so they did start the play clock 25 seconds left on that 38 in the half so they are going to recorder they are going to have to run a play here or take a timeout but they don't look like they're in a hurry mccullough out here is the receiver they're going to use him as a decoy and give it to hogue up the middle and he gets little to nothing it's gonna bring up fourth and about three we'll see if south runs a play or if they just take the quarter here looks like they got a punt team coming on the field but i would assume they would just let the let the time expire here which they will so we'll we'll enter the fourth quarter here with a score of 27 to 10 dogs leading it it appears at least right now that they they'll get it back and really couldn't ask for a better third quarter start for the bulldogs there we knew they would have the ball coming uh to start the third quarter they marched down and score and uh again kind of like we saw in the first half some back and forth here in the middle of the quarters we'll see if that continues in the fourth 12 minutes left here left at uh max andrus for this this really uh conference indiana really game of the season as it looks right now as both are tied for the top of the conference with just a few games left in the season looking ahead to the schedule here for the bulldogs they host here bloomington south of course tonight then they travel to bloomington north next week and then host in the season finale terre haute south here back here at max anders field bloomington north 5-1 on the season so far of course that's the that's the bless showdown brother scott bless over there and then uh terre haute south again that's the last home game of the of the year they're struggling a little bit at open six uh here this year so punt team is still on the field to see if they will kick it away good good punt that's gonna spiral and roll inside the 10 where scruggs will field it and get swallowed up with nowhere to go just to say that he gets out a little bit but uh good good job of securing that ball there by jackson and dogs will start with the ball on their own 15-yard line here as we start the fourth quarter that was a line drive punt that scruggs uh did a good job fielding and instead of letting it potentially go out of bounds or be down down there so was able to get five yards out of that really was him on about four bloomington south panthers looking ahead to bloomington south schedule um the only game they have on the calendar remaining here is a chatard contest on october 15th hammonds will keep this one go to the middle of the field and is wrapped up at about the 20-yard line talking with the the radio announcers from bloomington next to me earlier they had a sounds like that a game scheduled against hamilt excuse me hammond morton next week but for reasons that i don't know that game is no longer on their schedule so looks like bloomington south may have a week off next week and then just the season finale before we get into [Music] section eight hammond's back to pass he's got pressure still has pressure spins out of it throws the ball down the field and throws it behind cass center but got himself out of a taking a sack situation then i bring up third and five we see hammonds do that almost every week be able to get out of a difficult situation throw the ball away sometimes throwing for completions or touchdowns wasn't able to complete that one but prevented a big loss as we enter third down brett it does look like bloomington south is trying to rip the ball away from uh from our ball carries it'll be important that columbus north hangs on to it here as we uh get deeper into the fourth quarter but you can tell that they are coached to rip it away there's been a couple of our bulldogs that have been tackled and been called down where those south players are are still trying to get that ball and claiming they they got it after our players are down and i think they had a few missed tackles in the first half just going for that ball and our our skill players being disciplined enough to hang on to it and keep those legs going and turning into positive yards nick i'm gonna put you on the spot here for a second while we have a time out here from columbus north so uh bcs he's excited about renovations that'll happen here at parkside elementary and within that will be a a large overhaul of uh of the the building's technology so do you have any that's that's your that's your world that's your baby so any insight into what what type of technologies we might start seeing in our in our buildings here as we look to renovate several over the next few years i'm glad you didn't ask me about your computer battery so um as we go into renovations at parkside we are excited there are lots of new displays and audio enhancements that hopefully will be accessible for all of our students and improve engagement and prove learning in our classrooms with some tools that our teachers will get hopefully the training they need to to be successful with it give mr redmond here he's having a hard time finding any space here he gets across the 20 but that's gonna be about it [Music] and that'll bring up fourth down clock shows 10 45 and and rolling yeah that parkside renovation nick will be one of those well those things will be inconvenient for a couple years of course with renovating while you're conducting school but uh the payoff and the improvements to that building and then several buildings after that will definitely be worth it and exciting uh for the for the community and especially the students that's that's off the side of the foot here as well and that goodness that ball is going to go out of bounds about the 30-yard line so call that also an eight-yard punt uh so bloomington south just down down three scores here uh 17 points 27 10 that will start with beautiful field position with 10 12 remaining here in the fourth quarter and it really looked like the snap was good looked like he he got a hold the blocking was good it just came off the foot wrong so yes this is a big play could could potentially make this game a little more interesting 10 12 left in the fourth quarter we'll see what bloomington south comes out with here to start this drive and i am i'm excited about parkside especially some of the stem labs going in as well ali back to pass threw that ball on a dime it's a beautiful pass and reception there by cooper fox bring up uh second and five bloomington southwest in no time getting up the line of scrimmage getting a play call and getting set mccullough in the in the game here uh he's only been targeted once that i can recall we'll see if they try to utilize um utilize him here as they they try to get a quick score throw the bubble out here to fox again and he's gonna be wrapped up at about the 22 yard line the clock runs is what the side judge tells us 9 30 and counting and bring up third and one ball in the 22-yard line 27-10 dogs lead all three timeouts remain here for south ali's going to give to hogue here he's got room to go he's across the 20 down to about the 17 clock will stop for the chains to reset be a first down for bloomington south that first down that's a pretty big first down for bloomington south getting inside the red zone good read by hogue there going around the edge again off they're they're pretty consistent zone blocking up front they do have some some big boys on their o-line but north again has done a really good job defensively against this team pressure there across the middle force alley to throw that ball he was trying to get in the general direction of number one mccall the the iu commit but uh falls to the to the turf to nick would you agree that the the pinnacle of this game bloomington south has to score a touchdown here would you would you agree yeah they're running out of time i expect columbus north to put put together another drive here in the fourth quarter that that runner gets swallowed up they are they are playing their stud about every uh down this half so and then really the full game so we'll see what legs mccola has left here to finish out the game with 8 23 left you know neil likins and savion and dawson up front they're such a big part of this defense they get subbed out here and there but they really don't seem like they lose their legs or their wind in the fourth quarter which uh such a advantage for columbus north pressure on alley is getting chased that ball is tipped and falls incomplete and bring up fourth down looks like uh looks like b south will send on the field goal team here see if they can cut that lead to 14 the ball's on the 17-yard line be about 34-yard attempt and see where they set the block typically it's seven yards back and that is what it is so balls blocks on the 24 add 10 for the end zones that's a 34 yard kick good snap good hold blocked [Music] and that's picked up by scruggs with with help all the way down the sideline and that's going to be a score i don't see any flags on the field that's a block and a scoop and score by the division one recruit jackson scruggs just showing his athletic ability and just like that the dogs turned a scoring opportunity from bloomington south closing the gap to two scores and extending it to four scores 33 to 10 dogs you expect big plays from your playmakers and columbus north certainly has showed that tonight jackson scruggs with the block and the scoop and the touchdown uh you don't see that very often coach and that was that was a great run back scruggs one of our best playmakers and they're making him go out there for the extra point and you can tell he uh he's trying to find his legs yeah there's there there are no subs on the p-80 field goal team unless you're unless you're injured so you gotta you gotta just suck it up and get out there so the kick is up and and good easily so scoring out 34 to 10 what a what an energetic uh group we have here in the in the home stands you know you think people might might leave a little bit after half time the band's gone homecoming's done but there's there's still a lot of people here and i'm not sure anybody's left but how what an exciting uh homecoming and uh statement really here from columbus north in a conference indiana for first place and it's a top five team in 5a and really dogs are really making a statement here um 7 47 to go in the fourth quarter if you're a coach and thinking about or even these players you want you have goals that you set on defense on offense and on special teams the bulldogs have to be hitting most of those marks i would think tonight coach as we we have seven minutes 47 seconds left the game's not over but north is clearly in command at 34 to 10.

we will be able to fill you in more about salem last year we had everything set up down below all sudden they say no you guys are going up top so we went up top we were up top and they said nope you guys are down below so we said no no we're going to stay up top here but being out in salem didn't have ship yeah shiver me timbers we were up there we were up there my teeth chatter and i'll know to bring a a jacket next time and go to salem because when you're up there on that on that top shelf man that wind's blowing and it is not very comfortable up there and to think that's how it used to be done up here oh i know i know [Applause] so coming out of the timeout third and 17 from the 10.

bluetooth south is working with a sophomore quarterback at this point um and and again north in complete control right now i i'd have to be and be safe to say at this point so hats off to columbus north so far let's finish this game off yeah again you hate to see a kid get hurt with their starting quarterback at bloomington south but i as i mentioned the backup quarterback seems like a good athlete i'm not i'm not sure that made a tremendous difference here north is just plain uh playing a solid game really just just a couple mistakes here and there so gotta be happy with that kicks up and away fox has the ball at the 10-yard line he's got speed he's going to head down to the hash over here in the 30-yard line and he's swallowed up quickly by it's number number 32 who seems like he's everywhere bryce abner columbus north they they they've got starters on that kickoff team they don't have uh younger kids just getting them a chance to play a little bit they've got their they got their guys out there so so south will start the ball 7 41 on the clock here they trail 34 to 10 ball on the 31 yard line on the left hash and um said it before i'll say it again south is going to have any chance to scrap back into this game they gotta score right now and they gotta score quickly trips to the field here trips to the right for ali he's back to pass he's got pressure force the ball that pressure that columbus north is putting on that sophomore quarterback has really caused a lot of problems i think they they tried a five-step drop there and tried to get fox uh 20 yards down field great pressure from up front from columbus north that wasn't able to give ali the time to really get comfortable and make that throw so good pressure by columbus north again same formation here for south they give us to the back this time he's got some room to go he's brought down at about the [Music] 35 yard line here and be called third and six 7 24 on the clock as i roll special thanks again to josh burnett and his team for coming in on a friday night and most friday nights dedicating his time to to live stream here and peeling him away from from family and getting everything set up here so we can carry the game for you ali on a seven step drop here for a screen to hogue he's got room to go it's well run play out balls out ball comes out side judge indicates that bloomington north recovers which they do it'll bring out fourth in about one that is on the 40-yard line so they are bringing out the punt team trying to see who caused that fumble the ball did come out good pursuit from the backside um but balloons south was able to recover right on the 40 yard line there so balloon south sets up for punt columbus north six under six wells right 6 20 right now clock is running take some valuable minutes off this clock another good punt there from the panthers blythe fields it cleanly and gets brought out of mountains the 35-yard line uh nick i think that fumble was caused by by uh connor issac no surprise that he's all over the ball just as bryce abner is sp speaking of speaking of honorable coaches just walked in right behind me that the honorable head middle school football coach and north side middle school jason perry just walked in we coach we talked a minute ago about your your big signature win over an undefeated jennings county team so congratulations on that so any uh any kids you want to highlight that played well in that contest well thanks for putting me on the spot there uh dr bozeman i appreciate it yeah i i don't know if i can take credit for the win but uh it was nice to go down to jennings county and get that w i thought all of our kids played really well it was fun to watch and fun to see their faces uh after that win it was a great ball game for us well coach you should know anybody that walks in here and gets this close to us i'm gonna hand the microphone over to him and and have him talk about whatever's on their mind so it's uh when the score when the score gets a little lopsided this turn this stream turns into a little open mic night too so is there anything you want any thoughts you want to share it's uh the microphone's always hot as they say second and five here for columbus north balls in the 40-yard line ball in the right hash hammond gonna pull it this time on rpo and he's going to get all the way out to about the 49-yard line for you to run out of bounds would be another first down i love how luke lowes his shoulder puts a little pop on to defender too showing making a statement that columbus north is not done yet in this game i i will say brett this has been fun announcing the game with you this is uh you know i love living in this community get to know a lot of people and and make those connections and coach perry is definitely one of the guys that uh we've gotten to know over the years that that make a big impact on our kids redmond with the carry i wonder if you'll start seeing some subs come into the field here pretty soon you always have to kind of wonder and worry and play the game of deciding you try to protect the health of your players and that sort of thing when when the score's a little lopsided but we'll see how they how they play this out no subs yet and the second in about eight yards to go ball right in the middle of field on the 49-yard line of bloomington south clocks at 440 and ticking down high snap hammond reels it in redmond again find him some space he's out to about the 46-yard line and columbus north will just slowly get those plays called in and let that play clock run down and take the time and get themselves out of here unscathed with a conference indiana win you can tell these players and coaches have worked hard this week as they have all year but they are definitely prepared to win and and hopefully we'll get the victory out here i know coach bless has had that motto since he's been here in the early 2000s and really changed this program around and has had some some great success but another good conference win setting you up for a conference a shot at the conference title is uh really i know one of the goals every year that this program has and another great run for another first down so we'll get to run off some more time the bulldogs there's 3 47 left and they'll start the clock here brett it is it is interesting last year's score we were looking at it uh before the game it was 38 14 bulldogs but this was before the the mccoy boys really came on at bloomington south and has solidified that defense so it was a much different bloomington south team we were expecting to see so north has to be extremely happy with this and again we we close out this game yeah that's a really good point nick when last time we called home game here for north they were playing a cathedral team that had several division one recruits on there and and on the defensive line and columbus north really just held them in check um matter of fact we didn't really even notice them until we started looking into things in the in the fourth quarter so um not that the mccullough uh brothers are are not worthy of their recruiting or that sort of thing because they're really good athletes but they have really been non-factors here um against the bulldogs today so we do have a final ball another high snap there have to work on that a little bit next week but uh give us for redmond they're gonna just try to run some clock and and uh and head out of here soon so uh final at chatard chatard 42 columbus east zero so we have that that score to share here and again just looking ahead to the the calendar a little bit for columbus north they will travel to bloomington north uh well tim and scott bless will not speak to each other all week and act like they're not brothers and compete against each other on friday night and then the final final game here at home against terre haute south on october the 15th hammond's on a carry for little to nothing there big up fourth in about six brett looking ahead to that bloomington north game a little bit here uh as we have we're in minute 43 and ticking here if you haven't been over there to watch the bulldogs play there has been some absolute classic games between the brothers uh here and there but we've we've won there on hail mary's at the end i believe that was christian williams catching it in the end zone several years ago at this point but then they've also had some last minute wins and that's a good football team that columbus north will see in bloomington net next week and it is always very difficult to play in bloomington bloomington north is five and one so another good talented team as north does another quick kick again a little a little bit better executed with uh down at the 15 yards 104 remaining south has three timeouts here with 104 on the clock we'll see how they choose to run this out and looks like uh columbus north has their starters on the field here so just that uh near the end of the season here you want to make sure you're playing your best football in october get close to tournament time and the sectional that uh that you know these 6a sectionals only have a handful of teams in them so that section will go through center grove regardless of how you slice it so trying to get themselves in in prep mode to take on one of the best teams here in the state of indiana here one way or another in a couple weeks [Music] carries across the middle here for about a four yard gain looks like both teams are content with that clock just rolling here i would anticipate one more play from bloomington south and then that'll that'll be it so nick thanks for jumping in and joining i sent nick a text this afternoon at i don't know two or three o'clock asking if he's available and and thankfully he was so i thought he did a great job nick and appreciate you jumping with me and hopefully come back and do it again soon yeah it's great to be back again for homecoming great night for high school football and again north has to be extremely pleased with tonight's performance as the clock is winding down at bloomington south i expect to make a big run in 5a and hopefully they get their quarterback zach david back hopefully he's healthy and it's nothing too serious uh and ready for playoff time here but uh yeah thanks for having me brett that was a it's been fun that's a final here at max anders field on homecoming night 34-10 columbus north moves to 4-3 and bloomington south falls to 6-1 thanks for joining us we will see you again here for the final uh game of the season at least during the regular season against terre haute south appreciate you tuning in for the live stream thanks again josh burnett and his team and we'll see you next time you

send it to motion man to the right side it's going to be number one with the handoff he's going to get to the right side he's going to try to get a first down and he's going to be close and i think they're going to give it to him on the 18-yard gain good for an oiler first down he was flying around that edge just a simple jet sweep there and was that about third and 20 something third and 17. picked up the first down clock keeps moving nine minutes remaining in the ball game now as it's been all the eagles all night coach baker coach stuff made their way down to the sideline from the press box ball on the right hash gonna be a handoff to number 24 once again he just lowers the boom number 24 brought down [Music] chase to queasy all three guys coming in making the tackle there getting white hats to the ball it's all that matters on that defensive side of the ball [Music] second four eight minutes remaining doubles to the left side tight end and a wing back for the oilers gonna be a hand off up the middle to number 24 the big guy rumbling and stumbling he's going to try to get to the sideline he's going to be brought down this time by number 25 mason vaguely it's going to be good for another first down oilers i don't know if i ever asked you who's your favorite uh sports announcer he had to pick one us burger's pretty good yeah for me it's almost like each sport has their own voice you know everybody hates on joe buck i like him oh man come on come on i'll go all right for baseball i'll go joe okay baseball baseball yeah i like it better as a baseball announcer that's just my opinion i'm gonna be over at the busch stadium for sunday's game it's gonna be mike shannon's final game would you look at that handoff up the middle to number 24.

he's going to get a couple yards here nothing much bring up a second down for football though like i said vern whenever he's on that he used to be what cbs i guess it was like three o'clock three o'clock game yeah mine's probably all michael's and chris collinsworth because i just think those are the every sunday night game man it's just you hear those voices and you know it's a big game you're worried about their voices i'm worried about gary underwood getting the sunday football kicked off second and eight for the oilers gonna hand the ball off up the middle number 24. he's gonna find a cutback lane he's gonna gain six [Applause] uh what's his name bill raftery onions that guy got gus johnson there's so many great commentators out there got alex schlemmer no no third and one from the 41.

six minutes remaining in the ball game boilers trying to get in the end zone one more time here doubles to the left side tied in right wing background run the ball to the right side with number 24 puts his shoulder down runs over an eagle and he's going to be brought down by two others looks like 25 vaguely [Music] there's another one over there it's in the 20s i can't see the second number so two eagles making a tackle again who are you going with baseball who are you going with nothing give me my uh what's his name mclaughlin up there and jim edmonds yeah just give me give me the cardinals ones i don't watch enough baseball to i'm just not a huge joe buck fan myself same formation this time the wing back's going to be the motion man quarterback's going to keep it to the right side running against the grain and it's going to be a flock of eagles making the tackle after a four-yard gain all right so we'll go mba who you got an nba oh man nba i guess mike breen or reggie miller i'll take your word for it definitely not bill walton no i would not have let you say that we would have turned your microphone off what about dick by towel oh jay billis oh baby second and six gonna flip the formation under five seconds on the play clock they get it off they're gonna run underneath get back to the line of scrimmage and that's it looks like number eight in on the carry so a new running back there next week like we said we go to salem we'll let you know about a broadcast after that we come home for homecoming and senior night on the 16th of october versus the central cougars after that will be week nine at jerseyville i believe the panthers and that could be a do or die game once again gotta win them all out to get in the playoffs pass play to the left side to number one he's been out here all night a boy that's crazy [Applause] loss of one on the play and a great job by chase making the tackle i'm gonna give a big shout out to uh in case we're not going next week to salem to my sister who's getting married next weekend big congrats to her and dylan can't wait for next week fourth and eight now for the oilers from the 21-yard line three minutes and 20 seconds remaining on the ball game coach jermaine wants his players on the other side of the formation and gets him over there in time gonna be a pass play to the right side just a quick hitch can be caught at the 15 they get enough for a first down and it's going to be first and goal for the oilers [Applause] [Music] come on don't let them score another one here [Applause] wood river averaging seven points a game [Music] in columbia giving up what 25. scoring 20.

average going up average going down first and goal from the eight two minutes and 40 seconds remaining in the ball game eagles are gonna have seven men in the box they're gonna hand it off to number eight who's gonna bend it to the outside and he's gonna get in for a touchdown oilers [Applause] travis skinner [Applause] 42-12 east alton going to be going for two once again tell me did you do a push-up count tonight he did not he does a push-up count every week with the cheerleaders hand off to the right for the two-point conversion looks like he's stumbling in but might be short and he is and that brings the score to 42 to 12. eagles lead the oilers with 234 42 left in this week six matchup and i guess we can send it to a quick little break here and we'll come back and finish off this uh last 234.

[Applause] [Music] i have another pooch fair caught and kneeled by jay missler at the 29 yard line looks like we're going to have the second string offense out on the field as well [Music] i'd imagine the eagles keep it on the ground keep that clock moving and hopefully end up in a victory formation here are we done with whibby for tonight we're done with woody for the night [Music] so we're gonna have trips right bunch running back to the left side of the freshman vaguely he's going to hand the football off to the right side and try to cut up the field game four yards and rainwater it's dalton rainwater in on the carrick 34. jared i'm glad you're here because you look at these guys numbers and names one time you know who they are alex i can remember numbers and names from the 2007 team i can't remember some names from last year already i don't know numbers and names just they stick to me that's with every sport second and six doubles to the left side sniffer back left rainwater is going to take the handoff go right up the middle he's going to gain two and that's it like you said look like rainwater got a little bit of an early start there but not calling anything hey we didn't get any rainwater tonight that's a good thing so who's your player of the game you think tonight oh man i think i mean just from the flashes and the in the amount of yardage i mean mcconaughey was all over the place tonight on the offensive side of the ball um on the defensive side i mean you had hats to the football all night our whole d-line i think played really well the first couple drives didn't look very strong we were kind of letting wood river run all over us but second half adjustments uh we clamped down and made some plays on the defensive side of the ball and forced some punts which was nice the snap is left a little bit it's going to be a loss of one look like those just designed quarterback we're gonna have to punt it one more time as there's a 10 second differential i agree with you the defense the first couple drives a little sketchy but they ended up making the adjustments that they needed to coach tremaine made the adjustments he needed to and we get the stops and for the most part kept him out of the end zone tonight so i'm i'm thrilled with how the defense looked offensively again on the offensive line not too many sacks that i can think of off the top of my head so i think it's a good game by the eagles here we get a little lackadaisical starting the second quarter he'll take just so we uh get as much time off the clock as we can and this will likely be if the ball stays in play here like would be the last play of the game they might get one more offensive snap with nine seconds remaining and the eagles up 42-12 in this week six match-up vaguely on the punt dominic this time on the punt he's gonna get a big pun off from the 20 and it goes out of bounds at the 25 one second on the clock one second remaining eight seconds of hang time there [Applause] looking at our comments here cj schlemmer jack buck we will see you tomorrow night and then son so jack did that back in 2004 i believe it was and then we all know the 2011 david freeze david freeze and that was his son joe buck calling it so i think i could agree that i'd give you chills any time you watch people sleep on the hit by berkman that put us in that position i think that was the same game yeah i think we were down like we were like nine to six and he got like a a double and scored like two three runs we're talking baseball right now alex hey it's that time of year post season baseball cardinals got in losing to the cubs right now but that doesn't really matter [Applause] yeah 3-2 at least alton is going to run one more play paul's going to go up the middle to number eight he's going to try to make a couple men miss and he's going to be slung down to the ground and that's going to do it week six goes to the eagles as they beat the oilers on the mandy mcguire group scoreboard 42-12 improved to 2-1 in the conference 3-3 overall keeping themselves alive for the postseason gonna have to win out gonna have to win two of three if they want to get in so eagles got the job done here tonight a good game all the way throughout no real complaints and uh good thing we stayed healthy we're gonna have to come back next week at salem and that's a long bus ride up there for those kids and that's gonna be a big game because next week the next two weeks after that i mean you got bree central at home who's always uh always going to be a good game and then you got to go to jerseyville and you never know what can happen up there i know whenever i was a senior we played up there refs didn't really like us start walked into that building probably down 14-0 so anytime you uh you you gotta you gotta win win games and you just gotta rally the troops and you gotta get your guys ready for the next week you can celebrate this one tonight and this weekend and then monday you gotta come ready to work for a pretty good salem team that's a big thing though spirit sprints start on monday afternoon can't take any off at this point of the year i mean everybody's out for the same goal and the same thing and uh you just got to take it one week at a time so it's already week seven alex this year is flying by and next week is already week seven so three and three eagles now though back in the 500 position which is always a good sign and makes the coaches a lot happier makes the players a lot happier and definitely makes our job a little bit easier uh when we're winning games so great job tonight well that's going to do it for us from up in the booth like to thank you all for watching and tuning in once again support everybody who supports us go to our and if you would stand and join me in the pledge of allegiance [Music] of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice strong thank you you may be seated [Music] well thank you for having us here this morning students i can't wait to see what you're going to present but we've got a couple of things to do right before that so let's move to the item number two the vision of the avon community school board school board of school trustees um and this is a vision statement that our school board has crafted and created over the course of actually several iterations it says we want to be a nationally recognized district of choice that embraces all students and prepares them to grow and thrive for their future so that's our vision for avon community school corporation and as we do future meetings we will always start with this because it will align our thinking and our audience thinking into what we are trying to do um as the vision for avon community schools so let's move on to the next item which is the most fun which is celebrating orioles and i'll turn this over to dr wisdom thank you very much students we are so excited that you are here this is one of our favorite meetings that we get to do every year because we get to actually come into a school most of our meetings are not held in the school so it's really fun for us to actually be in a school especially the new and improved maple yeah that's right so we are really excited to get to see some of the great things you're doing and with that i'll introduce nikki harrison our principal at maple all right well welcome everybody dr winter wanted us to display some academic excellence which is so easy i just had to walk around and see what's happening in classrooms and so you will hear from a couple third graders they have um recently studied the fantastic undersea life of jackie stowe and i will start with goona and follow my teeth so they're going to share we have talked to the board as administrators about the rigor and the writing and how much the writing has improved so they are here to show you um i think you'll be impressed and amazed with the third grades um third grader essays come on up boys [Music] i told them they're feeling a little nervous but i told them it doesn't whatever they do is going to be the highlight because they're the children any boring meeting right did you guys talk with mrs brown about who who's going to go first do you want to go first um do you want to tell them what the question was that you were writing about and the question will ask why and how do scientists explode okay never hear that yes all right really loud read really loud like it should feel like you're yelling almost the scientists explore the sea because there could be unexpected places or creatures jack who still wants to kill us like other people until kustom's fun and underwater gadgets this shows how people can go underwater with people we found a shipwreck one telescope and it was full of one over two thousand two years old they tasted it and it was good people like these guys for faces like shipwrecks and people cases this week she still seems like the judges we changed a camera which had lights and it was airtight he made the driving saucer and that's became the seafood we made the dining salsa [Music] [Applause] are you ready i want you to read even louder like project that voice like recess voice scientists explore the sea because they want to research and observe new creatures jacques still was a scientist and he wanted antarctica to discover and study new creatures he saw penguins humped back well squid and he also went to africa to explore and observe sea animals there he saw and observed curious fish he was the first woman they had ever seen scientists explore to learn new things scientists use tools junkies still use the aqua lung to explore new sea animals the apple along the light jumping move around more freely john can still use the safely to go deeper into the sea and find even more sea animals that hide in the depths of the ocean the sea flu let someone go 500 meters into the sea the scientists use tools to explore all [Music] right is there anything that you boys want to share about that unit or that module and with wisdom that you loved about it when he was young ungod and he had to use these [Music] and then look where that took him that one tip from the doctor for your broken heart [Music] thank you um members i want you to take a look at this lovely handwriting boys [Music] okay which one is the diving belt diamond saucer those are so good did you i just learned three or four things about jack no i did not know i think that's great that's awesome well thank you so much for sharing you did a great job [Music] [Applause] and then you know fourth grade studies about indiana history and so they have recently made salt maps and they're going to hear some things about that i think they're all coming up at once right all right come on look every time get in the back [Laughter] in my class we learned about the three regions of indiana and the major rivers the three regions are northern and moraine and lakes a moraine is a land form left behind after a glacier central till plains is where avon is located also the capitals of the indianapolis silver hills and lowlands glaciers did not make it all the way south in indiana probably major league [Music] submit a map key to show where each item is located [Applause] [Music] good oh [Music] was a fourth grade teacher and she knew all about salt maps and indiana history so she was pleased with that today yeah i was glad to see your three planes there what you had yeah i bet your teachers have told you where you get the name hoosier and all that stuff and i'll still see my kids out and they'll say mrs simmons do you remember blah blah blah and i'll say yes i do you remember blah blah blah [Music] so good job fourth graders so good all right so those were our two academic shares oh i love it very nice that is very nice let's give all of our students another [Applause] um that is our academic excellence portion of the agenda we do have a few students that are going to stick around because for our stem presentation i know we've got a couple of students that are going to stay with us for that but the students that have already presented you're welcome to go back to class so thank you very much for being here [Applause] wow we're learning some great stuff that's maple is so huh is it crazy sock day at maple yeah i didn't get the memo i would have liked this one okay well we'll do some boring meeting stuff and then we'll hear some stuff about steps so uh board members the next item on the agenda is the consent agenda this includes approval of minutes uh approval of claims and payroll august transfer memo professional services agreement the approval of the personnel report disposal of equipment uh several overnight field trip requests and the approval of the donation report so i will entertain a motion i'll make the motion i know that the board of school trustees approved the minutes for the regular meeting on september 13 2021 working session on september 27 2021 executive session on september 27 2021 claims two zero zero six we will take uh yeah we'll show you a picture of her in a minute let's take an audible uh vote um and ankle heart yes anita greg yes cindy yes and i vote yes that uh motion passes five to zero thank you everybody i do have a question it's probably too late but on the festival [Music] and they're going to arrive sunday i believe at 5.
⚗ AI-reconstructed · cite from original above
where is that arrival going to be back at school or at the trip i figured it's back at school but i wasn't real sure that's why i'm asking i believe that would be the case okay thank you okay we will move on to item number five which is comments from the board president first of all i'd like to just thank um everyone at maple for being here for allowing us to come and invade your school today i can't tell you how much this recharges our batteries because sometimes with um you know school boardsmanship you forget about really why you do this and seeing students and their learning power and their learning potential being in a room like this where i just want to play with all the stuff i'm dying to go look at those dinosaurs but i'm going to refrain um it just really is gratifying we love to do this and i thank you so much for allowing us to be here today uh okay the next item on the agenda is public comments to the board uh this is the part of our meeting where our public can uh use three minutes to um make their comments to the board uh please refrain from using any um personal names if you uh would and also just we used to ask for um your address we decided that really wasn't a safe practice so we changed it now to ask you to just state your name and just affirm that you are living in that avon community so i will open this up to public comments to the board okay i have a comment and if you don't mind i'd like the children to leave you because what i have to say is very sensitive nature um okay i mean they still have a presentation but i understand yeah i'm sure you do um my name is joseph daly thank you and i do live in the avon uh school district um i dispatched an email last night to the board members and to um the principal and vice principal thorpe beth tharp of the avon high school um and before i begin my comments i'd like to approach the board and show a picture the picture you see is my daughter erin she's 17 years old and she's a junior at avon high school um have any of the board members been able to read my email from last night i did not see it okay last night i dispatched an email to the avon school board members and principal matt shockley and vice president of vice principal beth tharp regarding the events of the last 10 days after my daughter aaron was assaulted on friday september 24th at the high school i've already asked how many of you read that email in that email there are a couple small items that that i was wrong about the first thing i want to clarify that friday in my email i said it was miss wagner and actually as a high school counselor miss michelle wilson and the second one i want to clarify is that i had a phone conversation with dr willis on thursday and at that time he told me that he wasn't sure if the board members were aware of this assault on the avon high school website is an acronym a r e accountable respectful engaged and the with the implication that those words apply to both staff and students i can use these same letters to describe my little girl academic resilient and empowered aaron has always maintained above average grades nominated for the junior national honor society where she got to meet senator john crane and as far as i'm concerned remains on the av honor roll at the high school resilient actually her resiliency and her empowerments are best described in our own words for a very recent essay assignment from our english teacher just days after this attack i have read it and although i can't provide the members with a copy today upon request and with their permission i'd be willing to provide anybody who asks for a copy of that her thoughts and emotions are almost tangible as she writes about how this student made her feel violating her privacy caused an embarrassment and as she describes in her essay stealing her light but aaron apparently empowers herself by not letting him victimize her reinforcing her inner strength and taking back her life for a 16 year old that's an impressive and prevailing attitude it's a parent's nightmare to face the fact that you weren't there to protect one of your own myself and my wife and my family now rely on you to deliberate and render a decision to expel this individual from avon schools it is the only way to protect aaron and possibly other female students from this thank you so much thank you other public comments okay could we ask the students to come back thank you good job thank you all right we are going to go on to the next item on our agenda which is unfinished business and we're going to turn it over to dr sullivan there he is i haven't not located you yet this is our enrollment report it is um our enrollment currently is at 10 171 students pre-k through 12.
⚗ AI-reconstructed · cite from original above
pre-k is up uh students and 171 at this point means that we are 264 students ahead of where we were last year at the same time and actually data collection for adm funding will be closing today today today okay thank you board members any questions about the enrollment report thank you dr sullivan the next item is cost savings and efficiencies mrs glass good morning hello lord good morning acsc received over eighteen thousand seven hundred four dollars and eighty one cents in rebates between january and august 2021 from invoice pay who we use to pay our vendors via credit card and direct deposit what was that number again i'm sorry 18 700 4.81 okay fourth of a teacher we appreciate that thank you thank you uh next item on the agenda is the new business and we will start with a presentation on acsc strategic goals with our elementary stem program this is all day yeah and i'm actually just going to introduce that and they are going to get to do the presentation so um hi we're excited to be here this morning i know you had the opportunity last month to hear from mr gatlin and from students at pine tree about their excitement around stem and innovation but today we thought we would continue that conversation and we have um steph duda and sarah tuttle and they are two elementary innovation coordinators and i'm sure they'll explain kind of what the role is and how this is helping um grow stem across avon schools hi so i just want to start off by saying thank you for letting us have this opportunity to have an equitable stem experience for all the avon kids it's such an amazing thing walking into schools that have never had this program before seeing their excitement and seeing the things that they're learning um that they haven't been able to really experience on this level of it so we just wanted to say thank you for that um and i am not even clicking am i clicking you can click [Music] okay um so this is our strategic uh goal for our innovation program is to create systematic and purposeful innovation opportunities to develop critical thinkers um and that's those four c's of stem are just there in a nutshell um to be able to have them collaborate and communicate and just to create those 21st century learners um that we are doing so we have molly and felix and noah a fourth grader a second grader and a kindergartner and as we go through um our things they're gonna share their experiences with them we just have a picture show a slideshow here just to show you guys some of the amazing things that they have done um steph and i create all the lesson plans for the innovation teachers in the classrooms that teach we also act like coaches to them and help them we co-teach with them as well as just provide that level of support we also look for funding opportunities and things to help us provide those experiences um these are our academic focuses that we are working on right now um it hits science standards our science standards as well as our computer science standards so we're always making sure that we have those standards as our basis for what we're going off of there's lots of cool things out there that we could do um and as long as they hit one of our indiana standards then we're making sure that we get those done all right so kindergarten this is do you remember doing this noah when you made the chickaboom boom trees yes so kids learned about balance and then they engineered a device to have to hold the whole alphabet so they had to they were just given the supplies and they had to think through and brainstorm and talk to each other and by the end they were all able to do it um here they were learning about the leaves and the rainforest do you remember doing that and do you remember what happens when you put the water on the rainforest leaves yes what happens it sucks up yeah it sticks on the top right and the other ones suck in right so would indiana leaves be able to survive in the rainforest no no way right okay do you want to tell them something else you did in kindergarten that you loved um it was all about to sing well we did some of that do you remember what you said out there um [Music] we put the marbles in to see if it floated and did yours float no you're and then what else did we learn about in kindergarten where the animals lived remember um we need subtle food and water yeah [Music] so we focused on habitats and the different types of habitats and then the kindergartners concluded with um kind of designing their own habitat um in first grade this was the highlight of first grade dissecting worms um they learned all about worms and how um well i mean the crop and the game and what the crap in so the whole week was about uh learning the outsides of the worms and they got to play with real live worms and then they at the end of the week they got to dissect worms and they were all concerned that they were the worms they played with [Music] also learned about the cycles of the moon and then they um created lunar landers that they designed so we've got the engineering process going in and they tested them and collected the data they started at three feet four feet and six feet and uh the goal was to make the lunar lander land flat and keep the marshmallows which were astronauts safe which is on friday a little girl told me they were marstrinath yes i like that um in second grade felix remember doing all the fred adventures that was the very first thing you did so fred was this worm that was going through places in indiana and they had to engineer different designs to protect him and so this was here at maple that might have been your class felix but um here they were creating a floatation device to protect them and then here they were their second cycle they were learning all about frog life cycle and they created these origami frogs and they had to test the hopping to see how it would work and they measured and graphed and then felix i'm going to jump to yours so you can share sorry to put it in the wrong spot oh that's way too far all right felix you want to share what you did at home so i put two kind of eggs in water with food coloring wow can you tell why you did that so i can test how permeable the eggshell is and then the regular egg without the eggshell and why did you do that [Music] [Laughter] because why did you do that what did you what was the permeability why did you want to learn about or why did you want to test this at home we learned about which animal in second grade frogs okay and how are what is permeable about the frogs and so you can see so which egg was able to take more color the one with the shell and the one without that yeah or the one with them it actually went through that the whole egg inside so wow this is one we did at school but then he went home and did it as well at home so he could see it in real life in real time so very cool felix all right and then we will third grade um has been learning all about space because in that we we're trying as much as we can to match our science standards with our written wisdom as well and third grade is going to be learning about space next and so um the students engineered a stomp rocket launcher and then they designed different rockets then they tested them and we went outside and they got to um like that yeah i know but it's so cool right anyways well we'll teach you when you're in third grade okay bud um we also really wanted to have a focus on um people of color and women in stem and so they learned about catherine johnson and mae jemison um and they um built space capsules and engineered them and designed them and so this is just kind of their concluding with that and then this is fourth grade you ready to talk about it all right do you remember what this is oh this looks like a heart it is so we had um the fourth graders we were learning about the heart and we so our other stem teacher she would put like skittles and we would have to go travel through the hearts and and then we would go put the skittles in like um like a vein or something we would come back through the other way of the heart and would do that over and over again to represent blood cells yeah and um we focused on that for a week and then we switched rotation and then what you do next and then we did the solar ovens which you would you tried to make it the box as hot as possible and you put an egg butter chocolate and a crown in there and we see how hot it got to see if it would melt or cook the egg and melt the butter and chocolate and then um we put this little flap up so that um like the sun will reflect right onto the butter the um egg and the chocolate and some people taped it so that i would say but what we did since we were outside we found a stick and we kind of put it so that it would like stay instead of go down and the clear wrap was poor so you could see it while oh yeah smarter thank you so tell us what happened we're dying to know did the egg cook um it got white like the yolk kind of turned white a little bit um and the butter melted it didn't melt the chocolate got a little bit warmer started to melt and the crown didn't do anything yeah that makes sense wow where's the crayon i don't know maybe it's hard to see it was rolling around yeah oh my gosh so moving forward we're gonna uh work on robotics and coding and those are kind of our next things our next steps going into it um but once again we just wanted to say thank you it's been an amazing opportunity to be able to see our kids just all have these experiences i was the stem teacher at cedar for a couple of years so it was nice it's nice to be able to see all the kids in our district getting the same experiences getting those hands on like super i just love it yeah goosebumps because it's super exciting i just it's hands-on that it's a special they love because they get it and they're going to be loud yeah and make a mess adamant adamant this board has been adamant that we are going to provide stem and innovation opportunities innovation labs in all of our locations just because yeah we see the excitement and the learning um and it's important that students get all those opportunities all right so noah did you decide do you want to be a scientist when you grow up or do you think you want to be someone else that's okay what do you want to be i'm um [Music] i like your name the best because i have a grandson named felix but he's just a little baby um so did you decide you wanted to be a scientist or do you want to be something else something else okay [Music] i wanted to be a science teacher oh amazing yeah that we would love to have you come back and be a science teacher in avon and show all the kids that are young and what you learned when you were in stem it would be awesome yeah well let's give them a big hand [Applause] to share um appreciation to steph and sarah for all their leadership [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] gracious to let us use this room for the first month here at maple so big big rental closer [Applause] [Music] that was awesome i like to see the team work that's often hard to strive with so many kids working together yeah you could tell they were hands on they were having fun and um that's good to see so thank you teachers for that thank [Applause] thank you okay the next item under new business is item b this is the kobe 19 update dr windham thank you as has been our practice for the last few months at each board meeting i give you an update of where things stand with covet 19 in our schools you can see here that we have continued our downward trajectory and positive cases this is an overall summary of positive cases the stars represent when the board took action in mid to late august requiring masks and we have seen positive cases go down since that time this data is through september 25th and that week we had 32 positive cases because we update our data on friday afternoons friday evenings i wasn't able to get um this last week reflected on this chart but we were down to 31 cases last week so again a little tip down um just as a reminder at our height the week of august 15th which is that peak we had 82 positive cases in our school district and we've gone down every week since then um this breaks apart that data into um grade levels so that you can kind of see the impact of course the most significant impact has been at our middle schools which peaked in that time period of mid-august with almost 30 positive cases in one week and then they have continued kind of that downward trajectory since that time and you can see the other schools have had ups and downs but are generally heading in a positive direction since mid-august we also of course look closely at the number of quarantines knowing that ultimately we want students in school in person and in that period of time in mid-august we had far too many students quarantined as the board knows at our highest the week of august 15th we had 1159 students quarantined in our district and then the decision to require mass as well as the governor's executive order which allowed us to not need to quarantine if students are massed has allowed us to really maintain much lower quarantines and keep more students in school so we quarantined 72 students the last week that is reflected on this chart last week that number was down to 51 students that is still hard because that's 51 students who were not able to be in person but significantly lower than what we experienced before uh so some next steps that we have been working through um we know we are coming up on fall break and our uh past history has been that after a break we see a spike in cases because because people go off on vacations and get together with friends and do some things like that that might lead to more spread so we anticipate continuing to have mass required when we return from from fall break we are working on some updated mask protocols and getting some input from various groups about those protocols and it's my goal to bring those before you on november 8th for your consideration getting input from parents teachers principals and of course our county department of health some of the things that we've been talking about as we look at those considerations about updated mass protocols is basing decisions on the color coding that is done by the state right now for all counties across indiana we are orange right now we had a week or two where we were red and now we've bounced back down to orange and so we're looking at can we make some decisions based uh around that that would guide us in in our masking and then also one of the things that we're looking at is can we have some data that would allow us to make a school by school decision so perhaps in some schools we could have some criteria where maths would be required and another is not so those are some of the considerations that we are looking at and will be coming back in november uh for a discussion with you all and with that i'm certainly glad to answer any questions the only other thing i will say is i was on a call this morning hendricks regional health uh as we saw this spike in delta variants hendricks regional health started a monday morning weekly call with hendricks county superintendents and they did say they are hearing that the vaccine for ages 5 to 11 may may become something that we uh hear more about even this week um and so they were um starting to to get hear some information from the state that that is looking positive and that vaccines would be made available to younger age groups in the near future and hoping that we would get some information from the state or federal government as early as this week about that any questions um can you remind me what the dates of fall break are when does it start and end it starts a week from today and it then we are back uh october 25th okay that's a monday so that's first day back in school correct yes we are back on monday the 25th okay and so um it would be our desire to look at that give us a couple of days or weeks to reacclimate after the spikes that we have seen in the previous year for those breaks and that on november the 8th there would be discussion about um what does the updated mass protocol look like that's correct thank you or members any other questions comments i'll have a comment just for a little bit more kind of depth of the goal so ann and i have been talking kind of being the opposite spectrums of this perspective on the board we also attended the meetings that scott had with some of the community members who have been vocal in this area and um even though we find ourselves a little bit different in some places and i do have a shared goal of what we bring or what scott brings to the board on the 8th would be something that would be concrete enough that we can stop talking about this in terms of a plan so if you know if the county is this or if the school quarantines get to this or if a number of positives gets to this we put the masks back on and not have basically have a policy it wouldn't technically be a policy but more be a plan that would be a little bit more concrete so that hopefully after the eighth we know how we're going to navigate the rest of the school year and we're not going to talk about it anymore and we're going to go on to the good business of the school district and try to focus on the other things that's the goal thank you other comments um hearing none we'll move on to item c which is project here uh dr sullivan thank you pursuant to indiana code 2026 before school corporation finances more than a million dollars to build repair or alter school building it must hold a public hearing at which it explains the potential value of the project to the school corporation and the community the hearing is open to public comment so i will go over the project to open the meeting okay so this will be a project hearing um that will require that will enable public hearing and you'll go over that i'll uh start this meeting or this hearing i'm sorry 1001. uh okay go ahead educational meetings at pine tree elementary we're looking at the addition of five kindergarten classrooms an expansion of the cafeteria the renovation of the music area central plant upgrades which means the chiller expansion and hvac and furniture this allows you to see something that we've spoken about before how we've had to repurpose rooms and how there are very few of any open rooms at cedar hickory pine tree maple river birch or sycamore again at pine tree there are no open rooms we have kindergartens in a smaller room that's being repurposed and we also have a second repurpose of kindergarten in a computer lab enrollment projections at pine tree pine tree is the last of these small schools and hasn't been expanded though it has had a refreshment of the media center and the innovation classroom also and that projection is a new subdivision will be developed on 100 south 110 homes and then millstone this area is supposed to go to hickory however with fair wood developing sending millstone students to pine tree will allow greater capacity project budget and working with one of our partners we were able to project some costs again the needs are kindergarten rooms five of them at four million one hundred and sixty four thousand dollars uh cafeteria expansion at three hundred and forty seven thousand dollars the music renovation at three hundred and eighty nine thousand dollars and then those upgrades to hvac is 475 000 furniture at 100 000 and the cost of issuance for the bond will be 100 000 totaling 5 million 575 thousand dollars this again is a picture that we reviewed before at our last board meeting let you know in pine tree some of the repurposed area this is actually in the front hallway at prime tree where they do some small group breeding uh over to the left it's a way for them to be able to separate and then over to the right you can see some of the resources again this is the front hallway so that they can do some kind of spreading out so the kids can do some small groups again this is an overview project this plan was created with one of our partners to let you see what we are potentially going to do with the cafe expansion the music area or in your uh lower right hand corner uh those kindergarten classrooms and then that mechanical area which would be the hvac that we were talking about on the upgrade and uh this is the same this this looks familiar to you because this is the same thing that we did at sycamore where we added on to the front for kindergarten we needed in order to expand the cafeteria the only option is to take the stage which is also the music room so that becomes the expansion of the cafeteria and then needing to create or recreate a music room so that has worked really well at um sycamore that has allowed them some additional cafeteria space and also the music teacher actually prefers it because she doesn't have to hear all the cafeteria noise uh while she's trying to do music class so um it that has worked well for us and you might talk a little bit about why fourth the fourth grade wing is not included and what the plan is for that uh fourth grade win would be a a second phase if we decided to go to that second phase we know there's going to be a bulge in the fourth grade and so you can also see another mechanical area that would go there we have a ell room that would go in there and so in our second phase uh maybe another upcoming bond uh we would have that fourth grade area there what's the timing of that anticipated i think that depends on some of the developments that are being tossed around so you know i think um part of what we are looking at is some of these developments that are in process being discussed and we just need to kind of map out when that would when that would uh need to be impacted so i think what is a little confusing about this slide is that it appears from this slide that pine tree is a section school which it is not um so currently it's a four section school and this would allow us a new section at every grade level um including fourth grade when that next phase would occur um my question about this kindergarten expansion is that like sycamore the setback of the front of that school allowed for that to take place at sycamore without creating any infrastructure parking lot and driving issues does this allow the same to set back as far enough that you would have a sidewalk right here but then the parking lot is beyond that yep to the south most of what you see there is still like green space right now so it would just be there is a roundabout over here and then there is the world war ii memorial so this will move that slightly closer is that right to that memorial yes but it would it would all be on green space it yeah it would not encroach into the parking area or anything like that the the biggest challenge on pine tree that is different from sycamore is if you think about what we did at sycamore and hickory we expanded out the innovation center because they had green space out this direction pine tree does not pine trees bus lot goes right up to the building so that's why this does look a little bit different from sycamore or degree on that side because we have to go to the that would be north we have to go to the north instead of out west like we would have at the other buildings yeah but can accomplish the same goal well there's a out there's a back entrance bus entrance and car entrance i believe and so that would not be infringed upon by that potential later fourth grade development that's correct and at sycamore and hickory remember we we needed those spaces immediately because of redistricting we knew those schools needed to be five section schools right away this is a little bit different because we know growth will happen gradually at pine tree and so that's why as we were kind of talking through this project and fitting it within the amount that we can issue in depth right now we didn't feel that we needed all of these classrooms right away the way that we did at sycamore and hickory we can kind of grow into these how many classrooms classrooms are there right now four they're four and they're pretty well evenly enrollment oh yes when does this get bad i have a question go ahead ann um room k2 and k3 are do they have outside walls i just want to make sure they have windows because it's hard to tell with this sketch yes they would have windows okay i couldn't tell if there was a building or there was continued building behind it okay thank you yeah i think that building are you talking about the kindergarten area that is uh there's actually um you can't figure out what the whole square is they are the outside wall and i know we've really wanted to make sure that all of our rooms have outdoor um you know they can they can see outside especially in the winter when we have so few hours of daylight so i just wanted to ensure that they have windows so they can see outside yeah that box behind the kindergarten classrooms that at one point was a fenced-in playground for kindergarten so now a part of it is still fenced in so i believe that's what that is that's not a part of the building so they would have windows thank you and then mr dana asked you know kind of the timeline um the next step with this would be working with dan rollins to kind of go through that bidding process like we've done with our other projects right so we're not at a place where we would say exactly when we get out but i could let you know probably by the end of today it's about talking with dan the next meeting is fine okay but you're talking about this being built next summer with the supply issues that would be the goal that it would be started next summer it would not be completed for the start of next school year so that's where dr sullivan and mr rollinson are working as we've talked about in some previous meetings we know we've got some buildings that are going to need portables um because we we need time to build some of these classrooms and do some of these projects so definitely not for the start of next school year but it should be underway the construction should be underway okay so the board has always been very mindful of making sure that we're able to show financially where we stand and in the future where we have a cliff of our drop off of debt so you can see in 2022 the orange represents the 5.575 million dollar additional gl bond and then from there you can see how it cliffs all the way to 2041 i believe at the bottom this again is another financial uh projection uh shows you if we had the uh high school project with the 89 million then this 5.575 gl bond where it would be depending on which scenario we go with with 13 years of repayment or 19 years of repayment or one year of repayment for this bond and or two in a a month repayment uh or members any other questions the only question i have is really about given our current situation in the economy the way that our assessed valuation the expansion of that tax base in avon i would be interested in baker tilly rendering an opinion about on our general obligation bond fundings like this doesn't it make more sense to retire those earlier because we will have the taxpayer bandwidth given all those positive factors i just said versus retiring the bond debt later i think that we i would love to hear a presentation from baker tilly on the entirety of our um bonds and our portfolio just to see if there is a strategy that we need to employ based on current conditions that might help us in the longer term or remember any other questions okay i will open up for public comment on the project only the project hearing okay thank you i will adjourn the hearing at 10 13.

so let's move on to project resolution dr sullivan uh after the public hearing is closed of course the board is presented with a 1028 of project resolution for consideration um some boards read the resolution allowed others passed a resolution out to the public if requested the board will establish that or this resolution establishes the estimated cost of the project the tax impact and the timing of the impact i move the board of school trustees approve the project resolution as presented second um before we do that should we read the project resolution you don't you're not required to we could certainly give it out if someone requested that okay so it will be available for anyone that would like to inspect it that's awesome so motion by gray second by cindy okay i'm going to pull the board and yes approve anita yes greg yes cindy yes and i vote yes that motion passes five to zero thank you okay uh we will move on to the preliminary board resolution then dr sullivan this preliminary board resolution establishes the maximum amount that's going to be borrowed the maximum term of repayment and the maximum interest rate i move that the board of school trustees the first preliminary buy and resolution uh motioned by anita seconded by greg is there any discussion polling the members and yes anita yeah great yes cindy yes and i vote yes that resolution passes five to zero thank you thank you for your work on this project uh the final item is the reimbursement resolution dr sullivan uh if the school corporation pays any preliminary costs related to this project in advance of receiving the bond proceeds it will be able to reserve its ability to be reimbursed from the bond proceeds after the closing i believe that the board of school trustees approved the reimbursement resolution as presented second motioned by anita seconded by cindy is there any further discussion following the board members and yes anita yes greg yes cindy yes and i vote yes that resolution passes 5-0 thank you we're on our way next item on the agenda is a desktop computer purchase for srs3 we'll ask you to step out from behind the camera mr promise and present to us please thank you thank you avon community school corporation recommends the approval of the contract with matrix integration to purchase 500 desktop computers and 850 monitors using sr3 federal funds and those quotes are from the indiana qpa contract with hp thank you when will we hopefully be receiving these this school year supply is still a challenge for us um and yes we anticipate this school year but the time frame is is unknown okay um with optimism prior to christmas wow that would be good okay for both the computers and the monitors correct wow that is good and what grades will this service these computers are primarily for our teacher desktops which is why there's a discrepancy between the number of monitors we're purchasing and the number of desktops we're purchasing our new standard for teacher machines um is uh installation of the desktop and two monitors uh 250 of those computers will be used for labs where we are only installing one monitor however so that's why there's a difference in the quantities i was surprised to see anybody buying desktops what am i missing uh we are our standard for our teachers is that a teacher has a mobile device which is a laptop computer that they carry around go anywhere with and also a more powerful desktop computer that is attached to the local input plate in the classroom the ceiling speakers in the classroom and as a machine that is tied to that classroom because we have substitute teachers come in we have multiple people used in the classroom for different purposes and it is best to have a computer that is really assigned to the classroom at the teacher's station for instruction whether you might have told me mr boss will there be a hands-on computer in each classroom for the student or so um in grades 5 through 12 all of our students have laptops assigned to them and we have uh recently uh made the first round of purchases for student laptops um and carts to be used in our elementary school okay and so the model that we're going with or classroom set type models for students to use from the laptop cartridges okay so they're on wheels then and correct you check them out and you sign them up from how long you need them yes but our strategy in that case is that we will have uh so much density with laptops that a classroom set really can be kept in a classroom level good deal and those were purchased also with they were awesome yes good news i moved that the board of school trustees approved the desktop computer purchase agreement with matrix integration as presented second motion by cindy seconded by anita is there any further discussion or questions following the board members and yes anita yes greg yes cindy yes and i vote yes the motion passes five zero thank you very much mr promise thanks for also running our virtual meeting today okay we'll move on to board member items i'll start with ann would you like to start sure um good morning everyone um i just um first must say it's been a real joy to have a board meeting so heavily geared towards academics i know we get caught up in a lot of other items that are also very necessary but it's just been a real joy to hear the children's voices and talking about a subject that's very near and dear to us and that's stem and then of course the stem report so thank you for that and for this board meeting i also want to thank our community it was a generous donation report and um i um just thought it was um um incredibly generous and i would there was one item i wouldn't mind having some updated information on and there was a item from juvenile detention and i'm not sure what that means so sometime we could just um whether it's in a boardwalk i would just be interested in um some more information on that um thank you for continuing to look at our growth i know we're looking as a community at two large developments possibly and so i'm glad we're really looking at pine tree and just trying to see how we can best meet the needs of growth and so i'm glad we're keeping pine tree at the forefront and now taking action um to expand it and give space to all of our new students so thank you for that and think that we're staying on top of all of our technology needs you know with growth and changing technology that is such a daunting task so thank you mr ramos for keeping up on all that that's it hope everyone has a great fall break thank you thank you anita i was certainly impressed with all the students today and i always am and noah's certainly going to go a long way [Music] and i want to thank mr promise uh for the report on the desktop computers and the essence right there and i'm excited about pioneer [Music] uh mr dana all right well first of all principal harrison thanks for hosting us you are welcome and um i'd probably speak for all of us when i say this is absolutely my favorite meeting of the year and this one was even refreshing because we actually as ann said we're talking about education so um thank you so much for doing this and we'll be back next month too um just a couple of points um i sent an email last night as we're talking about the high school expansion with the growing property i've been sitting in the background kind of watching that and it hit me when i saw the video i'm a very visual learner and hit me when i saw the visual last night that we're landlocking high school now we're done um we are talking about with this um 89 million expansion that we're working on right now getting that high scope to 4 000 which will outgrow by 28 or 29 i just wonder if we need to continue to have a discussion about what's next for those of us who may have kids or grandkids come yeah at high school my felix will be starting in three years so yeah um but i just looked at that and i thought wow you know 10 years is not that far away and with the way that math was drawn we may be too late but i was very concerned about that map just because we're we're done like there's gonna be anything else that goes on that footprint after this so maybe we could have some conversation about that and be thinking about that as or maybe just filming on what your plans are with that because that was concerning to me um but the positive i want to hand on is we're almost at fall break um and i want to thank the teachers nobody thought that it was going to be as hard as it was we all went into last june thinking we got through it it's going to be great 21 22 is going to be normal and we made it like in the tunnel and then we got hit by the train um so let's just make sure that the teachers know that we recognize that this wasn't as easy it was supposed to be but we did get everybody's two fall break and we just keep pushing thank you cindy uh i too would like to thank maple elementary students and teachers and principals who have achieved academic success that was obvious with the kids eagerness and their visiting with ship each other and their explanations and the little boy that was holding the paper i said kim i said look at his handwriting i mean it was all in black it was so nice he didn't see smudges and you know all the sometimes kids you see so thank you for that they did a great job um one thing that caught my eye too well two field trips that are scheduled for high school i have a question our elementary's ever going to achieve or do we wait to see what happens right now we're waiting okay thank you the donors that i know was brought up i added all that up what they totaled and it was six thousand three hundred and twelve dollars and sixty three cents i was just blown away by those donations uh i want to thank the donors for that very much appreciated and i too would like to pick up on what ann said that i kind of could figure out where money other money was going but that was just a fantastic um donation um i got a question about white oak the enrollment looks great there especially at white oak i believe it said 264 students did i read that right at white oak now is that explain to me how that goes is that total enroll okay do we have room for more or do we have a working list or so right now no because they are working they they are in one wing while the other wing is being renovated but that should be done this week because over fall break they're moving into the new wing okay so um we were very limited in space this year because we knew we needed to have that kind of orchestration of renovating that building with kids present but eventually we will have room increased capacity so we can do more than 264 right yep okay and when did you say mr wind and that might be enough after fall break they're moving they're moving over to the new classroom so that'll be a fun fun time for preschool about how many students are in a preschool classroom so it depends there are two different kinds of preschool classrooms there's developmental preschool which is kids with more significant disabilities okay so those would maybe have 10 to 12 students in a developmental preschool and then we also have community preschool both half day and full day that that would have 16 17 18 students in it looks more like a kindergarten yeah you know that size of classroom what they're doing does not look like kindergarten but sure numbers it feels a little bit more like a kindergarten classroom and the preschool ages are three two to five okay all righty thank you uh i said this earlier but i want to thank mrs alday the four k through four stem teachers and the students uh lots of smiles and lots of teamwork happening with the hands-on learning excited to hear about renovations at pine tree i know it's been around a while i think my dad was around when it was being built so it's been around a while i have a former student's dad that teaches there so i kind of keep in touch with them too and see how things are going i'm sure the staff and the students are going to appreciate the expansion computers are always needed by students and staff thank you for that i especially like i know i'm old school but the ones what do you call them jase the ones sit on your desk i'd say i don't remember the time i don't even know the talk but thank you very much to end enjoy fall break teachers and staff members uh rest and relax uh well thank you for hosting us i really appreciate it nikki and um i'm sure it's disruptive to your weak but it really recharges our batteries to be here so um thank you jen for giving up your classroom for this morning and hopefully you'll be able to this really is a cool classroom i mean i like it and obviously it's adjacent to the olc so um i love to see students just getting excited about things but i really love to see students getting excited about innovation um simply because it i think science and innovation really ignites um in children a passion that they may not have known that they had which is why i was asking each of the students did this make you feel like maybe you want to look into this as the thing that you do when you grow up as your career choice and though they they did not um i do believe that um innovation has been critical to a lot of things that we've done in avon to achieve at such a high academic level um and so you know as i said during that presentation innovation will be in every single one of our class in of our schools in an equitable fashion because it just this board that resonates with us and we feel that it's crucial that we continue to move forward with that um i would i'm also excited about the pine tree update it does feel like we've come through the whole gamut now um of of our smaller schools although i don't know how 500 built for 500 students seem small but um of our smaller schools that will be the last one to really update and touch so i'm excited to see that happening um and i want to thank everybody that has been involved in gathering the data for the covet covenupting the group that is pulled together um for trying to find a path forward and i feel that exactly what we said this has been the rugged start of a school year we didn't even think about we thought oh this is this is going to be great and then of course in many ways for many of us this has been a rougher start than the last two have been so thank you everyone for staying the course in that and being brave and doing what's right and also just getting um that day in day out routine for our kiddos we know that that is crucial to them so thank you everyone for doing that and i wish everyone a great fall break i know it's going to be um busy we'll still continue to do the business of the schools but hopefully all of you will get to have at least a little bit of valentine uh dr whitman thank you just a few things um mrs engelhart mrs simmons you asked about the four thousand dollar grant from juvenile juvenile detention thank you that was uh chief liday wrote a grant and those were for vape detectors at avon high school so vaping is something that every high school in the country is struggling with and this was a way that we could really work to try to deter that and intervene as quickly as possible so we really really appreciate chief lyda always looking for those kinds of resources for us a couple of other things mr dana your point of the high school and continued growth there we have been meeting regularly to start to get to that design phase because in our timeline in december we bring you a design proposal on every one of those we block out here's the next phase of the high school that's not included in this project we know this project gets us to 4 000 but we're also constantly looking at when we need to get to 5 000 or if we need to get to 5 000 where does that happen at and so while if if the grundy property does get developed that is you know something that we won't ever be able to to get back or you know to to build on we really are looking at making sure we've got that footprint off to be able to accomplish that so i we can certainly share some of those with you now but they are constantly being redesigned re-drafted uh what what where we had a meeting just this morning they're starting to we're starting to meet with some of the different stakeholder groups at the high school because right now the plans that we have crafted are really just the district leadership and mr shockley and his administrative team we haven't taken it down to the teacher level and so that's really the next step is meeting with the cafeteria manager meeting with the teachers meeting with those kinds of groups to make sure that we've got a solid plan so those plans are coming along but we will absolutely make sure that we we can accommodate future growth there um i want to thank mrs harrison and mrs mccollum for letting us crash your school but also you know it is hard to be principal and assistant principal in covid for sure but then when you add on we essentially took this school from uh 360 370 student school to a what is it in a summer you know doubling the size of this school and all the renovation and construction that went along with it so i really appreciate mrs harrison and mrs mccollum because they have really helped navigate a very challenging period of time and a whole range of issues but to add a significant construction project on with everything else that they've been navigating is uh is really a significant accomplishment and i know they are eager if you would like to take a tour of the building since there are parts that just opened a few weeks ago and parts that you maybe haven't seen after the meeting we're glad to to do a tour if there are things that you would like to see around the new maple because it is a beautiful building so uh that's all i have dr sullivan no uh you know everything's gonna say it's always good to be able to get out into the building this is a great looking building some great students that came out just appreciate the opportunity awesome thank you everyone will adjourn at 10 37

good evening let's call the order roll call please report here christopher espinoza here here [Music] we have a quorum let's stand for the pledge i pledge allegiance to the law of the united states of america and to a republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all okay i believe we start with student perspectives i'll invite courtney up for north high here you gotta flip it on i think there you go there we go okay hi good evening everyone thank you so much um for allowing us to recognize some students tonight and um tonight we're going to present to you our girls track team from the spring of 2021 and i'm going to let them come up here and talk all about their accomplishments but i would first like to introduce our coaches matt maletich and tim mcdonald and they're going to introduce the girls too and the girls are going to talk a little bit about some amazing things that they did last spring so thank you all all right uh thank you for having us first of all i'm matt meltic i'm the uh head coach for the girls track team uh just to introduce a couple people we have veronica lesotho over here veronica's junior this year she's an excellent sprinter on our team we got claire pine next to her she's a junior as well she's an excellent distance runner we have carly harkness another excellent distance runner she's a sophomore she actually was on the all-state 4x8 last year as a freshman and we have marley kowalski right here she's an excellent triple jumper her sister l is right here al is an excellent uh long jumper and sprinter and then they just walked in right here is abby straft she was also all-state last year in the four by one she's a junior uh thank you for uh having us uh it's an honor to be here uh this team truly should be recognized because we've said many many times this is the best team we might ever see and it was the best team we ever had it was a weird year to have such a great team but this team persevered through challenges around every corner as everybody knows contact tracing just the sheer stress of competing during kovid and they overcame everything else going to go through some of the accomplishments for us here's elle kowalski hello i'm al kowalski i am going to talk about a few of our accomplishments there are quite a few i'm super excited to be here and speak on behalf of my team i'm also super proud to be a part of this team after everything we've accomplished last year as you know our season was cut short in 2020 as well as 2021 but we seriously outdid all expectations for this year and we came out even stronger than anyone thought we ever could um just to kind of put it in perspective since the beginning of the season up until the state meet we did not lose a single single meet um that includes our conference um champion and our sectional so at the west suburban silver conference we had a historic amount of points scored which was 183 points and donners grove north athletes scored first in 11 out of the 18 events um a division one athlete who went here kind of should know she also now holds the west suburban silver conference triple jump record which is super impressive and we're definitely going to miss her next year but we'll we'll persevere through for sure next was sectionals this was the first time we have won sectionals since 1999 so it's definitely been a while but it was super exciting to be a part of that team when we won this year last year we to put it like show how well we compete against other schools we scored 176 points and the runner-up scored 75 so we almost doubled their points and not to brag but that's kind of a bragging moment um and our athletes scored first in 12 out of our 18 events and then the meet after that was our state meet and although technically not like a huge group of girls always qualify you can still feel the love from our entire team from three hours away like there are a few girls who even came all the way down to eiu and you just feel the support from everyone on the team there's so much love that goes around and i'm super proud to be a part of that um this was also another historical moment for us we scored 26 points which is super oppressive we've never scored that many points at a state meet before so again super proud to be a part of that and to contribute on the 4x1 um as well as that we scored three we have three new records up on our outdoor girls track and field board which doesn't happen quite often there's a records up there from quite a while ago so just to get three this year especially after all the circumstances of years prior we definitely worked our butts off to get that and i'm super proud to be a part of this team and speak on behalf and i'm really just looking forward to what we're going to accomplish this year that's all i forgot to mention that l was also on the allstate 4x1 team so not only a great speaker she was on the 4x2 as well we unfortunately weren't all state in that event but she did a great job thank you so much thank you all and congratulations thank you for representing us so well uh in so many different ways it's great to finally get you here in front of the board and recognize you and don't ever apologize for bragging you did a great job that's right we're so proud of you well done yeah well done not just not just the records which we're very proud of just the team spirit i mean god bless you we're proud of you all right little closer sorry we're just proud of you we'll leave this thank you thank you thank you thank you student board members questions in common all right student board members so i'm gonna go first some of the latest things that have happened at south since i last updated the board have to do with our sports teams both our boys and girls cross country teams are still placing extremely high at their meets our boys golf team won conference and both the girls and boys golf teams have moved on to regionals our football team is on a winning streak with a rough start to the season that's a plus and the regular season for all our fall sports is wrapping up in the next few weeks and then our teams will be off to their championship series with the hope of bringing some trophies back to south touching on the plays that i mentioned in the last update the cast and crew are still working hard preparing to put on spectacular performances and one more thing i would like to talk about is our homecoming that happened this past saturday homecoming this year was hosted outside and all people in attendance had a lot of fun the students loved the fireworks show to end the night it was especially nice to have the dance again after not being able to have one last year this was just another event that provided a little sense of normalcy back to the high school experience i also want to congratulate our nine students who are named national merit scholars and our two students who are commended in the upcoming future the winter sports season will be starting and we can't wait to see what the muslim teams accomplish this season thank you scarlett jade okay so here at north we've had a very busy couple weeks and i don't think it's going to be stopping anytime soon last week we had our theater present um blight spirit which was very fun uh the set it was up a couple days ago and it looked incredible and i know they're going to be working very hard for the next one that comes up on the other side of our fine arts department we also have a couple concerts in the upcoming we have our choir concert on october 6th here on fdgn and our orchestra concert which is very exciting because i'm part of it on october 14th at dgs which is going to be very exciting to be able to perform in the new auditorium that we have so very exciting moving on to other things that are going to be happening a lot of fundraisers are happening our student council is having a fundraiser tomorrow to be able at chipotle to be able to fund future events including our homecoming which is coming up very soon i know south just had theirs but ours is coming up on the week of october 18th which is very exciting like scarlet said to get a sense of normalcy back another fundraiser we also have is the no one fights the loan fundraiser starting in the next couple days we're selling t-shirts and stickers which is very fun to raise awareness for cancer and i think it's a really important topic to touch on and another one is also a fundraiser happening between our empowerment club and our um eating disorder initiative which they're also going to be fundraising for nita which is the national eating disorder association which i think is also very important to touch on and another thing that we're also doing for our health is the young hearts for life which is going on in this week on thursday we have early dismissal but that organization is still coming in to do this really important exam on us for all the kids that whose parents gave authorization it's still not too late to sign up so i think it's really important that if anybody still wants to sign up the registration date is october 6th for the last people and then moving on to something that also concerns how our students have been feeling the last couple days last week we unexpectedly lost one of our own here at dgn senior mason walters tragically passed away this last week it hasn't just been hard on many of his friends and teachers but on our whole community and i'm thankful to go to a school where we as students are so close and united and especially in these situations we came together to mourn and to celebrate mason's life and the legacy he leaves behind not just as a friend or a student or an athlete but as a person who taught us so much and he'll be remembered by the content of his character my deepest condolences go out to the walters family you're on our thoughts and we're with you thank you jade thank you any questions from board members for our student board members thank you paul we'll move on to the first reception of the visitors the meeting includes two opportunities for comments from the audience does anyone in the audience wish to comment i don't believe we've received any slips does it speak nancy no close to your microphone please oh i'm sorry yeah we have received no comments for uh reception of visitors for public comment so we'll move on to the board workshop for return to in-person learning all right so return in person learning a short report tonight just reminding everybody that up on our website is the list of all of the covid activity for students it's students that are close contacts and asymptomatic we report each week and we also report positive cases that we've had we've been pretty consistent of less than 10 positive cases each week and less than close contacts each week we did if you remember i think at some point i discussed with the board that we were not reporting staff numbers because they were so small on the dashboard but we've gone back and we're just going to start updating at the end of each month how many cases we had for each month if we hopefully our numbers stay very low for our staff we're a little over 96 percent vaccinated for all of our staff so although you know we know there are breakthrough cases and those kinds of things but we figure with the the low case numbers we want to be transparent for our community and let everybody know how many cases we're experiencing but we also want to keep staff's privacy as well so we think this is a nice balance of reporting that so you can see in august uh we had two weeks of school and we had two cases in september we had six so how many do we have quarantined right now students it's hard to say how many we have actually quarantined at any one time because they can overlap and where they start and end depending on whether they had symptoms or didn't you know it but you you know looking at that rolling average we probably have about 20 to 30 students out of school at any one time for covet relatedness okay and that's both schools that's both schools combined yeah if i broke if i broke it out by school it'd be getting small enough numbers that i'd be concerned about student privacy as well yep all right so we update that on the district website every monday morning so by midday monday that should be up updated for folks that are looking for it test to stay protocol we've been talking about this over the last couple of months right now we're not recommending moving forward with this at this time you can see our quarantine numbers are low and of course we want to keep as many kids and students in school as we can the challenge with the guidelines right now is that for you to qualify for tests to stay you would have to be following all of the protocols for when the contact happened and most of our contacts that are tracking back to school or happening at lunch when you remove your mask to eat or at athletics where you have close contact any student that is being quarantined and it tracks back to those settings isn't eligible for tests to stay so this is a pretty heavy lift to put this in place a very small number of our students would qualify for it and right now we have a few nurses out as well so this isn't a time where i can recommend that we go this direction however we do have several especially elementary schools in the area who can't have students out or exempt out of quarantine because of vaccination because they're not eligible to be vaccinated so i think this is an area where you're going to see a lot of elementary schools push quickly into especially and some of our elementary partners as well i meet with them on a weekly basis we're constantly talking about this so we're going to just monitor it we'll see if our numbers start to tick up a little bit then you know might change our opinion as an administration but right now we're just going to closely monitor and see how it goes and kind of keep tabs on how many students would have been impacted by a test to stay but as i said right now would be a very small number so um and our students do have a pathway to get out of to be exempt from quarantine in being vaccinated like i said our elementary partners do not have that option so right now it's just monitor and keep reassessing this is a reoccurring topic in our administrative team meetings questions on this all right that's it for the return to school update i'm going to turn this over to rob and jeff on a presentation on staff recruiting hiring we bring this to the board each fall good evening board uh yeah so as hank said jeff and i are here to give the annual update on uh staff recruiting and hiring uh particularly about actions that we took past this past spring and now that we see in our staff today so to start out i just want to bring us back to our mission statement uh in particular those first two underlying words and our mission statement is the caring and challenging environment for our students that's what we strive to create and to create that we need a staff that's caring and challenging so this gets into the criteria that our selection teams look for when they go to hire an individual for a position i'll start us over on the right hand side the challenging that's everything we think about a classroom teacher or a parapro or you know anybody that's really working in our buildings is we want our staff to be experts in their profession we want them to have high expectations of their students and of each other and we also want them to understand how the brain learns so they can structure learning for students that's appropriate for them the other side is the caring well the challenging part is there the caring is we need personality traits and we need background experiences uh to be able to care for our students so we need every single one of our staff members to be student centered we need them to be empathetic coaches and for our staff to be able to empathize with all of our students collectively on our staff we need a variety of shared lived experiences and we need a variety of shared social identities so we can empathize with all of our students so that's that's the large profile of what we're looking for each hiring season i just want to remind you some challenges that we see as we go out and try to recruit and find people for these positions should come as no surprise we report every year there's a national shortage of individuals who are going into the education field that's both classroom teachers and our support staff and our cmg staff and administrators just collectively there's a challenge there nationwide we also have a challenge within the state of illinois that there's pretty limited pipelines to allowing somebody to get their license or their certification to fill some of these roles there's been some some improvements over the past few years but the challenge still exists the third point down here really leads to that first point which is we also are battling a perception of the profession so there are some negative perceptions of what it means to work in education and that unfortunately is leading fewer and fewer people to choose education as their their field of work so we have that that we're working through and then the other is uh there's always a challenge particularly in the western suburbs here is that we're competing with other school districts for the best candidates so there's fewer people and so it creates this competition field between the school districts but the good news is we've got jeff and jeff's primary role in all of this is to go out and with all these challenges happening find people to apply for our jobs so he's going to talk to you about some new and unique ways that we've been recruiting some candidates there are increased like i said in illinois some increased pathways for an individual to get their license or their certification for particular jobs he'll touch briefly on one powerful thing we have going for us is the reputation of district 99 and that while there is a shortage uh people as they are coming in for interviews are telling us the only reason why i applied for this is because it's district 99 so we have a really good reputation out there and then also how jeff in his professional networks is trying to change that competition mindset between districts into one in which there's coordination to try collectively across districts to fill in some of these gaps and to find candidates for these positions so i'll hand it over to jeff now and he can talk through uh things that he's been working on all right thank you rob um so i'm gonna start off uh just as i said rob mentioned touching on what are some of the methods that we are using for recruiting staff here to district 99 uh some of these are tried and true methods couple things that are a little bit newer perhaps uh obviously this past year with the pandemic job fairs were not plentiful year before there were apparently none i managed to get to two they were virtual and that was with some reach out trying to find some so hoping that uh things will uh move up in that regard for this coming school year in fact i've already signed up for one with a local university here in the state as well the other thing we're trying to do not only with our certified positions but with all of our positions is a more social media promotion if you've been on facebook or twitter or perhaps linkedin you've probably seen postings for things it's still ongoing as i mentioned for some positions we still have open in our support staff but we were trying to do that in the spring as well for our certified staff positions and all of our positions uh one thing that's a little bit newer is trying to reach out connect with some more national tools and some more national job boards uh idea this is trying to be a little bit more proactive than passive instead of traditionally just posting our jobs on our website and hoping people come and find us is also trying to do a little bit more hey we're out here in this area because if you're not from the chicagoland area you might not have ever heard of downers grove and not think about coming to work for district 99 so trying to get our name out there to different regions of the country uh through these other job boards um and that leads into my next point there which is personal outreach so starting last spring when we're looking at this i've been reaching out to different universities in various regions of the country just trying to connect with their education departments uh make sure that our name is out there as a district and that people know that we're interested in having their students come to our district and you know get a chance to interview them and see what they can bring to filling all the various goals we have that rob mentioned in terms of finding ideal candidates here for our students the next one on there is the networking so uh nwpa which is the group of human resource professionals from uh the burbs out here that i work with just had a meeting with them friday we meet monthly and and that's really really an outstanding group for those of you that were here when pete was here you may have heard him mention them before and what a tremendous resource that is even though we are all high school districts that are as rob mentioned we're competing for some of the same people it really is a nice platform of support um trying to help each other find tools find resources i just uh connected with them today said hey we need a substitute for this position that we're having a little trouble finding an applicant for uh can you please you know share this with your networks as well so definitely a very collaborative approach on that front and then as rob mentioned our district reputation the work that we're currently doing has been tremendous as i was you know we have uh our online digital interviews that are the first screeners for our candidates and i go through and some of those i watch more intently some of them i just kind of pick and choose every once in a while depending on the position and just kind of spot check see what we have coming in and it's uh really interesting to me how frequently even doing that on a random basis we have people talking about the reputation and not just saying oh dennis grove is a great place but specifically mentioning things like our master's facility plan um some of the work we're doing with blended learning they've heard about all these different things that are district initiatives that people are uh you know able to speak to and you know are excited to be a part of with what we have going on here at the district so some things by the numbers for you this is related to our certified staff positions from this past spring so our teachers counselors those types of things we posted 25 certified positions and we did manage to fill all those positions prior to the start of school we had 954 applicants in our pool 135 of those self identify themselves as diverse so as we're thinking about the uh district goal here to try and as rob mentioned have staff that reflect the varied natures of our students um one of the things we look for is you know does our staff look like our students overall and trying to make that a closer relationship so we did have 25 candidates of color that were brought in for in-person interviews uh eight of those ultimately we did target for higher uh we ended up adding four to our staff the other four at some point either as we were making them the offer or shortly before accepted offer offers from other districts so as rob mentioned uh there is a com competition for districts to do that a lot large majority of uh staffs are not as diverse as maybe our student populations are so we're trying to address that across the board and that's all over the suburbs so some considerations going forward what are we doing uh to continue on uh what do we need to think about so uh district 99 is uh full-time hiring not been affected by the teacher shortage yet i stress that because as we were able to fill all 25 of our certified positions for the spring or from the spring into the fall here we do have some issues still staffing some of our leaves that we have coming up for fmla we've had a couple long term leaves they have all been very challenging to fill and the pool of teachers applying for various positions is not as deep as it once was in some cases we're talking about maybe a dozen to 20 applicants in some cases for very selective positions such as our social workers psychologists those pools can be even thinner and so those are difficult positions to fill so we are still kind of watching that and trying to do various things to continue to attract talent to the district um as i mentioned support staff those shortages are already here we have several support staff positions currently that are uh unfilled and we're trying to look at ways to promote that and continue to bring people in and that's not unique to district 99 as i mentioned networking with the nwpa everyone is experiencing the same shortage right now in terms of those staffing positions definitely looking to continue job fairs as i mentioned two from last spring i think typically uh the district we would attend around eight or nine at least so looking to return to that number here and currently working on the networking to get that going and um in terms of examining national job boards we're gonna continue to look at that we did have some applicants come from those when we tried so we're going to continue to dip our toes in that pool and see if it can do things as mentioned some other tools that allow us to proactively recruit talent from across the country where we can look at a list of candidates and then send them and connect with them instead of again waiting for them to come to us and then one other thing that's a newer thing that is a position we're bringing in the district i believe we're down to a couple finalists the education pathways coordinator you may have heard that mentioned before a very interesting position here we're bringing on where we'll have staff member who's going to work with our own students to kind of shepherd them through their high school years into college and those are students who are specifically interested in going into the education field so we create our own homegrown pipeline so that we have students who are interested in a career in education they're not going to be ended up going somewhere else we can try to bring them back back home to district 99 then hopefully any questions on so uh yeah real quick um so just to summarize uh you know we know specifically what we're looking for each hiring season uh and while there is a there's a there's a national shortage on workers in any field uh and we've we've historically had that in education also um so while there's challenges that are there one thing that excites me is i think about what is the pandemic uh what are some positives and it's caused us to really think differently about instead of passively just posting a position how do we actively go out and find people uh that fit the profile of what we're looking for so jeff just been doing a really good job there's frequent times he'll come into my office and say hey what about and we process that and think about is this a way that we could be creative solving this issue okay any questions for us i had a question about the educational pathways coordinator and maybe you said this but i i was having trouble hearing um we're bringing we're trying to encourage our students who are interested in education to return are we providing any kind of incentive for them i'm sorry are we providing any kind of incentive for them like tuition or sign-up bonus or something or other yeah we have we haven't gone come up we haven't gone that far yet right now we're just trying to start the position up um it is a new position and uh start kind of letting that grow but that's certainly something that possibly could be considered in the future i suppose okay yeah we don't offer uh specific incentives and you know we have the the intro to teaching class so there's a course there and then this position jeff was talking about is structuring it in a way of helping students choose courses that could lead them into a career in education okay thank you and i will take this opportunity to share with the board that tomorrow one of our students gracie over at south will be featured on the aaasa that's the superintendent's association for the united states our education pathways program our intro to teaching program and gracie one of our students will be featured in kind of how to do this how to grow your own so we'll be sharing that on the national level tomorrow and i hope to have a reporting of that to share with the board afterwards any other comments or questions all right any other questions all right thank you we have one action item for tonight we need a motion for the board of education to adopt the resolution authorizing july 1st 2021 to june 30th 2026 performance-based superintendence contract with dr henry thiele and to adopt the 2021-2026 performance-based superintendent's contract with dr thiele so moved second i think mike and terry might be a report [Music] no nancy kupka aye the motion carries and i am honored that we'll have dr thiele for another five years thank you board finally we have a second perception of visitors which is intended for audience members to address the board on any topic pertaining to community high school district 99 we've received no additional slips okay seeing none we need a motion for adjournment i move that we adjourn second all those in favor aye aye all those opposed we are insured thank you very much

difficulty hearing me okay that sounds great and we will um we can hear you just fine so if we can hear you they should be able to hear you online as well all right thank you so i'm going to start with a little warm-up question which is kind of nice tell us a little bit about yourself and how your experience will benefit carmel clay schools thank you so i'm jennifer nelson williams i've lived here in carmel for the last 18 years grew up in indianapolis and in addition to being a business owner i own a funeral home here in carmel i have two children that went through carmel schools and during that time while they were here i worked in the classroom i tutored english after they were finished i was part of united way's read up indiana program and in addition to those years of helping here in the classroom i'm now doing it again with josh's son who is nine today so we're back to third grade reading and math so i've spent years working in the classroom outside the classroom helping my kids and in addition to my business successes i'm familiar with budgets management and profit and loss so i feel like i'm uniquely qualified to be part of the board thank you my question is what motivates you to want to become a board member can you tell us your why sure so the first is i'm just passionate about the kids and the schools i feel that the schools are really the crown jewel of this community and it's why so many of us i know growing up carmel was just a very small community we i went to north central high school i grew up in indianapolis but as my kids were born and i started looking at where i wanted them to be educated i looked to carmel because there was so many wonderful things going on here and for the community to survive and to thrive we really need to put our kids first and it's so important to me to be a part of that process it's really raining out there it's so important because they're our future they need our help we need to put our brightest talents here on the school board and again i just i'm so impassioned by it and not only that so you know there are many people as we saw there are many people who are applicants this is a unique time for me that i'm able to do it so my daughter lindsay just graduated from college in july and so you know there's many people who are passionate about being here and being part of the process but i'm have a flexibility now that many parents don't enjoy and so i felt like it was my time to give back thank you can you maybe tell us uh about a time when you had to work with a team or team members to make a tough decision and maybe speak to your process for making the difficult decision yeah well i'm i started a not-for-profit in 2016 something that i had never done before um it was at a difficult time for women in this community and a friend and i co-founded an organization that brought together many different types of women it's a women's organization women for change and very quickly we grew to almost 15 000 members and bringing all those differences of opinions and different backgrounds rose unique challenges one of the guiding principles of our organization is civility and decorum and so we had to learn how to still be impassioned but listen to others opinions listen to others viewpoints respect one another's backgrounds and then come to guiding a guiding platform and you know develop it we would say you know build the plane as we were flying it and so i think that that is very similar to the situation that we find ourselves here today with carmel and where we are there's there's fear there's differences of opinion but i think the thing that brings us all together one is the love and respect for the city the love and respect for our children and the the desire to create something wonderful for our kids and so you know i really believe that we can while being respectful with one another come to some consensus well thank you jennifer again for for being here the next question we have for you is what attributes do you believe are essential to be a successful school board member i certainly can't speak to them all because i've never done this before i certainly will try my best but what i believe they're similar to the things i bring to my work and to women for change and to the other organizations that i am a part of it's certainly my desire to do the work i'm not a shirker i dig in i will do the research also my my love of people and i i think the success in my career is because i can connect with one with people and um it's something that is you know part of the 8 000 people or so that i've met with over the 30 years of my career i also am from a long line of people who feel it's important to serve our communities my brother is a city councilor here in carmel my boyfriend works for the city i mean those passions that we bring to these jobs i think will make me good at this position [Music] um and just my love of the kids i mean i love kids as we were driving here josh said you know just because you're going on to school board doesn't mean that you know you get to hang out with the kids um but i think that i i have a desire to and i think the thing that brings me here are the right reasons that i just want to make carmel and carmel clay schools the best that they can be thank you so our next question is can you give us one to two examples when you've had to work with others who may have had different priorities different backgrounds different values or even opinions than yours and share what strategies you use to get to an outcome sure i mean i think i have those without going into a specific situation i mean i think those things arise at work um where maybe i'm trying to help a family come to i see families all the time and as families grow and and they get larger and people marry you have many differences of opinions on what type of arrangement is best for their family and so i try and listen hear the differences of opinion and try and help families come and reach some consensus similarly with our work for women for change as i said as we try and work towards policies that can benefit women in the community hoosier women we bring to the table all sorts of people from different backgrounds different opinions different viewpoints and we try and work together for the better good and i think listening and respect for another's viewpoint trying to you know as they say walk through walk through in someone else's shoes trying to see where they came from what brought them to this time and this place um empathy um is really the best way of helping navigate those differences of opinion thank you can you tell us about what you know and like about ccs and what you could improve you know i've just been very impressed with our years at carmel my kids started at collegewood when we first moved to carmel and then they were redistricted to west clay and then on to carmel high school i was impressed by the teachers and the support staff i was i found their curriculum to be interesting and fulfilling for my children both of my kids were in the challenge program which they made so many wonderful friends and you know i really felt like it taught to their ability you know the redistricting process was very difficult it was scary and i we were separated from some children and as anybody who is a parent knows those in those younger ages probably even this just happened to us when my kids were little but you feel like they'll never make another friend so it was it was difficult and scary i i think that probably could always be more transparent i don't know the future of the needs for redistricting but certainly i know that's always a challenge for families but overall i have been immensely pleased with and with my experiences and now watching holden and he struggles with reading and has some issues but his teachers have been overwhelmingly supportive in helping him get the the care and the support he needs so that he can become a confident young man so i'm highly impressed with carmel thank you if chosen for the board how will you keep confidentiality of information a priority well i mean i'm very used to that in my work i mean we have sensitive information that we are given about an individual about their cause of death about their social security information and so i'm very used to keeping information close to me it is a top priority so that one can feel that secure that the integrity of the board is maintained so i don't have any problem with that kind of moving off of that topic but on a similar one school board service requires time how much time and energy can you dedicate to this position as i mentioned before you know both of my kids are out of the house um i was very busy as they were growing up for many of those years i was head of a single-parent household so i had a two teenagers at one time driving them around taking care of them while working full-time now that lindsay's graduated and ari is a third year med student here in town i have the time and the energy to devote to this and it is my top priority i've been in my career for 30 years so i certainly have the support staff i need i'm blessed that i have a wonderful team underneath me and this is my priority at this time and our last question for the evening are you part of any organization that may cause a conflict of interest and if so which organization might that be no i'm not okay does anybody else on the board have any questions they'd like to follow up on or touch on jennifer thank you very much for joining us this evening i just wanted to say i think you all are doing such an admirable job i'm honored to be here and thank you very much thank you okay welcome john thank you happy to be pardon here oh we're going to ask we're going to i guess alternate who's asking the questions we have a series of questions and like i said before that we're going to be asking everybody the same questions okay great and so for your very first question which is a nice easy warm-up question tell us a little bit about yourself and how your experience will benefit karma clay schools sure well first of all thank you for having me i'm really grateful to have the opportunity to be here i grew up on the east coast in new york city married a hoosier so i'm a hoosier by marriage and we've raised our son who's a middle schooler here in carmel and i've spent my entire professional career in a variety of youth serving organizations both in the formal education arena and also what i would term as the informal education arena as well and you know feel as a parent and as an educator and as a member of the community i've got a lot to offer to the school district and i'm excited to pursue the opportunity thank you so what motivates you to want to become a board member can you tell us your why sure i think simply my why is to pay it forward i've been very fortunate throughout my life to have people who have laid the groundwork in the foundation for what for me has been some really formative experiences and feel that i'm in a position professionally and experientially to be able to do that for others and um you know i've had a number of different volunteer experiences before so servant leadership is sort of part of who i am and this is just another way for me to again pay it forward to other students and families within carmel thank you tell us about a time when you had to work with a team or team members to make a tough decision speak to your process for making the difficult decision please sure that's a great question i think i'm faced uh i've been faced with tough decisions uh on a number of different arenas both professionally and personally in the work environment as an example i work as part of a small team and um you know at the end of the day my supervisor expects me to be responsible for that decision however i'm a firm believer in a collaborative effort and ensuring that uh everyone's voice is able to be heard and that voice is valued so uh often uh so i mean as a more specific example budget planning we were just doing that for 2022 at work and um you know it's a interesting environment still in recovery from covet especially in the non-for-profit sector so some tough decisions have to be made as to where expenses can go and where they can't go and really part of that process was ensuring that everybody had the opportunity to have their voice heard opinion shared and at the end of the day we have to make the best decision for the group and i think you know it really mirrors an experience that would happen as a member of of any board but certainly the school board as well what's the best decision for the students and families in carmel well thank you john again for being here you kind of answered the question right there at the end but i'm going to just throw it out to you again what attributes do you believe are essential to be a successful school board member thanks mike so i think any board member really the board's role is fiduciary oversight and i think specifically when it comes to school board it's that's around budget it's also around evaluating and if it necessary hiring or making an employment decision on the superintendent you know i think our role as board members is to support the professional staff who have the background education and professional skills to be doing their job day-to-day certainly to review policy and i think specifically when you're representing a specific area within carmel it's to hear to listen to the folks with whom i'm supposed to be representing and bring that opinion forward where and when it's appropriate to do so thank you thank you for your patience i'm just jotting notes our next question is can you give us one to two examples of when you've had to work with others who may have had different priorities different backgrounds different values or opinions than yourself and share what strategies you've used to get to the the outcome sure i think this happens uh i mean certainly happens in in professional circles i've had the experience thus far in serving on a couple of different boards from different other organizations both here in indianapolis and in carmel and when i lived on the east coast and certainly you know variety of opinion and background uh will always play a role i believe what's really important is to think about primary purpose and mission of the organization that you're entrusted with representing and that has to be the focal point through which you look um you know i happen to be the parent of a child in the carmel schools however my role on the on a school board is not that of my opinion individually uh it is collective of again the folks that i would be uh responsible for representing and so it's sort of taking that 10 000 foot macro view and saying okay what are the mission what are the values what are the expectations and are we fulfilling them that way not necessarily what does john shapiro think is the right answer can you tell us about what you know and like about carmel high schools and then what you could improve sure certainly my perspective here is based on experience of uh through through the eyes of a current middle school student um i will tell you one of when my family and i decided to move back here as i mentioned my wife is a native hoosier and grew up on the north side of indianapolis and we were living on the east coast and we had some decisions to make as to where we were going to relocate 10 years ago when we decided to come to the greater indianapolis area we actually specifically chose carmel largely due to the school system and knowing that it was a high quality education and that the values were in line with the values that my wife and i hold to be very important and that we try and raise our son on and so we've been really pleased with the quality of education uh both in terms of the academic education but also in terms of character development meeting students where they are i think those things are all done really really well in school i think and a continued opportunity for growth in any school system is how do we continue to make sure we're meeting the needs of all students um you know carmel is becoming more and more diverse and that is not just socioeconomically but it's also politically it is values based and the public school system needs to be representative of the students that it's serving and so i think continuing on the path that we're on and ensuring that we're providing equitable opportunity that students can be socially and emotionally safe so that they can be academically successful as needs to continue to be a priority thank you if chosen for the board how will you keep confidentiality of information a priority i mean quite simply what happens at a board meeting is not you know unless it's executive session that obviously is that's a a private matter or you know whatever is disclosed in board minutes or is disclosed publicly at a meeting obviously anybody has access to that information but beyond that um you know what happens in a boardroom stays in a boardroom and certainly as i mentioned before some of that may be personnel matters and things that are highly confidential and that really isn't anybody else's business and it's it's almost as if that segment of that experience needs to be sort of put away until it's an opportune time to take it back out so the next question we have is school board service requires time how much time and energy can you dedicate to this position willing to dedicate the time and energy that's needed to fulfill the responsibilities of the role i've had the opportunity to talk with my employer about the fact that i'm pursuing this they're completely supportive um and so you know i i know generally speaking what the meeting schedule is and those are things that i you know stand firmly behind being committed to as well as doing anything i need to engage with the constituents in the community because again a priority for me is making sure that they feel as if they have a voice to somebody on the school board and last but not least we're very interested in knowing are you part of any organization that would have a conflict of interest being on this board i do not believe so okay that's fantastic well do you have any questions for us and do you does the board have any other additional questions that you'd like to ask at this time do you have anything else you'd like to share you're allowed to say no we don't want to put you on the spot but i i appreciate the opportunity i i uh no i'm uh like i said i'm i'm grateful for the opportunity to be considered i do think i have a lot to offer i think my resume again my experience both in the formal education circles as well as uh just youth serving organizations in general and i think that could be a real benefit to the board well thank you i appreciate your consideration well we are very excited to have you here and thank you very much for joining us this evening thank you it's my pleasure you hello good evening and thank you for joining us thank you for having me we have a series of questions and we are asking you the same questions that we've asked the other candidates and we're going to rotate on who's asking which question and i'm going to start and it's an easy warm question so you can just feel very comfortable but our first question is tell us a little about yourself and how your experience will benefit chronically schools okay so i'm nikki mcnally and i have four kids in the school district my husband and i have lived in carmel since 2003 so we're long time residents my oldest son graduated in 2019 and then i have two uh senior sophomore in the high school and our youngest is in sixth grade um having four kids with different interests and different activities i have pretty much been around every activity you can think of in carmel clay schools whether it's track cross country swim meets musicals chtv even spellville i've pretty much seen everything so i have a lot of experience volunteering in the classroom volunteering in the library bookstores pretty much everywhere i also kind of stepped up my volunteer game a couple of years ago in 2019 when i co-chaired the parent political action committee for the school safety referendum so that involved basically all the campaigning for the referendum so we met at people's homes we went to events we spoke pretty much all over the city to gather bipartisan support for the referendum so that allowed me to see the administrative side of the district school funding the comprehensive safety plans the things that you didn't see just being in the classroom on a day-to-day basis i would also say that i learned the ins and outs of the iep process my oldest son left with a very extensive iep and after years of advocating for his education i really learned how things work in very great detail in the classroom so i've been around the block thank you can you tell us what motivates you to want to become a board member tell us your why so i wrote about this in my application so this will not be new to you but since this is kind of for the public record i'll i'll talk about it here there is a quote that's thrown around in volunteer circles that i work in and that quote is that there's no such thing as other people's children and so i might do everything right for my four kids at home they might have you know all the educational academic support they need the safety that they have they might feel valued respected but our community on the whole is not successful unless all of the students have all of those opportunities and so i feel like the board is a very impactful way to help other people's children i really do believe that i've volunteered for nearly a decade to try to make not only schools safer but our communities safer i helped to start the moms demand action for gun sense in indiana chapter where we advocate for better common sense gun laws and so that worked on a community level to try to make kids safer obviously i was very committed to school safety and it's really about taking care of all of all of the children of the district and i think that is what creates a successful community on the whole tell us about a time when you had to work with a team or team members to make a tough decision would love for you to speak to your process for making the difficult decisions so i've got a long history of working on non-partisan groups where people are on all sides of the political spectrum believe it or not an issue like gun control has really broad support on both sides of the political aisle and so in that organization where i worked for many years we had a lot of situations where people were coming from very different viewpoints and i have found that in working with teams like that you start with common ground what do we agree on and you kind of go from there and really over the years of working with bipartisan or non-partisan teams and these volunteer jobs i've found that you end up with deeper understanding of the issues and really more creative problem solving because you're attacking it from different sides you're seeing different viewpoints than just your own little bubble and i think it ends up being very valuable so really being starting with common ground meeting people where they are and then trying to push forward from there well thank you nikki again for being here what attributes do you think are essential to be a successful board member for being a board member um i think one of the things that you guys are hearing about a lot right now is transparency and being able to listen to the community i think that's one of the main jobs of a board member is to be able to listen take that whether it's criticism of of the board or the district but really have an open mind hearing all of those different viewpoints and being able to really listen to the community i think a dedication to the kids is obviously paramount to this position really just being fair and moderate in viewpoint and being able to take what the community is giving and hopefully use that to guide the policy for the school next we'd like to know can you give us one to two examples where you've had to work with others who may have different priorities backgrounds values even opinions other than yourself and what strategy did you share to get to an outcome and you sort of touched on this but you might have other examples yeah there's um so you know i i do have a day job which i didn't mention before i um i work in insurance and finance and that part of my day is always very boring but in these volun in the volunteer world when you're working with volunteers you don't have the control that you have in the workplace with employees or with you know a very regimented job and so there are so many examples over the years whether it's volunteering we had a big volunteer team with just within carmel with the referendum the political action committee that we didn't always agree on on the approach forward but i think really where i learned to um moderate the teams and the groups and and push people forward is with that very divisive controversial work on gun safety legislation what i always found with any gun rights supporter you know whatever they thought i was saying initially we always could find common ground in every conversation you just remain calm you find that common ground and you meet people where they are and we're all human beings we all tend to want the same things which is a better community a better tomorrow for our kids and if you can stay calm and find your common ground i think pretty much everyone could find a way forward can you tell us what you know and like about carmichael schools and then what you could improve well obviously i like it because we've been here for a really long time but over the years i've seen a lot of things change i am interested if i'm able to move forward in this position to find out a little bit more about curriculum i had a son in the challenge program as early as 2009 2010 and i had one that just finished in fifth grade last year so a couple of years ago i was one of those parents questioning the board on what is happening so it's gone through a lot of changes i'm interested to learn more just about curriculum in general i have learned more about what happened with that but just the curriculum in general i think i'd like to find out more about and see where that comes from and what we might be able to do to improve things and then i i think that's probably the biggest thing for me i want to make sure that all the hard work we did on the school safety referendum is followed through i know we have a couple more sros to be hired i want to make sure that those safety plans stay strong stay current and they were always being as safe and locked down as we can possibly be my my commitment to school safety is huge i mean i i can't even tell you the countless hours i have dedicated in my life volunteer hours to try to improve safety at schools in the community on the whole and so that's just something i think we are doing really well but being able to take a deeper dive and really understand that we're doing everything that we can is a big priority for me oh one more thing i would say because i know you're hearing a lot about this too but uh i i do feel like as an outsider whether i agree with the board's current decisions or not i feel like the communication from the school on the whole to parents has some improvement so it can be improved i think a lot of things the schools do great and letting people know and i'm sure there's a lot of things you can't let parents know and i think that parents right now are struggling with not hearing maybe enough okay if chosen for the board how will you keep confidentiality of information a priority i'm sorry how would i keep confidentiality a priority yes ma'am so i'm married to a lawyer he has been a lawyer for a long time and he has trained me to not talk about things not put things in email and i hear about this all the time um confidentiality has kind of been ingrained in our household in general that when somebody tells you something incompetence it is not to go anywhere so obviously that would apply to anything here i my day job i deal with people's confidential information on a daily basis it's something i'm very used to doing well obviously school board requires uh time so how much time and energy can you dedicate to this position yeah so that's probably one of the things that maybe a decade ago kept me from here this is something that i've always had in the back of my mind thinking about doing but i had four little kids so now those little kids aren't so little anymore um my job i work for myself i started my business about 17 years ago and it's given me a lot of flexibility to both be in my kids lives in the school and the day-to-day the day-to-day things that a lot of parents aren't able to do but it would also provide me flexibility with this as well and last but not least are you part of any organization that you're aware of that may cause a conflict of interest with you serving on the board no i'm really not part of any official organizations anymore i've got i've done a lot of volunteer work i've been helping the parents the parent group that's supporting the diversity equity and inclusion initiatives and in chrome clay schools but obviously as a board member i wouldn't be able to do those kinds of things directly like that so i have no problem with stepping back from those things in order to remain neutral and nonpartisan and that's no problem at all thank you did the board do anybody else have any other questions and do you have any questions or anything you'd like to share with us i think that that you guys pretty much covered it okay thank you very much well thank you very much nikki appreciate it loving cat please join us at the podium somebody forgot their laptop okay i'm ready well that sounds great so venkat we have a series of questions and the same questions that we've asked each of the candidates and we're all going to alternate on who's going to be asking the questions i'm going to get started and it's pretty easy warm question to be asking it is tell us a little about yourself and how your experience will benefit carmel clay schools sure um i introduce myself first uh my name is venkata tarakonda i've been a resident of carmel since 2004.

i had all of my education in india i'm blessed to have my education with four different religious schools it started with a christian and then hindu and then also a muslim so i have a combination of different cultures diverse education skills and i'm pretty good at interacting with all these different cultures in and out of states too so i've been actively involved in nationality council which has about 60 countries representatives so no one is less no one is more so we are all at the same place and then doing same purpose sharing the ideas and then getting getting along with each other so in addition to that i was also part of my own local indian community carmel education foundation and i think i'm blessed to have a expedition program which has opened many doors for me to stay and stick with karmal education thank you can you tell us what motivates you to want to become a board member tell us your why absolutely um there are a lot of things that you can do as a board member the first thing is because i've been in the board for many organizations not just the karma schools it gives a different perspective when you're from a different portfolio like a different mindset right [Music] i've been with the multicultural and multilingual organizations and carmel education foundation also has given a different opinion about what we do for the community rather than what we get from the from the schools and community so everybody asks the same question what the school is giving me but what is that you giving to the school is more important so i felt like i mean it's been a while and then i had a successful grad from karma schools and i felt like it's the time to give back and i think there's a time that i decided to be a volunteer for the schools thank you tell us about a time when you had to work with a team or team members to make a tough decision and maybe speak to your process for making the difficult decision please thank you i'm an iit professional i still work as an id professional and we don't deal with only the local communities so i work with the teams that are global so they are working 24 by 7.

so for me getting a win to win situation is more important than just meaning my point of view across the audience so it is necessary and mandatory that all your messages are sent across at the same level right i mean you there are different languages and different peoples of different skill set and it is necessary to convey your message to the lowest level and then up well thank you venkata again for being here what attributes do you believe are essential to be a successful successful board member i think we need to work together it doesn't matter if they have three groups or four groups i personally feel that carmel community this is a privileged community right so we have parents who don't have send their kids to the school and the parents who send the kids to the school right and they there are different groups and they have different opinions because once the kid is out of school and then the empty nest they think in a different way when the kids are when their new couple moves into the carmel community their perspective is different and the kids who are sending the kids to the school i mean the parents are sending the kids to school they have they see the schools in a different perspective so it is necessary that we streamline and then convey the message like what we are meant for and what we are doing it here if not then i think they are process information in a different perspective and that is you know i was there in couple of meetings and then they all ask about their personal the family and then the person kids how they are performing at school rather than the whole class has about 40 students and they were all given the same level of education or maybe even more some get more and some got less based on their skill set but the the families are asking why my kid is not writing and i curse you writing my why my kid is not doing stuff like that so you know i i did all my math in using log tables nobody uses them now so calculators have taken a lot of you know time out of the individuals so i mean you need to change with that time you know you cannot live in the past and then i demand what i have what you have done you cannot be asking that now thank you so our next question is can you give us one to two examples of when you've had to work with others who have different priorities different backgrounds values or opinions than yourself and how what was your strategy on coming you know getting to an outcome correct being an idea id professional we usually make a model before we jump into building the process i think katie might be knowing much better about the idea stuff so before we do anything we do we build a prototype and seek opinions and perspective from each and every team and also every member it includes the lowest level like you know beginners all the way to the seniors so the perspectives of each of those individuals are different so every time we need to get a two pages of eyes going through the process just instead of just going through you know whatever comes in your mind is not the truth i believe in that can you tell us a little bit about what you know and like about carmel high schools and what you could improve oh that's a difficult question um i i guess we uh everybody says i mean when something is happening we all fire up and uh get into the social media saying that all kinds of stuff so without knowing the facts and numbers it is not a good practice to jump into the conclusions and then define what's happening and you know there is there used to be a story somebody sees the tale somebody sees something else and then they make up the story and then you don't know what is happening around there so i think we have a powerful tool which is a social media and i think it is necessary to make a better use of it on both sides not only just from the karma schools and also from the you know the community too so if chosen for the board how will you keep confidentiality of information a priority uh can you come again if chosen for the board how will you make confidentiality a priority uh that is a very important question um i deal with a lot of clients that includes the state private and public sector and also the federal clients so security is a prime thing for us you cannot share the passwords you cannot share the personal information you cannot share even with your own family members because we are dealing with pii personal information so it is very necessary that you cannot share anything outside the box whatever happens inside the laptop stays in the laptop thank you school board service requires time how much time and energy can you dedicate to this position so um this was the same question asked in a different perspective i have four kids so my oldest one was like he she is in that 21 years old and my youngest one is a 13 years old so we have split our work including between me and my wife and also my daughter also travels from home to the school it all depends on work life balance you know i work most of the time work from home because i'm an architect i don't build everything every system end-to-end i just build the prototype and then give a demo to the system and then move on so i don't build the entire system end-to-end because i don't have time to am i i'm a very expensive professional to be frank i'm telling the truth i don't want to hide that one and last but not least are you part of any organization that may pose as a conflict of interest with you being on the board i don't know what kind of uh agencies are involved with the carmel clay schools as of now so i don't have any conflict of interest because i work my own terms and then times too great thank you board are there any additional questions that you have and do you have any questions or any anything else you'd like to share with us i think i was uh talking to mr b um outside so i think he gave me a brief like what is the process uh until tomorrow i wish you a good luck for all of you guys choosing the right candidate thank you very much good luck to every candidate though i'm not taking your laptop you're still here thank you we have no additional business for this evening may i get a motion to uh during the meeting so moved thank you mr kershner second thank you louise discussion all those in favor signify by saying aye aye motion carries meeting adjourned 4-0 thank you

services and or the washington county health department we intend to conduct this meeting similarly to an in-person meeting but please be patient as there are occasionally technical issues that dial 877-853-5247 and then enter the meeting id which is 977-6634-1226 this information is also available on the published agenda it's on the broadcast of this meeting on ctn channel 16 at t channel 99 and it's online at a2gov.org watch ctn where you would select the government channel mr leonard can we please have a roll call of course commissioner mills here in ann arbor commissioner gibb randall here in ann arbor commissioner sovay commissioner abrams here from ann arbor commissioner hammerschmidt here in ann arbor commissioner dish here in ann arbor commissioner lee commissioner clark uh faintly but i did did you say from ann arbor and commissioner white here in ann arbor we have a quorum of um with seven members uh it will does just a reminder to petitioners and the planning commission it takes six affirmative votes to affirmatively advance petition very good thank you um item three is approval of the agenda may i have a motion to approve the agenda moved by commissioner weich seconded by commissioner abrams and i see mr leonard's hand because we don't have minutes right that's correct i would ask that you remove that my apologies that'll be forwarded on the next agenda okay so that would be striking agenda item four any other changes or discussion of the agenda um all those in favor of the motion with that amendment please raise a hand or say yes that is all the hands so um it it carries item five now is the reports from city administration city council the planning manager planning commission officers and committees and any written communications um council member dish do you have a report for us tonight i don't think that there was anything that happened last night that would interest you although you might be pleased to hear that we had a first reading on energy benchmarking um which though not our primary responsibility here on planning is clearly something that we care about i'm happy to be corrected by mr leonard mr leonard you're up you can either fill in the blanks or add anything of your own i would never correct only augment um a couple of quick notes uh you might notice like in an absence of our agenda previously the planning commission had postponed 336 south ashley a site plan this was a designated consumption facility that was proposing in addition they have withdrawn that petition and therefore it has vanished from this evening's agenda correspondingly i would um i shared with the commission and it has also been attached in additional communications for public review i have shared a report as i promised of recent variants applications uh regard specifically regarding electric vehicle parking if you have any additional questions on that please don't hesitate to follow up with me but i try to put together what i thought would be the helpful details for your information thank you commissioner mills for helping me to make sure i was doing so and then finally uh in our working session next week is anticipated for a pre-pud petition meeting for 1855 to 1875 north maple this is a proposed residential development being conceptualized for the southwest corner of maple north maple and m14 so again that'll be a pre-petition session for that and that's what i have very good are there any other commissioner officers or committee liaisons that have anything to report i wanted to note that the orc did meet last week um we discussed tc1 rezoning and kind of the communication plan um for uh the um those folks that are kind of within the footprint and then within a thousand feet and just so you know i unless the plan has changed um during our work session in november the plan is to have that as a public meeting um and invite folks who have questions that way we can all hear it um kind of what the questions and comments are associated with it won't be the public hearing we'll still have a formal public hearing at a meeting where we um where we um vote but this will be an opportunity for those folks kind of in that area or any others so if you're interested it might it is the it's the meeting in november the november work session okay so the second tuesday in november um we discussed kind of the plan for that and the communications associated with that um and also potential changes that could happen in parallel the kind of height um discussion um and the distance for uh in associated with um the tc one district when we were talking about the the highest you know um that's currently a thousand foot setback so there was some discussion of that and i'm expecting that that will kind of continue on and then we also discussed some mr leonard brought some good maps and data associated with non-conformities in r2a districts um and so hopefully we'll see some of some relatively simple text changes um to that going forward is that a fair assault okay um anybody else okey dokey on tonight number six which is audience participation this is the next on our agenda is an opportunity for public comment it's an opportunity for persons to speak for up to three minutes about an issue that's not listed as a public hearing on this agenda so tonight we have dedicated public hearings on site plan review thresholds and um for the 38 3874 research park drive proposal if you wish to address the planning commission on any other matters now is an appropriate time for that to speak um please press star 9 if you're listening if you're listening by phone or if you've joined us through the web link you can use the raised hand feature that's at the bottom of the screen if you're watching us right now and would like to dial in the phone number is 877 8535 and our meeting id is 977-6634-1226 mr leonard will call on those who've raised their hand and again if you've dialed in you press star 9 if you're here watching us through zoom use the raise hand feature um he'll call on you by the last three digits of your telephone number or your name whatever depending on how you joined and when um once you've unmuted please move to a quiet area and mute any television or background sounds so that we can hear you more clearly please also state your name and address at
