Big sponsor today, Kev. Marathon Deli came through some sandwiches. Delicious. I I know Marathon Deli very well. I am a a frequent admirer of their sandwiches. I know they've got a couple of popular ones on the the menu, the Clocker and the Hiller. And located at one 12C West Union Street on Route 135 in Ashland. Marathon Deli's been a staple in the community over the 15 years. Proud supporter of WACA TV and all local athletes. So we appreciate we appreciate Marathon Deli. Yeah. We we love supporting a local local shop. And as I say, I'm a I'm a big fan. Kev loves the meatball. >> Yeah. It and the chicken farm and the turkey. And keep going down the list. The Clocker. The Hiller. The Striker. >> these great sandwiches in the Not sure I love the Hiller name. I'll have to think about it.
uh five years ago, they decided to lower the bar and just say, "Okay, non-certified teachers will open it up to teachers." At that point, they had a little over 12,000 uh emergency hires. Now, they have over 42,000 emergency hires. So, what they're trying to do, they just passed uh legislation now to try to put it back because they have students that um as we're doing these emergency hires, they now have students that have gone through their whole elementary uh their elementary years with a non-certified teacher. So, those are the things that we get concerned about. So, you know, looking forward, we're not looking and saying, "Hey, you know, um we don't want to extend uh and we're not we're not trying to uh lower standards in order and we're not trying to set the standards so high that um we're not allowing people to come in.
We have kids that are definitely on par or above that. Um high school has the business academy, the criminal justice and law academy, the help in health and medical sciences academy which is now going to welcome some new Anatomage tables which I can't wait to have everyone in here walk around and kind of look at after we after we install them. Uh we're probably one of only three schools in the entire state at least that will have those. Uh and the media communications academy. So again, these academies were created to push those students that want to excel and guess what? Let's talk about it. We're all if we have coaches in here, we're all competitive. I want to keep those kids here instead of going to the Bergen academies. Right? Stay here. Stay in the city. Right? There's no need to go anywhere else. You want to we want you to stay here.
So, that's coming up on April 23rd. So, it's getting to that time of year, awards season, and uh some wonderful things. So, that's all I have tonight, Mr. President. Thank you very much. Next item up is Governing Board update. Start with Member Destiche. Um I attended uh with um at Willow Canyon High School the JROTC US Marine Corps visit site visit, and that was really exciting. And congratulations to Nicholas. I pray he does well. Thank you. Uh I attended the Dysart Arts Festival, and I just want to also special uh give a special thanks to Danae Marinelli for putting on such an incredible event. I know there's so much hard work that goes into that, and also thank you to all of the volunteers. I know we had a a ton of volunteers this year. Um just really appreciate everything that goes into this. That's it.
Hayden Harper, Carly Haston. Carly worked bars. Hayden was an all-arounder. Peyton Hewitt. Okay. And you might see everybody's dressed up real fancy and I told Peyton she is in a cheer clinic right now and she ran over here. She was she said, "I don't think I can make it." And I said, "No, you got to be here. Don't worry about what you look like. That's that's not going to be important." But Anyway, and then uh Ellie McIntyre. Ellie's back there. Ellie was all-arounder also, right? And then Hannah Perry. And Hannah was also an all-arounder and those girls just really did all the heavy lifting most of the year and we have very appreciate it and we've got three of those girls. Ellie, Evie and Hannah are seniors. So, we will be without their assistance next year. So, we're going to count on the other ones the pull up their bootstraps and help us out.
Stay on. We're going to have about 30 minutes. We'll have about 30 minutes. Uh Carol will give us a 20 minute war when there's 20 minutes left. A 10-minute warning. and then probably five. Okay. >> Yes. >> I'm Matt with the newspaper. I may be coming around the tables. I also will not be taking down names. I I am curious to what people are saying. I may write down what is said, but I'm not going to point anybody out or take your name or anything. So, thank you. >> Okay. Okay. So, board members, if you go to your table and Carol wait till they get there and get settled in and then we'll start. facilitators. I'm going to give you kind of a hey, let's go. >> Make sure you sign in. Even if you don't speak, make sure you sign in. >> Oh, yeah.
Uh we've done this in other towns. It's it's not uncommon. Um if if you're not a minimalist, they say so. We would like to do it. We think it would help with the peer review moving it along. I don't see any harm in it. >> I would suggest that um that someone from the conservation commission or our agent also be on that call. Just so we're all aware of what transpired during that conversation. the peer reviewers work for the conservation commission and I don't think it's unreasonable to have us in the room while they're speaking with the applicant. >> I I agree and that that's most of the times when we do this usually the agents uh will attend um commission's obviously open to it um but then you get into public meeting issues so usually it's the agent. We have no objection to that.
The The Clocker Hiller. How's that? >> I don't like the name, but chicken fingers, pepperjack, hickory bacon, lettuce, tomato, and sriracha mayo. I mean, how can you go wrong with that? >> I've changed my mind. I like it. You do? Maybe we change the name something else, but sounds like a sounds like a good sub. So hey, Kev. Let's talk a little bit about um about what we're dealing with here. I think I was trying to say in during that 8-meter that, you know, defense this year. We got some new faces, but we lost we had a great great starting rookie year for Vanessa Thompson last year. Came in, did a great job. And Elea as well came in and had a great defense. Big presence in this year. They're going to be solely missed cuz I think the defense this year is going to be the the trickiest part of this game for these Clockers.
We're just saying, hey, we need to do things to make sure that if they're um going to be emergency hires, let's get things in place for them." Similar to like how um teachers we have standards for students. We don't say, "Hey, okay, they can't meet it. Let's just lower the bar." We put in interventions to make sure that they can be successful. So that's what we are looking at doing as well. So things like again when you're talking about interventions, we're looking at things to help them be successful. Um I know we talked to passages which is a program um and this is something that again uh where it would help them with test prep. Uh we're looking at things in terms of making sure that we get information to make sure that they're continuing on the path to get licensed. Um so there's certain things that we can put in place um to help them to be more successful and that I think is what we need to do not just lower standards.
So we have to provide those opportunities and that's what those are here for. Um another part of the goal here is to review the district personnel needs. All right, we'll talk about that in a little bit because I think that's a hot topic right now, but you know, are there ways to maintain these programs and shift personnel? And that's what we've been we've been contemplating and thinking about and talking about in some high level meetings. Maintain the high standards for a professional development. Be surgical with you know the professional development. Don't just put something in there that everybody have Well, let's just take this cuz it's leadership or cuz it's classroom management. No, we're working on specific things for specific people who need specific areas of improvement. That's coming. You'll see that coming in the summer and for next year because again, if you remember my plan when I got here, the first year was I need to you know, embrace this place, learn everything, learn all the personnel, learn about my administrative team and everything.
Good evening. Um I attended um on March 2nd the Valley Vista A+ Lunch. Just want to say congratulations to Principal Richards and the the whole uh high school staff, students for um their continuing it um accomplishments. Just want to say congratulations. On the 7th of March, I attended the Festival of Arts also, and a big thank you to Danae and for all your hard work. And then on the 21st of March, I attended Luke Days for the air show, and that was a lot of fun, too. So, that's all I have. I as well attended the uh Vista of the Arts um fair. It was a a great day. Was there with my family, spent a little over 3 hours there, and just to see it and hear and witness all the different talents we have when it comes to arts, and drawing, you know, show choirs, bands, orchestra.
I believe I've got that. I think that's all I've got, but we do appreciate the invitation here once again. Did you Did you have anything fresh? Okay. Her affectionate nickname. Okay. All right. Well, thank you. >> [applause] [applause] >> Congratulations again, girls and team and coaches. The biggest laugh was there was from the girls when the coach said he was from the brief. I think they knew that was not going to be possible. I see some head nods back there. We also want to take a moment to congratulate this uh winter sports season academic all-state selections. Uh, you'll see those names uh from both north and east and new tech as well, but per uh uh competing for north or east. Um, and I'll remind folks that these are selected by the coaches association. So, each sport has a coaches association and the academic all-state criteria are determined by those associations, but congratulations to the students who not only show excellence on the court, the floors, and the bars and the beams, um, but also in the classroom.
>> I apologize. I forgot one more thing. On the back of your agenda are the talking points that Kim talked about in bullet form. And the other sheet of paper is the um are the six questions. Okay. Okay. Go ahead. Time is started. >> Thanks everybody for coming. after we started. Okay. opportunity. So we ask that everyone respectful questions across two topics and we'll be comments interact with us. to listen gather feedback but will not be responding directly question. So with all that let's go ahead and get started on the first question. The first topic is the consolidation of school. Question number one in what ways of combining resources and group opportunities for students how many comments they'd like to have on that subject. example they gave would there be emergency academics extracurricular support services. You see anything in those areas? Positives buildings. classes are going to be I mean, I can trust like So question right Now start early.
My general feel on this what it is that it might be uh better if you could submit a letter to them because that way it's also in writing for uh that we could get a copy of as well. Um that way it's it's very you know there's no question of what was said or what wasn't said and everybody's on the same page. Um, but that's just one opinion. >> A letter to our peer reviewers or to the conservation commission requesting what Chris is. >> No, a a instead of a a inerson meeting, a a do it in writing. >> Oh, >> and that that way we could also have a copy of what you know it essentially be an additional document submitted as opposed to a meeting. Well, if our agent were present at that meeting, she could take uh minutes of that and and uh enter that into the record >> if she's comfortable with that.
Yeah. There there there are plenty of new faces out there. Alyssa Brown is a returning upperclassman. So that helps. And Gabby Egg. But they're also going to be working with players they haven't worked with before. And I said that there is a big jump when you go from from youth to high school. And for the first time in their lives, some girls are are playing against competitors who are three four years older than them. And it takes a little while to get used to it. But so far tonight, that hasn't been an issue. That's for sure. Yeah. Physicality is is it's a big it's a big part of this game. People think it's it's, you know, no touching, no hitting, but really it's it's pretty physical. You can tell by the bruises up and down these girls' arms after they're done playing that it is a physical game.
>> Thank you. I'm going to open up to questions, but before I do that, I just want to follow it up on one thing that you did say. Um, >> that you didn't meet and talk with Hawaiian work groups. Can you specify when those meetings were or recently? >> We've had we just had them meet again, I believe in February to go over because there we had some questions about they had provided us with the standards that they had wanted. So, we said we just had some questions to clarify. So we asked them to go back um and meet as a group. So we allowed them to go back and then um to clarify those. So those were on the we have a new business item from them for their recommendations um that was set up for our March meeting which >> So when you say we you physically met with them you physically who who >> I wasn't able to be a part of that work group.
And now this is the year where we're going to start making some major changes with regard to accountability, with regard to programs and the needs of these kids moving forward well well into the future as future Boilermakers. Um This bullet's probably something that we've talked about a million times. We're finally working on it, but guess what? It costs some money, right? Technology, facilities and infrastructure upgrades, phone. I know that sounds weird. You upgrade phones for? Well, Mr. Labou and I are working on upgrading the phone system here because sometimes some work and some don't. Um you know, for zero zero extra cost to the board. So we're actually working on that right now. Electric signage, I know a lot of schools get things donated, but I have to be completely honest. One of the most embarrassing things here for me is the high school sign when people come through.
It was it was pretty cool. Um this was uh probably my second or third year going. Really appreciate all the volunteers who were there, as well as Dysart staff who put in extra time for it as well. We move to the next item, which is motion to approve the consent agenda. Second. Motion carries. That leads us to our next item, which is information and discussion, school spotlight. Dr. Crodo. Thank you, Mr. President. Tonight we have our final school spotlight, and Dr. Asay will introduce our guests from Thompson Ranch. Good evening. It is my pleasure to present Scott Curran, the dynamic kindergarten team at Thompson Ranch Elementary. You can. You can sit if you want, but you can stand if you want. Good evening. We have a little data book that we're going to hand through. You guys can look at that as we have our discussion.
To Dr. Phillips next, uh Dr. Stallbom and Marsha Van Nayman are here to present the Edna Folger award. Uh, thank you uh for the opportunity to introduce the Edna Folger award presenter, Marsha Van Nayman. Marsha Van Nayman from the IU Columbus Center for Teaching and Learning, standing in for John Sattler from SIHO tonight. Thanks to BCSC leadership and board members for allowing us to recognize our Teacher. I also want to thank our other partners, SIHO Insurance Company, the Community Education Coalition, and the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce. This award is named for local teaching icon Edna Folger, who invested more than 46 years of her life educating students in Bartholomew County. I mean we do. So I mean minutes. Anybody have comment on this question? I'm not teaching. I'll just read that next question. I don't even sorry what challenges should we anticipate I was doing. So, I was stuck at school. I think I didn't think I graduated and I didn't like 27 28 the other guys. We want to bring it in. Okay. I would have hit anything to finally rip and garlic. That's not even good. You look like you had you had something you wanted to add. Sure. >> Prepare for a successful transition. Yes. Terrible. You're still I know that you brought that up. Maybe just having a Maybe you guys that Right away. Yeah. >> Yes. >> I saw that the All right. That decision Not just I don't think you know you do We're going to move on to the referendum. And our first question there is the impact of us.
