standing here before you is not because i'm the second smartest student in this class we are all smart and motivated in our own ways a gpa is only a measurement in a moment of time giving this speech is about perseverance and commitment to growth as an individual or at least that's what it is to me this is the challenge of life i have started to realize juggling what feels like a million expectations prioritizing what is most important now and remembering to follow through with the rest later every day should not be about planning time to be unproductive and content it should be about appreciating your efforts when you've done all you can and then there's time to relax and reminisce on the hard work you've put in how you pushed yourself mentally and physically through tasks you really didn't want to do i think the common misconception was that i enjoyed being that person doing all my work to one up my classmates when in reality it's the independent feeling of accomplishment and contentment when i can impress myself with the quality of my work and reap the benefits of my improvement my intention here is not to talk about myself and say i'm doing it better than you rather to share how i've experienced life or how life has experienced me and how it has helped me grow as a contributing member of society and as a critical thinker success in whatever you're doing starts with your attitude and approach towards it the knowledge comes from the teacher and the skill comes from practicing what you've learned this has been anything but a smooth and easy ride whether talking about the fundamentals of learning either academically in our rec excuse me in our respective shops collaborating with peers learning responsibility and accountability finding ourselves or the biggest obstacle coven 19.

we have pushed through remote learning and we have found a way we've learned that we didn't have to worry about having enough snacks to make it to lunch we also learned you can also learn in your pjs and be in the comfort of our own homes but we also learned that we would miss the everyday person-to-person contact that we would have and how we would miss the hands-on activities no matter how much we hated it before but we've pushed through it we have made it here today and we i'm very proud to call myself a member of the 2021 class and [Applause] thank you joey this time i'd like to introduce king gangwish marsh the senior guidance counselor who will share a few words with us this evening welcome welcome to the commencement ceremony of franklin county tech's class of 2001. the one thing we all have in common as we gather here today is that we are all here to celebrate their graduation from high school myself included so is that we are all here to celebrate their graduation from high school myself included so if those of you in the audience will indulge me for the next couple of minutes i'd like to say a last a few last words these young men and women who have truly stolen my heart and my focus for the last four years but before i begin i want to tack on to what chairman kukowicz said and mr martin said and mr spadafino said and add in a couple more local heroes there are three women that have made that made this year possible liz bouchard the director of the food service program and her amazing staff since last march when this year began she and her staff continue to pack food for those learning remotely while still continuing to serve increasing numbers of breakfast and lunches in two locations and kelly gripco le payne these are our school nurses and they have led us through kelly guided us through from the shutdown last march and sue joined her safe and healthy they're these two women literally worked 24 7 over the course of this year when we had the luxury of weekends and school vacations they were monitoring the coveted situation of both students and faculty making hundreds of contact tracing calls getting serious attitude from those on the other end almost as many meetings with professional colleagues health boards and our administrative team this year could not have had this is their hard work and their professional dedication please join me in gratitude for all they have done and do [Music] [Applause] dearest class of 2021.

we all know that these last years of high school they are not where you respected especially this year senior year but these last 16 months were subject to adapt and grow often in ways we pass can't be changed and it is your future that i want to focus on so i ask using the last two lines from pulitzer prize winner poet mary oliver's poem this summer's day tell me what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life many of you don't know that my life before school counseling i was a cosmetologist a business owner and a traveling consultant for a major manufacturer this career taught me about perishable time in business especially the service sector perishable time usually refers to capacity that is time perishable meaning that capacity without corresponding demand is lost forever for example as a salon owner there are only so many hours in a day in which to produce a certain amount of work in each of those hours depending on the service that was being delivered equaled a certain amount of money if i or one of my employees wasn't serving a customer during one of those available hours of appointment times that time and the money it could have been generated was lost forever like capacity in those industries that are time dependent your own time is perishable though i know that from your young perspective it feels infinite i can tell you it's not not one of us knows how much time we have so if you spend your time lamenting about things you can't change for example the loss of your senior year you're spending time that you could be using for other things as a salon owner i could choose to waste time moaning about the lost revenue of a missed or unscheduled appointment or i could use that time to figure out why and then address a fix it's easy to get caught up in what happened or try to determine the whys of the past but focusing on the what's in the house of the now and what's to come will better serve you and make a better use of your perishable time what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life will you looking back have had one year's experience 10 or 20 times over facing no particular challenges or excitement defeats just plotting along day by day year by year or will you find the courage to hop off whatever beaten path that may be expected of you and take that first step scared and not knowing what's to come while walking anyway is this scary absolutely but no reward no reward without risk someone said it's not the days of your life but the life in your days that count and i can tell you from this end of the perspective that is true i get scary i really get scary i spent most of my time in some state of fear i hate the discomfort and the anxiety but i also know that without taking risks and embracing changes in my life my life might have been safer but absolutely less full i made a major career change when i was 40 and i prepared for it by going back to school in my 30s at that time in my life i was traveling every other weekend as a business consultant i had three employees that i was responsible for i was a mother of two children under the age of five in the middle of a divorce i have no idea who that woman was but she made me who i am today because i took a risk and i jumped off the beaten comfortable and pretty damn lucrative path i was on my first job in education i was part-time and the money was way less than i was making doing hair and it required that i introduce students to the many things that you've learned from miss young and mr thomas resume writing cover letters interviewing skills but without any of their panache and expertise because i had limited experience with interviews i happened to come across a job posting for a position here of fcts so i applied but only so i could get some recent interview experience that i could bring back to my students not because i was interested in a job that was an hour and 20 minutes from my home of my two young children the rest is history this was not something i planned but i set the stage for opportunity and it became one of many forks in the road of my life and the best part is that it led to y'all there is no straight path guys life is full of twists and turns and ups and downs and these last 16 months have been hard proof of that but what i hope you've learned is that you can't go around hard things you have to go through them in order to move forward and this has been the topic of my discussion in my conversations with each of you some of you know what you want to do and where you want to go or be but many of you do not but i want to assure you that being unsure is okay but being stuck because you want to be sure not so much you may not be able to be anything you want to be like the likelihood of playing professional basketball if you're five foot four inches tall but you can be who you're supposed to be steve jobs said to another graduating class your time is limited so don't waste it living someone else's life jump hop dance drop flop fall fail repeat i can promise you that if you start moving on a path towards something be it a dream or a goal or just a thought there will always be a fork or another path to choose these choices may or may not lead you in the direction of which you started they just might take you a little higher and somewhere you never thought you'd find yourself proceed plan participate don't allow a single hour of your one your one wild and precious life to perish to each and every one of you in this class of 2021 you are loved and you will be i'm very thankful for the opportunity to welcome you all this morning graduates we are officially here um a day that some of us have dread while others could not be more excited although today is bittersweet i cannot begin to express my gratitude and my joy for all of you as we embark on this new chapter in our lives with a high school experience unlike any other we have overcome a plethora of obstacles and challenges whether it was the unrest of society political division or coven 19 we have persevered and pushed to the finish line after all the contact tracing social distancing and mask wearing not only have we persisted through the global pandemic we never have to hear mr peter say again this is your daily reminder to wear your mask over your mouth and your nose please wash and or sanitize your hands frequently that is something to be thankful for amen amen yeah amen to that one all jokes aside class of 2021 we have stayed the course and we've overcome these challenges i don't believe it was by accident that we were the class to pick up the pieces of last year to go through the treacherous season that we did i believe it had purpose and i believe that we were created for these times and as a result we have been forged for future success we have shown we can overcome obstacles together and we should be confident to do so through the remainder of our lives i was told by ms bata that today my job was to brag on you all and tell you how amazing you are and i knew that would be easy considering how amazing this class has been over the past four years after all we are the best class to ever walk through these hallowed halls yet this was only made possible by the school employees who got up early every morning and poured into our lives they woke up early they helped us succeed inside and outside of the classroom with that being said can we all please give a big round of applause to all of our current and former greensburg staff employees whether you are a cafeteria assistant a custodial staff member maintenance member teacher coach or administrator our success is only possible by you pouring into our lives i may forget y equals mx plus b in a few years or i may forget to use the squirrel rand blank the tree to find a preposition in english class but i speak for all of the seniors in here when i say that the lessons you taught us about life mean more to us than any argumentative essay outline you could give us or any calculus lesson you could teach us on behalf of the class of 2021 thank you to our teachers and our coaches next i would like to thank the families in this room if you look around you can tell we are surrounded by all of those who love us the families that support us without you all and your outpouring of love and support for this class we wouldn't be here today your guidance and love has helped prepare us for our futures and helped us get through these high school these past four years of high school thank you for all of the early morning wake up calls for the drives to dollar general at 9 pm to pick up poster board when science fair was due the next day the rides to school and simply the wisdom on how to be a high school student thank you for everything that you do all of our families thank you very much big round of applause for them now it's your turn let the bragging commence whether it was in the classroom on the athletic field on the stage or in school clubs the class of 2021 has had plenty of success as proof this year we have totaled over 3.3 million dollars in scholarship money we have won or been a part of 16 ihsaa titles and hopefully soon to be 17 by the end of the night when the girls softball team plays for the semi-state championship we have over 20 all-conference athletes and we have broken numerous school records and track and swimming also inside our school walls we have had numerous clubs and organizations be pillars of activism and volunteerism in our community whether it was the fca club's diligent service to their coaches and teachers at the coaches breakfast junior optimists volunteer work for the cheer fund national honor society's kindness cards for those in nursing homes or sad's first annual community 5k race our class you all have worked diligently to mobilize your peers and encourage positive change in the lives of others throughout our community and throughout our school all of our success is too long to list however these few are excellent examples of the quality of students in this class i am beyond proud to be a part of this class and i am honored to be able to say that i am your classmate as i close i would like to close with just a little bit of sappiness just because miss batta told me not to first i want to encourage you all from this point forward to never take a day for granted i know that's really innovative and you've probably never heard it before but if there's anything that we have learned over the past year and a half it's that nothing is guaranteed we aren't guaranteed to go to regionals after we win the sectional championship in basketball we aren't guaranteed to come back to school after spring break we aren't guaranteed another prom or even another opportunity to wake in the morning so when allowed to be thankful and realize that every opportunity you have each day is another opportunity to mobilize positive change in the lives of other people class of 2021 you are unlike any class this class is beautiful in every way and you all are designed for incredible things i am beyond proud to have been a part of this class and be and be called your classmate i look forward to being a part of the next chapter with you all i love you all i'm very proud of you thank you and congratulations thank you ben of greensburg community high school before we move too far let's take a moment to reflect on this benchmark 150 years of graduating classes from greensburg high school the first graduating class was here are some notable items from that year first there was no pandemic i repeat there was no pandemic not in 1871. however the first major league i use air quotes baseball game was played between fort wayne and cleveland the hoosiers won by the way ulysses s grant was the president of the united states jesse james was active as a bank robber stealing 15 thousand dollars from a bank in iowa our final point of reference is the great fire fire of chicago unfortunately it killed 200 people and destroyed over four square miles while causing 222 million dollars in damage and that's 1871 standards so that doesn't take into account inflation even though we're 150 years in the future we can all still draw parallels between now and then accidents happen strong leadership is available innovators excel we find pastimes students also graduate from high school to celebrate this i'd like to read the two names that were graduates from the year 1871.

set a goal to have at least five a pluses not just a's but a pluses my family is a big reason why i have been able to work so hard it's easier to give it your all when you have someone in your corner encouraging you to succeed my family has always been in my corner and supports me in everything i do without their support and encouragement i wouldn't be where i am today in school sports and life they are here today and they will be at my softball semi-state game right after graduation one particular family member who has given me extra motivation is my sister kiera who is also a valedictorian if it wasn't for her i might not have cared so much about keeping my 4.0 because if i would have lost it i would have never heard the end of it and she would have been able to say she is smarter than me which is definitely not the case kiera however still has a perfect gpa college after two years so she is really making it hard on me to keep the smarts battle going they will probably always be the question of who is smarter between the two of us but i do have more common sense than she does so at least i know i beat her at that i think our smarts and sas are the only things we have in common because our personalities and interests are almost complete opposites so grades are the only thing i can compete with her on and this continually pushes me to do my best i have to win but if she keeps her perfect grades i think this is something i could lose maybe we will just have to see how long the competition will last although it may not be a rivalry between you and your sibling or a desire to compete and win it is important to find what motivates you and encourages you to succeed if you are motivated it will become easier to set goals and achieve those goals so a big thank you to my competitive self antiquiera for being my motivation and making me have to give this speech thank you [Applause] thank you miss cooney our next valedictorian that we will hear from is miss gabby haviland gabby is the daughter of matt and mandy havilland would each of gabby's parents please now stand gabby has made us all proud during her time at gchs she participated in student council sad club champions together and also received her cna certification she also plans to attend the university of cincinnati and study biology please welcome miss gabby haviland good morning life is like being stranded in the middle of the ocean and trying to make it to land the ocean is an unpredictable and seemingly scary place the ocean is scary by itself but now imagine being thrown into the middle of it just like we are being thrown into life right now there's a lot of pressure to stay afloat just like how i put a lot of pressure on myself so i could be one of the six valedictorians standing before you today i'm sure that most of you have seen me stress out and lose my mind before tests and i cannot even count the number of times i've literally broken out in hives from the stress of ap chem ap stats swank and holland's dreadful essays and calculus high school was extremely overwhelming just like how the ocean could threaten to overwhelm you by swimming but luckily high school has taught us to swim high school has helped prepare us for the world we are about to step into we have all spent so many years together and we have all formed so many friendships with one another but now we are all swimming in different directions right now we have reached a major checkpoint we have reached the shore of an island but that is not the end of the journey even though we are at this island we will all face different struggles and challenges moving forward luckily when we get back into the ocean and start swimming again we all have our lifeboats that will help us get through our lifeboats are our friends family and mentors that are sitting around us and also up in the bleachers my lifelines have been my mom and dad and other family members i'm so thankful to have gone through high school with the support of these people they have repeatedly pushed me out of my comfort zone like when i was too nervous to join golf shout out to mr mize for helping me to improve my horrendous golf swing without them i probably would have never been involved with anything if there's one thing that high school has taught me it is that you cannot let fear stop you from doing the things that you want in the beginning i was scared to jump in but looking back i can see how far we've all come even though these past four years may have been the most stressful of my life i unfortunately still have 12 more years of schooling to go without we're when you're in the middle of the ocean it is hard to tell what the final destination is but i hope that all of us sitting here today have some idea of where we want our final destination to be but don't let that destination scare you remember you always have the option to jump back in and start swimming to somewhere new no matter what shore you end up on i wish you good luck in all that you do and when we face the struggles to come i want you to remember to just keep swimming [Applause] thank you gabby it is now time to acknowledge and hear from miss tanay kramer today is the daughter of rick and lisa cramer mr mrs kramer would you now please stand to be recognized today's career here at gchs is quite impressive her activities and accomplishments include light and sound crew sad club and was nominated as an indiana rising star while holding many jobs and maintaining several volunteer opportunities in the fall tanay plans to study accounting at ball state university ladies and gentlemen miss tanay kramer good morning as mr peters introduced me my name is tanay kramer although many of you may know me as tania tanaya tiny tinny tanai tin can flippy along with many other names i would like to reiterate the previously mentioned thank yous along with a thank you to my family friends and to god when i was in fourth grade i got my first and only b i got a 94 in social studies and at st mary's that was a b-plus yeah tough school when i brought home my report card my parents sat me down and they had a very long talk with me they told me they knew i was capable of much more i needed to develop a better work ethic from then on i've never earned a beyond a report card many times i found myself looking for the silver lining in all of this what was i getting out of this besides stress and anxiety i never planned to earn all a's it just kind of happened because i was afraid of disappointing my parents so you can thank them for having to listen to another speech today it often felt like i was doing the work for more than one person especially having worked at least one job for all four years of high school and two jobs for almost two years however standing up here today speaking with seven other highly intelligent motivated individuals i have found the silver lining i'm able to share my advice and knowledge with not only with my classmates but also with my community i'm so proud of everyone here and for once i can say i'm proud of myself as well what i'm saying is things don't always go as you plan but you have to look for the silver lining even if you don't see it right away our class has been through so much together we went from seeing jerseys down the hall on game day to blinking an eye and now we're here in the gym about to throw our caps in the air we started freshman year hearing mr karezia say what's up when we walked into his classroom we went to geometry where mrs batta dreading having the magnificent seven in class sophomore year we walked into chemistry having just sat with our entire class out on the ramp trying to finish our labs we walked into senora taylor's classroom where everyone groaned after hearing it's spanish-only notebook time to this she would reply shh it'll hear you then on to mr messer my ap world history teacher who taught me about the amount of potassium in a banana which energy drinks are the worst and that magic is real junior year brought mr holland and getting four out of tens on our first essays it brought mr pratt where we all started out failing our verbal quizzes to this he said it was the best of times it was the worst of times senior year brought me der mais where our work ethics went down the drain it brought mrs swank where our writing and analyzing abilities were tested to the max and it brought mrs marath where econ challenged whether or not some would even graduate while these classes seemed extremely stressful in the moment they gave me lessons i'll never forget working so hard in these classes led me to networking and building close relationships with not only my classmates but also my teachers i'm standing here today with one year of college completed and almost a full ride you may not see the silver lining of trying hard in school but there will be a day when all of that hard work pays off although our class will never be known as the covid class that title belongs to the class of 2020.

we still had a few minor bumps along the way we didn't get normal football or basketball game cheer blocks a senior trip graduation walk throughs at the elementary or junior high or pep rallies however there were some new occurrences this year for example we had a two-hour delay for a fugitive on the loose this meant extra time to sleep and a little bit more time to study for our calculus test so fugitive if you're here today i personally thank you we got an early dismissal for a water main break while almost everything was shut down for a little while i learned that energy drinks keep me going just as well as coffee does we had a two hour delay for snow in april although i hate snow besides on christmas it was a nice chance to sleep in and relax and finally for once we had a nice sunny day for prom while the past year has been full of unexpected turns of events there's been a silver lining for all of it another lesson i've learned is to accept people as they are no matter where they come from because everyone deserves a chance i pray everyone leaves here with an open mind and a kind heart things may blow up in your face but let that push you forward life is short live it anger is bad let go of it love is rare so hold on to it fear is a mind killer so face it and finally memories are sweet cherish them don't take for granted the lessons you've learned and the people you've encountered always look on the bright side because everything happens for a reason when you get where you're going don't forget to turn around and help the next one in line today i conclude my speech with one final question and if you know the answer i'd like for you to please shout it out class of 2021 last of the prime in the words of one of our wisest teachers if quizzes are quizzicals what are tests thank you and congratulations [Music] thank you miss kramer our next address will be a joint speech between two valedictorians these two are katie mclean and sarah springmeier let's first acknowledge them individually katie is the daughter of dan and robin mclean can we please have mr mrs mclean please now stand katie will be leaving a very strong legacy at gchs she was a four-year member of our swim team where she was a captain and served in our sad and junior optimist clubs katie will be attending purdue university to major in kinesiology please help me acknowledge miss katie mclean [Music] miss sarah springmeier will also be speaking now as a fellow valedictorian sarah is the daughter of dave and renee springmeier can we please now have mr mrs springmeier please now stand sarah has been incredibly involved the last four years miss springmeyer served as member of our junior optimist and sag clubs a volunteer for the bread of life and had a very successful career on our swim team sarah plans to major in accounting to indiana university purdue university columbus please help me welcome to the stage miss sarah springmeier and katie mclean [Music] good morning everyone this is actually one of several speeches you will heard today and for that we apologize for any redundancy but then high school was certainly filled with redundancy from mr peter's daily reminder to wear your mask over mouth and nose to mr holland's never-ending desire to bring tears to the eyes of unexpecting juniors nothing ever seemed to change but guess what we're moving on from the redundancies of high school as soon as we make it across this stage today hopefully without tripping we can all gladly say goodbye to monthly fire drills one-way socially distanced yet crowded hallways and mrs bata's redundant senior citizen emails however these redundancies have not gone without value thankfully we have been able to learn from them whether we realize it or not fortunately for you today we will share some of the unique lessons we have learned and missed the monotonous repetitions of high school ones that we can hopefully carry with us into our next chapter of life lesson one know how to do basic algebra or as mr mize would say don't let algebra be the hard part of calculus if i had a dollar for every time i heard that phrase this year i don't think i would have needed to apply for any scholarships he was not wrong yet most of us still did exactly what he told us not to lesson two in chemistry class more is always better or as mr davis would say minus one more though not everyone will be headed into more dreaded chemistry classes and we are quite thankful for that it is important to understand that doing the bare minimum and sometimes even slightly more than that will not always lead to success all those one sentence dodging the question yet still trying to seem like you knew what you were doing answers probably won't cut it in the future mr davis as much as we hate to admit it you might have been on to something lesson three appreciate the last crispito day crispitos are an experience like no other unfortunately we will no longer be able to enjoy crespitos every tenth school day crespito days however it will not be forgotten and will surely be missed as some of us enter our college years of ramen noodles on a daily basis the last of crespito days came too quickly just as the end of senior year did and should have been savored more than what they were please learn from our mistakes lesson four accept the fact that things are changing coronavirus threw a real curveball at us but in some ways i think it did us a small favor we learned to survive through stressful times and adapt to strange situations quickly although we hope that everything returns to normal soon i think it's a good thing that we all now understand how quickly things can change especially as we approach one of the biggest changes in our lives we can now accept our entrance into adulthood and the changes that come with it knowing that hey at least it won't be as bad as that one time everyone was out of toilet paper lesson five find lessons within the repetitions and redundancies of life though the redundancies may seem never ending in the moment clearly they come to an end we are now there in the end we made it and are finally able to enter a new chapter in our lives where big changes present themselves only to become redundancies once more soon enough those monthly house payments piles of clothes need to be laundered and hours spent at walmart each week will become all too redundant luckily for us we now know to not let even redundancies like those go unappreciated the path to the future has been scary stressful and at times monotonous but in the end we will all be thankful for this moment and the lessons learned from the never-ending repetitions of life thank you thank you to both katie and sarah our final valedictorian to speak is miss ariana sia ariana is the daughter of ranielle and mariadocia would mr mississia please now stand [Music] [Applause] ariana has been an outstanding student during her time at gchs she has been a four-year member of student council and our swim team served in fca national honor society and as secretary of junior optimist club ariana will attend indiana university and study exercise science next school year please help me welcome miss ariana sia i have a fear of goldfish and i'm not referring to the delicious snack but to the boring little fish that some keep as pets i once had three goldfish but they all tragically died of poisoning you see during my family's move to our current house in the fifth grade my dad moved my fish to a vase for easy transport however he didn't know that the vase water contained bleach apparently you can add a small amount of bleach to water in order to keep your flowers fresh which is exactly what my mom did a few minutes prior my three goldfish died pretty much instantly it was tragic and traumatizing thus my fear of goldfish originated through my short-lived time as a fish owner i realized a valuable lesson that i would like to share with you all my first goldfish that i ingeniously named goldie was your classic plain jane goldie was the type of goldfish to aimlessly swim back and forth sometimes he hit the side of the fishbowl and sometimes he swam upwards but most of the time he just swam in a circle that was all he ever knew and he was perfectly comfortable doing so my second goldfish was named roxy i named her for no reason other than i thought the name was pretty cool roxy was the type of fish that never left the decorative little fish house in the fish tank she was snug and secure in the shelter of her home and in the shade of her kelp plants my third and final goldfish was named spike spike was the equivalent of an adrenaline junkie i remember one day i was cleaning the tank over the sink in order to clean it i had to take each goldfish out one at a time and transfer them to a smaller container well when it was spike's turn for transfer he jumped out of the net and right into the garbage disposal i forgot to put the splash guard in place because i had just done the dishes i thought he was a goner yet i found spike miraculously flopping around right next to the blades don't worry the garbage disposal wasn't on and he was completely fine when i put him back into his tank spike may have not been harmed but my ego sure was was i really that bad of a fish owner that he wanted to escape well it turns out that my fish just needed a bigger tank surely after that traumatizing experience i went to good old walmart and upgraded them from a 5 gallon tank to a 10 gallon tank although he almost gave me a few heart attacks my favorite goldfish was always and will always be spike i realized that spike made the most out of his life because he knew that there was more out there than a 5 gallon fish tank he took the risk of possibly dying and was rewarded with a tank twice the size of his old one unlike spike life in the fish tank was all goldie and roxy knew they never saw the insides of a kitchen sink or felt the coldness of hardwood floors or felt the exhilaration of tank jumping they were too comfortable in their environment and missed out on these experiences spike wasn't confined to the walls of his fish tank and lived the most eventful life a fish could live he spent some of his life being uncomfortable in a small tank but his uncomfortability resulted in something bigger and better my fellow graduates do not be stuck in the confines of your fish tank the tank may seem snug and secure but always remember that growth does not flourish and comfortability it is better to be bold and fail than to never grow at all as albert einstein once said a ship is always safe at shore but that is not what it is built for life after high school may seem scary and uncertain but just know that you are swimming you are growing and you are alive be confident in the path that you are taking as your doubts about your future will only poison you just like it did my fish so if you were to leave here with anything let it be this sail your ship make those jumps and maybe just maybe goldfish aren't so bad after all thank you [Applause] thank you miss sia now we will hear from our salutatorian the salutatorian for the class of 2021 is miss kaylin lowe kay lynn is the daughter of mark and don lowe mr mrs lowe would you now please stand [Music] kay lynn participated in several activities including junior optimist club national honor society a four-year member of student council and co-president of fellowship of christian athletes among many other activities kaylin plans to attend marietta college in the pre-positions assistant program ladies and gentlemen miss kaylin lowe morning everyone i am standing up here today speaking after all of these amazing peers and friends because i lost my 4.0 gpa now in the bible god says that the first shall be last so i guess that means i'm technically one step ahead of y'all i know what many of you are probably thinking you're salutatorian i think you've done pretty well for yourself and you should be thankful don't get me wrong i am extremely grateful but let me tell you you would not have wanted to be a fly on the wall in my makeshift classroom that is my dining room as i finished up my junior year with a 3.99 gpa in the midst of copin i was devastated and felt like a failure i knew i was capable of getting an a in that class there were several days okay weeks okay maybe a couple of months where i was angry frustrated and disappointed in myself because of my obsession with my grades and achieving perfect academic and athletic excellence i began to overlook the importance of shaping my character as an individual i was becoming more concerned with my achievements and appearance than how i was making an impact on others however over the last year i have been reminded of a very valuable lesson in my 18 years of life i have had more close family members pass away than i would expect before i turned 50.

my great-grandpa two of my great-grandmas my grandpa of lung cancer my other grandpa of esophageal cancer and my 18 year old cousin in a car accident thinking back to the events of their funerals not a single person in attendance talked about their gpa what positions they played on the quarter field how many gold stars they had on their name tag or how long it took them to get a diploma however everyone in attendance reminisced on how their character heart for others and willingness to serve had made a memorable impact on their own lives sure in five years we'll still remember how one of the shyest guys in our class was hypnotized and ran around a barn dancing and twirling a ribbon or how a girl gave herself a busted lip with her own tennis racket in gym class however in 30 or 40 years we'll remember the teachers and peers who encouraged us to chase our dreams and helped us along the way my mom has always taught me that the way we respond to situations shows our character so i encourage you to ask yourself how am i living throughout our four years of high school we have all been looking for the light at the end of the tunnel but as i stand here in the light on graduation day i can honestly say that the journey has been the most important part after all we are the seniors of 2021 we are the ones who picked up our bags and returned for another school year another sports season and another school lunch amidst an ever-changing world after pushing through late nights disappointments sorrows and even a worldwide pandemic we persevered and strived to make the best of every situation that came our way as we embark on our future endeavors i encourage us all to take the time to think about how we want to be remembered and what impact we want to leave behind our journey has made us who we are so far but we can determine who we continue to be so go out into the world chase your dreams reach your goals don't fear failure but be terrified of regret thank you great speeches by everybody thank you it is now time to affirm our graduates superintendent hunter and members of the school board of trustees i present to you the class of 2021 as building principal i certify those whose names are printed on the roster and those whose names will be read have successfully completed their individual education programs and have met all the requirements of the greensburg community school corporation in the state of indiana they are entitled to receive the appropriate documents declaring them as graduates of greensburg community high school thank you mr peters congratulations class of 2021 as superintendent of greensburg schools i accept these students on behalf of the school board of trustees and through the power granted by the state of indiana i present them to mr mark walter president of greensburg school board for the awarding of diplomas thank you and may your future be filled with success we will now present our diplomas to the class of 2021.

so move madam chair with the stipulation that they be held until the matter for which they were intended is completed a second though thank you i have a motion by mr nunes a second by mr oliver any discussion the only thing i will i will say with respect not just to these is perhaps maybe it's time i don't know how when we go back and look about releasing but those stipulations that mr nunes always greatly ads for us that it may be time to go back and look to see which other ones we can not release yeah um so we might want to remember to do we have to put a whole meeting together just the release you saying that i just wanna it reminds me that we we'll maybe take all summer to get yeah summer's summer is a good time to do that right because we know the rest this year in particular has been very busy any further questions or discussion on the motion all right hearing none all in favor uh anyone opposed motion carries unanimously all right so next we're going to move on to the consent agenda um and mr kiley you're going to talk about the smack yes yes dr jenkins thank you so this spec lease includes a three percent increase in fee but more importantly it includes the addition of two classrooms at the quinn school to support our special needs population so i think dr gifford mentioned that to the committee that we were looking at that and uh so this will provide those two spaces for them um and you know we have the space in the building they were currently used for a classroom that had similar um you know similar needs being met this will just allow smack to be able to better serve our our student population so these funds are paid by smack to us and can be used to purchase things for our facilities maintain our facilities so they'll be i'll be happy to receive them and we'll help out the quinn school with any needs that they might have with those funds questions from the committee mr oliver thank you madam chair i would just ask can we just talk a little bit about uh the program that this is um replacing the in-house program whether it's the pals of the paths program and what's the reasoning behind that because i know that it's pro it's still fairly new it's three or four years old i want to say um so how did this come about sure yeah it is fairly new and uh you know we were excited when we when we instituted the program but what we found was that it was a challenge for us um the collaborative has a certain ability to provide education for kids that that we cannot in the public schools um and you know it is part of their core competency to you know to provide service um they have a lot of resources available to them that we may not be used to providing our enrollment was down to two students so it's a lot of staffing for two students what is the current what is the current staffing that we have in place there through the dartmouth public schools we had our teacher of course and then uh two assistants two assistants now but as you know it also uh requires this will relieve our speech our ot's all of the folks all related services and we all talked about it when we brought the program in we saw our teachers come forth and we're you know hesitant and everyone was anxious about it and like mr kylie said we gave it a shot but seeing the enrollment go down um and actually the potential for one of the two students in there with through the team process which is has been taking place with the parents um well there was a potential for that student uh to go somewhere else as already so we just decided it was the best course of action sure so i have two more follow-up questions so one being that the staff that are currently in there are they gonna are are we keeping them on on payroll here or are we looking at respect looking to maybe um hire them they'll they they are being absorbed within the school they are we are able to absorb them within the school okay and then the other thing that i think it's important to know is that by us leasing this classroom to smack um there there is that a ability for us to or for other students to go to that program as well not just dartmouth students correct exactly that's right exactly so i think that's great so thank you very much yeah i'm in favor of that other questions i don't have a question i just think um you know thank you for answering my questions i wasn't quite sure when we got them i was like is this because of colvin and maybe children are regressing and then dr gifford was very um clear about how we have you know we have some to clarify this is one i'm assuming this is one paths classroom and then a pals classroom correct this is i mean i mean i mean i'm sorry this is just the path just paths okay so okay thank you sorry clarify myself um but i think this is great in terms of just that continuity and then also the continuum because we weren't right now you know the way it was able to keep those students and then provide at higher levels the same sort of supports and services so this will allow them to be within that program and have some kind we just want to commend the staff that has been working in that room they have done a fabulous job trying really hard to meet the needs of those students um but like mr kiley said there were just some things that a collaborative can do differently as you know that than we can and um we just after we started having the conversation last year and then it just really came to um we said we've got to make that decision and i think this is a better better course i'm glad we did yeah yeah that's all other questions no miss wait no thank you okay so do we need a we need a motion to approve i will entertain said motion to approve this agreement i'll make a motion that we uh approve the lease request for this southeast massachusetts educational collaborative for fy22 i'll second okay so i have a motion by mr oliver a second by miss amaral is there any further discussion on the motion hearing none all in favor aye aye aye opposed any abstentions adam chair as the treasurer of smack i will abstain okay so that motion carries with four in favor and one abstention thank you mr nunes um next moving on to new business i'm gonna again turn it over to you mr kiley for some end-of-year authorizations thank you dr jenkins so each year at this time i seek your approval to transfer funds in order to make year-end adjustments from one budget area to another so we don't do that during the year without you know seeking your approval now this year as you can imagine has been particularly challenging and there's areas like field trips where obviously we weren't going on field trips there's there's quite a bit in the budget that didn't happen as expected some to the positive some to the negative uh we were fortunate that we had the grant funds or we would not this would have been a whole different year for everyone but financially but we're at the point now where we want to focus on specific needs that are tied to our strategic plan so things like textbooks classroom materials technology materials to make sure that we're supporting the schools in the best way and we do that by collaborating with each of the schools and departments and making sure that you know we have a plan it's it's strategic in the way that we do it and um so we're at that point and seeking your approval to be able to move forward thank you uh questions from the committee mr oliver thank you madam chair uh mr kylie i would just ask is it possible that you could in the next maybe but before the next meeting just share with the uh the committee where we're at budgeting wise whether it's whether some type of surplus or you know where we're at just overall i don't i don't personally need anything specific just kind of like you know where we're at our bottom lines certainly yeah i can give you a little a little bit of an idea now that um you know there's significant areas in the budget like i said like field trips particularly transportation where we were remote for a period and then you know rolling kids in gradually where there are savings in the budget and it's not the normal year where i you know spend everything down to the penny because we're that tight it's it's a different sort of year where there are significant uh some significant savings in some accounts sure some yeah so but yeah i'd be happy to be helpful sure other questions comments uh i have one of the comments that mr kylie had and i'm not going to ask you to answer this but i hope we can come back to it as the question of textbooks i say this because i just returned my son's u.s gopro textbook um i teach us government and politics and it is old um and that is not so much of a problem when you say teaching math it's a bigger problem when you're teaching about campaigns and elections and the most recent election referenced was 2008 so i but i also wonder as someone who teaches in this area our strategy around textbooks and particularly technology digital textbooks oer textbooks have become really big for us and so i'm wondering if maybe sometime this summer we can have a conversation about what we're doing around textbooks it is a very significant expenditure for us it is also an area where i know that we have struggled as a district to keep up with our textbook needs i've always gone into open house and there's at least one classroom where i am like how can the poor teachers continue to be using these textbooks so i would just like to maybe get a presentation um sometime this summer maybe about what our strategy is about textbooks um because i know again historically i'm looking at mr nunes mr nunes has been around for we had some textbook wars i think about whether or not they were capital expenditures or not yeah no they you know i mean one of the it's one of the things is they've always been a regular line item in the budget right you know by you know by department and that that type of deal i mean and and i i i laugh when you're sitting here talking about 2008 with an election and i remember years ago and that uh having a discussion you know there was a discussion and i don't remember what it was but it was something that again it was you know 10 or 15 years before and that was the textbook we were using but also too in retrospect of it back then funds were a lot tighter right that type of deal you know the bond had fallen out of everything so there were some things that you know as i always said do i buy a a box of pencils for a student or a mop for the for the custodian well you know what mr gus mr mrs custodian lean on the mop a little heavier a little hotter i got to buy the box of pencils so yeah i so that would be great i mean that's not to say we don't want to authorize that but i i would like for us to come back around to that um that issue because it is a significant expense um for us yeah and one of the one of the things too and i mean i can i'll say it now is mr kylie is once you know you get everything all closed out at the end of the year if you can just give us a report as to you know the dollar amounts that were transferred between line sure between categories not so much line items but categories as you eat that won't be for next meeting no no no no no that's that can be like and i totally realize that's august or september when things are closed now i'm good with that yeah okay you're still closing stuff out into july so i'm good but you know when it's all done all said and done okay so any other comments so i will entertain a motion to um transfer line item budget transfer authority to uh mr kylie yeah madam chair i'll make the motion that we authorize the assistant superintendent of budget and finance to make the necessary budget transfers uh for school year 2021 according to uh policy dbj thank you mr newness i have a second second all right so i have a motion uh by mr nunes a second by miss waite is there any further discussion on the issue hearing none all in favor aye aye opposed that motion carries unanimously okay so next i'm going to turn it over to dr gifford for the superintendent's evaluation presentation thank you thank you so um this will be a mid-cycle i think we got thrown off with the co-fit and everything else so um this will be a mid-cycle evaluation if you will and if you recall this will be i thought after tonight you won't have to fill out the documents if you recall the mid-cycle but you can have a conversation probably at the next meeting and that's what we've done in the past so let's see i think you'll you will kind of understand the no ordinary time uh reference and uh miss dr jenkins of course will being a history and government person will get that but um i thought that was appropriate um if you recall if you will note that i did provide you with all of these documents i'm hoping you were able to access them because everything's clickable and it made it nice and easy for you so i'll just kind of reference this this sheet before i go over just some highlights of what i want to highlight this year this grid um is clickable for i reference the agendas over the last two years you can click on those you know what they are but just to bring forth the idea that all of our work we do here and you're you you know it so you see what we've done and then under the standard one and two we put the goals there because although we uh touch upon the other standards as well they're kind of really very appropriate to standards one and two so that's there the and again as a review just to making sure you have everything in that drive i shared with you the three goals professional practice goal student learning goal and the district improvement goal all also have examples of documents that are all clickable just again samples of things that will show the work in those areas and then of course the highlighted summary narrative which is kind of what i'm going to go over right now so before i get into it i just wanted to bring forth the idea of the leadership that it took and the collaboration that it took throughout the last let's say year and a half because we really referenced that in this summary grid as well as the um three goals and looking at different things with leadership you think about all of these things that everyone in this business had to go through to to make sure that we were able to bring forth the team continue to enhance collaboration keeping the community on board being prepared you know with all the plans we had to make etc so obviously i'm not going to read this but we thought that this would be important to mention and i think the last one just remaining true to the cause that as we continued and i mentioned it yesterday actually at graduation the decisions that had to be made but always thinking how can we best serve the kids um as well as keeping our staff safe so some of our focus areas for the year as you can see you know them once again but i just wanted to make sure people were aware health and safety obviously became the first focus area that we had to deal with as we didn't know what was happening as the guidance began to come out as we first closed and where are we opening where we not opening and then how do we prepare our buildings and and prepare our buildings for everyone to come back as well as provide enough ppe et cetera for our staff um being prepared with covid responses what does the guidance say how do we collaborate with the director of public health our nursing department etc um mental health support we've all spoken about that throughout the year that's was very important to us and how do we make sure that folks felt safe and supported as they came back into schools effective communication of course weekly updates both from central office as well as the principals newsletters sent out the facebook page etc of course one of the major things was to maintain relationships and that was important as we continued to make sure teachers had connections to kids make sure we had enough technology that folks could access what was happening in the schools etcetera and as we know our tech department was fabulous to enhance that technology access and mr galesha was tired of receiving accolades over there the professional development that had to happen uh i i i cannot thank once again our its folks enough just to get us started and when teachers threw their hands up and so many it was so new to to everyone and um again preparedness how do we shift make those shifts not only when we immediately close what does that look like but then how did we how are we prepared to shift between models of education and really accommodate so many needs so many diverse needs with the virtual academies with ingenuity and then flipping in and out of those and how do we adjust kids grades or adjust the standards that they needed to act continue to learn about etc so so i'm just going to go through quickly each i broke it down to what were the actions taken under it's hard to break down these standards as you all know everything intertwined you do one thing in one and it overlaps in the other but try to put things into a little box i guess excuse me i'm getting a dry throat so under instructional leadership as i said the if you recall immediately we set up the extended learning site and that just continued to evolve as we remained close and and and tried to provide activities for students and and and provide information and resources on the various areas such as special needs such as the l um students and and all of that so that continued to take shape we would get input from teachers etc if you might you might recall towards the end of that we created an activities in action tab that was to be able to showcase some of the some of the work that the students were doing and of course we had to do the return to school plan and that took so much time to we immediately planned for a full return but that was impossible under the guidance so as you know we had the other two plans ready to go and we have switched between all of them obviously the three basic models of education for virtual and we all know about those but i would say like the elementary virtual academy that took think about it i mean hiring training new teachers making sure we had a space for them creating a big classroom for them working with parents not only through the tech department but also the teachers themselves as well as we gave a stipend for some folks to be like the coordinator of it to answer parents questions and and keep them um keep them engaged the ingenuity of course the high school did a great job with that and then tucker at the middle school after the bumpy start the the work that the guidance department as well as the teachers that set up various schedules various tutoring opportunities etc so we all know about our increased capacity with technology and as i said that also speaks to the professional development that had to take place to make sure our teachers were prepared just the simple thing we might think it's simple so many folks thought it was simple of having them for example have the computer there teaching a class but also knowing that so for them to bounce back and forth and then who was on the screen and who wasn't so it was a lot for our teachers to do as they were learning how to use the various technology tools um and then the shifting of the we call the pedagogy because again they used to sitting here with 25 or so students in front of them we immediately started with zoom if you recall switched over because of various things we wanted to make sure that what we were using was education supportive of education and all of that so the google classroom and the google meet we had teachers videotaping lessons to fill in where we didn't have enough staff etc they were just fabulous of course as i said before the continuation with all of these things we had to switch schedules for students to get their related services whether it was remote or not etc and then of course continuing to meet students needs by continuing to implement some of those programs that many districts did not for example the athletic music and various clubs of course management operations i don't think we have to talk too much about that but i'll go over these a little quick just again the technology that was just so crucial and important and the maintenance of it continuing to secure enough of it the um with remote it was it could be very easy to become disengaged with folks so continue those meetings with the various departments special ed department with beth and miss townsend and miss jodwin etc continuing to reach out for substitutes make sure they were ready to go and also the use of our tas when teachers were out so they were prepared at the various schools to take over the classrooms as people might have been out on covet leave the management of those leaves and and keeping records of that documenting all of that and of course maintaining our practices furnishing ppe all of that outdoor resources as time got closer and closer to the end of this school year the collaboration with public health we were on as you know meetings weekly with that department as well as our nurses our admin would come into those meetings and of course on the phone and other meetings as things arose obviously the nursing staff is to be thanked as well we had to do some schedule adjustments and as you know we added an extra nurse for the year as well to help with that some grants that we we secured to help with all of the costs plus the ones that we were given kind of thankfully use of that those code funds the strategic use of coveted funds not only throughout the last year but as we're looking forward to our budget of what kind of staff can we bring in with those sr3 monies etc and of course just keeping i think i made my last deci hotline call today i hope with two students it's ending on the 16th so i made one today i'm hoping that's it and of course the transportation and implementation which was a bear in the beginning as we were bringing in cohorts of students a b which cohort were they in where were they getting dropped off etc etc so family and community i think again everything overlaps not only the meetings with as i put here with various school districts across the state as well as department of vet to be able to provide families with updates on what was happening those communications as i said before via the principles as well as central office as well as our facebook and and um email blasts etcetera and we do have it right today mr today i said five thousand meals is five over five five hundred thousand meals so that community engagement which will continue this summer and um i can't say enough about the families and the um schools with again the virtual team meetings that now started which is now a good thing we think we can keep families more engaged by doing that etc and the tech department that continue to reach out personally delivering things even to their houses and last but not least on the four uh standards once again again the repeats of some of the things but the frequent meetings i'm showing folks that they were supported um the special ed this is just an example special ed staff lead teachers speech speech program we've been meeting with them as well um ensuring that teachers had the very updated tools technology to support we can't ask them to do what we asked them to do without making sure as professionals that they were provided with the appropriate tools and the focus on the social emotional same kind of thing diversity and inclusion that ongoing professional development support to support everything that we were doing the pedagogy even you think about the shifts in grading like at the high school or how it came about where it's okay to have kids take longer or be able to re relearn things if you will and how did we shift the grading and how did we shift the assessments more project based etc we had the creation of the dps professional development center and i i know one of the other things that isn't even here is the elementary newsletter that was created the curriculum newsletter that engaged all of the teachers in that work etc and of course as you know the um multiple negotiation sessions on that professional level with dea so that's kind of the highlights as i said you have much more detail in the documents that you received you can take take a peek at your leisure the the green on the summary grid was more started with like last year as we moved into this year we put the red because we thought again the closure and what we've done this whole year was really part of everything that's been going on um and that's that's it in a nutshell there's so much more when you start putting these things together you just can't even think about everything that you've done so that's it questions comments from the committee mr nunes yeah thank you madam chair thank you dr gifford for this uh yeah to say it's been an interesting year 15 months would be a total understatement uh i think we all go back to that friday in uh march of 2020 when you know everybody shot shut everything down uh it was going to be for a couple of weeks and then it ended up to april 26 or something of that nature and then it was the end of the you know it was the end of the school year and that and i remember being part of the negotiating team with everything that was going on and and such and then you get into the summer time and you know desi you know no disrespect became with all due respect became totally wish-washy you know they wanted one thing today and tomorrow they changed it to the point with the uh the three drafts that they wanted how you were going to do it and they wanted i don't know august 10th type of deal and they never even looked at them uh you know the the the pressure and the the work that our administration here and and and everyone across the commonwealth across the country yeah uh did is uh exemplary and i thank you for for all of that i mean we've i think we've all learned a lot this year i know i have and and i appreciate everything that administration top down you know to the to the custodians to the cafeteria workers to the security guards and everybody else did just to uh to and the students to get through this year and and make it one for the record books maybe but also you know they got through it and you know as was exemplified yesterday so thank you other comments questions mr oliver i'll just uh lead by saying uh thank you for the presentation dr gifford um and yeah there's there's so much i'm sure that you could fill up a hundred slides and there still would be more areas that you you didn't cover um but i will just take this opportunity since this is our last meeting um before school gets out officially because i think our next one's the 28th um just to think you know i i could go on and on and on about accolades and thanks but very simply thank you thank your staff thank the building administrators teachers all the support staff in the uh in the buildings um custodial secretarial right none of this would be possible um what we what we accomplished as a district this year without collaboration and teamwork right at the end of the day that's what it comes down to you needed to lean on each other in order for this to work you needed to support each other in order for this to work um because with if one person didn't follow through it would affect a lot of different other areas so i'll just simply leave it at um you know very simple thank you and thank all the uh the staff and faculty in the public schools you're absolutely right you had to lean on each other to lean on each other um i'll just say we will be circling back next week after you have a time some time to digest all this and the presence there's a lot there there is so thank you very much miss amarillo or miss waite yeah no i um they really said a lot but it's so true i think would we have thought we could have gotten through this had somebody said this is going to happen next year right no way and we did and and i really take pride i appreciate um you know central office dr gifford um mr kylie and and everyone um all the way down like like john said you know sitting at some of this stuff and hearing about on a statewide level i'm really proud of what we've done it hasn't been without hiccups and you know we certainly we we we would grow each time we you know we were able to we would keep growing and doing better but uh we've done really well as a district yes um we're really fortunate that although you know you know people aren't able to hear what they need to hear right we're just human we take in things bits and pieces and we might not hear something the first time it's spoken but we're really lucky as a committee to get all this information in a transparent way you know and it just shines through with your your your charts of all of the activity and although we've received all this all the way through you put it here so clearly for us to kind of dive in and remember when remember exactly so i appreciate that you know we really are lucky uh i don't know that everyone really can appreciate that sitting at home and all of that but um and to have the voices on this committee to speak you know our minds and and be able to sort of ask questions when we need to um i'm just really proud to be part of this committee in this district so thank you welcome i think i have to just you know echo you know certainly what my colleagues have said i mean it i think you know i came in into the middle of this and what a time to come in and i think again like the impression you know if we you know again looking at you know the charts and everything that you provided us with you know we didn't know there was so much that again when we're considering how we're going to plan out august we didn't know what december would look like we didn't know what i mean again we didn't know when we would have vaccines so you know i think you know this is a testament to people who you know really said okay i'm going to work in the moment with the information i have you know and i think that was so so important for everyone to understand i mean we we did listen to science we did you know have guidance you know from the board of health we did listen cdc and we were working with jesse and we're making you know the best calls we could for our kids and we kept our staff safe and we kept our kids safe so i think we have a lot um and again i think the leadership and the choices that were there i was really proud when i talked to other districts who said you know i know my you know friends they were a weekend you know two weeks out and i thought you know really the the choice that we made for the type of hybrid that we came up with as a district i really think it was the best service for our students and i'm so grateful that they're you know back now and me too and i think just sitting yesterday i felt like you know i think in some years you know maybe graduation is another very important check mark but yesterday felt really yeah significant and special i think you know there was a the community of kids coming together they felt you know this the meaning of this and how much you know so it was a beautiful event and again it was testimony to all that you guys have done so so thank you uh echo my colleagues commented i have to laugh miss amarillo said can you imagine if we had known this in march thank goodness we didn't know this last march because i think everyone would have quit if you told us this is what the next 15 months are going to look like we all want to stay close no thank you all right so maybe it was good we only learned a little bit at a time because that's all we could manage but i will agree you know i'm it's been a very difficult year for everyone um for parents for kids for teachers for administrators for all of our staff but i think we've done the best we could and you know i do see um some of my friends around the country whose kids have not been in person at all this year or who are still getting half days of school they've been getting half days of school all year um and you know i'm i am agree we're proud of what we've been able to do so thank you for your leadership um on that and we will come back to this next week um this is mid-cycle so we don't need to do the charts but remind me i'm drawing a blank i don't know why i tried to forget all the evaluations like it's so painful having to do this no offense it's so confusing i know right that i for like my it's almost like childbirth you forget what happened oh that again okay so um i i have no recollection of what we reproduce what we produce for the mid-year is just a letter i think it changed as well yeah yeah you didn't produce anything i think it's basically it it's this information and then a motion by you know approval by us of this report okay which you know she can dr gifford is then able to at the july meeting take those minutes that are approved and attach them to to this paperwork so that she has it in her record i i would think that's pretty much that's that's that's my recommendation you have to do all those nasty documents that is the the actual evaluation yeah that's the actual eval would okay the the power point exactly okay um so that's fine we'll come back to this everyone can look we can ask more questions we'll put that in the agenda for the next meeting um it it it might make sense i don't i mean the last time we did training on evaluation was i know before miss wake came here it was a long time ago if do we want to maybe try to schedule something like that a refresher course i would appreciate it just because again this is early next fall yeah i think that makes sense yeah that was fine because miss amarillo and i went to uh a session if you recall [Music] i know i think everything's covered i didn't think i don't think we had anything formal in-house by masc for quite a while i don't quite i don't quite remember i mean i go i'm thinking like on evaluation unevaluated i think in january we had a meeting with an masc january of 16 and then uh mr news doesn't have any of the same people and o'reilly was this we had a meeting one one night after a snow slump i remember that we did have a training though after that because when dr gifford first got here because i was not around for that so that was the last time maybe i don't know but it's been a while so i think we could do with a refresher yeah yeah we could do with a refresher from masc in the fall in advance of our officials i would appreciate that okay and then we will um we'll put this on the agenda yes gunther we make sure that has an agenda um for next and we'll um we can wrap it up because i mean i think we've even numerous times had made made the comment that you know no disrespect to the superintendent of mr kyle i mean you know it's they're not exemplary because at that point it's like they walking on no again no disrespect they're walking on water and doing they can't improve that type of deal so things of that nature is how this thing works out yep okay um so that's fine we'll we'll come back around to that next week after everyone has had a chance to to look at that further um we're going to come back to the recognition at our next meeting um we had a glitch so we'll we'll fix that for our next meeting just so you know um so that brings us to the superintendent's update and while we're at that why don't we have we haven't we have another matter also that we hadn't anticipated that we'd like to take up as well so why don't we do both those now okay uh other than wrapping up this school year a couple of things the middle school promotion as you know the 15th and 16th i think you know that that will also be on the field the national junior national honor society is at the middle school on the 9th the ninth yeah today's the eighth the ninth yes six o'clock and um i think we recorded that cushman they have been receiving they were feinstein leadership school they were named for their kindness and all of those actions they're taking and um i think we announced that they got the five thousand dollars well they just got another two thousand so justine's just going crazy with all of these wonderful things fantastic uh yeah that's right um we are planning we've asked for teacher mentors people that want to be um mentors to come forward we do need some more so that mentor our new teachers and that will be taking place in june a mentor kind of back to normal doing things that feel normal again and i did provide you you asked for so far what we have for any uh resignations or retirement so you have that and uh we are in the process of course we've been posting and many of our principals have been interviewing folks and shuffling teachers within the building so i think we're in pretty good shape with the candidates that we've been getting and continue to move along with that and with that i will leave it to mr kylie for the volleyball and fitness as he like i said did speak to um a.d um chris fulley thank you dr gifford so yeah we were very excited uh mr chris fully had identified that there was a need on the south coast for a volleyball camp so new bedford has actually run a very successful volleyball camp and they're not doing it we don't know for how long but they're definitely not doing it this year and so where better to run a volleyball camp than than here given you know our success with volleyball in recent years and so rachel lassie uh has put together a plan for a volleyball uh you know a volleyball camp here at dartmouth high school in the gym um and i think we provided you with the document with all of the information uh it will be limited capacity it'll be august 16th to the 20th there'll obviously be some health precautions in place although much of the covert guidance has been lifted for summer camps this will be indoors so um you know there will be precautions in place for sure and uh yeah it's expected to be uh in in high demand from what we understand so um we're hopeful that uh you will grant us approval the cost is 175 dollars per player uh and it's a comprehensive competitive high-end camp for age uh for grades nine through 12 students questions mr oliver thank you madam chair uh yes mr kyle i think this is great i know that my daughter who plays volleyball she was extremely disappointed to hear that the whalers volleyball camp it used to be i don't know if it's still run by coach macedo over there but it was not running this summer so the fact that as soon as she heard i guess it was circulating around that coach lassie was looking to put together a program um i think this will this will sell out rather quickly um based on the you know just the desire and the amount of uh south coast volleyball uh go players so i think this is great mr nunes yeah thank you madam madam quick question is as i look at the registration form and maybe it's just me but uh is there someplace on here that we should have a notation as to whether or not the student has been vaccinated for kova kovet just in case god forbid we have a problem we know what we're up against i'll make a note of that mr nunes and we can uh i just thought i apologize but i just thought of that as we were talking i know they were talking about having a screening you know process each uh you know each day as well but that's a good point i should let you know ahead of time i apologize no no problem at all that's actually a good point uh mr newton where are the public school systems at with you know i know there's been some guidance back and forth and pushed back about whether or not some colleges and universities but as far as in massachusetts i haven't heard anything about whether or not they're um they're allowing it or they're not going to allow schools to just to get that information about whether or not students have been vaccinated no we don't have there's been no guidance no guidance at all no okay thank you mr news another question and again i'm just reading this i've read it god knows how many times and then you look at it and something sticks up down on the bottom the last where it says application procedures it just says make checks payable to and there's nothing there maybe it was supposed to be a two-sided but that's funny that is important yeah yeah you know i mean you know like they can make them payable to me [Laughter] no i'm good thank you other questions or comments sounds great make a motion to approve the request for dig green volleyball at david high school from april 16th my fault august 16th august 20th second promotion by mr nunes a second by mr oliver's there any further discussion hearing none all in favor that's great opposed i think that motion carries unanimously uh do we need to next talk about the strength and conditioning yep just uh when will this go out just to the community is it very soon okay we need a quick turnaround i'm just thinking that there are probably some families who want to try to right yeah there's already a wait list [Laughter] so there's also a proposal um that you had in your packet for summer strength and conditioning program so that would run from june 28 through august 19th three times a week of training uh two to two and a half hours in the mornings and in the evenings there would be professional certified strength coaches who would be running this we would need the assistance of a outside entity to run this program and um so that you know have the ability to actually serve the needs of all the kids so we would be contracting with infinite fitness to do that um mr chris of fully's familiar with them and has had had discussions with them about the operation of the program it would be 120 per student and it would be like i said spread out throughout the summer and offer an opportunity for students to really improve their their fitness or and maintain it throughout questions miss wait so uh mr colleen is this simply for dartmouth students from dartmouth high school or dartmouth yes okay yes and and i would assume it also to follow up it doesn't stand here this is again high school school age students yes and i i'm sorry and a follow-up question is would students be expected to be present for the entire program or is it something that they could kind of jump in you know how would that work i believe the recognition you know the recognition would be that families would have plans over the summer and there would be you know vacations and different things but um you know it it is a long-term planning [Music] process for the kids so the hope is that they'll participate throughout the summer but you know being understanding that they can miss time when they need to that's great thank you miss ambrose you have questions mr newness yeah thank you madam chair uh mr kyle is this going to be here at the high school yes now is this did they run something of this nature in the uh football stadium last summer they did that's what they did yeah it was a little different um but yes yeah we tried to get some you know opportunities for kids to be active last summer too as well uh but we i think this format will is more of a longer term plan for these students than uh what we did last summer and and again if i'm assuming there's some type of health forms and permission forms that have to be filled out this is just a basic outline of the you know what the key points of the program would be good thank you i'm good madam chair mr oliver thank you so last summer mr colley was it done in-house or was it also done by this infinite fitness last time we did do it in-house and we used our own coaches primarily and other staff members to you know to do it i'm just curious as to the reasoning behind going out so outsourcing yeah well we really wanted to focus on professional strength coaches um you know that we found that that was an area of need and you know in-house we don't have that capacity so uh you know these folks are trained in nutrition and fitness for these for these kids so it's it's very reasonable yeah it's more specific whereas we had a variety of different social distanced activities uh last summer this is more focused just towards their personal fit no i think it's great thank you very much that's great that's all i have all right i'll entertain a motion to approve so moved all right so i have a motion for miss uh wait to approve the summer strength and conditioning program is that a second from miss amaral is there any further discussion hearing none all in favor aye aye opposed motion carries unanimously all right so um i do not really have a report um nothing to add does anyone else have any uh anything to report updates mr nunes no just a couple i know are evan talked about a little bit but just congratulations to the students that graduated yesterday and also the middle school graduation that's coming up you know next tuesday and wednesday night everybody please have a safe summer and be careful out there as they as they always say and you know our spring sports are getting into the tournaments the tournament season runs a little a little bit later this year just because of the way the seasons are running type of year so we you know wish them good luck that's all i have thank you uh miss ginther do we see receive any public comments during the meeting we have not thank you anyone else all right so our next meeting is now scheduled for june 28th push that out a week due to some scheduling conflicts so we'll be meeting at 5 00 p.m on the 28th uh we'll be meeting here yes it is still not clear to us whether that meeting will be open to the public or not the governor's executive orders expire on the 15th but he has asked for an extension of some aspects of it but we don't know which aspects he's asked so per normal pandemic operating procedure we have no idea until probably a day or two before um so we will let the public know when we probably when we post the agenda um whether or not they will be able to attend the meeting mill had it he was going to extend it to uh september yeah that's what i had heard yeah i've heard some rumors too i i don't i don't know yeah i mean we'll continue to meet here um the public can continue to provide comment from to miss gentler and we'll just keep doing what we do and until we hear otherwise um all right so um without having said i will entertain a motion to adjourn into executive session to conduct a level three grievance hearing filed by the dartmouth educators association and to hear updates about pending litigation not to adjourn into open session not to return to open session i'll make that motion all right i have a motion by mr nunes do i have a second second second by miss wait roll call please ms ganther yes thank you everybody [Music] there we go
