march 18 2021 noticed in the coast star 74th the date time and place for the meetings similar notice has been placed in the town hall the brielle school website and the borough are kept being notified can you please call the role mr baker kimbrosio here this is [Music] mr walker [Music] of the october 22nd 2021 regular public meeting and the second dave thank you mr banker yes ambrosia yes [Music] yes so i'm going to ask you to join me up front and also coach d i don't think we haven't tried it [Music] before um i want to thank everyone for being here with us tonight and but most importantly tonight's board meeting is all about recognizing our voice soccer team and so i want to congratulate you as players your coach and all the hard work you put in to this season to go undefeated is a pretty high timeline and our boys soccer team and even our girls have all the other schools in the area always saying brielle is the team you have to be and when you're number one year after year it's really hard to say it because people come into our time or are you going to their town saying we have to keep our record up and the other team always wants to be the people who are number one this year as players i went to several of your games i have to say i was always impressed with your sportsmanship with your uh sportsmanship is the most important character on and off the field how you treated other players uh what referees would say to me or to your coach after a game those are the important things it's not about winning but going undefeated says a lot about them as players and you know you help spirit in our school kids look up to you because you wear your uniforms proudly on the day of the games and just to have a repeated season and that in the final games i thought were very tough those teams came in really wanting to win and you didn't let it happen and you didn't give up and you worked together as a team so i'm very very impressed with that i know your coach is going to say more but i'm very impressed with what you did as a team this night is about you but i also want to talk about the other teams in the fall i'll start with our cross-country team our girls took second place overall and our boys took third place over and they competed against a lot of group schools and they did so well our girls soccer team this year had a few ups and downs their first loss this season their coach ms cornham said to me we had 74 wins in a row it was their first loss after 74 wins people always wanted people that's team those girls came back and beat the undefeated team of same captains they were so happy to do that because you know that everyone wanted to be you so the girls soccer team had the same experience beat an undefeated team made it to the championship double overtime kind of ticket so don't get me started make penalty kicks and everybody knows what happened there our girls field hockey team went undefeated the whole season just like you undefeated they never lost and went into the championship game and with minutes left to go they lost but they still were the great sportsmanship just like you were and so you said a lot about our school your character your sportsmanship how you play on what the field how do you actually school matter so much and so boys i really want to thank you for a great season uh it really helped the spirit in our school but i'm very impressed with your character your leadership and what you did for our style program coach do you want to say thank you um first of all i just want to thank the administration and for working so hard to get athletics back on the field this was a big deal for all the students and for the town and all the kids in school just seeing the boys and the girls going out and competing and coming out and supporting your school spirit whatnot so that was a really great you can see um i want to thank my assistant volunteer assistant logan by danzo [Applause] turns out that logan i believe is the first game player to win a championship as a player and a coach about that and um to the parents everybody who's coming out all your support the whole season getting the voice to practice picking them up you guys are the heroes what the boys are doing get your children wrong signs to get them and making sure they have everything sorry i can't thank you know with all the communication and then of course the boys for their hard work and dedication throughout the year um one of the things that i pride myself on as a teacher or coach is to make sure that you are doing your homework you're not getting yourself in trouble you're following the rules that you have in school and you know student comes before halfway always and when you go to high school and one day maybe college you will also be able to carry those you know characteristics forward you know just to make sure that you could find them and that's that's the most important wins and losses but i do want to say one more thing that some of you might not know as the season is going on just how good these guys were and you have to be lucky you have to work hard all these things have to fall into place we told these guys we're always one spring angle away from the 500 season right so one of the things that they were able to accomplish they didn't really realize it for 650 minutes of soccer 13 games a trail of four minutes that's unbelievable so great job by you guys again and uh 8th graders good luck throughout the rest of the year do your homework in action and cemeteries and sixth graders uh see our tryouts in september right good job thank you [Laughter] [Music] and [Applause] no [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] dylan [Applause] liverpool [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] let's tell me [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and there we go [Music] [Applause] [Music] had it on our website but congratulations boys were very proud of me and so um i'm so glad the parents came out and they really do a great job supporting our school and our programs you can stay for tonight's ordinary we should be done around 10 30.

the record august 30th 2021 this is an official meeting so take a roll qualifying mr roman gina mrs abreu here mr capano here mrs fredo here mr garcigan here dr pantaliano here mr raincourt here mr russo mr shelley here mr tarabakian and mr yanuji okay mr roman gina okay we do have a guest with us tonight but before um we hear from dr severance i'd like to just go over a couple of items uh regarding some of the happenings in our schools uh the week of october 25th through 29th i want to thank all of our staff and teachers who celebrated red ribbon week across the district november 10th last week uh we had a successful parent workshop for all pre-k and k parents across the district that workshop was presented by julie jewish family services the main topic that night was parenting and um having your child pre-k in kindergarten transitioning to uh school which a lot of them were not at last year the workshop went very well i do want to make mention that on december 13th which is a monday night we're having another parent workshop at 6 30 at the high school uh that's gonna address mental health mental health concerns uh of students um that's going to be open to all parents across the district and we will be uh posting some information regarding that workshop on our website in the near future uh also want to make mention that on november 30th and december 1st we're going to have in instant decision day at the high school we have about 20 colleges that are committed as they have in the past come to cliffside park high school uh students will then have the opportunity to um have instant decisions in terms of uh picking a particular college on that day and i'll let the board know at that time how many students actually took advantage of that opportunity i do want to make mention that i spoke to mr pinto our high school principal who gave me some information regarding our ap classes at the high school uh in 2015 we had 35 students at that time taking ap classes uh since then we've expanded the number of offerings and for 2020 i'm happy to report we had 136 students who were taking advantage of our ap classes once we get some information on this year 2021 i will share that with uh with the board uh you know students are scored on a basis of five to one and i'm happy to say that last year 85 students uh scored a three or higher which is um a pretty good accomplishment over over the years we didn't have as many students scoring as high but over the last couple of years the staff and mr pinto and the administration at the high school have made a an effort to address that particular area which is ap classes i do want to take a moment to congratulate all of our students athletes for the fall sports and our coaches you know that our soccer team went a pretty long way our football team had a successful season uh this was the first year that we were we're in cooperation with ridgefield and we look forward to more successful years and cross country and uh all of the students that participated as they do every year uh did a great job i also want to make mention that this coming saturday november 20th we have a robotics competition normally it's held at the high school this year it's held in the middle school because of the high school construction we're going to have about 20 um schools that are going to come on saturday at different times and participate in the competition uh mr capizzi our middle school teacher science teacher is now heading the robotics uh program and uh he's put together a nice program for saturday and again if you have time during the day you might want to stop into the middle school uh they're going to be competing all day long but uh it should be a nice event for our students to take part okay uh any questions at this time from the board uh i believe the robotics starts at 9 00 a.m yeah and it usually runs till around four or five okay so at this time um i'd like to turn the program over to dr severance who's gonna talk a little bit about um a little bit about these achievements in your district i i created a very brief um powerpoint that i'm going to try to open let's see if we can do that here and from the beginning can you see that yes sometimes the technology gods smile upon me so uh so we're going to just kind of run down quickly yet comprehensively the strategic planning approach that we will be doing specifically for the cliffside park school district so why do a strategic plan well it's to create a plan that will guide cliffside park school district's efforts to achieve the mission vision and goals of the community and how will we do that well it involves a series of steps that's really based on a comprehensive needs assessment so i will begin by uh working with the superintendent and his designees to identify and analyze data sources um great examples of that would be the ap courses and performance that that was shared just a few moments ago so we'll start by taking a look at the student achievement data at growth and whatever data is deemed uh interesting uh relevant and worthy to analyze as part of the strategic planning process then it really gets interesting we're going to host in-person input sessions i think this is really what lies at the heart of the strategic planning process it's to elevate the voices of the members of the school community so of course board of education members have a significant role in sharing their voice sharing their aspirations their intentions for what they want to see happen what they want to see accomplished by the cliffside park school district we're also going to host community forums where caregivers and community members can come we can do this in the day we can do it in the evening we can host multiple sessions at the convenience of of the community we may even be able to um have opportunities for people who speak um spanish participate in those if that's deemed uh important or necessary of course we'll also have our faculty and staff engage in these interview um rather input sessions and the students i think this is where um where it really makes a difference when when the process that i use really engages students in a powerful and meaningful way i'll show you more about that in a moment we will also design and conduct a district-wide survey so that we can hear from people across the district we will then aggregate and analyze the feedback the input and the findings and present those results to the board of education in may so for cliffside park in particular it's going to require quite a bit of outreach i will be going to school 3 4 5 6 middle school and high school and talking to student representatives from grades 2 or 3 up through 12.

well time is 7 pm we will call the meeting to order and kimberly if you do a roll call please here here andrea florey here right here here tyson search here thank you next item is our pledge of allegiance sorry please stand i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all thank you i'd like to welcome our visitors this evening thank you for joining us and everybody that's tuned in over youtube appreciate you participating in our meeting this evening do we have any public comments all right here we go we'll move on to correspondence and i think correspondence is passed around and we uh apparently we've all received a large stack of uh good wishes for monday was schoolwork member day and uh board member day wow this is a very overwhelming so uh thank you all for the students and everyone who took the time to send those in so much appreciated i think any other correspondents going around all right we'll move on to our consent agenda everybody has a chance to take a look at that screen are you gonna walk us through that you've got your uh typical reports in the consent agenda you'll see that we've got three resignations five employee for educational support personnel a lot of them are transportation but we've got a cafeteria and a part-time custodian uh no employee uh certified personnel no employed certified personnel leave of absences we have three there were no extracurriculars and no non-certified class advancements just three vacancies and those vacancies go with those three resignations the administration recommends the consensus agenda be approved as presented any questions or discussions with that i would entertain a motion to approve the consent agenda as presented i'll make the motion thank you tammy for a second at least the second roll call please yes yes andrea cory yes yes perfect motion carries on a side note i did want to also mention briefly i was really touched by the letters that were sent in for the most understanding for the resignation how well thought out they were and thanking the district for the time and it was definitely nothing that the district has done that these people are moving on is just kind of like we had some pregnancies but just the way they did it was impressive to me so i just kind of want to make a note of that all right move on to item 7 which is our communications and reports start with our enrollment report you got that as we do don't think there's any big changes or surprises enrollment report is in your packet have you sent any questions on that turn on uh goes on to our administrative reports and our first one is our building report mr reeves good evening uh some quick points we just closed beauty and the beast i don't know if anyone was able to go see it performed last week high school and middle school production miss babcock put it on again it was another great performance we had i think five or six showings it was fantastic we have started our winter sports girls teams in the middle of their tip-off classic right now girls and boys basketball bowling are all gearing up to start get going and as we turn towards december we're starting to look at our courses for next year which is pretty amazing we've been working with swick our counselors uh and i and mr bleckley been working with swic trying to look at some of the courses that we currently offer that might also tie in and it looks like we're going to be able to add courses three courses that we currently teach our current staff have certification that will also be able to be considered a swic class so we're going to be adding three more that are dual credit so the students will be getting their high school and some credit through swic for our basic horticulture class with mr burch consumer management with mr doogie and then our pe weights courses are going to be able to get some credit as well and we're looking to add one new course with mr birch it's another horticulture class that'll be out in the greenhouse putting making more use of the greenhouse and that will also be a swift dual credit class so a lot of things going in january the kids will start getting their packets for classes to start picking for next year so we're moving right along this school year is flying that's it thank you for our assistant superintendent's report our assistant superintendent has a death in the family so if you would keep her and her family in our thoughts and prayers so we will she did send me a we have an update so i'm going to read for you uh we're continuing to move forward with our power standard breakdowns which will guide us to ensuring that our curriculum mapping is strong and providing all the necessary stepping stones for columbia students as they grow academically in our district after this phase is complete mrs smith will be aligning the standards into maps and then involving teachers in the community and finalizing those curricular maps she's excited that this process is well underway there's so many many wonderful things going on in our district that she wanted to highlight a few of the opportunities that she's been invited to be a part of at the high school she was fortunate to go into one of mrs clayton's science classes as the students were working on their final projects for the unit mrs clayton had created opportunities for students to complete alternative assessments showing their knowledge from the unit some students were creating story books while others were creating games as students were engaged in their projects at the middle school mrs smith was invited into mrs haven's fifth grade science class as the students were completing a lab to identify mystery substances the students were utilizing their investigatory skills to complete series of experiments to determine the unknown substances again the students were engaged using their academic vocabulary and she was able to make uh her way around the different groups and inquire about the process and learning it's always good to be in a classroom and then with mrs wontuck invited her into the second grade classroom at parkview to be a guest scientist again a scientist as the students were completing an erosion experiment students were challenged to make different hypotheses as they worked through the experiments they had to pull from their background knowledge as well as lessons previously taught they had to do gallery walk around the room and see that the experiments resulted in different outcomes for the different groups at eagleview mrs meisner invited her to participate in trick-or-treating with some of the pre-k and speech students they created touch bracelets to help them communicate that they were trick-or-treating for candy and to share with their cup and to share what their costumes were the students were so excited it was wonderful to see them practicing their communications communication skills in a real world type of situation trick-or-treating we're lucky to have so many amazing people in our district and i'm looking forward she's looking forward to seeing supporting and being a part of the wonderful things they are doing in the students in colombia so it's nice to see our assistant super curriculum getting out there and getting into the classrooms and as she's building the curricular maps it's it's one thing to kind of have the ideas but it's another one to really understand the hands-on engagement that we're getting with our kids so report on your report let's keep on going i will say that uh just uh there were no foias this month i always have to report on the foias and there were none like that um adding on to that kind of the curricular we got a uh email betsy kanyak who's a fifth grade teacher and wendy stevens who's the high school math teacher are both um working through their national board certification process and so what that is it's a year-long project where they have to reflect and write and have to submit all of this work but ultimately they're going to get national board certification which is a nice little feather in their caps and it's good it's a wonderful process i've seen many teachers go through it before and the amount of writing and the amount of reflection i've never seen a teacher walk away from it without just being one of the more growth experiences so that's wonderful to see test to stay has been working well we've been testing a lot of kids uh so that they don't get quarantined for the close contacts that seems to be doing well we have had an uptick in cases mostly at eagle view but uh some at parkview the older kids not being close contact we're seeing some uh more of that we think it has to do with the holiday season the halloween and whatnot um that said there's been no movement in the tro case if you remember the fifth was supposed to be the hearing um as they added all those school districts it seems like uh you know there's a lot of reports and now they're looking for a new location right now there's no movements lots of motions have been filed um lawyers sometimes move at their own speed state lawyers move even slower and so this is just going to be one of those things but we'll keep you posted on those cases as they move forward also we got a letter from i got a letter from the city they're going to have the joint review board for the tiffs scheduled for december 2nd they've not had those in 2019 nor in 2020 because of covid so them having that um that review board back the teachers doing all of this stuff we're really starting to get back to normal and um we have had an uptick in cases we are following the protocols that are necessary we're testing a lot of kids so that they can stay and not be sent home um but it is nice i i did go to beauty and the beast and it was a wonderful performance the kids did an outstanding job um so it's just it's it's good it's the holiday season i wish everybody a nice thanksgiving and you know before we come back before the christmas season but uh that's really all i have for my report perfect thank you all right item seven or eight excuse me is our items for action we'll start off by the approval of the resolutions authorizing the estimated aggregate tax levy for the year 2021 yeah everybody's favorite topic taxes the process is is that the school district says this is the amount of money that we need we look at historical trends and whatnot we ask for an amount of money then the county will look at the eavs the growths and whatnot and they will set the tax rate we have historically always extended for 4.95 percent in schools they say don't leave any money on the table you if you've got a growing eav you can go above 5 but with that you need to have a hearing it's not typical or not atypical for school districts to tax it like 10 percent or extend for 10 you don't get that you only get the maximum that you're allowed but they call that don't leave any money on the table we're going to be extending in this uh recommendation for 4.95 so we won't need to have a hearing um it's it's within what would be normally done questions concerns comments on that we this is one of those two point processes we'll be approving it this month and then we will be approving it again next month so it's not completely official and filed until next month so um the recommendation is to accept the extension that would be a 4.95 percent increase so what's the increase for the increase is what you do is is every year you say i want this amount of money okay and then the state and the the county says this is how much you get okay because if you say 4.95 you might get three percent it depends on what your eav does and everything else okay and so then every year all you can do is you can you have to then look at what you've got the previous year and then say i want this amount more and you can do a percentage more you're not guaranteed to get the 4.95 because the the county's got to do the calculations to set the rate but you get you won't get anything that you don't ask for so yeah i'm just trying to figure out this it seems the process is backwards but it is absolutely designed i've said this before and i've taken many many classes on the tax rate it's designed to confuse people because what we're levying right now will be the taxes that you'll see next year and we'll get them the following year it's uh you're always in the rears and so it's a it is probably the most confusing and convoluted process the thing is is that you you really kind of if you look at it it's a fork of roads you can say i can want to go more than four five percent or i'm going to go at five percent and that says whether or not you want to have a hearing and see if you can get more money a lot of times right now our last couple of years we haven't seen the growth that would have allowed us to go over five percent and so you know why would you have a a request for ten percent more money when you're only going to get probably less than five percent and so looking at the information i would recommend we go with four point nine five percent because that would be and then the four point nine five percent is not a tax rate it is it is the um it's the percentage of the increase over what was given to growth last year yes the gross revenue for last year to this year that is correct right so and you know some folks infuse that 4.9 percent as their as a new rate right it's not an increase it's not an increase of their rate it's an increase of the amount of money we are requesting and then the rate gets calculated right and so um yeah that's because it's based on eav you know bab has gone gone up quite a bit then the rate would be much lower and yes and that kind of thing right yes okay any questions discussions good idea bad idea so it's still us asking for 4.95 more than we asked for last year no it's 4.95 more than what we got last year okay so we asked for a certain amount last year we got less than that last year so we didn't leave any money on the table which is a good thing four point nine four five percent we're asking for that so that we can depending because we don't know what the eav's gonna do it it's so what this allows us to do is to get the hopefully the the right amount in in my past worlds we have always gone above the five percent and always have it had to have a hearing do the black box in the paper and all that kind of yes right and there's a process you go through for that and that's because in those districts you you you need every dollar you can get we've been very fiscally responsible we've done a very good job and so the 4.95 i don't think that it'd be worth it to go out to try and um capture more money with the 4.95 we will we will be able to function as we have in the past because because basically we're expecting the av to rise about that percentage in this area yeah i mean tax rate would pretty much be flatter yeah you know but that's where you start getting into the has any tiff districts falling off are they coming back on and so there's a lot of variables right um i believe a 4.95 percent is is fair uh again that's not a tax rate that's an increase of the extension that we got last year so that the rate can be calculated which is pretty consistent with our 10-year history yes any questions anybody like to make a motion to approve the resolution authorizing the estimated aggregate tax levy for the year 2021.

now you're all set okay so seeing the presence of a quorum i will call to order this meeting of the pelham school committee on wednesday november 17th at 6 30 p.m um i'm margaret stancer i'll be chairing the meeting tonight in the absence of our chair sarah hall i will take a roll call vote um so just respond present sarah bess brenda marlo present ron present and margaret present um our first order of business will be approval of the minutes and there are three sets of minutes to go through today um mike will you share them for us we'll start with one that's way back from the summer i think it um right so um would someone like to make a motion to approve the minutes and then we'll go into uh corrections and changes and i can't see anybody i can't and yeah oh that's good okay um so i move that we accept the minutes of thursday july 1st are there is there a second thank you ron um so any corrections or changes to the minutes wow great um see none we'll take a vote uh sarah bess kenny i ron menino i brenda barlow i and stan sir i the minutes are approved for eyes and zero nays all right so the second set of minutes okay i move that we accept the minutes of wednesday september 15th do i have a second second thank you uh are there comments um changes corrections uh seeing oh sarah bess i have um just two really quick ones they're just um spelling so in section b and the reports um it's listed as the bright program but it's bright but i believe it's bright b-r-y-t their initials and then um so i think that just needs a little updating and then in section g um there is under the gifs mr laurie's name is l-a-w-r-i-e thank you anyone else have um corrections no okay then we'll proceed to a vote um sarah bess kenny aye ron menino why brenda barlow i and stance or eye those minutes are approved and then we'll move on to the minutes from our last meeting which was wednesday october 20th um i moved to accept the meeting minutes of wednesday october 20th do i have a second a second thank you uh it's open for changes corrections editions dr morris just a spelling one and i think i've spelled it wrong so this is no knock on you may lean but uh esr is e-s-s-e-r so it's a five-letter acronym there there's an e before the r at the end of s but i've made that mistake many a time and i know you've copied my documents that had that mistake but uh just i think we should have the corrected language or corrected acronym on there okay anyone else see no other corrections or changes we'll take a vote miss kenny kenny aye mr menino menino i miss barlow barlow eye and stance or i all right uh we have no public comment tonight so we will move on to the superintendent's update sure um and i'll be brief um a couple things that have been going on we've had pool testing started across all the schools in all three districts and so that's gone uh smoothly and obviously took a long time to get going longer than we'd like but um that's been a good thing and so far all of our pools have come up negative at all of our schools i can't guarantee that'll continue i actually find it mathematically unlikely that that'll continue in all of our schools but so far so good with that and appreciate the vendor and the nurses and nurse kd and all the work that's gone into getting that off the ground so that's been a good thing i think what we've seen is you know since we have those two early cases in pelham things settle uh in pelham but you know as the cases go up across the state and in our region it's likely that we'll see more cases in our schools and we're already starting to see that in some of my other districts so you know i think we are reflective of the case counts in the larger community i think the important note is in all of our schools including pelham we have no evidence of school-based fred in other words when the contact tracing occurs the point of contact that where the covid is thought to have spread is is generally in the home or in social situations outside of school and that makes me feel really good about our the measures we're taking um to keep students safe it's not that we can prevent anyone from catching covet or we can guarantee that there will be never be school spread but at this point across our three districts we've you know we're over 20 cases we've fair number of close contacts and no one's tested positive so i think there's evidence that the strategies we're using around ventilation masking now we've added the testing piece and distancing have been effective complement the pelham staff they're doing a great job even in the chilly weather we're starting to have of getting kids outside and eating outside and taking a lot of measures to keep our school safe the third thing i want to mention um is i had um well try to go in order i'll stay on health and safety i know we'll talk about vaccine stuff later so i will get there um shortly but um i think i think we've really had a lot of support and i really do want to think i know i mentioned nurse katie before but she's uh there was a good article in the new york times the other day about this the nurses and schools have held on to a lot of people's anxiety throughout the school year um in all schools and i just want to publicly thank nurse katie uh and and you know there's a lot of people who uh had lots of current concerns and continue to have lots of concerns about what in-person schooling looks like uh mid pandemic and um you know that's a lot it's a lot to carry uh we tried to celebrate our nurses earlier in the year but i just i don't think i can say enough how important her support of pelham school has been and how critical it is that especially at a small school like pelham where everybody knows everyone that we have that ongoing support from the nursing staff at pelham so i want to really you know thank her for that um i think the last thing i want to mention before i turn it over to mickey is i was able to be up at pelham with mickey today and just got in a couple classrooms and and what i was kind of sharing with mickey is just just how engaged the kids are yes they're sitting further apart yes they're wearing masking wearing masks um but the learning that's happening and the instruction uh has maintained kind of the hallmark of pelham which is you know small school and high level of engagement in community and and that's become harder to do uh given the restrictions of understandable covert related restrictions we have so just compliments of the staff for for stepping up in that um in that regard because it's not easy i was on a superintendent conference call today of superintendents in western mass and you know one of the things we're talking about is it's not just the teaching it's that you know coming into work in any workplace now is a lot more isolating than it was pre-covered um there's not the casual conversations because we are being very careful and we do have protocols around sort of break room areas and and that's that's a real challenge and i think the staff has maintained that level of connection and community uh despite those um challenges and i think though actually the last thing i'll say and i said this last night at the amber school committee is i am starting to hear considerable uh feedback that come january um that i think a lot of the restrictions at least on the state level are likely to be relaxed and you know from what i understand there was a desire to wait till the five plus vaccine was available and accessible before some of the state restrictions would be removed because there's such a large group of students a large group of people in the commonwealth but when we get to january everyone over the age of everyone five and up uh we'll have had the opportunity if those shows to be uh vaccinated what that'll mean locally we don't know um you know we i do talk to the board of health regularly we are not going to be the first district around here to d-mask that i can guarantee you right now we're not in a rush but i do think at some point as we go through this academic year we are going to need to start talking about relaxing some of those restrictions um you know i'm not you know a lot of people have made up a lot of uh kind of myths about the dangers of masking for kids that i don't subscribe to or subscribe to and it's really hard to learn how to read you know when you can't see someone's mouth in the same way and you know being able to hear over an air purifier while students are wearing masks is a real challenge i think people are overcoming those uh but at the same time i think you know we get to january and february i'm not interested in going quickly in terms of reducing or removing the covert related restrictions but i am interested in start having those conversations with the committee and the community about a direction we want to go because we're not going to be wearing masks forever we're not going to be doing all of these kind of restrictions forever there is a real cost to them so you know all that to preview that you may hear things at the state level there will be no changes at pelham until we've had a public conversation about them so whatever happens at desi will will you know essentially just hunt to local control and we are the local control so uh we will come back to that so i don't want to get ahead of myself but the more and more indications of hearing uh we may be seeing some at the state level and at some municipal levels not necessarily the town of pelham but uh towns around here some relaxation of some of the covered restrictions that have been placed a very long time and so uh you know i'll talk about vaccines a bit later uh at the five to 11 year old group but i do think we're going to see some movement over the next few months at the state level and that is my update and certainly if there's questions i'm happy to take them before we go on to principal darling mr menino regarding the masks i'm just curious have teachers found it more difficult to read the emotions on the kids are going through when they just use their eyes or not i i'm not sure if i'm making myself clear but you know if a kid's unhappy or happy can they still detect it yeah i think and and i'd be curious principal darling can jump into a second um i think like a lot of things i think it is more challenging i don't think it's been impossible to detect emotion but when you can't read the body language from the nose down that affects how much you're able to pick up on non-verbal body language it also you know what i find is it just even for kids and adults it sort of flattens my face right if i know no one can see my mouth right i sort of when i'm wearing a mask i don't show as much you know and that probably shows for the rest of my face as well so um you know i i don't know if it's been you know i wouldn't say that we're not able to we educators are not able to read students body language and emotions but i think it has added an additional challenge and wrinkle i don't know if you would agree with that miss darling um i would agree i think it's harder for the kids to read each other especially since they have less experience and find it harder to read eyes you know they can i i tend to smile really big so they can see that my eyes are squinching up and i don't know if that's a real word but um you know it's harder for the kids to read other kids any other questions i actually do have a question about the pool testing do you know approximate percentage of students that are doing the pool testing yeah so uh you know i'd be curious if ms darling can conduce pelham specific across all three districts it keeps on rising like every week there's a couple more um i think we started it was about a third and and across the three districts i think we're up to you know the neighborhood of 50 maybe a little bit more um i don't know if that matches pelham's numbers because i get the sort of combined consolidated district multiple district numbers um mr do you have a sense of what you would estimate i don't actually know um if i had to guess i would say okay thank you thank you um so if there aren't any more questions um we'll move on to the principles update ms darling okay um so i would agree with a lot of what mike was saying about the students being engaged and walking around and seeing a lot of really wonderful stuff uh i can give you like a few updates in some of the classrooms the kindergartners are so adorable um they are learning some really hard lessons about uh we do weekly pause prizes and one little friend won a prize probably the first week and ever since then when am i gonna win another prize and the tears start flowing so some hard lessons along with some really you know great lessons uh the first grade was learning about diwali the religious the religious holiday a couple weeks ago third grade were real they were really engaged in writing spooky stories i've never seen like i walked in i was like what's happening everyone was really engaged in that um we walked into a fourth grade science unit on mudslides and uh miss gear was asking the students what could people do to prevent mudslides and one one student said i think we should get a giant fan to blow away the clouds so the rain wouldn't come so i mean they could come up with a real possibility so it's really exciting um there that we did the student council voting and grades four through six two representatives from each class got voted in and anyone who ran is kind of the next level down and i forget what they're calling them but everyone is included but we do have you know two from each class as the official representatives and it was fun to see them campaign and they did speeches outside um i i think in general the students appear to be adjusting more to being back in person and are figuring out how to be with each other socially and that's really great um that's not to say that you know everything is going smoothly there's the normal stuff that comes up uh the fourth grade is piloting a new social emotional curriculum and because they piloted that curriculum we were able to get it for free for the whole year for the whole school so that's exciting and um jess nardisi our counselor said it's one of the best that she's seen so we're excited about that um we've started a bunch of committees we've brought the committees back we have a school culture committee that's working on primarily the staff and helping the staff during this really challenging time i have seen that staff are really [Music] i will i will call it more stressed than normal and this committee is looking at ways to help and uh make sure they feel appreciated uh we have a social justice committee that some parents signed up to join and that's really exciting um and a silt committee which is basically an instructional leadership committee and so we're looking at the data from the mcas and also just the district beginning of year middle of year and end of year that we have done for as long as i've been in the district and looking at trends and trying to figure out how we can help to you know if we notice that i don't know fractions are something that the students are struggling with we will we're looking closely at those little moments not moments little sections and we're gonna do some research on how to help in those areas um [Music] as i've mentioned bright is continuing continuously working with us we had them for our one of our staff meetings last week and that was really great um we're having the turkey trot this friday very exciting bringing bringing it back i actually have never been at pelham for the turkey trout so i'm super excited uh it's a mile run walk skip dance whatever you want to do the staff are going to be out there all the students mostly you know we're not going to make anyone who doesn't want to participate participate but it's going to be outside and come around back to the school and there might be a teacher dressed up in like a turkey i don't know maybe it will happen um intervention is showing amazing amazing progress so our intervention teacher has been sharing with all the classroom teachers and with uh parents the unbelievable progress in such a short amount of time so that's really exciting for us uh the trunk or treat was a success the the haunted house was amazing it was i was spooked i i really was i was nervous walking through and the kids seemed to have just as much fun if if it were sunny and and not pouring rain um even the paris looked okay um and i would say that's really it i mean there's a lot going on and hopefully i i did get an email from a parent saying thank you for bringing the fun back to pelham so that's one thing i'm feeling pretty good about great thank you um are there any questions i just want to say the updates that you and mike give are inspiring i just wish you could film it and send us a video of what's going on in the school i missed the school terribly it's been almost two years and it looks like it's gonna be another semester or so before i can return i i miss the smiles on the kids faces that's all yeah they miss you too the third grade definitely is yeah um i actually have a question um can i don't really know what the intervention teacher does do you want me to give you like a briefing just a brief just a brief sure um so using the data that we've been collecting we've been collecting it for years we can see that certain students struggle either in reading or math and we can see where they're struggling uh with reading it's a little harder the intervention teacher had to do some digger deeping and give a few other assessments to see why that student is struggling with reading and then what we did was we looked at the class we pulled the two or three kiddos that need a little additional support she did those additional assessments and then during our wind block which is whatever you need block it's actually whatever i need but you know whatever they need um she will pull them into a separate classroom because it's it's hard during covid to do it in the classroom that would be more ideal but you know she'll find a separate space and she'll give them direct instruction in the areas where they have deficits we're really excited that for reading in the last i would say three years we've learned a lot about reading and how to provide instruction that really helps reading is called phonological awareness and it's all about the sounds that the the letters make and being able to in your i guess in your brain like play around with the sounds in different ways and take sounds out and add sounds and just doing exercises in phonological awareness has really increased not only uh decoding reading but also their fluency how quickly they read so um she is seeing just huge progress being able to give that kind of direct instruction to two or three kids three to five times a week and the plan is to only do it for six to eight weeks and see you know test them at the end of the 68 six to eight weeks and see how they are and then readjust and sorry and you know either yes what we're doing is working or know what we're doing is is not working and we need to reevaluate and the big goal is to prevent these students from being referred to special ed possibly unnecessarily okay thank you that's very helpful to understand um if there aren't any more questions we'll move on um the chair is not here she didn't send any uh thing to report vice chair doesn't have anything to report so um do any of the school committee members have any announcements to make all right then we're going to move right into our new and continuing business and the first item is the superintendent goals at our last meeting dr morris presented the goals and we talked about them a bit they've come back tonight and i think it will possibly be for a vote to accept the goals after discussion um and as you can see he's added the uh the categories from the superintendent's rubric the state has a way that you have to evaluate superintendents and he's put a link at the top of this i saw tonight which is great so that if you want to know more about the rubric you can look at that um so i guess we'll i'll just open it up to dr morris and any committee members who have questions or comments do you want to go first dr morris yeah i'll be very brief um i was able to integrate as you noted thank you some of the standards and as well as the rubric a couple minor changes like including more longitudinal comparisons um around staff of color so it's not year by year but the committees in the community we get a sense of kind of over the last five years and seeing how that's trending uh because it is you know it's a long-term goal for all of our districts and and i think looking at longitudinally made more sense so it was able to integrate that in um and i think that's really the the most significant um change i think it is you know a couple things in here about like math programming and some other things that we'll be uh updating the committee on over the next couple months but uh it's it's not a wildly different document than what you saw the last time okay thank you um so questions or comments from committee members i'm not seeing any so are people prepared to vote tonight to accept the all right would someone like to make a motion so moved thank you mr menino a second second thank you um uh we'll take a roll call vote miss kenny kenny aye mr menino menino i and miss barlow barlow eye and stance or eye the the motion passes for in favor um all right so we'll move on to the next item which is the sixth grade to middle school conversation um we touched on this just briefly at the last meeting and i think at this point i would turn it over to dr morris yeah so i think the summary my summary of the last meeting is you know i made a recommendation perhaps not to rush this conversation in pelham there's not the same urgency you don't have a building project you don't have a space crunch in the same way the amherst schools do you but i think the conversation was really helpful to me to hear the committee last time uh be able to talk through some of the you know implications about what is the model not at a necessarily just even at a broad level but not even at a specific level excuse me but at a broader level like you know if helm sixth graders went to the middle school uh if the pelham sixth grade teacher went to the middle school that seems like it doesn't make a whole lot of sense um so i thought we'd come back this time and uh see if people agreed with me first of all just because that makes sense to me doesn't mean it doesn't make sense to the committee um but but really trying to think about if the pelham community wanted to engage this question um you know that that really uh in it it's really a different different question than it is for my other community other elementary district and amherst because uh my recommendation if you wanted to pursue it would be pursuing it in conjunction with the amherst elementary district the benefits um the potential benefits anyway of thinking about a sixth grade move for pelham would have to be woven into having more than one teacher kind of some level of middle school model um you know there's no way that pelham could go without its counselor you know for instance you know just have you know the sixth grade teacher up there and no mental health supporter you know it would have to be a collaboration with the amherst public schools from my you know my opinion uh where we are on planning is um on curriculum day i met with some of the sixth grade staff regular ed special ed ell uh and some admin from the amherst public schools and we're meeting again after the after the holiday break and really what we're trying to do and i think i can bring this back to the palm committee because i think it's probably the thing that is the next thing to dig in on is sort of what are those critical buckets of work or questions that folks have for instance we know world language is going to be one there's multiple models for world language could be exploratory model where every sixth grade student um you know receive one quarter in each of the four languages makes a decision for seventh grade there's other sixth grade models where students make a decision on spanish latin chinese or french and then go right into the language there's a model question about you know should there be two core teachers for sixth grade team or four core teachers for a sixth grade team and so you know we had a really rich conversation on november 2nd we're going to come back after the break and really try to delineate what are some key questions to consider uh you know it's very amber centric at this point but i don't actually think that matters i think they're core questions anytime any districts transitioning from to a six six state middle school and i think that's perhaps the time by which you know at the next meeting i'll be able to share that both with the amherst school committee and the pelham school committee and i think that's probably where you're going to generate a lot of dialogue you know right at this point it's still in the so a little bit in the ether we got to a a pretty good place with a one-hour meeting we have an hour and a half uh scheduled the week after break with the explicit purpose of having deliverables not making decisions actually to be really clear but identifying what are areas that we would want to get feedback on and how we're going to get feedback from students families uh staff members in the community on these and i think that'll drive the conversation that i sensed the committee wanting to have last month uh because i think right now it's sort of this gelatinous uh item where you know there's too many you sort of have to structure some thoughts and some core questions uh we're not quite there yet we will be there in december um so you know i think that the two things i had for tonight is one to make sure that i'm reading the room right that that if pelham wanted to engage in it it would be an integrated model with the amherst elementary district and also to see if the committee would want me to come back in december or january with that list it is being generated by amherst folks but i do think it's uh i don't think that's relevant in this case i think it really is going to be what do we what educational models do we want um and again it's a process piece it's not a decision piece but i think it'll generate a much better set of much better dialogue than where we are today and i showed this at the amherst school committee last night as well so those are the two things i had for to generate a dialogue discussion or thoughts from the committee tonight thank you um uh comments questions mr menino point of clarification i think margaret was well quoted in the gazette article for the regional meeting with the position of pelham was but i'm not sure uh the pelham parents were were notified what has been done to let the pelham parents know that we haven't yet made a decision how do the parents know what's going on because they read the newspaper uh sixth grade moving to the middle school they some of them assume it includes uh the regional the the outlying towns yeah so i think that um we talked and we didn't get to resolution but maybe putting something in the pelham press um and i think it was um in the pelham press um so i think parents did get notified but not everyone reads i know from my newsletter not everybody reads it um so perhaps we can continue miss darling if that's okay putting it in one more time i find that repetition is not yes a terrible thing um but i know that it went in i just if you're still hearing questions that doesn't surprise me because i know you know lots of we all get too many emails in life and so um miss darling would that be okay to uh repeat putting that into the present palm press sure yeah and then i'm not sure this were you asking for our response right now to the movement of the sixth grade teacher to the middle school or i think can we comment on that now or should we i mean i would love to make sure i'm reading the room right that if pelham is going to consider it it's thinking about it some level of collaboration well yeah i have reservations about the whole thing but to move the sixth grade teacher to in the sixth grade class to the middle school and just have it taught the way it was taught hit the pelham school makes no sense the idea is integration i mean if we if we move to the middle school we should be part and parcel of the whole program there should be new next to an amherst student uh you know it shouldn't be isolated i mean it makes you miss all the benefit of the potential move that way that's all um i i just make one comment which is we did at the regional meeting when we passed the the um or approved moving the six am or sixth graders or sixth graders to the middle school we included as was requested in our last meeting to have something saying that pelham could join at a later date just to make sure that that was really clear you know that late if we decided not to go right away we would still have the option later well i think you your comments were well reported but not everybody reads that think about the last paragraph of the article in the gazette where your comments were right miss barlow yes i just wanted to say if we do entertain this certainly i think that integration is you know beneficial in how students can mostly benefit from the potential move um and another thing i wanted to raise just to consider as to consider this um i'd love maybe to have a conversation or to learn more about the potential financial ramifications of moving the sixth grade i think that because of our budget issues although this year we've been like pretty good um i just want to think about what the long-term budget issues um might be because i think that's going to be a part of the puzzle for us dr morris yeah i think that's spot on uh you know uh you know i have talked to dr slaughter about us this i mean candidly it's a really different situation than the amherst public schools and we have some concerns about how to do cost sharing of shared staff that we would be needed and it's already gonna be a little complicated between the emerson region but because amherst comprises 80 of the region it's a little bit easier to manage that but when you're talking about three percent of a regional district and you're talking about even like something as as simple as a nurse which is obviously gonna be shared staff it's not gonna be like one class of pelham kids with their own nurse at the middle school uh you're talking about three percent but that all adds up for the overhead whereas for the amherst piece it's just less relevant so uh dr schlotter and i do have financial concerns um that unless the regional agreement was shifted and all the towns participated uh which would would be a different thing we've got significant concerns about the financial impact on pelham as well so we could definitely come back to that because i think it's i'm so glad you raised it because i think it is a very real question mr menino uh just a clarification on the cost sixth grade students who are choice are not considered pelham students for the purposes of budgeting are they uh sixth grade pelham students cisco they're not our students if they choose to go to the middle school sixth grade students were they would be in this scenario because the sixth grade would still belong to and be governed by you all oh so that's that's different than now right not one of the sixth grade schools in middle school okay yeah because when you know if you think of seventh grade now they're not part of this district so okay right um but yeah no it's an awkward transition where we have a whole bunch of choice kids from all four of the elementary districts and then we the region inherits them as choice students and it looks like our choice numbers go way up in seventh grade but it's actually just an artifact of um the flow of students so um and we would be informed of all these financial considerations before we vote for the move or after we vote for the move i think um both because depending on how the move would be structured if it did happen it would affect the finances in other words you you could imagine multiple models would that have different financial implications uh for it but but it is a complicated set of variables for pelham to do not just the i think the education part frankly is easier i'm not saying it's good bad whatever but that's easier to figure out the financial part would be a real challenge for pelham anyone else have questions um miss kenny uh i have i have the same two questions what the program look like um i i think just moving our sixth grade as is to the middle school doesn't really offer much benefits i think having our sixth graders where they are they are huge benefit in our school and they're fantastic um so just to move them to a different place when we're not having space issues seems like a silly choice to me um so i would be interested in the program more if it were what the integration would look like and how that would work out and i you know same i would definitely want to know how the money piece would all come together and unfold um i think that would be a really important part because it would make um our decisions that would be a whole school decision not just about how things will affect the sixth grade so mr menino one of my comments i've been asking for three years before i i guess it makes sense to have some of these things decided before you seek the response of parents but what do the pelham parents think are they for this are they against this i don't know i can't my daughter's 37 years old i don't know my position on the movement of sixth grade is not not involved if i've got a kid what do i think about it so we will hear from the pelham parents before we make a decision won't we i would not advise you making a decision before you have broad input from not just the film families but film staff and pelham students as well i'll just keep making this comment every meeting though just in case great anyone else um the other thing dr oh ms barlow just i mean yes i think it's so important to get feedback from all the constituents of pelham but if it's not financially feasible i think i think it's important to look at the money because we are so vulnerable in a way and if it's not financially feasible i don't know that we wanna how far down the road we wanna get with it although you know i think again the educational opportunities are really exciting to me but you know and i know we won't 100 know what the financial ramifications are but to get a snapshot from dr slaughter sooner than later i think would be really helpful i think you're right and i do think uh i think that's spot on i fully agree with that because i i'm not sure i'm not going to use the word feasible because anything's feasible it's just what your priorities are right but um i'm not sure it'd be financially advisable from my perspective um to take this on if it added almost any additional cost um just given given a you know i know we're in better shape now but one two students going elsewhere could change that right and i've been through this cycle multiple times of feeling like we're okay and we're not okay feeling like we're not okay and we skate by um but it's it's we're not out of the woods it's just you know we're in a better place which is great um so i think that's a point really well taken and something i can talk to dr slaughter about thinking about i think it's sort of we have to get somewhere down on the line on model before we can do the cost but you know the per pupil cost in pelham is less than it is uh in amherst so you know there's all sorts of some complex um negotiations and um sometimes our towns do that well sometimes we'll see about four town meeting on saturday and how that goes um but for a different district but um i i think your point's well taken that i think if we're seeing financial roadblocks it may not be worth going too far forward um at the point at this point it may be that a couple years down the road we are but um you know i think i think i agree with your sentiment that if we get the sense that there's going to be a significant added cost i don't see pelham in the place where we want to add costs for anything other than directly related to the students at pelham school that's my my viewpoint anyway hey um so the other uh item you mentioned dr morris was coming back to our next meeting with information from your next meeting with the sixth grade teachers is that something the committee would like to have happen i yes okay great so that that'll uh miss kenny i think um as many updates as we can have on this well it's in the program you know figuring out phases i think um the better and i think it gives the whole pelham community more time to think and process and sit with how they feel or what's going to be important to them as as this whole thing progresses okay so that i guess that will go on to the agenda for next month again for our next meeting okay so the next item is preschool in fiscal year 23 and um are we going to dr morris or miss darling i think i'll start and and take this so ms darling can jump in um i know this is a little early to have the conversation it's before we start the budget process but that's not by accident um as you know we had a preschool program here for about six years six seven years and uh when the pandemic started it was unclear whether we were going to be able to maintain that program uh because we didn't know if we would have school open um and virtual preschools are not seen to be as beneficial as perhaps some of the older greats and so we stopped it uh we did not have it this year i want to thank mishlotti who's i think ms darling actually was referencing before in terms of taking on the intervention role this year and doing a fabulous job with that our former preschool teacher and so when we look forward to next year i have some real concerns about opening the preschool up and it's kind of three or four of them the first is that the significant amount of overhead to restart the program um that you know when you have a stable group of students some graduate up to kindergarten some stay with you that's a little bit easier when you're transitioning a whole group of 18 or however many students it would be to recruit that that's that comes with some challenges the first is just the overhead given all the things that we're managing and particularly principal darling's managing very well i might add at pelham school the second piece is is really about the cost um so um i'm happy that you know power educators and others got a pretty significant pay bump this year that's a really good thing uh what it would mean for our programming is that we would be to come even we'd be nearing ten dollars an hour uh for cost um because our salary increases are a bit more than uh in the private market that's not a knock on our salary increases i think you know our staff members work incredibly hard and they deserve um to have the salaries they have and probably then some and so um but you know i think we i am concerned given the cost increases that we're seeing um that we're going to price ourselves out of the market um because that'd be significantly more than than just about any other private preschool in our area with the exception of one or two uh the third concern i have about starting the program again uh really comes to space but we don't have the space issues that amherst has i mean i was at the school a couple hours ago and i was seeing intervention groups in the art room uh the music room music class is also using that art room which was the preschool room it's opened up the gym a long time ago before the preschool program started the gym was used all the time for indoor recess for movement breaks for kids all these things that we've you know we got accustomed to not having and so i do have some real concerns about that you know you could argue that once you lose the space you know once you gain the space it um you use it but i'm not seeing people just casually using the space i'm seeing people using it to have small group instruction i'm seeing it for students who are struggling to have a different space to do learning that ms darling mentioned some you know early literacy skills early math skills uh and the movement skills are really important and we want our kids up and moving because we know it helps them learn so you know i i think we got used to being really tight on space and now that we're less tight on space what i see is instruction happening in ways that are working better for children um so you know at this point i'm not looking for a decision tonight but at this point my recommendation or initial recommendation would be to maintain our current k-6 program through all of our put all of our resources in it there is nine thousand dollars left in the preschool revolving account uh and the pre-fools preschool revolving fund and so that doesn't need to go anywhere anytime soon um it's a little less than ideally we would have um you generally want to have about 20 000 about 20 of you know typical year um but but it's okay um and we would just hold on to that so in other words we're not you know i wouldn't be recommending a permanent decision but at this point given covet given what we're seeing about space and use of space in the building and some real creativity on the part of ms darling in terms of designing the you know and reformatting the special ed and intervention group uh differently than how it was formulated in the future or formulated in the past rather that's really working for kids i'd be inclined to uh maintain our level of programming and um and really focus our energy in and really like i mentioned before it is an exhausting experience running a school during covet and from for ms darling to jump into this kudos to you uh you know um i think i said this at the high school graduation about mr speak as well takes a a special person to jump into a school leadership role mid pandemic um not an easy thing to do um but you know the reality is i think there's enough to focus on at our k-6 environment and the last point is that you know originally this was designed to increase the choice numbers in the school what we experienced this year is that our choice numbers got back to where we needed them to be without having a preschool program that was a feeder program so you know for me you know that's the way i'm leaning you know when not asking for a decision tonight we come back maybe in december because it'd be helpful to have that decision before the budget process kicks off in earnest but that's sort of where i am at the moment miss darling you don't have to add anything i don't know if there's other wrinkles that i'm missing that you'd like to add um the only thing that i could add is i agree with a lot of the points you just made and i remember you know before the pandemic when the preschool was there and i was a teacher there was constantly an absence of a teacher in the preschool program which we had to fill legally we had to uh put another person in there so that meant pulling a teacher from the k to six staff which isn't always ideal and it was constant so that's the only thing that my experience any questions from committee members comments mr menino not commenting now does not in any way shape or form making us a comment later i mean if we're silent now we can speak up later dr morris yes yes absolutely yeah no i i just you know there was no memo attached i apologize for this one um but i just at least wanted to share my thoughts any any other comments or questions no other than my csa issue that he has not had in previous meetings [Laughter] excitable kids i probably should have done this meeting from the office but i chose not to and i'm regretting it but that's okay right so we'll move on to the next item which is vaccines for students 5 to 11 years old and dr morris again yeah so you know great news couple weeks ago that vaccines at this age level the elementary age level were approved we had some vaccine clinics the town of amherst uh ran uh they got 150 doses or they actually titrated it really well so we ended up getting 152 doses out of it and we ran school-based clinics last week at fort river wildwood and crocker farm and they really had an equity focus so the number of students who attended there was a tremendous amount of outreach that was that went on uh really looking at students and families who had access barriers to receiving the vaccine fortunately this vaccine is not like last march and april where there were no appointments and people were waking up at three in the morning to get their appointments frankly there's appointments readily available both pediatricians offices cvs walgreens big y you know there's been some state sites that have been set up umass i was at umass my own child last week um you know but also in springfield i know there were sites like right away that had had openings so uh we um we i did talk to principal darling who identified a few students who might benefit from having a school-based clinic you know fort river is not very far it's not very far down the road at that point those families indicated that they either already had appointments elsewhere were you know not interested in having the vaccine for their child at this time so we did not have helm students participate but i think it is worth noting that if there were students who had those access barriers we were we had an alternative for them uh we are running another clinic next tuesday night um uh tuesday afternoon it's three to five thirty um it's located at the high school um it's through the state run clinic so it's not the town of amherst clinic it's the state-run clinic and um the uh there are still pediatric pediatric vacancies as well as adult vacancies we had a lot of adults sign up for boosters first shot second shot you know it seems likely that boosters are gonna be available for everybody every adult over 18 probably within a couple days so that me get more interest in that as well and three weeks later there'll be a second shot same time same location so the uh the data that we get from the state uh puts emerson palm together because it's by zip code um but the data was promising in the first four days that they were available eighteen percent of children five to eleven in the town of amherst and pelham uh already had their first shot um and that number would be higher because our last clinic was the day after um in amherst and we there's 52 kids that got vaccinated that day so as well as umass had their clinic i know there was a pelham family i saw when i was literally there uh for my own child uh just someone i knew who was there so between the fort river clinic and the the umass clinic i know our numbers probably my guess would have doubled uh if they included that last day so i think there has been broad interest in pelham families we're trying to make it as accessible as possible at that high school clinic we emailed out that information the newsletter friday i put a reminder in by email to all families on monday and we'll keep on seeing what we can do to support families to access that that resource you know what we know is that we're safer vaccines are much more effective at the community level in the individual level so well it helps protect you or anyone who gets a vaccine the most important thing is that the community has wide vaccination coverage right now if you look at our numbers in emerson pelham at the 12 to 15 year old level for instance we're at 89 percent vaccinated which is fantastic um and so i think these are communities that i'm sorry i don't have home specific numbers because they don't they don't break it out that way it's by zip code um but i think we are seeing these are these are numbers that are favorable and i think there's been a lot of interest i know i talked to principal darling and and she's hearing just anecdotally you know parents picking up their children for vaccine shots you know if they got them but you know cvs or in a principal's office in the day um and bring their kids back you know so far what we've heard anecdotally is the and it's in the clinical data as well that the side effects have been much more mild than old folks like us uh on this call and that's a good thing so that we're not having kids miss school the same way sometimes adults need to miss work because of the side effects so uh so far so good uh we'll keep on figuring out what the needs of the community are but i think it is uh something that we're really excited about it's gonna make our school safer i mean i will tell you anecdotally as well it's a really different feeling at the middle school high school it's not that there aren't positive cases at the middle school high school there are um but because our vaccination coverage both of the staff and students is so high um i wouldn't say it's relaxed um but it is less intense when you have schools that are well above 80 percent vaccinated whereas at pelham formerly you know if you think of all the students maybe there's a couple sixth graders who stuck in there based on their birth date um but this will i think make our school safer at a pretty critical time because we we slowly we're seeing trends you know negative trending um in massachusetts in the northeast right now with the colder weather and the holiday season i think that's likely to continue uh you know the case counts are going up fortunately hospitalization and some other critical numbers are not going up at the same level but uh i mean today's number was the highest i've seen in months you know of new cases um 2600 new cases um so you know we're seeing what maybe our health care professionals were suggesting was likely to happen post halloween more inside time and so critical time for us all to take this vaccination opportunity really seriously in the school and we'll continue to provide resources and support for families to get vaccinated for their children to get vaccinated so that's my update there ms darling anything i'm missing on that one thank you okay uh questions or comments okay thank you thank you dr morris um [Music] that's the end of our new and continuing business um there are two warrants and um i will read them in sarah's place um [Music] sarah hall authorized by her signature to payables in the amount of 58 887.96 for payroll dated 8 25 21 and sarah hall authorized by her signature two payables and the amount of nine 62 seven dollars and forty five cents for payroll and that was dated eleven three twenty one um so uh we have no gifts so that leads us to adjourn but i need a motion would somebody like to make one solved oh thank you mr menino i'll second that uh we'll take a roll call vote miss kenny kenny aye ms barlow barlow eye mr miss darling now you don't have to say anything mr menino menino the meeting is adjourned thank you everyone see you next time good night thank you everyone

it's a little chilly out here tonight uh but it's it's sky's pretty clear a little overcast 45 degrees gonna get a little bit colder so if you're at home hopefully you got a nice roaring fire and warming up maybe a hot chocolate in hand me and uh chad o'brien up here are gonna be freezing a little bit but uh it's completely worth it you know we're seeing the game live and it's going to be a good one between the east long metal spartans and the canton bulldogs i'm really excited for this one it's going to be a good matchup east london coming off a huge win over nosset high school in the elite eight game they were able to score three goals in the second half after being down three to nothing and able to tie this game up send it into double overtime and eventually into shootouts in which the amman karana was able to close it out for east longmeadow in the ninth round of that shootout canton obviously having a great season here in the final four against east long battle this one is going to be a dogfight i'm excited and we are just moments away from kickoff those of you joining us in east long meadow and canton i'm brady dolbeck alongside chad o'brien and we welcome you to lcat seems to be a bit of confusion over on the sideline so the game ref's gonna go over and check in to see what's what's going on with the sideline referee exchange a few words and looks like everything is all set now so kick off it's about to begin jake mccabe at the center dot getting ready to start this game up and we have begun canton starting off early sending the ball out wide luke mazza contesting on the sideline forces can't out of bounds and i apologize for in advance it's going to take me about 10 to 15 minutes to get canton's names down it's a little bit difficult to see them all the way up here field side in the booth ryan morneau sends the ball out field head ball mazza chasing it down and brugari comes up with the ball and boots it to half field jacob pichetto steps up kicks it back towards keller and keller puts it out of bounds east long metal throwing just around midfield [Music] and a throw in from shadow goes right to morneau mourinho out wide to biggins biggins finds mazzum as a one-touch pass looking for colin evans but it's stolen by shea and canton's able to clear it up sonny mazza and krugnali up on the ball a through ball up to sonny mazza and mazzag is called off sides it's gonna be a canton free kick for zach dowling right look there he's just got to stay on sides yeah you saw mel's got a lot of speed up top with sonny mazza colin evans and luke mazza so hopefully they'll be able to use them as some deadly weapons for tonight dowling's kick goes off of steven's head now canton making their way up field mccabe with it canton sends it out wide eagles chasing down ryan brunell defending eagles a cup move inside brunell staying right on him and brunel is able to win that battle great defensive play by ryan brunell and brunel still with the ball sends it out wide to colin evans evans is being chased down by shea evans a cup move back able to break shea off now evans working his way to the corner make a cross inside looking for sonny mazza and canton's forced to clear the ball out of bounds east long metal throwing for ben biggins big hands a long throw and inside the 18 comes right around the pk hash mark and is cleared out by canton luke mazza chasing it down on the far side and canton clears it to half field enzo mazza there to step up and mckinney with the throwing kirana off of his leg goes out of bounds canton moving very quickly up field voldavinos with the ball towards the flag he's got some running room crosses it inside goes through bigen's legs nobody home on back post ball stolen by eagles and broken up by biggins biggins makes a nice touch pass up to sonny mazza mazzle with a nice catch cut move and a self pass around dowling mazza gets a light shot on net and a save by rougary nice early christmas present on the ground for him and a line drive punt about half field goes right to patrick stevens head and jacob pachetta on the far sideline getting chased down by krugnalli moreno a chip pass through ball looking for sonny mazza chased down by satute and we apologize also in vance if we do butcher someone's name we are trying our best here and uh hopefully i get it right ben biggins with a throwing he launches it towards the side of the 18.

[Music] um flag salute it doesn't have a roll call we did roll calls in closed session so um in recognition of free speech and the following board agenda item we welcome all and would like to note that saying the pledge of allegiance is not a requirement to participate in the business of this public board if you do not say pledge for religious political social or personal reasons you are most welcome here as an equal participant in the business of the sport that said if you would like to join us please write hello pledge i pledge allegiance to the heart of the united states of america and to your love for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all thank you all right the board met in closed session and had discussions related to labor uh negotiations and nothing was am i not allowed to say that no decisions for me um do we have a motion to adopt the agenda i have a point of order um about the agenda i'm just seeking information i noticed that the order of our agenda has changed significantly in terms of the placement of our board reports and i was just seeking clarification and a rationale for that shift it's usually located um right after public comments but it looks like it's been moved all the way down in the agenda to like the end of the meeting and i was just seeking to know more about that okay no problem um in the past this district has had their board reports at the end many other districts do that as well and i made a decision in the interest of keeping the agenda in a positive meeting in a positive light and move forward on the business of this agenda of this board which is to conduct school business that i felt that it was a better uh environment to have that at the end of the of the meeting and therefore people can choose to leave leave prior to that if they wish to that clearly yes i have a point of privilege on that i do want to express my discomfort um i think that given the the struggles that our board has had with decorum um that moving this item this particular item to the end of our meetings uh we'll just encourage more editorializing and commenting on meeting proceedings um in in the new um in the new format but i guess we'll have to see how it goes given that where that we're um making this change tonight for the first time since i've served here uh for almost over a year now standard in the past yeah no i i mean i understand what you're saying it could end up causing more uh conversation as it is right at this moment but i think in the long run i think we'll find that it'll be a little bit of a more positive environment for conducting our business so i'm hoping that's the change uh this is my last meeting as the at my last full meeting as the board president so mr whoever takes over uh you know one of our other trustees takes over as board president then uh if they want to change it again they can certainly do so but i'd really like to see if this uh helps us stay focused i have one more um prior i'm just apologizing for the adoption of the agenda um it's a point of parliamentary procedure i'm specifically looking at its business item e under section 14.

slideshow with you before i hand over the mic to them i'd like to introduce to you isaac santiago um and abby and i'd like to thank them and their families for bringing them here to share with the school board enjoy rosedale garden project jardin garden history during the spring of 2018 roosevelt garden was relocated and enhanced via the help of rotary after school program and volunteers garden in despair in spring of 2020 the pandemic hit and the garden was extremely neglected community volunteer days the rosedale community came on three occasions to work on cleaning up the garden on the weekends students parents and community members created vision what they hope for the future of the garden the input from the community members was used to continue enhancing the garden i i really like the garden because i love the fact that all the community of rosedale came to help and fix the garden up [Applause] hello my name is [Music] hi my name is santiago i'm in second grade i go to rosedale a few weeks ago there was a volunteer day at my school i decided to help with my family i painted the compost bins i hope to do more volunteering in the future [Applause] these are just some pictures of our volunteer days generous donations mulch wood for garden boxes dirt and bark volunteers and labor future plans of the garden composting students working in garden at recess class projects ngss stem extension of our wellness center after school broke down after school program activities providing fresh food for the cafeteria my name is abigail the garden is a really pretty place and it makes me happy to be in nature it had is hey you know what everybody who gets in front of an audience for the first time gets a little teary-eyed everybody it's true but you know what's awesome you just did it in two languages so hats off to you that was outstanding good job well i'll help complete the slideshow and then joe can speak a little bit but we named the garden jardin esperanza in spanish which means garden of hope our teachers voted on that students came up with some ideas and then we voted on that name and we call it the garden of hope because of the different ways we're going to use it to encourage students to learn more about how food is produced we actually already harvested our first crop and the students ate the lettuce in the cafeteria and we're going to be using it for our wellness center as well just to help students who need to be regulated to take a walk and relax all right and i think that completes our presentation we're excited um i think you saw the renovation and it had a complete transformation so we we want to thank all the community members who came out and helped and volunteered and joanna kind of took the garden on that was her special project her one of her first projects when she came on this year so we're happy to have the garden looking great and the kids are just dying to get out there every day at lunch recess there we get a call on milwaukee it's today garden day the kids are asking for you joanna so it's been really great and the kids are eating it in the cafeteria so we're excited thank you i do want to say yeah well i just wanted to thank our students for being here it is a nerve-wracking to have to speak in front of so many people but you were fabulous and you will continue to do this and get better and better but the fact you're doing it in two languages is just amazing so thank you parents for bringing the students you are welcome to stay but if you need to get home and do homework you can do that as well okay uh we're going to move on as we do at each of our regular board meetings we really like we've seen examples of outstanding student work and our wonderful students and we like to recognize staff who help get our students to that point so we're going to start off tonight with kristen schrock from little chico creek hi good evening my name is kristen choc and i appreciate the opportunity being here um i haven't spoken with you yet and in a mask so forgive me i'm here tonight to take the opportunity to tell you a little bit about one of our wonderful staff members at little chico creek she thinks she's here to tell you how smoothly things are going at our school but actually we're here to honor her um so lisa gampell came to our school about five years ago as our attendance clerk and quickly she became an integral part of our office she went over and beyond she did things um just to help teachers she went to over and beyond to help students one example of how quickly she became part of our school early on when she joined our staff she came back she left at two o'clock every day she came back for a band performance and this is a woman who has children of her own at home she came back to school to watch a band performance just because she wanted to support our students and get to know them better and that was my first clue that we had a really special person on our hands in the spring of 2020 as everybody went into lockdown and pivoted into online learning lisa became our long-term office manager sub and that position is a really difficult position anyway to learn it on the fly and to learn it as we are all figuring out whatever remote learning looks like she did an amazing job having to really recreate that position asking so many of our staff members what describes lisa the words that kept coming up over and over were kindness patience professionalism efficient fun caring loving she is truly the first person and the face of little chico creek she does a beautiful job to make all of our families feel welcome all of our students and our staff another example of what a gem she is just this afternoon she came into my office waving her job description she said you know i've never really read this before and apparently i need to be doing a lot more for you than i am so what would you like me to do and so she doesn't know this but when we come back from break she's taking on all the discipline but really i'm just appreciative of the chance to honor her with superintendent's award tonight so lisa um everyone behind you loves you and we appreciate you thank you so much [Applause] i would like to give you this certificate and water bottle to keep hydrated i'm a whole bunch of people back [Applause] group picture i'd now like to welcome up to the podium mike allen principal at chapman elementary school snap this moment in time right all right hello everyone so tonight we're here to celebrate a teacher who has been in education for 33 years 30 years right here in chico unified within that time she's only worked at two schools rosedale and chapman she's been teaching as long as some of my teachers have been alive i first met laura manning when she was on the sports boosters at chico high and she was passionate then just as passionate as she is today she's one of the hardest working teachers i've ever met she's the one teacher that i have to go check her classroom before i leave and tell her to go home before i leave every night she cares about everyone she cares about the students the staff and even her administrator laura manning or as we like to call her mama manny is one of a kind i never have to worry about her when she's in her classroom the only time i do have to worry about her is when she's in my office because she tells it like it is and usually she's right not all the time but most of the time any one of us would elect would love to have a career like laura manning's and as many of you already know she's planning on retiring at the end of this year still trying to get her to stay one more year one more year one more year um so we are losing one of the best teachers i've ever had the pleasure of working with and i will personally miss working with one of my good friends so laura manning it's my absolute pleasure to nominate you for the superintendent's award [Applause] just turn around i had the pleasure of observing the morning in laura manning's classroom absolutely not only inspiring but i was exhausted by the time i left watching what she was able to do with all those little kindergartners thank you laura for everything you've done thank you board for allowing us to honor our employees and thank you to all of our staff that turned out to support our two honorees it's really appreciated so with that i will turn it back to you president robinson thank you on to item six announcements i have two dr kaiser yes i had the privilege of being at the open house for cte at pv high school this is an enormous building and renovation that was funded by the community and by grants written by several of the major teachers here culinary arts you not only got to look at it you got to eat it take it with you the medical unit had students in there athletes who had been banged up during practice and were getting treated and then the sports medicine area really have all of the information that a student might need to practice and potentially think about taking on a medical career so that was very very impressive and i encourage all of you if you get the chance to do the tour i've heard now from two different people that the vendors the vendors said they have never seen anything at this level from here to san francisco and maybe even we show up san francisco so quite spectacular so thanks to all the teachers the students and of course our facilities people who just did a phenomenal job all right thank you miss dolby i don't really want to follow that up because that's a lot worth celebrating um so uh the presentation by our rosedale folks actually reminded me that um i just wanted to make sure that everybody in our school community knows that butte environmental council offers uh composting workshops in addition to our recycling and oil recycling workshops additionally we just added a new program through butte county um that is for community air protection so these are interactive workshops where an instructor comes in for a day and and spends the day teaching students about those things and it's anywhere from kindergarten all the way on up and it's levelized for a grade level appropriate curriculum so if there's any interest out there for those composting workshops as we build our composting bins super excited that butte environmental council offers that so feel free to reach out to the organization thank you anyone else okay thank you our next item is item number seven items from the floor i believe we have ten signed up bill do we have a those are actually under 10.1.3 so we have no items from the floor we do have speakers under items 10.1.3 that's what my note says okay so we are on then to number eight negotiations update mr hanlon i have nothing new to report at this time we will be meeting um with cota on december 9th and we are have some tentative dates with csea soon thank you i i do just want to note um we've been discussing with csea some increases in some of the classified positions salaries and i noticed it was up on our website today so i would suggest anyone who has someone out there in the community that's interested in i believe we have custodial custodians instructional aides bus ride law ride-alongs um nutrition and was there another one campus supervisors okay positions are available yeah the the information is all up on the website i i'd like to just add that i'd strongly encourage anybody that knows college students out there that some of these jobs would be really ideal for a part-timer who's trying to pay their way through college too so you know look into it because there's a lot of really good opportunity there with the district thank you okay we're on now to our consent calendar um the consent calendar can be acted on in one motion but we need first to find out if anyone would like to pull anything off of the consent calendar okay no one stepping forward then i need a motion i moved the passing of the consent calendar i have a motion from dr kaiser a second from mr landau all those in favor board members by by boys dalby aye robinson i landed tennis eye thank you board five zero our discussion action calendar we have item 10.1.1 this is the first reading of a revised updated new board policy ms daly you're going to introduce this again this is our second reading so this is actually this is a there's two items on here the first one is a brand new batch of 19 policies this is the first reading for that new batch so we will be bringing this back in december for approval from the board but at this point it's the opportunity so that our public and board can see the revisions and have the opportunity to comment on them either through public comment via email or sharing at our next board meeting we do ask that if there are suggested revisions from the board please be sure to share those with staff and we look forward to bringing these back at our december meeting okay thank you uh number two discussion action now we're at 10.1.2 this is the policy that we had in the first reading at the last meeting ms keane is tina going to actually well she if there are questions uh tina'd be happy to address those this is the second reading so if there are any questions please feel free to ask those or if there's suggestions for revisions otherwise we can move forward as presented it was pretty straightforward we didn't have any questions last time are there any now have we had any requests for public comment we have not okay are there any motions associated with this item board i need a motion to approve this is the second reading [Music] i move approval i have a motion from mr lando a second from doctor oh ventriloquism going on here okay a motion from mr tennis a second from dr kaiser no further discussion hey all those in favor signify by saying i thank you board that was five to nothing i can't see erica but i assume she's getting this okay we're good okay our next item is um discussion action resolution number 1560-21 a resolution calling for state officials to honor exemptions for the covid19 vaccine for students and staff mr hanlon actually i'll go ahead and take that one at our last board meeting the board requested staff to draft a resolution that honors exemptions for the kovid 19 vaccine for both students and staff attached is a draft resolution as always this is a draft and the board does have the ability to review and make changes this was a draft written by staff and i will be very honest we are i cut and pasted from different examples from across the state including the durham example that was mentioned at the board meeting so with that i will turn it back over to the board for discussion okay thank you board members do we have anyone who would like to speak to or ask questions regarding the resolution that's being presented mr tennis um i'd like to before we move into public comment if we're close to that i have a statement that i'd like to address the public it's it's your you've got prior to it so um um i feel that the board has quite a bit of clarity on what the issues are uh surrounding this proposed resolution i just want you the audience to know that i think that um that the testimony we received from the public two weeks ago was was in my opinion pretty well received by the board we took action to draft the resolution and i was pleasantly surprised by the feeling and the tenor in the room the reason i'm saying this is because without having spoken to any of my colleagues my crystal ball is telling me that some version of this resolution is going to pass tonight um i i don't have a crystal ball but um to the extent that i do that's that's what i'm seeing in it so i'm just telling you that so that you don't have to feel each one of you that you need to use your entire three minutes if you want to just get up and simply state you know some simplified version of your position we've had a lot of time i think to stew in this issue so i just wanted to make that statement so we didn't feel like we needed to drag it out for no particular reason that's all kind of like i just did you get to sit up here and do that sir we have 10 requests for addressing item 10.1.3 it's all yours guys okay our first speaker is a student jericho bertina in person jericho can interrupt you just for a second just a reminder madam president can you explain the rules for this evening um each speaker is is allotted three minutes you you can take it all or you can choose not to their timing will be at 30 seconds left the yellow card will go up when your three minutes is up the red card will go up and the floor is all yours thank you hi my name is jericho bertagna i'm a freshman at chico high and all i want to say is your rights to choose a good vaccinator just as important as my rights to choose not to get the covet vaccine thank you our next our next speaker okay next we have christy rose christy rose in person hi um i'll be really quick my daughter goes to school here at marigold and she's excelling emotionally and academically and i would like her to stay here in the event a vaccine mandate was passed i wouldn't feel comfortable doing that and i'd have to pull her out of school which i don't think would be in her best interest and i think that goes for a lot of the other parents too so um i just am hoping you guys can do everything in your power to keep our children safe thank you next speaker our next speaker is joe hughes in person joe hughes good evening yeah go ahead and raise it that's fine i'll just do one of these i appreciate the gentleman's comments and i'm certainly hoping that that the resolution does move forward um my son is a senior at pv high school and um he's having a great he's having a great year being back in school we moved over here from lake county where online learning wasn't working basically the whole county shutdown it's kind of a different world over here so we're definitely appreciative of that i just hope that the school board when you guys think about the impact of what this does and why our world has been turned upside down um and and truly know that it's it hasn't ever really been about health it's been about power it's been about money it's so there's so many arbitrary things the fact that we can go into restaurants and sit down and eat not wear a mask but put it on when you go to the bathroom the our governor going out to eat at the french laundry because it's such a dangerous thing there's just so many examples of things that have been bad i've been a firefighter paramedic for 22 years i have not missed a single day of work i see people with aids hepatitis norovirus covid all these things every day i'm at work and i haven't missed a single day of work so it's not this overwhelmingly deadly thing that they want us to believe that it is um kovit is here to stay like the flu and everything else we've got to learn how to live with it we've got to choose are we going to live or are we going to stay hidden in a shelter and a bomb shelter waiting waiting to be bombed for a metaphor life is about living and we should not be sacrificing our kids risking our kids or our employment because we will or won't get a vaccine it's about choice we're americans this is what it's about that's why we're the greatest country in the world because we have the ability to make these choices and and choose how we want to live me keeping able to keep my job as a firefighter i have to currently i have to be tested or i've got to be vaccinated yet somebody who's homeless or draws welfare and unemployment doesn't have to be tested therein lies another hypocritical thing so i realized i didn't mean to take this much time but please think about those things and life is about living let us live it and let us make our own choices thank you our next speaker okay our next speaker is james bishop james bishop hello i'm back conveying 2500 hours of research three minutes at a time um so i had in the past argued that i hope convincingly that the the elements behind all of the things that have happened are very political and not very much about health not because there's no health issue but because the nature of the enforcement revealed itself as political i use the teachers unions the only kind of teaching statements about defunding the police and closing all the charter schools in order to get kids back to school as one example i i talked about the emails that showed collusion between the cdc and the teachers unions in order to keep schools closed all year when virtually no science was supporting that idea last time i was here i showed that this when the cdc advisory committee met to vote on the vaccine they very clearly said we should not administer this thing to the general population of kids and we should definitely absolutely not mandate this they said it very clearly they went so far as to explain that these comparisons with the mrr and other vaccines as justifications were did not make any sense and were not appropriate the cdc then met the advisory panel and similarly made very similar statements and then rochelle wilinski came along and said let's give it to everybody and then newsome says let's force the kids to take it so today this is slightly different but i think it's related if you think about it osha suspended implementation and enforcement of biden's covet mandate and the fifth circuit court which it originally said there's grave statutory and constitutional issues with this mandate then the bite administration came back and said made some arguments and they responded today i believe saying that that this osha concept this ocean forcing this thing was a staggering overboard staggering the overboard overreach and um ordered it to take no steps to implement or enforce the mandate until further court order so you might wonder like you know when i was growing up neither democrats nor republicans would put themselves in a position to have people just go you idiot this is completely unconstitutional what are you doing i mean that's essentially what's happened and there was some foreshadow that the bite administration even knew that that would probably happen so what is going on you know it's kind of what i'm asking you guys um when i grew up you know i like grew up during the aids pandemic and i remember there was this oh we should close the bath houses you know because it was i mean this had a ten thousand times higher case mortality rate than cove you know to put it in context and we didn't really know where it was going to go what was going to happen but people on the left said no that would be a severe infringement on people's liberties and rights that's a slippery slope you know and looking back i think i agree with the left on that and then after after 9 11 there was all this talk of like we are going down some dangerous roads we're putting infrastructure in place which is going to deprive people their liberties and freedoms and their privacy and looking back i think they were right so i don't know if there's any democrats here i think there's at least four here and i just want to ask you like what the hell happened thank you next speaker next speaker is renee gramps renee gramps hi everybody thank you again for your time um was here last time and it was it was a lot of a lot of education floating around the room that day was a lot of fun i'm here obviously in support of the choice resolution i'm part of pam the parents against mandates and we're trying to unify all these school districts in butte county to have the same resolution and that's just pro-choice that people get to decide whether to you know move forward or not and i don't even know if i'm allowed to do this but maybe just by a show of hands if this doesn't pass tonight i'm curious how many are even or if you're willing or interested in removing your children from school by a raise of hands just wanted you guys to see that thank you speaker our next speaker is prairie francia hello so i guess i'm just a little bit confused i felt like last time we were pretty clear that we wanted what she was just talking about the united uh butte united where we just say that we don't want to mandate at all but it sounds like you guys are just voting to enforce um the recognition of the exemptions is that correct that's it the resolution is in the board packet yeah so i'm just like not totally understanding so i don't know i i just wanted to put that out there that we really hope that it's not just enforcing like of course it's going to be enforced because that's what it says it has to be enforced but we should be united on this one i feel like madam president may be recognized um we will get a chance as a board to discuss keep her question in mind and um see if if you can talk to we're not supposed to back and forth dialogue with speakers actually my understanding is that only applies to com items from the floor that we don't respond to speakers and actually i wasn't intending to respond to the speaker but just for point of clarification i think that that's only for items from the floor that we don't interact with speakers okay you're not comfortable with discussing the item next i'm sorry um the board's discussion will happen next i was going to offer that staff could maybe clarify for her what the substance of this resolution is we will be doing that under the next part of the agenda as lengthy as you choose to okay well we're still standing to be united with like durham and the other schools to completely say no we don't want the mandate at all thank you next baker okay the next speaker is patrick conklin patrick conklin evening while i have two children that attend chico unified i'm also here to speak to you tonight as a school district administrator and a neighboring county i've experienced all of the same things that you've faced these last 20 months and understand the challenges you continue to deal with during this pandemic but tonight i'm here to respectfully ask that you passed this resolution we all know the data shows that children generally are not at risk of hospitalization or death of the 600 000 cases in children under 18 only 37 have died although that is tragic this equates to about zero fatality rate several of the fda advisory committee members responsible for voting to recommend the vaccine for children five to eleven express concern regard regarding a mandatory vaccine for children to attend in-person instruction chico unified has operated in-person instruction since october 2020 safely without a vaccine with little to no transmission on campus when following the current health and safety guidelines chico unified community members have expressed concerns regarding the vaccine including the lack of research long-term impacts on children many indicate their children would not attend in-person instruction if the vaccine was mandated the impact on kids not being in school is far greater than the health risks associated with the virus if a vaccine is required in lieu of weekly testing for staff the district will struggle to retain qualified employees for both certificated and classified positions i personally believe the vaccine is safe and in most cases serious prevents serious illness or death in adults and children which is why i'm vaccinated my 13 year old is vaccinated and someday my younger may as well however this vaccine is not an effective way to prevent transmission over half the staff members in my district who have contracted covid in the last three months were fully vaccinated none of the current immunizations required for in-person instruction under sb 277 have six-month boosters which makes this vaccine very different than the other 10.

chris did you uh that cpi changed from july 2020 to july 2021 is that pulled from the bureau of labor statistics yep it's the cbi uh you which is the urban wage which i think we decided previously was most comparable to foreign yeah can you also clarify chris i can't remember since we do this every two years would whatever percentage we determine then let's say it's three percent would the three percent occur in each of the then the two years so that the second year would have a three percent increase over what we're approving for the upcoming year yeah you can structure it any way you want it was chosen to do that way with an average and then keep it the same for both years just for simplicity's sake okay so it's it's a rough it's a rough approximation yeah but you can do whatever you want okay if we stuck to the uh for lack of a better word formula or framework that we um agreed upon last time uh this change in your example here would be to reset what we have in our current draft resolution for 2023 uh to the new numbers am i understanding that right yeah this sort of yeah the resolution you have before before you is not this so you have to amend it to make it this if you wanted to okay thank you so i i would like to say i this seems more accurate to me um especially since it's been applied over over two a two year span and not just a one-year span uh this i mean it already seems the council members salaries already seem low to me anyway based on the amount of work that they do and i think we are all aware that they do an incredible amount of work especially um you know you i mean when you see people just constantly out there and communicating with their constituents and really really working hard i you know it certainly doesn't feel like a part-time job to me um i i don't know how much and i know that that you've stayed away from looking at other cities but when i was looking through all of the data that chris provided i noticed that lansing seem seemed like a good um comparable city i don't know how much work the um lansing city council members are doing um compared to what our city council members are doing but it's a similar population but they have 13 fewer meetings and they're at 25 19.

but some of you told me um that you might have some homework to do tonight so if you have some reading or math work to do okay [Applause] mhm [Music] there must be a lot of them [Music] um [Music] uh other than saying i think pretty much everybody knows the unfortunate set of circumstances that affected the thanksgiving football game between the men's school and fall has been resolved in the sense that conclusion will continue they also spoke about uh and also they said that there were 11 student athletes who had some members division 1 and 20 different schools on the way so having watched this tonight chris and i speak in regards to mrs jones concern regarding edi in the last meeting we didn't again get together but we're committed to review the compliance support uh professional development and make use of the research and the resources that miss love have and to continue to monitor it and for sure a formal meeting and a more complete report will be provided in december okay thank you kurt any questions for her okay uh joe go bins and grants nothing new to report thank you dave personally uh yes we have as you can see on the agenda we have many many policies on the agenda tonight um some for a second reading and we have many for um a first reading tonight so everyone has gotten the report and i think that we will probably be here you know until 10 o'clock what christmas said if i start to go and review all of the policies but i did want to discuss a few of them that i think that um faith you know warrant some attention um so as you can see when you look at the report many of the policies were on language changes minor reviews minor changes but some are more significant so for example on the first policy tonight is 2422 and this one is comprehensive health and physical education it's a mandated policy and uh this policy had a name change it used to be health and physical education and it's changed a lot so one of the one of the biggest changes is that the state has added six new statutes um and i'll just quickly go over them one is uh the first one is sexual abuse and assault awareness and prevention and education the second one is curriculum to include instruction on diversity and inclusion the third is incorporation of age appropriate instruction relative to consent for physical contact and sexual activity number four is health curriculum to include instruction on mental health uh five is information about new jersey's safe haven infant protection act included in public school curriculum that one actually is for high school level that doesn't apply to us the next one is number six uh confusion of african-american accomplishments into school curriculum um this we discussed uh during our meeting we had a lot of discussion around this um sean had some questions on regarding how this would be done and i won't speak for you sean but um and so um so and i just want to make it clear that this is a mandated policy when we get mandated policies it's a mandate from the state sometimes we can make some revisions to it modifications so that it can align with our school but it's a mandated policy and we approve the policy um what this policy is saying um it's we're approving that the state is telling us mandating us to include those six new statutes into the curriculum we're not approving a curriculum and we have this discussion we're not approving the curriculum and um that will come later the um all of these statues will be reviewed by the supervisor of curriculum and instruction and her team that usually starts about january where they take a look at it they take a look at the standards they start to unpack those standards and it's it's a long process it's a lot of work they take a look at recommended resources from the state and then they take a look at their own and when they work on this curriculum um they will find to decide what's best for our kids after school and then we have a meeting with curriculum and program we take a look at that curriculum because you know these are some sensitive topics you know anytime we're talking about um you know anything involving with um you know any kind of sexual abuse assault awareness those are really sensitive topics how are we going to teach that to a kindergarten child well there are ways um to be able um to to teach that um so i just wanted to sort of make that goodness can you expand a little bit on and maybe it's like you're just talking about that one bullet point that was about um conceptual consent is that what you talking about that's one of them that's one of them so um let me just yes so the the sexual princing and i found i actually got the law on this so we could get a clear understanding of what it means so um so the consent it requires age-appropriate instructions in grades 6-12 on the law and meaning of consent for physical contact and sexual activity that's part of the district's implementation of the new standards the instructions shall be designed to increase discussion and awareness that consent to require before physical contact or sexual activity as well as the social emotional and relational impact surrounding sexuality the right to say no to unwanted physical contact or sexual activity and the virtues of respecting the right of others to say no i i wanted to you you mentioned like my question i was kind of baked in there appropriate and you know those are the things that when our supervisor curriculum when this love sits with 13 they're going to be unpacking that stand and they'll and some are appropriate for middle school and others or not so um there are many ways of teaching them can i ask another question sure this is just the semantic sort of orthodontic radiations here so after every one of these there's either an m and r an n a new or an abolish what are those what are those all means so um so that's a good question so in is a mandated policy those are the policies they're mandated by the state and we we approve those um policies um and it doesn't mean that we don't question the policies because many times do so that we can get a better understanding of what the state is expecting us to do the r is a revised policy and that we have abolished the abolish policies are the ones that um there's no there's there's no longer any use for those policies for a lot of times what happens is the information of one policy is transferred over to another policy so they just abolish it um and then and nuke is it's a brand new yeah that's that's what that one is owners policing regulation are you seeing in front so the work that the team will be putting together to get the job into the classrooms for this school year or for next school year it will be for next school year they'll be working on that for next week now there are when it comes to number six the infusion of african-american accomplishments into school curriculum um for for comprehensive health and physical ed that will probably come in september of next year they'll go work on that however um because that is um that's already a mandate and that's been amanda and that's what i talked about last week that's been a mandate for years and so on and you know to say that our school is not compliant um but you know like um you know like we talked about last time i met with miss love and she is working on you know working on the infusion of african-american studies so that you should be seen this year does the new one conflict anyway but you mentioned the one that went placed in 2002 no it's not it doesn't complete yeah and you know what happened back in the department of education saw a need for it and in the beginning people were doing it but then after a while it really wasn't being done and many districts weren't compliant so then they had to then revise it um and so now once again you know they're they're reminding us that um we need to make sure that we're complying with this and so talking about infusing uh african-american contributions this so for example um and i you know there's been some talk about whether or not i'm advocating for um critical race theory and all of that stuff like that right some questions and emails about so i just want to clarify um to the community that i'm not advocating for critical race theory that's a whole separate thing and i have my opinions about that but i'm not discussing that today um we're not teaching that at the elementary school level um so for example one way that we would infuse african american history is that okay so november 14 we celebrate uh ruby bridges um it was she was six years old and it was in 1960 that she entered on the all-white school that was segregated it's supported by um officials and so what rumi bridges who's still alive which is awesome um one of the things that she's doing and there are some states that are um that have approved this it's called um ruby bridge's walk to school day and it was actually today so there were some states and they participated in this event where you know in order to honor um such a courageous american like her they all had that walk to school day which i think is an awesome thing and it's something that we can that's something that we could do you know next year look into doing something like that but there are lessons around ruby bridges and so this is a way that we're looking to infuse and incorporate and embed african-american history into our curriculum so i just wanted to share that example i thought that was going to share um all right so 24 so that's what's going on with this on this policy 24-22 um but you know i i did some research um because like i said that there are very there's sensitive topics that our kids are being taught and um a lot of this was came about because of the sexual sexual assaults and abuse that happened to our kids um that happened and it's been happening it's nothing new unfortunately it's been happening for a long time um to our teenagers boys and girls and so this you know this is in response to the to the issue of sexual assault is to teach our kids teach her kids to psychology teach her kids how to protect themselves and um so this is the basis for teaching our kids this um so okay any questions about that one or okay um so tonight i'm asking that we approved it for a first reading um unless anyone has any concerns about it and then we can work whatever it is you want to any questions you have about it we can discuss it and you know during committing and then we'll have next month during our board meeting for a second week i do want to discuss it and i would request that it gets submitted separately from the other policies and karen i don't know when the appropriate time to discuss it is any concerns that we can have with it but i am going to ask for it to be a separate tonight is just right now i don't have questions so much as statements to make about it you can make a statement about it okay so this is a very sensitive as the dollar said first of all look at the number of policies that came through there's a ton of work that the dollar's going to go through the last couple of weeks so thank you this is a lot in here there's a lot of good for sure i will say that it's very odd how the state has done this taking what was a health and physical education policy added comprehensive to it i think that has implications in terms of how this will be rolled out and i just wanted to dig a little deeper into a couple of things specifically number 19 and number 21 in this policy number 19 being sexual abuse and assault awareness which on the surface sounds like of course why would we not want to enable our kids with the tools they need to prevent that and number 21 the one that you asked about dr d rozio was consent to physical contact so i looked at the statues on these and it's true that they do say age appropriate and the first one the statute 8 18a3504a that talks about preschool through grade 12.

the idea here is to listen to the kids and to ask them to provide input on the kind of school where they would learn best so what you see before you is a tool that i created to hear from our younger students the elementary students and i ask them two things i ask them to share the kind of school where everyone feels known valued respected where they are a welcome and essential member of that school community tell me about a school with heart then i asked them to talk about the ways that teachers teach so that they learn and what you see here is from a school district that i worked with in the past these are all all of the things that you see here comes from the input of the students so when i met with the elementary kids they were i mean amazing to they are so spot on they're so honest as you see they're filling out their thoughts their insights their input and i have an opportunity for them to talk with each other i collect all of that data and include that in this strategic planning process now everyone knows that you can't use that sheet with middle school and high school kids you gotta cool it up so i do this is from middle school and high school students in another district where i did the strategic planning process once again the words of the students are incredibly insightful and powerful and if we want to create schools where students want to come and where they learn it's important to hear what they have to say so this is some of the middle school students who were engaged in that process and of course i work alongside the leadership in each of the schools to make sure it's done in a way that is comfortable that is appropriate to the particular school as i mentioned it's also essential to listen to faculty so this is uh one of the school districts where i did the the input session with the faculty members so they sit in rows each person is asking and answering essential questions about the strengths the areas to improve their aspirations and so forth they then kind of if you look at it it looks a lot like speed dating not that i would know personally but each person has a chance to interact with the other person now i want to say i understand this is in a post-covet environment we can certainly do this three feet apart and with masks i am very open and amenable to doing the input sessions in whatever way you deem appropriate for your context here is where the teachers the community members it's run in the same way regardless of the participants where they have a chance to synthesize and then report out on the answers to their questions this process uses complete transparency everyone who is in the room has an opportunity to hear from every voice that's in the room it is dynamic it brings a lot of energy and people absolutely love it this is an a picture from another community this is little falls where i believe that we had 80 people come out and share their voices and provide their input into the process so all of this then is synthesized organized into strengths and areas for attention i then offer recommendations for goal setting and action planning where ultimately we seek to develop what's called a three-year plan on a page much of the contemporary thinking is about creating plans that are succinct versatile knowable and actionable not the giant tome or a big dissertation that's kind of done once and then placed on the shelf the idea is to create an actionable plan that's used to guide decision making goal setting and that becomes the driver that helps lead cliffside park to the achievement of their goals so that's a very succinct overview of the process it involves a lot of hours on site and behind the scenes and again its intention is to culminate in something that is useful to you that is valuable to valuable to the community and that helps guide your future planning so i'm open to uh to answering any questions if you may have anyone from the board there will be questions that the board will have and any information along the way i'll be sharing with them and hopefully maybe once we get into it you can um come visit before and give them an update as well oh yes the process definitely i will definitely be on site and available i i'm really excited about this i'm really passionate about the work and i think that that your community will enjoy both the process and benefit from the outcome okay thank you very much thank you thank you thank you good night everyone thank you good night okay so um at this time what i'd like to do is uh ask any board members if they have any committee reports uh lou if you'd be kind enough to just give us an update i know uh we've had some hiccups with the the high school uh gym uh reha you know upgrades i know public service was a thorn in our side it looks like the poll is up looks like the inspectors because i had made a call they came out and uh inspected the trenches and they looked like they were going to backfill it today uh if you can just give us an update so we know where we are and what the possible projections are of completion poll was set uh about a week or so ago as you know joe uh the trench the conduit it was inspected and approved by two inspectors public service and our own borough inspector now they they've got to close it up and uh the based on this there's going to be a new timeline coming out we're meeting next tuesday uh to go through the new timeline but it looks like you know uh plus or minus we're to obviously we're going to lose november and probably the month of december in regard to having the capability of having access to the gym but we'll get more definitive timeline dates when we meet next tuesday that's where we are right now budget wise we are we are spot on there's really no uh incremental change orders above and beyond the core bid specs uh which is always good news uh for me but as you know as you alluded to uh public service has been a challenge since the summer we've done our best to engage other folks who who also tried to help us expedite the timeline so to speak with them i think there's finally some good news is like i said they set the poll engaged the trench we're ready to close the trend so we've seen some movement over the last few weeks so based on that movement we'll get an updated timeline which we'll talk about on tuesday and then we will share with the committee obviously and share with the board mr porfido mr pinto uh and mr porphido uh had meetings with myself and mr roman gino in regard to what's our plan now that you know we've lost the month of november we lost the month of december uh november there's tryouts this coming monday november 22nd and then there's actually practice november 29th so we actually had to make an opportunity for the basketball program to kind of move forward so we've engaged the middle school and we have a process and a plan in place so we we kind of hit the ground running when the tryouts and the practices start specific to the middle school we took a look at the bible court we took a look at the hoops to make sure they're all working they go up and down we had a vendor come in to do some proactive work in regard to making sure the hoops are where they need to be because right now that's really the only space that the high school can kind of like i said conduct their tryouts conduct their practices so we'll have further updates after our meeting with tuesday with uh land associates and smac thank you you're welcome any questions from the board regarding um mr capano's summary of the high school gym okay so uh at this time what i'd like to do is look at the consent agenda um going over to page two as always we are approving uh staff members uh reimbursement for professional development uh you'll notice conquer math uh comes up quite a bit it's a program that we have our staff involved with this year it's back to um in person where our uh i'll make that motion thank you scott tyson second thank you camera please yes yes tyson sir yes yes perk thank you motion all right item b is our approval for years of service record i think that's all in your packet and that is a yearly uh report we send it out to the faculty and staff they then make any corrections we update it um tweak it here and there but the administration recommends that the service report be approved as presented looks like it's all about one year more than last year for the most part every once in a while there's there's there's somebody that there's a question you have to look up but perfect any questions on the years of service report that entertain a motion to approve the report as presented i'll make a motion to approve the years of service record thank andrew for a second second thanks scott kim roll call please andrea cory yes frank meyer yes hi lisa schumacher yes and search yes yes all right item c is our approval to post public notice to sell school buses we bought school buses now we sell school buses we well we have two school buses that we will be trading in next year as we go through the rotations and we buy new buses one bus is worth a thousand dollars as a trade-in value the other bus is worth nothing is a trade-in value what i've done previously at other places is you put a notice in the paper you say you know for the one bus that i know i can get a trade in for a thousand dollars we say we'd like to um have sealed bids sent to the district office if you should want this bus thousand dollars are best offer and we'll we'll then give it to the person that gives us the highest bid um regarding the other bus there will be no minimum bid you might be able to get that bus for a dollar but it's a dollar more than i can get if i would trade it in um and so what does somebody want an old used bus for i've seen people put it out on their property for um hunting they they go in there for uh to keep out of the woods tailgating it you know i i'm not here to judge what people want it for i know i can get a thousand dollars for these buses as a trade-in if somebody in the community wants to give us more money for them i i think that we allow the community to have at it i'll get more than that scrap metal what's that you can get more than that scrap metal right right as i am put in a bid sir we'll take them sealed and then on the day that it opens we we look at it because it's not an auction it's just you give me what you think you're willing to pay for it it's you know i have a better idea what's your better idea a website called gov deals where they sell school buses all the time you definitely can set a minimum so you can whatever but it's restricted to government entities anyway so school districts so individuals can't sell on here and uh gov deals gets three times what an average market does on there so i didn't realize the price was that low on these are the gas or diesel or i believe they're both gas they're both gas okay yeah you know a year off hand they do not they're both they still operational do you think they're both gas um it is a small bus and a large bus i believe all our large buses were decent but that and anyway okay now i think we bought do we know what year the small buses by chance i don't okay i i'm very experienced in bus prices so i can probably help you with that but i didn't again i didn't realize that i was going to ask where the public notice was i wanted to see if it was an auction type or whatever so now what we would do is just say our best you know you you send us an amount that you'd like i know nothing about gov deals so do we want to table this until next month and you and i all have some conversations what does the board think i mean i'd like to see what the buses are i mean because i'm with you i think that you know there's there's a market especially for anything vehicle related at the moment right so you know the market for school buses so anything air conditioned is worth ten times non-air because it's just a better deal but certain school bus certain school districts have regulations where they can only operate buses with so many years model years okay so if ours are within that thing they're a lot more valuable as well so yeah i think we probably need to table this and we're all in agreement though that we do not want to trade them in we're going to want to either go through gov deals or i'm familiar with cub deals as well so okay a lot of them yeah we don't want to give them away exactly i don't have enough share next month sheriff's department cities uh yeah there's directions yeah exactly right it's true all right all right cool perfect all right items nine is our discussion items the first one should be a quickie the is iasb resolutions which there's only like what 29.

a head ball for mazza inside looking for evans and rougary comes up with a save and throws it to the far sideline luke mazza there to steal it off of crude nals krugnalli's foot krugnale is forced to kick the ball out of bounds off of mazza it's gonna be an east song middle throwing for jacob ruschetta on the far sideline the shadow a light throw into karana being contested by keller and keller touches it out of bounds another east long metal throwing for jacob pacietto bushetta a long throwing all the way inside goes to the pk mark sonny mazz is able to chess it down but can't get a clean foot on it and it's cleared out by canton patrick stevens with it and he forced to touch it out of bounds throwing for the bulldogs mccabe running up the far sideline and maz is able to back check him force the ball out of bounds but it's still mccabe and he's going to get a quick throw in and looks like there was a whistle on the play mccabe looked to be a little uh cheating a little bit trying to get some extra yardage on that sideline into the off defensive zone of east longmeadow can't quite do that mr mccabe and now voldevinos was looking for that shot unfortunately that is called back now bulldogs working to the far corner eagles on brunell and eagles let that one go out it's going to be a corner kick for the canton bulldogs 34 minutes remaining in this first half yeah big opportunity for the bulldogs early and ahead and a head ball out from morneau comes right back out to mckinney look kenny and giroux is there to come up with a stop he's going to allow his team to reset a high punt from him goes way past half field right to satoot's head it's a tout excuse me and a clear to patrick stevens baird with the ball he's got some room looking out wide switching fields and ben biggins able to break up the passing attempts looking for eagles eagles is able to come up with a steal touch pass out wide to mckay mccabe's going up the sideline ryan brunell is on him tries to get a touch pass with using his heel to eagles on the overlap given go ball was out of bounds off at east longmeadow and mccabe and eagles able to get the ball back to their defense canton moving the ball well at midfield shea goes out wide to keller and now an e song about a throw colin evans a chip pass up to brunel and that ball goes out of bounds off of canton east long metal throwing for ben biggins and some subs coming into the game number one mike monroe number 13 dante bates and it looks to be number 21 joe president for east longmeadow seeing their first appearance tonight thrawn from biggins it's headed down and eagles clears to midfield looking for krugnalli now a through ball up to mike monroe monroe is chased down by mckinney and ball goes out of bounds off of monroe when row is holding his side and he looks to be he looks to be in some pain over on the far sideline i saw when he was running he started grabbing onto his hip yeah i definitely looked a little bit funny and monroe is in visible pain as sonny mazza goes over to check on him that is not good for islam at all mike monroe is a valuable weapon especially his speed he had two assists in the game against nosset high school and two i mean some of the probably two of the biggest assists of his entire soccer career really i mean he's able to assist the tying goal in that game with five minutes remaining in regulation against gnostic high school to tie east long metal wind nos at three to three and eventually send it into double overtime and he also i believe was credited with the assists on the second goal as well yeah he's a talented player for sure so that would be juniors on this team yeah that would be a significant loss for east longmeadow if he's not able to continue in this game and he is certainly in some pain we saw him rolling around a little bit and the refs are checking in on him and now it looks like there's some trainers that are going to pay some attention to him so far during this game it's been pretty even there haven't been a lot of clean hard shots on net yet and they're gonna call an injury timeout yeah they're gonna call an injury timeout so monroe clearly with something serious going on over on the sideline that is not good for you though monroe this is not a characteristic thing of him he's normally doesn't go down easy he's a fighter and tough kid so hopefully everything is going to be okay and we're going to take a quick break we'll be back with you shortly you so welcome back to aztec stadium we uh just finished up mike monroe number one for east long meadow did leave on a stretcher and is heading into the ambulance looks to be a hip injury of some sorts when he was uh got that cross he chested the ball down and on that step during the chest down looks like his hip locked up on him and something happened in that region and he was uh hobbling for another i don't know chad maybe ten steps on his left foot trying to save himself and went down rolling around on the ground fire truck showed up ambulance and cop so hopefully he's okay uh we have 31 21 remaining in the first half of the soccer game but our prayers go out to mike monroe hopefully he's doing all right and this game has restarted mike monroe east longmeadow entering the offensive zone quickly colin evans a handball by sonny mazza and canton a free kick just about the top of their 18 box and giovanni rugari will be taking the kick he launches it just past half field looking for kugnali stolen by esau metal evans trying to fire it up and looks like there was a call on canton so nissan about a free kick enzo mazza with the ball now at half field he sends it up to more no more no touch inside joe presley gets a shot on that and it goes high and right what a scoring opportunity that freestyle meadow yes very barely missed fresno able to get a solid foot on it but not quite the uh accuracy he wanted yep just gotta slow down there and get a little bit better accuracy put it away so gary sends it just short of midfield and it's knead up by shea on the sideline [Music] is can't tell what number that is mccain across just misses the far post over ben giroux's head not sure what number that was on that shot but just missing the net i believe that was voldovinos on that cross ben drew with the goal kick now sends it to midfield headed back by baird stolen evans looking for joe presnel far corner ball is at midfield now canton voldovinos chasing down pachetta pochetto sends a sky-high cross over to president of the far corner president gets a header over to sunny mazza mazza across far post to brunel and brunell just misses the net goes right over the crossbar a great pass there he was able to get on brunel's foot and brunel a little bit of a tough angle there to try and bury it but an excellent scoring opportunity free slalom meadow gary there to shut down the angle forcing brunel to go up top and brunel puts it just over the crossbar dante bates with the ball now morneau a head ball up towards sonny mazza and canton is well defending ball president lets the ball go out of bounds it's going to be an east long middle throwing for number 13 dante bates now with dante bates no austin cannon yeah he's known to have a cannon especially in the offensive zone of the opponent he's the one always taking the throw-ins because he can just launch it right inside the six and hopefully get a clean head ball on we've seen it already a couple times this year and now voldevinos and and kugnali working up top voldovinos with the ball in the corner chased down by mazza sends a cross inside and it's stolen by krugnali look like stevens or somebody let the ball just kind of go through their legs i thought it was going to go to giroux there and yeah and it stole i got inside stolen by crude now and could have been a very uh early goal for yeah can that could have been disastrous for each song metal especially after a lot of offensive pressure by isla meadow you don't want to let that up they have a little bit of momentum now back and forth ping pong match at midfield ryan morneau ends up with the ball trying to send a through ball up to colin evans it's deflected out of bounds by zach dowling of canton east long metal throwing for dante bates and he's going to softly throw it tomorrow no more no back to bait space is going to get a shot on that and rugeri comes up with another save and he'll roll it out wide he's somehow just trying to lay it on right now some good offensive pressure from east long meadow and canton trading punches going back and forth head ball from mccabe ends up on prezl's foot fresno through ball looking for brunel cutting behind the defense dante bates goes up for a head ball and it's cleared out again by keller and another clear out from dowling dante bates ends up with the ball switches fields looking for brunel it's headed out by keller keller up to mccabe and jacob pachetta switches fields looking for joe president but stolen by eagles and and another through ball up to keller is well defended by east salmonella colin evans attempts a head ball and dowling's able to prevent him and now here goes voldevino on the close sideline is defended well by morneau but voldovino gets past morneau and stevens forcing enzo mazza to step up on defense and maz is able to force voldovino to the ground and kicks the ball out of bounds mccabe one-on-one with morneau in the corner a pullback move to himself trying to split the defenders and does a cross and giroud comes up with a save hey nice snag there by drew keeps that out of danger's way mccabe and mccabe looking for kubnalli in the middle and ben giroux will be taking the punt a very very long punt from giroux ends up right on keller's head and now shea playing out wide stolen by paschetto pachetta through ball to sonny mazza mazza a two-touch pass mourinho morneau through ball to colin evans and rougari's there and rougary plows right into evans and evans is a little slow to get up but he seems to be okay brugari rolls the ball out wide to keller keller looking to play it up to krug nollie and ball was stolen by pachetta and pushed off sent it in and ru gary comes up with a nice easy save there and now more now a light pass inside to colin evans evan switches fields to the far sideline to jacob pachetta working his way up field tries to make a cross in the middle and it's blocked down by baird baird with the ball again sends a through ball looking for valdevino's stolen by stephen stevens tries to clear it ends up right on mccabe's foot mccabe with some running room a rollover move a scissors move trying to get past machetto and grignali plays it back and mccabe [Music] playing it back again to keller keller out wide to baird baird plays it back to his defender dowling dowling back to baird baird looking for his options plays it towards the sideline eagles joe president colin evans defending eagles and eagles is able to get past both of them and create some space tries to get a pass towards the middle and more nodes able to stop it and then a nice back check play from krugnale he's able to lock down more nose pass looking for joe president on the sideline krugnali chasing down the ball and giroux is just going to clear it out more no now and mckinney able to defend that ball at midfield we have a sub coming in now for east longmeadow luke mazzle will replace joe presnell jacob pochetta with the throne on the far sideline just around midfield 22 and a half minutes remaining in the first half of this final four soccer matchup shay trying to clear out and brunel chases down keller on the far sideline ball goes out of bounds off of brunell bulldogs with a throwing dante bates trying to defend mccabe mccabe comes after bates bates able to win the battle brunel clears it back towards more morenomo no touch pass to biggins biggins looking for evans and a clear out and volvo venus has got some running room and an option at far post and a great defensive play from patrick stevens forcing the ball out of bounds bulldogs will have a corner kick some good hustle there by stevens to get back and make that defensive play krugnale was on the far post and if voldavinos was able to get a cross off possible scoring opportunity there for the bulldogs to defend off this corner kick too and a pass straight up to eagles and headed out by colin evans chased down now by shea shale played out wide to dowling dowling trying to play it up to krugnalli and giroud scoops it up and a flub punt ends up right on mccabe's foot mccabe a nice touch to get around mazzan evans kergnally stevens goes over the back of krugnalli they're to say it's an east-long meadow free kick enzo mazzle will be taking it mazza a long send up and it's headed out by dowling [Music] and eagles krugnalli coming back a through ball from dante bates up to ryan brunell and now mazza with the ball just outside the 18 and as a cutback move trying to get past three defenders able to get past one but kent with the other two more note chasing down the ball defended by mccabe and mccabe's going to switch fields towards biggins and voldovinos on the near sideline ball goes out of bounds voldevinos with a quick throw-in for baird baird plays it to mccabe mccabe looking for krugnale up top and defended by enzo mazza and cleared out towards midfield dowling sent back up and giroux was able to scoop that ball up no issues there drew a sky-high punt way over midfield and evans gets a beautiful head on it luke mazza chasing it down in the corner defended by dowling and mazza goes down but he's all right he's getting up if you're just joining us we just passed the 20 minute mark it's still a zero to zero game between east lon meadow and canton and also if you're just joining us mike monroe number one for east longmeadow left with an injury about 10 minutes into this game he was removed from the field on a stretcher hopefully he's okay ball played back from out tour to rougieri brugari just clears it to the far sideline it goes out of bounds throwing for dante bates bates a long throwing all the way up to sonny mazza inside the 18 mazza trying to touch it around looks to be dowling and dowling defends it well and kicks the ball out of bounds now dante bates with his signature throw in the offensive zone he slings it all the way inside the six a head ball by ryan morneau is defended well once again by dowling and forces and out of bounds off of east long meadow great play by dowling and rugeri plays that wide to dowling again off of the goal kick dowling sideline and that ball is out of bounds voldevino had a lot of running room the ref saw the ball go out of bounds so east long metal throwing for dante bates bates throws it inside to ryan morneau morneau let's go over his head luke mazza contested by eagles and eagles clears it all the way up to krugnalli krugnali head ball out wide dante bates able to get it to patrick stevens stevens nice pass inside evans a beautiful through ball to ryan brunell brunel tries to get a shot on net and it's blocked by cannon defender ben biggins with the ball now trying to play up the sideline to luke mazza and a little too much mustard on that pass ball goes out of bounds can't in bulldog throw in for carson eagles eagles a light throwing back to dowling dowling clears it to midfield ryan mourinho with the head ball evans to sonny mazza mazza a light touch back to biggins bacon's a through ball up to colin evans a good look there from biggins but a little too much on it evans wasn't able to catch up to it and ruggieri another easy save for him out of bounds off of mckinney and an east longmeadow throwing for jacob pachettel on the far sideline just around midfield shadow throws it all the way inside to iman karana who had the game winner in nine rounds of shootouts in the nausea high school elite eight round and baird playing it up stolen morneau out wide to biggins bacon's looking for his options of through ball mazda's able to come up with it mazza sky high touch pass to himself and defended well by eagles eagles plays it all the way up to krugnalli and well defended by enzo mazza mazzo with some space and he's gonna send looking for evans evan's a touch to mazza mazza can't quite create some space for himself in a beautiful defensive play by zach dowling and ball is cleared out pachetta sends it towards the top of the 18 and dowling again with a great defensive play here comes shea with the ball now sends it all the way up and drew has to come out of the net and clears it way out of his defensive zone but a bit of a scary play there krugnalli was coming in hot and now cornali will be replaced by mccabe for canton bulldogs drew oftentimes a very aggressive playing goaltender likes to come out of the net a lot clear the ball definitely good to have him on the team especially to the defense ryan morneau with the ball midfield back pass to enzo mazza mazda patrick stevens stevens plays out wide to i believe joe presnell stevens his pass was blocked by mccabe colin evans plays out wide again to biggins biggins with plenty of room able to make a pass towards the flag and it's chased down by luke mazza and a push from satout and they're going to call it a goal kick to tout a little bit handsy on that play on luke mazza but no call there rougari a quick place and a kick out wide to keller keller tries to clear up stolen by east long meadow evans to joe president skating on top of the 18 gets a light slow roller on net and gary easily scoops that one up and a sky-high punt for him one touch by morneau out wide all the way to luke mazza luke mazza cup move inside and eagles able to play it up to mccabe mccabe chasing it down and the ball goes out of bounds east long metal throwing and mccabe just thinks that you know he can just do whatever he wants and picks up the ball without even looking at the referee's signal and just decides to throw looking for voldovinos who was wide open can't do that though can't do it though unfortunately for mccabe east long metal throwing now for ben biggins we do have a sub coming in for islam as well ryan brunell replacing luke mazza and i've noticed chad that a lot of canton style play especially when it comes to throw-ins goal kicks something's like that very very very quick it's a quick place down it's a quick grab and they get that ball into play immediately don't let the defense have time to adjust they're uh just trying to catch you still metal off guard so far i mean they've been doing that kind of play style like in play as well they've been sending it up from pretty deep in their defensive zone trying to get it to mccabe or one of those other guys and i mean it hasn't worked out for them yet for in terms of goals but they have gotten a few opportunities from that and keller it's in towards midfield mccabe with the ball now touch pass around kirana and it's stolen by mourinho patrick stevens clears it sonny mazza in a foot race with satout and out forcing off mazda maz is able to win the battle has possession of ball crosses it and out of bounds off of canton it's gonna be an east long meadow corner kick dowling on the defensive play there able to block the cross some great hustle there by mazza to get to the outside and get past his defender yeah satout was all over him once again sit out certainly a physical player for can all of their defensemen are so far morneau with a low cross looking for kirana ball spits back out to morneau mourinho looking far post for ryan brunell and that pass is just a little too close to the goal line it goes out of bounds rougary a quick place in a kick out wide to keller keller just under 11 minutes remaining in the second half her first half i mean sorry and mccabe chasing down stevens little wrap up around stevens up top nothing there ref certainly letting these two teams play definitely don't want to dictate the outcome of this final four matchup it's a tout playing it it's number three i do not have number three's name chad o'brien will be back with the roster shortly until then mourinho a through ball looking for president who's racing up and forces mckinney to kick the ball out of bounds it's getting a little bit breezy up here now in the booth hopefully y'all are nice and toasty warm at home watching this game dante bates a long throw in inside the six and rugerry comes out of the net and scoops up the ball and a low punt from rugeri and voldovino goes right over the top of dante bates and there's gonna be a whistle there and voldevino love to see that sportsmanship there from volvino dapping up dante bates and now mazza sending it inside the 18 and a head ball i think from mazzer evans and rougary comes up with a save there and ball is forced out of bounds by pachetto and now some subs look to be coming in for canton it's me jacob krugnali i believe not sure who he replaced voldovino a pullback move around dante bates bates goes down voldevino a slide tackle trying to find krugnalli and cleared out bates chased down by mckinney cleared out from pachetto joe presnell chasing down mckinney voldovino with the ball in the corner enzo mazza defending him and voldevino goes flying into the field hockey net he seems to be all right [Applause] and benjaroo with the goal kick drew falls down after the goal kick and here comes dylan baird baird plays it back to keller and now sit out a nice cut move to get past sonny mazza looks to play out wide and stolen by luke mazzle luke has a touch pass back to dante bates bait's a give and go back to mazza and sit out steps up on colin evans forces the ball out of bounds east long metal throwing for number 13 dante bates seven minutes remaining in the first half of this soccer game still 0-0 bates a line drive throwing headed out by citadel and moreno trying to find brunel but goes off of his toe krugnalli plays out wide to voldovino volvino racing up the sideline chased down by dante bates and mazza forcing volvino into the corner and it goes out of bounds they're gonna say off of mazza wow i don't know about that one what's up to us up here looks to be off of voldevino but the ref saw otherwise a corner kick now for canton jake mccabe taking the kick mccabe goes short side post and it's cleared out easily by east long meadow luke mazza chasing down charlie mckinney mckinney plays it back up towards the flag to mccabe and mccabe body checks matt excuse me pacino down wow and another corner kick for kane that is surprising that they won't give him that call charlie mckinney with the ball now crosses it towards the top of the 18 and cleared out by ryan brunell towards the sideline and jay keller will have a throw in that midfield still zeros and an east long metal throwing it's an east it should be an east long metal throwing bowl the vino now plays it back to mccabe and he's slide tackled on the play dante bates with the slide tackle and now baird out wide to eagles eagles a through ball up to volvino giroud comes out of the net and easily scoops up chad i don't know if you caught it on that play but that far referee with the flag was pointing in east longmeadow throwing and the field ref just let it happen you know can quickly picked up the ball threw it in play and the ref did nothing about it it should have been an east longmeadow throwing and that referee did nothing so definitely some miscommunication something happened there not sure exactly what i don't know if you can overrule it as a field ref or not yeah not really sure but the the referee the sideline ref was pointing in the direction of an east long metal throwing they've tried that a couple times this game already but it didn't work the first two and finally that one worked out for them so a bit of a sneaky play there from ken and they get away with it baird plays it back to dowling dowling all the way back to goaltender rugeri rougary out wide to keller and for the remaining five minutes of the first half will be kept on the field with the referee so i no longer can give you time updates that can only give you an estimate from what i feel there's gonna be probably just about just under four minutes remaining and a cup move by zach dowling beautifully done by him to get past brunel now moliani back to keller headed out and baird collides with evans mourinho chasing down baird and dowling a through ball up to mccain mccabe's got some room a cup move inside a shot and mccabe scores jake mccabe with the goal for the canned bulldogs with just about three minutes remaining in the first half jake mccabe canton up one nothing [Music] looking to respond quickly then not a lot ben giroux can do there defense kind of just let mccabe dribble through everybody able to get an untouched shot on net buries it right past giroux moreno sends it up towards the flag to luke mazza mazda chases down the ball and keeps it in bounds one on one with mckinney passes it back to karana karana chasing it down and they're going to say it's a free kick for canton a little bit of extra contact there for me long metal under two minutes remaining in the first half ball sent up by dowling headed out by stevens mourinho goes out wide towards the sideline to brunel but brunel can't keep the ball in and throw in now for canton throwing there was number 19.

since children under 18 have essentially a zero percent fatality rate a mandatory vaccine is unnecessary i think this board should pass the resolution i would also encourage all districts in butte county including the county superintendent of schools to unite behind a similar resolution i believe that if one large district like this passes something like this others will do it although doing so will have no immediate impact at the state level it will encourage other districts to follow your lead the only way to prevent the vaccine from becoming law is if districts declare how this will affect students and staff thank you thank you hey our next speaker is justin larios justin vladios thank you guys justin laurios father of four um i wanted to thank you for leading the charge last meeting and thank the board for its unanimous vote um a friend of mine who thinks vastly different than i do shared a video with me of her children getting vaccinated and my first thought was that is beautiful that she had the choice to be able to do that i want that same choice i'm not saying i'll never get them vaccinated but we just don't have the data it's a great thing to be able to choose you know as we see the the mandates falling flat at a federal level let's not give that over to the state let's let's make a decision here and like other people have said i think we should include the same wording that durham has had in their letter you know when when when you administrators and teachers got into this business i'm sure it was because of the kids and you weren't signing up to be a enforcement arm of the government so let's not let that happen now we see you guys in the community out and about eating at restaurants and shopping but yet during the day you guys are enforcing these crazy rules let's not do that here today let's have the courage to stand up for freedom and stand up for what's right and parents and teachers choice to choose so i encourage you guys to stay the course that we set in motion last meeting thank you thank you next speaker okay our next speaker is phaedra moral phaedra moral in person good evening i'm sure you remember me phaedra larocca moral farmer business owner loraca vineyards parent and a concerned woman i encourage you to continue forward with the draft that is being presented however i'm up here to encourage you further you guys are elected school board to stay strong with our commitment to no covert 19 mandates for our children and staff the draft that i read which i believe is the draft that's on the third paragraph from the bottom it says that the request to quote allow for clear exemptions and then it continues unquote which included personal religious and or medical exemptions we're not needing exemptions if we do not allow a mandate i would like chica unified school justice board to see that that we're all here and we need to tell the state of california that we're a strong district that refuses to accept gavin newsom's mandate period please consider changing that paragraph to state our school district will not accept nor support any coven 19 mandate for our children staff or volunteers for in-person class or in-person learning excuse me so again if we don't have a mandate we don't need exemptions thank you next speaker mr tennis i have a question for phaedra yes ask clarification you're not okay with a process that enables any parent here to sign a form saying we choose not to do this if that's the only outlet then i guess of course we're okay with it it's an option we have a choice but my fear is is that if we allow a mandate with the exceptions then the government's going to come in and not allow for exceptions like which they have already clearly have done so to [Applause] so to stand strong and just say our district is not going to allow the mandate then we've already set precedent that they can't further take our rights away thank you okay madam president we have one more speaker it's a phone call says jessica no last name jessica she was listed twice on our form and she'd prefer to speak during items from the floor thank you okay mr tennis we're to the point where we can get to the point where we can begin full discussion so public comment is over uh yes i believe so we've had our 10.

i i think i i mean i i think it's a a good idea to keep that kind of i like the idea of the council members being half of the mayor's salary but i'm also wondering if maybe we're aiming a little low based on the amount of work that the council members are doing i think we had a similar discussion at our last meeting and i can't remember exactly the the answer to this so chris you could help out uh when we had that conversation was there some discrepancy in the way that um other city councils are set up as far as they were said as being um employees or had a set pay where ann arbor was uh maybe not it might am i remembering that correct or do i have maybe i'm just misremembering that uh you know there was a difference between them the mayor's right somewhere like full-time era somewhere part-time um but i can't remember about the city council members there's that uh there's the whether the mayor is full of part-time is one aspect also whether it's the mayor is the chief executive or not so in ann arbor the mayor is not the chief exec executive uh that's by the city administrator so that when you look at those salaries for various cities and the mayors you know in the hundred and thirties that's probably a chief executive mayor um the council members i don't know um if there's any real difference i think they all kind of serve the same function um but they're the way that the salaries are set in various communities may be completely different some may not allow any compensation some you know may have a local officer's compensation commission some may have a fixed compensation you know you see a few of them that are like five dollars or whatever so um but i don't i don't think there was any i don't think the duties are necessarily any different i would have to check whether or not they are specifically called out as part-time or full-time um i suspect that a city like detroit might have a full-time role whether it's stated or not in the charter or anything i suspect a job in detroit would take most of your time yeah thanks i again i i may have just kind of mixed up those two between the mayor and the city council two year two years uh between meetings is a long time thank you and i can we can always look in if you need more information if you want to look into lansing and you know what what their council members are do and how it's structured we can do that as well well i i'm a bit more of an incrementalist um i do appreciate the sentiment raised and i do appreciate the work that our mayor and city council undertake i guess my inclination is given the current inflationary um dynamic um rather than using this kind of the blended uh cpi and non-union wage increase uh for the two years um i guess my gut reaction would be to use the uh july 20 to july 2021 cpi and non-union wage increase so the 5.4 in the 3 which would then give it a 4.2 percent increase so it would it would acknowledge that i think inflation is going to be here for at least a bit um rather than it would you know greatly reduce the uh percentage increase in the upcoming two years if we did the blended for the for these two years so i guess my my suggestion would be to go with the uh except the the formula we've used in the past but just the the most recent year for cpi and non-union wage increase yeah um i don't have a problem with that obviously if you look at the numbers there's pretty dramatic change between uh the 1920 versus the 2021 um obviously the result of the pandemic um we certainly have experienced that inflation now and you say it does not look like it's going to be slowing down uh soon so i don't have a problem if we want to just use the uh uh blended number which you say would come out to 4.2 so here are my thoughts on that i think that as long as our recommendation makes sense uh it will receive the attention it deserves from the city council members who are after all the ones being paid and if they decide that we're over the top they will do as has been done in the past which is to reject it so we can certainly go for the higher number uh the questions that i have and i'm kind of of two minds about this are uh the last two years have been odd years and as the cost of living has gone up so has the cost of conducting government um at least i assume so and i am concerned about causing too much of an increase in city expenses under the circumstances although you know it's some people think of it as a drop in the bucket on the other hand and and before i get to the other hand i have never heard from any city council member or the mayor that they wanted a raise they will accept it or not but none of these folks are in it for the money we are very blessed with people who do not look at this as a source of necessary income on the other hand one of our goals is to encourage people who might find it challenging not to be compensated adequately for the work that they do to choose to run so those are my back and forth thoughts to the extent that it actually does more than theoretically perhaps serve as an incentive for people to include themselves in the running instead of excluding themselves because it is you know it's a position without benefits and um sometimes those extra couple of thousand bucks make a difference between being able to get by and not get by because right now it's still true that the people who tend to run are people who are well healed enough so that they don't need the money um so those are my thoughts i've straddled the middle quite nicely i think um well and to add them highly to the confusion um although i certainly just made the argument that we should just look at the last year another thought is that with a raise of 4.2 we may be sending a message in uh future union negotiations um that this is an acceptable um wage increase and you know that's something else i think we at least should keep in mind that although this is a small amount of money if this were applied throughout to all city employees that would be quite a different amount of money i have another another question that i think is going to inform maybe my opinion on it i actually i agree with changing that cpi uh time frame from the july to july to match that fiscal year that that we're talking about but on the um just overall general picture of our recommendations from last time in that draft how how does how do those numbers um affect or get put into the budget for the city for like four out years in other words they see our are kind of our draft for fiscal 20 uh was it 2022 and 2023 um from our last resolution do those get then kind of added into that budget or what they're planning for for those out years yes so the budget is is developed you know pretty much well it's developed all the time but um in earnest it begins kind of at the beginning of the calendar year so the budget for fy 2023 will start next january and these this determination will be in at that point so they'll be able to factor it in okay so in that respect kind of like back to what roger was saying about maybe changing those uh too much or outside of any i think he was talking in the context of just using the cpi framework what we have now is um and the half of the mayor's salary but i think if you go anywhere any too far beyond that even to elizabeth's point of trying to kind of get up to other city council salaries that might be too big of a jump um just from at least if i'm like looking at a budget saying what do we have to work with you're talking about um what do we say four percent increase or thereabouts on the cpi and if you look at the october numbers for cpi that was already at six six point two or something on a year-over-year basis so you know i'm not to say that's what it will be in two years when we meet again but um those are pretty substantial increases on a percentage basis and if inflation happens to go the other way during the course of those two years i don't think that we're necessarily locked into having to reduce these numbers kind of to your point elizabeth that way you might get a little bit of catch up um you know but not take the step back um i think that we were using this more as like a framework not necessary that had been set in stone when we when we talked two years ago and then that way we could make adjustments if we saw fit so i think i'm i'm with um the camp that says kind of use this revised cpi dates from july 19 to july i'm sorry july 2020 to july 2021 to match fiscal years but to keep that formula that we had and i think the unions have i mean back to what roger was saying the unions have their own negotiations and and what they're looking at and i think they're probably looking more at what comparable city employees working full-time are getting paid and the benefits that that accrue to them in those negotiations rather than the city council members maybe more so it's the mayor but i would i would think less to the city council i would agree with that i do think that in a certain sense uh what we do is a little bit of a vacuum because there aren't any real comparables and union you know union jobs have benefits that this job does not um it did occur to me one other fact that i remember from two years ago that was striking is that when we solicited information from the city council members and the mayor as to how much what their estimated hours were the interesting part was i i actually believe that most of them underestimated the hours that they put in um but the range when you discarded the one that was over 200 hours a month and the one that was under 60 a month and again these are just estimates that people tossed out everybody fell within 60 to 180 hours a month and when you average that that's 120 hours which probably is accurate at least for the people who underestimate it um and when you think about 120 hours per month most months aren't actually four weeks but if you describe full-time work as 40 hours per week that's 160 hours in a month and you have people with an average of 120 hours that they're putting in every month on a part-time job this is not a half-time job this is a modern job so you know it's one of the reasons i feel pretty committed to seeing to it that people's commitments are honored even if again they might choose to decide you know not this year we can always address it in two years i want to say also that in the years that i was not on this commission but through the 2000s i think that there were because of you know economic situation there were several times when the council denied itself increases probably three times out of four if that's possible so um we were kind of playing catch up by the time we got to 2017.

and the other one being 1835 4.36 a which talks about kindergarten 2012 so even though some of these are restricted by grades these these statutes cover the entire school and i start to look into some of this and one of 18 a 35 4.36 a um talks about gender and sexual orientation as part of the curriculum and so these this is kind of a pattern that i'm noticing where the policy comes out there's a statute that's fairly vague and says department of education will follow up with guidance in terms of what this means in this case the guidance did come out in june and i think the board should consider the age-appropriateness of some of this guidance i'll make this available it's on the drd website you can look at it but for instance the way that they work this through in their standards that our curriculum will be considered they look at this these standards and it goes across a couple of different areas for the comprehensive health and physical education personal growth and development pregnancy and parenting emotional health social and sexual and they break it down by ages so here's what we expect you to have taught by the end of the second grade by the end of the fifth grade and by the end of the 12th grade so these are guidelines that the curriculum committee and our director are looking into as they look to put these policies in place so for instance a couple things i might think we might have some pause on by the end of the second grade students should be able to list medically accurate names for their body parts including their genitals by the end of the second grade they should be able to discuss the ways that people express their gender and look this is a sensitive topic for adults to discuss and now we're saying that by second grade we're going to be asking them to consider this in their curriculum i have a problem with that i think that's way too advanced topic for somebody in second grade talking about gender expression going on to the fifth grade i thought that we basically did reproduction in health in the middle school seems like an appropriate time but finance the fifth grade under this guidance they should be able to explain common human sexual development and the role of hormones by example romantic and sexual feelings masturbation mood swings and the timing of the onset of puberty they should be able to explain the relationship between sexual intercourse and human reproduction they should be able to talk about the differentiations between sexual orientation and gender identity and it goes on from there i think that there's a really important question here about whether these are topics that should be taught in school no doubt that we need to be able to enable our children to be able to say something inappropriate happens i want to be able to have them be able to report that and have a vocabulary but there's a role for the parents here for sure previously when we taught reproductive health it was understood that that's a conversation that parents might want to have with the children themselves parents were sent a notification that these topics were coming up in health class they were given the option to be able to opt out of those classes putting this in a comprehensive health and physical education white it's not clear that this is taught only at the sixth grade level it seems very likely that this is going to be woven into all parts that we're living i don't know how a parent that wants to be able to have these sensitive discussions with their children themselves can do that and have their kids in the school those are the concerns that i have there's a lot being crammed in here and i think that it takes that we should really consider this before we vote on it that's why that's great to be separated from the rest of the topic and i will be voting though on this thank you thank you for your opinions i appreciate your research into the topic um i feel that you saying that parents have to be notified you don't know that and you've never done that in the past any time the great health girls are wrong i've had two fifth graders and one right now we always get a notice at home here's the curriculum this is what's going to be taught boys are separated from girls and this is what's taught you have a right to say that i think if that ever changes yes parents need to be notified but it's not changed yet and it doesn't mandate in this policy that it will be changed um to be woven into um your english class first day and i think we have the ability to say that when they not be the curriculum writers of our school will have the ability to say where it's going to go in and if the policy committee and then the curriculum committee still want to keep it just at one class we can do that even though it says comprehensive right as long as you're comprehensive in what they are covering so um so parents will will and can be notified when these topics are discussed there's even in the middle school when they're talking about a certain book a note gets sent home different than that parents have the right to say no i don't want my child reading that book or these are these books in the classroom and they you want your child to have full reign and there's these topics you can say no i don't so we do give that and those notices do go home and i don't want that to change either can i make a comment as well the the specific reason i asked that question it was specifically because i wanted to make sure that this was older kids in middle school my concern is that and it's this has nothing to do with modality or for the policy itself but i also don't want there to be this trojan horsing of teaching something outside of you know if we put it under a different category we call it a part of hell outside of what we're normally under a health and sexuality course that my son did that so i know we get a permission slip for that we cannot get out of it but my concern is that if they start doing this to us where they're mandating policies that we have to include these other things and other topics that they're not gonna it's they're they're gonna try to make it so that parents are if it's part of the curriculum and can't opt out of math you cannot opt out of english i don't want to see that control taken away from this board because that's our role is to represent the the parents and and their control over what their children are being taught and and i you know i think myself and my our constituents the people that that voted us here i think would agree with that they still want to maintain control over these things and they don't want to be told um certain things that should be taught in school and certain things should be taught by parents or at least they should have the option of saying whether or not they want to be taught or not so you just looked into and then now this is only this one particular policy though this two point two point twenty four twenty 24-22 yes and again it's just her first reading and karen um i'll just add okay we're going to give a the group thing comes out and parents are given the davis point sorry talking about reproduction from that this week it's gonna happen is it fine that's good i also have a problem though with us putting this policy into place without knowing what our curriculum take on this from this guidance is so far it's like asking somebody it's like asking somebody a politician what's your what's your position on this and then saying i'll tell you after i'm elected right that's what you're saying vote this policy in trust back without knowing any type of feedback that they may have on the guidance that exists i don't think that's the case i think that that's why we have so many and that's why we have a review that they work on it and then we review it that's not just i disagree with you on that that's not the case on how the process works that's why we have this board in our different committees and the experts which is not me which is not you to work on the curriculum to write it and to meet the standards and that it's great appropriate standards for the students in this building we have to we have to trust the experts on that and that's without it without it now that and it's a shame because it's so it's so intrinsically misunderstood that we're not just educating these kids in math and science or meaning that's not what happens here and i wish it was from a second grade standpoint which i have i definitely want my kids to know what the topical means of every part is now that's just the difference in opinion but it goes to say that and i am having these discussions i have two and two two girls from boys and i definitely want the school to help me in these discussions now again it's simply a difference of opinion but in so far as the committee and how the court works uh that is happening there's no doubt that it's happening it's just a shame that we we're just not able to educate these kids when it comes to math reading and science so so much of this is part of a being of education and uh like i said i respect your opinion on the second grade i totally disagree with it and uh that that's where that's that's where it lies that's where it ends everybody on this board has the right to vote yes or no and i hope to god everybody on this board within their respective committee is doing your due diligence that is a matter of trust it's never going to change and some of these topics are so sensitive you say penis to a second grader which i have it does not go as easy as one plus one doesn't work i i think i just want to make sure there's transparency though i i i want to know that this is happening i don't want to just be told you know i'm approving a policy that i don't know what's in it that's that's my point and you know that's why you know we are transparent and when we get these policies we discuss them um we post them so that um everyone has the chance to read them and then we discuss them and so again and there's two readings and there's two reasons but that's the reason why we have the first reading if there's any changes then we have the second you know we have the second reading now again this policy it's not that we're approving a curriculum curriculum because we haven't seen the community yet yet you know the the state will give us a mandate ahead of time and then they give us time to work on it so uh we've been given this mandate and so we have until you know from now until on next september to work on this policy to work on these on this curriculum and um and that includes having the meetings having the curriculum meeting with the committee so that this can be discussed um and you know it has happened before i mean i remember and you know ted probably remember this you know and dennis where uh there were questions about certain books that were in a certain teacher's classroom and so parents were uh you know expressing concern about that so as a as a committee we sat down we looked at the books we read and discussed it and um and we made changes and then what came out of that was that whenever a student was going to be exposed to that material a letter was sent home in advance on letting the informing the parents and the parents have the the option to opt their kid out of the classroom that day and this is the same because it says in the policy that parents have the right that um and they will be notified this is all new this is new to all of us um this is new to you know the administration here that prior to this these six statutes it was just life on the life education class during health and the letter would go out um the letter still goes out letting us know if you would like to opt out of that you know your child out of that class so the same thing will happen with this now how the administration decides to do it because now we're talking about um embedding some of this material into different um coursework subjects so um so that they'll they'll figure figure out how they're willing to address them but again it's we're not approving a curriculum we're proving that the that the state has mandated this and that we will abide by what the state is saying and that um because we are a public school that we will have these subjects taught in the school if that makes sense so chris um in theory the consequence and when you lose points you will stay there okay so um the point that sean brought up is just my opinion because these people are expressing their opinions about passing this policy but not knowing what the curriculum you know the the people that mandated this policy it really becomes an opinion right so so in my opinion this subject matter is appropriate for a second place i feel that um for the first reading that we have to dive more into it and we should and that again it's not exactly it's mandating us that we need to put it somewhere in our curriculum what that is and what those standards are we don't know yet and that's what all that always is when it comes to curriculum even if you you know you compare it to that you know match working with the policies and state like what the standards are in your math curriculum we just prove the math curriculum that we're going to have a massive curriculum you know we don't go through and say oh well you have to teach the quadratic formula this way this way we don't do that as board members like we just follow the policies and say the state is mandating that this is going to be in our curriculum the experts now are going to deal with how that happens um that's that's how i feel the policy is read and that's how we move forward you have to trust the professionals the teachers who have been teaching for many years working on this that they know the best place to implement the standards that they're asking us to do and we've done that forever and and we're not going to work alone here in rio we belong to the model county consortium and so uh professionals from all around the county administrators and teachers alike will be working and discussing this as we move forward and unpack you know what is expected of us the policy we have to approve how we implement and how we set up our curriculum is something that you know takes months and months of work and it's not in isolation we will be working with other districts only in practice that's true and when you were talking about showing where you broke down on by grade two you'll be you should learn this by great that's done with boss such as every single subject on those the standards are broken down that way um so that when you're teaching on you know karen can speak to this you know when you're teaching you have to look at that standard by this you know by this age the child should know this by this you know time of the year they should know this and they break it down so that's every subject does that and so the work is going to take place and like i said it's a process and it's a lot of work but you're talking about you know we're fortunate to have this love but the years of experience that she has and her team it's going to take time for them to find what is appropriate to when you're talking about consent oh my goodness i mean these words are scary when you think about your young children um but i have faith in this team that they're going to come up with some resources that are not just age appropriate but also developmentally appropriate you know for our kids and the thing is that we'll be able to review it this board will be able to review that curriculum before that curriculum is taught and that's what we'll have the opportunity to be able to say oh you know maybe we can change this or and we can make some suggestions um so that's a great question about old mandate the state legislature passed they'll pass the law and said schools in new jersey will now do these things yes okay and that's the law correct yes okay so do we have any rules i'm not saying i'm not experiencing what sean said this is the thing i understand but what i'm saying is do we really have any room to maneuver here can we not adopt this policy so where we have room when it's a mandated policy we have to adopt that policy the the flexibility comes in during curriculum work when that team sits down and base that's where you have the flexibility to say you know what for average school our kids i don't think this is appropriate there might be another district that says you know what we can handle this we're going to do it this way and that's where in new jersey every district has that flexibility what would this specific policy um it should be done now so that um this alertness is ready first right so that it's ready so that it's ready for september i mean if you want to i mean we can always we can always table this um we can have a discussion we can talk about it again and then then we had the uh room tonight and then second december but if it's by the end of the school year we then we would still have you know eight board meetings to deal with right they also might have to work on the curriculum and they have to they have to start working on this and and chris your team starts january working on it so that gives them a nice amount of time from january to but they should have so is the final is the law that is referenced does it state that you just have to have a curriculum in place for next school year yes if you you have to have we have to have this in place for next week but it doesn't specify understanding and recognizing that there is some significant concern about on the board about the board members but this is the first reading so what she can do is that and again i understand what valiant said we don't have a hell of a lot alone [Music] so my suggestion is if board members wish to vote no or are saying or in some matter not vote yes on 24 22 that's that but you pass the first reading tonight we have the second meeting we have the ability to make any adjustments we want to meanwhile we'll have a better light on understanding what we can and can't do in terms of the actual mandate itself and also the involvement of many we can take more time if the state's mandating something that we don't feel whether it's a few people or a majority of us or minorities if the state's mandating something that we don't feel is appropriate that we don't want in our school district how else are we going to lodge our feeling and our representation of our parents that we don't agree with it other than voting now and and dealing with that as it comes i don't i don't if if they're telling us that we have no control over over this anyway then why are we voting on it i don't think that's i'm not representing the state far from you know i'm asking you to shoot more experiences again there's a legitimate question what i think is taking place here is uh we've all seen particularly those folks involved in the industry itself teachers in this ministry the state loves to pass mandates and states and usually they're managed to cost money in which they gotta give us never get school boards they just give them the responsibility to do business we saw that particularly with school security and school safety um so the state says do they have all these things you do value that you do that and then they leave us okay we can't say no we're not going to do that because the state has the authority to mandate those types of curricular changes and not to put your final point on when we swear when we are sworn in as important numbers here we raise our hands and we say that we'll support the developments established in new jersey the state has a legitimate authority to do what it takes here and has been doing quite for quite some time that doesn't mean that we shouldn't have this board members shouldn't have involved parents educators everybody's a stakeholder and everybody has a piece of it but we cannot i don't believe without some consequence and some unfortunate consequence we cannot define the state we can't say we're not going to do this yeah so you know what i'm thinking right now is because we have so much more to go through tonight um i will um i will reach out to strauss esme and speak to their attorneys there and um and also reach out to our board attorney and um and have her take a look at this and um and then we'll discuss it and then i'll discuss it during the committee um and then we can then i'll bring the information back to everyone else i think shout out to sherry adams clarification and she can get she's important so she can get back there we could do a first reading and then you know and this is when a first and second reading is [Music] [Applause] [Music] why not wait for the legal opinion and uh from the police writers why of course the first reading through i mean i don't think we're forcing it i mean if if you don't if the board wants to wait what what what's the implication tonight on this tonight what's the implication of that it's not forever you know we'll have a better understanding well we'll have a better understanding of it but it's like dennis said and i'll check that with the attorney um if there's a mandated policy and and we all vote no there might be some consequences but i'm trying to figure out whether or not we should vote or not because if it's i'll tell you right now i'm voting now because this doesn't sit well and i i think i see no other way to lodge that i don't this doesn't sit well with me other than voting no one having that be on the record if that's going to be yeah that's it the vote that we would be taking tonight would determine the course and any consequences [Music] i just i want you to know that i'm going to vote no because if you think that's going to if that's going to cause some kind of problem where cabling is going to make it easier for us to to figure it out and move forward but i don't know my suspicion is my no vote's not going to carry anyway so i don't think it makes a difference um but i i i need to register that i don't this doesn't sit right that's perfect that's what you want well then let's let's vote on it well we can do that if you want my question sure oh [Music] tonight i mean we can do everything and should do everything in our power to continue that kind of control of that kind of input these are our kids not the government's kids or the state legislatures we should be involved parents should be involved teachers should be involved but we are important but we can't define state any more than we can define the standard of bringing these coverage to that my final thing that i'll say is i think it's a bit of a false effort let's see to compare this to a math curriculum all right this is lifestyle choices this is the state-taking position on something that's super controversial a number of things that are super conscious are sealed and the other that he took was to support the constitution and supporting your constitution means that the doctrine groceries saying when you think the parts go wrong it was the law in the new jersey first that created schools in the 1800s and that was a role that's all i'm going to say i think we should have it thank you [Music] um [Music] all right so so the next one um i thank you everyone for for the discussion i i think that this is why we're here you know and and i i don't believe that um we're here to say yes yes yes you know and i i appreciate the concerns that bringing up your opinions and things like that because um that's how we are able to dig into some of this work and get it done because so right now it's not adoption we're only saying this is what's on the table from the state how do we go about it so i thank you for your bravery and everybody's paying their opinions because it's it's a very sensitive and thought-provoking time it is thank you for the presidency and and in the end it's you know the most important thing are the kids and what's being taught with children so keeping our kids um in mind when we do any of any of this that's just and so the other one is 2467 surrogate parents and resource family parents the revisions mainly focused on terminology updates including the replacement of foster parent with resource family parent now during we were discussing this because the policy when you read the policy it sounds like they're saying that the district is responsible for finding a surrogate parent for a child and so and we kind of all agreed on that that it did sound the language sounded like that so i contacted um strauss esme to clarify that because before even presenting this reading we wanted to make sure that the district wasn't responsible um for finding a surrogate parent so um when i read it i understood it and the thing is being in education you kind of read this stuff all the time and you understand how it works um i understood it as being um and chris was saying the same thing that when we're faced with a situation where a child needs a surrogate parent we you know we put things in place so we'll have either we'll refer to the social worker or the guidance counselor and then they are responsible for contacting social services and then that gets the ball rolling right it's not us finding a parent or interviewing a surrogate parent but anyway i agree the the policy sounded like the district was responsible so i contacted on the the attorneys at strauss esme and they clarified for me that our responsibility is to contact social services or the appropriate agencies who are properly trained to assign a surrogate parent so this policy is not putting it on us it's putting it on um the social services they're responsible for and um let me just quickly check if there's any other one that we need to um or if anyone has any questions i think the other ones are self-explanatory if anyone has any questions about any of those policies um just um just let me know and then discuss it there is okay just just bear with me there's another policy that yeah there's a lot but there was one that from the last time there was a flash okay here it is right here so last uh meeting we talked about on policy 57-51 sexual harassment of students and and this this policy on the language um the language was a little difficult because uh it was a lot of legal language here and um and i'll always research it and look it up but i still had a lot of questions about this one and um so it was the recommendation of strauss estimate for us to contact board attorney and to sit down with board attorney because there's an option here that we have to select and so um their recommendation was uh to contact board attorney and to review policy 5751 so that we can understand um thoroughly on this policy and what our responsibilities and this policy has changed for a long time was that meeting did you have you no i i spoke a stress destiny today no no um i spoke with them and then i sent a message to sherry um i haven't heard back from her but we'll schedule something and should that's like an appropriate information we can do that yeah we're gonna take that off free yeah we'll do that when we do the motion reaction and we'll make eight three twenty four twenty two we'll do that when we make the motion okay yes yeah d3 your work is extraordinary and well appreciated um mr becker community relations uh no there wasn't a formal meeting that i uh suspect in light of these new policies and to get the full birth of opinion from the committee members both sean and david we will have one in december we want to make sure this flies right by the community and everybody is with everything from parents to the professionals thank you kurt and on a later note december 5th real quick christmas tree lighting is happening again and our chorus will be there tonight i'd like to welcome uh newly elected board members sarah mcdevitt and julianna wright they're both here [Applause] as volunteers um in education uh we have nothing but the greatest respect for people who want to serve on this board and do the kind of work that our board does um month after month and for many years over 20 years so we're going to welcome you on our rework in january so thanks for being here this is a short meeting tonight that's why i excuse the kids like uh it was nice tonight to have the boys soccer team and you heard me talk about the other sports team um i meant that we had a great fall season our kids are amazing in field hockey i want to recognize two board members their two daughters in field hockey uh olive becker and uh andy declinger qualified for the all-star team for field hockey and you know there's two divisions national american and we were we were brand new to field hockey you know our girls never held a stick and like i said had an undefeated season the final game the championship he lost by one with minutes left to go but those two made it into the you know the championship the world cup and uh the game ended one nothing our nationals lost the other team won but they played against teams that have been playing field hockey at the middle school level for a very long time so we're just really very proud of our sports and i said it at last meeting um the full season he had over 80 children staying after school involved in schools whether it's cross-country soccer field hockey now for basketball uh and the play coming up again and cheerleading we have you know 15 cheerleaders you know 16 uh boys and girls basketball players every team uh december 5th we're going to have our tryouts for annie so we're going to be a nice busy place you know and i think karen said it i think the coach said it it's just so nice to have normalcy back you know the kids love it we love it and it just makes school so much fun it was a challenge for us last year and you know the kid involvement is so great uh as karen said before even having uh kiernan uh at the sound here tonight uh working the technology uh kiernan runs our tv studio he's captain of the um safety patrol he's an outstanding student and he's spending his friends went home to do homework he'll be doing that when he goes home so thank you kiernan for uh being behind the scenes but always being a great leader we had a great halloween parade many parents came out they thanked us over and over again for having a parade getting the kids outside it was a wonderful day in school and in the parade and so again for the normalcy uh you may have seen the sign uh mr erickson i wanted to talk to the port about this has been an employee of this district for now 45 years so sarah and juliana since you went here he was here when you were just little girls here in the school so 45 years of service uh he doesn't know what friday uh where because the shirts are on the copic train or something we're doing happy rain day shirts for everyone i got board member stuff so we're going to continue celebrating his birthday old week he's just done so much for our school in those 45 years i tell everybody he started at age six but he was actually only 20 when he started here part time 45 years ago but he loves this place and i'm going to make a recommendation we did it for one teacher 45 years i think he deserves a bench and he doesn't know it and he's hopefully not watching us tonight and i'd like to get a bench with his name on it to honor somebody i don't think this board my guess that you're going to have an employee here for 45 years for a long time coming even teachers don't stay in the profession 45 years but those who do i'm at 44 years those who do it's just it's just the world is changing um and ray has done some amazing things uh as the head custodian and people coming to this building and are always commenting look at look how clean the building is look how healthy this building is look how he has such pride in this school and and it shows and so i think we should recognize him with it with a bench it's my recommendation um the courtyard um a second courtyard we raise money in december i want to bring bvf in because we raise money we have two courtyards in this building one is smaller than the other and we raised thousands of dollars and backpacking our table should be arriving here by friday so we have two locations outdoors for kids to learn and have lunch and have activities so we're excited about that the rotary club is coming here friday they're donating dictionaries to all third and fourth graders so they'll come here friday to do that we got a special grant we've got keyboards for our music program and so kids are learning how to use the keyboards in our music program our student government is doing a food drive we hope to have about 12 baskets to feed the needy in our community our community is doing a wonderful job sending food in for that that's run by our student government next thursday wednesday before thanksgiving we do dismiss the kids at 12 40 twelve fifty it's uh uh in preparation for uh thanksgiving karen mentioned the tree lighting on december fifth our band and course members will be there instead of pancake breakfast uh sugar is a bakery in town and they're going to do special um gingermen so that kids can make and uh we're glad that we're doing something for our kids we did last year we're going to do it again and like i said beginning tryouts are december 7th and that play is scheduled for the middle of march so we're a nice busy place we're doing great things teachers are doing an amazing job parent-teacher conferences went very well we offered parents virtual or in person and people did what they felt comfortable doing some came in some did virtual but our teachers were booked uh we haven't experienced that in a long time so almost all their slots were filled so we're just like moving in the right direction welcome the two of you and that's my short report thank you chris does anybody have any questions on tonight's agenda we are hiring uh miss schneider uh uh on the maternity league and so we're hiring um to see her name none of us could say this eighth syllable she said to me we call it foreign but she's a great addition to our school when he's going to give us control back situation the rumblings will now i have a round table again this friday but the superintendent says we might hear something in january i read an article in uh i don't remember which april that said that they were gonna he was if nothing changed he was going to allow i guess it expires in january yeah and then you would just like go back january hopefully okay okay let's get to action items kurt can you make a motion on curriculum for me please definitely thanks aaron i'd like to pull forth the motion to move action items a1 through a3 on tonight's agenda i have a second sure are there any questions yes mr valencia yes mr vitale yes mr paul yes thank you past um ted finance um [Music] yes mr wolf yes okay there's nothing under buildings and grounds this evening on the policy so um medalli we are just to clarify for diane for d1 we are taking off policy and regulation 57-51 okay under g2 we are taking off policy 2422 and d3 will now read the motion that the board of education approves the following policy on the first reading of policy 22 i'm sorry 24 22.

uh third one down uh recommendation to appoint vinnie pinuccio as our replacement for frank barber as a computer slash art teacher ba step 15 at 87 940 and you know that i had spoken to the board last week about using uh both local funds and sr and rp are arp funds to offset um mr pannuccio sally he'll be getting with us he'll begin with us on or about january 18th uh once he gives his current district 60 day notice so we're happy to have him on board uh further down the page we have two bus drivers uh who are moving from part-time positions to full-time positions i know mister alfano uh did speak to the transportation committee about the need for that we'll go over to page four uh you know that we have as a result of sr2 funds and as a result of arp funding we have something called learning loss money that we use this past summer for part of our salt program and we're continuing to use that money throughout the school year so what i did is i advertised for staff members who are willing to come in before school hours and for the most part some after school hours but for the most part these teachers that are listed uh from schools three four five six in the middle school will be available for uh homework help for students who are in need a few mornings a week and we're going to use our learning loss uh monies to fund that particular program so that should help students in their transition coming back to school as they have this year some of them might be in need of homework help or remediation and we will have staff available to assist pages four and five and six um are staff members who waive their um benefits medical benefits uh and in lieu of getting a cash waiver or a cash incentive or a non-cash waiver depending upon the situation you know that that saves the board of education uh and the community quite a bit of money in terms of not having to pay the full benefits for those filters so that's uh through pages four five six and on to page seven and we do that each year uh page eight um as i mentioned i believe it was last week uh we are going to revise our school calendar so that we're going to have elementary parent conferences as we have in the past for three days december 7th 8th and 9th pre-k through 5.
