Uh it wasn't our intent, senator, to circumvent the legislature. It was it's my understanding that uh we could appoint to a temporary position. And so uh these in the our deputies that are in the positions are appointed yearly um as reflected in their form five. Because if that's the case, why even ask the legislature for positions, right? That you can create 200 whatever you want and then you just constantly annually appoint. I I I think the permanent positions are important uh because it it provides our employees with the stability that they have um they have a they have a permanent position that they're sitting in versus a temporary position. So I um individuals that accept a temporary position accept it with the understanding that it's on a year-to-year appointment. Yeah, but you would just continue to do what you're doing now. Um if the need was there.
There's a couple of really big partners for Glennwood. Um just making sure that we're connecting those people, but we'll do a thorough interview process for that with Angie helping to craft uh that process with us. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Thank you. Thank you very much. >> Good question. >> Thank you. >> Any other comments or questions? >> Excuse me. >> In regards to personnel recommendations, all those in favor do so signify by saying I. I >> opposed. That carries. Thank you. Next on the agenda is the district spotlight. Dr. Hoover. >> So, I am very excited tonight to have two people with us to share uh about the EVSC summer musical company. We have Dwight Emert, our director of fine arts, and Joselyn Rogers, who is a junior at North High School. >> Dr. Hoover, President Duckworth, and members of the school board.
So, we're really excited about that. And our our PTO has just done such a great job and and been such a great conduit between the building, the the school itself, and our community. I really applaud the efforts of that group. Uh and then last, our community choir performance is April 13th at 6:00 in the KMS cafeteria. Once again, an opportunity come out and uh see the kids perform. Uh and and they're really good and they get excited about that. So, I'm looking forward to that as well. Questions, comments, concerns about KMS? When are they starting on the um the learning pavilion? It's going to be this summer. It's going to be a summer job. And how long are they thinking it's going to take? They think it's going to be done by when the kids come back for school. Really? Yep. And we have a number of local contractors that are contributing equipment, supplies, and time.
Jordan StrixyX1 is going. And we still waiting on the next one then. Final match is Bartolo. Well yeah, we do have Bartolo and Emmett both in a lobby so I'm sure we're just moments away from starting our last match of the night. The cyber tiger v cyber tiger Bartolo, seed two of the tournament versus Emmett, seed seven. When preparing for this game, do they memorize strategies almost like a chess piece when you're playing chess? You have all kinds of moves and strategies that you prepare. Are you doing that with this game as well? Um, I'm not sure how comparable Tetris is to chess. I'm saying memorizing moves and looking at strategies. Is that I I guess I guess you could say that in the sense of like they have like openers and specific like ways they want to do things in a specific order. I guess you could compare it to that a bit.
Spalding centers it. Sacks. Sachs with those blue cleats gets stopped. Williams though right there to scoop it up. Help out. Williams passes to Lynch in the corner. Lynch to Lascow. Let's go. >> Looking for an option >> behind Amelia right now. Amelia watching. Pass it to Spalding. Spalding passes up to sacks. Sacks. Looks like she's going to maybe shoot it and does. And another save from Amelia. >> She's a fantastic goalie getting really tested as well. Now Sachs putting a lot of pressure on >> a Panther in the back field. >> Oh, she loses it. Saxs makes her drop it. Saxs takes it. Sachs passes it over to Lynch. Lynch now >> was behind Amelia. Passes it right up. >> Williams. Williams with some good moves. And there's a whistle. >> Some foul. Well, now Williams is going to get a good look on Amelia H right now.
I I don't know what what the issue is but certainly these questions should be asked because common sense tells you that I don't know if it wasn't broken, is it broken now? I would say that students perhaps like you and me, it wasn't it wasn't complicated at all for us because clearly we are here where we are today but there are students that do struggle with reading and I think part of the work that we've been doing is to make sure that we're serving all students and ensuring that everyone has what they need when they leave. >> Then why don't we just single out or or acknowledge those that have trouble and spend the money on them instead of trying to change the whole system um cuz again one size doesn't doesn't fit all. So, why wouldn't we be doing that instead of trying to just change everything or making it so complicated that again, I don't know if common sense is have a role in any of this.
Yes. So um superintendent, so did you renew them the the two the two um deputies, did you renew them? Yes, I did, senator. >> them when in December or when did Um I'm not sure of the exact date, but it's at the end of the year um they were renewed in the in their positions. >> See that Can you send us that renewal statements? Sure. So for the attorney general, how how often All right. What's what is the flexibility? They can continue to circumvent and just annually appoint as long as they want? Um I I think it's going to be um restrictions on how their their budgets are set up, but I I would still need to take this specific issue back to the education division. I'm I'm sorry that I'm the one here and not them. I'll I'll relate those concerns to them though.
Thanks for having me to talk about one of my favorite topics which is the EVSC summer musical company and from the fine arts perspective is also the most public facing endeavor we we do. Um so obviously we know it's very important. This is our 38th version and and we are starting it with a renewed commitment to the education of our students and the best possible show for the audience. For many years, we've been studying the summer musical experience with a desire to bring a cyclical process to the effort similar to our other district honors programs. Simply stated, we want the students to own the knowledge, be able to apply the skills in new ways, uh go back to their schools and help the schools improve, grow with their schools, and then eventually return to the summer process stronger in their new set of abilities. and and you know and uh uh performance and so and then of course then we want the cycle to to continue and start again each year where we are both you know the summer musical is is pushing the theaters uh school theaters forward and so forth and so on.
Some of them free of charge, some some at a slightly reduced charge. Great. Yep. What's Where are we at with the fencing? I I remember there was some talk about doing some fencing along that road. That's part of that project. >> Okay. Uh we're going to do that last, I believe, after we get uh the pavilion built and all of the equipment put in the playground, then we're going to put the fence in. That's going to run going to run uh west of the parking lot north and south. And it's also going to run at the south end of the parking lot east and west. Yep. It's a great idea. Yes. It's needed. Yeah, it'll be better when that when that's fenced in a little bit. Anything else? Thank you. Thanks. It's not a speech, I promise. I promise. Uh we have a lot of great events coming up for the end of the year for the high school.
All right. Much faster but Yeah, way faster. Debatable if it's more thinking. I imagine it's more instinct. I I have to guess chess is more thinking. All right, this screen seems to be set up a bit differently so Bartolo is the big board in the middle, Emmett is the one off to the side, the smaller one. Uh this is a setup that some people use to just like emphasize their board more so they just have like they're just more comfortable with where they're looking at and stuff. A bit more confusing on the viewer. But like if it's if it's what gets it done for you. And Bartolo with the T-spin triple into a T-spin double combo setting up another T-spin double. Emmett actually holding his own. I was expecting a lot of pushback from that attack from Bartolo. 17 seconds. Yep, they go fast as you've seen.
We got 848 left to go in the second quarter. And what a save by Amelia H, but Raiders still working away. This is Sachs. And Saxs couldn't quite get the shot off she wanted to because the Hollist Panthers played really good defense. Lascow now goes behind Amelia, passes over to Olsen. Olsen works it up to Saxs. Sachs well covered. Saxs finds an open Mley. Molly gets it poked away. Holl trying to get it out, but Raiders are just so aggressive in that for check. Ref says it's Hollist ball. Oh, look at that. Molly just jumps up the one hand steel and Emma Luscow finishing it off. Just some fantastic stuff by the Raiders. And that started with Sophia Mley with just a amazing onehanded jump to block the pass out the clearing pass and takes it away and finds a Luscow right in front of the net.
I do agree one size did not does not fit all which is why we were you know, against this legislation or I understand but then at the same time DOE is saying they want to go ahead and have this, you know, um exact words professional development in the science of reading. Conduct a statewide professional development science of reading. So, I'm just trying to figure out and add it up. Does it make sense? Are we Are we um spending funds and time on an area that maybe doesn't require this kind of level and if you embedded into their their learning as they are going through school, the teachers are going to school, shouldn't that satisfy that with periodic updates? I don't want to speak for the Department of Education. I will just say one last thing for teacher preparation and then maybe I'll turn it back to them.
Thank you. One last question and then Senator Kidani. So is there anybody in the whole department that didn't know that this was one year? I mean the entire department you I'm not able to answer that question, senator. As far as I know uh we did not know that it was one year. Uh we did know that I I believe it's a one-year appointment um on a on a yearly basis. >> Yeah. So it's a it's a year-to-year which these positions are. Okay. Senator Kidani. Thank you, chair. Uh my question is regarding the um requirement that every two years board must uh submit written performance evaluations um on the CASes. So the question for the AG is is there any concerns with personal matters being shared with the legislature? Um is that with respect to the proposed SD1? Correct. Um I I'm not I'm not sure what uh the education division has has noted on this on this proposed SD1.
Um to create this uh we continually return to the students as actors, singers, dancers, musicians, and performers as the center of the work. While scenery, lighting, costumeuming, and sound all help bring the magic to the musical, these aspects are generally brought to life by the adults. So making them complimentary to the student work is key. The immersive weekend camps are adding over 40 additional hours to our calendar and build additional knowledge, skill, and camaraderie. in the process. The two-week intensive brings an important urgency to the work and learning, removing the lag and momentum the transition to the center created for us. You'll find the energy will be unmistakable. Students will be exhausted after this process, but the learning will be ingrained. They will have a deeper understanding of themselves. They will own it and the success will be theirs. They will be changed forever. Joseline.
Um I wrote them out on a calendar that you guys have in front of you that they're passing around. It'll give you some idea of some of the bigger events going on at the high school from uh choir concert next week on the 13th to the band concert on the 15th. Um on April 27th, we have our academic um dinner for our top 10 um students. It's an incredible evening of of our students who who have achieved top 10 in the classroom and they they get to come to a dinner with their friends and their family and it's not just a recognition of their work, it's the recognition of of a teacher who has influenced them um over the course of their schooling and really a a honor to to them as well. So, it's going to be a great evening. Of course, each of you are welcome.
2-0 right now. Bartolo, one round away from going on another state run. Setting up a T-spin triple. Only gets the single off of it. All right. So yeah, now that now that his plan messed up, I don't think he executed it exactly how he wanted to. So he's got to adapt a little bit more, take some time, breathe a little bit, look at your blocks. He He misdropped again there. See, it's the It's the execution part of it that just adds a whole other layer of difficulty just to playing Tetris. Emmett's holding his own on this one. He is. From From 17-second game to we are already at 45 seconds. Mhm. They've been canceling each other's attacks pretty well. They're not too far away from each other in terms of like where they are on the board. Bartolo sending a quad over. That's going to do some damage.
Bada boom, bada bing. Four to one with 748 left to go in the second quarter. All right, >> Zach's going to be taking the draw for the Raiders and uh Panther goes down. Sachs grabs it past the Lascow. Lascow right up to Spalding and it finds the back of the net. got deflected, too. But that's Spalding's goal. That's her second of the game. >> Spalding, the freshman, has just been super impressive here. Um, so far for the Raiders, say the first game, I want to say she got like four goals. the second quarter. >> Yeah, she got four goals. She led the team in scoring and just that's kind of unheard of for a freshman. So, good on her. Hollist gets that one. It's going to be 25. Maggie M. >> Maggie M on that far side. passing it. Holl looking to get some goals here.
But in terms of teacher preparation, I think about learning to become a teacher and specifically learning to become a teacher who is able to teach all students how to read. I think of it as an iceberg and we're able to give them the tip of the iceberg in their pre-service programs but again I believe that they need to be lifelong learners and staying up current with current research and trends and that's what I don't want to speak to intentions but that's what it appears to be but maybe I should turn those questions back. >> spot but I'm just No, not at all. Not at all. Obviously it seems like my teachers didn't know how to teach people how to read but we did learn how to read. So, right? Thank you. DOE? Okay, see the dilemma that where I'm I'm in. I don't know if you share my dilemma but Yeah.
I understand from talking to them that this was uh substantially similar to a another bill, but I I'm not sure what their concerns were. Um but I will relate to them that there were concerns uh from you regarding personal matters shared in the uh reviews. Yeah, I think that's important for us to know. Thank you. Okay, if you would Sorry, just just a clarification. Uh the bill does say that the evaluations shall include student academic outcome progress, fiscal management, operational efficiency, leadership effectiveness um and stakeholder arrangements. So I'm not sure that there's confidential information in that, but if it is that that can be removed. Senator, if I may too um the two two positions that we um that we have that we've created are essential to the department's um the our ability for the department to uh deliver on services to support for our entire system.
>> Um the twoe uh intensive, we call it a summer stock. It's a very exciting opportunity. Um we're able to put together the show really quickly, keep it on its feet. But um these weekend rehearsals we've had have been a really great opportunity to kind of prep our skills for that and also teach us those foundational things that we need for the show and also to take back to our own schools. Um yeah, it's been great. Couple questions. Do you feel like this is going to better prepare the theater student for possible future theater involvement in college or civic work and that kind of thing? >> Yes. Because the the intense I I realize, you know, we take six weeks, we crush it down into two, but that's them doing more each day. Um, and this is very similar to a lot of different uh, like I I I run a summer performance group that does this, you know, really intensive work.
