class the cult of the year who is kind safe and responsible is for nora williamson [Music] okay okay no this is fine okay this is next we have harper anderson she is the cultivator for the afternoon okay so then we have for the different areas so our kind bolt of the year for the afternoon class is they're very surprised their faces are really cute all right our kind of quote of the year for the morning class for my morning class is olivia sherman [Applause] okay okay the kind cult of the year for the for the dual language class is janae jones okay this is for um responsible cultivators this is really a hard one because they have a lot of responsibilities and preschool like to take care of their things and to always change their shoes and to remember their water bottle so the kind the responsible quote for the morning class when i'm wearing class is nola trainer this is the responsible quote this is important because they have a lot of responsibilities this year as this child came to every single zoom lesson and came to preschool every day after school in the afternoon class and that child was adrienne calderon bear [Applause] okay responsible quote of the year for the dual language class is katy godfrey [Applause] okay and our same quote of the year for my afternoon class is hazel curtis same cold of the year for the morning my morning classes ethan crawford ethan language class is emma young either we can bring your certificate to you that's okay so these are my cold safe and responsible and kind quotes from the year okay now we're going to do our ixl awards so ixl is an online platform that children complete at home and sometimes we do it in school as well so we have an award for the child talk i ixl preschool user and it was not surprisingly adrienne i'm so happy to award these kids their certificates but they so deserve it but it was really hard because i could and i have so many wonderful kids so my first award for our state cult of the year is a little guy who's just good as well dave hale francisco fernandez is a little girl who's as good as full day of the day out every single day ruby straighley and my kind hold of the year is another girl who's just wonderful and kind to everybody all day long brinley [Applause] and our overall pulse of the year this girl has worked so hard all year on me making so proud of her [Applause] caroline good morning buenos dias rodriguez i'm one of the dual language teachers in kindergarten and like mr said i'm also very excited to do this awards assembly in person because as you probably know your students have worked so hard all year long and because with all the ups and downs and the uncertainties i appreciate all of your support that you have done throughout the year so without further ado my faithful of the year is [Applause] my responsible cult of the year um he sometimes doesn't make the right decisions but why what i love about him is he will always admit to it and apologize right away so i feel that the wonderful characteristic so young and that's why i chose him to be responsible cult of the year caleb miller and my next student has demonstrated kindness towards all the students and staff throughout the whole year and i really appreciate that because even during hectic time he has always been consistently kind and that is and my overall wonderful cult of the year has been a rock of a student all year long with attendance with completion of her work and just a wonderful attitude in learning and participating with the other students in the classroom and that is good morning [Applause] they've um here too long okay so my favorite hope of the year is emily burkhauser [Applause] [Music] of the year my quote of the year for the whole year in a super responsible time saved and made the most improvement in my class with [Applause] good morning everyone typically i'm not here i typically teach first grade but this year i had the incredible honor of teaching digitally both in kindergarten and in first grade so for my course of the year i decided to kind of mix things up a little bit and i wanted to focus on responsibility simply because these students have been pouring themselves into a computer screen every single day completing multiple investments joining live needs and i just cannot thank them enough for all their hard work so i have three responsible cults the first one is savannah [Applause] the second responsible cult is valentina [Applause] the third responsible is inky cordero and the last award that i have is a student who just went above and beyond in all of the digital expectations and i'm truly truly proud of this has been so for perfect attendance which we're very happy and very proud of our students with their perfect attendance this is awarding to christian gallegos elisha bolognae and audrey gallardo for i excel under our last kindergarten awards for top kindergartener ixl user laila romero benjamin stewart [Applause] zoe solitary [Applause] and azariah all right let's give our kids and i just want to let parents know that i excel is a program that is entailed to help close the achievement gap and let kids go further if they're ready students will have access to ixl this year until july 1st so you can keep them going in the summer if you need them to just do something say go to ixl for a little bit and then we'll roll over the data to start over for next school year but they will have access through july 1st this year so once again kindergartners i'm so very very proud of you proud of your parents for all of your hard work have a great summer be safe also we'll see you at promotion and you can come up and take pictures real quick thank you so much thank you teachers you're awesome no

you've continued to connect with your students and thought of creative ways to make this year special you've constantly challenged us to do our best and we're always there to help us when we needed it together we've created a bond and memories that will last a lifetime to everyone else who has helped us succeed thank you i am so grateful to be a part of the graduating class of 2021 at columbia high school and as we go our separate ways don't forget to be real chs next we'll have our salutatorian kelsey olendorf kelsey please join me good afternoon friends families teachers and administrators closer okay good afternoon friends families teachers and administrators i would first like to thank you all for being here and for your continued support and advice that has led us here today i speak for all when i say that we appreciate you and we could not have done this without you next i would like to congratulate my classmates the class of 2021 we did it as i sat down to write this speech i tried to think of things that embodied the class of 2021 and a plethora of thoughts filled my brain from the many late nights spent studying to all the memories created while spending hours traveling to and from competitions one thing kept popping up in my brain roller coasters now i know what you're probably thinking oh great another speech with a cheesy cliche however as cliche as it might sound high school is like a roller coaster ride before freshman year we all waited in anticipation as we were about to embark on the tallest and scariest roller coaster known as high school as we were shuffling through the line navigating registration and a new environment we finally arrived at the beginning of our wild ride as freshmen we all picked our seats which represented our hobbies our passions and the classes that we took over time these seats may have changed however we became more comfortable and knowledgeable and learned how to persevere and have fun at the end of that first year and every other year following it we all got off the ride only look only to look forward to new adventures on any ride there are going to be ups and downs however i think it is safe to say that starting this school year our senior year it felt like we were stuck on the tracks not knowing how it would pan out we faced a lot of challenges from learning online to navigating the restrictions due to covid to not knowing if our sports teams were going to be able to compete not only students but teachers had to adapt to teaching both in person and online students i witnessed firsthand a teacher teach a whole lesson to the class just to find out that their microphone was muted in any new or unknown situation it is easy for frustration to take over however we did not let these new challenges take over our senior year we did not lose hope we continued to learn and grow as students when i think of the class of the phrase by winston churchill comes to mind success is not final failure is not fatal it is the contr it is the courage to continue that counts i know our senior year wasn't like how our freshman selves would have imagined it but we faced the challenges we showed up and did not give up of course you can't ride a roller coaster without buckling in your seatbelt they are there throughout the entire ride through the ups and downs to ensure that we are safe they are there when we feel discouraged whether that be from struggling into class or having drama between friends but they are also there when we feel at our best whether that be from getting an a on a chemistry test or getting accepted into our dream college whether we were rising up or catapulting down they were there all the way until the end now i encourage you to think about who your seatbelt was throughout your high school career who encouraged you when you felt down and cheered for you when you're at your best i hope that you thank these people for their unwavering commitment i would like to take a moment to thank all the people who acted as my seatbelt throughout high school thank you to my parents for your love and support throughout everything thank you to my friends and family for all your wisdom and guidance lastly thank you to my twin brother colin who pushed me to be my best i know you probably already know this but my life would not be the same without you and now here we are at the end of our final rollercoaster ride and we can triumphantly say that even though we might have been afraid or nervous at first we were brave enough to take the ride and even manage to have fun along the way i would like to again congratulate the class of 2021 a class full of state scholars athletes and overall great people i am proud to say that i was part of the 2021 class of columbia high school as we are all about to part ways and start new journeys on a substantially larger coaster towards adulthood i can confidently say that we are all well equipped with the skills and passion to flourish in college as well as in the professional workforce i know that all of you will find happiness and success in anything you choose to do but above all i hope that every once in a while you throw up your hands and enjoy the ride thank you our last speech will be given by the valedictorian natalie bush natalie please come on up well people we finally made it most of us have been together for 13 years it's crazy how fast time flies after our last day of school i started reflecting on our time here in columbia i remembered our excitement in parkview when dr b would read on the roof i recalled all of us dressing up for prairie day and our very own human wax museums then we made it to middle school and our world started expanding we not only started changing rooms for different classes we started exploring interest in band choir musical theater productions and sports i still can't believe how many conference championships both our girls and boys sports teams won in eighth grade i also reminisced about roller skating and p.e the luaus and our first two dances then we thought we were so old because we finally made it to high school we learned to pick very wisely where to sit at lunch on the first day of school because that's probably where you're going to be stuck eating for the rest of the semester i thought back fondly on all our crazy dress-up days and spirit weeks we can brag for the rest of our lives about winning the spirit stick two years in a row i'm so glad to have made all these memories with you all high school has taught me the importance of being true to myself being yourself makes accomplishments feel much more rewarding and it makes the journey to those accomplishments much more fun as well i hope all of you find the courage to be unapologetically yourselves moving forward in your lives the world needs individuality as well so find you we're good at and be proud of it if we're all good at the same thing the world would be lacking in many aspects for example if the whole world was exactly like me everyone would be pretty smart at math and science but no one would no one's car would be running because no one would know how to change their oil or even how to open the hood have confidence and be proud in any profession you choose because we need everyone's individual talents to have a functioning society if you only remember one thing from this speech i hope it's this quote by michelle obama success isn't about the amount of money you make it's about the difference you make in people's lives i want to challenge you all moving forward to not only work hard to be successful in college your career the military or whatever path you have chosen but be the difference in people's lives as minor myers junior said go into the world and do well but more importantly go into the world and do good i'm confident that you will all make a positive impact and help others our grade is full of difference makers and i'm proud to be part of it just be kind to others and i guarantee you will make the world a better place life will throw its challenges your way but i know you will all make it through life struggles and do great things in this world i mean we've already made it through what might be the hardest year of our lives we survived not only the craziness of senior year but we did it during a global pandemic if we can go to school remotely from our bedrooms for a year and still manage to successfully graduate we can do anything i wrap up i'd like to thank everyone who has guided my classmates and me to this point thank you to the school board all members of our administration and staff and of course thank you to our wonderful teachers i know this year in a pandemic was just as hard for you as it was for the students but your hard work doesn't go unnoticed i want to thank all the parents and families especially mine for all the support over the last four years i seriously couldn't have done it without you and of course i have to thank my two older brothers because nothing motivates you quite like good old sibling rivalry and finally i want to thank my classmates thanks for a great four years we've all been through a lot together more than we could have ever imagined but we finally made it we did it we're graduating and now it's time to celebrate and as always be real chs right there at the conclusion of each school year the faculty and staff of columbia high school nominate and select one graduating senior for the outstanding senior award the student is selected based on their academic achievement but more importantly the content of their character strong work ethic and overall dedication to the total school program this year's recipient for the outstanding senior award selected by the faculty is natalie bush now for the moment we've all been waiting for the presentation of diplomas to the class of 2021 did you guys enjoy go ahead and come on up here we go anna irene adams mason robert congratulations to these students [Applause] very quickly guys i want to just take one moment because when i first started uh five years ago as a principal and i've been here 15 years prior to we had one person in flint hills tech and as of i think starting next year we're up to 7 16 or 17 kids going and gaining certifications and most of those people with those certifications if they go and get the completed certification we'll make as much as money as anyone that comes out of college just so you know they're getting it paid for and they're getting a transportation paid for to go over there and it has became a huge deal in the united states these technical educational things you may not find what you want in flick flint hills tech because they only have about 20 but you've got to keep in mind that there are lots of technical schools out there if you don't go right away we found a lot of things going on even close by at anderson county over in iola and up at washburn so don't ever underestimate the amount of knowledge that you can gain and with that certification you could make a lot of money just by that and then go go for free so keep that in the back of your mind as you think about technical schools and we have several juniors who attended flint hills technical college this school year aoen codney has completed 14 hours in the graphic arts design program [Applause] owen merchant has completed 16 hours in the welding technology program [Applause] thomas unruh has completed 14 hours in the power plant technology program [Applause] and derrick cole has completed all right so okay hey hey how are ya um okay hey where is everybody so yes like sometimes you number three two minutes well good afternoon everyone welcome what a glorious afternoon to come together and celebrate some of our most talented um and dedicated students thank you very much before we even begin how about a nice big round of applause for all of our inductees today so my name is troy gobble and it is my honor to be the principal at stevenson high school and i couldn't be happier to be in front of you today to get a chance to celebrate our students um often in these moments i like to steal from our namesake ed ly stevenson um a lot of really amazing quotes he's provided us over time um and one of my favorites at a graduation ceremony in 1956 he said when you leave here don't forget why you came and i think that's an important graduation statement but i think it's just as critical for those of us joining the national honor society as you come here as you join as you become a part of this organization don't forget what it was that brought you here to begin with don't forget that application process don't forget the things you did to get yourself to this point and for those of you that don't know let me take a minute and share a little bit of history of where the national honor society has come from and its purpose the national association of secondary school principals officially established the national honor society in 1921.

notify the public of these procedures as soon as practicable skenther can we have a roll call please shannon jenkins here mary wait here kathleen amarill here john nunes chris oliver here excellent so the first item on the agenda is the superintendent's certificate of academic excellent i will excellence i will hand this over to dr gifford now thank you madam chair and once again each year we are able to offer two students from our high school um actually award them with the certificate of academic excellence and obviously we ask our high school administration to choose those two students who exemplify fantastic standards as well as contribution to the community so i will turn it over to principal tebow to talk about our students that are here tonight with their family to receive this award the opportunity to recognize a couple of our most outstanding students this evening as dr gifford referenced each year we give this we give we award the superintendent's excellence award to two deserving students along with a scholarship as well and so this year the first recipient of the superintendent's excellence award is grace george grace has been an outstanding member of the dartmouth high school high school community for the past four years and has demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence as well as to serving as a leader within our school community academically grace has challenged herself by taking many of the most rigorous courses offered at dartmouth high school in fact grace has taken six advanced placement courses over the course of her time as a student at dartmouth high school and thus far her lowest mark in one of those six classes was an a minus so grace has clearly done an outstanding job academically here while grace's academic achievement is extraordinary and deserving of recognition her commitment and involvement in other clubs and activities is equally as impressive grace has been a member of the south coast grit which was a club that trained to run marathons with students she was a contestant this year in dartmouth's finest she serves as co-president of the science club she's a member of our math team our national honor society our multi and our multicultural club just to name a few of her commitments this fall dartmouth high school's loss will be the university of virginia's gain as grace plans to continue her education at uva where she'll major in biology with a possible minor in spanish it's my honor to be able to recognize grace this evening as one of the two recipients of the superintendent's excellence award the second recipient of the superintendent's excellence award is miguel pereira academically miguel has displayed an extraordinary record of achievement at dartmouth high school miguel has taken and successfully completed many of the most rigorous courses offered at dartmouth high school enrolling in nine advanced placement courses over the past four years and again in addition to the academic excellence that miguel has displayed he's also been an integral member of the dartmouth high school community miguel currently serves as president of the dartmouth high school chapter of the national honor society he is a member of the multicultural club he is a member of our math team he too was a contestant in dartmouth's finest uh this year and he's also held many of the lead roles in dartmouth high school theater productions over the past several years perhaps most admirable about miguel is his commitment to the school community this summer miguel attended a leadership training and then with peers from across massachusetts miguel formed an online tutoring service that he continues to serve in as a tour to this day tutoring students from across the globe in english and science miguel will be missed at dartmouth high school next year and we wish him well as he continues his education at fordham university in new york where he'll major in neuroscience on a pre-med track miguel's long-term goal is to become a doctor and to one day serve in uh to serve in doctors without borders i want to congratulate and wish the best of luck to both grace and miguel and their families and as they are both very deserving of tonight's certificate event excellence [Applause] and if you wouldn't mind coming forward to receive your certificate that's not the view that i want all right so representatives evan can i ask you to do your best teacher's voice it's hard to hear with mass and sorry i know you don't have one yet but it's hard to hear so i know from sitting over there if you could like yell that would be awesome so i'm evan garcia and i'm one of the two student representatives to the school committee and i'm here to update you on all of the happenings at dartmouth high school currently going on so our music department has had several concerts earlier in this month including in front of small audiences at each so that is of course a great milestone our spring sports season is also underway and it has been hugely successful many sports including unified track are having their first meets and games in almost two years due to covert 19.

there were many local and regional groups to celebrate leadership and service and wonderful students before that but no nationwide organization had ever been founded under the leadership of dr edward reinerson he was the principal in pittsburgh an organization grew um from that little fifth avenue school to more than a thousand chapters by 1930 and we're up to you know thousands of chapters around the world it's got a constitution and an emblem and all of those things point back to the four pillars of this organization you're going to hear a little bit about each of these today from our students who will explain it way better than i ever could but just to get us started the purpose of this organization for all of us is to create enthusiasm for scholarship we're going to work hard to be the best students that we can number two to stimulate desire um and rendering of service how can we help our fellow man number three to promote leadership what does it mean to be a leader in a school especially a school of 4 400 students and lastly how do we ensure that we're developing men and women of great character in our secondary schools so those are the four things that you're going to hear a little bit about today but i think before i turn it over to the kids um i want to say this to our inductees and i think this is an important point and a difference that you need to be aware of national honor society is not a trophy it's not something that you earn and you set on a shelf and you just walk away from it's an organization it's a group and we're dedicated to help helping our community and helping to make our school a better place and so for all of you i challenge you over the next year or two that you're at stevenson work hard work hard to help this be the best organization it can be work hard to achieve those values of scholarship and service and leadership and character don't think of this as a moment in time something to put on your college application think of it as an organization that can help change and better this school every day so i really want to challenge you to that and to that point just one last thing one last thought and then i will turn it over to the kids um i want to think a little bit about this idea of leadership for a moment just yesterday i don't know if any of you were able to attend but we held our first ever prom right here on stevenson's campus we called it the promise anybody there yeah got a couple of a couple of applause yeah all right i hope you enjoyed yourselves i will tell you um i've been here for 10 years as principal it was uh one of the best events that i've ever been a part of partly because um you know we just missed that interaction with kids and seeing seeing their happiness seeing how excited they were um watching them get dressed up and sort of that transformation into young adults was fantastic but after the last 16 months it was even more even more meaningful for all of us and i think the thing that struck me the most was this was not prom it wasn't prom like you all moms and dads you went to prom when you were kids it didn't look like that didn't look like the prom i went to it didn't look like any of the nine proms that i've come to before from stevenson but it was a fantastic experience and so here's my challenge to you all the new inductees how do we return to school next year we're going to have a phenomenal opportunity to change the way that we work as a school and if we're going to be the leaders of that school you're as much responsible for that work as us and we are more than happy to work with you to make that happen what are lessons from the last 15 or 16 months we can take away to make this a better school how can this group help to make the rest of the student body move forward when we have the freshmen come next year there's going to be 500 sophomores who've never been in the building yet what are we going to do as leaders to help them with that transition i'm so thrilled to have this group of talented kids to help us with that and i'm going to leave you with one last thing from adlai one other quote he said every age needs people who will redeem the time by living with a vision of the things that are to be i can't wait to find out what the things that are to be for us so one last round of applause for the folks that are getting inducted can't wait and now we are going to hear from some of our senior officers and they're going to discuss those four pillars we're going to start with scholarship let me bring to the stage james kim thank you mr gobble hello everyone my name is james kim and i'm a current executive board member of the national honor society and once again i want to congratulate you on your induction to nhs with that said i want to begin by talking to you about one of our fillers which is scholarship when it comes to scholarship you might first think of the gpa requirement to be a part of the national honor society however in reality scholarship means more than more than just getting good grades for us for nhs members scholarship represents our desire to learn new things and to approach them with the welcoming attitude we strive not only to make ourselves better in the classroom but outside the classroom as well this desire to learn translates to a desire to make a difference in the community and to experience various service opportunities that we can grow from for example as an nhs member you might find yourself at homes middle school for our service outreach program tutoring middle schoolers and spreading this value of scholarship furthermore scholarship also represents our work ethic and a sense of responsibility as high school students we dedicate our time and effort to participate in class keep up with homework and study for tests this is a determination and endurance will also be a major factor when it comes to service because it allows us to make a consistent impact over a long period of time which can build up throughout the year you'll have the opportunity to participate regularly in service opportunities such as attending community meetings for planning for events like street fest giveathon blood drives and more in the upcoming year as nhs members i encourage you all to uphold this pillar of scholarship whether that be in class or during nhs service events i hope that through your participation you can learn ways to make a big difference in yourself and the community thank you with that said i'll be introducing our next speaker which is noah sevcik who'll be talking about leadership hello everyone i'm noah sevcheck i'm another member of our national honor society executive board before i begin i'd like to tell a short story about a service experience i've had during my time here at stevenson as a junior back when life was still normal i was sitting in the performing arts center with my freshman during our advisory as i looked over i watched my freshman joke and laugh with each other after hours of nervous apprehension despite listening to them mumble under their breath for hours about how pointless advisory was i was glad to see that they were becoming comfortable in the unfamiliar environment of stevenson although they would never acknowledge it us fmps are there to affect those that we mentor from day one and i'm here to talk about that effect some of you are fmps some of you are older siblings like myself and some of you are captains of your sports teams yet i know that your leadership experiences extend far beyond that of sibling duties or captainships in this club you have the choice to expose yourself to a myriad of leadership opportunities and i'm here to talk about that at giveathon you lead other students in organizing gifts to children in need and what might be a time commitment an effort or just a point on a resume for you may be one of the happiest days of that kid's life with our global goals project you lead a group of students in writing to a nursing home and just like that kid those nursing home residents may find it to be the best part of their week reading your letters your actions as a leader in this club make kids smile without your leadership without your drive to do good in our community he wakes up on christmas morning without a gift without your leadership no letters go out to seniors and without your leadership this club ceases to function what we do doesn't happen without you taking charge and leading others to complete our mission now even despite your genuine leadership you might very well be sitting in your chair thinking of nhs as a means to an end another accolade on a college resume and when i sat in your seat two years ago i thought the same thing i laughed at the idea that my actions as a leader could affect change in my community of course how can i one singular person from a suburb that nobody's heard about changed someone's life but the kid who is on the other end of your leadership experiences is not thinking the same thing i'm not here to lecture you on what a leader looks like or what we think a leader should look like because we don't really know either you can be a leader in this club no matter who you are what you've done or what traits you have all you need to do is step up because in reality making somebody feel good does not take much of your time it is your individual drive to do good in our community that gets things done and that drive is why you all have tremendous leadership potential i'm excited to see where that potential takes you in your remaining time at stevenson so while you're here lead your peers but most importantly lead yourself to serve our mission of bettering our communities our nhs chapter will not create world peace or end cyclical poverty in one fell swoop not even the united nations can really do that yet it makes you feel good knowing that you've made somebody else's day no matter how big or small the action was you have the power to do that so remember the real people who are on the other end of your leadership just like that kid take charge to make sure they end their days with a smile on their face too thank you and now shreya will be introducing our next pillar thank you noah hi everyone my name is shrey mumati and i'm one of this year's e-board members it's amazing seeing all of you here and even more amazing that you're all about to be inducted into nhs i remember when i was first inducted into nhs and how intimidated i was by the sheer size of it i didn't know how i would make an impact in an organization that's so big but i found my way in one of the key foundational pillars of nhs service what makes nhs special is its commitment to the betterment of our community as a whole rather than just within stevenson our members constantly strive to become part of a community around them by spending hours days or even weeks to help those in need not only does service give members of the stevenson community a way to serve our own community but it gives insight into the lives of people around us while either helping organize an event raise money or lead service allows us to build a connection to empathize and to increase our involvement in our communities service is not just something that fulfills a requirement or looks good on application it's something that makes you feel grateful as you witness all it has to offer through events hosted by our own school we see how simple acts of service can range from giving the gift of joy to a child on christmas morning or giving the gift of employment to adults with autism and so much more service is in is infinitely diverse and this quality is one of the reasons it's always been such a prominent pillar of nhs being a part of this organization we invite you to explore the diversity opportunity and experiences service has to offer we hope to see you participate create and commit to fundamental values embedded within our organization but most of all we want you to find passion in it we implore you to look beyond simple requirements and to find passion in connecting with the people around you and the community within and to cherish the experiences you become a part of don't get me wrong not every act of service is a fiery act of passion because sometimes service just isn't like that sometimes service is about considering the bigger picture and knowing that even though your work may seem small in the face of a huge crisis it's efforts like yours that make a difference service varies greatly in its influence and here at nhs we hope you choose to take part in all it has to offer thank you and now i'd like to introduce malham sheikh who will be talking about our pillar of character thank you treya good afternoon and congratulations to our newly inducted national honor society members my name is mohammed shaikh and i serve on this year's national honor society executive board today i will be speaking about the character pillar henry david thoreau once said you cannot dream yourself into a character you must hammer and forge yourself one as high school students we are at a ripe age to build our character and embody characteristics that we will uphold for the rest of our lives our character defines how we treat one another and the values we represent quality such as integrity respect compassion and optimism can be shown through simple actions such as helping a friend with homework or larger actions such as fundraising and campaigning for a school event stevenson is full of students who embody outstanding character if you look around you'll see students who spend hours running school-wide events and who are always willing to reach out and help others throughout high school there are many obstacles and crossroads that we will have to face especially at an amazing school like stevenson however the way you persevere through these hardships allows you to build your character nhs will prepare you all for personal development growth and realization being surrounded by the most resilient hard-working individuals you'll ever meet will motivate you to become a better person your character thus far has allowed you to join the stevenson nhs chapter and now you will become the role models that younger generations will look up to feel free to take risks and to stand up for what you believe in as this allows for change to be initiated into progress especially through your service activities inspire the kids through homes tutoring to join you on this journey for growth and motivate your fellow peers to participate in events such as giveathon or bernie's book bank just remember that nobody is perfect and how we react to our mistakes is also a representation of our character each and every one of us has unique qualities and is our responsibility as nhs members to go out there and uphold our moral codes with good intentions thank you [Applause] we will now be introducing our induction video for this year which kind of represents all of the events that nhs does and just kind of embodies all the four characteristics that we just spoke about [Applause] okay thank you once again to leila kenny and desegna for that amazing induction video we really appreciate that and we know how much time you spend on that and once again thank you and so my name is arthur breznikov and we're going to continue with the nhs pledge so i'd like to ask all the current inductees to stand up and put their right hand up and repeat after me okay i pledge to maintain high scholastic standing to hold as fundamental and worthy and untarnished character to endeavor intelligently and courageously to be a leader and to give myself freely in service to others in doing so i shall prove worthy of a place in the national honor society congratulations inductees you are now officially a part of stevenson's chapter of natural honor society now i'd like to welcome mr erdmann stevenson's national honor society chapter uh sponsor to the podium congratulations on your nhs induction this will look great on your college resume it's a milestone that will distinguish you from other people and get you one step closer to that great school where you'll finally be incredibly happy it's a prestigious award recognizing all the great things you've done it's an honor that opens doors for you it means that you're smart accomplished and destined for greatness no no none of these things really ring true being inducted means that you've been identified as having potential in fact the word induction is defined as bringing about or giving rise to something induction is not a celebration of our shared awesomeness and our golden futures we're here to celebrate the fact that 426 individuals with a variety of interests and skill sets can expand the ability of our organization to help the poor disconnected and disenfranchised we're also celebrating that you get to have a powerful service learning experience through your work in our organization it is our hope that you will leave nhs transformed with the abilities and passion to affect meaningful change in the world i know some people in the audience are saying yes yes of course service to others but there has to be some individual benefit prior to the covid pandemic a consortium of decision makers from over 80 universities including harvard and yale organized a group called making caring common in 2016 they released a report entitled turning the tide inspiring concern for others and the common good through college admissions although selective in their admission standards these universities had come to the realization that they had been admitting the wrong type of student former yale professor and author william darashevitz dubbed these students excellent sheep in his book dara shevitz writes that the system manufactures students who are smart and talented and driven yes but also anxious timid and lost with little intellectual curiosity and a stunted sense of purpose trapped in a bubble of privilege heading neatly in the same direction great at what they're doing but with no idea why they're doing it as a group these universities have decided to re-examine their admission policies they're de-emphasizing act and sat scores in some cases making them optional they're limiting the number of activities that students can list on their apps putting the focus on student reflections they're encouraging fewer ap courses wow what are they looking for now passion authenticity and kindness and the cove pandemic has just really reinforced all these traits that they're looking for these are things that are hard to fake and require a robust sense of self they also require legitimate and challenging experiences working with other human beings so what will your nhs membership card and pin do for you nothing even colleges and universities admit that the designation alone is largely meaningless however and here's here's the big however you can work with us to acquire the skills and mindsets to be the type of person that you'd like to see attending harvard yale the university of illinois the college of lake county or yes even augustana college that's my alma mater i had to give it a shout out and college admissions has nothing to do with why we do this we serve because it's the right thing to do in nhs you can serve in hundreds of different ways you can lead amazing events you can do work that is specific to your passions and meaningful to you you can become the type of person you'd like to see doing stem research passing laws in the illinois legislature or growing carrots on an organic form ultimately the honor and national honor society has nothing to do with awards accolades elite universities prestigious associations or professions it's simply about how we carry ourselves and the intentional drive to help others our seniors graduate very soon and they understand the meaning of honor they've left a strong foundation for you to continue to expand the capacity of nhs to serve those in need today we also address another transition i call this the changing of the guard we say goodbye to our current executive board and officially transfer power to the newly elected board and these chairs before you are 12 extraordinary individuals who have led the stevenson chapter of the national honor society through its most challenging year in school history most importantly i want to recognize them for all the things that can't be measured the wonderful memories eighth period zoom meetings filled with energetic idea sharing and silliness the creative reimagining of school events to work in virtual and hybrid environments and the simple day-to-day interactions where i was able to watch you grow up eboard i'm proud of your past accomplishments and i'm hopeful that your future paths lead to fulfillment and happiness but i'm most proud of who you are i'm proud of the things you did with no expectations of receiving anything in return you gave freely in the hopes of bringing about meaningful change in the lives of those who needed it you approached your work with passion purpose and a focus on engaging the community please stand when i call your name thank you so much for your service arthur bereznikov caroline mazur soraka david bayer emily kim james kim kenny wan leila wang maham sheikh [Applause] and last but not least tiffany lee and now i'd like to introduce the 2021 nhs executive board dylan ivanov jaden varghese janavi joshi jasmine's son josenya partha sarathy julia chen manal muhammad who couldn't be with us today olivia defalco prachi guillenmote richie zachariah who also couldn't be with us today shreya sharma and shoham sarkar and now please welcome sabrina [Applause] thank you mr erdmann hi everyone i'm sabrina kozrowitzki and now former member of the nhs executive board wow that's really crazy to say especially since the 12 of us have only met in person once other than filming that video you guys saw today so i don't know if you know this but our sponsor's most important role is keeping us from getting too violent when we fight i'm kidding of course but really this year our sponsors were tasked with getting us to talk to each other in the first place we might think that a mute button in real life is great but our board can attest that it's really not so i can joke all i want about this year but we really could not have had one of our most successful giveathons created global goals or resale riverside events for the first time without the help of our sponsors the four of them have been there for the twelve of us helping navigate through the crazy year of unknowns i would first like to start off by thanking mrs albert miss hike and mrs osick you guys were always available for whichever day the 13 of us decided on during our eighth period meetings you attended each one of our generals each semi-last minute committee meeting and any informational meeting that we hosted for our members we love all the creative and organizational input you are always willing to give and of course mrs albert's jokes that always lighten the mood thank you so much for supporting and always being there for us and lastly on behalf of the rest of eboard i would like to thank mr erdmann he is a sponsor who is not only there to improve the quality of our membership or the service opportunities we present to our membership but also to improve the quality of us as people i don't think any of us can deny that we have learned so much from mr erdmann and maybe even a little bit more than in some of our classes this year this organization would not have been the same without him there is no one more committed to teaching students that service can be a part of everyday life than mr erdmann thank you so much for guiding us our e-board new e-board and in the near future our inductees a new e-board although you may not have the opportunity to be with mr erdman every single day during 8th period next year i'm sure you'll still hear enough of his dad jokes and many many important life lessons thank you so much to all of our amazing sponsors and now i present to you caroline mazur soraka with the final speech today thank you sabrina as our induction ceremony comes to a close it is time to celebrate and welcome you to stevenson's national honor society my name is caroline mazer soraka and i'm beyond excited to have you join me my peers and our sponsors in taking our four pillars in stride to impact our community though this past year has brought its difficulties you are here today because you have persevered and continued to uphold your scholarship leadership service and character even among the most challenging of times your membership in nhs is truly more than recognition over the next one or two years you are given the platform to plan fundraise and help those in your surrounding community who need it most so come to street fest and learn about the charities we're supporting save three lives by donating to our blood drive lead your classmates to support a family in need as a giveth on leader and promote participation in st baldrick's to your friends and family members and maybe even shave your head if you're feeling adventurous rather than simply accruing service hours you have so many outlets to channel your individual interests towards creating your own impact on the community more than anything being a member of national honor society is an opportunity one that can only achieve its highest potential with your effort and dedication pursue the causes that you are passionate about and you will find a community of fellow members who will support or join your initiative our national honor society's success is reliant on shared service advocacy that now as an inductive member you can be an even greater part of every student here who has spoken to you was once seated in the audience of an nhs induction ceremony just like you are here today though we were a little more crammed together in the performing arts center while there have been numerous adaptations since we were in your position the collective determination of national honor society members to serve the community has stayed the same and continues with you it is your time now to celebrate your induction we see your potential to uphold your scholarship lead among your peers become a service advocate and exemplify strong character thank you for your service and leadership contributions to the world so far and i look forward to the impact you will make for the next few years and beyond congratulations on your membership in nhs our induction ceremony has officially concluded so you are all free to go and thank you so much for coming today if you'd like to take some pictures you can take any over here and we also have our four pillar flags hanging right behind that set of stadium bleachers so thank you all right good afternoon everyone what a glorious afternoon to come together and celebrate the work of some of our students um i want to kick off the ceremony today with a big round of applause for all of our inductees let's hear it for the folks that are coming into our national honor society congratulations on this honor my name is uh troy gobble and i am honored to be the principal of stevenson high school and uh each year we get a chance to really celebrate the work of a fantastic group of our students and this year uh all of you are out here in the crowd we've got about 426 inductees uh we've done two ceremonies so this is the second half of the group um i like to rely back on adelaide stevenson and some of the quotes that he's done over time using our namesake at a graduation ceremony in 1956 one of the things that he left with that group of graduates was a statement he said when you leave here don't forget why you came and i think that's an important graduation statement but i think it's just as important for this organization so i want you to take a second and i just want you to contemplate why why are we here why are you here um inductees why did you make this choice and this year for the first time ever typically when we do these inductions we have all the students in the front all the families in the back to celebrate but today i want to take advantage of the idea that we're sitting together so i want you to turn uh turn to your student and uh students our inductees you just filled out an application to join nhs i want you to share with your family what was what were you most proud of on that application so when you took some time to share that application with us what was the idea that you were most proud of go ahead turn and talk to the folks next to you what were you most proud of in your application all right thank you very much for sharing that idea i think it's important that we think through that and again that's part of this idea when you leave here today don't forget why you came those are the ideas about why you came to this organization and i want to spend a minute just give you a little history lesson uh national honor society was founded in it was created by a group of national high school principals that wanted to recognize and really empower students to lead and change the buildings they were in when they created this new organization there were four pillars that are at the fundamental nature of this group and you are going to hear some students come up and reflect on those pillars in a minute let me just tell you a little bit about them the purpose of national honor society shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship number one is scholarship number two to stimulate a desire to render service for others so service number three to promote leadership how do we help our students become better leaders in their organization and lastly to develop character in the students to raise those wonderful men and women who will eventually be leading our community and our country so how do we work on how do we talk about these four things i think um one thing you're going to hear loud and clear today and i want to i want to start off with this the journey of becoming a member of the national honor society it is not it's not a trophy this is not one of those things like when you win you know you win the local championship in baseball and you put that trophy on your desk and it's done when you become a member of national honor society that's the beginning of the journey right and so this is a commitment to helping this school and your community become a better place i want to spend just a minute or two talking about this idea of leadership before i turn it over to the kids yesterday i don't know if any of you were here i was lucky enough and a few of us were lucky enough to attend our prom activity yesterday we called it prom ish and it was uh quite honestly one of my favorite experiences in my ten years as being principal and i think because we came together to develop an idea of what prom could be the students that were in that group the adults it didn't look like prom that any of you had ever went to it didn't look like the prom that i went to as a kid it didn't look like the last nine years of prom but it was still an opportunity for that group of students to get together to you know to dress up act like an adult for the night have a great time see each other and really um just get to be a high school kid a thing that we've missed a lot this year and then we got all done with the ceremony i'm like this was this was awesome how amazing was it that we came together and we thought differently we created this experience and so here's my challenge to you if leadership is a fundamental part of the national honor society inductees i want you to think what are you gonna do over the next year or two as a member of national honor society to make this a better school and quite honestly at the point we're in right now with the things that have happened over the last 14 months when we come to back to school in the fall when we get back to the school it's gonna be different right hopefully it's not different worse hopefully it's different better what are the things we're going to do to work what will returning to school look like how are we going to use the lessons in the last 15 months to make this a better institution to make it a better place for kids so we learn more and we can better serve our community how will you help lead the student body forward in the fall those are the questions that i want you to consider today we're going to need your help with that and everything else as we come back but before i turn it over to the kids i'm going to ask one last time for a big round of applause for our inductees as we head off on that journey and now it is my honor to introduce um our students as they're going to introduce to you these four pillars we're going to start with the pillar of scholarship and let me bring james kim up to the podium hello everyone my name is and i'm a current executive board member of the national honor society and once again i would like to congratulate you on your induction to nhs with that said i want to begin by talking to you about one of our four pillars which is scholarship when it comes to scholarship you might first think of the gpa requirement to be a part of the national honor society however in reality scholarship means more than just maintaining good grades to us for nhs members scholarship represents our desire to learn new things and to approach them with a welcoming attitude we strive not only to make ourselves better in the classroom but outside the classroom as well and this desire to learn translates to our desire to make a difference in the community and to experience various service opportunities in which we can grow from for example as an nhs member you might see yourself at homeless middle school for our service outreach program tutoring middle schoolers and spreading this value scholarship furthermore scholarship also represents our work ethic and a sense of responsibility as high school students we dedicate our time and effort to participate in class keep up with homework and study the tests this determination and endurance will also be a major factor when it comes to serving the community since it allows us to make a consistent impact that can build over time throughout the year you'll have the opportunity to participate regularly in service opportunities such as attending community meetings to plan for events like street fest giveathon blood drive and more in the upcoming year as nhs members i encourage you all to uphold this pillar of scholarship whether that be in class or during nhs service events i hope that through your participation you can learn ways to make a big difference in yourself and the community thank you with that said i'll turn it over to noah he'll be talking about leadership hello everyone i'm noah i'm another member of our lovely national honor society executive board before i begin i'd like to tell a short story about a service experience i've had during my time here at stevenson as a junior back when our life was still normal i was sitting in the performing arts center during our freshman orientation day as i looked over i watched my freshman joke and laugh around with each other after hours of nervous apprehension despite listening to them mumble under their breath for hours about how pointless advisory was i was glad to see them become comfortable in the environment of stevenson and although they would never acknowledge it us fmps are here to affect those that we mentor in positive ways from day one i'm here to talk about that effect now some of you are fmps some of you are older siblings some are captains of your sports teams yet your leadership experiences extend far beyond that of sibling duties obligations or captainships in this club you have the choice to expose yourself to a myriad of leadership opportunities and i'm here to talk about just that at givathon you lead other students in organizing gifts to be delivered to children in need and what might be a time commitment an effort or a point on a resume for you may be one of the happiest days of that kid's life with our global goals project you lead a group of students in writing to a nursing home and just like that kid those nursing home residents may find it to be the best part of their week reading your letters your actions as a leader in this club make kids smile and without your leadership without your drive to do good in the community he wakes up on christmas morning without a gift without your leadership no letters go out to seniors without your leadership this club ceases to function what we do just doesn't happen without you taking charge and getting others to complete our mission even despite your genuine leadership that has brought you here today you might very well be sitting in your chair thinking of nhs as a means to an end or another accolade on a college resume when i sat in your seat two years ago i thought the same thing i laughed at the idea that my actions as a leader could be making any difference in my community of course how could i a singular person from a suburb that nobody has ever heard about actually make a positive change in my community but the kid or the nursing home resident who's on the other end of your leadership is not thinking the same thing now i'm not here to lecture you on or what we think a leader should look like you can be a leader in this club no matter who you are what traits you have or what you've done all you need to do is step up because in reality making someone feel good does not take much of your time it is your individual drive to do good things that improves our community that drive is why you all have tremendous leadership potential i'm excited to see where that potential takes you in your remaining time at stevenson so while you're here lead your peers but most importantly lead yourself to serve our mission of benefiting our communities our nhs chapter will not end cyclical poverty nor will it create world peace yet it makes you feel good knowing that you've made someone else's day just one person no matter how big or small that action was you have the power to do that so please remember the real people on the other end of your leadership take charge to make sure they end their days with a smile on their face too [Applause] service hi everyone my name is trey mimadi and i'm one of this year's executive board members of nhs it's amazing seeing you all here seeing all of you here today and even more amazing that you're all about to be inducted into nhs i remember when i was first inducted into nhs and how intimidated i was by the sheer size of it i don't know how i would make an impact in an organization that was so huge but i found my way in one of the key foundational pillars service what makes nhs special is its commitment to the betterment of our community as a whole rather than just within stevenson our members constantly strive to become part of the community around them by spending hours days or even weeks to help those in need not only does service help members of the stevenson community to help their community but it also gives insight into the lives of the people around them while either helping organize an event raise money or lead service allows us to build a connection to empathize and to increase our awareness about our own community service isn't just something that fulfills a requirement or looks good on an application it's something that makes you feel grateful as you witness all it has to offer through events hosted by our own school we see how simple acts of service can range from giving the gift of joy to a child on christmas morning to giving the gift of employment to an adult with autism and so much more service is infinitely diverse and this quality is one of the reasons it's always been such a prominent pillar in nhs being a part of this organization we invite you to explore the diversity opportunity and experience the service has to offer we hope to see you participate create and commit to this fundamental value embedded in our organization but most of all we want you to find passion in it we implore you to look beyond simple requirements and to find passion in connecting with the people and community around you and to cherish experiences that you become a part of don't get me wrong not every event is going to be a moment of some fiery passion but sometimes service just isn't like that this is about considering the bigger picture and knowing that even though your work may seem tiny in the face of a huge crisis it's efforts like yours that make a huge difference and here at nhs we hope you choose to take part in all service has to offer thank you and next i'd like to introduce mahamsheik who will be talking about our pillar of character thank you sreya good afternoon and congratulations to our newly inducted national honor society members my name is maham shaikh and i serve on the current national honor society executive board today i will be speaking about the character pillar henry david thoreau once said you cannot dream yourself into a character you must hammer and forge yourself one as high school students we are at a ripe age to build our character and embody characteristics that we will uphold for the rest of our lives our character defines how we treat one another and the values we represent quality such as integrity respect compassion and optimism can be shown through simple actions such as helping a friend with homework or larger actions such as fundraising and campaigning for a school event stevenson is full of students who embody outstanding character if you look around you'll see students who spend hours running school-wide events and who are always willing to help to reach out and help others throughout our high school journeys there are many obstacles and crossroads that we have to face especially at an amazing school like stevenson however the way you persevere through these hardships allows you to build your character nhs will prepare you for personal development growth and realization being surrounded by the most resilient hard-working individuals you'll ever meet will motivate you to become a better person your character thus far has allowed you to join the stevenson nhs chapter and now you will become the role models that younger generations will look up to feel free to take risks and to stand up for what you believe in as this allows for change to be initiated into progress especially through your service activities inspire the kids through homes tutoring to join you on this journey for growth and motivate your fellow peers to participate in events such as just remember that nobody is perfect and how we react to our mistakes is also a representation of our character each and every one of us has unique qualities and is our responsibility as nhs members to go out there and uphold our moral codes with good intentions thank you we will now be introducing our induction video for this year which showcases many of the nhs events that we do and upholds all of the four pillars and all the four pillars that we just talked about hello everyone my name is arthur bresnikov and i serve on this year's national honor society executive keyboard so unfortunately that video was cut short due to some technical issues but i want to thank laila kenny and jacenya for helping edit that together i know they spent a lot of time on this and it turned out great and it would not have been possible without them so i want to transition next to our national honor society pledge and i would like to ask all our current inductees to stand up raise their right hand and repeat after me okay i pledge to maintain high scholastic standing to hold as fundamental and worthy and untarnished character to endeavor intelligently and courageously to be a leader and to give of myself freely in service to others in doing so i shall prove worthy of a place in the national honor society congratulations inductees you are now officially a part of stevenson's chapter of national honor society next i would like to introduce mr urban one of the nhs sponsors it's inductees this will look great on your college resume it's a milestone that will distinguish you from other people and get you one step closer to that great school where you'll finally be incredibly happy it's a prestigious award recognizing all the great things you've done it's an honor that opens doors for you it means that you're smart accomplished and destined for greatness i see some people smiling so you're getting the joke like no no um none of these things really ring true being inducted means that you've been identified as having potential in fact the word induction is defined as bringing about or giving rise to something it's a beginning induction is not a celebration of our shared awesomeness and our golden futures we're here to celebrate the fact that 427 individuals with a variety of interests and skill sets can expand the ability of our organization to help the poor disconnected and disenfranchised we're also celebrating that you get to have a powerful service learning experience through your work in our organization it is our hope that you'll leave nhs transformed with the abilities and passion to affect meaningful change in the world i know some people in the audience are saying yes of course service to others but there also has to be some sort of individual benefit well prior to the covet pandemic a consortium of decision makers from over universities including harvard and yale organized a group called making caring common in 2016 they released a report entitled turning the tide inspiring concern for others in the common good through college admissions although selective in their admission standards these universities had come to the realization that they had been admitting the wrong type of student former yale professor and author william darachevitz dubbed these students excellent sheep in his book dara shevitz writes that the system manufactures students who are smart and talented and driven yes but also anxious timid and lost with little intellectual curiosity and a stunted sense of purpose trapped in a bubble of privilege heading neatly in the same direction great at what they're doing but with no idea why they're doing it when i first read that i thought wow somebody woke up grumpy this morning um but as a group these universities have decided to re-examine their admissions policies they're currently de-emphasizing act and sat scores in some cases making them optional they're limiting the number of activities that students can list on their apps putting the focus on student reflection and they're encouraging fewer ap courses wow what are they looking for now well it's passion authenticity and kindness yes you heard that correctly these are things that are hard to fake and require a robust sense of self they also require legitimate and challenging experiences working with other human beings so what will your nhs membership card and pin do for you nothing even colleges and universities admit that the designation alone is largely meaningless however and this is the big however you can work with us to acquire the skills and mindset to become the type of person that you'd like to see attending harvard yale the university of illinois the college of lake county res even augustana college that's my alma mater you know i had to give it a shout out in nhs you can serve in hundreds of different in hundreds of different ways you can lead amazing events you can do work that is specific to your passions and meaningful to you you can become the type of person you'd like to see doing stem research passing laws in the illinois legislature or growing carrots on an organic farm ultimately the honor and national honor society has nothing to do with awards accolades elite universities prestigious associations or professions it's simply about how we carry ourselves and the intentional drive to help others our seniors they graduate soon and they understand the meaning of honor they've left a strong foundation for you to continue to expand the capacity of nhs to serve those in need today we also moved i have a motion by miss waite can i have a second second second by mr oliver are there any discussion on the regular and joint session minutes from april 26th uh hearing none all in favor opposed all right so that motion carries unanimously right we're in person so we don't have to do a roll call i'm getting back into the swing of things all right so next i will entertain a motion uh to approve the executive session minutes from april 26th so moved so move madam chair with the stipulation that they be held until the matter for which they were intended is completed uh so i have a motion for mr news i have a second oh second second from miss wait all right so is there any discussion on the executive session minutes hearing none all in favor aye aye opposed all right that motion carries unanimously as well um let's go ahead and move on to the consent agenda um madam chair there might be a mix-up the officers might have thought this was a zoom meeting so we're not sure they're going to show up so we'll move that's all right we'll just keep moving through and if they can get here that's great that's fine although i don't know you know that after it's afterwards but we'll see what we can do um if they if they can't make it mr tebow tell them not to panic maybe they could record something for us um that we could probably play at our next meeting i think that would probably work if they can't make it um you know i don't want to ask them to come after they're free at last right um so we'll we'll figure something out to get some input from them or maybe they could just zoom right into tonight's meeting i don't know if i want to put mr parotti on the spot we'll see right yeah we'll work on this we'll work on this we'll figure something out we'll get there let's start with the consent agenda um we have the summer arts camp um uh item on our consent agenda and the request for the dhs marching band and color guard to operate food concession um at the dartmouth living memorial stadium for the 2021 football season um so do we want to take these separately does anyone have any questions about the arts camp emotional approve okay so i have a motion by mr nunes and a second by ms amarill is there any discussion or questions i know miss cronin's here ready to answer questions if anybody has any questions it's great to have them back yeah that's great yes we're excited to see these happening again it looks like an exciting program so yeah all right so hearing no further discussion all in favor aye aye all right so that motion passes unanimously our second one is the request for the dhs marching band and color guard to operate the food concession so moved i have a motion by mr nunes do i have a second okay a second by miss amaral do we have any um questions on this one i'm just so giddy that these things are i was just gonna say i'm just looking forward to seeing uh seeing the stadium used so the balloons are gonna fall down any minute yeah yes for her so nobody has any questions all right so hearing none all in favor aye aye opposed that motion also carries unanimously is there an abstention i'll abstain just because of my involvement okay so that motion carries four yes votes and one abstention from mr nunes thank you mr nunes we are all thanks for that thank you all right so um under under old business we have the equality and diversity committee um as you probably saw in the local news the equality and diversity committee um met for the first time i sweet last week two weeks like losing track of time now at any rate we had a discussion we started our conversation we did some introductions we reviewed the charge um it was a little hard right because everything's covered by open meeting laws so you can't pre-discuss everything but one of the things that we did discuss as a committee and the committee made a motion and wanted to come back and ask the full school committee was there was a request that we had allow for two student members of the committee the idea was if it was one student in a group of adults they might feel a little bit uncomfortable but having another student and someone who you know they might know might give them a higher level of comfort for the for those students on the committee to voice their opinions as a result because the composition of the committee is established by us this diversity committee has to come back to the full school committee and ask for permission for that so that is why that item is on the agenda we'd like to appoint two high school members go ahead mr nunes yeah madam chair uh i saw this on the agenda and i wasn't sure exactly what it was all about so i went back to my archive files and found the minutes from august 3rd of 2020 that we set up this formation and equity of the and diversity committee and uh on that uh motion that i made and you seconded uh i won't go through the whole motion.

but it says two dartmouth high school students we originally had two okay so i had i think we had somewhere that there was one so we already do have two i already have two one you already have two you have ten members two school committee members two public school uh faculty or staff two high school students two dartmouth community members and two dartmouth public school administrators okay so we added a third at some point we changed that we added a third staff member when we were evaluating the staff that's when we did that yes because we have uh miss masari miss chamberlain and who else am i forgetting now yeah she's the elementary school from quinn um so we at some point we made a motion we added three staff members because looking it was when we were looking at their resumes so that must have been in that would have been in december or january yes yes okay so then we don't need a motion so um i will let mr tebow know we um we were asking him to to locate two school committee uh two high school students um thank you for doing that research mr nunes no problem all right so we are on to new business the first item a new business is the smack quarterly report so i will look to mr oliver our representative to see if he has anything to report here so i did reach out to uh mrs catherine cooper who is the executive director there and uh yeah just a few things of that are worthwhile to know at our last board meeting we increased our district looking to increase our district-based classroom leases by three percent for the fy 22 school year increase our teacher and power salary skills in non-scale positions by two percent for the fy 22 year to end the extended covet leave on april 30th for our employees to receive accept and place on filed 100 compliance letters from deci this is regarding our fy 20 audit and annual report at smec we're really pleased about that we're also looking to renew our lease on the trip school in for haven for another five years we do have a program there and we're looking to renew the uh the lease there and this is a school that's no longer in use that the town of the faven school uh department has been leasing to us for our programs uh also to negotiate with the town of where this is actually ongoing uh negotiating with the town of fahaven for the rehab and potential lease of additional space at the former rogers school this is also for to expand some of our programs in addition we have let's see to recognize juneteenth june 19th on this saturday this year consistent with the secretary of state holiday observance guidelines and to build it into our calendar for the fy 22 school year which will be recognized on the monday since it will fall on the sunday so uh that's kind of where we're at i don't know if you dr gifford if you want to talk anything about the um the quinn program yet or if it's too early um i'm trying to remember if we can yeah as i um sent you an email a couple of weeks ago and i believe all the staff members have been notified okay i wasn't sure that's why yeah that's why i was a little hesitant but um we will bring that forth about um the change the closing of the path program at the quinn school and the lease for the um smack program um perfect yeah mr kylie will have that ready for the agenda for next time okay that's why i just hesitated a minute because you always make sure i have it here i had it here but i was i wanted to check with you first on that right but uh mr mr um grandfield has spoken to the staff about that so again we'll be able to talk about that more but we think it's a very good move for the district so it'll be on an upcoming agenda next next agenda okay and that's all i have for the uh the smack update okay does anybody have any questions for mr oliver thank you you're welcome no thank you no okay great um so the next item on our agenda is the new bedford regional vocation technical high school school committee on april 30th we received a letter notifying us that on may 1st the term of one of our appointees was expiring so we got plenty of notice there on that term expiration so we need to appoint someone to the school committee ms cindy marlins a term is expiring may 1st so that has expired that term um so we need to uh appoint or reappoint someone um i don't know have we reached out to cindy and asks if she's willing to serve again no i actually had i did actually reach out to cindy okay seeing this good because the letter was addressed to you i'll put it on you i did actually reach out to cindy and um yes she is still very interested in serving um serving on the new as the dartmouth wrap on the new bedford vocational school committee um i think she's done a great job a matter of fact she had just sent me a little not that long ago just some of the projects that she's been working on on school committee but i would certainly have no reservations she's you know she's continuing to work on updating school policies putting together and hiring a strong administration team that's experience as well as diverse so uh that's kind of where she was at but she would be uh thrilled to um continue her work there i would uh like to make a motion that okay go ahead point uh dr marlin to as a dartmouth representative on the school committee so i have a motion by miss amaral to re-appoint dr marlin do i have a second second though i have a second by mr oliver is there any further discussion or comment mr nunes thank you madam chair uh not on this but while we're talking about better volk uh have we heard any more about getting minutes from their meetings not that they're worth anything right on a related note no but i would like to ask perhaps dr marlins and as um mr shea i would like to invite them to a meeting maybe our july meeting to come give us a report i would like to hear from miss marlin herself dr marlin about what they're doing but i also would like to communicate again the need to get minutes and also the need to get actual information in minutes yeah the the minutes that ms ganther and dr gifford provide for our meetings are quite detailed you can tell what happens in our conversations if you can't watch the meetings that is not true of the the voc meeting so i would like to to follow up on that i do know that the superintendent i think reached out to many of us about setting up a meeting yeah um i'm gonna i haven't had a chance to reach out to him but i think perhaps we could all communicate that to him as we haven't had i haven't had we all got the same letter i haven't had a chance to get to i did reach out to mr watson and i'll be uh hoping uh in the next couple weeks to set up a time that works for both of us i think that might be something that it would be good if they could hear that from all of us it would it would definitely be helpful so we'll new administration coming into play and that's right that would that would be good um so is there any other discussion on the motion uh about dr marlin's reappointment well i'll just add that i believe we vote on it and then it'll go to the select board does the select board also have to vote on it and then it's a it's a decision between the chairs the chairs all the the two chairs and then the town moderator yeah yeah that's you that it's usually between the two the two chairs and the town moderator if there's people that you know they're not going to be reappointed okay that type of deal that's the way i understand yeah i think usually for a reappointment it's just a kind of pretty stream it's usually just the vote of the boards so uh can we can i ask uh dr gifford for for you to communicate that to the to the select board and follow up on that and then they can contact me if there are any issues there any other comments concerns discussion all right hearing none all in favor aye aye opposed all right that motion carries unanimously um the next item on our agenda is a proposal uh regarding naming the um basketball court um dr gifford do you have any do you want to yeah talk about that yeah thank you so i wanted to bring this forth because as you saw by the letter we received mr granfield not not quinn's principle but our basketball coach he submitted twice a letter of recommendation to name the court itself after um mr gaspar as you probably all know who he was but not to go into that particularly right now so i brought it forth as something that we might want to discuss but the process that we might want to undergo i did look through my files in the in the office and i did find a folder about it might have been the last time the group met when they named the quinn school they had a committee and they asked for recommendations and i know that's a big deal that was a big um you had to do that it was something you know it was going to be renamed exactly so the only at that time the policy that i found in the file folder was it was oh my goodness years old it was ff but it was called naming or renaming so it was either a new facility or to rename something old we obviously updated this in 2012 by policy ff and now it's just called naming new facilities and what the policy would be it's very very small but it does say again that we would follow a procedure of recommending names etc so for discussion my thinking is do we want to first before we consider any name of anything again if someone's put forth the court itself i think it's a wonderful gesture do we my thinking is we go back to the policy sub first and look at this policy and and address the process that we might want to undertake to do that so that's why i brought it forth comments or questions mr nunes go ahead thank you madam chair um yeah uh this is in all seriousness this is a great honor i mean i've had the privilege of knowing uh steve since high school and and such but uh dr gifford is right we do depending which way you want to follow this we've gotta we've done this a couple of different ways and that i think since the new policy went in in 2012 i don't think we've done it i don't think anything has happened per se [Music] but if you go back to the old policy and i remember when we put this in uh there was a long discussion on it because one of the things that somebody had in that policy was what they call a wow factor you know what made that person stand out above somebody else to make them make you know make them you know for that honor and such so you know you need to let it you know it was you know letters it was a committee letters of recommendation you know uh people you know talking how good he was or what was going on you know maybe former basketball student players you know teammates things of that nature for him and such and i agree with you know mr granfield i mean you've got you know it wouldn't be setting a precedent in the area per se because you've got you know in the bedford high school and you've got bishops uh durfee high school and i think i also think that uh for haven has it with theirs with the mellington jim and the wayne wilson basketball court i think i'm not sure but that rings a bell so i think that's what we have to do is you know there's got to be a committee together to to meet and solicit recommendations and you know is there anybody else out there that somebody maybe hasn't thought over you know over the over the years of you know the number of basketball coaches that we've had you know uh you know from this you know starting in the 60s anyway that i can remember and then going forward so you know i think that's what we have to just it's a great honor i don't have an issue with it but i just want to see the policy and procedures follow the way they originally were intended and set up back in the mid 90s so the question is whether i think i don't disagree with you i think the question i would ask you all is do we want to start for dr gifford's recommendation with looking at that policy in the policy subcommittee to make sure it's the policy we want to follow because i think you're right we have to have a policy we have to follow a process but because that policy is so old it may be something we want to review before we implement it i would agree i would agree i would have been okay that sounds good because again and this specifically says facilities you know i know we have various things it might be a library i think it's a good time to update a policy to um take all of those other things into consideration okay so the idea would be would go back to the policy committee the updated policy will come to us once we approve that we will then start that process to look at naming the basketball court right does that sound good to everyone that's fine yeah we don't need a motion on that right no no and i also just received notice that christian's on his way [Laughter] that's great he's probably he's like that's great and i i will also say right it's great that he will give him a minute to yeah um if if the clear that it wasn't a zoom meeting yeah if the if the class officers would like to film a video or something like that nothing that we don't have to do anything fancy right um they're welcome to do that and we would be happy to show that to us at our next meeting come on in relax take a deep breath first right a deep cleansing breath here yeah welcome and we apologize for the mix-up i know sometimes we're on zoom sometimes we're face-to-face we resume last time so i could see um how you might you might have uh made that mistake that's fine um we're not going to ask you i don't think there's a presentation we're not going to ask you to do a presentation no panic yeah um i think we just the committee um wanted to hear a little bit about your thoughts about how the school year went um and then maybe a chance to ask you a few questions so i'm going to ask you just one thing because we all have masks on and because it's loud in here these microphones are only carrying to the video feed so just use your like really loud teacher voice that you've heard for the last you know however many years uh so we could all hear you we would we would very much appreciate that okay sounds good you ready go right ahead why don't you why don't you introduce yourself tell us a little bit about yourself and then i want you to talk maybe about your year and give us some of your thoughts about how everything went yeah so my name is christian gavis silvera i'm the senior class president i also have sat on many committees throughout the year principal's advisory panel the safety committee for the school so you know i definitely have an adverse background on all different panels for the school this school year has definitely been a very unique one but i give extreme props to all the teachers and administrators because it has went surprisingly smooth with not not too many hiccups teachers were always very responsive if video went down or trying to keep kids engaged in their clat in classes and i know myself like i haven't really fallen behind much in my classes because of how understanding my teachers have been i know we've all you know we've all lost people and and we've all been through different situations because the pandemic and my teachers have been extremely understanding through all of the different circumstances going on in my life and in my peers lives um so i just i i think it went it's been extremely smooth and even the transition to fully in person it's been it's it's been extremely smooth you wouldn't even know that there was that we've been hybrid all year you know so that's my input towards that what questions do we have i'd like to open it up to the school committee to go ahead and ask questions uh mr oliver we're going to start down there that way it'll help me keep my pace all right well thank you for joining us tonight i appreciate your feedback and everything that's gone on here how do you find um the end of the year activities the planning for that as well as you know can you tell us a little bit about those end of the year activities yeah so as a lot of people know we we working alongside with administration and and my advisors we formed a 21 for 21 list 21 activities for the class of 2021 some were smaller activities some were bigger and it's it's been a little bit of a challenge pulling some of them off but we've we've done it for every single one no matter how last minute might have been or how quick it might have come we just had our um our formal dinner on thursday of last week which went really well for the senior class with you know we had a mentalist we had a magic show so i think kids had a lot of fun at that event as well in in all the events really i mean kids there haven't really been any complaints towards any of what we've done really that's awesome yeah so at first it was backlash i'm not gonna lie but that comes with everything you do you know so it's it's been it's been fun and it's been great to be able to provide a lot in which a lot of schools aren't providing a lot right now for their senior class just because of the restrictions everyone's under so it's been it's been very easy to work alongside administration and with our advisors that's awesome glad to hear it yeah yeah you'll always have the naysayers there right always what can you do absolutely thank you very much yeah of course uh mr nunes go ahead two quick questions nothing earth shattering yeah what are your plans for next year so i'm going to be working for my dad full-time but i'll be going to bcc at the same time in their business transfer program so i'm i'm definitely still going to stay very engaged in the community very i want to still work closely alongside you know the school system helping to improve things in whatever way i can but yeah and i guess the one that's a little bit more tough a little tougher is for you personally and your classmates how did it finally feel to have everybody together last week as school reopened to everyone amazing amazing i i haven't seen a lot of my friends faces in school since last march so a lot of my very close friends are in a different cohort so it has felt so much more normal and such a relief to be back in school with with everyone honestly and everyone's been great about about it it's a little tough with trying to social distance you have all the kids you know trying to keep everything organized but administration teachers everyone's been doing a good job to try to really keep things you know in in order so great welcome back and good luck thank you i really don't have a question for you i mean it's i enjoy hearing you know your plans for next year i just want to uh thank you for being like that constant you know accepting of the criticism and the backlash with all the planning um about your positivity and just being that constant kind of leader amongst your peers is really great because it hasn't been easy but it is what it is and and it's really nice to have people and i and i really appreciate your persistence with us and really being engaged with the process and trying to advocate for things over your course of your time here um it's always been a pleasure to hear from you and to kind of consider what you have you know what you've brought to us so i just you know your future is bright and and thank you for thank you for making it in person well thank you the confusion um appreciate it to agree with my colleagues again you know i've enjoyed meeting you you know through with some other things that you've done you know my uh he was a superhero in the princess parades around town so i really appreciated that um you know and i i think again you're extremely articulate well-spoken engaged i think you know i have to echo what kathleen said i think you have a really bright bright future and i certainly hope that you know you say we need people like you staying involved in our community you know absolutely that are you know younger engaged voices um you know there's a real need so i i feel confident that you're gonna be you know we'll continue to hear from you that this is not the last thing so i appreciate it if there's anything else you want to add or you know talk about too you know i know we've been talking about activities and things like that i know you've been you know advocating for you know some other things along the way too so you know yeah i mean i'm glad to talk about you know whatever we've talked about throughout the course of the years i just didn't know if you wanted me to specifically talk about the school year for for today so if we want to i can always come back another meeting to discuss those advocacy issues if you'd like okay well i think you're here so if you have issues that you want to bring up to us i don't want to pressure you but if you feel like there are issues to bring up that's part of why i think we wanted the senior class to be here our next meeting is after you graduate you are welcome to come and be here at the same point in time you drove here so if there are other issues that you um want to raise with us please take this opportunity to go ahead and do so now yeah i've you know over the years i've advocated for lots of different things um the thing that i've the most persistently advocated about has always been the student the student parking pass fees um and something that i've sent multiple emails about had numerous phone calls about and done a lot of research about into the budget and i guess what it has always boiled down to was regardless if we parked there or not the majority of the maintenance is occurring in the front law and this and in the fire lanes around the school so if we shut down the student law it wouldn't be saving the school much money so the amount that's being charged doesn't really you know compensate for it in that way it was just an issue that that i wanted to be looked into a little deeper maybe analyze a little bit more and consider like okay if we shut down this lot what would it cost um i i plow in the winter and i know that that student parking lot is the easiest thing to plow out of the whole school and plowing is the biggest expense for the from the lots from what i've understood from conversation so i just i always had a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact of charging i believe it was 60 dollars a car and then 30 after the half year for students this year they've been better about it because i mean look at what we're living through right now in in the financial situations but it's just it's it's always been an issue i've been persistent about so that's all that's that's my only ask is to just look further into that issue go ahead dr christian thanks again for running out and coming but i'm just curious um we hear a lot about mental health and and the stress that not only adults but students everyone has been going through do you have a what's your perception on how the students are handling this in general and if there's anything that you think more could be done or ideas about helping kids i'm sure you have a take because obviously you're listening to your friends etc i just want to hear what you're thinking i appreciate you bringing that up um because i'm going to be i'm going to be blatantly honest right now on on this live stream i personally lost someone to suicide throughout the pandemic and i truly feel in my heart that part of that of what happened was because of the way we've been living it was an older gentleman but still someone that hit very close to home so i know a lot of students are experiencing this in many different ways that they're not that you might not be thinking about i know i i see a social worker as many students in the school do and i know my social worker was very responsive when they found out reaching out to teachers teachers offering extensions on on assignments a lot of people have been very understanding because a lot of people understand how fragile this situation we're all been living through is i don't know what the school could necessarily do for more support just making sure students know it's okay to to reach out for support and it's normal you know it's not like for me to be up here and comfortable enough in front of everyone to say what i've been going through you know it's not easy but i want to do it so that way kids can understand it's okay to talk it's okay to to you know speak out about different issues going on so the school's done an amazing job trying to help in any way they can mentally for students as well so i will say that i deeply appreciate you saying that i've said a lot up here you know oftentimes we come and it's great to hear all of the good things that are happening in schools but i think it's also really important to recognize how difficult this has been and you know i i have a junior and senior it's hard on all kids but i really feel particularly for the seniors right who who you missed out on a lot of things that are you know part of a normal senior year and i appreciate all the work that you've done you know for the 21 but at the same point in time there's a lot you missed in the fall and there's a lot of other things you missed and so i try to talk about that too that it is normal we've had a lot of mental health problems in our house as well and so i do hope kids get that message and it is i think definitely something that we are going to pay attention to as we look at the lessons and think about what we're going to do right because everyone wants to talk about how the fall is normal but i want to avoid using that word because we're not there yet right there's a lot of things that we need to recover from from this i think it's been traumatic for a lot of people particularly for kids so i really appreciate you saying that and taking the time to you know to articulate that yeah i also just want to give you i don't necessarily disagree with you on the parking fee um if i had my brothers and i had a larger budget right i don't think we should charge any fees right i don't want athletic fees i don't want club fees i don't want but a perennial problem in this town is a lack of funding for our schools right and so that money that we're getting from parking fees is doing things and so we've got to figure out if we get rid of all of these fees how do we continue to do these things and a large portion like i'm looking at mr nunes the the music association which is the pride and joy of this you know this district rest on a lot of volunteer hours and a lot of volunteer money and so i don't want to dismiss your concerns but there's always a big shortage of money in this district and that's one of the difficulties is figuring out how to do the things we need to do um and you know to do it in an equitable way and so i i you know i i don't want to say that you know no or yes right it is something that i think we'll keep in mind but it it's something that we have to figure out because money not coming in means less money to do things and we we'd have to figure out how to do that yeah i've and i've always understood all that because i've always you know i've i advocated for teachers for students you know for trying to get more money towards our budget that's you know those are things i've always advocated towards and you know but i've always looked at it as the music program is for is one group of kids the uh the sports or another group of kids there's registration fees for all sorts of things but the parking lot is is a public infrastructure in which so many people use the plows there's so much damage in the parking lot from them plowing alone i don't know if the plow companies were charged for that damage i know there were curbs displaced there was asphalt displaced you know i know there's damage in the front lot from teacher cars from leaking oil you know it and it also there's damage at the other parking lots as well but those are covered so it's more about i understand we need the money but i don't know if it's the right way to get the money kind of thing you know what i mean so maybe if it's when you go to propose the budget you have a little increase in the maintenance budget and if they knock it down well at least you tried but you know i i think i think if we don't at least try to eliminate that fee then we're not going to get anywhere with it at all you know mr nunes had a comment and then mr oliver i i didn't i i want to go back to the social emotional core respect yeah and i appreciate you saying exactly what you did uh in what i want to say is i think it behooves you it behooves your fellow students classmates and anyone the old adage if you hear something say something you young men and women have your ear to the ground you know your friends and if there's if they have an issue maybe you reach out to them and say johnny susie how you doing what if you don't like the answer go knocking on someone a teacher door or you know the social worker's door mr t will's door miss javier's door just say hey listen johnny susie they've got a problem i've tried talking to him it's not working or i don't know what's going on can somebody talk to them yeah it may be nothing but it may be something and if you you know again the old adage hear something say something and that's what i would if would impress on you yeah i um i actually had a friend over the over the course of the pandemic who's a student here who had gotten to a point where they got to a very low point and i had to do exactly that i had to i was very concerned they had to stay at my house one night and i had to reach out to ieps social workers so and i'm sure that's happening all across the board so i'm we've had a lot of students that have been dealing with this different stuff and and i think that friends and parents and teachers are doing a good job recognizing that there's different stuff going on and trying to support them any way they can you know so but i one thousand percent agree with you okay thank you i'm good man mr oliver thank you madam chair yes thank you for bringing that up you know these are the types of conversations that we should be having and i really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience of course uh with that um with that i you know i don't see why we you know maybe down the line we can't put something in the the agenda just to have an open discussion about the parking fees and dig a little bit more deeper whether it's through the budget subcommittee um or through just the general meeting but i just asked that somewhere down the road that um you know maybe we can bring him back and uh we can share she has some more thoughts um i have a couple of my own thoughts as well i've always um i've actually had conversations i think with mr kylie in the past previous years about the parking fees um so you know i think it's worthwhile you've done you've clearly done your due diligence um i saw i i read your letter uh that you had sent i think it was last month of the month before yep um that was very well written by the way i appreciate it i mean you backed it up with a number of facts so uh no we we appreciate your time and we don't want this to you know to think that we're not listening to you we're not hearing you we take everything under you know we take everything under advisement i appreciate and i'd be glad to go into more depth i obviously don't want to sit here spitting out all these numbers and you know what not but i'd be glad to have a meeting in the future you know whatever it may be to discuss the issue further no i appreciate it so much yeah are there questions comments well we appreciate you uh coming out rushing over here after that uh miscommunication um you know we we just wanted to hear your thoughts about the year and and how things were going so we really appreciate you coming tonight and taking the time to to inform us i appreciate it thank you for having me thank you for mr oliver's suggestion thank you thank you thank you really valuable thank you all right so the next item on our agenda is a superintendent's update just a couple of things i'll mention um a couple of things going on in the schools obviously the elementary schools have been having their like i said last time they're grade five get togethers getting ready to do all of that so that's in process um potter well i asked them do you want me to share anything and they've been having some dance-a-thons and virtual this and bingos and everything ptos are helping raise money the things that people missed out on before one exciting thing is i think we mentioned before that cushman school was awarded a became a feinstein school so they're continuing that work and its focus on kindness and they received two thousand dollar two of them i think one thousand yeah so two two thousand dollar um checks from the fines as they continue their work about being kind it's they're using take care of yourself take care of others and take care of our school and we're we just put up a little banner on the school so if you take a peek at that feinstein school so that's dr dale is very excited about that continued work we're all in the process of planning for the promotion at the middle school as well as graduation at the high school the middle school at this point in time will be doing two graduation um events if you will by cohorts mr jones has prepared a letter which we're going to regroup on tomorrow in light of the governor's updated guidance so we'll be um sending that out shortly but right now the dates for the middle school are looking like june 15th and june 16th and once again mr jones letters are always very very thorough so he'll be sending those out to the parents once we touch base with him tomorrow again as far as the high school goes of course as i said um the graduation will be june 6 and we're still finalizing some details uh going back and forth on you know our original plan is to use the turf field um we're still looking at that to make sure we don't want damage to the turf field but yet um how do we make that work for our kids and our parents and again thinking about the governor's update today we're going to be regrouping and looking at that to some of our planned shift as of tomorrow you may have seen that the students no longer have to wear masks outside so that message was sent out and um kids will get to be do resource recess without their mass we'll be meeting with mr mishu in the morning just to go over some things again and and look at that and always get his advice on what's happening uh we are continuing to work with the police department on the rolling parade which we're planning as well like last time i knew once we did it it was too successful right that was great so we you know we're gonna have to do it again and um i just want to give another shout out to mr galashaw and his tech team um last week i don't know if you knew we we had a kind of a i'd say a major event on a friday and before mcas was comes back on monday etc and things kind of shut down and we knew we needed things on monday mr galesha and his tech team worked diligently throughout the weekend including until 2 a.m on one of the nights so i don't think there'd be another team of folks that would bother i mean one person left a mother's day was sunday left to go have mother's day dinner and then came back and stayed all night so we can't we couldn't thank them enough um for their commitment and the work that they did and i i just feel like i keep mentioning mr galashaw about the tech team i don't know i don't know what's going on but in all seriousness um we're very thankful because mundy would have come and it would have been a little bit of a disaster thank you mr gallashaw yeah anyway that's all i have so our last item on the agenda is a report of the chair and you know i just want to say i know you're saying thank you to mr galashaw but i would like to say thank you to all of the administrative team and staff both in the central office and in the schools um you know it's hard to believe that all of our kids are back in school full-time finally um it has been a crazy year and i know you all have worked so very hard throughout the last summer and this year and i know we all appreciate that and we're all crossing our fingers for a normalish summer so you guys can have some some down time and hopefully some vacation time you've all worked really hard and i think we all appreciate it very much thank you i don't have anything else to add to my colleagues mr nunes and then mr oliver yeah thank you madam chair i mean to just follow up on your comment too i mean we in all services can't forget uh rick ferreira and his maintenance staff and the individual building custodian staffs i mean walk around see all the plexiglass and everything else that's going on behind the scenes in these buildings type of deal is is them i mean working you know through weekends and what it would be a holiday day off for for everybody type of deal that you're working to get those things in place and the custodians cleaning everything at night and after events and things of that nature so uh my you know our thanks to them too uh the question that i have through you to the superintendent and one of the things i was thinking about uh and it came to light because of what's going what they were talking about in cranston rhode island and they were talking in cranston about at cranston east cranston west high school is opening the vaccines up to the high school students you know at that time anybody that was 16 so you know for argumentative say juniors and seniors type of deal to get give them a chance to be vaccinated well now they've moved it down to you know 12 year olds which brings you into sixth grade and i'm just wondering if that's something that we've looked at you know in in getting as many of our students vaccinated as possible yes the seniors are leaving but then they'll be in good shape when they go to college next year and then at this point in time you would have everybody from sixth grade to juniors as they move up one year you know make the schools that much safer next year and everybody that much safer and staff and such so i'm just throwing it out there i know it probably is going to be some work that's got to be done on it but it's just something that kind of came to mind yep yeah and and we did um i did throw that out to mr mishu and um he mentioned that you know we'd take a a partner whether south coast or he mentioned a couple of other things that would then um provide us with the uh vaccines but we're going to continue that conversation um mr kiley did send me forward me an email from westport today so i did post it on our facebook page it was a link they had about a thousand vaccines available at the nx on main road for the 20th and um they provided a link that people it's for 12 and up so we put that on our facebook page they shared it with us and other school districts if folks wanted to um fill out the survey they would schedule that time i think it's twelve to six i believe so at least that's one step forward that's that's all i was looking at and the last thing i have is a little bit of a light and i just want to thank the members of the junior class for my wife and i getting our second flocking so we appreciate it should have paid the insurance i didn't the first time mr oliver i've been flocked once hopefully not twice mr oliver thank you dr jenkins um yeah just to piggyback off of what mr noon said um i know that the uh the clinic at circus city is now accepting walk-ins they're accepting watkins now and i know that the schedule for south coast health at vanity fair that's also accepting walk-ins in certain days so um there's definitely availability in the area all of the cvs's are offering vaccines now too in town okay and appointments are generally available whenever you want yeah they definitely seem to be opening up my question though was i'm not sure if it's this time of the year but dr geffrey could we have a list of all of our resignations and retirements um i don't know if it's typically in the springtime or if it's back over the summer but whenever you get a chance if you could provide probably get that for the next meeting and we just got another one last week so it might change a little bit but pretty much i think pretty much do we have uh a few more individuals looking to retire uh early after this year uh it might be okay i don't know if that i think maybe some were pushed a little bit we're on the cusp but yeah okay i'm done but we'll get that for you yeah madam chair i got one more quick thing i apologize thought of it now when you talk about mr kylie the usually the mo the year-end budget opening is that coming next meeting yeah i think that'll be the next one yep okay yep all right uh miss wait and i was just gonna add as we were talking about the uh vaccinations is that you know they do need to have even if you have a you know 12 13 year old you need to have an id so school id works so if you're a parent that's you know planning that you know appointment just make sure you have a school id or if you don't have a passport or something like that other comments questions um before we move on miss ganther do you receive any emails for public comments i have not no okay so our next meeting is scheduled for june 7th at 6 30 here just so we're all clear in case anyone doesn't know that um and having said that i will entertain a motion to adjourn into executive session for updates on negotiations with union personnel not to readjourn into open session so moved second so i have a motion by miss wheat a second by miss mr noon sorry a long day is there any discussion on the motion i'm hearing them roll call please miss gunther shannon jenkins yes mary waite yes kathleen amaral yeah john nunes yep chris oliver yes thank you everyone have a good evening [Music]

[Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] i call to order this special meeting of bullhead city elementary school board monday may 17th 2021 5 pm roll call corey burgess here let's go jeannie and then to charlotte charlene and then amanda judy borland present charlene diaz present amanda amen present we're only missing brandy this evening uh item 1.3 adoption of the agenda can we get a motion i move that we adopt the agenda as presented second that jeannie gordon all in favor aye that was charlene diaz i'm sorry okay all in favor aye corey burgess aye genie borland aye charlene diaz hi amanda amen so moved dr stewart mr president members of the board um as you're aware there have been some ongoing issues and conversations regarding the colorado river area health employees benefit trust that we generally refer to just as the trust when we're talking about it here in the district as i said there are some issues i've given you some background information but the trust has never quite functioned the way that its declaration has said it's always been very much just an advisory committee and has been very valuable to both districts as such because they've done all the background work before any decisions were made they don't have any other purpose there's never been a trust fund there's never been any co-mingling of money from the two districts unlike what was originally intended so it's been a very very much an advisory group as i say there have been some issues and i think perhaps it's time for us to at least discuss and consider withdrawing from the trust so that we can just move forward the reason i asked for this special meeting if any of you've been following what has been going on as dr stewart has explained to us the documents that she sent out so we have that information there has been a lot of accusations a lot of false statements and rumors that have gone around and i just felt the easiest way to just resolve this situation is let's start over so i was asking what would it take for us to to just remove from this trust maybe establish a new advisory committee and move forward and dr stewart reached out to the attorney in rela and found out that yes we can remove from the trust this would dissolve the trust because there would no longer be two cooperating school districts and at that point we can move forward now my biggest concern is what would happen to the health care of our staff the good news is we've already approved it so they are already contracts are in nothing is going to be lost we've already made the motion there there was a concern with the others the vision the dental we've already received notification from those two that we're good everything will continue on the only thing we're waiting on is the disability and life but we presume the same thing is going to happen but we can cross that bridge in my opinion when we get there and just continue moving forward so are there any other questions about what we are discussing this evening no okay at this time i would like to move that we withdraw from the make sure i get this correct uh where is the name the c-r-a-h-e-b-t health benefit trust at this time and give our 60 days notice to dissolve i'll second that motion all in favor aye corey burgess hi genie borland hi charlene diaz i'm amanda i'm so moved we have made that decision um at this time i would like our board to appoint someone to go to the meeting tonight and address crushed and let them know of our decision and what we are doing so they can make a decision based on what has just transpired i'd like to nominate corey purchase to do that like to second that okay do we have any other nominations i will accept so with that all in favor aye corey burgess hi genie borland hi charlene diaz hi amanda amen so moved uh that is our only item for the meeting tonight so at this point mr president i'm sorry to interrupt um uh would you please give me direction about uh do you want me to draft the letter relative to uh our withdrawal yes i would so if you would please draft that letter and get that out to the powers that need uh so with that anything else then i would make a motion that we adjourn our meeting can i get a second i second all in favor aye corey burgess hi genie borland hi charlene diaz hi amanda ayman so moved we are adjourned [Music] you
