pride and number 12 cody moore collin with the second up and good under a minute to go 16-3 pirates lead good strong finish there by raver he's got all their points usually this is the spot where coach meyer likes to go 41 to a layup well if they're going to sit in the zone he's content to just take the last shot here yeah probably have a set set coming and looking at the ball screen and then kick opposite reversals kai dyer for the three [Music] good first quarter by the pirates with a score of 19-5 you know we talked about early in the year some mistakes or looking rusty or channeling energy in the right spot looks like the pirates are focused they shot the ball well which always makes everything look better but i thought their execution was good yeah and they defended the paint very well there was a lot of contested shots yeah on the defensive end for us so um you know i think that's probably about how you would like to start um and now the trick is to keep it going you know the 14 point lead is pretty sizable in the first quarter but we got a lot of basketball to play i i think bates was you've been around a lot of these games they got a lot of runs in them yeah it's just the nature of it nature of rivalry games in general where you're talking whether you're talking about the high school level or college level um teams that string runs together usually successful batesville is going to make some adjustments they're very very competent staff over there that they're gonna you know do some things to decline back in this um would you find like the next two three minutes are really important for batesville yeah i mean if you're down 14 and i i would say that it's important that it doesn't get more than four teams because if it gets to 21 then the game is is gonna get it's gonna be done but if batesville can maintain and right the ship here greensburg's going to be in for a long night that was firm batesville secures the offensive rebound now they're running their half court motion and batesville is notorious for some back cuts you know back screen back like right there back screen back cut that gets you falling asleep yeah i'm trying to get an easy bucket at that on a back cut and turnover by the bulldogs batesville is going to stay in their 2-3 zone and turnover by cummer batesville pushes in transition and 25 up and good that's kaiser for two another turnover so in the first two minute or first minute of the second quarter we got two turnovers on two possessions kaiser with a hook shot that was more of a kevin mchale that was a bar skyhook no no nice pass jeter didn't have three turnovers three turnovers for the pirates on three possessions baseball tries to back cut nothing there back out to raver pulls up baseline bounces around no good offensive rebound battle for the ball for a second batesville settles in and pearson kicks it out to number 25 kaiser he tries to take it one-on-one hands it off raver short corner jumper up and good ravers got seven of the nine for batesville greensburg reverses the ball up to cummer he attacks nice penetration and lays it off for brendan stanley and he is going to go to the line for two brendan is traditionally a pretty decent free-throw shooter as he told me a couple weeks ago he is now a shooter he's been classified as a shooter now so that was good to know by his own distinction yes absolutely yeah i don't i don't know if coach meyer has given him that label but hey played the part right there yeah absolutely that was pure that's his third point on the night appears that foul was on number 23 cason hughes stanley with free throw number two it's up and good 21-9 in favor of the pirates 5 55 to go here in the second quarter and we have a foul on the pirates kai yep his first bait still out of bounds underneath their own bucket in a little triangle set here got barnes pet it back in for walters double screen on the one side didn't like it this ball stays on the same side of the floor trying to feed the post deflection up and good tough shot there yep nicely done greensburg pushes in transition comer okay that uh i shouldn't have been talking there because that was pretty impressive yeah colin just drove it up their back and decided he was going to cram it yep so good for him good strong finish [Music] that uh that works just do that that's better than any commentary we'll give yeah yeah so that is his 12th point on the night yeah and garrett garrett's gonna burn a timeout here because he wasn't happy with their transition defense and rightfully so i mean you're gonna give up a layup in transition after a make too that's even more frustrating when you do that um just not it's not having good recognition there and the pirates took advantage 23-11 you asked me about the first two or three minutes batesville's trimmed this to 12.

and it's buckets like if you're batesville it's buckets like those that are so frustrating because if you're trying to call back into the game edward's on top playing ball pressure post feed in for batesville nice feed up and good colin has it once again push up the sideline nothing there right back to kai dyer he skips over to jeter short corner brendan stanley in the corner trying to attack gaps and look at what's open good ball fake brendan stanley nice up and in it's his six point batesville once once again being very deliberate taking their time looking for an opportunity to drive it to the bucket attempts to attack the rim no good batesville secures it step back three off the front kai dyer secures the rebound and he pushes colin cummer oh little hesitation and it's blocked not sure what colin was doing right there at the i think he got himself a little further under the basket than he than he wanted works out ball still belongs to greensburg out of bounds underneath going to a flat set screen in handoff seen that play a time or two here and a staggered double colin comes off drives hangs in the air no good batesville rebound oh and good afternoon and it is going to belong to greensburg good hustle play there by addison barnes pedic absolutely jeter edwards to take it in for greensburg brendan stanley is one of those dudes that can never keep his jersey tucked in step in bucket is good off the inbounds batesville reverses the ball tries to step in post hard nothing there ball to the wing little back screen nothing doing pearson has it trying to be aggressive kick out for three thought about it nope shoot the fade away up and good hughes cason hughes with the fade away greensburg once again pushes looks nothing skip move colin comer for three i'm gonna say he's feeling it just spitballing yeah i wouldn't mind a heat checker here yeah 30 to 15 250 to go here in the first half batesville post feed thought about it 40 is travel called for the travel kai dyer checking back in for barnes pettit raver checking back in for number 40.

which don't really have a 40 there so that says reserve all right it's cool greensburg with the ball oh there's the lob plays batesville attacks the hoop off the front of the iron jeter in transition kicks it ahead kai dyer drops it off jeter's excited nice finish nice finish oh we got a foul here's alan walters appears to be i think he tried to interfere with the cutter trying to get to the basket that's his second so he'll probably take a seat for the rest of the half batesville in the box set inbound to the top raver thought about peeking out nothing there spin dribble kick out to three up and no good batesville offensive rebound he's thinking about it and decides to do it that one is also no good colin comer with it and attacks that's there's the heat check you were referring to earlier that's his 21st point had a nice efficient night thus far yes and we'll talk about the opposite of of efficient there's batesville that throws the ball out of bounds yeah 120 to go here and a half baits with the ball up 21.

and batesville is still in their zone greensgerber greensburg doing a nice job of not standing against this zone moving the ball well cutting keeping batesville not understanding where they're at also good crisp ball movement kai with the floater up and good it's his seventh point he's also had an efficient night yes taking taking good shots and attacked the rim when it's presented itself batesville trying to get a bucket here at the end of the first half and trim into this lead getting instructions from his coach we wind down here 13 seconds to go colin on the ball trying to check raver ball screen behind his back spin oh threw it to pirate pete pirate pete's got to get his hands up he's got to get it he's got to step into it and be ready to go yeah ravers got through a better pass though yeah that situation that's uh [Music] see if we oh we got him ah watch camera there kai it was a little bit a little firm on the pass justin atkins going to check in for stanley yeah we don't want to pick up any any noise here any unnecessary fouls at the end of the half nine seconds to go lob it nice play by question oh and they got it back nice had a clean look at it but it didn't go batesville's way we conclude the first half greensburg 38.

kai dyer with seven addison barnes pettit with two brandon stanley with six greensburg scored 19 points in the first quarter 19 points in the second quarter for uh batesville thomas raver has nine cason hughes has four and kate kaiser has two i'm gonna double check your math here real quick i think you're right just want to see if you're nine four two you drop a niner in there niner yeah yeah all right so total of 15 38 15. halftime score you know let's talk a little philosophy here oh absolutely i was a little surprised that second quarter batesville didn't come out of their zone a little quicker maybe they feel like they can't guard us to be worse than 23 but we handled the zone well and moved it on you know reversed the ball from side to side but also moved it quickly flash in a lot of duck ends and then we drove the ball and shout out to june right june rigney yeah saint yep she's blushing yeah but uh i just thought we attacked the zone really well with ball movement and also with either flashes or dribble penetration to get in the middle of the court yeah and you know the nice thing is you know with colin with 21 it wasn't colin coming down and and dribble dribble dribble dribble and trying to get his own shot like it was within the flow of the offense it was move cross court move cross court and then colin dribble penetrate through being able to get into the middle lane or hitting an open three i will agree it did not feel like colin was really dominating the action but he was definitely the floor generator yeah so he was he was being the scorer and the point guard and and getting the ball where it needed to go for the team to be successful it just happened to be that he scored 21 which is he he was efficient as we discussed before but he made great decisions in all situations and that that shows his basketball iq i felt the hustle i thought the effort everything looked really really good now i would say the big big quest and uh question is quarter three how do we come out at halftime um motivated and trying to run here and oh are they gonna chase him yep they're gonna chase colin comer so boxing one yep what do you do differently offensively when when the defense changes like that and boxing ones you do you play zone offense or do you play a man-to-man offense or you just like hey dyer just do that well that's the problem when you run i mean i'll call it a junk defense when you run that it's very difficult to rebound out of it batesville now with it up top looking to feed the post from the top of the floor forces it and turnover by the bulldogs dakota walters scramble for the ball and it's knocked out of bounds possession belongs with the pirates kai dyer to inbound to man on the out of bounds yeah i'm curious to see if that's just out of the out of bounds if that's what they're going to go to from here on out or go back to the box one barnes peta has on the right wing skips over after the flare screen walters nothing there over to dyer looks inside moves it up walters dribbles to the top of the floor nice quick move and he is fouled and will shoot two good aggressive take by kai there vows on moore for batesville it's his first first of the second half kai with his first it's up and good that's his tenth point on the evening nicely done we have not missed a free throw this evening for those guys stack checking me at home that's how you win ball games batesville now trying to get something going offensively it's been a rough go for them and kai picks off the reversal pass and is fouled not sure what kai was going to do with it but i think he was i think he was going hard he cradled it as if he was going to go dominique wilkins windmill yeah the human highlight reel i don't think he has it in him but yeah more power to him though be great to see it dyer once again despite his cradle makes the first free throw second one got it up and good score 44-15 6-15 left to go here in the third quarter baseville running their baseline cut their bread and butter offense there's a shuffle cut gets them a good look and they lay it in that basket goes to thomas raver greensburg in their quick transition that they did in the first half kai dyers he's got the hot hand now well you notice his aggressiveness he's made some free throws and is feeling the rhythm and love that three-point attempt when you're feeling confident and you see the ball going the rim everything just feels right that's right that's right batesville with the three-point attempt no good colin secures the rebound takes it nice kicks to the head now if i'm not mistaken this year there is a new rule in high school basketball that in the second half if it gets to 35 the mercy rules turned on the clock will not stop except for free throws and timeouts is that accurate yes there is a mercy rule i can look it up on my phone here i'm not sure if it if it's 35 i think i think it i think football and basketball is the exact same and it's 35 in the second half i know there is a mercy rule but i just can't confirm that it's for sure 35.

for all our valued listeners out there if anybody knows the answer feel free to call grant peters let him know now call is not necessary thanks for putting that out there on the airwaves so we got five and a half minutes left here in the third quarter what do you think coach meyers going through in the huddle right now with the game like this just keep on you know i mean keep keep in the flow of the offense keep playing great defense and you know i don't know yeah i think i think you talked to him about execution like whatever his game plan was whatever he wanted to focus on and you know we're not privy to that obviously but whatever those simple items are he wants him to keep that focus let's not get sloppy here let's not develop anything that's gonna you know spill over to our next game let's have a good strong finish and hey the guys on the end of the bench yeah they work hard too they may need to get themselves ready here if we can keep this clean good help side by kai kai dyer's got 16 points on the evening right now showing great effort great hustle yep that's a tough play the ball was basically on the top so there's no help side yeah he just read the play and did help even though the ball hadn't declared to side so goodbye kai to anticipate there just couldn't come up with it and batesville tried to spin move it didn't work colin with another rebound he pushes kicks to kye check and we talked about the confidence as a shooter that might have been borderline heat check but he caught it in rhythm i really like the shot i like the play i like the attitude i like the approach happy for kai that he was able to make it and i do believe we should be at the mercy rule now i don't believe that clock is going to stop and shot boy he took he took one to the head travel yeah the clock is still continuing to move even oh well it stopped now now the clock's back moving i think they called it for a possible injury and now it stopped i don't know what's going on it's kind of like watching water boil you're gonna keep watching it's just gonna mess with you yeah keep staring at it i don't know why yeah batesville with the ball underneath their own bucket running a box set inbound to the post he dribbles it out tries to dribble drive looking for the opposite side it's not there kai kicks it ahead to brendan stanley nothing there he wants a foul not going to get us on the comer colin good deflection able to secure the steal and he okay that's his first points of the second half he's got 23 now that's tough a tough play tough play to defend yeah nicely done by colin 54-17 350 to go here colin almost with another steal batesville keeps possession they'll be out of bounds on the side around half court cheater edwards checking into the game for greensburg that clock is going now makes me feel better that i said something correct batesville once again trying to get something going offensively they're searching ravers got it feet on the line two-pointer is good greensburg quickly up the floor that's his 13th he has 13 of the 19.

brendan stanley over to jeter skips to kai boy he thought about it moved it on good choice walters drives kicks it to brendan stanley still good no issues here collins got it oh they're calling him for a hook yeah official saw the chicken wing and got him after the offensive foul batesville gets it out of bounds they're bringing up the floor here looking for post feed good help by jeter edwards shooter left open up top three by number 440 what do i believe is sam johnson all right so we're gonna go with sammy he's good boy jeter edwards tries to throw it to the wing it's knocked out of bounds possession remains with the pirates pirates won't return to action for another week where they will host triton central and then we get into uh in the week after that then we got jennings county on the 17th and then at franklin county yeah it's good to get conference play going again jeter edwards with a nice take gets him a bucket strong finish and raver attacks and makes the layup and is fouled um fouls on dakota walters that's number three in dakota greensburg's gonna take short time out here before ravers shoots his plus one free throw uh been really impressive here by greensburg yeah um it'd be interesting to see over the course of the season if if greensburg is that dynamic offensively or if batesville just really struggled to guard or match up with us tonight right because it has been a struggle all night for batesville and it's it's nice to say that as for us being greensberg fans but um it's just hard to tell what reality is right we've got a lot of a lot of hope for optimism here and greensburg's had a great showing and it's great to see the pirates be on top but you know i want to see how that equates as they move through their season when they play a talented triton central team or get into conference play with franklin county um or the the great richmond tournament sure you're going to see something yeah legit competition and then you know connorsville is always good and with the style they play and and well some of the easy buckets that we're getting in transition connorsville's gonna they're absolutely gonna take that away from us absolutely batesville is trying to come out with a little three-quarter court trap one guard front greensburg we seem to handle it pretty well kick to kai dyer and he is still feeling it dare i say in fuego i didn't dare you but you took it upon yourself thank you i ain't scared i know you're not good rebound by jeter good aggressive play there to rip that one down i like it all right you know if they're not gonna guard and they might as well take it out of the net yeah so 62-25 as we wind down the third quarter here that's dyer's fifth three-pointer on the night wow well done by kai he has 23.

oh that's gonna be walters fourth foul [Music] and with the running clock it runs out the first quarter and that was a non-shooting foul because neither team is in the bonus so reset the [ __ ] for eight minutes were going into the fourth quarter 62-25 if you do the math there that's 37 points that the pirates lead that is we scored 24 and a half that quarter we scored 19 19 and 24 to batesville's five 10 and seven and raver had all seven points for batesville in the third quarter pirate's obviously being paced by two guys come here with 21 and and dyer with 23. yeah and i think you got a lot a lot to be happy with greensburg pirates you know i said it earlier but really now the guys on the end of the bench don't normally get an opportunity do need to be getting themselves ready this is kind of this type of game where they can get themselves some quality minutes and uh be good to see them get an opportunity here as a matter of fact we got a couple guys in right now who we got abe tevi jack mckenzie granger maxwell and bradley lutz i would assume our starters will probably be done for the evening the ones who are out and then at some point uh addison will probably be coming out of the game and probably addison couldn't come in or justin atkins couldn't come in because he played in the first half so he already used his allotment kaiser with two did atkins play all four quarters of the jail i believe he did okay so yeah he would be done good pass by granger lutz up two points good for him it's good to see those guys who've worked hard all year long too getting be able to get some action in sure sure turnover by batesville greensburg our kids are going to get a chance to play a little offense here batesville showing their three-quarter court trap let's see how these young kids deal with it reversal oh nice quick pass everybody couldn't handle it what's that jack yep bait's a little attacked in transition and raver is fouled granger maxwell in the stat book yep 64-27 as raymond goes to the line to shoot two you know while we wind down action here you want to talk about gtv a little bit sure love to don't you get a couple a couple stabs well you know the nice thing is as we're doing this i know you've received a couple text messages i've received a couple text messages from people watching and um i certainly appreciated all the multiple views and opportunity um who can you run down who's on the crew with us tonight what's up you know the one main one right now behind the scenes running all the the switchers and all that is jessica williams jess is a you know first time she's doing this and she was she was a little nervous beforehand so she's doing an excellent job um and then uh brayden jacobs braden's braden's on a mic on a camera uh jenna ankney's up on a camera and every race is on another camera so we got we got all all people getting after it and uh just making a great production happen in addition to you know monday and things yeah i was actually going to give us a little shout out for that we have our elementary christmas program next monday and tuesday that is always a a nice event and what's better than a bunch of young kids singing christmas carols yeah and you got one to be singing on monday don't you i do oh gunner yeah he's gonna be he's a good boy yeah he is um he that's going to be a good time so plays getting interesting here addison barnes pettit gets an assist and lays it in after a little chaos there five minutes to go here you know with our other winter sports we also have uh swimming and wrestling and the girls basketball season has kicked off girls basketball they played number one uh triton central the other day and went toe-to-toe with them had a really nice game they did playing some young girls getting better every game we've streamed two of their games and been very impressed of how much better they've gotten over the last two games that we were able to broadcast the i show our girls basketball team is going to take on connorsville tomorrow looking at some other future events i show our swimming team is on the road at madison on thursday as well as our boys wrestling at jennings county on thursday night wrestling against jennings county in switzerland county and the boys are back in action as we discussed against triton central cheer block going nuts i think chef patel is getting ready to check in fan favorites yeah patel yep shiv shiv's a little there he comes in [Applause] shiv's in direct in traffic already love it shiv is our senior class president as well yes yes now we need to get him the rock and let him get to get some action get it to him shoot it yeah the fan base wants him that's for sure shiv has been a great kid in our building yeah sets a positive tone and good citizen and we're glad to have him glad to know him do you ever get a chance to sit down and have a conversation with shiv it is well worth your time great kid great kid jack mckenzie to the line here first one is up and it is off the back iron he's gonna get a second one here second free throw for mckenzie oh good reborn by granger maxwell get it to him there he goes that would have brought the roof down it would have brought the roof down i'm actually kind of surprised he didn't make it wouldn't have been more surprising woke up my head zoned to the carpet sky tis the season couldn't help it batesville now got a couple subs in themselves trying to make something positive there's a nice look inside to kaiser 25 he's a freshman is he not i believe i believe kate kaiser is a freshman he is a ninth grader correct now batesville on the other end with the foul and mr lutz is going to go to the line to shoot a couple [Music] bradley's got a little bounce to him doesn't he yes yes he does yeah he's got a little yeah got a little shiftiness he got hurt there at the end of the football season and we missed him we missed him on some special teams and things and yeah um yeah got a little bounce got a little toughness got a little grit i'd like to throw out a little congratulations to sam west football player for the pirates he's receiving many and multiple division one offers um received one from purdue this week um tennessee's offered to him off iowa state's offer to him iu's offer to him toledo's offered um so that's kind of exciting for him and yeah hopefully uh you know nice thing as we get him another year and uh hopefully more offers come in he finds a great place to be able to go get a superior education and play some football next year or two years from now that's awesome congratulations to sam here granger miss timed that jump good hustle ball is going to go to the pirates here also going to put a plug in for our music program you know you hear the pep band playing tonight they have some competitions next week they have also a band concert not this weekend but next weekend and in action this weekend is our choir concert on sunday afternoon here in goddard auditorium so i encourage you to check that out if you would have an interest they put on a good show very talented kids work really hard they do nice job shiv giving a little shake yeah shake it shiv nothing there mckenzie takes it in good strong move and he is fouled going to shoot two when a not beneficial thing about the mercy rules it does top on free throws first one's up is good as we wind down here pirates up 72-35 with a minute 50 to go you know as a coach going into this locker room i don't think stacey's going to be very long-winded no got to be super pleased with what he saw here hopefully he can use a couple of teaching points to build into his next matchup at triton central and at minimum you develop some confidence to say hey you might have pretty good ball club on our hands yeah pretty good offensively and did what we needed to do defensively um since we're a low budget unit here i i'd like to see the rebound numbers um because if we i would have to think we dominated the rebound numbers too i agree how well we shot the ball um and how the flow of the game went but it's hard to find anything to critique with with our game tonight yeah i could even say that to the young kids on the floor right now too been strong with it and seemed to be trying to do philosophically what what the older kids did or what the more experienced kids did so um good night it's always great to get a win against batesville conference win and yeah maybe sectional opponent so it's good for the pirates nothing bad about tonight for the pirates it's always a good feeling as a coach when you can dump the bench and get everybody some time doesn't happen a lot no unfortunately bradley lutz up and good with the first free throw he gets a profession of the personnel items from the december right and dr julie can you do that we have several items um i will offer the board my retirement letter wednesday night it's been a great experience that i've stayed a couple years so i appreciate the opportunity to work with our kids uh the second generation of questions um so this more uh procedural i understand you you've already retired like technically correct is this more of a formality the state allows certified employees to retire and return to work after a year at one time the district worked for the third-party company we've had about five people retire at one time and they were third-party employees employees that company for a year a year and a half and they came back those wanted to come back and came back in as a full-time employees which is legal i was one of those that came back in so that happened a few years ago and so technically yes i've been picking up my retirement and my my age range um it's 80 points at that time now it's 85 um because the funds went down a little bit but it was eight plus years of service and had to have 80 points be fully tested i had 96.

please mrs doyle here mr gatewood president mrs johnson present mrs croner here dr mourinho present mrs simultan present mrs swanson president please stand for the pledge of allegiance i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all on behalf of the board of education i would like to thank the public for attending tonight's meeting we value the feedback we receive from our residents and encourage everyone to take an active interest in their public school system residents interested in speaking to the board this evening are asked to have completed a comment card and presented it to the secretary to the board when the secretary calls your name i ask that you come to the microphone state your name for the public record and provide your feedback please note that comments are limited to 3 minutes per person for a total of 30 minutes no discussion of personnel matters or responses to questions are permitted the board does not participate in discussion during public comment if your questions or concerns require follow-up a member of the administration will reach out through the contact information provided on the comment card thank you jared plover my name is jared kloger and i reside at 2776 la jolla court aurora first thank you for your service to our community i want to address the decision by the board to inform now say township bristol township kane county and the will county portions of the school district that they need not apply for the vacant board member position that will be coming up i would like to do so by looking at what the school code actually says ilcs511a does state that if districts voters do not agree to change to an at-large from within district if it was formed prior to january 1st 1975 then it needs to adhere to congressional township rules however it also states uh following under 105 ilcs 511a8 subsection b if the territory of the district is greater than two congressional congressional townships then no more than three school board members may be selected from one township oswego school uh district a school district has at least four townships that apply here why is this advice coming out now this should have been called out years ago it wasn't it was stated the person who must replace the outgoing board member must be from oswego township according to 105 ilcs 11a subsection b the opposite may be true it is possible we shouldn't have four board members from any one township you're attempting to create a precedent and create divisions that don't exist that's a problem i'm asking that since the law firm serving the board has ties to other taxing bodies inside oswego township you seek external advice on this matter the fact that the law firm represents other taxing bodies has finally come inside oswego township has finally become an issue here with this topic further if you find that in fact this has been an issue for years i ask that you seek bids for a new law firm so that we can look at avoiding this conflict of interest in the future i want to make it clear i could have cared less where the next board member came from until this was made an issue there are plenty of good people ready to represent our district from oswego township i have a problem with us saying nausea or bristol need not apply there are plenty of good people living in those townships as well divisions are being created that never existed here before this is the opposite of being inclusive you cannot just decide to open and close state code randomly if you're going to apply and apply it if you're going to apply it you have to apply the whole thing i do not believe that voters if oswego township is indeed 75 of the population of the entire school district i do not believe voters understand the ramifications and i don't think we've been applying those rules for years and we should ask why if on the other hand oswego's oswego township is not 75 of the population of this school district then you're actually doing the opposite of what you should be doing and i highly recommend that you seek some outside guidance in this case and i would like to know why there's a conflict of interest here thank you for your time thank you that's it okay it is now time for our board member comments who would like to begin sure i'll go first i recently had an opportunity to attend the joint annual conference for illinois for the illinois association of school boards and it was a phenomenal opportunity for me as a new school board member to not only network but just to contextualize all of the information that i've been getting i felt like drinking from a fire hose but having been on the board for several months and now hearing the information again it was it was a great opportunity to be able to understand and a lot of dots connected and just a quick highlight uh two of them that stood out one was about leveraging the federal funds the difference between blending and braiding funds with the uh with our local school board was a phenomenal uh seminar but the one that really stood out was actually from valley view school district addressing our collective well-being through partnerships and they just went over their strategy for student wellness staff wellness and community wellness and it was it was outstanding and so i just really appreciate the opportunity to be able to attend um the the conference and i most definitely recommend it for us going forward uh the other thing i just want to talk about is some things that i'm proud of i mean we've been uh how long has it been now what 66 months that we've been on the board and i'm just exceptionally proud in it and excited and i can't say it enough and it seems like thank you doesn't say it enough for our teachers our staff administration even the board members for their continued uh support and of going above and beyond for our students and for what's right in the district i just i'm extremely pleased and i just can't say thank you enough so thank you um there's been a almost definitely been a concerted effort toward climate and culture which i think is most definitely the the framework that we need in order to continue to uh implement what's necessary for our students and so i'm really excited about that and so student voice is something that with the evidence of our two student ambassadors that are now on the board is something that i have heard previous boards talk about and i'm just excited that it's actually happened where we do have student to student ambassadors that are currently on the board and we can easily implement and we've been talking about implementing what's best for them but to not only have their voice at the table but to also have a systematic process of capturing their thoughts their desires and even their wants is is phenomenal and with the implementation of the most the initial survey which was which was actually only going to focus on the impact uh that teachers and administrations was having on the students but the students actually found another critical critical concern during the deliberation where they not only wanted to focus on the teacher and administrations focus on students but peer-to-peer interactions and from that we were able to uncover many things that we have already started to address and will continue to do so so climate and culture goes much deeper than what we even previously previously addressed so i'm just really proud and excited to be a part of that committee and what i've seen happen in the board thus far go ahead no you go um like eugene said over the weekend of november 19th through the 20th we were able to attend the joint annual conference of iasb iasa and iasco our schedules were full from early friday morning until saturday afternoon i was able to attend over 11 sessions made multiple connections and had so many productive conversations about what other districts were doing and while we often are focused on the things that need to be quote unquote fixed we lose sight of the things that are going really well and this was such a great opportunity that weekend to learn about the things that we were doing well in one of my sessions and we all attended different sessions so we were able to cover as much area as possible i shared about our student ambassadors and had so many people come up to us afterwards i shared about our board monitoring forms and had a district reach out and ask how we are monitoring ourselves so many things that we're doing right that we need to also remember that it's okay every once in a while to say good job um no one as we all know gives us a manual on how to be a board member but this opportunity to us spend the weekend was was great to um be able to see where we still have a long way to go but where we're doing okay as well so i look forward um to going next year and the years beyond it was invaluable time spent i also want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude specifically to the oswego custodial and maintenance association membership for their dedication to our grounds and maintenance needs they are indeed essential to our district and finally as everyone knows we experienced the unfathomable on friday locking down one of our junior highs i cannot imagine the parents who are waiting to safely see their see their students remain home return home but i am very proud of each and every one of our staff members including the bus driver who called out disturbing behavior it is this vigilance that will keep our students and our community safe and i encourage everyone never to hesitate if your intuition tells you that something is off thank you i don't i don't really have a prepared statement tonight but um i just want to say i had the opportunity this weekend to attend crystal's concert at oswego high school i think oe has a similar event and didn't this is an annual event that not just parents come to the concert you know but the entire community likes to come out and participate in this last year everything was remote and it was a pretty sad reflection of itself so to have the event this year in person it was absolutely phenomenal i want to give a special shout out to all of the choir kids who stood up there and sang their hearts out with the masks on the whole time and just did a terrific job i have a hard time like talking for a long time with it on so let alone like singing and moving around and you know they just it was such a great show and every year the finale just brings tears to my eyes and this year was no different so it was i will definitely miss that event um yeah that's all i got i'll go um i had some prepared remarks but i misplaced my phone so i will just speak from my heart when i think about um you know my experience on the school board thus far i think about perspective and perspective is everything it's like when you are in the forest and you can't see the trees you need to back up right and so for me my perspective has been one where i've seen the district as a as a parent i've lived in the community for 27 years so i've seen a lot i've seen the district from the perspective of employee i was employed with the district for 10 years and now as a board member and i i'm very proud of the fact that in order for us sometimes to see how well we're doing or not um we have to get outside of our bubble and i too attended the iasb triple i conference and it was as jen had said many of our many of the people who we interacted with we oftentimes are seen as the standard bearer for some of the things that we're doing in the district and as a as an employee of the district one of the things that i know we are um being a standard bearer for is our climate for learning framework and we talk a lot now about our climate and our culture and how we want to see our climate and our culture to be one where you know all students can benefit from how we're educating them and to know that our climate for learning framework has been put on a national stage and many any individuals um come to us for that particular framework and how we're doing it as well as our our student voice efforts which i was an integral part of in the fact that our student voice ambassadors were able to present to the illinois association of school boards and its 1800 members i mean 800 school districts was a was a great achievement and not many districts are doing our student voice in the way we are doing it in terms of um making sure that our students aren't just consumers of the decisions that adults are making but they are actually a part of access and voice for these opportunities and we see that sitting here at this at this very table and so i'm very proud of the things that that we are doing i'm i've seen um our administrators excel in so many ways when it comes to how we had to stand up um in the in the face of covet and what our teachers and our administrators had to do and how they had to pivot in terms of making sure that our students were educated and doing the best job that they could and i saw the long hours that they worked and i'm just i'm proud of them as as administrators i'm proud of our building staff i'm proud of our teachers and our students for how they've excelled in the face of adversity and the turmoil that we've gone through so i'm proud to be a part of this board and i'm excited because a lot of the things that i saw and the reason that i ran is are now are now being implemented and change is happening and so i'm proud to be part of that change um and actually what i want to say actually kind of dovetails with what i just heard latonya say i had an opportunity recently to speak with a fifth grade classroom and when the teacher and the principal were kind of explaining what my role is and how i participate in the district this is a fifth grade class 10 and 11 year olds i had a young man raise his hand and say are you the person i need to talk to because i want to wear my hood after i come in from recess and i'm not allowed to and i said yep that's actually the dress code is one of the things that the school board does at which time i offered all of the students the opportunity to ask questions of what they would like to see and we went through an option where we could talk about if it was a teacher's decision a principal's decision or a school board decision and they were engaged and they wanted to know these things it was a really cool thing and it was it's so great to see you guys here i think this is my favorite thing from being on the school board out of all the years this is probably the coolest thing just that you're sitting here but also that at fifth grade they're already critically thinking and asking the kinds of questions about who is making the decisions that are affecting me now and that we can do that at elementary it's it's an amazing thing and i hope that we continue down the path doing more of this thanks um so ditto on everything although i am most excited about our thinking outside the box as a district and i know that i imagine that we'll get a presentation on this pretty soon but um there we had 13 or 14 staff members that were trained in a in what they call erlang screenings so if your kid right now is struggling to read or they're not sure that they're struggling to read but their grades maybe aren't what they should be there's a new it's not new but it's new to us and it's just another way to help kids comprehend what they're reading and i'm hopeful that it makes it soon to the school board level and that i look forward to you guys presenting at triple i like i'd like to really as a district i think we're the first district to actually put it out full full-blown and i'd like to you know kind of keep track of it and see how many kids we really are helping so that we can spread it out to other districts near us because it's a very unique opportunity to us we go that has some really huge potentials on not only test scores but comprehension overall as well so imagine that's coming up so i also attended the conference and definitely learned a lot and got rejuvenated certainly it was great to to attend the equity sessions it was great to sit with other board presidents and and hear what they're doing especially as being both a new board member and a new board president and also to hear that we're really we're all having the same struggles because of the times that we're in and it was just reassuring um to be together to be in the same boat as well as what the others have said in all the good things we're doing especially with our student ambassadors and our student voice and our equity statements and how um there are ways that we are leading the pack and that was that was really awesome to see as you know being on the school board if you work in the district we're always seeking improvement and so sometimes you just get focused on what's not going well or not not right and it really is important for us to take a step back and look at our accomplishments and celebrate them i also had the opportunity to go to long beach elementary last week as well as the wheatlands and it's always fun to get into the schools to see the kids to talk with the teachers and the tas and all of the staff and really express our our gratitude and one of the things that i've seen over and over in every school and every administrator i talk to is just their their passion for what they do their passion for serving the kids and how much everybody just really loves their colleagues and how much they love working together and uh how that how that keeps them going and i know that although there's been um rough patches of course coming back and it hasn't been off to an easy start people over and over again understand that it is a national problem and um they're grateful to be back in school and at the end of the day they're really happy to be back in school just a few words on our upcoming board vacancy the board vacancy will take effect january 3rd so this is um miss kroner's last board meeting which is sad um ruth has been a huge help to me as a as a new board member and a new board president and i certainly am i'm going to miss her a lot um but the the position will um be vacated on january 3rd at that time we will be posting um an application online which will be available online for two weeks we will be taking applications for two weeks and then our intention is to interview on our second board meeting of the month in january on january 24th and so you can look for that that information on the website for those of you that have already reached out that you're interested in applying and that ursula has been taking down we will send you an email with the link to the application so let's move on to our board committee reports and we have the equity committee tonight right i will go first though i did um and i'll mention it later when we in the items to are for approval tonight there is a policy that the equity committee would like to pull we have some suggestions um but we had a great meeting as usual in our equity committee it's just a great group of people who communicate well with each other and openly and um i've really appreciated being part of that committee i'm sad that i'll actually be missing my teaching and learning committee next meeting next week you'll be great jen um because i've also enjoyed being a part of that committee as well it's another great group of people who openly discuss and communicate their ideas and really appreciate that um and if you want to tanya take over and share about what else we sure how did our community so we had an opportunity to get a first look at our social emotional learning presentation that will be given to the board in january dr heidi pajasik spoke on um like the evolution of social emotional learning and the history of seo in our district and where where we have been with sel and where we'd like to go she talked about the professional development that will um become a part of of developing the staff and for our district as well as the creation of a of a team of individuals at the district level who will help drive um this social emotional learning um into the into the buildings and so there was a lot of great discussion on that and look forward to that uh presentation that'll come up in january and then um as ruth talked about we we discussed um policy five uh colon ten around um minority recruitment and i think it's important uh when we we first talked about the context of the policy committee and how they go about reviewing policy and who gets to see that that work as they go forward we discussed um the sharing of work within when throughout each committee and the possibilities of um us taking a look at some of the work that they're doing and vice versa and and the other committees so that we're not operating in silos but that we have some um between the work that's being done because this committee certainly had some very good suggestions for some of the wording i mean when you just think about you know the word minority i mean it's up to us as leaders to um to talk and discuss sometimes the deficit discourse that arises and just because um you know the powers that be used certain words doesn't mean that they're right and appropriate and that we should take a look at those words and so our committee wanted to to discuss that word minority and some other suggestions around um some of the language because language is is culture and culture is language and so we want to make sure that we as a district are getting our language right and that we are speaking to what it is that we want to um our our students and and on our community to understand who we are and what we are and it comes and it starts with language and so we want to address that as well all right good evening board i have two items that i'd like to share with you this evening uh the first is i would like to thank ruth kroner for her service on the school district 308 board of education to your service to our students our staff in our community you've been an outstanding board member and we thank you for that um tonight's your last meeting i wanted you i wanted to say to you it's been a pleasure and honor working with you over the years i've had the opportunity to get you get to know you pretty well and uh you've done great work here in 308 and you should be very proud and i know each and every one of us up here wish you and your family the best in your your next adventures as you move on so thank you for your service to school district 308 no speech necessary don't worry tonight i also wanted to take a moment to highlight one of our successes when i became superintendent in 2016 uh the district was looking at a future of unbalanced budgets and a declining fund balance and we presented a five-year projection that was going in the wrong direction we showed a do-nothing scenario which meant if we didn't change our spending habits that we would not only not have a fund balance at the end of the year 2021 we'd have a 15 million dollar deficit and we were facing uh the possibility of the state coming and take take control and make our financial decisions so we obviously were not going to let that happen we began conversations at the board level and to change that financial picture over the next four years we made some extremely tough decisions and not only to balance the budget but how we would eventually get our school district on the finance the right financial path the where we needed to be five years from now as long as the assumptions we included in the projections that dr petsky gave hold true our school district for the first time in this century will and that will exceed the 20 percent uh minimal recommended fund balance for a school district our size along the way as we increase our fund balance the board of education will have more opportunities to make decisions that will enable us to be the progressive school district that we all want to be we aren't there yet but we are on a positive financial path that will not only change the discussion at this table it will provide more opportunities to ensure that we are meeting our district mission statement of educating all students to reach their highest potential i remember telling the board five years ago that uh getting out of our current situation would not be easy that it would take time but when we do the narrative would change we are already starting to see that change in our academic programming in our athletics programs the opportunities that we are going to be able to provide our students over the next five years i believe that we have the right team sitting at this table to make this happen from our district and building leadership to our staff to our student ambassadors and to our board of education it gives me great pride to be able to say that so tonight is our last meeting of 2021 and before our winter break and i felt that this was an important item to highlight so dr moreno that is my report for this evening thank you and now it is the student ambassadors report good evening since our last board meeting the student advisory committee has had the opportunity to meet twice just recently last week in the first meeting we had since board meeting on the 15th we were able to collaborate on a memo to students staff and parents of sd-308 we wanted to get the word out on the progress and action that was being taken to address the number one priority of students according to the initial survey to improve school climate the issue being sexual harassment all of us wanted to communicate with our district community that we are taking the necessary steps to address student concerns all issues are of importance to us and we continue to advocate for all student voices to feel heard and seen in our schools this particular issue is a major priority to us because after reviewing the results from the survey we found that over 1300 students indicated that sexual harassment was their most important and second most important concern in schools along with the memo sent out on the 19th the student advisory committee also sent out a google slide deck relaying the data observed from the survey pertaining to sexual harassment and why we felt it was necessary to address first as well as defining excuse me as well as on that slide deck we also work to define sexual harassment uh what it is and how students can help in the cost to address and prevent it in our schools we also included our next steps as a committee with regard to research and problem solving which anya will be going over as fellow students and members of the student advisory committee we also want to recognize how all of us are feeling stressed out as we cope with responsibilities and support one another's mental health and now that we are and know that we are here for each other as a district and as and as a student body so like colton said we did make the slides and after making them as well as the memo to inform students on the results of the student survey and how we're working to address them the student advisory committee met on the first of december with mrs waller to begin our exploration with the wipar process it's detailed in the student survey presentation that was sent out as well but wipar or youth led participatory action resource research consists of steps that our committee will employ to gauge a better understanding of sexual harassment as a concern among sd 308's high school student bodies the committee prepared rough problem statements first to understand how we will address this issue focusing mainly on student response to sexual harassment and preventative education on the topic of sexual harassment we plan on refining these statements in further committee meetings in order to maintain specific focuses as we get new perspectives and develop new solutions for this issue we also began drafting research questions we could begin to answer based upon these problem statements for example one of the questions we developed was what is the most effective and appropriate form of education that helps students and staff understand and properly respond to sexual harassment in school settings another was do students feel comfortable reporting sexual harassment and if not what is holding students back from voicing an instance of sexual harassment in creating these research questions we realized that the most appropriate way to answer them was to create another short student survey to determine student knowledge on sexual harassment and to see why students are not comfortable in their learning environments as it relates to this issue in future meetings the student advisory committee plans on following the ypar process by identifying resources that can allow us to accurately collect data through mechanisms such as a student survey thank you thank you thank you 6.1 can i have a motion to approve the consent agenda please i make a motion to approve all items under consent including 6.1 minutes from the board of education meeting on november 15 2021 open and closed session and 6.2 to acknowledge the foia requests received by the district second mrs hamilton hi dr marino aye mr gatewood aye mrs swanson aye mrs croner aye mrs doyle aye mrs johnson aye motion passes 7-0 item 7.1 is an informational item regarding financial statements does the board have any questions regarding what has been provided hearing none item 7.2 is an informational item for a two-year police extension with stuart farms in 2012 the district first entered into a two-year illinois cash farm lease with stewart farms for the 122 acres of district owned property on route 126 near minkler road the lease has been extended every two years since then and the most recently is set to expire on january twenty ninth twenty twenty two we lease the property at three hundred dollars per acre at an annual price of thirty six thousand six hundred dollars per year recent farm doc daily reports the uh reports from the university of illinois provide current farm rental rates for the state of illinois and based on that information 300 per acre remains favorable to the district and exceeds the current values discussed in the university of illinois resources are there any questions on this informational item i feel like i probably asked this same question two years ago when this was up um but have we considered other uses for that property and eugene's pointing at me i think he likes my question well yeah i want to know as a new person how are we currently using it and then i can access that section so how we're currently using it is someone's farming it we have actually so i want to say about four years ago three years ago maybe we had discussed in the finance committee ways that we could potentially recover more earnings from that property that was originally purchased to be the third high school site um there was a variety of things going on but it resulted in expansion to the high school instead and so because at that time property values had lost so much we were completely underwater with it and i'm assuming that was going to be my question as we remain underwater yes we've had a phrase twice since then and the last time it was appraised i think the value was about half of what we paid for okay so this still remained at least a way to recover some of the the use of the property to re creating some income there wasn't anything at that time feasible for us to accomplish with that space instead um it's definitely something that i would be open to reviewing again for the future but this this remains from what i understand the most economically effective use of it got it okay item 7.3 is a follow-up from a previous presentation regarding our delta aquatics program dr petzke yeah thank you so uh just a quick update um some information items so a recap of where we were back in september uh september 27th we talked about the history of the program the aquatics program the different levels we introduced you to the coaches some of the athletes and the fees that they pay to be a part of the program the different types of swim seasons that they have and we took a look at some of the financial data the pool maintenance and we also looked at a variety of other area swim clubs and of course we looked at all of that under the guise of what are the future options what do we what do we want to what do we want from this program and at that time we had three just kind of status quo continuing with the way things are run now we looked at looking into pool rentals and then another one is just discontinuing the program and since that september 27th meeting we added another option that we explored and that was uh to look at what if the district hired an aquatics director and we also expanded some of the options under pool rental we opened up some conversations with the park district to see if a park district was interested in owning or partnering with a competitive swim team we looked at some private owned clubs areas that run them and we also talked with the coaches who currently run the program and their interest in a coach owned swimming club so some of the points that i took away from our conversations and at the cabinet level when we've been talking about this are what what are some of the things we're looking at as we're having these conversations and one of those points was we wanted to decrease the impact on district 308 staff in terms of like program supervision and evaluation the financial oversight and just addressing parent and athlete concerns and liability in addition we wanted to make sure that we still prioritize 308 student opportunities and participation we wanted to keep costs for the program at a minimum and we also wanted to maintain flexibility and that's kind of where the rental agreement idea came from then as well so what i'd like to do is go through those options now and just kind of show you where the kind of the benefits the opportunities and where some of the challenges are for those different options that we're looking at kind of opening up the conversation for the board so first of all was that status quo what are we doing now um we're maintaining a district ownership and oversight of the program um both the delta aquatics program the coaches and the athletes some of the benefits and opportunities there are it's it's been consistent we've been doing that uh for several years for our athletes and our families we've been able to kind of prioritize uh district students for participation in the swim program if you go to other swim programs it's very competitive they take athletes from all over and we do the same but we've got a large large body of students to uh to choose from and it also provides a feeder for the school swim team some of the concerns and challenges that we've talked about since i've been with the district are just also the impact on district staff who runs the program we do have program time and staffing issues that we've run into the administrative kind of supervision of the program the quality of the program the evaluation of the program liability for some of the team issues and just kind of financial oversight as well and then a second big point there is just lack of program oversight with expertise both in running club practices running meets knowing what the needs are of elite athletes and running tournaments and things of that nature so status quo we were kind of challenged with with several of those so in the past when we first ran the program when i started having these conversations asking how did we form the program and obviously began when we built the facility and we had that the pool available to us and the first couple years we actually had an aquatics director so some of the benefits of having an aquatics director one person in charge of that facility definitely dedicated involvement they were allowed to bring their own program vision and philosophy to that program there was a higher higher level of program supervision and coordination that was able to happen and in terms of oversight they've had special expertise in club practices elite athlete needs and running tournaments and things of that nature some of the concerns and challenges why don't we have an aquatics director now well it's additional cost for that aquatics director as real as finding finding the right person to run that program and then even even then the aquatics director there's still the impact on that staff member and the team and the coaches they still have the program time the staffing administrative supervision program evaluation all of the all of the things that we deal with now just through the guise of an aquatics director the third option that we had from last time was what if we discontinued the program and and just meaning that the competitive team would come to a halt and what we would do is just use the pool for oswego co-op swim team and dive team and then also for the physical education program so some of the benefits there are it reduces the impact on district staff for that competitive team and all of the all of the responsibilities that come along with that but then also some of the concerns and challenges are without running that team there's also a loss of revenue we still have pool maintenance costs that we would be responsible for but we wouldn't have any revenue to offset that it also leads to kind of a lack of opportunities for uh athletes and students they would have to go to other clubs and participate and and try to be uh try to make it into those clubs and it also doesn't provide a feeder for the school and the swim teams so those were the three options from last time and now the next three options we kind of talk about those different levels of pool rental agreements and what those could look like so the first one is we definitely began conversations with the park district benefits there are for our district it would reduce the impact on district staff we would have the rental agreement flexibility we would have financial consistency because of the rental agreement we would have a additional community partnership with the park district the current park district does have some experience with running swim teams and swim lessons and would still provide for a feeder for the school swim team some of the concerns and challenges are just facility usage and upkeep um facility supervision and custodial costs that would be something new right now we rely on our own coaches they run the program but in a rental agreement like this we would definitely want a district supervision involvement in the supervision and custodial costs involved with that arrangement and just the uncertainty of prioritization of district 308 student participation not sure you know we would not be responsible for how the park district would run their tryouts and student selection things like that we've had several conversations and at the time that this presentation was put together and submitted for the board tonight we were still talking about the pros and cons with the park district of of them running a program and we just confirmed late last week that they did meet with all of their staff and at this time the park district is not interested in running a competitive swim program so that that one's kind of off the table now but i did want to bring it to the board to let you know that when opportunities like this arise we do feel that it's our due diligence to talk with all of our partners and opportunities and make sure that they um they have an opportunity to look at the look at the programs and the facilities that we have to offer and continue those partnerships so the second kind of pool rental agreement is going with a private owned club there are several clubs that run um they have different levels of governance um uh and some of the benefits are all the same there um kind of as it was for the park district it reduces the impact on district staff it gives us some rental agreement flexibility flexibility through the rental agreement it gives us some financial consistency we don't need to worry about the expenditures and the revenue and things of that nature involved with the program we're just worried about the rental agreement and the use of the facility and then it also provides still student feeders for the the school swim teams that we have as well um and again some of the concerns and challenges there were the same just uh kind of facility usage and upkeep what i'm getting at there when i say that is it's one thing when you own the facility you know the facility and you use it when you rent it sometimes you get you know people are a little bit harder on the equipment in the facilities in that than they normally are so that's just one thing that we would be cognizant of facility supervision and custodial costs would be a part of that agreement as well and again with uh with an elite club a private owned club that uncertainty of uh prioritizing district 308 students for participation in that as well so our very last and final uh pool rental agreement we've had several conversations with our current coaches and they've expressed an interest in forming their own uh business and running the business and then having a rental agreement with the district to continue to do that these are the coaches who have been in the program for several years already some of the benefits there again reduced impact on the district staff we've got the flexibility of the rental agreement some of that financial consistency that comes with a rental agreement with this option though specifically we do have district families have a familiarity with the coaching staff we have familiarity with the coaching staff they've been using our facilities for quite a while coach and coach familiarity with the district facilities they know our facilities they know they've had a lot of say in how we've grown that program and the types of equipment and things that they've needed for that program they do currently prioritize 308 students and that's actually something we could write in the rental agreement too just to make sure that make sure that we we still have a strong involvement from our 308 students it provides some consistency for athletes and families they know the coaches they know the facility they know the program and it provides for a feeder for the school swim teams as well so based on that kind of the timeline that we're looking at last time we talked about this we had talked about the short season which runs from the pretty much the beginning of the school year until about february or march and then they begin their second season which is called the long season that begins in march and what we would be looking to do is transition in february of 2022 so the students are already a part of that team they're already working for their short season um and in 2022 we could transition to a pool rental agreement or at least at least explore what that could look like with a coach owned coach owned opportunity which brings me to my last administrative recommendation is uh i'd like to ask the board to allow us to pursue a pool rental agreement specifically with a focus on our current coaches uh who are running the program uh give them some time to finish looking at their uh their uh uh looking at their program and i just put on there too that uh those were the bullet points that we were uh we wanted to kind of consider the decrease decrease the impact on the district 308 staff prioritize our students keep costs for the district at a minimum and kind of maintain the flexibility through a rental agreement we've not put anything like that together and that's what i'd like to explore further is uh renting out the facility and making sure that our revenues and expenditures would be commensurate with what we need to maintain the facility and that's the information i have to present to the board tonight so i'd be entertain any questions or thoughts that the board has at this time yeah lori i have a few the first is how did the parents of the delta swim team feel when you brought those these options before them uh you know what i had i had the coaches survey the staff but it was more specifically about uh the feedback that we were getting were more on the program the support that they want from the coaches and the kids so you didn't ask the swim parents no okay so thank you for that yeah um what happens so here's where i'm kind of going with this one i suspect that it's probably the most expeditious on our end option to take what you're recommending which is the current coach on staff but there's some concerns with that um in that you know the reasons that i'm hearing from you to go with the current coach staff are that they that you can write into the contract that they'll prioritize 308 students my guess is you can write that into any contract with any club that would come in right we could okay so that has nothing to do with it then so that leaves us with their current familiarity with the current swimmers um but we don't know that the parents would stay with those coaches because we haven't asked them well i think the fact of the matter is that the the parents had an opportunity to change um swim clubs and they they knew what was going on so i do feel like i said since we started the program we did have about 15 families decide to leave and go to others so uh and we have about 130 parents that stayed with the program as well as new families that came into the program okay so i do think there's some familiarity with the current families and the coaches that are currently running but we haven't asked for the current parents that they that they would like to see this become either a privately owned club or coach owned or however it is so that's where i'm going with this is i want to make sure that we don't end up with a coach-owned rental that in one or two seasons these coaches now have left for greener pastures now we don't have coaches with familiarity we don't have any sort of scale of quality of programming because we don't own the program so we don't have any ability to say we want these standards to be maintained so that that doesn't leave for me any reasons why the current coach owned club would be better than any other privately owned club so where i'm going with that is why recommend what kind of rental at all why don't we just say we would like to put the club out for a rental and see who is interested in renting it before we make any sort of recommendation because i don't know that it's not really the it's not really the club that we're putting out for rental it's we have no i mean the pool that's what i'm saying yeah yeah the pool yeah so why would we just i mean why would we play favorites over who wanted to rent our facility when anybody anything else that we would do as a district we wouldn't play favorites and we would come in with even say kind of like if you're thinking about it like a bid we would put it out to bid and see who is interested i know that there is interest from other groups in possibly renting this we don't know if that would be better for our students or worse knowing that the park district isn't interested is the most important because we can write into that the only other reason is we have intergovernmental agreements with the park district about a lot of other facilities including our playgrounds so it would be the most expeditious probably to arrange it that way but they're not interested so that being said with i don't i don't disallow that we should be looking at the rental at all i just don't think we should be letting that determination be made at this preliminary state well and i i think one of the one of the concerns that we had too was number one is time so we're looking at transitioning in february so we're looking at doing it fairly quick but also the rental agreement you're right but they're not they don't have a privately owned coach club right now so doing it in february that gives those coaches about six weeks including a holiday season to create yep financial they're ready to go legal things so let's say usa swimming is the organization that oversight right dr petsky thank you so much but let me finish my question which is that did you start negotiations with them on this with the understanding that this would be what you recommended no do they have any expectation that they will be the people who own the club that will be renting this pool that we have for rent they would need to they were told that if they wanted to continue a relationship they would have to take responsibility for the business of the swim team all we would be doing is renting the facility so if we have to pay for somebody to or to manage the facility for facility supervision as a rental how is that different from an aquatics director because you'd said in the aquatics director we stopped doing it because of budget right but if we need to have somebody there to supervise the facility anyway well what we would be doing not an aquatics director this would be like our current rentals right now there would be a custodian that would be paid to be on site that we would build into the rental agreement that makes sense so can last question can you explain to me why you chose not to ask the parents what they thought of this well i i didn't feel it was our position to ask all of the parents who who would you like to have a privately owned club or would you like to have a district run club i don't see how their they can they can they can vote by making choices um but to have them involved in that decision that's really the school districts i think the challenges that were we were faced with we were put in a position where we were asked to you know number one what are other districts around us doing what is the what's the status quo around us and the fact the matter is that people are going to facility rentals and not in the business of running uh an elite swim club i i don't have that kind of expertise so when i got here and found out that the business office hey you also got a swim club congratulations uh well what are other people in the area doing thank you and uh you know and again this kind of respects like you said the the my recommendation just comes from a place of we do have we do have a variety of rental options to us but who's been there who's put the time energy and effort in and who should have an opportunity if that opportunity doesn't pan out the flexibility one of the rental agreements gives us is only has to be a two or three year rental agreement and then we switch and and we can rent to someone else at that time too so okay so eugene had some too i i feel that we were put in in a position to take responsibility for a program that we should have already been having responsibility over and we weren't and without discussing how that came about one of my concerns with the proposed your recommendation is one of the things you listed as a benefit which is the fact that current the current coaches have been with the program for so long and there are reasons that they now had to take over um i i have huge concerns about that and i would never vote yes for that um i don't know them at all but it's um i just i feel that if if we had something like an aquatics director obviously that would shift responsibility for said program to someone who is qualified to handle such things and if run correctly that position would pay for itself i mean i don't know how familiar obviously you're not familiar with swim teams and huge opportunity for making money huge in all kinds of ways from fees for students program fees to meet fees to running meets and charging for heat sheets and concessions and events and like there's an opportunity like when you say you know potential revenue lost without having an aquatics director in my opinion that is a huge opportunity for revenue loss if we don't have someone and i appreciate the work that you put into this and i appreciate that you know you feel under a time crunch because we want to serve the families that are currently in the program and it's a huge deal to these kids and their families who have invested tons of tons of time into a sport that they love and i don't i don't want to shortchange them either and so i appreciate that you want to do this in a timely manner but i also feel like it's so important that we do it right and we don't end up right back where we were and that would be a huge concern that i have with your recommendation i too am disappointed that we did not speak to the families or question them in any way i specifically remember suggesting that you do that the last time we had this presentation swim teams are also unlike any other sport a huge family event they require hours and hours of volunteer time by parents you cannot run a swim meet without parent volunteers doing all kinds of different things so these families are very much involved in their kids club they don't just drop them off and leave like yeah that is not how that works and don't get me wrong we did we did survey the parents we had a parent survey go out but we asked them how satisfied they were with the program just with the coaches and the program we did not ask them how would they like to be structured would they like to be coach owned or district owned that that's not this conversation okay the impression i got was that you hadn't asked the people yeah we put out i had the the coaches survey the the parents and they knew the situation so you had the coaches yeah send out the survey and take in the survey information and then sense that you didn't on to be fair parents are going to respond differently to the coaches of their kids than they are to a theoretically impartial party right it's their kids coach so you're going to say nice things because yeah i want somebody else eugene eugene well all of my questions have kind of been answered um can you speak into the mic sorry yes all of my questions have really been answered my initial question was what was i didn't see the difference between the current coach owned club and the private owned club um and i was going to ask why did why did you differentiate the two of those and i think you've answered i i i deduced why you did that but i still don't think that there's a difference based on what you you know have derived from your benefits or the concerns um i'm still taking it in my only other question is what are the implications if a decision is not made by february well um and uh and this came from all of the different owned clubs they just said that um the uncertainty if we run this in the summer time then all of the families are gonna wonder what's going on with the structure and they're all going to go out and try out for different teams and whatnot where if we do this parents can can see like hey we had a successful long season and it didn't really change the dynamic it was still the program that they signed up for that they expected that they've they've had experience with and and if it was not successful then they could vote with their feet and try out at different clubs but even the even the other private owned facilities we said they would prefer to do this in february where they can at least have that current team have that experience rather than having everyone try out and having a whole turnover of the team potentially and they they feel uh everyone that i talked to felt that they would they would they would run the program successfully and that people would choose to stay there's a lot of our conversations talked about you know the facility that we have here and the location of other families and clubs and things like that um and it's a convenient location and because of where it is it does draw a lot of students a lot of student participation all right i'll just i'll just say my questions that i wrote down before and then you don't have to answer them but i just want to be on record my first question was uh given the reputation of our program do the current coaches have the ability to coach elite athletes and then secondly is what if what if if we chose or went with your recommendation what would prevent coaching or ownership to change and then they just then become a and just like another privately owned club that's what they would be yeah they would be their own it would be our coaches they would develop the club and they would own it we would just rent the facility to them and that's what made me say then it's really just another privately owned club but it is i think what i tried to respect here on this slide was to say that our coaches have been involved for many years and they've given a lot of time energy and effort to developing that program to working with those parents so as opposed to another another club coming in just like i went to the park district first are you guys interested in this we have different partnerships then i went to our coaches they put in you know quite a bit of time into this program and i i respect that commitment in that relationship and i feel that we know them they know our facilities and that should account for something um and then i've had other private clubs talk to me about uh i'm interested in the program as well jen i have a question about um decreased um i'm sorry decreased impact on the 308 staff how much staff does this actually affect well and that's the thing is um that's the thing it's between right now it you know it's if there is a problem what we experienced was the problems go to the coaches the problems them go to uh sometimes the athletic directors involved with the schools and then it gets to the district staff where we now have to navigate what exactly is the problem understand that so in both running the club but then also the financial oversight you know i don't know the first thing about um about the running a meet running a competition and then there's a circulation that's come to my attention there's an opportunity for us to run regional meets and regional competitions and right now all the coaches take on that responsibility and uh and there are opportunities but in the time that i've done the financial studies and looked at the numbers you know we've we've not made it we've not made enough money in the time that i've seen with our revenues and expenses to afford the coaches we had let alone now we took those salaries and that where we were paying for coaches we were able to now bring the uh we were able to pay for the three coaches and now we would be looking at bringing on an athletics director the the expenditures and the revenues that i've seen with the program have not come close to allow us to afford that option and that's why i go back to maybe that's why the first few years when we had the program those conversations about when we did have an aquatics director they didn't at the time they didn't see that as the most efficient model so another option came up and uh and we ended up going with a kind of a homegrown organization or a homegrown model now that we're looking at changing it we need to really be cognizant of the the revenue the expenditures the time and the commitment it takes to run a competitive swim program and then are the three coaches also educators uh no this uh two of them this is all they do one of them is a counselor for a school district okay so my i have two then comments those were my questions number one whatever decision is made by the board or collectively i just want to make sure that our students do not um the effect of that decision does not hurt them any more than or disrupt them anymore that they have been this year they've they've gone through a lot so i want to make sure that but also do we as a board have a policy with this with this type of um partnership a vendor policy or how we go about that to help direct this because if we don't then i think that should be our first discussion thank you backing off of that i i actually think that that speaks to a broader topic of rentals we have a theater director we have two theaters we have some staff involved with that we do extensive rentals there we have a field house we rent last i checked i think rob allison is responsible for all of those things not the pool yeah um but the other rentals of the spaces so i i think it would be worth a look at the policy we have on rentals all together yes to see where our staff are being as you said best utilized for revenue we don't want to we just got out of budget cuts we don't want to be doing things because we don't think about it my only concern i i think i agree with the concept of going with the rental i think that that's the way to go i don't agree with us playing favorites by not saying we are renting this space and having other clubs haven't or other parent groups maybe there are loyal parents that would like to form a parent-owned club they just didn't know it was an option but until they've been given the chance you should drive this decision i don't yeah and i don't know that we should be going with any specific rental thing at this time but the concept of rental would be great yeah latonya okay so i think you answered my question because the last time we had this conversation i asked the question as to whether or not um the you know the physical education programs um and whatever other means of revenue we were receiving did that um was that enough to cover the cost and you said no you're saying that the model that is the aquatic director was not a model that was going to sustain this pool and all that it requires to sustain to to maintain it right it it is cost prohibitive it would take an additional about an additional 90 to 100 000 of revenue that we do not have so and my question piggybacks latonya's in that the you said that since you've been looking at it we have not made a profit on this program but did you just look at this year no or have you looked at the past five years how did you do that auditing process looked at the past 10 years okay and took a look at what we were what our expenses and revenues were based on the structures that we had in place so over the last 10 years we've had some years where we've been able to cover those maintenance costs and we've had some years where we have not had made the amount of money to cover the pool maintenance costs so it's been very erratic over the years and uh um and i have not gone back past 10 years though sure that's probably not necessary so i do i'm sorry i do remember the last time you made the presentation and we were looking at this current model i believe you had indicated or we saw on the screen that we were netting like 35 000 at the end of the day like when it was that was that was the amount of money that we could use the amount of money from the program that could be put towards pool maintenance and things of that nature it takes about 32 to 36 thousand dollars and then on top of that we were we were bringing in about an additional you know five or ten thousand so we we would have about forty two thousand dollars that we could dedicate towards pool maintenance and and things of that nature and did that figure include the salary yeah the the previous person who was running that program yeah you know what i have i have a i have a question i want to just interject um the question is do do we want do we want to be in the swim club business or do we want and then or do we want to bid a bit out to take over us to take over our club to rent our facility is that what i'm is that what i'm hearing i just want to i just want to make sure that okay could you clarify that what you're thinking rory sure i'm just me but yeah in my mind yeah i i think that having and full disclosure we our family has been part of this club and it is an amazing club there um there are great coaches there are great families as ruth said very very very dedicated it takes a whole family there's nothing that we experienced as a family that would ever be any concern um to us as parents having our child in the program that being said um i don't think that the school district should be in charge of a swim club i i don't think we're in charge of clubs for other sports they have parent groups or other organizations in charge of those that use our facilities i think swimming should be the same i also know that we keep correct me if i'm wrong but i believe we keep the this building staffed 24 hours a day because of having a pool on site is that part of it having a cut have the third shift third shift custodial crew yeah well actually we uh i i'd have to look into that it was my understanding that the the three coaches opened and closed their facilities so i don't know i'd have to say but in the whole building we do yeah we do we that was how i thought it was explained to me um i might be wrong you'll know more about that when you look into it i i don't believe that we should it i don't know if it's bidding but just the fact of the matter is i i don't like the idea of saying we're gonna rent it but we're gonna pick who we're gonna rent it to without checking around and seeing who comes forward so if we have a period of time when i don't know if that means a bidding process in your words or what that would mean i'm just me but i just don't think we should decide without making it available to other people that might like to create a club as well you know when i and i understand that and i understand what you're saying dr sproul because that what is it that we want to do who who do we want to be do we want to be in the business of owning a swim club and this is an anomaly this is not something that exists anywhere else in our district this is just this thing and i think i understand the context of it is because we built a school with a swimming pool and then somebody after we decided to do all that then we said oh but how are we going to pay for it so so then we came up with all of these iterations of how we were going to pay for it and now we're here so are we in agreement that we don't want to be in the swim club business i saw it head snatting is that correct i have a few questions but that's okay but yeah i would say yes um uh dr petsky did you talk to any other private clubs to see if there was interest yeah i did and they've uh uh people have reached out to us so ever since this happened uh people have uh the day it happened people were calling us finding out about opportunities or if they wanted how they could help us so yeah um i'm 100 on board with lori and really what everybody has said tonight that yes renting it out makes sense i the district should not in my opinion the district should not own us a swim club that's not what we do um and i i agree if we were going to get um a capital project done or something we would get three bids um in addition the you know wanting to prioritize our 308 students again that could just be in the rental agreement um [Music] yeah i just those that's my two cents i think maintenance costs could be part of the rental agreement too so that yes yeah clean up and keep in mind this is again when i put this together too you know like i said the the district has familiar with the coaching staff the coaching staff has familiar with the facilities looking at other districts and what they do there's kind of a standard rental agreement for the pool so it's really putting together that rental agreement and i could certainly do that and talk to other districts and say you know how have you you know what are the kind of pros and cons that you've experienced with these rental agreements we also have resources people who have been running that program for years and years they know the facility they know the the business and uh we've been working with them and like i said we have a relationship with them so it just occurred to me that with based on that relationship and that willingness to work with the district that you know we could put together a rental agreement and i don't i don't know how we would go out i mean to say that we would actually go out to bid on who would give us the most money for a rental agreement i've never done that before and i'm not saying well i think we could i apologize laurie no that's okay that's all i say i think we could reach out to these other clubs that contacted us before and see if there's still interest i would think that these clubs um some of them have probably competed in our pool before right and i would think that they know they know the business um the other piece is this this february piece is much i do not want these families to be in a bad position any more than they have but in what's right for the district this is a long-term decision and i would really hate to see us rush it for what's most convenient that is actually not the best for us in the long term you know you know and i i guess putting this together my only thought on that matters would create more inconsistency because then right now it's the delta program and we have 138 140 families who are involved so if we were to if we were saying well we're going out to rental and we'll find out who wants to rent it and then it kind of creates a little disruption like who who is it this way it's like well oh it's the coaches they they formed this business there it would be less uh less disruption so i apologize if i made any assumptions no i can see why you went down this this road um here's what i'd like to see added um i like i can appreciate that a bunch of coaches want to start a program but i also want them to be insured and i want them to background check their calls oh that's uh absolutely given yeah yeah and you do have a policy it's policy eight colon 20 community use of school facilities that discusses the authority ten-turn to rental agreements in this uh what what this team has done what i mean what they do they're the national group that i was going to say lori the national group who runs this the usa swimming they actually have a whole a whole resource section on so you want to run a pool club what do you do when it talks about all the resources how to do it filling out the forms being affiliated with them and all of our coaches have done that our our coaches have actually been you've heard the term like a level four coach we've had level four coaches they just haven't paid the money to continue that level four status their only level three status at this point so they've been through that whole process with usa swimming's and they're they're very knowledgeable um and i can appreciate that you really i'm sorry sorry i thought you were not adding more words sorry about that um i can appreciate that this is your preference i can appreciate that and i can appreciate why and i can appreciate that you've spent a lot of time in conversations with people um about it but given the disruption we've already caused to families you said you know maybe there's 15 families that leave but we had an auditorium full of families that were very concerned about what was going to happen with this program i don't want to be making any premature decisions just for their benefit we need to we've heard a lot from a lot of families about this topic it it feels that we just need more conversation but i can understand where you're coming from and that this is definitely your preference so what would the board like us to behave for next steps because i i'd be honest i'm a little confused because running the pool is one thing but what do we do with our current team because we can't rent pool to our current team because we own the team so i just want to i just want help me out just so yeah right so here's a question that i have because i was actually just going to ask something very similar to that in is it the plan of these coaches to just purchase delta aquatics from the district in theory couldn't anybody put together a proposal to purchase the team from the just like right they're our parent owned and run yes that's one group okay so is that what you were gonna say yeah because there may very well be because some clubs are organized in a lot of different ways coach owned is one way coach owned while it was school district owned we generally had a coach owned club we didn't have a parent board there wasn't anything like that there are also parent board swim clubs that exist all over um that have rental agreements as well we don't know that the swimmers that were disrupted by before i don't know if if they want to create a parent club to be undisrupted i don't know that because we haven't heard if those conversations have happened who they've happened with or any more details so if i'm wondering if if we're negotiating the sale of a club or if we're strictly saying we're no longer going to have a club it's open to anybody who wants to rent the pool but what would we be selling i was going to say to clarify that we're not selling delta aquatics what we're doing is like there is no money to be made by saying that here you get this swim club and and what it's it's worth this much what we're doing is we're saying who has a who has the authority to run a swim club who would like to rent our facility based on their credentials of running a swim club and then they would uh and we could negotiate and rent the facility and run that but the implications of that is still that delta aquatics goes away and and the parents will have to then make a decision on where their kids will go even with a coach on club even with the coach yeah and and to you to your point too a coach owned club is kind of a misnomer that's why i call it current coach owned it's just you're right eugene it's there's private clubs and this would be a current coach private club yeah that would have the opportunity to rent the facility and so to your point dr sparling it will remain status quo until we make a decision about what will be and then at that point parents would have to make a decision on what they will do whether they stay with the whatever we then establish and whoever rents our facility or if they decide to go to a different club okay and that is through the rest of the school years is that my understanding will remain march season goes through july or we'll go through august they take they take august off so it's the end of july they take august off and then they start up in september again so the next you wouldn't want to do this in say june you would do this in february or you would make the switch in after summer into july at the end of july beginning august whatever it ends up being and that's what was expressed to me just by the three different groups i talked to as they said that the the parents already established in the short season they're already swimming in a facility with a team they're already together might as well allow that transition to happen in a february when they would still stay together as a team and if they didn't like that team experience the way that was run then in the summer they would have an opportunity to try out for different teams so if we go beyond february then we have to make sure that all of the things that we put up there that are concerns and challenges that we have a strategy in place in order to make sure that there's oversight and supervision until if we don't do it in february and we don't we don't decide to do until july or august that we have whatever's needed in place to make sure that we're doing what's necessary until the transition happens yeah i don't think there would be anything nothing would change until july or august do with what we just said no we would maintain the delta swim club face through 308 is what we're doing now and come up with with options that we've discussed today correct correct which is driven by board policy correct thank you for the conversation anything before we move on okay um can i have a motion to approve the bills for payment please i make a motion to authorize the payment of bills in the amount of one million seven hundred and seventy two thousand three hundred and fifty one dollars and eighteen cents as presented second mrs croner hi dr marino aye mrs johnson aye mr gatewood aye mrs swanson by mrs doyle aye mrs simultan aye motion passes 7-0 8.2 approval of no trespass order um do we need to have discussion before i make a motion yes yes okay feel free whoever would like to kick us off here sure um i'll kick it off i guess since we were told we can't deliberate in closed session we did hear from some witnesses in the incident our discussion now is what we think if do we want to approve what the principals have recommended do we want to address something a little more expanded is is it a different timeline my only concern would be talking about um extracurricular events school activities the time frame that they recommended yeah i would like to honor the parents requests that it go through the end of the school year just as um what i say god bless you oh um honor the parents request to go through the end of the school year um as was requested also by the principal i have that question too i don't know if we're on the same page with that as far as wanting this person to be able to attend extracurricular or concerns about attending my i guess my concern would be to extend it to to later behind p.m i agree yeah not even a specific time i think it's even yeah just uh and if you if we do say a time it would be until until 9 00 pm or after the event whichever is the latest you know but it's some way i wasn't sure if we had to give a time since that was what was in there but i don't think yeah if we just say no yeah you know no on school property you know given that this was an incident related to a parking situation and student driving around the parking lot or whatever um to me it would feel like that happens again when people are leaving games we have a lot of kids sleeping from games too and it could be this similar a similar kind of event and if that's a trigger then our students don't need to miss that that situation could happen at any time agree did we have to check if the individual [Music] wanted to be here or anything like that because we they were in their notice given an opportunity to waive the hearing they did not waive the hearing um so but they are not here but they were aware that the hearing was tonight and we can address the one individual by their name yes not the okay yes so okay thank you i just want to make sure i'm not messing up who can do what okay and is this just for um the specific high school is just all school grounds that's a good question does mrs casper have any students at other schools i don't believe so the recommendation only said but we could choose if we wanted to to extend it i don't believe that she has another student in the district but if if there are extracurricular activities oh and there's an away game or or something else that's what i mean right like across town or correct and that she said that she wasn't aware of whether or not there were extracurricular activities or he or that student was involved in them so we i think was somebody going to check on that or i think she said she was going to check on it well yeah yeah one second suggestion i have perhaps if you're interested is uh to to have the no trespass order for whatever period of time length in this school day or or at any period of time uh during the school year and then perhaps have a caveat unless uh permission is granted by the school principal so for instance that would allow her to come on for meetings as a parent uh parent conferences etc or other meetings that perhaps have to happen but you know with the express permission of the principal uh as a caveat to whatever you're doing i think that's a problem i don't want it to be written i do too but i'd want it to be written permission yeah written permission because one of the things that i brought up was how do you restore a relationship if there is no relationship if there is nobody right then it's not going to happen and i think you know i'm fine with um into the end of the school year but i think that there needs to be some communication with them proactive right something in place to try and attempt to restore and build communication yes yeah the only other sorry the only other um i guess concern i have is when we're talking about extracurricular and things like that i just want to make sure that we don't um that this child is not penalized right for his parent you know parents reaction and parents behavior and that's that's my only concern there yeah which is why i like the idea of permission from the principal yeah because that gives the family a way to say hey listen my child wants to go to this and or is a player right exactly or something yeah yeah and i need to drive him there or right whatever no it makes sense exactly yeah that's my only concern you know yeah well and we want to make sure like latonya said that we are working on a restorative relationship with school leadership and the parent and so forth it's incredibly important for the mental health of the the students that were involved and her son so and just for the point of conversation because i think we're blankingly saying yes we agree with it but i just want to just put it out there let's imagine that this incident happened between students what would the consequence be how long in the duration of the consequence and should we even consider it and if not why is it different in this situation well i think part of the reason it's different is because it was a parent to a student and for for me no parent really has the right to do that to a student so 100 just needed us to say it on record yes i agree because if it was student and student it probably you know potentially what three days yeah well or sometimes students are are given an order that they can't attend extracurricular events in the school for this year probably not to the end of the you think for the entire year possibly yeah yeah sometimes yeah there are social suspensions correct and sometimes they're referred to a different building yeah true yeah okay so i just wanted to clear up when we're talking about restoring relationships we're not talking about restoring relationships where they didn't exist between the students families and the universe right right relationship right we're not going to be trying to gather all the families to be friends now no thank you between people i'm sure they would all you know but if they want to do that on their own have a say in whether they wanted to create that or not that's not what we're talking about um so my question is to you maureen um how do we move forward as far as an approval if there are changes we want well no one's made a motion yet so someone has to make a motion um that's why i'm asking yeah so i'm gonna just do i need to revise i i make a motion to amend it well nothing's been there's been no emotion oh right so the motion could be and i'm just gonna throw this out here based on what i've just heard um and i'm not making emotions so right gotcha let's a motion to um prohibit um miss casper from being on school on oeh or any school property within the district i i kind of understand about that crosstown thing that would be my only concern so and i believe there's you did you just confirm there's just the one child there's just the one child the high school student so um just high school events could could we add the extracurricular thing to be district-wide and just the regular school day obviously would just be here at this school so um prohibition from being on the campus of oswego east high school um during regular school hours when students are present or just take out regular school hours because it's good yesterday yeah approving this as discussed with the change as amended per discussion we're gonna we're gonna create a motion together okay and then you're gonna say it all right that's my yeah here we go um so prohibited from being on the campus of oswego east high school when students are present can we just put sd 308 facilities well and and i also want to clarify we're not talking about board meetings and the individual will be would be certainly entitled to attend board meetings because it's not a student we wouldn't want to infringe on somebody who's going to participate that would be one of the caveats okay that's not a student activity so you it could be any school facilities and or district 308 events including those occurring at other on other school property so that would be at other school districts yeah through the 21 22 school through the end of the 21 22 school year except to attend school board meetings and with the written permission of the principal correct yes okay ursula i see you typing furious can we push that motion to the last one so she has an opportunity to type and i can refresh is that possible i make a motion to move item 8.2 to be after item 8.8 seconds okay miss kroner hi mrs johnson aye dr marino aye mr gatewood aye mrs swanson aye mr storyal aye mrs simonton aye motion passes seven zero okay so just let me know when to refund dr moreno may we would read each policy in its entirety to give her the extended amount of time just as much as she needed i thought i'm trying i would like to say that can we pull um five colon one zero from the approval five colon one zero yes yep do you need to pull it or were you going to amend a couple words in it well a motion to amend item eight point three to remove item five we don't have the policy with the policy committee we we just kind of made some general we didn't write a specific policy but again it could be there can be several uh things happening at the same time so some of the policy what is proposed here can is a legal update yeah and that the board could approve that and then okay and then ask the policy committee to take oh to do another one yeah okay okay so but i guess my question would be what is it well we will i will email you what i to the notes that i took of what our recommendations okay would be yeah it wasn't like yeah okay it wasn't the latter so we're like we're pulling that one yeah it's nothing like we're not playing all right hold on let me mark it um and then the other one that i had was six colon 145 is on here that was one that we asked for clarification on and it was a typo we had asked at the policy committee about the word in informal and it was supposed to be informational so that's been fixed okay that's great that's in here thank you and we were good with that as long as that was fixed okay cool okay so we don't have to change that we do not okay okay so we can move on for emotion 8.3 i make a motion to approve the following board policies section 1 school district organization 1 colon 2-0 section two school board two colon one zero two column three zero and two colon one three zero section five general personnel five colon one zero section six instruction six colon one zero zero six colon one four five six colon one six zero and six colon two three five as well as six colon two six zero section seven students seven colon two two zero and seven colon two eight zero second mrs swanson aye mrs simonton aye dr marino aye mrs croner aye mr gatewood aye mrs dorel aye mrs johnson aye motion passes 7-0 can i have a motion to approve the resolution to issue not to exceed 18 000 working cash fund bonds actually more than 18 000 maybe a little more than that that's what my 18 million sorry it says 18 000 on here all right i make a motion to adopt a resolution declaring the intention to issue said school district and directing that notice of such intention be published in the manner provided by law second mr gatewood hi mrs johnson hi mrs doyle no mrs swanson no dr moreno aye mrs simultan 2021-12-07 Western Connecticut Planning Region, CT YouTube / hatters tv transcript source: youtube Danbury City Wide PTO December 6, 2021--The video will be up… · passage 1
so we've challenged back the district can we now revert back to our table process that we used to serve through kids with glory is next friday this friday with student groups there we've met with uh each family liaisons at collectively through the groups and then we met with the parents group as well we heard a lot of criticism compliments comments a lot of things that parents didn't know a lot of things they didn't know as well we heard a lot of curses and compliments so we're not going to be able to get it off the screen unfortunately um so we're going to kind of modify the style of it um in the attendance list is there a list of emails that we can also send on a backup does a presentation do as well so that everyone can see it if [Music] a little while ago it's been awesome to see everybody on facebook but okay want to talk a little bit about what we do as a team along with all of the many service staff that your kids save every day so we provide meals obviously i suppose but we also kind of take off the weight of making sure that safety protocols are followed along with like regulations and guidelines and all of that we like to engage with the community obviously here and we've done a couple committees and whatnot so that's kind of how we as a company want to come to danbury we also there's a big part of it is making sure we're in line with like health care professionals so i'm constantly talking to all the nurses and making sure come to do you know any special requests because i completely understand everyone is so specific and there's pig eaters and there's you know special requests that need to be uh um we also have regulations which i'll get in a little bit more because that's the part really that we wanted to share with you all because that's not something that's typically known i mean even as a dietitian before i started this job i didn't i knew the baseline obviously but not really the nitty-gritty of it so i wanted to share a little bit with you guys all community wants and needs that's why we're here to talk to you all and see you know as much as we can think about what they want we never really know until we hear from all of you and as well as like time management the classic any same as any management of food service has to get taken into account so this is how essentially the regulations are broken down so it starts up at the usda as every government you know regulation starts says the department of agriculture and then it comes down to the connecticut state department of education so they also oversee all the regulations in schools make sure the plates are filled with all the nutrients that your kids could need and they're not getting too much so that's the flow of coming all the way down to danbury of course so you might be familiar with the my plate diagram i don't know it's been out for a while now since michelle obama and so this is our new not new this is our tool i guess to look at portioning and things like that so although this is the basic part of it you have you know your five components to a meal there's nutrients that we both me and me specifically focuses on as well it has to make sure they're in ranges so you know the state is happy with us so some of the nutrients that we do are like sodium so that's listed first because it is probably the toughest to get around because if you cook at home you know that salt is just what really gets a dish to be good and it also kind of stops us from sometimes using packaged things which can be good and bad because you know we need the longer shelf life and things like that so sodium is a huge nutrient that we kind of have to focus on and make sure it's in a range sugar is also on that carbohydrates all that good stuff protein we do calories down to it's really very um fine-tuned so even like the types of vegetables you have to make sure that there's colors of each one so you have dark green you have red orange yeah it's very specific and they call it a rainbow plate for a reason so it gets very time consuming but you want to make sure that the kids are getting all that they need okay so we this has been kind of a big topic within our office is increasing communication so we want to kind of have an open floor for dialogue and the times obviously have the past two years have been crazy as we all know and so it's been ever more prevalent to have you know open communication open dialogue so there's been a lot of um struggles with supply chain barriers and issues and things like that to the point of you know we might have to do last-minute changes to the menu and i know that sometimes the kids might come home and say oh i this what i got surface that was on the menu and we do really you know apologize and try very hard to get what's on the menu to be out because you know that's what we had planned for but sometimes it comes down to the morning of we'll get a call after it should have been delivered and they'll say oh we didn't drop it off it's like oh my goodness like what do you mean you didn't drop it off so you know it's been a little tricky to navigate that but what we've found is making sure that we're communicating that with you all and communicating that with the nurses and the staff everything like that is pretty much the best way to go about it if any of you have any you know input on that as well we would love to hear it um but yeah so our main way of doing that is actually through a texting service so if you go to the danbury website or the danbury school lunch website it looks kind of like this and then on the right yeah the right there's gonna be like a little texting service thing and so if you click that and it'll sign up it'll ask you to text a certain number and then that's kind of how we really um let you know if any menu changes maybe if there's any seasonal updates or like sneak peeks to menus that's how we communicate best all right and then lastly we just wanted to see like we want to tell you how you guys can help as well and we want to say that recipes we can be creative so these regulations don't necessarily have to be super restrictive there's ways where you know we can sub in different things or maybe exclude a little bit of salt and things like that but we want to see the recipes that you guys are cooking at home or that are your kids favorites because we can find ways of fine-tuning that and making it work for our staff for our equipment supply all that so recipes and ideas or even just like a vegetable idea i'm constantly think trying to think of ways to get kids to eat vegetables and so always hearing things like that are awesome um relaying any feedback from the kids because as much as we'd like to be in there 24 7 hearing what the kids are doing and how they like the food we're unfortunately not always able to hit every school so we really rely on you guys to hear how they're doing and what they think um and then encouraging there's some new meals on there and for example when we met with charlotte yes they we spoke about having added plantains to the menu and that actually was on the december menu and the kids loved them we got uh chickens drumsticks plantains and rice and beans on the secondary schools yes i'm like trying to remember all the menus and separate them all but yeah so we had that and it was probably one of our most popular days so we do try and find ways to integrate things onto the menu but encouraging students you know to try new things because kids are so picky and it can be really really challenging as a parent as a teacher i know like it makes their day when they come in and they see something that they can they're excited to eat so encouraging them oh try something new oh this is on the menu it's really helpful to us and hopefully helpful to the kids to get all the nutrients that they need and then lastly we will have some committees we talked a little bit about um you know establishing new ones coming up or ones that already exist so taking those opportunities to kind of become engaged in the community with us is also super helpful so yeah and then there's our emails and contact info so we'll definitely send it out i can also give it at the end if anybody needs it any cards or anything so there any questions oh i mean go ahead yeah i just think so it sounds like when coven came around that's when maybe the quality if you will shifted quite a bit and it's you're saying if i understand quickly it's because of the packed items first being able to just you know the line serving right so you're asking to return to that other model and so where are we at with that so we met with kevin wallston superintendent just about a week ago at this point okay and we presented in the fact that high school the students are overwhelmingly happy where we used to serve 1200 or so meals in a short hour and a half period we're serving to have 1700 students so they're overwhelmingly happy with the pre-package from our point of view yes i speak no un-packaging yes and that that change has dramatically increased the flow of students coming in to receive meals um the numbers on all of our stations have increased well over 12 to 15 to 20 in some locations depending on what the meal is and it's it's made a big change we actually met with a group of um what we kind of call similar to like the student board of directors kind of thing and it's it spans all four grades so we met with several freshmen sophomores juniors and seniors um and the feedback almost right out of the gate was that they they were already happier with where things were versus where they were prior when everything was in a bag and that was unanimous amongst everyone in the group and even you know said that though this is what our friends are saying so it was it was a pretty a pretty unanimous statement from them so where are we at with the remaining schools so as i underspark is currently operating the same fashion okay we are going to be meeting with the principal tennis court yep we hope west side will follow suit and we've gotten some pushback from the elementary schools from the principals because it's certainly not our position to stand in the way the principal wants something done differently in each individual school we kind of bow to there i think elementary schools are also still eating in the classroom that is correct which is probably hard we can serve they can still take it i'm not even so concerned about where where the kids eat i'm really concerned about what they get and if they if they take more i'm happier because i know they're they'll eat at them so we've spoken to a good number of principals yeah at rogers park they're just at regular tables like this it's true the timing is also their choice like yeah at west side they do like 15 minutes and that's it whereas rogers you can sit and eat until you're done and then choose to go outside or not it's always a little bit different timing was a very big a very very big issue going into this year a lot of principals reworked many of their schedules several variations of it to accommodate for it because there are safe guidelines that do require a certain period of time for students to be able to eat from start to finish so trying to fit those mandates in as well as making sure that teachers have you know lunch period needs to be 20 minutes right and then you have 50.

basically and so we've had several teachers and i retired at that time then we came back a few years later i can't remember how many teachers came back um and yes it's legal we had attorney advice and we did uh your general or other monthly general article our largest plus the law once said you can work half time for a year for two years out for a year uh mango he's an experienced math teacher from the philippines he interviewed very well he is working with an agency in new york i would probably take it would take some time probably two months at least maybe three months for him to be here um he has a blessing with his uh principal and school district they use that tournament in the philippines um it was sent electronically so he didn't have anywhere that he could sign it scan it back okay you said it might be it's up to the philippine embassy how when they want to schedule it and when they want to send his passport to come over and right now code is still alive and well in the philippines and so the embassies are working at a slower speed than they typically live because they're there the next item is going to help address that if it doesn't i'll try to answer your question um the second math teacher um kevin wolfgram kevin is apparently residing in california um um he is a retired teacher in california he's been retired for almost maybe six months to a year uh he realizes that he would like to give like institutions and there will be a benefit to the empty states that it's all long enough from the stage over five years he can be fully vested in arizona's retirement system uh he will make substantially less money here than he made california but possibly against substantial address um again dr jim bolstein interviewed uh we were impressed um we can do this because we put in the uh sr3 grant extra math teacher and extra english language like engineering because we've talked about this for over a year our job last year is to keep students safe but in my professional opinion online education was necessary but it's not as good as sitting face to face with a good teacher and so some of our students didn't work to the potential and we're worried about them not getting ready to age vice so we'd already put this mr wolfgram uh when i talked to him in our inquisition last week on behalf of the board i said you know the board of women the hiring on wednesday i said can we count on you being here when it breaks up i don't see how you can do this but he said we're hiring wednesday night i'll be here monday morning so that's fantastic that kind of addresses the issue we have with kevin connect's uh vacancy and so we'd have an experienced teacher rock and roll he won't have certification he had their own apartment he's taught about 17 years in california um the next one i have governor bolts to talk with teaching staff is writing tutoring next spring in the past we have tried to do this using title one monies our arizona state tutoring grant depends on the state and the year and this isn't our state department uh we're using again we're using uh best or three monies for this and we want to start as soon as we can in january after school will be monday tuesday and thursday evenings afternoon just like we've done in the past wendy doesn't work well good very dismissable friday's not realistic because people uh students and teachers both have other things on your mind over the weekend so we're recommending mary chu beltran carolyn rodriguez susan islands tonight jennifer keller uh rayleigh romigo melendres maynard paris doctors in the audience to see alice cadiz richard brigadone april cavaliero the math teacher kelly aaron khan and addie one person special education with primary grades dr pamela david cruz and i'll i'll change the agenda item and have a new one on wednesday so again we have to pay 25 an hour so we'd like to tutor for um three hours after three hours a week i hope we can get a good turnout like one of the things that dr cabulge and staff are looking at us trying to identify kids that have a high need right now that aren't successful with their grades but that way they may be successful they may understand why they're great they gotta get those kids up to speed uh i believe that's what we're going to work on again is 25 an hour i will work with the county i'm going to talk to drivers tonight um about busing uh i think it's unethical to have this just for our old residents we have to provide this with pima county students as well and so that can get another cost of the county if we have two drivers leaving here after school and one of them's got as soon as it gets past i think kids would go back to uh to luca um depending how many students are there one bus one of the two buses can haul 80 students which is more than we typically have but some of them are we've done some things like this in the past but i mean it suffices to say it will get many necessities to change the transportation of the county and they've always been supported by doing that so we have to get that started in january are you getting them snacks or something uh we have in the past i think yeah they say they're not great and they're not so tired i think in the past all i know is like when i was 715 we would get like granola bars or little bags of like animal crackers or something yeah i think they got it from food services yeah that's the same question i agree with you i think kids are running on they need to have gas and tank too the next item unfortunately is a resignation this young lady is an rn and she came back after being in the outer country for 18 months and a couple of weeks after we hired her back for a couple of three weeks she found a nursing job in casa grande so we'd see ago she's she's good good employees with kids but she's going to be the best graduating nurse um this position is another vacated teacher's day position uh genesis magical [Music] and so that's obviously vacancy again that's a special ed she used to do it one-on-one [Music] yeah so she was short she was here about about a full month maybe a little more i'd say max in six weeks um the next uh we have two pair of pros that we want to hire to replace our vacancies obviously um debbie house and debbie right now is living in mayor arizona by the universe the metropolis of mayor and she will be recommending her name she's she's her record if you read a resume or an application and see your personality looks good so um yeah megan you're right debra house is already here megan she's a former student advice went through 10th grade here graduated in high school in cottonwood arizona she's been working with cottonwood schools as a primary aide um i did not interview her dr jabal's interview as impressed so uh she's coming back to ohio so she says we'll be here for you so hopefully that's the case which you can have here has expressed interest in being a drama class sponsor for the school year he's had one performance he's going to have another before christmas the kids the kids did a good job and we've not had a long-term drama program for a period of time so we're recommending that he be a drama sponsor he has a good rapport with students he works well with the kids business it's the business approval of the 2022 boys meeting calendar um typically we do this in december or january and i thought after a meeting the other day someone said something but i had the feeling i don't know why that it might help you to plan ahead if we did it sooner than later what i tried to do is follow a pattern some of what we have as far as the mondays and the wednesdays we have the same place of the month a couple times we have vacation zones obviously we can't do that and there's an attached calendar with the dates we january 10 if we did the first and first wednesday and first monday we had a good day to come back from the morning break that's kind of a challenge so we're looking at january 10th and 12th february 9th and 7th march i'm sorry 7th and 9th march 7th 9th april 11th and 13th may 9th and 11th july 11 13 august 8 10 september 12 and 13 uh october 12 10 and 12 november 7 9 that uploads veterans day and thanksgiving and december 5th and 7th and the september meeting in the december meeting avoided the law conference at asba sponsors in september and woods the american conference aspa an asa sponsor in the summer of each year so i'll ask you about that changes the next item on business is um why'd you approve them um i think you have in your in your backup material that's what i thought i would review this quickly tonight and then i i regret that miss burns i emailed her and said should you be out will you be on zoom on monday or wednesday so i know she works with other districts apparently they uh have her obligated tonight and wednesday night and this is something we talked about when the budget was passed last year because it was such a different financial year because of abn and we always have the budgets at the board docs in july always had a semester i should say and sometimes the grant money those don't come in in time for the budget development so we estimate based on the last several years of a budget history the budget this year the changes are good news um we have um they call it daa we used to have two forms of capital and the legislature changed it several years ago to one form ea it's called district additional assistance that is the budget line that they tried to sell to educators that was an improvement because they had more flexibility it's not it's significantly less money uh but our the month the carryover from the budget we adopted to the budget i'm hoping you folks will approve tomorrow night it's an increase of 11 152 and mmo increased maintenance and operation increased 284 421 and the total so the total increase is not sections that are decreased but overall total increase of 295 thousand 573 the increase has come from the statutory change on allocation of funds we've got 186 thousand dollars yeah 186 thousand and eleven dollars on that um we had about 109 000 less expenses than we budgeted and we had interest earned 803 that's not a good investment but it's better than a java 9 or sharp stick because we had decreases in the budget um totaled about 1300 and about 1413 we had um the va the correct additional assistance after the 2021 budget year we overestimated over calculated by 270 so we have to take that off and we had less add-on money add-ons might be carried forward ahead than we anticipated one part so that was 1143 so that's those are the changes that people ask you folks to prove and that's my recollection we have to do a budget revision december and i know we have to be like but i want i want to do this last month we didn't get it around just but i thought it was wise to get that before and then because we have more funds now because enrollment is improved do you have an idea of what our enrollment looks like now compared to what it was like before yeah we recruit we lost 80 some kids during cove and the last time i checked we had we had recouped all those kids plus a few so theoretically our adm should be in the 22 fiscal year it should be a little better than it was the year was shut down what should have been and what was that 20 something depending on which day you actually check and and again you all know um it's not how many kids we have on the 100th day or the 10th there and it's an average period of time and it's challenging for those of us who've been doing this for a few years because up until about three years ago we always based the budget on prior year attendance so we had a hard number to plan on right now we've got theoretical we don't have to do this because we're physically pre-taped or conservative some districts have had to lay off teachers during the school year because if they budgeted for a thousand students and they only had 900 to show up whoops we don't have the money unless they have good carryover from the previous year if they haven't if they haven't budgeted a lot of plans financially we have to lay off staff as your progressive just like if you have your own private business the way it is it's hard to find big classified people we have not had to do that we had one since my my time in beautiful downtown ohio we had one time where we had the rift teachers induction force and that's been 2007.

because she has allergies and she doesn't venture out yeah um but they have less than 15 minutes between the hallway gym and everything else so in other words from the time the bell rings so to speak till the bell rings again it should be 20 minutes if there's 75 children online of course the last child is not going to have 20 minutes which goes back into the timing of things making sure that it's a meal that we're able to fully function and be able to serve schools like west side who have a larger volume let's say a traditional smaller elementary like pembroke or things like that and we're able to get the food out to the kids in a timely fashion so time timing as you guys know is a major component and as still and continues to be a hurdle for the whole the whole program and then we have some schools um shout to rock small classrooms they correct uniquely 100 in the classroom not anymore not anymore that's right k2 is in the classrooms all breakfast is in classrooms k2 is in classrooms and three five is a launcher oh they are okay when did that start really it's working well if there has to be a lecture okay education looks at it's really not just all about nutrition it's really about socialization it's all about it that's their time to kind of explode if you will so to try to keep them down and tell them what to do and try to keep the heads down flip the light switches from where we sit it all goes into the pot it's not just about the hamburger it's the whole experience absolutely from the classroom yeah right so it is 20 minutes that is a state guideline uh there were many schools prior to covet that had way more time than that especially if high school their lunch period was 45 minutes we got that one we call the waves of students that come through um of about 350 400 students we served them in i think was 12 minutes 10 to 12 minutes they ate for 10 minutes and they still had a good long time to sit and socialize so that goes into the pot how our serving style does really affect the equality consumerization eating in the classroom there's just certain things that we couldn't give we heard when the students return we don't give them sloppy items don't give them the canned fruit because it's too wet and it may drip onto the table zero things like this so we were challenged to to kind of solidify and really modify what we did into what we can do and it's just carried through for the last uh year and a half now are there you mentioned the supply chains because i know my son personally does not eat the lunches but since everyone is eligible for a free lunch i we heard there was issues with running out of food getting frozen food at the high school frozen salads handed to kids and like these are high school big kids that need a lot of food and they were getting frozen items i can't answer that my office happens to be here i'm here in the cafeteria every day i don't see it happen could it be very very well killed could it be very very well chilled because again it needs to go to a classroom we actually have multiple school complaints about that meeting a couple meetings [Music] yeah we've also had reports of like leftover breakfast as part of lunch or as the lunch option um we had a lot of that yeah that's why you're here yeah but what school did you hear the chickpeas are but what school did you have and his lunch was a bag of four cinnamon rolls an apple and a milk and he's a sophomore that's much larger than i am um you know that's not enough for a kid to eat at 10 30 in the morning and has after school like if that was my son's other cross country he runs 10 miles after school but that was his lunch so we did just to reply back so we do do breakfast at the high school between seven and seven twenty businesses well i'm gonna dispute it because i don't believe that's necessarily true and i'll explain why so we do breakfast between seven and seven and twenty at high school we find very very few students take advantage of that we sat we found it very positive at rogers park they piloted a program where we offer a second chance breakfast in and around 10 o'clock i think that's what you might be referring to this was at the high school yeah yeah no no roger park did it piloted it i mean thinking back then to the high school where we at about 10 o'clock 10 30 we offer a second chance breakfast girls went up to the halls set up a couple of stations and they were able to take a breakfast at about 10 10 30.

something like that you know yes and at that time you had to bring when your rift it was last in first out and so within five years or something like that if you had growth to the point if you could use those positions yet bring the persons back the legislature two years ago so that sounds perhaps kind of callous but it's meant to keep the best teachers in the classrooms that you that leadership feels you have so we have to do it so i'm glad about that many things and that concludes the budget and then the next one is um a discussion on the collection of what there's one more thing i should go on under business and again this is partly the result of the training folks in this room and a lot of the board members had mentioned a superintendent's search and i'm that's not my bailiwick right now um but i put in a florida genuine asba consultant spoke with board on the topic of superintendent search the board may vote you use asba services for superintendent search uh so i didn't say do it because i feel like that's kind of awkward so it's up to you folks but if you wanted my opinion i said yes so i spoke with the search person in aspa on thursday after a conservative period of time the search will cost forty five hundred dollars for district yard size and add expenses to that because on the when they advertise they don't drive to the eastern seaboard to recruit teachers but they recruit some um headhunter that's my phrase like there's some companies back there to do some searching for them and then there's going to be travel expenses and so on and so forth i think in round numbers but time you pay for expenses it'd be in the neighborhood of six thousand dollars i think that's a wise investment if you want my opinion we have we have extra funds with if you improve the budget tomorrow so because you all are busy and they have a lot of experience finding people that basically just give you three echelons of candidates like here you go these are all pretty good these are okay ah you want to think about this is what i understand i've not ever been through one i'll write to my best microsoft do you know if we were to use that do we have any input on what he would come down what priorities would he have been looking for i think so yes i know here one important thing is that being a small district that's oftentimes the stepping stone into a bigger district yeah better to have somebody who's going to have some commitment to staying after a while in fact when i came here a teacher and staff i was told to say i'm tired of the board higher these guys in phoenix are going to stay here two or three years a theater may have regretted that i stayed longer i don't know but i know professionally that children in on the reservation children some economically lower rural communities inner city schools um unfortunately staff moves on faster in those environments sometimes by doing the more fluent liquids i spend the whole career work in kind of communities and i personally enjoy them and those kids feel that i've heard kids tell a story now at least get used to people when you leave and so that's one of the reasons and we hear about a candidate and is that's my understanding yes yes and um and when i if the board goes to do this i would really encourage the board to invite the guy's name steve highland i've met him i did not even put him in charge of it he's uh he's he's an attorney i don't think he's taking the bar in her zone he's also a retired superintendent and i think this guy's a doctor in that leadership and so he's been around a lot and so i would if i were to view folks i really wanted to have extra board meetings but i think part of the january forward meeting one of the january meetings or the special meeting with steve say to ask these kind of questions how do we plan because it's going to be a real important decision i'm guessing that i've not been through a superintendent before i've been through a couple of principal searches we have the panel of staff and [Music] when i came here they knew me first of all i've been here two years three years prior i've been business manager for two years and so i came in i can't remember the order i had i had a community interview panel and it was ridiculous for 25 people sitting in i felt like it was in the nuremberg trial we're staying in diamonds auditorium there's a row of 25 chairs and i was sitting there by myself hitting that plate to put a clipboard you know you don't need my where i gotta have clipboard and and i interviewed the board party for two or three hours and uh i left and the board met later that night and made a decision and i think there are four candidates i think they interviewed two of us at that time they didn't go to search my predecessor went to a national conference and recruited their national national representative the nsa national school administrators conference and recruit didn't have a lot of turnout but i think that's why i think it's valuable to use that and the superintendent before was the principal and then the superintendent right and yeah he was the principal to give you a fast history my predecessor was a gentleman named martial he came here as a principal coach football and his friend and his friend in the district was the superintendent mr olive had been the principal for one or two years the superintendent came back from vacation all of his goods and quit and up a job and he took a job in arlington which was up by that guy and uh because his wife gave back i did not was told and uh and then someone was the principal and superintendent for three years business manager i don't know that i think that's something i can't imagine that being that way and i'm sorry i will send you that recording before i leave you i apologize i'm not doing the support for the crown i know nikki willie said it would be like a training like he would come down and then like spend a couple hours or do it on zoom or whatever with the board and answer questions and walk us through the procedure and how this would go and what kind of things that we need and blah blah and how we need to structure and then they take that information and then they go and start looking for superintendents based on our input for your input not mine one of the things that nikki stressed i think pretty very strongly the four members of president can come in is to board do a work self-evaluation to kind of kind of be able to line up your values when you want a little better your needs and then and that's also a good way to start doing some long-term planning it sounded based on what he said that um the process is pretty expensive in terms of them helping us step step through it and they do they do do customization so if we were really interested in safeguarding input from certain questions stay forward i can't say for sure that they would make that happen to steve on thursday about trying to save districts and funds and six thousand dollars is i think it's six thousand dollars it's good investments and he said he'd like to he'd like to get to know you so it's hard to know someone on zoom but hey i heard from matt that he would like to have at least one face to face with the board and visit with you and get to know you a little bit and give you some some survey questions to help give young guys to give aspa guidance and then maybe subsequent meetings and we would almost have to he's the hr director the title one director he's the superintendent he's the principal is the curriculum director plus the principal plus discipline so we would have to have that kind of inclusion to let the superintendent know if he could handle all the bunches together and um one of the board members is not president had asked for this to be on here and so i i included the policy which is vca a pdf which is a board organizational meeting just as you all recall in previous years we'll have three board meetings in january two will be the same night um the current president will call the meeting to order and historically this was done called the meeting order and the board will nominate and vote on a board president if if that person whoever wins will take over the chair immediately and then also have a vote for the clerk of the board usually two officers obviously uh and then during the meeting into regular meetings so that will happen the organization name will happen the night that the the monday night after the 13th i believe no 10th but the second happy january is i'm an accountant from um and then we have a regular meeting on uh wednesday that that we had new officers um last january the procedure that's outlined here on the second page is not the procedure we followed because we were nominating the president's um if martial was nominated and then it was seconded and voted on there wasn't a chance for a second nomination before the office and that's part of why it was asked to do this case it's [Music] that i provided tonight um one is bda that's a policy that i pulled off ksba site that's been endorsed by asba that's slightly different than our existing policy that i thought might be useful to look at and possibly even adopt and then the other one that says at the top so this is ausd governing board handbook that's this is just this is something i've i created from another school or site um that describes um a procedure that another school board organization recommends i modified it a little bit to fit in with our current policy but i i just put that together as as a possible option um additionally nikki she she did speak a little bit on this the other day and what she said was that the the way we we do it they call the quick draw method it's not recommended um there are two other ways that these school boards um proceed with the organizational election um one of them is to have a pre-meeting where you basically have a discussion people you know say if you say i'm thinking of running for a president just have a discussion in general with the whole group about it maybe even come to um not necessarily a consensus but an understanding oh this person seems like they want to do it and so when we have the meeting next um that's the first one we're going to vote on okay that's kind of what i thought a nice discussion was going to be that discussion but don't know how to do it [Music] right and if we chose to change what we do that delays it because we have would you say that we change something in policy before we can change [Music] i don't think in this case it's already been approved by asba so we just needed two two readings um but certainly the other board members need to look at it thoroughly and see if they want there was going to be somebody else nominated until you'd already voted on who the president was and that was just i'm interested because the nomination was made as a motion rather than a nomination and i don't think that's the best procedure to go about unfortunately i think the quick draw that nikki mentioned has become more common than perhaps it should because being a board president is not it's kind of a thankless job and so there have been times where it's hard to find someone that wants to be more present in in tons of districts and so if they found someone you don't want to do it okay fine let's lock them in before they can change your mind yeah in our case the quick draw nothing seems to lock out to block out the possibility of another candidate in general sure and we can when we do the voting me i can put in the agenda like discussion and vote so i mean you can take as long as you want to be taking it so the other method that that nikki mentioned and that's the one that um this this election board officers she lays out that's where at the meeting itself um there's a call for nominations you can nominate someone you can self-nominate and then there's an ensuing discussion um i might talk about why i think i should be president or i might talk about why rodney i think rodney would be a great president but we know each other pretty well so you know i see having an additional meeting as not um necessary unbelief circumstances i like the idea of how what you've said but you said they have a meeting just to discuss that i don't know i don't think we were doing that a specific whole meeting for just a discussion in that meeting that's not what we started out with right so there's nikki he presented two scenarios one where there's two meetings yeah three meeting where you kind of sort everything out in advance and then you just use both at the next page this this one that i'm suggesting now is [Music] yeah i mean i know and eric eric is going to ask for this so yeah well then this one too that was a motion and a second and then a vote then this one's just the nomination there's [Music] this other policy that i pulled from asga a lot of schools have adopted this um and it's only slightly it's slightly different from ours it has the addition of it's just a procedural thing the clerk may call the meeting to order if the president is not present or no longer on the board um so that's just like an administrative thing but the significant change is the bottom paragraph where it says in addition to the organizational meaning that we're made that we're present at any time for any reason so that is a significant change so [Music] the way it's voted it would seem like if you have an issue with the president each month you could be nominating to getting the president [Music] you could hopefully but i think with us we it could have been so um i would rather not have that in them so that another president would be forced to face some of the questions that i had or as being president because it's been very difficult to operate as president when you constantly have someone telling you to leave and my oh yes your husband for one like what are you going to do about it you you shouldn't be president but that is that's not to do with the board and a board decision but maybe the board might decide to go along with him and then that's why i object to that and it's not for me because i'm not running because i'm going to be off at the end of the year that's unbelievable so um i just feel that if you should have that to protect other presidents from going through what dr dooley and i have gone through this year what protects the other presidents is that you need three people need a quorum willing to do this to children in order in order to do it that's what protects the president the challenge of that is you're you're uh stopping slopes of violations yeah board president can't call the clerk and the substitute clerk can say i need you to support them as xyz and styles right so they're going to politics they can't it's very challenging that would happen in a in a meeting um right through three board members you can't keep working there's nothing behind the scenes and decide this no no of course not but what do you speak to one board member and the next day speak to the next board then no not legally not legally but that happens it does happen we're kind of sneaking into a violation right now the agenda item is to talk about the board officers and we're talking about training policy and now we're talking about that's what this discussion is about we're talking about chief of policy now not collecting part of yeah it's a discussion regarding the procedure for electing your officers and this is the this is the procedure for electing board officers what did you mention that the second page came from another organization multiple school districts yeah no no it came from uh i think it was texas association they had a full handbook on on a lot of detail about board operations i think the potential possible the possibility of a board president and go that every month um it's uh it's not healthy for the board it's not what we talked about last wednesday i think that there needs to be continuity it needs to be a chance for people with different opinions to work together it's going to happen what happens in relationships going to happen in the school board and if someone became angry and i had an ex support president he met mr exit for president he said you know i want to get someone to go against him it really kills i think it can harm the image that poor and that's i think it's very unhealthy i think the whole thing is good except for the last paragraph yeah and it's largely what we already have there's that section of the clerk um yeah i know that's not what we think about the last one in addition to the organization [Music] could lead to that potentially being every and there are options you know attendance um participation meetings things like that for some options built in that don't directly address officers of the board but their options built ins not enough because boards are elected by the public i had a board member arrested for molesting a child on my campus as a principal they never took him off the board that's frustrating frustrating but so there's severe cases like that that should be addressed we've never had to address one of those awful thank goodness but uh i think i think it takes away it could take a week let me say that it could take away um the need for board members to work things out i have discussions about why we don't agree and because those are done correctly those can be healthy yeah i don't know an argument for this for the stability of not allowing this you know a president is here for a year and um there's security in that you say that the administrators know who's going to be leading the meetings um i also think there's potentially significant issues with making it right here no matter what so bringing it back to the agenda item are we agreed that that we talked about we're going to have a discussion and then and then a vote instead of just voting that you want that in the agenda item from january i know because i'm gonna have to before the elections themselves no for wednesday no not this week no i mean when we come to we open up on the meeting the special meeting before the sun session the agenda item should say discussion and vote on fourth president yes okay yeah that but that doesn't conclude no okay that would have to be a whole separate item to provide the for policy sure so can we have can we continue this discussion on wednesday hopefully eric will begin i don't know that we should make it board organization meeting like this with that paragraph i don't think he would even he asked for a discussion for a discussion for electing board officers well this is this is um i feel like he should be part of the discussion could we add it as a discussion item for wednesday and hopefully eric's here and we can give us his thoughts i [Music] possible changes to the agenda of to the policy yeah i mean essentially the same thing but but for wednesday so we can all be here for it you aren't used for expanding have the same discussion right now no [Music] so you're just moving this actual agenda item to wednesday because other art because one lover's right here all right the last one is the um discussion of possible changes for um policy b-e-d-a the agenda preparation and if i understand correctly the blue paper is what we have now and the green paper is a change a proposed change yeah this one i propose what we currently have on the books and given um events over the last couple of months we found another one another copy of another version of pde va that has the copyright approval signature a language has changed instead of saying the superintendent with be approved before the president on behalf of the governing board as a whole may place others on the agenda and it has anybody any board member proposing for consideration or placement will notify the superintendent of the particular at least five working days before the change i am looking for is the main wording on it is the superintendent or board members may place items on the agenda and that way we don't have a problem where there are things that are being proposed that we don't i mean i know the dispensation will help us to avoid them not hearing back on them but um i think that would help avoid things like we have recently where the majority of the board wanted something nothing so uh ronnie you said the most important part is the superintendent or board members on the agenda would you be comfortable um swapping out these these two policies and um the rest of the policy has some has some changes not as significant as that but are you comfortable with this other policy because it already has asba endorsement yeah that's right that's what i propose that we discuss swapping out the policy that we've currently been using for this one that already has improvement okay so all the rest i think it's much more clear much than the original i remember mentioning that too nikki whaley on the phone and she was surprised and she said oh would you please send me a copy of both of those here's the challenge that asba's having staff is not agreeing on this and when she and i spoke about it um prior to last minute's meeting we got we have to get together as an espa staff on what we want what we believe on this and uh it's going to be interesting to see how they do that or if they do that well then they'll sort of send the policy advisory out if they change it we'll get that see what they have to say then which have that quickly but i thought perhaps we should talk to me more planning at the wednesday meeting that they were going to have that meeting prior last wednesday which version are you saying they don't they don't want anyone there's there's there's staff the staff is divided aspa and i say that i don't know what fractions but the staff her position for example is difference in people right the policies people rights policies don't support any change she does well and apparently too if it's got their recovery yet and as it's got their copyright symbol on it you've always said that means approved so they've approved both versions of it you just say that there's more controversy about the one that's green apparently she said oh the controversy i'm sorry the controversy of asba is about the current about the policy that we have [Music] and then of course just like before so when he proposes a complete off the wall idea just table it and move on or somebody proposes something that legally can't be discussed then on the spreadsheet there's a space there for a reason for [Music] board we have i don't see too many people you know see the crazy ideas coming out so at the training session i think he went through in a lot of detail um the agenda the process for building agendas and what she recommends we could put i don't know did you get this in the email email from her today um it's a summary of the of the training so there's a whole big section um that covers what what she discussed on what we discussed about about this exact thing um she sent it to everybody's school email so i'll just forward it to all your personal emails just so that i make sure that you have it thank you because i didn't i'm not suggesting we do but any of these things we could add to the current policy to make it more clear um but what she suggested was that we create um like if you want even more clarity we want very on the process of how how things go on the spreadsheet we create what amounts to a regulation our own regulation that um it flushes out the policy a bit more um and that could be added to the policy manual or not because they don't necessarily have to be published by sba as a regulation and i'm saying that that's that's all in here so we could put this on if this isn't on monday's wednesday's agenda for a vote but we could add it it has to have another first reading so if he was to come back and there's no changes by wednesday we could be a vote on wednesday or by tuesday because we need to be on the internet we're not going to get this down for you [Music] okay i don't think the attorney needs to see it accordingly that's one of those things yes all of our policies when we make changes that's not a policy and and also this is already an approved asba policy item when it's already been what did you think it's already been invented by a therapist about adopting changing policies what's one of the things you asked her it was a good idea to have lawyers look at it and she said yeah that's not a bad idea she didn't say we had to and she can't that's not our policy um this is a this is an answer when she said that was it clear that we weren't saying we were writing a new policy to be proposed because i definitely would want a lawyer to know that if we were creating a new one but for me there would be a difference if we're and could be wrong could would continue there would be a difference if we're switching to one that has already diagnosed with approval right but it's it's such a lot of fun right it's that that district approval with that statistics lawyer not our district approval with our district court right i'm curious though it says here bda and then it has copyright does that mean that from another school yeah that's but that's we're looking at the e b a the blue one yeah that's from the premium okay so yeah the copyright coverage one is this b-e-d-b-a it's just a different version of bbc but that's not this right now because that's the one i object to whenever we call asba and we ask them for clarification on policy their first answer is always check with your district order or run it by your district lawyer as far as it same thing with them will use the iga we have to send it to them every year and the district learner has to approve it every year so whenever we may change the policy that isn't run by the law or the legislature or the policy advisors it has to go through the district that we require a lawyer to review is lance and i we have done this every policy we've changed every policy we've changed that asba has not offered a policy advisory and nikki said it's obliged to see the way i heard his wife talk to attorney we always hear that from the people policy services at asba i think it's wise to continue for one more month folks to have the attorney take a look at it well should we take i'd like to see it tabled until we have more information and the other board members are here i don't think we should rush it through in 24 hours it's still working hours no question for what then is the significance of the copyright symbol from asgore the copyright i mean we know that it's one that asthma has approved which to me is more than saying this other district approved it because asthma has also approved it's not just that district lawyers who can use it too one thing that has a little stress to you is the copyright does not mean that they support us legally if we make a mistake based on following the policy because they're not they're not our legal representative that's why they want us to go they have lawyers all over the place at asb but none of them are supposed to give districts any legal advice that's why they want us to go and get the legal advice from our own on a lawyer and that's what we've done we do it with animal use we deal with anything but that's different from what i've heard you say in the past about the copyright symbol on there because when you know where at one point wendy had proposed changing one policy and it wouldn't have been one more than one copyright they will not give us legal advice like chris chris who was the uh executive director at asba for years was an attorney he can't give any of us advice when we call he may say something in passing in the hallway that's not legal will print anything we send them that's policy sometimes they want to make sure we're not going off on a law goose chase so to speak so that's why they're saying our lawyers won't confirm it but you need to have your lawyer look at it i've not had a time i've asked about a policy they haven't [Music] but it's like if we want to call in good advice yeah you did this right or you know it's more of a advisory thing lawful out of the law if it's not copyrighted if it's copyrighted they're supposed to they're going to give us full service whatever that means i've never had we've never had to deal with a lawsuit against an adoptive policy okay i hope you have too well i'll say i certainly would like to change these two policies but given the fact too that like you said there's one month left and um since marsha has said she's not planning on running it seemed to me okay a new president would be a would be a good time to start a new policy especially since now we have the spreadsheet in place to help with the next month i know there's a camera so i believe that so this would be is this considered a first rating no january no it wouldn't be like i think i'm kind of i want us to end up in an infinite loop is there a reason first reading could not be onward i'd like to see two more board members here frankly yeah i know if we have a forum we have a legal meeting tonight we could yes we could i don't know why we could but whether it's good practice or not that's something i'm answering that i don't know let's practice without having uh other people's influence [Music] that's why i'm proposing we did the first meeting on wednesday and hopefully those two meetings would be here we should be here yeah i don't like the idea of a reading on changing your major policy with only three of the five words that's why i'm asking if we can put it on the agenda for wednesday to do the stuff where you're getting first reading sorry and then if they're not here again then we go from there right and then if they are that gives us a month to send it to the lawyer i can agree with that so removing this agenda item to wednesday also it's going to be different who wrote the green paper that's straight from policy from which which of the districts there were multiple districts that use this same version so they were straight off of their policy bridge page and the type of agenda preparation dissemination that the various policies used by vicki's history how'd you find out that information on your website for all these schools you met too well through the website to the astral website and punched in this is what i'm looking for documents from every district that have something labeled within the preparation how many different policies did you find how many different policies did you there were mentioned it was mainly those two there were other lines that weren't actually policies happened to hit some of the keywords but those are the two that i noticed um and they both have the copyright symbol i can go back and see if there are other ones there that i figured too with the copyright symbol being there i'm glad this has a copyright assembly and alive i feel safer yep that's specifically what i was looking for one that i do so when i was looking at these before i can't say it's exactly the same one so i don't have a 20 poles but um most districts had adopted one of the two either the one that looks like ours or one that looks like the alternate so we'll put this on his first reading for the further when he's the eighth can we make this declaration that as long as the other board members up here okay because i don't want to do it for just three people no first reading is just a discussion oh well yeah but then the next thing you know we've already had the first meeting so no no they don't they've been yeah so okay then there's a little more discussion can we have a call for future dental items on wednesday no we've been doing it on mondays and wednesdays for a while now on the agenda that was actually my first request was to have it added because we keep doing it but it isn't on the agenda i'll put it on the spreadsheet but i i mean it's not an agenda then if there's no other items that are on the agenda we can't just discuss things up on the agenda monday and wednesday and it's not a discussion it's just it's a statement of future items as long as you don't realize that they're not going to be on the agenda the next day i think there are certain cases is

between classes so i was the kids this was during his lunch period so this was it it might have been yeah well he might have taken it could it have been conceived as a lunch the cafeteria was still open at that point as well well act like right now august 30th so right at the beginning of the school anyone else's children say they ran out of food at lunch way before yes yes the chicken was frozen yes it will have lunch no bread only tortillas for sandwiches frozen chicken that's here in high school so the chicken tenders as everyone remembers it as uh we did run out of an option but there was still uh sandwiches there was still salads available there were still hamburgers available that afternoon we specifically ran out of chicken tenders because we had also served a record number of students in that particular lunch we actually had over 875 portions of that product available we used them all by the end of the third lunch and with only a very short period of time between three and four as well as students coming down earlier or teachers releasing students earlier it does cause a bit of a time crunch so they did have chicken nuggets that were cooking but there it wasn't that we were out of food it's just that we happen to be out of that particular option at the time um given the circumstances it was the first week of school we weren't really quite sure where we were going to stand with numbers a lot of times kids are spending their hours in the day trying to to navigate the hallways find out where their classes are so it does make a challenge in the beginning because it's hard to forecast because we don't quite know what the incoming class is especially when you have two grades who haven't really stepped foot in this building because they were on distance learning the two years prior so you have freshmen and sophomores who have never been here before it's it's hard to to get a good grasp of those forecasted numbers we i don't believe we've had a incident like that since the beginning of the school year there is again there has never been a situation and i can confidently stand by that there's never been a situation where we have not had food available ever since five years or longer it might not be what's menu per se that doesn't happen incredibly awesome yeah this special for that day but that's kind of why we have such a short time if it's not ready that's where maybe they are putting it out i don't know so i haven't heard like i said i'm just it's like the voice of this yeah the beginning of the school year we definitely like i said we definitely ran into an issue with with just sheer volume yeah and i'll be honest i haven't heard nearly as many maybe as much chatter as the beginning of the school year which i i'm sure everybody can understand that the beginning and they were also we were also pretty packed that is correct for those first couple of weeks right so that yeah adds a lot into it right and i think sharing your presentation will definitely help and if people know like i didn't know you could sign up for text like that's great yeah so we we urged when we started that texting service it was very prevalent very very happy to do during the days that we were closed to remote learning because we would offer perhaps every tuesday at high school for pickup meals during our closures but maybe somebody called sick as you know people we couldn't get people to work we still can't get people to work anybody wants to volunteer or come and help us or know somebody who wants a job please come come and see us but we may have to change our locations so we'd send it a text universally so we urge principals please put it on their website certainly on our website but please put it on their individual websites and i think the majority the overwhelming majority of websites that i checked i did see it yeah and i spot check every once a week so they're still there but again i spoke to a lot of principals just recently can you reinforce it do you send down flyers i'll print them up stuff them into big backpacks a lot of principles are now just doing everything electronically so it's just yet another thing to kind of add to the family's task list but it is very helpful we'll sometimes when there's a change um unfortunately that morning it doesn't help but if you know the night before and you have a two-year-old or a second grader rather and they had their heart set on pasta meatballs and we're not able to get it the families could maybe prep them for the next morning hey they're not they're not going to have pasta tomorrow to having grilled cheese as an example so that's a great way for us at least to communicate aside from making the announcements in the school itself i have a couple specific questions if you don't mind for the elementary schools do they still get i thought they had gotten like a hot food option and then also like a backup option if they don't like that but then my son said that they announced that there was no longer a cold option not that it affects it because he won't touch it but he was concerned that there was no bagel or whatever that i guess a lot of the third graders tend to prefer so i was just wondering if you could clarify what the options are at elementary school level there are very specific menu options for the day so we do have a special of the day and it's usually a hot item and there's always the yogurt cheese and bagel bagel meal is one option and there should be a deli sandwich as an option as well at the elementary school that is correct so you're saying to the announcement that there's no cold option is incorrect there is a cold option yes okay it should be yes it's listed on the menu i know that's why i'm asking we've actually had parents say that like her son didn't want the lunch for that day then he went to get the bagel but there was no bagel and then my son mentioned that his teacher announced that there was no longer a was the bagel announcement just happened to be all joking aside like no last friday no yes one of our freezers went down so there's a very good chance that i didn't watch the problem we have like a parent group parent was asking if that was still an option so my son just happened to mention that his teacher also announced it so i didn't know that this is very strange those options are universally available across the district okay so hot lunch or backup lunch that is great got it um my other question comes from the principal of rodgers park dr julia who is wondering if barge park is going to get the salad bar that they were promised we actually spoke about that uh probably four years ago at this point she said that it was a green light ago decision made we can look into it again i know they they make pre-made sounds [Music] health plan like in our presentation it seems like awfully healthy um but are the lunches like are the is the bag preventing like a super healthy lunch all the time it means i know they still have like corn dogs some days and stuff like that which i i'm personally like not healthy at all um so i know pizza is always an option well they always have pizza as an option i mean that's like someone healthy crust or something i feel like the other one should be healthy but i didn't know the bag was sort of like preventing i mean you see me like with it health knowledge but yeah i don't know if the bag was like through preventing a problem if the hot lunch would be better when it served like on a tray easier you know i mean i can't imagine how hard it is to keep something perfect in a bag yeah i would definitely say it does restrict it in a way the the serving style just because i mean a vegetable if you if you like prepare it right then you're like a go and the kids will eat it but then if it's like cold and it's mushy and things like that after having to put it into all the individuals it's like the appeal of the vegetable definitely is taken away so that was a bummer um otherwise i would say it always fits into the guidelines you can always count on that portion it's always whole grains you're always having a certain amount of fiber you're always having a certain amount of all the nutrients are all all there they just might look a little different so a corn dog you know some of his school meals are like that's their meals right they go home they don't have a perfect house that has whatever they want so the school meal is their meal and i was just thinking that should be a decently healthy option right i think we're definitely also trying to move as the serving styles are hopefully changing it will move a little bit more in the direction of adding like i sneak a little bit of vegetables in the chili and stuff like that like you know so we are kind of leaning a little bit towards in the serving style including options that are more home cooked because that always helps in any facet of nutrition like if it's home cooked it's more than likely has less sodium processed fats all that stuff you can kind of probably more likely to eat it for sure which is why i think the chicken leg was so well yeah we'd like to menu items that they're gonna like right so that was getting that out and that's my concern if all the schools aren't required to go back to the other way then you're left with on really not quality food so i'm concerned about that if why well that's what's tricky is like some some schools if you're moving a little further along you want to give them all those options yeah we have tons of ideas and things like that and we're willing to like work with our staff to get to the point of like creating those but it is really challenging if it's there's eight how many elementary schools sorry i'm from mother's field so i'm like not not down these farts but yeah so 13 schools you've got to get on board it's really challenging i'm even more concerned i'm sorry too too because now to hear that there's even more restrictions depending on which school and where their lunch setup is so now if they're worried about something spilling like i was surprised to hear that so now there's even more limitations and what you guys can offer these kids which is why none of my kids get lunch anymore because they were like it's changed we don't understand why and they think it's awful so we bring a whole lunch every day i mean they were pretty i mean they always had their favorites um but even that has changed but i i think that that's part of the problem too is to hear that depending on what school you're in right now yeah if there's a bad item on top of it it's even more limited based on what how they're eating within the school so how do you have any options i mean what are your options what are they doing is what okay no no uh everybody gets a hamburger and whatever fruit is in the bag and whatever looks like i don't think it was displayed in that way she was making some announcement from the school like she my son's teacher is very like easy going she's not gonna make some sort of random rule it had to be for that day or maybe my son took it as forever maybe he was born that day i don't know that's why i was asking but i don't think she like went broke you know a different place but either way it does not seem like uniform at all and i wonder if the spilling stuff maybe because they're eating in the classroom and they're like getting really upset to even hear that and i and i did not know that it was not a uniform decision i think this sort of piece meal does it make a lot of sense to me i think also you know every i i can't really speak to what a principal's job entails i guess but i i know everyone they want like you know the best for their kids hopefully and so i think there's not been a huge um i think we can involve the schools that have successfully implemented the service like the high school and more street and things like that i think we can kind of get them to communicate a little bit so that then they can see not to be like afraid i guess of like letting the kids eat in certain places and see what they're doing and communicate a little more so we would love to also facilitate that as well to kind of see if they have ideas amongst each other to get something to work you know what i mean i do i i personally think it should just come from the top that everybody has to uh figure it out so that we can have quality quality lunches for the kids and more options you know in the salad bar that you're talking about at rogers park right they're actually they're having a broad view i guess they used to have a west side too my daughter said it's no longer i mean i mean that those are things you should have at all the middle schools the high school yeah should be equal it should be equal like i just if it feels very disconnected i don't really understand that this sort of mindset around this right now but um and you know and again i know it's not it doesn't sound like it's you per se so we'll have to try to no we're four feet and principal air came to us collectively we met about two months ago maybe even more at this point after school started it's just can we do kind of a hybrid of what your intent is or what your direction was to pre-pack everything and and yet give the kids somewhat of a choice and so to this day i'm not sure how involved you are with the school but the kids have a choice of vegetables the kids have a choice of fruits and they like it and they're eating it yeah the more important our goal is for the kids to eat if they don't need it what do we need to be here for them yeah we want but it's the fact that if the individual schools have to approach you to make a change you know is that happening or you don't change until you're asked no no no we we approached we kind of highlighted it at moore street extremely successful principal is very very happy as a matter of fact she wrote a great congratulatory email to us and we took it to we brought this concern a couple weeks ago we met and uh we brought it to administration's attention and they're going to be addressing it with the principals is our serving styles so quality is stemming back to the way we're serving so we'd like to get all of our schools back on uh the way we're serving we were serving pre-clothing for quality and for more options and it sounds like its principles are being reviewed it depends on the school and our ability to spread out or not be able to spread out and so we have some cafeterias that are so small literally the kids or don't even have as much space as we have right here and some schools do so for example south street the cafeteria is particularly small the same with ellsworth elementary particularly given the size of those two schools where sadly rock were able to spread everyone out and literally have a single desk the same is true at park avenue they're really spread out have a single desks separate tables but the school is so big and the cafeteria wings are so very basic also they still have as big as the cafeterias they still have tables in the gym and we're taking that taking over half of the gym to try to distance the kids as much as possible so it's really going to be school dependent and to help determine whether or not we can do this given what we've learned about the spread i think we're in a much better place than we were before but we also are at greater risk when we have more kids on top of each other without the mask and have challenges with quarantine so that was really the difficulty and just saying go back to normal in our cafeterias because we want to expose ourselves increase our risk in our regard so that's kind of kind of why we've been hesitant to go all the way back we understand they've come to the cost into some of the things that they're talking about had the opportunity to kind of spread out a little bit and have some options for lunch which has been great um but but as i share with barry i welcome to the cafeteria that day and i'm hearing some of the same concerns that i've heard in other forums with parents about the quality of the food regardless right so that's why it was important for me to have this discussion and find an opportunity for us to talk about families having input and students have an input and actual menu ultimately that will prove not just quality but also kids just kind of going back to what i heard when i walked in jade was just talking about the different options kids would be happy with what's being served barrio will probably already share the issues and challenges around shortages with food choices and staffing and you know that aside because that's just kind of what we're dealing with right now the longer term 20 maybe not right this minute maybe not tomorrow but 22-23 at the latest you know we want to make sure our kids have some and our families have some significance saying what the menu looks like and if they're happy with the menu i'm hoping kids will begin to be a little happier with the food options that are in front of them whatever it might be um [Music] until we met a couple weeks ago i hadn't thought about the fact that again i decided this time when we met that we're limited options when his staff can't reasonably get hot lunches and say hey he's like this lunch is something this lunch it's kind of one lunch for breakfast or whatever and you put it down on the table because that's how they actually service you but we can definitely go through a process in which the schools that have the ability to serve because we can spread kids out um we can look at those schools that are able to have some equity issues for those that will not be able to but i think the vast majority of our kids will have the flexibility to do this so we can jump back identify which um i'm totally good with the principles making the decision because i know she's making the decisions the best care our biggest problem was like the chickpeas like every other day and i do think that's gotten better and things like and like this i have a unique perspective because i stuck there too so i'm there at lunch every day with them and like when they get salad but there's no dressing like i did fourth grade and 80 hands are up because they like salad but when they're not dressing then they're not getting it but again is that like one of the concerns where you're hearing that some classrooms saying yeah they are okay because it does sound like there's there's that element to it too depending on where you are what kind of your eating setup is i guess i just get confused with like what does spacing have to do with how we're serving food like what we're serving i don't know like trying to look like our rivers are way down the hallway down the wing and you can't give a kindergartener a tray i guess you can go up you have the option of a sandwich for lunch or pizza right you have different options and now because we've asked food services to bring the food to the table you know we're not going to walk with mashed potatoes with gravy and loose peas and expected staff to run these conditions to all of the tables for 200 kids lunch waited 30 minutes to get them off clean them up and then get another 200 kids with loose food going in like the plate versus a cold lunch in a bag we package them they're all ready to go 300 kids measuring those kids whatever the size of the school bag like that that's a lot more reasonable in terms of how we have to turn them over so the schools that we have some more flexibility because the cafeterias are bigger you can go back to the kind of older style of growing up christy what would you like to eat today like a pizza would you like a sandwich i want a sandwich an apple boom boom and you go back to your table they don't have to go with the bag lunches on every table they can spread it out so i think that's what barry's referring to kind of piloted at mars to see something we can do but i'm telling you now if you go to south street that was worthwhile which is going to be tight it's going to be able to do that and not have the increased risk would it be possible to do some kind of a middle ground so in the morning and then has that luncheon delivered because they all sit at the same table right so i'm sorry almost like like a hospital like when anybody's ever talking to them what you're gonna eat and then they bring that meal to you i don't know well in effect we have that today right so they kind of used to do with lunch calendar or whatever sort of a thing so i mean just coming through our area our survey our our serving area is going to just change the minds of a lot of folks i think it's going to look nicer yeah i'm all for that i think they should go through but we make special menus just for those groups we understand there's some challenges with the little ones carrying back to the class in that case maybe they could order like in the morning and have their hot lunch delivered to you know or so some of some of the challenges with that that i definitely think we could we could grow into and definitely take a look at are something like transporting so for a school like shelter rock who has classrooms the majority of it um you know taking out and i'll use a low number i'll say 100 kids transporting 100 lunch trays while keeping them above temperature maintaining all the food codes and everything else without spilling and anything else everything if it's assuming that it's self-contained every product on the menu would have to get packaged everything would have to be pre-contained pre-wrapped so you'd still get a bag of things so is it possible of course with enough resources and enough time and time being a very large component in just about everything that we do especially how precious it is for the principals and the teachers and everything else is it possible theoretically but is it practical in order to take you know a hospital car around the classrooms and while you're dropping off 20 trays to classroom one and then having to stop unload go to classroom two 20 more trays is your food gonna stay hot what are the resources that are gonna go into that making sure so there's a lot of challenges that do that which is one of the reasons why um and as much as the pre-packaged food does kind of play into it a lot it's a little bit more easier because you know if you have say pizza for example like the galaxy pizzas which kids as people you know kids have seen one so they look like little little pies pretty much um you know it's a lot easier to bag 200 pizzas and then off they go to the classrooms along with whatever their vegetable and other components may be trying to give them individual trades and things like that it does open up a big clause into having to transport you know okay we're going to do 200 bagel meals first and then we're going to do 164 sandwiches and then 47 of this and then 28 of this so now you're gonna have to do multiple trips because you could have multiple products and different guidelines we're making on top of it all right wow and it's a challenge because something as simple as a as crazy as it sounds as a plastic container you know we're not just one school district i mean the whole country is ordering the same plastic containers like what are we doing what are we doing right that's another whole topic yeah so there are a lot of a lot of hurdles but we got some great ideas from the uh the travis group the group of dedicated uh elementary i think there were all schools a rep for muslims uh yeah yeah so their high school went down to the elementaries we had some actually we got some great input from them this was mid to earlier november and our december menu was reflective so as leah was saying one of the mom said uh and i like to use the the example somebody if one of them said my kids love lentil soup with hot dogs i presume that's a big latin cultural dish and trying to meet the needs i said can we can you tell us what it what's in it we had some conversation about it and i said well maybe we couldn't use those particular spices because they're heavily salted we were not permitted to do that but maybe if we broke apart the spice blend and we segregated out the garlic and onion powder and so on and so forth we can come to terms then we ran into the risk of giving soup to kids so we met them halfway and we came back to the table lee and i and we said well maybe we can make a side dish of lentils would that kind of satisfy the lentil soup as opposed to having nothing and still engaging them and we're going to be running that i think so we put a lot of their items they love chicken my kids love chicken how come we can't do grocery chicken sure enough we put chicken on the menu chicken drumsticks they were there i don't want to say they sold out but i saw it at the high school it was i think everybody just grabbed it right to record something actually across the top so new ideas we can kind of customize them to meet our needs exactly because we're listening facilities stacking timing as doug said it's it's it's a lot to do to get those meals out for the kids but if you come up with any ideas we're i'm certainly on uh email list we're all on our face on our web page so look us up drop us an email we can start the dialogue we are meeting as i said earlier we are meeting um but i hope we'll be regular we're looking forward to the next challenge group our time yep three times um we met with a group of students we're meeting at ais nick the end of this week and we've asked some other principals maybe they're interested in putting some parents and students in the same room or we assume so if you have any ideas if you have any suggestions send it our way and we can just work through whatever challenges we have together at the end of the day if the kids don't eat it's nobody went we're just making it for nothing it's a waste thank you very much yes yeah i saw your website i'm just looking at it today is there is there a email there on the website where i could say you know i could send it to uh the superintendent secretary yeah i didn't think i'd ever be this like emotionally invested in like chicken drums [Laughter] next up tonight hello everyone the back side over here i wanted to let everyone know that we have been granted funds to run the parents supporting educational excellence again i'm going to pass this around to everyone we are in the recruitment phase phase of this project this is a curriculum brought to danbury from the center for school change which actually has a different name now i can't remember exactly what it is partners there's a 12-week course we will start on the second to or the last saturday of december and then go for 12 weeks i've given you the registration form as well as every single evening starts with a question of what you're going to talk about in class it is facilitated by two folks outside of our school district one that has educational background one that has a family background as well as understanding how districts work how policies are written and it's a nice compliment i'm sure many of you have heard of tlti the parent leadership training institute it complements that in a way of helping families to become change agents effective changing agents in their schools to make change you know around policy working with the board of ed understanding how board events work understanding how laws become regulations and then on to how the regulations and the policies are made no matter how policies are made for the regulations and the statutes it also has an opportunity for families to come together and talk to other community experts around education and gathering this is happening in about four or five other districts this coming year starting in january our saturday meeting will be in person at our cottage street facility where i'm located right now we'll do social distancing and the class will start there and then we will be on tuesday nights on zoom uh be about a two and a half hour class at night this is all free of charge to our families and so we're asking um for everyone to go back to their school to recruit two people we'd like to see a full class of 26 books they do attend a board of ed meetings so as we get back if they're in person in like march they'll be there superintendent wallston comes and speaks to the group it's just it's a really really good class to really understand what makes a district work and how can families be really good change agents and making changes in their schools so i invite all of you to encourage folks or yourself to become active and register in this program and we'll be off and running in january yeah and can you explain how this is different if at all really focuses on civics and personal development where this is focused on school change and how do we make decisions and how can how can a parent okay or how can a family be active in them in those changes there is not any plti project left at the end but we have seen many people move into board of ed positions city council positions really understanding how government and districts work so where pll plti is really focused more on civics and people being a citizen yeah will that have um information like specific to danbury or is this more like general knowledge it does it does so you know you start off with a 10 000 foot level talking about how laws are made what comes down from the federal government like around title one then or exactly what barry talked about starts in the usda i think then it goes to the state department of ag how the state works with the information they've received from the feds and then how we operationalize it in dandruff absolutely thank you so there will be very specific things um to dandruff especially when kevin speaks to the group when we have community night or the world cafe which is you know a little different on zoom but you know understanding other fans perspectives in the district that's one of the change and what i've given you on that second page is those questions that will be asked each night and so you can really see you know how that happens national state and then how do you get those perceptions and take care take those opportunities okay great hi i'm grace grace is my new assistant director for the office of families thank you so much for having me i just wanted to mention about the registration forms we had some parents um just having a little bit of trouble sending it to me electronically it's a written form so some couldn't scan it and send it even if they should you just email over the information on the form totally okay it doesn't need to be signed obviously the most important information is that first part but if they don't have access to a computer or zoom they can definitely just send it over to me or you can kind of be that bridge or liaison and send that information over to me thank you so much i'm sorry i just missed who is actually teaching the course so the center for school change assigns two different people one is an educator from another district and then there is another professional facilitator that helps facilitate and they spend time with us ahead of time learning more about danbury as well yes they're from the center first for school change that's where the curriculum is written from okay is that in [Music] serve as a canada group to school districts across the state um so they're not like arrests like headed or they're kind of independent from all the rest but they still work hand in hand with um superintendents and state fish they work firsthand with the commissioner's office on these types of positions between the state and supervision to help academia like that's right like they're from academia yes yes yes yes but can talk to families on a non academic okay way too okay it's all about equity and developing relationships because when you develop the relationships that's how change happens and in cases like this they're likely to send someone to us who has a family connection kind of background and the fact that the mission of safety missionaries i forget what was commissioned at tucker's background prior to this appointment as commissioner oh um charlene tucker she is um her background was like overseeing the whole family school partnership patrice nelson who was a facilitator for our pog project she's the one that oversees that for school change and if you were any part of our designing our pog i know estella you were i'm kate i think you were as well um yeah over there she and rachel you were there too right yeah so she is really really you know the go-getter for this and she makes sure i get to interview um the person that they haven't come for we've had in the past four different facilitators six different facilitators this is our eighth round of this and they've all been phenomenal i've had no issues i've known all of them uh you know and i'm hoping that the gentleman who just did plt and bruce that he'll accept this if you've just recently taken plti this last year it would be yeah it would be great to have bruce like to balance it out because we'd like to see some dads part of the program as well i also just wanted to mention the course was only at this time offered in english yeah so if you have any parents that um you know understand speak a decent amount of english they'll be able to get to the course but at this time so what we've done in the past because we've had a fair amount of people that are bilingual we meet a half an hour ahead of time with them to go over those really key terms that are going to be introduced during the course so that it doesn't slow down the pace but it gives that fan you know what is an iep what is it what is an individual education plan so we spent half an hour prior to class starting on those different terms and concepts to make it easier for folks uh it will not be the weekend that plti starts on it will either be the 22nd or 29th perfect yes yes good thank you thank you thank you all right school reports shannon okay so for the high school we finally finalized our mask fundraiser we had uh pick up and uh took delivery this past saturday and sunday at the high school and it went very well we do have some that were left over that weren't ordered are were ordered but weren't paid for and nobody really responded so we do have a few left over if anybody still wants them we have put on pause the senior blue wall project just because of weather so in the spring they'll finish the final tough jobs joe from west side is going to finish that and the beautification for benches and flowers bushes by the gym doors obviously we'll be waiting on for the spring for the weather as well our focus right now is thinking about senior gifts ideas for the seniors for prior to graduation so we've been going through some ideas and one of the plans that we have is starting in january to ask the seniors to sign up for the program through like a google form and then we'll do like a random drawing for those seniors that participate and we'll do 22 because that's the focus for this year 22 gift cards uh for like a bagel man or another venue that we come up with we kind of have been asking some students for venues and everyone seems to keep saying bagel man so um so our next meeting is going to be the end of january or february and we've already put out that we're looking for senior parent volunteers to help this year again because after we do the gift cards the other thing that we thought about doing is 22 days prior to graduation whichever day that ends up being based on snow days we want to try to do like baskets and raffle them off as well as like a bigger item to make it a little more exciting for them we're still kind of trying to figure out what to put in them uh and the lawn signs we're trying this year to do a little bit earlier i guess i'm a freshman parent so i don't know but prior to this i guess there was some concern about getting them in a timely fashion so that's something that they really feedback has said that they want that to be earlier in addition the school there's a stanbury school store that's online but the hatter's hot spot is uh started up a new staff member took over and she recently opened it at the beginning of december and we're partnering to try to sell some items as well so that it could be a little more lucrative for her as well and uh just our next meeting we're just going to try to do more of like a presentation style um since as i keep hearing everyone mention that it's more than just the freshmen that haven't been at danbury high school and i know me as a parent last year it was very difficult to try to register for classes because it was so brand new it felt like my child was in college and so um one of the things that a lot of us had talked about is maybe just having a simple presentation about how you register for classes at the high school because i know for myself that was a concern for me last year i was panicked and this year i still am like oh no wait how do i do this again so um you know because we haven't really talked with other parents in person and we haven't been in the school so um yeah i think so and i mean i would like to like have that kind of factor over to eighth grade parents as well because i know from myself i was very nervous about it so um i know people with seniors kind of look at us and say oh you'll get there but anyway so that is one thing that we're trying to push for and then maybe they'll be you know people that will also want to be involved the thing is they will make sure your student takes every class needed to graduate they will be a senior and all of a sudden right but it's like one of those things when you don't know i sorry and there's a know of choices which is right it's a good thing and an overall thing but it's the options are phenomenal too i wasn't saying that yeah they still agree i know and i know i was part of the principal's breakfast and dan donovan had mentioned that we were supposed to have this training in middle school that the kids received the training for that in middle school or were introduced to it and i haven't met one parent that said they they did and even parents that have kids that graduated even still say they don't understand it so that's something i think we need to follow up with but try something yeah i don't know and i don't know when it's supposed to be introduced but i guess we're my understanding is they should be working on it progressively through their high school their entire high school career um and i was just told to them about this today have you been in there like you have to put something there you're gonna forget by the time you get to be a senior um and i know like the the pto the danger used to have a presentation about naviance just for parents to just kind of walk them through they do get a username and a password and parents get like a parent password my recommendation is get your child's username and password and go on as them because it's just more options open but it is like my son's a junior and he's like yeah whatever he hasn't been on either wednesday do you receive it from the school counselor it's the students get it they probably got it in eighth grade honestly and it's probably something that they just weren't aware of what it was but your counselor your child's counselor can just tell them what their username and password is and then it says it's just how they request recommendation letters but it is like the pto did used to do it i think it was just another parent that wasn't like a professional or a counselor that came in and did it it was a parent that went through how to do an advance okay i will last in high school what we do now i've seen it work best when it's introduced as graduating eighth graders and so they what we do is so let's just as let's just say i'm a guidance counselor and i would sit with you and we would kind of walk through your career interests and those interests may or may not inform your electives in your ninth grade here so that will begin to inform your schedule for the next year and then every year you would get your guidance counselor right in google do an exercise if you want to be an accountant and so you know you would have your typical class that you have to graduate but your your electives would be kind of guided by your aspirations when you leave high school until those electives you try to like follow the track and you know you speak to you as a student call your mom and dad and then they say yes this is a great idea this is what my little girl wants to do right and then go on and then by the time you get to your junior year that conversation informs college choices and schools that you want to apply to and so naviance as you continue to navigate to show you what schools match your majors arranges so the program itself is comprehensive complex it's a really good one when and especially the part about the communication with the parents because i just find that well i just found my son's password to it he got it on 3 23 2020.
