And that's an annual expense that doesn't go away. Correct. >> Correct. That's been since 2015. >> So, we've been paying for those trailers since 2015. And obviously, like any building that's built, they just age. >> Yeah. But the any maintenance is on the trailer. We don't pay we don't pay roof leaks or anything like that, >> but they're aging buildings. And then if we look at page 11, so we're at 135 there. If we look at page 11, we're talking about over a year's time. So $300,000 for the temporary classrooms at three. So now we're up to 435 in temporary space that are aging and they'll never be permanent structures. And then if we look at page 12, uh, at the top of the page, third one down, we're paying another 10,500 annually for the modular trailers at school three. >> That That's the That's the annex.
My name is Monica Harvey. I'm at Santan Elementary. I'm a first grade DLI Spanish teacher, and this is my third year in Higley. Devon Ellsworth, kindergarten at Bridges and my 10th year in Higley. Paul Soriano, the PE teacher at Higley Traditional Academy and I've been in this district for 3 years. My name is Jen Harris and I am a fifth grade teacher at Power Ranch Elementary and finishing up my ninth year in Higley District. Angela Trujillo, I'm an HR specialist and I've been with the district almost 2 years. Adriana Cote, teacher at Cooley and this is my second year at Cooley. Jessica Campuzano at Cooley Early Childhood Development Center, uh teacher 13 years. I'm Andrew Batios, I'm a teacher at Higley High School and I've been with the district for 12 years. Let's give them a round of applause and a thank you to our Higley Leadership Academy and everything that they've done.
And then we're going to do a big overhaul on, okay, there's open purchase orders, what can we cancel, what's still going to be paid, and we'll have an idea of like all of the amounts in the encumbered columns. Are we actually paying those or are we not paying those? Um, so I will make sure that we are in the green. If there is additional money in order to make us be in the green needed, then I would have to come back to you all for that. But my goal is to ensure that we balance um and and we'll see be able to make that determination in June. My input then is that we wait for that information and push not both votes but the vote about the asbestos off until we have a fuller understanding where >> just to add to that I I could get um or have Mike get the actual quote so we have >> Can we see how long the quote is good for?
>> Okay. Um maybe you want to take this one too. Um were there any you did mention grades but just briefly were there any trends? >> So there were a couple so some seniors and unfortunately some of our freshman in 9th grade itself in my grade there has been a trend and um due to usually siblings and their environment itself where they can get access to it. So they have like older siblings where like they're 18 plus and they can get nicotine and so they have access to it or if they seen someone they've grew up watching they've used nicotine and they've they know them well personally. So like oh this person has been that I know has been using it so it should be fine if I use it. So that influence with elders and um people that you admire. Did that come out in the survey or was that like through conversations?
Gets the ball back to Zurich. Zurich finds an open cutter. One-on-one. Don't know who that was. Could have been 10. Mont Maggie with the goal. Thank you very much, sir. I can't read my own writing. They didn't they didn't have anything on Ars. Yeah, normally I go off of if they have it on uh Mass Live or Arbiter, but they didn't they didn't have anything. Or they did, but they didn't have the the numbers. Ball goes up and Zurich comes away with it once again. >> Zurich slows it down and set up the Tigers offense camp to Molina. Looks like Molina calls out something and Spartans are going to have to start watching each one of these cutters. Good job by the Spartans to pick up each one of these cutters and nothing ends up working out for the Tigers on that one. Tigers sending in five different cutters and each Spartans covering them all up.
>> That's the annex. >> That's where the child study team. >> We're paying a significant amount of money to rent buildings that are basically just aging. Regardless of who does the maintenance on the building, they're aging structures. So, all I would like to do is ask the board if we could possibly think about replacing these temporary buildings that aren't getting any newer. And we are paying them a debt that never ends, right? They're being leased. So, we lease them every year. They're never going to be paid off. So, we're going to be paying 400 almost $500,000 a year for these temporary buildings forever. So, I would just ask the board if we could consider possibly looking into replacing them. Now, I know, and I'm sure there's people on this board that know construction better than I. We know stick bills are very expensive, right? But I know districts have used modular buildings to solve some of their problems.
Okay. You guys are going to have to scoot up a little bit so some of us can slide in the back, okay? Make sure we can see you. All right, now we're going to get to a point where we're going to talk about our points of pride and get to recognize different people here from the district office, from transportation and from maintenance that were our points of pride. And and so as they pump up, first I'm going to have Josh. Josh, if you will come forward and uh talk about our transportation points of pride. >> [applause] >> Thank you. Tonight, we're recognizing two people with the transportation department. Mr. Joe Hasnik and Ms. Carolyn Gabler. Come on up, Joe. >> [applause] >> Carolyn, unfortunately, could make it tonight, but I'd still like to celebrate in her honor. So, Carolyn and Joe are routing coordinators for the transportation department.
>> Yep. >> Thank you. >> Okay. Share this. um uh in in the same line, right? So, uh with the abatement, you are I'm assuming that we're not going to want to do it while the kids are in school, right? We're going to wait till the end of June um for that. So, we have time to it's a higher enough dollar figure that we'll need a few quotes for that which won't happen yesterday. Um, so I guess uh or I I would be in favor of doing the abatement sooner rather than later. Um, but I I don't think this like by the time this abatement actually happens, we will have more information. We will be past that um May 15th date that Shannon was talking about, plus the time it's going to take to get the quotes to do it. So, I have no um I'm I'm comfort what was it?
How >> um some of our surveys like they get around it and some people even added their own box like people can get nicotine from around um their own like family members or other siblings. >> Yeah. Thanks. And and the last one and anybody can take this. Were there any results that you were surprised about? basically the fact that it was within our grade itself and um a lot of people which I think I find quite interesting is some people said within the seniors mostly that they wouldn't take any nicotine due to college so they see that that value um they see their like value more dignified and uh they would want to say stay away from it for like future careers thinking it would be impacted by that. >> Thank you.
This time they turn around and find the open shot. Get the ball. Avery Morgado picks it up quickly. Gets the ball back to Julia Gray and Spartans looking to start their offense deep into the territory. Gets the ball over to Mckne and Mckne will have some space. Gets the ball over to Parsons. Parson's playing give and go with Mckne and Mckne will get herself an eight meter attempt. Nice little give and go action. It's like as if they would know that from the soccer field. Sina Mckne 8 meter attempt. Mckne runs it in, turns around. Another good save by Habber. Habber comes out and stops Mckne. quickly gets the ball up to Camp and Camp will be off to the races. She's getting chased down by Pelgro. Can't catch her and Camp quickly gets the ball deep and to Mont Jim Pelgro loses it. South comes away with it.
And if we bought a modular building, a would be new, and b we would own it. so we would get out of this temporary building type situation and we're paying almost a half million dollars a year forever. So I would just ask that possibly we could look into and I know that you have some state contract vendors on our um on our agenda this evening. I believe there are even state contract vendors for modular buildings. >> I it's a great point. do understand that sometimes module may cost more depending on uh you know what it entails than than stick. But I think what the board needs to do here is possibly engaging land associates to do some sort of a PNA uh to give us an assessment. What it would cost estimate for a module building with the same type of uh infrastructure that we already have replaced that we've paid above and beyond what the leasing price is.
It's one of our most difficult departments within our department. They're responsible for routing all the students on the bus, which sounds easy, but they have to keep the buses on time. They have to make sure the special needs students have the right resources on the bus. And everything needs to be done quick. Everyone wants to be on the bus that day. So, they use a routing software to do that. And just kind of a fun fact that every student that boards onto the bus is actually a time delay for that bus stop. So, when we make bus stop changes or student adds or subtracts off of a bus, it actually affects all the other bus stops all the way through. So, they have to monitor that, and communication is a huge piece with that, having to communicate with our drivers, with our parents, and the schools.
I am comfortable moving the money to transfer to make sure that we have the ability to happen and it can happen quickly when it's when it's time to can I just clarify um please what you're saying Sarah my understanding also with the dollar number is we'll need three quotes before >> I think so roughly I don't remember we'll need two or three quotes likely Shannon is that correct >> um yes and no. So they raised the limit for school districts from 10,000 to 50,000 before it required three quotes. However, I like still like to do the three quotes because we want to make sure that we're getting the best value. So we will probably do three definitely two. >> Thank you. So Sarah, what you're saying is you would be in favor of doing both of these motions which is going to put the money for the asbestous abatement in available.
>> Anybody else have any questions? >> Thank you for coming. Appreciate it. >> Okay. Um so, um Jay, you're up next. Okay. Um, so we have theratum discussion and let me just start by saying I I talked to um a couple of times to our rep Jack Lewis about this and he, you know, kind of confirmed that this um house bill everything went down here. I had I had everything pulled up. Hang on one second. 4394 is still working its way through the mass legislature. Um he encouraged us to move ahead if we felt that regulation international was the right thing to do. Um he's fully supportive of that approach versus banning. Um he said to me that if uh things stall or die as they sometimes do in the mass legislature that he would then he would put in um submit or start the process for a new bill using probably much of the language that we drafted in ours.
South turns around, takes a shot. Julia Gray comes up with that one. >> Gray gets the ball back up to I think it was Pelier. Keeky comes up with it and Kekne off to the races. Gets the ball over the restraining line, turns around, feeds it into Illingsworth and Illingsworth gets herself a goal. Nice grab by Illingsworth to continue her uh scoring streak. She had back-to-back games with hat-ticks. Illingsworth gets herself up on the board. That's Illings 15th goal of the season. Seven goals in the last three games. Julia. Julia scored that. Zurich and Whiter on the draw once again. Balls knocked loose. Zurich. No. M. Whitward comes up with that one. Mack gets the ball over to Mckne. Mcknne going in. Gets met by two defenders. And Mckne looks like she'll be getting herself another eight meter attempt. Mcknne over two on eight meter attempts today.
So, we've got the the the the the infrastructure in the ground. Then Lou can take that and give it to the auditor and maybe the auditor could do a performer based on a half a million dollars. How many years it's going to take us to pay off uh you know that. So, that may be a good idea >> because we're paid a half a million dollars a year for buildings that aren't getting any newer and >> they'll never be paid off, right? This isn't this is a permanent rental >> of just the buildings. And to Joe's point, he made, you know, a big part of the expense is the infrastructure that we already have, the PSEG hookup, the water lines, and all of that kind of stuff. We already have that. And when you have to do a build from scratch, if we were building on a vacant piece of land, that's a significant amount of money to put in.
So, our routing department really is an important piece of our transportation department. Tonight, our routers are being recognized by two other district departments, the special needs department, sped, and McKinney-Vento, which is our homeless department. They're being recognized for their dedication to the students, going above and beyond in their role, being quick to respond to routing requests, and they have even found a way to transport students last minute when an outside vendor failed to show up. So, tonight, we recognize them in a very small way for their hard work and thoughtful work as well for many years. So, congratulations and thank you, Joe and Carolyn. >> [applause] >> Sounds good. So, from the teaching and learning side of things, I have our administrative assistant, Leah Cruz. Leah could come up. >> [applause] [cheering] >> So, Leah truly represents what a point of pride employee is and and how they operate.
>> Is that Yep. I'm confused though because it looks like we're moving 18,000 into facilities. >> The language isn't here yet. She said for the 20,000 it would be an additional 20,000 what's listed I think. So can well so we have two options. We can modify something here or we can do that at our June meeting which is like the 2nd of June. I I would like to do what Sarah Best suggested just so that it's there and if they can move it along so they can happen um during the summer that would be great and I'm afraid if we if we are delayed then it may get delayed and push it into the school year. Okay, Shannon. >> Oh, I was just going to say if it ends up being in the summer, that's no longer the FY26 budget, that becomes the FY27 budget.
So, um so anyway, I just say that to say that he's he's supportive of that approach. Um I think maybe I'll just remind people about how how did we get to this point. So, back in November, we got an email from um public safety saying that um the police had interacted with somebody that um was having problems and that uh the issue of crowding came up that he had been using it or one of the products. Um I don't know I forget which store it was but there were it was found out later that there were two stores that was selling liquid um crowdom product combination type of thing. Uh feel free I think was the product. So anyway, we I went over to mobile, looked at what they had. It was believe it was behind the shelf or or whatever, but um then Raj had said later that somebody from the health department went over and talked to maybe it was both of the stores.
Mckne goes in and another good save by Habbert to stop Mckne. Haber kicks the ball all the way out to Camp. Ball's still loose. She's met by Kylie Marino. Kylie Marino gives a little extra nudge. Camp comes out with it. Camp doing a good job keeping that stick by by her head. Good job cradling, getting the ball over the restraining line, setting up the Tigers offense. Vaughn with the ball. Kicks it off. Shot just high. South Hley gets the ball in. It's Stevens with the ball. Gets it over to Zurich. Zurich throws one in. Turns around. Another bounce pass. Bounce shot in front. Julia Gray there with it. Julia Gray running around waiting for the Spartans to get open. Balls comes loose. M. Whiter comes up with it. And Mack is about to run 60 yards and set up the Spartans offense. Good job by Zurich to stay with Mack.
