So, there are about five students enrolled in the day classes for next year uh with with a teacher assigned. >> Can you say that again? >> Five students enrolled in the day classes. Those are the J Oc specific classes, not the drill, which is the PE class, okay? But the JRTC specific. And so, and as you know, we have PE teachers who also have the PE credentials. So, when we're making difficult decisions with decline enrollment, that is something that we're challenged with. I did meet with them to discuss if it is in fact closed. Um, what are some options that we might have so they can still participate and engage with the activities connected to GRC? So we brainstormed a few opportunities uh with not just the clubs and some of the commitments of going to some of the other school program field trips that Magnolia Catella and or Anaheim have but also talking a little bit about um some other possible opportunities that we'll have to explore with both Poppy Hill Benales and the principles at the other schools that have those programs along with Amanda Bean and Amy to talk a little bit more about like either concurrent enrollment opportunities or opportunities for like a zero period with one of the teachers to come by and then go back to the other school since they will have two instructors.

>> Okay. So you're not worried about the PFAS then? >> Well, you know I the question ultimately is you h we're understanding that statement to apply to the actual turf grass the fiber, >> right? Does that statement also apply to the fill? That's what's not clear. Is is the hybrid fill also PAS-free? >> Right. So the the yarn the fiber is is is the fill >> because even though it contains chrome rubber crumb rubber can mean a variety of materials some which are less offensive than others. >> Yeah. I saw on the list on the front page of that the information on the different fills I assume the smart turf is number four turf carpet right but there's also one >> two three and five so I think the bulk of the questions is related to five what is that infill generally the subbase and the the drainage that's stone and stand and things that are organic Um the shock pad also can come into play um for leeching more than because the kids don't touch the shock pad but um >> for leeching.

So, we're going to explore some possibilities um and ways that the students can still participate, but it will have to look a little different. But just want you to be aware of that. And they were wonderful when I met with them on Tuesday. Um couple other quick things. Um as you heard from several of the folks uh in the I think the association reports, next on the 21st of April is our fifth and final leading and learning visit connected to the community school work that you just heard through I don't know a handful of dozen about a dozen public comments in addition to the presentation. So, we have about 140 150 sorry, it's grew since I last knew. 150 uh guests coming to participate and to learn um not just from the work that we're doing, but for also our folks to learn with others in terms of how we continue to grow um in the community school approach.

So is that also PAS free that material? >> So the infill is that I mean the order seems a bit strange. The infill is where is that's on top of the turf carpet. >> Yeah. Everything else goes in and then you like sweep the infill into it. >> Oh so okay. So the infill with the with the blend of 30 to 50% rubber um is the infill on top of the turf carpet. >> Correct. >> Okay. >> Right. So that's the part we're trying to understand. Right. We have this great turf carpet that has no PAS in it, but then we're sprinkling something else on top of it and that has question mark, right? >> And and that's the stuff that gets tracked home. >> And that's the stuff that gets tracked home because it's loose, right? So that's that's the that's the certainly that information has to be out there.

I'm excited about that. And just to give a shout out, South Junior High and Catala High School will be our two host schools uh for our district. And I I'm not sure Anheime Elementary is not participating in this one. So, it's just South and Catella. And then as you all know because you participated the AI summit was a great success. I just want to give a shout out to the amazing staff um who participated and led workshops. Also our amazing students who did soapbox speeches, participated in panels. Um Abby was on the stage on on a panel in front of the you know several hundred 700 folks. Uh just really really proud of the great work we did and as you know um the district received an AI K12 student advocacy award that was celebrated on Thursday night or Friday night. Friday night. So just really great success and excited for the work that we're we're doing.

>> What we'll take what I'll do is I'll make sure that uh I contact them and find out specifically about their infill and if it has the PFAS. Is there anything outside of that that you're of interest? >> Well, I think while you're doing that also the shock pad would be good to know. >> The the I'm sorry, what is it? the the shock pad under the turf under the fiber >> y >> like the whole system um >> does that statement apply to the entire system? >> Okay. Yep. >> Are are you definitely going with Smart Turf or is this just an example of who you're going to go with? >> Like I mentioned, there are so many different manufacturers of this product. when we talk about a hybrid product, um they certainly are uh a company that we're looking at very uh diligently, but to say that we've made a decision on who the vendor will be, we haven't.

And then lastly, as you heard, we are in capstone season. So hopefully you'll have an opportunity to go visit some of our schools as our eighth graders and our seniors really celebrate their learning journey and the work and experience they got while they've been with us in terms of the projects, the the development of the skills, also the content mastery, just the experience they've had to to grow as as young as young people uh ready to navigate life outside of school. So I'm excited for that. And again, hopefully you'll have an opportunity to participate with with a few of our captains across the district. Thanks. That concludes my report. >> Thank you. Uh, Miss Quinn, >> thank you. I'd like to start off by recognizing some of our outstanding staff members. Um, as you already heard, it is National Assistant Principal Week this week and also the day of um, school principal day is May 1st.

But they're it's going to be at this level at the uh hybrid level. >> Thank you. >> Okay. So, I think that um I think that uh Jasmine, if you can um just keep track of the the kind of questions that we have about the not the questions, more the the discussion that we've had about the lights, about the the sign that there doesn't seem to be anything else here that we're that anyone's that we're concerned about. It's just this one thing that we're trying to trying to learn about. out and I think then we should reach out to Concom sustainability say um uh board of health and just see if they have data on this. If if if other parts of our community in Ashland have been doing have information on this or have been doing research on this or have a statement to make about this then we would want we would want to know the same as we would want to know in a building you know we want to know what um what sustainability has to say about it you know so using our own you know our own resources that we have so um but uh but that said like like I want to re reiterate that no one I don't think anyone is We're not trying to throw out the project.

So, um, before our next board meeting, those are things that we're we're going to uplift. And also this month is National Library Month. And so I want to acknowledge all of our library staff including our library media techs and our district librarian who you heard from tonight, Justa Vera, who um was part of the AI uh presentation. Um I'd like to also recognize some of our schools that are being recognized by the state. So Lexington and Oxford have been named California distinguished schools this year. You heard earlier from Lacy Monger that Magnolia was recognized as a California exemplary dual enrollment program. Um and also South and Cyprus which were recognized as green ribbon honores in the gold category. So these recognitions reflect the incredible work happening across our campuses and our commitment to excellence and innovation. So in addition to capstone season, we're also in testing season.

We're really trying to understand the implications so that we can make a a sound decision, right? >> Can I ask sort of like a very econ economical question? Like what's the how burdensome would it be to not use this kind of turf at all? And is it is it the cost of maintaining without the turf that's the issue? Like from the applicant's perspective, what are the alternatives to using this stuff at all? And how expensive would that be? Is it cumbersome to the project? >> Are you I'm trying to figure out the question. Are you talking about instead of using a synthetic turf? >> I guess what are the alternatives and why are there are they economically viable? >> Would they somehow jeopardize the project? So, the the options for fields um today, regardless of where you're at, um in what township or what state, you're either looking at natural turf field like grass that grows, utilizes water and fertilization, um or you're using a synthetic turf.

Um so right now um our schools across the district are in state testing not just for CASP in math, English and science but also in physical fitness. So thank you to all of our school sites for facilitating the work and um creating positive environments and supportive testing environments um for our students. So we wish them the best as they take those tests. Um, but next month we'll also be doing our advanced placement testing. And I'm so proud to share that we have um more than 1,000 more students taking AP tests this year than we're taking last year for a total of about 40 uh 4600 students and over 7,400 tests total being signed up for for next year. Um, and so many of our students are probably wrapping up and uh ramping up and preparing for for those exams and want to reflect the increase in access and student ambition as well as the dedication of our teachers and staff in supporting academic excellence.

Those are the all those are your options. And I guess I'm asking the first option, the non-turf option, the organic material with fertilizer, is that would that essentially would that make this project not viable? >> I don't know that it would not make the project viable, but it certainly >> uh would impact um what what the intent of the the field would be. Sure. Um, you know, one of the things you run into and then one of the reasons why your middle school and your high school decided to go with a synthetic turf field, I'm certain of is durability. uh you can go ahead and grow that grass and fertilize it and then spring season turn comes about and uh the kids want to get out there and and play on the field and it's a lot of moisture in in the soil and they run on it and they rip it up within within a day and then it has to grow grass again.

>> Yeah, that's where where Angel has a lot of some experience with this in in schools, you know, as she >> Yeah. Yeah. No, I'm just trying to I know it's it might seem like a stupid question, but I'm you know, it sounds like it would be it would not destroy the project, but it would make certain things more difficult. >> I think it's also the the question as we compare like the the the fertilizer and the um the the water and >> the amount of water in the summertime becomes a lot to keep like a real a grass field with grass growing on it, >> right? the the maintenance, the the the mowing and the you know um so the yeah and not just the labor of the mowing but your you know the um fossil fuel powered lawnmowers to you know there's there's all these different kind of factors and that's why why the um declaration statements like you know that it it does some of that homework for you and kind of compare the pluses and the minuses.

this is what it does, you know, so that you at least you can make an informed decision like, yep, we we just we we chose the lesser of two evils and and and we're we're satisfied with that. We're we're content with that, right? So, um but we're just asking to provide that kind of information to educate us in that way. So, is that uh is that clear? I think that's I think that's I mean I appreciate the information that was sent this time and I think we're looking to take it just a a little deeper than inquiring minds want to know right we want to know more about this so we'll we'll get information from the town's end and we would be looking for again a deeper level of information about um about the the three layers of the product I guess um we kind of seems like it seems like the the actual carpet part is more more out there, more wellknown and the other parts are a little bit harder to to get the information on.

I cannot drive a bus. So, um I am very grateful to them that how they are every day. They're so positive and they just love the kids that we have. So, um and then lastly is the school lunch hero day. These are our um the staff that um every single day prepare breakfast and lunch for our students. And so just want to thank them um for providing um the amazing meals that they can because a lot of times the students may not have food um when they come to school and this is the only meals that they have. So thank you so much for all your hard work um um to take care of our kids that way. And then finally, congratulations Leah. Welcome to Cal. So, as alumni, I'm so thrilled you're going to go there and uh just remember all the advice I've given you.

Well, we have our homework assignment. >> All right. Thank you. All right. Um, so with that said, Madam Chair, we're looking at a continuence. Do you folks have a date in mind? >> Um, our next meeting is on April 30th. We're skipping over school break week because a couple of us won't be here and probably a lot of other people won't be here as well. Um, so our next date is the 30th. Um, we have a few things to do that day, but I think we can definitely be where we can have a spot for you to to check in and not not delay anything if that if that's suitable for you.
