Uh so that's 178 basically split across the two lines. this um these next three items are part of the $195,000 and cuts that we uh factored into our budget uh back in January but didn't identify. So, one of them is a secretarial position that was at Darcy that we're not um you know filling. Another one was a transportation uh coordinator at um you know at our transportation um center. And then another one was uh a reduction in secretarial um support time at the high school um going from a 12 month to a 10-month position. So these are some of the reduction these are the reductions in our our budget process. And here are the areas where we had to increase cost. So if you look at this from the left, the current year in in the 56 budget year, um we budgeted $10,000 for cleaning at the bus depot.
John Cubic talked about struggling in golf, but learning to reset and keep going. When things get hard, and they will, don't quit. Confidence comes from knowing I can handle this. Lesson six, people matter. Cassidy Stewart shared when things were tough, a teacher stepped in and make sure she wasn't alone. Luke Chung shared that when impacted him more than hundreds of speech and debates trophies were the relationships he made. With friends like Ben and Adam who always showed up to support him and teachers who poured into him, he says that is true greatness. Cadia Alagal shared that she built her confidence and found her voice in part because of Dr. Ponous. Those moments stick. After you leave the creek, carry this forward. Be the person who shows up. Check in, reach out, pay attention, and remember people remember how you made them feel. Lesson seven, you are bigger than one moment.
All other expenditures remain within approved budget limits and the organization's overall financial position remains strong. Are there any questions? >> Questions from the board? >> Thank you so much, Miss Carlo. >> Thank you. >> Appreciate it. >> Moving on with the agenda this evening, uh, our barbecue unified school district principal reports. Mr. Yes, >> President Media, members of the board, members of the community. Um, again, we thank you for being here and and joining us uh in in person or virtually. Um, every month once again, our principles are highlighting how we're meeting our five goals. So, at this point, let's give it up for Miss Enriquez Benson one more time to share the highlights for this month. Go ahead, Miss Enriquez. >> Right. Good evening, President Wendia, governing board members, Superintendent Diaz. I have submitted my principal's report. I hope you've had the opportunity to read it.
>> I have a couple questions. Um where do the sprinkler systems what does that fall under? What category will that come from? >> Um well that would be that would be with all of it. That would be both with the renovations between the safety and the security and the renovations. Um it would fit under both of those. And on the tour that was another thing that noticed and I'll just I'm sorry to go over this again but the narrative a lot of the places where the ceilings have been built in they're actually above where they cut out a hole in the ceiling tile but the sprinkler sits up above. And uh Taber is who's works with our local Timber Mesa, he was along with on the tour and he said those sprinklers are not effective. They're they're not going to be effective because they're up above the ceiling tile with a hole where the water could just come out that one spot.
So, that's saving us, you know, additional $75,000 is our budget. Um but I give you this tonight so that you can approve it. I move to approve the district financial report as of May 2026. >> Second, >> Mrs. Lewis. >> Yes. >> M Miss Peters. >> Yes. >> Mrs. Yes. Mr. McGib. >> Yes. >> Mr. Rosley. >> Yes. >> And a month or so ago, we went through the auditor general's um audit >> report, I guess, would be a better word. Yes. Um and we kind of got together and uh Greg um came up with a really nice uh plan of action that he's going to review with us. So this this plan of action is a living working document. So nothing in this is set in stone. It's not the be all end all. If we do come up with some a better way of resolving one of these issues and we can update this report at that time.
You're exactly right. Uh these are our early warning systems, and if our first grade students aren't meeting these early reading targets, we are going to have a gap in proficiency. So, we have to work really hard at those foundational literacy skills. And to do so, that is our commitment with our professional development, our efforts aligned with the state's initiative for literacy endorsements. So, specifically here as you can see here, the crux of move on when reading is exactly that. And so, we need to make sure that we are utilizing our high-quality instructional materials. We have them. It takes time though, and as Superintendent Man shared, we're changing teacher practices. And so, just yesterday we were on learning walks and we were in a beautiful classroom. It kind of parallels a question that was asked about learning walks, but the teacher was pulling back and doing some progress monitoring with students, but then she also had students on their iPads, but they were using Amira and she is an AI reading coach.
>> [laughter] >> For '27, we'll do that. >> I don't know. >> Play something. >> So, today's report will include updates on student counts in ADM, the revised number three M&O budget unrestricted capital, and remember just a reminder that signatures are required, so and So student count comparison, we are comparing um the 26 adopted to this revision here, and you can see that the ADM we initially projected a 1300 student loss. We really only lost 768 students, so we've gained 532 from the adopted numbers, which is a huge celebration for us. We're really happy to report that. The weighted student count um also increased by 1033 weighted students, um which also impacted our revenue control limit. So here is our M&O budget capacity. You can see that we have a $4.97 million difference from adopted to revised number three. Part of the $3 million was because we removed the transfer from um capital to M&O, and the 1.97 remaining is from the weighted student count.
It's a I personally think it's a terrible idea and it's going to make your life so much more difficult getting a budget approved next year. That's [clears throat] what I personally think. And we're also still trying to recover our reputation as a district. >> Yeah, it didn't go so well Monday night in Berlin. So I don't think >> Lots of lots of inaccurate statements made, but there were still angry statements. Yeah. Yeah. How we talk to other people does matter and how they react to us. Yeah. As much as I know. Terrible. I think it's a terrible idea, but if you want to do it, go for it. Well, Boylston it went great. We had some parents show up, but the budget passed unanimously in Boylston. No issues. So without discussion. So I I would respectfully for the next meeting, I would actually recommend that we do a full meeting June 1st jointly with them because we we've watched the MASC video on overrides and they did say to start very early.
One of the the most memorable events that I had to attend and really love to attend this year was the 2025 Canton High School Wall of Fame induction ceremony. And I see a community member that just walked in and his daughter actually played a role in this. This event was attended by a hundred guests and served as a wonderful opportunity for our alumni to come back. This was an event and I said it that night that I I must be getting pretty old because it's an event that I started over 20 some odd years ago and just to bring it back after a five-year hiatus is exciting and we're already receiving applications for honoring our um guests, our alumni in the following selected a date. So that that's exciting work. The district has made a significant pro progress in uh a communications plan and you know Kira is with us on every single board meeting but sometimes you may not realize what she may be doing on the outside and uh this communications team with Kira, Mr.
Next year we were reducing that to five because we thought we were going to merge our bus depot with DACO. That hasn't that's fallen through. Um, and with the bus or with the um the uh new cleaning contract, we are adding $10,000 to that line for a new total of 15. So, basically what you see here is do a little cleaning contract, Highland, Norton, Dodd, High School in Barnum. Um, and we kind of just took the money, uh, the delta between what we had budgeted for the cleaning contract and the new cost and feathered that across every building. Now, because we're not necessarily build by building for the cleaning contract, but we distributed across each building. Um the cleaning contract was actually higher than that beyond what had budget was budgeted. So we negotiated with them to bring down the cost and we you know took some items out of the cleaning contract generally not fully out but reduced the scope.
Will Roth didn't make the baseball team his freshman year, and then he got hurt. He went all out with screaming eagles and helped shaped the Pine Creek culture. He learned that one moment doesn't define you. Aiden Williams struggled as a freshman, but turned things around academically and finished strong. Dorothy Naggie moved here during the pandemic and was content reading in the library. But when we switched to all school lunch, she made new connections and bloomed. As you embark on your next journey, next journey, remember this. You will fail at something. Learn from it, grow from it, move forward. And remember, you are so much more than one challenging moment. And lastly, lesson eight, be kind. Taylor Ritch said it simply, be kind. You never know what someone else is going through. Isaac Harris said there's always bor more beneath the surface. Brooke Gistler learned that once you get p fast past first impressions, you find real friendship.
Um, we did maintain our April attendance at 90%. Thank you. Um, and then another highlight we had, um, thank you to Hedman and his staff. They did a barbecue lunch, um, in celebration of month of the young child. We had over We had about a hundred parents that RSVPd. I feel like more showed up than that. Um, but they all enjoyed it. They got to sit and have lunch with their kids. So, it was a really nice event. >> Did I miss anything? Reuben >> video. I've been walking around waiting for Thank you. I've been walking around waiting for you to shine. My love keep on passing me by. Doesn't feel like I belong. I'm trying to keep it alive on this side for a better confirmation. Yeah, I'm heading for the station. I can see now you try. If you will, just come along with me.
And so that would be part of the whole renovation that includes safety security on the ceiling tiles. It would be redone to make sure that we're up to code on that. >> And just a nosy question, Bosley, do we have a water treatment? Do we have a mini water treatment that treats the water before it runs through everything to help with all that corrosion on all your stuff and stuff >> as in for potable water or as in the HVAC system? It in which way are you asking? >> I'm talking about your HVAC system. Do we have >> There is some filters that yes are in line and yes, we pull them once a month. Uh, but the corrosion is always there. It It's just always degrading. But yes, ma'am, we do have filters that we use to try and filter out particulates throughout that HVAC loop.
Also, with this being a living breathing document, when we have our administrative retreat in July, um we'll go over it again with the administrative team before presenting it back to the board at the board retreat. So, this is a working document. Um so, the first risk area that the auditor general had was our budget li budget limit reserve within our capital budget. Um, we should be able to get this one off the list within the next couple of years. Um, there's a couple things and I'll touch on this one a little bit later as well, but we will when we do this upcoming year's budget, we won't be transferring funds back and forth between capital and M because, you know, we got our hands smacked for doing it, which is something we're we're allowed to do, but the auditor general doesn't like it. um our buzz leases July 1st will be our final payment.
And watching what the students were doing with Amira when the teacher is busy because she's giving specific attention to a child. The kids who are reading with Amira, she listens to them and she gives them immediate feedback. So, one student was mispronouncing the word peered. So, after she finished her sentence, Amira stopped her and said, "Say this word, peered." And it showed like a little monkey like peering around a tree. And then, based on the science of reading, it had a human face modeling how to pronounce the word peered. So, the little girl in her microphone said, "Peered." And then they were able to move on to a new sentence. She made another mistake on the word stared. It stopped her. If she wasn't using Amira, she would have been reading on her own not having any idea that she was mispronouncing those words. So, when we think about oral reading fluency like we just talked about with our assessments, the tools, even though they might not be directly with their teacher, they can be getting that immediate feedback.
There was a slight adjustment to the override. The budget balance carry forward we have adjusted now based on what we believe will be final spend. Tuition in with a slight adjustment based on current revenue that we've received. And then prop 123 and the free and reduced price lunch add-on, uh we did we didn't know at the time when we adopted um what it was going to be, so we were conservative and um adopted zero. So we can see that we added another 2.9 million there, resulting in a $7.6 million increase from adopted to this budget.
Um Tracy also said that she was willing to come out and do a presentation to us. >> to start without Brent though? He He made it clear today he'd like to wait until September. This is with our new superintendent. >> September's? That's a very long timeline. So >> can still have their meeting and if the school does not want to present, that's understandable, but So here's the thing. What's the school going to present? Cuz you know, these guys are still wrapping up this year. Got to get the financials done, got to get several other things done. Brent's starting July 1st without with some knowledge of what's going on in the district, but not a lot. He doesn't know anybody. He hasn't met anybody. To throw him into that fire. Exactly. So, waiting till September 1st to have you gone, I think July at least you have the historical knowledge that Al has.
Bishop, u Mrs. Jordan and Mrs. solve and have just done a a wonderful job and I look forward to them presenting um either in the fall this communication plan that I've really looked at and if it's exciting one that will really enhance our communication. We really have uh created this theory of trying to be very visible with within the community. We need to continue to grow on that and try to consistently engage families and civic organizations and partner with people. And I I I've been out a lot this year and really trying to talk to as many people as I can and going to events and talking to people and actively staying engaged to build trust within our community. and and every time I go to an event or attend a meeting there, there's always active engagement by our our community. And so I I'm excited about that and some of the digital storytelling that that Kira and her team are doing with our students on the center videos that we're releasing.
So if we were washing the windows every day now we're washing the windows every other day. We're not doing that. Kind of like we don't have 50 kids in a classroom, but it's a an example. So, um that would be an example. These um items here are title title one reallocations um where we took um people that we were paying for with title one money but not all of their salary and covered the rest in the budget as as we should. um Highland secretarial position um uh was a reallocation as well as our birth to three. This is where you see the um oh that's a special uh excuse me that's a title one reallocation as well. So here you see the um teacher leader like we for lack of a better term right now we just called it RAM early childhood. Um and then this is now the AP position.
And Aiden Kloa said it best. Niceness goes a long way. Every day, everywhere. Because it matters more than you think. So when you take a step back and look at it, these aren't just school lessons. They're life lessons. You learned how to show up, work hard, build relationships, take risks, handle failure, be kind, find your passion, and be part of something bigger than yourself. And maybe most importantly, you learned how to find your people. As you leave Pine Creek and step into what's next, remember this. The world does not need you to be perfect. It needs you to be kind. It needs you to be curious. It needs you to be brave enough to try, strong enough to keep going, and humble enough to keep learning. And the best part, you already know how to do all of these things because everything you really need to know in life, you learned right here at Pine Creek.
