As you can see that most all of these people in the parliament are men and there are no women. 185 women die per 100,000 live births due to pregnancy related causes in Myammar showing a decrease in healthcare for women and 34 of every thousand girls aged 15 and 19 give birth in Myammar in 20 this is from 2023. This heavily relates with the other slide as many of these women that die during childirth are aged 15 to 19. Adult literacy levels in BMR are nearly the same among among men and women. As this may be true, when you hit low income, there's there's a huge gap with only 73 72.3% of women being able to read compared to the 84.2% of men. So even with all of this, women still fight against this brutal military regime. woman o woman women worked to overthrow military dictatorship, restore democracy and dismantle the deeply entrenched patriarchal society.
Is that a $12,000 investment? I don't know. But I I would like to know if if we're using that one employee from I'm assuming it's one employee. I don't know. But if we're using, you know, the the person who does the registration for Ammerst, is that their only job? And if it is, then it you know, what percentage will we need to pay? I kind of would imagine that they have that job and other duties. And if they're not supporting Pelum with those other duties, then how much of their job is registration? And then could we parse out what we would need to pay to support that job? >> Um, I feel like we're really getting down into weeds here at this point in time and I'm not sure that that's information we're going to be able to get in a timely way. I guess I would just like to go back to what Rachel suggested, which is that we put the money, that 6,000 in the budget, and let the people who are going to be involved figure out the best way to use that to promote Pelum.
I've listened to um the police and fire and DPW the other night, and I've listened to the school. And um in in all honesty, um the you know, I think that we are at a crossroads, and um I um I based on what I've heard so far, I'll probably vote for it. I'm not going to I'm not going to swear to it, but I'll try. Um but um I think that my bigger concern is looking down the road, and I know it was it's been mentioned a couple of times, is that with the projects that are coming on, we are going to be in really big trouble. And I think we just have to have a really good plan for that. So um that's just my comment that I think we really need to start planning way ahead for this. So thank you very much, all.
So I want to talk about the comparison between MDC's and LDC's. This this being an MDC and this being an LDC. So there's one comparison when we look at both these nations. There's a there's a gender inequality pay gap and it's still a problem today. Most recently from the Census Bureau, women working full-time year round now earn 81 cents for every dollar men earn. This is down from 83 cents a year ago and 84 cents the year prior. So, we actually have an International Equal Payday on September 18th. This represents the long-standing efforts towards the achievement of equal pay for work of equal value. Just having an international equal pay day shows that there's a problem with equal pay across the whole entire world. Across all regions, women are paid less than men with the gender gap with the gender pay gap estimated around 20% globally.
And next, when it's time for the budget next year, we will have information so that we can say, "Nope, we're going to take that out. we don't we don't want to do that or yes that is something that worked. I guess that's how I feel about it. >> I'm just also think I'm thinking about what Shannon was just saying that that doesn't that doesn't um solve the problem of the the registar issue that the like >> um I do not mean this in any minimizing way but the like logistical data entry portion of the registar piece. Um, I would be curious, I don't think we need to know this now, but for longer term, how many students are registering over the summer, like outside of the time where we have an administrator in office? And could it be I is there a workaround there? Is perhaps something, Mickey, if if you're able when you're coming back for you to think about in terms of getting a budget for us to be able to vote on in another week.
Great. Thank you, Joan. Come on up. Anybody else? Can you you're Yep, you're okay. Can you go ahead and introduce yourself? Yeah, Deborah Weekly. I have a question about your sports field, the funding. The town was taking care of it before, so now you want to put it on the school side. So I don't really see the difference between who funds it, you know, except whose budget it comes out of. And if we know that it's been a problem, and I guess what has been the problem? I mean, I know we're trying to get more revenue out of it. Is it just that you're asking for the people who are operating the budget, that's where the money is coming from, is to who who's operating it, as opposed to somebody in the town managing the budget for it to the school funding it. And then I have some more questions.
How do advancements in women's rights help women in LDC's? So, I want to talk about three pillars and the first pillar being access to education. When women are given access to education, they can break the cycle of poverty and rely on their own checks. Next, access to healthcare. When women are given the access to healthcare, they can ensure physical autonomy and their safety. And lastly, access to basic rights. This provides women with the legal framework for equality. Okay. What is a sustainable development goal? Sustainable development goals are a set of 17 integrated objectives adopted by the UN member states in 2015. I want to focus on number five, gender equality. The UN aims to achieve gender equality and empower females across the globe by 2023. This is obviously not true as it's 2026 and I just mentioned all of these things that are wrong across the world.
Um, and since I asked for us to like pull this out of order, um, I would like to suggest that we ask the town to increase their contribution to Pelum Elementary's budget by $25,000. That we um have two budgets in front of us, one with the $6,000 included and one without the $6,000 included. So that it does not seem to me like there's consensus on which way we want to go. And so this way when we reconvene on April 7th, we would be able to vote for one or the other and make a decision. >> Well, I um I don't know. I don't know. I know that's unorthodox, but that that's those are some of my suggestions. >> Okay. So, I guess I'd like to see a show of hands about whether or not to include that $6,000 this year. So, do people agree with adding in the $6,000?
I guess more comments. The frustrating part for me, like tonight before coming to the meeting was I was trying to find a copy of the but proposed budget. Couldn't find it. I looked to the last I brought up the last meeting online, and I couldn't even read the slides online, they were all fuzzy. Even when I zoomed in. And my glasses didn't I don't need glasses for that. But I couldn't read it. So I was very very frustrated that I couldn't get a copy of the proposed budget so that I could have ask informed questions as to what were the specific dollar amounts that I was looking. Now I know that you've compared different years, but we can all spin it different ways as of this year I'm looking at it as opposed to this year. And you know, which year was I just would like I guess why isn't that posted to the website?
While it's while they are working hard while it hasn't been achieved, the UN is still working hard and countries across the globe are working to achieve gender equality. So promotion of International Women's Day across the globe serves as a reminder that the fight for women's rights is not over. International Women's Day helps link women all across the world, no matter if they're LDC or MDC, to fight for their rights. As you can see, the fight for women's rights is not anywhere near over. It's our jobs as the next generation to change women's rights for the better. And this is how I make a This is how I make waves for a better tomorrow. Thank you, Ree, for a wonderful presentation. We appreciate your respect. Please head directly to your pace periods. Thank you. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Hey. Hey. Hey. Heat. Heat. Heat.
Could I see a show of hands? So, nobody wants to include it in the budget for this year. Nobody said yes. So, seems to me that's the recommendation that we don't include that in the budget. William, >> I just want to say I don't I would not recommend that Ammerst subsidize that position though. Like even though I don't want to have that 6,000 in the budget, I don't want to have the 6,000 in the budget the way it's presented and I would like to know what our costs are to support the person that's currently doing it. Shannon. >> Yes. >> What Rachel suggested about having two budgets in front of us assumes that we would have Well, there's a couple of possibilities. We have about a week and a half to our scheduled budget vote and we can't put that off. We have to we have to vote then so we can get the number to the town.
Why aren't the teacher salaries the the town hall salaries? Why I can go online. I went to comparison for you, Michael. Sudbury, and I typed in salaries town manager. Boom, it popped up. It gave me 20 year 26, 27, and 28. I go to Ashland, I got nothing. Nothing. So why is it, that would be the first question, why is it that we are not posting these and instead asking the public to pay for these public records? So two questions I guess there. I can answer the first one about the fields. That's more appropriate for me. So we need to go back 15 years um when the turf fields were initially um implemented. And at that time there was a group called the Ashland Fields Management Group, and um Tony Schiavi was the was the town manager at the at the time, and at that point in time, the fields, although the school fields were in existence, there was a a conversation then about who should be responsible for collecting the revenue, booking the fields, non-Ashland public school events, if you will, right?

um for the warrant. I'm sorry, my brain just lost it. Um it it sound Can I just It sounds like we possibly need three options and I'm happy to do all of them and we would have them by the 7th. One is a budget without the 6,000. One is a budget with the 6,000 as presented and one is a budget with the current registar and what percentage of their salary would be for them to continue doing it and if that's what you would like to see I'm happy to provide it. >> Yeah, I see a lot of nodding heads. Thank you for offering that. All right, so I think we're in agreement. Does $25,000 sound okay to everybody for an ask for the town? I'll get I'll get you. Can we figure out what the percentage is? I said that number really without doing the work I should have done.
And and then what would happen to those funds? So there was an enterprise fund set up at the town on the town side, not not the schools, not the revolving accounts, right? So over the course of time, um the intent back then, cuz I was around, uh the intent then was to to collect the the fees and then be able to replace the turf, etc. It doesn't materialize in terms of because at that point in time Hopkinton didn't have turf fields. Now they have a plethora of them, right? And many communities do as well. So our revenues that were generated then um and today do not um align with what they were thinking back then. However, uh the revenue that has been coming in for the fields uh has helped support some of the DPW um salaries as well, because they're the ones who are responsible, right?
Before we begin, we like to ask our audience to be respectful of our presenters by keeping all electronic devices silenced and refraining from talking. The students have put in a lot of work. We're going to start with our presenters for period three. Our first presentation of period 3 is from trash to treasure, reimagining our oceanceans's future by Sienna Souza. She loves to cook and explore nature. This is her first TEDex talk. Um we are so happy that she chose to be part of our club. Sienna chose her topic because she loves the ocean and believes not enough people understand the impact our actions were having on the rapid decline of our climate. Please welcome Sienna Souza. Now, I want everyone in this room to imagine life in 20 years from now. You and your family have decided to take a summer trip back to your home on the coast of Massachusetts because truly nothing could compare to the warm hug of your hometown beach.
Sorry. >> And so somebody suggested 1% >> which should be like a little less than 20,000 I think because it's 1.8 million. So 1% more would be 18,000. >> That's correct. Um, and yeah, I can I have my little formulas in an Excel, so if you want to give me a percent, I'll pop it in and tell you. >> How about 1.25? Half of what the other departments are getting. >> Yeah, I like that. >> Um, 1.25 is 22,551. >> Yeah, let's go with I I would like >> Yep. Yeah, I see all the heads nodding. Okay. And then I wanted to quickly ask um does Shannon have a special restaurant that she likes to eat at with her family because maybe we should send some kudos to her for having to work so hard to do three more presentations for us by next week.
So what will happen, theoretically, and this is how it should work, is the Ashland public schools will collect the fees just for the Ashland public school properties. And then we would collect those and put them in our revolving, and then pay out the um if we So for instance, we have a custodial staff, maintenance staff currently assigned to fields in our athletic department. So that could help offset some of the cost there. Uh the the rentals. So the rental money comes into the the schools now, and will be distributed for school employees only for the fields. Does that make sense? Yeah, I guess I'd ask why hasn't that been done already. Great question. It should have been. But at one point we I didn't take control of it. I wasn't superintendent then. It was taken away from the schools. Okay. DPW, believe me, they don't want anything to do with the rental properties.
Think about the smell of the fresh salt water and coconut sunscreen hitting your face. Taking that first step into the hot sand that melts between your feet and soaking your tan skin on the chilly ocean shore that sends a tingling sensation down your sunburnt back. A perfect beach day that feels like a nostalgic breath of fresh air. You think about how lucky you are to have grown up in a place as beautiful and as peaceful as this. It's a good feeling, right? But what if I told you that in 20 years, our local beaches and waterfronts that were once something this town took pride in would be filled with trash, have high levels of toxic chemicals, and polluted water filled with thousands of bacteria harmful to many species. A recent study shows that by 2050, over 35% of the world's beaches could become inaccessible to the public due to unstable conditions.
>> Oh, you're too kind. But >> maybe you can drop that off somewhere. Drop some hints about what restaurants you like. >> Yeah. Well, thank you. >> Okay. All right. So, we are going to present a budget that has an additional 1.25% from the town and we're going to have the three options on the money for registration school choice. Anything else? I see no head shaking. No. Um, it's I just wanted to acknowledge I really appreciated the answers to all of the questions that we posed at the last meeting which um was a separate document attached to the agenda. We didn't really talk about it much tonight, but I know it required effort for folks to get all that information back to us. So, I just wanted to acknowledge that and and say thank you. >> Thank you. I I do think it helped with some of our conversation tonight to have that information in front of us.
