That's a That's an opportunity I haven't really looked at. >> It's pretty funny. Uh so yeah, this was a Larry Larry Pinto really pushed on this. It's customize and distribute digital IDs that cannot be lost or stolen or replicated. And how I understand it, it's an invaluable product and uh I know Mr. Rinfist is a big fan of it. Uh folks in the high school are a big fan of it. And uh I have to give Larry Pinto kudos because he he was pushing on it for a couple of years. >> So good for Larry for that and Mr. Pinto in regard to that. And in uh page 14, these are all brand new. Um they were not uh part of our reorganization in 2025. Again, we have our main uh pl DMN plumbing uh for our plumbing and heating services. They'll book them for timely and materials.
Uh over 14,000 students attended international conference last year including from China, Korea, Canada, all I mean in all 50 states. And uh we're going to have four middle school kids uh traveling with us and those are the first middle school kids to from Arizona to go and compete at international since 2019. >> [applause] >> I I think tonight it is CTE programs at Williams Field and we're recognizing the outstanding work that they've done and so I'd like to invite uh right now our SkillsUSA competitors, all of you who are in as you can see the red jackets with your medals, if you could all come up here, please, as long with our coaches, Herb Williams, Bill McDonald, and Devin Adams. >> This is like the best I can do cuz I got to be able to see that it's still there and hasn't timed out. >> Actually, I can do that. Um my comment was that there were a number of places in the memo where you talked about the fact that these um these facilities expenses were unexpected and yet we can in in a sense expect them because we have this aging infrastructure >> and I'm wondering whether there is a recommend like how we we might address that in a future budget. Uh we don't know exact like I I feel like for this inspection that ended up turning up the asbestous. I'm a little I'm a little confused about why we didn't know that that expense was coming because it sounds like every 5 years we have to have the sprinkler system inspected. Um, but I guess I'm just wondering like is there a recommendation that around how we should think differently about the budget going forward in light of the fact that the building is aging and these things do come up.
So that's why it's such an important harm reduction tool as well as um a tool for people that uh need it for chronic pain and I disagree that there are alternatives. There are very few alternatives for severe chronic pain out there that are um safe and effective. Thank you very much. I appreciate your time. >> Great. Thank you. All right. So we're going to move on with our agenda. Um the next thing on the agenda is the presentation by the Ashland High School Youth Prevention Council. Um and the youth tobacco survey results testing. >> Um hello youth health board. Hello the board of health of Ashland. My name is Magna Sherager and I am a sophomore at Ashlin High School. >> Hi everyone, I'm Biba Venet Ramen and I'm also a sophomore at Ashlin High School. We're here to present the nicotine-free generation report. This was a survey presented at Ashlin High School stu um and done by the student population by decisions at every turn during lunch and it regarded the use of nicotine and their experience with it.
Cut the lead back down eight to eight to three. 645. That was good job by Zung to win that draw. Go down score a goal. Zoronic. Sorry about that. Zoronic missed the IC. Balls up and The Tigers come up with it once again. >> Believe that's the other camp that comes up with it. Gets the ball over the restraining line. Goes in and out of the Spartans. Gets the ball over and turn almost gets that bounce step in front. Good job by Hannah Eddie to back that. No, maybe it wasn't Hannah Eddie. Good job by Morton to back that up. Comes up with it. Morton with the ball. tries to get the ball over to Pelagrino and balls displaced. Tigers come up with it. Zeronic feathers one in to Molina. Camp with the ball. Gets the ball over to Stevens. Back to Zeronic. Zoronic with the ball.
uh our electrical contractor J&J over had for several years or excellent business partner for the district. Same could be said for Rousen and Daru also doing significant amount of work both between DMN J&J Rousen and Drew very responsive our local folks uh couldn't ask for more from them. It's all about being responsive being fair and equitable and they really do it all. >> And Lou DMN I got them from you. We use him at housing. He's a close part graduate. >> He's one of the only I think he's the only state champion wrestler. >> His son is graduating St. Peters Prep as a wrestler. >> Big time. >> He's very very punctual. We have him at the housing. >> Very good with paperwork too. Man after my own heart. >> He's he's a solid guy. >> He's he's he's a solid guy. >> He knows prevailing wage rates, all that stuff.
What I'm going to do because we didn't have their names on the stage and so if you'll just bear with me. So kids, here's what you're going to do. We're going to pass the mic. You're going to introduce yourselves and you're going to tell everyone what metal you got and then what First of all, what year you are. What metal you got and what you competed in. I'm Tyler Coronado. I'm in the second year of criminal justice and we won gold with quiz bowl. >> [snorts] >> I'm Ari Marchand. I'm second I'm first year criminal justice and I got gold medal in pin design. I'm Alex Walther. I'm in second year criminal justice and I got a gold medal in CSI. I'm Ryan Gabriel. This is my first year in criminal justice and I won first in digital photography. I'm Noah Montel. I'm a senior and I won gold in CSI.
>> Yes. >> Can I >> You go first, Shannon. >> Yeah. So, Shannon and I talked about this. I also talked about it with John Tricky and it turns out and I I think it's just we've had so much turnover and administration at the school in the last five years that there w what Shannon has done now is started planning capital planning list of things that will need to be done in the future. They could not find anything like that for the past. >> Okay. >> so we didn't know this five-year inspection thing was coming up. >> Well, we maybe did, but it wasn't written anywhere as we need to budget for this. At least that's my understanding is >> right people. >> So, I wanted to say something, Jenny. It makes sense, but that certain things should happen in a certain way. Um I think that a couple things need to take into consideration here.
It was aimed at finding out why students chose to stay nicotine-free, why they may choose to take nicotine, if they would accept nicotine when offered, and their ideas on ways to address nicotine usage. The surveys questions were formulated by the students on the youth prevention council alongside the assistance of their adviserss. Um, so one of our key findings from this survey is the fact that 122 students or 71% choose to stay nicotine-free because of health risks associated with the use of nicotine. 101 of our students or 58.72% believe that the reason nicotine is common among youths like themselves is due to peer pressure. However, the runner up reason is that 22.09% thought that it was stress or anxiety. Our survey discovered that 142 students or 82.56% would decline the chance to use nicotine if it was offered to them. And lastly, our students thought that the most effective solution to youth's nicotine usage was more awareness, garnering 47.06% of students.
Zoronic sees a seam. Kylie Marino steps up. Zeronic pulls back. Zeronic tries to feather the ball into the middle. Morton there with the ball. Ball still loose. Two freshman with Rizzo and Morton get the ball up to the other freshman Pelgro gets the ball up to Mckne. Keney with the ball. She gets it into Pelier. Pelier ball gets displaced. Crims and Parsons in on it. And Parsons looks to get another bad check. Child have with the ball. Sand comes up with it. Sand throws the ball. Mcknney's there to pick it up. Keney still with the ball. Gets the ball over the restraining line. Goes through one. Ball gets taken away. Sand there to pick it up. Like to see the Spartans really slow it down because this last five minutes has just been really, really sloppy. It's not really what you want to be doing going into the last couple games of the season heading into Western Mass playoffs in the States.
>> Yeah. And and Joe, I gotta thank you for the one for Liberty Heating and Air Conditioning. >> Mike's guy is the best. >> Michael Bear. Mike Bear. Oh, that's your guy. Uh, excellent. Another guy. Very responsive, very fair. Um, >> assist is good. >> So, I can't uh can't thank you guys enough for that. Obviously, HVAC is extremely important, especially in the high school. Um as we put together this year the uh purchasing manual that includes policy ethics uh bid state contract cooperative purchasing methods of procurement among other items. Uh I've tweaked the data in regard to any new thresholds in regard to uh new uh bid thresholds or quote thresholds. All that's been updated. Uh, I always have the auditor give it a second look since they're smarter than me in regard to all the laws and all the bid thresholds. So, Kevin from Wilcox was kind enough to take another look.

Outside of leadership turnover, we also have where the team looked for adequate documentation and that documentation was not in place. So we have to actually determine what it is that like how do we adequately put documentation in places that the next team and next leaders can find it. We have a the practice that Shannon talked about where they would have accepted the letter um that changed this year where they were like we're no longer accepting this letter, right? Um because this this is this is what has moved forward. And then also the thought process of we're in a good place because there were this has been done previously. We've never had anything come forward previously and now here is the Oh, I'm sorry. The the sun is setting over here in in this part. Um, and now this comes up. I I do feel like there's a couple things to consider.
However, a close runner up with 31.76% of students was the call for harder access to nicotine. So, the grade level breakdown. Some patterns we noticed across the data for question one. Why do students stay nicotine free? A majority of all grades selected because of health risks associated with nicotine use, but 19% of seniors selected because their friends do not use. For question two, why is nicotine common among youths? Again, the majority of all grades selected nicotine is common because of peer pressure, but freshman and seniors were an exception with 10% and 14.3% of them selecting due to social media or ads. As for question three, would you take nicotine if offered? A high majority of all grades responded no. They would not try it with seniors being the lowest percentage at 71.9%. And once again, the seniors had the highest percentage of the yes, I would try it response as well as the already tried it response, which with 9.5 and 14.3% respectively.
Like to see him clean it up a little bit. as they are. They're slowing it down. Gets the ball over to Marino. Marino over to Mckne. Keing throws one into Peller. Jane Pelier turns around and takes a shot. And another good save by Haber. Habber doing a really good job this quarter keeping uh South Hadley in it. Good defense by Hannah Eddie. Hannah Eddie runs it in. Hannah Eddie still with the ball. Gets the ball behind the net to Lucy Parsons. Lucy Parsons gets a stick to the face and she'll be getting herself an 8 meter attempt. Lucy Parson's 8 meter attempt. Parsons goes in, turns around, misses wide. Jane Pelier there. Spartans up 83 with 236 to go. Gets ball Parsons. Parsons still with the ball. Parsons hits Kylie Marino who fires it into the back of the net and put the Spartans up nine to three with 222 left in the first period.
About 98% of it was pretty much the same as what you guys viewed uh earlier this coming year. And then based on the very uh challenging winter we had uh this past winter, uh we thought it best to maybe do a point Riggy uh if we do get another one and two feet snowstorms like we did this year. He was invaluable to getting us up and running because without him with two feet of snow on the ground, uh it just would not have happened. We just don't have the people power or the equipment to move what he moved in a very short period of time. And the guys just raved about him in regard to being responsive, being part of the solution, educating them, uh hearing them out, getting reciprocated feedback. Um they just said, "Gosh, you know, if anything happens like this again next year, can we get ready?" I said, "Well, we'll see what we can do." But they were uh big fans of his.
Um, my name is Aurora. I'm a junior. This is my first year in criminal justice and I also won the criminal justice Quizbowl. Um, I'm Arisela Bustillo. I'm a freshman and I also won gold in Quizbowl. My name is Jayden Wallace and I'm a junior and I won gold in criminal justice Quizbowl. All right, give them a round of applause, all of our gold medal winners. >> [cheering] >> If I could have our instructor, Herb Williams, he's just going to say a few words. Somehow I got to outdo Brock. I don't know how I can, but we um we had 33 people compete, 29 people won medals. These are all the gold medal winners. We also want to thank Craig Pearson, our CTE director, gives us a lot, so does the board and our principal Mr. Dolan as well. Without all the support we get from the the families, the parents and especially the students, we could never be this successful and this is not an uncommon year for us.
The building is aging. We do have a capital plan, but there are unknowns that come up a lot quicker than what it is that we plan for, and that's the hardest part. and deferred maintenance which Jenny you should know is a real thing in education where when we are planning and looking for our budgets a lot of things that that are hitting our operating we may have put things in our capital did not plan for it because we've kind of staggered it out and yes I would say we need to plan and look at the budget differently because we are still trying to appropriate funding but our push for funding would be personnel versus looking at putting adequate amounts in facilities under expenses So, we kind of look more at funding our payroll lines and making sure we have the staffing, but we're not always looking at the expense lines, and that's where we're hitting right now with this.
Lastly, for question four, the most effective way to address nicotine use, the uh the highest percentage in all grades was between the low 40s and high 50s. Thought that raising awareness would prevent it. Interestingly, the freshmen were the grade with the highest percentage supporting harder access to nicotine with 38.6% and 33% of seniors called for harder access to nicotine. Please keep in mind this is just a brief overview of the data we collected. Um so with the data we collected we did have some limitations and in our survey students were given the choice of four answer options but a lot of students selected more than one option. Um for example the question why do students stay nicotine free a lot of students selected more than one option such as a peer pressure and b stress or anxiety. Um when this happened, we selected the first option that they chose.
>> Kylie Marino's second goal of the game, 14th goal of the season. >> [snorts] >> Mac, we were up on a draw. Mac with the self draw. Picks it up. She'll get the ball over the restraining line. Gets the ball over to Marino. Marino over to Crims. Crims to Parsons. Parson goes around. Goes through one. Harson's just the goalie. Throws the ball over the net. Crimson there to back it up. Crimson to Pel Pelier. Pelier back to Parsons. Parsons to Marino. Marino goes in and out. Nice job by Marino. Just the goalie left. gets a shot off. Kylie Marino will be getting herself an 8 meter attempt. Kylie Marino 8 meter attempt. Marino runs it in off the goalie stick. Ball bounces way up high and away. Mary Devoy knocks it out of South Highley stick. Ball still loose. still on the ground. South Haly comes up with it.
