he's not going to get the football the quarterback's going to follow him number three he's going to get the left side he's going to bowl his way through again and get another 20 yards maybe hopefully he stepped out of bounds after 12. but it's going to be another first down as the starting explorer offense is just picking apart the reserves of columbia's defense it's good to see some of these uh starters though still up cheering on the younger guys that's always something that the coaches express to the to starters i mean these guys are always rooting for you on the sideline the whole game it's good to show the love to the second and third stringers whenever they're in the game first down and 10 ball at the eagles 47 yard line gonna be a handoff to number five he's going to try to get to the outside and it's going to be two eagles that miss and he's going to get to the outside and finally get taken out of bounds but not after a 15-yard gain carter told in on the tackle for the eagles see if i can find any scores around the area you gotta have a tweeter for that man oh i do i got one first down and ten from the 34 yard line 210 remaining in the third quarter doubles to the left side so number 13 in motion they're going to fake the handoff quarterback up the middle he's going to run through one tackle 66 is gonna come off that is a number change tonight but i can tell you that number in 70 riley cleveland came onto the field after three quarters the shocking one here after three quarters freeburg and chester tied at 20.

[Applause] a negative yardage play something we haven't had to say much tonight that's a good thing going to be a fake handoff pass this time out to number 15 from vaguely number 15 is habermill he's going to get to the line of scrimmage [Applause] i can hear all these blue blue jay kids down here and i just sure won't say we fart we start our first game on sunday so you can already hear they're all fired up that's how i that's exactly how i was couldn't wait [Applause] maybe gonna let the play clock run down he's at seven seconds right now he snaps it gonna fake the handoff he's gonna keep it himself get just about to the original line of scrimmage and it's going to bring up a fourth down and 11 with 7 20. remaining in the game and punt team coming back so now you've got to [Music] [Applause] number five [Applause] explorers are going to have their return man at the 20.

and he's going to send a man in for an extra blocker on the right side oh gosh baker's got to get a quick punt off and he does and rick boomer lands at the 31 and it's going to be downed at the 32 with 35 remaining in the ball game and jared last week you give up 389 yards of offense i don't know we may not have even given up not even 38 yeah maybe maybe 40 50 yards i don't know what the coaches said tonight but they did a good job they challenged the players the players came out they they accepted the challenge in that new scheme i think having vaguely and mcconaughey more up um up as linebackers they'll be in the plays more and they'll be making tackles um at three or four yards rather than seven or eight like we saw the first two weeks so that's a change i like to see uh that coach germain made this week and the offense was just rolling the night so coach warner was drawing everything out of his playbook and um i think great overall on both sides of the ball send a motion man number five but number three he's gonna keep it himself try to get to the outside and he is he's gonna lower the shoulder run three two three would be tacklers [Applause] [Music] [Applause] there's nothing you can do about that is starters from marquette are still in and we've got our backup so yeah coach warner talked last night in the uh coach's corner [Applause] timeout marquette but he talked about how in previous weeks he goes well you read for that playbook and you don't know what the pull because nothing's working tonight like you said everything is working yeah he had a that heavy formation was working well early on um got two or three touchdowns out of that with vaguely and mcconaughey you had that formation where you had mcconaughey kind of lined up as a wing back the wink the wing t formation went vaguely under center and the spread offense as horner is known for but that just shows you like coach coach horner just knows he can throw so many different things at you to make it so difficult as a defensive coach and as a defensive player because as a safety you're the one that's running the whole defense and you got to be able to be able to call things out to your team and i guess alt marquette hasn't been able to do that tonight and they really haven't been able to stop any of our offense so great job up front i would say [Applause] coach stump has to go out for these timeouts now as it's his jv team as he's the jv defensive coordinator and the is the man in the booth as we've said before for coach g up top first down in 10 from the eagles 36-yard line 5-10 remaining on the quarry pharmacy clock here at the columbia multi-purpose field ocean man's number five he's going to try to get to the outside his number seven's got a great stall clock great block for number 13.

[Applause] [Music] [Applause] i saw that from a mile away this corner was getting so held [Music] oh [Applause] i know it's not close but like penalties it's crazy how much penalties can like change a game penalties and special teams something that you don't really think about all the time can change the game like that we did miss an extra point tonight which can be crucial in exactly [Applause] first down in six after the holding penalty 355 remaining 13's the motion man it's just going to be a quick quarterback run to the left side good job by the eagles they're forcing it back inside his wife and it's going to be fumbled on the plane it's going to be dog power look like a columbia eagle got on at first come on oh they got it back gonna be recovered by marquette once i got your starters [Applause] so 315 remaining as the explorers now have the ball at the eight yard line 48-7 and week three action [Applause] three minutes remaining so another sideline warning it looks like as that clock is still ticking sideline warning again on alton [Applause] just taking up extra time and mr reeves is down there on the field now so if anything else happens he's right there he's ready he's not gonna have to come running around he comes around to get back on here with the first objection of the marquette coach quarterback's going to look to the left side he's got a man number five in the play great job defense 20.

looks like braxton bosh there right place right time [Applause] number 70 comes off riley claiborne through the universe i can't believe rao took my gatorade man second down in eight from the eight second down goal 144 remaining doubles for the explorers quarterback's just going to run to the right side he's going to push his lineman and try to bounce to the outside he's going to gain five and bring up a third down and goal from before this guy now in the second half running the football pretty hard it's our second stream [Applause] great job by this defense though i mean putting up a fight here making them not score see if we can only let them up uh one touchdown see if we can get two stops here inside the five [Applause] doubles formation gonna send a motion man to number five they're gonna hand it off he's gonna try to get to the edge it'll make one man miss with the stiff arm and he's gonna get in for a touchdown marquette [Applause] that might do it after this p-80s the clock still runs 48-13 as you score [Applause] under 30 seconds now [Applause] this should be the last play of the game right here good snap good hold up and it is good so that will take it to [Applause] 48-13 didn't think they missed the first one and that should do it so that's going to do it the eagles fly high and they get in the wind colin [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] um so that does it here at columbia jared all around a better game here that we've seen the last two weeks yeah i mean from the from the start i mean that our offense was had something in mind tonight or up front they definitely looked a lot faster and they looked like they knew what where they were supposed to be and it just looked like our athletes were able to make a little bit more plays than they were tonight and our defense i think like we said earlier that scheme that we got in now with vaguely and mcconaughey coming up making tackles a little earlier than they're used to i think that that makes a huge difference on the defensive side of the ball but overall i think the offensive defensive line deserves the mvp for tonight vaguely had pretty much a lot of time to throw and mcconaughey was finding any lane and the defensive line was in the backfield almost all night so props to the offensive and defensive line yeah i don't know what coach horner coach jermaine said like we were talking earlier they challenged the players it worked the lineman the the lineman the lineman trying to think of what i'm trying to say here they accepted the challenge there you go they got it done the specialty guys got it done and especially come on coming off a loss like last week against your the team that you've been wanting to play all year and the biggest rivalry game of the year and i mean sometimes a lot of a lot of teams come back and they don't play like this but columbia bounced back and looked really good tonight so hopefully they can carry this in the next week at roxanna and keep it rolling well that's going to do it here just a reminder tune in to the houlton meets coaches corner presented by houlton meats coming to you live from aces wild on thursday night at 6 30 jared will be talking to either coach jermaine or coach horner oh god oh gosh so whether you want to watch it live come watch it live up there or we'll have it on kchs here on youtube and the replays after that other than that that'll do it here from the columbia multi-purpose field as the eagles win it 48-14 get on the win column and we'll see what happens next week whenever we are at roxanna for week 4 football in the first game of the new cahokia conference thank you all for listening and we'll come back to you next week go eagles baby [Applause] [Music] you

thank you [Music] we have a quorum let's stand for the pledge i pledge allegiance [Music] see i was looking at that one okay i believe we're going to start with the student perspective south high school good evening everyone i think you got it mike good evening everyone great to see everyone we're happy to be here tonight to bring you some student perspectives and they're a little bit left over from last spring so last year we all know what kind of year and helter skelter was but we have our group interpretation in the state finals qualify for the state finals for the first time in more than 25 years so yes [Music] and doing so in the digital way in the virtual world makes that accomplishment even greater so i thought it's only appropriate to let them be recognized here in front of you and to share a little bit about their experience girls excellent hi i'm gwen royal i'm a senior at downers grove south i'm one of the vice presidents of the masking gable club i'm in choir and editor-in-chief of the blueprint hi i'm sammy bacara i am in choir and theater and speech and i'm also one of the vice presidents of our masking gabble club hi i'm catherine havawissa i'm a junior i'm in theater speech i'm on the tennis team and in the band so what we're going to talk about is group interpretation it's a 30-minute play but it's highly artistic and it teaches students how to utilize the abstract there are strict rules and we must follow and it's truly unlike any other play that we do at school it's really like the experience of a lifetime i love it so much basically in group interpretation there are still characters but most of it is ensemble working to create a show with just our bodies for example during rgi last season we did the witches and we had to create the look of a house just in our zoom screen so we had to use our arms to make like the roof and like surround our main characters so the whole point is to create a story in a setting using our bodies so last year we were the sectional champions um for years our school has been trying to make it to state and last year not only did we make it to state we were in the top three and we won it was a phenomenal experience we worked our tails off for weeks to be the best gi we could and it really paid off it was probably one of my proudest moments here at dj or there at dgs [Music] while we were sitting in the zoo meeting where they're announcing the sectional top three um the whole cast we are on facetime together just so we can be together in case it didn't go the way we wanted and so we never really actually thought that we would do that well because we nev we didn't expect the competition like what the competition was going to be like this year and um it was so fun to be able to hear our names get called us first all together on the phone and i couldn't even imagine what it would have been like if we were actually like all together in person but it was so fun um like sammy said we were all on facetime and actually they only call the top three so the second we heard the third school called and it wasn't south we kind of all just went like oh well good job guys it was fun second place they called we were like whatever i think somebody actually left the zoom call but then we heard we heard djs called for first place we all got excited and the second the award ceremony was over we all ran on to our own zoom to all talk with our coach as well so uh we came in fifth at state but we came in first for zoom gi's which was super cool all the other gi's that came ahead of us were in person um it was so cool i mean we went to mr blum who was our director and he was like i think that you won basically we had some members of our cast who actually like got their uh their state t-shirts that had number one zoom gi in the state on the back of it it was super fun yeah and that day we were actually all together in a different cast member's backyard so we had like a little party just to celebrate what we had done and it was fun because we were hanging out together we had the zoom of like the whole state like ceremony on in the garage and we all went on together and we were just watching the awards together and then they didn't actually announce like anything below third third so we got to see our name on screen and we were like oh we got fifth and then we like realized that we were the top zoom gi and it was super fun just being like surrounded by all our best friends and experiencing that together being fifth and state was definitely cool but what they do at these state tournaments is you have the main round where everybody goes and then the top ones for each round make it to the final round so the night before if any of you have had the pleasure of meeting mr chris blum the director of this he has a flair for the theatrics so we get this very ominous email saying we need to meet and it's really late we get on this zoom call and he's just talking and the sad tone like yeah it was really good we worked together and all of a sudden he goes we made it to state finals and the second we heard that we started planning a get together in a cast member's backyard to watch the final round together so it was really cool just to make it to the final round so like mr schwartz was saying it was a lot different this year because it was on zoom so although the majority of our rehearsals and our performances weren't together it was probably one of the tightest knit cats casts that i've ever been a part of i cannot wait for it to happen in person this year i can't wait but it's gonna like to see what it's gonna look like in person it's gonna be great yeah and it's safe to say that it was really hard putting on a show over zoom but it was really entirely worth it all of us now we all have like this shared experience that will never like break us apart because it was so different from anything else that happened last year and we were all extremely positive even though there were some like ups and downs where some of us just didn't want to be there that day because it was a heart particularly hard day it was still amazing to experience and there were just hours spent figuring out how to make one scene work or what costume would show up best on camera because we weren't really allowed to do like costumes um but in the end the production was amazing and now i have relationships with the cast it's just so valuable and this year the cast is basically going to be the same with a couple editions so it's going to be fun just to be able to do it all over again yeah working online was definitely tough i think we can all agree that everything online seemed kind of optional but it was really cool to be with people that wanted to be there to audition you had to reach out to the coach and it's everybody that was happy to be working online just happy to be performing something all um do you guys have any questions i had i had one so did when you what you what you competed with did you do it live and you what or did you film it and get to kind of like unzoom and kind of edit it a little bit and then submit it because it's so hard to do it i can't even imagine it so we were allowed to break up scenes so we recorded three separate chunks of the 30 minute play but we weren't really allowed to edit it we could crop the beginning and the end but we weren't allowed to like add sound or move videos around it was pretty much raw footage but we didn't do it live some schools did it live we chose not to take that route because it was working pretty well for us and we want to keep as much distance as possible so we would come into the school and record in like individual classrooms so we all had like the same background and the same like wifi and everything and then we'd do that do it like that that is really cool so much you know we we're still living with so many negative things right from last year it's just so awesome to hear you know just your the smiles on your faces i can see them through the mass you know the excitement and i mean it just whenever i hear if somebody comes to me and says last year was a lost year i just want to send them to you you know um because it wasn't there were great things that happened and you're you're you're just here to share one of those things so congratulations well done yeah congratulations [Applause] okay moving on to student board members questions and comments oh yes i don't remember who went first last time i don't remember who went first either hello way down there you guys can fight it out yeah i'll go first so a lot has gone on at south since i've last updated the board since then school has started and everything's back in full swing the drama department is working hard to put on four productions before the end of the first semester the freshman play which this year is called the masked freshman will be performed this friday at 7 pm the fall play this year is laughing stock the winter play will be the rose and the rhine and the children's play is schoolhouse rock i know i personally can't wait to see these productions and all the hard work that the cast and the crew put in especially those girls they're really close friends of mine this past saturday was the inauguration event at south and from what i've heard and went well the community loved seeing the new additions to south and the students and faculty members love showing off the school the pe department will be putting on a few events in the next couple weeks the first is actually taking place tomorrow and it's going to be a blood drive so any mustang who is 16 or older is eligible to donate and help save lives and the second which i know jade will also talk about is our young hearts for life heart screenings this organization provides free heart screenings for students and helps identify students who are at risk for sudden cardiac death and they've done really great you're recommended to do it every two years so north and south bring them in every two years they just screen all the students who parent whose parents have allowed them to the sports are going on our girls and boys golf team are doing really well both cross-country teams are performing really well all their meets and they're placing in the top five and individuals in the top ten the swim and dive team for the girls has been killing it and it's been really nice to have somewhat normal high school experience again i know everyone's been really excited to be back in the building okay hi uh here at north since i've last been here we've also been up to a lot of things including rfl plays as well we we recently had the revenge of the space pandas which was a really great play performed by our theater and i know i know a lot of people enjoyed it especially the little ones it was their target audience and i'm so glad that it went so well in the next couple of weeks they are working on their next play it's called flight spirit and it's going to be at the end of september and beginning of october which i'm very excited about to go watch and go support on the other side of our fine arts we also have our trojan marching band they've been killing it at half times but they've also been killing it at the university of illinois which they went to a couple weeks ago to perform there i heard it started drizzling but that couldn't stop them they had a great time and i'm so glad our sports have also been doing so well like like south has we're undefeated in the stands and on the field which is very nice all our teams have been doing great and the energy being brought back to the building back to the stands has been great seeing all the familiar faces and being able to uh wear your themes for that game and being able to wear the trojan wear and your spirit wear and wear purple and isn't something that i think a lot of us have missed in this past year being able to share that with others and i'm so glad that we have that back in other news we also have our coffee shop it's brand new it's open i went this morning it's very nice i do recommend that people go and try it out it is unnamed still but we will soon be naming it since we soon have our inauguration here at north i know south was last week weekend and ours is on september 25th we'll be having a ceremony at 9am which is very exciting and i do recommend that anyone in the community who wants to go see it and want to come see our new spaces be free be welcome to come and explore the new north which is very exciting like scarlett touched on we will be also hosting the young hearts for life this october 7th all students whose parents authorize it will be allowed to test for that and ecg testing like scarlet said is recommended every two years i had it two years ago and i think that anyone who has the opportunity to do it should do it because this organization up to date has diagnosed almost 3 000 students with heart abnormalities and saved their lives probably so i really recommend that any person who is eligible to do it should do it um something that speaks more to the culture of our school our positivity north clips are making a comeback this year which is very exciting so any student who has been doing exceptional and being a leader and being kind to others can get nominated by their teachers to receive this special honor and i think that speaks so much to our students because we have this culture we're all so kind together even after these hard times so i'm really glad that i get to go to a school like this and in terms for our future leaders nhs applications are open for our current juniors and i'm so excited that even when i graduate i know we're going to be leaving some great leaders here at north and at south so that's really it for north end moment thank you thank you thank you okay we'll move on to uh before we move on to the reception visitors i just wanted to uh say that if you if you have not if for those people who went to the south um ribbon ceremony it was just so lovely it was just a lovely morning it was just so well done and thank you to all all the members of administration and staff put that together and then north will be a week from this saturday nine o'clock here but very it was just lovely to walk around and see the new space and it was just just well planned out and thank you very much to everybody who participated in that okay we're going to move on to reception visitors unless you had something else no i have nothing else to report tonight this is an opportunity for audience members to address the board on any topic pertaining to community high school district 99 is there anybody who'd like to address the board hearing none uh we're going to have we need a motion we're going to go into closed session there wasn't anything online oh we don't have online upcoming meetings just to point them out we have a policy committee meeting this week uh 8 am at the asc then next week the board meeting is a little odd because we passed a resolution to have the budget hearing at the asc but because of the rise in the delta variant in covit we've decided to move to a larger space for the larger board meeting so we'll have just the board a couple of administrators julie of course and anybody who wishes to address the board about the budget at the asc at 6 30.

afternoon it's a beautiful afternoon and it's very nice of you to spend it with us at the bartholomew consolidated school corporation one of our regular school board meetings here in the administration building so thank you all for being with us we usually start our meetings with reflections from one of our colleagues and this evening it is mr pat bryant thank you madam president as i stated before this is not a reflection but more of a public service request i work at bethune county public library and i want to thank the art council for putting history on our plaza this year rather than a thousand pounds or more of dirt and flowers that nobody really knew the name of if you enter into the front off the fifth street you'll walk through a maze a little bit of a maze of history reference to columbus off on the left hand side you will see the arch the arch was made by mr henry moore this is also a situation where that arch is standing is that where the first button county public library stood the stone stood there even though we are 50 years old we have a lot of up-to-date monitoring stuff that people will like to see we have people coming around from all over the world reference to seeing the buildings here in bethune county and i am so proud that i'm working at one of those buildings that they come to see if you enter you're going to be greeted by some of our employees and they're going to tell you welcome to bulletinology county public library how are you today and what can we greet you with or help you with if you continue on past the front desk you walk into the reference department before you turn into the reference for me turn around and look towards the church across the street which is first first street a christian church you will see that through the big glass there that the arch of the cross across the street is going to be symmetrically right in line with the glass and across the stones there's 12 stones which stands for the 12 apostles there's a lot of things that people look at and don't even realize even those who was born here in bethany county if you go into the reference department you have some people that's going to greet you that's going to help you find books maps addresses if you need to these are people that are really good at their job and it is fun just to sit and watch them help people get where they need to go we also have computers that people can sit down and use those computers all of this is free all of this is for people of bethany county and i'm surprised the amount of people that don't take the opportunity to do this downstairs we have a children's apartment in the children's department you're going to find all kinds of toys books and you have again some people that's going to greet you we have a situation of different projects different exhibits at the present time we have a civil rights reserve we also have 911 the civil war exhibit that is there so all of these things are free and people are not taking advantage of them it's funny to me because we also have a situation of different programs that goes on we have programs for people who like to do yoga we have programs for yoga as far as kids is concerned we have a program where kids can come in and read to one of our dogs all of this is free and these are people that really truly love serving the public because if they didn't it wouldn't be in that building that's for sure so i'm inviting you i'm requesting i'm begging please come down to the diamond county public library and see what we have to offer thank you thank you very much i've been there many times all right if you will and are able if you please stand and join us in the pledge of allegiance of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with [Music] okay this takes a little while to get me organized we're all here all seven of our board of trustees members are here so we certainly have a quorum and i'll call this meeting to order as we share here on the slide and on the [Music] behind us our mission and our vision which guide the work of our school board on each and every meeting we also have listed here our high expectation objectives again with more detail and more focus on our goals and objectives of our work so just that you're reminded what guides us each meeting all right i'm excited about this one so our first presentation i'm going to turn to mr jensen and mr johnson to tell us about the high school design team and their exhibit columbus presentation we're really excited to have this group here tonight it was pretty fascinating because one of the things we've heard several meetings is this has been one of the exhibits that has been so highly regarded by visiting people as well as visiting architects and this was done by our students at c4 so with that i'm going to turn over to mr johnson and his wonderful talented team okay they're ready to go all right i would just like to say and start off uh thanks for having us this is a great opportunity to show our work over the past year over the course of the last year we've dug very deep into the prompt that we were given and we spent a lot of hard work and a lot of time getting to really sink our teeth into something that honestly not a lot of high school students get to experience and get to work on in high school over the summer i was part of a summer program for architecture and i was describing my process and like what i was doing for that summer and why i was occasionally missing some sessions but besides the point they were all very intrigued that this is something that high schoolers can do and we're very lucky in columbus to have c4 as such an outlet to provide opportunities for us so this is our 2021 project tunnel vision it documents the architectural history of columbus and the significance of several buildings that are in columbus it documents their significance like i said and i'll pass it on to the next person okay so um can you guys hear me um so do you do me a favor could you introduce yourself so that we we know who we're reading my name is ishaan mehta and i'm a senior at columbus north high school thank you my name is grishma pitkar and i am a sophomore at columbus north high school hello my name is miguel martinez i am a senior at columbus north high school my name is narratis and i'm a senior at csa new tech i'm owen hebel and i'm a junior and at east awesome thank you okay so one of the first few steps of this entire process was brainstorming so over the first few weeks of school we architecture students from the c4 architecture program at columbus north gathered to brainstorm some ideas to reflect on the topic that was given to us for exhibit columbus 2020 which was new middles so as you can see on the bottom there these were some of our first ideas that we developed as a team and after a few more sessions of meeting together we developed on the top some of the key ideas that would later influence our project so like ishan said our project is a geodesic tunnel which highlights all of the major architectural buildings throughout columbus and um we wanted to do this to educate people from columbus and outsiders coming in about columbus as a city and why it is so important this right here was an initial render that we proposed and submitted to the exhibit columbus foundation and later on you'll see our process in developing it so how we choose what building we would use we kind of started at the visitors centers pan flip and from there we kind of crossed off any buildings we thought that was not needed but then also consolidated some buildings like the five fire stations that were on the pam flip and our triangles look like this and we basically use this template with the qr code and the vector image of the building the year and then the name of the building and how we got the vector image was really finding an image of the building itself either by using the public library's resources mr johnson's like photos he had in his files and also going there and taking a photo of it ourselves if we couldn't really find a good photo and we really wanted to incorporate any key aspects of each building for example like the first christian church has the key aspect of the clock tower so we made sure to include it into the triangle every building represented in our exhibit has two videos about it one in english and one in spanish it took about three months to script every single video in both english and spanish and three an additional three and a half months to fully script everything each of the spanish videos was recorded by one of our native speakers that we had on our team so one of the uh ideas that we drew from our prompt was the idea of the future of the middle city which was a big aspect of the project itself so miguel and i we took upon the task of developing a concept for the future of columbus what columbus can become as inspired by the past so we developed a minute and a half animation over this this was our final shot which represents the very start of modern architecture in columbus which is so crucial and so important to columbus's name as an architectural landmark and at the very end was a building that we developed completely new we decided that it would be a great idea to take a look at architects who were huge in the modern landscape that never ended up coming to columbus this is specifically influenced by architect paul rudolph and his works and these ideas carried on throughout the entire process of developing this concept of future columbus um so during this whole entire process that hashem had sean and i that we went through we had a bit of trouble in the beginning you know we're trying to figure out how the future was going to be because that is such a vast question and it's really hard to answer with um all the things that go on with uh time and so we had actually uh brainstormed a few ideas and gone through a lot of mistakes and everything like that but we decided that we wanted to keep the roots throughout columbus and decided that you know that some things will change and some things we will keep and we never know what the future will hold we decided that it was very important to obviously keep the landmarks as we couldn't really touch those obviously but we also decided to reach out to the community and we actually put out a survey for um high schoolers and adults to take and we also surveyed elementary school classrooms to find out what their ideas would be for the future because those elementary school students be it that they might not be as much younger than us but they will still be the future so we took their ideas and we tried to incorporate them throughout our concept for the future but uh yeah as miguel said no one knows what the future will hold this is only our interpretation of it the tunnel itself was actually a lot harder than i thought it would be to build having the conduit was not flexible at all but starting from the bottom we really needed a lot of hands putting the condom together and putting the screws through and as we built upwards at the very top of the tunnel it got 10 times harder and we needed a lot more hands pushing and pulling separate parts of the tunnel allowing us to put the screw through building the tunnel itself and the base okay this the structural included over 130 triangles in total main area probably f15 plastic about half of them were blue and the other half were green every other blue triangle had engraving on the building we use a cnc machine for and along with the engraving there's also a qr code with links to the above mentioned videos the idea of the blue triangles came from the importance of the rivers in columbus and we made sure that it create created a linear form that matched the linear form of the genetic tunnel that we used which was a key thematic element of our project and that is filled in by the space of the green triangles if you go take a look you'll immediately recognize the pattern of the blue triangles forming the snake of a river so we wanted to make sure that each triangle had a specific spot so that we could create a timeline that would start from some of the oldest architectural buildings to some of the newest as ishan said to what would be our vision of the future so as far as the installation goes we wanted to make sure that it was a efficient process so we used zip ties and attached them to the frame of the tunnel and all this project has been very impactful to me to be able to see like the design process from beginning to end and it's been very rewarding to see many people use it not just people around columbus but like students at central middle school reading ssr under it so it's just been rewarding to see people use it fully yeah to add on to that i would just like to say that for me it was a really different experience because i had never done anything like this before and i also got to do a lot of hands-on work which i also enjoyed so um so i'm actually from ohio and i came here about eight years ago and so you know i came here with a different view on architecture and everything like that and this was a something that i wanted to pursue um with you know building things and designing them and i definitely felt like this whole experience was a very educational experience and it truly taught me on my views and worships in architecture and what i want to do it taught me how to work closely with friends and also peers during this whole entire process working on this project as a lead with the scripting and the videos has taught me many things like how to work with a small group of people to get a quality product out in a timely manner while still adhering to these strict timetables which is an increasingly important part of the modern workspace it also gave me newfound respect for the exhibit cannabis program i would say overall this is something that none of us will ever forget even when we get deep into our careers this will still be a highlight as it is for so many of the other wonderful designers that were able to participate this was something that this is something that we'll all share together forever um overall the process what we hope to that it brings to columbus is a sense of renewed passion and uh love for the architecture that we have we hope that it's not being taken for granted as it may seem on a day-to-day basis but what we have in columbus is truly special and again we like to say thanks to the c4 program and dr hack over there thanks and yeah this project for us was unexpected i certainly didn't think that this would be something i'd do and it's going to be unforgettable for all of us so just like columbus unexpected unforgettable thank you oh yeah so could you clarify do i understand that each qr code has a video in english and spanish oh my gosh you guys are awesome okay um so during this whole entire thing with taking a video and you know they're both educational and you know both of them are in english and spanish we actually only had two spanish speakers for this whole entire thing which included myself and someone else which was not fun at times because trying to work on your work and trying to help out others it's definitely hard but we got it done but the english part you most of you will understand and i hope you guys enjoy it in total i believe we recorded edited and scripted about 102 videos overall um but yeah so this mask is hiding major wonder just [Laughter] wow all right so go ahead please what were some of the other concepts you guys came up with you're brainstorming uh words and and that was kind of drawing me in what what other ideas so some of the other concepts that we came up with were kind of like advancement past versus future that you kind of can see um reflecting on our his timeline throughout columbus um and just indigenous design and so on i think um in the intro class they didn't speak as much on like the actual structural ideas but in the advanced class we discussed perhaps taking building methods used by indigenous tribes local to our specific area in columbus i think there were ideas turned around to incorporate the gdc tunnel idea in a different manner i know that initially we had also talked about doing an actual circular dome with the same triangle concept but in the end this one out as it was um easier to engage with and so much easier to build as well so so i have to tell you my um my daughter turned seven on the day that exhibit columbus opened so i brought a ton of seven-year-old girls in a big minivan and we went downtown and this was the highlight for them they spent the most time in there each of them asked for a phone they were super engaged it was shaded i mean that was really smart for when that came out you know provided a little shade so it was just really smart um we spent a lot of time there it was all very enjoyable it was it was probably my favorite exhibit so just really remarkable wonderful other questions i have something to add about that so we actually wanted it to be both educational and a very good experience for both all ages that's the one thing that we had actually um was scared about that you know being useful and everything like that you know you have a harder attention span to things and so we were trying to reach all the audiences both older and newer with the technology use which a lot of newer people liked but then it was still easy and practical for a lot of other people that um have a hard technological experience yes mr stenner thanks for coming tonight and thanks for your work on the project i there's five of you here and and mr johnson how many people got to be involved in the project overall from the very beginning i think over the entire course the project it ended up being about 60 kids overall who touched the project in a collaborative sub uh i don't know 60 kids overall worked on the project at various times but obviously there were a few key leaders five of them are here but some of them obviously graduated uh chase jones brodie coppis are two of the uh and angie hernandez are three of the name people who spent a lot of time working on the product and of course our building trades class they put in a lot of work andrew krueger from there spent a lot of time over the summer coming in and helping us put this together that's great thank you so i i love that it models so you've said building trades your architect class i can't even fathom all the skills that are associated with that but then also the um the artwork the photography and the history that you had to do and then synthesizing all of that into these short videos i've i think the the complexity and the integration of the project is most impressive i don't know if and i assume out of 60 you know you were able to find the individuals that that was their strengths and our interests but i wonder if you want to elaborate on that uh yeah so not only was it uh the architecture and building crews class that worked on this we also had help from the graphic design class for the qr codes we had a student her name was caitlin gibson she actually designed these shirts for us nice and she formatted the qr codes that we could send them off to tony london to get them printed so she was an essential part in getting this made as well so big shout out to her but yeah we actually did all the synthesizing early on in the project we put all of the information together we had a team specifically dedicated to writing the scripts and editing the videos and owen here was the one that was mainly in charge of uh putting the audio or collecting the audio um and then we kind of broke off into four distinct groups the future group the vector image and triangle group the editing group and the uh audio group so overall we kind of put all that together we knew what we were working towards and we knew that it would all come together in the end we're very happy with how it turned out and all that work was put together as you should be so learning that collaboration and teamwork is indispensable i can say are there other comments or questions i could talk to you all night that we have other things to do any other great job i'll just comment doctor on um i'm sure we're darren darren johnson so if you didn't see darren's school board members helped lead this project did a great job the students right there was awesome dr hack with c4 i think it was referenced too already so thank you c4 program and darren for their hard work thanks kids for the awesome jobs that go down this is the second or third time i've seen a presentation from you or some kind of recognition but outstanding outstanding work on your behalf and i think you did a nice job doctor shed of synthesizing all the things they had to bring together to make this work mr bryant started off with the psa public service announcement so i guess hours mine would be to make sure you stop by and see the exhibit that the students have put together there right in front of central middle school so easily accessible and check it out yes thank you for representing us so well make us all very proud thank you all right i'll jump into you won't beat that no i don't know i will not even try and i'll be as brief as i possibly can my graphics aren't very good and everything else compared to to that so just a quick update on the numbers that we have which we try to keep you updated from board meeting to board meeting those are the two graphics of our state from both the cdc and the department of health and where we would be as a as a state and then from the token 19 task force they put these numbers up every monday and thursday this was actually thursday's number so jenna i don't know if you saw but today's numbers were not but 72 or where they were at the end of last week in terms of the new positive cases in one day hospitalizations around 35 but those again adjust from day to day um and then our own internal numbers we always share with you as well and just reminded you reminding you that last year in our first quarter with fall break we had 29 positive test cases we went to e-learning on november the 9th which was 106 positive test cases as i've said before most of the operational not only the 36 staff members out because of testing positive but the many close contacts we had and then just creating some challenges with that the first 25 days of this year so i actually get into 26 because those numbers so we're updated at the end of the day today 326 positive test cases that is 290 students and 36 staff members so you can see the proportion even from the staff members piece we've we've had the same number of staff members as we did the first quarter but the number of students has dramatically increased the close contacts now over 1600 approaching 1700 and 876 students also sent home perhaps pending it have a pending test they would be symptomatic with symptoms similar to covet 19.

um i call this meeting to order um can we have the roll call yes here present tony peregini perry genie okay and harrigan here you have a quorum um okay can we rise for the pledge do we have it no that's good enough we have jesus to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all thank you everybody for being here our first curriculum meeting of the wow 2021-2022 school year um i'm going to open the meeting with public comment do we have any no public comment from the audience and no emails received okay thank you um okay next item on the agenda is a review of the minutes of the june 14 2021 meeting faith yes sir jack just uh i'm sorry i was muted earlier i just wanted to say uh as far as modifying the agenda you have to make that motion now robber rules are ordering for you so we don't get in trouble okay thank you um all right we it's been brought to our attention that item 3b um needs to be moved agenda or repositioned into the agenda as new business um do i hear a motion to move that item sophie right yes tony go what so can i make the motion i'm sorry yes so i move that we create a new item item five uh item three actually we need to make uh item for new business and move item 3a to item 500 new business and you know let's take a step back four should be new business and we move three b to item four and item five would be adjourned okay ann was that a second yeah yay thank you all in favor aye aye thank you so much okay um item two uh review of the minutes of the june 14th meeting you've all had a chance to review are there any additions corrections or changes minutes i actually have something and so i reviewed the minutes and i was not there at that meeting um but i noticed that it said that you had uh tabled the minute from may 10th meeting and so i was wondering if we're going to um these items are the tabled minutes are not on the agenda and the motion or the um item agenda is a review of the minutes of the june 14 2021 meeting and that's what we'll act on so we'll need to add this to the next agenda to prove it [Music] minutes great okay and any additions we're going to move that to the next meeting yes um okay um all right we'll hear a motion to approve the minutes for the june 14th i move through the minutes of june okay do i hear a second okay all in favor okay thank you okay um item three is new business the flexibilities formally 3b of the flexibilities for implementing the connecticut guidelines for educator evaluations uh 2017 for the 2021-2022 school year so uh i think we're going to start with a the curriculum writing institute and i think flexibility is become number four under a new business okay so we're going to build agenda so we're on 3a the curriculum writing lesson too yes thank you okay um 3a uh informational item curriculum institute okay so thank you so much i um i know that some of you may have heard a little bit about the curriculum writing institute from our convocation i wanted to share since i had spoken with a couple of you i think we even had a board meeting on the day that i was headed over there and we had a wonderful turnout for our field running institute of over 80 educators k through 12 across the district it's well attended and more importantly the work that came out of that was extremely beneficial we were able to get a lot of curriculum writing done and teachers were able to work together collaboratively across grade levels and sometimes even across subject areas so i wanted to share this with you all being that you're like the cheerleaders behind the scenes for current kills and i wanted to show you um a little video that uh for mike finally gratefully thankfully put together for us so i'm going to go ahead and share my screen [Music] yes all right wow [Music] i would say it was a wonderful opportunity to i would describe the writing institute as an opportunity for teachers um across the district to have some pd on how to make authentic learning tasks we had time for a pd in the morning and followed by lots of collab time with gray levels to create a unit um that is updated for our curriculum it gives us a whole chunk of time where we devote hours just working on a unit unit as opposed to working individually at my home computer or working in my classroom having an hour on a tuesday afternoon and then the next time i worked on curriculum writing i would have to re-acclimate myself to think where did i leave off what i still have to do this is so beneficial one thing i learned i learned curriculum writing institute isn't so much so much it's something that's been solidified beginning point in which we can then look at other units in the future and know that there will be consistency across the grade level and throughout the district as well as making connections to grade 2 teachers in other buildings my biggest takeaway from the curriculum writing writing too is really really look at our curriculum and try and try and get changes and adjustments to better next year the most important things to take away from this experience is that we have time to work together and for years we've been asking for instruction on how to create curriculum and this gave us that opportunity and it's been awesome just having having um um a great great amount of teachers teachers that are from different different different subject areas and just bouncing ideas back and forth between people that you don't have a chance to see very often seeing everyone being with everyone and running ideas back and forth day-to-day with different people has really worked well also you work better with a balanced practice and you get a t-shirt [Music] you might have about the institute marlene could you repeat that we did not hear yes you know what i'm also going to grab the microphone up here because hopefully that will help us out so faith i was saying that if you have any questions about the curriculum writing institute we'd be happy to answer those i'm going to confess i don't know is it possible the microphone was on because there was a lot of reverberation oh you didn't hear it very well no we heard it but it was a double echo i think it was the microphone might have been picking up at the same time too but right now you're loud and clear so i think we're good yes thank you am i too loud am i blowing you away no no you're good thank you well i'm sorry about that i know tony watched that for for um that was his second time but faith i'm also happy to share that with you so that you can check it out without such bad sound quality great thank you um i i don't have any questions i don't know if ann or tony does but ann yeah so um would you say that like the biggest benefit of that curriculum writing institute was um the looking at curriculum from grade to grade and having some of that cohesiveness involved or was it more um update curriculum or how would you describe sort of i think the big takeaways from that were different for different people i think that the teachers really appreciated the time to collaborate as a group on a project i think from a district perspective and probably from the teachers as well it was quality time to update curriculum i think from a district perspective being that we're focused on acceleration as a strategy for learning that we really are focused on deep and engaging learning tasks and so this group was given um real good coaching and instruction around starting with an authentic real world task making sure it's attached to standards and then backwards planning so we definitely use that on you know backwards design planning to do this the collaboration was key the time the fact that they were trained in how to write curriculum came through and was a need that i had heard you know for the last couple years that i've been around and wanted to give them that training and then from my perspective i've talked with this committee about having a library of our curriculum that's easily accessible and so that was a giant step forward of having that all in one place so that was another benefit um the last one is the feedback so they did it all together so we were able to provide teachers with feedback so they can go back revise put those changes in and then we sort of take it and it's a living breathing document but we've still got it in the curriculum library now thank you i've heard good really good things from a couple of teachers out there who attended like you said we just appreciate being able to work with their colleagues yeah yeah and also there's there's something to have that time set aside just to work on that one thing yeah you know they started with you know nothing on the paper and then at the end of that week they had done so much work it was great to see it was great to work with them and you could see how many people attended because they'll have those red t-shirts on at convocation so it was nice very nice to see the question so i know one of the topics was acceleration and getting the teachers geared to update the curriculum around that is there going to be an opportunity to uh have another curriculum to check in somewhere maybe mid-year to see how that's going and adjust curriculum content depending on how acceleration's working for various teachers or is this just a one-time um kickoff or to be more sessions i would say definitely it was a kickoff and it's something that i'd like to replicate again next june as well and what we've had the checkpoints along the way are that they received feedback over the summer and then at that august professional development day each department chair each team member who was present shared that with the rest of their larger department or their grade level or their school so now that's being put in place and we'll have whether it's grade level meetings or department meetings or subject area meetings along the way to check in and see how that's going great thank you great okay thank you um next item is the um sba assessment data yes so i believe in your packets you have a link to at least some of the information so i will share that with you first nope [Music] hang on my eyes are no good from this distance so i'm going to show share it one more okay all right how's that looking from your end tony and uh faith it looks good i have my own copy too so i'm good if you don't want to share yeah great great okay so we're looking at our 2021 smarter balanced ela math and ngss science data and we had gotten school districts get this information over the summer it is embargoed until a certain point this year they released batches of it so what you're looking at here is our english language arts percentages of students who achieved bands one two three and four and then you have those her at or above goal which is that combination of bands three and four and then you also have at the bottom the district three through eight percentage at or above goal and what you can see there is how we've done as compared to if anyone in the back here wants it may be a little tricky to see you may want to look and see how we did compared to a non-covered year so this is just our district and you could see where we were in 1516 16 17 17 18 18 19.

once we're done with that presentation and any reception of visitors regarding the budget hearing we will then wrap up there take a short recess to move over to south and then i would imagine somewhere around 7 or 7 15 we'll pick up the board meeting like we traditionally would have a board meeting at south high and go on from there so anybody who wishes to come and address the see the budget presentation address the board strictly about the budget should go to the asc at 6 30.

and then just the asterisk that's in there is that 85 of our close contacts have later tested positive which is around 5.1 percent and that that number is not large of course and 90 i mean 95 percent have not uh and returned to us but we look at last year's numbers it was less than one percent of the students uh who were close contacts then tested positive so going from less than one percent to 5.1 percent at least at this current time so those are the numbers that we have right now i do not have any other specific recommendations for you on our mitigation strategies at at this point yes one question [Music] so one of our issues when we went to eu learning was staffing and it was 36 and we're at 36 now so is there something different about the distribution of our staff who have the positive tests we just don't have the same number of staff absent so although that's 36 staff members that were positive by that time they were not or the accumulation of positive cases at that moment the number of close contacts at that moment and the number of people also out because of symptoms of staff at that moment created the operational issues that that's not the case here less close contacts of staff members less symptomatic people from a staff member standpoint so that number although the same as it was in november of last year has not created operational issues to the to the extent that they would create an e-learning situation or whatever at this point in regards to e-learning and looking at that as a as a possibility which is not something we want to go to we don't want to have to go to the hybrid model or anything we want to keep our students in person in class if we would have to make an adjustment we would start small in terms of looking at a classroom first or maybe if there was a certain number of students out in a grade level or a hallway uh looking at that and then a school building before we would look at the entire school corporation and i think you're all aware of the different school corporations who have either had school buildings or the entire school corporation close at some point already this school year much earlier than last year in terms of those kinds of situations so we're trying to try to avoid that at all costs at this point in time okay are there other questions people have yeah i've got a couple sure so in light of the you know in regards to the numbers that are up there dr roberts has there um has there been any discussion or consideration at all with the governor's new directives about um those kids identified as a close contact um you know the the contact procedure continues on and you know parents guardians notified and and given you know the option to keep an eye on them you know and quarantine if they so choose or if their child remains asymptomatic to go ahead and send them to school yeah daily discussion around that mr grimes so so in depth and thorough in terms of of taking a look at what the governor's executive order tended to include so just clarification for everybody's sake in terms of the governor's executive order gave the department of health commissioner the authority then to adapt or or or adjust the quarantine guidelines as as needed and so she has indicated that close contacts can be allowed to stay in school um if in certain settings and so if that's within this the classroom so classroom only those close contacts if everybody is masked properly so every single person in that classroom uh and three feet or greater um and so that's that's something that we take a look at our our challenge was as we are looking at the numbers that we have and uh the quarantining of closed contacts has been a mitigation strategy in place now for quite some time is that with increasing numbers so our numbers continue to increase we're not on on the other side of things yet in terms of going the other direction and with the percentage of individuals that are close contacts now testing positive again 5.1 percent that's a 500 increase versus what we had last year um that it didn't seem at this moment the right time to take advantage of that flexibility we appreciate that flexibility it's it's a good thing that that the governor the department of health has taken a look at that and said here are some options to consider but it is flexibility it's not a mandate from the from the governor's office and and we are we will daily take a look at that flexibility to see how we can um how we can utilize it as we go forward but just the numbers at this point in time has has put us on hold in terms of all mitigation strategies and not not looking to change those at this time okay i i do know that i i think maybe um down south floyd new albany that area i know they've taken advantage of it you well i don't know if that's the right terminology but yeah you know they are offering parents the option of kids who have been identified as close contacts and i think that's probably only been the beginning of two weeks was that yeah so it would be the the governor's order came out two weeks on wednesday so it will be two weeks ago on wednesday so most corporations i think um there were some that reacted immediately others said we're going to chew on this for a minute and see what the situations are and what opportunities we have and as you mentioned school corporations maybe like floyd and others have started to make that decision so i don't know what their numbers are i don't know what their you know situation is in terms of internally or even how many close contacts that they had that was impacting but it is certainly and i think your terminology was right taking advantage of that is is something that does get students back to school that otherwise would be quarantined because of the close contact tracing so you would say that is something to keep that that we'll continue to keep in mind at least yes definitely yes because i just you know think about the hardships on parents arguably um you know i don't know what teachers in this corporation and i you know as a teacher myself it's it's kids that go on quarantine and it's it's it's painful to see them go home for a number of days and oftentimes not do much of anything and come back and start it uh ground zero and and i realize yeah like you said the one percent to five percent so yeah um did the mandate allow for a middle ground so perhaps you still quarantine but you reduce the amount of quarantine time to allow you know period for maybe symptoms to you know to show up really good question this one and i don't know that that i'm going to say yes because by going to zero on the number of days of quarantine when previously the numbers were 7 10 and 14 with various things attached to them if you brought a student back before 14 days there were things criteria that had to be checked before the student was was really back in class um that since they went from 7 10 14 to zero that there's a there's the possibility of finding some middle ground in there you know is it a different number of days is it other circumstances that is it um other checks of the student as they come back to the building uh so i think the answer is yes that there are some possibilities we could look at even if it's not zero i've got one more question are there still disposable masks made available to kids as they enter the building yeah yeah anybody who enters without a mask would have the opportunity to take advantage of how's the supply of those is it still i think it is still very very high dr boseman others high mass quantity at this point yes thank you those are great questions to offer clarification i appreciate that all right next is public comments okay all right so i i'm gonna take the prerogative to offer some comments here at the beginning because i am concerned i do appreciate you

so i was pleased to see that the change was not drastic as you recall we had mass breaks we had hand washing we had later arrival and dismissal procedures and we were working very hard to make sure that um there was not a lot of learning loss and in in concert with that we were really working hard at acceleration to make sure that kids would have what they needed in the grade level to master the standards and so those those there are our ela scores and math scores if you look the column all the way to the right you can see the percent that we dipped on average from our 1819 scores so our largest dip may have been in grade eight for math i mean yep for math and for ela in the other areas it was you know two percent in in grades five and six and grade seven only a quick question uh other than being a coveteer we had a mix of hybrid and synchronous asynchronous learning what do you have an idea yet what drove that corporation at a great day was anyone single factor or was there a culmination of um perfect storm for that certainly it was a perfect storm we also had some things at play with cohorting because students were cohorted they did not mix up for classes and so they really were staying with the same group which we know is not a good strategy but our hands were really tied with you know trying to make sure that we brought all kids in but we weren't mixing them up and remixing them and having that the teachers moved from classroom to classroom rather than the students so that is one area but kevin did you want to i was going to add two things on that one that um there were some spots where some of the dips match might happen grade 8 was not that case however anecdotally from the state and in looking at some of the data there were districts where we had 12 and 15 dip in grade 8.

there was 25 30 percent dip in grade 8 in some other districts so i think across the state grade eight was a particular uh grade level that uh from a statewide view had some significant drops so i don't i do think a little bit of the perfect storm that you're talking about we're not 100 sure about why all those dips it wasn't entirely uh inconsistent with what was happening in other districts across the state got it thank i want to show you this other spreadsheet that i started to share with you before because i think that really shows a bigger picture when you compare where we were with where other districts were elsewhere in the state so i want to make sure you can see this let me know how that looks so if we want to first take a look at ela you can see where we were as compared to where a lot of other districts were so while we may have had a slight dip there were some other districts who had you know larger overall grade three through eight drops marlin can you explain what we're looking at sure sure so okay there you go thank you no we didn't see the headings oh okay okay this is a list of all the districts in our durg across the left and combined grades three through eight english language art scores and if we were to scroll to the bottom you would see that among our durg we ended up placing third out of the 21 districts we had 77.23 of our students were at goal and other districts did not fare so well their their gap was larger and if we move over to math eight three through eight combined you'll see the same thing and this row k is this year's data and you can compare it to last year's and you can go back four or five years and see the the percentage change is it safe to say that we had made quite a nice in the math the year before we did we did we had put significant energies and efforts into that math and had hoped to continue some of that work but cobin really impacted us being able to pull people to work together you know across tables across buildings and we do have plans to to do that particularly at some of the higher grade levels could you raise that up to madison or me okay so um they're one district that it looks like the only district that improved so um just it's just observation i read a story about it that they actually um somehow did that um i i i it's interesting to see us compare it against other districts but i am concerned about what's going on in our district and there are some other grades where we have 10 [Music] declines in performance um and i you know it a lot of factors going on last year um and i understand that i i know you guys are saying acceleration is the way to go um i look at these results and i'm a little leery i'm concerned um so how can we make sure that with acceleration we're on the right track um and that we're not losing importance important skills as we look to ensure that the kids are getting what they need without extraneous information so it sounds like you want me to convince you that our students are going to be okay i know they're going to acceleration work in our curriculum writing work and our additional collaboration time and our our new department chair at the high school and our new textbooks and the new um the new math inventory i think all of these things faith are are truly pointing in the right direction and i think they are what enabled us to continue to be fifth in the state of connecticut when you're talking about our scores as compared to the rest of the state i think that we've had i had calls today asking to reach out to to talk about what we're doing so um i'm i'm feeling pretty good about where we're headed i i am i do i like do i like to see a drop no but i have colleagues who have had a 15 20 30 drop so when you compare it to that i think heck we are on the right track this is what we need to be doing for our kids and i would not be doing my job if i didn't ask that question from all again i understand that probably the biggest thing uh you know the biggest factor was every single obstacle that was thrown in your direction but i also want to make sure that we are continually monitoring this and constantly asking ourselves are we doing the right thing and i uh right now it looks yes in comparison to other districts but you know i as i said need to ask the question trust but verify i think is what the faith is saying so so marlene i i think i'm going to try to sell faith on this but i think one of the reassurances i have is the fact that acceleration is identifying those gaps kids need to catch up on it's not trying to re-teach last school year and further behind so i i know based on the curriculum writing uh talking from the teachers they're they're pretty confident they get the kids caught up actually a little bit ahead so i know we're not going to see these results um for a while probably not during the next school year but it'd be nice to see some indicators um some checkpoints throughout the year to see how many from the teachers just to see how they feel the kids are doing it they truly are getting caught up and accelerated and they're seeing those positive changes happening but i trust it will happen which i think goes back to the question you asked earlier tony are we going to go back and and take stock mid-year and so again that's that's all i think all of the things and the questions that you are asking is that living and breathing every single day day in and day out work that kevin and myself and the math coordinator and english language arts coordinator and and mary and maureen that's that's this is what we live and breathe we're constantly doing you know those check-ins so i appreciate that you have an appreciation for those questions and that work which we do so that's good that we're all sitting on this curriculum company thank you okay um great all right um and i'm sorry i do you have any questions when you have one all right when you do we'll pass it over again okay thank you okay i don't want to miss um miss the ngss piece of that which was at the bottom of the handout that everyone has and the link so uh grade five eighty percent grade eight seventy three percent we really stayed about steady where we were we need we have some work to do with grade 11 which as you know the work that we had planned was not able to happen because of the virus and our work with the connecticut science center i sometimes wonder that you all are going to be very broken i'd be surprised that we had a meeting it didn't mention that i'm kind of exploiting it so it's actually a good thing thank you so um we certainly have plans for that i was at a instructional leadership team today where dr gad was really delving into the data of the ngss with her team we are working with julie barker and the administrative team and i have a meeting on thursday to further explore some of the improvements that we can make some of which are really easy and we don't think that we will see that number again and that is it for the assessment data okay um thank you for that um any questions on ngss from anybody just okay i don't see any all right um next item is an out-of-state overnight field it's just informational it's not out of country so therefore um we don't have to take action on it yes and and typically these field trips just because of the fact that we're in coven you might not see a trip like this because it's not for approval but being that we're just starting to get out of the woods with everything i thought it was important to let you know in case anyone in the community asked you like wow we're sending kids to florida what you know what's going on how do you feel about that disneyland yeah disney world even better with matt swanson that's gonna be a fun trip i know matt a little bit i'm gonna run this over to mary so you could hear her clearly and she's gonna give you a little uh inside scoop on the trip to disney good evening can you hear me yep my okay good um this is this is a great trip that matt has put into place and i'm going to start at the end where questions typically arise which is is there a plan for insurance and ensuring that if students sign up for a trip especially in these uncertain times is it covered and yes it is uh he has discussed this with the group destinations unlimited that's working to support the trip and organize not only security but also any kind of insurance and and returns for fees in the event of an of of a cancellation so i know that this is this is part of the the turbulent time question um so they the vendors would get as much refund as as possible that we strongly recommend anyone who participates to get the insurance uh so that they would get at least 75 percent of what the of what the outlay is so this is a trip for our students who are participating in the history through pop culture course and it's tied to a larger project where they're looking at pop culture through the lens of the way disney has portrayed american culture for decades uh and so they will be going to florida to sit with the imagi at the imagination campus and to work with the imagineers on theme park design and how they design and develop stories so that as students then retell some of their historical insights based on their work in the pop culture class utilizing different disney movies they're going to create their own story at cheshire high school by doing a mural down by the the assistant principal's office and so that's going to act as a as an installation demonstrating their year's worth of work so this is a way for them to learn from how disney demonstrates their messaging how disney's tell stories how disney utilizes uh and also commemorates shifts in american culture and how we're going to use that as a lens to understand american popular culture so this this kind of this full project is very interdisciplinary um they're going to be contributions from our art department our career and technical education department and also obviously our social studies department and our special education department so really bringing a number of students together on a number of talents together uh to tell the story of american popular culture through the lens of disney so that's the purpose of the trip uh there are 28 students attending so the student ratio they're looking at two chaperones so one chaperone for every 14 students they would be traveling obviously by by by bus airplane and motor coach between here and there and they'll be provided with meals some meals on their own certainly the day of the initial trip and there's also a security guard uh so that's going to be present at the hotel to ensure that the whole group is safe and the cost is 2 for each attendee right sounds like quite a trip and quite a project it's a it's a huge project that they've undertaken it's so exciting calling it the disney museum project i maybe it's i i i was gonna say uh i don't remember or recall this trip this type of trip in the past is this uh something new or are there similar trips to different this is new in the country yeah this is new it sounds pretty exciting and the other the other question i had was um do we have uh for students or parents that maybe can't afford the trip are there any uh type of fundraising or other avenues that we're looking at i know we you always have a couple programs in mind when you when you do these trips mary yes and with every trip students can also do some fundraising prior to the trip so that's how we typically handle that great thank you sure great my pleasure oh that is april 7th through the 13th so over april vacation a while away great wonderful thank you sure okay um and then last item on the information under informational items is state assessment calendar yes if you'd like to take a look uh the state releases each of the state assessment calendar so i always try and make sure that folks see that in september we will set our district calendar usually somewhere in january once we have a better idea of snow days and can gauge how many weeks we're probably going to be in school well okay just taking a quick look at it all right thank you sure any comments or questions no yeah tony so just one quick question in the state assessment calendar yes more i have no issues with it i get it i i just wonder sometimes as you know we have uh parents that are worried about too much testing going on um and as long as folks understand that this is not for all grade levels or certain great levels i think even last year marlene uh you thought that someone asked the question how much time is spent actually preparing for the s back and i i want to say it was about maybe four hours in total it would be worthwhile to do something for each one of these tests so folks have an idea of it's not a lot of time it's a few hours here and there it's not going to take up the whole year just to put people's minds at ease what the that's all right just yeah no we did that and we also talked about um having a little fun with some of the test questions at one of our curriculum committee meetings this fall i'm ready so all right so after we plan that um real quest marlene could you quickly go through we all understand what the s back is could these other tests could you just explain what they're measuring sure bear with me a second i just want to pull it up so i'm looking at the same thing now those of you who are here don't laugh i know i just blew that up very much but i'm having a hard time seeing it from this distance i say i'll read it how about if i read it no i got it i got it faith so the ngss is the next generations right and standards assessment um that first thing is just so that if you needed to that's this is sort of a document internally as well that is the browser that we use to access the smarter balance and the ngss tests the connecticut alternative assessment is for special education students with a very specific line item in their iep that allows them to take a version of the science test i'm sorry of the regular test and then you can see this the second one the alternative science assessment the ctas again especially for some of our most impaired students the smarter balanced assessments that is the one for grades three through eight and then the sat school day which is only for our grade 11 kids okay thank you and that then that so really it's the it's sat school day for all grade 11 across the state the smarter balance for all the kids three through eight um the ngss for grades three five and eight those other two are specifically for special education students okay great thank you you're welcome okay um any other questions all right moving on to item four right yeah now do you all have a new business can you all access the um the slides yep yes okay so what i will do is i will walk you through them so you remember last year that commissioner cardona at the time had provided districts with an opportunity to have some flexibility in their educator evaluation plan and the reason for that was because of cobit and getting into classrooms and spending um you know too much time and having teachers out of the classroom for some of those more formal evaluations what we have typically heard from our teachers and our evaluators is that the informal evaluation sometimes can be much more meaningful because they're sort of on the spot they're not planned you don't know someone's coming in it seems to lend itself more to real life and to some really nice feedback so this year the new commissioner also has granted us an opportunity to utilize the new flexibilities in the guidance it indicates that we need to meet with our pdec committee our group of administrators and teachers who represent all different types of evaluations so teacher evaluation school counselors school social workers ots pts etc and they have said that we we can implement these new flexibilities the bottom line really is they're the same flexibilities as last year except that there is a final summative evaluation that takes into consideration the percentages as outlined in this document which were this were the same as before so i met with the committee last week we reviewed the new flexibilities dr gad was there um and we had some conversation and they said yes they would like to implement new flexibilities and so that meant that i need to present that to all of you in hopes that you would say yes we want to do that again for this year and we would bring it to the full board for um for agreement okay um good luck to see everybody um all right so do i hear emotion to accept the uh flexibilities for implementing the connecticut guidelines for educator evolution evaluation sorry 2017 for the 2021-2022 school year to full for full board consideration okay and no moves okay so oh go ahead sorry man let me jump back and forth between and and your c uh so c i have flashbacks to four five six seven years ago when then governor malloy and the sd putin put in fact that very uh detailed seed evaluation system that was pretty much rejected by every teacher group in the state for a number of reasons looking at this i know this is a different is this different than that seed i i would say yes because it's much more concise and to the point and i noticed that there is a one measure that which is nice to see because i think this was a huge contention point with teachers four or five years ago which was that teachers can determine one related parent goal um and get stakeholder feedback on that which i think is a great thing i was kind of curious is the teacher going to receive feedback from parents on that how would that work that one aspect so that's a really good question tony so um that piece is similar to the original seed evaluation plan what they've expanded it to is student engagement or principal advisory committee and then the teachers at large decide on a couple of parent feedback goals so that everybody could be moving in the same direction and rowing the boat in the same direction and so mary talked today about um well mary do you want to share mary talk today about some um nice parent feedback goals that they were thinking about over at the high school i'll let her explain yeah so we review our survey data and we analyze what the parents shared with us and we look at how when we see we start with parent data we see where uh the biggest concerns were is that mirrored in the student data and then what if it's what does the teacher data on a similar item say and so we articulated two goals one in the area of helping parents and students understand that there's an anonymous way to report concerns and that that those concerns get responded to and so how can we do that by teachers setting up and this is part of what we're working through teachers setting up in their classrooms very clear expectations and then sharing out when they see any kinds of concerns emerging sharing that with their with their team looking at instructional strategies to support any kind of concerns that they might see or if needed reaching out to administration or school counseling and then ensuring that that parent communication is a piece of that so that's one one area of the feedback from parents that we were looking at and the other was that some that the parents and students reported that some students may not feel as included depending on what their involvements are and so how can we drill down into that a little bit more so an example through instruction would be how do you group students are you ensuring that everyone feels that they're there that they're participatory um and so that's so so we're in the development of those goals and then the specific indicators for how would know if we're making progress on those based on the survey data and then when we resurvey we see if that has improved we've done that in the past and what we looked at regarding the parent and student feedback data is we have made progress on communication goals those were our those were our specific and stated goals for the past couple of years and that the the responses we had from parents were were very strong on on those data points that we had been working on so so that's how we developed that piece of the parent uh peer feedback goal i i think that's huge i uh and especially with the parental involvement we have in our town i think that's going to build very well but it also sounds like that feedback would also help the teachers right away but i quickly address those needs so i i'm not excited about it because i remember when the original seed was trying to be done there was a lot of pushback particularly from teachers because the the parent feedback wasn't really clearly defined at least in a way that didn't give them the opportunity to help set what those goals were but i think it's important so i'm a big fan of this i will support this 100 it just seems much cleaner more simple and elegant um so look forward to the results of this thank you for working on it right anyone else have any questions okay so the motion on the floor is to accept the um flexibilities for implementing the ct guidelines for educator evaluation 2017 for the 2021-2022 school year um for full consideration by the board all in favor looks unanimous uh tony we got a unanimous vote and we saw that anne made the motion we just didn't catch who was the second that was me it was tony yeah right followed by discussion yeah the thumbs up from mr hanlon thank you thank you okay all right um that adjourn the meeting madam queer i move to adjourn the meeting thank you do i have her second second all in favor think it's unanimous thank you everybody

entertain a motion to approve the agenda i make a motion to approve thanks jerry a second i'll second it thanks angie any discussion all right all in favor please say aye hi post all right agenda is approved up next is our public commentary outside of our applicant do we have any members of the public that would like to address the board we have no one in the waiting room okay all right then i think we i think it's safe to move on um we'll move on to the approval of the minutes uh before us we have the housing board of appeals meeting minutes from june 8th of 2021 folks could take a second to review those i will entertain a motion i would motion to approve thanks jerry second angel ii all in favor aye aye post okay june meeting minutes are approved up up next is our old business we have a table variance for um 907 sunnyside in ann arbor and it's also in our packet i believe we um are revisiting this now that we have a cost estimate and so i would just ask for a quick uh overview from the city and then we'll also hear from the applicant so um mike are you giving the report or is glenn today i am great thanks um the the staff um is isn't sort of the same position that we were before we're not recommending it be approved because we can't determine if that stair is original to the house if the stair is original the house under building code r102.7 for existing structures the stairs could remain the way that they are now um the the issue comes in is that there's a a permit that was issued um in 1966 if that stairway was the interior stairway um it would not meet the code of the time and would need to be altered to become compliant and i believe that it was discussed last time that there's an exterior stair that could have been altered around the same time thank you or do you have any questions of the city at this time before we hear from the applicant all right not see any mr zeller would you like to um address the board of course good afternoon members of the board um appreciates you taking the time here to look at the application of for variants for my property at 907 sunnyside boulevard if you see that the concern seems to be that um it's it cannot be determined that by the members of the board if the staircase is original to the house or if this is the the staircase at the back entrance um i've taken pictures of the staircase at the back entrance which is a concrete staircase i could submit that by email if that's helpful right now um that would make sense um in terms of this permit in 1966 was filed by pyre which is a concrete concrete uh concrete tractor the staircase that leads to the basement is inside the house it leads from the kitchen too there's there seems to be some kind of is that me um feedback not sure but we can still understand you oh okay and can if you can hear me i continue i can hear you um the the staircase i in my application have taken pictures of the staircase i i strongly believe that it is original to the house i have removed the carpet also of the staircase now and what could we do about it to clarify this question we had talked about this last time i mean would it help you helpful if uh this schedule here um a meeting at the house um we look at this staircase um in so i've submitted a floor plan with my application and there is however the outside staircase or the the is implicated in this 1966 um um a permit is not drawn in there but it's a back entrance staircase that is code um so what can what could i do here to help you with the clarification um of what is the staircase in the pictures i think one can see the staircase i filed the variance application form is within the house it has six steps leads from the kitchen uh to the half basement the um staircase in the back entrance of the house however is not included in my application since i did not realize it would be part of the discussion thank you i remember seeing the pictures from last time of the concrete stairs that go from the surface level down into the basement so i know that at least some of us have seen those i think we were all in that same meeting yes we were fine so i don't know that we need to see those again um and those stereo cases are to code they have a 10 inch thread depth they do have um i would have to look now at the exact measurements but they are to code um i think the rhizome those staircases is also seven inches and they're wide enough and this stairway is constructed out of wood correct right it's constructed out of wood yeah there used to be a carpet on there and i've removed the carpet now um so the red one can i actually see it better but i've not taken pictures since then i do have um brandon um box um has scheduled a re-inspection for this coming week on monday if i may brandon is out of the office so it will be jeff malone that will be coming okay so there is a there is a reinspection scheduled for this coming week but it actually um yeah there were a few other minor things um in the original inspection report that i have fixed in the meantime and i think the additional information submitted this time was the um the repair estimate and that that's what you asked for and so i got in the repair estimate it's right now difficult to get contractors they are all fairly busy um are there any questions or further questions i can answer i don't have any questions anyone else on the board so we've ruled out that the permit or we're not 100 gerbil or pretty sure that the permit in 66 is for the back staircase is that correct is that what we're all an assumption i mean i don't like to assume but payer doesn't usually do interior work so angie i think that the question is is that we we have a permit and it's unclear what that permit is for got it and i think the city is saying because they can't say with a hundred percent certainty that it was not for the interior of the house they're saying there's a possibility that the stairs are not original and thus the variance is being required i see okay i'm following on i went ahead and called payer yesterday just to see if they happen to have any records from 1965 they do not um but can they tell you if they do interior work on wood stairs is it just a little changed ownership a couple of times since then uh there was nothing on their website that indicated they did you know woodworking that was not immediately related to foundation work right so they'll put in some wood to lay a foundation or for a sidewalk but everything else was uh pretty strictly concrete work great okay yeah i i would take the premise on this that yeah payer is a foundation concrete contractor it's unlikely they built these stairs anything's possible but you know if the premise is these would if these were original they would be approved i have no reason to believe they're not original and i think the payer receipt doesn't shed any light you know is in any way speaks to these being modified especially when you've got stairs outside with a 10 inch tread and very likely done you know by payer i really didn't i was hoping there'd be like a stamp on those stairs outside that said like pay your 1965 to really just tie this into a low but i assume someone would have mentioned it by now if that was the case that there's no stamina i mean i've looked but so far i've not seen it i could put someone on there i don't like altering reality what about the initials eb if we could find the initials eb somewhere because that's who signed the i'm just kidding heavy power yeah so is city's recommendation that he needs to spend the 65 bucks to get the interior steps to code is that one of the one of the options so i think the board had asked for an estimate because um one of the three abilities to grant an appeal is for hardship okay and so now we know about what that cost would be for the six stairs would be about five hundred dollars based on that cost estimate um and i think with the additional information about hair primarily being concrete and if it was a concrete staircase right if it was if the staircase was original to the house it wouldn't have gone to appeal all of those things were layered together in this particular um proposal that's i i don't know that argued that 6 500 is an unreasonable burden on the other hand i'd argue that there's no evidence to me that's compelling to believe these weren't original and they should be viewed therefore as original right so and john certainly correct me if i'm wrong the board has the ability to grant an appeal based on practical difficulties or undue hardship or that the variance does not violate the intent of the ann arbor housing code section 8502 or that the variance does not jeopardize public health and safety that's correct or you can deny it on page two there are uh sample motions uh in either direction of course that's correct correct or the opposite the a practical difficulty or undue hardship does not exist it would violate the intent of the code or that it would jeopardize public health and safety so those are the kind of questions before us as a board that's exactly right should we talk about each of those or how should we proceed yeah so let's i think that's a great way to do it lisa let's talk about um you know kind of the the hardship the practical difficulties i mean other than it's a significant cost it would be done once and hopefully never again um but it's also about a thousand bucks a stair and as a rental property it would take i mean i would guess significant time to recoup that cost well plus we can't find anybody probably to do it in a timely manner there is that added overlay right now yeah so to review that is what do we view that as i think we can probably go through all of them and then make a final determination um the other one is kind of the intent of section 5 8 504 of the ann arbor housing code does someone have that handy well actually 8504 is exits but 8502 does talk about the minimum standards for light and ventilation yeah this wouldn't be light in ventilation this would be exit okay because you want an egress and in this case it's my understanding that there's two egresses right so this staircase as well as the exterior from the basement is that right george yeah that is correct that's correct right okay there is um there's two windows in the room that are wide enough for nemo in addition to the back entrance in addition to the back entrance and it's a short staircase it's not our traditional like 11 or 12 step staircase no it's a short staircase yeah there's only six steps and then the third piece would be the variance would jeopardize or would or would not you know the idea of jeopardizing public health and safety so i i would make the argument there that if it if if it wasn't so you know if it would have been deemed approvable for original construction then it must not be that significant a hazard to public health or safety or we wouldn't uh you know granted a variant says original construction and therefore it doesn't jeopardize public health and safety i think this one it's got a couple of layering factors right it's a shorter staircase there's several other exits out of the building um it's a straight shot it looks clearly visible you know again i think in in many cases we're looking at like fire exits and safety and trying to both um you know have our first responders go down as well as our residents leave and um in this case it's not that long staircase that we would normally see and there's you know an exterior entrance to the basement so in theory you wouldn't ever have to use the staircase if you needed to leave in an emergency so i guess the way i'm leaning is to um support of variance because given all of those factors together um i think it does not jeopardize public health and safety happy to continue to have a discussion or hear other thoughts i'm on the same page with you agreed i would support the variance okay i will go ahead and make a motion um regarding the proposed motion if you don't think it's 8502 if you look under 8514 the our code says practical difficulties or unnecessary hardship it says that variance does not violate the intent of this chapter this chapter is chapter 105 the housing code you could replace 8502 with you know chapter 105 or you could do it with 8504 but you might want to if you if you're going to follow the this one uh 8502 does talk about um minimum standards for light and ventilation so you might want to substitute that for something else as in chapter 105 or whatever section you think it might apply 8504 with respect to uh okay stairs because in there it does talk about uh the treads and things like that all right so 8502 is light you know 8502 is minimum space i'm sorry minimum standards for light and ventilation okay so that might be a typo then gotcha they're both in there so right right i would refer to mike and glenn on that but you might want to correct that i would i would say that the light ventilation was addressed in there we are not working on an appeal for light and ventilation correct correct so i'm gonna i'm gonna give this a try tell me if i got the right section um so my proposed motion is that in case hba21-0002 uh the appeal of the building official's decision that the rental unit at 907 sunnyside does get relief from section 8 colon 504 and the housing board of appeal reverses the building officials decision uh because the variance does not jeopardize public health and safety that is my potion i second that motion thanks angie there's a second any further discussion all right all in favor of that motion please say i i opposed right appeal is granted okay just go back to my agenda here do we have any i don't see any other old business do we have any new business okay not hearing any i think we are at everyone's favorite meeting time which is a motion to adjourn i move to adjourn the meeting thank you i'll second that all in favor aye aye opposed all right deborah do you need anything else from us today we are good thank you so much thank you everybody thank you so much for attending thank you thank you so much thank you again for reviewing my case here thank you bye everyone bye

this is okay just somebody start talking okay start talking oh my god my voice [Music] is [Music] education [Music] the united states of america and to the republic for which we'll skip president's comments and go speak to superintendents um so far i'm thinking we've had a pretty good opening um [Music] we were cleared out by three o'clock so i think the last discussion was at 250 so it was in 10 minutes we were cleared out um i think all the lunches everywhere went pretty well um i didn't see too many issues for the high school for about 25 kids per lunch period for seniors so that should take care of the overcrowding this at the high school cafeteria lunch um unfortunately we're not able to do that today because i believe mr smith was going over all the rules of the cafeteria especially going over the qr codes and how to take pens and things like that so we would not have been able to connect that today so that will happen tomorrow um with that i just want to let everybody know our enrollment as of today is 1900 [Music] um so i just want to make you aware of that we'll also send out our first pulse survey to the parents um for the beginning of the school year so that is my report at this time [Music] glass at the rounds they do not but they are three feet apart on the ramps okay how many four okay yeah all right so if you don't have any community reports so right now we are up to open to the public for agenda items only we have none online i do not see any from the public here so we are going to move to approval of minutes five days one of the approval of minutes for eight nine eight twenty three may i get a motion let's get motion motion motion uh mr thomaselli seconded by mrs morris now discussion we have to make an amendment for uh mr januzzi he was present on the ninth for those minutes uh so we need to make sure that it's corrected that mr judas was present for the minutes on the night any other comments or questions about minutes no this is okay mars yes usa abstain from 5.1 uh yes to 5.2 [Music] abstain both 6.1 uh approval of district and high school personnel resolutions resolve the superintendent recommends for approval of the resolution since outside the personnel resolutions under district financial six point two through six point twelve can i get emotion um [Music] and what does that mean so in other words by contract they're only allowed to have four different classes that they teach so i'll use math as an example out for one geometry algebra two so on so somebody has a fifth class that you're teaching so a higher level math per say like a calculus b cap or whatever so by contract we have to give them a statement any other questions scene none thank you vote paul bo yes morris yes yes ushamano yes thomas ellie yes yes with an abstention from 6.9 and 6.10 zipcode yes [Music] can i get a motion motion motion mr thomas second second mr zipko discussion [Music] abstain yes education resolutions district of high school resolved the vamper board of education recruits resolutions at that time in educational resolutions under the district page for 8.2 through 8.4 can i get any motion okay motion missed the battle there second second second mr bell discussion i think that's going to be something that we're going to have to do every year moving forward just to have our files but yeah that's a are those things that will get updated on all the bases yeah um we left them in there and we didn't necessarily need them for the virtual plant but we left them in there as a reference for us um because again with this virtual plant part of it is if you use it for snow days you can use it for if the building happens to go out for like one billion taxes however that plan was developed for a long term being out for a long term period of time so we wanted to leave those things in there just as a record source and is this a resource that is going to become public knowledge for absolutes in the district yep something positive on the website matter of fact the old one should be on the website after you approve this when the will come down to the law so i was going to ask you that's the pandemic yes mars yes yes what's the matter amicelli yes yes yes ocean passes section 9 educational resolutions middle and elementary resolve the boundary court of education approved the resolutions as outlined in educational resolutions under middle and elementary schools 9.2 and 9.3 can i get a motion awesome motion mr bail second second second miss morris discussion so happy to see him we're planning the eighth grade trip again yeah it's very exciting actually i told all the principals you know all these class trips and everything at this moment in time i want to be as i want to try and get back as normal as humanly possible within the confines that we have [Laughter] is yes morris yes yes luciana thomas ellie yes that's steam yes [Music] so you'll see that from time to time again a word agenda it's just letting you know that that particular student who is a kid okay uh section 10 special education resolutions uh resolved boundary court of education approves the resolutions as outlined in special uh special services resolution is 10.2 and 10.3 can i get a motion motions motion second second miss discussion is that something we perceive for for anybody yeah when it comes when it comes to specialist students we have a requirement from the department of education the federal department of education to fill medicaid for anything that we can build medicaid for um usually what you'll see is you'll see a report sometime later in the year called semi that semi report is actually what we've built and what we received from medicaid um usually what will happen is like we're supposed to get 95 of whatever we put in for for medicaid we usually don't make that number so we usually end up with an action plan for that um that's just an unfortunate thing with our particular population that just can't get the paperwork returned but yes that's exactly the requirement okay and you know it leads into a second question which is typically you know obviously we're voting on an amount of money that's associated with this contract but the town isn't really going to how many children have a special ed this year we are working this year out of district specialists especially 49 49 and how much of the budget is i don't know the exact percentage of the top of my head but i can get back to you on that i will say roughly 3 million on uh page four it actually knows that if there's a discrepancy between the tentative rates that this has been agreed to under the casual experience that there would be some kind of [Music] a year to two years later so what happens is the department of education gives them an approved amount which they don't give to them right now where you're actually using an old amount and then they give you a true up number later and then usually what happens is depending on how much we put it for like uh transportation esi things like that extended school year um you know there usually is a true up number that we usually have to come up with um or sometimes you know there's occasions where it does come back to us too but usually we're you know department of special education coming up with those uh tuition figures they give you a tuition figure that you have to use based upon the classification just replacing the song so far it gets a little complicated it does get a little complicated but it's uh but again that's based upon that true number that we get a year and a half two years later um but i think right now between us and southbound we've done a really good job of trying to keep that into alive so we're not hurting each other just not last year [Music] i gave you guys a really good deal on that i believe you i'm just making sure you know that i know that but i gave you a really good deal on it okay no problem any other questions and just so everybody knows that again for south fabric they ended up owning us quite a bit of money um i gave them a very large crazy period i actually broke it up over uh the two payment things that were one payment thing just so everybody is aware you know we work really well with southbound brook and i try to keep that relationship as open as i can unfortunately that that relationship's a little strained at the moment after our nursing uh issues but you know i try to keep that as immediately as they can with them um it's a great relationship that we have with southbound park i want to i want to emphasize that we've had such a great relationship with south soundbrook dr goby and i work really really well together and we're able to uh take care of our kids extremely well by sending some of our kids there free of charge they sent some of our kids here free of charge with our special ed programs and things like that um so i just wanted to to emphasize that piece question something you just mentioned about um sometimes it's the parents but a lot of times the out of district places themselves right and it costs is yeah when it comes to sending and trying to get the uh district policies to fill out the paperwork there's no forced requirement for them to fill out the paperwork we're basically at that vetting ball right it really does hurt us but we do the very very best we can to get everything in [Music] yes we're up to section 11 financial resolutions resolve the founding board of education resolutions is outlined in financial resolutions 11.2 through 11.6 can i get a motion motion i'd just like to thank everybody for the donations i i will say on that end that um mrs fisher has done an unbelievable job of coordinating the donation to get to our families that are displaced um you know thank you thank god um down brook has not been hit as hard as that they have in the past but we do have probably 15 families or so displaced from this uh and uh i know even today alone getting out the clothes the towels all the other items that we've been able to do uh mrs fisher really deserves a big round of applause for all her efforts in that area i like to second that i think mrs fisher has been exemplary in not only bringing the board together but the community as a whole and i know a lot of my constituents and just neighbors and people in general are so thick the job that you've done mrs fisher of official presidents any other questions of course so the last set of financial reports that were published and a couple of quick comments on eleven three which is just one quick point of reference it seems to me that 2e and 1b might be in conflict i just want to have i guess some clarity who's going to be responsible for engaging the community uh whether it's going to be the consultant or whether it's going to be responsibilities i would think that that's a question you're going to have to ask the opportunity i don't remember the specific number he just referenced i think it was two and later in the document it actually seems to indicate that the district would be responsible for that so i just want to make sure that in you know i can tell you from from from what i've seen in the contract and what michelle and i signed that is supposed to fall to the consultant and i don't think that's how you pick that yeah the board agrees to arrange for proposed forums c1b yes it references you right back to where it says the consultant so we arrange it and then he takes care of it from there maybe maybe we schedule it i don't know yeah my only other question is it seems like the reports that the consultants are going to be delivering key deliverables but they're not really specified to any great degree in the document and they maybe have samples that they can share with us i mean i know the contract is long signed and executed again what i would tell you to do is um michelle is the point of contact with whitford who's the lead consultant for this i would send her a question to michelle michelle and send it to bonnie gave me an answer any other questions okay yeah yes mars yes yes yes but i'm just abstaining from uh check three eight two eight nine check three eight four one six okay i'm sorry give me the second one please uh three eight four one six and then i'm abstaining from 11.4 and 11.5 can you give me the first check number yes okay at this time we are up to items 12 to 13 other manners to come before the board and your business do you you know potentially how long do you think the students will be displaced for or is that just like how is it going to be like are they going to be i can i can tell you that um some of those are permanent and then our homeless that is one that they get when we get funding from the state because they're attributed absolutely no no there's other ways to get right so that's why absolutely not nothing important yes there's a different way it is yeah any other matter seeing them we are open to the public for discussion items online i see none from the public at this time at this time we need to move into executive session under items four six and seven we will be dismissing from executive sessions because there is no other items that will be taken uh in public so i'm making everybody know that we're going to executive session will probably return from executive sessions so um can i get any emotions going through executive session most of mr tommy second second second just to bail all in favor all right thank you foreign you

questions on anything before we move on all right the second on the floor all in favor thank you call to the public i did not have any forms flynn good all right thank you item six information and discussion items student council reports so wesley was supposed to be here and i'm not sure if he's just coming in yes he's perfect timing thank you um hello i am the student council vice president unfortunately our president leslie couldn't be here today so i'm here to sub in um what's your name wesley wesley i'm gonna pull up here i have a list of things all right so we all good am i ready to start right now okay so student council is getting busy with events and we're excited to be planning these events considering that we did not last year our events our next events will be homecoming spirit week the chairperson is our senior class president sabrina lopez and she was the one that planned prom which was very good and so we're excited to see homecoming this year the theme for our homecoming is lights camera poco it's like a red carpet kind of hollywood kind of theme to it and our spirit base so starting monday is um let's see here monday the 27th is know your role seniors are the list stars they will wear yellow juniors are supporting actors they will wear green sophomores are the understudies they will wear red and freshmen are the extras they will wear pink and then that money that monday the 27th we have a 30 minute assembly to kick off the week seniors will have the senior parade at 7 40 am they will meet at del rio drive drive to heritage and cross the highway towards territorial and back to the school trafford will be controlled seniors will be given their class t-shirts and will take the 22 picture outside which is where they line up on the field they form a big 22 their graduating year and then nominations for our homecoming royalty will occur next week during english classes and will be announced at the homecoming football game tuesday the 28th promote the homecoming football game and then friday the first will be the homecoming game and the theme for the student section will be neon colors so all the students in the student section will be wearing their neon shirts and stuff and then royalty will be announced at halftime and admission is up to how much football the football team has decided to charge and then for our student council budget as of right now we have about thirty two thousand dollars which we will use for dances decor djs venues class t-shirts senior gifts studco state and senior field day next year we want to buy all the student class students class colors class colored t-shirts that correspond to their skittles day color so like how for the new coming freshmen we have the orange shirts we usually get them we want to do that forever all the classes so we're thinking about doing that next year and then um paying for only sophomores and seniors as oh yeah okay so for the shirts we'll be paying for only sophomores juniors and seniors because the just uh the office bodies did for the freshmen and um one last note for students that cannot afford certain things miss deangelo and the class have budgeted money for the kids that can't afford stuff so if nobody can afford something they can come to us and hold on one more thing oh yes for the senior trip um we voted to have it but we are currently counting the votes for the destination and we have four places um knottsbury farm disneyland adventure park or six flights so those are our current um choices we're trying to choose from right now but we are gonna have a that is secret fantastic does anyone have questions for wesley great beginning of the you wesley year you thank you item 6p superintendents reports all right we have a few items on here first of all we're going to start with enrollment thank you and the district continues to be up um 150 atm over last year and which is that and literally within one adm of our pre-pandemic um 100th day adm so um it's 22 60 i think no 22 15 is where we're at right now that's identical to where we were two years ago on the birthday now this year is going to change just because of um we tend to lose high school kids gain nka kids so that number is going to change as we get closer to the 100th day which is end of february beginning of march but uh off to a really really good start there continues to be a significant increase in kindergarten enrollment we were at 208 we are now at um it's 208 right now it's playing with two 11 but i don't have those hard copies yet in my hands okay so that is the largest cohort we've had in a decade at least um and um great over last year which was 135 kids so fantastic numbers and because of that we're gonna we're coming to the board to request another teacher later in the meeting we'll talk a little bit about that but we're suit it's a fantastic problem to have so we're super excited that parents are trusting their kiddos with us and with territorial early childhood center we also have a significant increase at that at the high school um peter and i last week attended the aspa law conference and i'm actually going to give some time to peter to kind of share his uh impressions of the law conference yep right now you people should know me better than this um i have enjoyed not enjoyed the asba long conference is the best learning experience i ever attend while serving on this board they bring in technical experts to not only go over current legal issues but incredible background on specific topics for two straight days so if you can bear with me i literally take right up my notes some people not surprised okay um cindy thomas who's the executive director uh kicked it off chris thomas okay i'm structured yeah okay trust me guys um he updated with you're all familiar with the lawsuits that are going on the one about proposition 2828 which was the tax increase a lot of the issue rested on the term these are grants not an income to the state now the reason for that is very simple there's a state constitutional limit as a percentage of the state budget that can be built if devoted to schools and with that income it would have exceeded that 49 percent so some of us who heard about this said well that was that was a mistake why would they have done they should have known better than that well as chris explained and i'm not going to delve into it because i only understood a portion of it there's some legal basis for terming these as grants that they think can stand up in court to keep it outside of the state budget limit and it will be going to they hope to get the stakes at free court within the month to test that term if that term holds then that tax increase will will stand uh if it does not hold then then it dies there's a second suit on the state budget bill which had things like the mass prohibition and things things like that there's a couple of suits dealing with that one of them and this has been forever in arizona state constitution says you can only have one topic in a piece of legislation well when they had these bundled legislative finance failed they threw the kitchen stink all the bills that could could not get through committee were thrown in just to get the bill passed so there is a lawsuit saying challenging this year's uh comprehensive budget bill saying that it's illegal because you can't put non-budget items in to a bill which is labeled budget um the title and there's another there's another word in the kind of phrase the constitution says the title must describe all elements of the bill and this did not it just simply says saving my hands whatever um now the masked bill ducey's anti-mass bill there's another court case dealing with that and that is under the equal protection clause and there's been a lawsuit filed saying you cannot treat public versus private schools differently and it does it's only addressing public schools so the private schools the approaching schools and so forth are not affected by it and there's a lawsuit challenging that so as you can see there's a lot of things going on in court right now to try to upend some of the stuff that the legislature did now on some of the of the next one is the our keynote the keynote speaker was john ratzenberger name means nothing to me but i can't remember cindy's man john rantenberger was the loudmouth expert on cheers i took his word for it but he was he was talking about cet and the desire and necessity for cpt throughout our system that's about as good as it got because he just spent an hour giving anecdotes about his life and why it was good for him to have done manual labor and why you need to know how to wire a circuit board or a house and so forth so it was i mean he spoke very well but he could have sent his message in five minutes and done jokes the rest of the time and he would just go off sorry but john uh okay uh now on some individual sessions there's three that i i wanted to highlight um one was the school's authority on stating regulations on our campuses particularly dealing with thc vapes and all the marijuana stuff has now come so close to us because of legalization marijuana and basically the bottom line is we have absolute authority we can prohibit of course it's illegal for kids under 21 to possess it but we could prohibit which i think we do already vapes on all of our campuses uh but we could you know do anything that we need to whether it's sporting events school activities off campus anything involving our district we have the right to regulate those sorts of things which is to me was very very good good news another session which was interesting uh somewhat disappointed but very interesting was the whole issue of affordable housing for staff people remember we've been talking for a long time now about the problems of getting housing john for staff moving here uh just because there's not much available in chino valley or or paulden and prices are high so there are two or three examples from around the state of what districts did to provide for staff all but one was very simple they owned land and they actually built housing specifically for staff unfortunately most of them required passive bond issue to be able to forward build the housing which of course we have difficulty doing which sort of eliminated that excitement for me but it was possible legally to give extra signing bonuses for housing for new staff so that was legal so if we have somebody who could not find havoc housing it's like a legally like a signing bonus but it is for us the system of entertaining housing if somebody's coming here from from out of town the last one i want to report on was titled avoiding litigation this one i was passed out when i saw it because they started out with katie stuck out with hazel i didn't realize that hazing is still a problem but he showed physical photos and graphic descriptions about how hazy was still endemic throughout this country and that hazing primarily affects boys primarily affects sports but he says there's one thing that you've got to be very careful about that all of your sports affiliated staff our coaches and and staff are well familiar with the signs because he said basically nobody has been who has been hazed ever reports it the reporting comes from other people who are aware of it or seen it zero times that the person has been hazed and as part of the culture apparently of sports that you don't show your weakness by admitting that you been hate and he was very graphic in some of the exact examples of that he gave other examples of physical problems like he gave one where there was a school staircase and unfortunately the school had a slight incline leading to the staircase and some poor person in a handicapped chair lost control of the wheels rolled down to the start of the stairs and fell all the way down and they had a graphic picture of what her head looked like after it's been split open at the bottom of the stairs so again careful looking for the physical things that could be leading to danger to kids which they could lead to lawsuits to the district uh so he said final grandpa you need to have supervision in all activities locker rooms sports activities and bus stops trips in particular be sure you have eyes on those events and uh again superb superb session and i'm so happy i was able to appreciate that i'm glad you're able to attend for all of us also any questions [Music] thank you for your report moving on um in the packet there's um two forums um mr total was talking about how he and his wife looked at all the numbers i do every day also um the first one is basically on the the young by county community health services website daily they have the county numbers this is just a summary and then the next page is the yapi county revised benchmarks that are on the arizona department of health services uh one thing to notice is uh there's two real two real benchmarks there's cases per hundred thousand uh this is from the department health services and percent positivity the percent positivity has been hovering kind of up and down a little bit in a relatively small range between 13 and 15 but the cases for 100 000 um was going up since july and we are hoping peaked august 22nd because it um at 308 cases per hundred thousand and um last week it was 252.

wreath i am the new primary music teacher hi i'm missy carr from greenville south carolina and i teach second grade at the elementary school hi i'm sabrina fortuneski and i am a third grade teacher hi i'm vicki stewart and i'm a third grade teacher all right thank you guys that was very nice now let's move on to the budget hearing does anybody have any or mr gold yeah i'll go through a couple of the exhibits real quick um you have exhibit one two and three are part of the budget hearing tonight the uh these are exhibits that i've shared in prior years when doing the budget i will just go through a couple things for you in regards to this one if you look at exhibit one is the operating funds and you'll see the revenue expenditures over history for each of the funds you'll see that our totals um i'm gonna i'm gonna jump to exhibit two though to talk about interviewer fund balance and you will see uh the end of the year fund balance um again that when we do the budgeting here we we tend to i try i overestimate the expenses a little bit just to make sure that we have room in case of emergencies so you're going to see a significant drop in the education fund when you look at the end of year fund balance report the other funds are pretty stable if you look at the if you go to exhibit three on the budget on the second page of that exhibit um it shows that the expenses the estimated revenue for the education fund is 17 million 370 thousand the estimated expenditures 19 million 261 000 with a that'd be a deficit of deficit of 1 million 890 000 again that would be going to be a worst case scenario um i would i would be lying to you if i didn't think it's going to be tight this year the goal the direction that you've given me when we you know as we've gone through the last six years initially we needed to have a surplus in order to get ourselves out of the hole we were in and now at this point the last few years our goal is to make sure that we are not going backwards and so we haven't if you go back to the end of year fund balance report the exhibit 2 and look at the fund balances over the last few years and they they've gone up at a slow pace they've gone up so we haven't gone backwards you can look at the estimate this year is to go backwards but again that's uh again that's worst case scenario and i don't think that's going to happen but we're going to be really close just want you to know that it's going to be it's going to be really close so part of the reason for the for the increased spending this year is the is the grant money that's come through so we've had a lot of expenditures for grants and so that all had about a million dollars of that has come out of this year for expenditures and we hope to get that in revenue as well but we may not get all that by the end of the year back so we might spend some that we don't get back so i guess i just just just to summarize you've had this budget in your hands uh this is a little different than last month not much but the difference is that we now have a better an accurate idea of where the benefits fell uh last month i didn't know at that time but now we do so that's why you see different numbers but we're we're pretty good i i would say uh this is pretty solid but it i i want you to know it is going to be tight at the end as far as not tight where where we're in trouble tight in the fact that we uh we don't want to see a slip backwards at all so but i think we'll be within two to three hundred thousand dollars either way is my guess if everything goes well just from finance committee something i thought was helpful that i learned from it is that we need roughly half of our operating budget in our end of year fund balance report because of the way the tax is coming yeah yeah so that 12 million may look like a lot but it's really not it's two yeah because we get a big chunk of our taxes right in the end of june so when the year is almost over with so then you could see those years all of those years that we needed to borrow money we were at the 8.8 and the 6.8 because we were down under that 10 million dollar threshold so that is it for all right anybody have any questions can i please have a motion to enter the budget hearing motion second ashton warren uh all in favor of the motion hi any opposed ice habit all right anybody have anything to add nope can't please have a motion to close the budget hearing motion second doug and vivian all in favor any opposed eyes have it but do we have anything to add to the agenda no can i please have a motion to approve the agenda passion gary all in favor aye any oppose i said board member code of conduct review uh vivian do you want to try sure i will respectfully listen to those who communicate with the board seeking to understand their views while recognizing my responsibility to represent the interests of the entire community all right thank you uh anybody have any questions on the consent agenda now just so make a note in the minutes that based on the comprehensive salary study that was done by a big hollow we are including a dollar an hour raise for um all paraprofessionals and building secretaries in this consent agenda can i please have a motion to prove the consent agenda second lauren and gary yes ballinger yes yes bennett yes peter yes yes all right nine public comments we do have uh some here um it looks like miss meek you were first the following are the words of students in our community who felt compelled to share them after their teacher's pride wall was removed the teacher has since been informed that she can display her pride flag these letters were unsolicited and highlight the importance of our district-wide equity work i will share portions of a few with student permission people of color and lgbt lgbtq plus community are getting hate from the world so if those kinds of people go to this school and are worried about their safety isn't the best way to help them by show that they are safe and part of our community by using representation sure there is pride month in black history month but every other month is white and straight month so why can't all people be represented just like white and straight people school is where all young people visit every single day should we and we should be able to show that this is a new generation and that we can all be treated as equals as part of the lgbtq plus community i personally did not expect to see a pride wall in any classroom and it has made my day every day that i laid eyes on it my teacher has made me feel safe i value her for it i value her strength her kindness and her courage i don't understand why the school's website says inspiring a diverse community to be passionate and empathetic learners diverse means variety or very different if the school were diverse it would be accepting of all including people of color or people who are a part of the lgbtqia plus community wouldn't you want a place where you are accepted and welcomed for who you are without any sort of judgment whatsoever when have you ever seen a classroom that represented that because in this school i have never encountered that once by keeping the american flags up but having us take down the pride flag in the black lives matter sign this is saying that you have more pride about living on stolen land with a history of concentration camps and slavery you also kept up a picture of george washington who had slaves so this makes me wonder if you like a man who had slaves and and keep a flag that represents slavery but can't keep up a sign that says black lives matter do you care about black people think about all of the students that were hurt by taking down just one sign thank you our next one is from evelyn bassey okay the lgbtqia plus flags are down from the wall in my coders classroom during class on tuesday this was the first thing i noticed i feel so unrepresented and disrespected these flags were forcefully taken down the students were not considered when we had when this decision was made on tuesday we had a class discussion about this many of us felt that we were unwelcome in the school when they were removed for example some of the students some of the emotions that other students described they felt were disappointed disrespected unheard unwelcome upset and angry big hollow's mission statement is that you will inspire inspire a diverse school community to be passionate and empathetic learners how can you help inspire a diverse school community if diverse people feel like they are being pushed to back down and shoved in a corner these flags have not made any negative influence on our learning as a class they didn't affect how well we focused we have spent the expected amount of time on effort and curriculum it was more comfortable for some students like me to focus on work knowing that they are represented and respected if some students non-allied straights feel like they were not included in these flags miss codib could add a plain straight flag they still feel like they're not unrepresented maybe they can suggest other ways to miss code if then other than taking down all the prod flags just because they feel like they're not represented doesn't mean that nobody should be that's like giving a bunch of hungry people meals but then there isn't enough for everyone to take all the meals back that doesn't that doesn't change the fact that people are still hungry i recognize that you don't have the power to put those wax back up i was writing this to miss meek um but you know what you do have the ability to do address people above you about this issue you are not past you are not powerless in this and you can make a difference in how and heavy color treated students the main reason i don't have a backstory to share is that i haven't come out yet i've been too terrified to come out to my parents and fear what they would think i was slowly building up the courage to tell them but now that i realize this is what some adults do to shut down the idea of pride has made me go back to where i started i want them to know that they haven't done anything wrong as parents it's mainly because of all the hate currently going on the wrong in the world that made me the most scared mom dad i'm bisexual i love you guys so [Applause] thank you for sharing your opinions superintendents report mr gold that's a tough one to follow so i want to start by welcoming um our new teachers the big hollow we had many of you stand up and introduce yourselves already and i'm going to have you do that again but give us a little bit about yourself where you came from just so our board can put a name a face to a name that uh they've every you've all been approved at this board of education for employment here and i want them to be able to see who they hired and so this is your chance just to give us give us your name a little bit about your background where you came from and uh we appreciate you spending the evening tonight with us and then when you're done with this i promise you can go ahead and go so totally fine you don't need to hang around so i would say in any order just pop on up all of our new teachers first just pop on up and introduce yourselves and thanks in chicago is i'm mrs allen thelma allen i am cuban i was born in chicago i'm a
