Um, our idea was, you know, cuz the the land and water conservation fund, that one can do up to 50% of the grant. So, if the grant is for 1.4 million or if if the total cost is 1.4, land and water would do 700,000. So, we have to come up with the remaining 700,000. And so, one idea was let's do a brick fundraiser where we can sell people's engraved names, we can do a pathway, whatever. We can choose some options of where we do the pathway or we can do tiles, um, and some of these we've talked about the social trail. It has been brought up on the social trail. We can do the performing arts A. And just kind of create again that sense of community. Um, Like what we talked about from the library trail. Exactly. Yeah, I mean we got Who was it that did that?
We would be charging them tuition to attend our schools and ASDB would come to um provide services here. So we've never been a tuition collecting entity before. Um so we're exploring what all that means. we've already ascertained, are there any other kinds of services the kids need to see if we're um able to provide those and it appears that we are. So, we're still working on that and we have um kind of a preliminary contract floating out and we're still gathering a little bit more information from ASDB, but that would be two classes also at HMS that are vacant, two vacant classrooms there. So, ASDB would not be paying for space from us, but we would be collecting tuition um significant tuition on the kids that would come to us. So, we're still working on that one. And we are in the middle of wrapping up the year as you know and in the middle of planning for next year.
So, I 100% got to give that, you know, that that that that you you know, mark to our coaches. I just I want to um I would definitely agree with Dr. Martin. My daughter participates on a co-op team as well, and I was pleasantly surprised to hear collectively during a team meeting that the girls without hesitation wanted to remain as a co-op, and then just talking to my daughter individually, um what a culture and community that's been built because additionally she didn't necessarily take stock in um winning a state series, but instead just the relationships that's been built. My question though, in terms of state series versus, and perhaps I just don't understand it well enough, when you say state series they wouldn't they couldn't win collectively, but there are individual meets where they would be able to win as a team. Is that correct or no?
Whereas J Desai has earned the respect of the entire school community for his high standards and expectations. Whereas the highest level of distinction given by the Avon community school corporation is a commendation from the board of school trustees. Therefore, let it be resolved that Jay Desai is hereby commended for his sex success and achievements. Board members, I will entertain a motion. I move that the board of school trustees approve the accommodation for Jay Desai as presented. >> Second motion by Mike, seconded by Jennifer.
flights could go nuts in in that amount of time. So I guess they just eat the >> because they've already given you a price. So there's no chance there's no chance of it. Well, what they give you is >> there's no chance of it like, oh yeah, we're it's going to go up. >> No. Yeah, it is what it is. What you see is what you get. >> Cool. >> It is cool. >> So now when our students are on the taking the actual tours and all those kind of things, how many other students from other schools are with them? >> Quite a few. Um like for example when we went to Italy did you know that Fountain Central was with us? They had 20 what? No 14. So we were coincidentally partnered with them while we were there. When we were in BISE we were partnered with another small school from Tennessee.
56.8%. That's fairly consistent. It's not showing significant growth, all right, but it's certainly not showing any kind of drastic decline. Take the same group of kids, they'd be fifth graders in 2023. Now it's 45.8, so we are seeing a drop. And we see that pattern in each of those classes through the years. When you follow the same group of kids from year to year, we're not seeing a drop from third to fourth, which is where the transition is between the buildings, but we are seeing a drop from fourth to fifth in ELA. So, just as in summary, you know, they score above the state average. We don't see a drop from third to fourth grade, which is what is typical for transition years according to research. Not for us, apparently. But from fourth to fifth grade, we're noticing a decline. We see it in ELA.
We are looking to change the name. Um and then it'll be something to do with instruction. And then we're going to ask the team before the end of the year, do you want to stay on this team? Cuz you know, we've done some pretty amazing things. We've had some some some great accolades from Dr. Cavazos. Um and then also reaching out to other people. Do you Do you want to join this team now? Cuz they're seeing what we're doing and so there are other people that want to join the team. And what the idea is bringing people on board and having more more leaders, more masters teachers learning what what we're doing with explicit instruction and um get it across the building. So, you're not limited to 12. >> Nope. Nope. You have uh bite-size pieces. How many times do I say this all the time?
So in that first piece, it's making sure and you know, in our strategic plan we talk about honoring the MDC. So we'll have a finite number of teachers who are piloting, but it's really important to have the voice of all the people who are involved, who will be implementing the selected program. So that's where that survey piece really comes in. It's not just the program pilot teachers rather who are participating in that survey, it's all teachers. So to have that voice, to have that piece um is is certainly an integral part of it. Once a decision has been made about a program to move forward, it is really important that we support our teachers before they launch to students, right? And so um in the spring of 2028, I know it sounds like it's a long time away, but it will not be that far.
Um and just that doesn't help the life of that stuff, so um just so you're aware, you know, we're going to be getting some signage and getting those posted on these facilities. I'll be devil's advocate. Sure. If somebody's got has their animals on the turf, what can we do? Well, I mean like I mean, there's nothing we can do if we're not there policing it all the time. I mean, if if we're there, we can just say, "Ah." Like we also have people like that riding bikes. I mean, I I I personally believe our turf takes a lot of um abuse in after hours, and um our camera on that side doesn't extend all the way. Um you know, you got nothing there but possibly getting the camera somewhere else that would just give us a better view. But you know, we've had some vandalism issues early on when we got that um equipment that you know, the police were having to help us try to address as best they could, but I don't disagree, Darla.
He just wants it up to his property. So, you're looking at the price 60% of that road, but that's even 7,500 bucks if we go off of their estimates on what we want to sell it for. Um our last conversation was just if he um you know, if we were in the price range that he was able to buy that road at and just having a an agreement written out on what that was going to look like for easement when he had Ultimately, you know, we want him to build whatever he wants over there for housing and those sorts of things, but What about road improvement? Like if he wanted to improve that That would be something that we would probably write in the agreement on what that would look like. >> like it needs a little bit of improvement as far as kind of going in.
Foothills Canyon. Yeah, Foothills Canyon. So, it's a similar idea. And this is kind of like we thought maybe by going to the track by the concession stand we could really find a way to let people or a brick path. So, if people are walking they can see names. Um the other option was was the area outside of the district office. So, we I feel like it's doable, um but we would need to give the business school funds, I'm sure. Um Is this a little video at all? I don't know. I personally love things like that where you just see the community wanting to help and help them out. And I feel like if the community If the community was a part of it, it would make sense to open it up to the community. So, that's kind of our item of discussion. Is that something you guys would be open to?
So, I wanted to provide to you and also Cheyenne provided to you this list um that you have and I encourage you to take that home with you. Um some of the dates overlap. We have coffee with the superintendent at Heritage this week. We have on April 22, the education foundation is providing lunch for all staff at every location. So like facilities, transpo, all the schools. So you're welcome to join in anywhere that you might want to do that and sit and have sandwich with the staff. April 23rd is coffee with the superintendent at CBHS. And I' I've been calling this Heidi's farewell tour because this month she's been making her last rounds with me to all the coffee events. Um Ed talked about the millionword challenge. Some of you have come to the banquet before. Um we would love to have you join us.
So, if it's like a regular season So, what sport are you referring to? Gymnastics. >> Gymnastics. Yeah. So, let's say you went to the Oswego invite. Right. >> Okay, you're throwing a regular season competition. Yes, they could take first place as a team at that invite, but once you went to the IHSA state series, that's where again they can only compete as individuals. You would not receive a team score. That's what I just wanted to be clear about. Again, thank you for your work on this. One more question. In terms of the amendment process, are there timelines associated with that, and if so, can you tell us a little bit about that as well? So, yeah, the exact uh deadline I don't have in front of me or remember it right now, but there there is uh a timeline that we have to adhere to to submit um an amendment or a bylaw amendment to that.
Is there any discussion? All those in favor? That motion carries 5. Congratulations. join the picture. I've made all the other coaches and sponsors join the picture. Board members, I want to pause and give a moment if anyone has any comments about the accommodations we've just awarded. >> Absolutely. I'll start with the um accent show choir. Um I I feel like sometimes our um our population gets so um I don't know what's the word expectations become like oh we won again as if that wasn't like the most amazing thing. So to continue to win uh year after year with an entirely different show u with entirely different choreography with multiple switches and costume changes and I I don't know I just it's it's hard for me to wrap my mind around. Um but I can tell you as a as a parent of kids who watch the show um it just leaves a sense of awe in those YouTube videos, those um highlight reels um when you see it coming from not just Avon but the the the shares and the um I don't know retweets if you will.
Um so it just depends on your group size. So um we had 27 in Italy. So it just so happened that our 27 worked with Fountain Centrals in the same time frame. So depending on your group size, you will be paired with somebody else from another school, other students doing the same thing you're doing. >> It's really cool. The planning, I can't even fathom the amount of planning that goes into this. It's quite interesting. >> Thank you for doing this. >> Yeah. >> So great. >> Thank you for having me. >> Thank you. >> All right. Well, I need a uh a motion and a second to approve this out of country trip to Italy and Greece. I'll make a motion to approve the out of out of country trip. >> I'll second it. >> I have a motion in a second. Any other questions?
When we look at math, again, we see it. There's not a decline for fourth grade, but there is for fifth grade. Now, finding out the reason for that is not always real easy, all right? But what we're looking at is does having the transition impact students? Research shows that um multiple transitions for kids between buildings can have a negative impact on a variety of things, one of which is academic performance. At KB, that hasn't been true. Now, granted, the research is predominantly about middle school age kids. There haven't has not been a lot of research um specific to third, fourth grade situation, but but if we apply it, it talks about multiple transitions. We have four. If they were three, that'd be one less, certainly. Maybe that has some impact in some way. So, if we're considering those, both the ELA and math scores indicate that the transition between third and fourth grade are not being negatively impacted.
Bite-size pieces. Bite-size pieces. So, we had two of our teachers um chosen to be recorded that Dr. Cavazos had asked for them to be recorded doing a vocabulary lesson. Um so, Mrs. Wilson and Mrs. Cottrell. And so, they each we recorded them, um submitted it to Dr. Cavazos. So, she is going to be using these um as training videos from our building, our teachers training all these other teachers in Indiana and then also beyond. So, we have something called learning lab. Um and so, the idea is the the IDOE's on board. They're They're also involved in in the the part with the videos. Um they're talking about making it go beyond Indiana. So, it'll be our teachers' names, Landis Elementary, the administrators and then it'll be out there for people to see to train how to use vocabulary instruction in the classroom. So, it was pretty big deal.
Um we will front-load some professional learning around whatever programming is decided upon, so that in the fall of 2028, we are ready to do a full implementation. And then as Dr. Thibault alluded to, you get into that review cycle again, right? So an implementation year is just that. And I think what's really important is that it's continued professional learning and support. It doesn't go away just because we've selected a program or just because we've given some front-loaded professional learning. Um you know, as again, I'll lean into what we've done with CKLA, our folks from Amplify have been involved all school year, and we will continue to talk about how to best support our folks going forward with years two and beyond. Um and this is just you know, when we talk about high-quality instructional materials, right? There are our um strategic plan talks about adopting high-quality instructional materials.
I totally agree with you, but is there something that we need to do as a board for policy, or is there something we need to talk to the the chief of police for I don't know. I think at least if it's posted, and you come back and there's an issue, and then you have some kind of evidence you can at least open a conversation with those people to like be respectful of Yeah. that. Sometimes you can tie those um malicious type offenses into a trespass offense. Like if you say if you say you're in here uh at certain times when you're not supposed to be, uh you will be charged with trespassing. Or if you're in here with a dog, you will be charged with something else that counts as trespassing. >> to the you know, one of the things is like our our facility is a taxpayer facility, the public.
Yeah. I mean, you can negotiate terms of splitting the cost or something like that. Yeah. I just think that makes more sense cuz if you only sell him part of it, the other part's useless to us. And yeah. That would be my thoughts, too. Okay. So, like a mutual agreement, is that what you're saying? With an easement in there. We'll work on that and try to get that back to you guys in a timely fashion, so he can kind of start planning on what he wants to do over there. So, Okay, ASB renewal. Okay, so um our KASB [clears throat] membership is up for renewal. It does have a slight increase in the cost from year to year. So, that uh we have participated in the legal assistance and we've used that quite a bit this past year. So, I'm fortunate that we did opt into that.
