so we see you know that as the enrollment declined so did our faculty i know sometimes there's the allegation that that never happens which isn't accurate where we saw a dramatic decline as well as in media support staff from 12.7 to 6.0 probably more a reflection of our budgeting um at the at the time and a couple other you know items i'd like to point out and this is this report is available in your packet and online and you can as a member of the public go to edsite ct.gov which has incredible detail and data on every school system in connecticut one of the things that i saw and really appreciated in terms of an improvement was that in 1617 we had 71 percent of our 11th graders taking college and career readiness courses during high school 71 in the 1920 report it was 98 so our students are accessing a lot of college and career ready coursework uh the jump in 12th grade went from 92 to 97.8 so our i always thought as high school principal it was really important that whether or not a student was going to college that they had exposure to at least one college level course uh upon graduation and this tells us that we're getting there um in an appropriate number as well another note as we embark on budget season our local percentage of the budget has risen from 81 percent 82 percent to 84 percent and as a balance to that our pilot money at the local level has increased so it's probably close to an offset there but when you see that number it may jump out to you but you know of course there's more to the story there the persistence rate is something that i think is really important for us students who enter college as freshmen what percentage of them continue on to a sophomore year and there can be a myriad of reasons why students don't continue on or persist however it's something that we think is really important um we were at uh roughly 94 we're at 95.6 as it moved up a little bit one percent could certainly be um reflective of different variables but um it's still incredibly high that persistence rate and that's something that we're we're really proud of our four-year cohort graduation rate is exceptionally high at 97.6 percent uh basically if you enter cheshire high school as a freshman you're gonna graduate four years later as a senior um and most of those those students who aren't are receiving extended services perhaps transitioning into our quinnipiac program most of the rest of the report is really you know absent given the fact that our standardized assessments were compromised by covid we were impossible actually so um i just wanted to kind of walk through that report and certainly if anybody has any questions they can reach out and the last item that i wanted to talk really quickly about was the fact that this is the 100th anniversary of american education week and in my message to the staff i shared with them that you know particularly over the last two years the role that public education has played specific to the cheshire community has been critical in permitting our students to attend school every day to have those social and educational connections continuing in their life we have been the metaphorical shelter in the storm and as such we thought that an umbrella would be a nice gift for our staff as well as cheshire public school masks the umbrella if you haven't noticed yet has a neat little quirk it comes with an app that if you plug in a particular percentage of precipitation chance it will geo-locate you and when the precipitation chance exceeds that number that you plugged in you'll get an alert on your phone that says cheshire public schools has you covered don't forget your umbrella so it's kind of cool a little quirk and you know certainly you guys is critical members of our public education team we thought you deserved an umbrella too so thank you and happy american education week thank you dr sol any questions on his report tim thank you tony yeah i was just jotting down some notes um uh a story i heard on npr hopkinton mass in the past probably about three weeks ago they had hit a 98 vaccine rate which is quite different from us as you were just talking about the numbers but they made mandato they uh eliminated the mandatory masking rule you know what i'm talking about no okay okay so ann knows what i'm talking about this is not made up at all no so but so so they did that um but what i'm wondering about is have you begun to think about metrics guardrails for unmasking at this point and i know we're under a state basically executive order right now and it's not going to happen that goes until the end of february but i'm just wondering you know are you are you thinking that through on the potential of unmasking and what would be the the key determinants for you the criteria you would use in doing that sure so we started thinking about that in july august when it was uncertain as to whether or not the state would require masks as you mentioned is it is state law we do require masks we follow that but at that time i had sent the state department of ed a proposal to review around a combination of variables including vaccination rate within the building staff and student the positivity rate in the community uh hospital hospitalization rates things like that specific to our community and pinpointed to the greatest extent possible at a building level and it's you know a moot point at the moment but um it is something that we're conscious of uh i'll i keep coming back to what we all believe is most critically important is getting every student in school all day every day and what steps support that so um vaccination and and i'm not you know an epidemiologist or you know any sort of public health expert or medical doctor but the i rely heavily on people who are to advise us about what steps support that stated goal and beyond being here all day every day then it's as close to typical participation as possible which would include not having a mask on so the advisement is that access to vaccination is a step that will get us toward that so we continue to employ those strategies we continue to employ mitigation efforts like distancing to the greatest extent possible at lunches and the cleaning protocols that we use long-winded answer for yes we are always trying to get there um and taking every step that is advisable to that end sure thank you um yeah and just for the viewing public so the the town that i mentioned hopkinton mass i think it's right outside of boston it was a story on npr probably a week ago is when i had heard it that was pretty much like right around the two-week mark so at the tail end of when you could begin to see the covet cases something like that but i just while we were sitting here i just googled it and i didn't see anything pop up under there and i i'm just guessing that if there was a big story about it a big explosion it probably would be in the news like they made a mistake now again they had a 98 vaccination rate i'm assuming at least the high school i forget if it went through the elementary schools and stuff well probably not through the elementary schools because that would have only happened in the past few weeks the vaccinations yeah um but i just want to i want to keep the kids in school absolutely that is the number one priority but i also want to be mindful of the masking and trying to get beyond that as soon as possible one other point i'll just make that i saw as a parent last summer and a conversation with our pediatrician last summer was you know my son's got a cough he's got a fever she'll bring him in for a covet test yes bring him in for a covert test but to be frank he probably doesn't have it because we've seen an explosion because everybody had been masked up for a year and a half and then when everybody unmasked probably last may or something including kids over the summer time outside there's an explosion of all sorts of other viruses because all those viruses are out there and kids get fevers and stuff like that so i just want to be mindful of that if if at some point hopefully before the end of the year we do end up unmasking there could be a whole slew of things that could get people concerned and rightfully so but not necessarily covid it just could be other viruses that kids get all the time adults get them too and the one other thing that i was wondering about i don't know if you mentioned it like i said i i was looking up something about hopkinton mass um mental health uh any concerns anything that's going on right now within the school system it it's a concern for me not among the entire student body but probably at an increased rate concerns among the students relative to prior years sure we talked to open the meeting really almost opened the meeting with circle of security and attachment issues and what we've seen is not just among youth but adults the transition and i think some frankly some of the social storm impacting people um of all ages and and certainly kids can be more sensitive to that and so yeah i mean we definitely are closely monitoring that and we have seen um an increase i mean certainly over behavior last year but last year was really hard to to gauge because we had much less students in school and we are continuing to work really closely with students and families to support them part of the issue there is that mental health support in the broader communities it was hard to come by pre-pandemic now there's an excessive demand and a real dearth of service which is is creating a problem uh or exacerbating a problem the problem is already there so um we work very closely with youth and social services uh and other providers in the community to try and link up kids particularly who may be in you know greater need than others um and and that's nothing new but it's it's definitely more pressing this year and we're doing other things um you know i mentioned those horses that's a therapeutic intervention we have our pet partners our therapy dogs um you know are working with kids across the district which is helpful we are focused very much on mindfulness and other strategies to support self-awareness in and emotional regulation things that we have really ratcheted up in the face of this transition to support kids tomorrow or excuse me next week we'll have scott driscoll come in who does a lot of internet safety presentations for students and parents that'll be a dodd middle school so you know we're really trying to do wrap around supports for students we had a special had a workshop for parents recently so we're trying to address uh all facets of it but and it is a significant issue not just it's not a cheshire issue by any stretch it's a an american issue right now probably a global issue yeah no i i understand that's my thinking too so thank you yeah yeah thank you any other ones have questions another former school counselor can't not chime in on this i just wanted to add that i think the importance that all of you have contributed to sel being a focus area means that we have really looked at ways to embed those supports into regular teacher instruction and one example of that is today we had a speaker come to our administrative team and talk about ways of promoting that even in a math class and how you couldn't teach frustr de-escalation and first how to handle frustration if you know how to deal with frustration with a math problem you're more able to then apply that to other situations in your life so i think the importance of us embedding those sel strategies within instruction is is really important i just wanted to add that thank you thank you marlene as soon as there are other no other questions uh we have no old business new business uh so for announcement meetings uh dr sona i had a chance to attend the cave caps conference it was already a week ago last friday yeah uh which was nice because it didn't happen last year due to covid and even though there was uh not full attendance it was pretty well attended so it was nice to win in person it was sold out based on the the cap on the on the numbers which is a good thing who would have thought a cab conference actually sell out but that was actually a fun thing we yeah um we actually had uh our education secretary uh mr cordona uh uh streaming live from washington that was pretty exciting uh he obviously holds connecticut in high regard especially for education and so i selflessly hearing that i'm hoping that this funding in the bill a lot of it comes to connecticut especially for schools maybe electric vehicles tim but uh so it's good to know that we have a strong proponent in washington for our education system here in connecticut which was freshman year uh dr stone i got a chance to do a pre-conference session on leadership and divisive times with patrice mccarthy that was pretty interesting we're not the only board that has seen public uh commentary for last lack of a better word every school board in connecticut is facing some kind of um scrutiny um various topics and i was actually on a cab chair meeting today um and by the way tim the topic of uh when we get back to potentially optional mass in schools depending what happens to covet what are those metrics you know is cabe come up with any recommendations yet and all i heard was uh certainly working with the department of ed and department of health but there's nothing firm yet my guess is it's going to be up to working with superintendents soon so i'm hopeful that we'll have some answers going into late winter i'm hopeful that spring we can relax this but uh but it's good enough we're not going to look at that which is nice um oh one last thing i was an aces governance ball governance yeah ball which was a ball ace's governance call today on the board and uh if i heard mr cook correctly on curriculum they uh aces offers that teacher residency residency program that dr sullin mentioned to us uh a few months ago and that's uh part of crack where we uh they can find a fast track for folks to become educators people of color to help fill that gap in diversity and if i heard mr cook correctly at least for aces the organization they now have more uh candidates enrolled in that and have seats available which is incredible because we can't find enough folks uh to fill those positions across the united states so i know aces is a very small aspect but that was pretty awesome to hear that that program is up and running and so hopefully maybe ending the next year i know dr stone tried to uh find some folks this year but uh it's very positive so but you should know that and that's all i really really have so upcoming meetings the december 9th at 7 30 is the board of ed organizational and board of ed business meeting here in council chambers monday december 13th at 7 pm is the curriculum committee meeting thomaston boardroom tuesday december 14th 14th to 6 30 is policy committee at the hudson boardroom december 16th potential planning committee meeting uh possible as a whole to be determined and i'm not gonna get into that after the new year budget schedule was kind of sad but uh that being said that's the upcoming meetings that's all we have on the agenda night for business um we are going to be adjourning into executive session after this with uh no action to follow so folks are free to leave once we make the motion but before we go there do i have a motion to exert adjourn an executive session catherine one fine i was i was either waiting for a second enter motion but it's yours i moved that we adjourn into executive session oh sorry um to include dr solon to discuss the superintendent's evaluation with no action to follow thank you katherine is there a second 10 seconds all those in favor it is in favor we are joining executive session you all leave thank you for staying on tonight you

on the microphone and to get us started we'll do roll call madam secretary madam president all board members are present thank you very much next please stand and join us in the pledge of allegiance led by mrs states of browning and through the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all thank you the first item we have on our agenda is our young artist awards and for that we turn to dr dudley thank you so this evening it is my pleasure to share with you the recipients of our young artists awards for this next six months and we have the pleasure to really enjoy the young art works of art that our students have done at all 15 of our schools and now we have a small powerpoint that we will share the names of our young artists as well as our teachers our art educators that work very hard to help our students to hone their skills and their talents [Music] [Applause] congratulations to our fabulous young artists thank you dr dudley i know in the past our students have had an opportunity to come in and stand by their picture on the wall what type of opportunities have we extended to our students this time sure if their parents would like to bring them in they can come in and stand next to their picture to get a photo opportunity they can certainly and if they'd like to call to make sure there's not a meeting going on here they certainly can do that great thank you very much and congratulations to our students i know we certainly do love having the artwork on the walls and it it certainly brightens the room and it's it's just shocking at how talented our our students are i mean even i know there's pictures of our kindergartners who have drawn up there and have painted you know all the way to the high school so thank you for bringing that next on our agenda we have mr inscape who's going to be discussing the high school boys 2021 tennis state champions thank you mrs spanenberg and dr fairsford and thank you so much for taking the time to honor a great group of greyhounds this fall the boys tennis team won their state record fifth consecutive state championship this fall it was a very special occasion as it was the first time ever that carmel high schools had the honor of hosting the indiana high school athletic association state finals at our own facility so that was uh definitely a special moment on a special day to set a state record um on our home courts it was also the eighth title in the last 11 seasons for this group and also the 14th overall and i might add that this uh this group of student athletes has the highest grade point average of all of our athletic programs at carmel high school as well so we're very proud of them in all sorts of different ways but certainly getting it done in the classroom and representing us very well in all areas on the tennis courts as well and um emily bauer has done a great thing for us to put together a video um commemorating the seasons so without further ado i will play the video and um the team has meant so much to me i've made some really close friends um i've had a great time being a part of such a great group of guys and i'm going to miss it for sure the impact that the chrome test team has had on me is i've made some of my best friends and hope to keep them for the rest of my life a bunch of hard working guys to really put the work in during the off season to win another state championship cheer was obviously winning state at our home courts it was really special it means a lot to win another state title six in a row is a huge accomplishment a state record so i'm super proud of all the guys it really it took a lot of sacrifice and effort and hard work and we all know dr ostrich's math is much better than mine it was six in a row and not five in a row that's athletic director human resources superintendent that's why and uh thanks to the board for uh to honoring these great greyhounds and we appreciate all that you do to support our students and their extracurricular endeavors thank you thank you mr antscave i do have a couple questions for you um i have how many of our seniors or how many are seniors or will be returning next year and are any of our seniors going to continue playing tennis yeah that's still be to be determined um because it's still in the fall a lot of those um opportunities to play at the collegiate level are still kind of working its way out um but we will have a handful of those varsity starters back for next year which is great it's uh it's been a terrific mix i would point out that rocky lee who played uh three singles for us was a freshman this year and uh just had a phenomenal season so uh we know we've got some great kids moving up and uh those those practices are so competitive for these kids all the time it's uh it's amazing what they do in practice sometimes a lot harder than the matches they have against other opponents well thank you and please pass along our congratulations for not only their their athletic achievements but their academic excellence as well so congratulations to you and your teams thank you thank you miss pandemic i might add that uh first off i'm an english journalism major so uh um carmel tennis is now inventing words like five pete to tie the state record and then six pete to uh to now be the all-time record holder for consecutive state championships but so i got a chance to watch him not in the state finals this year but and i think it was a sectional reading one of those and what an amazing group of kids and their enthusiasm and teamwork is is something special too they really pull for one another out there everybody on the team uh was was with every player all the time the other thing i want to point out was that uh slideshow was actually created by a student i can't remember which one was it hallie good yup and uh a lot of some of the students at the carmel high school that are in like the ctv uh group there are now doing some uh learning some marketing skills and putting together some presentations for us as well so that was a student-created program so just a lot of good things going on all around with that so thank you mr stranski for your report thank you and so when the students are helping to do that emily are they coordinating all of that through you then well please pass along our congratulations to all their fine work as well thank you and next on the agenda we've got the carmel education foundation fall grant winners and for that we'll turn to dr dudley thank you so this evening i'd also like to present our educators that are the caramel education foundation fall grant winners and the carmel education foundation's mission is to support the carmel clay students in academic achievement and lifelong learning this falls grants the great idea carmel education foundation grants were focused on innovative instruction wellness stem and learning recovery this fall they awarded 23 grants they awarded 13 individual grants to educators one collaborative grant and nine teen grants and here are our winners of the fall caramel education grant foundation so and i'd also like to point out last wednesday our grant recipients and their guests were honored at a reception here at esc and i know some of you had the opportunity to attend that to honor our fabulous educators and their winning of these grants so congratulations [Applause] thank you dr dudley and when we go back to having everybody join us um i would like to say i really enjoyed the video and i would like to see us continue with that i i like that that will live on in perpetuity online and so people can see what we've been able to do with the resources that the education foundation is so generously provided to our teachers if i if i may this was a wonderful event i attended and one of the women one of the teachers this was her sixth grant and it was really impressive to see how many people had come back for repeat grants it was really really wonderful would anybody else have any comments i'd like to share mike i mean as always i would just like to thank the carmel education foundation for being a true partner in our community for not only raising funds and then distributing them to teachers so that they could do these amazing projects so thank you to them and they're bored into the community because it is a great asset um to carmel clay schools great comments thanks mike luis i'll piggyback on what jennifer and michael said i have a deep appreciation for our educators who innovate and try new things um so thank you so much for that and uh those that really lean into our children who might be having challenges in an innovative way especially so thank you katie your turn i know i just have to say ditto ditto you all said good things we love our teachers we love it when people give our teachers money so keep going so and we yeah i guess a big thank you to the community because the the ghost and goblin run is one of the major um fundraising efforts that the education foundation does have each and every year and that does turn right back around goes right back into our school system to help support our teachers and our students so thank you to our community dr b your turn well thank you i'm always a man of more words but the i will tell you that i love the whole foundation concept of offering these great idea grants because um number one i'm just thankful for them for doing that because it does it spurs creativity it spurs innovation and uh it gets teachers you know that ability to risk something and try something different and and i like it also that there's individual grants but also there's collaborative and team grants where they get together and collaborate and and generate these ideas and then they're funded to give it a shot and i want you to know that that reach isn't just for those teachers that do it but then the other teachers see what they do and then it starts growing and it gets shared and collaborated and before long that one little grant can impact a lot of kids and it's just amazing so thank you also to our teachers who took the time in a pretty tough year you know to get together and to take and do that grant process so they could you know do that so uh and boy when you look through that list of all those things going through there you're going like oh my gosh you know if i wish that would happen when i was a kid in school so uh really amazing and i just really appreciate everybody on that on that from the all the board members of the foundation and leadership there with jen pennix and all the way to the stu the teachers who got together to make those grants happen so thank you thank you dr b next on our agenda we have consent and on consent this evening we have personnel claims payroll we have a series of minutes from various special session and workshop sessions and we also have the approval of gift applications and we have several different gifts for cherry tree elementary salesforce had a matching donation on behalf of cherry tree elementary's patient david dorkin the blackbaud giving foundation they awarded 150 grant to cherry tree on behalf of the arthur j gallagher foundation and they also received a 52 donation from cyber grants on behalf of charities aid fund foundation of america and the education foundation because you know through the grant and goblins run they donated 250 dollars to various wellness initiatives at carmel middle school clay middle school clay center college wood prairie trace town meadow smokey row and woodbrook and with all of those items on our consent agenda may i get a motion to approve consent second second discussion all those in favor of supporting consent please signify by saying aye aye motion carries 5-0 thank you next on the agenda we have action items our first action item for this evening is our 2022 school board meeting dates and i am presenting we've had a couple different months to take a look at our meeting date so before you i have a maggie on the table to approve the school board meeting dates for 2022 so moved second second thank you jennifer discussion see no discussion let's take a vote all those in favor of supporting the 2022 school board meeting dates please signify by saying aye aye motion carries 5-0 thank you next on the agenda we have the resolution and form of lease for renovations and miscellaneous facility improvements at carmel high school and to that we turn to mr mcmichael thank you this has to do with the 21 or 2021-2023 facility projects uh which we uh introduced and recommended to the board probably a year ago and and you adopted an ident virtually identical resolution to this for the performing arts project which as you know we have awarded bids and that project's under construction this resolution is for the natatorium which is a part of the project and so this is kind of the first step of getting financing for that project and the financing in this case will as it was for performing arts will be a um a lease lease rental bonds uh i can explain more about that but it's through a building corporation the same as it was for the performing arts projects and and just briefly in indiana a school board a school district is limited to debt of two percent of the assessed valuation so when large projects like this are done that would exceed that and so the the mechanism for providing funding for large school projects is through this concept of a school building corporation and and that corporation is is of course a legal entity separate legal entity and their sole purpose is to in this case to to build the facility and and then they lease it back um this is all very legalese but they essentially lease back the building um and the lease amount is exactly the bond payments and um and then provisions in the the agreement are that once the bonds are are paid off then the title to the property goes to the school corporation so that's that's all predetermined and there is that's the sole purpose of of a building corporation and so that's kind of the background of why this is is necessary so with that um i've asked bill payne uh ceo and partner at fanning the howie to do a quick what we refer to as a fly-through of the facility i thought you might it'd be interesting for you to uh of course you're aware of the project but this will give you more insight as to what it will look like when it's finished and this includes when we started um we we presented it as building a second natatorium and the project really has evolved and then renovating the existing netatorium and so the project has evolved into we're seeing it as one project and so as we we build a new part we're also renovating the current natatorium not at the same time because we'll certainly maintain a pool all the way through this project but we'll basically build the new the new part and then when that's completely finished then the last six months of the effort will be to renovate the existing editorial but i think i thought it would be nice for you to see how this will all fit together and be one very nice complex for for the community thank you thank you mr michael madam president members dr beresford it's our pleasure to be here tonight to present to you the design that is almost complete for the new natatorium complex uh i'm pleased to have two of my key team members that are really doing all the heavy lifting here and will be participating in our presentation cyril sidjic to my left is our project manager project design architect and has really led our entire team and we have a big team because a complex project like this requires a lot of specialty player specialty design professionals we've been working closely both with central office administration as well as administration and leadership at carmel high school i'm disappointed mr inskeep left he said something about getting a frozen turkey into the refrigerator this evening he's seen his presentation a few times before but we've been working very closely with him throughout the pro without the project uh kate talkington our project coordinator who is remote will be doing the driving and she is responsible for much of the drawing development that you're going to see here this evening and by the way what you're seeing actually is a manifest manifestation of very detailed orthogonal drawings that architects love but for the purposes of explaining the building design it's much more fun to fly around and fly through so with that i'll turn the floor over to sarah sid to talk about the exterior of the building the addition you know this this has gone from a natatorium addition to an athletic complex and when we started the process we started meeting with staff and collaborating with staff not only on the floor plans and the spaces and size of spaces but as well we talked a lot about the exterior and we wanted to be the first thing that we were told is we need to be thoughtful about the rest of the building so that we pull in details things of that nature that are elsewhere so that it's a unified design so as you can see at the main entrance we've pulled the similar details as the administrative area and the canopies in that soft r canopy which is just so cool to see at the end of the axes of the main entrance drive and that will literally be a new door 21 so the usage and circulation is going to be very similar for students as they've they've worked through learning the building from freshmen on to seniors now but i think as bill gets into the floor plan you'll see how the circulation has changed and it's a little more directional so it'll help with some of the flow early in mornings at high entrance times so to the west which is all glass brick and glass we're required codewise to have three well four stairs actually so we've got our three main stairs that get you from the spectator area down to the first floor so that you can exit the building but it was really important to make that a light and lacy space and i mean to the point where we've looked at details we've we've pulled the mullion grid off of other areas of the building and incorporated that um the two entrances doors there are actually not entrances they're emergency egress doors so you won't have students going in there but it's very light and lacy it's going to be a really energized space at that spectator concourse and you'll be able to see it from the exterior with and the other thing that we incorporated at the main entrance was a large plaza area and that that can be used for pep rallies team events student get-togethers freshmen events before school starts things of that nature so we've been thoughtful about how that space works the pedestrian versus bus versus cars and how we get kids safely to and from the parking areas to the main entrance so okay let's go to the north of the pool this area the brick portion is actually in the spectator concourse then where you see the white that's actually metal panel and that is the mass of the competition pool the diving tank as well as the therapy pool and again we've united sort of the brick with the metal panel which you see in other areas of your building as you go along to the east side this is really the hard connection of the existing pool to the new natatorium and what we've done is really focused on a lot of the details on the east elevation of the existing pool and united those into the east elevation of the new pool we've got a gentle arcing slope it's just really soft and it does a lot of great things for the interior of the competition pool space it lends itself to acoustics which bill will get into and then we've got almost nearly all glazing in the competition pool area on the north end so it's a really dynamic space and as i said this was generated with not only staff and administration but our team our engineers and it's been a huge collaborative effort okay bill yeah why don't we move on in okay so kate let's go on to door 21 or as i affectionately call it area 21.

classroom i know cora will do the right thing in any situation i am thrilled to have her in class and hope she does well throughout her years at redpath cora shannon congratulations foreign good evening from dear meadow we have cali birnham she is a kindergartner in mrs grimes's class and this is what mrs grimes had to say about cali i nominated kelly for the student of the month award because she's an excellent student that is all that always displays star behavior she's always a kind friend to others in the classroom the lunchroom and on the playground she's willing to jump in and lend a helping hand to her peers she listens and pays attention carefully so that she can follow directions thoroughly keep herself and others safe and do her best learning cali always tries her best on her assignments and strives at times to go above and beyond my expectations especially during writing she accepts responsibility as well and as a student i turn too often when i need someone to model positive classroom behaviors cali is respectful to staff classroom guests and her peers it is for these reasons and so much more that cali is deserving of this high honor for her student of the month [Applause] so this is kayla helmer and she's in mrs mitchell's class i'm going to read you what mrs mitchell has to say about you have you read this it's awesome kayla has a very infectious strive to better herself academically every day i am extremely proud of her for being selected as tz student of the month and encourage her to continue to put forth her best effort in everything she it is a it is a much larger entrance than what you currently have at door 21. just to the right is the sro office for visual control and security as visitors are coming into the doors of course most of the students i think are coming down the trail and coming in these doors in the morning and so one of the things that was adjusted the very beginning was the orientation of this much larger stair that takes you up to the main level so students are literally coming in and moving right into the main high school there's lots of lobby space here so really this this area 21 is serving the varsity gym the existing pool as well as the new pool and it's appropriately sized to accommodate all those functions your students are throughout the building throughout the day and so these are not just for competition a lot of these spaces will be actively used for active learning collaborate collaboration or even relaxation during the school day so i think we provided for that let's swing around to the opposite side of the staircase and we'll show where the interface of the existing building occurs thanks so as you maneuver around the stair we have multiple options underneath the stair where we're going to display state championship trophies and other branding items right to your left and this actually is the existing exterior and then you would move in and of course that's the existing office going into the existing natatorium as well as the glass over there you can see let's go back and enter into the natatorium at the lower level then cape so this is secure it can be secured for either during the day zoned off for exclusive use or during spectator events you'll notice that we're stepping down here slightly from the existing floor level this actually is a more economical approach because the building sits up rather high you may be aware that the grade slopes off as it goes to the north what we're doing here is providing casual seating and clear glass now that provides views into the existing natatorium so again there's a lot of visual connection between new and existing it's an entire complex you can imagine that you might have events where both are actively being used for competition and movement this concourse takes you down then to concessions immediately to the left and then moving down let's go north cape along the conch along the concourse so the stairs that cheryl mentioned that gets you immediate egress exiting come down from the upper level to your right where you see blue these are locker rooms for athletes we also have what we call a hospitality room we'll enter that from the pool side let's go on up to the top here to the upper concourse via the stair we will have 1200 seats exclusive of standing room so we have a big spectator load one of our favorite architectural terms vomitories feathers are exclusive from this you bring your own let's go on through the vomitory into the seating area yeah it's a roman term roman architectural term for uh spectator events okay so here we have just entered into the natatorium into the seating area we're actually standing where disabled persons or handicapped seating is available you can see the main 50 meter competition pool so what we've done with the complex has made each one of these provide a different type of opportunity this is a two meter depth full so there is no shallow end in here it will be an extremely fast pool the gutter will be similar in design to iupui's natatorium it does have movable bulkheads in it it's 25 meters wide so this pool provides much more bather square footage and that's the first thing that we learned was as a carmel has active swimmers more than 700 students 700 athletes so all of these pool tanks together will help to provide those students from having to come in at five or six in the morning there'll be much more water surface area available for them on the far wall you can see both acoustical treatment a large scoreboard and also natural light coming in from translucent panels up above swinging over here to the south then we have a diving tank so that's exclusive from the 50 meter competition pool it's a different water temperature and obviously a different depth by providing this we will then have the opportunity to use the existing pool almost exclusively for swimming activities in pe we will not need to interrupt for diving use in that pool we also have a physical therapy pool which is immediately adjacent to the diving tank that you can see there it has a higher water temperature level it can be used for physical therapy for warm up and cool down and a number of different functions and staff is really excited about how that's going to serve both educational programs as well as athletes i'd mentioned the hospitality room this is immediately adjacent to the main start finish blocks which are seen right there in the foreground that will be used both for coaches but then during the day it can be classroom space instructional meeting space and it has light food service capabilities let's go back up to the seating deck okay as we swing back out here you'll notice on the north wall all of this glass it's just going to be a fantastic space to be in both for competitors and for visitors alike and spectators of course in working with mr insceep so you'll notice that we have both a combination of stadium seats as well as bench seats one of the things that we've learned in designing pools particularly when you have those long age level competitions that go throughout the weekend is people need some relief and so we have both casual seating where you can still be part of the activity and yet not be at a bench seat or we also have up at the very top a cross aisle that serves for countertop seating high top seating so again there's a variety of types of seats that will accommodate all types of uses for spectators we'll probably also have some press locations as well as camera positions up there as we swing back to the south end again you'll notice that we have a strong visual connection to the existing pool so here we are in the main level of the high school more casual seating and again introducing now clear glass where the green semi-translucent glasses presently so whether you have competitions going in the existing pool or the new pool you'll have immediate visual connection i sort of skipped ahead a little bit but on the lower level there is also access directly from one pool room to the other so swimmers can move coaches uh and so forth officials can move quickly yes there's the ramping system that takes you between each pool so we're wrapping up what we call construction documents we're fine-tuning our drawings at the end of construction documents those drawings will be suitable for contractors to bid on those will be wrapped up in the month of december so cheryl and i would be glad to answer any questions you might have oh sorry this is the second level of 21.

congratulations to you guys you know it might be easier instead well i'll go ahead and read all the names they still deserve to be uh recognized uh mary martinez we had olivia hellmuth [Applause] gillian gatlin degenhart [Applause] hayden coles emily versino samuel brewer and then we had aubrey brains and julie elston thank you for everything you've done for the students [Applause] it's also usually kind of maybe maybe ask if there's anything you could share about the road and the success of the program and you know what you might be looking forward to in the future sure what i will share is just how incredibly proud i am of this group because last year we reinvented so many things our original printer actually went out of business and so we moved to an edition online and eventually printed the news magazine format so our staff was never together now for one minute because we had students who were virtual students who were there two days a week with the hybrid and everything but so their accomplishments and kind of the reinvention during the covert year i think is really amazing and their talents and their achievements really speak for themselves i'm very proud thank you congratulations you guys uh you know all the success that comes through the program you're making your community proud your school proud and the board administration as well we got you guys uh bro of the team do you have any idea how many years running we've had an award comparable to this yes you do okay thank you so much would you like the other um thank you i'd just like to congratulate the inklings and uh both mrs elson and the staff uh we're really proud of the eagles uh as as we've talked about here a little bit uh they're sort of the standard of excellence uh in indiana newspapers uh school newspapers and i think most importantly is that gives kids an opportunity much like a team an opportunity to get together to bond to work on a common goal and a common cause to produce a great newspaper and so it provides that space and opportunity for our kids to really grow not only to learn journalism uh journalistic excellence but also just again to have space to get together and uh like i said they form a bond for sure much like a teamwork throughout the season and they do it for the whole entire school year uh you could see them getting together after school in the lab working on their on their articles and interviewing people i think the last thing i wanted to mention is that the sheer professionalism that the mrs elston teaches kids not only do they uh you know conduct themselves appropriately but when they're interviewing people they use the ethics and standards of professional journalists i think that's something that stays with our group a long after they leave crown point high school and no matter what walk of life that they choose to go into it's not journalism so we're really proud of the inklings and especially all these students who put in so many long hours to create such a great publication [Applause] i could have our inspiring educator finalist and winner come forward please [Laughter] anybody here from the chamber crossroads chamber first of all we'd like to thank them for what they do to support the inspiring educators award and congratulations to all of you ladies on your accomplishment obviously the goal is to educate our students to the best of our abilities and inspiring educators nominated by crossroads just brings you guys to the forefront of the top so congratulations to all of you i'll read the accommodation resolution accommodation the crown point board of school trustees is honored to commend these individuals for their meritorious achievement we are hereby resolve the board of school trustees the crown point community school corporation wishes to express sincere congratulations to these ladies for being named crossroads regional chamber of commerce finalists and overall winner dory draseau for overall corporation winner for the for the school year border school trustees publicly recognizes this achievement and renders it permanently to its minutes to be preserved for public posterity in this 22nd day of november 2021 our first finalist kristen albrecht from lake street [Applause] kathleen zechariahs [Applause] marianne howard [Applause] lewis tapped [Applause] thank you amy burcham from call point high school lindsay eastling winfield [Applause] and our overall winner from eisenhower jory dusso [Applause] [Laughter] if you guys want to squeeze in here [Music] thank you congratulations [Applause] we also want to thank their principals who are here tonight thank you guys for coming to support your teachers appreciate you being here [Applause] okay we'll just give it let's give it a second for uh anyone that is trying to depart to move on okay patrons comments paint your patrons registered to comment on educational issues um over the last couple months what we've been doing is just go ahead and reading the um reading the guidelines for comments to anybody who is here so some of you have heard them before but if not i will read through them now so the guidelines the board will hear patrons legal residents of center township or winfield township wishing to comment on educational issues at the regular business meeting of the board of school trustees held in public patrons must sign the sign up sheet provided in the back of the board room uh which i have here prior to the start of the meeting when their names are called to address the board they will move to the podium in front of the room state their names spell them for record-keeping purposes addresses state their names and addresses and topic that they will be addressing if patrons have prepared written statements on topic they may present them at this time a limit of three minutes is allowed for each speaker we've been asking mr angel to be our clock keeper i believe at 30 seconds he gives you a warning so he's not trying to erupt you just giving you an update on how much time you have left the portion of the meeting during which the participation participation of the public is invited shall be limited to 20 minutes unless extended by a vote of the board so we will keep an eye on that and determine if we need an extension speakers are to refrain from speaking on personnel issues and student issues i do believe this evening some of the topics that are on our list are going they do look to be personnel issues i think this evening anyone who signed up you would have been given information to refer to policy 9130 which uh they were states that public comments on personal issues would not be allowed and that if that was the case for you when you signed up that we would be contacting you for further information to collect or give you that proper opportunity to be able to speak on the topic you were here for this evening so let's start off with beth urum good evening beth good evening um my name is beth urum and i live at 12461 pennsylvania place crown point i had originally decided to come here to hand deliver forms to the appropriate persons to inform them of my non-consent to crown point community school corporation regarding the administering of any covid 19 vaccinations to my son i do have those home forms notarized and i would like to turn them over to the administration i have copies for each individual whom i believe needs one i understand that crown point community school corporation is currently not setting up vaccination clinics in the schools as of yet however i sadly feel the need to make my non-consent legally known as i mentioned i had only intended to turn in these forums however in lieu of the most recent actions by governor holcomb i am here with an urgent request for this board last tuesday november 16th i drove to indianapolis while our legislators were in session for organization day i went with a petition demanding hoosier lawmakers use the authority given under indiana code 10-14-3-12 to put an immediate end to the state of emergency representative kurt knisley walked me directly to julie olthoff's secretary where i hand-delivered the petition unfortunately speaker houston did not call a vote however before i even made it back to crown point governor holcomb addressed the press by stating and i quote lawmakers must pass three things to end covet 19 public health emergency in an unprecedented move lawmakers will meet monday november 29th for a one-day session to cont consider preliminary draft number 3651 in the synopsis of this draft there is a language that allows the secretary of of family and social services to issue a waiver which is necessary to claim enhanced federal matching funds available to the medicaid program this allows the secretary to issue an emergency declarations for purposes of participating in snap emergency allotments my question is what in the heck does this have to do with our public health emergency absolutely nothing indiana is either in a state of emergency or not holcomb's actions prove to me that he is holding hoosiers hostage under his executive order which has been extended 20 times isn't it interesting that his eo is set to expire one day after this rare announcement by speaker houston and senator bray to reconvene reconvene the lawmakers to pass legislation legislation completely unrelated to coven 19 before he ends the public health emergency in closing i am saddened by the lack of action by our legislators they have the authority to under the state of the emergency with no strings attached it is clear indiana is no longer under a state of emergency at best holcomb's actions are tyrannical and at the very least disingenuous regarding the health of hoosiers my request to this board is to do what is right be be brave and unmask our kids thank you [Applause] uh thank you uh the next on the list is william theodoro hello my name is dr theodora william theodoro and i am a local physician born and raised in crown point and i'm here to speak on behalf of my daughter who is a student at the preschool at the learning center over here and i'm here today in regards to the preschool curriculum i'll take a step back and just say that my daughter is on the spectrum and therefore is a special needs student and we were initially referred to the early childhood development program by a psychologist and after our daughter was evaluated by a certified special education teacher a speech pathologist and an occupational therapist she was invited and accepted into the program for early childhood development uh her first year in preschool there was phenomenal in fact i would i would consider it amazing the progress that she made was um it was uh undeniable to us we hadn't seen her make progress like that uh for her entire life uh so we were very happy with the program and uh with with her progress and uh that she was making and um due to her birthday being very close to the cut-off for her age and because of covid we felt she lost out on some time and then also you know given her background we felt that we wanted to give her one more year in the preschool to get her better prepared for kindergarten as we all know the early intervention is important for all children but for special needs children it is of the utmost importance and a lot of these children if they do get early intervention can uh can have uh very normal lives um and so um so we had her do another year in the preschool and unfortunately uh after she started we very soon realized that all the progress that she had been making the year before had completely come to a halt and in a lot of ways she was regressing uh from the progress that she had made the year before um we inquired about this and we were told that that changes were being made due to laws in indiana which it turns out it was not actually a law but more of a recommendation at this time that classrooms be combined with special needs children and regular children and i just want to go on the record and say that i am totally for that i think that's very important so this year the uh the classes were changed and they were changed to a ratio of two to one special needs children to regular children again i'm totally for that but unfortunately the curriculum was completely changed everything about it was completely changed there no longer are um individuals that are trained to take care of children like this uh running the classroom but rather uh people that aren't and uh also uh it's a play-based system uh there's actually uh no learning whatsoever they're they're actually not allowed to teach them numbers letters and other basic things that all children should know uh and there's also no structure whatsoever to the classroom it's it's literally just playing it's time sir if you could finish up okay okay oh finish it i'll give you a couple of seconds here yeah so um so i i i honestly believe that this is not ideal for any child but particularly for my child and all other children with special needs they really need that structure and they um and i you know i don't necessarily think that uh that just playing with uh very little guidance is very useful for them we removed our child about a month ago uh from the five days a week and she's only now going two days a week we are paying for her to go to a preschool um that she has shown drastic improvement over the last month since she's been there sir we'll have to have to cut you off there yeah i'll have to just a reminder when you come in can you please state your address also sure uh aliki theodoro 814 haymarket circle crown point indiana i'm going to kind of piggyback off of what my husband just mentioned um let's see all the changes have been made to the program uh is accepted by the state is definitely not seen as best practice lake central velpo and munster school district all have licensed special education teachers in the class the entire two and a half hours while play-based programs can be a great and effective they are not the best learning environments for kids with special needs this is being ran as a daycare in fact i've seen daycares with better curriculums and what i have seen so far this year everything i was told last year by her licensed special education teacher regarding what and why things were the way that they were and how they were doing things in class was beneficial to her being on the spectrum has been absolutely tossed out the window i can provide multiple examples if need be this is a program through a public school system that is meant to assist and provide the necessary tools for special needs students to get them ready for kindergarten and beyond these kids are already delayed in their abilities and not having a structured kindergarten readiness program is only hurting them not helping them for their future early vention early intervention is key is what i'm consistently told by our therapists physicians and licensed teachers if i wanted a play-based learning program i would have sent her to a montessori being on the autism spectrum free play is not effective in her social development one of the main reasons we decided to hold her back because of her social delay there is often a breakdown in play with other children how is her social development going to approve when it is their choice on whether or not she decides to partake in an activity additionally other special needs children require more individualized help with other things such as holding a pencil learning to write etc if these are not something they are doing in class how is this helping them with kindergarten readiness from doing my own research the one person that is new to this program that i'm confident to assume has been the force behind this dress exchange is the preschool coordinator who also happens to be the wife of the superintendent excuse me we're not allowed to take comment on personnel and okay i mean okay we could talk about the curriculum educational cert you know okay then um i guess we'll have to follow this up because there's a huge conflict of interest in what's happening and i have a pamphlet or something i can give you to provide some evidence that i have pulled together so if i can provide you a packet that would be if you have it with you you're welcome to leave it with miss green i will that would probably work out best sounds good [Applause] um aaron piecraft and this is in terms of resignation so um okay yeah let me remind you that you know as we stated earlier those who may be speaking on this topic we will plan to find an opportunity for you to be heard in our time as well so okay yes my name is aaron picrap 10131 benton street ground point i'm a parent my daughter's on the cross country team i'll do my best to keep this general words cannot express how devastated my daughter and our whole family is over the coaching situation girls cross country team watching our friend be so unfairly treated by the school and community we love let me let me just stress that when you came in to sign up it was our intentions that we knew there would be some people speaking tonight on the topic that miss pie craft is here to speak on um dave can i could i add something yes um so there's been several several letters received by the school board several emails and i can assure you that well i'll speak for myself and you guys can chime in i spent the time to read every single one of them um and they were all very similar and so our you know we need to address this but we can't address personnel or student information in public but my understanding is they will all be given an audience or a forum to state their point of views that they could otherwise do that they cannot do publicly is that correct i will jump in right here and say yes so tonight when you were when you came in you were given a sheet of paper that had policy 91 91 30 i believe 91 9130 and what that does is it kind of lays out what the next steps will be for that so those of you who came in and signed up for this we've got your name and your address so we will be able to contact you through rds are you still going to be able to set up a time to hear further what your concerns are with the situation how will that work if you're voting tonight to approve resignations we'll have to move forward with our meeting and we'll move forward if you stick around you'll find out where that goes i would say one of the options that one of the options we're talking to the individual at the podium please is that the board can look at delaying that and until a later board meeting and that that's all we were here to ask correct and he investigated fairly before a vote was made so the opportunity to be heard will be present before the board if they so choose takes that opportunity and moves forward with that okay all right thank you yeah so while we go instead of me trying to guess who might be here to speak on what topic i'll continue to read out the names and please just you know raise your hand and defer if you were intending to discuss something we just said we'll take care of later okay and uh ellie piecraft unjin choi miss choi please uh come to the podium and state your name and address my name is anjin choi i'm 1411 brookside drive monster indiana and my daughter is going to school here so i have right to say as a mom can you start thank you for finally providing me with additional access to rds i was able to review the information my ex-husband provided the school registration as i requested a copy over a year and a half which was denied after review it is clear that the information was erroneous my ex put down his hands at full custody he has emergency contact and my daughter does not live with me which is not this is an example of the reason the payroll parenting in divorce because information he provides is obscured i can presume that this document from the registration is a foundation for the disparaging treatment i was received as a parent for my daughter from the crown point school system including um there's nothing unusual on this list as i'm sure you can see um total prepays for the month of october 2021 357 337.57 and then next in your packet you'll see a list of regular claims dated today november 22nd 2021 did anyone have anything in particular that they were questioning on the list of claims for this month no i don't really have anything unusual on here we've got a couple of insurance payments um really nothing unusual um you've got a total of uh claims dated today 210.39 if we're ready to move on to the financial report okay all right uh next in your packet you'll see the fund report ending october 31st 2021 ending balance and education fund one million four hundred forty three thousand six hundred fifty five dollars and fifty cents operations ending balance one million one hundred twenty six thousand seven hundred one dollars and fifty five cents total for all funds if you go to the last page page five you'll see the total on all funds five million eight forty eight seven forty three twenty six and then you'll have the list of the depository statement and bank balances you see the bank balances there at the top and then you'll see less the outstanding checks for each bank and then at the bottom you'll see the ending balance um for all bank balances october 21st 2021 5 million 8 48 7 43 26 you'll match that up with the fund report and you'll see that we're balanced to the penny and then lastly in your finance packet you're going to see the expenditures for bond 2021 you'll have the balance forward from july 2021 through october 2021 was 1 million 872 and then the expenditures that we've had here in november thus far will bring us to a balance of expenditures for bond 2021 2 million 52 000 160 714 impending any questions i'd like to recommend for approval yeah so i'd just like to emphasize that october was a three payroll month so payroll claims were higher in october and actually will also be an expensive month in november i think is based on the increases that we provided the teachers and based on what were what i plan to present tonight there's some back pay involved with that so just be prepared for that when you see that on our november financial report so we have the uh it's my recommendation that the board approve of the consent agenda as presented i make a motion to accept second okay we have a motion and a second to approve the consent agenda any questions or discussion hearing none all in favor all opposed promotional passes next item on the agenda is reports first of all assistant superintendent dr french yes this evening we would like to provide you with an update from our counseling team and so they're going to present tonight so do we have an order or mrs ward would you like to start for winfred so some of the initiatives that are going on at redpath i got an idea on pinterest a few years ago and so we had refrigerator doors donated um and so they are mounted on the wall and the office and mrs crone's husband he does metal work and so yeah so you can see the sign he cut out there so it's a way for us to recognize student work using a mary allison grant last spring we made the volcano room where kids can go when they have a lot of big emotions so we put wall padding on the walls and we have pool noodles that the kids can hit the walls with when they're upset and then um next actually in december 4th i get to go pick up dory who will be our therapy dog at red path so we're all very excited about that we have a partnership with first baptist and we have kids hope so that has brought in some community mentors to work with our students once a week they meet with them during lunch and recess and then they also provide um 60 snack bags for our backpack program so that those go home with kids um for the weekend so that they have food over the weekend we've also had some great um success with the second step curriculum that we started this year and we've had positive feedback from students and teachers so and the kids are definitely making connections in the classroom as well miss handy would you like to present for tz i just wanted to give you a couple of updates um about tv um uh in the spring we talked to you about second steps and how we were rolling that out k8 so i wanted to give you a little bit of what students are learning we just finished our first unit at tz and that was all about goal setting and one of the great parts that they learn about in our lessons is that when we have goals we're going to encounter roadblocks right and so we processed how do we overcome those roadblocks is it by asking for help is it reframing our thoughts so that we're not going to give up and so those lessons have been really successful and we also did all of our safety lessons so our required lessons for abuse prevention and we're actually expanding our use of our safety rules instead of just using them for unsafe situations regarding abuse we're actually using them in the building so did you spot a red flag was a student running in the hallway or did you see an adult that you don't recognize how they're checked into the office and so our students are really owning safety in our building and they're feeling empowered and so that's been really amazing to see as well and the last update that i wanted to give you was that we are continuing the paddy pack program so that's the weekend food program at tz and we've had some amazing community donors so we are able to fill 50 packs of food a week that go to families and that is up over 15 bags from last year so we're really thankful for the community involvement thank you miss bundy was hiding back there thank you hi there um to piggyback on what ms handy was talking about with our safety rules the first safety rule is to know what's up and so with our kiddos their address their phone numbers um parent guardian name and when you go into the classrooms now years ago 24 years ago when i taught kindergarten um they had to know that that was part of the report card and you just check it off well that's gone and so you go into the classrooms and do you know your address do you know your phone number and oh my goodness they do not and so i got a hold of mcdonald's and i said could you donate something for our kiddos who would know their address my number and mr jadel wonderful man absolutely so he brought some over so i went through and all the kiddos if they knew they had my phone number checked it off sent it in the mail so that they would get a piece of mail so that was probably 76 of our kids so far have gotten that so that's always fun that was a great thing to do with a personalized note that i sent them also our grant that you approved last month we are working hard on getting our sensory boxes replenished from years ago i believe five years ago so we're replenishing those and i think that's it for now we started that over there and i've had good feedback as well so thank you very much thank you thank you thanks for joining us so my name is jessica brianas i'm the director of guidance here at the middle school last year i actually got our 21st century scholars application added to our enrollment form so when families apply it goes through every single family so far we have 24 students already enrolled in the program i have 28 additional families who said yes that they were interested in applying there are about 120 families who i did not get an answer from but then the flip side of that is i had well over 100 families that said no so what that does is it greatly decreases the number of families that i will then be hunting down to see if they're interested in applying i have completed the state required training on child abuse prevention for our sixth seventh and eighth grade students this consists consists of two lessons from the teen safety matters program which is from the monique burr foundation i applied for and received four grants from the mary allison foundation the first was to supply items for our tiger ticket store the second was to supply additional items for our sensory room the test actually helped apply to start last year the third was to supply feminine products for all of our girls bathrooms for the entire year and the final was to supply alternative seating or wiggle seats for one of our resource classrooms i also planned college go week each day teachers shared parts of their college experience what was college like what did you enjoy why did you choose what you chose those kind of questions and during lunches students watched college tours lastly last year miss handy and i saw students 655 times as of today as a sole counselor in the building i have had 200 students request to see me and have seen students 543 times good evening everybody so first of all i think that all of us do so much more than we have time to share with you guys and if at any time people want to talk to us about the things that we do just let us know and we will cover whatever it is that you want us to cover all things school counseling academic college and career readiness the prepping the stuff that we do at the high school and then social emotional stuff that we focus on also so the reason i say that is i don't have um 15 to 20 minutes to discuss all of the things that we are doing i will i do want to say right now because i would forget rose stevens also is the other counselor she is one of the things i did not mention we're doing 21st century scholars working with the edge edge 21 and so she basically runs that at the high school and so i wanted to make sure that i mentioned that and that's to help everybody that is a 21st century scholar hopefully earn that honor when they graduate so that they can go get full tuition paid for in indiana some of the things that i'm going to go over again i'll probably be kind of brief about these things if anybody wants more details about it please just let me know and we will talk to you guys about anything that you want one of the main focuses all encompassing academic academic success career planning and then social emotional stuff would be graduation pathways which is a huge change for graduating in the state of indiana and a lot of our time and effort is focused on understanding the legislation behind that understanding what it means for a student to go through each different pathway and if i were to get into each different pathway everybody would probably be kind of confused and so i won't but just know there's there's a lot of different ways for students to graduate and because that's changing curriculum at the high school is changing how we interact with students and families and the things that they are able to do at the high school level and beyond is also changing and so a lot of our time is spent in a little bit of a different way as the counseling team and the office working with administrators and trying to fully understand exactly what the state is deciding to do with how we want to prepare our students for life beyond high school whether that is college career or maybe joining the military in some fashion and so really quickly some of the daily happenings that high school counselors that we are doing currently and we will be doing in the future we've become test coordinators which is kind of interesting so we are responsible for istep ilearn s-a-t-a-c-t p-s-a-t and also the asvab and planning and preparing and getting all of the students that need to take each one of those exams ready to go and planning a testing day organizing that at the high school and so that's been a huge undertaking for us but again they're all important tests and thankfully this is the last round of istep and we will be moving to the sat which is part of the graduation pathways that i discussed earlier we'll be giving that to all juniors in the spring we do s-a-t p-s-a-t and a-c-t testing throughout the day two times a year psat one time a year and we actually have a national merit scholarship semifinals from our school so that was that's pretty cool we do student meetings college prep career prep prep scheduling and academic planning 504 meetings iep meetings attendance helping with proper placement academically and educational setting for students working with families working with students working with staff when appropriate collaborating with students and staff and families when appropriate regarding conflict crisis resolution and we do the best we can to meet needs and i think this is something that all of us benefit from our partnership with cummins and having people that are a little more prepared and have more expertise in helping with mental health because ultimately mental health is paramount if a student has so many things going on that they can't be educated in the classroom we need to work to help them so that when they're in the classroom they're productive making progress and doing well and so again having inside our buildings cummins and helping with funding with cummins because the private insurance and medicaid that stuff gets kind of complicated but any type of funding that we get to help with cummins and helping students get the help that they need through cummins if they don't qualify with the medicaid is also really beneficial for us and then outside resources of course that's a family decision but we provide those references for people and then last few things that we also do just throughout the day diversity club we help with eligibility for athletes we do scheduling and curriculum mapping all of that at the high school we're actually getting prepped for scheduling in december in february helping with enrollment and withdrawals and anything else that made come across our plans thank you thank you very much and i just wanted to mention too just like our teachers can continuously have different mandates from the state our counselors are no different so there's continually initiatives that they're being pushed out and they do a great job and take on so much more responsibility especially with the mental health needs of all of our students increasing at younger and younger ages not having the resources to be able to support them really appreciate their creativity and their collaborativeness we have yeah thank you very much thank you thank you next item is the super distribution yeah so just a couple of quick items here before um have krm share a share brief update but just like kind of give some shout outs our tk classroom at redpath presented their turkey poems and did an outstanding job presenting in front of their peers we had our guys and dolls musical which i saw on friday night and nothing short of spectacular and students and staff did a fabulous job and the fine arts continue to to shine brightly at greencastle we're bidding out our rid path and deer meadow our hvac controls so we're accepting bids for that and we're going to be updating those um items those are the last two buildings and we're using some of our esser funds to take care of that so that's much needed and then finally we'll be receiving our tag grant so that's our teacher appreciation grant distribution on december 3rd and we receive just over 66 000 that we'll be distributing to highly effective and effective teachers here sometime before christmas so we'll get a nice little uh chunk of change there for in time for the holiday season so just a few things that i wanted to share and then i have mike montgomery here from krm that's going to briefly update us on how we're moving forwards with the building project because our timelines are going to going to ramp up here and i'll turn over mike good evening when mr gibney asks that we give a update tonight the question was what new information might be helpful and you've seen all the drawings and so we thought we'd just kind of list where we're at you know just summarize as much as possible we started this process in april so we've been involved in an eight-month design process with the with the staff from greencastle schools and creamer companies and it's been great at every step of the way it's been a great team where there's been a weakness somebody's filled in all the good things that happened and on top of that you got a football stadium delivered a lot faster than you might normally expect so really everything's been going really well so on december 6th 350 sheets of drawings and many many pages of specifications are planned to be issued to competitive bids general contractors we thought we'd just run through tonight you know just a highlight of the things that are included in this so as board members you got that right top of mind if somebody from the community would ask you or if you've got any questions now would be a great time to to bring them up so on the left-hand side is uh the work is to be included now and it's basically the mackinawy center remodel space the connector link between the macanally center and the high school a lot of high school remodeling including new science rooms the renovation science rooms which i managed to emit from this list a renovated kitchen and expanded improved seating in the high school a reorganization of the west hall spaces a couple of these are alternates which i'll talk about in just a minute here to control pricing and then of course the new off-site softball in baseball so those are the major components that are going out to bid on december 6th and then just as a reminder just as soon as those plans go out to bid the intention is to finish and do the second phase of design work so they though so that can go out to bid a little bit later in 2022 and you can see on the right hand side that includes the middle school renovation and some of the highlights of those are the classrooms and the secure entry and office areas at the primary schools one of the highlights is tazongas elementary humidity control and if you remember on that one we had some study work done and some analysis so we think we have a solution ready to start in the design of that and then the high school parking lot upgrades and to just go back and kind of touch a little bit on each of these at the mcinally center probably the the single biggest highlight is the renovation of the the locker rooms on the lower level that's where most of those dollars are going to be spent but up on the upper level those uh there's uh the kind of concourse area there'll be a continuation of the new uh connector link a new new flooring new concession space and uh some new ceiling work and lighting so it'll kind of be a refresh and upgrade and also if you remember the doors as you walk the be the northeast corner doors you'll be taken off the hinges so you walk in you'll walk right into that great gym that you guys have the connector link a few highlights of what's in that project this is a reminder it's obviously a walkway a connecting walkway between the high school and the mackinaw it's a new auxiliary gym along with that and then in the lower level is a a weight room and a practice wrestling area and maybe something we didn't mention real clearly last time was uh there's an existing area space there on the east side when the low one-story portions will be remodeled into pe uh locker rooms there'll be a new elevator so both floors of uh mackinaw will now be ada fully ada accessible and uh just a highlight uh we have been talking quite a bit with the the staff and the project team about phasing the construction because you have to remain in school you have a primary function here but and it's we think uh everybody has contributed a lot and that's been worked out and then in the high school renovation project as i mentioned it's a big science renovation basically a gut of that entire area and rebuilding including the new uh greenhouse the greenhouse will be replaced the largest single renovation beyond the science areas is in the front entry area where the media center will be changed into three classrooms you know the media center will be flipped across the hall bumped out into the uh uh um common uh courtyard area and and rebuilt it'll be a brand new media center kind of an innovation space with lots of technology and then they'll be where the two classrooms are as you just as you walk in the front door at the high school will be taken out and turned into a student collaboration area so a really new look right there that we hope students are really attracted to and give a good fresh space all the classrooms where we see the new ceiling tile painted walls all new flooring there is some technology upgrades involving the cabling between the projectors and the uh and the plug-ins for the projectors all the door hardware is going to be changed it'll be lever style there's a lot of not a lot but there are some ada issues it'll be taken care of going into the classrooms and some of the doors that swing out are kind of head bangers those will be changed so it's a provide a higher level of safety and then the restroom finishes will be upgraded along with this for the kitchen area the way it's kind of shaken out is the kitchen remains where it's at but it'll be new equipment in the kitchen and uh the servery area which if you remember how it is now you walk in it's really crowded just kind of a linear line it's going to be changed to more of a grab and go where the students will walk up to different stations and have their selection and more contemporary and better and healthier food choices for the for the students and also i'll have more seating that's uh it's too tight right now and it'll increase the seating by about 40 percent um and then the west area of the lower level of the high school back where kind of the shop class is and there's some of those spaces that aren't particularly well used and kind of was added kind of a good idea to do is to reorganize those and make them very usable spaces three classrooms and maybe a little bit less wasted space back in that area also some of the coral room finishes are going to be upgraded and then finally the off-site baseball as you remember it's one new baseball one in softball and just the right orientation the concessions building with the ticket booth walkers and one of the technology components is there's going to be a fiber optic connection from your transportation building out to the ticket sales office and then up to the uh the press boxes are on top of each one so you'll be able to stream events and sell tickets and people will be able to reserve them bleachers new parking the lights from the existing two state uh fields are being reused they're in pretty good shape and they're structurally very strong and if anyone asks you about the detention area and there was some debate whether it'd be wet bottom or dry bottom there's going to be a dry bottom detention area no ponding of water and there will be irrigation for these fields and so i'll just stop there for a second and see what questions you might have if i didn't mention something or sparked an idea of something you're curious about you can answer any of those well on the right hand side is a little bit more detail on the intended bidding and awards schedule you can see december 6th is the date that the plans will go to the printer and uh these days almost everybody downloads the construction documents for bidding if you're a contractor you can go to eastern engineering website and at no charge to them they'll be able to download the plans and specs and we found it to be a very free and open accessible process december 21st will be a pre-bid meeting at the high school with contractors uh january 13th is kind of a big day that's the day that the bids are to be opened and read aloud and that'll give the team about a week to review them discuss them do do reference checks all those types of things and then if everything falls into place on january your regular january 24th board meeting we hope to have a recommendation for bid award for the for the school board and uh kind of the final detail is that these plans and specifications are being issued in two groups big group a is essentially the baseball in the softball field group big group b is everything at the high school in mackinac center and if i'm a contractor i can bid on either or i can put in a combination bid for both and maybe hopefully have some economy of scale there that might might save you still some money so hopefully everything runs smoothly tomorrow with mr gibbety we are reviewing the budget and if we you're all aware price has not been our friend lately labor and things like that but we've been working through it with our consultants and we think we have a plan that you know the worst case happens we got a plan if the best case happens we have a better plan so i i i think everybody on our team has been working out pretty hard and we got a good plan so it says here february uh that the contractors can start ordering their materials organized construction so does that happen in february what is your assumption of start up construction for like um that'll depend a little bit on on the contractor and weather um but uh there we do have we have worked with the schools and kramer companies on a phasing plan some they'll order material that's always the first thing to do get those materials on the way but the first steps that we ask are asking to do there's a new drive on the west side because we're closing in between so we'll have to do that first uh along with that the second thing is um it would actually start some demolition on the south side of the mackinac excuse me south side existing gym they need to do some of that demolition in order to reroute the water line if you remember there is a city 12-inch water line running between those buildings that can't be taken out of service so there's some phasing there so that new west drive and the water line would be relocated and then right about that same time there will be a temporary enclosure built so students can go between the two buildings and also on top of that will be a pathway to for your existing fiber optic that goes between the buildings so your communication continues that way and once they get that temporary walkway constructed their west drive and the water line then they can start digging and at that point the space between the high school parking lot and the middle school parking lot becomes the contractors and we could explain more of that in a diagram better but that way you have a safety division between between the workers and the students thank you mike thank you okay next item is old business there is no old business so that brings us to new business the first thing under new business is an approval request for some compensation adjustments yeah yeah so the goal was obviously to settle our cpa and our contract agreement with our teachers first and now it's time to handle the rest of our employee groups so in your board packets was a proposal to provide a 4 000 increase for our assistant superintendent our director of special education our principals our assistant principals and our athletic director a four percent increase for our uh classified salaried employees a 50 cent an hour increase for our classified our hourly classified employees excuse me and a 10 per day increase for our bus drivers in addition to making some adjustments to wages for our substitute teachers and including the addition of adding a new classification for a retired greencastle community school corporation corporation teacher to earn 100 a day to sub for us just because they're familiar with their buildings they have a lot of expertise and so hopefully that can be something to help minimize the shortage and help keep some of those people involved in our schools so it's my recommendation that the board approved the compensation adjustments as presented i really like the idea of adding a retired school controller i make a motion to accept i will second that okay we have a motion in a second um if i have any other questions discussion it looks good okay all in favor all right well opposed motion passes i'm sorry i i sure brought this up during discussions i assume we do like a comparison with other county schools in our area for bus drivers and custodians just to make sure we're in line yeah we always do that to the best ability with all the employee groups they're not always 100 identical it just depends on where people already are and based on current financial situation as well but yeah that's something that um the neighboring superintendents and superintendents sharing discussed all the time okay next item is an approval request for the 2021-2022 bus purchases yep so we built into the 2022 budget purchase of another mcallister 81 passenger bus at a cost of 148 961 and then also a smaller 14 passenger activity bus at a cost of sixty 66 dollars so this is built into um our budget for and um it's my recommendation that the board approved the ordering of these buses so they can get built and hopefully be ready in time for the start of next school year or shortly after the start of the school year depending upon the chip shortage i got a random question the small buses you don't have to have a cd on the track doesn't that no the white buses you don't have to have cdl and so a lot of our athletic teams and clubs are able to drive themselves which eliminates one of the challenges of finding someone with a cdl right but we are recruiting anyone with a license with a cdl license okay can i get a motion yeah i'll make a motion i'll second that okay motion in a second any further questions or discussions hearing note all in favor all opposed motion passes next item on the agenda is an approval request for for three donations one from the putnam county community foundation to green castle high school art department in the amount of 2 500 the next one is the mary allison children's trust in rid path primary in the amount of 536.42 the third is mary allison children's trust a dear meadow primary in the amount of 4200.

and again ample space concessions movement from the stairs below and obviously access to the scene as well as into the varsity gym or continuing to greyhound station to the south i might add a couple things one is is that we are you know staying within the budget that was presented to the school board and you may recall that um we're in a very enviable position uh we we still anticipate that this will be an eight-year bond and um which is kind of unheard of that this will be entirely paid for in eight years uh you'll see in the resolution two things that i'll point out because you might otherwise have questions one is is that it it gives latitude for 15 years and that's all because you can you can reduce it but you can't increase it and so much like our budget process you've heard me say many times that you know we'll advertise high intentionally so just to be to have the flexibility um but we can again we still anticipate that that it will be an eight-year payoff um and likewise the amount that's in this resolution is is about about 11 percent more than than our current estimates again particularly in these times as you probably are aware um it's very uncertain times with with materials and contractors and all of that but if there were any you certainly would you know will prove everything along the way so if if something unforeseen happened and and the pricing was just way higher than what we thought we'd of course reconsider what we're doing and the timing and so forth but we're not anticipating that at this point in time and this project is scheduled for bid award in early february with construction starting in may being finished in july of 24.

a crown point school high ability program does not start until fourth grade which is not standard like other school districts and in indiana department education also i would like to ask for the information parents committee meeting for high ability program crown point because it is not at the crown point website thank you [Applause] and a mike vandergast yes i guess i'm just curious sure yeah i'm just curious to my i'm sorry mike vandergaste 632 davis circle uh and thank you for the opportunity to speak uh i understand what you had uh the instructions you had given us regarding resignations um i was not aware of that uh requirement before i arrived tonight unfortunately but i guess i'm curious as to when uh what is this a matter of this is a public forum and that's why you do not want to speak about resignations in this forum and if that's the case do we get an opportunity to address the board in a private session is that where you foresee this going but given the circumstances this evening i think this is worth kind of like explaining that you know it is this is definitely just a comment opportunity on educational issues so in any board meeting in the past since i've been a mormon or whatever our policy is just this to listen to the comments we don't have inter you know we don't interact discuss um we'll take we take everything into consideration and then maybe at the in some cases that tail in a minute have a meeting we'll have a little discussion about things that were brought forward in the public comment session or how possibly the next meeting will come up but general generally your comments are made and you would look for a follow-up with uh you know a cabinet member administrator or superintendent to to get to where you need to go with your information i i understand your point uh i guess uh i just want to make sure our voices are heard we want the rest of the community to hear what it is we have to say and i want to make sure that we we don't have that opportunity taken from us right so i i i'd say after we after this we won't go back and forth any further this evening but want to echo mr babjack comments that the emails have came through and we we are going to have further steps in this meeting tonight that that'll probably be a topic of discussion that will you know with your information has been heard your emails have been heard and your comment this evening all those comments that are in that you want to be heard we're going to set up an opportunity at a later time okay i just want to make sure i think shining a light on this subject is important just to make sure things are done in an appropriately transparent fashion thank you for you okay let me comment under david [Applause] one of the primary issues involving personnel issues is privacy concerns and there are federal laws that dictate what can and can't be discussed and we are we are bound by those we're not going to have a trial here to discuss the merits of any personnel issue we're not going to have a back and forth forum to hear the good and the bad you've communicated to us many of you by email anybody who wishes to may communicate by email there's an opportunity to be heard by administrators uh that will all be taken into consideration if we get to that point and and that'll be the end of it we we we're not going to give reasons why we did what we did we're not going to give an explanation of what's transpired to this date because we're not permitted to do so thank you mr hoffman all right michaela vandergaste okay thank you um is that gabrielle uh adonovich my name is gabriel adamovich i live at 8297 doubletree drive crown point indiana i am a lifetime member of prom point i graduated with a few of you here on this board and i know all of your reputations keep you in these positions and i know as a former educator myself my reputation was something i held in the highest degree i know this topic is not being further discussed but when you're trying to stay in education your reputation is everything even more so than your skill your degree a defamation of character can take you out of the position that you've worked so hard to build your whole life so i do i'm very grateful to you for reading our emails and i do hope that this man's character is judged fairly on the totality of his work thank you okay um yeah we've probably met the clock by now right uh do you have a motion from the board to extend this public comment we've exceeded our 20 minutes second moved by mr babjack in second by mr angel if i'm looking at this correctly we have it looks like we should extend to 15 potential minutes i was in favor signified by saying aye can we do a um can we maybe do a count of the people that were wanting to speak that on that same topic so we can make that part of the record the number of people that were here to speak yeah we have um or just by a show we could do it by a show of hands or go by the list and it will just re-extend yeah i think we have six names left on the sheet so that's this should cover that's it yes 15 minutes should cover everyone's opportunity to speak that needs it okay so it's always the favorite thing about the same guy hi i think we may have done that already opposed motion carries 4-0 we'll extend the public comment session by 15 minutes um nick's santa fina santos my name is nick santos stefano i live at 3099 west 136th avenue i assume you all received the legal notices that i and other parents have sent these notices are not intended to be legal threats or the beginning of lawsuits these notices were intended to educate you on our constitutional rights our country is set up in a way that our government gets its power from the people our government cannot invent authority beyond what we the people delegate to it in our state and federal constitutions our government's job is to secure the people's individual rights for example with masking if i don't have the right or power to demand or force another person to wear a mask then the government does not have the power either i realize the state has directed you that if you have an optional mass policy you're required to quarantine healthy kids and if you don't they have threatened you with fines and possible jail time i see no proof of those are no proof that those are anything but empty threats to scare you into compliance over the last year our state and federal governments have overreached and tried to do many things beyond its power our commander-in-chief is making it his main way of accomplishing things but that doesn't make its right it right or mean that we have to comply i have followed the governor's order through the indiana uh general codes sections and i don't believe that the school has the authority to quarantine healthy kids i think that the health department is requiring you to do something that is unconstitutional and you should resist it i search the entire indiana general assembly for anything that had to do with quarantining and found nothing that gave anyone power to quarantine healthy people without a court order from the health department the only exception i saw was a special 72-hour period the health department can use while acquiring a court order i even read a section that said that animal control needs a court order to quarantine someone's dog if they're expected of having rabies so were you to think that a dog in the state of indiana have more constitutional rights and are given more due process than our children i believe lowell has figured this out and that is why they design their covert policy around this is directly from lowell's culvert policy persons of close contacts within three feet for 15 minutes will be informed in addition to parents of children identified as close contacts they will not be required to quarantine but will be reported to the indiana department of health they are not quarantining healthy kids but instead giving those close contact info to the health department so if the health department chooses they can get a court order and do the quarantining i ask you to please consider going with an optional mass policy and i ask you to please push on push back on the state health department when it comes to quarantining i truly believe you don't have the authority to quarantine and you should pass that responsibility back onto the health department thanks for your time [Applause] riley listina hi um i'm ryan lesina 12866 massachusetts street and i'd just like to speak about the cross-country team not at all about the resignation i'm a sophomore student a track athlete and a cross-country athlete at crown point high school i'd like to start out with my favorite quote which is by winnie the pooh it reads how lucky am i to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard this simple phrase completely sums up my team and i's entire 2021 cross-country season this season our entire team got very close walking into practice every day i was completely surrounded by all of my best friends which came as a shock to me as this was my first year participating in cross country after a month or two of summer conditioning these girls felt like my family the team would have so much fun together every single day no matter how hard our workout was i could literally be having the worst day of my life but when i would go to practice my team would entirely turn around from talking to my upperclassmen teammates i have heard that the team dynamic was never like this before unlike most of the high school's teams we were never pitted against our own teammates instead we were to encourage each other no matter what this resulted in our very close and loving team dynamic everything else i have to say is personnel related so i'd like to defer my time thank you [Applause] tom lucina thank you my name is tommy listina 12866 massachusetts street i'm a lifelong crown point resident i would like to speak to you very generally about the topic of protecting our students thank you for letting me speak to you tonight i do not take this privilege lightly and i will not waste your time first i want to thank the board of trustees and i want to thank crown point high school for protecting our young adults i cannot express to you how much it means to me that i can send my daughter to such an incredible institution knowing full well that her protection is your absolute number one priority thank you for what you do every single day now i would also like to deliver a challenge to the board of trustees and to cron point high school as you continue to focus on protecting our students as your first priority please consider narrowing the gap between first and second place let's bring the teachers and coaches closer into a very much less distant second place i beg you if you find yourself in a situation where there is an excellent teacher or an excellent coach who is seemingly being pushed out because of an accusation that very well might be baseless i beg you to explore further i beg you to ask questions go far beyond airing on the side of caution students teachers coaches all deserve this i beg you continue protecting our students first but please also increase the level of protection for our teachers and coaches who stand in okay thank you thank you [Applause] uh sarah miller hello sarah miller 6224 west 136th avenue and cedar lake it's cold in here my first comment so um i know you guys are going to be talking about covid policy later and i wasn't going to speak but just in case i'm just going to speak my piece again um i believe all of you guys are decent guys but i don't think the governor is decent or the the commissioner at the health department so and i'm not happy with the complacency where parents concerns haven't really been addressed to this point so i'm hoping they are tonight government officials are put in place to protect the rights of the citizen body those rights include the right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness freedom of religion and the exercise of rights of conscience and under the 14th amendment we as parents have the fundamental right to make all decisions including medical for our minor children it is up to us to weigh the risk versus benefit and we certainly care about our kids more than the state i want this board to return to mass optional everyone have the option but not to discriminate against the unvaccinated as the health department is in the habit of doing the indiana constitution article 1 section 23 says the general assembly shall not grant to any citizen or class of citizens privileges or immunities which upon the same term shall not equally belong to all citizens and the constitution has been mocked a lot in recent years but is listed as the highest authority in the hierarchy of law indiana code 1-1-2-1 and this is where we derive our freedoms so those who mock it must not like those freedoms when you sought the positions you hold you sought leadership and i'm asking you to lead with integrity if you are not willing to lead i would ask you to resign but i'm not hoping that we have to go that route and then lastly in regards to the action item 5.2 it's on the agenda i'm hoping you guys don't accept any funds that come with strings attached thank you [Applause] luke tricker luke 38 26 west 106th lane crown point luke before you start couldn't just move the mic down a little bit there you go thank you you're good um i think master stupid um you know some of my friends i've known for about a year and a half um have never gotten to see my face so but um i'm new here and i've never seen some of my friends smile ever i hope that this can change your minds about masks which are proven to do nothing in copenh vaccines i know many people that have gotten very sick after the vaccine thank you [Applause] so i believe this one is tom kristoff i can't see the yes tom kristoff see i feel stupid because everyone else here is talking about real important things and this is more confident than i've ever been um the only thing that i wanted oh i'm sorry uh 3784 kingsway drive um there are a couple process based comments that i wanted to make and some of them i think apply here the first is when and how you have public comment periods you have one at the beginning of the meeting and that that's fine it gives everyone a chance to it gives everyone a chance to sorry somebody was texting me as i'm trying to read this damn thing um it gives everyone a chance to speak prior to the deliberations it gives everyone a chance to give you their impressions um however without one a separate comment period at the end even if a shortened version there's no opportunity for you to hear feedback about your deliberative process i heard you talk and say to somebody we're going to make a decision or we're going to vote on something during this meeting but at the end of the meeting they don't get a chance to tell you either you did well or there was things that you didn't consider and that you should have considered and so without that second feedback comment they have to wait now an entire month just to give any any type of feedback um the the second part that i wanted to talk about is uh giving names and addresses um i don't know whether that's a state law whether that's a county rule or whether that's just in your bylaws i looked at your bylaws and it looked like it might just be your bylaws so if that is something that you have the power to change um i i know that there have been people who have not wanted to give any type of comments because of this issue so like i said if it's something that you have the power to change or at least influence there might be some value in that um and then the third is just generally about bylaws i heard a gentleman say that they wanted to give comment they wanted you to hear the comment but i also heard that you can't discuss these personnel issues you can't discuss it that's fine but if your bylaws say we can't even hear somebody talk about this issue and you're not having a discussion you're just outright your bylaws say you can't hear that then that's a problem with the bylaws you should be able to hear that even if you can't talk back to the person thank you [Applause] okay thank you everybody for their uh comments this evening i'm sure we as a board i'll have some thoughts that we could you know but we'll just give one point of clarification your middle point there about giving the name and the address it's an issue out wanting to speak we had a problem a few years ago when when we did a survey and we were getting responses from california so it hasn't it has been a minor problem in that respect but it has a potential to become a greater problem okay let's close the patrons comments section of the meeting for this evening and move to the consent agenda dr terrell good evening for your consideration this evening our consent agenda we have the executive session minutes and the regular business meeting minutes from october 25th we also have the appointment to the crown point library trustees reappointment of marshall anderson for a four-year term a recurrent grant to approve and receive the title ii a a recurrent grant for title 4a the recurrent grant to approve for indiana prime math transition course grant the personnel agenda and then the voucher registered checks as listed thank you dr terrell uh so you've heard the consent agenda as presented by dr terrell do we have a motion to approve mr president i'll move to accept the consent agenda as presented with the exception to remove item g11 from the personnel report and defer that to a later meeting so we have a second second all those in favor and i'm sorry how about questions or comments on the consent agenda any discussion or comments for the consent agenda before we move for a vote mr hardman i believe would probably be able to answer these items three four and five it appears that are some of those new grants where we've been receiving those annually funds are comparable to prior years thank you um well while we're having some discussions this evening i just wanted to mention that uh um you know the obstacles as a board um the open door law that we're not allowed to have these votes outside the public meeting any of any vote on any decision takes place takes place in this room so it's one of the challenges when an agenda comes out you don't can't pre-arrange decisions or have votes amongst us without being you know in the public forum so uh um as you know information comes to us we just like someone else mentioned earlier we have to wait month to month unless we have special sections and executive sessions to get together to actually form a vote and agree um so mr hoffman uh thank you for the motion with the removal of the item that you listed um i want to make sure that addendum's end in the record prior to the final vote it is okay any other comments if not all those in favor say even if i have one comment is there um that's that's as much detail as we can give well i think that i'm just i think the conversation is i think the conversation that we could appropriately appropriately have right now and anyone please interrupt us if we are out of line um but as a board we you know we're we're deciding to defer an item in our personal agenda so one of the items that um in the personal agenda um had a high level of interest tonight and that is the one that we are deferring to another date yes thank you yes all those in favor signify by saying aye aye opposed motion carries 4-0 and we have action items this evening item 5.1 um dr terrell thank you for your consideration this evening we have the crown point school corporation covid protocols guidelines is my recommendation for the board the guidelines beginning december 6 2021 there are several items here and i'm going to read through all of them and then we can have discussion about them the first one is mask will be optional in all of our buildings and facilities second one if the positive number of cases in any building rises above two percent of the building's population including students and staff everyone in the building will be required to wear masks for 14 days next bullet point individuals who test positive for covin must quarantine next bullet point closed contacts will be those identified using the three foot measure sub bullet points underneath us individuals who are identified as close contacts will be contacted by school personnel next sub bullet point individuals who are identified as close contacts will not be required to quarantine if they do not have symptoms but should monitor their symptoms for 14 days next sub bullet point if an individual identified as a close contact becomes symptomatic they should not attend school and they should notify the school and will be required to quarantine next main bullet point mask will continue to be required on school buses per federal mandate we will continue to monitor our own data and compare it to other indicators in our community and our county it is my recommendation that the school board of trustees approved the listed guidelines beginning december 6 2021.

um and then the existing natatorium would be renovated in between july and december of 24 so it will be the end of 2024 before this is entirely finished thank you roger um thank you bill sarah and kate um i think what we're going to do first is get a motion on the table and then we'll open up for questions because i know everybody has a few so may i get a motion on the table to approve the resolution and form a lisa for renovations and miscellaneous facility improvements at karma high school second second thank you questions i have a couple questions one is will this renovation impede classroom availability i'm hesitating but i don't believe so um because the majority of this is is not there now so um which in some ways is easier performing arts for example where we're we are occupying but having to you know renovate while we're occupied this in some ways from our construction project standpoint all the new part we're not disrupting anything that's existing and we won't disrupt what's existing until the new parts finished we'll kind of trade so no i would i don't see how it will impede anything that's existing second question is for you um do you have a process in place to solicit bids from diverse suppliers the architects aren't don't that's not the process that that that is uh handled by our construction management firm okay so yes and they do have a process in place where they work with major contractors and and and provide information and and some you know some resources to support that effort sometimes that depending on the work and so forth that may be in the form of subcontractors or not it just depends um but they but we do make an effort to be as inclusive as we can with minority contractors okay other questions and if not i have a couple um first i wanted it looked as though the road that goes around the school comes back um so that will be opened up once this is complete we will have yeah in some form the the last meeting that we had we it was noted that um as you're familiar with the current arrangement the circle if you will has to be large enough to accommodate buses and it also has to be large enough to accommodate two lanes because otherwise we would have swim parents if it was a single line it would be backed up to the stadium they need to be able to have the second in fact we modified what's there from what was originally built for that reason and so we had quite a discussion about that and even considering is is is this the best place for it basically where it's at now except farther out and uh i don't know that we've we have an answer um but we we definitely are looking at that so there but there will for sure be some type of a bus pickup arrangement and turn around to be able to get back out and then how about the road that is currently closed that goes around the back of the school or the east side the east side yes that'll eventually be open again okay um now the the the flow of the traffic may be different right probably will be actually but um but eventually that road will be there'll still be a road there in other words okay prior to covid we have and i haven't really been into door 21 to look to see if we're even utilizing the the drop-off area i know there was a place that parents could drop things off for students we had some bookstore type of sale so people weren't circulating through the school but it was really confined to one area um well we still have that i didn't see that type of uh yes that touched on it but it the answer is yes and it'll be on the uh as you walk up to what's now door 20 want to be on the right flip-flop it's just flip-flopping instead of being on the left it's all shifted to the right okay okay those were my big questions for now are there other questions katie and then mike mine's more curious and i know this is a rendering but is there going to be a high dive because the ones in the picture were like little ones there's very limited competition for a three meter stand so we have three one meter stands also they're sitting up on a plinth and that can be used for learning to dive off of just a fixed platform however it's designed so that if in the future you chose to add a three meter stand in the middle you can do that so we build in that flexibility in the future if that should happen okay thank you i i would just like to thank you know roger and the whole team for this presentation i mean it i think goes without saying that we are very proud of our facilities here um and the fact that we have this new state of the art which i'm sure is going to be a beautiful facility um you know is appreciated i'm sure by the whole community and even people like myself who've limited access to swim meets but um just to know that we have the facilities and to support our great program that we have um you know we we talked about five p six petes we've got some other pizzas that make that look small in comparison so but thank you to the team and for all the detail that has gone into this we truly appreciate it go ahead katie oh i just wanted to say that i love the rendering like i know this is very fancy but as a board this is very helpful for us to see what we're signing off on sometimes so keep that in mind i just wanted to i was looking at that therapy pool and am i correct that there's a wheelchair ramp that goes down into that pool and that can be really a good thing for some of our kids with special with disabilities that we'll have now an opportunity to go into the pool and that warm water and therapy part of that is really really good the other thing i noticed was um did i see olympic uh circles on the wall there on the way in and uh you know with our two olympians uh this past uh those past games uh i thought that was pretty cool and nicely done i know that's a rendering thing but very nice to see those circles up there and of course we're proud of those two swimmers but uh really very inspiring and uh and i like the uh the idea that we can use that space for educational and meeting room which is always a need at carmel high school so there'll be some really nice spaces that can be used by all the students in and out of the swimming program so well done i have an additional question it's more construction related i'm noticing the large amount of surface area for the roof and on the other project that we had we had a like a water gardener we somehow collected or we collect the all over the fitness yes the the fitness center i don't know maybe eight nine ten years ago when we built that do we have enough i was just i didn't notice that many gutters going down the side on the east side and um there's just a lot of surface area so what are we is there anything we're doing with that water well so actually uh we're not we're not increasing the surface area because that's currently all pavement so we're simply replacing pavement with roof area so it's like almost 100 100 of an increase in the overall hard surface area so we're basically distributing the water storm water in a similar fashion of what we're doing now oh okay well thank you well i i just fought up on the question i mean i don't think her question was water runoff but more environmental right use of it as opposed to it now it's running off the parking lot and going into the storm sewer system is there some way that and maybe we're still early in the project that we can capture some of the water and do something let us let us report back on that we're not presently cr collecting gray water right but uh let us investigate and report back i'm not exactly sure i just know we have that water collection sort of garden area at the other fitness center so if there was a way to i guess repurpose and capture some of that water yes louise thanks um so what's the plan for accommodating parking um during the renovation and after so will it be the same capacity and the closeness you know i'm sensitive to the fact that students have to walk a really long way right to park and so some people uh occasionally get a little bit of a closer space but also um our educators having access to parking like how is this renovation going to impede or impact that so we've been working very closely with mr toby steele on that and on the numbers in fact in fact the numbers have been believe it or not have been dropping so number of student parking permits are down pretty substantially from what they have been in the past and of course with enrollment sort of leveling off they don't anticipate a significant increase there yeah we're going to lose a few spaces on the main campus site but again the predominant use there is for staff there are some limited senior parking spaces on campus and they may have to be diminished to accommodate or offset the loss there but we've already we've built a new parking lot across from the soccer field in anticipation of this project it roughly replaces most the parking most are all the parking that will be lost to this building and then we also also recognize some loss in the front of the building because of the performing arts project going during the renovation though that new parking will it still all be available or will the trailer be there and all of that yeah well the new parking will be available yes the one we just built right that will not be impeded by the renovation yeah okay any other questions okay i would just like to reiterate though that uh for the 700 swimmers out there there will be a pool available for you to train in for the next four years and and then when we get through that time then it's going to be something pretty special but one thing we want to make sure that we communicate out is that the pool will be there and the laps will be done right thank you and then all of this is being recorded so our community can come back and watch this video and see the run the rendition as we move along okay so all right any other questions no okay see no other questions your hand is up is it a question i was going to change orders okay well we still have to vote on this one okay thank you um seeing that there are no other questions at the time we'll take a vote all those in favor of the resolution of a resolution and form of lease for renovations and miscellaneous facility improvements at carmel high school please signify by saying i i motion carries 5-0 thank you very much thanks kate see you katie you had your hand up yeah i'd like to make a motion to take all the change orders together 4.3 to 4.7 do we have a second on that thank you mike all those in favor of taking our change orders together signify by saying aye hi motion carries 5-0 so we will do just that so next on the agenda we have change orders 4.3 to 4.7 those change orders include creekside middle school finishes and renovations the carmel high school performing arts building addition and renovations clay center elementary school the 2021 renovations and that would be the parking lot edition at the high school that we just spoke of and then the hvac replacement at carmel high school and for each of those we turn to mr mcmichael mr mcmichael um i won't go into the specifics of these as you have the detail to report i would note however the so a couple of them the first one on creekside is is essentially closing out that project um the performing arts center is is a significant amount of a change order it's about 250 thousand dollars but i would point out that that's for the the sprinkler system and so it was a part of the original bid request but um we did not get any response and so so the cost it wasn't is anticipated uh it just didn't go through the normal um initial bidding process but we did get pricing in quotes so it's very similar to actually bidding it um but it's not it's not an additional 250 thousand dollars that we didn't anticipate what i'd want to emphasize and then uh the other ones are much smaller than that as you can see from the report and beyond that i i would respond to questions if you haven't okay well thank you mr mcmichael okay first let me get emotion on the table to approve change orders 4.3 to 4.7 so moved thank you katie second second thank you louise discussion well mr mcmichael it doesn't look like we have any questions at this time thank you very much for providing such detailed analysis in our agenda seeing that there are no questions we will go ahead and take a vote all those in favor of supporting change orders 4.3 through 4.7 please signify by saying i i motion carries 5-0 thank you everyone next on the agenda we have the adoption of policy 50 to 40 controversial issues for that we turn to dr dudley and the the team of mike and katie thank you so last month i brought to you for discussion policy 5240 controversial issues and our policy committee reviewed this policy and are recommending some changes in the wording to the policy thank you making a motion on the table to approve the adoption of changes to policy 50 to 40 controversial issues thank you katie second second thank you mike discussion seeing none we'll move ahead with a vote all those in favor of supporting the adoption of policy 50 to 40 controversial issues please signify by saying aye aye motion carries 5-0 next on the agenda 4.9 adoption of policy 55-21 selection of instructional materials and equipment to that we turn to dr dudley thank you so this policy we are recommending that we take information from one of our other policies that i have on the agenda further down that we add the challenged instructional materials to policy 5521 where we're talking about the selection of those instructional materials and so we're taking the wording from policy 9130 and putting the part the instructional materials part in this policy so those are the changes we're recommending thank you dr dudley may i get a motion on the table to approve changes and adoption of new language to policy 5521 second thank you louise discussion katie i just want to make note we're not actually changing the policy at all we're just moving it from one to another so the policy in of itself is not changing it's just where it is where the language is it's moving under what appropriate topic correct okay but we're not actually changing what the policy says makes sense thank you any other questions or comments seeing none we'll move ahead with a vote all those in favor of supporting the adoption of policy 5521 selection of instructional materials and equipment please signify by saying aye aye motion carries 5-0 next on the agenda 410 adoption of policy 9130 public complaints and concerns yes and this policy um has the challenged instructional materials that we just moved to policy 5521 and so the parts on the instructional materials in this policy we're recommending that they're deleted from 9130 as we move them to 55-21 thank you dr dudley making a motion on the table to approve policy 9130 second thank you jennifer discussion seeing none we'll move ahead with the vote all those in favor of supporting the changes to adoption or changes to policy 9130 public complaints and concerns please signify by saying aye aye motion carries 5-0 thank you next on the agenda adoption of policy 7540 computer technology and networks yes this policy we requested that our attorneys review this policy um based on the ever-changing world of technology and also a change in this policy is the use of filtering currently we filter all of our students on devices on campus and off campus but new legislation requires us to also filter that for corporation-owned devices for staff as well so that's included in this policy as well thank you dr dudley make it a motion to approve changes to policy 7540 second second thank you louise discussion mike um i just want to confirm that this has been discussed with staff before this policy has been and then it will be communicated again once the policy passes yes correct thank you and i just want to confirm that the filtering is only for our developer our school owned devices that is correct okay but it is a blanket for everybody students and staff currently we filter all devices on campus the only change is if it's a corporation-owned device off of campus for staff that's where it would be filtered okay thank you very much any other questions okay see no additional questions maybe let's take a vote all those in favor of the adoption of policy 7540 computer technology networks please signify by say 9.

thank you dr terrell you've heard a recommendation to prove the covet protocol guidelines as listed beginning on december 6th 2021 we have a motion to approve second uh moved by mr babjack and second by mr angel um i'm assuming we want to have some questions or comments for dr terrell on this recommendation uh i'll yeah i'll start um you know what i like about it is there's some consideration and thought uh put into what's going on in individual buildings so i can appreciate that that makes sense to me um also should things you know should things become more difficult in those buildings and then there is a contingency plan for that so um i appreciate the amount of thought that you guys put into this to making a little bit more custom as opposed to a blanket approach across the whole school corporation and i think now is the time to give this a try so the december 6th deadline is probably good timing it allows the parents that choose to get their children vaccinated to do so offering them if that's the protection that they want to offer their kids and they'll have the opportunity to do that go ahead so just to give you an idea currently in our school corporation before i get to that let me state you know we've been having been able to comment at meetings and some of you that's been frustrating well now that it's an action item we can comment so we do take into regard everything that was being said at the meetings but personally the two not two things when you bring up policy and law wonderful medical expertise i love that but i would just ask in the future when you bring information such as comparing to us to a school corporation of lowell or griffith you put apples to apples griffith has a total of 2100 kids total in their entire corporation uh low 3100 our high school loans got 2 900.

motion carries 5-0 thank you next on the agenda um adoption of policy 7542 which is actually a deletion of policy 7542 correct dr dudley the recommendation is to delete policy 7542 because the information that is contained in this policy is now in policy 7540 thank you dr dudley may i get a motion on the table to adopt the deletion of policy 7542 second second thank you mike discussion see none we'll take a vote all those in favor of deleting policy 7542 please signify by saying aye aye motion carries 5-0 thank you and we have one other the adoption of bylaw zero one six seven point one voting dr dudley yes thank you and this bylaw um the changes to this bylaw are precipitated from new legislation that allows individual board members to participate and vote in meetings through electronic means so the changes in this bylaw reflect that legislation and when i brought it to you for discussion i did check the indiana codes and the correct codes are on here the first one is repealed and the new code has been added to that thank you dr dudley making a motion on the table to approve changes to bylaw 0167.1 voting second thank you louise discussion katie um i just wanted to read out loud for um the final paragraph of this policy i think is good a member of the school board may not participate by electronic communication if the school board is attempting to take final action or do one of the following so these are things that we're not allowed to do electronically and i just thought that would be good for the audience adopt a budget make a reduction in personnel initiate a referendum establish or increase a fee establish or increase a penalty use the school board's imminent domain authority or establish raise or renew a tax so those are ways that we cannot do it virtually to do a vote for those specific reasons so i just wanted to like i thought that would be good to kind of share thank you katie other discussion mike you're looking yup i and i know that dr dudley has already said that this was initiated because of a change in the statute basically we are mirroring what indiana code permits us to do so that we have that flexibility if the board so determines that we want to take advantage of these not being physically present but being able to participate in the meetings thank you i will add though that a majority of the board needs to be present for to have a meeting okay thank you any discussion or other comments see none let's take a vote all those in favor of language changes in the adoption of bylaw zero 167.1 please signify by saying i motion carries 5-0 thank you everybody we had several votes this evening next on the agenda we have a discussion item and to that we turn to mr mcmichael the carmel dads club management agreement thank you carmel schools and the dad's club has had a very positive relationship for over 55 years this is essentially an updating of the agreement first as a result of um the new play center elementary and and the new construction at carmel elementary we needed to change some reference to orchard park for example uh and and being able to reference the new clay center elementary school secondly the amount that the dads club pays the school district for use of school facilities has been reduced slightly to recognize the fact that carmel high school in particular but carmel schools will be having access to the new dance club facility so they're very very proud that they're of their new facility that will be available soon and and i know jim minsky is very uh excited about the ability to be able to use that facility and then thirdly there's been [Music] some adjustment in terms of the way they the dance club provides about 35 000 a year to the school district and so um and so we're proposing to distribute that money more to the schools and less just to the school district in part primarily to number one the schools of course interact with the dad's club and and the students that participate in their programming and as you might imagine that can be challenging from time to time and so so they very much appreciate um some recognition financially with that and and but what's really driving the change then in terms of the distribution is the schools are receiving less than half from a revenue that they used to receive from the exclusive beverage provider in this case it's from pepsi previously it was coca-cola and so there's a there is an attempt here to offset that a little bit that money is very important to the schools it provides them with some some discretionary funds uh to use and so uh it's frankly not particularly meaningful to the in the context of the entire school district but it's very meaningful for the school so um that said and there will be a few uh editing changes um mr kirschner for example noted that there's like this is has been around for years so so it refers to the use by carmel the city of carmel and clay township well as you know the entire township is is a part of the school district now so it's just taking out the word carmel and then a couple of other things um when this agreement was written by church church in hitler we weren't focused on on safety and security like we are now and and so there will be some additional language that that will note that basically the dads club will be required they already do this but it'll state it in this agreement that they'll be required to uh have their employees have background checks and background checks as approved by the school district so they and they do that now but it'll just be put in as a part of the agreement and so i think there's that maybe a couple other minor edits that you'll see before we actually ask you to approve this thank you very much i guess we'll open it up for discussion and first i'd like to say thank you to mike for looking at this so closely and identifying some different areas for us that um we might need a little more clarification um mike do you want to start off with comments i mean i just you know thank you roger and church churchill and then of course thank you to carmel dad's club i mean the the relationship and the ability that um they provide us is you know again goes to the strength of our community um not only do we support schools but athletics you know that i guess the only question i have at this point is well is there a change from the use of the softball facilities at prairie trace no it's not it wasn't contemplated in anything here okay because i mean it's just marked out on the exhibit a that oh i think that's because um as i'm remembering now uh when this was drafted we had anticipated building this new what was then the new softball complex at prairie trace and and moving it basically from cherry trees and at the end obviously that didn't happen and so that's the reason thank you any other questions or comments louise will this agreement be amended at all with the new facilities i know they with the new facility at the high school being updated upgraded all of that um i know that carmel dad's club leverages the high school for a lot of the swimming activities so i didn't know if that would be no that's that's for the swim club not the dad's club so i'm trying to think that the work that we're doing at the high school doesn't really have an impact uh to the dad's club other than you know they'll they'll enjoy the any renovated facilities like like up at the stadium eventually the swim club is separate but the swim club is a different entity yes gotcha thank you sorry about that any other questions or comments at this time thank you roger should we have any additional questions or comments we will certainly reach out to you good and then moving along we have the first reading of policy 9161 audio video and digital recordings on school district property dr dudley yes thank you so we recently updated our student records policy and at that time our attorneys recommended that we also develop a policy on audio video and digital recordings to protect our student information so this policy outlines for our our stakeholders our parents our staff as well as our students when video audio and digital recordings are allowed and when they are not allowed on school property and obviously in this policy as it states in here we obvious you know parents want to go to the football game and videotape their child playing or they want they want to go to a performance and as long as it's not a copyrighted one they want to videotape their child playing in the orchestra and obviously that's still allowed but we do talk about videotaping within the classroom within our school buildings for purposes that are not educational purposes outlined in this policy so this policy was reviewed by our attorneys and our policy committee developed this policy in order to make sure that our student information is protected thank you dr dudley open up the florida questions anybody from katie i'm just peggy backing on what she said um it was very intentional that we talk about you know that parents coming you know recording like you know first day of school meet the teacher night you want to take a photo of your kid and the teacher or famous hoosiers projects like definitely absolutely we want parents to take photos and celebrate all those things this is really kind of the areas outside of that thank you katie any other questions comments great should we have additional ones we will send those along the way and then we will anticipate on having a final vote on this at the december 13th meeting thank you thank you dr dudley and dr dudley we have more for you jumping onto reports 6.1 our student data report which is our graduation pathways you are in leading that yes thank you so this evening we have a report for you on graduation pathways and we actually have miss valerie peel one of our assistant principals at carmel high school that's going to share information and several years ago we shared information on the graduation pathways this will become a requirement for our class of 2023 so this year's juniors will be required to use the graduation pathways in order to graduate and miss peel is going to share all of that information with you and we'll be able to answer questions that you might have so i'll turn it over to mrs peel well madam president school board dr b thank you very much for having us for having me here and giving an opportunity to talk a little bit about this um i think it's important just because as we are moving into believe it or not we are starting to schedule our students for next school year already at this time and so we've been having a lot of conversations with our students um our current ninth and tenth grade students and then we will be scheduling our current eighth grade students uh in january and so this has been a big topic of conversation already within our school and so to kind of update you so that if you are having any questions or hearing things from parents or in the community just making sure we have all of that information as dr dudley mentioned the indiana graduation pathways are the new graduation requirements that begin with the class of 2023 so our current seniors are the last group that will graduate using a graduation qualifying exam which is the istep exam that is a pass fail and students were required to pass that test in order to meet the graduation requirement beginning with the class of that requirement does not exist and so one of the things that we really are happy about philosophically with the graduation pathways is instead of this one-size-fits-all exam that every student had to pass in order to graduate and they had to keep taking over and over and over again if they weren't successful on the first attempt the graduation pathways framework really does give multiple different ways for students to demonstrate they're prepared for college and career readiness and so depending on what a student's particular path is and depending on what a student's strengths are we have lots of different ways that we can meet those requirements for students so that's something that we're really excited about that opportunity because it is going to allow us to do a lot more the counter side to that is it's a little more confusing to explain it's not a two sentence you have to meet these requirements and you have to pass istep it is a little bit more involved and it's a lot more nuanced and so again as we're starting to talk through scheduling and looking at students plans for four-year plans there's a lot more to think through as part of that planning process so to kind of go through what the different things are that are required and basically the way we look at it is there are three parts to it and sometimes these parts are affectionately referred to as the three buckets for a few of you that have been on the board you may remember when we talked about this the first time so basically what students need to do is they need to complete each one of the three buckets successfully so the first part is earning an indiana high school diploma and i'll talk a little bit about that in just a minute but that's their credits that they earn in high school the second piece is that they have to learn and demonstrate employability skills in one of the areas of project-based learning service-based learning and based learning and then the third one is they have to demonstrate one post-secondary ready competency and so again we'll talk a little more detail about what all the different ways are that they can do that so the first part is bucket one as we refer to it is earn an indiana high school diploma and this requirement should look familiar because and i'm knocking on what as i say it that requirement has not changed at this point so what students need to complete in order to earn a core 40 a core 40 with academic honors or a core 40 with technical honors is continuing those same requirements the the state has not changed what those credits look like and how many credits in which areas they need to complete so our students will continue to have the plans to do that the second requirement is learn and demonstrate employability skills in one area and it's important to note again that students only need to complete one of these options in order to meet their graduation requirements we know we have many students at carmel high school they're going to complete multiple different ones of these but in order to meet their graduation requirements they just need to do one one of the options is a project-based learning unit and we have developed project-based learning units in two of our courses biology and health specifically so that students can meet this requirement those are two classes that are required for graduation all students take them they're great units they're great things that allow students to really take that project-based approach and go more in depth with their thinking and so that is an area that students who are completing those courses will take that unit as a part of the course and meet that requirement then by doing a little reflection at the end of the unit that we then document we do also have service-based learning opportunities that is a requirement that could include any number of different community service projects either through the school or through an outside organization um athletics performing arts we have many service-based clubs or clubs that do service opportunities as a part of that so they could do that and then also a work-based learning option so if they work a minimum of 50 hours either paid or unpaid at a part-time job or an internship or anything like that they could meet that requirement so again the goal is that students have to complete at least one of those in order to meet their their employability skills requirement the third bucket is the post-secondary ready competencies and this is the one that i will say is the the biggest meat of what we are really working through that's new to us for the students and so what students have to do again is demonstrate competency in one of the following we again know we have many students that will probably meet multiple of these but they must demonstrate post-secondary ready competencies in any one of these one option is to earn an honors diploma either the academic honors or the technical honors diploma also meets in addition to meeting their first requirement it meets the third requirement as well the thing that's a little bit challenging about that is that we don't know until the end of their eighth semester completely if they have met that requirement because one of the things included in the requirements for academic honors diploma is that they have to earn a c minus or higher in all of the courses that count and so we do occasionally have students that in that a semester might earn a grade that they were not we were not anticipating and they could miss that academic honors diploma in the past what happened was then they earned a core 40 and they were able to go on but if that is the only thing they have met in their bucket three now that would put them at risk of not being able to graduate unless they went back and retook that course so we really don't want to count on that as the only way to meet this third bucket because it could end up very late in the game having some tough conversations with students and we really want to try to avoid that there is a minimum a ct score that's listed there and then i do want to talk a little bit about the sat because there is an existing sat score that will meet the requirements as you are aware replacing istep for our federal accountability in the state of indiana is going to be the sat and so we will be giving the sat to all of our juniors and students will take it in their junior year in march during the school day and so that will be one opportunity that students will have to take the sat if they meet the requirements from that attempt at the s.a.t that would meet their bucket three requirement the one thing that's important to note is the cut score listed here is the existing score the state has said once they give the sat to all of the juniors across the state they are going to re-look at that score and determine so that score may change for the class of 2023.

so when maybe you see my expression because i'm not one that holds back and you see me rolling my eyes that's why because you cannot compare a school corporation that we have one building when you're trying to put things in perspective of how we're trying to keep your kids safe and continue the educating process so that's all i ask but i do greatly appreciate everything that's been said the last three meetings we do listen we do read emails as mr babjack has mentioned i just want to make sure that in the future when there's something that there might be a disagreement or another remark that needs to be made just please try to stay to facts and things that actually compare crown point in our situation like a hamilton southeast or somewhere down that has the same type of enrollment as us is all i ask that's all i have and then i want to get these numbers so currently with that two percent rule per school crown point high school currently three positive cases taft seven wheeler two eisenhower nine jerry ross ten which means you'd be just a couple cases away from going to the 14 that 14 day mass mandate lake street 2 macarthur 2 solon 3 timothy ball 10 again same situation winfield 4 learning center zero total right now 47 students and six staff so obviously now with the change starting on december 6 if we go to a vote of approval these things will be considered when those decisions are being made and changes might need to be taken place that's all i have for this with uh dr terrell as mr angel mentioned that it brings a question to me so let's say a school corporation bumps into two percent and they start there so a notification is going to go out to the corporation or to the to the families of that school that they will be in mask for 14 days when does that how do we i'm sure some of this hasn't been thought out yet because it has to be a you know in in the moment of the game to be able to figure this out but now you know monday you have uh 2.2 percent and wednesday you have 2.5 percent and friday you you know it's those cases is it do they roll for 14 days i guess that's the right way to say it does each case so case one will roll for 14 days and then they drop off by day that they drop off so actually we did spend time working on this with that scenario and what we're looking at is the initial when we hit that mark where we get to the point where we're at two percent within a school population will trigger the 14 days we will continue to monitor what's happening within that building to see if the cases are increasing declining where we're at with that part of that is going to be a little bit tricky because if you continue to add on and without those rolling off and so we'll be working through that to see what will give us the best read on what is taking place within that building itself because it would it would be safe to say that a you know case one drop should drop off after 14 days as well right but i i don't know maybe maybe or maybe not mr angel's intentions with those numbers but um i look at that as a pretty hard and fast stop for you know we're we've been the numbers that he read have been fairly consistent for the last two months they're a little bit higher now than you know they may have been three four weeks ago but um i i think it gives it gives me a peace of mind making a vote on this that we're not far away from this trigger and i'm not saying we want to get there and i want to you know but uh if you're concerned if you're um worried about an aggressive nature of a of a potential covert policy plan that that governor or that that stop is not far away to per you know for those that want to be a mask to feel the protection of the mask at that level um something else i wanted to david if i may comment on that before you move on so one of the things that as we look at the color-coded map around the state that the state has used for the last several months when they look at the different things that determine that one of them is the seven day positivity rate and we're not saying that what we're looking at is the same as the positivity rate that the state is using per counties but with the percentages they're giving at blue is the best color a county can be and that's five percent so we're looking at two is where we have set in the trigger so if our county had two percent everybody would think that was the greatest thing that we had accomplished that so we're saying that that's the mark where now we're going to go back into being a little bit more cautious again debating whether or not the are effective or not that's not the point it's putting something in that can kind of be a stop gap as a as a measuring stick for us i had uh the period there um well just something i if this isn't neither here nor there on the policy this evening but i wanted to hope and stress that our building leaders are keeping an eye on uh bullying it's come up on the streets and in the community i've been you know we hear about it and it's existed for our entire lives but i i think this should in this case there should be kind of a zero tolerance policy for um you know a bowling of someone who makes a choice of wearing a mask or not a mask and that should be nipped right away when it's hurt in our buildings i don't know i just kind of have a strong feeling about that mr hoffman wanna come back to you do you have anything to i do first i'll comment on the on the uh policy of allowing people to come and speak i've heard many times that we're not doctors and we're trying to prescribe mass we're not prescribing anything we are not doctors we don't profess to be we don't we don't profess to understand all the medical signs number two i hear people come in and they're going to read to me what the law is i have to tell you i've been an attorney for almost 44 years so don't tell me i'm a doctor but also don't come in and try and tell me what the law is just personal opinion with respect to the mass policy i'm very conflicted within the last week i've had three family members contract covet one of them is my older brother who has several qualifying conditions so i'm concerned about his well-being i'm not here to debate the affecting effectiveness of mass but you go on the internet and find about anything you want to support your position but i did read an article this week where there was a an extensive study on masks and and they determined that there's a significant benefit to the wearing of mass to prevent covet the biggest concern that i have is that as this weather gets colder and we are more inside uh the predictions of following last year as well of increased cases of covet um i i personally would prefer to see the starting date deferred to the beginning of the next semester which would give us a period of time to see whether or not the the the greater restriction to indoors is going to have a significant impact on this another thing that i read this within the last week or so is the fact that they're finding out notwithstanding the the prior belief that there's minimal effect on children from covid that they're finding many of the children who have contracted covered are having long haul symptoms so i am one who tends to prefer to err on the side of caution and i would prefer to see this i i think it's a good recommendation but i'm not certain that the timing is right it was my comments i appreciate the words well everyone thanks i appreciate todd's recommendation well maybe if anybody's collecting their thoughts and anyways collecting their thoughts and maybe one make further coming i do have a uh brian smith who couldn't be here this evening he sent me uh he did send me a statement and asked me if given the opportunity to read it so i feel like this is a decent opportunity here so this is a statement from brian smith unable to make it but he said good evening i wanted to apologize for not being present at tonight's meeting the timing of my absence was not ideal as important issues were addressed this evening i felt compelled to provide a statement on certain matters in the agenda this evening tonight i would want the record to reflect that i support the recommendation presented by the superintendent related to crown point school covet protocols the recommendation sets for safety and control measures that would reflect the specific circumstances of our community even more so the individual schools within our district it allows for stringent measures such as mandatory masking only when the data related to covert positivity in our community would support such a move the recommendation further respects the autonomy of the individual student and parents to make such choices which are appropriate for their child based upon their circumstances lastly with the recent approval of cova vaccination for individuals 5 to 13 years of age parents may choose for their children to now be vaccinated if that decision is in their child's or household's best interest the availability of the vaccine has eased several parents prior concerns the objective has always been to keep students in school with a little interruption as possible to maximize each student's education cooperation from parents and students will lead to continued success of our school corporation for which our community has come to expect that was from brian smith well members of the board we want to uh if there's nothing else or todd if you don't have any follow-through we'll we'll take a vote on the recommendation uh ty is there anything you'd like to add you know the only doctor just a couple other things that i'd like to address as well with this um i want to make sure that both our board and our our stakeholders understand that we have continued to be in contact with legislators as well with our health department trying to gather as much information as possible even as recently as sunday afternoon i've been communicating with senator nia myers legislative assistant regarding the vote that's going to take place tomorrow to end the health emergency in the state of indiana as being recommended looking at what that how that's going to impact us so we continue to work through that um i think other things that our people need to know is yes while we are seeing an increase right now and i could understand why people would be concerned with why are we doing this if that is what we're experiencing i do believe that the triggers that are in place will help us maneuver through that also though continuing to look at our own data has been something that we've really been important to us as a corporation as we go throughout this last multiple months dealing with it and as we've continued to look at our data we have had mask requirement as minimal as we could per the state's recommendations and in all of our extracurricular activities we have not seen increases in positive cases as well and those are from all of our students not wearing masks so we do believe that this is a responsible move to do at this time and we will continue to look at that and that's not to say that if there if there are significant changes and things come about in the future we'll do as we have done up to this point and that is continue to make the appropriate decisions and take appropriate actions at that time appreciate you guys and your support with this and the work that goes into this in our schools our parents our students as well i have one one other comment talking about listening to people we've heard all the comments of from from the last several meetings about positions regarding masks we also received many many many emails from other parents who don't feel it necessary to come in here and say yes we support masks we've got how many students in our school corporation over nine thousand pushing ten thousand right okay we've got the group here that says we're opposed to mass there's a substantial number of people out there who prefer masks and believe that's in the best interest of their children too so we take that into consideration as well the good news is they will still have the ability to wear one i understand and so you know and like brian uh like like mr smith said in his statement i think he made the point that uh you know families will get to do what they feel is best for their own families so i i appreciate um people having the you know now everybody has the ability to do that kind of thought oh well another something else that um i i had to come across it with our own family in the last couple weeks maybe the people that no don't know but everyone's gonna have different opinion on this but the testing and availability availability of results seems to have stepped up quite a bit um yeah i went to a cvs locally and with a child that wasn't feeling well and we had a a test done in about 15 or 20 minutes so i i think that's actually more to me that's a lot more important than maybe other people but if we are responsible and we again continue to try to put this responsibility on our community and the families in our community to think about others when these situations come up i think that this could be helpful that we have the tests available to us as well i just have one one last comment i just thought of as i was thinking through the comments that were made this evening that is those of you who are concerned about us distributing or giving out vaccinations in our buildings in our school buildings and therefore turning in feeling the need to turn in the notarized document saying that your your child should not receive vaccinations in school that is absolutely your responsibility as parents we will not in our schools try to convince you to get them vaccinated or take that upon ourselves to to do i mean that's just in my mind that's unthinkable um it's not something that we will ever pursue here in our district and i can't imagine across the state of indiana that that would ever get to the point where they're trying to vaccinate kids in schools without parents permissions i understand the idea of clinics and vaccination clinics we're not going there either but just so you guys understand where i appreciate where you're coming from at the same time though i think it's important that we just say that if you go to our website underneath the covid tab you'll find more information regarding that our statement is there regarding vaccination clinics and what we uh what we do and don't do just so that way you can have a resource to go to for information with that thank you okay last call for a conversation on coverage policy look for a vote all those in favor signify by saying aye aye opposed all right motion carries three to one um move to 5.2 approval to apply for and receive the governor emergency education relief fund mr hartman thank you mr president uh seeking your approval this evening to apply for and receive funding from the government emergency education relief fund this is in the amount of 91 198 this money was spent uh actually last year when we were either in our hybrid or in a distance learning mode and we provided uh khajiit hot spots to students so that they could access the internet and then we also purchased ipads with the money to support our early childhood students who had special needs for delivery of remote instruction and related services seeking your approval tonight to apply for and receive the funding thank you mr harvey heard recommendation approved to this is the one we're using for the class of 2022 if students are pursuing this option but for 2023 that score may be adjusted the state will rating for information from the state after we give that we also have have the asvab as an option which is the military entrance exam we've given that for a number of years to some students and students have been able to meet that score through that option so that's been a opportunity there are some state and industry recognized credentials a microsoft office credentialing that we give through some of our classes in our business department the certified nursing assistant and the emergency medical technician which if you recall are two programs that we brought in house and actually teach in our building now to our students so if they complete those and pass the certification exam at the end that would count um and so those are some other opportunities i'm going to talk a little bit more about the career and technical education concentrator here in just a minute um and what that looks like but students have to complete a state-approved career pathway the other option is apib or dual credit classes and students earning a c average or higher in at least three of those courses can meet that requirement that way as well if it's an ap or ib course they do have to sit for the exam the corresponding exam for ap or ib although it does not require a minimum score earned for that exam so again as we look at all of these one of the things that we've talked about is that there's lots of different ways to do this and lots of different opportunities for our students which is a great thing but we also really want to start talking with students about what they can start planning for early on because again we don't want to wait until their junior or senior year and then realizing maybe they haven't met one of those score requirements and now we're trying to figure out how are you going to meet that bucket three so one of the things we're really looking at is those career and technical education concentrators and what i think is great about this is first of all it's a great opportunity for students to start career exploration early on in high school which i think is great for all students regardless of which diploma path they're on or what they're pursuing to give them some opportunities so we have we are very very fortunate at chs we have lots of different career technical education pathways and i'm going to show you those here in just a second available at the high school on site we also have some additional ones that are available through our partnership with j everett light our career center so if students are are traveling to the career center there are some additional options that are available to them there the way the career and technical education concentrator works and i know that the board has been involved a little bit in this process because we've had to make some adjustments to some of our course titles and some of our course offerings and we greatly appreciate your support as we've had to work the last year or two we've had some additional changes maybe more than usual to try to get this aligned is that students have to take in a career pathway three courses in sequence in order to meet the career technical education concentrator so they have to take a principles course a concentrator a course and a concentrator b course and all of these are year-long courses so there are full two semester courses there are no one-semester options in the concentrators and so what we want our students to do is really start thinking early on about which concentrator might be a good fit for them and encouraging them to maybe start one of those concentrators as early as their freshman year or their sophomore year because again a number of these concentrators are three-year pathways and so if they're going to need three years to take all three of the courses if they wait until their junior year they're not going to have time to get that in and meet the requirement that way so we really want to start looking at and we're already starting to talk with we're going to be talking with our 8th graders we're talking with our 9th graders and our 10th graders to say which of these pathways might be of interest to you and then go ahead and take maybe at least take that principles course in your freshman year or sophomore year for one thing we've also talked about the idea that not only does it give students to an opportunity to explore a career they are interested in it it may also help them figure out what they don't want to do and if they take a principles course in their freshman year and they think gosh i don't want to go into this area now it would still give them time to potentially shift to another one of the concentrators and pursue that option so that's something that we're really trying to encourage conversations you can see and i gave you a copy of this document as well some of the courses in some cases will allow for concentrator a and concentrator b to be taught concurrently so depending on the particular pathway and it varies by pathway there are some cases where they can take concentrator a and b concurrently we also have a couple of the options the emergency medical services and the certified nursing assistant that can actually be completed in one year with all three of them taught concurrently together same thing with the courses that are offered the pathways that are offered at j everett light again that's a program that takes multiple periods in their schedule for the whole year but they will complete the requirements for all three courses in that concentrator potentially in one year so there will be options available for students if they don't start a pathway until the junior or senior year but as you saw from the great list we feel like the sooner they can start that the more options it provides them first of all and just a great opportunity to continue that career exploration and then if they complete all three courses with a c average or higher they have earned that bucket three requirement and they don't ever have to complete a test a minimum test score on any sort of standardized test assessment so we know for some of our students that can be a really good option as well so as far as things go we do have all of our course offerings our program of studies is available online i know we have students that are already looking at that looking at the offerings exploring what they might be interested in as i said we are currently scheduling our ninth and tenth graders for next year so we're already having those conversations with students um and starting to look at what they might be most interested in um and we would encourage uh students and their parents to have those conversations and take a look at those options and then as we go into january we'll begin working with our eighth graders um and we'll have more information for them and we'll be having some of those very similar conversations so we're excited about it but it is definitely a lot more involved than maybe what we've had in the past as far as those graduation requirements so we just want to share as much information as we can and make sure we are are presenting all of the different options to everybody so they know what's available so that's all i have i'd be happy to answer any questions well thank you very much valerie that was very thorough and um it's it's nice to see this come full circle because we have sat here several years ago just touching on this and learning that at one point all of our eighth graders had to have a pathway and we weren't even sure what pathways are but first and foremost we're pretty excited that karma high school has so many different pathways and are so far beyond the the level that several high schools are at this point in time um i do have a couple questions and my first one the language on the four once you get to the fourth um your senior year for several of the pathways it says capstone yes is this part of the capstone diploma or no the capstone is throwing me so i just wanted to better understand that so that's separate from the ap capstone diplomas the same word but two two okay what this would be and what the capstones are designed to be is definitely much more of that when we start talking about like an internship um or at something like that and experiential learning where students those would probably be courses that would not be necessarily taught full-time in the high school where students would get opportunities to go out into the community into businesses um to actually be working in that career area as at least part of the requirements for that course it might not be the entire thing but it would the idea is that fourth year and again if a student begins in their freshman year and has taken three courses that then by their senior year they really have that opportunity to go out into that field and get some experiences through whether like i said it's an internship or an apprenticeship or anything like that okay that's what the goal is for those fourth year courses um i do want to applaud carmel high school for looking further in making things even more exciting for our students my son is in the biomedical principles of biomedical um and he found out this year that that fourth year class is actually going they he get college credit for that so that was a new exciting turn of events for us and i am sure several of the other fourth year courses are you working with ivy tech to develop a a way for students to capture college credit for some of these classes yes absolutely so as you mentioned the biomedical that is one that we actually have all four years of already and so that biomedical innovations course is the fourth year and it does include already some opportunities where students actually go out and do some work in the community with local businesses and things so that's great yes that is absolutely part of that again there's some of these already have some partnerships set up you can see in some of the cases some of our even principals and the concentrator a and concentrator b already have dual credit options available to students so they can already start building that dual credit even earlier than that senior year they don't necessarily have to wait for that capstone and then depending on the particular program there may be opportunities for additional credits in that senior year in those tied to those capstone courses so yes that could happen as well for sure and we are continuing to have meetings with ivy tech and with other dual credit providers to see what more we can continue to align okay my second question for you has everything to do with communication okay so if we have a student who they're you know in their that we've determined their junior year that they're they've not done well enough on their sat or their a ct um what communication goes out to parents because my child wouldn't have come home to say oh by the way i'm not doing well right and i i got a problem so that's not happening in my house and i imagine that doesn't you know that doesn't happen in several homes so what type of communication do we have with parents so they can be part of this process and that they recognize that perhaps they want some tutoring or they wanted to do an online class or something that would really help promote um some institutional knowledge on how to take the test that perhaps they'll do better sure i think there's a there's a couple of different pieces to answer that question one thing i would say is that our hope is to really start that communication much much earlier than even the junior year with families again starting to look at some of these career concentrators as early as freshman year sophomore year so that when it gets to that junior year and we do get those scores back if they've met that bucket through their sat score that's great but we hope we have students that are also already in the third year of a career pathway and can meet the score that way as well certainly if we get to that point when they're in their junior year and once we know those official scores just like we would do with istep if a student has not met that concentrator has not yet met that third bucket somehow through any one of the opportunities already definitely then that counselor is going to be reaching out to those parents and saying let's take a look at that senior schedule let's take a look at what options are available we do give asvab to the students in their senior year and so they would have a couple of opportunities to take that so again communicating that i think with the s.a.t the great news with sat is it is actually much there's much more available for preparation for s.a.t than there ever was for istep if you are interested in doing preparation for sat there are so many different resources that are available of all different kinds and levels and now that students know that sat is going to be given at school to everyone in the spring of their junior year that kind of gives a timeline to that i know our math and english teachers have already started talking about that in their classes and doing kind of practice questions because even just familiarity with the kinds of questions that are on the test can be helpful so i think that's something that we're going to continue to encourage and promote because this can be an sat that students can use to apply for college and use as their scores if they choose to submit them to the university so it can count as an official s.a.t for them as part of their college experience as well which i also think is nice because as we know many of our students are involved in lots of the other activities and so to not have a saturday necessarily taken up by the s.a.t because they're going to take it at school during the school day i think is also a nice thing for our students so do our students will they have to register for that independently or will that happen through the school and how do they pay for that do we pay for that so the state of indiana pays for the one at school yes so there's no charge to parents and then the school will register them all through the system but it is as valerie said the sat is not a graduating qualifying exam but all 11th grade students do have to take it for the state accountability measure but it's not they don't have to retake it if they don't get those qualifying scores thank you other additional questions katie um couple first of all i'm a parent of an eighth grader so all this is like oh my goodness but i know you'll take care of us but it is a lot to decide what my child's going to be tomorrow um with i love the career pathways um i'm assuming the answer is yes but do these um different like connectors and principal levels account toward the core 40 for other things yes they do they do so they would count if i can go back to the whoops one too far yeah they would count in the directed electives because career and technical education counts and direct electives they would also count in just the overall electives so they could count for either one of those categories so yes they will count toward their overall required credits for their diploma yes and what about like the um medical stuff would that count towards science at all the that one the it depends which one you're talking about so the biomedical sciences that does count toward their science credit the certified nursing assistant and the emergency medical technician do not count as science credits but the the biomedical sciences one does count for science credits and then my last question is can you do more than one of these absolutely so in order to meet the requirement for the graduation pathways you have to complete all three courses of one of them but you could also do um another course or two in a different one of the pathways if you wanted to explore further or again as i said if you take that first principles course and then realize gosh i'm not sure this is the pathway i want to stay on you could certainly change and try another pathway absolutely okay good that's i was just curious with that well personal example so my own daughter is interested in going to med school so she wants to do the emt course but then i noticed on here you have to be 17 by may 1st and she's a very young person so she wouldn't be able to do that till senior year but then you have the one the biomedical sciences and technology which is really cool too so i think it's just like and i love it that and i'm sure it is that these parents will be presented with all this information yes of like talking with their children and stuff and i like that you can change because yes heaven knows what i wanted to be in ninth grade so thank you thank you other questions yes couple questions so do we coach the kids to consider a pathway or like when we have our schedule selection do we actually pull those up and say let's figure out what's for you or do we expect the kids to come to us with that so there's i i think we do a lot of diff a couple of different things one we did through naviance with our ninth and tenth graders we actually gave them a short uh questionnaire that asked them which of it was a drop-down menu but they could select as many as they wanted which of these did they think they might be interested in just to give us a little bit of kind of that foundation of you know if if your daughter's interested in possibly the medical field then we we don't want to talk through the options in culinary arts necessarily if that's something she's definitely not interested in at this point so just to give us a little foundation so we did that with our current ninth and tenth graders already and we're going to be doing that with our eighth graders as well um and then as part of those conversations then that kind of leads us to be able to say you know have you taken a look at this all the counselors have that same document of all of the different pathways and concentrators so and then at our academic transition night which is for our parents of our current eighth graders we will talk about this we talk about this there as well and what that looks like and having having a lot more detail again as we've gotten this all aligned just within the last year and getting those principles and concentrator in a and b i think it's a lot easier now to visually show it and explain what that looks like than it was even two or three years ago so we'll be able to get a lot of that information out but so we do a little bit of both we want the students to give us a little bit of an idea what they are interested in or what they think they might be interested in as a jumping off point but then we also want to say have you looked at all the different options that we have have you consider all these do you are you familiar with all the different things that we have to offer okay thank you and then how often do we reach out to colleges about building new pathways looking at where we're going in industry and how we can prepare students for that how often do we do that um i would say that we are in we have several direct partnerships we have a partnership with indiana university with the advanced college project for dual credit and with ivy tech and so we're in frequent communication with those two universities in particular because we're already offering dual credit through them as far as reaching out beyond that to specific universities i don't know that we're doing that just more feedback that we get from them yeah and i would say we're not um just partnering with the universities but when we go through our program evaluation we also work with our businesses our community for example when we looked at reinventing our stem offerings at the middle school in that program evaluation committee we brought in business partners from the outside and really looked at what does the um you know the future hold for our students what types of careers might they have and what types of experiences might they need in middle school and then also as in high school as well okay yeah that's really great that's great um and then just looking at how sometimes our colleges they evolve with their requirements for classes and um what they'll count and so i just wondered how our schools stay aligned with that those changes i don't know in in like for example the requirements um for the acp those are direct indiana university credits however the ap what students can earn um as far as credits at the different universities that's up to the different universities and that may and that also may be up to the different colleges within the university like at purdue you may be able to earn it in one college but you may you may not be able to earn those credits in another and so that's all individual for the different universities and colleges that what they'll accept awesome love the pathways thank you i have an additional question uh well a few um i thought we had 38 different pathways is that correct because it i didn't see 38 on here that was under perkins four okay since perkins four we've also had perkins five and now we are on the next level program of studies the next despite the fact that we have not yet officially graduated students under one of these the full class under this that the requirements have changed three times on us okay so perkins four that is already done okay that was where they had to just take two different courses in a sequence yes and that those students we've already moved on from that perkins five we do have a few seniors that could still graduate under using the perkins five which again was two different courses they had to have a minimum of um i think they had six credits in a particular area okay so now they've realigned everything again to the next level program of studies and so in doing that with the three courses in sequence it has changed a little bit what those offerings look okay so what you showed us those are what our cl our offerings are right now at the high school that is correct okay those are what we have right now at the high school and i do think there are a few more that exist and we are continuing to look at opportunities to add additional ones i will mention we have there is a hamilton county career center association that we are part of and we're starting to have some conversations and one of the things with that is would there be through that program maybe some additional pathways that we could explore for students using all of the resources of all of our hamilton county schools so too early yet we're just in preliminary discussions with that but that might be something so we will continue to look at some of the other existing pathways that we don't currently have and say are there any others that we can find ways to add those in because as many of them as we can offer we definitely want to okay when you were discussing the biology course you had said that there is a project-based learning opportunity within that biology course are you discuss was this specifically freshman biology so everybody will have this covered regardless correct that's that's the goal is that yeah so both freshman biology and honors biology okay they have one unit within that course that is a project-based learning unit so that will touch every freshman that will take care of every freshman and then we also did one in health because again that's another course that is required for graduation that students take so even if we get a student that moves in after their freshman year and maybe they haven't completed that in their biology course at whatever school they came from they would have another course potentially um that they could meet that requirement and then if they've already let's say completed biology and health then that's where we could look at some of the other options in service based learning or work based learning for them to do that but yes the vast majority of our students will complete that requirement right away their freshman year so for the service based learning kids who are in key club which the focus is service correct so that qualifies as long as they have documentation on how many hours that's correct okay that is correct well thank you any additional questions i know i could go on okay valerie thank you very much dr dudley i appreciate all that you've brought to us this evening next on the agenda we have our monthly financial report mr mcmichael there we go okay so uh this takes us through october and um as you can see um in for 2020 in our education and i'm sorry i think i've got the wrong i want to get 21 first there we go for 21 takes us through october and and you'll see as anticipated that our cash balance continues to decline it's one just under 1.7 million dollars which is about what we would expect it to be at this time of year the next time you see the report because we will have collected a property tax which is coming in this case from for our uh referendum and the rainy day fund i'm sorry referendum not the rainy day fund that will bring that balance back up and so it will be considerably higher than this um by the end of the year as you look at that compared to 2020 you can see that same thing happens every year and so then with regard to our operations fund where this fund is is supported uh with local uh primarily property tax but local revenue and as you can see our expenditures are rather uh consistent month to month but we don't really receive revenue except primarily twice a year and so the same thing's happened here to the point that um that by the end of october the uh the balance is actually in a negative uh which again is is typical you see the same thing last year in 2020 and and then our rainy day fund currently has a slight negative balance we'll bring that back up you might remember at the last meeting i believe you approved a one and a half million dollar transfer from from the operations fund to the rainy day fund and so that that will build that balance back up we depleted this fund primarily when we gave the stipend for what we call the covet stipend uh earlier in the year and but this fund will be um we'll be in the black by the time we get to the end of the year so with that i'd respond to any questions that you have thank you mr mcmichael any comments or questions with regards to the financial report this evening mr mcmichael thank you very much for your time thank you next we jump to board member report and the first would be a legislative update and i don't have an update to share so we'll just move right along louise small parks yes for parks just a couple updates one is the communications director who also helps with diversity equity accessibility and inclusion shared with us an update to their site where they have deployed or actually implemented a new widget that helps people who may have a disability have easier access to services and so i just want to promote that if you leverage the monon center or any of these supportive services that carmel parks and recreation provides you might have more ease of use for the website and then another thing that i was really excited about was my son came home and said that he wanted to go to bear creek that is a new park that we are in the process of hosting focus groups for and getting input from the community and so i was excited that he came home and told me about it so it turns out that the carmel parks recreation team went to the middle school to do a presentation to the children to tell them kind of how we go about renovating or creating new parks for our city and so the students were really engaged really excited especially for my son to walk in the door and be like can you take me like bear creek i'm like son i had a whole day of work no not going to do that today but maybe in the future so it was a really impactful presentation so i'm just excited when organizations in the community can come in and really spark a light in our children and so um i saw that so just wanted to share that thank you louise well dr bearsford what a great what a great night um you know when you look through our agenda for tonight we start out with our artists and uh and some amazing artwork there i actually have student art that uh is sent to me uh regularly that i put in frames in my office and uh i got a new batch just this week too so uh and then we went from there to athletics with our state championship six pete and uh and then we go to our teachers with earning those grant awards and then we look at some of the exciting things on the horizon as we get our capital projects completed and to think about the the big swings that are going around the district to you know to update our facilities and that the tax rate won't go up and that these will be paid off in eight years it's just mind-boggling and and of course you know that final report with career pathways and you remember when the deca marketing students did their marketing of what's our new brand going to be and what's our tagline uh one of the top three taglines was find your future karma play schools find your future and we were doing that and uh and um you know if you were at expedition the last round they showed a video of different kids saying uh what their you know college and career pathway is going to be and that they're ready for that so just pretty inspiring uh you know night which leads me to my bell ringer which is um thanksgiving and uh you know tomorrow will be our last uh full day of instruction uh before we take thanksgiving break and i gotta tell you i've got an attitude of gratitude um from our uh our students and uh meeting with their and their teachers meeting in that space where the point of contact is and the magic happens and and then all the support services from there all the way up to this board uh you know everybody does what they can to make our kids have a you know a special education our schools are a special place to learn and grow and i am just grateful to be part of this team and and as you can see from even just tonight's meeting that team works very very hard to make that happen and so i appreciate your dedication and leadership and uh and support and and my team here on the left and all the other players we have around the room and i just have an attitude of gratitude and i'm thankful for carmel clay schools and i'm wishing everybody a wonderful break and that everybody just takes a minute to count their blessings and enjoy that that time to be thankful and with that the bell ringer is over well thank you very much dr beresford and and the board does would like to echo the attitude of gratitude and we'd also like to wish everyone a very safe and happy thanksgiving to you and your family and friends um we do have a couple upcoming meetings there's only one left for this academic year very excited that our next meeting is going to be december 13th that is a regular session for the school board this meeting will be held in public and that will be at clay middle school so i just like to remind the board that'll be over resuming public meetings and that'll be at clay middle school and with that may i get a motion to adjourn our meeting second everybody yes all those in favor aye meeting adjourned

take down yeah so i i have been working very closely with dion and scott sherry from skillman reviewing the process as we've gone through there are challenges with that one of the advantages and one of the reasons why we did not break up our bond sale into two different sales and went with one was so that we could have that money readily available right now to go ahead and place those orders and have those orders here the other part is because the site where we are building taf is such that we have additional space that's not being utilized with the building construction right now we're able to take delivery of those items as we order them which is one of the the big advantages to what we're doing as we move forward with it so according to dion he feels like the the ordering will be such that we'll be able to get it in as we need it or have it already there as we're ready to move forward with it they've taken a great approach to not just doing the concrete work first and then the structural but doing it as they go at the same time and i think it's really going to be advantageous for us as far as meeting our deadlines so all that to say i feel like we're going to be in a good spot even with the challenges we're facing okay thank you any questions or comments if not all those in favor signify by saying guy all right hi opposed emotion carries 4-0 uh all right thank you mr reese and then now information items this evening we have superintendent discussion groups usually brian smith gives us an update out of cedar lake but without him being there uh mr hoffman anything from winfield or point ground point business pretty much as usual continuing to issue beside grants and some of them are becoming quite visible around the square of town so continuing to do favorite projects hi um doctor did did we mention it last meeting did we notice some of the uh athletes uh up around the square on banners was that a did anybody else notice that and that was something that it had been discussed the city to team up with them i don't know how that was funded or provided but it's something that um mr smith and i were having comments with uh you know the city at some point about trying to team up and get that you know get that opportunity out there so it was nice to see um i also noticed an article in the paper that hopefully that 109th is going to be opening up soon december 15th all you guys from went through the coming down that day right the i-65 exit alone for myself yeah same from in town um nothing else mr hoffman all right thank you um see what our see what our lineup is this evening like say it all in the right order we have director of elementary education mr ramirez thank you mr president and board members i'm going to keep my comments very brief as mr g infermi has um some cphs renovation overviews to share which will be enthralling so um and i want to upstage him i would like to thank anna rutzlaff our ell district specialist for organizing and hosting our first k5 ell by literacy night in partnership with the public library that occurred last week and was a great opportunity for our families to not only gather at the public library but to take a trip around the world um in a literacy uh format so i appreciate her efforts and the team's efforts from our ell members i'd also like to thank the philanthropy that occurs in our buildings at the elementary level i am just astounded by the work that these young students are doing to demonstrate their generosity and citizenship as you see us going into the thanksgiving and holiday season our schools are really abounding with opportunities for food drives clothing drives and angel trees and i just believe that this is a true reflection of our youngest citizens who will become productive members down the road and the importance of what we are helping them see as their role in helping those who are in need so thank you very much thank you mr ramirez and uh director of secondary education mr g fermi thank you mr president board members um tonight dr terrell has asked me to share with you and if mr gill could bring up our a powerpoint that will kind of show you exactly what you've just kind of approved money wise for the expansion at uh crown point high school that we need time out okay i gotta get up so this will be a little bit unusual just so you know we'll be sharing this tomorrow morning with the teachers and staff members at the high school as well you're there okay i'm gonna go back all right so we know um expansion happens and you can see our old high school from where we first started apartments and then the old high school where colonel wheeler stands and then you know our current high school which is approaching 20 years 20 years is coming up real close but we are now moving towards where we have to expand to house 3600 students so as we sat down and started talking to gibraltar and skillman and we started talking with our administrators and of course you as the board we had a criteria when we worked with our designers and and there it is up there for everybody to see we have to move to be able to house up to 3 600 students this is adding new classrooms some of those classrooms being science labs have to expand our cafeteria because you can only have so many lunches per per day so we might make sure we have enough room in there for our kids i want to add to our robotics area which is our stem area of engineering science technology and mathematics and take those programs into kind of some new heights as we move forward with that lockers and commons areas and circulation because a lot of the congestion i spent 10 years of my administrative career at that high school and loved it but it was very very crowded back then and it's even more crowded now so that wasn't taken into consideration uh to repurpose our career and technical education program spaces as we start to expand those because the graduation pathways that students will be taking redesign our administrative and guidance offices so that we can kind of change the operation of communication as that works repurpose and under utilize courtyard space and you'll see what we're going to do with that and then to take the opportunity to increase our life fitness athletic and training and pe program so to see what all that 43 million dollars starts hitting us just in the building here if you look at this overview of the building anything that is kind of in yellowish orange that's going to be repurposed spaces that we already have anything in red will be an addition that we'll be putting towards our our building so let's just start with where our our classroom additions will be this is directly across from where our tennis courts are right now um arrows pointing right down where you see um this is where we're going to have an addition of 18 classrooms on the on the first floor and then another 10 some of them being science labs up on the top floor second floor let's just look at the first floor first you see we can add a lot of classrooms and this is all done with gibraltar design um where you start kind of projecting how many sections you'll need in math and science and language arts and so that's where you come up with the number of classrooms you need but this is a pretty big expansion that we'll be putting in you can see just a little interesting piece there directly across from the tennis courts we're gonna have a walk that will go into some exterior entrance um bathrooms so that we've always had an issue where we're having a tennis match um people have to go into the buildings and it creates a security issue this way we'll be able to do that with no problems above these new addition these classrooms you can see that we have to kind of repurpose our facts department that commons locker area right now that's where you enter and that side of the building south end of the building so once that gets taken back down we have to rebuild our facts lab where we have our early childhood lab on to the right of that side and then on the end of it we have a world language lab room right now that will get repurposed to a fax room and you'll have a new entrance that you can come in through that hallway there so trying to kind of uh answer all the questions that we have here also in our auto area there we're going to repurpose the classroom and some storage there so that that will be a better space for the kids when they're not actually in the lab if you kind of look stay on the first floor i'm going to start in the e-wing that's towards the top of this picture really the biggest repurposing piece in the e-wing is that corner rumor says 3d art right now that's a science lab and we're going to create that into a art room because we're going to move all our science department will be upstairs after this renovation is done the other pieces will not really be renovated we thought about that a little bit but the graphics lab and the 3d art room will stay the same you move down towards the where it says the media center we are going to be building some additional classrooms to the north of the media center right now there's one exceptional um education classroom that we're going to add another one because we're going to move one of those and it's kind of one of our continuum rooms where you need some some self-contained areas and then to the south of that we'll have another exceptional learner's classroom repurposed and then our tv studio will move to that south end of the media center media center will be repurposed got some pictures of what that will look like now across the hall from that we're going to put in a project lead the way lab which is really robotics and engineering there'll be computer labs on each side of that and then across that narrow hallway we're going to repurpose a room that we currently have into another cte or career and technical education kind of lab that we can grow into as our programs continue to grow so from the outside when you're looking if you're looking across from the tennis courts this is what the elevation will look like there's the existing view right now in the in the right hand corner and this is kind of what that hallway to the media center on the east side this is the new main entrance to the media center and what it's going to look like and it's going to be wider right now it's a very narrow hall very difficult to get through we're going to widen that up and it'll be a place where you can enter there and then right across from it you'll have your project lead the way lab is the interior of the media center the circulation desk will move from where it currently is and this is if you were looking east you'll have what they call those storefront window walls where you can kind of see and make it kind of open feeling this one kind of shows you the media center at the on the top picture we're still going to have those windows up up high so when you cross there will be a hallway and i'll show you that later when we talk about the second floor you can cross there you can still look down into the media center we'll stop natural lighting going into our media center which was something we asked the designers to keep this is a view of the project lead the way lab so across from the media center again all glass wall that you can look right in there so you can see there's kind of a depiction of what might be a little robotics tournament uh arena area you could have it right in there they can also create a lot of the robotic things that they're doing and then there's the rest the picture of what the lab looks it's pretty pretty substantial so you can have a lot of things happening all right if we move to the north side of the building for the performing arts what we really needed there is we needed some storage space um currently we have a trailer that kind of sticks out from that area nice looking trailer has you know theater piece on it but it's a trailer nonetheless so what is currently our black box where we do a lot of rehearsal and practice back there and mr duggan hart's classes back there as well that will become storage it has a very high ceiling over 15 feet high so we can create a lot of storage back there for him then we will repurpose his classroom and the rehearsal classroom with a couple more storage areas that will be across from where the orchestra room is right now so and it will be flush with the building so when you look at it it will look kind of like it was always there but it will create a lot of that storage that our performing arts area has needed for a long while if we move over into the pe athletic training area you can see that this part we are going to add some kind of fitness areas where we'll have an additional piece of like almost an extension of a field house if you will and then we'll move our weight lifting area there for athletics and our weight development classes which are are packed and cannot fit in but it's now currently the fitness center anymore there's not enough room there we'll repurpose where the weight lifting was into a fitness center which will have mostly cardio um equipment in there and then there'll also be additional health classroom that will be put in there there will be south of the pool we'll be able to put in a locker room you'll have an additional weight room which is much larger and will accommodate way more students and athletes and then we'll also be able to put this indoor turf field to the next of it which is kind of an expansion of our field house this is kind of the view if you look at the bottom that's the view of like when you're leaving the stadium this is what people would be walking past again taking into consideration that we don't want something that looks like it was flapped on there we want it to flow with the rest of the building and that will look really nice and it'll look like it was always there um this is another view of it from the parking lot um this is kind of the interior view so you can just kind of get a feel of what that the field turf would be next to all the weightlifting equipment and there's a barrier that comes down when they need to separate the two areas okay and then we move into the courtyard we all know that the courtyard is a big piece yes michelle pretty it's pretty high yeah yeah kind of like the field house very similar to that um so in the courtyard this was a place that you know at first it's really kind of tricky we were worried about trying to get in there to build but uh skillman has come up with a lot of really great ways to do this and cost effective um because it's a space that's not utilized enough so in that area if the the way you kind of look at this and you got to kind of imagine how you all been in the building enough right where it says cafeteria expansion to the right of that is the elevator and that is one one thing you really don't want to change around much i guess i learned from the um the designers as an elevator that's very costly so we kind of took it all the way up to there and where it says cafeteria expansion is really where your administrative offices are right now in the nurse's office so the red is building into the courtyard so with the existing part there which will be the counselors and admins offices along with social workers and conference rooms and career conference rooms that we have and the clinic the red part will be which is currently into the courtyard and we'll add a large group instruction room there as well as as we expand we need more large areas and as you know a lot of we have a lot of classes that meet in our large group extra construction rooms now uh kind of like advanced bio and things like that where you almost have kind of that college lecture feel to it so this will be a highly utilized area but it allows our counselors and our administrators to kind of physically do what they're trying to do right now is they're trying to work around teams around alphabet of students so you have a couple counselors an administrator an interventionist they all can be in one area and we work with those same students for four years and they'll have the same people that they're working the cafeteria expansion was very tricky because we have to have an area that is larger you want to be able to see it all so here's kind of a picture of when those administrative offices are moved you can see where you're going to be able to see right through that hallway there there's another look in there and it'll be a large hallway that kids can get back and forth from it kind of shows you how the stairs will look there um the south end of the cafeteria which was we always refer to as the new part of the cafeteria even though it's 13 years old or whatever that south end will now be a satellite kit kitchen where students will also be able to pick up their lunch so that will help the flow because anyone that's ever been there that at lunch time all the kids are crammed to one side on the north side trying to get their lunch and kids are trying to get across the high school hallways there and it's very congested so with this opening of the middle of it with the satellite kitchen to the south the the traffic flow should be much better for the students they're moving across there so then if we move up to the upstairs uh views you can see that the second floor again uh the middle of our expansion that of classroom expansion is all science rooms in the middle we're able to get all of our science programs upstairs now so together as a department over on the upper left side there we have two more science rooms plus a cnn lab that we're going to dna lab that we are going to try to develop that program medical program that we already have some of our things you know biology program so in that expansion between that lab and where it kind of has the acts there is where this hallway which never existed upstairs before will give us a third hallway in which students can get a flow across the building and there's those windows that will look down into the media center so we're hoping that this will help yes as well so with all that being said that's that's the start this starts december 17th so we thought we want to show people kind of what we landed we'll be at the high school tomorrow make sure the faculty knows coming we've worked with the faculty with the department chairs with the teachers with the administration countless meetings with them back and forth and then a lot of communication with the designers to try to get them everything they want to get but um december 17th it starts so that's what we're we got any question i tried to do that as fast as i could guys i know it's been a long when are they painting to finish 2024.

so thank you very much thank you mr hartman chief human resource officer mr akiwa thank you mr warney and members of the board just one quick item we're starting to enter foul weather season if you will right now and with our employees and all of our staff members and i guess for families as well we just like to encourage everybody to make sure your rds contact information is up to date so that if we need to get ahold of you with any emergency information we've got accurate info and rds we're also encouraging all of our employees to take your time leave earlier um as we say as the conditions change outside walk like a penguin uh which is really when moving from place to place you want to make sure that you're not in a hurry you're not rushed you're not carrying too many things and you're slowing down your pace and i think something else that goes along with that is more folks become car riders and fewer folks become walkers just reminding everybody to practice patience as we enter into the season where everything just slows down a little bit thank you very much hi thank you mr kiwa uh business department mr reese i have no report this evening thank you thank you and uh director of communications ms allen thank you good evening i would like to extend a thank you to those of you that could attend the groundbreaking ceremony at taft it was cold but i think the students had fun in particular i want to thank dion and will from skillman who went above and beyond and making sure that we had supplies that we needed and setting up the site which included pouring a gravel path that morning so no one had to walk in any mud another update as we prepare for kindergarten pre-registration we are going to make the we are cp newsletter that went out over the summer a twice a year publication so we'll have a summer version and now we'll also have a winter version that will announce kindergarten pre-registration and arrive hopefully in early february thank you superintendent of schools dr terrell so coming into thanksgiving i'd be remiss if i didn't have a list of thank yous it's been a tough year tough 18 months coming up on 24 months quickly here i want to thank our teachers and support staff and administrators for their work with our students thank our students for your ability to continually adjust want to thank our parents for their support of their children and understand that each and every parent only wants what's best for our kids and we appreciate that and then thank you to our board for your continued support and leadership here within our district as we continue to move forward in spite of the challenges that we face as a community and as a society over the last year or more thank you thank you dr terrell um other business of the border school trustees uh anybody have any other business to discuss or just open discussion for a few minutes before we move on i would just like to say obviously the four of us and brian included um we all have different opinions on things we all have different thoughts beliefs but we make it work as a board and a lot of people out there don't realize that obviously this is our only job based on what you do today so um we are elected by you taxpayers and you residents so we do take that to heart and once again i've said this in many meetings here in the past we have what's best for your kids at heart and that's what our goal is when you take this oath of office is to make sure you're providing the best education possible in a safe environment and that includes looking after your taxpayer dollars it includes taking care of employees and making sure all that's done and when you're meeting once a month and i can tell you that hasn't happened since covet hit um there's plenty of conversations plenty of emails to read and additional things that have been required and only one of us dislikes it and it's it's a task and especially you know whatever obviously is said over and over again no one ever anticipated anything like this i can tell you that when i got on the board 16 years ago and we are doing even though may not seem to some of you we are doing the best of our ability making it work with our administrative team and dr darrell and i just passed one thanks again to them because that obviously adds extra burden to them besides the regular daily jobs that they have to do and you know uh actual description of a regular job and add that additional work based on the covid and how it's impacted them kudos to them for going up and beyond and making it work for your children everybody involved school corporation and that includes the teachers union i saw you there thank you next no i just kind of add to that scott that you know it it doesn't stop right so we made a change tonight that's going to invoke a different group of people that are going to have concerns and complaints so it's just going to shift but my point of bringing that up is we're always trying to do what's best for the kids and that's something that mr angel says all the time and if you keep that uh first and and forefront of your mind it's you just you act on that alone it makes it pretty pretty simple so uh that being said we're always i feel like this group always is looking to do things better uh there was a gentleman here with the cool coat i forgot your name the snazzy jacket there brought up a good idea for you know process improvement um you know we are in a bind with where we put the comment period because certainly if we would have moved the consent agenda up in front of the comment period that would have been a disaster um but i want to remind people publicly that it was probably i'm taking a stab at the time frame but it's probably been a year but it's definitely been this elected board that changed the policy to allow people to speak about items that were not on the agenda it was on my list of things to mention as well all right the wording used to be you could comment on agenda items only and it got changed to educational issues brought in the opportunity for public comment exactly so it was there would have been you know two years ago or a year and a half ago there wouldn't have been any opportunity for people to speak about their mask opinion one way one way or the other um or for people to give uh personal accounts of of things that that may have happened to them so um that being said i think i i appreciate the i appreciate the you know the input uh because i i feel that you were definitely trying to you know genuine in your concern and trying to help make things better so i do appreciate that um that's it i think we yep that's it mr hoffman i have a few things you want me to go first you have anything i just want to wish everybody oh man is that this one um for for the other business topic um dr terrell i think that'd be in all of our best interests to get on track with a board retreat against here i think mr hoffman and i spoke about that um maybe tagging a date in february possibly march uh guys any any thoughts um i think the retreat in my opinion um and this is just like a throwing out some conversation right here while we can while we're all together uh in my opinion i i think we've done it in the past where we've come in and sat down and we've had presentation after presentation after presentation um that there's appropriate time for that and maybe some categories that will be what you know maybe we can lit maybe we should we can submit a list of things that we find as a priority that we need to talk about and then dr terrell you could put together the people to present if necessary um but i would view this as a you know a lengthy three or four hour session that um we have a lot of new roles in our cabinet ms pasquez ramirez gian fermi um miss allen that not so much a presentation sure if there's something of importance that they'd like to bring to us but we don't get much of an opportunity to have a conversation you know hey so that was really neat what you did with this how about that or how about this and if that's not that's not right i get it and i whatever anyone could explain to me that that's not the proper way to do it but we've never done it that way before so i think it'd be kind of interesting to just give that a try i mean you talk about three to four hours i know i we could talk to mrs pasquez for three hours alone right i mean so as long as we turn up the heat but uh um mr hoffman you mentioned something uh the other day you and i were talking about um you know potentially honoring um you know but that could be a topic that you know that so um i think all these things that we in passing kind of hey this might be a neat idea or this school corporation down south is doing that i i would like to just maybe ask you guys to submit um a list myself included to dr terrell of things that are of importance a little bit of demographer talk we don't need a professional demographer in here to do it but we could just talk with what we see with our eyes you know hey this this area is blowing up what are we gonna do about the school or you know cafeteria sizes and schools that are getting touched on that we didn't didn't speak of i had a couple of things uh oh important um i think we need to ask mr reese to sit down at this retreat and dedicate a good amount of time to the long term budget we've been spending a lot of money and we we have that um that the funding and the financing and the bonds to be able to do this but i think that's part of the retreat that would be very important um so i think that's it for that uh some reason this will go on and just to clarify for the people that are in the room and anybody that might be watching our our retreat that we call it takes place in this building it's not a correct we do not it's not a vacation destination there's no tax payer hot dogs and four old four four hours old coffee or not hot dogs uh donuts yeah exactly not the data to be talking about a retreat but i just want to clarify that i uh this may be more of a concern of uh board statements appreciation later but so either mr aquila or she infirming anybody the daughters are in the back of the car the other day and there's this three words something another that the unfortunate circumstances of an intruder in our buildings uh there's a new phrase that they're taught and um anybody know that after their tongue no well my point of bringing it up was i'm driving and they're in the back seat like just keep repeating this and the light bulb went off on my head that there must have been some training take place in the elementary school in case there were potentially an intruder it's sad to discuss it but i want to say thank you that i mean what whoever was in charge of showing them that that week or that day uh um it really stuck and it was catchy and anyone anyone in the elementary know would know what i'm talking about but uh it's you know one of those things it's sad sad that we have to have the practice take place but at the same time because we do we're fortunate that it's being done in a way that the children are reactive to it and you know listening um my last comment on the just circling back and not to beat a dead horse but as we move to approve uh the recommendation on the covid policy um you know i feel like i've sat here as a board member for five months and many times probably people don't know what i'm thinking you know which way is healing in tonight or where's he going with this and um i somewhat still feel that way but that's why i wanted to hit on that two percent trigger because i think it's really important that when you look at a school right now that might be at you know 10 students that are positive and at a number of 14 or 15 they're going to be required to wear masks so if you are on the fence about what the right thing is to do whether we should be in mass or not if we continue to live in this world where there's only four students out of 400 in a school that are positive that's a pretty darn good thing so let's just keep rooting for that you know let's just i mean two percent so i i feel like it's a really you know it's it's numbers we've heard around the state you didn't just pull this out of a hat you know um but it gave me a piece of mind to approve the recommendation and not just do it like wavering but with some confidence that well if things go bad we're going to be triggered out of this pretty darn quick and it also gave me a piece of mind mr hoffman and i did speak about the when to start it whether we should be you know next week december 6th end of the semester and it that also kind of gave me the peace of mind to go with the december 6th date because you know what by by the following week the 13th we're going to be in school for one more week and if the numbers if the numbers jump we're gonna get some data um and we're gonna we're gonna know how to how to how to handle things pretty quickly and if you know god forbid things are bad and miss kobit continues to spread aggressively well then we're just gonna be back in mass again and everyone could have their arguments and debate with one another whether or not effective and it will be out of our hands we set our trigger point and we could have a good peace of mind about about that um the uh the other topic tonight that uh dr charles is going to ask you to think about and inform us at a later time when there is some further information shared or gathered or whatever about uh resignations and the process if you'd like to include one of us please let me know and i'll find somebody to be there for you whether it be me or someone else who wants to do it um if we are if we're not to be included then we're not to be included but if you'd like us to be we'll certainly make sure somebody's available for you thank you um okay that's it for me anybody else on uh other business how about board statements of appreciation and recognition my vote notwithstanding i i do want to recognize the administration for their efforts in putting together the recommendation regarding the mass policy it's it's not very often that i go against the recommendation of the administration uh this is the first time since dr carroll has been here and uh only a handful of times under the previous administration thereby not going along with the majority so i i do appreciate the work that went into making that recommendation i do appreciate the continuing effort to monitor the situation and and overall give this administration extremely harmonized high marks towards kobe policies and monitoring thank you mr often mr angel in these statements appreciation other than mr hoffman's sentiments and happy thanksgiving to everybody and hopefully they have a wonderful and blessed holiday and i said i want to recognize the continuous training of safety training our schools and uh gosh we talk about sports a lot at this board um with the uh you know the performance that we continue to have in in crown point athletics and we try to acknowledge as much as we can also the
