[Music] i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all anybody have any conditions or changes to the consent agenda any discussion on anything on the consent agenda [Music] okay i think everybody should do both computer loss yep motion passes six zero moves on the public comment section concerns so usd 244 patrons but if there's others have been here a long time but i'm not sure how well the work got out the ministerial association hosting a baccalaureate service on wednesday night to be at the christian church this year and so everyone's invited thank any you communications um there's one in there i think but mr sam mr stevenson um uh wrote a note did i attach it um sorry it says please forgive the tardiness of the simple note it's purpose move on to administrative reports bes any comments questions for knowledge on that jones literacy grant it's five year cycle sevens we're good there will be for the next five years going forward [Music] um sometimes i think with the investments that they do with the jones trust it fluctuates the dollars in that dollar amount so sometimes each year we make it a little bit more than we you know throughout that binder cycle sometimes it fluctuates based on investments okay i guess we'll go on to the middle school report any questions i like seeing that uh activity list down there and that was a nice little addition to be able to see participants and how great those kids doing all their activities plus their grades get you guys to show the more engaged they are the that's what i was going to say appreciate that you put together that document that shows the gpa what's the participation activity thank you [Music] and if you're planning on standing up and uh you know uh coming up to give your son or daughter a diploma just let me know and i'll make sure we have a way for you to come up and do that and uh lucas you'll be on the stage uh which i'm sure you know uh it starts at 11 o'clock on saturday and uh i did put out something today uh we're watching the weather as closely as we can i looked at the weather it's about 30 40 right now and the wind is 19 mile an hour so i'm just looking at stuff and i'm going to talk to kids on graduation day or i mean on practice day get as much information from them i know they want to go outside so when i don't want to be where the hats are bowling and everything else either so we'll just have to wait and see but let me know if you're planning on getting there and i'll get you a seat off to the side i think i saw the communication went out to about outside is an unlimited number and if we do go inside we tend to take it ten ten instead of four yeah ten instead of four now so we'll go 10 inside if we have two most of the kids i've talked to didn't think that was they were real happy about that and i said well we went 10 last year never had any problem outside and they said well it really shouldn't cause too big problems especially since we live stream and stuff so if they're having a big party at their house they can they can uh if there's a few more people they probably just stay at home and watch it there but they'll have access to their student there that is the saturday guys that's coming down i don't have anything else i just want to make sure you guys will wear that we got a lot of stuff going on right now so well dave is at sophomore the virtual way to do that i had no work but i it was on the phone with the kids and the family stuff that was enjoyable for me i liked that a lot of good comments on it again i really did the kids really like it i i heard two or three parents give me a call and i talk ask a bunch of kids and the kids i love it it's just one night last night they have to get out they can be right i kind of like it because a lot of them are with their parents and stuff i think there are some organizations that really like that face-to-face contact other than giving away those scholarships yeah and you know we might be able to kind of add that into it as we go you know it's something where they can speak move on to the bronx learning center report short and sweet and move on to food sources looks like we got waivers for lunches for next year yes very fortunate yeah it's very fortunate to be able to provide free meals again next year um we weren't sure exactly if that's what that was going to happen but they are continuing that for one more year and that helps us with our reimbursable rate too because we get the higher reimbursable rates it does help us with funding with the food service dianna s and tracy do a wonderful job with food service work so in the summer or yes through the rec center yes right so at that meantime noon hour they do have lunches through there go to the transportation report a lot of information there i think it's good kind of gives us an update on stuff we haven't seen for a while um breaks down a lot of stuff that kind of is background stuff for the rest of the school but it's good to get that information out there we want to see you guys like to see the updates on stuff right two new buses this fall i'm sorry good oh i'm sorry i agree i like seeing those updates as well um planning to get up in a data field how do you appreciate that yes on the bus situation uh we were looking to do one bus next year and and looking at the fleet very carefully with brad's and so since brad griffin is taking over we just felt like we were needing to get a second bus it just uh it was just it was time um we and here's the problem because of some different things with uh with the with the production of vehicles uh for example i just talked with deborah ahmadi on friday because we were looking to possibly get a new transit van as well because those have been received very well said there's an issue with the computer chips for those vehicles and they're way behind ever indicated to me that they produced like one-tenth of the new vehicles over the last 12 months this 12 months compared to the year earlier ford motor company has produced about i say one tenth of the new vehicles that they have in previous year so buses typically you can look to order a bus like in march april and have it ready for august well ordering bus now it looks like it's more like october november so because there's just been so many people order buses come january february march they've ordered a lot more and then there's fewer issues there's issues with the technology piece for the for the computer parts of that that bus so we're we may be we're gonna be okay but we just we say we would like to get rid of a couple of those older buses trade those in or most likely just put them up for seal bits so anyway but a lot's going to be dependent upon depending on how quick they can get now that we've said it with social media stuff but i'd like to thank the people in the parts of our community that donated stuff for the new uh flagpole baseball field that was nice those companies and people that were involved with that so i'd like to see that civic pride look at that pretty burlington high school the motorized flag that we receive donations for it's very very nice i need to send that to you in my friday notes um very nice it's a lot bigger than even what we thought it was going to be nice it was quite a challenge to install that because it was close to 400 pounds so we ended up with two scissor lifts going on both sides of it to take it up the side and then secure it and then get the uh get the motorized piece of it done but um yeah it's very nice so it's something it's been active move on the special education report um i don't really have much to add other than i will say that our certified positions in terms of filling them at this point is going very very well um and so i can start to get a better feel for a number of paras for next year um and superintendent i have just listed a few things up there for example just some dates and some information um and mr reed's already talked about graduation so you guys will connect with him in regards to graduation if you're planning on being in attendance um we're doing that half day dismissal at 12 30 on tuesday may 18th for uh the end of the school year we'll do get the dismissal get our buses get the kids home and then about two o'clock we'll do staff celebrations and recognitions we've got a whole list of uh end of the year recognitions uh for retirees as well as five years our different years service awards i think it's 5 10 15 and so on and so forth so there's a lot of different awards we'll give out there so anyway and then i just want to thank tracy tracy has been with us for nine years and uh she's resigning effective may 14th uh she has a new job in pogba school district cannot thank tracy enough for everything that she's done she's just been an excellent employee over the years i just think a lot of what she's done and greatly appreciate everything in the ways that she's helped not only me but everybody so we wish her well in her new job and in the future and thank you very much sure um i'd like to thank the board for your support and opportunities to do professional development over the years and do all the staff here that have worked with me over the years that i've learned from and i'm gonna miss a lot of them here so thank you and then i want to yield the rest of my time um brad thompson we've been talking about the potential for doing a lighting project an led lighting project at the football stadium and this is due to the fact about february we turn lights on for football field for track as well as for baseball and softball field to see what was coming on and what was not coming on what we needed to replace football field we had about eight lights not come up there the old halide i think h-a-l-i-d-e brad can help me with more technical terms so when that popped up at eight lights on four different poles and you got a different truck coming into service and put those up and we only had six in stock right now we had a few that uh i say just a few left in stock we started looking and thinking about the cost of what it's going to be you know to be able to to replace those old walls and then in in a year and again it's somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 to 25 000 they get an hourly rate when the truck comes in and you have two different people that come in with that for that process and so then we started to discuss okay again in here like a year from now if we had another six seven eight lights go out well you're spending another twenty to thirty thousand dollars potentially on those uh on those replacement and repairs if you will so anyway the discussion started i shared this with you as the board we were looking into this and we did have this budgeted again in the capital outlay for this project so with that information we started i say do a lot of exploration on led lighting and stadium lighting you guys have seen the projects in the gyms elementary middle and high school gyms all have led lighting classrooms we're getting light led lighting we're going to be doing more of that in the future with the new new line boards the touch panel newline boards the led lighting and dimmer type capability in classrooms is not needed as much because those like those new new line boards are much more vivid they are smaller so much better than the promethean boards so dimmer lighting as well as led lighting in those classrooms aren't as necessary right now we still want to do some of that and still you know continue with that in areas we need to but with the stadium scenario we can start spending like i say some bad money year in and year out if we're spending twenty to thirty thousand dollars on replacing six seven eight lights at about and that can be i can say a challenge so this is why i'm looking at this project as a possibility and with that i'm going to turn over to brad thompson brad is a moscow lighting representative and brad you're on we're going to go to hdmi that we'll have on the screen here for those of you it won't be on this screen because we hooked up a whatever i can't remember what that is you may have to turn your chairs if you want to see this the video presentation that brad's going to put in so touch screen tablet but i'm going to be able to remember what you're looking at first off thanks for having me uh i really appreciate it um i also want to thank i say that i can't believe that well it's really cool that somebody brought the treat off for you guys nobody's eating your treat again thanks for having me i'm with musco sports lighting moscow is a 40 plus year old company that does sports lighting with a little set of asterisks around it the asterisks are basically because with the inception of led we are now doing uh things other than sports lighting some examples of those would be the white house mount rushmore the bay bridge the washington monument niagara falls and things like that so that being said sports lighting is the main thing the inception of led has been pretty pretty fun uh it's it's done a lot of things for us moscow's background has simply been that we control spill we control glare we get the light out of the fixture on the field uh it's interesting to hear mr marshall talk about the outages that you've had the other thing that's going to happen and i'll tell you about in a minute but the smoothness of that light on the field is extremely important for both viewership players and uh and all three of your players and safety when you're on the field so i will do my best to hurry up and not bore you so if anybody falls asleep i'll take that as a hurry up and get out so what i'm going to do here is just kind of show you what the systems themselves look like and what the lights look like now you guys are in a little bit different situation in that uh the plan is to use your current polls uh the cool part about that is you get to use your current polls we get to take the stuff down that you have we get to take the cages and all that kind of stuff that are down it's going to have a much cleaner look we're going to take a lot of weight off the top of those poles and it's going to save you literally thousands and thousands of dollars so the interesting part here is uh the fixtures the interesting thing uh with sports lighting is you've all been in fields before in games and you've noticed in the past where you look up and if my hand or a fixture is round and you look up at it and you kind of get the glare and you kind of look away and get the sparklies or whatever the new inception of what we do with led lighting our lights don't do this they aim directly down so about halfway up every pole and mr hess said something about it a little bit ago he was at a tournament and saw some lights about halfway up the pole maybe a third we're going to take some lights on your football field we're going to turn them upside down those lights are called ball tracking fixtures basically they're going to be there for one reason that's to illuminate the object from the underside the bottom line is whether it's baseball softball or football any aerial sport we're going to have those playability is going to go off the chart and little bobby and little susie aren't going to be able to say they couldn't find the ball anymore they're gonna have to learn how to catch better for fans better for referees and the whole thing so the other part about this is kind of neat is this piece right here number three um going up the pole that is a electrical components enclosure that enclosure is going to be remote about 12 feet up the pole with led the inception of led is basically going to eliminate any need to go to the top of the pole there's several hundred led diodes in every one of our fixtures you're gonna have several fixtures up there obviously so that's gonna be thousands of diodes uh if one little diode goes out you're never not gonna know you're gonna be okay if anything happens to the fixture it's more than likely going to be the driver or fuse that can be handled in that box 12 feet off ground with a step ladder piece number two you'll see up there that's the galvanized steel pole obviously you're using your poles so that's one that isn't a big deal right now let me kind of go to the next page here this one's called light control this section um basically what's happened in the past is there's a lot of different fixtures that have been out there fixtures depreciating value uh going back to what mr marshall said a minute ago you've got eight fixtures out right now a year from now you get eight more that go out you get to go back and keep doing this the problem with that is now you've got eight brand new ones you've got eight that are ready to die so you've got eight white ones eight pink ones some yellow ones the bottom line is you're not getting as many lumens which extrapolates out to light on the field and if those are in bad spots now what you've got is you've got an uniform or an unsmooth feel going to be hard for viewership playability and those sorts of things oops sorry just to show you kind of what our stuff will look like versus anybody else these poles here uh all the poles other than the one on the far right on the left are muscle poles um that's must go stuff through time as you can see as you go from the left to the right as you go from this pole here all the way over to this one that's hid or metal halide stuff the one that's above the word that says low what you've seen there is you've seen we've reduced the glare we've reduced the glow around the pole we've reduced the fixture count all of those poles are giving you the same amount of light on the field in front of it though the second pole from the right is our led pole believe it or not there are two fixtures two light fixtures on that hole that are turned on and again that's because they're aiming like this so we're completely cutting the spill and glare which i want to show you some pictures of in a minute very rarely do we talk about anybody else this is one of those rare cases uh the poll on the right is our competitors that's probably our one of our best competitors our number one competitors um i wish we had a red line drawn from that poll all the way back to what we were doing in 1977 because of the lumen output the glare and the numbers like that that i could share with you if you really want me to worry when this is done is worse than what we were doing 40 years ago with hiv liking so to show you a couple of pictures um this picture right here bottom is what others do with led the top is what musco does with led the one thing i'm always concerned about and i i think if if there's anywhere that we kind of struggle a little bit is that i don't think that we always talk about the consumer or the fan as much as we do the player because this is just as important for the consumer and the fan as it is for those on the on the playing field so that's going to be pretty intrusive that bottom that bottom picture and what you're seeing there this picture here is a football field that was done in scottsdale arizona a private school in arizona originally we did not get this job why they put six polls up i'm not sure because we would have only done four there's a lot of names we have for this field but this field never had a game played on it unfortunately three people lost their job over this thing scottsdale and arizona is very very very big on dark sky stargazers and those sorts of things and there are some really expensive homes around this facility the glare upset everybody so much they shut it off two people from the city and one from the school lost their job they asked us to come in and use those polls if we could and redo it and we did and that is the difference the problem again we keep going back to playability and safety and whatnot i'm not sure how the field on the right is very playable we've taken all the light out of the fixtures and it's hitting what it's supposed to hit so the idea of the the bomb in the air um grandma coming to town looking for the the sky glow she's not gonna find that anymore you can see a beam but the sky ball in the air is not going to be there this right here is kind of an illustration of what glare does if you're looking up at the ball uh the picture on the left is somebody else's the picture on the right is musco's again because we've cut that spill and glare spill light is light that exits the field and exits the property and lights other property glare is the light that you get that's the obtrusive light that hits you in the face when somebody has their brights on in the car you can see if you look about a third of the way up that hole on the right you'll see what we call the ball tracker that's the fixture that's turned upside down it is not aiming directly up in the air it is aiming at a little bit of an angle just to get about eight percent to nine percent of the light on the field underneath the object so as to illuminate the object as we talked mr marshall stealing my thunder here a little bit before i started i got to tell you because he started talking about dimming and everything so we have um here we go so with our controls um with the musco system what you're going to get is you're going to get a new control cab you're going to get lights on all the poles you're going to get the ball trackers you're going to get a new control cabinet that control cabinet is going to be the guts and the brains there's several things that are going to happen there we're going to know when your lights are on and off and that kind of thing we're going to know if there's a problem we're going to be able to call you and tell you you've got a problem probably before you know you have a problem you're going to be able to operate this thing remotely you can pre-program by computer or the athletic director can decide or superintendent can decide who and how many have access you can take it and give it that access you can use an app to turn lights on and off facilities guys love us they don't have to go out early and turn the lights off and go home craig loves it because you don't have the lights burning for extra hours the cool thing is it's real efficient and real easy to use when you buy a system [Music] every system comes with dimming when you turn the system on it's going to go to high at the touch of a button you'll hit the medium button it will go to half and another touch of the button you'll go to 20 and when this first came out i've got a little egg on my face right now with my boss and some others because i kind of made fun of the low turns out low is the one that i talk about the most now is being used for cleanup pickup low-end stuff any kind of other things that you don't need where you don't need the big practice the big like issues where you're not lighting the world up and spending the money to do so um high medium low is also a favorite of the athletic directors they get to kind of ramp things down basically telling people along the way of cutting it to half and cutting it to 20 that they want to go home it's time to leave so um the other thing that's cool about this is you can use this for different types of events i heard you guys talking about graduation we are seeing a ton of graduation ceremonies being done outside and i'll even show you something else in a minute here which may or may or may not surprise you and what you can do there and you can pick that lower light level so even if you had a little kids football game and they wanted to play on this field you don't need to have it to the high school level you can drop it down save some money and do your thing the next option the next thing we have is a package called show light entertainment basically what's going to happen when this happens is we're going to put an ipad type thing something about this size in your press box it's going to be either wall mounted or table mounted it's going to kind of look like this it's going to have several buttons so you're going to have the high the medium the low now you have to turn the lights on the normal way you can either turn them on with your app or pre-program or you can go to the box which is still a fashion way to use a key because there is an overlay switch on off and auto but then once you get into it you also have this other stuff um you're going to get a blackout button i've already told mr marshall i'm not sure why that's there i'm not a big fan of that i'm not sure too many will use that i kind of see mr jones walking up and having his coffee and someone blacking out the lights and tripping and throwing coffee or something silly but the cool part is you're going to get these shows um that are going to happen at a touch of a button now it's immediate in the field when you do it out there and these shows will turn on for a period of oh come on let's try this one this isn't very good you're going ahead trying to work on that real quick mention the warranty um there's a 10 year warranty on the lighting system um uh the musco is a local it's a it's a local in a regional area you're based out of iowa is that right brad yes fresno ohio so they have that connectivity piece here it's in close proximity any you know issues pop up drew rose is the gentleman from integrated integrated consulting engineers ice is the company that we've used with the first rating wing renovation the science rooms as well as the the early learning center and the baseball softball concession stand and drew and brad have worked together on numerous projects um scott city just did their lighting as well as they did at turf field there but the lighting piece drew and and brad worked on that for maze oh i think who else um trying to think of who else but we've done junction city several in kansas city maze like you said the one you talked about out there derby high school shawnee high school basically what i'm trying to get to guys i'm not sure if it's it's my connection here or what's going on but when you punch that button the lights are gonna dance you're gonna go back and forth you're gonna get six pre-programmed shows that are available at the touch of a button we've got a school in it just as an example in blair nebraska that the the argument we may come up with somebody that well i mean this is great but you're just doing it for the football guys not enough so i mean soccer football graduation the band program at blair is kind of a renowned band program so what they did was they had the band director came out and he videoed all six of these shows and he's got 200 plus kids in his band program and they're orchestrating music to go with the shows to incorporate more kids into what's going on so and when i do show you it's very cool um while it's doing now i'll elaborate a little bit on the warranty the warranty is going to cover everything for the you're going to get a 10-year warranty uh it's going to cover parts and all that kind of stuff the bottom line is you're getting the same fixtures that we are going to have in the dallas cowboys stadium the ranger stadium the yankee stadium we use for the olympics and all of that it's the same fixture um the catches you're just not buying 800 of them they buy a lot more so um and do much higher light levels so and we can do it we have a purchasing group uh through a group called equalis so greenbush provides that purchasing group where we don't necessarily have to bid a project like this because they're already approved a little bitters equalis is more of a larger regional national type group that we can use for them for this there's no fee there's no yearly fee there's no subscription fee nothing at all we just log on and we do a registration for the requirements piece and uh i say we can go through um then we don't have to necessarily do that not to cut you off just to give you a look what it looks like these are all done at the punch at the punch of a button my recommendation always is have one of these shows when your kids are coming out of the locker room that's the show that's being played obviously this is not for the kids on the field uh 100 this is as much for the fans and the experience and the whole thing as it is others a quick story i'll show up tell you is uh we sold this system to derby high school uh if any of your football fans around here we all know that derby is some kind of football power in kansas and they bought it about the same time shawnee high school up in kansas city bought it and it's really kind of bad that i went down this road but unbeknownst to me derby's first theme was at shawnee um and i ended up asking the derby coach about a week and a half later hey you know when you're up there did you happen to see how the lights work well they punched the button every time that shawnee scored and they beat derby 4087.

okay it's streaming okay in case you're wondering that clock is not correct around this [Music] welcome everyone you please uh join us thank you very much hopefully mrs allen here mrs christ here mister here mr ellery mr mcgivin president thank you you have an agenda mr president or so i have a broader discussion of some issues underlying that rather than the voucher itself 11 f is that correct so that's agenda item eight approval modification about this correct f is that yes okay [Music] yes motion passes as amended thank you call to the public okay is there anyone on the phone online thank you we have one called the public uh roger truman if you would please um please state your name and address upon them you have about two ministers i'll take them out of 30. thank you hi i'm roger schuman i'm a bus driver for the district my first year here i spent 10 years driving first really before that i drove in oklahoma city before that all that was basically worked around my real career which is started out as an accountant that i would include for the air force and then i taught college in high school bcc i'm here tonight to brag at my boss trying to get a pay raise and i put down some reasons why i think he deserves and i've also got a recruiting plan to help us be more staff with drivers for next year let you know what i'm going to do to help the district out there's only one copy of the of this for everybody to read and then there should be enough of these or at least seven out of eight that's it thank you any further good evening and welcome to our board meeting it's nice to see so many people usually we're sitting here with ourselves and our staff so um thank you for being here um first of all i wanted to acknowledge the volunteer little gift bags that board members received are from our volunteer committee and we normally have a big volunteer breakfast at the end of the year where we recognize all of our volunteers and being that as you know it's an odd year we weren't able to have our potluck this year but our committee did put together some goodie bags for our board members and all the additional volunteers who helped us out behind the scenes in the school year so i just want to make sure that you know that the bags came from our volunteer committee here at school secondly happy mother's day to all the mothers i hope that everybody had a great weekend and a nice sunday we are sailing towards safe harbor so we have eight official days left in this 2020-2021 school year last week we celebrated teacher appreciation week and i can't say enough how so very proud i am of our teachers and staff strong teachers don't teach content google has content strong teaching connects learning in ways that inspire kids to learn to learn more and strive for greatness greatness an extra special shout out to our ptc for the amazing treats they provided for our teachers and staff all week our adna team provided lunch on friday for our staff and we will be celebrating our classified staff on wednesday and as you see there's our little canoe there getting to safe harbor so we've had we've been in uncharted waters this year so we're proud to be colts we had our virtual career day last week last wednesday it was our first annual virtual career date we had you can see our zoom screen there it was very successful our career day committee worked very hard to make sure that our presenters had things that they were able to log in and meet so our occupations included ranchers attorneys an author musician u.s border patrol d.a technology specialist homemaker so again a great big shout out and thank you to our career day committee our eighth grade trip um started out with the day at the state capitol the day was very informative and everyone was very excited to see the students you know they hadn't seen a lot of movement around the capitol especially with students during this pandemic so it was the first time in a long time thank you mrs kaise for your help in making this possible and you can see some pictures there that we took um with uh president karen fenn senator david gowan gail griffin and representative becky nunn so it was a good day and the eighth graders will be um the students will be putting together a presentation and highlighting their the entire trip this was day one so they have a lot more to share with the board and so they will be here for um hopefully our june board meeting uh navi also had a virtual conference which was the national association of bilingual education so we had three staff members mrs cuevas and i um attend the sessions what's nice about the virtual sessions as they're recorded so we can go back and share them with staff members as well who didn't get to attend we are working on reinstating and refining our dual language enrichment strand this year we kind of had to mix the kids into different classrooms at cohorts due to the number of students who remain virtual and the teachers that we have still here on campus our students have tested in spanish for preliminary data with our nwa map our new assessment also provides a spanish assessment and we are working on developing a bi-literacy skill for elementary and middle school to prep students for high school and entering college so we want to develop some rubrics and benchmarks so that kids can receive a bi-literacy still to continue into middle school and then that we can present to them at eighth grade promotion to prepare for high school earth day planting thank you to our buy there the rotary for our 500 grand so we were able to buy flowers and if you look around our campus they we have about 12 different planners that are potted finally we had our parent volunteers who helped us out who were amazing and our staff of course that we honored our kids who had perfect attendance were the ones that we chose to come out of class and help us with the plan team student health update so our number of students with pink dye and flu overall have definitely improved from last year so we know that students are being seen by nds at urgent care centers more quickly and are being treated and not coming to school when they're sick our mitigation plan has restricted students from coming to school sick which has been helpful and communication has been a key factor as well so that's great news to share a great teamwork by all because it really is working with our families and communicating and with our teachers in order to ensure that everybody everybody stays healthy student attendance and health update friday we did have 50 students absent 16 on warranty and one ice quarantine and one isolation monday today we had 57 absent with the same 16 on quarantine and one isolation we currently have our dual language enrichment preschool under quarantine the students will test on tuesday and may return on friday with a negative result otherwise the students will return on may 20th and we did move the preschool dual language class promotion to thursday since the students will all be able to be back on that day student grade update this is not so not such great news as we review the dnf reports for students and which is our eligibility report our 8th graders we have 20 students who have ds and f's eight of the students are virtual students 12 are in person 7th grade we have 21 students with ds and s 7 are virtual and 14 are in person in 6th grade we have 26 students 6 virtual and 20 person so teachers and administrators have been meeting our students and calling parents students will lose end of the year privileges which is promotion for 8th graders splash day etc we're also analyzing the nwa map assessment data because they just took a benchmark assessment we really want to see if the grades correlate with the achievement level of where the students are performing again looking at attendance and the frequency of parent communication because these students are students whose teachers have reached out phone calls emails throughout the year so we know it's been a difficult year for students but we're still trying to get to the root cause of and i explained to the students what i meant with them that it's very hard to get an a but it's very easy to get an f because to me that's demonstrating that they're doing absolutely nothing or very minimal and have zeros so we're having serious conversations and all these students will be spoken to at least the sixth and seventh graders about attending summer school and we're also speaking to the kids about next year our mandatory after school tutorial and possible saturday school annual dance residency thank you to our continental foundation our third and fourth graders have participated in this program for 15 plus years we did have to do virtual dance residency last year and um today they came in so we'll be able to actually do in-person assembly so we're excited about that student advisory meetings we worked on reflecting on student advisory this year what they liked and what we can improve on or do differently for next year we've discussed our be kind efforts and every student advisory meeting the kids write on little post-it notes on who they think deserves our ben's spell for the month and this we recognize mr curtis today this afternoon he's definitely our rock star so they presented him with their best bell today we also reviewed our school integrated action plan and spoke about the goals that we have for next year and that helped us foster the conversation about saturday school and retention and bridge and our daily math skills that were implemented we will present two more men's bells at our awards assembly on friday registration update for next school year we are projecting 593 students next year k-8 that's 20 students less than our current enrollment right now of 6 13.

thank foreign all right we moved back into open session can everyone stand for the pledge of allegiance i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all does anybody have anything to add to the agenda okay please have a motion to approve the agenda vivian and doug [Music] yes yes yes we're going to skip item six for now item seven board member code of conduct review uh ashley can you read it for us please all right thank you anybody have anything any questions on the consent agenda nope okay please have a motion to approve the consent agenda motion second lauren vivian yes yes yes yes yes yes right do we have any public comments superintendents report mr gold all right uh first i'll let you know that like next month we will finally have the new board member or board meeting equipment installed there's been anything you order now you can't get anything so it's been a long time backed up but i think the uh the sound system will be installed and uh overhead uh projections so uh we're gonna start by honoring a couple retirees so i'm gonna first call up eileen hastings eileen would you come on up okay this is be very careful because this is uh these are separate pieces here i'm gonna i'm gonna i'm gonna hold it and then i'll give it to you in a box but i wanna know uh from you if uh 30 years a big hollow right so i was thinking about this today when i uh 30 years ago tell me what big hollow looked like the little schoolhouse in the country on route 12 and 134 and uh there was no jewel across the street it's just open land and it was a great place to be yeah so you've seen a lot of changes in 30 years thank you for all your service and your time with us and is there anything you want to share with anybody no i just just want to say thank you and it's been a great 30 years awesome happy that i could be part of this community awesome thank you can i get a picture of you guys okay awesome thank you so much congratulations congratulations here's a box if you want to enjoy your retirement all right you want this box i mean just in case thank you okay robin jensen [Applause] robin's 20 years and uh so i got you know that last month there a lot of uh robin's colleagues nominated her for employee of the month and she told them that they after they nominated her uh they had to send me an email and said we you can't select her because she'll be mad at us if you select her so but you know i highlighted some things uh you know that they wrote about her she's dedicated loyal passionate and will put others before herself she's a champion for students easily forms bonds and builds relationships with students there's an aura of mutual respect between her and students whether it's in the classroom on the volleyball court or just in the hallway she's unknowingly a mentor from many teachers here big hollow and i have to tell you a funny story i've never mentioned this to robin but when i first when i first got hired a big hollow i i obviously didn't know anybody here not as you know i'm going to say okay i didn't know anybody here i came in first of june right after school was out and i started coming in i walked in the office first day and i didn't know anybody and i think robin was in the office and she was in there regularly just sitting out front and i didn't know who who she was or what she did i think she now that i know her well i think she was just kind of testing out seeing who this new guy was that was coming in big hollow but i don't know was that what you were doing that's what i thought she's very protective of big hollows so she didn't want somebody coming in is going to screw things up okay so now that i know her well enough i figured that's probably what she was doing in the office because i was like who is this person in the front of the office who doesn't work in the office and why is she here but now i know thank you anything you'd like to share but she didn't really did not want to come tonight so i talked her into it but okay anything you want to share no okay that's okay can we get a picture at least thank you [Applause] okay thank you robin appreciate it thank you i don't know if i turn that off or on mata okay so i hit a button on there so i don't know if it's on okay okay is brian here yet okay we're going to next step up uh michelle dr hetchevitz or i'm sorry dr king is going to do nba map updates so she's got a presentation for you while she's getting started board i this was a suggestion of one of our committees come on up it's fine you'll notice there's the board policies are linked to every uh agenda items that have board policies related i've tried to put line them up not every item has a board policy but if there's anything related to it okay well good evening thank you for allowing me some time to go over the map growth data with you i have a clicker oh so tonight i'm going to share with you information from our administration of the map assessment both from the fall to spring so we can look at our map growth data over time and i'm also going to share with you our seven year cohort data and talk about some of how these data are influencing our current work and influencing the future work that we have on our roadmap for the district so the first table i'm going to talk about is looking at our our fall to spring growth and comparison data and as i shared at our october board meeting despite us starting the school year in full remote in august and september we were able to test almost 100 of our student population and so that gave us really strong baseline data for how our students were going to do throughout the year and results from those data um indicated that we're only slightly a slight decline compared to how our students typically perform due to like summer regression information um usually there's a summer slide and we compare we we started the year very similar to previously years and in a similar way our spring data also indicate some similar trends and these data are in your board packet on pages one and two of the board report i provided for you if it's just easier for you to look in your board packet so these tables they illustrate grade level average writ information from fall to spring compared to typical fall to spring growth that occurs at grade levels that are operating at the 50th percentile so for example i'm going to click here we can see that at the national rate 188.2 is the typical writ like the average rate for the nation for third grade and we can see that when we look at the typical growth of those students 12.6 rip points is expected so when we look at our grade level we can see so for example our eighth grader started at 228.2 so our observed growth was 2.2 whereas the average growth is 5.38 so the reason i want to talk about this it's important for us to be able to understand how we operate compared to the nation because that's who our students are going to be competing with when it comes to college and career readiness but it's also important to look at national our local norms and that's something that we do as well but in most cases if a district's fall writ is higher than the national writ our growth is lower and if our starting writ point is lower our growth would be higher and so i'm going to kind of show what that would look like in the case because in this case i'll go back really quick so in this case we can see that we started higher in several instances from our fall to spring so our growth was a little bit less okay so here when we're looking at now for ela this this is going to talk about our fall to spring ela growth and like before if our district where it is lower than the national rate mean our growth should be slightly higher nwea provides like what typical growth should look at look like for students that have similar comparison groups so if we were to take our students and it can take any conditional factors our starting writ the number of instructional week students had the between testing events their grade level achievement it will tell us what the typical growth should be and so i can look at that and we can look at that as a district and we are to determine is our observed growth comparable to what it should be based upon those conditions that we place on it and i'll give you just the overall summation about what these data tell us here in a little bit i'm going to give us our seven-year cohort data and these data are important because we need to know if our instructional delivery models are producing the types of learners that we're hoping to produce over time are they showing a growth that a growth that will not only exceed the national mean which is a 50th percentile which 50th percentile i want to say is just like a bare minimum we want to hit we want to exceed that that bare minimum national percentile are we hitting that in this particular cohort we've taken out the 2020 the spring 2020 growth because we did not have uh we weren't we didn't give them up assessment this time last year we weren't in session due to the pandemic school closures but we can see that students over time are growing but the table i want you to look at pay attention to in your board report it's going to give you information on its table three page three of the board report it will tell you specifically how much students should be growing year over year over year so are we making as much growth oops sorry as our um as our as students at the national level but locally are we okay with this is it enough growth to produce the type of learner that we believe would be college and career ready so they would have access to the types of programs and experiences that i know our families want so for example if we're looking at their reading seven year cohort data we can see that our fifth grade class typically makes 6.4 points of growth in reading from the previous school year to the current year and the reason this looks different from fall to springs is because there's more additional instruction weeks so students have access to different programs versus simply looking at fall to spring results so that's why we looked at spring to spring in these particular data sets i'm going to pause because i've shown you three different tables so far and ask for questions no okay so this final slide it's going to look at our math cohort side by side spring to spring and this is where i i find it interesting because it's allowing us to see how our students their outcome data this particular spring compared to previous springs so we can see in the upper grades that our end of year performance it's mimicking the end-of-year performance from previous years and so sometimes we might say things like well that group of students it was they just had more challenges and that's where this seven-year cohort data that we just talked about would show up this particular data is going to tell us in fact what influences like the influences pandemics will like are pandemic um so the ins the amount of instructional weeks that we had with students face to face versus virtual did it impact the product like the learning mean of our students and we can see at the upper grades there there is very little difference with with how that performed however at the elementary we do see that there was a bigger impact to the overall outcome of students in their their math side by sides and in the same way we saw similar attributes show up for reading and so what i would like to say to this is whether or not our students produced outcome data that are similar to previous years or not so if we're looking at our our middle level to compare to our primary in elementary there are things that we want to do as a district to ensure that we are producing college and career ready students and so we have an mtss prevention framework mtss stands for multi-tiered system of support you might have heard it called like response to intervention and in this we are looking at building level resources to help set up each student for success for academic physical and social emotional and behavioral success and so we're looking at the by looking at the whole child it allows us to have early identification of students who need accelerated programming and students who need enrich interventions in a timely way so that we are ensuring our students are growing above the national mean and growing in such a way that we are ensuring that they're going to be successful at that next grade level so some of the other things that we're doing you're going to hear about our amplify science science does influence our outcome data when it looks at other areas and so that is an important piece of some of the work we're doing the work that dr hetchevitz has been doing with the district related to the regional office of education to help with our standards-based grading and our our progression standards all of that is really important because it feeds our mtss our multi-tiered system of support systems so that we can ensure our students are growing and achieving at high rates and that is all i've got so what questions do you have for me about what i've shared it's very good i think all this data is great yeah i really appreciate the time it took to put this together um i think it's i think it's we all talked about this before we knew the scores were going to drop i think i like how you tried to be optimistic about it but i mean i could appreciate that but looking at it we've had pretty much the lowest scores we've ever had over the past seven years for the most part which is understandable yeah we all talked about that we all knew that yes i'm kind of in years past we've always been above the national red but this year we seem to be below it in over half our grades and especially in fourth grade we're pretty well below it fourth fifth sixth seventh eighth and that national writ that that number didn't change with the pandemic that's a number that is a static number static yeah how is it static i guess meaning that was established using the 2020 norm so the so that is just an established number so it's not that those data won't show up until they the nwea does new norms and that will just be redistributed with a bunch of other means so it may bring down the mean of everybody but yeah mr gold's point is accurate that that didn't change from the nation like so many people will experience that national wreck perhaps is still they didn't reach it i guess we expected honestly i thought it was going to be worse so i'm happy that it's better than i yeah i felt the same i hate to say that i felt the same way i thought the challenge is going to be to see how we balance next year yes yes that'll be that'll be the hopefully this year next year at this time we can see a nice bounce back but uh i i was actually uh as as dr king as as optimistic i was too and i saw it i thought almost obviously concerned when you look at this the uh over time data but um it's better than i thought it could have been and it's a result of just less uh teacher contact time with students i mean i don't think it's an impact i don't think it's a this is not a uh and you could see the work that's been done and the changes that have been done and how it's positively affected i mean yeah in spring in 19 we seem to have our best year ever yeah too um and then it's i just hope that's not lost yeah so okay question on the numbers here was there any analysis done to like pull out outliers to see if there's maybe a small group that's really pulling the numbers down or anything like that or was this just smooth across everybody so i this data are just the smooth across and so yes we i am looking at because i'm looking at accelerated placement and so to do that i'm pulling off like the top 95th percentile and above and i'm looking at the like though that specific group of students in both math and ela and we i can act just in that alone so to answer your question there are yes other indicators but those specifically because i'm doing so much work right now on that i can actually see where that the looking at the growth actually they're outperforming some of those 95th and above are over performing than they have in the past i believe that group is actually what's pulling our numbers higher and which is interesting because a lot of people believe that that 95th percentile and above your growth is going to be small and in fact i'm seeing it quite the opposite and so i'm trying to figure out i'm trying to do a little digging of why is that where did they take the test trying to understand that setting and that's particularly at the the middle school level where i'm doing that the most digging i have not done as much concentrated work at the lower levels and i can certainly do that for you and provide it to mr gold and he can share that so that's a great question yeah i'd be curious to see like where does the middle group change the lower group where where are the bigger changes it could be the lower group could have also stayed pretty much the same maybe it's the middle that's lower than it was before yeah that's a great i can look into that yeah thank you one thing uh for the board because i don't know if i've explained this thoroughly yet the grant has not been released yet but we will be getting some a federal grant the it's called the essa 3 this summer and we've already been dr hetrovitz and i've been working on this primarily but we've already been working on how to distribute these funds to address learning loss as as part of it so we've opened positions for some specialist positions so math and a math specialist at the middle school a reading special at the middle school we don't have either position right now we're hoping that will help with some some intervention time and to address some learning loss and then we also are adding another reading specialist i believe that we i can't kindergarten kindergarten yeah kindergarten specialist so um so we're using that some of those funds to maybe uh try to target some assistance in uh some possible learning laws so all right any other questions thank you dr king appreciate it thank you thank you i'm gonna jump off the agenda to uh uh and recognize mr summers so brian come on up all right you weren't late i told i told i told brian 6 45 so he was not late so uh each each month and when you talk i'm happy to speak each month uh when we do this i've i would say consistently each month somebody has nominated brian summers so uh this month i think your whole uh fourth grade team kind of teamed up together and said we we want him to get this and it says a lot coming from your peers we know you do great work and the entire fourth grade team does great work together and they they value what you're what you're doing as well so i'm going to let some of your fourth grade team come up a couple of them and and share a few things so yes well we just wanted to nominate brian you know he got put up uh to do both in person and remote at the same time and he really adapted and jumped right onto it and didn't complain and just in general is just a great teammate to have and a positive person to have on our team really great at building those connections with the kids that last a really long time and making learning fun for them excellent brian's my classroom neighbor and okay we're good okay yeah he's my classroom neighbor and you know so we worked together last few years and he's always just trying to get to know the kids building those positive relationships and despite all the challenges this year he's still maintained like that awesome way he connects with kids and he has great ideas and shares with our team and is just a positive person to be around and to work with and for the kids and everybody so we just appreciate it yep so we appreciate him awesome thank you so much ryan do you want to say anything too well thank you to both of you and the rest of my team i appreciate it it was a been a crazy year a couple weeks still left but thank you guys too um it's amazing how much work we've put in this year and um yeah so thank you and thank you everyone good good good good well let's let's take a quick picture here with all of us here there's that and come on over here all right thanks a lot thank you for your time thanks a lot thank you okay item c i'm going to jump to is dr hetrovitz is going to uh along with mr payro is going to do uh talk about amplify science uh curriculum grades five through eight i i've got it right here sorry right behind that i hit it i hit it back there thank you so much for making a little time for us to talk to you about the uh science department's resource adoption proposal that you received hopefully a memo about um we i just wanted to kind of preface this by saying that i i have to hand it to the science team um they never once complained um at any point i think ever about their lack of resources or the fact that we were piloting resources in the middle of a pandemic um but you know they really just jumped in wholeheartedly um both feet first and stating back to 2019 is when we started piloting and since then they've just been troopers through the entire process i kind of outlined the steps and the reasoning for you know why we added on an additional resource to pilot this past year it really was just in response to the fact that we didn't want to be adopting a resource in the very middle of a pandemic but also because we had tried two of the initial resources and just kind of wanted to give one more a shot before we made any final decisions but mr payro was generous enough with his time tonight to talk to you a little bit about the fun stuff because i think with the amount of memos that you all receive um you know usually i think those are tend to be boring and mr payro runs a very fun classroom and he was willing tonight to talk to you about amplify which is the resource that we are um recommending for adoption can i can i put this in my pocket is that gonna that work anyways all right hi hi my name is adrian payro i've had your son you know me so um but so we did amplify this year we probably pi this is our third pilot we did uh iquest in the fall and then of course when when covet hit we did um carolina um and so covet we all think kobe's crazy but it's actually blessing in disguise because we were able to come up with amplify so what i kind of want to do is kind of run through a lesson the perfect the perfect part about amplify is all the work's done um which is great because i'll be honest with you i spent nights and nights and weekends building other stuff because of how kids work and how how they how what doesn't work and so when we got amplified it's all on a platform it also has all the google slides done and that's what my exciting thing and of course then i get to add my own little flare with it so it's broken down a bunch of different lessons but uh what we did as a sixth grade we actually did a microbiome lesson which is actually really cool um because it's just it was just just a different way to look at it and what's beautiful about uh amplify it gives a different lens i don't sit there and talk i know i have an awesome i always tell i sound like an angel everybody's like oh i love hearing your voice but i get tired of talking but the kids can do a lot of talking and so it really starts off with um the lens of a scientist you become they give a certain type of role for the students in this case and the first one is a research student you become the students become a research student student researchers for the micro research institute and the best part is this is all integrated into the powerpoint so if i keep going here there's actually a video dr nathan art here's a video that we take and the whole story is is that they want to take away research for a microbiome um that the little things don't matter the big thing so this is doc or this is senator naismith or mr naismith he's not a center yet um he wants to take away all the research for the little tiny things uh like like microbiome because germs just make us sick i want big things roads and buildings which is great now it's funny because kids like when i talk what's your reaction because this guy is an idiot and i said why he goes well because germs are important i said why and the best part is this colvit hit this is the perfect time to do covet because they already associate what we did and so what what is amazing about this is that it opened up so many questions and it was so cool to watch these kids grow with it um and so we go on and they get researcher roles um we always have we have a unit question there are 11 i had uh in this case we had a a jump start there's i think there's four how many i think it's like four four units but we have a giant overarching unit and this one is how how could having 100 trillion microorganisms on the human body keep us healthy and we just kind of talk about what's the difference it brings in the vocabulary it builds on vocabulary it builds on discussion questions and kind of there's a there's a means to an end so i just want to go we all the pictures and what organisms are i'm trying to go through this quick we have our vocabulary scale um but what's really cool it offers everything it's for you know ell it has spanish you can turn all the reading spanish for me i'm an auditory guy i love to be able to listen it has a lady who reads all the stories to them and we talk dr king was talking about nwa this i've seen a growth in kids of reading and writing that i haven't seen before because encompasses it encompasses that reading aspect into what they're learning so they're reading an article then they're applying skills what they've learned but not only like the information they regurgitate is how to develop a claim how to define evidence and how to support your evidence and and that's what's been really cool so of course i go through here and then we look at this and what's my favorite kid's like oh gross eyelash my thought but it sparks these and i like i don't know if you can see me underneath my mask i know it's camouflage it's hard to see i'm actually smiling because i get so excited because these kids get so jacked up about this that it's just so exciting and and this is the first i've been teaching this is my what sixteenth year and this is the first time i've been really excited about a curriculum and let's face it when teachers are excited kids are going to be excited when teachers don't want to do it kids are not going to do it and so i love teaching this i've had a great time teaching and i'm so proud of because we just started summative today so we've talked about kind of everything or we did something about last week what's today monday we did that on thursday excuse me um so once again we go here we go here and they have some sort of quick way it could be understanding a role of organism play and health and human body we discuss then they take what we've discussed questions they develop and put in some sort of writing so there's writing there's vocabulary and there's also a so what's great about this is they can click on here and it brings them right to the platform there's no jumping button they click on it brings the platform they do it then they submit it it's all right there and then we talked about here's where we ran into the trouble spent a lot of time with the kids that are are high that were remote let's face it science does not work remote you don't get the hands-on stuff but for me i was able to uh kind of manipulate stuff but then i realized like we were going to we finally got our boxes and realized that all the stuff was there but the coolest part is is they actually have a youtube channel every single lesson that i teach is online meaning any student that was missing or couldn't do that so we had hands-on stuff all i need to do is make the tool that they use and i just hey guys i love you i love what you're doing i want you to hit play you're going to listen to her and i'm going to teach them so they were able to listen and they were able to do their stuff by following the young lady that's on there and it's not a robot it's not a robot that talks like this it's actually a lady who has a very nice much nicer voice than me um so and they're able to sort and you have the exploring tools there's tools everything like that tiny breadcrumbs there's videos i think i'm going through this quick and then of course use the key characteristics and this all builds up so we start with key first key character we have 11 key characteristics and they keep getting harder and harder but the kids keep going but they all connect to each other and of course at the end they have some sort of reflection of dragon order from scale big to small things like that and then of course there's homework so some of the students don't like the homework let's just face it we all don't like homework but the homework to me is actually it's much more engaging because it's only five minutes it's not 15 minutes not half an hour not 45 it's five minutes kids can get down and students get done in class and they reflect and then they hit that submit button um so i as you know what i'm excited about and i really i really really really am excited about this and like i said i know i talked fast does anybody have anything to clarify the student work is a lot of it's online so they're submitting it to you online all online it's all like they do have a hard copy there is a they they built the website where you can actually download and you can you can uh you can print out everything um so there's that that aspect and then it's also i can send individual lessons so let's say i don't want i don't want to do i just want to do the homework i can actually push out the google classroom where the kids it just brings a link they can click on it and just go straight to there i did a summative where i just wanted to answer one question i only assigned that one question it's pretty easy to navigate students seem to like it i know sixth graders you know i'd like to say that my kids did really well um i also you know i'm a nerd when it comes to all this stuff so i was super excited and had the kids running up and jumping around and the worst part is not working together that was the hardest part but i think with when whole the whole whole culvert thing ends when they're able to have this discussion i'm really looking forward to just how it goes so anybody have any questions i want to share one thing with the board because typically um when we do an adoption we would we would meet with the board curriculum committee before even taking the first step to this board the issue this time was um with the change over and board last this last month and new committees we want to wait i want to wait till we got that switch done and but we couldn't wait till next month's do first reading because we've got two readings that'd be july we want to get stuff ordered and everything's set up for august so we chose to have the first reading now we're going to have a curriculum committee meeting soon and we'll kind of go into more detail the curriculum committee and then if if it all works out then the second readings when this would be approved so that's it's a little different how we normally do it but that's why love your enthusiasm yeah still excited about it but no it's fun yes no it's great i think it's great awesome um work did everyone on the committee feel the same way you do oh yeah i i would yeah i would say i mean there's it's what it excuse me uh what is it's different flair it's different styles so some people teach differently than i teach it's just really teacher preference and that's the best part about you can kind of adapt it we don't say this is the end-all be-all we do have come to find out amplify has a phenomenal customer service as in like you type it in and they fix it right away and we had a meeting with one of the reps and they showed us some other hands-on stuff um michael so we just did i should have brought one but i i didn't we actually did we built a culture uh today so we built we're growing bacteria and kids are doing it you know on the desk things like that so we're going to see how well our cleaning crew does with that um but so that that's that one of those outreach program of course it's really hard especially with microbiomes you can't send stuff home so my my i want to be clear because i mentioned about being online i don't want i guess explain that the the student work is online but there's a lot of hands-on that happens in the classroom there's tons a lot of hands-on depending on what you do okay so i know the eighth grade has forces of motion there's a lot more to do microbiomes is different because it's all microscopic um so something i would do looking at if we do adopt this is what can i do i mean microsoft there's a lot microscopes do like that but a lot of it's discussion and that's the real key is but it's it's deeper level thinking discussions where kids can actually think like a scientist not not like a sixth grader like like a scientist like okay why why because my goal ultimately as a teacher is just do this okay have a discussion and what i've been seeing is the confidence i'm like well i disagree i'm like yes the words so that's that's kind of the cool thing is i've seen them really um you know really really take ownership and that's what i want you know i want to be able to my ultimate goal is to sit back not sit at my desk but lean up against the walls okay let's have a conversation and watch them because that's ultimate learning is when kids kids take ownership and they start doing it themselves i know eighth grade worked they really worked on owning like the student it was more student-led i know miss hagan both mr gorlick were kind of support but the ultimate goal is for them to do it as well so yeah good i would want your closer back oh do you need the mic um speaking of the committee um so we did a survey and we had seven out of eight teachers complete the survey um and we were around like what did i say seven out of eight so five out of seven were totally on board and so we did meet with a couple teachers that had some questions and some reservations and their questions were mostly related to the amount of hands-on it depends on the unit so for example if we're talking about forces in motion the teachers were concerned that there wasn't going to be a human aspect and the ability to manipulate and to have those hands-on experiences but what we learned actually when we did the last meeting with the reps is there's a there's something called flex tensions that are offered so if a teacher is feeling like that that they would like some more hands-on their and this was a response from the company actually they created an extra set of um experiments hands-on activities that you can implement as a teacher so i think that helped um two of our teachers who are just having some questions about it help them feel a little bit more comfortable and um as a science team and i'll say this about any curricular area we're always going to be looking at what's available through the resource and what we need to do to supplement to make sure we're addressing the you know next generation science standards for in this example so our discussions with our plc over the next few years are going to be very involving in terms of you know is this what's best for kids this is what's being offered in amplify do you need something else to make this the way you want it to go with that um is especially going in junior high going across the cross cat there's a lot of ela we talk about annotating and things like that so that was the one thing i found with this one that's not that's different than all the other one is it brings in a lot more ela um bringing in like okay uh claim evidence reasoning what they use the same thing when reading uh non-fiction text romero was showing me the scaffold it supports for the writing process and again as mr pero said claim evidence reasoning they hear that in social studies they hear that in ela and now they're going to get a triple dose in science so in terms of reading and writing it's it's hopefully going to address some of the you know curricular areas that we we want to continue supporting to as well as the sciences so anything else i just wanted to publicly say thanks to mr payro again for donating his time and if you have any questions we're here to take them but thank you for your time too does the package you want to buy include everything yes the only thing it won't include are some of the very cheap consumables like plastic baggies that you know teachers might need or the little plastic petri dishes that are reusable are not reusable they're um consumable yeah so just things like that cotton balls i mean but it gets everything even the papers come with it so all the cards that we all student use which is funny because we just found them i think we i found them like dang it you already did it but we just found it um and they're great because i was cutting stuff out so they have everything but yeah it's more of the consumables that's about it how does that work if the teacher wants an extension so i can assign them um there's also some aspects where you can even go deeper level so if i have a more of a gifted student there's there's flex extensions that go farther into like you know a study that a student wants to do so i can send that out to them but i always like i said the coolest part is is the uh mr perry i need some help right here i want to watch this video and able to share the entire lesson with them and this goes on i think we have a discussion about what happens if kids are sick now there's no excuse they don't they don't miss uh even with substitutes we're not an iep meeting i usually have to set back there's no more busy work it's all okay we're going to do here's a science lab even the substitutes even i've had substitutes and they go this is so nice because all i do is have to to do the discussion the lady teaches it um and then i just leave the discussion so it works well and so now we have we don't have those missing days where if i you know i'm sick my kids are sick or i have iap meetings where i can just say okay you're gonna watch all these youtube videos and then have a discussion is the customer service support like limited at all is it unlimited it's it's on i believe it's unlimited it's a chat um i know that miss wolfe ramske was having an issue with a student um not being in she was able to hit there's a little bubble says how can i help you and you type in hey i need this and boom it was done it was done within five minutes um and then the amplify reps are phenomenal um they answer all our questions they've showed a lot of stuff and what what i realized they're constantly updating we talk about the flex extension one of the issues that people are having is like it's not hands-on and so they actually listen because it's always updating they're always creating more stuff and with it being online because i know when we did carolina carolina was a lot of hands-on stuff but it was textbooks it was this so the updating was a little bit harder for us to do but with amplify you know they're they're on there we've had a meeting with her the other day um yeah they do office hours so i can call and we got emails and stuff like that but it's awesome i really really enjoy i i'm personally excited i'm an excitable guy anyways but oh they like it for the most part some some it's too hard like well it's mostly it's supposed to be rigorous that's the point but what's great and i always tell my students is you can mess up you're allowed to mess up i said here's the thing if you ca and god really if you can if you have a claim that you make and you can support with evidence that's what science is you're constantly redoing your claim when you learn more things and it's amazing to see the students where they'll make a claim but then they'll change because i found more evidence what's even better is their summatives i have kids going back to the article that we read like three weeks ago and bringing stuff in and they've learned how to and like that's where that's where for me as a teacher i'm like i'm proud because they're going back can i use something like i'm not going to stop you from using evidence you find it you just make sure you give me a good reason and that's what's cool and you see a lot you know some of the students there's an issue with some students that just struggle um there's it is heavy it's reading uh we do have you know it's more when students are we had a lot more i'll be honest we had a lot more trouble with the the remote students because they didn't get me um because they're online um but getting kids in showing them how to work because i've had students online or students in class how do i do this okay check oh you can do that and you can annotate and like oh it's so easy so yeah the only complaint i saw because we did student surveys and the only complaint i saw was the homework yeah it is web-based no no i was always that's one of my biggest concerns but here's a good thing is that it you can also print it all off so if it ever goes down um but us teachers think on the fly so it's like oh it doesn't work sweet let's do something else so yeah so it does and like i said it does you have to adapt it to your teaching style i do paradex if you've ever done a paradigm it's an interactive slideshow and get kids voting and gets good but my favorite is oh it's gross we stopped looking at it i'm like take a look at this guys what do you notice but no so thank you very much thank you appreciate it appreciate it all right can i please have a motion to approve on first reading the adoption of amplify science curriculum for grades five through eight second go one more yes yes so for the next month we those materials are now available for anybody that wants to see them from the public if they want to analyze analyze what we're looking at adapting for kids and this will be implemented this fall yeah okay yep isp resolutions okay so uh vivian is currently our isb resolutions representative i don't know if that's gonna if you want that to continue baby you've been that since i've been here so i know it's only continue yes that's fine um we've never we've never submitted a resolution uh this is viv do you want to explain the process a little bit we have ashley and gary that are new um how this works or do you want me to so every year at the yearly conference we have a meeting and we vote on resolutions that other districts bring forth for isb to go to the state level and lobby for us as a school board members so what happens is you use your board policies to guide your work in the district so when you find policies that do not meet your i don't know what you want to do then you can propose changes to those policies at the state level because everything is governed by usually law somewhere in there so districts run into i don't know roadblocks because the policies don't work for them so you can propose changes and so that's what the resolutions are so you can write up a resolution we go we meet you can defend your resolution at the um at our annual meeting and then we take a vote there yes or no if we want uh iasb to go and lobby on our behalf to make changes to board policies because everybody's the hot one the hot one last couple years was the guns the guns guns was won yeah yeah that was a bad one yeah i think that was the one and when it passes it's not that the law has changed that they're they're going to lobby for the law to change yes what happened after the school shootings downstate schools made a case that police were so far away that they could not get to them in time for them to protect themselves so they were lobbying for teachers to be able to carry weapons at school and so when actually they came with all kinds of evidence about how they clocked how long the sheriff would take from neighboring counties to get to their schools so it's more of a safety thing for the downstate schools so that one didn't do you want to pass how like they come up with all those drafts and then we'll talk about them here yes so we will get a i will get a booklet um from isp with all the resolutions um for us to vote on so we vote here how we want to how we want whoever represents our district to vote at um a convention so they're all over i mean there's everything so it's laws change yes you know society changes i'll get that booklet sometime this summer i think yeah it comes right before conference though yeah not too long yeah yeah yeah i guess august september but it's all board policies anything in our book everybody pretty much has the same policies and they just vary sometimes by the needs of your district so if we ever wanted to make some changes to the law we can write a proposal then we have to go well i would have to go defend us at conference sounds good so i just got this so people are starting to write the resolutions now i just thought i'd put an agenda so we could talk about it if something if there's a big issue i'm guessing there's going to be some coveted issues that come out of all this there's a lot of interesting bills out there right now yeah i saw the one about teachers can just walk out their rooms they just passed the committee yeah yeah they can yeah they can literally just walk out one one that uh they're trying to get through right now is that the state in any kind of a it's kind of a year too late but they're saying like any kind of pandemic that the state's idph would be responsible for making the decision whether schools were open or not rather than leaving it to every district so there's stuff like that that's out there there's a lot of crazy bills out there right now so so some of the i imagine there'll be some resolutions that come out of the bills then but and have you heard anything about the consolid school consolidation one yeah one made it through yeah they're gonna uh there's one bill that was i think it's kind of lost some steam but forcing 25 percent consolidation for elementary districts and high school districts so that's in that's out there there's a lot of there's a lot of crazy stuff out there right now but it'll we'll see in the next few weeks where that pans out but anyway i want to get this out in front of you i don't have any big issues that i have on my plate that i think we need to write up a resolution but i just want you to be aware of it last two items on my report are summer office hours um seven to four monday through thursday we actually our staff's here until 4 30 but if we put 4 30 then we have people showing up right before they're ready to leave so we put four they'll be here to close it up and then 7 to 11 fridays 8th grade graduation i encourage you as a board if you can come that night all of you we have plenty of room we can park as many we have plenty of room in there the one reason i want to encourage you is that this is uh the second year we've done it at the drive-in and i want to get your thoughts on what you think after this year this will be a little more normal here and it won't be as tight as it was last year and the because pandemic was just starting we were you know people pretty well confined it'll be more of like an event this time so it'll be interesting to see how it goes and uh i'm excited for it and i would just like to get some feedback at the board like you know what we want to do in the future uh we want to bring it back to an in-person uh formal ceremony we want to keep it as like a graduation event so i encourage you if you're available come that night um we're opening at 5 30 but you don't necessarily have to come that early but uh it won't start until dusk so probably around 8 15.

good evening nhs candidates and numbers on behalf of alberta mr grant and myself it's an honor and privilege to have you in attendance with us tonight in a school year that's been like any other you've gone above and beyond to ensure that the pillars of nhs were and continue to be embedded into the school community we hope all of you are proud of your accomplishments because we would like to thank principal shores [Applause] now i'd like to turn it to our nhs officers who will speak to each of the pillars good evening everyone first of all i would like to congratulate you on not only doing incredibly well academically this year but doing so especially given the circumstances i know we have not been able to meet in the way we would have liked but i'm so happy that each of you were able to make it here this year all of you have shown great character but i know that character can have a variety of different meanings here at dgn we pride ourselves on being respectful responsible and engaged which obviously i'm sure all of you know not only have you demonstrated these qualities both inside and outside the classroom we go for diligently to better yourselves and our community in the face of this year's adversity you all have chosen to spend your time supporting and empowering those around you each of you has maintained the utmost integrity and have actively chosen to maintain a quality work ethic every day we choose our outlook on life and our actions every day you chose to better yourselves and hold yourself to the utmost standards it is your character and everyday actions that have brought you here tonight good evening sir in its simplest definition service is the action of helping or doing work for someone but it's so much more than that service is showing people kindness and a time of need service is going out of your way to help others it's using your strengths to make a genuine impact on someone's life marred by the pandemic this past year was a year of chaos disorder and disappointment yet it was also a year of growth unity and hope in serving our community we've been able to take one of the most difficult years and make it something to reflect on with pride knowing that we've truly made an impact on those around us well service has long been a pillar of the national honor society this year more than ever it's been important to be there for every member of our community i'm extremely proud of the commitment to service that all of you have made whether it's helping out at middle school with middle school orchestra students raking your neighbor's lawn bell ringing outside of fry's electronics in the frigid cold or participating in the lyman woods cleanup event you all have bettered your community through your acts of service i'm confident that you will continue to value service in the future using your many talents and gifts to make the positive changes in our world another key trait that you all demonstrate is leadership but to me being a leader isn't something that's easy to come by you're a leader not because of what not because you want to but because your actions prove that you're worthy to follow you all embody this pillar to the highest degree whether that's in the classroom athletics or anywhere else all of you have taken it upon yourselves to be the exemplar in whatever field you're in that may be speaking up first when your teacher asks asks a question or heading a club or team you're all leaders not because of what opportunities you have been given but because you have taken those opportunities and ran with them that being said this leadership will take many forms throughout your time as a member of the national honor society that may be creating new opportunities for service in the community engaging and teaching your peers or possibly even taking up the task of becoming an officer no matter where you find yourself though i challenge you to strive to keep up the same dedication and passion that you have put into all other parts of your life so far bring that same drive that you have towards your favorite extracurricular and use your knowledge and expertise as a leader to create you all persevered and adapted your style of learning to continue attaining your personal and academic goals what has set you apart from your peers this year is that you have put in the work to truly grasp the content you are learning and be an active learner in class even in a remote setting this includes asking questions in class staying up late to study for that one exam or just being the first throughout the rest of your life being a member of nhs means that you not only carry these qualities in yourselves but you must also encourage character leadership service and scholarship within your everyone is seated i'll begin the nhs induction pledge i'll ask all of you to repeat the lines after i say them to your best extent i pledge to uphold the high purposes of the national honor society to which i have been selected i will be true to the principles for which it stands and will maintain and encourage high standards of leadership scholarship service and character i pledge to maintain high scholastic standing to endeavor intelligently and courageously to be a leader to give of myself freely in service to others and to hold as fundamental and worthy welcome to the national honor society good evening so i am honored to close our distinguished ceremony tonight and i have to say first of all it feels so good to be with all of you in person and for those of you who are watching the recording whether you're a student who couldn't be with us tonight or a family member who we couldn't invite due to space limitations i'm just glad that you have the opportunity to view the ceremony and so a shout out to our tech crew for recording and for mr grant so thank you very much so while our officers did a fantastic job of explaining the four pillars of the national honor society i also wanted to share a few thoughts scholarship is probably what most people associate first with the national honor society and it's certainly true that all the students being inducted tonight are wonderful scholars they've excelled in their classes and should be proud of their accomplishments especially during a very challenging year of different learning environments thank you students for all of your hard work in your classes certainly your efforts will influence your future success but your commitment to academics has also benefited both the students and the teachers in your classes at north i think it is safe to say that our classes are richer because of you our community is also better because of your volunteer work i enjoyed seeing the pictures at the beginning of the show and hearing about your many service projects i am especially grateful that you supported those in need through food drives raising money for the salvation army creating hug bags for our frontline workers or providing tutoring to students at north and even to students at our feeder schools thank you for continuing to prioritize service even in the middle of a pandemic and for finding creative safe ways to positively positively impact our community and show that you care i hope that your commitment to serving others will continue long after you leave north high school character we talk a lot about character at north and as jane said think about our positively north model be respectful responsible and engaged certainly each of you embodies these characteristics however you've also gone above and beyond those expectations you have demonstrated resilience and perseverance you have shown compassion not only in your service projects but also in your daily actions you are kind it is said that a person's true character is shown during challenging times well we've certainly experienced challenging times lately thank you for modeling how to respond and for staying true to your values even when it is not easy and that brings me to the last pillar leadership is an interesting concept because there are so many different types of leaders while we definitely need those who are leaders by title captains presidents officers principals more importantly we need people who lead without titles we need people who lead by example and who lead in order to empower others instead of for personal glory recent events and debates in our country demonstrate this need and i am proud to say that our students have stepped up and shown that they are leaders they have realized they have a voice and they feel empowered to share that voice students no matter what your political views are or whether you have the personality to be front and center and commanding others or someone who is more comfortable directing quietly from the back i urge you to continue to be a leader you can make a positive difference and we need you before we end i would like to take a minute to to thank the people who made this night possible first of all can we have a round of applause for our three nhs sponsors mr grant mr bodenheimer i miss for it i want to thank them for all the time they put into national honor society and also to all the current members and our officers for the time that they dedicated to the selection process and planning the evening parents and guardians even though you're not with us here tonight i want to take a minute to thank you for the support of your children throughout the years no doubt you played many roles during this journey cheerleader disciplinarian counselor tutor and probably countless others you are appreciated and finally i would like to thank our teachers many of whom would usually be with us at the induction ceremony for all that they have done to help shape our nhs inductees tonight they dedicate countless hours to not only teaching content but also to inspiring students and helping them grow it has been a true pleasure to be with you tonight students i wish you the best whether you are returning to north high next year or are graduating and will be on to the next chapter of your life i am proud to know you this concludes our ceremony have a great evening and a wonderful end to the school year [Applause] you

hmm [Music] i call to order the oswego community unit school district 308 board of education meeting can i have a roll call mrs doyle president mr gatewood president mrs johnson president mrs croner dr marino present mrs simonton present mrs swanson present agenda item 3.2 pledge of allegiance i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and this is republic for which it stands one nation undergrad indivisible with liberty and justice for all item 4.1 public comment on behalf of the board of education i would like to thank the public for attending tonight's meeting we value the feedback we receive from our residents and encourage everyone to take an active interest in their public school system residents interested in speaking to the board this evening are asked to have completed a comment card and presented it to the secretary to the board when the secretary calls your name i ask that you come to the microphone state your name for the public record and provide your feedback please note that comments are limited to five minutes per person and that no discussion of personnel matters or responses to questions are permitted we'll limit the comments to three per subject the board does not participate in discussion during public comment follow up to your questions or concerns will be addressed by administration through the contact information provided on the comment card cindy book submitted a comment by email okay will the covid19 vaccine be required for students in order for them to attend in-person school in the fall if this has not yet been decided can you direct concerned parents to the governing body who would is responsible for making this decision so they can have their concerns heard before a decision is made thank you crystal casper my name is crystal casper and my son's a freshman at oe tonight i came here to speak on behalf of my own family and thousands of parents who couldn't be here i will never stop fighting for our children and will continue to be vocal until we are finally hurt with the new board present i'd like to make a statement so it's loud and clear from the start the district has failed our children parents should not have to beg and plea to simply have their children attend in-person instruction children belong in the classroom five full days a week i understand there was a pandemic that forced us to shut down but the shutdown should have been temporary instead it turned into losing most of the year when the updated guidelines from the isbe came out in march that loosened restrictions we finally had a glimmer of hope many emails were written to the board and dr sparlin hoping our kids could have gotten more in-person learning but we were quickly shut down by the board and told no more changes this has left us wondering if there really was ever a plan to reopen the schools while other schools seem to quickly adapt to the new challenges and guidelines or new changes and guidelines sd-30 sd-308 did nothing and continue to fail our children i'm sure you're all aware of current news regarding local teachers unions fighting to keep schools closed i certainly hope this isn't the case with our district unfortunately with the current in-person instruction that is being offered to our children in my opinion this remains a questionable subject it is our hope that the new board address these issues and work to restore the trust of the community we ask while we ask is simply to show us that you care about our children and we will and we will do the best for them we pay some of the highest real estate taxes in the state of illinois yet our district is dangerously underfunded there have been an extreme mismanagement of money in the district and it continues to negatively impact our children while raises are being dished out programs and services are being cut after reviewing the audited 2019 and 2020 finance 2020 financials myself because i'm an accountant it has come to my attention that we are over budget on salaries alone by 7 million the outcome is grim if we continue to pay for things we can't afford i encourage all parents of sd 308 to get more involved it is past time the board and school district are held accountable for their actions we demand transparency and honest discussions in order to address these situations and fix this horrible mess my son told me last night that he wanted to finish the year remotely because school is not fun i asked him why and he said no one talks to each other you can't hear people speak in class because of the math he said it's no different than being home because they are literally sitting at their desks in school on their chromebook interacting with people that way what is the point of being in school if this is how it's going to be we are doing so much damage to our children's social and emotional health they need to interact with peers i honestly miss seeing them smile and laugh giving hugs high fives going to sporting events having fun i miss seeing them happy you know in conclusion you know i received several emails from the district stating school's going to be full time next year sadly i have no faith in you guys but you you'll do that and even if it does happen what restrictions will our children be subject to this time i i implore you to prove us wrong our kids deserve better thank you for your time thank you agenda item 5.1 board member comments well i have a comment i wanted to say hello to everyone and um i wrote it down because i knew i wouldn't be able to to say it all uh it's hard for me to believe that i've been your board president for a week now um if you would have told me a year ago that i would be serving as the president of the school board i would have told you that you're nuts i'm truly honored that my colleagues see so much potential in me and i'm honored to be serving with this amazing group of board members i know that we can do great things together there's never been a board like this before i i'm touched to be so welcomed into the community of those who have served before me and i want to thank the members of our larger community those that voted for me and those that didn't because representing all of our community and all of our students is important to me i think knowing a person's why is very important to understanding their motive to help so i'd like to share mine with you when i lost my father in the world trade center in 9 11 i made a conscious choice rather than to sit and anger and hate that i would choose to make a positive difference in the world in equal magnitude to the hate we saw that day and in doing so i would live a life that honored my father my decision since then to work with children in foster care to help raise a family that stands up for others and to help leaders be the best has all been an extension of that and now serving on the school board so here is my promise to all of you our community our students the administration and my fellow board members i promise to do my best to listen to be compassionate and to move forward a strategic agenda for the betterment of our entire community and all of our students i know i will not be perfect but my heart will always be in the right place and i want to thank you for your faith and trust and for you to know that i do not take it lightly thank you dr moreno i would like to say a few things i just wanted to take the opportunity to thank mr lightfoot mrs morgan and mr bauman for their service and also to recognize mrs croner mrs swanson and mrs doyle for their service as well through a pandemic no one prepares you to lead a school district through a pandemic there's no manual there's no book and getting to know each of you i've learned that you did the very best with what you had at the time so thank you for your commitment to our students i would also like to thank dr sparlin and miss dalquest because i know they also spent countless nights awake making sure that they did what was best it's very easy to sit on the outside and i had to make a lot of those um comments during uh campaigning and it was hard because judging is easy from the other chair i know you got thousands of emails from the board in the administration you had to answer to a lot of different people all the time and i know you did the best that you can i'm also very excited and very proud to sit on this board of education with two people of color for the first time in our history and i look forward to our board of education representing better our student body so thank you very much okay agenda item 5.2 board committee reports since ruth kroner couldn't be here she gave me her update the equity committee report they finalized their equity statement and are ready to bring this to the board for next steps and the only challenge so far is getting in-person attendance and determining the next mission of the committee they did attempt to meet in person but they did not have a quorum so hopefully in the fall they'll be able to start meeting in person okay 5.3 superintendents report well good evening board tonight we have a heavier agenda under information so i'm going to keep my comments brief as you know last week was teacher appreciation week and tuesday was teacher appreciation day i wanted to take this opportunity to think of our teachers for all their good work that they are doing that are doing so well making a difference in our students lives this past year has been very extremely hard on teachers and our 308 teachers have done an outstanding job and i hope they all know how much we appreciate them and also last week was uh national nurses day and i wanted to publicly thank our nurses for all that they do for our students and staff on a daily basis we have some outstanding nurses here in 308 and being a school nurse is a stressful job but being a school nurse during a pandemic is extremely stressful and they've that they've really stepped up and done a wonderful job and i hope that they know how much uh we all value them as well so uh that's like i said we have a lot of under information so that's my report for this evening thank you okay apologize um sorry the minutes from the previous meeting is that you're approved secretary okay 6.1 can i have a motion to approve the minutes from the previous meeting actually this is the consent agenda so you make a motion for the entire section so it's a motion to approve the consent agenda including 6.1 6.2 6.3 if there were one and it's just one motion all right well thank you um 6.0 approve uh can i have a motion to approve the consent agenda i make a motion to approve all items under consent including 6.1 minutes from the may 3rd 2021 special board of education meeting and 6.2 to acknowledge the freedom of information act requests received by the district second mrs simultan aye dr mourinho aye mr katewood aye mrs swanson aye mrs doyle hi mrs johnson hi item 7.1 is information uh financial statements does the board have any questions in regards to the financial information that's been provided this evening can we just clarify on the year-to-date remember the local property taxes i think we're we've only collected 51 percent that's pretty normal or that's due to covid no that's normal so in may we'll start you probably just got your tax bill over the weekend and it will do june june 6 i believe so we'll start to get payments but okay all right moving on item 7.2 is an informational item regarding the request and release of kendall county land cash funds kendall county land cash fees uh are on the district kendall county collects land cash fees on the behalf of the district for property in unincorporated areas these fees are in lieu of donating land to the district for a new site that would be needed due to increased enrollment caused by any developed property kendall county is holding our balance of land cash in the amount of thirteen thousand four hundred twenty seven dollars in order for us to receive these funds we must submit a request to the regional superintendent of schools along with a resolution stating that the what the purpose of the use of these funds is so does the board have any questions and this is an annual item as well does board have any questions regarding this informational item the only question i have and i think that this is just that we've been doing this for so many years it does say at the title of this attachment to david bailow yeah um i i don't think he has become our regional please forgive me if i have this wrong but i don't believe he's become our regional um superintendent no he is not well this is information and we'll make sure it's corrected and again i don't think that this is anything other than we've been doing this same form for that long all right very good appreciate you bringing that to our attention kristy you've made it out of that thank you all right item 7.3 is student rights and responsibilities section of the handbook 7.3 is another annual item which is the student rising responsibility we have our executive director of student services val patterson vale is going to take us uh through the process what what how where student rights and responsibilities gone through to get to where we're at before the board looks at it for information so val go ahead thank you good evening dr sparlin and board of education the summary of updates and revisions that was provided to you included some background on the rights and responsibilities code it's reviewed annually this year we did this in february and march and the current school year's code was opened up for all administration to provide any concerns questions suggestions revisions and those updates are then reviewed and incorporated once the review hits my office and then also moves over into the board of education attorneys hands so that all of the updates and the changes have been properly vetted to be sure they're in alignment with not only board policy but also state laws and any other uh governing agencies or laws that we need to line up to also the district's parent advisory committee is within a special meeting of the board's policy and legislative committee we held that meeting on march 22nd and we had a draft in place and we're still taking again suggestions or possible updates you can see that in the memo the 2021 parent advisory committee members were listed when you saw an asterisk it meant that they were present at that meeting so they were able to vote also you can see that there were several guests the guests in attendance included our executive director of special education dr denise hildebrand maureen lemon board of education attorney and don samosky director of transportation so that we made sure we could look at sections that included specifically student discipline on buses student discipline of special education students and again we presented our our draft at that point all recommended changes and updates have been legally reviewed and they've been incorporated into this draft that you see for the may 10th this evening's board of education meeting for first reading and then a second reading would be on june 7th for board approval so information and then board approval in june thank you very we appreciate that board are there any questions regarding the updates to the student rights responsibilities portion of the handbook uh just double checking that i've got this right that the main first change seems to be that it won't be in a printed handbook correct that was a budget adjustment for next year any other questions regarding the student rights responsibilities portion of the handbook okay hearing none thank you baylor thank you item 7.4 is in regards to the consolidated grant application and our associate superintendent faith douglas will share what this means why we do it and any questions the board may have so there's a lot of acronyms and a lot of grants and i'm going to try to go through and explain some of those uh it is the season that we do annually for our consolidated district plan and while that opens right now this beginning plan is not about what are we going to spend it on or anything it's assurances that we have put in place so that we can get then access to additional grants so the grants that are covered with the consolidated district plan involve title 1 which is related to our schools that have a higher percentage of students from low-income families not to be confused with title 1 part a which is more about school improvement and those schools are not receiving money because of their percentage of low-income students they're receiving funding because of needing improvement as identified by state test scores and other factors then title two is around professional development and lots of different fundings and some flexibility with that title three is for our language learners and language instruction title four is kind of a catch-all it's safety drug health education there's even gifted enrichment pieces in it then ida which is our special education main grant it's called the ida flow through and then the ida preschool which is for our child early childhood programs and services the numbers that are on the slide right now are not the numbers for next year this is the amount that was received for this school year it does change so we will not yet know what our final allocations will be till till somewhat later into the summer and sometimes even into the fall but once we put this in and is approved then we start getting grant applications for those other pieces so this was just to give you an idea of the types of money that come in through this and then some of the plan requirements that are all listed and ready to go on the illinois state board of education forms we have to show evidence of coordination of those different grants of how they would work together we have to have a needs assessment which we've done with our staff already this fall where we've had them identify what professional development they need we have different stakeholders where we've gone to the teaching and learning committee on pieces around this we have to show alignment with the state goals with what we would like to do and then there are auditing processes that we have to guarantee and then we do need to work with private schools and foster care within the area on this too very short but sweet version of the consolidated district plan that's where all the money comes from for grants correct most of it very good any other questions regarding item 7.4 all right number item 7.5 is the boulder hill school-wide title 1 plan also somewhat related there are two different ways that schools within the title one designation can receive money one is targeted where you really have to use the funds only for students from low-income families or struggling students there's also a version called school-wide and we have two of our schools that we are suggesting moving from targeted to school-wide this allows a lot more flexibility to use resources to help all students within the building it utilizes a lot more flexibility with what you can do with use of staff and it's a very wise thing to do to provide that flexibility so the one caveat is is they have to go through the work to have the school-wide plan and that needs to go to the board so we're doing that for the first time and i apologize for the amount of details that i gave you but i wanted you to see the plans that heather kincaid and lindsay allen and the two school principals and their teams have put together to make this happen this is only information at this particular meeting it'll be at the next meeting that we asked for approval so you'll have some time to digest that very good faith to be eligible for school-wide uh school must have what percentage 40 40 and boulder hills currently about 53 40 of students would be from low-income families may i just add a statement please regarding both of these schools very often when you see school improvement plans or school-wide title 1 plans i appreciate the title being changed to a school-wide title plan rather than school improvement because in no way shape or form would i want to even hint or suggest that either of these schools are anything other than excellent schools they are um and knowing both of these administrators and the diligence of their committees i i feel confident that our students are in good hands with them um and i appreciate that they'll be able to get the extra funding hopefully that they need to serve kids with higher needs thank you or any other questions regarding that item 7.6 is the long beach uh school-wide title one plan same information but this is now for school for long beach correct faith correct any questions regarding 7.6 long beach school by title one plan what percentage is uh long beach i know you said boulder hills at 53 16.

all right shall we stand yep it's all right pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all great okay um so we've got the roll um we've re received the minutes um and did you have a chance to go through them do you have any comments about them or anything they were lovely so i move i move that we accept the minutes i second that we accept the minutes all in favor aye okay we're good all right uh in all earnestness they were really well done they were is it kevin that doesn't or marley kevin is he's a meeting no poet he's i'll take it i'll take it the first and probably last time i'll be ever referenced as a poet so i'll take it well he gets he also gets them out very quickly but thank you um faith we don't have any public comments tonight right um and we have no new business so we can jump right in to our item number four old business um yeah we've had an amendment or a change to a textbook recommendation so marlene if you want to explain that one yeah yeah and i'll also ask leslie pair to chime in as you know we've got a um course that's a dual enrollment with tux tungsten community college and so we sort of take their lead in what textbook we'll be using and so you all heard a little bit about the textbook the last time around but there's been a change they are looking at this book for advanced personal finance so leslie i will let you take it from there um i'm actually really glad that they changed the book this for our students so um it's a college level course but the book that the original book that they were using was very dry and um harder to follow i think our students um that this book is going to be more user-friendly and it covers all the same concepts for our students one of the major reasons why they went from the other textbook to this textbook is price this textbook is only going to cost 80 a book as opposed to two hundred and fourteen dollars a book it's a huge huge price difference and they are purchasing for us so tungsten using their perkins grant money they're purchasing um two two classroom sets um of these books so our expectation is that we'll probably run about two advanced personal finance classes a year so that'll that'll cover us so we won't have to um order them and and have them come out of the cheshire public schools budget great yeah and any questions like i said it covers the um same same material essentially but just in a and then i think it's an easier to read um what a nice and a nicer format so faith i would suggest that we just make make a motion to amend the book title for this course and it does not need to go forward to the full board because it's really a dual enrollment course and with the extenuating circumstances of not having to pay for it etc uh i think we're we're good in that scenario okay great um well ann i will hand it over to you do you want to make the the um motion to accept so moved you got that kevin okay all right so the motion on the table is um acceptance of the personal finance or pfinn um seventh edition by randall billingsley lawrence gibman and michael j jenk um so um do all those in favor looks unanimous thank you very much thank you um okay so that is our action item um now we're moving on to informational items uh here we have it again field trips so um if we could hear the update on um actually what seemed kind of nice uh exciting field trips for the kids yeah i really wanted to let the three of you and you know faith ann and tony know that while we haven't seen a lot of field trips coming forward to the curriculum committee because those are typically your out of state trips your international trips etc you may hear in the community about field trips happening and those field trips are really more team building based and they're local so we've got lots of kids going to camp sloper for team building activities and some science activities as well as some fun trips to lake compounds as well as empower which is again a team building activity sometimes they're coming to the the um elementary schools or the middle school and other time we are traveling to them to do some low ropes courses and things like that so while we haven't done a lot of talking about field trips we are starting to get back into the swing of those and i know we discussed dec washington dc last time but you know i just wanted to make sure people were aware that we're beginning to get back out there again and you may hear about some of those so just a little update for you i've lost ann um so can you just address how many kids typically will go on these trips and what kind of protocols do we have to follow so the the number of kids really depends sometimes it's a class trip sometimes it could be like the sixth grade class doing an end of the year activity where they're going to camp sloper they're still following all the cdc recommendations parents have the option of either driving them over to camp slope or or taking the bus in some circumstances where you know um probably having a few more buses than usual due to keeping kids you know giving them enough space they're they're hand sanitizing they are wearing their masks and for all three of the ones that i mentioned today those are all outdoor so they are not you know in confined spaces okay do you foresee any any um trips to i don't know any museums or any can any indoor trip coming up this year no i've seen none come acro no no requests come across my desk for that these have all been outdoor or park-like activities okay all right ann do you have a question any questions okay um great um next item then would be the cheshire high school school schedule for 21 22 school year and for that we're going to have dr gad fill us in on the work that she and her team including dr reed have done on the high school schedule for next year all right i will present my screen so you can see what it looks like and let me know if you need me to enlarge it a little bit it might be helpful so i will scroll down this is our schedule for next year for in-person learning we are looking at maintaining our 80-minute classes what this allows us to do is in the event students need support time we can split a period let's say a student needs math support and also writing support and they have one study hall it enables us to have a good chunk of time for support for each of those areas it gives us a good solid amount of time that we've really grown to appreciate this year and it also allows us to have four lunch waves we are not sure what next year will bring entirely uh so we want to we want to ensure that we can pivot if we need to um we we know that we'll need to keep students uh separated during lunch obviously it's a maskless time within our lunch waves we currently have some breaks and a study hall within each wave as students need to pass from one class to the next and we need time to clean each area what this also allows for us is a little study time during that period but it also allows us to create an advisory period without disrupting class time by utilizing some of those breaks and shortening each of those peers lunch waves so that we can have one advisory period either at the beginning of actually right at the end of um second period for next year and next year will be a five day a week in per go yeah i knew you were gonna go for it yeah sorry a couple of things mary sure dr gab um one of them is so we don't currently have four lunch waves do we yes yes we do that's to accommodate uh all of the in-person learners the four-day especially in-person learners and that's is that because of covid though that's because it's spacing how many lunch waves did we have pre-covered three oh we did have three okay so we've got four and they're shorter actually they're not shorter we were able to to um really kind of manipulate the time to work if that's that's the other virtue of having the 80 minute period it enables us to to fit a lot of flexibility into the schedule especially given some of the unknowns coming and i think the teachers have um well i know they have i think they've gotten a lot out of the longer periods and students have had time to learn and then apply what they're learning during that during that class time so it's it's been an adjustment but from from the feedback it's it's actually working well for everyone so the second thing i have and it's it's not really a question but i would appreciate any comment that you can give and also dr reed if you want to give me some feedback on what would this how would the schedule be affected if we were to think of um pushing the school's start time for the high school back an hour or ahead an hour whatever whichever yeah start 3 30.

so he wasn't real happy with me because he said he saw the lights way too much and kind of wished he hadn't seen them at all so obviously there's one for touchdown it's kind of a conglomeration of all kinds of stuff if this isn't happening on the front side it's much bigger later on but it's not very much on the front side so i've got numbers so very very cool we're seeing just about everybody that's doing this now it's almost the package that we're selling then i want to show you a couple of pictures you need to answer any questions if you might have them we have with moscow 180 people that work in the area at moscow that takes care of things after the sale is done that means warranty calls turn lights on and off if you call in there's a problem there's somebody there 24 7 taking care of everything i don't think the next three sports lighting companies have a total of 180 employees let alone 180 people taking care of stuff after the sale is made so we do about 75 to 80 on market share this is a picture of a field in nebraska this is from the top the one thing i want to point out is that your neighbors are going to be happy all the light we're sending on this thing is hitting where we want it to hit we are showing light levels on the bleachers on the visitors side that we've showed mr marshall we've also got a fixture that's dedicated to eliminate the radius of the track uh that we've shown mr marshall the the one thing you guys have here which uh we had some contractors here the other day and i don't know if you even heard of you guys but there was two of them that were almost beside himself at how cool your stadium is and the fact that you've got the canopy over the home side so we're not showing light levels there but you've got lights underneath there so the other thing that we want to show you is that if you were to choose to do this later on and later on in life down the road you might have somebody that wanted to try something cool if you put this in and you've got that entertainment system in there is another option that option is rgbw fixtures which stands for red green blue is color there's two options and ways you can do this you can run fixtures up the pole to eliminate the pull and turn the color at the touch of a button you would be able to turn those poles any color you wanted you only get 180 colors you can also put those pictures at more towards the top of the pole and shine them down doesn't make a lot of sense for you guys here because you you've got the canopy but this is something you could do down the road later on if you ever wanted to do something kind of cool if it was cancer awareness you could paint the poles pink for christmas you could paint them green and red if you wanted to so great warranties it's the same picture we get like i said in all the other places kansas state baseball all the kansas state stuff has been done that way um we've been here for 40 years we're not going anywhere question questions it does and if you put if you were to put our poles in we give you a 25 year warranty like i said it's uh if i'm being taped and my boss sees this i'm going to say that you saw it wrong if you were to ask me should we pull our poles out and put new bulbs in um that's a hard one for me to say yes because you've got a lot of weight on your folds we're taking them off we're going to put our fixtures up there you're going to get a 10-year warranty the thousands of dollars you'd spend we're not going to even come close to you make it near the trips to do that if you were to put a brand new system in with new polls as you can expect that warranty is based on something so good question it's based on 400 hours per year um usage um that isn't going to happen not not in my lifetime and yours and coaches here it isn't going to happen so the reality of it is you've probably got fixtures up there that are going to be years and years past that you're setting this up for a long time and in 10 years at the end of 10 years probably at that point because you've got a 10-year warranty what i would expect would happen is um in the past what moscow has done is at nine and a half years somebody will get a phone call they'll call me well it probably will be me be somebody else but somebody else will get a phone call and uh they'll come at least approach you guys and say hey you know this is what we've got going on for x number of dollars if you're interested you can extend your warranty another five years or ten years maybe so the controls uh are going to be all new the wire harnesses running up the pole are all new um i mean it's you're going to be set for long for a long time your kids will think that they are playing at arrowhead versus what you've got now and i'm not beating anything up but the uniformities and the clarity the cool part about led is that i'm not going to bore you with the numbers the whole thing about it but there's a scale that this goes on and the closer we are to 10 000 the more like daylight it is the more the other way the more soft and warm and you reference office lights a lot of classroom lights right now are hiv and that's that's warm oranges yellowish kind of a warmer tone led is uh is much higher up the color scale which means it's bright white clear really really great for for fans players and filming so it's going to have a totally different look than what you've got right now quite other questions for brad what's the difference in the car consumption between the system we have an hour right now i think you've got 12 fixtures up there per pole 14 14.

we originally had summersville for four weeks for five hours four hours a day was a teacher i'm sorry for students by the paper teachers had some challenges and finding teachers that wanted to work that much of their summer so we lent them today and shortened the week so the teachers that we're recommending for math is that find themselves [Music] another study online is olivia garcia english language arts chelly aaron khan that's currently she teaches uh ell study at all casey babu and special education therapy beltrami uh so we're asking the [Music] because reducing this position does not help this is a cte position that may take one period away when you talk to teacher it's uh mr garcia garcia she's not here today um the money button does not help family um [Music] the working conditions talk about if a person submits a reservation retirement by april 15th of the previous year they get a five percent increase in salary for the final year ronaldo [Music] um three changes in food services um [Music] um [Music] is [Music] april 21st um under personnel will be a classified reassignment to fill the position vacated by mr ogden that person will recommend is alejandro ortegan his assistant [Music] and has asked alejandra and robert asked her she wanted to come back initially she said nothing because she likes working with the kids but we have to have the cafeteria going at full speed we have to have not here so available may be a temporary uh um the tenth thing on the personnel long personality this month is approval for professional training uh mrs beltran has done this before i don't think she did last year where she working most of our peripherals work with students with special needs and she wants them to be a ferpa depending on the feminist process uh she wants to be aware of the ramifications of an iep he wants to be aware of how much a child needs to have freedom of removal that someone rides your shoulder so it's um they'll be paid their uh hourly weight 12 15 an hour should get 25 hours a day it's the i believe this is not statistically researched but i believe i saw people perhaps saw that their work was important they also understood their work a little bit better and so i'm um and i've done this a little differently this time just in a very different year normally i would show or i would include the differences between revision but i want to show a whole picture of this year and the effect for the first thing the revenue control limit and that is a combination of two things is the current year avm average data membership times the base support level of the personal amount and plus our transportation bonus we've got to decide this year normally transportation miles are funded during the prior year we have to decide if we wanted to use the prior year might be 1920 which was 21.

so now we did that and i submitted that the very night we you approved it so now the difference is 424 and you like to just have zero differences that means our budget is the exact same for our student account and our factors as the department of education is and the reason was when we came to you on the april 12th meeting we had a 100th day account that's our final account for the year on march 12th of 2066 students now it's 2061 students so those five students reduce that uh that well the increase our difference by 50 000.

our registrations are coming in slowly but surely we currently have 303 officially registered students and we're waiting for some of our kids who are here on open enrollment haven't submitted their requests yet and obviously we have new families moving into the new homes in nevada high dens which we feel will balance out and will be at the same enrollment next year work in progress for next school year so our staff has worked on our school integrated action plan and administration completed the lie act which is the district integrated action plan and you have copies there provided for our board members committee also worked on our two-year strategic plan adding specific measurable goals and now we're doing the alignment between the saya and the strategic plan to ensure action steps that they may be needed to be added let me see what else i shared the draft with student advisory like i mentioned so the draft will be ready in june and ready for rollout in august 2021 teachers are also working this week on developing the theme which is teacher the teacher highly effective needs guide so teachers on this week we have subs covering for teachers to work with mrs cuevas and mr nathan on developing our highly effective needs guide summer conferences and professional development just wanted to list a few of the trainings we'll be attending june 10th and 11th is the aziala's conference that mrs cuevas mr magayanes and i will be attending june 11th is asba virtual summer leadership institute so please make sure you let mrs monica know if you'd like to attend so she can get our board members registered also july 7th through 9th we will be attending the avid digital xp with eight teachers with mrs cuevas myself and mr magnanis and july 21st through 24th is the asbo summer conference at mr marianas will be attending and presenting this year so he's going to be putting some good pr out there for continental so thank you humber transportation administrators are also going to be attending a conference in flagstaff june 21st through the 24th and you see some of the topics that they'll be covering there so again thank you and we will keep calm and carry on and get through the rest of the school year thank you very much [Music] thank you all for being here my name is deanna cuevas i'm the principal here at continental i see many new faces and i want to thank you for your time that you've come out tonight to be a part of our photography so i just want to start with testing updates we have finished our state testing for azm2 which is our state test for third through eighth graders azalea testing has been completed that is a test that is given for our english language learner students science state testing has also been completed our fifth and eighth graders take that test that test was a field test this school year for them to gather data for the state together data so that they can decide how they're going to formulate the test for next spoiler map growth testing is our benchmark test that we used here at our district so we just finished fourth quarter testing multi-state alternate assessments those are to be completed by this friday may 14th and we are just about finished those assessments are done for students who have been identified via their individualized education plans through special education our summer enrichment program will be taking place june 8th through june 30th from 8 to 11 30 monday through fridays kinder jumpstart will be first through the going to have kindred gem start plus first through yes first week but what kinder jumpstart is is it's a way for us to be able to prepare our kindred gardeners our incoming kindergartners with the structure and procedures of what it'll be like when they enter kindergarten for the summer enrichment program from our teachers we ask for referrals so far they've turned in 110 referrals we've had 50 confirmed that they will be attending 12 parents who have responded for various reasons they are not able to have their children attend due to being out of town or some people that are moving 48 follow-up calls to parents are being completed and they will if they do not attend summer enrichment they will be slated to intend after school tutorials that will be taking place and there's no reason as to why they should not be attending after school tutorials since we do provide transportation for their for our students um this superintendent rico mentioned earth day this was a big a big thing for us to do here at continental because we were awarded the 500 grand through the bio birthday rotary we're very thankful for that our students beautified our campus and we're really excited because we have had those planters here for quite some time without any flowers in them so it was a really good thing for us to do and walk around campus and see teacher appreciation we did wrap up last week but we always appreciate our teachers and all of our staff here this week we have our classified staff appreciation week and we'll also be appreciating our nurse orange sports and trooper for all of her hard work through all the school closure and covet 19 mitigation plans that we've been working through many of you i saw picked up our structured immigration action plan which we call the saya our teachers have been working very hard on this these are pictures of the fishbones that we call in regards to coming up with concerns areas of need for our for our side for our school site and through all of that work you end up getting the school integrated action plan so it took takes a lot of time and it's with the work of all a lot of our teachers and our staff some of the primary needs are our teachers need to maintain high academic behavioral and social emotional learning expectations for all students the desired outcomes we will be working towards our teachers will maintain high expectations for all students by utilizing common planning time and professional development time to analyze data to drive and differentiate instruction another is our teachers need to use all available student data to intentionally plan an instruction that supports every student primarily special needs in meeting rigorous learning goals by differentiating the instruction and implementing design for learning that's called udl what that is is a learning template and that's something that we'll be rolling out more and talking about more next school year with our teachers these are outcomes our teachers and leadership will identify and implement curriculum for special needs students and intentionally plan instruction that supports every student our leadership needs to commit to sustaining a culture of high expectation for academic learning and social emotional growth of all students focusing on the most balanced and respectful professional learning community for all staff desired outcomes is leadership will increase teacher effectiveness by setting clear expectations and developing school-wide instructional and operational non-negotiables which we'll be talking about that's something that many of us have had as leadership myself and mr latham who's the director of student services is we need to be very clear which is superintendent people mentioned the high instructional needs guide which we're calling the theme it's a guide that's going to pretty much map out what our game plan is to be successful this coming school year we've been working hard on that we've started today with meeting with our teachers getting feedback and we'll before we break for summer we'll have gone through all of our departments in our school so we can create this guide that will be available uploaded on our school website for our teachers and it will be a clear plan for our parents and students to also be able to see what kind of curriculum we have here on campus what we're utilizing what our curriculum about this and what is the plan because it's important everybody knows so we can work together and be successful together as a community parents need to be aware of school improvement goals and learn how to better assist their students in meeting academic and social emotional standards desired outcomes a yearly calendar will be developed for parents in order for them to plan their involvement understanding curriculum and standards being taught to their children that's key parents do need to know the curriculum that's happening here that we're rolling out they need to also provide us with feedback so we keep the most successful right now we have a new math curriculum that we're going to be rolling out next year and we will also be doing requests for requests for proposals next school year for a possible new reading curriculum having parent feedback and community feedback is highly important so i encourage you to please keep attending our government because you can be part of that are there any questions again i want to thank you all for being here please never hesitate to come and speak to myself or mr lathan we're always here to listen and to learn from each other so thank you thank you recognition of some amazing people [Music] williams um so we would like to present staff recognition to miss dina friedman and schoolias as they retire from the continental elementary school district ms dina friedman has served as an educator for 30 years and has been an employee of continental for 23 of those years [Applause] mr williams has served as an educator for over 30 years serving as our physical education teacher the past three years at continental and we're just so very happy that you decided to ride out into the sunset here with your last three years of pre-retirement it does it is the right choice yes we agree we hate to lose you and um but we know where you live and we know where you'll be here and so we do have a sunshine community here at school that gives gifts to our staff members who are either retiring or moving on to other endeavors but you'll get that gift in front of the whole staff because they didn't want us to give it to you today and i understand but we do have a card for you that's signed by all of us and our board members to just let you know how much we appreciate you okay so thank you thank you [Applause] and miss freedom so it is tradition that as you retire and if you've worked at continental for more than 30 years that you receive a painted pony so this reading here is your official painted pony that i hope you cherish because it's beautiful and we cherish you we wish you so much luck and we're definitely board well i know members son jackson really loved her classes and i'm disappointed um i think uh these two folks are about what makes continental amazing they're amazing individuals and they will be missing but uh but i'll tell you anybody that divorced 30 years or 23 years of their life to educate has got my eternal admiration and i thank you both for your contributions on our kids and their teachers and best of wishes on whatever is next uh both of these amazing teachers not only rocket and foster but both of them coached for me um in their time career coach who has come in and helped with the cross-country and the track program um when i went into administration i was allowed to coach and she took over that and just made a good program even better and so we really appreciate her and her contribution in the classroom but also outside the extracurricular activities with our students which is why she gets some of the loudest cheers from our students at our assemblies because you know there's just a lot of coach this is freeway i'm going to try to get through this um i've been here 14 years and this australian has been here and i would call her if i had a mentor teacher being the only teacher of the district when i came in who worked with kindergarten's great great i heard of her when she turned to me and she really put her arm around me and my family where i came from northern meadow that's where my family was at and she really became the mother to me in the workplace and meant for me that i would not be where i'm at today if it wasn't for her and her love and her support and her kindness towards children which i've tried to mimic every day and the care of her passion i've had the fortune to be on sunday on one of her dc trips where she met her beyond now i got four of those trips under my belt and i went to arizona which is the first time but the passion for the kids and the outside the classroom i inherited that from her you know she's just how many years volleyball coach for this room about 18 years and i will tell you she creates a huge problem because of the fact that she has almost 65 girls out of middle school where there's not a lot of kids and she has such a huge team that is so competitive and it makes it turns the pressure on me to give them competition time against other schools that don't have that strong program and it's because of this lady right here and a lot of the compassion she has but also the care she has for the kids and so she's taught many of us that skill and we hope to carry that on but she'll be great forever in my heart so thank you for the influence passion drive dedication and love is what the both of you are and being the new kid in town last school year for me coach and you have so many ideas and you're such a leader and i don't know how many times i've walked through the hallway and this is feeling from diana and he has given me [Music] they're amazing beautiful when i think about continental i think about the two of you the love the passion and how much because of everything [Music] is okay thank you very much and congratulations okay we have a director of transportation okay um mr lane is not here so i'm gonna just cover this for him tonight okay and mr nathan you might want to help me out if you have more information okay so as we're looking forward to 2021 22 school year we definitely need drivers so um thank you roger for letting us you know what you're gonna help us we will be short three to five drivers to start our school year and we're also looking to create a preschool bus service because right now we had our this year we had our preschool kids riding with our regular elementary school kids and it's very difficult there's just a lot of students so we're trying to get preschool to have their own bus needing to add additional bus routes into modera heightens to meet the demands of the growth and specifically the north end two buses currently with an average of 57 to 65 kids daily we've made some changes and we did we had an informal agreement with sawanita director in how to help both districts be a little bit more efficient so we've come up with the plan to stop transportation in the elephant head area for the upcoming school year we our current service area affected is on hawkway at purple finch to the east currently an average of four students have been utilizing transportation to and from continental in that area and currently one student is utilizing the bus to walden grove high school a letter was sent home to parents april 1st this year and if service was to continue the students on the bus would need to be get picked up at 6 15 in the morning and be on the bus for one and a half hours before getting to school that's with us having to change the routes to meet the needs of the growth in madara highlands it's not a safe place to turn buses around in that area and um damage to buses over the years have entailed mirrors tires suspension systems cost savings to the district will save 18 900 miles a year on the two buses serving the area that's the cost of two prevented maintenance two pms preventative maintenance at eight hundred dollars each and it will save us over eight thousand dollars of fuel cost so we just wanted to state the state and federal laws to cover transportation so it's there for everyone to see okay so that's the reason for our plan so we just wanted to make sure that our board was aware and like i said we've worked in conjunction with and so there's an internal agreement that we will be taking the montana vista students because that's right on the border and we do have a bus that goes to montana vista picks up more students than what sabarita has so they have a bus that they pick up more students that go to saudi that go to slow free so that was the reason why we made that change so we will continue to accept elephant head kids here under open enrollment but we will not be able to provide transportation okay so that concludes mr lane's presentation so do you have enough besides lack of drivers enough buses to expand into their homes so currently we have two extra buses on any given day as many of you know some of our buses are older we have a plan that we're working on getting at least one bus every two years at a minimum which is what we're working on using capital funds for and we're talking about that plan and developing that just so we can continue to increase on buses the biggest issue right now does remain drivers it's not just our district it's all the all districts in arizona are struggling with this um it's a challenge we've got some amazing bus drivers most of them are semi-retired and like to golf um and so the challenge is is that they're great drivers and they absolutely love working for the district but at some point you want to go into full retirement and so that's we're looking at losing three to four next year who have expressed that that's their desire um and also with the challenges of covid it's been challenging as a lot of our drivers are uncomfortable with working in those types of conditions so that's been another challenge that we face especially in trying to recruit well one of the good things is this year the board approved for us to hire a trainer and so the district is in a good place where somebody does have the time we're able to to train a driver from scratch so you can put the word out there for anybody that is interested we have a lot of community members here today that's really a big need that we need and we are with that driver able in about a month month and a half to train up a driver where they get paid during that time but then they could drive as soon as they have completed their certification i got two cents to add to that if you love me once you have three roger three okay uh the plan i passed down to the board was i i think for older guys like me we have a hard time recruiting them to come in every morning and every afternoon five days a week that i think our recruiting could really work if we recruit teams two people on a route and they can work it between them any way they want 70 30 50 50.

but from 5 30 8 15 the food's going to be there people will be taking pictures it'll be like they've got a lot of some fun stuff planned so will you survey the parents again we will yeah we will yep last year was overwhelmingly positive they wanted us to continue doing it so that's it for me all right other action items anybody have any questions on the education support staff handbook for 2021-2022 the main changes there were just updated salary increases for starting wages i think that might have been the only change okay please have a motion to approve the education support staff handbook for 2021-2022 motion second doug and vivian kevin on item b i have uh for our annexation agreement with bolo i have the mike maeves back here right mike and mike's ebola village manager if you have i have mike here in case there's any questions this is a big decision for the board we've been talking about it for several months uh you have the whole annexation agreement uh with you i know some uh there were a few cons are our school attorney has helped me go through this a few times we've been working closely with their attorney there are some issues i think from our billing grounds committee and you guys can help me remind me if you think of anything else i'm missing but i know one was what if the bids came in really high for installing the water line from the road to our campus um would we be locked into it and we've addressed that issue like basically um we would have the option i don't think this is going to happen because i really feel like the bid they're going to get is going to be because all the work is it's it's all the same it's all going to be happening at that time and so they'll be easy for them to come in and do it but i think it'll be the low bid but we could have the option to separate ourselves and make a decision whether we want to do it at that point so we're not locked in even though i don't i don't personally see that happening i think it would be probably most beneficial for us financially to do it while they're doing the construction there were some zoning issues we've worked through with the uh with volo they've been very easy to work with i think the way it's zoned right now is everything we are doing right now is and mike you can tell me if i'm off here um we're we're zoned everything is approved in their zoning if we were to ch if we were to add something outside of the purpose of what we're doing right now and i don't even know what that'd be like let's say we decided to put a starbucks on our campus that would not be that would not fit into the zoning because that's not school related activity that'd be correct mike okay so that was one of the issues i think we tried to work through but other than that i i think i think we've worked through any questions building grounds committee members is there anything that i've about the water cost the water cost um that was on my notes from the last meeting yes i estimated the water cost at i remember you giving us the cost but there was no cost certainty oh yes are we subject to the women what the village chooses to charge for water so that you want to explain that yeah the increases uh so ours couldn't go up higher percentage than we're a commercial customer and industrial customer and we we've got them all from the single family house to the uh national data center um everyone pays the same rate okay now the annexation includes the entire big hollow campus yes so i i understand i'm a policeman so i understand you guys just recontracted up with a lake county sheriff's office correct so if you were to choose to go with a different police agency what i guess my fear would be the service level that our our community our students would get from a smaller police department like a wakanda or anything like that compared to the resources available to the county so if you guys plan to change what sort of notice do we get well i mean any change would have to be determined by the village board it would probably involve some type of search process or rfp process for that it's really something that the board hasn't considered we've been with lake county sheriff's office for 16 years again just renewed a three-year contract which they're set to renew at their board meeting tomorrow so anything beyond that you know would have to go through some type of process there would be some sort of transition there i mean i guess my request is could the superintendent be part of that discussion process i understand the final decisions by the board but um i mean as a school in the district your village um i i would like to think that the 2000 kids that go to school here have some sort of say into what happens i mean as far as how that process would work i mean that would be up to ultimately up to the village board you know i can't i can't stand here and commit to say yes a school superintendent or yes a business a business owner or a corporate representative from a large corporation that would be in the village would have a say in how police services are contracted that would be up to the board and how they'd wish to wish to run that process but again any process would be a public process and there would be the opportunity for for input through that process okay any other questions for from mike they've been very easy to work with through the process i appreciate that there's a lot a lot to handle but i would recommend we move forward with it all right can i please anybody have any other questions okay let me think of what you're asking here so the yes yes so if we waited three years for what we would pay in water fees yes does that pay for itself the connection fee yeah i mean did you yeah the challenge will be that the cost of installation will go up because we're hoping to tap into while they're while they're constructing up fish lake road and doing all the construction work they dive in here the cost is going to be we think the cost will be less for us that's why we're jumping in now because we could we could wait um the uh probably probably three years of water payments would would make up for the connection fee roughly according to what mike had shared with me connection fee that we're saving was around a hundred thousand is what i i think you had shared with me you gave me a formula that was that i figured out it was right in that range was what we were not being charged um yeah our our uh i think the hard decision is that we don't have other than the fact that our fire suppression right now is not very good because we are relying on we have well water so we rely on tanker trucks to come in other than that you know the quality of our water is not great but it's not something that we have to fix you know like we could um so the is it something that we are in dire need of right now not not necessarily but the timing when they do the construction seems to fit for us just to get it done and improve our water quality for people on campus so right and we don't know how long our will will last either right i mean we don't want to waste the last year and need it done immediately and volo might say well it might take two years for the project and then we're we could eventually be out of water so that's another reason we're doing it because whales don't last forever necessarily and you see all the fire hydrants around they're not usable yeah yeah i saw that so yeah do any of does our tax rate change at all tax bill change for any of our people nope and i've had the question asked do we get more tax money too we don't this is just uh our our school boundaries don't change nothing changes in that regards either so does our address change uh eventually mike and i have talked about that eventually we would we i don't think there's going to be a rush to do that but uh eventually there you know could change to an ingleside address i'm sorry abolo yeah yeah i would say we'll definitely do that at some point here but i just don't want to change everything right now so all right anybody have anything else okay okay please you have a motion to approve the resolution for the annexation agreement with the village of volo motion second drug yes yes yes no yes all right anybody have any questions on the substitute teacher page can i please have a motion to approve the proposal to increase substitute teacher pay as recommended motion second yes yes yes yes anybody have any questions on the april employment report nope can i please have a motion to approve the april employment report motion second oh oh call yes yes yes yes yes yes all right we accepted a resignation of holly ascencio elementary fair professional effective may 28th we accepted a resignation of melissa mcmillan bus driver effective april 23rd we accept the resignation of dane shimitsu middle school paraprofessional effective may 28th no foia requests anybody have any requests on the monthly reports for the board any questions uh mr gold would like to formally invite the board members to the end of the year all staff meeting and lunch on friday may 28th from 10 to 12 30 p.m we have a guest speaker coming in who's going to be humorous and motivational trying to send everybody off on a positive note and then we're hoping to have some food trucks uh when he's done at about 11 30 have some food trucks in the parking lot just to have a lunch for staff uh the culture and climate committee talked about this i thought it'd be a good idea to send him off on a positive so that's you're more than welcome to come we'd love to have you and if somebody from the board would be bold enough to even say a few words you're welcome to do that to the staff so sorry gotta work the next regularly scheduled board meeting will take place monday june 14 2021 with closed session beginning at 6pm and open session beginning immediately after closed session ends no other business can i please have a motion to adjourn motion going vivian all in favor all right any opposed eyes have it thank you

yes it's up about 10 [Music] from maybe 5 years ago that sounds about right yeah it was a little over 50 i think last i was there so this is the first time they've both gone to school-wide though right correct so did they collaborate at all on their plans because i kind of sat with them like i noticed that like one school does this a little bit different in this school so i just wonder if like one school has had more success and they also have different amount of allocations of money so that makes a few things um more possible or less possible but i know that we get our elementary schools all of our title one schools together to talk about not only what their plans were but how they assess them and finding the different successes of that so that happens even outside of the school-wide plans okay we're going to move on to item 7.7 if you could pull the presentation up and i'd ask the esd directors to come up to the mics all right item 7.7 is our learning plan for fall in person and remote learning item 7.7 is our learning plan for fall which are we are very excited to be sharing with you this evening there are four committees with a total of 84 people who worked on the plan that is being presented we had an early childhood elementary junior high and high school committee who came together on a number of occasions over the past couple of months and putting together this plan that is being presented for next fall the board has been provided with a paper copy of this presentation so i'd ask that you please take notes i'm going to ask that you hold your questions until we're done with the presentation because like a lot of presentations such as this questions will be answered a lot of your questions probably will be answered during the presentation so the next slide there are three areas this plan addresses the first is in-person learning so what does it look like for the fall in person learning remote learning for those who qualify for remote learning what will this look like for the fall and then the federal funding for covet plans that are all included in this evening's presentation as i've communicated throughout on a very a variety of occasions we are planning five full days of instruction with lunch for the fall in 2122 we are going to allocate additional time at the start of the year for establishing safe and nurturing climate we believe that getting to know our kids their backgrounds what their interests are where they see themselves down the road are very important variables in the equation of success for our students and we are also building additional time into schedules for teaching behavior and social emotional skills and standards and we've also built an additional time for increased support for teacher training in a variety of these areas as well and again those will be highlighted when we talk about the specific levels so slide three starting the year differently as i said we are allocating time within the day at all levels to teach and reinforce the safe and nurturing learning environments for all fostering trusting relationships between students staff and families families will continue to implement the sd 308 climate for learning framework and we will be in stressing the importance of checking for understanding through formative assessment to ensure our students learned what it is that we just taught and when they didn't learn it uh you know to reteach it when necessary these are all items that we've been talking about for a couple years that's why it is very exciting to be talking to you this evening for implementation in the fall good evening i'm heidi pizza i'm the director of social emotional learning and so this slide gives you a kind of graphic or visual definition of social emotional learning and one of the things that we felt was important as we walked into next school year was to ensure that we are attending not just to the academic needs and development of our students but we're continuing to support them with their social emotional development as well as their mental health and wellness social emotional learning is based upon five core competencies that are at the center of what we call the social emotional learning wheel those are self-management responsible decision-making relationship skills social awareness and self-awareness all of these pieces work together to support student success in life and in school these competencies exist at the classroom level where they are taught and reinforced through sel curriculum and our content area instruction and in the climate and culture of the classroom we focus on them school and as we roll out the climate for learning framework and create safe inclusive and affirming learning environments for ensuring that those competencies live at the school-wide level they live within our families and our caregivers as we develop our partnership with um our parents and within the community-based resources and opportunities that we provide in connection outside of our school walls in order to do this for next year we are implementing new social emotional learning curriculum materials at kindergarten through eighth grade this is not a significant departure we have the second step curriculum in kindergarten through eighth grade we are upgrading to the newest edition which was revised during 2020.

start later yeah it would mean that we would end slightly later um and the you know the impact that we've talked about has been with uh some athletic contests students in the fall uh practicing later in the evening but we do have lights um so i you know i think it would be determining how we would navigate that with our athletic conference and that's not the only reason that's that's just one element of of what the implications would be but you could be sure that kids can access activities um so that there's a whole experience and that would be a consideration but the other consideration is um what works for kids and we know we did get feedback when we went into um lockdown the first time that the the students especially i think the faculty too um appreciated the later start enough dr reed if you have anything you want to add yeah so it i guess my point is i know that there are a lot of issues a lot of constituencies that are going to um have some complaints but it's not it it's not something that would totally disrupt our schedule right we would just be moving everything down time down an hour if we had an 8 30 start time right now i think we'd have to talk to schools who have done it and see you know like we have and just just get a little more current impact um and that and that's a good point because there are schools that have done it and and they had issues with their athletic conference as well and but they're they're making it work because the most important thing is what's best for teenagers and what's best for teenagers is their health both physical and mental health that are greatly affected by this disruption to their sleep cycle that happens when you have to get up at 6 30 in the morning when you're a teenager so i only bring that up because i'm i'm not i'm not going to let this issue rest and it has gone by the wayside due to covet but um just giving you all fair warning that i'm going to be making some noise in the near future well if i could um chime in on that um a couple of things you know what's made the later start schedule work is the fact that both parents one or both parents were working from home and if and i think as the workplace dynamic changes if it stays kind of the with the at-home work from home model it certainly would make the um it might make a case for an 8 30 start but i you know i think we have to also we we have to see how the community can balance this as well um this is and so i guess my question to um marlene and to mary is what would the steps be how would we proceed with examining this whether it makes sense for cheshire besides just going to other schools and asking how they dealt with it and going to the um um that icac what is it i anyways i keep forgetting the letters um what other measures would we have to undertake to get a uh thorough examination of the issue and make a reasoned decision on it there certainly is a great deal of research out there i think part of it would be engaging the community i think we need to have a committee as an offshoot of this or or the board of education to really have some meetings about this and to share the information i know there was a sick were a significant number of students and adults who went to a number of workshops about this gosh and what was it two years ago yeah it's gotta be two years ago now the one at trinity mary you were there too yes yeah yeah bringing that speaker in is an option to speak to our our community and you know really engaging them in just in the discussion on the benefits to students health that this this kind of an option represents okay that that's part of what would be first steps and and that at the if i could interrupt i'm sorry um at that conference that was sort of the main thing that was relayed to us was there are you really need to engage your community and first and foremost get people to realize that this is a health issue first and foremost and all those other inconveniences are solvable problems surrounding what what you can do to help help students in this age group specifically help students um mean it's really the only solution to to addressing this health issue i'm not mistaken when the original group went out to do this there was a presentation by our students to the curriculum committee about what they learned and what their takeaways were from attending that conference so you know students have been preliminarily engaged we need to you know circle back and some of those students are graduated now so we would want to you know re revisit that and make sure that that students and teachers and parents were all a part of the process and um i appreciate all that and i was not part of that group and um so forgive me for now i think it was just before you got on board faith yeah um i don't think that i i would take a little bit of issue with minor inconveniences because uh and dismissing it as minor inconveniences because um you had a body of students who came in and presented but there was probably another body that would have could have come in and made an alternative case but in the i mean is it going to cause stress at home which is going to put even more um you know another layer of mental health um issues on on a child's plate i think we have to have an honest discussion about this and not enter it with um the assumption that 8 30 is it is the best time to start and that's all i'm asking for is that we do have that honest discussion and we don't go in with a foregone conclusion perhaps what you want to consider then is whether or not you would like this on our june agenda or our september agenda in order to give folks some time to pull together the information that people are looking for to have that kind of conversation so that's that's something to for you guys to to think about and marlene don't we also have do we still have i think we used to have that uh presentation that was done at that at that conference i can look into that mary you might know better because that was before i was up here in central office so you'll have to fill me in on the history absolutely and i'll look through all of my materials i know i have i have the information and certainly the feedback from students and it was mixed but yeah great okay and and it's it's worth it certainly we need to start circulating and i will point out and again i i'm not trying to dismiss student health concerns um we have a lot on the table coming through this summer with the modernization committee and the hearings we're going to have there and um so perhaps it is something that we explore over the summer and we take up in september when we hope we'll have we'll have the modernization plan working its way toward referendum and we won't be perhaps as stressed um ourselves with trying to get the different things uh you know get the schools back up and running um to their full capacity at a five day a week schedule and and everything else so if i had my brothers i would say let's do september uh aim for september for picking this up in earnest good anything else about the schedule that mary shared for the block schedule for next year i do have i think i was kind of blown away by a 10 30 lunch so i i lost um where i i just was looking at that and when is the fourth period lunch or the fourth wave lunch that when does that start that's probably two mary you are muted sorry i i have to pull it up because i don't have that schedule memorized even though it is our schedule and maureen reflect i mean refresh my memory when the regular lunch wave one began began in our old schedule i believe it was like 11 35 okay and then the last lunch wave is at 12 10.

and we're going up with eight so you're taking 24 off so basically you're taking a you're taking a very large softball field out of the mix and then you've got the two at the bottom those two are very low wattage fixtures they're 500 watt fixtures the ones at the top are 1500s so your consumption is going way down not to mention it's more efficient using led your demand charges will probably go down and the efficient use of being able to turn it on and off because you've got instant on instant off rather than having the warm-up cool down and warm back up so i'm sure you've had gains around here where the lights went out everybody has and you've got to wait for the lamps to cool down before you warm them back up and all that kind of stuff so any storm comes through you can turn them off and cut them off and something changes you can cut them right back on there's no so you don't have to sit there and burn stuff unnecessarily so you're gonna save quite a bit and then the biggest thing too is that the constant we got you know again the next two three four five six years we could be replacing four five six seven eight nine lights depending on what the year is it's just gonna start adding up the engineer that uh mr marshall records we have done several projects with drew rose in that company they've all been great and it's kind of connecting it there will be no architect fees we have the polls up there existing polls we would have a fee with drew for about fifteen hundred dollars that's it fifteen hundred dollars to work with brad to make sure everything is done the way it should be done it's basically a consulting fee for us to make sure that the contractors the vendors everything works out so it's a fifteen hundred dollar fee for drew to oversee and work with brad to make sure it's he's acting in our best interest to make sure everything's stayed okay and we met the contractors drew came up i came up we walked everybody through to look at it make sure they understand what's going on in the whole thing so the apollos that he talked about it's basically it's uh it's like any other cooperative purchase program you're purchasing off of uh bids already done so you don't have to go through the cops and the hassle and the time and all that so pretty quick and easy i mean it's for the installation uh the guys we've had come um you're gonna know they were here so to give you a quick rundown if we are moving forward with this project kind is of an essence because again we want to make sure we're lit up for our first football game they're working on numbers right now hopefully we'll have numbers in the next seven to ten days before the end of the week okay before the end of the week which will then if we do like for example a special meeting to approve this is the direction you want to go we'll do that they will purchase they'll have the lights here in five six weeks of proximal days yes sir and i'll push it to get it on on the short side of that because you don't have polls yes instructed installation will be sometime in i'm going to say the first to the second week in july projects should be done in a week to two weeks yesterday so we are we're in a good situation here who choose to go and again it's budgeted out of next year's capital outlet uh okay that all sounds cool um i guess our i mean biggest question everyone's gonna have some money right i mean the we know we're spending some money to repair the stuff we have now um and they keep it going for whatever it costs year over year so i guess i'm i'm fine with seeing what a bid looks like and making the decision from there i don't think is there a ballpark number i mean are we talking half a million dollars what are we talking about we've given we've given mr marshall numbers yeah um we proc it's okay again we still have to have these obviously verified at the end of this week but um yeah not to exceed 200 000.

um so obviously a vested interest in what's happening uh educational wise um also just as a regular taxpayer and a general advocate uh more interested in what's going on within the district uh want to be informed want to be a part of uh you know making better solutions same thing probably you guys are all up there for okay thank you so how did you hear about that we had an opening uh it was uh that's a great question uh my wife nominally i'm not exactly sure where she found out from but uh certainly when i found out that there was an opening i was definitely interested and wanted to write to you guys as soon as possible okay does anyone else have any questions i'm very excited because uh you know having one position in three people with there were years i mean i've been on the board in the last election yeah yeah like there's so many times where we we don't have anyone that wants to be on it to have three very qualified people coming is great so thank you so much for coming and speaking with us absolutely thank you thank you all right uh now we are up to the superintendent's report yes i can see there's some people here advocating for me as always so that's always good to see um but i would like to uh make mention that i i think i've been kind of crystal clear um that my intent is not to uh ask for another contract um i'm actually gonna be exercising my applause in my contract to uh go back to being a principal or some other position in the district when my contract is up so um that's really not an option at the moment renewable for me so just want to make that clear to everybody so i don't know where you're getting your information from but i've been kind of crystal clear about that um if anybody thinks that this job is worth fighting for um please i advocate that you should come do this job take on this job and do some of the things that needs to be done especially during a pandemic um this has been a very difficult year year and a half to say the least um and quite frankly it's been very very taxing on me and my family and my health so uh i'm looking forward to taking that step back and going back to the ability to deal with kids so thank you very much all right um at this time you're gonna go we're going to just move executive up to the front because there's things that we need to talk about up front um prior to the meeting starting so that's the only change that we're going to make we're going to move that up to now we're going into an executive for number one a matter of rendered confidential by federal or state law number three material the disclosure which constitutes an unwarranted invasion of individual privacy four a collective bargaining agreement and or negotiations related to it seven pending or anticipated litigation or contract negotiations and or matters of attorney client privilege a specific perspective or current employees unless all which will be adversely affected requested an open session uh can i get a motion to go into executive motion can i get a sentence all in favor all right all right we will we're going to take a minute out for an executive and we will [Music] return all right um we're going to be back into open uh session i will say um um because two of the people who are applying for the board position are not here to interview we are going to get in touch with them um to try and make the meeting on the 24th after that time we will definitely make a decision i will share your resumes with the rest of the board i will have photocopies of that between now and then um if you're more than welcome to come back that evening if you'd like um but you've already you know we've already spoke to you that's totally up to you and then after next week's meeting we will make a decision but thank you thank you so much for coming um at this time we are up to open for the public for agenda items only is there anyone that wants to talk about anything that's on the agenda see none all right there's one online tommy girl what's up i know we had a question from mrs reilly who left yeah and she was asking about the side letter of agreement as it was not attached to the agenda and i think it was because it was not yet signed by different child so when we have that sign which we did later today okay so she was she was asking about the sidewalk agreement with the bba um for the summer work i just signed up here this evening so once that is uh that will go online as soon as as possible yeah that's all i don't know [Music] [Applause] and i just have a question about point six stage of assange for needle and elementary um i just noticed that there's a one teacher there um an asi teacher and she will be a sixth grade teacher so i just wanna make i just wanna my question is will she be a full-time teacher yeah she's moving from the asi into the sixth grade position right okay i just want to make sure that she'll be able to perform her job because previously she was a teacher of my son and she was always out so i just want to make sure that you are aware of that miss langosky was speaking yes yeah we're not allowed to really discuss personnel issues in public but we've heard what you've had to say does anyone else have anything from the agenda [Music] which is approval of the minutes it resolved that the board of boundary board of education approves the minutes for the following meetings uh does anyone have any comments or questions or does anyone else have to abstain can i get a wrong [Music] yes yes six personnel resolutions district and high school you resolve that the superintendent recommends for approval the resolution is outlined in personnel resolutions under district in high [Music] yes yes yes morris yes this is mom selling yes it's about there yes yes yes seven uh being resolved the superintendent recommends for approval the resolutions is outlined in personnel resolutions under middle and elementary schools may i get an option motion mr val can i get a second [Music] um yes i think that you would have to make a motion to do that and then the board would have to agree to table that correct if she wants to table something within a resolution if she wants to table that particular person's the vote on that particular position she would have to then make a motion to table that particular thing and then we would have to vote on whether or not okay so mr uzumani would like to make a resolution you're not like to make a motion to uh table the vote on a particular employee do you want to just do the whole set or just her name within that document um can we can she table just that particular person as opposed to 7.6 is a list of can i get a motion [Music] hearing none we will just vote on it as is does that any other questions hearing none can i get a roll call for the whole i'm sure mr bail yes yes you can vote now if you want okay mr thompson yes it's the battle there [Music] board of education approves the resolutions as outlined in education i'm really excited to see we have field trips happening again [Music] yes uh 9.1 resolve the boundary board of education includes the resolutions as outlined in education resolutions under middle and elementary schools 9.2 can i get a motion motion mr second second is mars i need comments on that one hearing none can i get a roll call mr bell yes martinez yes [Music] yes and financial resolution is 10.2 to 10.1010 um awesome i this person gave me a donation uh is that someone that like how [Music] uh it's a contraption that they'll be using it's like to use marbles and gravity so it's just a stem activity in the fall we'll be having an after-school enrichment club for our students that are part of the district identified enrichment program so it goes to materials and supplies for that cloud awesome well thank them for thinking of us any other comments or oh i have a question with 10.7 so that's the same you had is any [Music] yes [Music] yes [Music] any new business yeah um so we're doing i i don't need my phone all right okay just tell them you can't hear me can you guys hear me back there okay no it's just excited that their their art club is going back downtown is there any way we can get this lettering to take some pictures and we can see the pictures of the windows they do phenomenal work and uh you know i know my daughter loved going downtown doing that so i'm just glad to see it happening again i'd love to maybe if they can come in and do a presentation i think they would be great to see it you know thank you ms smith i'm just excited to see all these people in the audience hopefully they'll come out when the kids you know when the when the kids get their awards that would be great yeah we'd be more people with other parents post them all we don't post on social media so it's done um just to clarify for that for other towns it's the parents who post about it on the pages and stuff like that it's not the board that directly does it um and it's publicized at least 24 hours in advance in local newspapers and everything so we follow the sunshine law so anything that is public knowledge people will see in advance like every other district all right at this point is there any anything new all right so at this point we are open to the public for discussion anything that's whether it's on the agenda or not if you want to come forward and say something just state your name and address my name is and i'm here tonight i am retiring as the accounts fabled person um and i just wanted to take this opportunity to thank dr gallagher for everything he has done for me and this district um i see there's a couple critics in here and maybe a little history when i first started here there was a ba who did not believe in public education the superintendent did like nine toes out the door and i was told by my superintendent i sat where you are on the board of education and she told me to run and run really fast because of some of the things that were going on here and i almost did and i met dr gallagher i had the opportunity to work with him in the high school and i saw what he did in high school the passion he had for his students and for education and that's when i decided to stay fast forward through a lot of turmoil the va left the superintendent retired and they appointed dr gallagher and the way he turned the high school around and very short order he turned his district around his passion his belief in the students that every child coming in like every child had work just rang through the entire district instead of high school and i just found that to be extremely refreshing and and wonderful for this district turn around and very short of it and it's been a pleasure to work here all this time now um well i'm a little shocked i have to say about dr gallagher's announcement i do understand and told that this past year um i saw him work just out of bounds of anybody and trying to make sure that these students were educated safely in person as much as possible everything he did was for those kids and i appreciate everything you've done for me dr caliber um i'm happy to have been able to work with you as colleague as a have you like my boss and um thank you all on the board thank you so much [Music] does anyone else wish to come forward just state your name and address you got it my name is brooke polycaster and i'm at 403 and i'm not out um so i'm not a fan of dr gallagher's i think my science clearly posts that um there's a lot of reasons um some of it being the hostile treatment and the toxic work environment that we've heard a lot from teachers um the fact that we've had a lot of teachers either resign or be fired or non-read or non-renewed since 2016 and i think that teachers not coming back um deciding to leave it's not always for a bigger better paycheck many times we've had admin we have had teachers leave for lateral positions for nominal amounts of pay indifference and i think that speaks to it should ask the question why are they not staying what is it about being here that they why don't they want to stay so that's something to most definitely look into and i believe that um the district did do that but it was at hand for research that they did poll right so the research has been gathered about that and i'm curious to know if we as parents or we as um taxpayers get to know any of those results and if so when we would be able to see that i believe once i think they're posting on we're done with all of those attached to it okay so i don't know which dates they are but yeah i thought that was going to be my next question okay i don't know but i know that they were i know when we were in the when we were in the cafeteria whole presentation okay to the public at that point to go over and so that was prior to us prior to coving has there been one since covet has happened is there one recently has there been a reason no and there hasn't been one like during the school year at all no okay um dr gallagher since you have said that you have made it emphatically clear that this is not a job or a position that you're really thrilled about any longer and that you have no intention of continuing beyond your current contract i was wondering how did you make it clear did you submit a letter of resignation or intention to leave i'm a tenured employee of the district so i will be going to a different position in the district okay we'll let you know at the end of the contract where i'll go okay so but at any given point in time do you have to submit i don't because obviously i am not a tenured professional so i don't know how it works um do you have to submit a letter at any given point in time to let them know that this is your intention like if the board wanted to if they had an intention to not renew your contract they would have to submit by writing by a certain date that they did not have that intention do you also have to submit in writing to the board by a certain time that is not your intention i'm sorry my notification goes to the board president okay is it specific and how it's supposed to be okay that's cool all right thank you hello how are you for those who do not recognize me my name is marty gleason i was a board member for oh maybe 20 years maybe a little more maybe a little less it seemed like 30 years uh i am now resident of the fine township scadaway i just thought tonight i would come and warn the board to the perils of superintendent searches i was lucky enough to be involved in quite a few of them and i'd like to go over a little history with you uh when i first got on the board the superintendent of schools was a man named dr osborne abby the board didn't like him because he wanted to turn the district into a special ed super district where we would take in special ed students from all over the state because we had so much room in our buildings how much room do we have in our buildings from that date back that was in the 90s to today we've had two building campaigns since then we've moved into two catholic schools so we can see how that plan would have gone uh from there we had a very extensive board superintendent search led by some very erudite and older board members i was a young board member at the time i was in my 20s i didn't really understand being on the board i remember a shocking thing was said to me when i was frustrated with other board members and someone said to me people's perception is their reality and that was one of the great life lessons of my life to understand when i'm dealing with people their perception is their reality and i'm not going to convince them that i am correct and we went through an extensive search and and we had open forums with the the candidates we did all kinds of things and i wasn't a big fan of the person we were hiring and if i do say so myself he was a train wreck he liked to hire alternative route teachers so he hired this diminutive little man to teach science who had no ability to manage a classroom and i don't care where you go to school i don't care what degrees you hold my opinion after being on school board and being a student for so many years is that the best thing a teacher can do is manage his classroom and make people want to listen to him i don't care if you went to cornell or raritan valley community college this man did not see it that way and we ended up with a staff of incompetent boobs excuse my language and after three years he had to go and it wasn't just bound brook and our unique problems this man was fired at two other districts after he left after dr byron we had dan blatchford we brought him up from high school principal he was a wonderful superintendent a wonderful man but guess what wonderful people also can get higher paying jobs this is a small district uh dr blackford ended up down in hamilton the capital of blueberries and a much bigger district than bound brook and a much easier district to superintend in this district because this district has many challenges you board members know after that they hired i was off the school board and they hired a woman dr deborah alexander and all i can say about dr alexander is you would make your impassioned plea to her and she would listen and then she would say absolutely not and she did it to everyone and that wore out her welcome and it also got me to run for board that's like why i always like to call myself the grover cleveland of school board members uh so i was re-elected to the board and this time i guess i was a little older a little wiser and the board president quickly resigned after about three weeks of being bored president it was a little more than he thought he could handle rest in peace mr mickel and we we did another search and we found dr hoffman and dr hoffman was a wonderful man but the one thing is dr hoffman was later in his career and people who are later in their career they don't have to always give a poop you know they can just let things pass and some things can pass and i guess when we hire dr gallagher that's how things change what i can tell you he's a doer he's a doer i remember some people coming to a board meeting and saying the schools have to be air conditioned now as a graduate of this fine school and having my whole career through the school sweating in this school i can tell you i thought that would never happen it happened why because the man to do it you you've got a bond referendum passed at in your first shot that's not easy to do i i was part of one that took three shots and i'm i'm only here to say you know friction is rough and i i one of the most disturbing things that ever happened to me as a board member was when an employee a teacher who i loved who was a good teacher came up to me and said i'm gonna get that person fired i'm a board member and you're telling me you're gonna get someone fired well let me tell you something some wrestling coaches in uh phillipsburg just tried to do that and they were taken out of the school in cups it's incorrect behavior i'm sorry and as far as i was concerned and that became the big thing giving the superintendent a five-year contract because after a year and a half you could make the superintendent look bad and run them out of district and the inmates were running the asylum as as i said so i i just think be careful for what you wish for because it's better to have the devil you know because i can tell you this about superintendent searches you're going to be lied to a school district is just going to want to get rid of somebody and they're going to give you a glowing review of someone they're going to say oh he's wonderful they're not going to let you know he molested three kids and that's what he's accused of you're not going to find out you're not going to find out we all know that we have any knowledge of education that people can go from district to district with terrible transgressions my wrestling coach here he impregnated a fellow student of mine and never lost his job times have changed but that's the way things worked people covered it up and that's disgusting and and so you have to be careful number one number two you are an entry-level position an entry-level position in a super super challenging district a a district with an explosion in apartment buildings uh probably one of the most diverse student bodies in the state of new jersey you're still grossly underfunded and at least when i was on school board if it's changed let me know i believe you can only pay your superintendent so much due to the size of your school correct is that still the story so if i go to scout away i can get a much higher paycheck correct if that's a much bigger school okay so you got to remember what are you going to get what are you going to get and i just went over what we got in my time on school board and it's not a glowing it's not a glowing list of outstanding candidates i'm sorry my phone off i thought i turned it off uh what i suggest at this point is if you have a problem with your superintendent that's what personal improvement goals are for you tell your superintendent we want to do this better we want to do that better and you hold their feet to the fire it's what i tried to do as a school board member i tried to do it with a smile and with a funny joke but i really tried when i was on school board to move things forward and the last thing i would say is no people's intentions when when the teachers are talking in your ears know their intentions i would invite you someday to put up because i bet it's still the same when i was on school board the amount of grievances that are filed by this union and how many they win how many they went because i know my last year on school board it was 22 grievances with one win to me that's abusive behavior thank you good night i never plan to be back here again i love you all it's nice to see you everyone i know just state your name and address can i pull my mask down yes thank you hi i'm i'm lisa gazino i live at 768 washong avenue platform road um i'm here tonight and i worked a double shift and i came here right after i'm sorry i'm a little late so i missed a lot of weekend but i'm here because i think baumbrook has issues and i think that there's some discontent within the district and within the population of the district and i'm not a teacher so i can't speak on behalf of being a teacher understanding that or being part of a school board and what you guys do every day that i can look at a school board and i can look at a governing body of this school district and i can say that it feels like it's broken i can look at it and say i feel like if this was a company and i hate to even pull in the word corporation or business or operations or standards but when i look at how things are run i look at it and say things aren't happening the way they should be happening i've lived in the district i've lived in bound work my husband and i moved here with my son 13 years ago and the district has been in trouble for 13 years we've struggled we've been a title one district we've had financial issues we've had cultural issues and i look at you guys as the board as the superintendent as the assistant superintendent and i say to myself if this was a business if this was a corporation if we were in charge of moving ourselves forward and making a difference we would be failing and so i i don't know a lot about dr gallagher i'm sorry i just i don't but i have to say that things don't seem to be running well and as a taxpayer as someone who has a child in the district i just have to say to myself could we do better can we can we perform better and does the leadership of this group does the leadership of this business as a school district can it be better and i just have to say can we ask ourselves can we can we improve on on where we're at can we be more creative can we come up with different solutions for things that we've had problems for for the last 10 years can we evolve into something bigger and better than what we're doing right now and i have to say like if we don't try then is it not possible so i'm just frustrated as a taxpayer as a mom that the district hasn't been able to do things that our neighboring districts have been able to do we pay high taxes brook is not cheap to live in as far as the taxes go we put a lot of money in but we don't seem to get a lot out there are a lot of extracurricular activities there are a lot of things that i feel other districts are doing thinking creatively clubs extracurricular activities teachers feel impacted to do things when they feel like there's progress and i just feel like bombard is lacking a lot of progress and if we stay stagnant then we'll never ever change and if we don't think we can do any better then we'll never do any better and again it's not against dr gallagher but i have to say to myself if this was a company and a ceo was leaving this company and the margins were increasing and the profit wasn't increasing then there would be change and that's all i have to say thank you thank you [Music] hello lauren paxton president of the bbei i just want to thank you for uh sticking with the uh the 11th month uh proposal um it wasn't easy but we got it done um and to um what miss uh castro was asking about i think um what she was referring to is the hanover focus group that was just completed you know we were asking that if those results that those results would be the professional development okay but we have not got the results of that yet okay so what she said all right so mr miss pablo i think that's what she's uh yeah so if the focus group it was just a small focus group about professional development opportunities to move the district forward but we have not gotten that back yet i thought you were referring to the general parents students teachers that whole that whole thing took place over a year ago just a quick follow-up on that the questions that i asked about would then apply to this professional um when do you anticipate results and will they be publicized in the same fashion yes they will absolutely be publicized and we're not sure when they're coming in yeah we just got done with the we had the meeting today um diversity equity and inclusion uh so today was the last meeting that was on the first survey that we did the the focus groups is the second so we're just finishing off the first we haven't even got to set it so we're not talking to probably late june july okay so towards the end of this year at the beginning of the summer okay thank you you're welcome hello my name is emery gianaro i live at 151 west high street um i just came here tonight you know i don't really like to be involved in these things but the past two years i've been trying to be involved as much as possible i have two kids in the district and they're involved in sports i consider myself to be very involved in education i call check the teachers i call principals if i have concerns and talk to teachers when we are allowed to be you know my kids are virtual and it's just a continual they feel beaten up they feel nuts they feel disrespected they don't feel encouraged they give a hundred percent but can you imagine if they felt supported how much they would do for the kids our kids deserve better i think our experts are better our teachers deserve better and i just hope the board really takes that into consideration thank you thank you anyone else there's one question okay there's one online question um this is from diane pavlichko she said last week was teacher appreciation week i'd like to take a moment to thank mrs fisher for showing her appreciation and acknowledging and teaching teachers and staff for their hard work this year i'd also like to make note that no acknowledgement or thank you was sent by dr gallagher to his teachers or staff in this extra difficult year where teachers are working twice as hard as theirs with their students in person and virtual teaching them simultaneously keeping everyone on track and doing their best no thank you or acknowledgement of their hard work was made by the superintendent a simple email is really all that was needed recognizing their hard work and dedication through this crazy school year on a side note that dr goliver was on vacation last week i was on vacation last week i was out of state and i did send thank you notes to my teachers constantly especially during this time i've done so all year long as well as last year especially during this difficult time of doing hybrid and in person but it is very very difficult i'm also advocating all the time in all my meetings on the state level as well as on a county level advocating for in-person learning for next year and not having any virtual for next year because i just think it's way too demanding on our teachers right now and i can't see us doing that again next year [Music] okay any other questions or comments all right at this time we are going to move to uh 15 which is hiv for the board of education the approval of the resolutions is outlined in approval of the hip cases under high school 15.2 can i get a motion motion martinez can i get a second okay mr thomas roll call please mr brown yes yes yes yes [Music] yes yes so yes yes 16 resolve the downward board of education the approval of the resolution is outlined in approval of cases under middle and elementary schools can i get a motion i'll show you yes [Music] yes yes uh at this time i need a motion to adjourn emotion mr val the second was smart
