Once you were rewarded plaques for doing so. Let's talk about reality. For seven out of nine months in school year, high school students are waking up and going to school in the dark. For two of those months, it's dark around 4:45. If safety is the concern, isn't it more appropriate for a teenager who's more capable of navigating hours in the dark than it is for a six or sevenyear-old to be out in a darker afternoon? He is progressive in movement, not stagnant in a comfort zone that can prove to be unsuccessful. Last year, he helped a friend escape an abusive house and get to the safety of another parent in another state. We provided that safe house while under duress trying to get his friend to safety successfully, and that friend is now thriving. Kian is not stuck in the way it's always been. and he's pushing for better because progress doesn't come from comfort zones.
It comes from people willing to speak up. These are real practical considerations and my son is asking you to consider them not just for himself but for others. So you say one person can't make a difference. >> Time is up. >> History has shown us differently over and over again. Rosa Parks, Frederick Douglas, Harriet Tubman, Maria Monasuri, Malala Yusf Yusafa, Jesus Christ. One person, one voice, one action major change. That's all it takes to start change. And he does have support. There are multitude. >> Ma'am, your time is up. Thank you. We've got Ann Marie Van Gordon next. >> Then we should be listening to what they have to say. Show and tell time. Good evening, Superintendent Nelson, board members, cabinet, and community. This is the letter I sent to the board March 31st. Dear board member, I am contacting you today to address the concerns over classroom printers possibly not being supported anymore with toner, thus likely being removed.
This action feels retaliatory and punitive in nature due to recent contentious situations and the board's lack of direction when it comes to negotiating with the voodoo. Are there now restraints on printers at the district district office? What will be next? Will we have a cap on copies? Will crayons and pencils become scarce? As a veteran teacher, 27 years, I have already worked through district scarcities. Do we plan on asking families for supply donations as we navigate the district's poor financial planning? What supplies can we ask for since we've been told we've been told adamantly that we cannot ask families for toner cartridges? To remove the function of a tool from a classroom against the needs of the teachers does affect the students. I feel like I now have to be the buffer between the district and my classroom. The district has lost its why and is negatively impacting students yet relies on the teachers and staff whom they actively disrespect to cover for their mistakes and animosity.
Our curriculum is shallow in teaching and depth of learning and the workbook practice is not aligned with our assessments. So I brought I was a kindergarten teacher for years. This is a kindergarten workbook. It does not align with our assessments or our report cards. This is another kindergarten workbook. And another I wouldn't dare bring in the science workbooks. They're obscenely large. So just for one standard that we teach first trimester, it's on page 353. two-dimensional shapes, circles, squares, rectangles, triangles. Are we going to get help goating these workbooks? And for TK, this is our TK workbook. We get one worksheet a week, a letter. This is my curriculum, my official curriculum, and it has no workbook, but I'm still required to teach name writing, coloring, and cutting. >> 20 seconds. >> I'll wrap it up. To insinuate that teachers are poor planners by stating they just need to plan is insulting and is further eroding our trust in district decision-making.
My plans are expected to change daily subject to site decisions that don't get communicated in advance, calendar conflicts, behavioral challenges, inclement weather, classroom emergencies, etc. We are expected to constantly pivot, but we're the ones who didn't plan ahead. The district's lack of financial planning has now become my classroom emergency. >> Thank you. >> All right. Discussion action section. Number one, adopt resolution number 2526-15 considering consideration and possible action concerning March 6 and March 8th, 2026 demands secure or correct board action on March 5th, 2026 agenda item J1. Resolution number 25269. I move that we adopt resolution number 2526-15. Can I get a second? >> I'll second that motion. >> All right.
Any discussion? Yes, I have something to say. So many times on this dice, I have experienced the effect of discriminatory and unlawful decisions, a mindless machine driven by misinformation, self-preservation, and a blind following with no paper trail to prove it. Individuals were taking steps to cure and correct attempted unlawful action taken by our board president to table a failed resolution. supported by our board clerk while those that know law were not heard. The only ha hope we have is when people find courage to speak up. So, thank you to those who brought this forward. Please know that I hear you and appreciate even the smallest bit of reason in this madness. I make a motion to table this item so we can review and add details that convey the full truth of this event. >> I second. Oh, we have a motion on the >> There's already a motion on the table.
Yeah, excuse me. I retain the floor. >> Each of us was elected to this board to serve in the best interest of our students. Kids should be our priority. >> Trustee Buchanan, as president of this board, it is your responsibility to act as a facilitator and voice box for this elected body, not in service to any one individual or self. Under Robert's rules of order, a member can move to amend, table, or postpone a motion indefinitely. These rules provide structure and ensure a body can do its job. Every carefully crafted agenda item should not be fed to us with a silver spoon. We were elected to be a check and balance system with the ability to think independently and ask questions, not coddle leadership when things go wrong. Let me remind you, after raises, we will be spending $10.5 million on repeat without going into debt.
No individual has the right to micromanage meetings and ignore the law. I'd like to bring our attention back to my motion on the floor to table this resolution so that we might reconsider its validity. I move that we table this motion. >> And I second it. And there's still a motion on the floor. And we are governed by Robert's rule of order. >> Discussion. Does any other trustee have discussion? >> I still have discussion. We are ruled by Robert's rule of order. Is this correct, President Buchanan? >> We do not have an adopted. >> Any governing body is ruled by Robert's rules of order. Would you like to continue your comments? >> I would like you to acknowledge my motion. >> I did. >> And the second on the floor, we have a motion on the floor. >> Let's go ahead and move forward to take a vote.
We will direct motion. >> But we will I will call for the vote on the first motion, which was to adopt resolution 2526. >> I call on my board members to >> Renee, if you >> speak up. If you are so versed in Robert's rule of law, you know, the first motion gets voted on first and then if that motion fails, we can just move your motion forward. >> That's that's actually incorrect. And I did explain specifically when a motion comes up because it was placed on an agenda, it doesn't automatically guarantee we vote on it before we consider amending, tableabling, or indefinitely suspending. This allows our body to be able to work as a body and not be dictated by a individual. >> All right, we'll be taking a vote via roll call. Mrs. Long shore. >> Um, can we have more discussion on this?
>> Yes. What would you like to say? >> I would like to say that I have concerns about this since there were two curing corrects. We do not have official board minutes until May on this. We have the resolution back as the next issue in its entirety. It's has not been changed. I I think that we need to be cautious in not uh answering the curing corrects. Uh during the meeting after the motion did not pass immediately it was stated that it was going to be tabled and brought back. Now, the fact that no official action occurred, we still have this motion back. So, it kind of looks like even though you're saying there's no official action, the result is the resolution is back. That's a concern that um I think we need to be aware of and be considered because I think it's going to cause issues with uh further litigation or complaint >> of all the things that this board hears and all the allegations and all the liability that's being brought forward.
forward that's putting this district in jeopardy with lies and deceit and slanderous comments. We're worried about a cure and correct on a motion to support the superintendent. >> Is that what you're saying? >> I'm saying that we need to follow procedure. I do not feel this is in the best interest of the board. Um, I'm not addressing anything else other than if we are following rules, we should follow rules. >> I agree. But we don't follow rules. So, >> but that's that doesn't >> we're following the rules in this position because it's my understanding that this was uh sent to uh legal and that um it was to stated that this was perfectly legal and does not open the district up for liabilities to move this forward. It's amazing to me that there's so much uh hate and animosity to keep this thing from moving forward.
I mean, we're acting like uh you know, it's the end of the world because we want to support the superintendent of the district. So, I I ask that we call for the vote, Madame President. Um unless uh Maria, do you have comments? >> I've already stated my position. >> Okay. >> I I I just want to clarify. We're considering the resolution of the cure and correct, not the resolution to support the superintendent. >> I know that's next though. So, >> but the resolution we are supporting is is that we cannot queue and correct something that is already is not even required for us to correct. >> Correct. >> Yes. >> All right. So, we'll take the via roll call. Mrs. Longshore. >> My motion is still on the table, so I feel like we need a vote on that first. >> Mr. Raleigh. Hi. Mrs.
Tucker, >> no. >> Miss Apara, >> hi. >> Miss Buchanan, I are you abstaining or would you like to vote on the one that's on the table? Mrs. Longore. Oh. Um, I was waiting for my motion and the second to be recognized so we could take a vote on that. >> Well, you have to vote up or down on the one that's on the table. >> I would just put refuse to vote. Okay. >> I don't believe that's it. I think I'm acknowledging that there's a motion on the table right now and a second to table this resolution. So, I believe as a board we need to move forward and vote on that first. >> We understand your opinion. Right now, this motion passes 31. So, I'll move on to item two to adopt a resolution 252609 in support of Superintendent Tre Nelson. I move that we adopt this >> and I second and I'm sure there's discussion.
So if you want to start Rene >> Does anybody have discussion on this other than me? I'm happy to share. >> I I do as well. >> Okay. >> Did you want me to go first or I'm okay with you going first if you'd like? >> Just go down the list. >> How about you, Trusty Tucker? Did you have discussion? I I stated uh quite a bit on this at the last meeting. Uh again, I have a problem with a resolution that singles out an unnamed trustee. I think if there's an issue, we need to handle it following the rules and the regulations. Now, the resolution states that it's in support of our superintendent and cabinet, but it doesn't stop at that. It goes forward to single out an unnamed trustee. I don't feel that is right. It would be different if this was solely support of a superintendent, but it's not.
And I do not feel this is the best practice to do. Uh if you look at our Congress and our Senate, they do not recommend and most legislation that I've looked up does not recommend exhorting an unnamed member. We have if if something is going to be said about a member, we owe it to the public and to this board to name the person and to do the procedures that go with that. Uh without doing that, it leads to speculation. It's not a good practice and I do not think we should support this. >> Thank you. Okay. In the explained background, President Buchanan stated that quote unquote, "With one member absent, no action was taken on this resolution." This is incorrect. A motion was made and a tied vote cast by this board on March 5th, 2026, which means the motion failed. Will this be properly noted in the March 5th, 2026 board minutes?
In order for it to be brought forward again, Mr. Raleigh would have to renew it. Did you >> I told Madame President that I wanted it back on the agenda. Um and I have some things to say, so go ahead and finish and I'll clarify. >> Okay. >> Comments. >> It should be duly noted on record that Trusty Raleigh renewed failed resolution 252609. Discussions began in February 2025. One year later, inaccurate financial projections have only been confirmed. This district's budgetary practices are questionable at best. Fiscal reports are off by millions of dollars and time after time still approved by the majority of this board. These are facts. Fikmat was delayed nine months before confirming ABUSD's high risk of fiscal insolveny. We all want our superintendent to succeed, but inaccurate projections led to doubt, stalling board direction for negotiations, careening AVUSD toward a possible strike. Who's responsible for this?
And now it's only been confirmed. The money was always there. 13 million 13.1 million dollars this year and 10.5 ongoing with $4 million to spare for classified management and certificated staff. But now we are cutting supplies to classrooms. Classroom printers have been a part of the roughly $13 million of cost in books and supplies for the past three three years. This year we've allotted roughly $22 million in books and supplies. Believe me, $1 million can be shaved off $2 million without affecting our classrooms. Let the teachers print. 57 days ago, our teachers and counselors expressed a vote of no confidence in our superintendent. Can you imagine why passing this resolution tonight would be disrespectful? Felt like a sharp and stinging slap to the face of those who will stand in front of our students tomorrow morning. There must be a better way to unite ABSD other than pushing this divisive resolution through.
I make a motion to table resolution 252609 so that this board can consider the impact of this decision on our community. >> I second. >> Okay. So, I have some discussion on this um item. So, I think we all know why this resolution 2526 in support of Superintendent Trainee Nelson was put on the agenda. Obviously, it's the labor union's right to stand in front of the dis here and tell the board of trustees that they have no confidence and there was a vote. That's their right. It's also the right of this board to place something on the agenda to state support. Now I think I have a unique uh of background to uh talk about this. Uh I have served uh in government for 33 years. I served under five sheriffs. I was the mayor of the town of Al Valley for two terms out of eight years being elected.
I supervised and worked for three town managers. I served as a board of directors for division five, a Mojave water agency and served uh and supervised three general managers there. And so I have a unique uh role. I'm not a teacher. I was never in education although I did graduate from the Apple Valley Unified School District uh 50 years ago. Uh, but my background is not in in in education. So when I came on this board eight years ago, I didn't know Trenson. I didn't know Matt Schumberg. I didn't know Pat Sawler or Dustin. I didn't know Kylie. I knew hardly anybody. I knew Dennis Bender who'd been around longer than I was around. And so when I got on this board, it was actually Tom Hogerman who was uh the superintendent for a short period of time. And before I got on the uh the board, I did some interviews and spoke with some uh members that worked for the district and they're like, "Hey, Rick, if you get on the board, can you know try to get rid of Hogerman?" You know, and it wasn't everybody.
It was just a few voices. But and then it was, "Oh, well, you know, we don't want we don't like this superintendent. We want this person." So, you know, this goes with the territory um that whoever sits at the the top seat is always has a target on their back, no matter if they're a city manager, no matter if they're the superintendent, sheriff of the sheriff of the county, uh whoever, CEO of a company. And so, I came into this job with an open eye. And uh and um when I when Tene was sworn in, which was was a short time after I was um you know, I had some um um ideas to her like, you know, maybe you should try this, maybe you should try that. Whether she liked them or not, I don't know, but she implemented those ideas. She was receptive to those ideas and um she came along and she did what the board asked her to do.
