close nominations at this point I'll call for a vote as they see you on the screen I'll give me a second I'd want to double check um do we have uh Council not at this time all right all right I'll go in close nomination and then uh move forward with the with the vote uh all those in favor well sorry about that I'll go ahead and call call it fine as I see you board member yes board member Min Pam I at this point it's all right now I'll go ahead and call you as I see you is there any uh let me see a board member Min fam I remember Chavez I remember aye or remember yes and with my self-porting eye motion passes now all right um there is an opportunity for a discussion of modifications of the agenda under uh item 1.06 uh is there any modifications to the agenda that board members would like to considered all right seeing none then I'm going to go ahead and I'm gonna ask for a couple of modifications because we do have a couple of uh several special guests I want to go ahead and move some items over to the early part of the agenda so they can go ahead and um and be able to speak so I'm going to ask that uh item 4.06 to um media laughter to 1.0 after 1.06 that we hear 4.06 um excuse me can you repeat that I couldn't hear you sorry I'm asking that the board uh where we're gonna I'm asking that we move up item 4.06 which is a resolution for the Workman alone Federal recognition we have a representative uh from the tribe and I would like to take the opportunity to uh be able to have them speak to this item early on um and uh uh well remember you'll be okay with 4.07 following that uh yeah absolutely uh yeah oh give me a second um I sorry about that I was off uh yeah yeah all right number One never mind okay 4.06 and then 4.07 right after because there are other speakers as well that are possibly going to be uh showing up so uh is that uh is there a consensus yes all right discussion action modification the agenda um at this point is there a public comment hello board president uh we have one speaker uh first speaker is Karen McDonald uh Karen you have two minutes please submute yourself when you begin speaking the timer will begin people all right this is the time for us to do the comments for this is uh to speak specifically to the discussion and modifications of the agenda okay I didn't see it okay all right um all right so we'll go ahead and move on to seeing that there's no other uh of a comment go ahead and move on to item 4.06 at this moment um and um item 4.06 is the resolution is brought forward and the subject is approved the resolution and p20-2122 supported the restoration of the federal recognition alone Indian tribe of San Francisco Bay area at this point uh Jose would you be able to bring forward Charlene esport president foreign you're now a panelist um and I'll go ahead and recognize you uh briefly I just wanted to introduce the resolution and uh Charlene can speak more in depth to it this is uh Alan morocc's effort to lend support to the efforts of the re-recognition of of the of the Ohlone tribe Charlene uh feel free to um uh step in and provide uh further details yes um thank you uh thank you all for having me on this evening and and um hearing our plight you know for federal recognition and actually considering uh providing um a resolution and a letter of support um for our efforts um I I want to touch on why um and what federal recognition means to the molecma people um Federal recognition means access you know to Federal funding for health care housing assistance education as well as access you know to other Federal contracts and grants only available to federally recognized tribes um you know even though our community our moekma community is is stronger now than ever you know revitalizing our languages our language and our cultural practices such as our dances and our ceremonies without Federal recognition we will not be able to restore our inherent right of self-determination you know meaning self-governing ourselves on our our lands um our you know sovereignty was promised to uskma our distinct community in perpetuity and it was the government that broke those promises especially molecmas people um you know our goal is to keep our people in our 10 000 year old ancestral Homeland and to do that we need Federal recognition no because of the cost of living in the Bay Area is pushing us further and further away from our homelands and I again I want to thank Alum Rock School Board for bringing this item and and and hopefully voting to approve um you know a resolution and a letter in support of our our sovereignty thank you Charlene I appreciate you making the time to come and speak and inform the public about um the situation that the uh alone you are facing here in the Bay Area um at this point I'll go ahead and take um board member I don't know what uh uh would you mind uh holding off to to after we take the public comment or do you want to speak right now sure I can wait whatever if it makes sense to speak right now let me know I can wait okay uh any members of the public wishing to speak to this item please do so now by indicating by raising your hand at this point I don't see any members of the public well say do you see anybody wishing and indicating their desire to speak uh no poor president at this time I don't see any public comment all right see none then at this point we'll go back to comments for members of the board uh we'll remember thank you um and I just wanted to acknowledge uh president Quintero um you know of you bringing this forward um and asking you to join in presenting this resolution and there was a no-brainer to me um I absolutely um believe in all of it you know I'm glad that we've uh already passed the resolution to include the land acknowledgments and you know all the things that we've already done um and you know I think this shows actions in that we're not just one of those that will included you know land acknowledgment and then check off that box um that we are really about uh making a difference and I'm doing what we can in order for um the Maloney to receive federal recognition um and so thank you Andres for taking leadership on this item um and including me to present this resolution um I as an ally of the Maloney you know um this is the least we can do and I look forward to um doing more you know as much as I can to support them in getting this uh Federal recognition so um I will happily and uh very um uh wholeheartedly vote Yes on this item thank you and thank you Charlene for being on this meeting thank you uh but remember yes thank you president Quintero so um my thoughts on this particular resolution is uh first and foremost I to to borrow a word wholeheartedly support this um Spirit of this resolution and and the intent of the resolution uh but before I'm I'm uh I'm say where you know well I guess I'll say that I'm I'm wary as a board member of us as a board um bringing resolutions that may not have at least as far as I can see at this time a direct connection to our students I think we're here for um to serve our students and our families and and at the end of the day to improve the academic um you know reality of our district and so um I'm not I couldn't tell you I don't know if we have a any more students in our district or um any that are officially recognized by the tribe but what I would say in order for the to make this feel more comfortable for me um because I agree with um trustee Elena that we should demonstrate that we are about the action behind I mean I don't think we should just put resolutions just to express an opinion um of abort of our board unless it's tied to something that's beneficial to our students um or or clearly beneficial so I would suggest or I would propose that we add a now um and now therefore something to the extent of the recognition of the moekma aloni will be intentionally incorporated into our ethnic studies program or something that we can directly tie this resolution and our support of it to the education of our students so that you know I don't I'm not comfortable mandating every class to have to you know follow a very strict set of guidelines or how they go about it but I think it's important that we go beyond just this acknowledgment at a kind of 30 000 foot level and actually tie it to our students so um I believe trustee Lord as the one who is bringing this resolution so I would propose that we add some language to directly tie um the the struggle and and the and the fight of the moek Moloney um to the education of our students through the ethnic studies program and for me that would I would feel more comfortable um in that this resolution is something that is tied to our students and not just and they're not saying that to minimize it when I say the word just but it's not just a statement by the board it's a statement by the board tied to the education of um the students in the district so just to respond to that um I I'm I'm I agree with uh I think I mean I just want to kind of direct us to what we passed on the 26th of October where it specifically highlighted some of the information that you're saying but I think we need to repeat it and that's fine we should um you know put that put language like that in there and then also maybe I would add um to submit a letter on behalf of the board um you know to be appropriate to Deborah Holland I believe would be the appropriate uh person to submit the letter to so it we can list the actions in there I'm okay or we can do it um and I think the only thing that I will mention as a descendant of the Regatta nation is that it does something when um you know our children are recognized so are there more Maloney I'm sure there are I couldn't tell you right now how many but the fact that we have um you know recognition for our indigenous peoples of this land does something for the rest of us who are um you know indigenous and so I know when I found out about that connection in my adulthood um what that did for me I can only imagine of our children in schools um when they learn about you know things like that and um really enhancing their educational experience and uh just building that confidence um and so is it directly related not really but is it related yes it is and I I definitely understand that we're not just going to be you know doing resolutions just because um but definitely you know ensuring that it does something for the education of all of our children here in alamat um but those are the only since I'll add and so I'm okay with adding it I don't know if um if if we need to add the specific language language now or um if it's actions because I know that you are okay with ensuring that I know it was covered on the 26th of October can you refresh my memory roughly what was the action that you're referring to in the 26th of October resolution let me go through it it doesn't have to be exact but just I don't recall specifically what the kind of action things were yeah let me let me and and while you're looking if I could just respond quickly um president Quintero um if that's okay just uh I think you mentioned it to me that it's almost a bigger picture thing too you totally stated it by saying that you know my opinion is that as a board I think we just want to be judicious about the resolutions that we bring um because I think our role here is is fairly specific and um and this is important I I don't mean to minimize this particular item it's very important and I support it I just would like to um tie it to the education of of the students so that it directly ties with our role as board members so that's it that's I don't know do you have a response really quick and I gotta get to boardroom Travis okay so is it okay to respond to yeah uh go ahead and respond so one of the whereas uh the lmrock Union Elementary School District is committed to enhancing equity and diversity and remains dedicated to providing schools with the resources and supports to advance the ethnic studies courses and curriculum curriculum so it's it's very broad it doesn't say specifically what the district is going to do um so maybe we need to include that it just you know mentions the ethnic studies curriculum but that's one of the whereas all right uh border Chavez Here Comes um when I first seen never seen item 406 the first thing I thought of what does this have to do with education and educating the Alum Rock students if it was about Reading Writing science math um I would be on board right away but I think we need to deal with matters of the district and not political um things that haven't directly correlated to the education of these children thank you um I'm gonna go ahead and speak right after superintendent superintendent just to remind the board in addition to what trustee and this is just to remind the board of what you approved October 26th it was um there's an a sentence saying that now therefore it be it resolved that the Alum Rock Elementary School District recognizes the importance of teaching Native Studies to all students and supports the district's ethnic studies steering committee ongoing work in making that a reality for all students and be it further resolve that the Board of Trustees of the Alum Rock Elementary School District those hereby acknowledge that the district schools and Facilities sit on traditional lands of the aloni people and the Board of Trustees further acknowledges with respect and reverence people thrive of the San Francisco Bay area and the stewardship of these lands all right I'm going to go ahead and I'm going to make my comments at this point so that I can go ahead and provide some explanation I brought this forward in collaboration with a board member and the intention was and it's based off of my experience in Alan Walker and the fact that I grew up and I went to school with uh members of the Illinois tribe that were students in Alum Rock I know individuals and families who lived here for Generations in Alum Rock uh and uh they are alone and so I'm basing that off of my experience and my knowledge of the and it's in line with what um what what it's written the resolution the acknowledgment that the eloni are here they never left and uh we are attempting to go ahead and support people who are part of our school district who are attempting to go ahead and erase that second class status that the federal government has placed upon the only tribe and so I have I I understand that there should that ideally in an Ideal World we'd go ahead and make a connection to a direct Connection in the classroom the connection is there in the fact that our students who are alone who are going to our classrooms every day uh would benefit from the recognition that the federal government should provide to the tribe and so the the connection the Nexus is is right there already in the students who are are attending uh our school district that we should be supporting much like um on Asian American uh uh uh month um the the Latino Hispanic Heritage Month uh similar to those resolutions that may not have a direct connection to uh education about no recognizing cultures and so in this way I do not find uh I don't find it inappropriate to uh move forward with the what the resolution as is because we are uh coming forward and stepping up and supporting a large-skill effort uh and it's not just us it's a lot of other organizations that they're asking support from and the greatest and most formal position that a board can take is through a formal resolution so rather than putting forward a letter signed by somebody from the district a resolution States the position of a public school board uh with regard to the request that's being made of the federal government by the Ohlone tribe so all right um I forgot who I was supposed to acknowledge first uh oh yeah so um again I don't want to admit I just don't want it to be miscon misconstrue my intentions behind this it has absolutely nothing to do with the specifics of this resolution itself um if if that is the kind of connection that you're making the Nexus that we do indeed have my wife Maloney students then I would um you know I personally would feel more comfortable if that was stated somewhere where it says it was like whereas students of Alum Rock this school district will benefit from the support or something along those lines or the first sentence of what Dr Bower said which we already approved um of something along the lines of um you know we let me let me help teach Native Studies and then my final just to close my comments um whether we decide to that that would be my preference I will support this resolution um regardless of what we decide but as I mentioned I think my comments um and I hear what you say president Quintero but I just want I just want us to be wary of or judicious like I said about the kinds of resolutions that we bring and not that this is a bad resolution again but just that we it's related to the work that we do as a board and if it's the relationship is there as it seems to be here tonight then absolutely we should um bring items and and stand up for those things and support them so let me help you out with this and hopefully this this uh will make you feel more comfortable this is the fourth where I ask Indian tribe was never terminated and their members still live in their average Aboriginal Homeland today which includes Alum Rock School District here area um working within their own Community to strengthen ties to local universities local government and Community groups and schools does that provide some a stronger connection yeah that's fine again I again I don't want it's not a the moekma Alone part of it is not the part of it that I'm kind of wanting to just put out there a little bit tonight so I support that and I will vote in support of this because of my support so I'll go in that language that would be good for me but even without it I would be supportive of the resolution uh all right so for the benefit of money management teaching notes um after Aboriginal Homeland if you could comma which includes Alum Rock School District uh working within their own communities local government schools and Community groups and I hope I didn't go too fast there all right uh board member Chavez uh to me this just isn't the appropriate platform thank you understood you stood against the previous uh resolution so I was not expecting support on this one all right yes okay thank you all for indulging me in this conversation I think that dialogue is healthy and it's good and uh you know I think that if we wind up with a better product if we if we're talking through so appreciate the comments uh at this point um I believe I was there probably on here previously on this item no no nothing we asked for it I don't think there was any public comment yeah okay all right uh Jose is there any public comment uh yes board President we have two speakers uh first speaker is Mr Victor Mr Victor Vasquez Mr Vazquez you have two minutes please send me yourself when you begin speaking the timer will begin good evening Alum Rockford trustee superintendent I want to just start by saying thank you for bringing forward this resolution that acknowledges the current people whose land we sit on and also the connection between Alum Rock and the Native American Maloney community it's almost Mayfair we we've been we believe that this is very important not just and it's not a political statement but rather an opportunity for you all to continue to teach our students what it means to have diversity and also be sensitive to the communities that sometimes are not heard in our in our neighborhood neighboring San Jose Community so I encourage you to like continue to move forward with this resolution and explore Partnerships with the Mike Maloney Community to bring forward the teachings and like not into the classroom or curriculum or to the staff as well because those students are very well also in our community not only here in Milpitas San Jose throughout throughout this area so I want to thank you for bringing forth this resolution to the board tonight thank you so much next speaker thank you Mr Vazquez our next speaker is Veronica Talton Miss Talton you have two minutes please submit yourself when you begin speaking the timer will begin good evening board president board trust Board of Trustees superintendent Bower and community members uh tonight I would like to stand in solidarity with this resolution that is being put forth and I am speaking as one of the co-leads of the racial Equity committee for this District I think that the Erasure of indigenous people and people of color continues to occur this is not a political statement this is educating our entire School Community about the importance of acknowledging human life and our school sites sit upon the land of the moekma alone people many people live in the area where the mechma Ohlone people traditionally resided and whether there is only one student or one thousand it is important that we acknowledge the contributions of the moekma aloni people and honor the work that is being done of the racial Equity committee who does land acknowledgments regularly and the ethnic studies committee I find it very disturbing that there is any opposition whether little or a lot and I'm hoping that the education of what land acknowledgments are and the furthering of this for all of our students and appreciating diversity and inclusion will continue and I proudly say to those who know that I'm a racial Equity leader that Alum Rock has no pushback and that we acknowledge all human life thank you very much for listening I hope that this will be put forth thank you Miss Sultan our next speaker is Miss tilsa you have two minutes please submit yourself when you begin speaking the timer will begin foreign my name is Lisa Gonzalez I am a community organizer but I'm also a parent of two students in the Olympus School District I am here to say thank you to uh Corine and I'm president I'm Andres Quintero for bringing this resolution forward I am I am in discontent hearing some people saying this is political move this is not a political um there's not political at all these shows our kids every day that they matter that our ancestry matter and our culture matters this is a learning opportunity for our students our teachers and our parents to acknowledge the land that we've done on but also to acknowledge that our my work and learning um are still here are still present and I would like to Echo what everybody else said but also said this today is a learning experience for our students today we applaud um and Andres Quintero for bringing this resolution forward I can wait what else we can do when we talk about Unity we talk about bringing everybody together and talking about every single culture ancestors on the table thank you have a really good evening thank you Miss Lisa our next speaker is Caitlin ceremiento you have two minutes please submit yourself when you begin speaking the timer will begin hi thank you for the opportunity to share I'm a teacher at Renaissance Academy at Fisher and we were fortunate enough to be able to help pilot the ethnic studies program this year and I want to say that I completely agree with all of all of you who said the importance of teaching our students about the Milwaukee tribe um like one of the last speakers said it doesn't matter if it's one student it doesn't matter if it's 100 students it doesn't matter if it's a thousand for that one student it makes a difference and makes them feel heard seen and valued and for all the other students who are not from that tribe not from that background and gives them the opportunity to learn why that person is important what is special about them what contributions their people have given to our society um with our ethnic studies teacher at Renaissance at Fisher Luvia Solis I want to give a shout out I'm super proud to say that our students are 8th graders at Renaissance at Fisher know about the Milwaukee tribe because they've learned about it and they are proud to talk about the land that we stand on um so I really hope that this resolution moves forward and thank you to all of the ethnic studies and racial Equity leaders in our district foreign for president at this time we have no more public comment all right if you know uh other speakers we'll go ahead and call upon uh if there's no further comments from remember the board we'll go ahead and call for a vote uh uh board member Madam I just want to make it clear that I don't think this is a political thing I'm not sure um how my my colleagues are feeling about I just um to the to the comments that we heard I think it's important that we connect things to the teaching of our students this is certainly whether there's one student a thousand or zero as the previous speaker said it's important that everyone learns about it and that's why I just was wanting to be intentional about including that but I um I support it so that's it thank you all right uh for the comments for the board so you know that at this point I'll go and call for a vote I'll call you as a CU board member fan I board member Chavez no board member aye hi and with myself well now this motion passes four uh to one um with uh Chavez descent all right all right uh moving on to item try it on 4.07 give me a quick second I'm trying to scan and see if there's can I make a motion to approve not yet I'm not taking motions at this point um I have uh uh a guest who um was going to go ahead and speak to this item sure uh Adam are you here no if you are raise your hand if not then I'll go ahead and touch upon this item right now and uh we'll go ahead and move forward um item 4.07 is resolution for the uh designation of the Mosaic that is uh housed at uh we used to be San Antonio San Antonio elementary you can actually see it uh in my background it's a mosaic that was built in the late 60s uh by students and um one of those students was going to be here uh to go ahead and speak about his experience I mean actually helped him build the mosaic um there was a in a um an individual who was part of this and she submitted her testimonial writing so I'll go ahead and read her letter uh for the amendment for the board good morning uh good evening honorable members of The Honorable board members my name is uh we're not being able to attend this evening uh this this evening's board meeting to address my voice of why the Mosaic San Antonio elementary school strawberry should be protected now the second uh greater when staff invited us the students to be part of the building of this Mosaic I did not understand its meaning its purpose or its Mission but one thing for sure was when this project was done how product felt that had been part of it As I Grew Older I had my kids introduced them to the Mosaic I told them how productive I I felt that my little hands have been part of building this beautiful music then I did the same thing with my grandkids my oldest grandson said it doesn't surprise me grandma because that is how you've lived your life doing community service his words hit me and I realized that I had lived my uh my life doing community service I worked as a teacher's aide for eastside Union High School District for 12 years helping students working with parents teaching ESL classes I then went to work for the city of San Jose district 7 for nine years with the community liaison my job was to organize sorry about that my job was to organize the neighborhood so they would be heard and get the services they needed and they deserve after I finished 14 years of service at the county of Santa Clara working with our elected officials continuing the same kind of service but for instance we're so right it's like a quote by Alex Haley in every conceivable manner family is the link to our past pretty sure future truly this Mosaic Mission influenced me an impact in my life can you imagine how many other students might have been impacted or have been impacted in the past 57 years uh it's more than a mosaic it's history exposure Enlightenment and inspiration for generations to pass its mission on to the Future Generations the family is linked to our past pretty sure future if anything restorative thank you for your time on this very important issue may you make the right decision because you're you're in a position of continuing great work so um I introduced this item I think that uh the Mosaic is important um and it is uh necessary to go ahead and protect those things that uh denote and uh let us know about our past about our our community unfortunately in recent history we've seen in recent times we've seen the uh The Disappearance of murals all over the east side uh from one day to the other they're gone this is a mosaic so they'd have a little bit more trouble uh getting rid of it too fast nevertheless uh because of uh The Disappearance of mosaics I thought it was important to bring this forward I brought it forward a while ago but uh probably a year year and a half ago or two years ago I lost track of time here uh and uh it hadn't moved forward so at this point I'd like to move forward on a standalone basis I hope that my colleagues have read the the resolution and uh are aware of the protections that I'm asking for uh it's a significant um you know artwork and as you've seen in the testimony for somebody who was there when it was built um and uh and somebody who in in many of us who passed by and have seen it and have been inspired by it I think it's important for for it to be protected at this point we'll go ahead and welcome comments from members of the board I see board member Chavez as her hand up board member checklist I'm happy to say that this was done by Alan Rock students and yes I would be supporting this and um I asked Dr Bauer about this one that we make sure that all of the uh languages in the uh contract to protect it should it later on be rented out or something thank you uh board membership is just a um respond to that one of the Clauses here clearly uh speaks to that and this is be it for the resolve that any and all protections and requirements outlined this resolution show apply to said mosaic by the Union Elementary School District and any more potential future tenants of that particular address just through FYI on that uh boardroom yes okay thank you Mr President uh you know I too want to add my uh voice in support of this resolution I believe that it's important for this District to be mindful of its history and this Mosaic represents a point in time in this District's history when uh you know uh the the Latino Community um grew and uh uh became a this uh uh was a distinct uh part of this community and I think that uh that moment in time should be preserved for future generations and also uh I wanted to note that uh this is also a piece of work a piece of artwork by students of the Alum Rock Union Elementary School District and uh where we are able to preserve uh unique pieces of artwork by our students um we we should Endeavor to do so not not just out of the preservation history but also uh as a teaching uh teaching tool uh for our future students who are so artistically inclined thank you very much foreign but you're on mute thank you um so yeah I just want to add uh uh I want to say thank you uh or president candeto for bringing this forward um you know as an adult now um and member of the east side for a long time I can think of um other you know murals that were unfortunately um painted over you know of deals that that put their love and um medicine onto those beautiful walls you know and I would hate for any more to be gone you know that my daughter wouldn't be able to see those or experience those for our future Generations so um I will definitely support this and um just with that I'll make a motion um to support this resolution at this time oh oh all except that motion is there a second we'll continue the discussion amongst board members uh board members yeah um I want to first and foremost thank you president Quintero for for bringing this resolution not only the resolution itself but in reading through it it's it's very thorough it's very well thought out um and I think that's important for something like this because should it ever come down to it you know we want to make sure that we have robust language and and a robust um you know proposal here that would that that would guide the decision that would be made at some hypothetical future point so thank you for the work that you put into bringing this to us um I you know for on a personal level for as a young person you know I always know of and and this is this is the you know part of what you would say is part of the East the fabric of the East Side um and so I know passing by I always felt that when I left to college or whatever like there's there's certain landmarks that any area has that ties you culturally historically to that area and this for us this is one of them um and I think that's it's important that we preserve these that there was a to um comment that one of the murals that was erased um on Sunset and Alum Rock at a building there um at one point I worked with at-risk youth in that building and we actually um had a lot of our youth or youth that were in programming there I should say with us um and they were the ones that painted that mural myself and a bunch of you know youth that we had who excitedly and proudly painted that mural and and it hurts me to this day that that's not there you know I'm getting chills right now just thinking about that and so with you know the influx of new people potentially coming into our area with development and all the things that we may be foreseen in the future it's critical that we um do preserve those landmark pieces of our area and there's not many school districts I don't think that can say that they actually have one of those landmarks as part of their district and and so for those reasons I think it's imperative that we um do something like this and I'll support this resolution tonight thank you for bringing it all right um all right uh is there any oh you know what I I did not take public comment yet correct what's that do you remember correct uh President we have not taken uh thank you at this point uh there's a motion there's a res um there's a motion and a second I'll take public and at this time I see uh one speaker you have two minutes please I meet yourself when you begin speaking the timer will begin good evening members of the board Theresa Gonzalez once again I just want to say thank you um president Andres Quintero for bringing this forward for our kids and I work and our community it is important to preserve our history is important to preserve our art and um art that represents our community I have I have seen also several murals that have been erased um or painted over and it erase parts of us so I just want to say thank you thank you for all the trustees I hear your comments thank you for first for um supporting this motion and um that's it thank you Miss Lisa at this time we have no more public comment all right Doug before I call the vote I just like to appreciate the support that I've heard thus far um I'd like to speak to the Mosaic myself I'm uh San Antonio was my elementary school and uh the words there that are at the bottom were in Spanish and they were uh words that I could read uh and that I could understand as a kid because Spanish was my first language up until I was in the second or third grade is when I although I was born here in the east side uh Spanish is my first language and I didn't speak English until I was in the second or third grade in where I can perform like fully you know get the language and so it was very welcoming to see those large words in Spanish as you're walking into your school that you belong At This Place acknowledges Your Existence in your culture and so for me it's very very important that future Generations have that same ability to be welcomed into into this area into to that school um all right thank you very much at this point I don't see uh comments from members of the board uh and so Xenon then I'll go ahead and call for a vote I was calling you as I see you board member Pam I remember Chavez hi I remember I don't know what I'm board member hi uh with uh myself winning I the motion passes unanimously thank you for the support uh moving on to item number two uh request to address the board this provides members of the public opportunity to speak to the board about any matter under the jurisdiction of the board not otherwise on the agenda those who wish to address specific agenda items will have an opportunity to do so when the agenda item is introduced and presented during the meeting individuals wishing to speak or requested to submit a comment I guess when we're in person um or raise your hand uh on the on Zoom um there's a two minute timeline for each speaker the board of automatically for two staff any formal written requests that are brought before them at this time written matters may be placed on a future meeting is there uh members of the public wish you to speak if you do please raise your hand we'll say please uh take a public comment yes for president at this time we have one speaker first uh or our only speaker is Miss Sandra Miss Sandra you have two minutes please submit yourself when you begin speaking the timer will begin hello thank you very much for your time my name is Sandra Coons and I am a fourth grade teacher at Hubbard I would like to speak about the importance of having smaller class sizes as well as establishing a limit on the number of students for fourth grade and above in Alum Rock despite the declining enrollment that is challenging our district fourth grade at Hubbard is currently at capacity we have two fourth grade classes with 31 students and a fourth fifth grade combo with 28 students and fact for quite a while this school year I had 32 students I have students reading at the kindergarten level all the way through students reading at a fifth grade level this is not atypical based on my nine years in Alum Rock as a fourth and fifth grade teacher I see this range in levels on a regular basis as a teacher I do differentiate and I use small groups but there is only so much differentiation I can do with small groups my back table only seats five students that means I have to have seven small groups this year and I would prefer even less this year due to covet and safety protocols I am doing a great disservice and dishonor to my students because there are simply too many of them with too many needs all of our classes within Alum Rock should have additional human support like Perros in our classrooms we don't need just more programs we need more people and I'd like to take the last few moments to commend and thank our administrators Jonathan natividad and Olga Martinez for the amazing support that they have been providing us this year despite being in classrooms subbing most of the time I cannot imagine getting through this year without their help and their support thank you to them both and thank you to all of you for your time and for listening thank you Miss Koontz our next speaker is Jessica levodi miss livoti you have two minutes please submit yourself when you begin speaking the timer will begin foreign hello can you hear me now yes perfect um yes I'm Jessica levodi I am an rrsp teacher at Linda Vista I am a and here to address the board and Dr Hilaria Bauer to stress the importance of settling our contract and as you probably all know we are now work to rule as a district and it is imperative that we settle our contract for smaller class sizes safer schools and a better wage a living wage who wants to come to one of the lowest paid districts and teach a when inflation and is going Sky High we need our piece of the pie you are getting over five percent in Cola every year you are increasing your save your savings as a district and we deserve a piece of that you can't keep cramming our classrooms full of students and telling us to take professional development when you're not giving us the support the supplies and the Personnel that we need and so please settle our contract and to piggyback off of Sandra Kuhn at Linda vesto we would not be where we are without our principal Mr Gomez he's been nothing but incredible during all of this subbing supporting us and so again settle our contract so we can have a hopefully a better remainder of the school year thank you thank you miss livoti our next speaker is Danielle Banderas Ms Banderas you have two minutes please submit yourself you begin speaking the timer will begin down hi um good evening board members Dr Bauer and the public my name is Danielle d'ambrosio teacher at Lindale for this is my 21st year of teaching um I would like to say many things tonight and the first thing I would like to say is that at the last board meeting I did not appreciate the tone about changing The Narrative of what is happening in Alum Rock so we have a side of Alum Rock where let's say my fourth graders for example are I have half of my class in band we have the best music provider the best art teacher the best PE prep provider we have little Heroes we have happy students we have happy Parents they are learning and thriving yes that is all happening um but there's the other narrative board members and Dr Bauer where I've been here 21 years and this is 21 years of the same when it comes to bargaining and negotiating and you always make us beg for it you don't have a leg to stand on when the state gives you the cola of 5.07 ongoing that keyword there people ongoing and then next year another projected 5.38 ongoing on top of the 5.07 so it's really not a good look and if you would like to change the narrative start tonight have the conversation let's get this settled fairly this is becoming just not okay and I would also like to say I also didn't like the tone at the last board meeting of like yeah well if you have to move or you have to leave or you have to quit like do what you need to do and do it for your family like yeah I get it what are you going to do when you have teachers leaving in Mass Exodus and you can't get anyone to work here attract and re thank you miss the Ambrosio our next uh speaker is Gail larocca miss larocca you have two minutes please submit yourself when you begin speaking the timer will begin hello can you hear me yes we can hear you okay good evening hi um I've been wanting to talk to all of you for many many times um I've spoken and I'm glad I have the opportunity um what the last speaker the teacher I'm a teacher at Meyer Elementary I'm currently uh independent studies um teacher uh but like she had said um she taught for 21 years I've been in this District since 2008 I started teaching in 1996.
[Applause] [Music] will they please come down first okay okay so um these three plus flares were part of our dual sports this year so that they would go and practice with their volleyball football teams every day and then we would hold a separate practice for them afterwards where they would come and run with us and were able to run in several meets throughout the season including our league meet at the end they all did very well they were hard workers each of them will be receiving a provisional letter meaning that if they come out and run cross-country again next year even as a dual runner they will get a letter for both this year and next year um lars van crafter who's not here with us today his best time this year was a 1534 at west franklin and he took tenth at lee megan dunaway her best time was 1747 at iola and she took fifth at league this year ella her best time was 1633 at iowa as well and took second at league and beau his best time was 14 31 at iowa and he also took second athlete these are on a two mile run so congratulations [Applause] now i would like the rest of the cross-country team to come down and line up as well this is kate souter logan ferrara toby acres jaylen [Music] these guys were our full-time runners they came and came to practice every day and ran hard with us each and every day and participated in all the needs they were all today will all letters today tate is a first-year letter winner along with arrington she is a first year letter winner logan kobe jalen and braley were all uh second year returners and we are very appreciative of them tate's best friend was at council grove where he ran two miles in 13 minutes and 37 seconds he took ninth place at leed logan's best time was at council grove as well where he ran 12 minutes and 20 seconds he took sixth place at league kobe his best time was at west franklin where he placed first and he ran it in 12 minutes and seven seconds kobe was second in league barrington's best time was 1636 at emporia where she took seventh at least jalen her best time was 15 minutes and 20 seconds at emporia as well and she took fifth at least and braley hardin's best time was 14 18 out of corey as well where she took third place at lake as well again thank you guys for coming out and running each day and working hard for us and making yourself better at each meet i will give you your certificates and awards as well [Applause] [Music] [Applause] finished oh part of cross country each year we also come up with a theme and usually these are uh thought up by coach coleman and so to get a better explanation of this year's theme um you would have to talk to him but he always talks about your goosebumps and how you feel right before you go compete so this year's theme was goosebump it up and it was on our shirts and um egypt each year we have different meanings behind each of the themes and he's great about coming up with something different that is not seen on many other team shirts so each year this year you guys are also going to get a cup with this year's theme on it as well thank you very much future [Applause] i will let these all right look for football coach schuster is my my assistant coach for the eighth grade we have coach marvel and coach over that help with their seventh grade and they're not here they're over there they'll be doing some finals today maybe our lst's coach probably is watching he's showing movies and social studies but i can't i can't tell you about that anymore but i had some good managers this year caleb robron he was uh our video guy this year and i really appreciate him it was nice to have him up there and sometimes he stayed on the sideline with this video with the ipad and did a great job that does help where's caleb come [Applause] a lot to the on about what they're doing and this is what we're seeing and we need you to do this you know what i can say until i'm blue in the face but then they see it on the video and then they're like okay you know coach's coach is right i need to do that or i need to be in this position and that helped a lot and we appreciate him for uh his hard work and being there every day and we have a manager another manager dayton state melton [Applause] dayton would have played but he had a shoulder injury and has been uh just now kind of getting back into the swing of things and heard it playing some baseball hopefully back and ready to go for me in high school right but dayton the managers for football do a lot of stuff i mean there there's water coolers there's water bottles there's the cups there's the aed there's the football men kids there's the extra jerseys we have to pack in case there's blood there's all the assumption of risk stuff extra towels and putting the balls making sure the football's all aired up there's a lot of stuff making sure everything gets on the van and gets off the van and some of the 8th graders helped but it is it's a chore and he did it mostly by himself he didn't have a helper thomas hudson where's thomas there he is [Applause] and thomas is there and he helps tremendously i think he likes to play a lot of catch with coach var doing that right thomas but uh we enjoy having thomas with us and these guys put in a lot of time just like the players do and they're they're they're every day and we appreciate their help we have a couple other guys that didn't quite make the games whether it was a coven or academics or some other issue but i'd like for them to come down because they were there they they stuck it out um teagan smith jesse milder tristan beatty and adelia riggs [Applause] tristan had a food injury his other guys just had some other things getting away and next year i'm sure they will be back out and they will get their letter all right now we're going to go with our 7th grade our seventh graders finish the season three and four and this group um not enough good words because most of the times they played with eleven kids eleventh we played i think three full football games with only 11 players and if you don't know much about football you play with 11 offensive players and 11 defensive players so they all played both ways and did an amazing job we went and played some other teams that had more players and only want to play two quarters so it was very frustrating at times but these kids battled you know through some soreness through some aches and pains and they made three full games sometimes we had 12 hey we have an extra player okay but i was super proud of their effort at three and four i hope they did a great job um and again some of those losses were like okay it was a two-quarter game well they had 15 guys and we had 11.
do [Music] you me [Music] do [Music] do so do [Music] do i'd like to resume this meeting of the eastern township board of education if you please rise for the pledge of allegiance i pledge allegiance to the god of the united states of america to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all it's weird that's what i was looking at okay the mission of the eastern township school district is to promote excellence in an environment that engages students in meaningful learning experiences in partnership with students dedicated staff families and community the district provides a strong educational foundation that will empower our students to achieve their unique potential embrace self-directed lifelong learning develop the skills necessary for appropriate risk-taking and responsible decision-making respect themselves and others problem solve individually and collaboratively become contributing members of a diverse global society this point in time we're going to be moving into presentations uh dr smith the floor is yours thank you mr pit it's gone all right thank you mr visicaro i would like to recognize a very special student we have with us tonight victoria fluke if she's here and i see your parents with you too why don't everybody come on down that's that's so fantastic so victoria is an incredible artist this is the work that she made come on come on come here this is uh so she won the cooper levinson holiday card contest so the painting that we see here is actually it's not going to be it already is so joanie you want to come over mr joney our board attorney is from cooper levinson so it's very special that he can be with us too so it's actually part of our holiday cards that are going out to all districts that cooper levinson works with and to many other people and this is a certificate for you victoria that mr fiscal if you if you can come over why don't you give that to her yeah mr is ever heart and then i think we have miss gormley her art teacher here ms gormley come on down so just well this woman's walking down i just want to point out this is the seventh year in a row that our district has had a student win this contest and i know last year it's just it's a wonderful kind of deja vu because last year miss cormly was here also because her students won last year too and seventh year seventh year all it's like the yankees and the celtics all together so mr mr mrs flip can you want to come on down if you want to and good evening everyone just so you understand our our holiday card sends out a message regarding a the sponsorship we have of a of an organization called let us eat please where we've partnered with the south jersey food bank to ensure that children in need don't go hungry not only throughout the holiday season but also throughout the year and so this is our way of getting our message across and having this card and having these great artists allow us to do so is really very empowering so in addition to the card and will be getting a plaque and the squirrel will be getting a plaque which will be one of seven that will be displayed in the classroom we also have for you victoria a fifty dollar gift card for you to use and from normally a hundred dollar gift card to continue this great ability and empowering us for a message food insecurity is still a very big issue in fact it's a much bigger issue right now with everything that's going on in the world and to be able to get that message out regarding legacy please in such a wonderful way and with such wonderful art is greatly appreciated so congratulations victoria great job [Applause] do you want to explain to everyone what's going on in your picture um in my picture there is a snowman outside um next to a cabin that i'm assuming the kids in the cabin built um and it's snowing outside because there's no on the ground and that's pretty much it and it's great and what we do is we display these now virtually we used to put them in our conference room but we display them without any names without any school identifiers what have you for all our staff to review and vote on and once again it's a real demonstration to the wonderful students you have the wonderful community have and wonderful staff that you have that you have another winner for the 17 in a row so congratulations [Applause] saw mr hoffman taking a photo there mms principal so in a sense so you could say like the manager of the yankees winning seven years in a row so yes that is it's a great tradition that's about the best watercolor i think i've ever seen actually so we have another presentation this evening ms fleming would you join us up here for a moment so melissa fleming board member this is her last board board meeting tonight so and we wanted to take a moment to recognize you in a time when a day can feel like a month and a month can feel like a year i'd say it's probably been a century that you've been on the board um and um i know for my sake i feel like um hard head your smart head smart heart and kind soul is really i think have been three tremendous assets for all of us on the board as we've navigated the challenges of covid of state aid reductions and so much else so thank you very very much thank you for everything and i think it's important to keep you know doing our civic duty and run to vote definitely and i will miss all of you um even though we've had some challenging times so thank you and i really appreciate the uh acknowledgement thank you very much thanks thanks there's a poinsettia under my do you mind handing that to me just um thank you thank you perfect um it's not a plaque but it starts with a p um [Music] so this is probably would you say this is probably going to be your last board meeting as president you say probably probably i i just want to double check just trying to double check because i i i feel like that's uh you've given a good advance notice of that um and uh it would be so seven years as board president total four four in a row in the last year yeah it's uh it's all it's interestingly it's the exact same number of years that we've been winning the cooper levinson art contest so so um but i just uh i feel this community to take a moment to acknowledge that being on the board is an incredible commitment being the president of the board is a commitment on top of a commitment and i think about the many challenges that we've gone through as a community over that time the many successes and um that your leadership was inseparable from all that and um the uh as i was thinking about like what would symbolize that you know it's like a gavel i think it's kind of like a typical kind of fallback um but actually like i immediately stopped because that's the antithesis of you actually i think a gavel is like someone who wants to stop conversation and you are a listener you know um so you know and why do you listen because you want to help things grow like a plant like people so joe for you buddy thank you um wow i thank you it's very very kind of all of you and um you know uh just uh i want to say really more a couple things for for melissa um we we we always have our challenges what we do and you know every days can be difficult because what we do matters and we make decisions that affect a lot of people's lives in positive and sometimes in not so positive ways melissa i have to tell you that serving with you the last three years has been a pleasure and um for me personally i now know why you're so good at the job that you have outside of being a board member because what you do requires such an uh a huge heart and and such empathy and you are probably one of the most empathetic people i've i've ever met and and that's that's huge uh because in all honesty we we need more people like that on on this earth and the fact that i've had time to serve with you that has rubbed off on me and i just from the bottom of my heart thank you uh for for everything you've done and for all the people that you have positively impacted i am i am forever grateful to have the ability to serve with you thank you melissa so now we're going to go to public comment um all right so just in case uh you're aware we have two public comments uh the first public comment is for what is on the agenda second public comment which happens later in the evening is for anything that you wish to discuss okay the meeting will not be open to the public referencing agenda items only however your questions or comments pertain to litigation student or personnel items or negotiations we'd ask you to see the super superintendent after the meeting since you do not discuss these matters in public we ask that you limit your comments the three minutes per person it's also crucial please if you give me your give us uh your name and address before you speak up and also it's one per customer all right so when you come up say your piece and then if there's something else in the second agenda that you have to talk about that's perfectly fine but when we're in here it's it's uh one one par so um if there's anybody who wishes to speak please come up for agenda items only okay uh seeing none we're going to close that portion there'll be another one later on all right so at this point we're going to move to approval at this time of year there are often retrospectives looking back at the prior 11 months the top 10 of this the top 20 of that but we've covered in all the other challenges it's hard to escape the pace of each day in order to take a look back at the larger hole but it is important to do that our schools are open our students are in they're excited and they're learning our staff and administrators are working harder than ever and that remains true every time i say it because then ever it ups with each passing week and i thank all of our staff for that effort though we live in the time of shortages one thing in abundance among our families is patience and understanding thank you parents for that patience for that understanding partly for how hard our staff and administrators are all working to try to keep things whole for kids as the signs are there that our children nationwide statewide and locally are hurting my message today about tick tock is just the latest example of that our kids are incredibly resilient they are handling far more than other generations of kids have had to dealing with constant changes masks at times remote learning more rules and more and more they are great kids doing a great job speaking of great kids i'd like to give a shout out to toby mizraki a fifth grader at mes he's battling what's called b-cell non-hodgkin's lymphoma the maltorec wishes to speak up in public comment please come on the microphone is right there just uh please give me your name and address i'm kim galliazzi i live at 115 peabody lane i'm opposed to any mandates on my children including but not limited to masking quarantine and cova 19 vaccination all persons by nature are free and independent we choose what is beneficial for ourselves and our families children are suffering both mentally and physically from these mandates dr smith were the children notified that it was okay to take their mass off in gym classes you agreed with me in an email dated on 11 30 21 i can tell you for a fact they weren't as children are still fighting this battle in gym class they are stressed scared and conflicted with whom to trust all children parents and teachers in esham township need to be informed that mass can come off during physical exertion i am requesting that you add that in your weekly update for east championship school district family's email i'm extremely upset that we as parents take pride in raising our children to respect and abide their authority figures just to have some authority figures take complete advantage of our children in school now i'm forced to teach my children that they no longer have the faith in entrusting these people and they need to say no and defy them i am in utter disgust with the school system and that what it has become over the last two years if this board was truly concerned with the well-being of our children then proper action to resolve these mandates would have happened already we were informed of the new quarantine guidelines by email from dr smith today stating that non-vaccinated children will have to quarantine for 10 days or test out of out at eight days when vaccinated children still do not have to quarantine at all forcing non-vaccinated children to quarantine while vaccinated children who can still catch and transmit covid is not exhibiting equity instead by following these guidelines you are segregating and discriminating against non-vaccinated healthy children we as parents will not allow this discrimination to to continue it is harming the most important people in our lives please educate yourselves on executive order 251 where it recognizes the importance of in-person learning and mental and social well-being being please educate yourselves on the new jersey constitution also please take notice that people created government and that i am the aware of the fact that your purpose as elected officials is to protect protect our liberty and right to happiness i'm here tonight to tell you that we want our normal back get rid of the mass mandates and quarantine guidelines it is our choice most recently we were informed that middleton middletown township school district made quarantine voluntary for close contacts we the citizens of esham township demand that the eastern township school district safe return plan located in the federal american rescue plan act section 2001 be revised immediately to adopt these same guidelines as a middle town and that reflect our constitutional rights for your convenience i'm providing you with copies of the new jersey state constitution the executive order 251 and the safe return plan that middleton township public schools have revised submitted and approved as of 21 12-13-21 you thank you pass it out to the board after the meeting anybody else wish to speak again please state your name and address i'm a little taller my name is natasha malnichuk i'm at 134 windmire road good evening i wanted to take a moment to thank you for giving me this time to exercise my freedom of speech i hope you not only listen to what i have to say but hear what i am conveying to you i stand before all of you as not an anti-vaxxer i'm not a democrat republican i'm a mom i'm a mom that moved from pennsylvania back to new jersey for the public school system and these last couple of years i've made my decision and i certainly regret it i think it is very easy to get carried away with all the social media news and overload about kovid we really don't know what to believe so many act on fear or just making the right decision for their own family we are doing so because we live in the united states we need to continue to make our own decisions based on what is best for the individual situation there should not be reprecautions for those that choose the non-popular choice it is stated that positive cases have been on the rise and just because the cases are rising does not mean that the incubation period changes i completely agree with keeping children home when they are sick i'm a mom of course i do if your rules were the same for all individuals i would still think it is a bit overboard but would be extremely thankful that the children are being treated equally for a district to say that a child that comes in close contact needs to quarantine for 10 days only if that child is not vaccinated it's absurd there are absolutely no studies or scientific data that support that a person who is vaccinated cannot give it or get it this district is choosing to separate those students and punish them for not being vaccinated let me tell you something that is my decision i am their mother i am choosing not to vaccinate them and that is my decision for my family and how dare you feel the need to separate my child because i did not do that i currently have a healthy child in quarantine she supposedly was at a lunch table with another student and apparently unmasked for more than 15 minutes we were told she needed to quarantine for 14 days without the possibility to test out of that if she was vaccinated she would not need to quarantine unless she had symptoms she was told to stay home to reduce the risk of the virus spreading and we were unable even to test her out for an interesting interesting twist her siblings were allowed to attend school because in fact if she got covered that spread would not start at home please tell me again how this rule put into place is stopping the spread how is this not separation of students i understand the mandate changed effective today however vaccinated children still do not need to follow these new restrictions there is absolutely no data that shows that vaccinated children cannot transmit this virus you are rewarding the vaccinated and punishing the unvaccinated this is taking advantage of your position please share with me any data that shows that at minute 16 she has a higher transition rate these rules simply just don't make sense i'm asking you today to hear me to stop for a second and think about the rules you have in place and ask yourself if these rules really make sense i want you to think about the kids think about my children my healthy child has been home for two weeks not getting the proper education i actually pay in my taxes not only that but i pay in a tuition-based kindergarten program she is home all because she supposedly sat at lunch for more than 15 minutes without a mask i would have loved to see that because i've never seen her sit at a table for more than 15 minutes it is difficult to teach my children to stay silent as they are being treated unfairly we are taking a step back in society i ra i was raised by a strong immigrant father that came to this country to live out the american dream and escape separation i will not allow my children to be raised in a world of segregation today in school my oldest daughter had her mask down under her nose and was told to leave the classroom and she had to sit outside in her middle school in this school for five minutes by herself that needs to stop i'm not going to allow my children to be treated this way i need you to consider your mandates and what you're doing to our children to my children thank you thank you anybody else wish to speak a public comment all right seeing none we'll close that portion oh i'm sorry i didn't mean to to cut you off i did not see you just please state your name and address my address is 130 deerfield avenue i was just giving a moment to see if anyone else had something on the same topic so sorry for the delay um this is a reintroduction i spoke at the last meeting and um joined a conversation about full-day kindergarten and half-day kindergarten marlton and i wanted to thank dr smith and miss mgulik for meeting with us privately just to um follow up still here still interested in this conversation and i wanted to um just speak for some public knowledge to share some more information about what i believe are disparities in kindergarten i'll keep it to three minutes um half day kindergartners they receive 40 minutes daily literacy education full day gets 120 every day after gardeners get 20 minutes of math instruction full day gets 35.
uh there's just so many comments that come to mind there's 59 policies that got updated i've never in my this is my 15th year as a superintendent i've never seen this thick of a press policy update um a lot of it has to do with legal changes and whatnot there are some curricular ones in here that we'll be in deeper discussions with um 660 is the curricular content in seven three fifteen are um high school restrictions with publications those are the two that we really need to answer questions for the other ones are just kind of cursory to a certain extent but um please take a look at them if you've got any questions comments or concerns you can notify mr hempkin or mr middle camp because they are the committee members and we will be getting together before the next board meeting to uh review the policies but this is the first reading so with it being with there be so many did barney have any issues with them or did he not review him no i'm sure he's reviewed them but he's not they didn't call anything out right when they when they do these policy reviews they have i mean party might even be on one of the committees that that does that they will typically get school lawyers to uh assist with the writing of the policies through iasb so we just need to approve the first reading so administration recommends the first reading of these policies as presented questions comments i fell asleep reading it three times this one does have money involved indirectly so i think we'll probably do it the first first reading you can just do oh you can't hide anything second bringing you perfect all right all in favor hi perfect pay extensions all right awesome scott appreciate it let's all right items uh four is our discussion items i've really had no updates for the facility study um we are going to be having the architects work one programmatic surveys working with mrs smith this culture as we as we look as to what our facilities need i'm still engaging in conversations with the city that's pretty much all you got there's been no change since last month now all right item b is our individual member comments for the board members do they have anything they want to say it's a lively bunch tonight i was going to ask um have you gotten any phone calls or anything from parents since they announced the schools across the river that are going to optional mask starting in january i'm not um no i've got no no phone calls about that but yeah i guess in january the missouri is going to go with some mask optionals yeah they just listed i think four on the news last night but there's a couple school boards meeting tonight to vote on it okay we are still in that predicament where if we went masked optional we would end up with a um we'd have to change our minds before there was no accreditation it would just be a due process dragging of the feed so any other comments all right for president's prerogative um i would like to acknowledge kelly landgraf she uh um her sixth grade class raised over two thousand dollars on behalf of the school and uh so i think they donated to the columbia caring for community organizations so and they did it through caroling which means a bunch of families got to hear the kids singing which is always good very cool i love the community involvement so it's nice they can get back out again it is it really is starting to feel more normal perfect all right and that's all i have um a squirty alluded to we do have an executive session there's no action plan for executive session so we just need a motion to enter injected session i'll make that motion thank you scott enjoy your second one we want an executive session there for me thank you tyson all in favor aye opposed i think so all right perfect all right we're going to go into executive session i appreciate your involvement participating all right welcome back we just concluded our executive session there's no action to be taken as a result of our session and that concludes our meeting this evening and we would like to make a motion turn i'll make the motion tammy thank you second second at least a second it's all in favor all right any opposed perfect all right thank you for attending have a great night [Music] you
there's two 20s on the roster but i'm going to say 20 that is maggie russell for the bulldogs be her first they get it in the shot is off the mark and we're possibly going to have a jump ball called possession air will be to the bulldogs that was a strong hard offensive rebound by the olympians but good job by the bulldogs get their hands on it as well to cause the jump ball and looks like east is going to pick up a zone press there and the bulldogs break with no problem east has done a good job all night long defensively and we're going to have our foul and the bulldogs will be at the line shooting two katherine wilson will be at the line shooting two and the first one hit the back of the rim and no good 6 34 remaining here in the second see if she can go one for two here and she does mixable dogs score at five olympians turn the ball over a good steal by the bulldogs greta brown got the steal there gets it down low inside kicks out had the three but good job by the olympians to close out on the shooter and a good strong take is up and no good but greta brown will be at the line shooting two and we are all evened up at three team fouls here kimberly cruthers picked up the foul will be her second brown out the line her first one is up and no good and the second one rolls in [Applause] 10 to six is our score north back in their press looks like it was just a little man-to-man press there both teams do a great job getting the ball down inside and cutting and they do a great job at trying to find the right people to give it to as they attack inside hits off of her foot and will be north oh excuse me it will be east basketball it looked like it maybe hit off the north's foot at the last second east gets it on the baseline good job by north's defense there and they commit the turnover and we we're going to have a jump ball possession of error will be east 5 35 remaining here in the second [Music] let's see if east can get something going they've been on a drive spell here offensively a strong take is up and good for the olympians number five kimberly carruthers with the strong hard take floater and got it and a good pass inside just to lay up off the mark and tipped out of bounds by the o's we'll say on this end for the bulldogs and they get it in looks like to russell at the top three ball is up and on its way in a little long but offense of rebound by the bulldogs keeps the possession alive good pass shot is up and no good and another great hustle play by the bulldogs to keep the possession alive and through the hands it will be east basketball and they get it across the timeline crosses over in the corners thought about it didn't shoot it looks like north fell back into a zone and switched it to man and a strong take by the o's in and out gots her own rebound and forces up the shots and off the mark and it will be north basketball 4-10 remaining here in the second quarter just a reminder we will be streaming both games here tonight this is the jv game and varsity will follow right after so make sure you stick around and support your respective school here tonight north basketball here four minutes remaining here in the second 12 to six is our score great pass baseline jump shot is up and good and looks like north has a little bit momentum going there as the olympians throw it out of bounds bloody o's have only scored two points here in the second quarter i'm sure they're looking to change that around on the offensive end a great pass inside and off the mark a great play call there by the bulldogs just couldn't convert they got the look they wanted just a little long on the layup see if the yo's can get something going on their end of the court this shim is picking up with fans getting ready for their action here tonight and we're gonna have a foul coming to buy the bulldogs will be their 14th foul and we will have a 30-second timeout taken by the o's with 320 remaining here in the second once again we want to thank our sponsor forced construction for sponsoring this live stream here tonight [Music] once again this is crosstalk rivalry week excuse me and congratulations to the east girls swimming team and the boys swimming team from columbus north and congratulations to the east wrestling team as they picked up wins earlier this week the east basketball after the timeout here 320 remaining here in the second and they get it in see if the o's can finally score they've scored only two points this quarter they look to attack kick out for the three north's done a good job this quarter they really picked up their defensive pressure here and it's shown here in the second quarter good job by the bulldogs defensively they are all over the place sliding their feet and meeting the o's right where they're looking to go as it shones right there and north fans are cheering them on and we're going to have a five second call good job by the bulldogs defensively [Applause] the os had nowhere to go on that possession see if the bulldogs can capitalize off of the turnover and get this back to a two-point ball game the three-point shot it's on its way and good [Applause] make that a one-point ball game and tips out of bounds and the bulldogs are going crazy with this energy they have i think the three-point shot was by number five elise preston that was a big time shot good job by her teammate to see her and she caught that and stepped right into a big time of three making it a one-point ballgame 12-11 as our score and we have another turnover by the bulldogs the layup is up and good and they will have the lead here tonight here in the second defense is turning into points for the bulldogs and we have a foul committed by the bulldogs here will be their fifth team foul they all say basketball is a game of runs and it's showing here early in this game picks up her dribble finds her teammate gets it down low into low block and it will be a turnover once again by the o's [Applause] [Music] early on east had the good defense pressure now it's switched and a good steal there by the o's three-point shot is up and short don't know if that was the shot you wanted to take she felt confident in her shot can keep the hot streak going jump shot is up and good and put her to the line for a possible and one and a three-point play that is a maggie russell a big time shot there with the contact nothing but nets and see if she can convert this and one and that is through 16 to 12 120 remaining here a close call there by the o's wondering if the olympians will call time out here if they don't get something to fall they attack inside the bulldogs closed really good they had four defenders right over top of her had nowhere else to go and she forces the shot up and the bulldogs rebounded here under a minute to go here in the second quarter the attack inside gets it down low a good pass and the shot is up and good [Applause] wilson with the basket that was a great job offensively for the bulldogs got the look they were looking for almost a possible steal good hustle play by the bulldogs and we're gonna have a jump ball possession arrow to the columbus north great hustle play there by elise preston poked it loose and doe for the ball that's exactly what as a coach you're looking for in your players those hustle plays and she did just that coming up on 20 seconds here in the second quarter 18-12 our score bulldogs have went on a big old run here in the second quarter looks like north's gonna hold it for maybe one last shot in the corner big time three on its way no good had the good look and stole it right out of her hands the shot is no good and that will do it here for the first half at columbus north high school your home team your columbus north bulldogs lead your visitors columbus east olympians 18 to 12.
we want to redo the cafeteria and highland and also we need some refrigeration equipment at the high school then after that is hvac improvements 645 and then we need to make some exterior uh building improvements which is about so i'm just going to go through one more question do you have do you not [ __ ] your head how much of this in the five year total middle school uh i could break it out by school but when we go to the next sheet you can actually see it and we could kind of work through the total together before you go yeah just i'm just noticing the percent so next to the 20 20 22 23 caliber yeah is it just a typo no you know what it is i didn't it's okay i didn't have a plus stuff for these two no 650 of the 300.
we as as teachers and classify everyone we should not be begging for a race or begging for smaller class sizes we should not be begging for our blacktop to be fixed when we have teachers falling and getting hurt um I have fallen and gotten hurt a couple years ago uh because our blacktops are not being fixed safety conditions are important teachers are important all employees classified but what I literally was asked to move and he like she had said it's not okay I was raised and born and raised in this area I grew up in Camion Park I am Mexican-American and proud of it I am bilingual and we all and it doesn't matter who we are where we're from but the teachers they are awesome at Round Rock they give all of their best it doesn't matter um that um I'm sorry I'm losing my losing track as I haven't talked in a long time but um please don't make us beg for for respect um I had to move and my rent went from 1800 to 3 100 and it's not okay and I wish you would just and when I was so happy to see a new board come on board and you guys were doing the same old same old um it's just a result it's like why aren't you changing your tactics why aren't you showing respect they beg us to come back parents want us all to come back there's a global pandemic and yet we are still being so disrespected and it's not okay please please help us all thank you Mr Brooker our next speaker is Nathan lefkowitz Nathan you have two minutes please submit yourself when you begin speaking the timer will begin hi so I just want to say thank you to the board for giving me this opportunity to speak um the reason I'm here tonight I'm a new teacher here um and I just really want to say that teaching has been one of the most rewarding experiences of all the different jobs I've done however right now I just want to emphasize that right I am incredibly anxious and I'm also incredibly heartbroken and the reason I use those two words is because I am feeling right now hearing all these Educators speak who have been here for 20 plus years say that the same thing is happening over and over again that makes me feel like a I'm nervous for my own position and B I'm heartbroken for the students it doesn't make sense for somebody like me to stay in the district where teachers are saying that they are being treated the same way over the course of 20 years you are not going to keep new members here the problem is with employer retention you are going to have to continuously retrain and re-educate the same types of people every single year that means you're going to see the same exact problems and you're going to the same exact issues until you change your tactics if you don't change and you don't adapt to what people are saying people like me who are new are not going to be motivated to stay if you continuously lose those people you are not going to be able to make effective changes having and hiring new employees every year is not an intelligent smart or reasonable business idea no matter what you are doing if you're a forming company or if you are doing sorry or if you were doing uh School management so the fact is if you want me or anyone new to stay you're going to have to change your tactics and respect Educators and make the changes that they are demanding the fact that I see 20-year veteran teachers say that they're begging over and over again lets me know everything I need to so I just want you to take this a note and say that this is somebody new who enjoys teaching who would like to stay but can't because it doesn't make sense thank you for your comments our next speaker is Karen McDonald Miss McDonald you have two minutes please submit yourself when you begin speaking the timer will begin thank you superintendent Bauer and Alum Rock board members for allowing us to share our comments first let me say that I am a woman of faith I believe in one God and I follow Jesus I lead with this because this impasse has created a conflict in future actions and created one more area of discernment for me I mean the teachers already have about decisions to make every day and this is an ongoing problem for me when we taught from home there was no question that teachers would teach past the allotted Zoom time that we would buy the tools necessary to do a good job to upgrade our home Wi-Fi so that there won't be so much dropped calls to post letters to our students and come back in April at the request of the school and its community we didn't wait for administrators to reimburse us or give their approval we did it for the best interest of our students we did these things because it was the right thing to do not because it was safe or even convenient but but because we cared and we cared about our districts back working this long without a reasonable cost of living increase is disappointing when I met with you Dr Bauer in June you may or may not remember that I did not come to you with a list of complaints I simply told you the list or the status of how the year went you probably don't even remember me but now as you and the board make decisions about having our backs I have to be candid and say it does not feel like We Are Family but as a God-fearing woman I will just say this I will forgive you for the bad decisions and the wrong treatment that the employees are getting right now and I will pray that your hearts may be softened to do come to a quick and reasonable resolution thank you thank you Miss McDonald our next speaker is Nicole Versace you have two minutes please submit yourself when you begin speaking the timer will begin hello uh hopefully you can hear me my name is Nicole bisatcha I'm a one of five art teachers in the school district and I'm very proudly at Joseph George Middle School um I love my students I love my colleagues I love my community but unfortunately I will not be able to return to the district next year and it is entirely because of the way the district management is treating me as well as all of my incredibly hard-working colleagues I could go to another District I could take my over 10 years of teaching and my master's degree in specialized education and I can go to another district and earn 25 000 more per year and be treated at least like a human and I've been thinking about this for a few years I've had many many many other people in the district tell me to get out while I can and this year I'm afraid I'm going to have to follow that advice because I have no other choice I love my job I love my students I love everyone I talk to on a daily basis and is absolutely breaking my heart that I can no longer afford to work here both in terms of my fiscal health and my emotional health so please consider what it takes to keep dedicated teachers around and actually be able to afford to keep this job thank you Miss Versace our next speaker is Stephen Lynch Mr Lynch you have two minutes please submit yourself when you begin speaking the timer will begin um okay I've unmuted myself the Alum Rock School District is failing at students and has been for many years every year we have a significant number of students who are extremely below grade level expectations in their reading ability this year due to last year's covid remote learning and even larger number of students than usual is way below grade level we need to address the ongoing ongoing lack of support for students who are needing extra help and especially those who need extra help this year what have they done to remediate the problems caused by last year's challenges how are they spending the millions of dollars of the coveted money to help our students I have seen no impact from the millions of dollars of covid money in my classroom the district office is now telling the special education teachers to tell the general education teachers to adapt and adjust their classes due to a majority of students now being below below their two great levels below grade level this is just normal I deal with this every year two grade levels below normal it's not okay the Alum Rock School District does not support its students nor its teachers sufficiently throughout my 20 years teaching in the Alum Rock School District I have witnessed incredible waste of the money that should be spent on students it is inconsible that the student that the school district does not support their students and teachers by not coming to a reasonable contract with the teachers union foreign we are here for the students I expect the school district to be here for the students too thank you Mr Lynch our next speaker is Veronica Helton miss telton you have two minutes please submit yourself when you begin speaking the timer will begin good evening I'm a proud vappa instructor at George middle and Lindell Elementary and my very first time speaking at a board meeting was in November 2019 shortly after I was hired I shared how proud I was to be in Alum Rock and thank the board for their service though I've been deeply bothered with actions in our district as of late I still have hope that the district's mission statement will be upheld morale is low employee energy is depleted and the cost of living continues to rise while our salaries remain stagnant as we approach winter break in the season of giving and celebration I implore the district's bargaining team to consider students and employees the district has the power to settle the contract with area and to reduce class sizes maintain safe School environments and provide a raise for certificated staff please settle the teachers contracts for my students whom I love and show up for daily to retain colleagues who aren't fed up with working conditions but who will choose to stay to attract new and highly qualified qualified Educators to our school sites and for the principles of justice and fairness in closing I'll leave you with a quote from orator Frederick Douglass which reads if there is no struggle there is no progress those who profess to favor freedom and yet depreciate agitation are men who want crops without plowing up the ground they want rain without thunder and lightning they want the ocean without the awful Roar of its many Waters this struggle may be a moral one a physical one or it may be both moral and physical but it must be a struggle power concedes nothing without a demand it never did and it never will please settle the contract for area thank you very kindly for listening and I'm still thankful to be a member a teacher in Alum Rock thank you Miss Hudson our next speaker is Amy Rodriguez Ms Rodriguez you have two minutes please submit yourself when you begin speaking the timer will begin hi my name is Amy Rodriguez and I am one of the two District nurses at Alum Rock and I am very proud to be a member of the Alum Rock Community and to be taking care of the students and the community where I live and work however I implore you to please settle the contract I am proud to be a member of Aria as a nurse the ratio is incredible it's one nurse for every over 4 000 students we have more students with medical needs than we ever have before on top of everything else we do covid contact tracing we make sure the kids get health screenings we do all of the health care plans for all of the students with any kind of medical need from asthma to more severe needs such as diabetes and seizures I implore you please settle this contract and show the nurses and the teachers that we are worth it that we are valued that we are worth your time thank you very much thank you Ms Rodriguez our next speaker is Caitlyn sarmiento Mr miento you have two minutes please send me yourself when you begin speaking the timer will begin foreign sarmiento I'm a second year teacher at Renaissance Academy at Fisher and a former student of Leicester Shields Elementary and Pella Middle School both in the Alamo School District having grown up in the east side of San Jose I've seen how hard Alum Rock student hard Alum Rock teachers work and strive to give students everything and more that they need to succeed but now being on the other side as a teacher I'm seeing how little these amazing educators are being valued by the district and I have to say as someone who really admired all of my teachers as a student before it's truly disappointing and heartbreaking to see this and to feel this how does the district expect to attract new energetic teachers under these circumstances let alone retain amazing teachers with 10 20 30 plus years of teaching experience teachers teach plan assess grade communicate Bond and care because that's what our students deserve that's what our community deserves and yet on the other side of it teachers are not getting good respect and the pay that we deserve so please I ask you to settle our contract and to think of us as humans and to think of us as people who deserve a living wage to get through these tough times especially this year thank you Miss heniento for president at this time we have no more public comments uh it seems like a couple of people raise your hand and yes please call me yes we have Miss Sandra Rivera Miss Rivera you have two minutes please submit yourself you begin speaking the timer will begin good evening board superintendent my name is Sandra Rivera I'm a TK teacher at Cesar Chavez 10 areas vice president I come before you tonight with a word tired now many teachers know there is no kind of tired like two days before Christmas break tired in any classroom but two days before Christmas break on a year coming back after a pandemic tired has a different meaning this year tea for me is trust right now it's trust that I'm lacking trust that my employer in my district is going to help take care of me and my family for all the work dedication and time that I spend with my students the eye is irritated that we're here yet again as my 16th year in the district I have signs with my children picketing almost every two years I can do a time lapse watching my children grow up on the picket lines in Alum Rock are run down not only our classrooms and Facilities run down but your teachers are run down and tired he embarrassed I'm embarrassed that every year I'm being forced to hand out pamphlets and papers and talk to my parents about the poor working conditions that we have here in Alum Rock but D has me a little bit hopeful and that's determined I'm determined to make a difference in this district and I'm hoping that this board is determined as we are please take this time and consider what kind of tired you want your teachers to be is it going to be trust irritated run down embarrassed or are we going to turn that tired into something triumphant thank you thank you Miss Rivera our next speaker is rander Randall barber Mr Barber you have two minutes please submit yourself when you begin speaking the timer will begin thank you board my name is Randy Barber I'm 19-year veteran in Alum Rock and uh the speakers who spoke well uh I don't have a lot to add to that other than we need you to make the commitment to us as teachers the same way you make the commitment to extending superintendent contracts over multiple years worth millions of dollars or getting automatic raises to YMCA or city year because quote unquote the rates are going up yes that's true costs are going up we all know it we need you to seriously seriously fairly settle this contract because you can hear the the you can hear the anger building and the exhaustion building and I hope you're hearing that we are willing to fight for our students so please settle our contract thank you I want to remind everyone that if you've already spoken public comments once uh at one point in time so if you've already spoken um you've already been recognized we're going to go ahead and move on thank you Mr Barber uh we're president and our next speaker is Elena Barron you have two minutes please commute yourself when you begin speaking the timer will begin hello I have been teaching at Lindale uh for a few years now I've been with the district for close to 25 years and I just want to piggyback on what everybody else has been saying um I just want to say that the stalling of a much needed raise for teachers or raise the district can in fact afford is puzzling and it's almost as if a majority of you board members would like to support us but are somehow holding back now board members remember that you have been elected to serve the interest of students and a fair raise for teachers is intrinsically tied to the progress of students uh When We Begin work to rule the educated education of our students will suffer um maybe some board members don't want to go against a powerful person or people in Alum Rock by voting for a raise maybe board members feel uh that you will need the endorsement of said people in the future for political office or for some other reason maybe you want to secure future letters of recommendation it's puzzling to me I'm trying to figure it out that's why I'm asking these questions um but I will remind you you have been elected to Endeavor in the interests of Alum Rock students you have not been elected to secure your own business political or otherwise future please stay with the focus the students when work to rule comes out it's going to be pretty devastating we have you know different interventions we have different things that are are already stopping it's very serious I want to say thank you for how you brought up the beginning of your meeting by acknowledging so easily the muakma alone and yes they do indeed deserve to be acknowledged please see us in that same light as people who are working for the community thank you thank you Miss baroon at this time we have no more public comment um moving on to item 3.01 uh Alum Rock administrators Association we're here in uh Commons and Communications we have somebody from AR AAA yes we uh we have Miss Martinez hello good evening School Board trustees and superintendent Bauer I am Maria Martinez and I'm the past president of araa and the principal at Adelante dual Language Academy this evening I am happy to share information about what is going on at our Alum Rock schools this past month more of our schools held vaccination clinics most recently endorse that held their first clinic and as we speak right now uh Russo mcentee is wrapping up their Clinic as well this evening and when we return from winter break dorsa will launch their partnership with the get down through which will be able to provide hip-hop classes to students and dorsa along with many other sites have also just wrapped up fall intervention Cycles recently the we're ready to play and they didn't want to finish they just didn't have enough okay but uh i'm super proud of them hopefully we can grab a few more seventh graders next year um so when i call your name and come down miller apple lars he's gone large manhattan dylan skillman grant gupta hunter bomb garner connor west coulter lee logan turner landon boaver beau hall joy over a round of applause [Applause] again these guys are here you know just like volleyball people across the country they're here early before school started this year practicing in the heat we didn't have too much one week of really warm weather but it wasn't awful this year but um they topped it out with just very few players and that's that says a lot about their character and their integrity and i appreciate this group and i just look for good things next year and hopefully we can grab a few more players let's give them one more round of applause [Applause] after my eighth grade they were also three and four um again battled through some tough stuff didn't have a ton of players but a few more than the uh the seventh grade um battled through some injuries and again some soreness and some covet um that still is kind of hanging around unfortunately um but they all stepped up and did a wonderful job i'm excited to see what they do in high school with coach petry it's the same offense so they should be ready to go i might switch up the defense a little bit but uh they're ready this group i think is going to make a great transition to the high school level it's always a change it's always a big change when you jump from middle school to high school speed strength agility power just the plays the number of plays they have compared to ours but i think they're ready for that challenge and i can't wait to watch it so if they've come forward bowen mcintosh owen mccartney and you guys can line up right cohen hazen jake lyson brody kidd drayton pfeiffer odin manhattan kaiser layman hunter gold max cheever toby berg alex motts lincoln wright ryan hoyt luke griffin eli grove brody garland give him a round of applause [Applause] so let me give these guys i'm excited to see what they do next year in high school um see live and moving up pretty quick and they were just a fun group to coach and i appreciate all their time and their effort and i look forward to the seventh graders again we can round up a few more guys or gals i'm working on a couple sixth grade girls right now so i see him sitting over there so let's give them one more round and uh we have volleyball you guys have a merry christmas and coach augustine no gina she's in italy and coach mike [Music] hello and welcome to the awards this is always a fun day to recognize our athletes who come and spend their time before and after school we did a lot of morning practices and they loved it right yeah so anyway what i'd like to do is i'd like to announce both the seventh and eighth grade girls and as i announce you if you would come down and let's do seventh graders on my right eighth graders on my left and before i do that i have two managers that are going to help pass out awards um mrs ingles not with us today she is out of the country in italy and having a wonderful time so it's just uh just us just coach lyker and myself and our two managers the three of us have talked several times over the season uh especially coaching online because we've been doing this a while that these two managers were by far probably some of our best managers we've ever had and we say that from the heart these girls stepped in when they saw something needed to be done they did it and they helped us out a great deal i really really appreciate their help so with katie briggs and emma bohannon please come down [Applause] okay as these girls come down these managers and coach liker will hand out your certificates and then we'll talk about the teams 7th grade ella irvin carly dochman megan dunaway jewell roth raylan majors alexa lecter isabella mcmanus libby zigler mckenzie bedford brianna player alana rogers kinsley noonan matt medlock addison fisher paige ferrara eden coffee allison shin patricia slavavac sage bell elizabeth miller bailey hayes riley duckman nevaeh myers ava fisher ali depalio i love all right eighth graders if you come right over here for me please jc belcher emma thompson addison sleazer katherine hale kindly hope corinne mullin hattie bergio audrey daley mackenzie krueger camden swank natalie strauder hayley hahn macy carlson cameron davis ziri dewitt grayson clown [Music] let's go ahead and get a little bit of a hand here we'll talk about here uh before i forget before i forget eighth graders i'd like a picture of with you guys over here in this corner when we get all done please like one big group picture okay so let me talk a little bit about our seventh graders we had a lot of girls out and this is awesome i hope to see a lot of you going out next year as well they were fourth in the bms tournament fourth in the pioneer league tournament which was a tough tournament seventh grade the league tournament is a tough is a tough group this year um overall we were uh in league we were four and two in league which could have easily been to uh excuse me two and four which could have easily been four and two i mean these kids they had two or three matches that were extremely close went to five sets lost by two points so we were just right on the edge there so i see those becoming wins next year we went to a silver lake tournament this year with our 7th and 8th graders and it's a tough tournament and our girls got fifth out of that tournament which is really good considering the teams that were there and that was some of their best ball they played that day according to mrs eagle you girls played as a team and she said she really enjoyed watching you play and to come away from that tournament with a victory at the end is really a good deal and they did that so all in all it's been a very very good season for these girls i really enjoyed having every single one of you and let's look to it next year and have a good successful season next year okay eighth graders um this is always so cool because um you have them for two years and you know i do this every year but they're just they're just special they come in they're excited they work hard and they're just a great group of kids um these eighth graders went 11-3 overall third in the bms tournament third in silverlake tournament behind attempt washburn rural and silver lake teams um the biggest thing these eighth graders did this year every single one of them they went undefeated in league play both seventh and eighth or excuse me both jv and varsity we're undefeated in league play which is awesome please give them a hand for that one [Music] and along with that along with that our 8th grade varsity squad they were back-to-back league champions at the tournament and also back-to-back league regular season champions so they did this in 7th grade and then they did this again in eighth grade so congratulations to those ladies let's give them a hand [Applause] okay i have one special award that i like to give out every year it is my most improved player award and that award goes to an individual who was out both 7th and 8th grade years and watched their improvement through both seasons it was hands down that this young lady saw great improvement with her i really enjoyed watching her improve and i hope along with all these other eighth grade girls that she continues to go out for volleyball because these eighth grade girls here are going to make a statement in high school and i'm excited to see that happen so my most improved player goes to hey girls let's do it goes to two claps macy carlson okay one last thing i'd like to do recognize all these young ladies up here is have the student body recognize them uh tradition has it that we like to do two claps after good things in practice and these girls all did two claps or two claps effort all through the season so i'd like the student body to give them two claps on three so can we hear you you all ready to go sixth graders are ready to go i want to hear it loud you'll be up here next year okay on three one two three all right thank you ladies very much [Music] all right [Music] all right so for girls basketball we started our season in october and ended at um about mid-december so it's not been very long since we finished up it's been an interesting season with illness and changes and all of that but these girls um just kept working each and every day we had some injuries that they worked through that and um ended up with a really great season so first i would like to bring down my poor [Applause] so managers four put in all the hard work especially in game days they get to carry the uniforms make sure they're all there make sure they get returned pull them after they've been washed uh videotape all the gains keep the staff in the gym so they worked super hard both haley pond and mackenzie hughwall were our managers for two years straight and did a fantastic job kara martin joined them this year um and did a fantastic job for us also poor kinley really wanted to play and we would have loved to have her but unfortunately she wasn't jerk so instead she shifted over to manager so she still got to spend the season with us and did a great job for us too all right and now if i could bring my seventh graders down and line up over here to the right if you played seventh grade all right these girls were made up of alexis lecter carly dochman mackenzie medlock paige ferrara ella irvin addison fisher bailey hayes mackenzie beckford alana rogers eden codding jewel raw ava fisher caitlin charlton allison shin ali diablo elizabeth miller patricia schlatterbeck from braylon majors so these girls all came out some of them did dual sports they did both wrestling and basketball but they were there each day and working so our varsity team well let me start with the jvt the jv team unfortunately many of the other teams in our league this year did not have very many players so they didn't get a lot of time against other seventh-grade teams instead they had to play a lot of games against eighth grade teams and had a combined jv um they fought hard they improved but unfortunately they didn't win a whole bunch of games but they got better each and every game and did a fantastic job so we really hope to see all of them out again next year our varsity team um went 11-2 they won our league tournament and tied for first place in league or no they took it second place ended up with second place in league so they were very successful and did fantastic they can't wait to see what they do again next year give them a big now if my eighth grade girl would come down and line up over here all right not as many 8th graders out this year so we kind of had to work hard when the teams did have enough to play four games to get it in and get them more playing time but uh overall these girls did fantastic they included grayson power patty burchio addison squeezer camden swain jc belcher emma thompson audrey daly braley barton kaylee briggs and jackie smith and olivia lane our jb we just had a couple of players playing on jv due to the lower numbers but they did a fantastic job who were great role models for the seventh graders when we combined jb um the other girls played on varsity this year they went 11-2 also they placed third in our home tournament and i think you girls were tied for first the only loss we had in our regular league season was santa fe trail which we beat someone so they beat us once so it's kind of a back and forth and they're kind of our biggest rival for this group of girls always a lot of fun to watch those two teams play i really hope you girls consider going out from high school because i think you will make a fantastic addition to the high school team and i will truly miss getting to see you each and every day please give them a big [Applause] you know and i'm going to turn this back over foreign [Music] that concludes our awards before we move into [Music] our second act we're gonna do some skits but i'm gonna let eighth graders we're gonna do the skits first and then the band um and then we can just turn that around can't wait to do so they can come in that door with equipment okay and we'll put the chairs down here in the city okay but if the 8th graders have who else is in band 8th grade band you might go c quickly if he needs more help moving some equipment please take your rewards with you all right so we're going to move this stuff and we will start our skits i'm not sure who is going first but we will figure that out when we move some of the stuff you guys stay put we will be doing a separate um link for the skits so we'll start another broadcast here in a few
add that up over the course of a week that's 400 more minutes for full day kindergarteners compared to half-day kindergartners you may check the boxes of the curriculum and consider it the same the extended time says it isn't so how many full-day kindergarten students exit kindergarten at a higher reading level than half-day kindergartners because they're afforded the opportunity to have more time are we providing our half-day kindergartens with the maximum potential opportunity or are we limiting them this boils down to two basic factors education and finances i've touched a bit on education um finances i know that it can be um seem like there's some hurdles here but i want to point out that i counted um i might be wrong 34 districts in the county offer tuition-free full-day kindergarten we are one of two that charges for public full-day kindergarten the only other one we can compare to is morristown they charge a fraction of what we charge we charge fifty five hundred dollars they recently reduced their rate to thirty seven hundred i think that the perception is that we're offering families the option how nice of us when really this it's the exact opposite we're not giving families an option we're limiting families but we're either saying either you can afford it or if you can't your child will get a fraction of the benefit of this education we are now the anomaly the standards have changed everyone else has figured it out i'm happy to meet with all of you and try to work through this i don't have um so many ideas you're a bright bunch of people i'm sure that we can figure it out if we all work together thank you thank you please state your name and address uh kristen nardello i'm at 94 kent ave along with the tuition-based kindergarten i have a preschooler right now i'm going to have a full-time kindergartner come august first i need to write a check for 3 500 in three installments something i don't understand to morristown being the comparable district that has tuition kindergarten offers it over a 10-month payment there are so many parents that we've talked to in the last month that we've been you know talking about tuition-based kindergarten and so many people don't understand or can't afford to do the three payments you know we at one point would have been that family luckily we're able to do that but it's it's such a burden and i don't understand why we can't spread that out over 10 months and obviously the goal would be to have free kindergarten but in the meantime if that's not something that we can do can we make it easier on families and do it over a 10-month payment plan i think it seems like an obvious choice it seems discriminatory to me that come august 1st if you don't have a thousand dollars for preschool or 2500 for full day kindergarten that you can't send your kid to the district kindergarten so thank you thank you please state your name and address hi can you hear me okay my name is rebecca de persia i'm at seven sandwood um i came today on a whim because i wanted to um to be a part of my children's lives i didn't prepare anything but i did want to just commend the two women that spoke earlier about the vaccine mandate the mass mandates all the mandates and i 110 agree with every single thing that they said um as a parent as a mother i make my children's decisions for them uh that's my job that was kind of the deal when i got pregnant so um i'm just gonna tell a little personal story that um my daughter goes to mes and she came home from school the other day and told me that the nurse came in the office and uh she was terrified she was terrified that the nurse was going to bring her into the office and give her a shot equally as terrifying is the principal um asked them one day hey show of hands who here has been vaccinated um none of his business it's no one's business who's been vaccinated and who has not um my son comes home from school and it's a daily conversation in his classroom who's got the shot who's been vaccinated how many times have you gotten it oh my arm hurts because i got the vaccine it's no one's business who gets this vaccine and if they do or do not and it's our personal choice it's our freedom as parents as americans that's why we live in this country is that we have freedoms and i just wanted to voice my opinion as a parent as an american that this is unconstitutional and this is discrimination when teachers start to segregate kids that are vast and unboxed and i just wanted to say my peace thank you thank you anyone else wish to speak please state your name and address hi i'm melissa lampman i'm 13 old republican my child is currently first year in eve sham we've been attending marlton christian academy and we had great experience there my daughter has been at marlton christian academy since she was two my son is currently a second grade at marlton elementary and it was a hard decision for us to transfer him to the eve shame township school district but we did hear such great things about it and i grew up here so i decided to change him to this school district all last year when he was at marlton christian academy he did not have to quarantine at all now these rules are ridiculous i'm about to take him out of the school to send him back to marlton christian academy where they actually value their education and they value what the parents choices are as a teacher in another district i think it's outrageous these quarantine rules i teach at a high school our kids are in close contact with each other for an hour during lunch time without their masks there are no quarantining with them if regardless of their vaccination status they don't contact trace during that lunchtime hour so this is your school doing this this is eve sham doing this not all schools in new jersey are following these same guidelines and at this point it is unfair and i choose not to vaccinate my child and i think that it would be totally unconstitutional to separate them because if he has to quarantine now the whole school knows that he is not vaccinated that is a hipaa violation as well i'm pretty much disgusted in eve sham township at this point and i don't know what i'm going to do with my child next year my daughter who's currently in kindergarten because she hasn't had a quarantine she gets to sit down once she's in her desk she puts her mask down and guess what there hasn't been any outbreaks so this here is something that you as our board we elected you to speak up for us as parents you're our voice you're elected so you need to hear us hear what we're saying and as parents we know what's best for our children if a child wants to stay home if the child has a fever they can stay home the flu shot is not mandated and kids don't have to quarantine after they have the flu and that affects kids more than covid affects kids then that needs to be considered as well thank you thank you anyone else wish to speak nicole thomas to surrey court marlton i'd like to share a letter that my son who is in fourth grade wrote to the governor murphy during free time i don't want any more masks please can you take all the mask rules away so we can regain our freedom and so we can all breathe make it a choice to wear a mask or not so we don't smell our own breath so people can stop freaking out because someone is not wearing a mask thank you anybody else wish to speak all right seeing none we're going to close that portion of the board i can just that's why i feel i want to just say a few words in response to the comments we appreciate everyone who comes to our board meetings and the perspectives this uh this tunnel that we've been in since march 2020 has been longer than anyone imagined and tougher as well and we we hear that in the voices of the people who spoke tonight um i i do want to point out and there's so much information to share right so that's that's one of the sort of hallmarks of the time we live in is not only is there so much info but it's also always changing right so like today the uh the update to the quarantine guidance where it was 14 days mandatory no ability to test and return early this afternoon that changed i sent that out right away because that's a wonderful thing we're glad to have that back because i know when parents lost the ability to test and have their kids return earlier with a negative test that was a big blow so that was you know that was a welcome change um in all those instances we're just following the guidance that we've been required to follow through the safe return plan that every district had to develop and through the department of health guidance that comes out so you know when it comes to something like vaccination um that that that piece about people who are fully vaccinated being able to um continue to come in they'll have to quarantine that's if you go to the the you know the information i've shared out through the various updates it's right there at the bottom of the chart and the even the quote that i use today is is right out of the guidance so um you know what so we understand there's a lot of um you know a lot of uh strong feelings about all this um and i think the most important thing is just to respect that everybody has their own perspectives right and that's important and if we're all sitting around the kitchen table we want to be able to hear those perspectives together and try to find the best path forward together so that's what we're always trying to do and we'll continue to do and i appreciate everyone who came out tonight thank you dr smith all right at this point in time we are going to go to board member announcements are there any announcements by board members listen i don't want to make it i mean like i just want to say that my children have not come home and said that there's any kind of asking in the classroom who's vaccinated who's not that doesn't mean that it hasn't happened i just hope it's not happening in our classrooms and there's no mention of vaccination for children again my my children have not reported show of hands and i would hope that our teachers and administrators would never ask that question and listen to your question there's your comments so our nurses have have sent out communication to parents if they voluntarily want to tell us their their child's vaccination status we can use that to help their child stay in school for the guidance so that's that's what we've asked for i understand um the you know but if you look at a classroom full of kids and you watch kids in the hallway and throughout our school day um there's there's no there's no uh differentiation by by vaccination status and and no questioning of show of hands i would hope i i trust well of course i'll follow up on the example shared earlier today you know in the meeting so but um but we are not um [Music] you know if kids are talking about among themselves but we're not we're not asking although we'll be following up in that instance yeah that's that's that's a that's a serious allegation we can't have anybody asking anybody or showing raise their hands especially for little kids we can't we can't do it for anybody but they're an extraordinarily vulnerable group to that i would i would be very unhappy if that were for the case mm-hmm um so i appreciate you following up on that um in terms of thank you i apologize and i just wanted to just say merry christmas to everyone happy new year and i hope everyone has a very relaxing and restful winter break we all deserve it um also i'll get miss filming of you or mr lancelata i'll be right with you in one second i apologize mr lanez um also just a couple of notes this board has on a few occasions has written to or have approved letters to the governor in terms of mass mandates uh this this board has done that and it's done it's its diligence when it has to do it all right so it has it has been sympathetic to that i do want that to be relayed right that we have done that yeah i could name so three examples would be uh so last may um as a group of lenape region district so that's nine districts are eight k to eights plus the high school district we sent a letter to the governor asking for um some wiggle some exceptions if possible on the masked mandate that's what led to in part in part because there were many districts that were doing that as well the extreme heat exception that enabled which was very advantageous for things like our school buses all our buildings are air-conditioned so it didn't really apply in our indoor spaces but it did apply to buses another letter we sent that was just from our district was in august which was relating to medically fragile students and giving them a remote option um so that did not unfortunately lead to any um change but um that that was certainly uh we were trying to make our voice heard on that um as we do try as much as we can to serve the needs to the greatest extent possible of every child in our district and then most recently this change with the um the 14-day quarantine bring back the right for parents to test their kids and have them come back early if they test negative um well we didn't send a letter on that one there was there were many behind-the-scenes conversations that our district was a part of with health officials and education officials to try to make that happen so i'm just glad to see that come about mr lanzalata apologize floor is yours thank you very much mr fitzgerald just just so we are all transparent on this um the masked mandates the quarantine mandates uh the the regulations that we're following here they are in fact mandated by new jersey law correct it said will can answer that he's already gone over executive order has a force of law correct as i've advised the board previously oh excuse me as a good evening to everyone as of advisor board previously executive orders do have the force of law uh but new jersey department of health guidance is guidance and i appreciate that um and i appreciate that you know for the last year two years i've been a numerous board of education meetings where the question comes up as to the distinction between a mandate and guidance and you know what is the difference and what's the distinction between those two with regards to the mass that mandate under eo251 was recently upheld from constitutional challenge by a federal judge that was a week ago the decision came down finding that it did not infringe on either equal protection or on the right to free speech as far as the guidance it has been i think the general consensus of education attorneys that school districts should follow the guidance of the new jersey department of health in fact you that um some extraordinary circumstances to why you would not do so a board of education uh is is not doing its uh discharging its responsibilities from an ethical standpoint or from any other standpoint if it doesn't follow the guidance that is issued and given to you um and in that regard you know i appreciate and i appreciate everyone's opinions regarding vaccination and the treatment of unvaccinated versus vaccinated individuals i would suggest and i don't mean to get in a belabored discussion or debate about it um distinctions between stu individuals who are vaccinated and unvaccinated have occurred since vaccines were invented quite frankly since the 1920s and since vaccines and it has always been statutory law that during the outbreak of contagious diseases people who cannot demonstrate either immunity to or vaccination from those diseases are subject to just you know different types of uh you know rules and regulations regarding attendance in particular you know vaccinations have been required and are mandated in certain circumstances as you probably all remember i still have the scar for my polio vaccine on my shoulder um you know i know my son had to have his record of mmr dppt and what have you that is you know must be submitted this vaccine is not mandated it is encouraged and the law is very clear during the outbreak of any contagious disease uh individuals who may have been exposed to or are unvaccinated from that contagious disease that provision has been there in the law since the spanish flow since the 1920s so in that regard we're not really doing anything new uh we're not really following any different types of laws always been embodied in 18a and i appreciate parents every parent has the right to make the determinations regarding their children i absolutely support that i also you know support the idea that you know from a mass that infringes on constitutional rights uh needs to be evaluated under strict scrutiny that's why i'm not and have never advocated that a board of education require mass for people in attendance at a board of education because i think this is absolutely constitutionally guaranteed right of the people to assemble and petition the government for the redress of grievances and why should somebody come into the board of education mean be treated differently than somebody going to a township committee meeting why i don't i don't think that would pass a rational basis test can we but that being said um the mass mandate was upheld uh you know governor murphy embodied it in eo251 and then in eo253 if i recall he clarified that any exemption for medical exemption had to be come from a medical professional and had to be documented uh through that process so i do believe executive orders have the force of law and our law and are enforceable and i do not believe a board of education should veer away from uh enforcing an executive order i just uh uh ask one more question if uh well is there are there any repercussions for um a district if they do not enforce the code of law so interestingly enough yes uh there are uh repercussions that are uh outlined both in the executive orders themselves with regards to any individual who doesn't follow an executive order there are also the provisions that the commissioner of education is directed to withhold state aid from districts that don't file the law and it can be an ethical issue for board of education members who recommend not following the law you know everyone's familiar with what the township of middleton board of education did uh interestingly enough that's where the governor lives so we will see what happens with regards to that because you know i mean i think he lives next door to john bon jovi and bruce springsteen in middleton but um yeah still right they're all right there on the navasync river i think um but we'll see what happens with that i mean that that resolution by the board of education um is obviously making the rounds around the education community and it's a topic of discussion and if there's a discussion that would allow me to give guidance to this board of education to move in a direction uh that is different than the direction you're in you will hear from me in that regard you will hear whether and to what extent because i don't think anyone likes what's going on now no one likes this okay and nobody wants this but you are legally required to do what you're doing thank you so much mr clinton thank you mr donia mr lancelot you have any more questions are you okay no honestly thanks antonio for the clarification i appreciate it and i just i appreciate your expertise any other announcements or comments or questions miss ryan i just wanted to announce that the eshim education foundation will be holding their annual event on february 25th at the mansion so save the date casino night yeah yeah yeah i'm so glad you mentioned that well i didn't think they had an official like fancy name like win wine and dine or whatever or win dine and win but it is an event that's going to raise money and they um donate some of their money to our school district so it is a great event to support and participate in they're in the planning stages so save the date thank you miss ryan any other questions or comments miss everhart i just want to wish everybody a safe and fun holiday season and uh enjoy the break well deserved as mrs noel said earlier also to the board have a safe and joyous holiday season if you celebrate and we will see you in january thank you mr heart any other questions or comments all right i'm going to leave off with uh just one comment um mr daniel first of all thank you for the explanation that again i appreciate the clarification that you're able to provide us um secondly uh i'm about to adjourn the meeting and i i just i want to just uh what's up my final adjustment and i i honestly uh you know i i really wasn't i really wasn't gonna like say anything about this tonight and i was literally gonna go home and play fifa and i'd be pretty happy um no but i i wanted to i wanted to extend a thank you to to the board members and and to the administration for the lovely the lovely plant and um i'd honestly you you've you've been a pleasure you you're a pleasure to work with and and to be a part of and i'm very grateful for that and and i and i i get where we are and there's a lot of disagreements and and you know we we have conversations and sometimes we see eye to eye and sometimes we don't i i appreciate um the respect you gave when you came up here and and give your opinions and your thoughts and i hope that you have felt that i have done the same for you uh in that time that we've had together um but i am just looking forward to sitting on one of those spots over there but again i just want to uh i want to thank you guys for everything and um i hope all of you have a wonderful holiday so at this point i will wish to a motion to adjourn uh motioned by miss ryan seconded by mrs all in favor oh thank god

called covid but now as we got a year through it and got a little bit somewhat under control with vaccines masks and everything we are able to have a full capacity here tonight and i know each of these players are very grateful and looking forward to the experience it's something they will always remember as i'm a freshman now in college and i still remember the high school days whether it was playing or in the student section just having that feel of the rivalry game is something they will forever remember looks like north student section is christmas as they have their student section quite full if i can pan the camera over to their section there as you see the north is christmas and east on the far end right across from the their basket there they don't have quite as many people but i asked a few of my friends that are still in high school and they said it's kitchenette uh where and that their theme is cooking up a dub so cooking up a win so some creative themes there and once again it is the northeast rivalry week and tuesday evening we had swimming at columbus east and our girls swimming team for columbus to use the one with a close finish there and our very own columbus north bulldogs boys swimming team won tuesday evening and last night i was very grateful and humbled to be able to bring you guys the wrestling live stream as the columbus east olympians picked up their big win in the crosstown showdown and here tonight your columbus north bulldogs jv basketball team is up on top over the visitors the columbus east olympians we are about two minutes and 15 seconds away here and that first half was a doozy east got off to a good start and north came back and closed out the first half on a big run and took an 18-12 lead north really picked up their defensive pressure and east just couldn't have an answer offensively they scored one bucket in that second quarter so i'm sure halftime adjustments have been made from each team and they are looking forward to come out and get the hard-fought win as it takes to win in this crosstown rivalry once again there is no freshman game east does not have a girls freshman team but north is playing a decent amount of freshman here in this jv game so as a coach i'm sure you're looking forward so that's having your freshman play up on jv get the experience early and hopefully it transitions over to varsity north has a few extra players on their jv team compared to east i wonder fatigue or tiredness will play a part in the second half we shall see we're underneath in minutes here and we should i'll start this second half and we should have a good one on our hands if it's anything like the first half once again after this we will also be streaming the varsity game right here on the bcsc youtube channel [Music] about 10 seconds away to start the second half if you guys would please like and subscribe to the bcsc youtube channel we were also greatly appreciate that and thanks to you guys we are now the number one youtube page for within all school corporations here in the state of indiana so thank you guys very much for supporting and following us along this long awaited journey here and we are about to start this second half here at columbus north high school the olympians will get the ball to start and we are underway here 18 to 12 is our score and the olympians turn the ball over early be north basketball here see if north can keep that hot offensive hand as they had in this second quarter but that is turned over and transition points was no good but the olympians follow their shot get the offensive rebound and puts it up and she has a shot of can get converting an n1 good strong take there by number four jenna goose and she converts making a three-point ball game as an olympian fan that's something you want to see they scored more points just on that possession there as they did in the second quarter good pass three-point shot is up and on its way and no good and we will have a foul reaching foul by number two greta brown will be her second the team's second here and maggie russell will check in for brown and a great job there by the bulldog basketball players stole it and noticed she was close to the out-of-bounds line and threw it off the olympian great smart basketball iq play there hurts by the bulldogs stay on this end looks like the o's have switched from a zone so man-to-man so far it's worked out there's been quite a bit of turnovers by the bulldogs i think that's their second pull-up three on its way no good and out of bounds bulldog basketball go to more of a zone press here through the hands of the bulldogs i gotta get over the timeline and they do and great pass and great job by the bulldogs [Applause] 31 with the basket wilson [Music] another foul committed by the bulldogs bulldog fans not happy that is three quick team fouls committed here early in the second half they get it down low and forces up the shots and no good but kept alive by the o's tips around three-point shot it's on its way and hits back iron and no good a good strong rebound good outlet pass for the bulldogs and the shot is up in a strong but her teammates right there that's elise preston [Music] [Applause] fell right on her hands and she said thank you and put it up for two [Music] 22-15 and another foul committed by the bulldogs the elise preston her second team's fourth bulldogs are doing a good job defensively here when on their inbounds plays taking it close to five seconds she's time for the o's to get it in she drives right tries to find her teammate gets through puts up the strong layup and good messiah trap with the strong finish good find by her teammates the floater off the backboard and no good those look to push the ball down the courts kicks it out it's a number four jenna goose for the owes gets it down low inside tries to go back to her teammate again but a little low and out of bounds north basketball 408 remaining here in the third two on one fast break and north gets it [Applause] olivia johnson with the bucket good job by the bulldogs really pushed the ball and they had numbers on the o's good outcomes come out when you got numbers and they converted and good defense is stopped there by the bulldogs they push it up to russell and the layup is off the mark and number 31 follows it up [Applause] wilson gets it to go again and the olympians will take a timeout and it will be a full timeout and we will send it over to the columbus north cheerleaders three um [Music] [Applause] so there you have it your columbus north bulldogs cheerleaders it'll be hard to get the east cheerleaders as they will be facing the other side probably won't be able to get them on camera but our score is 26-17 3 30 remaining here east basketball after they take a full time out north's last few buckets have came off transition points they're really looking to push the ball out and make sure the o's don't get set defensively and it has worked out team fouls columbus north for the 0-0 and the bulldogs get another turnover and good hustle play by trap pokes it out from behind but we'll go out of bounds we'll be bulldog basketball right-handed floater bank shot is good that is hurt gets the two-point shot to fall she's been trying to get a bunch of those floaters to fall here tonight and she did just that and a good job defensively bulldogs be a 10-second backcourt violation give the ball back to the bulldogs have their first double-digit lead here tonight russell goes to her left jump stops and good job by the o's to stop that and a jump ball possession arrow will stay down on this end 2 45 remaining here in the third north student sections really picking up there they're looking forward to get after it here tonight for the varsity matchup good out of bounds play could not fall north's done a good job offensively they've gotten a couple close looks just couldn't get him to fall crosses over to her left shot is no good long and a foul committed by i think an oh an olympian messiah trap picks up her first and teams first 226 remaining here the east looks like they go to a 2-1-2 zone look and the bulldogs steal it right out of their hands and keep it alive and they fall back to man-to-man preston gets inside and the shot is up and good elise preston with a good take on the left block and goes around the defender and puts it up for two and preston gets their turn over excuse me gets to steal and the bulldogs can really do some damage here if they can convert here off of that turnover russell jump stop fires the 18-foot jump shot off the mark and bounces around and falls in the hands of messiah trap goose baseline jump stop to the top of the key to richard richards through the hands of goose and a turnover by the o's once again something they're going to need to figure out as the season goes on turnovers and it pokes loose and will stay on this end bulldog basketball 105 remaining here in the third and there it is again that same out of bounds play works this time draws the foul will be olivia johnson at the line shooting two richard picks up her first team second and the first one is no good looks like we have grinner brown checking in for the o's and hayden crothers in for the o's excuse me i think greta brown in for the bulldogs and hayden crothers in for the o's got those mixed up there is the second one is up and good johnson goes one for two 31-17 north really went on a big old run here as they did to start the second quarter and another turnover by the o's we got a double dribble call 58.8 seconds remaining here and the bulldogs have done a good job all evening long breaking the press and that's no different and we have a travel violation committed by the bulldogs and the o's break their press goes off the foot greta brown dives for it and a good pass and the shot is no good but draws the foul olivia johnson goes back to the line to shoot two jenna goose picks up her first team's third and she gets the first one to fall this time and johnson go two for two and no good gina goose with the rebound fires it up courts and poked loose but kept alive trap gets inside and strong on the layup and bodies flown everywhere will be bulldog basketball looks like they're gonna get messiah on the foul will be her second 21.6 seconds remaining here in the third quarter looks like the bulldogs coaching staff is gonna have them hold for one last shot and we're gonna have a five second call good job by the o's defensively we'll give them one shots here with 6.7 seconds they need something here quick that fourth quarter is going to be a going to need to be huge offensively and a turnover by the o's coming up on three two one fires it away and long and that will do it for the third quarter where bulldogs lead the olympians 32-17 [Music] uh [Music] here we have it both of our schools cheerleaders we got seven minutes on the clock to start the fourth the olympians are gonna have to do some catching up to do as the bulldogs went on a fantastic run there in the third the east basketball to start the fourth quarter here team fouls all tied up at four 32-17 our score the o's get it in once again we will have the varsity game following this match up here so don't go anywhere and watch the columbus north and columbus eats varsity teams as we have a five second call there by the o's the bulldogs have done a good job all night long scoring off for turnovers see if they can do so here again brown has it pulls it out picked up by craig a good pass to preston sidesteps inside and fires up the shot and no good jump ball possession arrow goes to the bulldogs looks like brown will take it out of bounds see if the bulldogs can get the look they've gotten all night long they had it just a little too hard on the pass it's stolen by craig for the o's she crosses over to her left gives it to goose a wide open shooter on the key is no good and offensive rebound keeps the possession alive craig inside gets it poked loose and the bulldogs with the nether turnover not as olivia johnson picks picks up the steal and the layup is no good at least try to put on her back hip to draw the foul but didn't get the call but we have a foul call here on preston will be her third team's fifth and north still remaining with their press when they get it into number five it's crothers and a turnover by the bulldogs we're gonna have a hold instead of a jump ball kind of surprised by that call and be on victoria will be her third 32-17 our score good strong take by russell's no good but she does draw the foul put her at the line for two messiah trap picks up her third team six and look good from here just didn't go it was in and out she does get one more and she converts [Applause] and goose on the right side back to craig craig needs help she fires it over and a turnover by the o's it's been killing them all night long that's what film is for go back next week and rewatch and learn from your mistakes i'm sure that's what the o's will need to do offensively preston for three it's on its way and no good and four bodies diving at the ball jump ball possession arrow goes to the orange 503 remaining here east needs some hope offensively and they need it quick the trap has it good job by preston to put her hands up at the right time to poke the ball loose and she's pushing the ball down the court pump fake and the pass goes a little long and a bunch of bodies once again diving after the balls possession arrow goes to the bulldogs each of these players here tonight definitely looking forward to this game as they most of them played either travel basketball or middle school basketball with each other and i'm sure they're looking to have those bragging rights to share next time they hang out with their friends as that was throw poked out of bounds east basketball they get it to goose goose to craig floater is off the mark and gets her own rebound power dribble and the shot is up and good for the o's 33 tonight and seen coming up on four minutes pass inside to preston and no good but she'll be at the line shooting two puts the bulldogs in the bonus the rest of the way in this quarter no good on her first as preston's second one bounces around and finds its way in 34-19 our score jenna goose gets inside floater is no good and whistles blow and she'll be at the line for two as gina goose gets it to fall and the second one is good 21-34 and we will take a break here as the o's call a full timeout with 356 remaining here in the fourth once again if you guys would please like and subscribe to the bcsc youtube channel we would greatly appreciate that and we want to give a big thank you to our sponsors you see on your screen forced construction for sponsoring these live streams here 3 56 remaining here bulldog basketball after the timeout once again the varsity matchup will follow so no need to turn your tv off just keep it right here on this youtube channel and we will bring you the rest of the evening here at columbus north high school as the past was a little bit too long and out of bounds east possession leos get it in they're in a tough situation here you want to run your offense but you also want to hurry up and get shots up quickly try to cut into this deficit you have here in the fourth and the take and shot is no good tips around the o's get it goose at the top of the kishi fires up at three long and another offensive rebound but poked away and the bulldogs get it and they could possibly have numbers russell gets it to go [Applause] a good find to russell hits her right in stride and makes it the easy two point layup and the bulldogs pick up the foul puts them excuse me puts the olympians in the bonus they're all tied up at seven team fouls with 306 remaining here in the fourth and she converts the first will make it 22-36 and with that she gets one more free throw and leaves that one a little short be bulldog basketball good hands by goose he saves it trap at the top of the key craig drives baseline finds her way inside but the shot is short and she draws la foul and allison craig will be at the line shooting too maggie russell picks up her second and that one rolls around and falls out and gets the second one to fall and a great find there but a good hustle play by jenna goose but she is called with the foul maybe got her with her body there she got the block but the ref calls it a foul jenna goose picked up her second close call there and the first one is off the mark and the second one doesn't fall for the bulldogs coming up on 235 here in the fourth quarter spins back to her right jenna goose attacks inside off the mark and good play by trap to goose three-point shot pump fake goes inside and a good block there by the bulldogs kept alive by trap tries to find goose but a little too hard craig at the top of the key sets her feet and it's good [Applause] makes it a 10-point ball game with 204 remaining here big time shot there by allison craig and we will have a timeout taken by east be a 30-second timeout so after the timeout here will be bulldog basketball as allison craig just hit a big three to cut the deficit down to 10.
i didn't see anything though i know i just noticed that as we were talking about i was like no or missed that so it's based on you know primarily discussion with the facilities director rich corvette you know we go through the list we look at what are the things that have to be done now and what can we push out and roughly you know the 26 million if you look at it which i'll show you in a minute we're roughly allocating somewhere in the neighborhood of five million dollars per year over the five years we can move as part of the process we can move items out more items in but that 5.4 million as i'll kind of show you those are things that we really can't wait on you know for very much longer so you couldn't take an item for next year and push it out to your five you know sometimes we can push it out to year two and that's what you know we're responsible collectively to do look at what's the request how big is the request are we comfortable with the size of the request and then do we want to move items around instead we'll go in with five million but usually on average over the past couple years i mean i mean if you look over the last 10 years of the first year request they've approved somewhere around 60 of the request you know but it's to be clear it's not that they say no to it it's typically a delay is what it is they just push a little bit more and say yeah what would be the delay or is there a contractual delay now it wouldn't be a contractual delay you know the issue with delaying is if you're going to do something this year and you push it off the year you're going to have escalation you know whatever we use four to five percent as construction escalation um so it's it's a judgment call you know we you know i don't want to stand here and say anything is in at risk of catastrophic failure but if you look at the zoo little roof which you know we have been pushing out for a couple years that's a three million dollar roof system we've got to get to it you know we're starting to get nervous about it it's not leaking but it is way past its intended life and it's a hypalon roof so you can't replace it with a like material it's even difficult to patch if it does start to leak um the uh i guess part of the reduction was the i guess the freezer i'll call it the freezer extension project at northern school um what was so what's the patchwork solution for that for i guess the remaining years so the one of the advantages of um renovating the cafeterias is to increase the amount of students we could get through the serving line we did that at too little you know we essentially doubled the number we went from one to two serving lines so we're able to get the students through the line quicker so less time is spent waiting in line and getting their food more time is spent you know eating the food and socializing with their classmates so that would be the effect if we don't do the norton cafeteria at this point yes we do replace equipment to the extent we can we re-work the kitchen to make it more functional and we improve the flow with the serving line which was the intended improvement at north so the storage is is is okay well i think that wasn't there a problem there with the condenser or something like that we'll get by with the storage because we've been getting by with that you know for several well for more than several years because that's really the original cafeteria space right when the school was built even though we added an extension we never increased the size of the calf or the serving area so knowing that potentially we have a school being built in three years we can get by and if we need to replace some equipment well that's kind of we're very important that we're still functional operational working on and i guess the other thing to point out in the event we don't get approval for you know the plan as proposed the school monetization plan you have to remember that that nine million dollars is still pending out there we will have to get to it so that's another way to look at the nine million dollars okay thank you so long on the first page take out cheshire high school replace heating oil well because we had we have planned to pull out the tank and there was really a question mark whether we needed to replace the tank so cheshire high school right now we pulled out the tanks this summer as planned and during the council deliberations it was decided we don't need to fund the replacement we would only do the replacement if there's a sense that you want to have a backup to the natural gas which we've never you know certainly over the last decade had an issue with natural gas supply but there is you know an argument argument that could be made that because that is the emergency shelter for the town we should replace that tank so we didn't go that direction in the capital plan and that's why that one came out in particular was through those deliberations we can always go back in and add a tank if that's the decision that's made thank you okay we're good i'm just gonna walk you through so this 26 million 497 this is the detail this is the last sheet that i handed out it's got the yellow and green this is the detail that makes it up so i wanted to start at the bottom first which is the first year of the capital request is a 5.445 million that's in the uh hand out the letter size hand that i just gave out i also wanted to point out that this 2 million 25 000 is what was approved and funded for the current fiscal year so that's what we've got to prove and then if you look along the bottom you can see that it's 5.4 million as a request for your one 5.9 million 5.2 4.2 and then 5.6 million dollars so it's kind of spaced out pretty evenly i would say um so if you want to just think about it globally you know what we need to invest in the remaining schools per year over the next five years assuming everyone agrees with the proposal is about five million dollars per year that's the capital investment that we have to make and then if we if we look at it this particular worksheet is sorted by building and then we have a description of what the request is so the i'm going to highlight um some of the big ones so here at cheshire high school this is the kitchen upgrade it's 4.2 million we actually had a study done by fletcher thompson back in 2014 to determine what the you know what the cost of the improvements would be this would be a pretty substantial renovation it would increase the size of the cafeteria so we wouldn't have to cross into the commons for lunch right so there's a traffic flow issue you have food going back and forth against the main corridor we would look to solve that by pushing the cafeteria out towards route 10 so you make that a bigger space you would also improve the functionality of the flow for students as they're purchasing lunch and paying for lunch and you would also expand and make a more modern presentation of the different types of food so you know right now we kind of have these pockets if you've been in the high school recently you know your sandwich area is kind of hidden in one corridor the salads are separate nothing is really displayed attractively we have limitations on what we could do so this would modernize it the way you would see in a newer school building um kind of moving along here the hvac improvements for the high school you know we're we're doing this in small increments just to try and spread the costs out over the years but we would need about a million dollars just to start phasing in air conditioning if we go a little further window replacements at cheshire high school we've been roughly contributing about 250 000 a year for windows we really need to up that pace even the windows that were replaced about a little over 20 years ago those are starting to fail so you know by increasing the investment to 500 000 per year we have a chance at catching up and getting all the windows replaced we still do have single pane original window sets at cheshire high school we do have to replace that there is an energy efficiency improvement by replacing the windows not to mention they're more attractive the more comfortable for the students inside the classroom then there's a group of district-wide projects they tend to be relatively small so you question andrew about dodd we've got 250 for stage renovation 650 for the fire alarm control system which we want to replace in year one of this capital budget what we have is functional but it's an older system it's not addressable it doesn't it doesn't give us all the modern day features that a fire alarm system should have in the school so we want to do that this year if we can another 420 for different types of hvac so we have 420 500 000 another 150 000 a million dollars for the roof replacement at dodd you could see we didn't get 475 000 approved for this year but we needed another million dollars um and i think this is bare bones you know dodge roof system there's several on the building they're all past the 20-year life intended life cycle they are out of warranty we've been stripping and seaming the dot roof for several years now just to keep it as leak free as possible but you know the roof will fail so we're going to have to start replacing it in chunks 475 was approved we did ask for 900 000 so we'll do as much as we can with 475 this year and dodge windows again for the most part original windows single pane we need two and a half million dollars for that you could see we pushed that out into year four and five with the plan so i mean i'll tell dodd's you know that's four million something like that just ballparking it um 650 for um fire alarm control system um if it's antiquated why are we pushing it out to 2024 and why aren't we doing it now well that's too little we're okay yeah we're prioritizing it right you're still on that no well that's we're asking for this year yeah and we push doolittles out again we're trying to balance how much funding we need per year and and managing the priority again the system works you know that's it's not failing but it's also not an addressable modern system questioned yeah so if you need 600 000 to do all of the roofing at god middle school what was what's behind the decision to only allocate 475 trying to manage into a number that was going to be funded but that means we can't do the whole roof right so like a lot of things in our plan you'll see that we tend to look at it from a worse first basis that's the way we do the labs that's the way we do the sidewalk replacements what's the worst we get those done first so there's a balance to strike here again i don't this is not anything on this list that we think is in catastrophic failure mode or as a safety concern but it's also not going to last for much longer if it's on the five-year capital plan so it needs to be addressed it needs to be funded can i ask ben i know is very very discussion with this but moving forward could we could you do these pie charts for the first year and the five-year purse by school just so we can see where the money is i can do anything you ask for within reason no i mean i just think that it would be good to see because yeah today so at the next you know presentation um with the planning committee i'll certainly have that okay and you gotta well just two more things i just wanted to throw another couple of things out um i already mentioned do a little group so we're asking for 50 000 this year to get the roof system design and we're asking for the three million that we think we need for next year this was shifted here we tried to get the 50 000 under three million so it did get shifted um do little needs new windows as well and this was you know i already talked about the highland cap improvement we would like to do we also need to start addressing highlands windows islands i know it's our newest school but you know 52 years um we've got a lot of got a lot of use out of the windows but you know we have to start replacing those as well so that's kind of really the top level first cut what i wanted to say is there may be additional items we will need to add not in year one is the likelihood but in years two through five so you know we're still working through some of that so the next time we present this it might change a bit i don't expect anything gigantic but just wanted to put that out there as a caveat has there been any movement on uh getting an estimate for a total overhaul to age back to doolittle we well we requested one for dodd which we could use as as a as a benchmark for what it would cost to do little we actually did get a proposal for the the estimate and the vendor is working on the estimate now okay so when we get that again i think we could use that as a rough order of magnitude what does it look like to take a school that doesn't have very much in the way of air conditioning and an older hvac system to the extent it has hvc what is that going to cost that todd that's bigger than doolittle obviously um and the firm that um that we're using will also get to see the quality of work on the estimate so we can decide if we want to branch out additional schools great thank you frank um the energy decommit the highland generator have you gotten the interval demand data by chance um we do you got it i think so i'll double check tim okay just as a reminder i know you're going to pick up on that one and i know what you want to do at highland instead of um you know like a diesel fuel generator look at some other type of of the system yeah so the basic idea is technology is changing related to energy there might be an opportunity to instead of just buy a generator to possibly buy a generator and a battery that could actually save money also it was last week i was there's a webinar by eversource the green banking ui talking about state incentives for batteries program kicks off on january 1st it's a big deal for nine years it's coming from her up but it's going to be significant incentives to get this stuff rolled down uh because it goes beyond our schools statewide uh the benefit of having battery back up yeah and just so everybody understands what this tim's referring to the highland emergency generator request of 220 000 the idea there is that we have a permanent emergency generator at cheshire high school which is our it's our primary emergency shelter but we found uh and i don't even remember what storm it was we found that we needed to use two buildings one you know for some daycare purposes for some internet and wi-fi access as well as the high school so island kind of serves as a secondary backup site hence the logic for that also highland has you know we call it the government freezer but it's a freezer that's dedicated for the district to store food service items some of it comes from the united states department of agriculture every year but it's general freezer storage for the entire district so we don't want to lose the contents in that freezer an emergency generator would prevent us from having to roll up the towns generator you know we've had incidents in recent years where even though the town has two rolling generators and our schools including highland have hook up we found ourselves not being able to roll a generator to a site because like we've lost the one we lost the main generator at town hall so one of the emergency generators had to go there and one to get where else it had a roll to so it's just not enough yes my basic concern is that i have no problem with that moving forward as an emergency generator but in light of changes in technology and economics i think we have to have a real uh consideration of the alternatives before moving forward with that just to see if it makes sense yeah understood okay that's well i have to present so just a quick question on what does uh escalation how is escalation working for this i'm thinking specifically of the when you mentioned the little 3 million every few years we do adjust our numbers for escalation we didn't this year that estimate that we got to do a little you know we obtained last year so it's it's in the right ballpark and you know when we go out to bid you know depending on what what's happening in the market i think it's a solid range so we'll be plus or minus a few percentage points thank you sir all right let's move into uh the main event here school modernization item number four we have our team from full years here who has been diligently managing some subcontractors as well as doing some work themselves we've been doing probably the last couple weeks or so we've had a in the little hiatus weeks with elections but um we've been doing some due diligence um efforts at the house of tonal property in the north end of the camp of town where there's a potential site for one of the schools um as well as the norton parcel as well we performed what they call phase one environmental site assessment with lion engineering that's basically um a historical review of the sites um looking at the past history um of those sites really you know from agricultural is really big impact obviously we're looking for areas of concern in environmental type of issues on both of those so in those studies there wasn't anything really any blockbusters that we see for a budget at the cosmo property it's primarily the use of pesticides and herbicides in past it was used as a agricultural um typically those do not wash out with rain they stick to the soil they stable typically through the first 12 inches of the soil so what's important to understand those really is how we have to manage those if they exceed certain dep levels or there's a residential exposure criteria limit that's really important for basically touching it for children you know if they're touching us they exceed a certain um limit we basically have a barrier that's what we how we handle typically on sites you get disclosed off-site it's expensive and it's hard to find sites actually accept that material these days but the other one is the pollutant mobility criteria has more to do with groundwater pollution that's what is important but the other one usually kind of takes precedence when we're talking about schools for the most part um so that one is pretty straightforward um they did see there was a house in the corner of the parcel i think it records maybe more uh um jarvis and aryan and they suspect it could be an underground storage tank there but it's local um so i don't think anything we need to look into that right away we may want to we're going to be uh looking to lying in to procure clothes to take some soil samples and analyze them support the herbicides and pesticides we know up front when we get down for it get into the budgets and the site work at the norton site on that somewhat similar um most of those concerns with the existing building you know they'll say like the boil around um you know as an area of concern um there was you have a new 8 000 gallon storage tank there and there's reports of an older 8 000 soda reporter i'm not sure when that would have been because the tank that's in north now it's been there for just about 30 years and there's a fiberglass yeah maybe like 90s i think that is whatever report so they basically just identified areas that we need to be aware of um and look at it's mostly in the existing existence any aoc is in the undeveloped portion of the property were they all building specific um no there was one i think if i remember the back right they spotted a uh oil like 55 gallon barrel drum that's suspect you know how long it's been everyone knows i didn't see it but you know it's that one you know one part of the parcel that let us take a look at it um it may not even impact the project but when you we we actually ran into a project where they there's some actually buried 55 gallon drums we're putting the utility in the very back side we would never suspect it ran into it so we had to remediate it we took care of it phase one here was that site was basically undeveloped or farmland norton yes yeah i think uh obviously there's the wooded area um and i think they're saying that the part that was probably you know station that's a big concern obviously you know nothing we're surprised at um that would you know have pause um we also did some geotechnical warnings these are preliminary ones we will projects move forward the design team would be responsible for doing more in-depth more comprehensive one um basically they take horns every 50 feet on center for that but this should just give us an idea of what's in the ground at the tunnel property basically the recommendation is keep the school up on the higher side of the site closer to marion um the lower side of the site i think you know you can actually suspect as you get towards the wetlands the soils aren't as um supportive for a building there um i think it's some of the test bits most of the pilot maybe recommended doing fields back there which would probably be appropriate use back in that area um and certainly if some of these soils you know if we can't um if they're so good we can use those for some of the fields hopefully um and get what we call that insight we don't want to take material off and we don't want to bring it were they basically building corners or were they just kind of site-wide i mean i can look at the report i think what we did is we looked at a couple of test beds and they kind of superimpose them and try to get you know a majority of the areas where the building might be to give us you know a good representative sample given those options again if we go out one do is not only for the building but if there's any drainage structures we want to know that too if there's any deep utilities because that can impact um you know this excavation but i don't think any of them really hit any ledge that's like any legendary they suspected they're all west yeah we're probably going to want to avoid that ladder we got to provide that to them because they know that they didn't know of any sewers going through we want to make sure we give them that that utility map that we have uh so they can know that in the report and then norton uh no surprises there um that was pretty or special type of foundations that are a lot more expensive to budget so we have those reports back that's good again we're going to be um some proposals for the base to take some sampling so we can understand that up front that's really important uh it's important to give it to the design team going out with our so they know what they have to deal with and make sure they're responsible for managing that um so just so everyone here knows that their next charge is to do environmental soil sampling of the hazardous property to delineate what the actual levels of peasant size are whatever composition is out there and also to do a traffic study for the marion yep we have that proposal and i think next month um i think we're going to be requesting approval that's a more high level it's not super duper i think it's it's not a fully in-depth traffic study um if i understand it john compared it back a little bit give us an engineering you know you know a stainless so it's looking at you've got to move a lot of topsoil um what is it it's like up to i don't know on the property um just i'm honest uh you're moving it because it's not stable or you're moving it just out of the sense of caution understanding it could be contaminated moving it or sampling well i mean the report talks about just essentially scraping that yeah so when we go to build a structure okay behind the town apartment there's about a foot of a console that material is not suitable to put a foundation on top because it's organic material and that stuff that will settle over time and you can practice your building essentially so we need to make sure that the bottom of the footies are on stable soil that can that can bear the weight of the building and it's appropriate so basically we scrape that off push it to the side get down to the soil good good earth put our foundations on and build back up and we'll want to reuse those soils we'll estimate the quantities during design and use those in in the final layout of the um the proposed project when we when they do the grades the grading and playgrounds and part a lot of complex you know programs that can kind of give them the quantities we just want to make sure we're all balanced like we're not taking off we're not bringing them in we have to scrape those soils out of the way to get to good um what they call um load-bearing uh soil for the and so um you know we're dealing with open property uh with the catholic counter property but you're surren you've got neighborhoods surrounding is there going to be an impact on those homes by moving that tough soil either in terms of runoff or anything else that we need to be aware of and yeah no good question so in any type of development whether it's a school or any proposed development planning and zonings and commissions engineering departments in every town they'll be what they call an existing analysis versus a storm runoff now look at all where the storm runoff is typically they'll concentrate to a point they'll they'll calculate how much runoff given different they call design years so even more intense storms they'll go how much is coming off any development has to be net zero runoff um through that's where you see the tension basins you know on sites you know the you know developments of these big detention structures what that is meant to do is one for water quality two for the quantity to slow that water down retain it so that it doesn't go off faster than what it was naturally when we started so the answer is we have to design it so it doesn't impact neighboring parcels the soil itself that's going to all that's going to come into the grading plants and into the drainage plants we'll have to take into account the building because your roof structure is called an impervious surface that's going to you know obviously run off and go to your roof leaders and so forth into the storm system so any additional payment will probably be more payment in these projects than what there is now that's additional so i'm just looking at this in comparison to your report and the diagram itself but nothing's being mentioned of that and then report yeah that one what you're holding is a was the preliminary one what they actually that was before they went to the site so when they got to the site you know they adjusted down to the five so that's combining i'm just trying to figure out and now that it's adjusted what are you combining i'm not sure what they did in the final sampling america they're so this was again this was probably their plan previously going out and we we do what they call a one day effort because the golf we have to run another track track for the the equipment for another day they try to get six in a day if they get five it's not a requirement to get six they probably they were trying to maximize where they were taking them they just didn't get to do six in that day to bring them back for one more it's like it'd be like i think it was another twenty five hundred dollars for the rig just for the day so it's it's kind of somewhat of a economic consideration as well but from what they did though do we feel is there's enough field work done to give us an accurate indication of the site capacity yeah so what we're doing this is preliminary when we get in design they're gonna we're gonna do a lot more of these with the design team what this is doing is is there a budget buster here is there something is there a ledge is there organic soils that go down 15 20 feet perfect example um recently down southington we did some preliminary warnings at the daranovsky school in one part of the site there's a huge part of fill it's about 13 feet deep in one portion of the site and they're recommending ram aggregate beers versus regulars and these are like more complex type of footings that's what we want to know so we're creating that budget we want to account for that and that's the primary reason for all this due diligence is is there a budget buster you know in you know we might have might not be able to feel as deep as we can like you're hitting like say up here is it jarvis that goes on the high side right mary and there is america see if we're up there and there's like two feet three feet down that's gonna be a problem because it's so high we're probably gonna carve into that a little bit and if we want to do it we can't it just costs you money and drilling and potentially blasting or you know pounding the rock and hammering away at it that that's much more expensive to get rid of obviously more labor intensive and heavier equipment we can do it but what's uh i mean we've done boards where we knew the rock was there but when we took we took the core out of it we thought it was fractured we got a solid lunge cost us 400 to take it down to the appropriate level so we're just trying to do our due diligence um to a reasonable degree with these and then once we get a design we'll do a lot more of the architecture but there's no from the initial from what we're seeing if we have a top soil and like you know it's 20 feet they're all filled and yeah just bad soil or really organic and silky or a lot of play you don't want to go around clay because it's going to expand contract and it might be how much is going to cost the builder maybe we need to look at something else it's just a discussion you can when you do it you can get surprises too because you could have played that's like you know 50 feet deep 10 feet long then 50 feet deep of sand thank you that's probably going to happen unfortunately we're doing this and we've hit stuff right in between yeah and if we i think it was in stones and we did burns and um we had a lot of we we missed so many large pockets boulders we pulled out unfortunately i don't have x-ray vision into the ground otherwise be much more you know i'm sorry i was looking at the map when you i think you were talking about exactly the thing i wanted to ask you about which was legendary did you say that there was no legendary or if it was legendary let me let me pull the report because i just i was looking at the map noticing that these feet sort of decline into the more flat soil farmland area yeah and i just wasn't sure if that was if you discovered if that was ledge or not we just pulled up our [Music] or if it even matters away from that but yeah let me just pull that up so i'm not guessing here i think to your point adam if there's you know even if there were legs way in the back of the lot if we're not building there it's not going to affect us when you sight the building we look at us no he asked about marion yeah look at the actual it's like i always get visions of like that construction has been going on at the uh the edge of town on the waterberry side for all these years and it's like been blasting things forever and you know just want to make sure we don't have any problems like that for that my my other questions were about norton uh you mentioned a traffic study about the castle town property was there going to be a traffic study at the in the norton area because i know with the act if and i guess leading into that was the uh the access road going out uh that would exit out to sharon drive uh thereby bringing more bus traffic through the sharon drive area and was that going to be examined and or number one is it possible number two if it is possible uh is there is there going to be a traffic study down there also increased volume right let's go from four to six the initial thinking there was that the connection from the sharon drive may just be during the construction approach and process and that the traffic school traffic would still be coming off from the other direction once that new school was in place and the existing school was demo so that you'd start to be flipping the site the school the new school potentially be on the back side the field would then be towards the front side but your traffic ultimately would likely come from that same direction but that's something you know the architects would end up having to look at and determine whether or not they want to come from that back end uh not just for the construction portion of it but also for the you know eventual maybe the bus route may come through there right because depending on what the approach is that that could likely result in another traffic study certainly but um so not yet but not yet no that was not so i know those initial tests that seem to really hinge on having that bus traffic sort of come in from sharon and circle around and kind of come back out that same way for whatever reason instead of having it come back down to 42.
and uh lastly we want to encourage families to come to your child's School site if you haven't yet we are offering a free at home covid test kit that can be used to help make sure your child is healthy and ready to come back to school after the holiday so that is just um a tool that we are offering if you would like it and yes there are so many wonderful things happening in our district and we look forward to continuing to do great things in the New Year araa wishes everyone a restful and safe holiday break thank you foreign are you there all right Steve uh somebody from Teamsters shows up later we'll go ahead and call on you um at this point we'll go ahead and move on to item 3.03 uh California School Employees Association Sharon are you here or anybody from CSEA that is uh doesn't mean to speak Sharon yes I I am here can you can hear me I hope um good evening and congratulations on Mr Quintero on becoming our new board president and to all the other new positions for the board members good evening Dr Bauer um not a lot tonight I've read through the agenda in the book and and it looks very good and um I was real happy to hear Maria Martinez speak on all the new and wonderful things that are happening um I've read a few articles in the San Jose Spotlight that are negative and and I understand why and I am hoping that in the near future the area does get a um a fair settlement and and things can move forward but the one thing that they don't put in are all the good things and that's what makes it sad for Alan rock my children were Alum Rock students many years ago I actually graduated eighth grade from Alum Rock School many many years ago and um but it as um it does have a lot to offer and I feel sad sometimes that people are not aware and hopefully with um moving forward everybody can hear and become a part of and be active in all the good things and one good thing for me today I got to see my three grandchildren perform their Christmas program and they're six nine and eleven so that was very exciting and and um to see it's been a difficult season for my family and myself but I got to see the Christmas through my grandkids eyes and that does bring a smile during a difficult time so with that I would just like to say merry Christmas happy New Year have a safe restful happy holiday with your families and everybody out there stays safe and enjoy thank you so much right uh moving on to animal 3.04 Alum Rock Educators Association good evening um I actually have a couple of things that I wanted to address before I um before I get into my the ideas that I actually had prepared I'm not sure I was just sent a text actually from my daughter earlier tonight about um I'm not sure if you're aware but I think that you should be about the possible um social media Tick Tock challenge that's um scheduled for tomorrow um that what the was sent out to her school and and staff said that they became that they were informed that they were unsubstantiated threats circulating on Tick Tock regarding school Mass violence on tomorrow Friday December 17th hopefully you're aware of it I know the police are aware of it and that um you're taking whatever steps that need to be taken I appreciate that I know that we've had some challenging um incidences uh the a couple of the middle schools in the last week or two um and so yeah just so you're aware of this and it's on your radar um the other thing before I get into some of my what I had planned to say is that I I realized that you chose last year to do this new type of format for the board meetings um as a participant it it has a lot of um shortcomings for one of the things that if I I would like for you to reconsider going back to where we can actually see who is participating in the board meeting um even if we can't see faces if we could at least see participants names and number the number of people I have we have no way of knowing whether there's any more than the six faces that we see on our screen we don't know if there's 20 people here or if there's 200 people here so if there's a way that that could be modified or at least some time along the evening if you can let us know how many people are participating in this meeting it would it would be something that we would like to know so moving on um I was really hoping for a Christmas miracle this year regarding a settlement to our bargaining agreement but obviously that didn't happen now we are going to begin the brand new year of 2000 2022 in the same place which is not a very happy place uh obviously I don't need to explain that to you because it's your decisions that are holding us back from reaching an agreement yes I know it takes both parties to bargain a reasonable settlement but you're the side controlling how the money is being spent sure area could agree to an unreasonably or unfair low offer and move us out of stagnation after all we did it for the last two years and where did it get us it got the teachers uh to drop to the lowest end of the county and starting salaries put us in a place of unfilled teaching positions because so many people left our district and we have nothing to attract teachers to come to Alum Rock now it put many of our teachers in impossible Financial situations since the cost of living has increased dramatically in recent years as I'm sure you all have felt the same it has put our students in overcrowded classrooms with substitutes we're more crowd control is taking place rather than well the well planned out educational programs because either there wasn't a teacher assigned in the first place where the teachers have become so burned out they are getting sick both physically and emotionally and having to take some of their days off where have your proposals gotten us well we're now in fact finding our teachers will begin working to rule at the beginning of January which almost sounds like it's something illegal or unethical when in actuality all it means is that we're going to do what we're paid to do nothing more nothing less the good news for the district is that the settlements from the last two years of area receiving a zero percent increase to the salary schedule has shown a significant increase in the district's ending balance I could go on and on about how we got where we are but to be truthful I am much more concerned about where we are going to end up and I'm not just referring to our labor dispute I you I heard it from other teachers that spoke Tonight from One from a brand new first-year teacher in Alum Rock that really tapped into what I am have been worried about and and very concerned about moving forward I committed almost half my life to this school district it honestly means a lot to me in many ways both the good and not so good it has made me who I am I am genuinely and deeply concerned about what this the future holds for the Alum Rock School District and the students that we serve obviously we have been a part of many changes over the last decade and most noticeably since the kovic covet pandemic hit our teachers have done their very best to face the challenges but what I am seeing lately is really different they're tired at times distraught frustrated angry and as you've heard many of them are looking to not only leave Alum Rock but some are looking to leave teaching all together I hear from more and more of our season teachers not just those in the their first five years but those with 10 12 15 and more years of teaching who are planning to leave Alum Rock at the end of this year they simply cannot afford to stay here any longer especially when they can have their pick of districts and make a lot more money as again another area member mentioned earlier my concern that I'm sharing with you is I don't know if you have thought about what the situation is going to put the district in next fall when we can't get anyone to teach our students I'm not saying this as a scare tactic we don't need anything else to fear I am bringing this to your attention because it's real and it's something that you need to plan for it can't be ignored it can't be put off you may think there's a problem now but those problems are going to pale compared to what the future of this District holds if you continue putting the teachers at the bottom of your list of priorities I hope I'm wrong I I honestly hope I'm wrong but I've seen it coming and I see it escalating just ask yourselves if you were new to this area and you were looking for a teaching job what would attract you to come to Alum Rock why would you want to start a career here before any of the other districts setting aside the obvious Treasures that we have in our students I really hope that you can take a look at the big picture of where we are headed and where you want to be and what needs to be done in order for the Alum Rock School District to have a future in the meantime I do hope that you enjoy your holidays with your family and friends I wish all of you good health and happiness in the new year to come please take some time over the next few weeks and over if you're lucky enough to have a break to think about what kind of future you would like to see for this District thank you all right move on to item 3.05 superintendent thank you for president um for a moment I thought that I was going to pass but um uh I wanna wish um Everybody also a good and safe holiday um it's not going to be easy for me it's not going to be easy for me I was a teacher for 12 years and my daughter is a teacher and I'm an educator in everybody um has a very right now it's difficult to be a superintendent very difficult um I know that it would be very easy to just say do it it's over we all are happy and then we don't have enough to pay our what we have to pay it's very difficult to hear you know that there's a there's a perception that my contract is millions of dollars when it's not um and as a matter of fact it's not there's no money for that and the board will consider that it's very difficult to hear um the questions about what is being done with the money we have 22 sites um with 8 000 students and every time I get an email I get a call I get a text I take it with me because I do care and I do respect I might not say the things that want to be heard and I totally get that I totally get that we are in that process in a very difficult process of negotiating and I honor that process and I really from the bottom of my heart just wanna be very clear that this board and this Administration including myself honor and respect profoundly every single staff member that the fact that our finances are so challenging has never diminished the admiration the care and the love that this team has felt for each and every one of one thousand and two hundred staff members and 8 125 students in all of their families I do wish you a safe and happy holiday thank you all right moving on to item 3.06 for Christine's communication the comments uh I'll go ahead and call you as I see you here uh board member Mana yes thank you president I just uh want to briefly um acknowledge our past our past board officers particularly president my ex-president era and ex-vice president now president um Andres Quintero um you know it's it's diffic having been you know president the time before that I know how difficult it is to try to appease you know or try to um do all the things that you wish you could do and that you could agendaize and that you could pass and that you could direct staff to do you know I appreciate the challenge that that is and I guess right now I'm speaking more directly to ex-president era um and so I want to thank you for the the leadership that you've given us over the past year in these difficult times these challenging times um you know I I think I think I speak for myself I guess but I think I speak for the rest of the board in that you know we we wish we lived in a world with unlimited resources or even sufficient just sufficient resources to be able to do what we would love to do with regards to you know programming and Staffing and all the things that that everyone here in what I consider to be our Alum Rock family as a former student as a parent of Alamar graduates and a board member I consider this my alma family and I wish that you know there does come a time I hope there comes a time when things um react the reality is different and and decisions are easier but I know the challenges that you've gone through or you went through this past year and and yet we I think we've had we had a very successful year in spite of you know detractors that we may hear from externally um or you know that people who die out or or and sometimes very rightfully so have their opinions but you know that's the reality and and with that you know we have we were still able to move forward um a lot of positive things and I think we continue to in my opinion to change the narrative I always say you know there are things that we can improve on always and I don't um you know I'm not here to say that this district is perfect obviously we're not and I don't think any district is um but I do think it's important for the well-being of the district long term to highlight those things that do go well and to get that narrative out there so that the reality of all the things that we've talked about at infinitum throughout the months and years um is out there to those who who can then bring resources to the district who then can bring Partnerships to the district who can have the confidence in us to be able to bring those resources such that we then increase our likelihood that we can you know pass those those resources on it and hopefully change the way things look but um I guess to close it off thank you uh ex president and it's vice president um for for the leadership over the past year and I look forward to continuing to move forward in spite of all the challenges um and the realities that face us and the difficult to Impossible decisions that we as board members need to make um I'm still optimistic about where we can all go and and finally I just um Echo the statements of many that I hope that everyone has a safe and um reflective um winter season holiday season and and we can come back with Renewed Energy to the extent possible to try to work through things in the name of our students and families so thank you board member you gotta unmute yourself well pitfalls of of Zoom hit balls of Zoom uh first of all I do want to uh thank trust uh trustee Herrera loera now work and you know and you you and your previous role is uh board vice president and uh Krusty bejarano and his uh previous role was leaving this board through 2021 uh very very challenging year uh in in the in the entire existence of this District uh you know uh you know uh we thought we had a uh light at the end of the tunnel with the vaccines and it looked like uh you know the situation did improve but we still find ourselves in the thick of this pandemic unfortunately uh although in a much better place than when we were in in December 2020 uh so I I want to thank uh thank you and validate the work that you all did in um keeping this ship of the district going through a very very uh tough year uh I own I also wanna uh thank my colleagues for your trust they have placed in me uh in their by selecting me as vice president for this for this year uh you know I look forward to a constructive relationship I mean constructive uh working relationship with the board president and the board clerk who uh continue keeping uh keeping this District moving uh I want to reflect on the fact that you know even though we've had a difficult year we've still been able to do some good things uh we served six and a half million meals over the 18 the first 18 months of the pandemic and we are first we serve meals over the summer and we're still serving meals to this day so I'm very proud of the practice this community-based school district is still going above and beyond and you know as crucial Partners in the Alum walk Community for you know as it has been for Generations not only educating the children at Alum Rock but also providing a helping hand uh in tough times uh you know uh you also wanted to also note that uh you know uh though it was my idea I want to thank my colleagues on the board and the superintendent for supporting me and reclaiming our 90th anniversary which was delayed because at the run of the pandemic but we had an opportunity to uh commemorate an important milestone in the history of Alum Rock into oh you know show to our community uh you know that we have been there in tough times and uh even now as we are still in times we are still there you know in order to uh see to it that the children are better off academically at the end of the day and then when they came in at 8 A.M in the morning and also the fact that you know we are truly a community resource whether it be uh providing additional academic support and yes to to meals to people who would have had difficulties in uh keeping food on the table in such troubled times uh you know I also want to kind of make a on a good note report that you know I along with the uh trustee Jorge Pacheco in the Oak Grove District we lobbied the County Board of Supervisors to take the first step into creating a public broad public broadband internet service provider to uh ensure that we reduce the digital divide in this County and you know especially as it pertains our district where we have had issues with uh connectivity to you know get the county to step in to help resolve that so that our students can you know uh have that internet connection with this and also important to their educational experience and uh you know we'll score that uh tomorrow I will be embarking on my last you know leg of the my school psych visits which will mean that uh you know I will have visited every school in the Alum Rock School District before the end of the year so I'm excited for tomorrow to see the students and see the children and see the teachers in the classroom and hopefully get a chance to see the challenges of providing an education for our children and what we can do to support that and you know um I uh I know that you want to Echo that times are tough you know they are challenging but uh you know I I know that you know it's still a work in progress but I I am hopeful that we can we can get to a settlement somehow I you know I am hopeful that you know eventually uh the differences can be bridged and we can uh get to that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow uh so on that note I want to wish everyone uh my colleague on the board the superintendent Administration uh teachers classified staff parents and students of this District a happy holiday season uh as well as a safe one and uh we will see you all back in the new year thank you very much Mr President foreign thank you uh president Quintero so um it was an honor to serve this District as a president this last school year um it's been difficult as it's been said I'm not going to repeat it we're all feeling it whether we're governing this District or working in this District or a parent of this District we're all feeling it um as a governing board member as you all remember we started off making some really tough decisions you know involving schools and um uh 7-Eleven committee and um then you know at some point deciding if the children were going to come back to class you know were they going to be safe um I mean decisions that you know I don't wish upon anybody right and then you were all part of making those along uh with me and um we know that even though we're not exactly where we want to be you know um we're definitely in a much better place as trustee macarono mentioned um and he'll remember that when he handed the gavel over to me a year ago we were still um in a qualified budget you know we were still receiving those letters he was receiving the letters that I started receiving from Dr Dewan from the Santa Clara County Office of Education pretty much saying you know watch your budget your you know qualified and he received he's nodding because he remembers receiving those and when you receive those as a board president it's not just like another you know paper that you receive and you read I mean none of it is but those letters do something to you as a board president when you're receiving them um and the the responsibility that you know you feel and knowing that you know you kind of inherited that um and really you know didn't bring the district to that point but you just inherited um yeah I can't even explain what that feeling is but I know um and Chavez you also know what I mean and um you know I'm happy to report that I I became began you know governing as a president with those letters I received those letters and the last letter that I received was finally a positive so if you can if you can um and Chavez you can just imagine that you know receiving those letters and then receiving a positive like congratulations I mean it's one of those that I like wanna like put in my wall you know because it's not an award that we receive it's not a plaque but it should be you know considering everything we've been through as a district and so I just say that because I think we experienced some sort of Amnesia right like we forget those things that we've gone through difficult typical times um and as somebody mentioned I think it was Sharon who mentioned you know our district is continuously highlighted for the negative things and the negative and here's another negative it's almost like that's all we're looking for but I mentioned to that because that is a huge positive that we should all celebrate because we all were a part of that whether it was the teachers you know um as Jocelyn mentioned you know not getting a raise last year and yes that was a part of the decision making and yes it had to do with that um to you know and we all had a part in getting our budget into you know being a positive now so I mentioned that because um we get to remember that right and so just like we got into a positive we can easily put it back to a negative if we don't govern in the right way and make the right decisions so I know you know there's nothing easy coming our way you know I wish there was a wand and I wish it was like yes finally just because I had over the the gavel I continue to govern you know with as much Integrity responsibility as I've always have um so I know we still you know are in the thick of it you know we're writing those hard waves and storms but I know that we're gonna get through it um I look forward to you know coming to an agreement you know just like the teachers mentioned I look forward to that too um and you know for the best of everyone involved um and you know also other uh positives for this school year you know that I'd like to highlight um is that we open you know and and we didn't need to shut down any schools for any reasons our children our families our teachers are keeping our children safe wearing their masks um doing all that they can you know eating outside um hard decisions right but we're doing it and so congratulations to everybody you know um who who's been putting in their part um it's been a blessing as to an honor to serve the district you know I was able to finally visit all the schools not as thorough as trusty fam you know uh working full-time in the Emergency Operations Center having a teenager myself and putting um the focus in my home first my priority because there's no way that I can be saving the world or advocating for all you if I'm not doing it within my home so doing my best to balance all of that um but I was able to at least visit every school touch bases with the principals I look forward to going back um and then beginning our strategic planning you know almost completing that you know which again you know it's continuing to take our district to the next level to move it forward to push it um you know and and and come up with goals with our community entire community that are going to be best for our children um and and everybody that you know staff and families um and completing our governance book that we started almost two years ago right finally last you know meeting we were able to finish that having new partners as wejrano mentioned that want to invest in our district you know that want to invest I want to bring money and bring it and leave it here and add you know I'm very different than it was when uh you know when I came to this District as a parent um it was the opposite right the resources were being taken and so I mean that shift um I'm happy you know that we're here I'm happy that it is where where it's at um I know it might not seem like it it might not feel like it at times but I do want to highlight all of those things because that is exactly where we're at where we're at we get to celebrate um those accomplishments because they're huge and we get to continue to govern you know sometimes it's not easy um to make those tough decisions but to continue to push you know our district forward you know through this storm so that eventually we can you know enjoy the sunshine um and uh you know and and look back during these times and say you know we did that we were there and we pushed through so thank you all again um thank you board president for allowing me the time um and thank you for also governing along with me and um having my back when I couldn't be there as for vice president to support um and thank you to the rest of the board also for continuing to govern um with me during these tough times well remember chocolates okay I'm gonna make this short and sweet I just wanted to say to the teachers and the staff um that you're caring your thoughtfulness and educating the Alum Rock students is appreciated and I've heard from parents and students and how they appreciate the teachers and all the people that work together to try and get the education to the students and and are successful and sometimes not always successful but um we're working on it and everything is a work in progress and everybody is valued everybody doesn't always recognize it but I just want you to know um and say thank you that's all right um I uh wanted to thank uh board president former board president for her service to Moroccan leaning through some tough times and you know along the way also uh remember I don't know who also was there during some very very difficult uh times when we started having to adjust to to a new reality that none of us had faced in our lifetimes probably hadn't read about it before um and uh very much appreciate your service during that time in addition thank you to all our teachers um to our classified staff to um the teachers who are out there maintaining the facilities are keeping them up and running um to our child insurance and service folks okay everybody who's doing their part to uh keep things moving moving ahead during these times of uncertainty you are very much appreciated the work that you do is is invaluable and I want to thank you for that I understand that there are negotiations times are tough during during negotiations and obviously I'm as I've stated before I don't negotiate in public I don't think it's right um I you know I I know that your your uh your uh bargaining team would also agree with that that negotiating program is not appropriate um and so therefore I won't but I I do want to as one board member uh state that my position has always been that Administration needs to bring forward the best uh and the most um the mostly we can provide while still staying fiscally solvent and that's been my my position as one board member in my my direction as one board member um obviously the the board has to act as a as a majority um but that's always been the case and I and um I'm confident that uh Alan Rock's besties are ahead of us and that we will come to a resolution that is that that allows us to move forward that is fair that allows us to continue uh moving the district forward so um I wanted to thank the I know that board member Pam alluded to this but uh we had a opportunity to speak on behalf of the the municipal Broadband now that the county is moving forward thanks to the leadership of supervisor Chavez and supervisor allenberg who brought forward this idea of uh something that we've constantly been been perfect to are we actually been able to observe it in our board meetings for one of our board members is constantly having issues with Wi-Fi with internet connections and as a result of of those issues that are not isolated to the neighborhood where or one of our one of our colleagues resides in there are Pockets out there that don't have uh enough investment in our community and so therefore the counties taken upon itself to explore these opportunities that new legislation has brought forward uh to beginning Municipal Broadband operation that will allow the county to install that last mile of cable to give really fast internet uh speeds or provide the service itself and so I'm very excited for what the future holds for for those areas that were without um some people might think uh Broadband is a luxury it's not no longer a luxury it's necessary in order to be able to access health care in order to be accessed possibly access to food in certain instances all that information uh is now primarily being put out through through uh through the internet and therefore yeah it's now a necessity conducting government business uh sometimes requires you to have access to the internet in order to get it done quicker or to get it done at all so um very appreciative of evolution that they've taken to move forward on that um at this point um I'll go ahead and move on to um uh item 4.01 the approval of the proposed meeting calendar for uh um we have the proposed me calendar before us uh Dr Bauer are there any changes or anything that came up as a result of since the posting thank you board president uh the staff is respectfully requesting the board to move the January board meeting regular board meeting to January 20th there are some years where the holidays are too close to them to the regular board meeting and it doesn't allow staff enough time to process the appropriate backup to the agenda so if you are okay that's that's one of those um requests we have um I believe there was another request in July um because we have back to back recall we need two meetings in June and I'm going over the the calendar right now for July July 14th yes because there is that week of July the 4th and people take off and things like that so and we just finished with the board in that that El Cap meeting at the end of June so between June and July remember the July meeting is where we have all those major contracts that we bring to the board that it's a lot of them right and so to prep for the backup is so that's that's what the the the staff is asking respectfully if we can move it to um the 21st July 21st all right so those are two January 20th July 21st or the proposed changes um any uh comments I'd like to make a motion to approve it with uh the January 20th and July 21st uh edits yeah a motion there's a second second uh second by board member um further comments from the board seeing none that I'll go to comments for the public so are there any comments for the public at this time we have no public comments all right uh see if there's no public comments we'll go ahead and uh I'll there's a motion and a second on the floor already uh if there's no further comment from members of the board then we will go ahead and call for a vote uh Boardman Travis oh you just put your hand down all right um hi uh vice president aye uh board uh board member at Illinois hi yeah with myself avoiding I uh proven honestly um all right moving on to item 4.02 45 superintendents contract for the period of July 1st 201 through June 30th 2025 um is there oh um uh I just moved to uh ratify superintendent's contract for uh the period July 1st 201 through July 30th 2025 all right is there a second a second all right uh the motion has been uh made by board members seconded by foreign so do we have a comments from members of the public or president at this time we have no public comment all right uh moving on uh we'll go ahead and call for the there's no further comments from members of the board I'll call for the vote uh board member Chavez no excuse me no wait wait you said hi so I'm gonna take that person I was trying to suppress a cop so it's a no and I'm even gonna say no again all right so um [Music] uh got me thinking now I uh we're more fun I board member aye myself putting eye uh the motion passes at four uh to one uh uh with Chavez descent all right um item 4.03 discussion consideration to approve resolution uh 19 21 22.
as russell has it and east is really picking up the defensive pressure as they need to do so here quickly maybe get a couple turnovers here if they want to cut into this lead the bulldogs do a good job at breaking the press gets it down low inside shot is no good messiah trap with the steal two on three fast break goose inside three point shots on its way big shot and leaves it short could have been huge for the o's as brown throws it away goose with the steal she's all by herself on three bulldogs and she draws a foul will put her at the line shooting two took a big time fall there hopefully she is all right 127 remaining here chance to cut it it's a single digits here as goose couldn't get that one to fall needed that one she has one more as the second one's no good and we're gonna have a a foul called on messiah trap messiah trap picks up her fourth foul east fans iffy on the call but with that we'll put olivia johnson at the line for the 1-1 and no good craig with the rebound come up on 120 here fires up the three no good and a foul is called will put russell at the line for the one-on-one i think that gives the bulldogs the double bonus here with 114 so the bulldogs will get to shoot two free throws the rest of the way as russell's first one is good makes the lead 11.
at least that was their initial impression yeah that's their hands down i think that's accurate yeah so look at it look at the horns i want to pop up on b3 because only because i'm three feet for whatever reason i wonder if they're missing information all one got basically a 22-23 t without hitting any much at all of them so i'm not saying it can't be a crop up somewhere and you know yeah i mean basically with the point you know with their plan you know it's it's representative and again we're going to do more intense economy as soon as we um yeah with regards to the with regard to access in the back just i'm just gonna put in one plug here so uh if we do end up having a road back there or even if it's just for construction and the trees are cut down and stuff uh sidewalk access back through there um yes sorry i was not clear i'll show you yeah yeah um because i realized that uh vehicles would be a concern for the residents and stuff i don't know who's in charge that anyways that's the council i'm assuming that's actually making any decisions compared to what in terms of access in the back of norton if that's not is that a council or border bed decision whether or not we're allowed to access that space yeah i mean there's a right of way there it's town property okay so i think if we move forward that we would want to do that the evaluation of whether or not that is utilized would also like fall on the council on buildings okay based on a recommended they would listen to our recommendation they could sure okay okay um thank you uh a couple other points with regard to um staying on norton there's a culvert the borderline culvert running all the way around the back there so what happens with that just in a typical situation not necessarily what happens in northern but i mean do you put like a steel plate over it to allow the copper to stay you backfill it are you talking with that access if we're using now take the access out just a general question that whole culvert right there yeah and it runs along the north property line is that the one you're talking about there's something there is a culvert so you've got you have um north east parcel that's woods yes and that's where i think you're really talking about putting a building in at least a bigger portion of it yeah it's kind of split between the fields and that yeah okay there's a culvert that runs across the northern the eastern and the southern border of that yeah it's like a drainage goes all the way around yeah we probably won't i don't suspect that we'll even take some of that's not even on the property it's on the adjacent land on this property okay it's close to the border yeah it's close yeah so we can't technically go across by law and go across the property line with that unless no no no no i understand that so but it will be taken into account into the design as us mentioned it earlier when they're doing the full site development that may come to play i think ideally in this case we want to leave probably as much vegetation as possible between the neighbors and the dollars i i suspect we'll try to cite this thing more to the central part of that portion if not maybe shade to the left a little bit where it's already open okay um ideally we want we want at least some vegetation there i mean it's a pretty big site when you look at a map that's bigger than what it seems what's when you say cold is it like a box cover like concrete there's nothing in it like that i think it's basically drainage for the properties there but it literally i mean there's points where i think it's like a four or five foot drop i mean yeah yeah it might be not equipped but it's steep it ultimately goes out to the north west corner then there's a culvert that goes up from there [Music] our development is to that okay and we have to mitigate a little counter slope and keep it onto our parcel in some way shape or form we wouldn't drain everything into that if it increased the flow going through that because i'll look at the existing site go how much water is going to that and where's it coming from so the drainage drainage actually wasn't my conservative conservative safety for kids who are walking around over there and right now they're not doing it because it's woods and then all of a sudden they're within you know yeah now whatever you want to put a fence you know around the playground that's another discussion right now that's a safety discussion for the the the the project itself but you know ssic and all that but for getting access to it that's a discussion of the design piece up here so where does the with regard to the casper channel property the the water flow from rain what what's a likely scenario for that is it literally you're just putting in a drainage pipe to bring it down to the river there so um like right through the field or well there's a lot of different um options possible solutions okay it generally goes from west to east i believe we're looking at our yeah our topography so again what they you know depending on okay where we cite the building where our circulation for you know parking and traffic goes to um i i would again suspect that um we'll probably have um there's usually a gross particle separator that takes out a lot of your sediments from a water quality storm and then it might go into we've seen many projects where it goes into detention basis so it goes in some of the seasons of the ground there will be an overflow and like a really high you know really large storm you know test storm um but again whatever is going to there now we cannot increase that in post development they go pre pre-development post-development free most of them has got to be a net zero they need to reduce it very sensitive area guarantee when we go to play in the zoning early discussions that's probably going to be an early one going what are some of the measures we're going to be taking you know to do that there's a lot of best practices to mitigate that um the 10-mile river is right there let's go straight down to it yeah we can't just go run a pipe and go here again it'll it'll be catastrophic to that to that um of course so this could be a scenario in which i see these basically like empty ponds that have some large gravel at the bottom of them so they're definitely amazing that's just one that you see a lot on the roads um there are underground storm you know um solutions that are more expensive sometimes you might get multiple swells you might have rain gardens lot of really creative ideas you can use creative landscaping um you know but also you don't want to have these attractive nuisances for mosquitoes at the same time we've had problems with those we're like okay staining water um and that's why you put the fountain in it right to aerate let's keep the mosquitoes up what's that do you put fountains in them maybe i i i i don't design those but i i would face one working with other districts previously uh i think you want to try to stay away from those as much as possible especially like right near the building maybe it's back not so you know not so bad but uh there's a lot of a lot of solutions out there continually evolving thank you so much my last my last point um the top soil i think there's two points on this wrenching as being the low point load bearing so i'm just trying to envision this because what i have in my mind is this building that i have is the school gonna have a basement typically they don't know we don't build basins in most of the schools like you're like your old ones have boiler rooms that are like hard to get down to get into and get into boilers now they're usually the bottom floor you'll have you know double open doors and your portals are so small now i mean they're they're like four foot by four foot maybe they're so efficient for these buildings um they're they're very great the mechanics we don't typically do basements um so there was there would be a basement though in terms of this being on a hill you're going to be thinking you know yeah like the marion road would be accurate one story that the building would slow down the problem with that is is you know you put your mechanicals there you don't want to put classrooms because you want natural light yeah um but they're that you may have you know a partial retaining wall where there's parking along there so instead you have parking then it comes to the building so you're instead of having it in the building you're having parking instead and maybe you know i don't know what the green plants are today you might have parking lot then the building so that you get everything great has natural lighting you know good [Music] these design professionals you know you saw blue glimpse with microphyllon um they're very creative um their teams come up with great solutions um all these things we're talking about they're responsible for for proposing solutions that communicate those and i think that's my last point you mentioned that since it's a farm there's likelihood of uh pesticides in the top 12 inches of soil um then you mentioned just bringing in phil to cover it up yeah so what we what we do yeah we want to manage it on site what we did in some other projects is depending on what some of these levels are from the sampling um if they're under the criteria you can use them to plant grass and you use them to you know your top seeding you have to have to amend them these are probably going to be really exposed from grass obviously but they do exceed these um some of the mitigation strategies are you've seen birming on some sites um where you know we may push them to maybe one edge of the site and then we have to cut one project we have covering with 18 inches of clean just soil and then six inches of you know clean top soil so that we don't get access to it and we know where it's at on the map we know on the gravy plane hey this this mountain has x amount we have to we have to kind of calculate but we want to know that earlier the design team can you know properly okay um when they look at their grading plans and lay out the site and the mapping so we until we have that is there anything else for the two school sites that we should be requesting of the town council to allocate money for the upfront plan planning yeah so we're gonna be obviously we're going to be requesting a proposal from um slam because the demographer that was with slr their old demography group is pretty much left their expertise there's three or four of them um that doesn't sound very good mike zuma who was leading that group is the slang collaborative um architectural firm he's still doing it and we certainly we certainly recommend staying with them because of the level of expertise he brings that's what we're going to be getting a proposal for that we mentioned the base two environmental assessments um uh for those as well part of the the demographer is really fine-tuning some of the you know the proposed redistricting and fine-tuning those numbers uh they really get into where's the streets where's the bus lines there's gonna be a it's a long discussion you know for that um for it i'm trying to use anything else or traffic where's our animation i think everything we've mentioned so far i think is going to cover we typically do a pre-referendum application to do our due diligence um we're not we'll we're demolishing it if we do norton that's a full abate and demolish we have square footage costs for that that we're pretty comfortable you know incorporating into the budget to accommodate that um if we were renovating we would want to get them in and have a look at that then do we have a limited housing supporting material inventory and we're in school for past projects i didn't even have a limited hazardous building in jail inventory for northern school that's the project that you've done internally or you might have a hero reports for like asbestos i mean we have that we have yeah eventually required to keep that um i'm not sure if we have anything else on file i mean good luck based upon the errors like we just got bits you know they're we're looking we usually pledge anywhere from twenty twenty five dollars a square foot for a demo you know in that range and uh we would certainly recommend the design phase bringing in um uh you know environmental consultant you know for hazmat to come in uh use do sampling um we have to strategize on that it's another whole other discussion is you know what you simple when you assume like pcbs and so forth there's a lot of strategies for fitting and taking care of that yeah i mean over the years we've mitigated most of the asbestos you know certainly and there was tons of it more unlike all the schools that were built in the 50s and 60s yeah these areas are pretty you know most of the windows have been done at that though yeah the windows had those type of that you know even those exterior panels had asbestos those have been abated so i'm i'm hoping that it's not going to be anything onerous that we find there so thanks andrew so you mentioned um adders in terms of cost so chuck you know my concern sustainable construction um most i do believe that would be a matter in terms of the capital cost i personally think that over the life cycle it would have to pay back on it um did you my understanding was you were going to have a sit down a normal monthly sit down or something like that with you with you with tim slocum sean kimball maybe today or yesterday yes and rich was going to be there richard berry you didn't get there did anybody from the energy commission get there there was nobody okay i thought something was going to be there um okay so that's my concern but i know we you know we also talked about as we get towards the planning phase where we actually know what we're building that would be you know critical component then i don't know when there's a simple so here's my simple concern is that the discussion about that i believe that it should happen before we decide on a referendum number because if we go to referendum and there's not funding in it at that time then after the referendum well we can't do that tim because there was no funding i'm a believer that that should be a conscious decision before the vote is taken to send it out and if it's not in there if there's no funding available in there so be it i'm just one person sitting here yeah but i do believe that it needs to be a conscious decision on the part of everybody yeah in terms of uh phases right now the next phase would be in this group would planning committee would meet again hopefully in january to discuss you know adopting or recommending this plan in terms of the two sites at that point if let's say that the planning committee moves that forward to the full board in january we would as a board vote to a doctor not adopt that claim not the dollars the the plan um the council would then take that up in the vote you know to move that plan forward or not by june we would have to submit things like ed specs in our meeting yesterday what we discussed was that chuck and john their team would design a timeline for you know what do we have to do if we're trying to i mean if we're obviously trying to submit the application because that drives reimbursement by the end of june what other steps have to fall in place and i think you know these guys are working on that after the holidays we should have that time frame to better understand when did dollars get assigned when do we have to figure that out so that you know at least that can be part of the conversation because i do agree with you in the sense that we need to to look at that um you know environmentally and for the efficiency of the building and the cost we do need to look at it i i don't know because this isn't this is my first rodeo no what the timeline for that is but we're working on developing the timeline plan that i think should help that am i wrong guys you're spot on i mean that what you're talking about and just clarify so every project goes through it's connected to high performance building that's equivalent to lead silver so that that's a must that's a baseline minimum that's required by oscgi yes that's state law so that's a baseline minimum i think it's part of the energy code now too like i think if i understand it maybe adopted this which is like 21 more efficient um that's a minimum baseline a lot of the additional options i'll say because you go further obviously next zero is the hot one right now we're doing school in mansfield um that's i think one of the first ones that one actually came into the budget um but geothermal obviously is you know um a big consideration um photovoltaics and how we you know what we do there and then there's other ones as well and that's part of those the minimum baseline okay higher performance again one thing we don't do is get a nice plot from the building console same person right so that that's at the minimum um so i i appreciate that i just need to be clear about this there's a moment in time when hands go in the air for the board of ed and that's my point is that i want to know how that fits into the equation before we're going on it but yeah we'll be talking that timeline but to be clear we're voting on not a budget so when so what well doctors was just laying out about the planning committee recommended to the full board full board and making a recommendation to the town council that's not we're not talking about dollars and cents yet i once we this body you should say moves a project forward to the council does it ever come back to the board again to vote on like the design of the school or the money being spent or anything like that in your experience probably absolutely you know i think that discussion comes into um when you establish your building committee do you have more liaison you know but let's say we want to do it at zero school so when would that decision be made do we get to make that decision or is that right because that's what we're going to be giving to the design team and going this is what you have to design too rfp and that but we need to know that but what you're saying is absolutely correct we need to know before we finalize the budget right typically we'll review the budget when we do the specs just so you as a quarterback can go okay yes we've seen the budget it sounds like the town council ultimately approves it but that number's got to be into there because that's what they're going to put forth for rough run that's that's going to be really the bottom line number um you know pretty much at that point now when we do the referendum i think the spring result of 2022 um and um the the requirements are so you know so the requirements if if you submit in june of um 2022 june 30th deadline by statute uh the statutes allow referendum towns to vote on the funding up until um november 15th you have to have you have to establish that you're going to count councils november 8th and all the datas um and report the results to the statement later that november 15th you can do that so we we have time to tweet you know says in the summer you can you know tweet that number a little bit um so i think it's an august state we would have to establish an income council was like the end of august in the timeline that you have to have that number in the explanatory text and then your body counts as so i don't know exactly how energy fits into expect but i'll say this i'll say this energy relates directly to the environment and public health and as a member of the board of vets for the last two years the number one topic that we have discussed in my opinion is not education it has been public health really yeah the air handling systems all this stuff the construction of new buildings it all wraps up into the same thing which is the best outcome for our kids and that includes all this stuff that's how i see it just so you know yeah so i think i feel like there is a way to put this stuff into pets but these new systems you have for kind of performance building the ones we've built have not had a problem with coping the new ones in south windsor dr carter you know i think you guys went looked at yeah those systems were fully capable of taking care of fresh air turnover they can man they have all the bells and whistles by default that's at a minimum they already have those in you don't have to like build those indigo and add additional dollars in order to deal with this pandemic though these new schools have they haven't had any problems there's been no no problem so it's the older ones where unit ventilators no fresh air systems um yeah it means to be fair the only way that it's translating it's not really translating into different cobot rates it's translating into things like they don't put up a tent we [Music] that makes more sense preparation is it relates to ed's specs i have limited experience with that from our you know project several years ago but i don't remember in that process at any point discussing hvac i mean i remember that you know we look at the programmatic offerings within the building yeah the services offered within that building the the grade levels service the the academic needs and identifying like we did recently with darcy what program you offered wasn't square footage required for that program that i mean pretty fundamental stuff not necessarily you know picking out carpet swatches and talking about you know no you don't get you don't get that deep into yeah so like when we talk about specs i mean i know that the board votes to adopt ed specs because that's directly related to the educational program i just don't want tim to be misled to think that oh well you know this will come back to the board to vote on something like that when i don't know that the process outlines that the actual systems we're not going to be picking actual said that's in design but if so if you say to us in order to do a net zero school it's going to be a four million dollar addition to each building or two whatever that is be to make sure that at least yeah i think it's hopeful who had his insight into it so it's part of the discussion yeah i hear what you're saying andrew kind of being like right so this is the silver you know the environmental to go to the next tier up of that would be an overlay and it's like almost like you're buying the car right you want the premium package that's going to cost you two thousand dollars you know or obviously that's not gonna throw money towards that community in the states there might be certain aspects of it that are not part of the reimbursement and look that theirs is building systems incorporated the new they'll be designed in accordance with the performance buildings equivalent to performance delete silver right so that's just a very generic performance requirement for it um they do get into heating hvac and cooling um i think some of this is you know um a little too but heat and cooling should be produced with natural gas with a boiler for heating and rooftop well that one you know that might be safe some sites have natural gas so we have it there i think we probably look at it and said we can um there we receive air conditioning uh not only those with summertime use a lot of the systems running around others will have dehumidification on your summer month to me that's a little bit too much to be honest but yeah it's a little bit more detail i i think you know just it's you know it should be more generic it's going to have updated hvac systems that meet connect to high performance buildings um that have you know filtration and these are a little a little bit uh um more detailed so is it possible do you think um to i don't know i'm just throwing it out there for january 20th is it possible to have based on that specs and the plans not the aspects but based on the plans that we have right now this was our dollar amount that we threw up for this plan at that silver rating yeah here's what you can envision based on the square footage to go to whatever level tim is talking about yeah that might be tough in all honesty because like i said we just did mansell elementary school and there's not a lot of net zero schools out there to take a sampling uh from that's part of the challenge we um we have one of our other colleagues worked on that project and we can pull him in and go hey what do we see um and um the numbers we've incorporated already that you've seen already are kind of high performance built right you know usually what we do is really the biggest thing is it's a budgetary thing so you enter budget and you look at all the line items we have lineups for k geothermal do you want to add in you know a line up for geotherm foldable tags we can put specific line items that we identified specifically values for those if the town collectively wants you know to do that it's more of a budgetary than it is more than anything else yeah can you just ask what percentage from going from the what's allowable by the state what portion of that is not reimbursable as part of the school of construction because the time needs to know it's a five million dollar addition to the project that five million dollars is five million dollars a hundred percent from your question correctly the state's not going to go okay because you want to go in that zero we're not going to pay for that they they have a cap right now standard is 365 dollars a square foot for the building itself not the site the building so five feet basically outside the building all ins they're using 365.
authorizing remote virtual teleconference meeting of the board and the district committee subject to the brown act for the period of December 18 2021 through January 17 2022. um uh I see Hands Up by former Chavez uh motion to approve uh but remember I don't know oh and I was going to motion but I'll second it to me in my estimation there's been no changes in the circumstances since the last month all right we have a motion and a second I'll go ahead and accept it for the purpose of discussion board member members do we have comments uh Mr President might we go to uh public comment first and then okay uh all right uh if there's no further comments from members of the board then we'll move on to uh public comments are there uh comments from the public no public comments at this time all right 159 then I'll come back to members of the board any comments from members of the public from the members of the board uh yes I'll say it uh you know this is a uh as as much as it you know uh you know I I've made my views known about uh you know my that that I always believed that public business should always be held in person but you know I I do want to um you know let it be known for lack of a better term that uh you know to to all our regrets that the circumstances have once again changed uh you know well uh it almost feels like you you know uh one version of the coronavirus uh recedes and then another one pops up so uh you know uh you know as much as I would like to see all of us back in person you know the uh the safety of the uh Community uh of this District's Community kind of comes first so you know one once again uh circumstances have you know have have made it so that uh this item is once again a necessity all right for the comments remember to the board see none then I'll go ahead and call for a vote I'll call you as a team what remember Chavez I Vice President Palmer I remember I with myself 49 motion passes unanimously all right um moving on China 4.04 approval to appoint the board representative for County committee election for 2022 um at this point I'll go ahead and um and call for a of those Desiring to serve as the the electors for that position uh to make themselves known uh board member uh yes I would be interested um in in this item uh aren't if there's no no one else um expressing interest and we'll go ahead and move forward with that with board member uh all right board member Chavez ordinarily how many of you have on a school board um the the this is the appointment to cast a vote so yeah my question is ordinarily how many do you have one or two uh when historically we've sent one person thank you go ahead and take care of it all right um so is there any further comments from members of the board yes yes uh uh uh a question to either Ward president or superintendent uh you know just just for my edification in the community's identification uh this the county committee on School District organization does would this have any bearing about uh uh the drawing of District boundaries yes they do they um are the body that decides whether or not somebody's in a particular District so it can get very contentious if somebody for example is in a very next to a very affluent district and they want to have their house changed over so their the value of their house can increase uh stuff of that sort uh but they also serve as a body that actually puts together the lines uh for the County Board of Education so the board itself um does not select its own lines it's the county committee on School District organization that actually puts them together I know this very well because I worked with them uh 10 years ago to come up with the boundaries that are in place now uh so basically uh you know given that the county has 32 districts and we are electing we are uh appointing one of our own to represent us so I take it that so each each district has one vote yeah exactly we're not putting somebody no no no so the county committee does the county committee gets one person per supervisorial District it's not um it's not like we're sending somebody over to vote at the county committee we send somebody to vote for that person who's eventually going to serve oh okay okay so representative democracy oh so we're like an electoral so basically we're we're appointing one of our own to the Electoral College uh you know I kind of uncomfortable with the comparison myself but yeah yeah you're right it is accurate well on that note then I am fully in support of uh knowing trustee Bay harano's work on his his board and his uh very thorough uh thorough mannerisms I'm very confident that trustee Bay harana will represent as well on the county committee on uh was it on the uh oh was it uh on on the as our delegate to vote for members of the county committee on School District organization you're on mute yeah all right remember I'll just uh if that was a motion uh trusty fam I'll second that yeah so motion that's emotion emotions to motion to appoint Ernesto Bay Verano as our delegate to uh you know uh as a delegate in the election for members of the county committee on School District organization we have a motion from work from the second from board member uh any further comments from members of the board the only question I had um and I don't know if it could be answered because I don't know if we have legal counsel with this or maybe president you might have the answer but because the um some of the action here potentially would happen in late October or early November and it doesn't give any more specificity as to that November date um I I just wonder if the election coming up how that could potentially impact the selector whoever it were whoever were to be selected from any District um if that individual is no longer there at the time where I'm not sure if they make sure to do it prior to any changes in um in Representatives based on election results so um again I don't know if we have the answer I don't have the answer that and I would assume that we can reach out to Dr Bauer can reach out to the county superintendent who basically serves and has staff that staffs the county committee and they'd be able to provide us a thorough response in writing um okay so if that's uh that's okay with you it won't proceed in that manner uh we have come or hands uh that are raised by board member uh I'm not sure who had their handout first Travis okay so wouldn't the organizational meeting of next year's December uh decide that as well to uh I meant to me I think I think I'm adding to trustee bejarano's question that that organization is after the actions already taken place I think I think the the person would serve through that time though early November I believe that's my understanding too I think trustee Chavez may may make a good valid point here all right God remember uh the only thing I'll add is um should we add um a secondary person in case that happened to cover that we have um agenda is this uh select one of its members to vote as the law in the edge in the ad code requires it so at this point let's go ahead and have um Dr Bauer reach out to the county superintendent to give us more instruction more Direction and clarify the questions and we would have uh complied with with the law by taking action at this meeting the way we have foreign yeah I was going to ask if the language could be added and or alternate for because we're changing the language that's not possible that's my question the the item's been agendized as select one of its members so if I'm sure that there's a provision already in place and we'll get the response from families of Virginia and just for clarity the the request coming from The Office of Education it only indicates um to select a board member so it doesn't doesn't give any indication about a secondary or backup or anything so I think yes I think we should just wait if there's a response that Deans further action that we need to do something different then we can do it at that time all right um any further comments from members of the board uh boardmanship is so are we just gonna make the motion and vote on it today and should it be changed we'll just change it later is that what we're doing yeah usually Miss Carrick who is the one who's chaps um the uh the county committee we'll go ahead and reach out to boards and let you know if there's changes or is there any actions you have to take and she's pretty good about that of notifying you hey there's been some changes or something you have to do this to complete compliance with water yeah and just to add on to your statement it's the letter that we received says that we have um until February of 22 um to submit our certificate of who we're selecting I guess so we have some time to clarify yeah all right so there's a motion on the floor there's a second um see no further comments members of the board we've called for public comment already as and so we didn't have any so we will go ahead and move on with the board as I see you board member Chavez I remember behano hi board member from I remember uh hi myself 49th motion passes you know all right um before we go to a far away from the agenda I one of my staff members uh made the comment in the notice that during the item 403 uh we're going to have to extend that to January 20th instead of the 17th and the um the board is able to do that as you know going back to and to amend the previous um item to be able to cover the change of the board meeting to January 20th because this virtual only have you know covers till January um 17.
and the second one is good for russell big time free throws there for maggie russell and the bulldogs gets it down inside to trap craig has it under a minutes to go here good steal by preston and she's going to pull it out good decision there by elise preston to kill some more time as we're up on 50 seconds here and brown gets inside jump stop floaters no good rebounded by goose and she looks to attack on the right side greg has it hesitation floater falls for the o's back to a 10-point ball game time-out taken by the olympians with 32.2 seconds remaining here and we will take a 60-second break um good job by both teams and their cheerleading squads as they did a good job keeping the crowd going all night long as the varsity team would look to do the same with the next match to follow we north basketball after the full timeout taken by the olympians 32.2 seconds remaining here i wonder if east is electing a foul here to maybe stop the clock and they're gonna not they will foul will put russell back at the line i believe she gets to shoot sue as they are in the double bonus as the first one is no good 28.3 seconds remaining here and the second one short and it bounces around off a few fingertips and falls on the hands of russell and that's a heart breaker if you're an olympian fan and stolen by goose and hits it out of bounds 15.7 seconds here and that might do it here for the jv contest here at columbus north high school [Music] come up on five seconds here and that shall do it's here for the jv game congratulations to the columbus north girls jv team and our score ends up 38-28 stick around we have varsity matchups to follow and thank you guys for tuning in and allowing us to be a part of your evening and also a big shout out to our sponsor forced construction for sponsoring this live stream here tonight so thank you guys once again for tuning in i will turn it over to the crew here for the varsity matchup and stick around for some more girls basketball thank you [Applause] uh [Music] [Applause] can i turn it off [Music] [Applause] [Music] now [Music] now oh [Music] ah uh [Music] wow [Music] wow [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] oh [Music] uh blow that up a little bit so i can actually see their names good evening from memorial gym in columbus indiana hosts columbus north high school for the first time that we've been together here in this gym for a girls contest for a couple years it's good to be hosting a big event here at columbus north and good to have stands full of fans i'm brett bozeman joined by nick williams and dr jim roberts nick it's happy to happy to have you here next to me again uh we've done this with football and this will be our first basketball go around so welcome nick and tell tell me a little bit about what you expect to see tonight all right again like brett said it is great to be back in memorial gym watching the girls they weren't able to play last year like brett said so it is good to see the crowd the atmosphere some of these girls haven't been in this type of atmosphere ever really so they have the trophy on the check-in box so everybody's gonna walk past that and see it but we have two very talented teams tonight and we're looking for a great matchup east comes in tonight at a 10-2 record coach danny brown is in his 19th season uh and they get up and down the court they'll press they'll trap in the half court and they are averaging uh almost 64 points per game while only giving up 47.
now today's market is that we could number hard to say because we're all seeing what's going on with the material prices so that but we've been we've been using that number uh for that so that's a very dynamic um situation but if you say we're gonna do that zero we can do it within the budget it's all good it's gonna be reimbursable if they put you on a priority list it's reversible if you're in that number the bigger center we are it's the spaceman you know we're going above the space standard but they don't look at some point we're looking at the different gradations of of being energy efficient sure but i don't remember where that came in so this is yeah this one i brought up this is when we were looking at the middle school project this was a tsk page so what they did is they put together a budget and you could see as the net estimated cost was 71.1 million and then what they presented is okay here's the incremental cost on top of the budget if you want to do geothermal is 1.8 million 11.6 years is the payback photovoltaic 276 thousand twenty five years so you know you could take this kind of approach which i'm sure we would adding that zero or whatever other factors or types of energy efficient um measures we wanna take and and add that and i think your point is we're staying reimburses 365 a foot times the size of the building if you fit that into the project then there's really no net additional cost to do any of those any energy efficiency um my question has nothing to do with energy as far as i'm concerned this is a luxury item unless we can justify a payback to it i don't think it's realistic um that being said um all i want to know from this initial conversation is is this land buildable and can it sustain two schools each of the two individuals yeah the two individual parcels yeah from what we're seeing in our on our initial studies yes okay there's all the other shows these are real pieces of land that can hold real buildings that we are looking at it says geothermal payback 11.6 years what is that that we're looking at right there tskp put this together they were the design firm that did the proposal for the middle school oh the four years ago yeah yeah okay all right yeah i mean uh my gut is that most people would support you know 10 or 12 year payback on something i don't know that everybody worked but that's probably that probably has changed over time and sure fuel rates change and stuff yeah it's it's uh it's not an exact science i think those and you might get different opinions from different firms too sure all right so moving on so we have the preschool program after that who's trying to well i have i'll leave it off and then you know maybe um colliers and and jeff could kind of wrap it up so there's a schematic of highland school and so i just have it up on the on the board here so what i did want to kind of explain what the exercise that we took was what can we fit at highland school after we districted if you look back at the school monetization committee's recommendation after you built a new chapman and a new north and you redistrict thailand would have to fit 780 total students that includes k-6 plus the 105 students coming from pre-k darcy okay so the total number 780 but we need room for 675 k through 6 students so the exercise that we did is we took the existing footprint of highland and then working together as a team including scott jeffrey the principal at highland we laid out all the rooms to fit 675 students and so there's some color coding so kindergarten you have four four kindergarten classes one two three four that's the orange color first grade there's five classrooms needed again based on the enrollment projections at their peak which was actually in the last year of the enrollment study and so on through the grade so what highland has in this schematic is 37 general education classrooms okay cakes are six plus they have seven special education classrooms now the big difference is a general ed classroom is gonna have about 18 students per class special ed classrooms are about eight okay so you need more room for those students just because of the specific needs that they have so after completing that exercise what we backed into is what's remaining at highland school after you fill it up with tasty way and the answer is four rooms which we picked these four because this is currently the kindergarten wing but you see that there's two classrooms in the kindergarten way that are needed for kindergarten so this is roughly generously 5 000 square feet if you then look at the second document which we provided which is the expects that we work together to build with the consultant and hanson and i'm going to ask you to just go to the last two pages and i can bring it up here actually so this is the space summary based on looking at what is it we need to accommodate 105 um pre-k students plus the birth to three program and you can see that in alberta iii the child resource center is about 1100 square feet birth to three offices small 300 square feet for the pre-k program you need four classrooms at 1100 square feet and so on and so the total space now this could be tweaked but initial cut says we need about 15 200 square feet to properly accommodate first degree and the pre-k programs that we currently have at target and so right now you cannot fit 15 000 square feet in the existing island because you've only got about 5000 right so then the question becomes what are the options and i'll kind of you know open it up to chuck and john and jeff because i know we've had some additional discussion at the steering committee as well yesterday well i mean basically when you look at this here relative to the space available at highland you know the program for darcy is 10 000 square feet in excess of what's available so your options are you know to build on 10 000 square feet at home structurally we can't build up so that means we'll build enough if you've been to highlands you know at any point but certainly recently we have people parking on the grass that highlands right now we have substantial traffic problems that happened already even when you siphon off a significant number of kids as part of redistricting we're adding on net vehicles because of the nature of the program that's run at darcy school there will be more vehicles added than what we remove when we remove certain costs and bus the busing will increase the neighbors are already not huge fans um i just you know as we talked yesterday the sensation was that you could shoehorn potentially the some of the projects into the building and build on additional space to accommodate the other but the logistical cost regardless of what the financial cost was would be overwhelming you would just be creating many more problems than you saw alternatively we could incorporate the programming into a new construction on the north end of town but i think the thinking was that it's important for us to identify in rough numbers what the cost would be to add it add the program onto highlight because it's important to know that but also you know what would the cost be to incorporate the program to the northland school in that case it does allow us to close nursing school which is in need of significant repair and just cost avoidance there will be significant i mean i just from touring to rc school and listening to the both the teachers and the principal there the first three programs the stephen august really mentions that our two like flagship programs of district offers i just think that we would be going through all this into schumann was programmed to buy high school i think would be the other taxes on our card so you have to have trained pills what's the approximate square feet of the proposed new chapter i'll bring it up so what would that mean in terms of her percentage increase to the size of the existing proposal part of that question we're here part of that um part of that consideration though is that if if we realized that we could squeeze some additional space out around to the tumor classroom would that therefore adjust our redistricting so that not as many students would go to that non-attending school in that event would that mean less square footage on that building probably to a certain extent i wouldn't say 5 000 but some and so part of what we're doing right now is soliciting slr for all the materials the raw materials that they develop the data from their enrollment projections and then we will solicit slam the uh the firm that is now doing that sort of work because that's a large dependent on that business to determine how much can we do that but trump you have the square footage on them yes so at a minimum um utilizing the reimbursement or the um space standard calculation you know that we've talked about multiple times and and i think you you you guys have heard it many many times that's taking the enrollment times a certain you know square foot per student um minimum we're looking about 88 000 square feet 80 90 000 square feet up to potentially and um you know just shy of 100 000 square feet for not including creek not including the pre-k program and that all the that is all driven up those variables taken about what are we doing for the ad specs because of the space hungry programs um that is just really again i want to just stress because if we're videotaping some people watching the space center is a reimbursement calculation it's a reimbursement calculation but it's an indicator of what what size should this be so anywhere from basically 90 to 100 000 are varied around numbers is probably what you're looking at right now that's awesome yeah so you're adding potentially 15 yep um um all right so the uh is there a is the reimbursement rate different for um these uh pre-k um or special education programs just that i know that the state was interested in yeah it's a good question we talked about that promoting is there a reason why it's the north the north school the new chapman school is a preferred site versus the norton school site yeah because of the just the block property the size so if we you know we are fitting the norton school the revised norton into the back end of the morning to add another 15 000 square feet to that building if you remember some of the drawings that were proposed there's really not space to do another 15 000 square feet there certainly we have much more property enough to you know propose a middle school out there six through eight so we have enough to accommodate the additional 15 000 i did you said 15 000 square feet is the pre-k and birth to three it's every program that's currently how is the person for those that do those make up things well we have birth to three we have special ed pre-k we have smart start we have uh well smart stuff pre-k that was my understanding smart start is pre-k it's a different program so here's here's my question is there i presume there's a benefit is there a need to keep pre-k and birth to three together yeah that's a great question and so the answer to that was yes because every time that i've spoken to the darcy staff and i will admit to that being an early education specialist when i talk to all those who are they say the real you know value in darcy is the synergy that's gleaned from having those specialists and seeing that continuation of support some of these students have the most significant needs in our school system and so to have that continuation of support from birth to three through pre-k into the uh school is really invaluable and that's supports benefit because i mean the teacher could literally be in mourning at jarvis marion and then the morning or an afternoon in highland they could do that but you're saying that that's not something that would work really significantly they could do it but it wouldn't work i don't even know how you understand yes i do okay yeah marlene was just saying the same thing down here that when you're there are different resources in the classroom for that sort of program so to do half day year half day there you're doubling the need for those resources so i mean it's a fair question i mean that also came up yesterday okay um and that's that was my response then too okay sam and if you brought it up but um i'm just thinking about the president's uh pre-pay for all the initiative i know it may not impact us as much so if it's highly focused on low income and moderate income but or do we have somewhat of a projection that once that initiative goes into practice and where we stand with enrollment side you know sure i'm not sure that that suggestion the recommendation for that because it's not law it's not you know this is just a recommendation or a proposal my understanding was within that proposal that pre-k access not only meant publicly private access too so you know well because i think it'd be unlikely that every school system in america or even schools and hiring in the area could find the square footage or build new buildings to accommodate that requirement so i thought that it also incorporated just folks gaining certifications and things to work in a private environment so we would probably have to fall back on that too because i don't really put square footage what exactly do we have to do now is we have to go back and look at that north end school and say because i always thought that we were i know we were talking about this option but i haven't always in the back of my mind um the game plan was to play the darcy yeah darcy progress up yeah you know you're just ahead of your time because the the group the group was thinking you know like is this is this an option uh highland thing is it an option is it cost effective is it logistically effective and at least at first glance the answer seems to be pretty clear though right um and so i think you know so we're just it's an exercise to just close that option just to make sure you know we did not leave i mean we could do less conditioning for thailand that's that's part of what we would evaluate right with slam yeah is this just you know i'm super partial to these programs whatever you guys [Music] yeah i always say that the program itself is befitting you know resources and a facility that matches the quality of the work that's done there and right now they're about the scale way out of them right sorry you haven't done it oh no i i to say as the representative of darcy's school i have uh toured rca i think three or four times um and yeah that's the one thing that they always stress is the continuity of the program that the the kids who who use that program it's important not only to have all the resources there but to have them with a lot of the needs that they have to have that familiarity with the location as well as as they progress through the program that they think that that adjustment part can kind of be taken off the table uh so that they can achieve that development that that the program is really um trying to achieve so to i think to have those programs in one location is probably better for the program and i think probably the north end sounds like the best place for the arts yeah so we're just finalizing that i think with slr what that would look like and then you know we have to look at the dollars that if we were to try and do something at home one of the points that uh shuffling drowning days have passed is the fact that with the space being added on finally the parking lot will likely have to be significantly reconfigured and many times when you do that you have to bring all the lock the water runoff everything up to the current standard which would be a dramatic impact on cost too not to mention the fact that we just really don't have a lot of parking lot space there to maneuver anywhere um let alone some of it up and try and snake the parking lot around the back of the building further so but we will look at the costs there it looks like it's also just it's just going to look like urban sprawl right now it doesn't make any sense yeah when we we did our our analysis on this with the smc you know we didn't we weren't using this picture when we're analyzing we're purely looking at a calculation of the spreadsheet and what what this does this is real this really shows that there's really not a whole lot of room in there you know um you know because the space standard for 780 was about 96 000 square feet and this building is 106 so by the numbers you should fit right you know when you look at the calculation but we look at this in a real plan view every building obviously is unique the the the classroom widths are unique and those all all your white spaces are pretty much supports you know administrative or support you know back of house custodial bathrooms corridors that's where we look at this and go oh it really can't fit right and the picture's worth a thousand words so that's what we didn't do during smc is this exercise here now as we revolve it and go through iterations now we're fine-tuning going okay never seen a clear picture and this is what the state would look at as well and going okay what does your building really look like and we show them this they go where are you going to put it at i guarantee that probably i mean we've talked about the cafeteria under size of the building as it is so introducing a whole nother what's the first one trade take place there nines will be in the corner yeah we've had lunch as the kids walk in we'd have to give them lunch anything outside of school conversation youtube baby oh okay um so with uh that being said about the um special education at darcy um what are we going to do about the hummuston part since we were going to use space or the thought was there was going to be space used at the uh the north side to to sort of help with the hummus building is that as my understanding there's at least some money in the budget to account for that but as like a phase 1a or whatever um does that mean that still there will be little tougher just as the project goes along we'll have to consider some alternate solutions for that i mean the way i understand is replace all their value for hummus in school somewhere or the programs within schools somewhere but not necessarily right and uh we've met with the esteemed economic development coordinator and um are looking at some alternatives um and even you know chuck mentioned at one of the town meetings the idea of even breaking it up to the point where the school itself the educational component is at perhaps at cheshire high school with you know a separate building with the uh administrative component the internet itself so we've looked at a couple of different options there we're continuing to pursue those options okay thanks sorry well this goes along with that has anyone considered um what is it like 9 million 12 million dollars that is the placeholder amount for has anyone discussed what putting nine million dollars into uh chapman yes we have discussed that as an option because there were very i came about so much smaller numbers yeah yeah we and we've talked about some of that um that's part of our considerations when we look at a full around of options and trying to be very creative as we approach that problem uh creative related space money locations things like that so yeah that's definitely a consideration and it is um just to add to it rental property is it possible to write in a long-term lease particularly for the administrative components if we're not doing the students like the gym and other spaces like that probably needs a little bit more right it's harder to find their level like that okay so my question simply had to do with what i raised with you guys earlier and that is what is going on with pricing and inflation and i am really concerned about it yeah especially with that story out of torrington um so what what do we do about it how do what are you guys anticipating whose responsibility is the town councils or is it ours yeah um yeah that's all i saw i think some four dots so right now obviously um what we're seeing is um uh i don't even know if it's the peak but it's probably the most volatile that we've seen so far i mean we were seeing it when cold we first started we were in the midst of finishing projects and we were fortunate we had all our materials in place and we were able to get through it with minimal impact now it's getting to the point we're working on some roofing projects in multiple districts where um you know materials applied and we've all you know it's kind of fun we're going to months before it got into the news material supply we already seen it um but roofing materials are out eight ten months we're we're just we're putting out for bid some roofing projects for summer 23 expecting them not to even be able to come in um but as far as pricing goes we just spit out um the last project in south windsor um those bids came approximately eight ten percent over our budget um the some of our packages we put out were just they we were doing fine all of a sudden when we got hit with our another run packages coming in and we're over bit drywall steel is up that increase from just april and june to now um so it's really volatile and frankly it's um a challenge we've been incorporating three and a half four percent compounded interest for many years has been consistent i'm not sure where to put on that right now one of i think it's the responsibility i think grumpy falls probably mostly with town council investment but i think there's got to be a collective discussion with the stakeholders including really the state of connecticut too because they're seeing this around obviously saw torrential the what we don't want to do is build a budget that looks so fat the taxpayers know you're overbuilt right you're overcompensating i think that's always as someone recommends these budgets to district that's always a concern because we're one frankly we're a consultant right we're we're paid to work in this project so we don't want to over budget but we don't want to underplay it too so where's the sweet spot one of the strategies that i would uh recommend that we used in a previous district for hazardous materials is a signing even within the referendum a specific amount of contingency that's a own and we haven't discussed with town council so forgive me if we want if anybody is do you put aside a lot of money in the referendum that the town council holds as a contingency so that if say we go to bids and it's over we can go back to town council here here's what's going on here's our bids here's our estimates we value it we've done everything we can to keep this within budget we're still over budget can we borrow some of that money and maybe top council can they can hold it if we don't need it it just doesn't get borrowed that's just one idea and you know that i was thinking of so that when when these numbers come out these letters come out there's not so over inflated and the next thing you know we're coming back to normal and now we have all this excess money and the perception is oh we're over building some taj mahal some fancy school it's finding that right balance so we're in a very very challenging time phase right now on these these budgets to build them i think when we get to selecting options to win the expect because that's a strong driver well drafted what we think and i think it's got to be an open conversation with with everyone to go um how can we best mitigate if this thing continues how can we mitigate um the project we don't want the project to build from being over bid we don't want to go back out the referendum that's just very hard to do it's expensive but there's fatigue and taxpayers like well why don't we look you're asking the same questions you're asking why do we account for it um so i think we need to talk with everybody what are some of the best ways we can account for it but also protect the taxpayers and assure them that we're not going to overspend we're going to properly budget for it but realizing some of the stuff's out of our control i mean i just got a call today they're better understand um i can't even get my pricing from my supplier they might have to withdraw the next better is 500 000 higher yeah and it's like it's it's like kidding me like we're ready to sign a contract so what is the standard consistency percentage typically that you would propose on the project and then given the inflation for these crimes yeah so yeah so i'll give you so i'll give you the north school i got the budget right in front of me so we do like a high low probable so i'm just gonna give it a high range so the total project um on the high rate is roughly 64 million with what we shared with smc um within that um and we have stock bus and hard costs but of that uh four million of it is almost contingency okay um that's just contingency but the inflation and this is this is i don't want to get too too technical but um we had estimated um our construction budget was is 50 million dollars of that escalating out four years was 6.4 million dollars just for escalation at three and a half percent compounded to four years we get to the midpoint of construction so six million dollars just in escalation for every three and a half percent compounded on four years uh from a mark from march of eight of march of this year out to um i think it's 20 20 uh four years so for 2025 roughly uh for that is when we would you know what we're incorporating into the construction budget so um yeah someone say 6.4 million that's a lot of dollars right well when you're escalating in times like this uh should it be six percent seven percent when the numbers start so if you know that number that percentage you're in the wrong room that's what i say i knew that i'm in the wrong room i'm in the wrong business if i can predict that um just being very honest about it there our estimators are absolutely befuddled right now we're doing estimates on projects and we're trying to figure out what's what's the right number to carry it to tell the owner what this budget's going to be all are you know we've been lucky in the south window program we did three projects all were within budget luckily we saved them over three million dollars collectively with those three this one came over by that so we're hopefully gonna be able to use some of those you know to supplement it um but if you're only doing one off project or two-off when you get that money so i think it's a collective discussion um to say what it should be right now i think would be irresponsible we have to kind of manage and watch how this economy goes and supply materials i don't think it's going to be resolved in the next six months i think it's going to probably be a good 10 to 12 months depending happens it could be great um these different variants are coming out but we have a lot of professionals in the industry that we pull in construction managers architects and the state of connecticut has a lot of you know we have a lot of data we can pull to hopefully come up with a reasonable solution but it's not all just in the private budget maybe a referendum like i said i'm just proposing one option maybe do we do a set aside that town council owns it's in their opinion we gotta go hey we need some of that to move forward and that's just one yeah my other concern too is labor because they are talking about um increases in state workers salaries and we're doing prevailing wage and we're seeing in fact another five percent there does that that could that could definitely potentially impact i mean we get labor wage rates for many many projects and i haven't seen over the years really big spikes they don't increase but we'll i mean we can go and i can final prevailing wage rates for a project right now and go what are they doing compared so laborers but i think it's more than materials obviously and we've been hearing that um just against supply is the issue and um and then also the actual time frame our schedules we have to keep in mind too um because global schedule now i probably build it more on the fat side because of the delivery of these and what's important is what do we do when we want to open that school what fall do we want to open it if we're running real tight you know i said we haven't gotten until that fall of 2025 we went looking fall 2026 because of roofing materials um we're having problems with jim and the big joy see the long stance we're having to look at alternative ways of manufacturing those right now in order to meet schedule um we release early packages to get steel going concrete sites so we're using every strategy we can with our partners on the project to mitigate schedule mitigate costs uh we're getting really creative right now to to meet these so um i i don't think there's one silver bullet for this i think it's going to be open dialogue with all stakeholders and being realistic you know of what's going on here but also having some safeguards of against overspray because we're in this debt i think what's happening when we get the other side we're going to look back when we hopefully will have excess money we can maybe shed some back and not borrow that and say taxpayers you know the money so i think also faith that uh with regards to torrents and the other piece of that puzzle was the uh enrollment huge spike he had a lot of the you know people coming from new york and the influx there and that impacted the just the footprint of the school i can buy 30 000 square feet so you have to take that and multiply that by the cost per square foot 365 we talked about earlier that you know was also another factor so that's why the demographic piece that slam would be providing is so critical too up front to understand what that right side is this one actually just goes back to as i'm looking at their map there's a lot of vegetation and trees that are is there embedded costs to replant you know in states probably talking about norton primarily it's about primarily more yeah so um [Music] law that i'm aware of i don't know no no we try to look at in some cases on the one we're just fitting um there's a beautiful large shirt at the back when we did the serving we saw the surveyor you know anything that's um you know 18 inches in caliber or whatever you know to specifically survey that one so that we can see where the build is and maybe we can work around so we saved this one trade because it's going to be used for outdoor classrooms and it's it's beautiful you just can't get those anymore so um it is taking into account um clients i'm going to be involved but also our landscape architects we want to let them go build a just a comment on the trees that those concerns you know a little bit farther away i if i recall a test fit had at least 100 foot setback uh from the uh former property so i don't know how much how many feet that is currently uh from from the property lines but i know it was at least 100 feet uh for the test it's a pretty big site you know when you're looking on a piece of paper this big it doesn't look as big but it's it's a it's a good-sized parcel back there and i think i think lots are deep too all the lots on what's the street right yeah sharon mormont you had mentioned something about the possibility of pushing opening out the fall 2026 does that mean that we would have to is that are we getting into trailer territory at that point for one year and don't take that as gospel i'm just trying to i don't know but you know worst case you know it was you know we're talking packing on another million dollars for trailer rentals for a year or something like that for the overflow because that's when we start peaking right is uh 12 20 25 and you're saying you can't store the roof job we're talking about two whole schools yeah and we're hoping obviously we're all delights when we get to this this thing is resolved yeah you know if we're learning these things we want to make sure we educate everybody this is the stuff we're dealing with out hopefully it goes away but that's the challenge we have right now and and i don't say it to scare anybody or to to be an alarmist just it's just the reality of some of the things and hopefully again hopefully you know the clog in the piping system right now hopefully it clears and things start flowing again and these are all conversations right fingers crossed you're about a year and a half to two years from starting construction too so let's hope [Applause] how far are you locking contracts just in general 12 months or do you go beyond that no so when we go to bed and we go out to bed they have to hold their bits [Music] but once we sign a contract with a gmp that we call the internet with a contractor those prices are locked in now the reality is they're coming back on their roof and guys like oh the installations go up another eight percent um it's a number right now i've never i've never seen this in my years and um like the roofing jobs what you know they put a bid and we said okay we're ready to go oh by the way we're going to increase right when we think six eight percent okay the owner's like well should they win well if he's only gonna own it they're gonna back out and say you know keep my bid i'm not i'm not going to get hurt i'm not going to take the risk um but so understand i got to get this roof done so we're saying well let's do a live suggestion let's go open the book here mr contractor if you want to keep the job you want to stay in business we want to get a job done we got to work together here so show us what you carried in your bid and i suggested you show us those numbers now so that there is an increase you give us that document we take the delta we give you 10 on top when we just today and they're like well if there's you know kind of what you're talking comes up we you know we want to reserve the rag get rid of it so in terms of like steel or concrete or anything that's you know three or four years out you're locking in that contract for those years and in this in a normal world that's more stable whether in the process it's the it's the products down the line that uh you know what we try to get but if there's a challenge that we try to procure as quickly as we can bring them outside the store that's that's hopefully so here here's my question then um is there a benefit from purchasing perspective or from any other perspective i guess that you can proceed in terms of let's say a march referendum versus a november referendum because it seems to me that if we do a referendum say in march and it passes then you go to oscgr on june 30th they're probably getting back to us sometime before november i'm thinking probably july or august they would come back with some sort of decision like if we're going about the priority list we're going to proceed with you with an agreement and you're going to get an agreement from us to get reimbursement yeah that's probably october october okay so forget about the november point oh wait so either way we go to them in june they're coming back to us in october priority list we know if we have a grant application december 15 they just finished their list yesterday and we will unless so if you're if you're building 100 000 square foot building i mean i'm assuming you know 80 of the raw materials you're going to need regardless of what changes happen no not yet no no no really no the specifications are develop through design yeah you i know you're saying hey we pre-purchased epdm and roof insulation for now we couldn't do it that really well and then okay okay and then if you locked in and then in prices then we look like idiots we're holding this really expensive roofing i'm just saying if we're concerned about it you want to avoid volatility my simple question was can you lock in if you know that you're in the wrong room again yeah no i don't know what's gonna happen i'm just saying no well that's the thing is we don't either it's too hard to predict that far out to make a purchase that you know that that may go up or down we just have to manage it through the design process and then we estimate three different times that we you know we have our partner skill okay what's going on what's going on and we're we're adjusting for that okay yeah yeah you're just saying we [Music] um have any questions who made the motion i did in here
so I'm doing my motion again for January 20th uh so I'm putting that motion in now oh we need a second give me a second we're moving back down to 4.03 for the Public's Clarity so let's let's keep it all in order and I have a motion already by board member Chavez uh to uh amend your motion and there's a second by board member [Music] and uh please uh clarify the date for the record May January 20th all right and so the change will be January 20th in that Mutual motion all right there's a motion in a second to adopt the language with the uh Amendment uh January 20th rather than the 17th I took public comment on this item before um so we're going to go ahead and move on it moving forward I'm sorry do we have to take it again since we amended the motion you know what let me yeah let me go ahead and open it up yeah it is there a public comment on this item uh since we're taking it again 4.03 nope public come in at this time all right see none then I'm going to go back to the board I'm just gonna call for a vote um we weren't in person that would be a lot quicker here hi hi vice president Farm hi remember hi myself uh yes abortion is unanimous all right we went outside on 4.05 uh this item is uh for the board to consider the formation of teacher housing task force I brought this item forward uh not for the intention of having it have anything to do with negotiations or anything like that I wanted to make it abundant and clear that uh the purpose of bringing this forward is for the long term it is for us to begin the conversation and the reason that it's only here for information is to be super abundant trans incredibly transparent so we we as a board can have a conversation whether or not the board is interested in even interchanging this and moving this forward um and so as I mentioned I want to reiterate this is not about uh and for any any of any purposes of negotiations or anything like that this is a long-term view we we have a a crisis um that is Nationwide um and uh it is a the fact of the matter is that our schools of Education are not um graduating enough teachers um and and it is creating a serious crisis um and so therefore I am interested in having us begin this conversation is that it's just for information to see if there's even interest to bring it back for Action at the next meeting to establish a task force to start looking at the concept of teacher housing um possibly using some of our land to be able to allow us to provide um relatively affordable housing for those who are teaching in our district to attempt to address the crisis that we're facing um and uh and I'm talking about the broader crisis of not enough teachers coming out of the schools of Education so uh with that said I'll go ahead and open up two comments from the board uh board member Chavez yeah so um thank you so we just partnered with Goodwill of Silicon Valley in the uh their meeting and they're also doing the Workforce Development Center wouldn't we be kind of conflicting with their agenda or their purpose in doing so um because I know that I asked before if I could see um their I guess business plan and see how they lay out all their work um and I haven't seen it yet and if I could see that and so to see what they're doing and they're going to be doing down the line uh especially since we just brought in that partner I wouldn't like to or maybe it's going to be co-mingled I don't know what it's going to look like but I would like to see that first thank you um so I know you asked about uh if there's interest I'm definitely interested I think it's definitely something worth investing time in and um having uh focused you know group um to look into what that can look like and my only thoughts are I would like to expand it just to see as housing in general um definitely for teachers but uh you know just looking at the possibilities for even you know some of our families that um that you know obviously housing is also affecting I'm not saying that it would include that I'm just saying to not limit it to just teachers and maybe doing you know just leaving um leaving a general in regards to housing Workforce task force whatever we we name it I know right now under its information only as that I just offer that as a just general comment um to consider when and if we decide to move forward um and then I'm confused as to uh trustee Chavez's comments um I don't remember a partnership yet or any of that but um yeah I mean there's I'm sure there's going to be so many possibilities I'm imagining um and models that we can look at um to move forward so I look forward to you know having a focused task force and then as a board hearing back what those possibilities can look like I'm excited to have this conversation thank you for bringing it Forward uh president uh vice president Palm yes I I want to thank you too for for bringing this uh issue uh as we know it's very tough to live in in any portion of the Bay Area we have a we have a housing shortage for many years this pandemic has exacerbated that uh so you know it is certainly something that I I hope that will help us with uh uh what attracting quality teachers and also uh teacher retention um but uh you know I too share uh trustee Herrera loera's uh thoughts about Apostle you know um looking at this as also uh the possibility possibility of housing in general but I would say let you know um with that too well we can say uh with giving our teachers our in our classified staff priority uh for uh you know uh you know priority Focus you know and we yes we can you know and if if there is a you know if there is and if we're able to you know to to also export for The Wider Alan walk community in general I mean you know given that uh we are all hurting uh you know I know I I certainly know that you know many of our our students are living in uh in you know in homes where multiple families are residing too so uh it certainly is an important you know it certainly is a conversation uh well worth having and you know let's see how we can uh you know even you know uh where we can use some of our resources to help help our teachers help our staff and uh help our families also board member of I don't know uh yeah thank you president yeah I will be supportive of um kind of moving this discussion forward and getting more information about it um I because I do think that it's just wise when there are scenarios like this or possibilities like this to look into it and you know I think we in some sense have the obligation as board members to look into opportunities if they could feasibly have a benefit to to the district and so I would be supportive of continuing to find information I would be very curious about um the the notion of opening it up in general just because I my admittedly limited understanding at this point of how some of these um these things have worked is that there's kind of specific intent of um as trusty Pham alluded to uh retention Recruitment and Retention for for staff um and so I just I would be curious in further discussions what the um you know what the cost benefit would be to opening up even wider than that specifically also because I think if we were to ever go in that direction we would obviously have a limited supply of Housing and there is a very vast need as we all know so it's just there's a lot of questions to be answered I um you know I have additional questions that I probably would ask at a later time but I think it's wise to move forward with a discussion on it um and see where that goes so I will I would support that direction um after this conversation tonight all right uh I'm gonna go ahead and make some comments and then I'll go back to you uh board member Chavez uh so I'm I'm thank you for the support uh that I'm I'm I'm seeing here one of the concerns about just simply saying let's go for all affordable housing is as board member Brandon mentioned there's significantly and uh I I'm I am concerned that the city in the county would see we've got some land here let's go ahead and build out to resolve all of the County's problems on the backs of uh and uh not the county county the cities it needs on the backs of the land uh that the kids rightfully deserve the open space that our communities rightfully deserve um and so my the reason that I had brought it Forward has very narrowly focused for Teacher housing is because we see models that are in place such as Santa Clara unified and has already in place the structure that is that allows them to operate uh affordable housing for their teachers specifically um they uh you know these are preliminary conversations with other board members in passing and advanced and stuff that sort um not that I've seen any sort of formal conversations of any sort of just asking questions how do you guys how does it work out um and the the response has been our biggest problem is that we don't have enough of it and we wish we had uh the ability because Atlanta is just too expensive on here so those are some of the preliminary conversations I'm um you know very comfortable moving forward and and exploring the possibility of housing for everyone but I we have a very unique need and we have a need to get teachers for our kids everybody else is budgeted to deal with their with the issue that they have budgets for and that's why I narrowly focused it for Teacher housing but if it's the will of the board to open it up to explore all affordable housing on Alum Rock land and then that's something that we can definitely explore but I would caution everyone that right now we would probably be inundated with uh desire to fill every square inch of uh fields in open space by those who are looking to you know and obviously the need to to resolve this this crisis but I would be concerned about having uh us overwhelmed if we start going down that path uh that'll be up for this board to decide all right board members uh when I was president and I brought this to the session about teacher housing I was um said uh nobody went for it so uh one trustee in particular came out in in Open Session and said not to two other board members so now I am happy to see this but at the same time um I want trustee said that she doesn't remember us voting on that if we do this and if we open it up to the public it does open up a can of worms where we can be uh looked at more and scrutinize more by other entities trying to um get the lamp so in doing so I like I said I would like to see the business plan because if Alum Rock is in the business of Education Alum Rock is not in the business of um uh housing teachers but three years ago it was I I understood that uh when I spoke to the superintendent that uh the teachers union was not interested so my question is have you asked them if they're interested now and probably not because we're just getting this information but I would like to see something in writing but I would like to see first the business plan of the other partnership that we just took on with the Goodwill Industries to see if uh our partners are okay with um us continuing in this uh or if we can work with them or if they want to work with us or not that's fine too but um to get uh the experts and stuff like that to start letting us know um I guess I would like to see something in writing and not just a discussion thank you all right thank you Chavez this conversation wouldn't have taken place in closed session because it's not a closed session conversation there is a limited uh scope of things that you can bring up in closed session and it's obviously this does not fall into one of those things one of those categories um I am not uh I for one I would ask the rest of my colleagues not going to go around asking permission of anybody any other organizations to engage in conversations amongst ourselves within the district um this is being brought forward as an information item purposely so that there can be full transparency as it just a conversation amongst this board and uh input from the public um and uh if anybody else is interested in in in providing input is a public meeting they're able to go roll back the tape and view it um and I'll I'll go ahead and call on boardroom okay I I mean I was going to mention also the the thing about closed session and obviously if there were things to be discussed the closed session it's it wouldn't be appropriate to bring them up here in Open Session but um I I don't think that was the case in this instance um and also I concur I think with uh trusted that I I don't I understand um in some sense what trustee Chavez is is referring to with regards to um recent partnership possibilities that have been brought to us I would just um you know suggest maybe re-looking at that item that we had recently because I don't think that um it what we did and what we had in that meeting with regards to those Partnerships is actually what um what the concern is at this time so just that but I think moving forward with conversation with Gathering further information there's there's no reason to in my estimation to um you know delay that or or have any any barriers to that at this time I saw that Dr Bauer Hunter yeah just to clarify for you and the public there is no formal partnership with any entity that we don't we have not brought forth to the board in the form of a lease or an mou where we presented to the board during the special board meeting was a report of us having conversations with Goodwill Industries and with some Juan Bautista Early Learning Centers so it is only um conversations with them there is absolutely no formal partnership I just want to make be very clear because this this uh the public needs to know about that thank you and I'll remind members of the board that we authorized in previous action before that report uh the administration to go out there and uh look for Partnerships and so that report was basically a response to the authorization that was provided as a board uh board member Chavez yeah yeah uh yes we did authorize that and I also uh requested to see their their business plan and we haven't seen that yet is there any way possible that the district can get that to us uh before the next meeting this is I'm just requesting it I know uh Dr Bauer has uh thank you trustee Chavez and I really appreciate you want to have more information at this point because there is no formal partnership there is no um documentation there is no we are still in the very preliminary conversations about any idea with them and so I just um there will be nothing for us to produce in terms of business plan or any of that nature because there's no formal agreement with them thank you thank you uh board member I was just going to mention that um you know I think as a board right if we say yes we're going to have this partnership um you know then then we'll have all that but um I think we we set that up Dr Brower to report back come back a couple months to see yeah so I'm excited you know I think like trustee Chavez to see a plan to see what that can look like you know bringing in maybe possible funding for our schools and our our district um but yeah so I look forward to see a plan eventually too whether it's you know whoever it is um but yeah so I just thank you for clearing all that up because uh I was concerned that trustee Chavez maybe was an understanding where we were at but thank you for clearing that up Dr Brown all right um for the comments all right uh anybody else who has not spoken right uh what remember Chavez did you have Carmen I know you raise your hand up uh in the interest of the time I'm Gonna Save it thanks all right all right well this item is for information the idea was that it was uh intended to be just what we've had a discussion amongst ourselves uh as well you know in in full view of the public and uh the opportunity to to also weigh in on uh the possibility of pursuing um eventually bringing back and an item not to um go out there and start building but to just get more information formally in a very transparent manner about what the possibilities are um and so I'm looking forward to putting an item on the agenda uh for Action uh based upon um on on what the input that I've that I've heard today uh so uh for those interested feel free to come and join us at the next meeting so we can have a further discussion in the possibility of establishing a task force uh any uh comments from members of the public we'll say have I take you public companies where president at this time we have no public coming uh give them a few seconds there somebody's all right um seeing no uh public comment then we will go ahead and uh move on with item number five point oh one uh the approval of uh 2021 2022 uh first interim report uh Dr Bauer do you want to go ahead and take this on and I would ask you if within the uh first interim um and I know that it's within the scope of that you'd be able to provide a thorough breakdown of some of the coveted expenditures a lot of questions have been raised around that and if we can get very very narrowly focused on you know obviously this isn't going to be a line item breakdown but uh we I personally would like to see a lot of examples so that the public is very well aware of where the expenditures have been made um the floor is yours to talk about absolutely um this is public information and we have that we will have that breakdown available remember that the the funds are being spent as we use them I just want to remind the public that we do have the first interim book online as part of the board meeting materials and I before I turn it over to Mr Chang I want to highlight three very important pages so that everybody who wants to know the finances of Alum Rock um in a quick look without having to go into all the detail will have the kind of information that you need so if you look at page number one of these of that document you have a summary of all of the different Pockets the but the the buckets that we have in the um in the district if you go then to page number five page number five is the general fund unrestricted that will give you a sense of our major um sources of revenue specifically the lcff and then amount that we will be getting that we have that we receive in 2019 2020 that we receive in 2021 and that we receive in 2122 that we will receive as of right now because there are there's no nothing else that we can that that we know for sure this anything else is coming 22 23 and then 23 24.
north on the other hand is under first head first year head coach brett white although he's been with the program for many years they're 7-3 and also coming in with some tough-minded defense they'll play man-to-man a lot and they're averaging around giving up around 40 points and averaging 52.8 so brett i think what we'll all expect tonight is to see north and east studs see how they react in this environment with barker and lawson for north and grivey and stall for east see how those role players come out and perform but i'm looking for a great matchup tonight yeah it'll definitely be interesting to see how as you mentioned neither group has uh aside from just a handful of players corrine being one and and kyla being another who have experience in this game from a couple years ago uh most as you said do not so we'll have to see it'll be interesting that first quarter uh jitters probably the biggest crowd that that uh either team has played in front of this year maybe last year combined with with cobit protocols in place in most gyms so we'll have to see how uh how they react uh you're right with the with the uh the four four girls that you mentioned uh they are the leading scorers of both teams it'll be interesting to see who produces but from my perspective maybe more interesting to see how how they're defended who matches up against whom and what the strategy is for both both coaching staffs entering this contest absolutely east will bring in a lot of height which you will see right off the bat compared to this north team so north has a lot of really skilled guards and again if if east comes out and does their uh full court press and is trapping it'll be interesting to see who wins that turnover game because both coaches probably aren't happy with the amount of turnovers each uh team has had throughout the year i'm curious on on how again the pressure the atmosphere affects a lot of these girls who haven't been in in this environment so brett i know that you are very close with all these players um i'm gonna have you start by just kind of talking about that east roster with us and then we'll move on to north and kind of give us a preview of the players that we're going to see tonight yeah absolutely both both teams full of good coaching and really great kids so i'm excited to be able to talk about them here a little bit tonight east is led by karine garivey of course she's the senior averaging nearly 16 a game um corrin's she's an athlete she has been an athlete for a while she's a two-time republic um player of the year and girls basketball in the city um she's all things run through her and they have for a while for this east team so we expect her to to uh to play well albany spear number three senior for for east former rock creek bulldog she she can shoot the lights out if she's given the opportunity matter of fact she had four threes in a row from the same spot within about five minutes on saturday afternoon at the orange pit so she can be dangerous as well sage stahl she's averaging as well as corinne nearly 16 a game sage sage keeps getting better the more she plays she's a six-footer she plays like she's 6'4 she's everywhere on the floor she's got good ball handling skills and and as i mentioned she she's a good athlete and good volleyball player and she just seems to keep getting uh better and and lastly mentioned leah bachmann she's a junior player who also is progressing and doing well she's playing more on the perimeter mainly because harley gant being in the center playing at the post and sage stahl playing so well at the post also for east and danny's put the uh put leah out on the perimeter a little bit and she does a good job handing the ball it doesn't get uh doesn't get frazzled at all and and she has a good jump shot for uh for a post type body so a lot of athletes on this east team and we'll see how they how they respond here on the road across town and as brett is talking through the talent that's on the east roster it goes without saying that columbus north girls programs both schools have had we've had over 12 all-state girl athletes throughout the years both schools have been to the state finals north winning it with allie patberg at the lead the tradition of columbus north and columbus east girls basketball is well known across the state and it's again a special treat to have two really good teams be playing tonight so brett as we move to that north roster what are we expecting from them north will start three seniors and two juniors today uh emma long unfortunately a starting point guard junior for the dogs has a broken elbow and has been out for a few weeks unfortunately she has to miss this one uh that that hurts the dogs but they have others that step up leading columbus north is senior number 11 kyla lawson she's been a three-year starter for columbus north she's she has ability to play at the next level she's everywhere on the floor she uh averages about 13 points a game and she averages more than seven rebounds a game so um good jump shot she's hitting several three-pointers this year as well also a scoring threat most things run through number three lauren barker especially with emma long being out lauren's averaging um also about 14 points a game and she actually holds the single game school record for made three pointers in a game early last season as a sophomore so it'll be interesting to see how how east defends uh those two um if they can get andrea justus going on the post she can add as a threat um as well um kayla jones number 21 she's a newcomer to north high school came over from columbus christian she actually scored 17 quiet points i'd say on tuesday against seymour and she she plays similar to kyla that she's just everywhere i think she had 95 rebounds it seemed like on tuesday but a very athletic kid and and giving north a boost here uh with a couple injuries so yeah so we'll see how well they match up together but a lot of good talent both ways we got about two minutes here before we uh before we tip uh as i mentioned we we are joined by dr jim roberts so dr roberts thanks for jumping in here with us any uh pregame thoughts that you want to share with the listeners uh dr bozeman mr williams great to be with you tonight i'm looking forward to this game it's been two years since i've been able to see a game like this north versus east and as you've been talking just two outstanding programs teams and uh really excited to see how they how they play tonight yeah we certainly agree and thanks for thanks for being here we uh we'll have we'll have dr roberts jump in here a little bit with some with some questions and some commentary throughout the game so appreciate his his joining so um nick you mentioned east records is 10 and two i believe they're ranked number nine in the state last i checked and north coming with a 7-3 record can you talk a little bit about the common opponents that they've that they've had so far this year absolutely it is because the style of plays are so different between the two teams it is kind of hard to gauge what what's gonna happen here because uh they play so different um but there are some common opponents martinsville both of them played martinsville and came away with the win but the most interesting to note i think is hamilt two of north three losses hamilton southeastern and east central uh east ended up winning uh beating hamilton southeastern by two and beating east central by nine so if you look at common opponents east has the upper edge there but they they really both start all juniors and seniors it'll be interesting to see north has started wilson as a sophomore and we expect her to get a lot of playing time but that's really the only the only underclassmen that we expect to get significant time so again an experienced group but i think for everyone having it been two years since they've last played it'll be new and if we go back two years ago they actually played twice and split split that series one north winning in regulation a regular season in east winning and sectional i'm going gonna pause here for the announcer to go [Applause] on officials are trained experienced and licensed they are officiating tonight's game because of their desires uh [Music] so [Applause] [Music] special thanks to the sound of north for their national anthem here tonight introductions now for east starters number two corn gravy she's a five seven senior albany spear number three five six senior sharp shooter that we mentioned before number 20 is the athletic sage stahl she's a forward and a heck of a volleyball player 6-1 on the roster 23 aaliyah bachmann also a junior six-footer can shoot the ball very well and finally harley gant she's a 6-3 center senior for columbus east no surprises on east starting lineup we'll see what north comes out with [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] just got to mention nick we appreciate the the willingness of both schools to work together on such a big event the whole week of rivalry week here these athletic directors just work their tails off and so many things happen behind the scenes for these events to happen so i've always appreciated we moved here in 2008 and i've always appreciated the uh just the camaraderie between schools and both both teams want to win but uh you know that it's done so respectfully and it's just really an exciting atmosphere to be a part of [Music] lauren barker has mentioned number three to five seven saw junior rather for the dogs kyla lawson number 11 senior six foot andrea justice in the middle for the dogs number 12.
so for all of the whoever is in the audience page number five is the unrestricted and the reason the the the revenues that are coming to the district the last page that I want to highlight in that book it's page number seven page number seven is where the covid monies recite I know that there's a lot of comments about people not knowing and I just as a teacher as a good teacher I want to tell you where you can go and you can look for yourself the information that you need page number seven is where these restricted funds including covet funds are so without further Ado I'm gonna turn it over to Mr Chang thank you power and good evening board president and members of the board um let me share screen with this foreign see my screen yes thank you so good evening again um tonight I'll be presenting an overview of the uh first interim of the current year um and with that some of the topics that will be going over um are key changes to legislations um key assumptions that the districts used in preparing its first interim report um will also be going over the multi-year projection and lastly next steps and future consideration so this year uh brought upon two significant changes that will impact not only districts in California but uh mainly Alum Rock um the first change is a good change um this this change involved in the increase in the concentration Grant adjustment from 50 to 65 percent um and again this is a welcome change because it does provide additional funding um in lcff um however um these additional fundings do have strings attached to it as you can see in bullets um number two uh these funds are to be used to increase staff who provide Direct Services to students um including custodial staff and another requirement for this change is that the districts would need to present an lcap supplement by February 28 2022 and so we're bringing we'll be bringing a report uh in the near future for the board to review the second change involves unspent supplemental concentration Grant funds um in previous years um those unspent funds uh were able to fall to the unrestricted general fund um this is no longer allowed um starting in the current fiscal year moving forward and so those unspent funds will now have to be designated um as unused portion of the supplemental concentration Grant funds and they must be spent on specific actions contributing to them to meeting um the minimal proportionality percentage the MPP requirement and again the districts will provide will need to provide a report outlining um the use of those funds so that was those were the key changes um we'll start with key assumptions um and we'll start with enrollment um you may recall that during budget adoption we used the demographic study to uh project uh number enrollment for the current year and also for the two years out so at budget adoption for the current year we projected to serve 8520 in 2000 2022 and 23 8105 um and in 2020 324 7692.
