>> Board members, I will entertain a motion. >> Board of school trustees approve morphology plus for the elementary functional reading adoption as presented. >> Second. >> Motion by Josh. seconded by Mike.
Um and then I could reach out to Midwest Energy as well and see if they would be interested in helping in some some some sort of fashion on what that would look like. I have city council on the 29th. Okay. On the 29th? Mhm. What about the 27th? What about the 22nd? It's a Wednesday. I might be But, I'd have to look at my phone computer. The 22nd is a Wednesday. I could do that. Or would it be better to use The 27th is fine if you can do I just said no. If it's on the 22nd, I won't be able to get here till later in the day. I won't be able to get here at 6:00. It'd have to be like 7:00. >> On the 22nd? Yeah. And we mean Or if we even just wanted to if you would just wanted to zoom in.
And as many of you have heard of the podcast, it feels like a real person is talking. Uh fun fact, it actually uh took at least one of the voices of one teacher from O E and one teacher from O A, incorporated their voices. So, when I was listening to it, I was like, "Oh my god, that's one of my teachers talking." I was like, "Oh." Um so, we ended up using all those thematic codes that we kind of broke down with the use of AI. And then we also used student voice. We also cooperated um fellow SSAC members and also staff members in schools to kind of direct where we wanted this podcast. Obviously with AI, it is heavily flawed. So, we had to go back and kind of like nitpick a little things because it didn't fully focus on the student-teacher relationship. It kind of drifted off to different conversations that were happening, which tended to happen because student-teacher relationships, we kind of drift off in different conversations.
Is there any discussion? All those in favor? That motion passes 5-0. Next up is approval of sixth through 8th grade band curricular materials. As you know, we have a very strong um performing arts and middle school is where the formal performing arts begins. Um and so we are bringing this is our this is for intermediate um band and so they just have the recommendation of the essential technique book and then a fresh approach for the beginning per percussion class um through JD JW pepper >> board members I'll entertain a motion >> I move the board of school trustees approve essential technique and a fresh approach for beginning percussion classes as band curriculum resour resources as presented. >> Second >> motion by Jennifer, seconded by Kim.
I can zoom in from home. Cuz I don't I mean, I don't Even if it's a seven Even if it's a seven and you wanted to zoom in, you can do that. But, I mean, it's it's whatever you guys wanted to do. What's the 27th? You got a conflict? Well, the 27th would be fine. I I'm just You're just saying to get it in there quicker. But, that Does that give you enough time to If we did it on the 22nd, I mean, these guys got I just reached out to these guys this afternoon and they got back to me. Okay. So, I can reach out to a couple two or three others to try to get some more um bids and numbers and if they don't respond in you know, in a time, then we move forward with it. But, that would give me enough time to try to at least get some contact information from Midwest Energy just to see if they'd be interested in any part of Mhm.
Um however, we wanted to pinpoint main issues and things we wanted to focus to improve on, such as hands-on activities, feeling present in the classroom, um expectations. I know a lot of students talked about how they um wanted to feel more seen when they didn't feel like they're 100%, especially with their current day with technology, everyone so often led to go to their phones. And with this new phone policy, a lot of students feel like um uh a way to kind of escape from the classroom sometimes is taken away from them, especially some students like to pop in their headphones and listen to music when they feel a little overstimulated. And we kind of talked about communicating with our teachers and how we can find a space to communicate that, "Hey, like, I'm having a bad day today. Can I pop in my headphones? I'm not trying to be disrespectful towards you." And kind of start that relationship from the beginning.
Is there any discussion? All those in favor? That motion passes by zero. Next up is the approval of eighth grade social studies curricular materials. >> Okay. In this one, I think when uh we put out and if parents wanted to participate, I think the title really intrigued some people when they saw it was two miserable presidents and a lot of interest. I think I mean it's not about our current, it's really about um our um it's about the civil war, but I think it brought a lot of interest um into there. We had a lot of parent engagement around this one. And so we're recommending for eighth grade social study. This is a com a compendium to go with our already adopted resource and it's two miserable presidents. The amazing ter amazing terrible and totally true story of the civil war. I I move the board of school trustees approve two miserable presidents.
these to bring that cost down. Yeah. Yeah. So. I can meet you in the morning, too. If that would work What day? What about the 20th? I mean, the 22nd would give them more time to schedule. I know you're only talking a couple days, but Still. Yeah. Do we want to do the 22nd at 7:00 in the evening? I mean, I know we got some church things maybe going on, but it's kind of up to you guys if that's what you wanted to do. 22nd at 7:00 here? If you want to do it earlier, I can call. Okay. We do the 22nd at 6:00 and we can I can We'll meet her. We'll meet K and Okay. Does that work? 22nd at 6:00? And So, the agenda item will be review, discussion, and possible action on Yes, on the football lights. Will we do that at the district office or here?
So, we wanted to focus on little areas and little um anecdotes like that to kind of fully understand what students and what teachers feel on either side. That was very very well done. Yeah, thank you. Did your teachers here that Like, did your teachers say >> Um not I don't think they have yet, but I think one of my teachers is going to be really surprised. I think he's really flattered if he were to find out right now. >> [laughter] >> Thank you. Any other questions? No? All right. Thank you again. Yes. Um 9.2 of our committee reports. We had policy and legislative, finance facilities, and equity, learning, and innovation. Um We can start with the policy and legislative. So, what we primarily reviewed at um policy and legislation were the um students' rights and responsibilities. Um part of it was kind of a review, part of it a good portion of it had to do with the updates partic- particularly things like AI and other sorts of uh of e-devices that hadn't been in existence or hadn't been widely used the last time this was reviewed.
the amazing, terrible, and totally true story of the Civil War for the middle school social studies adoption as presented. >> I can second. >> Motion by Mike, seconded by Josh.
Um We could We could do it either place. Here would We could do it here and it'd be fine. 22nd, Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. Can you do that, Nicole? Here, cuz I can. Here. Here. Is there any other information besides that that you think would be helpful that we can gather? And we try to get as many bids as we can, some local from Kansas. Um if there's a couple other There's a couple other places uh schools that have within the past couple years that have got new football lights or new stadium lights and I can reach out to them and see who they went with and how their experience was. Um Three's the minimum. Right. And then um we'll try to get some information back from Midwest Energy as well. Perfect. Okay. And that's going to they'll be more efficient, too. They will be.
So, it's it's basically pretty extensive. Um the board will be reviewing it for information at the next meeting. And then we will be voting on approval uh the following meeting. There were also some items from press that we needed to go to to go over. However, we really focused on um we really focused on the rights and responsibilities. Great. And the next go to finance finance and facilities. I don't know. I wasn't there. Oh, oh that's right. You weren't there. Nice. Nice. You guys started after I was at the other one. Started after mine. >> Yeah, finance and facilities was it >> It was like the fastest Yeah. It was very efficient. It was very efficient. We had an extremely finance extremely efficient finance and facilities meeting. Uh basically went what we went over was uh were Medicaid reimbursements. Um through submitting requests etc. Um it it we can be entitled to or we are entitled to as much as as close to a million dollars in Medicaid reimbursement from the state.
Is there any discussion? All those in favor? >> Just think there should be a really uh interesting title every year to get all the parents coming, >> right? That's what we need to do. Mrs. Smith, did you have a comment? >> Yeah, I just appreciate the opportunity because I got the parents where um where Mr. invited any parents that wanted to read the book to read it. So I really appreciate that we were given the opportunity to read it before presenting it. >> That's a good point. That was for parents and guardians, not correct just the school board members. So awesome. Thank you. Let's revote just in case just since we >> All those in favor that motion passes 5-0. Thank you. Next up is approval of high school sports photography and fiber arts curricular materials. Okay. So, now we're moving up to the high school.
And and we're won't be going We'll only be going back with four poles. Yeah. I mean, we won't be going back with the six or eight or any I guess it will be I mean, all of these both of these have four poles [clears throat] on them, so. So, I guess one other question that came up just for kind of covering bases. Um Do those lights get used more than just four games a year? More than just four times a year? So, I know we use them some mornings in the fall when we have cross country practice, we turn those on so the kids can see where they're running. Mhm. Um I won't say every day, but I know they use them for that. I think that they used them for flag football maybe once this year when they hosted a flag football deal in one evening.
Uh which is wonderful. However, um the state doesn't write a check for that amount and send it to us. Um it's really um sporadic. The state sends us money when pretty well when they please. Um so, it's not something that we can say, you know, these funds will be here on X date. Um it can go beyond a particular fiscal year. So, um number one in spite of all that, number one, we want to make sure that we're up to speed in um submitting all the reimbursements that we're entitled to uh because that's part that we can control. So, it's a pretty it's a it's a fairly big number. It's just timing. I was looking it was 21,000 two years ago and almost a million. So. And part of that has to be has to do with the fact that we're submitting more. We're keeping better records.
And I do think that's a good point. I'm glad you said that, Mrs. Smith. So, any uh when we reached out to parents, we were really broad. So, if it was eighth grade social studies, we and we reached out to all seventh grade kids because they would be in eighth grade social studies. So, um to show that book or you'll hear we're going to talk about some 12th grade English books. And again, we shared those titles with every single parent um and they that current juniors that would have this next year and try and engage the families there. So, I'm glad you pointed that out. Um so, at the high school level, you know, we have um several subject areas and the first one is arts and that's sports photography and fiber arts. And again, you'll see these are curriculum and open sources. So in a lot of our classes uh we don't always we can't find that right sometimes resource or textbook that matches the needs but we have very uh we have great teachers who are very knowledgeable in their craft or in their area and the um there's a lot of resources out there and so they have curate curated their own resources and we've done this before.
But, I don't know that they would have had to turn those on. It was just at the very end. Um But, then the other item is just during home football games. >> Well, we're when they practice football in the morning, when it's too hot. Well, and we're having them extra games with them other schools, aren't we? Yeah, but those are in the afternoon. Yeah, we moved them in the afternoon so they wouldn't have to worry about like light fees or anything else like that, but Do you have to host it? Right. The only bad bad part about it is, yeah, it's only a few games, but it would I just can't imagine having to bring in rental lights for a football game. Like, I just would think that would be so embarrassing to have to do that. >> Well, and it's a safety deal, right now.
And where it's it's my understanding that it should be sustainable thing that we can do into the future. It sounds like yeah. So, that we have the the knowledge base. All right. Um and then the ELI meeting. Um how was that meeting? We we heard the presentation from our um lovely SSAC members or our student board members. Um so, a lot of what they summarized we were able to talk to them about that uh and their successful lunch and learns and things that we've learned and also next steps. Um and then we got an update um or like a check-in kind of on our um data system that we've adopted at EduClimber. Um and how that um kind of a timeline of how we're getting data into that system and how we're going to be using it and training and professional development that's going to happen around that so that um the right people have access to the right data at the right time.
This isn't like a brand new thing, but it always hasn't gone through this full process. And we wanted to again be as transparent as possible and take it through the full process. So you'll see sports photography and fiber arts. What you're do you're adopting is their the GBC that they have created. We're not just purchasing something. We have created um and curated are the the resources for this class. And we're not doing it to save money. We're doing this because it's the way to best meet our students needs. Board members, I will entertain a motion. >> I move the board of school trustees approve the curriculum and open sources for the sports photography and fiber arts courses as presented. >> Second. >> Motion by Jennifer, seconded by Mike.
