wrestler and finishes one of the top 10 finds in the state and with one match away a grand state alternate if you will samuel griffin [Applause] next to him a three-time state qualifier and one of the top-ranked 145 pounders in the state and eastern kansas was loaded the four top guys in his group that he finished fifth all basically finished in the top five at that grand state championship so a loaded bracket our next wrestler damon hoback 160 pounds state medalist fourth place next to him rebecca schaefer she was a first year wrestler for us and she finished as a grand state alternate she took sixth at the state at the state sub state tournament which meant she was one match away from going on to salinas and these last two young ladies are three-time state qualifiers now and they they are now both state medalists mj huff finished in third place at the state championship in salina and ale mccartney finished in fifth place at the state championship in addition you got to point out real quick this crew on the girls side first team academic all-state in the entire state of kansas finished fifth fifth over eighth overall out of all the teams in the girls division this year [Applause] out of 58 boys teams our boys finished 11th academically to earn first team all-state honors academically as well last but not least the peace forward step up riley ish katherine lord whose catherine is not with us samuel griffin kaden birkemeyer academic all-state first team have you guys step back and then i'm excited to announce this last one that has just come out they don't even know about this one each year the national high school coaches association puts together the academic all-american list since 2007 burlington high school wrestling has more academic all-americans than any other program in the state of kansas this year we've added two more to that list i'm very excited about that if miss bradley ish would step forward and if kaden birkenmeier would step [Applause] forward on gpa their grade point average and their consistent career performance of four years of high school wrestling so outstanding job board thank you for letting me introduce them to you tonight thank you thank you okay um the next agenda item is for our board vacancy that we have and we have two letters of interest that came to the district uh one's mr austin burke one mr ron hess you guys strategically replaced in the back of the room we would ask you to come down and sit with us so we can talk not scream um the board has options of leaving the position open until a vote by the public we can leave the position open until it's voted by the public and then that uh position will be filled january one next year we're getting a point and that's why we have uh these gentlemen here to discuss and talk about tonight um it's really not to me to put you down here on the spot so we can talk more face-to-face um we've the board all has a copy of some letters that you guys have given us talk about expressing a you know desire to serve for the board and we very much appreciate that i think everyone's read and understands that uh to that end i'll open up the rest of the board for um questions or comments that you'd like to have you guys want to have a conversation about it well one of the questions is why do you want to be a board member so first yeah well i was just made aware that the vacancy came up came open and i just felt like i needed to step forward just to have a good possibility of someone to get in there and i feel like i have worked in different environments with the school whether i coached i coached for uh wrestling for baseball high school middle school i've also done some substitute teaching for the school done some parasubbing for the school so i've kind of seen that side of it also done a lot of stuff through work with volunteering for the school so i thought that you know i might have a good set of skills that could come in and maybe help help out a little bit and uh i thought i should throw away a hat well that's a tough act to follow likewise i don't have the greatest qualifications for the position but i do have i am alumni of bhs i did start here in elementary school i do care about the community and i just wanted to make sure that there was multiple names that could be selected by the board i feel like i could bring a you know a no opinion banner to this whole board and keep an open mind on stuff okay um so the school board involves a little bit of time um you saying volunteered in austin you're out of the plant right uh i i'm with the fair board i work with the city of bronx okay but so the time constraints are once a month for this meeting but there's also some in between monthly meetings things that come up you you see a problem with uh like a 30-minute special usually the special meetings or for something like a bid for equipment or school issues like roofs or something that we have to talk about either you see an issue with being able to meet that need for the board i mean we're usually pretty open about what time that happens but yeah my position right now is pretty flexible unless i'm on a certain situation that would tie me up but usually 30 minutes is not a big deal about breaking away for a short period of time unless we're involved in something that is pressing yeah yeah and usually special meetings have probably a day or two flex right sure that can be amazing and luckily i worked in eight to five monday through friday with an hour lunch period so i'm pretty flexible on anytime one of the most important things i can think of is just you care about the community you you put your all into it that takes somebody who cares that wants to make the community better make the school district better and and that takes time and just a commitment you're willing to do it i think that's something i can offer i can see values and being able to listen because i think that's a lot of the job because you've got people coming in talking to you telling you that they have a problem and you know assisting and listening uh working together with other people interpersonal communication skills and then you know uh working with within your means looking at policy reviewing that and you know sticking within the scope of what you control because there's there's things that are that happen that are out of our control but staying in that scope and controlling what you control and um i feel like your main role is to listen to your administrators from what i can tell listen to your administrators help them get their job done they're going to come to you guys saying that they need this or that and to help them facilitate what they need and on the flip side students are wanting to bring up something that they feel like they need to talk about you know having that forum to be able to listen to them and take that information work with your administrators and see if you can come to compromise move i think that's kind of and you know that's that's on the forefront also you know on the back side with um you know uh the financing making sure that the school's uh running efficiently and and i know that falls on administrators but they um you know balancing out with the board from what i can see from the outside looking at likewise keeping an open mind keeping your personal agenda out of it make the best educated decision for the kids and the school industry that's what it's about in my opinion okay the mike you have any questions for these two gentlemen not anything specific selena i don't have anything additional thank you um with that being said it's kind of up the board now to if one member feels that we should fill a position while these gentlemen could fill that force we can make a motion for one to fill it or it can be left vacant until the november election this position right does come up for election in november so if it is filled now uh there will be an auction in november where that person is either reelected or something comes up or somebody else or that person maybe it's not for them they don't want to do it someone else steps into it so with that i would entertain any motions from the board is everybody having an opinion about leaving it open until january if we don't make a decision now will be an election in november and then january 1st that individual starts or we want to build tonight we can i know that from now until january 1st seems like a long time i think a seven person board is more of a representational community we do have a part of the southwest part of burlington where you guys reside and you're not in the country a little bit where there is currently no representation and i think that i agree that ought to be allowed for those people to have a representation and if someone wants to come in here about it they can do it and so that's kind of my point to it we got you know what eight months until that next person might serve so we'll make a motion yeah i agree that we need to fill it okay i'll make a motion to a point iran has usc 244 board member district 4 effective april 13 2021.

2021-04-13 Washtenaw County, MI YouTube / CTN Ann Arbor transcript source: youtube Ann Arbor Housing Board of Appeals Meeting 4/13/21 · passage 2
thank you and i'll second those all in favor please say hi all right minutes have been approved moving on to unfinished business is there any unfinished business before we get to new business i'm letting it linger because sometimes it's tricky to get unmuted but i don't see anyone jumping jumping at the bit okay we will move on to new business which is um hba21001 variants for 566a kellogg ann arbor michigan 48105 um can we have the staff report please who's giving that today hi kristin i will be giving that great thank you so the applicant has applied for an appeal uh with regards to the ventilation requirements under our housing building code and one second here so they request the variance we have uh requests for ventilation requirements i will tell you that there was a in the inspection there was light and ventilation indicated however light is not does not need an appeal as it they can provide proper artificial lighting the ventilation requirement of four percent of the ventilation of floor area for the habitable room has not been met i will tell you that the building was built accordingly it did not meet the requirements under the code at that time which was actually ten percent requirements so somewhere in the process it missed that uh their requirement they are now appealing our four percent ventilation requirements that's under the current code uh as i might mention and i'm not sure what you're used to or what you've experienced in the past as this is my first time to the hba you have a standards for approval and they require pr um they have three op you have three options practical difficulties are unnecessary hardships or the variance does not violate the intent of the chapter and the variance does not jeopardize public health and safety so the recommendation um is probably seen in your your notes there staff recommended that the variants now be granted as there are alternatives that if implemented would meet the requirements of the building code small ventilation to the area as i had mentioned this building was built back and was under the codes back when the boca days were involved and um it was required to be 10 percent of the area and was not built appropriately unfortunately were here at this time frame and uh that would be staff staff would not uh let's see one moment so staff would not recommend uh leaning away from this and would uh recommend denial of this as there are other options to create that for that four percent requirement i'm all said kristen if there's any questions on that all right thanks glenn does the board have any questions for glen our staff uh i i have a question for glenn was a calculation performed to see how close it is i think on the applicants they gave dimensions that i don't know if the city agrees with from which you could calculate the percent ventilation based on square footage but i wonder if that was done by city staff it was looked at and while the it seems like it's not that much it actually is a fair amount it wouldn't be a requirement of a whole nother window but there there you'll be a much larger window than what currently is is in place okay do you can you sit tell on a percentage basis so how close it is um you know what i do have the inspector in um brandon do you have any um comments on that uh i notated it as being two square feet short thank you a new uh um glad i mentioned some relatively easy fixes so ventilation i'm just curious what that would look like in that room that window looks like it kind of splits in the middle at a mansured roof so i'm not sure if you're talking like a wall ventilation that would go out into that mansard and down into the soffit or and i know it's not your job to design it but i'm just curious you know typically what would be done in a situation like that to provide some kind of powered vent so there could be a possibility of a couple options one would be bringing in fresh air from the outside of course location i'm not sure exactly where that could be placed appropriately but i will tell you that another option that would probably work would be a continuous working bath fan which brings in um we'll move that air around and and take care of the issue that would generally be designed by you know the mechanical um contractor would get involved with that type of uh situation and could provide the documentation okay thank you thanks jerry that was one of the questions i had as well any other questions for staff all right i think we have the appellant here and we received your appeal so do you want to give us a little bit of information about what you're appealing and why please introduce yourself and provide is it your address that you normally provide i think yes location okay uh i'm marnie do you mean my address of the property or the address where i currently yeah i think that could be where you're currently located and then if you want to give the address of the location of the for the appeal okay um sorry i'm a little nervous uh i'm marnie smiley i'm in chicago illinois and my property is 566 kellogg apartment a ann arbor michigan 48 105.

that's just what we have right now anyway so it's very um if you're trying to save messages which i save a ton of messages i have folders like crazy you run out of space very quickly would be a caution if it's set up the same way um so in order for me to see a message that came in last october i would have to either create another folder and move all of those messages into another folder so i could see the 40 or 50 from that person that came before um or delete them that's really the only option so like i'm not sure exactly where you're going with this i just want to make sure that we use caution the time will come when i'm not here to share that but it's something i've experienced because i get literally hundreds so i think it could just be our office schools have a limit to the number of messages that it's allowing inboxes to be shown anyway that's something i could work with whenever i open my tabletop account basically i get every email that has ever been sent there on one page and it always starts me at the bottom of the page which is the oldest email on there and i've gone and you know cleaned up and said delete these emails there's dozens of there when i delete them it just puts a line through them and they're still there so it makes it no easier to go through mine yours actually gets rid of them okay okay you'll get emails from me asking you to send me gift cards and all that good stuff that's happening advertisements [Music] on this that is a problem for us it's probably being spam and also actually hacking we've already talked about how i get emails from marsha that aren't from marsha pretty regularly yeah but my question is i understand that a good way to keep that from happening is to publish an image like a jpeg of the email address rather than a link to the email address is that something that you would suggest or some other information on the website yeah to avoid all that spam that we got yeah that probably might help but it's uh it's hard but i was gonna say it's hard to block the fishing because uh um fishing doesn't really try to bypass technology there's no um attachments or anything so so they can send an email and and then that might help but i don't think it but we thank you thank you for coming the next order of business is the proposed budget test it's that time of year um current staff says um i wanted to review this person you have a folder look something like what is on the board uh [Music] a capital budget in december when we tend to find out they're not the final first recreation budget over 500 000 and we um i was given the assignment by ms burns to reduce the common budget from fiscal year 21 to this figure 22 by a quarter of that dollar and this is due to a loss of student enrollment because of the code shutdown this is not unique in downtown auto i've read two figures initially 55 000 students in the state of arizona from public schools this past fiscal year the last number i saw was 35 000.

so that's part of what we need to do is transition those back there's something uh one thing that i thought about that i haven't even talked to to the other two about is we're going to come off an energy savings project um that's going to free up i think is it a hundred and a quarter or something like that ballpark yes uh 125 000 that we're spending to pay for our energy savings projects that's a loan that will go back into mnl that we've been taking out of mnl so that's one thing that we can do to cover some of those expenses so that is something that has been a priority in this discussion is we need to come up with a plan on how to exit that out and if the m o doesn't come back to cover some of these there may be down the road some positions that we cut due to attrition or with attrition not people but empty positions if the kids don't come back we don't need those positions so that that's definitely been a discussion that's definitely a concern good question and the last one esr3 so we got 436 000 with sr1 uh 1.57 million with sr2 we are thinking between three and four million for sr3 probably closer to four than three we have to spend that by october of 2024 so that gives us just over three years to do that uh 20 has to be go towards addressing learning loss one of the big expenses that will come out of that is summer school so summer school will be part of that 20 other interventions which could be friday school tutoring additional years of summer school so there's a variety of things um the grant hasn't even opened yet we haven't even been given our allocation officially yet so the the three to four million is an estimate based on other ones whether based on the information that you know so um kind of waiting on that but um again the only requirement is the 20 to address learning loss that's what six to seven hundred thousand dollars john is that from the current paris uh actually i think it was the american recovery plan or last year's but the current month of congress was just correct that was the one that people got fourteen hundred dollars um most people got four hundred dollars per person right that's what that this was related i think it's a new source of federal funding correct correct this might be a stupid question but how do you assess learning loss i mean you know we're kind of would project where you think the child should be but they're very short right and so really it's it's true you know we can have we have different assessments that we can do to identify where they should be just like you say and then address those kind of similar to how we identify kids that go into title 1 and things like that yes i presume you can also attract individual kids on the performance in earlier grades versus current performance oh yeah you could do a kid by kid or a cohort or school bicycle all those are available to me i think that would be a great way to tailor your your learning loss program because if we have a computer ability to track that simply saying yes you know a lot of that's done already because you know you know the principles know what kids are struggling the teachers know what kids are struggling that's communicated to the principles um you know if you go to some of these and i don't know how much they do do it anymore but it used to be all these red and yellow and green dots on the wall to figure out which kids are at grade level which ones are struggling a little bit which ones are well below and all that stuff and so that's something that they're doing at the schools all the time yeah any questions on esser mike so john master three um three to four million dollars that's significant yes one-time opportunity to spend that money yes um any thoughts on how that may might be spent well other than the 20 which we know has to go towards learning loss um it could bring you know we had talked about bringing in additional staff um that would you know it's just like kind of when we bring in staff on grants we know that once the grant goes away that those people may go away as well um you know a lot of the technology that we were hoping for was covered in with the prior two grants but it could be additional technology um you know we're still kind of evaluating that we just really we just got finished with esser2 and we haven't thought a whole lot um about sr-3 i'll be talking to the principals too mr fogle like for example we have a grant that pays for counselor counselors at two two of our schools that never happen we have one school that doesn't so some of those social and emotional supports there are things like that that people have expressed some need for over time and so now that like mr schultz said we got through a lot of okay we can we have money for technology and can get all that up just that snuff gives us a chance to to really look and see how we can provide some of that support in our schools too so we'll be looking forward to hearing about the wish lists that everybody probably already has yeah i just worry about um being able to sustain especially when we're talking about personnel that's why we spent money on buses and technology and step out of the first two and then with the eight positions that mr schultz talked about certified positions that will come out of sr2 that gives us a little over half almost six hundred thousand dollars relief in mno for next year and it gives us a little time to tread water and see how much enrollment may or may not rebound and then as he explained the eight positions will carry next year in to fall well within our normal rates of attrition so we could fold staff back in that one we're pretty careful about just to make sure exactly what you're asking is that we that we can preserve those jobs the other thing to remember and and john you probably build a number what was our loss in dollar wise when it came to the distance learning how much did we lose because of distance learning the first from from from the adopted in july of till the december revision was 432 700 because that was the percentage that worked in the classroom basically right we're at home and that's what it cost us 400 then i got it done in march and we ran it was only 370 000 because that percentage had come down but yeah so you know let's just throw four hundred thousand dollars that we lost because of distance learning that hopefully we won't lose next year because hopefully we won't be in distance yeah yeah so that that's a that's something as long as we maintain the the numbers that we have now that's money that's going to come back um with those kids remaining and just being in the classroom and not being online so um the other thing is uh and i talked to um we're a part of a group called brass rollers on a school coalition and they have a a lobbyist and i spoke to the lobbyists this morning there's a push as part of the budget process to actually take that five percent loss in adm related to the distance learning there's still a push to put that in the budget and give us a hundred percent of that so we could potentially grab that three to four hundred thousand let's say four hundred thousand dollars this year once the budget is done we're trying to help create a little cushion right for ourselves so i you know i think that the future looks rosy budget wise but really we have sr2 and sr3 to make sure that if it's not that we can get through it okay yeah get through it in the in the short term correct right but it gives us time to plan like i said if we need if the if you know this year and i was going to talk about this when we talked about increases this year my goal was not to cut any positions because we don't know what next year's going to look like we already know people are coming back so i wanted to keep the positions the same and then a year from now once things are stabilized and we know where we are we can make a much more informed decision on the positions that we cut if we need to hopefully we don't it's giving us the luxury of buying a little bit of time yeah right and it at the same time and mr schultz talk about it later provide some of those raises that we need if adm doesn't rebound then of course it's we're outside our staffing model and overstaffed going into next year but it allows us to remain overstaffed if we don't rebound you know our kinder class right now is unusually small and i think part of that is people just kept their kids home rather than send them to school which that's a decision that each family needs to make on their own those kids we may get all those kids you know and we have six-year-olds that have never been to school and you know we've talked about plans on how to address that but that's a good problem to have i want that problem you know i want those kids in school and hopefully they've been doing things at home with their families and are ready to come back to school and okay and if not we have we want to put plans in place to address that but we could hopefully you know ideally my i would love if we were at 2200 kids august 2nd or august whatever fourth when we started that would be awesome and i think it's um a it's not out of reach so and that is the number that we used in the july of 2020 budget adoption for the current year 2200 students exactly right and we're getting those you know i think we'll get those kids back you know there's probably a lot of kids in primavera or other online programs that are just kind of right now school year and once august 4th comes they'll be ours again so you know your concern is very valid it's something that we've discussed something that concerns us as well and we think we have enough time to address this um and you know if esser hadn't happened even you know if sr2 hadn't happened it'd be a different story so we have fortunately we have the resources to be able to um you know write this out at least a year keep the positions and the staff that we have not make any cuts and kind of get back to normal hopefully and then we can adjust as necessary okay thank you any other questions on esser adjacent waves um this is something that the the governing board approves annually um a hundred thousand dollar levy um i was truly questioning whether we would actually do one in july uh we've always had kind of a plan in place to to spend that money and i didn't want to just collect it without having a plan in place and so a couple things we have some money now that we're actually going to use to support the project at the farm they need that those buildings that are being built are two thousand feet in yeah two thousand feet from the street the fire department is requiring a road that needs their specifications to for a fire truck to ride online they need a fire lane basically all the way back into that facility adjacent waves money can be used for a of ireland okay the second thing is and that's what money the funds that we have right now the second thing is um i was in a conversation actually related that private you know we were talking to the town related to that project the building department and they brought up the fact that there's going to be some improvements over on one east and i say near future three to five years where they do some work in front of the community center sidewalks curbs and gutters and that kind of thing and in talking with them we'd like to extend that up to mayhem in front of the in front of territorial and that would be a piggyback on their project it's been working fantastic when we basically give the town the money and they do the work for us uh or they hire their contractors to do the work for us and that's worked fantastic that's how we've done the expansion of the intersection at two north and one west the recent bus lane project was done that way the sidewalks curbs and gutters here at the high school were done that way and so it would take a couple years of that hundred thousand dollars to save up to do that project but that would be the target project with this money so um that's kind of i'm going to actually request that we do the adjacent ways levy in anticipation of that project and once we have that number then we can adjust it and if it's if we have extra that's fine we don't have to levy at that point if we don't have extra um the decision could be made how to love you at that point but that's kind of the future project that we'd like to aim towards it and save up the adjacent waste money for as a reminder adjacent ways money can only be used for improvements next are on the property line of school district property so a lot of times sidewalks curbs gutters uh the um the intersection at two north and one west those are all examples or on school property bus lanes and fire lanes so the road back here that's paved that goes to um the the bait's house and the baseball field that's paid that was paid using adjacent waves money the fire lane i'm sorry the bus lane behind uh heritage and del rio that was using adjacent ways money and then of course the project at the farm that will be using adjacent wastewater so questions on adjacent ways excellent so that's something uh john will take care of the advertising and all that stuff and it'll be part of the budget process in july that's what that'll happen another another hundred thousand dollars yeah the truth and taxation advertisement that goes in the paper we'll have a hearing all that stuff so we have actually a couple hearings in july we have the tooth and taxation hearing and we have the the adopted budget hearings and all that stuff yeah a coconut update you have attached to the last page in the benchmark that was uh i updated it um last week on thursday so right now uh the benchmarks and there's two which is percent positivity and cases for a hundred thousand are in the moderate and low transmission levels when you put those two together it's a um moderate transmission level and the guidance with the moderate transition level is full in-person instruction k-12 which is right where we're at right now okay so the benchmarks are supporting our method of instruction as we are doing right now um my anticipate things kind of just kind of hanging out hopefully through the next six weeks that we have not really going down not going up it's probably as have been happening the past three or four weeks is the cases and percent positivity just kind of seem to be leveled and that's okay um the number of cases in chino and paulden have been fairly low we're talking i think there was three over the weekend so it's usually uh paulden hasn't had one in a couple weeks you're excited about that i know yes cheeto maybe one a day on average is what we're looking at okay so fairly well since we've been all in person we've had no staff members on campus while positive unfortunately and it's happened like the last three weeks we've had six students three at the high school and three at the middle school that have been on campus while positive with clothing so they didn't know that they were positive at the time they tested afterwards but they were on campus unfortunately why they were positive as a result and these numbers are updated since i actually wrote this this morning we've had 85 students that we've had to quarantine because of those six students okay and one teacher so um unfortunately um and and when uh and this is what catherine verner does this is her her job is when she gets this call she talks to the teachers she gets seating charts she does figures out a circle of six feet around now social distancing is only three feet in a school but a close contact is six feet or closer for 15 minutes or longer in a 24 hour period so she does that circle finds out who was here who was close to that kiddo those are the kids um that have to be quarantined now there was a question what about the you know if my kid was within six feet but that but my kid was also close to somebody else a close contact of a close contact we don't worry about that could go forever it's just that one positive kid who was near them within six feet for 15 minutes or longer over 24 24 hour period okay um i know that that you all got some emails from some concerned parents very rightly so their kids are being uh quarantined for 14 days we are using the arizona department of health services guidelines the guidelines do say that there's shorter periods for quarantine the problem is in order to do that you have to wear masks we're all doing not a problem and you have to stay six feet away from everybody not three feet anymore you have to stay six feet away and when we have everyone in person our kids can't stay six feet away from each other and that's that's really the concern in the classroom in the classroom i mean i'm assuming here's where i feel bad about this whole thing is that we've taken enough from these kids in my personal opinion these kids miss their sports they miss school they miss their friends there's no way around this so there was a bill that just passed the legislature about liability for businesses and school districts not just it wasn't just on school districts but it was about basically government entities and businesses in general that gives us liability freedom of liability so it basically shelters us from lawsuits one of the keys to that is we are doing what we're supposed to be doing to prevent the spread of covet in our schools so if we allow if we allow you know we have this guidance that says 14 days from medical professionals from the people the the epidemiologists at the department of health services that are doing this that say this is what you should be doing if we don't follow that my belief is that we're opening ourselves up to liability because we aren't following what the guidance says we should be doing and think of it think about this so if you're if your child um was exposed by uh to some another child that had covered and we allowed that child to take phobia on campus as a parent i'd be i'd be furious i would be furious because you didn't do what you were supposed to do my kid got exposed now and potential and potentially the other eight that now have to hold you because the whole key is or the whole point is they haven't they they're exposed so they now have the potential to get the pull to get covered and if we allow them back and they have it and they spread it to other people because we're not following what the guidance says but what if they i mean i know that there's a lot of us what if they test what if they their tests come back negative what if their parents signed some type of form that said hey my kid's been working for seven days we've done this test in this test and they've came back negative we would like to sign something that says we are not going to come back to the school like is there is there something because like i said my biggest thing i think i would be upset that my kid had learning one because we're just getting back to school they're just getting back in the swimming things kids have struggled you know and then having to miss 14 days of school and then i look at sports wise you know these kids have missed a whole year last year that are you know going to go on or you know maybe this is their last year that they're ever going to play sports like is there not anything that we can do there's lots of things we can do but we're opening ourselves up to likely it's really what it said yeah because we if that kid you know and and i am i am not an expert i'm not a doctor i'm not an epidemiologist i'm relying on the guidance and the guidance says you can take a test to get to seven days or ten days but you gotta stay six feet apart that's the that's the key here we cannot keep our kids six feet apart from others when we're all in person that's you know if we could do that that would not be a problem at all and we can shortly it's that it's that's it's the caveat you gotta wear masks which we do you gotta do hand hygiene which we do all the other things we can take off that we do right except for keeping our kids further than six feet apart and that's that's the difficulty any other questions on the covet update a budget update so i again i spoke with our lobbyists this morning the budget they anticipate it's not going to be done until probably the middle of june which makes it tough on john it means that even you know we have to take a kind of a wild guess and then we're going to do a december revision if not earlier once we figure out what's going on but we will not you know we know what the minimums are going to be that's what we're based on but we know what the what the um inflation factor is going to be we know what the what the at a minimum what our new uh dollar amount per and weighted adm is going to be but there could be additional monies that that could come if they do the distance learning um at 100 percent or things like that um the state is also sitting on a fairly large um a lot of money because tax revenues have been better than than they anticipated so in addition to tax cuts that they're likely going to give there may be some additional money going towards stuff but we just don't know and we won't know probably for at least another four to six weeks a quick question we had a great presentation on the capital funding lawsuit last time any word out of phoenix that the legislature may be willing to slice more money in in order to minimize that potential that should go into court there's nothing that's in public that we know of okay so yeah it's all if it's happening it's too quiet still it's behind the scenes and yeah if it is happening i don't know it just seems to me and then i'm trying to be logical which is obviously stupid you know that would be the smartest thing they could possibly do right is to show up with all that extra you know rainy day money you know i'm just speaking for me but it just seems like that would be the clear clearly the smartest thing for them to do to get beyond this with this lawsuit now some of the things that they're talking about and this is kind of to mike's point earlier they're they're not just one-offs so it's something that has to be put in place for it would be like that inflation funding factor on capital which capital has been the same amount for do you know how long john i think it's been three years frozen at that level yeah so where the thing is for charter schools it isn't just adjusted to by inflation so it's just public schools public districts charters or public schools but just district schools that are haven't frozen where charter schools have a title inflation so it'd be like having that type of inflation there's some maybe some annual money what we used to call the um building renewal program so annual money to help us fix our facilities new carpeting when we need it a new air conditioner if we needed things like that so some of it is long-term money that needs to be sustained and so that's that's i think part of the concern is uh not just throwing up they have money now they could throw now money at it but it's how do you address it if it's supposed to you know and i could make it somebody else's problem down the road for the district too i don't want to do that you know we have to have an exit strategy to esther is not going to last forever and we need to have an exit strategy so we don't leave the district in the large the state you know it's there's several things that are that they're asking for um and um so we'll see i don't know but again we won't know till potentially beginning of june middle of june what the actual budget is i want to recognize our staff members of the month at territorial our teacher was madison finnell our classified was amber leeson at del rio our teacher was christina ballard our classified was greg rudder who's actually that um he's the um the dayporter that we hired using covet money so it's good to see him um he's actually doing a really good work at del rio heritage we have our edp team of our teacher alvarado and our classified casey jones over zdp is our emotionally uh special ed kids at the high school we have uh teacher cindy pierce and our health aide penny fetters and our district is not an employee but he he seems he's he serves us in really good ways it's our partnership with the town the jeff pizzi who's our school resource office school resource officer does a fantastic job and we want to recognize what he does as part of our staff and we also want to thank donna webb of the jed sandwich shop for her support of the staff members of the month she does a fantastic job gives him a little treat and a little gift card to go and get a sandwich at a later date so she does a good job lastly i reached out to you individually about changing the may board i'm sorry the june board meeting hey um mr fogle was gone the original day and the new day so he was gonna miss whatever day we picked um and then three of you um said that he could be there so um i'd like to change it to wednesday june 9th if possible uh if that's a concern let karen know otherwise we're going to go with that day and then hopefully uh mr livingston that's enough time to get that um uh the preliminary budget out and then you also we started to do a calendar of events since there's things that are going to be happening in the district that you may want to attend um again we just did we just changed the as the june governing board meeting from the 14th to the 9th but please put on your calendars graduation on may 26th 7 o'clock at the finley toyota center also that day at two o'clock we'll be having our district recognition of staff which is something that uh we used to have an ice cream social i think we're talking about ice cream bars or ice cream sandwiches something single served this time and then that is also our last day of school we have our main governing board meeting on the 10th a couple other things in july that in august that you may want to be part of or that we asked it to be part of we have the new teacher breakfast on july 22 an opportunity for you to meet our new staff members and to have a an awesome breakfast cooked in what i think is the best commercial kitchen in chino valley another another cte purchase that uh fantastic kitchen at the high school on august 2nd we have the all-staff breakfast in kickoff we're doing it a little bit we did it meant to do it a little bit different last year it just covered made everything different in the past we've had like the individual classes we're actually doing that as a google classroom and asking um staff to do it at a different time so they have a google classroom videos some quizzes that they take and everything else this is more of a there'll be a kind of a raw raw breakfast you'll get your picture taken there'll be some some vendors and then um we'll pass out the t-shirts we'll take the t-shirt picture and also we're hoping to have a speaker come and you know kind of kick off the the the year with a hopefully an inspirational speaker and someone that can keep people's attention that kind of thing so it's not going to be all day um it should be just breakfast and maybe two or three hours after breakfast okay and then school starts on august 4th it's weird that we're planning for that already we're doing a beginning of the year schedule and all kinds of training taking place and things like that any questions for me always clean cleanup at hill at heritage going um it's going um i think anywhere from one foot to three feet of drywall off the wall when i talked to julie today they had the fans still trying to dry things out there was for those that don't know we a supply line to a a water heater broke over the weekend and they had water in every the entire front office all the way to the gym at heritage except for the principal's office and the assistant office those are those are dry but they have to basically the the water shot a hole through the wall because it would just basically ran out you know was squirting on the wall all weekend uh we don't know what exactly happened because we've not discovered it on a monday morning and uh so shot a hole in the wall uh like i said anywhere from one to three feet of water a saturated dry wall um they had to do asbestos testing and in order to start work they started to work things still need to dry out and they have to repatch and so it's it's very very a bad situation covered by insurance we have a thousand dollar deductible that we'll pay but it will be covered by insurance and it's unfortunate we're managing they're managing mr livingston feast yes so there's a three things i'd like to just touch on briefly with this uh so look at the first page you see the conferences there making our maintenance and operations energy project account and you see those conferences are 5.5 million we know that those are pretty high those are obligations that you signed up for either with a purchase order purchase or goods and services or with a salary we know those are higher than they need to be we have been closing those if we we know that in reality they're closer to about 4.7 4.8 lane but we're not going to close them in april until we're sure everything is paid for and received but if we drop them from 5.5 million to 5.3 million and then you follow it over to their percent balance and you see that negative 0.99 that climbs up to a positive 0.37 so it kind of comes down to the way you want data and i don't want to ever make data say things that aren't obvious so the obvious fact is right now if you just look at all our encumbrances in that fund there are 5.5 million at the end of march so that's where they were i know they're four to five hundred thousand high uh mr shows mentioned that we had that education stabilization grant and that replaced a lot of mno salaries so to speak and that brought our ml cash brought our expenses about 620 000 from march of 2020 to march of 2021 less than 2021 so that really helped but the incumbencies if it's encumbred we're just not going to start closing those down so if you're really rebecca i've met with her three or four times and she gave uh gave us her keys last thursday and said you know call me if you need me but please don't call me so i'm just going through this you know i would rather let you know that the negative point nine nine percent there is is what the numbers show but they're over inflated for encompassing so we do have a better cash situation than that any questions on that first date and then hopefully hopefully karen did they have this page in front of him just revised yes yes and i made an error on there for sure and it's a number one we talked about the error with just one digit well this was actually the number one if you look on the one i gave you in the book it's in fund 515 and this is just a cash one 515 the one i gave you the first i just put an extra one in you see that expenditure million five fifteen that's the one i gave you that's our civic center fund oops sorry have an extra one in there if you look at the one karen gave you today the expenditures were fifteen million or fifteen thousand eight seventy five not one million one one five hundred fifty thousand so i take the one out all of a sudden then the cash goes to seven oh seven thousand and sorry i just instead of five seventy nine negative it's 707 positive which is the real deal for the underwater and again i apologize for that it did get formatting these so you can read them a little bit easier these these numbers on this youtube those are tax funds that are limited by cash the other funds we talked about in our big operating budget are really budget funds cash tends to drag on those and we just need to make sure you're in that all the cash is received before we pull this leader any questions on the cash fund balances then the revised one is the one that you just received today and i apologize for not catching that number one in there questions good questions oh we had all the questions okay then we have just a couple more sheets to look at here the cash cash flow analysis uh that's the third part here the two page and it goes up to mark and just so you see how this works i want to just give you a couple numbers you look at the top of july the 2 million 909 000 that's all funds all passed july 1st last up 2.9 that's this page this page right here is the double and it's the cash flow analysis so last july when we open the doors 10 million 909 thousand five twenty one dollars and three cents to start with all flex cash then we bring in the revenues we subtract the expenditures and we see the difference then goes to the top of the next call to start august 1 million 441.

they are open a little bit more than we are um i just looked it up and cerritas is 180 a week and there's a new one in rancho cerita called um bye wrote us down the name of the place he's lutheran preschool i think it is and it's 2 30 a week so um so i really think that it's overdue that we raise our tuition um we're talking about a two dollar a week i mean a day raise which would be from one from 150 to 160 part time would go from 25 dollars a day to 27 a day after care from 50 to 60 and we are going to be having early dismissal days every wednesday so there would be more care involved with that um that's basically what we're recommending i did figure it out that for our staff our staff we currently give a 30 discount to our staff which is a really healthy discount this would only be a seven dollar uh raise seven dollar increase for them per week which is not too terribly bad um i just feel like we we i'm just worried that we're not going to be able to continue to be financially solvent with the amount of tuition that we're collecting um you can go ahead and go to the next one so that's all i have the hours are well right now they're 7 to 3.

then individual teacher performance pay will be determined by the teachers evaluation performance classification of effective or highly effective on their evaluation rubric and pursuant to those particular subsections paragraphs so then this was like written into the plan probably three years ago for the state that 33 of this 40 of part b has to come from this right there from our actual evaluation and the rubric that follows that then for part c which tends to be more of the in question of our plan is that we have one category we have category one committees and we have category two committees and then we have a category three which is in the involvement of after school activities with regular meeting attendance active participation and committee activities required and then a reduction in pay if you do not fulfill these so in category one it's all about academic leadership for students to achieve we have at least one meeting per month per committee so we have the 301 which is ongoing all the time overseeing and then we have up to this year we have six members on it we have our child support team then we try to have two teachers from that particular area pk through three and then teachers from grades one through eight and then we have the curriculum committee with this year working very very diligently in a new map curriculum then and again we try to get a variance of all the different overview with teachers giving their input then the next committee is the emergency committee and through the years that has really driven on how we look what we do from fire drills to um if we would have to evacuate the school all of that stuff so it's done really well so then we go from that into the one of the last committee's instructional technology committee and they basically um work with albert on assisting him for all of the different things that are out there programs ideas and so forth and they also show us in professional development some of this so then we have pbis and so pbis is our whole look of trying to have students be safe kind of responsible and how that program looks and we have about four members then lastly we have the administration advisory committee that meet with our administration and they are a sounding board as well as working with ideas for the whole flow of the school and again we try to have a teacher representation throughout the school on that committee so then in category two um it is our employee welfare and morale for student achievement because it all needs to be one combined trying to be for student achievement and success so we have the audio visual committee and it explains there what they do with the setups takedowns and everything else that they need to do then next we have the um the foundation board and us working with the teachers who are on it working with the continental foundation and making that a success for our school then we have the ptc uh liaisons that work with ptc on the different things from whether it's the holiday store or it's the teacher appreciation whatever it is that they're working on we're there to assist them we have our red ribbon week which is an anti-drug campaign that we do with else and our love of reading we have the sunshine committee which is again reaches out if there is a death in one of the staff members family whether there is a wedding a birth whatever it is surgery there there the sunshine committee then the volunteer recognition committee which in the past has been like our volunteer brunch has a different look this year but we want to recognize all those great volunteers that help our school so then each one each person who is in 301 is also with the family activity night which looks different this year we've had to go digital with it but have had some great nights presented so we've had the art night the literacy night i think math night was recent and science night i noticed then lastly will be the career day which will again look different but it's been really a neat way to be able to reach out to the families though we can't bring them on the campus we still are reaching out to have that rapport with our families so then it tells you requirements about meetings and um again meetings again via email as opposed to in person and that's just for the family activity night and so all of that is laid out so that nobody asks questions everybody understands what they're committed to then we need the next one um we do have guidelines for teachers being respectful of one another as far as being on time and the meetings how they are going to be run and how if you're sick or not able to attend a meeting than how you make it up and it's way more than just attending meetings it's a lot of time involved before and after in all of these activities we do and all these people can attest to the time that they have put in so then we also have it laid out um that you can do an alternate duty if you miss something and then next one monica and then um when things need to be turned in so we also have guidelines that like this activity night is a one-time shot so we need everybody's attendance and participation because when we were live on campus we were anywhere from 50 to 75 people coming to it so it needed the whole committee effort again we talk about if you miss things and what you would be penalized for not participating as a committee member and then um then we go into um the after school things so keep going monica so we have the sports supervision but it didn't look like that this year and so that we track need supervision again did it happen this year but it really bonds us those of us yeah it does when we're out there and if kinder and first grade teachers are seeing their sixth seventh and eighth grade teachers participating it's it's a real it's exciting and it's a lot of fun okay and just to clarify those track meets like the t the teachers are all working the track meet we're not there just supervising we're lane timers we're the long jump it we are raking the pit and that's usually two track meets in the spring and we're usually here until about six o'clock easily after but we we are known for having some of the best run track meets in southern arizona i mean the schools that come to our district parents are impressed parents from other schools are very impressed and it's they're a lot of work yeah and so then also we assist ptc because sadly to say they don't give the parent involvement that they used to so we're a big shot and they are for the teacher part of ptc and then normally we have our evening fall winter spring performances and we all pitch in and supervise and help and do whatever we need to do that mr ferguson mr merzin would have job duties for everybody so then again it talks about if you have missed and doing alternate duties if they are available and then how to get all of this into we have a very sophisticated spreadsheet that it all goes into individual one for each teacher because the auditors definitely want to make sure that the school is that the teachers are doing what they committed to do and mrs collay has perfected that in a really nice individual sheet for first semester second semester then we talk about not being able to fulfill things and then go on it is optional we do vote at the end of school of the school year for the next year's plan you have to get 70 of the votes of teachers uh to be in that and then we also have that part-time teachers can participate and theirs is on a ratio of their employment contract and so then we talk about when it is distributed at winter break and the last hate period in june so then we have some things for the teachers to remember um and big tips about if you're at the game and signing in and that um let's see that minutes when they are due so that we can make sure we have everything tallied to tell the business office yes this person has met their uh commitment of 301 for first semester second semester and the due dates so to speak and then we talk about the pay because the plan the state said we have to specifically have some type of thing that the teachers can see how they're paid of 301 whether they get 100 percent of the part c is what we're talking about right now depending on their work assistance meetings and follow through of every day and then so same thing are we there monica yeah okay then i also gave kind of just a brief history letter from me to the board um since i'm the only staff member that started with 301 um i did try to explain that as we started what continental would look like for 301 that we had teachers super attendant and two board members that devised uh what we were going to do we looked with some advice from aea watch other districts after the first year second year of where we should be headed what was a good thing to do in the 301 plan not to do an israel one plan but i feel like it's in the years that i've been in it and helped organize it that it truly assists teachers to be compensated for their hard work for more pay and it's been a hiring lure for our district to say our 301 teachers have earned this um we're always in the bottom half and i would even probably say probably the bottom quarter or third of pay in the state as a school district so 301 it's not anything that somebody has not worked really hard to be part of to gain 100 of the money and the voters intended when they passed it in 2000 that teachers were to get 100 percent of the money the state put parameters through the years we have had especially for part c tried some different things suggestions from the state and then we fine-tuned it to where we're at when 301 started i think wendy and jenny and myself can attest that we did all this stuff with no pay so when 301 came it was let's make it fit that we are compensated for all these additional duties that we do and it's not that we're complaining about the duties because i think it's what makes continental a great school all of these different things we do but that we receive compensation so any questions and it could look a lot different next year in parts or the year after we're not sure where they're headed with it but um truly it's not it's not 301 where teachers just go to meetings so all of you can attest it's a lot of work with whatever committee you're on okay well and two i think the well done [Applause] when you look at arizona as a state where it ranks nationwide it is it is difficult to find teachers in the state of arizona every year schools are deficient in being able to fill teaching positions so this 301 was passed with the idea of trying to make us more attractive to people to attract teachers to the teaching profession because nationwide we are again at the bottom what um [Music] i checked with two districts because i have a husband that's in one district up the road and i have a brother-in-law that's in a district down the road um the districts do have the choice to use that towards teachers you know um you know filling positions with some of that money but they really try to give schools are committed to giving 100 of that money to the teachers um i will say this compared to the two other districts that i can compare to continental teachers work in incredibly a great deal more for that 301 money than what i see my husband having it dude for his 301 i came from one of those districts and i can definitely attest to that it's a lot of work um what you saw on the slide shows was when we meet and how many times we meet either a month or semester but what you don't see on that is how many things we have to do outside of that and how much we have to do i'm in the child support committee so we only meet once a month however i'm meeting four times a week with kids in preschool through third grade to check on how they're doing academically socially emotionally and then ms wilcox and i are pulling about 30 kids in the next month or so to go over testing strategies things like that and that's all on our own time so our lunch our planning time things like that so it's not just the meetings that we're attending it's a lot of work [Music] so we got it like we do here however for our through one money we did get all of it but all we had to do was attend one meeting every two months and it was almost like a like a training class so you'd go we'd read a book it's usually a book study and then that was it yeah and it fairs yes exactly because tusd at one point was putting some into the medical right um different sites had different goals when we had the seven of them from salvation district one their goals was as teachers who turned lights off in rooms yeah curb electricity it just has been some have um things about your certification and being tusd at one time paid an additional 301 to those teachers who are nationally um i do know somebody the school district puts more towards the base so they don't get that christmas payment that we all love very much um they just get the they just get the uh they'll get a lump sum in the summer which is comparable to what we get so more is added to their face and each district it depends like i can find kyreen really they can find some districts 301 plans on their website and it's very accessible and through the years i would scan them and look at them and bring them back to the committee well they're doing this and so and so they're doing this and what do you think about this and then we had feedback from our auditors too as well on documentation what could be in the plan or not in the plan so um it just varies the and obviously won't be the three what i call buckets you know that a b and c next year of how they're doing but they've not given any clear guidance of how that base pay and performance pay and then being careful with um with the monies and stuff and not i don't know i'm i'm curious to see what guidelines the state finally comes up with it's very unclear for the future is there somebody who's doing it better than we are i don't think anybody's doing better what we do what i see is i see many so what we're doing is in the best interest of the teachers and the students in the school because i feel like all of those category one committees on part c and the category two and then and the three right they really well-rounded our school and our kids and really pushing for academics and stuff so yeah i haven't been truly i think we are the most hardworking and when we tell other teachers about it they always look at us like ours yeah they're doing all that you know so but i really think it drives continental so what can we do better in which way the distribution of the funds the awarding of the teachers the ensuring that we can attract the top talent within so my biggest concern is that i see it looks like in that senate bill that's the only thing i can see is where they marked us in senate bill and others tell us it's passed and so forth i can't see the completed bill yet but what worries me is that it does allow for other programs to come out of 301 like summer program but our district already has the money for that so my concern is in leaving and retiring is that these that stay that they are compensated well for what they do and real one is part of that that you know there have been years that we many of us that have been here have been frozen for several years seven years and you know at least we had our little pie in the sky that we worked hard for with the 301 and that continued and stuff so i really hate to see anything started at continental that would take from the 301 that was it because it was to compensate teachers because arizona has not done a good job of doing that have you used the request to speak to address the bill yeah has anyone so just to clarify right now our part c is considered the compensation increases on the bill that's what they're saying which is what the bill is saying will be no longer right they're saying that the funds will be in the base paid and performance what percentage do we happen to see it does talk about teacher compensation and that's again where i'm confused when i went through the senate bill there is something and that's why i'm like so what's it gonna look like because i'm seeing a lot on the base and performance but then somewhere else i read on the senate bill 11 39 about other teacher compensation i think where they talk about the summer programs and tutoring programs and stuff like that so it is still compensation it increases for summer school or for nationally board certification or for hard to fill positions or whatever right it's not the compensation like like we've been doing so again as i mentioned to you as a committee when our superintendent county soups met you know we don't understand why this was even on the table the superintendents didn't know it was coming and you know most of the superintendents are like what we're doing is working because we've had committees of teachers and board members already come to an agreement so those were going to be our questions in terms of you know what can we do to get our opinion out there yeah it's like they've written something but there's no directions yet on how to use it how or really when right and that's so we need to have a plan that aligns to this or is it something like with the state standard that they can they give you a couple years to put something into place and follow and be able to teach those standards so right now if it's just kind of up there we kind of have an idea from this senate bill but beyond that we don't have clear instructions we just know they're eliminating the three pops that's why it's important over here questions from you folks suggestions thoughts i don't have a question but i have more of a statement this is my first year so i didn't do all the track meets and all of that so the school i came from we didn't have to do all of that either it was we had to give benchmarks and however they scored that's what it was but i took a paid cut to come up here which was odd for me because i'm coming i came from border towns like my kids you know it just to come up here to the more affluent area i was very surprised um this would be my 12th year teaching at my master's like i found everything that i'm supposed to have but to hear that we our funds are trying to be taken away like that or we're separating them like well let's use it to pay for this that is what fathers at least meet because i know i suppose and i literally came to the school because i was told it was the best i couldn't i don't know anyone here i didn't know anyone here i literally was told it's a great school they have sports i have three kids um and they always have the community involved it's on the circus but it's in carnival i haven't seen it but i purely applied at the school just based off of the suggestions of the community and so it it's known that continental is a really good school and that we have all of these extra things it's just this year was a little different which was out of our hands we couldn't do anything so we all tried i'm on all the committees and everything you know we were meeting late we were staying again i have three kids i have one sitting in the car right now i have two at home and they had to sit out and wait while we stay after school or we come ready for meetings so it's just slightly disheartening to hear that we want to pull some of your funds to pay for something else and even though we're the ones out there working hard for it after school before school we're here with kids that's why we're all teachers we're here for kids that's why we do what we do that's what i want to say it's a good hiring a good hiring because the 301 over you know counteracted my decrease in what i was getting into my contract so that is part of the reason why i was like oh that's even more so because i don't know so you understand that some of the people on your border are fighting for you in the senate right yes but i just want to make sure that we're getting it we don't want any of it to be full to start paying for other funds for other things right it's a senate bill though and that's why i would encourage all of you to get involved and do the request to speak and you know i know you probably can't leave school but maybe during your planning period or your lunch hour you can get on and you can get a request to speak or you can give a thumbs up or a thumbs down and they they are paying attention to that and i think at the last board meeting i mentioned you know we we need to stay on top of this stuff uh we don't know as a school i don't think we as a board i don't believe that we have a lobbyist that's working but we are watching those bills and i think you know i'm watching them and i we are concerned as well because we want to keep the top talent that is here and we want to attract top talent to work with you do we know the impetus for timeness what what what the rationale is for this change does anybody know really though yeah yeah i know yeah our first question is what's miracle in january that they were talking about doing this and then it has just kind of kept going which i didn't expect it to with the copied and everything like how can you act one more layer to a school district right now during these times and yeah it is and from what you said right right it is now passed yes it's the status of this bill is signed and is assigned to chapter 67.

you can see the four policies that we have here incurring debt 440. each of these relate to different topics on the agenda instructional materials connection with community and parental involvement any questions on any of those policies if not i'm going to move ahead to item b which is our human ex parent student data we have svetlana popovic here and svetlana is going to present to you the data there'll be some data on the screen here and there is some in your packet as well what's in your packet won't match directly what's on the screen so svetlana i'll turn it over to you thank you good evening board uh sorry to hear that you're leaving tiffany thank you so much it's been a pleasure to work with you so hello board tonight i'm going to be presenting student engagement data and parent and family data from the human ex culture climate surveys when we start with this it's a reminder that this is for grades three through eight so all students a big hollow third grade through eighth grade completed the 64 question culture and climate survey 13 dimensions is what it's filtered into and five of those include maslow's hierarchy of needs in the question in each one of the dimensions students were asked in regard to themselves i statements teacher perception and perception of their principle these are all this is perception data these 13 dimensions self-esteem is the number one dimension this year so the current mean is 3.8 3.99 and so the 13 dimensions really center around if these 13 dimensions are high functioning it creates a learning environment that is conducive for students to learn in and that's why the maslow's hierarchy of needs the five are included in those dimensions so this is directly voices from third through eighth graders at the top of the screen you see that we had a participating class of 973 students that participated in this survey this year any dimension this is a mean out of 5.0 any dimension over a 4.0 last year we achieved a 4.0 in the self-esteem anything at that 4.0 threshold is in that good to great category that humanx designates so as we're looking at all the dimensions the first five are definitely areas for celebration students are feeling self-esteem classroom management feedback the feedback that they're given on their assignments from their teachers fairness of grading and curriculum and belonging a sense of belonging to the school community are all within the top five dimensions when looking at the lower dimensions we have safety survival needs survival needs meaning sleep and water essential needs satisfaction relevance in learning and choice and so we see that the same student choice is at the bottom as it was last year many of these have shifted and in consideration that this was a year that the students really faced a challenge of remote learning environments and then blended learning environments this is data that really is uh something for us to actually celebrate because we are holding steady last year we were at 30 of the 973 students that took the survey this year 29 percent are saying they are satisfied and highly engaged highly satisfied highly engaged last year we had 30 so considering the times that we're in and considering the sample size of the grouping we had more students complete the survey this year than we did last year and that's what we're hoping to have year over year is more participation so that the data has and holds its own integrity in 2019 that dream box meaning that upper corner was at 52.37 percent and this year we're at 51.76 percent what we're always wanting to do is uh make sure that we're changing the that environment with those 13 dimensions by moving the numbers and students perceptions from the lower left meaning low satisfaction low engagement all up into the right upper right corner and we have achieved that this year in 2019 that lower quadrant was at 22 22.87 percent this year we have 20 20.92 percent so again considering that we have a larger sample size and considering the drastic change in the learning environment this year this is actually cause for celebration to say that our students are not feeling we're not seeing the data a drastic difference in what their perception is of the learning environment when we take a look at the top questions i am going to have to move a little closer when we look at the top questions the number one question rated out of all the question items is my teacher wants me to be a successful person and you see how many of the first two questions have to do with self-esteem also a high regard for my teacher treats me with respect and so these two questions all of the questions that you see here ins are all teacher focused and this is a celebration of the teachers because the other option remember that the students had three question phrases i statements teacher statements and perceptions of the principle the fact that all five of these questions are in regard and give the students perception of their teachers is really again something really to celebrate in our teachers but also that the relationships here that we know between teacher and student um is very strong and so uh all of these top questions are a great indicator and they are all above that 4.0 threshold and you see not much of a difference in the means from the previous to the current when we look at the lowest uh questions the la the lowest five questions um consistent again with last year the two lowest questions have to do with choice of learning in class i get to choose the activities i work on my teacher asks me to help create classroom rules and expectations and i get to make decisions about how i learn in the classroom all three of those belonging to choice as well as survival needs i have a lot of energy at the start of the day so taking this into account into the context of remote learning that we had this year the reason why we're seeing and you'll see this more in the parent data but a lot of these things weren't things that were really in the students control this year as well as many things that weren't in all of our control this year but we're seeing this that it is still consistent so i'm not really sure that we can really put this all off on kovid a a year of remote learning in covid because last year these same questions were the lowest questions that we had as well so it's something for us to notice in the trend data and i know something that each one of the teacher leadership teams are well aware of and the teachers have been talking about and also actively trying to think about ways that we can improve choice in the classroom for our students for accessibility to learning when we look at the student participation so from the elementary school to the middle school the overall district profile we had 249 students last year to 290 at 273 this year participate the dream boxes for the elementary the middle school and the district as a whole and remember that the elementary is really representative of only third grade since it was just third grade through eighth grade that took it so all grades are considered in the middle school sixth through seventh i mean sixth seventh and eighth grade now moving into the parent data the parent data we came we have 451 parents that participated in the survey this year thank you parents i understand that the five essentials is taxing as well as yet another survey this one this survey really is we did increase almost doubled our parent participation this year so something i really do invite all parents to continue to participate in it this data is very specific a lot more thorough than the five essentials and here are the dimensions that the parents perception is wrapped around perceptions of the superintendent how well he's doing the school environment again in relationship to the learning that their students are experiencing safety school district teacher mission principal and student learning and so all of these for from last year were in the 4.0 we only have one dimension this year that's not in the 4.0 so from 451 parents that completed it these are excellent results and a great message back to you as a school and a superintendent's cabinet teachers administrators as well as to the school board that your parent community is in support of the superintendent the school environment and believes in the safety and the school district as well as the teacher so all of these results are very uh very good results when we break it down we see that of the 451 parents participated 48 percent 48 call it 49 percent are have high school pride and high sense of service to quality of educational environment so that service to quality of educational environment is their comment uh toward the learning environment something that i want to um point out and actually celebrate the dynamic this year with students learning at home is that the parents were also very present in the students learning and when i dissected the data with the principals in the in their buildings a lot of what we saw was that the parents had increased uh perceptions positive perceptions of their students learning because they were some some of them for the very first time watching the learning happening over the ipad directly in their home and in their living room and so when you talk about the double uh 451 parents participating and that we are at this almost within that same 49 percent ballpark it really is something to celebrate to say that our parents are seeing how their t how their teachers are responding to their uh child's learning in the classroom and so forty eight point seven eight percent really service of high quality of education and school pride again we're always wanting to shift from the lower left to the upper right so uh last year that shouldn't be it should be august 2020 we had 8.97 in the lower left and 14.64 this year in the upper if you take the upper quadrant we are sitting at 66.30 percent of parents with high pride and high quality of education in their in their classroom for their students these same five questions were in the top of their were the same top five questions last year in 2019 and so you can see here the parents perceptions all of these are in that four point above that 4.0 it's solid 4.5 and above i feel comfortable approaching my child's teacher with questions teachers treat me with respect teachers treat my child with respect my child feels welcome in school and when i enter my child's school the front office staff is helpful so really it's so poignant tonight that we celebrated the front office staff because kudos to them parents really appreciate that and and they really do an amazing job so these are the top five questions and they are the same ones last year but the data has more integrity because it is more informed this year here are the bottom five questions and so the lowest question from this year's survey is really my teacher my child's teacher reaches out to me regularly with feedback about how my child is doing in school and my child feels comfortable going to his or her principal with questions well that one in particular going to the principal for some students for many students wasn't even an option this year but the fact that they even rated that as a 3.79 is fantastic even the low question my child teacher reaches out to me regularly i know for a fact working with the buildings and with the teacher leadership teams that this question really we need to dig into a little bit more that it doesn't necessarily mean that the child's teacher hasn't reached out regularly rather that that communication looked differently it was more in the moment um many zoomed parents were like hi mrs papavik over the zoom when the children were learning so the communication this year because of the remote learning looked very different but again teacher leadership teams are looking into this and digging into different ways that they can make sure and ensure that they are giving parents feedback and then two questions that i did circle is my child is meeting his or her learning goals that isn't a significant drop from last year last year we were at 3.99 this year we're at a 3.8 and the top the other question that's in the green is the expectations in different teachers classrooms are consistent throughout the day again these are informed i would say majority of middle school parents because there's just the one courthood or third grader so it's third through eighth graders that inform this survey so here we take a look at primary parent survey i'm sorry yeah this is the parent sermon so primary elementary middle school and the whole district as a whole you can see how we doubled the participation in each one of the buildings and then you look at the dream box how it's increased from 2019 to 2021 in the elementary school and then we're still holding within that ballpark with double in for information with the other three with the other two buildings middle school and primary any any questions that i can scroll back to any clarifications that you'd like to see on either one of the student or the parent that looks good i appreciate your work thank you work with our appreciate your work with our building leadership teams and our principals so uh the data doesn't go on a shelf we're just trying to yeah it's good well thank you very much thank you so much thank you appreciate it okay the next item i'm going to call up dr hedgevitch dr king pittman we're going to probably pair these next three actually gonna maybe be kind of converged together is that right yeah okay so we inundated you with many memos is this good matt okay um and we don't want to take up your whole night reading them to you so we just kind of wanted to frame everything that's in the memos under one larger theme i guess you would say which is what we can do now that we've been through this pandemic now for a year what do we plan on doing and what do we know is important for our students moving forward to not only try and help you know bring them up to speed if necessary but really set up structures within our schools in various ways to just move forward in a healthy way so when you take a look at the best educational practices in the aftermath of a crisis memo it kind of outlines just a few things that are they seem minimal but they're actually um if they're done correctly we can i think really really mitigate some of the effects of this pandemic for our students and families so one of the things listed in the memo is just that again we're going to prepare for next year like we normally would but we're also going to be making sure that we're preparing for this social emotional impact and so all of this data that's taken and put in this memo is really it's come from data that's been gathered during other crises like the west african ebola crisis or hurricane katrina when students are removed out of the learning environment for extended periods of time so these are the points that some of the research would outline that researchers who looked at those situations gathered and put together into many different websites that are actually offered for you on the bottom of the memo so speaking of social emotional impact this ties to some of the work that we'll be doing district wide we're going to continue many of the practices that we started but it's also um going to help us as we reframe our kindergarten classroom experience so that can be you can peruse that in the kindergarten memo but we'll be um shifting our instructional model with kindergarten to more of a purposeful play model which lends itself to more social emotional communities for our students which we know is something that they're going to need in that memo it also outlines the transition between pre-kindergarten and kindergarten and how important that transition is but now we know not every student went to pre-k not every student had had a daycare experience like they normally would have so we're preparing extra for that impact on those youngest students the second idea there that we're sharing with you is that we would want to of course encourage students to enroll in summer learning opportunities and dr pittman and mrs denovo have worked extensively to put together some wonderful classes that dr pittman wanted to talk to you about so i definitely couldn't do this without kira dinovo she's the administrator for our summer school and she has really put together a really nice package we continue to have our esy for our students who receive services our ell academy transition for kindergarten transition for fifth grade but then we also have some community outreach so we have some steam classes robotic class offered and then academically most importantly we will have reading and math offered for every grade level it'll be no cost to parents trans transportation will be provided camp duncan and a child's place have worked out kind of a deal with us for child care for parents and then ultimately in past we would cap classes what we are going to do is after registration is open you know if the class caps at 15 we'll cap it at 15 but then we are going to continue to offer then another section even if that means that we start posting for positions outside of the district thank you um number three just discusses how there's more of this multi-tiered systems of support work that dr king has been really engaging in with all of the buildings we're looking at our test data of course but we're really needing to take a look at it in terms of it's a diagnostic measure of a student's knowledge and abilities but how can we make sure we really use that to differentiate instruction because as we said all the students coming into school next year will have had very different past educational experiences so that data really needs to be used in a diagnostic manner and we'll be leading our staff through that we have had a couple parents reach out with regards to feeling you know worried about their child's academic skill and ability right now based on being in this pandemic for a year and some of them did ask us you know how are we going to move forward can we can we hold my child back and so we started digging into the data regarding that too and so we just wanted to make a statement as a district that really grade retention no matter what the situation is not helpful and actually can be hurtful to students and harm long term so we're as a district going to make sure that we're putting students into classes based on chronological age and are again that ties to the differentiation piece our teachers are very passionate and very good at differentiating and we will continue to work with them to make sure that that happens and last but not least focusing on teaching the grade level standards so again how much time are we going to spend on quote unquote lost learning or missed learning opportunities and the answer is um both we're going to be doing sort of a skill recovery approach because that's what was proven to be effective for hurricane katrina and we'll obviously going we're going to be making sure we give them exposure to the grade level standards so almost a spiral spiraling effect where we're going to keep moving forward just as we normally would and constantly try and circle back and re-teach as needed for any missing skills so we are confident that those practices that when put in place are going to be helpful but like i said the the kindergarten memo and the handwriting memo are to be seen under the guise of that memo in general again the kindergarten teachers will be provided some training we'll be moving into a different instructional model to help support our youngest learners and then with handwriting this is one other thing just to consider and i'm sure parents would have already thought about this but i just wanted to speak a little bit to the handwriting memo and that really has to do with again these opportunities that students normally would have had in a regular school year of writing using paper and pencil and and not necessarily typing that's a great way to get across your knowledge but um really this act of putting your pencil to the paper and especially for our youngest learners making sure that they have opportunities to build up those fine motor skills so as a district we've always supported the grade level standards with handwriting and illinois does dictate that we teach handwriting in our schools but up until now we haven't systematized it as much so we'd really like your support in providing our teachers the materials that are necessary to get that k pre-k through fourth or fifth grade alignment and we will continue to make sure we provide those supports for our teachers as they receive a new resource some of them are already familiar with it and some of them may not be so we'll make sure that everyone gets the proper training to make sure they're implementing that handwriting without tears is the name of the program and we will be doing that like i said pre-kindergarten through fourth grade so those are just some of the the topics that have been rattling around in the district office and again we just wanted to say thank you for your support and i'm willing to take any questions if anybody has them i know there was a lot of words on those papers i've asked if maybe i could join the handwriting for tears class right me too my handwriting is gone cursive bob you can spend some time in third grade cursive next year oh i had it i just had one question sure i um we got this in the curriculum committee meeting and it took me a while to digest it but um my question was with the kids assessment so it says it has to take place within the first 40 days of school yes and then it says we're going to do it three times a year so it means we're going to be assessing kids 120 days out of 175 days a year you know what that's i'm so glad that you asked this question so the answer is yes but the reason that sounds so insane is because the purposeful play model and the way that the kids assessment is created is the idea it supports this idea that teachers are constantly assessing students and so if i were to walk around the room and you were in my classroom i'd be making simple observations and anecdotal notes about all of your abilities and the idea is to collect this information over time because as kindergartners we know just walking into the classroom as a brand new kindergartner we're going to have students on all ends of the spectrum so really the idea is to gain information about individuals over time it's not this this assessment is not a one-to-one sit-down skill and drill assessment where a teacher is going to be engaged in giving prompts and pro and expecting answers from students it's more of a natural observing students in their natural setting so if for example a child's in the dramatic play area and they're you know doing some dramatic play with a peer the teacher might lend their ear to hearing what the students are saying to each other watching observations of their interactions uh social emotional abilities and then turning to that section if you will of the kids assessment and doing a quick check mark so it's as instructions happening it's not like an nwea assessment where we would have a child sit on a computer and spend 40 days testing and then 40 more days testing and then 40 more days testing it's just in a natural environment if that makes any sense so is this like three times the paperwork for the teachers or like i'm sorry so it seems like what is on the kids assessment is also what's on the report card and what's also what's on these other so are we doing this are we doing the same report three different ways or that's a great question so we would need to and this is one of the district's uh goals too is to kind of refine our report cards the idea being though that the items that are on the kids assessment yes they're reflected on the report card but the teachers could use the kids assessment data just again to go in quick and do the reporting side for the report card it won't require yet another set of observations or anecdotal note gathering or even artifact gathering it would just require the teachers to take the information they've observed all year long or all quarter or semester long and just plug that into the report card do you want to talk about the kids assessment the current requirements from the state on the kids receptor and actually i might reference dr king over here she's dr king's been working extensively with the kids assessment and all of the problem solving or excuse me students support team we just changed the name of our teams um meetings and so we're we've been going through the kids data but there's a lot to it and i'll let you kind of take over so currently the state requires that we complete 17 components every single year and so it's something that teachers have to do in addition to everything else we give them the what we're proposing is instead of adding all these others so the map test for can specifically just for kindergarten instead of having them do an assessment that's not developmentally appropriate appropriate for kindergarten removing map and map reading fluency from the kindergarten tests students and then having them just do the kids assessment which it's not to your point and i'm so glad you read and asked these questions because it's not a sit and get whereas map and all these other conventional ways we've assessed kids for so long specifically it will in all of our grades but unfortunately we were on the phone earlier just talking to someone who understands emergent learners better than i do just saying that that's developmentally inappropriate so they're sitting at a computer taking a paper or take a paper-based test isn't that makes what makes most sense and so instead if you want to see if kids can share asking them to fill out a document about can i share that doesn't make any sense can i watch you share when you're on the playground or can i watch you share resources or transfer resources one person to another those are a it's going to tackle the sel bit that is really critical for our our young students but it also it's going to tag in something that the state already requires so we're checking off a couple of boxes because this is something that already had to be done anyway we're certainly adding it in so we're doing it two more times because we want to ensure that we're making even though they say all kindergartners are kindergartners we want to ensure that our kids are making adequate progress to the degree that i can understand that kindergartners make that's still something i'm trying to wrap my head around from just an academic side but there are ways to see are our students learning these concepts that we're teaching when we're in these purposeful play environments and transferring them on a regular daily basis that we wouldn't be able to get if we were just sitting at in front of a computer for 20 to 40 minutes three times a year taking the map test so it will happen more often but it's an assessment we already do and now we'll be making use of that data in a much more important and impactful way as it relates to the curriculum that teachers are teaching okay thank you question thank you yeah i i really was yeah anything else tiffany i interrupted you do you have a question no i was gonna mention the same thing so i don't know maybe for the other board members talk a little bit more of like what the purple purposeful play kind of means because we were in a curriculum meeting but i think would be beneficial for others to kind of where the schedule is not so you know rigid and everything so it would be good for them to hear kind of what that looks like before i give it to can i just wait i do want to clarify because i don't want it to make look i was ever misleading anyone it will feel different for all of our teachers the doing the kids more often so i don't want it to sound like i don't understand the work that will be associated with that but we have training and coaching that we'll be doing for our paraprofessionals for other coach people to come in we're going to help do that to help with the lift in the beginning because i don't want to say the work they're not doing is they have a lot on their plate and we want to we were acknowledging that as an administration i'm acknowledging that in my role i understand that but we're very equipped and prepared to to help with that lift because it will feel like different work and they may wish they had the map test back for a little while but i think the information they'll get later will be really important and helpful for them and you just say the training they'll have multiple training too yes yes or something right yeah and it's and it started and it's gonna keep going and we'll have like human power to help with that like we will they'll they will not not have support perfect so they have like there's three training dates like april and will there be additional training offered come say august yeah summer goes by and yes so we we're lucky to have those institute days at the beginning of the school year next year and i think we'll be fully fully using that time if we can you know get teachers to come in and and over the summer we'll provide it then we'll do it whenever they are able to do it but for sure um it's already begun we started last friday there'll be more training pretty much every friday until school is out and then if we can get teachers in in june and july we will but otherwise august will be the last um third of the training is the plan okay just for me what is the difference from major and minor the so are you referencing the data section um so the major and the minor referral data that's included really um the best way for me to describe it is um there's a matrix that each building has and so when a teacher observe observes a behavior they look at the matrix and they determine is a major or minor minor typically means this is just something that i want to take note of as a teacher if we start to see some patterns these are the data that i want to make sure that i reference in terms of helping a student work through something but the major referral data is really that really generally means that the child was referred to the principal or to the office for some sort of consequence so miners are sort of observational where it's keep an eye on it majors office referral yeah and then you want to know more about purposeful play or do you know just to kind of let the other board members sure it's more about the program i think it's pretty neat well and it's funny because the trainer that we're working with um she made a joke of course because she's in full support of a purposeful play model but she's like are you gonna use purposeful play because sometimes that word makes people a little bit leery and so we are we're going to use the word purposeful play and what that generally just means in an early childhood classroom is that teachers and our teachers are phenomenal i will say they have all of their standards in their head of what they need to cover in kindergarten for example our pre-k teachers also do this and so um they're observing there's um there's circle time at the beginning where a teacher might do a mini lesson and then students are able to make choices for choice time and so a lot of that just to be honest it's a dramatic play area it's a mathematics center with blocks or other building materials there's usually a writing center there's usually a center that where the child will work with the teacher um you know art there's there's all different ways to do it um but the the idea is that we'll be taking more of an approach of teaching the literacy and the math concepts multiple times throughout the day but through a social studies or science lens so one of the units for example is called seeds and so everything that they do during that unit is going to be through the lens of science and seeds and growing and you know there's mathematical concepts that can be visited through that type of a theme all of the centers will take the take the theme of seeds for that particular unit or you know some sort of flowers plants it's very uh inquiry-based and problem solving based um and it really like i said it just lends itself to students own curiosity driving their learning so they will have choices of like i said choice time where they choose which center they want to spend the most time in and it's the teacher's job to capitalize on that interest and take that as an opportunity to ask open-ended questions you know teach concepts on in pretty much spontaneously and that's where that magic with our teachers comes in they know what their goals are and their job is just to kind of keep that in the back of their head and provide those opportunities for students to demonstrate what they know so that's my best explanation on the fly but um play play is like i said it's some people are calling it this four-letter word and it's we know that students need those social emotional opportunities and long term the data is starting to show that the financial for society and students own lifelong experiences and growth is just in just crazy impacted by this approach so i can provide that data but it might be referenced in the memo as well i think at the bottom yes will teachers mean more manpower in the classroom that's a great question so what we'll initially be trying to do is provide some more support especially in the area of collecting that data on in a spontaneous manner and using the checklist you know even in a gifted setting some of the like even northwestern uses that for their summer school programs they've got people that support the teacher to collect data and i think if we could get something like that underway for our teachers that would be extremely helpful i know that we discussed it a little bit today and in terms of providing them other supports our pre-k teachers are also very well versed in purposeful play so they're sort of an internal support system and we do have ideas to support teachers in other ways but i don't know if i'm at liberty to talk about it right now um we have ideas and it's moving pretty quickly now that we're putting this in front of you and asking for your support so but yes to answer your question yes it's always helpful to get other adults especially into a kindergarten room in general but to help collect the data especially how much time would that the kids be standing in the play area so the teacher will teach a lesson and the kids will go off into yeah it varies it varies to be honest when we look at a purposeful place schedule there's many different you know correct purposeful place schedules out there but i would say that they'll the teachers will follow a general schedule they'll have their specials where they still need to take their kids to specials so it's it's not like we're going to put students in a room and just they play all day that's not how it is it's very actually structured so the mini lesson time is probably about 15 20 minutes max because we know they have short attention attention spans but in general i would say that there's um probably two parts of our day where it is going to be play-based purposeful play where and i don't want to say exactly how much time that they're going to spend but i would say 45 minutes to an hour each time maybe a little bit more but that's when that teacher is making rounds and working with individual students or small groups so it's it's intentionally set up setting up the way that the classroom looks and feels to make sure that they're hitting those very important foundational skills but i would say maybe two two and a half hours where there's it's solid play and actually that's why i referenced at the beginning of the memo too that when we switched to a full day kindergarten model um our poor teachers i can't i don't remember what the reaction was back then but it's hard because they're they are so little and we need to make sure we're structuring the day but also providing time for them to um be developmentally appropriate in a developmentally appropriate setting and not sitting in a desk all day so our teachers do a great job of sectioning their schedule out now but this is really going to give them permission to do what they've always said they wanted which was this purposeful play model because we know what's best for kids do you expect the referral numbers to go down part of that too is is again this idea of allowing our teachers to set up environments where students are allowed to experience things and get feedback and grow and when you think about kindergarten students they don't always know that it's not appropriate to poke or touch or you know do other things so i would say yes um and it's really our job as administration to support them in maybe observing some of those behaviors but re-teaching in the moment as opposed to sending out of the classroom i think it'd be interesting to see that data how's this going to say can we get the data yes we have collected all the time we have a system called swiss where all of our office referral data is entered in and i know our assistant principals and principals do a great job of analyzing that on a very regular basis with their pbis teams i think at some point too it might be nice to see what the miners are that the five and six-year-olds are written up for 1800 is a lot yeah yeah and again i'll say that as a district we've and i will use dr king's word nationally not as just as a district nationally we've set up this expectation for our youngest learners and it's not always it hasn't been fair we've had a huge emphasis on academics but like i said the research is starting to show that you can push academics and push academics and push academics and if you're not addressing this other side of this emotional intelligence and the development of their social skills it's um very detrimental to them long term yeah you have some good balance of both so now we're trying to find a better balance any other questions so out of the bullets here we would just need on item d uh when to talk of purposeful play comes the creative curriculum which will provide some structure for the teachers in implementing the purposeful play so we're just thinking seeking approval on your uh for from the board uh to uh implement the creative curriculum all right does anybody have any further questions on creative curriculum no no can i please have a motion to approve the implementation of creative curriculum in our kindergarten program beginning with the 2021-2022 school year motion second enters and plus yet yes yes yes yes uh yes all right so next i'm gonna jump down to uh item f moody's rating update um you have exhibit 20 in exhibit 21.

2021-04-13 Kendall County, IL YouTube / BOE Stream transcript source: youtube SD308 Board of Education Meeting (4/12/2021) · passage 2
only 15 was years was a good job i have committee reports go ahead [Music] this is my last full board meeting and as you all know me it is no surprise i have something to say and i will do so in less than four minutes if i had to sum up all the things i believe and have learned over the last four years it's this public education matters as you reflect on what i have to say please ask yourself these questions does education play an important role in your life how did it prepare you with knowledge did it perhaps provide you with long-standing relationships friendships a sense of community a greater understanding of the world around you if you answered yes to any or all of these questions then you know how important public education is and you know that schools give us so much more than an academic education yes public schools are paid for by all of us in the community and the state with our tax money which can be contentious since we pay sometimes for things that we don't use or we might not even like but we still come together and say even if you're not a swimmer we have a pool where you can swim even if you're not a science olympiad we will pay for your transportation to go to the state competition even if you're not a future tradesman we will pay for the facility for you to learn carpentry skills and even if you're not in need of daily nursing care we will pay for a nurse to care for you at school we know that education has an impact on every one of us individually and collectively and it's a different education for every person it's truly amazing the number of things that we cover in that education we learn science so that we can decide to do what what we're going to do when the pandemic comes we learn finances so that we can understand budgeting we learn social and emotional skills so that when we don't get what we want exactly we can handle it maturely we learn music so that we can sing at karaoke night or when the curtain goes up we learn visual arts so that we can doodle and imagine and capture images that change the world we learn math so that we know the probabilities involved getting a traffic ticket risking the lives of your entire staff and the chance that students will choose life instead of harm and last of all we learned history and civics so that we know that it is crucial for us to participate in a democracy and to vote in all elections in the past schools took on the burdens of family life for years while parents had to work long hours or got divorced or tried to cope with the many tricky aspects of raising children schools offered more comfort counseling attention food and assistance than was ever recognized perhaps by some in the community during this year of the pandemic the shift was the other way around families had to offer more tech help tutoring counseling medical help and socialization than they were given credit for for this i would like to thank all the folks at home that held and are still holding up the fabric of a public education for our students i hope that when the teachers and administrators return to five days a week they do not abdicate their responsibility to get students to the highest levels possible public education matters and we can deliver it to all of our students with both kindness and a firm commitment it matters that we both say and think this now and always it is not perfect but i have taught in five school districts and lived in more than eight and i have known many many of our students here and at other places and i know that we're doing very honorable and strong work so thank you my sincere appreciation for the thread you weave and what you do for the tapestry of our district i think it's beautiful and i hope it keeps strong for many years to come and i didn't cry so there you go but i just wanted to say that public education does matter you tony um the only comment i'm going to make is that again as tony mentioned this is the last full board meeting for four of our board members and i want to again express my gratitude for your time and service this year especially but in all of your years of service hopefully you don't become strangers and public education absolutely matters and i think that that's the one commonality no matter what else we disagree on i think everybody at this table agrees that public education matters um and so i appreciate everybody giving their time to support that well i'll make a comment then since i didn't realize we wouldn't be really commenting at the next meeting but it makes sense we will we will one and tony had a nice thing so full because the new incoming members will have their swearing in or whatever at the end of their i will yield my time back to the chairwoman and i will hold my coverage for another two weeks although you have a formality you know but marking yourself present mr lightfoot i have to tell you i have read robert's rules of order many many times recently and i have noted that an answer of present is actually the correct answer according to parliamentary procedure there is no allowance to mark yourself here that is a practice we have taken on in our policies but it is not technically speaking there so i applaud your correctness so going forward we should all we should also present all [Laughter] no and if we addressed all of robert's rules you would never get through the meeting well this is just this is true we could start with page one um all right anything else all right item 5.2 board committee reports matt you want to go you want me to do it you got it fantastic i wrote a post-it note because we met almost a month ago um i was smart about that um on march 22nd we had a meeting with val for policy and legislative we had a presentation on the rights and responsibilities the one big change in the code that we noted that parents especially of junior high parents might want to be aware of is that there is now going forward an addition of a junior high cell phone policy which means that at all five junior highs uh cell phones may only be used before 8 to 10 a.m or after 3 10 p.m so according to this policy there will not be cell phones at lunch which is going to start some of these little guys twitching after the year they've had so be ready for that because that's coming next year we did some bus safety protocols we're gonna need the ice cream line if you're gonna take away their phones um so dawn came in and did a a presentation on what they did and one of our members and i it's been so long i can't remember but one of our members suggested putting up a qr code or creating a text kind of as if you see something say something to kind of put on the buses um and it i don't want to say it fell on deaf ears but i'm just repeating it so it would be a little louder i actually think that's a great idea because i think a lot of times um people in the community don't know where to call unless they have a kitten so if they see a bus and i know we have cameras and stuff but so and then uh dr hildebrand came in gave us a quick sped update on policy 7 colon 230 which is on [Music] i want to say i saw it somewhere tonight information maybe no no no no i don't see them you're not all right and then 240 is on for an action item and 8 30 is on for information and those refer to um board member qualifications and community relations and we didn't really have any big changes done ancient history there you go i was going to make a joke about if a month ago as agent like what are what are we but then i decided not to that was not my quality of a joke um okay item 5.3 all right good evening board so i'm going to echo what mrs swanson said and last friday night oswego east high school and ohs played their annual football game and i'd like to say congratulations to the oswego east wolves on winning the game 14 to seven it's the first time they've won the game in their history so congratulations to all the students athletes and uh the coaching staff in the fourth quarter in the fourth quarter that is correct that's a fun game very very much so uh last week was national assistant principals week i wanted to take a moment to thank all of our assistant principals for their dedication and leadership to our school district we've got a very talented group of 308 aps and i thought it was appropriate to acknowledge and um i guess the reason i'm applying for a variance is you know in looking well i guess i have a few things on my mind but um you know there's 29 other renters who have the same that are in the same complex and all of these buildings are built exactly the same there's 64 units and there's 29 other owners that are also renting their property and no one's made any structural changes to the outside of their uh property so i did talk to my um person who works in my house as well as someone who you know would help me on the mechanical side of things so someone more than my standard person and you know putting a window in there putting a larger window just isn't going to be possible according to our bylaws of the condo association the other thing that we tossed around is a skylight which is another way i guess sometimes these things are solved also not possible so that brought me to applying for a variance which is where i'm at now um my question here is it's you know i'm there's two large rooms upstairs one of which you know i've always just considered them both bedrooms but i've always just lived there as a single person occasionally with a roommate um but i've never rented it out to more than two people and i'm wondering if it's just a one bedroom like that this other room is just in another room as well so i don't know i guess that's all i have to say all right thanks marty no need to be nervous that's we're just i know it's all over our screens it's a little bit different i know this probably works out even better for you chris christian this is lisa stalter can i can i say something as a real estate agent and i've sold several of those units back there and they are originally i believe designed as apartments and then they were converted to condominiums it seems to me like they at one time were all rentals and i'm wondering why why this applicant is having to to make a structural change like that when we know that i think if you talk to the association because i just sold one over there i think that there are 22 current rentals out of the 60 uh two units right now and nobody else is having to do that and i guess i'll bring that back to staff um and through the rental program glenn or brandon if you can address that question oh brandon i'm not sure if you you're involved in any of the other projects i you know i'm unaware of it i will tell you that it was not built appropriately to the code at that time um while it's not there it doesn't give us allowances on you as a renter to go forward when when i'm aware of it and became became aware of it with my inspector finding this this issue there may be non-structural allowances that could be done to correct it and that's that was the mechanical continuous fan for a bathroom that brings in additional air um or you know moves air or the other thing while i understand the windows themselves are difficult and you may have an issue with your your association or management company um i think you have other options that might be available yeah and and to be honest i i would not be going back trying to enforce code on other other properties as you had mentioned there are several that may have the same issue 28 other properties are being rented out right that are exactly the same as my unit well i understand that unfortunately we're guided by our housing and building codes uh when we become aware of them i'm not sure what took place with regards to um these other units i just i looked up a lot and it doesn't seem like anyone else is applying for the same kind of variance so i don't know that's why i'm feeling i'm sorry it's lisa stelter again is there no fan in the bathroom currently uh i don't believe so i honestly don't remember it's been like a year or two since i've lived there a question for staff would would a fan in the bathroom be acceptable or would that have to be located in the bedroom no i think a a continuous operating fan in the bathroom would most likely meet those requirements you know that's something for the mechanical contractor to figure out but i believe that we've had that situation happen in past occur you know situations like this i'm sorry i don't know what a continuous operating fan is you explain that so in more of our modern homes newer homes when you go in you have a light switch and you have a switch that turns the fan on a continuous working fan would not have a switch it would just always be operating unlike an operable window that you can close and have no ventilation correct correct i have a question about that just because i also manage a property in there and i've managed two at a time in there that have always had the cfo so i understand the frustration because i've never been cited for that pretty sure there is a bathroom fan there i would be concerned about a neighboring unit may or may not be a rental if that fan causes any noise it's noisy situations because sometimes when you have a neighbor if that fan runs continuously that might be an issue just uh not throwing it out there to create more drama it's just that if it runs all the time it could bother a neighbor because there's usually at least one if not two adjoining units in those buildings so i i do understand again there are code requirements whether they were fully met or not when it was constructed we have um noise requirements or sound transmission requirements in the code hopefully those have been met if they if they weren't i'm guessing that we'd be getting complaints or calls that people can hear the people next door right do we know if any of the other units have this continuous fan going right now or have had this requirement i'm unaware of any uh not knowing okay i mean i looked i looked up as much history as i could on the other units especially the ones that i know that are rentals and i don't see any additional applications for this kind of variance so i mean i'm yeah i'm not i can't i can't know everything but from what i can tell no with the associate do we know if the association since they won't let you change the windows will the association allow for a continuously running fan to be installed um i i don't know they're they're fairly big sticklers on a lot of things uh yes i know i've seen several in email so i was bringing up the noise complaint yeah uh i'm not exactly sure i mean the the neighbors around me it's a my current renter is a widowed like six-year-old woman and then the person next to her my neighbor is uh probably about the same age like so i don't i don't have any other information and and i'm assuming from the floor but that was designed and intended as a bedroom from day one correct this is a two bedroom unit probably taxed that way as well correct and jerry these were apartments managed by wilson white for years okay so they've passed these rental inspections probably for i don't even know i think they converted to they they were allowed to be converted to condos in 2000 or 2002 when i look back at how the deed got transferred are the windows original as far as you know yeah the windows i mean as far as i know every unit is like i went to every single unit that would be equivalent to mine and they all still have the same setup and they all still like look the same as mine because i mean we can't make changes i actually called the um the folks that run the property management yesterday just to kind of hash through like what are the options and none of those are the options so thanks for that discussion i you know i is a as a regulatory professional in my kind of day job this is particularly tricky for me because i i really strive to see um fair and equal application of rules and you know it sounds like we have a gap in our knowledge in terms of like how many others may or may not have you know if they've been altered to have these fans or not um so that's certainly a question i think it's important to answer because i do want to see that on the other hand when we know of a problem saying nobody else has done it doesn't necessarily mean that we don't want to make corrections where we can um so i i'm i'm a bit torn on this one i have to say normally these are pretty straightforward and so i mean it's been 20 years that it's been potential rental properties it seems like it's one of the first times it's come here no other units had to go through this um and it's just it's i've never rented it out for more than one person so i can't really tell them where to sleep i mean i personally slept in the other in the room that qualifies for the light and ventilation when i lived there um this person chose to sleep in this other room so it's never been treated like more than a one bedroom it and this other room has just been used for an office that's what i used it for that staff is it an option to just list it as a non-sleeping bedroom and approve it that way without having to um approve the variant i guess is the question that that may assist a little bit um i'm not sure if we've had some of those in the past similar to that request but uh you know it's it's definitely requires a certain ventilation in there and if it's not met um you know if it's not occupied uh would be a thing possibly um other options although they they you know take other consideration into place whether the room was uh had a closet added i mean there are other ways to possibly make it not that that would be a requirement but that's that's something else that might come up but um the rules it is uh whether it's with a study or a bedroom or whatever would still have the requirements for the four percent right so regardless of the usage it has to have the ventilation glenn do you mind if i try middle on this a little bit please so my name is john reiser hello folks i'm a relatively new city attorney and i have on one screen the munich code where it talks about uh what the standards are so under eight section 502 it does talk about minimum standards for light and ventilation and i don't know if you have that in front of you but for ventilation it says every habitable room shall have at least one window sliding glass dot dot dot the total area for ventilation shall be at least four percent of the habitable work floor area of the room served and they do talk about you being able to do mechanical ventilation in lieu of natural ventilation if approved by the building official as affording ventilation in accordance with the standard ventilation requirements and the mechanical code so i don't know if that's a ceiling fan or i don't know if that's a continuous fan and i would defer to glen dempsey for that but with respect to the definitional aspect you know 1 through 26 of 8 500 it does define what it is to be a under parent 14 habitable room area enclosed floor space used or intended to be used for living sleeping cooking or eating purposes including bathrooms toilet compartments laundries pantries foyers corridors closet storage spaces areas whether have you seen all this uh maybe you have this up in front of you or maybe you don't under 8500 14.

um it's all proportional tusd has lost 13.5 million it's already lost over a million depending on the size it's a similar proportion mr edlund's staff did some work today in school europe to communicate with families who were not going to follow the engineering program we had when we were online program only and we had some success but not successful we hope but we don't know we hope that we get a significant percent of the students off if we go to a full regular schedule next year i'm optimistic until i saw the internet today cdc is asking one state to shut down because of a variance um there's also a news report that the cases for under 16 years of age has gone 20 percent nationwide not just arizona so i'm not talking about pima county auto arizona so these are trends that a week ago i was not aware of if they were there i miss them so we still have challenges but we can't make a deficit budget we can't uh budget for money we don't have um state frowns upon that and we can't print our own dollars and be successful so um i've talked about this a little bit online talk about it more because we're going to have to make a decision probably within the next less than 30 days um so this is what and this this cut here that i want to give you position number one is fifty eight thousand dollars 925 and four cents but i wanted the board to know that not just salary is the cost in very rough terms when we have an employee that works 30 hours or more a week we can figure that their salary plus 20 plus 5 000 is the cost of that position in the district and i've laid that out here a little bit so this is the person obviously versus one 30 hours a week they qualify for retirement their seller is forty four thousand nine sixty eight fifty the retirement portion of the district page is employee place i'm sorry employee pays the same amount that the district does it's 5414.21 the district pays 278 in social security medical insurance 45 21 long-term disability 8.94 and medicare is 652.

so just for your information just so you can kind of see how these formulas work it's just showing all cash available plus what we brought in minus what we spent if you were to take the revenues here on the side number two where it says state equalization assistance you could do what i did and then i'll show you where to find this number that's 6.4 million for the year if you want to write a 6.4 i put mine way over on the left margin where it says it equalization put it wherever you want but that's 6.4 million that includes uh all the money that we get but guess how much we got in july you can look there it's a zero the state's got this little deal that they they they pay us late but we have to back date and secure and that's their own trick so there's nothing received in july even though they're supposed to do a 12th of it over overtime they don't give us anything in your life it all has to go back to you so then you walk drop down to four or five there the levy fund oval one and the levy fund 610 that's 7.6 million numbers four and five just for your information and then you say well so 6.4 7.6 that's 14 million then if you want to see where that comes from the way to the back of the big seats that karen stuck in your book here to the very last page just right here page 25 and you see them listed right here and it goes up toward the bottom there it says qualifying levy and you follow that across that's our local taxes there's the 7.6 trillion right here that's exactly what the state does for us you come down here you have equalization assistance the levy is the local the local effort for the property tax the equalization is what they kick in so that's your 6.4 and that's just where everything that i give you basically comes to either a state report or one of cindy's grant awards so that's what those numbers are and over time we will collect the 7.6 the 7.6 million in property tax and the 6.4 million in state equalization and i talked with the tracer and last year 2019 2020 the district collected something like 99.6 percent of property tax due and extremely high percent so if we've levied the amount which was against 7.6 million will come really close to that that's really all i had for this report just showing you how some of those things tie in any questions mr livingston um student activity fund report this again is i think really good news to look at the far rights of the balances 112 000.

normally they are 7 15 to 5. we have tried going later and what we find is that it's super dark up here and most people can get here by five so um it's a little bit that's why we we tried different times and five seems to work but we're always kind of watching that and also jenny i just want to commend you and i told you before that after you know 29 30 years in education that jenny is should be the poster child for continuous learning and staff development because she is not afraid to learn new things teach new things try new things she's always up with best practices and things that you've implemented and trainings that you've done and attended so thank you because you still have that energy and working with preschool and kinder kids is is not easy and you're doing a great job with your program so thank you we are also doing a toddler zoom this year which is free to parents we used to have a parent we called it mom dad grand man and tots long name but whatever included program on monday mornings and since we couldn't have them on site we put them on they're on a zoom so it's monday fridays and that's just 15 minutes but it's really cute that's really adorable we have some kids in high chairs for them so like today there's four so it's it's something small we can do to kind of get a little bit of you know early childhood out there so yeah so we hope to be full next year and back to our normal capacity and our normal staffing and all that it's just been a very a year of us being very very careful with what we're spending and trying very hard to be good stewards of what we have thank you 160 enough well i i don't want to crush the system too much like a graduated increase i mean from like from if we do 160 oh and look at it again in a year yeah fold increases ten dollars a week every year oh really wow yeah so that's um i know we haven't had we don't have a history of increasing on a regular basis and i think that is something to think about but we've also really we've been very fortunate that we've done you know really well with how we've been able to collect revenue so we've been able to do pretty well i don't know exactly why but so we can put it on our may agenda our main board agenda for approval and discussion okay so do you need to come back we can put it on the agenda but i don't okay if we have questions you know beforehand because we'll have time to prepare the item okay for the agenda right okay well thank you thank you very much go play with your marbles have fun thank you jenny ricco you're up okay well i'm going to apologize in advance for the slides because we do have a lot of information to cover so i will um speak quickly but there is a lot of information on this report so preparations for 2021 and 2022 we've had interview panels have been formed with various grade level teachers to interview for vacancies in the past continental was not used to having teachers classroom teachers on interview panels so four years ago when i became superintendent we started to invite teachers to be part of the process because i truly feel that if you're going to get a grade level team member the team needs to have a say in who they're going to be working with so we've interviewed 20 candidates the last few weeks and our interview committees of staff change pending what position we're hiring for so we have an elementary but we always include a middle school teacher in that realm also and vice versa specialists when it came to hiring our pe teacher and our music teacher definitely including our specialist team changes are being made to meet long-term content planning and instructional goals so again we look at our staff and placing staff in the right seats of our bus or in the right spot on our ship in terms of performance and how they're doing teaching their content and how we um recommendations that mrs huevos and i and mr nathan have come two different agreements to move staffing around and obviously working with christine on hr title one our integrated action plans our curriculum committee and admin advisory committees have worked to identify our primary instructional needs and develop strategies and action steps committee members are also working on adding metrics to our strategic plan so all of this is due and uploaded to title 1 by may 1st so that's the work that the teachers have done that we'll be putting into the system for title 1.

so it doesn't say governor's sign it just says sign but i can give you a little bit of a background this was actually a senate bill that was introduced last year but died in the senate education so we've never made it out of the education this year it's there was a there was one in a house last year as well and i believe he had also died in the house education committee um but there's a bill in both houses they both passed they reconciled and this is where we're at i mean there's not much that we can do from this point um as i told dina there hasn't been a whole lot of guidance that has come out i have no idea what the effective date of this is going to be because some bills have effective dates that are a year down the road some have you know at the beginning of the fiscal year so i as of right now i still don't have that information there's been no guidance from ade or anyone else as to how that that performance pay and the base pay is supposed to be allocated so there's nothing there i mean right now the way i'm reading it it's all up in the air it's up to you guys to propose something to the board whether it be a 50 50 split 60 60 40 if you want to just using round numbers if total 301 payments five thousand dollars you have to propose and it would be up to the board to approve that four thousand nine hundred ninety nine dollars performance pay and a dollar went into your base or vice versa or you know but right now there is no guidance as to how to do any of that so then because of that there's no effective date there's no guidance whatever is it possible to try to not fix something that isn't broken as far as concern would it be possible to vote on the plan as we have it since if you're asking for an opinion i would say to propose like you would normally propose and if we have if work comes down down the road that this is how it has to be and it's completely different than how our plan is and we'd have to go back to the drawing board bring to another plan and get it voted on and get it approved but i my opinion would be status quo until we give more information and i have a superintendency in pima county soup meeting on thursday so we will bring this to the table and this is where i mean we might form letters for the governor to you know maybe get a letter with all of your signatures on it coming from continental um to address that and also as they look at it which now permits bending for student support services which is otp and as you know the cost to educate special needs students is very expensive and so we don't get the money the full funding for a special needs student so i imagine that districts nationally are struggling paying otpts and they don't in the past they haven't benefited from 301 monies because it was strictly classroom teachers and the support services for otp were not included in that right so with the whole movement on equity and special needs students i imagine that really had um you know a play in this decision so job site i i'm just looking for a little a little bit of clarity which i think all of us are on on the bill but it's my understanding that the bill the bill does a couple things it it changes the framework for 301 um and how to construct a 301 plan um it it makes it easier to allocate 301 funds to to to expenditures that elsewhere other than other than performance pay but it doesn't it doesn't make it harder to get those 301 funds to teachers you just need to adjust the framework is that is that true correct okay so we though we may be required to adjust the framework we could still or the district could still do decide to invest the same percentage of 301 fun 301 monies received by the state to teachers correct so the state is not saying that you can no longer distribute 100 to teachers you have okay so thank you so maybe this will help because i've got the bill in front of me um here are the changes to how the money can be distributed um it originally said teacher compensation increases they've struck increases and put in including a base pay the performance pay component and then they added student support services which was the new new otp and school psychologists those are the only changes to the framework as to how but to go to your point the 20 40 40 is gone does that help answer your question joe no that answered my question i was just curious if the state was saying um you you can are moving forward you can only uh you can only distribute 60 to teachers and the other 40 needs to go elsewhere there isn't there's no language in there that says that okay so if you kind of put this in that smorgasbord of items that it can be used for it can still be used for classroom size reduction they can still be used for assessment intervention programs teacher development dropout prevention programs teacher liability insurance framework those are still in there we as continental have never at least as far back as i can see we have never done any of that and all of this has gone strictly into teacher compensation incomes so it could be that performance paid whatever percentage we decide to go for um based base pay and salary pay we could still include a percentage of performance k to look like some of part c does it say we can't have buckets within the two buckets right no okay so so on the 15th so thursday when i meet with the superintendents we'll have more direction as to what we can do but we really do have to start to begin thinking proactively to get our word out to the governor because he's the one that's gonna determine when this is gonna go into effect and really what the parameters will be for arizona for our teachers but i thank you very much for this time two minutes left so real quick in the years that i've been on the board in that that we really try to put as much money as available to you guys i mean seriously there's not anything getting over i mean there's a little of course for a rainy day in case we've got to fill a position but that's it it's like when the red bread came about all that money women out so i don't see any reason why the 301 would be any different obviously we don't know what color it's going to look like when it comes in but just to be sure that we recognize where arizona is on the totem pole which is shameful even if you add all the other stuff into it but we as a district are doing the best we can to to help you guys as best we and we really do appreciate you thank you thank you for the comment i you know it was strictly up to me and it wasn't finances whatsoever i think every starting salary for a teacher ought to be sixty thousand dollars right that's my opinion uh and ten fifteen years later uh if you're a good teacher and you're and the kids are learning and they're progressing we ought to have six digit salaries for some teachers i really believe that um and so yeah we're going to do and continue to do everything we can to enhance the the compensation of of the staff here at continental and work in any way we can with the restrictions that we get out of phoenix thank you all for choosing us for coming to work here um many of you have have taught my kids very graciously my dad and i do really appreciate everything that you guys do and it's my understanding all these hoops you have to jump through to earn the 301 funds you guys came up with that yourself i i was i'm really impressed compared to other school districts how much less harder they are working for theirs i i think it says a lot about this the school and whom they have working here so thank you very much thank you so i just wanted what will be happening you know and maybe i'm reading into this i just i do want to just share this because i i've been here in the school district since 1995.

i won't spend a lot of time but we recently were upgraded to an a1 status for moody's on exhibit 21 you'll see it's kind of a little blurry but you'll see a history maybe it's blurring my glasses aren't off here we go you'll see a history of our ratings uh in 2000 um 2012 we in 13 we were a1 and then a2 is a step down in 1314 and then at 15 is where it drops pretty far down b double a3 and it stayed there uh we've gradually climbed out of we were most recently in 2019 we were b double a1 and this year they upgraded us to a1 which is a good upgrade so it really doesn't mean a whole lot in my mind because we're not going out to seek any bonds anytime soon but if we were to it's a lot better position for us any questions on that all right next i'm going to bring up matt mccully our technology director to talk about the three-year tech plan which we reviewed with the technology committee recently good evening everybody um so usually we do this yearly unfortunately last year when it was our time to do our tech updates well things things kind of ended for a little while there um in march so that's why there's a lot going on in the beginning of this memo where we talk about all the things we've done because it's the last two years all the upgrades and updates that we've done you know the thing that i want to emphasize and stress that i'm most proud of is our team has really started develop we now have two employees besides myself in the department and you know in the last few months things have been a lot more streamlined for us there's a lot less pressure because there's more people to kind of spread around with so it's been a huge help having alex and holly helping me out in the department you know a lot of we learned a lot of things this year with going from having 200 teachers or 200 staff members that we support to now having 2 000 people that we're supporting on a daily basis and not just in three buildings but you know in three different towns we're we've been spread out and that's been hard but because of that i think we've gotten a lot of good things to move forward with and we we have a lot of things that we're going to be presenting to you tonight and a lot of things that goals that we have pushing us forward moving forward for the next year we put a lot of our projects off this year because all of our focus was on trying to get the classrooms ready and the teachers ready and the students ready for all the remote learning that we've been doing so some of the things that we pushed off is putting cameras in the elementary and primary building that's an infrastructure thing that we've been wanting to do we're going to be updating all the teachers desktops this year the reason we're going that directions we feel like we were in an environment we had to do this again that's the area that if we had a solid ability to stream or one machine in the room that was able to stream that we would have put our teachers in a better better position for that um some other big projects that we're looking at is and i wanted to take the big projects moving forward not only is how can we help remote if we had to go remote again but how can we help those students and those teachers within the classroom as well so how can we find projects that will be dual based so one of those projects that we're looking at doing is putting in a microphone system within the classroom there's a lot of good research out that having a microphone system in the classroom not only helps engagement and increases engagement within the classroom but it's also something we can use for for streaming some other things we put off our big chromebook purchase just because there wasn't there weren't chromebooks to be purchased last summer so we are we're gonna be replacing 870 of our older chromebooks this year over the summer we already have about 350 in it's one of those things though it's a it's going to be gradually coming in over the summer just with all the supply chain and everything that's going on in the world and some other big projects we're looking at is our our phone system really is the last system that predates me um so we are looking to upgrade that so it's something that we have a better control of and we can give better support to our staff with so we're looking at doing a voice over ip uh i'm sure we're aware that every four four months or so there's some sort of phone outage due to some sort of whether it be a natural disaster outside or construction crew cutting our lines or just something that is kind of is out of our control with having the voice over ip we really haven't had any down time with our our comcast lines so moving over to the internet we think it's going to be a better better option for our staff you know and then we're looking at trying to get involved into some of the curriculum with the the elementary the primary in the middle school computer classes and trying to stream like that and look to see how we can continue to improve there as well as start to work with grant a little bit because i know i mean we've been told that sometimes our kids go over there and they're they're a step ahead just because of what we've been able to put in place here at the middle school so you know we want to support them to have an avenue for beyond a big hollow so a lot of these projects are put in for next year in part because we have been getting a lot of budget money recently um from all the different grants that are out there so we we did put as many as we could on the front end just because i think all these improvements will put us in a better position for the years to come you know we will continue over the next three years to constantly assess our network constantly assess the infrastructure and constantly assess the end user's experience as far as what devices they have in their hands it's always something that's always changing you know we can make make a three-year plan but come august there could be something new and and more exciting out there so we do have to keep keep that in mind um the last thing i do want to address is coming up is there's a new law that has been passed it's been out for about 18 months but july 1st is when it takes effect and it's called sopa student online there's privacy protection act um we did have to purchase some software there to to help us with this because what it basically entails is every product that we use that involves student data we have to make sure that we have a contract on file with that vendor that says they're one aware of this law and they're going to comply with this law we have to post that publicly so we begin we've begun that process of gathering all the information to put on a public database to share with the community we also have to if there's any data breach have a place where we we put that um you know if a company which we know happens all the time we hear in the news that a company has some sort of data breach and so many people's information got put out you know if that happens and it's our information we have to make sure that we're posting that and we have things in place to mitigate that so that is going to take up a lot of our next few months as we prepare for that um you know the biggest thing is getting those contracts and making sure that all of the all of the programs that we're using is are going to comply with that and that's it's going to have to take effect july 1st so those are those are the highlights of what we have coming up i'm happy to take anything i want to get question i want to just get some feedback on one item on on matt's updates on 21-22 most of all of that we have it's not a budget issue until we get to the cameras for prime elementary we did a big camera upgrade for middle school we have not done the camera upgrade for prime elementary which will be a it'll be a significant cost we put 90 to 000 in there and so we have not done that we can do that this summer if we uh but it's not it's not an emergency so that's what i'm want to get your feedback i guess it would be a it would be a fun 60 purchase the other the building grounds committee met and and it was in the minutes or in the notes here for the consent agenda the other big project we have to do this summer that really we we have to do is is one of those things that uh you just you hate to spend the money on it but we have to fix the concrete and curbs are pretty bad we got some a lot if you've driven around the parking lot and that's going to be a pricey item that we'll bring to you at the next board meeting we're going to do a we'll have a bid opening here soon and we'll present that to you so that's that's going to be a significant uh but then other than that this summer should be kind of quiet and i just haven't i haven't been able to really it's going to depend on like do we want to tap into fun 60 to pay for the camera upgrade now or do you want to wait uh it's not something that i guess i just want to get some feedback from the board is what you think we should do in that area if we waited when would you do it or recommend to do it well if we don't do it this summer we should do it next summer uh so you wait a whole year to do it then yeah because it's it's hard to do during the school year there's a lot of uh running wire and installing cameras all throughout the building so we have does does the plane include enhancing the coverage like it did here yes yes yeah right now i think we have um 24 total cameras between the two buildings indoors um the the plan i believe it was about 80 just because we didn't really we don't really have any coverage i mean we have coverage in front of the bathrooms coverage a little bit of coverage in the cafeteria we added some coverage into the gymnasium because we had outside groups using it so we did add six cameras when we did this project um two in the cafeterias and then um four in the two gyms um it's just it's an analog system right now that we are using what about the exterior the exterior um we did do the exterior when we did the the middle school exterior i believe that was over spring break we did last year okay yeah this is just internal then so the last piece of the project is the interior of the primary elementary yeah so for me i think it's if you don't spend the money now yeah yeah you don't want to be regretting this later that you didn't spend it that's something it could be more unfortunate it happens yeah for safety yeah okay so i think it's an important thing all right thank you we'll go ahead and start then we'll just start getting bids and we'll bring it back to you okay any other questions on the plan there i think the only question it's for future future switching to tablets or convertibles so you're thinking getting away from chromebooks and doing something else it's 2023 yeah you know i i myself have a kindergartner and a second grader so i'm getting a lot more of a perspective on the primary side of things my background prior to this was all high school so seeing my kids try to use the chromebooks at home you know one is great with it but i have a lefty and trying to teach her how to use the chromebook has been a challenge um and i can totally see how you know she might have benefited from having something that's strictly a tablet strictly a touch i also think that there's curriculum and the in the primary level seems to be geared more towards the tool being better at a tablet or or a convertible something that they can use uh where it's more the touching than the keyboard and the mouse so so that is something that's on the radar um i was just worried about like um you know kids fumble things whatever i was just thinking about maintenance wise you know right as a tablet yeah the chromebook it's a little safer kid you know doesn't matter yeah yeah oh yeah jobs are are always or it's always something we deal with on a daily basis with something coming in and physical but you know the the technology is getting better and stronger and more durable all right thank you thank you very much thank you man item h we already talked about dr pittman talked about summer school learning opportunities we'll be sending something out this week to parents so we're going to encourage again she said it was going to be free to parents and we're going to cover the cost through some of the uh the esser grant that's coming through for covet recovery so i could start a question did um do we have enough teachers volunteer for that yeah so far we've we've got offerings at every grade level okay so yeah um and we're willing to if we fill up classes like dr pittman said we're willing to open up for more perfect oh thank you i just want to say a shout out to them for especially after the year we've had so for them to volunteer i appreciate that very much absolutely i think that's a great thing thank you absolutely and that's it for my report kevin all right thank you anybody have any questions on the employment recommendations no no can i please have a motion to approve the march employment recommendations motion second laser heater yes yes yes yes yes all right resignations we accepted a resignation from jodie baum bus driver effective april 2nd we accepted a resignation from christina hagen as sixth and eighth grade girls basketball coach effective at the end of the school year we accepted a resignation from val reil sixth grade ela teacher effective may 28 2021.

if the decision cannot be made tonight then we would request the school board to hold a special meeting at the earliest convenience to conclude on this matter the time for the 2021 senior class is about to expire so please don't prolong your decision thank you for your time and consideration sincerely your student body thank you thank you libby and thank you again to everybody that showed up and i appreciate coming and expressing concerns very well written and very well received by board so i appreciate it thank you written communications none administrative reports go to bes um i'll add to the report that we had kindergarten roundup on friday and we had 46 kids attend roundup forces that's a 44 contact us today that missed the roundup that uh is looking to come so hopefully we'll have a few more middle school probably the biggest news is the last bullet on there we have we have no remote partners at this time we're 100 in person good news uh that i think contributes to everyone's efforts they put in to maintain a healthy environment so thank you high school really have anything i've got quite a bit on there uh we're a band uh concert uh on friday can we have another one coming up and uh i think when i was writing it down i think it was in may 7th and really it was supposed to be april 7th but it looked good i also truly want to say something about my students here i truly truly appreciate what how they handled it they did everything the right way uh being an old government teacher uh that they came and brought it to me i gave them some basic information on what i thought should happen and how they handled it is very commendable uh by me and i want to tell them thank you you guys did an outstanding job and people like mr watkins and i are very proud of you so i think no yeah the board is proud of you guys too that's awesome um i have something to add first i want to commend our students a fantastic job the second thing this is deals with uh before you today just in the fact that you have um the list of coaches and extracurricular sponsors one of the things it's been past practice one of the things i would like to see is look at is changing the past practice with our rule 10 we have always opened left them as open we are seeing more and more real tense and we have frankly some fantastic real ten coaches to have them see that position open have to reapply year in and year out not to mention if we have a head coaching position that's a rule 10 and that gets posted and then we have the influx and if that person goes through a positive evaluation from mr rudin myself i feel like they should have the opportunity to retain them without reopening it again so again it's not policy it's just been practice so i would like to be able to move forward in may and still list those if they are wanting to be brought back for the following year and part of the reason it's been that practice is because the the hope was i guess that you might draw some teachers that would be interested in coaching to come for teaching positions from my understanding from years past and that's why those positions were open we are finding fewer and fewer new staff members are really interested in doing extracurricular activities it's unfortunate because a lot of people i remember when i got into teaching back in 1991 i wanted to do things like coach baseball coach basketball things like that we're not finding that as much and again when we have excellent people working with our young you know our young students uh and our older students as well not only you know high school middle school we want to keep those people on board and so i i would i would really support that that plan as well if they're getting excellent evaluations doing a wonderful job we i think we need to keep them on board so has it just been a practice or it's a policy open up every rule 10 position every year and then you go back through the whole i guess the process if you will of whether you have people interviewing or not interviewing yes so if we just say we agree with you then you just want to open it up correct if you would agree to that then what we would do is if they're doing a good job we keep them on board and that we don't list those as open positions i don't know if you have any other questions for us on that topic does anybody have any strong opinion about whether those jobs are posted or i think that it makes sense that if they if someone's given a positive evaluation and they want to retain the position hey we think you're doing a good job let's continue that path so that makes sense to me thank you yeah mike here celine did you have any comments or anything for the real 10 coaches no i can support that that makes sense to me anything else for high school special ed report um a lot of the same stuff we do this time of year in terms of evaluating staffing positions and hiring and starting to look at pair positions for the future and things like that so we were very fortunate to receive quality applicants for our two position professional positions our school psych and our speech path so we're very excited about that anybody any questions for lindsay on special ed move to technology report and we've got the looks like capability summary for this year yes sir um if i could real quick i've got a social media post i'm going to share that i think that i think reflects and then tracy doesn't have it on there because it literally just came in last night and i think it reflects on things that are happening in the middle school in the high school as it relates to reverence for the flag and reverence for our country but also in terms of values that are our core values that our coaches teach as a part of of our program and and how we teach reverence for the flag for the national anthem for our country itself uh the post reads hi all our silverlight team i gotta put my glasses on i hate when it happens when i start to fog up our silverlake team came down to your town to play baseball we were walking in and there were many kids out for track and running jumping and doing what tracks kids do as we were walking the national anthem started playing all your amazing kiddos stopped and saluted the flag no kidding around no laughing just awesome reverence for our flag and country this was awesome to see thank you for teaching these kids the importance of what our flag stands for proud american diana comstock topeka kansas so i just thought that was worth sharing too and we shared that with high school coaches and i know stacy shared that with the student body today as well so just wanted to share that with you all because that's a to me a real positive um i'm open to questions there are two bullets uh in the tech report uh that basically deal with will you continue the practice of selling laptops to the seniors for a hundred dollars that has been our past practice over the past three or four years it becomes an incentive for those freshmen as we tell them you're getting this new laptop and it's yours for the next four years and then when you're a senior you have this opportunity we have had knock on wood if i could find it less issues with broken machines and everything else over the past eight months than we have for the past four years and so our kids are doing an outstanding job and we're hoping that that goes a long way because last year we had right at 30 kids that bought 30 of the seniors bought their laptops for a hundred dollars from that standpoint so i would ask the board to please consider that as an ongoing item to be done i then wanted to let you know in addition to this capital outlay i'm also working with mr marshall with tracy and lindsey on esser funds and how we can use esser funds to accelerate three or four programs that are focused on remote learning uh from that standpoint so we're doing a lot with the technology piece we're under that budget from past years but we are doing things with our esser funds again to move certain projects like new line interactive boards and some other things forward at a much faster pace so with that i will stop and ask what questions you have i'll say for the esser funds is that like acquiring long-term tangible items like stuff that is usable going forth into the future stuff that stays with our district i mean absolutely equipment absolutely right and and it also and tracy can address this as well but they're also within that budget are additional things in terms of protecting our schools and our students with food service with custodians it's a balance of things that you can do with it personal protective supplies there's a variety of things that fit to within that criteria technology is just one piece of that that we're looking to utilize those funds for and kind of connecting with that again we want to try we would like to try to expand summer services like summer learning academy we'd like to expand and include more kids we need staff to step up and to be able to pull those duties those positions if they're interested and then they would be able to you know again receive some extra pay over the summer months and we can meet some kids as needs that if they need to you know just work on some different things over the summer to get uh if there's any learning loss so that's the esser funds really do focus on that summer piece for education of kids as well as the technology piece the long-term piece as well any other questions for doug from technology report mike or selena no okay moving on to transportation and kind of just coincidentally i i don't know if you've met brad griffin brad is in the audience right here he was in for samuel uh his son for sam to be here tonight for the wrestling uh i just want to welcome brad with you guys here uh again he's just done a tremendous job getting up to speed in so many different areas uh with grounds and transportation i told him i think i mentioned it's kind of like drinking you know water from a fire hydrant you know sometimes when you start a new job in the middle of the year there's so many things that you need to get right to speed on he's done a terrific job and um so anyway brad is right there so thank you brad for joining us tonight and yeah in your report so i appreciate that you provided a report i said that tough craig and also i appreciate that you are doing safety meetings with your staff great job okay any other comments for questions about transportation okay we'll move on to everyone's favorite superintendent's report thank you so two quick things i received four and then kind of tying with what doug mentioned there were four different people from silver lake who approached me at friday night's games i happened to be pulling supervision duty at the second game of the doubleheader they came and personally talked to me about that that letter that doug read and that was just that they kind of made goosebumps to feel like our our students were just that quality that high quality that came over and uh on another positive note they said our facilities here are just absolutely tremendous they wish they had you know all facilities like that in there in silver lake um i want to reference uh doug and uh craig coolman and courtney finlayson for their work on that technology report they have they have been very aggressive with wanting to try to get the best and the and the most current technology in the hands of our students and staff so they can teach kids better and the students can learn better and so again thank you for your work on on that technology um not only report but the action of that report which will be busy so another busy summer so anyway um at our staff linkage tonight we did discuss the online learning beyond you know the on-site learning as that being the option next year for us here and that's our focus we feel like administrators i i charge them with talking with our staff to see again what their thoughts were and you heard that tonight from our staff during the linkage it's very tough it's very challenging to do the remote learning piece and barring anything changing as far as the health piece that's the direction that our administrative team would like to go to now there can be an exception to that let's say come august if there's a student or two exception i mean we make we'll have that be dealt with with the administrators at each of their buildings but our goal is to have kids on site working with our excellent staff in our excellent facilities and moving forward that way i don't know administrators directors if you have anything else to add to that so so for a health issue for example uh mr eda would be somebody who would like qualify for a 504 plan or something like that if that's what that decision is but that would that would be one of those items and maybe it's a single class that they wanted in or something of that nature but it's not going to be at least in my mind it's not that person that says hey my child is we've got to go on vacation for the week can i while they're gone can they be online or didn't they only get online for one or two the same way with sickness as well we've got those that would do be involved in that as well i think there needs to be some kind of information like doctor's notes and things like that that is relevant for that situation to occur do you have any questions or other comments in regards to how we move forward because we do want to share this with with the community as we are preparing for next year that this this is our plan again barring any major changes or major issues i don't know i would i would say that it's good to get out to the community what our plan is for the fall in our circumstances now and how we see things moving options are going to be available if things change that'd be correct we didn't know last february what was going to happen last march going forward we see what the direction things are on-site learning's going to be the option and you know that may change but they may not i think that's a good message for that okay all right thank you for that support again i want to i want to recognize the high school students that were here tonight and and just the professional the young adult um the way that they handled this uh this this time here in front of us so thank you very good job to all of you we have been constantly monitoring all year long health issues and we've done it with our students we've done it with our staff and i shared this with the board on my weekly emails to them and our administrators and directors and our front office staff nurses secretaries office assistants central office people as well you know that we've had monitoring and dealing with so many different things and so as we were moving forward and progressing with this year uh we started to see obviously at this point in time around spring break that things were working you know looking pretty good for us as far as the health in our community our attendance rate our absence rate actually this has been one of the best if not the best year for absences in our district um in consulting with lori herman and our health department staff and i think a lot of it has to do with all the measures that we are putting in place and and we're just we're trying to do everything we can to make sure we have on-site learning the whole year as well as have our kids get a complete year and all the activities that they want to be involved with so with that being said as time was going on and spring break hit i felt like we needed to see for the first week to two weeks after spring break how we were going to come back after spring break hopeful that we would not spike health issues in regards to covet senate bill 40 did come up which i shared with you some information on senate bill 40.
