early on i've been impressed with emma she doesn't look out of place out there as a freshman you would think you know some nerves but she fits right into what they're trying to do and she's very aggressive player weiss checks back in for smith gosselin's second free throw trickles around and goes in for the seventh point of the game for the spartans thiago has it gets it back to hafee if he gets it over half gets it to azaro and she travels finally finally a traveling call and it will be turned over spartans look to get their offense going well they have to take care of the ball that's half the problem so far dawson's got it she gets it back to macholsky michelski runs the break she gets it over to katanza reedy contenzaridi looks inside past the weiss weiss gets it back she looks to drive lay up just off rebounded by azaro i still like that offense though go to the basket make something happen get fouled zaro's got it in the corner she gets over to den art back to azaro and she's fouled in the paint by i believe michalski yeah gabby picked up that one i wonder if they're gonna run screens on this oh they're not their coach just yelled it that's why i thought so a hook shot goes in he was trying to get one of his players to go set a screen didn't need to though tanzarity loses the ball and it's stolen pass inside denhart's layup is good and another timeout will be taken by islam meadow wow hey a little under six minutes remaining in this half and east law meadows got some ground to cover if they want to come back into this game they need to make something happen once [Music] the ball is tipped and stolen again by hafey a good move in the paint she's guarded by close by weiss shot is up another second chance point for the blue devils michalski keeps it in it's tipped around and hutchins gets it gets it over to siago give and go siago's layup is too strong rebounded by gosselin and then the girl just pushed her another steal and a foul on katanzariti siago gets it in and smacked out of bounds by contanzarity siago tries to get it in nothing going early smacked out of bounds again like a tanzarity another try on the inbound she gets it in it's back over to hutchins hutchins on the drive is stripped and stolen by katanzariti and it'll be a jump ball and that'll go islam meadow's way good defense by katana zuriti force that turnover now everyone's everyone's up here should have sent someone long weiss has it she gets it over to smith smith looks to go baseline and is fouled i wonder how high the score has to go for northampton to take off the press tanzarity looks to drive she gets in layup just off she looks to get her own rebound and she will and it's tipped out of bounds by thiago i believe isa meadow subs michalski checks in as well as sterling devoy and contanzarity check out [Music] weiss looks to get it in she gets to sterling fakes the shot she looks to drive it's tipped and taken back flying everywhere and that ball is tipped out of bounds on micholsky and it'll go back to northampton northampton has it gets it inside back out elbow jumper just off rebound another offensive rebound another layup that ball is stolen by talia weiss she gets a good screen from michalski good pass inside to smith and she can't hang on to it and it is stolen again by thiago who runs the break she gets to the corner it's tipped out of bounds by michalski a couple of northampton subs go in [Applause] [Music] they do get it in the coach keeps saying five out and i keep thinking he's saying timeout so i look over every time it's confusing look to get it inside they get it back out good defense to run the shot clock down corner doesn't get it off in time and another good defensive possession for the spartans forcing the 30-second violation it's the second one they forced this game they can continue out and get their offense going they can get back into this game there's more than enough time weiss has it she gets it across mid-court and is fouled they'll get it on the side that's well next foul for each team will be in one and one ball is tipped out of play by northampton and it'll be another island meadow pass inside [Music] smith has it she gets it into the paint to hard you hard you lay up just off outlet pass to hutchins hutchins throws up a layup that doesn't go sterling gets the rebound she gets it over to smith smith's got it and is fouled by hutchins and that should put her on the line for one and ones having one-on-ones with three minutes left in the half is big for a couple of free points especially when you're trying to come back into a game like this the first from smith bounces up and in [Applause] shooters bounce [Music] to go perfect from the line and she will smith goes two for two from the line and it's a 32-9 northampton lead and it's stolen by smith oh smith pulls a move tries to get it in his foul and chilling another two from the line that's what you need to start doing if you're you saw metal you need to get good looks and possibly get fouled i like the aggressiveness take as many points as you can at this point gotta take it to the basket first from smith she catches it on another free throw [Applause] brings the lead down a bit one more from the lineup from smith she's four for four from the line tonight you gotta hit your foul shots if you're going in like that and a steal from the chelsea michalski takes it up she looks to go in layup is good finally another free field goal for the spartans and they're on a bit of a run right now earth 3 is off and rebounded by michalski micholsky looks to push it her pass up to smith smith is trapped in the corner she gets it out weiss looks to shoot gets it back sterling fake shot she looks to get inside and stolen [Music] layup [Applause] travel violation few subs for northampton check-in pass into weiss is tipped out of bounds and it'll stay spartan's way long pass caught by weiss weiss on the drive is stripped hardy with the steal and the put back way to stick with it carolyn northampton comes with a quick break and a layup ends their scoring drought and they're back up to a 19-point lead layup from smith is just off rebounded by northampton that ball has passed up to azara azaro layup good another fast break layout for north hampton [Music] chalky's got it she goes up the middle runs into a screen by sterling she's in the paint gets it out to michalski micholsky for three bang first three-point field goal of the game goes to sloan meadow that cuts the lead in half pass goes through i don't know how much i agree with that one she was just standing there well getting back to that three that was a nice play by lily to get it and then kick it back out to gabby gabby set her feet and nothing but net first from the line is good [Applause] den hart will have another from the line second free throws up and off the back of the rim rebounded by michalski micholsky slows it down [Music] gets it in to the wing weiss has it she gets it inside and it's stolen stolen by denhart on the break layup is off offensive rebound it's a lot of steps three-pointer hey fee and that goes in lead extended to 40 to 18 north hampton [Music] balls out of bounds off smith blast 41.2 left in the half island meadow looks to get this lead down a little bit more before heading into the locker room for half time has it on a wing another swing and it's stolen by michalski excuse me weiss it's met by two people she gets it over to michalski good pass inside no look shot from the voice just off shot clock turned off 15 seconds remaining and a half it's slowed down by hayfee she looks shoot nothing wrong gets its thiago inside den heart shot is off offensive rebound den hart at the buzzer off and hello chris cooper superintendent clearwater schools here with a brief update it's been a quite a while since i've done one of these so this one will be very short just a couple of things i want to mention first of all welcome to the year 2022. can't believe we're here those of us that can remember y2k when all our computers were going to quit working and and we might the planet might go away all those things we were worried about probably can't even imagine the things we've been through in 2020 and 2021 but 2022 is going to be an outstanding year especially in clearwater kansas we will be back in full swing tomorrow january 4th all classes all activities we're ready to roll we have a lot of stuff coming up uh quickly lots of winter activities and going on i did want to mention covet unfortunately we're still talking about that a year and almost two years into this thing i'm sure you've seen a lot of uh information out about omicron changes in cdc guidance and all those things so just a brief clarification on a couple of things um first of all we're uh we haven't made any significant changes we're business as usual sent out an update after the last board meeting that um we will as always follow county and state health orders so some of those orders are around isolation there are currently no orders about quarantine of close contacts so that's our plan to com to comply with any orders that come out but there aren't uh we won't be uh quarantining close contacts to uh covered positive cases the cdc guidance is a little more confusing i've received some information today from the sedgwick county health department trying to clarify if they're giving guidance or an order i believe it's guidance but we looks like we will be able to adapt and shorten the isolation period for folks who are coveted positive so my best understanding and explanation of that is five days from from when you tested positive and 24 hours symptom free at least 24 hours symptom free so we'll be working through that managing that uh our school nurses will be helping folks who have students who might have coven manage that and and navigate through that the other there's also a lot of other junk going around around that's making people sick and personally we had that hit our house and the cooper house we all had something that wasn't very fun but wasn't covered we took the tests and but we still don't want other people to have it so in general we're just i'm just asking that if you're sick if you're students sick have them stay home we've always had the policy that you'd be 24 hours fever free to attend school that's just to keep everybody well and safe so that's really the primary reason to send this out today is just asking everyone to stay home if you're not feeling well keep students home if they're sick and that can help us continue to stay in school the one thing we don't want to have is a lot of students out a lot of staff out we might be short on sub bus drivers or substitute teachers puts us in a real struggle to continue to provide the high quality education that that we want to when we're short on staff so that's really all i have for today it's going to be a great 2022 it's not used to saying that yet i wrote it for the first time today but i'm excited about things to come this year that's all i have for today have a great one you

sherryville parks department shareable parks department has requested that mrs kelly be their liaison which i believe she does have support for that so with all of that with the exception of dyer that should say shareable do we have a motion move to accept the liaison positions all right we have a motion second second by mr marshall mr marshall aye ms kelly um excuse me cindy yes hello hello yeah i would like to add the dire parks back to the event we worked very hard to get that on this couple years ago i believe it was explained to me that the dyer parks department has to request a liaison unless i'm wrong he did that's why cindy cindy that's why they that's why the position was added because they didn't request that okay um madam president yes i respectfully would wish that we defer this till we get an official representation from dyer as to the request for a dire parks liaison not that dr malcow is not acceptable but we've seen nothing recently and it's kind of out of order at this point it can be deferred to a later date all right are you okay with that dr malcolm absolutely wonderful so with all of the liaison appointments with mrs kelly being with the shareable parks department do we have a motion motion to approve we have a motion by ms kelly second second by dr medlin mr marshall aye ms kelly aye dr meddlin aye dr melco aye and i am and i also move on to our topics consent agenda dr baracko thank you again mrs seek board approval for the minutes from our meeting on december 13th and then also board approval for the claims payroll and extracurricular expenditures that you received in your packets last week both to approve we have a motion by mr marshall second second by mrs kelly any discussion hearing none mr marshall aye ms kelly aye dr medlin aye dr malcolm and i am and i also thank you i don't believe we have any public comment on action items this evening so we'll move right into our official school board business topics regular agenda dr veraco thank you again i do want to review a couple of legislative items as we all know tomorrow begins the general assembly's work in the short session the short session is designed to not cover too many financial items it is expected to be over somewhere around the middle of march and i believe the at the organizational day meeting they confirmed that they do intend to be done by the middle of march having said that there are still several educational items um that have been tossed out there for consideration um and so i wanted to review a couple of those with you this evening and i wanted to begin by talking about something i mentioned at our last meeting and that was the civil liability exemption that came through in ic 3430-32-7 last year that indicated if we followed those rules we could be not be subjected to civil penalty if somebody gets really sick or dies from covid in our schools and so i wanted to put that in the packet so that the board would have it in case you get questioned on that um that was effective last february 18th and so they put it into effect as a as i said i think at the last meeting to motivate those folks who were doing still virtual to get them back into in-person instruction because there's a it's not just lake central administration that highly values in-person instruction it's also the indiana general assembly i wanted to mention briefly also senate bill 22 which would increase the amount of the state tax deduction from 100 to 500 dollars for education educators who purchase supplies it'd be interesting to see the details on this because some folks who previously don't contribute at certain levels might have the opportunity if they're educators to help our education foundation out so i will not go into details because i don't have them but i will follow this bill closely because it could benefit our organization that supports staff doing student activities in their classrooms hb 10 1001 is got a low number so you know it's going to get a lot of emphasis this is the bill that's going to come out of the gate tomorrow and probably up be on a fast track to try to end the public health emergency without jeopardizing federal funds coming to the state of indiana so without getting into details on that we will follow that very closely and then finally something that came across the wire today is senate bill 167 and this is a pretty big catch-all bill i'm going to call it the curriculum and lesson plan transparency bill because there are a lot of pieces in here about asking public schools to put together committees for all sorts of things regarding individual teacher lessons to make sure that they are appropriate or acceptable to the local community and then also require posting of a lot of these materials online it appears to be rather cumbersome as i've told the board earlier tonight in our work session to put together committees of all these people i don't know where the time comes from or where you get all the people to do so as i've said many times in the past sometimes it's hard to draw information from your children when they come home from school they don't want to talk about what went on in their classroom but if you're persistent enough you can usually get them to talk about the things they like and the things they didn't like and if our parents make a concerted effort across the state to do that not just at lake central i think it would uncover anything that somebody would find offensive or troubling or questioning and at least all the administrators i know will be quick to investigate if somebody says hey i think they're talking about some stuff in the class that doesn't have anything to do with the curriculum so i just want it to be on everybody's radar that's senate bill 167 could be really problematic for us because i don't think there's enough time in a day to accomplish what it looks like they want done and so i just wanted to make sure the board knows that through our leadership organizations of the superintendents and the school boards association and principals association and maybe even rob's business officials are this sort of out of their lane we're going to express our concern with the time required to to meet all these things that they have listed of course it's just the first draft so it will change a lot but i have to tell you at first glance it looks problematic so i wanted to talk about that any questions about legislation i mean it hasn't started yet so it's but we will have them and i will continue to bring stuff to you because i think it's important because it impacts the way we do business and as i've said many times we're all struggling to get through the regular school day given the circumstances we're dealing with and springing a whole lot of changes on top of that you know the timing isn't great not that we don't want to get better we always want to continue to move the organization forward but we want to be reasonable about it too my second item is just to before you move on uh either dr malcol or yourself in the recent reorganization of legislators did northwest indiana lose any representation in the uh gerrymandering or whatever you want well the election is this the election is going to be this fall so we won't know until i mean the territories changed but we won't know how that plays out until november i appreciate that but propose legislation you know during the election and everything like that are we going to lose any representation if it goes through it has to be voted upon when you say lose representation i'm not sure i know what you mean we all are going to continue to have somebody in the house and somebody in the senate um are could our district be uh carved up to where it's not just mr slager maybe i haven't studied those maps okay okay i'll back off on that and and pursue that later all right thank you so you know as we went through the holiday break and we continued to watch the data and we have seen that cases have gone up but having said that as we as an administrative team continue to view the indiana department of health webinars last week's version they called a special one after the cdc made their adjustments to quarantine and isolation periods they didn't bring up the idea of public k-12 schools in indiana needing to transition to e-learning that did not come up in their entire presentation as i've said many times to constituents via email and on phone calls our on ongoing focus has been hospitalization because we don't want to see you know hospitals have to choose who to provide care to but when hospitalization or hospital capacity becomes a crisis is really up to the board of health to determine and share with us and then the other piece that we're going to study every day is our staffing levels which we have been providing the board with a list of those case counts that we get from our schools each and every day and so while you know we report to you when they're covet related we are also following flu and other things too because if we don't have staff we don't have staff and fortunately those cases have been good for us up to this point it's important to know that heading into tomorrow it looks like we have six or seven staff members who won't be able to be in attendance some of them will be coming back on wednesday some not until later and we can have some new cases as we sit here this evening we we won't know until tomorrow but the current reported cases do not demonstrate significant absences i think that's an important piece for us we can staff our buildings because if you go back to november of 2020 our problem was we couldn't and that's why we went to e-learning for a short period of time so our departments of health do monitor the data they talk about the capacity of hospitals we see reports from them some experts are indicating they think this new variant could be milder which wouldn't you know mean fewer people who actually test positive have to be hospitalized or need oxygen or serious care on the other hand many experts and many parents who have mailed emailed me yesterday especially and today have indicated they think it's only a matter of time before the cases create staffing issues for us and hospital crises in terms of available icu beds and other places to care for seriously ill people and that could be true too uh we also have experts on the national level sharing that you know it may not get as bad in this wave given the vaccine availability um and what what you hear from so many of the people is there's a cost to having students stay home too um in terms of anxiety and stress and psychological impacts and we we know from our own experience that many students aren't nearly as well engaged while at home and that creates a problem with the amount of content that they master we've said from the beginning our objective is to try to make it as as normal as possible it's not normal and we acknowledge that and we respect people who don't agree with the decision but we're just trying to help people understand you know sort of where we are and as with other decisions that we've made um related to the pandemic thus far we're forced to make far than you know they're not perfect choices um out of really pretty imperfect options and so we ask for people to to trust that it's not for lack of paying attention or listening or talking to state experts to which we come up with something but we know that it's not going to please all parties at all times so we're going to continue to pay close attention to local and regional data we will con you know we're willing to transition to e-learning if it's necessary but we're really doing our best and we are really committed to try to limit the amount of time that we spend in a virtual environment we want to spend as many days as we possibly can with in-person instruction and so with that i'd open it up to anything that the board wants to say you've already seen my statement earlier which included some of what i just said but i wanted to share a little bit more for anybody who hadn't seen the statement or wants to know where we're coming from is there any discussion or questions from the board hearing none thank you so we'll move on to our director of human personnel resources mrs mucha thank you very much we are recommending that the following personnel be approved we have a motion by mrs kelly second second by mr marshall any discussion from the board hearing none mr marshall aye ms kelly aye dr meddlin aye dr malcolm thank you very much we're fortunate tonight here to have some reports from our middle school athletic and representing our middle school is lisa from grimmer and she's going to give us the details for all three of the schools because she's just that lucky good evening i'm lisa from grimmer i'm representing all three of us clark keller and grimmer tonight uh this is the three of us up here clark we'll start with them football those are your numbers that we had they had for football and volleyball and cross country i don't think they had much change on their coaching staff it was pretty much the same people cross country the boys conference record was four and two the girls got conference champs for six and the o football they had conference champs with bremer four-and-oh and then volleyball they were six and oh for the seventh grade and four and two for the eighth grade their finances for the fall and then pictures of their fall athletes grimmer those are my numbers this year um i had an 8th grade volleyball coach i had to hire for this year because i forgot what happened to her huh oh our eighth grade coach became a dean that's what happened to her okay sorry about that just a lapse our recognition seventh grade volleyball was five and one so it's eighth grade volleyball for conference um boys and girls track were about pretty middle to the road three and three and two and four oh we had macy thompson who broke our school record twice this season once in conference of me and she also had the fourth in all conference my income for the fall and expenses to some upcoming purchases uh we're going to be looking we purchased new volleyball uniforms that was that time to do for this year and then i'm going to be looking at getting boys and girls basketball uniforms updated for next year and i only have my two pictures because i didn't get my cross-country ones yet all right this is kayla's their coaching staff and again there's very rarely changes in their numbers over to the right for their teams conference boys five and two it looks like for the season five and one conference girls was four and two in the conference football six and one and if you can read that that's their income and expenses for the year or for the fall i'm sorry and then their team pictures are cross country volleyball and football i'm assuming there we go questions about fall all right i get to do one more hang on all right this one's going to be about our winner basically wrestling and boys basketball same side there are numbers this year for clark and i think jake felton is a newer boys basketball coach for my maybe last year to two years for them uh their highlights conference they were five and one for seventh grade boy 8th grade boys is 3-3 and they didn't do so well with wrestling they went to athletic income and fees expenses pictures oh yeah we got cheerleading on with the winter gut winter ones too uh mine went for athletics we pretty much you made the team so my numbers are that's who tried out and they made the team and we did up the numbers this year with boys wrestling that was nice i did have to get a couple new uh coaches this year one for seventh grade was jeff mysek my new one and then some of my old students jack bozell jared lopez and cameron philadel they were my eighth grade coaches recognitions uh conference record for seventh grade was not so well with my small numbers one and five eighth grade is four and two they did we had a conference tournament right before christmas break and those eighth graders played so hard they had few numbers that day and they went to the semifinals and lost by like a couple points they fought pretty hard and then just the expenses for the income and the expenses for during wrestling and pictures well i don't think did i label them no i didn't all right this would be kaler's their coaches and their numbers and the conference let's see eighth graders three and three their seventh grade yeah they got first in the conference tournament that's what i was thinking they did and they were five-one-one in the conference wrestling looks like they're 6-0 for the conference in first in conference it looks like and then their income and expenses throughout the wrestling and boys basketball and pictures and i do know i talked with their coach their seventh grade coaches their first year that won the conference tournament he was pretty pretty excited about that and then they're wrestling and cheerleaders all right that was winner any questions i've got one sure could you back up the clark boys pictures oh did i go too fast of the team pictures sure the boys basketball no that's oh there it is down there the wrestling wrestling the one boy in the back row i didn't realize it was wrestling is he tall compared to the guys in the back row yes um well he's probably i'm just looking at the guys in the back row of the basketball yeah he's probably about average height for whatever grade level he is because the other guys are pretty tall you can tell by the hoop and they're all sitting at that free throw line and the back row the other two they're they're hitting that hoop where he's not quite hitting the hoop it just it just struck my eye thank you okay you're welcome thank you did a great job for all three schools appreciate it and now we have the high school um chris enyard he is um it's not on the screen so you can sit up there thank you good evening edustation you have a packet dr malcolm they have a packet for you that will be at the front desk for you on the first page you have our total numbers in the fall girls we had 125 boys 236 for a total of 361 fall athletes of those 361 140 of those were considered scholar athletes which means they had a 366 gpa or higher for all 38.8 percent so while we while their expectations as far as practice and time commitment is there obviously there this is this went up almost a percent from last year so their their excellence in the in the classroom as after all their students first and athletes second is still maintained at a high level on the next page you have our doonlan athletic conference standings for the air girls finished cross country finished fourth golf second soccer was fourth and volleyball tied for fourth on the boys side cross country was fourth football was seventh soccer boys soccer was a three-way tie for first place and tennis was third place in the conference our post-season results girls cross country were sectional and regional champions and advanced to the semi-state girls golf were second sectional and qualified for the regional girls soccer lost in the sectional semifinals and girls volleyball also lost in the sectional semifinals boys cross country were sectional champions and advanced to the semi-states football lost in sectionals our boys soccer lost in the sectional championship and our boys tennis locks lost in the sectional semifinals as a team but in tennis when you loses a team if you're the number one individual or number one pairs team doubles team you can advance as an individual after your sectional end so david spriggs was our number one individual he won ended up winning the sectional and then lost in the regional at laporte i mean he he goes down his the career wins record as a as a singles player here at lake central and he had a great career on the next page is our get as our income in my seven years at lake central this is the highest fall total as as far as total income especially in gay receipts so our gay receipts were at one hundred and one thousand dollars five hundred or one hundred one thousand five hundred and eighty seven dollars football made up 69 537 of that soccer was at 19 390 and volleyball was at 12 660.

advertisement again with kovid we we we pause our advertisement we have one sponsor and patilla and crane who still wants or continues with that we plan on amping this up next year our advertisement is usually between 30 and 40 thousand dollars a year but for the last two years we've posited with kovitt and the stress on the on the economy in our area our fault team fundraisers and fees were at eighty six thousand four hundred ninety one dollars and thirty six cents concessions was at twelve thousand four hundred sixty five dollars and we canceled the golf outing again this year in the one year that we did how was it how we raised twenty three thousand dollars and covered half of that sixty dollar uh pay to play fee that we charge here at lake central for a total income in the fall of eighty three dollars 224 thirty six cents our fall expenses game workers and officials was thirty four thousand three hundred ninety three dollars and sixty four cents field equipment and facility maintenance it was 62 682.40 the majority of those purchases again last year i think in the fall we had an income of shy of ninety thousand dollars and uh expect we obviously when our expenses or our income falls so to our expenses so this year we had a lot of makeup to do in a lot of the programs to catch up with the equipment and needs of the program so equipment and team gear and fees was at fifty one thousand three hundred and six dollars and sixty seven cents training room and weight room costs were eleven thousand nine hundred and seventy cents uh the corporation transportation fee of thirty dollars is now paid on skyward so it goes directly to the corporation concessions expenses i actually outdid our income at twelve thousand nine hundred forty dollars and sixty two cents um and then miscellaneous this is our hospitality room flowers office needs certificates awards plaques and all everything encompasses that was at seventeen thousand eight hundred twenty eight dollars and fourteen cents for a total expenses this fall of one hundred ninety one thousand fifty two dollars and seventeen cents so we always try to whatever we bring in we try to put back right into the program that is our fall seasons in a nutshell are there any questions um yeah we lost you janice can you hear me yes yes okay well mr and you what is almost clean for elderly people getting in games can you understand me first of all okay i think i got you so yeah do do they have an option besides that link in other words can they pay cash electronically so so elderly in the community if their senior citizen can get if they live in the school district they can come into athletic office they can get a senior citizen pass for two dollars one-time fee face for the cost of the car and that gets them in every home contest outside of tournaments for the duration of however long they want to come oh really yeah so the the only caveat is that they have to live within the district lines correct right and then and then other elderly people that may be coming in to see their granddaughter their grandson uh what are policies for them we are so our gates are cashless along with crown point chesterton and laporte have all went cashless um so we take credit card card at the gate you can pass we purchase it in advance for big events like when we hosted the girls game against crown point when we know we're going to pick up a lot of a lot of fans and a lot of people outside of the district that might not or our opponent that may not have that information we have a cash box there available at select events as well okay all right and then one other question what is the policy for leaving during the middle of a game students no but adults yes correct depends on the event so we have football we don't allow any pass outs during the game coming or going without escort by our by our security the other events were a little more uh lacks in it but we encourage you you keep your body ticket to watch a game um that's what you're there to do unless you're just running out to your car to grab something there's really no reason to leave once you've entered the event if you're there to watch it well yeah i think these were parents that had to run home help another another uh son or daughter at home um and they were not allowed to enter back into their own game so i just had a question of that i don't think that's ever been the case okay of not allowing somebody back into an event even if they did leave if it's an adult right okay thank you chris chris i just want to make an observation in general during the girls season there was one of the most competitive games i've been fortunate enough to be at that's where our girls played crown point at this point crown point was the number one team in the state our jv game went to overtime we won that game in overtime the varsity game went to overtime unfortunately we lost by three points but it was quality basketball and i encourage anyone or everyone to come out and support lake central athletics yeah our girls basketball team is currently raped number 10 in the state correct they're having a very nice year and that game came down to make a free throw but it was a very competitive game and a fun environment to be a part of unfortunately they only made 3 out of 15 free throws at the end which does not win games for you but in defense of them they're young a lot of freshmen and sophomores so the future's before us thank you thank you and and and chris they did well at the um holiday tournament also didn't they over towards manchester united yeah they they went to portage and won that tournament in that tournament right and adding on to what mr marshall said if you weren't attending this at the anchorage boys basketball game that was just a spirit-filled gym uh fortunately lake central have had a very easy victory but it was very nice to see all the young kids and attendants and the adults so we're coming back it looks like thank you thank you all right we'll move on to our direct director of secondary education mrs castaneda thank you and the revised copies of the board packet that you received this evening for my first item i am seeking your approval for the professional leave request motion to approve we have a motion by mrs kelly second second by dr meddling any discussion hearing none mr marshall aye ms kelly aye dr madeline aye dr malcolm um i do not have the changes that i will obtain all right and i am an eye also so motion passes thank you and for my second item i'm seeing your approval for the revised field trip request that you received this evening move to approve the field trip request we have a motion by dr medlin second second by mrs kelly any discussion hearing none mr marshall aye ms kelly aye dr medlin aye dr malcolm i could not understand why there changes they documented this request uh it was a field trip request but is it it is is it a change from what was yes oh it was a revision as well so yeah you won't have that in front of you okay all right and i am an eye so the motion passes thank you move on to our director of student services mrs gramala thank you my first item tonight is to just review the information that was in your board packet regarding our annual student count for our students with disabilities you will see i'm not going to go through it page by page but you'll see we had a large increase in what we call our apc funding so those are the additional dollars we receive for students with disabilities overall we only had an increase of 11 students however we did have a per student funding increase in three of the four areas um so we have four different groups that we receive they break our students up into so that's great news and thanks to our state legislature for understanding that the dollars we receive don't even come close to what we're spending on students so we appreciate that increase this is our largest overall number of students since 2013 so that was sort of the first year i started tracking this so our total student population of students with disabilities is the highest it's been since then so then the second part of that is just looking at every year the department of ed sort of reviews our special education programming um and looks at two different things for us so our compliance and reporting so that's are we following the rules and are we reporting data how we're supposed to and when we're supposed to and then they also look at our outcomes for students so our overall rating was meets requirements which it has been the past several years we did drop from a level one to a level two and there were a couple different reasons for that so with our compliance we every four years were monitored on our transition ieps and those are the ieps we write to help students plan for their time after high school and we had an issue with compliance on those meaning as the department of ed they pull 10 of our ieps and review them they had issues with the goals we were writing for students so we dropped on our rating for that because of that we've already retrained our teachers we did some preemptive training knowing we were going to be monitored and then those teachers who whose ieps were pulled have been retrained and we've corrected those ieps so we've addressed that issue we also are being told we had an issue with reporting i've talked with teresa scherzinger about that she doesn't agree that there was an issue with reporting and unfortunately with the turnover at the department of ed i've asked the question four or five times now and i haven't gotten an answer so i'm asking for clarification on what they're saying the issue is and i've not gotten a response so that's a little problematic and i'm seeing that i work with several different grants and different student populations and there seem to be a lot of holes at the department of ed right now so it's very difficult to get responses you know the second part of that as far as our results so they look at our outcomes for students with disabilities i don't think it was any surprise to anyone that students with disabilities did not fare well with all the upheaval we've had during the last two school years so we had many of the same problems with our students with disabilities that we've seen with our general ed population i learned scores dropped our iread 3 proficiency is still high but it decreased from what it had in the past and then another large impact we had were our eye sprout eye sprout results which is our assessment we use for our students in preschool we had a large number of preschool students choose e-learning we were told by the department of ed we still had to assess those students so knowing what anybody knows about preschool not attending is not going to be as effective as attending so we did see less progress in those students also so definitely some things for us to work on overall we're still like i said in that meets requirements area but we are certainly feeling the effects of two school years of uncertainty and kids in and out of school so that is that information any questions about that okay and so for some happier news we have two schools who have earned the special olympics unified champions banner and those are 43 elementary schools in indiana are in that banner and we have two of them here within lake central we did hit a little bit of a pause on our special olympics activities at the elementary level due to covid so the banners were actually earned through the 19 through 21 school year so they instead of an annual banner they kind of combined some years but to earn the banners our schools had to raise money for special olympics so it was a minimum of 250 our schools raised more than that and also participate in inclusive activities throughout the school year so back in the good old days pre-covered we were able to hold our unified game day we haven't been able to do that since however our schools have done individual school activities we just haven't been able to do it on a district scale so this is just one of the many ways that lake central sort of shows how we value the diversity in our student population and also how we continue to strive to be more inclusive for all students so i am very happy to introduce from craftsman we'll start with you guys we have janet j.o devin moore and cassie kaufman those are three of our teachers from [Applause] so they organized the activities they did the fundraising and got the students involved and i think this is soon i do i want to take that picture that's granola yes all right i can only see part of the sign oh no you guys just back up just a little bit two steps back there we go perfect let's move your smile thank you [Applause] and congratulations from home [Applause] and can you just hold up here and just there we go perfect thank you ladies congratulations thank you so with that we'll move on to our director of business services mr james thank you good evening good evening um the first time was just to give the board an update on our 2021 tax collections um all governmental units in the county received their tax money on december 22nd this year and we had a collection rate of 98.95 percent of the taxes that were levy that is um so in essence 99 so we want to thank our taxpayers uh for paying their taxes and all the homeowners not only us but all the cities and towns and the libraries are dependent on that money in order to operate so that collection rate is right on par with where we have been for ever since i've been here we have a good collection right here in the district so um any questions on that okay and then my next item is just to seek your approval for the donations that were in your board packet motion to approve we have a motion by mrs kelly second by dr medlin any discussion hearing none mr marshall aye ms kelly aye dr meddling aye dr malco hi and i am an ielts motion passes thank you very much thank you we'll move on to our public comments we only have one this evening and i just want to remind that person that we we give you three minutes to speak and with that we will have daniel peterson if you could please state your name and address when you get to the microphone please my name is daniel peterson my address is sherwood lake drive in cherryville indiana thank you um reason i'm coming for you tonight i am the commander of the st john memorial vfw post 717 i'm also the junior vice commander for district one of the department of indiana veterans of foreign wars here with my comrade timothy howard veteran of the beirut conflict he is a past commander of the vfw here in town he is also passed depart past district commander of district 1 and here in lake county reason i'm here to express gratitude to the biblical student council and the interact club of the lake central high school these students unsolicited by us presented happy veterans day merry christmas and happy holiday cards to the saint john memorial vfw post 717 we distributed these cars to veterans in our communities that cannot leave their homes haven't been able to for some of these individuals have been homebound for many years uh the leftover ones we took down to the indiana home for veterans down there by lafayette these cards brought cheer tears expression of gratitude to everyone that received them uh if i can take the liberty of expounding a wee bit on the significance of what these students did and their exemplary exemplify patriotism a lot of these uh veterans that received them are veterans of the war in vietnam they were not welcomed home they did not receive many think expressions of gratitude and they all expressed that finally they get it and it was greatly appreciated so on the behalf of st john memorial post 717 district one department of indiana and the indiana veterans home i'd like to thank your students for this and i hope the school board can help us and continue to recognize the exemplary patriotism these students demonstrated thank you [Applause] speechless wow mrs cause i can i add something yes um i don't think that she will find another school corporation as patriotic as lake central throughout all the schools there's a great support for our veterans and then dr bradford that leaves me with your question is the lobby in the high school with the uh the veteran packs i believe she was asking if the veterans wall and the high school has the plaques have made it onto that wall that mr begley previously had started i'll have to look into that i'm not sure thank you all right with that we'll move on to our board comments and considerations of future agenda items we'll start with mr marshall i have no particular comments i'd like to personally thank the gentleman that stopped this evening from the vfw i personally had two brothers serve in the vietnam conflict i myself am not a veteran but i respect to the thousandth degree what they do for us thank you gentlemen for coming thank you mrs kelly i'd just like to welcome back our students and staff and best wishes for a successful second semester great thank you dr madeline i i just want to say i know this is a very difficult time for students and for teachers and for administration and we're dealing with you know it's ongoing difficult covid um i don't know it's it's it's been difficult and i just appreciate everything everyone's doing to work together as a team thank you dr malcolm yes um just wish to everybody faculty students staff parents administration bus drivers everybody for a great home twenty through thank you and i also just was going to wish everyone a welcome back and uh wish them a successful second semester and a great start to the third quarter and with that we'll move on to our board calendar future activities dr veraco yeah thank you our next meeting is not two weeks from tonight it is on the 18th tuesday the 18th here at 7pm and as i mentioned earlier we'll continue to keep the community and the board posted on how we're doing with our cases and our other data we collect from our regional health people thank you thank you with that do we have a motion for adjournment motion to adjourn a motion for adjournment second second second by dr medlin uh with all in favor

of you have joined us here in the boardroom and those who are on live stream this evening today is tuesday january 4th 2022 this is a special organizational meeting of the gilbert public schools governing board and then we will convene a brief board business meeting as prescribed under the agenda special organizational meeting will be to elect officers for the governing board and to set appropriate calendar dates etc for each of our meetings and meeting times so with that we'll call this meeting to order and we will ask mrs wilson to please call the roll dr charles santa cruz here miss laurie wood here miss sheila eugetti here miss jill humphries here mr bill parker here mr president all board members are present you have a quorum thank you mrs wilson our first order of business tonight is to nominate an elect a board president and a board clerk and as we move through i will preside over the nominations relative to board president then i will relinquish my role uh to the new board president uh board president often often always acts as the leader of the governing board and cooperates and coordinates with the superintendent to set the agenda and presides over all governing board meetings also is in many respects the official face of the governing board for the district all five members have an equal vote all five members are equally important as board members this evening we will call for nominations i will read or request nominations three times as prescribed in our rules this will be the first call for board nomination for president is there a nomination dr santa cruz i would like to to nominate lori wood as the board president for the 2223 right thank you mr eugenie i will call for a second nomination for board president i will call for a third nomination for board president seeing that there are no additional nominations it has been stated and the nomination has been set forward for ms laurie wood to be president of the gilbert public schools governing board all those in favor please signify by saying i i those opposed the same congratulations miss wood dr santa cruz may i have a point before you do something point of order whatever it's called point of personal privilege yes that's it yes you may i i would like to say that um your leadership over the last two years has been beyond anything that that we can even thank you for it's been a tumultuous time everywhere in this country um we've experienced it here in gilbert and at every every turn and everything that has happened you have handled it not only professionally but with compassion and empathy and respect to our community giving everyone a voice at every time and always always being respectful to them and i can't even imagine having had anybody different during these last two years and i i i'm only speaking for myself but i see some nods so thank you dr santa cruz thank you mr eugetti for your kindness and [Applause] i will now defer and relinquish the seat to miss wood all right thank you we will continue now with the the nomination of the board clerk the role of the board clerk is to oversee the note-taking and to fill in if the president is not available um i will make three calls for the nominations of a board clerk i will begin right now by asking for a nomination is there a nomination for a board clerk mrs wood i would like to nominate myself jill humphries for board clerk thank you i will ask for a second call for nominations i would like to nominate sheila eugetti for board clerk so we have two nominations at hand i will have i'll make a third call now for nominations for board clerk all right seeing none others we will call for a vote for the first nomination of jill humphries as board clerk all those in favor of jill humphries as board clerk please say aye aye those not in favor please say nay nay i will call for a motion for the second nomination as board clerk all those in favor of miss sheila eugetti as board clerk please say aye hi those not in favor please say nay okay it looks that we will have ms sheila eugetti as the board clerk okay continuing with this special meeting we will move now to 3.01 times of meetings dr mccord did you have information for us thank you madam president governing board members traditionally we have set tuesdays as our board meeting days at 6 00 pm i think that has worked out well but this is the time when if we need to adjust it we can but i think we've we've made some adjustments in the past and i think it's worked out fairly well but i guess we all have to show up one way or the other so whatever you guys want to do on this one keep it the same i think the community is um in concert with what we currently do and so making that adjustment is i don't know if it's warranted or not but at the same time consistency is always good especially in a time like this okay so i believe i need a motion before we can discuss it yes i move that we continue our meeting times as we have done during the 2012 school year okay thank you dr santa cruz is our second second thank you mr parker it's been moved and seconded that we keep our meetings at the same time which is our tuesday night meetings are at 6 00 p.m and our policy meetings on the tuesdays in between are at is at 11 30.

yes that is correct is that correct that is correct 11 30 okay it's been moved and seconded is there any discussion just for clarification that would be times and dates okay you would keep it the same times and dates it's we have it published correct gabby which days are they the second and last tuesdays of each month depending on holidays and whatnot but in a typical month it's the second and last tuesday of the month all right thank you so again the we've had that motion moved and seconded is there any further discussion okay seeing no further discussion i would call for the vote all those in favor of keeping our meeting times the same as they've been this this past year please vote i any opposed please say in the same okay that motion has passed five zero thank you board members we are now at item number 3.02 review review and approval of rules of order we've each had a chance to look at those but dr mccord did you have anything you'd like to share uh no like i said you you all have a copy of policy bedd which uh describes our rules of order for board meetings so there's any questions or clarifications please ask those thank you dr mccord is there a motion i move that we approve the rules of order as currently uh constituted second thank you mr humphries thank you mr eugetti it's been moved and seconded that we approve the rules of order as currently constituted in bedd is there any discussion all right i see there's no discussion on this i will call for the vote all those in favor of approving the motion is stated please say aye aye any opposed please say in the same all right the motion has passed five zero that we will continue to approve the rules of order from bedd thank you board members and finally we have 3.03 board appointments to various committees dr mccord did you have anything or did you want me to no um what i will do is i will just go through and just let everybody know not that you don't know but for the audience as well what committee is assigned to which board member the gilbert education foundation mrs jill humphries city of mesa liaison mrs laurie wood the town of gilbert liaison is currently vacant the finance slash audit committee is mr bill parker insurance trust representative is mrs sheila eugetti legislative representative is dr charles santa cruz we also have the policy committee which is a committee of the whole and the enrollment management committee which is a committee of the whole as well dr dr mccord i have a question for you the liaison with the town of gilbert and the city of mesa um could you or maybe somebody give us a little bit of background in terms of the time and involved in that and what you know what requirements are or what needs to be done i know this is what you've been with mesa correct you want to talk about mesa i have i i what i have done is reached out to um councilman kevin thompson who is over that area of mesa that's in our school district and just tried to talk with him we've had different lunch appointments just trying to keep up on the issues that might be of concern with us in concert with them and mesa is is they're like wards or uh precincts or whatever so they they have just that one area where in gilbert it's it's at large so gilbert has a liaison the town of gilbert has a liaison is that for mr september i believe it is it's got september and so has he been meeting with you is that how it's been working no he hasn't as of late um he's fairly new to the council but he and i have had conversations um it's it's a little bit different with gilbert because just a proximity right right so um so anytime any councilmember needs anything they'll call me up or the town manager and we'll have conversations so a little bit different for me thank you and i think it could be whatever you wanted it to be as far as in that way okay thank you thank you dr mccord thank you for the question so i believe we'll just can we just start and ask i think everyone's done a really good job in serving what they've served on this year and i appreciate all the work is there does someone have preferences of what they would like to serve going forward um i i have served with the gilbert education foundation for two years so i think it's really important to mix it up and take a different role so if someone else is open to that position i'd be happy to do something else okay thank you ms wood yes i know that miss humphries has expressed an interest and passed on the legislative end of our committee work and i'd be happy to pick up the town of gilbert liaison if miss humphreys would like to occupy the liaison for i would be happy to do that dr santa cruz that would be fine thank you both we just barely approved mr bill parker to be a member of the audit committee would you like to stay in that role this year mr parker you'd be fine with that okay miss you jetty i would really like to i would like to stay on the insurance dress since i've been on it at some point other than for five years since like 1985.

um and it's it's a there's a lot even when you think you know a lot about it there's still a lot to learn so i would appreciate being able to stay on it that's great uh mrs wood would you be interested in doing gilbert education foundation and i'll take the town of mesa mesa sure i've done the gef before but i'm happy to do it again yeah that would be great okay so i'll read these off and and then we can discuss do we need an alternative for the legislation oh yes yes let's do a proven alternative so that we don't have to then we don't have to scramble at the last meeting okay is there anybody who'd be willing to be an alternative at the legislative meeting or in other in any other ways that we would need it well it so this this position uh it's helpful to attend the county meeting because that's where we vote for the the county director it's helpful to attend the annual conference because that's where we vote for the executive officers for asba and also the delegate assembly it's usually the saturday of the legal conference so the first saturday in september those are the three and i think there are additional things that can be done and that i believe you said on the committee once didn't you dr santa cruz the committee of asba that puts together them yes okay so you know there's additional responsibilities if if that comes yeah but this would be an all the alternate yes it would as well so if there's someone at this time who would be willing to be the alternate otherwise we can do it like we did this year and address it in november again you can list me as the alternate if you'd like okay if that's okay with everyone that would be great thank you dr santa cruz okay so let me read back what i have and then we will do we need to i would just vote just to you just take a vote okay actually we don't need to vote we can just make this decision among ourselves so there's no need for a vote well i'd like to vote anyways so i'll read these back and then we'll we'll vote on it if that's okay with everybody okay so we have the legislative representative mrs jill humphries and the alternate dr santa cruz the town of gilbert liaison dr santa cruz the city of mesa liaison mrs jill humphries the gef liaison lori wood the insurance trust representative mrs eugetti and the audit committee mr bill parker said okay okay all in favor please say aye any opposed with the same all right so that that will be how we serve this year thank you everyone for being willing to serve and we will have your reports each month if you have something to share with us about that okay at this time we will adjourn the special organizational meeting is there a motion move second thank you dr santa cruz and miss you jetty is there any discussion all right we will vote to adjourn the special organizational meeting all in favor please say aye aye any opposed okay this meeting is adjourned the special organizational meeting is adjourned 5-0 we will now begin our brief board business meeting um we're down to agenda item 5.01 i'd like to call this meeting to order and i'd like to ask mrs wilson for a roll call please ms laurie wood here dr charles santa cruz here miss jill humphries here michela eugetti here mr bill parker here madam president all board members are present you have a quorum thank you we will begin with item 6.01 the approval of consent agenda items um is there a motion i move that we approve the consent agenda items as presented thank you miss you jetty is there a second it's not good thank you mr parker it's been moved and seconded that we approve the consent agenda items as listed i'd like to ask for a vote all those in favor aye i forgot to say i myself any opposed thank you that will pass 5-0 okay and that takes us to 7.01 adjournment unless i missed something nope okay um i guess i'd like to call for an adjournment of this meeting is there a motion so moved thank you mr jenny i mean miss humphries is our second second thank you mr jetty it's been moved and seconded that we adjourn our this governing board meeting brief governing board business meeting all those in favor please say aye aye aye any opposed all right that will conclude our meeting tonight congratulations on doing it in 20 minutes we expect that every meeting oh goodness

gonna move on to approval of the minutes and our december uh retreat 2021 minutes um we'll we will go over those at the next uh meeting so we are going to delay the approval of the december minutes don't we need to vote on the agenda we do need to vote on the agenda let's go ahead and vote on the agenda so um everyone that would like to move forward please raise your hand thank you for bearing with me as i get used to used to running these meetings um and thank you to john for the robert's rules um because that is helping quite a bit um all right so uh we will move on to old business i'll make a motion to approve the minutes from the december meeting okay meeting yep um so old business we wanted to formally announce the uh golden paintbrush award winners i'm sure all of you have seen the wonderful work venita and the communications department has done on putting the web page together for the golden paintbrush award winners but i will also list them here so that is the ann arbor arts center for the ann arbor arts center mural projects and the art box program so they were um awarded for two amazing projects they completed this year um david zinn's lovely singing in the rain mural um the youth art month installations with accordance with the ann arbor public schools some wonderful work there and then the city of ann arbor's i voted stickers so those are our golden paintbrush 2021 winners and i think then we are ready to move on to um new business can i ask a quick question before we do that um the next step with the golden paintbrush is for it to go to city council for them to like do the give get the awards do we have any everything that's happening thank you oh and yes craig i'll jump in um council has gone back to in-person meetings so we have reached out to sarah higgins to see how council will do that because it's going to have to be a no contact uh type of event right now the meetings are titled uh council's in the chamber staff is online some residents are in the chamber some residents are online so we quite haven't figured out the mechanics of how you're going to do the introduction and presentation thank you so much craig and sophie sophie you're on mute okay um yes i was going to say we have one more award to come as well which will be the people's choice award so um hopefully that's going to be up on the the same page with the announcements inviting people to choose their their favorite and so we have a little time before the council will be asked to to make those awards um so that's coming very soon and will be will be in addition an additional award and we're excited to be able to do an on-site presentation um of the awards and uh thank you veneta for coordinating that our tile awards are ready to go and so we just await a date to present them at this point um does anyone else have any questions uh regarding the golden paintbrush award before moving on all right fantastic then uh we can move on to um new business uh which is um congratulations to uh jamal as our new vice chair and i'm moving into the chair role um and i just want to say a huge thank you to allison um for her service as chair she is um just wonderful to work with um so organized and has really uh on the time i've been on this commission been such a wonderful leader and very generous with your advice and resources john as well thank you so much for for your work on the leadership nominations committee um and jamal if you would like to say anything please uh please take the floor sure thanks sarah um yeah i'm excited to get acquainted with this role and learn a lot john did a great job of explaining a lot of the uh responsibilities to me and uh yeah thank you allison for helping us get the annual plan together super helpful with that so just excited and thank you for the opportunity allison if you would like to say anything um their role as as well i'm not going anywhere i'll still be around um you know i'm really excited about the new leadership though i think you guys are going to be phenomenal um and just thanks for all the support all you have given me over the past couple years while i've been chair and looking forward to what you guys can accomplish as leaders john uh i would just like to also thank allison uh she's been on this uh board uh she's been in the position of chair for three years and under her tenure uh uh the commission has moved forward in uh very positive dramatic ways uh we really have diversified under her tenure uh we've also sought out and received some some money a grant um and i think it's due to her leadership um and uh and i appreciate it and i think that um we've talked about uh something official kind of a letter of appreciation coming from the entire uh commission and uh if that's at all possible uh i think this would be an excellent time to uh to move that forward uh that to recognize uh allison's leadership uh formally so uh thank you very much allison i'm glad you're still with us and gonna stay hopefully for several years but uh so i i defer to our chair and vice chair we've talked about it uh if there's a way that that i could help in any way i'm more than happy to uh but i think we should uh formalize this uh this change of leadership in a way that shows our appreciation for for allison's hard work i think that is a fabulous idea john and that is definitely something that we will discuss in uh in the coming months to um celebrate uh allison and her amazing stewardship um as chair and craig if the commission comes up with the verbiage they desire i will speak on behalf of anita that we can put it on city letterhead and make it official fantastic thank you craig and thank you veneta um all right does anyone have um anything else they would like to add to new business tonight all right then i think we are ready to move on to a report from staff which i believe we we do not have a report from staff tonight so unless that's changed what is the annual plan review under new business um the annual plan uh we completed um earlier this afternoon and we will be sending that out um to review so i will be adding um everyone on the commission your email addresses to review what uh jamal and i put together with the help of allison and in a conversation with vanita as well earlier this afternoon we will be looking to present that in our february meeting to council sophie hey um yeah does the annual plan include the suggestions we were all asked to come up with for ideas for the future or is that a separate thing um we have added um most of our goals um put together during our retreat um allison took some great notes that we've been working off of um some of our goals um were you know agreed upon by multiple commission members um other goals were you know given by individuals so at this point um and something once we you know move that uh forward most likely tomorrow you will all get um you know access to edit that document um we want to really look forward uh to those goals and make sure that um you know it's more than just um one person on a working group that has set that goal that that's something that you know we agree upon um as a group so uh you know once once we have that editing power which will be given to you tomorrow um then we will be able to move forward and uh you know narrow or expand upon those goals okay uh any other questions um about the annual plan allison i think i failed to mention to you guys uh when we talked about the plan that as part of the plan uh the cip list is supposed to go with it i know that linkedin is our last cip list that got approved um but david and i met today as a cip group and so there's going to be new things that will go on that and so that should be part of this uh report [Music] absolutely i put in a placeholder um uh you know of what we'd like to do for uh 2022 so once we have that document we will certainly link to that and i think um you know having this ready to present to counsel um you know in february that gives us a little more time to make sure that we've put everything together um including that cip plan which is a very important part of the entire plan and certainly of that working group all right anything else regarding annual plan questions comments concerns all right then i think we are ready to move on to the report from committees and we will continue with our cip working group capital improvement project working group um david do you have david or allison anything to add um about the cip work this uh this year um sure uh we got a new cip in mid-december um the committee met which is sarah and allison and myself uh talked about some options with it uh set up a meeting with deb which occurred today because she was on a pretty extended vacation because she had vacation time she needed to use up by the end of the year so um deb gosselin is the person who runs the cip with the the city so it has been very helpful in all these things so we met with her today we have a better sense of what we need to do we just need to get the three of us back together again and make a final plan to put together put in front of the commission thank you david i get his hand up i don't know i think there was a report from staff about this wtp project it looked like from the agenda i was just gonna say it stands as written so oh okay don't have to add anything thank you craig and allison um so we will move on to our outreach working group uh which includes sophie peggy and marionetta um anything to report sorry so if i think you're on mute sorry i always do that backwards speak first press the button afterwards um yes i think it's a little early but i i would like to to arrange a meeting with other members of the group or whoever would like to arrange a meeting because um i'm eager to get started with it anyone else marionetta or well peggy's not here marionetta did you have any thoughts about that no um i think uh some ideas came up at our last meeting kind of collectively um that i think uh would be good for for our outreach reach committee to talk about a little bit more we haven't met yet but i'm looking forward to working with peggy and so sophie i know um part of what had been what discussed was monument lab as an example um and i don't know if you saw sophie but the penny stamps lecture series just was present or their calendar was just put out and uh monument lab is supposed to be coming in march as part of their lecture series so maybe we can all go or virtually go or however they're doing it that'd be great an in-person or virtual field trip i like that well wonderful and um you know looking at the annual plan you know we've put some of those those goals that we discussed at the retreat for the outreach uh working group so it'll be great for marionetta peggy and sophie for for you to take a look at that and you know give us any edits on that that you think should be you know included in that plan for this working group which is new this year because it has absorbed a few of our other working groups so um you know there is uh onwards and upwards wonderful places to go with that all right so um i will move on then to the special projects working group uh which includes sophie peggy jamal and myself um i do believe you know most of what what we're doing right now is just completing the golden paintbrush award from 2021 which we've you know discussed a bit before um so you know vanita is working on getting our people's choice uh linked up on our webpage our observer ad is running um and we're working on getting those on-site award presentations together um and then of course we will move on to 2022's golden paintbrush award i think we've learned a lot over the past year of how to facilitate this award so i look forward to working with all of you um on you know making 2022's award uh you know submissions um you know call to the public all of that um you know the award presentation will make that really nice and smooth does anyone else have anything to add yeah not about the golden paintbrush but there was some talk about a city flag design being uh proposed and we might at some point perhaps ask glenn if she can ask the mayor if he still has that in mind i know he's a very busy man and um so probably it doesn't reach the top of his his agenda but uh if he's still interested then he doesn't have to say much just to kick start it i would say uh craig the the resolution has been drafted and presented to the mayor um we did send a reminder and i'm going to struggle as to how long ago it was done and have not heard so yes didn't count those hands the last i chatted he went uh getting ready for this meeting he said it's still on his mind so i can follow up and see when we might schedule having that come to vote thank you and i believe we had that um last year um under our youth outreach working group which again has been absorbed into the outreach working group but might be better suited to be under our special projects working group um so that's something we will definitely add to our annual plan goals under that specific group so we can move on to our communications working group which includes um alison marionetta david and myself um we have not met yet this year as it is still early um but uh you know we will review obviously our goals from the annual plan and move forward with that you know we just used some funds from our endowment to fund the ann arbor observer ad for the golden paintbrush award which is something that we talked about using those funds for last year we've done so successfully now um so we hope to see more of that type of action being taken in 2022 and if anyone else um has anything to add for the communications work group um that would be great no just similar to sophie i think we need to get a date on our calendar and meet and get some stuff rolling yep all right so um and we have our leadership working group uh which includes jamal and myself uh so you know our first act in our leadership working group has been to put together the annual plan again with a wonderful help from allison um which will be shared uh editing um powers um to everyone on the on the commission so we can take a look at that make sure we're all on the same page and uh you know forged forward in 2022 i do believe we still have an open spot um on our commission um to replace with santa young um who uh you know gave wonderful service um last year to the commission um so that is you know definitely something on our agenda um that we want to accomplish sooner rather than later for 2022.

and we're being live streamed okay good um go ahead i'd like to uh call the uh january 5th uh 2022 um meeting of the brookfield board of education to order um let's start by rising for the pledge of allegiance i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states and justice for all right we have a uh full complement of our board here tonight so uh we can go ahead and uh get going um is our student representative here just looking no all right we'll pass through that item um all right so next up is written correspondence okay um tatiana preston wrote regarding a brookfield craft center class debra cacase and joyce pacino wrote regarding kovites and quarantine marnie mcniff wrote regarding a climate counseling meeting elena loplaz wrote regarding a huckleberry library book nick schmidt wrote with questions for chairman belden joyce pacino wrote regarding in-person learning ben rachela wrote regarding books donna jordan wrote regarding adjustments for covid maria alessandro wrote regarding test kits and masks christina zimmerman wrote regarding current quote covid quarantine guidelines deborah ann wrote regarding the december 15th minutes irene korea wrote regarding the december 1st minutes and andy korea wrote regarding board and administration competency and integrity concerns and concerns with the 1221 board retreat okay thank you so much um so next is up is approval board minutes i'll move that the board approve the minutes from the regular meeting on december 15th second we have a motion and second any comments yeah i'd like to make a comment if that's possible um i just wanna you know make it very clear that the vote to temporary remove the huckleberry library book was not a vote to ban the book um in the minutes it perceives that way given the title so i just want to be clear you know for some individuals of the public and some individuals who are reporting to online sources that we voted on to remove it while it was under review um that no one is trying to ban the book and you know as a member of this board and as a parent and a member of this community i encourage parents to speak up and have a voice if they're concerned with the age appropriateness of a book that is in a library for seven eight and nine-year-olds i don't feel that this sets a dangerous precedent so let's you know encourage an open-minded communication and so joy in terms of the minutes themselves would you suggest that we add the word temporary yeah i'd like to make a motion to add the words add the heading to read you know while under review okay the the heading does read temporary removal but uh um and i would suggest that we also add the word temporary in the text because right now it says to approve the removal of a book from uh so let's make that a motion um so it's a motion to uh add the text uh while under review to the title of that section of the minutes and to uh add the word temporary before removal in the text of that section correct i'll second that motion okay and moved and seconded any discussion all in favor say show of hands and the opponent all right passes unanimously okay thank you and by the way just as an aside on that very point there was some confusion in one of the emails because the vote was to remove and we voted against removing so people were confused that of a two to five vote was somehow it sounded like we were voting to remove it instead of voting not to remove it temporarily and so i just for the public the vote in in in its effect was that we will keep the book on the shelves while we're reviewing it so for all the reasons we discussed it i mean um okay so next up oh with that with that adjustment all in favor of the uh the approval of the minutes and unanimous okay um okay next up is the superintendent's report dr barrel thank you mr golden um good evening everybody happy new year good to be back um i'd like to first uh before i start um thank um mrs labrochano for her service over the past three and a half years and wish her well in her new position in reading she is on a consent agenda tonight but i wanted to use this opportunity to thank her uh we appreciate her leadership uh all she has done in her commitment you see dean clapping there we're all giving a clap there for her um and uh and really thank her and wish her well um and let's have a nice uh next few weeks before she departs um i'm always saying not to put you on the spot if you want to say anything raise your hand otherwise you can stay on me it's up to you oh thank you so much it's it's definitely bittersweet i shared with my colleagues that you know we started as colleagues and now we leave as friends so um i've learned so much in brookfield and i just have so much gratitude for everything i've learned and that i'll take with me so thank you thanks melissa we'll miss you melissa and to that end i wanted to continue on the report with the update for the huckle harry huckleberry hill principal position we've had upwards of uh i think about 15 applications um we've had a nice turnout of those interviews are scheduled for uh monday january 10th and thursday in second round would be january 13th which is next thursday i want to thank dr ruby for her organization and leadership in helping and working with me getting things organized and coordinated and then certainly uh she'll be leading the uh the interview process with uh the makeup of that committee which is made of uh some administration board member uh parent several teachers uh from huckleberry and even one from grade five from from wisconsin so it's a nice cross-section of folks good representation um and uh we're excited to get moving on that and uh we'll let you know how that continues to progress um in addition to that it was important we talked about it at facility committee meeting tonight and a lot of people are interested in a particular very public facility project um and since there wasn't a facility committee report for this evening i just wanted to mention the wisconsin wall the winterization is essentially finished there's a one one more piece that needs to be tightened up prior to uh the end of next week we anticipated to be totally uh complete but it's essentially complete and i know mr renda the staff and the students are quite excited about that um in addition to that by january 21st we should have the specifications from the engineer uh so we could then uh get ready to put the bid together and get ready to see what the options might be for the entire project and get that totally restored transportation contract that's one we've been talking about at the finance committee meeting i just wanted to get it out there that it is out to bid as for a five-year contract typically and the bid opening is scheduled for january 14th and we've been going back and forth and i'm sure um rosa will share a little bit about that during finance committee reports you may share a little bit more uh in addition i wanted to just do some quick updates there are more um reminders of what's been sent out regarding covet specifically a covet update we all know we've seen a spike everybody's heard about it it's pretty much deleting and one of the only news stories uh going forward the last couple of weeks especially over the holiday recess a couple things we had to do over the recess athletics specifically we we shut down uh which was mostly practices we had a shutdown because there was just uh spread and infection everywhere going on uh so mr baldwin had to work on that and he did a nice job managing that with our parents and our athletes and our coaches um in addition to that over the break it was perfect timing for the entire nation the cdc came out with their updated guidance which put everybody to work uh especially over the uh the january new year weekend and we were working through to to really absorb understand and then be able to communicate out what we were doing with the new guidance on sunday this past sunday i put out update v as in victor v1 specific to quarantine isolation contact tracing and testing very specifically we talked about reduction in contact tracing reduction in isolation and quarantine times and a little bit about testing um and specifically i want to give a little update on testing i have to thank the emergency management team from the town they loaned us from their first supply uh 240 kits to make sure we had enough staff to staff our buildings and make sure we could test them we even handed some out on sunday later in the afternoon after the town distribution and then on monday and tuesday our shipment hadn't come in yet that's why uh the the town uh mrs carr lent those to us with chief purcell so what happened uh over uh yesterday is we did get our school delivery half of the delivery of tests from the state approximately 2500 for students and about 300 for staff and their different brands and we got direction on how to distribute those we don't know when our next allotment is coming but tomorrow we're going to do it today but we have the school closing tomorrow mr caldwell our facility director will be delivering um uh incremental distribution to each of the schools and we'll our nurses and our administrators will keep an eye on that and the students or staff who qualify to receive a test kit to bring home and do their testing are people who are either symptomatic or not have a known exposure so it's not for everybody to just have a as a just in case there has to be a reason and i always like to be emphatic about this none of our staff will be testing students that is to be given to the student or the parent and when they're either symptomatic or they've been exposed to to work work on at home we will not school staff will not be testing students that's the covet update oh and there is one more piece we are awaiting um some probably pretty soon we'll be receiving more cdc updates or guidance on the k-12 setting the guidance received over the vacation from cdc was actually general considered general population guidance it wasn't specific to k-12 schools so we are awaiting that guidance that may tweak some of the adjustments we've made in protocols this week um and certainly uh we continue to have daily uh principal uh either email communications um or actual uh meetings to go over these with the nurses as well so we can make sure we have everything um consistent and uniform and then cascade communications out to families and staff so that's my question one question for you on protocols is that does the ciac and the state have different protocols for athletes or so yeah so i can't quote every athletic protocol in terms of there's been some tweaks to the uh length of um return to play time and we're working on that dph was not in contact when they gave schools their information they did not they had they were hustling this past weekend they didn't give new information to ciad so we're working with the mid to late december ciac uh winter sports updates we expect some tweaks there too it's return to play versus quarantine or isolation that's where the difference comes in um and there's so you may have heard bob for return to play it used to be and we believe it's changing a total of almost 17 days away from play for students to return back quarantine time and then coming back not being able to be super physically active so what i've heard is that 17 days after the quarantine so yeah and and so to be very candid anything long it's very long and it would be um it wouldn't be appropriate for me to go into full detail because i just i don't have them in front of me and i don't know every little detail and nuance there um our ad and our nurses handle that uh however mark is waving he might have some information here he is mark you could wave in and dr sullivan has recently weighed in with mr baldwin so go ahead mark thank you yeah so you know to clarify it's great to have mark belanda back welcome back mark thank you thank you um you know so to clarify i mean the the big issue was the the 17 days bob you know as you said it was a long time um so the really the idea was ten days from um you know from that day zero of contact or connection it was ten days after that and then they wanted seven days um you know for additional and not just for um it was interesting because they're also putting that expectation for band and chorus and other things that involve the respiratory system and kids breathing hard and singing or perhaps using an instrument um so really and and john said it very well that you know there wasn't a lot of communication between dph ciac and what this new stuff looks like so currently what it looks like according to working with dr sullivan and steve baldwin so if a student that's positive and is asymptomatic after five days right they could return to school that's been our our policy given the new guidance um means they've returned to school they cannot yet return to athletics they have to sit out another five days for that ten full days they have to sit out then with a doctor's note or some confirmation or clearance from a doctor they can come back after that so that may be they may be out for just ten days total um back in school after five but out for another five because that's what athletics says right now it could be and then they go right back to playing if the doctor clears them they may be out for 11 they may be out for 12 but it really depends on what the medical person says so it's a little more flexible to some degree it's not that standard everybody's 17 days but um definitely for athletes that right now it's at least 10 days out and they can return um you know with a with a note so that's where we are at this point hard getting doctor's appointments these days so just saying so dr brill i have another question on the the quarantines i thought your message was very clear but i think i maybe either i am misunderstood or maybe there might be some misunderstanding in the community um are we still quarantining close contacts or because there's no contact tracing anymore so so essentially dr carter when he was advising uh superintendents and and health directors and so forth on yesterday morning he said if the school district uh goes with the option of not uh not contact tracing any longer you essentially don't have close contacts anymore that's basically what happens by default one of the things we are going back and forth on as a principal group and we're having some conversations um we're actually working with our nurses um i think they may have met actually this afternoon um one of the things we're talking about is during the lunch period where kids are closer and unmasked do we contact rates specifically at lunchtime because that's really the one place where we know we don't we don't have the coverage other than that we really won't be contact racing and we use the term routine the state used the term routine contact tracing and i included that in my update because as you know contact tracing became a routine for everything we we did and by pulling back on that um based upon what the advice is as well as our experience which we have had some uh this past fall that definitely most likely we had some in-school contact racing but lots of it um as we know when families know have happened during either travel type athletics or home activities or whatever it could be but in school we really weren't seeing quarantined uh healthy students who were quarantined actually coming down with positive cases so we're moving that at that direction so if we're not contact tracing rosa to sum it back up is then there really isn't close context so the one debate we're still having and we haven't made a final decision and that's why i asked for a few days for us to figure this out and again we're still waiting for some cdc guidance as well there's new k-12 guidance coming out which may change things from what i'm saying tonight is that lunch period and we we've gone back and forth the the four principals myself uh some of the other team or nurses making those considerations okay so all of the the emails that parents have been getting that says you know there's probably a kid in the class that's positive or something i mean all essentially nobody's quarantining vaccine vaccinated just correct exactly and if there is a parent that is concerned and wants to know that you know it was in x classroom or x grade level um and they they want to get more specific on if the person the infected person might have been close to their child they always can give a call to the school and the school could you know see how you know take a look to see how close the child might have been so was there a reason we stopped what's that is there a reason we stopped the contact tracing and the identification of close contact yeah because the the guidance is that we want to really focus on making sure our systematic children are getting tested we're focusing on them keeping students in school and the the resource deployment and the effort it takes of the administrative staff the nurses and other staff to do the contact race so that's that's really a big part of it and we want to keep the kids in school so that was the thought there and dr sullivan and dr garcia although admitting just like we do it could be more of a risk they thought following the guidance made sense okay and just keep your eye on it of course yeah so of course okay all right i'll move on from covet to uh another celebratory note um i sent uh we forwarded over to the to the board and dr ruby forwarded it to the staff uh we've tweeted out we're very proud of eric conklin our tech director who's on running this meeting tonight for us uh he was uh recognized and honored in the unsung heroes uh article in the news times so eric congratulations we want to make sure we acknowledge that and if you haven't seen the article already anybody who's watching please go on the news times and check it out eric you want to you want to say anything i see your mute is off i don't know if you would ask me no it was um thank you thank you for john for for mentioning it and um it was a very very well done honor it was an honor to be uh chosen as the unsung hero and um it's a pleasure to uh get to come in every day and work with the team in the group that uh that i get to work with and uh none of it's possible without the tech team um and none of it's possible without the um the support of um of everybody on this meeting um and beyond um so thank you you got it oh i love the term unsung hero so let's officially we're singing your praises here my friend so now you can be a sung hero good point there you go all right we're going to move on to the last piece um i wanted to mention i'm going to try to get to um the ptos and or the bhs booster club just to er those are formal meetings to engage with our families regarding the new school project and the budget uh we have two meetings scheduled i think we've got january we've got january and february scheduled already we're working on some of those other schedules um and as always i always have an invite uh out to families or parents that want to contact me and have any interest in those topics or any others to drop me a line and be happy to talk or zoom or or meet so that's where we're at that's the report for tonight um while we're at the this point you just talked about uh budget meetings and things like that through the ptos we're due to have a a public a formal public hearing for this group on the budget and if i remember it was supposed to be scheduled for tonight wasn't it yes we had it on the adopted budget calendar and definitely it was kind of missed through the holidays and everything going on with covet and icy weather um should we schedule a special meeting to to do a uh uh the public hearing sometime in the next two weeks or should we juggle around the cape meeting on the um on the 19th and do it just before our board meeting that day what do you think anybody have a suggestion we do need to have a public hearing they're not often that cape meeting is going to be hard one to juggle around because it'll be a long one next week isn't that policy on the 19th night yeah because cape isn't cape isn't the 19th oh it's policy yeah next week next wednesday and then next policies prior to the next board meeting on the 19th but we have cape next wednesday and policy the the the wednesday after that um and they're both at 5 30 or 6.

um so if everyone uh you know kind of keeps that on their mind if there's anyone that uh in your networks that you think would be a great fit um you know just keep us in the loop um and we'll continue to review um submissions uh with vanita and craig as well and the mayor um to fill that spot uh jamal do you have anything uh to add for leadership no i don't think so um just got my feet wet with this annual plan um it was good times so yeah nothing else to add it's a good one to get your feet wet you get real entrenched in those bylaws and all your charges and really we cannot thank you enough allison for your help absolutely all right so thank you both um and we will move on then to our fundraising and development working group which includes alison david and myself we have not yet met um this year again still early um so we have the whole year to do that and uh you know i don't have too much to add to fundraising at this moment uh david or allison do you have anything to add we look forward to meeting soon at lynn can you explain to me uh who holds the endowment and um how or where the endowment is held and how it's dispersed i i will take a stab and i'll screw up part of it and allison and danita can correct me where i'm wrong it is held in the ann arbor area community foundation and they contact us twice a year once a year with available with funding or with disbursement available funds and the [Music] commission itself makes a determination whether they're going to take the money out or not and what they use it for did i essentially get it right allison yeah that's all right um you know as endowments works we the interest rolls over and that's what we can take the money off of um we got a large donation last year which pretty much doubled our endowment which is why there was more activity this year around with a better understanding of it and you may have seen that last year we also reevaluated what those funds could be used for when the endowment was set up there was no maintenance process within the city to maintain public art so that was predominantly what the endowment funds were for but now we have maintenance of the public art pieces within each of the departments within the city so we wanted to kind of open up the doors to potentially facilitate purchasing public art or like we've done most recently communicating or acknowledging public art works um with the advertisement about the paintbrush award so we most recently took out 2500 full from our endowment and used about 600 on the observer ad so there's a little bit of money that's sitting at the city that we can still use this year from the endowment before we have to take out more before we take more funds next year if we decide to the past several years we've just let it roll over and haven't used it and put it back into the endowment and also um how should i say this their return on the investments over some of the years were not very well not didn't do well so we didn't have much uh interest to take out but with recent improvement in the markets there's a little bit more money to be to be allowed to come up thank you i i was curious about that because i was involved in the skate park effort and there was an endowment established at the community foundation in a similar fashion and making sure that the city was able to be able to access maintenance funds for the park and then i think there's an effort to add lights for skinny at night too so um i'm glad that it's a it's a similar and familiar setup and how thank you craig allison and lynn um yes and something else with our you know fundraising uh working group is you know we're always looking uh to to new grant opportunities um as well so a goal of ours is to apply to at least one grant this year vanita is great about keeping us up to date um on grant opportunities um and we're always looking for those as well um in addition to uh to our endowment and any other kind of fundraising efforts we can put together all right uh any uh anything else to add um for fundraising and development all right then i'm going to move on um to our annual uh chair and vice chair um review and election project so that is john and allison and um you have both clearly done your due diligence um we have new leadership this year and if john or allison if either one of you would like to add um add to that working group anything to report we have nothing to report at this time thank you [Music] thank you both um and before we adjourn um i apologize i wanted to give a former a formal uh welcome to lynn song um our new uh city council uh liaison and newest member to our our commission um we are so happy to have you lynn um and if you would like to say anything please take the floor great thank you thank you for having me um i'm eager to participate uh i myself am not an artist but i support artists uh and i appreciate the work that that uh that's involved in in making sure our community is beautiful um i'd love to see more public art especially as we start walking down this path of um committing federal relief funds you know seeing if we can build more affordable housing i see public art when i travel um recently in hawaii there's a you know there's an effort annually with graffiti work that adorns a one neighborhood a long affordable housing project same in there's a really amazing project in rome with four stories high murals and artists and residents in preparation for you know making sure um low-income neighborhoods are as beautiful and as attractive as every other neighborhood so uh there's an interest i'd love to see ann arbor actually invest its time and money towards that end and i i'd like to see what i can do on this commission so thank you for having me thank you lynn yes i think we have similar goals and uh i think we're going to uh to accomplish some great things in uh 2022 so again wonderful to have you here um and uh before we adjourn also um does anyone have anything to add any upcoming um events art related um anything anyone like would like to add before we adjourn for the evening i would like to applaud you you run a meeting 30 minutes this is a record i absolutely love it very well organized well done in your first meeting thank you very much john i have to thank you and benita and alison um really for you know great examples great agendas i can follow along so thank you very much john and i uh sophie i think i saw your hand uh yeah i have to remember what i was gonna ask um oh yeah one question and uh and then a comment after that uh probably john can help with this one i know the the capital improvement projects the cip thing is just for city projects right not for private projects but i'm thinking all the many buildings and things that are going up which are privately um being done is that would that all come under the the group that john kotowski is in with the planning permission type people um i forgot the name of it now the design review board exactly the design review board does every single one come up to the design review board and give the opportunity for input or is there some gaps anywhere let me just try to respond as best i understand it the cip is about municipal construction the city builds about 50 million dollars worth of stuff and this commission was set up through the percent for our program and that program was a set aside of one percent of all of that construction money that changed in 2013 and it became voluntary this commission was encouraged to identify potential for public art in the commission pro in the municipal construction projects the cip and that's what um um david and his committee has been doing over several years um it's more voluntary we we have to inspire uh the city to do this as far as private uh construction um it's somewhat similar we have to inspire we really can't order anybody to do anything just you know and i like that frankly if it's a good idea you know people will congregate around it the design review board um um uh reviews uh development within the um the dda kind of uh uh area so that if you want to build something within that area in other words the downtown that uh you have to present your plans to the to the design review board and they give you advice i am the art commission's leia so every project that comes up i let designers know that it was unanimous to appoint a liaison from the art commission to the design review board because the city council wants to see more public art done with private dollars they have invested millions of dollars in public money and they would like to encourage these developers to invest some of their money and that gets kind of a favorable response and then we suggest as a design review board some places in which these developers might consider public art that's been kind of successful um the new uh development that's happening on on william and maine that i forget what the name of that huge project is there's going to be a small piece of land that's set aside for a sculpture park it's a mini park it's right on packard in maine and the credit union the u of m credit union is going to develop redevelop or renovate part of their building that is an albert khan building that's on the corner of um i i think it is um division and in here on uh is that right craig and uh they're going to put an addition on the back of it and uh i was successful in recommending they put some way finding public car screening for their dumpsters that would give a map of all of the albert khan buildings that are on the campus i mean he's you know he's designed i think uh close to buildings i mean you know the the the the voice of albert khan is really dominant in the university of michigan there's no place that really showcases that they have really gotten excited about doing that so those are two projects that i think the art commission can take credit for um that i know of that they're going to do so those are two ways in addition to that the group with with david we've put together a public art idea book and that's open to anyone and it there's probably two or three hundred examples of public art around the world um and so folks that want to get ideas can go there and um and and you know and it's eye candy for people that like public art you'd love it lynn and um in addition yes so go ahead david i'm just gonna say i don't know why you're giving me credit for the idea book you did the entire thing yourself it's wonderful too you deserve the credit well what david did by himself was a um a review process of how to think about public art within private construction so i mean if it's it's it's kind of a novice you know like i want to decorate the building well that's one way of looking at it but we would prefer not to decorate with public art public art really talks about we think an identifier a language it speaks something visually with coded um images uh so that uh one you need to find a place that's prominent who's going to see it how are they going to see it uh and then from that beginning to a location to a type of art i mean a mural is one thing but there are a lot of other ways reliefs and sculptures and all kinds of other approaches that developers can think about beyond murals and then how do you select it well as many folks that have been on the art commission for a long time know that the most important thing isn't picking the art it's getting the community to buy into it so you know i mean we revere a stone a rock on here on and paint it it's a piece of public art it is a rock uh so if we can love that you know we can learn to love other kinds of things but there really needs to be an engagement of the public they need to participate and they need to feel some ownership so that this group has suggested that you know get professionals to narrow it down to three home runs and then let the public kind of weigh in on one of those three that's our recommendation so so we kind of package that and we present it both to the city for their municipal construction and to private investors through the design review board and then just generally uh from these these projects that both david and i worked on i hope uh that answers it i'm sorry i didn't sophie yes yes that answers it uh that answers it very well thank you john um i'm wondering if if there might be a meeting or something or a subcommittee meeting at some point where we can dream up ways of of influencing also buildings which are outside of the downtown area because there are so many of them now and it would be very exciting if we could make some inroads there um so that was that part um the other i just wanted to tell everybody about something that happened in the world of monuments which is you probably remember when um the colston statue the slave trader colston statue was thrown into the into the water in bristol and today the some of the people who were most prominent in doing that had the trial for vandalism i think and they actually were let off and were not not indicted of anything at all so that was rather remarkable i thought indeed thank you sophie for sharing that um important piece of world news today um and definitely a reason to um to think about the role that public art really plays in our lives as john touched on um art is a form of communication right and public art of course is a form of communication with our community um that we are serving um and it is important to make sure that the messages that we are giving our community and that represent who we are as a community really speaks to um equality and justice uh in this world so thank you so much sophie um and sorry just to circle back real quick um to the uh the other question um you know i believe with um the leadership working group um that jamal and i um will try to make some inroads to the downtown uh development authority as well i know that's focused obviously more on downtown buildings but that is another way that we can make some inroads with private businesses right private businesses especially if they're in such a visible area always benefit from serving the public it gives them more visibility and also benefits uh benefits them um so that's one way that we can also make some inroads with private development um and you know we really hope to leverage um our uh our leadership forum uh list that we all created last year um you know with with our networks um uh names of people that are uh artists and uh influer influencers in uh the art world in our community here um as well as you know forging a stronger relationship with the you know more newly developed ypsilanti art commission um that were able to all collaborate um you know to bring um awareness of public art also to these private developments um lynn yes i'm actually a liaison for the dda partnerships i think it has a new name it's housing and dda something so if there's any way that i can help you that um i'm making and seeing if um uh we can get those conversations with them they'd be happy for it i think they've done some really great work and investing in the downtown infrastructure with the bike lanes um so i mean it looks beautiful so and they're also um pre-entitling and making getting ready for the affordable housing in that dda footprint too so there are opportunities to work more closely together i'd love to help that is exactly what we want to hear lynn that is fantastic um so we will certainly set up um you know a meeting in the future where you know we can uh uh kind of sit down and and discuss some of these opportunities and you know give you more background answer more questions you have um about the commission all right so um anything else um to add uh before we adjourn for the evening no all right then do i have i have a motion to adjourn john and do i have a sophie thank you so much um happy new year everyone uh again welcome lynn and uh thank you all for your time tonight and uh our next meeting uh will be uh wednesday uh february 2nd same time seven to nine is our allocated time so um sure i'll see some of you in between that time um but if i don't see you i look forward to seeing you in february thank you everyone good night you

i'll see that's the policy six rosie do you think cape is gonna go past uh or might uh do you guys think it's gonna go past the six o'clock that's the one where we're gonna be talking about the program of studies so it's going to be a long meeting sorry no it's okay i'm just trying to figure out how to how we fit in a public hearing as a group um how long does the public hearing usually run depends how many attendees we have yeah otherwise last year was like 15 minutes yeah last sometimes they can be really short sometimes they can go on but bob to your point last year was on a zoo meeting yeah so we also could move policy this would i don't know if this would work the policy committee but if we move policy earlier then we could have the hearing after that you know so but again it might be very difficult with work circumstances debbie d you have uh you have a big agenda for policy or a small agenda that week i mean you don't get feedback i think from the policies that we're talking about tonight right yeah we were gonna um dive into the cave policies that are up for you know the mandated policies that were not included in ours and start digging through those so it could be you know probably will we would use our whole meeting time okay the logical thing to do would to do it be to do it right after the cape meeting next wednesday the problem is it's a little open-ended time-wise yeah there's a lot on that agenda could we maybe do the public hearing before and start a little bit later because the public hearing is probably a little more containable time-wise yeah we could that could probably work would that be okay bob what do you what do you think about what do you think as far as a start time well i'm thinking uh that we could do um is you're the publication meeting in an in-person meeting or is it a uh is it a uh yeah it's zoom yeah public hearing um and uh to start cape at 6 30.

or you know if we go a little bit long you can start a couple minutes late i mean it's it's it's a little you could work it that way schedule-wise what do you think the public hearing be zoomed to yeah we should do the public then do the public hearing by zoom dr ruby has a question um there's a lot of people presenting uh at cape that night so i would need to check and see what their other their long-term availability is you know usually usually start at six we usually start at 5 45 but mike has asked us to change the time of the meeting to 610 to so he can make it to the meeting so we're starting our meetings at 6 10 and we have multiple presenters our january meeting is always a very robust meeting because in alignment with the budget we have um the program of studies for the high school needs to be done because that the approval of that is uh paramount to the kickoff of everything that needs to be done for counseling and scheduling and whatnot for the next year we also have a program and new course proposals that come to cape and then the textbooks and programmatic purchases that are aligned with the budget that if everything happens in the january meeting because that's where it fits in so our but the agenda which has already gone out that we planned the meeting in the fall we always plan them several months ahead but this one has i think four or five presenters so just as long as i can contact them make sure that they don't have you know they've moved their dinner and they have families i mean i i can't speak for them let me suggest something then why don't um i'm mike obviously you're coming off the end of your work day and about getting able to get there if we could have the majority of our board and at least a quorum at 5 30 right we could do the public hearing at 5 30.
