And when it came time for me to pick high school it was private or I was fortunate the Bergen County Academies had just opened the I think the year prior to me. And I knew that healthcare was my trajectory. And I could have gone there, but I didn't. And I think one of the things that I can value tremendously is that yes, we want to keep students here, but how do the parents know what you're going to offer? I knew because I was I grew up here. My parents grew up here. We knew the teachers. We knew the principals. We had a very, very profound respect for the education I was going to receive and guess what? I was successful, but it was very, very, very pronounced that this district had a lot to offer and the parents in the district had reassurance that their kids could go to school here and be successful because of the dedication of the teachers, because of the culture of the the Board of Education at that time.
Croto as we tour schools, interact with staff, interact with students in a very public way. Um, I have no interest in governing other school board members in my capacity as board member, I will not be supporting this. I think holding the school board accountable just like we do visitors is to me is a is a good good idea. I mean, we set the standard. Let's set let's set the standard high. So, if I'm hearing you correctly and if I'm not, please correct me. You're saying we should be doing this because other people are doing it, but you've put in a policy that it's voluntary. Well, it's basically be what Dr. Croto said is because we can't force anyone. I would have actually wrote this that it's highly recommended that board members follow this. But legal wouldn't do that, correct? I don't know. I didn't talk to legal.
Um so, I think it would be be a decision for you all to make depending upon the the uh extent of those edits. Seeing that we're reaching an end of the discussion, I'll remind everybody that the motion before us is to add a new agenda item uh item 9E, which is the new policy drafted by Mr. Major uh D525. Uh Mr. Major made the motion, Mr. Schulz was seconding. Uh I'll do a roll call vote. Mr. Major, how do you vote? Yes. Mr. Nalen, how do you vote? No. Uh the chair votes no. Ms. Lloyd, how do you vote? Yes. Ms. Lloyd, Mr. Glick, how do you vote? Yes. And Mr. Schulz, how do you vote? I. So, the motion's carried. We have uh item 9E added to the agenda. Uh I would suggest that we go ahead and pull out item 9E. That would be my preference.
>> So I was thinking of feet. >> Oh, I'm sorry. >> I was going to say 8 800. It's a fairly big site. >> 800. >> Yeah, you could get uh four uh 200 foot sections of um >> of filter sock >> unless you think that's too much. >> Is that is that it's a burm that's being left between the wetland and the site? Is that not Is that correct? >> Uh yes. >> Well, around the around the basin around the subsurface or surface basin, there's going to be a burm. Uh the other areas will grade down. Well, I'm thinking also along the roadway stuff, you know, you know, like look what happened to the >> This might be a good one for our engineer to chime in on. He's uh >> Yeah. >> online >> safety building right across the road. >> Yeah. Yeah.
Trip is just racking up the assists here in the second half. It's 12 to 5, 3 and 1/2 minutes left here in the fourth. We have Laini for two goals and two assists, so well done. Great production for a freshman. For anyone really, but particularly noteworthy for a freshman. She's a tall target. Yeah, she sure is. And now we're at that magic seven goal plateau. If Ashland can hold this or even extend it then when the power rankings come out in however many weeks that is it will be the maximum amount of credit they can get. Looks like Payton went early on the draw, so we're going to give it to Norwood. Wind Wind is picking up here, Kev. Little chilly with the sun going down. It sure is. Norwood quarterback from the top there, looking for ISO, trying to split the middle, goes around the outside, rips it.
You know, it's one thing we're talking about Hawaiian standards and the working group, but I think what I've heard from from those that have testified and others is that it's the process of the licensing, the process that the board is requiring some of these hoops that have to be jumped through that probably does not affect whether or not they're going to be um qualified in the classroom. So, how do how do you respond to that? I again I think it's a balance. I I know I spoke with a couple of you individually. Um it it depends on your you know your as an administrator I take personal responsibility for my employees and my teachers. So I definitely take the extra time in making sure cuz I have I actually have a Kaya pony teacher in this situation um has a permit and everything and so I do consult with with them myself and it's me guiding them through go this way do this you know these are your two options and making sure that they're following the process properly.
And we were able to have fulfilling careers, but if the parents don't have that reassurance, guess what? I listen to it every single day in where I work. I work with children. And the parents are saying, "I'm going to send my kid to charter school." Less teacher to student ratio. Free for me. Advanced in technologies. My kid wants to be you name it. Uh an astronaut and they're going to go there. But how do we assure the parents that their kids could get that here? They don't know. They hear charter school. They see it on social media. All the buzzwords are there and they're going to send their kids. So I would love for that $1.2 million to come back. I don't know if I cut out or not. To the district, but you guys have to take that show on the road and let people know what we're doing.
Because we got the email in February that legal did not confer concur with mandatory. And that's the legal's opinion. Oh, okay. So, did we also want to recommend, if we're going to do this, the ARS 512 requirement for background checks? This is what I was provided when I went to the legal resource, so she did not provide any ARS statute with that. I think she's saying to should we also mention that, you know, how we link back to different statutes? Correct. >> within our policy. I think that's what member Dusto just saying. Correct. Thank you. Did legal ever say if, um, if the background or the fingerprinting came back with that was questionable, what does the board do or the district do? They did not. I believe it's in that brief that um, I I do not know that. I do I do not have authority over you to um, to to do anything with the information, really.
So, that we could vote on items 9A through D as a group if there's no objection, and then vote on item 9E after that. Am I allowed to ask a question now? Uh let's let's see if we can get a motion Okay. Okay. Okay. There. No, no, that's good. Let's let's get a motion and second. Uh I think the motion's already on the table for A through D, correct? Oh, yeah. And no, no. Yeah, no, he he he motioned an amendment after A through D. No. I added E. Rich wants to take it >> Now we need a motion to approve it. Separate. My knowledge, if if there's a board member ready, this will be the first motion to approve items 9A through 9D. I move that we approve items 9A through D as presented. Second. Thank you, Mr. Nalen and Mr. Schulz.
Um the uh perimeter erosion control um around the site and especially between the disturbed area and the wetland is called out as um compost sock with silt fence. So um you know typically we we've included this as a sheet note uh in the past and it's usually around 100 ft um which we think is reasonable. You know I don't think there's a scenario where the erosion perimeter erosion controls will fail around the entire site all at once. 100 ft is I usually enough to uh address a problem area. These materials are pretty readily available. So, um, you know, another 100 or 200 feet could be available the next morning. Um, I think we typically see 100 feet available on site at all times. >> I think different erosion controls have different failure rates. I think, correct me if I'm wrong because I'm not the expert on this, but I think it's the silt fences that I have seen fail most uh frequently.
Nice stop by Duffy off the foot. She's going to feel that tomorrow. She's just seeing everything, Kev. She's playing great today. Hopefully it keeps up this season. She stays healthy. The Some of these saves have been really impressive, too. Not just little easy ones. That That looked like it was a kick save. There's been a couple others from point blank. She's just been outstanding. Tough bouncing ball there for Lily Vitti. Lily hopefully is going to calm it down here. 2 and 1/2 minutes left in the fourth. 12 to 5 Ashland. Payton Great if someone would cut through there, wide open down the middle. Ashland's Now Norwood's going to start applying some pressure here at the end of the game, trying to get that ball back to make some offensive moves. Move that ball quickly and we will be in good shape. Yeah, they are See the pressure there.
not everybody um has that support. So, um or you know doesn't do their due diligence to read through all of the steps that are required. So, um I think that it's going to require again more collaboration with with the schools and HTSB and the DOE to make sure that and the EPS for sure that these teachers are being supported. Not every principal has the time or the opportunity to meet with every potential candidate and make sure that they're on the right path. I have a small school and like I said, you know, only so many people live on Mokai. So, we want to keep them and and train them and grow our own. So, um I think it's my responsibility to make sure that they're successful and get through the qualification process. >> Our colleague um Senator Decoy certainly advocates for to grow our own especially for Makai.
It's the best kept secret. If if it does come to fruition and we're going to have these academies, parents need to know. Thank you. Any other public comments? Seeing none. Motion to approve resolution 5.1. Mr. Taylor. I have a second. Miss Eason. Let's do a roll call, please. Mr. Diaz. I don't make this decision lightly, but I vote um I. Mr. Taylor. I. Mr. Auto. I. Mrs. Eason. Mr. Kielas. I. Mr. Gabba. I. Mrs. Petire. I. Mr. Focarino. I. At this time, I'm going to open up the comments uh public comments.
So, I I do not know that. This is entering in a territory that's, um, not [snorts] been done, so um, I I'm new with this with just with you all, so going based on uh, finding out the information and and, um, you know, a- figuring out if we'd like to do this or not. I can certainly go back with more questions and should you have more questions, I I can do that. I I have a question that may you maybe you could add to that because I know that there was recent legislation where convicted, um, I I don't know if I'm getting the language right, but like a convicted pedophile or maybe somebody who's subject to the sex registry cannot serve on a school board. So, hypothetically, if somebody ever sat on this board that somebody, hey, there's there's a sex offender, what do you do?
Any questions or discussion items 9A through 9D? Hearing none, we can proceed with the vote. Mr. Major, how do you vote? Yes. >> Items 9A through 9D, just for clarity. Uh Mr. Nalen? Yes. Uh chair votes yes. Ms. Lloyd? Yes. Mr. Glick? Yes. And Mr. Schulz? I. So, that motion carries 6-0. Items 9A through 9D are approved. I think I neglected to say, but just to make sure that it gets in the minutes, the motion to add item 9E to the agenda tonight was carried 4-2 after the roll call vote. Okay. So, uh you've heard discussion on item 9E already, which would be the passage of item or policy number D525. Is there a motion to approve the new agenda item 9E? A- As a reminder, Mr. Stinner, I think the first step would be for the board to act to rescind its decision to hold the work session.
So, if we could have more uh footage of silt fences than uh the others, I would feel more comfortable. I think if you're going to put down an emergency, you know, this is be like emergency situation when you get a higher rainfall than anticipated that um and you're starting to see some breaches. Um that a filter sock would be a better because a a sil fence you have to trench in where a filter sock you're just going to put it down, anchor it down. You can anchor it down with concrete blocks or whatever, but um >> this is why I'm not the expert. Um so how how what's the total of erosion controls around the site that >> uh it's multiple hundreds of feet. Um uh >> how much of a total how many what's the total amount of erosion controls in linear be or is going to be around the site?
Nope. They They know about the seven goal threshold as well, so I think they are trying to get a couple more. At least one to Kendall smartly plays it back to Alyssa. Nice pick up by Norwood. And that high pressure worked. Turned the ball over and now they've got the the ball moving up the field. Nice check by Ashley. Right on the like right on the fingers of the Norwood player, unfortunately, but no call. That doesn't feel good, by the way. Play on. No, it does not. Looking forward to my second Marathon sub when I get out of here, Kev. It's going to be delicious. I I saved mine for after the game, Kev. Norwood behind the ball behind the net with the ball. You know, they they put that pressure on as as a defense trying to get the ball back, but now they're kind of patient here in the offensive zone.
So, she's one of the advocates there. Uh but in the sense of these individuals um having having to to go through some of these processes, you don't see any flaws in any of the processes that the board has been been um following and and and been kind of kind of strict on that there's not any any need for you folks to review some of that at this point. I I think you'll see through the next meeting that whatever um flaws or course correction that needs to happen has happened and we'll do better moving forward. Again, I think part of the um there is sort of a change in philosophy around Kauni education. I think um when it started and the permit was first introduced, it was all about going through Kauni programs and you know learning the language and the pedigogy and all of that in um without lack of a better word just um an immersive culture.
Good evening everyone. Shawn Redzio, 96 Autumn Avenue. So, to begin, I won't be as negative as everyone else. I will say that budget isn't ideal. I don't think anyone wants this budget, but the budget that we have presented us today is probably the best outcome scenario. I will say that. But, I will agree with you, Abdell, that the future ahead of us is uncertain, especially with the $3.5 million uh fund transfer, and especially with the increase in cost we have that we can't really fix. But, what I will say is that the $17 million that you pointed out, that's absolutely the reality of Garfield students. And I graduated only 2 years ago. Ask any student if they are proud to be graduating from the Garfield High School. I'll be honest with you, the the honest honest truth is, no. We aren't. And I think this is a major issue we need to fix.
How do you how do you enforce that? I assume you don't. I assume that you go somewhere else to the county superintendent or something. >> That's correct. >> That's not something you're going to do. That is correct. >> come up come get my boss off the board. >> [laughter] >> I I do not have statutory authority to >> neither do we. But neither do we. You don't, we don't. So, why are we setting this policy? It just seems Right. And I mean, I I'm not against, but the voters vote for who they want, right? We're a elected position. So, to me, if we're trying to look at doing this and, you know, I agree, we don't want sex offenders or pedophiles or anybody like that, then go to the legislature and make them put in a requirement that if someone's running for school board, they have to have this done prior to and make it a state regulation and a requirement before we get put on the ballot.
