I'm not going to go and post it on social media without making the hard choice here. Um, and then I'll end off with the fact that like Commissioner Paris said, when we took that oath to the New to the New Jersey Constitution, it says that we must provide a thorough and efficient education. Um, and that's supporting our students, our staff. Um, so I'm making a a good conscious decision, not just in talk, but making this hard choice uh to vote yes to the 6%. Thank you. >> Thank you, Commissioner U Ragel. Commissioner Ciano, >> so voting no on 6% says I can't go to a musical anymore because I didn't vote to support it. That makes absolutely no sense. When you go looking at what I'm looking at, what I'm seeing every day, that's why I'm voting where I am. Me going up 4% is way more than I've ever gone up before because of the position we're in.
Someone can find this data themselves on the uh Indiana uh website under assessment um information portal. They have that information for every corporation. Um and then staff training is a big focus in this section. what are our needs in staff training, how can we support staff, and then making sure that we have programming available.
I attended Steema Palooa. April 19th, Laera High School's varsity basketball banquet at Mama Kosas. Congratulations on an amazing year. Uh, April 21st, uh, I was another guest speaker. Everyone keeps asking me to be a guest speaker. I'm okay, why not? Uh, at Magnolia High School's ILC. Um, and then after that, on the way out, I stopped by uh the mock interviews, which was hosted at the gym. Um, that evening, I attended the pinning and installation ceremony for new student ambassadors at CVA. April 22, I went to La's open house. April 23, Southern California's design build competition industry lunch at Golden West College. Great job to Anaheim High School and Savannah teams. Wow, the amazing things that they built. I wanted to buy it. I was like, can I buy that? It was amazing. Great job. April 24th, St. Anthony Clarettes for the district-wide parent volunteer celebration.
Um getting ready for my senior year and AP tests. I got A push tomorrow and then AP Lang and Composition next week. So, all while fighting some kind of crud, but I think I got over it. Um So, yeah, that's the life of a student who's always stuck to his phone and not listening to his irresponsible parent, unable to get up as some might say and believe. Anyways, I want to try and keep tonight pretty quick and to the point. Again, thank you for your time and allowing me to speak each month. I've been here at each meeting the entire school year. That's 10 months. I've done my research and I brought it to you. I've spoken to students, parents, teachers, and staff across the district. Hell, my content has even become a pretty big social media debate with, you know, posts from The Voice of Apple Valley.
And if you're saying, "Well, don't go to shows." That's absolutely ridiculous. >> Commission. Thank you, Commissioner Santo. Commissioner Suarez. >> Thank you, President Fasford. Um, no further comment. I'm just really appreciating the conversation um here and it it does seem like everyone is just um really considering all the nuances that is in the decision. So, thank you. >> Thank you, Commissioner Harris. Vice President Santio. >> Well, since we're getting into it, um yeah, it's not an easy decision, right? We're a representative government. We're put here to represent the people, the public, and we're here to look at the facts always with the students interests in mind and make the decisions that we think are the best decision. I asked earlier about the staff cuts, but I know that um not just the staff, it's additional resources, it's extracurriculars, it's everything else, not just the staff that are going to be cut.
So, any questions in operational effectiveness or anything you'd like for us to clarify? >> I think the I I don't think we brag enough on ourselves. So, I I totally agree that we need to get that out more. And then who was the young man that jumped in right there at the last? >> That was my bad. Sorry. I might need one of Amy's signs with the arrows. >> All right, to share. >> And then um our next section, the fourth, uh action area is positive school culture and climate. And we have Tevin Schultz and Morgan Lyens here to talk to us about that. >> Yes. So, thank you so much. Yep. We're going backwards a little bit in our presentation. Um there we go. All right. So, we're here to update you again on the reasons and some of the possible work that u we intend to bring about with this priority.
Great job parents. I do have a few things to say, but I'll wait till the end of my report. April 25, supervisor Doug Chaffi's children and family health fair at Magnolia High School. April 28, I attended Oxford Academyy's um oh, I visited did another school visit. I do school visits. I'm trying to get to every single high school before the end of the year. It's so hard. There's so much going on. Uh so thank you Principal Houston for showing me around Oxford and learning about the history of that uh location. I am more understanding of the history of Oxford and um so I I get the vision. Um April 29th uh state of the city address at the Grove in Anaheim. Uh May 1st I attended Catella High School versus Calvary Chapel's varsity basketball baseball game where they won 70-0 at Boen Park. Uh and last but not least, I did uh attend last weekend the CCEA awards gala and I just want to share that another amazing all schools are doing great but I Gilbert it was just great to be at that uh conference.
For the most part, my argument about following the law For the most part, my argument sorry, is about following the law and implementing SB 328 has been supported more than it has not. As my mom would have continued last month before you guys cut her mic, I do have a considerable amount of support. There are a multitude of teachers, staff, parents, and students across the district that support me. Not only this district, but others as well. Just because they choose to not come and sit through these long meetings doesn't mean that I don't have support. That being said, I've brought to you 10 months worth of plea, 10 months worth of research, 10 months worth of consistency in asking you, reminding you that you are here to serve the students of this district. As I approach my senior year and plan to have no first period for my own health benefits, I'm not yet sure what next year will bring, but I hope that my time with you this year continues to serve as a reminder and you eventually see that a later high school start time is better for is Uh sorry.
And I think Commissioner Ragsdale's point is really, well, where do you want to cut, right? Do you want to cut plays? Do you want to cut teams? Do you want to cut social workers? Do you want to cut teachers? Where where do you want to get this 4% right to fit? Um so, you know, tough choices. I think, you know, echoing everything said, we've been fiscally responsible. you know, we've um the per pupil costs were lower than many others and we've been fiscally responsible to be in a position to consider the six um where other districts have, you know, increased double digits and cut staff and are charging students for extracurriculars and on and on and on and still have double-digit increases. Um, you know, the thing about market, uh, you know, the market rate for your home, a big part of that is schools.
And you're going to hear tonight about a focus on safety, student preparation, behavior systems, and communication. So, I'd like to start with what I believe is probably at the forefront of everyone's mind when it comes to creating positive school culture, and that is school safety. um across every single stakeholder group in this county, whether it's parents, teachers, the neighborhood um watchdog with all the kids on the going to the um getting ready for school. Um it's a top priority and rightfully so. So so because our parents and our community want our children to um have a safe and secure learning environment um when they are here in our buildings. So in response to that, we intend to focus on both systematic and a structural um improvement across the across the district. When it comes to safety, this could include work um at um building level safety enhancements um to strengthen physical infrastructures.
Um also want to give a shout out to Mr. Nakayyama who got the esports program award and our own Gilbert for getting the model continuation school award. What was so significant about this event was that people from schools all across the country were going to uh to our teachers and um they were just congratulating them on their presentations. So, you know, it's just great to hear that um from other schools um that we are definitely a model continuation school. And the last thing I wanted to share is uh I've counted you know as a newest board member I've this is my sixth month right uh I've I've attended almost 100 different various events from sports to random visits in high schools to parent events to to theatrical productions to you name it to everything and before it's not for me I'm sharing that not to boast right in the end a trust's job is to be a present and what I'm sharing is that you know and as my first year the first thing you do is is you learn you'll learn and what I've learned is that a lot of amazing faculty staff administrators parents our directors our even our own board our cabinet everyone works so incrediblessly tirelessly that I can see it in your eyes not just the tiredness, but the passion and the things that you do in the work.
Is better for the health and welfare of the students today, the students of tomorrow, and the students for years to come. As we all look forward to a restful summer break, see you next Have a pleasant night. >> [applause] [cheering] >> Thank you. All right, we will now conduct a public hearing to receive comment on the California Schools Healthy Air, Plumbing, and Efficiency, or CalSHAPE, Ventilation Services Contract. I now open the public hearing at 8:52 to receive comment on the California Schools Healthy Air, Plumbing, and Efficiency, or CalSHAPE, Ventilation Services Contract. Mr. Shellenberg. Yeah, well, thank you, President Buchanan. Again, this is a public hearing just to gather input. You'll see later on the agenda there is a resolution for the board's consideration. Uh this CalSHAPE funding is uh, collected at the state from utility companies that is then allocated out to school districts for uh, plumbing and ventilation uh, projects.
Like, if you just look at any site right now on your own, all of them have the district and what they're rated, etc., etc. So, if you're a young family or if you're a family that is looking to grow, the school district is a major attraction and component to your market value of your home. Um, look, I think everybody's piecing G bill was ridiculous this last winter, right? But imagine, you know, 20 buildings, right? Um, there are different challenges and different complaints that we get all the time. I I know for years the high school, right, when my kids went, even before my kids, you know, I thought it was great that we got the AC going in high school, right? I mean, you know, it's unbearable in June. We're passing out water, etc., etc. and people were cheering that. Um, I've heard a lot about overcrowding for years.
Um it also is consistency with our procedures, the expectations that we have and our responses. Um we we do a lot with safety already. We meet monthly and um we want to continue to strengthen those partnerships that we have with those key agents for safety which would be um EMS and our police departments and um those those agencies as well. So just collaborating on some more proactive measures for safety. >> All right. And then the next part is talking about what our community needs as far as uh employability skills. that is a huge part of the new accountability model um and one piece that we keep hearing of you know specific needs from local businesses. So with the help of the economic development center um the survey that Dr. Johnson sent out early uh second semester the feedback we had um is is up here on the screen.
So, with that said, uh I hope you all have a I mean, I know so we still have a couple weeks left. I hope you all have an amazing summer. Um you know, um I'm going to continue to work and learn and I know we're not perfect, but collectively we can be when we work together. So, so yeah, I just wanted to share that. So, thank you everyone for so much for your hard work. I see you, right? I I see you. Thank you so much everybody. Thank you. Trusty Hosi, >> reset the timer. >> I don't want to talk about my 200 events. So, no. No. Um, I just want to let you know that, uh, really it is important for us as board members to make sure that our constituents and our community feel seen and heard. And um that's why we attend a lot of events and I think it's so important and this is where I get my street data >> by talking to people u at these events and so forth and um it's it's really kind of I've kind of broken mine kind of up um because I I only have five minutes now 4 minutes and 30 seconds.
And this would be phase two under the CalSHAPE ventilation services. Uh, as we are getting ready to wrap up phase one. And we already did our uh, plumbing CalSHAPE also.
We've got Maple Valley. Awesome. Everybody's cheering that. But we then have to maintain, right? So now there's heat for that. There's AC for that. There's teachers for that. There's everything for that. And there's a cost to it. Um, so um, the point is it's very difficult still for me. Um, everybody's uh, you know, your budget at home is going up, but the budget for an 11,000 school student district, those facilities and everything else to run that that to President I mean sorry to to Commissioner Paris's point earlier, that's that built-in 2%, right? And to Dr. Robbie To's point with the CPI, it's actually higher than that. So, we're behind just going by inflation. and inflation's hitting us, but inflation's hitting the district as well. And um it's just the choice that we are we are dealt. But in the end, the way I've always done it is if I put the students best interest in mind, um of course looking at all the factors, um you know, we're always going to do the right thing.
So the biggest areas that uh businesses wanted was workplace expectations, us to work with kiddos to establish, you know, we're building those employability skills throughout um their, you know, our daily lessons. And so the expectation portion, technical skills, hands-on opportunities, what we're expanding on at the high school, um the additional opportunities we have there, and then time management. Um I think the biggest thing is getting kids there or getting employees there on time. Um, so that's a big big component. Um, with that, what we're doing is obviously expanding on internships, work-based learning opportunities for our kids. Um, but before that, we're we're working in other employability skills into um lessons daily, whether it's STEM integration, um, any of opportunities that we got hands on related. Um, and then adding in a emphasis on executive functioning skills. That is one thing that the employers wanted. Organization, responsibility, problem solving, um all those different skills that we think we, you know, we cover, but and we do, but being more intentional with it, um would be obviously valuable for the workplace.
So um awards I went to uh a press conference acknowledgement for Sylvia Mendes >> with Miss Guerrero and Miss Rando Tjo and uh it was nice to see that tree from um you know from the city of Westminster. he he came across to their site and they kind of combined to acknowledge the work of Sylvia uh Mendes. Um student ambassador and installation dinner, the administration professionals lunchon, um our staff did a great job at acknowledging them. The parent volunteer lunchon, we had over 300 parents. Ericelli Chavez, hats off to you. Kudos to you. And Carlos, I'm going to tell you that was the most fun event. schools were dancing up and down the aisles and it was just a great event of acknowledging and we got to acknowledge some special people um for their work um in our in our district. So congratulations to you as well.
Are there any questions or comments from members of the board regarding the California Schools Healthy Air Plumbing and Efficiency Ventilation Services Contract? Are there any public comments regarding the California Schools Healthy Air Plumbing and Efficiency Ventilation Services Contract? I have received no cards. Okay. Hearing no further public comment, I now close the public hearing to receive comment on the California Schools Healthy Air Plumbing and Efficiency Ventilation Services Contract at 8:53 p.m. All right, discussion action session. One, adopt resolution number two 2526-16, final resolution terminating services of certificated positions as a result or reduction or discontinuance of particular kinds of services.
