if someone were to ask me in ninth grade if i regretted coming to oxford my immediate response would have been without a doubt all the experiences we've missed all the late nights doing homework or even making sure that our essays are in mla format however if you were to ask me that same question today my response would be i would do it over in a heartbeat this change only happened within a brief four years but within those four years i've come to realize that we would not be who we are today if we didn't go through what we went through here at oxford and we'd like to justify justify ourselves by saying we'd be on top of our class at any other school but in reality would we have developed the same mindset that we developed here and what we failed to realize is that every single person sitting next to you right now has pushed you has pushed you to become the person you are today by just pushing themselves to do better academically or athletically made you work that much harder this was the competition that helped you be better people like to say that there is power in numbers but oxford is a great example of quality over quantity and we have proven to have the best kids in the district athletically and academically with league titles and numerous sports and a plethora of academic awards granted in the past four years we're the future engineers doctors lawyers musicians dancers and so much more we are the future and although we didn't get the traditional senior year experiences we got through it all we will continue to be that class who went through a whole year and a half of online school and still got a graduation if we can get through struggling at home alone in our isolation because of a pandemic our capabilities are pretty much endless because i know for a fact that this year took a toll on a lot of us but we are here today graduating from oxford in a pandemic in is an accomplishment in itself and we need to acknowledge that so in simple words what i'm trying to tell you guys is that we just be different out here in my sophomore year i tore my acl i remember sitting on the bench next to the vending machines before school started with the brace on my knee and two crutches lying by my side mr taylor walked by and he asked me what had happened and so i told him the news he simply repeated a prayer called the serenity prayer which states god grant me the serenity to accept the things i cannot change the courage to change the things i can and wisdom to know the difference in that situation i could not control what had just happened to me it had already happened i could only control how i reacted to it so that's what i did and now this fall i will be playing division one soccer at long beach state university in life there will always be situations where things will not go your way people will talk about you people won't like you people will pray for your downfall all of the things we cannot change because life is hard but if life was easy if being successful was easy if you had never failed then would you truly understand what it feels like to succeed you can either crumble with the adversity or you can rise above it and one thing i know for sure is that we will all rise above our circumstances because that's what patriots do we rise together now we will watch the class of 2021 memory slideshow followed by ms amber houston's principal [Applause] [Music] message [Music] everybody loves the things you do [Music] everybody here is watching [Music] cause you feel like home you're like a dream come true evening oxford patriots students families teachers and faculty our esteemed guests from district office and the board of trustees welcome to oxford academy's 2021 graduation i am amber houston and i humbly serve as your principal i haven't actually met most of you in person but i'm that crazy principal that sends out the videos and emails social media and such it's pretty wild that this may be your first time meeting you in person but no better time than this wondrous day of jubilation and celebration patriots my sweet seniors your time has come graduation day six years ago you may have felt this day would never come and yet it has time has a funny way of seeming sl so slow and tedious in your youth and so quick as you age enjoy it now and as in life there will be so many experiences that while in them they will discourage you and make you feel like you won't get through it i'm here to tell you that you will life has an ironic way of always moving along and getting you to the other side the bore experience you live this the fact becomes reassuring and hopeful for the sun will always rise each morning our world has survived a pandemic a fact of life that's created fear sadness separation death and despair our students have missed out on these traditional academic and societal milestones and rights of passage the first day of your last day of school homecoming rallies class camaraderie prom but not graduation but perhaps it's the unplanned and unscripted moments on this journey that are the most meaningful and change us more do the authenticity and the realness of the moments i know the last couple years will be once forever ingrained in your hearts forever eventually you'll pass the memoirs of 2020 to your kids and instead of making fun of your dated prom dress and your crazy hair they will have a primary source of world wide pandemic and how cool is that you will tell them about how you created infomercials and psas and articles and videos and and you volunteered your time and your energy to help stop the spread of covid19 you gathered as concerned citizens and you rallied support for blm and anti-asian hate crimes and other societal movements ensuring the safety and preservation of humanity you grew up faster than any generation before and i know you will continue to lead our world with kindness and positivity and make it better you not only excelled in traditional measures of academia but in the five c's collaboration communication critical thinking creativity and kindness one milestone we will enjoy today is graduation for our oxford academy class of 2021 i am so elated to share this celebrate day with all of you although my time at oaha has been short i'm very humble and honored to present each of you with your diploma today and before you do that i hope you'll remember that your last principle maybe wasn't the one here the longest perhaps not the smartest and maybe i even made some mistakes along the way but i always put you first and i always believed in each one of you to close i want to share three little gems of life experience that i may have just learned the hard way number one my former teacher and professor told me just don't take yourself so darn seriously in a global competitive environment there are many people that can do what you can do and there's no trophy for being perfect stop trying to be that way be you be happy be humble a day without laughter is a day wasted number two my best friend showed me to make sure that any person you're talking to you always make them feel like they're the most important person in the room in a world of constant distractions eye contact smiles intention it's magical people will always remember the way you made them feel maybe forget what you said but they'll walk away feeling loved and number three my professional mentor taught me if you are doing your job well your next job will always find you there will be a time when you will look out your window and want more immediately you will think you deserve more or you think you should be further along stop do your job with all your heart your mind and your spirit work hard don't make excuses but have ownership it is okay someone will see you notice you and you will know your authentic self and efforts are valued patriots there are many ways to reach a destination don't be afraid to take that scenic route and enjoy the journey soon enough we will be permitted to start taking off our masks some of us have got quite used to them literally and positive you know possibly figuratively don't forget to smile the smile is universal and transcends language cultures and time make smiling contagious and spread the positivity to all you encounter in this world patriots i'm smiling under this mask that i just took off so that didn't make sense right now but i'm so happy for you all congratulations [Applause] at this time we will begin awarding diplomas to the class of hello my name is joe satar i'm the principal of orange door for elementary school welcome to the warren store for creation station this room was designed to allow students to engage with the engineering design process to learn a simple way to put that is to have our students learn by having fun with all this cool stuff this room was made possible through a grant from the east brunswick education foundation in the course of preparing the room our teachers joined plc's we read books about what it means to be to have a maker lab and to how to use a maker lab and our students have been engaging in some fun activities that we're going to show you so please take a few minutes and enjoy watching the video about the warren starfire creation station [Music] do [Music] do [Music] so [Music] so [Music] five four three two one action good morning my name is sydney and my name high of is and a low of 55 and it is gonna be clear skies uh it's gonna be a beautiful day so get your shorts on and get outside [Music] foreign [Applause] so that's a little bit of of how we're using the maker lab and uh our kids engaging with some of the materials that you see on our on our tables here um of course much more went into the planning of this room um as you can see the furniture in here uh there was uh the the floor was redone all of these cabinets the cabinetry the wood butcher block cables all went through a great process to uh to figure out which materials we wanted to purchase right down to deciding on on how we're going to store all the materials which materials to buy how they'll align with the curriculum that we're using already so uh this was a great effort uh by a lot of people and and i i think uh it really of course couldn't be couldn't have been done at all um if it weren't for the generosity of mr tony yoselov so we really i of course want to welcome him and his family uh his mom and dad are here uh we we spoke a little bit of shop that we uh mr yoselof and i uh worked together on a uh an english project uh with uh middlesex county college uh when i was at the high school so thank you for for that for all those years those were those were wonderful times um and of course our ebef representatives from our ebef uh alan shearer is here from uh nilsek county college and part of the evdef as well um of course uh dr velesky is here thank you sir for for your support of our vision for this room um and uh the kids have been a wonderful asset in trying to figure out how we can use this room getting them in here playing around with things to to make it the best it can be we really only scratch the surface as as we move forward into a traditional year next year this room is going to be really the heart and soul we hope of the of the building of course none of this would would have wouldn't have been able to put all of the planning and and operations of this together without our teachers and really all of the teachers in the school were involved in this we had plc's as i mentioned we read we read books [Music] it's been a large part of what we've done what we were doing it seems like a long time ago because of because of our situation um but that that's been ingrained in our in our in the culture of our of our teaching and or at least our planning and we're hoping that it's going to lead into what we do on a daily basis once we're able to get back full time but really our teachers are represented here today by and i'm going to name you guys because you guys have been wonderful uh anne-marie curtis lisa ruggiero cara johnson michelle riesbord who was our instructional coach last year she was a she was a great helping get in this room together uh andy scanlon is our is a supervisor in the district and a good friend and he and he uh he had a lot to do with putting this room together as well kelly stalling uh uh aaron carroll and monica marrero is our media specialist and special thanks to uh where's joanne joe oh i missed it right here special thanks to joanne yanchak and kelly stalling for helping get this room together uh again for this for this event so thank you thank you all very much uh thanks for being here in just a few minutes you're gonna have a chance to play with all the materials but i'd like to welcome dr moleski [Applause] good morning to everyone to all of our distinguished guests to our students to our teachers our wonderful professional teachers our administrators this is an opportunity that i get in my role in east brunswick to participate in these significant events and this is one of them today um you know i didn't have the opportunity for those of you who don't know in this room mr yourself's teacher mrs shone is uh present here and so we reunite teacher and student once again and so i wasn't here to see the impact first hand that mrs schoen had on mr yusulov but that's evident today it's evident by his generous contribution that made all of this happen and yet once again that impact will pass on to you students for opportunities to explore to create and to experiment and so on behalf of the district thank you very much for not only the relationship you had as teacher and student but now in giving back to our students and giving them the opportunity to envision the world in a different way we thank you so much for that and just i have to acknowledge leslie's husband paul shone and paul is a member of the ebef and handles all the financial dealings and until about two weeks ago i thought paul was actually an employee of the district because paul is in our office all the time well not because of the pandemic but he recently asked to come back into the office and regardless of what's going on in paul's life if he's traveling or anything going on the foundation is always at the at the center of his concern and making sure that the finances of the foundation are in place and that students and teachers get the benefit of grants that the foundation has so kindly offered our teachers throughout the years and exceeding two million dollars now right jack so it's it's a very big number so someone who can speak more eloquently about the foundation no other than the president of ebf mr jack levitt thank you dr volesky all i could say is wow this is something that i have been waiting to do for probably the last 18 months or so we were ready to do this and then all of a sudden we got delayed and this process goes back way beyond 18 months for me this started with a simple phone call i got a phone call from tony yoself one day saying hey i read that warren storefront is having a 50th anniversary i said yeah they are there's a whole big year-long celebration he goes is it okay am i allowed am i allowed remember that part of the question am i allowed to make a donation in honor of their 50th anniversary let me tell you you don't have to be allowed to make a donation to our organization you never ever ever need permission i'm telling everybody you never need permission we will always welcome a donation because anybody who donates money to us it automatically gets turned around and goes right back into the classroom it doesn't stop it just turns around and comes right back to the classroom because teachers like the ones around the room write grants to do very cool things some are smaller things some are humongous things like this but your money turns into all of this so we are incredibly fortunate to have donors who are willing to give us funds to have programs like this so the phrase that takes a village starts with that phone call tony made this phone call and said can i do this i said let me call the principal over at warren store for and see what kinds of things he might want to do with the donation we talked about the numbers and i called mr satari and we talked about the possibilities and he got his team of teachers together and said here's our list and they voted on what they wanted to do and a maker space which is called the creation station came about now to take a classroom and completely turn it into something else is not something you could just snap your fingers and do so we had to rely on dr volesky leading the administration to be able to get this room available to do this and there were a lot of phone calls back and forth and you know the board of education voted on this very enthusiastically excited to see that this is going to happen because this is the first one in the district so everybody was watching to see what a room like this would turn out to be so now we have a donor we have ebef involved we have the teachers we have the principal we have the administration we have the board of ed the whole village of east brunswick has been involved and the last ones to get involved and the most important ones are the students in the classes and you coming in here and showing us how this all works really completes the story and completes the circle for us because we get to see all the hard work that went into this finally pay off so i am very excited about the tour we're about to take but before we do that there's somebody i think you really need to meet because the man who started this whole chain of events is here today and he's going to come up and say a few words to you so let's hear it for tony yoself [Applause] thank you uh jack thank you principal joe thank you to dr uh valeski and thank and thank you all for taking time out of your day today uh to be here for this i'm only going to speak for a couple of minutes um i want to talk about two things you know the first of which is like why i did this right and so i was at warren star for school for seven years and so when i was in the school district and i grew up uh right down the road so less than a mile uh from here and i spent my entire childhood in east brunswick um warren stoffer was a k-6 school and so i was literally the last year of sixth grade at warren stauffer which i think was 1986 not to date myself but and i thought about it i have not spent more than three years at any other school in my life which included high school college law school and business school so i spent more than twice as many years at this school as i ever did anywhere else and i had an amazing uh experience at this school uh in part to many amazing teachers including leslie shown who was my sixth grade teacher and graduated with me up the hammershot i think after uh after we all uh we all left and so i feel very fortunate to have been part of an amazing public school uh district um that really did great things in in my life and i don't think i would have got on to the things that i did later on but for having that amazing uh foundation and so i'm old enough that i remember i think either the 15th or 20th anniversary of warren stauffer and being here but when i heard about the 50th anniversary i actually didn't realize how young this school was when i was here because it was under 10 years old when i started here and so i called up and i did ask uh permission because sometimes you know the rules are a little different with donating to uh public schools but that's where the east brunswick education foundation uh comes in and you know there really are two people in this room to thank in part for this leslie is one and paul is actually the other i made my first donation to the east brunswick education foundation like 20 years ago um and um i did that for a few reasons number one my mother who's here is actually a co-founder of the east brunswick education foundation so i i i knew what they were um because of her um i am one of the original backers of something called donorschoose.org which now um gives 150 million dollars a year to public schools across the united states including the east brunswick high school so i was one of the original people involved with that and then eb ef kind of showed up so i sent them a check and paul rang me up and said can i come to your office and see you uh and to be honest i probably mostly took the meeting because paul was married to leslie but i said sure if you want to come see me come see me and so uh he told me all about the wonderful uh work that uh paul that the the the foundation was doing and i got to know jack a little later on uh as well having run the foundation for a very long time uh at this point um and that's that's where we are and so this was all supposed to happen uh about months ago which seems to me like five years ago with everything that's happened with uh with with um uh covid but i'm super thrilled it's here you know i have children around your guys ages i've got a fourth grader and i've got a sixth grader and an eighth grader uh they do robotics they do a lot of stuff with electronics uh i hadn't seen the spheros before those look very cool uh by the way and so um you know i kind of made it open-ended with whatever the district thought was was best but when a couple of options uh were presented to me this one really spoke to me because i understood the reason for it and so space got built it was february 2020 which again seems like a long time ago and so i i made one last request of the district and and i said would you mind if we name the space after somebody and um after a little while they said sure and who is it and i said you know i can think of nobody better to name this after than both leslie and paul shown so we were originally going to announce this at the [Applause] this was originally going to be announced at the ebef annual dinner in march of 2020 um but obviously we got delayed a little bit but i want to congratulate leslie and paul and um you know thank you guys both for all of your hard work and efforts on behalf of me and the east brunswick schools so thank you okay so thank you everyone and please uh enjoy our maker lab the kids are going to come over and show you how to use some of this material please take a look at our wonderful plaque dedicated to mr and mrs shone have fun everyone you

salutatorian speech [Applause] welcome to the 2021 project and to the family and friends that cannot be here tonight we dedicate one of the most important days of our lives to them in hopes that they will see our lives today i never remember the day that i would see my classmates together for the last time and the day has come after years of knowing their remembrance would move on to me for the rest of my life and the memories we've made together will be under the chemistry will be the sweetest in my memory from the moments we lived together in first grade with teachers like miss yanez and miss walker or to our hard moments of necessity and algebra class but we looked through them together as a class helping each other out there hasn't been a dual or unexcited moment years from now i'll remember your smiles we've been goodbye to the simple routines of coming to school to see our friends speaking to each other in the mornings on the table under the tree i'll remember the laughs and the fights and the nicknames we have never seen to forget the lives we shared together when we sat in history together listening to the story that originated in orange county california or a sketchy mcdonald's with money money and most importantly i'll never forget the day i stepped into this establishment i was only five my child thinking this day would never come i met some of my classmates like 12 years ago and i still seem to remember the children were climbing up those statically and mentally slide and looking at the animals beyond defensive fear we were vulnerable and afraid it's been a long time it's been a long ride i didn't think i'd be here today standing in front of the crowd and speaking on my classmates we have i'm so proud of them i'm so proud of every each one of you for making it here and all your sacrifices will be made today your memories will continue to live on with me even after i think about high school and the years after and it truly is a shame because it would be a hundred times easier to say goodbye to you guys if i was young and it's been an honor to because you're 2021 celebratory thank you and absolutely exceptional job good evening everybody can you hear me okay tonight i'll be presenting the first rose girls versus cameron memorial scholarship um my aunt was an educator here for many many years she started working here in 1962 until she retired i believe was in 2004 and that was a reluctant retirement so she said i need to be more above the school what more thing did you run for the school board so until her death last summer she was a member of the governing board of the health school district and the family figured you know what better tribute to her than to have a memorial scholarship in her name so after discussions with the administration there are so many outstanding this year and i want to congratulate you on graduation but um myself in the administration we are very pleased to present the first annual rose kirschner's cameron memorial scholarship to karen in 2014 once again my aunt rose cameron started a memorial scholarship for my father when he passed away in 2013 the frank curse nurse memorial scholarship i will be continuing that every year and that is also being awarded to their congress here thank you mr kurzwich and congratulations okay dr dooley will come forward to present a few scholarships tonight as well [Applause] thank you mr edlund those of you have been in beautiful downtown ottawa for a few years we have a tradition we've been unable to keep the last few years because of coven typically the given there that evening so they'll take a picture four or five minutes students this is this is a time that educators love because our work is something you don't see overnight my father was a carpenter he could build a house or a cabinet and stand back and look at it and say oh i did a good job for us it takes 17 or 18 years of age before you do that this is a good class not just saying that because your family and friends here but this is a good class there's a lot of personality on the stage there's a lot of good character on this stage there's a lot of potential on this stage um unfortunately in arizona we don't fund schools or students the way i think we should we're one of the lowest paid states in the nation if you have a lot of money you want to help kids out within future years we'd love to have a scholarship in your name or a loved one's name so we can help future classes so yeah that's my soapbox for the night so it's an honor to uh congratulate you people i wish there's a scholarship for everyone in here uh i've known most of you since kindergarten and i won't tell you those stories we don't want to embarrass you but it's been a joy having here parents all right we're ready okay we're calling to order this meeting of the policy subcommittee at uh 6 47 p.m um because we're remote i'm assuming we need to take roll roll attendance just um so uh uh carrie terry spitzer perry present uh debbie debbie present and allison mcdonald present and we have uh dorian joining us to discuss the the proposed um new policy so the only item on our agenda this evening is the policy um to look at um creating a new policy for um vendor selection that recognizes i think it was diversity of the of the proposed vendor so i will um turn it over to doreen to share her thoughts on on sort of what this policy could look like okay thank you for including me in this conversation so i noticed that the school committee has policy acb which talks about the um retention and promotion and on selection of staff diverse staff and as i looked at [Music] the policies that we had we didn't i didn't see anything that included our commitment to ensuring that our vendors are also following those kinds of commitment to the retention promotion and selection of diverse staff so if our district says that we are here to promote equity diversity etc steve is here in the green room oh i'm not oh there he is he's down lower there we go right so if we are saying that as a district we are um looking to promote these things then i would like us to consider having a policy where our contractors or anyone who is doing work with the district that we look at their mission and how um and their commitment to diversifying their staff their commitment maybe they should maybe they have a vision statement as to what their commitment is to diversity where their organization stands when it comes to staffing or having a diverse staff and um i just wanted us to look at our language and expand it to including our contractors i say that because sometimes we contract let's say with um staffing agencies or other places and the staff or the individuals that they send to us do not look like our students so if we're saying we have this commitment we have to go back and say how can we make sure that we are contracting with people who are also sending us diverse staff to interact with our students we have um contractors who let's say come in to do regular maintenance in the building on i don't know um pest control or something what does their staff look like what is their commitment they're interacting with our faculty and our staff and so sometimes they may not interact in a way that we would as a district or would appreciate as a district we want to just you know make sure that in everything that we're doing in everyone that we're allowing or given the opportunity to come and interact with us that there is a commitment with with them yeah can i just add one more thing i just thought no so we it says that um we're looking to have all contracts that we approve be reviewed with the lens of equity and diversity too so um are you and i didn't go look at the um the the model policy handbook from mac i don't know if um stephen or kerry or deb you were you you did that but um so you're thinking that during the it could be um a revision of policy acb to say that it also applies to vendors or or is it an entirely new policy do you think i'm thinking that it's a new policy because one we're looking at our vendors and their commitment right their lens their commitment and we're also looking at the contracts that they're offering or that the district should be reviewing with these vendors and policy acb doesn't include anything like that and to revise that policy i think the policy by itself acb um should stand alone when it comes to our commitment to our staffing and our commitment to diversifying our district and such and then we have the other one when it comes to our commitment to making sure our contractors and anyone that we interact with or who chooses um who we choose to interact with our district also has that commitment i just have a practical question doreen i know if we're working with educational agencies um and staffing agencies they're probably going to have a vision statement or a some sort of commitment statement will vendors like maintenance people and that sort of vendor have that is that something that businesses create um and if not how would you envision us um making a determination right so i think sometimes businesses have an executive summary that they put in their folio as they you know send their information especially llcs or such their article organization might have commitment statements or information that may show that but if they don't then we ask them to write us something so that we have it on file if this is what the vendor has said their commitment to what we are committed to looks like okay okay i need to go back and look at our policies but i know that like just thinking about when i worked for city government there were always policies preferences or maybe not preferences but taking into consideration whether or not a business was woman owned or you know owned by other underrepresented groups in in the um in the business world so do we currently have policies that consider those factors or do they i i guess i'm thinking about this in in terms of the rfp process and our request for proposal and how we would incorporate it and make sure it how it just fits in with what's existing that might might intersect a bit with us i don't know if anybody else has looked i could look at those policies but i haven't never i can just add that usually the rfp policy does not come through the hr department so we really have not had an opportunity to see who is com um who is submitting an rfp on anything that we have and so this would also give the hr department an opportunity to be able to um view these kind of um of written language that people are proposing when they're looking to work with us so i think it's it's important that these things come to hr so that we can look at what's being stated and if the rfp does include it then i need the policy that we write to say something like rfps will also be submitted to the hr department the office of equity diversity etc so that we can also have our lens in choosing and selecting an organization that will come in and work with us debbie um i'm pretty certain that our rfps i think what you're thinking of kerry they do include language about our commitment to equity and diversity um i think rfps are written on an individual basis for each thing that we need so doreen's idea of having a policy that we could refer to in every rfp is a good one because that way we would make sure it's in there and as doreen said it would make sure that the office of diversity and equity would get to have their lens on all of the language that goes out um so i i think that um having even if we are doing it right now i think having a policy that defines it would only make it stronger i'm wondering um stephen i don't and i haven't heard you speak up but um it seems like we're all on board with the idea that we want to create this policy to take to the full committee for consideration um so i'm wondering if our next steps are to do some you know do some of that research of finding other policies or model policy language that we can sort of um build on and then come back to sort of noodle um and work on a draft of a proposed policy there's a we have a policy dj that's purchasing and i don't know if it might be sort of either a dj something after that or a modification to that that purchasing policy um but does that sound like um appropriate next steps that does to me so i hear you on policy dj which is on purchasing and i have not looked at that policy but i'm also looking at the same policy acb which talks about individuals if we're working with staffing agencies i don't know how much they would be included in policy the policy you mentioned right dj so i'm wondering if there's a way that we also have some kind of um addition to policy acb or some some way to have both policies cover the staffing and our purchasing right so yeah so it's two things the contracting of of individual staff as well as vendors for purchasing right yeah thank you for that clarification um carrie i'm just thinking um i work really well when i have like something in front of me that i can look at i'm having a hard time kind of laying out um so i i fully i think we should get the policy examples um as much as they exist already to to start noodling through it um as you said the other thing i'm wondering about is so we so could you walk us through doreen a little bit about who so i'm thinking sorry there's a i'm such a um thinking about do we need for stopping is it the staff all right i just if you could explain the situations in which we see this coming because i'm thinking about that there are like is it bus companies that we're thinking of like with isaac is it this isn't going to work right now i'm sorry um i'm going to try to answer what i think i'm hearing and so we have contracts with staffing agencies that may supply um maybe i i don't want to say i don't know if i'm if i say the positions if that'll be more recognizable for a particular company but we have um specialized positions i'll say that some agencies staff with our district and i would like that i would like to make sure that their commitment to diversity is their one and that they are also hiring diverse staff to work with our students so let's say let's say we're we're contracting out for uh an assistant superintendent we we contract with company abc i want to we need five other assistant superintendents let's say i need to know that they are committed to finding diverse assistant superintendents in their organization and that the people that they're sending to work with our students or with our faculty as assistant superintendents may also reflect the diversity of our staff does that answer your question or make any sense that makes total sense i guess what i'm thinking is is are we also talking about like i know we're contracting out certain maintenance positions and so those i'm thinking of might be more single like owner options right so if i'm a trades person who is only employed you know only work for myself and i don't would that also then apply to such i'm wondering if we might want to consider whether or not you need to be of a certain size or of a certain money like an amount like should we consider having this policy potentially apply at different levels or do we want to have it be across the board because i'm just thinking of the administrative burden of potential i don't know i mean maybe there is no administrative burden here but i'm just trying to think through some of the things that we'd consider and make sure that we um another thought i have is also would we want to consider having you know maybe if you are small instead you could like if you're a single owner you know own your own business and it's just you would we want to maybe consider them going through like some sort of training a documentation that they have had some sort of um i don't i don't know i'm just this is the first time i've thought about it so oh let's go ahead sorry maybe no i was just gonna i was thinking of an example of what kerry's saying [Music] for example and i assume it's still happening but i know it was happening when um sasha was here running the food services program we had local family farms who were providing some of our vegetables so if you're a family farm that is run by you know just truly just a family you may not have you're going to be at a disadvantage if you're absolutely required to have a commitment to diversity if you literally are not hiring other people it's just your family um so i think that that would be something that we could address within the policy it seems to me but that's just an example i thought of we so most of the individuals who apply to work in our district respond to two diversity statements on our school spring platform and i don't see why we wouldn't have our contractors or vendors also respond to some kind of diversity statement because regardless of the size or whether it's family owned they should be able to enter a statement or tell us their commitment even though i'm asking for us to have a policy on it i'm not saying that we're only hiring diverse vendors i'm saying i'd like to see what their commitment is to diversity i understand that some people only have one one person in their organization i can understand that but i want to know where they stand when it comes to diversity and equity yeah i i think um this uh this this meeting this conversation is really helpful for like thinking through all the different possibilities and um teeing up our homework for for the next conversation i think in terms of um looking for other other policies um samples um i believe my employer is working on some similar so and maybe others other folks have because it doesn't necessarily need to be just a school district policy i bet that there's other examples that we can look to beyond you know from from other sources on sort of how how we could how we could write and draft our policy any yeah go ahead i just wanted to say i appreciate the clarification that doreen just gave because you're right doreen we're spending taxpayer dollars and we don't want to spend taxpayer dollars with companies who may not support diversity and equity as you said even if it's a single owned company or a family-owned company we want to make sure that they do support those concepts so i appreciate that clarification thank you yeah agree other any other questions um i guess the next best the next question would be sort of when do we want to come back together with some examples that we can sort of um pull from or or at least start from a draft um there the um and just like thinking of timing the regional school committee's um meeting on the 15th of june [Music] um that's i have to turn off my oven but um i'll finish this thought um the 15th of june and then again on the 29th of june um so uh we don't have to necessarily um i just bring that up in case we want to get a first read um in before the summer break um and if that's important to us to get that done in time um i mean to get that first read done before the summer break so then coming back in the fall we're doing the second read and voting on something at the regional um committees so knowing that what might be a good time to work forward um for um amherst folks um there's going to be another we are going to be scheduling an amherst meeting on the 8th in case that impacts sort of how we're looking at our calendars do we want to come back in a week on the 10th is that enough time it seems to me that would give time to find some samples is the tenth graduation yeah yes it is i was looking at the wrong wrong date do we want to come back on the third which is a week from tonight or do we want to go to another day the um like this that then i i'm not even looking at my calendar honestly sorry um the 17th would be the next thursday other than the 10th yeah is is a week enough time for like between now and next thursday where do we want to look to the 17th debbie i can certainly commit to looking um for existing policies between now and the third i'd be happy to do that and i could send out anything i find in advance so that we could really dig into them and look at them more closely on the third that would be great thank you um do we want to does this time work or do we want to meet earlier um it doesn't i don't have an opinion so pixar later works for me during what works for you oh this time is fine this time okay so 6 45 on thursday the third sounds good all right and so we'll be looking at both um acb as well as uh either an additional policy in that d or the or a modification of d dv i think is what it was okay um i had a question i would love to have doreen at the meeting but the question is if we're gonna be doing drafting do we need to make doreen stick around till 6 45 or could we do a draft and then share it with doreen for her feedback that durian what's your preference that's a great question so i would prefer the way deb said it um whatever is needed yeah i think that that works we'll we'll do we'll um we'll meet just the committee the subcommittee on the third um and then um if we if we need to have another conversation otherwise we'll get your feedback um uh offline perfect great okay great anything more no okay um the i don't think that there will be another policy that we'll need to review on the third um there's a policy that we'll be doing a first read of at the regional school committee next week that um mike and um mark terry drafted modifications so we if we if we want to if there's need coming out of that meeting next week then we we now that will be too late um so maybe we put in we could put in a placeholder to if there's anything that the regional school committee wants to send back to the policy subcommittee that we include that um i think it's cfa that's a yeah and you could even make it more general and just say if um an agenda item for any policies returned for discussion by the regional school committee okay that way if some other topic arises for some reason we'd be able to address it yep okay very good okay anything else okay then i will move to adjourn is there a second second um move by um allison seconded by debbie um uh we'll take a vote carrie carrie eye shannon and dad i'm just reading your name debbie westmoreland i and mcdonald i so we're adjourned thank you

um [Music] good evening everyone it is 5 30 p.m welcome to wednesday may 26th thank you so much for uh being here uh at our school reorganization team meeting uh before we begin uh just friendly reminders uh we know that uh you know this but again just to uh just to always calibrate uh what we are doing um this awesome team of 24 um is uh grappling with dealing with uh sifting through uh trying to make um recommendations uh to the board of education right we've been saying from day one this is not a decision-making body this is an advisory body when that recommendation lands to the board of education they can do like last time and accept the recommendation they can tweak the recommendation or they can go a completely different a completely different way another reminder uh we are 24 super special individuals uh and that and and it goes without saying that all of us can have different ideas and different opinions and different ways of viewing things and so that's something to celebrate um to to honor and it adds it adds more uh to our conversation and ultimately hopefully to our to our recommendation number three it is in no way shape or form uh our expectation that this team has one recommendation at the end of the day after everything has been said and done if that's what happens and it's magical in that way then great perfect not a that's what we will do but if half the team at the end of the day likes a particular model and half the team likes a particular model and those models are different that is okay as well um that that information and that data gets to uh the board of education however it is that we land on that so not trying to force a a consensus if you will right um so now just to kind of bring us up to speed um as you all know uh this committee or this team has narrowed down the scope of model threes to four model threes and has net and has narrowed the scope of model four to two model fours last week we spent the evening looking at listening learning and then having conversation around the possibility of programs moving forward in azusa unified school district it was it was for me at least as a facilitator and as a listener and as a learner it was really really awesome to hear um to hear the conversation uh around around the program so i do um super appreciate that it was it was nice for me to sit on the sidelines and listen to that um as was requested from the team tonight we will be moving on to a budget we're going to begin with budget there are some outstanding requests that have been made by the team and so we hope to suffice that tonight in the realm of budget if you will um and then we're going to move on to staffing as you may recall we had come to the team with a staffing floor or a staffing base a staffing idea it was part of this group's first record set of recommendations uh that we go back to the drawing board and kind of rethink that and we have done that and so tonight our plan is to walk you through that as well um so uh without further ado i would like to turn it over to miss latasha jamal who is going to be walking us through the budget pieces thank you everyone boss before i begin miss fish says she had a quick question that she would like to ask about programs if that's okay or would you like that to be at the end sure go for it um we've been talking about the tk through whatever grade are we gonna be keeping the etk program as well and then also um we talk about having a preschool at every school does that include hodge even though longfellow is right around the corner because i know we don't talk about longfellow yeah so to answer your first one um yes actually in the governor's budget that's not law yet and hasn't been voted and approved yet but in the governor's budget he is proposing uh funding for tk so that it's for all four-year-olds uh we are ahead of ourselves in that respect here in azusa uh we've been doing that for uh quite a bit and so yes we are we are now even more so with the with seeing what the what the governor uh and his ambitions are we definitely are all in for um for uh tk and eventually probably just be called tk we call it etk because we and azusa extend it but if the governor passes it then it just probably tk in terms of preschool that's a good question dana i don't know if you have an answer for that because technically right now you are correct typically or traditionally we have thought about the the the preschool for hajj at longfellow but i'm not sure if you have a response to that or not actually thank you for that question no i do not have a response for that um and i think it's going to uh depend on uh well i think we said we wanted to have a preschool at every uh every school but you're right longfellow is around the corner so i think that's something we have to consider so i appreciate that thought thank you all right miss latasha hi are we ready to talk about budget you know i'm excited guys be excited with me yes okay so first i'm going to share my screen and you have to let me know don't laugh at me jen you have to let me know if it's too small or too are too small never too big um quickly um miss natasha can i i don't think i've been assigned translate as translator oh i'm so sorry that's okay i waited for a second and i didn't hang on thank you you might be having technical difficulties that's why i waited i thought okay i'm sending you off now thank you thank you michelle everyone is this large enough or is it small is that not my full screen no one's talking it looks a little cut off it's great this is mag it looks great yeah all right meg i had it zoomed guess what i was thinking about just joking just joking i'm just cracking jokes today so i want to start off before we get into numbers to talk about measure k cause i know we've had a lot of requests to find out like you know what do we have left what was the goal what was the plan so i'm hoping that i'm going to start off by addressing that then dive into the models as far as how it relates to what would need to be implemented or taken place to make those models successful so first initially as you see here measure k um was thought about to modernize the five remaining school sites that was not addressed in the first bond so that left lee dalton paramount um center in slauson um as we can see here everything at the sites they were supposed to what they were supposed to get was underground utilities hvac roofing fire alarms and interior modernization um based on speaking with the architects as of right now all sites have received underground utilities with the exception of lee they've all received their hvac their roofing and their fire alarms but they all are due for interior modernization okay any questions on that part and i don't want to go too fast and so then i'm going to flip here this is the funding that was allocated for the sites and this goes directly to our audit report so this was auto report as of june 30th so we had 40 million dollars remaining in the bond fund um and what the projects that were remaining was azusa high school and glaston high school track and field which we all know is completed now then we have center modernization dalton modernization paramount and slauson so since we have paused on the modernization that remain for center dalton lee and paramount we have approximately 35 million remaining in the bond fund that can be tied to our school reorganization plan for modernization any questions on this information okay and i can't see the chat so if someone can assist me would be greatly appreciated thank you so now i'm going to switch here so here is model again is it too small because it's tiny for me okay let me make this larger um this better cool okay so i'm going to slide over so we see the numbers but that's model 3.1 so to make model 3.1 let me go sometimes it's important to make model 3.1 successful the first thing we would have to do is rebrand so we would have to rebrand dalton because that would be going to a tk8 which is currently a tk6 and so we're talking just painting adding tk8 versus elementary vice versa approximately fifty thousand dollars additionally for all the tk six we would actually have to purchase the curriculum so that way we'll actually have we have a k five curriculum at this time and we use the sixth grade curriculum that's a secondary this will allow us to buy a sixth grade curriculum that's more in line with our tk5 current model and this uh budget line will be consistent with all of our models because we want to invest in a sixth grade curriculum for our tk6 model yes you do have a question okay margie aviasson has a question yes ms margie hi this um has to do with the previous slides with the modernization it looked like it said it was all interior does that include exterior painting curb appeal making those schools look um modern without the peeling paint and things like that that was not part of the original budget but that can be based on if we reallocate the funds okay and then the other question i had is knowing um the years that these schools were made and the um absolute possibility that there is asbestos in those classrooms is asbestos abatement included in the um for the um upgrading of the classrooms yes so whenever you do modernization you have basic level items that have to be addressed asbestos is one as well as all uh testing that's deal with health and safety as well as making sure everything is up to code okay and then what about um new deaths and things such as that is that come out of a different budget or is that part of modernization as well it depends uh for the funding that was shown that was not included with just interior design but we could again allocate for that okay yeah cause i okay know for a fact that most those uh the furniture is well over 25 years old yeah i think we can all agree that even sites that are showing that they were modernized they all need to be modernized again so i think we can all agree that no matter how we i'm take bosses slice or dice it we still need to touch on touch some love on all of our campuses okay thank you okay you're welcome all right and so now going over to foothill the only thing besides if we're trying to beautify but we're just saying the basic things that would have to be done at this point foothills kitchen would have to be modernized um we would need to increase the square footage so it can serve all the students so that's approximately a hundred thousand dollars um going down to the new high school model um one again we would have to rebrand this would be a little more because we have to paint choosing the logo um so that's why it's more than the rebranding from the tk8 from a tk6 um we would have to recode the gym floor again because the logo upgraded new turf overlay again depending what the logo school colors athletic equipment again coin assigned it with the new logo school colors and whatever we decide for that new school um we have to modernize the kitchen um so it can be equipped have more food lines um invest in the size of the kitchen and as well as a locker room upgrade so right now just for those items for model 3.1 we're looking at approximately 2.5 million dollars for this modernization understanding we have 35 million currently in the bond and i want to add that all of the all the prices that we receive from the architect we added a 0.8 influx because of all the price of lumber and everything that's going up right now eight percent some additional considerations would be if we wanted to add rooms for example at the new high school for the specialty programs we talked about last week maybe they might need a little more labs or a little more space but we will we could propose that you can add three rooms for 1.7 million as well as for any site if we thought we needed more parking we can add 30 spaces on any campus for three hundred thousand dollars [Music] any questions on model 3.1 mr jamal you have a question from miss avison okay um as far as foothill middle school goes i um will there be locker room upgrades there because if it's a seventh and eighth with a thousand students they don't have the locker room capacity for that um no and then the reason behind that is all of the schools that were built unless something is wrong and i will have to double check this but all the schools were built with a locker capacity based off their current capacity so as it stands right now they should have enough locker rooms for that mr tasha you also have another question in the chat from miss sanchez it reads the schools that did complete modernization was nearly 20 years ago so that would mean all those goals will soon be outdated compared to the schools that have updated hvac roofing underground etc yes ma'am completely agree with you and you also have a question from meg then miss fish okay at the estimates and it says um for the high school modernize the kitchen and then it says and then it has an estimate of 400 000 but on the last line it says 200 000.

um we also also want to make mention that on our website we have posted that the public can make suggestions regarding something referred to as the safe reopening of school that's a mandate from the department of education so i'm in the process of writing up a report which is referred to as safe opening of schools in september but they're asking for community input so if you would like to make some suggestions regarding returning to school in september you can go to the website click on the link and make a statement about some of your suggestions i want to make mention that this past saturday we dedicated the batting cage to in memory of ben ludera a former teacher and a baseball coach who unfortunately passed away last march due to covid uh it was a great day and i want to thank the cpa pizza park education association for their efforts in fundraising and putting saturday's event together i also want to thank our supervisor of guidance elise casano for putting together last night's scholarship awards academic awards uh we had on the field last night great weather great night um a lot of great students received um scholarships for the workforce or for uh community or four-year colleges i do want to make mention that graduation right now is scheduled for monday june 21st a three o'clock graduation for the eighth grade a six o'clock graduation for high school on the same day we just received information late yesterday that there is a strong possibility that the governor will allow an open graduation which means no specific number of uh spectators we were planning on having just parents attend with their children uh as they did this year uh sorry last year but with this new uh guidelines that are coming out there is a possibility and i'll be speaking to the board about it and mr pinto mr bagner about having spectators at the graduation since the governor has um said effective june 4th uh this will go into effect uh last week of school for elementary students uh half days june 14th to june 21st uh middle school and high school schedules will stay the same uh a letter has either gone out or will go out to parents regarding that last week of june which is uh usually half days for staff uh for students and staff i should say just a reminder that this summer we are running a number of summer programs um summer programs for students who are in need of credits uh some are programmed for students who are um categorized as learning loss due to the pandemic and we're also running a summoner enrichment program for three weeks in august all of these things are posted on our website and if a particular student has been recommended for summer school parents have already been notified about that summer school begins june 8th and runs for four weeks and then our enrichment program uh runs for three weeks in august uh just a reminder we originally on the calendar had set june 1st as a half day due to the primary election but we found out later in the school year that the primary election is actually june 8th so i did send a notice out to parents that june 8th will now be a half day all remote for students so there will be no students attending school on june 8th due to the primary election uh staff will be in and will be teaching virtually as they did when we had a snow day this past winter okay um any questions from the board at this point before i go to the consent agenda any questions or comments from the public so do you think members of the board of education i'm very honored to be here with my friends to present our memoirs for things to avoid while here i also want to thank mr pinto particularly for recognizing the students talent and for trusting us and mr adler with the school's reputation he doesn't always get the credit he deserves for allowing us a chance to succeed in ways that other people wouldn't have we are great we are so grateful to each of you who have in your own ways this film the class of program 19 has it has been a journey of self-discovery as well as self we're here today to offer you what gives for candidates spreading this book can help it become an integral part of the preset part compared between uniting us together and reminding us how strong we are during one of modern street's greatest tribulations as the days behind our wall started bleeding into each other and nothing for value anymore a lot of students teachers and members of our own community fell into an abyss of loneliness heartbreak depression lack of motivation and even humor our beautiful and raw experiences are all explored within these within these memoirs while each story discloses a unique perspective of 1419 mental health struggles family situations or even other aspects of the warranty i'm going to show you a little bit of my experience for me and i feel like for most of my fellow friends as well the book sparked reason and purpose a reason to get up and get dressed in the morning a reason to check my emails a reason to talk to friends about their situations well combined to the four corners of my room i would count the minutes left until i would until i was able to close my computer and call back to bed after reaching out to mr adler and being and getting a part in the book and working with him on my memoir i didn't even i didn't even realize but i stopped counting those minutes being able to talk and open up to mr adler about what the past months have been like was a breakthrough that myself and many other authors were in need of writing and discussing the book with friends family and mentors was a form of therapy and self-exploration that we will always be great as a result of writing this book we have been recognized by news outlets nationally and more importantly locally realizing that our voices are being heard and people are actually listening has been an experience that will carry us for a lifetime this is who we are but more than that we are what this town can be mr other says that people will listen into me we have made them we we want to invite you to help us continue to make them talk with mr admiral plan the next book now we would also like to invite you to purchase copies of the book for the schools in the district and throughout the state put hard copies into school in the high school and middle schools and spread the word of our stories with your colleagues and friends in other towns we also want to offer you this poster which is in the back of the room um so so so that our collection may be recognized involved in public spaces in town including the live the library your offices in this very room with gratitude with uh with appreciation with thanks and we hope that you continue supporting projects like this at cliffside park high school we offer you these gifts thank you thank you very much you should buy one i did buy one amazon.com i just want to thank mr adler uh for the work he's done with our students i know from the very beginning when mr pinto made me aware of what the students were uh doing as far as writing this book um it sounded like a great idea but little did we know that it was going to blow up the way it did i know you've gotten a lot of press on cnn nbc um and even when i have my county superintendents meetings a lot of people have recognized the fact that they are aware of the book the kids did a great job i know the first time i became aware of mr adler uh having his students write is one morning i opened up my email and i had about 30 emails from students in his class and i guess the idea of the project correctly if i'm wrong was for them to um write their reasons as to why certain things in the high school should be changed or suggestions in terms of making changes and uh i took the time to answer those 30 emails and respond to each of those students so they had a response from me knowing that uh we did care about what they had to say and uh little did i know from that day when mr allen was working with the students that would come to such a great book like this so mr adler i thank you i thank all the students in your class i know during the typical times that uh this book has made an impression on not just cliffside park but as was said throughout the nation internationally so keep up the good work we hope to see more thank you very much if they can this way they can see it if not it's okay sure all right thank you thank you okay anyone else any questions or comments if not then i would like to look at the consent agenda frank do you know if anybody no i'd like to refer to the consent agenda the board has copies in their folders as i do each week or each month i'm just going to highlight some important items on the agenda if there is an item on the agenda that anyone has a question about uh just feel free and i will give a better explanation as to why we do have a resolution uh on page two um we haven't done this in a while but we are approving some professional development for staff members some the majority of it is virtual you'll notice that a number of staff members are taking classes for advanced placement as they do each year usually in person unfortunately right now it's still virtual but hopefully more and more staff members will have an opportunity when we come back in september to uh take part in professional development in person um the first resolution i have is resolution recommended by the superintendent of schools to appoint barbara braco as principal of school number three at a contracted salary of 127.3 effective july 1st 2021 for the 2021-22 school year so i just want to make mention obviously congratulations barbara i will send a letter out tonight to the district congratulating barbara but i know that i've had the pleasure of working with barbara for many years uh when she was a pre-k teacher most recently as a supervisor and in any job that barbara's had uh she's always been a great asset to the district and barbara i know you'll continue to to be that especially at school number three so congratulations uh resolution recommended by superintendent to accept the retirement of stella bianchi special ed resource room teacher at the high school uh stella came to see me last week stella's been with us for over 35 years um started out i believe it's school four as a resource room teacher uh i'm sorry school five as a resourceful teacher may have spent some time at four but uh most recently many of her years were spent at the high school has done a wonderful job with us with our special education program so i wish uh stella the best uh the next resolution is to appoint catherine piccola as a speech consultant this summer for our summer program top of page three as you know we have openings for high school guidance secretary high school main office secretary due to retirements uh first resolution is appointing a net scalar as full-time 12-month secretary assigned to high school guidance uh next resolution is to appoint cynthia mourinho as a full-time 12-month secretary assigned to the high school effective july 1st and a resolution to transfer jenny d has who is a currently a part-time secretary in the athletic department to full-time secretary in the athletic department so jenny will start that full-time position july 1st uh we're accepting a leave new jersey family leave from camilla tofano uh maternity leave a little bit further down the page we're approving an unpaid leave for donna murtagh secretary of school six on page four we're appointing for our summer program uh all of our teacher aides we're going to be working with our special education to um students this summer uh primarily at school six and school 5 in our pre-k handicap program so those people who are listed on this paper work in those programs during the school year and they'll be continuing on during the summer and we're accepting tonight i know i had sent you um i emailed you a copy of the board self-evaluation a couple of weeks ago i gave you a hard copy last week so we're accepting the board of education self-evaluation for the 2021 school year and we're also um approving the revised school vehicle assignment policy which is policy number 7650 which will go into effect effective tonight after we approve the agenda and as i mentioned before um early dismissal for students pre-k through six for the week of june 4th through june 21st mr fano anything in finance it's a couple items from gina um obviously working on our end of the year for the 2021 school year we have one major project going many projects going on this summer we have one major project that i think everyone is pretty jazzed about that's uh the gym upgrade project that we've uh we met on today in regard to uh replacing the gym floor at the high school all the windows and a new hvac system so we're pretty excited about that we expect that to be done by the end of the summer and we're opening up our 21-22 school year in the coming days also that's pretty much it on the finance side did you want to make mention about the apr yes the apr the american rescue plan just received arp american rescue plan which essentially received some guidance on about two days ago it looks like cliffside park is going to get an allocation of approximately 4.5 million dollars we don't have all the specs yet in regard to the allowable uses but directionally as mr roman gino mentioned the safe return plan is due on june 24th of this year and the application and the budget itself is due november 24th uh 2021.

it comes um and just really wanting to recognize that entire class for how resilient they've been our teachers our staff members everyone this whole year has just have to overcome so many obstacles and they did it and the fact too with our district i just want to thank administration specifically mr dean i know you are working very hard with state farm stadium there's so many high schools and so many students who didn't get to experience half the things that our students did the ceremony wasn't quite the same and dysart really pushed hard to make sure that this year was as close to normal as possible and it took a lot of effort from a lot of fine people to make that happen so thank you all everyone who's involved in that and again congratulations to the class of 2021. okay um just wanted to also echo you know what everyone else is saying uh congratulations to the class of 2021.

there dr thomas thank you i've been doing this so long you think i would never ever be on mute first of all um i am just so thrilled once again um you board members should never give us the opportunity a principal to talk about their students because we can do this for a long time we are so proud of the hard work that our kids do and they're just amazing we have two students that are from broadview that are just so deserving of this award our first one is issa and assad um i always say when you think of issa there's four things that come to mind astute passionate innovative and a natural leader issa maintains an impressive academic record throughout broadview of all the three years she's been in there in addition to her academic success is the student who is known for her dedication to the broadview community if there is an organization that anyone can be involved in you can always see issa's name she's part she's the president of the national junior honor society she's an active member in the broadview leadership council and the student council roots and shoots and the math team and i'm sure that there's more that i missed issa is always pushing herself to try new things and extend her learning but she's always giving back sel just selfishly to the broadview community i can't think of a more deserving student to win the superintendent award so issa are you there i think i saw you hi hey congratulations i'm very proud of you thank you so much you want to say anything because you know hey let's milk this moment because i've been given this opportunity i'd just like to thank you so much for giving this award i'd like to thank all my amazing teachers my awesome counselor she really helped me go through this and my friends and family without them i don't think i would have been able to do any of this they were really supportive okay thank you so much isa tell your parents we said hello and um and you can see why issa has this award our next one is is another incredible student andre elardi um when i think about andre the words that pop up is ambition compassion reliable and humble these are the words that come to mind he has earned a distinction of ready for this high honors not just honors high honors every marking period that he has been at broadview everyone so andre is a student who can be relied upon if you need something you just have to ask andre it's going to not just be completed to be done excellent he is such a role model in the classroom as well as outside the classroom andre understands the importance of being a well-rounded student after along with his high performance um academically he does a lot of extracurricular things at broadview as well he's involved in the unified sports he is also on the national junior honor society once again he does peer tutoring these are students that are eighth graders that tutor um their peers and help them out he's on um in the communities in basketball tennis and chess club andre stands out as a leader um just because he's always helping others and he's constantly going above and beyond his academic and um extra curricular but what we love about andre is he's probably one of the most humble students you've ever met his humility is just a rare trait and he has the maturity i say he has a soul of the 35 year old so every award he gets he definitely deserves so congratulations andre i think i saw you andre i'm mutant say hi to us hi guys and you know you're gonna have to say i told you we're milking this moment we're milking it give us like a just a couple of sentences okay uh i'm really honored to receive this award and it means a lot to me and i also want to thank all the teachers and staff members administrators at broadview who've helped me through like work but also just through having a good time at broadview and uh this award is because of them well we thank you remember these two names you're gonna see them again i guarantee you thank you thank you dr thomas um rogers park thank you doctor i'm here thank you for celebrating these amazing young people tonight it is an honor to be with you to present the superintendent's award to rogers park students this evening with so many remarkable students it's never really an easy decision to choose to whom the award is given and in considering the criteria of community service and service to others academic prowess relate relative to their ability and leadership services the school community we've chosen alani d jesus and alexis johnson over the past few years lexus has worked hard to get can't wait to work with other students in high school and possibly with the board of education if i'm able to contribute in any way thank you and we'll blame dr thomas for that because uh she got all the students to get the speeches going and uh so we're very proud and as dr thomas said you know you can expect to see great things from these students in the future as well i i just want to give a can you explain what that means i'm so sorry thank you so the the first column l which is here is the quantity but when it comes to the kitchen is the square foot so we need 200 square foot for middle school 500 square foot for high school and then this is the price per either quantity or price per square foot so here the going square price per square foot is 400 per square foot and then we multiply that by the number of square footage okay thank you i'm sorry i should explain that i'm sorry miss fish yes uh you're saying you need to add sixth grade curriculum because we're going to be changing to tk sixes but we changed to tk sixes this year already so were those not updated already so it's not that it was an update but we didn't we do not have a sixth grade curriculum that's in line with the tk5 model so this will have allow us to have a curriculum that's in the same alignment of a tk5 model so it'll be a sixth grade curriculum for that okay thank you miss aetna uh how did you come up with the number of three new cl three new classrooms if we get all the transfer students from one high school to the next we would need more than three lab classrooms well and again this is just a recommendation if we wanted to add more classrooms because right now we're not certain that we would need them for the specialty but if we if that was the desire of the group i just wanted to show the price of what it would be to add up three classrooms so that's why i said additional consideration so if we wanted to add them so we could add six we could add more but i'm just showing the price breakdown of adding three okay any other questions i don't see any of the questions in the chat right now thank you mr jorge okay we're going to go to mar model 3.3 and you're going to start seeing the consistency so here model um 3.3 uh ellington will remain a tk8 so there will be no rebranding but we still would have the cost for the curriculum um same for the um middle school upgrading the cafeteria so that we could um have all the kiddos eat that would be 250 square foot so still a hundred thousand and for the new high school is the exact same that remains consistent it'll be a 1.8 million dollars for the itemized items the itemized list that we have here so this for model 3.3 is 2.4 and i still have the same um considerations so the only difference between model 3.1 and 3.3 is the sixth grade curriculum i'm i mean is the uh rebranding of dalton yes miss aetna i'm sorry i don't have oh no problem miss jamal you have a question uh from miss jones are those classrooms um is it bungalows um for the ones that we're adding at the bottom for additional consideration yes and so i put in here the new ellington so have you ever been to ellington in that new wing that's what it would look like how they have three classrooms but it still looks like a full building any other questions on 3.3 uh mr mom miss savella has a question yes ma'am so you said that we took off the 50 000 for the branding but i'm looking at the projected potential budget and this one's two and a half million also was the other one 25 40 and i just wrote it down wrong yes ma'am 2.5 41.

um just want to thank the the students for persevering um all of our staff for for all of their hard work and also the parents that were you know sitting behind all of those students all year long helping them uh with persevering through it so um also it was just an honor to be involved in their in the graduation ceremony something that we um really take for granted and especially last year um not having that so thank you to everyone that's made that happen and that's it next we have a motion to approve the consent agenda items and i will make a motion to pres to approve the consent agenda items as presented seconded by miss pritchard motion passes next moving on to information information item number one information on social worker program dr croto thank you madam president this evening dr dean will introduce this item good evening madam president members of the governing board and members of cabinet this evening we provide information to the governing board on our annual or our annual information item on our social worker program um our director of student services karen winterstein is here to provide that information just a reminder to the governing board that our social workers are not therapists they do not function in that role um nor do we allow them to function in that role so ms winterstein will provide an update on the social worker program good evening madam president governing board members dr proto cabinet and audience it is my pleasure to speak with you regarding our social worker update just to give a little bit of history we had a committee begin looking at the possibility of introducing social workers to dysart back in 2018 and in september of that year the governing board approved to move forward with the pilot program that pilot program consisted of five social workers uh four at a k-8 setting and one at a high school and which expanded or which began in january of 19 in that next school year we move forward as a district to put social workers in each one of our schools our social workers follow the ade approved castle sel framework which is the collaborative for academic social emotional learning there are five core competencies uh that include self-awareness which is the ability to understand your own emotions thoughts and values along with your strengths and limitations and how they influence your behaviors the second core is self-management and that's the ability to manage your emotions thoughts and behaviors effectively in different situations and to achieve your goals and and what your immediate wants are the social awareness component is the ability to understand the perspectives of and empathize with others including those from diverse backgrounds cultures and in different contexts such as the classroom playground the bus or hallways relationship skills is the fourth one which is the ability to establish and maintain healthy and supportive relationships and to effectively navigate settings with diverse individuals and groups responsible decision making is that final core which is the ability to make caring and constructive choices about personal behavior and social interactions across diverse situations to give you an example of what these competencies look like in action i think of a ninth grader experiencing a high school set in an open lunch on the first day of school what they've just experienced is three separate and confusing classes and they're trying to absorb something called a syllabus they are trying to understand and manage their thoughts and emotions as they walk out into the loud courtyard and try to text their friends to meet them up for lunch then they have to navigate the lunch area with people who they've never seen before who possibly act and look differently than they do while someone comes up and surprisingly asks if they were the person in the tick tock video that they saw that morning finally they try to hold it together and find a safe spot to sit for a while as they eat a granola bar without finding their friends that's applying the sel skills that they've learned in middle school and elementary school as a principal i always made it a point to go and observe my kindergarten playground because i knew exactly uh within just a few minutes which kiddos needed support in certain areas and that's really what scl is about is to help the students be successful in whatever context they are in a school setting and all five of those core competencies help layer that that by learning and applying those skills in various contexts within a school setting and these competencies are directly tied to our character program and pbis positive behavior interventions and support that are in all of our schools so supporting students staff and families is the primary goal for our social workers as dr dean said we don't provide any therapy or or clinical support but it's truly in helping students be successful in what they need um primarily uh to succeed academically how the um sel information and and skills are learned and applied um are by whole group lessons that are provided by the social worker in conjunction with a classroom teacher ultimately what our goal is is that those sel skills are woven into what the students are doing every day in in in the classroom in athletics in our arts classrooms because truly it's whether managing and identifying understanding and managing their own thoughts and feelings interactions with others in a social setting building those relationships and then making responsible decisions our social workers also support students with small group skill based lessons such as grief anger management anxiety especially this past year problem solving goal setting time management anything that might be identified either in their interaction or primarily with a teacher recommendation they also provide individual support and check-ins it could be after a support plan or as part of goal setting uh threat is they're also members of our threat assessment team multi-tiered systems of support which is our rti process part of the behavior team also our crisis response when when something is happening on a campus or a school-wide crisis situation they also arrange cfts meetings for our child family teams re-entry plans there's food pantry systems at many of our schools for families in need they provide resources and they also provide staff training in a variety of ways primarily not primarily but as a big support this year was really classroom management and how to support behaviors within the the school setting so the plans for the coming year is to assist with the staff training so that the staff truly understands those five core competencies and how they can naturally integrate us we are doing some work this summer with our ela content and identifying ways in which um the stories and the the lessons that they're they're already teaching those uh lessons can be naturally integrated into conversations that are already happening within the the instruction uh and then making those purposeful connections within our three a's because when you think about performing arts or athletic teams all five of those competencies are really important to be successful whether it's academics arts or athletics or as dr dean would say athletics first but um and then building relationships within the community whether it's socially within their friend group or within their grade level or within the bigger context of a school setting and then ultimately it's really supporting students for their success academically because that's why we're here as educators the social piece is just an important part of that and with that i'll stand for any questions and if there are no questions madam president we'd be happy to go to the next item actually i just wanted to tell her real quick um miss winterstein thank you uh for actually providing that analogy at the beginning of your your presentation i think it just hit spot on because um i know when you when you go from eighth grade into that big setting high school uh you were the big man on campus now you're the little tadpole in the pond again and it it can be a little overwhelming so but i like the analogy that you use so thank you just a quick question um well i think it's quick you mentioned children that may be going through grief and maybe a teacher or maybe the social worker is identifying that so they're getting like a referral um is it also possible for a family to initiate that referral absolutely a mad absent absolutely in fact um our social workers have created some amazing bonds unfortunately we had several parents um die of covert this year and uh the support that they were able to provide the family because oftentimes i'll never forget a dicer high student and she was at school she's her mom went in the hospital and she died two days later it came on so quickly her aunt um was there to she was she was the only daughter so she didn't have any parents so her aunt scooped her up and so that family needed a whole bunch of support right and she's just one of many but absolutely they they are instrumental in making sure that the family have the resources that they're connected with community resources not that this our social worker can provide grief support to the families but they definitely have a wealth of information as far as resources for them wonderful thank you absolutely good thank you all right next we're moving on to information item g2 dr croto thank you madam president uh for this item our discipline overview dr dean will also introduce this item thank you dr croto madam president members of the governing board members of cabinet this evening we are happy to present to the governing board a disciplined overview of the 20th 2020 2021 school year it is difficult to say miss richard it's tongue tying um i i i will tell you that ahead of time that this information is going to look a bit different um in the fact that the 2020 2021 school year was quite different compared to previous school years and so our director of student services karen wenterstein will also present this information to the governing board good evening madam president governing board members dr croto cabinet and audience members as dr dean explained we haven't had a regular school year for a few years last year was cut short in the fourth quarter and this year was uh very unique in that we started virtually and we didn't have our full in-person attendance as we usually do so for the benefit of just a refresher i'm gonna actually go back because i i usually share our discipline data every year i was not able to do that last year so in order to gain a perspective i'm going to start with a 2018-19 overview because that was our full for our last full year um of data and so two years ago i was up here and we were celebrating um these decreases in the amount of refer the percentage of referral decreases uh we were able to decrease our bullying by 20 by 27 defiance and disrespect which is our largest number of referrals by 14 verbal abuse profanity 24 endangerment 41 dangerous instruments 32 and threatening intimidating behavior that those are combined behaviors by 35 so we were really we really were focusing on that respect and responsibility in that last year the downside of 1819 that's when we really saw a huge spike and this was nationwide we saw a 216 percent increase in drug tobacco paraphernalia that is the vape alone uh 179 increase in drug use possession that was with the vapes that had the thc cartridge typically we had very few actual physical drugs they were almost predominantly in the vapes and then a 288 increase in tobacco use and those would be the tobacco vapes so we definitely had a huge area of growth in but again we were not um atypical from what was happening staten nationwide so last year it wasn't the typical year so what i did as far as the data is i took last year's comparison because we had completed three quarters and did 75 at comparison of with the the previous full year so we were pretty much even on just about everything um the the celebrations were not very many we had uh disruptions were down 15 threats we were down 23 that was big the drug tobacco paraphernalia only was down 21 this year it's very difficult to compare because as i said we didn't have full enrollment we had we've varied anywhere once we opened on september 14th or 21st we anywhere between 70 65 to 80 in person uh while the rest were we're learning virtually we saw a huge decrease but many other factors play into this we were socially distant we were we had our masks on behavior was very much different than a typical classroom so i hesitate celebrating these too much because i really want to see a full year of course these any time we can decrease referrals that's that's that's a great thing but i i just don't want to put all of our eggs in in the one basket if you understand so you can see by some of these numbers um pretty drastic decreases but again it's not your typical year but 51 decrease in assault i'm not going to read them all but fighting 43 which is a huge um interaction physical aggression so you'll see the more physical ones the assault um the the fighting the physical aggression threatening intimidation uh verbal abuse profanity in red we we did see at the end of last year an uptick in vaping again um and which is definitely on our radar to hit strong uh when we open the school year next year um harassment was also up 15 um and it was typically in that the last uh quarter maybe february we saw an uptick in that and i don't know if the kids were really struggling but it was more of that mean behavior and really saying some things that um were absolutely not appropriate and and met the definition of harassment so again those two areas will continue to be our area of focus long-term suspensions in 1819 we realized that we need our kids in in class so we re-looked at our processes and we asked our administrators to really be more reflective with our students that included and restorative that restorative piece included when the students returned from uh suspension uh they would be do a check-in with either an interventionist a high school counselor or an admin at the k setting to really set the student up for success yes they served a consequence but just like with anyone okay you made a mistake now what are you going to do to change that behavior so we really focused on that piece and we saw a drastic drop in last year now remember last year in 1920 it was only three-fourths of the year but as you can tell in the first three quarters to only have seven compared to 38 the year before i take that as a success and then this year again different circumstances we had two we have i have the three we have a long-term suspension um next tuesday on june 1st um so i've included that because that is a recommendation it has not yet been been formalized but i wanted to be forthright in saying there are actually three recommendations so with that i stand for any questions i'll go ahead and start thank you very much miss winterstein two things that i would like to ask you about one of them attending the cips that some of the schools well some of the schools reflected in their cips that they had noticed themselves decreases in office referrals um do you feel that a lot of it may have been because of like pbis or just i mean because a lot of these percentages and areas uh difficult to compare your slide on number five um you know those are a those are decreases but would you say pbis was a strong thing that helped with the office referrals being down madam president member sorry st pal i do think pbis played a part we currently have eight schools implementing pbis and four are are starting the the training next year so um i i've spoke with several principals at pbis schools that have there that are in their second third fourth year of implementation um and their referrals did go down uh one over fifty percent again um i would just rather have a full year so i know that the pbis practices are definitely working and that the teachers are having common terminology and students are having they know the expectations wherever they are on the campus so those those aspects of pbis are definitely in place and effective um but again we are going to continue our efforts in in full implementation and we look forward to seeing what a full year of data looks like next and i know that's kind of a difficult question to ask but because we didn't have the normal year that we've had but there were several schools that had noticed a great change in not so many referrals and stuff and my second part had to do with the vaping and of course not only dysart but all different school districts across our nation are having issues with students vaping are there any new programs out there that we may try to grab a hold of in order to get these numbers back down madam president member sorry zeke bell there are a few online and we do use a few online courses as part of our diversion to help those students understand the the dangers of vaping we also are doing not necessarily the road shows but we are definitely doing lots of education next year that continued education uh what was interesting this year is we found that students have a much broader access to devices and drugs and and drug paraphernalia at their home and outside in the community so it's it's a tough battle um i know when i was up here two years ago talking about our vaping road shows we were really targeting on the the smoke shops and that type of access that is still a concern but our students have a much broader access um within that is within reach um outside of school so we're still doing the road shows right we did not do them this year okay because of the year yes but yes um we have uh talked with doing uh in-person education absolutely whether it be a whole group like our road shows again or um in a smaller group setting that has yet to be determined okay because i i would really like for us to really ramp it up especially after the year that we've just had so right thank you can i just ask really quick is dysart high school still our only high school that utilizes pbis or do we have uh sundown also utilizes pbis are there any plans to get our other high schools on board with that especially if we're going to be really implementing them in the k-8 or the middle schools then when they transition to high school it's going to be a program they're already familiar with yes we are gradually doing that um as we have cohorts uh like this year uh we have another co we have a cohort starting it's a three year uh training process and so the following year we plan to put additional schools in the co in a different cohort okay thank you any other questions okay thank you very much next we have item h1 dr croto thank you madam president members of the board cabinet and guests tonight we bring to you a series of three recommendations for new administrators in our district so we'd like to celebrate that we're going to start by our recommendation to approve miss sunny atmosphere for many years and i can't think of a more dedicated person to continue leading leading the charge at dysart and with that i would like to go and make the motion to governing board to approve the appointment of sonny rush as principal for dysart high school second motion passes congratulations congratulations sonny and welcome aboard next we have item h2 dr croto thank you madam for next year moyes has received a master's degree in educational leadership from arizona state university he has seven years of experience as a middle school and high school teacher as well as two the appointment of moises centeno as high school assistant principal seconded by ms grant motion passes congratulations mr centeno welcome aboard next we have item h3 dr croto thank you madam president members of the board cabinet and guests we continue on with our third recommendation this evening for a new assistant principal at mountain view elementary and we are proud to recommend sarah sarter for that position as assistant principal sarah received a master's degree in curriculum and instruction from grand canyon university she has six years of experience as an elementary school teacher and two years as a teaching and learning experience with the dysart district so she is also here uh this evening so after you vote we can welcome sarah board you know sarah you will enjoy working with gail miller out there i know you will she's right oh she's right beside you oops with that i'll motion to approve the appointment of sarah sarter as elementary assistant principal second motion passes congratulations congratulations sarah welcome next we have item h4 dr croto thank you madam president um tonight we bring to you a motion to approve travel and contra conference registration and reimbursement travel fees for individual board members to attend training and conferences that include the arizona school boards association or national school boards and other events and with that miss brown will kind of take you through this and answer any questions okay um the budget um hasn't actually changed i know the past two years budget amounts haven't been used to their full extent so every year every board member gets four thousand dollars allocated for travel and for conferences the remainder of the previous year's budget is going to roll over so i just i gave to you earlier what your rollover amounts will be adding that to the four thousand dollar budget will be your budget for the 20 21 22 school year the second page that i gave you guys is just an example of what this past school year looked like as you can see there was no nokias that were really attended the big one is the national school boards association annual conference that is usually out of state that's the the big one every year so i know that this year it was virtual next year they are planning that it is going to be an in-person training probably in april may or june of next year so any questions i have a question so the top portion where there was a carryover is that not brought down to the bottom no your carryover is only the previous year so the 2021 the 2020 22 21 this is this school year that's the only amount that's rolling over has it always been that so what happened what happens to whatever is not spent where does that money get back turned into then ken where does the money go uh madam president members of the board when we have uh expenses or encumbrances that are not realized it just rolls into our balance so when we talk about a carry forward that's where it goes and it goes back into contingency fund can you talk a little bit more about a contingency fund i wasn't aware because i um i mean i think it's if we're i think it's great that you know if board members don't use all the money it should go back into something i suppose that would either be equivalent to continuing education or professional development or is there a reason why it just wasn't rolled over though it's never it it always only the previous year has always rolled over it hasn't been if you didn't use your 4000 and then you didn't use your 4000 you're not going to get 20 000 it goes back to the district budget so that the district can utilize the the the funds according to what's needed and that's great it just we should do you think we should have like a definite plan of where it goes rather than just a i just want to know what a contingency fund means madam president members of our board it's our k it's our carry forward so it's not a separate fund it stays within it it's what we've talked about in our conservative budget approach that gives us stability going forward so when we budget staffing new positions coming on we use the average salary if somebody comes above the average salary we're eating into some of that unencumbered money that carry forward going forward as we have years that we have this year where we lost 900 students we gave contracts out 18 months ago and so to be able to honor all those contracts we have to have a carry forward a budget so we do not spend a hundred percent of every dollar that comes in it goes back into the pot we re-look at it and we spend about 99 percent of that money and so it gives us the cushion and the stability to maintain all of our expenses as we're going forward is it um a contingency fund that's very specific to the governing board or is it just one big uh madam president members of the board if you're asking two years ago the money not used did we set that aside and put it in a separate fund no it rolls into the carry forward that's just into the pot and reallocated into our budget part that's not carried into the carry forward um the rollover well right now two years ago right it rolls into the district's carry forward not into your carry forward right yeah okay but is it is it a specific line item that you can actually line up to that it was a governing board fund there is not a specific line item we allocate out almost all separate account it goes into the district's account yep okay all stays within it does not there's not a separate fund that this gets set off into this all stays within the district's mmo budget do you know just out of curiosity the history of why it wasn't rolled over in general understanding you said we haven't done that before typically but just been thinking about it because i know the way the policy reads is if you um use your budget and another conference comes up if you don't have enough in your budget then then you have to either can't go or it has to come before the board for approval so you could especially if you go to one of the national conferences that could that's probably going to be your only major conference you go to because it's a lot um but if you have that extra then that might allow for more professional development if it's already attached to that one particular board member so do you know just out of curiosity with history of it why we just never did that i don't think we can we can't we can't roll over and continuously hold money aside for one for two one school year or two school years the the district has to use the money according to its budget uh no madam president members of the board we could keep a perpetual fund of tracking somebody's going to have to account for it and do it if we would like to do that my personal philosophy that i've been put on uh the district as i've been here is that schools are able to carry forward 100 of their money it's based on number of students and their allocation our departments and others it's based on what is your needs and so we just give it to them it's not based on students and so if they didn't need it we sweep it they're still provided the amount the following year so we're not taking away from them in the future years um if the board would like it to be treated separately we can continue to do that it's um it's just somebody's which would be miss brown would have to maintain and manage that and historically if a board member has used all of their travel they present it to the governing board on an agenda item because some board members don't travel some members will never use their budget and that budgeted allocated for that board member can be transferred over and they can say you can you can have my have my you know four thousand dollars when's the last time the board has looked at that particular amount that fourth is that pretty much just this this meeting right here this time of year where it's the 4000 this is the same agenda item that's been presented um because i know like again like for an example i like the and even though i've only had i was supposed to go last year because of covet but the previous year went into washington dc for the advocacy institute which is amazing but i know if i go to that one then as far as going to the national level school bus conference i'm not going to have enough so that's why there's been some years i didn't realize that there was a uh you couldn't continue to roll it um where i would forego certain conferences because i knew i needed to stay within my budget of what i thought i had but it sounds like that really was to my detriment because there's no saving or budgeting for a particular conference it just disappears and goes into a district contingency fund uh madam president members of the board it only rolls the previous year going forth so if you were saving from two years ago then i did have one question for you miss brown there were two of us that were wanting to go to the national school boards association um that was supposed to be last year the three three well well three yes one longer here um and we had purchased plane tickets and then covet hit and so uh the airlines were not too friendly you know fry the fly the friendly skies wasn't quite friendly so they extended when we could use those tickets is that extended till march of 2022 march 2022.
