>> [clears throat] >> And the girls did everything. They were amazing. Um in January it's it was time to start preparing our eighth graders for their transition to high school. So, Yuba City High School came out, their counselors, and they did like a registration presentation for our eighth graders and they got to register, pick their classes, all of that good stuff. Um our middle school theater class um did a mock trial and they invited members of the community to come and be on the jury. Um I don't think she had it in her plans. It was kind of one of those go with the flow kind of things. A student's little squishy ball exploded one day, stuff went all over. So, they held a mock trial to see who was at fault. Um and just another note, they are preparing for their spring show at the end of the year.
Hearing none. So, obviously there is some challenges with this, right? And what is um Obviously there's a What is the threshold in beginning a new pathway? What what kind of class and what does it take? And do you have a number of students anticipated? Because obviously you can't be everything to everyone. >> Everyone, yeah. So that I mean part of the question is what kind of pathway are we talking about? Is this a concentration? Is it, for example, a micro-credential which could then just be created around a single course? Is it a degree of some kind? And we already have a Hawaiian language degree, so I'm guessing the pathway would be somewhere under a degree path. Um we at the university have lots of lots of pieces to the puzzle about asking for or creating new degrees. As you know, we don't want to have a Oh, I can't say that word.
We will now rise for our pledge of allegiance and a moment of silence. Tonight's moment of silence, we honor the tragic loss of a high school student who passed away in an accident on Arizona Avenue. Our board extends its heart heartfelt condolences and support to the family, friends, teachers, and staff impacted during this incredibly difficult time. To the flag of the United States of America and to the stands and justice for all. Thank you everyone. You can have a seat. So tonight we will start per usual on item number four which is our report and information. I'm very proud to introduce um two of our student body presidents that are here to report on their high schools tonight. Noting that this is their last presentation and report with us. We're first going to hear from ACP High School's uh student body president, Aisha. >> It's a pleasure to be here tonight.
So, so do you guys have any comments? >> One. >> Go ahead. >> So, just to make sure we are going to get a list of all the stuff and then we say yes, no, yes, no, yes, no. And then we give that to you and then you guys take that list from there. Correct. >> So, I will seek some clarity on that because that was the direction I was going. I hear possibly a different direction. >> So it would be like giving them this list, >> right? So giving you the list is the easy part. I can share with you >> what's connected to the adoption, what was historically approved. >> Um my intent was to come to you in May and say, "Okay, board, here's five options. We can approve all of the above. We can approve just these. We can approve what you want minus five.
Um they will have an impact, right? I mean, we can talk about a Warren teacher and while maybe some classes um class size is going to increase, um I know Pete would would love to have 30 teachers at the Warren School. Kate would love to have 30 classroom teachers at the Mendes School. So, class sizes might go from they would probably go from like 23 down to 22 or 21. And somebody may say that's not significant. It's significant enough for us, >> but can we survive? And with the es and flows of our enrollment, we can. Um, and this is sort of setting that course for us to do so. Um, you know, I we we've had conversations here. Um, and we actually had did a um a uh an exercise uh at uh an admin meeting uh with regard to these positions and rank ordering them, if you will.
And just a nice um acknowledgement today. I came in before this meeting. I spent a little over an hour with Coach Kashki who is our athletic director walking around over at the fields at the high school. They had a boys varsity baseball game and a girls varsity softball game going on. And when I left they were both winning. So hopefully they did a nice job and and what an finally a many of you know a nice day to somewhat be outside with the weather only getting better on that. So those are some of the brief things. Thank you chair. >> Okay. Any any other questions? Any more questions given that? >> Sweet. Uh seeing none, moving on to item eight, our consent agenda. Um, I'll look now for is are there any items that a member would wish to remove? Member Childs. >> So, from item A, I did not see the minutes for March 25th in our packet and I also did not see item B in our packet.

I mean I don't I and that's that's what I don't know the answer to that. That's why I wanted to make sure we put all of this in like a very refined document to just say these are all of the issues. Please, you know, let us know if this looks okay. Good. Um and and like I said, Paul Checko has been very responsive. Some of the things are very very new, like the roof leak and the water under that like some of some just came up in the last couple of weeks. Um others like the CO2 levels had started in December, and they were still I will say um we experimented. Um Dr. P has been uh he's almost an expert in these uh sensors, and the the the data you can get from uh every classroom, the humidity and the temperatures and the CO2 levels, um and we found that the times of when some of the levels creep above 800 um PPMs, which is like the, you know, outside air is about 400 400 to 500.
So, um just if anybody wants to come, they've worked really hard on that. So, in February we celebrated our hundred hundredth day of school. Um the students made hundredth day projects. Fourth grade was stacking a hundred cups. So, it was a really fun um celebration of being in school for a hundred days. I kind of put these two together, but we at Gastineau love to go, you know, all out and celebrate everything. So, we had fun on Valentine's Day as well as St. Patrick's Day. Um if you can tell from some of the pictures in our primary classes, the little leprechaun came through and made a little bit of a mess and then the kids got to clean it up. So, that was really neat. Um and then I just wanted to give a shout-out to Miss Bethany in the kitchen. Um if you can see in the picture there in the middle on St.
Proliferation of of degrees across the system without some level of control. So if it were to be some degree, it would go through much larger scrutiny than if it was a concentration or a micro-credential. Is there um some kind of threshold like the number of students anticipated that you would service because that you wouldn't necessarily teach Russian Well, we did teach Russian Right, we did. two students at one point enrolled, which then was a cost effective and it prevented other types of new new types of pathways and degrees in in the future. So, So, what is the end? So, we do we do report to the board annually on programs with a small number of graduates. We also scrutinize at the course level courses with a small number of students. In this case, I did look up the last time Hawaiian studies or Hawaiian 453 was taught, which is the Alalo Niau class.
My name is Aisha Mood and I'm student body president of ACP High School. I'm so grateful to be back to present everything our school has accomplished during the third quarter and the final quarter of our school year. To begin, our student government has been coordinating and sponsoring various successful activities. Last time I was here, we were in the midst of a random acts of kindness week, which was themed You've Got a Friend in Me following a fan favorite, Toy Story. Our council had decorated the entire campus based on this theme in order to help bring the student body into the spirit of Rack Week. We kicked off the week on Friday before the morning with assembly on our football field where we acknowledged students and staff who went above and beyond on our campus, played exciting games that had great crowd involvement, all while setting the tone for the upcoming days.
I mean, we can approve five of each grade. I we could have 19 different iterations of that. Um, but if you want to drive that instead, that's fine, too. But the first step is just to give you the here's what's in HMH that you already approved in May. Here's the enrichment list that is sitting currently, to use my old terminology, behind the fence. We didn't bring it out. We didn't buy it, but we could. >> Um, and then here's the historically approved. It has nothing to do with this. >> I would like you to do. >> So, we will I will give you that. My question is, do you want some suggestions on what to do with that comprehensive list or do you want me just to bring that next month? >> Sure. >> Um, I think that we need to be really careful. I think my feeling is is that we are that we're representing the entire public, not just certain people.
uh like hey if if the world uh said hey Jim you could pick something off from here um it has the world has not said that but um if we could we recognize the fact as a group to be honest our our number one uh position was the special ed coordinator position and you all voice that here um because it not only has an impact on students and families it has an impact across all four buildings now right or five buildings and Britney's office herself having to the the workload that we're putting our our team under is enormous. Um, and we've always done that in this district and it's frustrating. Um, but it's also, you know, what you do in tough times. We make hard decisions and that was that was a hard decision for us. So, but these are the positions and we've talked about it.
So, at least I didn't see them in the drive and I looked for them. >> If I may, Chair. >> Yep. >> You do not have March 25th. we when we created the agenda that somewhat of a placeholder in case we had those those are still being um produced I guess you would say in that one and yes it would be appropriate if you would pull out B and then I could explain that after. >> All right. So the new consent agenda is item A with the exception of March 25th and no item B. We'll pull that out. Are there any other items that members would wish to consider separately? Okay, seeing none, I make a motion to approve the consent agenda as presented. All right, we've got a motion and a second. >> I need to I don't think we do discussion on a consent agenda.
So, at least I didn't see them in the drive and I looked for them. >> If I may, Chair. >> Yep. >> You do not have uh March 25th. we when we created the agenda that somewhat of a placeholder in case we had those those are still being um produced I guess you would say in that one and yes it would be appropriate if you would pull out B and then I could explain that after. >> All right so the new consent agenda is item A with the exception of March 25th and no item B. We'll pull that up. Are there any other items that members would wish to consider separately? Okay, seeing none, I make a motion to approve the consent agenda as presented. All right, we've got a motion and a second. >> I need to I don't think we do discussion on a consent agenda.
So, when if it goes above 800, it's usually when [snorts] students are lining up to leave the classroom for lunch or for a special, and all the students are sort of gathered by that sensor. And they're breathing it, right? And so, and then and then they leave, and you see you see the trends literally come down, and you time it with the schedules of the classrooms, and it's um it's quite interesting. So, Yeah, and with the leak, cuz I know that we had an issue with a different AC unit or rail or something, and this was months back. Is this the one that's leaking now, or this is a different unit? No, and it's not it's not that one of the units is leaking. I think there is um water getting underneath There's like um there's almost like a a sill between where the unit is placed on the roof and the roof itself itself.
Patrick's Day, everything she served was green. It was really fun. Um so, Mrs. Peterson and Mrs. Steel celebrated Chinese New Year. So, Mrs. Steel's fourth grade and Mrs. Peterson's kindergarten are big buddies. They meet once a week and so they got to have a little Chinese New Year's feast together and then they put on this wonderful um parade for the whole school. >> [clears throat] >> We also celebrated Dr. Seuss Day at the beginning of March. Um so, as you can see up there in the corner, Cat in the Hat showed up. They served everybody popcorn. Um we had reading all day. That was some of our big kids reading with our little kids. Pretty fun event. Our fifth graders did um state presentations. So, they picked a state, researched it, and then um did a presentation that the school got to walk through and read their boards, ask them questions.
There were five students enrolled in that. That was spring 2024. We wouldn't offer a course like that every year simply because it's not going to draw a huge number of students, but for a course like this because it does serve a very specialized need, we also wouldn't want to preclude it being offered. So, we would look to making sure the enrollments course >> a course is it one year, one semester? >> One semester. >> And that that's it? Yes, that would be it. And that you think satisfy it this pathway? We could well, if there was an interest in creating a credential around it, it would be something like a micro-credential where you would say I have uh this specialized credential that looks specifically at Alalo Niau. >> what kind of time commitment would that entail cost commitment? Um I would imagine it could be built around the the existing course that's on the books already, but you know, then it's a matter of if there's interest and whether students would take the course.
The week was full of lunchtime events, student bonding, and sending kindness where students are able to anonymously send kind notes to students and staff, which helps promote a connected and compassionate community. We also held a fundraising event where student students had volunteered to shave their heads in order to collect funds for the Special Olympics. Overall, the entire week was a success and it was full of music, collaboration, and kindness. Our student government had also spent a morning at ACP Middle School throwing a pep assembly for our incoming freshman/ the eighth grade class. We wanted to replicate the feeling of a high school pep assembly so the students could see what's in store for them. We have performances from our spirit line, dance team, theater company, and our marching band. The kids really enjoyed these acts along with the games, and we can't wait to see them again for our freshman barbecue welcome in May.
So, as a parent, if there's a book that's being read and somebody else doesn't think it's appropriate, that's my decision. And if my child wants to read it, fine. If I don't want my child to read it, fine, too. Um, I think that banning any book, banning books is not okay. I mean, that's just my opinion. So, I think that you give us the list, then we approve it as a board. And I think we also need to be very mindful and careful. Um, one of the books that was in what was the top tier beyond the most restricted beyond the fence. >> Uh, yeah, the most restricted was our behind the wall ones. >> So, anyone that took the time to research some of those novels that were included in the curriculum that we recently passed. Um, there is one book that is very descriptive about what a gentleman would like to do to a woman's nether regions and it uses the cword.
