Bucko's retirement and so many key retirements in our corporation this year, I just wanted to share that with Ms. Bucko. I was you know, in formal settings, she would present at a board meeting, or we'd see her in a in a situation that um I knew of her, I knew what a great job she was doing at MacArthur, but then I was uh given the opportunity to do a walk and talk at one point in time. And just we walked through the building, and I actually did two. And what the second one, I believe, was with Mr. Smith. And um and I like truly gained uh an appreciation and a respect for what she did, um how she can you know, ran her building, and and conducted her work. And uh so, I I just feel like sometimes it's uh you know, if that little little pieces uh of acknowledgement to what we saw what I saw and how she had the respect of her building, it means so much it always meant so much to me, but seeing it in person was really special.
I appreciate it. Um so, the first one we're going to go through is the varsity locker room renovation that's here at the high school. Um so, as you'll see from the bid tab that we provided, um we we bid this one at the beginning of this month. We had four bidders pick up drawings. Uh three of those four reached out to me and informed me that the project would not fit into their current summer construction schedule, so they did not turn in bids. Um so, we only received one bid, but um tell you a little history on this project. This project actually is one that um we started looking at back in 2025 and as the 2022 bond was working its way through spend down, we were trying to fit something else in at the end. So, this is the one that we kind of earmarked for that.
Expenses just a little ahead and if you look there at the very bottom line there, I don't crazy crazy close to where we had originally projected as far as our balance today. I'm pretty sure we won't do that every month, but it is pretty well in line with what we predicted. All right, thank you, Mr. Miles.
>> That's okay. >> But we had to change it because it was voted to change. >> Yes, I know. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. >> But I told you you have your say at the end of the meeting. Either you or Zoa. >> Uh table matters. None. Personnel resignations. I see none. Oh, I see Rachel Giamasi, early childhood assistant, effective June 22nd, 2026. Leaves of absences, none retirements, Suzanne Wlette, administrative assistant, effective June 15, 2026. Uh it's important to note that uh Sue is a 26-year employee. She started here in November of 2000. Happy retirement, Sue. Appointments. Daniel McLord, IT hardware and operations systems instructor, effective April 6th, 2026. Sophia Kim, finance specialist, effective March 23rd, 2026. I have uh three job postings. I'd like to vote on them separately. uh intensive English language institute for freshman ML caregivers instructors up to two parap professionals up to two and clerical up to one for summer of 2026 per teachers paris clerical contract July 13th through July 30th 2026 this is a new position and I believe these are all our teachers and our aids for summer work.
Yeah, I think he and his team are looking at it, but yes, yeah. Um, we can we can look into that detail. >> I I will say this still does leave um, CLS with about $150,000 in various supplies across instructional, um, other supplies, things like that. >> Yeah, but what did they spend in this budget? >> They they will be they still have supplies uh, remaining to spend this year and we're almost at May, so >> But what are they budgeted for? Let's >> Oh, they're budgeted for >> So, they have been looking to see if with their remaining money would there be anything critical in here that if they get now, they wouldn't have to ask for it next year? >> Yes. Yeah, and I think that that's fair, right? But if we're talking about reducing it, you know, that it's 100,000, did they spend, you know, 250 this year and we're going to 100?
>> Uh first thank you for everyone who participated in the recent Board of Education election. Certainly appreciate their participation and it's important to the community to be involved. Uh congratulations to those who have retired and I want to thank those who have resigned recently for their service to the district. Uh congratulations to the teachers of the year as well as the paraprofessionals of the year. Uh Garfield really needs our role models like that and uh we have to really thank them for being that those uh individuals of of exemplary role models. Congratulations to the students of the month. Uh I want to thank the student government for their participation. Appreciate working with them. Thank you for the Purple Star award. That was a fantastic program. And uh I've been honored to serve as the president this past year, and it truly has been an honor.
So it would mirror each other but they would be getting it Spanish which is important for them. Here's my cost proposal. >> [laughter] >> That's right. Um So, the both of the links are are um both quotes are linked there. And the only future cost is actually to replace novels if they're damaged, but we did pick hard cover books in hopes that we don't have to replace them and that we take very good care of them.
Because of this, we offer the highest number of science, unique science classes for a school our size in the state. We offer 17 different courses, six of which are AP and two dual credit classes. Um, as Erin said, if you've not been to the lab at East, come see what the chaos is about. It's over 10,000 square feet of up to eight classes at one time doing eight totally different things. Um, and we do hold it all together, but that's where the teachers make the spark happen for the students. >> Hello everybody. Um, I'm very happy to be part of East and I see myself being there for at least the unforeseeable future. And this has to do because of those veteran teachers. They've welcomed me in. They show me the way. They lead me to what I need to know. Um, and I can't wait to continue to follow in their footsteps as I've just um started my journey with teaching.
And I'm sure that's the way she uh um was always viewed around her around her building. So, congratulations, and thank you for all the years of service. >> Mr. Angel. >> Uh yes, congratulations to Mary. And I got to know her being here a pretty long time. And the extras that are needed to make sure MacArthur stays on a level playing field with uh parent things and issues like that that some of our schools don't deal with on a daily basis. I can vividly remember a uh story she told where a parent had left her minivan open overnight and then brought her kids to school late and overnight a raccoon had gotten underneath the seat in the back. So, literally got there and then the raccoon, as the kids were getting dropped off for school school were found in there and Marion had the resources and that to make sure that that raccoon was going to get out of that van before anybody else went back in it.
And so, we were able to have enough funds to pursue this project. We We got it designed and then out to bid and um so, the remaining funds that are still in the 2022 bond will cover this project in its entirety. Actually, we'll leave a little bit left over for the school to to use on their own for maybe painting touch-ups or other things. Um this project does provide and remedy um a long-standing Title IX issue and creates equality for both girls and boys um cuz there is a special locker room within the locker rooms uh for varsity teams and uh this this design will remedy that issue and provide uh those special locker rooms for both girls and boys. Um this project also provides ADA access for student athletes, coaches, and staff uh which does not now it is not ADA at all. Um due to funding coming out of the 2022 bond uh we're trying to close out that bond uh soon.
Board, any questions or comments? Yes, Ms. Lawrence. First, how are we going to make up that dollar, Mr. Miles? >> I we're going to work hard at it, I promise you. Second, well and well done. This it's I know it's a lot of hard work to get there. The question I have is more a macro question as it relates to the current economy and some of the increases I know that we're all feeling in terms of cost. So have we considered adjusting any of our budgetary items? Are are we getting hit? Are we seeing a lot of that? I know maybe in construction, but Yeah, we it's a great question and and yes, certainly we are seeing some impacts. Some of our contracts long-term, we've we're locked in and so we're protected on some of those things. We purchased, you know, some of that we've talked about before, fuel and some other things that way.
Am I right, Mr. Loy? >> Yes. >> Okay. Can I get a motion on that, please? >> Motion to approve. We got a second. Any discussion? All those in favor? >> Discussion. Quick question, >> please. >> Uh the position is uh temporary in the summer. >> Yes. >> Okay. Thank you. And is this part of any union contracts? >> Professionals and clarif >> I >> opposed. Thank you. Business office specialist clerical contract new position details are attached. Um they were missing from mine. I believe they might be in yours. If not, they were handed out to you. Um, Mrs. Ferris had it. I didn't have it in mine, but if you have it, it's business office specialist. That's the job description. Can I get a motion to approve that? >> Motion to approve. >> Second.
Did they spend 150 and we're going to 100? It makes a big difference. >> So, across various supply lines, we we would be going to 150 and there's about 220 budgeted. But again, there's a lot of supplies still yet to be spent this year. Um and so, I think, you know, again, I think his team is very comfortable. It's also a little bit tricky to gauge um CLS has not yet spent all of their supply monies in any current year since the building has opened um because of the freeze, that was one area that we knew, okay, freeze supplies supplies are always the first to sort of be a hard um stop if there's a budget freeze. And so, they have never spent fully their supply lines and so, I think, you know, and they have been okay. Um ideally, they would spend those and it would be optimal um across all the board, you know, all the different um departments.
A very uh important experience for me. And uh dedicated to this district, and I want to thank the Board of Education as well as the superintendent and the business administration for uh recognizing the dedication I have. Uh with that, I'm going to call for a motion to adjourn. Mr. Garris. >> Mrs. Asan, second. >> I'll make a motion. >> Gaba, Mrs. Asan seconded it. All in favor? >> Thank you.
>> [snorts] >> Yeah, are there any questions for Kelly? I do have a question about um is for the current human geography current human geography course in monolingual English, I'm assuming they have a textbook of some sort. Does that textbook do they offer a Spanish version of that textbook? And if so, what are the reasons for going with something else? They do not. Oh. So, um it was very hard to find contemporary human geography texts. Um actually, Dr. Campbell, when she was still here, helped to reach out to districts very very far away and we got a few more. Um for some reason, it's not a common class. Mhm. Um but our team had decided that's the class they wanted to use. So, it does not come in Spanish, but we did reach out to them at first. Okay. The I'm thinking of future curriculum um cycles, would it be best practice or to have this course along with the monolingual version of the course on the same cycle eventually?
But um because of our experienced teachers, we get to take our kids on some magnificent field trips such as the ocean kids get to go to the Keys in Florida. Um do some science. They're not just hanging out there. Um they get to go to the Falls of Ohio. Mr. Lenot is going to take his kids to the IU cadaavver lab so that way the anatomy kids can really get in there with the human bodies. Um, and of course, uh, for AP chemistry, they get to go to the forensics lab and get to see all the kinds of science that they do when you're an adult out in the world. Thank you, East Science Department. It is now my honor to introduce the Columbus and North Math Department. North's math department is led by Brad Brham, the department chair. if he would join me. There are 14 math teachers at Columbus North with 215 years of BCSSE experience.
So, just uh one of the stories I'll never forget in my work with the kids here because uh I'm sure a lot of people would have probably freaked out in a different way and things might have not have gone as planned knowing you have kids in there on the way to school. So, congratulations to her and also to Marty. Uh Marty hasn't been with us a whole lot of time, but I can tell you this. If you think about what goes on on a daily basis in a transportation department of a school this size with 9,000 kids and getting kids back and forth in a safe manner, getting athletic teams, band teams, you name it, every which way but loose to their destinations in a safe manner, managing those bus drivers, making sure the bus uh inspections are up to code and that we're passing all those.
Um we were concerned about possibly putting this back out to bid and wait another summer. We think prices are only going to go up with the economy that we're in right now. So, um timing-wise, to give you a little idea about timing for this project uh it is two phases. I presented this at the last meeting. So, phase one of this project would start uh this summer and then phase two would wrap up in the fall prior to the start of the basketball season. So, with that, I do recommend approval of the one bid that we did receive from J.G. Bowers in the bid amount of $820,000. And please note that J.G. Bowers is currently working in this building uh on the 2024 restroom renovation project.
But there's others, utilities, things that are more variable costs. Certainly we're seeing we are seeing some impact in that. You know, our budget is set by the state once a year, so we're we're really kind of locked into that and certainly we don't have we don't have we have very little control of our revenue sources. So ADM's critical. Recruit, recruit, recruit, retain, retain, retain. And and so we're watching those things closely. Our ADM will be critical. Certainly our June tax collections, when those come in, we'll be watching those closely as well to see just to see kind of how we what the rubber meets the road in terms of our collections versus projections. But yeah, it's something we're going to need to watch and we'll keep this board apprised of where we're at. You know, our goals are going to be a little tougher maybe to meet than what we have in the past, but we will we'll continue to do our due diligence.
>> Any discussion? Mrs. Ferris, will you shut your light, please? Thank you. Uh all those in favor say I. >> Opposed? >> I custodians second shift uh custodians contract new position and there is uh a job description on that one. Can I get a motion on the custodian? I get a second.
