we began the year at 1880 and so there hasn't been a a big drop most of the pickup has been at the elementary with 11 students above what they were in august and at the junior high they started with 290 they have three extra students the biggest changes you see are the most transitions are at the high school level you have students if they're going to drop out they drop out in this december if they move they normally move in december we'll probably get some kids in january from out of state and uh in the state we may get you know five to ten at the high school and so the the the total population of uh you have to remember we have 121 kindergarten students we're only funded for 60.5 of those kids because we offer all-day kindergarten we're only funded for half day so that's at a cost of about a quarter of a million dollars a year with all the other little intricacies kids that are going to navit programs students that are going part-time or online we are funded for 1740 kids so we have we have to support 1860 but we're only support we're only given funding for 1740.

if you remember last year our model was half day curriculum for our elementary students we also offered uh remote only for our students we had both a hybrid model and a remote for our students so the data that i'm going to present tonight is kind of looking at kind of where we're at right now we definitely had some losses um and i want to look at first of where the state's at in terms of losses just to put your mind on where everybody else is is sitting maybe so this came off of the state board of education and i think this kind of represents where we're at in math if you can see the the black you might look in your book but you can see that for grade three across the state there's a 23.6 percent loss between and they're talking about from 2019 scores to where students across the state uh scored in 2021 so you can see that then the natural loss in third grade was fairly large fourth grade was almost 30 percent in math uh fifth grade was almost 20 percent in math sixth grade was 14 7th grade was 12 8th grade was 19 the large grade was 14 for basically an average across the state of about 18 percent so if we can fall somewhere in the range of 18 to 20 you're going to find that we're falling within the regional area as well as what the state had in terms of losses for math and then the same thing on the next page is your ela and for grade three it was a 22 percent loss uh in ela grade 4 saw 23 across the state five saw 22 percent grade 6 saw 13 grade 7 was 19 grade 8 was 12 11 7 and all was 16.6 or uh 7 17 average i think the interesting thing here and you're going to see our trends say the same thing for some reason 7th graders you're going to see a bigger dip for us as well as just you're seeing here with the state so we followed that trend line that the state saw as well one of the pieces i wanted to look at because i think it's we always talk about our regional um schools that we like to compare ourselves to cainlyn did not take the assessment last spring they chose to take the assessment this fall so we did not have scores for kaelyn for the three through eighth grade students so they're not listed here in general to pick them up as a comparative district so for this purpose you can see we have geneva st charles and batavia the green across represents who is meeting and exceeding and you see that it's far below what we're used to seeing we're usually in the 50 to 60 percentile range uh so we have a pretty good loss there across the district and uh third or eighth grade uh so you can kind of see where central's sitting comparative to other neighboring districts and we're right in line there uh other than saint charles who seemed to fair better than the other three districts should you became in us that was for math knox is the same comparative for english language arts uh we fared much better there we're right in line with batavia um gene repair a little bit less than what we did again st charles is still ahead of us but overall um we've seen to maintain at least alongside the regional partners that we compare ourselves to third through eighth grade this i think is an interesting piece one of the things we keep hearing across our district is that we have buildings that are so diverse or so much different than the next door neighbor building and that's why we're seeing differences in trends and i think when you look here you can see the student characteristics that we have it's interesting to me that country trails is very similar to hbt for the most part the only difference is really in uh the low income and when you look at that lake actually marries off against uh hbt for low income so the the perception that we have a building that is a lower performing or a more demographically you know more demographically sound building ice building that has a lot more demographics isn't true you can see here almost to the t ct and hbt are fairly fairly close uh which you would anticipate uh next in line in terms of uh demographic shifts would be preview and of course the lake is uh still 85 white which is high compared to the rest of our district in terms of where we're at demographically uh student mobility it's interesting because both the hbt and the lake have high student mobility uh which is an interesting factor for lake becky has been saying that for many years that she gets a lot of students who come and go throughout the course of the year and when you look at her building for mobility it's a smaller building so 10 is a pretty good number of students that come in and out our low income numbers both hbt and lilly lake are fairly close together but then you look at the english learners and hbt has a lot more of the tbe which is our bilingual students the students that actually get bilingual services within our district i think this tells a nice picture of our district it's a great crowd yeah um the next few slides are going to look at each grade level i didn't do individual buildings here you'll see them toward the end but this really looks at the third grade all together so third grade across the district looking at our hybrid students versus our remote only students um and it was interesting in some cases we would anticipate that remote would always not perform as well there are great bands we're actually remote performed as well or better which kind of gets to the point of talking about you know where do we move educationally are there students that would perform better in a different type of setting is that something we should consider as we look to move forward should we always consider that the traditional settings best for all kids or is that something as a board we want to consider re-looking at and thinking about maybe talking about through our district leadership teams to consider are there a different population out that should have a different type of opportunity for learning in this case i mean i don't need to read this to you see we have 38 percent that are meeting um and hybrid and 31 percent uh that were meaning remote you definitely can see a difference in the who did not meet uh they went from approaching to do not meets in remote which is not the area where we want those with students that are just right there on the bubble uh we definitely lost them in the remote setting and we kind of maintained a little bit better in the hybrid for third grade math fourth grade math interesting enough remote meets and exceed performed i'll perform that the hybrid model which was face to face and but what you can see is it's those students that were struggling the approach went into the means of the below and definitely we did much better for those students that student population in the hybrid model fifth grade definitely hybrid for fifth grade performed much better um in the meets and exceed category as one was you can see there was a huge shift for our students that were approaching to the does not meet category and below standards so uh it definitely hurt the students that were that bubble kid uh but our reason exceeds you know if they were exceeding they shifted somewhere in there but most of us shift has come from approaching to our does not meet category and then ela same graph with the third grade for ela and this one it was fairly close to what you're seeing there's a few percentage differences between those categories uh but overall third grade ela i would say it's a fairly close match between remote and hybrid four percent differential for you meat succeeds and not a lot of difference between approach to does not meet which is interesting because third grade is a big pinnacle year to shift in terms of reading and literacy um so you would have expected i i would have expected a much larger differential there but they fared pretty well fourth grade much better for the hybrid so students that weren't face to face with which is what i would expect for english language arts uh that's the reading and writing components you can see they fared better in terms of meets and exceeds um and some approaching one into the does not meet for the remote kids so those students that struggled shifted a little bit more into that does not meet category and then for fifth grade uh almost identical other than a few of your approaching one and two does not meet for elementary the other piece i think is this this gives you each building you can see the subgroups the low-income english language arts and with ieps um so those are the students the dis the students with ieps are actually our students with this ieps we do have another category this year with disabilities that includes 504 kids this does not include our 504 students um you can see in some buildings we're definitely struggling with some of those subgroups uh areas for growth that we can take a peek at the challenges where they remote or not remote did we have access to them do we now you know we'd have to do all that desegregation um overall you can see our score trends in each building are down with the exception of the lake fared very well in terms of where they generally sit there at 63 percent of their eli students met and math was 60 so they fared very well um throughout the course of this remembering that lilly lake does have a much smaller class sizes because it's a much smaller school so generally speaking their class sizes last year were very small based on the kids that were going remote versus in class hybrid learning also keep in mind that our remote students were taught in other buildings in some cases not in their home school they kind of replaced with a teacher and so they were taught across the district but their scores went back to their home building and so that mixes right back into the home building even if they were not taught there those scores represent their where they're actually are living in residence any questions on the elementary data thoughts so middle school you can see the demographics for these guys they're parallel i mean there's almost it's like the wrong snapshot exact same parallel so what you'd expect uh interesting though i mean sixth seventh and eighth grade look exactly the same when you combine our whole district together it's fairly close to being parallel which is very interesting and you can see the demographics of our population which is great to see we're definitely becoming a much more diverse district which i think is always a positive thing for all parties for sixth grade hybrid remote um you can see almost identical really was not much just between a remote and hybrid student overall 38 of our students met are exceeded in sixth grade you know probably 20 points lower than what we generally see ira math performance uh definitely hybrid feared better in seventh grade for math um whatever reason i mean it could be the makeup which is different and you know we don't we don't really know it could be the students that came and took the test and we'd have to do a little more digging here to figure out exactly what went on but just overall hybrid performed better which is what we would expect and then eighth grade just the opposite very minimal very very close almost identical between hybrid and remote only students yelling massive difference between our hybrid streets for english language arts in sixth grade um you have a 19 differential there you can also see that the approaching is much higher which is good then that does not mean where you're seeing a little bit shift there for the remote kids so remote because the sixth grade definitely uh did not fare as well as our students who are face to face in seventh grade uh you can see the the shift where are approaching of our remote kids went into the does not mean but overall uh remote kids fared just as well as our students that were face-to-face in seventh grade it fits the data what we saw across the state as well because that growth at seventh grade seems to be one of those areas that we saw across the state being problematic eighth grade hybrid much better for ela uh seven percent differential you can see the approaching shifting into does not meet in eighth grade so definitely being face to face for these group of students was much more effective and then i compared it between prairie and almost and central middle school in terms of progress across ela math and the subgroups that we are looking at cms did not have the number of ela students to qualify that's why it says not applicable but you can see one of the categories that is a focus area for us this year is to figure out why we had zero percent of our students meeting um or exceeding for math and english learners because it's not a language three percent meeting or exceeding and then also our students with disabilities uh definitely um are not fairing as well so we have to check that programming out and we have implemented new programs so we'll continue to watch this to see if it makes a difference high school uh you see comparisons across the way um we have central high school we do not pick up canelon because cainlin does the s.a.t uh geneva saint charles and batavia so you can see demographically where we're sitting next to our neighbors which i think you know helps us see kind of where we're at and what we're how we're performing i think we perform quite well when you look at our comparative of where we're demographically compared to the people we compare ourselves to we do a very good job of staying right in line with them central high school one of the things i was impressed about central high school they actually maintained fairly closely not too far off of where they've been sitting they did not have a massive loss in either one of their categories so it was good to see them kind of hold the plane there at the high school so when you look at the the math data for sat comparison comparing ourselves to geneva st charles batavia now you see kailyn uh you can see we're right in the running there uh if you recall we're generally sitting below these guys but we are closing the gap year over year we continue to close that gap uh we're very very close 23 off of batavia um st charles of course we have a little bit of marker there which we're used to seeing is only seven percent though which is a little bit less than where i've been before at eight so it's good to see us kind of still maintaining that even in a pandemic and one of the things we noticed with high school is we did have a lot of chronic absenteeism and so that absenteeism impacts academics as well so some target areas for this year that we're looking at are some of those components that could be impacting some of the growth that we would expect to see at the high school level on the sat when you say meets or exceeds approaching like what what's the benchmark the bench so the state board of education actually has a benchmark that's higher than the college board by 10 points for the math and it's by 20 points for ela we have no idea why state board decided to do that so you can't compare it to a nationwide uh comparative just because we have a much higher benchmark so 530 to 560 i think is the markers okay thank you but that's your meets and exceeds they consider ela we fared really well oh it's really great to see we actually uh maintained and passed botania and caneland and we're closing the gap on ginny van saysself so that was good to see i think we've heard very very well in english language arts at the high school level the approaching we'd like to see a little bit lower but again i think they're they're definitely making some gains year over year even in a pandemic looking at hybrid versus remote math definitely made a difference to be face to face uh you can see the differential there approaching maintain there still a high number of uh people that did not meet or exceed for remote only our hybrid students perform much much better for math and then for ela again made a big difference to be there face to face in terms of hybrid for the high school you can see the differential 51 percent to 37 and you're approaching and partially meets as well so for high school students being in person with our staff definitely made a difference and then just to give you kind of the breakdown of how we're fearing because it's hard to tell we wanted to know how we're doing in subgroups uh next to our neighbors so this lays in for you how we're doing in terms of our subgroups meeting and exceeding um next to our neighbors to look at areas and patterns where we could make some improvements again english learners is a challenge for us we have zero percent that met in ela other districts too but of course we don't want to be there and we did not have any students with ieps that met in math or ela at the high school level so definitely areas of target any questions on the high school then lastly i always like to look at cohort data the colors that you see up here are representative of our cohorts of students or watching our students as they take the 2015 third graders and you kind of monitor them as they go down so you have your 24 24 21 16 12. so this is does not meet going down which is good to see over a years uh big problem there right one from 12 meets in exceed 12 to 35 percent with the pandemic for that cohort um approaching you can see some nice gradual numbers there which is good to see we wanted to see that going down that's the right direction um and then your meets and exceeds are going up uh pretty nicely as we're watching going through our system so that's good to see we took a hit of course in the pandemic the one group that i think is our watch group is our 2016 which is our 2025 graduates so it's our ninth graders this year for whatever reason um each year you can see what's happening um we i don't know why but that is a group we've got to take a peek at and that would be our current ninth graders who just came out of the pandemic um so we need to take a peek at what's going on with that class itself and then the same thing for ela it wasn't as dramatic it was for math but you can watch the the cohorts there to see but for the most part you see us making really good gains year over year uh with the students the same students just kind of looking cohort instead of just this one snap in time i think it's easier to look at the groups going through our school system do a good job definitely the pandemic hit us though so we'll see how we pick back up this school year the district received two foias one from abc 7 chicago news requesting information on remote learning equipment that was reported missing damaged or broken stolen unavailable for use and since we were an early adopter of one to one we didn't really have those issues and we didn't have um we didn't have responsive documents for the foia and then for the second one came from the chicago laborers district council requesting the bid results for the cafeteria expansion we were able to share those results [Applause] all right that concludes that section so we'll take the time and freaking motion second and turn over session and go into the exact same direction folk yes hanfield yes nolan yes yes rabe yes a thief yes gorman yes thank you again for coming out

ready for school in august any questions on my section yes no i'll turn over mr james so as of right now the project would have an estimated cost of about 17.4 million but as dr rocco and mr ledgert have said we won't know that exact cost until bids come in and things are very uh in flux right now we would enter into a lease agreement with the multi-district building corporation like we have for most of our other building projects now the cost of this expansion does meet the definition of a controlled project by indiana code it's subject to public hearings challenge process through indiana code and other steps outlined and which is this is just step one this project is below the threshold requiring a public referendum but instead there's these other processes that are outlined in code for 2022 our debt service funds have currently have a total tax rate of about 31.87 cents and it has generates a tax levy of 17 million 125 and there should be three fours there dollars that is what we used to pay the debt for our previous projects this 17.4 million dollars in bonds would be paid back over 20 years we're gonna estimate the interest rates at three and a half percent currently they're somewhere in the one and a half to two percent range but you never know what could happen between now and the time we would actually sell the bonds so we want to more so estimate high and take all that cost into consideration but hopefully the rates will be less more like to where they are now um so this project would add approximately two and a half cents to the tax rate and be about 1.2 million dollars annually to the levy in order to pay the debt back just as a reminder to the board and the community we did refinance our series 2011 2012 and 2013 bonds in 2020 and decreased our debt payments by 1.4 million dollars annually and that lowered the tax rate by about 2.

that's part of the convoluted arizona funding formula and so that's it is what it is i won't be labored to talk about why that is or if i agree or disagree but it's what it is are there any questions on the student populations at any of those campuses or that report august versus january 18th so just so i understand we lost high school students and gained junior high and gained elementary students correct okay correct so can we um in the past and i know that covet probably has reduced our ability to have meetings but can we go back and review like average class sizes and see how we're doing in regards to administrative support versus student support and teachers just so we can have a better grasp sure of and look forward sure so wilt that with with your uh request mr president we'll do our class sizes per grade level i will add that we're doing much better this year than in years past and there is great energy around trying to keep these numbers as small as we can to for learning loss it's really hard when you have 32 kids in an elementary class to to function and to make up learning it's even more difficult so we'll talk about some strategies and we'll also give that information with your permission i'll carry that over to next month thank you thank you in the past we've also talked about how those students and those numbers and their six how successful they are in their education plan if we could maybe just include that in their review so remediation that we talked about because of loss of students or students that are online how successful are they versus in the traditional classroom just basic that is easy we the drop-out rate is three times as high for online we have a small population roughly half of them don't make it in a really quick short order right and so it's not a big number i mean we're looking nine or 11 not a big number blue ridge online but the and there's two reasons for that some of the students that are going online they might have had uh an earlier a long-term expansion or an expulsion and that was the only opportunity when they came back or it was a family situation that urged that in some cases they're really high performing students but that's very a very narrow margin with our high amount of coveted cases at this time and then with white mountain apache reservation closing for two weeks i just want to make sure that we have a good grasp of like how successful these kids are during times that they're not at school so those are just some things that i yeah and we'll we will report back on that mary the short story is online is not nearly as effective as in person and that's why our energy is to get them back and keep them here right and that uh but we do have it it's probably anecdotal it's not going to be a research sound in terms of uh having the data won't be without it problems because it's anecdotal it won't be we don't have a baseline right and the current numbers but we can at least give you some ideas yeah because we talked in one time having like a hybrid or opportunity so for example my daughter was out of school because we had a wonderful household of covid and as a result she comes back to school and she's 120 pages behind in an english book because we're not how are we approaching that gap that's my question yeah because i know that there's some families that are also afraid to come back to school right now so when we have large gaps of three weeks or four weeks of missing school because of outbreaks like how can we support and the short answer is we cannot the work the work mounts and when we looked at a hybrid it's not sustainable we'd have to add staff so what happens is we do have a good number of students with high high absenteeism both local and that are open enrollment and what we're have informed the open enrollment students is if you continue with high levels of absenteeism you will not be renewed so that's one of the elements that we have is in order to maintain that people have to maintain their absences because our teachers it's impossible for them to make up two years of learning inside one to begin with now the kids that are functioning well and have function well and are typically in in mid higher socioeconomical have suffered far less than those that are in the lower middle and lowest that students at the lowest level have obviously suffered the most we are not making a lot of progress with the kids at the very low levels and our high absenteeism is among the highest in those groups and so there are outreach programs we have summer school planned and we have some remediation going on now but we're going to see it in the data and i would say statewide you'll see the same thing areas with high socioeconomics those kids are doing okay lower to middle are not going to have made up much difference in what they did last year it's going to be really a two or three year project with those that are behind and as far as just being honest with the community we do not have the capacity to maintain an online presence and an in-person presence and a hybrid presence we'd love to do all that and we did we considered it but in visiting with our administration and our staff just not sustainable but we'll provide the data on the plan and then i want to make sure i understand we've captured your concerns um jennifer so the you want an update on absenteeism and you want to update on class size by grade like for example i called the school and i said i need homework for my kids and i'm not receiving a response so i think that it's important that maybe we implement some type of regimen that maybe either comes from the office or down below because it would be nice if someone and that maybe we just don't have staff could follow up you know when someone's gone from school for seven days because of continued fevers or whatever it would just be nice if i don't know how we can track it it's going to be something that's new and different but leaving a message on a voicemail is very is kind of difficult to be able to get was like we just have to figure out a plan like what's what's our plan what can we inform our family members to be able to reach out and i'm sure it was also me because i was really sick during that time so i wasn't as active if i would have been healthy with a quarantined kid and this another kid sick with covid but i think that there's just a gap that we could fill and i don't know if who was responsible the counselors at the school when there's high absenteeism to call and say hey how are you doing or i don't know like generally generally i know that the from administrative point of view the principal's expectation is if you have a kid that's out for a long time i'd like you to reach out to them and find out why and at that time what you won't hear is or shouldn't here's oh don't worry about it you'll get to it well if you've missed a week of work you should be worried because there should be quite a bit of stuff you've missed and vast majority of the classes there are so the front line communication is that teacher and parent and those are the relationships we need to continue to build it would be nice if we could have a whole other arm created to do that i know we don't have the budget capacity to do that but that's where that relationship is and that communication is really important and that's where it should be had and i don't know if our computer system can like do an alert for a teacher like boom reach out to this kid because teachers are overwhelmed and stressed just as much and sick too so i don't know if that's an option is if that's an additive feature that we can have in synergy or something yeah so okay thank you can you put that one down as a follow-up comment is that other one i even brushed my teeth working sorry is is there any possibility that avid could get involved with recommendations to some of these kids that have really fallen behind that are good kids good students that they just don't get to support is there a vehicle for them to be addressed or flagged you know for a better word i don't know potentially is this working yeah um potentially i mean certainly again the kids that are in that elective class should be having that and and it's you know i agree i think teachers are overwhelmed um and at this point i know sort of my habit has been if a kid reach out reaches out to me or a parent to me then i send work immediately but you know we don't have the communication at the high school between you know our attendance or the front office then saying sending work like that system is not in place my thought was since if they're in avid and they and the avid group they're in the class that they're in recognizes that they're gone is there any way they can reach out to that or are there teachers perhaps in the junior high they can say i've got this good student that's just can't seem to get to school is there any way that student could be uh recruited by avid that's what my question was absolutely i see how it works good for everybody i just wonder if it's working yeah no and um i think ideally yes right the kids in those elective cohorts are do have that access point um and yes those are the kinds of students that we're asking teachers to recommend and it has it is a little bit of a of a juggling act right now because if they if it's an absenteeism from a week or two weeks of sickness then that's one thing but you know so but we're listening to teacher recommendations for all of that yeah thanks i know it's kind of overwhelming but i appreciate your interest in it thank you dr wright i will add that there's a note in attendance that we even created a field for um covet covert related quarantine or family member whatever i tell you the principles are very understanding and try to working through that there are cases where children have lost siblings and they're gone for a week or two we work with them and we help them i mean we have a heart that's why i'm saying it's not there's not a one fix all easy thing but i would say that the administration's doing the best they can what we need to do is see what other automated tools are there to push information to make sure there's a dashboard that we understand who's at risk if you remember we have a list of 197 kids either attendance behavior or worry that we're tracking already and these are a vast majority that we're worried about self-harm or harm to others and so there's only so much attention you can do and so if parents are not participating and parents are not following up they're not going to get the same support said if they're kept bugging them saying i need to get this homework i need to get this homework one phone call leaving a message probably won't do it but a phone call every day will yeah like when your kid cuts class or it has an unexcused absence there's a great i mean they text you and they call you right so you know um but maybe there can be something else because it should be it should be simple and automated like oh reminder you know like these are your options and like i know mrs reek's email address but it's really hard to find the right email addresses for your teachers for your kids especially the beginning of the semester when you don't even really know if they're your exact teachers so it could be like your class your student was if we bug him enough your student was missing in this class today and then could link somehow to be able to respond to that teacher because i did old school which is incorrect that i called the office left a message a couple of days in a row saying hey can you just let the teachers know to send homework home with carmen not the right choice right because i'm sure they had 250 or 300 phone calls of sick people that week just in the high school um so they're just an easier resource i think might help i don't know and it could be the phone or computer system we'll also meet with the principals and explain ask them what some what are their ideas their it and our our whole team our technology team there's people that aren't even in you know that might be in technology or another department they have great ideas so we'll discuss that at our next cabinet meeting and see what other tools if nothing else make sure we're keeping score and understand who's suffering excessive absenteeism and when what are we doing to intervene and then what supports are provided to help them catch up academically i think those are all fair requests are you ready for move on from the okay thank you everyone asking too many questions so we we had numerous staff and mostly staff that had either coveted or coveted like symptoms or in in a probably eight or ten cases had positive cases of covet and we had staff members that had family members that had positive cases i can tell you in our we have a small staff at the at the home office we have the district maybe eight people we had four that were either had coveted or had coveted symptoms and they all came down at once and so that's why we took friday off to try to create some space and hopefully it looked like it bore out pretty good i didn't i didn't have a list or principals weren't calling me in a panic because they didn't have enough teachers so hopefully we've created a little bit of space there for them we're still operating on the premise we want to keep our schools open the next stage would be stage two which would be still provide transportation still provide meals and supervision and they would work in open learning labs we haven't had to go to that yet but if need be we can and so i i think the administration has done an outstanding job of keeping everything running we're suffering some sickness in our transportation department now and there's only so many of those bus drivers you could lose before you say we can't transport you to school so we're hoping and praying that they stay healthy we can continue keep those wheels on the bus going round and round we have had for the last eight months almost nine a committee comprised of parents teachers administration and others that are working on that alignment of our committee and looking through i mean they have they spent hours looking through different curriculum sources our effort is in english math and science is to align those efforts kindergarten through 12th grade and as it is right now we have some alignment in math at some grades we have some supports in english or math of some grades in some cases they're different and we're not aligning from one grade band to the other for instance eighth grade through ninth grade that's an important connection and so we have been committed to the board requested about a year ago year and a half ago almost two years ago that we need to align this curriculum we need to look for a bona fide curriculum that we could in our core subjects math science and english that we could rely on and so after eight months there's a whole system of math science and english that's in the hall over here that's open for ex public inspection we'll start sending out emails putting on the marquee put text messages letting people know if they want to come out and look at it it's mcgraw-hill we have fortuitously have certain systems in place with mcgraw-hill already and so there's some synergy there because you don't have to replace some of the items you're already purchasing and we're looking for a six-year window we're not looking for a one-time thing i think that was our teacher's biggest worry is that if you give me something for a year it doesn't help and then i rely on it and you can't fund it so we're using our sr3 funds to purchase this curriculum district-wide um we haven't started negotiating the price with it i'm going to start that this week they always give you a price then we start negotiating and so i'm going to negotiate as hard as i can and then after the 60-day period in advance that probably february 15th i'll have ryan grace who he and mr pico have headed up this effort as the committee chairs co-chairs give the board and at that time the community a presentation of what they did what they looked at the metrics that were used to assign points for each of these five or six systems they looked at why they arrived at mcgraw-hill why the committee recommended this one and that will probably be the better part of a half an hour to 45 minutes to an hour presentation and then all the materials will remain on inspection until the i think it's march 10th and then we would hope to have everything completed and be ready to make the recommendation at the march 22nd if i'm remem board meeting for that authorization that the board authorizes us to use those funds we'll order it and have it in place before the 2223 school year begins and that would also mean professional development that's all part of the of the whole package for six years you get professional development that's already paid in advance for your teachers teachers get access to the information in advance too so part of it's online there's a large part of it are consumable items that are given every year kids have work books that are used and we get new ones every year and that's for a six year period so i i think it's been a huge blessing that you have these coveted funds that are available and it's for learning loss and also for alignment of our curriculum our teachers have been asking for this in some way shape or form for the seven years i've been here and so i think it's going to be a big step in the right direction and providing very necessary supports to our hard-working teachers and make it a lot easier for administrators to help support that learning too any questions on that before i go on so it's like we're getting moving beyond beyond textbooks oh yeah beyond textbooks essentially is curriculum that's online that you could go and access so this will be like i'm getting an algebra one book and now i have assignments and or whatever or you'll have a key that the teachers will either have either books or a key that and the students will have access to either a consumable item like a a textbook that's looks like you know what workbook and then the teachers will have access immediately to start preparing for the curriculum and that and then stuff that's online the kids will have access to that in this for instance in math we're always using we're already using alex as be a part of this district-wide so what we had to do is get our math teachers to speak the same math language and agree to the same systems and so what we wanted to be careful not to do for instance mr butterfield there's not a better math teacher in the world and i'll tell you that because the last two years in a row every one of his kids have passed that test every one 50 out of 50.

2.6 cents starting last year in 2021 that saved approx almost 17 million dollars over the remaining life of all those bonds so it's actually pretty coincidental that we did that completely independent of this and now this project to help alleviate the space that we need we'll be coming in to right around the same time almost the same dollar amount and tax that with the money we freed up from doing the refinancing and as dr brocco mentioned earlier you know we are very conscious of the tax rates for our community um in the last three years we are proud that our tax rate has gone down 14 cents from 93 and a half to just under 84. and now here for 2022 it's 79 that will be on the people's tax bills uh when they get their bills in april i believe um now when it comes to your tax bill and everybody's tax bill you know we're just one piece of that we're the school district there's a city in the town there's the county everybody has their own sort of debt and so we're required to uh compute how much debt is out there for all what they call the overlapping district so if you live in shareville how much is the town the town's debt plus our debt plus the township's debt plus the county just and so forth and currently that stands at 216 million 15 844 we have an assessed value of just over five billion dollars here in our school district and that is the value of all the properties in our area um so if you take that uh debt amount divided by the assessed value it competes to a debt ratio of about four and a quarter this is a schedule of all of our current debt uh we have some we have pension bonds this is some qsas are some construction bonds we did in 2010 we do common school loans uh every six months that the board approves us that goes pays for our technology and we have bonds from 2014 2019 the 2020a are the the referendum bonds for the high school improtsman and you can see come we have about 10 years left on that and those go to 2032.

and so you don't want to mess that up you want to learn what's working you want to learn from david what do you need to continue doing what you're doing and how can we take what you're doing to the next level communicate vertically between the great bands and once we have that's a lot of work these teachers and the committee members have put in a lot of time and then it you know the hard work starts right when everything arrives because it's the implementation and then it's staying true and implementing these materials with fidelity meaning hey we're all in you don't have an opportunity to opt out why don't do that i do it a different way so that's why it's it's the next the hard work comes in when they start coming and making sure that you're using the materials as they were intended so we'll increase teachers efficiency they won't have to spend so much out of time class trying to find something to teach and then they can still do creative act activities basically sure it provides the foundation and all of the materials are aligned with the state standards the standards that the state says these are the roughly 750 standards you need to have of that number 100 750 whatever the number there are power standards that recur frequently in math english and science and those power standards are embedded within that curriculum too and it gives the teacher a chance to focus on oh they need to understand these concepts in order to be successful so it's not a function of teaching to the test it's a function of teaching those skills that they need to succeed academically and they do align with the standards and so that you're going to do better on the assessments that you're that you're given to any questions on that we'll have that presentation for april 15th is that the right date mary february i said april that's tax day right february 15th thank you mary the next thing is and and we are not teaching this year because we have we're going through a process starting probably in april we're going to uh the new statute that the board adopted we suspended the instruction of sex education this year we're going to look at the program we have right now and the committee which comprise the community members parents students administrators and teachers will decide is this effective here's what we've been doing and these are the great bands that get it are there any changes needed and that committee will come up with recommendations prior to the start of the 22-23 school year and then we'll implement whatever the committee and the board ultimately if it approves it that's what we'll use we're we've instituted a campaign we're really putting a lot of effort into the tax credits tax credits can be used for the next three years for anything school related clubs extracurricular co-curricular meaning sports and music and fine arts robotics cte class supplies you can target you can direct those any way you want it and that can be done that 2021 contribution can take place until april 15 to 2022.

and everything else is being paid off uh before that so the this proposed lease amounts um you can see we're currently we're at that you know 37 cents with nothing else on the books this would be the only thing left on the debt side this is similar chart but is a 10 year projection even though some of these amounts here in the common school loans none of this stuff has incurred because we only do those every six months at a time but um i think it's fair that we've been doing these every six months for the last 10 years and to say that we don't intend to replace our technology would be false so for the next 10 years we've put in dollar amounts there of to be realistic of loans that we'd have on that aspect and then finally this is a a bar graph showing all of our current debt that we have um it's lower than it was when we went for our building project so we're happy about that and you can see um 26 we do have a little bit of a drop and that the big drop occurs when the high school and prospect bonds are paid off and then we have a big drop there as things currently stand at this time we can't predict of what's going to happen in the future so the green bar at the top represents the little piece that would be paid over the next 20 years for this big expansion project and that's all we have so that's just our presentation for tonight at the next board meeting uh we'll kind of give a summary of this again and then we would have um possibly for comments and then there'll be some resolutions for the board to pass and that will just be the second step of multiple after that so does the board or anyone have any questions at this time yeah thank you i believe we are still on with you mr james [Music] okay my next item is we just finished the end of the quarter and so as i do at the end of every quarter i give a summary to our financial position to the board it's kind of similar to what we did a little while ago except this is for uh calendar year 21.

so we're really trying to get that message out our revenues in that account have dropped significantly last year the district infused a hundred thousand dollars that we really didn't have and had to cut other areas to support transportation and lodging and meals and equipment for fine arts and sports we won't have the budget capacity next year we can make that up with tax credits so the schools are working with their clubs and teams and we're trying to get the message out with the community if you haven't yet made your contribution tell us where you want it to go and if you have a tax liability reduces that amount and i think when people understand it we're making it easy too you can do it online going right online tax credits you can issue it if there are people that have outstanding equipment we still have sixty seven thousand dollars we're working to get back you can pay your fee through tax credit and the first drop down is damaged equipment so you can use that as well so that that is an ongoing you'll hear a lot about that in the coming days and weeks right till the 15th of april are there any questions on that can we and do a little bit better in marketing on how our we use those funds because i've heard you know through the grapevine in the community that a lot of people are unwilling to contribute to the tax credits for us and they're maybe take sending it to veterans village or something like that because veterans village will say we did this with it in our school it's just like a global fund and they just don't know where their money is going and ours when you donate you have to say where it goes it doesn't go into a global fund you have to say right but they feel like i donated did it happen like we bought xyz sporting you know so they just need to know that their money is going someplace instead of going to some fictitious area even though you have to earmark it because i think that people are saying i haven't seen my money being used the way that i thought it would be used so i'm not donating so i've heard that frequently over the last couple of months well i'll talk to you better i'll talk to you individually but what i could not commit to is returning a report to everybody that makes any donation no the tax credits only 200 per person per person right it's not like a donation to it it's just 200 per person so my wife and i we can only donate 400 to that that tax credit right so we just need to say our tax credit dollars have been used for programs or things such as this so they just need to know what it's going for because everyone just thinks it's going into somebody's pocket okay so what yeah and that that's a fair comment so what we're trying to do in the messaging your tax credits like on the marquee fine art sports clubs that that is that message we're trying to get out there you're right we want to make sure there's there's a lot of misinformation going around and so want to make sure that people are assured that if you earmark it for the music program and you want it to go to dr theresa dick that's where it goes goes to her students want to go to sports it goes into sports absolutely absolutely well as we paid for 250 000 miles you know for our sports teams you know what i mean so each child you paid for 500 miles per child you know so you could say stuff like that where they think okay this makes sense yeah absolutely if i know that i what i'm saying is accurate absolutely but we we can do and and must do a better job of expressing the uh the appropriate uses for that fund and then find a way to return and report and say for for this year for instance our goal is a hundred thousand dollars to support high school and junior high athletics and fine arts both transportation supplies all the things that they need equipment and if we hit that goal it would be wise to come back to the school board and said hey with tax credit dollars we just invested twenty thousand dollars in equipment for girls this and that and boys and that and this is where it went you're right that would be that would be wise to do like we're trying to get a hundred thousand dollars then people would be more willing to donate people just need to have a purpose and a goal and then i think that we'll be able to raise it and a way to keep score and let them know how we're doing on it that those are all good comments to continue our program because we're going to use this for bussing whatever absolutely part of the approach is we're having our teams say email your grandparents aunts uncles and everybody in state and uh every school in the country is doing that they are you know your grandpa believe me with 23 21 grandkids i get an email from a grandkid almost daily say hey grandpa can you do this you're very expensive the the uh there's two other things the last the second the last thing is i want to report back on the love kitchen which is functioned as a great community support for i think 35 years it is transitioning to the community kitchen and a lady named don and don plaza ricketts is the co-founder or and founder of a 503c a non-profit to help out raise some money their target is to raise about seventy five thousand dollars the building has suffered deferred maintenance for all those years the school is not in a position nor would it be appropriate to say here here's taxpayer money we're going to invest in a building that students don't learn and we wouldn't do that and we shouldn't we don't but we must insure it and part of that insurance has if it suffers damage because of water and some of those things we had some pipe damage freezing and that kind of thing so we have about 25 000 worth of coverage but there's a need of closer to 80-100 so there's a shortfall significantly that the this group is working to make up and so don's working with local businesses and leaders and members of the community to say we have it we want to open this up in order to do it we have to purchase some new equipment we have to do some construction work in here and so she's really done a wonderful job of communicating the district is more than willing to happy if you remember we've always leased the building for a dollar but it has to be a cost neutral situation for the taxpayer in the district and so the liability insurance utilities all of those things have to be absorbed by the foundation and she didn't blink and i said sure i'll go raise a hundred thousand dollars we'll get it done i'm thinking it's probably going to be april or may she might surprise us but that's where we are with it we're supportive of it we just don't have the you know the resources nor the frankly wouldn't be appropriate use of of school funds to invest a bunch of money in a building that students don't use but i i'm excited about that that that partnership we have and just finally you know there's a narrative going around how public schools are failing it couldn't be more wrong our teachers and our administrators and our bus drivers and our food service people have never worked harder so i've got a 120 adam reeks and jesse reeks i've got they're good people stephanie conan johnny had seen an article and that i cheered briefly and you know stating that destroy public schools you're going to destroy 500 000 mills that have been distributed you're going to destroy kids that are now at elite air force academies west point columbia a good percentage of the goes npc uh three of the kids that are installing a floor in my house came from jim rice's uh what is that chuck cabinet making we now have construction i don't want to hear about how public schools are failing and how teachers are failing this i don't buy it what i will tell you they've never worked harder and so what these people what they will do is all they can do and they show up every day to help kids period they don't show up to have controversy they don't show up to fill uh kids minds with things that are going to bug their parents that's not their job it's not what they do they show up to help kids and they do it every day and they do it really well and so i've never been more proud and board members can be proud of our teachers and our support staff we've got the best if there's no other questions i'm done with my report thank you dr wright appreciate your emotion and i'm sure that emotion is felt by the staff and faculty of this school uh if there's nothing further the next um item on the agenda is the announcements and we only have one announcement that our regularly scheduled board meeting will be february 15th at five o'clock at this location this next month so i have a motion to adjourn emotion from check second from jennifer jennifer in the mask all in favor of adjournment we're adjourned thank you all so much

the first spreadsheet you'll see in your board packet is for our education fund again that is our main fund that we're all of our classroom expenditures on going across for this on the revenue side you will see that we had approximately 63 million dollars worth of revenue you have to have those first three lines together overall we had in this calendar year just under 64 million dollars of receipts and revenue into the education fund on the expenditure side we chart all of our expenditures mainly as you can see mainly comprised of salaries and benefits this year it was a transition year in which the state developed new um accounting codes for various different positions we used to just have one code that was for certified staff and a second code that was for our non-uh non-certified staff and it was pretty simple but because of some legislative changes now we separate separates out certified staff members who are actually in the classroom teaching as compared to guidance counselors and speech therapists and school psychs there a separate line we differentiate between the aids and the paraprofessionals in our classroom as compared to other classified staff so that's why you will see from january through all excuse me january through july lots of those lines are zero but really they're just embedded in the other rows and now they're broken down in total we've been very consistent um let's see so in total for this calendar year our education fund as i said had just under 64 million dollars worth of revenue and our expenditures were 63 million uh in essence almost 500 000 so for a delta of 500 000 to the good um that's probably that's like around one percent so we're pre uh we're not the pat ourselves on the back but we will as i said we want to keep that as close to possible close to the margin because we really don't want to you know raise the cash balance in in this fund too much any questions on that particular uh spreadsheet up in the upper right-hand corner yes certified wages percentage of state support that 49.2 is yes that related to that 48 we here that is that is related to that 45 legislation that was passed in the in the um in this spring and so even a school district like us that puts a high emphasis on that we are very close to that 49 we're at 49.2 percent um as the and the one of the reasons is for that is that that as we've said before that only includes the base salary of actual teachers in the classroom it doesn't count the taxes the teachers retirement and all the things that we are required to pay on top of that and so we're working with legislators to see if you know it's a give and take one we'd like to show what the true total compensation is for that teaching staff uh two we like to include everyone who's in the collective bargaining unit um and three we like to see the percentage actually risen and if we're going to add these other costs into it you know maybe it should be a higher number as well so we'll see what comes out of the general assembly on that but yes i wanted to bring that to the board's attention and the number right above that one it's our education to operations fund transfer percentage um that general assembly wants that to be no more than 15 percent um that is the amount of state revenue you get how much you transfer to your operations fund uh we are at seven and a half we're not even in the ballpark of where we're having issues that we're keeping more money here in the education fund and and rob i i'm sure that you've explained to us why this percentage came about the certified wages percent but can you refresh my memory why did why did this surface what was going on um i think there's just been a push to put more dollars to the classroom and this is a way of knowing that it's going there yeah 45 literally i want to say just came out of the air there was a year a little over a year ago there was a governor's commission on teachers compensation of trying to figure out ways to get more dollars to the classroom and in there it said they rec they had this 45 recommendation um the problem is that what the data that the commission use is different data than what is currently in code for the definition of a teacher and what's being used so the commissioner recommended 45 but they were using a higher amount of expenditures in that in that calc so um it was very last minute in the session last year um i believe you know there's lots of of people in the general assembly who may not have had a full concept of how this is really working in the weeds and that's why i'm thinking this probably is a good chance i might get cleaned up a little bit this year so thank you okay uh oh and the other thing is there on the top in the middle i show what our average cash balance was again i talked about earlier you know somewhere in that 10 to 15 percent range we are averaging 11.75 percent at any given time in this fund so it's right where we want to be um okay so then we'll just move on to the second chart and um or spreadsheet um because in reality now since 2019 we can't just look at our education fund because we transfer money from there into operations we have operating referendum money all those three funds together really play into how we operate on a everyday basis and they have to be looked at as a whole to really give a better perspective in my opinion of how the school district's doing and so this one is the same snapshot except it adds the education ops fund rev referendum operating and the rainy day funds all together i'm not going to go into all the details here you can look at it and ask me any any questions but in total for those funds we had revenue on the far right you can see about eighty nine thousand three hundred eighty nine million three hundred thousand dollars and our expenditures were just under 85 million seven hundred thousand so we operate about three and a half million to the good this year uh that is good it's a little bit again the timing issue we talked about because we get a lot of tax revenue right there in in december um but because one of the other reasons for that larger operating to the good was because of the money that the general assembly is putting into into the school funding formula now and what we've turned and did is we're able to give a good raise to our teaching staff this year who you know they're going to get paid that out throughout the rest of their contract here so um we did a retro pay in december to get them from september through december but then that will be spread out you know for the rest of the time so um again we're we're in a healthy position uh here for the close of the calendar year and uh any questions on anything on here okay now thanks for keeping it all together though for us good job all right moving on my next item is um i guess because dr braco and i were talking and and there seems to be a misunderstanding with a lot of our legislators about this so your unit the iasbo is going to be working on that clarity and they have been and i know also in conjunction with the isba and the superintendents association now what happens with that we never we have no idea but you know we're trying we're working so okay my next item is to seek your approval to transfer on the fee portion of a textbook rental fees from the transfer from the textbook rental fund to the education fund just to remind the board when a family pays their textbook rental bill there's the course fees and then there are general fees for agendas and ids and technology while those general fees are paid out of our education fund the class fees are paid out of our textbook rental fund but all the money is sitting in our textbook rental fund so what we do is um every six months we run reports and we do uh we find out how much was collected uh for fee money and so from july 1st to december 31st it was a hundred fifty two thousand seventy nine dollars and twenty seven cents and so in order to follow the money as i say uh requesting to transfer those funds from the textbook rental fund to the education fund move to approve the transfer of the textbook money funds second we have a motion and we have a second any discussion an example of the fee money would be agendas student ids technology fees to pay for um not so much that that we don't charge the that's not on the student's bill so our work workbooks that go with textbooks considered a fee or a textbook now say it again the workbooks that would go with that that's that's still that's not part of this that's that money stays in the textbook rental fund anything that's okay the book you know your science kits your novels things like that are they're all part tied to a specific course they'll stay in the textbook rental fund got it thank you okay all right all in favor motion passes thank you my next time is a secret professional leave request um for myself that is presented in your work pack so moved we have a motion second we have a second by dr medlin any discussion all in favor aye motion passes thank you and then finally i seek your approval on the donations that were listed in your board packet so moved you have a motion by dr malcolm sec dr meddling will second it any discussion you know the gender or the the kind the kind donation done by debbie and rosie at grimmer middle school to pay food service debt of children can anyone do that that would like to do that sure we'll just need to reach out to you um it's probably best to reach out to our food service department because they can have a better handle on um you know i don't know students individual food service balances so they'd be the ones to reach out to all right thank you all in favor aye all right motion passes thank you all right thank you it's all i have all right we will move on to our public comments portion just want to remind those that will be addressing the board this evening we ask that you refrain from personal attacks or derogatory statements about any school employee fellow community member student or anyone else while they're in attendance or not the board will allow each person three minutes each with a total of 30 minutes when you are down to the last 15 seconds mrs mucha will announce that your time is nearing completion after 30 minutes i will pull the board to see if they would like to continue to hear public comments if the board agrees we will do this for each 30-minute segment if we continue to hear the same things as previous speakers we reserve the right to end all public comments for the evening and you come to the podium if you please state your name and your address first speaker is mrs jablonski good evening me again uh as i have promised oh my name is margaret jablonsky i live in crown point on matthew street as i have promised before i will keep showing up as long as it takes for us to feel like we're being taken seriously i know too well what the world looks like when those in power ignored the citizens it's not pretty and i'm not gonna play that game i'm curious to see if any of you are beginning to see the light have any of you started questioning the guidance issued by the public health and government agencies so easily influenced by powerful lobbies please refer to the cdc quarantine recommendations and how to delta airlines communication with cdc affected public health policy are you aware of how the definition of fully vaccinated has become very fluid and tentative do you not find it fascinating and thought provoking that cloth masks that so many have been wearing are now proven worthless we have been saying that for months these suggestions and many others are not have not been grounded in science and are very arbitrary fear driven and ridiculous if you ask me which i know you're not um this has gotten a little messy is the school board the new community's health and safety protector making allowances for natural immunity and what its recognition could mean for attendance numbers we are constantly reminded of how these issues have become political here's a novel idea how about you remove politics and politicians from your decision-making process by law the ball is in your court you as the local school board have the authority to make choices best for the kids in your district well please do start making decisions that are actually based on science and common sense start allowing options and choices respecting individual freedoms and different circumstances it is after all what this country was founded on what its citizens have prided themselves on and what builds a just society isn't it we the parents have certainly done their homework for you all you need to do is listen to quote martin luther king the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in a moment of comfort and convenience but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy make sure you stand on the right side of history because the tide is turning stop mandatory masking stop unnecessary quarantines stop discriminating the unvaccinated start focusing on the kids thank you mr buckman [Applause] mr good evening um robert i live on 83rd lane and crown points um i don't know i kind of like to have a theme when i come and talk so i guess my theme today would be incentives incentives work um when you incentivize a hospital to mark a patient as you know their death is coveted related we've seen from the cdc that they can't tell you the difference between a covet-related death and a death with cobin if you get hit by a bus they mark you as a coveted death they get an extra dollar when the bank you work for tells you okay it's time to get vaccinated or you will no longer be employed i get vaccinated i'm not going to risk my my family's comfort on my principles when a school board has a decision to make about this free money that they hand out um and you just gotta jump through maybe a couple of hoops i believe it's to the tune of eight million five hundred and ninety two thousand dollars and you just gotta fill out some paperwork and make these kids wear masks i think we've we've determined it's not based on the health of the children it's based on keeping them in class or perhaps the amount of paperwork that you have to fill out because it's too much paperwork to fill out i mean let's switch to optional um i think again we've so john mayo clinic came out and said the masks are 5 effective which i mean makes sense you can choose one or the other right either the ox the children can get oxygen through their masks or the kovid can't escape it's it's one or the other i don't believe masks work one way um actually i think i've come to the end so um i guess i'll leave it with just one more little comment i i don't blame you for for wearing masks i really don't i would be embarrassed to show my face as well good night mrs abel before the next speaker i just want to clarify that the money we're getting in s r funds has nothing to do with mass mandates thank you hi um christina 904-32 place in st john first of all i'd like to state that i've never met any disrespect to any of you the teachers or any of the school employees all anyone has ever wanted this entire time is the best for their children with that being said myself and others have presented you all with studies facts and other doctors opinions that have been suppressed by politicians in the media medicine medical advice should never have been politicized yet here we are in this gigantic mess these days are getting second op these days the days of getting second opinions are gone and we are in a one-rule order under fouchy because he is science i'm glad to hear that legislators are finally doing something but when we told you that the pcr tests were inaccurate unable to identify between code and the flu we were wrong when we told you that hospitalizations and deaths were overestimated and that they were including everyone that came in and tested positive regardless of the actual reason for the hospitalization or death we were wrong when we told you that cloth masks and basic surgical masks that even stated on the box that they did not protect from covid were not working we were wrong yet here we are as the media is finally changing their tune the ptr pcr tests are inaccurate and rare and rarely used now because they cannot differentiate between the flu and covet the cdc and fauci have admitted that covet deaths and hospitalizations have been overestimated as by as much as 75 percent there is a huge difference between being in the hospital or dying of covid versus dying with covid added to the fact that the pcr tests weren't working properly doling out huge amounts of false positives and now on top of the medical advisors it's one of the top medical advisors of cnn has finally admitted that cloth masks are and i quote not appropriate for this pandemic it is not appropriate for omicron it was not appropriate for delta alpha or any of the other previous variants either because they are we are dealing with something that's airborne they are nothing more than facial decoration look at this picture this this is real life right now this is how our country looks right now are you proud of that what we are doing to these kids is ridiculous i'm not sure if any of you watched governor holcomb's state of the state address the other night but if you did you would have seen him unmasked walking through crowds of people hugging and shaking hands not a worry in the world so why are we literally allowing everyone else to go about their normal lives while we continue to enforce masking of our of our children we have been right the entire time and i will tell you we were also right about the medical psychological and developmental effects of prolonged masking of children reduced oxygen is real the headaches the fatigue reduced ability to concentrate drowsiness etc is real the developmental delays and learning to read and sound out words properly is real and every symptom is not coveted i urge you to listen to us the people that have known what is really going on the entire time because we listen we looked back beyond the headlines and listened to the doctors be the chain listen to the other doctors be the change be the leaders protect the children from harm do it now before legislation does it show that you guys can do this thank you thank you miss allison kwakowski good evening allison kweikowski 1701 stillwater i'm a parent of a first grader and a school psychologist so what is the end game here that children are not spreaders of this virus that masks do not prevent transmission due to air flowing through and around the mass constantly that natural immunity helps fight infection better than vaccine-induced immunity that eating healthy changing your sedentary lifestyle can improve your chance of not having a severe case of covid that's what we have known what we now know is that mass contribute to lack of oxygen speech and developmental delays mental health problems and fear schools across the country are massless and are functioning just fine that professionals who are censored for sharing supposedly inaccurate data and information were right that the virus spreads not only through the unvaccinated but the vaccinated as well that all the ingredients in the vaccine have not been revealed and people are having adverse reactions and dying from the vaccine that valid long-term clinical trials of the vaccine have not been completed that 75 percent of the people have died from covid had at least four core morbidities testing is inaccurate that just because case numbers increase from faulty testing guts have not the hospitals are filled with as many vaccinated people as unvaccinated that most children in hospitals are there with kovid not because of covid that this virus will be endemic just like the flu according to our savior fauci himself so why are we continuing to mask our children who are not spreaders of the disease mask our children even when everyone who wants to be vaccinated already is to severely impact our children's social emotional and physical well-being to harm our children because of your fear to follow guidelines that don't even make sense and keep changing to support the narrative that is falling apart at it seems when is it going to stop when this legislation tells it to or are we going to stand up and say this is the end because this is what is destroying our children not the virus thank you miss sherry true sheree drew 164 promos drive dire thank you um last time i was here i talked to you guys about leadership and accountability and a really funny thing happened glenn younkin got sworn as the governor of virginia and he made promises to the people that voted for him and you know what he did on the first day in office he signed an executive order to put the masks optional and make the parents in charge of it and i thought wow that is real leadership that's someone that took a stand someone that stood behind what he promised people kind of like when you guys sent us a survey and 70 some percent of us wanted optional yet you went against what we wanted and did your own policy do you see the difference between real leadership and what he did the other thing i have is i have a seven-year-old son he has spent more time wearing a mask at school than he has without he doesn't even know what his friends faces look like it's cool he doesn't even know what his teacher's faces look like he doesn't even know how to respond when people ask him a question because no one can see that he comes home every day and asks me mommy when do you think i won't wear a mask at school because i find it really odd when i see my friends everywhere else i don't have to even a seven-year-old can figure out that this is all for theater and the last time i checked in second grade we don't have theater classes so end the theater now and unmask the kids we will now move on to board comments the consideration of future agenda items mr marshall i'm sorry i i wasn't but we're on to board comments okay comments from the board yes normally when another fellow board member makes the comment directed specifically at me based on what she is talking about i let it slide but since i've been called out as the author of the slating motion at our previous board meeting which i initiated individually with no collusion with other board members and for her to categorically label me as being very unprofessional i take issue with that thank you dr madeline thanks mrs logan for all your years at vivid you you were wonderful um i look forward to talking about um goals for lake central school corporation again thank you dr malcolm um yes you know thank you for coming out and speaking again and it is very frustrating very very frustrating i i know that if i had the power to change it i would change it but we just don't because we live in a system and all those systems are interconnected whether we like it or not you know it's just the way it is in the in the state of indiana i will tell you that i recently returned from a trip to louisiana and mississippi the hot places in the area supposedly went to a basketball game with lsu in tennessee saw maybe 10 masks went to visit my brother in the hospital massacre not even required in the hospital in mississippi so it was a whole different feeling down there than what we have up here and i don't know the source of all the overreaction i call it overreaction that we have in indiana i don't know the source of it i do know that there's some inaccurate data out there from the get-go that was never corrected by our county but moving on um dr medlin i'm curious do you know because i know you keep track of cdc you're you're good about this is there a change in leadership at the cdc recently not that i know okay but the only reason i ask is because it seems like different messages are coming out than came out before and i guess i didn't pay attention to the speaker in past and i i was just curious if this new lady that is speaking has always been do you does anybody else know about that leadership there at cdc yeah they changed when the administration changed oh did they okay all right thank you i did not know that um and um yeah so we're part of the a system and that's just the way it is and uh [Music] so i would like to say thank you to mrs logan for all your years of service and thank you for bibbidge and uh good luck to all the winter teams heading into final meets dac tournaments and sectionals i also want to wish our juniors and seniors attending winter formal a safe and fun evening and with that we will turn it over to dr veraco board calendar of future activities our next meeting is here on february 7.

graduating class of 2021 and was part of the engineering program first i figured i would tell you about my duration at cctech over the past four years during my time at cc tech i was a national honor society president student council president a tech ambassador an early college high school graduate and i was also involved in many other clubs and organizations i was awarded a full academic scholarship at thomas jefferson university where i'm currently studying architecture in a five-year program and i will be beginning my masters in real estate development in this upcoming fall i am very proud of these accomplishments but i must humbly say that i do not give any credit to anyone other than the cctac administration and guidance department [Applause] i was appointed president of the national honor society here at cctech in 2020 right as the covenant 19 pandemic swept the nation as you all know we were sent home from school and were not really given an idea when we were returned as upperclassmen we were shaken and not sure what the future entailed as a chapter we knew it was our responsibility to echo confidence and positivity into the minds of our peers the community that we forged through this tough time was unbreakable and i personally was determined to lead our chapter to accomplish our goals and our agenda regardless of the circumstances through our national honor society chapter's relentless efforts while abiding by the cdc in school guidelines our chapter conducted a volunteer preschool reading a canned food drive for the red cross and we started a fun for the ronald mcdonald house as well we laid the foundation for the following chapters to pursue whatever agenda they may create for themselves the cctech national honor society is a prestigious community full of scholarly students from various programs these students are seated before you do their hard work both inside and outside of the classroom as individuals they are strong and collectively there's no limit to the success that this chapter can achieve this society is meant to showcase the top caliber students of cctech and to provide a platform for these students to better themselves and their school as a whole being a member of the cctech national honor society prepared me to lead by example and unlock my full potential i'm sure that it will do the same for each and every student being inducted tonight thank you very much and i cannot wait to see all this chapter achieves [Applause] [Music] [Applause] thank you luke today's ceremony indicates the continuing emphasis on excellence that we represent for our school and community throughout the year members of our chapter serve as role models for other students our chapter members are leaders in many organizations both academically and professionally we serve our school and community through local and national programs such as interact skills usa student council hosa model congress and robotics just to name a few in our inaugural year of nhs membership our students completed over 200 hours of community service and raised over 1 000 for the ronald mcdonald house of south jersey we are proud of this record of accomplishment imitation and national honor society is the greatest academic honor that can be bestowed in order to be invited for membership the candidates have earned at least a 3.7 overall grade point average however our inductees have diverse talents and interests far beyond academics they have proven their willingness to engage in a multitude of charitable causes and service projects each new member has taken on leadership roles in extracurricular organizations classroom activities and job responsibilities since their freshman year we are proud of their accomplishments over the past two years they have demonstrated themselves through their actions to be true leaders in every aspect of the word at this time i would like to introduce the president of national honor society pauline pimsa [Applause] we are gathered here to formally recognize those students who have been selected by the faculty of our school for completing their candidacy and being inducted as new members in our nhs chapter we are proud to invite 61 deserving junior and seniors to join the cumberland county technical education centers chapter of the national honor society as we welcome these new members i am very excited to see how each of these students will utilize their unique talents to collaborate as we continue to build our national honor society chapter while being inducted here tonight is a great honor it also comes with a responsibility to uphold and exemplify the four national honor society pillars of scholarship leadership character and most importantly service the candles before us symbolize these pillars we proclaim to all in attendance that membership in the cumberland county technical education center's chapter of the national honor society has been earned by these candidates through the effective demonstration of the four virtues that serve best standards for the society we will now review these pillars for the candidates our current parliamentarian sydney taylor would like to candle for scholarship denotes a commitment to learning a student is willing to spend hours in reading and study knowing the lasting benefits of a cultivated mind we should continue to learn even when formal education has ended for human education ends only with the end of life knowledge is one great element in life which leads to highest success it can be acquired in only one way through diligence and effort learning furnishes the lamp by which we read the past the torch guiding us to understand the present and the light that illuminates the future candidates have the charge to continually expand their world through the opportunities inherent in scholarship our current treasurer alexandra basile would like to candle for service service can be established in the routine of the day's work where many opportunities arise to help others both at school and in the community a willingness to work for the benefit of those in need without monetary compensation or public recognition is a quality we seek in our membership and promote for the entire student body we are committed to volunteering our time and talents that the creation of a better tomorrow our current secretary skyler cooper will light the candle for character character is a force within the individual that distinguishes each person from others it creates for each of us our individuality our goodness it is that without which no one can respect oneself nor hope to attain the respect of others it is this force of character that guides one through life and once developed grows steadily within character is achieved and not perceived it is the product of constant thought and action the daily striving to make the right choice the problem of character is a problem of self-control we must be in reality what we wish to appear to others to be rather than to see by demonstrating such qualities as respect responsibility trustworthiness fairness caring and citizenship we may hope to prove by example that we value character our current vice president aaron pritchett will light the candle for leadership [Music] leadership should exert a wholesome influence on the school and take an initiative in the classroom and in school activities the real leader strives to train and aid others to reach their common goals of success the price of leadership is sacrifice the willingness to yield one's personal interest for the interests of others a leader has self-confidence and will go forward when others hesitate no matter what power and resources may exist in a school community or nation they are ineffectual without the guidance of a wise leader leadership is always needed thus to lead is a meaningful and vital charge to each of our members please welcome national honor society president pauline klisma to lead the incoming members in national honor society pledge thank you at this time pull the inductees please stand raise your right hand and all right we're all set go for it okay i'd like to uh call the uh a regular meeting of the brookfield board of education for january 19th to order please join me for the pledge of allegiance i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and unity for all all right um so so first up is our roll call we have all seven members of the board of education uh here tonight we're doing this meeting by zoom considering the ongoing pandemic situation hopefully the infection rate will uh will turn down shortly and we'll go back to in-person meetings um uh so first up on our agenda tonight is a student spotlight for center elementary school and uh dr brill do you want to uh uh introduce or you know or do you want to have friends i gotta tell you bob i'm excited we have uh mrs diamond here and i see lots of our center school staff on and it's about the kindergarten bookstore so i'm gonna turn it over to mary rose to introduce for us if that's okay with you all right perfect good evening everyone i'm mary rose diamond proud principal of center school and i have with us this evening we have alyssa larson and nancy summerfeld two of our fantastic and amazing uh kindergarten teachers and i'm going to share with you um can i uh eric can i hear that i think i can yeah yeah sure yep you're all set excellent thank you so i'm going to um we just have a little slide show that we put together to share some things with you it is uh given that we're on zoom and um it's a little later in the evening we do not have students with us this evening however we have a video to share with you of some of the work that they've been doing so again uh we're highlighting our kindergarten bookstore um and so i wanted to just point out to everyone and kind of make this direct connection with the curriculum work that we've been doing for the past four or five maybe six years um uh and really that we we again um are taking the adult learning um that we we've been fortunate enough to to uh have garnered over the last several years and really applying our learning um in support of student learning so again um this is all connected back to the curriculum work that we've been we've been doing um as grade level teams um in okay to four continuum really with the support of dr alcock um uh initially and then also with dr ruby and and devarious um we again we're you're gonna see the progression of beginning with the standards uh were you utilizing the resources from our curricular tool and then really embedding opportunities for feedback from both teachers and peers opportunities for reflection as well goal setting for students um and we hear a lot i think the the term this of you know self-navigating learners um and we're really starting to lay the groundwork for that again at the age of four and five um in our kindergarten students in terms of how we are promoting their ownership and really teaching them how to navigate their learning for themselves so we start with skills we move to our learning targets that are student-facing so students are learning and and seeing what they are able to do and setting those targets for themselves and the next step for us is also then giving them some learning strategies so that's really where we're we're going to be focusing some of our work um also as i'm again mentioning uh moving toward those the the three components of cell navigation that the regulation the evaluation the motivation you see that's all kind of embedded within this uh this project that our teachers have presented and provided for our students um here is a a very long list of all the standards that are incorporated and that played a part in some way in building student learning that were again incorporated into this unit and specifically into the kindergarten bookstore project which is the context for the learning for our students [Music] with it around these standards so that the again we start with the standards the context is really where that the uh engagement piece comes in and where the application of skills comes in so i'm going to turn this over to alyssa yes are you okay alyssa to talk a little bit about the process yes i just want to you know highlight it briefly because um i i had the students kind of really explain it to you in the video because i thought it meant more that they understood the process and were able to explain back the process to you but this was our show-and-tell unit basically it's one of our units that we have developed through the curriculum writing process and it works a lot on listening for sounds that they hear in words and using their inventive spelling um labeling spacing all those kinds of things um writing for for a reader is a really big thing like teaching them that they're not just writing to put letters on paper but like actually for a purpose and matching words to their illustrations so it's not like you know they're writing about you know a beach and then drawing a snowman so you know teaching them that all these things come together um so they were then provided they were working on it for a little while and then they provided some context like you know you are actually going to be writing this for someone to read it you get to be the author just like all these books we've ever read now you are the author and it was really exciting to see this go from your this is work you're making me do to be like oh my gosh like they just got so lit up and so excited for this i saw in my class specifically the production tripled the quality of their work i mean it was at least double what it was before they worked so hard they wanted to make sure it was readable they wanted to make sure it was neat they wanted to put all the sounds that they could hear and they just they just kept asking every day when's the bookstore when's the books i had to put it on my morning meeting calendar because they were so excited to be the author and share the writing but even more so excited to be able to buy books with what we called kindergarten cash and read their friends books and i think it was equally exciting to get to go into another classroom since that was like what we get to go in a different room so they were very excited about this whole idea that there was a purpose to what they were doing um so they worked really hard to write and publish that and earn their kindergarten cash in my classroom i made a big deal about me being the publisher and you'll hear one student talk about let's talk about going to see the publisher um and the publisher bought the books from them and put the books in the bookstore so they were really learning about the process of how it worked and then on the very last day which was the week before the holidays i must say teaching in december especially kindergarten is usually very difficult um there you can imagine they're very excited for what about to happen but i have never had such a productive month of december ever as in my entire years of teaching kindergarten in first grade i'll even lump that in there um it's been it was amazing to see the amount of work that they put out the amount of joy they had to be working on it and even the fact that they would be asking to work on it during their play time and during their free time can i work on my book like it was just really exciting to see the passion come out and that's what the whole context really is the context is to teach them you're not just doing this to do it there's a reason why and um to put some passion into them and it was i mean i've never loved teaching kindergarten more than i did through this so i'm so sorry my controls got stuck let me go back here okay sorry about that nancy is there anything you wanted to add before we watch the video you wanna wait until afterwards um i i just wanted to add that this writing project and the culminating bookstore celebration really fostered a sense of community and connection among our students and that's something that of course we can't always connect in the ways that we were used to doing pre-covered but the students really felt like they were part of something bigger and just one cute little example we went across the hall and we were looking through the books that the students across the hall had written and one of my students just gasped and shouted oh i think they're learning the same sight words we're learning and that was just such a source of excitement for these students and and that's come up several times since then you know the other day in phonics we were blending sounds together to read words and making our sound power really strong and one of the students said do you think mrs dougherty's class is making their sound power strong today too and so they just feel very connected to those students who wrote books for them and the students who they wrote books for and just want to echo all of the wonderful things that alyssa said and i think the slideshow is really going to say it all when you see their faces and hear their voices so thank you for giving us this opportunity to spotlight our amazing learners okay here we go let's see them in action [Music] are you ready for our books [Music] the first thing we did to write our books we were the author and the illustrator we had to remember his faces [Music] we need to make the correct pictures to what we'll be writing [Music] we have to write clearly we're gonna just draw a scribbly scribble on our paper here we had to make the book good so that people [Music] okay publisher publisher there you go what's the publisher tell you he tell us to get um britney's books to them and what did the publisher give you when the publisher took your [Music] to book my books in the books [Music] [Applause] come on in okay yep you could take a look at the books you can open them up take a look just like you would at a store see what you like [Music] so [Music] all right show me your books that you bought [Music] did you have fun shopping at the book fair yeah [Music] we came to read it at the club [Music] so the excitement i think you can tell hopefully from the video and if you couldn't understand all the words that all the things that they were saying um they were describing the strategies or the the learning targets that they'd been instructed on um from teachers and and why you know what they needed to make sure that they were keeping in mind as they were developing their own books and creating their own books um what they'd be looking for in other other students books as well so they really um the the learning was evident came true for that so i'm gonna um just jump ahead and again nancy and alyssa please jump at any point um so just again we already just shared a little bit about what we noticed in terms of engagement some student self-reflection so i had the opportunity to go into classrooms while the instruction was happening leading up to the book sale and just the amount of again self-reflection of students knowing what the learning targets were and then looking at their own work and kind of measuring up whether or not they'd achieve the learning targets was was really a great thing to see in terms of students um again self-reflecting students their teachers really did a great job of giving them opportunities um to receive feedback as well as give each other feedback um and that was another um interesting thing that i noticed being in the classrooms was the kind of feedback the students were giving to each other um in terms again being related you know really directly related to the learning targets and making and what their learning had been around the particular standards and then just the application of skills again um you know taking what students what they've learned in discrete instruction and discrete lessons and then tying it all together to to create their own books was really it was really great to see i don't know i'm nancy ellis if you have anything to add in terms of what you noticed or yeah they definitely they they definitely latched on to their self-reflection especially and self-evaluation even um i remember one day when we were working one student came up to me and asked me for another piece of paper and you know i i figured they wanted to add a page to their books that's something i had taught them and i said do you need another page to add to your book and he looked at me and he goes no i have to rewrite this page and i said why do you have to rewrite this page i said well i forgot the spaces so the reader's not going to be able to read it and i definitely want to hit my learning target so the the fact that they were able to put that all together is just it blew my mind and it's funny because you do have different classes that latch onto different things this is my class that like is obsessed with that learning target if i forget it they're gonna yell at me where's my learning target what am i trying to learn today and they also vlogged on a vocab so i'm sure dr ruby likes to do that but this is my class that if i don't put those things up they're gonna tell me that they need a learning target so they know exactly what they're learning and i just i love to see that through them and then of course we're always learning and reflecting ourselves and looking to you know this is our first um you know journey into this piece of this this kind of context or this this part of the context um so there's lots of things that we you know we talked about again covered being impacting you know being an impact on on some of what are our kind of their our are what we could accomplish um and then just also kind of learning from the experience and moving forward and seeing other directions we might want to go in and that kind of thing and how to bring in other content areas as well so um that's it i just i just want to say a personal thank you to the the teachers and staff who again have have really uh stretched themselves tremendously and in some cases really stepped out of their comfort zones to make this happen and and just the the quality of the instruction that i'm seeing in the in terms of student engagement and student motivation has really um has really been phenomenal to watch um having seen this unit taught other years uh and comparison to this year it just i think everyone had a new life a new new sense of purpose um the staff as well as students it was it was really it was beautiful to see so thank you and also the board of ed for giving us the opportunity to then have all of this professional learning and really make this difference for kids so i'm gonna stop sharing go ahead maureen sorry uh i just wanted to share how impressed i am because this is exactly you know while kovit may have derailed us a little bit this is exactly where we want to go with the curriculum development we know we started as these teachers are smiling knowing that we are working with the bare minimum which is the the standards the standards are just the beginning but when we have talked at board meetings before about the identity of brookfield and context and teachers owning like i could feel like my heart's singing right right now the ownership that you have and that the children have because you know we could like some districts unfortunately we could have gone and bought some some people's services to just do a curriculum in some other place in the world and just send it to us because we purchased it but it wouldn't be ours the teachers wouldn't own it and the teachers wouldn't have the permission that we've tried to give them to uh iteratively advance the curriculum to meet the needs of the learners and then we want the students to earn it own it and that self-navigating learner that you talked about alyssa that's what we want we want kids to be going it not teachers going to kids telling them what to do but after the kids have the lay of the land from from the teacher the kids really taking hold of it and going to the teacher whether they're four years old or they're 18 years old and saying this is what i want to do with the curriculum and that's the dif one of the differences between having a an exclusive gifted program where only certain people get into the into that program and meeting the needs of all learners and allowing all children to take their work to whatever level it can be without excluding kids so i am just so pleased and so proud of the work that you're doing and you're doing this under the most difficult of conditions and those kids didn't look like their masks or whatever else is going on in the world that are adult problems was phasing them at all and you didn't either so you know bravo to you thank you so much yeah i would love to just say thank you to for all the professional development that you've given us to work towards this because uh it's just been great to be able to explore teaching in a way that felt like it mattered in more ways than i ever thought and i'm i'm finishing up my six-year program right now and i can't tell you how many times i would hear something that a district is doing and i'm like we did that like four years ago so brookfield is really ahead of the game and i was really proud to be able to say that i was from brookfield and put our good name out there like that so thank you very much for supporting us well i what i want to say is thank you for trusting the process because it's like when we started this we're in a dark tunnel and nobody could see the light at the end and we're still we're still not at that late because it's we're never going to be there because if you're really a learning community you're always going to be working to get better and better and like you two are like poster childs children for for what we're trying to do and and mary rose you know the support that you're giving because you know there are a lot of question marks you know six years ago when we started this but like these are two examples of um questioning because we should always question you just don't follow um but having faith in in our kids because and i don't know if you can add anything to this not to belabor this this point but the idea that that kids can't do this like that needs to be eradicated and it does making a difference whether they're little kids or big kids or us that if we have that they can't do it attitude then you're going to restrict yourself to a box of people just regurgitating things that we give them back but if we believe that if we challenge kids and we give them the space to think and to explore and to expand that kids can do amazing things and that's all that's what we want to do that's the environment and the teachers are just big kids if we give them the space and the freedom to do things and make mistakes and be okay like it didn't work but what did we learn from the mistake that we made and then move on but not like wallow in the mistake it's not about being chastised it's about being brave to take that chance so you guys are like change makers so thank you well this was fabulous guys so thank you very much for sharing this with us tonight and also on behalf of the board of education this is one of the best spotlights we've had in a while it was just kind of exciting and fun to watch and you can see the educational content of it every step of the way and uh man this is uh wonderful for us to see as a board but and i really appreciate your comments that uh that you know that we're ahead of the game because that's what our goal as a board has always been is to be ahead of that curve so thank you very much for coming tonight and i'll just add as a grandfather of a kindergartner at center school it warmed my heart so i wanted to thank you for that too so all right why don't we move on on the agenda thank you all for coming tonight thank you great job and tell the kids thanks all right next uh on our agenda is a report of our student representative so ben i'll turn the floor over to you and thank you for sending your uh your report in advance that was useful to read so it's very it's a nice touch you've done here all right so first off with the events coming up the only one that i had right now is the musical that's coming up it's they're doing grease this year so that's thursday march 24th to sunday march 27th is when i'll be playing um so those were the main event i had and um for administration um just a big point obviously we're very happy to have mr belanda back and obviously you don't want to like get to a point where it's like one person that you always trust and look up to but he really is that so we're very happy to have him um and just from his perspective um he's had a lot of welcome back sentiments that have been humbling um and he's getting up to speed with a lot of the different clubs and student government um and other administrators and teachers like just like that and also from that perspective we going on to like dates we have the second quarter is ending um on tuesday january 25th so then the third quarter will start the day after on the 26th and then also school counselor week will run from monday february 7th to friday february 11th so just a special thanks to all the school counselors at the high school mrs burch mrs jolio mrs cintron henry miss mccabe and mission golo so then moving on to clubs so for national honor society um we had a very successful staff breakfast actually before break so all the way back december 22nd and we received a lot of emails from the teachers just letting us know that they appreciated us coming early to do that for them um also peer counselors are working right now to get the applications in for new councils and training for the upcoming year so we're working on that right now and also brookfield youth commission just one point we had um was that we're right now currently performing research and reviewing different anonymous reporting apps that can help school administrators be more informed in terms of different uncomfortable situations students may be in so they met with dr brill and mr blanda mr renda mr conklin all on tuesday to discuss the topic of anonymous reporting so that's currently just going around and being discussed and then finally with student government actually friday this friday we have an in-school field trip which we're going to meet with different leaders across the state which for it's called the connecticut association of school student leadership conference so that'll be this friday during the day and just again continuing to plan events for seniors juniors and the entire student body that's all i have for today so an in-school field trip is basically a zoom meeting yeah basically we all meet in mr bucky's room he puts on a zoom meeting and yeah that's about it all right that's cool so i was wondering if you had to get on the bus and ride around the block and then go back into school no that would be nice oh my right also that the seniors have been busily getting college applications finalized and submitted and all that fun stuff you do in your senior year definitely yeah i've got a whole bunch of applications that i put in and then obviously everybody else is also working hard on those too a lot of early applications and regular applications so yeah it's all going on well we pass on our best wishes to everybody who's applying to college and uh it's always a challenging and emotional you know process for seniors who are graduating and moving on to the next phase and waiting to hear back especially so good luck with yours in particular so thank you and ben do you know if there's any um anything special planned for school counselor week for students to you know recognize their counselors or do anything special for them deb i can i can share i'm going to step out i know it's a student spotlight piece but that's a conversation we've looked i had a meeting with student government today the executive board we met and i want to try to keep something secret but i can tell you we're going to absolutely recognize all different members of the staff from school counselors to paris administrative support staff everybody on the appropriate days school nurses so i'm really excited to work with student government we're gonna do some really cool things so that is coming absolutely i wanted and that's one thing that i highlighted because oftentimes i feel school counselors uh to come school counselor week um they often do a lot of self-promotion and holding you know you can go to their to their offices but we need to spend some more time really recognizing all the great work they do um so absolutely that's coming yep perfect thank you all right any any questions for ben uh ben i'm just gonna hold you to it i don't know if you're there yet but when you make your final decision where you're going you do have to share with the board that's part of the uh student representative responsibility i will definitely now yeah we're looking forward to it we are looking forward to it all right so uh thank you very much ben i appreciate that um the next up is uh written correspondence okay i have delania kellman wrote regarding kindergarten entrance and laura orban bunny tessier and leslie ruggiero wrote regarding policy 6563 which concerns challenged library materials okay thank you next is approval of the board minutes i will move that the board approve the minutes from the regular meeting on january 5th and the public budget hearing on january 12th second okay it's been moved in second is there any comments edit suggestions okay hearing none all in favor of approving the minutes as written until it passes unanimously all right uh next up is our superintendent's update dr brill i'll turn the floor over to you all right thanks mr belden so um given the the presentation the spotlight tonight and uh program studies and the budget uh discussion i will keep my remarks brief i think the theme of the remarks for the most part is amazing collaboration between the town and the school district and so a couple of things outside of the realm of subcommittee reports and and other things you'll hear about tonight um the new youth officer has been hired by the police department it's going to be officer mitch heller we're excited for him to start um we're looking forward to it and we have to thank chief purcell he invited our elementary administration to be part of the interview process for the new youth officer so that was a great collaboration over the last month or so um in addition to that a very brief uh covet update for everyone um talking about collaboration um our fire marshal and uh working with our first selectmen we've been in touch with the state and demis they're actually putting in an additional order for us uh to help us with ppe um on top of that the school district received from the state uh phase two of test kits and masks we received 1895 masks and 1 890 test kits and so those are the test kits are certainly secured but they are disseminated to the schools for the nurses and or the administration to provide as necessary based on symptomatic or exposed faculty and students and then the the mascot for the most part been disseminated they're adult masks they were meant for adults so those have been disseminated more than three per staff member and we hold a little reserve just to make sure in case we're in a situation so um really some great collaboration going on there i have to thank everybody who was part of not only picking them up but bringing them back and getting them distributed they're really thankful um the next piece is the mbc meeting municipal building committee uh they've really been our main driver and partner in the building project and well i'm not gonna go deep into the building project itself because that's part of our old business on the agenda um just to let everybody know that um the nbc on february 15th happens to be a tuesday evening we'll be holding their regular meeting and techton architects will be there to do a full powerpoint presentation on the furniture and the board of ed is invited to hear that presentation and listen in and then from there on at the next board meeting on february 16th the board will be voting on the bid process going forward for the furniture for candlewood lake elementary so i want to put that out there to everybody it's exciting times and when we get to the uh candlewood lake update i'll share a little bit about our um gosh almost two hour meeting today finishing things up with mrs lavroshano and mrs diamond mrs baldwin uh pretty exciting times um in addition to that our uh 2020 2021 financial audit is complete for the full town but obviously that includes the board of education for both the town and schools it is a clean audit with no findings if anybody's interested in looking at the audit it is on the town website you're welcome to go take a look at the audit if you're so interested and then the last piece there was a couple of dollars if i could just add one thing to that sure um they at the last board of finance meeting and i attend those for the uh as a representative of the board of education um the town controller actually walked through the town audit and i have never learned so much about how the finances of the town work as i did listening to her walk through the audit report and so if anybody who's watching this is interested the video of the board of finance meeting is online and it's it's a worthwhile lesson right you learn about our assets our debt and you know what what what are the things we have to think about and uh it's just very useful so i just will add that as a comment no bob thank you you know what but you know i'm trying to i'm conscious of time but you it gives me pause and i'd be remiss if i didn't thank our finance director mr post our accounting uh supervisor mrs reynolds and of course the finance committee our board of ed finance committee and then certainly mrs marion for all the collaboration and work uh to to get us to a point where we really have such um strong financial uh in regulatory control it's it's um i think i think dr ruby talked about a dark tunnel six or seven years ago and and boy you know financially we all know the the where we were and scrutiny we were under and what what has become and that's been everybody's collaborative effort on the town side of that site it's just been incredible um extremely proud and then just the last thing i want to let everybody know thus far we've had two uh snow days so school cancellation emergency days so um there were some questions people wondering about the last day of school it's pretty easy we just add those on at this point uh in june so the last day had been monday the 13th of june um we had two days wednesday the 15th uh right now is the last day of school but we're in the dead of january right now so we'll see uh where we go from there especially with our delay tomorrow uh we'll see how the weather comes out but that's all i have mr belding i don't know if there's any questions thank you are there any uh any questions for dr burrell okay hearing none why don't we go ahead and move on the next section of our agenda is the subcommittee reports and why don't we start with uh finance and there's actually two reports on finance so mrs fernandez i'll let you give that report and um maybe do both of them at the same time yeah okay so on january 3rd during our special meeting we um discussed the 2223 operating budget um the most significant change to our budget um and i can't remember if we had discussed this in another previous board meeting but um we have a big change to to that budget and in the right direction um and we can uh reduce by approximately 164 000 and that's due to um a better estimate in our health insurance costs um the way that health insurance estimates are derived and ken you can jump in at any point if um to correct me but um we had built in a seven percent increase um which is the best estimate that at the time was derived from what the actuary state plus a half a percent and that's budgeted exactly the same way the town side does their health insurance estimates as well but recently ken was told that the insurance increase would be about three percent lower than it was originally estimated so still an increase but a slightly smaller one so we won't really know what that real number is until april but we as a committee and ken was comfortable adjusting our budget in that direction the town is doing that as well so you'll see actually a little bit later tonight that we're going to have more like a four percent increase in a health insurance cost as opposed to the seven um that alone brings the overall budget down by nearly half a percent so that was a really big um thing for the budget uh we also discussed uh finding potential savings elsewhere i'm seeing if we can scrub the budget any um anymore um also later in the agenda tonight you'll see some numbers related to the school calendar if that were to go to 180 days so we can save that discussion for then um and we also discussed and supported the transferring of an additional ten thousand dollars from our cafeteria fund into the operating budget now normally we transfer 30 000 every year but because school lunches are free this year that cafeteria fund is growing larger than it typically would and we felt an additional sum could be transferred into our operating budget that said it's important to note that what we could use that money for is extremely limited and specific but it does help with some of our expenses and then at our regular meeting on the 10th we reviewed the december financial report we are projecting at this point a surplus of almost 48 000 which is actually a lot smaller than the surplus that i reported at our uh last regular meeting the new expenses from last month that we note are more increases in regular and special education transportation we also reviewed some emerging issues so a few of the students who may be outplaced we have a few students that may be outplaced or that will not return to the district as we had hoped we're also seeing shortfalls or a potential shortfall in the excess cost grant money anywhere between 25 and 50.

i called him at six o'clock and let's start with uh roll call trustee anderson uh you're muted here trustee kelly here trustee lee just depot here and i of course i'm also here okay mr president um i apologize for not giving you uh advanced notice of this but i'd like to make a point of order and i believe that since we have a board member who has not provided proof of residency when you leave the area you are immediately no longer a board member so if that board member continues to participate in this meeting i feel that we are out of wood um okay proof of residency and then the assumption is that they are no longer in the district no longer the district means that the seat is immediately vacated so i feel that we're out of order if we continue with dr lee as a participating member of this board okay do we have a section what's that on record pardon i was asking if we have a second it's not emotion i'm just putting it on record that i uh object to the proceedings okay also i wanted to note that uh as far as it being a hostile environment i feel that uh forcing forcing us to spend funds on legal fees uh and refusing to comply with a basic requirement of being a member of the board is what is hostile uh trustee kelly this is not an agenda item so let's uh if we want to discuss this let's put one i understand i'm just protesting and protesting the proceedings objecting to the proceedings [Music] uh so moving on to the flag salute in recognition of the free speech and the following board item we welcome all and would like to note that saying the pledge of allegiance is not a requirement to participate in the business of this public board if you do not say the pledge for religious political social or personal reasons you are most welcome here as an equal participants of this board for those who would like to participate we do have a flag behind superintendent lair uh so for those participating please rise salute pledge i pledge of the united allegiance of america and to the republic you have an echo again please keep yourself muted if you're not currently speaking um item three adoption is the agenda do i have any motions okay oh second okay um i would actually like to remove some items from the consent agenda um so hang on i'm sorry steve what were you removing um so for the adoption of the agenda um i would like to remove some items from the consent agenda okay um i would like to remove item uh items one two and three and for clarity mr uh bruno you're pulling those for separate you're not fully recommended yes i i apologize you are correct i would like to be pulled for separate consideration um mr bruno i would like to pull from the consent agenda numbers seven and eight for a discussion okay and um just to clarify um the reasons i'd like to pull one numbers one two and three um because there are only four of us here for present for the meeting um it's a standard practice to pull the minutes and um item two i didn't want to put dr lee in an awkward place um with a potential conflict of interest there so i thought pulled that one and added three i'd just like to save those words so okay um did anyone else have any items they wanted to pull or anything okay do i have a motion to approve the agenda with consent agenda items one two three seven eight pulled for separate consideration a motion to approve as amended okay okay uh trustee pope moved and i believe trustee anderson seconded um so roll call vote trustee anderson aye jesse kelly i'm sorry what was that i believe you might be muted sorry trusty please pope hi and chair vote stein so uh the agenda is approved as amended okay um item four organization reports we have vanessa mason hi yes thank you for having me um cuta would like to thank everyone for the vote last month for the one percent increase in pay and the six 600 one-time allocation that we'll all be receiving our december 31st pay warrant and thank the business office for all their hard work getting every employee that extra amount of money in their check this month i know it's not easy to write a special computer program for that or however lisa and her magic department works and then um i would like to also bring up one issue that was brought up at our cta meeting today now that we are in our second week of returning back from christmas vacation and so many students who were either on quarantine or who were coveted positive and are returning from quarantine staff are just concerned about the procedures to notify staff that students are eligible to be in their classrooms at any given time so is there a procedure or protocol in which staff will be notified that say vanessa mason is eligible to return to her fifth grade classroom on thursday um because there's so many i know there's how many trees in the forest and so many possibilities out there we just want to know vanessa's eligible on this date and she has gone to the office and she's tested negative or whatever the procedure is the teachers just feel like they're flying blind we also understand that the nursing staff and the um for office staff are extremely taxed at this time and know that this is just one more thing on their plate however um staff teachers staff is just concerned about who's supposed to be in the room at any given time and that's it any questions okay thank you very much thank you okay next we have uh csa uh yes hello hello board members my name is maisha harrison and i wanted to i'm sorry i apologize for mispronouncing your name oh no that's okay that's okay i introduce myself as the president the center chapter six tenth president um i'm looking forward to representing our classified staff as well as having a mutual relationship with you all and i don't have anything to report right now because we are um we don't have our negotiation meeting so um the end of this month so um do you guys have any questions welcome thank you okay that concludes our organization report moving on to item five reports and presentations uh mike jordan good evening so i'm pleased to present that there are no williams complaint acts this term this quarter excuse me thank you very much and that concludes my report okay and then we have the advanced placement and i ready reading and math diagnostic testing results overview by mike jordan good evening again all right let me share this out this is also in your uh oh i'm host disabled participant screen sharing i i'm not able to share my screen it's gonna hold on mike eugene or i will get you squared away thank you this is also in your board packet should i have access now and my my lights keep going off in here all right let me try again there we go all right so number two there we go ah it's still not letting me share for some reason [Music] oh give me one second it's it's making me go into my system preferences now my apologies yeah i think i just freed you up too mr jordan all right let me try again [Music] zoom would like to record this computer screen i don't want to deny and i got to go in again can you see it now we do have this spring oh yes all right there we go uh so this evening i'd like to do the advanced placement our ap commonly known as ap and our iready test results scores overview uh from the beginning from september and i've put a whole lot of information in your packet uh this is meant to be an overview we could honestly spend days and days and days on this but i get it a whopping eight minutes uh so this is meant to be an overview and then i'll uh answer questions as well so i'd like to start out please with looking forward uh with advanced our advanced placement scores from last year again these are from center high school and just as a reminder uh through the california dashboard through the california department of education um we have a college and career readiness indicator and if you'll see down on the i think that's a orange down on the bottom in order to be college and career ready according to the state you must be a through g compliant as well as one of the four areas cte pathway smarter balance college career credit course or advanced placement so to be college and career ready if you are a through g compliant in the courses that you took plus you took at least one advanced placement course and you got a three or higher you will be considered college and career ready and that's where these fit in not only uh for the advanced uh excuse me for the college and career readiness indicator but many colleges will accept a three or higher for college credit uh when these students go on to college which is a huge honestly cost savings as well as it can get them through college quicker because they've already met some of the prerequisites some of those courses so they don't have to take them again all right so here's our five year summary this is right off of the uh dashboard uh for ap it's called the college board uh ap central dashboard so you can see going back to 2017 we're going to talk tonight about our 2021 results if you'll recall this is when our students were in uh distance learning so it isn't too much of a surprise that our actual our number of tests that students took was down significantly we only took 179 tests last year as opposed to 363 and as a reminder you don't have to take an ap class to take an ap test that's not a requirement anyone can take a test and we often have students who take things like art history and some ap test for classes that we don't offer the ap class is meant to prepare you for the test uh so you can see that uh we did take fewer tests our percentage of students that took that excuse me that scored a three or higher uh was down to 68 percent and we usually hover mid 70s mid to high 70s it was lower last year moving on some of the highlights if you're looking at the overview the the 1000 foot on the far right is the national average so all the test takers who took these tests and then in the middle is our average of kids who got scored at three or higher again most colleges will accept the three or higher uh for college credit so you see our calculus ap students 66 of our students who took that test scored a three or higher the national average only 51 percent of kids last year scored a three or higher so we are significantly higher than national average our computer science principles test 91 of our kids who took that test 43 or higher that's phenomenal uh that those students were able uh 91 of them were able to get three or higher on that test the national average against 66 english language uh and this combines the two english language uh tests uh 62 and a half percent uh scored a three or higher again the national average is only 57.

here b okay this is the beginning of the [Music] chico unified board of education meeting for january 19th we will begin with closed session and if there's public comment on closed session and we have received none at this point after closed session we will start the open board meeting at six o'clock and if the closed session is not completed before that time it will resume immediately following the regular meeting if if it does resume at the end of the meeting any actions taken will be posted on the website and will be available in the board meeting minutes so with that i'm going to close the mic and adjourn to closed session all right i am calling the school board meeting for january the 19th into sessions we did have closed session earlier and action was taken that action was to approve five to zero the case number 19 c v in butte county that involved chico country day and a construction company so that was the only action taken so with that i'd like to have everyone stand for the flag salute i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all thank you so we're going to have student reports are the students here so madam president with your permission i would like to switch those two items and if we can start with the superintendent's report and recognition our students are on their way here in the van but they're not quite here yet so um we can just flip those two around so everyone's okay with that okay so we will then move to the superintendent's report and recognition and i hope some of those beautiful flowers are for me i'm sure people will share so as the board is well aware we like to recognize both certificated and classified staff that have done an outstanding job at each of our regular board meetings and i would like it this time to ask marigold where we are sitting principal shawnee's heath to step to the podium hello board we're excited to recognize one of our most amazing teachers this is assistant principal margie starkey and we are here to recognize trish morgan who we tricked into getting here but when she saw her former students and current students we thought that might be a tip-off you can come on up if you don't mind you want to stand here i can kind of talk to you you're so sweet and tricky [Laughter] i let margie do a little lying this afternoon trish loves her job she loves the kids she loves the families and she's passionate about helping each child achieve great things she's a solid mentor which was how we tricked her into getting here to her peers and she loves to share her many years of knowledge and advice to help others learn and grow she feels deeply and it drives her to work hard to provide differentiated growth experiences for each student she really looks at what each child needs and finds ways to meet their individual needs she is so patient and has compassion and compassionate and unique ways of working with students that struggle to attend or follow classroom expectations she is clear and loving in her guidance for each student her communication with families is extensive and reliable the families know she is there for them and their child now that you're running carl young famous psychiatrist once said one looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings a few examples of how trish morgan is a teacher who has touched our human feelings she differentiates her students spelling tests each of them each student has his or her own list that they work on based on the assessments mrs morgan has given to her class and which spelling stage they are in this is an amazing way she meets her students needs mrs morgan makes home visits of all the coveted home quarantines mrs morgan regularly drops off work on her students doorsteps so her students don't return to school having fallen behind lastly mrs morgan was under a tight deadline to complete her district assessments and she was not able to get some of them done based on their home quarantines so she made home visits with precautions in place brought her own lawn chair to test her students in their front yards amazing mrs morgan goes above and beyond in all areas around the school including serving on multiple committees mentoring new teachers and acting as an ambassador to our school's campus whatever we ask of her she does it with gladness in her heart and a joyful smile clearly with the families on to our classified recognition i'd like to invite john carver our maintenance and operations director to the podium good evening board i stand before you on a false pretense that i needed to address the board for an assembly bill and as you know this is not true if i come up missing tomorrow you will now know who to look at the next person that will receive the superintendent's award has no clue that i'm doing this but i must say that she is very deserving of this and many more accolades for all that she does for not only maintenance and operations but the entire district and here are just a few of her duties that she performs reviews custodial unit loads for each site along with custodial site mapping state of california department pesticide regulations reporting butte county ag department reporting manages the sirs program which stands for the california environmental reporting system for hazardous materials and related data as mandated by the california health and safety as in last week darcy took it upon herself to become certified as a kova tester with the butte county department of health these are just a sample of what she does for mno and the district and i could spend a good hour talking about how much more she does for everyone like always remembering our birthdays and bringing us goodies to eat on that day but i'll stop here and leave you with this you special and wonderful that's all you are and i cannot do what i do without you here you go miss darcy thank you certificate how many years coming up on 20 well 20 out in the courtyard and 11 years at jay partridge tomorrow so congratulations to both of our superintendent award winners and our students have arrived and they are our guest of honor this evening so i'd like to introduce diane olson to introduce our student program good evening board i'm very excited to present to you one of the outcomes of our adult students most of these students have been through all of our programs in chico unified and they learn to work within the community and one of their roles is a recycling program that they do and so the teacher for this program is ruth testar and then her assistant who likes to fly under the radar so he might hide behind the tv there is dana matlin over there and i'm going to let ruth introduce the students thanks diane yeah i just want to give a big thank you and a shout out to all my fabulous female leaders who helped support us continuing this program with all of the struggles we had over the last couple years and moving campuses so they've been a big help with helping us keeping this going um i had i asked the students the other day i was like i think we're going to go to the meeting and talk about the recycling program does anyone want to go and all three of their hands boom we're ready and this is very typical of these three we have addison geraldine who is 21 and we'll be exiting next fall miracle trailer who is will be 21 in march and she attended butte college last year independently and we have allison fcf who is exiting the program this june and we're excited to talk about her future yeah they've been practicing all day and you got you all have some questions so they are ready to answer i think we're very happy that you guys are here and so what would you like to tell us about your recycling program can you guys hear me yeah we hear you well thank you we grew up from business and homes all over town we grade and thanks for our customers and soap buy bottles grass cans at pv um and we we um take it to oroville to um to cash in and that's what we started with all right very good [Applause] yes if you don't mind so what kind of things do you spend the money on we spend all my food trips like art supplies like like you can name pretty much anything like cooking coffee cars like pretty much like fun stuff for like like math skills and stuff i have other questions you mentioned field trips what kind of field trips do you go on we we go to animal sanctuaries ice skating and a lot of other stuff great thank you who's the better ice skater [Laughter] there's a couple other things we spend the money on yeah and we also spend money on for like other food trips like go on like lunches and like to the bowling alley can you guys hear me okay um we also spend our money on the mall and the movies and then we also go to the museum i've got a couple of questions one is what kind of businesses do you collect from recycling and then how much money do you guys make when you when you take all that stuff in in oroville so we go to like little way hand um go to like homes like different type of homes like and we'll also go to like um non-stop mills like over by downtown yeah we go to like um boto bordeaux on skyway or acosta refunds clubs and we go to almond tree that's some of the places we go to how about the money how much money do you guys make in oroville okay oh it depends uh over oh under to 300 dollars one last question how many times per month do you do you do this one to two times a month okay so this program has been running for many years kovid shut it down for one year so they're a little bit behind on what they would normally have collected because they couldn't come out to the sites but they are also well known at the district office in all of our offices they come through they always shake our hands they always greet us with a good greeting and so it's a great opportunity for them to learn those skills within the program also so this is something that has been happening i i know since you've been here even before when jeff carr was here right so it's a long long-standing program that we have had did you have any more questions for dana or ruth i'd like to know how you think we could help you yes thank you so much so a big problem that we had in the past when we were at pv where people stealing our supplies stealing bottles and cans and our tarp that we use to keep the rain and the sun out a lot of the students in our program take medications and they're really sensitive to heat so having a shade structure over our sorting area would be really helpful and we have a couple of ideas how that could work we just need the okay to attach some items to buildings and fences out there right dana so we can get a tarp so we're protected for the weather and then also having a container to keep the bottles and cans in as a safe space before we take them into oroville because right now we're just kind of having to sort through go go and drive to oroville and we're doing that two or three times a month which is not the best way to do it but we need a place to store the cans and bottles do you want to say anything else sure why not one of the things i was going to say is that we this this group takes in quite a bit of recycling we have if you want to pass out the calendars you can see the amount of customers we take care of each month um it's quite a few and they love to donate they tell their friends about us and so we do we you know we're out in the community they're very sociable it really works out well we collect a lot it would be nice to have some containment units if we can the lock boxes that we have at pv have been broken into numerous times we've had to constantly repair them with recycling money and still they're broken into so this has been kind of an issue we've actually had to store a lot of our recycling off-site so that no one can get to it the room we do have there is limited if we could get something that'd be great the shade structure that's the first priority numerous classes use the sorting area we have at least three different classes that will come in any time during the day five days a week to use this area during the heat sometimes during the rain it would be wonderful if we could have some sort of shade structure that could you know at least protect them from the from the inclement weather anyways thank you so much and i think we can help with some of that we can i think our m o director just left unfortunately but we can have some conversations with him about this but i did want to address the students i want to thank you so much for presenting this evening it is hard to talk to an audience especially when you're using a microphone and answer questions and you guys were so well prepared so articulate and i'm really proud of you for doing this thank you so much [Applause] thank you guys really that was great and with that i will turn it back over to you dr kaiser okay so next we have announcements is anyone have an announcement no okay okay then we move to items from the floor just as a reminder items from the floor are not on the current agenda and so they can't be responded to by board members they are taken note of and some activity or action may result based on that so i have one name that was submitted for items from the floor and that's robert keane i don't know if it's i don't believe i see him here what'd you say he's not here he's not here oh okay and he didn't call in okay okay so i guess we're done with that does anyone else in the audience have an item from the floor again not on the agenda okay come on up and give your oh okay have to be not on the agenda okay all right thank you so with that we'll move to the consent calendar is there anyone on the board that wants to pull an item on the consent calendar yes eileen yes madam president thank you i'd like to poll 8.1.1 81.1 okay anybody else i'm going to pull a 2 4.

just some other reference notes we're talking about roughly 196 absences here the majority of those are related to a positive test but we do have other qualifying reasons which we're being a close contact b is being symptomatic and remaining out of work to protect others and caring for a quarantined child who may have been in close contact or may have been positive himself i think those are all the numbers and yep that's it thank you mr taylor any questions where's the uh where's the money coming from for this um we will actually just pay this back out of the salary account that was originally budgeted in these were wages we expected to pay these employees it was only because of the absence that we didn't pay it so we're not grabbing it from somewhere else correct and again one semester yep only doing the first semester right now we'll continue to monitor but this does not move past december 31st i just think it's good jason yeah you got you're providing this opportunity for the teachers they they need all the help they can get right now so i think it's great it's a very kind thing for the board to do and this applies to all staff yes teachers okay we'll need a notion of no other questions mr president i move that we approve the code related abstinence forgiveness for the employees that have presented second motion has been made and seconded all in favor say aye aye anyone opposed action 6.2 except biz for phase 2 pleasant grove innovation project thank you mr hubbard this morning i'm recommending that before it approved and accept the bids for the phase two of pleasant river elementary renovation and dr long will provide you with some additional details thank you i really appreciate the board having a meeting this morning it helps us with the getting this project done and if this feels like groundhog's day with the renovation of pleasant grove it's because this is the third time we've been in front of the board asking you to approve bids to finish the renovation or not to finish but to renovate pleasant grove this time this phase finishes the renovation at pleasant grove so we're really excited about that so on january 10th we opened bids for phase two of the renovation at pleasant grove after that meeting of aecom hunt um and mr gulley is here today from aecom hunt he had to get up even extra early to be here so we really appreciate that they come hunt and cso d scoped the the bids with the low bidders and based on their meetings with them and the bids that came in we recommend approval of the bids um the amounts do include all the alternates so we're really lucky it still came in just a hair under our what we had budgeted for construction and so we were able to accept all the alternates so we recommend approving alternate one removal of the stage in the cafeteria expansion alternate two kitchen upgrades alternate five doors and door hardware upgrades and alternate six a boiler replacement bid packet one for general trades was in the amount of one million four hundred and thirty seven thousand dollars a bid pack two mechanical plumbing and fire suppression for eight hundred and twenty thousand six hundred dollars electrical and technology for three hundred five thousand nine hundred dollars bid pack four general lighting 106 thousand six hundred nineteen dollars bid packet five classroom tunable lighting 149 919 and kitchen equipment 327 350 dollars it totals 3 million 147 388 our intent is to get started immediately and we should be done by the end of july before school starts you can still ask him though any questions for dr lynn refresh my memory we've done the gym there already or um yes we did we did that in the first phase a couple years ago this is really just classroom finishes we did this last phase we added four classrooms and created an extra set of gang bathrooms this phase completes a renovation in the rest of the classrooms and in the corridors okay yeah that cafeteria needs expanding yes there's no other questions we'll need a motion i move that we accept the biz for phase two of the pleasant grove elementary innovation project second motion's been made a second all in favor say aye aye anyone opposed motion passes thank you thank you okay yeah item 6.3 approval of architectural services agreement thank you mr harper this morning i'm recommending that board approve agreements for architectural services for middle for the middle school projects then dr law will provide you with some additional information thank you this morning we're asking you to approve the agreement with cso architects for architectural services for the renovation of both middle schools they'll be working with the middle school staffs and their administrative team on areas to improve the buildings the phase one at middle school north if you'll recall we're going to expand the cafeteria and the kitchen area as well as add a music area and do some renovation in those in those music classrooms to make those a little bit larger to adapt for the growth in the program there at middle school central we're going to add classrooms there and and expand the cafeteria into the lgi area and create a new lgi cso is currently the architect for pleasant grove they did the the work for us at uh middles are at north grove and center grove elementary and the secure vestibule project as well that we did through out the whole corporation so we're recommending approving their agreement any questions for dr law if not we'll need a motion mr president i move that we approve the agreements with cso architects for architectural services and authorize the superintendent for designing me to sign the agreement on behalf of the school corporation second the motion has been made as seconded all in favor say aye aye anyone opposed motion passes thank you 6.4 approval construction services agreement thank you thank you mr everett let's see um this morning i'm recommending the board approve construction service agreements for both middle schools pleasant grove and sugar grove renovation projects and dr long will provide you with the information thank you i should have mentioned that our attorney has reviewed both hunts contract and the cso's contract and has given us the green light so i didn't want to forget to tell you that this is an agreement we're recommending you approve with a hunt construction group to serve as our construction manager for both middle schools pleasant grove and sugar grove renovation projects as you well know we've worked with hunt construction for the past several years including our safety and security project the student activity center the natatorium and walnut grove elementary we're recommending the board allow us to enter into into an agreement with hunt construction for these projects to serve as our construction manager any questions for dr long this is just standard operating procedures right all these yes yeah we once we have these contracts approved we upload them into the state website dr gabriel does and so these are just really an extension of what we've been doing with them if there's no other questions we'll need a motion mr president i move that we approve the agreement with country construction groups for construction services and authorize the superintendent or designee to sign the agreement on behalf of school corporations second motion has been made and seconded all in favor say aye aye anyone opposed motion passes thank you thank you that's it next on the agenda is the just announcements
