Let me summarize, please. Yes. Mahalo for the opportunity to testify. Thank you. We'll go back to Janet. Or Janette? Uh Aloha, Chairs and Vice It's still not working. We'll come back to you again. We'll go to the next person. Susan Piccola Davis. In person. Not here. Anyone else wishing Oh, you are here. Okay. Thank you. Wouldn't miss it for the world. So, um my written testimony was me trying to get clarification between how the bill changed from early childhood education investment special fund to what was in the past SB 3334. I got clarification from the public access room this morning. So, as a member of the public, I consider myself a kama'aina. I do not appreciate the way this bill went from one bill to the other. I don't understand all of the um the process for the legislature, so that's on me. I'm still strongly opposed.
But great success for North and very proud of those students. Also very proud. We always do well with Evans or leadership everyone's celebration of leadership awards. That big communitywide event was held just a couple of weeks ago. Uh and we had two winners associated with the EBSC. Uh Christine Lararsis uh is the beauty teacher at Scott Elementary School. Uh she won the leadership everyone CO award and the bossy instrumental boosters also won. Uh so really proud of those individuals representing the EBSC in our community. We did a what's happening with Dr. Hoover. This was on um EBSC summer musical company. And once again, as I always say, I won't say much about that because you're going to hear from a couple of individuals that you hear in just a few minutes about that. But it was great to be a part of that. I know Dr.
What's your like uh as far as like your sweep schedule? Are you doing like a couple still at the high high and stuff like that or middle schools and stuff like that were checking bags and stuff like that as far as like dogs and Oh yeah. Yeah, we're still doing it. How many times do you usually do that? Uh well, I was going to do it before spring break. Um but I decided to do it when we came back. So, I'm going to touch base with the sheriff's department and I'm shooting for some last week. But no, that's good. He's just getting a high number of vapes and stuff like that. We are not. Really? Yeah. It's really surprising. Yeah, which is good. Not to say they're not in there. I remember Mike showing me like 100 or 200 at a time for a year, you know.
Okay. So, all this is all year round, too. The Cyber Tigers put in work. I've I know that for sure. How much time do you think you guys are putting in and outside of your time here at the school? Well, I can't really say for them. But for for me in games like Smash Bros, I put in plenty of time. I'm I'm sure it's I'm sure it's the same for for people like Hunter and Bartolo playing at the level that they are. I'm sure they put in hours after school as well very often. So, right now we are just waiting for our first match of the night. Uh Hunter versus Barbosa. I believe are there scholarships now for e-sports as well? There are scholarships, yes. Okay. Is that for any of the games or just certain schools have different games that they focus on? Uh certain schools have different games, but most of the time there's like uh certain pool of games that you'll that's like normal to see, stuff like Overwatch, Smash.
Working it around now. It's number 13 with it coming in. Oh, good steal from Hartinet. But she's going to get called for that. And Hollist's going to have a real nice look at Moral. >> Isabella Moral in net for the Raiders wearing sweatpants this chilly day. All right, number 13 comes in and that is the first goal of the game and that was scored by Caroline W is what I have on here. 808 on the clock in the first quarter. Holl with the first bite. Unfortunate for the Raiders that their goal got taken back, but still a lot of lacrosse to play. All right, back to this that center dot. Ref getting ready to blow his whistle and we're on again. H gets it. H being chased running to this near side all the way to the corner. This should be number 25 with it.
Oh, cuz you're going to follow up with him. Okay, so superintendent, um you recently made a statement that the Department of Education will conduct statewide professional development in the science of reading. So, how Why is that necessary or is that lacking as far as teachers are not getting that teaching knowledge or or you know, while they're while they're going to getting their degree? Explain that. Yes, um teachers uh through um their experiences, um are are exposed to a variety of different instructional strategies related to reading. The department has been fortunate to uh um receive a CLSD grant. Uh [clears throat] in that uh comprehensive literacy development grant, uh through that grant, we are focused on the science of reading. That is uh one of the areas that uh the department is focused on in terms of reading instruction. Uh there are other strategies also though that help to support students' growth in reading and teacher professional development.
I want you to still please defer. Senator Dela Cruz explained to me the last time the difference between a superintendent created position and a legislatively approved position, so I'm not going there. But where I am confused is for what reason would you have to the Board of Education doing performance evaluations on complex level superintendents? How do you train them to be objective? How do they get their information to do this? Usually performance evaluations are based on observation and also input from maybe the principals and maybe higher level superintendents. Susan, can you I'm done. Thank you. Thank you so much.
Hoover, you enjoy being there. Um, and I always say this when you there's nothing better when you do a video when you talk to theater kids. I mean, they just love talking about it. Their passion, their excitement, it's really inspiring. So, that was that was a great episode to be able to do. Uh, and last but not least, congrats to the New Techch Institute robotics team. They always have great success and have really built a tradition there. Um, and congrats are in order to them again. They won the district competition this weekend up in Washington and that qualifies them for the state competition here in two weeks. And um they actually had this was sad just recently their coach who's a parent actually passed away and uh certainly sad for the school, sad for the team, but they kind of rallied together talking to principal Chris Gibson and and really came together in his honor and it did not stop them from being successful in this competition.
Oh yeah. It's It's come way down. Excellent. Either they found a better place to hide it on themselves, but and of course the dogs don't approach them, so Exactly. But we do what we can do. Thanks. And I try to do it at least every other month or something. Sometimes sheriff's department it don't work out, so we'll skip a month and we'll go ahead. So Yeah. Any other questions? Thanks. Thank you very much. Move on to number seven, principal update. Building building principals will update the board on their respective buildings. Who wants to go first? I think Michelle will eat you up right there. Let me go. Let me go. Let me go. I'll go first. I might go first if the bar isn't set already. Um just a few things for you. Um we had uh our first round of preschool registration right before spring break.
A lot of the stuff that we offer can be found at a bunch of different other uh colleges. Okay. But yeah, there are e-sports scholarships. I'm trying to get uh Hunter's looking at the the stream where his match is going to be, the the IHSE one. Yeah, I think with the I think with the exception of Hunter just looking for the looking for the stream that he's going to be on. He's going to be famous. Uh a lot of our Cyber Tigers are just uh you know, playing friendly matches, getting warm. Okay. So, if your if you're basketball game, you have a warm up, do you do that with e-sports as well? Basically, yeah. So, that's the friendly matches that you're talking about to kind of get Yeah. The friendly matches, no stakes, just to make sure you're not going in cold. Okay. It's essentially putting up practice shots.
Maggie M getting chased by a few Raiders. Two actually. And Raiders coming out of with it. Pass up to Sophia Mley. Quick dish over to Lynch. Lynch back to Schneider. Schneider looking to go around. Peasant. Nora. Norah. Olsen draws a call. Ref has a flag in his hand. >> And it looks like Nora M is going to the box. Nor Olsson with a good opportunity as the Hall Hollist goalender >> who is what number is she Alison? >> Which one? >> The goalie. >> 34. Oh, quick pass and the goalie [snorts] who's number 34. Thank you by the way. Amelia H with a good save on Luscout shot. Hollison getting some pressure here. Trying to work it out. >> Good heads up play by Brooklyn L. >> Now the Raiders defense is swarming. Good play Mly. Quick pass up and Lynch. Shot saved. Amelia. All right.
Um but one of the areas that we are focused on is in the science of reading with the schools that are participating in the grant. Okay, I Yeah, I I feel that the science of reading is very important, but again, I'm wondering whether or not we need to do a better job at the level where the teachers are getting that >> [clears throat] >> you know, going to school for their degree, that it should be more than it would be less that the department has to then go back and be trained or be developed. I mean, I'm certainly there should be some further development down the line, but to what degree were you talking about when you said the department will conduct statewide professional development science of reading and then what that cost might be because if that should be taken care of what before they even, you know, become a teacher.
>> Any questions? Okay. Uh anyone else wishing to testify on this measure? Hearing none. Uh questions, members. Anybody has questions? Yeah. So, for the superintendent. Oh, is she ready? I don't think we have her written testimony from Janet. Go ahead. Janet. Hello, Janet. I'm going to keep her help. Yeah. Okay, we have your testimony on file. So, uh thank you. We have to move on. Okay, members, questions. Anyone has questions? You have questions? Yeah. For the superintendent. For superintendent. Okay, so the HRS 32A-1116 provides the department authority to create uh temporary positions that it deems necessary. So, that's what what one of the I guess the CASs in Maui. Yes. Yeah. Um it says that the department's expenditure shall not exceed its allocated budget, so you have to figure out how you're going to pay for it. Uh but number two, the term of each position shall not exceed 1 year.
So very proud of New Techch and President Duckworth. That is it for good news. >> Thanks having him at EVSC. Thank you very much. Moving right along, we will go into 2.01 public comment. Mr. Shoulders, are you uh >> I'll be happy to try to do my bestation of shoulders. And as he would say, what does he normally say? Two minutes with Larry. So Larry is here with us again this evening. South. Larry, if you come forward, >> let's not be a trackmate going on today. >> No, we got Kuanas awards tonight. >> Okay. >> Maybe talk about leadership next time. A lot of nominations from EBSC on in that leadership program. A lot of people got nominated. Did win the award, but a lot of nominations. Uh I'm a member of the Evans Aquinus Club. Each year we have eight banquetss at the Career and Tech Center.
We're looking at that a little differently this year. We thought we would do um a daytime one. Then coming up in May, we'll do another evening one and and see how that works spreading it out. Um what was great is that it in our first callout, we have about 26 kids. Last year at the main one, we had 22 signed up. So, that's really encouraging. We're happy to see that. Our kindergarten registration and screening will happen tomorrow beginning at 3:30 in the multi-purpose room in the elementary. And this year we've got 70 already signed up. Last year at this time we were about 60, 61. So, numbers overall are looking positive, which is a good thing. Um our parent involvement events have been still going. We had again on that Friday For some reason why it remind me never to pack Friday before spring break with all of these things.
That is a good way to put it. All right. Is that usually a half hour before, 15 minutes, or what do we Um yeah, the players have had about um they've had their hour and a half of normal practice and they've had their half an hour before 5:00 when the games are scheduled to start. Okay, so they practice the same day as the event then. Yes. >> Same day and then do their warm-up matches as well. Yeah, on almost all of our eSports I believe the game days are the same days as practice days. I think Mario Kart was like the one exception. Like I think that's it. It was just like Okay. scheduling stuff. Okay. I was watching some of the warm-ups and they move pretty quick with Tetris. There's a lot of decision-making that's going on in a very small amount of time.
Pass up to Luscow. Luscal pass it down to Olsen. Olsen. Molly. Molly to Schneider. Schneider quick in front and what a goal. Schneider finds. Who was that? >> Do you know what number that was? >> I think it was. Do you know who scored that? That was >> Oh man. >> Sorry. But that was a nice goal though. >> No one saw it. >> All right. Now Mley coming down. I think I want to say it was Williams, but not 100% sure. Looking around. Quick pass up to Olsen. Olsson's shot gets deflected. Now Luscow trying to bring it up. Gets chipped away. Poked away, I should say. The back pass up. Oh, you know what? I think it might have been sacks, but who knows if you know just um Oh, look at that. Good pass up and Luscow from Sachs. That was a good goal.
We We do have um um different complex areas and schools that are participating in the CLSD grant, the federal grant. Uh we are also very fortunate to have a good relationship with um the University of Hawaii, College of Education at Manoa as well as the other um colleges that uh we do have articulation as I shared earlier through Hawaii P-20. Um and uh and I focus on that collaboration. Okay, so the grant, the federal grant, the CLSD grant. Yes. How How much [snorts] is it for and how long is it? Um I will ask Deputy Armstrong cuz she's a very instrumental in that grant. Hi, good afternoon. Heidi Armstrong. Um currently we're in year two of a five-year CLSD2 um grant. And the science to go back to your question, the science of reading is very important and the the pendulum swings and uh whole language was all of the talk for many years and um the department has adopted the science of reading model to teach students how to um read and write.
And the two deputy positions have been longer than 1 year. It is. Yes. So, that's already a violation of the HRS. Um I will take a look into that. I wasn't aware of that there was a year on it. Uh and it says here that the department shall report the creation of temporary positions uh to the Department of Budget and Finance. But I'm more concerned about the fact that these positions have lasted longer than a year. So, you're not really following the HRS. So, I understand what she's saying, but the law is the law and these positions have been much longer. Um so, I will take a look into that. I wasn't aware that there was a 1-year uh maximum on it. Okay. Question. I have a follow-up. Um do we have any other Did you create any other positions that has longer than a year?
We honor student athletes. We honor talented musical students, uh outstanding academic students, uh the career and tech program to pick a winner out of each one of those each year. Uh the teams that we the sports we might miss, the Green River Aquanis, that's an East Side Evo Aquanas. They they pick up they have some banquetss also. Uh Quantis Focus is is youth. Uh March 4th at career in tech. We had winter sports, boy and girl basketball, boy and girl swimming and diving, boy and girl wrestling. First time we've had the girl wrestling. Uh the format is we invite the student, we invite the parents, we invite the coach, and we invite a school administrator. So there's over 100 people at the career and tech center. And these bios are just outstanding. I mean these kids, they they make outstanding grades. They play two or three sports.
