okay uh i do i do we'd like to speak about a transportation issue um an executive session yes okay we'll have uh we'll have a discussion executive session on transportation issue next we have the delegate assembly okay i'm gonna make this one short the delegate assembly met on may 15 and was called to order by uh president uh mr michael mcclure he provided his report to the assembly county meetings when virtual can help members stay connected courses were provided to help members obtain acquired training throughout the year he thanked everyone for their continued support throughout his term as president mr larry feinstein provided his report to the assembly and updated us on some of the legislation that is coming down the pike such as s 2 26 91 which allows districts to maintain a four percent budget surplus s 3488 which is voluntary incentive based uh regionalization matters he also announced the new the new officers for the next term which includes uh irene lafar as president bruce young four county activities to mesh [Music] he did announce that the njsba uh njsba's workshop this year again will be virtual and will run from october 26th through the 28th the first order of our agenda was to uh vote on our our slate of candidates which were approved we also we had two we had two resolutions that we voted on which uh passed so the one was on the njsba believes that students have the right to be educated in an environment free of discrimination intimidation that brought mutual respect and acceptance among the students regardless of age gender race ethnicity religious belief physical ability gender identity or expression um i lost my place gender identity or expression affliction or sexual orientation and perceived difference students should be expected to treat each other with respect and should not be subjected to or subject other students to demeaning remarks whether discriminatory and or intimidating statements interactions so that was our first one that we passed our second one was on the recommendation by the njsba special education committee and the new the new uh wording for that is as follows okay let me get this the njsba believes that trained non-lawyer parent advocates provide a valuable service to parents and students mandatory training of non-lawyer parent advocates is essential to protect the interest of parents students and districts training for parent advocates should result in an understanding of the appropriate role of a parent advocate as well as the requirement of federal and state special education laws and regulations iep development and conflict resolution training shall be ongoing the state should provide funding for such training so those were the two uh items that had passed the delegate assembly and will be placed in uh our new jsba handbook does anybody have any questions okay all right uh last uh we have uh facilities uh miss beltran okay um so we met on may 11th it was me uh mr daley mr casper and mr smith um the administration president was mr robert tosi um mr uh janine cuccillavid michael usey eric uh thomasvidge and al um marcio we met from 4 to 5 30 pm the first thing we discussed was the new parking lot at the administrative building this parking lot is needed for the welcome center so that we can have it be handicap accessible so that the parents coming to register their children or have a meeting with anyone in the registration office they don't need to park in the back and find their way through the building the second thing we talked about was the handicapped spots um around the district that we came to realization that we don't uh we're not in compliance with the handicap spots we're going to be painting them in the existing parking lots as well as going to the city to see if we can get some front spots designated as handicapped only the third thing we talked about was a tree cleanup at school number 16 the only trees that will be removed are from the arborist report um they we had a quote come in um and we're going to look into the potential value of any wood that comes down um number four we talked about is the hvac at school number 17.

seniors pj cass and sarah compute were named the ciac scholar athletes for cheshire high school both students received this award based on their athletic performances while maintaining high academic achievements finally the high school held a third a third college signing day this past month recognizing nine seniors who signed letters of intent to play their chosen sport in college next up the peer health education class held a high school leadership conference at chs yesterday about 60 60 students from the junior and sophomore classes were invited to attend the day included activities a scavenger hunt various speakers and a panel some of you may have seen our very own dr solon participating in the jump roping activity so that was very fun the speakers included chs graduates steve bowman and paige remillard chs graduate sebastian little could not attend the event in person so he sent in videos to be shown to the students where he spoke about qualities relating to leadership finally the peer health class would like to thank all of the teachers who helped make the event possible specifically mrs wellspeak mrs flood and of course mr lee um in addition the next gen science standards testing for all juniors is the week of may 24th to 28th um the student senate is sponsoring a virtual talent show on may 26th so that should be fun on friday evening from 7 00 to 10 pm chs drama is hosting their screening of little woman and after freddie the production will be available for viewing by the public and also look for the unified theater production of 2021 with a theme of gratitude which is in the filming process right now and there is a viewing party set for june 2nd um the production will then be live streamed and lastly students are anticipating the upcoming proms junior and senior problems will be june 3rd and 4th respectfully at the aria and that's all we have great thank you lucy and josh uh any questions from the board seeing this aren't i thank you both for being here this evening i can let you go and so you can enjoy this restaurant oh i'm sorry tim i didn't see it oh by the way for board members i know the chats are a little different in zoom but there's a chat button on the bottom of your screen feel free to raise your hand there and if you don't get my attention just chime in on the call i'm sorry tim you you wanted to ask a question i think catherine was first oh thanks tim i just wanted to clarify so the when the uh little women is available for public viewing is that going to be on the cheshire website i mean it's obviously a youtube thing right so the link's going to be on our website or yeah where's he gonna be jeff be honest with you we're josh i'm not entirely certain could ask mike i know that there's a history with uh our shows that the licensing agreement prohibits us from broadcasting so i'm not sure that like i can't guarantee that it'll be on our youtube page um and so it may be a linked uh one-time view but uh i will look into that right now yeah i just right okay it'd be great to be able to see it so thank you thanks josh and lucy i have no other questions then yeah thank you sorry thanks tony uh lucy you had mentioned there were we had the third signing day it was nine students i'm just curious like do you happen to know how many students signed college scholarships were they full rides partial rides just curious i think it's normally 20 to 30 you told me before jeff in a given year is that i mean the pandemic i'm just curious if that affected this in any way this year i'm not entirely sure um how many students in total i know there's three signings um and i would say like there's i'm just totally estimating right now but nine is probably average to have at a college signing um i wouldn't say i would say no more than ten and the scholarships vary from student to student okay and yeah i think lucy's last point about scholarships varying i don't think people realize you know for example i know division one tennis the team full team ncaa allots 4.5 scholarships too and there's more than you know there's probably 15 people on the team so you know you can sign a commitment um to play some place typically it's not a full athletic scholarship yeah to dr solon's point just because um a senior has signed a letter of intent to a school to play for athletics that um doesn't necessarily mean they're going for a scholarship okay great any other questions from the board as soon as there are none lucy and josh thank you again enjoy the rest of your evening and look forward to seeing you again thank you up next uh audience public q a i should have uh said to be in the meeting so uh unfortunately we could not meet in person tonight we did resume in person meetings a couple weeks ago unfortunately uh mike our av lead cannot help us this evening so we're left to fend for ourselves here on zoom but that being said we are taking uh questions and comments from people watching the public via cps kova 19 at cheshire.k12c that being said uh jeff do we have any inquiries yet yes we had um two different emails one was a or two different topics i should say one was from a parent uh emily i apologize if i'm mispronouncing this but i believe it's dennis uh she was very appreciative of the work being done in the school system this year and the amount of in-person instruction we've been able to provide and um finally asked if they if we believe that the kovid 19 vaccine will be mandatory for students next year which i thought was a great question and i i did reply to her already but you know publicly share that i don't believe that will be the case and i want to clarify the state determines what vaccines are necessary for entrance in public schools the covid19 vaccine has never been brought up is one that would be required and i believe it takes legislation to do that unless it's through executive order and i don't foresee either of those things happening by next fall so um i don't believe that the cobit 19 vaccine will be required the other uh item was probably about 20 form letters that came in today all stating the same thing about uh the desire to have high school graduation in person i know dr gad had sent an email in april telling people that that's our desire obviously and that you know with the change in state guidance we'll review that well the state changed guidance yesterday and you know today was the first day we had the opportunity to know if like formally be certain of what the guidance would be we reviewed that with maura esposito and we will be holding a single graduation ceremony that will look a lot like previous ceremonies and there'll be more on that in my superintendent's report amen great thank you jeff uh moving on uh we moved to the consent calendar in our board of packets we have approval of a grant resolution uh jeffrey vincent want to walk us through that before we call for a motion um is that yuvin or do you want marlene it's yeah marlene was going to report on the grant activity is that is there a resolution that goes with that there is a consent calendar i'll make them i'll make a motion for it if you want yeah then we can i don't know if we want to do discussion at that point but it's it's linked in the agenda basically it says that um we authorize is the board the superintendent to apply for and accept any and all grants that may be determined appropriate by the administration it's encouraging me uh and our team to look for revenue sources associated with whatever work that we're doing and move them for the board for uh for it says for approval but i do have the authority to apply for these grants and you know it's just encouraging the superintendent of schools to seek additional revenue sources that align with our needs and we're we're frequently doing that marlene sent me one probably 10 minutes before this meeting yeah and for the board i just wanted to oh this is no nobody here is no longer you on the board since we're you know well into year two of some of our tenure and beyond so i know last year this came for the first time for for newer folks and some questions around how the grants are actually applied for an authority so this is the same policy it really hasn't changed but that being said tim if you want to make a motion we can have further discussion if needed uh motion that the cheshire board of a k board of education approves the consent calendar as presented is our second catherine seconds adam's distant third any discussion seeing as there is none the motion is that the cheshire bar education approves the consent calendar as presented all those in favor please raise your hands it is unanimous thank you team moving on uh we are going to reports of standing committee starting with curriculum our faith could not be here this evening so anne will be filling in that report thank you man great so this is a report of a curriculum committee meeting on monday may 10th i would help and unfortunately i could not make that meaning so i apologize no that's okay um so we had um several informational items that we spoke about we talked about a textbook recommendation change for the personal finance course this course has a textbook that is paid for by tungsten community college and so leslie pair of the chs business department uh presented an update to the textbook request for the advanced personal finance course and the text covers the same essential material that tunxis community college does and they're using this textbook for the course and they continue to pay for the text for cheshire students enrolled in the course for informational items we've got an update on district-wide field trips there have been several requests for trips to places like camp sloper and uh the emphasis of many of these trips is to help foster team building and bring students together in a way that has been difficult this year so safety precautions and planning have been at the forefront for each of these trips and this really was brought to the curriculum subcommittee so that um just the the board is aware that uh some of these field trips have resumed this year we had an update from dr mary gab the chs principal she shared with us an update on the sketch the high school schedule for 20 21 22.

um is that's what you're gonna get into a little more in depth in the remainder or can you give us a thirty thousand foot of how that decrease is happening yes so um the the the significant increase from um this year to year 22 23 is that this year we're um reflecting all the one-time money um that we're spending or receiving and also spending um in relation to that and so this year you may recall that last week when i presented we received um about 14 million dollars in uh one time um that is reflected in this this this chart right here um and so um that's why in the out years you'll see a dramatic increase because we have reflected the one-time money that we know that's coming to the districts that is solidified um and so that's why you know you see a huge difference okay that is reflected here okay thank you okay so can you see the full charge here yes okay perfect okay so this chart here um reflects the unrestricted side of the general fund um as you can see here um for the current year we started the year um with approximately 12.4 million dollars in beginning balance uh we're projecting to receive 107 million dollars in revenue with the total expenditures of approximately 83.8 million dollars a transfer from the unrestricted to this restricted general fund of approximately 22.1 million dollars which projects to end the year um with a ending fund balance of 13.7 million dollars that ending fund balance carry over to next year uh beginning fund balance um and for next year we're projecting to receive approximately 109.8 million dollars in revenue um on this chart right here in this column um i do want to point um your uh the line item that says or the road that says other adjustment um this reflects the dollars um that we're projecting to receive an s or two money um you see an adjustment here because um because these are the expenditures in the unrestricted general fund will have to transfer into the restricted general fund because when the cobit money comes in it comes after strict dollars and the revenue will be reported in the restricted general fund but at the time of the preparation of the second interim and the third interim we still have not yet identified expenditures to transfer from unrestricted to restricted to be able to utilize the um so with that we're projecting next year a total expenditures of 81 million dollars with a transfer from the unrestricted general fund to the restricted general fund of approximately 23.5 um and ending the year um whether about 18.9 million dollars in any fund balance um that ending that would carry over to next year um and to start up the beginning balance and so for for next year the district is projecting to receive approximately 100 points in revenue um the district is rejecting to have a total expenditures of approximately 91 million um and a transfer from unrestricted side to the restricted side of approximately 24.2 um on this column i do point your attention to this negative 14.7 million dollars so um this is the the the amount um that the district is projecting to spend down its reserve amount um as i um mentioned before the districts was able to stay afloat in the current year and next year because all of all the one-time funds one all once that one-time funds goes away you know we're we're projecting to spend uh 14 7 million dollars in reserve that we've been built um from this year and next year and to the next and to the third year and with that spend down the reserve the districts will be left with a little over 4.1 million dollars in in reserve um please note that um you know the reserve requirement uh for the districts um is three percent of the total fudge um and three percent is usually around four million dollars so um when you're looking at where we're starting this year and we're what we're projecting to end um in the third year out um you know with the one-time money that we have right now it's keeping us afloat for two years but in the third year out uh once when that one-time money goes away meeting the reserve requirement in the third year out based on the current um projection again so i'm i'm not sure if you want to take questions i'm assuming it's a question [Music] so okay 22 2223 um surplus deficit that 14 almost 15 million um can you speak to uh that the relationship if it exists between that amount and the number that we're that we're considering as we talk about um closing and repurposing of schools is there a relationship between that number and those actions that need to be taken um theoretically through that through that process that we've been doing in the past couple months yes uh absolutely um all the action that the board um again it's considering for future consider or because for future consideration will have an impact on the negative 18.7 so um let's say the board has taken action to um reduce cost in terms of um you know whether it's consolidated school or whatnot and it generates say two million dollars this year um that two million dollars would be an ongoing saving for the ongoing year so if you multiply that over a three year period that would be six million dollars that six million dollars would be goes to reduce um the budget um death um that we're seeing for 14.7 million dollars so um you know the action uh will and and and have an impact on um you know closing the structural deficit so the sooner um we take those actions um to generate those savings um you know the the the it it prevents or it avoids it just from making a massive cut in one year if it slowly increments and takes action to slowly um close out that budget uh structural deficit okay thank you um if i can um i was afraid this might happen because i know that we all have all kinds of questions and how it relates to you know different things um so i'm hoping if you are all okay with having a presentation of course of course i think we you know we'll be stopping at every page or um with those questions that relate to the overall picture for some of us and then some that relate to specific numbers so we can write down our questions and keep them you know handy so after mr covera presents then maybe he talks back to answer some of those questions okay well you said if we're all okay with it i would prefer to do it as we go but as you're facilitating the meeting i i'll respect that um i just okay if you can write them down so you don't forget i'm sure you won't and i'm sure you have them written down all right thank you yeah thank you uh board president i'm actually um this this concludes uh the presentation on the third interim sport i'm happy to take any questions so can i can i finish up now on the one that i just had then go ahead okay thank you so i i i mean mine is just the final comment cover i want to thank you for clarifying that because you know it's important that i i think it's important that the community that our public that our taxpayers know that when we are having these discussions about consolidation and closure that almost 15 million dollars is what we're trying to address and you know we all don't want to have to make these difficult decisions but they're in black and white and it probably should be read i guess if this is a budget that you know is traditional format or whatever that's that significant number that that is and uh jesse pham i'm not sure who did it first so i i did okay go for it uh trustee chavez okay what ada number was used in your projections mr covera and i did i'm sorry and i didn't knew him because i know we were getting some feedback so that's my fault uh thank you mr cobra if you can um help us answer that yes i can do that give me one second trustee travis what bleeding is it just me or is everybody seen like a blue screen i think uh cover is looking for something to put on there cover okay so that's not me okay it's not just you thanks i'm assuming uh mr covera will be sharing a document is that correct mr clever yes i can share okay okay can you see the um enrollment projection graph here yes these are the enrollment numbers that we're using for um projecting our um our budgets perhaps i should be more specific maybe i should be more specific um so we are being funded with last year's ada numbers so is this the same assumption that we're the projections are on last year's ada numbers or this year's ada numbers the so this year and next year um you know lcff funding has the whole autonomous revision um we're still um using uh the the the demographic study projections in terms of um presenting to the board but on funding purposes uh we're still funded on the 2019 level for this year and next year and that's why i and and thank you for asking that question because um the whole time this provision runs out in year 22 23 and so in year 22 23 we're back to the old rules of how we calculate um lcff which is the greater of the current or prior year so when we're starting to again collect ada for next year um assuming that ada is going to be higher than year 2223 ada um year 2121 2288 is going to be used for the calculation of lcf and so while we have the two-year whole autonomous revision the third year out is where we're going to see the cliff and that's why you see a significant drop in revenue specifically to lcf because going back to your point this year and next year uh we're funded on the 2019 level but in year 22 23 that protections goes away so um you know the the the funding will be based on either year 22 23 88 or year 21 2288 in either case since we're we're declining districts um we're going to have lower ada to be able to generate um lcs funding so in the two years you lost 900 students so the projection is what what will be the number in 2223 could you tell me a rough estimate in year 22 2223 um our enrollment projection is on this graph it's 8105.

there's some cooling issues in the building um this will be done um before the referendum work as it's needed um more rapidly and it is um not as costly as the things that we're going into the referendum uh potential the fifth thing we talked about is potential sites for school expansion um if the possibility for a purchase or a lease to purchase uh were to come available we would consider it as a board and that is all we talked about that evening any questions uh yes miss beltran i have one did you uh did who has the arborist report and can the board get a copy of that as well for the the trees at 16 and the other question i have is about the parking lot um that's sick at the administration building what what's the parking on the side of that building um i was always curious about that and uh do we have to get county approval because that's a county road uh no the we don't need county approval because it's not going to be uh no egress or regress is changing uh it's just like a use of land so there's no county approval needed and the the tree report i'm not sure mr oozie could supply that to you yeah yeah i could do it as early as tomorrow no problem okay the other thing is we have parking on the side of that building like who uses that miss beltran i could respond to that okay um miss best for that doc you can explain that yes yes sir thank you um miss basford previously as i know you're aware we had the preschool program at the school and that was utilized by those staff members uh the head start program was there so that they're no longer there so we'll be utilizing those spaces for a couple of handicapped uh uh parking spaces but in addition we're gonna need this additional smaller parking lot because of the reconfiguration of the building with the new welcome center um so people can park right at the side and walk to the front of the building as opposed to parking in the back which by the way is full and walking around the whole building so we'll be using both vice thank president mr president smith uh ms bashford had i mean mrs belcher had a question for you um so when's the last time we actually looked we received the arbus report it was like two years ago right yes and then the tree company themselves came out and uh did a report on which trees they would think most of the trees are already laying down the ground it's simply just taking them out okay the reason i'm asking is because i mean obviously things can change between two years and to today so i was wondering if it would make more sense to bring arbors back out and do make another report or if the tree company already did a report then that answers the question thank you mr smith i i just want to reiterate quickly those trees that's that's lotus trees at school 16 they're they're worth a lot of money so the arborist would be uh i really want to see the report because um it should be close to nothing to remove that stuff because the tree company is going to make a lot of money on that wood and wood is very expensive now plus make it lotus wood it's even more expensive yeah we'll we'll share the report with everybody there's there's just um a lot of issues with dead trees uh you know fallen trees moldy molded trees i mean we'll we'll definitely investigate everything before any decisions are made well the the reason why i'm curious is because when the last company came in they came in and did a lot of the work without the board being notified it was very controversial and some healthy trees got removed and we didn't know about it and there those trees are kept on that property because they their root system root system absorbs a lot of water so that they're very valuable so i want everybody to be really aware of it that that tree company made a lot of money and we weren't we weren't notified about what was going on so it was very confident we had a lot of people from the community show up at the meeting so i just i'm telling my fellow board members to take heed of this until and to really pay attention thank you uh miss bastard if i may uh just check your email back from sorry i was mistaken almost three years ago back from september 13th 2018 just do a quick harvest search in your email and i accept what i did and i've done the artist report it was sent to us from uh mr uchi or from his office so we think we also get a no but i'm saying it would be also a good idea to say what anyway because this wave is for mr always can have a copy as well yeah why don't we send it out to the full board please uh i don't have a copy of it either oh sorry emma smith any other questions all right we'll move on to the agenda oh i'm sorry um um mr mountain is uh max reuben here yes he is if you could admit oh there he is hello max welcome always good to see you thank you for being here and uh the floor is yours all right good to see you too um so a few updates for tonight uh first i want to mention how um there was recently a website that was created for all of these spring performances that are going to be happening on the upper fields at the high school in between the tennis court and the soccer field and you can visit the chs spring performance series website for information on attending the chs choir concert which is next tuesday the orchestra concert there's two dance showcases and then the spring musical and all of this information was included in an email to parents i do have a question if anyone can answer this is that website also posted on the clifton high school website um if you don't have an answer now you guys can just get back to it later uh but i want to finish what i was going to say with my address so uh next i just wanted to thank everyone who attended the cast film festival there were a lot of a lot of people in attendance there um and it was a really we got a really good crowd reaction for a lot of the films so um thanks for supporting our program also um thanks to anyone who showed up to opus which was the band spring concert which was yesterday and i know that had a pretty good turnout as well unfortunately i wasn't able to go but a lot of my friends were playing and i heard they did a great job so thanks to everyone who attended opus um the next thing i wanted to mention is for any parents or students who don't know there is a confirmed event for the senior class it's the senior sunset and that's taking place monday june 21st uh students will have a chance to watch all the senior videos at the senior sunset if you don't know what the senior videos are there are videos made by my cast class uh we make a bunch of different projects highlighting as certain students um in the senior class and all the students will get to watch it during the senior sunset um there'll be meals provided by pomptonian and students will have to bring chairs blankets or etc and it should be a really good time next there's i wanted to mention prom for anyone who doesn't know that prom is happening this year it's thursday june 17th there should have been a letter that went home to parents and the letter included a permission slip which needs to be filled out in order for students to purchase tickets also in order to purchase a ticket for the prom seniors need to pay their class dues it's only forty dollars in order to purchase a prom ticket it's at the legacy castle and it's gonna last from seven to eleven pm again on june 17th and the ticket cost is 110 and ticket sales are going on next week um so other than that the only other thing i wanted to mention is for those of you who don't know i've mentioned it a few meetings ago but i wanted to mention it again for anyone who doesn't know the clifton student union has made us a few websites that are really helpful for students it's on the clifton high school website if you go under the students tab in the additional resources column there's the chs mental health and communications for students that website contains various videos and contact information in order to help students reach out in case they need any help with anything mental health related or anything academic related they can take advantage of those videos or contact info on the chs mental health and communication website i plan on updating the site in the near future with more content since more content is being made regarding mental health uh and also the digital resources and test prep website um this website's also on the clifton high school website there's videos on how to pick up hard copy books and ebooks from the chs media center over 45 hard copy test books over 45 hard copy test prep books and 45 test prep ebooks are available there's also a link to clifton public clifton public library resources six different test prep websites with free resources and eight different educational youtube channels of various different subjects are all included on that website um so yeah that's all the information i had tonight if any of you have an answer on if that chs spring performance series website could be accessed from the high school website if you could give me that more information that would be much appreciated and yeah that's pretty much it i think i only have like one or two more of these speeches to make so um i'm gonna i'm gonna miss this you know it's nice getting to see you guys once a week updating you everything that's going on so um yeah good luck with everything and stay safe max thank you very much again for your very important a formative report if it is not on the website uh now we'll make sure tomorrow that that information is on the website and again we appreciate all that you've done uh as the representative for the students uh this entire year uh you've done a phenomenal job and you should be very proud of your accomplishments thank you so much and um they're actually do in the process of the elections for student council for next year we actually need more people to run so if there's any student watching this make sure to if and if you want to get more involved with school uh you can go to the clifton high school website and under headlines there's a flyer with information on how to run for a student council position um and that's how i got the position i have now is from getting elected by the student body um and about the uh spring performance website it's it was already in an email that was sent out to parents i just wanted to know if it was on the chs website but thanks for checking in on that and um and thanks for listening everyone have a good week thank you max thanks [Music] max okay we'll move along to our public recognition this portion of the meeting is open to the residents and non-residents of clifton for the purpose of addressing any subject matter pertinent to and or directly related to the operation of the clifton public school district residents and resident non-residents are requested if in person to sign the register provided for legally responsible and liable for all of their comments okay uh if i see it correctly i believe uh lori lalama was uh first into the uh to the group so lori you have the floor thank you president smith good evening to all i hope everybody's doing well there's a few things i just want to bring up and i really want us to reflect how far we've come during this year this has been a difficult year on everybody but just listening how we have the referendum passed we have the esser2 funds we have all these great things that are that are occurring here in clifton we have the dual um enrollment at so many universities clifton has such a a brighter future than previous and that's due to the hard work from everybody teachers power professionals all the staff uh the principals the the supervisors the parents the community central office the board of ed i mean just think back a few years and see how much we have changed and how much we have grown so i just want to reflect on that i think that's important sometimes we look at other things that are not as important as what the positive things that are occurring in this district and the other thing i'd like to bring up is right now we're going through the latino institute and there's quite a few people that are taking classes right now and i'm very proud to work with the latino institute and the classes that they're taking is um and this is all in spanish um how to handle stress family stress the immigration laws and their rights the importance of communication in the home and all about the new driver's license laws so we have some of the best speakers in the state conducting this so i'm very proud of the latino institute and through our pride and fast grant and all all together since we started with this four years ago when i did it the first two years and then uh martha o'rourke took over we have received a hundred and ninety thousand dollars from the njea for all of the programs that we have done in clifton so i just want everybody to realize how much that we do that andrea does that the staff members who volunteer the community and i was act i was asked to give a shout out to neil's pizzeria on harding avenue because they supplied the pizza kits for this week for the pride event for schools 12 and 17.

uh this past school year chs moved to a block schedule consisting of 80 minute periods where students meet on alternate days and we've talked about this some already moving forward for the 2021-22 school year chs will continue to use a block schedule on a four day rotation and this schedule will allow for four lunch waves to accommodate a reduced number of students because we've increased the space between students in the cafeteria and the schedule allows for two support periods two 40-minute time slots um within one block as well as allowing for an advisory period and all of this without changing the schedule next we discussed the algebra ii textbook selection we had a report from lisa burnaby uh stephen defalco and john redford they gave a summary of the algebra ii textbook selection process and the recommendation i believe this is a a digital textbook the selection committee identified needs to align to the common core and the newly revised sat meet the needs of 21st century digital learners as well as include formative and summative assessment data resources so the recommendations emphasize the strong rating for the envision algebra 2 textbook through ed reports it was a great presentation actually other strengths of the textbook include promoting self-directed learners providing instant feedback for students and using data to help monitor student progress and drive instruction and then we talked about the cheshire curriculum council the ccc the business executive summary presentation and again ms leslie payer shared an executive summary of the business presentation to the ccc on april 6 of 2021 some key points of emphasis included how business classes support complex thinking and social emotional learning through real world experiences business experiences three courses in the business department will be offered for college credit through tungsten community college as we stated earlier and additional goals for the next five years include researching and other dual enrollment opportunities with another community college exploring opportunities to work with the mastery-based performance assessment student experiences and collaborating with colleagues to update curriculum and appropriate resources for each course i believe we had some nice discussion on how far this business program has come at chs over the years um and i would add that we also we had a brief discussion when we were talking about the high school schedule um i brought up the idea of revisiting um high school start times and i so that i just wanted to put that out there because it's probably coming down the line and we'll talk about it in curriculum committee and and discuss how we can start to educate people on the importance of physical and mental health of our teenagers and what what it means you know start start to investigate what that means for cheshire public schools specifically the high school um so i would ask that maybe a line be added to the minutes on that and then yeah exactly thank you and that wraps up my report so any questions for ann on the qriket report uh tim thanks tony yeah um i'm not sure if this is for anne or for jeff or marlene uh so ann mentioned uh we're gonna stick with the 80 minutes for the block schedule and you've generally gotten a positive reception maybe not everybody but generally you've gotten a positive reception from students with that this year yeah the this year was uh an anomaly in the sense that you really didn't have a choice and so i think there was an adjustment period and as i mentioned i think in our last meeting that i'd be willing to bet things are going to be better in the fall and that it'll be more normal than it has in the past but we've been focusing on the benefits of adjusting the time period no student can just sit there and listen to the lecture for 80 minutes but you can really leverage 80 minutes of instruction differently than you can leverage 50.

and then in here whoops awesome you apologize trusty fam okay well given that you know the the projected and there there is a projected enrollment drop and a serious one at that for for our school year 20 to 23 and e you know even if we were using the greater of the two uh ada numbers which is you know the 2122 uh you know no matter how we slice it there is going to be a a drop in revenue uh you know uh you know in in addition to incorporating you know the um what is it uh incorporating the uh the consolidations of skulls um in your experience the uh hello can you hear me yes okay very good in your feedback in your opinion based on your experience with the cost structure of the district uh where where do you see areas we can economize in or areas where we could increase revenues and i apologize clover i'm gonna because the feedback i have to mute you when we're talking otherwise we get a feedback so i'm gonna have to ask you to unmute when you're asked to speak thank you i'm sorry trusty fam can you um restate your your comments or questions of course of course so i you know based upon your experience given the you know given the ada numbers we're looking at and the as you know and it's resulting drop in revenues uh aside from the consolidations that that have been discussed the do you see are the you know our areas that we can economize or raise additional revenues well i think um i think the board has taken the first steps um in terms of consolidating schools um and i think with you know excess surplus property there's some opportunity to um to enhance some revenues in terms of leasing opportunities um so that's you know something to consider as we move forward um not only with the consolidation but also you know as we're having discussions around additional schools to be consolidated or close okay uh supplemental uh you know i you know uh you know it was an unorthodox revenue source and you know maybe it may not apply to us but uh san ramon unified has uh opened actually subway franchises at its high school and granted it may not apply to us because it is a that's a k-12 district as opposed to us being the k-8 district i mean uh you know uh aside from you know aside from um you know the possible uses of surplus property and you know the the consolidations we've discussed um you know and and dr bauer if you you know feel uh i'd like to hear your ideas also uh uh what a what is then a vending contract help with raising district revenues go ahead dr barr i will be very cautious to start discussing that um at this stage of the game trusty fam and the the reason is because we are a uh free lunch district and so having any kind of vending is not um you know proven at this time and i think that there are a million other suggestions and if you remember in the facilities advisory committee the community listed a number of them all of them very viable and i think that that it will behoove the board to you know to start talking about some of them to prioritize them i think it will be a very fruitful conversation in a future meeting uh to be able to do that okay thank you very much thank you trusty fam uh go ahead and uh turn it over to our trustee with hanan i see his hand up yes thank you uh so i'm gonna actually piggyback on the past two comments um the the one that trustee fam just mentioned mr chang so in addition to increasing revenues i just would like um if you could confirm it would also be helpful i think we've heard in previous meetings to decrease expenditures to the extent possible that is that correct or still correct i believe yes that is correct and we're still looking at all those i mean those options that you just mentioned um and and many other options that we haven't um you know discussed at the board level but um at some point um you know we'll bring a comprehensive options consider yeah and i appreciate dr bauer's um comment right now just that it it merits a more full and robust conversation from uh the board at a future time but um i did want to i guess ask or or put back on the radar you know several months ago we had discussed the possibility of um an energy program specifically solar that um we could look at in in order to reduce our uh expenditures and and so i'm assuming based on your prior confirmation about reducing expenditures that that program would still be maybe even more so now than it was previously when it was brought up a viable thing to look into so i look forward to um pursuing that to try to reduce our expenditure significantly and chip away at that the second thing that i think that i went back on in the form of a question to trustee chavez's previous question was so i know that we're using the um demographic study as kind of our you know our guide to to try to predict enrollment and base the budget off of that uh and that's the best it seems to me that that's the best data that we have we paid for that and that was based on some you know a lot of work went into developing that but is there a um uh what's what i'm looking for is there any adjustment that has been made in your budget with regards to the the impact of this cova year and the loss of students and i know because maybe it's kind of like an anomaly it might be super difficult to try to overlay that number over the what we have in a demographic study but is there any consideration to this particular year and the loss of students versus what we saw in the demographic study is that any consideration at all just the is that a question for me or for dr bauer um either either or both whatever whoever can answer it if if there's an answer um i can take the first try doc bar if you want me um uh yeah i think this year is the big unknown um you know i think trying to do a demographic study uh during a pandemic um is very challenging um so we can go only go with the data and the report that's been presented we won't know for sure until um you know we start the school and we start counting warm bodies in the seats itself once we have that actual data then we can start making some um additional adjustment in terms of in terms of trends that's happened in the past another consideration is also to do another demographic study just to get some really updated numbers because you know prior to this one it's been about five years since we've reconducted one so um and again going back to my comment about doing a a study during a demographic i'm not sure um you know how reliable that's going to be they're only basing their report on what data they have their hands on so but i think it's very telling when the school new school year starts and we have a good count of the warm bodies that are in our seats and then we'll be able to make some adjustment there afterwards i think that's wise to consider maybe doing another one when it's the world has returned to maybe a little bit more normal but even if we look at the trend prior to the um to this year it still seems to be trending in that same direction dr bauer to answer that as well or no i'm just nodding because i'm agreeing it's a it's the big unknown i think that for us august just a big unknown um obviously the the data that um the demogra the demographers collected um was taken was collected under extraordinary circumstances right because they conducted the study in the fall of 2020 in the middle of the pandemic so that's one thing to consider and i totally agree with kovera about potentially conducting a second one or another one pretty soon so that we can calibrate you know some of these trends and this this is not only affecting alum rock as you know it affects county wide everybody in this area and i think it will behoove us as the board considers difficult decisions right to have a little bit of a a cleaner data if you will thank you trustee chavez we're looking at the trends before um i remember that the district was going by 200 um students lost and instead what was the reflection was 400 students lost so the way we're going to reflect is that number going to reflect more 400 or 200.

you so [Music] perfect man hi ron how are you okay we're back uh from closed session uh it's uh 6 31 so we'll call this uh second portion of the meeting to order at uh 6 32 and uh with that we will move on to item two is reports from granite hills aaron you're up this will be the last time we see you huh we're gonna miss you good evening board members superintendent nelson and attendees it is absolutely crazy to know that this is the last time i will be saying that but when i think about it everything about this past year has been crazy but it's also been amazing we started the school year in a complete completely virtual setting and while our teachers and staff were well prepared for this it was still something we had never experienced before the first semester of distance learning was filled with virtual activities to stay engaged with our student body we found new ways to interact with people like having a virtual stay at homecoming and hosting club rush over zoom while both these events and all of our others were successful it still felt odd of course everyone on and off campus tried to make it as normal as possible but we all know it was different even though even through these different times though all of granite continued to work hard and help each other wherever they could it truly showed how united our school is as we returned to school in the second semester this unitedness continued to shine through for the first time ever we navigated through introducing freshmen to the campus in spring having friday night lights in april and so much more our sense of community stayed strong and everyone managed to find a place and routine whether that be at school or virtually our return to school also gave us the return of many sports teams our teams performed well this year with both our cross country teams placing second in dsl our football team finishing two and two both are tennis teams placing first in dsl both our soccer teams winning dsl titles our softball and baseball teams working towards playoffs our track and field team winning their first league title in 10 years and our basketball team fighting for third place in league as the year is almost over we have been looking towards and preparing for the future in every regard we've held various events to introduce our new freshmen to the school and we will have a formal dinner tomorrow and a graduation for our seniors on the 26th not only will we be celebrating this year seniors but we will also be celebrating our 2020 graduates on the 24th we are so excited to celebrate our students and greatly appreciate the work done by superintendent nelson and the board to make this possible these end of the year ceremonies also mean that it's almost time for me to introduce you to granite's new governing council president before i do that though i wanted to say thank you delivering these speeches for the last two years has been the highlight of my high school career and i could not have asked for a better experience i formed meaningful relationships with everyone here including apple's president went to a buddha meetings and overall learn more about our district than i ever thought possible thank you all for the opportunities you've given me and always taking the time to listen to me talk about granted with that being said i cannot think of a more worthy person to take over as gc president she is someone who is astoundingly dedicated to granite hills and promoting school spirit i know that she will do an excellent job representing granite and i could not be more excited to see how she does her name is ella houseman and i'd love for her to come introduce herself good evening board members superintendent nelson and attendees my name is ella houseman and i will be the 2021-2022 president i'm really looking forward to attending board meetings next year and giving you guys reports on granny hills high school thank you [Applause] with that thank you all again for your time tonight and for the last two years as my last words to you always remember maroon and gray lead the way thank you aaron before he leaves aaron [Applause] before you go what's your uh what's your plans would you where are you going oh yeah you got it covered for me okay i wasn't gonna let her off that easy yeah and mr perfect can you turn me on the camera yeah yes every board meeting erin has been here with a smile on her face whether it was virtual or in person and she is the first governing board council of president that has served for two years i think in the history of apple valley unified school district we were so proud to have a junior and then as a senior because we knew there was going to be consistency aaron has quite the history and both both of our presidents do she is part of the national honor society the president of mock trial and aaron is an active member of the principal student cabinet she's a recipient of the principal's student of the so i just want to make this short and say thank you for everybody's hard work and i hope everybody has a good evening thank you miss lalama uh next we have uh adrian austin uh you have the floor thank you very much adrian austin uh clifton school eight um and i have two children there just had a few questions one was around the federal stimulus funding i know there's a parent engagement requirement around uh how districts are going to use the federal stimulus that recently came through and so i was i'm curious that information is going to be posted on the website and whether what the plans are for parent engagement around the use of the additional federal stimulus dollars that are going to the district and more information about the amount um and then i have a second question just about next school year i know the new jersey governor announced that there will be no remote option in new jersey and so i'm curious about the numbers and whether or not you know what the district is thinking regarding the three feet of social distance at least it's currently required and whether uh all of the schools will be able to accommodate 100 of the students back with three feet of social distance uh and then i had other questions just around closing i don't know what the current closure school closure policy is for um you know copied positive tests but i would be curious about what the district is thinking about the testing policy for next year what the closure policy will be around positive uh coveted tests and then in the event that there is a i guess classroom closure if there is some sort of you know outbreak in a school would that mean that it would be a return to remote for those students so just like more and and i know this is like really early for next school year but at least i'm starting to think about that uh because my child is fully remote so i want to have an understanding of what it's going to look like so i can make some decisions for what i'm doing with my child next school year so more information is as soon as possible would be great but would love to to hear how the district is thinking about next school year and then also federal stimulus dollars and how that's going to be used to address academic learning loss and other issues okay thank you miss austin next we have uh ramon carreras ramon carreras you're next up ramon ramon carreras okay last call mr ramon carreras all right we'll move on to the next uh next up would be uh mr mark brunsiak mr bruciak you have the floor good evening everybody can you hear me yes we can yes thank you a president uh smith vice president abu drabo and the rest of the board uh every every time i come on here you know i don't know how many more times i can say how out of touch this board is took me weeks just to get the just to get the subcommittee to talk about giving parents an option to go into in-person schooling on wednesday once again the board kicks the can down the road and they got the nerve to say in september we'll definitely have it open how does anybody even trust the board of ed that that is actually going to happen all that i hear is perpetrating fear talk about parking spots talking about trees when the students don't even have an option to go into the classroom the parents don't even have an option to send their students into their classroom five days a week not only that but now students age 12 12 and above are eligible for for a vaccination against against for the covet vaccine and yet as far as i'm aware of and somebody please correct me if i'm right that the high school those students who have the parents who have chosen to have their students go to in-person learning in the high school still do not have an option to go three days a week four days a week it's the same thing two days a week and i've asked this board how many times does it even matter anymore i hope nobody ever forgets the response to the pandemic that this sport is done and how many children lives they have destroyed thank you for allowing me to speak thank you and god bless america have a good night everybody thank you mr brunciack next we have uh kayson little cason little case and little if you could hear me you have the floor hi can you hear me yes we can good evening um k-son little here i'm calling on our on behalf of our statewide um blm chapter uh black lives matter i just wanted to just publicly share my deepest gratitude and appreciation to commissioner ferrazawa for all of his hard work and his love and commitment to bring in justice not only to his district not only to his community that he loves and endures it serves um you know with humbleness and with love and with care and with passion of compassion but i wanted to let the record reflect that um that is what we need in our communities we need more of people who will fight for what's right more people who will who is not afraid to say to power's face right that something is wrong let's protect our students right whether they look like us or not so i wanted to be brief tonight and i wanted to share um that from the heart i also as a proud cousin of the late great malcolm x myself um we believe in justice and we need to protect our community the best as we can so i wanted to share that as best so thank you and have a great evening thank you mr little uh mr mountain anyone else nope that's it see sorry mister you're not emotionally closed outside motion by uh vice president ava drama second by mr casper okay we will move along our agenda uh unfinished business i see no unfinished business we'll move on to uh education administration uh we have mr smith excuse me i apologize yes i'm not sure if it's the proper time to discuss a change in board meeting dates under unfinished business or a new business i will probably do that under new i think okay thank you all right under education administration uh we have uh ea one revision to the 2021 school calendar ea2 revision to the 2223 school calendar ea 3 the attendance report ea 4 proposed modification to school crossings and ea 5 approval of field trips so moved so boom by mr casper second by mr awad discussion yes mr awad vice president let me excuse me vice president aberdrabbo sorry same bearded man um mr smith threw you to the superintendent so i noticed here uh virtual school day for all staff and students through the primary on june 8th is that swapping out with uh the ninth making ninth in person and then just swapping your tuesday does that make it eighth and ninth virtual eighth and ninth mr abdullah what changes switching the swapping schedule for eighth and ninth uh that was not a consideration due to the secondary schedule but it's something that if the board wanted me to look at i can look at so through you mr uh president smith to and of course i mean i don't have to go through a vote or just a request if we can please take a look at that i would appreciate that all right superintendent we'll take a look at that uh uh could i have a follow-up question on that yes mr daly yeah uh did we not have school closed on on the calendar for that date because we're i traditionally we always close on election day due to security issues yeah mr daley we were going to use a snow give back day for um for that purpose but since uh this year it's the first time we're able to use that virtual day uh we wanted to make that a virtual day so that we could take the days off at the end of the school year every year in the future and our calendars will be closed on on election day so in essence you're swapping uh a putting in a school day on an eighth because you could do it virtually and shorting that school dismissal time at the end of the year yes sir that's correct thank you and and doctor i only asked that because the one thing that you know uh that some board members spoke about was that you know we should have done that instead of school clothes because then we can add that end of the year so and you know we can't change the past but maybe we can change with coming up so if we could just swap the eighth and ninth i think would be great especially um uh it would help the parents who are expecting the four days a week i certainly understand thank you any other questions comments seeing none roll call mister uh yes but that day doesn't the high school have uh ninth grade have quarterlies off the top of my head i'd have to check miss bassford unless miss kusalevich can you check that for me or do you know um even if they were to emote in many of our cases in order to level them we have been administering our either on remote days or on the off day so that they're done remotely so what i think i heard ms kusalevich say because janine your internet is lagging a little bit um that even if there are quarterlys that date and i will check miss bassford it it's not a problem to do them remotely because they're all done that way anyway even for students who are in person okay i'm voting yes miss beltran yes mr daley yes miss danny sorry i had to get the trying to find my mute thing here yes you're good mr casper yes mr abba drabo yes mr smith yes all right next we have uh personnel we have uh p1 resignations p2 leave of absence p3 maternity leave of absence p4 amendment leave of absence p5 amendment of appointments p6 roll call mr awad yes miss basford yes miss beltran yes mr daley i see him singing yes yes did you say miss danny yeah miss danny oh sorry cut out um yes and abstaining on p24 mr catherine yes mr abbott yes with an extension on b21 hey mr smith yes motion carries okay next we have finance and facilities f1 we have approval for transportation services agreement 2021 school year f2 certification of budget line item accounts april 2021 f3 financial reports april 2021 f4 modifications to the 2021 budget april 2021 f5 purchase requisition list f6 approval of the food service management contract renewal with uh pomponian incorporated uh f7 equity and pricing for school lunches f8 approval to award the lowest responsible bid cafeteria kitchen at clifton high school f9 special education settlement agreement f10 use of facilities f11 claims list what's your pleasure so much so moved by vice president abu drabbo second by mr faraz awad discussion see none roll call mr awad yes miss bassford i'm voting yes to everything and i'm abstaining on number nine i was only given a sheet of paper on that i had a lot of questions so i couldn't get them answered to novell so i'm going to abstain on that one yes mr daley yes miss danny oh yes mr casper yes mr abigail sorry yeah my daughter's name mr smith yes all right we move on to uh commissioner comments uh we have uh start back with uh mr awad you're up first mr awad you're muted oh thank you sorry about that my mouse is dancing around uh good evening to uh all clifton students staff and districts our fellow citizens uh here in clifton and around our nation i just want to keep my comments a little short tonight um as we're mourning the losses of uh many uh in my uh parents homeland of palestine as many know that what's going on there is uh basically a human humanitarian issue uh we having many families massively uh murdered by uh uncontrollable uh you know crises going on there i just wish peace for both sides um i would also like to also mention you know a belated happy birthday to uh malcolm x his birth name was malcolm little uh eventually becoming uh uh shabazz i just would like to also you know just touch upon you know what's going on and you know or overseas i do have family over there my family and also my wife's side i also want to pray for them uh for everybody's safety over there what's going on there is honestly very troubling it's very scary many children are being killed parents mothers fathers you know doctors engineers all walks of life it is extremely extremely standing that you know that a nation over there of israel being funded 40 billion dollars of u.s taxpayer money to oppress uh people uh the palestinian people if many don't know they could search online look in youtube and actually look at the news gaza is the most densely populated place in the world with millions of people in such a small uh mile radius uh it is the biggest open-air prison where you have israeli military controlling uh the water the mediterraneans pointing missiles at them building apartheid style walls trapping them controlling every movement no airspace basically keeping them locked up in a prison and giving them such short notice to leave their homes before they got bombed and there's nowhere for them to go they are not allowed to move freely within the land as many would like to look back into history of apartheid states and colonialism i call on our local leaders our state leaders and our national leaders to not be cowards and hide behind the doors because they don't want to make a statement to lose votes or donations these are people's lives we speak of sadly we're also going through a crisis in our country and i'm proud to say it black lives matter our brothers and sisters i will always stand for you brown black all walks of life asian gay straight doesn't matter of gender ethnicity or creed i will also stick up for justice for all because at the end of the day we are humans of this world we should be peace loving and caring hatred will never win colonialism will never win apartheid will disappear as it did in south africa and i just want to close up my statement by saying free palestine and free my people all they want is peace and they want to live with their neighbors in peace but trapping them like trapping them into these certain situations sadly does cause uh escalation and if for anybody these comments bother i apologize that this does bother just something you need to self-reflect we are all humans and i stand for all causes and i for our students and our staff out there before jumping to a conclusion do a little research do a little research about what's going on over there because the money we send over there to press on other people we are also sending our police forces and you can look this up online and educate yourself many police forces within our country actually go overseas to israel to learn and to be taught abusive tactics that is brought back into the urban communities and local communities when george floyd may he rest in peace died because an officer decided to put a knee to his neck and suffocate him that is an israeli tactic and there's many images online of palestinian people being suffocated to death what a knee to the to the neck so when we when we want to basically mirror the image of why what's happening with our police forces here and what's going on over there we need to understand where the source of money comes and that's our taxpayer money when we spend 40 billion dollars to a nation to oppress others and to teach them how for us to oppress our own when we have veterans that are homeless you know mentally unstable or do not can't find a meal when we have children or educational systems being underfunded it's i just find a very very funny national leaders when they say that there's not enough money for vets not enough money for education not enough money for you know a green new deal not enough money for anything but surprisingly when we could cut a check to another nation to do dirty work there's money available and i just want to end off with black lives matter free palestine and peace to the world mr awad could i just ask you to just reiterate that these are your own personal comments not comments made on behalf of the board of education please these are my personal comments have nothing to do with any organization the board of education or anything these are my personal comments and if anybody has a disagreement or would like to comment they're more than welcome to reach out to me we can have this discussion thank you next uh we have uh miss basford mr smith i have to pass i have to um let me come back to you yes please i have to go i'm sorry okay yes sorry um miss uh beltron okay i'll keep it uh short tonight for you guys um i would just like to say to the people who are calling in just because we're not directly talking about things in public doesn't mean that these discussions aren't occurring in our work sessions um in our individual committees we are talking about you know what next year is going to look like what our plans are there's still a lot of fluctuation from the cdc where states aren't agreeing with the cdc and the cdc is agreeing with states and back and forth so it is a huge flux schools businesses everyone is kind of at the mercy of what's going to happen we do hope as president biden said that we will be fully back um in school and fall with five day a week um instruction um governor murphy said there will not be a remote option could that change between now and september of course we've had things changed all along um i just wanted to reiterate to the public that just because we aren't making definite decisions on things doesn't mean that these discussions and these thoughts aren't in fact in our heads um i'd also like to thank everyone for calling in i hope once we're back in uh in-person meetings which may be uh next meeting we will be that they people continue to show up and participate in the process and um that's all i have for tonight i hope everyone has a safe memorial day weekend next weekend um and we've almost made it to the end of the school year and i look forward to attending the prom thank you uh miss passport would you like to go now yes thank you and i apologize i just i had a i couldn't hold it okay so um i have a couple of questions when will we be back in person uh because it's uh these meetings are really getting to a lot of us with the uh the way our computers are working acting up so i just like to know when we're going to be back in person i'd like to thank all the speakers for coming out tonight everybody has a right to their opinion and their voice and it should be heard max reuben thank you thank you thank you for concentrating on mental illness you know that um something that uh is very near and dear to me so i thank you and i look forward to tapping into the website to see what work you've done and i really want to um just stress that um with covid it's it's going to make matters worse and we're really going to have to think about addressing mental illness um sooner in the future than later uh thank you to ms lalama for your update thank you to all the other speakers that called in tonight um and i just want to say that memorial day we honor all the men and women who died while serving the united states of america because of their sacrifices we are able to have our freedoms that every one of us enjoy good night thank you miss basford um mr kenova uh unfortunately couldn't uh be here tonight he's not feeling well so um we send our best wishes to mr konova uh next we have mr daley okay thank you mr president um also be very brief tonight uh thank you uh to all the speakers who addressed the board tonight um as we continuously say in unison we do hear you we don't give a lot of chatter back and forth because um uh when we usually speak we speak on behalf of the board we do have our own individual opinions uh but um uh we all work extremely hard um i think this is the busiest year i've spent more hours involved in various aspects of the board as all my uh my fellow members have so we all are working very very hard that's because uh partly because of mr robertosi he's a tough task master and makes sure things get done and things move forward but that's a good thing um and again uh max another another great briefing uh you're certainly a credit uh not only to the school district but to your family and to yourself and we'll be seeing each other hopefully soon in person during either board meetings or certainly hopefully at graduation um and the last thing i'd like to just speak briefly about is upcoming is memorial day um everybody likes to thank veterans veterans day is in november memorial day is really set aside uh for those who've given their lives on be in battle on behalf of the freedom of our country and way of life over many decades and centuries from the civil war or from the revolutionary war right up to the present so we need to think of the sacrifice that's been made by those folks and i think that gives us a much deeper appreciation of how precious and sometimes fragile that our freedom and democracy is we have to be very careful that that's always on my mind i um two of my favorite movies is saving private ryan because that is one of the best movies that accolade accurately portrays uh what went on during that period of time and the sacrifice and the and what those individuals faced uh at that enduring world war ii um so that that's very important and um we also need to keep that in mind so with that i wish all those families who have a loved one a relative who's given that sacrifice we thank you so so much from the bottom of the heart our hearts as a veteran um i also take that very special too so all the best to all you and let's remember those who've given their lives in that sacrifice and connect that with the precious freedom that will always be fragile we must always keep that in mind as we go forward with that we'll see you at the next meeting thank you mr daley uh miss danny uh yes i'll just keep it brief um to reiterate um mr daley said yes um uh it's great uh the memorial day weekend we always celebrate but you know let's keep in mind the historical context and thank you to all the speakers and that's all i have for this evening thank you mr casper thank you mr president i'd first like to take this opportunity to um congratulate our students of the month i wasn't able to see all your accomplishments at the beginning of the month so i'd like to take the opportunity to thank you for working so hard even though there is a month left uh please continue to work throughout the year and we're almost there it's the final countdown everyone i just counted there are 22 days of school left so keep on going uh push it through i'm excited to see all the good things that are going to be happening within the next 22 days including the prom the moving up ceremonies and graduation i'd like to thank mr healey and i'd like to i wish you all the best in your future endeavors please know you still have a home here with us in clifton i'd also thank to i'd like to thank our teachers who are taking the organ gillingham training i had the pleasure of taking that as well i know you're doing it for the betterment of our student our student learning in your classroom so please know that your hard work is not going unnoticed and i'd like to just mention uh to everyone that uh take an opportunity this uh memorial day to remember all of our fallen and um as we appreciate what they have done by making the ultimate sacrifices for us thank you everyone and we'll see you next meeting thank you mr casper uh vice president abu drabo president smith thank you uh going i'm going to hit a couple of points that some board members already hit because the library a little bit so as miss beltran said um you know and and mr brunsiax mentioned uh in two different capacities where first of all hit misspelltron where uh the governor is saying back in school september um which we are all looking forward to and discussing how to go about that safely now to mr brunshinks comments um you know there is another school district that is bringing back their teachers and their their teachers for the month of june my the first thing out of my hand out of my mouth and i said some people were on this on the zoom and on the board and i said that is absolutely ridiculous make them come in for june when they can do it over the summer and start school fresh in september for students to come in late in the school year to add that extra fifth day a week i think is not the words not ridiculous but it throws a wrinkle into the sheets a little bit to continue the ship the path that we're on and continue fresh in september so and i apologize if you feel this way but i'm gonna say it but if you think that we wasted lives or whatever words you used exactly i i um respectfully disagree um mr max rubin you you know students come and go every year and we are always say we impressed we are taken back there's a credit from this education system in this district and also from your um family upbringing and you are definitely that representation max you are very well spoken carry yourself well hand yourself well great representative not only representing your family and your student body but definitely representing yourself as well uh and i applaud you and whatever you do [Music] hopefully we get to meet the new person that you get to have in uh introduction to from this person to this board so we can get start working closely with this representation well not us but the administration can mr hill you're a passionate man um i was fortunate enough to go to your appointment um over at pb and i did so for one reason we are not great friends we don't hang out at school outside of school districts but seeing you at football games the way you are passionate i don't see your day-to-day operations art woodrow um but see the passion that you have the students that stop and say mr healy how are you and you do and you reciprocate the same respect pv first of all will gain a tremendous person and clifton in retrospect will lose an amazing person um i give you you know as mr casper said you will always have a home in clifton you're an amazing individual i think you will excel and exceed danny is lucky because he'll get to see you still on superintendent round tables but hopefully you won't be a stranger to the football games over at clifton so that forever tells you i don't know how we have to figure this out but we gotta get we gotta play tv um and set that aside memorial day as mr daley says it's not uh a way it's we should always honor our veterans we should always mourn our veterans because it is our veterans who put their lives at stake um [Music] no matter where and when daily annually in the decades in the history of this kind in this history of this young country it's not their fault where their countries put them but yet they put their side to to protect the people um of where they are trying to protect which is the united states of america and i for one am very lucky um to live in this country many people don't know is i for one um am very particularly lucky because i have stories in my life at my young age of 35 but one is that if my parents waited an extra few weeks to a month and a half i actually would have been born about palestine not in the u.s so i'm very thankful to my times and living in this in birth in this country because there's rewards i get to reap that others do not with that said education being one of them education is the most important thing to bring awareness access to education should be an equal opportunity for all ages especially children from k to 12.

and so uh we have found that to be very beneficial okay okay so that's what that's why i think we're enthusiastic about making this transition into an 80 minute block schedule next year it follows suit with a lot of our peers in durgby have made similar moves okay correct me if i'm wrong but our discussion also uh centered on our our faculty at the high school really like those bigger block times so that they can incorporate more um i don't know hands-on kinds of things in the classroom yeah there are a myriad of um positive benefits from an 80-minute period that are harder to derive in a 15-minute period so there is application more opportunity for application time where you know if you're familiar with a model of i do we do you do uh to stretch that over 80 minutes is much easier to facilitate and when you get to the we do part i don't know about you when i got home with my homework it's like damn i knew this in school yeah and so now when you're engaging in some of that work it it in the class there's a better opportunity to make sure that you know you you have that clarity of understanding and can follow through on it in the application component okay and you think and your your belief right now is that is even a positive because what i realized even though i kind of knew it in the back of my head seniors are very different from freshmen so you're thinking across the board the four years for all yeah i think 80 minutes okay absolutely there are developmental differences between students but um you know i think as ann was was getting to we're trying to engage students differently with movement with application in classes and that's going to look different when you're 14 than when you're 18.

going forward yeah we have taken a more conservative um projections and um you know we're following kind of the historical trend and that's between um about 400 between 300 400 next year um based on the demographic uh the democrats justification that um you know a lot of the young kids might not be entering our school system because of the pandemic um that you know the involvement declining the declining enrollment may not be um may not be as high in a typical year because we're going to start to see a lot of those young kids and and their parents sending them to school once once this situation is over um but going forward we're we're following the historical trends and we're being conservative and using um you know the the numbers around 300 to 400 um declining enrollment number so when you say three to four hundred is that 300 or 400 so that mean i guess what i want to know is it if we're going to be more accurate because if year after year was more like so then why would we adjust our budget to 300 when in actuality the ada is gonna um fall short and wouldn't it be better to just make the projections 400 because this year we lost 500.

these two have just carried us this last year through a countdown and they have been shining stars daniel no pressure i promise you'll be fine but here's the deal not only do we have one valedictorian missed a concert and i know this because she'd always talk about it and we'll be attending my alma mater cal state san bernardino in the park [Laughter] but here's the other thing about um nasal that she probably doesn't know for years i've watched her in the choir at our church and i've always just been amazed at her poise and ability to get up in front of an audience and just do her thing and so i don't know if you knew that but i so appreciate you and aaron for all the work you've done and i'm gonna miss you you [Applause] okay just going to pause for a few minutes and let um the you guys can leave we'll excuse you so you don't have to stay but good luck to you and um i can guarantee you're going to be very successful and we're looking forward to the new representatives we'll see you next time so have a good night thank you bye guys okay so do we have uh kylie do we have any reports from csca tonight yes representative you're here there she is you're ups [Music] and after that we'll have a buddha okay um well good evening wilson says is that better yeah can you hear me now [Music] is that better can you hear me mr yes um first i would like to say to everyone congratulations kudos and what a good job all of you here all of the kids all of the administrators we have survived an unprecedented year it's amazing and it's amazing that just as you had said tonight the students are the shining stars here because they've shown us as adults we can get through this this is what we're going to do and here's the adjustments we're going to make this is not our permanent condition it's just our condition on the way to something else so i want to tell you all how much i appreciate you you as board members have had to make a lot of decisions this year that weren't easy more definitely weren't comfortable and certainly not predicted um having said that um this week we've been celebrating classified school employees week and we're winding down at the end of that and we currently are winding up with our scavenger hunts we've had a virtual scavenger hunt going on the last couple days where members were encouraging our members to become more familiar with the school district website and just different things at their own work sites and so um it's been hard it's been a rough like i said a rough year but the classified school employees week has been a great way to end the school year um this evening i hope that you had an opportunity or will have in the next club session an opportunity to address our health and welfare agreement i'm hoping to hear something about that um any agreement that you see come before you um represents hard work and a lot of thought and consideration and some roll up your sleeves problem solving and um i appreciate the people that we've been given to work with um let me tell you matt schillenberg and dustin both were awesome in being able to help get this agreement put together and worded in a way that it said what meant um in closing i i'm hoping we're we're going to be in negotiations again tomorrow for the last time for the school year we won't be convening again until august and i hope that our exchanges tomorrow will indicate a renewed dedication to the things that we've worked for over the last decade or so so thank you have a good summer see you next year thank you thank you [Applause] you're up good evening board members and district admin i'm terry ray i am the vice president of a buddha but i'm this is i'm stepping down from that position to look forward to some other moving up into the district hopefully um so this the end of this year is fast approaching has been in trying year and year and a half with the pandemic but our members have not only made it through but we have excelled i've seen teachers make learning come alive in our zoom meetings members have had little to no technology experience has taken it with stride and hit the ground running learning how to do things in a very short amount of time i have seen counselors struggle with all the social and emotional needs of our students and make it work because they need to do what is best for our students which is why we got into this profession in the first place we have always been a family at avusd but this pandemic has only strengthened our bond and showed everyone that when we the district the members and the buddha work together there is nothing we can't do the district has really listened to the members and taken their feelings and worries into account before implementing any changes which only makes us work want to work harder lastly i want to thank the district and the school board for all they have done this school year and here's hoping to come back in the fall to a normal year thank you for your time thank you thank you so moving right along um we have some readouts from closed session and i have my order kylie i told you earlier so i still have them in order okay i know you're very organized so the very first item that we're going to read out and it's a appointment for adam powell as principal at granite hills high school range 16 column one on the search management salary schedule so uh reigns seven column one uh where she's [Applause] the board voted 5-0 to appoint you desert knowles principal so welcome aboard thank you she's another homegrown graduated 2000 uh from is it apple apple apple hi and now she's principal at desert knowles elementary school welcome aboard uh the second item a third item and this is to appoint dennis zimmerman as director of human resources range 13 column five to the human resources position on motion by bender and the second by raleigh the board voted four to one to appoint you to the where is he he's here area stand up 2.2 welcome [Applause] mr zimmerman's been in the business for a long time 30 years in the teaching and he comes over from snow line school district so welcome to apple valley yes thank you the best district in the high desert okay moving right along so item b5 was conference with labor negotiators so boards on a motion by uh uparra and a second by blessing game we approved the c-s-e-a chapter memorandum of chapter 8 828 tentative agreement article 11 compensation regarding health and welfare dated april 21st 2001 motion by so second by oak parra on a 5-0 vote motion pass so those are the items that um good okay okay moving right along uh we need to uh make an adoption of the agenda board may approve the agenda as is or add or pull items from consent uh agenda for discussion or action so do we [Music] is there any opposition to the motion okay hearing them that will be the order okay so basically the next one up is the recognition represent presentation by matt schulenberg on the maintenance operations department of team members thank you mr raleigh thank you we're getting close to public comments so if you guys are here to speak just the thing type will be there quickly shortly i'd like to share this evening a little bit of information and recognize some of my team members that support the students and the staff here at apple valley av usd participates in what's called the riverside schools insurance authority one of several one of several jpas that provide property and liability coverage to school districts in southern california regular property inspections are provided by this jpa as a service to school districts to assist in identifying possible hazards on and around school campuses representatives from our liability insurer southern california relief did conduct one of these inspections for apple valley unified earlier this year and did identify some potential hazards for repair and remediation some of those items are i don't know if you're familiar with the high desert and the temperature extremes asphalt seems to crack up here quite a bit wherever you go they did identify some excessive cracking on some of our campuses we have some schools and some teachers that like to put paper on their windows and they consider that a hazard unfortunately so we have to take care of that from time to time uh furniture that isn't uh in great condition so they did identify some of the furniture items that needed to be remediated um many of you have probably seen squirrels running around the high desert well they dig holes unfortunately they dig holes in fields so we have to pay special attention crystal uh to holes and fields but i want to recognize the apple valley unified maintenance and operations team because they responded to every item identified in this inspection repaired and remediated all items listed for the follow-up inspection in fact apple valley unified because of the dedication of the maintenance and operations team was on one of only five districts in this jpa of over 30 districts that completed these tasks for their follow-up inspection and i would like to introduce and have them stand where they are seated and be recognized i'd like to introduce jim hopper director of maintenance and operations kirk howe our maintenance supervisor and colleen bond our custodial supervisor [Applause] okay well they want to sit down but i just want to thank them for leading their team members on this effort and i want to thank them and all of the team members in the maintenance department and the custodial department who unfortunately couldn't be with her with us here tonight because of rules and distancing requirements but i do want to let them know apple valley unified because of their efforts was awarded the excellence in safety award by socal relief jpa again one of only five districts out of over 30 in that jpa presented in recognition of correcting all priority hazards before the follow-up audit so i want to thank jim colleen and kirk for your efforts and publicly recognize them so if you could join me again in honoring and thanking them and their team members you're here [Applause] thank you matt thanks for all the employees that showed up and hard work you guys do thank you appreciate it thank you moving right along uh we have pat schlosser's can recognize cli by literacy volunteers for 2021.

we are blessed to live in a country that avails education for all we live in a world that education does not afford equal access whether it is here in the united states or abroad over the past decade and year and weeks particularly the past few weeks we have noticed an imbalance of equality not only in education but social and political recognition oppression and aggression um i'm gonna reciprocate mr awad's sentiments where my prayers my prayers and i am going to repeat my prayers again these are commissioner comments are with people across the world particularly in the middle east for all people to be treated equal without duress and occupation education while we get to reap education and freedom of education the quality of education in this country education is a light for children to understand the works of the world and how our community works in order for fair equitable education children should not be caught in the middle of such atrocities that have been occurring over the past weeks and years and decades and all over the world particularly the middle east in order for fair equitable children education excuse me children should be able to attend schools without worrying whether their homes will be destroyed or their neighborhoods being ethnically cleansed by groups of people by that said children should be taught the truth of the world and not one side of history that's why we should be thankful for where we are today and hope that that the rest of the world gets to live in peace as mr awa said and my prayers are with the children of the west bank and within 1948 borders and in gaza you know why do i make these comments i make these comments because as somebody was born in this country i'm turning 36 tomorrow and i'm damn proud that i live in this country it's darn proud i apologize okay but i've gone six times back to palestine where my parents the land of my grandparents i've been detained i've been strip searched i've looked down the barrel of a gun to protect my sister yes i can tell you that story okay that's only three occasions out of the six i've come where i and many you know i went past and i was on the board two years ago maybe two and a half years ago and i went live on a lot of opportunities when i was there and my daughter comes back and i'm telling you this story has nothing to do with education but it's education in terms of we are always learning in this world we are always learning daily in this world in our lives there's not one person that can tell you i know everything in the world and i'm not nothing to learn well guess what they're full of it in their line because that we learn every day and you know my daughter comes back and has a really nasty dream and i said what's wrong and she told me on her own imagination and her own understanding and i told my wife not to teach her or tell her what side is what or which side is which says one one was my mama was shot in the back and i was shot in the lake and she referred to at the borders with guns and permits that we've been asked for by not palestinians i'm not going to say who you can use your own imagination so when people say to me or say to others to say to me stop what you're writing on facebook on my own personal page guess what and i made that very public today and yesterday you can't stop me you can't stop me it is my freedom my first amendment i will speak i have stories nobody can stop me because those are my own personal pages these are my these are my commissioner comments we get to speak right and again these are my words so i thank you anybody has questions i'm more than happy to explain miss gutierrez you took yourself off on mute and just to make sure that they're your comments they're not comments made on behalf of the board again mrs whoever's texting you say that to me i've said that five six times already this is not towards you i see i see phones i see fingers i see people texting i know no one no one's texting me mr i know who it is okay no one is texting me mr robert drama i've said it five times already these are my comments my commissioner comments and i'm going to keep it that way thank you thank you uh vice president abu drabo um first i'd like to uh commend um mr mcconney and the cast program on a wonderful job of your cast movie program that was held last week it was uh it was a great night under the stars it was it was a little chilly that night a little windy um but uh seeing the crowd of people that came out uh to support the students that did a tremendous job putting these uh movies together some of them were very touching uh some were confusing at times others were very funny and um i i just have to commend all the students for such a great job that they did on this uh and mr mcconney under your leadership and for all the work that they have done in the cast program uh throughout the entire year um every morning uh they made sure that the morning announcements were done remotely uh mr mcconney did a phenomenal job of piecing uh them together um but for these students to be able to keep the upbeat atmosphere uh even though they were in a very difficult year but to have the upbeat to uh put on the cast program to put on the morning announcements um is such a credit to mr mccutty and his program and to all those students that were involved in that you did a great job uh and i commend you and uh you know i i don't i don't i don't want to um try not to single anyone out um because each of those movies were were great in their own way um only because uh max is our our student representative and max's movie that he put on um about ocd um and how many people suffer from that disorder um really touched me tremendously and i know it touched a lot of people that that saw that and um for him to come out and and tell us about the the problems that he had with it growing up and how he got help and um it it truly was a tremendous job max but all of the cast program did a did a phenomenal job um from uh weightlifters in the weight room um to uh scenic uh uh expressions uh it just really was a nice night out under the stars at the top field uh with a big screen and other than it being a little chilly i enjoyed myself a great deal and last night as well the the band put on their their opus uh and congratulations to um uh mr stefanski uh brian did a uh uh a great job in putting this all together the music was wonderful um and uh seeing so many people to come out to to hear our band to support our band um it was a great outdoor event um going forward maybe that's something that they'll continue to do outdoors because i thought it was just wonderful they had a little bit better weather than the cast program did it was uh it was a beautiful night last night but a tremendous job to our band and to uh to mr stepnesski for the great job that he does with them all year long um uh vice president abu drabba i i do have to second your comments about max reuben and i i thank him for the dedication that he's given to not only uh himself but his fellow students to the clifton high school community uh but to the entire clifton community to have a young man of his character to come out um and and speak to the board speak to the public uh keep us informed of information uh did a phenomenal job going out in the referendum and being part of the referendum committee uh and getting other fellow students involved max you did a tremendous job this year we appreciate your reports that you brought to the board you'll truly be missed and i hope that other students will follow in your footsteps and get involved get involved in student government get involved in being part of the cast program get involved in the band and sports and our robotics program is is a top-notch program and cheerleading and gymnastics and and so many opportunities we have for clifton kids to get involved in um it would be a shame if you went through your high school years and didn't take advantage of any of those opportunities so please listen to max follow in his footsteps i'm sure he'll be able to answer any questions you have but please uh get involved and put your name in the hat so that uh we have a great representative here taking over for max next year um all the retirees uh again like to to thank all the retirees for for uh the input that you gave to our students to our kids to the clifton community um for whatever time it was uh we truly appreciate you we truly thank you and i wish all our retirees the best and i i hate pulling out people uh to because i'm so appreciative of everybody and i don't want to forget people but there's just a few people that i i do have to mention because they they've um they've impacted me quite a bit and i know them well um first uh our uh our girls basketball coach coach in tilly uh coach has been a a dedicated coach for so many years in many different sports in football and baseball and basketball and um we appreciate your dedication to the kids and coach brian small brian has been our bowling coach um for a gazillion years and many people don't think bowling maybe is not that exciting but clifton bowlers do a phenomenal job they represent clifton well and brian small you you've been a great coach to those bowlers and i wish i had you as a bowling instructor because uh i'm i'm definitely not a good bowler um but i know the kids definitely benefited from you and i thank you and um and mr healey i you know the district is truly losing a remarkable educator uh remarkable principal um and just a a tremendous person uh if you've never had the opportunity to talk to mr healey he just you walk away feeling so much better about yourself and better about life and he just is been so supportive of clifton the clifton district and our kids and uh anyone who's had them as a principal they they have nothing but great things to say about mr healy and uh it's been an honor to know him we wish him all the best in his endeavors and um i know that he'll make uh pv a better place because of the foundation that clifton will be sending you off with so i thank him and thank all the retirees for uh for a great job um our students that have made the national honor society uh what a great tremendous um accomplishment this is some students all four years all four years being on the honors society on the honor roll and some of them doing that uh with a 4.0 average um and being involved in many extracurricular activities so i commend those students uh for doing a great job in uh in being on the in academic excellence and being awarded to the national honor society memorial day um it's just not the start to summer as many people think it is um a day off um but it's a day in memory a day in memory remembering all those people that have fought for all of us to be in a country to be able to be free to speak our minds to speak what we believe to have a proper education um what a great place uh the united states is and and we truly are so thankful and grateful to all those uh present and those that have gone before us uh that served our country and continue to serve our country to help us remain free um i salute all of you and i remember remind our board members that our our band will be marching in the memorial day parade and that each commissioner is invited as well to march uh with the uh elected officials um so um i hope if you're not down the shore somewhere that the board uh could uh could support memorial day and march with our fantastic band um i want to uh are my two colleagues on the board um vice president abu drabo and mr awad i send out my my thoughts and my prayers to you and to your families for for all that's taking place in the middle east we just hope that peace can be in the minds of everybody and that peace can be uh something that's remembered and can come quickly um so those that may not be listening to us we hope that heads will get together and realize that peace is the better way um so um on that um i thank my board members again for being uh so diligent in um in your committees in your committee reports um those that are on negotiations uh the long hours of doing that and this year we have numerous negotiations to go through so uh and just so the public knows that the board does not rest over the summer the board continues to work it works hard our committees will still continue to meet and i thank my fellow commissioners for the great job they're doing in committees uh it really shows and uh and uh vice president abu drabo um i wish you a a very healthy and happy birthday as as those numbers go up our experiences of life also go up and um i know you've experienced some uh wonderful things in your life so far and i wish you uh peace and happiness in uh in all your years ahead so uh happy birthday and many more and uh on that i um i uh turn it over to dr robinsozzi thank you president smith uh tonight we uh the board voted to amend the 2022-23 school calendar and um this was as a result of a discussion that we held at our last meeting regarding the spring break traditionally in clifton the spring break had always um taken place uh the week prior to easter sunday and uh that was unlike many other districts so mr konova had suggested that we take a look at perhaps doing what many other districts do for the 2022-23 school year not next year and we surveyed our parents surveyed our staff and as a result of that survey was an overwhelming response that we got in favor of changing uh the spring break to to be in line with more what most of the other school districts too so 896 staff responded to the survey and 95 of them wanted this change uh and 1339 families responded and that breakdown was 85 percent wanted that change so um i just point that out because i just want to reiterate that this process does work right this board exists because you represent the community and if there's an issue that comes up you're supposed to bring it to my attention i'm supposed to get feedback and we're supposed to make a decision um for the betterment of of the community and so it's a small thing uh but i think it it shows that uh this board listens and i think that's a very very very good quality for a board of education as many of you all already know the governor governor murphy has lifted many of the covert restrictions in new jersey i want to reiterate and be very clear that many of the things that have been lifted do not necessarily impact our schools specifically in regards to the masking requirement the governor has specifically stated that um the the rules for our schools will not be changing um this school year however some good news came out of in regards to having outdoor events and a number of things like that so we're going to have a full high school graduation at our stadium we're still going to have to social distance but our the class of 2021 is going to be able to have a full graduation it's going to be able to have a senior prom it's going to be able to have a wonderful night on june 1st we have the uh senior night award ceremony so a lot of the things that are that our kids missed out on last year at least won't happen again to the class of 2021 i'd like to recognize i know miss lalama spoke about it earlier tonight about the cea pride and fast events that the the pride money that that they've received from the njea has brought in 190 000 over the last few years for programs that directly impact our students and their families just in the last couple weeks they started the latino incident the latino institute excuse me which will benefit many of our families there was a trivia game show night which i wanted to attend i don't know if it was the night we had a meeting or something but there was a trivia night where students got lots of prizes and it's really about this family engagement piece um and it just shows that our teachers do go above and beyond all the time not just during the school day but planning these events at night and it's nice that the njea it's more than nice that the njaa has supplied the cash funds to do these projects uh we had a speaker tonight who was discussing the esser funds and i want to i want to thank miss austin for bringing that up the esser funds are the funds that we're going to be utilizing for summer school summer enrichment this summer and after school enrichment next school year um that's one of the things that we'll be using the esser funds for uh for summer and and after school uh learning enhancement um and as for what school is gonna look like in september there are still a lot of variables that we're not sure but i can tell you this unless the governor changes his mind there will be no virtual option all students will be back or staff will be back full time if there is a student with an immunocomp immunocompromised condition then that student will be given the option of home instruction like in the past like prior to the pandemic if a student needed home instruction that was arranged and as for the three feet rule if the three free rule is still in place in september we are very confident that we'll still be able to bring back all of our students with the appropriate social distancing besides that we don't know yet what it's going to look like if a student is test positive for uh for covert or if a staff member tests positive for copay does that mean a whole class is going to need to quarantine we don't know what that means we know for sure that students and staff who are vaccinated will not have to quarantine so the public service announcement vaccines are now available for children ages 12 and above there's information on our website and on our social media of places where parents choose to get their children vaccinated they may um and finally uh for tonight on at our next meeting on june 10th i will be inviting the teachers who were the recipients of the governor's educator of the year award and the educational support professionals of the year to be recognized by this board of education to be recognized for that award is a tremendous accomplishment it's traditionally what we call you know the teacher of the year in each school building or the educational support professional of the year in each school building to get that award is a great honor to get that award for this year um arguably is even a bigger honor um and and and finally um let's all hope for uh peace uh in this world and uh and what's been a very difficult year for many people throughout the world some have it much more difficult than others so um we should count our blessings we should be thankful for what we have here in clifton and uh i am very thankful and very thankful for this board i'm very thankful to be in clifton and i look forward to doing many many great things together in the future thank you and have a wonderful night thank you dr robitosi okay we'll now move on to uh new business we do have uh an item for a new business dr orbitosi would you like to uh thank you mr smith uh commissioners at our last meeting we um voted the board voted to uh cancel the june 24th meeting that was on the calendar um and the board also uh voted to give 12-month employees off for those three snow days which i can tell you is very much uh appreciated by the 12-month staff and they're very very thankful for that our next meeting isn't scheduled until july 29th uh i am concerned that not having a meeting from june 10th until july 29th um that there is going to be too much time in between where business uh will need to get done so i'm proposing that we change the july 29th date to july 8th or another date earlier than july 29th that is convenient for all the commissioners if there's any discussion on that is there anyone that uh right now sees a conflict with uh july the 8th nope i'm seeing uh no none so uh we'll make a uh motion outside to uh i'm just outside we'll make a someone uh entertain a motion please i moved so mr casper second by then mr uc mr smith i apologize before we vote uh mr uc did um let me know the of a potential issue that i want him to bring to the attention of the board yeah i just want to look our august meeting is at the end of august correct i'm just looking real quick august yeah the august meeting is near the end like do you will you need another no need another meeting in between so yeah after dr robert tosi told me this i i thought it would be while we did a late one it it's better for closing out the books of the prior year and because we can get more done in july when we're closing the books out but we could have a july 8th meeting but it might be better to up the august meeting then um if that's okay because then there were going to be two months again almost um let's see removing the june meaning you know you may have to have two in august it's that's up to you you know what yeah i like i like having that august meeting late only because of late hires if we need to hire people for the school year but i'm certainly not opposed to having another meeting uh earlier in august maybe i know people have vacation schedules and stuff so you know people can't make it it's certainly understandable but what if we did the first week in august like would that work of course that would definitely work i mean we could schedule it and if it has to be canceled or removed i mean that that's fine too i mean so on that it looks like thursday august 5th mr smith yeah that's what it looks like august 5th um so why don't we uh wanna so if the uh mr um miss bassford would you amend your motion uh so we'll change the um our july july meeting to july the 8th and our august meeting will add an additional meeting on august the 5th we'll still keep the second august meeting unless administration advises us that it's not needed thank you thank you mr smith just an fyi that obviously i might not be here my sister's getting married out of state so and that's fine with me i want me to um i might not be july the 8th um i'm planning a vacation so yeah it's it's understandable board you know the board has other commitments and things but as long as we have a majority that could be there we have to set some dates here so all right so uh we'll have a roll call on moving the july meeting to july 8th and adding a august the 5th meeting it was first by uh miss pass for the second by who i'm sorry oh it was first by mr casper second by miss passport thank you mr awad yes miss bassford yes miss beltran yes mr daley yes miss danny yes mr casper yes yes mr aberdrabbo yes and mr smith yes so july 29th is is done right we're not we're not meeting july 29th correct correct so we'll let our next meeting will be on june the 10th after that will be july the 8th after that august the 5th and then our regularly scheduled one in august is 22nd 26 i'm sorry well 26th okay the pro appropriate advertisements will go out about those meetings so that the public is aware of those changes mr smith if there's no further business i like to make a motion to adjourn i have something still okay mr daley had informed me that he's pulling his um request for an executive session item um so we won't have to meet back in executive session on mr daley's item is there uh anything under new business um yes ms bashford yes can we get a firm data when we're coming back in person or uh are we gonna be coming back soon i asked my question i just wanna know if we could just have some kind of idea yeah uh i'll i'll talk to administration we'll see how we are on the uh the internet issues and uh because we're gonna have the the same issues that we have here we'll have uh still back at the uh the high school if they if we have not corrected them so uh we'll uh i'll be in discussion with the administration and i will inform the board thank you vice president abu drabo president smith thank you smith mr abdullah excuse me just uh i have a comment on miss bassford's question unless if you don't mind um i just wanted more of a question for anybody or maybe maybe for miss gutierrez do we know yet if we go back in person are we still going to be required to do the hybrid kind of meeting or can can we when we make that decision can we just be back in person um and have a traditional meeting did we have there been any guidance on that that anybody's aware of so yeah i can speak to that so if we're able to provide a meeting a location for a meeting that's large enough to provide social distancing whatever that number is because right now i don't know what that number of feet is i think it's three i'm not sure um so that people will not be turned away if they come if the public comes then you can have the medium in person without having to have it uh also remotely but you can so obviously then the public can come and speak in person but you can also provide the public with the opportunity to send in comments by email up to a certain time before the meeting or up to the start of the meeting in case they don't want to come in person they're at least as if that's that's the latest uh that might change between the next few days but right now so it so basically the the high school auditorium is large enough given the what you normally expect of public relations i'm a little confused a little confused on our last discussion you had told me that um that as long as there is a pandemic that we have to still offer a zoom a virtual right and now that's been clarified some more so that we can as long as we're able to allow people to come in so that we don't turn anyone away so like you couldn't have it in the boardroom i don't believe the regular boardroom because it's too small for everybody but if you had it if you have it in the high school auditorium that's large enough to accommodate a large number of people and not have to turn anyone away then you can handle it that way but that's the famous materials as long as there are there's a capacity limitation on the inside of the gathering that's still inhibiting people from attending technically maybe unless we do like a waiting room in the case three cafeteria and then people can file out and then next bunch of proof comes in right so unless but you're generally not unless you're expecting a thousand people to show up which generally speaking in person you don't get that you get even if you have all the people that normally would come to the board room they all fit in the high school just from i mean i'm not a an engineer or anything but it seems to me that there's enough room in the high school auditorium to fit all of those people so okay so we so we no longer are required to have a zoom during the pandemic as long as we can allow people to come in in person and speak yes if you were discussing so it's on a case-by-case basis if the subject was going to be something that you're going to expect you know a thousand parents to show up then you know you don't have enough room for them but on a general basis you're just anticipating your normal number your usual number of members of the public and you have a space that's large enough to accommodate that then you can do that not every school district has has a an auditorium of the capacity that clifton high school has right so then that if we went back in public then public the public to address the board would only be in person no zoom or virtual option you wouldn't have to do zoom it would be recommended that you give the public the option to send in comments um if you're not going to do a zoom you could do it you don't have to but you could give them the option of sending in email comments for example up to a certain time up to the up to the start of the board meeting okay now we also had a discussion about um so board members that can't attend a meeting for whatever reason but can attend virtually are we required to have that option available so right now as long as the health crisis as long as there's still a public health crisis and the governor hasn't declared that to be over yet although there's been this there's been talk about it in the news that he might be declaring the public health crisis over i don't i don't know where that stands but as long as the public health crisis exists there can be the option of having a remote board meeting if there is no public health crisis this rema the remote doesn't work there would have to be some kind of a special board policy adopted to allow for remote access to a meeting such that the members of the public can hear what the board member is saying and can hear the participation okay so if a board member because in the past if a board member was sick they just stayed home sick and they weren't part of the meeting so now because there's still a pandemic correct if a board member was sick and at home or whatever reason they could have the option of attending the meeting through a zoom as long as the public could hear what that board member was saying is that what i'm hearing that is correct that's what i'm saying before the before the pandemic a board of education couldn't have remote uh sorry there was no option for remote but there was an option for calling in if the board had a policy or if there was some kind of a court order that allowed for that to happen and most boards of education don't have that kind of a policy that board members call in because then there's a then there's a um you know it's almost like a slippery slope do you have you have one or two board members but what if you have all nine board members just calling in and then you know the public is just left there with a bunch of tip with a telephone so there's no clear cut answer on that but clearly during the pandemic there was a specific there was a specific order that allowed for remote meetings so that exists until the health crisis as long as the health crisis continues when the governor declares that there's no more health crisis or when the legislature adopts a bill saying there's no more health crisis then the zoom the the remote option is is over they're arguing over that bill right now they're arguing over that bill for the record the high school auditorium has 1062 seats yeah it's that's big so the issue doesn't seem to be mr smith as i say it doesn't seem to be the public the issue seems to be the board members being virtual and that's kind of where we had our technical issues in the past haven't we well yeah you know the the issue becomes if if if we still have to offer a virtual issue then we still have an issue at the high school we still have an issue with the tv station all that if we don't have to offer any of that and we're just going back live as we did before and we're just not doing it at school six because of the restrictions um then we're just live so that's what we're trying to get the answers to maybe there's some other technological alternative that can be made for board members who are not able to come in person i don't know uh miss password do you know offhand uh i'm putting you on the spot you know offhand if we have such a policy no we have a policy to offer remote because we changed that last year but we've never done anything else in our policy book because we've never faced it uh we we don't even we don't we've never instituted the calling policy either because uh back in the ten years that i've been on the board the board the pass board uh felt that it was not appropriate to allow somebody to call in during the meeting only unless there was a special vote going on if they were sick and we voted on that one provision but no not at all right so mr lisa that was my next question so unless we have a policy a board member cannot call in and vote on something is that correct during normal times during normal times but since we're still in the pandemic since we're still in a health crisis all i'm suggesting is that perhaps there's some other alternative that would accommodate being able to be in person and accommodate whatever whichever board member is not able to come in person and i don't know i don't have the answer to that for example we could have a a phone a speaker phone in place of the board member who's not there so they can hear us talking and the public could hear them talking that's i guess i would say that was that would be like an accommodation that we'd be making for that board member only because of the pandemic but if the emergency ends at the end of the month which people are saying the governor might end the emergency at the end of the month then it's back to normal so under normal circumstances a board member can't call in and vote unless there's a specific board policy that allows for that that change and so you can discuss that you can you can decide whether or not you want to have that policy and have certain parameters under which that would occur that's up to you that's up to you up to all of you we could bring it back to policy i i would yeah i think it should be come back i'll bring it back to policy in this way it can be discussed if anybody has anything they want to include please email me so we get it i get to told the members and i'll do some research like i always do to see what other districts are doing with the state all right vice president abu drabo you had a thank you president smith yeah uh i found out last week that dr valente who many probably already know from ccms the old principal passed away three years ago and i don't remember if we ever did a resolution on his behalf after him passing mr uchi oh sorry through the president to the superintendent if we can find out if we can do that uh for our next meeting um i for one thought he was an amazing phenomenal individual and great principal and it has had impact on my life and i'm sure others who went through that through that individual school um if we did not i if i like to request that we do some sort of resolution in his honor i know his uh didn't even know that his daughter teaches in the district i found out through another avenue that somebody told me he passed away and it was a shock to me so if we could do something and if you can give it to his daughter that'd be i think that would be great all right administration will look into that and uh get back to the board on that thank you i have one i have one other question um yes how are we handling uh mask wearing if a student has uh um issues with handling that uh are we making special accommodations for the students and what's the protocol that they should what what do they have to do because i got i got somebody asked me today so um i'll i'll answer that and i'll ask janina to add on if i miss anything uh we have had very few issues uh miss vassar but as you stated if a parent contacted you their first step would be in contacting their child's teacher or the principal to make them aware that the child is having an issue we can certainly make accommodations for that child to have either more mask breaks or some other accommodations you know depending on what the issue is um the masking rule is still in effect janina the main thing that has been done for any students having issues um has been training working with our district behaviorists so in short miss basswood i would have the parent first contact the teacher um and the principal and i'm sure that they will make some sort of accommodation for the child if for any reason they are unsuccessful in getting the assistance they need please just have them contact my office thank you all they're listening so and um i'm gonna i just wanna about the policy we had uh talked about having committee meetings virtually um i think we we should bring that back to policy to put it in writing so we have something on the books and then this way we can address maybe all this other um things in in policy as well like i said if anybody has anything get it to me and i'll make sure the policy committee reviews it and we'll discuss thank you uh dr robertosi not to prolong the conversation but again because it's so unclear uh so people were asking last night at the at the band thing so the governor released the outdoor wearing of masks um for vaccinated people i believe so have we updated anything in our policy that any event outside is now master not required people didn't know what to do last night mrs smith it's my understanding that that still does not apply to school events with the exception of njsiaa sponsored athletic events i will double check and make sure and send that guidance out to the board that is my understanding right now i'm certainly hoping that that changes by the time all of our other outdoor events are happening in june when it's going to be hot you know i can't imagine all of our students and their families sitting at graduation with masks on outside when many of them will be vaccinated as a superintendent i'm required to enforce the policy as is so as bad as the policy will enforce it but i'm hoping that that changes okay so as of now the policy still remains that he at a school events the mass still be worn unless you get other clarification from it you'll let us know yes sir okay everything's changing yeah well absolutely every day but daily but didn't didn't the governor release that of all outdoor public space events not necessarily not to schools because that's how that's how i read the executive order because the schools follow the new jersey department of health guidance and that has not changed maybe it will it could be you know it could be changed tomorrow morning or it could have been changed and they just didn't tell you and and dr rotozi um or through you president smith dr josie um if a student is having a mask issue would a shield suffice in lieu of under our current policy no no okay i just want to click on that thank you shield is not cbc compliant yeah no i i just wanted to i just want i i mean if i remember correctly but i just wanted i don't remember if that were those the words that's why i said no when superintendent but also this way the public can understand that it's not as well thank you yeah all right mr daley i'll entertain a motion motion to attract adjourn second uh by mr daley seconded by vice president albertravo any objection seeing none meaning adjourned thank you all

um and the other thing is too with an 80-minute block opportunities like you know i know you're familiar with our portfolio-based assessment for graduation requirement there are more opportunities to do engagement off-campus on those things later uh in the show i'll be talking about uh richard chevrolet and some of the stuff they've done with our kids and how you know these extended blocks of time provide us more opportunities for really uh deep and engaging work that you might not be able to cover in 50 minutes okay thank you again i think it's quick i think these are really quick um the four days versus five days you're gonna move to a five day schedule you're not yeah okay and you're just gonna rotate it like abcd like you do in the elementary schools it's okay it's gonna it will be a rotating schedule yeah we will maintain that there are some quirks in the sense that we have shared staff with the middle school so it's it's not you know they're gonna be injured easy to describe i was a principal there for four years i still couldn't tell you the schedule but it was a little sophisticated for me and i'm wondering about you mentioned uh the business department giving credits at tungsten is it like how many cr how many credits could a student get and is it possible to like get to the point where you even had nearly have an associate's degree by the time you graduate high school right we have go-getter yeah we have a number of students who take what's called dual enrollment courses so uh we're excited that you know we had previously only leveraged uconn for those classes and really this started to um come into favor right as i was uh leaving my tenure at cheshire high and mary was was becoming principal we realized that you know a student could take an ap class and those are incredibly beneficial we really believe that every student should take one college style class before they leave cheshire high school and for some that ap is the best fit for that but ece is an incredible early college experience opportunity through uconn where you can take a three-click credit class for i want to say it's like a hundred dollars it's incredibly cheap it's i think it was nice uh yeah it's my daughter took a few dozen yeah i think it might even be less than that two years yeah transferable credit so that's really powerful but not everybody is going to be appropriate as a high schooler to take a yukon level course and nor might they not have those interests and so we're really excited to be uh to have a community college partner to provide us a broader range of courses with more opportunities for our kids to take collegiate level class so yeah i mean we have kids that graduate with at least a full year of credit uh in some cases it's rare to get credits in a year but over your high school career but at least a semester i should say of credit that's not uncommon thank you i if i could just add i think these relationships with the community colleges are are just they're perfect that they're perfectly suited uh to be working with these high schools and um i just give a lot of kudos out to uh leslie pair and you know the business department because um cultivating these relationships and it's really to great benefit for our students yeah mary in our guidance department there are a lot there's a team of folks that have really been trying to provide these options for our kids and i'm excited that we're expanding thank you andrew did you have a question yeah i just when you were talking about the change of the schedule at cheshire high school has that been decided for next year or is it still being yeah we are making that change and i i know mary was sending out information i i apologize i'm not positive if it went out already or not uh i know like we've been pretty well caught up in graduation stuff and guidance uh changing but uh it i know she's discussed it with the pta at least thank you it hasn't gone out formally yet any other questions for ann on the qriket committee report thank you very much you're welcome uh see here i got too many documents open on the next uh we have finance uh starting with the financial report uh adam and vincent i assume you're gonna tag team this thank you mr chair i will graciously uh hand the meeting over to mr maciana thank you mr grippo good evening everyone i am about to share my screen hopefully you can see we're good yep okay so i'll walk through the financial report uh first and this report will be rather brief um you know we've completed 10 months of the fiscal year uh you know i would say that we are in very good shape to meet our budget i don't foresee any issues now that we've got 10 months completely down you know during the month of april may and early june what we will be focusing our energies on and it's already started in earnest is you know looking at any open purchase requisitions reducing those or closing those that we will not need for the remainder of this fiscal year we're also end entering new purchase orders for the purchases that we do need to make between now and the end of the year also in may we open up the supply bid and release that to all the schools so all the schools will be entering their supply needs for next year we also make um all the arrangements for purchases of equipment uh quotes are being obtained for you know maintenance and summer projects that we have to do that we fund out of our operating budget with the funds we have also summer curriculum work is being planned and encumbered for purchase of textbooks technology so all that activity you know culminates over the next several weeks and then um that leads us to look toward june 30th when we will you know work with the board of education to make the final entries to close our books for the fiscal year um but what i do want to leave the board with is that we are in very very good shape for a good close to this this year's budget um which starting the year we really didn't know what to expect but you know we got through the year in really good shape the medical benefits report i'll i'm not going to touch on from this report i'll i'll come back and i'll present the report and there's a problem loading the page so three of the four pages load of course the page that i need isn't loading so bear with me just one second let me see if i can bring that up and if it's uh part of our financial reported packet we have those pages we can look into what you're doing yes it is i had the same problem i i just refreshed the document it seemed to come back yeah you can also just down you can download it from the buttons up there yeah that's what i did okay so you could see this one that's got the purple columns to the right yeah yes okay so what this is it's an update on the sr2 um and the rps or grant funding that we um did get approval for the requests we made for the so2 funding which is 439 559.

i think it's kind of the same answer if you look at we have to go by numbers from study from something it's not just like uh um our own estimate we need to kind of base these calculations trust each other on solid data more than just like i think i think we're gonna lose four or three colder has to use numbers that are collected you know in in terms like in this particular case he explained to you we're using the demographic study do you see the slide on the screen right now no it's blank blank okay is there a way we can edit it to make it bigger because the numbers were so small before i couldn't see any of the numbers when you you brought it up on the demographic study can you enlarge it for us please you see that now wait can you do it a little bit more and just pull it up so we don't have to see the top thank you so like i said it's oh you just moved it it's 400 and something each year uh yeah so uh if i think our numbers will be more accurate reflection if we do start with 400 versus doing it with 300 is all i'm saying thank you yeah as you can see here the other involvement projection we're using to um to base to build our budget on so for this year uh we're using the democrat demographic study numbers and as you can see next year um you know the based on the the market for justification in terms of that you may get a lot of the young students back next year um that number is a little lower when compared to um the the trend in other years but if you see going into year 2223 we're projecting um a a decrease of 415 students so those are the numbers yeah because i'm seeing here that just in 2021 uh right here their figures are off because we lost 500 not 400.

thank you this will be a brief presentation the volunteers are not here because we weren't sure we could bring there but i have a brief presentation and we'd like to recognize them and we'll get their certificates to them this is for the seal of bi-literacy effort that we do at the end of each year this is a really special recognition that students can earn that shows that they are literate in two languages and so the way that kind of works is first of course they must demonstrate proficiency in english they do that by a variety of ways but their their their course grades or test scores which we did not have this year and of course they have to demonstrate proficiency in a second language they can do that also in a number of ways an advanced placement test um coursework and then of course if they're if it's via four years of course work there also has to be an interview and for some languages that's easy for us to conduct and for other languages we have to rely on our community volunteers this year these are the languages we had um many students in spanish and french and then some other languages including vietnamese and mandarin that were represented this year this is uh 68 recipients so far and nine pending their ap results which is for us our highest year and maybe that i could find ever in the midst of a pandemic and the way that happens is our volunteers teachers working extra time bilingual support staff tirelessly interviewing conducting zoom sessions with these students and grading their work and so we're really proud of the this effort and what this represents for our community and this is a designation that helps students when they move to college level because often it will take care of their foreign language requirement at the university level and so we want to uh thank michelle pham who helped us in vietnamese she did not provide a picture although we asked her to and so we will make sure and recognize her and give her and vet her well when we see her again soon and uh her for her role in that work and then this is chao ying su who also for our chinese mandarin speakers did a wonderful job of helping them to demonstrate proficiency and so just a round of applause for those two community members thank you pat okay we'll move on to uh public comments uh and i'd like to remind you guys the board of trustees would again like to remind members of the community that you may remove your mask while making your public comment if you feel comfortable doing so and with that um you're limited uh to three minutes uh per speaker and the first one up is uh brandon is it sorely friend yes your first stop sir thank you [Music] i think i got it that's good good evening um i'm just here to talk about mass mandates at the school um i didn't really prepare anything other than i printed out a few uh documentations on research and studies done i feel that math should be an individual choice for both students and teachers i of course teachers they have to deal with the union so that's their thing but i have two two two kids that are going to school and i really think that they should have a choice whether they wear masks or not so on these three items that i printed out i just show i have here one directly from the cdc website um on their discussion which is their closing statement they say that they show there's no evidence that mass do anything um so i printed out three copies here so if you guys watch these you can have them um the other thing i printed out was a a compiled research done by a guy named rancourt i don't know if you guys have heard of them all he did was compile all the studies done from 2009 all the way to 2020 and it shows that in all of these studies mass against there's no evidence for a basis of mass so um again you guys can have those and then i printed out a third one here this one is uh it was done by a doctor uh that is the 17 harms that mast can do to people um you can go through these and everything but the most important thing that i came across um on page three in here above the number four uh comment there's a guy named dr omar clark and he did a video and on his video he takes his own daughter to a doctor another doctor who uh hooks her up to an oxygen machine to see how the oxygen is affected in her body it's very intriguing so i would recommend for you guys to check that out so okay thank you brandon um next up is emmy after emily would be monica hello my name is emmy lease i'm a resident in apple valley and my son goes to school in apple valley and um again i'm just here to talk about the masks i don't have anything prepared but just to say um we hope that the 20 2021-2022 school year can have mass be an option for the kids um for the very same reasons he pointed out and um so i just hope that maybe it gets to the point where the board can vote on that being an option um i know that we have to follow county guidelines and everything and i have also made public comments to the county supervisors meeting so hopefully we can all get to that point and that's all i have to say thank you thank you thank you [Applause] monica king after monica will be i believe it's our marquez marcus good evening everybody my name is monica and i just want to start by saying how grateful i am for all of you during these times i can't imagine the difficult decisions this past year has brought our schools have done their best with the information that is flip-flopped you've received conflicting guidelines i really commend you i want to talk today specifically on mass i strongly feel they need to be a choice by parents this has gone on way too long and my children will not return to public school next year if this doesn't end now i know you feel you don't have the power to make a change but you are all very smart people that can think for themselves these parents tap dollars tax dollars fund these schools and it is not okay to sit back and let this continue on it is time now to stand up and give families their choice to decide what is best for their own children's health the cdc odh dr fauci have proven their inconsistent guidelines over and over again and have proven to be not credible at this point they are not in charge of our freedoms our rights and our liberties these mass on these children and allowing them to carry this burden of this pandemic has affected them long enough and i'm done with it i've heard things like children are resilient but are they at what cost this is a cop-out to justify our lack of willingness to advocate for them mental health is the easiest thing to ignore i've spent so long on research on this and have highlighted some points worth sharing that proved mass do more harm than good according to cdc 266 ages 0-17 have died from covid19 this is tragic during the 2018-2019 flu season 477 kids in that age range died of the regular flu also in 2019 we lost 2 485 kids under 18 to traffic accidents 766 to drowning and an alarming 2156 to suicide that has gone up we have not banned swimming or cars we live in a world full of risks so what do we know at this point it is rare for children to spread coven 19 to adults asymptomatic spread is not common spread in schools is not common kids have a 99.997 percent chance of survival rate after coming in contact with covet 19. so what about safety of staff at this point they need to take the initiative for themselves they have the choice now to be vaccinated if they so choose they can double mask wear a shield but my children's health mentally physically and emotionally will not be sacrificed for the comfort of staff members all of my children and all the children all they want are their basic human rights back take off the dang mass give a smile and a hug let our kids breathe fresh air let them smile at one another and let them be free and let them be children i won't comply with this unlawful coercion there needs to be liability so who is liable for the psychosocial physiological effects on our children please make mass a choice and do it now it is not ethical to continue this path when there is no scientific justification for our children to be wearing these masks thank you very much thank you monica thank you [Music] is it a cruise and after um next will be rochelle thank you for allowing me to speak here today um never done this in my life so excuse me if i get emotional or nervous or anything like that hello my name is mary cruz elise and i have been an apple valley resident for 15 years my kids have attended abusd schools they're in their whole school life we love living here and are grateful for the amazing teachers and staff throughout their lives so far i'm here to speak out against the use of face coverings i do not agree with them and believe they may be harmful the only reason why i allow my kids to return to school is because they desperately wanted to see their friends and be with their friends i also felt it would bring some kind of normalcy back into their lives although masks were a requirement i felt the benefits outweighed the risks it was only two days a week for a few hours so i felt fine and i i thought it was okay i'll allow it and anything more than that no i will not i have taught my kids that masks are nothing more than a facade and that government overreach is a real thing i want to raise free thinkers and people who use common sense i have also taught them in the beginning how to properly wear a mask under their nose so they can breathe the fresh air that god created and now i don't wear them at all and i don't put any on my kids i don't regret my decision and my kids are better for it by the cdc's own admissions an organization you all have been following guidelines for say that children have little to no chance of contracting covet or giving it to others so before you impose all these guides on our kids did you ask yourselves what are the long-term effects on wearing a mask is oxygen level being affected what are the physiological effects well i don't know if you did or what your thought process was but a big red flag for me was when the cd flipped the script from you don't need to wear a mask two they are mandated now dr fauci in the beginning said that there's no reason for anybody to be wearing a mask and it just makes people feel better for a little bit and it might even block some droplets but it doesn't provide the perfect protection that people think that it is that is also the man who has just been tied to funding a lab in wuhang china for doing gain of function research so if that doesn't raise any eyebrows to you i don't know what will also u.s surgeon general dr jerome adams says that surgical mass do not protect you from respiratory viruses it has leaks all around it is designed to barrier protection for people in the or hence the name surgical mask the n95 mask must be do you have a few more comments you'd like to make real quick i can't hear you your time is up give you a few more wrap it up sure thank you basically i feel the same as all the other people have spoken before me face masks should not be required they haven't been proven to work if they had then you know what was all this why did all this end up happening um yeah i just feel like the cdc is getting it wrong they've been getting it wrong this whole time and we need to step up and stand up for our kids thank you for your comments um rochelle areas sure she had ffa awards her shoes that she had to go to an ffa award for her child [Music] that's it back once more um i'm speaking for rochelle tonight michelle arias um she just has a quick um update says hi i'm michelle i'm sure you all remember me from last meeting i just wanted to give you an update on our fight towards mask making mass optional for our students i have been in contact with superintendent nelson and also supervisor paul cook's office and a contact at the county department of health we are all working toward a common goal and i am confident that we have the great that we have a great team together with all the parents here today and at home i was able to attend an unmask the kids rally this week and it turned out great throughout the summer we will be continuing our fight and i will be updating you all at the future meetings thank you okay that does it for public comments uh kylie is there any more cards anybody coming late and uh i want to say we appreciate the parents coming in here and speaking it takes a lot just to spend some time in the middle of the evening coming here and getting up podium and speaking on this topic it is a very contentious topic there's a lot of interest in it and we're very hopeful that when school starts in the fall that this won't be the issue anymore but well i can say speaking for myself i agree 100 with you yeah like dressing your kid up for halloween every damn morning so but again thank you for your comments and um we appreciate it greg if i may i think for the parent that's that spoke i spoke last time last poor meeting we i'm also in a uh not an agreement with where i'm at because it's my i have two dollars there are doctors okay and i might you know see i don't where it just see we have to follow the county and stake ionized that's a problem with the being a school district so we're going to conflict about that but we want to make we and i as a as i think as a board member and fully uh understand the the constraints on the kids for example i watched tv about the mentor live sport meeting that the young lady don't get enough oxygen when she was running with the mass she fell down okay so these are concerns that we have but we have to follow the safety guidelines imposed by the county health and the county superintendent of schools as well as state department education so we're going to work with a state in the county and say one can we get rid of this requirement on mass well may say something sure um unfortunately as the board we really do not have a say so in regards to this however the superintendent has made contact with all of the elected officials and all of your comments will be forwarded to them so that they know that you are really serious about this mask mandate so if if i can employ you to just sit tight with you pushing and the superintendent pushing we are going to hopefully have a response for you in the near future okay thank you thank you again moving along we have uh superintendent comments from uh um in response to all of the comments i first want to point out that um what ms okpara said is accurate i contacted supervisor colonel cook's office and i feel like we are extremely fortunate tonight to have um kimberly messin in the audience kimberly if you just let everybody know who you are you are field representative for um supervisor cook's office yeah sorry you are not a field supervisor um i didn't demote you i promise so um but kimberly i reached out to her and invited her um and she was more than happy to show up here tonight um willing to take that information back because as the board of supervisors part of their role is the work with the san bernardino county department of public health and so any of the comments that are provided tonight will be provided to all levels they'll be provided to um supervisor cook's office assembly person thurston smith representative jay albernaulty and senator scott wilks and i don't want you to believe that the board can take a vote to change what has happened we are a public entity that is governed by the rules that are set by the state um i'm going to read you the email that i sent to each of those groups yesterday um that is i had already talked to kimberly so the others i felt needed the same information because this is not something even san bernardino county supervisors can necessarily change it has to continue up the chain for for a couple reasons so i'm reaching out to all of our state and local officials to communicate a concern the families we serve in the apple valley unified school district have expressed at our last board meeting a parent came to advocate for students to be able to attend school mask free in the fall i understand the local concern and the fact that the data is limited however the conflicting messages from the cdc are state and local governments governmental entities does not allow school districts to appropriately answer the concerns we are often told it is a local decision however we all know if a local decision is made that is contrary to guidance we are risking our liability of stewardship of public funds tomorrow night we will hold our regularly scheduled board meeting at 5 30 pm which was for tonight and i have been given a heads up that parents are planning to attend and comment publicly again i am unsure if this means one parent or 15 but i want to reach out and encourage each of our elected officials to recognize this is an issue and help us to have a united consistent message to our local community and then i signed it with my information and then i will tell you that i also was on the phone with the department of public health different issue but asked to talk about mass guidance and any change in direction that is occurring and so i was immediately sent an email that conveyed the current status so i want you to have that as parents to understand that there is some other things going on on may 17th the california department of public health cdph so that's the the one over the san bernardino county department of public health released the most recent statistics on covet 19 update and mass guidance so i'm reading you from them this is not my words california will keep its existing guidance around masks in place until june 15th when california aims to fully reopen the economy as of may 3rd 2021 face coverings are no longer required outdoors except at crowded events and for unvaccinated people when physical distancing cannot be maintained in indoor settings outside of one's home including public transportation and schools face coverings continue to be required regardless of vaccination status after june 15 california plans to implement the cdc's guidelines around masking to allow fully vaccinated californians to go without a mask in most indoor settings this four week period will give californians time to prepare for this change while we continue to our relentless focus on delivering vaccines particularly in underserved communities we urge all californians to get out and get vaccinated to ensure that infection and hospitalization rates remain low across the state and that we can all return to activities we love those are not trenay words those are from the department of public health but i want to let you guys know that on top of that my question followed up with um there is no requirement for students to be vaccinated so i want to make sure that that information is shared with you and the fact that there was a rumor that we were holding vaccine um discussions as town hall meetings none of that has happened nor has the the rules changed that we can require staff nor students to be vaccinated nor can we vaccinate your children without you giving permission to do so so all of those are rumors my biggest recommendation is if you hear something please contact one of us we are here to answer your questions and we are here to set the record straight as for masking i asked what that meant for our students that cannot be vaccinated because right now the 12 and above is available for vaccination that's a parent choice however the they are currently in trials for younger children so i asked what that meant how what's the timeline because there are families that might take that as an option i'm not saying that that's their you know the option i'm just saying from a choice perspective and they are in trials and do not anticipate children under age 12 having the ability to be vaccinated until the earliest in november so that means opening school based on this statement would include masks that's the assumption i am making but that does not mean it will come to fruition because this is a fluid situation the department of public health was very clear that it can change at any minute and we've seen that we've seen that with the changes but having kimberly here means that supervisor cook's office will have the information and be able to take it back and i will continue to send those things those directions okay thank you thank you thank you thank you board member comments uh adeline first of all congratulations to all the departments for their wonderful work um we can't do it without you so um the other thing is i'd like to say i was again impressed by the performances that i watched last last week and um really entertained super job i have to take my hat off to those teachers that are in charge of that program because if you haven't seen those kids perform you need to because they are absolutely outstanding and in this time and age where they're going to school from their homes to put on a show that they put on was absolutely incredible and um i look forward to all of you seeing you all next year um and thank you very much thank you wilson i just want to extend our congratulations to the staff new members that's going to join us congratulations thank you thank you dennis i like to come and all of you that got promoted tonight i hope you enjoy your new charge and especially the makings and operations you guys are the ball bearings of the school in world war ii that's what we killed bombed barbarians and oil and i'd like to compliment our secretary of the school board and your secretary she ran that american hero at vanguard and she's the equivalent of a marine drills instructor i'm glad you called it american hero instead of american idol because we're still not allowed to report on that [Laughter] good job kylie maria all the way uh from uh texas texas texas um i have to take this time um to thank all the parents who came out this evening to speak on behalf of their children um this is what we are really looking forward to we want parents to be involved and to ask all the key questions and to expect response and i'm hoping that the response you received from the superintendent today gave you everything to actually pause and and know that we are looking at your children secondly i would like to congratulate the two presidents of the two high schools um who served their schools faithfully even during the pandemic and i'd like to also congratulate the staff of the maintenance and operations for keeping our schools open and this uh functional thank you ma schulenberg um for leaving that group and again i'll see you all on monday when i come back on sunday thank you so much for allowing me this opportunity to welcome my new grandchild thank you maria i just like to mention that the i'm going to have in person graduations um beginning on may 24th for all the uh high schools and i believe it will probably be on our website of the dates and times where these are at uh beginning on monday may 24th uh at the newton bass uh stadium so it's good you know the kids last year they missed out on this but this year we're actually going to be able to pull it off so it's a good thing so to see uh see us all there um with that we don't great for good weather yeah well it's always windy so um we have no public hearings at this time and no special meetings so we'll move on to item i discussion session is recommended the board of trustees discuss and take action on the following items prove the uh sophisticated problem with saying that in classified personnel actions as listed so would you have a motion motion vendor second lasting game is there any opposition to the motion uh so that'll be the order 500.

uh what i do want to point out to the board is there's been a change to the amount of funding we'll receive under our esser the original estimate we had was a million ninety one thousand and if you could see where my cursor is that amount after being passed by the senate um our final approved amount was 898 0147 so it came down about 190 000 over what we um were originally advised it would be not the end of the world but it is a lower dollar amount and again as we explain to the board we intend on using these funds you know next fiscal year and as much as we can over the following two fiscal years the top section is really what i wanted to just focus on for a second so um a grant application was submitted to the state for the um original 439 559 and you'll see that these top eight or so categories are all labeled learning laws they total the full 439 thousand 559 and again i know the board members have this in their package but what we'll be covering in 2122 you know with that learning loss category is everything from the summer transition program that we'll be conducting in august for those students that were remote that will be coming back to school in the fall you know as well as additional tutoring time we expect to need you know the addition of the administrator uh and coaching supports that we have planned for next year that jeff presented at last at the last board meeting the certified math tutors at dodd and cheshire high school additional teacher and staff training to address learning laws administrator training certification for english learner needs as well as some home school support so you know we've identified the state's approved that grant funding for those particular purposes and again that that's part of esther ii the rest of the items that we have on this list you know they're really kind of early estimates at this point and i'll point to the just the first one you know we have 150 000 of that grant identified as possibly being needed for tent and table rentals whether or not we'll need that in the fall we we hope not to need it um but depending on how the infection rate goes over the summer comfort level you know of parents and students and staff we may need to to use that and if we don't need it then that 150 000 obviously becomes available you know and we'll use it for the needs that we have over the next two fiscal years so i just wanted to point out to the board that there have been some adjustments made on those two grants that we have use of so i'll pause there i'll stop sharing my screen for a moment and see if there are any questions on the that portion of the financial report are there any questions i can't see all of you let me see hold on a second let me change my view catherine and andrew in that order oh here we go i see the chat okay looks like tim go ahead thanks adam then you had mentioned if i caught you caught it correctly there was some funding in there for uh teaching in relation to english not as a first language correct how many students do we have in town who the english is not their first language is there a number you can give maybe marlene or jeff can i would say we're at least at about 84.

okay thank you thank you um and i see with harano's hand up i was going to say a few comments and myself but go ahead and begin and then i'll go ahead and um i mean you kind of won i've talked a lot okay that's pretty short um mine is just that uh you know i understand we have to use solid data to make these decisions to the extent possible as best we have with these projections and things i also just kind of um along the same lines of what trustee chavez is saying is that if even in using the data if and when the opportunity comes or or the um the need comes to kind of estimate that that uh it can't be completely dependent upon the the data like if we what i'm trying i guess what i'm trying to say here is that when possible i would really prefer that we are conservative in our estimates and i think i heard you say governor that we are using that approach but i really would want to emphasize that because i i would rather overestimate and then you know have that problem of of not losing as many kids and then the impacts of that on the budget versus underestimating and then having to deal with that as has been the case previously just because we were maybe working with the wrong data set at that time so i'm just i would like to be conservative as as conservative as possible when possible um but it sounds like we're down that path anyway okay um i do see trustee travis hand up i don't know that was from previous or uh it might have been but just use the facts is what i was trying to say thank you so um thank you so in regards to all that um i'm with you all i think it's always best to at the end of the day have you know more money than have to like find more money right because we didn't plan for it um or adjust in that way and i do understand that we're using facts um to project out um and i think you know as i'm sure you do clover right like the facts and what you use and then also the actual right of what happens in the year um you know for as many years as you've been here and then adjust so you know look forward to getting to that magic number where it's the actual number which i don't think any of us here can ever get to but um i agree and like if we're able to even if it's you know a few more than the last year uh projecting now um and then you know with that i you know i have some of the same questions as my peers and i just want to highlight some points including that one um you know in regards to some of these tough questions right like this is not one of those meetings but when we make those tough decisions of consolidating and those things that you know we're looking at the totality of this budget and then you know eventually moving towards hopefully whether it's leasing you know some of our buildings um collaborating with you know having partnerships with organizations that can bring in funds i look forward to you know those those uh exciting conversations you know uh looking at the list that was provided to us you know some of those great ideas that uh many of our community members had you know some of us have had um to continue to make alimorock better with the funds that we have um and be creative and so with that too um just wanted to put in another little seed in this conversation and not to answer tonight but you know i know you mentioned like the energy program and so many others right possibilities that we can move in to to bring in money for the future um and i just want and i know uh once upon a time i had a very small conversation with dr bauer about um you know grant the grant and funds that are out there that we can bring in to alum rock um and being creative and so looking forward to you know possibly getting our district at a point where we're bringing in you know grants that are out there money that is out there um and maybe not directly through our district but through partnerships you know with some of those services that will be provided you know i look forward to um you know checking off some of those lit things on that list that were great right that were needs in our community that were needs by our children needs by our families um and bringing in the funds to being able to support our district um as a whole and so um with that i i know andres i know you're there and so i don't know if you have any questions or comments and i also know that we get to do public comment um so if i don't see any hands up i'm going to go ahead and open it up i just wanted to thank uh cover for a very thorough presentation much appreciate it thank you um and trustee becharano yeah sorry for keeping on saying but i think this is important too that the big picture for me also about tonight's meeting and this budget and the work that we've been doing i think is also um for us to reassure and and to um continue to build confidence with the the community and with our our residents here that this board this district is being responsible and planful and um you know really looking at the long-term well-being of the district because you know there we all know there's been some challenges in past years with regards to budget and bond and i don't need to go down that path but it's important that we have these conversations that we ask these questions that we kind of bring in the points that you just brought in right now um madam president and all these things because the public needs to know that you know i my opinion this district has turned over a new leaf we're doing things in a different way we are fiduciary we do have have demonstrated fiduciary responsibility our audits have demonstrated that and all those things so i i continue to say there's always room for improvement but i just want the public to know in the big picture of things that that what you're seeing tonight and these meetings we've been having should um you know continue hopefully to develop that trust that you have in in the work that's being done acknowledging the mistakes so i think that's for me kind of the big picture of the work that we're doing here thank you trustee um and with that we'll go ahead and turn it over oh wait i see trustee chavez's hand up trustee travis you're on mute trustee thomas okay in looking at the fake mat health risk analysis of august um it also stated that they were asking a lot of questions and it was either a yes or no answer on 19.6 under position control it says do managers and staff responsible for the district human resources payroll and budget function meet regularly to discuss issues to improve processes um should we um should the district be doing so in order to see if they can cut expenses because it seems like the expenses need to be first reduced before before you start doing other cuts in positions is what i would like to see um that's it thank you thank you trustee and just to clarify you said 2020 what's the date on that report everybody got august big mac 2020 august that's correct okay thank you just wanted to clarify okay um with that i'll go ahead and open it up to public comment at this time um unless kovera or dr barry have something else to say before we move on to public comment you know just a reminder madam for president that this is an action item and staff is commenting recommending that the board of trustees approve this item thank you so much um and before we uh go to vote i'm going to open it up for public comments so that we can then move on to voting i think jose's on here who's going to be helping us out is that correct with this portion of our meeting welcome okay welcome um do we have anybody who's wishing to address the board thank you good evening madam president yes we have one speaker our speaker is miss brenda sindejas miss brenda you have two minutes please unmute yourself when you begin speaking the timer will begin good evening trustees i was listening to this interim report and i also looked at it myself and there was a couple numbers that i don't understand for mandated cost reimbursement i think it was eight five five zero on page four um it said um original budget 278 thousand and x amount and then it said operating uh budget fee was 276 000 and x amount and then actual to date was 276 000 i just i didn't understand what that meant maybe there was a typo i think on that page um just wanted to bring that up and then i also wanted to say that um it's scary honestly to see um how much of a deficit we will be in 2020 if we continue to spend or even have any one-time spendings honestly right now um i know that you guys are using the ada from previous years but honestly it's probably going to be a lot lower um i will tell you guys there are a lot of students there right now through zoom remain in this district because they can't but once we go back a lot of these students have moved to texas and other places so um i do agree with a lot of the trustees that we need to be very conservative with this number and maybe exaggerate a little bit and it's better to do that than to project something we don't have and overspend and keep on um staying on a deficit i think the wisest thing for this district to do right now is to really um don't look at 8 000 but look at 2023 maybe at 6 000 and i know that's extreme but it's better as other trustees said to have that left over than to predict something that will just hinder the district financially more thank you thank you jose is that it do we have anybody else at this point we have no more speakers okay thank you so much um and at this point then i'm gonna go ahead and uh come back to the board and um call for the vote and i'll just call your name as i see you on my screen uh trusty chavez no trust hi trusty fam hi vice president quintero hi and myself i thank you so much um thank you was there a motion and a second or did i miss it oh oh no you're right [Applause] uh thank you vice president quintero um second approval okay second by trustee pam um let's go ahead and vote again just to confirm and make sure we follow the thank you uh maribel uh trustee chavez no thank you uh go going on to 301 review and approve the expanded learning opportunity grant plan i'll go ahead and turn over to bauer again thank you board president i'm gonna turn it over to miss andre garcia for this part of the of the item good evening uh board president uh dr superintendent dr bauer and board members and community um sandra garcia and i will be sharing some information this evening on the expanded learning opportunity grant so thank you for the opportunity to share this information with you the the action item is to approve the elo grant for this year before june 1st and so this is what i'm bringing to you this evening a little bit of background very quickly on the expanded learning opportunity grant this is a subsection of the um assembly bill 86 that governor newsom signed in march which allowed schools to return in in person and it provides funding so that districts can support learning recovery programs in their districts and so my charge was to gather input and put together a plan to present to you on um how we will how we propose to use this additional one-time funding so the students that are to be served under this grant are the low-income students english learners foster youth homeless students students with disabilities students at risk of abuse and neglect or exploitation disengaged students and students who are below grade level which are the students that throughout the pandemic we've been asked to prioritize and provide additional services to and so that's the intent of this grant is to serve these students and provide additional support to them there are seven allowable areas under the grant um that we um we can spend the the funding in and i'm just going to give you a brief overview of each of the areas the extended learning time is to provide programs or services that extend the learning opportunities for students these can be done in summer during intersession after school um and again it's it's to try to provide some additional learning time for students the second one is accelerating progress to close learning gaps and in this area we would it would look it would be in the form of extra support for students for example tutoring um small group one-on-one um you know para support that can be pushed in uh and into supporting students or other support providers that can provide this type of support and the idea here is to uh really um intervene and and support those students that um have the biggest gaps in learning um there is i want to note on this part that there is um funding that is tied to this grant that calls for us to support paraprofessional and use them first and teachers as some of the support providers for this area the third area is integrated pupil supports and in this area it's other types of supports that students are needing as we return to in-person instruction for example uh social emotional learning support mental health support school meals the additional costs that it costs to provide meals for students can be added into this area the fourth area is community learning hubs and i compare those to our care pods what we have now at the schools where the intent of these learning hubs is to provide a place where students or and or families have access to devices and connectivity and support so that students can get the help they need to be successful in their classes the fifth area is supports for credits for deficient pupils you know we do have students that in eighth grade even in seventh grade are already showing signs that they may not um meet the promotion criteria to exit our school district and so this grant would allow support in that area so that we could bring kids up to the level of criteria that they would need to promote from eighth grade and then the next area are additional academic services and you know with all of these types of programmings and support you need to have information on students and so this area allows for us to provide opportunities for assessment of students so that we see where they are and keep progress on them and see how much progress they have made in the programs that we offer them so you know things like um assessment tools formative assessments um and progress monitoring type assessments can be um paid out of this this grant under that area and other kinds of supports like programs that would close the learning gap in students maybe for english learners or foundational skills that students may have missed out on during this time at home and then the last one is training for school staff and that could be any kind of training that supports staff to meet kids where they are coming back from um from being at home and being online for so long you know of course we know that there's there's going to be needs that we're going to have to address and um training that's going to be needed so that our staff could meet those needs so it could be anything from trauma-informed practices to um you know restorative circles to suicide prevention or any kind of learning type of support or training that they will need to actually again close the learning gap for students okay so the next um this slide just talks a little bit about what uh the plan requires um and it requires the expenditure plan uh how we involve stakeholders um the identification of students you know how we're going to identify students and how we're going to keep track of their progress um how we are going to share this information out to parents and let them know that these services are available for their children we also need to include the plan for supplemental instruction and support which is the meat of the plan and then coordination with other funding sources so this is additional funding and again it's one-time funding and it ends august of 2022 as you all know during the school closures all the way till now we have had several opportunities for stakeholder input i think we our district has done a great job of really listening to different stakeholders in our community and gathering input from them on the needs that we're going to need you know when our kids come back fully in person and so in addition to all of the the different town hall meetings and other informational meetings and gathering sessions that we had we also had our lcap community forums we had site sessions we had advisory committee sessions and we had specific listening sessions to this grant expanded learning opportunity grant we sent out a panorama survey which gave us great information and then an additional e-log survey that that supports some of the findings um for for this plan um and again you know the methods we use to reach out to parents uh were the the methods we've been using all along you know parent square messages uh messages on the district web page email invitations outreach by our community liaisons and then the stakeholders are are the stakeholders that you see here that we reached out to um in various ways which include our teachers our union representatives our site leaders our middle school students we we met with our aces partners to see what kind of input they could provide to us in terms of what they're seeing in the care pods and our parents and advisory groups so in all of that um this is what we come down to um there was a lot as you know there's lots of information that people provide but when you when you look at all of the information you come down to some trends that you see in in the input and i came i'm going to report on the 10 trends that we saw um in the input from the various sessions um and so the top 10 are are here and these are in order of um how do i want to say this of being repeated um and people mentioning it during our meetings and so the top one was increased counseling services and then second to that was social emotional learning programs um people are very interested in some kind of homework or tutoring center for students learning recovery programs in the summer and very strongly have asked for enrichment programs as well as learning recovery folks feel strongly that enrichment programs are a way to motivate students and to retain them and to keep them interested and engaged in learning and also provide an opportunity for socialization with peers which has been lacking this past year uh school day support for students you know in in terms of working with students in the classroom being provided in a variety of way through paris through um extending opportunities with our after-school providers to help during the school day um and then the eighth is reading intervention trauma-informed practices training needed for all staff and then technology of course was on the list the reason i highlighted those five in yellow is because when we sent out the e-log survey for families to prioritize these areas those came out with the most um the most weighted uh response from parents again increased counseling services homework tutoring centers summer learning recovery enrichment and then school day support were the top five according to the survey that we sent out okay so this is the part that um i'm bringing to you and this is what um you know in in looking at the input and um looking at the different areas that we're allowed to spend uh this this funding on i put together a proposed budget for you to consider for approval tonight and in the budget i broke it down in the seven areas that i spoke to you about and this is what i came up with so funding to extend learning time with summer learning recovery and enrichment programs accelerating progress to close learning gaps by providing site allocation so that every site in our district could have a homework tutoring center available to students that need that centralized tutoring of course we always have the need for learning recovery and tutoring district-wide and then looking at the idea of providing some additional school-based support pushing support to the classrooms prioritizing the lower grades mostly and seeing how far that goes but using some of our somperas and our aces staff to provide that kind of support the the next area is the integrated student supports for um to address barriers to learning and like i said you know the most common theme in all of the input was the need for more counseling support so i added that into this proposal um since it is one-time money you know we could see about providing some additional support in the form of short-term counselor positions and adding funding in there for their meals for students the community learning hubs i thought was an interesting um opportunity for us to continue that support you know i'm sure our kids are still going to be um having access to their laptops um you know sometimes there's a need for the internet connection or um just to have somebody to go to and ask for support with technology or how to use a certain application we could offer parent classes and training through this community learning hub uh and even tutoring so i think it's an interesting option to explore and then the next section uh the support for credit deficient students um is putting some funding aside so that we can support those students those eighth graders and even seventh graders that we see may be on the path to needing that support through after school or saturday academies um in their the specific support would be to raise their grades and um work towards meeting that that create promotion criteria so that they could graduate or promote from eighth grade additional academic services as i spoke of earlier um you know using some diagnostic progress monitoring assessments so that we could keep track of students and know you know where they started where what progress they've been making or aren't making and additional support that they may need and then like i said earlier other literacy support programs um to close the learning gap the last area of this plan is training for school staff and some of the immediate needs that i i believe and we all believe that our staff needs is that trauma-informed practices and that would be for all staff it would be for teachers for you know principals for district office staff for support staff at the schools you know anyone that works with students should should be trained in that area and that's what's written into this plan as well as other types of training that would be useful as we return to in-person instruction so that's my um proposal and um i'll open it up to any questions you may have thank you sandra um and as uh my colleagues here raise your hand um i just want to clarify and this money is for this school year 2021 to use or 2122.
