It's just good teaching. So, what questions do you have for me? >> Great. Thank you. Keep up the good work. >> Thank you. >> All right. Item 6B is our superintendent report. Miss Daniels, >> good evening. Um, Dr. Moody sends his regrets. He's coaching his grandson's T-ball team tonight because the coach is out of town. So, this is the month that we celebrate everything under the sun. We kicked it off with our millionword challenge banquet last Monday night. Marcia was able to be there. I think you would agree it was a really fun event. Yes, we had about 300 people in the room celebrating kids and their reading accomplishments. So, there was a lot of hooping and hollering and excitement and the kids feel like they're so excited to run up and high-five the foundation board. Um, something super notable this year, um, Cheyenne leads the millionword challenge um, event for the district and she has coordinators at each school.
It's not a replacement of the work that we do. And obviously anything that you put into an AI tool, you want to always make sure that you are reviewing that and analyzing it for what it is spitting out to you and to others. One of the biggest pieces is obviously protecting student data. Obviously and others other staff data as well. So, you'll see we'll definitely be talking about that throughout this and throughout this whole process as we move forward. Obviously FERPA is in there and all our different guidelines that go in our parent student handbook. And we'll talk about some of those other factors as we kind of close this presentation later. Again, we are looking at staff staff and students only using our district licensed AI tools. We'll talk about a committee that we're moving forward with a little bit later, but we are looking at just having licensed tools in the hands of our staff and students.
>> Any questions on the extracurricular assignments? >> Uh, can I please have a motion to approve the extracurricular assignments for 2627? >> Motion. >> Second. >> Yes. Uh, the annual school treasures bond.
Uh so those are uh worked out every year and need to be signed. Um so he's working on that. Uh we were had a presentation about um ex- students being put in the accelerated program. There's a slight change about those that are put in there automatically as opposed to those that are automatically invited to join, if I said that right, Dr. Kincaid. Um so we'll be hearing about that and then finally um Mr. Arneson did a save this for last did a presentation on um who and what the parameters are for uh naming certain parts of the school. For example, uh Ken Pickeral Stadium. Um there are certain parameters that we didn't have in place before as to what needs to be what needs to be done before something like that could happen. At the same time, parallel to that, uh if there was a large corporation that wanted to donate a significant amount of money to have part of the school or part of something named, there are procedures for that in place, too.
Um, so we told them we would get that on the agenda. Um, but I just wanted to point that out because it was not there this weekend when you were looking over your materials. >> It looks like it's that final page on the attachment. >> Thank you. >> Like a good reason. All right. >> I move that the board of school trustees approve the executive session minutes on April 13, 2026. Regular session minutes on April 13, 2026. Working session minutes on April 27, 2026. Executive session minutes on April 27, 2026. April 14 to May 11, 2026 claims. April 10, 2026 mini board claims regular payrolls for April 10, 2026 and April 24, 2026. the first quarter financial report, the personnel report, the April transfer memo, the disposal of equipment donation report, overnight field trips, ECA purchases, and ECA account charges as presented. >> Second motion by Mike, seconded by Jennifer.
Why would we not want immediate action if we found a discrepancy or issue for using uh or misusing uh the taxpayers' money? Why would we wait? Mr. Schulz, I see your hand up. I was aligning with your prior point on um separation and clearly stating that PTO funds are not BCSE. Um my focus was on that as everyone sees those as BCSE funds, so we need to be very clear and explicit. Um I do think like we're kind of going down a couple of whole rabbit holes on like the what-ifs, but like I have I feel like the biggest one is honestly just the basic GAAP principles that we've I think Mr. Majors' policy includes, but also just um honestly just more transparency. Like I we've had a couple incidents that we're still months post the way I don't even truly know and I know we're doing audits.
So we're building but it's so you guys understand the different divisions. So there's the overall and then keeps breaking it down. They break it into the sheep and goats is one division, cattle is the other swine and then um reasons is it own a separate one. So you can win awards in each of those for recognition and then overall for overall individual and then overall as a team. So there's just different divisions and obviously we have better days in different divisions throughout. But >> explain what livestock judging is to everybody. >> So we walk up and we get to the contest. There's four classes or not four classes. There's four animals in a class. They're going to be of the same species. So you're going to go look at four heers. You're going to have we have priorities. That's why we practice of same as your sports team, but we practice looking at livestock on the screen and studying different animals.
Yeah. It'll go from the ceiling down to the floor pretty well and underneath the floor in some cases in this building. So, um and the other nice thing I think that I liked about PSG is is that they said, you know, uh for example, furniture. Don't go through us for furniture cuz we're going to do the markup. They said, you know, if you've got a furniture company you work with, you call them, you set that up, you you know, you save that money. So, they they definitely look for ways to try to save money for you. You know, we can pick our own architect. We can do that stuff in-house, but if there's specific companies that we want to have bids, then we can go ask those companies to bid and and let them do it. So, and and as we go through this process when we actually start doing the construction, then we open bids um and they'll you know, we'll see what we get.
I think we have landed um as we're thinking big picture primarily on the we should allow our students to have them because of the number of afterchool commitments, extracurricular activities, not to mention a countywide school district with a lot of transportation challenges for parents picking up their children after school in a K12 environment. It's also important to note that this is not just cell phones. Our mind initially drifts to that and I think that's our biggest challenge. But the legislation actually outlines that in addition to student cell phones, the law specifically names non-schoolissued tablets, non-schoolissued laptops, gaming devices, and smartwatches. anything that essentially can pair with or provide a technological distraction to students are now restricted from that bell-to-bell scenario. And so that includes lunches, passing periods, and instructional time. The legislation did grant some exceptions. This is something that our district will need to uh wrestle with.
Uh completing tutorials and instructional materials with reasonable time on task and get that through that spreadsheet I mentioned and then participating authentically in written responses or assessments. One thing they're going to know is that quote down at the bottom is that they may be required to demonstrate masterly, verbally, or through proctored reassessment when coursework patterns indicate insufficient authentic engagement, which means if you cheated your way through it. Um, because they're going to fold immediately when I'm proctoring a test in person if they haven't done it. So, that's that's something we haven't had before. So, a whole lot more scrutiny, a whole lot more um academic integrity and well, I guess I talked about the spreadsheet, but we do have digital activity records, timestamps, pacing reports, etc. that I'll use to do that. If they do start to fail, we're going to have support for them.
Again, democracy dies in the dark. Uh so the budget by the time you get to town meeting it's too late. I can get up and say what does this mean or I don't like that or whatever. But is there even a mechanism to change the budget? >> No. I think we'd have to just vote down typically the whole thing. >> The whole thing it's It it's really a cry and shame that the people who are paying for it and the people who are supposedly at the top of this structure again once again are sitting there powerless because of the way this thing is designed. And again, people have great ideas. And I'm actually going to segue into that uh before I forget. Um because we call this the information parlor because the people citizens have a right to share information. It's again I think it's your civic duty to spend some time finding information whether it's a town meeting or a select board meeting or a ZBA meeting or the town meeting and I write the selectman when I think there's something that needs to be said and one thing I noticed again it I believe it was in this whining paper my mother gave it to me um we had one one Ashland municipal aggregation rate and it got so high that it was actually higher than ever and so I wrote them and I gave them the link.
If you made a point that I agree or don't, it's okay. I do think some of those um I I feel like the time limit has helped some people feel like it goes better whether it does or not and I I applaud again you up the time limit. That seemed something people can live with, right? >> a citizen's petition. >> Yes. So I I'm I read some other towns are looking in and doing those things. So that as a limit that we agree on seems to be okay, but but to say you can only speak once who who said who said that? >> That that was not the citizen's petition at all. Um and my my other comment too and I know it happened before. You had some maybe senior citizens who have a little trouble moving. If you're going to end the comments, it shouldn't be who's standing in line.
Um so anyways I again you apparently you looked I looked I didn't see anything. My first thing I do is before I ask for something uh the public records request I look for it and I couldn't find anything. I mean but again I was at a the you didn't attend it was the uh it was a forum about the override and [clears throat] a a resident got up and said that they couldn't find anything on the website >> which is I think pretty accurate. I mean, I actually can't I can't I can't even find the public [laughter] record, WHICH IS KIND OF FUNNY. >> I wish that was more prominent. I think it used to be and now you have to go to like two pages or all the way down and you have to kind of know it's there. Agreed. It's not >> Yeah.
It feels like I I'm not sure why we get partial and I I think it's probably just a blind spot of people again doing their best to say I need more money, >> but it isn't your best when you have partial information and I don't think it's your best when you're actually adding positions, but >> not really many many ways I think could be if you talk to the community belt tightening. Yeah, I I think you've really hit on something that's important. As far as I'm concerned, all I've been given is a plate of abstractions. I don't know what's on this plate. I don't know what I'm supposed to be eating. Is it meat? Is it vegetables? Is it is it lettuce? I mean, I don't know because everything's an abstraction. And I want to talk about Keefe because we've been told there was a graph with four little thingies on it, little uh graphics on the graphic.
She's hitting up over 600 for the season hoping that we can get one of her classic line drives here into the outfield. >> [crying] >> And Eustace another another lazy one to shortstop, but she beats it out. She is safe. I told you, George, no ball is safe in the ground. Yeah, you told me she was fast, but I saw that play develop and I thought oh, that's too bad she's out cuz the ball was hit sharply to shortstop. Shortstop grabbed it, rifled it to first, and amazingly I look up and she's by first base. Nico is far and away the fastest kid on this team, probably one of the [screaming] fastest in the state as Domestico shows bunt and they're not even going to attempt. That's going to be a catcher's interference as Eustace takes second base on >> [screaming] >> Randall's first pitch to Domestico.
It involved us hosting an applied Kansas application event, a FAFSA completion event, and a college signing Senior signing day event. Is that coming up? >> Senior. Yes, that is on the senior day is on Thursday. >> On Thursday. That is correct. So anyway, uh a terrific award for the high school and again focusing on that postsecary piece. Um you'll see a special thank you from Stacy Augustine at Coffee Health Systems uh to the middle school uh and the civics class taught by Jenny Anderson. Very nice positive example. This is just one of many many positive examples that go on daily in our in our district uh for different uh entities in our community. You know, Mr. Baldwin mentioned uh the community service event with uh Wolf Creek and and there are just so many others that go on. Uh so again, great to have great school community connection and relationship.
>> Five. Five. >> We're trying to do five. Yep. >> Mainly because new teachers, >> well, just we're trying to get to where they all have access to to that technology in their classroom. Now, we have some teachers that still have the projectors and the pull down screens. Um, which is working for them at this time. They just don't have the same technology capabilities in their classroom that the other teachers have. So, >> how many total do we need to So, everybody does have one. >> We need to be at that nine mark. >> That's how many more we need. Yeah, but again, if we're doubling, you know, that's a little less than doubling it. But if we're doubling that, it just sends that number. Any other questions? I would entertain a motion to approve the technology rotation as presented. >> Motion by Allison. >> Second.
It's it's fantastic. It's literally the only thing we do in the district where we celebrate tech through the high school all in the same room for the same concept. We had two second grade students this year who each read more than two million words. >> Wow. >> Second graders. That was awesome. >> Second graders. Yeah. They like had to stand on the chair so we could see them >> in a crowded room. Um we've wrapped up state testing which is good. Our e results are already in. You heard that. and the reclassification rates. Um, we usually our state test results roll in sometime in June. Rosa Maria made a great point. Every time the state changes vendors, the test scores go all over the place because you're not comparing the same thing anymore. >> How do they do that? >> I um competitive bidding. And then, as you're aware, um, Chun Valley Education Foundation received a grant to support our non-English speaking parents in acquiring English skills.
And then again, always fact-check and make sure that what is coming out of that AI generative tool you're using is accurate, so always review. And the last piece is making sure we continue to collaborate with with others. So, we don't want to make have this tool just working in isolation. We want to make sure we're still meeting and working in the same capacity that we do. Obviously, more minds are better than one. Um the last piece you'll see on these documents at the bottom of each of these pages for staff, students, and the staff in the different two student ones is just some options and some ways of appropriate use and some ways that are prohibited. Again, stress that we're only using licensed AI tools. One of the other things that is prohibited is we're not using any names, IDs, photos, birth dates of any individuals, specifically students, obviously.
Any questions? Can I please have a motion to approve the school treasurer? >> Dot. >> Doug and Vivian. >> Yes. >> Uh, anybody have any questions on the board policy update on first readings? >> No. >> Can I please have a motion to approve the board policy update on first reading? Second >> Vivian and Ash. >> All in favor? >> I. >> Any oppose? >> Eyes have it. Annual certified certification of hazardous bus conditions.
