oh thank you this is linda again and i appreciate you letting me speak again and the reason i wanted to speak again is because um the previous speaker talked about issues and communicating with you i was able to find um well i know council member briggs's email and i was able to find toms and heather's so i was able to communicate via email but um i want to reiterate my suggestion tom thank you mr crawford for letting us know that you know we can we as individual citizens are free to communicate directly with anybody on the council of the commons that's important that we all realize that we don't have to go through heather although i think it's a good idea to copy her so she knows what's going on but to facilitate our communicating with the members of the council of the commons it would be really great if you guys could send up a set up a group email address like pac and planning commission all the commissions have a group email which makes it very very easy for us ordinary citizens to communicate with all of you so i know it's easy to do it's just probably something you know that you didn't think of so i i really hope that you'll do that to make it easier um for the public to communicate with you thank you well that's just something that i need to set up through it and just so everybody's aware that email anything that goes through that email would actually come to me and then i would print out or make pdfs of the communication that comes through that email and put it in the packet for the meeting so that that's when you'd be seeing those emails coming through all right any other uh public comment then um i think that's it the person with the number 464 has their hands raised but i think you just spoke did you have anything else that you wanted to add whether that was me and i spoke again thank you okay all right then i think that's it okay very good uh with that then can i get a motion uh for adjournment we'll move all right second second all right sounds good all in favor say hi yay hi hi we're getting close to the 9 30 or the 9 o'clock mark thanks everyone good job thank you good work tonight everybody god

um so um that should be a good opportunity for a lot of people in our community to get the vaccine if you haven't yet especially young people who haven't had the chance yet um now i just have a lot of updates for different events that are happening uh towards the end of the year uh next week is the chs cast film festival it's next tuesday or may 11th and it's at 8 p.m and it goes till 10 pm so 8 to 10 pm it's on the upper field at chs and if you don't know where that is it's in between the tennis courts and the soccer soccer and lacrosse field some people know it as the band practice field admission is nine dollars and tickets are sold at the door uh you cannot order them online they are only sold at the door and it's nine dollars and those nine dollars from each person goes towards grants awarded by the clifton education foundation for special projects that benefit clifton public schools so not only are you getting to watch all of these amazing films but you're also supporting clifton schools so it's a massive win-win so there's no reason why you should uh doubt that going isn't worth it it's going to be a great experience there's going to be a lot of films in the film festival i believe it's like somewhere around 25 plus films um in the span of two hours um and yeah it should be a great experience and it's also a good way to support the clifton education foundation uh water and snacks will be sold at the band field uh you do have to bring your own long chairs and blankets but snacks and water will be sold at the field uh the everyone must follow the updated coveted restrictions when they're attending this event so keeping a safe distance between different groups and wearing a mask whenever possible so yeah next tuesday may 11th eight o'clock to 10 o'clock the chs cast film festival um all the students put a lot of work into it it's going to be a lot of fun and i would definitely recommend going next uh group i want to shout out is the clifton mustang band i just uploaded the all city video so usually we have an all-city concert every year and of course we couldn't have an in personal city concert this year but there was still people selected from the elementary schools and the middle schools to participate in all city band and what we did is there's a great video that was posted on the chs mustang band youtube channel if you type in chs mustang band on youtube it should pop up and it's the newest video called clifton all city band 2021 uh william tell overture most you probably know that piece of classical music is an iconic song and what we did is it's a really awesome combination between best musicians in the elementary school middle schools in high school and it's almost like an evolution sort of thing so you start out with the elementary schoolers and they're playing the beginning of the song then you go into the middle school then you go into the older grades in the middle school and then the high school and then at the end we're all playing together for a little bit and it's really awesome um so it's a great video that um a lot of effort went into it across all of the different grades and i would definitely recommend checking it out at the chs mustang band youtube channel um next a group i want to shout out is uh if you guys don't know there is going to be a musical it's not necessarily a spring musical anymore it's more of a summer musical actually it's like the i think it still takes place in the spring i'm not sure but it's june 11th 12th and 13th it's the chs musical review so it's not one set musical like a specific plot or anything it's just a bunch of different songs from different musicals that we combined into this really awesome performance um we're actually in the process of rehearsing we're rehearsing like a few days a week and we're also making videos as a backup just in case we don't get to perform it live but chances are we will get to perform it live and the dates for those for the those performances are june 11th 12th and 13th so that's another thing to look forward to um and also uh just in case i say this every meeting but i always want to update on sat testing for those who don't know uh the next date for sat testing is this saturday i'm sure the registration is probably already filled up but there's another one on june 5th spaces may or may not still be available at chs so i would recommend trying to get on that june 5th sat date as soon as possible um and those are all my updates for tonight i'm really happy that the referendum passed um and i'm really glad i got to be a part of the committee that was that did such a good job promoting it i i was also happy because i got to vote for the referendum myself since i'm finally 18 and it was pretty surreal getting to vote for the first time i it was it was pretty awesome you know i would always go in there as a kid and i would be like bye daddy and he'd go in the booth and he'd vote and i would just be outside wondering or maybe i think they would let me go inside but i always wanted to vote myself i was like i want to touch the machine but and now i get to do it i get to i get to touch the button and vote so yay that's awesome and i was one of the 3 000 plus votes or whatever the number was that passed it so yeah great news for clifton i can't wait to see um when i pick my brother up from school in a few years from now to see what the schools look like because i'm probably it's probably going to look astonishing compared to what it looks like now and that's all because of the um the support that we got from the community so thank you and that's all i have for today um it's a great day to be a mustang max as as as always thank you very much and uh um we can't begin to thank uh you and uh so many other students that were part of the referendum committee that worked so hard in being part of this and as you said so many of you may not even be here to uh witness it but i hope you'll come back in and see it uh come to uh realization but uh he did a tremendous amount of work you and so many other uh students that were on the committee and behind the scenes and getting out the vote in your morning announcements and um and then just to hear the thrill of being able to vote um it just just means so much and uh we really appreciate all you didn't know [Music] what he did to get the students out vote and to get the information out to the public uh was so important for me from a student's perspective uh so i know that was still very important so we thank you tremendously i thank you uh for all that you did next thank you i appreciate that okay so now we'll move on to our immigration it's fortunately open to the residents and the non-residents of clinton for the purpose of addressing any subject matter pertinent to and are direct related to the operation of the public school district residents to non-residents are requested if in person to sign the register provided for the purpose all speakers are asked to state their names municipality and subject matter before speaking comments are limited to five minutes per person you're welcome first up is lori la llama my iron is lagging a little bit so i'm gonna start over again okay uh the public portion is open to uh and non-residents of the city of clifton if you would please state your name municipality and subject matter before speaking comments are limited to five minutes per person issues raised by member of the public may or may not be responded by the board all comments will be considered and a response will be foreign when appropriate your questions i don't think i could finish quite comments regarding students and employees of the world discouraged and will not be responded to by the board students and employees have a specific legal rights afforded by the lawyers in new jersey the board there's no responsibility nor be liable for any comments made by members of the public should consider their comments in light of the legal rights of those identified in their comments and being responsible and liable for their comments miss your first up all right good evening to everybody thank you president smith um first it's teacher appreciation week and also the nurse can you hear me your first yes i can hear you thank you uh i want to praise the teachers and the nurses of clifton public schools they could continue to do excellent work with the kids with their kids families with the community and i can't thank them enough and i am proud to be their president i would also like to let mr daley know that the ilearn is run by gulen as you know and i would love to work with you on that because i connected to um quite a few activist groups that are trying to fight against them so if you want to reach out we can talk that would be great all right so i would like to discuss the money that the the district will be receiving from the american rescue plan i was on a zoom call this afternoon with the education law center with david sierra dr linda darling hammond congresswoman watson coleman congressman jamal bowman out of new york and of course marie bliston um we have the opportunity to reimagine the education here in clifton we can't go back to what was considered the status quo or normal there were many ideas that came out of this discussion and i'm going to highlight some of them as a district we need to continue to identify institutional racism and provide training support the staff to become culturally competent because we have so many languages and cultures here in clifton that it would only benefit everybody helping the students their families and our staff with mental health issues due to this difficult year and i know that we have money from sr2 funds so that might be something that we can look at we need to reflect on discipline disciplinary actions if taken regarding the uniqueness or culture of our students regarding hair or accent and eliminate artificial barriers that separate many of the kids reimagi reimagining of education through equity and a holistic approach learning environment must include restorative justice social emotional learning through play which shows cooperation and conflict resolution among others and culturally responsible education it should not just be the three r's from the past anymore the misconception of learning loss is from the testing companies children were learning every day school buildings were closed but classes continued teachers in paris worked harder than ever so we must actively take part collaborating to com create different expectations now for our new students progress and achieve in this new world that we're going through thank you very much thank you miss um [Music] we have mr mark brunswick mr broonsiak the floor is yours how you doing can you hear me mark bruce jackson holly street clifton thank you dr thank you president smith vice president abu drabo dr robert tosie for allowing me to speak tonight i want to commend eric uh eric thomasovich money mike uchi the finance committee including mr daley and miss beltran and everybody who got that budget done a lot of work goes into that and uh i commend them it's a lot of work and they got the job done and it's you know dr roberto was absolutely correct it's extremely rare when you see a reduction rate in the uh tax rate so i want to commend everybody involved in the budget uh outstanding job over there and i i just called in tonight to uh express my disappointment with the education committee not being able to discuss the wednesday you know having parents getting an option to send their kids in on a wednesday and then i hear about the finance committee talking about you know charter schools being being enabled over here i i don't know what the issue is my understanding is charter school gives parents choices if they feel that they're not getting something in within their district that they have a choice you know they get they get uh i don't know a voucher or something like that to go to one of these charter schools do these charter schools have availability of in-person learning on a wednesday it took nine weeks over here for me to ask before somebody thank goodness and thank you very much miss bastard for that for for mentioning what we had to do in order for you to discuss on the education committee and i commend everybody on that education committee for all the special education that they get done for those kids that absolutely need it but there are other kids out there too that are very high risk that they haven't been able to go in person learning on a wednesday only four days a week and even the high school now they're only going pretty much two days a week is my understanding so somebody please correct me if i'm wrong and on april 25th the new york times reported what the leading cause of death by age was for ages 1 through 17 and this group covet not first not second not third in cause of death it is tenth out of everybody you have a greater risk of dying of the of the flu influenza and a greater risk of dying to homicide than you do of covid so what is the risk why don't parents get a choice to have an option to take a risk to send their kids into in-person learning on a wednesday as well it's about what what they know is best for them and that option still isn't available so it's very frustrating to me to a lot of other parents that we don't have that option yet you kick the can down the road to may 18th again is there going to be an uh scheduling issue there too so it's very frustrating when i call in here every three weeks or so i call as frequently as possible this is what i'm asking for this committee it's a perpetual state of fear and we're asking to try to do something to get back to some normalcy over here and some people continuously live in a perpetual state of fear that nothing can ever get normal and it's very sad and it's very upsetting for not only me but for a lot of parents out there thank you for allowing me to speak tonight thank you and god bless america have a good night everybody thank you jack um mr man nails i apologize i can't see the full name but mercedes um is in the waiting room ready to talk okay hi i'm mercedes camacho walsh i'm a parent and i'm also a doctorally prepared family nurse practitioner and i identify with the frustration that we all parents feel about the quality of life of our children and their ability to return to school but i have good news um now the faster vaccine it's expected to be approved by the fda as early as next week for the ages 12 to and it's already approved for ages 16 uh to 18 and up so that pretty much takes care of our high school and for the 5 to 11 year olds the it is anticipated to be approved around september and moderna vaccine is also doing their trials as well as other vaccines such as novabox so we have an opportunity in fact this saturday to vaccinate our teens 16 17 year olds and up this saturday from 10 a.m to 5 p.m and uh where the old pathmark used to be on clifton avenue and paulson avenue is now a shoprite um wines and spirits and we can vaccinate our children there our teens parental consent is required and they will the children cannot be in school right now often because the rate of increasing covet even though we may not see it in the numbers that necessarily affect us immediately they have increased from uh last year the incidence of coveting children was only three percent but because of lack of vaccination in a lot of areas that rate has actually increased to 22.7 percent and approximately five to 600 children have died of covet across our country so um it is a very significant risk considering that passaic county where we reside is am it's among the highest incidence of covet in the state of new jersey but we can do something about it we can vaccinate them and this will get them ready to have a wonderful summer start summer camps start getting tuning for their sats uh get together with other kids play and get back to school so i think that we have a light at the end of the tunnel and we have a way to get it we did get the 5c vaccine we have it in our neighborhood um this saturday it will be repeated again on may 29th because it needs a second dose and at that point anticipating that the pfizer will be fda approved uh their studies already are excellent very good quality uh by that time the uh 12 to 15s can also register so uh we're doing it one at a time i think this is really wonderful news and i want to put a shout out to all the my colleagues nurses the school nurses it's nurses week and we're here to understand your fears frustrations and and we as parents you also share them and yeah our kids need to feel good about their lives they need to socialize but we cannot put them at risk the risk is real uh but on the other hand it can be contained if we um vaccinate so many more of us the virus has no way to catch on to any one of us and uh and we can get our life back the way we want it to be we all want the same thing and thank you very much for allowing me to speak and to um if i can answer any questions i'll be more than happy to thank you miss walsh mr man anyone else nobody else mr smith you're not in motion uploads thank you i want to close the public discussion by vice president second by mr wade okay we'll move on with our agenda moving to uh unfinished business and it was um unfortunate i didn't catch it when i was looking at the calendars and i was looking at diwali another holiday fighting catch uh which is the muslim holiday for the 2023 calendar uh school calendar year it's not on there and i'd like to i guess motion uh nintendo to the calendar to add it for april 21st 2023 through you to the superintendent have a um we'll just have a motion and then we'll have a discussion motion to amend the account or [Music] for the uh to include the uh um holiday on uh april what was the date april 21st [Music] 21st we have a second for discussion second mr wad uh dr roberto thank you uh mr smith uh mr ed drabo and i had been speaking about this and i just want to let the board know it wasn't um a clerical error on our part when when the calendar committee was looking at the calendar the actual holiday um begins at night on a friday so we met we put a school day on that day and after speaking with mr abdrabo he recommended that you know that day really should be a day closed from school i absolutely respect his opinion but i just wanted to let the board know the reason why that was done because the holiday actually starts that evening and the only um my only concern with making any revisions tonight is that it's not just um taking away that day because taking away that day affects the rest of the calendar that means we have to add one somewhere and uh i'd like to take a a little time to look at it so that i can have a revision for the board at our next meeting [Music] yeah so uh as you're taking a look at that the other thing i would like to take a look at is i know that we have now the week before easter and i know that um other other schools usually do that the week after easter so if we did it at that time it'd be in line with all other schools and there would be a lot of functions and things for kids to go to at the time we have all because that's just the standard time that other schools take and i know that if teachers teach out of district um they would have off in clifton one week and be home alone while their kids would be off with the husband or whoever next week so it just doesn't really work out you know so if we could just take a look at that as well no i agree with you mr come over here you're absolutely right on that end um absolutely miss conor we can take a look at that just just so the board knows um it's not something that i i do myself alone in the room we do get feedback from from the faculty from administration and the feedback from the faculty was to to keep it that week but i think what we'll do is [Music] a survey the faculty staff and parents uh that way we could have some real data considering that we have time this is not next year's calendar this is the year after so i'd like to get real data from the from the families to see what they prefer and also from our faculty there is one little wrinkle that um you need to be aware of if we do change that week then we'll have to add another day to the calendar somewhere also because good friday is during that week and that is a state and a national holiday where schools must be closed so that just means we'll have to find another day somewhere doesn't mean that it's not doable it just means we have to find another day somewhere so there's a lot of things that go into the calendar um but i'll have a draft for your review uh perhaps at the next ed committee meeting on may 18th uh we can review it and then have it at the may 20th board meeting or at the latest the june 10th i think we have off that monday anyway at least this year we did unless we did that ad hoc it was a snow give back day oh okay east um we call it easter monday the day after easter yeah was not was not scheduled to be a day off but it was a snow give back day okay um mr robert mr wad will you both pull your emotions yes okay you know re-look this through the uh asian committee and then get back to the full board another time is there any other unfinished business all right seeing none we'll move on to um b uh education administration um we have e a one expression of eh2 teacher appreciation week ea 3 national school national school nurse day ea 4 second reading of policy ea 5 revision of the 2021 school calendar for clifton high school staff and students ea 6 memorandum agreement between the clinton public schools and the first school ea seven member in the agreement to the clinton public schools in ben karat yosef uh a8 a njsia membership e a nine appointment for alternate for the northern regional educational commission okay uh we're gonna take um ea one uh expression of condolences on that gonna take the first three separately motioned by mr daley second i think mr abu drabble first since uh commissioner bathroom secondly [Music] um [Music] mr daily would you like to read that resolution please be my pleasure where i whereas on april 24th 2021 the community noted with sorry uh commissioner uh motion mrs bastford on the second mr daley would you please read the resolution yes do you hear me yes okay good whereas on april 24th 2021 the community noted with sorrow the passing of mr leonard m mahalik and whereas mr mahalik had served the board of education and children of clifton faithfully and considered considerably as commissioner of the board of education mr maholic was a member from 1984 to 1987 where he served as president from 1986 to 1987.

thank you okay uh other questions or comments miss noel are you was that everything or jeff moore or no i i didn't want to cut you off i feel thank you any other questions or comments because i'm going to ask mias a couple questions real quick because i again i want to emphasize something on this we we stated earlier today earlier in this meeting that despite what the vote is we can untie tether the negotiation for the benefits and what goes on there and solve that after the fact correct right correct i just want to hit that point yes then on top of that it was issued a couple of times uh charged at us a few times to vote no on the final budget mr rashinti i have a question for you all right and i hope in no way do i want to put you on any kind of spot here um let's go to that scenario and let's say the final budget fails what happens there because we're we're right along that line of where this has to be turned in so so what would happen is that we'd have to advertise for another public meeting to vote which we'd have to wait at least 48 hours and then we'd have to take another vote it has it has to be submitted to the county office by next friday so any any changes that we make to the budget i have to go into the state software make all those adjustments and have everything done and to the county office by friday okay all right i just need to know that because i wanted that kind of clarification on that thank you um but again to reiterate the point they're they're untethered from each other and i think anish you might have said it best although i probably will butcher this you know basically what we're doing with this budget is we're creating the buckets of sand how we move the sand from bucket the it we can we can do that regardless and that's incredibly true tonight is not the end all be all here we make changes to the budget all the time all right we're just setting the definitive number so what we do here tonight does not emphasize one way or the other what is going to happen i i have said this before and i will say this again there were very positive things that had been happening in the last couple weeks and i'm going to stay on that positive note regardless all right and despite this moment here that's not going to stop okay that is not going to stop there is between us there is a common goal the question is how long is that road going to take and i am hoping not much longer okay so i just want to emphasize that because we have been bouncing stuff off of each other all night long tonight all right but i want that common fact to be there that you know like anishi had said to me earlier and i i'm just gonna use that example one more time all we're doing is setting the buckets of sand up how we move the sand from bucket to bucket how we move the money from place to place what we do and how we fix things we can do that we have that room and ability to do so which is what we have been working on in the last couple weeks all right so i just wanted to throw that back out there again and um is there anybody else who has any more comments or questions pertaining to what we are doing can you can you turn your michael on this no i think you've had it off can we comment before our vote or should we just this this is the comment before the vote oh okay i was not sure okay so i do want to just say a few words as the finance uh committee chair i wanted to of course say thank you to all the finance committee members and our vice president miss everhart for your hard work as many have said tonight we've met weekends late night meetings so many meetings and um with the etea so i want to thank them as well we met with the eta leadership many times as well and i'm glad that they were able to sit down with us and discuss options for this budget um you know it was a big task to try to figure out how to make up this significant deficit um so one question and then a comment my question is if this budget does not pass tonight and well where are the cuts going where's the money going to come from and what has to be cut in the future in order to get the budget to pass like what what is going to happen if that doesn't pass where where's the money coming from that need to support the pass well i think the question mr lanzalata and mr shane again i i i fall back to you on this one is that if the budget fails you can't repass the budget as is we'd have to be changed that's that's a good question i i don't know um i i would think you could still vote on the same budget because you're you know you're voting on the actual dollars of the budget um so i i think you could vote for the sa i mean you could the thing is you could move money from one line item to another another and the total number is still the same yeah so by not passing the budget tonight and you say we want to decide to put something else in the budget and take something else out we do that every month yeah yeah we do that every month through firms we approve that we approve that in every in every finance and operations section every month but i think the question you had mr lanzalata was the idea that does the budget have to have like some kind of metamorphosis if it goes no no what i'm what i'm trying to say is is if we decide tonight to to keep the powers benefits then that money has to be cut somewhere else well nobody's deciding tonight on that you're voting yes or no on this i understand that but what would be the repercussions of that do we know repercussions of what vote question is nothing i understand what he's asking so jeff hypothetically you have three categories of expenses one you don't the top line the revenue the monies coming in are not going to change in the next week so it would mean we had category a category b category c right now say the pair of benefits are in c right now we budgeted half a million dollars less what we would have to do is take the money and cut a cost out of category a category b to up category c because the bottom line of all expenses has to equal the top line of all the inflows so we know the top line and the bottom line so i think what you're asking is what we would need to do we could sit and say electricity is going to go down a half a million dollars pair of benefits are going to go up a half a million dollars but we have to you know it's not going to happen it's not a feasible projection that the electric bill is going to go down by a half a million dollars so john would need to come up with another category in his presentation to their increasing benefit cost and lowering something else and they'd hold this accountable for it we wouldn't get through the county saying the electric is going to go down a half a million dollars because they look at our history and say it's not going to it's not going to fly we have to present a balanced budget so as an anish had said we can manipulate the buckets as things happen there may be some positive things that happen on the top line in the next few months i know we've talked about different things land sale the the clarification on round three of the government surplus okay at that point top line goes up then we can adjust all the categories of the expenses but right now based on the knowledge that we know all we know is how much money is coming in we know what the state aid is going to be we know what the max levy on the tax increases are going to be and who knows what's going to happen in the next few months that we can adjust that we just have to balance this and this have to balance now there's not a lot if it doesn't pass tonight and if you said hell i'm not voting on this unless i see another half a million dollars in in employee benefits then john would have to find he'd have to cut salaries at half a million dollars so that's the problem with that the problem with that jeff is that 85 of our budget is salaries and benefits okay so if you're going to put one benefit back in more than likely you're going to have to remove another salary that's where i was that's what i was was wondering will it come from uh staff other staff i would believe most if not all would come from other staff okay and how how many staff members are we talking about it depends what those positions were okay i mean if it was if it was teacher staff teacher staff members how how many teachers are we talking about uh seven to ten perfect and and that six hundred thousand is half of a year so you know two in other words if we were gonna for a full year it'd be double that right you know so you're looking at around twenty sixteen to twenty sixteen to twenty because you got it with with the seniority and the tenure you'd have to start it's not as though if it was cutting one administrative position and you have somebody at a ten thousand dollar somebody at five you can't just pick ten you'd have to go with five because more than likely they have less tenure so it would be easier if you had a pot of money that you had to eliminate to pick the higher salary people but it's not possible sure you know eliminate the yeah i i totally understand but my my question was geared to i mean if in fact this did happen would it be teacher salaries and how many teachers would get caught and you've told me about close to twenty twenty four people here's another way of looking at it we we've eliminated 45 positions and i don't remember what the chart had shown salaries are down 1.4 million but we have to remember is those that are staying there's a three percent uptick so the differential in that salaries was about 2.8 million dollars representative of 45 people now a lot of them were retirees so we got the the benefit they were on the higher end of the salary spectrum but now when it comes to us eliminating a different positions we would be taking the less tenured people and they would in those positions and assessing which department in which category that would be a whole different discussion and i appreciate everything that you guys are explaining i just i i wanted to make that clear in my mind that you know that it would it would cost staff about 20 teaching salaries 20 additional teaching salaries thank you miss fleming yes um and if i can't answer ask the question then please you'll let me know um when we spoke about the ionizers and paying all that off and i understand that's a loan payment gone if we paid fifty percent of that off instead of a hundred percent of it off what's the pros and cons to that obviously i know what khan is that's essential funds and mr richinti can explain that's not for benefits this is the problem this is what you know yeah we we could do that and would it would free up money in our okay and our sr2 grant to be available but it can't be used for benefits and and actually and mrs fleming it's a great idea and we actually intended to do that we fully we intended to use the 111 000 from paying off the ionizer for this year to build more benefits into the budget but what happened was the second open enrollment period for chapter 44 brought in another 150 000 in cost which was even greater than what we saved by paying off the ionizers so any other questions or comments all right seeing none let's go to a roll call please mrs capala yes this is everhart mr fizzy frisicaro yes miss fleming yes mr catherine yes mrs noll [Applause] no yes wait a second mr megan yes this is ryan wait wait yeah i i just listen all i um i you're entitled to vote however you wish which but you made the motion you have to you made the motion normally when you make the motion in under robert's rules of procedure that's we do the second you don't have to vote for it but when you make demotion it generally says i support the board taking this action specifically to prevent people from making motions that they want to fail so um um that's a great question okay um let's see this make this meeting more complex uh i would suggest in my opinion if your anticipation is that you would vote no i would declare this to be a non-vote that's my recommendation that the minister reflect that have you withdraw your motion and have the chair entertain emotion from somebody else okay um i'm sorry i didn't read robert's rules book no we just we've brought into this before and with the board of education been here a number of years and we've had a number of votes that went um if if interesting and correct me if i'm wrong mr donio in terms of how we're doing this because it's actually been a while since we went back to this again um so miss miss noel if you do wish to vote no all right you would have to retract she would have to retract her with all her motion yeah before the votes count yeah withdraw the motion so can she do that now uh i would suggest that she could do that now if the vote i would rather that she be allowed to do that you're the chair you can rule on this but i'd rather should be allowed to withdraw and not vote no on emotion that she's made because we've had that experience in the past i concur with that that idea i encourage that decision so what we'll do here is is this is this miss null you can withdraw your motion and then allow another board member who wants to vote yes make the motion and then we can second again okay is that something you wish to do okay i wish to withdraw my motion for item 4.1 item 4.1 correct yes the second does it the second need to agree to that no uh normal ms cappella made the second do you do you agree with that all right we're we're good okay all right so then what we're going to do is we're going to entertain a res a motion for resolution 4.1 to approve the adoption of the 2021-2022 school budget do i have a motion motion by miss capello second it executed my mr megan okay we're good on questions comments right cause i'm gonna move past that we've we've debated this thing to death all right let's uh let's go to a roll call please mrs capella yes mrs everhart yes mr zacchara yes miss fleming it's the same same vote different motion please don't do that [Applause] [Music] now mr canton yes this is null what no mr lanzalata yes mr megan yes this is ryan yes motion passes okay all right moving into 5.1 all right this meeting will now be open to the public referencing any items of interest however your questions or comments pertain to litigation student or personal items or negotiations we'd ask you see the superintendent after the meeting since we do not discuss those in public please limit your comments to three minutes per person is there anyone who wish to speak same rules apply as for per the the first round thank you for nothing 20 years seeing none i will close that portion of the meeting at this point i need a motion for adjournment motion by miss ryan seconded by mr hansen all in favor aye [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] you

okay can you hear me okay yeah okay okay everyone um thank you uh that we are back from break uh we are at 5.02 approval of pay schedule changes uh for fiscal year 2021 2022 anita pyatt uh this is one that uh we pulled from the consent agenda uh for discussion um are there board members that would like to discuss this or uh superintendent you have your video opened would you like to say uh any comments in addition to what you may have said already in the superintendent's report no i have no additional comments um i'm just open for any board feedback at this point okay are there board members who'd like to take discussion on this or ask the superintendent questions pv i do have a question um i'm curious for um the board or perhaps for superintendent reichman with um additional discussion and consideration with 5.02 i'm wondering what the best procedure or course of action would be if we need more time to review data and the analysis we discussed and perhaps bring this back at the next board meeting or if with some guidance we should make a decision at this point so i'm wondering how the board is feeling about this uh there's no other board member uh comments right now i think uh pv that's a great question uh you know my opinion on this is you know these pay schedule changes were made in an effort to reduce the uh the reliance on stipends and duty pay uh that produce or what the superintendent believes produces in equitable results in salaries across the agency uh that's that's her position uh unfortunately with respect to some of these changes that we were asked to make today uh the the commensurate or the associated uh study or assessment of those individuals the jobs that they performed the job descriptions for those positions uh and their uh paid grades and classifications uh hasn't been done uh and as we understand it um once that assessment's been done their pay grade may change uh or or it may not but but it's got to be determined on a case-by-case basis uh and i think that before we were to do something like this at least in my opinion that we should do that that second piece of the work uh that we have to look at these the individuals that are going to be affected by it make some kind of recommendation as to whether any changes uh regarding their overall pay or grade or job description or job title uh should be made based on the work that they do and the work that they've done and bring that to the board and again that may result in pay you know decreases in some cases it may result in pay increases i suppose it could it could result in uh a net even result and and i suspect that that case may be different um depending on the situation you know but at least for me and i i think we should take no action here um and to the extent that we do eliminate the stipends uh we do it after the full assessment's been made for all the individuals affected and those individuals have a much better idea of where they're going to be at the end of this process uh it's you know again the board can think about the roles that the stipends uh play as a kind of an overlay um to to allow for extra pay for certain scenarios but i could see superintendents uh reichmann's position that that they may lead to an inequitable result at some point so you know that overall motivation you know may be good but we really need to do a better job of making sure we know the effects and who it's going to affect and how it's going to affect them and communicate that and to them effectively uh before you know before we take action so uh you know my position is let's let's do that work take no action now uh and and have the administration come back to us uh with a complete you know package of changes you know with with respect to these individuals that were being affected it looks like around 30 individuals to be affected by this so i see a few people um uh you know if we can go uh maybe lynn first and then we can go uh to sue kay and linda and mike i agree david linda said i was actually here first are you there first i pretended i or president niagara i apologize i i popped up first and i would like to be recognized first oh okay i i i didn't notice that so i'll go go ahead linda okay yeah i did um try to get some attention um but without interrupting your discussion but um i would like to to add some input from my end as well um regardless of who is hearing or deaf i would appreciate that you recognize um the board member who comes on first and i um i am speaking in front of the board to just recognize the fact that when i've popped up a couple of times now i was not recognized equitably with other board members so i'd like to put that on record and um i hope that i do understand your opinion president nigro and i agree with most of what you just said i too would like to know more about what those changes will be and how they will impact staff before we make a vote on eliminating the stipend one of the things that concerns me is some of our staff or our teachers may lose motivation to stay we may lose some of our retention if we're not acknowledging and compensating them for their expertise so i would like to have some further information like president nigro said about how this is going to impact staff and hold this vote until a later meeting um and superintendent rickman how much time do you think you need would we be able to have this at the next board meeting that would be my next question for you superintendent reichman this is superintendent regman we i believe we can have that um information ready at the next board meeting in in july on july 22nd um we're not talking about very many staff um the proposal regarding the stipend and the additional duty pay um is maybe 30 staff members all together so we can take a look at each one of those individuals and then come back to the board with more information and more a more detailed proposal so again um the goal here um is to standardized standardize and create a more equitable pay system um and we want to stop the individualized um situations where people are going around the system and getting additional pay when it's determined that the salary itself is not sufficient what we would like to do is set a salary that in and of itself is fair and is equivalent to that individual's responsibilities and expertise that they're offering to the students and to the agency so that's the goal of this proposal so the question then is how we're able to do that most effectively that's the question that internally asdb has been running with and trying to figure out exactly how can we do that how can we address this differentiated pay and these supplemental pay systems that we have that seem to really be individualized and really on a case-by-case basis we need to become more standardized and consistent and more equitable linda singh thank you okay lynn i think you are next uh well i'll get a turn i'm sure um i agree i think we really need to look at how it's going to affect individuals and i'd like to see i know that there are um inequalities even between the campuses what's happening on tucson it's not happening at phoenix is not happening in the um the co-op so i would i would really like to see us standardize that and um and make sure at the same time making sure everyone is treated fairly sue k take it away i would support pretty much everything that is being said at this point and i just would like to reiterate that for those people receiving extra duty pay and stipend pay we are not looking at the cost of living increase um as a way of just replacing that that we're making sure their cost of living increase is equitable based on the pay that they are currently getting thank you sue king tv thank you i would like to again um hone in on that concept of giving giving superintendent um annette reichman the opportunity to create equity within the agency and i agree with her determination regarding this system and i would support her decision to create a more equitable system being that only 30 staff are impacted it does seem like a small number but at the same time i think it's important we recognize that these are specialized areas and it is a challenge we need to ensure that we are thorough in determining the value of these specialized areas and making sure that they are supported and that their pay is fair at the same time we want an overall on the whole equitable system i think that it would be wise for the board um to allow superintendent reichman the opportunity to do a little bit more analysis and determine what the best approach might be um and bring that back to the board and then if we are we don't like that or we don't we're not satisfied with that we think there should be a different approach we can have that conversation about a different approach but superintendent reichman um i with your comments do you have any comments or questions on the approach to this particular topic is the superintendent reikmann no i can see that the board obviously wants more information and i'm happy to provide that information if you just give us a little bit of time we will also do a more in-depth review and we will become more prepared with additional information for the board at the next meeting pbe saying great thank you superintendent raymond i think that from the view of fairness it would be a great idea to re-address this at the july board meeting and have some additional answers to questions before this the school year starts in the fall if at all possible okay mike thank you david um having worked with shanna cooper over the last maybe i don't know three or four years maybe a little longer i've noticed how how keen of a mind she has financially and if she's been charged with the task to be able to put this project together and i also trust her in her ability to recognize cost savings as being necessary particularly with a 80 to 85 percent administrative um payroll and ere cost to the agency so um i'm sure with with uh the opportunity to to flesh this out and uh to really uh with a deeper dive as they say uh she'll be able to come up with very good uh solutions or uh or agendas to to strategize uh how how to get this done and if not just directly around that and i understand over time too that these inequities can just develop and you don't quite understand why there's different pay i didn't quite under also understand a bit about some people are coming around the system to uh to increase their their pay while others aren't so that's that seems like that's a whole different issue that uh is more than just necessarily cost savings but uh but like i said uh not to reiterate any more that's obviously been done here uh i trust uh shayna's abilities uh immensely so and it's been a pleasure so i'm sure i have confidence that she'll be able to to uh give us uh exactly what we're looking for uh great are there other speakers on this issue uh phoebe i would just like to um say mike well said i agree shayna's um expertise um are outstanding and even just in the short time that i've been on the board with my time as well prior to that observing her work um she has been an outstanding benefit to this agency she was an excellent hire and i support her promotion as well so um if nothing else kudos to superintendent reichman for that hire if an action item is required on this do we then need to make a motion to table this issue until the next board meeting no so i'd like to take the opportunity to make that motion uh no we don't need to take any any action um action item just means that we we can take action um and if we do take action we have to list it as an action on the agenda uh at least 24 hours before the meeting although we you know we tend to post it the friday before so about six days before um so we don't need to we're not required to take an action so we can simply pass on to the next uh the next item uh and you know without approving this uh is there and again if there any other comments i'll get ready to move all right on the next next item is 5.03 approval of proposed salary increases uh for fiscal year 2122 uh superintendent reichman on this one um i believe the pv had would like to recuse himself is there any uh other discussion that would like to be had before uh there's a motion i i think i see pb raising his hand so so pv yes i would um like to recuse myself from any discussion regarding this issue okay um is there any other board members that would like to talk about this before uh sue kane i was going i was getting ready to make a motion to go ahead yeah okay uh so so you can go ahead with that okay um i move that we approve um agenda item 5.03 approval of proposed salary increases for fiscal year 2021 to 2022.

family i would also like to thank the citizens of clifton all those who came out and voted we are moving in the right direction you know for our future uh i would like to applaud superintendent and his entire staff and everybody in between that worked extremely extremely extremely hard uh to get this done uh you know the hard work and the effort that was put into this referendum really has shown hopefully you know in the near future once we get to finally see the results and as the public will be seeing you know all the great things all the renovations happening to our schools that have been badly needed it that our students our teachers our staff will be able to thrive in such you know a wonderful environment also uh for the teachers i know it's the appreciation week for me i don't feel like you guys deserve a week it should be a daily thing you guys are really really heroes there's always a saying that i always used to uh my mom is always telling me not all heroes wear capes you guys are those heroes um also to just finish off you know as you know the month of ramadan is finishing off you know this month specifically for you know my community and myself it's a time of uh self-reflection you know a lot of people think ramadan is just a fasting no food no water from dawn to sunset that is just part of the fast but it is a month where you can self-reflect and kind of take a step back you know uh after a hectic year and you know you tend to appreciate you know the people around you you appreciate your community your family and most importantly having good health you know as the pandemic is you know still around i would love to remind everybody you know just don't let your guards down even though there are we're doing great with the vaccinations we're almost there almost to the finish line i know the entire staff in this district with superintendent everybody on the board you know our biggest goal is to get all these students back but at the same time we have to assure and work with the you know the doctors and scientists especially our health officials to make sure that it's a hundred percent safe without risking anybody's uh safety and hopefully you know we are nearing to that and uh like i always said you know i hopefully us as a board we get to go back in person meetings because you know i feel like we should always lead by example we do have a little technical difficulties we had in the high school and hopefully we're able to figure out that situation soon and i wish everybody a blessed night and thank you very much thank you mister miss bassford yes condolences to the malik family uh thank you for your service uh to the family as well because uh when you become a board member you're not only do you serve but your family gives up a great things um happy birthday to miss danny i just want to remind you that on april 4th 10 years ago we both started this journey and got sworn in on 2011.

and do we have a second for that uh lin okay one second um all in favor and any and then any opposed and we have one recusal okay great uh thank you very much uh we can go on now to 7.01 information discussion item lea update maria murphy ms murphy good evening board president nigro superintendent reichman dr rex members of the board for the record my name is maria murphy director of policy and government relations you all have been receiving hopefully the updates regarding house bill 2863 otherwise known as the lea bill the latest information that i have is as you all are probably aware um the prime sponsor representative udall uh refused to concur in the senate amendments after it passed out of the house and um members were named to the conference committee however as of this morning and speaking to representative udall she has changed her mind and decided to concur with the senate amendments and so we are expecting now that what will happen is that the bill will go to a final read over at the house of representatives and then go over to the governor's desk hopefully for signature so uh at this time i am getting in touch with um leadership as well as house staff to hopefully get the bill calendared within the next week or two for a third so does anybody have any questions for me at this time maria could you um explain what uh the amendments were certainly um so yes thank you board president nigro um board president uh board member davidson so essentially what the um amendment did was it created um what's called session law which means that for the next school year uh asdb is being definitively determined to be the district of responsibility and the lea for pupils who are being served in phoenix and in tucson and specifically denoting that asdb will be responsible for providing faith the free and appropriate public education so um this is session language that is good for the year in order for us to continue those conversations with ade and iron out any details so that we can go ahead and put all of those issues to rest but the underlying bill remains the same but this is basically making it very very specific that we are the district of the of responsibility and that we are the ones who are responsible for providing faith when the local school districts refer a child or the iep team refers a child to phoenix or tucson thank you you're welcome hi this is linda hello maria hi linda a question for you sure what is the purpose for having the ade involved with the board and whoever it is that you're coming together to discuss um this is something that we will be being recognized as the lea but what is the other further discussions what's the core content for these uh discussions is there any uh agenda for that do you have any information on that thank you you're welcome and it's a great question um so essentially there are a lot of um issues that uh would need to be ironed out um so specifically we know that transportation and specifically who would be responsible for the transportation of some of these campus-based students that's an outstanding issue there's um but those those are going to be discussed in what's called the interim so after the legislature signee dies or adjourns for the year we are going to be having those ongoing discussions to iron out issues such as transportation accountability things of that nature so that we are all on the same page and very clear about who is responsible for what and we view ade as an integral partner in those conversations so because they are the ones who are responsible for education statewide erin i see you have a question so pop on in uh thank you very much uh president anger members of the board uh maria and just to maybe dovetail a little bit with maria from the agency's perspective looking forward to that work over the interim and the the session law piece really creating that bridge while underlying statutes are worked on so if the agency wants to move into the lea that all of the accompanying underlying statutes that tie in with issues around enrollment are reflective of those processes thank you aaron you said it much better than i did are there any other questions for miss murphy uh i guess uh can you explain the uh the origin of that amendment the amendment that does it only be session law yes as so um board president nico it was um that actually came out of um discussions and stakeholder meetings um and it it was felt that this would definitively say who is responsible for what for the for the time being for the year to sort of as aaron said provide the bridge to get to those particular solutions but a way of definitively stating asd is considered the lea asdv is considered the district of responsibility asdb is responsible for faith the free and appropriate public education so this particular language arose out of a stakeholder meeting where the lease the ade and asdb all met to discuss some of these outstanding issues and this was the language that everybody sort of agreed to and so that we could move the legislation forward but at the same time acknowledge that we still have issues that need to be worked on and by year you mean the rest of the calendar year or through next school year so 21 22 which would end yes so june 30th or 2022.

uh so here we are now 10 years fast forward so i want to i want to say something to all the moms so i have a little poem uh every person every person born on earth comes by way of a mother the monumental task of mothering is a job unlike any other with or without a college degree suddenly we become teachers showing the dis the difference between right and wrong sometimes make us sound like preachers being a mother is a do it yourself project where we have to use what we know apply the knowledge one step at a time as a mother and child both grow we become excellent listeners at first for each movement and sound then to hear what they going into when they learn how to move around listening takes new senses as children start to grow we become aware of expressions and feelings they want us to know we learn to listen between the words to the breaths and the body talks we let to the language seen within their eyes the way they stand or the way they walk mothers heel cuts and bruises shelter children from each storm support them through all thick and thin provide hugs that feel safe and warm mothers are totally amazing they are instincts that know exactly what is going on as they watch their children grow thank god for our children who they are and who are yet to be thanked for bestowing this honor of motherhood so lovingly to all the mothers in clifton in our district and on the zoom happiest mother's day miss you mom thank you miss basford uh miss beltran okay i'll keep this short um thank you to everyone uh for dealing with us tonight with all of our technical difficulties i hope that the next meeting will be in person so maybe we won't have so many um issues with the the stream um i'd also like to take a moment to recognize that i'm glad that um so many of our students are back into the classroom and are returning to school um with uh either four days in the classroom or two days in the classroom any part that's in the classroom i truly believe is what's the best interest of our children and hopefully in the fall we'll be able to go full uh fledged the only issue being the lunches but hopefully we'll be able to figure that out um for all the muslim residents of clifton i'd like to wish you an early eid mubarak because i don't think we have a meeting before our um that happens i also like those a happy mother's day to all the mothers out there of both uh children and fur children because i'm a mother but i'm just a fur child not a skin child as i like to be called and i hope everyone has a good night thank you thank you miss beltran mr kenova good evening everyone uh first of all thank you to our speakers happy mother's day to all the mothers out there um and happy birthday to our own uh lucy tonight on your birthday thank you to our teachers and nurses um it's it's without without you we couldn't do what we do here in clifton um and and it's uh is our our right to to teach our children accordingly uh and and you help us do that and and anytime they get hurt and anytime they're they're in need of services the nurses are there for them making sure that uh you know they're well taken care of so thank you for your support um and the only thing another thing i'll speak on is is uh the referendum so i'm ecstatic that this referendum passed as as danny mentioned earlier it was a two to one vote which means more than 66 percent um in robert's rule of voters that's a two-thirds vote which is great that means that that we're in touch with reality of the city the town came out and spoke and they told us yes we like exactly what you're doing here and we want to move forward with it um and i always say people people could talk a good game but they only put their money behind things that they really believe in and i truly believe that the taxpayers here believe in our children and believe in our district and we're not going to let you down so i really thank you for that from the bottom of my heart that's all thank you thank you mr canova mr daly thank you mr president um first of all i'd like to thank our speakers tonight that was uh max rubin laurie lalama mr brunsiak and dr camacho walsh uh for their participation and comments also i'd like to extend our condole my personal condolences to the maha family uh i did not know leonard but i knew i was close with other members of the mahalik family uh so they're long been a great name in the city of clifton um also like to give my best best wishes for all the mothers on mother's day um my mother is long past but she's still a big part of my life and as i'm sure all sons and daughters are for their mothers whether they're here or not um and again i thank the uh congratulations to the teachers and their notificati and their honorarium for teachers day and also the nurses uh to miss danny on her birthday um there's going to become a time where you're going to not want to go really say that your birthday but we still have birthdays and they are to be celebrated no matter what age you are and lastly on the referendum um i'm a lifelong clifton resident and it was always said in clifton that in nothing would ever pass if you ask the public to do something um we went big we went large on this we did a great job of doing our best to explain it and we got a two-to-one vote so all the people that participated in the voting no matter if you voted for or against it but you were part of a statewide historic vote not only did it pass two to one but it was the largest bond referendum ever passed in any municipality in the state of new jersey it shows a lot about our our city here it shows that with the proper leadership and the proper projects the citizens will embrace the projects and will give you their support that's so important to building a great community we have a great one it's only going to get better this is uh historic on many levels it shows that the citizens of this town really care uh not just for appropriating money which was part of your job and voting for this but understanding the nature of what we're spending it on and how it is so important not only to the school system but really to the future of this town um a lot of people complain there's no vision there's in a lot of sectors of a political life in the united states and other places but particularly in towns and and in the country and i think vision a real vision is important to our democracy and our way of life uh you have to it's our responsibility as elected officials and leaders in leadership positions to give a solid vision of what we can be and i think that was in full uh view here and i think that's one of the reasons why it passed by such a great margin congratulations to everyone and thank you to everyone who lended a hand and did whatever part they could in getting the support for this referendum it's truly historic thank you mr daley and to our birthday girl miss annie okay hold on uh secondary well um first of all thank you um for all of the uh birthday wishes um yes i i still celebrate it's one of those things that i just feel like you know it's your birthday so um and i'm spending it with everyone here um so thank you um thank you to all of the speakers like to send my condolences to the malik family and mother's day is coming so definitely want to say happy mother's day to my mom and all the mothers out there uh and lastly i just want to say you know teacher appreciation week thank you to all the teachers in the district it has you know as an educator i know that it's been a very difficult year um between always wondering are we you know virtual are we you know going to be in are we going to go out um you know altering the lessons um teaching children on the zoom and at the same time in person and just uh an array of things and you know um really just want to say thank you and just hang in there because you know summer's there just a little bit of time for rest and relaxation and thank you as well to the district nurses because you know it was really difficult on them as well with contact tracing and everything so thank you very much and that's all i have to say thank you mr danny and vice president alvarez thanks president smith um happy birthday to our birthday girl it's your 21st birthday today whoo uh i mean 40 50 years to come um you know i find it interesting that a year ago at the beginning of this pandemic teachers were at the forefront teachers were considered heroes teachers are considered this considered that you know we don't know what they go through knowing for the past five six months i've heard teachers don't want to teach and you know i find that very difficult to swallow and to say because teachers do want to teach you know there's something i learned from i heard from somebody and i reposted on my where my facebook which was teachers don't prepare for the incoming students they prepare are they prepare for the results of the outcome so you know while you bring a student to your class beginning the school year who is raw who's a novice and that in in math and science in that grade level they've learned if they learn one thing that means you got through to them and i know our teachers are hard at work i know our teachers care very much i know we have a lot of teachers who grew up in this district that went to school in this district and their passion of a mustang really bleeds right through and you know there's no doubt in my mind that they do believe maroon as a mustang you know so i want to thank you from the bottom of my heart um you know for somebody who went to school in this district and hopefully will continue to serve this district by get by paying it forward um to our nurses thank you for all you do it's not easy i've gotten calls from from my kids schools saying hey did you fill out the fours but because we just tend to forget you know that's not what a nurse should have to do every morning just to remember about forms about covert forms be filled out and surveys but they do it anyway not because it needs to get done but because they believe that it needs to get done and putting yourselves in that daily routine and remembering um and as well as the the covid the cobit layout over at the high school uh with with the vaccine you know it's i i really do thank you i mean our teachers and nurses have always been the backbone of our education uh throughout this country and hopefully they continue to be in better circumstances um i'm repeating everything else repeated but this last part um is very dear that's why i left it last so happy mother's day to all there's one thing i remember um that my father taught me when i was younger you know when they ask you who's your favorite parent your mother or your father in the muslim religion it's always your mother your mother your mother then your father that's how that's how much your mother is should be raised above on a pedestal and also that heaven beneath heaven lies beneath the mother's feet so if your mother at the end of the day when it's your time to go front of god is not happy with you that's a problem so your mother gets a voucher for you and i don't know anywhere and you know from my perspective that you're forgiven if your mother vouches for you right it's usually your mother could takes you under the wing she takes care of you you know she'll she'll protect you so do whatever but the fact that mothers are raised on that level it's just a reminder that you know speaking back to your mother's remembering your mother's taking advantage of them of your mother's being here and we don't want to we don't want to remember somebody or something while when we don't have them anymore it's very very important so i'm getting a little emotional because it's just my mother and like everybody else means so much so uh and that's something i try to instill into my kids um and if there's something i you know i'm gonna no disrespect to our parents and their to our teachers and our nurses i'm i'm i'm on the mother's things to me that's very very very important and you know it's it's it's something that we should remember at all times especially when our mothers talk to us and we don't agree with with our mother what our mother say but at the end of the day you gotta just let it go because you don't want any last resort you don't want any last um harboring feelings between a mother and a child and god forbid you don't know how long we're gonna be on this earth so thank you very much mr smith and thank you to our administrators our superintendent danny again great job on the on the referendum teachers everybody in the district um were walking advertisement for for the referendum no matter where i went like i'm a teacher and i never really never told my board member or i don't if they knew but but they would talk to me by themselves and i i just acted as i knew nothing about the referendum and they were just walking advertisements walking advocates for the referendum and it really did show from that two to one uh outcome of of the referendum vote so danny my hat's off to you of course my colleagues on the board our district uh employees and thank you to the city of clifton honestly thank you thank you thank you very much thanks president smith thank you very much president um teacher appreciation mr you couldn't have said it any better um there's just not one week uh teachers should be appreciated all year long for all that they do words cannot express um how grateful i am to all that my teachers over my years uh and so many memories of some great teachers and um and i just wish to uh thank all of our clifton teachers for the great job that they do in in educating our clifton kids uh we are so thankful we're so proud of all that you do uh for clifton students and [Music] we appreciate you and our nurses um again i remind everybody our nurses on every wednesday and tomorrow uh they've been volunteering their time in the cold and the wind and snow and the heat volunteering their time to get vaccinations into arms here in the city clifton so we should be uh extra proud of our nurses this year and this week um for all that they do but specifically during this pandemic for the job that they're doing um in volunteering their time and getting these vaccinations we truly appreciate each and every one of you and all the efforts that you put forward and uh our two teachers here on the board uh mr casper and miss danny uh thank you for choosing that profession thank you for your dedication to your kids into your school district and um we're so fortunate that there are such good teachers like you out there in the world uh teaching our kids so uh my two colleagues uh i commend you on teacher appreciation week for choosing that uh profession and for all that you do um our referendum uh again citizens of clifton you you truly saw the need that was there you listened to us you believed us you believe the students and you came out and supported this referendum and we can't begin to thank you enough and hopefully going forward we will show you how much we appreciate that how much the kids appreciate it and uh you'll be able to come and see the the great things that your vote uh has enabled to happen here in clifton and i can't begin to thank the referendum committee all those people that took the time uh again volunteered their time they didn't have to be part of it uh many were asked to be part of it and uh they volunteered their time to work as this committee and uh we truly appreciate all of you for all that you did um the board truly is appreciative of everything that you did uh in helping this referendum so i thank the referendum committee as well um happy mother's day yes to all our mothers to our grandmother's stepmothers um beautiful poem by miss basford and beautiful saying there by vice president abu drabo and all my colleagues we truly appreciate uh mothers and uh we salute you on this mother's day uh and hope that you'll have a wonderful and restful day and um again miss danny a very happy birthday and um again my condolences to the mahalik family um being a board member is a great commitment and um we appreciate all that uh mr mahalik did for the city of clifton as a board member and to his family and uh our condolences go out to you and uh to all of our retirees uh we appreciate all of the time and effort that you gave to clifton um thank you it just isn't a big enough word so uh we thank all of you and i just have to name two in particular because they're uh very close to me um ms ziegler out of uh school 15 uh carmella and i grew up on the same street she was about the five houses up for me um we played many games as uh as kids will play and i remember such great times with her and i know she was always a very dedicated and devoted teacher and uh i wished you well in your retirement and clifton is uh truly losing a great one and uh on previously when i was on the board we brought this person on to help us in our technology field and we got our monies worth uh with mr chris hoey um mr hoey has been there for every aspect of technology phone systems etc and uh i thank mr chris howey for all your years and dedication to this district and i wish you well in your retirement uh as well enjoy and uh that's all i have uh superintendent robertosi thank you president smith thank you commissioners for all of your comments dr robitosi yes thank you mr president can everybody hear me okay um once again thank you um to our community for voting uh on our referendum i don't want to repeat what everybody else said but we made history in the state of new jersey and what you did will impact a generation of students in our city and i want to thank the referendum citizens committee we had people from all walks of life students teachers administrators community members parents who have children in the school parents who have children who've long since graduated and some citizens who don't have any children but knew that this was going to be great for the city of clifton thank you so much for seeing the vision and helping us get the word out and i got to give this board a pat on the back i know you don't get that very often but it would have been easier to not do this referendum it was a lot of work when this topic first came up i know people were very skeptical could we actually do this could we actually get a referendum of this magnitude passed in clifton or any city for that matter and it would have been the easy way out to say no it's never going to happen it's too much to ask that would have been the easy way out but you didn't choose that you unanimously unanimously said we're gonna do this and you all supported it every single day and using your own talents and in your own way got the word out and got the vote out and uh your names will forever be remembered in clifton history for changing and impacting the lives of thousands and thousands and thousands of children so thank you to this board of education thank you for believing in me um as your superintendent that i can help that i could help get this project done now we roll up our sleeves and we really get to work and uh the hard stuff really begins but and we're going to hit ups and downs there's going to be project delays and there's going to be ribbon cuttings and then the next day there's going to be a problem at another site and we'll deal with all that but you should be very very proud of yourselves um to our teachers to our nurses um what can i say i i sent you what i felt was a very heartfelt email uh at the beginning of the week i'm honored to be your superintendent i'm honored to work with such great professionals who love kids thank you for loving our kids know this when you love our kids and when they know it when they know you love them they will do anything for you and they'll never ever forget you they'll never forget the impact that you have on their lives so thank you for doing that every single day i'd like to wish an early eid mubarak happy holidays to our muslim community members and students and family members who will be celebrating i think that's a week from now next thursday or next wednesday night you'll break your fast so i wish you very very happy holiday and i know ramadan is more than just fasting and i know it's an important spiritual journey so i wish you all the best on this last week of ramadan to our parents who have either through a board meeting or through email or other means uh expressed a desire for our children to come back to school full-time um i can't make a promise tonight that we're going to reopen full time before the end of the school year or that we're even going to reopen on wednesdays i i can't do that there are so many factors that go on behind the scenes um as far as scheduling um as far as um the the school buildings as far as contact tracing as far as the number of cases that we have in the community it's not just a snap a finger okay we're gonna open up on wednesday or we're going to go back to a full schedule next week it's not that easy but i will promise you two things i will promise you that we are going to discuss this at the education committee we're going to look for solutions if it can be done we'll do it if it can't be done here's my second promise when september comes it is my expectation that we will be as close to normal as possible that means a full schedule that means lunches in schools now lunch may look a little different depending on what the guidelines are but we're going to be back to what we know as regular school in september and i'm gonna do everything in my power to make that happen and to our parents and to our community members into this board i give you my word that that is my intention that is what we will do now that is barring any unforeseen circumstance that is way beyond and out of my control but that's the goal and that's what i promise you i will do um and finally i was i was moved by what miss basford was saying i was moved by what um mr abdrabba was saying about mother's day a real happy mother's day to all moms out there all grandmas and all those women who act like mothers and you know who you are you're mothers to lots of people maybe not biologically but you're their mothers and happy mother's day to my mom in heaven um i uh i lost my mom when i was 19 years old and she was the kindest sweetest person in the world and i like to think that she made me who i am today and so on that note not to make anybody sad that's not what the purpose of this is i do want to make one announcement tonight and that is um i want to talk about my scholarship fund so about seven years ago early on in my superintendency in another district i wanted to use my uh my power as a superintendent to do something good for for kids other than trying to uh you know help them uh to learn and i thought that i wanted to start a scholarship fund because when i was a senior in high school i was the proud recipient of a local scholarship most high schools have a local scholarship award ceremony and i was the proud recipient of a local scholarship it wasn't a ton of money but it was it made my parents so very proud that i received this award and i remember that night at the at the local scholarship ceremony i remember one of the speakers saying remember this and when you have the opportunity in your life to give back make sure you do and so about six years ago i started the danny robert tosi superintendent scholarship fund in memory of my parents my mom who i lost when i was 19 and my dad who i lost a year later when i was in college and the last year that i gave out scholarships in my previous district i gave out fifteen thousand dollars in scholarships to deserving seniors so this year i'm proud to announce that although it's not quite fifteen thousand dollars um through the efforts of my scholarship committee that i've brought to clifton i have raised five thousand dollars without doing any thing that i would normally do like have a dinner have a golf outing and have all those things that we couldn't do during the pandemic just by asking people for money i'm proud to say that we'll be giving out five thousand dollars worth of scholarships to five clifton high school seniors uh at the local awards ceremony these are seniors who've applied i do not pick the students i have a committee that picks the students but i'm very proud to give out five thousand dollars in memory of my parents to five deserving seniors and i'm counting on next year when we're able to have that scholarship dinner and all the board members will be invited and anybody who wants to come will be invited we're going to have a scholarship dinner we're going to have some games a little tricky tray we're going to have a golf outing we're going to have some other fun events to raise money that will go directly back to clifton high school seniors and hopefully one day they'll be paying it forward to other clifton uh students so um i want to thank you all for the opportunity and we have that award ceremony i believe it's june 7th anybody remember off the top of their head june 1st thank you it was june 2nd it was moved to june 1st so among other things i'll be getting out to the scholarships so thank you and have a great night thank you dr posey and that's a really great news and uh great for you to offer that scholarship and uh great to hear that five high school seniors are going to receive that uh uh the rewards of that yeah so uh i apologize for that problem is just inform me that uh there's an average in my hair so that's why my internet is uh been intermittent years so i apologize um anyhow we'll try and finish up as best i can um we have business our uh june 24th board of education meeting change of date discussion dr robertosi isn't that you thank you um mr president so it's it's a discussion that i i'd like input from the board i'm not sure that we need to change it but obviously i'll take your input we have a meeting scheduled on [Music] excuse me make sure i have my calendar right here so we have a board meeting on june 6th i think i said june 10th earlier i'm not sure why june 6th and june 20.

so so the language says um school year 2021 so that would go so that envisions starting august of 2021 going through may of 2022 which dovetails nicely with the legislative session in winter spring of 2022 so hopefully we will have everything ironed out well in advance and be prepared to hit the ground running with permanent solutions in school year 2022-2023 um okay had we not had this amendment and again i know that as a board and we're going to be doing this in in likely in july um having a deeper discussion about it um but without this without that amendment uh and this would be a you know permanent change i mean this kind of cements us into going back to the legislature next year right is that correct yes it is it is my understanding and it is also a way to ensure that we are receiving um idea and title funding as well so it would um make us whole uh financially for the next um school year uh right um so we'd be we'd still that would go away uh at the end of next school year and depending on our you know whether we were able to resolve our differences with ad or not by that time we you know potentially would have to go back correct linda did you have your video open thank you president nigro i missed a comment or so of yours um but i did want to ask you maria murphy about the timeline just so i can get a better idea here of what to expect so the timeline we're saying 2022 we're hoping to get this approval finalized by legislature is that correct yes okay thank you what's going to happen from here until then from august 21 to the next school year how will we have that particular funding to support um medicaid you know that's something that's really important for our students so what's going to happen until that final deadline thank you that's that's another great question and so um what we are envisioning is is after the bill is third read if it is approved and if the governor chooses to sign it the legislation would become effective 90 days um after after sinai die uh we are speculating that sinai die or the adjournment for the session will be happening sometime probably within the next two to three weeks uh in the meantime we have a couple of different parallel tracks running uh asdb uh is going to be meeting with the department of education to set up these interim stakeholder meetings to discuss these ongoing issues and we would envision starting that um essentially once the legislature signee dies the on a parallel track um the asdb board is going to be doing work study sessions to discuss the direction that the schools and the agencies want to go into so um the asdb board will be contributing feedback to asdb and informing a lot of the discussions that we're going to be having with ade and stakeholders throughout the summer and the fall so the hope is that we would be able to get these um permanent solutions sort of figured out by fall winter and have a bill ready to go in january 2022 now once the legislature approves the bill and the governor hopefully signs it into law everything would become effective in terms of finances it would be with the beginning of the new fiscal year which would be july 1st of 2021 and we would have that funding in place for the 2021-2022 school year and is that clear or is that clear as mud because i know i threw a lot of numbers out there that does make sense thank you so much maria okay thank you okay um are there any other questions regarding this status uh seeing none uh thank you miss murphy uh for your your work on this thank you uh and we can move to 7.02 uh information and possible action resignation of karen grandin on bud's person and so for the the new board members uh a little bit of background we we have an agency on buzzperson we developed this policy several years ago uh we thought there was a you know we didn't have one uh we thought there was a need for one uh i i still think there's a need for one uh and so we developed this policy and we hired uh an ombudsperson uh and her name was karen granted she was our first ombudsperson uh she has some other uh career uh changes uh in her life so she is gonna resign or she has resigned um and that leaves us with an opening so in terms of you know kind of assessing state procurement rules and things like that um you know we we've kind of we think we've figured out uh where uh you know the path for procurement um but we need to identify potential uh candidates so i'll let superintendent reichman um you know add some additional information or speak to this as well but uh part of this agenda item is to kind of pull the board or at least get the board thinking of potential candidates uh that might be good uh for this position and superintendent right click you can even add what you what you'd like sure i would like to add to that board members um you selected karen grandin and then we tried to figure out how to set up a contract with karen grandin we learned very quickly that there are pretty strict procurement guidelines and rules that we are obligated to follow so the way to get around procurement rules was to directly hire karen as a part-time staff member she did not report to me she still reported to you the board so now karen grandin recently resigned she has a new job in washington dc and now we need to reconsider how we want to set the ombuds person within the agency do we want to again have the board members identify the ombuds person they'd like to hire and then do a direct hire with that person or there are a couple of other options we can consider one option is to open an opportunity for work and then publish a scope of work and then we can receive bids from potential candidates the board can review and select a candidate from those bids and create a contract um for an individual as a contractor not an employee and the other option is to go through the arizona procurement system procurement has several vendors who are already in the procurement system that provide ombuds type services we could do some research into who those vendors are and then potentially propose to the board which of those vendors we would prefer so we have three options currently in terms of looking for an individual to replace karen grandin the important thing is that we know uh who we're hiring uh in either way it's it's uh just a uh which you know which which process do we have to go through to comply with the various procurements for the board um would you like to move forward with creating a scope of work and then we can publish that scope of work and collect bids um and then once the bids are collected and we can review those and the board would have the opportunity to identify and select the best candidate um that would be a process that may take three to six months to complete um and uh it would be that long until we are able to contract the next ombudsperson uh superintendent rickman uh concurrent to that we can also look through people who may already be on state contract that we can hire through state contract correct so so if someone is if we find someone suitable on that's already on state contract we can proceed with that and as long as they agree to it obviously uh we can get them much more quickly okay and once we publish that scope will work we don't have an obligation to hire that one in other words we can publish that scope of work look through who's on state contract and if we find one that is acceptable we can go from there and cease work on the uh on the scope board yes okay yes um so the third option would be that we would look through and identify the current contractors that have a contract with state procurement and see if any of those individuals might meet our needs so we could start there i think that i mean i i think it sounds reasonable to look who's already on state contract to see if they're suitable they might not be um but you know concurrently just because of the amount of time that this would take to work on that scope of work which i think we have some of that documentation done it's a question of formatting it into the right format um are there any board members that would like to speak on this this is linda um superintendent or excuse me president nigro and i've got a few thoughts here and i do think my feeling is to go ahead and start with option three to see what's already available and if we find someone that we like go ahead and go through go that way rather than taking the time and the effort to do the scope of work i think that that might save us quite a bit of time if we don't like the options currently available then we can proceed with option two so that would be my thought thank you superintendent rifen this is uk um i also think we should look to see who is already on contract my one caution with that is i i would like to make sure that whoever um we even consider is sensitive to the needs of staff and students and or parents um and stakeholders that may have disabilities and require accommodations um i i think we need to be cautious in the sense that some of the folks on contract may not have had that experience before and i would like to make sure that anyone we do pick have some of that background or at least that sensitivity yeah it's okay that's a great point um and i know we were you know especially careful with uh you know with karen i would agree with that as well yeah yeah i know that that's certainly something and that's why you know i agree that we want to look at state contracts first but you know we may or may not find that specialized experience that already on state contract okay um so and there this is a possible action item i i i suppose um we could make a motion to direct the superintendent to review um buds people who are on state contract for their suitability and concurrently produce a scope of work that would be you know suitable for publication so i will so i'll make that motion um to direct the superintendent to to look through appropriate resources on uh who are already on state contract concurrent with creating a scope of work for publication uh for the intent of a procurement of those services i would suck at that motion okay uh there's no discussion on that all in favor of that course of that motion okay are you opposed okay great all right so the next item 7.03 discussion possible action on replacement of finance committee vacancy uh as you all know um you know mike natalie was on our finance committee with mike gordon um he did an excellent job again i had that background as a sped director and principal really understood school finance um but he's not on the board anymore uh so we will need someone to join mike gordon on that committee uh requires a commitment um to go to those finance committee meetings uh typically they occur uh just prior to the regular board meetings so there's about six of them a year uh and i know they've been they can be in person but you know they've been virtual for the last year uh so that's gonna you know requirements of it um if there's anyone that would like to volunteer um we can certainly talk about it now uh hopefully no one will have to be voluntold this is uk i am interested in in serving on this committee i i do want to say this is not um my strongest suit but it is one that i'm extremely interested in learning more about um i'll just leave it at that okay uh pv thank you and um i am also interested um i used to have good math skills but now i'm not so sure it's been a while so we would have to see test those waters again um but if um there's any kind of training or uh something along those lines and maybe we consider having a fourth member as an alternate if one isn't available we could have an alternate to meet committee forum so that those meetings could continue all right we have two now there's just just two um and i think we could have three i don't think there's a reason why we couldn't have three we could yeah uh uh mr wonders i'm president negro members of the board i would also be happy to continue on in mike's role um although certainly uh appreciate any other board members that would want to do so this is linda um please don't think that i'm volunteering president nigro i don't want to be on that committee but um math is my absolute worst subject so that is not my bag but um i did want to ask superintendent reichman if you would be comfortable if you're comfortable with having just two members of that committee do we need to have three i don't really know how those committees are structured so um are you are you content with two members or would it be nice to have potentially a deaf board member on the board as well or on that committee as well have the opportunity to participate give some feedback and learn that process perhaps contribute to the finance committee just a couple of thoughts from my end thank you this is superintendent reichman um i will comment just briefly the finance committee is um the only formal committee that our board currently has there are no real rules that dictate how many members that committee has to have um and personally i would prefer to see a minimum of two people um and if there are more than two that are interested that's fantastic we can have three or four committee members again it is up to the board members to decide how much time they want to commit those meetings are typically an hour to an hour and a half every two months so if you want uh to offer that um overview of the broader budget and things like that we can also provide a training for those interested in that committee um and for me um those two the two mics mike manali and mike gordon being on that committee and in those meetings i had the privilege of being in those meetings every couple of months and i felt it was very beneficial because they took a very close look at our budget and provided some direct feedback to us which was very helpful they guided some things that they wanted us to look at and we were able to provide a better analysis for the board so for me i think it's a really beneficial um practice and if we have three um board members that would like to be involved in that committee i think that's fantastic um we can certainly include you and if you want an orientation to the overall asdb budget to help you kind of start to understand those numbers not a problem at all we can certainly provide that yeah in terms of that i mean i i'm not opposed to having you know addition more than two board members uh you know the board you know we're all different uh we all bring different things kind of to the table part of that is by design um and the statutes and and why we have the makeup that we do uh you know part of the reason that we have committees like the finance committee is so that we can you know use that specialized knowledge and you know the board can kind of delegate uh some of those uh tasks to to those committees uh and then have them come back and report you know through shane's report every uh every meeting um to see some of that that information and we know that you guys have taken a closer look at it and we see all the reports too we see shana's report we can ask questions um but that's you know that that helps the board uh understand these issues so uh certainly i'm not opposed that the the actual determinations is just by the president's designation um so uh you know we don't need to have a vote uh on that or not uh so i know that we have several members who expressed interest um so so far we have uh aaron sue k npv that would give us uh four members uh and and i'm i'm i'm not opposed to that i just ask that if that if you're you're on it that you make the commitment to it um to attend the meetings uh and and to uh you know take a look at that work with uh miss cooper um you know uh if you all know how to use excel all the math can be done on excel so that works out well so um so as long as you're as we're up for the commitment uh which is really the only thing that uh that i ask um then uh success committee okay and and uh mr wonders and and pv yes okay well it looks like we have four members it's not just gonna be mike alone next next finance committee meeting so that's excellent so uh i will move you over to the finance committee and we will we will go from there so so thank you again for your your commitment to this and your service uh in this aspect okay the next item is 7.04 discussion and possible action approval of the strategic plan uh and here um you know and again i know it's the superintendent reichman and i will hand it to superintendent reichman in a moment uh but in board docs we have the strategic plan which we've all seen we've worked on for a number of months we've seen which has only been made available to board members that you know the input the stakeholder input that's been gathered by the agency since that we last met five or six weeks ago and there was some additional material there uh that we were able to review so so we have had access to all of this um superintendent uh if you uh can speak now as well yes you may have all remembered at the work study session you had requested for us to collect additional information and reach out to various stakeholders and collect some information from them well we have done that since our last work study session i will turn this over to nancy alexander she will provide you all with the summary of the feedback that we received from our stakeholders nancy thank you we provided the summary in your board docs you can see that we received several stakeholder input i'm not going to read the document to you but i'm happy to answer any questions i think it's important to note that your stakeholders believed that on early language development data collection having comprehensive goals that dealt with growth and looking at ways to improve communication and really the depth of the activities were the strengths of the plant we will share all of the comments which included over 150 of them with each pillar leader and they will incorporate those ideas as they move forward i apologize for the stripes on my face but my son is shining in on my lines and i cannot move right now so i do apologize are there any questions about the input from stakeholders president nigro do you have any questions uh i don't have any questions no i'm just uh waiting to see if anyone else does uh and if there's no questions on the on the feedback that we've received if there's any other comments that we have before we consider taking a vote here well i don't i don't see any okay do we have a motion then to adopt the strategic plan as proposed well well i well then i'll i'll move that we adopt the strategic plan as as proposed this is uk i will second that okay um all in favor okay uh all plenty opposed okay great um and that that passes that that's uh that's excellent thank you um you really for everyone for their their hard work over the last uh you know several months on this um i think this is uh when the the real work begins and we have this if we we have a good vision of where we're going um we uh uh no no that was the real word that was the start of the the real work so um again thanks for to all those involved with this and uh we're going to begin uh you know implementation right away thank you president negro okay um the next item on the agenda is 801 called to the public on non-agendized items i believe it's okay we have one comment is that right that is correct okay great um the topic is just non-agenda item um the person submitting it is richard mclaughlin and the subject line is incoming principal amber act i'm not just amber i'm not going to try and um get her name because i know i'll say it wrong and i apologize for that and the comment is i want to appreciate the board member voted amber a into as the next principal at the phoenix day school for the deaf ptsd when she was a fourth grade teacher she was tireless work to develop and to ensure every ptsd student received an excellent education thanks to superintendent annette reichman and assistant superintendent dr kristen rex to feel confident confident in amber to be the next ptsd principal congratulations to amber on your next chapter as principal at phoenix day school for the deaf looking forward to seeing pdsd provide better and top-notch education to every ptsd student okay great uh thank you ckay next is item 8.02 uh discussion possible action item agenda items for the next regular board meeting scheduled for july 22nd uh 2021 in person in sedona and the possibility of a future work session and you know here there's there's kind of a few a few items to talk about uh uh here uh you know one of those just the agenda items that you know anyone would like to talk about um so i guess we can why don't we talk about that first are there is there is there any particular item that board members want to see on the agenda for the july 22nd meeting uh it's okay um this is uk and i just would like to see the follow-up on um the 5.02 from this agenda um all right we can we can note that uh and then if you can make sure we note that in our notes yes we'll do okay i uh in terms of the the possibility for the future work session uh or maybe for the next meeting and i want to open it for discussion here you know the you know the the lead uh discussion again we've been kind of delaying it because the legislature i mean one for the strategic plan now that's now that's done with uh two the legislature um uh you know has been doing what it's been doing the last few months which was a bit unexpected uh if you know but but now is kind of the time when we need to have deeper discussions about that uh and we can do it in the context of regular board meeting um but we may want to consider having a work study session because i think some of the so there's going to be a lot of data to review it's going to be there's going to be some some quite a bit of material to review before we discuss that and that may get out of hand if we have it in a regular board meeting uh if we have an hour and a half let's say work study session on it um that is probably going to be a little bit easier to digest i think we'll be more effective in that regard so that's again we could do it either way uh but i want to open that up for poor discussion uh and part of that specifically is well really there's two parts you know what does being an lea mean um what is what are the obligations that arise because of that uh and are are there any obligations that arise because of that uh that we aren't doing now uh and and if so how can we know what would be the plan to be able to do them if we you know we're to be an lea or if they're board members i think feel that uh you know we shouldn't be an lea for one reason or another that would be the time to talk about it so uh we would need that that kind of deep discussion and the other part of the discussion is you know how do we relate to the legislature and how to relate to add right because i mean i think the basis of this is you know a good faith dispute that we've had with uh you know for a year and a half or so um and and how do we you know how do we resolve that when two state agencies don't quite see eye to eye on several things um so that's the the second part of that uh discussion is what's our once we figure out what we want how do we get there uh so again i think that's that's a lot to fit in the context of a regular board meeting so i'd prefer that we set a date uh for a work study session perhaps in august sometime but i'm open to the discussion on that uh linda this is linda hi um president nigel thank you i do fully support your decision with having a works study session in regards on the lea i'm partly and have been involved with this and just over time it's been a little overwhelming understanding every aspect so i think it might be best if we have a fully full understanding on what it means so that way we can move forward in our partnership with ade with my short and brief experience being in the house um and being sworn in not as a board member but just a community member i've realized and learned so much from ade and their representative and just how little that they know about asdb and the impact that will we will have if the le was removed i understand that there was not open communication between the two or agencies so i would like to tear down that trust i'd like to build better understanding so we do not have any assumptions moving forward i want every board member to have a full understanding of of the responsibilities and their roles what asdb is all about what ade is about and what it means to have and be an le so i think it's important to have open transparency and communications i think it's crucial for asdb to have that with the other state agencies so to have another meeting in august um sure and and let's not discuss this at our july board meeting this might be a little bit of a sticky topic so we should refrain from discussing that did the board meeting and then just have that only focused on the work session i'd like to hear more about this topic ask as many questions possible to anyone from ade see what they know about us how familiar they are with our school our campus philosophy strategic plans and so on i think we should be exchanging information amongst the two of us and communication lines should be open thank you i agree i think we need a work session i would hope that we could invite some people in from ada uh will rely on aaron and his expertise but to make sure that we get both sides of the picture and that everybody's clear on idea being an lea what that what that looks like in in its raw uh look but um i think we need to get a clearer picture of it's not just funding it's there's so much involved in being an lea so we need to have some expertise there to be able to educate the board um and i would just say i think it would be very productive to have a work session and dive into this and we'll certainly be happy to be a conduit back to the department and the agency um and bring information uh back to this board yeah yeah i agree or okay linda yes thank you president nigro aaron i appreciate um your willingness to openly communicate with us um and be a liaison between us and ade um i think that we have gotten some information from ade um but we aren't really we haven't had a great opportunity to educate them and to communicate our information to them um i think often it's hard for um people who are not in the deaf community to understand what it means to go to a deaf school and graduate from a deaf school and how that impacts your future so i think there's a lot of information and insight that we could provide to ade um to people that have never been in my shoes as a deaf person and so i appreciate the open-mindedness and aaron i'm really grateful that you're willing to join this conversation um and again i think um we need to work in alignment with our general education partners not um separate from each other and so i think we do want to understand ade's perspective and at the same time we want ade to understand ours and we do want that transparency we want that balance um we want our deaf p our deaf kiddos and our hearing kiddos to have an equitable opportunity for education so thank you aaron for your willingness to participate in that uh thank you lydia yeah and i agree with linda i mean you know being lea is is yes there's the federal funding aspect of it um but there are a lot of other obligations that go along with that and you know i think we do very many of them already but we need to think through every touch point we have with other agencies with with ascending school districts with with the ade um and look at all of what it means to be an lea to make sure that we're doing all of those things and if there are areas where we're not you know we we need to work on that um you know and again there may be you know board members that think we we uh should agree with ade's position that that the agency is not an lea you know we're certainly open to hearing that uh if if that is a sentiment of one or more board members um you know that's certainly something we would hear uh but you know to the extent that the uh the board wants to continue to assert that we're an lea uh you know based on various opinions of you know that we've received over time uh and and potentially with the new law which again may or may not uh you know be be uh passed and signed by the governor uh you know but to me i think it's important for us to figure out what we want as an agency and if what we want and how that how that fits with our strategic plan um and once we once we do that then we can talk about ways to interact with ade and ways to interact with uh the legislature so to me it's two it's two questions we have to figure out what we want first uh so you know for august i just don't know that we're gonna be in a position to have people over from ade uh other than uh mr wonders uh to talk with us before we really know what we want i think we have to know that first uh and then uh shortly there after thereafter and perhaps september we can start that uh you know that process of once we know what we want we can pursue how to get there uh so that said um i hope everyone has their calendars out um we can i mean we can do a doodle poll why don't we do why don't we do this uh if we you know um leticia can send out a doodle poll uh and we can respond to it and for the for the new board members it's uh kind of a fun google thing where we submit a couple of dates and then we pick one and and go with it sometimes we get all board members available on that date not we sometimes we don't always get that but um you know i would think that sometime in you know a tuesday or a thursday uh in you know sometime in august um you know we can do that uh if that that'll come back on the july 22nd meeting or that that would occur after the july 22nd meeting so i think what we should do then is do that doodle pulse see when we're all available and then in july 22nd meeting we can have an item on the agenda to approve that work study session and you know while we're at it we're probably going to need at least one other one to follow up from that in terms of how we're going to relate to ada and the legislature so uh that doesn't have to be until you know september perhaps early october but uh if we can maybe get some dates for both of those we can set two work study sessions and then hopefully by that point we'll we'll have we'll be much further along in this issue than we you know than we than we have been uh and i don't think we need to vote to do that but if there's any objection to that let me know okay the other item that we have uh here and it's not it's we're all in the same item the meeting on july 22nd is set for sedona uh and it's set for in person uh right now uh the you know and and the board and again the board has several new members now that it did in december when we passed all these dates and and set the meeting locations and things like that um but the uh you know i know we've done uh the media production has done some uh research at the site uh i think the first set that we looked at didn't have uh appropriate bandwidth but um superintendent reichman i i believe that we've identified a place in sedona that has appropriate bandwidth and has an appropriate space is that correct yes yes that's correct okay so we can run we can live live stream from that correct yes i think so um but i think it would be better to ask aaron um from our moira from our media department um i know that we could do zoom but i'm not sure what the live stream would look like um so aaron moya could you pop on real quick and answer that for us yeah well there he is hi um sorry for that yeah we still have to evaluate and see what the download speeds upload speeds are at this location um so depending on what that is i wouldn't really feel comfortable giving you an answer right now uh do you think that we can run a zoom i know in some of these talks that we had recently um it might be a case where we could run a zoom hybrid situation but we'd have to we couldn't live stream at the same time we'd have to tape the broadcast we'd have to tape the meeting and then put it on youtube a couple of days later is that is that still a possibility or yes yes absolutely so we could definitely record and upload after the fact that's definitely a possibility uh but but you understand your understanding is that we have bandwidth to do zoom at that location yes okay all right so so that's one i guess that's one issue for the you know for the board to consider um you know and the second is is attendance as you you know as you know it it does um you know all of our meetings you know cost money right i mean to have uh the staff here to have all the the media production that goes into this um you know especially in the i mean the live broadcast or the zoom broadcast there's there's there's media uh production that goes into it uh when we have in-person meetings in phoenix and tucson uh there's travel costs there's gonna be travel costs to sedona at least in phoenix and tucson there's um some uh you know there's some staff that live there that are local so they're only traveling a little bit so to that extent uh you know there's some added cost and i know we've we've given you that in board docs the the added cost um to go to uh to sedona so you know i just want to make sure that the the board is committed to you know to attending um i i know that i'm going to attend uh in person um but i want to make sure that we that you know the rest of the board is um uh you know we have some some commitment to to go there this is linda and i do want to apologize president nigro and superintendent reichman um i would not be able to make it on in on july 22nd i would love to go to sedona but unfortunately i have a conflict i've got some family things going on that day so um family trumps the board unfortunately so i apologize for that okay um and that's certainly fine linda we we understand and we know that you know not every board member can make every meeting um yeah we just want to be sure that we you know we have a sufficient number of people there um uh you know so that we all we all could be heard um okay uh so there's not any other comments then we just wanna uh i guess if i if i can impress upon you the you know the importance to either you know let us know if you're gonna be there in person or not so that we can we can set up appropriately and undertake that meeting up north uh pv thank you president nigro um i would like to um add a comment that i would not want to miss an opportunity for my very first in-person board meeting so i will be there that's that's great uh mr wonders uh and i believe i should be able to make it as well okay um 2k me too i don't see a conflict at this point okay great and dean's saying yes okay good and good excellent well great uh then we look we look forward to it um you know again we will have zoom uh you know that is available um so we will have that uh depending on bandwidth it may not necessarily be live streamed it may be recorded and then uploaded uh to the internet uh you know a couple days later or so um uh yeah we are gonna have you know we're gonna be masked and uh you know we'll have some distance if you know for the public so uh and we're not gonna be sitting right on top of each other like we were before um we still want to have that um but it's uh uh it is uh exciting to be back in person to some extent and that was all that i had for this item there's no nothing else then we can move on uh to 9.01 action item adjournment lynn i moved to adjourn this meeting second second all in favor aye opposed uh great thank you everyone so much uh for being here for your time especially over the last few months to get the strategic plan uh completed um you know again now now our hard work begins to implement that and to live that at every meeting uh and thank you to again all the the media production to produce the meeting and the interpreters um who helped us uh so well um and the rest of the staff so again thank you very much uh and the meeting is adjourned thank you bye everybody thank you good night

so uh that's not correct maybe i'm june 10th and june 24th thank you sorry long night um as the board knows and and most of the people watching know our last day of school due to the give back of snow days is june 22nd that'll be the date of our last day of school and high school graduation so then we have three snow day give backs um so there's no school uh wednesday the 23rd thursday the 24th friday the 25th um i'd like i'd like with with the board's permission to give everybody off on those days um after a year like this um i think it's well deserved so our teachers are not required to work because there's snow days technically 12-month employees um would have to work under normal circumstances but with the board's permission i'd like to give everybody off those days i think it's well deserved and um and if we do that we might want to consider changing the board meeting on june 24th uh to another day so i just like your feedback and input on that mrs smith yes mr password um we've always usually did away with the june 2nd meeting because it was too close to graduation uh so uh if anybody would really want to entertain i would entertain making a motion to do away with the meeting and also make the most good the uh 12-month employees lose three days off as well thank you miss bassford i'd like to second that as well to go along with our appreciation for our teachers that we've all been saying today this discussion okay seconded by vice president drama discussion any other discussion mr daley yeah i just have one one question for mr yusi uh whatever the last meeting is uh we have let's go ahead and mr daley yeah uh should be able to hear me the one issue we have um at the end of the year the fiscal year the board has to pass a re resolution how the surplus is going to be distributed post audit um so i just have to ask mr uc would he would we be able to have that resolution in the beginning of june um i don't think it's that difficult to prepare but i just want to make sure he doesn't have uh and his team have any concerns because we do have to pass that resolution that's completely correct i mean every week that goes by that's closer we could be a tiny tiny bit more accurate but it won't be a problem to for me to recommend what we should do um to the finance committee uh mr smith mr uc made a suggestion that we moved the meeting on the 10th to june 17th but june 17th is the senior prom and i'll be attending the senior prom and i expect that um and i'm not sure if the board members know but you'll be invited this year and i expect that some of you are going to want to attend the senior prom that night so it administratively as long as uh money mike says we're okay by the 10th i think we're okay um administratively by the 10th and i guess worst case scenario if we had to make an amendment mic at the july meeting is that a problem um statutorily this resolution has to be passed by the 30th so i mean worst case scenario we could call a special meeting if we had to but if we had to in an emergency okay but you but you think that you'll be pretty in pretty good shape to have that number by the 10th yeah yes thank you mike all right any other discussion staying on roll call mr awak miss best bird yeah miss beltram yes mr kenoba yes mr daley yes mr d miss danny yes mr casper i see him saying yes mr drabo yes and mr smith yes motion carries all right next we're going to uh move into exactly just one i just want to thank the board mr smith on behalf of the 12-month employees i'm sure they'll be very grateful thank you all right next we're going to move into executive session we have um contract [Music] list uh motion to move into executive session motion okay a second mr smith well uh is it possible that action will be taken because we need to say that um we just need to say mr smith actually may be taken is awesome well you've said it mr rusty okay uh actually actually maybe taken um after executive session yes [Music] and about how long are we going to be in executive session 30 minutes that sounds like a good guess to me um about 30 minutes i would say correct action may be taken all right uh just to move into the executive session actually taking approximately 30 minutes mr mr daley yes miss danny yeah mr casper yes mr rabbit drabo yes mr smith probably a little bit longer motion carries [Music] and there's also some background noise i'm not sure where the background goes let it be mr smith i think everything's just so lagging so it's not doing the normal noise cancellation but if you go on your iphone and join and you're not using we need to take this right yeah anyone who has optimum they're telling me there's an outage in clifton recording stopped don't don't lose hey sam thank you all right guys we're live everybody we're live so just hold off on everything thank you thanks santinos i'm getting texts that mr smith is live and no one else is i'm not i'm confused if for some reason mr smith is still not in the breakout room and we all are i'm here you can't see me so sorry everyone this uh just give me one moment [Music] jim has two i see you have two different profiles here okay drop one okay sounds like a bad remix right now now we just got to get back an executive i'm i'm not hearing any feedback right now which is great no i wasn't on to twice because till he accepted me into this room okay from my 5g to my regular okay now we got to go into the breakout room guys so click join all right everyone here yeah i'm glad mr mr mount is so awake yeah really all right we're returning from uh executive question uh mr uh uc rocco mr wad here miss bassford here miss beltran here mr canova i'm here mr daley here miss danny left mr casper here mr abu drabo here mr smith here hey uh the more the board met in uh executive session to uh discuss uh contract matters and um no action is being taken at this time we gotta do the claim yeah motion forward two three eight six so move someone buy discussion roll call mr awad ms basford yes miss beltran yes mr canova yes mr daley yes miss uh mr casper yes mr abedrabo yes and mr smith yes motion carries motion adjourn motion to return by me second okay mr casper hi hi have a good night everybody good night everybody good work thank you and good night good night everybody

12 11 c z z z okay uh move for the balance second i have motion for the balance okay mrs trejo aye mr o'neal aye mr jabbar aye mrs smith aye and i vote i okay 12 11 zzz and 12 12. so moved i have a motion in a second miss trejo aye mr o'neill christine mr jabbar aye mr smith aye and i bowed eye oh let me see her item 13 superintendent and staff report no report no report no report okay board of trustees report mrs trejo we'll start with you okay i'll make this really quick i attended my gastelpa monthly gaspa meeting my monthly no crop meeting i was able to get on the very last moments of the lcap and heard it all coming to the culmination uh it was great and they just it's just really amazing how even virtual they were able to get together and have all those discussions and and um challenges and so i'm just really proud of the work that you all do and i you're just amazed it's amazing to get everybody together i don't know how you do it every year but it's just amazing um i attended the orange county uh delegate meeting i attended um just out of curiosity the el road map from kern county and as as i expected um you know anaheim union is far and above kind of what everyone else is doing and i hate to say that because you want all children in the state of california to be where we are i attended the students vsa meeting it was their last meeting on saturday um and uh it's really sad to think about now now this is all going to be the last of the last for the year uh yesterday i attended the um the savannah capstone um still managing to get those kids um uh in their in the interviews uh it's just amazing i attended the rop student of the year interviews and all of our students were amazing it was very very challenging to choose the the three that we did and i just want to thank all of the students that are advocating and sending the board letters we're reading them we're getting them and keep advocating i love it i love the fact that they're just sending us these um these uh items and issues that they they they want to talk about um you know careful what you wish for and we're getting it because we've educated our students we've given them the voice and i love it and that is my report oh i saw the virtual color in light which was just absolutely amazing that they were able to culminate all of that art together and that's my report for real this time sure yes mr o'neill it's your turn i uh logged into the coloring light and saw the fantastic artwork too bad we couldn't have seen it in person but look forward to next year i attended a football game it was interesting to see the the lack of attendance in the stands but also glad to see attendance was in the stands minor but still it was good to see and the players obviously were having a great time on the field even though one loses one wins still there having a good time i attended a principal's meeting online enjoyed listening in and and seeing what's going on hearing what's going on i want to thank the presenters tonight it was very informative very professional and i'm so pleased to be a part of the district and seeing uh what we are doing for the students for our kids and it's going to make a huge difference in their lives in the future so thank you so much that's it okay mr jabbar yeah well i want to go mr o'neil sentiment thank you very much it was very good uh presentations all around so thank you to staff and i know you guys have been propped up by other staff who are putting the legwork so please thank them as well i attended a uh oh core uh a presentation which anne-marie did too she also attended it was a community group which actually anaheim intersection which put together a group of folks and they've been working on recommendations for anaheim union high school district and anaheim elementary they have some really good recommendations which uh we were fortunate and marie and i were to sit there and say that we've implemented most of the recommendations that they've given us so there are a couple of things that i think i've had conversations with mike which i will further continue with those discussions with him i attended a rop meeting again lastly i want to mention about our support our district's support to vaccinate our community is greatly appreciated not only in the community but all around even including healthcare agency and my boss doug chafee i know we had a 800 vaccine event which was one of the biggest clinics outside of the main pods uh the main superpods so it was great to have that clinic at magnolia high school we managed to do 758 our targets was 800.

so far we've done 36 clinics in fourth district with fourteen thousand five hundred and forty five shots in arm including first and second dose and many of those clinics were at savannah magnolia and uh and lower high schools so i'm very proud to be a part of that effort so thank you hell i heard today that the super pods are closing down as of today june 6th was it june 6th as of june 6 they will close down but then they're going to expand they're going to start expanding the mobile pods yeah yeah the community yeah okay thank you for all the work you've done with this journey and it's been wonderful and i'm personally very grateful i have a few things to share that are a little bit different i did join in on the insurance committee and we have a chap that graduated in the first graduating class from oxford his name is alexi robicha and he lives up in the silicon valley san francisco area and he started a company called better up has anybody heard about it what is it on all the national news and it's called it is a proactive custom coaching tech company and he hired prince harry to be employed in this journey and alexi is just one of these extraordinary people along with john nguyen many of us know john and his accomplishments and those two started yla anaheim leader and now it's yla i guess so i wanted to share about that and his picture was on the news and kind of a sad thing i was at postal express the other day and the gentleman had taken a piece of paper about the size of this and he wrote up your stamp return address and address and i said why do you have that there and he said well they're not teaching in schools anymore how to address a letter and i said what ages do you have that up there for and he said 20s 30s 40s and i said how old are you and he said 25 and he said they stopped teaching it when i was in the third grade so here we are trying to do what we're trying to do to help young people grow into successful human beings and it was just such a shock for me that i just had to share that with you and then um my husband has i have a deep concern for all the plastics that are going out into the landfills and the oceans and the harm my husband came up with an idea about two or three years ago they ought to consider grinding plastic up and using it with macadam and to build roads and by golly by g two days ago he got some information on the internet that there is a company in scotland did you see that and the company's name is mcadam and that's the name of the man that started the company and i to me that was just joy because we've got a problem with all this stuff that's used one time so that that was heartening and then i wanted to share something i received the quarterly news from the national farm worker ministry news and reviews and this week is national farm worker address week and every time i go to the grocery store and i walk into the produce area with all the vegetables and the fruits i say to the fellows working there somebody bent over to pick this up and put this here for us and i held these people so close to my heart and my niece is a nurse in the monterey peninsula and the community hospital in monterey and she has been telling me through last year that they have been inundated with farmworkers coming in with covid and you think of these people that produce for this country under terrible conditions and i just want to share that because i think we've all been through so much just a level of appreciation of what so many people do like math teachers people that are developing programs and interviewing and figuring out how much money we get and how much we spend i just want to thank you all i feel so grateful to be with a great group of people very caring people and so anyway that's my report thank you kathy okay so my past month i have attended um the opening of school task force meetings in the morning i've just about made most of them this month so far it was really good it's very interesting i'm really i'm enjoying those meetings and then i'm attended the principal's meetings for the most part i miss part of the last one but that's a learning experience too and it just keeps me kind of like in the know a little bit better i really like that i went to the insurance committee meeting and you know we did our normal business at the insurance committee and things are moving along fine and we are making some changes and looking into some possible other changes um i went to the ethnic studies uh i joined in on that committee and then the student discipline committee it was really fun because we worked on a dress code to present to the principals and it was kind of just a basic outline of trying to make it a standard across the district you know even with our our uniforms and what have you and trying to get a little bit more less strict i guess or less you know too much discussion about it just you know and so one of the things that i had to laugh about is we had to come up with like shorts no shorter than and we were you know one of the you know suggestions was you know the tip of your fingers you know your hand down there i said wait a minute i said come on you know if it had to be that you know or you know you're not taking into consideration differences in height and so we came up with mid thigh instead of into the into the fingers i said because for somebody like me that means it's pretty long you know this type of thing or short or whatever so that was interesting though but we you know and the principals had an opportunity to you know make suggestions and corrections or the committee did and then well you know they'll go to the principals next week yeah oh it was already sent okay okay good and then um that was then the sister city commission meeting i attended that i was a little late getting in there but evidently there had been some issues in the sister city commission meeting to the point where one of the members was kind of out of line and he was uh summarily removed from the commission before making inappropriate comments i but you know put it to say so also now the sister city commission which has not been changed since the new uh council grew to six areas so they are going to be looking at it now they haven't changed it because there was some you know we were working on exchange programs with mito japan and a lot of work goes into that and so they just kind of left it alone but they're going to be looking into making changes so that's coming down the pipe but according to the charter we are still as a district we have two people on that commission because they work so much with us with our students not always just our students but because we are school district and then um okay i attended the lexington ace interviews okay they had this program where they have achieving creative excellence where it's like a capstone program for the junior high and they had 68 kids this year that participated and these kids pick their own project and they do it they come up with their own ideas you know and they you know work on it and then they present it and they have a mentor teacher that will help them you know guide them answer questions but it was amazing what some of these junior high school kids did it was just so interesting i wish i could have seen more than just two or three you know but they didn't it was on zoom so but really great idea that we've got junior high school kids willing to do projects like this on their own and come up with creative ideas then i spent a number of days or hours watching broadband i mean uh webinars webinars i know orange county uh ocb you know orange county school board ocba ocba there you go they put out some webinars one on broadband and the in the web and you know what different communities are doing and you know there was a thing one a few years ago where anaheim was talking about having uh wi-fi city-wide and what happened it kind of fizzled out i mean so but the there are communities and school districts that have partnered with their community and they have established city-wide um broadband that i can't think of the one the name of this one community but they had one like on the west side of a tower and one on the east side and it covered the entire area into a small town but they got it done so it's something we're looking forward to maybe trying to work with the city to start you know helping out and getting broadband you know so that our students will have it and i call you know i did look in at the color and light and looked at some of the artwork and uh then i did oc forum i would looked on the law enforcement and today's law and there was a couple other i've signed up for a number of them so it's interesting i i some of them are very interesting to find out what some of these other cities are doing and some of the things that you get different ideas it's good old networking okay advanced planning future meeting dates our next board meeting will be held on thursday june 17th at six p.m okay and any let's see suggested agenda items okay then do i have a move so move for adjournment and i have a second

folks do [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] do [Music] [Applause] [Music] do [Music] [Applause] [Music] do [Music] [Applause] so [Music] yes thank you very very much i yes i cannot get over all those years and that true commitment to the school corporation to our community to our students especially to our students so we cannot thank them all enough and i hope they are planning to have a blast now that they have retired and our favorite next topic is an update on covid19 dr robinson not nearly as fun as celebrating the accomplishments of our retirees congratulations to those from the school corporation choosing to retire at this time like you hope that they have great plans set aside to enjoy that that time uh i i hope that tonight's copa 19 plan of action update review is short so it's kind of based on how what you bring to the table here uh this slide has been the same we've been five days of in-person learning since monday march the 22nd and maintaining those mitigation strategies we did at the last meeting change the distance from a social distancing standpoint for identifying close contact with six feet to three feet that was a change made at the last meeting prom and graduation we shared this information with you at the last meeting too uh at that point in time we had not yet yet held prom we have done that now it was on may 1st at northside middle school it went extremely well we were blessed with outstanding weather temperature sun all those kinds of things we're hoping that that's the same it will be the same right guys it will be the same for graduation coming up and you see the schedule there new tech has been moved up from friday to thursday just to give us a little wiggle room uh seven o'clock on east football field a rain date would be the 28th i really should just get rid of those rain dates it's not gonna rain so we can we should just drop those from the slide but columbus is scheduled for saturday may 29th at nine reminder that's just bumping it up an hour it was originally supposed to be at 10 o'clock again just giving us some space some opportunities in case it's needed and columbus north moves up from 1 p.m to 11 o'clock am to give us some opportunities so that is the schedule for graduation here in just a few weeks three weeks or so yeah gosh amazing all right so in terms of updated information from a per capita standpoint we are now at 6.3 it was a 6.1 a few days ago so we are at our lowest numbers since prior to fall break coming out of fall break they started to inch back up and of course it was november and updates cited on an earlier slide that we went to e-learning uh so those numbers are at least starting to look better uh the per capita uh the percent positive test rate down to 11.6 percent uh the the test turnaround time staying at 1.7 and covet hospitalizations are at six so numbers are in green for the most part with with the two yellows that we see so again at least at the time being heading in the right direction uh with those numbers from a comparison to the state standpoint our county remains at a 0.5 so in the blue but you do see that over the last changes over the last few weeks there are some orange counties starting to pop up so that always makes us a little anxious when we see other places start to increase in their rates whether it be the actual per capita rates or their positive test rate we are still at a 0.5 in terms of other pieces of information this slide we share with you each time too just keeping count on the positive test cases we have had we are at 662.

undermine my institutions [Music] hello everyone if you don't know me my name is elena jacob and i just wanted to welcome you all with a speech that i made so laughter exploded out of my computer speakers as i talked to my fellow people officers over google me only the sounds of people wheezing holding onto their chest for a chance to breathe could be heard the hysterical atmosphere placed us in the same room sharing our common thoughts and feelings as we headed into completing the largest task of the year though our officer team was daunted with holding a fundraiser for the first time online our common core values allowed us to click the humor we shared allows tensions to ease so i have to thank miss clinton camp for insisting that the platform we were using to raise children's miracle network was snapchat you know the one with the dog filters and selfies was what we're using instead of snap rays our difference in distance and age not hinder us from becoming a dynamic team by the end these officers not only had the courage to keep leading members online but we all as key club members became the pillars of the successful fundraiser that was able to raise over four thousand dollars i welcome you all both to in person today and to those watching from home to key clubs danbury high school key club 50th anniversary and induction ceremony if you were to ask d-club alumni all those years ago where they thought danbury high school keep love would be in 2021 i don't think they would have fathomed what we've experienced this year in fact i don't think we even imagined standing here today but despite all that we have endured i am proud to say that the integrity of this club has not been moved in fact i would say it's strengthened with over 1 000 service hours key club members have been able to uphold hiko's message of building our home school and community through various ways in another year raising money for a charity would be the only thing we could call an accomplishment but this year we have painted a mural for our school a garden for our community it has served local online events that have touched individuals from their homes the highlight of it all is the character i've observed from you all but spending time with officers and members online smiles are always scary even if you can't see it and the memories i've created this year are something i hope to never forget oh and if you don't know i am the lieutenant governor of division 30 of the new england and bermuda district and i served as president of danbury high school key club maybe i forgot to mention this because things are coming to an end and as the first and last time i am able to say that title of you all that title i was only able to achieve with my belief in god my parents who drove me to countless key club events and my friends so for supporting me along the way however we are only getting started so the social committee and the members have prepared a wonderful ceremony today that i hope you all enjoy and i know next year the next president of louisiana governor yes there are two people this time samantha anderson and after rafi will be the key to success next year so next i would like to introduce the alumni video which features alumni of our club from various years and i hope you all enjoy [Music] though our dna high school key club started in 1970 with less than 10 members today young students ready to serve as key club has grown over the past 50 years key club members still follow the virtues of serving our home school and community we want to ask alumni how they keep following the virtues of people beyond the days of high school so here they are hello my name is murray stratis and i've been a part of the key club for two years this year i've also had the honor of serving as an officer position so one of our questions we have for our key club alumni is why did you join key club hey everyone my name is angela sacrano and i graduated danbury high school last year in june of 2020.

um in the corporation that's 20 more than the last time we we met 428 students 162 support staff members and 72 teachers that break down again just represents the population so 4 percent of our student population 14 of our nearly 1200 support staff members and nine percent of our around nearly 800 certified staff members and again mentioning that 20 cases we've had 20 since the last meeting on monday april 19th 19 of those were students so that is the positive cases for the most part we are seeing now our students within our system i think that is it i'll take any questions you have all right other questions colleagues have [Laughter] all right next is the opportunity for individuals to sign in and offer us public comments and i don't have anyone who has signed in this evening so what you uh shared mr stenner really to thank our prom sponsors tanya cruiser at north stephanie meyer at east and veronica butler at csa new tech as well as some key support workers brett bozeman john green bridget van horn and kelly thompson so thanks for that extra effort to make it such an exceptional night for everyone and if i may here i go i wanted to commend both charles edward and kimberly easton they'll be presenting in a statewide workshop a webinar entitled child psychological maltreatment training of trainers and that will be tomorrow and wednesday may 11th and 12th they'll be talking about the topic of racism and its impact on psychological maltreatment of indiana youth and lastly though it would be lovely that i might read all these names but i shall not i want to offer commendations to the individuals at c4 that were a part of our future health care professional state leadership conference in total individuals at c4 earned 52 medals that are either first second or third place and the number must be so large i was told it was just thousands in scholarships so that is most impressive and very exciting that we offer that additional opportunity to students here at bartholomew consolidated all right commendation school board member report anyone yes this is i was not able to attend but the districting and facilities committee meeting had a meeting last week kind of went through the same visioning process that we did as a board during our strategic planning meeting recently so nice great any others thank you dr shed i attended the health trust committee meeting and mj insurance and i'm sure that mr phillips is going to talk a little bit about that tonight i think maybe i'm not sure but i mean i couldn't talk as intelligently as he does about it anyway so you know um so yes we discuss some of the options we have typically we go over claims and look at those and that's what we did this time as a as bcsc and we looked at some of our vendors and just discussed getting the best and most effective health care in our district that is at the lowest cost for not only for bcsc but also for our employees and so we discussed that at the health trust fund this time and then we had and that was on april 28th i believe and then the diversity council on uh april 24 first again kimberly presented on diversity equity inclusion just to keep this in your minds there are four subcommittees of the diversity council and that was our diverse curriculum restorative justice underrepresented teachers and the family academic achievement network um we're going to be talking about some strategic planning in the diversity council i think on may 19th i believe is the except it's all right anybody's okay thank you dr roberts and what the direction what is our direction on the diversity council are we an advisory board are we action committee um what are we so we're going to i think we're going to do some activities that day maybe a chop talk or some other things to determine where should we go from here we've done a lot of great work the diversity council charles and kimberly and everybody else on that committee done a tremendous amount of work and and we have i believe that the corporation has made some great steps in trying to be equitable in this corporation regarding students regarding teachers regarding staff and we just need to keep that keep that going so that is my update on both the trust fund and diversity council thank you thank you very much mr grimes um wednesday evening i will be attending the spring seminar the indiana school boards association to get all the most current up-to-date information coming out of this this last legislative session so i would say i'm looking forward to it but i'm not sure that's right i am yeah i'm looking forward to it yes thank you thank you for i enjoy those i'm just sorry i'll be out of town all right cabinet member reports good evening thank you dr shedd our 403 b a benefit is probably one of the things we least talk about we haven't visited in 12 or 13 years but it is an incredibly valuable benefit that we offer to all our benefits eligible employees um and you know can can lead to you know multiple thousands of dollars per year going towards someone's retirement account so um we decided that it was appropriate for us to take a look at our 403 b and 401a vendors for the first time since 2007 2008 and dr roberts you might have to hit it i turned it on and off and on and it's still not thank you um and so so our why behind why visiting this at this point in time you know mainly because there have been enormous changes in the market in that time frame so really fees have just come way down as index funds have taken over the world but you know cost was not our primary nor our only reason for looking at this we wanted to improve the employee experience make sure it was less confusing especially for new employees coming in and trying to explain something so simplify the process and remove barriers so that more teachers more employees would participate in the benefit and get those matching dollars because as you may or may not know you know we match up to five hundred dollars for every support staff member every year that puts in money and up to three percent of a teacher's salary every year if they put it in the 403 b so it's it's free money that's left on the table if employees pass it up and so anything we can do to make it easier and improve participation that was one of our goals and then we also um did not have a fiduciary that looked out just for bcse's best interest and our employees pl um best interest in the marketplace and so we wanted to add that layer of protection and so we put together a committee um those folks are i think several of them are on zoom i can't see the who's on the screen but um tess bannister in in the off in the payroll office who does a lot of the work with the vendor so she's on the committee for that reason judy brown at mount healthy also supporting support staff and kirsten loftis is here tonight and scott sivers both appointments from the cea and then myself and we also hired a consultant who's familiar with and has done rfps for this with other school districts in the past chris casares and so thank you to all those folks who helped with us because it was a lot of work over the last few months that went into the process not knowing if we would change but really just revisiting it making sure we were getting the best option possible so throughout the course of february we had initial meetings met with our consultant and established the criteria for the process not criteria for the selection but what kind of process did we want to run we wanted to make sure we were rigorous looking at everything we possibly could focus on outcomes for all of the employees of the district not just the people on the committee and be ethical and confidential and then also have a consultant engaged again to make sure we had some knowledge of the industry and then we established criteria for vendor selection so these are the five things after the committee met talked to other employees that they work with in their buildings these were the five things we were looking for when we evaluated all the vendors that were out there again fees are there but not the most important thing employee experience strong options and and having good a firm that has the right appropriate size and experience to serve a district of our complexity in size and so the dr roberts hit that one there we go in march we issued an rfp i left it out there for a couple of weeks and got i believe 11 responses to the rfp to the rp's that was a lot of reading there was there was a lot of materials there they all wanted our business there there was a lot of people that submitted an rfp and so that was terrific um and then we we narrowed it down to five finalists and in this room back a few weeks ago interviewed each of them they came most of them came in person some in zoom and gave us gave us their best pitch we then contacted references narrowed it down to two even more finalists and did a follow-up call with those folks and finally it was it was terrific was when we got down to the finalists in those five and we did a presentation in this room after the very first presentation we said we'd be incredibly happy with them and then the next one we'd be happy with them as well they were every one of them was a win for us and for our employees and so the unanimous recommendation of the committee is that we select csi advisory services to serve as the fiduciary for the plan basically this group will be looking out for us so that we never go 13 years again without revisiting in the market and saying are our employees getting the best deal possible are they paying the lowest fees getting the best fund line up and so that group will do that we did not plan this going in but that committee will now become a standing committee only meeting once or twice per year but again to look at the options that employees have look at our fund lineup say is it performing the way it should and rfe is competitive in the market the second part of that and this is the that's kind of an inward facing entity there uh csi will serve the committee in the district and our plan our four through b and 401 plan from an employee standpoint equitable is the platform and the advisors the advisor advisory services that we're recommending the fee i'm sorry for csi the fee is a flat dollar amount per year ongoing with an additional amount not to exceed ten thousand dollars in year one so thirty thousand a year and ten thousand uh for the first year knowing that there's a lot of work coming this fall uh as we transition our employees to the new platform the fee for equitable is um 31 basis points but we're still working on that and and think we're going to probably end up landing on some place a little lower than that that is about a third of what we're paying for our three vendor options that we have now depends on the option that you look at but our three different options that we have for employees now for the 403 b average about three times what that fee is there and so all 401a accounts will go over to this platform to the equitable platform and then all future contributions to the 403 b accounts employees will be allowed if they wish to do so to leave any 403 b dollars they have with their current vendor only but all new contributions will only go to equitable for both the 403b and the 401a so throughout this is the implementation timeline so we're seeking your approval tonight to move forward over the summer we'll get everything planned and ready we'll start with enrolling only the new teachers um you know at the end of july and beginning of august on the new platform and basically they'll be our practice and then throughout the entire fall transition all other employee groups one at a time to the to the new platform and so as a result of the process we're confident that our employees are going to get better and simple more simplified employee experience i'll have an integrated platform right now everyone in the district if you work here you know this i mean you have two different logins to two different platforms two different websites to go to and two different logins and passwords to go see your 403b and 401a account this puts everything in one place we also added the fiduciary services again to make sure that we're getting the best deal ongoing and then of course a more competitive fee structure these next few i'm not going to go through them but there are a few examples that are in your board packet that actually csi put together for us based on the new fee structure estimates of what employees at different places in their career distance away from retirement basically how much they would save and each of the next three sides shows that these these three employees will all have at least ten thousand dollars more in their 403b 401a account at the end of uh when they go to retire as a result of the lower fee structure and the total cost savings again it all varies and it all depends on how much moves over but the annual savings is going to be somewhere in the neighborhood of nine hundred thousand dollars per year that our our employees will not pay in in fees um and then of course there's some examples there of what alice bill and susie could do with that that money that they save in lower fees and then what this means for employees this is important and i've already put together a video to send out employees to tomorrow pending your approval but the the 401 a vendor changes to equitable as does the 403 b and they'll have one login one password with lower fees and then those all employees will have to sign up with equitable and create an account advisors from equitable will come and meet with employees in every building this fall or employees that want to do it on their own can just do it and log in create there'll be instructions for them to complete the process online and then there's another important step for employees to decide what they want to do with their existing 403b assets if they've been putting money in there for 20 years with a current vendor that we work with and they want to leave it there they're certainly welcome to do so they'll just have the knowledge that they're doing so at a higher fee structure than what we asked through equitable mr phillips on that bullet point there what's the default if if the employee does nothing and doesn't respond to your emails or memos what what happens to the 403b assets the 403b assets will stay where they are all new contributions will go to they'll map what the employee is currently putting so if they're putting their money into a an s p index fund currently all their new contributions to the 403 b and for away on the equitable platform will also go to a similar fund so that they map the funds from one to the other gotcha is there a way for the default to be that the assets move um supervendor that's a good question i don't know if kelly kelly with csi is on on zoom i don't know if she could answer it but i have a feeling that because it's we control because we have the contract with the 401a bcsc because we're putting the money in we have the contract with the 401a so we can mandate that that money moves but i don't think without employee um permission i don't think we can move the 403 b assets and i'll follow up i'll i'll find out from chad oh hi kelly hi um i can answer that question right now so um with the 403b assets the way they're currently positioned with um either valik or metlife or aspire the three vendors that are currently being utilized for the 403 b those are considered individual contracts and because they're considered individual contracts the employee controls where the money goes so that's why we can't default those employees and force them to move their funds into the new program because it's considered an individual contract the irs won't allow for the employer to come in and say you have to move we can come in and say all new money starting the state forward will go into the new provider but the the account that you currently have as long as it's a 403 b account we can't force them to move that thank you kelly you're welcome thank you the kind of question we'll have answered now because we can we can talk to kelly when we need to any other questions that is the end of the presentation mr phillips i'm just out of curiosity about what percent of certified employees participate in the match plan good question um about 600 out of 700 teachers and almost all administrators so about certified employees and about 600 a little more than 600 of them and i i send them once a year i pull up everyone who's not participating and i send them an email and i'll change the title uh the subject line every once a while to be creative and say something like twelve thousand dollars in your retirement account that you're not getting and then give them the instructions and i get a few every year but there's just there's just some i we do and this is something that will come down the road eventually but there are a lot of employers that are now going to default enrollment so all employees are enrolled automatically unless they opt out in writing and we'll probably visit that at some point in the future too because it's shown to be much more effective way of getting folks to participate just to eliminate the barriers for them so at some point we may go that direction that's a great idea i've got one more quick i'm sorry would you anticipate a um a fairly smooth transition from metlife to equitable on the 401 side of things or is that going to be are you going to meet with a lot of resistance from metlife do you suppose i i don't anticipate it from metlife we have a good relationship with them i've had conversations with them after we we selected equitable and and they were told that that they weren't chosen and very cooperative there are always going to be some bureaucratic problems that come with giant systems trying to work with one another but i don't think it'll be because they don't want to work with us but you know we're moving uh hundreds more than a thousand people from one platform to another so um the good part is i did call during the reference process i called at least three school corporations that had transitioned from their current vendor to equitable and all of them had good things to say mr phillips as far as the process this process you set up a few slides back will that be the same process you use from now on and did you say how often we would look at the look at this again like how often and once every few years or i can't remember you may have said that so we will look at our fund lineup and the performance and the fees every year with csi we just um met the committee met the other evening actually via zoom to look at what kelly had put together at csi for us to consider for a fun lineup if we moved to equitable and it was a it was a healthy conversation one we've never had as a district before we just had the lineup that was recommended we did use morningstar to review them and make sure they were quality and but this is a more personalized service they meet with our employees our employees looked at it and we made some changes based on feedback from the the committee so we'll do that every year but looking at the whole picture of who our our vendor is we will basically rely on csi and and that and that group to always come back to us maybe as part of our annual review are we still getting the best deal that's out there in the market should we negotiate better fees or um you know look at a better service so that may end up being part of our annual review but we've we've not yet done it okay thank you you're welcome great that was my question thank you all right other questions well thank i don't know who initiated it but thank you very much and thank you for all the committee members it sounds like you did an enormous amount of work uh to the benefit of all your colleagues so thank you just remind the board that uh thank you mr phillips for the presentation remind the board with chad's presentation there that this information to use as we go into this next piece which is my recommendations for approval and and the 403 b 401a vendor change is a part of that approval so i will run through if it's okay doctor shed the items that i have not as lengthy a list as as sometimes but a few definitely some important items on here so we'll start with the minutes of the regular school board meeting we did have a relatively lengthy school board meeting last time so there are a few pages of minutes for you to read supplemental contracts included in your packet field trips and professional leaves school fundraisers we have claims and payroll so we had a set of claims dated today may 10th that's about 1.4 million payroll for march 29 through april the 11th about 2.6 million dollars and actually second set of plans uh claimed plans for pre-run from april 1st through april the 30th that totaled over 7 million dollars additionally we have the english and language arts adoptions for both the elementary and secondary resources those presentations were given to you at the last school board meeting we have student handbooks for you to approve some pretty typical changes that were in there all these additional edits and so forth to make but you should have the student handbooks for each of the school buildings you have the 403 b 401a vendor selection to approve and then we have the teacher and support staff second semester stipends an additional half day pay for teachers there was a resolution for that and just a reminder on that resolution the teacher support staff second semester stipends aligns aligns with how we did that first semester recognize the result an awful lot of hard work second semester two then the additional half day pay comes if you recall we had to move some um teacher work days as we tried to finagle some time at the beginning of the school year so we utilized the end of the first semester as well as the end of the school year move those up well now we have no paid time at the end of the year but we know there's still a lot of work to be done so we're just restoring that half day pay opportunity and then those who choose to work that time will get their that additional half day pay so we're asking for that in that resolution and those are my requests for approval this evening all right thank you very much so i'll um ask for a motion to approve items for a through j as they are presented to us so moved thank you mr grimes is there a second second thank you dr bills any particular questions individuals have i do have a question about the school handbooks just out of curiosity are those updated every year yes okay and are they made available to the students and parents just at the beginning of the year i mean how are they made available like year-round and they or how does that work and they're on the website yes so a combination of things probably and we do have some principles that are here but i'll throw this out there and then either dr agnestra jensen or one of the principals can correct me but um we have printed versions that are provided in not all cases but but most of many if not most in the electronic versions and then on the website of each of the buildings would be an electronic version that can be accessed at any point in time so please add or subtract from that commentary good doctor heck i've lost mr jensen whereas where's bill there he is okay behind mine charles back there okay in different languages too are they provided in spanish sure question i am not sure that that is the case do we have spanish versions of the handbooks no i don't know if this is ignorance of my part nick with with those that are on the website whether they are adjustable based upon our website piece or based on how it's entered as a document it may not be okay yeah okay but that would have to access that tool to be able to do that so thank you dr wilson for mentioning that we can certainly work on on that item okay all right and just a shout out for the work that goes into those school handbooks i think i don't know who got the prize for 62 pages but one of them was that long any other questions all right i'll call for a vote those who approve items for a through j as they've been presented to us if you'd signify by saying i i any opposed there you go dr famously sure it's your turn miss heine this isn't the last time no okay just check dr roberts thank you uh the signing so a couple of things here tonight we do have for the request for approval of the human resources recommendations we have i don't know five pages or so teresa in there but um additionally we just wanted to to bring to light as a part of the recommendation that charles edwards is being recommended for our for a cabinet level position as director of title services uh we've recognized teresa a little bit we still have more recognition for teresa and she does have one more meeting still left we have that countdown going um but with teresa's announced retirement that left a vacancy and so at the last meeting dr gina pleak was requested or recommended to to fill that you did that but by approving dr fleet you left a vacancy in our director of title services position an extremely important position for our corporation handles millions of dollars that go to benefit our students and provide resources whether it's its materials or staff for whatever the case might be so that we can can assist our kids as well as we possibly can and so with that vacancy we went through an interviewing process and have uh we are recommending charles edwards which is the current assistant principal columbus cease recognizing if you approve mr edwards and he's here so he's hoping you do that um that we'll have a vacancy mr news may be hoping not uh i'll do that we'll have a vacancy as assistant principal at columbus east uh to fill so that is a part of your recommendations and miss heine you can add anything to that okay excuse me so i am at your place this evening i'm sorry we'll start with that at your place this evening is an additional request for recommendation we continue to get those in throughout the summer we will probably continue to do that so the list that we presented tonight for retirement was just up until last week so there may be some more additions across the summer so i am recommending or requesting approval of the human resource recommendations as presented all right thank you i'll ask for a motion for approval of the human resources recommendations that we have so move thank you mr brian is there a second second thank you dr bills any questions of miss heine dr roberts all righty all of those and approving our human resources as recommended to us if you'd signify by saying i i those opposed unanimously thank you both and welcome dr fleek had been on the on the cabinet team for a few years now has it been three four gina um so with with moving and just kind of changing changing locations or offices there but adding now charles to this office so we're very excited about that and as with all the work that we have to do uh we're doing a lot of strategic planning work right and you guys have been a part of that and when we look at the future and we're doing the moonshot stuff when we say all right here's our moonshot well ten years from now we we land on the moon and then we have a remember wind moment we look back and and i'm thinking the rumor remember when may have been the night we hired charles and so we're very very pleased and blessed to have him joining the team and looking forward to that indeed thank you so much all right this is opportunity for input from colleagues i'll start with you mr grimes um i'd just like to congratulate all the uh all the retirees again in their 613 years of combined experience and dedication to the corporation all right thank you mr stenner i echo that congratulations to all our retirees and as you said i hope they are looking forward to the next chapter in their lives our thanks to mr phillips originally i joined keith club in order to get more involved with student activities i was a very shy freshman coming into high school and i was just looking to fit in and making friends over the years however as soon as i joined key club it became so much more to me than that it would be a place where i would learn to grow and prosper as i learned more about leadership and giving back to the community overall it became a part of my high school experience and one that i will always remember and hold dear to my heart hi everyone my name is rebecca anderson um i'm a stanbury high school key clubs webmaster for two years and a general member of the club for four years i graduated in 2020 and i am now a freshman at the university of connecticut um so i joined key club as a very anxious freshman who was really just trying to find my place in the very big and very intimidating new school after attending my first meeting i immediately felt that sense of belongingness that i really really needed um k-fuck really just made dhs feel so much smaller so much more manageable and so much more purposeful as well community service was new to me at the time but i always had a desire to help others from my lifelong desire to teach to my love of just being out in the community i knew that joining club was the perfect outlet for these passions that i possessed key club has had a huge impact on my life it has taught me the power of community the power of commitment and the power of service most importantly it's safe to say it even solidified my decision to major in education as i realized that helping others is something i would love to dedicate my life to as a college student this passion is only growing stronger so much so that i am going to be uconn circle k's digital marketing chair next year which is kind of funny with all that being said happy 50th anniversary key club thank you for guiding me to where i am today hi i am srija tarala an upcoming co-secretary and i'm currently in my sophomore year i wanted to ask you what your favorite memory of key club is and if it was an event or a project please explain it to our members and thank you hello everyone my name is emma thatch i am the former 2018 denver high school keith for president i was in peace for four years and i became president of my senior year i'm currently a junior at yale student economics and pre-med i wanted to make this quick video talking about my experiences my very fun experiences looking back on gary high school key club and the different service events that we hosted and spearheaded looking back on my experience with key club i definitely remember the hoops for hope and our annual red cross blood drive and booster hope is basically a fundraiser that we had for a basketball game at denver high school we raised funds for hurricane maria every week in puerto rico and the red cross blood drive was basically our annual summer blood drive that was entirely student run and so looking back on these events i remember them very fondly because i remember not having much experience leading really big service organizations as well as a really big events um you know like those two events that i listed um i think these two events are just my experience you know as like in general really taught me leadership talking communication and taught me determination hi my name is before ruffy and i'm currently a junior i've been in people since my freshman year and that officer since my sophomore year first responding teacher then as co-secretary and now i'm going to be president this upcoming school year so what is one thing you think members should take away from key club hey dhs key club i am george martinez i was vice president of key club there at dhs and i graduated in 2019.

so my answer to the question what do i think you guys should take away from people because personally for me is balance so when i was in key club and when i was vice president i was taking five ap classes and i was in deco and then i was vice president and that may seem like a lot and you know it was it wasn't fun but you know you know what you can handle you know what you can do and do what you feel comfortable with doing but you know also push yourself a little bit you know because that your balance can always change you can always accommodate things that you want to do and things that you should do that you should get out of the way um so just you know do whatever you want but you know buy a new balance hi my name is elena jacob i am the current president of danbury high school key club and i also serve as nintendo governor for division 30 of the new england and bermuda district for key club the question i have for you is what does the 50th anniversary mean to you as an alumni hi key club my name is jessica elizondo and i graduated in 2017 from dhs and now i am a senior anthropology major at uconn with a minor in animal science a word to describe key club for me would be continuity key club continues and will continue to inspire so many young individuals to give back to the community just as it did for me so many years ago and being its 50th anniversary this just shows that key club will continue to continue to inspire so many individuals in the years to come heathcliff inspired me to join a sorority at yukon where one of our pillars is cervix and i accumulated over 200 service hours within my time at college it also has inspired me to apply for the peace corps as one of my post-graduate plans and hopefully i will get accepted and serve two years in a different country giving back to a more global community i hope key club continues to inspire so many young individuals like yourself and i want to thank you for all your hard work i hope you guys have a great time and have a great day hi everyone my name is ireland janelle and i am co-vice president of key club and and today i just want to introduce mrs soraya voldeo and she has graced us they serve as a peace corps volunteer miss valdeo served as a community educator in the kingdom of tonga in the south pacific for three years teaching english at a government primary school and reading she's a stefan king fan exploring new places and spending time with family and friends her favorite quote and personal motto is by john f kennedy one person can make a difference and everybody should try over to you ms valdeo [Applause] all right good afternoon everyone um welcome welcome as noted my name is ms bilbao i'm an esl teacher here at danbury high school and i am very much honored to have been given the opportunity to speak say a few words here in your very special day here in your induction to key club which also marks the 50th anniversary of the organization so i thank you for the opportunity i'm pleased that to see so many of you have taken the decision to be a part of keep club and to engage in service to others i went to the key club website and it states that key club is a student-led high school organization members make the world a better place through service in doing so they grow as individuals and as leaders by answering the call to lead summoning the courage to engage and developing the heart to serve and as you embark on your journey as uh key club members i'd like to take this opportunity to reflect a little bit on what does it mean to lead oxford dictionary defines leadership as quote the action of leading a group of people or an organization another definition defines uh leadership as quote the art of motivating a group of people to act toward achieving a common goal in this paradigm it seems that leaders are individuals who have some skill attribute knowledge that other group members may not have and it's that individual who motivates and coordinates to help others achieve their goals however i would like to propose that we take that paradigm and shift it and i'd like to talk about leadership in a different way in the way in which the leader is the servant per wikipedia servant leadership is a leadership philosophy in which the goal of the leader is to serve another organization expands on this concept a separate leader focuses primarily on the growth and well-being of people and the communities to which they belong while traditional leadership generally involves the accumulation and exercise of power by one at the top of the pyramid servant leadership is different the servant leader shares power puts the needs of others first and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible and how do we do that how do we participate and actually implement servant leadership it comes back to what we learned in primary school the five who's uh the five w's uh what are the five w's who remembers who what when where why how um so it comes down to asking the questions of those who you work with and those who you work for um for example as was noted earlier i i had the wonderful opportunity i'm very excited to see that one of your alumni is also going to be pursuing peace corps um i years ago a few years ago back in 2005 i made the decision to might join the peace corps myself um it was a difficult decision to make a little nervous about never been overseas for and away from my family for such an extended amount of time peace corps service requires two years of service um i actually ended up extending a third year i was known as what as was noted earlier i served in the kingdom of tonga in the south pacific when i received the imitation letter after all several months of applications a very lengthy application process and once i received my applicate my invitation letter in the mail i opened it and i was like wow i gotta accept that kingdom of tonga and then i'm like where is tonga so how to quickly look in the map and uh it is a little speck in the south pacific um uh if you're thinking fiji samoa that's that's the vicinity um and while i was serving um overseas that's where the concept of servant leadership um really it gave me the opportunity to really apply that for example um going into a lot of us there were group of us uh many uh volunteers we a lot of us were graduates from college um some were retired individuals some had masters others were had a previous experience uh who already seasoned in their professions so we came in knowing right we were going to help others we were going to lead them into something and it took children from a primary school to kind of put us in our place um so we had an activity one time where the image of a coconut tree was put up projected on the board and all these uh uh you know young people adults seasoned uh volunteers were asked look at this coconut tree and what are some of the things that you could do with this coconut tree we were having we had service we had training in the country um and so we all had brainstorming we came up with all these ideas um i think at most maybe 15 20 things at most in terms of what we could actually use with the coconut tray and then all of a sudden the same question had been asked to a class one of the classes at one of the primary schools and the list that the children generated far outnumbered the list that we seasoned our volunteers could come up with um and that just highlighted the importance of uh focusing on asking the questions so when we talk about serving others it's not about what we know and what we're going to give to others but it's rather turning it around and saying what do they know how do we learn from them and how do we help mobilize how do we work with our community how do we work with our group members to bring something create something new so as on our own we only came up with a certain number of things we could come we could do with a coconut tree uh however the children having lived being in that culture living experiencing that having historical background with their families uh using coconut trees in so many different ways who are easily able to generate a whole bunch more so how does this story relate coconut trees relate to your service here at denver high school as key couple members since we do not have coconut trees we have now a wonderful garden which i happen to see which is just outstanding um but as a rising key club member and what i would like to consider as a rising servant leader the challenge is i challenge you to look at your role as leaders leading the community not necessarily as what you know and how you can give that to others but rather taking a step and looking taking your role as investigator as the servant leader asking the question who what when where why how how do what do you know asking the questions from from the student in the group who is a newly arrived esl newcomer who doesn't know the culture here who doesn't know the language making sure that their voice is heard all the way to the student who's taking honor classes several ap classes every single person in that group has a say they have ideas and it's your challenge as servant leaders to make sure that every individual feels valued heard and appreciated in the group and you will be so amazed to see the diversity and the variety of projects that you're able to develop and i'd like to just leave you with a quote uh one of my favorite quotes some of you may have heard this uh it's by a chinese philosopher um lao tzu i believe and um it to me it speaks to what servant leadership is and it states go to the people live with them learn from them love them start with what they know build with what they have but with the best leaders when the work is done the task accomplished the people will say we have done this ourselves and uh so right now uh does my wish for each and every one of you in the upcoming school year uh now and in the future uh that i um i wish for you that you engage in servant leadership that allows your group members each and every one of them to say we have done this ourselves thank you congratulations on embarking in a lifetime hopefully of service to others uh you will get a lot more i'm speaking to the choir but you get so much from it both individually and hopefully with others as well thank [Applause] you thank you so much mrs bilbao i would love i would now like to invite all of our 2020 2021 officers to the stage during this difficult year all of
