If Rebecca can get on, Rebecca's a really good contact hitter. She puts her bat on the ball generally. Takes that one in for ball one. That's one of the things that I like really about Rebecca. She does tend to put her bat on the ball. Randall tosses and throws. That one's down in the dirt. Good leave by Rebecca, but if anybody can hit that one, it's her. That's her ball. It's It's right up her alley, I think. Another good leave by Kriegsman, who gets up in the count three and one now against >> [screaming] >> Randall. Uh a walk would be a great thing right now here, George. It would. That was a great job laying off that pitch. That's the pitch um you know, of shoulder height that usually kids, you know, especially at the high school level always jump on. And you can see she twitched a little bit and then she held off and she took the ball and now she gets a walk.
This year we've only had about four um that have asked uh to purchase theirs. You generally generally it's about 20. Um so I'm not sure if it's um you know they all have different plans uh if it's they don't like the model or or what. But so far or I expect we'll probably get to at least 10 would be my guess by the dead. >> For the ones that are not purchased, what you what's your plan with those? >> So, those we put into our rotation of spares and other projects, Matt. >> Yeah. >> The purchase price if they do decide to buy one at the end. >> $100. >> Can I trade you one from eight years ago? I'm just kidding. We have graduation coming up uh this Saturday. So, please let Mr. Baldwin know if you are attending. So, if I have a seat on stage again, if you're handing out a diploma, I imagine Bob would want to hand out his diploma or diploma for his son Camden.
>> Why don't we keep them and reissue them? >> We could do that too. Um, we've just >> bought them a year ago, right? Two years ago. >> In in the in the past, we've always given the employees the chance to buy them back at a discounted rate and then that goes back into capital outlay to help offset some of these costs. That's just what we've done in the past. >> How many are buying them? >> Uh, I don't have the answer to that yet. have the ones that are leaving. >> How many >> do we know how many teachers are have already said that are leaving the district that are buying their computers? >> I have not heard any >> I mean I haven't been contacted by a teacher that's leaving that said they didn't want to buy it. >> Right. So all the ones so far that we sent out have said that they haven't said that they don't want to buy this.
For now I I don't have a whole lot. Um, so, uh, last thing I'd like to close with is, um, just on a positive note, um, having gone through this year a lot of a lot of things with Yelp, including our Inerson audit through, um, Arizona Department of Education, um, what we already knew was confirmed in that um, we our teachers um could use some more support on um, learning the strategies to use in the classroom, you do with a kiddo who's just brand new to our country and doesn't speak any English and you know when they're at tech everyone's learning their ABCs but what happens when they're at the middle school and they have to sit in a math class or they're at the high school and they have to sit in an algebra 2 class and they don't know any English so the challenges are many right the challenges are many um so um to that end this summer we are going to be offering um an SEI class remember SEI is structured English immersion um to our teachers and so far we have 14 teachers signed up to take this class um and so I will be teaching it um at the end of June and um there they will be leaving there with a myriad of strategies and techniques for using in the classroom starting day one it's a you know hands-on kind of nuts and bolts kind of a thing let's see what can we do tomorrow that will help And like Nicole said, not just y'all students, right?
In these documents, you'll see some different examples that our staff may be utilizing. I'm not going to read through every single one, but you'll see on the left-hand side there instructional planning and support. That's really for our instructional staff working in the schools directly with students or anyone in the curriculum area. I'm in the middle is kind of administrative. This could be a variety of departments. Could be like a food services, could be HR, could even be our finance department and working at a variety of different angles there. And then on the far right side is student support. So, might be in our ESS department, maybe in our federal project as well. Some different things that they can use licensed AI tools that we approve to move forward with down the road, and I'll speak to that. So, some of those core principles again that you'll see throughout these documents that we're just highlighting is again AI is just a tool.
>> Uh, anybody any questions about the substitute teacher rate increase? >> Can I please have a motion to approve an increase to the substitute teacher rate by 3.5%. >> Motion second. >> Tiffany and Vivian, >> yes. Yes. >> Yes.
We also We also got a presentation on high school grading practices, which we're going to continue discussing um I think uh at the beginning of the school year and the work that is being done on that. Um and then we're also going to We also had a a uh some information presented to us on the accelerated placement program. And policy. >> And some of those are going to We're going to hear about tonight as well. >> Okay. Shall we move to the policy? >> Sure. >> Okay. >> So, for um policy and legislation, actually we talked about several things. Um we did go over um some updated um updated policies in uh press 121. So, we reviewed those. I think those are those are up for information today. Um we also talked about um Mr. Bellas working on the IGAs between different municipalities. As you know, we have um we have agreements between the school board and and Oswego police, Oswego fire, or etc.
Thank you. >> Thank you. All right. Item number seven is a consent agenda. Um, this includes a number of items that the board receives ahead of time that we spend time reviewing and asking uh the necessary questions. Um, this week we were reviewing meeting minutes, claims and payrolls, uh, the first quarter financial report, the transfer memo, a personnel report, disposal of equipment, our donation report, overnight field trip requests, ECA purchases, and account changes. So with all that board members, I will entertain a motion on the consent agenda. >> Can I make one comment before you do that? We did have a lastm minute addition um under item A or under under item I the disposals. There is a um document that was inserted that is disposal of some curricular materials at the preschool. And the reason they wanted to get that in is they want those materials that are no longer being used to be able to put out for kids to take home if they want.
It's it's a annual account of BCSE funds. Uh The other thing that I wonder about is um communication. Um I'm not sure at what point, but I'd like for the policy to clearly say when is communication of um an error discovered uh confirmed verified, at what point does it come from admin or the SBA to the Board of Directors? Now, this policy states in findings and corrective action on page two, if the audit report contains a significant deficiency. Now, this is an annual audit. So, if the audit report contains a significant deficiency, material weakness, or finding of non-compliance, the board shall conduct a review meeting with a public meeting. So, not sure that's what where I would go, but I think the board should be informed. Well, then this is what the policy states today. It says the administration shall prepare a written corrective action plan and implementation timeline within 60 days of receipt of the audit, and the audit committee shall monitor implementation of all corrective actions and report status to the board.
Aubrey was outstandingly ninth individual and then she was fourth in cattle as well. And then we went to Western Illinois which is a senior college university where we were fourth high team, fifth high in cattle, seventh high in swine and then second in reasons. Um Aubrey Aubrey was fourth individual in cattle and then she was also fifth individual in reasons. Um Clayton was third high in sheep and goats and second high in reasons and then I was um fourth high in swine. And then we went to Jolliet and we were third high team, fifth high in reasons, fourth high in sheep and goats and then eighth high in swine. Clayton finished sixth and then he was also fifth individual in swine and then Clayton was seventh individual in reasons and then four Aubrey was fourth individual in sheep and goats. So you hear there we're lists are getting longer as we come on.
Um They seemed to work with bigger schools. Uh and they're a bigger firm. And I I'm just I was just kind of concerned that we might be put on the back burner. So, that's Yeah. ESG is who I would be happy with. I fully agree with that. Also, I I like ESG. I like where their time frame is. The energy that they put into it. They do the projects. Um and helping us to uh determine what projects need to be done. Seeing them and building that long-term plan. Uh kind of get everything corrected if need be. Is that what the 15,000 I mean, they're going to give us a Yes. Yeah. They'll give you an actual uh basically it'll be a computer program. It'll actually have detailed uh you know, like what's major priority. It'll prioritize everything. Um it'll also give us budgeted amounts. You know, and it'll also look out a number of years for our air conditioning units and stuff like that.
And a lot of this is being led by some data and some research that's happening on a global and a national level. But essentially what the legislation says is this. It's called a belltobell um wireless device restriction. So for us at Huntington North High School, our school day begins at 7:40 and we dismiss at 255. This is a 740 to 255 piece of legislation. And the legislation allowed for one of two approaches for schools to address their wireless device policy in a restrictive manner. One is there was a no device policy where schools were told they have the option to not even allow them on their property. Can't bring them at all. Second option was a storage policy where devices are permitted at school but must be stored away and off. And so that was the first fork in the road. Um we've had some discussion.
So, kids that get things done in three, they're they're skipping a bit. Um, you can't, you know, some classes are harder than others. Um, and some they can go right through. Some classes kids are retaking. So, they've had the material before. We really have we we just can't compare it necessarily to sitting in a classroom for a whole semester because actually how much actual work is being done in there. You're listening to the teacher, you're doing activities, you're passing periods, you're doing all that stuff. You're in there for a semester. These kids are actually in front of the commuter computer um identifying with the work and engaging with the work. So, what we need to see, this is what the definition of meaningful academic activity is, demonstrating consistent progress. So, every day they're logging in doing something um engaging in original student work. there is going to be um some things that I'm going to have to look at in grade uh this year to keep them honest.
Uh the departments do, town government does, but citizens don't. So that is the actual ballot question to have early on. Citizens participate in budget before it gets voted on. And I think Ashlin could easily improve our process migrate to something like that as well. Um um it's we could bring it to the select board if and and I think they're pretty open-minded if they don't want to do it. Somebody could do a citizens petition, but it's it's so vital for the citizens to have a say in the budget when it starts. What happens with us is a bunch very small group of people um decide where everything's going to go and then by the time you get to town meeting and of course our we'll be talking about finance at the next the next podcast conversation um because without a film finance committee and we are like the only town that doesn't film because I can watch them in every town but this fun and I've asked for years and I don't know why they want to keep us in the dark.
We're asking that it's defined and a process and the and the process is followed. And quite honestly, I think everyone knows the error should always be on let's hear from the public. Oh, absolutely. That's such a great statement. And I remember talking to a previous moderator who always said to me uh that I wanted to err on the side of democracy. and I think we have a tendency in this town to air on the side of not democracy, efficiency, shut up. >> Um yeah, and people the excuse would be efficiency and I will not buy that. I'm sorry. That is >> efficiency, that is just you know, you can be somewhat efficient so it doesn't take two weeks, but um people people being told the comment is ending a town meeting when they're still sitting in their chairs. I mean, wouldn't wouldn't the um Well, in the legislature should get where the legislative body, we should get to get up and speak again.
Um, so I decided to go take a look at what other towns might have out there. And I found a really great one in the town of Winon. And I only know that because someone I went to college with >> was from that town. So I I know where it is. Um, but it's really cool. They've got I got the one from fiscal year 24. They've got uh all these objectives and then there's actually actions. I'm gonna show this to people who might be watching. Uh and it's like it's really impressive. It's they got all of them. Oh, this one's funny. Protect and enhance communication. I just happened to look at that one. um maintain an open and transparent atmosphere with all elected and appointed boards and assure the board of selections are formed of blah blah blah blah. Um and then there's another one about improving the flow to residents and then they have an action item.
Now I that maybe that's not practical in action. I'm just throwing out >> real examples that other communities have used to generate revenue. So, >> and we're always talking about generating our revenue instead of looking at I mean I believe we're um we get the budget and we just add on the new stuff which means all these stratified it's like stratified layers of things that you might not be doing anymore but they're still in there. Um can I also I think this goes under contradictory >> uh messages saying you know we're we're bound by two and a half and all these I think the latest message was like ke tech and insurance and one other thing you know eats up a huge portion of that but that I have not seen anything that counts for we also have increased assessment so our budget has been going up more than two and a half% and I I would just feel like having that real information would be super helpful.
Yeah, Kriegsman works a walk which brings up to the plate uh sophomore Ali Wilson. Ali Wilson making her varsity start here at shortstop in the nine hole hoping to turn this thing over to Nico. Showing bunt, lays down a nice bunt down the third baseline. And she's not able to beat it out, but she does get a sacrifice bunt there moving Rebecca into scoring position. Does her job. Great job by there there by Ali. That was a beautiful bunt. Um for you know, small field it's very very difficult to run out bunts in softball unless they're just amazingly placed. Um but at the end of the day the bunt you just trying to get the runner over and you know, she did her job. She does do her job and that brings up Nico Eustace who takes strike one. Uh again Nico always a threat at the plate.
Please let uh Lee know if there's any of those special scenarios pop up. and graduation is at 11 o'clock Saturday for Lington High School. Um, we have a bunch of service and retirement celebration awards coming up on May 20th. That'll start at 2 p.m. We have a 1220 12:30 dismissal. 12:20 at middle and high school, 12:30 elementary school uh for that half day on that last day and then at 2 o'clock end of the year retirement celebration for all our staff. lots of incredible years of experience, years of service, years of commitment to this uh to to this profession in this school district. So, you're invited to come if you'd like. You're more than welcome to join us on May 20th starting at 2 at Burlington High School. Uh Burlington High School received the All-Star High School award in 2026. Again, this award focuses on student preparation for post high school success.
>> Yeah. Right. Okay. >> Usually by now they would >> say that they didn't want Yeah. Okay. So that 5-year technology rotation we approved a few years ago, that's kind of just out the window now. >> Well, we can't. Yeah. I mean, we're talking about if we're trying to stay, you know, our goal was um when we came in by this year to have clear touch panels in all classrooms is what it was. And if we do that, I mean, we're talking double the price for those clear touch panels. So now we're looking at another $20,000. Rather than doing that this year, I would rather move it to Yeah. >> The Clear Touch family is going up percentage wise higher than anything else by far. >> So we still planning on doing three a year. That's what the rotation said. >> Oh, and we're doing three this year, right?
