President Melinda Sraki. Fred Rushton here. Charlene Dia is here. Barb Zarziki here. Sheila Bernett present. Would you guys please stand and say the pledge with me? Get out of the way. I pledge algiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Citizens present, please. I hope you have signed in in the back of the room. It's just nice to know who's here and who's helping us out a little bit. Um, did I skip a page? Nope, I did. I skipped a number. Item 2.5 called to the public. We have the recording. Okay. This is the time that the public may speak to the governing board regarding issues within the jurisdiction of the governing board and subject to reasonable time, space, and manner restrictions as the governing board may establish.
>> All right. Is there a second? >> Second. >> All in favor? >> I moving on to the elementary handbook 2627. Mr. Thompson. >> Yeah. Reviewed that. There were just a couple of little housekeeping items. I added the 765 as a prefix for the one number that I noticed there that wasn't there and little justifying on the lines. But other than that, everything looked fine. >> Right. You make a motion? >> I would make a motion to approve it. >> All right. There second. >> Second. >> All in favor? >> I. >> All right. The Wilson preschool handbook. Mrs. Brown. >> I have reviewed the changes in the Wilson preschool handbook and other than one typo did not have any issues with anything in there. So I move approval of the Wilson preschool student handbook. >> Is there a second? >> Second. >> All in favor?
I mean, what it was I I told Coach Ziegler it was so fun to watch. I mean, it really was. Took me back a little bit. So, Um so, uh moving down on the agenda, next we'll ask if anyone is present who'd like to speak to any item on the agenda or any other topic.
We won't actually know unless we try it. But there was an example recently for um 10 to 60 Main Street where very informally a group was pulled together um uh to serve as kind of an not not a third-party review officially, but an informal group to try to give feedback to 10 to 60 Maine. And in that case, apparently it went very well that the applicant was very receptive to that input input and those three people were able to kind of just serve just for that amount of time and then not be obligated again like for for years, you know, to to do it. So, kind of working from that model, we were looking at um uh the bylaw and um Jasmine and Lisa me town council found that with very few changes in our current bylaw, we're just changing the makeup of how the committee is made up, you know, and then we can start to um you know, to to fill those slots as we as we have um applications come for our board.
>> Um anybody have any questions about these? very low. Um, all those in favor, please say I. >> I. >> Anyone opposed? >> We're stating. Okay. Um, to curriculum now. >> Yes. The curriculum committee met and we was we reviewed two new course proposals. The first is ECE music in our world is presented by Mr. as a dual enrollment opportunity in partnership with Eastern Connecticut State University. This course would allow students to earn college credit with a modest cost of approximately $550 for required textbooks and would be offered based on student interest. The second proposal is bake shop 2 is presented by Mr. Jones to address address strong student demand for advanced baking instruction. Current enrollment in bake shop courses is high and the course would provide an opportunity for students to further develop their skills would be offered based on enrollment with no significant additional costs anticipated.
We also had color guard excellence where color guard was able to place very high at their champions tournament. They also placed very high in girls basketball program where they conquered CIF. There was also a leading and learning visit where students from the district were able to come understand about Savannah and the parent ambassador pinning program. Very exciting for the parent ambassadors. That's it. Thank you. Oh, wait. Sorry. That's it for the um for the student report. But in other news, I want to say um a little special note because I want to thank AHSC for this position it's given me. This is not my last meeting, but it will be very soon. And I want to take this moment to be very grateful for the teachers who brought me here and for all the admin and the professionals who helped me get this far. But I'm committing to um Cal Berkeley, UC Berkeley, and I'm very excited to say that.
C policy BH. Comments will be limited to three minutes per individual unless specifically waved by the governing board. At the conclusion of the call to the public, individual members of the governing board may respond to criticism made by those who have addressed the board, may ask staff to review a matter or may ask that a matter be placed on a future agenda. However, the governing board cannot take action on matters that have not been noticed in advance as part of the agenda. Okay, we have two people who would like to speak to us tonight. Uh Kimberly Johnson, would you like to come up? Hi, good evening. Hi. I am coming to the board today to speak about a certain bus driver um for the Desert Valley route. It's bus J. His name is Ted. Um I have had multiple issues with my child on this bus.
>> I. >> All right. Thanks to the three of you for reviewing those policies and handbooks so we could get those approved for tonight. Moving on to personnel. All right. Good evening. Here we go. Uh, retirement first. Gary Bacon. So, Gary came to us as a math teacher. Um, then moved into a technology coordinator position. When you guys named me head football coach, Gary Bacon was a somebody who had called about possibly they were trying to move here and he was looking for a teaching coaching job. So, like the first person I hired on my coaching staff was Gary Bacon and he came from Northwite where they had won a couple state championships and if I had done a better job listening to him early on, we would have had an even better career. So, no, here you go. Um, appreciate where Gary's at. Gary gave us um some great years and he was really trying to make sure that this was the right decision.
Hearing none, we'll go to old business. Um under programs, we have teacher appreciation grant. Yes, I just wanted to update that we'll be distributing um the TAG grant on May 15th payroll. We notified the 34 teachers who will be receiving the grant. We followed an application and rubric process. Wonderful submissions um from our very high-quality staff. Um we had enough funds from IDOE though to cover less than 13% of our teachers using the state's new criteria. We miss the way it used to be, um but we were happy to be able to take advantage of some of those funds in choosing to do so. So, just an update on that. Again, that item is an inform. Um next we'll move move down to new business under programs, JCSE elementary handbook. Yes, um you're going to get all three handbooks tonight. Um and the first one is the elementary handbook.
I think even I thought Lisa even said I I don't want to get this wrong, but I I think she thought our design review committee structure was very unusual for for a town. >> She did say that, >> you know, because I think it is and I'm not sure why, but it it has been a heavy burden for people to be on that committee. Maybe maybe it didn't start out that way, but I think in recent years it has become a lot, you know. So, um, so anyway, this, so this is this bylaw that we're going to be having a public hearing on on the 30th.
We're asking for the approval of the board to move forward with these adding these courses to the BHS program of studies for the 2026 2027 school year. >> Excellent. Thank you very much. And on to community meeting reports. Is there anyone who has any meetings to report on? I see here. >> I saw Diana D. So she gave me some a BPA update. >> Thank you. >> All right. Um so the PTA has recently funded um a student and parent online safety presentations. Those were given to the students. There was one also for parents um in the evenings. They just had an author visit from my curado. Uh they had helped fund some field trips um for first, second, and third grade. They paid for the spelling bee shirts and pizza parties. Um they paid for some March Madness books and Nutmeg awardwinning books. And uh they funded some robotics programming.
>> Okay. Thank you. Now I'm done. >> Thank you so much, Leah. And congratulations. Very proud of you. I now uh would like to recognize a few people in the room. Um he was just here for the recognitions. Uh but Mr. Anish Patel from the city of La Palma mayor. Uh we have Jeff Morgens, ASA president in the room. Thank you for being here. Uh Lacy Munger, APJ co-president. Thank you for being here. Uh Joe Carmona present uh uh representing Alta this evening. Thank you for being here. And we have uh Trustee Alva Alvarez from the Anaheim Elementary School District. Thank you for being here. We will now move forward with our student speaker portion of the meeting. Students wishing to address the board of trustees should complete a speaker request form available on the information table at the back of the room and submitted to executive assistant prior to the meeting.
Um where it is now to a point where it is looking like bullying. Um this last incense that I've had with him towards my daughter was she was sitting towards the back of the bus and he said something from the driver's seat. She did not hear him. And when he turned around and said something, she looked at him and said, "I did not hear you." And he got up and according to the other children and my daughter stood over her and told her to shut up. Now, my my older son stepped in and said, "Get out of my sister's face." And now he's looking at a write up as well, which I told him, "You did the you did the appropriate thing to stick up for your sister." and and he's not in trouble with me either way. Um my concern is is this is not the first time I've had a problem with this driver with my daughter.
Rhonda retired recently. Um Gary's offered to help us out in any way we need, but um so grateful for what Gary Bacon has done and recommend the board approve his retirement. >> All right. >> Is there a motion? >> I move approval. >> Second. >> All in favor? >> I All right. >> Yes. Um nothing here that really stands out. I would just recommend the board approve resignations A through G. >> So move. >> Second. >> All in favor? >> I. >> All right. You have a few people you're hiring, too. >> Yeah. And Susan caught this, but we've never really uh put interns on. So, we are paying our interns and we've really established a pretty neat program. Um we worked with Wabbash College and um it started with Takashi Grinder. So Wabbash still has an education department but they don't give a certification.
Um all of them are um updated and aligned to new law or policy and any new legislative updates. Um you I've shared an electronic copy with you. You'll see highlights of anything that's added and red strike through of anything that we've taken out. If you want um a printed copy, let me know and I can get that to you, too. So, that's for elementary and this is an inform. Okay. I would just add real quick that we did include the verbal false informing that we added that mid-year, so that's added in for next year formally. And then the cell phone policy will have to shift and change to match the new state laws um that go into effect over the summer. So, both of those things are reflected in handbook drafts. So, that's elementary and that was an inform. And then is there anything additional you want to just mention the other two?
Um, so, um, so just wanting to know if there's any questions or any, um, suggestions with it. So, basically um, the meat of it is in obviously 9.6.2. So design review is conducted by a committee made up of three members. So it's kind of taking out out the alternative members things like that made up of three members appointed by the planning board where possible members shall have experience in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture or engineering and up to one person owning a business in the town. That that was obviously carried over from before and we decided to there's no harm in leaving that in, you know. Um but it also also members members shall be appointed um uh per application review. So in legally that means we've gotten an application for a YMCA or for a a housing project what whatever it might be and they would be assigned for that application not for all the projects open at that time.
And I believe robotics also received some grant funding recently. Um and then for upcoming events, um we have Superintendent Fuso's board of ed budget presentation at their PTA meeting on April 21st. Um they have the spring gala at Urban Lodge on May 2nd and there is tickets on sale online. Um they have the spring art show, also a BOGO book fair and that is May 12th. Um they have the yard goats game May 30th. Family night of STEM Magic. Um that's new. That's going to be June 9th. And then they have the Marley fundraiser on June 1st, which is always very popular. Um they're also doing their staff appreciation week. They're having Flower Girl catering one day. Um they're taking donations for travel and tons coffee truck another day. And um they're doing room service another day. Thank you. >> All right. Yeah. A lot.
Students wishing to speak at this time are limited to three minutes. Board members cannot immediately respond to student comments as stated on the speaker request form. And I'm going to call up our first speaker is going to be Isaiah Espinosa. >> And this Yeah. >> Good evening. My name is uh Isaiah Espinosa. I'm from uh Kennedy High School Army JRTC and I'll be speaking on behalf of them. Before I joined Jared to see, I wasn't really the kind of person to speak up for myself or put myself out there. Instead, I mostly stayed to myself and didn't have a lot of confidence. But joining Jared to see honestly changed a lot for me over time. It helped me come out of my shell. It helped me to work with other people as a team. And it also gave me the confidence to talk to more people and confidence in myself that pushed me to do things I never thought I could do.
The first time I had a problem with this driver and my daughter was when my daughter was in kindergarten and he squirted her in the face with a water bottle because she fell asleep. So I addressed it with him then about that incident and he said he doesn't like touching the children when they're sleeping. So he just assumed squirt him in the face with water. Now mind you, I had two other children on that bus that got off at the same bus stop at the same time that he could have addressed to get my daughter to wake up to get off the bus. Just like this instance, he did not have to scream from the front of the bus and expect children to hear him from the front of the bus all the way to the back of the bus. Um my children are a work in progress.
So the young men at Wabbash who are interested in being teachers um don't get all the student teaching and those sort of things. So with Takashi Griner, if you remember, we brought him in, his senior schedule worked out, and he had like Tuesdays and Thursdays off, a great second semester senior schedule. And so we brought him in so he could work in the science department and then be get to the point where he could teach some lessons. Um, so we have a few going right now at Wbash. And Jonathan Young, who is a Crawford'sville High School grad, um, is helping us in the math department. Um we actually have two in the math department um right now. So that's interesting in a world where a couple years ago we couldn't find a single math teacher and now we have all sorts of potential here. Um so there's that.
