i know there's a bonfire last night and i know there's movies tonight so there's a number of different things going on with homecoming and so uh it's a it's an exciting time in the district i've noted a number of different upcoming events just so you have them uh they'll cover through to about uh winter break then the other thing we'd like to do is this is part of our employee recognition and so we want to take and and recognize a number of different groups tonight i will let you know that in many cases there's lots of things going on and not everybody can always make the the different activities that we have but where they are invited and we will give them certificates i'll have mr mcleod go up we'll do the national educational support professional days first and so what happens is annually during american educa american education week which is next week on wednesday of that week they observe what's called national education support professionals days to honor the contributions of support staff employees these support professionals provide invaluable services and our essential partners in children's education process the day honors a long list of professionals who keep schools running and they really do do a yeoman's job many cases behind the scenes that we don't always see so we're talking about administrative assistants secretaries classroom aides parapro's cafeteria workers maintenance workers bus drivers uh all crossing guards all those kind of individuals that support our teachers our school leadership and our students and so on that wednesday just a chance to say thank you and so today what we tried to do in order to make sure we honored across the entire district is we asked different um individuals from the different schools and departments representing all the different support staff in our district to come tonight just to really like we do every board meeting say thank you thank you for the job you do thank you for all the little things you do that make the school a better place to be the district a better place to do to be so i'd like to call these people up and we'll hand them an award get a picture so from the high school front office staff secretary minister state of assistant reese evans [Applause] uh from the alternative school custodian juanita bustillos [Applause] yeah we'll slide you guys uh into the middle so we can get a picture i know they probably don't want that but we will uh at uh cms a pair pro melissa chavez at cta working in the cafeteria michaela favor at ellsworth elementary and the front office staff again josie carpenter for harman elementary a crossing guard kelly edens and i and i don't know if kelly's here or not i don't mean to embarrass her but i'm going to take a second to stop to thank for a special reason this is the little things you don't see uh i was at harman a couple weeks ago due to a situation and we were looking at crossing guards and uh there was a situation there where all of a sudden some kids came running up and said a little girl hurt her foot a little girl her foot and so kelly went over to see what's going on she was in the park across the street from the school and next thing you know a couple boys are coming by with the stop signs and there's kelly and she loaded the girl on her back because the mother couldn't come pick up the girl and carried her to her house and dropped her off and then came back it was just a little something that quite frankly had i not been standing there anybody else been standing there nobody would have noticed but those are the little things that people go above and beyond to help out our kids and again it wasn't for any other reason then that was the right thing to do and so as we honor these people those are the little things that happen a thousand times a day and again not intended to embarrass kelly but to just note that that was something that that she did when she didn't have to do it and so this is why we're trying to thank people and honor people so i just want to let you know about that with kelly from simonton a pair pro jamie newman neiman uh we did try to get a bus driver but they're a little short-handed we didn't get a chance to get one from the maintenance technician frank alvarado in technology uh district office ethan stenhof he could not be here and then from the district offices and business services sofia garcia [Applause] okay now we'll slide you guys for a quick picture [Applause] i am not sure if we've had if we had anybody that could make it tonight we had a little transition in hr but i did at least want to let you know uh the third friday of november also uh during american educators week is substitute educators day and so again this is a day to thank all those professional educators perform uh that vital function of of taking care of the classroom uh we're we're seeing it more and more in public education today especially with everything that's going on just how important these people are to our district and the job that they perform uh on a very short notice waking up early in the morning not sure where they're gonna go and then they go cover class and provide an opportunity for our kids to continue to get an education every single day and so although we were not able to get any any to come i did want to at least take take a moment to say thank you uh to all those substitutes for what they do uh for our district so thank you then the last group we'd like to honor uh tomorrow obviously is uh veterans day uh and so um veterans day is celebrated every year on november 11th regardless of the day of the week that it falls on it was first recognized as armistice day in 1919.

about 25 out from giroux 25 yards stefano shah is going to be tested here there's a decent angle on that westwood lining up on the right side dave stefano sends a nice looking shot to the top right side of the net and it just goes over the crossbar a good look though just need that one a little lower it's pretty very close good placement but it's a little high east longmeadow kicks the ball out of bounds around midfield evan's head he heads it out and it ends up on o'brien's foot o'brien will try and get it up excuse me that was not hallahan on the back right there i believe that is elias brunell trying to find luke mazza again karana back to stevens stevens will boot it up to his offensive players mazzle get a quick shot on that and easily scooped up by varnarin and he'll roll it out to elias and it's blocked down by mazza barnard another easy scoop up and this time he's gonna boot it to about midfield more now quick little hip touch finding evans evans is taken down ball goes out of bounds westwood throwing stevens we'll get it to evans in the middle morneau a change of fields over to luke mazza luke mazzle 101 nice defensive play made by roberts across field from pachetto to brunel brunel tries to keep it in and it's cleared out again to midfield by elias moreno a through ball trying to find sonny mazza ends up on the back of zuthen luke mazza once again one on one with roberts tries to find the middle nobody home there brunel ball is stolen and stevens and giroud comes out of the net it's stolen by a westwood player and he has a walking shot i believe that was hallahan kyle hallihan ben giroux tried to come out of the net and slide tackle that ball away from hallahan's foot and hallahan a quick little touch around giroux and had a walk-in shot not contested in the slightest bit just a little bit of an over commitment there by drew and that wing had a lot of speed coming in and he was able to finish it on the open net after the missed slide tackle so the assist is given to ben o'brien and goal is credited to kyle callahan one nothing westwood early in this game just under 10 minutes have gone 30 38 remaining east longmeadow trying to get something going here they've had some a lot of offensive possession but they have yet to get a clean hard shot on net to really contest varn tonight o'brien mourinho steals the ball presnel fires up the sideline and elias is there to excuse me curtain is there to block that monroe flying up the sideline using his speed gets around hallahan ball's cleared back to giroux drool calmly scoop that one up and fire it back to midfield a little bit of backspin on that one more no zoothin some quick one-touch passing by westwood in the middle sent in by pachetto and blocked by elias westwood throwing ball comes right out to hallahan and he'll send it back to his defender roberts and dave stefano some quick cut moves is able to get past two east law metal defenders enzo mazza trying to steal the throwing from westwood roberts to hallahan and halhan touches it out of bounds some good ball work there from de stefano some quick feet quick cuts he's able to get through a couple of islam metal defenders sonny mazza flies to the outside tries to get around curtain callahan he's got some speed tries to cut and split the east long metal defense a through ball up the sunny mass of sunny masses one-on-one with varn and varn makes a huge save on sunny mazza what a step up by barnard to keep that away from maz off that touch and massa will walk away with this head shaking stevens and hallahan in the far corner kicked out by stevens westwood throwing [Music] stevens will headed out of his zone enzo mazza quick rollover touch pass to evans in the middle sonny mazza passes it out wide to fresno presnel makes a nice quick touch move and gets a shot on that varneran able to scoop that one up 27-11 remaining in the first half of this soccer game var and aaron big boot out to midfield but shadow's got time and he's just gonna send it way back up trying to find sonny mazza that's headed out by zuthen comes to the middle lombard ball is sent out and curtain tries to send it up to halahan but it's gonna go out of bounds just in front of midfield ben biggins with the throw in a clear comes back to bigen's foot biggins switching fields to mike monroe mike monroe touching side to sonny mazza mazzle with a nice cut move tries to rip a shot on and it's blocked by wang some great offensive pressure there by issa meadow and almost got a great scoring opportunity some good ball movement fresno is just gonna get a little touch on net and it goes high and left islam metals got to keep battling here they can't uh let what happen in the western mass final game occur in this game this is too big of a game you know in the western mass game they kind of got in their heads a little bit started getting frustrated with each other and in a big game like that especially in a big game like this you can't be doing that you got to be picking each other up no matter what everyone's got to be confident i mean you know they're down early have the right mental have the right mental space you know absolutely on the outside tries to find evans it's cleared by westwood and i think that's vamenta on the outside there doing some work hallahan it's cleared out from o'brien to pachetto the shadow sends it to enzo mazza ends them as a chip pass up to evans evan's a head ball out wide to the sideline nobody home looking hoping monroe is going to be overlapping there but shadow kicks that head ball to the middle colin evans steals it from wang ball comes into the middle and varn chases it down and grabs possession sonny mazza chasing down varn there 25 minutes remaining in the first half the shadow the punt ends up on his foot and a quick touch out by wang goes out of bounds pachetta with the throwing from midfield it's headed out by zuthen dante bates in the game now he'll send a through ball to president on the outside and fresno has interfered with and there is a penalty on the play is that inside of the box yeah i'm not sure i can't i can't tell it isn't quite not quite just off by a couple feet really i don't believe so they seem to be inside the box they are inside the box actually but i guess they will yeah they actually it does look like they're inside the box but maybe perhaps as in comparison to this yeah that extends past the yard so maybe perhaps since uh there was a foul committed it was an interference call didn't really have the ball maybe that that's the reason for this not sure they have to look at the rule book but of course we don't have access to that evans sends a shot on that varneran scoops it up evan's a low hard shot trying to catch barnaran off guard or get a rebound or something he had a lot of traffic in front ball can come off the turf a little weird and force a rebound in an easy just in front of midfield evans and wang pachetta is just going to boot it cross field looking for president president's chasing it down varnerin varneren comes out of his six and contest president is able to win that battle enzo mazza now steals it sends it to the middle to morneau mourinho taking his time looking for options so we go back out wide trying to find preznel but it's stolen by curtin evans has got some runners trying to get a through ball to mike monroe pachetto now and dave stefan enzo mazza trying to get a head ball on the chip up from pachetta and varn comes up with a save [Music] and they stefan again they stephan again with the quick moves definitely got a lot of skill on his feet through ball into the middle looking for o'brien pachetto they stiffen again the quick ball work inside tries to get across and enzo mazza is going to clear that one out ends up on robert's foot roberts back to day stefan pachetto to the middle stolen by lombard o'brien out wide today stefan day stefan tries to chip it into the middle more no a quick touch to sonny mazza trying to go out wide at fresno another through ball up to number nine kyle hallihan that seemed to be an offside there but the ruffle not called up yeah refs not gonna call that one hallahan might have been pushing that line a little too much and certainly enzo mazza is definitely not happy right now we got some subs coming in and you know giroud is just gonna kick that one so reps aren't communicating and bates will come out and who did you catch who went in for salmeado meadow nacho there's a bit of confusion over here on the sideline they're saying that those subs could not have come out of the game they did not the uh coach and the referee did not communicate so the subs cannot quite come out yet drew with the goal kick another almost costly play another could have been a walk-in goal again for hallahan morneau out wide sends it in the middle of the base baits to evans and stolen by lombard joe presnell with the ball switches fields to monroe monroe a head ball to himself and ball goes off of roberts out of bounds now we saw metal get an opportunity to make those subs luke mazza aman karana and ryan brunell are coming in and as before president and i didn't catch the last person coming out oh monroe as well are coming out now so throw in for dante bates 19 minutes remaining in this first half it's still a one-nothing game if you're just joining us throw in a long throw-in to the middle and they're gonna say that it's a goal kick someone could not catch a break tonight a couple unlucky bounces have gone against islam metal tonight and that's resulting in the one-nothing score sonny mazza trying to fight past roberts roberts with a nice defensive play o'brien's trying to switch fields biggins to brunel brunel was chased down threw ball inside and long is just gonna or wang excuse me is just gonna clear that one out brunel on the sideline quick touch pull back move back to biggins biggins will switch fields to pachetto bushetto a one touch to the sideline to luke mazza stolen by day stefan and cleared out by zuthen and lombard tries to get it to find o'brien in the middle brunell touches around o'brien corona a through ball trying to find luke mazza racing up the side a little too much on that one goes out of bounds varnarin with the goal kick another sub for islamido colin evans re-entering the game replacing dante bates just around 17 and a half minutes remaining in the first half here and now they will set up for a goal kick day stefan one touch ends up on more nose foot paschetto to mourneau mourinho switches fields finds a through ball looking for mazza stolen pachetto sent up today stefan and mazza steps up and heads it back to midfield moreno the cutback move inside a through ball up to luke mazza and a little too much again and varnaren scoops it up so far barnard holding on to that shutout and a through ball up to halahan drew scoops it up and now elias with the ball sends it up to halahan again drew waiting for it to enter his box and he'll scoop it up and he'll send a low laser a nice heel spinning touch by more no looking up top for mazza and ghetto steals it and colin evans trying to find luke mazza again on the overlap nobody home but there was a penalty on the play so it's gonna be a islam medal free kick sonny mazza taking the kick and he'll send it just over the crossbar seems to be a bit of confusion between the mazda brothers once again islam has got to make sure that they keep their composure can't get frustrated with each other it's only a one goal game and it's a lot of time and left to come back ben biggins out wide to brunel brunel contested by curtis out of bounds off of brunell westwood throwing and the stands for islam medal are beginning to fill in more student sections filling up so is the parent section decent turnout tonight not a lot over on wes woods side as expected as expected brunel to the middle of the morneau mourneau a soft pass to karana karana and dave stefan get a little tangled up karana touch to pachetta pachetta tries to meg wang comes out to evans evan's a touch pass wide to biggins biggins inside to mourinho and it's cleared out by elias was out of bounds off of an islam medal player westwood throwing for curtis curtis trying to find hallahan up top a head ball back and forth between both teams wang and more no more no is going to win that battle a quick touch pass from mazza and mazza trying to catch varnaron off guard sends a deep shot on net sails way over the crossbar he saw metal still looking for that first clean shot on net tonight had a lot of offensive opportunities so far but i haven't been able to put a good one on that got a couple dirty ones out front sawmill still looking for that confidence goal and now dave stefan kicks it up to halahan hallahan steals it from giroud drew is out of the net and is able to stop callahan hallahan once again giroux coming out of his net and hallahan got a little quick touch around giroux and drew's able to recover and dive on the ball preventing any damage from happening mazza to mourinho mourinho back to stevens stevens out wide to brunel brunel's got some numbers head ball inside to maz that's stolen ends up on karana's foot karana's will get a nice little shot on that save by varn looks like a lot of westwood's offense is a lot of send that ball up to hallahan and let him just use his speed and attack the net that kid has a lot of speed you got dave stefan they stephan out wide here with a with a lot of skill and then you got halligan with a lot of speed up top that it works for them yeah it does mean that kid has been able to uh beat a lot of defenders so far and he's forced two drops from giroud too and had an open shot once and almost had an open shot second time yep throw in now for roberts cleared out by pashetto up to sonny mazza headed out by elias ends back up on robert's foot he'll go inside to wang ball stolen by colin evans he'll switch fields trying to look for more no in the middle and vamenta comes up with it trying to send it up again to halahan ball stolen by wang another wing brothers looks like wang sends it up to dave steffen and finds hallahan and halahan is way off sides there referee able to make that call looks like some islam metal subs would be coming in it is dante bates michael monroe and joe presnell lining up to take the usual luke mazza amon karana and ryan brunell that seems to be their rotation [Music] enzo mazza up to karana brunel's taken down on the play by curtis and biggins into the middle wang is able to intercept put a touch pass out from karana switch fields to brunell a head ball inside looking for karana brunell stolen by wang morneau a chip up looking for corona again a nice head ball defensive play from curtis brunel and vamenta battling swol ball switches fields comes out to evans wang sends it up again to hallahan and stevens is able to fight off halahan sends it up to luke mazza but a nice defensive play by roberts day stefan trying to make a quick move around stevens goes off of stevens foot and out of bounds a quick throw in for roberts vamenta back to wang wang inside the vamenta vementa tries to do a spin pullback move touched up from kirana up to sunny mazza sunny mazza using a lot of speed fires up to luke as luke as it tries to get a quick shot on that then it's deflected out of bounds by roberts oh look to capitalize here now on the corner kick as subs come in joe president dante bates and michael monroe setting or taking out karana mazza and the shadow oh no not mazza i'm sorry karana pachetto and brunell naza is still on and it is ryan morneau setting up to take this corner kick freestyle meadow with eight minutes or just over eight minutes remaining with a one nothing game it's been a pretty even game so far but obviously the bounces have just been in favor for westwood a corner kick from morneau just goes over the heads of everybody and ball came back to the inside the six to evans and he tried to touch it on net but it goes left and high out of bounds varnarin with the goal kick barnaran big boot to midfield off of dante bates head ends up on bigen's foot bringing some nice control there morneau the pullback move to give himself some space from vamenta vamenta steals it given go to wang wang sends it back to o'brien o'brien out wide today stefan luke mazza chasing down day stefan they step in across to the middle blocked out of bounds by enzo mazza a corner kick for westwood as you can see once again looking for hallahand and halhan was trying to get the jump on his defender right there with his speed after he crossed that now they'll set up for a corner kick and dave steffen cross ends up right in the direction of giroux and he just catches it drew with a huge punt up field looking for sonny mazzo racing down with o'brien sonny mazza wins the battle but it's stolen by elias and sent back up to dave stefan de steffen back to roberts on defense and roberts will send it up to vamenta stolen by luke mazza in the middle naza plays out wide to presnel a touch pass around curtis and presnel's legs were taken out underneath him by curtis it's gonna be a free kick for east long meadow about 45 yards out from barnaran issa meadow perhaps unhappy with that free kick because they were in a pretty good position with that ball with a little bit of momentum going but nevertheless they will set up here enzo mazza mazza cross out to the right side to colin evans and he heads it up to the top of the 18 nobody home presnel now battling with i think lombard president switching fields dante bates a through ball to monroe splitting the d there o'brien blocks it and a stefan tries to send another cross up to callahan and goes off of luke mazza westwood throwing dante bates quick touch to the middle looking for marnell dante bates again easy pass to biggins biggins out wide to the sideline joe president with it now a little bit of room cuts inside he's going to rip a shot on net and way high goes over the crossbar so a goal kick now for the westwood wolverines var naren with it 4 30 remaining in this first half and westwood will just try and hold on to this lead until they get to the next half barn aaron nice trap down from monroe using his chest sent back to zuthen zuthen's able to clear that one out wayne or excuse me sends it up to hallahan again and giroux comes out and this time he's able to clear it back to midfield biggins now out wide to presnel president's got some space sends it to the sideline to evans evan's across into the middle looking for monroe or mazza varn coming out with the save he saw meadows so many offensive opportunities so far they're just looking to get an open shot out in front to finally bury one throwing from biggins evans quickly contested bates tries to find more more no but it's stolen by lombard and here comes hallahan again one-on-one with patrick stevens cuts inside he's got some options fires it to the middle looking for dave steffen and just behind him now east long metal has got some momentum going the other way mazda's going to switch it out sir run outside himself and touched out by westwood and it's gonna should be they're gonna say it's a goal kick but it looked like it was tipped out of bounds off of westwood that should have been a corner kick i can't imagine that mazzle would have just booted that out of bounds there it looked a lot like a westwood foot sent that one out fortunately the referee's eyes saw something different barnaran a c clear luke mazza and day stefan out of bounds off of dave steffen islam that'll throw in a quick one from monroe sonny mazza is a one on two and he gets a little too much on that ball sends it out of bounds that time it was definitely off of him that one it was that time yes just over two minutes remaining in this first half and it is still a one to nothing game and they're saying they're looking for a whistle looked like roberts was taken down back towards the 18.

never made it home whether they were prisoners of war or missing in action every object set at the table represents a different aspect of the soldiers difficulties hello my name is ishika nanavady and i'm one of the officers of brave first the table is round to symbolize the undying commitment and concern for finding our fallen and missing soldiers the tablecloth is white to symbolize the soldier's pure motives when responding to the call of duty a single red rose was placed in the vase as a reminder of the families and friends who continue to keep faith in finding these soldiers the vase is tied with a red ribbon to show continued memory of those who are no longer with us and the search for those who are still missing the yellow candle represents the endless hope for cheerful reunion with those yet accounted for and reflects our ongoing desire for their return we are reminded of the bitter fate of those captured and missing by the lemon slice on the plate the plate is sprinkled with salt to exemplify the tears shed by the missing and their families the napkin is black as a reminder of the confinement deprivation and the brutal fate of those soldiers the inverted glass stands to remind us of those who are not able to be here with us and lastly the chair is empty and tilted and will remain empty and tilted until all of our missing are accounted for on this veterans day as you know the october 1 collection the state collection is integral in the types of grants that we receive and so that is what we go by for our number you should know that we have ongoing enrollment our registration center is still very active we're receiving receiving students daily as of today our number is 11 960. so that is the change within just over a month and we have about 100 students who are pending in process of completing their paperwork so we certainly will will reach the 12 000 threshold very shortly and that doesn't take into account necessarily the influx that we often see in the january months the january month and winter months one thing to note i i think is an interesting fact that we need to kind of keep we talked a little bit about the ell percentage at the case high level which directly impacts construction but also at january high school the count for students that are identified as multi-language learners is 692 this year just in 2018-19 which was really our last tested year before this past year we only had 434 so it's a drastic increase to the amount of students that we're servicing at the high school level in addition our kindergarten number which is broken out on a different side or i could provide as a follow-up but it is currently 935 compared to our 820 is last year so certainly some folks have held their kindergartener from greater than pandemic here they've enrolled as a kindergartener and some have enrolled as first graders so that's that number kind of has increased in both and interspersive possible grade levels um to know also this account but if you look at it from a percentage perspective um our our fan our students who identify as hispanic or latino um is up to 60 of our student body and that's a center percentage point increase from last year hello okay just to make it a little more readable for you for you all this is kind of our pre-k broken out we don't identify students as english language learners until they hit kindergarten that's why that's not on this slide um and certainly we have our special education preschool classrooms which are the reason why those numbers are when we're looking at the k5 this is our account and what we're looking at across all schools just so you can there's some level of comparability to no particular schools of um morris street park south street and eis all of their elo populations are above of their school students 612.

um they got here really quickly i was pleased they checked all sources of gas around the cafeteria around that area the smell was coming from one pile of light and a commercial range in the kitchen this is a range that has six burners and we believe we don't know this for a fact with the pile of lightning up because there's a hood fan right above it an ansel system and a hood fan so it had been emitting gas into the cafeteria kitchen and we got the gentleman from southwest gas he checked every appliance in the kitchen in the cafeteria that used gasoline used natural gas there were no leaks there were no leaks on the unit outside so he determined that it was safe they declared the buildings could be reoccupied approximately 10 15. um the cafeteria staff returned at that time the menu couldn't be done because there was we didn't have time to pay that time but we had several boxes of pizza so the lunch today uh instead of whatever was on the menu became pizza and salad and something else and so um they were still able to provide i was impressed with i was impressed with everybody i was really pleased that um detective or sron literally he was there in a minute and three other officers including a sergeant arrived less than five uh fire department was there quickly and uh southwest gas was there half hour before they thought they would be and cafeterias hustled and kept things going so it was destructive but uh it was safe we didn't want to take a chance of having any students hurt but i want to reiterate that we follow the direction to the fire department and the sheriff's department for student safety and that concludes my report thank you um may i have a motion to accept the consent agenda i'll do it a second one second mr duncan aye mr guthrie aye ms hi all right moving on to the business side the first order of business is the miranda memorandum of understanding when the child parent centers head start dr dooley do you want to say a few little this is something that we do annually um child head start is not an envelope program it's a program in a hub it's not a part of the all unified school district they use our campus and they provide service to students that will be in our school every every head start program has a non-profit agency that functions as their support or their supervisors the american counties catholic social services in pima county's child parent center we received a memorandum of understanding that's between two non-profit governmental agencies quasi governmental agencies about a week ago a week and a half ago i took a look at i thought it would find we always have our attorney proofread that mr hufford our attorney approved it and we sound off our beliefs tomorrow friday friday so i recommend approval that because i'd like to see the program continue for young people in that hedgehog program do i hear a motion uh to approve the yamaha years okay uh the next daughter of business is second reading approval of the governing board policy due to a recent ruling in america maricopa's county superior court judge kathleen catherine cooper that that parts of the house bill 2898 was unconstitutional and void policy services has determined that districts and charter schools may rescind policy advisory 700 if adopted or if not yet adopted eliminate that this pa from the governing board or governing board consideration although the ruling came from america america maricopa county judge it is legally affected throughout the state and we really don't have to do much about that because we have already got that straightened out at a previous meeting but today we'll be working on g ch professional support staff orientation and training and ibm teaching about controversial sensitive issues may i hear i have a i have a just one comment for our dvd vr and then the two associated uh the only thing to me it looks good makes sense um but if it could read inside any uh district facility at indoor district events instead of the event we uh oh may i hear a motion to adopt those qualities please still move and all second mr aye mr president i'm mr governor hi miss duncan aye motion passes four to zero and the last order of business is amendment of the asba bylaws by the aspen school board uh the board um to summarize the the board of aspa wants to add an additional seat because now the one seat is shared by the hispanic community for two years and then they switch over and then that the native american does it for two years and then they go back and forth and the black alliance has the seat on the board which just goes along for the whole year so they hope to put in another seat so now that the hispanic [Music] representatives can be there forever and the native americans can also be there for the time 160 school districts have already answered yes so we just want to do it and they i got another letter from heidi david over last night that she's wondering where our vote is but doesn't have to be until december but i guess they're just anxious to get it going so do i hear a motion that we approve um i'll second it thank you miss and thank you um when we will do that i mean i want to see an agenda item we can discuss it and approve it and i'll leave it that for now but my last life will either open at that time during that agenda if we come to a decision on that that we can nominate officers in december then they can be decided upon um at the first meeting in january that we have a 30-day window bro good morning to that at that meeting i i have some items to find today we're supposed to receive the paperwork for the evaluation that's the november 10th of every year anything i i haven't been doing that one that's valid i'm looking at a date here before you messed up and see the phone well yeah making my head a little worse today so we're going to return today and i will add to that that i hope this year people get it in on tandy because that was part of the problem last year and that i know you did mr robertson i did but there were big gaps that people didn't get it in until even the end of january so i asked it so so yeah so the the paperwork i mean i am asking for a meeting eventually yeah right now um and additionally i would like an agenda item on the policies of the ebda and bdb can you say that again i'll show you one a b b a those are the ones about agenda items as well as this one's here bhc for communications with staff members and i also would like to have another discussion on esther sideline referee saw something and he's going to communicate with the field ref it looks like there might have been a holder something and a yellow was that a yellow card chad and it looks like a yellow card was handed out to sonny mazza was it it was yup so sonny mazzles off the field now gonna take a breather you know brunel will come in it's tough for his son meadow and now sonny mazza has to be careful for the rest of this game as i believe it might be a one-game suspension if you get a red no yeah something i don't have something like that so he can't get another yellow because two yellows will combine for a red card and you saw metal coach wants an explanation here and so does westwood's coach roberts will be taking the free kick lots of confusion going on here roberts a big boot up to hallahan halhan chests it down today stefan dave steffen across the middle is blocked day stefan again contested by luke mazza mazzo wins that battle but then ball stolen off of his foot by vamenta ben biggins nice touch pass out wide to bates now to monroe on the sideline inside to evans evans chase dante bates chases it down on the sideline across into the middle and it's deflected out of bound or cleared out of bounds by elias a great defensive play by him to prevent the corner dante bates will now set up he has a bomb a huge throw in from bates finds evans inside and evans [Applause] as i said dante bates has an absolute bomb for that throwing he's been known all year to take that spot and he's able to put it right to the middle for an opportunity for a head ball a great play we've seen that a couple times this year already from dante bates he's got a huge throw in and he just sends it all the way inside of that box near that goal where all that congestion is and they're ma uh evans is able to get a clean head on it absolutely perfect placement there perfect and post it in i mean that's the toughest shot for any goalie to save so a great play there and east long metal is able to tie this game up 1-1 with 52 seconds left remaining in the first half that's huge to go into the half tied freestyle meta you don't want to go into the second half down a goal so that resets this game here now and puts it the two teams even a huge confidence boost for east longmeadow they needed it could see the frustration was starting to arise but they're able to control it and bury one just before the end of this first half that first goal has been important for this team all season i mean as we as we saw against southward or sorry not south like ludlow in the western mass finals they began to get frustrated after not being able to bury that first one so that's huge freebie salmetto good response before going into halftime and westwood player was taken down on the play a free kick six seconds remaining and that'll do it for the first half we are tied 1-1 in the game of 16 for the state tournament division two boys soccer chad i mean i would say honestly pretty even so far uh back and forth offensively it's been a battle of the goalies like i was talking about earlier in the game obviously giroux um you know try to come out and uh block off hallahan and you know hallahan was able to beat him to that ball but uh so far back and forth offensively both teams playing well um and you know varn nothing really he could could have done on that head ball from evans there yeah perfect placement it's perfect so uh definitely going to be watching the goalies in the second half chad absolutely and i'm this second half i'm definitely going to be watching halahan again he's have has some crazy speed as a first striker and he's been able to get past some defenders pretty pretty handily so far so he saw metal has to keep an eye on him and isomora's just got to play as a team coming into the second half they've got some talented players i mean the number one ranked team for division two soccer for boys yep and and i islamido's offense looks like so far from what i've seen in the first half a lot of playing out wide to the sidelines to either luke mazza or mike monroe on the right side and to the left side more no and evans a lot of out wide switching fields which is good to see keep the defense on their toes doesn't let them relax gets the goalie to move side to side too and perhaps opens up a spot yep and obviously one one going in the second half is is so huge because you don't want to you know obviously halftime's good to you know readjust get your headspace back but islam metal just being able to bury that after being gold deprived in the western mass game it's got to feel great right now going into the second half so we will we will be back with you in about seven and a half minutes for the second half of this soccer game spartans are tied with westwood one to one we'll see in a bit welcome back to east long metal high school we are starting the second half of this game of 16 between the westwood wolverines and your east longmeadow spartans and kick off a little bit of confusion again between the ref and the players we're coming off a goal from esau meadow with just 52 seconds remaining in these first half scored by colin evans off of throwing by dante bates and now we'll start up and the goal from for westwood uh was scored by halahan and giroud tried to just kind of contest them and uh obviously hallihan got a quick touch around giroud and unfortunate you know events uh quick walk-in goal for him so this game is tied 1-1 but a great goal from east long metal late in the first half to tie this one up and for those of you just joining us now i'm brady dolbeck alongside chad o'brien east long medal with the ball now cleared back to pachetto the shadow out wide to biggins begins a chip up to morneau sent out by zuthen and then sent out of bounds off of westwood jacob pachetta with the throw in sonny mazza battling in the middle it's cleared out to biggens begins a nice easy pass to mourn mourinho back to enzo mazza mazza a little bit of pressure there from halahan on him o'brien with the ball now a cut move past mazza and he falls down he had a lot of running room a big break there from east loma brunel with the ball now westwood had numbers there and that was an unfortunate fall to take morneau sends it out wide luke mazza racing up the sideline and it's cleared out of bounds by roberts yeah definitely that play could have been very costly hallahan you could see started to get his jets moving you know those those engines were turning you know he was ready for that through ball from o'brien we've already seen it once tonight zoothin wang with it now evan's trying to get a shot on that it's blocked and o'brien comes all the way back to the 18 and clears it out of bounds ryan brunell with the throw in excuse me benjamin biggins with the thrombin now he sends it inside evans let's go over his head more no pass back to sonny mazza mazzle with a quick shot on that and on scoop save with varneran barnaran rolls it out to elias and elias literally just takes brunel and throws him to the ground a very dirty play and ref a no call unbelievable and brunel is now going to receive a yellow card definitely exchanged some words with the referee but brunel a full-on bear hug from elias and thrown to the ground very unnecessary play there tough but you got to keep your words in check it's often the retaliation that's called these games as the initial call is not seen so you got to keep your mouth in check here now moreno will set up for a corner kick he'll push his team back a low cross booted out of bounds but i think that's wang excuse me lombard and a throw in sonny mazza lombard heads it out ends up on more nose foot moreno tries to get a shot on then varnery an easy save for him hill punted up to midfield looking for wang excuse me vamenta good hustle there by ben biggins to catch up to that and ball goes out of bounds off of vamenta ben biggins will be able to take this throw in so far two yellow cards for esau meadow which is and some uh both on valuable players yup absolutely definitely don't want to see brunel or mazza leave this game lombard in monroe fighting when lombard wins that battle bacon's in lombard now lombard pushes down biggins no call there and lombard tries to chip it up to o'brien you know biggins will steal that and clear it out reps are just letting them play so far this game day stefan back to roberts roberts into the middle the more no more no will head it to the sideline curtis and tries to chip it up to halahan stolen by mazza lombard a touch move inside in monroe they fight it out but goes off of lombard east longmeadow throwing lombard heads that ball out of bounds again another islamic throwing for biggins biggins taking his time to monroe monroe ball scratches just off the back of his head ends up on evan's foot evan tries to go to the corner to morneau it's cleared out by elias just under 35 minutes remaining in the second half back and forth between evans and biggins and they're unable to trap it down and make a play goes out of bounds throwing for westwood curtis he'll send it into the middle mourinho back to steven stevens a pass up to evans monroe trying to find mazza in the middle it's stolen by wang wang tries to send it up to halahan it's cleared out by stevens roberts his clear is blocked down by more no shadow inside to evans patrick stevens sends the ball out of bounds it's going to be a westwood throw in once again excuse me off sides on that play plus we're trying to abuse halhan speed there get pot get past that last defender enzo mazza o'brien sends it out wide today stefan day stefan using his speed races up the left sideline biggins contesting him forces day stefan to slow down a little bit and drop a gear day stefan tries to send it inside a great defensive play made from enzo mazza and east long meadow is working downfield the other way just around midfield monroe with the ball touch inside to sunny mazza mazza switches fields to morneau a lot on that pass mourinho has to chase it down and is able to keep it from going out of bounds a pass inside to evans evan's a through ball inside to mazzum as it blocks it down and a pullback cut move cut back inside sonny mazza sends the ball into the middle and varn with a diving stop what a move by mazza to get past that defender and get to the inside and he had an opportunity to cross it for a great scoring opportunity for you salmetto varneran's ball is blocked down by moreno biggins with the ball now biggins sends it into the middle the more no more no's got a little bit of pressure on him mazza out wide to monroe monroe a quick touch pass back to biggins biggins will send it cross flag to luke mazza and mazza's offsides a free kick now for westwood valmaron will be taking it he waits for his attackers to reset and east all meadows setting up for some subs it's bates president and brunel burnell coming back in after that yellow card and usually they take off for those three monroe luke mazza and karana we'll see how they go about that this time martin aaron stinger ends up on hallahan's foot and a through ball up to vamenta and a great defensive play made by mike monroe to put that ball out of bounds and they're gonna say it went off of a mental a great defensive play there for mike monroe able to win the battle with vamenta and force vamenta to put the ball out of bounds and east longmeadow throw-in for ben biggins fementa a head ball biggins is just going to clear it to midfield sonny mazza now one on five waits for some players to join him presnel steps up mazza sends it out wide to president president cross post to brunel and it goes off of his foot and uh a nice little sand wedge there from brunel goes way over the crossbar but a great look there from east long meadow joe president with an incredible pass able to finesse that around defenders and place it perfectly in brunel's feet and he just can't get behind it correctly and unfortunately it goes a little bit high but scoring opportunities like that there's bound to be one that goes in if they keep pouring those in 29 40 remaining in this second half and it's still a 1-1 game mazzo with the ball now a through ball to the corner flag to mazza mazza sly tackle he puts the ball out of bounds gonna be a goal kick for varn it seems that there's a sub being made and we'll see who he takes out head ball brunell back to pachetta o'brien fighting with kirana o'brien sends it up to halahan and they're going to say ball went out of bounds off of a nissan metal player would throw in on the far sideline and this wang is now replacing vamenta for westwood i believe i have not seen ben weldon out there tonight i know he has some sort of foot or ankle injury right now perhaps he's dealing with complications from that i know i know that he played through that in the western mass final but perhaps they will play somebody else's game i mean as they have obviously bigen's coming back tonight a big help there wang and presnel comes back to help defend wang and biggins president getting involved the two on one on wang biggins a great sly tackle to keep that ball from entering any dangerous zone mourinho clears it up to midfield colin evans sends it inside will switch fields to bates bates has got a lot of running room looks for his options and he'll look to brunel brunell gets around a couple defenders and gets a soft shot on that easy save for varn now the wolverines will set up for fun barnaran with a bomb punt farthest of the night and drew will look to send it the other way right back to him and drew the sky high punt ends up on wang's foot more no now and curtis will step up now here comes they steph dey stefan they stepping across into the middle morneau tries to get it out and o'brien goes over the back of dante bates and they're gonna call a penalty on eastlawn metal oh brian went over the back of bates and the ref is going to call a penalty on bates another questionable call on east once again that is inside the box but they will make them take the kick from the location of the penalty there's just over 26 minutes remaining in the second half it is still a one-to-one game if you're just joining us jeru looking to make a huge save here this could be the go-ahead goal and the momentum westwood needs to continue just to dominate the game he's gonna head to east long meadow but east law metal looking to make up huge save here you saw metal looks like setting up a little bit of a trick play or possibly trying to block anything that goes between oh yeah shot being taken and blocked by patrick stevens they broke the wall and a great play from patrick stevens wow what a play that is one way to do it more no sends it out wide looking for presnel wang touch it around presnel to o'brien o'brien makes his way into the middle dante bates contests him o'brien will try to find dave steffen towards the corner flag but ball is stolen brunell and o'brien battling it out around the midfield you know brunel is going to win that one dante bates out wide to biggins big into the sideline to presnel fresno a cup move inside goes off of curtis east long metal throwing for biggins biggins sends it off for the head of sonny mazza and it's gonna go out of bounds a westwood throw in now for curtis just around 24 and a half minutes remaining in the second half of this round of 16 game of the state tournament biggins tries to send through ball bates and lombard bates gets a little bit of help from mazza and forces lombard to kick it out of bounds east long metal throwing in westwood's defensive zone dante bates got a big throw in looking to use it here sends it into the middle and curtis is gonna send that ball up to o'brien and o'brien tries to get a pass but rolls over the ball and falls down o'brien once again tripping over the ball on an opportunity for westwood i know that he did that earlier when they had numbers colin evans on the outside now ball sent out of bounds 23 and a half minutes remaining in the second half roberts with the throwing looks like we'll have luke mazza entering the game on the next whistle roberts with the throwing mezzo will probably take out brunel i think oh no biggins all right so they're putting luke mazza on right back and jacob paschetto slides over to the opposite side he'll be replacing biggins over there on the left back maybe trying to use maz's speed back there against uh what's his name halahan that's my best guess mazza a throw into more nose foot mourinho to bait speeds will switch fields to paschetta pachetto inside to mazza mazza tries to find evans can't do enzo mazza now sends it all the way to the flag joe president with a nice scissors move he'll cross it inside but nobody's home and it's cleared out colin evans now touches it back to bates and bates will send it over the crossbar goal kick for varnaren there's a sub being made on the play i didn't catch who went in but it is number two ben o'brien coming out barnard now sets up barn aaron right off of the face of dante bates ends right up on president's foot presnell a one on two forces wang to kick it out of bounds curtis wants a westwood throwing but that ain't happening east longmeadow throwing for dante bates now now bates from a spot a huge throw in from bates brunel with the head ball ping-pong in the air pachetta now luke mazza gets beat but he chases down dave stephan de stefan able to kind of chip it up but it's cleared by stevens brunel with the ball now midfield fresnel a through ball and all of the westwood defenders let that one go through and bar naren comes out and scoops it up and a low stinging punt from varn up to halahan off of his chest switch fields to wang pachetta and wang chasing down that cross machete doing a great job of blocking wang and now some subs are coming in it's amman karana and michael monroe and they are taking out dante bates and joe presnell the shadow big throwing and mazza goes over the back of lombard and hits the ball out of bounds westwood throwing for curtis just under 20 minutes remaining in the second half of this game still one to one score curtis right to evan's foot excuse me sonny mazza sonny mazza races up the right side and he chases down dave stefan and a little body contact there unfortunately no card will be called on him i believe he's one of them that already has a card i believe so sonny mazza i believe does have a card so far this game and zuthen sends it inside dave steffen scissors move working against luke mazza he's assisted by kirana and ball goes out of bounds off of dave steffen goal kick for ben giroux giroux to kirana off the back of his head moreno a head ball now his back of his legs are taken out by vamenta and that ball goes out of bounds off of a west wood defender off of clear jacob paschetto with the throwing goes underneath fimenta's kick ends up on karana's foot corona back to mourinho moreno to evans evans to brunel brunell inside looking for corona again ball's cleared back out to vamenta and mazza and vimenta collide and mazz is going to get the the uh break there east long metal free kick enzo mazda will be taking it now a chip shot but var naren's there and he's going to roll it up westwood with some speed going the other way day stefan cuts inside chased down by luke mazza mazza still andre stefan played back to lombard and stolen by mazza mazza out wide to monroe curtis steps up on monroe and steals that ball trying to look back inside to vimenta and karana takes that ball stevens to the sideline brunel evans creating some space for himself finding enzo mazza mazza cup move outside towards the sideline shielding off vamenta mazza now getting through three defenders across inside looking for evans and evans can't get a clean foot on it now luke mazza he'll get a light shot on that and varn makes a save but not without a little bit of fear and pressure placed on by colin evans a boston sports check-in tonight we have the boston celtics first the toronto rap there's an early season nba basketball game that should be a big one and right now there's 16 16 remaining in this round of 16 game for the east saw meadow spartans versus the westwood wolverines it is currently one to one if you're just joining us in the second half luke mazza throwing sends it in the middle and zoothin's there kirana and vamenta battling hallahan and stevens stevens comes up nice chest down play there and he'll send a through ball to mike monroe a little too much on it monroe has to chase it down on the sideline prevents it from going out colin evans a cut back move inside he'll cross it far post looking for brunel and bruno tries to get a foot on it just misses ball trickles to the side and goes out of bounds on the goal line a goal kick for varn another great opportunity there for east long meadow one is bound to go in soon you can't get much better than that for that cross put it right to him and he's just got to finish it next time and now a sub made for westwood wolverines ben o'brien will be replacing kiernan wang fementa sends it up to halahan hallahan is contested by mazza mazza says there's a deflection off of halahan but reps aren't giving him giving it to him that time westwood throwing also looks like we have a new face in for westwood kieran o'leary is now up top with halahan and he saw metal preparing for some subs of their own joe presnell and dante beats lining up at half field to go in mazza now steals from vamenta munro an easy pass to evans evans touch back to pachettel shadow sends it up to mazza mazza tries to get a one-touch pass to mike monroe in the overlap a little too much on that one goes out of bounds throwing for curtis curtis throws it to vimenta vamenta tries to chip it up goes off his shin not a lot on that momenta now cross over scissors move ends up on maz's foot mike monroe able to win that battle against vamenta tries to scorpion kick that one down just missed there paschetto now to more no more noah wide to brunel switch fields and o'brien sends it out wide to dave stefan they stephan back to roberts roberts up top to halahan playing to the middle to lombard lombardo high chip uptake nobody home possibly looking for o'leary and drew now the sky-high punt off of the back of o'brien's dome evans now with some numbers and momentum sends it out wide to brunel in the corner brunella cross looking for someone nobody home not quite high enough and verneron is able to scoop that one up no problem and he'll punt that one and now subs being made joe president and dante bates coming in for michael monroe and iman karana 12 18 remaining in the second half here still one to one luke mazza throwing more no in the middle more now wide to presnel sonny mazza switching fields quickly to brunel and and looks like they steffen and brunell got tangled up and de stefan went down brunel ending up on top and they're going to say a free kick there for westwood zuthen will be taking it zoothin sends it into the middle flamenta can't get to it o'brien to the corner looking for o'leary chased down by pachetto and it goes out of bounds goal kick for east longmeadow so far this second half has been fairly even islam has gotten a lot of good chances but i've yet to get a solid foot on the ball some great passes out to the front for a cross and they just haven't been able to bury it so far but if they keep putting some uh crosses like those then they're bound to get one soon and nissan meadows defense definitely starting to pick up wes woods offense yeah especially uh hallahan they've been able to keep up with him now i'm not sure if they place a different defender on him or if that defender is just giving him a little bit more space so he can keep on him yeah but whatever they're doing certainly starting to lock down hallahan a little bit more take away the use of his speed hallahan battling ball goes out of bounds east long metal throwing for jacob paschetto nice defensive play there from patrick stevens with the help of joe presnell thrown inside to bates bates shielding vamenta morneau chip up to evans nicely defended by lombard and now o'brien tries to split the d mazza a touch back to giroud drew will bomb it past midfield lombard sonny mazza sends it out wide to brunel brunell across into the middle and varn is there looking for colin evans barnaran able to step up there make a nice save callahan back to lombard labard a cup move inside dante bates all ball nice offensive play there esau metal making their way up field a through ball up to sonny mazza mazza shoots and it goes off the crossbar mazak goes for the chip shot on the outside as he saw the goalie's aggression and he was almost able to get by him what a shot and what a play by somebody and esometo is going to keep laying on the pressure now with a corner kick with the usual ryan morneau yeah looked like varnaren got a little bit of a hand on that one yup just able to he did i think i want to say hit the crossbar or the post now monroe sends a cross a head ball and varneran scoops it up varn whales it out to o'leary pachetta is able to get a foot on it and stop that momentum joe presnell and o'leary on the sideline kiernan wang setting up now for substitution mazza and curtis gets tangled up on the sideline and curtis will get that call he'll have a free kick eight minutes remaining in the second half score is one to one colin evans lombard and mourinho goes way up and goes into o'brien and o'brien goes down zoothin with the kick right to morneau pass up top to lombard lombard back in the direction of halahan hallahan is stopped by dante bates and bates clears it up to sonny mazza mazza being chased down by lombard able to shield the ball touch pass out wide to president on the sideline president and curtis go at it and they're going to say it's a westwood throwing off of presnel he's someone else oh no oh yeah looks like oh yeah out of bounds curtis trying to get away with a call there free kick but that's not happening some subs coming in wang replacing vamenta 6 30 remaining in this second half still one to one game and now the throne is being made and that'll immediately go out of bounds which will set up dante bates for the throwing dante bates with the throwing inside of the 18.

2021-11-11 Western Connecticut Planning Region, CT YouTube / hatters tv transcript source: youtube 11/10/21 Danbury Board of Education Meeting · passage 3
um this is kind of a breakout a little more typical than what we see but again an increase in percentage of our ell decrease of our premium research so what we move into first and kevin spoke to this administration spoke to this earlier around um what what we expected or didn't expect of the smarter balance assessment as you know we test students in grades um three through eight using the s back which is um what connecticut uses as a benchmark testing for students um it was it was not administered during the 1920s school year due to the pandemic and school closure or remote learning and it was administered remotely and in person during the 2021 school year both years have been waived as a part of the usde's waiver that connecticut sought to make it not tied to the accountability index so it is not tied to our district performance index our school performance index and those pieces but um they still are reporting out the results so one thing to just be super cautious about and the state really reiterates quite a bit is that these these test results should be taking the context of which they were taken so some students took it remotely some in person as far as the our district 68 were in person and 32 percent were remote the connecticut overall is at 88 in person and 12 remote so our numbers are slightly higher but that mimics what our our remote student population looked like um let's see so we'll just jump right into it um our students overall as a what the state refers to as the instructional learning model for the year so that means the way that students attended were they mostly in person were they considered hybrid or they considered mostly vermont danbury public school district was considered mostly remote because the amount of membership days that students were promoted so even though we know we switched to hybrid in most places mid-year when you look at the number of days the percentage of students spent remotely that's why it's reported out that way so one of the things that um we saw at the elementary level this particular data is not cohorted so this means how did third grade do um on in 2017 18 18 19 and then 20-21 obviously it's not reported out for 1920 so it skips a year um so in general you can see that our we were pretty stable for a couple years of where we were with our outcomes but in general around a 20 percentage point decreased at elementary level for the achievement um now this isn't covered overlooked so this is just how our third grade typically performs in the achievement um let's see so another case to consider is that this state overall did not see a significant change in results from students who took it remotely and or in person in ela except for the third grade and we saw the same trend students who actually took it remotely scored higher um and so one of the the things that they're considering is the moment of the test and or was it really one straight achievement they're doing more research about them so we moved to six eight there was not a significant drop at the elementary level but sixth grade um with the lower grade level we saw a more significant drop but um you know at in the eighth grade only five point four percent is dropping again those those scores particularly eighth grade hover around the same place over time now this is a rough cohort so this is like how particular not a direct student match but how students on that grade level performed as a rough cohort so that means that if you take those six that current sixth grade who took it in the spring that's the current sixth grade when they took it in 1819 and they were fourth graders at that point because they didn't take it as fifth graders and then how they performed as third graders so you could do more of a comparability of what the learning loss was possibly around achievement for that grade level as it relates to grade level standards um for this let's see so just remembering between the green and the blue that's a two year gap right so like they took it or by the time they took it again they they hadn't seen the test it was like their second year um okay so um never seen a proficiency for all tested grades this is by subgroup just a reminder it's on the previous or the full slide our high needs students which the state uses quite a bit to determine how students are doing um that have um that are either english language learners identified students with disabilities as well as free reduced lunch students so in that group you can meet all three students or you can you can be in all three categories or you could just be in one okay so um it's just considered a heidi group um and this is how students did um reported out not cohorted at all so just kind of how that's over time as a district as a whole um moving into math it was um also the csd reported out that across connecticut there was more significant loss in math so um when we're considering what our numbers look like um around between a 22 percent a drop up to a 31.52 back to a 25 we're really looking at there was the same trend that the state was seeing a more significant loss for the students in mathematics and that is grades three through five um also they saw more significant change and difference for students who took it remotely enough compared to students who took it in person again they're going to come back with some more research around that um so these students again in six to eight it was less of a loss but there's lower proficiency overall when you consider the years over time when we move to the rough cohort trend um we have uh okay so um similarly this is where we were obviously there was a dramatic um change in sex screen and and considered significant for their students when we consider how they did over time again that's a two-year gap from when they took the previous test and then um this is the subgroup piece so again this is students being tested at grade level standards for their particular grade but overall the district as an aggregate the the next assessment that was used or was administered in the spring was the next generation science standard we only had one previous year data um and that was in 1819 it was not administered in 1920 so the results of the two years are side by side noting that there's a gap in between it was interesting that grade eight with the same exact proficiency scores um uh between 1819 and 2021.

2021-11-11 Pinal County, AZ YouTube / J.O. Combs Unified School District transcript source: youtube J.O. Combs Regular Board Meeting 11/10/2021 · passage 4
today veterans day celebrates all those who have served honorably in the military whether in war peace whereas memorial day is more for the remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the services of the country we've asked veterans within our staff to come today so that we can least honor them and so i'd like to write read out some names and please have them come up as we honor our veterans jax struggle from harmon elementary air force michael holmberg from combs high school army carl hill from combs high school navy greg moyes from combs high school navy david nelson from combs high school army david nelson vincent jordan from combs high school air force and edwin boggs iii from transportation for marines um i know there are others in our district that served in the military and it is our chance to say thank you so once again thank you for your service and all you've done for us we really appreciate it and with that turn it over for the school recognition component so uh miss ridge yep come on down better okay members of the board dr wyman um there will never be enough time for me to have to be able to brag about combs middle school and all the great things that happen and we know that that's what you really like to do it's like your favorite thing to do it is my favorite thing to do and more so like tonight's the most inconvenient night for me to be presenting because i'm missing our first home wrestling match and a softball game so we need to work this out next year one of the things i moved to mrs ridge because she didn't want to go first [Laughter] okay i forgot about that so we have a lot of great things going on at combs middle school one of the things that i'm really proud of is our pbis program and i brought along mrs schindle decker our school social worker to kind of share some information about that because i try to keep this to a minimum and i will talk about combs middle school until you guys boo me off the stage so mrs schindler decker is going to talk about pbis did you want to talk first or show the video first is the video ready okay we're gonna show the video and then she's gonna follow up with some great information teachers recognize the student pbis is positive behavior intervention systems and support so we have school-wide expectations for students and when they follow those expectations and they're doing something good students our teachers recognize the students with points and they're able to accumulate those points and use them in our school store pbis my understanding is that it's a reward system you do something and then you get and then you save up points and from the points you get rewards from this cool store pbis is a point giving app and it gives points to people who are responsible and helpful in classrooms and lunch if you help others if you just are on task and doing great you can get pbis points or get rewards for it people helping other people with their classwork picking up trash and lunch and just being a good person like helping other people when they need help or asking if someone's lonely and need to talk like i did and basically like doing what the t basically like showing other students what if you knew what to do and they didn't i hold the door open if your class is like really loud and you're like raising your hand politely following the rules and um kind of just being a really kind person and i think i think this campus does really well like being kind and sharing throwing weird trash at lunch sharing with other people respecting people all students have an app on their phone if they downloaded it they're able to track how many points they have on that app and they come to the school store and buy things through pbis rewards so they come in on fridays look around in the store each each item is worth so many points and they cash those in for whatever they want they could buy yearbooks from last year backpacks notebooks colored pencils pretty much anything my favorite thing to get out of the store is stickers they have really cool stickers and they have like um these cool like some vintage stickers they have kind of stickers for everyone they have some vintage stickers some anime stickers and just cool things and i also like to get food yes there is a snack check but doing something kind and getting rewarded for it is much better than paying for a food my favorite item which i really want to get is the vr thingy so then i'm going to try motivating myself to help more people to get more points so i can get a vr thing so since we have implemented pbis on campus we've definitely seen a decrease in problem behaviors we're seeing more buy-in from the teachers we're seeing more buy-in from the students on what we want our school to look like i think it's really helped the campus a lot to like think outside of the box and to like think kind like being taking a second thought oh there's trash on my table you know what i want that bag of chips so i'm gonna pick it up i'm gonna put my ass point definitely help the kids out a lot so they have something to look forward to during school other than just classes and lunch and just being with friends i feel like it motivates people to like help others instead of like just being a bad person like maybe they'll be like oh well if i'm nice i'll get i can go get cheetos you know stuff like that and it creates friendly competition and i think that it's really good for this campus most of our students know what our expectation expectations are all of our teachers know what the expectations are and are able to reinforce what we want our students to act and do on our campus but with pbis points if you're kind and you do nice things you still get points and you still get rewarded for that it's just an add-on to an add-on i think it's really cool good evening my name is laurene schindelbecker i'm the school social worker over at combs middle school i could watch that video all day long it just brings joy so much to to me and to everybody at columbus middle school to see how engaged students are in our pbis program it really is just a foundational piece that we use to focus on social behavior so thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to share this program with you tonight our students did a beautiful job of sharing with you what pbis is essentially it is an opportunity for staff every staff to and students as well to share what the behavioral expectations are on campus so what would it look like for a student to enter into a classroom what does it look like for them to be in the library what is expected of them what should they be doing as well as what what they shouldn't be doing right and so then once students know those expectations our teachers and staff any staff members are giving points through our pbis app and so they're rewarding these points through a category and we focus on pause and each letter of pause stands for something we're looking for students to be protect productive accountable working together and successful and so anytime we see these things pro-social behaviors on campus any staff on campus can say thank you for and then we fill in the blank we're going to give you a point i just love this program as a social worker my focus really is on just well-being overall well-being of students and their safety and how they feel how do they feel when they enter campus are they feeling safe are they feeling appreciated are they feeling valued are they feeling as if they are students that are seen and heard and i believe just from my interactions with students in the pbis program that this program allows them to do that allows them to be seen allows them to be heard allows us to teach them what expected behavior is allows us to re-teach and re-teach again and through that build those very healthy relationships between staff and students and not only between staff and students but i see students holding each other accountable as well too hey you need to go pick that up i've seen students out at lunch lining up next to me and very dramatically putting their trash in the trash can waving around so that i can see and then that offers me an opportunity to say i appreciate you i see you i thank you for bringing what you bring to our campus um it's just such a good feeling to be appreciated just for be doing the right thing right for for being somebody who a person of character somebody who's making positive choices and it also allows us to we use this as um information too it's it's a data-driven evidence-based program so it allows us to when students are having a difficult time with behaviors to track those monitor those and put the appropriate systems and supports in place to help them with that to shape their behaviors so we love using this program over at our school you can see that the students love it we open the store every friday we alternate grades uh some of the things in the stores food and stickers and and use all those things but honestly i will leave you with this um it really it just builds such a community of positivity and a community for our staff and our students um to just notice each other and to respect each other and to reward each other for just being there showing up and doing their best every day and that's the kind of campus that we want to have so thank you very much for your time thank you for your time thank you for allowing us to share our program for you guys we can't wait till you can get up to the campus we're going to have some really awesome stuff when you when you come up to commerce middle school okay thank you thank you hey i got that vr thing thank you that's really nice so we did provide you with um some of the items that are in the pbis store who knew um for talkies and stickers kids would hold the door and work hard to be better middle school kids what ms schindledecker did not mention is we also give points to each other so laureen is a rock star she's really good at giving points now so you know these are like imaginary points she gave me a point the other day and when i check my email it notifies you and tells you that you have a point and that goes to feeling seen and being acknowledged because you would have thought she gave me 25 i literally was i got a pbis point somebody gave me a point and so um i saw her picking up trash and i was like i'm gonna give you a pbis point so that's something we do within staff too that it also motivates staff so i wanted to say that now moving on with the story miss schindledecker does not know by any stretch of the imagination that she's also here to be recognized as my person and so she had no clue and so um i have been very very very very lucky um with the people that i have on my team laureen i jokingly refer to her as my work wife because i can't imagine a day without her at work a day without her on my team i know you guys heard her speak she is as genuine as genuine comes she is the heartbeat of the campus she's the conscience of the campus and sometimes when i need to reset and refocus she's the center that brings me back to that and i believe in giving people flowers while they're alive and so i'm going to give you something and this is so ulring so this is a box it's a box of mindfulness and inside the box it's um like a hundred things to of mindful acts so every day you can pull one and then do one of these things at our campus and i'll give you a pbis point okay so here you go [Applause] this is way better okay so let me see who to go next i think i'll pick mr castrita because he um was nervous to be here and i'm he's probably over there like please don't even look at me miss rich but victor castrita is my middle school spanish teacher he teaches intro spanish he also teaches spanish one that students can take in eighth grade and get high school credit victor was the very first person that i hired when i became principal of combs middle school so this whole moment is sentimental to me i traveled up to nau it was my first hr trip dr duplis trusted me to go on and so it was snowing and victor came in and right away i knew i had to have him on my campus he was nervous he was shy he was young you're still young and we referred to him on campus and don't kill me victor as our baby bird and so to see victor go from where he was four years ago to now it was a no-brainer that he was going to be the teacher that i wanted to have here tonight and so that you know miss reinish who just retired from us last year she doesn't also like attention she came all the way down from chandler tonight i haven't seen her since last year to come and support victor in this night she was his mentor and so i called her up and told her that i had selected victor and could she come and surprise him she didn't think 10 seconds and so miss reinish is here and so this whole night is really special on more than one level so come on up victor i wasn't really sure what to get you so in my head i thought man you make spanish pop and so i thought well we'll get it popping victor [Applause] and just a little side note on victor he's done such a great job he brings food trucks to our campus with papoosas and what else victor what else have we had anyways he's had food trucks come we just celebrated dios dios de los muertos he just brings a lot of culture to our campus that otherwise kids wouldn't be exposed to and he also started a spanish club okay now i asked dorsey for a job description of what coaches do and i wanted to just kind of think about what it is that coaches do brady come on up brady's my next person mr mr thorpe is my academic coach and so when i thought about like what's his actual job description none of those things are the things why he's my person tonight brady's my person tonight because brady shows up to lunch duty every day and helps us with lunch duty brady's the first one when i have a sub or a new teacher that goes in and makes sure that they're good read and ready and set to go brady when a teacher is out goes in and covers and not to my face ever shows me attitude about it like brady has just been it's all the things that he does as not being an academic coach is why i have him up here today and it was a no-brainer that he was my person that i wanted to pick that was outside of a teaching role because brady you really do matter at our campus i know sometimes you feel invisible because you don't have your own class but you are ours and we are lucky to have you so thank you [Applause] you guys are wondering what i got brady so because i pay attention and i know my people brady comes in every single day with quick trip and so i needed to secretly ask him like do you really go to quick trip or do you just pour your own drink and keep the cup and so he's like no i go every morning so that's why i asked you and so i got brady a gift card to quick trip so you can have a lot of trips on me [Applause] and that's all i have thanks [Applause] you can do it the student of the month my on sorry time no no okay next is item six public comments and i know we have one public comment and before i ask that person to come to the mic there is a page that i need to read and get into the record the board invites the viewpoints of citizens throughout the district and considers the responsible presentation of these viewpoints vital to the efficient operation of the district the board also recognizes responsibility for the proper governance of the schools and therefore the need to conduct its business in an orderly and efficient manner the board therefore establishes the following procedures to receive input from citizens of the district a any individual desiring to address the board shall complete a form request to address the board and give this form to the superintendent prior to the start of the board meeting b the board president shall be responsible for recognizing speakers maintaining proper order and adhering to a three-minute time limit questions requiring investigation shall be referred to the superintendent or district administration for a later report to the board questions or comments on matters that are currently under legal review will not receive a response letter c if considered necessary the president shall set a time limit on the length of the comment period in order to ensure that each individual has an opportunity to address the board the president may also set a time limit for individual speakers letter d personal attacks upon board members staff personnel or other persons in attendance or absent by individuals who address the board are discouraged policies ke keb kec and ked are provided by the board for disposition of legitimate complaints including those involving individuals upon conclusion of open call to the public individual members of the board may respond to any criticism made by an individual who has addressed the board the board is aware that there are many issues in our country that are polarized and are highly emotional for many people the board also recognizes that many of these issues can create a great deal of disagreement the expectation of the governing board and district is that everyone treats one another with respect that the speaker presents their points of view in a civil manner this is an opportunity to provide civil discourse on a very polarizing issue and you are reminded that you are expected to adhere to the expectations or the call of the public portion of the agenda may be halted so given all of that we have one person that would like to make a public comment and i asked sarah mckinney to please come up to the mic and i will be timing for three minutes um hi my name is sarah mckinney i came here tonight i've actually emailed all of the board members regarding this issue it is regarding the forced quarantining of healthy children i am a teacher in florence unified i know stephen ray also works for queen creek not one district in this entire community is forcing healthy children to stay home from school because they sit next to somebody or in class in other districts letters do go out close contact and parents like myself i'm a teacher as well i've actually spoke to you guys last year asking that we could be in person but with masks so i'm a very safe person my son has missed 14 days of school he has never failed a class in his entire life he has not been able to catch up because missing 14 days for a student on the spectrum it's very hard to get caught up our district does not provide full direct instruction when children are forced to be home i have spoke with numerous members of this community i spoke with a high school student that lives on my street she has been forced to miss 35 days of school she has not been sick um we have a family friend there at combs high school as well they are failing for classes they were quarantined for 28 days total so far since the school started now they have covet so now they're out when they are sick they missed all that instruction when they could have been in person they could have been given the option i am asking this board to please please please look at your policy no other schools are doing this in pinal county i have done my research i have spoke with pinal county health department i was advised that you are following the direction of pinal county health department canal health canal county health department the guidance that was from last year that was from november 2020. this is november 2021.

the next generation science standards assessment is only administered in 5th 8th and 11th grade um we saw a similar trend as the state and that test participation was much lower with our remote students compared to our in person um and and what mr walston talked about previously around the challenges of students who were in remote attendance and having to come in school and take it and and those pieces um you know or if you remotely proctored but it was much lower participation rates for those students and then the the levels which students performed at and account and percentage are on the left um finally the she as a requirement for an accountability next for our district and the high school um grade 11 um which had less participate in the sap school day that's connected to a requirement on just a couple facts about the s.a.t um it was we did not have an sat school day in 1920 but it but we did um administer it in person only in 2021 and um so there's just a little bit of information around benchmarks here one thing to consider so sometimes we you know there's a way of looking at it regarding um average means for and things like that but the way the state looks at it is how students are hitting particular benchmarks the state of connecticut to develop those benchmarks to say whether or not our student was hitting the proficiency level they actually did a study around students performance in college a freshman year of college and how those students scored or what grades they received c or better in their english and math courses to consider whether the benchmark was correlated in this point we use the benchmark to consider similarly to report out as we do this right so um in this case we saw a ten percent drop point for our whole group and just a three percent in our map and then you can see the difference in particular um groups and finally this is the place where we do have the direct side by side comparison i thought it was interesting to know although this data is public it's not reported out as a state so typically you'd be able to go on to ed site and they would have the data that you can look up in this case for expect as well as sat it's not reported out that way this year because they're being very careful to not compare um in-person testing remote testing different demographics and subgroups how what instructional learning model students are in so it's very specific the way you can make comparisons so guarantee that for you to be a very immense report um but they um so we try to go with a little more of a higher level level aggregate but this is our probably one of our best comparisons to say since we were considered fully or mostly remote during the 2021 school year how did our students do compared to the state so we don't have reporting features for the other two models but we had um for levels three and four which considered is at the benchmark for the sat we saw a similar trend of the state so they were at 48.8 we were at 40 their math was at 25.2 and we were at 19.4 so considering the instructional model being similar that students were mostly remote that's probably one of the better comparisons that we can say what our students did side by side with the state overall and just to considerations for outcomes and i just took the directives and the guidance they were giving us right and so we want to just make sure we're careful to give context to this data to consider the instructional model for the students what how they were learning were they in attendance in person were they in attendance remote and then how they tested certainly we're developing you know protocols and systems within our school district to address more formatively what students need as far as instruction as well as using iads and other forms of assessment like the dibbles and in other you know a lot of different places to see how we can support students considering their experience during the pandemic um and so some of those things are on the last slide and dr kazamaro can certainly speak to them as they a lot of them stem from the work with the um administrators and the principals thanks karen i just want to um the data this year in particular was quite intense to go through and make some comparisons but my care has been certainly a gift to us over the last couple years but in terms of analyzing this recent round of data um thank you very much um so the current ongoing market some of this we spoke about in the last board meeting or two in terms of our ability through esser to be able to purchase and acquire some programs and some resources that we haven't had in the past um so these are these are outlined here um you know when it comes to our k5 literacy um even prior to to the pandemic we had identified a need to really um increase the structured phonics uh in our you know elementary schools and so as a result we did research and selected the reader program that is slowly being implemented in terms of the development and the rollout of that we've been working hard on the intervention and the alignment if you remember we made a shift with adding student support specialists into every school so that there was a connection to tier and intervention to ensure that we bolstered those areas and at the same time we redesigned the coaching plan so we had coaches that were dedicated to coaching and student support specialists to work with students prior to that they were doing kind of both um and having you know it really spread quite thin with that and so we've redesigned that we think that that will yield some results over time of course the coaches are very critical to improving tier one instruction that prevents some of the things that turn up in interventions holes and gaps and so we have to balance both um and that has really been the plan of the of the attack everything else up there in terms of the math and literacy are really programmatic shifts um that we've made with the idea that our population is changing and so how do we select more universally designed materials to reach our populations of students so that we are making sure that we're purchasing resources and acquiring resources that have a high level of differentiation already embedded at the start um to help with the teachers and making those selections um and so we are also still you may even remember a few years ago we started departmentalizing uh in some areas that is still continuing uh even in this in this environment so we are um we tend to use some of the departmentalization to do a little bit of field testing and piloting of some new things and that has been successful um and and it works well in some schools based on the consistency of the makeup of the schools how many grade levels they have and sort of the um the makeup and of the grade level in general we've been tracking and monitoring how those who are doing departmentalization is going we'd like to get a little more time and data around that before we decide if that's something that we want to grow out across the district but the high schools you know there's a pretty big academy action plan uh in place for the next four years and so we we really believe as you know that that's something that's going to help increase engagement will help with our graduation rates it's going to help reduce graduates that are going to be uh career ready um when they exit um so that's that in itself is a is a grand plan um for which you know we're hoping that you know achievement follows um some of these some of these initiatives um humanities we're continuing with professional development we've been focusing on project-based learning over the last couple of years um grade level text and close reading so really raising the level of rigor but at the same time helping students staying with students to help them unpack complex texts i mentioned a little bit about the interventions these are not necessarily new the exception of the do the math and the sips programs that are up there and that's really just about deepening our understanding of interventions not just purchasing a program but knowing when to apply an intervention for the right time at the right moment as students need them so really getting better at diagnosing what the issue is and then prescribing the right academic course of treatment if you will when it comes to students we have had struggled with mathematics in the district for a while the best way to get to that is to get at the bottom from the bottom to the top so we're going to start with kindergarten and roll out what we believe will be a better aligned system for teaching mathematics and for developing having students understand those math teachers understand mathematical practices and then students really digging deep into understanding sort of the conceptual side of math that maybe will help with sort of this building the foundation across the k-12 continuum someone mentioned science tonight and one of the comments happy to report that we are very much rolling out the 3-5 science um again slow i mentioned that the last board meetings that we are working towards towards that and we're trying to really be sensitive to the needs of teachers and the time that's taken right now with students but that is very much still on the docket and we have lots of new and exciting units and supplies and experiments that kids will be diving into this year that have been great interim caravans were mentioned interim assessment blocks they just will explain about what those are and so these are smaller snippets of the uh assessment that we can have students take in smaller chunks and then deconstruct those problems with students once we get the results it's a little bit more of a formative use of assessment um before we get to sort of the bigger summative side right so how do we how can we break down some of these skill sets and help students understand how to attack some of the problems and how do we embed some of those skills a little bit more in our curriculum over time so we are also going slowly with that but math has been using those and we're looking to expand that into the on the literacy side um professional development election not that we've been doing election of math for about two years now um and we hope to the two worlds will meet so rolling back rolling up from k2 and backwards from six eight so that we have a whole continuum across um we've been working on geometry and all the uh algebra alignments and then melissa they do shout out to her she's doing a lot of great work with that and working with the teachers and then probably one of the larger shifts that we made is really switching the way that we approach esl in our district and making sure that it's a systemic eld english language development across the school day and and really concentrating on what those services look like to make sure that we're delivering highly efficiently targeted uh uh curriculum to to our second language learners uh we've bolstered down on our newcomers program that's a program that was a pilot a few years ago has now become sort of standard when our newcomers come in that there's a specific curriculum that's special for them um as really kind of entry-level um separating them and making sure that that they have that they have different needs than a student who's been here for a year or so who was acquired much more we work on health standards inside of coaching health standards are really to help teachers guide teachers on what's appropriate for an esl student in particular classes science coaching are the strategies that we use with our esl students that are great for all kids but critical for being for esl students and of course continuing working on the alignment and doing a lot of monitoring and we'll be rolling up um the elg which is our eld program two six through eight so we just started putting together an action plan for that um you know again going slowly with a lot here um but but but still moving forward and um you know obviously you know the data tonight is uh you know we'll look at it and take you back a bit um especially when you're in my role uh we've been working hard to make very incremental improvements over the course and so over time you know our data looked better right now you know we take it very seriously there's a lot of work to do but we take the data in context and we continue with the plans that we've had in place and we work to kind of strengthen the and deepen those with our staff any questions are there any questions okay um i just want to ask i was looking at the rough cohort trend data for the ela pro you know versus the math and the drop-off to the math seems much more substantial i'm just wondering if you guys have any thoughts about why that is yeah you know um you know we looked at that as well um you know and it was definitely an ouch moment yeah when you see it um you know we've had some conversations about that math is math is really um day-to-day building right and so when you're when there are gaps in that things tend to fall maybe a little bit harder than literacy which tends to spire a little bit more to draw on as opposed to some tests of math but it's hard to say in this in particular um with this data it's hard to you know the context of when students take the test and um overall it is difficult to surmise um but something you know we haven't had our math data has not been terrific and so when you don't have a solid foundation to begin with you tend to become a little bit more volatile and vulnerable in those areas thank you yes mr janelle here and to takara to carry whichever camera was happening on your first schedule the district percentages and the enrollments the last comment in the future is it possible to just put comparisons for the totals of prior years maybe the last two years and then anybody wants to drill down to the differences and go into it sure and then my second question is the in the absence of 20 20 a year from now when you're looking at the data what's a good perspective to relate it to i mean the 21 year is sort of a conglomerate of a whole bunch of questions so you take it as you said with a lot of indian windows that created issues but if you have a let's say a normal year as we're hoping this year would be the how do you measure then success or failure against what years so i would say there's a couple different ways and and one of the pieces is the ibps that kara focused on earlier the smaller block assessments that are used in the classroom to really drill down and save students progress towards the standards so using that to supplement the data is very important the second piece is that typically the state reports out on the student's growth so and it's very specific if i scored a level one between a certain range of my scale score i'm expected to grow a certain amount of points they couldn't do that because we didn't take it last year but now there's going to be some level of comparability moving forward that's a lot of times around our schools of recognition that we've gotten schools of distinction highly recognized by the state by our growth of the student achievement i say that we're really going to have to look deeply at what the student's journey has been particularly related to their scale score and then how they grew within the past year so it's very specific they give us great targets around that so it helps us to really see yes there was a flip in data but this is how the student was growing before have they picked up on that growth again the state also this past year they they did not report at both scores due to the fact they didn't take it in 1920 but they did their own projections on what students looked like at the end of 1819 and then how they scored in 2021 and when you look at the state as an aggregate the lowest achievement levels did not grow as much and that's actually very atypical so we actually typically see those students growing the most and so we kind of really mimic that with the state's results so considering that that those students with lower proficiency levels didn't grow as much we need to take that into context and then see now that we're back in person are students trying to hit their growth targets again they may be at lower achievement levels but are they moving a full year's worth my final question would be then during the course of the current year are you able to then advise the board of any any any data or progress or let's say be positive progress we're making on these individual assessments and however you group them would it be done periodically whether it be quarterly or you have to wait one calendar per calendar year for one school year to to combine all those two to accumulate all that data and then put it into an assessment so we certainly have the only comparability to the large summative testing that's standardized is to wait a year right but we are doing other universal screeners and that's required by the state and for our alliance funding and other pieces and for just good informed instruction um that we that we could if i sit with dr casper and mr wilson around like what would be appropriate to report out to the board because we are doing um certainly the teachers are working hard and assessing students to see where they are to to meet their needs and then for planning purposes from a departmental level you have the dibbles we saw our administering star 6-12 but you know considering these are students who are coming back to school you know full-time in person for the first time there's some level of fatigue around what they're able to perform so just not asking too much and really wanting to sit with the instruction with the students for a while we're really trying to focus on those four-minute assessments too so certainly it is requested we've talked about testing reports that we're going to address later in the year around graduation college and career readiness if there's a mid-year report we can certainly speak to them okay thank you very much both of you thank you are there any other questions i i just wanted to ask cara and cara for some dr casamaro first um cara i believe in our last meeting you talked about the legislation around k5 literacy with the reading and just i guess my first wondering is for the board and for the public maybe make the connections to kind of our next steps around this work uh why it's so meaningful and and how this might help although it might not help us right now this year uh but why it's gonna be so important moving forward kind of landing on the right literacy readings program sure so so right now you know learn a little bit about you know we had started to do some small pilots this is some other curriculum uh that we thought was very standards-based um and and rigorous but but accessible that universal design that we spoke with earlier um and so we're going to continue to kind of pilot uh on a small side right now because going larger that makes a lot of sense right now to do that given everything that's going on but we're we're gonna hold a little bit um the intention is to to obviously to do uh a deepening of our k5 literacy program it has started with being a reader program which is really the foundational literacy component uh which you know prior to uh pandemic and all that when we had you know kind of the literacy committee and digging deep into some of the data realizing that we had some holes in our programming and we had some resources that were more than 15 years old with citizen components and spread out over time and maybe not necessarily you know well well folks were well versed in this so it started with uh making sure that we had a structured literacy program to begin with just which was the selection of the vegan reader program um but also how did you marry that with um with a rigorous you know comprehension program and rigorous other components to literacy that meets the needs of our learners and our learners have changed over time in terms of what their needs are and so the right to read legislation which i mentioned last time that we were here that group goes to group in harper that will be putting out a recommendation for reading free programs that districts will have to back into and so we're a little bit of a pause before we push any further on any material selection or gathering committees until that information is published at that time we'll gather our folks then we'll take a deep dive into um to our next steps in terms of our approach but we would like to definitely continue to improve what we're doing with the k5 literacy in particular especially around the fact that we have so many esl students and so many of our esl students percentage why start with us in you know in our lowest grades and so we really need to address address that work thank you and dr just just one more thing departmentalization and for the board members who may not be aware what that is and for our families at home that don't know what that is i know we've experienced some success with some of our schools can you just walk them through what that means sure so whereas a typical classroom teacher at the elementary school would teach all the components of a literacy program and teach science per se mathematics we do writing in the day if you have four teachers across a grade level then in in a departmentalization model you would have t students moving throughout the four teachers through the day who's one teacher focusing on the math one teacher focusing on um you know the reading one maybe potentially the writing or science um and so the in theory it allows the wellness theory but in practice it does well the teacher to concentrate a little bit more um in those areas and and focus and plan um it it also you know there's there's some there's some pros and cons to it one uh it's you know we'd like to make sure that teachers are kind of connecting material in an interdisciplinary way making those connections throughout the day it's a little bit harder for her to do when the kids are separate but at the same time students on the student side especially in fourth and fifth grade and only one school is doing in third grade um you know students get a chance to interact with other teachers sometimes slightly different expectations and things that they have to do they have to navigate for teachers which sort of tends to raise the level of independence a little bit more quickly at the elementary level and also they get to know more more of the teachers in this school there's a lot of benefits to it as well and so you know weirds where it's happening right now ais off street shelter that is you know they they like it and the teachers feel that it's beneficial and the kids seem to be responding well to it um the tricky part about it is that it doesn't it's not equal everywhere right so it's not something you just roll up and roll out without a lot of care planning because every school is different and this configuration across the grade level looks differently um so but that is happening and where it is happening and folks are quite pleased with it is moving still faster so um we had a school that was doing some looping um and so right when the pandemic took hold it was also at the time that the principle changed in that in that one location as well and so i think there are some some practices that they took that are good in terms of the full looping um you know that probably be the discussion in the spring about whether or not that's going to occur again thank you doctor sorry sorry my question and and thought as i look at the s.a.t data there's three groups that are very very low so i guess my question would be how do we at some point because if my understanding is right we're they're taking the sots and we're preparing these young people for college am i correct and those these numbers and these three particular groups are very very low so yeah and again improving tier 1 instruction across the district is the number one way to raise achievement for all students um and so you know that is a it's a continuation of our time students are taking those assessments and at the high school level um they have had our whole you know experience of curriculum so as we continue to make those improvements and work on that um the achievement levels of our students should rise rise we are there's a lot of alignment still a lot of alignment works but still left to do in terms of some of the skills that are on the sat and how we leave those in our preparations with curriculum and um but also you know we're in the process too with the fortune of the graduate of really reassessing what we're doing or teaching the courses we're providing um and the engagement just you know even just beyond the um the english language arts and the mathematics sides of things that are really you know meant to create a well-rounded student um so those you know that's all part of the improvement efforts and when you engage kids more in the curriculum all things rise as a result of that okay yes jeff um correct me from wrong sats were generally waived for students entering college fall 20 and fall 21.

the parents of this community want better i have wanted to pull my kids every day when this stuff has gone on but because of mr christrida tonight that was acknowledged he's the reason my son stayed at home's middle school when i wanted to pull him when i was given a close contact my son the second time he was given a close contact he sat on the bus for eight minutes eight minutes and he was not sick he's had kova before we are very cautious the families deserve to get an education and i you guys can do your research and you can look at the numbers i'm not saying that covet is not real but you need to give families an option you know when you're forcing kids miss 35 days of school or 28 days of school and they're healthy that's that it's just not logical and i think that i i'm upset because i've emailed this and emailed i'm sorry to cut you off but three minutes is up so thank you for addressing that so can it be brought to be discussed down the road we can't comment on that but thank you you're going to lose all your kids those numbers they're going to keep going down so maybe you should look at those numbers no appreciate no appreciate what you're saying thank you thank you thank you very much made great points thank you ms mckinney okay next on the agenda is item seven the consent agenda and there are many parts to it so does anyone have any questions or comments about any parts of the consent agenda no no no no all right then i'd like to entertain a motion to approve the consent agenda as presented i move to approve the consent agenda as presented second chad seconds thank you all in favor say aye aye aye it passes three to zero okay next next is item 8.1 discussion and consideration of approval of the j.o combs unified school district's parent teacher and or booster organizations for the current school year good evening members of the board dr wyman the remaining members of the audience action item 8.1 is for your reviewing consideration of the district's parent teacher and or booster club organizations for the 2021-2022 school year the governing board's record uh recognition of these parent support groups enables the district's insurance policy through the arizona school risk retention trust to include these in our coverage in consideration of coven the pto and the booster training continued through the video presentations that were made for the district and the completed applications for all of the locations have been uploaded for your review are there any questions no thank you all right then uh for item eight one uh someone could make a motion please yeah i moved to approve the j combs unified school district parent teacher and booster organizations for the 2021 2020 school year as presented second second second okay we have a motion in a second all in favor please say aye aye aye opposed no three to zero it passes item 8.2 discussion and consideration of approval of changes to policy ihaq career transition to work education the second reading so this is the same policy uh second reading we brought to you uh uh last month uh really it's just a request to reduce the number of hours for internships uh over the course of time school districts are finding out that the 120 hours is is prohibitive both for our kids in terms of missing time in school as well as for businesses trying to go ahead and provide an internship that long so many school districts in the area have moved down to 60 hours so i'd recommend approval as presented and if there's any questions i know mr scrogham's here and he can answer any any more additional questions if you have any it's always fun to make him say something but he's on a roll tonight isn't he any questions um no okay someone would make a motion please all right i moved to approve the change of policy ihaq has presented second second chat seconds all in favor aye aye stephen pass is three to zero item 8.3 discussion and consideration of approval of blackboard as the new website provider for the j.o combs unified school district dr wyman yes just real quickly last spring we looked at uh our contract with ed leo is up in its final year i was going into its final year last year and so we took a look at it and said uh there were some things that within the uh within the website that we felt we needed upgrade so we did an rfp to go ahead and get some vendors to take a look at uh possibly changing we had three vendors that sent it out to i think five and had three that responded we had a committee that met uh with each of the vendors the vendors made a presentation of what they had to present we finalized it down to two vendors and asked for best and final but in our conversations with those two vendors it became apparent that that our ability to make a shift to a new website transition all the data and all the information we had on the old website to a new website between april and july was unrealistic so we went ahead and pulled back as we reviewed it again in october of this year um and our discussion took place uh we felt that going back out for another rfp would get us exactly the same place we were before blackboard had been our number one choice um in the spring so we were looking to use the one gpa contract 2111 pv uh for the purchase of blackboard as our new website the website would not take place until july will start in july 1 of next year the reason we're doing it right now is then we can start the migration of all the information we're already starting to take a look at our websites working with the sites to make sure that everything that's on there is current is it something that we want to move over is it something we don't want to move over and then throughout the spring we'll have a process to actually make the full transition and then give or take uh it'll go live yeah july 1 but but we'll probably be working with a prototype of what it's going to look like throughout the late spring and early summer so i would recommend that we move forward uh with blackboard for uh for this product the pricing is essentially the same as what it was last year when we did the original rfp so i would move approval as presented questions about this proposal no no okay then i entertain a motion i move to approve blackboard as a provider of web for the website of the district beginning july 1st 2021 under one gpa contract for one year pretty simple second second stephen seconds all in favor please say aye aye no three to zero um item 8.4 new cost course approvals for the cte agroscience four curriculum you took too long getting up here sorry mr board president members of the board we bring to you tonight just one course offering we've worked with the both the high school teachers and with mr scrogham and cte and and we are only requesting one additional course that would be ct agriscience 4.

right so the preponderance of colleges did not record did we see a concomitant decline in perhaps preparation for the for the essay team in other words i might take it but i'm not going to prep for it i'm not going to take a study class i'm not going to take a review like what was going on were the psats the most pressing for sound and i'm sure there was a collective side across the 16 year old scope and 17 year olds of the landscape of knowing that the sats my graduating niece last spring was not upset that they were hard nevertheless it is an important indicator for college and career readiness and it's something that we do take take very seriously um and we'll continue to continue to stay focused on okay are there any other questions thank you carol thank you superintendent thank you miss cooper so one a b and c of the superintendent's report are really three quick updates for the board and also for the community so i'll start with west side academy lottery the the lottery opened for west side november 1st and closes on november 15th to date we've had a little over 1 000 families participate in the lottery so very excited about the participation thus far and and and hope will continue to have a rush through the weekend before it closes this is our first year opening up in the fall if our families are not aware and our board is not aware we were having challenges with scheduling having the lottery open in february and so we would continue to get feedback from our families throughout the spring oftentimes throughout the summer trying to nail down what academy families wanted to choose whether it was global studies or stem it made more sense for us to open up the lottery in the fall so we can solidify scheduling and the principals can go into the center and students and families can go into the summer knowing what academy they were in so we're very really excited and happy about that move uh and again we have over 1 000 families who have participated already how that compares to previous year's applications yes and so and so we we've had 12 to 1300 um the last time i had spoke to miss stanton so we we see these numbers being around the same um by november 15.

you were given a copy of the course description this just gives us some opportunity for growth as we've got a very new exciting teacher in there and we're starting to see growth in the program and this would be a great opportunity for our kids to continue on and become completers in this program so if you have any specific questions i want to refer to john but uh this is where we're at and again we've just brought the one course forward this year so this would be uh for the next academic year correct do we have any idea how many students might want to enroll in that yeah that's okay um here it may take a while to build a class being good makes sense thank you any other questions no i think it's great okay a motion please i move to approve the combs high school new course offerings for 21.22 second second so you see my seconds all in favor please say aye hi hi new passes three to nothing item 9.1 on the agenda the school district aggregate expenditure limit issue okay this is an issue that's uh come up here just recently uh you may or may have not heard of it we're just bringing it for information more than anything else in arizona you have a process called the aggregate spending limit or also aggregate expenditure limit ael and it's part of the state budget and it was established back in the late 70s early 80s when they created the funding formula that we have in arizona a couple things to be reminders of the in that funding formula special ed was just in its infancy especially was actually something that came about in this country in the late 60s so you had about a decade worth of special ed so did not have that did not have ell any number of different factors and so they set an aggregate limit however unlike towns and cities and towns and counties which have the same thing if you are up against the aggregate limit in the city you can go ahead and put on the ballot and by a boat of the public in your town or city you can go ahead and increase the limit by 10 percent for school districts they they put all school districts together and so it it has occurred before they had the raise limited i believe was about 86 and i think they had to do it in the 90s or maybe early 2000s uh feeling was we're not going to get to the limit again so everybody was comfortable well with the inclusion of the daa money that they finally paid us back with the inclusion of the 20 by 20 with the decrease last year of 50 000 kids on the pandemic out of the system and it's based on number of kids and enrollment factors we're up against the limit by law ade has to provide every school district what the estimated cut would be legislature has to raise the limit through a resolution by march 1st on the two-thirds vote and if it's not raised by march 1st then school districts must cut the percentage that's provided by april 1st um this number in november could change between now and then but it's going to be roughly in that ballpark and it's about a 70 percent cut conversations at the state level are such that there's been promises made by leadership both in the house and the senate that they would address this issue and they would address it as quickly as possible i have had i've been in a couple meetings with legislators i will tell you with 11 new legislators there i was meeting with one that's brand new and there don't understand what this is nor do they understand the significance of what will it mean i do think gonna bring it to your attention for a couple different reasons um our cut just so you're aware is is 5.3 mil i'm not sure what uh some of the other districts are but that's significant if you're cutting 16 17 percent of your budget in the last quarter when you're committed to salaries already it would be it would just have devastating impacts across the entire state um problematically is is there's probably going to be a one-year fix but there's not necessarily going to be a permanent fix because there's issues related to prop 208 invest in ed and some concerns with that so i bring this to your attention uh more than anything else just so you're aware of it if you hear about it uh you're probably gonna see quite a bit about it over the next three or four or five months as people try to lobby to make sure this gets addressed but even more so than that if it's not solved on an ongoing on a long-term basis then this in essence becomes very similar to the debt ceiling limit that happens at the federal government where we have a discussion every single year about whether we're going to fix this problem or not fix this problem and i think that's the bigger concern if we're looking to put more money into public education as has been anticipated then all of a sudden you're bumped up against this limit uh annually and therefore it's going to continue to be a problem so i just want to make aware of you the the attachment just provides the report that the every school district received from uh school finance at ade so that you can see uh if there's specific questions about that ms cook myself i'm more than happy to answer them but again this is just informational so you're aware of it we will obviously talk more about it as we get into february january and february after the session starts and see what's going on uh if we get it resolved for this year then there'll still be a push to get a more permanent fix but the problem is a permanent fix means there has to be a change to the constitution because this is a portion of the constitution so there are a few issues out there with it so again i'll be more than happy to answer any questions but just trying to bring it to you for knowledge more than anything else and then we'll address it in the future i do have a question on how the aggregate spending limit is calculated is it calculated on a statewide basis or each individual school district and then it's rolled up to a state number they get us they get a state number based on on what the projections are for all the school districts they exclude certain things so as an example bonds and overrides are excluded out of the dollar amounts and so once they've excluded everything they then take a look and say and and the projected amount earlier was 1.24 billion i think the final amount that they looked at at the state level was 1.15 billion they then based on that will then um come up with the number uh pro er against every single district in the in the state uh so if you if you have any number of situations especially like bonds and overrides you're not going to be impacted to the same degree as if you don't have those bonds and overrides so although it's uh on average 16.9 70 percent cut it does impact each and every school district differently depending on the uniqueness of um of where they sit with some of the things that are excluded or not excluded i don't know i can look up any school district in the state but i don't know the exact percentage amount uh but it's going to be that's why i use that 17 to 20 percent depending on the district you're in for us the projected amount is i think it was 16.9 percent so so in in general turns then every single school district public school district in the state is impacted there aren't any of that every every single traditional traditional public school district charters were not around in 1980 correct and so charter's not impacted by this at all so if we get if they were not to solve this problem on march 1st every traditional public school in arizona would have to cut like i say 70 off their budget the charter schools would have to cut zero thank you steve and chad other questions i know not about that no okay um thank you dr wyman item 10.1 request for future agenda items anybody oh question yes um so in regards to what um ms mckinnon uh asked us or talked to us about tonight is that something that has to be dealt with by the board or is that something that can be addressed outside of board meetings because it's more like a procedural thing not necessarily a policy thing yes and no it is a it is uh um it is part of our mitigation plan the american rescue plan requires the board to prove the mitigation plan so if we were to change the mitigation plan then we'd have to bring the mitigation plan to you to make that change i won't go into details given how you asked the question and and the way this was presented but information presented tonight was not totally accurate well i i can't understand that that's what are we gonna be able to talk about that a little bit more or when when would that discussion take place that'll be up to the board uh i can talk to you individually to see my only cautionary tale is is again as a reminder um very similar to the situations that we have had last year at the beginning of the year uh it is a polarizing situation and so there's not a good answer to this relative to how different people think and so the the question especially i'll just say it right here uh with this if if next december the december's board meeting is the same makeup of today's then it's a three-member vote that's doing it it's not a five-member vote uh and so you have to keep that in mind too that that this discussion is not going to be necessarily a total board action uh from my discussions with ms hargis she will not be back until january um uh we'll see with mrs carr i believe she may be back but i don't know if it's a four-member board then you have to be cautious of uh a lot of discussion to result in the two-two vote um so there's some pieces that that have to be there uh mr delano myself have talked about it um i have not bothered mrs hargis with a new situation but if if the board is directing me to do that then we'll have conversations over the next month to determine uh what's the best course of action well i think it'd be reasonable to discuss it and and to look at and i'd be happy to hear the other information that you have and um because if there's something that can make sense and be reasonable then i don't see why we can't look at that so are you suggesting you'd like to see it as an agenda item on the next board meeting um is that would that be the best place it seemed to me that this is more at first i thought it was more of a procedural thing not a policy thing but again if if you want to change the because in the mitigation plan it happened to say that we were going to follow right the county health department's recommendations right so because that's what we are indeed and for clarity we are following the county health departments right and she acknowledged that no no no we are following the current county health department requirements not previous county health requirements no i believe you i believe you i'm uh yeah so i just i where would we talk about this because if this is an issue that can be addressed sooner than january then maybe so there's a couple if we want to make a change to our policy to our mitigation plan it needs to be on the board agenda as an action item so that way it's out there so the public can see it and if and if they want to come in and make public comment they can't if we want to have it just as discussion item where we take no action and we just talk it through that's another option as well or we can choose to do nothing and all that can be decided before the next it doesn't have to be decided tonight does not have to be decided tonight we can talk to dr wyman over the next couple of weeks and hash that out yeah i'd like to that's right right it's good okay um anything else for requests for future agenda items no no no all right then i would like to move that we adjourn the meeting at 7 13.

great win from east longmeadow both teams playing a great game tonight obviously like we said earlier goalies both played a huge role tonight they battled it out trading fire it was it really was a dog fight between goalies they both played great games and fortunate enough for east long meadow they're able to come out on top tonight giroud made a small mistake in that first half which resulted in westwood's only goal but overall he was able to kind of readjust himself get it you know get his mental space back and able to come up with some huge saves to keep east longmeadow in the lead tonight and varn played a great game himself i mean the goals that went in there's not much he can do about those there really isn't first goal posting in no goalie can save that one and then sunny mazza a shot from 35 yards out and just a absolute rip catching varneran off guard and resulted in two goals so east long meadow will be heading to the elite eight i want to call it uh of this tournament the state tournament chad takeaways it was a great game to watch i mean credit to the wolverines and the spartans they're both competitive and i mean it's tough to see as a wolverine senior senior last game to go down like that but i give credit to everyone there it was a great team effort by the salmonella spartans some nice goals and it's just a good game to commentate yeah great game we had a lot of fun here so that that'll do it for this game of 16.

thank you thank you so citywide pto uh we have our next citywide pto on december 6th and at the last meeting i had shared with citywide pto that i had uh met with representatives from food services food services sodexo we had a very good meeting it was kind of a welcome to the new superintendency some folks from regional office came to speak to me it was a great meeting one of the things i asked for from this sodexo was to meet with our families and make sure our families have an opportunity to inform the development of a menu at our schools and so i'm expecting barry and a representative from sodexo at our next meeting on december 6th at that time they're going to walk families who are there that evening the process in which we can have a representatives from k5 and elementary so they can inform the development of the school menu the same will happen at the middle school my understanding is there is one at the high school but i want to make sure that's revisited as well and then we will figure out how to promote this to make sure we get participation from students and families and staff as well i heard concerns about the quality of our food in my short time as a superintendent and i just want to make sure that our kids and our families and quite frankly our staff have a say in the menu and i think that i'm hoping that might help inequality and just kind of you know the just the overall um happiness with the meals that are served every day so that that's certainly a good start i i hope for us um and i'm hoping it'll be also great participation for my families and and students as well and um c on the superintendent's report legislative agenda um just wanted to make the board aware i am planning to meet with ryan bingham next week our lobbyists on behalf of the city and the school district um brian will be working with us to put together a legislative agenda to address some of our initiatives one of them that has been on the agenda for the last two years and that is really knocking on the state's door again and asking them to accelerate the alliance payments to to our school district i think we have a pretty good story to tell and a pretty good case to make for that acceleration um you heard cara tonight given that enrollment update and it's not just about the enrollment itself but it's the the families that are coming across our registration camera um that makes us a little more unique than most of the states in the state of connecticut we have the highest percentage of ell learners in the state of connecticut and our needs are quite frankly uniquely different from other school districts so you know after speaking with ryan he felt pretty optimistic that hey maybe this could be the time politically we're going into an election year so that might also help us so we're going to strategize with him and have a draft of an agenda legislative agenda uh for the board to see for the city obviously they also play a role in uh and and you know hopefully we'll be a little luckier this time that we have been in the last couple of years so i'm looking forward and excited about this process d grant funded positions and reorganization so on monday evening at the finance meeting i shared with the finance committee committee and other members of the board we had an opportunity to attend i shared with them that we were looking to leverage some of the monies from our alliance our alliance grant to purchase position to bring in positions to support specifically our k5 schools across the district and that evening i had also shared we were looking to bring in [Music] positions to support support staff to support our four largest schools those schools under this allocation would receive 140 000 each our 10 elementary schools that not qualify as large i mean they're all large but our other 10 schools would receive 70 000 allocation of this plan in addition we would be looking at a plan where we would bring in four assistant principals at those elementary schools and i just want to walk the board and the community through this plan again so one we receive every year we receive and i don't want to take this for granted i'm appreciative of the fact that we receive an increase from alliance every year but it was approximately 2.5 million this year we had we budgeted for about one point i'm sorry about 700 000 of those monies for all the items that number one contractual obligations um contracts that are already in the alliance and other things that we had ordered or purchased but the 1.8 million was for staff that was still undecided we i appeal to the state and acts can we have some time to make some decisions on these positions so that we can better understand the impact of covet and the pandemic and now that our picture is a little clearer we've come up with a plan that we feel like is going to better serve our school district and so those support staff positions um the way we are planning this um the schools with 70 000 allocation 70 000 allocation 140 000 allocation we will come up with options for those schools we will certainly be working with them aside as if they can work independently of the school district um they will have three three three different positions that they'll be able to use to help support learning at their respective schools a position we call school climate specialist you might recall this position being proposed in a budget last year to help with lower level discipline issues in the building that do not rise to the level of suspension that other positioners are paraprofessionals who can push into classrooms and provide support and then the other position is student support specialist this position all three of these positions currently exist in a school district the student support specialist can push in this is a certified teacher who can push into classrooms and provide intervention support again this position currently exists at our k5 level so under this plan we'll be increasing it and having more academic support intervention support at the k5 level and then last but not least are the four assistant principals i know this has been something we've talked about quite a bit over the last couple of years what i shared in the finance meeting on monday mr roose i appreciate you asking this question about teachers and staff we on monday evening we we've hired close to 100 additional staff certified staff the majority of them being teachers close to 20 now at the high school and and continuing to climb mostly because of what carawanza reported this evening my enrollment has mostly hit the high school this year that's where we've seen the biggest the biggest bump this year and so as part of our asset 3 budget i believe we had budgeted 16 teachers at the high school and 15 elementary teachers across the system those were just teachers this is not including esl and ell staff this is not including special ed teachers this is not including social workers and guidance counselors and student support i'm sorry and not other pps staff we've we've hired many without increasing in any way our administrative staff across the district and so what what has happened we know that their the needs are greater than ever in our classrooms uh we need someone to be able to pick up the phone when a teacher calls um and and and the calls are coming more than ever uh across the schools and so the principals need help um but our staff needs help right so someone needs to be available uh when the teachers reach out so we're seeing this plan particularly starting with our biggest schools obviously park avenue is our biggest elementary school in the district they currently have an assistant principal but and i believe i was asked the question you know what was that magic number that we had recommended last year during the budgeting process in which a school would receive an assistant principal and i believe that number was 450 we have several schools a number of elementary schools over that number and so sadly rough and sadly rough and shelter rock are two of those schools that are certainly over that number [Applause] hayes town is at 417 and counting and given the special ed program at that building um highly recommending that that's also one of the schools and i believe ellsworth is the other school that is all over 450 and they'll probably be even higher than that next year when we open up those additional sections at the building so i am and then the fourth um assistant principal i'm strongly recommending that we have someone like i said we have someone at park avenue right now and if we can bring in four more then that would mean our three other biggest elementary schools get support and then under this model anyway perhaps we can have an assistant principal provide support and a number of buildings to provide the support quite functionally the builders need what we're finding and i don't think this comes as no surprise to everyone in this room um our high school this is not to suggest they don't need help but but dan has a compliment of assistant principals department heads uh two deans at his disposal um and he has a team we can also rely on um not to the same level of capacity but our middle school principals have also a team that they can rely on and our principles are on the highway they they immediately they have to go to kelly's support staff and count on social workers and school psychologists but meanwhile they have to provide their own related services in the building and they too are stretched just i just want to provide some rationale behind the decisions and so i just wanted to update the board and assure the board that financially we're okay because the alliance funds are reoccurring funds right and certainly we would prefer to have the alliance funds for programming and innovative things some of the things that you saw on the screen that carrick had presented previously and that and these things would come from operating budget but we we don't have the time to wait right now we need to provide support um so that we don't continue to see the data that was just displayed on the screen and then last but last but not least as i have a quick pause is talk about the reorganization um in the letter that i shared with the board a couple of days ago and so frequency previously i'm sorry and so just to summarize the positions and the monies uh where it's coming from the handout that i added to your packet at the end that just kind of summarizes where those monies are coming from but last but not least the reorganization in district office so one i i want to start by thanking the board members district office and principals and administrators who participated in the organizational study that was conducted i believe about a month now a month ago now we received feedback from the study and we received the report the report was prepared and emailed to the attention we shared the report with our administrators our president of the teachers union also participated in it i shared it with the nea obviously our dsa members participated and shared the report with them and i know that you also participated in the study and shared it with the board there were a couple of interesting very interesting things in the report um that i felt was that certainly informed our recommendations and in my recommendations that i would like to talk to you about this evening the the consultant strongly recommended and now this is the second study in a row um the first one was dr sal and prior to me being higher caribbean height and urban role a couple of other physicians being hired it was strongly recommended that the district have either a director of k5 and 612 or some position intentionally supervising the areas of k5612 and so we didn't have exactly that model applied prior to my arrival dr casimiro and i actually split the supervision and we kind of took half schools i took half schools and it i would just say our principles didn't get the support that they needed because we we too were already stretched just by design um in the second organization the most recent one that you have in front of you this evening this consultant group also strongly recommended intentionally someone supervising and supporting these areas however his recommendation is that there's an assistant superintendent of k5 and assistant superintendent of 612.

he also mentioned in his report that he felt like he understood um the the ramifications of that decision and recommendation but felt like aspirationally this is something that the district should be aspiring to be with that said i didn't feel like we were ready for an assistant superintendent k5 and 612 and and i'd like to walk you through more one i just want to start with um dr casimiro kelly truces who have been here a long time in very key critical conditions in the district um i felt like it was time to elevate both of these positions number one i don't want either of them to go anywhere let me just be clear right so this is a retention move selfishly to me two i think it's an investment that the district and the board should be making in both of these positions and elevating those roles so i'm just going to start there i i am happy to um increase their responsibilities to um to to to to to justify the elevation but quite frankly they've been operating as assistant superintendents in this district anyway particularly given their responsibility i went into this model favoring the idea of a chief chiefs across the system after the report i had to step back and begin to reassess my thought process given that the last two reports now are strongly recommended recommending supports intentionally for k5 and 612 instead of assistant superintendents at that level um we've decided i've decided along with with the cabinet and getting feedback from the report is to have a chief of schools k5 and so on that diagram in the circle you'll see a k5 to the left 612 to the right and then underneath on the bottom left hand corner you'll see a position called chief strategy and operations officer i'll talk you through that one in a second and then to the right of that document you'll see a physician chief finance officer our chief finance officer and executive director of the budget sitting at the table was up this evening very happy about their arrival just want to publish and say that again and then at the top of the diagram um is our chief talent officer in legal counsel to the board so this is the cabinet and we have three vacant positions that i am looking forward to um balancing out this team i also just want to talk to the board in the community quite frankly about uh the finances for these positions because i know whenever we talk about positions uh there's always monies associated with that and i totally understand and appreciate that um but i just want to walk to walk the board through and this is also in the powerpoint presentation on the last slide um and and and so there there are three things i just want to walk the board through and that's one we had a position called and i believe i called it curriculum administrator but it's actually district administrator k-5 that position was paid out of title 1 when i first arrived here 1819.
