Welcome to Discover Madison. My name is Sarah Speer, I'm the Governing Board President. I'm excited for you to have an opportunity to learn about each of our signature programs. I have been on the governing board for quite some time. I'm in the middle of my third term and I've also been a Madison parent for over 14 years. All three of my children have attended Madison schools. My youngest is still in the Madison district. I'm actually a graduate of Madison schools, and that's one of the reasons when I moved back to Phoenix from being away that we chose to live in Madison so that our children could attend Madison schools and have the same quality education that I was able to enjoy. Welcome and enjoy. Thank you.

preparing for board meetings and our board is especially good at attending professional development and improving their skills as a result of that our board was recognized by the illinois association of school boards for board governance and this adds to our growing list of recognition for that award and each board member will be awarded a we'll be awarded a pin for the recognition which i'll hand out to board members later tonight we also have a recognition of board member vasquez drexler for [Music] uh for uh let's see master board member for this year so thank you uh so much for your service member and graduate of south high i am very deeply honored to be here and to be a part of this these projects so thank you very much for your support um i can say as well as a graduate of south and both parents went to north this has been a privilege that maybe is the best in my career and it shows that when you worry about building and not about blaming you can save about a year and you can save about 20 percent that couldn't have been done without the leadership of this board and we are eternally grateful thank you very much and if we're allowed we have a little thing we'd like to give you so we'd like to present a um to hank and the board yeah absolutely well i just want to make sure everyone can hear us it's a picture of both north and south the final photography of each of the aye christopher espinoza aye shirelle fuller jenny hagstrom aye terry pavisage aye mike davenport aye nancy kupko aye the minutes are approved before we go into the reception of visitors do you have something you want to say dr feely no i heard i have a statement for this second okay so the meeting agenda includes two opportunities for comments from the audience this first reception of visitors is intended for audience members to address the board about any agenda item on which the board will vote the second reception of visitors is intended for audience members to address the board and any topic pertaining to community high school district 99 comments are going to be limited to three minutes to provide all visitors an equal opportunity to address the board individuals needing more time should submit their thoughts and writing to the board secretary mrs nydak visitors addressing the board need to submit a comment slipped to the board secretary and will be invited to the microphone prior to addressing the board audience members should state their full name the proceedings are being tape recorded for the purpose of producing accurate meeting minutes and they are being streamed i reserve the right to modify those protocols if circumstances warrant and we really do appreciate your observation of these protocols we're just going to go through the slips for a moment foreign forward a bit um yes did you go through the guidelines yeah gina if you could advance to the next slide one one more for me all right the first reception of visitors as doc dr kupka mentioned is for items that are action items this evening action items this evening include the consent agenda items that are listed and the other action items there which are approval of the proposed bell schedule approval of the calendar year insurance premiums the resolution to prevent sexual harassment and the second reading and approval of policies as well we have three comment slips for those items the first person i'd like to invite forward is carol davis gina if you could advance the slide once she starts speaking oh you got to go back good evening i'm carol davis and i moved to the district about four years ago my kids attended school in cook and lake counties and they are now grown and i am here to speak in favor of the proposed bell schedule though my kids are grown and attended high school in lake county they both experienced four years of rigorous and intense black scheduling i can speak to both the very real benefits and the very real detriments of black scheduling they also endured procedural changes regarding passing times between classes and lunch periods and that is why my ears perk up at the mention of bells and schedules i think we can all agree that little things can have a big impact when it comes to education because of my experience with black scheduling i identify with the concerns of parents who are worried about black scheduling while black scheduling has real advantages mainly that students and teachers have more time for in-depth instructions full black scheduling something this board is not considering also has serious drawbacks for many students particularly those that are in vocational programs like one of my own children was but that's another story for another time as stated previously a longer and structural instructional period can have advantages especially in subjects like music math and science and block scheduling provides this it was pleasing to see a hybrid schedule how i wish my children's high school had come up with that having black scheduling limited to one subject once a week is probably the optimal approach for a public high school that must accommodate numerous academic needs and learning styles the approach that the board and the staff have taken is holistic and well thought out when you look through the documentation that accompanies the proposed schedule it is evident that both the board and the faculty have done a thorough job of researching and acknowledging issues and concerns including the reality of a split lunch that black scheduling creates but with the proposed schedule it will only be on two days having one day a week to dig deep into a subject will have a big payoff for the students as stated earlier little changes can have big impact thank you [Applause] next is miss wandee i'm i think the last name is d having a hard time making it out somebody from west looking for uh it looks like the first initial is m and then looks like the last name might be d in what it lives in westmont i'm having a hard time reading the name here the subject says education but check first action first perception of visitors all right we'll move to the next one and uh the next person up is uh jim devitt i'm sorry second reception okay nick brownie maybe mcroundy mick roundy or mcbrowndy it's not an action item your item and action item or no okay okay we'll move on to the recommendations and reports of the superintendent returned in person learning all right gina if you'll advance the slides there uh so really there's been no change in guidelines from the state for return to in-person learning at each board meeting we've updated the board and the public on the number of close contacts and positive cases that have come our way each month we update the board on the number of staff positive cases as those numbers have been very small we've been reporting data across the district and across all staff so that there's not a chance of identifying who those individuals are as you can see we've remained pretty consistent since this well this is about a month's worth of data i give you there i think the range for positive students has been between one and five a week and the range for close contacts i think our highest number in a week was 23 and i think our lowest was one or two so it's been a pretty pretty consistent range though throughout the the whole year any questions on that all right gina if you could advance all right the next topic is the proposed bell schedule uh this is just an overview of kind of the flow of the week just a reminder for the board that tonight this is an action item and what we're asking is the board to authorize the the prototype schedule as it's structured and in doing so is authorizing the administration and staff to invest the hours into it that it's going to take for the solve force and the additional communications throughout the rest of the year as this is a time intensive project we want to make sure that the board is approving of us continuing to advance our time and effort in this as the school year proceeds uh if go to the next slide gina we sent out uh information to uh staff to students to families about uh many details around the proposed hybrid block and then ask for feedback on this we use that feedback to go against all of our our known issues that we're already starting to work on and solve for and to identify some concerns and misconceptions in a moment gene is going to share some of those with you and go through [Music] basically some some answers to some of those concerns as well as well as identifying some of the work that we have to do for the rest of the year in the end we believe that this is the right direction to go for our students as it will provide both the instructional opportunities that we need but will allow us to have each student's time more directly allocated to where their most essential points of need are or the areas that they want to advance the most in so we've gone back to the benefits many times over the last several months so i'm not going to read those through to the board but i'm going to turn it over to gina now to discuss some of the survey misconceptions and clarifications thank you dr thiele as we comb through the survey responses we identified several misconceptions or items that we wanted to clarify the first one is that many people commented on how a two-day block will lead to a four-day block we are not recommending a four-day block in fact we are advocating for a two-day block we are not considering a four-day block at this time in addition concerns were raised about supervision of students before school we currently have supervision of students before school and we will continue to provide supervision we absolutely have to supervise our students in the morning and throughout the day there were a few concerns about whether or not there'd be a sufficient period of time to conduct iep meetings the on the eight period days we are anticipating that the periods will only be a few minutes shorter in fact the block days will be longer so we do not feel that it will adversely impact iep meetings there were some questions about counseling and student support services and how their curriculum could be cut currently many of those lessons occurred during class so during an english class or during a social studies class in fact this schedule allows us the opportunity to incorporate that curriculum into our access period which will be on the block days and our resource periods that also will be on the block days so we do not anticipating needing to cut our c triple s curriculum some concerns were raised about split lunches we certainly know that a split lunch is not ideal for some classes and we will definitely take that into consideration as we're planning the schedule concerns were raised about professional development time and how professional development would be structured that is one of our salvors in fact we have a professional development committee that we are forming to work on it however professional development will occur on the block days during periods four five and six because teachers have a lunch period that falls either fourth fifth or sixth period in addition concerns are raised about course teams and time and we are we have a committee forming to consider how best to support our teachers our teams our departments on our common experience work so that committee will be working with that the hybrid block schedule will negatively impact certain programs there were specific comments to our cooperative work training course tcd our child development lab and we are working with different departments to consider how they may be impacted and to resolve any potential issues arise another concern that was raised was about the schedule being challenging for some students with executive functioning that they may not be successful under this model and although the schedules appears to be complex and we're looking at many different possibilities each student will have an established weekly schedule and we will be preparing each student on how best to navigate that schedule dr thule mentioned one of the salvors and we have created committees to work on these our access and resource period committee will work on structures and processes as well as some of those issues that came up about for example the counseling and student support services curriculum that will all be worked through through that committee which will begin meeting we plan to begin meeting next month part-time in traveling teacher schedules our opposite lunch classes athletics and activities professional development and then course team time so we are forming these committees that will be composed of administrators and teachers and as i said earlier source and resource period planning committee is being formed and will meet soon some of the things that we're working on in that committee or we're planning to work on is structure and building more structure at the beginning of the year and skill building we're also working on how to help students to transition and select help self-selected help for students in areas that they may need we're also working on what are the expectations during that time can we get guest speakers in from different groups like colleges and trades and local businesses how best to prepare our students for post-secondary guest speakers in all different areas and professions as well and then there are several yearly events that we participate in now that can be built into that either the access period or that resource period many different recognitions and celebrations that occur throughout the year and then other areas will be built in as well so it's a common misconception with the access and resource period because we want to get the board's approval before we spend staff time planning for each and every one of those days throughout the year is that it's going to be totally unstructured time and that's that's not the case you know they'll uh there'll be a lot more structure at the beginning of the years we teach students the skills of how to manage that one resource that one access period once a week where they're going to teachers and getting help or teachers or scheduling them into space but we need to build those skills at the beginning of the year so that students are doing that appropriately and then have supports there for when students don't use that time appropriately but then the other access and resource periods will have programming scheduled into them throughout the year so one of those access periods will be totally scheduled every week of the year and then half of the resource period will be scheduled with programming as well so we understand the concern of a full 78 minutes of no structure would be difficult for some if not many high school students to manage that's why you know we'll have alternating programming in that space so some of that time will be structured and some of that time will be there for students to either work on their own or get help from our resource centers during that back half of that time so as the year goes on uh you know we'll continue we're right here at finalizing the version the first version and then seeking approval and then throughout the rest of the year we're going to work on those solved floors and almost at every board meeting just as we did with the master facility plan just as we're doing with strategic planning any big change that we make we keep the board up to date as to the progress that we're making we're trying to do this in a very transparent and open fashion so that people are aware of the they get to see the plane as it's built right uh in many school districts that have gone through this change the whole plan is released in the spring of the year before the next fall when it's implemented and we know that that would cause a lot of concerns because it just shows up out of nowhere so part of the idea of planning and building this way is that over the course of the year the community gets to learn about it in manageable chunks right this is a lot for anybody to take in we know there's a lot of questions and concerns so we want to work over the whole course of the year kind of just here's the next thing get people's feedback be able to respond to that make it make adaptations in the plan as students and and families and staff raise concerns so that we have the best possible plan in place for next fall the first group that will work is the spot where the biggest concerns are the new thing with the access periods and resource periods that committee begins working i think uh very soon we're forming that committee now and then i think right after thanksgiving that group starts working so as soon as we have like a temp uh a tentative schedule together and then we put together rules and processes and all of those those all be coming to the board over the course of the year and to the public so that everybody can see how that's all coming together well in advance and then towards the end of the year we'll give a comprehensive overview of what next fall will look like so i think questions are next from the board any board member questions on what we've presented up to this point do you do you have a sense of how many alternate bell days there are right now right now i i don't i didn't go through and count them we did look at how many weeks have an alternate bell schedule in it and it's about half of the weeks and the year have some kind of alternative schedule in them so it's very like today was a monday late start schedule which is a different schedule that also had pbis inside of it so today was an alternate schedule so throughout the entire school year our students are navigating through either calendar changes based on holidays or events or schedule changes based on things like testing and pbis and pep assemblies and any number of things so it's very common for students and staff to have to manage an alternative schedule at various points throughout the week and the year and how long are the access periods uh currently we're looking at a 30-minute access period of course once that committee gets in and starts working and putting in actual ideas and lessons that might shorten up a little bit it might extend we also might play with the passing periods in there a little bit so there's some different still moving pieces that might flex as we move along and if we're going to make a recommendation to change that we'll we'll come back to the board with that information we've received some uh some pretty thoughtful emails um on both in both supporting and and concerns about the block schedule um obviously the solve fours is a little bit of a concern right what's our confidence that we can do it although um intuitively we know that we're not reinventing the wheel here and so other schools have have figured out the assault force and we certainly will and i know we have confidence to do that it's important that people have time to plan ahead of time for this and so i i really like this really long process we've been going through to get to that point i empathize with some of the concerns we've heard about wanting to hey just have one more year of keep things the same but in in fact this i think this schedule there's three days a week that are the same and um it's just those two days that there's a little bit of a difference in and i think that if we really believe that this is better right that it doesn't make sense for us to wait and i understand you know people have some apprehension over change but i think we've got the capability here to do this the right way and hopefully over the you know between now and next fall we can continue to build that trust with people um as they better understand what this involves um there's something else i wanted to say and i forgot oh what what do you how do you how do you speak to so we've gotten some emails about um some concern over actually a reduction in instructional time how do you respond to that yeah so there's a couple of ways of looking at it actual minutes we have to remember when we look at this model that the access periods are not lost minutes the idea is that we build to a spot where during that access period time that it's a restructuring of the minutes so students are moving to the teachers where they need to get help at that time or we're moving them there right but in some way it's that time is restructured so right now there's a time in each day where a student is successful in a certain course and they're spending more time in that class than they probably need to because they're doing just fine right but if they could get a little more help from this other class during the day they'd much rather have that time there where they're not as successful or somewhere where they're just like pushing way ahead so what this allows us to do is to individualize and personalize the educational experience for kids which is the direction that education is moving in so that their time is more spent where it's needed kid by kid rather than us just assuming every kid needs the same amount of time in every class each week across the board right and of course there's procedures and mechanics and making sure that students are ready for that change and that staff are and will front load that at the beginning of the year so access periods at the beginning of the year are going to look at a look at building a lot of those skills that students are going to need to be successful in this new model and then eventually we'll start transitioning to where students are either being assigned or are choosing as to which teachers that they need to go see and work further thank you you know i wanted to build on something did anybody else want to say something before i go in i wanted to build on something mike said you know i continue to struggle with this and i know that professional development are in the cell floors but we have heard from a lot of the community members as mike said on both sides of this and i guess my question is about the timeline and would it be advantageous to go forward with this but try but maybe give another year give you a year and a half to develop it versus half of a year give those juniors that last year of a more normal schedule but what are the disadvantages of doing that so first of all i think that this schedule offers us the the time flexibility and space to meet students needs and by putting that off some of our students that are most impacted especially by the pandemic right now this schedule is not providing that time and space and flexibility to to meet their needs and help them so we're saying to a group of students that are coming off of of a pandemic and might need some individual supports that well to just avoid change and to make it easier on on the administration and staff and we're going to put off something that could help you a year i don't like how that looks i think we're very able in the remainder of this school year to work through those solved force the professional development the time is built into the schedule for the professional development it's the actual activities that go inside of there and we right now with monday late starts we have to go through that exercise right now every year to prepare for what goes in the late start time this is just rethinking that as to how it fits into the rotating block time so it's not it's not a brand new concept it's not once again as mike said reinventing the wheel it's just planning differently and will that professional development time also include consideration of how you're going to evaluate that once this change is in place that teachers you know some will go to it like fish and water and some will struggle with it how we're going to evaluate that they are in fact using that extra time yeah it's the same it's the same mechanisms we use right now to evaluate teachers and make sure that they're using their time appropriately i would just be using it in this this new model but i i also think over the course of the year the administrative team will not think i know that is over the course of the year it's our responsibilities administrative team to bring suggestions to the board to how we monitor the progress of this so some of that is you need to build a little bit before i can come to you and say here are the absolute metrics that i would like to follow but we know that the number of student interactions with support that they use we should be following things like gpa for individual students and especially see students that might start out struggling catch up and advance their gpa because we're providing that individual support and i would think overall we should see the number of failures decrease in this model actually d's or f's decrease in this model because of the individual support that we're providing now it's going to be difficult that last metric will be difficult to separate all of the other things that we're doing to support students and the impact of coming off of a pandemic and all of those things to isolate those variables but we could definitely track students over time and see are they making progress if not why and is this model working for them any other questions i have a couple and looking at things like well first of all are you gonna try to restrict those access periods to wednesday and thursday for example like if there's a homecoming thing on a friday is there going to be a modified friday so that's that's the exact kind of things that we need to work through this year once we get this up and going is have the the conversation of on the week of an access do we just modify one of those block days so it's just the block days where we're playing with schedules or are we going to modify a friday because that's traditionally where it's fallen but week by week we're going to go through the school year and figure out how those things fall into what's there but as you can imagine it's going to take some time and effort i don't want to pull the administrative effort towards this until we get approval to move forward and then in things like physical education where there's exemptions or things you know that to me i i look at this and i see i see basically a way for a lot of kids to be done at 1 30 on wednesday and thursday and on one of those two days both actually because if they have a pe exemption for a semester and then possibly a eighth period study hall or you know some i mean it just it's jenny i did not hear you you can't hear me so the concern is around pe exemptions or study halls and then the amount of free time that students might have around that i think in other schools that we have seen move this way because students have more time during school day they actually see the number of study halls decrease and the number of academic courses increase which is a good thing overall right we want students more engaging in academic opportunities throughout the day so i think we're going to see the same thing happen with p exemptions and we're a lot of kids are taking pa exemptions because all of their evenings are full then they need the time during the day to get all of their homework done and those kinds of things between the change that we made in lunch this year next year with access and resource periods it's my belief that over time we're going to see less and less students engaging in in those activities and instead engaging in academic opportunities at the same time it is the time that students are flexing right so instead of doing that work in the evenings they're flexing that time to during the day if we look at how the world of work works for many of us your day is flexed as well you know the time that you're spending on work and on family and on recreation is all kind of getting intermingled as the world moves forward so respecting students use of time in this way is part of of this kind of schedule change and teaching them how to manage that appropriately as part of this as well and then what we're voting on is not a block schedule it's not a one the block schedule now it is a hybrid block but i mean that moving toward that has been decided well moving towards that is what we've been working on by voting on this tonight assuming you know there's board approval of this we'll continue to work towards that if it's a no vote today we'll have to figure out what the concerns are and try to address those and come back at a future board meeting but it is the intent of the administration to move towards this model because we strongly believe that this is how we can move education forward for students you know i like a lot of the things that you're promising with this schedule um especially for students in terms of the resources that they're going to be able to utilize um but i think the biggest thing that i've heard from students recently has just been especially for students who experienced a normal year and then a covered year in the hybrid year and then this year another year of the schedule that they're not used to seems to be just a bit overwhelming for them i think really what they're looking for is just consistency especially those who are juniors right now are going to be seniors next year i think they're really just they just want a normal school year or as close to as we as we can get but i do i like i like the idea of a block schedule in some capacity especially the things that it can provide to the students but i think uh if is there a way to vote on moving forward with coming up with some of the plans sort of fleshing out some of those ideas a little bit more so that we can get a better idea of what this is going to look like in practice because i feel like there's a lot of open-ended things that you're trying to work out right now um so it feels a little premature to vote to approve the schedule for for next fall yeah what you're proving tonight is really the basic structure for and for us to work inside of it and authorizing us to do the work right and then over the course of the year we'll continue to bring this to us bring this to you and to fill in the gaps right and if we get closer to the end of the school year and board members are concerned that oh this is too fast we should put this off a year we can make that decision later on in the year but i i need this to continue to move forward and say this is what we we intend on doing so that you know there's there's still a long time between now and next fall to for board members to to make the recommendation to the administration that we slow this down we delay a year it's possible that as we do this work with our staff we come with the same recommendation but right now i feel like we can get this work done we just need this this point in time to to move forward and say yep spend the time on this come back to us continue to address our concerns and the communities concerns and work on this over the course of the year and chris to address the concern about it's another year that changes in high school it changes every year for students right they're scheduled sometimes semesters to semester their schedule changes and as we established earlier week to week the schedule is changing the bell schedules are changing the calendar is changing so our students are very adaptable to uh to change right and it's our job to make sure that students that are challenged with that kind of change or have difficulties managing that kind of change that we're supporting them and making sure that they're successful inside of it so what would be the last date you'd have to have this solve for is done i mean you have to assign students to courses and juggle their schedules so we're not talking about like this final decision being made in you know august 1st no i mean we'll we'll continue to present over the course of the year i would expect that by the time that people go home in may right at the end of may that they would know pretty close to what their experience is going to be when they return in the fall right now it's nice for people to know what the schedule is going to look like it's important as department chairs move in and start scheduling classes and classrooms and teachers to make sure that things flow appropriately and that they know to start building towards that now because that's a long process to work to ultimately the schedule is still an eight period day right there's still three days a week that it's a eight period day so it's very much the schedule is going to be built very similar to how it's been built in the past which with a few caveats knowing that those periods move around a little bit on the block days but even up until may if we decided nope we're gonna just stay with the schedule that we have right now it'd be a very easy thing to just say we're not comfortable with this let's just stay with the eight period day because that's what it's structured around right the only thing we're doing fundamentally is just changing the order and the length of periods on tuesday or on wednesday and thursday each week so it's it's a shifting of time in the bell schedule on those two days much like what we did today for a late start monday with a pbis schedule right we changed the bell schedule around on today that's all that is all we're setting up is to do on wednesday and thursday each week throughout the school year if we wanted to go back to what we have now it's a very easy thing to decide later on this year that no we've decided we're not comfortable you administration you've brought us all of these things you've solved for all of the we're just not ready to move forward at this point at which point we could just keep doing what we're doing now um without you know forcing kids to choose different courses or you know anything like that but we also think it's important as students go into course scheduling to think about well maybe i will take that extra course because there's enough time in here i don't feel like i need a study hall you know there's certain decisions like that that might play into a student's course selection that we feel it's important that they get an idea of what the schedule might look like when they head into that time ultimately i'll need to see you know these solve force solved right correct but bottom line what this boils down to is the goal of this is greater student success there's no reason to do this unless we think that this is going to help the students next year greater more than if we left things as it is and it's the job of our administration right to prove to us that that this is this is going to be the result and so ultimately the burden is is on hank and the staff at this point i think you know i'm supporting what you know going forward with this of course with the reservation i think that everybody has and you've already stated this hank if these softwares can't be solved in a in a in an adequate way that student success will be greater then we back the ship up you know back the truck up and move forward next year as we have in the past absolutely tonight's the authorization yeah to task me with bringing you all of those solved force and making sure all of your concerns are answered over the course of this school year so that's what a yes vote is this evening to kind of revisit what nancy brought up in looking at the juniors this year and just what they've already adapted to is there any is there a way that you could begin this with the incoming freshmen no this needs to be a holistic schedule change there's a lot of courses that run with all four grade levels in them so it isn't something where you could just do a school within the school model and isolate it to one grade level it's an all or nothing change it's a good question all right any other questions on this one thank you board for your time on this one i know that this is a big change and it's a lot to take in and we'll continue to answer those questions hopefully over the course of the year assuming a positive vote this evening before we move on to insurance plans good uh let's just have a mask check people in the back i'm people in the back let's everybody needs to put their mask on we need to comply ma'am in the red could you put your mask on please these young men up here okay please just just please put on the mask so please put on your mask so we can continue thank you if there are going to be outbursts if there are going to be outbursts and i feel or any member of the board or administration feels that the safety of the people in this room are at jeopardy i am going to adjourn the meeting i will call for adjournment so let's be quiet let's put our masks on and let's move on to the exciting discussion of insurance all right the next item gina uh calendar year 2022 insurance premiums i've shared this information with the board previously if you go to the next slide gina uh premiums are increasing and this is done with uh hub who is our uh oh boy mark what's the name of they are our program manager uh so this is based on actual costs in our plan our ppo plans are all self-insured plans so this is based on actual and projected costs in those plans you can see a various number of increases for each of those plans across the board that the board will be voting on this evening to take action on this is sets up the opportunity for us to go into open enrollment starting very soon after pending board approval this evening gina if you go to the next slide because we recognize that some of those premium increases might be challenging we're introducing a new plan offering that's a another ppo plan it's a consumer-driven health plan it is a lower premium plan but a higher deductible plan but comes with a health savings account and we're recommending that the board increases contributions to this plan because the premiums are lower so it's a way of saving sharing that savings with the employees and then one more slide i think gina nope no that was it so uh it's oh it was on in the text of there so for each of the ppo plans we have a a percentage of covering by employee group and we're recommending that by the board approving these tonight that they would pass on a 5 additional contribution for this ppo plan for each of those groups respectively so the board's been through this as is benefits and i've provided a lot of information are there any outstanding questions on this topic all right i'll invite mark to come up to address the post issuance tax compliance report one of the board's favorite reports of the year well yes it's my responsibility to give a post-issuance text compliance reports so this is for bonds when we issue them after they're out in in the communities and in the market we need to monitor them each year to make sure if we have arbitrage report that to irs if we're doing things with the with a private concern which we shouldn't be doing we would need to report that or any changes in our major financial changes in our finances um if we we have to have our kaffir put on the web once a year updated and things like in 2018 we had an upgrade in our status to double a plus and that needed to be reported just so the people that hold the bonds have an idea what's going on in the district and there's a little complex report that's there um along with the memo that i have presented in the board packet that shows we've met all the compliance issues that we need to with that and we're in shape for this all year any questions for mark all right thank you nicely done mark thank you all right i'm going to invite jim forward to go through the capital improvement plan for next year okay first slide it's a combo tonight i'm going to bring some esser funding and projects that gina brought to the board in september kind of go through them a little bit just to give you an idea of what they are in a timeline so there's four that are going to go to esser projects one's already completed it's the eating area at south pavers are done uh just need to get furniture we'll be doing that opening up for spring rooftop units so there's three here uh hvac one's a cooling unit one's a packaged heating and cooling unit and an air handler so these are three that were due to be done in the near future some of the benefits of why we're doing this through esser greater supply of fresh air instead of the 25 percent they give a hundred percent also the filtration we can bump up to a higher merv rating so particulates will be caught and better fresh air throughout the classroom aztecs exchanges so in the end air quality improvement timeline the date in december i'll bring that to you in january and then construction for this next summer if you remember last year's capital plan we had north chiller replacement on it that was funded by us or two network was completed this past summer we added an additional project if you remember the leak here at north in the wood boards warping part of the problem was the drainage and the roof that was not completed through mfp so we're going to finish that project with capital funding from this year hope that's not too confusing so we got rid of north chiller off the list we added north roof on the list again the bid date will be in december i'll bring that to you in january and construction will start the summer next slide you know okay the capital plan most of these you're familiar with large rms maintenance repairs for our schools as the year goes by unexpected annual bleacher repair we do a yearly inside and outside bleacher inspection and then that money is allotted for the repairs of that boiler replacement is for district building at the asc that's the original 1993 boiler so useful life out of it and we're going to replace that this coming summer ffa for the buildings you'll see that for both north and south so i'll just go through that that's furniture fixtures and equipment that are needed grouse repair outside work science lab 318 those are floor tiles that are popping up we'll replace that floor with similar floor that we did with the mfp that you're seeing throughout the building grounds mower and tractor it's a combo at north those are old pieces of equipment need to be replaced so we're going to package them together building automated system that's for the main office here at north so upgrades to that physical education office here at north that's a renovation that was done in 1999 so they're going to redo that office there's 11 teachers make some space get some new furniture do some work in there again ffa and grounds for south similar to north social studies office renovation at south that'll be similar to what we did with mfps redoing the renovation of the area for the staff that's a bigger one than at north softball field and dugout renovation there'll be new dugouts there's also some drainage issues at home plate so that that work will be done as well and a towel handler which is basically a forklift on wheels you see them a lot of construction sites south never had a forklift so what they use for many things that they're going to need including getting up to 40 feet high on their buildings exchanging filters things like that any questions no no no not for me thanks jim thank you thank you update to the resolution to prohibit sexual harassment all right so several years ago schools across illinois were passing these resolutions there's been changes in several of the policies and laws well laws and then policies that impact this resolution what this is is a cleanup of both the resolution and the policies that are that are connected to it to keep up with changes in state and federal law once again the wrong order federal and state law so it's the recommendation of the administration tonight that the board approved this resolution to just be in compliance with with those changes any questions all right here i'm done freedom of information acts yeah requests yep we had them uh this month we've responded to several and the results of those are posted on the district website uh gina if you advance uh well i think i'm out of order but later on there's a slide that maybe i didn't even include it but up on the website if you search for foias you can find all of them okay moving on to the consent agenda is there any item any member of the board wishes to remove for further discussion [Music] hearing none i need a motion for the board of education to approve the consent agenda as presented which includes the personnel report transfer of physician classified appointments classified leave of absence classified the personnel report retirement certified retirements classified resignations classified and the financial pages so move second i think it was terry and mike mike thank you very much terry pavisic aye mike davenport aye christopher espinoza hi shirelle fuller aye jenny hagstrom aye joanna vazquez drexler aye aye nancy kupka aye the consent agenda passes now we move on to the action items uh first we need a motion for the board of education to approve the bell schedule for the 2022-2023 school year as presented so moved second mike and i didn't hear a second second terry thank you mike davenport aye terry pavich aye joanna vazquez drexler aye christopher espinoza aye shirelle fuller no jenny hagstrom no nancy kupka i it passes next we need a motion for the board of education to approve the calendar year 2022 insurance plans and premiums as presented so move second [Music] district mike timmerman thank you trey pavich aye mike davenport aye christopher espinoza aye cheryl fuller aye jenny hagstrom aye joanna vazquez drexler aye nancy kupka aye the motion curies and finally we need a motion for the board of education to adopt a resolution to prohibit sexual harassment as presented so moved exactly mike and terry gary terry thank you mike davenport aye terry pavicich aye joanna vazquez drexler aye christopher espinoza aye cherelle fuller hi jenny hagstrom aye and nancy kupka aye certainly passes okay moving on to old business this is the motion for the board of education to approve the policies as presented [Music] mike and joanna thank you mike davenport aye joanna vazquez drexler aye christopher espinoza aye sharel fuller aye jenny hagstrom aye terry pavicich aye and nancy kupko aye the policy security okay we're going to move into the second reception of visitors prior to today you had a statement you wanted to read first of all just some process and protocol we have a large number of people that wish to speak this evening that filled out comment slips i have prioritized them according to board policy to those that are residents in the district 99 attendance area and those that are not i believe that in the time that is allocated we would not be able to get through more than half of the people that wish to speak so my recommendation to you dr kapka is you have the right to set the rules for this evening are that we extend the amount of time that we hear perspectives of our visitors but we also shorten the amount of time that each person speaks to be respectful of the amount of time that this evening takes so i'm i'm recommending two minutes per speaker but extending the amount of time to be 40 minutes of total time it works for me does any board member have an issue with that okay so once we i'll start the clock once we start calling people up but before we start that i would i have a statement that i would like to read in anticipation of what i believe some of the speakers are here to speak about tonight so good evening everyone before we begin the reception of visitors i would like to address a few matters in regards to instructional resources including library books and processes around selection and retention of these resources i believe based on what i've seen here that we have several visitors in the room tonight that are here in regards to the book genderqueer public schools are governed by federal and state laws along with board policies and administrative regulations the book genderqueer meets the criteria for inclusionary library under the guidelines in our collection development policy this is an optional book and not part of any course or required reading however just as there is a process to determine if a title should be in our library there is a process to determine if the title should remain in our collection board policy 6.260 a establishes the right for a resident to challenge an instructional resource through an objection form we have received two such objection forms for the book genderqueer our established well-defined process which has been used in the past allows residents an opportunity to provide a rationale as to why this title should no longer be in our collection the process is followed to determine the validity of this request our administration is dedicated to ensuring this process is followed with fidelity and that everyone's rights are respected ultimately a superintendent my responsibility is to ensure that the laws policies and regulations are followed correctly i will continue to do that properly as we advance through the process the outcome of the process will determine this community's determination if this resource should remain in our collection although we welcome everyone's perspectives this evening the ultimate decision of this book are independent and the process is already underway i ask that this evening as you choose to share your perspectives that you remain respectful of those in the room others watching online at home and those in attendance this evening including your fellow community members students in the room board members administration and our student board members present this evening with that we can start the reception of visitors gina i feel a dance [Applause] if you'll advance to the timer that's two minutes and then back up one slide skip past that one [Music] all right i think if you go one more it will start the two minute timer go ahead and then you can back up and then we can advance when the first person comes up to speak thank you all right as i indicated according to our policy i will be calling up people that have attested that they are residents of the district 99 attendance area first this is starting at 7 40 so it will end at 8 20.

like to recognize anyone well thank you community members for coming on out on director pollowing is here he'll give an update on our life health safety um we have our cea president vice president thank you for joining us tonight we have our auditing firm thank you for being here this week kicks off american education week where we we celebrate public education today is actually school board uh member appreciation day and it would be remiss to not thank each other one of our school board members for their service to the district um as an unpaid elected official so thank you we're going to open this up to a public comment uh you can keep your comments about three to four minutes we have some other business to go over tonight so um stephanie allison can i pull it down to speaker you want it up keep it up that would be if we have a hard time understanding we might do something different but okay thank you no problem all right first i want to read your community relations public relations guideline the board president is the official spokesperson number one developing community understanding of school operation number two gathering community attitudes and desires for the district securing adequate financial support for a sound educational program helping the community feeling more direct responsibility for the quality of education provided by their schools earning the community's goodwill respect and confidence promoting a genuine spirit of cooperation between the school and the community keeping the news media accurately informed coordinating with the district safety coordinator to provide accurate and timely information to the appropriate individuals during an emergency with that in mind as a parent of a child in the district based on these goals goals for community relations we'd like to know how the district is going to handle the progressive bills that passed in illinois in regards to sex education beginning in kindergarten seo slash crt curriculum with one kid with young kids being taught to feel oppressed or guilty for the skin color they were born all where they're trying to navigate learning to read and write growth hormones and everything else also the push for gender fluidity to confuse them more i ask is the same science being used in regards to the masks our kids have to wear the one that says that there are more than two genders as a concerned parent what are you going to do about it you say you have our kids best interests and safety at heart but if you did you'd also be pushing back against an experimental vaccine the recovery rate for children with covet is extremely high citing webmd coping 19 survival is between 97 to 99.75 percent i also want to ask you know what it's like to hear firsthand a horrible vaccine reaction because i do as a 911 dispatcher in neighboring county i've taken five calls in one hour from one of our vaccination sites at one of the schools in one of our towns we serve hearing over and over 12 year olds passing out going into seizures or taking calls day later for a teenager who can't feel their legs after receiving their second dose what is being done to our children is criminal the mental health crisis among children is growing and very real and this curriculum and coveted fear is the gasoline to the fire taking calls for behavior issues and suicide for children continues to rise again i ask you if the safety and well-being is your top priority for the children in this district what are you doing to truly be their advocate i'll end with this the only privilege that my son will have instilled is that god sacrificed his only son so that he could be saved thank you for your time thank you stephanie uh next leanne larson hello and um i too would like to say thank you to the school board members for your volunteer work and the time that you put in it's um i'm sure very time consuming and a challenging task that you're doing for the community but we do appreciate it we really do tonight i'm here to request that the board and the district administrators improve the way they are communicating to our community currently i receive emails from time to time and a quarterly newsletter i can express my concerns at these meetings or by contacting someone at the district office but that's it lately there's not been any public forums or questions and answers there's no news conferences and no requests for input from the community on specific issues this lack of discussion seems to be creating more questions than answers people want to know the issues the board is considering before the decisions are made we want the opportunity to ask questions and get answers and share our ideas and concerns from the community section of the 301 website on the board of education page a couple of the sections addressed this specifically the lady that spoke before me stephanie mentioned community relations and just the summary for that was the public relations program should include things such as regular news releases concerning district programs policies etc news conferences slash interviews as requested or needed and publications having a high quality of editorial content and effective format another section is titled section 8.95 is parental involvement and this is quoted from the website in order to ensure collaborative relationships between students families in the district and to enable parents slash guardians to become active partners in education the superintendent or designee shall want keep parents guardians thoroughly informed about their child's school and education encourage parents and guardians involvement in their schools in their child's school and education three establish effective two-way communication between parents guardians and the district four seek input from parents and guardians on significant school related issues and five informed parents and guardians on how they can assist their children's learning and a final comment there was the superintendent shall periodically report to the board on the implementation of this policy that's specifically the parental involvement policy in my opinion currently i don't think i'm currently being thoroughly informed i've not been asked for my input from the district lately on any significant school related issues such as a significant increase in behavioral problems and students with anxiety and i hear about that a lot from teachers principals other people in the district that the level of behavioral problems has skyrocketed and i'm sure a lot of it's due to covid but this isn't being discussed with the community the current quarterly newsletter feature that we got this fall it featured topics such as teacher conferences and bus safety but nothing about what our district is considering or has already implemented in regards to critical race theory there are sections about enrollment numbers budget updates and developmental programs for teachers but we have no idea what the board is considering in regards to transgender policies at the schools when we hear what is happening in neighboring districts without the knowledge of those communities we can't help but wonder what our school board might be doing that they don't want us to know about not accusing anybody but that is what comes up when we're not getting the information we're assuming that something might be going on that we're going to hear about later a monthly update devoted to serious topics would be extremely helpful an online survey for feedback would also be welcomed and i'm not talking about the five essentials survey which in my opinion it's mostly vague multiple choice questions it's not specific for our community public forums like news conferences would be very well attended a few years ago there were some focus groups that dr stern was involved in developing and those were very engaging so perhaps those could be revived also announcing the school board elections well in advance and having town hall q a sessions would engage more people to either run for one of the positions or at least learn about the candidates and their stance on the current issues the community is not the enemy here we are serious about keeping 301 a great place to live work and raise our families we deserve the opportunity to do more than receive emails and quarterly newsletters please consider what you can do as representatives of our community to hear from us more often and in other ways thank you very much thank you thanks leah next we're not assuring thank you to all of you for serving the community we do all appreciate it i have a couple points tonight um our children should not be masked that is my opinion masks inhibit breathing masks cover one's facial expressions current first graders have never known school without wearing a mask we are teaching kids to live in fear and not depend on their own robust immune systems is there a point when as a district you as board members would rescind mass orders if you determined the governor's edicts were too far reaching critical race theory does not belong being taught in any school if critical race theory is not being taught is sel or social emotional learning which you explain the difference between the two and thirdly communication is imperative between a school district and the community parents throughout the us have begun attending board meetings in mass after learning of inappropriate content being taught as well as inexcusable books being available children are a parent's responsibility not the schools students should be taught and never indoctrinated with ideology that doesn't align with our constitution if certain curriculum or agendas are being pushed by the state it is incumbent on you as a board to act in a morally proper way parents and taxpayers should at the very least have a seat at the table in discussing controversial positions you will ultimately be judged by your actions and i pray that you choose wisely thank you dave chapman good evening thank you for listening to my comments tonight i understand the challenges you face as a school board during this unique time in education the system the decisions you make are definitely not easy ones every year the mental health of our students has been a priority especially this year as we've transitioned back to full in-person learning given the unique circumstances this school year we also need to address the mental health of our educators so we can properly educate our students staff are already feeling burnt out and stressed and there are many reasons for this some of which are we're still not in a normal school year educators are tasked every day with implementing covet procedures and restrictions in the classroom while helping students continue the transition back to being fully in person and the expectations and responsibilities that go along with that teachers are also taking on district initiatives that were usually handled on school improvement days but are now occurring during our plan time we've also lost access to resources this school year for a variety of reasons which include the student online personal protection act also known as sopa this is added to the time to develop curriculum and has overall added more to our educators plates when it comes to preparing for our student learning to help with the subbing shortage educators are giving up their planned time and lunch to sub for colleagues who themselves are out sick caring for their own children or are out due to coveted related reasons these are just some of the reasons we are seeing an impact on the emotional well-being of staff this school year our educators are going above and beyond as you can see but need your help there isn't enough time in the day this school year to effectively plan for students a possible solution is to implement early release days district-wide at all grade levels for this school year this edit time would help our educators plan for students collaborate with colleagues and reduce stress in a year that is still anything but normal i'm hopeful a solution like this would help alleviate the burnout placed on our educators and give them the necessary time to educate our students thank you for your time for listening thanks david all right next we're gonna have a presentation on our audit from the heater cassella and company and kathy naftan is from eder casella um she's a senior manager at better castle she's been there for um 15 years so she's got a report for both northern kane and central 301 thank you for trying thanks for having me give me one second here get situated okay i understand you should have draft copies of the audit report and i think it's a final copy for northern queen so i will start with central's [Applause] the big [Laughter] it's something that i'm passionate about and and i enjoy but i understand that it's not for everyone all right i'm ready almost ready okay um again thank you for having me i love to talk about my work i'm excited about it um and i know it's it's a really important step in in terms of governance over your school district so um i again it's something to me i like to come and point out the district's accomplishments in regard to you know fiscal responsibility um the auto went really well as usual you know we usually um come out here dana and her staff was well prepared very accommodating you know any requests or anything that we have you know we get timely information etc as part of the audit we evaluate the district's internal controls over financial reporting and then we test those controls to make sure that they generally um are appropriate working properly implemented and so on and then as part of the audit we usually make recommendations if we find things that are not necessarily reportable comments you know we we work with the district to you know improve their controls where needed uh maintain those controls and we've never you know had any kind of issues with management not not repeating our recommendations ah good news in terms of this year there was no formal management letter um that means that we did not find anything that is required to be reported under uh governmental auditing standards so that's always uh positive the audit report itself as you mentioned is is rather large one of the first items you will find in the audit report and this year it's page one it's not the first page it's page one is our audit opinion so generally what this does is outline the responsibility of the district the responsibility auditors and then give some information about what we looked at in terms of internal controls and financial statements and and ultimately it gives our opinion so the district's uh our opinion for over the district's financial statements is is considered adverse and the reason that uh is true is because the district reports on the regulatory basis of accounting which is the basis of accounting prescribed and permitted by the state board of education so in other words it does not follow gaap which is generally accepted accounting principles that's that's basis that's used if you think about business financial statements and so on so under the regulatory basis however the district's financials are found to be unmodified the opinion over those financial statements are unmodified in other words it's a clean opinion the opinion letter also discusses that we evaluated internal controls over the financial reporting and compliance with laws regulations and grant agreements we test those controls but we don't provide an opinion on those uh in terms of the federal audit there's a section at the back of the auditory report that discusses the federal audit this year we tested two programs one is special education that's a large program for the district we've tested it in the past and then we've also tested the new program the covet 19 elementary and secondary education or emergency relief act it's esser so that was a new program we have no findings to report in terms of compliance over those federal programs despite esther being a new program with continually changing guidance so that's that's actually good news then we have no findings there one thing i want to mention at this point is that the reason that you're looking at a draft of the audit is that the guidance for esser we're expecting some updated guidance to come out supposedly in november so we didn't want to finalize we recommended the district didn't finalize their audit until that guidance comes out we really don't expect it to change anything in the financial statements but just to be safe we decided it would be a good idea to kind of hold off on finalizing all right um the rest of the audit report if you scroll down or page down to page five is where basic financial starts [Applause] and what you're going to see on page five is essentially assets liabilities and then fund balances of the district i'll let you catch up here so you'll see that across the top are the columns for the various funds held by the district and this essentially shows the assets any liabilities that the district might have and then fund balance just wanted to mention a little bit about fund balance on in a cash basis you will be looking at fund balance as reserved or unreserved and any unreserved fund balances are could be designated or undesignated um in the education fund what you see is reserve fund balance uh specifically used what you have this year is a reserve for student activity funds and driver ed funds uh unused driver ed funds and then under designated fund balance you have the district designates early property taxes in other words the 2020 levy is supposed to be used for 2022 expenditures so that's generally what you're going to see in designated fund balance um let's see there's also a small designation for interest collected to be used for future interfund transfers if need be um and that's a policy that the district has had for a long time right the next financial statement is basically the statement of revenues um expenditures and then change in fund balance and that starts i think on page eight here yeah page excuse me while you're taking through um i really don't have a lot to say here all i just want to explain the purpose of the financial statement it summarizes the revenue that the district received and the expenditures based on the functions in the district and then shows the excess or deficiency of the revenue over expenditures um and that combined with the beginning fund balance will provide you with the ending fund balance one comment i wanted to make was you'll see a fund balance adjustment in and it refers to footnote 17.

so i'll start first with exciting recognitions and presentations so i'll turn first to dr mr phillips about our tips for education dollars thank you dr sid this is a uh each year since i think 2016 we went to the city of columbus and requested some dollars back to the school professional corporation to assist with a few different areas with us and those areas in our requests are always tied to workforce development so we have worked with ask for dollars to assist with our transitions program special education students lead students into the workforce as well as [Applause] as well as stem activities within the school corporation and then igrad as well and igrad is a program we have at the high school level that tries to meet the needs of our most irish students and ensure that they can graduate from high school so those are three programs that's been pretty consistent over the last five years and we made that request once again and uh we are pleased that mayor luna is here and the city council for the city of columbus approved that grant request so i believe mayor lip you might have some dollars for us [Laughter] seriously you know dr shed when i was listening to your comments with respect to the difference between teaching and educating you know it brings true i mean what we want here in the city of columbus is a well-educated workforce and we believe that it starts with what you folks do with pathology consolidated schools and so we think it's incumbent upon us to be your partner and so we've uh we've offered uh dr roberts says they come down and request well they come down and requested our request because we want to participate in in what goes on here at the school corporation because we believe it's it's just well done you know so with that in mind as as dr roberts said i'll just repeat there are four programs this year that uh you know this money is dedicated for one is igrad the second is stem then there's information technology pathway which is a new program with ivy tech that's for 72 000 this year and then transition planning which has been you know one of the three that had been with us from the start so once again we want to thank you for the the work that you do in our community and educating our our youth and we're happy to be a participant so with that in mind dr roberts i'll step up you would come forward over here yes thank you all right next on our agenda is the opportunity for us to recognize the columbus north girls and boys cross country teams as well as one of our very special seniors at columbus north so who am i calling on looks like mr lewis athletic director of columbus north all right thank you [Music] oh my goodness did they tell you you had to have a big trophy first i just want to thank the song can you guys hear me just want to thank the board for allowing our student athletes to be recognized for all of the hard work and effort they put into this season i think danny and rick slew does a great job of coaching our kids and pushing them to that point where they become great at what they're trying to do um i think one thing that sticks out to me is they're out there every single day reigns let us know um supporting our kids and they're out there working hard as well one of the things that sticks out to me is the monday after they won state they were out there running and training again i'm like okay well you guys just got done wanting to stay like why are you guys steady running so it's just an honor to them to show that i appreciate you guys hard work and i'm quite sure you know our coaches do as well so i don't know if you guys want to say anything or yeah for me i just want to say thank you on behalf of the boys team um you know without you guys making the tough decisions and doing what's best for the boys and the girls and everybody in school corporation we wouldn't be up here with the opportunity to talk about the boys and the girls so i know on our my behalf i really appreciate that um you know we have a great team we were we were third in the state this year um and and that's a great privilege one of the deepest teams in recent history um and i'm really proud of the boys and i hope they represent the community um and the school corporation uh with the standards that you guys that you guys set so thank you for that thank you absolutely thank you we didn't want to be outdone with the big check that the mayor brought so we brought um it's the first time we met i'm not making a good impression um but um seriously and congratulations to the boys team and reece kilburger stump for being the individual champion which i know you guys will talk about but we were really impressed with that our girls are watching out on the way over on the bus so congratulations and our girls team um you know i think we have good leadership at our building all the way down mr clark and mr lewis and then that's a reflection of obviously who hires those individuals so thank you for that opportunity to know coach weaver our assistant coach she and i um it makes us look good when we have good talent and dedicated athletes and and that's really reflection of them starting in kindergarten and working their way through so thank you for the opportunity and and we were just blessed to uh they they love wearing their columbus stuff and they make fun of me for wearing the flying sea all the time but we love columbus north and we love our district so thank you very much for that opportunity and and we just enjoy we enjoy the opportunity to celebrate with you guys so thank you thank you all right thank you very much [Laughter] [Applause] thank you thanks for everything um [Laughter] thank you sir have a good evening all right thank you thank yeah they're almost all the same height it's the same stride [Laughter] [Music] congratulations [Laughter] [Music] yeah let's talk a little bit more about rhys gilbert stump obviously he was individual champion uh this year um you know i'm gonna start off real quick and apologize for him not being here last summer because he was at team camp when he was runner-up in the track uh he chose i made the decision uh that it was more important for him to be with his teammates and the more you know of this individual the more you understand that decision and i love that about him and it's a great representation of our team and i hope you guys respect that and again i apologize for that reese obviously won the individual title won a lot of races this year a lot of a lot of accomplishments that he had and our boys had um between the starting line and the finish line what this young man has accomplished between the finish line and the next starting line and the starting line he's about to start in life um is is just incredible um you know i don't i can go on and on for uh and talk about him and i know i'm gonna keep it short because he does not like me talking about him he does not like to be set an example for the accomplishments that he's done on and off the course but i'll leave you with the story that um every every recruiting call i get for him i talk to him i tell the story and it was a last spring he just ran four events which is the max he can run in the dual meet versus another team none of them were his favorite but he did them for the betterment of the team all the boys went home he was cooling down because he was in the last uh he's in the four by four in the last he was the anchor all the boys went home us coaches and mr lewis were sitting around talking about what we could do better or what you know how the meat went so to speak rhys was cooling down on the turf picking up picking up leftover socks leftover trash um nobody asked him to do that nobody's watching him do that he didn't do that for the betterment or because he knew people were watching he did that because that's out of the goodness of his heart and i couldn't do i couldn't ask for a better young man to coach i couldn't ask for a better young man to go through our program and that's the story that i told mr clark in his letter of recommendation or whatever nomination for mental attitude award winner uh in the cross country it is obviously somebody gets that every year it is not every year and is very rare for somebody to win the individual title and get that as well that award as well so hats off to reece and again none of us be doable if you guys did not give us an opportunity to do this as well so thank you guys thank you rhys thank you very much reese before you sit down can you tell us what's going through your mind with that picture right there yeah i love that that picture too yeah yeah so congratulations girls and guys on just an outstanding track seat or cross country season and reece with your individual performance there as well it was fun to pay attention to you all fall right thank you we're all very very proud and you can't see but there are huge smiles underneath these masks all right next we have the opportunity to listen to a presentation from mr yates from our richard l johnson center good evening i'm shane yates director of pre-k i do not have a big check i do not have a state championship title but i do have 60 amazing staff members who impact more than 300 three and four-year-olds every day and and i'm blessed to work with an amazing group of people it starts with this group right here this is kim bachmeier assistant director okay edgar and udl facilitator at for pre-k and schmidt and then jessica anderson pre-k teacher at busy bees good evening i'm just going to give a quick update on our bcsc pre-k program currently we have 233 pre-k students that is our four-year-olds we have 41 early childhood students and that is our three-year-old program off to the left you can see our demographics there and then our locations last year we had seven locations and this year we were fortunate enough to add another one at francis smith elementary and hopefully get to expand even more next year we have four early childhood classrooms we have one classroom starting its fourth year at the legato spanish immersion academy and then we started a new integrated pathways classroom this year and that classroom includes students with autism paired with their peers who are typically developing and then that classroom also consists of one classroom teacher one board certified behavior analyst and two registered behavior technicians and that classroom was inspired by angela allen and she is here this evening if you have any questions regarding that new classroom okay the best practices we want to discuss with you this evening come from conscious discipline i came into my current role about six years ago we had 19 classrooms in nine different locations for pre-k we had 19 different versions of pre-k and what i quickly realized that was that we needed a common language we needed a common approach so that as a parent as i am now a parent i could rely on whatever school i sent my child to would be similar whether it was taylorsville busy bees south side or any of the other options i was fortunate a couple years ago to work with dr hack to participate in a book study with conscious discipline that helped me develop skills as a leader that i didn't previously have to look at situations in a different way that i hadn't previously for example i was able to move from looking at behaviors and barriers to students with missing skills as i began that journey i quickly realized that it wasn't it was far beyond growth for me it was it was growth that my staff needed so we could use to ultimately impact our students i look forward to mrs anderson sharing a little bit more to paint that picture for you three main components of conscious discipline align beautifully with universal design for learning they are safety connection and problem solving and i love that they honor what we've been learning about for so many years regarding how our brains learn and how we are best able to meet our learning needs in the classroom for adults and for students the safety component is what you implement first with conscious discipline and it's looking at how controlling and changing ourselves is possible and has a profound effect on others and that is influential both for the adults in the room as well as the students so i think all of us in in this group this evening have learned a lot about how that affects how conscious discipline affects us as the adults in the classroom the next one is connection and that addresses how connectedness really governs our behavior and it honors the emotional state of our brain and it's all about encouragement and choices again that udl connection as well as teaching students how to have empathy for each other and the adults in the classroom and finally we look at problem solving that's kind of the final piece of the puzzle with conscious discipline with problem solving we see conflict as an opportunity to teach and mistakes are an opportunity to learn something new and this is honoring the executive state of the brain and this is where we really want students to be at when they're in our classroom so that they're able to ask questions and they're curious about what they're learning each of these three components asks three main questions and jessica is going to talk more about that as she shares about her classroom good evening i'd like to tell you a little bit about why i think conscious discipline is best practices for our classrooms we'll touch base on a few things development of a common language different breathing and calming techniques that we utilize working on building relationships because that's what our classroom is about the use of visual visual pieces to help friends who may have difficulties with expressing their emotions and we provide the skill of assertiveness both for our staff and for our students this oh sorry this is a picture of nash we have permission from his parents to talk about his victories from last year he came to us with some goals and he needed to learn self-control he needed expressive and receptive language skills and he needed to learn communication with his peers it was about this time last year that we started our book study of conscious discipline and right away i noticed different skills that we could use from that to help him with his day we watched nash use these visuals and he not only expressed himself but he also was able to set boundaries for himself he was respecting boundaries from his peers he was talking to his peers more he was learning through his visual schedule and we just watched him not just meet those goals but exceed those goals and be ready for kindergarten the next year this is just a small part of some of the tools that we use we have our worry monsters they take the worries away we have different types of social emotional pieces that help you identify your body language along with those emotions how your body can show how you feel even though your words can't we talk about the first step and the most essential step for conscious discipline is to have a common language in the classroom your staff members need to know that you're saying the same thing to the students you don't want to send mixed messages to your kids so we utilize and we have these on lanyards these are the seven skills of conscious discipline and the verbiage that you use for the different situations are on these so that we are maintaining that common language in our classroom and that the students you actually hear them as they hear us speaking you hear them saying the same things to their peers so they're learning through modeling by us and they're also learning empathy as they're teaching their peers they're checking on their peers they're conscious of what's going on in our classroom um let's see here these are also some of the other tools that we have in our classroom different breathing techniques and how we do our classroom management and this is our calm corner where friends can go they don't have to be upset they don't have to be disruptive in the classroom this is a safe place that we can go when we come in maybe we've had a bad day maybe something happened on the bus this is just a safe area where we can be by ourselves we have different calming tools that they can use a cuddle ball we have a breathing flower we have different like squishies so that they can exert their energy but we also teach them about breathing techniques and before we go into any situation with our students we make sure that our bodies are calm so we call ourselves star breathers we stop we take a breath we relax we say hey i've got this i can help these friends i'm going to find out what is causing these disruptions it's not the kid being bad it's something that they're lacking so we teach the kids the different the star breathing the balloon breasts the drain and the pretzel their favorite is always the balloon and we do that through our transition times i'll say hands on top everybody stop once their hands are up there we do three breaths and they get to make a little funny noise with their mouth so they love that it's a connected piece for us as well another part of our classroom is connection am i loved the students on the other side you saw the handprints and then you saw the red and green choices so we connect that to our pbis by talking about am i am i safe am i kind am i responsible and we have the visuals there that kind of show what choices can we make that are safe kind and responsible are we being helpful in our classroom or are we being hurtful in our classroom you know are we are we hitting our friends are we spitting things like that so they have visuals of what we our expectations are they take those visuals and then they decide what our classroom rules are so they are a part of our community when it comes to being in the classroom being able to calm themselves and being able to set the expectations for our room the board that you see in the background at the beginning of the year all the students made a representation of themselves as a craft we have what we call a wish you well board so as we come in we have other rituals that we do as well we go out to recess we come by the flags we do our pledge of allegiance we have a little song it's our little classroom song it's called hello jello it has motions and things that they can interact with each other and then we've we learned we pair sign language with that because we do have friends that are nonverbal so they throughout our day we have different signs that we use but we do our weather song in sign language we come in and we talk about who's missing from our classroom and we we choose their person and we put it on the heart and we put our hands on our hearts and we send our love to them we wish them well so that they feel the kids feel like they're still connected even if they're not in the classroom and we we use this as a tool for counting too so we're counting how many friends are we missing and we do that that many times but then we also for good measure we want to make sure that those friends really hear it we do it one more time as loud as we can some other connected pieces that we do our friends are talking about their emotions we have our special magic boards and then we want to make sure that every child feels special on their birthday so we have a special celebration they stand in front of the classroom they hold their board and they um are saying to and we always have a special treat with that so we just want to make sure that they feel safe they feel loved in that classroom with this our final part of conscious discipline is problem solving what can i learn from what happened in the classroom so we have an altercation and with the this is called the time machine it gives them a chance to learn accountability it gives them a chance to learn assertiveness i have the right to tell you that i don't like what you did to me i have a right to tell you that it was hurtful so they use this as a visual they stand on it they wish each other well first they get to the next step they count to three all right i'm ready to talk to you and then the friend that was hurt will tell them i don't like that you hit me it was hurtful and the other friend has the chance to be face to face with this person and they can say you know i'm sorry i shouldn't have done that please forgive me and then they do something like an elbow bump or they'll clap hands and then we go about our day so it is a way for them to be accountable but it's also teaching them empathy it's teaching them that there are consequences for our actions they are being conscious learners and these are just some of the tools that we use we utilize the feelings chart and i actually have kiddos that come in and in the morning they'll go over to it and they'll just they'll change it and they'll be like i'm sad and on the back of it it has a mirror and it's it asks them well how do you want to fix this problem so we talk about our choices it goes along with our udl you know we have a choice they can choose how they want to calm their body down we also utilize this when they're having trouble like at circle say we have a friend that may not be they may have a few wiggles we give them a choice first i will say would you like a chair would you like to sit in your square so we've got that choice piece in there and if they're still having trouble i'll say i notice that you're still having some trouble would you like to go and maybe calm your body down do some breathing techniques to calm your body down and 90 of the time the child will stand up and say yeah i think i can do that and they'll go and they're learning coping skills they're learning how to self-regulate their emotions it's just it's an amazing piece to have in the classroom let's see here our [Music] we would do the conscious discipline we are talking about our next steps we're doing our professional development during our staff meetings conscious discipline 101 is for people who have not had a chance to learn it 201 is something that i'm helping the staff with different techniques different activities that we do within our classroom that other teachers can utilize to help with behavior in their classroom and then we have one more oh okay okay what questions do you have for us [Laughter] besides wanting to do that in my office some days i'm i'm very interested and i'm curious what you share with parents that it is modeled at home or not that is something that i would really like to do that's something that i've also talked to shane about during open house i'm working on a presentation that i can do because when my parents come in they're like how do you deal with discipline in your classroom right right there isn't discipline in the classroom there's ways that we can learn to grow so i want to put together a powerpoint for them to show them how i do it i also have a private facebook page where my parents can see how we utilize our calm down tools how we utilize our time machine how we problem solve and just all the different activities that we do to to promote that safety that love and that connectedness in your classroom okay so do you hear from parents like wow eric is really different today thank you very much yes i have a i have a victory we have a friend in our classroom that she just she came in and she her background was just it was atrocious what she had been what she'd been through and she was only four years old and i just had conference with her mom last week and she was amazed at the difference that she's seen just just her daughter being able to come in and talk you know use her words to express how she feels instead of stomping her feet and she looked at me this morning and i was pretending that i was mad about something i stopped my foot and she's like mrs anderson you don't stomp your feet you use your words so they're making that connection sure sure very nice there are other questions individuals have mr stunner thank you great presentation thank you for bringing this best best practice to the board meeting tonight how did we learn about conscious discipline and and how did you pursue professional development to get to where you are so i had heard about conscious discipline when i came into early childhood six years ago but i was new in my role and i was trying to figure out what i was supposed to do and it took me a little while to get acclimated and finally i realized as i learned more about it again through the book study with dr hack that it was something that we needed something that our our students needed us to come to school every day with skills ready to help them learn and grow and the further that i got into my personal journey the more i thought about individual students that i had worked with and i thought this child could have benefited from that this child could have and the list just kept going on and on i thought this is what we need and so then i shared it with my staff we had an optional book study last year and out of 60 staff members we had 30 staff members participate after school hours so 50 we looked at as a a huge success as we looked at how do we build on that that's where we came up with conscious discipline 101 for those who didn't participate last year and then 201 for those who did participate and we already started discussions about 301 next year would you like sure last year was a pretty weird year how did that learning opportunity work for the 50 of the staff that were interested i mean once we started the book study i realized right away that this was something that we could utilize and that it could help not only our special needs kiddos but also our gen ed kiddos so it was just it was kind of clear-cut it was like you can start with you know start small and then gradually add other things i think it was it was very effective last year we did have a smaller group of students to work with so it kind of gave us a big picture of what it was going to look like on a small scale and then we could only grow and add more things to we gave it kind of gave us the opportunity to add those things as we went along our school year and then we already have that kind of i call it my backpack of knowledge so we already have that in our backpack of knowledge and we could start our year off strong with it and it has made a major difference in behavior and i have i have utilized clip charts befores and class dojo and sticker charts and this is by far the most positive and most effective classroom management that i've ever used in my classroom we i think we mentioned early on about the tie to udl somebody mentioned that it sounds like there are strong ties to pbis as well so consciousness one actually kind of contradicts with tbis but we do a blend so we we still feel the need to acknowledge the positive consciousness one does not support like a child getting a sticker or a piece of candy but we feel like in some situations that is appropriate great other question yes dr bills thank you for your presentation it was fantastic and i'd love to learn about the your early childhood center um the new aba classroom tell me a little bit about that um i know there was someone here yeah if like is that just new this year and then kind of tell me what goes on in that classroom a bit during the day there is a lot that goes on in that classroom so yes that's new this year i'm not really sure where you want me to start so there is i'm a board certified behavior analyst and a licensed mental health counselor my name is angela allen i'm one of the autism coordinators with bcsc so i had this grand idea to start an aba based classroom here at bcsc i saw a few different gaps in our community and felt like we could help to fill those gaps for families and for students coming into bcsc in the early childhood program and also helped to eliminate or decrease behaviors as students got older as well with the early intervention piece of that so the classroom consists of five four students on the spectrum one who is not but we are still providing um that behavioral support to and then five or six typical peers at this point as well it is a full five day program at this point in time there is one teacher in the classroom who is a special teacher as well another board certified behavior analyst who was one of our autism assistants rbts last year who's moved into that position and then two registered behavior technicians so the idea is that we are trying to identify those gaps in their learning to help reduce behaviors a lot of that is communication based so what we see and what our goal is to identify what behaviors they're struggling with that are interfering with their learning really find out where those deficits are in their skills to help support them learning those skills so that we see a reduction in behaviors okay awesome great thank you so much that's a really needed service i think i'm glad that um that you you have all started that there is it at the john is it at the center yes it's a busy bees currently yeah right thank you so much thank you thank you other questions i did have a couple these are probably more general but i'm interested in i know there's a lot of discussion in the news about funding for pre-k what what what our outlook is for accessing i think government extra funds for pre-k and then also i'm wondering about tracking our students if i walked into a typical second grade or third grade classroom what what percentage of those students in that room would have been through a bcsc pre-k program of some sort so um just back to your first question with the the funding we have blended funding so we have what is called on my way pre-k through indiana a family has to qualify through fairly stringent guidelines and if they do they they qualify for free pre-k we also have a full rate that's 160 dollars per week and then a modified rate so if a family meets the free and reduced lunch guidelines they get a discounted rate of 60 dollars we have some free scholarships as well that help families that can't meet some of the other guidelines and then i'm sorry mr general what was the second question it has to do with tracking and our ability to track and say well you know here are the average scores on this test for the kids that had a pre-k experience with us and how it compares to kids that didn't have pre-k with us i think at one point we had started tracking things like that a few years ago i know that when i worked with mr phillips we had a five-year longitudinal study that had been completed that showed that students in pre-k had outperformed peers who had not participated in pre-k i don't know that we've updated that for a while i do know that with our 230 students in pre-k this year that it covers close to about 25 of the anticipated students who will go into kindergarten we typically have a thousand to eleven hundred students who go into kindergarten each year great thank you very much great questions wonderful presentation thank you for doing this for our community thank you for letting us share absolutely thank you mr yates and team uh just a reminder to the board that um that we we had the busy bees program um tonight because that's the building we should have been in uh tonight so as we've made changes and and are holding our board meetings here we are trying to bring back in at least the schools and bring those best practices for you so you can see what's happening out in our abilities and that's our our our order or sequence is using the buildings that we would be otherwise in so thanks again to mr yates and his team for their presentation of this evening indeed you're on dr robert all right i'll hit this uh relatively quickly uh the covet 19 update these maps stay pretty much the same the cdc's one is on the left which just kind of shows everything red the department of health one on the right and we are at a 1.5 or yellow right now and much of the state is is that with one blue one down toward the south uh locally this comes from last wednesday so didn't have the most recent data these this information comes out on mondays and thursdays based on sunday and wednesday's information so this does go back to a release from last thursday 30 40 positive cases on november the 10th 19 hospitalizations that time which is a lower number that number has been going down uh here in the test turnaround time and stay pretty consistent under under one day this is information in terms of just breaking things out by quarters so starting out this year we were doing a lot of comparisons to a year ago particularly given the fact that we a year ago we're in e-learning right now um but as we look at the number of positive cases we ended the friday as we headed into fall break at 515.

all right um kathy do you need to call the meeting to order it all or um mr russo mr russo will do that for you yes okay good evening all i'd like to call the meeting to order at uh 604 pm mr sprang you have the floor sir okay thank you very much um you should have uh the report i'm sorry we didn't send it out friday um you should have gotten it yesterday i hope everyone got it i'm gonna just point to a a couple of the uh i think the important uh statistics in it and um what i'd like to do is um look at the school budget in terms of the number of school months that are gone because most most of our expenses really go over 10 months of the year not 12 and what i point out there is this reports through the end of october and so uh two of our ten months are completed uh with this information and what you can see is uh we've spent 28.6 million dollars of our 139.6 um operating budget and that's uh 20.4 of the total so it's pretty much lined up with uh where we might have expected to be at this point but um a couple of things are starting to show up and and the first one is uh prices and uh we've all heard you know you just have to turn on the news to see what's going on um with general economic conditions uh we we've only really seen some isolated uh sharp increases on different things nothing that would uh represent right now calling uh an alarm but it's something um it's going on and and we're not immune to it so um we'll have to um stay alert uh but but in there uh one of the concerns i i've been developing uh has to do with oil prices uh as you know most people didn't think they'd stay high for this long and they are high we've just started the heating season and so we're going to be watching this very closely if you could in your reports if you look to the i'm going to ask you to point to the fourth page and i'll i'll start numbering them it's the the line item uh individual line items that make up our budget and the page that uh starts with transportation special ed when you go down that page you'll see the line item for fuel for buildings that's our that's our heating oil line we had we've budgeted 273 000 there and uh coincidentally after i prepared this report um i we have a electronic approval process for purchases and i was asked uh to approve a uh purchase order encumbrance for the entire year for our heating oil and it was up um a little close to three hundred and ten thousand dollars as you can see our budget is 273.

I hope you find this presentation informational to you, and you can always consult the web page for more information or contact us if you have any questions. We thank you for watching and being part of this and considering Madison. Remember: "MTA - where learning never stops!" My name is Katie Gullette. I teach kindergarten here at Madison Traditional Academy. What you'll see when you walk into a kindergarten room, are desks all in a row, kids have their own space, their own materials. The curriculum is teacher directed at times. What that means is the students are listening and learning. But don't let that fool you because there are plenty of times we can get down to the carpet or the mat, and we do a more social kind of learning. In the morning. We teach Saxon math, which is a faster paced curriculum. We also have a specific phonics program called Spalding.

STEAM is science, technology, engineering, arts and math. And we integrate that every day here at Camelview. We have wonderful programs. I teach the students to use the computers very creatively. And we also work with the classroom teachers to integrate their science content into my classroom. And we have hands on experiences, activities every day. It's really engaging. It's really fun. I have a very fun environment, and I definitely would recommend our program to any families, any students that want to have hands-on experiences and have a fun learning environment with lots of fun teachers!

We want our students to take risks in their new language that they're learning. And so we're going to encourage them once we've taught them some academic vocabulary and Spanish phrases, words, sentences, that they're going to be using and applying their Spanish in every setting around campus. We are having kids speak at the sentence level instead of just the word level. We know when students can respond and think and answer in complete sentences that they're using more of their language and really understanding what they're saying and taking that risk and using their language in a complete way. Hi, my name is Maria Torres and I'm a kindergarten Spanish teacher here at Madison Heights. And this is my 17th year of teaching kindergarten. In kindergarten, it's very important to start the program because this is where we lay the foundations for our program. And we do that through our content area that we do science, social studies, and we're teaching them all in Spanish.

Thank you so much for joining us. I am Mrs. Ewald, I teach the art class here at Rose Lane. At Madison Rose Lane. Our signature program is the visual and performing arts. And so that means that we offer arts, music, dance, P.E. and theater to all of our students, K-4. I work with the other teachers to integrate as many of the programs as we can. We try to have them doing something in music that we can then correlate to in dance class, and then they can try and do some more performing with that in the theater room and add the artistic background to that in the art room. So we're really building all of the program together as we go. In the art room, we try to have a tab studio, meaning that the students are focused on learning how to use different materials using new techniques with them.

And finally, we ask students to focus on taking action from their learning, whether that's just explaining to another person what they've learned, or it's doing something to create some change in our community or the world around us. Simis is so proud of our staff and students and our families, and we're excited to give you just a small glimpse into our school. Welcome! Hi, I'm Melissa Powers and I'm the IB Coordinator here at Madison Simis and at Simis, every student is an IB student. We offer the PYP, Primary Years Programme, for every student grades kindergarten through fourth grade. PYP is an inquiry-based, student-centered approach to learning where we encourage our students to be critical thinkers, to wonder, ask questions, then research to find their answers. We also want our students to take agency by taking action from their learning. We also encourage our students to be globally minded thinkers as they study the world around them.

we are getting sick of this district hyper-sexualizing the curriculum we are getting sick of teachers having free reign to give their personal opinions and present whatever curriculum and material they wish these teachers have failed the children miserably these are only three of a growing list of teachers that are making the children uncomfortable these teachers are being empowered by the district to pollute the students minds as long as they label it equity this is unacceptable we will not stand by while our children continue to be uncomfortable with what's happening under this roof i have been in education for 23 years and i can assure you i know what constitutes acceptable teaching practices and acceptable curriculum and these are not how do you think we know about these incidences because our kids are telling us we the parents have taught our children the difference between right and wrong and they know this is wrong and they are telling us daily if you think i'm going to stop paying attention to what's happening in the classroom let me be clear i'm not going anywhere i won't be canceled because i am not for sale thank you and do you want us to keep your speech because we do want to have a copy of yourself the top of this picture it'll be part of the minutes thank you very much any other comments and it's your way to contact you on the no it's um i can write it down if you do have my email from the email i sent you guys a couple weeks ago and i can write it down i just have one comment this book was banned in 2014 by the american library association and it is one of the most banned books of all the schools and who are you i'm another parent that's a child that's in the same class reading the same books have any of you read these books just do we have your name for the record stacey and your last name horowitz h-o-r-w-i-t and what villager from lincolnshire thank you okay okay any other comments okay um nicholas you're up well before i start on the presentation the holidays came early just a little bit of school board appreciation for you all i know last year michaela got you all mugs with calligraphy online oh thank you [Music] wow this is really nice thank you thank you so much thank you very much [Laughter] it doesn't get you out of giving you giving us one of your reports right okay so welcome to the school board presentation november 15th okay so we have student council really proud of the boomerang i took on instagram so this was this leads directly into my first point about can collections for student council so obviously it's the season season of service season of giving which is kind of spearheaded by national honor society with giveathon but they also do maybe food item drives as well as food drives can collections so student council is helping them in that endeavor so this weekend we were outside in front of sunset long grove from 10 to 2 p.m and i don't know how these members are that enthused in 35 degree weather i certainly wasn't but um that's we posted that on our instagram we just have a quick little sign and then we were both at both entrances and it was a huge success i think that was the most cans we've ever collected in my three years of doing can collections uh the next weekend we're in front of mariano's um in buffalo grove so make sure to stop by and donate some cans and then my next point is student congress so today we have an activity period so during activity period uh myself another officer and two of our newborn members abby sherig and kaden gasvini went to the west staff dining hall and we took petitions um and i felt like this was a really successful student congress because our pastor in congress um there was an issue with the forum but we corrected that today so hopefully eboard will vote on all the new petitions this thursday and then one thing we pledged as a council is to make the all the petitions public and kind of just make sure that everyone knows where the petitions are in the passing process so that was really important for our steps and that um and then last thing just very student council um so we figured out that we were supposed to take yearbook photos about a week ago but we don't really have any student council shirts yet so that's something we're doing within our organization and then before i move on i know you guys talk a lot about budget stuff so whoever approved canva pro for students good job okay next up we have freshman mentor program so kind of a bear slide but lots to go through so recruitment week that's starting this week this friday all during all lunch periods the freshman mentor program will be hosting informational meetings with a bunch of men with a bunch of mentors in the recital hall so this is for all prospective mentors so both sophomores and juniors are invited to come and this is super important so kind of for promotion fmp's asking mentors to post this on their instagram stories kind of why i joined fmp and then also just the information for the meeting and i think especially with last year social media has been such has become such an integral part to club's promotion and kind of boosting engagement with the full school so that's super awesome that they're doing that and then also they had a critically acclaimed ad for um a dancing ad by mr kanine which if you get approval from mr kanin you know your ads pretty good so they um remixed levitating by duolifa and it was an amazing ad it looked a lot like high school musical um then the next thing up is kind of more of a fun point so with leadership lunches those are meetings we have monthly as mentors and the main point with leadership lunches is the democracy i know i've weirdly learned a lot about um approved vendors for students then so lou malnati's has always been providing leadership the food at leadership lunches but we had pasta this week so that's kind of a fun update for freshman mentor program because we had um the sos program and then we also had leadership lunch on one week so we had luma nadi's like three days of the week which i'm sick of it so it's kind of fun to have and then the last thing on here um i think last week dr haney presented in the performing arts for um presented in the performing arts center um just about speak up protocol which is a lesson on bias unfortunately i wasn't there but luckily i got to have the same presentation done at slack um so i still kind of got that and it was a really i feel like it was a really important presentation when i talked with miss berger she said that he did an amazing job so i'm just going through i think the steps are interrupt um question educate and echo so those are kind of the four steps and i'll go more in depth about that later okay next up we have national honor society so not a whole lot of diversity within the slide because they're definitely super focused on giveathon so that's kind of an annual event and i kind of hinted at it last presentation so we're now in the selling phase and that's kind of coming to a close with the ending on november 30th so a bunch of um students are selling for each of their classes i'm doing one for my literature class sixth period so i'm working with several other students and some popular items i've seen this year are um arnold palmer's lots of drinks celsius you guys know celsius energy drinks those are super popular this year and also capri suns and stuff like that i think my sophomore freshman year the gushers were super popular so it's always interesting to see the different trends then collection day so um nhs eboard just sent out the sign up for collection day so nhs members really enjoy collection day because you're bringing all the gifts to the different sites and i think the members are super excited because it's a field trip and you get to miss a little bit of school and then the last point we have here um is advisory collections so this kind of ties in with freshman mentor program so during committee meetings nhs has been they had a box day which just means they're assembling cardboard boxes to put in each advisory and advisories compete to see who can collect the most mac and cheese boxes um and they also have to build a nice structure with it and the prize is yet to be determined okay moving on to the second last slide we have slack recap so um this goes back to um the speak up protocol like i said interrupt question echo and educate so throughout slack the bulk of the meeting was just going through um going through examples of stuff that has actually been said at stevenson which i was found shocking um and a little bit interesting as well just to see how people would respond and kind of just making sure that um the leaders at stevenson are trying to create a culture where every where we're trying to eliminate bias so that was a lot about the speak-up protocol um and then towards the end of slack we had um actually towards the beginning we had a finals discussion so i think this was one of my favorite slack meetings that i've been to because it really captured the essence of advisory within slack so mr gobble kind of talked about a lot of finals experiences and how finals usually in the past have ended up hurting students grades more than helping them so kind of just the evolution of finals because i definitely seen from my freshman year taking a 90-minute math final on the whole semester to last year online just doing the one target i needed to kind of show growth within evr so i think it's definitely beneficial and some of the benefits to what we have for finals now have been included um getting experience for the ap tests which i remember we did at the end of first semester in ap euro and then also just getting to bond with teachers i think in person school last year definitely was more intimate regardless but i think with the last couple of finals days if you didn't have a lot to do you could really talk with your teacher and build bonds which i thought was super helpful because now they're some of my favorite people i say hi to them in the hallway every day and they're recommending me to go to college so and then um the last thing we did in slack was question time so this was really just a q a hosted by mr gobble who i saw walking out he didn't want to see my presentation his daughter is getting an award tonight so i'll let him slide yeah just this one time but some things we talked about were odyssey logistics because a lot of music groups like triumph were represented and i know fine arts is super popular at stevenson so a lot of students were disappointed to lose odyssey this year you know it was kind of more optional it's just not necessarily built into our schedule we talked about ebr and kind of like efficacy grades and how that ties in with homework um the process for new classes mental health days which i think the illinois congress just passed for next year so that's a wide variety of topics which i thought was super important to discuss and some of them were brought up at student congress so kind of some overlap between those okay the last thing my favorite slide so first thing i want to talk about was senior nights so obviously at football games i've seen palms cheer um soccer band swim swim and dive field hockey et cetera like all the sports are really having your senior nights and it has me thinking about my senior night for tennis next semester so kind of a sad moment but obviously very happy for all my friends and everyone involved for senior night and i know it's a senior night but the whole team is really impacted because what i've learned from being on tennis is you know teams are never really the same from year to year and my freshman year team was especially um it was super special to me so definitely a lot of love for all the seniors regardless of what grade you're in on sports um then the next thing is world's fair so sadly this was the weekend that i got super super super sick so i couldn't go but um ten thousand dollars were raised and all the booths were held in the morning and then the performances were later on and the student council treasurer brianna was um lucky enough to go to one of the performances and provide me with this picture so shout out to her um then the next thing i wanted to talk about was november 1st so i'm often asked by mr weisberg what's kind of the vibe and feeling amongst the student body so i think um i know november 1st has passed and you think a lot of students are very relieved but i think that was kind of very short-lived because a lot of us have to are really gearing up for the end of the semester now and making sure that we show colleges the best all the best work we can for regular decision applications and then also those deadlines are fairly imminent so kind of just doesn't end but it's okay and then also military week so um this was actually a collaboration between political action club and students helping soldiers so they handed out poppy flowers at the beginning of the day kind of like what um the statesman does with their newspapers so that was super cool and mr canadian is obviously the leader of political action club so i see a lot of stuff so i saw a lot of the puppy flowers in his class and then one thing with this picture this was um signing day last week so i was lucky enough to go my friend nora kowalski was committing to miami ohio so i had to show up and support her obviously a lot of my peers were also signing as well so it's super proud moment for me just to know these people who are going to all these amazing schools and really achieved greatness athletically and then also um two other things or one other thing was um spongebob the musical is happening this weekend which i'm super super super excited for because i remember going to the play my freshman year and that was really really amazing so i'm excited to see what they do and a lot of my friends who are seniors have leading roles so we'll be excited to see all their performances and i think that's running the 19th 20th and 21st but don't quote me on that okay that's about it any questions no uh as always it's a fact-filled presentation and we love the way you do it thank you so much thank you any any i love my ppa planner so that's where i really got the inspiration from we really appreciate it thank you so much thank you thank you no just a comment i i appreciate having you here and i like watching you play tennis too but i'm really not curious as much about the vibe as i am that you are a unique uh window into a real-time unfiltered uh response of how the kids are feeling and i trust your judgment and your view thank you oh also one thing i forgot to mention um also daylight savings time obviously puts a damper on the mood so that's another thing to add to the student body but i think that's for everyone [Music] there were two like harvard professors they were like we need to ban um daylight savings time syntax said it over thank you so much oh he's great all right well um so oh wait can i go on sorry please what's up so i'm just so excited uh to have our uh members of our student services division here uh for our annual um update on our student surveys uh we did not get a chance to have you present last year because of covid and all that kind of craziness so we're very excited to have you back um i don't know did you break presents for the board did you want to start with president some 20s in my wallet i all right well we'll worry about that later okay so i'll sarah you want to introduce your team here not that they need any introduction exactly they're world-renowned um so again we're truly we're thrilled always for the opportunity to connect with you all and talk a little bit about the work we've done to support our students for the last year we have for how many years in a row now patty is this your 20 this is my 26th but i missed my 25th okay so her 25th year of sharing this information with um with you all um and we like to say we're the original student voice survey so patty will ship like before panorama was even a thing um paddy will share that information and then super excited this year to be joined by sarah francis who um as you all know is our assistant director of student services and has made so many wonderful um so many of the things that we'll describe possible um in our division over the last year and a half awesome do you feel adequately introduced i do okay do i have to keep my mask on okay all right so student satisfaction surveys this is what we're going to be talking about today one second give me one second i'm sorry okay thank you um so the the og student voice survey we're going to talk about some student services information some school-wide information and then we got ramp and we'll tell you about what that is we have some lessons that we've learned during the pandemic that are continuing on and then our student services mental health wellness focus are what we're going to be talking about today so starting with our survey procedures it was a little different last year we did our surveys over zoom during course selection we had our 12th graders do our um our exit survey during their hybrid english classes in april and may and then our one year and five year surveys were now actually instead of phone calling all the people that we can get we are partnering partnering with the alumni association and sending out a google survey to all the alumni that we have and um our one year survey for the class of 2020 we had 147 respondents and then for the five year survey for the class of 2016 we had 148 respondents so it's nice it's about 50 more students 50 more students correct yes so let's talk about the student services information first so um one of the things that you probably knew but maybe not so go over it a little bit is that um on a normal year students come into our offices and let us know how they're feeling they tell us over email but a lot of the times they're just walking into our offices and when we were hybrid they couldn't do that so we really had to think differently about how the students were able to contact us and how we were able to contact them so some of the things that we did during hybrid learning we had zoom offices office hours every day at the beginning of the year we had weekly office hours for the rest of the year we had calendly links where students could get direct access to our calendars to make appointments with us we had canvas pages for every grade level we still continued our weekly advisory visits we had bitmoji pages for the freshmen do people know what bitmoji pages are i've ever seen a bitmoji face i'll show you really quickly what a bitmoji page is um so it was a little page that looked like this and i was on there and we had miss wright and miss fenton on there because they were my advisory teachers and just information about my family and things and just stuff that the students could connect to um when i was seeing them on zoom so we did that we also had a de-stress hub for stevenson where students could go through and have books and different arts and crafts that they could do etc so we really tried to see how we could help the students in virtual environments we did our pulse survey and we'll talk a little bit about that um later we did individualized course selections via zoom we had remote college and career programming we had group supports via zoom and then we did some pandemic specific support groups so all these things we were hoping that students would feel like we were available to them that we were connected to them and we were hoping that our numbers would not go down a lot on our student surveys really and so what happened was actually we got the highest numbers that we've ever had in terms of accessibility a hundred percent virtually a hundred 100 i think so less than six students said that we were not accessible um academic counseling our helpfulness in that was 100 of students agreed our friendliness and approachability again 100 percent and then asking the students do you feel your counselor knows you 97 percent of them agreed to that and then um if students were comfortable discussing personal or non-academic concerns with us 94 of them agreed that yes they were comfortable doing that so when we talk about this being the original student voice survey like what was the change so why did we even do this and i think probably terry was the only person around when i was giving this conversation um 25 years ago but this is where it started so would we ask them in 1997 if they were comfortable talking to their counselors about personal issues 74 of them said yes and now we're at 94 it's been a while since 1997 but this is where we started and this is where we've gotten to and even in a year of a pandemic we were still able to continue with that belonging with that accessibility so we're very proud of that fact so let's talk about some school-wide information first of all the connectedness or the belongingness of students to their stat the staff members um this is a question we ask every year how name the people who had a positive impact on your high school experience we asked the class of 2021 and they named 569 people this was a class that did not have um school for a year and and a little and still came up with 569 separate staff members the year before was the only year that was higher than that which was 591.

[Applause] thank you 5.1 public comment on behalf of the board of education i would like to thank the public for attending tonight's meeting we value the feedback we receive from our residents and encourage everyone to take an active interest in their public school system residents interested in speaking to the board this evening are asked to have completed a comment card and presented it to the secretary to the board when the secretary calls your name i ask that you come to the microphone state your name for the public record and provide your feedback please note that comments are limited to 3 minutes per person for a total of 30 minutes no discussion of personnel matters or responses to questions are permitted the board does not participate in discussion during public comment if your questions or concerns require follow-up a member of the administration will reach out through the contact information provided on the comment card thank you dallas shivari so you all can look at it while i speak please can you hear me okay yeah my name is dallas shabari 308 board members you are now holding a piece of artwork that was drawn by a former 308 student this was excuse me this was a college assignment that was recently completed by a 308 graduate student who carries these memoirs forward into her pre-adulthood the student did reach out while being bullied and nothing ever was done worse still some administration observed the bullying first hand and looked away this is why i'm here tonight i'm speaking out for these students recently a 308 mother reached out to the community asking other parents if their child had ever been bullied with no type of communication to the parent after the incident had occurred as a three-weight mom i am appalled there are several response i'm sorry i'm a little nervous so please excuse me i was appalled that there were several responses from other parents who were never notified by the school this is absolutely unacceptable the students of this district need to feel that school is a safe place multiple quarantines ridiculous mass mandates and the so-called online learning that students continue to endure last year to now leaves a population of students silently struggling in less than three months the chicagoland area has lost 10 children to suicide 10.
